Come & see the show while you drink fine drinks, eat tasty foods, or bowl bowling balls. And if you've got thoughts or sounds in your head you can also put your name in the bucket & get 5 minutes to regale the crowd. 50 Dalton St near the Hynes T.

Hiya, everybody.

Title- Label Price
Abner Jay Folk Song Stylist lp

Abner Jay Folk Song Stylist lp

lp 2010/1964-73 new Outsider one man band on banjo, harmonica, guitar, drums & bones. A compilation with earlier tracks than both the previous Mississippi collection and the cd on Subliminal Sounds, including some from Abner's first album. Those who're expecting the crack-damage from later years will be surprised to hear Abner crooning with significant amounts of subtelty here, & much fuller arrangements. It's almost enough to justify Jay's claims that (1) he was 150 years old at age 40 & (2) he was the black Bob Dylan.
Mississippi $13.50

Beatnicks lp

Beatnicks lp

lp 2009/1971-78 new Portuguese psych band that suffered through mandatory army service, exile to Belgium, the local answer to Woodstock, & car accident deaths, & so was only able to put out a few singles. They're all here & blossoming full of minor key psychedelia with snakey little leads.
Past & Present $25.00

Destroy All Monsters Double Sextet lp

Destroy All Monsters Double Sextet lp

lp 2009/1975 new Mike Kelley, Cary Loren, Jim Shaw & a few pals make a wild mud pie out of guitars upon guitars upon tapes upon guitars. And then they throw in some saxes & congas just to keep things spicy. Melted down to cruddy perfection, and yet recorded rather well. The full session from a track which appeared as an excerpt on the Ecstatic Peace box in 1994.

Disco Blaze Jump Back lp

Disco Blaze Jump Back lp

lp 2010/197x new Total wtf record from Nigeria. One copy dug up in 2008 & went for about 800 smackers. Furry, backasswards fuzz guitar, drums sometimes mixed way too high (likely under the influence of late 70s disco 12 inches). There's also a couple of ballads with shaky, fragile femme vocals, but the backing continues to be slathered in wah & effects. As to why the guy on the front has fangs & bats flying around his head? Uh, you got me, buddy. Fans of Chrissy Zebby Tembo, you've found your next stop.
African Sun $25.00

Fongus Guadalajara Rock cd

Fongus Guadalajara Rock cd

cd 2011/1980 new I listen to this every summer, and I never wanna stop. Primitive hard rock that sounds like pure biker burnout from a Mexican band that shortly went metal. Led by bass player Jorge Lopez Diaz, who mostly sings in English. Could have come out a good ten years earlier from some sub-Motorhead mudsnorters in rural England, and stands tall with other left-for-dead protometal like 'Wally On the Road' or Coloured Balls or Dwarr for that matter. Dumb as dick & threatens to devolve into blues noodles constantly, but never does, and by 'La Reyna Del Rock & Roll' has hit a just-us-stoners sound that's sorta hickish & only available when you're sure no one's ever going to hear your album but you.
Vam $15.00

Illustration Apres Ski lp

Illustration Apres Ski lp

lp 2010/1971 new Quebecois soundtrack to a movie of the 'maple syrup porn' genre (wish I'd made THAT up). Sounds run from Brigitte Bardot pop teases to large ensemble funk. There's a bit of wacka-wacka guitar, some slow horn riffs a la Blood Sweat Tears, and even a few minutes of electronic whizbangery. Original album was credited to guy who did some of the pop arrangements Jacques Crevier, but Illustration was unknown as the band on the B side until last year. The film was condemned by a Quebec court for obscenity upon release, which quickly made it a local hit. Reisued by the folks at the primo blog Vente de Garage.
Pluton $15.00

Ivor Slaney Terror Prey lp

Ivor Slaney Terror Prey lp

lp 2009/1978-79 new Primo British horror synths that were never released at the time, by the guy who went on to do cues for Ren & Stimpy. Slinking, crawling buzzes that throb & throb, just like your heart will while your blood leaks out onto the floor. There are a few breaks for folky party songs while the potential victims onscreen get sloshed/show skin, but then it gets right back to the skeeze.

J.J. Light Heya cd

J.J. Light Heya cd

cd 2007/1969 new People sometimes ask me whether I like any country rock or west coast psych records, and when I respond by telling 'em how much I like J.J. Light, they often take it to mean that the answer is no. J.J. sometimes played bass in the Sir Douglas Quintet (as Jim Stallings). He recorded this with the help of several Los Angeles hustlers & Liberty studio stalwarts, including Kim Fowley, Bob Markley (who put up all the money), Joe Osborn, Larry Knechtel, & Gary Rowles of Love. Nicely covers the ground between Byrdsy country rock & Airplane psych, with just enough trashy Fowley-style moves thrown in to keep things from getting pretentious. The lyrics are really the main star of the show though, and they're only a hairsbreadth away from the illiteracy common to song poem or outsider records. Ludicrously stupid diary entries (that don't rhyme- very West Coast Pop Art) about being an American Indian & going off to California to make it big. Wrenching sorrowful moments for dogs, fatherless barefoot kids, & pregnant girls left behind. Twelve bonus tracks from an unreleased 2nd album, including a cover of late 50s native cash-in, Johnny Preston's 'Running Bear'!
Sunbeam $14.50

John Barry Game of Death lp

John Barry Game of Death lp

lp 2011/1978 new Barry shows exactly why he gets to be the Bond guy on this soundtrack to Bruce Lee's 2nd to last movie. Shooting wasn't quite finished when Lee was called away to make 'Enter the Dragon' & suddenly died. The film was chopped to ribbons in order to construct a new plot & add new actors. Barry was part of the Hollywoodization, but you can hardly fault the music he ended up with. Rhythms & horn patterns that mimic his extremely famous themes are faster than usual at first to reflect the action genre & the influence of disco. But soon Barry settles into slower swells & the texture blending that he's so good at. There's even one or two cool synth effects that recall Bernard Herrmann's 'Sisters', and some karate yelling at the end.
Dagored $13.00

Los Salvajes Sus Singles Y EPs en La Voz de Su Amo 2 cds

2 cd set 2006/1965-69 new The Rolling Stones of Spain and a fave of foreign language 60s collectors everywhere. Their complete recordings: 5 EPs, a butload of singles etc. A range of freakbeat, fuzzed up R&B, sitar cheapies, and frilly psychedelia.

M Ashraf/N Akhtar/A Rushdi Dekha Jaye Ga/Uf Yeh Beevian 10 inch

M Ashraf/N Akhtar/A Rushdi Dekha Jaye Ga/Uf Yeh Beevian 10 inch

10 inch 2009/1976 new Here's a more in-depth look at the Lollywood soundtracks that were compiled on 'The Sound of Wonder'. Traditional percussion lines that sprout new stalks every 20 seconds, only to get interrupted by echo or full on bleeping electronics. It all zips around behind a melody every bit as catchy as any from Bollywood, but if anything, a bit more unkempt.
Finders Keepers $12.00

Master's Apprentices Complete Recordings cd

Master's Apprentices Complete Recordings cd

cd 2000/1965-68 new Rural southern Australia happened to kick up a band so churlish, they could've topped the Pretty Things or even the Troggs. Nasal sneers, barbaric scythe cuts of distorted guitar, tight R&B rhythm, and when they started writing their own songs they turned out to have a knack for dark melodies & even a few pop hooks. Mick Bower was their ace in the hole, both as a guitar player & a writer, and it nearly destroyed the band when, at the very entrance of the psychedelic era, he suffered a nervous breakdown, pretty much onstage. Within months, there were riots, lava lamp light shows, and the band underwent a huge lineup change. Not even close to their complete recordings, but everything that came out on Astor including a couple of cuts that hadn't been released previously.
Ascension $15.00

Michel Waisvisz In Tune cd

Michel Waisvisz In Tune cd

cd 2005/1977-00 new Dizzy & sick circuit squeals that stab & whirl like a tornado crossed with a lightning storm from this instrument inventor & director of the Steim electronic music center in the Netherlands. Waisvisz was really interested in physical interaction with instruments, so his famed cracklebox works off the electricty of the body, and he also built an instrument called 'hands' which looks like a pair of Robocop gloves. Waisvisz is also known for being the owner of the sole surviving recording of Kurt Schwitters reading his own 'Ursonate' (He stole it off Dick Raaijmakers' bootleg used for teaching Hague classes). Oddly, Waisvisz eschews record making for live performance, so this is basically his complete works. His wonderful FMP record from '77, with crackle synthesizer, VCS 3, mouth organ, plus five bonus tracks from later that do not disappoint.
Sonig $15.00

Mystic Tide Solid Sound Solid Ground cd

Mystic Tide Solid Sound Solid Ground cd

cd 1994/1964-67 new One of the starter classics in the wonderous world of American garage bands that everybody needs sooner or later. Wild fender jazzmaster through a super reverb amp, and a marked tendency for those minor key heavy songs (all originals, natch) that soon begat the fashion for Hendrix/Cream heaviness in countless bands across the country. They only released a few singles at the time & got into drawing out their songs with feedback pretty early, but the Long Island teens didn't pick up on them, so they just disbanded instead.
Distortions $11.00

Omega 10000 Lepes cd

Omega 10000 Lepes cd

cd 2003/1968 Great plumes of 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' organ, guitar solos that easily mimic the cimbalom melodies of earlier generation. Goulash psych can tend toward the bombastic, but this Hungarian band's first couple of albums are closer to slightly clueless versions of 60s Bee Gees records. They have Dylan-inspired songs, R&B blues rave ups with harmonica, White Album knock offs & excessive drum rolls. 2nd album, 5 bonus tracks.
Hungaroton $16.50

Paul Ngozi The Ghetto lp

Paul Ngozi The Ghetto lp

lp 2011/1976 new Low slung Zambian hard rock that's simply furry with blown out riffs & inappropriate bass-mixing. Paul was the guitarist for the Ngozi Family (for whom Chrissy Zebby Tembo was the drummer). 4th album, right before the Ngozi's '45000 Volts'. Paul is still a well known musician in Zambia, and it's said that around this time, he would play guitar with his teeth when he performed live. About half the songs are in some sort of English-as-a-second-language. In fact, it's likely that all you need to know about this record is that it contains the lyric 'Maybe there's a hippie trying to kill me. His hair is long he looks like a giant.'
Shadoks $35.00

Reuben Wilson A Groovy Situation lp

Reuben Wilson A Groovy Situation lp

lp 2009/1970 new Toetapping hammond funk that's so syncopated it's practically a cubist painting. Lotsa goodtime soul & pop covers that are made brand new again. Perfect record for holing up cozy and having a secret dance party just for one or two. And I must say, if that negative-image rainbow art had been on an album that came out this week, Reuben would be playing at the Whitney by the next one.
Blue Note $11.00

Sam Gopal Escalator cd

Sam Gopal Escalator cd

cd 2000/1968 new 14 Hour Technicolour bad-vibes band led by a Malaysian kid on tabla & featuring pre-Hawkwind, pre-Motorhead singing & bass from drug olympian Lemmy. Great eastern-influenced guitar smoke that's given a poolball-smooth edge by the non-rock drums. Lemmy says he wrote all of the songs on the album (none of which give him a writing credit) during one long meth trip over the course of a few days. Lysergic, badass verison of 'Season of the Witch' that bests the original.
Stable $12.00

Samuel Prody lp

Samuel Prody lp

lp 2009/1971 new Led by Londoner Tony Savva, who auditioned for the Hendrix experience & was beat out by Noel Redding. He subsequently moved down to Brighton & tried to start a heavy acid band named after a shotgun manufacturer (Purdey). Avoiding legislation forced a name shift to the non-existent Sam Prody. Managed & produced by Reg King (The Action), & later by Loog Oldham himself. Beefy, corpulent bleats full of immoderate drum rolls, world weariness & lumbering drug damage.
Acid Nightmare $25.00

Satan and Deciples cd

Satan and Deciples cd

cd 2012/1969 new He's the devil! He's the booger man! The best Kim Fowley record that Fowley himself was completely uninvolved in is this miscreant Louisiana garage novelty by Satan's Disciples (or as the cover artist would have you pronounce it deh- sih -pels). Rumor is that the band is led by swamp-tex guitarist Freddy Fender (he wrote the 70s hit 'Wasted Days & Wasted Nights'). Clearly these fellas want to invent some sort of retardo teen dance that is a crimping cousin to Sam the Sham's 'Wooly Bully'. Instead, they get sidetracked by sheer hustler nonsense, or exceptionally good drugs. Singer's conceit of pretending that he's Satan and then spouting a bunch of soul-fried acid abnormalities is a brilliant gambit that pays off on every single cut. Topics covered include bacteria in eggs, how mountains existed before God made the earth, how to stop thinking about girls who dissed you, & much more. The genius sleazy organ vamps just roll on forever.
Aurora $16.00

Schibbinz Livin Free cd

Schibbinz Livin Free cd

cd 2009/1967 new One of those airy, slightly sad & cottonball soft 60s bands that makes collector spittle start to foam (mine included). Sound is surprisingly American for a band from Argentina, mostly because 3/4 of the band were kids of diplomats. Almost too perfect mix of Beatles/Byrds-worship, playing that straddles the skilled/unskilled fence with great charm. Main songwriter looks to've been an albino kid who later became a classical music conductor. Makes a solid companion to melancholy perennials like Lazy Smoke, Plastic Cloud, Index, etc.
Guerssen $16.00

Serge Gainsbourg Anna lp

Serge Gainsbourg Anna lp

lp 2005/1967 new The missing link between Gainsbourg & Godard is the lovely Anna Karina. Arrangements by Michel Colombier are funky strings & pounding piano (& not the bubbly pop of his 'Umbrellas of Cherbourg' knockoff 'Une Chambre en Ville'), but Serge hasn't quite gone as far as the baroque fuzz funk of 'Melody Nelson'. So the results here are still pretty close to France Gall style ye-ye. Anna proves to be a better singer than Jane Birkin (then again, so's my Mom) & her hard-edged voice (not unlike Marianne Faithfull, who even has a bit part in the movie) brings some R&B legitimacy to the tracks that was desperately lacking in the general French pop scene.
Philips $23.00

Serge Gainsbourg Cannabis lp

Serge Gainsbourg Cannabis lp

lp 2005/1970 new Bouzouki, tight funk, sickly nasty guitar, and mad bad Serge. Gangster movie that starred both Gainsbourg himself as a heroin middleman who kills thugs with the help of a stray acidhead, and Jane Birkin as the innocent suburbanite who helps him when he's down. Arrangements by Jean Claude Vannier (who did the tres famous 'Melody Nelson').

Sun Ra All Stars Band Hiroshima lp

Sun Ra All Stars Band Hiroshima lp

lp 2007/1983 new You can always count on the mysterious mister Ra. Solo pipe organ recorded in Atlanta GA, and a live performance in Switzerland from around the same time. The Art Yard series as a whole is amazing, and this entry- basically 'My Brother the Wurlitzer'- just ups the ante another notch. No mystery why it's titled 'Hiroshima' though- because it drops the mutherfuckin bomb. John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Lester Bowie, Don Cherry, Philly Joe Jones, & Don Moye all appear on side B.

Syn Original Syn lp

Syn Original Syn lp

lp 2011/1965-69 new Sugary UK popsike charmers whose members included the future bass player of Yes & who seemed to make all their songs come out like as Tomorrow's 'My White Bicycle' (ie- awesome). Phased out farfisas, baroque trumpet arrangements, & a grand version of the Attack's 'Created by Clive'. This set expands their 2 or 3 singles with some unreleased studio demos.
Acme $20.00

Tarkus lp

Tarkus lp

lp 2005/1972 new Lima's answer to Zeppelin, formed by two members of Telegraph Avenue while the band was on hiatus. Trashy, proggy, and furiously excessive, with many evil riffs & some pixie-sprinkled breathers on acoustic guitars.
Lazarus $24.00

Tiny Yong cd

Tiny Yong cd

cd 2004/1961-65 new Perfect sugary-pop heaven with just a touch of ye ye. The student often outdoes her teachers with these France Gall/Paris Sisters/Connie Francis imitations by real life Vietnamese princess Thien Ton Nu Thi Huong, whose parents escaped to Paris at the end of the 50s with child in tow. She grew up to pretty much be the Nancy Kwan/Suzie Wong of France. She was also discovered by Henri Salvador, who pioneered that extremely odd & crotchety novelty-twist-rock which I theorize so much about in my spare time (Could go on about how bossa nova really comes from the soundtrack to 'Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter'), and which dominated the French hit parade until Serge Gainsbourg & Jacques Dutronc came along.

Tommy Jay Tall Tales of Trauma cd

Tommy Jay Tall Tales of Trauma cd

cd 2008/1986/1974-86 new Up from the bottom of the ravine of scarred Ohio come some unexpected & wonderful scuzzo jams, seemingly recorded for nobody in leftover 70s basements with too much orange carpet on the walls. Lou Reed damage is definitely in evidence, but sparkle really comes from the fun everybody has tossing in odd elements: conga, bells, autoharp, flute, harmonica, crap mini-organ & charming little shit keyboard riffs. Think I'll be pulling this one off the shelf for a long time to come. Jay was a member of the Jim Shepard/Ron House/Don Howland band Ego Summit, and still is a member of Mike Rep's Quotas. Originally a cassette on Rep's label Old Age/No Age. 6 bonus tracks recorded by the True Believers (another of Jay's bands with Rep).
Columbus Discount $10.50

Various Bombay Connection Vol. 1 2lp

Various Bombay Connection Vol. 1 2lp

2lp 2007/1977-84 new Ok, so maybe you already have versions of 'Jan Pahechan Ho' and 'The Burning Train'. This series is critical nonetheless. Deluxe package, translated info, lush 'n' lovely stills, and the tracks are well chosen enough that every fool can find a few they don't already have. Best of all, they're really well sequenced so that you can experience all of the elements: hysterical string arrangements, electric fuzz, sitar groove, wiggy brass, and crystalline voices of Lata, Asha, Kishore & more.
Bombay Connection $25.00

Various John Peel and Sheila The Pig's Big 78s cd

Various John Peel and Sheila The Pig's Big 78s cd

cd 2006/192x-3x new John Peel's BBC radio show always had a segment where his wife (whom he whimsically referred to as The Pig) played the latest finds from their 78 hunting. This cd is representative of contemporary 78 collecting in general in fact- you'll hear some obscurities & some common titles, dance bands, Okeh blues, sports or Hawaiian novelties, out-of-date vaudeville, and so on. A friendly & in-the-spirit way of remembering Mr. Peel, I say.
Trikont $16.00

Various Poetry Out Loud Vol. 4 lp

Various Poetry Out Loud Vol. 4 lp

lp 1971 SS Klyd (pronounced Clyde) Watkins & Peter Harleman originally met when Harleman was on vacation in Nashville & encountered Watkins working at a bookstore. They became friends, exchanged letters & visited each other even though they lived in different cities, and eventually worked their way up to making recordings along with their wives. Their pulsing chants & whispers, covered in tons of short echo, often imply musical structures without hitting notes proper. And although they don't use lots of extraneous vocal noises, they always work things up layer by layer until there's a purging release of energy. This particular volume has a great tune about a lost biker dude, and another one about a Native American storyteller known as the spider woman.
Out Loud $17.50

Various Poetry Out Loud Vol. 7 lp

Various Poetry Out Loud Vol. 7 lp

lp 1973 new The last of this series to feature all four of the original performers. Two couples, the Watkinses & Harlemans, chant and weave sing-song baskets together. Lots of echo while they take on folk songs, Native American music, church preaching, and lots of other sonic forms that are peculiarly American. There are also guests sometimes, and on this particular volume, French sound poet Bernard Heidsieck shows up with his wife, making little noises and laughing in French in a couple of pieces for Brion Gysin. Heidsieck is thought by some to be the ultimate sound poet, because (if you speak French), he put together lyrics, their sounds, their meanings, and actions that were metaphors for both their sounds and meanings, all together at once.
Out Loud $17.50

Various Secret Museum of Mankind Vol. 5 cd

Various Secret Museum of Mankind Vol. 5 cd

Yazoo $15.00

Various Space Oddities II 2lp

Various Space Oddities II 2lp

2lp 2010/197x new Couple of French techno DJs (from the Tigersushi label) collect their favorite library/production music. Vol. 1 focused on dance/disco, but here on Vol. 2, they go for the big game & delve into the many-mirrored world of distorted psych & synth-prog. Fiendish synth-slingers like Blue Phantom/Jess Franco associate H. Tical appear. Several countries (Italy, UK, US, France) & labels (KPM, CAM, Sonimage) that heavy collectors go crazy for are represented. Ridiculous & skewed visions of nightclub funk, sick little knots of crawling fuzz, and supremely blasted wah effects.
Permanent Vacation $25.00

Wicked Witch Chaos lp

Wicked Witch Chaos lp

lp 2013/1978-86 new Train wreck of backasswards instrumental funkadelic ripoffs with phased whispers, thick brapps of Hendrixified solos. Such mud-covered production that it could easily be mistaken for some sort of sick art collage or an Alan Vega record. Warped minds will be in need.
EM $19.50
