CLARKE, DAVE Charcoal Eyes: A Selection Of Remixes From Amsterdam CD
Influential techno and electro icon Dave Clarke presents Charcoal Eyes: A Selection of Remixes From Amsterdam. Includes comprehensive notes explaining the backstory of each track, as well as a special two-verse poem penned by Clarke himself. Based in Amsterdam since 2008, the longtime English dance servant is synonymous with an abrasive, full-throttle brand of electronic music that he has showcased across hundreds of EPs, compilations, and albums since the early '90s. Clarke is also a celebrated radio pioneer, helming his own long-running White Noise show (which also spawned a label of the same name), and finished building his own studio in Amsterdam in 2014, which is where much of this work was completed. Charcoal Eyes finds Clarke taking on a diverse range of artists and adding his own fingerprint to a smorgasbord of sounds. From punk to new beat and fast-rising modern day artists to sadly disbanded bands, a lot of ground is covered, but it is all tied together by the studio nous and singular style of this notoriously outspoken pioneer. Opening up with a crisp rework of Placebo, the collection touches every shade of techno and electro from slick and futuristic to dark and heavy. Importantly, a semblance of the original artist's intentions always remains, and, much like his previous remixes of everyone from Fischerspooner to Depeche Mode, many of these are sure to become cult classics. Includes remixes of tracks by Placebo, Louisahhh!!! & Maelstrom, The Soft Moon, The Neon Judgement, John Foxx, Gazelle Twin, Amazing Snakeheads, Digital 21 + Stefan Olsdal, I Am Kloot, and A Place To Bury Strangers, plus four CD-only bonus remixes: two by Clarke, of I Am Kloot and Amazing Snakeheads, and two by _Unsubscribe_ (the duo of Clarke and Mr. Jones), of Crash Course In Science and House of Black Lanterns (feat. Ghettozoid).

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Bringing It All Back Home Again 12"
2016 repress; 12" EP version. 2013 release. Originally released in 1999 and now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) own record label. On this six-song EP, the band's affecting a more rural, lonesome-sounding tone and a moodier, more deliberate pace; the more traditional feel meshes well with Anton Newcombe's twisting of country-gospel lyrical clichés into rock & roll attitude.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Thank God for Mental Illness LP
2016 repress; Available on 180-gram yellow vinyl with download code for the original CD's 33-minute closing track "Sound of Confusion," excluded from this LP. This the first time that this title has been available on vinyl. At the risk of belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music to be released in 1996, The Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of The Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning -- rarely are bands quite so productive, or quite so consistently amazing. Thank God is The BJM's down-and-dirty country-blues outing, all 12-odd tracks supposedly recorded on a single July day at a cost of just $17.36. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist and singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp!, the label that gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. The BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally, Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase -- the band's name combines the name of Stones founder Brian Jones with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones -- but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegaze genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

TENNISCOATS Music Exists Disc 1 LP
The first part of a four-part vinyl edition of Tenniscoats' masterpiece Music Exists, a work of intimate, wonderful, psychedelic folk music. Includes double-sided fold-out insert. Tenniscoats have devoted followers all over the world, but their releases have always been hard to find outside of Japan. Except for their album Tokinouta (2011), which saw a very limited run on vinyl, and the seminal Two Sunsets, their 2009 collaboration with The Pastels (and a small handful of 7"s), there were never any vinyl releases, and the CDs were hard to get for anyone who doesn't speak or read Japanese. So this release is a chance to dive deep into the beautiful, unique world of the Tenniscoats and their magnum opus Music Exists. Tenniscoats are a duo that has enjoyed a long career in the music scene of their home country of Japan since their formation in 1996. They have collaborated with unique artists from different backgrounds (Tape, The Pastels, Pastacas, Jad Fair) while maintaining their own laid-back approach and sound. Their songs are built primarily from guitar and vocals with lyrical themes focusing on everyday life. It could be their expansion on simplicity that has captivated music lovers of all ages throughout their existence. Music Exists previously saw a limited release on the Tenniscoats' own Majikick label in 2015. "We started recording around January of 2013 with just the two of us in our 10 tatami-room in Tokyo we were using as a private studio. Arrangements were produced without computers by overdubbing on an analog console with mixing assistance provided by Saya. As we sent selected songs to be mastered by Yasushi Utsunomia, we were able to see the tracks grown into a full length album." Tenniscoats wrote and recorded the album themselves using an analog console, a microphone, and what few instruments they had. As the project developed, they were surprised to find that they had amassed several albums' worth of material, showcasing their unique combination of melodies and unexaggerated arrangements. Co-released by the Germany-based Alien Transistor label and the Tokyo-based Afterhours magazine and label.

LA BARBARA, JOAN Voice Is The Original Instrument LP
Voice Is The Original Instrument was the first record released by Joan La Barbara in 1976 on Wizard Records. This is the first time the original LP, with artwork, has been made available again. It has since become iconic as one of the initial examples of extended vocal techniques in experimental music. The human voice is the only instrument on the recordings. The works on Voice is the Original Instrument were some of Joan's earliest compositions, researching the possibilities of the voice, in two rigorous études, "Circular Song" and "Voice Piece: One-Note Internal Resonance Investigation", and the more free-form "Vocal Extensions", which uses live electronic processing. "My reason for producing the LP was to get my music out to the world beyond NYC and the major cities in which I was playing concerts," she says. "At that time, Carla Bley and Michael Mantler had started JCOA/New Music Distribution Service which handled small independent labels, so there were quite a few artists in the NYC area who were producing their own albums and distributing them through that service." Just out of college and living in a Soho loft in New York, Joan began playing shows in New York with jazz and rock musicians, and with those in the new music scene. "I did commercials, which, strangely enough, led me to Steve Reich," she says. "A composer I was working with, Michael Sahl hired me to do some radio commercials and suggested me to Reich who was looking for singers who could imitate instruments, which was something I had been working on for some time and was part of my exploration of the voice. I worked with Reich on the development of "Drumming", imitating the marimba."

BAUMEL, PATRICE Balance Presents Patrice Baumel CD
Patrice Bäumel occupies a highly distinctive and less-trodden niche in electronic music. He operates at the intersection of the emotive and the technical, with his keen ear for melody and drama working in tandem with intricate sound design and experimental templates. While one could loosely label him a techno artist, his love of ambient and electronica is just as crucial to his musical identity as any sense of dancefloor machination might be. A stalwart of the Amsterdam scene who held residencies at the legendary Club 11 and Trouw, he has proven himself to be a formidable producer with releases on Kompakt, !K7, Get Physical, My Favorite Robot, and Systematic, in addition to his acclaimed 2010 debut album, Vapour (TRW 001CD). He joins the illustrious Balance Presents canon with a truly cohesive and imaginative piece of work, blending and contrasting the soaring melodies of M83 and ethereal magic of Nils Frahm with the guttural throb of Plastikman; the glistening highs of Max Cooper (remixing Stephan Bodzin) with the dark lows of FKA Twigs. The mix also features three exclusive productions from Bäumel. It opens with his "Intro," hits a moment of high drama with his intense, brooding version of Underworld's "Bird 1," and closes with the mesmeric "Departure," a beatless slice of epic crescendos, penetrating sub blasts, and intense percussion that loses nothing from the absence of kicks. Bäumel painstakingly arranged the whole affair using harmonic matching, automation, transposing looping, and editing, and finally passed it through an analog mixer for a crisp, tight aesthetic. "I hope for the mix to contain enough intelligence and emotion to be a worthwhile listen under many circumstances. It's not all easy listening; some parts really have teeth. So by nature, the mix is not -- and was never meant to be -- for people with a low tolerance for music and sound that is outspoken. I didn't want to dumb it down. I think it's a great after-hour home party mix but I hope that it sparks people's imagination and creativity in all kinds of situations." Also includes tracks by Heathered Pearls, Jon Hopkins, Kurt Baggaley, Christopher Bissonnette, Throwing Snow, Vessels remixed by Barker & Baumecker, Doubtingthomas, Minilogue remixed by Jichael Mackson, Bee Mask, DJ Hell remixed by Playgroup, Guy J, Barry Jamieson remixed by Charlie May, Jesse Somfay, El_Txef_A remixed by Dave DK, and Kangding Ray.

YOUNG, DENNIS Wave: Electronic Music 1984-1988 CD
Dennis Young is best known as the percussionist of the New York band Liquid Liquid, who are themselves known for their 1983 track "Cavern," sampled the same year by Grandmaster Flash for "White Lines." In parallel to his work with Liquid Liquid, Young produced his own solo work, including three cassettes released between 1985 and 1988 that form his tribute to the pioneers of electronic music. Wave: Electronic Music 1984-1988 contains the best pieces from these cassettes, as selected by Young himself. Those who don't know otherwise might guess that this music originated in the '70s. As Young recalls, "My love for electronic music goes back to the late 70's when I decided to buy my first synthesizer, a rare used vintage Davolisint made in Italy, after seeing Keith Emerson perform live with ELP. This lead to my discovery of more electronic music artists using synthesizers such as Klaus Schulze, Tim Blake, Larry Fast, Edgar Froese, Brian Eno, and Cluster just to name a few. My musical challenge was then to create my own electronic music using this instrument. After experimenting in the early 80's with live recordings using a reel to reel tape machine I purchased my first multi-track recording system in 1984. When Liquid Liquid was on hiatus I was able to devote full time to this music and do professional recordings at my home studio in Edison, New Jersey. I added more synthesizers to include a Korg Mono/Poly, a Korg Poly Six, a Moog Rogue, and later the Korg M1. Every track was put through various delay and reverb units and I added vocal parts and along with guitar where I felt it was needed. The music resulted in three now out of print cassette only recordings entitled Concepts (1985), Reflections (1987), and Quest (1988). They were all mixed at Gabriel Farm studios in Princeton, New Jersey, with the help of Andrew Gomory who owned the studio and who himself was a keyboardist. Thanks to Bureau B I have been able to go back in time to put together what I feel are the best songs from that era for you the listener to enjoy." --Dennis Young

ARBEIT SCHICKERT SCHNEIDER ASS CD
Three guitarists, three generations, one album. Günter Schickert, Jochen Arbeit, and Dirk Dresselhaus are all renowned Berlin guitarists. They epitomize three generations of experimental musicians; Schickert personifies the krautrock of the 1970s, Arbeit 1980s post-punk, and Dresselhaus the neo-electronica of the late 1990s and 2000s. Their artistic approaches may differ according to their diverse musical backgrounds, yet what they have in common is a fundamental interest in developing the guitar as a sound object and seeking out unusual structures and harmonies. They now present the results of their explorations and ideas with a joint album. The final product is very much more than the sum of its parts, due not only to the participants' different musical philosophies, but also to the use of instruments not usually associated with this type of music (e.g. balafon, conch, mbira, electronic drums, modular synthesizer). Their joint album concocts a kind of musical magic from a myriad of influences (krautrock, psychedelia, free jazz, punk, industrial, techno, minimal electronic . . .) yet simultaneously transcends them to create a new form of music. Günter Schickert (born 1949) has been an active member of the Berlin music scene since 1964. He released two albums in 1974 and 1979 on two legendary krautrock labels, Brain and Sky Records (Überfällig, BB 096CD/LP). Since then he has played in various projects, including the band Ziguri, and pursued a solo career. Jochen Arbeit (born 1961) moved to Berlin in 1980 and joined the Geniale Dilletanten art group, who mixed punk rock and Dada. In 1983 he began touring the world with his instrumental rock band Die Haut. He has been a member of Einstürzende Neubauten since 1997 and Automat since 2012. Dirk Dresselhaus (born 1970) has been involved in various musical fields since the late 1980s. Between 1989 and 1997 he played and sang in noise rock and pop bands like Locust Fudge and Hip Young Things, before focusing more on electronic music from 1997 onward, starting up his Schneider TM project. In 1999 Dresselhaus formed the Angel duo with Ilpo Väisänen.

ROMANELLI, EMILIANO Tabulatura Cassette
Tabulatura (2008) is an indeterminate composition for 16 prerecorded guitar parts and computer with custom software. It is conceived as a system to generate different electroacoustic patterns. This cassette documents seven pieces recorded live during four sessions at the 18th-century Palazzo Castagna in Città Sant'Angelo, Italy, between May and June 2015. The album was recorded on two-track, directly on hard drive, without DSP and overdubs. Emiliano Romanelli (b. 1979) is an Italian musician with a background in visual art. His works include sound installation, live performance, and composition; they are based on generative systems and the perceptual relationships between sound, light, and space. His work is published by Terziruolo (IT). He is a co-founder of the multimedia duo Tu m' (1998-2011). Their compositions have been released by labels including LINE (US), Headz (Japan), and Dekorder (Germany), and their audio-visual works have been exhibited in various museums and galleries including the Castle of Rivoli (Turin), the Arnolfini (Bristol), and the Oboro (Montréal).

All of the music on offer here possesses a slow and dark drive that purposes it for the dance floor, but also contain such a wealth of loss despair, and a perverse pathos that elevates them from simple dance music and move them in to a more artistic realm.

Hell, they fit more energy and incident into a 4-bar phrase than your average minimal-monkey manages in a career. The bolshy, brutal rhythm and sandpapery coarseness of the sound design around it is matched with a deft sense of spatial arrangement and emphasis -- not since the days of Mark Stewart + The Maffia have barely suppressed violence and and a trippy, dubwise sensibility worked so naturally and effectively together." --FACT, "The Essential... STIMMING Alpe Lusia CD
Hamburg-based electronic musician Stimming presents his fourth album, Alpe Lusia. The work takes its name from a remote little hut in the Italian Alps, in which Stimming secluded himself to work on the album for a full month, all by himself. "When I reduce the outer impulses, I create a sort of artificial understimulation which in turn makes all my gear and equipment appear incredibly attractive again (in the way it actually deserves to be)," explains the artist. Alpe Lusia begins with the rippling noise of a little creek, and in a way, the album itself is precisely that -- a river, which in its course ingests further streams and gains force, while still remaining the same. At times it's as powerful as a rapid, and at others calm as a river bend, but it always originates from the same spring. "I wanted to create something of my own, a journey that (apart from the basic House formula) orientates itself as little as possible on contemporary influences," says Stimming. If you want to rely on his many colleagues' feedback, it seems he has mastered that -- e.g. DJ Koze, who says: "I am amazed. Incredibly warm, stripped down, deep, playful and most of all personal! Almost as if someone sat in front of his gear while cruising on a cutter boat over the ocean all by himself (and on Ritalin)." And the cutter boat is indeed part of the story -- after finishing the production of Alpe Lusia in the lonesome lodge, Stimming went (not without taking a short break among people) onto a container vessel by himself for seven days, sailing through the wintery North and Baltic Seas from Bremerhaven over northern Sweden and back via Rotterdam to the starting point. Stimming used this time to single-mindedly work on his live set for the 2016 worldwide album release tour. Would Stimming recommend this excursion to fellow producers? Not without preparing sufficient material and ideas: "I think starting with a blank piece of paper would be way too tough."

This is one of the few 1960 recordings by the legendary formation in its only European tour, before Coltrane's departure to form his own band; one can hear the master musician just on the cusp of breaking forward to his more progressive-leaning phase, while still completely rooted in tradition. A must-have!

2016 repress. Originally released in 1997. Learning is four tracks of typically disciplined but rocking Surgeon gear as you might expect from the Dynamic Tension label. As with many of the releases on the label, the four cuts investigate different aspects of the same theme, which is to say that there are sounds and grooves that are common to the four tracks, but as a whole each track sounds very different.

SURGEON Compliance Momentum 12"
2016 repress; originally released in 2010. "'Compliance Momentum' [is] classic Surgeon, a rocking breakbeat techno track. . . . Frayed in all the right places, it barges through the front door, ransacks the apartment and leaves without so much as a 'hello.' 'The Crawling Frog Is Torn and Smiles,' though, is something else altogether. It remains firmly in the upper register of techno BPM-wise, but it feels much slower. . . . It's the sound of a Surgeon proud of his work, showcasing a side of his work that we don't see quite as often." --Resident Advisor

BREAKBOT Still Waters 2LP
Black vinyl version. Thibaut Berland aka Breakbot presents his second album, Still Waters, the full-length inauguration of the project's duo configuration with collaborator Irfane. Still Waters is an assortment of southern sunrays created according to the duo's well-oiled formula. They each cook up outlines of rhythms and melodies, then modify, complete, and extend them to reach a final draft. Still, Still Waters sees Breakbot trying out a few new moves; unlike Berland's 2012 debut, By Your Side, Still Waters is more the work of intricate workmanship carved out with the help of old analog machines rather than digital software. Some of these tracks were also happy accidents from improvisational sessions; ricochets of voices and chords born of old-school jam sessions. Thirteen bouncy acts with Stevie Wonder and the Motown crowd in the background; spouts of funk and disco on a well-trodden dancefloor. Crafty ideas whipped up in a vintage outfit with techno vibes and futuristic accelerations creating a perfectly current soundtrack. Tomorrow's retro. With Still Waters, Breakbot introduces its new head along with a new uniform. With the help of art director Philippe Jarrigeon, the guy wearing short shorts and knee-high socks has become a character in a cocktail colored costume, like a Florida prince. Image on music. Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves.

A SAGITTARIUN Elasticity CD
Ambient techno exponent A Sagittariun fires off another full-length album transmission on his own Elastic Dreams label. Elasticity is the Bristol-based artist's second long-player and the follow-up to his acclaimed 2013 debut, Dream Ritual (EDREAMS 001CD/LP). Dream Ritual firmly established A Sagittariun as an artist whose musical chops and integrity operate largely outside of the mainstream, and as a producer who chooses to put the music firmly at center-stage while opting to remain relatively anonymous within the music scene. Elasticity marks a return for A Sagittariun follow a trio of singles in early 2015 (for Hypercolour, Secretsundaze, and Elastic Dreams), and fans of the slippery and elastic sounds that hallmarked his debut album will not be disappointed. As A Sagittariun explains, "Elasticity was recorded over quite a short period, but the sketches and ideas have been germinating for some time, so sonically it's very coherent and consistent and moves in a way that I personally like albums to move in, with a narrative and flow that holds you right to the end. The recipe for Elasticity was always to be malleable and pliable with the sounds and tempos; for me it's all about the listening experience, and creating a landscape and a world within that one can really get deep into and explore, it's optimistic and progressive music for the head, heart and feet. I really do advise the listener to don headphones and take the trip with me." Over the album's tracks, and a supporting set of "Transmissions" from the likes of Robert Anton Wilson and Terence McKenna, Elasticity delves into a myriad of textured sounds and pliable rhythms, touching on ambient, industrial, breaks, and dub influences. CD includes three extra tracks.

JUNGLE: MAT WALERIAN/MATTHEW SHIPP/HAMID DRAKE Live at Okuden 2CD
Mat Walerian: alto saxophone, bass clarinet, clarinet, flute; Matthew Shipp: piano; Hamid Drake: drums, percussion. Recorded November 19, 2012, at the Okuden Music concert series. From William Parker's liner notes: "Stepping into the Silence, this is literary music, epic little bouts of brilliance. That expands and stretches across what you might call instant reality, the lining or other side of the cosmic blanket where ordinary yet extraordinary people live; it swings and is balanced, it knows where to stop and begin again. It Bees and it Bops, it is and isn't at the same time, but the main thing is they don't scream -- not that the scream and the shout are bad. It's that you have to play inside your destiny rather than a musical style. It's all about playing free instead of asking others for freedom, so I celebrate Drake, Shipp, and Walerian for choosing life over music. Choosing intuition over tradition."

FIRST, DAVID Same Animal, Different Cages Vol. 1: Études For Acoustic Guitar LP
"Fabrica Records announces the first volume in the Same Animal, Different Cages series by American composer and improviser David First. On Études for Acoustic Guitar, First twists and bends notes from his steel-string acoustic guitar, an instrument traditionally associated with American folk, country and blues music. And in fact, those genres are central to First's explorations here, constituting portions of a palette that also encompasses jazz and Indian classical music. In this series of stylistic hybrids, an expansive tonality is propelled with rhythmic authority. The effect is similar to that of tape manipulation, or to the challenges posed to the inner ear by Phil Niblock's shifting dissonances. It's almost as if the room itself speeds up and slows down as First performs in it, anchoring himself in three humble dimensions and letting time do what it will. The Same Animal, Different Cages series serves as the latest chapter in the oeuvre of a musician whose defining quality is arguably his curiosity. First asks the right questions, and there are no wrong answers. Subsequent volumes in the series will include similar explorations on analog modular synthesizer, harmonica, sitar, computer, voice and electric guitar."

HOLLOW DECK Hobson's Choice LP
"The debut LP by this Western Mass duo is a masterpiece of fractured air. The two performers are Andy Allen (from the original line-up of Guerilla Toss, among many other places) and Mia Friedman (whose collaborations apart from this include Lichen and appearances with Lauri McNamara's Carbuncles). Previously issued as a cassette, Hobson's Choice is a blend of traditional and experimental approaches that alternately puts us in mind of several units inhabiting the landscape of Strange Maine over the last decade, and the animated '30s cartoons of Max Fleischer. And Hollow Deck have a unique way of quivering between their two main style poles guaranteed to put hair on anyone's chest. From its first song, the album is a bridge between beauty (as personified by Mia's singing voice) and odd instrumental work that moves from clutter to clack to clam in the space of a blink. A few of the tracks are so sweetly arranged -- rural voice and flute gliding above warm fields -- that it almost feels like insanity is on the wind when the musical proceedings turn dark and unruly. But, as in life, they always do eventually, if only for the nonce. Before you know it, the scene turns into a nursery room theatrical with mice in white gloves capering while the cat naps. Other gorgeous bits recall Joanne Robertson at her most elegiac, singing along to a broken record. Then flutes join the fun, as though representing a pack of wolves mourning the death of the moon. Hobson's Choice is filled with many other such seemingly contradictory juxtapositions. Letting them flow through your head will free you -- if only for a moment -- from the world around us, delivering you somewhere new before snatching you back to reality. Enjoy the trip." - Byron Coley, 2016

TREB, BROMP Concession Themes LP
"Most dance music cuts up time like a log saw bearing down on a tied up lady. It's dramatic and everything, sure. But you can always tell what's going to happen way ahead of time. What if, instead, you threw all those beats and tempos at the ceiling and then just let the pieces fall wherever? Neil Young Cloaca makes whimsical, jiggling electronics that go from dry to juicy to unintelligible and morph again & again before you even figure them out. He has a pile of mysterious black boxes that wiggle on a table, and if you see him live, you also get a mysterious man with a big rib cage and a homemade haircut that wiggles himself jubilantly alongside the boxes. He pulls faces, leaves the stage, turns the lights on & off, freezes in awkward poses, and usually has more fun than you're supposed to playing music, dance-type or otherwise. Neil has been slinging tapes since 1991, but dove deeper into his beats and noises with the first self-produced Bromp Treb release in 2002. He's best known to out-of-towners as the drummer from Fat Worm of Error, but all along he's been quietly running Yeay! Plastics and pinching out modest releases when moved. This Cloaca has no relation to the Canadian Neil Young by the way, and thank christ because this one is way cooler. Fat Worm has been on hiatus recently, as a couple of members have moved to the other end of the country. So there's been room for more of Neil by himself. And his sound is getting even weirder because of it. Here, finally, is a fat slab of vinyl, his first long-player. You can now dance along to Neil in your house without anyone wondering whether you're epileptic. Careful though, because you're gonna break some of the shit in your room." - Angela Sawyer (2016)

WALKER & THE WALKER BROTHERS, SCOTT Everything Under The Sun CD
"Having officially disbanded in late 1967 following a hugely successful career in the UK, The Walker Brothers - non-related American natives to a man - were persuaded by management to undertake a short tour of Japan together in the opening month of 1968. 'Brother' Scott Walker (née Engel) had adopted the most prominent role in the trio by this juncture and was pursuing a solo career too, which was proving both successful and critically acclaimed. Having released his first solo album Scott a few months before - a record which climbed to No. 3 on the UK albums chart, beating by as many points the last WB album - he still came out of the trio penniless. Knowing that to make further solo works was going to cost dear, he agreed to a final (or so he believed at the time) fling with his fake brethren, Gary and John. The shows at the Osaka Festival hall between the 2nd and 4th, recorded for television transmission, were as riotous as any pop concert in 1960's Japan was ever going to be - still an ultra-conservative albeit democratic and modern Asian territory. The songs performed can be described best as a motley collection of numbers from the group's back catalogue, plus a single strike from Scott and a rag-bag selection of covers. That being said, the results prove to be a thoroughly enjoyable live run through of both the big hits and some of the finest cuts from the Brothers' four, often underrated, albums together. With performances of such lost classics as 'Living Above Your Head,' 'In My Room,' 'Everything Under The Sun' and Scott's marvellous 'Saturday's Child' alongside 'Make It Easy On Yourself' and 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore,' and while the flow may be a little disjointed, the editing for television somewhat unorthodox to western ears and the between song announcements - well, judge those for yourself - this rare recording will prove a must-have CD for fans of both Scott Walker and of the group with which he came to the world's attention."

HOLY GROVE Holy Grove CD
Remember when heavy rock bands wrote songs? In the early '70s, Grand Funk, Bang, and Deep Purple brought hooks and choruses to seriously weighty tunes. Portland, Oregon's Holy Grove walk in the footsteps of tradition, pitting soulful vocals, searing guitar solos, and swinging grooves into their own dinosaur stomp. After wowing US audiences since their inception in 2013, the doom blues group is now ready to deliver their self-titled debut, with seven tracks full of blazing riffage, piercing wails, and enough rhythmic heft to satisfy today's doom-hungry audience. Andrea Vidal's lyrics of myth and fantasy coast on a massive magic carpet of guitar licks, kept aloft by a pulverizing rhythm section. Holy Grove is far more than a toe dipped in the occult spring. They produce a patiently crafted statement of intent with major love and assistance from master engineer Billy Anderson (Sleep's Dopesmoker, Melvins). SKIN CRIME Case Studies In Early Taxidermy Techniques 20CD BOX
"Deluxe 20xcd cloth bound foil stamped box with ribbon including individual wallets, 40-page booklet and 2-sided poster. Edition of 300. Despite being the creator and main operator of the legendary and eerie Self Abuse records, Patrick O'neil founded Skin Crime in 93/94 out of the morbid surrealism of mother project -- Hanged Man's Orgasm. One of the earliest and most influential American noise institutions from the '90s, Skin Crime could be said to be the missing link between European Musique concrete, Japanese noise, and the gritty abstract electronics of what became the glory and gory days of 'American Harsh Noise.' The special and largely undocumented moment at which the 'noise' broke away from 'industrial' to destroy further its electronic roots. Its synthetic sound sources associated with industrial became so self abused that their electronic origins were rendered indecipherable and turned into a rotten organic abstraction. Skin Crime distinguished themselves as not just another 'bedroom project' but a real dedicated live noise band. With a rotating lineup surrounding their core as a three piece, their highly detailed ascending compositions offset with their forceful and dynamic textures quickly secured them a place in the rapidly emerging international noise subculture. Appearing on such cult releases as The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn tour VHS and An Evening Of Serious Noise tape box, their unique live model saw the band performing alongside heavyweights such as the Haters, Merzbow, and Masonna, outlasting many of their peers. Through careful selection yet extensive depth their key works as well as vital secrets are preserved here with respect to the mystery."

ADISA-FARRAR & FLORIAN PELLISSIER QUINTET, SHOLA Lost Myself CD
Shola Adisa-Farrar and Florian Pellissier, raised on opposite sides of the Atlantic, combine their talents for Lost Myself. This musical voyage blends New York hard-bop aesthetics and reggae-inspired elements with the jazz of today for a fresh spin on jazz classics and original compositions. Vocalist Shola Adisa-Farrar, a native of Oakland, California, was born into a family of artists and intellectuals. Shola began singing at the age of eight, influenced by her Jamaican upbringing and the soul and jazz classics that played in her home. At a young age, Shola garnered attention for her distinct raspy voice, which enabled her to perform a variety of musical styles as well as secure radio spots as a voice-over artist. After living in New York City for eight years, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Music, she moved to Paris, where she continues to perform and developing her musical style. This album is her exploration into jazz. Florian Pellissier, Parisian pianist and composer, is known for the authenticity and hard-bop style he brings to his music. A graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Pellissier has spearheaded his own quintet, with which he has released two successful albums, Le diable et son train (2012) and Biches Bleues (2014). Pellissier has also contributed his musical talent, which includes his command of the Rhodes, to jazz and funk projects such as Setenta, Camarao Orkestra, Chevere Que Son, Cotonete, and Guts. During Shola's year-long residence as a performer for Le Réservoir's Sunday Jazz Brunch, Hot Casa Records' DJ duo introduced Shola to Pellissier, sensing the two artists would musically complement each other. In July 2013, their musical collaboration began. Bonding over their love of jazz autobiographies, swapping music, and improvising together, a studio collaboration was born in the hidden basement of Colorblind Studio on Paris's Left Bank. The result is a collection of eight spiritually tinged jazz tracks recorded live on analog equipment to maintain the traditional quality of the music, from sultry introspections to rhythmic compositions grounded in intense emotion. Included are jazz classics such as "Feeling Good" and "I Have A Dream" (a tribute to Herbie Hancock, whose music has influenced Pellissier ever since his formative years in New York). VA The Ladies of Too Slow to Disco CD
With The Ladies of Too Slow to Disco, the How Do You Are? label takes a look at the women who kick-started the female pop revolution in the '70s -- not only covering the big names like Carole King, Carly Simon, or Rickie Lee Jones, but also unearthing lots of overlooked and lost gems of the 1970s LA music scene. As with the two previous Too Slow to Disco compilations, the goal is to reinstate a few unjustly overlooked talents. But above all this is about the music; that vaulting ambition that pours out of these arrangements, lyrics, and melodies, all played by the finest musicians the LA scene could muster. So take a trip and round out your picture of a decade. The style is still Too Slow to Disco. But the inspiration and the achievement is all woman. These much-loved compilations are the brainchild of Berlin cratedigger DJ Supermarkt, the musical luminary who brought J-pop to discerning Western ears back in the late 1990s with his Bungalow Records label and who has been a champion for the reappraisal of smooth music for decades. The first two volumes of Too Slow to Disco were both rightly acclaimed as Best Compilation of the Year by Rough Trade, and this installment brings together another kick-ass roster of lost pop gems. Includes 16-page booklet with liner notes. Includes tracks by Evie Sands, Rickie Lee Jones, Laura Allan, Melissa Manchester, Franne Golde, Valerie Carter, Teri DeSario, Carole Bayer Sager, Carly Simon, Jaye P. Morgan, Lauren Wood, Renée Geyer, Maria Muldaur, Brenda Russell, Leah Kunkel, Amy Holland, Carole King, Doris Abrahams, and Lyn Christopher.

HAYWARD, ROBIN Stop Time CD
Robin Hayward plays microtonal tuba in Catherine Christer Hennix's ensemble; Stop Time is his first composition to be released on Important Records. Stop Time was commissioned for a festival of the same name that took place in Leuven, Belgium, in 2013. It is the first piece to use a subset of the three-dimensional physical version of the Hayward Tuning Vine software, invented in 2012, as a musical score. The harmonic space implied within the four cubes contained within the subset, based on prime numbers two (octave, color-coded gray), three (perfect fifth, color-coded blue), and five (major third, color-coded red), is explored by the acoustic instruments and projected via the surround-sound system onto the physical space of the performance area. In this performance, the color-coding is made explicit by spotlighting each musician according to the color of the pitch played. In the middle of the piece, when the central black ball is sounded, the lighting therefore momentarily disappears. The idea is not so much to simulate synesthesia as to explore possible interactions between sound, vision, space, and time. Harmonic space is projected over time onto physical space, thus "stopping time." The recording and photos are from a September 2014 performance at De Bijloke, Ghent. Wannes Gonnissen: live electronics; Robin Hayward: microtonal tuba, composition; Pieter Matthynssens: cello; Bertel Schollaert: baritone saxophone. Marieke Berendsen: scenography. Tania Kelley: photograph of physical Tuning Vine.

LYKEN, MARK The Terrestrial Sea CD
Mark Lyken is an artist, composer, and filmmaker based in rural Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. He creates musical and sound pieces, films, paintings, and installations. The Cromarty Firth is an inlet of the North Sea in the Scottish Highlands. It is an important and protected natural habitat of seabirds and marine mammals, yet it is also an essential berth of the oil and tourism industries. Based in a field station ideally located at the Cromarty Lighthouse, ecologists from the University of Aberdeen study how natural and man-made environmental changes influence the behavior and populations of the Firth's protected species. In 2012 Lyken was artist in residence at the Lighthouse Field Station, where he worked alongside the ecologists and recorded The Terrestrial Sea. He returned to the town of Cromarty in 2014 to collaborate on a companion film with award-winning filmmaker Emma Dove (this CD includes a link to the film). The Terrestrial Sea is the culmination of that work, highlighting the diverse and ever-changing environments that the ecologists are studying through music and film. The Terrestrial Sea is deeply imbued with a sense of place. While sonically evoking the drama and beauty of the land and seascapes of the Cromarty Firth it also explores the tensions that exist surrounding the natural and industrial world. The music combines real-world, electronic, and processed sounds, creating a sometimes incongruous soundworld of corroded melodies, percussive clangs, drilling platform drones, pile-driving booms, intensifying boat noise, local voices, the simulated sounds of weather, and the ever-present sea itself.

AYLER, ALBERT My Name Is Albert Ayler LP
Originally released in 1964, My Name Is Albert Ayler is the debut album by legendary free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. Recorded in Copenhagen with a Scandinavian rhythm section, this album sets the stage for the sheer brilliance that was to come. Although the backing band plays fairly straight-ahead bop and feels out of place at times, it doesn't detract from the program as a whole, as Ayler's singular sound shines through. This is especially true on the absolutely stunning version of "Summertime." An essential piece of the unique Albert Ayler puzzle, documenting one of the most important jazz musicians of the 20th century.

SUN RA The Saturn Singles Vol. 1: 1954-1958 LP
Herman Poole Blount, better known to the world as Sun Ra, lived more musical lives in his 79 years on this planet (and others) than seems possible. In the '30s he was the most rigorous bandleader in Birmingham, heading the Sonny Blount Orchestra and filling every waking moment with music or philosophical discussions; by the '40s he had moved to Chicago and performed with luminaries such as Wynonie Harris, Fletcher Henderson, and Coleman Hawkins. By the '50s he had changed his name to Sun Ra and began performing with longtime Arkestra bandmates John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Sun Ra started his own label, El Saturn (or Saturn), to release his own recordings as well as those featuring the Arkestra backing local R&B and doo-wop groups. Though the genres showcased here are more pop than the world has come to expect from Sun Ra, the vibe and feel is purely cosmic, producing some of the wildest, strangest R&B ever created this side of the sun. Essential early Sun Ra performances and productions, 1954-1958.

CONNELLY & MICHAEL BEGG, CHRIS New Town Nocturnes CD
" New Town Nocturnes is a collection of strange, fractured, impressionistic versions of memories from a time in my life both real and imagined, coming to me like almost inaudible radio waves from my past, the sound of people I loved walking carefully through my heart and sometimes staying there. I am not sure if these are poems or songs with no singing -- there is certainly no symmetry to these words -- but there is a strange geography that takes in my beloved Edinburgh and reaches out from the New Town to Causewayside, the Union Canal and beyond the city to the Pentland Hills and to Bavelaw. These are the places I was, and these are the things I think I remember. "These words were brought to life and turned into the sculptures they are by my friend Michael Begg, who read them and then created these sonic landscapes, textures, rooms and streets for me to be in. This album was inspired by the Edinburgh poet and artist Stanley Roger Green, for whom I wrote the piece 'Cairn' as an answer to his poem, the mighty 'Bavelawin Winter' from the book A Suburb of Belsen which has been a constant inspiration to me for the past 35 years." -- Chris Connelly

RITORNELL If Nine Was Eight CD
Austrian duo Ritornell present their third album, If Nine Was Eight, following Golden Solitude (KK 047CD, 2009) and Aquarium Eyes (KK 071CD/LP, 2013). The album sees percussionist Richard Eigner and pianist Roman Gerold create states of suspension and illusion that not only blur the lines between pop and art but also between acoustic and electronic sounds. The ambiguous beauty of their music has been compared to a detailed botanical still life -- one half-expects to see movement among the leaves. Contrabass flute, cello, piano, Rhodes -- these are only some of the ingredients that make up the ten tracks on If Nine Was Eight. Eigner and Gerold collaborate with a number of musicians on the album, including jazz tubist Jon Sass, saxophonist Werner Zangerle, and Swiss avant-garde percussionist Julian Sartorius. Flip Philipp, member of the Wiener Symphoniker, plays marimba and vibraphone. Various flutes are added by Norbert Trawöger, a prolific mediator between old and new music. Mira Lu Kovacs (Schmieds Puls) is responsible for the lyrics and vocals on the track "Old People," Viennese artist Mimu Merz (Book of Now) is once more a part of the team, and the soulful vocals on the track "Sleeping Alone" are courtesy of Tobias Koett of the duo Ant Antic. In Ritornell's protean live performances everything is flexible. Depending on the context, Eigner and Gerold dress their compositions in different guises -- dance tunes can morph into planar, cloudy soundscapes and vice versa. Thus they demonstrate that even if nine can never be eight, at least their music is full of possibilities.

RUSH & BUDDY GUY, OTIS Live In Chicago '88 CD
Otis Rush and Buddy Guy live at the fifth annual Chicago Blues Festival on June 10th, 1988. Given the Windy City's rich blues legacy, it may be surprising to learn that this was only the fifth occasion on which the hugely influential genre was celebrated on one of its true home turfs. As it was, Chicago's 1988 Blues Festival played host to a dazzling showcase of past and present icons. Like Buddy Guy, the wider neglect of Otis Rush's work would eventually give way to a renaissance and built on that, an entire revival by the mid-1980s. Two pathfinders, as unique and important in their own ways as Waters, Wolf and Walter, would finally receive the critical acclaim they so richly deserved. Professionally re-mastered original WBEZ-FM broadcast with background liners and rare archival photos.

GIBSON, KENNETH JAMES The Evening Falls CD
Kenneth James Gibson, one of the most multifaceted artists in contemporary electronic music, presents the fourth installment in Kompakt's Pop Ambient artist album series. He's the mastermind behind the Adjunct Audio label and projects as diverse as [a]pendics.shuffle, Eight Frozen Modules, Reverse Commuter, neo-Americana duo Bell Gardens (with Stars of the Lid's Brian McBride), and noise pop band Furry Things. On The Evening Falls, he deviates from his more beat-infused work and explores vast aural landscapes with an intricately woven tapestry of swelling string drones, shimmering pedal steel, and minimalist piano motives. The first strictly ambient solo offering from this incredibly versatile composer and musician reveals a delicate sense for rich, ruminant textures and fine-grained synth buzz, dispensing organic highs on tracks like opening movement "To See You Drift," the Polaroid-colored "Long Gone Canadian Summer," the meditative "A Conversation Between Friends," or the terraforming blues of "Lateral Decomposition." The iridescent quality of these recordings almost appears to be born out of an auditory illusion, with the arrangements seemingly evolving in time-lapse and slow-motion at the same time. The natural, wholesome flow of the album certainly finds itself influenced by Gibson's 2014 move to a 6000-foot mountain community called Idyllwild. While two of the tracks on The Evening Falls were started in LA, Gibson found that in order to fully realize them and the rest of the album, he needed to transition away from inner-city roaming. "My wife and I heard the calling of the mountains for a while -- getting deeper into meditation and nature and a slower way of life. There've been beatless tracks on many of my albums, but this is the first full-scale ambient album I've done . . . I simply needed to find the right focus." The result is a masterful addition to Kompakt's growing series of Pop Ambient full-lengths, presenting the fully formed vision of a veteran producer who never lost his taste for sonic adventure. CD includes one extra track.

WEATHER REPORT Rockpalast, Offenbach 1978 2CD/DVD
"By September of 1978 Weather Report's headlining status afforded them the opportunity to play a very long set amounting to two hours in length. Given the previous year's success with the poll winning Heavy Weather album one might have expected them to concentrate on this more or less exclusively, but instead, fans were treated to material from right across the bands career and solo spots by everybody. 'Black Market' opens this concert and straight away it's apparent that the energy level is high and the relaxed pace of the studio version has been superseded by a slightly faster tempo. An explosive tenor and drum duet by Shorter and Erskine also forms part of this and must have surely put an end to the feeling in some quarters at the time that the saxophonist was no longer at his best. Also on board were flamboyant electric bassist Jaco Pastorius, a genuine innovator, and newly arrived drummer Peter Erskine a master technician brought into the group to add more of a jazz feel. Joe Zawinul was keen to stress that Weather Reports music was their music, a product of the group's identity, and not simply jazz-rock akin to that of many bands of the time. Although he was known for his strong opinions it's clear that no other group mixed improvisation, formal structures and electronics quite like them. One night in Germany is clear proof of this."

DORJI & SHANE PARISH, TASHI Expecting LP
"Much has been made of the nesting compulsion that overtakes expecting parents. It's fair to suggest that this album owes its name to the fact that Asheville NC residents Tashi Dorji and Shane Parish were both looking forward to parenthood when they made it, and not much of a stretch to say that it expresses something that they both had to say before the babies arrived. That message is one of two guys bonding over shared understandings. They've been known each other for over a decade, during which time they've played both as a duo and as parts of larger ensembles. Both play guitar, and while their discographies map quite disparate interests, they share a devotion to the guitar as a vehicle for improvisation. The eight improvisations that make up Expecting grow out of a dynamic of sharing -- one fellow shows up with a tuning and maybe a string preparation, the other works out a response, and out of that comes not only a piece of music but a renewal and confirmation of a relationship in which two humans share what they love. Expecting parents tend to be anxious ones. Titles like 'Dust Of Dust,' 'Storm Sinks Boat,' and 'Break Up' give the impression that Dorji and Parish weren't free from trepidation when they made Expecting, and the record's discordant moments back it up. Nowadays writers are quick to lay the term experimental music on anything dissonant. But while one could say that this music actually earns that much-abused term because it comes out of a process of proposal and problem solving, an emotionally truer term would be experiential music. It came out of Parish and Dorji's real time communion, and it is informed by their shared history. For them, making the music was an experience; playing the record imparts a different experience, one of receiving rather than making, but it still expresses a dynamic of exchange." --Bill Meyer, Berwyn, Illinois, USA, January 31, 2016

BAD BOYS BLUE My Blue World LP
My Blue World is the fourth studio album from German disco and synth-pop legends Bad Boys Blue and features the singles "A World Without You (Michelle)," "Don't Walk Away Suzanne," and "Lovers in the Sand." This would be the last album with original lead singer Trevor Taylor (aka Supa T). Though it was not nearly as big a chart success as some of their earlier and later albums, it's highly regarded among fans of Euro disco and Hi-NRG. The Fifth is the first Bad Boys Blue album without original lead vocalist Trevor Taylor. Original member John McInerney took complete control of the band at this point and is still to this day the only original member performing with Bad Boys Blue. The group toured extensively across Europe for this album, on the success of the singles "Lady In Black" and "A Train To Nowhere" and the album was a hit, especially in Eastern Europe where they remain hugely popular. Another Euro disco and synth-pop classic from Bad Boys Blue reissued by Mirumir.

LAWRENCE Yoyogi Park 2LP
Double LP version. Magical, mystical, and straight from the heart; following Until Then, Goodbye (2009) and A Day in the Life (MUSIQ 046CD/180LP, 2014), the Hamburg-based art curator, DJ, and producer Lawrence presents Yoyogi Park, the third part of an album trilogy for Mule Musiq in collaboration with artist Stefan Marx. The album explores the intersection of Lawrence's own ambient productions, acoustic sound experiments, and the driving force of the dancefloor. The artwork shows a 360-degree view of Yoyogi Park in the heart of Tokyo, which Stefan Marx created for a fanzine for Printed Matter's NY Art Book Fair in 2015. Beyond the gorgeous greenery of Yoyogi Park lies craziness and mystery, and behind Lawrence's abstract beats and compelling functionality lies a magical full-color palette of mind-expanding sounds. Some of the tracks on Yoyogi Park contain live samples of Sky Walking (Lawrence's band with Christian Naujoks and RVDS) and some incorporate field recordings of streets and parks, while other tracks are versions of previously released, dreamily sublime ambient tracks. A one-of-a-kind blend of varied, deep, widescreen, and star-crossed electronica, romantic and enchanting. Lawrence's excellent recordings seduce with in-depth house rhythm sensibilities while spreading otherworldly melodies. Once again, he produced these vividly immersive tracks on the road. Some he started in his cozy backyard studio in Hamburg; he crafted others between cities like Berlin, Buenos Aires, New York City, and Tokyo. They all share some analog warmth while spreading mystery and allure, coming together to form a compelling whole. And although the album is made for the dancefloor, its shimmering brilliance goes far beyond usual club music euphoria. Wonderful, compelling stuff that could be the perfect starting point for anyone interested in delving into Lawrence's unique world of intimate, subtly shifting grooves and tones -- an enchanting world where feelings unfold in rhythms and melodies.

GENERATION X Live At Sheffield LP
First vinyl release of this live show from December 1978, featuring mainly tracks from Generation X's first two albums and displaying all the angst and attitude of one of the original UK punk bands. 180-gram LP. "It is hard to realize that on December 10th, 2016, it will be 40 years since Generation X first took to the stage. I was the guitarist and Live At Sheffield is a recording from a later show in 1978, but still has the angst and rock'n'roll spirit that Generation X were known for. Always slightly apart from the initial punk movement with the good looks and fantastic playing, Generation X relished the live shows but up to the end of 1979, when I left the band, had only done a few tours of the United Kingdom, a couple of dates in Paris and a week in Japan. So the amount of people who actually saw Generation X live is pretty limited. Live At Sheffield gives you a chance to enjoy the sound of a Generation X gig (along with fake audience) and feel the power of what we did live. The songs are from the first two albums plus a strange medley of '100 Punks' and 'Kleenex' and the cover of 'Shakin' All Over'. Although the band only lasted three years, the music stands the test of time, and with Billy Idol's later success as a solo artist in America this recording has somewhat of an historical aspect. Billy continues to play quite a few of these songs live to this day and it may be interesting to compare, although comparisons are deadly. . . . At the time of this show Generation X had been on Top Of The Pops numerous times, but this was punk and nobody thought about anything but the moment. Playing live every night in a different town has a certain momentum, and like a great photograph, to capture a moment in time of rock'n'roll is just as visual. Play this loud, as Mark Twain once said about Wagner's music, 'It's better than it sounds'." --Bob "Derwood" Andrews

GENERATION X Sweet Revenge LP
The third LP by Generation X's original line-up, recorded in 1979 and unreleased until 1998. An essential piece in the discography of one of the original UK punk bands. 180-gram LP. "In early 1979 Generation X went to the English countryside to write and 'routine' the band's third album. We felt we had a new sound, simple songs delivered with more space than most rock'n'roll, so we went into Olympic Studios in Barnes, London and began recording with the house engineer, Doug Bennett, as co-producer. Most of the songs were recorded before our tour of Japan in June '79. On our return Billy came into the studio with an outline of a song called 'Dancing With Myself'. We went to work on it and pretty much finished it quickly and we felt it was the song to lead the album, a single I guess. . . . Then I left the band at the end of the year and carried the fuckin' stack of 1/4'' master tapes around the world for many years. A year or so later they changed the band name to Gen X and re-recorded four or five songs for the album Kiss Me Deadly. Billy later released the re-recorded version of 'Dancing With Myself' for his solo career in America and the rest is history. . . . After years in storage my tapes were nearing the end of their life, so I digitized them in order to save this lost treasure. I named the album KMD Sweet Revenge. Some time later the album was released in Germany, Japan, Spain and supposedly the USA, however the release in America was quashed until Capitol Records put out their own version within a 3-CD anthology of the band, using some different mixes of the songs from cassette tapes. The recordings are almost complete minus a few guitar solos and final mixes. Time on Generation X had run out, but this album clearly shows the direction the band were heading and is worth documenting and certainly worth playing. For your pleasure . . . Sweet Revenge." --Bob "Derwood" Andrews

RANDOMS ABCD/Let's Get Rid Of New York 7"
Individual replica reissues of the 14 7"s released on Dangerhouse between 1977 and 1979, including classic tracks by The Weirdos, Avengers, The Alley Cats, X, Black Randy, The Dils, The Bags. . . . Dangerhouse was one of the first independent labels to document the burgeoning West Coast punk rock scene of the late '70s. Although short-lived, its work provided a vital outlet for the bands and other participants and set a template for many to follow. All singles have facsimile sleeves and labels and come inside a clear plastic outer sleeve like the original releases. "Once upon a time (197?) in a magical kingdom called LA, there was a defect in the space/time continuum known as 'punk rock'. Only in such a depraved environment could Dangerhouse have existed. Dangerhouse, created by the triumvirate of yours truly, Pat "Rand" Garrett, and Black Randy, was a highly naive attempt to create a politically and artistically correct playground for the unique, nihilistic talents of the LA punk 'scene'. It was clear something needed to be done. In the beginning there was a lot of musical talent that was going to unrecorded waste. Whereas the English musicians had been set upon by some of the top producers in the business, the very lack of commercialism implicit in LA punk seemed to drive away potential resources. Those were culturally weird times, Saturday Night Fever and burned-out super group remnants filled the airwaves. Clearly SOMETHING was better than nothing. The early groups (like the Screamers, Germs, Weirdos, Black Randy) were very good at manipulating the local venue owners and press, and were able to almost immediately fill clubs and halls with folks who were just plain bored and curious. The Masque, KROQ, Farrah Fawcett-Minor's apartment behind the dirty bookstore, the Starwood, Whisky . . . I refer the reader to the insane, speedenhanced ravings of Claude Bessy in the early Slash magazine as there just isn't enough room for that kind of background. Suffice it to say that the scene had everything: every kind of self-abuse imaginable, negative social patterns, infighting, gender-fucking, etc. What needs to be talked about here are the musicians and other creative forces at work behind the scenes on the Dangerhouse product. Starting out, the studio was anywhere we could plug in; later, our home was the Kitchen Synch with the extremely copasetic Mike Hamilton as engineer. Here was a man who watched us accidentally pour a dark Heineken over a 16-track mixing console (installed that very day) without crying or punching out the culprit. Over the years, Mike patiently sat while irate punks insulted his intelligence, and offered great 8- and 16-track advice to Pat and me, refugees from a 4-track world. To Dangerhouse, and the fans, the sound quality was paramount. (Even KROQ demigod Rodney Bingenheimer stated in a period interview that Dangerhouse put out real records on real plastic!) The do-it-yourself aspect of the production and packaging spoke for itself. We created ideas for affordable products which set the pace for imitators, like the clear plastic-bag 45 sleeves (because traditional sleeves cost more than the records to be pressed) and the multi-color silkscreened picture disc used for 'YES LA'. Sad to say, the downturn of the record business in 1979 due to the soidistant 'oil embargo' hurt everyone in the record industry and made it too rough a row to hoe for Dangerhouse. Tough titty. These recordings still sound as powerful and relevant as the day they were cut. If you, Mr or Ms Consumer, care about creativity as opposed to the number of units shipped, it was a victory. And if there was ever a label that released cool shit, over which I'd rather have been A&R man/Prexy, it sure as hell doesn't come to mind." --David Brown

No. Inc. are Material Object and Atom TM. With their second album, titled G@ng5ta, they deliver a trippier version of ambient music, triggered by an unexpected genre collision appropriately numbered No. 911. Mixing arguably two of the most opposed ends of the musical spectrum -- traditional electronic ambient and gangster rap -- the artists create an urban soundscape for lysergic adventures in the concrete jungle. Starting off with a frozen gunshot sound, the album continues exploring where No. Inc. began their first album, Early Reflections (No. 900, 2014): floating textures and drones that create a dense journey through, in this case, the subconscious landscape of a West Coast gang member. With slightly less synthetic elements, such as the track "Street Texture 911" (which incorporates US police radio recordings and pays tribute to the works of Tetsu Inoue) G@ng5ta expands ambient music into truly unexpected realms. RECENT ARTS Recent Arts CD
Recent Arts is a duo formed by Chilean visual artist Valentina Berthelon and German musician Tobias Freund. Together they present live audio-visual shows ranging from experimental improvisations to works that are more aligned with the global electronic music club scene. Recent Arts manipulate sound and image in real time during their stage shows. The music is created and performed by means of an application based on Max/MSP. This application was developed by Max Loderbauer and Tom Thiel, and finalized based on ideas by Tobias Freund. It is a "Loop Based Computer Controlled Engine" that repeats and processes sounds in a free and natural way -- which feels like listening to the flowing water of a creek, or to the sound of the wind. Repetitions are constantly being modulated, and no patterns are the same. In addition, the musical structure is combined with a full range of analog synthesis to achieve a wide spectrum of frequencies.

Born in Canada, Fatima Camara was raised in a large Portuguese family where traditional song and dance were as integral to her family gatherings as food, laughter, and wine. Before We Sleep, her debut album, is as a collage of diverse musical influences that have defined each chapter of her storied life. Bass guitar lines wrought with the new-wave sound that marked her formative adolescence, drums that echo the electronic music she migrated to during her early adulthood in Toronto's dance music scene, and an overriding melancholy that signals the conflicted feelings she has when considering the thin layer of dust that has collected upon her chair at the family dinner table since she made her move to Berlin. Apart from music, Fatima appreciates happy accidents, blended horizons, and unlit corners.

CARLSON/MICHAEL STIRLING/DOUG THERIAULT, MATT Aakash LP
Aakash marks the debut recording of the Portland, Oregon-based trio of Matt Carlson (Golden Retriever), Michael Stirling (a disciple of the late Hindustani master Pandit Pran Nath and a student of Terry Riley), and Doug Theriault. Derived from live improvisational performances, the record finds Carlson's rich analog synthesizers joined by real-time processing of Stirling's lilting voice and Theriault's idiosyncratic guitar work and electronics. Dipping into a kind of liminal void, Aakash isn't just cosmic raga. It's a subtle journey; microvisions of inner terrain. Includes download code.

SAND His First Steps CD
Previously unreleased album by German trio Sand, recorded in 1972. His First Steps is a forerunner of Golem (ROTOR 006CD/LP/BLU-LP/PIC-LP), the legendary 1974 album from the cosmic and psychedelic genius that is Sand. After the split of P.O.T., the early Sand submerged as a threesome in the basement of Claudiusstrasse and built up an alchemical assembling shop, where they resurrected the archetypical Golem. Sand considered themselves as an exile community in a fascinating area -- full of distinctly bizarre energy. Cover painting by Babs Santini, 2009.

SAND Sylph Ballet CD
Previously unreleased album from the '70s by German trio Sand. Still living in the mythical landscapes, Sand not not only created Golem (ROTOR 006CD/LP/BLU-LP/PIC-LP, 1974), who was a being of the earth. Something else pulsated with a different energy of oscillation. The invisible beings of the air performed their dances. The Golem was large, mighty and of compact matter. He needed an external spirit to be navigated. Sylph creatures moved with the clouds and the wind -- from gentle breezes to violent storms, always sensitive to the chimes of the motions. The sylphs are the children of the moonlight as well as the elves with broken wings. The Sylph Ballet is riding upon ethereal horses and its airy spirit comes true in dawn levitation. There is something magical and inexplicable in creation, and Sand absolutely manifest these mysterious phenomena. Storytellers, musicians, shamans, geniuses -- Sand were known, at the end of the '60s, as P.O.T. (Part of Time). Then Sand -- Ludwig Papenberg, his brother Ulrich Papenberg, and Johannes Vester -- developed a more avant-gardist, proto-industrial, visionary, experimental approach, becoming a truly unique entity in the history of music. Not dependent on a classic krautrock style, Sand is nevertheless part of this movement of German cosmic/psychedelic bands, in addition to being the originators of proto-industrial musics. Johannes Vester: lyrics, vocals, guitar, VCS3, harmonium, collateral piano, natural brooklet. Ludwig Papenberg: guitar, drums, collateral piano, VCS3, bubbling brook. Ulrich Papenberg: bass, generator. Guest: Jörg Welz: grand piano. Mastered by Hervé de Keroullas. Layout by Frédéric Tacer. Cover painting by Babs Santini, 2009. CD in six-panel digipak.

SAND North Atlantic Raven CD
Previously unreleased album by German trio Sand, composed and recorded in 1973, '75, and '76. The once-croaking raven now flies silently over the ocean, higher and higher. Where are you rolling, sun-ball, and why don't you fall? The sandy Golem crumbled into dust. His brave struggle against the mighty forces of darkness soon dissolved in voiceless space. There is something magical and inexplicable in creation, and Sand absolutely manifest these mysterious phenomena. Storytellers, musicians, shamans, geniuses -- Sand were known, at the end of the '60s, as P.O.T. (Part of Time). VIVENZA Modes Réels Collectifs CD
Modes réels collectifs is the first work published in 1981 under the Vivenza banner, following Jean-Marc Vivenza's time with the bands Glace (1976) and Mécanique Populaire (1979). It represents a genuine manifesto that would become emblematic of all Vivenza's subsequent work. By suggesting, from philosophical and sonic points of view, an idea of opening to the reality directly inspired from Futurist theories, Vivenza was presenting what he had brought from his relationship with machines and sounds of factories, to evoke the brutal concrete of the heavy industry world. This album shows this concern about participating in the energy of the future, with the reciprocal mediation linked to the productive activity of the world. As Vivenza puts it, "By working and through the strengths of work, in the sonorous magma of the industrial society, at the heart of the forges and weirs, of the rolling mills and power stations, reactors and artificial intelligence, nature reveals its dynamic characteristic. The power of machines, and of industry in general, are the truth of the world." Thus, industry and technique are what we could call the principle of any reality, because, like the Futurists said, "The machine is indeed the richest symbol of the mysterious human creator strength" (Enrico Prampolini, Ivo Pannaggi, and Vinicio Paladini, Manifesto of Mechanical Art, 1923). VIVENZA Réalité De L'Automation Directe CD
Originally released in 1983. "Bruitism is the representation of a living, biological body, not unrelated but on the contrary intimate to the substance. The nature/technique gap is totally, in The Art of Noises, the most accomplished form of a reconciliation with industrial mechanization. By highlighting the autonomy of the dialectical movement in its inaugural tension, bruitism reestablishes this relationship with the pure objectivity of the substance, which is the cornerstone of the program of futurism and remains more than ever valid for the future of all futures. The sonorous world, the noises of life, are not just a simple residual environment but the material of a new art, The Art of Noises! Luigi Russolo declares: 'In a few years the engines of our industrial cities can all be skilfully sounded so as to make from each factory an exhilarating orchestra of noises'. The futurist objective is 'a will for a back to original forces', it finds in bruitism the most intense form of a participation to the universal energy of the being of the world" --extract from L'art des bruits futuristes (The Art of Futurist Noises), Vivenza, 1982. Since his first works in the mid-'70s, Jean-Marc Vivenza has theoretically and politically linked himself with the Italian Futurists and Russian Constructivists, and qualifies his music as "bruitist futurist" rather than "industrial." He enacts the re-appropriation of noise as a formal plastic aid. He explores the field of perspectives that the plastic-acoustic material offers and works on a concept that he calls "the objective materiality of noise," basing his work on the Futurist thesis of Luigi Russolo proclaimed in his 1913 manifesto The Art of Noises. He is then the first, between 1976 (with the band Glace) and 1979, to build a bridge between the thesis of Luigi Russolo and our time. The originality of Vivenza lies in his use of sonorous industrial material in the literal sense of the word (machines, workers in action, factories). Noises and machines recorded and mixed by Vivenza in Grenoble, France, 1982. Mastered by Hervé de Keroullas, 2011. Graphic design by Matthieu David, 2011. Photography from Vivenza's personal archives. CD in six-panel digipak.

VIVENZA Veriti Plastici CD
Veriti Plastici, the third part of the first works of Vivenza, was recorded and completed in 1983 and represents a fundamental step in the definitive formalization of the bruitist perspective. Made of objective industrial atmospheres, this recording is the bridge between the pure experimental approach and the rigorous structuring of the works that would follow (including Fondements Bruitistes in 1984 (ROTOR 033CD/AB-LP/ABRED/DC-LP/DCRED) and Réalités Servomécaniques in 1985 (ROTOR 014CD/RED-LP)). The release of Veriti Plastici was accompanied by a text, Le Programme Futuriste De Retour A La Realite Materielle, which describes Vivenza's theory of bruitism as follows: "The futurist objective, which is 'a will to a return to the original forces', will thus find in bruitism the most intense form of a participation to the universal energy of the being of the world. Bruitism is a radical attempt of the carrying out of the futurist project in its will of participative communion to the dialective future sensed in the mechanical power of industry. The attentive examination of bruitism on each machine generating a noise-sound, reveals an organic vision of the industrial and urban network: 'the large and fabulous breathing of a sleeping town is so strange, wonderful, fascinating. . . . a breathing only interrupted now and then by the whistle of a train; a breathing which is the result of all different industries (electric power stations, gas factories, train stations, printings, etc.) continuing their activities in the quiet nightlife' [Luigi Russolo, The Art of Noises, 1913]. The transfigurative wave of the dialectic movement of the Vortex, 'the point of the highest energy' [Ezra Pound, Blast, 1914], expresses the vertiginous transparency of the abyss; only the knowledge-contact through the exercise of the decentering of the subject can offer the possibility of a uniting participation to this abysmal reality." Noises and machines recorded and mixed by Vivenza in Grenoble, France, 1983. Mastered by Hervé de Keroullas. Layout by Matthieu David, from pictures, logo, and text from Vivenza's personal archives. This is the first-ever release of the entire 1984 Fondements Bruitistes session. HOLLY & THE CRICKETS, BUDDY The "Chirping" Crickets LP
Lubbock, Texas's most celebrated sons, Buddy Holly and his group, The Crickets, released this, their debut album way back in 1957. Though it's nearly 60 years old, the sounds are familiar to most everyone who has not been living under a rock. If you want only one taste of the pure and true brilliance of Buddy Holly, this record is it. Its track listing reads almost like a greatest hits album; "Oh Boy!," "Not Fade Away," "Maybe Baby," and "That'll Be The Day" are all found on this LP. Buddy would be dead less than two years later, in that infamous plane crash of February 3, 1959, "The Day The Music Died," but his music lives on, immortal. An essential American rock and roll staple on Rumble.

BLUMM & NILS FRAHM, F.S. Tag Eins Tag Zwei CD
Followers of the Sonic Pieces catalog will already be familiar with both F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm, as well as their acclaimed work as a duo. But although it finds them making use of familiar instruments, their third full-length collaboration, Tag Eins Tag Zwei, manages to add a new tone to their already unique language. By trading in the post-processed sound sculptures that made up the two preceding albums for intimate pieces of improvisation, this collaboration merges into the most soothing and life-affirming recording the two have produced so far. Guitars and toys flow next to piano and harmonium in an organic combination, shaping nine pieces that abnegate any common categorization. Incorporating classical, jazz, and folk influences, it's the genuine use of tricks and delays that lift these improvisations above the ordinary and make them both incredibly relaxing and exciting at the same time. The result is a perfect example of how immediacy can be the most powerful approach to creating music. Based on a remarkable understanding of each other's phrasing, the pair of sessions that form this album shows two vivid artists at the peak of their game -- unconditional spontaneity. CD in handmade cardboard sleeve.

Here, Moiré pares down his songs to their essential elements -- quick blips of sound, minimalist rhythms, quick flashes of textured vocals. On "Brixton," the same two-note phrase blinks over and over, and the song's use of symmetrical structures slowly becomes hypnotic the longer it goes on. The title-track is more hectic, with its darting pointillist electronics and dry, steady rhythm. "Red Circle" features Bones.

VA An Anthology of Turkish Experimental Music 1961-2014 2CD
This anthology features works by Turkish artists ranging from the electronic music of the 1960s to all forms of experimental music of the 2010s. This is Sub Rosa's second release exploring experimental music by zone or sphere of influence. The constellation built between 2000 and 2012 with Sub Rosa's seven-part Anthology Of Noise & Electronic Music continues to expand through the Early Electronic collection (consisting mostly of tracks composed between the '50s and the '80s) and these "area anthologies," this one released following An Anthology of Chinese Experimental Music 1992-2008 (SR 265CD). This collection covers a much wider time-frame than its predecessor; this is because, in Turkey, two exceptional composers emerged very early on to show the way to future generations that then followed in a piecemeal fashion. Indeed, Bülent Arel and ?lhan Mimaro?lu did not have immediate followers. The explosion happened later, through the "serious music" of conservatories and universities (Cenk Ergün, Koray Tahiro?lu, Mehmet Can Özer) and the electronic/noise music avant-garde (Nilüfer Ormanl?, Utku Tavil) -- the great wave of the 2000s and 2010s. The beauty of this collection lies in its multifaceted nature; it features purely formal music, hijacked electronica, remnants of Turkish harmonies, and pieces that are more conceptual or even political (vaguely or strongly) in design. Batur Sönmez and Erdem Helvac?o?lu have managed to capture this diversity and energy. And it so happens that this profusion of music, related to an urgency to live and think freely, is blooming within an increasingly stifling space. Call it the spectacular beauty of an explosion. Most of the material included here has not been released before. Includes works by Bülent Arel, ?lhan Mimaro?lu, Erdem Helvac?o?lu, Batuhan Bozkurt, Alper Maral, Batur Sönmez, Cenk Ergün, Korhan Erel, Sair Sinan Kestelli, Koray Tahiro?lu, Mehmet Can Özer, Nilüfer Ormanl?, Utku Tavil, Asaf Zeki Yüksel, SIFIR (Zafer Aracagök), Cem Güney, Tuna Pase, 2/5BZ, Cevdet Erek, Reverie Falls On All, and Burçin Elmas, as well as CD-only works by Tolga Tüzün, Ba?ar Ünder, Osman Kaytazoglu, Volkan Ergen, Mete Sezgin, Mors, D2GG, and Meczup.

ROB(U)RANG Ofo CD
Contrasting directions from techno to modern tribal, the Rob(u)rang project deals in experimentation, repetition, and the use of rhythm boxes. Gabriel Séverin initiated Rob(u)rang in 2000, but has only released handful of albums since. Here, Séverin draws his inspiration from yorùbá spells (collected in Nigeria and Benin) initially designed to cure diseases or solve problems. The results resemble raw Afro-rock full of lively percussion (warming up the chill of drum machines) led by a possessed, trance-inducing voice. Now and then, lighter moments and dub-like surprises pop up, pleasantly cooling things down before entering the next entranced state. On this recording Séverin is assisted by a few multi-instrumentalist friends: Xavier Klaine (Winter Family) on organs, Alain Lefebvre (Digital Dance, The Durutti Column, Tuxedomoon) on percussion, Quentin Hanon (aka Johnny Superglu, Fan Club Orchestra) on bass and guitar, Gil Mortio (Joy As A Toy, collaborator of Pierre Vervloesem) on bass and guitar, Laurène Laroche (Babelouze) on flute, and Céline Mouffe on clarinet. The booklet contains all the texts in yorùbá with their English translations. Gabriel Séverin (born 1963) is a founder and member of a string of bands including Ultraphonist, Babils, Dead Hollywood Stars, Jardin d'Usure, Logatomistes, Moonsanto, Silk Saw, and more. Séverin explores several musical styles and various artistic disciplines. He is fascinated by obscure avant-gardes (in 2009 he released an album of his own interpretations of raw literature and writers like Henri Michaux). He works as a mastering engineer for several labels and records, mixes, and produces many artists.

CONRAD WITH FAUST, TONY Outside The Dream Syndicate LP
Repressed; LP version. "Violinist, composer and filmmaker Tony Conrad started his career in New York in the early 1960s. As a member of the Theater of Eternal Music (a.k.a. the Dream Syndicate) alongside John Cale, La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela and Angus MacLise, he participated in now-legendary and often legendarily loud drone performances with many pieces having no beginning and no end. During a fateful trip to Germany in 1972, Conrad met with avant-rock visionaries Faust and made the very first record to bear his name. Outside The Dream Syndicate, originally released in Europe only in 1973, is a stunning debut. Two side-long tracks -- 'The Side Of Man And Womankind' and 'The Side Of The Machine' -- show just how far Conrad had moved beyond his minimalist peers. Werner Diermaier's repetitive drum beat and Jean-Hervé Peron's stripped-down bassline conjure a tense, ascetic groove, while Conrad's seamless violin, initially so controlled, reveals a surprising adaptability. The music shifts almost on a subliminal level, pushing and pulling to the drone's internal pulse. It is hard to imagine Conrad's trajectory from downtown Manhattan to a farmhouse in the German countryside that ultimately resulted in Outside The Dream Syndicate, yet no other record captures -- so completely and instantly -- the intersection of avant-garde and rock forms. Outside The Dream Syndicate remains ahead of and bracingly outside of its time. This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release have been carefully been carefully mastered from the original master tapes and include liner notes by musician Jim O'Rourke and author Branden W. Joseph."

HORSEPOWER PRODUCTIONS Crooks, Crime & Corruption CD
Horsepower Productions and their ever-present head honcho Benny Ill, revered in underground music circles as among the key early innovators of dubstep, return with their much-anticipated fourth album, Crooks, Crime & Corruption. An ambitious and varied work, it finds the group expanding their horizons and broadening their sound palette while maintaining the unparalleled production chops that first made them such a force in the scene. Their pioneering early singles sought to strip UK garage of its slickness, adopting a stripped-down, dubbed-out approach that emphasized roughness and powerful bass. This was music for real heads, not commercial dancefloors. When You Hold Me/Let's Dance launched the seminal Tempa label in 2000, and even the term "dubstep" was first popularized in a 2002 XLR8R cover story about Horsepower. Their 2002 debut album In Fine Style (TEMPA 001CD) stands as one of the finest documents to emerge from the UK underground, while To The Rescue (TEMPA 003CD), which followed in 2004, saw the group play a vital role in shaping the direction of the music they had made possible. Crooks, Crime & Corruption is certainly the most sonically varied and rhythmically diverse Horsepower album yet. If previous Horsepower records were defined in part by a commitment to darkness, then Crooks, Crime & Corruption sees a certain amount of light emerging through the cracks. Just check the summer BBQ vibes of "Bak 2 NY" or the balmy shuffle of "Kuriosity.'" At the other end of the spectrum lie the sticky weed paranoia and industrial clank of "Ruf Justice," all gunfire and sirens over punishing sub-bass. "Good Ole Dayz" and "Justify" -- originally released together as a 12" in 2011 (TEMPA 059EP) -- both appear here in new versions. "Good Ole Dayz" marries dubstep wobble with an explosion of color, while the decidedly psychedelic "Justify" (a collaboration with guitarist Harry Keyworth) falls somewhere between Hawaiian surf and Morricone Western. Immaculately constructed and immaculately realized, Crooks, Crime & Corruption draws from numerous facets of the UK underground and further afield for a compelling, wholly immersive journey. ZEMI17 Zipper EP 12"
Zemi17's first release for The Bunker New York, Impressions (BK 007EP, 2014), was a landmark release for the label, a record that brought the swirling, shifting sounds of minimalist music to the dancefloor. Zipper sees him expanding his musical palette considerably, in which his gamelan-derived sound design pushes further out toward the expanses of techno's realm. While gamelan provides the foundation for the EP's sound design, Zipper is definitely a techno record -- the rollicking electro rhythms of "Trickles in the Dark" and the hypnotic, dark mood of "An Army of Crickets," for instance, will set dancefloors alight.

ATKINS & MORITZ VON OSWALD PRESENT BORDERLAND, JUAN Transport CD
Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald -- the two indispensable protagonists of the "Electric Garden" -- plug back into the wilderness. Transport brings together a set of studio-refined sequences aimed at colonizing some of the dark energy that pulsates through those areas that are thoroughly electrified, even if not on the grid. The Detroit-Berlin axis triangulates to a third point that, like the atomic particle that lives in two places at once, flickers between a form of techno-charged ambience and a futuristic club-jazz that cannot be broken down into constitutive parts. Borderland remains caught in a state of enraptured stillness, invisibly moving between every imagined future for electronic sound making. The result: a font from which springs serene and exhilarating musical ideas that vibrate with refined energy for 60 seconds in every minute. CD version includes exclusive transitions.

IKIN, KANE Modern Pressure LP
You might not have come across Melbourne's Kane Ikin before, but he's far from a newcomer. A member of experimental duo Solo Andata, Ikin also released material on Taylor Deupree's influential 12k imprint, working with a variety of different sounds and elements over the last decade. Modern Pressure is a milestone for Ikin, written at a trying time that was the producer's hardest financially but most creative musically. Selling equipment to pay the rent, Ikin wrote track-after-track in quick succession to hone his skills, using the process as both a form of escapism and reflection. The resulting album is a mirror of this struggle, a collision of stomach-churning bass and searing percussion that overwhelms your senses, staying with you long after the music has subsided. Ikin manages to harness a variety of influences, folding the sound of early '80s industrial tapes and no wave with the relentless pulse of house and techno, the intense low-end of hardcore and the eerie mood of John Carpenter's most menacing soundtracks. It's an album with a defined narrative that looks to the past without ever losing sight of the future. Dark, shimmering and textured, Modern Pressure is an album for our era - damaged, but not without hope. Mastered & Cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 500 copies.

SATO & WOLFGANG DAUNER, MASAHIKO Pianology LP
Masahiko Satoh's fourth album is a duet with German pianist and composer Wolfgang Dauner. Dauner is one of the very early European avant-garde jazz pianists, and he recorded the first free jazz album in Germany back in 1964. Dauner played with Eberhard Weber and Jean-Luc Ponty, and in the late '60s, he experimented with choral music. Being a passionate innovator and experimenter, in 1970 he discovered electronic devices and started using them in his music. He experimented with ring-modulated Hohner clavinets and pianos and recorded several albums for ECM. During his Japanese tour in spring 1971, he met one of the most advanced Japanese pianists of that time, Masahiko Satoh. The five compositions on this album were recorded in Tokyo in March 1971, but were not released until that autumn. It's interesting that a few months later, Masahiko Satoh will record and release his best-known, and in some sense, legendary album, Amalgamation (ASH 3040CD) -- an eclectic mix of musical genres and sounds that was probably influenced by his earlier collaboration with Dauner. Pianology, released soon after Amalgamation, wasn't as strong in comparison, and stayed in its shade for decades. Pianology is a collection of freeform classical and jazz piano duo improvs, spiced with ring modulator sounds. Includes printed inner sleeve.

ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, THE At Fillmore East 2LP
2016 repress. Two 180-gram LPs with two bonus tracks. Considered by many to be one of the best live albums of all time, this classic album by The Allman Brothers Band, recorded at the pinnacle of their success, was a huge hit for the band. In 1971 The Allman Brothers Band was already one of the most popular groups in America, but by the time this album hit the streets their brand of Southern rock had become a national obsession. One of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time," it was the band's last with guitar hero Duane Allman, who was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year.

GAYE, MARVIN Let's Get It On 2LP
2016 repress. Two 180-gram LPs with 15 bonus tracks from the deluxe CD edition. Despite his huge success with his 1971 political concept album What's Going On, Marvin Gaye left social concerns behind for those of a more intimate nature with this 1973 album. Let's Get It On album broke new ground, gaining its place in history as one of the most sexual albums ever recorded, laying the basis for every slow jam ever after, and making Gaye both socially concerned and sexy -- a potent commercial combination.

2016 repress. 180 gram picture disc LP in deluxe sleeve. The Velvets legendary debut album with the Warhol's Banana cover art printed on vinyl. Although Warhol, who was listed as producer on the album, allegedly gave the Velvets free reign over their sound, it was on his insistence that Nico performed on this album. However, this does not detract from the fact that when this album was made the Red Sea parted, and the Velvet Underground crossed into the Promised Land.

LITHICS Borrowed Floors LP
"Lithics is a four person minimalist punk band from Portland, Oregon formed in late 2014. Over the last year and a half they have refined a sound focusing on interlocked bass and drum rhythms paired with shrill guitar counterpoint and stark female vocals. While counting Wire, The Fall, Devo, Pylon, The Shadow Ring, and Captain Beefheart's Magic Band as reference points, the band's concerns are contemporary and urgent. An injection of uptight, nervous energy into the reverb drenched complacency of today's musical underground."

UMILIANI & I SUOI OSCILLATORI, PIERO Il Mondo Dei Romani LP
First vinyl reissue. Limited edition of 500 orange LPs (vinyl only; no digital release). Remastered from the original reels. The sought-after experimental gem Il Mondo Dei Romani, by soundtrack and avant-garde maestro Piero Umiliani, is now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1972. Originally recorded for a TV documentary about ancient Rome and released on Umiliani's Omicron label, Il Mondo Dei Romani finds Umiliani experimenting with electronic instruments (Suoi Oscillatori or "his oscillators") to offer a fascinating rendition of what synthesizer-based avant-garde ancient Roman music would sound like. It's a weird and extremely hypnotizing retro-futuristic experience of faux cithara, lyre, organ, and trumpet sounds driven by proto-techno sequences and minimalist rhythms. This brilliant electronic oddity is the perfect companion to We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records' previous Umiliani reissue, Tra scienza e fantascienza (WRWTFWW 003LP, 2015). Born in 1926, Piero Umiliani began his career as a jazz pianist (occasionally recording with Chet Baker) and started working on film soundtracks in the late '50s. Known as the man who brought jazz to Italian cinema, he left his mark on a long series of notorious giallo and mondo movies, soft sex films, and Eurospy thrillers, garnering praise for mastering sleazy funk, experimental electronica, and jazzy themes, and making a name for himself among his peers, including Ennio Morricone or Riz Ortolani. It was with the 1968 Italian mondo film Sweden: Heaven and Hell that Umiliani landed his biggest hit, "Mah Nà Mah Nà" (originally "Viva la Sauna Svedese" ("Hooray for the Swedish Sauna")), which would later be used on Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, The Benny Hill Show, and many more.

SCHWARTZ, BERNIE The Wheel CD
By the time he released this solo album in 1970, Bernie Schwartz was a veteran of the Hollywood music scene, having collaborated with The Everly Brothers on some unsuccessful singles, written songs for The East Side Kids and The Yellow Payges, and played with psych-pop band The Comfortable Chair. Co-produced with Wesley Watt and Bill Lincoln of Euphoria, The Wheel effortlessly spans wild psychedelic rock and gentle ballads. Expertly written, played, and sung, it's a lost classic, reissued here for the first time.
