A discography of releases from Coil and related projects, including remix/
production work, collaborations, and appearances by Coil members on other
artist's releases.

                          COIL: A BRIEF HISTORY

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coil was formed in early 1983 by JOHN BALANCE (aka Geff Rushton, Jhon
Balance), at the time a member of Psychic TV. Initially, Coil co-existed
with another project called Zos Kia, with the core members of both bands
being Balance, his fellow PTV member JOHN GOSLING (aka Joan d'Arc) and MIN.
This line-up played several live performances as Coil and/or Zos Kia
throughout 1983, often aided by PETER "SLEAZY" CHRISTOPHERSON (ex-Throbbing
Gristle, and also a member of PTV).

Soon after the appearance of Coil/Zos Kia and Psychic TV at the infamous
Berlin Atonal Festival on October 3rd, 1983, Balance and Christopherson left
Psychic TV and Zos Kia, becoming the core of Coil and continuing with the
name until today.

Other members of Coil, both past and present, include:

STEPHEN THROWER: a member circa 1986 to 1991. Previous to this, he was a
member of the band Possession, who released at least one album - THE THIN,
WHITE ARMS, OBTUSELY ANGLED AT THE ELBOW, METHODICALLY DIPPING AND EMERGING
(1984, A-Mission Records, UK) - and appeared on several compilations. He has
also contributed to recordings by Skullflower, specifically on their 1990
remix album RUINS (Shock, UK). Since leaving Coil, he has worked with the
groups Identical and Put Put.

OTTO AVERY: listed as a member on GOLD IS THE METAL and LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN,
although according to Sleazy, he didn't actually contribute musically but was
simply a young guy who looked good in their publicity shots. Sleazy also
commented that the name has been used by John Balance on occassion.

DANNY HYDE: producer and regular fixture on later Coil releases.

DREW McDOWALL: has worked with Coil regularly for the past several years, and
became an official member of the band in 1995.

BILL BREEZE: an electric viola player and latest addition to the Coil
line-up, he joined in early 1997.

Coil have also featured many guest artists, such as Rose McDowall, Marc
Almond, Gavin Friday, Clint Ruin (Foetus), and Annie Anxiety.

In 1994, Coil started releasing material under other names. Names used so
far, and intended to be used in the future, include: The Eskaton, ELpH, Black
Light District, Time Machines, Wormsine, Rosa Mundi, Trial By Music, 2012,
and Lifestyle. Those names, when used, are noted in the title section of the
listings.

An "x" next to a line of release information indicates that it is, to the
best my knowledge, out of print. (Note that it doesn't necessarily mean that
the release is totally unavailable, just that it is no longer being
produced.)

[RC:number] is the value of the release in British pounds according to the
Record Collector 1997/98 Value Guide.

        Notes:
The first five tracks ("Sicktone" to "Truth") form Side 1 of the

The remainder of the tracks form Side 2, which is credited to
"Coil/Zos Kia", and were recorded in 1982/83.

"Rape" is the same as "Violation" from the cassette release.

HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS
      x EP 1984 L.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords LAY 5 BE

How to Destroy Angels / Absolute Elsewhere

        Notes:
This release is subtitled "ritual music for the accumulation of male
        sexual energy".

"How To Destroy Angels" was originally intended to be the b-side to
the track "Silence & Secrecy" on a clear vinyl 12" released by
Temple Records. This release was aborted, presumably due to Balance
and Sleazy's departure from Psychic TV who ran the Temple label.

The b-side, "Absolute Elsewhere", is intended to be non-playable,
        and according to Coil:
        - first pressing had unplayable noise-filled grooves
        - second pressing had playable multi-layered music
        - third pressing had a smooth, grooveless surface as originally
          intended.

However, there's also evidence of two other versions existing:
        - playable b-side with a constant tone for around 15 minutes.
        - playable b-side with a series of "test tones" in unconnected
          locked grooves

A pink vinyl edition exists, although it's unclear how many copies of
this edition were pressed. This may be a bootleg.

First pressing included an A3 black & white poster.

This track also appears on the UNNATURAL HISTORY anthology in mono
form, and the HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS (REMIXES AND RE-RECORDINGS) CD.

        Vinyl etching:
Side A - SHUT UP! IT'S GOOD FOR YOU!

        The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party

        Notes:
Single-sided flexidisk that was planned to be included with an issue
of Free Magazine, but was never released. This track appears on the
        SCATOLOGY album.

The Spoiler / Clap / Solar Lodge / The Sewage Worker's Birthday
Party / Godhead = Deathead / Cathedral in Flames

        Notes:
First UK vinyl pressing has a sleeve with a colour postcard (2
different designs) pasted over a Black Sun design on the cover.

An interview in 1984 refers to this release as an upcoming LP
        entitled POISONS.

Ubu Noir / Panic / At the Heart of it All / Tenderness of Wolves /
The Spoiler (unreleased alternative version) / Clap / Restless Day /
        Aqua Regis / Solar Lodge / The S.W.B.P. / Godhead = Deathead /
Cathedral in Flames / Tainted Love

        Notes:
The track listing above is the actual playing order of the CD; the
tracks "Restless Day" and "Aqua Regis" are listed in the wrong order
        on the cover.

"The S.W.B.P." is the same as "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party"
        from the LP release.

Initial pressings of the CD had black lettering and graphics on a
white background. This was switched to white-on-black on later
        pressings.

      x CD5" 1994 Wax Trax! Records/TVT Records TVT 7013 US

Panic / Aqua Regis / Tainted Love

        Notes:
First UK pressing is on red vinyl in a textured sleeve, limited to
500 copies [RC:18]. All subsequent pressings are on black vinyl
[RC:12]. Some (or perhaps all?) copies of the Wax Trax! edition
also came in a textured sleeve.

"Panic" is different from the version on SCATOLOGY. This version
also appears on the UNNATURAL HISTORY III anthology release.
"Aqua Regis" and "Tainted Love" also appear on the CD release of
        SCATOLOGY.

The CD editions have "Aqua Regis" misspelt "Aqua Regos" on the CD
        itself.

HORSE ROTORVATOR

      x LP 1986 Boudisques Records 08-023848-20 NL
      x LP 1986 Relativity Records 88561-8139-1 US

The Anal Staircase / Slur / Babylero / Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)
/ Herald / Penetralia / Circles of Mania / Blood From the Air / Who
By Fire / The Golden Section / The First Five Minutes After Death

        Notes:
First pressing of UK LP is on clear vinyl, limited to 1000 copies,
and comes with A5 card insert and stickers.
First pressing of Dutch LP is on blue vinyl, limited to 500 copies.
First pressing of US LP is on gold vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

"The First Five Minutes After Death" is titled "The First Five
Minutes A.D." on the label of the LP editions. Also, the tracks
"Blood From The Air" and "Who By Fire" are listed in the wrong
order on the US LP release (and possibly others?).

        Vinyl etching:
Side A - WE ALL GET THE GODS WE DESERVE
Side B - CHANTS DE MORT

The Anal Staircase / Silk / Babylero / Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)
/ Acapulco March / Penetralia / Ravenous / Circles of Mania / Blood
From the Air / Who By Fire / The Golden Section / The First Five
Minutes After Death / The Anal Staircase (Dionysian remix)

        Notes:
The tracks "Ravenous" and "The Anal Staircase (Dionysian remix)"
appear on the cassette but are not listed on the cover.

"Silk" is the same as "Slur" and "Acapulco March" is the same as
"Herald" from the LP/CD editions. These were likely working titles
for the tracks as they also appear under these names on vinyl test
pressing and pre-release promo cassette editions.

Red Slur / ...Of Free Enterprise / Aqua Regalia / Metal in the Head
/ Either His or Yours / Chickenskin / Soundtrap / The First Five
        Minutes After Violent Death

        Notes:
From the liner notes: "This release is not the follow-up to HORSE
ROTORVATOR... but a completely seperate package - a stopgap and a
breathing space - the space between two twins. Presented here are
thoroughbreds that escaped the Horse Rotorvator - discarded shards,
distortions, disappointments, scrambled and disassembled stages.
Remnants of what once was. This record is a chance for us to
release some otherwise placeless pieces of music."

The first LP release took 4 different forms:
        (1) A deluxe box set with free 7" single THE WHEEL (listed below), a
poster, booklet and more, limited to 55 copies [RC:250]. Maarten
Schermer describes it: "The deluxe box set is more a sort of large
binded hardcover that opens as a book. It's covered with black
linen with the 8 pointed star in gold print. Inside it are the LP
(with handfinished cover) and all the artwork, incl. several
prints, a large foldout poster, poems, and more." It also includes
            a certificate signed by Coil.
        (2) A limited vinyl edition, some copies including THE WHEEL 7".
One source says this edition was limited to 900 copies, some on
red vinyl and some on clear. A second source states that it was
limited to 650 copies, 150 on red vinyl [RC:40] and 500 clear
            [RC:25].
        (3) Another limited edition (possibly a test pressing) on red vinyl,
including THE WHEEL 7", in an unfinished sleeve, limited to 25
            copies [RC:150].
        (4) Regular release on black vinyl.

The second LP release has slightly different packaging and includes
        the KEELHAULER 7" [RC:18].

        Notes:
This limited edition release was initially only available with some
copies of GOLD IS THE METAL LP.

In 1996, a few remaining copies were found by John and Sleazy who
made them available via the Internet. Each copy came with a special
handmade sleeve that reads: "This so-called special edition of Coil's
Keelhauler single is one of 23 copies found at the back of a wardrobe
and offered for sale via rec.music.industrial at the outrageous price
of $20." (This message is meant to poke fun at the fact that several
r.m.i subscribers commented that they felt the price was too high,
triggering a heated debate regarding the ethics of limited edition
releases.) The other side of the sleeve features John & Sleazy's
photos, signatures and fingerprints (probably another poke at the
supposed "criminal nature" of the release). Each copy also included
        several stickers as inserts.

Analgesic / Road Surface / Accident Insurance

        Notes:
The first 3 tracks are taken from Coil's soundtrack to the Clive
Barker film "Hellraiser" which was rejected by the film studio.
These tracks also appear on the HELLRAISER THEMES CD and UNNATURAL
HISTORY II anthology CD along with other tracks from the same
        sessions.

The remainder of the tracks (which constitute side B of the release)
are a selection of short peices that were commissioned for use as
music for advertisements on British television. They also appear on
the anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY III under the group title of
        "Music For Commercials".

Initial 10" pressing on black vinyl [RC:7] - limited, but quantity
        unknown.
        Second 10" pressing on coloured vinyl - 500 clear, 500 pink [RC:10].

WRONG EYE/SCOPE
      x 7" 1990 Shock Records SX002 UK

        Wrong Eye / Scope

        Notes:
Limited edition of 2300 copies, broken down as follows:
        - 26 copies in a white sleeve, lettered (A to Z) and signed by Coil
and cover artist Savage Pencil [RC:25]
        - 974 copies in white sleeve, numbered [RC:12]
        - 1000 copies in yellow sleeve [RC:10]
        - 300 copies in green sleeve, some including a gold sticker with a
          black "demonic emblem" [RC:15]

"Wrong Eye" is described by Coil as being a "rough sketch" of the
track "Windowpane" (from LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN). Coil has also
stated that speculation about "Scope" being an early version of
"Her Friends The Wolves" (from STOLEN AND COTAMINATED SONGS) is
false, and that the track was actually a "studio jam" fueled by
        "experimenting with MDMA".

Both tracks appear on THE PORTABLE ALTAMONT compilation CD and the
anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY III along with "Meaning What
Exactly?", another track recorded around the same time.

UNNATURAL HISTORY (COMPILATION TRACKS COMPILED)

/ His Body was a Playground For the Nazi Elite / Homage to Sewage /
Here to Here (Double Headed Secret) / S is for Sleep / Dream
        Photography / Comfortable / Never / Penetralia II / Sicktone / How
        to Destroy Angels

        Notes:
As the subtitle of this release suggests, this is a collection of
tracks that appeared on various compilations and limited edition
        releases between 1983 and 1990.

The track "How To Destroy Angels" appears here in a mono version.

It's also worth mentioning that early pressings of this release are
succeptable to the "disc rot" problem that has been striking many
discs pressed by PDO in the early '90's. This problem is first
evidenced by the label side of the disc turning colour to a gold or
bronze, followed by a static-like deterioration of the sound on the
disc starting from the last track and moving backwards.

HELLRAISER THEMES

Hellraiser / The Hellbound Heart / Box Theme / No New World / Attack
of the Sennapods / Main Title

        Notes:
All tracks taken from Coil's soundtrack to the Clive Barker film
"Hellraiser" which was rejected by the film studio.

The first pressing of the CD had black lettering on a blue
background, while the next few pressings had black lettering on a
silver background. After switching to a different manufacturer, the
colours changed again to silver-grey lettering on a white background.

This release has been deleted, but these tracks appear on the
anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY II along with three other tracks
        recorded during the same sessions.

        the Wolves / Dark Nova

        Notes:
This release is to LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN as GOLD IN THE METAL is to
HORSE ROTORVATOR - a collection of outtakes, oddities, etc.

Limited edition of 2000 copies [RC:20].

Mail order copies included a skull/Coil sticker and no song titles.
All other copies have a sticker on the back listing the titles and
other release information. Many of the song titles were incorrect,
however, as they were taken from an advance rough cassette and used
by World Serpent. The titles were corrected for the re-release
        edition.

This release is also succeptable to the "disc rot" problem mentioned
in the notes for UNNATURAL HISTORY.

The unreleased LP edition was planned to be limited to 1000 copies.

There was a bootleg edition of this release which can only be spotted
by checking the inner ring of the CD - the official release reads
        "LOCICD4 10204341 01 &" and "MADE IN THE U.K. BY PDO".

This second, unlimited edition was released because of the bootleg
edition mentioned above. The cover is different and several song
titles were corrected, but it's otherwise identical to the original

[new album - title t.b.a.]
        CD 1998? nothing/Interscope/Universal ??? US/CA

        Notes:
Recording and mixing of this album was completed in the autumn of
1996 at Trent Reznor's studio in New Orleans. Release was expected
during the Spring of 1997, but it has been held up for various
reasons and the release date is now expected to be late Spring 1998.

FIRES OF THE MIND is the current working title, with past working
titles including BACKWARDS, INTERNATIONAL DARK SKIES and GOD PLEASE
        FUCK MY MIND FOR GOOD.

A demo tape for this release was submitted in 1994 to Torso Records
(Coil's European label at the time, now bankrupt). It's been
confirmed that versions of several tracks from the demo will appear
on the album, including "Heaven's Blade", "Elves" and "At Your Own
Risk" (originally titled "In My Blood"). Also appearing on the album
will be a track entitled "Backwards" which was recorded in
collaboration with Tim Simenon and which appeared as the credits
theme to the movie Frisk where it was titled "Bee Has The Photos".
As always, these track titles may change by the time of release.

        Notes:
A planned album of remixes of material from the upcoming nothing
album. Coil are currently working out and negotiating with various
remixer friends and aquaintances to be involved in this project.
It's quite possible that INTERNATIONAL DARK SKIES will be used as the
        title for this album.

Conflicting information has been reported for this release:

One source reports the first edition above, noting the release
to being limited to 500 copies, half packaged in a special box, the
other half in a "rancid green" regular cassette box. Power Focus was
a label run by John Balance, and Datenverarbeitung was run by his
        friend Andreas Muller.

The other source reports the other two editions, noting that the
Normal edition came in a box-type package (two pressings, one with a
booklet and one without), and the Front de l'Est issue was simply an
un-labeled C60 tape with a green J-card listing the compilation
        information.

        Horst)

        Notes:
This track was recorded with Boyd Rice during the Sickness of Snakes
session (see NIGHTMARE CULTURE listed in "Collaborations" section
        below).

One source states this release was limited to 300 copies. Another
says it was limited to 1000 - one pressing of 500 black vinyl copies,
and a second pressing of 500 white vinyl - which seems more likely.

This album was later released on CD by Dragnet Records (as part of
a double CD along with the OHRENSCHRAUBEN compilation), but the Coil
track was dropped from this re-release.

        CD 1995 East/West AMCY-861 JP

        Notes:
Includes the tracks "The Downward Spiral (the bottom)", "Eraser
(denial; realization)", "Eraser (polite)", and "Erased, Over, Out"
(last two on North American release only), all credited as being
remixed by "John Balance, Peter Christopherson, and Drew McDowall of
        Coil with Danny Hyde".

It's also been speculated that the track "At The Heart of it All",
which is credited as being created by Aphex Twin, is influenced by
the Coil track of the same name that appears on SCATOLOGY.

Before the release of this disc, there were rumours regarding the
existance of the following NIN remixes by Coil - "Eraser (a version
with worms)", "The Downward Spiral (a gilded sickness)" and "TDS
(fullblown)". It's very likely that these mixes (or elements of
them) are the ones that ended up on this release, albeit with
        different mix names.

        Notes:
Includes the track "Cowboys in Bangkok 1995 (Coil vs. Elph mix)",
which is credited to "Peter Christopherson & Drew McDowall:
technicalities, John Balance: vibrant rays of spiritual psychosis"

This album features various artists remixing tracks from the Chris
& Cosey backcatalogue, with the liner notes having a cocktail party
theme. The notes for this track read: "From 1982's TRANCE, originally
'Cowboys in Cuba' in its virgin state, this Bangkok mix takes the
same fine ingredients and adds 151 proof electronics. Savour the
        deep, long lasting 'mescal' effects".

        Notes:
The track "Kala" has music by Coil with vocals by Lori Carson.

Coil's music was originally given to Laswell for an earlier project
but the deadline was missed, so they used it themselves as the basis
for the "Stoned Circular" tracks on the Black Light District album
A THOUSAND LIGHTS IN A DARKENED ROOM. They later approved it's use
by Laswell on this new project, but were unhappy with it being
released on Sub Rosa due to a previous contract dispute, so they
have made it clear that this is not a true collaboration.

mostly recorded in New York City around the time of the Hallowe'en
1996 Current 93 shows, with additional material (including
Balance's contributions) added later. Release date t.b.a.

Depeche Mode: ???

        Notes:
A Coil remix of a Depeche Mode track "Rush" exists, entitled "Rush
(Black Sun remix)". It was never officially released, but has been
seen on a bootleg or DJ service 12" release. Any leads on this would
be appreciated as Coil doesn't even have a copy of the mix
        themselves.

PART 4: VIDEO & SOUNDTRACK WORK

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

VIDEOS
------

There are at least 5 Coil video clips in existance:

* "The Wheel", available on the video releases SOME BIZARRE SHOW and THE
  SOUNDS OF PROGRESS
* "Tainted Love", available on the video releases GIORNO VIDEO PAK 1
(Giorno Poetry Systems), WAX TRAX! VIDEO COMPILATION 1 (Wax Trax!) and
WAX TRAX! RECORDS: THE FIRST 13 YEARS (A VIDEO RETROSPECTIVE) VOL. 2
  (Wax Trax!/TVT)
* "Windowpane", available on the video release WAX TRAX! RECORDS: THE FIRST
  13 YEARS (A VIDEO RETROSPECTIVE) VOL. 1 (Wax Trax!/TVT)
* "The Snow" (actually an edited version of "Answers Come In Dreams II" from
THE SNOW EP), not commercially available
* "Love's Secret Domain", not commercially available

In a 1991 interview in Alternative Press magazine, Coil spoke of an upcoming
video collection, but it has yet to be released. It's since been rumoured
that Trent Reznor has asked them to compile a collection for release on
nothing.

The SOME BIZARRE SHOW video mentioned above has other Coil involvement
including a short film of David Tibet doing various "bad luck" things
(smashing a mirror, spilling salt, etc.) to a soundtrack of the Coil track
"Clap" (from SCATOLOGY), and footage of Marc Almond reading poetry with
a scantily clad John Balance and John Gosling sitting at this feet.

In addition to video work for Coil, Sleazy has also directed videos for other
bands, including Front 242, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine, and
Van Halen and Silverchair.

SOUNDTRACKS
-----------

Coil was involved in the soundtracks for several Derek Jarman films. Some of
this material has been released (such as THE ANGELIC CONVERSATION), and it's
expected that much of the rest will appear on CD at some point in the future.

Coil also contributed a soundtrack to the video "A Gay Man's Guide to Safer
Sex". At least four tracks on the video are recognizable as Coil:
* a longer mix of "Exploding Frogs" from STOLEN AND CONTAMINATED SONGS
  (without the vocal samples)
* "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party" from SCATOLOGY
* two "light discoish" tracks, one of which was remixed to become the
track "Protection" on the PROTECTION CDEP
A cassette release of this soundtrack was annouced but never released.

In 1993/94, Coil was rumoured to be working on a soundtrack to the comic
book series UNDERGROUND (Dark Horse Comics). However, this project never
took place.

Gregg Araki has used Coil tracks in at least three of his films:
* "The Snow" in THE LIVING END
* "The Hills Are Alive" in THE DOOM GENERATION (although it doesn't appear
  on the soundtrack album)
* "Windowpane", "Who'll Tell", "Exploding Frogs" and "The Last Rites of
  Spring" in TOTALLY FUCKED UP

Music by Coil and ELpH appears in the score to the film FRISK (based on
the novel by gay author Dennis Cooper). The film had it's world premiere
screening on June 18th, 1995 as a part of the San Francisco International
Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and has appeared occassionally since in
various film festivals, as well as on video. The credits to the film list
the following tracks, some of which have been remixed or reworked from the
original versions:

Bee Has the Photos (with Tim Simenon) / The Sleeper I / The Sleeper II /
Dismal Orb / Static Electrician / Dark River / Corybantic Ennui / The
Tenderness of Wolves / At the Heart of it All / Nasa Arab / Original
Chaostrophy / The Halliwell Hammers III / Windowpane / As Pure As? /
Driftmix / Answers Come in Dreams I & II / pHILM #1 / Protection

                              PART 5: OTHER STUFF

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coil: MOTOR INDUSTRY
      x 7" 1983 Northampton Wood Hill Records HAV-01 UK

        Motor Industry / Alcoholic Stork

        Notes:
This release is listed in "The International Discography Of The New
Wave" (George & DeFoe, 1982/83), a very complete (albeit error-
ridden) book on punk & early new wave. However, it is not a release
by Balance and Christopherson, and is another band entirely.

Phallus Dei: PONTIFEX MAXIMUS
CD 1991 Dark Vinyl DV 05 GE

        Notes:
The track "Rule Again" is credited "music by Coil, lyrics by Death In
June". It is actually the Coil track "Here to Here" from the
compilation THE BEAST 666 with the lyrics to Death In June's "Rule
Again" being sung over top. This was supposedly not authorized by
        either Coil or DIJ.

Biofeedback: FREEZE
      x 12" 1992 Sound Mind Productions SM001 UK

        Notes:
Coil is not directly involved in this release, but the track
"Image 73" has been described by a listener as being the album
version of "The Snow" with added beats.

Cosmonauts Hail Satan: HELLRAISER
      x 7" 1993 Fourth Dimension Records FDS 33 UK

        Notes:
A UK noise band that states the music on this release was inspired
by both the film & Coil's unused soundtrack.

Delerium: SEMANTIC SPACES
        CD 1994 Nettwerk W2-30092 CA/US

        Notes:
Coil is not directly involved in this release, but the track
"Metamorphosis" samples large portions of "Windowpane (minimal mix)".

The Golden Palominos: PURE
        CD 1994 Restless 72761 US

        Notes:
Coil is not directly involved in this release, but the track "No
Skin" is largely composed of samples from the Coil track "Nasa-Arab".

The Golden Palominos: NO THOUGHT, NO BREATH, NO EYES, NO HEART (PURE REMIXES)
        CDEP 1995 Restless 72790 US

        Notes:
Once again, Coil is not directly involved, but several versions of
"No Skin" appear here, including one (the "Aural Circumcision Mix")
which appears to be composed entirely of samples from "Nasa-Arab".
