The new 12 inch single from London based duo GREATER THAN ONE is "Now Is The Time", a heavy handed, rhythmically tough track which has Martin Luther King's most famous speech running throughout. It's release is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the assassination of the human rights leader on April 4th.
"We've utilised speeches before," explains Lee. "Such as one by Haile Selasse which was also used by Bob Marley, but King's 'Now Is The Time' speech is so moving and important that we felt it essential not only to feature it, but release it on vinyl."
The band, Lee and Michael, incorporates slides, films, television screens tuned into dead stations and garish costumes -- a two and three dimensional montage of movement and imagery. They recently returned from a series of dates in Europe, including the fifth annual DMA 2 festival in Bordeaux, where they played alongside Laibach and In The Nursery. The have a far greater public profile on the far side of the Channel.
"The UK seems to be 10 to 15 years behind Europe in their appreciation of acts who use performance art to complement their music. What we do is often too heavy for people over here. They can't understand it, some simply sneer at it it."
Having previously released a number of cassette packages -- their 1985 debut came complete with a box full of wax sculptures -- and an LP on Side Effects, a new album, with music ranging from punchy dance mixes like "Now Is The Time" to more experimental material, including some recording made on the street, is due for release in a few weeks. Entitled "Dance Of The Cowards", like the 12 inch, it will be available on their own Kunst = Kapital label. --P - Melody Maker
THE DANCE vibration continues to hit the charts, with the Cartel and Pinnacle gaining chart action in both hip-hop, house and now acid house quarters. It seems that everyone and his backing track are intent on getting down and the most unlikely of candidates for toetapping quotas are creeping from under the floorboards. Enter _Greater Than One_ who formerly turned up on SPK's Side Effects label, they now have their own label K+K (stands for Kunst Equals Kapital) and have a 12 inch, Now Is The Time, through Red Rhino and the Cartel. It features the words of Martin Luther King and will be followed by a CD and LP. - Music Week
Orthodox Serbian singing, a fifteenth-century chamber choir (well not really but you know what I mean), some other sampled bits and pieces and the most famous bits of Martin Luther King's most famous speech cut into a stealthy pulsebeat. A serious and unsettling dubwise sound. Bloody good. - Time Out
Reconstructed avant-gardists explore the bush of ghosts, with snatches of grand opera, Mission Impossible tribal chanting, jolly Swiss milkmaids and the stentorian tones of Martin Luther King. Pretty wild. The B-side is terrifying, the sort of thinq Genesis P. Orridge might play in his lift. - NME
The great post-Foetus dance rush continues. Influenced by Jim Thirwell's 'Filth' and Nail' LPs along With this gorily satanic _Omen_ trilogy, Greater Than One mix violins (sampled naturally) with histrionic quasireligious chanting to create an almost baroque, monastic feeling. A brief pause of near metronomic silence follows before once more the screaming mullahs start their prayer meeting. The B-side, a nodding song, is far more pleasant, featuring a deluge of screaming, female chanting and Martin Luther King. - Sounds
