4MG RECORDS (SLOVAKIA)

4MG 009LP

VA: Nova Generacia: Experimental Studio Bratislava Series 2 LP+CD (4MG 009LP) 23.50
It's difficult to overstate the unique brilliance of the (almost unknown) early electronic music composers featured on this compilation of seminal, previously unreleased electronic music from the 1980s. Collecting towering analog modular synth shapes and tones with hypnotic acoustic refrains, Nová Generácia is unlike any other kosmische or early electronic record out there. "In 2015 the 50th anniversary of the Experimental Studio Bratislava (Exs) in Slovakia was crowned with the first-ever release of their music production: the LP Iná Hudba, which sold out almost immediately after the release. Now the following Series 2: Nová Generácia presents the second generation of experimental and musique concrčte composers from Slovakia and concentrates mostly on works from the '80s. These milestone recordings with an unmeasurable historical value have never been released in any format ever and this is only the second time that avant-garde and experimental electronic Slovak composers have been exposed, united on one medium, to the world. While on Series 1 self-made studio equipment and electronic devices was the norm for recordings made in the '60s and '70s in Bratislava, we can see now the use of Western equipment like the Studer 907 with console etc. used by the Nová Generácia in the '80s. This technical development allowed new composition processes and this new equipment generated new and fresh ideas -- on the same footing as avant-garde composers on the other side of the iron curtain like Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Pietro Grossi, etc. Sound art gradually found its firm place in the Slovak culture. A new generation -- Nová Generácia -- of composers who looked for new and different methods of musical expression. All the recordings are strictly analog -- recorded and produced with analog equipment only! A selection of Slovak electro-acoustic composers who follow the pioneers previously released on Iná Hudba: Experimental Studio Bratislava Series 1" --Peter Doggwiler, producer. Limited numbered edition of 500 LPs with CD included. While most tracks have been shortened to fit on the LP, the CD includes all tracks in their full original length. Includes works by Milan Adam?iak, Martin Burlas, Juraj Pospísil, Ví?azoslav Kubi?ka, Rudolf Pepucha, Robert Rudolf, Juraj ?uris, and Svetozár Stra?ina.

ALBUM LABEL (GERMANY)

ALB 008CD

MM STUDIO: Good Star Dubs CD (ALB 008CD) 15.50
This album by Tadd Mullinix and Daniel Meteo originates from a studio session that took place in Berlin in 2007. Mullinix presented the idea of working on a series of rhythms he had made in the style of the mid-'80s early digital age of Jamaican producers (starting with Prince Jammy's "Sleng Teng" in 1985). One very intense week later, Mullinix and Meteo mixed down about 15 tracks of original dub beats that included handmade recordings of guitars, organs, keys, off-beats, and melodies with plenty of echoes, delays, drop-outs, and the vintage character of the Berlin studio. With the exception of two tracks they contributed to compilations released by labels run by mutual friends (Monkeytown and Shitkatapult), Mullinix and Meteo never put these recordings out for others to hear. The two maintained a strong friendship, and eventually decided that it was the right time to release a complete album featuring six of the recordings plus two alternate mixes. Listening to Good Star Dubs in its final form, the music seems to have even more bittersweet deepness, rolling out touching basslines, deep space echoes, and a reductive, intense musical approach. Mullinix lives in Ann Arbor, MI, and has produced countless EPs, singles, albums, and remixes under several monikers including JTC, 2AMFM, and Charles Manier, to name a few. He is probably best known for his advances in hip-hop production as Dabrye (on Ghostly International). Meteo lives in Berlin and runs the record labels Shitkatapult and Albumlabel. He also works with Random Noize Musick, with which he publishes the music of artists such as Apparat, Oval, and T.Raumschmiere. Meteo has released two solo albums and several others as half of the duo Bus, a collaboration with Sun Electric's Tom Thiel.

AVM 057LP

PHOEBE KILLDEER AND THE SHIFT WITH MARIA DE MEDEIROS: The Piano's Playing The Devils Tune. LP (AVM 057LP) 17.50
Phoebe Killdeer and The Shift is the collaboration between Phoebe Killdeer (Nouvelle Vague, The Short Straws) and experimental musicians Thomas Mahmoud-Zahl (SFX, The Nest, Tannhäuser Sterben & das Tod, Von Spar) and Ole Wulfers (Kapaikos, Party Diktator), supported by actress and singer Maria de Medeiros (Pulp Fiction (1994), The Saddest Music in the World (2003)). The Piano's Playing The Devils Tune. is free music in the most emphatic sense; the interplay between the abstract instrumentation on one hand -- which equally recalls genres as diverse as noise rock, bass music, and musique concrčte -- and the intimate, concrete humanity of the sound on the other establishes a sprawling sonic space that gravitates around the haunting vocal passages of Phoebe Killdeer and de Medeiros. The Piano's Playing The Devils Tune. thereby succeeds in combining a decidedly experimental gesture with an urgent, uncanny familiarity and warmth; a precise sense of composition with an almost lavish casualness. Phoebe Killdeer and The Shift do not resolve the numerous paradoxes that mark The Piano's Playing The Devils Tune.; the result is an equally challenging and rewarding album that in fact -- as played-out as this claim may be -- truly defies categorization. Devils tunes. Includes download code.

ALVIN CURRAN

CURRAN 001BK

CURRAN, ALVIN: The Alvin Curran Fakebook Book (CURRAN 001BK) 40.50
2015 release. 300-page paperback book, 11.7 x 8.3 x 1.8 inches. "The alvin curran fakebook is an atypical autobiography in notated compositions, a journey through my musical thought and practice within and without the system, designed and edited by Susan Levenstein. Not just sheet music but a multifaceted compendium, richly designed with photos, writings, and sketches, for anyone to pick through, enjoy, and make their own. The more than 200 works range from raw sonic materials to conceptual musics, fragments, suggestions, itineraries, and completed compositions, containing no secret codes other than my own DNA. They can be played as is, recomposed, looped, arranged, freely improvised on, remixed, layered, spatialized, staged, troped on, or tripped on. A resource and source of pleasure for composers, performers, improvisers, sound artists, scholars, teachers of composition and improvisation, fans, amateurs, terminal avant-gardists, bloggers, buskers, and art book lovers. In some of the 9 sections the music is written out for piano, but the possibilities of instrumentation are limited only by the imagination. The first section consists of sequences, simple strings of single tones that can be used to form looping patterns or as melodic or harmonic generators. The mels were born as pure monophonic melodies but can also be played in quasi-unison by multiple instruments, or overlaid in precise or random ways. The next sections are octaves (rarefied pieces featuring the octave or extended octave interval), music for two parts (just that), and beats (regular and irregular rhythmical patterns that swing, mostly but not only for percussion instruments). The strummz, alternating or rapidly repeated tones or chords, can be used by any chord-capable instrument or ensemble. The 3- and 4-part chorales in choral reefs, for any instruments or voices, bring triadic harmony to another brink. Most of the songs and dances, which were originally applied musics for theater, film, and dance, are presented in conventionally arranged lead sheets. The open aires are large- and small-scale structured improvisations for voices and/or instruments, mostly performed outside the concert hall. This fakebook is a democratic compost heap of musical scraps in the grand tradition of American experimental music. Available for delectation and use by anyone -- without artistic, social, or philosophical limits -- interested in my work or in contemporary musical/performative practices in general." --Alvin Curran

AU 3011CD

CALI, ANDREA: Take the Line CD (AU 3011CD) 18.00
Italian pianist Andrea Calě's trio, featuring Christian Pepe on double bass and Simone Sferruzza on drums, was not formed with the idea of playing standards, but Take the Line follows a route that catches glimpses of past and present, mixing originals and three standards penned by some of the most influential pianists of all time -- Lennie Tristano ("Lennie's Pennies"), Bill Evans ("Five"), and Chick Corea ("Matrix") -- three piano gods who were able to break any rules. The original compositions have a vintage feeling as well; as Calě puts it, "Take the Line is halfway between past and present -- traditional jazz and new tracks blend to create a personal path: the album follows a line somehow, both in its performing approach and in the tracklist, and it sticks to it through both standards and originals." Take the Line is Calě's first project as a leader, and follows his work on Enter by Bologna-based group Bad Uok (Auand, 2012).

BA DA BING!

BING 034LP

COMETS ON FIRE: Field Recordings From The Sun LP (BING 034LP) 19.00
"Newly remastered and back in print on vinyl! Field Recordings From the Sun is the second album from West Coast skull-peelers and daisy-wilting psychedelic stormtroopers Comets On Fire. Joined by an armada of friends and hangers-on -- including Tim Green of the Fucking Champs (who also produced) and Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance (soon to be a permanent member) -- the band erects towering tombs of natural ethereal beauty and pure sonic destruction set above a cosmic freight train of unhinged riffs and jagged grooves. And their drummer is more than happy to perform naked, you don't even have to ask."

WURDEN, MAX: Transit CD (BINE 034CD) 17.00
Max Würden invites you to Transit, an intense ambient trip through lush sonic fields and dark sound tunnels, following his 2015 appearance on Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2016 (KOMP 128CD/KOM 345LP). Atmospheric field recordings invite their listeners to stay a while -- right before the dub beats reliably push the tempo. So get in, take a seat, and let yourself go. Your journey begins here.

BLACKEST EVER BLACK (UK)

BLACKEST 045LP

SECRET BOYFRIEND: Memory Care Unit LP (BLACKEST 045LP) 21.00
Memory Care Unit is a long-form offering of poignant, isolationist machine music from Secret Boyfriend. Eschewing the cryptic and compact song-sketches that characterized his 2013 LP This Is Always Where You've Lived (BLACKEST 023LP), Ryan Martin instead guides listeners through vast interior topographies and nerve-damaged ambiences that comfort and deceive like memory itself. Beginning with "The Singing Bile" -- minimal synth submerged and subjected to an almost oceanic pressure -- the tracks are mostly crude, extended live improvisations, recorded straight to tape. Martin's loose intention was to subtract himself from proceedings and "let the music play itself," but the erasure is not quite complete; on the contrary, each piece feels distinctly authored, and charged with personal significance. The atrophying loops of "Memorize Them Well" broach the elegiac grandeur of Gas and William Basinski, while "Paean delle Palme" summons E.A.R., Af Ursin, and the clammy, opioid exoticism of :zoviet*france:*'s Just an Illusion. The album is largely instrumental, but there are two weighty exceptions: the sprawling, drumbox-driven space blues of "Little Jammy Centre" and the guileless yearning of "Stripping At The Nail." This is electronic pop undressed, unraveled, and mapped onto the infinite wave. Expansive and enveloping, Memory Care Unit's offering of comfort and refuge is difficult to resist. But this amniotic idyll is frayed and haunted at its edges, and ultimately treacherous. The return to innocence it promises may be possible, but the price is separation, alienation, and loss. Housed in full-color reverse-board sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Includes MP3/FLAC download code.

BOXREC 018LP

HAIKAI NO KU: Temporary Infinity LP (BOXREC 018LP) 25.00
180-gram LP. Temporary Infinity is the third full-length album from Newcastle, England-based noise-psych power trio Haikai No Ku. The record continues the nightmarish bad trips that previous albums Sick On My Journey (2013) and Ultra High Dimensionality (BOXREC 006LP, 2014) conjured. The patented wall of gargantuan, mild-altering, damaged feedback from Mike Vest (Bong, 11Paranoias, Blown Out) is again present with the no-nonsense power of drummer Sam Booth (Foot Hair) and bassist Jerome Smith (Female Borstal, Charles Dexter Ward). Haikai No Ku take no prisoners and show no remorse with Temporary Infinity, delivering 40 minutes of warped and disturbed hallucinogenic punishment. Their sound is not for the faint-hearted, but has inspired a cult following among those who enjoy their music twisted. For fans of Bong, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Mainliner, etc. Artwork and design by Pete Burn. Includes download code.

With three unrelenting original productions and a remix courtesy of Housemeister, Penultimate is a confident reminder of Clarke and Mr. Jones's fierce style and abilities.

BPITCH CONTROL (GERMANY)

BPC 188LP

TELEFON TEL AVIV: Immolate Yourself LP (BPC 188LP) 15.50
2016 repress on vinyl. This is the third full-length album by Chicago's Telefon Tel Aviv (Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper), and their first for BPitch Control. Immolate Yourself unites ten tracks with the aim to give the term "electro-pop" a new definition for the year 2009. Although each track has its own story to tell, together they paint a bigger picture that encapsulates the Telefon Tel Aviv sound. Arguably the album's standout track "Helen of Troy" -- a driving, moody and muddled piece, full of '80s aesthetics, vintage synths and low, romantic vocals -- was in fact the last track to be finished, and in a way, marked the climax and formed the basis of the whole work. With this release, Telefon Tel Aviv make a statement that combines popular dance music with their own darker reflections on the electronic sound universe.

BUREAU B (GERMANY)

BB 212CD

QLUSTER: Echtzeit CD (BB 212CD) 17.00
The third incarnation of the legendary krautrock project Kluster/Cluster expands its audience with the contemplative, mature, and intelligent electronic music of Echtzeit. Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock, and Armin Metz are Qluster, founded under the name of Kluster in 1969 by Roedelius, Dieter Moebius, and Conrad Schnitzler. Kluster were responsible for two milestones of electronic music. Schnitzler quit the band two years later, leaving Roedelius and Moebius to carry on as Cluster. When the duo disbanded in 2010, Roedelius continued to fly the K/Cluster flag, this time as Qluster, joined by keyboardist and electronic musician Onnen Bock. The duo again became a trio in 2013, when multi-instrumentalist Armin Metz joined Qluster's ranks. Echtzeit is Qluster's sixth album. After the pure piano work on Tasten (BB 206CD/LP, 2015), the group returns to their electronic equipment with renewed vigor on Echtzeit. Yet Roedelius's favorite instrument, the piano, also receives its due. Large parts of the album were recorded in a church. The principle behind the creative process for Kluster/Cluster/Qluster has always been much the same: musical structures arise from the moment. The pieces on their albums are passages taken from long improvisations that feature a special atmosphere and engaging patterns or figures. Playful experimentation with new instruments and effects or settings is often what leads to the creative spark. Despite their high affinity for experimentation, the term "experimental music" would be misplaced here. Dissonance, noises, or glitch sounds are largely absent. Echtzeit is consistently more harmonious and accessible than the group's previous electronic albums, moving further in the direction previously indicated on 2013's Lauschen (BB 123CD/LP).

BB 220LP

SOLYST: The Steam Age LP+CD (BB 220LP) 23.00
LP version. Includes CD. Sřlyst heralds a new era of digital steam power with The Steam Age, turning his attentions to mechanical aesthetics beyond the ubiquitous binary code. For his third album, Düsseldorf-based Kreidler drummer Thomas Klein, turned to an abandoned piano as a sound source. Tapping, scratching, scraping, plucking; working with the wooden body and steel strings led to the building blocks of a broad sonic spectrum, which Klein then brushed against the grain with his sampler. He then invited these alienated patterns and sequences to dance to the typical Sřlyst percussion groove, forming a hypnotically driving machine-funk. Klein also expanded his drum set; a homemade, electronically manipulated table percussion setup, consisting of utilitarian objects such as a tin can or a wooden board, opened the sonic palette to previously unheard, weightless grooves. This percussive spectrum has been tested and proven live, and spreads a rhythmic gravity that remains accessible despite its experimental basis. Sřlyst is ultimately a project that revolves around a hypnotic rhythmic element, and The Steam Age creates this hypnosis with an intoxicatingly atmospheric quality. The music is interspersed with the marks of time -- dust, patina, rust -- from the world of machines and the mechanical interplay of gears and pistons. Noise, heat, and vapor add to this associative field of inspiration. The Steam Age is an attempt to lend a voice to friction-generating mechanics, motors, and movements that audibly assert themselves against opposing forces and sometimes grind to a stutter. The titles of the tracks -- "Steamfield" and "Atomium," for example -- refer to the overarching concept. With titles like "Nostalghia," they even go so far as to reference cinema, alluding in this case to Andrei Tarkovsky's 1983 work of the same name and taking the chain of associations beyond the music. The mysterious rumbling within, beneath, and above the 11 pieces creates an additional mysterious motoric aura. Yet it also feels familiar, revealing emotional depths that invite the listener to surrender to trust. This music is devoted to a pre-digital machine aesthetic that does not refrain from occasionally toying ironically with the evocation of the analog and handmade. The dark space between the sounds leaves room for anyone to add their own imagination and give in to the endless breath of the machines.

MACCHI, EGISTO: Pittura Contemporanea/Pittura Moderna N.1/Pittura Moderna N.2 3LP BOX (CNAY 10678LP) 75.00
Remastered reissues of three rare '70s gems by Italian composer Egisto Macchi, collected in a deluxe hardcover box with canvas cover. Remastered from the original master tapes. Includes download code. Limited edition of 600 numbered copies. Includes the Pittura Contemporanea LP (originally released in 1975) and Pittura Moderna No.1 and No.2 (originally released together as a double LP in 1975). Macchi was born in Grosseto, Italy, in 1928, and studied composition, piano, violin, and singing in Rome with, among others, Roman Vlad and Hermann Scherchen. He also studied literature and human physiology at Sapienza University of Rome. Beginning in the late '50s, Macchi was active in organizing music, particularly in collaboration with a group of musicians and composers (Franco Evangelisti, Domenico Guaccero, Daniele Paris) to whom he was bound by strong friendship. Along with Guaccero, Paris, and Antonino Titone, Macchi was among the editors of Ordini magazine, which appeared in 1959. With Bertoncini, Bortolotti, Clementi, De Blasio, Evangelisti, Guaccero, Paris, Pennisi, and Franco Norris, he founded the Association of New Consonance in 1960, serving on the board and holding the position of President from 1980 to 1982 and in 1989. He later became involved with the activities of the Settimane Internazionali di Nuova Musica of Palermo. After his part, with Guaccero, in the founding of the Teatro Musicale di Roma, Macchi was one of the founders of Studio R7, an electronic laboratory for experimental music established in Rome in 1967. That same year, he became a member of the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, founded in 1964 by Evangelisti. Macchi's work in the '70s was mainly dedicated to experimentations in library music and film scores. Some of his most noteworthy soundtracks from this period, including those presented here, were released on the Ayna label, which gave him full artistic freedom.

CNPL 804LP

UNDERGROUND SET, THE: War in the Night Before LP (CNPL 804LP) 36.00
First reissue of War in the Night Before by The Underground Set (1971), one of the most important and rare Italian rock albums of the '70s. Limited-edition LP in deluxe sleeve with laminated front and matte back. Includes download code for full album plus six tracks from rare 7"s released in 1970 and '71. The Underground Set were Italian band Nuova Idea, releasing under an assumed name for contractual reasons (they released another cult LP in 1971 as The Psycheground Group).War in the Night Before was produced by Gian Franco Reverberi (whose earlier work was sampled to form the basis of the 2006 Gnarls Barkley hit "Crazy"); Reverberi also composed the album under his Ninety alias. The Underground Set's second album, War in the Night Before is definitely heavier than their 1970 self-titled debut, with great fuzz guitar, organ, Mellotron, and drums. Some riffs in a Black Sabbath style anticipate what would be defined, decades later, as "stoner rock." Psychedelia, beat, rhythm and blues, and progressive rock are all mixed into these instrumental tracks with some polyphonic choirs typical of Genovese prog (particularly New Trolls).

CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)

CCS 100EP

AQUARIUS HEAVEN: Bato Charge 12" (CCS 100EP) 14.00
Brian Brewster aka Aquarius Heaven presents Bato Chargé, his first EP on Circus Company since 2013's Parallela Mundi (CCS 076EP). In Brewster's native Haitian Creole, "Bato Chargé" means "Overloaded Boat"; with the Caribbean rooted in the history of displaced humanity, the groove of "Bato Chargé" takes on a defiant, hopeful tone directly inspired by the traditional percussive music style gwo ka, while lyrically dealing with the pressing issue of refugees escaping conflict, poverty, and famine. "50 Drops" takes on a noirish tone, while the digi-dub skank of "Marie Galante" plays off Brewster's roots in reggae and dancehall.

CLERMONT MUSIC

CLE 014CD

KONATE, OUMAR: Maya Maya CD (CLE 014CD) 12.00
In the title-track of his second album, Malian guitarist Oumar Konaté shouts out to his sister, warning her about gunfire and violence in the streets. Konaté's Maya Maya comes from a country in turmoil. Shifting between acoustic melancholy ("Wango Maben") and hard rock ("Hinchi Hinchi"), Konaté and his power trio are 21st-century West African millennials slammed by geopolitics, shocked by an uncertain future, and stymied by fundamentalism, corruption, and failed economies. Known to friends simply as "le Maestro," Konaté is a guitar genius. Sought after as bandleader and performer, Konaté has played from Bamako to Gao (most Friday nights he can be found in residency at the Club Songhoy in Bamako) and from Europe to New York to Los Angeles. Drummer Makan Camara is perhaps the best in West Africa. Bassist Cheick Siriman Sissoko is also a well-known singer. These three are a power trio on the level of Cream or Band of Gypsies. The songs tell a story of hope for peace and normalcy despite the seemingly insurmountable challenges.

TOBAR, RICARDO: Collection Remixes Part One 12" (COR 134EP) 14.00
Ricardo Tobar's first remix 12" comes with two stunning rearrangements of his work by Canadian minimal techno hero Fairmont and tech house grandmaster John Tejada. Fairmont's remix of "Angora" has a strong Border Community vibe -- dark but at the same time pushing and hedonistic. Tejada's remix of "Invierno" is deeper than deep, with a pushing Detroit and KMS vibe. It's almost like a lost all-time techno and house classic.

NU GUINEA: The Tony Allen Experiments (Afrobeat Makers Vol. 3) LP (COMET 072LP) 23.50
Nu Guinea present the third volume of the Afrobeat Makers series, reworking original magic drum patterns from Afrobeat master Tony Allen to create nine of electronic, psychedelic jazz-funk. The Nu Guinea duo, which formed in Naples and is based in Berlin at the time of this release, arose out of jam sessions melding synthesizers with instruments for a handmade sound that aims for a genuine quality over perfection. Their sound is constantly evolving, and they're always open for collaborations with other musicians; they've previously collaborated with Berlin-based singer Wayne Snow on their 2015 World EP (Tartelet Records). The Tony Allen Experiments is co-released by Comet Records and Early Sounds Recordings.

COMETS ON FIRE

COF 001LP

COMETS ON FIRE: Comets on Fire LP (COF 001LP) 19.00
"The first full-length release by psycho-psych freaks Comets On Fire, available again on vinyl in a newly remastered edition! Comets On Fire delivers dark and damaged acid rock served in a crude and blown-out speedball of Blue Cheer, High Rise, James Williamson and a shit-faced-drunk Roxyera Eno. Methamphetamine and Schnapps-drenched lullabies take it straight into the sonic shitstorm, shifting from 4/4 power rock to imploding free form. Echoplex-treated tales tell of drug-crazed space travelers, graverobbers in love and cosmic cannibals. The album was recorded on 4-track with the levels in the bloody red in a basement and garage in Santa Cruz, California."

Cologne-based Chocolate Garage Production deliver a remix of "Voodoo," while DJ, producer, remixer, label owner, and club promoter JD Twitch (Optimo (Espacio)) remixes "Revely." NOVOS BAIANOS/DOM SALVADOR: Juventude Sexta E Sabado/Uma Vida 7" (COS 114EP) 8.00
"When Greg Caz and Deano Sounds teamed up to create The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul they created a collection of vintage Brazilian music that stretches across the scope of funk, soul, and psychedelic. Co-compiler and Brazilian music aficionado, Greg Caz says: 'Without necessarily having a central theme other than funky nuggets from the first half of the 70s, we believe this compilation displays its own particular sense of logic, and that these songs ultimately all sound fantastic together. Regardless of one's familiarity, or lack thereof, with artists like Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, Os Incríveis, Toni Tornado or Celia, the material on these 45s speaks its own truth and justifies their inclusion here. Many of these were originally available as singles, while others were taken from albums, but all are guaranteed to find their way into many DJ boxes and playlists.' The stunning 45s from this set will now be available for individual sale. The series wraps up with a split 45 featuring Novos Bainos haunting Jeventude Sexta E Sabado on the A Side -- on the flip, the cinematic sounding Uma Vida, the 1971 cut from Dom Salvador E Abolicao"

DE COSTA, FRANKLIN: Tentacles 12" (CURLE 054EP) 12.50
Franklin de Costa, a Curle label regular, presents more organic deep house tracks that are out of the ordinary, highlighted by the fantastic bassline of "Tenctacles." "Needles" is a little harder and has something of a UK vibe; "Silkworm" is a work of even, solid techno.

ABSTRACT MATTERS: Uncertain Future 12" (CYN 092EP) 12.50
The Abstract Matters duo returns after releasing the hottest title on the Cynosure label in 2014, their self-titled debut EP (CYN 096EP) -- with regular play from legends like Derrick May and Danny Tenaglia. The follow-up is sure to land the similar crates and rock dancefloors from Ibiza to Detroit. This EP delivers a combination of raw and rock-solid techno grooves that border on the familiar or old school but maintain the contemporary sensibility that makes a proper techno 12".

DIAG 025CD

NOT WAVING: Animals CD (DIAG 025CD) 14.50
London-based Italian artist Alessio Natalizia aka Not Waving presents Animals, the project's most versatile album to date. It's an unruly yet emotive bender taking in dancefloor-mauling new beta and endearingly beery post-industrial synth music. Animals harnesses the wanderlust of Natalizia's spate of self-released albums and records for Ecstatic and Emotional Response but dials up the wildness, spitting out a careering sequence of tracks that feel as warped, deep-raved, and giddy as a night out in the city where they were forged. And make no mistake, although Animals occasionally bites hard at the business end of the dancefloor, this is Diagonal's most pop album yet, with Natalizia's songwriting sensibility conjuring moments of tenderness and beauty to offset the manic strobe lighting and dropping sweat. Opener "Believe" is one such moment, a twisting synth workout that bounces along over rock-ist live toms. The tie is loosened on "Head Body," as Not Waving unleashes a raging kosmic EBM showpiece that morphs across six sprawling minutes. Next up is "24," the album "hit" that delighted and destroyed dancefloors throughout 2015, with clear influences from Front 242 and Ancient Methods. The shunting "Gutsy" and whopping industrial stress-test "Work Talk" buckle down like mutant Powell cuts, whereas "I Know I Know I Know" and the thrashing EBM-pop of "Face Attack" run The Sound of Belgium (LMFLF 287CD/296LP, 2015) through a distinctly Diagonal filter, all smart edits and unruly arrangements. The great strength of Animals, though, lies in how Natalizia marries the clammy peaks of contemporary club music with oddly emotive runs into acidic Canterbury pop (as on "Tomorrow We Will Kill You") and cyborg despair (see "Punch") before the bittersweet "They Cannot Be Replaced." In short, this is Not Waving laying down some of his most sophisticated songwriting and finding an entirely appropriate home for his own distinctive sound. Animals is Diagonal's sixth artist album, following releases by Russell Haswell (including DIAG 024CD/LP, 2015), The Skull Defekts, Shit & Shine (DIAG 012CD, 2014), and Death Comet Crew (DIAG 006LP, 2013). Art by Diagonal whiz Guy Featherstone. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. CD version includes two bonus tracks.

VACCINA, LINO CAPRA: Antico Adagio CD (DS 027CD) 20.00
2016 repress. Before an aberrant idea of progress and workaholic ethic ludicrously sped up our daily lives, even in the hectic city of Milan it was possible to "play slowly" -- with little or no pressure, simply following the path your art was showing you. After a classic artistic beginning and an experimental stint with Aktuala and other brilliant fellow musicians (Franco Battiato, above all), Lino "Capra" Vaccina, near the end of the '70s, recorded Antico Adagio, an amazing work that anticipated countless others in the field of so-called "new age" and world music, yet remains at the crossroad between those genres and experimental and electronic music. Apart from a few violin parts and the extraordinary vocal lines (sung by Vaccina himself and Juri Camisasca), Antico Adagio is an album fully built on percussion. At the same time, it's the farthest thing from the typical idea of percussion. You won't find a single trace of African or primitive beats: instead, this is a collection of rather long, subtle and thoughtful compositions, crafted with vibraphones, marimbas and gong. Together they create a work which will remain unique -- both in Lino Vaccina's discography as well as in a more general sense. The edition is comprised of two individual and separate LPs: Antico Adagio (DS 027CD/027-1LP) and Frammenti da Antico Adagio (DS 27CD/027-2LP), which features previously-unreleased material from the original 1978 sessions. The deluxe CD edition (Antico Adagio, DS 27CD) contains both albums. From Kieran Hebden/Four Tet's liner notes: "There are records I have found in my life that I was almost wishing existed before hearing them. Recordings with new combinations of sound and atmosphere I knew could be wonderful to me if I ever discovered them, and then on discovery the sound was even better than I could have imagined. I felt this way when first hearing music by Alice Coltrane (Journey to Satchidananda) and Don Cherry (Organic Music Society) and I also felt it with Antico Adagio. The combinations of the rhythms and melodies resonate with me in a very clear way and I feel transported by this music every time I hear it. I first heard this record when it was posted on the Mutant Sounds blog a few years ago and am very happy to see it get another release. The music is timeless and brilliant and maybe there are other people out there wishing for a sound like this too, who will now have chance to find it."

ZEITC 016LP

DI DOMENICO/JIM O'ROURKE, GIOVANNI: Arco LP (ZEITC 016LP) 25.50
2016 repress. Starting with this release (despite the fact that its catalog number numerically precedes ZEITC 017CD), Die Schachtel switches its Zeit Composers series to the vinyl format and begins opening up to international artists besides the usual Italian suspects. This LP features the collaborative effort of Belgium-based composer Giovanni di Domenico (of Italian origins) and avant-everything master Jim O'Rourke. A long composition for strings and electronics, Arco is a piece for sustained tones and drones, vividly immersive and almost physical. The subtly shifting tones, the way the overtones interact with each other, the evolution of the piece, are all impeccable, much in the vein of acclaimed composers like Catherine Christer Hennix, Éliane Radigue, and David Behrman, although with a "warmer" soul. It explores the antinomy between stillness and movement, building toward a hypnotic (and rewarding) aural experience. In Giovanni di Domenico's words: "Arco is born out of two necessities, strongly interrelated: 1) creating a sonic space where the concept of waiting (patience?) can turn into form, and 2) doing this together with Jim O'Rourke, a musician who finds in form and its use his true greatness; The structure of the composition is quite simple: it is based on a cell of four repeated notes (the 'DNA' of the piece), forming a melodic/harmonic texture which slowly freezes into suspended, levitating chords, in which the passing of time itself becomes a sort of harmonic extension, and in which the strings and the splendidly rich sonic palette of the electronics fuse into the true essence of Form." Each LP contains a 90x30cm-long tri-folded silver-and-black offset art print designed by Dinamomilano. Edition of 350. Giovanni di Domenico: string score; Jim O'Rourke: electronics. Ananta Roosens and Benoit Leseure: violins; Nicole Miller and Jef Durdu: violas; Marine Horbaczewski and Jean-Philippe Feiss: cellos.

DIRT CREW (GERMANY)

DIRT 095EP

WAZE & ODYSSEY: Go Go Go/We Go Home 10" (DIRT 095EP) 14.00
Waze & Odyssey return with their first release on Dirt Crew since 2013's Please Don't Dance EP (which featured an excellent Detroit Swindle remix). Go Go Go/We Go Home follows the duo's 2015 hit "On the Downlow." "Go Go Go" is a filtered house banger that hearkens back to mid-'90s house. On the B-side is the deeper and more electrified "We Go Home," which delivers some nasty breakdowns and maniacally pitched ascending lead.

DUB MIR (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)

MIR 100737LP

SCIENTIST: Heavyweight Dub Champion LP (MIR 100737LP) 22.00
2016 repress; LP version. Scientist was only 20 years old when, working with fellow producer "Junjo" Lawes, he came up with this 1980 stunner, a sinuous groove party with cartoonlike special effects (a lot of bongs and boings like pans hitting one another, blips and squeals that sound like a Pac-Man game). All the "song" titles are references to boxing (a motif that Scientist was obviously mining for all it was worth), and all are great individual bits of dub sound that cohere into a meaningful whole. As it says on the jacket, "This ya a youthful sound fe come mash y'down."

EL PARAISO RECORDS (DENMARK)

EPR 029CD

SORENSEN, NICKLAS: Solo CD (EPR 029CD) 16.50
Solo is the first solo album from Papir guitarist Nicklas Sřrensen. While there are certain similarities with the oeuvre Sřrensen has created with Papir, it quickly becomes apparent that this is something quite different. Throughout Solo, the Copenhagen native explores his primary instrument, the guitar, as a generator of otherworldly sounds, as a compositional tool, and -- perhaps most importantly -- as a transmitter of pristine, cascading melodies. There's a peaceful, savory quality to the album that indicates a musical maturity. With help from Papir's rhythm section as well as Causa Sui's Jonas Munk (who also recorded the album in El Paraiso's studio), Sřrensen has created a wide, shimmering sound that seems to allude to a multitude of different styles and traditions. Considering that Sřrensen is best known as a hard-rocking guitar player with a knack for improvisation, it's perhaps surprising that his inclination for pattern-based minimalism and blissed-out ambience dominates throughout this set. This is the kind of album that rewards repeated listens, constantly revealing new layers in the architecture of the sound. Solo is an affable, slow-burning album in which each component is given its own space and place to gently unfold and work its magic in the mind of the listener.

EPM MUSIC (NETHERLANDS)

EPM 013EP

CURTIN, DAN: Galaxies Merging EP 12" (EPM 013EP) 12.50
Dan Curtin's musical quest began in the early 1990s, when, from his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, he began producing innovative sounds of every variety. His impressive discography dates back to 1992, when his first releases on Detroit's 33RPM Records and Belgium's Buzz motivated him to launch his own Metamorphic Recordings. He opens the Galaxies Merging EP with the sci-fi techno of the title-track, all trampling beats and dappled synth work. "Mind Sweep" delivers high-tech funk with a deep, soulful undercurrent, before the unpredictable late-night workout "To Modify" closes the EP with a bold wash of erratic electronics.

ESP-DISK

ESPDISK 4075LP

LAST EXIT: Iron Path LP (ESPDISK 4075LP) 23.00
LP version. All-star quartet Last Exit garnered its reputation with a string of unrelentingly forceful concert recordings in which it pushed the energy style of free jazz to its limits. When the group went into the studio, though, a very different sort of album emerged -- very different not only from all their other output, but even from anything else ever heard from anyone at that time. Because of that, when it was released in 1988, some fans and critics didn't know what to make of it. This was, in a way, understandable, because Iron Path was so far ahead of its time that perhaps only a quarter of a century later, in 2015, is there an audience prepared for this album's pioneering hybrid of abstract heavy metal, unsettling ambient music, and free improvisation. Back in 1988, "darkwave" hadn't yet been conceived, much less named and niched. The brutal sonic assault of Last Exit's live albums is not banished; it lurks below the surface on Iron Path, sometimes allowed to break through for a moment of stark contrast. But the unremitting density of texture heard in the quartet's shows is stripped back in favor of more subtle and varied textures, sculpting an atmosphere of moody brooding and sinister suspense. And, of course, the studio also allowed for far greater sonic clarity, putting these virtuoso players in a setting that shows off their masterful command of myriad timbres. In a world that has since become accustomed to hearing Earth, Pelican, Blut Aus Nord, Aphex Twin's Ambient Works sets, and Oöphoi, and artists such as Whote who explore the overlap between them, Iron Path can finally get its due, and an audience schooled to appreciate what it offers. Sonny Sharrock, guitar; Peter Brötzmann, saxophone; Bill Laswell, bass; Ronald Shannon Jackson, drums.

FAUXPAS 019LP

RISING SUN: The Lamentations Of Rising Sun 2LP (FAUXPAS 019LP) 23.50
Rising Sun is the production alias of Berlin-based Steffen Laschinski, a producer and curator of multiple record labels (including Kristofferson Kristofferson, Styrax, and Millions Of Moments). The name of the project and the music are both inspired by Specter and Damon Lamar's productions on the Tetrode Music label. Laschinski's reserved deep house recalls Larry Heard and early-'90s house, while also drawing on influences from soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, Detroit techno, and ambient. More a crossover work than music of one specific style, Laschinski's productions retain unplanned moments alongside the ritual of the Rising Sun process. Includes two vinyl-only tracks, "Pressure" and "Remix." Includes download code.

RUSSELL, BRUCE: Howling and Instability at High Volume Settings LP (FTR 219LP) 18.50
"If ever there was an album by NZ's great Bruce Russell whose title carried the essence of his genius, this is it. The words come from the manual of the amp that Bruce uses to create his special brand of guitar havoc, and its wording could not be clearer. Naturally, Mr. Russell takes great delight in pushing the poor thing beyond its stated limits as often as possible. The results almost always possess a strange majesty. And so it is here. Originally issued as two-thirds of a CD included in the mythical No More Driver Call Me box (a never-commercially-available collection of Bruce's solo music, video work, and writing), one of the things most curious about this LP is how close to the side's titles Bruce chooses to hew. On 'Howling,' the guitar tends to get into the upper registers and maintain a bellering edge, often on several levels at once. Certainly, there are plenty of skritches as well, but the concept of howl-as-howl seems to be borne out in a major way. Concomitantly, 'Instability' has a sonic roof that is continually collapsing on itself. Twin-voiced amp-hump no more sturdy than yurt in a hurricane. Or maybe I'm just projecting. Suffice to say, it's a blindingly fine album, both howling and unstable in all the right places" --Byron Coley. Edition of 400.

FLASH 1003CD

CARTER, NICK: Abstracts and Extracts CD (FLASH 1003CD) 17.00
Nick Carter describes this remarkable album as "the culmination of a slightly obsessive idea I had about sound." Built around heavily distorted piano backed with bass, drums, and touches of guitar and sitar, its six tracks are frequently dreamy and hypnotic (reflecting Carter's belief that "repetitive music radiates an unusual ethereal depth"), but can also be unnervingly intense. Recorded in Bristol, England, in 1978-'79, it was pressed in a tiny run aimed at generating major label interest; when that failed to materialize, Carter left music behind. This is its long-overdue first reissue, and comes with background notes and images.

VA: Songs the Bonzo Dog Band Taught Us: A Pre History of the Bonzos CD (FLASH 1006CD) 17.00
Irreverent and anarchic, the Bonzo Dog Band were one of Britain's best-loved 1960s groups. But their eccentric brand of musical humor was not without precedent; they drew much inspiration from so-called "novelty foxtrot" records of the 1930s, which they lovingly learned from 78rpm discs. This compilation presents the original recordings of all such songs that they recorded and performed live. Painstakingly remastered, it comes with detailed notes, rare images, and an introduction from the great "Legs" Larry Smith, core Bonzo Dog Band member. Includes tracks by Leslie Sarony, The BBC Dance Orchestra, The Savoy Havana Band, Jack Hylton & His Orchestra, Percival Mackey & His Band, The Rhythmic Troubadours, Hal Swain & His Band, Albert Whelan, Jack Hylton's Jazz Band, Whispering Jack Smith, Noël Coward, Bebe Daniels & Ben Lyon, Jack Payne & His Dance Orchestra, Jay Wilbur & His Band, Billy Cotton & His Band, The Continental Five, Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers, Ray Starita & His Ambassadors, Jay Whidden & His Band, Roy Leslie, Jack Hodges the Raspberry King, and Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians.

BIG EYES FAMILY PLAYERS, THE: Oh! LP (HAM 013LP) 25.00
The Big Eyes Family Players, a loose collective based around Sheffield, England-based artist James Green, present Oh!, their first album since Folk Songs II (Static Caravan, 2012) and their first album of original material since 2009's Warm Room. The group, who have previously collaborated with the likes of James Yorkston, Alasdair Roberts, and Rachel Grimes, recorded Oh! as a slimmed-down five-piece with a sound that veers more toward the '60s psychedelic pop of the likes of The United States of America and Broadcast than it does toward the instrumentals or folk songs for which Big Eyes are perhaps best known. Oh! consists mainly of vocal-led songs written by James Green and Heather Ditch, with themes ranging from family dysfunction to hauntings and fictional historical events. The centerpiece of the album is the dramatic "Joyce," which concerns the true story of Joyce Vincent, who was found dead in her apartment in London three years after she died. Another highlight, the wonderful "Song for Thirza," is the only cover on the album -- a little-known song by Lal Waterson about a girl who lived with the Waterson family, rescued from the workhouse in the 1950s. The sound of the album is perhaps best described as psychedelic pop, with fizzing organs and droning synths, flutes, reverbed guitars and bass, and playful drums swirling around Ditch's delay-soaked vocals. Oh! was recorded in Sheffield, England, and produced by Sheffield music-maestro Dean Honer (I Monster, Eccentronic Research Council, The Moonlandingz). It features contributions on viola and musical saw from Aby Vulliamy (The National Jazz Trio of Scotland, Trembling Bells, Aidan Moffat). Artwork by Yorkshire, England-based design and print artist Laura Slater. Includes download code. Edition of 250.

OWL SERVICE, THE: His Pride. No Spear. No Friend. CD (HORN 005CD) 14.50
His Pride. No Spear. No Friend. is the third full-length album from English alternative folk collective The Owl Service, their first new material since 2010's acclaimed The View from a Hill. This album sees the band eschewing both their psych-folk beginnings and the more polished, classic folk-rock sound of The View from a Hill to serve up an album of songs mostly from the British folk tradition but without folk instrumentation, and with little in the way of folk sensibilities. Instead, the band strived to create a different kind of modern folk album, placing these familiar songs in unfamiliar settings. Whereas previous albums unashamedly wore their influences on their sleeves, giving significant nods to the likes of Fairport Convention, Martin Carthy, Anne Briggs, Shirley Collins, and Trees, this time the starting point was the sounds of '90s US post-hardcore and early post-rock bands, in which The Owl Service were immersed while arranging these songs. The end product is a unique reimagining of 21st-century folk music a world away from any of their contemporaries.

2013 remastered reissue; originally released in 1999. Yann Tiersen studied violin and piano as a child, and made a name for himself as a star pupil at his local music conservatory in Brittany, France. He eventually began training to be a conductor, but rebelled against his classical training and, inspired by the likes of Joy Division and The Stooges, played guitar with several local post-punk-influenced bands during his later teenage years. He later became known for his whimsical, melancholy soundtracks and solo work, but also released the rock-oriented Tout Est Calme in 1999, featuring French band The Married Monk.

CHAPELIER FOU: Deltas LP (IDA 098LP) 14.50
2014 release. Chapelier Fou presents his third album, Deltas. This album crystallizes all the elements which made Chapelier Fou's personality, from electronic music to beautiful violin melodies. But it also opens up the realm of possibilities, with his variety of more diversified emotions and arrangements which are more intense than on his previous releases. If Chapelier Fou was once considered a "sound handyman," now he's becoming a certified composer with his compositions, arrangements or harmonies. Deltas will not open up on first listening, as the field of explorations is huge and experimentations are limitless. But immersion will be there. Here, complexity means fascination. And we have to say that the result is unique, as he is supported by its will for experimentation that cannot leave the listener cold. Each track is a wonderful and fascinating paradox, where the obvious beauty of the melodies challenges unexpected uncommon structures.

2015 expanded reissue; originally released in 1996. After two albums that did not reach a wider audience -- C'était un Lundi Aprčs-Midi Semblable aux Autres....... (1993) and Le Goűt du Jour (1994) -- Diabologum, a group of four 25-year-old inhabitants of Toulouse, released #3, an album that was to go down in history for its originality, radical nature, and pure talent. French magazine Les Inrockuptibles called it "a firebomb in the world of French rock," and put Diabologum, who were pretty much unknown at the time, on its cover. The album captivates with its daring combinations, contrasts, and transitions and its uncompromising experiments with structured formats, reinventing rock grammar while standing as a coherent whole. A strange, disturbing, hard-hitting, and elusive mix of incisive and visceral electric guitars, dissonance, piano, synth and guitar melodies, varied rhythms, eclectic samples, and sounds of an unknown nature.

IDEAL 134LP

O'MALLEY, STEPHEN: Dread Live LP (IDEAL 134LP) 23.50
Stephen O'Malley deploys the second in a trio of documents of his improvisational prowess following his crushing Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs, which was brought forward in tribute to the November 2015 Paris attacks and released in December 2015. The minimalist electric guitar mantra Dread Live was performed at Studio Helmbreker in Haarlem, Netherlands, on September 6, 2013, and recorded by Mathijs Ton, with technical support by the great Tos Nieuwenhuizen, using a hypercardioid ribbon mic with immaculate '70s valve amp backline. The set was programmed as part of the opening of the Dread -- Fear in the age of technological acceleration exhibition at De Hallen Haarlem, curated by Juha van't Zelfde. It renders 40 minutes of Sunn O)))'s O'Malley at his most depressive and heavy and is something akin to a slow-motion baptism by waves of tarry, blackened harmonic distortion, holding the listener under its sinking pressure. How low can you go? O'Malley knows. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 700 hand-numbered copies.

INTERNATIONAL FEEL (URUGUAY)

IFEEL 051LP

CFCF: On Vacation LP (IFEEL 051LP) 19.50
180-gram vinyl. CFCF is Montréal native Michael Silver, a man with a gift for a melody who has been making music since he was 12 years old. He continues to deliver timeless music -- which Pitchfork has described as "a strong case for how much unexpected magic can be found in the ordinary" -- with his debut release for International Feel, On Vacation. The second in International Feel's mini-album series, On Vacation is an album inspired by places and spaces -- some imaginary, some real. Silver's keen sense for melody allows him to switch genres throughout this release, though he remains in organic, analog territory. "It's really gentle and lowkey and I hope that people will not take it too seriously," explains Silver. "It's a kind of jazzy affair." Mystical opener "Sate Padang" sets the scene with a mixture of digital and organic sounds perfectly held together by tight melodies and lush sounds. "Arto" is an homage to one of the great Japanese composers, Seigen Ono. Acoustic guitar and piano play harmoniously alongside a conga beat and a sumptuous accordion. Ambient piece "In the Courtyard" precedes "Pleasure Centre," which showcases Silver's love for the underappreciated side of the '80s synth sound. The B-side opens with the stunning "Chasing," on which acoustic instrumentation swoops in for a beautiful run through a flowing melody. "Fleur Laisses dans un Taxi" is a nod to Paris in the spring, while "Lighthouse on Chatham Sound" evokes a late afternoon by the sea before the contemplative closer, "Vermont." On Vacation finds Silver in full stride, open to music and melody and not hindered by genre, time, or space.

JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)

JMAN 078LP

LEE, ALAN: An Australian Jazz Anthology LP (JMAN 078LP) 23.50
LP version. There are few Australian originals in jazz, but vibraphonist Alan Lee surely ranks among the best. Australian jazz is and always will be an interpretation of the American art form, but throughout his long career Lee has ploughed his furrow undaunted; as he puts it, "What I want is the fire! Whether it's John Coltrane's 'Blues Minor' from Africa/Brass or 'Backwater Blues' by Leadbelly, I want the emotion, the gut wrenching pain, the cry from within!" A musician and bandleader who cut a number of jazz sides for small independent Melbourne labels from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s, Lee has always searched for this fire, evident in the broad styles he's covered throughout his career. From '60s soul jazz to the deep modal sounds of the early '70s and cross-genre experiments exhibited in his chamber jazz, the tracks included in this anthology -- the first of Lee's music -- were recorded by various incarnations of Lee's band and are taken from three albums recorded in 1973 and 1974 -- Lee's sole albums as a bandleader and collectors' items in their own right. The deep modal version of "Love Song" and Freddie Hubbard's perennial spiritual jazz standard "Little Sunflower" are both taken from the 1973 LP The Alan Lee Jazz Quartet. The 1973 album Gallery Concerts 1973, which was recorded for Bruce Clarke's jazz sub-label Cumquat Records, provides us with a fierce electric-jazz version of Igor Stravinsky's "Dance of the Adolescents" from The Rite of Spring, plus the plaintive chamber jazz of John Lewis's "Sketch" as well as two tracks featuring vocalist Jeannie Lewis -- "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" and the beautiful "Bailero." Completing this compendium is a cover of the Milt Jackson-penned "Enchanted Lady" taken from the 1974 follow-up recording for Jazznote, The Smilor. This anthology is filled out by Lee's stories, including his correspondence with fellow vibraphone player Gary Burton on how to achieve advanced extended techniques for the vibraphone (resulting in pages of technical diagrams) and a story about travelling across the US to purchase an original 1940s Deagan Imperial vibraphone from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra "just to get that Milt Jackson sound." There are moments of deep introspection and intellect in Lee's playing; this is emotional music that contains and shares a common spiritual oneness, seeking the thrill Lee experienced after first listening to Lionel Hampton and The Benny Goodman Quartet.

KARAOKE KALK (GERMANY)

KK 089LP

DAKOTA SUITE & EMANUELE ERRANTE: The North Green Down 2LP (KK 089LP) 32.00
Limited edition of 300. Includes double-sided insert and download code. After their collaboration on Dakota Suite's remix project The Night Just Keeps Coming In (KK 051CD, 2009), Chris Hooson of Dakota Suite asked Emanuele Errante to work with him on a project composed for the death of his sister-in-law. The powerful result, The North Green Down, was originally released on Lidar in 2011 as a limited CD, and is long since sold-out. In 2016, Karaoke Kalk makes this heartfelt and poignant album available again and for the first time ever on vinyl, including one additional previously unreleased vinyl-only track, "Instincts Reduced To Silence." The two musicians' distinct styles complement and accentuate each other perfectly for a simply mesmerizing sound. Hooson brings classical arrangements of acoustic instruments and a strong jazz influence, while Errante lends delicate elements of ambient electronic processing to the mix. "No Greater Pain," for example, starts with and bases itself around a pulsating ambient drone, while other tracks drift between divinely plucked classical guitar, lilting piano melodies, and ecstatic string and cello parts, all of which weave together to fabricate truly captivating and emotional soundscapes. The album also features the marvelous cello of David Darling, who featured extensively on Dakota Suite's The Hearts of Empty (KK 059CD, 2011). Hooson's Dakota Suite bandmate David Buxton also contributes recording and instrumentation to the spellbinding soundscapes. The North Green Down comprises almost 80 minutes of fragile pianos, guitars, cello, and subtle electronic elements. It is cinematic, hypnotic, and simply beautiful, sure to appeal to fans of minimal and ambient music and artists such as Ólafur Arnalds and Max Richter. "In August 2009, Johanna and I took what we didn't know then would be our last holiday with our sister-in-law, Hannah. . . . During that walk with Hannah through the north green I felt there the beginnings of the music you hear on this record. . . . I sent the basic piano and guitar pieces I had recorded at home to Emanuele. I had previously bought his records and felt in him a sympathetic soul who would feel the weight of this music and make it more fitting for the purpose I had in mind, namely a suite of hymnal pieces for Hannah. Hannah was a beautiful, selfless and nurturing woman. This record is for her." --Chris Hooson, September 2010

POST INDUSTRIAL BOYS: Unintended CD (KK 090CD) 15.50
Despite the project's name, Post Industrial Boys is basically one man, George Dzodzuashvili aka Gogi. He's a musician from Tbilisi, Georgia, and is part of the Goslab artist collective together with TBA/Natalie Beridze and many more. With Unintended, Post Industrial Boys return for the first time since 2006's Trauma (MAXE 012CD), the second of two albums on Thomas Brinkmann's Max Ernst label. Unintended is an intimate and reflective collection of songs produced in a unique style -- part pop, part electronica. The album opens with "Strange," and there is without question a strangeness to the Post Industrial Boys sound throughout the album. But it's a strangeness that soon becomes as familiar as an old friend with repeated listens. A title like "It's Me" makes it clear that the album is a very personal statement from Gogi. Most of the songs on the album were inspired by lyrics written by Gogi's wife from 2007 to 2013, making the album almost a kind of a family diary. The only song with Georgian lyrics is "Naked," which takes its words from the 19th-century Georgian poet Vazha-Pshavela and features the actress and singer Mzia Arabuli, who comes from the mountain region and sings in the style of Georgian folk songs. "Passenger" is a tale of transit and travel; its intense use of repetitive melodies and vocoders conjures images of the monotony of everyday commuting. Other songs like "Through," "Sometimes," and "Raindrops" make clever use of an ambient backdrop that creates a trance-like mood while abstract melodies, beats, and lyrics subtly crisscross the audio field. Sinister melodies envelop "Directions," creating a mysterious atmosphere. The album closes with its title-track, a sweet little ballad of gently strummed acoustic guitar and lilting piano melodies. Unintended is a perfect album for anyone into emotionally charged, inspiring left-field electronic pop, fusing the accessibility of pop melodies, lyrics, and structures with obscure and challenging sound design. In addition to their precisely crafted production, the songs on Unintended are characterized by the quaintly monotone delivery of George Dzodzuashvili's vocal performance -- all the more expressive for the fact that many words are half-spoken rather than sung. The lyrics are pensive, with a marvelous daydreamy quality, while at the same time still rooted in everyday experience. It doesn't take long for the Post Industrial Boys sound to seep into your soul, and when it does you will cherish the songs on Unintended forever.

REED, JOHN CALE & NICO, LOU: Le Bataclan, Paris. Jan 29, '72 2LP (KH 9008LP) 31.00
2016 repress; Double LP version. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve. To the surprise and delight of their growing fan base, in early 1972 rumors began to circulate that Lou Reed, John Cale, and Nico would be performing together again. In fact they only played one show, at the small Bataclan club in Paris on January 29th. Thankfully, a soundboard recording was made, preserving the superb concert for posterity. On it the trio performs a cross-section of Velvet Underground and solo material in acoustic settings, offering a unique opportunity to hear familiar songs by three of rock's most enduring cult artists in a fresh style. It makes its long-awaited return to vinyl here, together with background notes and two rare tracks culled from a rehearsal held in London shortly before the gig.

KOMPAKT (GERMANY)

KOM 276LP

KOLSCH: 1977 2LP (KOM 276LP) 19.50
2016 repress. Gatefold double LP version featuring 6 of the tracks from the 13 track CD. Speicher staple and renowned club juggernaut Kölsch debuts on Kompakt with the full-length 1977, an extraordinary collection of club gems that introduces his earlier masterpieces to exclusive new material. Here, the epic, the rad, and the snappy find themselves under one expertly-crafted groove, making this album an essential choice for both home clubbers and floor hounds. Your new best friend is here and it's a record. Despite the name and despite Kompakt's well-documented love for Cologne's beer, Kölsch isn't a local and he didn't label himself after the famed brew. Even with a much-acclaimed print run and a series of venerated live appearances under his belt, award-winning Danish producer Rune Reilly Kölsch has to regularly duck quizzical questions about his heritage. 1977 isn't a simple "best of" hack job, however: with new crackers "Basshund," "Bappedekkel," and "Eiswinter" lighting the fire, Kölsch doesn't need to worry about future impact. And then there's a cut like the emotive "Oma." The sweeping "Wasserschutz" and a Trojan horse called "Felix," originally intended to be an album outro of sorts. But then someone pushed the button and the transdimensional portal sprang to life.

KRANGLAN BROADCAST (SWEDEN)

KLN 006EP

LOKATT: Karg EP 12" (KLN 006EP) 14.00
Techno pop from the woods of Sweden, courtesy of producer duo Lokatt. Dark, dreamy, and danceable. Drum machines, Mellotron, synthesizers, and Nina and Johanna Piroth's characteristic vocal harmonies conjure floating, barren landscapes influenced by the sisters' background in the indie pop scene. The Karg EP follows Lokatt's well-received 2015 debut single "The Hill." Co-released by Harald Björk's Kranglan Broadcast label and Lokatt's Oma Gusti Records. Artwork by Stina Göthlander.

BJORK, HARALD: Kris & Konflikthantering I/III 12" (KLN 007EP) 12.50
Vinyl only. Limited edition of 300. Printed sleeve with artwork by Malin Gabriella Nordin. Harald Björk put together this work while taking a course called "Kris & Konflikthantering," which translates to "crisis and conflict management." Björk created Kris & Konflikthantering in semi-unconscious conditions -- all recorded on the Studer B67 master tape recorder, the heart of the Kranglan Broadcast studio. This first EP of the three-part release contains three tracks with traces from Björk's 2015 Fritids EP on Studio Barnhus (BARN 036EP), as well as a remix by Petter Nordkvist under yet another moniker.

KYNANT RECORDS (GERMANY)

KYN 002EP

BLACK SAND: Desert Island EP 12" (KYN 002EP) 16.50
180-gram vinyl. Limited edition of 275. The Desert Island EP by Black Sand (Max Durante (KYN 001EP, 2015) and his fellow Italian DJ Datch) begins with the restrained "Abyss" and "Black Sea," building a groove out of tense layers of underwater atmosphere and a tough low-end. The B-Side pushes the sound harder; the creeping drone of "Dead Sea" is tailored for DJs to gradually build a room's energy, while "High Tide" is peak-time material noticeably inspired by the '90s. Mastered by Neel at EnissLab, Rome; pressed at Optimal Media, Germany. Packaged in a house sleeve. All artwork designed by Christopher Honeywell.

LEAF (UK)

BAY 013LP

YOKOTA, SUSUMU: Sakura 2LP+CD (BAY 013LP) 24.00
"There is no immediately apparent unifying sound to The Leaf Label. The imprint has a magnetic attraction to artists operating on the fringes, to startling hybrids and mercurial fusions. One finds Leaf in the places where electronic music, classical, jazz, pop, folk and rock meet -- the places where the sparks are flying. In recognition of 20 years of loyal service to releasing beautiful noise, Leaf is reissuing ten landmark albums in limited editions. Most of the selected works have been out of print on vinyl for many years, and the choices have been driven in part via an online poll. They are spread across the years and begin to reflect the length, breadth and consistent quality of the label's output in that time. The late Susumu Yokota's 2000 ambient classic Sakura takes on a new significance in light of his passing earlier this year. There have been heartfelt tributes to his work from all corners of the music world, and it seems fitting that this beloved album, one of the label's earliest and best-selling releases, be made available again."

BAY 022LP

ASA-CHANG & JUNRAY: Jun Ray Song Chang LP+CD (BAY 022LP) 20.00
"A heady brew of Eastern percussion, babelogues of spoken word, horns, toys, flute, mandolin, and analog synthesizer drums, Jun Ray Song Chang is the wildly exotic, playful and lovingly created 2002 album from self-taught tabla / bongo guru Asa-Chang. Hallucinogenic and beautiful."

BAY 023LP

MURCOF: Martes + Utopía 3LP+CD (BAY 023LP) 27.00
"Of particular interest is the reissue of Murcof's 2002 masterpiece Martes. Across three discs, it's resequenced with the original tracks from the subsequent Utopía CD, plus three rarities from the Martes era, in new, updated artwork."

BAY 051LP

A HAWK AND A HACKSAW: The Way the Wind Blows LP+CD (BAY 051LP) 20.00
"The Way the Wind Blows, the incandescent third album from A Hawk And A Hacksaw, was partly recorded in a remote Romanian village with members of the justly admired Balkan folk group, Fanfare Ciocarlia. Songwriter Jeremy Barnes (drums, accordion, vocals) and Heather Trost (violin) joyously and romantically romp through traditional sounds, interspersing passionate musical duets with exuberant brass band stomp."

NEON JUDGEMENT, THE: TV Treated (Dave Clarke Remix/Radio Edit) 7" PIC. DISC (LL 100EP) 18.00
One very last Neon Judgement release: a limited 7" picture disc featuring a remix of The Neon Judgement's "TV Treated" by Dave Clarke, the baron of techno, who asked the band if he could remix the track. The Neon Judgement were a huge inspiration for Clarke, as they were for many artists. Clarke's "Gothic Remix" is backed here with a special radio edit of "TV Treated," one of the biggest hits in the band's long, rich history.

LL 028-7

YOUNGE PRESENTS GHOSTFACE KILLAH, ADRIAN: Blackout/Resurrection Morning/Life's A Rebirth 7" (LL 028-7) 10.00
"In 2015 Adrian Younge provided Ghostface Killah with a sonic backdrop equal parts hip hop and Italian horror, as much Ennio Morricone as sweet boom bap. Select singles from the project will now be available, presented here Blackout b/w Resurrection Morning/Life's A Rebirth in a full color jacket. 12 Reasons To Die II is vividly brought to life with the help of Younge's never-endingly evocative and unique brand of cinematic, psychedelic soul. The music -- on which Younge himself plays upwards of 10 instruments -- was recorded strictly on analog tape, to bring out the true grit of the '70s era that provides the Twelve Reasons backdrop. Younge's work of course sounds great -- as presented here, it looks as good as it sounds with the Italian horror inspired graphics splattered all over the full color jacket."

M-PLANT

MPM 021EP

HOOD, ROBERT: Protein Valve (Re-Plants) 12" (MPM 021EP) 12.50
2016 repress; Robert Hood is back with new edits of "Protein Valve," originally released on M-Plant in 1994, the year of the label's inception. "Protein Valve" helped set the standard for his M-Plant label becoming synonymous with a stripped-down, tough and rhythmic raw sound that many artists still try to emulate. The original Protein Valve EP is a classic in the annals of techno, which still gets played today and sounds as fresh as it did some 20 years ago. Nevertheless, Robert Hood takes an introspective look back and delivers these three incredible new edits! Focusing on the bass elements, these fresh versions keep the M-Plant ethos at their core.

Gorrie delivers three phenomenal original productions, with a remix by the one and only Jonas Kopp.

MENTAL GROOVE (SWITZERLAND)

MG 105LP

KAZANCHIS + 1: Dinkenesh LP (MG 105LP) 25.50
Trio Kazanchis got together by coincidence in 2009 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's musical hotspot while playing jam sessions in Melaku Belay's Club Fendika and Mulatu Astatke's own African-Jazz Club before touring Europe in underground venues and related festivals. The original line-up is Jeroen Visser (NL, baritone sax & Farfisa organ), Mesele Asmamaw (ETH, krar & vox) and Fabien Duscombs (F, drums). Endris Hassen (ETH, masinqo) joined the group in 2013 (he's the +1). Kazanchis +1 plays songs with an Ethiopian origin, either modern or traditional, and a European '80s touch, combined with free energetic improvisation using highly-developed Ethiopian pentatonic scales, from slow and trance-like to up-tempo, energetic moods. The band's choice of instruments presented itself on European stages as very elastic, nicely melting together, and also as a challenging combination -- all-in-all successful. Mesele Asmamaw, described as the Jimi Hendrix of the electric krar (the 6-string Ethiopian lyre), has become known as an innovator & virtuoso of his instrument in Ethiopia. Fabien Duscombs, the quicksilver drummer from Toulouse lays down the perfect grid for Mesele to play his syncopating accents. Jeroen Visser glues the two tightly together, providing bass and chords with his Farfisa organ/synth, or challenges their sounds with his baritone sax. Since the summer of 2013, the amazing masinqo-player (a one-stringed violin) Endris Hassen has become a full member of the group, completing the sound and surprisingly even reinforcing the trio-feel.

MIE (UK)

MIE 037LP

COYPU: Floating LP (MIE 037LP) 25.00
"In most European cities you can find many canals that have been covered. Often though, underneath the cement and our frenetic lives, they still run. Constantly flowing water, unknown to us. Maybe we feel it. Maybe it influences us and we do not know it. It would be nice to lie down in between a 19th Century tram track among the windows of stores up for rent and wine bars offering refuge and put an ear to the cobblestones, like they used to do in the prairies to hear if a train was coming. I am sure that we would hear the sound of the Coypu. A constant and distinctive movement. Floating, their first album, is this: the electric landing on the muddy banks of that which has made Rock'n'Roll a gloriously celebrated thing. The Blues of a dried up Mississippi, the sonic violin of the Velvet Underground, Krautrock as an architecture of 'endless' sound. Vertical chords and botanic drones: something happening beneath us and which you hope never abandons us." --Maurizio BlattoCoypu is the musical project born from the European-American friendship between Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Badgerlore, 200 Years, Rangda), Paul Beauchamp (Blind Cave Salamander, Almagest!), Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo (Blind Cave Salamander, Almagest!, (r), Larsen), and Daniele "Lo Dev Alm" Pagliero. Subtle electronics and drones, psychedelic guitar lines, and the melancholic sounds of the Appalachian dulcimer and musical saw merge into desertic, watery, and evocative soundscapes. Floating, Coypu's full-length debut, follows their 2015 debut EP, Of Tails and Whiskers. Gatefold sleeve. Edition of 500.

MINIMAL WAVE

MW 058LP

OPPENHEIMER ANALYSIS: New Mexico 2LP (MW 058LP) 29.00
2016 repress. "Minimal Wave proudly presents a newly remastered deluxe double album of archival material by pioneering '80s minimal electronic duo Oppenheimer Analysis. Oppenheimer Analysis was formed in London, England, in 1982 by Andy Oppenheimer and Martin Lloyd. Their first meeting though was at the 1979 World Science Fiction Convention in Brighton. They quickly became good friends, sharing an interest in the work of David Bowie, electronic music, and early synthesizer bands such as the Human League and Soft Cell. They also shared a love of old science fiction movies and 1950s graphics and comic book imagery, and a fascination with post-World War II propaganda, the politics and aesthetics of the Cold War, and the social impact of the atomic bomb. Over the next few years Andy and Martin frequented the growing club scene, including Studio 21 on Oxford Street, and became involved in the developing Futurist and New Romantic style sub-cultures. During this period Martin recorded as Analysis, both alone and with David Rome of Drinking Electricity. They released their first single, Surface Tension/Connections on David's Survival label in 1981. In 1982, Oppenheimer Analysis began writing and recording together at Feedback Studio in Battersea, and performed several times at The Bell, Islington, the 1983 World David Bowie Convention in Hammersmith, the Starzone Birthday Party at Camden Palace, the 1984 European Science Fiction Convention in Brighton, and other live venues. Their first demo tape and 12-song New Mexico cassette were sold at gigs and by mail-order, and were reviewed in Melody Maker, Sounds, and Soundmaker. For the years to follow, Oppenheimer Analysis became recognized among electro-music aficionados as a pioneering duo that influenced countless other bands during the club and home-recording era of the early 1980s and beyond. Their cassettes became massively collectible. In 2005 they re-formed with the release of a self-titled four-song 12" EP of selections from the New Mexico cassette, including 'Cold War' and 'The Devil's Dancers.' This marked the first release on Minimal Wave. Now in 2015, we're happy to present the entire New Mexico collection, newly remastered and cut to vinyl for the first time ever, to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. This first edition of 1000 copies is pressed on deluxe 'nuclear' style black-and-white 160-gram vinyl and housed in a glossy gatefold silver-and-black printed sleeve, featuring all the song lyrics on the inside of the sleeve."

Mo's Ferry, Roland Europe, and Dapayk present the winner of the "Transformation Remix Contest," winner Ricky Ambilotti, whose remix of Dapayk Solo's 2015 track "Transformation" (MFP 078EP) got most of the votes in the final public voting. A reworked version from Dapayk Solo's minimal techno beard-o alias Marek Bois features on the B-side, completing the perfect follow-up to Dapayk Solo's acclaimed 2015 album #nofilter (MFP 079LP).

Stereociti aka Ken Sumitani presents his second album, Lost Land. Like its predecessor, 2011's Kawasaki, Lost Land contains some of the finest Japanese deep house and techno out there. It's a journey into Stereociti's vast, ever-changing soundscapes, narrating the story of a lost land. Each of the ten songs contributes to an in-depth picture of a forgotten city that vanished from this earth long ago, exploring even the tiniest details through remarkable sound design. Lost Land is an album that will find a place at home, in the club, and in the heart. Hand-silkscreened sleeve. Limited edition.

PEKLER, ANDREW: Cue LP (MUSCUT 004LP) 22.00
First vinyl edition of Andrew Pekler's Cue, originally released as a CD by Kranky in 2007. Reissued by the Kiev, Ukraine-based Muscut label (founded by Dmytro Nikolaienko) under exclusive license from Kranky, Ltd. Limited edition of 300. From Andrew Pekler: "Typically, library music albums were not available to the general public but were marketed directly to film, TV and commercial production companies. Judging by the information provided on the record sleeves, these consumers of library music were assumed to have little interest in the identities of the individuals who actually wrote and played the music, the musicians' names often being relegated to the very small print. Instead, it appears that the functional aspects of the product were of foremost importance; the persistently generic names of the tracks and their descriptions, durations and suggestions for their usage are the ubiquitous features of library album packaging. At the same time, the name of the production studio itself is given the kind of front cover top-billing usually reserved for a performer or composer (or to brand names on boxes of corn flakes)."

NTCLTD 006EP

NOISEMAKER, THE: State of Matter EP 12" (NTCLTD 006EP) 12.50
The Noisemaker debuts on Natch with the State of Matter EP, a deep, dense four-tracker driven by groovy and propulsive rhythms. "State 1" begins in the depths as a virtual paranoid entity excavates its way down to the lower grounds. "State 2" is a restless groove, a compound of impetuous drums and ear-itching interferences. A texturized whirlwind of broken beats and acid trips gets involved in "State 3," giving the B-side a ritualistic vibe that closes with constantly detuned melodies in "State 4," in which stomping percussion throws up an obsessive synth-line. Four sonic burners from the Italian producer.

TADEO: Chronicles of the Future 2LP (NONSERIES 021LP) 25.00
Spanish producer Miguel Sar has been a purveyor of tough, no-nonsense techno since the mid-2000s, running his own Cyclical Tracks label and appearing on other imprints like Token, Semantica, and Psyk's Non Series. Sar returns to the latter for Chronicles of the Future, his second album and first since 2008's Contacto (NET28 002CD/LP). Includes download code. "I started this album simply writing a script, I think it is important that an album has a continuity that gives the album a cinematic sense, basically this must tell you a story. For this time I chose the topic of: 'the development of human evolution in the future.' I find it interesting to experiment with the sound and textures of classical music, but not with the idea of how to adapt a techno track with classical instruments, I prefer writing scores from scratch for each of the instruments and adapting synthesizers as part of that orchestra. I think that all this brings us an epic ingredient, that from the beginning I think it was the link between classical and techno music. Besides the classical music, I have been experimented with different kinds of recording and synthesis, also I created almost all the sounds from zero. I have included different fx sounds, developed it with techniques as morphing and overlapping layers of sound, all to setup the tracks with a complex and rich textures, but with care to not obtain something pasty. I worked a lot with 'the space' in the tracks, trying to place each sound in a particular three-dimensional situation with clean reverbs, also the feeling of 'tension' is highly significant in this work, but ultimately the most important thing has been to build on a script written -- as I said before -- so that the narrative is a fundamental part of the album."

PRICE & THE KEYSTONES, CONNIE: Wildflowers: The Expanded Version CD (NA 5139CD) 16.00
"Connie Price and the Keystones are the Los Angeles musical group whose 7" releases kick started the Now-Again label way back in 2002 -- and whose Wildflowers album was the first full length release by a new band on the label. Way back then we called it 'cinematic soul' and wouldn't you know it -- the originator of the style, Lalo Schifrin, himself agreed. Seriously. Read the quote above. It's real. Wildflowers contained contributions by the Heliocentrics' producer/drummer Malcolm Catto and Poets of Rhythm/Whitefield Brothers/Karl Hector & The Malcouns founder/guitarist Jay Whitefield. Now that Now-Again is the home to the previous ensembles and more (artist albums by Seu Jorge, Chop, Fabiano do Nascimento and MRR-ADM have come out on the label), it seemed fitting to revisit where it all started, with an expanded version of the album that kick started it all. Includes previously unreleased Malcolm Catto tracks and tracks previously only available on out of print vinyl"

Interpreted for this single by a bunch of good people, such as Deetron (jazzy-ish housey-ish), Bullion (main vocal funky Latin house mix... or not. It's vocal though), Mungolian Jetset (acid mambo deep in the forest, quattro formaggio pizza style), and the mysterious Tangoterje (dub mambo especial)." MINGUS, CHARLES: Tijuana Moods LP (LSP 2533LP) 12.00
Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1962. "Bassist/composer Charles Mingus at the time said that this was his greatest recording, and it certainly ranks near the top.... It has often been said that Mingus forced and pressured his sidemen to play above their potential, and that is certainly true of this project. Altoist Shafi Hadi (who doubles on tenor) is in blazing form on 'Ysabel's Table Dance,' while trumpeter Clarence Shaw (who was praised by Mingus for his short lyrical solo on 'Flamingo') sounds quite haunting on 'Los Mariachis.' Trombonist Jimmy Knepper and drummer Dannie Richmond made other great recordings, but they are in particularly superior form throughout this session, as is the obscure pianist Bill Triglia. Completing the band is Ysabel Morel on vocals and Frankie Dunlop on castanets.... this stirring music belongs in every jazz collection, for it does represent one of Charles Mingus' finest hours." -- All Music Guide

VOORN/JORAN VAN POL, JORIS: Sonic Highway 12" (REJ 047EP) 12.50
In summer 2014, Rejected label cofounder Joris Voorn took part in a Red Bull Studios Amsterdam project in conjunction with the Mysteryland festival, where he was to select a rising Dutch talent with whom to work on a new composition. Voorn chose Joran van Pol, the gifted Minus signing who also debuted on Rejected in 2015 with Perpetuous. Inspired by the project, Voorn invited van Pol to work on a release, and "Sonic Highway" was born. Voorn's mix features a bouncing melody while van Pol rolls out a much deeper, moodier, but urgent version with his mix.

BAND, THE: The Weight: Live... Chicago '83 CD (RV 2025CD) 17.00
Seven years on from their iconic Last Waltz in San Francisco, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel reunited, performing (with backup from the Cate Brothers) to rapturous receptions in the US and Canada. Manuel in particular was in better form than he'd been for years, as the band tore through a selection of classics from their back catalog, as well as the new track "Java Blues" and numerous oldies they'd played during their long apprenticeship. This remarkable set at the University of Chicago's Mandel Hall on July 1, 1983, was broadcast on WXRT-FM at the outset of their reunion, and is presented here in its entirety with background notes and images.

BROWNE, JACKSON: Together Again... Live Syracuse '71 2CD (RV 2031CD) 23.00
Having been an active musician since 1966, by 1971 Jackson Browne still hadn't released a record, but was regarded as one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation. This magical performance was broadcast on WNEW-FM as he opened for Bonnie Raitt in the intimate setting of the Jabberwocky Cafe in Syracuse, NY, on March 27, 1971. Later that year he signed with David Geffen, toured with Linda Ronstadt and Joni Mitchell, and recorded his debut album, making this set a magical document of a major talent just before stardom beckoned. It's presented here in its entirety with background notes and images.

BOOKER T. & THE M.G.'S: Green Onions LP (RUM 2011112LP) 20.00
The house band at Memphis's legendary Stax Records, Booker T. & the M.G.'s played on some of the most legendary and unforgettable soul recordings in history. Originally released in 1962, the title-track of their debut LP Green Onions is arguably the most recognizable piece of instrumental pop and soul ever to be released; an absolute stone classic of a jam, with Booker T.'s organ at the fore. In addition to being a classic group, Booker T. & the M.G.'s were one of the first soul and rock groups to have both white and black members, and understandably their music is often associated with the Civil Rights Movement that was going on all around them in the American south of the 1960s. Essential American originals from Booker T. & the M.G.'s.

ERIKSEN TRIO, ESPEN: Never Ending January CD (RCD 2173CD) 17.00
The Espen Eriksen Trio, after worldwide tours that further refined their signature sound, present Never Ending January, their third album. Beautifully recorded and mixed at Propeller Studio in Oslo, the album focuses on typically Scandinavian elements such as folk music, melancholia, and the deep woods. In that respect it's fair to say that they belong to the same tradition as Tord Gustavsen and the late Esbjörn Svensson, even Jan Johansson in some respects, but without really sounding like any of them. But it's also fair to say that the trio's less-is-more approach is in stark contrast to many contemporary piano trios, with shorter tunes and a strong focus on melodic content. Pianist Espen Eriksen's musical background is varied, ranging from pop music to jazz and the church organ. He has played with top Norwegian jazz musicians like Bendik Hofseth, Mats Eilertsen, and Thomas Strřnen, and was the pianist, arranger, and composer for singer Christina Bjordal for three years leading up to her international debut, Brighter Days (Universal, 2006). Bassist Lars Tormod Jenset lived and worked as a musician in Copenhagen for seven years before relocating to Norway in 2007. He is also a member of Hot n Spicy (Denmark/Norway), Bendik Giske Kvintett (Norway), and Rodent (Iceland). Andreas Bye is one of Norway's most-requested drummers in jazz and pop. He was a member of Bugge Wesseltoft's New Conception of Jazz and has played with John Scofield, Joshua Redman, John Taylor, Dhafer Youssef, Nils Petter Molvćr, Hĺkon Kornstad, and many others.

ELEPHANT9 WITH REINE FISKE: Silver Mountain CD (RCD 2174CD) 17.00
It's not often a jazz band takes the big step from the club scene to a 1300-capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band. Often cited as Norway's best live band -- surely quite rare for an instrumental band -- they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles. On this, their fourth studio album, Elephant9 once again join forces with Reine Fiske, the Swedish guitarist from Dungen and The Amazing, for an epic slice of mindblowing modern rock 'n' jazz prog psychedelia. Silver Mountain is their finest album so far, a work on which all the parts fall into place. The core trio is still Stĺle Storlřkken, Nikolai Hćngsle Eilertsen, and Torstein Lofthus, three of Norway's finest musicians. Guest Reine Fiske brings another dimension to the band and is now so integrated that he might as well be considered a permanent member. Silver Mountain contains five tracks between 10 and 22 minutes; four originals, plus the most spaced-out version of "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" you're likely to encounter. Stĺle Storlřkken (Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Prophet t8, piano) is widely considered to be the most inventive keyboard player from the fertile Norwegian jazz scene, a reputation founded in his work with bands and musicians like Supersilent, Humcrush, Motorpsycho, Terje Rypdal, and countless others. Nikolai Hćngsle Eilertsen (bass, acoustic guitars) is a long-time member of popular rock group Big Bang as well as Kjetil Mřster's quartet Mřster!. Torstein Lofthus (drums) is a versatile drummer who has done a lot of session work and played in jazz, soul, and rock bands, most notably Shining. Reine Fiske (electric and acoustic guitars) is a member of Dungen and The Amazing and has guested on two Motorpsycho albums. He is also heavily involved in the Swedish record label Subliminal Sounds.

JONO EL GRANDE: Melody of a Muddled Mason CD (RCD 2175CD) 17.00
Jono el Grande is a self-taught composer, musician, conductor, painter, and prankster and remains an outsider on the far margins of the Norwegian experimental music scene. He released his debut mini-album Utopian Dances in 1999, a collection of absurdist instrumentals recorded at home using not much more than a workstation synth. 2003 saw the release of Fevergreens (RCD 2031CD), an album that drew upon classic progressive rock, film music, easy listening, and a variety of pop idioms and featured a nine-piece orchestra. The Wire noted that "the vitality of his writing keeps just the right uplifting balance between sweetness and acidity" and called it "a pleasant surprise." His following album, Neo Dada (RCD 2084CD/RLP 3084LP, 2009), was a masterstroke, brimming with creative ideas, odd turns, weird combinations of sounds and instruments, complex time signatures, and a healthy dose of pure musical joy, all mysteriously sugared with melodic hooks. The following albums, Phantom Stimulance (RCD 2106CD/RLP 3106LP, 2010) and The Choko King (RACD 107CD/RALP 307LP, 2011) were mostly made up of re-recordings, "lost" songs, pre-Fevergreens sketches, and various odds and ends, making Melody of a Muddled Mason the natural successor to Neo Dada. Some of Jono el Grande's finest songwriting can be found here, and he has refined his already considerable arranging skills to perfection -- just listen to "Bach's Beach" and the title-track for evidence. Jono el Grande lists movements like Rock in Opposition and the Canterbury scene and artists and composers like Frank Zappa, Stravinsky, Magma, Henry Cow, and Gentle Giant as sources of inspiration. With his releases and stage shows he has now established his own signature, with mature compositions, refined arrangements, improved guitar playing, and the introduction of subtle vocals.

MOTORPSYCHO: Supersonic Scientists: A Young Person's Guide to Motorpsycho 2CD (RCD 2176CD) 21.00
The first-ever Motorpsycho anthology, released in conjunction with a 2015 retrospective exhibition at Rockheim, Norway's national museum of pop and rock music, in the band's hometown of Trondheim. For the first anthology since the band's formation in 1989, there are as many possible track selections as there are fans, and the band's selection for Supersonic Scientists: A Young Person's Guide to Motorpsycho will likely incite much discussion. Roughly containing one song from every studio album proper since 1993 as well as a couple of outsiders, this serves as an excellent introduction to newcomers and latecomers, but should also be of great interest to fans. Helge "Deathprod" Sten has remastered all the tracks from the original masters, and the non-chronological order makes for a natural flow and an intriguing trip through the Motorpsycho universe. This might even help shed new light on the music and make those who know these recordings well evaluate them anew, and perhaps even love them more. If that isn't enough, the anthology includes an up-to-date family tree, made official for the first time. All the songs were written, played, recorded, and produced by various Motorpsychos in various combinations with various other people in various studios at various times (see family tree and/or the original releases for details). In addition to the 15 studio albums these songs are selected from, Motorpsycho have released multiple EPs, live albums, and collaborative albums, and done projects that are as important to the band as the albums this music is taken from.

ROY THOMPSON AND THE MELLOW KINGS: 20 Days CD (STAGO 072CD) 15.50
Roy Thompson and The Mellow Kings is a rockin' rhythm and blues band from France. The six musicians are all experienced veterans from the rockin' scene, well versed in roots, blues, and rock 'n' roll. Olivier Laporte aka Roy Thompson had previously led Canada-based band Roy Thompson & His Royal Acadians, which he founded in 2003. Laporte returned to Europe in 2005, after tours of Canada, the US, and Europe, and founded The Mellow Kings in 2010. The band's influences range from rhythm and blues to rockin' '50s/early-'60s sounds. The Mellow Kings' live repertoire includes songs by artists such as Ike Turner, Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker, Larry Williams, Little Richard, Young Jessie, Junior Watson, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Freddie King, Johnny Otis, and Guitar Junior, as well as many self-penned tunes. In 2012 they released their first album, Back on Tracks, on the Spanish label Sleazy Records, which they followed with performances at all the big festivals, including The Rockin' Race Jamboree in Spain, Rhythm Riot in England, Live and Jive in Sweden, Cahors Blues Festival in France, Moondogs International Rock'n'Roll Festival in Italy, and Let's Get Wild in Germany, plus a huge tour in Europe backing up Gizzelle, the soul diva from Los Angeles. In the meantime, the band recorded their second album, 20 Days. It features tunes by Mike Pedicin, Little Richard, Bobby Bland, Aaron Neville, and Otis Blackwell, as well as a number of original compositions. With its sizzlin' guitars, great piano work, and powerful sax, 20 Days recalls the music made between the late '50s and early '60s, when rhythm and blues slowly morphed into soul. The band's masterpiece so far.

PERC: Ma 12" (SA 026EP) 12.50
Alistair Wells (aka Perc) excels at sculpting tonally rich and percussively complex tracks that seem to both enlighten and confront. Here, opener "Death of Rebirth" uses a reliable 4/4 kick drum throb to orienting the listener in a glassy, metallic labyrinth. On "Negative Space," new forms arise at every turn, including a sort of hybridized piano/gamelan tone, the sound of a shuddering assembly line, and snaking delay feedbacks. Dispensing with the A-side's steady pulse, the side-long "Ma" modernizes the industrial-era rhythmic invocations of artists like Z'EV, achieving an almost classical solemnity without sacrificing Perc's usual love for cleverly manipulated electricity.

CAGE, JOHN: Early Electronic and Tape Music LP (SR 361LP) 15.50
2016 repress; LP version. Black vinyl repress. "I believe the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard." --John Cage, 1937."Although John Cage occasionally worked in large, sophisticated studios -- for example, when he composed 'Fontana Mix' in 1958 -- his approach to electronic and tape music was often uncomplicated, makeshift, and pragmatic, employing simple tabletop devices: tape machines, phonograph cartridges, contact microphones, record players, portable radios, etc. He developed a soundworld that was utterly new, radical and demanding. It heralded the age of the loudspeaker, mass communication and Marshall McLuhan's 'global village.' The hiss, crackle and hum of electronic circuits, and the disembodied sounds, snatched by radio from the ether, spoke of the 20th century. Langham Research Centre works within the tradition firmly established by Cage, using resources that would have been available to him. For the realization of Cartridge Music, moving iron phonograph pickups were sourced and restored. These have a knurled screw designed to hold a steel phonograph needle and, in the piece, other objects are inserted and amplified: pieces of wire, toothpicks, paperclips, etc. The realization of 'Fontana Mix' includes the individual mono tracks from Cage's original tapes created in 1958. These are played using open-reel tape machines. These practices ensure we work within the limitations that Cage experienced and enable us to get close to the soundworld he inhabited." --Robert Worby, Langham Research Centre

OTHMAN, ADNAN: Bershukor: A Retrospective of Hits by a Malaysian Pop Yeh Yeh Legend 2LP (SF 098LP) 26.50
The legendary Adnan Othman has long been a driving force in the Malaysian rock scene. As early as the 1960s his groundbreaking songs in the style known as "pop yeh yeh" (rock and roll sung in Malay) were attracting fans across Malaysia and Singapore. He has since gained many fans around the globe due to a renewed interest in rock music from Southeast Asia. Othman made his first recordings in Singapore in the early 1960s, when he was invited to record with highly popular backing band The Rhythm Boys. He produced innovative psychedelic rock well into the 1970s and continued to evolve as a musician and composer throughout his exciting career, but always stayed true to his rock and roll roots, even when many other artists were turning toward more predictable disco influences. Each track on this album, drawn from all eight of Othman's solo EPs and ranging from 1968-1971, reveals a different side of his personality. His forceful, gritty, and emotional lyrics and vocals are backed by such memorable pop yeh yeh bands as The Rhythm Boys, The Wanderers, The Flamingoes, and The Falcons. This impressive collection includes rare photos from the artist's own collection and a detailed biography co-written by Othman himself. This is a rare and personal insight into the life of one of Singapore and Malaysia's most beloved pop yeh yeh legends, revealing the humble, generous, down-to-earth man behind the spotlight. It is clear that Adnan Othman cares deeply about preserving the legacy of his fellow pop yeh yeh musicians; he devoted considerable time and energy helping to develop the previous Malaysian rock-focused release on Sublime Frequencies, Pop Yeh Yeh - Psychedelic Rock from Singapore and Malaysia 1964-1970: Vol. 1 (2013). Again, for this album, he patiently answered the label's many questions about his life as a musician and artist, lending Bershukor his unique perspective; the label's indebtedness to Othman is reflected in the album's title, which translates to "gratitude." The 26 unforgettable tracks on these two records are soulful, electrifying, and beautiful. To the many fans of '60s Asian rock and roll around the world who have been waiting for an album dedicated solely to the music of Adnan Othman, here it is. Compiled by Carl Hamm (Pop Yeh Yeh - Psychedelic Rock from Singapore and Malaysia 1964-1970). Presented in gorgeous gatefold sleeve with full-size eight-page color booklet of text and photographs.

PRITCHARD, BILL: Mother Town Hall CD (TR 320CD) 17.00
"A welcome return for a long-lost treasure." This was how Q magazine greeted the 2014 release of Bill Pritchard's album A Trip to the Coast (TR 280CD/LP). At the year's end, the album was included in the "50 besten Alben 2014" list in Rolling Stone's German edition. It had been nine years since Pritchard's previous release (2004's By Paris, By Taxi, By Accident), and due to an unlikely set of circumstances, A Trip to the Coast began taking shape in 2013. A friend and musician, Tim Bradshaw, moved to Pritchard's vicinity by chance. "We did the album together, basically because we're mates and we thought we'd have fun doing it," Pritchard is reported to have said in 2013. "But the response was great," he says in 2015. "I had no idea what to expect, but the welcome back was amazing." He's an unassuming character who doesn't pay much attention to who said what about whom -- the five-star reviews, radio play, shows, and videos -- although he was most concerned for the record company representative who had to be airlifted off a beach on the Welsh island of Anglesey while filming the video for "Trentham," the first single off A Trip to the Coast, in early 2014. In early 2015, Pritchard and Bradshaw returned to the studio to start the follow-up. Gradually, in bits and pieces, the album emerged. "The last album was very much about a journey of sorts," says Pritchard, "whereas this one is more rooted in one place, both thematically and emotionally." It was recorded mostly in Burslem, England ("The Mother Town"), with Bradshaw, Mike Rhead, Liam Bradley, and Remy LaPlage. Horns were added in France, and it was mixed in Burslem, Berlin, and Singapore with Bradshaw's long-time studio partner, Roo Pigott. The Burslem studio is a short step away from The Leopard inn (English writer Arnold Bennett's old fictional haunt), Vale Park (the home ground of Port Vale F.C.), and Waterloo Road, the namesake for Jason Crest's song "Waterloo Road," which French singer Joe Dassin covered under the title "Les Champs Élysées." The songs on Mother Town Hall are of the classic Bill Pritchard genre. Sparkling guitars, choruses to sing along to, meltingly beautiful ballads, and personal everyday lyrics about characters both real and imagined -- a figure whose only female company is a flower; the "Vampire of New York," who married a priest from Birmingham; and many others.

UNDAY RECORDS (BELGIUM)

UNDAY 050LP

BLACKIE & THE OOHOOS: Lacuna LP+CD (UNDAY 050LP) 23.50
Clear LP. Includes CD. Sisters Martha and Loesje Maieu are known as the spellbinding backing singers and synth players of Antwerp's Flying Horseman, but their own band, Blackie & the Oohoos, remains their main focus. And they've perfected their haunting dream pop with Lacuna, an album drenched in synths and melancholy that's dark, hypnotic, and notably more electronic than their earlier work. The sisters' songcraft and strong melodies remain at the core of every track, though on Lacuna the emphasis shifts toward rhythm and a coherent sound, with Alfredo Bravo's propulsive drumming and Milan Warmoeskerken's otherworldly guitar. This is a band at the top of their game, exploring the common ground between indie pop and electronica with undoubtedly their most consistent and strongest effort to date. Co-produced and mixed by studio wizard Dijf Sanders (Teddiedrum, The Violent Husbands).

UMA 103LP

ATRAX MORGUE: Necro Box 3LP BOX/CD (UMA 103LP) 94.00
Atrax Morgue was the brainchild of Marco Corbelli (1970-2007), a sound project started in the early '90s with a focus on various areas related to the field of psychopathology, including murder, violent death, sadism, necrophilia, schizophrenia, and insanity. The primary influences came from projects such as Brighter Death Now and Whitehouse, pioneers of a minimal, evil, and visceral electronic music, and from the legendary Italian projects Mauthausen Orchestra and The Sodality. The main concern of Atrax Morgue was the analysis of the death -- its perfection and complete habituation. Injections of death to continue to live. Necro Box is a tribute to the degenerate art of Atrax Morgue, one of Italy's greatest exponents of industrial music and power electronics. The first LP contains Necro-Sintesi, originally released as the A-side of a cassette split with Lunus on Corbelli's Slaughter Productions in 1993. It consists of three tracks based on the death-cold analog drones that characterize the first Atrax Morgue productions. Deviant, anxious sounds that assault the listener's head like razor blades. The second LP is Necrophiliac Experience, originally released as the A-side of a second cassette split with Lunus on Slaughter Productions in 1994. The glacial atmosphere incorporates murder and necrophilia to form a macabre collage. Obsessions emerge on the track "Necrophiliac Experience 3," which reproduces the word "omicidio" ("homicide") in an exasperated loop, inciting in the listener a sense of deep distress and maniacal fear. The third and final LP contains Basic Autopsy Procedure, originally released as a cassette on Slaughter Productions in 1995. Cold sound for white aseptic operating rooms and corpses in pieces. No compromise, only death! Deluxe "constellation snow" cardboard box with silver silkscreened text, manufactured by Fedrigoni, producers of fine Italian papers. Contains three high-quality 140-gram white LPs pressed in Germany with all-white labels in all-white poly-lined inner sleeves, each in a deluxe jacket bearing new individual artwork and protected by a clear plastic sleeve; a CD containing all of the tracks on the LPs; and a 16-page A5 booklet with credits, replicas of the original cassette artwork, and more. All tracks remastered for this release. Limited edition of 199 hand-numbered copies.

PIERANUNZI WITH SIMONA SEVERINI, ENRICO: My Songbook CD (VVJ 106CD) 16.50
Renowned Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi's album My songbook will surely surprise his long-time fans, revealing Pieranunzi as an ingenious songwriter with a deft technique and a restless imagination. The album contains 11 of Pieranunzi's own compositions, music, and lyrics, which flow effortlessly thanks to acclaimed vocalist Simona Severini, with whom Pieranunzi has been collaborating since 2012. The compositions are artfully arranged by Pieranunzi in formations ranging from duo to sextet; Severini's expressive voice brings a wonderful sensibility to the music, while the arrangements' astonishing range of expression shows off the quality of the musicians involved, including some of Italy's best-known jazz players (Luca Bulgarelli and Nicola Angelucci, as well as guests Rosario Giuliani and Francesco Lento).

VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO, THE: The Velvet Underground & Nico LP (VL 900051LP) 23.00
2016 repress; 2008 release. Although Warhol, who was listed as producer on the album, allegedly gave the Velvets free reign over their sound, it was on his insistence that Nico performed on this album. However, this does not detract from the fact that when this album was made the Red Sea parted, and the Velvet Underground crossed into the Promised Land.

ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, THE: Eat A Peach 2LP (VL 900136LP) 31.00
2016 restock. During the recording of this album, band leader Duane Allman was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Still reeling from their loss, the band nonetheless managed to complete this classic album with Dickey Betts on guitar. In tribute to Duane, however, they chose to bring the album to a close with a 34-minute jam taken from the Fillmore East sessions, which showcased what an amazing guitar player and force to be reckoned with Duane really was. Includes 3 bonus tracks and a replica of the original insert." The 4th Allman Brothers album, originally released in 1972. 180 gram virgin vinyl, deluxe gatefold sleeve.

WG 029EP

JULES, JIMI: Bogotá EP 12" (WG 029EP) 12.00
Jimi Jules, a regular fixture at both the Watergate club and its international showcases, joins the Watergate Records roster with the Bogotá EP. "Hundeblick" kicks things off with massive, rolling low end and swirling tones; it's a trippy, big-room burner bursting with tension. Twisted tune "Modulation" relies on just a few integral elements and an insanely infectious groove. Rounding out the EP is Jules's most passionate tune of the group, "Bogotá." Layers of harmony, silky guitars, and field recordings combine with hints of jazz influence, resulting in a perfect tune for the most intimate dancefloor moments.

VA: Secret Weapons 1 12" (WOLF 034EP) 12.50
Wolfskuil presents emerging artists Discrete Circuit, Rumah, and Nettling, who deliver one track apiece to showcase their personal styles. Discrete Circuit's "Gamma Decay" launches straight into a rapid and incessant bassline with raw claps in the unfiltered style that Discrete Circuit debuted on Delsin in 2015. Rumah dives deeper into the realm of sound with "I'm Sick Until They Sack Me," loosing oscillating chords into the atmosphere, while Nettling's "Cycle" exudes the energy of static electricity.

WORTHY 1014LP

ASTATKE & HIS ETHIOPIAN QUINTET, MULATU: Afro-Latin Soul LP (WORTHY 1014LP) 12.00
2016 repress. "This 1966 LP by Astatke (billed to Mulatu Astatke & His Ethiopian Quintet) isn't shaded by nearly as much African/Ethiopian influence as his later work, which was recorded between the late '60s and mid-'70s. As the title might lead you to believe, it is indeed more in the Latin soul-jazz bag than the later material, sometimes leaning toward the R&B-informed boogaloo sound of the mid-'60s. On his own compositions and arrangements (which comprise about half the LP), sometimes more exotic and African colors bubble closer to the surface, as on the eerie vibe parts he lays on 'Mascaram Setaba.'" -- Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide.

Z RECORDS (UK)

ZEDD 038CD

NEGRO, JOEY: Remixed with Love by Joey Negro Vol. Two 2CD (ZEDD 038CD) 17.00
Z Records starts 2016 in strong fashion with the follow-up to Dave Lee aka Joey Negro's Remixed with Love (ZEDD 030LP/X-LP, 2013). Twenty more reworkings of classic soul, funk, disco, and boogie tracks from the likes of Grace Jones, Robert Palmer, Cheryl Lynn, The O'Jays, Gwen McCrae, George Benson, and many more. Though remixes and edits of vintage dancefloor anthems aren't exactly hard to come by, and Soundcloud, Beatport, et al. heave under the weight of a gazillion bootleg offerings, many of these tracks taking a dusty, scratched 12" or a dodgy MP3 as their starting points -- Remixed with Love is a little different. Not only is the man with one of the most legendary record collections in the game guaranteed to dig deeper than most, but every track here has also been (re)created using fresh analog transfers of the original multi-track tapes, with the full consent and cooperation of the copyright owners. These tapes also contained elements that were not used in the original mixes, so Lee has incorporated some of these never-before-heard parts, including an aerobic workout instruction by Grace Jones. Putting an album like this together is no easy feat, as Lee himself explains in the extensive liner notes that accompany this package. First, one has to get permission from the copyright owners to undertake the project at all, which can in itself entail hundreds of emails and phone calls. Then one has to track down the original tapes, many of which may have been recorded over, lost, or simply destroyed, and convince the label archivists to get them digitized. And that's before one even starts remixing, which is when it turns out half the parts are missing, or that killer piano lick can't be foregrounded because the original was recorded live in the studio and the piano track has the bassline bleeding all over it. The title of this album is extremely appropriate, because for Dave Lee this definitely has been a labor of love! Also includes remixes of tracks by Patti LaBelle, Pockets, Kleeer, Christopher Cross, Thelma Houston, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norman Connors, Loose Change, Willie Hutch, and People's Choice, as well as CD-only remixes of tracks by The Trammps, Nicolette Larson, Jean Carn, and Wanda Walden.

ZG 9104CD

MOTHERHOOD, THE: I Feel So Free CD (ZG 9104CD) 17.00
The brainchild of legendary Berlin-born saxophonist and bandleader Klaus Doldinger, this psych-funk ultra-rarity was recorded and released in Germany in 1969. Featuring superb Beatles and Cream covers, as well as nine funky, punchy originals, it's nothing short of a space-age bachelor-pad classic. With original copies changing hands for well over $600, it makes its welcome reissue debut here.

ZG 9105CD

MAUREENY WISHFULL: The Maureeny Wishfull Album CD (ZG 9105CD) 17.00
In the mid-'60s, a prolific young singer-songwriter named John Williams was invited to record demos for Andrew Oldham's troubled Immediate label, with guitar and sitar accompaniment from Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan. Nothing was released at the time, though in 1967 Williams did have an LP and a couple of singles issued on Columbia. A few years later he privately issued 300 copies of his wistful Immediate demos as The Maureeny Wishfull Album. A legendary underground folk rarity now reissued on CD.
