RADIVOJEVIC QUARTET, IVAN In Plain View CD
New Serbian jazz wave. They call it that. And, for some time now, it has been closely linked with A.MA Edizioni. Today it is the turn of Ivan Radivojevic, a young (thirty-one years old) trumpet player from Belgrade, who got noticed by the label playing in the combo of Max Kochetov of whom a few months ago the label published Altered Feelings and previously with Sanja Markovic for the album Ascension in 2020. Radivojevic, like every one of his generation, is one who moves in a sprawling way between jazz and hip-hop, passing through forays into reggae, rock, and soul. In short, very modernly his is a synthesis music that tries to use the most disparate experiences to get to propose something personal. On In Plain View all this is certainly not perceivable in terms of musical proposal: it is his mentality, open to the use of other languages, that strikes you and makes you touch with hand (better with the ear) than in those parts -- it seems for some time now -- a scene has been developing from which some of the most interesting musicians of this turn of the millennium are emerging. At least in Europe and at least for what concerns jazz as we are used to living it in its most adventurous sense. The trumpeter already boasts a very respectable curriculum having accrued the attendance of prestigious masterclasses with old and young African American lions (from Eddie Henderson, James Moody, and fellow countryman Stjepko Gut to Charles Altura and Joel Ross). In Plain View collects complex music -- and this does not mean that it is difficult to use -- the testimony of a curious mentality, attentive to everything that happens, always at the service of music. The combo is completed by very young shoots from the Serbian scene, all to keep an eye on -- and who will soon be talked about. And not just in Serbia.

KOT KOT I Pni LP
"In the old attic, among dust and dimness, I once found an old children's magazine, that opened itself on a photograph of three melancholic girls eating soup." A distant voice, quietly singing ravels of poems from the 19th century, all gone and forgotten long ago, is accompanied by monotonous loops, played on toy keyboards, or are they maybe a rustling and hissing of twigs on the roof? Repeating gusts of wind, slightly moving curtains over a flaking window frame? The pace of moonlight on the carpet? Do you also hear a horn, every now and then sounding from a frayed and yellowed picture of a castle on flower dotted wallpaper?Kot Kot's I Pni ("and stumps") LP brings another glimpse into Lena Filatova's sound gathering and recording process and her unique sensibilities. Feeling as though born from some kind of advent calendar hiding forgotten sounds, neglected moments and haunting sentiments, waiting there for those inclined to have a look. Lena is curiously opening doors individually and in new unisons to arrive at sound collages and compositions born from both accident and design (see the 5/4 odd time signature in "Ottepel"). Vocals that are fragile yet often laced with a feeling of determination and emotive persuasion. Lyrics pulled from old children's books, juxtaposed with often dark and foreboding loops and samples that dance asynchronously around each other beneath Lena's voice and piano/toy keyboards. Often recognizing and embracing the magic in imperfection and choosing to keep early takes and improvisations, capturing and treasuring what others might have failed to recognize and hold dear. Lena is always demonstrating an innate ability to sew all of these things together in such a way as to cast a spell on the listener from inside a zoetrope of curiously collected and curated frames. I Pni is a big and serious poetic work about the most hidden, almost lost and perished, but forever wandering between sleep and waking in an eternal hauntological dream of an old attic. Includes lyric sheet; edition of 300.

ENHET FOR FRI MUSIK Dokument 1: Improvisationer Och Bandmusik For Vilt Dansande Sjala LP
Originally released in 2015 on Holiday Records. In dark times of geopolitical powerplay and war mongering, artistic counter attacks are often shaped as quests for openness and liberation. No troupe within the current musical underground embodies this urge like the Gothenburg sound dwellers of Enhet För Fri Musik. With spiritual roots in the candor of the 1960s free jazz and the raw aesthetics of early 2000s free folk, Enhet started delving into different forms of (semi) improvised musical expression around 2015. "Fri Musik" is a very apt generalisation of previous liberating endeavors in music history, since the Enhet does not approach the freedom trope from a genre bound perspective, they are as much folk as they are ambient or lo-fi cassette experiment. At times they sound like an indigenous tribe from some undefined part of the world, then again like hazy mutterings from a long forgotten utopian hippy commune. On Dokument 1: Improvisationer Och Bandmusik För Vilt Dansande Själar, spontaneity is celebrated over orchestration, imagination over production. The story goes that it was the group's aim to record a progressive jazz record, only brilliantly failing in doing so. They would sit together drinking, only to see someone picking up an instrument every now and then and having a go at it. The record, then, is labeled as a "document" for a reason. What is offered here are stimuli of what could possibly become ballads, but obstinately refuse to do so. It is a registration of their hiss drenched freedom culture, not "an album" as such. The drafts and sketches are molded into miniature song deconstructions that synthesize DIY sound culture of the last seven decades in a way that is both local and universal. As if it could only have come from the country that also sprouted Philemon Arthur & The Dung, but at the same time sleeping in between Un and Brannten Schnüre. The wild dancing souls that are mentioned in the record's title are haunting through these documents as the summoned predecessors, but they are also the souls of the listeners. Witnesses who are evoked to be alienated and disoriented into the Enhet's cult of intuition, soaked into an ambiguous organism that is nightmarishly intimate, and soothingly discomforting. Includes large poster; edition of 500.

BLOD Leendet Fran Helvetet LP
Originally released in 2017 on Förlag För Fri Musik. "It's been a true pleasure but also a rather chaotic experience to follow the progress of Blod from a close distance since the beginning. I have fond memories of receiving the odd cassettes from the early days, like the severely fucked up Unga Röster (later issued as an LP on Förlag För Fri Musik) and the awfully mesmerizing Prat Om Depression recording. Returning to Leendet Från Helvetet for the first time for long a while, it's quite evident that the album marked a new phase in the troubled Blod universe. There's few traces left of the found tapes/audial voyeurism and brutish stop/rec editing that made up the first few releases, instead we are served with what is pretty much a proper album in a, sort of, traditional sense. The record opens with a sole beat from a hand drum soon accompanied by a beautiful and very Blod-ish subtle melody from a glockenspiel but it only takes a few minutes before Gustaf's past as a free jazz aficionado is noticeable with the rather rough saxophone burst of 'Natten'. It's not until the title track that things kicks off for real though, most likely the first example of the sound and, maybe more so, very special feeling that I would say most people associate Blod with nowadays. To me, it's the sound of growing up in Sweden in the '80s; having two channels on the TV, eating brown food, rainy summers, taping commercial stuff on the radio, playing D&D in a purple tent in the garden . . . Arguably, Blod has never sounded more Blod than on this track, this is the very essence of the man's work right here. The progam continues on side B with the solemn piano piece 'Lust', another saxophone rager and then the flipside's centerpiece 'Tro, Hopp & Kärlek' which pretty much mirrors the title track in its larger-than-life scope and pure beauty. A couple of years has passed since its initial release back in 2017 and I think it's safe to say that Leendet Från Helvetet is by far the most overlooked album in the Blod discography (well, if you can say that about a record that was only pressed in a mere 100 copies to begin with!) The blueprint to what would later evolve into the bombastic Knuta Nävar (2018), the intimate Tusen Bitar (2020), the highly confusing medieval masterpiece Missväxt (2021), not to mention all the self-released cassettes and CD-rs." BLOD Knutna Navar LP
Originally released in 2018. "Swedish progg is not to be confused with 'prog' as in progressive rock music. When we are talking about progg, we are referring to the Swedish music movement influenced by the political climate of the late '60s, to some extent the hippie movement and in many cases also Swedish folk music. Music highly driven by a political agenda. Blod's Knutna Nävar, originally released in an edition of 150 copies on Förlag För Fri Musik in 2018 and later a small cassette run, is pretty much a lost progg classic from the '70s. This is not a case of copying a certain sound though, far from it, neither are ideas really rehashed nor does the album feel nostalgic in that sense. Rather it feels like if someone has read about the progg movement and all the records but never actually heard it, yet decided to do an album and somehow managed to succeed big time. Further developing the sound palette and ambience initiated with parts of the Leendet Från Helvetet recording, the music feels slightly louder and more in your face. It's like it's more of everything. The melodies are immediate and it's quite impossible to resist the brash catchiness of it all. Albeit mentioning progg music and its importance for this recording, the actual musical side of Knutna Nävar has in reality more in common with soundtrack/library music and Swedish composers like the late Björn Isfält when you attempt to break it down. The crude DIY approach and anything-goes mentality just adds an extra dimension to it all and ultimately places the music somewhere else. There's a rather blunt use of samples throughout the record (sources probably best to leave out, though you don't have to be an Einstein to figure these out), but then again this is made by the same guy that gave the world the ABBA album. Those samples have managed to become an integral part of the music through the few years that has passed and though well familiar with the records those snippets are now to me genuinely Blod and nothing else. It seems like everyone has their own favorite but Knutna Nävar is the Blod album I have returned to the most. It has that extra something that sets it apart and if I would have to pick up a few records that sums up why Gothenburg has been a pretty damn awesome place to be in the last 10 years or so, this would definitely be one of the top picks." Includes insert and large poster; edition of 500.

MILLS, JEFF Mind Power Mind Control 2LP
"Mind Power Mind Control. The focus of this project and presentation examines the art of mental persuasion and how the mind can control as well as fall vulnerable to subservient ways. It allows the means to look creatively and more in-depth to a subject that applies to every person and at every stage of life because how we perceive or sense something is part of our evolutionary survival pattern. Because there is no exact mental compatibility between any of us, speculation and misconceptions are not exemplary so, an emphasis on 'the presentation of facts, ideas and methods and what we knew as true by example' are the major points that drives the overall purpose of this album project. Mainly artistic but scientifically as well, the album will explore various techniques used to control minds, physicality of people and inanimate objects. The objective of this project is to examine, reveal and demonstrate how humans have created metaphysical and mind-bending techniques to control people, they're minds, societies and our outlook on reality and life." --Jeff Mills

AOBA, ICHIKO Windswept Adan 2LP
"Ichiko Aoba's albums have only been available as expensive Japanese imports, until now. In November, Ba Da Bing will release Windswept Adan on 2xLP in North America, Europe and the United Kingdom, with deluxe packaging. After creating her label, hermine, last year to celebrate her tenth anniversary in music, Aoba released the most complex and rewarding work of her career, 2020's Windswept Adan. While audiences in the west are only just learning she exists, her accomplishments are unquestionable; she contributed to the soundtrack for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, was cited by Owen Pallett as an inspiration ('I've never been so blindsided by a musician as I was by Ichiko Aoba'), and has collaborated with the likes of Haruomi Hosono, Cornelius (who met her only two years after she first picked up a guitar and was blown away), Ryuichi Sakamoto, and recently Mac DeMarco. Ichiko Aoba's iconic voice and classical guitar playing are immediately recognizable, timeless sounds. Windswept Adan, envisioned as a soundtrack for a fictional film, builds its own world with sweeping co-production and arrangements from Taro Umebayashi, which 'recall the Wes Anderson scores of Mark Mothersbaugh or the cinematographic swells of American composer Jherek Bischoff' (Bandcamp). It's the story of a young girl sent to the island of Adan, a place where there are no words. While international listeners of Aoba may not understand the words she sings, and despite the central importance of lyrics in her writing, it's a testament to the power Aoba wields that one can resonate so deeply with her work. No matter the breadth of her sonic palette, and on Adan her scope is as wide and encompassing as Joanna Newsom's on Have One On Me, Aoba manifests an intimacy that makes one feel in the room with her. Ichiko Aoba's work gained greater exposure in the past year as the need for comfort grew while the world sequestered in solitude. She has a rare musical gift that is matched only by her ability to hone it into meticulous craft. Her music embraces and elevates alone time to a generous and tranquil place. In it, listeners are invited to feel a sense of consolation and possibility. The magic she imparts yields articles like 'Ichiko Aoba and the emotion of space during the pandemic;' in other words, her effect is singular."

BIEGER, HANNES Balance presents Hannes Bieger 2CD
One of Europe's most in-demand electronic music engineers turned star in his own right, Hannes Bieger's no-shortcuts approach to making wondrous melodic house and techno makes him an ideal candidate to provide a truly special mix for the long-running Balance series. Comprised of all-exclusive music from Bieger, well-established scene legends like Gui Boratto, Victor Ruiz, and Rodriguez Jr. also feature. Bieger wastes no time in getting down to business, whetting your appetite with the throbbing bass, jagged synths and heavenly vocals of "The Butterfly & The Bee", a collaboration with French-Lebanese producer Yet More. Tripolism's "Volta" segues in beautifully, with more dulcet female vocals adding a sweetness to the chromatic bassline scales and squelching synth mutations. ALX's "Beyond Light" draws in a hypnotic arpeggio that pulls teasingly in-and-out of focus while snatches of rasping synths cut through the darkness, and Bieger's "Alluvium" goes into deeper territory, channeling golden era trance with its sorrowful lead line -- but keeping things restrained with its introspective feel. Acidic bass pressure abounds on Rafa Silva's 'Prosodia', the moody vibe intensified by bold, heavily reverbed snatches of arpeggiated melody, before Thies Dry's "Nomad" comes through like a sledgehammer with its intense blasts of buzzing bass and fizzing white noise. Jason Lange's stunning "Nebula" sends tingles up the spine with its endlessly modulating, intricate melodies, leading into the blissful vocals, scintillating bit-crushed arpeggios and acid squelch of Bieger and Luna Semara's glorious "Lose Control". The second half of the mix is comprised exclusively of tracks by Bieger himself. His collaboration with Rodriguez Jr. "Orca" pulls you into a deeper place once again, but still heady pitch-bending melody abounds on this dreamy workout, while "Embers" is a pure scene-setting, brooding, atmospheric mood piece. The masterful Gui Boratto lends a hand on the spectacular "Requiem", featuring one of the mix's most memorable riffs and a lot of apocalyptic big room energy, and Hawaii's Olivia Foxglove weighs in on the dizzying riffs and techy rhythms of "Lucid Dream". It's left to Bieger & Victor Ruiz's "Virtual Love" to close the mix in triumphant fashion with its rousing chord progressions and intense climax of thick, resplendent synth tones. The mix has the curious and pleasing effect of warping time. Each track is a journey within itself, and when painstakingly fused together, their ebbs, flows and mutations give the impression that a considerably longer time has passed than 77-minute runtime. The second disc of the double-CD strips away the beats, creating a "Synthapella" version of the mix that allows the glorious melodies and atmospheres to be experienced in all their unadulterated power. Double-LP version includes download of the mixes.

Ten years on from the release of his debut LP, Stelios's detail-oriented offerings remain incomprehensibly thought-provoking and thorough with this new album. LIBERATORI, FABIO Acqua E Sapone LP
LP version. 180 gram color vinyl. Beat Records announce a new tribute to the music for the great cinema of Carlo Verdone with the release of the original motion picture soundtrack of Acqua E Sapone, composed by maestro Fabio Liberatori, the artist who features the greatest number of collaborations with the Roman director. Shot in 1983 it's the story of Rolando Ferrazza (Verdone) who, stolen the identity of Father Spinelli, finds a job as private teacher for Sandy Wash (Natasha Hovey), a young teenage model with whom he will soon fall in love. The story will come to a bittersweet conclusion, in the typical style of its director, for sure more bitter than sweet, with the unavoidable separation of the two lovers and the return to normal life, now permanently marked by the experience. A movie that, like many others shot by Verdone, was a landmark of an era, portrayed through the humanity of its protagonists, their forbidden dreams, great delusions and tragic daily life, everything narrated through a biting poetic style and delicate irony in a guise that made Verdone's cinema a unique genre. The wonderful music by Fabio Liberatori, previously partially available through a compilation dedicated to his soundtracks, now finally released for the first time in a complete edition dedicated to this score with a great electronic frame, a sound that the musician skillfully masters chiseling a series of moods throughout the story. Wonderful original artwork by Renato Casaro. This release has been possible through the collaboration with Cecchi Gori which gave access to maestro Fabio Liberatori score, remastered under his supervision by Gianrico La Rosa, and with Sony Music Italy which authorized the addition of songs, "Acqua e Sapone" and "C'é", which could not be missing from a tribute to this movie. Editing by Claudio Fuiano, graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini.

Bonfire Records present a reissue of Chris Harwood's Nice To Meet Miss Christine, originally released in in 1973. Such an elusive British artist, Christine Harwood was sailing the sea of lone folk singers with a sole album of rare beauty. Released in 1970 on small British label Birth, Nice To Meet Miss Christine is still an exercise in pure beauty, a dramatic/magic affair that materialized into thin air and suddenly was gone. Featuring a who's who of the British prog and psych-folk scene -- the late King Crimson alumni Ian McDonald on sax and flute, drummer extraordinaire Pete York, Nucleus and Jody Grind bass player Roger Sutton, Strawbs guitar player Dave Lambert -- the album is more than a miraculous rendition of the (acid) folk revival venturing on more audacious territories, as shown in the rare groove of standout track "Wooden Ships". Over three nights they pummeled, and we've culled some great photographs, a wicked recording, and even a little live video action. Ney flutes tumbling backwards over the edge of easy listening in opener "Rise Of The Equinoxians", lurking for feel good vibes in "Red Wolf Riddim" and breezing in to new dimensions in "Zing Zoing" on the A-side while the Comité enters the chambers of the '70s "Disco Skank" and rides an untamed dragon towards the scorching sun in search of a flame-bringing beat in "The Dragon Rider" on the flipside.

METRO AREA Metro Area 3LP
2022 repress. In the late nineties, the budding producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani bonded over their shared love of slower tempos and '70s and '80s New York City club culture. Obsessed with record digging and the sounds they heard on late-night "club classics" radio shows -- and turned off by current releases they saw as artlessly "updating" sublime disco by sampling, filtering, and subjugating them with huge kick drums -- the duo set out to discover how their favorite old 12" records were made. They naturally gravitated towards extended dubs of songs -- full of strange mistakes and echoing backing tracks -- instead of the better-known vocal versions. Lacking the big budgets and gear that made so many of their favorite classic records come together, they were forced to take a guerrilla approach. They reprogrammed their techno-oriented arsenal of secondhand synths and samplers, using novel digital recording technology to capture live instrumentation and prioritized mood over hooks, and the resulting music was just wrong enough to sound unlike anything else being released at the time. After just four underground 12" releases, the duo -- now well-known as Metro Area -- released their first and only album, Metro Area, in the fall of 2002. Fifteen years later, it's time to celebrate the culmination of their shared history and inspiration once again. Environ is proud to present the 15th Anniversary Edition of Metro Area, Metro Area's eponymous debut album, meticulously remastered using the original source tapes and generously spread across three slabs of vinyl. The 12-track triple LP combines all the songs from both the original US and licensed European releases, and features new commemorative artwork unique to this edition.

LPs pressed on premium audiophile-quality vinyl at RTI from Kevin Gray Lacquers; Presented in a textured gatefold Stoughton "laserdisc" jacket with a cover painting by Lisa Alvarado. Jackets, retro-audiophile sleeves and record labels hand-screen printed by Alan Sherry at Siwa Studios, Northern New Mexico. Mandatory Reality, the new album by Joshua Abrams and Natural Information Society, is here. Setting aside (for the moment) the electric instrumentation of Simultonality (GB 048CD/MTE 068LP, 2017) and Magnetoception (MTE 063-64LP, 2015), Joshua Abrams conceived Mandatory Reality for an eight-piece acoustic manifestation of NIS, consisting of himself on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet. A double album, Mandatory Reality is comprised largely of two performances, both Joshua Abrams compositions, 24- and 40-minutes in length. While new to the band's records, long duration pieces are familiar to those who've heard Joshua Abram and NIS in concert in recent years, where elaboration on a single composition for an hour or more is not unusual. Gradual tempos dominate Mandatory Reality. Recorded two months before the 2017 solar eclipse, Mandatory Reality is the sound of Joshua Abrams and NIS taking its time. Merging methodical compositions with sonically voluptuous orchestration, Abrams heightens the immersive and hypnotic qualities Abram and NIS music is known for, taking the band and the listener deep into a collective meditative space. A grand realization of long-form psychedelic music, Mandatory Reality is a dispatch from a sound world that is increasingly unique to itself. All performances on Mandatory Reality are full takes recorded live to tape by the full ensemble, magnificently captured by Greg Norman at electrical audio, Chicago -- the first true "audiophile" recording of Joshua Abrams and NIS. Mastered by Helge Sten at Audio Virus, Oslo.

SHIPP TRIO, MATTHEW World Construct CD
Matthew Shipp's new album is titled World Construct. It's a fitting title, for in his career of over three decades, he has constructed his own world of jazz. This press release could be entirely built from the raves of critics. "As Matthew Shipp's catalog expands, so does our understanding of the depth and breadth of his genius." "A gateway to higher improvisation that is practically without parallel. Matthew Shipp is the connection between that past, present and future for jazzheads of all ages." He "has produced a recording of great beauty and logic, creating distinct performances that are simultaneously shocking and beautiful, equally classic and daring. Shipp has been able to create pieces out of thin air that seem utterly worthy of composition. The music seems to be pulled directly from the realm where mathematics and magic collide. What Matthew Shipp has done is a profound achievement." "Unleashed with the kind of power imparted to them by his supple fingers, these notes and this music becomes something living and breathing, dancers indeed. Each title is seemingly a trigger which causes the hands and fingers of the pianist to leap and fly, and defy gravity not only with notes that ascend, light as air, as if to a rarefied realm. This is clearly the creation of a major composer whose pianism also suggests great cohesion of form and function, and above all, lyricism that sets Mr. Shipp apart in the same way that it did for musicians such as Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor." "Matthew Shipp confirms he is one of the best pianists of his generation. A monumental work that befits a place of choice in the jazz piano pantheon." You won't want to miss World Construct, recorded during the pandemic with his trio of five years. It will soon be seen as an important piece of the jazz edifice that is Mr. Shipp's magnificent career. Personnel: Matthew Shipp - piano; Michael Bisio - bass; Newman Taylor Baker -drums. Recorded by Jim Clouse 4/15/2021 at Park West Studios, Brooklyn NY. Cover art by Yuko Otomo.

JONES JONES Just Justice CD
Jones Jones is a funny name for an all-star band. To grant such distinctive musicians so anonymous, Google-proof a moniker is whimsical in the extreme. But, given its members' long and distinguished work in the service of music, this group should not be taken lightly or treated as a lark. There is humor in their work but also gravitas and depth and magic. Larry Ochs says: "The newest and I think Jones Jones' best recording, sonically speaking, was specially recorded in-studio just before Covid struck in 2020 and features beautiful artwork by artist Roberto Harrison made specifically for the band.""Each of the mature talents involved boasts an impressive history. Dresser was the bassist in Anthony Braxton's classic 1990s quartet, while Tarasov was part of the Ganelin Trio, hailed as 'arguably the world's greatest free jazz ensemble' in their 1980s heyday. Ochs has been one quarter of the Rova Saxophone Quartet since its inception in 1977. But as noteworthy as their illustrious track records is the fact that they still nurture an adventurous streak. All the nous derived from these various groundbreaking escapades finds its expression in their work together." --John SharpePersonnel: Larry Ochs - tenor and sopranino saxophones; Vladimir Tarasov - drums, percussion; Mark Dresser - basses. Recorded January 16, 2020 by Andrew Munsey at Studio B, UC San Diego. Mastered by Myles Boisen at Headless Buddha Lab, Oakland CA. Produced by Larry Ochs. All tracks collectively improvised by Ochs, Tarasov, and Dresser. Cover art by Roberto Harrison.

KNUDSEN, WEDNESDAY Soft Focus: Volumes One and Two CD
"First off, I should probably mention that this CD contains what might one day be two separate LPs. But if you have even a scintilla of info about the state of record pressing these days, you'll also know that all our best laid plans could go sideways. Fast. Still, this is a damn nice way to hear all this music without a lot of the endless huffing and puffing required by the flipping of individual LPs. Which means, for now you can just let the sweet swelter of Soft Focus wash over you like a warm, mid-summer wave on a tropical island. And if you want to have a cocktail while listening, go right ahead. This is Wednesday's fourth solo release, following two CDRs on Mystra and a cassette on Microdose. But she has a long recording history with the Pigeons and a few other combos. And it's her fifth appearance on an FTR release, following Viewer's New Salem MC (2017), both Weeping Bong Band LPs (FTR 313LP, 2018 and FTR 448LP, 2019), and a pair of LPs in duo with Willie Lane (FTR 530LP, 2020). We have some other pots boiling for her as well, but for now, here's Soft Focus. This project was begun last spring, deep in the Plague Era, when it was hoped things might be turning better. It is all solo work, apart from a little harp by PG Six on one track, and Wednesday displays her talents on woodwinds, guitar, keyboards, and vocals. The mood is abstract and wistful, bright at some moments and shrouded at others. Wednesday describes the sound as 'ambient,' but there's more to than that term often infers. The pieces are closer to the abstractions Eno explored on Another Green World (1975) and Before and After Science (1977) than to Music for Airports (1979) or Discreet Music (1975). There's a lovely pop sensibility hiding in them hills. And now it's available for you to hear on full repeat. You must have done something right!" --Byron Coley, 2022

MOUNT MAXWELL The People's Forest LP
A founding member of Vancouver Island's MMR Collective, and head of the Canadian experimental electronic label Hotham Sound, artist and musician Jamie Tolagson (Mount Maxwell) currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC. His music is a unique blend of analog synths and acoustic instrumentation, calling to mind such artists as Boards of Canada, Bruce Langhorne, and Tangerine Dream. A preoccupation with childhood perception, utopian thinking, and the landscape of the Pacific Northwest runs throughout his work, which has been featured in Discorder Magazine, Tabs Out, Cassette Gods, Retromania, Free Form Freakout, Last FM, and NTS Radio. The People's Forest is his fifth album."The People's Forest is packed with micro-earworm moments, nourishing synths and playful crunchy percussion. It's got a skyward gaze and nostalgia for futures never realized, packing a kind of childlike optimism inside an arpeggio-laden, hermetically sealed little sound world. When the loose, hip-hop fueled drums kick in over warm synthesizer pads, you'll probably feel the same warm sense of familiarity I picked up. Music for fans of Boards of Canada, sure, but Mount Maxwell has a wide-open pastoral landscape and identity all its own." --Optimistic Underground"Composed of seemingly small sounds, The People's Forest has an oddly natural quality to it despite being created almost entirely through synthetic means. Subtle synth lines coordinate effectively with bits of sampled audio including vocals and sounds of nature in a way that transports you to another place that feels like a home that you are yet to visit. Subdued percussion carries almost every track through these wandering soundscapes in a manner that gives the listener something to hold onto as they drift along in this other-worldly place that resembles Earth." --Rounding the Fringes

MOUNT MAXWELL Only Children LP
Only Children is his fourth album."Mount Maxwell continues his run of 1970s themed releases with a full-length meditation on the perceptual experiences of children born in the wake of the 1960s cultural revolution. Highly ambivalent in tone, Only Children marks a departure from earlier MM releases both in its use of acoustic instruments and in a newfound sense of criticality towards its subject matter; the back-to-the-land optimism of tracks like 'Nature ID' in uneasy proximity to the skeptical disquiet of 'Weird Places' and 'Nomad'. A beautiful, emotionally complex examination of the 'Me' generation's dubious decision to treat children like adults, and a haunting continuation of the Mount Maxwell experience." --Hotham Sound"Mount Maxwell was raised on a commune on Saltspring Island and grew up to illustrate comic books before releasing two cassette tapes that were sonic dedications to the original BC Ferries fleet. And with his new album Only Children, he's created something so soul-crushingly good that if I were given the choice to only have to hear one more thing, I think I would choose this." --C Diab, Resonance Extra

VA Vacation From My Mind LP
"A gift to the overthinkers and overworked. Those who are over-concerned and always preoccupied. This is an invitation to hang up the bootstraps, take a load off, and visit a place in the mind where the sun is shining, the breeze is soft and the waves lap softly at your feet. Vacation From My Mind is a sonic realignment of melancholic soul, breezy soft rock, and mellow jazz-funk. This album is a thoughtfully curated collection of 12 rare and obscure tracks from 1973 to 1981. From Jeanette Baker's hypnotic '70s soul title track 'Vacation From My Mind' to the Latin rhythms of David Buckland's jazz-funk 'Celia', this compilation was lovingly crafted to ease the stresses and worries of modern life. The Care Package's song 'The Storm' is a larger-than-life production of dreamy harmonies not often found on privately released 45s. Utopia's 'Lejos De Mi' is a slow-burning slice of Bolivian psych that will have you searching for similar sounds. Whatever your preference, we hope that this album will give you a vacation from your mind. Original artwork by Eric Thompson."

PRODIGY Return Of The Mac LP
"Issued on vinyl for the fi¬rst time ever in an opaque red pressing housed in a gatefold jacket! In the mid-2000s, as Prodigy began to map out the follow up to his solo release H.N.I.C., he worked up some new material with long-time collaborator The Alchemist. Material that was meant to be a mixtape. Just a little something to keep the fans interested until H.N.I.C. Part 2. The resulting recordings were so high caliber, so tapped into the very essence of Prodigy's Mobb Deep pedigree, just so damn good - that a commercial release of the material was inevitable -- as Return Of The Mac. Backed by classic Blaxploitation style samples from The Alchemist, Prodigy paints a picture with his words. A picture of the rough and tumble New York of his up-bringing. When issued in 2007, many considered it his best effort in at least a decade. In their review of the then new release, even Pitchfork had to admit 'Prodigy's made the comeback no one saw coming.' Fans agreed with that assessment, their whole-hearted embrace of Return Of The Mac placed the title at #32 on the Billboard Top 200."

JOYNER, SIMON Songs From A Stolen Guitar CD
"Artists are not athletes. The career of the athlete is, by mortal necessity, compressed and brief. No one expects to see a professional slugger in their sixties out on the diamond, much less see them vying for a pennant. Artists, on the other hand, tend to age like wine -- think Dylan, Cohen, and Cash -- with the most rarefied among them capable of swinging for the fences with every at bat. Omaha singer-songwriter Simon Joyner, who recently turned fifty, is such an artist, and while I'd certainly enjoy seeing his face grinning at me from a box of Wheaties, I'd rather he continue making albums like Songs From A Stolen Guitar. Songs From A Stolen Guitar was recorded across several different cities. Joyner recorded his vocals and guitar live in Omaha; bassist Wil Hendrix added his parts at home in San Francisco, Michael Krassner recorded his guitar and piano overdubs at home in Phoenix, and drummer/percussionist Ryan Jewell recorded in Colorado. This musical chain letter then made its way back to Omaha where David Nance (guitars and backing vocals), Ben Brodin (organ and vibraphone), and Megan Siebe (viola and backing vocals) overdubbed -- separately -- their respective contributions The remoteness of the individual players on Songs From A Stolen Guitar, while necessarily eliminating some of the ragged spontaneity of much of Joyner's previous work, yields a sort of silver-lining effect: Joyner's songs, produced more meticulously and perhaps more intentionally here than on any of his previous albums, cut through that much cleaner, foregrounding both his dazzling wordplay and his clarity of vision. If Ghosts [2012] was his Tonight's The Night -- clamorous, naked, and unmoored -- Songs From A Stolen Guitar may just turn out to be his Harvest." --James Jackson Toth aka Wooden Wand

PLEASE 1968-1969 LP
Restocked. Late '60s UK underground psychedelia full of dreamy vocals and organ by this group led by Peter Dunton and with connections to Bulldog Breed, T2, Gun, and The Flies. Featuring the original demo of the classic "No More White Horses", later recorded by T2 for their Boomland album (1970) and tracks like "Folder Man", sampled by Dangermouse for the famous "Going On" by Gnarls Barkley. Please were formed in late 1967 when singer/songwriter/drummer Peter Dunton and bass player Bernie Jinks had just returned to Britain after a period in Germany where they played as Neon Pearl. The first line-up of Please also included organist Jurgen Ermisch (of Neon Pearl) and guitar player Adrian Gurvitz (of Gun fame) but they left no recordings. In 1968 they disbanded and Dunton joined freakbeat-psych band The Flies, writing their killer "Magic Train / Gently As You Feel" 45. That same year the Flies split up so Dunton reformed Please along with Bernie Jinks, Rob Hunt (The Flies), and Rod Harrison (Neon Pearl). After the demise of Please, Dunton was in Gun for a short time and the rest of the band formed Bulldog Breed. In 1970, Peter and Bernie Jinks teamed up with Keith Cross and formed psychedelic hard-rock trio T2, releasing the classic It'll All Work Out In Boomland. During 1968-69, Please recorded a bunch of demos which were never released until 1996 when the Acme label first issued them on vinyl and CD as 1968/69. That was a major, exciting discovery for fans of late '60s UK psych and tracks like "We Aim To Please", "The Story", "Break The Spell", or "Folder Man" are now considered classics of the genre. Out-of-print for many years, Guerssen Records present a new vinyl edition. Hard cardboard sleeve; includes liner notes and insert with lyrics.

FERKAT AL ARD Oghneya LP
LP version. 'An absolutely legendary album from Lebanon by Issam Hajali's group Ferkat Al Ard, Oghneya stands out as one of the great musical gems of the Arab world. A groundbreaking release from 1978 that represents the meeting point of Arab, jazz, folk and Brazilian styles with the talent of Ziad Rahbani, who did the albums arrangements. Filled with a variety of sounds and genres, from Baroque pop to psych-folk to flashes of bossa nova, Tropicalia and MPB, Oghneya is like if Arthur Verocai took a trip to Beirut in the '70s to record an album. In 2015 we heard Ferkat Al Ard's music for the first time, a Lebanese trio compromised of Issam Hajali, Toufic Farroukh and Elia Saba. It is a stunningly unique release that blends traditional Arabic elements, jazz and Brazilian rhythms hand in hand with poetic-yet-politically engaged lyrics. The band was active in the left-wing movement of Lebanon of the time and they communicated their political ideas candidly through their songwriting. As always both vinyl and CD come with an extensive booklet with an interview with Issam as well as unseen photos from the recording sessions."

SOMNUS THRONE Nemesis Lately CD
Nemesis Lately is the second full-length album released by Somnus Throne. This album is very much a continuation of their first album (Burning World Records, 2020), but with much more attention to detail, a further exploration of the depths of each niche within "doom", and a greater variety of sounds. Think just as much heaviness as the first album with less drone and more action. Nemesis Lately goes everywhere across the landscape of doom, stoner, heavy psych, and grunge from a welcoming kick in the teeth by a Motorhead-esque first track, through shades of Acid King, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Black Angels, The Melvins, Dead Meadow, High on Fire, The Sword, Electric Wizard, Dopelord, Black Pyramid all the way to a concluding track that strives at echoes of Led Zeppelin's acoustic prowess. It goes without saying that the entire album, and the entire Somnus Throne catalog in total, is never more than one decapitated bat away from Black Sabbath worship.

BODZIN, STEPHAN Boavista 4LP
Stephan Bodzin proves once again why he is one of the most innovative techno artists in the world with new album Boavista. The expressive 17-track full-length lands on Herzblut Recordings. German icon Stephan Bodzin is globally recognized on a number of fronts -- his live show is one of techno's most celebrated, his productions constantly push the genre forward with his own trademark sound. He has put out well-received solo long players Liebe Ist and Powers of Ten as well as worked on many other iconic projects under a range of aliases. In the last year, Stephan had the chance to look back on the vast archives of music he has recorded but never finished. While spending time in Brazil, he picked his 25 favorites and finished them properly, with the best 17 making up Boavista. His simple aim was to tell stories with each track, to paint musical pictures that conjure up very real emotions in the listener. As always, playing the album live was in the back of Bodzin's mind throughout the creative process. This means each track is a powerful piece that is both emotional and honest, physical and straightforward, but also true to the authentic Bodzin sound. The album kicks off with the lush "Earth" which pays homage to all the elements of life -- water, fire, wind, as well as time, light and the rotation of the planet. "LLL" is an electronic lullaby track defined by a sense of love for the people in Stephan's life and "Astronautin" has a lead synth that came about after Stephan's daughter said she would like to be an astronaut when she grows up. Elsewhere there "Infinite Monkey" which was a freeform jam that was led by the music itself, the epic pads of "Dune" and interstellar explorations of the more thoughtful and melancholic "Cooper Station". "Nothing Like You" was written in a hotel room before Stephan's last pre-lockdown gig, then "Isaac" is another powerful journey through space and time, different worlds and alternative realities. Further hypnotizing highlights come from the soft melodies but powerful basslines of "Collider", the expansive synths of "Trancoso" and the delicate beauty of "Ataraxia", which references German composer Klaus Doldinger who was a huge influence on Stephan's understanding of melodies and harmonics. "Breathe" is a second spindling vocal track featuring Luna Semara next to "Nothing Like You" and closer "Rose" isa heartbreaking piano piece. Boavista is another exquisitely crafted album of rich, synth-heavy electronic music that takes you into new worlds of emotion and leaves you in awe. 180 gram vinyl; six-page gatefold cover with four printed inner sleeves.

UMILIANI, PIERO Preistoria LP
"Originally released in 1968 as part of the Serie Sonorizzazioni series on Piero Umiliani's iconic Omicron label, Preistoria is the perfect example of a library music collection perfectly tailored to a theme. Through the use of orchestral accompaniment, jazzy arrangements, and tribal experimentation thrown in for good measure, the legendary Italian composer brings you back to the stone age, creating and ominous and primitive landscape, rich of caveman-style drums and deep bass lines. This extremely sought-after gem is now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release, officially licensed by Piero Umiliani's family and available as a limited edition pressing of 500 copies."

JAZZ EPISTLES, THE The Jazz Epistles - Verse 1 LP
Honey Pie Records present a reissue of The Jazz Epistles' self-titled album, originally released in 1959. The Jazz Epistles were the very first South African jazz group who broke away from the swinging and danceable jazz forms in vogue during the 1950s. A group formed by strong personalities like pianist Dollar Brand, later known as Abdulah Hibrahim, trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonist Kippi Moeketzi, trombonist Jonas Gwangwa, bassist Johnny Getze, and drummer Makaya Ntschoko. A bunch of jazz modernists who already in the late 1950s, under the influence of the American "Bop" attitude began to switch on a more complex and hip music style. In 1959, just before breaking up, the Jazz Epistles released their first and only album, a great piece of work which stands as the first album released by a Black South-African band. A cultural manifesto as part of the anti-apartheid struggle of the time.

PHASE FATALE Burning The Rural District CD
Burning The Rural District overcomes eight tracks of heavy rhythmics, cold sequences, and blue flame atmospheres related to experiencing a closed society. This energy is tied and twisted through a widescreen vision manifested in stressful breaks/d'n'b cut-ups, and the maddening dysmorphia of bent sequences and signature fuzzy bass guitar harkening back to NYC post-punk roots. Recorded over many years entirely in Tbilisi, Burning The Rural District is influenced by the emerging super strong techno scene thriving in Georgia, despite that there is a lingering homophobia outside of the vast club culture. This is a snapshot putting a different window on that time of displacement, newness and ultimately creation. lived vicariously and personally, in the aftermath of physical street violence among ex-soviet state impromptu warehouses, to the sudden suicide of an acquaintance, in the shadow of the orthodox church, an unlikely but singular uplifting freedom emerged from this very closure. "He died in the town where he was born." Cover art by Richard Ramirez.

WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND, THE Part One LP
2022 repress. Color vinyl. "Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band were considered by many to be the West Coast's answer to the Velvet Underground. The group created California psych/rock music that was both fragile and dreamy. Part One was originally released in 1967 on Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records. Though they didn't achieve the fame or notoriety of other bands from the area, they have nonetheless achieved a cult status among collectors and people curious about a rich, albeit short-lived musical genre known as West-Coast Psychedelia. GMM WITH ROBOTNICK Don't Ask Me Why/Love Supreme 12"
One of the most sought-after Italo-disco release, the combined effort of Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici and Alexander Robotnick saw the light of the day in 1986 on Fuzz Dance, Materiali Sonori sub-label ran by the wizard Giampiero Bigazzi. Florence born producer and musician Maurizio Dami, created a mysterious character, a so-called "modular structure born out of a soviet calculator and promptly runaway". His classic "Problemes D'amour" was featured on the influential Strut compilation Disco Not Disco 2 (2002). GMM was an even more enigmatic character, one of the most unclassifiable audiovisual experiences to emerge from Italy in the 1980s. Maurizio Dami itself was responsible for the group's music output, while the unit was founded in 1984 by Antonio Glessi and Andrea Zingoni as an art collective whose production represents the quintessential expression of postmodern transmedia hybridity. Fully remastered and licensed. Edition of 500; clear vinyl.

DOPPLEREFFEKT Tetrahymena EP 12"
2022 repress. Detroit enigma Dopplereffekt has been resurrected, emerging from a grave of jagged detritus and techno trash for their first release since 2007. Dopplereffekt has always preferred mystery and myth, and the Tetrahymena EP on Leisure System is a scorching assertion of their capacity for hallucinogenic abrasion. Tetrahymena wanders through decommissioned factories and an omnipresent chemical haze, evasive and contemplative like the last man alive in a crumbling steel city. Whether in the ethereal voices and plunging bass of the title-track, the unidentified flying objects droning maliciously in the thunderous weapon "Gene Silencing," or the retch and hiss of arpeggiated bad trip "Zygote," it's a transportive journey of dread as only Dopplereffekt can create. Leisure System is proud to release the Tetrahymena EP, an essential vision of dancefloor dystopia from one of the most consistently compelling artists in electronic music.

MONOBOX Forwardbase Kodai EP 12"
You might think that Robert Hood is an artist who is content with the successes he's achieved via his solo work and those alongside daughter, Lyric (as Floorplan) but this is not a man who easily rests on his laurels so after a long-time in the planning he is set to regenerate his much-loved Monobox alias. Originally launched in 1996, his Monobox sound spanned a trio of EPs on his own M-Plant label, culminating in more releases including the Molecule album (2003) for French label Logistic, which later spawned a series of remixes including those of Ricardo Villalobos and Matthew Dear. A brief return came in 2014 as part of M-Plant's 20th anniversary celebrations, which saw the release of a new Monobox 12", Film/Rectangle (MPM 022EP). In Robert's mind the idea for the new EP and album is that this vessel has been lying dormant for 40 or 50 years and is now beginning to rise up again, or regenerate. Robert's approach to Monobox was to create techno minimalism, but from an alien futuristic perspective. Returning to the moniker, his forthcoming EP and album encapsulates this raw, bristling and sci-fi tinged techno sound. The Forwardbase Kodai EP features two new tracks (which won't appear on Regerate (MPM 040LP)) alongside a remix by Ø [Phase] and a special Robert Hood Re-Plant edit.

Speaking to Red Bull Music Academy that year for one of their Fireside Chat interviews, Robert said: "Monobox was an alien project. I read this book when I was probably around 13 or 14. NILSSON, MOLLY Extreme LP
LP version. "Extreme is Molly Nilsson's tenth studio album. Recorded in 2019 and throughout the 2020 global pandemic at home in Berlin, it is a departure for Nilsson, an explosion of angry love. It's an album of anthems for the jilted generation, soaked with joy and offering solace, bristling with distorted, metal guitars and planet-sized choruses that bring light to the dark center of the galaxy. It's an album of the times, by the times and for the people. It's a record about power. About how to fight it, how to take it and how to share it. Every song here is a gleaming gem in a pouch of jewels. Examples include 'Kids Today,' where Nilsson is the voice of wisdom, archly commenting on the eternal struggle between youth and authority. 'They Will Pay' brings big, distorted power chords in the form of a agit-punk, pop slammer. Of course, when Molly Nilsson does punk pop one gets the catchiest chorus this side of The Bangles or The Nerves. However, it's on 'Pompeii' that Nilsson delivers the album's epic, emotional heartbreaker. Like '1995' on Nilsson's album Zenith, or 'Days Of Dust' on Twenty Twenty, the lyrics of 'Pompeii' are heavy with a transcendent sadness, an aching poetry that cuts to the truth of the heart like the best Leonard Cohen lines. It contains the most personal moments of Extreme, a song lit by the dying embers of romance. Yet it's here where the alchemy at the base of all Nilsson's best work is found. Turning small nuggets of personal truth into big, generous universal moments that invite everyone to cry, to love and to fight the power. In an album of jewels, it might be the shining star. This is Molly Nilsson's biggest, boldest and most vital album to date, Extreme is about power. Against the love of power and for the power of love."

EXECUTIONER'S MASK Winterlong LP
LP version. "Winterlong, the psychedelic new album from Executioner's Mask is set for release on Profound Lore Records. An epic bouquet of swelling synths, hypnotic melodies, and noisy guitars marry post-punk and shoegaze in ten songs exploring themes of liberation and self-destruction in these end-times. In the studio, the core group of Gambit, Mickle and Wilson added Christian Molenaar into the fold on synths, adding an ethereal edge to the band's hard-driving melancholy. Additional touches were added by Kennedy Ashlyn (SRSQ) and Jake Superchi (Uada, Ceremonial Castings), their distinct sonic fingerprints sending the compositions further into territories unexplored. Featuring production from Jeff Zeigler (The War On Drugs) and Ryan Schwabe (Oneohtrix Point Never), Winterlong is the type of sublime and immersive album that inspires the same visions often conjured by masters like The National, Alcest and Deerhunter. On stage, Gambit, Mickle, and Molenaar are joined by Anthony Charletta on bass, Melissa Lochambon on drums, and Daniel Gaona on guitar to create an explosive force of sound that come together with the potency of Children Of God-era Swans. Expanding on the kaleidoscope of ambition, expect to see re-mixes of the album released in a series of their own by an ensemble cast that features members of Deafheaven, Full Of Hell, No Joy, Xiu Xiu, and The Armed amongst an army of others. The first of these Winterlong re-mix albums will be released as a bonus disc that will come with the CD release, mastered by Angel Marcloid (aka Fire-Toolz)."

VA Chicha Popular: Love & Social Political Songs From Peru's Discos Horoscopo 1977-1987 2LP
24 iconic songs, with a focus on the theme of love songs (A and B side) as well as social political songs (C and D side), highlighting the emotions that this music brought to the popular working classes of Lima, nationwide and the diaspora. More than 30 years later, these songs continue to resonate like the mirror of a country that was reborn but this time is looking at itself and its own identity. From the mid-1960s onwards, there was a unique moment of fusions in Peruvian culture brought about by Andean migration from the countryside to the city which gave rise to adaptations and intercultural mixing. The culture and music they brought created the powerful genre of Andean tropical cumbia, via electric instruments and arrangements along with modern, popular pop sounds. Peruvian "chicha" cumbia is the music born in the "barrios bajos" (slums), alleys, hills, and the peripheries of Lima on the coast and cities on the edge of the Andes mountains in the late '70s and '80s. The true new Peruvian sound was not played with folk instruments but with guitars and timbales. In the '60s and '70s Peruvian tropical music was characterized by psychedelic hybridity and instrumentals for mass delight, by the mid-70s the appearance of a "class consciousness" and therefore a subaltern narrative. "Chicha" is perhaps the genre that has most emphasized its pride in being proletariat, itinerant, provincial, and hardworking. Founded in Lima by Juan Campos Muñoz, a businessman, dreamer, and also a lover of music, Discos Horóscopo was a label company on the margins of the official Peruvian music industry. Learning the ins and outs of capitalism in the '80s was hard because it was the decade where the wildest neoliberal policies and the most extreme Maoist sendero luminosa revolt began simultaneously. On Juan Campos's end, it was the moment to initiate this new venture of Chicha music, which would allow Chicha to emerge symbolically (and then economically) to a new social class composed mostly of migrants, landless peasants, and proletarians without a factory. Between 1977 and 1987, the Discos Horóscopo label produced the largest wave of Andean tropical cumbia in the world; Chicha, a reference to the fermented alcoholic drink from the Andes. The label was filled with contemporary icons such as Chacalón y La Nueva Crema, Los Shapis, Pintura Roja, Los Ovnis, Grupo Alegría, and other cult groups. Together they created a unique style with the capacity to talk about both love and uprooting, unemployment, struggle of classes, internal violence and impossible loves. Features Chacalón y La Nueva Crema, Pintura Roja, Los Shapis, La Mermela'da, Grupo Halley, Los Ovnis, Grupo Maravilla, Los Orientales de Paramonga, Pepito Y Su Grupo Mazamorra, Los Destellos, Grupo Alegri'a, Los Ecos, and Grupo Celeste. VA Brown Acid - The Thirteenth Trip LP
LP version. "Here are just some of the gems from this latest edition of the popular compilation series featuring long-lost vintage '60s-70s proto-metal and stoner rock singles, Brown Acid - The Thirteenth Trip: Max, from Montreal, QC -- originally known as Dawn, before Tony Orlando & Dawn forced a name change -- kick things off with 'Run Run' from their lone 1970 single. It's a hard-hitting rocker with scale climbing crunching guitars and powerful Bonham-esque drumming. 'Feelin' Dead' is extremely heavy blues from this also extremely rare 1974 single by Detroit, MI's Master Danse, which was only released as a promo 45. Think Led Zeppelin's 'Since I've Been Loving You.' Gary Del Vecchio is 'Buzzin'' hard, and from what sounds like an in-studio party of yelps and chatter at the start of the song, it seems that the whole band was in on the festivities. The funky blues riff, reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's 'Heartbreaker' and rollicking rhythmic changes certainly keep the buzz a rollin'. Finally, Good Humore's swaggering 1976 rocker 'Detroit' is a slick and smooth paen to the Motor City. It most likely doesn't predate 'Detroit Rock City' by Kiss, also released in 1976, and it has more rock'n'roll swing, but it could fit comfortably alongside the era's arena anthems."

SORCERY Stunt Rock CD
"In the 1970s era of rock's theatrical excesses, Sorcery delivered next level performances in which a battle ensued on stage between illusionists portraying Merlin versus Satan. While Alice Cooper and KISS brought costumes, gore and flashpots to the mainstream, these Los Angeles hard rockers integrated live magic, theatrical drama and fourth wall breaking performance for new heights in musical storytelling. While Sorcery consists of professional musicians -- the core group being guitarist Richard (Smokey) Taylor, vocalist Greg Magie and bassist Richie King -- two magicians also performed on stage when they played live. The band's nearly immediate local popularity from their debut in 1975 also made them in demand for film and TV. Enter: Stunt Rock. Way before Jackass, before Crocodile Dundee, contemporaneous with Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park and as timeless as classic Heavy Metal, there was Stunt Rock. The 1978 low budget, high concept B-movie integrated hard rock, magic, dangerous stunts and an early form of mockumentary filmmaking into an epic feature film about an Australian stunt man reunited with his American cousin (and Sorcery member) in L.A., and all Hell breaks loose. Sorcery composed the soundtrack -- which also served as the band's debut album -- and were shown performing songs throughout the film. The Stunt Rock soundtrack highlights the sweet spot between the playful, campy occult imagery of the '70s before Satanic Panic and the religious right's kayfabe outrage pushed bands to tone things down in favor of glam pomp. What one gets here is pure, knobby occult heavy metal that sounds something like Sin After Sin-era Judas Priest with Robert Plant on vocals, crossed with the melodrama of Alice Cooper and The Who's rock operas. The songs are taut, quickly shifting from part to part, motif to overture. The tunes are infinitely catchy and laden with attention grabbing titles like 'Talking To The Devil', 'Mark of The Beast', 'Stuntrocker' and 'Burned Alive.' On the surface, the film Stunt Rock seems campy and crazy enough to be embraced even if the music weren't all that exciting, but Sorcery proves that their work deserves to be seriously appreciated in the canon of classic rock."

SOLIS LACUS Solis Lacus (A Special Radio - TV Record - N15) LP
Reissue of the Belgian milestone jazz album originally released in 1975. This is groundbreaking, experimental and funky jazz fusion. Sdban Records will reissue several installments of the legendary library series A Special Radio ~ TV Record on vinyl. These were originally released on Belgian imprint "Selection Records" between 1975 and 1981. N°15 in the series was the Belgian milestone jazz album Solis Lacus released in 1975. Solis Lacus is the cult group around renowned Belgian pianist Michel Herr, a pioneer of electric jazz in the '70s in Europe. Michel Herr rose to international prominence after winning the first prize at the jazz festival in Loosdrecht, The Netherlands, in 1971. He accompanied many European and American jazz stars on foreign tours and ran the group Jazztrack with saxophone player Wolfgang Engstfeld in Germany. At the same time, he set up his own band Solis Lacus, which consisted of Belgian musicians who had all made a name for themselves on the national jazz scene of the 1960s including Richard Rousselet and Bruno Castelluci both from Placebo. Inspired by the reigning jazz-rock sound of the day, Herr expanded his musical vocabulary and started to play electronic keyboards. Solis Lacus recorded its only album in the course of 1974 and 1975, before the members of the group headed in their own direction. Solis Lacus is considered the European counterpart to sound experimentations of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, or the best albums of the CTI label such as Freddie Hubbard.

GLASS MUSEUM Reflet CD
Belgian instrumentalists Glass Museum have found the perfect balance between piano and drums, where jazz and electronics collide, uniting the surgical precision of the best contemporary jazz, à la Gogo Penguin and Badbadnotgood, with the electronic influences of Jon Hopkins or Floating Points. In motion since 2016, the duo consisting of keyboardist Antoine Flipo and drummer Martin Grégoire, have a rich history written around a powerful connection to duality. From the initial impact of the Deux EP in 2018, to the synthetic and organic textures of the critically acclaimed 2020 album Reykjavik, Glass Museum has found its balance in symmetry. Released via the groove-obsessed Sdban Ultra label, Reflet was born out of a desire for freedom, a wish to innovate and travel differently. This new piece stands out as an artistic climax crafted at the crossroads of time and genres, an electronic proposition wrought by two brave hearts, tempered by the organic reflections delivered through computer free melodies. An album which places the human at the core of its compositions and in order to return to a more instinctive and instantaneous means of creation, the duo retreated to a secret location in one of the most remote parts of the Ardennes. It's there, in the shade of spruces, that the album was first born. Extremely cinematographic, Reflet delivers a panoramic view point: jazz, breakbeat, minimal techno, and deep house, collide on neo classical grounds. From the dynamic instrumentation of album opener "Caillebotis" to the absorbing oscillations of "Shiitake" and grand gestures of the album title track, Reflet is an odyssey running through troubled times, an ode to night time, to life, dreams and to all rhythms that convey emotions beyond words. Like its immersive creative process, the album offers a counterpoint and, above all, endless perspectives. Elsewhere, the pulsing, melodic "Auburn" and entrancing electronic textures of "Opal Sequences" continue the exploration before the strutting "Kendama" showcases the electronic sensibilities that are buried within their productions. Shining as a true instrumental tour de force, Reflet also takes inspiration from the progress of the Ohme Collective. At the crossroads of art disciplines, science, new technologies, and societal challenges, this creative community draws the future of visual arts and created the album artwork for this resolutely futuristic album.

He was a great soundtrack composer whose most active years were in the '80 and '90s when he worked at the Kyivnauchfilm studio, whose audio department was like the British BBC Radiophonic Workshop at the time. The soundtrack for the animated film Alice Through The Looking Glass was an attempt to create a psychedelic electroacoustic piece with a Victorian flavor. The film animation style is similar to Terry Gilliam's Monty Python cartoon clips. Gatefold sleeve; Obi; Edition of 300.

GONCHAROVA, VALENTINA Recordings Vol. 2 1987-1991 LP
Following the unpublished works of the Ukrainian/Estonian musician Valentina Goncharova, Volume 2 of Shukai's archival project sits in direct contrast to the solo works of Vol. 1. Vol. 2 1987-1991 completes Shukai's dive into the sound world of an important yet overlooked artist working within Soviet era electroacoustics. This long player of duets casts a light on Goncharova's experiences with early free jazz, democratic improvisation and introductions to pure electronic sound. Where Vol. 1 explored her home studio experiments and flirtations with musique concrete and new age, this volume seeks to give audience to similarly DIY recordings developed in collaborative environments away from the conservatoire. Properly documenting sessions revolving around smoky jazz cafes, art galleries, salons and theatre venues across Riga and Tallinn, these seven pieces add to the historical narrative of the Soviet-era avant-garde and show the broader spectrum of Valentina's work. It begins in Riga with an adapted score for a delicately unfolding violin drone, voice and saxophone performance produced by Valentina and Alexander Aksenov. Valetina's bond with the multi-instrumentalist and theater director Aksenov led to decades of close friendship and several demo recordings such as "Reincarnation II". Across the rest of the disc are collaborative duets with Sergei Letov and Pekka Airaksinan respectively, the three tapes with Letov an example of recordings as a "rehearsal process". Atypical violin/saxophone techniques and light, difficult to place percussive textures interplay across the three duets with Letov, the sense of spatiality alluding to the very nature of the recordings. They strike ultimately as private, freeform experiments with sound, never intended for the listener but documenting a practice which explores the dichotomy of improv's "non-professionalism" and its potential freedom from trained performance. They are included as a deliberate variance to the tapes with Pekka Airaksinen, an already well-regarded composer, early synthesizer fanatic and Finnish radical. At their time of meeting, Pekka had diverted his attention from punk-indebted noise and free jazz groups to a pursuit of spiritualism via contemporary electronic technologies. Already familiar with the Buddhas of Golden Light LP, Valentina found in his work an attraction to the sacred and, after an encounter at a 1988 Helsinki festival dedicated to futurist art and literature, she prepared to visit his studio. After a failed attempt to record a joint album, fragments of the tapes are presented here, highlighting Goncharova's first real experience of electronic music making in a compositional sense. Fragmented guitar and additional keyboard patterns push and pull through delay units in unison with Valentina's two violins, at times mimicking the howl of the wind or even the human voice.

CHAIN REACTION Indebted To You LP
Soulgramma present a reissue of Chain Reaction's Indebted To You, originally released in 1977. In 1975, singers Bruce Ruffin, Bobby Davis, and Dave Collins -- the latter of reggae duo Dave & Ansel Collins -- came together to form Chain Reaction, a short-lived UK harmony soul group who recorded their only album Indebted To You for Gull in 1977. This sought-after session includes their popular version of Lamont Dozier's "Why Can't We Be Lovers", the sweet soul single "Never Lose Never Win" and the non-album single "This Eternal Flame". Rare groove alert: The electric funk of "Hogtied" is the top of the crème here, with a bass line reminiscent of Aaron Neville's "Hercules", a sumptuous clavinet and a majestic wah-wah guitar. Fully licensed. 180 gram vinyl.

BEN, JORGE Samba Esquema Novo LP
Reissue. First released in 1963 on Phillips Records, this was Jorge Ben's debut album. Samba Esquema Novo ("New Style Samba") deliberately sets a new standard in Brazilian music. A beautiful, fresh and vital combination of Ben's percussive guitar and smooth/rough voice backed by big band style horns, percussion (the great Dom Um Romao), and strings. In 2007, it was listed by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history. But it's important to remind you that this is the album that contains the first original version of "Mas Que Nada", one of the most popular songs in the world. Clear vinyl.

WEBB, ROGER Bartleby: The Original Soundtrack Recording LP
2022 restock. "Before I go on about this, musically it is outstanding. Amazing. Groovy. Weird, Pastoral. Jazz. Funky. Modal. And all at the same time. So, some history and context for you. Bartleby or rather Bartleby The Scrivener: A Story Of Wall Street started life as a short anonymous work written for publication in 1853. Its first appearance was over two installments that year, in the November and December issues of Putnam's Monthly Magazine. The Bartleby story is simple -- a Wall Street firm hires a scrivener by the name of Bartleby, who, after joining, refuses to do any work at all, using 'I'd prefer not to' as his ongoing and effective excuse (a bit like my kids all the time in fact). This infuriates all the other staff and the situation spirals into madness. Bartleby appeared three years later as a short story in The Piazza Tales, revealing the writer to be Herman Melville. Since then, it has risen in stature, and has been firmly placed as a short form classic. It offers readers a subtle journey into mental illness and explores isolation in the work place and in society in general. It's not a particularly cheerful read, but Melville's subject matter and observations are more relevant now than ever. Over the years the story has been adapted for radio, stage and screen. In 1970 a filmed version was made in the UK, transporting Bartleby from New York to London, and from the 19th Century to the late 1960s. Starring Paul Scofield (as the accountant) and John McEnery (as Bartleby) it offered a stark, depressing and darkly comic view of office life, ending in a hunger strike and ultimately death. So not a swinging London movie by any stretch of the imagination. The film was shot around London Wall and was produced via Twickenham Studios (for interiors shots), which was a commercial set up co-owned by Kenneth Shipman. One of his fledgling composers at the time was pianist Roger Webb (1934-2002), who put together a most extraordinary and effective soundtrack. To my ears it's a mixture of jazz and British pastoral sadness. A perfect blend of late 1960s jazz underground and brooding depression. This is the first time this Bartleby score has ever been issued. It sounds incredible. In 35 years of collecting and listening to film music and library music, I have never come across anything quite like it before. If you have, can you let me know what it is. Unless of course, you prefer not to. Thanks for listening." --Jonny Trunk, 2021

LINARES, ALFREDO Mi Nuevo Ritmo LP
Vampisoul present a reissue of Alfredo Linares Y Su Salsa Star' Mi Nuevo Ritmo, originally released in 1974. A nonstop salsa dura party album from start to finish, comparable with any of New York's finest like Ray Barretto and Willie Colón from the same era, but with its own unique swinging sound and bright, crisp, joyful vibe. There are plenty of straight up Cuban-roots based salsa tunes, plus some Latin jazz and Latin soul and a bolero. Trumpets, hand claps, loud cowbell, and vigorous vocals all make for a great listen and an even better dance experience. As the track "La Música Brava" proclaims: "Yo no quiero que pare la música brava!" (I don't want the badass music to stop!). The record is actually a patchwork of different recording sessions made in Peru and Colombia, featuring differing studio sound and musician lineups. Linares had just returned to his adopted home of Medellín from a period spent in Peru and was looking for a record deal. He had brought master tapes with four songs recorded in Lima and was shopping them around in the hopes of securing an album contract. Linares also cut some Colombian sessions which feature Roy "Tayrona" Betancourt as well as Henry Castro and Enrique Fabián. Unfortunately, neither Discos Fuentes nor Sonolux or Codiscos were interested. At that time, vinyl for making records was scarce and over-priced due to the petroleum crisis and hence the labels were reluctant to try out a new artist. "There was nothing to be done. The only company that had vinyl stock was INS. So, I did the business with them even though they didn't have a known name in Colombia. The strength of that album made them rather famous." The song "Mambo Rock" (with "Estricto Guaguancó" on the B side) came out on a 45rpm record in 1974, and, as Linares recounts it, "two months later the sale was at a very high level. So, partly out of gratitude, I started producing for them. It is from there that my other records and the AfroINS albums came." Unfortunately, the master tapes to the LP were lost or destroyed, as with all INS releases, so the best possible vinyl sources and audio restoration has been used for this deluxe reissue. Recommended by DJ Bongohead of Peace & Rhythm. Presented in its original artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

MEIRELLES, HELENA A Rainha da Viola Caipira 2LP
2022 restock. It's about time to uncover the most unknown Brazilian music style. Unlike other Brazilian musical traditions as samba and bossa-nova, never ever anything of Caipira music has been released outside Brazil. Repairing this huge gap, Vampisoul presents A Rainha da Viola Caipira, a stunning 25-track compilation of the revered "Queen Of The Viola Caipira", Helena Meirelles. To start with, what is a viola? It looks like an acoustic guitar but is not. It has nearly the same shape but it is slightly smaller. Instead of the six or twelve strings, it has ten strings, paired in duplets of five strings. It has a very distinctive sound, having an enhanced treble, and a sharper reverb. The sound must be played with a hard pick because its original steel strings are thicker than the ordinary ones. The viola is the main symbol of música caipira or, may we call it, caipira sound. Caipira music cannot easily be portrayed as country music or, directly, encapsulated in folk patterns, even though it contains ingredients from both of them. On top of that, it also bears an influence of guarânia (a Paraguayan slow polka played in minor scales) and corrido and ranchera (specific variations of the Mexican folklore). There's also a shadow of Mexican mariachi-style. Everything on Helena's life or art was exquisite and unique to say the least. Mother of 11 sons, estranged from all of them for 30 years, mid-wife by trade and a very late musician to debut in public (she was 68 years old when she started to record her debut album), she was born on the August 13th, 1924, and passed away in 2004. Considered by the Guitar Player Magazine, one the 100 greatest guitar players of all time, don't miss the chance to discover a brand-new kind of (Brazilian) folk music.

MCKECHNIE, DOUG San Francisco Moog: 1968-72 Vol. 1 LP
"San Francisco Moog: 1968-72 documents a missing link in the history of electronic music, as well as the little-known moment when psychedelic music went electronic. In 1968, Bay Area native Doug McKechnie got hold of one the very first modular Moog synthesizers ever made and began finding his own way to play it. Soon, he was hauling the finicky instrument around to perform improvised concerts at colleges and ballrooms, as well as an ill-fated appearance on the bill at Altamont. Many of the performances were recorded, and the surviving tapes -- never before released -- capture a free-flowing, transportive sound that fills in the gap between the austere mid-century academic avant-garde and the expansive cosmic suites of Tangerine Dream and the rest of the Berlin School in the '70s. This is not another corny old Moog record. San Francisco Moog sounds as fresh as anything by today's analog-synth heads while bringing to life a lost moment in the development of the music." "Astonishing stuff, pure early Moog electronics . . . vibrating with the joy taken in the discovery of the new sounds this machine was capable of." --Electronic Sound "Presages both Tangerine Dream's soundtracks and, in its most grimy moments, 'Acid Tracks'." --The Wire

YANO, AKIKO Gohan Ga Dekitayo 2LP
2022 restock; double LP version. Wewantsounds present a 40th anniversary reissue of Akiko Yano's Gohan Ga Dekitayo, originally released in 1980. This superb double-album was recorded with Yellow Magic Orchestra at a time when she was part of the group's touring line-up between 1979 and 1980. The album is pure Akiko Yano featuring her superb singing and piano playing, enhanced by touches of YMO's synth-pop sound (check her cult version of YMO's classic, "Tong-Poo"). First album release outside of Japan. When Gohan Ga Dekitayo came out in 1980, Akiko Yano had been touring with Yellow Magic Orchestra for more than a year. She'd play keyboards alongside the three founding members -- Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahashi -- plus guitarist Kenji Omura and synth wizard programmer Hideki Matsutake (as part of the 1980 North American tour, she'd also feature in the group's cult TV appearance on Soul Train for a memorable rendition of "Tighten Up") and they are all present on Gohan Ga Dekitayo. The double-LP, whose title could be translated by "Dinner Is Ready", was co-produced with Ryuichi Sakamoto and recorded at two legendary studios: Tokyo's Alfa Studio "A" and Los Angeles's Sound City. It was Akiko's first shift towards a fuller synth sound following four studio albums mixing pop and jazz funk, including her landmark debut from 1976, Japanese Girl (WWSCD 017CD/WWSLP 017LP). A shift that would continue with the release of Tadaima in 1981 (WWSCD 016CD/WWSLP 016LP_, also featuring the YMO musicians. The fourteen tracks on Gohan Ga Dekitayo find Akiko in top form mixing her singer-songwriter's sensitivity with the electro-pop sound of YMO. It's interesting to note though that it is very much an Akiko Yano album even if the group is present on the album (interestingly they do also play analog instruments on the album). Akiko is clearly the one in charge with a string of beautiful compositions and the rendition of one of the group's classics, "Tong Poo" which she reinvents as a slower, less metronomic-paced song adding her own lyrics. Other highlights on the album include "Dogs Awaiting...", a hypnotic composition featuring fascinating electro arrangements or "Coloured Water" sung in English by Akiko accompanying herself on Fender Rhodes with subtle percussion by Tatsuo Hayashi and electronics by Ryuichi Sakamoto. There are many more great moments on this superb album which announces the further experiments of Tadaima. Remastered audio by Mitsuo Koike.

SAKAMOTO, RYUICHI Hidari Ude No Yume LP
Restocked; single LP version. Obi strip; four-page insert. Wewantsounds present the reissue of Ryuichi Sakamoto's third solo album Hidari Ude No Yume (Left Handed Dream), originally released in 1981 on the Alfa label. Save for a small-scale Dutch vinyl release in 1981, it is the first time the album's original Japanese edition is released outside of Japan (the European release on Epic Records included significantly different tracks and mixes). Hidari Ude No Yume was recorded at the legendary Alfa Studio "A" in Tokyo during the Summer of 1981. it came after B-2 Unit in 1980 and his debut album Thousand Knives Of... in 1978 (WWSCD 024CD/WWSLP 024LP), the very year Sakamoto was invited by Haruomi Hosono to join Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Yukihiro Takahashi. In 1981, Sakamoto decided to record an album rooted in pop, following the more experimental B-2 Unit and his landmark electro debut. Sakamoto invited British producer Robin Scott to co-produce. They entered the Alfa studio in July 1981 with his fellow YMO musicians Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, keyboard programmer extraordinaire Hideki Matsutake who'd been on Sakamoto's first two albums and became YMO's unofficial fourth member, violinist Kaoru Sato, saxophonist Satoshi Nakamura, and American guitarist Adrian Belew (David Bowie, The Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club). Together, they created a fascinating mix of pop, ambient and electronic music with elements of avant-garde and traditional Japanese music, the whole firmly rooted in a solid groove. From the funk of "Relâché" to the new wave feel of "Venezia" and the ambient minimalism of "Slat Dance," the album is remarkably consistent while displaying a wealth of global influences. The album was released in Japan in 1981 and Epic Records picked it up for Europe a year later but decided to release it in a significantly altered version. The sequencing was completely reshuffled and two tracks, "Saru No Ie" and "Living In The Dark" were completely dropped while three others, "Relâché", "Tell 'em To Me", "Venezia" were heavily remodeled with English lyrics and different names. Last but not least, a new English-sung track, "The Arrangement," was added, making the album nine tracks instead of ten for the Japanese edition. Newly remastered from the original tapes by renowned engineer Bernie Grundman. Comes with original artwork featuring cover shot by famous photographer Masayoshi Sukita. Four-page insert with new introduction by journalist Anton Spice.
