GAO & SVEN KACIREK, FHUNYUE Hoya LP
The duo met on a rainy day in Tilburg (NL) while working for a dance project -- they came down from very different roads. Gao Fhunyue, a stage director-performer-musician chameleon, works alone or collaborate with Annalena Fröhlich (Robinrobin, Just Another Woman In Space), Thom Luz, Unplush, Peeping Tom, Dorit Chrysler, Ko Murobushi, Damien Jalet, The Scottish Dance Theatre, Bern Ballett, for a most colorful variety of venues in Europe. She is a member of the music association Bongo Joe (Switzerland). Sven Kacirek, an established musician living between Hamburg and Nairobi, who released several records on Honest Jon's and Bureau B and collaborated with several artists like Shabaka Hutchings, Ogoya Nengo, Marc Ribot, John McEntire, Sofia Jernberg, Nils Frahm, Hauschka, F.S. Blumm, and Stefan Schneider. Their encounter quickly revealed that both their musical sensitivity and their instruments (marimbas, drums, percussions, electronics, theremin, Buchla synthesizer, piano) matched stunningly, and that they had to play together. After a short while of rocky life adventures and theater projects in which they collaborated, their off rehearsal sessions would become a lively necessity. The wish to give birth to a project entirely their own, grew so strong that they locked themselves in Sven's studio at Jaffestrasse in Hamburg, and started working on the debut of their duet. They present and share with you their labor of love, in hope that it will be good to your heart. Includes printed inner sleeve and download code.

MAE, JENNY What's Wrong With Me: Singles and Unreleased Tracks 1989-2017 LP
"Jenny Mae made only two full length records, both released just two years apart in the hey-day of '90s indie-rock where small labels rose up like mushrooms in a tropical forest and like so much of the music from that time was easily overlooked and disappeared. Jenny's music found a small, devoted audience and her music was covered not only by many fanzines but also by Rolling Stone, Spin, Interview, even Entertainment Weekly. She played shows and some tours with Guided by Voices, Magnetic Fields, Neko Case, Chris Knox and more but to see her live one never knew what one would see, perhaps on a good night, a deeply moving set sung in her sweet midwestern voice or maybe a woman who could barely stand, her keyboard falling off a bar table she set up on stage as she usually didn't have a keyboard stand. Jenny lived life how an engine swallows gasoline, hot and quickly except her gasoline was alcohol which she used to quiet her undiagnosed schizoaffective disorder and by the early 2000s she went from living in Coral Gables to living on the streets of Columbus, Ohio in a matter of weeks. She remained homeless for nearly three years in Columbus and Miami with various stints in jail or the many hospitals she would visit until her predictable death in 2017, which of course, was in a hospital surrounded by her family and friends. Her music was sweet, catchy and at times bawdy -- some songs as short as Bob Pollard's who championed her and others lush electronic that was closer to My Bloody Valentine or OMD. She was a fan of the Beach Boys and Beatles growing up in rural Ohio and started writing songs in high school. Eventually she started recording on a borrowed Tascam 4-track in the late '80s, songs as innocent as Daniel Johnston's or the Marine Girls. Some of these earliest recordings are gathered here on this compilation that stretches from 1988 through 2016, where her last recording, the devastating 'Not Another Bad Year' was recorded months before her death. It includes many of the songs she made in the years before she died, including the ode to her good friend, Jim Shepard as well as songs she created as she pined for Ohio while going off the rails in Miami. Side two contains some of the singles she recorded for various indie-labels that have not been available since the mid-nineties and several unreleased songs from a never materialized third record. She was a force for everybody who knew her, and she was one who lacked ambition, or maybe the organization to do what folks around her thought was 'normal', she wasn't made for a traditional life." --Bela Koe-Krompecher, 2022

LF58 Live at Brancaleone 3LP
2022 repress. Following the arrival of their debut album Alterazione (AI 019LP, 2020), LF58 (F. Scorcucchi and G. Tillieci) are back on Astral Industries with a special trove of outer-space explorations. Recorded one evening back in April 2019 as a live performance at Rome's Brancaleone, the eponymously titled album offers a sprawling journey across the pan-dimensional ether. Spread across six sides of vinyl, the performance includes fully improvised material as well as choice selections from Simone Giudice, Jonas Kopp, Nuel, Birds of Prey, Rapoon, Steve Roach and Adham Shaikh. There is no doubt that the unique energy and circumstances of the evening contribute to a certain atmosphere present in the music. With seemingly no beginning nor end, the session emerges in suspension; an electric ocean of infinite deepness. Gleaming across the patter of galaxies on a wide black backdrop, its myriad vistas are projected like transitioning scenes of an unending story. The gentle tide brings with it specks of cosmic debris and mysterious signals. Soon, quiet drones are overtaken by ripples of solar flare and percussive clamors. Forms melt like liquid, a ball of amorphous plasma pulsating with ecstatic radiance. Prying open universe within universe, Live at Brancaleone has a vastness that cannot really be contained. 180 gram black vinyl; includes flyer and LF58 sticker.

TINGLEY, MIKE The Abstract Prince LP
2020 reissue. Originally released in 1968. "A great late '60s orchestral baroque pop album with psychedelic sounds all over it." "Guy from Southern California packs up his life and guitar to follow a Swedish exchange student back to her home land in 1967. It doesn't work out. He goes as far as he can with whatever funds he has left, guitar in hand. It's Holland. Having never performed outside his bedroom, he plays coffee shops for tips. Spotted by a member of prominent Dutch band, Blues Dimension who brings his label's A&R guy, he's asked if he wants to record an LP. He records a lush, baroque, orchestral pop sike album. It's released on a Decca in Holland. He appears on national TV and radio, along with supporting on a few tours. With royalties earned on the album he returns to Southern California and heads to Hollywood with the imminent release scheduled on Decca Records in the USA. It doesn't happen. Not the plot of a new movie. This is the abridged story of the lost, barely known treasure that is Mike Tingley, 'The Abstract Prince'."

DAVIDSON, ETHAN DANIEL Stranger LP
"The black, streamlined Commodore Vanderbilt Hudson locomotive emerges from the long tunnel of memory and circles endlessly on the three-rail track of nostalgia. The rails glisten in the rain, the throbbing engine brushes gobbets of water from overhanging branches and hunkers down with a low-pitched whining groan. Sparks sputter from under the wheels in a blue-and-white arc of recall. The long, majestic iron horse rushes down the straightaway against the wall of the house we lived in when we were 10, whistling and chugging bravely. 'I've ridden on a lot of trains,' says Ethan Daniel Davidson, a native Michigander. 'To jump on one, you try to be sure you can see each bolt. Once they all start to blend together, the train is going too fast to jump on. I'm too old to jump on trains now, but I can still write about them.' On Stranger, his most poignant ballad is the quivering, shuddering 'My Train Got Lost'. The title comes from an anthem by a Minnesota troubadour who has written dozens of songs about the coming and going of coachmen, station masters, tramps walking along the rails, conductors, steam whistles, railroad men, railroad gin and railroad tracks. Other tracks of recorded sound on Stranger owe debts to Public Image Ltd. (the post-punk 'Even Bad Seeds'), The Band (the prophetic 'There was a Famine in the House of Bread') and Echo & The Bunnymen (the existential 'My Jail'). Of the folk music staple 'Dink's Song', Davidson says, 'It's pretty self-explanatory: woman deserted by her lover when she needs him the most. She lost her child, so she's going home on the #9 train. At some point we're all going home on the #9.'"

CHALOT, VERONIQUE J'ai Vu Le Loup LP
Reissue, originally released in 1979. "This is an album that takes you on a supernatural journey to the discovery of ancient sounds that move our souls in the deepest of manners." Veronique Chalot was born in Normandy in the north of France, but it was in Paris that she first became interested in traditional French folk music. In 1974 she landed in Rome where she soon earned a small, but dedicated following. In 1979 she recorded her first studio effort, J'ai Vu Le Loup, for the Italian Materiali Sonori label. Over the past 30+ years she has given hundreds of concerts, presenting her repertoire of traditional French/Italian folk songs and building awareness of that fascinating patrimony of antique melodies and dance rhythms. She passed away unfortunately on the 3rd of July 2021. Fully licensed. LP includes inlay card featuring an exclusive essay by Emma Tricca; 180 gram vinyl; edition of 500."First glance into Veronique's voice and you're under a spell she's unaware of casting. Like hearing the magical sound of Ulysses' sirens, you want to throw yourself into the deep blue waters of this record, its saucerful of secrets. Like finding the hidden doors into an ancient world of court jesters, magic flutes, troubadours, and love potions, her delivery, both on the instrument and the singing, is of a beauty impossible to comprehend. Pointless for me to dissect every song or try to draw the history of each and every poem or musical piece. This is an album that takes you on a supernatural journey to the discovery of ancient sounds that move our souls in the deepest of manners. All of this and more was how I felt back in the mid-90s, as a kid, when I first saw Veronique playing in a small club in Rome called Folkstudio. This record captures all the wondrous sensations I had seeing her perform; a life-changing experience. Bon voyage; she'll take you places." --Emma Tricca

BEBEY, FRANCIS African Electronic Music 1975-1982 2LP
2022 repress; Double LP version. Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey is truly one of a kind. He entered the music scene with his African compositions for classical guitar. He gave recitals while pursuing a career in journalism and then as an international civil servant. The same creative impulse also led him to write pop songs, some of which (based on novels he had written) became big hits in Africa and in the French-speaking world. But few people know that in the '70s, Francis Bebey delved into electronic music. The first electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines offered him new possibilities of totally controlling his compositions. He embraced the technique of "sound on sound" recording (recording several tracks, sequentially juxtaposed on the same tape). This new stage in his musical career included the production of several records (Savannah Georgia, New Track, Haiti), rarities both for their creative explorations as well as their manifestations on vinyl. This was a particularly rich period for him, as he tested the limitless possibilities of the medium, and made use of surprising and novel instruments. Incredible sounds -- in the literal sense of the word -- would soon appear on the planet Bebey. Full-color printed innersleeves with notes in English and French.

DILLON 6abotage CD
Dillon's fourth LP, 6abotage, captures today's zeitgeist like few others. A work of sore desperation but also reassuring devotion. Her fourth, and perhaps boldest, album project, 6abotage, marks Dillon's first full-length since 2017's Kind. Described by Dillon herself as "a love letter, a cry for help and a consequence, all in one," 6abotage is the unapologetic manifestation of Dillon's latest artistic excursion with artist and producer Alexis Troy. Together Dillon and Troy have created a lyrically and sonically captivating and genre-bending body of work. The unmistakable soreness of Dillon's voice surrounded by and embedded within Troy's decisive and, at times, almost cinematic production defeats all genre stereotypes. Written, produced, and recorded in complete isolation, 6abotage reflects today's zeitgeist. It is sore and desperate but also reassuring and devoted. 6abotage is a successful protest. A successful protest against stereotypes and preconceptions. A protest against excessive suffering. A protest for selflove. A protest for patience and vulnerability. A protest for forgiveness and growth.

VON SCHLIPPENBACH, ALEXANDER Globe Unity LP
LP version. Reissue, originally released in 1967. In 1966, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach assembled his first large ensemble to play his compositions "Globe Unity" and "Sun." This 14-piece band, which brought together some of the leading figures in European improvised music, would eventually expand -- incorporating not only Europeans but also American and Asian musicians -- and assume its rightful name: Globe Unity Orchestra. In its nascent outing, beautifully recorded at Ariola Studio in Cologne, Schlippenbach's band was already sensational, performing at various festivals and solidifying the reputations of some of its star players. Most notably among these was a 25-year-old saxophonist named Peter Brötzmann, whose whole band -- saxophonist Kris Wanders, drummer Mani Neumeier, and bassist Peter Kowald, the latter of whom would for a period assume nominal leadership of Globe Unity -- was incorporated into the large Schlippenbach group. Globe Unity was Brötzmann's first outing on LP. Kowald's too. And future drum heroes of the krautrock genre, Neumeier (with Guru Guru) and Jaki Liebezeit (with Can) constitute the incredible rhythm section. If you factor in German early-free-music mainstays Gunter Hampel (here on flute and bass clarinet, no vibes), trumpeter Manfred Schoof, bassist Buschi Niebergall, and tenor saxophonist Gerd Dudek, Dutch saxophonist and clarinetist Willem Breuker, French trumpeter Claude Deron, the enormity of the band's potential becomes apparent. Add Schlippenbach himself, an absolute cyclone on the piano as well as prominent tubular bells and gong, and the global scene is set. Schlippenbach's unique position at the time, as one of the foremost players in German free music, but also as a rising young composer who'd studied with Bernd Alois Zimmermann, allowed him to serve as exactly the right conduit for several approaches to creative music, from introducing his graphically notated scores to making a perfect context for the debuts of future star improvisors Brötzmann and Kowald. Schlippenbach's Globe Unity was first issued on SABA in 1967, then MPS a couple of years after that. It has long been out-of-print and has only ever appeared on CD in a tiny Japanese version published in 1999. Corbett vs. Dempsey's reissue comes with facsimile cover. The music was remastered from the original tapes and is licensed directly from MPS. Anyone interested in the history of improvised music needs to hear Globe Unity, which retains a sense of urgency 56 years after it was waxed.

SCHULTZ, CHESTER Within Our Reach CD
The first widely available edition of this singular, long-form composition, Within Our Reach: A Symphony Of The Port River: Soundscapes, by Port Adelaide, Australia-based pianist, composer, writer and researcher Chester Schultz. Originally self-released by Schultz in 1996, on his own Waterhole imprint, Within Our Reach was initially distributed free as a community resource, and not available for sale. De La Catessen's reissue is an invaluable contribution to developing histories of music and composition from Adelaide. It also offers the chance for germane reflection on the implications of late capitalism, gentrification, and "development" for both landscape and inhabitants. For Within Our Reach, Schultz has mapped out, via field recordings, an intricate, generous composition that documents the sounds of the Port River tidal inlet area of the greater Adelaide city. The recordings cover the period between 1989 to 1995, during which time the last of the industries based on the banks of the Port's higher land closed; there's something of a ghosted psychogeography of industry past during parts of Within Our Reach, with Schultz's evocative use of field recordings offering the listener clues as to the ongoing spatial rearrangement of the Port River area. Throughout Within Our Reach, you hear the interaction of multiple phenomena. The cawing and singing of birds, individual and en masse, broadcasts out over the submerged drone that modern transport "gifts" to the urban soundscape; for example, a rambling human voice, singing the traditional song "Down By The Riverside", is tangled up in the hum and purr of traffic, and the call of the seagull. Water and wind interact; the wind plays the guitar strings like an Aeolian harp; on "Hulks", Schultz and friends 'play' the debris of the mudflats, tapping on rusty bolts and rotting wood; a scherzo of people, wandering through the everyday, leads into a documentation of families gathered on the mudflats, playing guitar, recorder and clarinets, humming along idly; story fragments drift by, from Schultz and others. The delicate balancing act undertaken here, between the sounds of the natural world, the intrusions of the industrial world, and the constant negotiations of the people and animals that live within, and around, these spaces, is testament to Schultz's sensitive ear and careful, considered composition. Dedicated to theologian social critic Jacques Ellul, composer and ornithologist Olivier Messiaen, soundscape composer R. Murray Schafer, and the residents of Port Adelaide, Within Our Reach is a deeply moving document of the transformation of public space, and a profound, genuinely critical "music of place".

DAVIS, MILES Kind of Blue LP
Reissue. A modal masterpiece from 1959, Kind of Blue is a true classic that never gets old, no matter how many times you listen to it. Bill Evans's understated piano is the perfect foil for Miles's melodies, contrasted by the soaring alto sax of Cannonball Adderley; Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers keep the rhythm section steady but unobtrusive, allowing Miles and Cannonball to shine. "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader" are seductive, deceptive gems, imparting all the frustration, begrudging and joy as only a great jazz record can; "Blue In Green" and "All Blue" have melancholy hues and "Flamenco Sketches" a precursor to Sketches Of Spain (1960). Every household should have at least one copy of Kind of Blue, one of the greatest records ever made. Also features John Coltrane and Wynton Kelly. Black vinyl.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Oh Lord, Let Me Do No Wrong LP
Limited 2022 restock; originally released in 1987. 180 gram vinyl. "Although Pharoah Sanders was originally considered a firebrand, thanks to his wild early free jazz work in the '60s, his later records are actually more in the tradition of players like his one-time leader John Coltrane and, especially, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The title track from this 1987 session could have been on any of Kirk's Atlantic albums, a mixture of gospel sway and free jazz honk that builds into a hypnotic swoon under Leon Thomas' rich baritone vocals. (Thomas also appears on his own composition, the blues 'If It Wasn't for a Woman,' and the closing 'Next Time You See Me.') On the extended, relaxed take of Coltrane's 'Equinox,' Sanders doesn't try to copy his former boss' phrasing, but there's certainly a Coltrane-like elegance to Sanders' lyrical solo. In fact, Sanders' playing on the standard 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams,' which also features a lovely Vince Guaraldi-like piano solo by William S. Henderson III, is downright pretty. Oh Lord, Let Me Do No Wrong is a mellow and peaceful set by a player who no longer needs to make noise; whether old-school fans will appreciate this is debatable." --Stewart Mason, All Music

YONKERS, MICHAEL Michael Lee Yonkers LP
2022 restock. "There's yet another musical color revealed on the uber-rare private press, Michael Lee Yonkers, which was home-recorded in 1971 and '72, while Michael was working in an unheated, hundred year-old warehouse. He ran the forklift and drove the truck for the company, hauling extremely heavy loads of industrial surplus and scrap metal. His co-workers almost exclusively listened to country and western music, which inspired him to create and perform an oddly countrified set on weekends, when he would play in coffeehouses and at house parties. Yonkers would do an acoustic set of original 'country' and 'rock' music for the first part, then he would get out an 'electronic music machine' that he had built himself and play 'electronic music' (quotes all added by Michael himself). Michael Lee Yonkers is a recording of some of the 'country' songs he was doing at the time, as well as a few songs he wrote for the children at the house parties (like 'Mrs. Jennings Fruit Fly Farm,' recorded live, where you can hear the kids going nuts). The tracks were recorded on a variety of tube-type, reel-to-reel tape machines, which give them a unique analogue sound that begs comparisons to outsider hillbillies like Peter Grudzien, Holy Modal Rounders, and The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, as well as beloved longhair outlaws like Townes Van Zandt and Kris Kristofferson (ok, even one St. Johnny Cash too). The original art and labels have been faithfully reproduced and, with a discreet remastering touch, the tracks sound better than ever."

DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL Imago Cells CD
Dub Spencer & Trance Hill have been in the music business for about 20 years and are still as hungry as a caterpillar in the leaf forest. Supposedly, the dub component always dominated, no matter if it was humorously-intelligently mixed with Christmas songs, spoken words or Italo Western. But the electronic, the psychedelic, the "trance" always played an important role in the work of the Europe-wide known Swiss band. Now, finally, this facet gets its due place on the new, 12th long-player of the quartet: Imago Cells is the name of the album and marks a metamorphosis. So out of the old arises the new, and so the dub merges with electronic dance music or better: "trance music". The tracks are clearly in the sign of the up-tempo and invite a rave. Furthermore, the sound has become even more bassy and psychedelic, but without losing the organic touch. So bubbling, echoing and grooving then the eight songs beastly good, sound unmistakably like Dub Spencer & Trance Hill and at the same time you understand that the only way is the new. A truly magical moment, like the birth of the butterfly.

VA Ghost Riders CD
A North American road trip of coming-of-age garage soul mapped by Ivan Liechti, Ghost Riders is Efficient Space's latest narrative compilation, hovering in a liminal emotional ravine between moonlight melancholy, teenage heartache, and unchecked, unrealized ambition. Across seventeen open hearted ballads recorded 1965-1974, the album collects and connects dots between British Invasion fanatics, child prodigies, the loners and the luckless, in a kind of trans-continental survey of those swept up in rock n' roll mania and buoyed by local newspaper ads promising fame and gold records. From the tangerine dreams of eight grade all-girl combo The Mod 4 to the tri-state jukebox aspiring echoes of The Tempters, The Yardleys' poetic Farfisa vamp and lilting folk pop, and The Landlords' weepy break up B-side blues, these are mostly one shots by dreamers whose experience was brief before being checked back to the reality of suburban normality and realistic career options. Hailing from the regional backwaters of Illinois, Arkansas, Nevada, Massachusetts, Ohio, Idaho, Texas, and beyond, the licensed artists were scouted by way of local fire departments, spiritualist fellowships and animal welfare centers, often barely a stone's throw from where their contributions were originally laid. A barely teenage Dennis Harte's "Summer's Over" perhaps best taps the collection's essence. A gut-wrenching lament of the passing of the season as if it was the last on earth. Flanked by players from The Left Banke, Harte, a now-piano tuner to the stars, is from the minor segment that found longevity in showbiz. Likewise with Michigan icon Lyn Nowicki who cast her ghostly voice over Beatles cover song chameleons The Common People and Jerry McGee, The Ventures member and conduit of Dr. John's "Twilight Zone". Ghost Riders simmers with the scent of youthful summers, the pang of schoolyard romance, and the excitement (and disenchantment) of teenage naïveté, delivered via a deceptively simple and frequently wonky garage band set-up. The vision of record collector and graphic designer Ivan Liechti, these eternal psych-folk howlers are further crystallized by Colin Young's fastidious audio restoration, the original artwork of Elise Ganebin-de Bons and an aptly penned forward from Sonic Boom. Also features Decompressed Impossibility, The Living End, The Newports, The Landlords, The Prisners Dream, The Fortels, The Bohemians, Tresa Leigh, WM. Penn & The Quakers, Carroll, and Toe Head. CD version comes as digipak and includes booklet.

RATOS DE PORAO Necropolitica LP
Brazil's undisputed thrash-punk masters return with a brand-new studio album. Eight years after the acclaimed Século Sinistro (2014), Ratos De Porão are back with another slab of relentless, intense and socially engaged crossover thrash in their unmistakable style, this time with a stronger-than-ever political message reflecting their absolute contempt against the authoritarian government that has plagued Brazil in recent years. Musically, with a career spanning through five decades, Ratos De Porão show no sign of weakening and reconfirm themselves as the absolute champions of South American hardcore. Ten songs full of metal and punk mayhem keeping it fresh and dynamic at the same time, led by Jao's manic riffing and Gordo's massive, vitriolic shouts of rage. With no doubts the world's most famous basement rats have nailed it another time with a devastating album, still sounding exciting and relevant, which is an amazing achievement in punk that most other bands of that age can't claim! Glossy gatefold jacket with 12?x12? booklet.

MIQUELA E LEI CHAPACANS Miquela e Lei Chapacans LP
The first progressive girl group of the French Occitan language pop scene bring you folk funk, sun-baked bossa, Coltrane jazz and their own brand of punky "Dizco Rural" against an untouched French Balearic backdrop spanning the late '70s and '80s. If even the most assiduous of European record collectors consider the Occitan language music scene to be France's best-kept secret then it's as fair to say that the incredible multifaceted recordings of langue d'oc prog girl group Lei Chapacans has spent the last four decades hiding in plain sight. In all fairness this overlooked treasure chest of minority language excursions into folk funk, Balearic, bossa, John Coltrane-penned jazz, baroque psych, Palestinian poetry, comedic synth skits (and even the rawest form of femme-fronted multi-lingual punky disco) has been stowed away in inconspicuous photographic record sleeves, falsely evoking something closer to contemporary C&W while oft-misplaced in record shop cassette racks alongside "traditional" spoken-word and scholastic albums. So, for the uninitiated, don't be too hard on yourself. The fun starts here. For those who are familiar with the rare and sought-after one-off solo album by Occitan singer Miquela (FKR 103LP) and have craved for more, then you've come to exactly the right place. Lei Chapacans (a name that roughly translates to "The Vagabonds") is the all-girl vocal group assembled by Miquela herself just two years after her debut release, having toured the world and snubbed major label record deal offers with a steadfast allegiance to the protection of the Occitan language in which this album is primarily penned and performed (minus a small amount of German and sarcastic English in one rebellious instance). For European collectors with a penchant for French savoir faire, but have further yearnings for folkloric femme funk, then it's time to look towards the Occitan sunset where you will meet Lolo, Miquela, Sophie, Irena, and Denise. These amazing, and undeniably culturally important recordings might have taken some time to find a wider audience, but for music lovers, crate diggers and vinyl vultures alike there are still a lot of tasty morsels out there to be scavenged and devoured, ask any self-respecting Chapacan and they'll concur wholeheartedly.

LIRAZ Roya LP
LP version. The new third album from award-winning Israeli-Persian singer Liraz is an invitation to dream. Anthems, love ballads, glittery Middle Eastern dance tunes -- a collection of 11 tracks that enrich that signature blend of tradi-modern rhythms and retro-Persian sonics. Liraz and her Israeli sextet (three women, three men) recorded Roya over ten days in Istanbul, in a basement studio hidden from public view and crackling with creativity. With them, on violin, viola and the tar, the wasp-waisted wooden Iranian lute, were composers and musicians from the Iranian capital, Tehran. The same clutch of anonymous players who previously collaborated with Liraz online, under the radar of Tehran's secret police, for her feted 2020 album, Zan (GB 101CD/LP, 2020). Players who'd travelled undercover from Tehran to Istanbul to work with Liraz and producer/multi-instrumentalist Uri Brauner Kinrot in the flesh. Featuring music written by bassist Amir Sadot, "Doone Doone" is a rollicking ode to the Tehrani musicians Liraz befriended through computer screens. "Mimiram" delivers dramatic protestations of love with knowing irreverence; while "Omid" -- with lyrics by an anonymous Iranian female musician and music by Zan co-writer Ilan Smilan -- tells of a man named Hope and of hope, who is also a man. A slow, lonely song about Iran, the string-and-synth-driven "Tanha" was recorded on the day the Iranians may or may not have arrived in Istanbul. Her Hebrew accent intact, her confidence boosted by prestigious awards (Songlines Artist of the Year 2021) and widespread international acclaim, Liraz has never sounded so passionate, so strong and defiant. Roya, then, is the next phase of a high-profile career further distinguished by a drive to fight oppression, to champion the right of women everywhere to sing, perform and be heard. Liraz grew up dancing to the music of divas such as Ramesh and Googoosh celebrated in Tehran in the '60s and '70s, the golden age of Persian pop. She also loved female singer-songwriters: Kate Bush, Tori Amos. Lessons in singing, music and acting -- and a stint spent clubbing - were followed by three years working in the US as an actress, appearing in the big budget films such as Fair Game and A Late Quartet. Liraz also appeared as a Farsi-speaking Mossad operative in the 2020 Apple TV espionage series Tehran. In Tehrangeles -- the Little Tehran of Los Angeles -- she found her people, embraced her inner Persian. With each album, Liraz has grown bolder, more outspoken (ask her about Palestine and she'll extol Palestinian rights, too). Recorded in secrecy in Istanbul with her band from Tel Aviv and risk-defying Iranian musicians from Tehran. A musical portal to a place of peace, joy and unfettered freedom.

AL-QASAR Who Are We? LP
LP version. Middle Eastern psych-rock collective Al-Qasar's debut album is an explosive mix of heavy Arabian grooves, global psychedelia, and North African trance music. The band calls it "Arabian fuzz." Brazenly electric and deeply connected. When continents collide, they make a thunderous sound. Al-Qasar create the soundtrack to that fission on their full-length debut, Who Are We? The musicians came together, from France, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and the United States. Shows followed, first in France, then in Europe and the Middle East. They put out an EP, the widely-lauded Miraj, recorded in Cairo. Work on Who Are We? began in December 2020, with Attar Bellier composing eight tracks that writhe and roar in skillfully controlled chaos. Bass, drums and traditional percussion create a deep, irresistible groove for the foundation, while electric saz and guitars build a wailing wall above, with Moroccan vocalist Jaouad El Garouge's ecstatic voice, steeped in his Gnawa upbringing, pulling inspiration from history as it strides into the future. Drawing on years of experience working in Los Angeles studios, Attar Bellier produced the album. Who Are We? translates the sound that inhabited his head into something physical that stirs spirit, heart and feet. The Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra was a natural addition to "Ya Malak," his inimitable voice reciting a translation of Egyptian revolutionary poet Ahmed Fouad Negm, elevating the record's social critique while showcasing the first-ever English recording of Negm's work. Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth layers textured, brooding guitar over the first two cuts, "Awtar Al Sharq" and "Awal." The sweeping drones embrace the Moroccan bendir groove to magical results. Hend Elrawy, the acclaimed Egyptian singer whom the band met in Cairo, brings her powerful voice to "Mal Wa Jamal", whose Arabic lyrics promote a female-centric and humbling outlook on prostitution and its consequences. Like the other songs on the album, its social consciousness is carefully veiled in images. "Hobek Tawrat," for instance, can be taken as a love song, with its seductive, ringing opening on the electric saz that leads up to the aching voice of New York-based Sudanese innovator Alsarah (Alsarah & The Nubatones). One of the band's great coups is the track "Barbès Barbès," an ode and homage to the neighborhood in Paris where Al-Qasar first came together. The iconic Mehdi Haddab (Speed Caravan) added his oud virtuosity to the track. Who Are We? is a deep, exhilarating album. Its intensity never wavers, music that pulls from the hypnotic roots of North African trance and threads it into a fabric with the elaborate beauty of Arabic scales and the shock and thrill of rock'n'roll. Mixed by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey). Mastered by Grammy-winner Dave Collins.

GRAINDORGE FEATURING IGGY POP, CATHERINE The Dictator 12"
A thrilling collaboration between the acclaimed Belgian composer/instrumentalist Catherine Graindorge and the ever-iconic Iggy Pop. Haunting string and electronic textures melding with Iggy's baritone, cautionary tales. A deep dive into the heart of these unsettled times. It all began with the radio. Together, they've forged a meeting of minds and spirits that's resulted in the The Dictator, an EP that combines their talents: her music, his voice. "He played two tracks of mine on his BBC 6 Music show,"Graindorge explains, "so I sent an email addressed to Iggy to the producer of the show, saying that I was very honored and that I'd be delighted to work on a track with him. It was completely spontaneous; I never thought anything would really happen." But it did. To her disbelief and absolute delight, a reply came two days later: Catherine, I would love to make a track, Iggy. In addition to solo work and being part of the band Nile on WaX, she's worked with artists like Nick Cave, Hugo Race and esteemed producer/musician John Parish. Still, she expected nothing more than to add her violin to a song of his. Instead, she recalls, "Iggy said to send him a track. I began to improvise, and came up with three pieces at home. We communicated and began to exchange ideas." Her wish turned into a fever dream of creativity. "Over Christmas I recorded another track that was more rock. That grabbed him. Then he wrote the lyrics for 'The Dictator' two months before Russia invaded Ukraine." His inspiration came from her sounds and musical structures, and the world he sees around us. "There is a gothic masonry at work here, with a very old force abetted by very cunning structures," Iggy observes about Catherine's music. "My contribution is to report, through words, the current threat, and the longing for happiness and peace."

HALE, TERRY LEE The Gristle & Bone Affair CD
The Gristle & Bone Affair, Terry Lee Hale's 14th record, the second he's made in his home of 20 years in France, and first in his recently adopted city of Marseille. This finds him considering the life he left behind in the US, his time in Europe, and at some of the things the future might hold. Instead of the fingerpicked guitar front-and-center, often his hallmark sound, now the instrument -- and his voice -- stand as the bedrock of all the music here; he's become part of the ensemble. He's covered a lot of distance in his time, but one of the most important stops was in Seattle, a place he says was "foundational." He was the only singer-songwriter on Sub Pop 200 (1988), the compilation that announced grunge and brought the city to the music world's attention. It was in Seattle that he released his first LP, and came to know many of the musicians, like Jon Hyde who adds steel guitar here. He also formed a close, lasting friendship was Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts, who's produced The Gristle & Bone Affair, as well as several of Hale's earlier albums. On "Oh Life," where Ziga Golob's (Chris Eckman, Steve Wynn) warm, plucked notes on the contrabass makes an introduction for Hale's crisp yearning falsetto calls, an evocation of an American West that's all but vanished. This time around, there's only one track where Hale's guitar stands out alone, the sole instrumental on the album, "Doesn't Matter Anymore." As producer, Eckman suggested some artists Hale had never worked with, like Catherine Graindorge (Iggy Pop, Nick Cave), whose violin work haunts "Oh Life" and adds a deep resonance. The Seattle that's developed since Hale left is there in the sympathetic, clear backing vocals of Claire Tucker, bringing everything full circle. The sound and claustrophobic feel of "Alive Inside," a loving, sympathetic song about the interior world of a man with Alzheimer's is mostly due to the work and imagination of Matt Emerson Brown, the mixing engineer, who had as much of a free hand as the instrumentalists. It's heartfelt poetry, tender and aching and caught in a small space, so different to the sweep of road and distant horizons that echo through "Curve Away" which features Chris Cacavas (Dream Syndicate, Green on Red) on keyboards.

MORTENSEN, ASTRID OSTER Gro Mig En Blomst LP
"One first heard the Danish artist Astrid Øster Mortensen as a surprise guest vocalist on Gustaf Dicksson's Blod album, Missväxt, which Grapefruit released in 2021. New in Gothenburg, the Denmark-born Mortensen had been frequenting the Discreet Music shop where various musicians of the underground scene communed and shared their latest projects. Learning that she was a musician too, Dicksson asked Mortensen to contribute vocals to Missväxt and it wasn't long before she handed over a master of her own music which completely floored everyone in the scene who heard it. The recordings eventually materialized as Gro Mig En Blomst. An LP which was released in a very small edition on Dicksson's Förlag För Fri Musik label in March of 2021, causing a sensation of wonder and well-earned praise and some panic due to its scarcity. Gro Mig En Blomst is at once wholly immersive and something quite rare -- an infectious collection of essentially experimental music derived from familiar organic sounds stitched together with delicate, sometimes improvised music, poetry, and haunting folk melodies. Akin to the pastiches composed by the equally enchanting Gothenburg collective, Enhet For Fri Musik, Mortensen's album is mysteriously irresistible despite offering what most would consider a challenging listen. It immediately became an essential release and sold through its 300 copies quickly before the ink was even dry on the superlative reviews. So, it was with great pride and pleasure that Grapefruit worked closely with her to offer this new reissue. Herein one will find songs which often begin with chatter and ambient sound, with Mortensen seemingly extracting beauty from the random and chaotic, splicing in snippets of birdsong and rainfall as well as electronic noises. It might be tempting to assume these songs are accidental, wholly improvised, or captured moments due to the ephemeral qualities of the music and the ease of execution which lure us into the world Mortensen has created. But, it is actually evidence of the skill and finesse of a confident artist in full command of her medium."

WHITE HILLS The Revenge of Heads on Fire CD
"Pure psychotropic madness. A screaming head on fire penetrated my chest, jolting me from the universal plane back to earth." Guitarist/singer/sonic alchemist Dave W's vivid fever dream ignited The Revenge of Heads on Fire, White Hills' latest release, which harnesses the energy of ferocious, hedonistic rock with blissful passages of dark ambience. Exploring themes of mortality, transformation and rebirth, the band reveals a spiritual depth unparalleled in previous works. The roar of fire, swirling of oceans and hallucinogenic visions can be heard throughout the 75-minute journey. From the intrepid prelude "The Instrumental Head" to the closing punk blaze of "Eternity", the album ebbs-and-flows, smoldering and seething in the middle with the 21-minute mammoth opus "Don't Be Afraid". The Revenge of Heads on Fire consummates Dave W's prototype for the 2007 release on Rocket Recordings, Heads on Fire, later picked up by Thrill Jockey. Six rediscovered songs accompany re-mixed versions of the original material, fulfilling the master arch of the pyre lit long ago. Recorded during the band's tumultuous early years, the music vibrates with the energy and volatility of a sonic boom. The album will be released on Heads on Fire Industries. "'Don't Be Afraid' alone makes this an essential listen for fans of contemporary psychedelia." --AllMusic

Langen Ro, Norwegian Grammy winner Brødløs and St.Hanshaugen Steel (HUBRO 2642CD/3642LP), followed soon after. Now, the stage is set for something quite different. The Studio Intim Sessions Vol. 1, Sundstøl's fifth solo album, has taken a trip on its own, away from the cinematic Nordic noir and genre-crossing soundscapes we know, and ended up somewhere south of the Kattegat. ZABRECKY Seance! With Zabrecky LP
"The title of the green glow-in-the-dark vinyl record is not merely a title: it is the first step on a journey to exploring the spirit realm with Zabrecky as your tour guide -- just in time for Halloween. On the off chance that you are unfamiliar with the work of Mr. Zabrecky, it will behoove you to know that that he's had one of the most illustrious, interesting and eclectic careers imaginable. He first came into the public eye in the 1990's while fronting the popular angst-ridden pop punk combo Possum Dixon. Unlike other artists, his quick, quirky intelligence and onstage intensity didn't result in a solo rock'n'roll career, but directed him to explore far more esoteric avenues. His later incarnations -- all fueled by the same fascinating power -- lead him to become an actor, a world famous award-winning magician, mentalist, author and professional auctioneer. Equal parts persuasive snake oil salesman and unctuous supernatural aficionado, he is possessed -- pun intended -- of an odd, slightly eerie sense of humor... or perhaps it is that Zabecky is dead serious -- and his convictions are merely perceived as humor? For well over a decade, within the mysterious, chain and shackle- bedecked walls of The Houdini Room at The Magic Castle, Zabrecky has conducted literally hundreds of seances. One day in the not-so-distant past, Zabrecky had a revelation... or was it advice whispered from The Beyond? 'It occurred to me that people could conduct their own séances in the comfort of their living spaces or in nearly any space,' Zabrecky said. Harking back to his time in the post punk milieu, in which the DIY ethic came to a head, he continues, 'They don't need me, they just need this record. Who wouldn't want their own do-it-yourself séance record? Hard to imagine that it hasn't been done before.' Produced by the illustrious Emmett Kelly, Séance employs several 1970s analog synths as well as harp and other instruments that wouldn't 'normally' be associated with a séance; the addition of Zabrecky's hypnotic spoken vocals lead the listener to explore new realms. The end result is a record that could be considered a spooky-cool novelty... or lead the listener directly into the vast realm of The World Beyond The Veil. Ultimately, the listener will decide on the direction this record leads them... perhaps with a bit of help from a long lost loved one... or a disincarnate entity from the shadows. Either way, as Zabrecky opines, 'The main rule of the séance is: if you believe, you will receive." --Pleasant Gehman

DE DONA, GIOVANNI Grillen CD
An octophonic performance realized on September 7, 2011 for Dolomiti Contemporanee, an improvised concert for technological apparatuses and insects: through the use of Diachronic, an innovative software conceived and produced by the artist. A dialogue opens with the crickets selected and microphone-controlled in their boxes placed inside a deserted industrial area of the Dolomites, staging a vision of continuity between man and nature, mediated by technology. The crickets were observed and fed for days, separated into four different groups according to aptitude and species, corresponding to four separate channels, as if they were four teeming autonomous, living and responsive instruments. Diachronic is a patented instrument inspired by the plastic dynamism of the Futurist Umberto Boccioni, free jazz, and the elliptical regularity of Kepler's laws. It allows you to draw speed variations in real time while maintaining the same duration of the measure, to improvise as the sound paste unfolds over time. This digital instrument is used during the session to dialogue with the crickets, which reacted particularly to sharp peaks, while in the second part it becomes the exclusive and artificial protagonist, and is used to rework the recorded material.

COH Live at GES-2 CD
Recording of the entire session performed at "Geometry of Now", the audiovisual festival organized by the V-A-C Foundation and curated by Mark Fell that took place at the former power station GES-2 in the hearth of Moscow (2017). CoH, the alias of Ivan Pavlov, is a Russian word for both sleep and dream, spelled in Cyrillic and pronounced as "son". Having left Russia for Sweden in 1995, CoH produced an extensive catalog of releases, including several notable collaborations with leading figures in industrial music, such as Cosey Fanni Tutti and Peter Christopherson of Coil/Throbbing Gristle. His dreamlike progression resonates here within GES-2, an exceptional monument of industrial archeology from the early 20th century, which Renzo Piano transformed into a multifunctional exhibition space whose renovation was completed later in 2021.

ARDLEY, NEIL Kaleidoscope of Rainbows LP
Reissue, originally released in 1976. Kaleidoscope of Rainbows in unmistakably a trait d'union between the British (orchestral) jazz-rock heritage and a more confident way of writing. Heading clearly to different directions, the album showcases the talent of the main composer with the singular talent of trumpet player Ian Carr (Nucleus), cello player Paul Buckmaster (otherwise known for his collaboration with David Bowie and Miles Davis) and master clarinet player Tony Coe. This is the final part of an Ardley trilogy, preceded by Greek Variations (1969) and A Symphony of Amaranths (1971). Here, Neil Ardley uses Balinese scales -- the pelog, a Gamelan scale comprising seven notes, and the slendro, an older, more commonly used Gamelan scale. They are used in a variety of note patterns, each unique combination the basis of a series of "Rainbow" compositions, from "Rainbow 1" to "7". This brand new concept is fitting, showing different strategies and a more exotic feel with a certain minimalist counterpoint. A new beginning to a certain degree, with the spacey 1979 masterpiece Harmony of the Spheres soon to come. Fully licensed. 180 gram vinyl.

PEOPLE Ceremony-Buddha Meet Rock LP
Reissue, originally released in 1971. A monster on its own Ceremony-Buddha Meet Rock still is one of the most enigmatic records to have come out of the early seventies Japanese underground. Composers Yusuke Hoguchi and Naoki Tachikawa are the main conspirators here. The album is clearly informed by the flower power counterculture, is full-on mysticism -- with Buddha chants all over the place -- and trippy guitar playing make room for an otherworldly experience. The album opens with a rendition of "Holy Thursday" lifted from David Axelrod's masterpiece Song of Innocence (1968) and sets the mood for a series of ancestral musical performance. Released on Teichiku Records in 1971, this album still stands as one of the most original pieces of art coming from the eastern side.

ASHLEY, ROBERT Yellow Man With Heart With Wings CD
2022 restock; Robert Ashley's 1978 piece for voice and electronics. A two-part composition with narration (part one in Spanish and part two in heavily altered English) commissioned by public radio station KUNM in Albuquerque, this music has a plain, serene beauty. Part one is a narration by Guillermo Grenier in dreamy, flatly inflected Spanish, backed by a four-note synthesizer track, and punctuated by mysterious, heavily processed vocalizations. Ashley throws in extensive sound washes and other electronic figures which flutter in and out of the mix. The text, "Ideas from The Church," will later shows up in the 1994 opera, Foreign Experiences. It is included in the liner notes. In part two, the four-note synthesizer line returns, this time backing an ethereal, sustained chord, and the vocals sound "like a distant rendering of the earth's electromagnetic halo." Personnel: Robert Ashley - English voice and all instruments; "Blue" Gene Tyranny - clavinet; Guillermo Grenier - Spanish voice.

MAGGOT BRAIN Maggot Brain #10 (Sep/Oct/Nov 2022) MAG
"Cover art by Detroit-based graphic artist Lucy Cahill depicts Wanda Jackson as an alien because why not; with additional recent works by her inside the issue. Glasgow's justly beloved Belle & Sebastian, hot on the heels of a US tour and their best record in ages, deliver unto us decades' worth of posters and ephemera, with an interview with Stuart Murdoch on the history of the group's aesthetics. Novelist and longtime friend David Gordon lets us run the full text of his archival talk with celebrated painter and author Duncan Hannah (RIP -- and yes he goes into detail about the Lou Reed incident described in Please Kill Me). Kevin Esquire spent hours with Motown's almost-star from the 1960s and '70s, Christina Carter, and we have unpublished archival images and many amazing anecdotes. Speaking of Motown, did you know that the son of the great Marxist/Black liberation activist CLR James was in 'mixed race' band Odyssey, who had a record on Motown? We have a great feature on that. Fascinating discussion between guitarist-singer-songriter-innovators Chris Forsyth and Steve Wynn. We have an amazing excerpt from Ben Berton's new book on Dan Treacy and the TV Personalities, detailing how the first 7" came together and John Peel inadvertently named the band. Nate Carlson goes deep on the Tony Iommi era of Black Sabbath. Why Buffy Saint-Marie matters, now more than ever, by writer and musician Emily Pothast. One of our favorite writers, Sara Jaffe, tells us how her own grandfather wrote the song 'I'm My Own Grandpa'! No, really! That alone is worth admission. Plus -- there's a terrific and long and excellently illustrated feature on the country and experimental steel guitarist Barry Walker Jr by Tom Humphrey. Our SF Indie Scene Report: 2022 is so well done that it's going to knock your socks off. Plus, Lucy Sante and Mimi Lipson and the tape column and Katie Lass on her soon-to-be classic Hypnopomp LP and the great Jay Ruttenberg on Sessa, whew. Plus, also of course beautiful images galore, and more besides."

DEAF CENTER Neon City LP
2022 restock. Neon City is the debut release by Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland's Deaf Center project, finally reissued 18 years since its first appearance in 2004. Listening to Neon City in 2022 is like taking a melancholy journey down rainy city streets of the early naughts, made by the then two young Norwegians in their mid-20s after spending time together in a basement full of vintage items. Armed with young optimism and a sense of musical experimentation, they started sampling everything around them, be it an old television broadcaster, tape recorders, a game of table tennis or conversations on film and merging it with pianos, plucked guitar, strings and anything in-between. The record turned out as something unique in the fields bordering post classical and ambient music, though without landing on any set genre. The record was filling a place in music that was barely touched upon and made them further experiment with samples and classical music which landed them on the 2005's classic Pale Ravine. Although Erik and Otto both had been making music solo before, Neon City was the start of their more focused future paths as purveyors of both light and darkness in music that seeps through your soul to battle the anxieties of the world. The record comes with a remix of the opener track "Dial" by Helios aka Keith Keniff, taken from the same original. Remastered featuring new artwork; includes download code; edition of 500.

DUMP I Can Hear Music 3LP
2022 restock; gatefold triple LP version with full-color innersleeves. Reissue of the legendary second album by the solo project of James McNew (Yo La Tengo) from 1994. Re-mastered by Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission Of Burma). This album has not been available for ages and is now released on vinyl for the first time. Contains bonus material. "Some people complain that friends today are made with mouse clicks -- as if it was more personal in the '90s. James McNew, for example, became a good friend of mine in 1994. Never mind I hadn't even talked to the guy -- hell, he covered Jandek AND the Silver Apples. We had so much in common. James McNew is a fan boy. If the name-drop-list ranging from Albert Ayler to Young Marble Giants included with his first 45 didn't tell you that, the blazing in his eyes when a name like The Shaggs was uttered, certainly did. Yet McNew is not obsessed with obscurity but with music. When his debut album Superpowerless (MORR 115CD/LP) appeared in 1993, the choice of covers ranged from Sun Ra to that tune Audrey Hepburn serenaded to millions of movie-watchers, 'Moon River.' While McNew's high, sexy voice might be 'superpowerless,' his ears certainly are not. It's been the intimate sound of a four-track recorder that tied these different angles of his eclectic taste together. Yes, Dump was part of the lo-fi-generation. Nothing makes that clearer than the bonus tracks to his follow-up album I Can Hear Music. Recorded during the infamous Dutch Fast Forward Festival in 1994 in -- naturally -- a living room, it contains all that was great about the few short moons of tape-hiss: collaborations triggered not even remotely by virtuosity (had Chris Knox ever played trumpet before that afternoon?); cardboard boxes as bass-drums; the victory of enthusiasm over perfection (have Half Japanese been covered with more empathy?); Barbara Manning. The only thing that wasn't quite right about these first two Dump albums was the format. But as justice doesn't know age, it's good to see these CDs finally being pressed on vinyl. They deserve it. --Gregor Kessler, Hamburg, December 2012

MAGMA Kartehl 2LP
"Due to COVID-19, the French avant-garde band Magma was unable to perform live, so they decided to dive into the studio to create new material. This resulted in a brand-new album titled Kãrtëhl, a collective album such as they have not made in a long time. The band reformed in 2020 and added new musicians to the lineup, which created opportunities for new innovative compositions. After the rather dark 2019 Zëss, this new work Kãrtëhl features bright and resolutely optimistic collective new work, the result of an 'Operation Kãrtëhl'. The double-LP Kãrtëhl includes six new tracks and an additional two bonus tracks, which are demos from Christian Vander's personal collection, recorded at home in 1978. Housed in a gatefold sleeve, this 2LP-set features an etch on Side D."

ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO Utp_ (Remaster) CD
Released for the first time in 2009, utp_ is the third installment of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's V.I.R.U.S.'s series. It was commissioned for the 400th anniversary of Mannheim, Germany. The flowing ten-section multimedia work derives its shape from a rasterized structure of the southwestern city, founded in 1608. The recording documents the work's debut performed by Ensemble Modern at the National Theatre in Mannheim. The music embraces the electronic, piano-based palettes, an expanded array of avant-garde chamber instrumentation and natural timbres. It combined the digital visual score created by Carsten Nicolai and Simon Mayer, and lighting design by Nigel Edwards. Album art designed by Carsten Nicolai. Mastering by Bo at Calyx.

MCCARTHY The Enraged Will Inherit The Earth 2LP +7"
2022 repress; originally released in 1989. McCarthy's The Enraged Will Inherit The Earth is a musical molotov cocktail that's a mixture of power chords and virile, virtuous lyrics. The songwriting is tightly forged and their knack for producing raw pop is at its finest here. The Enraged Will Inherit The Earth is a powerful weapon that didn't get enough of a user base to make its intended impact. If the question was ever proposed, "can art be a weapon?" this album answers with a bold and resounding "yes." Limited-edition set contains the original LP plus a ten-track bonus LP and a bonus 7" with two previously unreleased tracks. ST. JOHN, BRIDGET Jumble Queen LP
Reissue, originally released in 1974. Our Swimmer present this first-ever vinyl reissue from a UK songwriting hero. English singer-songwriter Bridget St. John grew up in a musical family in Surrey, beginning on piano, viola, and trumpet before picking up the guitar in high school. In the late 1960s she met the brilliant John Martyn who quickly became a fan and brought her music to a larger audience, which included the legendary DJ John Peel, for whose label Dandelion St. John recorded her first three albums. Jumble Queen, St. John's fourth album, was originally released in 1974 on Chrysalis, following the dissolution of Peel's label. Featuring help from members of Jethro Tull, King Crimson alum Michael Giles, American guitarist Stefan Grossman, and, most surprisingly, founding Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden, the album is heady, dreamy folk-rock that stands up alongside the singer's more well-known Dandelion albums. St. John's voice -- best described as a more refined Nico -- is the focal point here. Her breathy, earthen tones perfectly complement the lovelorn lyrical content. With a more subdued sound than the rock-heavy backing group might suggest, Jumble Queen is an essential bit of UK folk-rock and singer-songwriter brilliance. After this album, St. John moved to the States and all but left the music business, not releasing another album for more than twenty years.

BARRECA, MARC Recordings Of Falling Light CD
"Marc Barreca's Recordings Of Failing Light explores the subatomic matter of ordinary instrument sounds. Pianos, glass percussion, guitars, and feedback are atomized through sampling and granular processing in search of the audio equivalent of a negative image. In the end, these granular elements became the beds and pads for elaborate extrapolations of deconstructed melodic, rhythmic, patterned, and forward-looking sound -- and with the addition of analog sequencer and arpeggiator based textures, some tracks reach back to Barreca's days with Young Scientist. Perhaps as an acknowledgment of the aesthetic guiding Jon Hassell's Seeing Through Sound, Barreca's work here finds its origin in images. The gradations and modulation of light and dark in radiographs, rayograms, negatives, old black and white and sepia-tone photos all impart and inform a shaping influence to the waveforms and amplitudes of sound found in these twenty pieces. Heavily layered, simultaneously dense and expansive, Recordings Of Failing Light is the result of experiments conducted in a sonic version of the Hadron Collider. Marc Barreca has been creating and performing electronic music since the mid-1970s. Recordings Of Failing Light is his eleventh solo album for PoL. His 1980 album, Twilight, reissued on vinyl in 2018, was one of the earliest releases on PoL. The Empty Bridge is his tenth solo album for the label. Recent releases include From The Gray And The Green (2019), Shadow Aesthetics (2018), and four collaborations with K. Leimer and two with Three Point Circle. Reissues include work on the acclaimed VOD box set American Cassette Culture, the Cherry Red compilation of seminal U.S. electronic music and the 1983 cassette, Music Works For Industry, now on vinyl. His work is also included in the Collection of The British Library."

TROPICANTESIMO Session 3 LP
Tropicantesimo is an extended musical ritual which takes shape through the celebration of sound and dance. Originally born as a regular party at the Fanfulla club in Rome, Tropicantesimo gradually transformed into a collective listening experience which eventually found place at Pescheria, the group's official home and studio. Slowly the collective animated by DJs Hugo Sanchez, Lola Kola, Rocco Mago, Gabor, and Egeeno, began to open up to impromptu jams and collaborations with musicians and DJs of various backgrounds. The rhythms are incessant, the BPM is slow and hypnotic. Voices flow between songs, messages, and pure sound. The music is kneaded organically to release energy. All this can be found through the extensive production work based on tons of recordings collected over the years. Tropicantesimo's Session 3 is the third in a series of three EPs that anticipate the release of the album Gitania. Like in the previous two chapters here you have three songs recorded and mixed at Pescheria.

BROSELMASCHINE Broselmaschine LP
Pilz present a reissue of Bröselmaschine's self-titled debut release, originally released in 1971. What an amazing improvement in the sound of this 50-year-old recording. With the help of the original analog master tapes and state-of-the-art technical equipment, the sensitive melodies of the original cast appear in a wonderful light of romance and empathy. Remastered at Dierks Studios, where the recordings were also made. Produced with the assistance of Dieter Dierks."Languorous atmospheres, lovely vocals, iridescent melodies, and shimmering solos combine on Bröselmaschine's self-titled 1971 debut album, the apotheosis of the German folk-prog scene. The quintet took their cue from England's Canterbury scene and even a traditional folk song, 'Lassie,' from that green and pleasant land. The band's signature sound was derived from Jenni Schucker's delicate and at times ethereal vocals in harmony with Willi Kissmer's stronger tenor, and that sound took on a Teutonic tinge when the pair switched from English to German lyrics. But it was the group's extraordinary use of acoustic and electric guitars that cemented its reputation . . . So self-confident were the bandmembers that they had no need for flashy musicianship, preferring instead to impress by the very understatement of their solos. The ambience is exquisite, casting a spell that isn't broken until the final note fades. A masterful album from start to finish." --Jo-Ann Greene (AllMusic)

MANDO DIAO Stop The Train LP
If there's one thing Mando Diao have always avoided, it's predictability. Almost all their work has been an unexpected reaction to their most recent venture. They are musically periodical and cannot resist creating new challenges, ways of thinking and concepts to stay stimulated. It's easy for touring bands to feel like you're being deprived of your identity, job, and money when all tours are canceled. Like most, Mando Diao were caught off guard when everything came to a halt. The first months were a bit shaky; they admit. However, they quickly picked themselves back up and decided to use the pandemic in the best way possible: by being creative. By the time the first recording session with Charlie Storm was over, the band already had half a dozen finished songs. After a total of 15 recording days, they ended up with work that amounted to an album and a half. This work will be divided into three volumes to be released in portions. The first volume is called Stop The Train and contains the songs "Stop The Train", "Animal", "Frustration", and "Loner". A mix of modern and old school, just like Mando Diao themselves.

MANDO DIAO Primal Call Vol. 2 12"
12" vinyl EP with three brand new songs. Mando Diao is back on full effect having played all the major rock-festivals across Europe in summer 2022 including Southside and Novarock. Just before the summer-season they rolled out the first in a series of volumes with sizzling hot and high-octane rock fresh of the studio. Vol. 1 (PGM 159LP) produced the radio-success "Frustration" that managed to climb all the way to No. 2 at rock-radio in Germany. Now Playground Music announce Vol. 2. The lead-track "Primal Call" is a hippie-like sounding one that draws inspiration from Led Zeppelin and King Crimson, a much punkier version. No logic whatsoever in the changes throughout the track but hey, that's how the band likes it. Full of surprises. As if the producer was a total lunatic out of control. "Fire In The Hall" is a short, intense song written by Björn and Jens. Once again, a blend of primitive rock n' roll feel and electronics. For example, the drums are based on samples of Patso's drumming. The lyrics are simple and almost trivial, with a "La Vida Loca" vibe: start a great fire, for yourself and others. Most things can be solved with a cleansing dance -- both in reality and in lyrics. "If you write the lyrics together with someone, it's easier to avoid becoming pretentious and over-analytical," they summarize. Finally, "Charlie", about their current producer (Charlie Storm). One of the greatest is having worked with so many big releases (Roxette, In Flames, Hurl, etc.) At least partly. They were excited about him and felt that he deserved a song. Or maybe they didn't have anything else to write about. Everyone had different inputs, but it ended up being a pure rock n' roll song. And a real banger.

The album progresses to include quite a repertoire of electronically-generated sounds, finding the band developing their mishmash of industrial experimentation matched by terrifying clangs, stomps, and of course, the theatrical, poetic vocal delivery of Blixa Bargeld. An incredibly aggressive album, with insistent, pounding rhythms and razors on metal, and Bargeld's voice dominating your dreams for a month after listening.

WILSON, DELROY Captivity LP
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Delroy Wilson's Captivity, originally released in 1973. Delroy Wilson was one of Jamaica's most soulful vocalists, and over a 40-year career the singer unleashed a flood of hits and a multitude of masterpieces. Born on October 5, 1948, in the Kingston neighborhood of Trenchtown, Wilson's phenomenal talent would be his ticket out of the ghetto, and his discovery by producer Coxsone Dodd in 1962 would change the path of Jamaican music. Released on Big Shot in 1973 and produced by Bunny Lee, Captivity is one of the true classics from Delroy's discography, back on vinyl for the first time since its original release.

DEMON FUZZ Afreaka! Cassette
Reissue, originally released in 1970. In a just world, Demon Fuzz would have been very successful. Sadly, however, the only real success they enjoyed is the fact that many club DJs now use their samples frequently. Although the band played most of the British underground festivals in the early seventies, Demon Fuzz were simply too way-out to make a significant impact on the college crowd and as a result they broke up after 18 months on the scene. Released in 1970, the band's only album, the extraordinary Afreaka!, demonstrates their excellence in playing psychedelic soul, dub-heavy funk, progressive rock, Afro-jazz, and Black acid rock. Limited tape version of this all-time classic.

HEADS, THE Relaxing With The Heads (Silver Jubilee Edition) 2LP
"A special 25th anniversary edition of The Heads' debut album, first released in 1996 and housed in new gatefold jackets with updated art and bonus material. Amidst a world suffocating in Britpop smarm, The Heads' debut cut a timely swath of unkempt psychedelic rock into the face of the English underground. Featuring ten tracks of guitar-driven, amp-destroying jams, Relaxing With... takes its cues from the US--Stooges, MC5, Mudhoney, Pussy Galore, early Monster Magnet -- but adds a distinctly British stamp with the drone and fuzz of Loop/Spacemen 3, the attitude of The Fall, Pink Fairies and Walking Seeds and the spaced rock of early Hawkwind. It is obvious that the four members of The Heads are music obsessives. Originally recorded at Foel Studios (owned by Dave Anderson from Hawkwind), engineered by Corin Dingley and mastered by John Dent at LOUD. Bonus LP includes the remastered tracks from the band's Radio 1 sessions from November '95, March and May 1996, along with 'Jellystoned Park' (the B-side of their 'Television' 7-inch). Jacket art has been embellished with new silver foiling and bordering. Pressed on black vinyl." "... well if that's not a freakout, then I am a Dutchman." -- John Peel, after airing the first session

HEADS, THE Undersided 2LP
Double LP version. "Presenting a remastered, 20-year anniversary edition of The Heads' third album proper, the under-rated gem in their canon that is Undersided! Originally released in 2002 on the Sweet Nothing label, Undersided was recorded in 2001 at WhiteHouse Studios in Weston Super Mare, with Martin Nichols engineering. For this reissue, the original recordings were remastered for vinyl and CD by long time Heads Masterer (!) Shawn Joseph. The resultant eight tracks are some of the best music the band have ever recorded, occurring after a bit of a hiatus following their 2000 US tour/Peel session (included in the boxset/on the 2xCD version here). The band then regrouped and worked out the tracks for Undersided, relentless rehearsing for the recording. This is a pounding sike-nightmare that shows The Heads at the peak of their powers. There's a flow throughout the album of melding psychedelic noise rock to battering rhythms and creating a bad trip for all listening -- even the gentle soothe of 'Energy' is enveloped by a white noise fury, and the intensity of some of the other tracks, like the terror inducing 'Bedminster' or 'False Heavy' (a tour worn riffmonger from 2000) and the Magnet-esque 'Heavy Sea,' showed the band as ferocious as any of the insurgent 'stoner' genre bands of that time."

MOTORPSYCHO The All Is One 2LP
2022 repress; double LP version. If Motorpsycho's The Crucible (MPCD 103CD/MPLP 303LP, 2019) -- both visually and musically -- started where The Tower (2017) ended, one can argue that The All Is One starts where The Crucible ended and thus finishes the so-called "Gullvåg trilogy". That said, The All Is One is so much more than a sequel, and very much a standalone album in its own right. While The Crucible took the band a step further out than The Tower, the new one explores new frontiers, especially with the dark, brooding landscape of the 42-minute epic centerpiece that is "N.O.X.", possibly the most ambitious piece of music they have recorded. Eight shorter tracks, clocking in between two and ten minutes, make up the rest of the album and bring some balance to the proceedings. Lyrically, The All Is One takes up the threads from the previous albums. While there is no thematic red line as such -- and not being overtly political -- it is difficult for a socially conscious writer like Bent Sæther not to observe and reflect on what goes on in an increasingly unstable world. They have also found strong inspiration and common ground in the paintings of Håkon Gullvåg, the artist responsible for the cover art. The album was recorded in two major sessions, the first took place in Studio Black Box in France with long-time collaborator and guitarist Reine Fiske. Here they mainly focused on material with more or less traditional song structures. The second session was at Ocean Sound Recording in Norway and basically dealt with the long "N.O.X." suite, developed from the commissioned music they wrote for, and performed at, the St. Olav Festival in Trondheim last summer with two of their favorite Norwegian musicians, Lars Horntveth (Jaga Jazzist) and Ola Kvernberg (Steamdome). The whole album was mixed by Andrew Scheps at his Punkerpad studio in the UK. Artistically searching as ever, and in their own way joyously stretching the rock format as out of whack as they can, Motorpsycho neither can nor will align themselves fully to any scene or genre. Traveling their own path in their own tempo, it might take longer to get anywhere, but that is just fine when the journey itself is the whole point. And what a journey it has been; this band is still peaking after more than 30 years in the business.

VA Italia New Wave: Minimal Synth, No Wave, & Post Punk Sounds From The '80s Italian Underground LP
2022 repress on yellow vinyl. What exactly happened in the Italian underground/post punk scene of the '80s, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps track down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more "national" approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban/suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here's the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation. Features Neon, ?????? (Pankow), Le Masque, N.O.I.A., State Of Art, Jeunesse D'ivoire, Monuments, Rats, Fockewulf 190, Luc Orient, Illogico, 2+2=5, and La Maison.

VA Dusty Ballroom Vol. 3: Something Is Going On In My Room LP
Here's Dusty Ballroom's third set of sides -- a rather eclectic, swingin' blend of some 1940s jump blues, '50s exotic mambo, kinky doo-wop, wild eastern surf, and Hawaiian Rock n' Roll, a coupla burlesque instrumentals and even a bit of groovy twist and soul. This record is part of an ongoing series dedicated to some often overlooked golden age dancefloor thrillers. Stag-O-Lee hope you dig this as much as they do and perhaps you will tune in on the next volume as well. Elmo Lewis is part of the Dusty Ballroom collective, shakin' the Berlin analog music scene since 2008. As mentioned on Vol. 1 (have you got it yet?) (STAGO 120LP, 21018), over time the group need to give nods and winks to the staff of several venues, lots of live artists wonderfully dedicated to old music, a few select DJs and of course those jumpin' and jivin' cats and kittens oddly enough returning to our all-nighters -- you all rock and roll! POINTED STICKS Waiting For The Real (Orange Vinyl) LP
LP version. Orange vinyl. "The Pointed Sticks were formed in early 1978 and quickly became a big part of the underground punk/new wave scene in Vancouver, Canada, gigging with bands like D.O.A., the Subhumans and the Dishrags -- they had a fun, quirky style that they combined with pure pop genius. Their first single, 'What Do You Want Me To Do / Somebody's Mom,' was released in 1978 by the newly formed Quintessence Records. It quickly took off and led to the follow up 'Real Thing / Out of Luck' single on Quintessence as well. On the momentum of these instant pop classics, the band started touring up and down the west coast of North America, the crowds grew, and so did the press coverage. In 1980 the Pointed Sticks signed to Stiff Records and flew to England to record an album. Through bad luck and bad production, the album was never released (the Bob Rock production of the Perfect Youth album came out on Sudden Death in 1981). Throughout their short career, 1978-1981, the band produced three singles and a multitude of demos and TV and radio recordings. The best of these have been melded together by Davie Wiese and Chris Cutress (producer of the fabulous Vancouver Complication album) into Waiting For The Real Thing. On this compilation one gets to hear one of the very best bands of that great musical era at their most inspirational stage."

HASSELL/FARAFINA, JON Flash of the Spirit 2LP+CD
2022 restock; double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes CD. Tak:Til/Glitterbeat present the first ever reissue and remastering of Jon Hassell and Farafina's prescient, "Fourth World" masterwork, Flash of the Spirit, originally released in 1988. Propulsive Burkinese rhythms meet revelatory, ambient soundscapes. Co-produced with the legendary studio team of Brian Eno and Dainel Lanois. Composer and trumpeter Jon Hassell has been an elusive, iconic musical figure for more than half a century. He's best known as the pioneer and propagandist of "Fourth World" music, mixing technology with the tradition and spirituality of non-western cultures. In 1987 he joined with Farafina, the acclaimed percussion, voice, and dance troupe from Burkina Faso, to record Flash of the Spirit. While the album is a natural extension of those "Fourth World" ideas, and a new strand of Possible Musics, it also a distinctive outlier in the careers of both artists; an unrepeated merging of sounds whose influence still reverberates today. The eight members of the band -- who had also collaborated with the Rolling Stones and Ryuichi Sakamoto -- brought their long apprenticed, virtuosic drumming, and melodic textures (balafon, flute, voices) to the sessions. They built up layers and patterns of rhythm, while producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois (fresh off the success of U2's Joshua Tree) created a sonic atmosphere in which they could creatively intertwine with Hassell's digitally processed trumpet and keyboards. Despite their initial skepticism, the musicians from Farafina ended up relishing their interaction with the studio team and the trumpeter/conceptualist Hassell. The music that emerged was rich and groundbreaking, a move to transcend the boundaries between jazz, avant-garde classical, ambient and the deep rhythmic tradition embodied by Farafina. On "Out Pours", the groove simmers softly, led by shifting patterns on the balafon, while Hassell's heavily treated trumpet creates breathy swirls of sound that play and dance around them. Percussion leads on "A Vampire Dances," pushing and probing and seeming to force electronic shrieks as a response from Hassell's trumpet, while the keyboard creates a bed of sound that refuses to hold still. "(Like) Warriors Everywhere" takes that idea even further. Over Farafina's surging rhythms, Hassell's electric piano and trumpet dig deep into abstract, melodic ideas hinted at by the Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis band. Farafina create the rhythms and counter-rhythms that spring and move. A new, natural trans-cultural harmony is apparent on the final track, "Masque", where percussion and treated trumpet draw the listener along on a journey through shifting landscapes.

ASMAHAN Layali Elouns LP
Amal al-Atrash (1912-1944), better known by her stage name Asmahan, was an Egyptian singer and actress of Syrian origins who lived in Egypt. Having immigrated to Egypt at the age of three years old, her family knew the composer Dawood Hosni, and she sang the compositions of Mohamed El Qasabgi and Zakariyya Ahmad. She also sang the compositions of Mohammed Abdel Wahab and her brother Farid al-Atrash, a then rising star musician in his own right. Her voice was one of the few female voices in Arab music world to pose serious competition to that of Umm Kulthum, who is considered to be one of the Arab world's most distinguished singers of the 20th century. Her mysterious death in 1944, in an automobile accident, shocked the public. Journalists spread gossip about her turbulent personal life and an alleged espionage role in World War II.

2022 repress. 140 gram LP on grey vinyl. Recorded in 1981, this classic album took the band further down the road of despair, initiated with Seventeen Seconds, with an album full of mournful atmospheric tracks, including their hit single, "Primary". "Robert Smith has expressed his appreciation for the music of Joy Division and I would say that this album, Faith, is The Cure's Closer -- dark, monotone, toy drumming with layers of anguish and compelling lyrics. 'The Funeral Party' is like Joy Division's 'Eternal' -- dealing with loss in an effective, but original way. I compare The Cure's Faith album to Joy Division's Closer only to express how well I feel Robert Smith managed to make an effective album -- this is original, unique and beautiful music."
