Alim Qasimov The Art of the Mugham cd

Alim Qasimov The Art of the Mugham cd

cd 2001/1996 new The high, rapturous wail in Qasimov's voice sways back & forth, supple & always changing. Sounds like he's on the verge of fainting every instant. Virtuoso of the complex mugham (the Azerbaijani answer to the Turkish maqam), he's accompanied by Persian guitar/tar & kamancha (Persian violin). Even though he's the most famous living musician, there at the crossroads between eastern europe & the middle east, Qasimov still teaches at Asef Zeynali Music High School when he's not on tour.

Anima Sound Strumischer Himmel cd

Anima Sound Strumischer Himmel cd

cd 1998/1971 M-/M- Paul & Limpe Fuchs were just a nice German dirty hippie couple with some toddlers running around, except that instead of joining the PTA or starting a garden, they decided to drive a tractor around Europe one summer, pulling a gypsy wagon & stopping every now & again to plonk on tympani drums, blow a homemade flugelhorn, & yowl like skinned cats. Paul made the horns, Limpe made the kids & played the drums. She now says tellingingly, "the tour showed us that we were more exotic that we ever thought". A NWW list underground classic.
Spalax $12.00

Bruce Haack Captain Entropy cd

Bruce Haack Captain Entropy cd

cd 2005/1974 new Later record of electronics and peyote-flavored semi-scientific philosophies. Haack had been on Mr Rogers, made jingles for Kraft Cheese, blown the minds of countless kids, pioneered the vocoder, built innumerable unique instruments & wasn't done yet. He wasn't having an easy time in the early 70s however, living in Ted Pandel's basement (who was married to a woman who didn't like Haack & reputedly once threw him down a flight of stairs). Optigon, sweetly peeping tones, homemade drum machines. All the while, Haack whispers bizarre instructions that implore you to move your body like a coffeepot or an ice cube, or describe disgusting furry animals that lay eggs.

Chris Corsano The Young Cricketer lp

Chris Corsano The Young Cricketer lp

lp 2008/2006 new Sounds like 5 guys play on this record, but it's all just king hell Corsano roving at breakneck fucking speed. Sax mouthpieces with tubing, pot lids, lamps, scotch tape, butter knives, a ball on a stick, and even some drums.
Family Vineyard $12.00

Edmond De Deyster Selectie 01 lp

Edmond De Deyster Selectie 01 lp

lp 2006/1975 new Reel to reel tapes of private solo synth tiddlywinks that were unknown to exist until De Deyster died & his Belgian family found em in a dusty cardboard box. Clean & cool sweeps & flurries of chilly sine tones. Mostly slow moving so you can sink your teeth into each & every squirt.

Franco Micalizzi Lo Chiamavano Trinia lp

Franco Micalizzi Lo Chiamavano Trinia lp

lp 2014/1970 new Ennio Morricone wannabe Micalizzi assembled many of the studio musicians who had crafted the sound of spaghetti westerns in the couple of years before this movie was made: Franco de Gemini on harmonica, Alessandro Alessandroni with a boatload of whistling, etc. Overenunciating Australian-Italian singer Annibale Giannarelli gives the vocals his best Tom Jones treatment. Micalizzi is not interested in puzzle-piece arrangements, but he does know the value of a roaring string section, a banjo solo & a bouncy melody, so it all hangs together well. The movie, similarly, reduces the dark pathos of a Leone film to a quick comedy that encourages you to be nice to Mexicans & lay all the girls you can. However, it does feature the icy blues of Terence Hill. And while this was not the first pairing of Hill with Bud Spencer (that crown goes to 'God Forgives... I Don't'), it is the first & best of their many, many stoner-buddy comedies. Micalizzi also went on to make loads of vigilante cop movies directed by Umberto Lenzi. 5 bonus tracks.

Ghedalia Tazartes Repas Froid lp

Ghedalia Tazartes Repas Froid lp

lp 2011/2009 new Tazartes dips into his collected arsenal of loops and field recordings and collages them into a seeping fog. Breaking wood, jerking circus music, haunting organ riffs, and crap keyboards that churn out a rhythm as old as the sand dunes. As is his wont, there's also lots of voices: dracula groans, german arguments, faux arabic ululating, kids imitating birds, etc.
Pan $25.00

Golden Ring Iranian Styled 60s Garage & Other Exotic Sounds lp

Golden Ring Iranian Styled 60s Garage & Other Exotic Sounds lp

lp 2009/196x new Before the Islamic Revolution of the late 70s, Tehran was a burgeoning cosmopolitan city that didn't shy from Western influence. So just like everywhere else, the newly minted middle class had a need for music that was hip, young & forward looking. Something a little different than the traditional Iranian classical music on the radio. And that meant that kids started imitating the Beatles & the Shadows using a Persian scale. Next to Googoosh, Aref Arefkia was the most popular singer in Tehran during the 60s & 70s (he was voted so, along with her, in the Iranian answer to 'Tiger Beat' for 7 years in a row). Here's his first band's complete singles (one of which you might remember from 'Raks Raks Raks'). Accordion, tar, electric guitar & organ all wobble together in a beguiling, reedy 6/8.
Persianna $26.00

Gunter Schickert Samtvogel lp

Gunter Schickert Samtvogel lp

lp 2010/1974 new Guitar that drips along in blobs of sticky, congealed delay over taut kraut tick-tocks. Opening track has some downer whispering vocals, but the rest is just Gunter's pulsing space probes. His first & best album, which he pressed himself & then let Brain reissue. Title has nothing to do with a guy named Sam, & instead means 'including bird'.
Wah Wah $26.00

Gustavo Cesar Carrion El Vampiro/El Ataud del Vampiro lp

Gustavo Cesar Carrion El Vampiro/El Ataud del Vampiro lp

lp 2010/1957 new K. Gordon Murray produced this pair of Mexican drac flicks, known as the first cinematic appearance of vampire fangs. Directed by Fernando Mendez & an inspiration to Hammer's Christopher Lee pictures, they're full of brooding woods, decaying buildings & tons of fog. Gustavo did the scores for plenty of horror & Santo movies, often using abominable amounts of organ. Here you get entrancing harps, ladies singing from faraway dungeons, brass that makes footsteps heavier, bits of Spanish diaglogue, shivering strings, and enough descending piano figures to take you down a whole flight of big stone stairs.

Harold Budd Perhaps lp

Harold Budd Perhaps lp

lp 2013/2006 new Slow, pedal-painted piano chords that ease & waft their way in & out of reassuring harmonic territory. Improvised for a James Tenney memorial just a few years ago, and the situation seems to've brought out the best in Budd, who had declared himself retired around 2004.
Root Strata $22.00

Il Balletto di Bronzo Sirio 2222 lp

Il Balletto di Bronzo Sirio 2222 lp

lp 2014/1970 new Naples hard psych that's more obscure than it deserves to be. Band would shortly turn prog, but here they're still into gnarlyass riff slinging, complete with big mean drum fills & slippery solos, plus a stray downtime moment with cello & violin. Best known for their ill-fitting (but great) song tacked onto the end of the soundtrack to the Mario Bava film '5 Bambole per La Luna D'Agosto', the rest of which is sexpot lounge by Piero Umiliani.
Lion $22.00

Jack Smith Les Evening Gowns Damnees cd

Jack Smith Les Evening Gowns Damnees cd

cd 1997/1962-64 M-/M- Smith was a whimsical outsider filmmaker & performance artist, who went a long way toward inventing what would now be a very happy flaming drag queen. He generally hung around his apartment, living high and free and telling Errol Flynn style adventure stories that didn't make any sense unless you lathered on more lipstick. He created an entire fantasy stable of femme fatale stars throughout the late 60s & early 70s, paid homage to some completely real ones, made zero-budget films & did a lot of unnecessary decorating. Ah the days when lazy layabouts and freaks were this creative. Tony Conrad, John Cale, Angus MacLise all guest.
Table of the Elements $10.00

Jake Meginsky L'appel du Vide lp

Jake Meginsky L'appel du Vide lp

lp 2014 new Airless digital pulses, bumps, crackles & throbs that whiz by in elliptical patterns. Meginsky is from Western Mass & was the drummer in X04, so he's very interested in subtle tempo changes that constantly keep you unsettled. A lesser musician would have ended up with a dance record here, but Meginsky's blippings have frequencies so low they sound like holes and just enough slippage to mimic arrhythmia.
Open Mouth $17.50

Kathy & Carol cd

Kathy & Carol cd

cd 2004/1964 new Snowstorm pure vocal harmonies accompanied by bare acoustic guitar & autoharp. A decidedly UK urge for simplicity & nary a touch of strident righteousness gives these 20 year olds a sound older than oaks and innocent as green grass. Just my funny ideas of course, but I think this one record is worth more ear time than the entire Dylan & Fred Neil catalogs combined.
Collector's Choice $12.00

Love Machine/Rajput & the Sepoy Mutiny cd

Love Machine/Rajput & the Sepoy Mutiny cd

cd 2012/1967-68 new Two logic-defying exploito hippie albums in one, both of which came out on the budget imprints of the already shady Pickwick label. The first takes it's art direction from the Yellow Submarine animation & has someone banging hard on a reverb unit at random, over pretty decent hammond vamps. The 2nd is well known for it's mangled cover of the 5th Dimension's 'Up Up & Away'. What sounds like a piano-driven country band tinkles jaggedly while a sitar-player hacks out spectacularly tuneless melodies over the top. You simply haven't experienced the music of the 1960s without these head-crackers.
Gear Fab $12.50

Michael Farneti Good Morning Kisses lp

Michael Farneti Good Morning Kisses lp

lp 2011/1976 new YOU BETTER TURN YOUR ESP SWITCH ON! Private press legend & South Florida's best Jim Morrisson impersonator Farneti clearly wants to write cloying & sensitive radio ballads a la Christopher Cross or Bruce Hornsby. Yet armed only with the power of his lobotomizing lyricism (and aided by boundless mid-song key changes & half-pro studio musicians), he manages instead to hit upon the genuine sweetness & forlorn heartache of Rodd Keith at his best. I would wager that Farneti took a couple songwriting classes for extra credit while attending a Barbizon modeling school, but you can make up your own backstory while you discuss with friends: Is there a jailbait/molestor subtext suffused throughout the album, or did Farneti just listen to a little too much Lovin' Spoonful? Either way, this is one reish I've been breathlessly awaiting.
Companion $30.00

Mike Curb Mary Jane lp

Mike Curb Mary Jane lp

lp 2011/1968 new LA pop soundtrack with fuzz, bongos, & cute throwaway songs by wonderful whitey counterculture-traitor Curb. Mrs Miller guests on one song. A high school art teacher is framed for using pot when he's only trying to help his students experiment without going wrong. Fabian, Joe E. Ross, & Patty McCormack ('The Bad Seed') are all in the movie.
Reel Time $21.50

Musiche de Teisco lp

Musiche de Teisco lp

lp 2013/1979-82 new Library music is, by definition, music made by & for corporations. It has no artist & the entire goal is to be vague, buttery & forgettable. So it's already a bit wrong when it has any distinct personality. Unheard of that a self-taught musician would make it at home. And then get his mom to release it? Overview of earlyish stuff by self-starter & gentle psycho Marco Melchiori (aka Rimauri & Teisco). Slightly sloshing guitar vamps, shimmery synths, a shifting minor key harmonic undertow that'll make you uneasy, and also blitz moves like 4-tracked vocoder. Not only does no one anywhere put things together quite like this guy, it's incomprehensible why it was released. Who'd EVER want to use this to break sports scores or sell breath mints? What is the shit with the bad pseudonyms? And what about Melchiori's mysterious, warlock-hat-wearing bedroom rock band 'The Smogs'? Who buys a 14 year old boy 5 guitars, lets him put colored electrical tape all over them, and then bans metronomes from the vicinity? Was this guy so incredibly wealthy & also so socially maladjusted that he was just left to wander alone in an aesthetic alt-universe? It's really too bad that Phillip K Dick was so damned deaf (he liked Linda Ronstadt), because if the narrator of 'Valis' made a record, I'd want it to come out like this one.
Dual Planet $27.00

Plastic Cloud cd

Plastic Cloud cd

cd 2013/1968 new Probably the best band from Canada ever & a real perennial that you need to have around at all times. Basically the band's in the Electric Prunes mold, but sporting priceless fuzz solos that brapp around all over the place- right through verses, choruses, etc. All original songs & perfectly written slightly surreal, Beatle-cheek lyrics about war machines, smoking cows, fuddy old men. Those dark & velvet soft harmony vocals are really killer too. My personal lifetime in-shower singalong hitlist always has 'Art's a Happy Man' in the top ten.
Lion $15.00

Plastic People of the Universe Magical Nights 3lp

Plastic People of the Universe Magical Nights 3lp

3lp 2010/1969-85 new Pissed off Prague prog (go on, say it fast 5 times) with a bit of Fugs freedom by some unwashed guys with violas, saxes, & a stuttering, dead rigid rock rhythm section. At first their lyrics were written by Egon Bondy, & therefore were translated into English by Canadian frontman Paul Wilson. Various members were arrested, deported, or forced to emigrate to Austria for the obvious crimes of associating with hippies, inciting freakouts, putting cow pictures on record covers, etc. But the real story here is the dark funkiness of their best songs, and those weird theremin-like noises they got in their middle years from being forced to build their own equipment in people's kitchens. A good overview that leaves off the dregs & gives you the best.
Munster $33.50

Saicos cd

Saicos cd

cd 2006/1965-66 new Explosively hard & raw garage from Peru. Flames will burst from your stereo speakers when singer Erwin Flores growls like a goddamned cougar in heat. These cavemen who lived in our midst scared the holy crap out of every teenager in Lima. 2 bonus tracks & a slew of single picture sleeve photos.
Repsychled $16.50

Sandhy & Mandhy Para Castukis lp

Sandhy & Mandhy Para Castukis lp

lp 2008/1969 new Yummy organ-driven melancholy psych with Zombies-type harmony vocals, gorgeous bits of bossa. Members of a couple of local teen bands in Argentina (Los Free Men, La Maquina de Musica) hit up Billy Bond to try & get a record deal. He said that he had enough bands, but could use a folk duo. They promptly became a fake one & pressed 110 copies of a demo with no cover. Upon giving one to Billy, he said it sounded too much like a band with a duo name. When the band gigged around Buenos Aires, they had to carry their Farfisa to & from rehearsals by walking it down the street, and had to take instruments to shows on the subway, because nobody in the band could afford a car.
Lion $26.00

Smoke cd

Smoke cd

cd 2010/1968 new A glorious crossroads of all things LA. In 1964, Kim Fowley (who was already a primo hustler) saw a 13 year old kid play in a shitty garage band at a party. The kid seemed talented & brash, & so Fowley signed him to a publishing deal & got a single issued (by The Rogues). The kid, Michael Lloyd, ended up being the most talented member of the (Fowley midwifed) West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, & helped produce St. John Green. Mike Curb ('You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda', Davie Allan soundtracks) got interested, & gave Lloyd a bunch of free studio time, & so out came this album of pillow-fluffy softpop. Lloyd went on to become Curb's right hand man at MGM by age 20. Stan Ayeroff played guitar, helped out with the writing, and would later go on (after college) to be in Oingo Boingo. Album is known for it's awful sound, & that hasn't changed much over the years, but you can't hide the wonderous harpsichords, pumping organs, or blissed out choral harmonies that're all over the thing.
Kismet $16.00

Stelvio Cipriani Femina Ridens lp

Stelvio Cipriani Femina Ridens lp

lp 2009/1969 new Those of you who visit Weirdo in person probably know that I listen to this yummy Cipriani soundtrack way, way too often. Can't get enough. Impossibly jazzy organ, off-kilter heavy breathing & femme singing by Edda Dell'Orso, spy brass, crippling bass grooves. Arrangements are decorated with touches of harp, circus-themes on harpsichord, & a few lines stolen from Bach. Cipriani didn't come from a musical family, but was encouraged as a kid and worked his way into a job as a pianist on a cruise ship. He eventually landed a job working for Rita Pavone, & turned it into a few spaghetti western scores, before scoring an Italian answer to 'Love Story' called 'The Anonymous Venetian'. The movie here is a surprisngly complex sex-exploitation flick about a financier who gets his secretary to come to a castle for a weekend & turns out to be a sadist. But the joke's on him when the victim mistress turns out to be the master of all men.

Various Bachata Roja cd

Various Bachata Roja cd

cd 2007/1962-84 new Dazzling & skittering acoustic guitar diamonds that were party songs in the cardboard box shantytowns created during the 12 year Balaguer presidency in Santo Domingo. Instruments made from fence parts, played in bars so crappy that the patrons all shared the same glass. My favorite track is a merengue by Augustus Santos about being careful, while you're drunk and leaving the club, that you don't trip over the whores on the front steps.
Iaso $15.00

Various Dim Dam Dingue lp

Various Dim Dam Dingue lp

lp 2008/1967-70 M-M- Tasty collection of seriously rare French freakbeat which gives lie to the common idea that the Paris scene wasn't as as hip-poppin' groovy as Rome's or London's. Hot organ swirlers, wig-flipping hard shake, plus a bit of sexy blase whenever somebody's trying to rip off Gainsbourg. Every track is both unknown and good enough to make your pals drool when you whip it on 'em.

Various Ghana Special 2cd

Various Ghana Special 2cd

cd 2009/1968-81 new Having spent 10 years researching the musicians of Ghana, Miles Cleret decided that his two volumes of 'Ghana Soundz' weren't enough to give a true overview of the country's recording industry throughout the 70s. Besides a lot of hotfoot funk inspired by the JBs, there were big band stars getting down with sailor songs played on acoustic guitars, singers who dressed up in Chinese shirts, nightclubs with zoos inside, bands with fire eaters & snake charmers. Can you blame him for wanting everybody to hear more?
Soundway $22.00

Various Historische Aufnahmen lp

Various Historische Aufnahmen lp

lp 2011/1934-03 new Felix Kubin masquerades as a German electronica musician, twitching onstage to skittery bass pulses, covering Len Barry/Klaus Nomi, etc. But underneath the long series of thin ties and angular haircuts lies something far more interesting- a record collector. Part anthropologist, part manifesto writer, part DJ, Kubin digs deep and reveals this fabulous jewlery chest of ridiculous curiosities. Antique automatons that could mimic speech, a possible ghost in a phone line, ethnomusicology projects, a con man's proposal for grant funding to build a fictitious factory, unreleased avant classical electronics, underwater radar bouncing off sea plankton, a drummer who conducted & coaxed songs from a bevy of live animals, Joseph Goebbels giving a proto-synth demonstration (stop. Go back & read that last one again. No joke), futurist poets getting Russian soldiers to make mouth noises, French situationists discussing how to build a subversive kindergarten, player piano rolls churning out a composition based on the rings of a birch tree.

Various Musique Concrete Soundtracks Vols 1-6 6x3 inch

6x3 inch 2002/1956-78 M-/M- A mystery man who lives around Boston made a special trip to Australia and visited a film preservation center. For no known reson, the folks who ran the center left our hero alone with a digital studio and tons of rare films for an entire day. Voila, here's a rather nice mini-history of 20th century avant garde music in miniature. originally issued as separate volumes, but here's all 6 at once.

Various Ouled Bambara cd + dvd

Various Ouled Bambara cd + dvd

cd + dvd 2009/2005 new The low, steady bounce of the 3 stringed gimbri (which looks like a lambskin version of Bo Diddley's guitar) and a ton of castanets are all you need to invoke the most dangerous ghosts in Morocco. Some of the more famous Gnawa musicians (including the guy who played with Led Zeppelin) are here, but they sound like they're winding down a house party in the middle of the night. Dvd is 35 minutes, and all region.
Drag City $17.00

Various Paradise Bangkok lp

Various Paradise Bangkok lp

lp 2014/197x new Maft Sai has been busy the last couple of years releasing 7 inches and putting together a touring band out of his Bangkok record shop. Here's a best of recent releases, plus a couple of tunes that haven't been out at all. Leggy ladies in matching thigh-high white boots sing drunken, clanky molam. Tough Thai funk with chunky horn arrangements that backing ensembles can just about get through without screwing up. And most beloved of all, the 'Thai Dai' Thai guy Santi, who's best known in the west for his awesome version of 'Iron Man', & used to burn his leather jacket onstage while singing about high gasoline prices. From luk thung with electric instruments to folky tooting khaens, there's a huge variety here, but each song has it's peculiar snap. Comes with a very silly comic book.

Various Seven Skeletons Found in the Yard lp

Various Seven Skeletons Found in the Yard lp

lp 2014/1928-47 new Jumble up Yoruba chanting, Spanish balladry, dixieland clarinets and rap battles, and you've got Trinidad's homegrown jazz. English lyrics were seen as a sign of sophistication, so it was often important for calypso singers to use the longest, oddest words they knew to take the piss out of their friends and decry shallow behavior wherever they saw it. And the style didn't really stiffen up until after WWII, so you get instrumentals, piano pieces, some Creole, & bands that're squeaky as a rusty gate amid all the jumping bean melodies. Lionel Belasco gave piano lessons to the mayor's daughter, & his musical roots stretch back to the 1800s, whereas Luis Daniel Quintana only put out a few 78s in nearby Venezuela.

Various Shbahoth: Iraqi Jewish Song From the 1920s cd

cd 2004/192x new Ancient tongue poetry ululations & forlorn yawps to the heavens that were written to accompany Qabalah acrostics. But you also get a sloppy brass band & some pretty natty cimbalom players. Selim Daoud is the cover star of the recent 'Give Me Love' compilation.

Various The World Is a Monster cd

Various The World Is a Monster cd

cd 2010/1948-58 new Country & western is an unsightly pairing dreamed up at Billboard which matched yearning appalachian folk with the hard-driving, stompin' hillybilly music from everywhere west of the Mississip. Movies often promoted the western half, which was slick, fast, fun, well recorded, lavishly orchestrated, and popped as hot as any R&B or jazz combo. Before the rise of Nashville in the mid-50s, there were packs of musicians running around Los Angeles & Dallas with lit matches in their toes. Here's a slew, all issued by Columbia. You can hear the instant & huge influence of Hank Williams as soon as the 50s arrive, and several productions zing mighty close to rockabilly or even surf.
