Hiya, everybody.
Supposed to be a ton of snow again tomorrow, but the shop will absolutely be open. Foam & Ted Lee are scheduled to play, as is Ancient Origin in a makeup date from last week. If weather allows em to make it here, we'll have a great show ready to go at 8. Call or check online in the afternoon for the latest.

Tuesday the 10th, again, sleet nor rain nor evil gigantic drifts of white slush can keep away Wes Hazard who hosts the killer comedy/poetry/variety show It Just Got Weirdo. This month Pamela Anne, James Huessy, Kenice Mobley, Rick Canavan, Shaun Bedgood, and Princess Moon Chan. There'll be free drinks, prizes, and we'll all have warm & cozy laffs with each other. Be here at 8:30p.

Wednesday the 11th I'm playing/talking solo at the Midway along with Every Kim Parcell, Sacred Clowns & Wendy Alembic. That's 8p, 3496 Washington Street in JP.

Thursday the 12th, Duck That (me, Steve Norton, Jesse Collins, Josh Jefferson) plays the Tread Itchy Batch House in Roslindale (get in touch if you need the address). We'll be making creepy & creaky animal noises along with Spooky Dangerfield, Mark Goldstein, Cale Israel & Hollow Deck. Looking forward & starts at 8p.

Barry Gray Space 1999 cd

Barry Gray Space 1999 cd

cd 2004/1976 new Gray spent most of his career working for tv director Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds & live action marionettes in general). Here's their last collaboration, but it's a real highlight. The show involved Martin Landau standing around stiffly instead of a puppet. Plot was that a bunch of astronauts were dumping nuclear waste on the moon, when it blew up & sent the moon out of it's orbit, with them on it. Gray was a longtime ondes martenot fan, & you can hear a few still breaks of eerie electronics in amid the deeply groovy lounge-funk & dramatic brass bumpers.
Silva Screen $13.00

Black Merda lp

Black Merda lp

lp 2007/1970 new Hendrix/Cream fuzz is dumped like chocolate syrup over funk somewhere between Sly, early Funkadelic, T-Neck Isleys, and the damn Electric Prunes. A real stoned soul trip. Most people discovered this Detroit band through the great "Chains & Black Exhaust" compilation (dedicated to black hard rock & psych) from a few years back. Couple of guys here played on Edwin Starr's "Agent Double O Soul" too.

Blackout cd

Blackout cd

cd 2006/1966-67 new Fab Polish freakbeat with tons of minor-key originals. Perfect fluffy farfisa, echoey Zombies vocals & blues guitar riffs picked up from tapes of Eric Burdon's favorite blues records (Burdon actually copied some faves for a Polish guy in '65, & 3 or 4 Warsaw bands got started by passing them around). Spare recording techniques (all the money for rock bands was over in Hungary) & echoed-out ballads actually make some cuts sound as close to Asian 60s pop as they do to UK R&B. Lead guitarist Tadeusz Nalepa went on to start a long running prog/stadium rock band called Breakout. Their lp plus 7 bonus tracks from singles.
World Psychedelia $16.00

Blood Stereo Your Snakelike King lp

Blood Stereo Your Snakelike King lp

lp 2009 new At first Blood Stereo seem like they're just a big cesspool of video game noises, samples of monkeys in heat, violin scrapes, peyote chants, toilet plops, pig hollers, grunts, pants ripping, etc. But take a swim in the swamp and be choked by the hanging vines. As you sink deeper & deeper, you realize that the stinking hole you're in flows through to the other side of the globe. The chasm darkens. Haunted & transparent forms float past, ascending while you seem to remain still. The seaweed glows, the pressure of the water begins to impinge upon the spines of alien creatures. By the time the needle lifts, some guy walks up to you & asks you why you're standing on your head. Except he speaks Chinese.
Pan $20.00

Bob & Lou Five Tracks lp

Bob & Lou Five Tracks lp

lp 2011/1991-93 new Peter De Ceulaer (aka Bobby Colombo, who sadly passed away in 2010) and Luther Vanhoof made odd radioplay soundtracks in late 80s Belgium for Radiocentraal & also had one of the first releases on Ultra Eczema. Clearly they could get whatever sound they wanted out of their cobbled-together studio: field recordings of rain or a lonely girl singing, voices that change speeds in the middle of making odd whines, thunderous & ominous synth blorps, and happy banging on metal running over a recording of a catholic church service. Everything from tender & spindly acoustic guitars to ditzy disco.

Bobby Williams Funky Super Fly cd

Bobby Williams Funky Super Fly cd

cd 2008/197x new Rare singles by Florida's Soul Godfather #2, the superfunky James Brown clone, backed by his tight band the Mar-Kings. Bobby had a great big bus emblazoned with his name, a haircut that curled over his forehead just like he'd seen on King handbills & record covers, played every tiny town between Florida & Texas, and even managed to get dental care for his band members. No covers, surprisingly, and the originals are well written. Also, instead of charging his band fines & yelling at them all the time, Williams was apparently quite a soft touch. He even reminds the audience 'what a great bunch of motherfuckers' his bandmates are right on the record.
Jazzman $16.00

Bossa 70 cd

Bossa 70 cd

cd 2007/1969-71 new Awesome groovy cocktail jazz combo with the guitar player from Los Shains. Fans of bossa, beatdiggin', Luiz Eca & Sergio Mendez will blow their load here immediately, and there's some killer Morricone ripoffs along the way too. I've been cranking this one all week long, and just couldn't let it go without at least 3 listens in a row.
Repsychled $13.00

Christof Migone Crackers cd

Christof Migone Crackers cd

cd 2001/1997 new Processed field recordings of Canadian ladies & gents cracking their fingers, toes, elbows, wrists, necks, backs, knees, & hips. Migone found the folks to make the noises by putting an ad in the classifieds, which is included on the back cover. Static pops & waving hissscapes.
Locust $13.00

Crushed Butler Uncrushed cd

Crushed Butler Uncrushed cd

cd 2005/1998/1969-71 new Step lively through the gateways, past Slade & Motorhead, past Edgar Broughton, and even past Stackwaddy. And now you're ready to strip the blighted, pockmarked skin off your knees at the altar of heavy UK boogie. All sophistication has been squeezed out like toothpaste, and all that's left is bombastic vocals & slow, low riffmongering. Drummer Darryl Read begged off to be a songwriter/actor/friend of Ray Manzarek after a couple of years & the other guys became the Hammersmith Gorillas.
RPM $16.50

Ennio Morricone L'Antichristo/Sepolta Viva cd

Ennio Morricone L'Antichristo/Sepolta Viva cd

cd 1996/1973-74 new Morricone lets his Beethoven fixation run wild here & there, but this one's mostly got orchestra-heavy heartstring-tuggers. 'Sepolta Viva' is a historical epic about a poor woman punished by a powerful count, so the oboes provided contrast. Lifelong obsessions like Phantom-of-the-Opera organ, & female vocal chants arise like ghosts a little later on, especially once you get to the satan movie.
Spalax $15.00

Ghedalia Tazartes Granny Awards lp

Ghedalia Tazartes Granny Awards lp

lp 2011/198x-10 new The torpid, dizzying melodies of North Africa and/or Judaism (depending on your point of view) sung over a wide variety of samples. A babbling toddler, who turns out to've been the voice of Raphael Glucksmann (now-grown son of political philosopher Andre Glucksmann), is squeezed & churned like an accordion. 78s, scratchy violins, stuttering tape noises, and even guitars are also clutched & spun, but it's Tazartes' high, longing, mostly wordless voice that always leads the swaying dance. Previously unreleased rough edits of 'Une Eclipse Totale de Soleil'.

Harry Bertoia Unfolding cd

Harry Bertoia Unfolding cd

cd 1993/1972-9 new Furniture designer who invented a really gorgeous diamond shaped metal chair. It sold so well that he retired to a barn in the Pennsylvania countryside & spent the rest of his life making sound sculptures instead. 360 different tapes of the sculptures are reported to exist. During the mid & late 70s, Bertoia issued some of his favorite cuts from these tapes on a private record label. This cd collects two of those records. Awesome metallic dronescapes and washes made by a jolly gentleman with a pipe.
PSF $16.00

Iannis Xenakis Persepolis cd

Iannis Xenakis Persepolis cd

cd 2000/1971 new Pre-surround sound 8 track 100 speaker piece that was originally installed in the ruins of a palace along with a laser light show and a choreographed dance where 150 Iranian boys ran through the crowd carrying torches and then ran off into a forest & weren't seen again (!). Xanky's style of composing is called (by him anyway) stochastic, and that basically means that he writes songs with the same math that he used when was an architect (assistant to Le Courbousier for the breakout '58 Brussels world's fair) in order to make a field of a jillion little noises with a thick overall presence- much like hearing insects in a meadow. A big buzzing mess of electronics that sound like wind chimes, planes, or a symphony of a thousand vacuum cleaners.
Fractal $12.00

Jean Jaques Birge & Francis Gorge Shiroc Defense De cd + dvd

Jean Jaques Birge & Francis Gorge Shiroc Defense De cd + dvd

cd + dvd 2003/1974-76 new NWW list. French avant stuff has a tendency towards nasty, overly-dramatic prog, but this one's grand. Doltish plodding & stoned meanderings on synth, tapes, & drums abbetted by the occasonal blorp on pipe organ, electric piano, xylophone, cello. DVD has about 6 hours of extra music, plus a 40 minute film of nude & drugged-up hippies wandering around lost in the woods. Members went on to be in Un Drame Musical Instantane.

Milan Hell Bent for Leather lp

Milan Hell Bent for Leather lp

lp 2009/1962-69 new Fantastic set of garage & bubblegum singles by the eternally mysterious Milan, a failed producer-songwriter from New York with a motorcyle-loving, leather-sporting gimick. After a short stint as a preppy popster, he refashioned himself as the memorable biker, and later also as a bubblegum producer/songwriter. Milan happily ingested everything from Phil Spector to Tommy James to Seeds-style punk, & popped up on Lou Christie & Head Shop singles too. After being included on Pebbles compilations & hunted by Greg Shaw for years, it's now pretty much accepted that Milan's real name was Rick Rodelle & that he died of a brain tumor in the late 70s. Where he came from or who helped him record his singles remains unknown.

Mops Psychedelic Sounds in Japan lp

Mops Psychedelic Sounds in Japan lp

lp 2002/1968 new English-mangling, extreme enthusiasm, fuzz guitar, and silly bell & whistle arrangements. It's just what you'd expect from 5 Group Sounds guys gone wild. Get this and soon you too will be nodding your head frantically and saying, "I'm just a Mops".
Perfect $12.00

Musica de las Esferas con Los Monjes 10 inch

10 inch 2012/1966-68 new The Mexican Monks also wore hooded outfits and beat the living hell out of the light fantastic. Flailing garage organ that's basically a Jimmy Smith R&B crossover. Stray songs off their 2 eps, plus a couple of bonus tracks. Ritmo de Jazz Barroco Y A-Go-Go!
Electro Harmonix $14.00

Mustafa Ozkent Genclik Ile Elele cd

Mustafa Ozkent Genclik Ile Elele cd

cd 2006/1972 new Ain't hard to figure out why this Turkish dude turns collector heads. Funk beats & outrageous fuzz from an Istanbul cabaret band with extra-fretted homemade guitars, souped-up Hammond organs, and three simultaneous drummers. Plus they put a monkey wrapped up in reel tape on the cover. Yowie.
B Music $15.00

Ofege Try and Love lp

Ofege Try and Love lp

lp 2009/1973 new Teenagers in Lagos whose band was named after the local slang for scaling the boarding school fence to sneak out. In fact, the members of Ofege walked out the front door of St. Gregory's in the morning to go to the studio, but had to sneak back inside at night once their sessions were finished. With a swank 8 track board & session guitarist Berkley Jones in their corner, they soon whipped up a cataclysm of deeply sick fuzz, odd nasal vocals. There are even a couple ballads that are somewhere between Neil Young & Sam Cooke.
Academy $18.00

Paul & Barry Ryan Two of a Kind cd

Paul & Barry Ryan Two of a Kind cd

cd 2008/1967 new Ace twin pop puppets from Leeds who happily & easily ape Hollies, Kinks & Bee Gees styles. Confectionary arrangements with lots of overlapping vocal lines, and even some fuzz thrown in by the studio hacks behind the scenes.
Revola $15.00

Plastic Cloud lp

Plastic Cloud lp

lp 2005/1968 new Probably the best band from Canada ever & a real perennial that you need to have around at all times. Basically the band's in the Electric Prunes mold, but sporting priceless fuzz solos that brapp around all over the place- right through verses, choruses, etc. All original songs & perfectly written slightly surreal, Beatle-cheek lyrics about war machines, smoking cows, fuddy old men. Those dark & velvet soft harmony vocals are really killer too. My personal lifetime in-shower singalong hitlist always has 'Art's a Happy Man' in the top ten.
Lion $23.00

Raionbashi Kollekte lp

Raionbashi Kollekte lp

lp 2006 new Daniel Loewenbrueck from Schimpfluch & Tochnit Aleph. Gurgling, farting, duck calls, burping, dog squeals, and a bit of white noise vomit. Dry sense of humor here that's quite European, but no matter where he lives Lowewenbrueck slobbers all over your head & I am sure glad I got licked. One of the best releases on Hanson. John Wiese guests.
Hanson $12.00

Schimpfluch Gruppe Paris Aktionen lp

Schimpfluch Gruppe Paris Aktionen lp

lp 2009/1996-97 new Rudolf Eb.er & Dave Phillips with a violin player. They set up a ticking kitchen timer, & sit at a table in front of a couple of plates of spaghetti. Instead of just letting it ring when the baking's done, they sound the alarm themselves, throwing their faces into the food and knocking their stuff over. On the flip, they let a nasty sine wave hurt everyone's teeth while they scrape things & hyperventilate. What a fine time! Some men just know pure entertainment.
Tochnit Aleph $23.00

Stella L'Integrale Sixties 2cd

Stella L'Integrale Sixties 2cd

2cd 2000/1967 new Stella was a 13 year old girl who had fun writing songs with her uncle that made fun of the pop music on the radio. They recorded a few sarcastic numbers & mailed them to a local record company. Voila, Stella became the ye ye anti-hero. A resolute tomboy who was critical of everything from blues record collectors who ignored their local folk traditions to old people trying to do the twist. After her record company cut her for making a record inspired by Herbie Hancock (!), she took up the flute & got married to Christian Vander from Magma.
Magic $18.00

Surprieze Zeer Oude Klanken en Heel Nieuwe Geluiden lp

Surprieze Zeer Oude Klanken en Heel Nieuwe Geluiden lp

lp 2005/1970-72 new Severe experimental heaviness, mostly solo, by one Eddy Van Der Meer (who was in an unrecorded Holland beat group called the Slack Gang). Starts out with Randy Holden-style monster blooze and soon deteriorates into delay pedal/harmonica improvs and total freeform guitar wackoff that you could easily mistake for (and this is no hype) a Dead C record. A couple of pals show up here & there to contribute drums or violin, but mostly it's just Eddy and his fraying, acid damaged freakouts.

Teddy Robin & the Playboys The In Sounds of Hong Kong cd

Teddy Robin & the Playboys The In Sounds of Hong Kong cd

cd 2006/1970/1965-69 new Hong Kong's beat bands, only a hairsbreadth away from the GS sound in Tokyo, sported a similar combination of sugarpop fuzz, wild organ, & amphetamine dazzle. Teddy Robin & the Playboys were the best band in town, & even though they clearly started out as pubescent kids barely able to afford their own t-shirts, their frantic beat soon morphed into something psychodaisy crazy. Covers of unusual tracks like Lesley Gore's dark harmonied 'Magic Colors' & the Knickerbockers' 'Lies'.
Underground Masters $18.00

The Eye Popping Sounds of Herschell Gordon Lewis cd

The Eye Popping Sounds of Herschell Gordon Lewis cd

cd 2002/1963-197x new The king of gore schlock was also pretty adept at making sounds that go bump in the night. He wrote all the music for his own movies, and most of the scores of 'Blood Feast' & '2000 Maniacs' are here. Some quotes from the flicks & sfx, plus badly recorded organ, banjo, guitar & a bit of clackety crap percussion. Good times with icky vibes.
Birdman $13.50

Various Arktinen Hysteria cd

Various Arktinen Hysteria cd

cd 2001/1961-73 new Avant garde madness hits Helsinki. Really, the only thing you need to know about this excellent disc is that it has a song made out of burps on it. And if that's not enough to convince you, you should really be shopping someplace else anyhow. But so as not to give short shrift to the rest of the tracks, there's also: mechanical orchestras made out of oscillators & photo-resistors, chicken squawking over piano, plunderphonics, retarded Cream ripoffs, early electronic studio mishaps, nests of commie free jazzers, performance pranksters who like nudity & coffins, dada protests of Finnish presidents or Spiro Agnew, much more. Notes in both English & Finnish, and they basically tell you that Erkki Kurenniemi & Pekka Airaksinen were the hometown champs.
Love $16.00

Various Brass Pins & Match Heads lp

Various Brass Pins & Match Heads lp

lp 2011/192x-5x new Ian Nagoski's 2nd big collection of 78s (following 'String of Pearls') leans toward super-obscure, unheard international sides, but tosses in a couple of well-worn hits to keep you on your toes. And it works. The queen of fado suddenly seems as smooth as Ella Fitzgerald compared to the tearjerking anguish of Macedonian folk singer Vaska Ilieva. The spikes in Jelly Roll Morton piano pieces are only highlighted when stacked up against the cutting & twisting harmonics of George Katsaros' rembetika guitar. Hear Persian classical music yodels, spectral & aching girl harmonies, people pretending to be cows, bereaved Native American wood flutes, and more old sides that will crack open your cold heart.
Mississippi/Canary $13.50

Various Ethiopian Urban Modern Music Vol. 3: More Soul lp

lp 2009/1969-77 new Oh, those smooth crooning singers, dark & funky bass lines, & all intertwined with brass chords that seem to be made of liquid amber. Both traditional & popular music in Addis Ababa employs a modal 5 tone scale that makes each song seem to hang in the air like perfume in the dark. Compiled previously on the Ethiopiques cd series, on Vols. 3, 8, 13, & 14.
L'Arome $15.00

Various Girls With Guitars cd

Various Girls With Guitars cd

cd 2004/1989/1963-70 new Title of this one would lead you to believe that the girl bands are all punkers, but there's plenty of Spectorian drama, frolicking surf beat, & cutie cheerleader charm too. 4 rare Goldie & the Gingerbreads tracks, soon-to-be Ikettes, the wives of Al Casey & Duane Eddy, & even a bit of folk-psych at the end from She.
Ace $15.00

Various Hits and Misses Muhammad Ali cd

Various Hits and Misses Muhammad Ali cd

cd 2003/196x-7x new Somewhere between outsider art and black militant music comes this impressive compilation all about Ali. Whether he's the Louisville Lip, Cassius Clay, or the great Muhammed to you, he went where Malcom and Martin themselves could never go: straight into the heart of white America. Hear the sounds he inspired around the globe, as well as Ali's own incredibly bad rapping. How can someone with so much rhythm in their hands and feet have so little in their mouth? Ali is certainly a mystery of the universe.

Various Midnight Massiera cd

Various Midnight Massiera cd

cd 2008/1967-78 new Wiggiest & best compilation (out of 3, over the last few years) of stuff produced by space-fried French reprobate Jean Pierre Massiera. Chicken squawks, disco beats, slithering prog fuzz, horror movie shocks, samples of 70s African records, tricks of the tape machine, more. Massiera did session guitar work on French pop records in order to fund the construction of his own studio. It seems he mostly got lordingly drunk, went to Quebec for a year, came back & did more of the same, all while inserting echoey laughter & really morbid audio jokes into records wherever possible.
Finders Keepers $15.00

Various Neurotic Reactions lp

Various Neurotic Reactions lp

lp 2007/1965-71 new Fuzzy as can be sitar-n-hammond swirlers from all over Europe. Some lean towards pop & others towards R&B shiver, but the creamy distortion wriggles on every track'll have you coming back to this one again & again.
Crazy Apple Boutique $20.00

Various The World's Rarest Funk 45s cd

Various The World's Rarest Funk 45s cd

cd 2006/1967-75 new From the shit towns and backwoods holes, urban wastelands & high schools they came, ready to do battle with the masses after the model of their heroes. Being a small time funk band was all about hustling and playing as tight as possilble. And oh, the singles that were left behind as a result. That opening organ smash of 'Funky Thing'? It was merely the band's warm up song. They never even meant to record it, but showed up late to a session & the engineer just recorded the first thing they played & then quit for the day. Or check out the combustible power of Soul Excitement's 'Stay Together'. If that doesn't turn you into a buttshaker, you better look at the top of your legs, cause yours is missing.

William Shatner The Transformed Man cd

William Shatner The Transformed Man cd

cd 2004/1968 new Staggering & unignorable interpretations of lsd-Beatles, 60s folk hits, Shakespeare, and other head-clunking musical depreciations that no mere passing of years can make tame. A cornerstone of outsider/bad/cult music that might actually be the most significant artefact of the 20th century. Shatner must've figured that since it worked for his tv character, his album should blast into deeply alien territory, and no better way to do that than to invent the still mostly untapped genre of over-the-top dramatic poesy. Don Ralke ('Kookie Lend Me Your Comb', Lorne Greene, Murry Wilson) pumps brass everywhere just to try to keep up. And if you think this Golden Throat is merely a joke? Go on, just sit and home for an evening & try and figure out Shatner's fractured sense of timing. Either the man cannot count to 4 or he is the Dizzy Gillespie of blurting dumb words.
