King Canute has the reputation of being an arrogant man who had his chair carried to the seaside and ordered the waves of the advancing sea to recede. This is just the opposite of what the story intended to demonstrate. He grew tired of the flattery of his courtiers, who even went so far as to tell him that he could halt the very waves of the sea. He took them down to the waterfront to show them that this was not true, and to show them how foolish they were.
