DJRUM Space Race EP 12"
Djrum explores the upper reaches of the BPM register with Space Race EP. Here over two epic tracks, he offers two supreme cuts of exhilarating music. "Space Race Pts 1&2" kicks things off at house tempo, before picking up the pace to unfold into a celestial d'n'b roller. Djrum constantly weaves percussion, space, bass and melody together to create something other-worldly. "Pt 3 Sometimes I Share" is dominated by a honeyed vocal sample, deftly danced around by cleverly deployed hand claps amidst the tight, rifling percussion and on/off bass line. Artwork from Tel Aviv artist Klone Yourself.

MARCHETTI, WALTER Concerto For The Left Hand In One Movement CD
The Concerto For The Left Hand In One Movement, for piano, is the last unpublished composition of Walter Marchetti to be performed in public before the death of the author on May 12, 2015. This performance by Reinier van Houdt was recorded on April 29, 2015, at Onder De Linden in Valthermond, Netherlands, and is presented with liner notes by Gabriele Bonomo, translated from the Italian by Philip Corner. Composed in 1994, the Concerto For The Left Hand belongs to an ongoing series of works written between 1994 and 1997 -- along with "Con vista sui suoni," "Eight or Nine Movements for String Quartet," and "La perdita del tempo" -- which develop from a preceding composition titled "Canonic Variations for Orchestra on Prolapsed Time From Development to Hiccup of Black Cherry Jam." In these works Marchetti made a systematic and assertive return to conventional music notation, while also not excluding performance and installation practices and the use of pre-recorded "concrète" sounds which, since the '60s, had been his privileged field of action (a modality shared principally within the exquisitely iconoclast and desecratory activities of the ZAJ group). What was particularly interesting to Marchetti in this recourse to musical writing was the weakening of the meaning of the rigid normative apparatus of a musical score with the purpose of annihilating the factual potential of his system of prescriptions. The title alone is used to hide a paradox in which the notes to the performer intervene to subvert the following paradigm: "The pianist is obliged to hold a black umbrella opened over his head in his left hand during the whole performance of this concerto." From here the performer is confronted with two conceptually convergent possibilities in de-potentializing the apparatus of signs in the score: on the one hand, the restrictive imposition of the paradox by which the music cannot manifest itself while respecting the letter of the enunciation, which leads to the impossibility of the music's "existence" (i.e. the obligation of holding an open black umbrella in the same hand) or, on the other hand, the transgression of this encumbrance in favor of the implicit possibility of playing the score with the right hand, leaving the music subjected to its own manifestation no longer be able to coincide with its own realization -- "a magic made free from the lie of being truth." Limited edition of 300. Digipak with full-color booklet containing photos and the liner notes.

Restocked. Featuring sublime and unhinged music rarely heard outside of Northern Greece and Southern Albania, the performances presented in this collection span the range of plaintive, ancient dirges to hypnotic, droning dance pieces. A deep set of notes is accompanied by comprehensive lyrical translations as well as original artwork by R. Crumb. Respectfully crafted by Christopher King and Susan Archie for Angry Mom Records. DEAD C, THE Trouble 2CD
"'Every time I hear their recordings, I'm reminded that they are one of the greatest rock bands to ever pick up a guitar and attempt to play it wrong. Listening to The Dead C causes me to think differently. It brings up emotions with which I'm otherwise unfamiliar. It strikes to the essence of my being and reveals what otherwise remains hidden. I take solace in knowing that one out of every thirty of you reading this know exactly what I'm talking about. On the spectrum of The Dead C's sound output, Trouble could very well be seen as springing from the same realm as the massive 'Driver UFO,' one of the band's greatest tracks ever, off Harsh 70s Reality. There's a youthful aggression here, a churning anger, deadened by pounding drone. Much like H70s, this record serves as a gateway drug -- if you were ever looking for an album to play to a newbie curious about experimental rock, this would be it. The visceral strength of their performance trembles out of the speakers. The magnificence of their stamina survives each album side.' -- Ben Goldberg, Ba Da Bing"

SENNI, LORENZO Superimpositions LP
2016 repress. Superimpositions is the hyper-colored conceptual follow-up to multi-disciplinary Milanese artist, Lorenzo Senni's landmark LP, Quantum Jelly (EMEGO 152LP). It further consolidates, accelerates and evolves his idea of "Pointillistic Trance" -- an ascetic, extreme approach to the aesthetic essence of '90s-style trance/hard-trance -- with a broader range of song structures, minimalist moiré patterns, and tantric dancefloor arrangements, all executed to visceral impact and challenging, exhilarating effect. Angling deeper into his stripped set-up -- a computer-controlled JP8000 Roland Digital-Analog Modelled S-Source Synthesizer -- Superimpositions reveals seven glistening examples of Lorenzo's current praxis, finding the biting-point between emotional, real-time human input, and the sleek tension of synthesis. Opener "Happic" arches up with breathtaking effect, and never quite gives it back during its seemingly infinite ascent, while "Elegant, and Never Tiring" is a spine-tingling exercise in aerobic coefficients, and the title-track tiers teasing chords in a Sisyphean struggle for deferred gratification. At the LP's blinding, white-hot core, the heart-rush flux of bass arpeggios and spiraling hi-end in "Forever Headline" threaten to careen off the platter, harnessing the rush of a million 'crasher kids circa '98, before closer "PointillistiC" broadsides with a cascade of lip-bitingly beautiful, melancholic chords. It's the tenth, and arguably most impressive original release on cherry-picking label, Boomkat Editions. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi in Milan, cut at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering. Edition of 500 copies.

CRAIG & SONJA MOONEAR, CARL In The Mix: Cocoon Ibiza (2016) 2CD
Cocoon Recordings presents an unbelievable package just in time for 2016's Ibiza season featuring Sonja Moonear and one of the greatest house and techno producers of all time Carl Craig. Carl Craig is in charge of CD 1. The Detroit's '90s techno wunderkind and the mastermind behind some of the biggest house and techno records ever made leaves us almost speechless with his amazing selection and mix. Maestro Craig selected a fine list of tracks for his mix by fellow legends like DJ Pierre (remixed by Ricardo Villalobos), Luciano (remixed by Dennis Ferrer), DJ Deep or Agoria. Carl Craig created a perfect mix with power and deepness at the same time - this is high class techno music - especially the start of the CD with his exclusive intro edit of Luca Ballerini's "Impressions Of A Dawn". By including two more remixes by himself, the whole selection becomes a perfectly blended collage of music. Sonja Moonear is in charge of CD 2. It includes some real house lover's delights by artists like Elbee Bad, Ralphie Rosario's Energy Factor, Franck Roger (with D'julz), and the new US-Berliner Brett Johnson (with Cpen). What looks and sounds like a deep and housey collection develops pretty soon to a freaky and technoide mix. Sonja Moonear's mix follows a cool and sexy house direction but she really knows when to power up the pace before bringing back the cool deepness again. This DJ-mix touches us with its electronic soul vibe and Sonja Moonear really handed us a true summer mix in. Sonja includes some favorites by John Tejada and Ricardo Villalobos (together with Argenis Brito), who receives the honor to close her mix. This is a mix full of pure sex and kicking deepness. Carl Craig's mix features: Luca Ballerini, Publicist, Mark Fancuilli, Mark Broom, Floorplan, Adventice, Nicole Moudaber & Skin, Oxia, Joao Ceser and Chymera. Sonja Moonear's mix features: DKMA, The Mingers, Plastic, Alex Under, The Wise Caucasian, The Persuader, Jonsson/Alter, Dorisburg, XDB, Anthony Parasole, Alex Piccone and Andy Rantzen.

VA Brand New Wayo 2LP
2016 repress. Subtitled: Funk, Fast Times and Nigerian Boogie Badness 1979-1983. "With this release, Comb & Razor Sound launches its exploration of the colorful world of popular music from Nigeria, starting with the post-disco era of the late 1970s and early 80s. The years between 1979 and 1983 were Nigeria's Second Republic, when democracy finally returned after twenty-three years of uninterrupted military dictatorship. They were also the crest of Nigeria's oil boom, when surging oil prices made the petroleum-producing country a land of plenty, prosperity and profligacy. The influx of petrodollars meant an expansion in industry and the music industry in particular. Record companies upgraded their technology and cranked out a staggering volume of output to an audience hungry for music to celebrate the country's prospective rise as global power of the future. While it was a boom time for a wide variety of popular music styles, the predominant commercial sound was a post-afro beat, slickly modern dance groove that retrofitted the relentless four-on-thefloor bass beat of disco to a more laidback, upbeat-and-downbeat soul shuffle, mixing in jazz-funk, synthesizer pop and afro feeling. At the time, it was still mostly locally referred to as 'disco,' but has since been recognized as its own unique genre retrospectively dubbed 'Nigerian boogie.' A Brand New Wayo: Funk, Fast Times and Nigerian Boogie Badness collects 15 pulsing Nigerian boogie tracks in a lovingly compiled package chronicling one of the most progressive and creative eras in the history of African popular music." VA The Brazilian Boogie Connection: From Rio To Sao Paulo (1976-1983) 2LP
2016 repress; Double LP version. "This album is another chapter in the ongoing 'there's-muchmore- to-Brazil-than-bossa-nova' saga. It's filled with disco-era tracks produced for the Brazilian domestic marketplace, some of which were hits, others which were quite obscure. What binds them all together - besides their common origins, time period and overall musical approach - is the fact that their reputation has been steadily transcending Brazil's borders. This has allowed these tunes to find their place on set lists, want lists and in the crates of the world's most discerning DJs and tastemakers. Artists like Jorge Ben and Marcos Valle have been legendary and influential for decades, and the duo Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti dominated the Rio studio scene in the '80s before creating huge buzz overseas in recent years. Banda Black Rio and Cassiano are also both household names amongst crate diggers and fans of rare groove. While this album is sure to highlight the work of the artists featured on it, its main aim is to shine a spotlight on a sound and a style that continues to hypnotize scores of music lovers. Most importantly, its goal is to get dance floors moving across the world."

ATOBE, SHINICHI World LP
Demdike Stare prise another absolute gem from Japan's Shinichi Atobe; presenting six tracks of original, previously unreleased material recorded some time in the last 20 years in Saitama, Japan, perfectly complementing the sublime ambient house zen of his Butterfly Effect album (DDS 010CD, 2014). The reclusive artist has seen a lot of justified, and somewhat overdue, praise surrounding the reissue of his sole early release, the Ship Scope 12" by Demdike Stare (DDS 014EP, 2015), originally issued by Berlin's Chain Reaction label in 2001, whilst the dispatch of his distinguished and subtly diverse Butterfly Effect album arguably came as a surprise for many heads who had him pegged out solely as a dub house producer. His new World will expand those preconceptions again, coursing a beautifully louche and debonair vibe from the most minimal loops and motifs - the kind that one could play all day and would hardly ever tire of hearing them. The supple, floating DX7 bass contours and vaporous jazz chords of "Intro" start up like some Chicago or NYC deep house classic lost in its own reverie, and could go on for as long as it wants, before the rainy day piano house melancholy of "World 1" promptly inverts that supple aesthetic with a fizzing, hazy sort of depth perception and "World 2" switches again to a sort of trim dub momentum in stepping, swinging equilibrium, riding the groove like no other. Turn over and the lingering, slowed-down stroke of "World 3" sounds like it got waylaid from a session with Wolfgang Voigt, whilst "World 4" jettisons the bass altogether to whiz and skip away in the highest registers with an intoxicatingly heady, mesmerizing appeal which also makes the uniquely brittle but spacious breakbeat trip of "World 5" so narcotically seductive. This is highly idiosyncratic, exceptional material, with the highest recommendations to anyone with a taste for house and ambient's refined, soulful and experimental echelons. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. RIYL: DJ Sprinkles, Larry Heard, Kassem Mosse, SND.

NHK YX KOYXEN Doom Steppy Reverb CD
Kouhei Matsunaga's second album as NHK yx Koyxen - his label debut for Diagonal - is a pixel-pill gobbling, see-sawing wave of techno emotions presenting the Japanese artist at his most rugged and damaged. After recent LPs from Not Waving (DIAG 025CD/LP, 2016), Elon Katz (DIAG 029, 2016) and Russel Haswell (DIAG 024CD/LP, 2015), Diagonal now excel in drawing out powerful album statements from some of the most distinctive musicians in contemporary electronic music. As bonkers as the narwhal-cavorting-with-a-rhino artwork, Doom Steppy Reverb is the skizzo brother of new beta, a 3D spec'd rally thru some of NHK's darkest, most driven material, done with a gangster swang in deft minor key arrangements that hint at a certain rudeboy vulnerability. Its seven tracks toe a fine line between novel and nasty; sidewinding from warehouse acid to brukkin' garage techno by the brutal close of "1073+snare", or basic channeling Autechre/Reich-ian chords with sole-melting synth juice in "Y", only to unexpectedly turn out a baroque scally bubble, Zomby style, with "1082_s". Make no mistake, it's a record full of club bangers, though: "L gets on Lory D levels of neo acid house squirm and "1038_lo_oct" will demolish a big room at the right time thanks to some properly toned sub-bass, adding a new weapon to Diagonal's arsenal of world-scattered radge packets. It's proper fuel for DJs, dancers and headphone excursionists - and the artwork by Guy Featherstone, makes it just a good ol' laugh to look at. This is NHK's best work - and it demands to be felt. Mastered by Matt Colton. RIYL: Demdike Stare, Gescom, Blawan, Zomby.

HANCOCK, HERBIE Inventions & Dimensions LP
Doxy present a reissue of Herbie Hancock's Inventions & Dimensions (1964). "For his third album, Inventions & Dimensions, Herbie Hancock changed course dramatically. Instead of recording another multifaceted album like My Point of View (1963), he explored a Latin-inflected variation of post-bop with a small quartet. Hancock is the main harmonic focus of the music -- his three colleagues are bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Willie Bobo, and percussionist Osvaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez, who plays conga and bongo. Hancock has created an improvisational atmosphere where the rhythms are fluid and the chords, harmonies, and melodies are unexpected. On every song but one, the melodies and chords were improvised, with Hancock's harmonic ideas arising from the rhythms during the recording. The result is risky, unpredictable music that is intensely cerebral and quite satisfying. Inventions & Dimensions displays his willingness to experiment and illustrates that his playing is reaching new, idiosyncratic heights." -- All Music. Numbered first press, edition of 500.

COLEMAN, ORNETTE Change Of The Century LP
Doxy present a reissue of Ornette Coleman's album Change Of The Century, originally released in 1960. The second album by Ornette Coleman's legendary quartet featuring Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, Change Of The Century is every bit the equal of the monumental The Shape of Jazz to Come (OUT 5007LP, 1959), showcasing a group that was growing ever more confident in its revolutionary approach and the chemistry in the band members' interplay. When Coleman concentrates on melody, his main themes are catchier, and when the pieces emphasize group interaction, the improvisation is freer. Two of Coleman's most memorable classic compositions are here in their original forms - "Ramblin'" has all the swing and swagger of the blues, and the oddly disjointed "Una Muy Bonita", its theme stopping and starting in totally unexpected places; both secure their themes to stable, pedal-point bass figures. GORDON, DEXTER Our Man In Paris LP
Doxy present a reissue of Dexter Gordon's Our Man In Paris (1963). This 1963 date is titled for Dexter Gordon's living in self-imposed Parisian exile and recording there with two other expatriates and a French native. Along with Gordon, pianist Bud Powell and Kenny "Klook" Clarke were living in the "City of Lights" and were joined by the brilliant French bassman Pierre Michelot. Gordon is at the very top of his game here. His playing is crisp, tight, and full of playful fury. Powell, who at this stage of his life was almost continually plagued by personal problems, never sounded better than he does in this session. His playing is a tad more laid-back here, but is nonetheless full of the brilliant harmonic asides and incendiary single-note runs he is legendary for. The rhythm section is close-knit and stop-on-a-dime accurate. Numbered first press, edition of 500.

MINGUS, CHARLES Right Now LP
Doxy present a reissue of Charles Mingus's Right Now (1964). "With Clifford Jordan on tenor, John Handy on alto, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums, Charles Mingus went into San Francisco and whipped up a storm. This LP contains two compositions over 23-minutes each: 'New Fables' and 'Meditation (For A Pair Of Wire Cutters).' 'New Fables' features a ten-minute solo from Jordan, some fine ensemble work, and a solo encounter from Handy. Mingus changes the mood as he sees fit, and one would describe these different styles as avant-garde (in 1964), blues, flamenco, and straight-ahead jazz. Handy's work is stirring, deeply imaginative, technically thrilling, and a harbinger of what was to come the following year at Monterey. In 'Meditations' Mingus bowing the bass in the cello range with that certain sad quality, Jane Getz playing loose, free, and exciting, much as she does today, and a moment where Mingus joins Getz for a four-handed piano romp." -- All About Jazz. TYNER, MCCOY Nights Of Ballads & Blues LP
Doxy present a reissue of McCoy Tyner's Nights Of Ballads & Blues (1963). "As the title implies, this McCoy Tyner release is a low-key, after-hours affair. Far removed from the intensity of work with then-boss John Coltrane, Tyner stretches out on a fine mix of standards and bebop classics. The pianist, of course, always had his own fleet and rich way with ballads, in spite of the galvanizing marathon solos he became known for on live dates and his later experimental recordings with Coltrane. His ballad style is even touched with a bit of sentimentality, which thankfully is kept in check by a bevy of tasteful lines. Backed by the top-notch rhythm tandem of bassist Steve Davis and drummer Lex Humphries, Tyner finds the room to develop classic statements on highlights like Monk's ''Round Midnight', Ellington and Strayhorn's 'Satin Doll', and Parker's 'Star Eyes'. Ballads & Blues qualifies as one of the pianist's most enjoyable early discs." -- All Music. Numbered first press, edition of 500.

ASHBY, DOROTHY Dorothy Ashby LP
Doxy present a reissue of Dorothy Ashby's self-titled album, released in 1962. "A jazz harpist is a rare thing. First of all the harp is a rather unlikely instrument to swing. It's an awfully difficult instrument to play really well and it demands technique that is incongruous with swinging. Perhaps as important is the thinking that the harp, by the very nature of the instrument, is likely to attract musicians who, in themselves, are improbable swingers. Dorothy Ashby is, then, a rare thing. She is indeed a jazz harpist and she does swing. This is not hard jazz. This is an album that says jazz can, after all, be melodic, that a thing can be gentle without being weak and can be sweet without being saccharine. What is done here is done well, the improvisation is creative, and in typical Dorothy Ashby thinking - it's done in beautiful taste." -- Jim Rockwell, Station WKMH, Detroit (from original liner notes). COLTRANE, JOHN Within & Without Miles, Live 1960 2LP
The Miles Davis Quintet's 1960 European tour featuring John Coltrane marked the end of the most dynamic front line partnership since Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. This edition features the Quintet's complete April 8, 1960 performance at Kongresshaus in Zurich, Switzerland. Miles and Trane really stretched out on these tunes averaging about 14 minutes per song - superbly backed by Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. John Coltrane formed his first quartet as a leader at New York's Jazz Gallery in May, 1960. After a short trial with Steve Kuhn on piano, McCoy Tyner joined the group. Coltrane also began playing the soprano saxophone during his tenure at the Jazz Gallery. It features Trane's first recordings ever with McCoy Tyner. Numbered first press, edition of 500.

L.U.C.A. I Semi Del Futuro CD
L.U.C.A. is Francesco De Bellis aka Francisco. Years ago he started putting together some selections for a friend of his: Luca. The intention was to pick songs to be played during car rides, and like any other kind of ritual, this too would come with strict rules. You'd have to go through the whole selection of 100 tracks without skipping, because every single one was important: Be it the sounds, the arrangement or its creativity, each track was there for a very specific reason. It quickly became a monthly event which for several years evolved in a deep musical research without genre boundaries: disco and psychedelic, soundtracks, library music, exotica, electronic and dance music, Italo, new-wave, pop or prog. Tracks of each and any historical period and provenance had been featured in these special compilations. But it wasn't always that easy to come up with the right piece and eventually Francesco started producing a few on his own to fill in the gaps. After six tracks, it was quite clear that there was a project developing, one in which he could finally experiment freely, leaving behind the rules that often come with dance tracks. And so L.U.C.A. was born. I Semi Del Futuro is an album that embraces a new-hippie vibe, strongly pervaded by a mystical naturalism. This is a whole new universe in the making, where rumbling magmatic atmospheres evolve gradually in a journey through an idealist new world, celestial interludes revealing a full takeover of nature, with a pervasive library feel that dates back to the great Italian masters, carrying on Edizioni Mondo's legacy. The label name Mondo has its roots in "Mondo Movies", an Italian movie genre born in the '60s. Mondo movies are characterized by documentary-like content that addresses several topics from around the world. The Mondo label has the goal to produce music that is descriptive of concepts, images and environments. Mondo is inspired by library music, a genre frequently used as theme or background music in radio, film and television in that very same period.

PARKER & THE STARS OF MODERN JAZZ, CHARLIE Christmas Eve At Carnegie Hall 1949 CD
Charlie Parker & The Stars Of Modern Jazz, live at Carnegie Hall on Christmas Eve, 1949. Regarded by many as the apex of the bebop era, this remarkable Christmas concert featured a virtual who's-who of contemporary jazz giants, from Miles Davis and Stan Getz to Sarah Vaughan and Max Roach. But it's Charlie Parker who steals the show, with his legendary quintet, culminating in a heart-stopping rendition of "Ko Ko". Originally broadcast on WMCA Radio as Stars Of Modern Jazz, and MC'd by "Symphony Sid" Torin. The entire broadcast is presented here with background liner notes and images. Digitally remastered for greatly enhanced sound quality. An essential for all serious jazz fans.

CYCLIST, THE Pressing Matters 12"
The Cyclist's Pressing Matters harks back to the golden age of breakbeat; bendy synths and pliable bass smack in the face of brain melting breaks. Robag Wruhme's remix of "Pressing Matters" masterfully flips from its breaks origins into a twisted four-to-the-floor belter, with grandiose touches and church-like organs. "Back In '92" evokes memories 24-hour pirate radio output and raving in fields with light piano riffs and melodious keys over the choppy drums. Featuring the vocal talents of Tanaya Harper, "Push" has intricate drum patterns and rolling snares jar against the ethereal vocal performance and brooding synths.

KING TUBBY The Roots of Dub LP
2016 repress. LP version. Dynamic Sounds upgraded to 16-track recording in 1972 and King Tubby purchased, again with the help of a deal brokered by Bunny Lee, the old 4-track equipment and the MCI console from their Studio B. The four tracks now gave him a far wider scope to work with, and he began to create a new musical form where the bass and drum parts were brought up while the faders allowed Tubby to ease the vocal and rhythm in and out of the mix. It was only a matter of time before Tubby's dub plate experiments began to make it onto vinyl and the first-ever King Tubby album releases would feature a collection of his mixes to a selection of Strikers' rhythms. So please sit back and enjoy this historic set of sounds. These releases were the first to carry the name of King Tubby and the first to credit the great musicians that contributed so much to the rhythms that made these albums possible.

KING TUBBY Dub from the Roots LP
2016 repress. King Tubby's Dub from the Roots album was originally released in 1974. Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 28, 1941 and grew up in the High Holborn Street area of downtown Kingston. He studied electronics at Kingston's National Technical College and also in two correspondence courses from the U.S.A. When he had qualified, Tubby began repairing radios and other electrical appliances in a shack in the back yard of his mother's home. His work in the early days included winding transformers and building amplifiers for Kingston's sound systems. Tubby built his first sound system in 1957 playing jazz and rhythm & blues at local weddings and birthday parties. His reputation as a man who knew and understood both electronics and music grew steadily, and as the '60s drew to a close, Tubby purchased his own basic two-track equipment. He installed this alongside his dub cutting machine, a homemade mixing console, and his impressive collection of jazz albums in the back bedroom of his home at 18 Dromilly Avenue which he christened his music room. Lovingly restored, these releases were the first to carry the name of King Tubby and the first to credit the great musicians that contributed so much to the rhythms that made these albums possible.

KING TUBBY AND THE AGGROVATORS Shalom Dub LP
2016 repress. LP version. 2010 release. King Tubby and producer Bunny "Striker" Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music. After discovering a mistake that was made into a "serious joke" they went on to release the first pressings of this new musical genre, named "Dub Music." Tubby's vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny's vast catalog of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard... the remix/version cuts to an existing vocal tune. "Tubby did three original dub albums, Dub from the Roots, The Roots of Dub and Brass Rockers with Tommy McCook 'pon the flying cymbals. Where he mixed it with the horn going in and out in a dub way and one named Shalom Dub, you can call Tubby's, too, because he mixed the versions as they were off 45s.'' --Bunny "Striker" Lee

VA Kingston Allstars Meet Downtown at King Tubbys LP
LP version. 2016 repress. Kingston Sounds follow up with another great compilation in the shape of Kingston Allstars. 1973 to 1976 was a period in reggae's history when the music coming from Kingston Jamaica was at its peak. So many talented singers, who sang soulful/righteous songs, found their way onto tape. Maybe it was the competition between the studios like Randys Channel 1 and Harry J and the quality of the singers available to sing these tunes. Bunny Lee productions are once again under the spotlight, with rare tracks from Freddie McKay, Horace Andy, Jimmy Riley, Cornel Campbell, Wayne Jarrett, Johnny Clarke, Ronnie Davis and curiously a handful of tracks not usually associated with Striker Lee, like Locksley (sometimes Lacksley) Castell's "Some Good" (on the same rhythm that Augustus Pablo used for Hugh Mundell's "Revolution a Come"), Linval Thompsons's "Wicked Dem" (on Pablo's own "Rockers Dub" rhythm) and Yabby U's "Stand Up and Fight". But whatever caused the explosion the mighty voices. The tracks were culled together from sessions recorded at the fore mentioned legendary studios. Then taken to King Tubby's home style studio at 18 Drummlie Avenue in the Waterhouse district of Kingston. This is where the great dub-master himself would record the vocal tracks, a method in which he preferred to work and then mix the tracks Tubby style. Kingston Sound have travelled to Jamaica and listened to hours of master tapes to develop Kingston Allstars. So sit back and enjoy a wicked set by Kingston's finest.

PASCAL PINON Sundur CD
Pascal Pinon's third album is the Icelandic duo's rawest and most diverse musical statement within the frame of their folk-influenced, minimalistic sound. Sundur comprises material written over the course of one and a half years. While most parts of the album are sparsely orchestrated and follow the experimental lo-fi-leaning aesthetics of the duo's previous two records, Pascal Pinon (MORR 101CD/LP, 2010) and Twosomeness (MORR 121CD/LP, 2012), the overall tone has become rawer with its metronome-like rhythms, occasional synth lines and driving piano melodies. Sundur lends its title from the Icelandic proverb "sundur og saman" (meaning "apart and together") and could be considered the companion of Twosomeness. Thematically, it reflects upon the voluntary separation of the two sisters. "We had never been apart our entire lives until we finished touring with our last album", remembers Jófríður Ákadóttir. While Ásthildur went to Amsterdam to study classical piano and composition and back to Iceland, her sister Jófríður went to tour the world with her other band, Samaris. It turned Pascal Pinon's writing process upside down. Although Ásthildur and Jófríður frequently visited each other in the Netherlands and respectively Iceland from early 2014 until late 2015 to finish the writing process, the geographical separation also influenced their compositions and thus the album as a whole. "The fact that we spent so much time apart creates completely different connections between the songs than on Twosomeness, which for me makes it more diverse in the best way possible", says Ásthildur. Indeed Sundur sees two different people arriving at their shared creative goal. Due to a conflict of schedules, Ásthildur and Jófríður ended up recording the bulk of Sundur in only two days. Their father, composer Áki Ásgeirsson, helped out with the engineering and contributed percussions played with scrap metal he brought with him, including discarded parts of airplanes. While few of those details will be audible on the surface, the unpolished sound design and added bits are crucial to Sundur. "It makes the album feel more real and raw which is what it essentially is all about," explains Jófríður. "It's very sparse and a lot closer in the approach and in regards to the sound of our very first album. It's kind of funny that seven years later, we would go back to the same place where we were at age 14!"

WITCH Introduction LP
2016 repress. "Our comprehensive overview of Zambia's premier garage-, psych-, prog-, funk-,Afro-rock ensemble Witch, We Intend To Cause Havoc!, is now sold out in its 6LP box set form. So we are making the first four Witch albums available in archival reissue form. As with our box set, the audio is nigh-perfect -- restored and remastered from the original master tapes. The entirety of Witch's first album, restored and remastered from master tapes, and presented as an archival reissue. Witch's musical arc is contained to a five year span and, in retrospect, is a logical one. The band's first two, self-produced albums - released in unison with the birth of the commercial Zambian recording industry -- are exuberant experiments in garage rock, and are as influenced by the Rolling Stones as they are James Brown. Thus Introduction, their first, is the perfect starting point for anyone interested in delving into the Witch band, or Zamrock in general."

CRYSTALAUGUR Terranaut CD
Out-Sider Records present the first ever legit reissue of Crystalaugur's Terranaut, originally released in 1975. This reissue is done with the band's involvement. Crystalaugur were formed by four young ex-pats attending school in Singapore in the early 70s: Howard Kukla, Kim Bengs, Bryan Hall and Guy Rittger. For most of them this was their first serious musical experience. Terranaut was recorded on a 4-track machine and subsequently released by the band in a private edition of 200 copies on their own Warped Records imprint. Terranaut is ultimate underground, lo-fi, psychedelic rock. Loose feel, raw sound, spacey prog-funk touches, sound effects and some proto-DIY, pre-punk vibes which bring to mind Velvet Underground or avant-garage '70s Cleveland bands like Pere Ubu but also hard-rockers ala Pink Fairies or Stray. Bootlegged many times over the years, this is the first ever legit reissue of this "lost-in-time" psychedelic artefact. Includes insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Got Kinda Lost, Ugly Things), explaining the fascinating story behind Crystalaugur and debunking many myths and false rumors about the band and their only album. Cargill says, "Terranaut is a rollicking, rumbling and lightly ramshackle bomb of cosmic teenage hard rock informed by an infatuation with the early rumblings of progressive rock (given a proto-punk edge by the discontent of the group's constituents)." MARTIN, PAUL It Happened CD
Out-Sider Records present a revamped version of the 1996 Distortion Records Paul Martin compilation with It Happened. 1966-67 garage anthems, jangly folk-rock and baroque pop courtesy of prolific songwriter Paul Myerberg aka Paul Martin. "There a new man in town? Martin!" So began the liner notes from the picture sleeve of his second 45 record in 1967. Actually, Paul Martin started life as Paul Myerberg. Growing up in Manhattan, Paul was influenced by the exciting music of the day, like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. In the mid-sixties Paul started writing and recording some impressive demos which ran the gamut from garage-punk, to jangly folk-rock, soul-pop and baroque, orchestrated pop. Many of these were cut on 4-track tape at Tower Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan with the help and guidance of the skilled jazz musician, Frank Owens. While at Tower, Paul met Herb Ostrow who released Paul's first single on the Impex label out of Philadelphia. "It Happened", a terrific garage number, came out in the spring of 1966. The following year, Paul released a second 45 on his own Rodin label - "The Last Remains Of Our Love" (another impressive, passionate garage gem), backed with "The Fairy Princess" (a dreamy pop-psych track). Almost 30 years later Paul's first album was released on the Distortions Records label in 1996, compiling tracks from his two sought-after singles plus studio demos and acetates. For many people, this was the first introduction to the music of Paul Martin. "An Aladdin's cave of well-crafted garage pop" -- Robert Cochrane (CultureCatch). Features new artwork and an insert with rare photos and liner notes. Newly remastered sound. Features one previously unreleased track from 1967.

SANCHEZ Y SU ROCK BAND, PEPE Regresion CD
Pharaway Sounds present a reissue of Pepe Sanchez Y Su Rock Band's Regresión, originally released in 1976. Pepe Sánchez is a real legend when talking about drumming in Spain. From his beginnings in the '60s jamming with Pedro Iturralde, Tete Montoliu and Vlady Bas at the influential Whisky Jazz Club in Madrid, to recording in Miami with Diana Ross or Barbra Streisand; from working under the wings of Rafael Trabucchelli, Waldo de los Ríos, Augusto Algueró and Mancini to playing live with Barry White - Not forgetting his incursions in progressive rock with Araxes or doing session work for seminal Spanish albums like Gipsy Rock (1974) by Las Grecas among others. Pepe and his group of friends (Manuel Gas, Juan Carlos Calderón, Pepe Ébano, Tito Duarte, Juan Cano) were the most requested Spanish session musicians of the time, appearing in countless recordings. In the mid-70s, he was approached by the Marfer label: the idea was to create an instrumental album based on Flamenco music and Spanish folklore but with a modern approach, adding electric guitars, electric bass, drums. Pepe recruited some of his friends, all of them top session musicians with a jazz/pop background, and the result was Regresión, his first solo album. It's an incredible fusion of jazz, funk, rock, flamenco and psychedelic/progressive sounds highlighted by the powerful drumming of Pepe, the wicked fuzz-wah guitar of Carlos Villa (Vainica Doble, Las Grecas), the sax and flute of jazz giant Pedro Iturralde and Manolo Morales (Jayme Marques, Bebu Silvetti), the piano of Eddy Guerin (Tete Montoliu, Santisteban, Jayme Marques, Manuel Gas), the trumpet of Juan Cano (Vlady Bass, Juan Carlos Calderón) and José Luis Medrano (Dolores, Márquez), the percussion of Pepe Ébano (Elkin & Nelson, Manuel Gas). Includes the monster rare groove /funk track "Sentimiento". Regresión is a Spanish jazz-funk/prog-psych holy grail featuring the crème de la crème of Spain's session musicians of the time. Original artwork in gatefold sleeve. Master tape sound. Liner notes by Spanish jazz/funk expert Javi Bayo. Includes two bonus tracks taken from his rare "cosmic disco" non-LP 45 from 1980. FAKROUN, AHMED Mots D'Amour CD
PMG present a reissue of Ahmed Fakroun's Mots D'Amour, originally released in 1983. The Arab world back in the '70s and '80s gave us quite a few very interesting rock and pop acts. Ahmed Fakroun from Libya was definitely one of them. His 1983 Mots D'Amour, means "Love Words" in English. His kind of ethno pop seems to go deeper than just to the charts, where songs like "Soleil Soleil" - a typical yet outstanding synth-pop/new-wave anthem that would have gone well with David Bowie or Duran Duran in the early '80s - would have belonged. Other tunes are more Oriental with great string arrangements and those mystical melodies that only Arab and Oriental music provides. It goes forth and back with these elements. Mots D'Amour is a rather colorful affair, when it comes to '80s pop music and within the fine arrangements, there is a lot of solid handcraft from the instrumental section. Whoever worked with Ahmed Fakroun in the studio during the album production shall be praised and blessed for his talent as well. All in all, this is one of the lost gems of '80s pop music. Compared to many European releases from 1983, Mots D'Amour can easily match up with all of them and has several outstanding evergreens on board. The sound is perfect for the time as well. Grab a copy of this reissue and make your dance party go crazy with this fascinating guy from Libya.

At the age of 13, Zdenka was a professional singer with the duo Hani and later on she took a trip through the worldwide pop music scene, until her return to Croatia. By 1978, she was ready to release her first solo album, which is nearly impossible to find. Zdenka and her team of producers combined disco funk, haunting electronic pieces, lush soulful ballads and glam oriented power-pop with a rocking edge together with one common denominator, the utterly distinctive and charismatic voice of Mrs. Kovacicek. It is a very colorful affair. She could easily be a black disco queen in the vein of Donna Summer. The Croatian language adds a great touch of exotica to the whole album as well. The music itself is Western-oriented: funky, soulish, bluesy and glammy, with modal jazzy elements. It feels honest and from the heart, from the first to the last song. You can say that Zdenka Kovacicek plays the music that was popular at the time, when this album was recorded, with a twist of her own spirit thrown in, which in the end makes it an outstanding and colorful record. Drop the needle anywhere on this black pearl and you will always be swallowed by an irresistibly hot groove and end up in a joyful mood.

BLACK, STEVE Village Boogie CD
After starting his musical career back in 1968, the Nigerian artist, drummer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Steve Black released his fantastic and unique album Village Boogie in 1979. Village Boogie really deserves the status of a legendary rarity and holy-grail for fans of Afro-funk. The original album is incredibly rare today. On this unique album Steve Black presents a new version of the smasher, "Brand New Wayo", originally played by the band Mixed Grill, in which Steve Black was also the singer. Along with that hit, Village Boogie gives us six other groovers and movers that make your hips shake like you were hit by an earthquake, and in fact this is an earthquake of ever pulsating polyrhythmic drum and percussion patterns. A solid platform for lush horn arrangements and swinging bass lines. A little bit of guitar and other instrumentation adds color to the whole wild steaming funky sound and on top we find the utterly distinctive voice of Mr. Steve Black. Village Boogie comes as strong as the best U.S. funk releases of the '70s, but this has very special Nigerian power to make anyone move their hips, coming from the very depth of the musicians' souls. The album spreads a joyful and jolly feeling where and whenever you make it rotate on your turntable. It's a brilliant Afro-funk gem that everybody needs to hear. The concentration of real anthems moves on a highest level.

CAMACHO BAND, THE RAY Reach Out CD
Reach Out (1979) is one of the two albums by the disco outfit The Ray Camacho Band with bandleader Ray Camacho, exploring the field of the funky club dance music happening at that time. PMG reissue Reach Out, an album which offers booty shakers in ever-pulsating grooves. The needle lowers down and hits the vinyl and a beat like flashing lights sets in. Bass guitar, drums and percussions weave a tight web of rhythm patterns that capture your body right away and set you into a state of trance. You recognize Latin influences here and there, which become obvious when the horns blow out lush harmonies and relaxed but hot-blooded melodies hit your ears. And indeed Ray Camacho actually comes from Latin music. He mixes both worlds very well on this record. Reach Out is a massive collection of sheer disco funk hits. You will dance and dance to these perfectly produced and executed songs that stick to your mind for quite a long time after the music has faded. Reach Out is an all-in-all handmade album with burning performances of all instrumentalists, with an emphasis on the extended rhythm section. If you love your funky music slick and steaming, this release is for you.

AKTION Groove The Funk CD
PMG present a reissue of Aktion's Groove The Funk, originally released in 1975. Groove The Funk is an essential and influential early Afro-funk album. The album was released in Nigeria and the whole LP is really something excitingly special, carrying a unique style of fuzz guitar and keyboard with ecstasy rhythms that can be experienced only from the heart of Africa. Nigeria had a rich musical history with a variety of bands that were playing their unique Afro-funk with incredible rhythms - In Aktion's case thanks to one of the best drummers of that time, Ben Alaka. Sadly most of the scene vanished like in Zambia and their Zam rock scene, but thanks to collectors worldwide a part of Nigerian music heritage remained with us to be enjoyed. Aktion (also known as The Action 13 or The Actions) were one of the most explosive bands. They were from Warri, which is a city in south Nigeria and their debut album was released by Clover Recording Organization from city of Aba. Clover Records founder Ben Okonkwo was a very influential man for the Nigerian music scene. His label released a lot of music including (Super)Wings, Akwassa, The Visitors, Mary Afi Usuah, Folk 77, The Doves, The Apostles, Mansion as well as some fine compilations of Clover artists. Renny Pearl Nwosa was the Aktion's leader together with Lemmy Faith Nwani, who was a well-respected drummer playing even for the best known Nigerian Funk band The Funkees. Renny and Lemmy together also formed the band The Stormmers, who recorded two incredible albums. Aktion were playing all across their part of the country. Nigeria had a very well-known club called Lido Night Club and Restaurant and Aktion were staying there for a while. They played many college campuses all around Nigeria and also many villages to entertain Eastside students. Aktion later on recorded and successfully released another album Celebration in 1977 and then some members moved on to join The Stormmers and One World. Groove The Funk is a very exciting intervention in one of the most exploding scenes coming from Africa. It's Afro-beat in its best form mixed with amazing funky-psych grooves. Lot's of fuzz guitar and bad-ass keyboard playing. Certainly a great look into Nigerian scene.

DUKE & THE LOVE FAMILY, EFFI Mr. Love CD
PMG present a reissue of Effi Duke & The Love Family's Mr. Love, originally released in 1980. Nigeria had a unique music scene which began spreading rapidly in the 1970s. The era was based on unspoiled use of fuzz pedal, keyboards and indisputable influences of the psychedelic blues bands of the West. In 1980, Effi Duke & The Love Family came out with their debut Mr. Love. It was released by Homzy Records which was a home of many Afro-funk records, going strong from mid '70s toward '80s. Mr. Love was one of the label's most energetic albums. The '80s were definitely more into a jazzy sound with disco slowly infiltrating the African music scene. What's so unique about Mr. Love is Effi Duke's love for guitar-based jazz and together with African rhythms and funky bass. His album is a funk/jazz/disco hybrid. He's an incredible guitarist and also at the time of this LP, an ex-Wings member. They were one of the most popular bands from Nigeria. Effi Duke was a key part of the scene with being member of The Wings, The Visitors, The Apostles, he played also the guitars on Mary Afi Usuah's fantastic second LP African Woman (PMG 014CD/LP, 1978) and on many other great albums including the incredible Folk 77 album, Muzik (1978).

JONES, BERKELY IKE Nation Building CD
PMG present a reissue of Berkely Ike Jones's Nation Building, originally released in 1979. Nation Building is a real forgotten gem from the late '70s and is among the very best Afro-beat disco albums ever. Berkely Ike Jones is one of the icons of the Nigerian scene being the guitarist and founder of BLO. BLO were one of the very best progressive bands from Nigeria and managed to release several albums for EMI (Nigeria) and Afrodisia Records. BLO are definitely a ground-breaking band that managed to further establish the entire Afro-funk genre. At the time Ginger Baker of Cream went to travel to Nigeria and invited Berkely Ike Jones to be part of session-band Salt. They went back to the UK and toured in Europe. Berkely Ike Jones played with many bands like with Ofege on their Try And Love album (1973) and he also appeared on many other great albums by artists like Steve Black, Lijadu Sisters, Tee Mac, Kris Okotie, Sonny Okosuns Ozziddi, "Blackman" Akeeb Kareem, Mixed Grill, Don Bruce And The Angels and Felix Lebarty. Nation Building is his solo project recorded in the late 1970s on Skylark Records. The original LP is extremely rare and very expensive, so this reissue is a chance to listen to some really great Afro-beat music.

HEADS FUNK BAND Hard World CD
PMG present a reissue of Heads Funk Band's Hard World, originally released in 1975. Hard World is the first of three albums released by Heads Funk Band and it's one of the most rare LPs coming from Nigeria. It is a pure, well-crafted Afro-funk. Heads Funk Band is related to Akwassa. Both are two exceptional bands with the same members, but co-existed simultaneously featuring Felix Odey (Feladey) on guitar and Eddie Offeyi on drums. The original forming duo of Akwassa was Felix Day (guitar, vocals) and Kevin Coburn (keyboards, synths, vocals), who collaborated with guest musicians, which later turned out to be the actual Heads Funk Band. Some rumors say all of them were in both bands and musically speaking, there are a lot of similarities. Akwassa released two incredibly rare albums, while Heads Funk Band managed to release three LPs, of which Hard World is the most hard to find.

USUAH, MARY AFI African Woman CD
PMG present a reissue of Mary Afi Usuah's African Woman, originally released in 1978. "Mary Afi Usuah trained as an a opera singer at the prestigious St Cecilia Academy in Rome and spent 13 years touring Europe with artists like Duke Ellington and Deep Purple. She matched vocal chops with Robert Plant performing with Led Zeppelin and blew away the top names on the Lagos scene when she returned to Nigeria. She also broke a few hearts with her killer smile, if some accounts are to be believed. African Woman marshals these experiences into an exceptionally powerful and diverse album. From the Tina Turner stomp of "What's A Woman To Do", to the Aretha-style musings of the title track, Mary takes everything she learned on the road to tell her story about her continent in a distinctly African manner. The boys from Akwassa were on hand to ensure that everything was kept extra tight and funky. Mary Afi Usuah only released two albums but she is undeniably one of the greatest female singers the African continent has produced. African Woman serves as her legacy, along with the remarkable number of Nigerian female singers she mentored and inspired." -- Peter Moore. "I met Mary Afi Usuah in 1979 while I was the lead singer with Tee Mac Collection. We were based at Surulere night club in Lagos, Nigeria. She came in from Calabar in the Cross river state. She was a beauty with her Afro hair and had a very strong voice and was very powerful on stage. Her performance was electrifying. She did a lot of shows with us and together we got the crowd rocking. A very dark complexioned lady, she was full of life and love. Her smiles would sweep any man off her feet instantly and I immediately recognized a talent that go all over the world. Her music is a blend of African rhythms, soul and funk with heavy bassline. I am glad to let you know that the vinyl you have in your hands now contains music that will tickle all ears for a very long time. Happy listening." -- Steve Black.

STEVO Musica Negra CD
PMG present a reissue of Stevo's Musica Negra, originally released in 1978. Musica Negra is a missing link, a real lost gem of the Atlanta funk music scene. The album was written and produced by Calvin Arnold with Tommy Stewart, Barney Conway and Herb Lance as engineer. The original LP was pressed in a ridiculously limited edition and the album was meant to be a showcase for the Atlanta studios. The names of some young start-ups were placed on the cover and they were said to be the musicians, in fact, those youngsters had nothing to do with the origin of this amazing album. On this PMG reissue the real artists are named: Stevo Milner, Curt Mitchell, Tommy Stewart, J.D. Morris and Harry Case, plus a few guest musicians. According to Calvin Arnold, approximately just 50 copies of the original LP were distributed in 1978, selling for over 1,000 USD today. To the inner circle of the Atlanta sound music factory, Calvin Arnold is a musical legend, a pivotal mastermind and musical wizard whose contributions helped make some of Atlanta sound's most memorable and infectious grooves. His cunning sense of rhythm, extensive knowledge and experience in music production, arrangement and publishing make him a musical force to be reckoned with. Preferring the background grind to the limelight, Calvin Arnold delighted most in the molding of aspiring musicians, honing new talents, smoothing off their rough edges. His generosity and genius catapulted those who worked with him into inspirational new levels, pushing musical boundaries, daring to experiment and create refreshingly new, yet familiar sounds.

AKWASSA La'ila CD
PMG present a reissue of Akwassa's La'ila, originally released in 1975. Akwassa were among the best Afro-beat bands coming from Nigeria. They were one of the early Nigerian Funk bands to get an album out. They were related to the Heads Funk Band and most members were part of both bands. They managed to release two albums as Akwassa. Their debut La'ila came out on a well-known Afro-beat label, Afrodisia Records. Akwassa were originally a duo made of Felix Day (guitar and vocals) and Kevin Coburn (organ, synthesizer and vocals). Felix Day is actually Feladey, the guitarist in Aktion (another top-notch Nigerian). On La'ila the band used a lot of synthesizers and the overall sound is very pleasing. Overall, the album has a raw and unpolished sound, but that's what brings that certain spark for being among the very best in the Afro-beat genre.

DANDY, TREVOR Don't Cry Little Tree CD
PMG present a reissue of Trevor Dandy's Don't Cry Little Tree, originally released in 1970. With Don't Cry Little Tree, Trevor Dandy created a gentle album full of consoling tunes that attest his trustful relationship to God. Just as you might know it from Cat Stevens's Morning Has Broken (1981), just with more soul - although this association might be caused by the insistent use of piano on this record. Once you hear these songs, it will be hard to deny Trevor's gospel roots, which surface musically steadily and are underlined by the religious lyrics. Don't Cry Little Tree was the first production of the famous Canadian producer Paul Zaza, who says this about this ultra-rare pearl of funky gospel music: "This album was done with no budget and very little equipment. Basically, Trevor Dandy was a gospel singer in a church group. He wanted to record an album to sell at various church gatherings. I was impressed with his lyrics and unique voice so I agreed to produce the record in the basement of my father's house (where I was still living). The album was put together on a 'shoe-string' budget and 1,000 copies were pressed on vinyl. Most were never sold and thrown out. I'm happy that now, almost 50 years later, there appears to be an audience for him."

PINO, GERALDO Boogie Fever CD
PMG present a reissue of Geraldo Pino's Boogie Fever, originally released in 1978. "When Geraldo Pino rolled into town from Sierra Leone with his Heartbeats, Nigeria had never seen anything quite like them. Slick, tight and playing the latest James Brown-style funk on very expensive equipment, they soon had the country in their thrall. 'Made me fall right on my ass!' a chastened Fela Kuti remembered in 1982. Fans of Geraldo's disarmingly eloquent enunciation on early albums may be shocked by the gruff, rawer tones on Boogie Fever. The album starts with a jaunty reggae track extolling the virtues of 'Ganja' and later, 'Boogie Fever' sounds like it was recorded down in Trenchtown after Geraldo had taken a toke or two of his own advice. Even the more traditional funk tracks like 'African Hustle' have a darker, more threatening vibe. Not that that is a bad thing. Boogie Fever is the sound of consummate musician letting his hair down. Or in Geraldo's case, letting it grow into a tight Afro and not bothering to watch his 'P's and Q's' anymore." -- Peter Moore. "Geraldo Pino came to Nigeria from Freetown in Sierra Leone in 1968 with his band The Heartbeats and quickly changed the music scene completely. He was the first bandleader that brought sophistication into show business. He owned the best musical equipment, his costumes on stage were fantastic and his musicians were good looking guys with Afro hair styles. His drummer then was Francis Foster who later played percussion with Paul Simon. Pino got the title of 'The Hardest Working Man In Show Business' in Nigeria. Girls loved him. I later joined his band with new set of musicians in 1974 as a singer while he based in Kano in the north of Nigeria. To survive in Nigeria those days as a musician you have to be very good on stage and Pino was. His stagecraft was exhilarating, his costumes were dazzling, he commanded the band and his audience wherever he played with his dance steps and he became an inspiration to many musicians." -- Steve Black.

CLETIN, BENIS Jungle Magic CD
PMG present a reissue of Benis Cletin's Jungle Magic, originally released in 1979. "Considered an acid boogie classic, Jungle Magic is a cosmic transmission from the early days of Nigerian disco. The bass lines are lethal. The synths are fat and squelchy. And the groove is non-stop and primal. Channeling the jungle Gods of funk and introducing them to Donna Summers, the title track takes you to a freaky place you didn't know existed but never want to leave. 'Love Forever' brings a Calypso party vibe while 'Fireman' suggests Prince may have been listening to Benis when he wrote 'Alphabet Street'. The album was composed and produced by Benis Cletin. He also played guitar and synthesizer and sang lead vocals. George Achini from the Mighty Flames stars on bass and Mambo Sticks, Nigeria's leading disco drummer, lays down the rock solid grooves. Jungle Magic remains the album where he introduced his irresistible brand of psychedelic disco funk to world." -- Peter Moore.

BLO Phase IV CD
PMG present a reissue of BLO's Phase IV, originally released in 1976. "Phase IV is BLO at the height of their not inconsiderable powers. Buzzing after a hugely successful tour of Denmark and Norway, the Afro-funk trio returned to London in 1975 and headed straight into the Orange Studios to get the magic down on tape. BLO had been fixtures on the Nigerian scene since they started out as Clusters International in 1970. The original 'O' in the band, bassist Mike Odumosu, had left to join Osibisa by Phase IV, (although he appears on the cover and gets a vocal credit) and was replaced by velvet-voiced keyboardist, Otu Udofa. Berkley Jones's guitar work is still immense - have a listen to 'Scandi Boogie' and 'Music Make You Happy'. And the sweet breakdowns by drummer Laolu Akins on 'Number One' made it an instant b-boy breakdance classic. Rightly regarded as the holy grail of Afro boogie, Phase IV is an extraordinary blend of highlife, rock, blues and soul that sounds just as good through headphones as it does on the dancefloor." -- Peter Moore. "These guys were known as Clusters International when I was their lead singer in Lagos in 1970. We then moved with Tee Mac and started The Afro Collection under a new management. They later changed the music scene in Nigeria when they started a very funky three piece band known as BLO. They were very tight and played Nigerian funk which is a blend of highlife, rock with a trace of blues. It wasn't a surprise when they quickly conquered Lagos and other parts of Nigeria with their unique style of music and performance and moved to London where Phase IV was recorded. Before this they had several hits in Nigeria. After a very successful tour of six cities in Denmark and four cities in Norway, they returned to London and straight into Orange Studios where Phase IV was recorded. It is the accumulation of many years of experience with their unique style of music. BLO Phase IV is sure to blow your mind." -- Steve Black.

KANONU, ALEKE Aleke CD
PMG present a reissue of Aleke Kanonu's Aleke, originally released in 1980. "After spending much of the '70s humping his congos around New York as a session musician, Nigerian Aleke Kanonu pulled in some favors to record an album of his own. The result was Aleke, a criminally obscure Afrobeat/funk/jazz masterpiece featuring Buddy Williams on drums, George Davis on guitar and a cameo from Wynton Marsalis on flugelhorn. There are only four tracks on the album but they are all killers. 'N'Gwode' sounds like Fela Kuti and Manu Dibangu hanging out with Bobby Womack, probably somewhere across 110th Street. 'Keep New York Clean' struts like Shaft after a successful bust. And 'Mothers Day' keeps things sweet and soulful, before Wynton Marsalis brings back the groove with his flugelhorn on 'Home Sweet Home'. Until recently you would have had to take out a second mortgage to get hold of Akele. And sold a kidney for the Happiness/Nwanne, Nwanne, Nwanne 12" (1982) Kanonu released a year later." -- Peter Moore. CD version includes both tracks from the Happiness/Nwanne, Nwanne, Nwanne 12".

STORMMERS, THE Lovers Song CD
PMG present a reissue of The Stormmers's Lovers Song, originally released in 1981. "The Stormmers were led by Renny Pearl, former bandleader and bass player with Aktion, an Afro funk band from Warri that burned brightly and briefly in the mid '70s. With the help of Jake Sollo, an ex-Funkee and recently reconstituted disco dandy, they created Lovers Song, an album of frantically musical bass lines, skittery hi-hats and an irresistible urge to get onto the dancefloor. 'Love Or Money' has the swagger of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. 'Super D. Jay' has the sure-footedness of a well-selected playlist. 'Sexy Woman', with its refrain of 'I need you, I want you, you turn me on, you're beautiful' is the sound of a clubber desperately trying to find someone, anyone, so they don't have to go home alone. The album was recorded in Nigeria and the UK and released in 1981, a time in Nigeria when oil prices were falling, beats-per-minute were rising and clubbers wanted to party like there was no tomorrow. The urgent, salacious sounds of The Stormmers suited the mood perfectly." -- Peter Moore.

SCHWARZ, JEAN Year of the Horse and other electroacoustic works 1974-1986 2CD
Jean Schwarz joined the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in 1969. In the same year, he also worked as an engineer and researcher at the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in the ethnomusicology department of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris. He founded Celia Records in 1980 releasing a vast catalog of his own works as well as collaborations. Schwarz favors electronic sounds - the raw material from which he creates large architectural forms and vigorous sonic structures and takes inspiration from non-European and indigenous musical forms. Involving live instruments, he often combines a prerecorded tape with brilliant improvisations by jazz musicians. His compositions include works for concert performance (some purely acousmatic, others employing live instruments), for cinema (music for Jean-Luc Godard, Serge Moati, Michel Deville, Michel Léviant and Alain Resnais amongst others), dance (for the choreographers Carolyn Carlson, Dominique and Françoise Dupuy and Serge Campardon) and equestrian theatre for the French horse trainer Bartabas. This 2CD collection contains selections from six compositions focusing on Schwarz's theatre and multimedia work. "Year of the Horse" (1978), "Still Waters" (1986) and "Undici Onde" (1978) contain pieces for choreographer and dancer Carolyn Carlson. With performances premiering at l'Opera de Paris, Teatre de Ville (Paris), and La Fenice in Venice, these scores give an in-depth insight into Schwarz and Carlson's collaborative process. Some scenes incorporate rhythmic or cyclical elements, field recordings, electronics, and others detail purely acoustic resonance. Each musical section relates closely with Carlson's expansive visual poetry. "L'Enfance De Vladimir Kobalt" (1979) was written for set designer and playwright Petrika Ionecso and "Maison Rouge" (1980) for director Pierre Sala. Both works evoke a wonderfully filmic structure, while integrating key themes across each scenic palette. The earliest work in the set is "Fotoband" (1974), a 21-minute composition to specifically accompany a 76-meter visual installation piece by German artist Ekkehart Raumstrausch. During the exhibition, loudspeakers were placed every 15 yards to allow the music to be heard while moving horizontally along the painting. All compositions were originally issued as small edition LP's on Schwarz's own Celia Records, except "Undici Onde" and "Fotoband" which are previously unpublished and available here for the first time. Presented with fully remastered audio. Includes a 12-page booklet of photos, visuals and detailed notes by the composer. Year of the Horse and other electroacoustic works 1974-1986 collects nearly two-and-a-half hours of highly evocative surroundings from this early visionary of electroacoustic composition.

Liner notes from Chris Sick: "I'm not sure what the first version of 'Fever' I ever heard (hopefully Elvis, probably Bon Jovi) but it has become engrained into my psyche. This song is covered scores of times a year and has become album filler for tired artists trying to find that last track before the hand in date. This belies the history of one of the most sultry songs ever written. A burning, intoxicating and poisonous feeling of yearning, lust and passion that is ageless and endless. Sexy just doesn't cover it. It smolders and breathes hot sweat on the back of your neck. For a crash course in 'Fever', check out the original Little Willie John and Peggy Lee, Elvis and the Cramps. Then listen to this... This collection tries to show the many diverse guises I have discovered lurking in the darkness. These are the versions overlooked, and often uncompiled till now. I hope this song infects you like it has me - But what a lovely way to burn..." Features: Bobby Freeman, Frankie Avalon, The Knockouts, Pete Bennett and the Embers, Little Caesar and the Romans, Ray Peterson, Sid Cooper, Sam Butera and the Witnesses, Earl Grant and Medicine Men.

KOVACS, KORNEL The Bells 2x12"
2x12" version. Gatefold sleeve. For the past seven years Kornél Kovács has been busy rocking dancefloors and boom-boxes worldwide as one third of Stockholm's Studio Barnhus alongside Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist. The label and DJ trio is spearheading a new era of fearless Swedish off-center dance music, straddling the line between cute and menacing. Anticipation for Kovács' debut album has been rocketing following stand out releases like 2014's wistful Szikra (BARN 022EP), last year's mad party anthem "Pantalón" on Glasgow's Numbers imprint and the late night groove of "Space Jam" on Smallville Records (SMALL 044EP, 2015). On The Bells, Kovács pops open his trunk full of sounds nicked from the lost and found bins of nightclubs all over the world. From the distorted organ chords of "BB" to the stripped down trance-hall beats of "Josey's Tune" and "Szív Utca" and the title track's cinematic romanticism, it's all of the bells and all of the whistles - further positioning Kornél Kovács as one of the most characteristic producers of modern house music. The record was completed in an intense two-week session with Kovács' great friend and great studio engineer Matt Karmil in the cold winter of 2016. Another close friend, artist Malin Gabriella Nordin, has created the album artwork together with her brother Jonas.

YOUR PLANET IS NEXT YPIN EP 12"
Our planet... is next!? Yes, this is in fact the case, at least according to Arvid Wretman. So yeah, wanna pop some pills? Or do you wanna chill? ...and do you, or not, believe in life after love? These and many other questions are posed, but never answered, on YPIN EP, the starting point of what hopefully will be a particularly lucrative business venture between those two powerhouses of Scandi-tronica, Your Planet Is Next and Studio Barnhus.

TREANOR, RIAN Pattern Damage 12"
Pattern Damage is the second flash of idiosyncratic footwork and garage hybrids from South Yorkshire's Rian Treanor. Pattern Damage finds Rian both opening out and refining his sound. The grimy noise torque of "Pattern A1", which sounds closest to SND or Errorsmith's most oblique twisters, before the dub chords and skittish rhythms of "Pattern A2" recall Autechre getting off at Niche Club and "Damage B1" comes off like a giddier, footworking answer to "Hyph Mngo" and "Damage B2" unfolds a super cute and tricky sort of syncopated rhythm origami.

ALLEN, LORI E Tears Of The Material Vulture Cassette
Lori E Allen is an unemployed prehistoric archaeologist from middle America, b. 1975, now living and working between London and Berlin as an experimental composer and video artist. In the early '90s while studying at New York University she met and began vaguely collaborating and cavorting with DJ Fat Pants, the obscure genome from which Madame Chaos was conceived. "Madame Chaos" was a public access television show, cablecast on Manhattan Neighborhood Network and Brooklyn Community Access Television in New York City from 1995 to 2005. Allen was involved until she was kicked out and describes the show, as it was seen on TV, as being "a re-digested type of media vomit which should comprise one the major vital food groups for growing children." Tears of the Material Vulture is a new composition which builds itself specifically upon three samples from two of Madame Chaos' early cassette releases, MC Sampler and Creeping Eskimo Chong, both dating from 1995, and resurrected here in memory of those creepy times. ZEITKRATZER Grand Orchestra CD
2013 release. Grand Orchestra, for mixed orchestra and bagpipes. Composed and directed by Reinhold Friedl. Performed by Zeitkratzer & guests at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin on August 21, 2011. "The score for Grand Orchestra has been developed for musicians, laymen, old people, children, adolescents, for anyone who likes to join in. Grand Orchestra is not for education. It's not about explaining, intellectual understanding or the training of cultural values; rather it's about having faith in the abilities and intuition of the players and their performance. The musicians of Zeitkratzer and additional guests took over the voice-leading of the instrumental groups, distributed in the space and enabling their amplification. In this way it was possible to create not only pure intensity but also dense and complex sound aggregates, through the blurring of playing techniques inside the different instrumental groups. Which orchestra is capable of playing such complex sounds as this group of forty wind players, chorally building a simultaneous crescendo of breaths? Who can play more ecstatically and wilder than a group of sixty musicians, playing against and doing their best to keep up with a Scottish bagpipe ensemble? It's precisely due to unclearly played single sounds, unfolding from an orchestra dominated by amateurs. Unique sounds with a complex character that no professional orchestra could reproduce." -- Reinhold Friedl, from the liner notes. Zeitkratzer is sound made visible, tangible, bodily and a truly unforgettable corporal experience of live music. The physicality of sound is celebrated through extended instrumental techniques, mutual understanding and amplification of traditional instruments. A midpoint between instrumental and electronic music turns out to be more bizarre and surprising than either of these. Zeitkratzer, founded in 1999, gathers nine musicians, light and sound engineers living in different European cities from Amsterdam to London to Oslo meeting for working phases in Berlin. They have performed critically acclaimed versions of classical music by composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann and James Tenney, as well as orchestral versions of electronic/noise music by Whitehouse, Merzbow, John Duncan, Dror Feiler and Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.

RATTLE Rattle CD
Nottingham based drumming duo Rattle preset their eponymous debut LP via Upset the Rhythm. Rattle focus almost exclusively on drums and more drums, beneath a delicate overlay of vocal harmonies and percussive effects. Formed by Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley, Rattle began as an experiment in crafting rich songs and melody using drums and voice alone. Their music weaves and intertwines post-punk, minimalism and experimental rock through off-kilter rhythms, patterns and counter melodies. The duo formed by accident in Nottingham in 2011, where Katharine and Theresa knew each other from playing in other local bands. Katharine was a guitarist who had recently started playing drums in the band Kogumaza and Theresa is the enthralling drummer from Fists. They originally met up to skill swap guitars and drums but soon enough they found they were having more fun with a double drum set-up and started making the sound of their first song "Boom", which became a blueprint for their new band's sound. As Katharine explains; "It seemed obvious right from the start that nothing else was going to be required in terms of instruments." When it came to recording the album it made absolute sense to bring in their regular live sound engineer Mark Spivey (also of Kogumaza) who has been working closely with the band from the beginning. Live, he adds additional effects and manipulations from the sound desk and these techniques were transferred over to a studio setting at The Big Mouse House, in Sneinton, Nottingham. A lot of time and attention was taken to get the best sound possible from the drums in the room. Having mostly played in experimental or avant-rock settings, Rattle first discovered that they could make their awkward audiences dance with opening track "Trainer (Get You)", which was specifically designed to make the listener move in some way. Other songs embrace different moods, for example "Starting" has a sense of urgency and a repeated lyric phrase that becomes a mantra, and "Click" is more soothing and meditative. The hi-hat and cymbal hits in "Sorcerer" have a sword-fighting feel and "Stringer Bell" is more of a cocktail song from a 1950s city apartment. Often starting by picking out the ghost notes from the drums to develop a melody, the song then reveals itself in rounds and harmonies with layer upon layer of rhythm and vocal, lending a choral feel to some of the tracks. Rattle effortlessly blend the avant-garde with irresistible melodies and hypnotic drum beats, using rhythm and harmony to create a refreshing sound that is utterly new.

HOOKER, D.R. The Truth CD
Genuine reissue of D.R. Hooker's The Truth (1972) from the original audio sources; new analog transfer with improved mastering. "It's a miracle any copies of this privately pressed album survived -- but be thankful it did, for here is an individual vision. Some people worry about when we'll run out of oil. A rather smaller proportion of us worry about when we'll run out of discoverable, deep-end thrills like this. There is just no way in the world items like Donald Hooker's 40-year-old privately pressed LP should even exist as a thing -- it more than likely only ran to about 99 copies in its original format, so how the hell did even one of those survive to create these new digital and analogue versions decades later? Connecticut-based Hooker -- a tall, slim hippy with a history of substance abuse -- was much given to wearing the sort of austere robe he sports on the sleeve, a fairly outré move even then. In early 1972 he hired a gang of local scene musicians to flesh out his wonderful songs and after a few brief rehearsals the band began recording. As soon as they were done they split -- some never even heard the finished album, and what a treat they missed. Hooker's arrangements are truly beautiful; a simple, swinging pop song like Weather Girl exists somewhere between the Doors and Curtis Mayfield, whereas The Bible ('If they're knocking the Bible, be sure they are bent/ Just see and you'll understand the book is heaven sent') has the propulsive drive of a pained George Harrison ballad crushed up against some of Neil Young's freeform, string-banging joy. Then there's The Sea, with its rolling religious allegories and the remarkable Free which marries a growling hard rock throb to a vampirically groovy synth line. Hooker's masterpiece is Forge Your Own Chains, which is part conga-led, lounge-funk soul and part, questing psychedelic dream. To think this entirely individual worldview would have once languished, unloved, in a series of under-the-racks cutout bins. And how much more magic like this is there out there?" --Rob Fitzpatrick, "The 101 strangest records on Spotify: DR Hooker -- The Truth," The Guardian, April 24, 2013

HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND Sharpener CD
On the back of two hugely successful albums and almost constant touring, Hackney Colliery Band's new album, Sharpener, shows the band in a more confident form than ever, with powerful new electronic elements and a dancefloor sensibility adding to the jazz, rock and soul for which they are known. Building on the strength of their critically-acclaimed original writing, Sharpener has a powerful set of originals at its core, alongside a trio of left-field covers in the shape of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box", Kwabs's "Wrong or Right" and Three Trapped Tigers's "Cramm". It's a record that resounds with humor, charm and the hum of the glorious variety of musical genres that emanate from their hometown. Album opener "Jump Then Run" echoes the sound of the legendary Moondog, while "Gather Your Wits" is a roof-raising rumble of brass and rebellious behavior. "Wrong or Right", a soulful version of London soul star Kwabs's great tune, comes to life with juicy menace before "The Morning", an uplifting anthemic arrangement, builds into joyous hedonism. "When You Know" gives space to the band's superb jazz chops, while album title track "Sharpener" is a big, bold, brassy and utterly mesmerizing affair. It's perhaps the band's outstanding arrangements which sets them apart. From the intricacies of "Timelapse" to the introspection of "Reawake", from the punky rock groove of "It's Normally Bigger" (based on a true story) to the rave jazz of "Bread and Circuses", the arrangements throughout showcase writers Olly Blackman, Luke Christie and Steve Pretty's contrasting styles, able to switch from screaming energy to moody introspection, from cutting-edge jazz to dancefloor rave, and proving that Hackney Colliery Band is not just another party brass band blowing through the usual pop covers. Alongside main stage sets at festivals like Field Day and Love Supreme and collaborations with Amy Winehouse, Fyfe Dangerfield, Eliza Doolittle, Jamie Cullum, Andreya Triana, Williams Fairey Band, Rhodes and DJ Yoda, they have performed live sessions on BBC Radio 2 and Jazz FM, and their performances have been featured on BBC Two, Sky Arts and live at the BRIT, Mercury and Mobo Awards. The Times has said that Hackney Colliery Band are "redefining the brass band format for the 21st century."

VA Randy's Studio 17 Sessions 1969-1976 CD
Voice Of Jamaica presents a compilation titled Randy's Studio 17 Sessions 1969-1976. In 1959, Vincent Chin opened a small record shop on the corner of East St. and Tower St, in downtown Kingston named after Randy's Records in Gallatin, Tennessee, an emporium where many of the Jamaican sound systems used to send their mail order records. Two years later, the shop moved to more spacious premises at 17 North Parade in the heart of Kingston's commercial district, where Randy's Record Mart rapidly established itself as Jamaica's leading retail and wholesale outlets. Vincent also produced records. Jamaica declared its independence in the summer of 1962 to the sound of Lord Creator's "Independent Jamaica" produced by Vincent and released on his Randy's Creative Calypso label. This is an exemplary selection of Bunny Striker Lee's recordings at Randy's Studio 17, compiled for this release. While some were recorded entirely, others are the products of Bunny's legendary mix and match approach with rhythm tracks laid at Randy's and the vocals done elsewhere. Features: Delroy Wilson, Pat Kelly, Bob Marley, Cornell Campbell, John Holt, Slim Smith, Owen Grey, Eric "Monty" Morris, Max Romeo, Johnny Clarke, Ronnie Davis, Doreen Schaeffer and Freddie McGregor. CD version includes two bonus tracks from The Clarendonians and Cornell Campbell.
