8MM MUSIK (GERMANY)

8MM 010CD

BLUE ANGEL LOUNGE, THE: The Blue Angel Lounge CD (8MM 010CD) 12.50
2011 release. The release of The Blue Angel Lounge is special in two ways -- it is the 10th release on 8MM Musik and also it is the first German band signed by the label. The band was introduced to 8MM Musik by the former Spacemen 3 bass player Will Carruthers. The label was impressed by the very unique and adult sound of the very young band (22-24 years old) from Hagen. The band is a reference to The Velvet Underground, and the influence on their sound can be clearly identified. However, unlike many other bands who try to sound like VU, The Blue Angel manage to sound fresh, authentic and distinct. It is their youthful lightness that allows them to mix the sound of the late '60s with '90s shoegaze and today's neo-shoegaze. Other influences include My Bloody Valentine, Spiritualized, Galaxie 500, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Singapore Sling, The December Sound, The Warlocks, etc.

8MM 011CD

BLUE ANGEL LOUNGE, THE: Narcotica CD (8MM 011CD) 12.50
While staying true to their Nico and Velvet Underground- inspired colors, broader timeless inspiration of new wave, post-punk, and shoegaze are accentuated throughout Blue Angel Lounge's release, Narcotica. The band present a strong balance between relatively up-tempo songs such as "Caught Crow" or "Delete My Ideals" and the atmospheric and psychedelic in tracks "I Will Never" and 'Son of the Ocean." Narcotica was self-produced with the assistance of Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre). Mr. Newcombe can be heard singing backing vocals on "Delete My Ideals."

A RECORDINGS (UK)

AUK 001CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Bringing It All Back Home Again CD (AUK 001CD) 9.00
2013 release. Originally released in 1999 and now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) own record label. On this six-song, half-hour CD, the band's affecting a more rural, lonesome-sounding tone and a moodier, more deliberate pace; the more traditional feel meshes well with Anton Newcombe's twisting of country-gospel lyrical clichés into rock & roll attitude. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many L.A. and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase -- the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegazing genre of the 1990s, and incorporates influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

AUK 003CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Bravery, Repetition And Noise CD (AUK 003CD) 12.00
2007 release. Originally released in 2001. Bravery, Repetition and Noise is a dark, dreamy album, rich in atmosphere, layered in waves of sound. The album's antecedents are clear, inspired by psychedelia as they were by punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since. Brian Jonestown Massacre uses this as their touchstone, lovingly re-creating the moods and atmospheres of the past.

AUK 004CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request CD (AUK 004CD) 12.00
2007 release. Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Their Satanic Majesties Second Request 2LP (AUK 004LP) 25.50
Gatefold 180 gram double vinyl version. AUK 005CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Take It from the Man! CD (AUK 005CD) 12.00
2007 release. Originally released in 1996 now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's own record label. The Brian Jonestown Massacre's obsession with the Rolling Stones continues unabated on the brilliant Take It from the Man!; where the group resurrected psychedelic-era excesses on the previous Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, here they jump further back in time to the Stones' mid-'60s period, with even more superlative results. From the opening "Vacuum Boots" onward, Take It from the Man! is gritty, swaggering R&B-influenced rock, delivered with remarkable assurance and attitude; singer Anton Newcombe is half-madman and half-shaman, and he commands each delirious moment with absolute mastery, emerging not so much a disciple of Mick Jagger but as a serious threat to the throne.

AUK 006CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Give It Back! CD (AUK 006CD) 12.00
2007 release. Originally released in 1997, now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's own record label, with new artwork. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. Give It Back! was the band's fifth studio album in two years. Notably, this is the only album that features Peter Hayes, who went on to found the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

AUK 006LP

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Give It Back! 2LP (AUK 006LP) 25.50
2013 release. This is the first time this release has been available on vinyl, remastered for this vinyl release. This 1997 album is seen as a classic Brian Jonestown Massacre release. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT, Tee Pee, and now on Anton Newcombe's own A Recordings label. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many L.A. and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. AUK 007CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Thank God for Mental Illness CD (AUK 007CD) 12.00
2007 release. Originally released in 1996 now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's own record label. At the risk of further belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music in 1996, The Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of The Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning -- rarely are bands quite so productive, or quite so consistently amazing. Thank God... is the BJM's down-and-dirty country-blues outing, all 13-odd tracks supposedly recorded on a single July day at a cost of just $17.36.

AUK 008CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Methodrone CD (AUK 008CD) 12.00
2007 release. Originally released in 1995. Redolent with the spirit of such high priests of effects and delay as Loop, Spaceman 3, and My Bloody Valentine, not to mention a fair dollop of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Methodrone clearly is the sum of its influences. Thankfully, BJM does a very solid job with them throughout the album's course of over 70 minutes.

AUK 008LP

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Methodrone 2LP (AUK 008LP) 25.50

The band has re-released it on CD with six bonus demo tracks attached. With The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is one of the subjects of the documentary DIG!, winner of the 2004 Grand Jury Prize Documentary at Sundance. DIG! is also a part of the Permanent Collection of the NY Museum of Modern Art. Since the release of DIG!, the band has achieved increasing critical acclaim and recognition, and has performed at Coachella and Lollapalooza in 2005 with special mentions from The New York Times and The Washington Post. They have also toured the UK, Japan, and Australia, as well as Continental Europe.

AUK 010CD

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Zero EP CD (AUK 010CD) 7.00
Originally released in 2000. Taking into consideration the last time we heard from The Brian Jonestown Massacre, longtime fans of the BJM might still be a little taken aback by the songs on this 36-minute EP, somewhat of a departure from what BJM shaman and group leader Anton Newcombe has previously written and recorded with a revolving-door membership of sidemen and women. That is why the title and artwork (with its colorful pinwheel flowers) goes out of its way to imply that there are "zero" songs from the album Bravery, Repetition and Noise included here.

THIRD SOUND, THE: The Third Sound CD (AUK 101CD) 12.00
The conception that became The Third Sound was first formed when former Singapore Sling and Hudson Wayne member Hakon Aoalsteinsson left his home of Iceland and music collective Vebeth to the contrasting rooftops of Rome. Drawing from his roots of shoegaze neo-psychedelia, he made sleight-of-hand gestures towards country, blues and Kraut and recorded his first album with '60s aficionado Francesco D'Onofrio. THIRD SOUND, THE: The Third Sound LP (AUK 101LP) 14.50
Gatefold LP version. Returning home, he finished the album with guitar prodigy Hallberg Daoi Hallergsson (Jakobinarina), and began experimenting with new mixing techniques, being inspired by a theory known as the Third Sound.

GUNMAN & THE HOLY GHOST: Things to Regret or Forget LP (AUK 102LP) 14.50
For fans of Lee Hazlewood, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Jesus & Mary Chain, & Spiritualized. Gunman & The Holy Ghost is another music project created by Hákon Aðalsteinsson (The Third Sound). The songs were written in Berlin during the coldest months of the winter then recorded and mixed next springtime. Now available on 180 gram vinyl. From a review by JJ Baker: "When I started listening to Gunman & The Holy Ghost it actually made me laugh. Such misery! This is melancholy with gristle! This album is barefaced in its misery-it doesn't resist it, it uses it. Song titles like 'I Don't Believe in Love Anymore' and 'Oh Lord, Let Me Die in Pain' are pretty good indication of what we're in for here, though there's great variation on this deliciously dark album. Opener 'The Eight to Five Train to Nothing' snared me right in the lip and I was willfully dragged up through that ink black water and onto the good ship Gunman. There's a great range of styles played with here, mainly in the realm of folk rock. Rollicking country tales of a cowboy's solitude, mid tempo jaunts of misery and yearning R 'n B tinged folk. 'Like a Soldier...' is the most Cohen-esque number, undoubtedly paying homage to the great poet in sound and lyrics. The military beat used is a stroke of simple genius and lends itself beautifully to the metaphor the song -- that love is war. Closer 'Dream of a Highway' opens softly enough and builds superbly, before unfolding into its noisy, dramatic conclusion. It's a song that reaches great heights, and, like all good albums do, leaves us hungering for more."

DEAD SKELETONS, THE: Dead Magick CD (AUK 103CD) 12.00
2011 release. What is a "dead skeleton?" Can such an entity exist? Sonic wizards [alt: warlocks] Jon Saemundur, Henrik Bjornsson and Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt probe such questions of depth and intensity on their first full-length release Dead Magick. This album illuminates the fact that magick -- as well as music -- is far from "dead." In fact, Dead Magick is a vibrant collection of mystical meanderings through space, time, and all that is. Dead Magick formulates and communicates dynamic concepts, as well as illustrates them via the oldest form of human expression: music.

DIRTY BEACHES: Water Park Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD (AUK 104CD) 8.00
Water Park is a film score written for Director Evan Prosofsky's same-titled film, and explores the neutral element of sound in a massive indoor water park located in West Edmonton Mall, in the province of Alberta, Canada. The instrumentation of oscillators, heavily reverberated strings, mellotron/chamberlain, and experimental electric guitar sets the mood for this bizarre plastic tropical paradise that's within a shopping mall.

This alchemical marriage of elements new and old resulted in a novel iteration of the Weird Owl identity, bringing the band even closer to the interstellar flight that has always been its objective. Recorded and mixed by Jeffrey Berner (NAAM, Heliotropes, La Otracina) at Galuminum Foil Studio in Brooklyn in April and May of 2013, Weird Owl's new musical direction revealed itself as an exciting and unique mind blast.

LES BIG BYRD: They Worshipped Cats CD (AUK 110CD) 12.50
Les Big Byrd unleash their debut full-length release, They Worshipped Cats, on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings. When Anton recently visited Stockholm with his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, he ran into the guys from Les Big Byrd at a local record shop, and they started talking about music. Anton invited the band down to his studio in Berlin to record and jam for a few days and it was there that a big part of They Worshipped Cats was conceived and recorded. The album is filled with beautifully melancholic melodies, poems of time-space continuum read through vocoders, cosmic clouds of filtered string machines, motorik Krautrock drums, and 12-string. Les Big Byrd was formed in Stockholm by Joakim Åhlund and Frans Johansson a couple of years ago. Joakim was brought up in the late '70s by an immigrant mom in Bagarmossen, a Stockholm suburb where kids sniffed glue in the concrete basements, and the local smalltime gangsters did drive-by's long before Sweden even knew what the phrase meant. At the same time, Frans grew up in the very north of Sweden in a small town with 9 months of winter and darkness every year. They each eventually joined different rock bands that brought them out of Sweden and into a different world, which took them across Japan, England, Europe and America. Frans' band Fireside got signed by Rick Rubin to his label Def American and Jocke had a taste of international success with '60s-influenced garage-pop outfit Caesars, as well as his other, more electronically-flavored project, Teddybears. Years later, Frans and Jocke met up again after both Caesars and Fireside had crashed and burned due to drug-fueled intrigues, road-weariness, bad management or complete lack thereof. They decided that they still -- in spite of everything -- had their love for music intact, and the dream in common to get the perfect band together and give it one more shot. They recruited Jocke's former bandmate, drummer Nino Keller and keyboardist Konie and started jamming and rehearsing. Joakim had been running a recording studio in Stockholm, writing and producing for Swedish and international artists, including Robyn and Håkan Hellström, and had also directed music videos for prominent Swedish exports such as Bob Hund, Refused, Broder Daniel and The International Noise Conspiracy. Keyboardist Konie also runs a studio in Stockholm, where he's been recording a number of film scores as well as many of Sweden's most interesting black metal acts.

KVB, THE: Out of Body CD (AUK 111CD) 11.00
After touring the UK with Loop and Australia in December 2013 with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The KVB's six-track EP is the culmination of a week-long recording session at Anton Newcombe's studio in Berlin. They recruited the help of Joe Dilworth (Stereolab) to contribute live drums to the recordings , and this was the first time the band have worked outside of their own studio set-up at their home in South London. Out of Body is a further exploration of the band's interest in phenomenology, bodily immersion and consciousness. Introspective lyrics are suspended in dream-like melodies, further expanding upon the duo's hypnotic aesthetic which they explore both sonically and visually on the record. The KVB is the audio/visual project of London youngsters Nicholas Wood & Kat Day, who combine reverb-heavy wall-of-sound guitars, minimal, haunting strings and grinding bass synths, messed-up motorik drum machine beats and delay-drenched vocals with a backdrop of imagery to accompany the symphony, that's nothing short of life-affirming. Such full sensory assaults have seen The KVB's live following swell and their gig schedule become busier all the time, with multiple European headline tours as well as a West Coast USA tour in summer 2012 since the release of their debut album Always Then. The KVB is a group with a sense of urgency about it, to do what they need to do, with full commitment and without delay.

The Blue Angel Lounge signed to Anton Newcombe's (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) label A Recordings, and 2014 sees their return with their third studio album A Sea of Trees. Since the release of their previous album Narcotica, the band have been garnering international acclaim, touring the U.S., UK and France with the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and also making appearances at the Austin Psych Fest and Roskilde. A Sea of Trees sees the band blossom into its own, incorporating the experimentation of their most recent EP and single releases ("Ewig" 2012, "Walls" 2013). From the very first moment of A Sea of Trees, the epic opening track "Winter" wastes no time sonically detailing where the band has been. The band's weapons of choice, guitars coupled with harmonium and singer Nils Ottensmeyer's powerful Nico'esque vocals culminate in genre-bending territory belonging to them alone.

SWEARING AT MOTORISTS: While Laughing, The Joker Tells the Truth CD (AUK 113CD) 12.50
"Like Iggy Pop's great lost Nashville record or the legendary demos for the Strokes masterpiece that never was, this recording is full of catchy courage, significant low notes, bedroom rhythms, hooks, and so on, all of which make for an impossible amount of pleasure. This Swearing At effort towers heads and squirrels above whatever that was you were just listening to." --Camden Joy; Swearing At Motorists has come a long way since its birth as a poster for a fake band in 1994. A few months after the posters mysteriously appeared in record stores & music venues around Dayton, Ohio, Dave Doughman jokingly scrawled the name on a cassette of home recordings that he gave to friends, and the band was officially born. The late '90s found S@M releasing a slew of 7" EPs on different labels, and after getting repeated plays from John Peel and favorable press worldwide, the band landed a contract with the then new label Secretly Canadian. They released two EPs & four LPs on SC, including 2000's Number Seven Uptown & 2002's This Flag Signals Goodbye, both of which were named MOJO Magazine's "Underground Album of the Year" the years they were released. Swearing At Motorists relocated to Berlin, Germany in 2005, releasing their last LP for Secretly Canadian, Last Night Becomes This Morning the following year before quietly disappearing into the never-ending Berlin night. Eight years later, the band has resurfaced in Hamburg, Germany with a new album titled While Laughing, The Joker Tells the Truth. Co-produced by Dave and Rick McPhail (of the legendary German band Tocotronic), the album tells the tales of those "lost" 8 years in classic Motorists style.

MAGIC CASTLES: Sky Sounds CD (AUK 114CD) 12.50
Magic Castles are a five-piece psychedelic rock band from Minneapolis, MN. Their sound has been described as minimalistic, dream pop & neo-psychedelic rock. Drawing from a myriad of influences, combining the hazy, "floaty" atmospherics of bands like Spacemen 3 and Galaxie 500, with the organ-drenched psych of the mid/late '60s -- particularly American west coast folk-rock, Magic Castles continue to create an altogether unique sound. Since their 2012 release on Anton Newcombe's imprint, they have toured consistently, building a solid reputation for wall-of-sound live shows, stretching out their songs to new dimensions. The Magic Castles were the supporting act for BJM's east coast tour in 2012. Thrasher Magazine recently used their song "Big Sur" in a skate video alongside Kurt Vile. On April 20th 2014, BJM released a beautiful 12" split single with The Magic Castles for Record Store Day. Sky Sounds was recorded at The Old Blackberry Way Studio in Minneapolis, MN by Neil Weir. Produced by Neil Weir & Jason Edmonds, Sky Sounds sees the band reaching new heights. The album is dense with lush arrangements, jangling backward guitar sweeps, ever-deepening melodic layers, symphonic Farfisa tones, and bright vocal harmonies. A host of guest musicians were included on select tracks, adding cello, viola, flute & trombone.

Schlachthofbronx pride themselves on the diversity of their touring schedule -- they can follow a rave in a small Bavarian town's strip club with a big festival in Mexico, a special one-off show with a brass band at Munich's Oktoberfest, or a performance on a sound system truck during London's Notting Hill Carnival. These guys play clubs, festivals, museums, tents, boats, floats, buses, strip joints, and beer gardens; it doesn't matter where, Schlachthofbronx always start a party. HASSELL & BRIAN ENO, JON: Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics LP+CD (GB 019LP) 26.50
Repressed. Gatefold LP version on 180 gram vinyl with CD. Originally released in 1980, Jon Hassell and Brian Eno's collaborative album Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics is a sound document whose ongoing influence seems beyond dispute. Not only is the album a defining moment in the development of what Eno coined as "ambient music" but it also facilitated the introduction of Hassell's "future primitive" trumpet stylings and visionary "Fourth World" musical theories to the broader public. These vectors continue to enrich contemporary audio culture. Eno's ambient strategies are now fixed in the DNA of electronic music and the cross-cultural legacy of Hassell's "Fourth World" concept is apparent not only in the marketplace genre "World Music" but also more persuasively in the accelerating number of digitally-driven, borderless musical fusions we now experience. By the time that Eno and Hassell met, Hassell's experiments with a "Fourth World" musical vocabulary were well underway and in fact it was because of these experiments, particularly Hassell's debut album Vernal Equinox that Brian Eno purposefully sought him out. Within a couple of months of Hassell's performance at The Kitchen the duo entered Celestial Sound in New York City and began work on what would become Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics. Hassell invited previous collaborators like the Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and the Senegalese drummer Ayibe Dieng to join the sessions. Most of the tracks carry a Hassell/Eno writing credit, though the 20-minute "Charm (Over 'Burundi Cloud')" was a carryover from Hassell's concert repertoire. Hassell has made it clear in several interviews over the years that the album's shared billing was at least partly inaccurate and that Eno's contribution was mainly as a producer. More spiky, angular and steeped in rhythm and exoticism than most of Eno's records and more drone-based, reflective and sonorous than most of Hassell's outings, Possible Musics -- whatever the actual division of labor in sound and concept -- is a seminal highlight in both of their discographies. A meeting of two of the late 20th century's most restless and prescient musicians, the album sounds as beguiling, indeterminate and otherworldly today as it did 34 years ago when it was originally released. The impact of Possible Musics on the contemporary music conversation was almost immediate. Just ten days after it was mastered, Brian Eno and David Byrne convened in Los Angeles to continue experiments inspired in part by Hassell's musical theories. The resultant album would be called My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. All parties involved agree that Ghosts was originally conceived as a trio project that included Hassell but the idea fell apart over disagreements about logistics and musical direction. Hassell still remains bitter about what he considers the projects un-credited appropriation of his musical signatures. From there it was a short jump forward to the chart-topping, Afro-futurism of The Talking Heads Remain in Light, an album that Eno co-produced and Hassell guested on. "Fourth World" strategies have echoed, and can still be heard echoing in the music of Peter Gabriel, Nils Petter Molvaer, Björk, David Sylvian, David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Damon Albarn, DJ Spooky, Jah Wobble, Matmos, 23 Skidoo, Goat, Bill Laswell, Mark Ernestus, Adrian Sherwood, and of course, the ongoing projects of Eno and Hassell themselves. Glitterbeat is proud and honored to re-release and re-introduce this compelling, groundbreaking album.

"This KSAN radio broadcast marks a pivotal moment in the convoluted history of one of the West Coast's foremost bands, Jefferson Airplane. On this particular evening, Sunday 4th October 1970, San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom played host to the very cream of the city's psychedelic pioneers. But it was a supremely memorable event for two other reasons. Firstly, Janis Joplin had died the night before in Hollywood of a heroin overdose, and secondly, it marked the last appearance of Airplane founder and co-lead vocalist Marty Balin as a member of the band for almost 20 years."

"Free jazz, free rock, rock jazz, modal jazz, sound experiments, and chamber music just to name a few. Joachim Kühn unites the most distinct expressions, forming a culture with his polystylistic experiences including romanticism, tonal and atonal qualities, modern compositions, and European but also global characteristics. The 'clean style' doctrine never interested him as purism had always bored him. He associated his name with everything including a distinct personal style as well as his improvisational and compositional handwriting. It is more complex than a one-dimensional acoustic picture of the virtuous energetic musician, the Dionysian and ecstatic friend, shimmering waterfalls, a steady pace, and than that of what the occasional testosterone-filled machismo radiates. Each CMP album documents his sources of inspiration, which are so rich of pianists and their microcosms. Independent and uncompromising. There is a lot included in the music, but one thing isn't for sure: mainstream."

RER B8

BIOTA: Funnel to a Thread CD (RER B8) 16.00
"Since the late 1970s Biota has ploughed its own furrow, producing a body of work that resembles nothing anyone else has done or is yet doing. Their compositions evolve in long, constantly shifting timbral blocks filled with fragments and echoes of quasi-familiar musical languages. They use instrumental resources bridging half a millennium and two thirds of the planet to create unique combinations of texture, color and movement. It's a music of constant flux, dissolving, re-forming and mutating without agitation or stress, where motion and stasis blend into a single ambiguous condition. And although it will never arrive, the path, with its simultaneous familiarity and strangeness has an eerie power to compel. The recordings, as always from the Dys Studio, are meticulous and carefully constructed -- the fused product of generation after generation of processing and mixing. There's an almost Feldmanesque quality of necessity and unpredictability. The band now takes, on average, five years to prepare, record and finalize a new release. They're in no hurry."

RER LCD2-3

COOPER, LINDSAY: Rarities Volumes 1 & 2 2CD (RER LCD2-3) 24.00
"Lindsay Cooper was a rare and extraordinary woman; at home in rock bands (Henry Cow, National Health), jazz ensembles (Mike Westbrook Orchestra, Maarten Altena Octet), concert halls ('Concerto for Sopranino Saxophone and Orchestra,' 'Songs for Bassoon and Orchestra'); she also founded the Feminist Improvising Group, scored feature films, wrote for television, dance, radio, theater, contemporary ensembles, and orchestras, and was highly respected as a virtuoso performer on several instruments. A number of recordings are still available, but much is undocumented. The rarities series hopes to redress this lack. The two CD set includes two previously unreleased gems: 33 minutes and 33 seconds of a beautiful recording of the Trio Trabant (Lindsay Cooper, Alfred Harth, and Phil Minton) made in 1991 and heard here for the first time, and the luminous Rosetta Stone that is 'Piano Roulette,' a newly discovered piano solo performed at a concert in New York in 1985."

RER ST4

TICKMAYER, STEVAN KOVACS: Gaps, Absences: To the Memory of László Kerekes (1954-2011) CD (RER ST4) 16.00
"A beautifully recorded and produced cycle of works that combine complexity and precision with rich and unfamiliar timbres. The ensemble pieces amplify and enrich a core piano with various combinations of harmonium, double bass, violin, percussion, Hungarian zither, citara bassa, bowed cymbals, alto clarinet, melodica, sampler and field recordings, all sparsely but powerfully deployed. A deep and powerful music, it is distinguished by both crystalline clarity and cinematic low frequency power; and no fat or redundancy. By combining the edgy presence of acoustic instrumental performance with the width and depth of electroacoustic processing, these pieces confound all genre typing; they are fiendishly complex but they grip like a thriller as they unfold and twist through their ten dense chapters. Rare today, this is a living music. Tickmayer by now can safely be counted amongst the best of that late generation of east block composers who combined a fearsome education with an aesthetic that drew even-handedly on the most austere contemporary music, free jazz, rock and '60s electronics. Above all this is a CD of prodigious performances and great imagination."

LEGENDARY PINK DOTS, THE: 10 to the Power of 9 Volume 2 LP (RBL 006LP) 31.00
"This is second volume of a complex story about conspiracy, magic, and spirituality. Minimal synths, guitars, syncopated rhythms that are making weird, psychedelic, and transcendental noises which are of course accompanied by the distinctive voice of Ka-Spel. Lying on your sofa, pumping up the volume and just dream away on their ethereal sounds. 10 to the Power of 9 is a dark and exceptional trip into their warped and bizarre musical psyche. For sure one of the best concept albums of the band. 40 minutes of pure Legendary Pink Dots."
