LEHAR FEAT. RUSH MIDNIGHT Number One Hero 12"
Italian producer Lehar follows releases on Connaisseur Recordings with his debut on 2DIY4. "Number One Hero (feat. Rush Midnight)" is truly emotive, with delicate synth melodies and warm, lush chords adding heartfelt vibes to the punchy drums. The remix by Musumeci, who runs his own Engrave LTD label and gets support from Dixon and Âme among others, is much more stripped back and reworks the track into a broody, rubbery, fulsome house cut. Peter Pardeike (a Cologne-based producer who has often worked with Marcus Worgull) goes just as deep with his remix adding a sense of elegance to the groove with angelic pads.

DAVID J WITH FEDERALE AND FRIENDS The Day That David Bowie Died 10"
David J with Federale and Friends present a tribute to David Bowie. Below David J expresses how it happened: I purchased Blackstar on the day of it's release. The album blew me away. The following night David Bowie left the planet. In a state of shock I played the new album for the second time. Listening to it in a strangely exalted state I was struck by Bowie's incredibly complex swan song. By the end I was weeping copiously. Those tears ended up in "The Day David Bowie Died". I recorded it the next day.

ERI, CHIEMI Chiemi Eri CD
A magical mixture of traditional min'y? songs and Latin jazz elements. With its second release, Akuphone continues to explore Asia with an original compilation of the work of Japanese singer Chiemi Eri, drawing upon 10"s released by the Japanese King label between 1958 and 1962. Includes exclusive liner notes and a rich calligraphed booklet with romanized lyrics. Chiemi Eri (1937-1982) grew up in a musical family and began a career as a singer on US military bases when still a teenager, becoming famous for her performances of classics from the American postwar musical repertoire. At the age of 14 she recorded the song "Tennessee Waltz" with King Records, which turned out to be the first of many successes. Chiemi Eri is one of the most famous Japanese singers of the 20th century, more precisely of the Sh?wa era (1926-1989) corresponding to the reign of Emperor Sh?wa, known outside Japan by his personal name Hirohito. Both a singer and an actress -- she appeared in more than 50 films and many stage plays -- Eri definitely made a mark on the Japanese postwar cultural landscape, along with fellow singer-actresses Izumi Yukimura and Hibari Misora (collectively nicknamed "the three sisters"). Their success can be connected to the cultural opening of Japan, which, although initiated a century before, accelerated with the US military occupation of the archipelago (1945-1952). This period saw the import of popular musical styles including jazz, bebop, swing, and mambo, as well as the development of the hybrid kay?kyoku style, a delicious mix of so-called Western music with Japanese music. The work of Chiemi Eri documented here combines vocal jazz, Latin rhythms, and Japanese folk in an original musical syncretism. Supported by Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys, the oldest and most prolific Latin jazz group in Japan, Chiemi Eri sings themes, in Japanese, mainly taken from traditional folklore. Thus, the drums and brass of the Cuban arrangements are mixed with rich min'y? folk songs, which celebrate every region, every local tradition, and every event with a particular song or dance. Chiemi Eri also reveals the vocal prowess specific to min'y?, in particular the kobushi, a style of melisma (the technique of singing a single syllable of text while moving between several different notes in succession). Somewhere between Ella Fitzgerald and Celia Cruz, Chiemi Eri can also be associated with Serge Gainsbourg, who yielded to the mambo revolution as soon as the late 1950s.

OFRIN Ore CD
Necessity is the mother of invention. Creativity theorists would now most likely identify frustration as a driving force for creative activity. Ofrin flips this notion on its head. What drives the Berlin-based Israeli is the creation of an absence. She offers her creativity to serve the art of omission. In doing so, she proves herself as a master of the art. Ore, produced by fellow Albumlabel artist T.Raumschmiere, is defined by the musical elements it lacks, causing tension and drive throughout. Artists often tend to play into listener's expectations, but Ofrin refuses to fall victim to that practice. Her fourth album opens with "Best Request," which might be called a new form of EBM -- something akin to disembodied electronic body music, as contradictory as that may sound. Orchestral hits, filter progressions, and saw-tooth bass create an unmistakable '80s sound that will warm the heart of every self-respecting old school waver. The lack of beats is what defines this piece, catching the listener off guard and causing a slight abstraction. This variant theme occurs throughout the entire album. "Direction Eclipse" is a dark ballad drenched in trip-hop nostalgia, taking the best from the genre. Ofrin achieves an orchestral grandeur without pathos. Her clear yet never predictable melody stands alone without any orchestral backing as it is forced into modesty, virtually intimate. Ofrin resists the temptation to overload the piece with strings, making it a dark, delicate lullaby. We do get a "proper" EBM track in the end with a slapping snare and metallic synth-bass. Ofrin even takes on the classic ragamuffin style, opting for a barebones approach of pure vocals, throbbing synth, and a noise brass groove. Ofrin uses simple arrangements to great effect, lulling the listener into a false sense of security before taking it all away. Ofrin is the master of her own voice, not showing off any flourishes for their own sake of it, and exercising restraint at all times. She avoids the excessive use of expressive bel canto techniques in favor of unusual melodies. Her voice is cool and composed. Her vocals are confident and incisive -- free of vanity.

JOASIHNO Meshes CD
"I always have a spatial vision of music," says Cico Beck, mastermind of Joasihno and member of The Notwist and Aloa Input. Sitting in his basement studio among self-made synthesizers, records, and weird instruments, he points at a tiny robot beating an electronic drum: "That's one of my new musicians." Alongside member and co-producer Nico Sierig, the band is accompanied by a robot orchestra. But first things first. The third Joasihno album, Meshes, is a spectacular transformation. Cico Beck took off for Berlin to meet co-producer Tadklimp one spring night in 2015. Some ecstatic sessions later, the vision was evolving, captured on opener "Nuh Nuh," an experimental electronic piece winding into infinity with a friendly grin, reflecting the amplitude between modular synthesizers and Fisher Price keyboards. Once you're under the hypnosis of this soft monster, you are floating peacefully into the new world of Joasihno's Meshes. Despite a plethora of oscillating ideas and acoustic bubbles, Joasihno never lose touch with the listener, while sailing placidly through all aspects of Beck's vision of electronic anti-pop. The entertaining Meshes features another nine sparkling miniature gems, simultaneously complex and accessible, melancholic and hilarious, bright and deep. The music breathes ideas of smart UK garage-philosopher Four Tet, the crazy street composer Moondog, and some sort of Nils Frahm approach -- and, of course, pop music. Even if most tracks deny structures and rules of pop composing, they are always interacting with pop -- sometimes with a twinkling eye, sometimes in a deep lust for destruction. "In the end I found out, that I was approaching my own roots, the vision I had when I started Joasihno. I wanted the music to be more raw, intuitive and playful." From this perspective, Meshes is some kind of liberation for him Cico Beck. "I had a good time ignoring popular music," he says with a grin on his face. His previous album -- We Say: Oh Well (2011) and A Lie (N 033CD/LP, 2013) -- were situated in the space between Iceland and Africa. Meshes puts a new spot on his musical map: New York, home of great magicians like Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Raymond Scott. The transformation to the complex electronics of Meshes is both harmonious and unavoidable. Artwork by Aslak Gurholt Rønsen of Yokoland.

METAL URBAIN Panik 7"
"Meet the inventors of synth-punk: France's Metal Urbain! It all started with this record; at the time they called it "electro-punk." Out of print since 1977, the long vanished Metal Urbain debut returns! Backed with two guitars--no drumkit or bass--the band fired angry French-language vocals over scathing mechanical noises using their mother tongue as a weapon like no one had before, and few have since! Their influence in their home country was so huge that a tradition of homegrown drum-machine punk bands continues to this day. Some like Berurier Noir and Ludwig Von 88 would become much bigger then Metal Urbain, but none were as nasty. Jello Biafra, who discovered the band while traveling as a "teenage hippie" in France, says: "As far as I'm concerned, Charles de Goal, Kas Product, Ludwig von 88 and Berurier Noir, and even America's Big Black, Digital Leather and the even-more-extreme Atari Teenage Riot owe their very existence to Metal Urbain." Alternative Tentacles is proud to offer this rare 7-inch as a one-time special release exclusively on Record Store Day. Limited to 1,000 copies, it is only a teaser of what will be a three-volume LP Metal Urbain reissue series by the label, which will include 1980's Les Hommes Morts Sont Dangereux, 2006's J'Irai Chier Dans Ton Vomi (produced by Biafra) and 2008's Creve Salope. This is no longer nostalgia, but once again a band of the future, sure to appeal to fans of Suicide, Killing Joke, Ministry, Berurier Noir and Atari Teenage Riot. Engarde!"

VA Dialectic EP 12"
Jerome Sydenham opens the technological fray with the title track "Dialectic". Deep swinging rhythms coupled with a deeply rooted dub vocal truly define its essential neoteric sensibilities. Jerome Sydenham's remix of Macroism's "Drone" is a prime example of take no prisoners Berghain Techno. The B-side introduces the sophomore single from Non Reversible. The track "Kuro" is absolutely unapologetic in its discharge of nebulous dark thunder techno. On the last cut, Jerome Sydenham gets back behind the splicing desk, breaks out the razor blades and deftly edits the Echoplex classic "Pitch Break". The result is transcendent hypnotic techno bliss.

BRANCA, GLENN Symphony No. 13 (Hallucination City) For 100 Guitars CD
"Glenn Branca's work as a composer spans music for experimental rock bands, large ensemble instrumentals for electric guitars, 16 symphonies, chamber ensemble pieces, an opera, a ballet, choral works and music for film, dance, theater &installation art. Now considered by many to be one of the most influential living composers (both in the fields of alternative and experimental rock, as well as contemporary classical music), Branca's work has inspired and influenced two generations of composers and musicians, major rock stars, Academy Award winners, and Pulitzer prize composers. His animated style of conducting has recently begun to change perceptions about the role of the conductor in serious music performance. Branca is the inventor of The Harmonics Guitar and a theory of music based on the Harmonic Series as well as various tuning systems. He has designed and/or built many of the instruments used in a number of his pieces. He is also a founder of The No Wave Movement that started in downtown NYC during the late 70's that has now become, after many decades, an international movement in the underground music scene."

MCTELL, BLIND WILLIE Atlanta Twelve String (Colored Vinyl) LP
Stereo reissue on colored vinyl. Originally released in 1972. "Manufactured by Rhino Records. Produced under license from Atlantic Recording Corp." "In 1949, a brief flurry of interest in old-timey country blues resulted in this 15-song session by Blind Willie McTell for the newly formed Atlantic Records. Only two songs, 'Kill It Kid' and 'Broke Down Engine Blues,' were ever issued on a failed single, and the session was forgotten until almost 20 years later. McTell is mostly solo here, vividly captured on acoustic 12-string (his sometime partner Curley Weaver may have been present on some tracks), and in excellent form. The playing and the repertory are representative of McTell as he was at this point in his career, a blues veteran rolling through his paces without skipping a beat and quietly electrifying the listener. VA Cosmic Machine The Sequel: A Voyage Across French Cosmic & Electronic Avantgarde (70s-80s) CD
This sequel to the acclaimed Cosmic Machine compilation released in 2013 is another fantastic journey through time and space. At the time musicians were trying to capture the sounds of meteorites entering the terrestrial atmosphere thanks to machines developed by NASA engineers, a new generation of analog synthesizers enabled electronic music composers to take over the charts. It seemed the machines were definitely made to serve a radical avant-garde, and many years later, we're glad to be able to listen with this perspective, and most of all -- to dance to it. While moving your feet to Cosmic Machine The Sequel, you might identify Francis Lay, recognized as one of the best music composers in France, as well as Rosebud, who had the audacity to remix the main theme from the movie More, created by Pink Floyd. You'll also find "Les Soucoupes Volantes Vertes" from Heldon, the band led by electronic music visionary Richard Pinhas. Pascal Comelade, a friend of his, and worthy heir of the American minimalism also appears on this record, with a cold electronic sound called "Mouvement Décomposé d'Un Coup de Marteau." Arpadys, for their part, make an appearance with a more tribal and spatial track that will make you turn the volume up. Christophe's "Harp Odyssey," a track influenced by his collaborations with electronic master Jean-Michel Jarre. The father of electroacoustic music, Pierre Schaeffer used to head the Group of Musical Researches, a real musical laboratory in which both artists have worked together, trying to experiment with new sounds. Finally, the legendary "Pop Corn" instrumental from Anarchic System will bring some nice memories to the surface. Each and every one of the artists present on this compilation has dreamt of getting his one-way ticket to the moon. Some of them have managed to tread upon the land of our satellite, but one thing is for sure: all have participated in the spatial conquest on board of the Cosmic Machine. You have the right to get on it. Also includes tracks by Stereo, Queen Samantha, Nicolas Peyrac, Roger Roger, Video Liszt, Pierre Porte, Grand Prix, The Peppers, Joel Fajerman & Jan Yrssen, Moon Birds, Araxis, Georges Rodi, and Michel Magne.

PUBERTY Puberty CD
Puberty is initiated by hormonal signals from the brain to the gonads. Puberty (the band, the lifestyle, the etc.), though, belongs entirely to Susanna Welbourne and Lars Finberg. The band was hatched during a pocket of uncertainty, a time when signals seemed to point toward the half-promised oblivion of this duo's day-job in The Intelligence. During these uncertain 2010 evenings, the tag team launched Trainwreck, a monthly musical happening held at Seattle's deepest, dankest karaoke dive, the Orient Express. Dance, dress-up (drag?), and debauchery were of principal concern, with a soundtrack tailored to exalt such values. The Intelligence's assumed influences were swiftly replaced in Puberty by (as confirmed by Finberg) Trainwreck playlist regulars like U-Roy, Tones On Tail, Fun Boy Three, prime sleaze Roxy Music, and other grandiose splatterings. This was to be the inverse of what the duo had been doing musically in terms of mood and motivation. The Intelligence's airtight guitar jerking delivered with (ahem) casual professionalism was to be largely displaced by big-band arrangements with wildly unexpected turns, delivered via eccentric theatrics and playing upon classically sexual, sultry, and moody rock 'n' roll with odd atmospherics. Plus pink outfits. Puberty is the process of physical changes through which a child's body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction. A 2011 single appeared quickly via Canadian label Telephone Explosion, though Puberty's message was only briefly paraded before The Intelligence's domination program resumed. More weird hairs started to grow by mid-2015, though, as Finberg and Welbourne resurrected Puberty for a truly wholly album, assembling a wide array of co-conspirators both new and familiar. Perhaps most surprising is that neither plays a single note on the resultant recordings, offering only their vocals (which interplay wonderfully) and songwriting, allowing the band to, as Finberg puts it, "sound like itself." That self ends up being a mad provocateur. The album begins with beautiful orchestral fluttering ("Uptown") and concludes with very loud resolve ("Downtown"), tones that bookend a collection of superbly spacious songs that blast through expectation. "Parties" is both awkward and the gospel truth, built upon a simple riff that only occasionally visits the circus. "Nature Calls" boasts a blast of guitar that's so ridiculously jarring that an advisory should be present. That solo on "Skeletons"?!?!? Hear it, then die knowing you lived a life of true value. "Moonlight" is slinkingly cinematic and impossible to shake. And more, even. Always more.

NARDINI/EDDIE WARNER/ROGER ROGER, NINO Alexis Le-Tan & Jess Presents Studio Ganaro: Space Oddities (1972-1982) CD
During the '60s and '70s, three distinguished old gentlemen who had built their careers playing "made in France" exotic jazz -- Roger Roger (1911-1995), Nino Nardini (1912-1994), and Eddie Warner (1917-1982) -- met every evening in the Ganaro recording studio, playing like kids with their new toys: souped-up keyboards that looked more like prototypes of spaceships to explore the Milky Way. Flying high on whimsical and joyful inspiration, the improbable trio used their strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that, at that time, resembled the future of music; this set collects their productions from 1972-1982. With their library productions, Roger and Nardini made a clean break with rigid French traditions, via compositions featuring unexpected instruments like the harpsichord, marimba, and Ondioline, and, later the first analog synthesizers, oscillators, and other electronic keyboards. Nardini got deeply into musique concrète in the early '60s, as put forward by Pierre Schaeffer (who had just founded the Groupe de Recherches Musicales or GRM), popularized by Pierre Henry, and twisted by the whimsical Jean-Jacques Perrey. Roger and Nardini's Ganaro studio in Jouy-en-Josas, southwest of Paris, became the scene of magical nightly sessions of experimentation, in the company of their friend Eddie Warner. The acquisition of a Moog synthesizer brought these pioneers of electronic music to a new level. Roger Roger manufactured his own punch cards to invent new sounds. Then, in 1969, under the pseudonym of Cecil Leuter, he published the albums Pop Electronique and TVMusic 101 (with Nardini), two truly avant-garde "100% electronic" discs that anticipate the hegemony of machines in pop music, from space disco in the late '70s to the electro funk of the early '80s. The duo composed more than 40 albums (including the incredible Informatic 2000 (1982)) for specialized labels including Chappell Music, Southern Library of Recorded Music, Neuilly, L'Illustration Musicale (Eddie and Hannelore Warner's label, which published, notably, The Strange World of Bernard Fèvre in 1977), Mondiophone, Hachette, Musax, and Crea Sound Ltd. A veritable Atlantis of electronic music, rediscovered at the turn of the 21st century by electronic artists like Barry 7 of Add N to (X) with his Connectors series and Luke Vibert with his Nuggets compilations. Jess and Alexis Le Tan contributed a bit as well, digging up a few gems from "Ganaro's Nights," tracks composed with joy and humility by a merry trio of 60-somethings for whom making music was always a source of amusement and wonder. Includes 24-page booklet.

USE Chien d'la Casse CD
While some are still milking garage rock for all its cool like it will never dry out, the sleaziest alley cats are gone drinking somewhere else. Sitting on a cinderblock in the darkness of a cave in the suburbs, drinking warm beer, they'd rather witness the convulsions of a degenerating French song. Crafted with some second-hand gear and crumbs of poetry, this lament from the slums has Noir Boy George as its flagbearer and Jessica93 as companion of misfortune. You will hear it filling the air of tiny and barely sound-proofed venues, to the greatest and perverse delight of all those that the prevailing festivism has made wary, and not quite convinced that we live in the best of times. Nicolas Belvalette, known as Usé, doesn't really play the guitar, and it's barely a guitar anyway. He hits it, strikes the same chord ad nauseam, sticks a zinc cymbal on the neck, plays six instruments all at once. For a while Belvalette managed a concert venue in Amiens, l'Accueil Froid; when the place closed down, he ran in some local elections under the label of a fanciful party, le Parti Sans Cible ("The Party Without A Goal," roughly), and got 2.17% of the votes. He juggles with numerous projects (Headwar, Les Morts Vont Bien, Roberto Succo, Yvette Corner But, Sultan Solitude, and many others), and ekes out a practice in this musical interzone that is the great tribe of the DIY. Chien d'la Casse is the first album from his Usé solo project, which he initiated in 2011. Wild and aggressive, yet welcoming and touching in its bareness, the album demands surrender to the mighty power of the trance, embracing the regressive pleasure of the drums wreaking havoc, the flimsy jingles, the texts rhythmic as a Dada poem. Chien d'la Casse opens with the spiteful grunts of a pissed-off mongrel. Most of the album sounds like an ode to break-ins in garbage dumps with the sole purpose of banging on rusty cans until they burst. Only "Sous mes draps" echoes like a sad nursery rhyme, but leaves the realm of social realism to wander on the foggy heights of a fairground horror flick. "C'est si lisse" concludes the album with a fire alarm and some human barking, in an atmosphere of a black mass saturated with backward tapes; the dream ends up in chaos, it's almost day.

In 2012 he remixed pop icon Lana Del Ray's "Music On My Mind" into a perfect deep tech-house gem. "Disappear" by Kamran Sadeghi and Julia Govor slows down the tempo a little bit. UMILIANI AS TUSCO, PIERO Suspence Elettronica LP
Tusco is one of the many pseudonyms that legendary composer and producer Piero Umiliani uses to not overcrowd the synchronization market with his name. Umiliani was a well-known Italian soundtrack composer and jazz musician. He was one of the pioneers of styles such as exotica and lounge and used a lot of funk moves in his soundtracks, too. He also composed a lot of library albums, covering genres such as Spaghetti Western, Giallo, sex films, and documentaries. They were all self-produced in his mighty Soundworkshop Studio, equipped with the most advanced screening and editing systems of that time. Suspence Elettronica is a very rare experimental/ ambient electronic album from the early '80s with a great use of synthesizers. DER DRITTE RAUM Electric Friends CD
In 2016, 25 years after Andreas Krüger's Der Dritte Raum debuted on Sven Väth's Harthouse/Eye Q label, Krüger locked himself in his studio to create Electric Friends, an album that marks a shift toward pop following the 2015 Aydszieyalaidnem album (DDR 011CD/LP). On Electric Friends, Krüger's approach is to create a meeting place for techno rhythms and sonic experimentation from the perspective of the dancefloor, and a song-friendly one at that. Befitting the club setting, the tracks are long, but they're crammed with interesting stuff. This album is not a clinical exercise in the textural possibilities inherent in static; Der Dritte Raum tracks pop hooks and disco beats, and he even throws a couple of trance-influenced tunes into the mix. Opener "Electric Friends" is a brilliant tune with an extremely catchy lead synthesizer melody underpinned by a sharp electronic backing. The track is suitably catchy without ever approaching raucousness. Electric Friends reflects the wide range of Krüger's musical interests, and there are some homages. "Command Line" has the odd distinction of being a Front 242-influenced track (in terms of beats and synths). "Wasserstoff" is laid-back, starting with house chords before getting noisier. Up-tempo, danceable instrumental techno dominates the album, but the detours are frequent enough to make Electric Friends work as a varied, complete document of feel-good body music.

SHOSTAKOVICH, DIMITRI Music For Soviet Films LP
"Shostakovich's involvement with the cinema dates to his youth in Leningrad. Shostakovich composed his first screen score in 1929, three years after his swift rise to fame with his startling 'First Symphony', and the same year he began the Age of Gold ballet. The film was The New Babylon, a writer-director collaboration by Shklovski and Trauberg -- Michurin began in 1946, after the end of World War 2. By then, Shostakovich had achieved a formidable reputation as composer all over the world. And though the fact went unrecognized outside the Soviet Union, he was also an old hand at film composing. Shostakovich's score incomparably enhanced the motion picture -- A Year Is Worth a Lifetime, directed by the gifted Grigory Roshal, is a dramatization of the life and work of Karl Marx -- Grigory Roshal says of Shostakovich's contribution to the film: 'His music complemented and deepened the drama and served well the chief idea of the scenario - that of revolution, and of lofty service to broad humanity. The changing emotional states, feelings and reactions of Marx, the historic events of his times, and the lives of people around him - all were skillfully expressed in Shostakovich's music.'" -- from the original liner notes.

VARIANT Sequential Sleep [Volume One] 2CD
Sequential Sleep is an ambient two-part CD release made for dreaming, a sonic travelogue set in multiple locations within a winter forest. Everything in its natural environment is magnified with a 7:1 field recorder that captures the purest form of nature. Utilizing newly developed forms of FM, granular, and modular synthesis allowed this project to unravel in totally unexpected ways, like a visitor on foreign lands. Harmonic, angelic sequences continuously ebb and flow, slowly moving, like the tides meeting an estuary. Slowly evolving electric currents fluctuate in their purest essence, possessing the closest reach toward a pure analog sound experience. The interchange and combination of field recordings and spectrum of sounds via various 16-step sequences becomes alive, taking on an organic yet expansive and three-dimensional sound design that is out of this world. In the space-time continuum, every sound travels back down to earth within the spatial expanse, where recordings take on their own natural life in paradisiac existence. Based on the Sufi teachings of sound-arpeggiation and vibration, this music's vibrational pull of oscillating frequencies is founded on chord repetition, so too like chants that heal and allow the mind to reach meditative states. These immersive zones are the platform for a pure, rejuvenating, aqueous, trance-like experience of endless possibilities. Freely flowing and comforted, just as a mother's womb, the unconscious mind embraces all. These are songs that warmly envelop, soothe, and heal the soul. Nearly 2.5 hours long, both sonic journeys are adaptations of the other and the essence of the vision. And its sequences are steps into a dream, the steps into enchantment. Behind and beyond these recordings lies the inspiration of its mysticism: "When we pay attention to nature's music we find that every thing on the earth contributes to its harmony. The trees joyously wave their branches in rhythm with the wind; the sound of the sea, the murmuring of the breeze, the whistling of the wind through rocks, hills and mountains; the flash of the lightning, and the crash of the thunder, the harmony of the sun and moon, the movements of the stars and planets, the blooming of the flower, the fading of the leaf, the regular alternation of morning, evening, noon, and night, all reveal to the seer the music of nature." --The Mysticism of Sound and Music. The opium of openness by which all that dream, in wakefulness, or in sleep become one in the same dream. . . .

PAPER EYES Source Cognitive Drive - Transmissions 1996-1998 2LP
Documenting the prescient, early work of Gavin Russom upon moving from Providence to New York City in the late '90s, Source Cognitive Drive - Transmissions 1996-1998 is a compilation that reflects the visceral and overwhelming experience of an artist getting familiar with the data overload of a megatropolis and all its 24 hour thrills and poly-cultural topography. As Russom explains: "Arriving in New York City I found myself surrounded by an incredibly intense field of stuff to take in; late night radio mixes which featured distinctly New York sounds like freestyle and hip hop, clubs where house, techno and jungle played to drugged-out and/or completely sober sweaty crowds and beard scratchers alike, no wave, new wave, disco, afro-Carribean, art rock and experimental music records I would pick up at thrift shops or used record stores, abstract turntablism, video toasting, Japanese noise imports, house parties and basement dance caves, drag clubs, DIY theater productions, underground warehouse art and music events that would last days and feature vivid sound and visual excursions as well as breakfasts and conversation areas, squatter punk noise and drumming freak-outs, high-brow "new music" events and installations, video booths, burning buildings, car accidents, abandoned buildings, late nights, early mornings, Coney Island?" In effect, these tracks are a series of snapshots or graffiti-like doodles and sketches of the feelings and textures absorbed during late night dérives from his loft on 31st St. and around the Williamsburg locale, all channeled through a rugged set-up including: Sony TC-155 and TC-102 reel-to-reel tape machines a Silvertone guitar, ATUS AM100 mixer, Boss Harmonizer, a tiny Radio Shack mic, a Radio Shack Realistic Electronic Reverb, Casio MT-40, Univox Compac 2 and Casio SA-41. Imagery of policemen and truck drivers picking up prostitutes, along with the whistling signals of crack buyers and sellers on the corner, for example, become transcribed into screeching scrabble and blow-out paroxysms of noise, interspersed with passages of bittersweet, rudimentary melody and swaggering, drugged-up rhythms, recalling a prickly and often uncomfortable experience as sticky, fucked-up and phantasmagoric as finding yourself in a new city can be. Compiled by Not Waving. Mastered by Matt Colton. Includes download code.

PITA Get In CD
After the 2004 release of his last solo album, Get Off (HAPNA 019CD), Editions Mego founder Peter Rehberg embarked on a series of soundtracks for the French artist and choreographer Gisèle Vienne. Out of this collaboration were planted the seeds for the prolific KTL, Rehberg's guitar/computer duo with Stephen O'Malley. After a surprise return to live performance in 2015, Rehberg now returns to his Pita alias with the full-length document Get In. Get In extends the perennial Pita sound into a paradox of intimidation and beauty. "20150609 I" teases the juncture between the human and the tool, the improvised and the composed, and the analog and the digital. "Aahn" inhabits a field of electronic nebula, simultaneously inviting and alien. "Line Angel" could be a new form of minimalism for the post-internet crowd. "S200729" evokes an acid most splintered while "Mfbk" completes proceedings as an ambient drift underscored with classical overtones. Get In is a beautiful, engaging, and unsettling listen. A multi-headed hydra presented as the ultimate dystopian sonic journey. Recorded and mixed by Peter Rehberg at Twisted, Vienna, March 2015-January 2016. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, January 2016. Artwork by Tina Frank. Dedicated to Thomas Jerome Newton.

SKOTT, JAKOB All The Colours Of The Dust CD
Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt is back with the third installment in his "drums versus synthesizers" explorations. Fully indulging in this strange form of layered solo jams, these tracks are alive in a very real sense -- there's an organic vibe present in which monophonic synthesizers and polyphonic rhythms merge in a way you've never heard before. Any reference to other music and genres gets warped and turned on its head, quicker than you can catch onto it, as everything is weaved together in a fuzzed-out massive blanket of sound. Yet despite the roar and volume, there's a repetitive and meditative quality to these tracks -- not unlike that of free jazz, or, say, the hypnotic beat-driven music Miles created when he got into Stockhausen in the 1970s. There's even an earthy vibe ringing through the heavily modulated synths -- at times sounding more like soaring guitars or saxophones, or perhaps some unearthly rhythm-device that amalgamates rhythm and melody into one substance. This album is a result of a multicolored vision that has soaked up a wide range of styles and merged them into something fresh and radiant, and, frankly, quite groovy. Jakob Skøtt is the drummer in revered Danish experimental psych act Causa Sui and has previously collaborated with artists from Tortoise and Sunburned Hand of the Man. In a number of different outfits he has also released on such esteemed labels as Morr Music, Ghostly International, and Darla Records. Skøtt has also done exclusive live visuals and artwork for Amon Düül II, Earthless, Manual, cult actress Asia Argento, the Roadburn Festival, and El Paraiso Records.

DEFUNKT Live at Channel Zero CD
Trombonist Joseph Bowie came out of St. Louis' Black Artists Group (aka BAG), co-founded by older brother Lester Bowie. In his teens, Joe played with bluesmen Albert King and Little Milton; in his 20s, he got his avant-jazz bona fides in order as well as a member of the Human Arts Ensemble with Charles "Bobo" Shaw, in duos with Oliver Lake, and as a sideman with Frank Lowe. He moved to New York City, joined the horn section of no wave legend James Chance's band The Contortions, and then in 1978 spun off his own group, Defunkt, simultaneously funkier and jazzier. A series of stellar Defunkt albums on the Hannibal label made them stars on NYC's underground scene. After many lineup changes, the classic '80s lineup got back together for a 21st-century comeback and is still going strong. Every member applies jazz chops, rock energy, avant-garde risk-taking, and punk disregard for rules to the task of pushing killer tracks into new territory. The band has had more than a few lineups, but a few years back it coalesced around a reunion of its most classic '80s configuration and hit the road. Live at Channel Zero captures a fierce 2015 club date in Slovenia and throws in a particularly hot passage salvaged from a 2007 German gig as a bonus. If you think this doesn't fit on the ESP-Disk' roster, presumably you've overlooked the funky party music of Don Moore (ESP 2016-2) and Woodstock Workband (ESP 2010-2) and/or you've never seen Defunkt rip it up in concert. FIRE & IGUID FIDD, TEDDY Chastity Revolution and the Submachine Girl LP
"This is Teddy Fire's second long player documenting the early '90s home studio sessions recorded by legendary crate digger Pablo Yglesias (aka Pablo Cuba/DJ Bongohead), with his little brother Teddy (aka Theo Wulff) singing and free-styling like the mutant child of Gary Wilson, Jad Fair, Biz Markie, and Captain Beefheart. The first slab released by Teddy, 1996's Fluxing Headset Man (Sealed Hotel), was a mondo-bizzaro pre-pubescent basement shindig of mammoth proportions. But with interview segments, found sounds and whatnot, it vibed almost like a radio show you'd catch late at night on WFMU -- weird and lo-fi, but maybe a little self-conscious. This new one, recorded when Teddy was in his pimply mid-teens, leaps into a form-vortex far more full-blown as an album-qua-album. On Chastity, young Mr. Fire is backed by Iguid Fidd, a studio band of revolving personalities. With amazing musical work by such surprising names as guitarist Bond Bergland (Factrix, Saqqara Dogs, Workdogs, Cluster), harmonica-player Fritz Fox (Mutants), guitarist Miki Navazio (Lounge Lizards, Fed Ho, Reggie Workman) and Pablo's frequent musical collaborator Phil 'Nordit' Scher (Whimmers), the tunes shift from blazing psychedelic-grunt to wheezing, insane R&B readymade, in the blink of an eye. Chastity has a center that is constantly shifting, with each strange spin bringing another big bubbling gob of something uniquely off-kilter and twistedly splendid. Includes a full-color insert with Teddy's surreal mash-up lyrics and beautifully naïf artwork. If you have any interest in 4-track culture, done at its highest level, you should investigate the 'chimpadelic' universe of Teddy Fire. If you think you don't dig 'real people music' or 'kiddie rock,' you may be tempted to dismiss this record out-of-hand, but that would be a mistake. Teddy Fire will have his say. The Revolution starts here." -- Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 500.

Spanish acid-wizard Regal teams up with Len Faki himself for some tracks that are as lively and versatile as they are effective and cut for the club. A particularly delicious fruit of their teamwork is "The End", a weighty albeit restrained techno- stepper. A masterclass in panning is "VCO", with multiple layers of well-placed frequencies glimmering vigorously and taking listeners for a beat-less ride to outer space. On "Abroad" the team then drops some deeply resonating squelches of acid, unleashing an electric storm onto the final track's haunting chimes.

LOON, MORLEY Northland, My Land CD
"Officially licensed reissue. Includes 'N'Doheeno' as featured on Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966-1985 . Expanded gatefold edition featuring Cree language lyrics and translation and unseen photos. Remastered from the original analogue master tapes Northland, My Land is the full-length vinyl debut from Cree singer-songwriter, actor, and force of nature, Morley Loon (1948?1986). Born in Mistissini, Quebec, Loon became active in music at an early age. Drawing from his Cree culture, language, and environment, Loon developed an organic style that inspired many Indigenous musicians. News of his talent even reached producers at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in the late 1970s. Two 7" EPs of original Cree language compositions were laid down first and later compiled into the Northland, My Land album, which was released to the public in 1981. Accompanied by percussion and flute, Loon taps into a spiritual place with this material, achieving a transcendent quality rarely heard in music. 'N'Doheeno,' which translates to 'The Hunter' reflects the hunting and gathering traditions of Loon's people and region. If you close your eyes and absorb the music's pulse (even without knowledge of Cree), it's easy to visualize the subject of this mesmerizing song. In this quote from the original Northland, My Land liner notes, we learn more: The call of the loon--haunting, evocative, across northern lakes and rivers, has been chosen as a signature effect by Morley Loon in his first recorded appearance. Morley and his people are close to the land and to the wildlife as part of the dominant theme of nature itself. The people have great respect for the wild creatures which they hunt, but on which they also depend. This closeness to the natural world is reflected in sentiments expressed in Cree about the traditional pursuits of the Indian. Though a strict traditionalist who wore his hair and clothes in accordant fashion, Loon was also a seasoned road warrior, performing across Canada, the United States, and Europe. He approached things with a special joy, celebrating and promoting his Cree culture to all. Loon was active as a musician until his untimely cancer-related death in 1986. We are honored to help share Morley's music with the world."

REID, TERRY The Other Side Of The River CD
"Remastered from the original analog tapes. Track notes by Terry Reid. 6 never before heard Reid compositions, plus 5 very different alternate takes -- all previously unreleased British musician Terry Reid is a relatively unsung legend. With his incredible voice (that earned him the nickname 'Superlungs'), spot-on songwriting, and underrated guitar skills, Reid invented new sounds and others followed suit. His 1973 LP, River, is an under-theradar but deeply loved album. Our special new release, The Other Side Of The River, features all previously unreleased material from the River sessions, including six never-before-heard Reid compositions and five very different alternate takes of tracks from River. Over the decades, as River went in and out of print, there were rumors of a mythological double album's worth of unreleased material. The rumors turned out to be true, as the entire album was recorded twice: once with British producer Eddy Offord and again with the legendary Tom Dowd. The sessions captured Reid's free-associative mix of folk, blues, rock, jazz, bossa-nova, soul, and samba, recalling at times Tim Buckley and Van Morrison, while featuring some remarkable guests including Gilberto Gil on percussion, Ike & Tina Turner's Ikettes on vocals, and David Lindley, of psych band Kaleidoscope, on violin. The Other Side Of The River includes songs that even Terry had forgotten -- rockers in the style of the River track 'Dean,' Latin grooves with percussionist Willie Bobo, and beautifully sparse vocal material not unlike David Crosby's If Only I Could Remember My Name and John Martyn's Solid Air. Reid's vocal prowess earned him offers to front both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but he turned down both opportunities to carve out a distinctive solo career. Instead, he rocked on the sidelines, ultimately touring with Cream and Fleetwood Mac, writing songs for CSNY, and opening for The Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour. More recently, Terry's songs have been covered by a number of younger artists including the Raconteurs, and his voice can be heard on DJ Shadow's track 'Listen'. This spring he will be touring the East Coast and U.K. Though his 'superlungs' would have no doubt served Zepp well, perhaps his solo status allowed him to be more experimental and nuanced than he would've been able to be as a mainstream frontman, and for that we are grateful. The Other Side Of The River stands alone as a fresh and utterly groundbreaking Terry Reid gem."

Futureboogie present Pedre Son Enclat from Ron & Neil, AKA Ron Basejam, and Neil Diablo. "Pedre Son Éclat" is a breezy yet sturdy slice of atmospheric synth dance. A remix comes courtesy of Man Power aka Geoff Kirkwood. Man Power crafts a moody and spacious version that respectfully stays close to the original mix. "You Feel It" ramps up the funk; the tribal rhythms, horn blasts and other micro samples keep the arrangement lively. Rounding off the release is "Tears". Tension building strings and beats lay the foundation for some grandiose analog arps, soulful vox and funky guitar licks.

BLACK SHEEP A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing 2LP
2016 repress. "Get on Down is proud to present A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, the debut album by Black Sheep, available for the first time ever as double vinyl release. On the initial release of this classic it was 'The Choice Is Yours' that blew the roof off with even the most of novice rap fans gravitating to the song's energy. The cut has gone on to be featured in a long list of films and commercials (including the KIA campaign with the hip hop hamsters). Singles like 'The Choice Is Yours' and 'Flavor of the Month' made a perfect landing strip for those to delve deeper into the duo's debut. Often humorous ('Strobelite Honey'), often serious ('Black with No N.V (No Vision)', Black Sheep were able to craft an album that displayed their witty sensibilities while also staying conscious in true Native Tongue form. From the moment the album starts with Prince Paul introducing the 'lowlifes of the family tree' you know you are in for something special and different. Mista Lawnge's production is every bit as textured as fellow counter parts Tribe or De La, while standing out as being completely original and fresh. Tracks like 'Butt in the Meantime', 'Try Counting Sheep' and 'La Menage (Featuring Q Tip)' are great examples of the duo's original style - complex layered beats (everything from Jazz, Soul and Rock all meshed together perfectly) to compliment Dres' distinct voice and word play. With other standout album cuts like 'For Those That Slept' and 'To Who It May Concern' it seemed as if they had an endless bag of treats, each offering something different while preserving the groups style."

RASMUSSEN/PAUL FLAHERTY/CHRIS CORSANO, METTE Star-Spangled Voltage LP
"Star-Spangled Voltage captures the first meeting of Mette Rasmussen (alto saxophone) and Paul Flaherty (alto & tenor sax). Providing connective tissue behind the drums is frequent collaborator to both saxophonists, Chris Corsano, who also recorded and mixed the album. Long-time purveyors of the hated music, Flaherty & Corsano began playing together in 1998. A whole slew of records and tours followed, both as a duo and in collaboration with people like Joe McPhee, Thurston Moore, Heather Leigh Murray and Christina Carter, Tony Conrad, and Jim O'Rourke, among others. Rasmussen and Corsano are a newer duo, with their first meeting in 2013 being released on Relative Pitch Records as All the Ghosts at Once. But it wasn't until June 2014 that these three fire musicians found themselves under the same roof, which they would quickly proceed to blow right-the-hell off the joint. The near-telepathic connection between the three isn't something you'd expect from the first meeting of such disparate histories, but why look a gift-horse in the mouth? Flaherty's free-form gale forces and tear-jerking cries have been heard blowing in and out of his native state of Connecticut since the early '70s. In true DIY fashion, he self-released his first record, Orange-In The Midst of Chaos in 1978. Danish-born, Norway-based Rasmussen has fewer records under her belt, but in recent years she has stormed the European scene, whether it be as a soloist, in trio with Alan Silva, or in Mats Gustafsson's Fire Orchestra. Here, Rasmussen plays with pitch-wisdom well beyond her, or most anybody's, years while Flaherty unleashes with all the screaming exuberance of youth; and the two continually snake lines around Corsano's blasts as he moves between time-keeping and time-destruction. There's plenty of all-out, high energy playing on Star-Spangled Voltage, but there's also an underlying sensitivity to musicality and collective sound, so the proceedings never turn into a battle of egos. And the group has freely improvised/spontaneously composed architecture, breaking down at times into solos and duos. 'Salt', a duet between Rasmussen's prepared-sax and Corsano's bowed metal, builds an alien inner-ear landscape of difference tones, unisons and near-unisons to end side A. The album closes with a sax duet, 'In the Light of Things,' with Rasmussen and Flaherty already sounding like old friends."

BERTOIA, HARRY Complete Sonambient Collection 11CD BOX
Repressed!! Harry Bertoia's Complete Sonambient Collection features all 11 of Bertoia's original records newly restored from their master tapes and housed in replica jackets. A heavy duty box, printed with metallic inks, holds the 11 discs as well as a 100-page book containing a lengthy historical essay, an interview with Harry Bertoia from the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, exclusive Sonambient-era material from the Bertoia archive, modern and archival photos of the Bertoia barn, and reflections on Bertoia from David Sefton, Tom Welsh, David Harrington (Kronos Quartet), and all three of Bertoia's children. The Complete Sonambient Collection celebrates 100 years of Harry Bertoia in 2015, the centennial of his birth. In the late 1950s, Harry Bertoia (1915-1978), already a renowned American sculptor, began creating long-form, improvised pieces of music utilizing pure acoustic tones evoked from his sound sculptures. Around this time Bertoia came up with the term "Sonambient" to describe the music and environment created by his tonal sculptures and their lush harmonic overtones. In a renovated barn on his property deep in the Pennsylvania woods, Bertoia curated a harmonious selection of his sculptures and gongs, often recording his frequent, intuitive sound experiments using four overhead microphones and a ¼" tape recorder. Bertoia dedicated the last 20 years of his life to his Sonambient work and in 1970 he released the first Sonambient LP. In 1978, in the final months of his life, he selected recordings from his archive and produced ten more Sonambient records. He would not live long enough to see or hear these records himself. Bertoia died in 1978, at age 63, and was buried beneath a giant gong behind his Sonambient barn. Bertoia's recordings are as much a celebration of sustained tones, slow decay, healing vibrations, and shimmering harmonics as Indian classical music, singing bowls, La Monte Young, or Benjamin Franklin's glass armonica. Through these rich harmonics, pulsing tones, and pure gongs Bertoia was able to more clearly articulate his inner spirit than he could with sculpture alone -- a point he made himself many times in interview. His single greatest piece of art is the totality of his life, which is nearly impossible to measure but easy to feel. Important Records hopes that somehow this box set evokes some of the same sacred, personal feeling that one has in Bertoia's barn. "I don't hold onto terms like music and sculpture anymore. Those old distinctions have lost all their meaning." --Harry Bertoia, 1976

MORGAN, DERRICK This Is Derrick Morgan CD
Derrick Morgan is one of the greats of Jamaican music, and the undisputed king of ska. But his recording career did not stop in 1967 when the sound of ska slowed down into rocksteady. Nor did it stop in 1968 when rocksteady evolved into the early sound of reggae. This set was first released in 1974, when reggae was king, under the name In the Mood, but the working title had been This Is Derrick Morgan. The working title follows the format by which the world of reggae would normally introduce a new singer with a showcase album. In this case, for the first reissue of this album, the working title is restored to reintroduce Derrick Morgan to the new reggae sound -- though an artist of Morgan's caliber really needs no introduction, as his voice works on any rhythm put his way. One of the greats of Jamaican music showing the world -- with the help of producer Bunny Lee -- that he can roll with the reggae sound. CD version includes six bonus tracks with appearances from Hortense Ellis and Paulette Williams.

Remixes 2/8 is the second release in Konsequent's remix series. It starts with the heavily suppressed and hypnotic energy of Efdemin's "Spiegelkerker" remix. The final track, a remastered version of Barbara Morgenstern's "Return Of The Living Deaf" presents its pleasantly over-funked snare programming and build-ups that forge "true techno" eclecticism and dance floor functionality into one mighty laser sword of a track.

MELT YOURSELF DOWN Last Evenings On Earth CD

Last Evenings on Earth is the apocalyptic second album by Melt Yourself Down, evangelical hawkers of DNA-rearranging post-punk exotica. Snatch your passport and let this hydra-headed serpent take you for a dizzying, continent-hopping voyage around a globe spinning ever more rapidly off its axis. If the band's self-titled debut was a series of feverish nocturnal visions beamed from a sub-Saharan desert where voodoo spirits were raised from dusty catacombs, then this is an even headier trip. Here the rhythm has migrated to the city to merge with the pulses and dark currents that run through it."

April 27, 2016, would have been German composer and conductor Friedrich Goldmann's 75th birthday. Macro celebrates the occasion with a luxury CD box set collecting complete trios of 1986-2004 and Goldmann's singular oboe quartet (2000). Two of the recordings were produced by Goldmann himself, and all feature musicians with a long-term working relationship and deep expertise with the composer's oeuvre, including Ingo Goritzki and Björn Lehmann and members of the ensemble mosaik and the Ensemble KNM. The CD is accompanied by a 48-page booklet featuring extensive essays by Björn Gottstein (artistic director of Donaueschingen Music Days) and musicologist Bruno Santos exploring Goldmann's groundbreaking aesthetics. Born in 1941, Friedrich Goldmann studied with Stockhausen in Darmstadt in 1959 and went on to spearhead the young new music avant-garde of East Germany. Achieving widespread recognition in Western Europe with his fiercely modernist, highly integrative, and multilayered aesthetics since the late 1970s, his oeuvre comprises more than 200 works. As a conductor he has premiered major works by Lachenmann, Henze, Rihm, Hosokawa, and others with orchestras and ensembles such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Staatskapelle Berlin, and longtime collaborators Ensemble Modern. He also conducted the French and German premieres of Luigi Nono's seminal Prometeo and recorded Stockhausen's Gruppen for Deutsche Grammophon. As a professor at Berlin's Universität der Künste, he is considered to have been one of the most influential teachers of his generation. Among his students were Helmut Oehring, Enno Poppe, Steffen Schleiermacher, and Jakob Ullmann. After a period in the 1990s in which he withdrew from conducting due to health reasons, Goldmann's music has experienced a renaissance since 2009, with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Heinz Holliger, Ilan Volkov, Peter Rundel, and Matthias Pintscher performing his orchestral works. His opera R. Hot bzw. Die Hitze has seen three restagings since 2010. Since 2014 his entire orchestral and chamber oeuvre has been premiered in concert and is heard in concerts and at competitions in Europe, North and South America, Russia, East and South East Asia, Australia, and South Africa.

RED SQUARE Rare and Lost 70s Recordings CD
Ultra-rare recordings by '70s UK avant-rockers Red Square, the missing link between original free-noise practitioners like AMM, Nihilist Spasm Band, and Peter Brotzmann and post-no wavers à la The Blue Humans, Borbetomagus, Fushitsusha, and The Dead C. Named after the early Soviet Constructivists, Red Square is a pioneering free-improvising, avant-rock band. They bridged the worlds of psychedelic rock, noise, and avant-jazz, and many of the techniques and approaches to music that they helped to pioneer have become common practice today. Predating Sonic Youth by seven years, Last Exit by a decade, and Mats Gustafsson's The Thing by 25, their railing aural assaults were once considered too extreme for commercial release. Formed in Southend-On-Sea in 1974 by guitar player Ian Staples (fresh from gigging at the Middle Earth club with Ginger Johnson's African Drummers and sharing stages with Pink Floyd and Marc Bolan among others), bass clarinet/sax player Jon Seagroatt, and free-jazz drummer Roger Telford, their unusual sound was an amalgam of jazz, improv, and avant-rock, fueled by the loud electric guitar of Ian Staples, whose style has been described as a "revolutionary blend of Hendrix and Beefheart, with the sonic palettes of Derek Bailey and Stockhausen." Staples's atonal guitar riffs referenced metal without ever becoming metal. Red Square shared stages with Henry Cow, Lol Coxhill, David Toop, and National Health, and they were also involved with Music For Socialism. But their extreme sound and attitude were too much for both audience and record companies. The band imploded in 1978 with only two ultra-rare private cassette releases as their only legacy. In 2008, they reformed again and they're still playing and recording as of 2016. Rare and Lost 70s Recordings includes a complete never-before-heard heavy studio session from 1978 plus a thunderous live set opening for fellow "rock in opposition" mavens Henry Cow, recorded in perfect sound quality in 1976. Remastered by original member Jon Seagroatt (who is playing/touring with '70s pagan-folk gods Comus and Current 93 at the time of this release). Includes insert with liner notes and photos. Released in collaboration with Steve Krakow of Chicago's Galactic Zoo magazine and Galactic Archive imprint.

SLOW STEVE Adventures CD
Are you ready for a bewitching pop adventure? Ex-Fenster member Rémi Letournelle aka Slow Steve presents his debut album, Adventures, following a 7" split single on Berlin-based DIY label Späti Palace and Steps, a six-track EP released on Morr Music in 2015 (MORR 134CD/EP). His bubbling vintage synths (together with an impressive variety of instruments) take the listener on a strange trip through imagined galaxies and secret deep-sea worlds. Call it weird, but this is amateur pop in all its glory, and the most natural outlet for Slow Steve. Think of Ariel Pink, John Maus, early Future Islands, old krautrock luminaries, or Arthur Russell -- a whole school of alternative pop music that Letournelle is set to join. He recorded Adventure with producer Tadklimp over five days in WORM Studio in Rotterdam, using their many glorious vintage synthesizers, and in Tadklimp's studio in Berlin. Apart from the work of Charley Vecten, who started Slow Steve with Letournelle as a live duo in 2012, most of the instrument parts on the record were written and performed by Letournelle himself. When Letournelle moved to Berlin, he met psychedelic pop outfit and fellow Morr signees Fenster; he has since become part of their live shows and contributed to their first two albums. There are certain similarities between the washed-out sound of Fenster and Slow Steve, but Adventures sees Letournelle doing his own thing. "I had weird science fiction in mind, visions of Jules Verne drawings from the early 20th century and science fiction/action movies from the end of that same century," recalls Letournelle. "That's why it's called Adventures: I'm picturing a kind of Indiana Jones going down to the bottom of the sea, to Lilliput and other crazy, weird worlds." Song titles like "The Giant Spider Crab From Japan" imply that this is a cosmic synth dive into creepy depths. Elsewhere, one hears the inspiration that French '70s sci-fi movies and their experimental electronic scores had on Letournelle, for instance in the blissful nostalgia reverberating throughout "Oscillation." Even the sunshiny guitar pop and blurred synths of "Sloth" or "Bali" sooner or later end up as humorous excursions. All the song structures seem to follow some secret rules -- challenging but always easygoing. Adventures does what it says on the sleeve: surprise and mesmerize, wild and spaced-out. Welcome to the curious world of Slow Steve.

SAIZ, SUSO Odisea 2LP
Double LP version. Odisea is a retrospective showcase of solo work from Spanish electronic music pioneer Suso Sáiz. Having been at the forefront of Spain's experimental music scene since the late 1970s, multi-instrumentalist Suso Sáiz formed the pivotal group Orquesta de las Nubes and studio project Música Esporádica, releasing a string of albums on Madrid's now cult label Grabaciones Accidentales, which was also home to groups such as Finis Africae, Mecánica Popular, and Ishinohana. A prolific producer, he has recorded with Spain's most singular popular musicians as well as with a number of luminary electronic and world music artists such as Steve Roach, Jorge Reyes, and Salif Keita. Odisea draws material from Suso's early solo works, including music from the rare cassette-only Confidencias as well as pieces from his more recent compositions, soundtrack works and previously unreleased tracks. An artist dedicated to experimentation, Suso's sparse compositions manifest a solitary and stripped back approach to making music. Fascinated by the possibilities of new technology he experimented with guitar loops, synthesizers, and drum computers creating a unique form of musical hypnotism absorbed by avant-garde/minimalist and non-Western musical influences. The most representative figure of Spain's now cult experimental scene, Suso Sáiz remains an exploratory musician in a musical universe that knows no boundaries.

VIRGINIA Fierce For The Night 2x12"
Double LP version. Includes digital download. Virginia steps up with her first full-length on Ostgut Ton, playfully answering all questions and rhetorics about love, lust and life with her singing on eleven new songs. Fierce For The Night is co-produced by renowned artists Dexter, Martyn and Steffi. The album offers a very personal insight to her inner self while drawing from club culture's long and rich history. Virginia says, "My challenge was writing an album that works as well on the floor as it does in a home-listening context, that consists of songs rather than tracks," she continues "Electronic music doesn't necessarily need a political message. On Fierce For The Night I've focused on club culture's basic principles: found and lost love, frenzy and extreme emotions." Having worked on songs for many years before and having collaborated with others was another motivation to elaborate her songwriting and put it into a new context. Virginia uses her voice as another instrument in the writing process. "At times one word I pick is the starting point to develop the rest of the song and to add meaning. That's a different approach to songwriting, but it's a very much flow-driven way of writing." An approach that also refers to and reflects Virginia's craft as a DJ, where records come in one at a time and not only need to connect to the one before and the one after, but also to the floor. Fierce For The Night is, music-wise, an album deeply rooted in club culture while staying approachable for listeners that might not be regulars on the dancefloor. A pop album that playfully defies the schematic formulas of pop music. There is dancing and muscles being flexed in "Bally Linny", "Lies", "Funkert" and "Raverd" (both serving as the album's lead-single on 12" vinyl), "Follow Me" and the eponymous "Fierce For The Night" ? Cheerful and energetic songs that can be played out over the course of a club set, but just as well click with home stereo or radio listeners. And while all songs have personal stories behind Virginia's songwriting, there is also a classic Pop music narrative: making music approachable and offering meaning that people can connect to their own lives. Fierce For The Night is therefore first and foremost an album about relationships: A very personal reflection of Virginia's own experiences so far, but also about the once intimate, now loose connections between everyday people.

MACARTHUR MacArthur CD
U.S. basement psych-prog monster released in 1979 as an ultra-rare private pressing of 200 copies. MacArthur were formed when a young guitar player and songwriter named Ben MacArthur met a 17-year old prodigy musician called Bill Heffelfinger in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1978. Bill was not only a gifted guitar player but also a genius arranger and keyboard wizard. When Ben showed him some of the stuff he had written, Bill took the songs and transformed them into classic pieces of music. They soon recruited Jeff Bauer on bass and Scott Stockford on drums. The chemistry of MacArthur was born. The first MacArthur album, known in collector's circles as The Black Forest due to the vinyl bootleg of the same title released in the '80s, was recorded in 1979 using a four-track machine. SUN RA & HIS ASTRO INFINITY ARKESTRA The Intergalactic Thing 2LP
"One might think, with a discography as extensive as the one Sun Ra boasts, that the scope of his work has been fully apprehended by this point, but The Intergalactic Thing demonstrates its seemingly bottomless depths. This is not a complete surprise: anyone who saw Ra and the Arkestra perform will remember the sight of the band quickly shuffling through an imposingly thick stack of sheet music, when Sunny would call the next tune on the program with an encrypted hint on his keyboard. Band members tell stories of spending long hours practicing a newly-written composition, only to never play it again. Here, we have a taste of that which has been hidden: drawn from rehearsals at the Sun Ra house in Philadelphia from 1969, The Intergalactic Thing introduces a dozen never-before-heard pieces from Ra's songbook -- tunes that may have never even made it to the bandstand, let alone the recording studio -- along with a handful of reworkings of such Ra classics as 'Spontaneous Simplicity' and 'The Exotic Forest.' Without a doubt, this is one of the most important augmentations to the Sun Ra catalog in many a moon. This double LP set comes in a beautiful gatefold jacket, with extensive liner notes by Ra discographer Robert L. Campbell and a download coupon for the full album."

VYNEHALL, LEON Rojus (Designed To Dance) 2x12"
Repressed! Double 12" version. Leon Vynehall has established himself as a genuine artist, creating proper songs that are as layered with musicality and craftsmanship as they are in tune with the dancefloor. Drawing influence from house, techno, disco, funk, hip hop, and soul, Vynehall's music incorporates many elements from his musical past as well; his journey, like most, began with playing drums and piano in bands as a teenager, which manifests itself in the raw, live sound he strives for in his productions. His work has seen him dabble in various tempos, palettes, and styles while always remaining unmistakably his own, reflecting his wide-ranging listening habits, which span everything from classical and orchestral compositions to post-punk. Vynehall describes the inspiration for Rojus (Designed To Dance): "Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named Rojus, that Linus told me translated as 'Paradise'. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on a National Geographic documentary named Designed To Dance, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise." Rojus (Designed To Dance), Vynehall goes on to explain, is a "record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat."

WADA, YOSHI Off The Wall LP
First vinyl reissue of composer and Fluxus artist Yoshi Wada's second album, Off The Wall, originally released in 1985 by famed free jazz label FMP. Recorded in Berlin on May 11 and 12, 1984, by a quartet featuring Yoshi Wada and Wayne Hankin on bagpipes, Marilyn Bogerd on adapted organ (hand-built by Wada), and Andreas Schmidt Neri on percussion. Edition of 750. Mastered by Rashad Becker and housed in old-style gatefold jackets printed by Stoughton. "Off The Wall belongs somewhere between the exuberant harmolodic ritual of Ornette Coleman's Dancing In Your Head, a damp, medieval dirge and the inner ear soundings of composer Maryanne Amacher" --David Keenan, The Wire. "It may be more accurate to think of Wada as a sculptor than as a composer, because his music seems to be a physical reality, like wood or stone, and also because of the way he treats this material. Most composers work with ideas. Their basic interest is in melodies, harmonies, thematic relationships, tone rows, tonal centers, emotional qualities, and other rather abstract things, all of which can then be conveyed in sound, but none of which really are sound. Wada, on the other hand, works directly with the sound itself. His music would sound silly arranged for church organ for example. And if he prefers to preserve some improvisatory freedom rather than to notate specific musical ideas, this is at least partly because he is not so interested in the kinds of musical ideas that can be written down on paper. He wants to maintain direct contact with the physical reality of the sound." --Tom Johnson

LORELLE MEETS THE OBSOLETE Chambers CD
2014 release. Mexican psych duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete's third album. Recorded by Cooper Crain (Cave, Bitchin Bajas) and mastered by Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3). Chambers is a surprisingly direct record that, despite locking into a pulsating krautrock groove on "What's Holding You?" and getting lost in a fog of white noise on "Music For Dozens," always retains a very human heart and soul. There is diversity, too -- from the slide guitar and driving bass on the out-of-control "Sealed Scene" to the narco-blues of "Dead Leaves" and the folky, melancholy "Grieving." The big influences that came into play while making Chambers were Austin psych-rockers Holy Wave's Knife Hits album and the Ty Segall and White Fence collaboration Hair, which more than explains the garage-rock sensibility that pervades here. Also mentioned in their impeccable list of influences are Nico, Syd Barrett, Broadcast's The Noise Made by People, Albert Camus's existentialist tour de force "The Myth of Sisyphus," and Julio Cortázar's short stories.

BLACK HEARTED BROTHER Stars Are Our Home CD
2013 release. The debut album by Black Hearted Brother, the trio of Neil Halstead (Slowdive, Mojave 3), Mark Van Hoen (Seefeel, Locust), and Nick Holton (Coley Park, Holton's Opulent Oog). Stars Are Our Home was recorded, re-recorded, remixed, and generally tinkered with in sheds all the way from Newquay to New York. Like many great albums (All Night Radio's criminally underappreciated Spirit Stereo Frequency springs to mind) it plays a bit like a mixtape, because, stylistically, it reflects all three of its creators. Thus, it ranges from the lengthy space-rock jam of the title-track to the downbeat disco of "My Baby Just Sailed Away," on the way taking in white noise, acoustic folk, and burbling electronics. At times its reminiscent of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, at others Blur's 13, and sometimes even a grown-up MGMT. VA Nouances LP
First reissue of the 1984 Nouances compilation cassette, collecting music by Daniele Ciullini, Rinf, Minox, Twilight Ritual, and The Tempest. 45-RPM LP with postcards and poster. Limited edition of 300. Co-released by Spittle and Dagored. "Nouances was born as a territorial meeting point. A sort of platform whose intent wasn't to show everything but to approach common elements in the contemporary underground culture. A personal route made possible by the usual tools of its heyday: fanzine and music. So, the project was developed as a bilingual booklet with an audiotape attached. Literary contributions came from the editors of the most sought after zine and multimedia teams of the time: Dancing Silhouettes, FREE, Nero, Trax, Tribal Cabaret. The tape was addressing, true to the line, different souls covering a large musical spectrum from romantic new wave funk to minimal synth, even going through post industrial scenarios. All tracks were otherwise unreleased. Tasted today Nouances has a heterogeneous feel, but -- at the end of the day -- that was the goal: approaching the diverse" --Daniele Ciullini, February 2016. Includes texts by Paolo Cesaretti, Paola Triboli, Filippo Rizzi, Vittore Baroni, Marco Formazioni, Daniela Giombini, Romano Pasquini, and Daniele Ciullini and photographs by Daniele Ciullini.

GOLDMAN, VIVIEN Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982) CD
There's a myth about music critics according to which they are frustrated wannabe performers. Evidence to the contrary: Vivien Goldman. The London-born, New York-based Goldman is one of the foremost chroniclers of the perfect storm of reggae, punk, hip hop, and Afrobeat, but between 1979 and 1982, she was also a working musician, creating songs that, years later, would be sampled by The Roots and Madlib. These rare girl grooves are now collected for the first time on Resolutionary, covering Goldman's first three musical formations; first as a member of experimental British new wavers The Flying Lizards, next as a solo artist with her single "Launderette" featuring post-punk luminaries, and then as half of the Parisian duo Chantage with Afro-Parisian chanteuse Eve Blouin. Goldman's eclectic musical crew included PiL's John Lydon, Keith Levene, and Bruce Smith; avant-gardists Steve Beresford and David Toop; The Raincoats' Vicky Aspinall; the mighty Robert Wyatt; Zaire's Jerry Malekani; Manu Dibango's guitarist; Viv Albertine, then of Goldman's good friends The Slits; and dubmaster Adrian Sherwood, who produced the majority of these tracks. Goldman sang in a lilting, clear-toned soprano honed during childhood. She began her singing career in the late '70s, doing backup with Neneh Cherry and Ari Up (The Slits) on Sherwood records by reggae artists including Prince Far I. Goldman was grooving to the innovations of dub. The contrast between Goldman's high, lilting tones and the deep rumble of the bass is a hallmark of all her work, giving a haunting frisson of sex and alienation to songs like The Flying Lizards' "The Window." Reggae had been her London soundtrack, but after moving to Paris in the early '80s, she absorbed music from Africa, an interplay audible in exultant Chantage tracks like "It's Only Money," a mix of steelpan, African soukous guitar, and sobbing Romani violin riding ferocious funk. As the 1990s began, Goldman moved to Manhattan and became New York University's "Punk Professor," teaching original courses on punk, Bob Marley, David Bowie, and Fela Kuti. But she never stopped singing and writing songs. Chicks on Speed released a later cut, "7 Days," on their 2006 Girl Monster compilation (COSR 033CD). Her house 12" records with artists including Berlin's Moritz von Oswald are compiled on LPs. Goldman has also co-written tracks with Massive Attack, Coldcut, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Luscious Jackson. Early in 2016, she performed dub readings onstage with Boston's Berklee Marley Ensemble. Her multimedia beat goes on.

DESAMORY, NICHOLAS You Only Need To Know How It Feels To Believe LP
Telebossa's Nicholas Bussmann is, once again, after 2012's Like You (MINIMAL 013CD/LP), transforming into Nicholas Desamory to release You only need to know how it feels to believe -- a house album of such warmth and rough elegance, it will leave the scene all excited. House has always been an open genre, sampling, adapting, and incorporating other styles. On You only need to know how it feels to believe, it's the reduced string and vocal arrangements that lead to this album's specific sound -- the warmth -- and evoke at the same time the great Norman Whitfield and the legendary Arthur Russell. This is how house music has to be in 2016! Nicholas Bussmann's career has brought manifold works into being, including collaborations with Chico Mello as Telebossa, an acclaimed mélange of Brazilian songwriting, precise electronics, and minimal music, and with Werner Dafeldecker as Rydberg (MONO 092CD, 2015). In addition, together with drummer Martin Brandlmayr (Radian) as Kapital Band 1, Nicholas Bussmann has released two complementary electro-acoustic albums: 2 CD (2003) and Playing by Numbers (2007). In 2010, he staged a concept for a modernized opera with Barnes Dance. Nicholas Bussmann is a conceptual musician and composer. Originally a cellist, he has since expanded his practice to a wide range of musical genres, from electronic to conceptual art. He sometimes works as a composer for film. As curator he has worked at Berlin Documentary Forum, MaerzMusik, the Shanghai Biennale, and the HKW Berlin. He is organizer of the annual Grand Prix d'Amour songwriting contest.

LUCY Self Mythology CD
The third entry in Lucy's trio of adventurous full-lengths is visually introduced by artwork of a pearl-bearing shell, designed by Stroboscopic Artefacts resident visual artist (and Lucy's brother) Ignazio Mortellaro. This drops a subtle hint as to the nature of its contents: just as a pearl slowly forms within its enclosing body in response to organic challenges, Lucy's work is also a kind of crystallization of memory and experience into an artifact of great value. Listeners will be struck immediately by how different Self Mythology sounds from past Lucy productions, while still retaining the feel of relentless questing ("precision and exploration," in Lucy's words) that defined his two previous solo albums, Wordplay for Working Bees (2011) and Churches Schools and Guns (SA 005CD/STROBO 002LP, 2014). The album is enriched by several layers of ambience and by the wordless, improvisational (yet still somehow narrative) vocals and flute of Jon Jacobs. Without a doubt, it's an album with an initiatory atmosphere best heard in one sitting, with as little interruption as possible. However, unlike many initiatory rites, this is no arduous ordeal; great care has gone into connecting each chapter of the album with the same silver thread of entrancing storytelling. On standout pieces like "She-Wolf Night Mourning," electronic arpeggiation and persistent synthetic flutters perfectly merge with the unique tone colors of resonant acoustic percussion and pensive woodwind. Elsewhere, pieces like "A Selfless Act" reconcile technoid pulses with melancholic yet intoxicating echoes of Mediterranean musical traditions. Interestingly, many of the tracks on Self Mythology refer to old legends and well-known fairytales or to more broadly defined states of consciousness ("Samsara," which features an especially strong, sustained choral interplay between glassy synth sequences and earthy flute sonorities). This is where the album is truly unique and relevant in its ambition. The interplay between the graphic design, the vocal and flute performances of Jacobs, and the sound design chosen by Lucy aims to be an intimate audio autobiography of its creators while also referring back to the stories that have shaped human destiny for millennia. This work is a meditation upon the reciprocity between personal hopes and fears and collective dreams and nightmares; an exploration of the endless interplay between the universal and the deeply individual. It is the tale of that uncanny process by which our own conscious experience draws from the pool of archetypal information, while also contributing to it.

VA Saigon Rock & Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968-1974 CD
2016 repress. The long-awaited foray into the Vietnamese rock, pop and soul sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s is finally here. Saigon Rock & Soul delivers the goods international retro collectors have been searching for in vain for many years -- and it delivers beyond belief. Every song is a mini-masterpiece, be it heavy acid-rock psychedelia, horn- and guitar-drenched funk grooves, or gripping soul ballads reflective of life during wartime. The tracks that form this collection cut a window into a rich musical Vietnamese music scene that has long been obscured, and for the most part, forgotten. As the scope of electrified Vietnamese music from the 1960s and 1970s begins to be revealed, it becomes evident that this was among the heaviest and most eclectic musical scenes of Southeast Asia at the time. These songs tell of war, love and what war does to love. All of them were recorded in makeshift studios and even U.S. army facilities while the Vietnam War raged -- and were issued by a handful of Saigon record companies on vinyl 45s and reel or cassette tapes. Westernized forms of music in Vietnam had appeared during the latter 19th century, and especially during the early 20th century, under the influence of the French colonizers. Tan Nhac (trans. "modern music") always incorporated both domestic and international sounds, and continued to develop alongside Western musical trends. During the 1960s and 1970s, pulp ballads were being recorded by leading crooners of the time who alternated between modern and traditional forms of regional music. When the electric guitar hit the streets of Saigon, Vietnamese renditions of contemporary instrumental trends such as surf-rock, beat and twist soon emerged, followed by some pretty deep soul sounds inspired by Motown radio hits as well as funk grooves brought on by James Brown and his contemporaries. By the mid-1960s, Vietnam had been ravaged by war for years. American G.I.s had become a standard fixture in Saigon, as did many of the cultural artifacts they brought with them. This certainly included the music. The sounds of rock and roll dominated the radio waves, and Saigon nightclubs were teeming with new sounds. Musically, The Shadows and The Ventures soon gave way to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as an enthusiastic set of young Vietnamese rockers signed on to the lifestyle, always eager to hear the latest musical trends the G.I.s would bring in on LP or tape. This era saw the birth of a vibrant rock scene, yet rock music and anything that came close was commonly referred to as "soul" in the Vietnamese genre-listings. Like many cultures in Asia, Vietnamese music is recorded, marketed, listened to and disposed of in a relatively quick manner. This level of advanced ephemera ensures a degree of difficulty when trying to unearth and discover cultural histories. Literally, most of the music heard here has been brought back from the dead. Artists featured include some of Vietnam's most popular at the time: Elvis Phuong, Hung Cuong, Mai Lei Huyen, Le Thu, Thai Thanh, Giao Linh, Mai Lei Huyen and the CBC Band. Features 70 minutes of classic original recordings compiled by Mark Gergis with extensive liner notes.

REICH, STEVE Four Organs/Phase Patterns LP
"Steve Reich remains one of the most important figures in 20th century music. Though he studied at the prestigious arts institutions Julliard and Mills College, by the mid- 1960s Reich set about dismantling the very orthodoxy that he had been trained in. Forming a new musical language based on repetitive processes, Reich became established as part of the so-called 'Big Four' of New York minimalists (along with La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Philip Glass). Reich's influence can easily be seen today in both the classical world and contemporary pop music. 'Four Organs' is the ultimate minimalist composition. Performed by Reich, Glass, Art Murphy and Steve Chambers, four identical Farfisa organs strike a single chord and gradually lengthen each note to produce polyrhythms between the players. Anchored by Jon Gibson's stoicallysteady pulse on maracas, the piece deconstructs its opening burst to a sustained mass of sound -- stretching the tones to create (in Reich's words) 'slow-motion music.' Inspired by Reich's early training on drums, 'Phase Patterns' treats the keyboards like tuned percussion instruments: a basic rhythm pattern is played in unison and almost imperceptibly increases tempo to move out-of-sync. Each progressive cycle emphasizes unique figures that are not generated by an individual alone, but rather emerge from the communal expression of the group. Originally released on Shandar in 1971, Four Organs / Phase Patterns is one of most highly regarded avant-garde recordings in the past 45 years. This first-time vinyl reissue features cover photography by artist Michael Snow and is recommended for fans of Neu!, Glenn Branca and Tim Hecker."

BENDER, JOHN I Don't Remember Now/I Don't Want to Talk About It LP
"John Bender recorded voraciously between 1978 and 1980 at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Not even song titles could slow down his creative pace, as he named all the tracks after their position on the original tapes. '36A2,' for example, was cassette #36 side A, piece #2. To close the DIY aesthetic circle, Bender made sleeves by hand with no two covers alike and pressed the LPs in hyper-limited editions on his own Record Sluts imprint. I Don't Remember Now/I Don't Want To Talk About It, Bender's first album from 1980, is the holy grail of minimal lo-fi electronics. Layers of fractured melodies, distorted synthesizers, hollowed-out rhythms and claustrophobic vocals unfold over the 40 minutes of this lost masterpiece. 'It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl,' one of Faust's greatest songs, is perfectly deconstructed by a distinct punk-meets-experimentalist sensibility. While I Don't Remember Now is impossibly rare and the man behind the music remains shrouded in self-imposed mystery, the real surprise is that it has taken 35+ years for listeners to discover Bender's warm, art-damaged immediacy. This first-time standalone reissue is recommended for fans of Pere Ubu, Brian Eno and Robert Ashley. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies. Red vinyl with hand-stamped jackets, each one unique. Liner notes by John Bender."

NENGO AND THE DODO WOMEN'S GROUP, OGOYA On Mande CD
Ever since her childhood, Ogoya Nengo, baptized Anastasia Oluoch in about 1940, would excite listeners around her village with her singing abilities. Very soon she had received her stage name, Ogoya Nengo (which, in the Dholuo language, means "the most precious and expensive singer in the region"). Her 2014 debut album, Rang'ala (Honest Jon's Records), was recorded and produced by Sven Kacirek and Stefan Schneider (Kreidler, to rococo rot, Roedelius Schneider) at various spots around Rang'ala Village, Siaya County, Kenya. Now Ogoya Nengo And The Dodo Women's Group present their second album, On Mande, marking the first release on Schneider and Kacirek's TAL imprint. On Mande presents an even richer instrumentation than its predecessor. We hear nyatiti lute, asili flute, orutu strings, and box guitar, which are swiftly interwoven with fierce rhythms of ohangla drums, various types of shakers, and the scintillating vocal parts of Ogoya and the Dodo Women's Goup. Dodo is a popular traditional female singing style of the Luo communities in the Siaya region of western Kenya. Men are welcome to support the singers on drums, stringed instruments, and flutes. The music on this album may have its origin in the past, but it is truly a contemporary version of a traditional folk music that is unique in that it is a living culture -- a continuously developing art form -- and therefore has an important place in contemporary music. Sven Kacirek and Stefan Schneider were fascinated by this music from their first encounter with Ogoya Nengo in 2013, and decided to record her music without any overdubbing or additional effects. Both musicians, with their individual backgrounds in electronic music and jazz respectively, found access to dodo music through its strong sense of repetition and its complex rhythmic structures, from which they drew parallels to various forms of contemporary electronic music. The recording of On Mande took place in a simple clay building next to Ogoya's house. Most of the songs on the album are songs to honor family members and people of the community -- the best electrician, the most popular wrestler -- while others are played at weddings, funerals, or drinking parties. CD in cardboard sleeve with printed inner sleeve and insert.

WILSON, BENJAMIN DEAN Small Talk CD
Benjamin Dean Wilson's Small Talk is a great album: songs about aging (sung by a young man), songs about illusions and losing them, about young mothers about the teacher Mr. Green, about Rick, Jimmy and Sharon, about Nurse Hirsch a red Corvette, about the suspicious mother-in-law of a local celebrity, a nameless actor and his childhood sweetheart Sadie (she wore a boyish haircut, quite short). It's an album full of twists and surprises, full of humor and truth. Benjamin Dean Wilson has a voice that is reminiscent of Nick Lowe with songs and lyrics that recall The Magnetic Fields. Actually, it's just the other way around -- Where Stephin Merritt (of The Magnetic Fields) cultivates the art of the two-to-three minute song, Wilson's songs are longer. The grand finale "Rick, I Tick Tock ..." lasts for 14 minutes. The first impression: The Gaslight Café in Greenwich Village in 1965, a few über-cool Bohemians under the guidance of Ray Davies and/or Serge Gainsbourg (compare Anna (Bande Originale De La Comédie Musicale) )) anticipate the Abbey Road medley. With a closer listen, Small Talk is a musical drama in three acts, including stage directions sung out loud.

Halfway through "In The Clouds," its drum break gives way to a hazy, murky interlude, before finishing off with machine gun snares for maximum dancefloor intensity. Mastered by Neel at EnissLab. SAKAMOTO + TAYLOR DEUPREE, RYUICHI Live 2LP
Restocked, last copies... Having established a reputation for hosting ambitious and experimental music in the evocative surroundings of London's Church of St John-at-Hackney, St John Sessions now inaugurates its ThirtyThree ThirtyThree label. The imprint, set up in collaboration with The Vinyl Factory, exists to showcase live recordings taken from St John Sessions, both home and abroad, as the series expands. ThirtyThree ThirtyThree kicks off with arguably the most impactful St John performance to date: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Taylor Deupree. The 2014 concert with sound-design-wizard Deupree and multi-disciplinary legend Sakamoto -- whose career has run the gamut from Oscar-winning film scores through daring proto-electronic records -- was notable not only for their kinetic understanding on stage, but also for the unforgettable soundscapes created by the church space. Continuing a creative partnership that has seen them release a string of works together since 2013, Live represents a rare opportunity to own the pair's work on vinyl. In August 2015, Sakamoto announced his return to making music after a hiatus spent recuperating from a 2014 throat cancer diagnosis, marking this release as the first to be fully coordinated and sanctioned following his return to health. Mixed and mastered by Taylor Deupree. Vinyl mastered and cut by Noel Summerville. Design and layout by Gareth Horn.
