Weirdo Tokely #420

E-mail Print PDF

Saturday February 7th, Weirdo's Sixth Birthday Party takes place at Hostelling International (19 Stuart Street, a couple of blocks from the Wilbur downtown). Be there at 8p and see the best music and laff makers in the city. There will be tons of gifts for everyone in attendance, as it's all the fault of Boston's world class community of music fans for making something as improbable as a record store happen all this time. Free to get in, donations requested, byob. Come see Wes Hazard, Ethan Marsh, John Paul Rivera, Ethan Parcell, Eric Dahlman, Katie McCarthy, Terence Pennington, Ben Hersey, and Seamus Williams. Plainly said, they're gonna blow your mind.

Hiya, everybody.
Tomorrow night here at the shop, we've got a big glop of synths from Ancient Origin. Supoosed to be a big glop of snow here too, so maybe take a minute to check in first, but the shop will absolutely, definitely, defiantly be open.

Alvarius B Fuck You and the Horse You Rode In On lp

Alvarius B Fuck You and the Horse You Rode In On lp

lp 2013/1981-83 new A lot of great music really does start with self-absorbed dicking around, and the trick is to keep going long enough to get to the great music part. Alvarius B at 21 years old was bored out of his bitterly pissed-off mind in the wide nothing of Arizona, & not quite the lightning-winged guitar-swordsman of sarcasm he would one day become. So while this is immensely pleasing to have on wax, it's a terrible place to start if you're missing the rest of the catalog. Acoustic guitar strangling throughout, sometimes in imitation of West African gimbri, and more often in imitation of some local hardcore band. An electric version of 'What Child Is This', turning the tv on & off, an early version of a song from 'Horse Cock Phephner', straight blues (!), crickets, sped up cassette tape. 'Grandpa's Checkered Trousers' & even 'Evil Hearted Dub' are good enough that they could have come out on the first solo album. One seems to've been recorded especially in a bathroom, & some are stunted forerunners of stuff like 'Blood Baby' or 'Black Shoes'.

Amigos de Maria Rock cd

Amigos de Maria Rock cd

cd 2005/1973/1968 new Awesome deluge of hard fuzz pounders from Chile. Get whiplash from trying to keep track of all the sick & nasty riffs. Heavy & unbalanced versions of the Box Tops' 'The Letter', Ray Charles' 'What'd I Say'. Some songs are in English & some in Spanish. Band also made a couple of singles backing obscure South American/Russian rockabilly cult-hero Dean Reed (whose nickname in Chile was 'Mr Simpatia').
Underground Masters $15.00

Beauregarde lp

Beauregarde lp

lp 2006/1971 new Master of psychedelic boogie nightmares Larry Pitchford, a Portland, OR wrestler during the mid & late 60s. Beauregarde trained in the Philippines, & once toured Australia with Killer Kowalski. During his reign he dressed up as Napoleon, a pirate, a cowboy, Cleopatra (!), a blonde Elvis, a pilgrim, Julius Caesar, or just in fur & mutton chops, and made all of his costumes himself. Apparently though, Beau's real love (apart from greasing up & sticking his thumb in the throats of large men) was music. So when he heard a teenage Greg Sage (Wipers) playing guitar at a practice space, Beau instantly bulldozed the kid into playing hot Hendrix knockoffs & funk wacka-wackas on this album. Legit swagger & sharp production only serve to highlight the charm of Beau's tuneless but captivating voice. Timeless & endearing lyrics include exhortations to ball daily, or meditations on Janis, Jimi & Jim's mortality. Best line: 'But life became such a drag He finally shot up on his last bag.'

Cecil Leuter Pop Electronique cd

Cecil Leuter Pop Electronique cd

cd 2010/1969 new French moog library music. I still find it incomprehensible that somebody with such a naturally porn-ready name as Roger Roger would up and change it to *Cecil* in order to put out a cash-in record. But the real world is always stranger than my imagination, and that's just what Monsieur Roger did here. Not quite as cute as his countrymen Perrey & Kingsley, but these stripped down beat heavy bloopers are frothy & indelible.

COB Spirit of Love lp

COB Spirit of Love lp

lp 2007/1970 new Rightly regarded as the very best folk/acid-folk/rolk-rock/whatever band to ever exist. Clive Palmer showed up in Edinburgh & wowed everybody with his banjo playing. He founded the Incredible String Band, and then took off for India to buy instruments & get high on exotic life. Upon his return, he blew off Williamson & Heron, & instead started up a series of equally amazing psychedelic folk bands. After a few tries, he perfected the band formula & came up with this album. Surpassed only by the 2nd COB lp. Stellar songwriting & gorgeous arrangements that will only improve after ten, and then ten thousand listens.

Daisy Chain Straight or Lame cd

cd 2005/1967 new Top shelf all-girl LA shindig that can shag with the best of the go-go girls or just lay out cool for a ballad. Always reminds of the Feminine Complex, but just a touch more R&B here. Farfisa, harmonica, & the occasional acoustic guitar round things out.

Daniel Arfib Musique Numerique cdr

Daniel Arfib Musique Numerique cdr

cdr 2008/1981 new Streams of trebly electronic bubbles jetting at your head from all sides, just like if you dunked it in a steamy hot tub. Arfib ran a computer music studio in Marseilles, where he spent many years coordinating research & conferences on computerized, & later digital audio.

David Tudor Live Electronic Music cd

David Tudor Live Electronic Music cd

cd 2004/1970-84 new Along with everything else he did, Tudor was also the guy who took electronic music outside a white room with a ten foot tall patch bay system and started improvising it live in halls & on the radio. Pretty much any noise performer owes the man a pat on the back. One piece here ran recordings of brainwaves through a computer de-glitcher that was meant to separate voices from background noise. Another has animal sounds as the source.

Derek Bailey Incus Taps cd

Derek Bailey Incus Taps cd

cd 1996/1973 new Crinkly & tinny electric guitar spelunks that wig off like July sparklers, but also slow down for whippoorwill hoots of feedback. Could be anything from a thumb piano garroting a koto, to a mantis dancing on power lines, but most of the noises just come from one very grouchy guy's fingertips. A powerhouse of spiky, crimped prickles that leaves about 50 years of jazz tradition in the dust. Originally released as 4 different boxes of reel to reel tape.

El Alamo Malos Pensamientos lp

Eston son Los Impala 10 inch

Eston son Los Impala 10 inch

10 inch 2009/1966 new Venezuelan band that moved to Madrid to try and break through to the public. After lots of teen tv shows & band battles, they were finally voted onto the lineup of the big Festival de Los Idolos. This eventually spawned a hit, and as soon as they were popular in Venezuela, they promptly moved home and changed their name to Impala Syndrome. Amphetamine R&B edge as demanded by hopped-up Spanish nightclub goers, but they could also whip out the Zombie-style harmonies on command.

Francois De Roubaix Courts Metrages 2lp

Francois De Roubaix Courts Metrages 2lp

2lp 2011/1963-76 new The guy who did the score for Alain Delon's 'Le Samourai' and a bunch of stuff starring Johnny Hallyday. Roubaix taught himself to play trombone when he was a kid. He also helped out at his dad's work, and so helped edit educational films while he was still in school. One of his father's colleagues gave him the chance to work on a small score. And before long he had a home studio where he happily overdubbed morbid flute lines on top of electronics or percussion sound effects, sitars on top of church organs, etc. Really nice overview that shows him responding to (but not exactly knocking off) Westerns, thrillers, can-can dances, crime jazz, and all of it with striking and unique arrangements.

Francsco De Masi/Alessandro Alessandroni Lesbo cd

Francsco De Masi/Alessandro Alessandroni Lesbo cd

cd 2010/1969 new A yummy softcore score by two of Italy's captivating soundtrack gents. Bouyant summertime lounge with lots of wordless female vocals. They're not by Edda herself, but a different member of I Cantori Moderni. I'm guessing it's Alessandroni's wife Guilia De Mutiis, with whom he rather notably sings on Piero Umiliani's 'Mah Na Mah Na'. De Masi is at the top of his game, with rolling, swelling strings, languid tempos, and the occasional bass twang stolen from a nearby spaghetti score whenever he needs a hint of danger.

Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet Another Miserable Day lp

Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet Another Miserable Day lp

lp 2006 new Boy girl duo of San Franians who're Caroliner related, at least on the aesthetics front. Together they purport to be a single elderly German gentleman who likes NASA & the hard rockin' guitars of the Scorpions. They also wear two-foot-tall gingerbread houses on their heads in public. Their moog-o-phonic noises bubble, gurgle & spit amongst creepy exotica samples, ancient cardboard polkas, and the occasional yelp of surprise. One of my fave bands of '06.

Hans Krusi EX HK lp

lp 2008/197x new Outsider painter from Switzerland who became popular in Zurich art world in the 80s. When he wasn't doodling on napkins or painting postcards with psychedelic watercolors to sell along with flowers at his daily street-vending job, Krusi also used 2nd hand cassette recorders to capture birds, insects, chiming bells, & the radio around his shithole apartment in St. Gallen. Here's a recently discovered sound collage, which rather than puttering around from one sound to another, confidently holds on whichever crude noises Krusi likes best.

Horrific Child L'Etrange Monsieur Whinster lp

Horrific Child L'Etrange Monsieur Whinster lp

lp 2010/1976 new Jean Pierre Massiera's stinkiest, grodiest record, which stands out even amidst his catalog of grotesqueries. High art prog & dark, kinky sounds were all the rage in France at this time (for most bands it went alongside some Zappa-worship), but Massiera's minimoog theatrics are fragmented to the nth druggy degree- like a death seen in the shards of a mirror during some Argento movie. The hoarse whispers & growls are Massiera's own voice, eroded by a godzillion bottles of wine. A solo lp underneath it all, which calls upon a whole cast of studio musicians, backup singers, arrangers, & equipment toys that his Antibes studio had been building up for the previous few years. Samples of African records, surreal 19th century poetry (specifically 'Les Chants de Maldoror'- also an inspiration to Current 93), & macabre sprays of organs & orchestras.

Jonas Palm Ze Wormnest cdr

Jonas Palm Ze Wormnest cdr

cdr 2011/1980 new Swedish alto sax player & monster Tangerine Dream fan gets hold of a couple of Korgs and tokes up at college, resulting in a percolating synth fest that could've easily been recorded last week. Zoomin' textures are severely 80s, but remarkably fluid & have an endearing sci-fi-horror-flick profundity. If that dude from Umberto doesn't own this record, guy's really gonna slap himself when he hears it.

Ladies WC cd

Ladies WC cd

cd 2004/1969 new Venezuelan band with an American expat on bass & vox, but the real leader here is guitarist Adib Casta (previously in Los Claners). Ripping, beefy fuzz licks that curl back onto themselves with wah (for the faster, Cream-inspired songs) or peal forth like a flag in the wind (on the ballads). Broken only by wonderful near-falsetto singing that's got phasing effects on it, and a couple of goofy sound samples (baby, splash, the obligatory toilet flush) between tracks. It's a perennial at my house.

Laghonia Et Cetera cd

Laghonia Et Cetera cd

cd 2005/1971 new Saul & Manuel Cornejo's fashionable but nonetheless odd attempt to incorporate more heavy rock elements into their stained-glass world of Peruvian Paul McCartney harmonies. Vocal lines that stretch like silly putty, incendiary fuzz & wah, slatherings of Hammond B (as they were the only band in town who had one), outrageous mangled-English lyrics. If I remember correctly, Saul painted the cover art himself to reflect what can only be described as the bad acid meltdown of the world at large.
World In Sound $19.50

Le Son De L'Os Grass Pillow cd

Le Son De L'Os Grass Pillow cd

cd 2011 new Unearthly & tense improv. Shizuo Uchida is from the killer Kito Mizukumi Rouber & plays a one string bass, and the group apparently usually performs outdoors (except there's prepared piano here, so I think they may've come inside for a change). Lots of echoey hooting vocals, prickly tinkling, and a really somber, portentous sense of timing that keeps you hanging on edge to see what'll happen next.

Louis & Bebe Barron Forbidden Planet cd

Louis & Bebe Barron Forbidden Planet cd

cd 1996/1956 new A righteous stalwart of 1950s electronic music. Louis & Bebe built their own electronic music studios and basically invented the sound of sci-fi when their herculean efforts were featured in a soon-to-be-classic B-movie. Gorgeous & lumbering bloops, zaps and throbs creep toward an inevitable horizon. Whether that horizon holds utopia or oblivion is of course up to you.

New Juggler Sound Trouble Childs 10 inch

New Juggler Sound Trouble Childs 10 inch

10 inch 2012/1965-69 new Early versions of the sublime songs that would show up on Laghonia's 'Glue'. Lima musicians Saul and Manuel Cornejo started out as UK soundalikes & recorded 3 singles. Upon playing with guitarist David Levene (and yeah, they probably also noticed the new dictaorship under General Juan Velasco Alvarado) they suddenly decided to re-christen their group Laghonia. A couple of early Beatles-ish workouts here, but their signature badass Cream guitar slop over bongos shows up almost immediately. Yummy.

Ngozi Family 45000 Volts lp

Appropriately chintsy production, a mix of English lyrics, stratospherically groovy funk bass, and some jaw dropping wah playing. There's even a few traditional Zambian rhythm rave ups. Not one you should miss.

lp 2010 new Filthy Swedes Dan (texts, trumpet, now guitar) & Drajan (drums) of the towering, iron-hearted Brainbombs. Seems like the duo just keep trying to pare down again & again, until there's no ornamentation, no accents, no treble, just the flat affect of anhedonia and a single foul riff. Nudge Squidfish Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Nashville lp

Nudge Squidfish Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Nashville lp

lp 2010/1985/1983-85 new Pal of Jim Shep & sometime member of Mike Rep's Quotas & True Believers, who moved briefly to Nashville, & so sent his buddies in Columbus tapes of himself playing. A collection from these pen pal packages launched Mike Rep's label Old Age/No Age. Upon returning home, Nudge also became the bass player of Shephard's V3. Nudge's songs show off that ever-so-slight softer edge (vocal harmonies, keyboards, Syd Barrett melodies, a Christmas song, etc.), which I think is one of the Quotas' most underrated ingredients. Same blasted & blurry 4 track production of course, and the Stooges & warped-sci-fi moments do come on stronger toward the end of side B. Maybe it's not the galliwomp that is 'Stupor Hiatus', but there are certiainly flashes. 'Backlot of Gilligan's Isle' is about as perfect as songs get- I think even Cole Porter could get down with that one.

Orchestre Regional de Mopti Best of the First Biennale lp

lp 2010/1970 new Oh cripes, that hypnotic guitar is so bewitching! The rest of the record is good, but the phantasmal clipped riff & liquefying horns on "Recital" brings you one of the finest moments in African music. Period. The song is dedicated to Seku Amadou, the leader of the Massina Empire, who founded Mopti as a city & ruled from 1818-1845. Mopti lies as the x point in the cross of Mali's geography and it's rivers. It's the venice of the Niger delta, not far from mud mosques & where the Dogon see stars without telescopes, and the capital for Mali tourists. The band was 14 members strong, led by singer Sory Bamba, funded by the state. Besides a 10 inch sized single, this is their only album.

Here's tracks from two of Thomas' biggest serials: Edgar Wallace & Jerry Cotton.

Philippe Besombes Libra lp

Philippe Besombes Libra lp

lp 2010/1975 new Asked to fill in for Pink Floyd when a couple of filmmakers realized they couldn't release their movie using music they swiped off records, a French chemistry student lifted some equipment from nearby physics labs, stashed it in his girlfriend's parents' basement, and started making tapes. Besombes did some studying under Stockhausen & Xenakis when he wasn't dropping acid, so although there's a lot of jump cuts between unrelated styles here, the recording quality & textures are subtle & fascinating. Everything from a woman glugging to an organ playing while a kid plays ball in the distance, oily drum breaks, and plenty of zips & plops from oscillators. No wonder he made the NWW list twice.

Rita Lee Hoje e o Primeiro Dia do Resto da Sua Vida cd

Rita Lee Hoje e o Primeiro Dia do Resto da Sua Vida cd

cd 2006/1972 new 2nd & much freakier solo record, with hefty contributions from all the members of Os Mutantes. Lots of unique juxtapositions in the arrangements: Queen/Wings harmonies, vocoder, chipmunk voices, odd drum breaks, one or two prog riffs & a couple of wack 70s AM radio ones too, tape effected whistling over harp, mooged-out sambas. Quote from Julie Andrews' 'The Lonely Goatherd' followed by one from Black Sabbath's 'NIB' less than two minutes later remains quite a sock-knocker.

Ron House Blind Boy in the Backseat lp

lp 2010 new Bunch of early recordings by the guy from Great Plains/Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, many of which feature fellow Columbus dirtbums Mike Rep & Tommy Jay. Cracked & beer-sodden vocals reach for the sky & arc just enough to sketch a melody. Guitars bawl & trip over themselves. Lyrics don't just reference, but evoke a real life you may've met in your own. Previously a cassette on Old Age/No Age & some tracks appeared on a 1999 cd 'New Wave as the Next Guy'.

lp 2006/1970 new Haunting & transcendent dirge songs that are so far beyond folk they just don't have a genre anymore. Soaring wild & stormy vocals over moody electric undertow have made this one an underground classic for many years. Buckley supposedly conceived this style by listening to Cathy Berberian & wanting to mix it with something like a Doors record instead of Luciano Berio! 12 string, bass, pipe organ, electric guitar, electric piano, congas. Subliminal Sounds $24.00

Various Treacle Toffee World cd

Various Treacle Toffee World cd

cd 2008/1967-68 new Third volume in this gorgeous but sadly unheralded series dedicated to the sugary, frilly, and fey popsike wonders at Apple publishing. Heady phase numbers about lace-covered girls trapped in attics, & sad old men who seem to have an excess of gardening work. Pre-Badfinger band the Iveys, Grapefruit, lots more mouthwatering obscurities.
RPM $15.00

Various Ultrachicks Vol. 1 cd

Various Ultrachicks Vol. 1 cd

cd 1995/196x new Brassy, bossy, swingin & saucy, these French femmes will sock it to you. Sometimes they're fluffy and sometimes they're freaky, but there's so many tuff filles here you'll think you've died & gone to le ciel du garage. Includes the best & rawest song by Christie Laume ('Rouge Rouge'), whose older brother pulled an Anna Nicole Smith when he married Edith Piaf at the end of her life. Christie went to live in Piaf's mansion when she was 20 & became a ye-ye singer within months.
Ultrachicks $13.00

Various Ultrachicks Vol. 2 cd

This volume's standout track is undoubtedly Anna Karina's (impossibly hot & dirty onetime wife of Jean Luc Godard) "Roller Girl."

Various Where the Girls Are Vol. 2 cd

Various Where the Girls Are Vol. 2 cd

cd 2003/1963-70 new The best series around for girl group collectors, with a bit of northern soul thrown in, extensively researched notes with pix, and unreleased tracks dug out of the vaults.
Ace $17.00

Various Where the Girls Are Vol. 5 cd

Various Where the Girls Are Vol. 5 cd

cd 2003/1961-1971 new One of the best series out there for girl group, The frothy, melodramatic, pounding, kittenish, laughably square, & raccoon eye-linered mavens are all here. A few tracks by femmes who are, strictly speaking, outside the genre lines (Doris Day, Laura Nyro). But the sounds don't lie, and there's also major rarities (Orchids) & deep groovin soul ladies that never made it to the industries on either coast (Opals).
Ace $17.00
