FRUSCIANTE, JOHN Foregrow EP CD
John Frusciante's Foregrow EP doesn't sound like any Acid Test record -- or any record at all -- that's come before it. After the unlikely alliance between the Los Angeles label and the iconoclastic Venice, CA, musician on 2015's Trickfinger (AT 005CD/LP), all bets are off. This one's truly a passage through night. Frusciante uses elements of John Carpenter's eternal scores, the drum programming DNA of jungle and footwork, and, yes, a Roland TB-303, all slowed down to a crawl. The Foregrow EP is a lurching, lysergic beauty that offers glimpses of Frusciante's platinum pop instincts, but only behind the veil of true experimentalism.

CROMIE At Interfaces 12"
180-gram vinyl. LA house producer Cromie follows a killer debut for NYC-based label Peach with his Amadeus debut. "At Interfaces" introduces a beautiful saxophone solo and the occasional vocal to complement the massive bassline and percolating pads that form its backbone. The B-side is all fascinating rhythms for the DJs. "Tariff" is pure peak-time business. The B2, or "inside cut," "Clear To Me," features James del Barco, with whom Cromie throws underground raves in LA; the track mixes a hyperactive 2-step kick with a jacking snare and just the right amount of LA G-funk action, with a sampled diva sweetening the mix.

APES GO BANANAS ape001 12"
Steve Bug and Clé inaugurate their Apes Go Bananas duo project with the vinyl-only debut of their imprint of the same name. Dancefloor-rocking house music with a sense of fun and plenty of influence from the art form's golden age, opening with "Kerri On," which pays homage to Mr. Chandler's signature crisp drums and deep, jazzy chords. "Bananas" is more late-night; the driving 909 and dirty descending synth line evoke a sweaty warehouse. "Yeah You Know..." is a tightly programmed rhythm track with a shuffling breakbeat under a simple yet highly effective synth-line and a classic cut-up house vocal.

CHATWIN, BEN Heat & Entropy CD
"Ben Chatwin begins his new album with an instrument you'd least expect - a dulcitone. Created in the late 19th century, the keyboard hits tuning forks with felt hammers, sounding like an ornate music box. It serves as the perfect lead in to Heat & Entropy, whose title refers to how introducing heat (energy) and entropy (chaos) into any given system can create life, exploring the blurring lines between man and machine. The first Chatwin album to be recorded domestically, Heat & Entropy starts a new chapter for the Queensferry, Scotland-based musician. Under the name Talvihorros, Chatwin is known for his innovative combination of electronic experimentation and modern classical composition. However, last year's The Sleeper Awakes took a left turn and exchanged vanguard minimalism for enhanced melodics. Heat & Entropy delves further into this world. The result is an ornate exploration into future possibilities."

"Long needed reissue of producer Donovan Germain's first dub LP from 1979. Rhythms laid at Channel 1 with the Revolutionaries, and mixed at Joe Gibbs' studio by Errol T and Errol Brown. Featuring killer dubs to some of Germain's best productions of the time, including tracks by roots harmony legends Cultural Roots. Ø (MIKA VAINIO) Kantamoinen 2LP
Boomkat Editions present the first vinyl version of Mika Vainio's (Pan Sonic) Kantamoinen. It was originally recorded between 1999 and 2004 and issued on CD only under his revered Ø alias for Finland's Sähkö Recordings in 2005. It is re-sequenced here for the double LP format. Kantamoinen is perhaps the most intimately beautiful yet little known LP in the Ø canon, bridging the gap between his classic '90s minimal techno productions - compiled in the vital Metri (1994) and Olento (1996) collections - and the project's subsequent turn to more ambient, cosmic and dub-wise dimensions in the coolly brilliant Oleva (2008) and Konstellaatio (2013) albums. The album is a go-to disc for hazy daydreaming and post-club head salvage alike, drifting between iced out instrumental rhythms and chasmic spaces interspersed with moments of indelibly heart-rending melody. Taking in 16 tracks in just under 50 minutes, it's notable for including a number of exquisitely succinct - or tantalizingly short - glimpses of Vainio at his sweetest, even most sentimental, especially with the breathtaking "Tuulessa / In Wind" and the frosted harmonies of "Talven Henki / Winter Spirit", as well as the rare appearance of vocals (the voice of Oskar Sala recorded by Hans Ulrich Obrist) in the armchair transportation of "Äänikuva / Sound Picture". Vacillating poignant emotive clarity with forlorn abstraction, this expansion and contraction between deep, wide and relatively longer-form pieces, and a high frequency of shorter, starry-eyed passages, lends the album a more broken, strangely resolved flow than many other Mika Vainio records, and with a twinkling luster that refocuses the ear with an ancient yet timeless sort of depth perception and atemporal appeal. It's an often sublime and necessary addition to any collection of classic ambient electronica and a firm reminder of Mika Vainio's full spectrum electronic dominance and purity. Mastered by Denis Blackham. 45rpm cut by Christoph Grote-Beverborg @ D&M, Berlin.

RIMBAUD'S L'ACADEMIE DES VANITES, PENNY Yes Sir, The Truth Of Revolution CD
Penny Rimbaud presents a reworking of Crass's album, Yes, Sir, I Will (1982), titled Yes Sir, The Truth Of Revolution. Crass' album, Yes, Sir, I Will, was possibly the most angry and hard hitting attack on the political/military/industrial complex ever consigned to vinyl. Written by Penny Rimbaud in 1982 at the height of the Falklands conflict, it seethes with righteous indignation over what he saw as a pointless but vicious exercise in vote catching by a government whose popularity was severely on the wane. So powerful was this critique that it led to threats of prosecution by that very same government, threats which were typically used by Crass to further their attacks on it and its tyrannical leader, Margaret Thatcher. Over thirty years later, in 2014, Rimbaud was asked to participate in the Rebellion Festival, a yearly punk gathering held in Blackpool, UK. Rimbaud and the festival organizers agreed that as an appropriate response they should open the event with a performance of Yes, Sir, I Will. Rimbaud began to question the relevance of some of the content of Yes, Sir. It seemed to him that much of it was pertinent only to the time in which it was written, a time when a genuine social uprising had appeared to be a very real possibility. But times change and there was, he felt, an element of aggression within the work which veiled its essential message of love and peace. With this in mind, and inspired by John Lennon's "All You Need is Love," he set about rewriting Yes, Sir from what he describes as a more Taoist viewpoint. He was largely able to satisfy his wish to change Yes, Sir into an expression of compassion, that being the hugely demanding realm of love in its unconditional form. For the Rebellion performance of the now retitled Yes, Sir, the Truth of Revolution, Rimbaud was joined by Crass' lead vocalist Eve Libertine plus a group of leading musicians from the London jazz scene. Named L'Académie Des Vanités, the band consisted of: Eve Libertine - vocals; Penny Rimbaud - vocals; Louise Elliott - sax; Kate Shortt - cello; Jennifer Maidman - guitar; Phil Robson - guitar; Thad Kelly - bass; Gene Calderazzo - drums. Equally, through its progressive and colorful imagery, the vibrant packaging designed by Gee Vaucher shows a refusal to harp back to the illusory golden past of punk dreams and conceits.

CHRISTIAN S Six Million Bassdrums Later 12"
Christian S is back with Six Million Bassdrums Later. "Give It Up" reflects the essentially needed "saudade" in dance, like a farewell and a new beginning. "Jonnie SDA" is pure dancefloor frenzy, techno not techno with climbing Afro-futuristic arpeggios and soft and precise low ending drums. "Six Million Bassdrums Later" is a psycho-tropical club anthem, a raw groove experience as you will only ever find it in the house of Cómeme. With "Under The River" Christian S applies the psycho-minimal technique of free floating particles to be softly unloaded upon late night crowds.

"Try To Sleep" is an energetic, springy groove that feels like an early summer day with hypnotic, spiral movements in synthesis and female cinematic whispers and shimmering hi-hats and a very 808'esque feel to the groove. The vinyl version of "They Vibed" strips down the original, providing a minimal, drone landscape.

"Summer On Repeat" is a slipping and sliding slice of liquid techno that deftly balance playfulness and pathos, with a real emotional undercurrent belying it's punchy wonkiness. "Sun Sign" combines the wonk and the disco from both of the other tracks, and slows them down to menacing effect, with a chugging discordance that is very Correspondant. "Narcotic Luv" is a free-basing disco-funk jam that sounds like it's been found in a time capsule on the shore of lake Garda, buried deep beneath the ruins of the cosmic club.

"Racer Z" drops metallic and ghetto ambience with a wooden, chunky bass. "Casino" elevates the mood with a graceful, twinkling melody gently melded with grimey beat patterns, snapping claps, and a heavy sub-bass. "Adrenaline" pushes its way across terror and horror soundscapes with a menacing bass prowl, while "White Cobra" injects twisted experimental sounds into incredible beats. ANDERSON/ROOTS RADICS, GLADSTONE Sings Songs For Today & Tomorrow/Radical Dub Session 2CD
"Gladstone 'Gladdy' Anderson is a true legend in Jamaican music, a prominent figure in all three key decades of its history, from the 1960s thru the 1980s. Gladdy was versatile, being a piano/keyboard player, singer and arranger. In the 60s and 70s, he cut classic albums as a solo artist and band leader for Federal (with Lynn Taitt and the Jets) and Harry Mudie, and was a session musician on countless sides for others. For a time, he also comprised half of a vocal duo along with Stranger Cole. This duo have the distinction of being the first artists released on the Channel 1 label, with 'Don't Give Up the Fight' being released in 1973. Moving into the '80s, Gladdy joined the Roots Radics Band as piano player and arranger, and from Channel 1 studios, played on countless tracks with the Radics, the dominant band of the decade. During that time he also self-produced much material. Most of this material has been sorely overlooked, being released across a variety of short-lived labels or thru his long standing partnership with the Overheat label in Japan, who's releases are difficult to get elsewhere. One such set of tunes is being reissued here, the fantastic Sings Songs For Today and Tomorrow LP, along with it's almost-companion dub set Radical Dub Session. Originally released in the early 80s on the Jahmani and Solid Groove labels respectively, these didn't make much of a mark during their time. They are however, some of the toughest Radics material we've ever heard, and the finest of Gladdy's vocal work in the 80s, one of our most favorite of eras. The vocal album stands alongside others like Steve Knight's Orphan Child album as one of the greatest unheralded albums of its decade, originally lost among the flood of 80s album releases. In beginning this project, we learned that our friends at Only Roots in France shared a similar passion for these albums, and we recognized the perfect opportunity for our first collaboration. As two labels with the same goals, cooperation not competition is the way ahead in keeping this music alive, so here it is! We hope you enjoy this fantastic set of albums as much as we do."

Originally released in 2000 on the now-defunct 75ARK record label, this hip hop concept album was released the same year as the Gorillaz' first 12" and is on a similar plane. Following the release of Deltron 3030, all three members participated in the Gorillaz' self-titled debut album. With Del aka Deltron Zero on vocals, Dan the Automator aka The Cantankerous Captain Aptos on production, and Kid Koala aka Skiznoid the Boy Wonder on turntables, this album takes the listener on a paranoid journey set in a dystopian year 3030 dealing with viruses, the apocalypse, an oppressive government, and a war waged against a huge company called the Corporate Bank of Time that rules the universe, all to the well-crafted and consistent musical backing of the Automator. Appearances by Damon Albarn (The Gorillaz, Blur), Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Money Mark, Paul Barman, Mark Bell (Bjork, production), Sean Lennon, and Mr. Lif compliment Del's vocal style and add the right amount of flavor to this classic period piece."

STILL COOL Still Cool LP
"At long last, the legendary unreleased Still Cool album! Producer Carl 'Stereo' Fletcher had been planning this LP on his Uprising label since the late 1970's. In fact, it was nearly released in Nigeria, but due to a faulty tape machine on a trip to Lagos, it never happened. Finally released nearly 40 years later, here it is. Still Cool, like Stereo and his Uprising label, were part of the vibrant musical arm of the 12 Tribes of Israel Rastafarian group in the 1970's. Still Cool regularly performed on 12 Tribes stage shows, just check the photos in our LP & CD jackets. Four of the ten tracks on this album were released as singles back in the day, including one ('Sweeter Music') credited only to Still Cool vocalist Frankie Diamond. The other six tracks have never been released until now. This is a fantastic 1970's roots harmony album that should appeal to fans of classic harmony a la The Abyssinians, Mighty Diamonds, Wailing Souls, Burning Spear, Culture and Bob Marley & The Wailers. The CD version includes six bonus tracks of alternate and extended mixes, culled from rare 45 and 12-inch singles, as well as longer/unedited versions of the 10 album tracks. Both the CD and LP layouts include incredible photos from of the musicians and producer from back in the day. One of our finest releases yet, we hope you enjoy this album as much as we do."

CLARKE, LLOYD Hell And Heaven 7"
"Lloyd 'Parro' Clarke is from the first generation of Jamaican recording artists. Starting his career in the late '50s, Lloyd began recording for many of the major record producers of Jamaica's first wave of records in the early '60s pre-ska era, and continued thru the decade and into the '70s, then recording for producers like Bunny Lee. In 1975 Lloyd recorded and produced for himself this haunting and lyrically striking philosophical roots tune, with Sly & Robbie on the rhythm section. To seal the deal as an all-time classic, Lloyd had a monster dub version mixed at King Tubby's in Waterhouse. Hell And Heaven was released in Jamaica in minute numbers on Lloyd's own Super Star label, but only using recycled labels from his previous single 'Young Love', making it as obscured as it is rare. It was also released in the UK as a 12 inch on the Spectrum label, but without the dub, changed instead to a disco mix where Lloyd's vocal is followed by Trinity's deejay piece on the rhythm. Here we give you the original JA 45, vocal and dub."

TRINITY Three Hundred Jamaican People (A Nice Nice People) 7"
"Trinity's deejay piece to Lloyd Clarke's 'Hell and Heaven', cut when Trinity was at the height of his powers in 1975. Trinity does a little ode to his countrymen over this heavy Sly & Robbie rhythm. Trinity's cut is best known following LLoyd's vocal on the UK 12 inch release on the Spectrum label, but it was also released in apparently minute numbers in Jamaica on a 45 on the Volume One label, very seldom seen or known to exist! Even better, that release features a unique dub on the flip, different than the dub on Lloyd Clarke's vocal 45. The Trinity 45 is now re-released on Lloyd's Super Star label."

HURLOCK, LIVINGSTON "LIVY" Natty Become An Hurricane 7"
"A true classic of independent '70s roots. Livingston 'Livy' Hurlock wrote, sang and produced this classic rough & ready rasta anthem roots 45 in the mid '70s, his first recording. As a fledgling artist, Livingston did what so many did in the '70s and '80s, trod on down to a Kingston studio and cut a record. This one was made at Dynamic Sounds, with the mysterious 'Decimal Inc.' band who Livy recalls as a house band at the studio. Pressed in a quantity of 200 and self-distributed, the 45 made little mark at the time, despite the fantastically illustrated label art, and a terrific dub side. When we first heard of (but had never seen) this record, it sounded too good to be true, but it is, and after hearing it we were able to track down Livingston and give it an official reissue. Livingston emigrated to the US in the early '80s, where he has continued to record and perform roots reggae for over 30 years, both as a solo artist and as the front man for bands, under his stage name Levi Matamugu."

Anglo-French artist Flox has been sowing his "Nu Reggae" seeds for years now in venues all around France, and a new genre has sprouted, somewhere between roots reggae and electro. Deeply influenced by the Jamaican culture, from Linton Kwesi Johnson to The Police, to the more modern Fat Freddy's Dop, Flox released his fifth album, Homegrown, in his home country France in late 2015. The German Echo Beach label is now proud to present Homegrown's international release, combining the original album with a second exclusive CD with bonus tracks. Even though the four previous albums already perfectly encompassed the richness and diversity of Flox's universe and personality, Homegrown creates a more intimate place, closer to his state of mind, revealing his endeavor to remain genuine regardless of the cost, to follow his gut without compromise. Homegrown conveys a "do-it-for-yourself" message, in which the final more genuine fruit is to be shared all around. Always keep your promise Flox, fans had been warned: "Next one will be 100% 'Nu Reggae'." On Homegrown, his voice and the depth of lyrics never betray an unswerving reggae atmosphere, thereby fulfilling his promise.

HEAD TECHNICIAN Zones LP
Not Waving's Ecstatic label catch Martin Jenkins (Pye Corner Audio) in Head Technician garb for a slippery set of slow, plasmid acid workouts titled Zones. Originally issued on a super-limited tape (2015), presented here on vinyl. Over the years since he first mooted the Pye Corner Audio sound in 2010, Jenkins has used the Head Technician alter ego as a sort of evil engineer Hyde analogous to his day-to-day Jekyll, a sort of "hyperstitious" studio partner in a time-honored tradition of sleeve credits ghost chasing. Where Pye Corner Audio's pieces may tend to be lustrous and optimistic, the Head Technician's Zones LP hems to the shadows of the 'floor with a furtive, noirish quality that works a treat in the right situations, whether sound-tracking gas lamp-lit raves or midnight street patrols seeking out ne'er-do-wells and laudanum dealers. Fired on a classic trinity of Roland TR-606 drum machine with an MC-202 (a beast to program, he admits) and TB-303 to sequence his baselines, it clearly makes explicit reference to the early days of Detroit techno and UK bleep 'n bass, but the vibe is more anachronistic, out-of-time, possibly thanks to his patented, lagging basslines and slowly unfolding arrangements, bridging that imaginary, dilated gap between fuzzy dancefloor head melt and curtains-drawn next day gouch out. As Martin Jenkins explains : "It's really satisfying to set up patterns on each machine, let them run and tweak and adjust as the track unfolds. All of these pieces were initially live takes, with just a couple of overdubs and some edits to tighten up the arrangements. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the 202, I can't get enough of that square wave bass that it does, but it's such a beast to program." Includes two previously unreleased tracks that were not included on the tape edition. Vinyl remastered and cut by Matt Colton.

L.U.C.A. I Semi Del Futuro 2x12"
2x12" version. L.U.C.A. is Francesco De Bellis aka Francisco. Years ago he started putting together some selections for a friend of his: Luca. The intention was to pick songs to be played during car rides, and like any other kind of ritual, this too would come with strict rules. You'd have to go through the whole selection of 100 tracks without skipping, because every single one was important: Be it the sounds, the arrangement or its creativity, each track was there for a very specific reason. It quickly became a monthly event which for several years evolved in a deep musical research without genre boundaries: disco and psychedelic, soundtracks, library music, exotica, electronic and dance music, Italo, new-wave, pop or prog. Tracks of each and any historical period and provenance had been featured in these special compilations. But it wasn't always that easy to come up with the right piece and eventually Francesco started producing a few on his own to fill in the gaps. After six tracks, it was quite clear that there was a project developing, one in which he could finally experiment freely, leaving behind the rules that often come with dance tracks. And so L.U.C.A. was born. I Semi Del Futuro is an album that embraces a new-hippie vibe, strongly pervaded by a mystical naturalism. This is a whole new universe in the making, where rumbling magmatic atmospheres evolve gradually in a journey through an idealist new world, celestial interludes revealing a full takeover of nature, with a pervasive library feel that dates back to the great Italian masters, carrying on Edizioni Mondo's legacy. The label name Mondo has its roots in "Mondo Movies", an Italian movie genre born in the '60s. Mondo movies are characterized by documentary-like content that addresses several topics from around the world. The Mondo label has the goal to produce music that is descriptive of concepts, images and environments. Mondo is inspired by library music, a genre frequently used as theme or background music in radio, film and television in that very same period.

L.U.C.A./ROTLA/POLYSICK Niagara 12"
180-gram vinyl. Limited edition of 500. Edizioni Mondo returns with its second 12" series, following its acclaimed four-part debut in 2015. While the first series focused on seascapes, this second chapter delves deeper into Edizioni Mondo's world, presenting new views and artists. Niagara, released in advance of the L.U.C.A. album, contains three different versions of the same track; one from Rotla, one from Polysick, and L.U.C.A.'s own quirky version, which is surprisingly dancefloor-friendly. Mondo takes its name from the Italian mondo film genre, and is inspired by library music, with the goal of producing music that is descriptive of concepts, images, and environments.

MONARCH Two Isles LP
LP version. Transparent splatter vinyl. No other band channels the color, warmth and energy of the coastal SoCal scenery as well as San Diego's Monarch. Their debut album Two Isles was recorded and produced by local glitterati Brian Ellis. It's full of breezy Allman Brothers guitar leads gliding effortlessly on top of gentle, and sometimes not so gentle, prog-rock structures. With supreme musicianship, they somehow connect the dots between classic California rock, prog, pastoral pop and the vivid, expansiveness of early 1990s British shoegaze. Indeed these guys have created something that transcends sounding like a time capsule. While psychedelia might be the prism that everything is projected through, Two Isles reveals the fact that this is a group of people who grew up on a wide range of sounds available in the diverse San Diego scene: ambient, indie, math, jazz and whatever else was available to experience.

Typifying the consummate craftsmanship of the three members' performances - each with such distinct personality and together so perfectly balanced - their perfectionist attitude to sound is maintained across the production on the album, beautifully colouring the expressionist fusion of samba rhythm, jazz progression, funk attitude and psychedelic electronics. This Far Out Recordings release is mixed and mastered from the original tapes and will be released on 180g vinyl and CD."

MAGIC SOURCE Earthrising LP
LP version. Magic Source, a project led by producer Björn Wagner, presents Earthrising. Björn Wagner of The Mighty Mocambos, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and Mocambo Records, is renowned for creating an authentic and hard-hitting raw funk sound. This new project is a step towards a new style: analog-electronica, or so called cosmic-disco sound. Recorded on a 16-track reel-to-reel tape, Earthrising combines raw unedited live band recording, with the refined production aesthetics of the disco era, including the use of vintage synthesizers, group chants and processed acoustic percussion, for an organic club feeling. While maintaining an un-edited, but highly hypnotic four-on-the-floor groove, Magic Source leaves the old beaten track of cheesy disco-pop and overheard dance classics. The music is an unusual and surprisingly coherent mixture: Earthrising unites rootsy Afro elements (such as almost tribal chants, percussions and a funky rhythm section), with sci-fi score soundscapes (such as ethereal synthesizers, theremin, space-echo and miniature instruments) to an irresistibly grooving beat extravaganza. Cosmic music was known exclusively in the region of north Italy, Austria, and southern Bavaria until recent. Originally an eclectic DJ mixing style that evolved in the late '70s, it combined disco, ethno-groove fragments, electro, Afro-beat, dub, Italo, funk and exotica weirdness to a trancy and danceable turntable symphony. Magic Source creates its very own all-live version of cosmic. Though you will rarely hear anything similar from any other band, there's hardly an eclectic style that sounds more natural than the wonderful album that is Earthrising.

GOOGIE & TOM COPPOLA Shine The Light Of Love LP
Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official album reissue of Shine the Light of Love by Googie & Tom Coppola: A beautiful soaring soul album sublimely produced with a sweet LA groove. Thomas Wilkinson Coppola (aka Tom Coppola) is a pianist and arranger, known for being a principal member of the funky prog-jazz group Air (not to be confused with the French duo). He began working as a musician in Manhattan in the 1960s, where he met Carolyn Brooks (aka Googie Coppola). If they only released one self-titled album with Air in 1970, and Shine the Light of Love as a duo in 1980, these two amazing talents have collaborated with artists such as Herbie Mann, Lenny White, Flora Purim, Ray Barreto or Jeremy Steig to name just a few. Shine the Light of Love was also released in 1980 on Columbia, after the couple left Air to become born-again Christian. A real lack of promotion from the label caused the record to disappear, however it was, in many ways, years ahead of their contemporaries. Googie's vocals are an absolute delight - with a Minnie Riperton-esque sort of feeling - and the overall album's got some nice jazzy touches and a sublime, sophisticated approach to the overall sound, while never falling into commercial. An underrated masterpiece that definitely deserved more attention, which is why Favorite Recordings is deeply honored today to present it in a fully remastered version, housed in a fine gatefold sleeve including original notes.

BYRNE AND BARNES An Eye For An Eye CD
Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official album reissue of An Eye For An Eye by Byrne & Barnes: A true West Coast/AOR masterpiece, produced in legendary music city Muscle Shoals (Alabama) and originally only released on Japanese label Climax. In 1981, Robert Byrne followed up to his 1979 album, Blame It On The Night, by teaming-up with multi-instrumentalist Brendan Barnes to record this rare West Coast classic. If they never recorded any other music together, both display incredible music career and went on to produce for many famous artists such as Pointer Sisters, Patti Austin, Earth Wind & Fire, Phil Collins, Brian McKnight, or Boyz II Men to name just a few. An Eye For An Eye features amazing and sophisticated songs, and parades all the elements of the AOR style: a jazzy sometimes fusion approach, with modern soul and groove flavors. If it's almost unknown in Byrne & Barnes' country of origins and in most part of the world, it's become hugely popular and sought-after in Japan and for all West Coast music lovers. After Charles Maurice recently selected the song "Love You Out Of Your Mind" in the AOR Global Sounds 1975-1983 Vol.2 compilation, it quickly felt obvious for Favorite Recordings to arrange a proper reissue of the full album. Fully restored and remastered with great attention to sound quality.

CRYSTAL Music Life LP
Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official album reissue of Music Life by Crystal. A killer LP produced in 1983 by Georges Debs (GD Productions), and mixing elements of zouk and tropical influences from the French West-Indies, with heavy disco and funk flavors. Crystal was an eight-piece combo from the French West-Indies islands led by Franck Donatien. Gifted guitarist and composer, Franck Donatien had a few experience leading band projects such as Crystal, Lazer, and Taxi Kreol. He is mostly known and respected for his long and prolific career as a musicians for many artists from the local zouk music scene. With Crystal, he released two albums between 1984 and 1985, both today very hard to find and famous for including some amazing tracks. GUERILLA TOSS Jeffrey Johnson (Color Vinyl) LP
2016 repress. Originally released in 2012. Available in two different colors: clear beer, transparent blue. "Debut LP session by a young Boston-based quintet who hit with all the Dionysian power of a young Harry Pussy, squared and electronified. Kassie Carlson's vocals have all the upper register urgency once manifested by the great Adris Hoyos, and her bandmates manage to create large stugs of post-punk-angularity, overlaid with truly dithersome electronics. The result is one of the first transcendent post-no-wave records of our era. Live, Guerilla Toss create an amazing and beautiful disruption of all known truth-fields. They function at a level of pure discordian creation so pure it is guaranteed to melt all but the stoniest witnesses to its blazing infirmity. But the album, Jeffrey Johnson (named after the most elusive member of Jack Black's legendary Johnson Family, as well as the author of the record's cover art), manages to work beautifully as a collection of songs, rusty and scrappy, but songs nonetheless. Guitars weevle off into the atmosphere, key chords emerge like one of Adele Bertei's lost tampons, drums cuss sullenly - it's an amazing mess of sound-bed for our heroine to caper upon. Get yours now or pine for it later. Your choice." -- Byron Coley, 2012.

HEMMANN, MAREK Moments CD
The third time is the charm...that's right. Thus, the joy about the third album by Marek Hemmann, Moments, is huge. Likewise, the third album is perceived as an important brand which ought to show the actual extent of a musician's potential. Either hold one's ground or dare something new? Marek Hemmann is not deterred by such expectations. He was merely in the mood for new tracks. The eight newcomers on Moments sound accordingly - easygoing, detached and characterized by the same profoundly and harmonically balanced musicality for which Marek Hemmann is world-renowned. However, a "just continue as before" mentality is not an option for the Berliner by choice. From the beginning, his music effortlessly blurred the established genre lines. In this vein, his new work is influenced by a great candor. As already accomplished with his highly esteemed albums In Between (FREUDE 004CD/LP) and Bittersweet (FREUDE 009CD/LP), in Moments Hemmann takes the listeners - and certainly the dancers - on a journey through different spheres of contemporary electronic music. The album, nestled between "Helio" and "Bob", branches to significantly different moods, from silent pauses to weightlessly lifting off to dancing around dreamily. Yet, within the many interwoven details, a noticeable sophistication can be picked out. Even more seamless and subtle, Marek Hemmann manages to unite euphoria and sweet melancholy, playful and sublime sounds, warmly shifting basses and sweeping synth-melodies. Moments provides moments of life and moments on the dancefloor with this fitting soundtrack.

MOGADOR Overflow Pool LP
Some records just barely nudge your consciousness, but they do so in such an intriguing manner that their tentativeness and ephemerality lure you in deeper than you expect. Such is the case with Overflow Pool by Will Long's project Mogador. This prolific producer -- who is best known for his profoundly meditative ambient music under the name Celer -- favors the long-form, beatless approach to composition, as he lets his rigorously honed tones unspool with a gentle insistence. Overflow Pool consists of two lengthy pieces full of lingering, aqueous chords spaced out by suspenseful lacunae. Each piece revolves around episodes of briskly struck piano chord-clusters that are left to decay to near-silence for maximal contemplation. These are followed by a lower-keyed retort, as if to keep the listener from becoming overly optimistic after the preceding burst of Harold Budd-on-uppers tones. Similarities to Brian Eno's Thursday Afternoon (1985) are also evident, as Mogador methodically doles out morsels of oceanic calm geared to align your chakras like some 21st-century Steven Halpern LP. It sounds ideal for flotation tanks, deep-tissue massages, and general relaxation. Long observes that Mogador differs from his Celer output "because it's completely unprocessed. This is a pure room recording with no extra effects? only piano and reeltoreel delay." The Yokohama, Japan-based musician says that his primary aim with Overflow Pool "was to make something that doesn't happen all the time -- it's so sparse, that it blends into the room. It happens so seldom that it's easy to forget about. You just catch it here and there. That's the feeling I wanted." It's a feeling that's all too rare in modern music -- peacefulness without sentimentality. 180-gram LP in reverse-board sleeve. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. CROTAPHYTUS Acanthosaura LP
Robert Witschakowski takes a break from rewiring the rules of electro with his prolific The Exaltics project to deliver the eerie soundtrack album, Acanthosaura. Working with Nico Jagiella - with whom he co-runs the Solar One label - the pair have created the soundtrack for a world of flickering shadows, dark ambient textures and ominous bass tones. It's the first Crotaphytus release in six years and according to Witschakowski, a project stemming from his love of reptiles and movie soundtracks. Like previous Crotaphytus releases on Solar One, Acanthosaura is a deeply atmospheric affair. With each track title a reference to different types of lizards, from the death-paced drums of "Cyclura Cornuta" to the slow-motion ebm-disco groove of "Xenosaurus Platyceps" and the murderous subs of "Caiman Latirostris". In between, the dark ambient passages of "Conolophus Subcristatus" and "Amblyrhynchus Cristatus" as well as nods to The Exaltics's spaced-out electro in "Iguana Delicatissima". However, Robert insists that the album remains true to the project's ethos: "Crotaphytus is always dark and haunting. The project has no rules and that gives us the total freedom to make everything with it. I make also different styles with The Exaltics, but I have a concrete vision every time. With Crotaphytus, we let it flow and see where we land at the end. For this album, we tried to create an atmosphere like you are in a deep jungle, chased by giant lizards. Ambient has really the power to transport feelings. I guess this is subliminal in us from watching films. Most soundtracks have a lot of music without beats, so we collected tracks with beats and also ambient ones." You can hear the sound of the jungle at night as "Xenosaurus Platyceps" draws to an end or on the dusky dread that sets in on album closer "Amblyrhynchus Cristatus". "I'm a sucker for atmospheric music. I need to imagine things by hearing music. Other worlds, fantasy, come down from a daily struggle. I could say half of Crotaphytus, the atmosphere, that is me, and the other half, is the power Nico gives to the project," he points out. Mastered by Alden Tyrell & cut by Christoph Grote-Beverborg at Dubplates & Mastering. Artwork by Chloe Harris. 180 gram vinyl & reverse board jacket.

HUMAN RAYS A Tension LP
Human Rays - Stockholm, Sweden producer Robin Smeds Mattila - says that the music on A Tension was made during nocturnal sessions in a studio full of mostly cheap analog and digital gear, all in one take. "I kind of let the mood guide me and just go with it," he says. The result is a gripping four track suite of emotionally charged minimal ambient that was created quickly but sounds like it was rigorously sweated over for many weeks. After a handful of releases that explored noisy, quasi-industrial techno, Mattila deviates into a more abstract, melancholy mode with A Tension. His creative process involves experimenting "to see how far I can push a sound with a pretty lo-fi setup. Improvisation and limitations are part of the thing that makes it interesting." This approach yields riveting dividends right from the start on A Tension. On "Condensity", the sparse pinging and distant, muted beats commingle with what sounds like rough wind or waves, hinting at the Arctic vibes that Biosphere conjured on Substrata (BIO 005LP, 1997). It's at once chill and chilling, tranquil and unsettling. "Between The Hours" places spindly, woody beats beneath a dramatic sweep of synthetic strings, ebbing and flowing like Fripp & Eno's monumental "An Index Of Metals" on Evening Star (1975). "Neverendless" might be even more redolent of the North Pole than "Condensity", its severely minimal isolationist ambience suggesting Mick Harris' none-more-cold Lull or Thomas Köner's Permafrost (1993). On "Manual Litany I", Mattila takes what sounds like a sentimental synth melody and smears it into a mantra of compelling drudgery. He notes that the track draws inspiration from William Basinski, who's famous for his series of profoundly poignant Disintegration Loops albums (2002-2003). "It's an attempt at making an organic loop, so it's just me playing the same thing over and over on a synthesizer and letting the mistakes become part of the composition together with just playing around with an effects processor." From these simple, humble means, Mattila forges a record that triggers subtle, intricate feelings. A Tension is that rare kind of music that freezes out all extraneous stimuli and submerges you in a frigid netherworld in which calm and disquiet exist in iced-out harmony. Mastered by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering. Artwork by Chloe Harris. 180 gram vinyl & reverse board jacket.

MOKADELIC Gomorrah (Original Soundtrack) CD
The original soundtrack of Gomorrah, the acclaimed Italian television crime drama inspired by Roberto Saviano's 2008 best-selling book Gomorrah. Gomorrah received unprecedented critical acclaim all over the world. The Guardian (UK) called it "The unmissable, ultimate mafia show" and German magazine Spiegel-Online says, "Forget the Sopranos, here they are the Savastanos!" The music from both seasons of Gomorrah is composed and performed by Mokadelic, a Rome based psychedelic-post-rock collective, specializing in music for film. The music of Mokadelic is influenced by the contemporary sounds of such names as Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You Black Emperor, without forgetting the lessons from the great Italian soundtrack composers of the sixties and seventies. The soundtrack has an eclectic sound palette that alternates from spacious, melancholic atmospheres to extremely dense climaxes. It's an emotionally intense musical narrative, deeply inspired by Gomorrah's haunting realism.

OL' DIRTY BASTARD Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version 2LP
2016 repress. "It's safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1995 solo debut Return to the 36 Chambers. The brief glimpses of ODB's unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan's landmark Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and, with RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the most bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark sense of humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme attacks ('Damage,' with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles 'Brooklyn Zoo' and 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya') and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence ('Don't U Know' and the R&B-tinged 'Sweet Sugar Pie'). Backed by RZA's appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from the Clan, Return became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album in 1996. The album stands as a high water mark in the Wu Tang Clan's collective creative output and was selected as one of the Best 100 Rap Albums by The Source magazine in 1998. JURASSIC 5 Quality Control 2LP
2016 repress. "Jurassic 5 flexed serious old-to-the-new muscles in the '90s, beginning with their independently released single 'Unified Rebelution' in 1994, and book-ending with their stellar debut full-length: 2000's Quality Control. They walked a tightrope between underground and mainstream hip-hop, and toured alongside rap peers as well as punk rockers on the Vans Warped Tour. With double the pleasure of your average hip-hop group -- two DJs and producers (Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark); and four MCs (Chali 2na, Akil, Marc 7 and Zaakir aka Soup) -- they brought the late 1970s 'unison MC' style of pioneering groups like the Fantastic 5 and the Force MCs to a new generation. Even more surprisingly, they did so out of Los Angeles, whose hip-hop flavors generally leaned towards Gangsta, G-Funk or Electro lines. Musically inventive and lyrically forward-thinking, each song on Quality Control is a new adventure, exploring engaging territory, delivered via one of the best live hip-hop shows fans had seen in years. From singles like the strutting groove of the title track to the throwback doo-wop samples on 'The Influence' and the catchy, keyboard groove-driven 'World of Entertainment (WOE Is Me),' to deeper album tracks like the lyrical gymnastics of 'Jurass Finish First' and the thought-provoking 'Lausd,' Jurassic 5 consistently stepped to the plate and their fans responded in kind, nearly pushing the album to Gold status. Add the innovative DJ-and-sample workout which closes out the album, 'Swing Set,' and you have one of the 2000s' most unique and solid full-length platters."

BRON AREA The Trees and the Villages CD
Bron Area started life as a duo in March 1979, emerging from a community of musicians in Nuneaton, England. Martin Packwood and Steven Parker had been involved in a number of projects before meeting Peter Becker, who supported and encouraged them in the early stages of Bron Area. With the reorganization of Reluctant Stereotypes, which resulted in the departure of Martyn Bates and Chris Dunne (who would drum on all later Bron Area records), Bates arrived at a Bron Area gig to be introduced to Becker, and thus Eyeless in Gaza came into being. Ambivalent Scale Recordings was later established and saw the release of Bron Area's One Year cassette album (1980) and Fragile Sentences 7" EP (1981) as well as Eyeless in Gaza's Kodak Ghosts Run Amok 7" EP (1980) and Kevin Harrison's On Earth 2 cassette (later released in remixed form as a Cherry Red album). As Eyeless in Gaza moved on to greater glory via their deal with Cherry Red, the momentum of Nuneaton's music scene diminished, Bron Area subdued their efforts somewhat until David Barker of Glass Records, having heard two songs from the Alternative Sounds zine's Facet I compilation tape (1981), asked them to appear on his compilation LP The Wonderful World Of Glass Volume One at the end of 1981. So impressed was Barker that he signed Bron Area to Glass at the beginning of 1982. The band's first vinyl release on the label was a 12" EP titled Different Phrases, which was released in March 1982 (and later released as a 7" on the Posh Boy label in the USA). Bron Area spent the best part of 1982 in the recording studio, and released their debut LP, The Trees and the Villages, in 1983. For this first-ever reissue, The Trees and the Villages has been remastered here by original producer John A. Rivers.

MISTRESS Hollygrove 12"
Debut of zinging, weightless productions by New Orleans-based Mistress. Hollygroove is articulated with an American diction, yet draws heavily on UK grime. First is the shuddering echo chamber drill menace of "Lie Dormant", an aching balance between stasis and cocked tension, whilst the dank-but-dainty southern bounce of "Hollygrove" nails a sort of gaunt 3-step swagger aching for an acapella, and "Mjolnir" sounds like a Scratchy '05 riddim sent into orbit. Classic grime sound is twisted back into the twinkling 8-bar dancer, "Kanagawa Homicide" and "Behemoth" veers back to U.S./Latino club sounds. "Gatekeeper" ascends/descends into heavenly hellish, weightless baroque synth structure.

SHACKLETON WITH ERNESTO TOMASINI Devotional Songs 2x12"
2x12" version. Shackleton and Ernersto Tomasini present Devotional Songs. Devotional Songs is Shackleton's most expansive, ecstatic and hallucinatory music to date. Four long-form pieces developing the free-flowing compositional aesthetic of his recent Deliverance series (2014-2015) and Powerplant performances: fiery rhythmic-melodic turbulence channeling Congotronics way to the east - with an aura of restrained mania reminiscent of the feral pomp and gallows humor of Coil's "moon-musick" phase - all earthed by dub-wise bass. The pairing with Ernesto Tomasini - the cult singer, performer and artist whose history spans experimental theatre, cabaret and collaborations with Othon, Marc Almond, Sleazy, Julia Kent and David Tibet among many others - is a match made in heaven. With his four-octave voice swooping from deep growl to piercing falsetto, Tomasini's presence both heightens the taste for the theatrical that's always been integral to Shackleton's music, and makes explicit the latter's kinship to the occult energies of the UK's post-industrial underground. As the record's title suggests, these are shadowy songs rich with allusions to bodily ritual and psychic exploration, with Tomasini's lyrics framed by luminous whirls of hand-struck drums and synthetic gamelan, bells and tumbling organ melodies. "You Are The One" escalates from delicate choral chant to full-bore psychedelic organ freak-out. "Rinse Out All Contaminants" is a slow incantation, to purge all negative thoughts. The melodies of "Father You Have Left Me" are smudged like early Steve Reich, then burned out by snarling subs; and the magnificent "Twelve Shared Addictions" balances elliptical melodies like spinning plates, gradually unfurling into a break-neck storm of voice and hammered keys. A remarkable collaboration that hints towards new emerging futures for Shackleton, a pioneer in electronic sound and rhythm.

Three club burners steeped in Detroit traditions, distilling the explorations in the collective, nervy hypnosis of Kassem Mosse live sets. As the music slowly unfurls, KM subtly tweaks its parameters, redistributes its weight, pricking its grooves into a state of utterly infectious perpetual movement. The two visions of "Chilazon" track opposite pathways: the first is twelve minutes of gorgeous, dub-wise, aquatic techno, spattered with kicks and razor-sharp hi-hats; then a terse mesh of broken drums, escalating to a feverishly intense peak. "Lanthamum" is calligraphic swordplay, its toms and bass stabs warily circling one another in a graceful steppers' dance.

By the time they struck out on their own, keyboardist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Zigaboo Modeliste were a well-oiled machine whose earthy grooves and intricate rhythms set a standard for Crescent City funk that's never been matched. MADLIB & FREDDIE GIBBS Pinata 2LP
2016 repress; double LP version. "Freddie Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets. But unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth without inhibition or an exaggerated rap persona. Piñata, a 17 track collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his transparent approach to making music, combining an at times stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer. Piñata is 'a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax,' says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, the disregarded city known for producing Michael Jackson. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries. While this is the latest in a series of single-artist collaborations for Madlib, after Jaylib (J Dilla), Madvillainy (MF Doom) and the street-centric O.J. Simpson with Detroit's Guilty Simpson, the pairing is unique as it is the first time for Gibbs working with just one producer."

MARSH, MILTON Monism CD
"In 1975, Milton Marsh released his first album Monism for the Strata-East label. Marsh, a composer, arranger, saxophonist and flautist, recorded the album in New York City from 1973-1974. The musicians on Monism represent some of the finest living in NYC at the time: pianist Cedric Lawson, bassist Don Pate along with two rising stars at the time, David Ware on saxophone and Greg Bandy on percussion. Ironically, all of these artists would go on to record several volumes of music in their careers except for Marsh, who recorded only one additional album, 1985's Continuum, after a decade long absence. Marsh composed and arranged all of the album's six compositions, each of which featured between nine and 17 players. This sizable headcount explains the album's ability to soar from quiet, minimal moments to robust, dissonant explosions, depending upon the track. 'Vonda's Tune', the album's opener, begins with a brief solitary and somber horn solo, which later opens up to the more 'avant' sounds of 'Community Music'. The title track is where Marsh's compositions reach their most unpredictable and exciting moments, however. 'Monism' closes out the A side with a free jazz jamboree, complete with a spoken word delivery of a Sufi poem from Marsh himself. The album's B-side is relegated to more traditional structures, and features some of the most driving piano, drum and saxophone playing fans of the genre could hope to hear; at once loose and decidedly collaborative in its delivery. Perhaps prompted by Marsh's ten-year disappearance from the recording world, this long out of print recording has become a collector's edition for those familiar with it. Original copies have been known to sell for more than $100 among collectors. Manufactured Recordings is proud to present this reissued volume again on vinyl for the first time in 40 years, and on CD for the first time ever."

BROTHER AH Sound Awareness CD
"The renowned French horn player known as Brother Ah (aka Robert Northern) is one of the most prolific and respected musicians in the history of jazz music, with a recorded output spanning more than 30 years. Born in 1934 and raised in the south Bronx, Brother Ah was playing jazz trumpet as early as fifteen years of age. Following a classical French horn education at Austria's Vienna State Academy, he emerged in the late '50s and established himself as a skilled and consistent session musician, playing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, and numerous Broadway theater orchestras. Brother Ah recorded well into the '60s with some of the most illustrious names in the genre, including Donald Byrd, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Gil Evans and, perhaps most influentially, Sun Ra. In 1969, Ah formed his own group, the Musical Sound Awareness Ensemble, and released several works under his own name from 1974 onward. In the late '60s, his interest in non-western music developed, and his '70s recordings, incorporated elements of Eastern and 'Third World' music, fusing them with jazz structures. His first solo recording, Sound Awareness was released on the Strata East label in 1972. By this time, Ah had recorded extensively with the Sun Ra Arkestra and his solo work continued the boundary-pushing approaches he explored with that ensemble. Consisting of two side-length tracks, 'Beyond Yourself (The Midnight Confession)', and 'Love Piece', the album features notable appearances by percussionist Max Roach and the M'Boom Re:percussion Ensemble, as well as a 90-piece vocal choir. The 22-minute 'Beyond Yourself' is billed as 'a sound journey' in seven parts, outlining a man's struggle to either give up drugs or become a monk."

Over the past 20 years, Genevan duo Sinner DC have built a solid, yet discreet reputation on the international electronic music scene. Their ethereal intergalactic yet catchy melodies, full on emotions and melancholy, became, throughout the years, the band's trademark. Co-published by the prestigious Museum of Ethnography of Geneva and Swiss renowned Mental Groove Records, this first album entitled MEG / CDG inaugurates a new series of CDs devoted to contemporary compositions sourced from the monumental audio archives of the Museum. MEG / CDG's backbone contains music from Romania, Niger and southern United States, from the mid '30s to the early '50s that the Genevan Sinner DC selected while browsing the museum database. MEG / CDG is a kaleidoscopic album and a scenic trip - the title of the album and the songs are of IATA airport codes and explores the limits of the panoramic vision of the duo through hypnotic landscapes and imaginary places. The Museum of Ethnography of Geneva and Mental Groove look forward to continuing their collaboration.

COSTES Pas Encore Mort LP
"Costes has caused me so much trouble. Even today, 25 years after the last time I performed with him, I still have a hard time booking shows because he has not mellowed as I have and the venues are afraid, because of my past association with him, that there will be piss, shit, violence, genitalia, racial tension, cops, etc. Costes has caused himself so much trouble. He's been taken to court five times over his art, received countless death threats. When's the last time you can think of that ART has been taken so seriously -- as a life and death matter? And he perseveres. I think Costes is extraordinary. He ostentatiously thumbs not only his nose, but every single body part external AND internal, at any authority there is. Pas Encore Mort, a re-release of a 1997 CD, is uncharacteristically introspective, pretty, and sad. It is unsettling to see the man behind the gross warrior exposed, vulnerable, alone. I love and hate this album." -- Lisa Carver, Maine, U.S., April 2, 2016.Born in 1954, Jean-Louis Costes is possibly France's most transgressive and independent artist. He is a musician, singer/songwriter, performance artist, painter, writer, actor and director. His highly expressionist trash style is instantly recognizable no matter which mode of expression he adopts. A unique and uncompromising artist, Costes has released over 70 albums since 1986. His songs are mostly recorded in his home studio and display very raw explicit lyrics, with music alternating between rock, pop and noise. He is renowned for his infamous "Porno-Social" Operas, which can be described as an explosive mix of live music, theater, violent actions, sex, noise, chansons, romanticism, mysticism and social issues. He has toured Europe, North America and Japan. In the late 1990s, he began publishing his own texts, and since 2003, has authored four novels.

SHALABI, SAM Isis And Osiris LP
"Sam Shalabi presents Isis And Osiris; a dystopian fantasia for ud ruminations and iterated tape manipulations. Listening to Sam's music or playing with him is always a psychedelic bliss. When Isis And Osiris penetrates my ears I am possessed by an emergent universe where immanence and alienation, abjection and love meet. Nothing will be the same. The transformative effect of Sam Shalabi's cosmology is one of the most joyful and inspiring estrangement I experienced." -- Alexander St. Onge; Montreal, Quebec, March 2016.Sam Shalabi is an Egyptian-Canadian composer, improviser and guitarist living between Montreal and Cairo. Starting out during the late '70s punk era, his work has evolved into an experimental synthesis of modern Arabic Music that incorporates free improvisation, traditional Arabic music, noise, classical, text, and jazz. He has released five solo albums, five albums with Shalabi Effect, a free improvisation quartet that bridges western psychedelic music and Arabic Maqam and three albums with Land Of Kush, an experimental 30-member orchestra for which he composes. He has appeared on over 30 albums and toured Europe, North America and North Africa. Projects include collaborations with Alvarius B, Stefan Christoff and The Dwarves Of East Agouza, a Cairo-based trio with Maurice Louca and Alan Bishop. He is a founding member of Shalabi Effect.

5599 Heureusement Que le Sang Seche Vite LP
5599 is a new duo featuring France's electronic improvisation giant Jean-Marc Foussat on EMS Synthi AKS and current golden boy Augustin Brousseloux on electric guitar and alto saxophone. Heureusement que le sang seche vite features 3 tracks where guitar and saxophone interplay with analog synthesizer to create psychedelic, dense and textured soundscapes of aggressive noise onslaughts and moments of bliss. Born in Oran (Algeria) in 1955, Jean-Marc Foussat played in several experimental rock groups before he started a career as a sound engineer in diverse studios which progressed towards recording live improvised music around 1979. He has collaborated with labels such as Incus, Hat Hut, Po-Torch, Rift, Rec Rec, and Celluloid where he recorded a number of songs for Bill Laswell's seminal Massacre on the album Killing Time in 1981. In 1983, he self-released the groundbreaking Abattage which deserves its position on a pedestal amidst the greatest French improvisation records. Since the 1990s he returned to playing in improvisation groups such as Marteau Rouge, alongside Makoto Sato and Jean-Francois Pauvros, and Aliquid with Sylvain Guerineau. Born in 1999, saxophonist and guitarist Augustin Brousseloux is a young prodigy currently storming the French improvisation underground. At the age of 16, he has already collaborated -- live and on albums -- with heavyweights such as Noel Akchote, Costes and Jean-Marc Foussat.

POREST Modern Journal of Popular Savagery LP
Porest's fourth long-player, Modern Journal of Popular Savagery is a damning collection of parallel realities told in song and sound. Following 2006's masterful Tourrorists, MJoPS pits post-globalized hate pop, cabalistic text-to-speech drama and violent tape music against soapbox anthems and swirling barbed-wire psychedelia -- sometimes within the same track. The result: a terrifying and ridiculous audio shakedown that both avoids and completely indulges the inherent trappings of art and politics. Fuzzed out guitars and keyboards, epic modulated grooves, "samples" and far-out fucking field recordings index the colonization of our consciousness. You're already dead -- and none of your intellectual friends can save you. Guests include Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), Peter Conheim (Negativland), and Jake Rodriguez (Bran?Pos). Recorded between California, Syria, Vietnam and points in between.Across decades, Porest (aka Mark Gergis) has issued a trail of confounding agitprop sound art, tilted pop, diabolical radio dramas and carefully rearranged realities on the Abduction, Seeland and Resipiscent labels. Porest's blatant embezzlement of human syntax and cultural misunderstanding broadcasts vital mixed messages. Collaborations have included: Aavikko (Finland), Sun City Girls (USA), and Negativland (USA) among others. Gergis was a co-founder of the long-running experimental Bay Area music and performance collective Mono Pause -- as well as its offshoot Neung Phak, performing inspired renditions of southeast Asian musics. Since 2003, with the Sublime Frequencies label, an ethnographic music and film collective out of Seattle, Washington -- and more recently, with his own record label -- Sham Palace, Gergis has shared decades of research and scores of archived international music, film footage and sound recordings acquired during extensive travels in the Middle East, South East Asia and elsewhere.

Since 2004, Èlg (Laurent Gérard) has drawn concentric sound spirals made of musical pipes and entrails. He uses an arsenal of instruments and methods, constantly renewed while building improbable bridges between musique concrete and French song-writing, cartoon-like radiophonic creations and cosmic pop as well as lo-fi Dada-esque experimentation with electronic tentacles. Èlg is half of the electronic botanic duo Opera Mort, and a third of big band trios Orgue Agnes (with the members of Kaumwald) and Reines d'Angleterre (with Jo Tanz and Ghédalia Tazartes). The Dwarfs of East Agouza are a trio from Cairo featuring Maurice Louca (Alif, Bikya), Sam Shalabi (Land of Kush, Shalabi Effect) and Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls, The Invisible Hands, Alvarius B.). Born during 2012, the trio's instrumental improvisation-based explorations are propelled by Louca's North African percussion loops and shimmering keys, Shalabi's West African tinged free jazz guitar and grounded by Bishop's driving Krautrock-style acoustic bass. Following many a late night jam session, the band recorded hours of material during a three-day studio run in April 2014. After compiling and mixing the album in Montreal's Break Glass studio in July 2015, the refined result is Bes. HOLLER, YORK String Quartets (and more) CD
2010 Grawemeyer Award winner York Höller is here presenting his String Quartets (and more), played by the famous Minguet Quartett (Cologne), and Markus Bellheim (piano-professor and Vice President at Munich Musikhochschule). Among the composers of the middle generation in Europe, Höller is one of the most original and unconventional - an artist who has never let himself be appropriated by schools and aesthetic dogmas. Already early on he critically explored serial music and aleatoric and stochastic models of composition, took up impulses from the philosophical and scientific approaches to information and Gestalt theory, and developed from them his concept of "Gestalt composition", which also owes important aspects of inspiration to the Indian raga and the Arabian maqam techniques, and above all to medieval isorhythms. The Minguet Quartet, founded in 1988, is today one of the most internationally sought-after string quartets and gives guest performances in all the great concert halls of the world. They were awarded the coveted ECHO Klassik in 2010 for the complete SACD recording of Peter Ruzicka's string quartets (NEOS 10822-3CD). Markus Bellheim has been attracting attention as one of the most interesting and versatile pianists of his generation, at the latest since winning the International Messiaen Competition 2000 in Paris. His extensive concert activities have led him through all of Europe, to Asia and America.

ORLEANS, ELA Circles Of Upper And Lower Hell 2LP
Double LP version. "Circles of Upper and Lower Hell is the grandest, deepest work to date by Polish-born, Glasgow-based sound artist and composer Ela Orleans. From her beginnings inaugurating a lo-fi, homespun style that has since developed fully into a language uniquely her own, from tentative live outings featuring multiple instruments to a now-masterly command of sound, Orleans has become one of the most consistently surprising musicians of the global underground. The seventh album under her own name, this expansive vision, loosely based on Dante's Inferno but infused with deep personal experience, incorporates sound art, orchestral textures, synth pop and electronic music to construct a world equally peppered with loss and inspiration. It pulls all the strands of Orleans' previous work together into an epic depiction of turmoil wide in scope but reveling in detail. The album documents a far more personal approach to conventional songwriting. Previously, the artist's sonic textures have relied on samples cleaved out of context, buried songs beneath warped aural gauze, but Circles blows every element of Orleans's art upwards and further apart."

AMANAZ Africa 2LP
Repressed, miraculously. "Issued in 1975, this is the articulation of Zambia's Zamrock ethos. While other albums -- Rikki Ililonga's Zambia, Witch's Lazy Bones!! -- are competitors, it's hard to best this album as it covers each major quadrant of the Zamrock whole: it came from the mines; its musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks -- hard. Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, 'because of how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen... all the atrocities slave drivers committed. ' Thus, their 'Kale,' a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent's arc from slavery to Zambia's independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa's vibe ranges from anxious ('Amanaz') to escapist ('Easy Street') to straight-up pissed-off. On the 'History of Man,' his voice whiskey-burned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species. There's a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu's more restrained 'Khala My Friend,' which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there's the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic 'Sunday Morning,' which, as Kabwe recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release -- and the underground funk of 'Making the Scene.' The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-'60s rock -- punctuated, of course by Kanyepa's wah-wah and Mpofu's fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. 'Green Apple' is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa's sighing guitar. It is a perfectly arranged album, from the dichotomy of Mpofu's and Kanyepa's lead and rhythm guitars, to the vocal harmonies, to the rhythm section's sense of space and time, which allows Africa's funk to build. Inexplicably, Africa was given two separate mixes and two separate presses: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. We've presented them both here as they each have their appeal: it's up to the listener to pick the one he or she prefers. This is a highpoint of the Zamrock scene and we hope that this can be seen as its definitive reissue."

VA Basket Full of Dragons: A Tribute to Robbie Basho Vol II CD
Robbie Basho's guitar playing was first brought to light in 1965, when John Fahey released Basho's debut The Seal of the Blue Lotus (1965) on his own Takoma Records. Basho was armed with a unique and powerful singing voice, his 6 & 12 string guitar and a collection of special guitar tunings that he created (even originating the "Esoteric Doctrine of Color and Mood'' - a chart denoting a color and mood for each of his special tunings). After three decades of recordings and touring and a prodigious output, Basho went largely unnoticed. In 1986, his voice was forever silenced by a tragic accident. Basho's music displays an intense passion for different cultures from around the world - heavily influenced by the Japanese (his self-chosen last name inspired by the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho), Persian, Classical Indian, and a culture much closer to home: Native Americans. Basket Full of Dragons is a collection of both original compositions and new interpretations of Basho's songs, and is the second volume to pay tribute to Basho, following We Are All One, In The Sun (IMPREC 295CD, 2010). Both volumes are curated and produced by musician Buck Curran and feature an international lineup of artists. As with the first tribute, this volume includes a contribution by German guitarist Steffen Basho Junghans. Junghans maintains the Robbie Basho online archives, a vital resource for all things Basho. California-based guitarist Richard Osborn (a former student of Robbie Basho) contributes a gorgeous original composition. Rich has dedicated his life to exploring and composing raga based guitar music and evokes the pure spirit of his teacher. Glenn Jones is featured, a leading proponent in the world today of the American primitive tradition. Basket Full of Dragons also features: guitarist Chuck Johnson, Buck Curran joined by Italian singer Adele H, Syrian oud player Tammam Saeed and percussionist April Centrone, Italian guitarist Paolo Laboule Novellino, a duet by Henry Kaiser and Michael Gulezian, Israeli composer Yair Yona, Twelve Hides with Ben Tweddell, Mike Tamburo, the collaboration of Mariano Rodriguez, Karina Vismara and Jonah Schwartz and singer Eva Sheppard joined by her father Jesse Sheppard on 12-string guitar. The past volume, We Are All One, received great press: Acoustic Guitar Magazine placed it amongst its "Best Albums of 2010", Pitchfork gave it a rating of 7.8, Guitar Player Magazine named it an "Editors Top Pick" and Mojo Magazine rewarded it four stars.

HUTCHINGS, SOPHIE Wide Asleep CD
The Preservation label presents Wide Asleep, the third album from Sydney's Sophie Hutchings. Sophie Hutchings is a pianist and composer from Sydney. She began teaching herself piano at an early age before any tuition, developing her unique style through countless hours of secret practice. One of her earliest compositions, Hutchings has released three instrumental works to date, Becalmed (2010), Night Sky (2012) and White Light (2014), receiving fine recognition internationally for elegant and beautiful music compared to the likes of Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Peter Broderick and Dustin O'Halloran. UK music bible MOJO had Becalmed as one of its top five independent releases for 2010, calling the album "grand", "stirring" and "vigorous". The Guardian wrote that "her rippling piano has an intimate, contemplative quality." Other media have described Sophie's music as "frankly amazing", "unabashedly sincere" and "always with a genuine sense of beauty". With Wide Asleep, Hutchings has taken her compositional scope into larger realms of sound and feeling. It is her most searching work, based on ideas on consciousness between sleep and wakefulness. In her most dazzling and poignant pieces to date, Hutchings' piano lines extend with both electricity and elegance, winding through strings, textured ambience and choral voices through beauty and vitality. Reaching further with her music than ever before, Hutchings is in great company, recording Wide Asleep with Tim Whitten as producer, best known for his nuanced and dynamic work with The Necks. With Wide Asleep, Sophie Hutchings has once again taken her place as an accomplished and wonderfully engaging composer to fall in deeply with. Edition of 500.

CARLSON, MATT The View From Nowhere LP
The View From Nowhere is a record of experimental electronic music that explores possible relationships between voice and modular synthesis. Composed and recorded by Matt Carlson at Worksound in Portland Oregon, the record develops and expands ideas discernible in his early solo works or as one-half of the duo Golden Retriever. Built with a clear unity of approach centered on the voice and text as elements in synthesis, the record flattens the distance between the vocal and the musical. The voice sounds synthesized, and the synthesized sounds seem to be speaking to you. The View From Nowhere takes Carlson's interest in the sounds of attempted communication into the realm of the textual. Although melody and a good dose of Matt's unusual sense of humor shape the record, another key emphasis in the composition is his specific approach to rhythm and sequencing. Rhythmic patterns are used but the music is somehow never fully on or off the grid. Carlson opts to use Nancarrow-esque overlapping meters and tempos to keep the music out of any kind of predictable patterns of electronic music. The View From Nowhere is thematically centered around ideas of confusion, panic, misunderstanding, and "bad faith" communication. It's interested in the process of how something moves from being an "abstract" sound into becoming a signifier of specific meaning, and the interstitial space in between. The felt attempt to communicate meaning lay behind the artwork as well, standing as a visual representation of the way the music approaches language. The text-based imagery strives to exist between sense and nonsense, the meaningful and the meaningless. Individual syntactical units "point" to one another but don't necessarily cohere into comprehensible statements. Relationality is implied and seems to emerge merely by placing signifiers against one another. Taking influence from text-sound composers such as Charles Amirkhanian, the early voice-synthesis work of Charles Dodge, and Robert Ashley's more speech-heavy work, The View From Nowhere might be Matt Carlson's most challenging and refined record to date. It's like being near a million tiny entities all trying to communicate with you simultaneously, or being in a crowded place hearing the rhythms and cadences of communication but not quite being able to parse it.

HANSSON, BO Sagan Om Ringen CD
2016 repress. Reissue of what was the first ever release on Silence, initially issued in 1970. This was also the first Bo Hansson album, the Swedish legend known to be one of the earliest to place "space music". Produced as a tribute to the Tolkien trilogy, this is stunning instrumental psychedelic music, with plush atmospherics -- Don't Fear The Hobbit! This version is the original Swedish titled version, with one bonus track ("Tidiga skisser Från Midgård"); there is also an English-titled version with different bonus tracks. This is a digitally remastered issue from 2001. Performed by: Bo Hansson (Organs, guitar, moog, bass), Rune Carlsson (drums, congas), Gunnar Bergsten (saxophone), Sten Bergman (flute). "Lord of the Rings was released late in the fall of 1970 and became an immediate success. Bo himself was in the midst of a very creative period, new melodies were constantly popping up in his head, so when Lord of the Rings finally got released in other countries there were already three more tracks added compared to the first Swedish issue. In the encyclopedia Guide to Progressive Rock, Bo Hansson is mentioned with reverence and respect. He is the first to play 'space music', he is a precursor to the French prog-celebrities Gong and English Henry Cow, and contemporary style-formers as Genesis and Yes. Bo Hansson is an innovator in the most noble sense of the word."

ALGARNAS TRADGARD Framtiden är ett Svävande Skepp, Förankrat i Forntiden CD
2016 repress. 1995 reissue of this Silence album, originally issued in 1972. Älgarnas Trädgård's name translates as "Garden of the Elks" and this debut album has always stood as one of the pinnacles of underground psychedelic rock -- comparable to early Pink Floyd, Group 1850 and other world masters of space-out genius. The title translates as The Future is a Hovering Ship Anchored in the Past. The group employed an instrumental array made of: violins, rebec, cello, guitars, sitar, piano, zither, organ flutes, zinks, jew's harps, tablas, percussion, Moog-synthesizer & VC-3 Putney-synthesizer. Recorded at Studio Decibel in 1971, this CD reissue adds two bonus live tracks from 1972. From Dan Söderqvist's notes: "We have known each other since 1968, when we met in our home neighborhood Västra Frölunda, Gothenburg. We listened to everything; Perotinus heavenly choirs from the 13th century, Messien's heavy works for orchestra, Beefheart's Safe as Milk, with it's surreal lyrics, King Crimson's endless string of chords, the beautiful acoustic Third Ear Band, Terry Riley's minimalism and above all the psychedelic music of early Pink Floyd. Sometimes we played our 'dägga-däng-music', crazy rhythmical plays with acoustic guitars and hysterical giggles. Sometimes we just sat and listened to the sounds slowly disappearing into space ... We experimented with getting strange sounds out of our instruments, started to use amplifiers and played with echoes ... We constantly expanded our possibilities to get new sounds, with organs, mouth harps and pedals ... We got our hands on the first Moog module system that just about had reached Sweden. We mixed Middle Age instruments such as zinks and rebecs, sound effects, church bells, fragments of both Bach and The Beatles and improvised our way through the first album."

RODEN/IN BE TWEEN NOISE, STEVE Every Color Moving (1988-2003) 6CD BOX
Every Color Moving consists of six discs, covering seven hours of the first fifteen years of Steve Roden's musical activities. The first four discs contain unreleased works and impossible to find small editions. The last two discs offer a selection of tracks made for compilations during the same period. From the surprising early experiments to the development of his often imitated but never equalled "lowercase" aesthetic, these are some of Roden's earliest works, documenting numerous rare and unreleased recordings. The discs are accompanied with a 32 page booklet with an essay and extended track notes, written by the artist. Steve Roden (1964) is a visual and sound artist born in Los Angeles. Roden's work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, and performance. Roden's earliest musical experience was as the singer of the Los Angeles punk band Seditionaries from 1978 to 1982, performing locally with some famous bands from this scene. Roden's early works moved from loud to quiet in the midst of an emotional crisis at age 18, fueling a shift in his work, with the discovery of Eno's Obscure label. In the early -1990s Roden discovered the Broken Music catalog (an encyclopedic survey of records related to visual artists), offering a context for an artistic practice rooted in both visual and sound art. In 1990, Roden released his first recording on a self-released cassette titled the secret of happiness under the artist name In Be Tween Noise. Since then, Roden has released 45 solo recordings on various labels, alongside numerous collaborations and compilations. By the late 1990s, Roden began to use his own name as the artist of his solo recordings. Most of Roden's sound works tend towards using a singular source - such as objects, architectural spaces, field recordings, or texts. These things become abstracted through humble electronic processes to create new audio spaces, or "possible landscapes". In 2000, he used the term "lowercase" to describe a music that "bears a certain sense of quiet and humility". Over the years, he has created a rich and diverse body of work that is uniquely his own, mixing conceptual rigor, experimentation and musicality.

VA 391 Vol. 4: Umbria - Voyage Through The Deep 80s Underground In Italy 2CD
Spittle Records presents 391 Vol. 4: Umbria - Voyage Through The Deep 80s Underground In Italy. The 391 project was born in 1983 from the desire of two troubled teenagers, from a boring provincial town, Ascoli Piceno, to give life and form to a series of compilations on tape, a picture of the Italian music underground. The name choice was intended as a tribute to the homonymous magazine of Dadaist New York, drawn by painter and poet Francis Picabia. The intent was to geographically organize the musical material, probing the new wave and post-punk groups region by region: A mapping of Italy's music, the marginalized and angular, according to this selection criterion: represent the most radical of the new national rock scene, and be a group that grew up in the aftermath of the post-77 explosion, trying to capture its very essence. Despite a great deal of material collected, from various regions, the 391 project stopped in 1985, after the release of the first two volumes dedicated to Marche and Umbria. With the executive production of Spittle Records and involvement of old and new fellow adventurers, we resume the thread widening the sound spectrum, in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible. More than thirty years after its birth, 391 returns to unearth treasures, in many cases not yet emerged, through a new journey into deep Italian underground. Features: Nemo: Gli Amici Di Flash Gordon, L? Noize, Anime Di Gomma, I. BOOK OF AIR Vvolk CD
Book Of Air present Vvolk. Inspired by the slow tempo and invisible motion of nature; how the seasons pace without sudden turns, slow and gentle. Seemingly still, yet always in motion. Book Of Air is a series of bundled compositions, this being the second chapter. Opposed to the first quintet release Fieldtone (SR 412LP), the music out of the Vvolk series is played by a group of 18 improvisers with roots in jazz and classical music. The group investigates performing and improvising music, in close relation to present time; what are the possibilities in playing music, when changes in this music pass by unnoticed? How do we as musicians relate to the running time of a performance? How does our hearing and memory react to these slow changes? As a result, Vvolk lets the listener experience music which is less perceived in the present time, but rather occurs in our memory of the past. This clearly challenges the improvising musicians, and makes audience and performers discover new territories in collective improvisation. Vvolk is performed by Stijn Cools - drums; Indre Jurgeleviciuté - kankles; Benjamin Sauzereau - electric guitar; Bert Cools - electric guitar; Nathan Wouters - double bass; Laurens Smet - double bass; Hendrik Vanattenhoven - double bass; Ruben Machtelinckx - electric guitar; Fruz Tonteling - harmonium; Wout Gooris - Rhodes; Niels Van Heertum - euphonium; Thomas Jillings - tenor saxophone; Viktor Perdieus - tenor saxophone; Erik Bogaerts - alto saxophone; Frans van Isacker - alto saxophone; Mathieu Robert - soprano saxophone; Stefan Bracaval - flute; Sep François - drums and melodic percussion.

GORAGUER, ALAIN La Planete Sauvage LP
2016 repress. "Animated sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage (aka Fantastic Planet), winner at Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a bizarre and beautiful film. Towering blue-skinned figures, tiny humanoids in the midst of revolt, and drug-induced Tantric sex transport viewers to a truly magical setting. Composer Alain Goraguer creates an equally hypnotic score from a palette of effects-laden guitars, flutes, Fender Rhodes, and strings. While the lush arrangements are reminiscent of Goraguer's collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1960s, space-age synth flourishes suggest a more psychedelic era. Moody vignettes flow together in tense, slow-paced funk rhythms and Baroque textures. It comes as no surprise that La Planète Sauvage has been cited as an influence on contemporary artists such as French duo Air and American hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib. Gorgeous, interplanetary soundscapes resemble the surreal meeting point between Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds and Broadcast's Future Crayon. This long out-of-print vinyl release features the original soundtrack recording and newly designed artwork. Recommended for fans of Ennio Morricone, Basil Kirchin, and David Axelrod."

75 DOLLAR BILL Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock Cassette
Cassette version. 75 Dollar Bill, a project by Che Chen and Rick Brown present Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock. "Che's interest in the Arabic modes of Mauritanian music has marked our sound quite a bit but I have brought some things, too. The plywood crate I play is a big factor, defining, by its positive qualities (a nice warm 'boom' sound) as well as by its simplicity, what we're likely to do in the percussion realm. Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock, this new record, differs quite a bit from the previous one, notably in the rhythmic 'tone.' Wooden Bag (2015) was all forward momentum, stomping and shaking, but the new record explores a long-standing interest of mine: odd and 'compound' meters. In most of my previous musical activities, I've convinced my partners to delve into this, but in 75 Dollar Bill it has just felt natural and I believe Che's modal investigations and melodic/harmonic tendencies enhance (and are enhanced by) this combination. The current record differs from the last in another big way: reinforcements! Over our few years together, Che and I have frequently had friends play with us at some of our gigs. There have been all sorts of permutations of instruments and some great friends/players who don't all appear on this record but here we are lucky to have a bunch of them: Cheryl Kingan (of The Scene Is Now) on baritone and alto saxes, Andrew Lafkas (of Todd Capp's Mystery Train) on contrabass, Karen Waltuch (of Zeke & Karen) on viola, Rolyn Hu (of True Primes) on trumpet and Carey Balch (of Knoxville's Give Thanks) on floor tom. Please enjoy Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock. 'Earth' saw is one of our earliest tunes and, I think, the first result of this 'compound meter' approach. It's a slow 9 beat phrase Che came up with for this odd groove. 'Beni Said' has no fixed rhythmic cycle but a roughly unison melodic phrase and a pulsing, loose feeling of 3s and 4s played using a box full of bottle caps. 'Cummins Falls' features Carey Balch on Diddley-beat floor tom and me reprising the maracas. 'I'm Not Trying To Wake Up' is another of our compound meter songs, this one using an 18 beat scheme." - Rick Brown

Money Chicha is an Austin, Texas-based group featuring members of the Grammy-award winning Latin orchestra Grupo Fantasma and its offshoot funk outfit Brownout. They perform a fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched and percussion-heavy style of music inspired by the sounds of Peru and Colombia in the '60s and '70s. This style of music, sometimes called "chicha" music, is known for its infectious Latin beat, its psychedelic, surf guitar pyrotechnics, and its melodies influenced by the indigenous culture of the Andes mountains. The group's sound is derived from the exhilarating syncopations of congas, cowbell and timbales, the gritty tones of combo organs and vintage synthesizers, effects-laden guitar melodies, insistent basslines and a healthy dose of trippy effects. Money Chicha is a modern translation of this South American musical style interpreted by highly skilled veterans of America's most vibrant music town.
