ZORN, JOHN Naked City LP
"Regularly hailed as one the most important composers of the late 20th century, John Zorn is comfortable at the helm of an ensemble, as improviser on an array of instruments, and as a bold theorist of collaboration. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the New York artist and operator of the esteemed Tzadik label became known for assembling hardcore-inflected jazz ensembles and for devising 'game systems,' or intricate musical conditions intended to force players into new territory. Released in 1990 on Nonesuch, Naked City bears a stark cover photograph by Weegee -- noted for his unsparing images of New York crime scenes -- and features one of the more staggering 'rock' lineups ever assembled: Zorn on alto saxophone, guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Fred Frith, drummer Joey Baron, keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, and vocalist Yamatsuka Eye. Naked City is a maelstrom of styles, veering recklessly between country, noise, New Orleans R&B, polka, and grindcore, with overtures from detective shows and film noir. In other words, it's a daring maelstrom of American musical vernacular. It also explodes the rock format's supposed limitation and retains a wildly intersectional listenership: devotees of punk, free jazz, and harsh noise celebrate Naked City. In short, as one writer put it, Naked City remains a 'pinnacle of avant coolness.'"

7TH PLAIN, THE Chronicles I 2LP
Double LP version. Includes download code. A-TON is a new edition and platform of Berghain's in-house imprint Ostgut Ton, focusing on ambient, archive and alternative music, differing from the club-focused records on the main label. Chronicles I marks the start of a series from Luke Slater's The 7th Plain moniker, with remastered, previously released and unheard archive material. First published on General Production Recordings between 1993 and 1996, Slater's The 7th Plain pushed the further burgeoning genre of ambient music towards its boundaries by not limiting itself to mostly beat-less synth pads, but by including propulsive beat progressions, nuanced rhythms and subtle melodies. Luke Slater pioneered the UK's electronic landscape as Translucent, 4 Slots For Bill, Planetary Assault Systems, The 7th Plain, Clementine, and later as L.B. Dub Corp, by partly focusing on, partly bypassing the traditional, puristic values of techno. The 7th Plain's extra-mundane music dodged classification, as heard on the albums The 4 Cornered Room (1994) and My Yellow Wise Rug (1994) - emotional, eerie and escapist music, at the time of release forward thinking records that in retrospect managed to overcome time. Originally recorded at Slater's Spacestation Ø, now all newly mastered for A-TON, Chronicles I depicts the futurist aesthetic and musical agenda of the '90s in a contemporary context, without nostalgia but confidence of its timelessness. With seven original musical pieces and a previously unreleased Ken Ishii remix, The 7th Plain sounds as spirited and relevant as ever. While "Boundaries" (taken from My Yellow Wise Rug), "Grace" and "Surface Bound" (from The 4 Cornered Room) should be familiar to Slater aficionados, "The Super 8", "T Funk States", "Slip 7 Sideways" and "Chords Are Dirty" are previously unheard like the aforementioned remix of Ishii's "Extra". Chronicles I sees The 7th Plain expand the warmth and bleakness of analog synthesizer music to the digital age.

SMOKE CLEARS, THE The Smoke Clears LP
Includes download code. The Smoke Clears is the abstract ambient project of producer John Daly (One Track Records/ Secretsundaze). He debuted this alias with Listen (FUR 080CD/LP) in 2013 on Further Records. Following up Listen, The Smoke Clears builds upon it's predecessor's ambient abstractions while adding another layer of nuanced melodic contemplation. The album kicks off with "Fathoms", a deceptively calm track but with a paced sense of urgency which is evident throughout the LP, belying its calm undertones. Continuing at this pace for the rest of the first side the LP takes a side turn with the lush "Slipstream" melting into the only vocal track of the album - the dubbed out bliss of "Oh My Days" featuring Cian Finn. Showcasing a side that might not be familiar to those who come to the table with knowledge of the Galway producers house and techno releases on his own imprint One Track Records as well as Running Back and more, this is lush downtempo machine music equally as at home cranked up one louder sound system style, or for late night home listening.

KLEIN, NICK The Lonesome Dealer 12"
Four disparate, industrial-tinged tracks that demonstrate a rough-hewn synthesis of noise and techno. From the hypnotic "Caberet Voltaire gone Reggaeton" patter of "Chats With Lucy" to the crawling computer acid of "Christian Rock Concert", Nick Klein teases out melodies from beneath layers of muddied beats on The Lonesome Dealer, a record that is as pacifying as it is jarring. "Do You Want To Crash?" is perhaps the clearest realization of this idea; its crescendoing din of noise giving way to a laser-cut synth line, while "Pain Management Resource" is built around a clatter of hi-hats and wobbly polyrhythms.

MISS NELSON & BRUCE HAACK Dance Sing And Listen LP
LP version. Aurora Rising present a reissue of Miss Nelson & Bruce Haack's Dance Sing And Listen, originally released in 1963. This album is somewhat of a curiosity for it was actually conceived as an educational, open-minded children's music. The sound is a mash up of story-telling for kids and simple, happy sing-along music mixed with loads of electronic effects making it an utterly spacey affair. This reissue makes sure this cult album can be enjoyed by people crazy for early '60s electronic music. Let go of all spiritual chains and float away with the tape looped rhythms and all the hissing and buzzing and chirping upon which Esther Nelson, actually a children's dance teacher, and Bruce Haack, a composer and pioneer of electronic music, recite poems, give dance instructions or play melodies on primitive synthesizers. Dance Sing And Listen is meant to fire the imagination of children and due to its musical quality and weird mood, it may do the same with adults. From this pioneering piece came the sound bands like Kraftwerk and Neu! would head for about ten years later. Enjoyable children's music that's far out enough to make souls travel.

HENRY, MICHEL VITOLD & SILVIA MONFORT, PIERRE L'Occident Est Bleu/L'An Cinquante-Six LP
Aurora Rising present the first vinyl reissue of L'Occident Est Bleu/L'An Cinquante-Six, originally released in 1958. Pierre Henry is most popular among rock fans for his collaboration with the English band Spooky Tooth in 1969 but he already had a great reputation as a composer and performer in the field of modern classics, musique concrète and pioneering electronic avant-garde. So it is obvious that there have been quite a few albums by him and in cooperation with other artists not necessarily from the field of music. L'Occident Est Bleu/L'An Cinquante-Six features sound contributions by Pierre Henry, and spoken word performances by popular French actors Michel Vitold and Silvia Montfort based on two texts by fellow actor and singer Claude Pascal. It can be seen as an audio book rather than a regular music record backed with sounds. All the texts are performed in French and they focus on dark themes. The musical part of this album is also quite intense with a haunting atmosphere, droning and disturbing at times. The drone and musique concrète aspects show the roots of what should become cosmic music in the late '60s and early '70s performed mostly by artists such as Tangerine Dream. And indeed there are a few moments here that remind me of the classic Zeit (1972) by Edgar Froese and his mates. A sound experiment, a twisted and creepy manifestation of weird thoughts in something that is loosely connected to music. A challenge for sure, but if you love the obscure and have a heart for avant garde music you are welcome to this first ever reissue of a long time vanished record. Includes two bonus tracks.

LUENING/USSACHEVSKY/BERGSMA A Poem In Cycles And Bells & Other Music For Tape Recorder LP
Aurora Rising present a reissue of A Poem In Cycles And Bells & Other Music For Tape Recorder, originally released in 1957. This record is a relic of electronic music that happened before anybody even spoke about rock music. In 1957, this compilation of electronic and orchestral compositions by the three masterminds Otto Luening, Vladimir Ussachevsky and William Bergsma saw the light of the stars for the first time and has become a cult piece among lovers of electronic space music since then, despite the fact that only the first side features the so called tape compositions of Luening and Ussachevsky from the '50s while Bergsma's lengthy piece from the B side gets performed by a regular orchestra consisting of living beings. Lay back and drift away upon this stream of sound, a very human effort all-in-all. All instruments are real and even though this piece of music moves within the narrow borderlines of classic orchestral music patterns, there is a warm and gentle flow of energy pouring out of it and reaching out. Luening and Ussachevsky, on the other hand, work with sounds of undefined origin recorded on tape reels which are their main instruments, creating something new out of everything. The result is dark and gloomy. It pulls the listener away from an earthly existence and drags them out into space, to the furthest corners of the cosmos. This is the right music for all lovers of spaced out sounds from the days before the synthesizer. For lovers of all the late '60s and '70s stuff like early Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Organisation and Cluster. These compositions, are on par with all the newer and now legendary cosmic music acts but created ten to twenty years prior. This long out of print gem is one of the important steps towards every kind of electronic music that was successful ever since.

WEAVER, JANE The Watchbird Alluminate CD
2011 release. Remaining faithful to her influences of Germanic märchen tales, Eastern European children's cinema and mechanical pop music, Jane Weaver expands her critically acclaimed Fallen By Watchbird (BMS 022CD, 2010) concept album with The Watchbird Alluminate, a ten chapter sequel-of-sorts, by employing a cast of new actors and narrators to reinterpret her surreal "cosmic aquatic folklore" twelve months after the first installment. Here, Jane experiments with volks-music in its purest, most innocent form using modern tools to retell and recycle second hand stories. Inspired by post-war cinematic interpretations and hand-me-down mistranslations of global folk tales Jane has collaborated with a close-knit group of musicians, noisemakers and vocalists/narrators to create automatic-music and re-illuminate an eleven-page novella about telepathy, technology, lost-love, wiccan, war and watchbirds. As part of ongoing voice and electronic experiments with the people behind Pre-Cert Records The Watchbird Alluminate includes a wordless vocal introduction and interlude from both Demdike Stare and the elusive Anworth Kirk while the spoken-word narrative of Finders Keepers' lost American pop folk singer Susan Christie is reinterpreted by Ghostbox's Focus Group with results comparable to Ruth White's 1968 electronic/vox interpretations of Baudelaire's Flowers Of Evil (1857). Jane's own Bird Records label roster contributes two new cover versions of Weaver's self-penned tracks re-sung by Italian singer Emma Tricca and Rochdale's time-slipped falsetto soloist Magpahi (in a track evokes cinematic scenes from Night Of The Hunter (1955) or The Innocents (1961)). Elsewhere vintage soft-pop royalty appears in the form of a lead vocal from Wendy & Bonnie's, Wendy Flower, a close friend and confidant of Jane's since their first collaborations in New York and London in 2006 at the request of Jarvis Cocker for his guest curation at the Meltdown festival. Other lead performances from Weaver add a new poetic twist to the story in both solo capacity and alongside Samandtheplants' Sam McLoughlin whose Supernatural Lancashire library project (with Alison Cooper) from 2010 still resonates as one of the finest releases of 2010. With a unique approach to making non-linear mechanical music this pop-up collective adds a further creative perspective to the oft mistreated "concept album" virtually eliminating genre distinction in favor of communal noise - a unique product of genuinely independent music in 2011 which continues to sprout further branches.

3/4HADBEENELIMINATED Speak To Me LP
Black Truffle present Speak To Me, the sixth full-length release from 3/4HadBeenEliminated, the Italian trio of Stefano Pilia, Claudio Rocchetti and Valerio Tricoli. Based on source material recorded in Bologna and Berlin over the course of several years, the album is made up of two side-long pieces meticulously constructed in post-production by Tricoli in his singularly dense and unpredictable style. Although their live performances have always been entirely improvised, in their recorded work the group focuses on using improvised recordings as source material for compositions built up through layering, editing and analog manipulation, extending the practices of Teo Macero, Faust and This Heat. Melancholic instrumental ruminations sit alongside cracked electronics, concrete sounds and Tricoli's whispered vocals, drawn together into dense assemblages animated by gradual transformations and sudden jump cuts. Beginning from the abstractions of their self-titled debut release in 2004, the group embarked on a trajectory that saw them move toward near-song structures, Tricoli's voice becoming a dominant element amid an increasingly dense and layered production style. On Speak To Me, however, the listener feels confronted by the ghost of music, sonic memories echoing across a psychedelic expanse. Evacuated of any clear structure, the music becomes a reverb-saturated morass, from which crystalline details momentarily emerge: shimmering echoed guitar, bowed double bass, tactile hand percussion, skittering electronics. Suffused with a darkly pensive atmosphere, Speak To Me is an elegant summation of the distinctive blend of electroacoustic techniques, instrumental improvisation and contemporary psychedelia pioneered by 3/4HadBeenEliminated over the last decade. LP design by Stephen O'Malley with striking artwork by Stefano Pilia. Vinyl cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

TOMORROW THE RAIN WILL FALL UPWARDS Wreck His Days LP
Includes MP3/FLAC download code. Wreck His Days is dubbed-out cosmic pastorals and politically exasperated techno-exotica from Blackest Ever Black's most secretive and shape-shifting project, Tomorrow The Rain Will Fall Upwards. Guest contributors include Conrad and Jonnine Standish of HTRK, Genevieve McGuckin (These Immortal Souls), and Lucas Santanna. The ghosts of Les Baxter, Rowland S. Howard and Nina Simone are also in attendance. But whoever is pulling the strings remains hidden. Structurally Wreck His Days recalls the grand collective statements of This Mortal Coil or Massive Attack, but musically its dreamlike overtures have more in common with Deux Filles, Global Communication, Arthur Russell or Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It roams far and wide: from near-Balearic piano loops of the title track, to the Audrey Horne-worthy death-jazz of "Ghost From The Coast" and the hulking, bass-heavy soundsystem weapon "Reverberasia". The swelling, uplifting astral psychedelia of "...And I Tried So Hard", while "I Beat As I Sleep As I Dream" reprises the bleak existential synth drift of T.T.R.W.F.U.'s extraordinary 2014 10", How Great A Fame Has Departed. A deep-seated socialist impulse drives the whole thing.

BUNDT, MICHAEL Electri City LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Michael Bundt's Electri City, originally released in 1980. Having played his way through the 1970s in various rock combos (Medusa, Nine Days' Wonder), Michael Bundt embarked on a solo career in the latter part of the decade, releasing three albums which saw him explore the vast potential of electronic music. Delightfully varied and typical of his willingness to experiment, his music orbits around krautrock, Berlin School electronica, space-futurism and synth pop. Electri City, his last album, was created in Bundt's own studio using a PPG synthesizer and a Teac four-track tape recorder. He worked on the mixes with a Revox tape machine, cutting and splicing by hand. Whereas he had enlisted guest musicians on the predecessor Neon (1979), this time around he did everything himself, except for two tracks which featured keyboarder Steve Robison (Reiner Geyer) who had played with Bundt in the krautrock band Nine Days' Wonder. The resulting LP is replete with experimental electronic music, psychedelic in places. Music which leaves the Krautrock of Neon far behind. Electri City is like a science fiction story: inquisitive, playful, energetic, willing to take the fantastic on board. Step sequencer miniatures flow easily through the music as it conjures up electrifying escapades of synth FX and distorted field recording fragments, laced with melodies heavy on portamento - all coming together in a complex, expressive musical structure that would not be out of place in a Captain Future film. Michael Bundt dedicated Electri City to the fictitious character Kilgore Trout who was created by the author Kurt Vonnegut. Trout appears in a number of Vonnegut's novels, usually described as an unsuccessful science fiction writer whose stories at best make it into pulp fiction comic books or the pages of men's magazines. Synthesizer music at that time was generally considered suspect, purportedly trivial, in contrast to the pure playing techniques so freely exhibited in progressive rock. Perhaps Bundt felt that this mirrored the fate of Trout's eminently readable works, Vonnegut's intradiegetic stories. But Michael Bundt was not going on the defensive with Electri City having already offered proof enough of his virtuosity. Michael Bundt cast aside his instruments and stepped away from krautrock, purposefully striving for a purely synthetic analog sound.

DENNY, MARTIN Exotica LP
Captain High Records present Martin Denny's Exotica, originally released in 1957. This album, at hand by prolific legend Martin Denny, is the one which gave a name to an entire genre of exotica. The songs on Exotica are all outstanding. Based on jazz and folk this is an early example of mind-altering music, because the album sets a dreamy state with haunting melodies and sound effects that are reminiscent of wild animals in the jungle. The rhythmical base is rooted in Latin music, from mambo via samba to bossa nova, all the Latin American forms of dance music are combined with bebop elements. Asian percussion instruments and harmonies also find their way onto this album. There are colorful tunes that recall Japanese folk but with a closer listen, the melodies would fit well with US western movie soundtracks. The easy listening sound of the '50s comes as the last ingredient and the icing on the cake. Also, the "space age" movement was happening with an equally dreamy style but more science fiction oriented direction. A few of these pulsating electronic influences did pass by composer and conductor Martin Denny while creating this masterpiece, so the listener might feel like flying away from time to time, but the journey always ends on a beautiful island in the South Pacific ocean where pretty girls and boys dance to hot blooded savage rhythms. This savage soul burns deep within the music on Exotica. This is the ticket to a destination beneath the palm trees.

VA Katanga! Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 1 & 2 LP
LP version. Katanga! Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 1 & 2 combines the first two volumes from the Exotic Blues & Rhythm compilation series named Katanga! (2013) and Ahbe Casabe! (2013) with two additional bonus tracks (CD only). This album is a colorful garden of delights consisting of R'n'B and rock'n'roll based songs from the 1940s to the early 1960s that all have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation. Eddie Cole & Three Peppers with their hypnotizing groover "Police" for example present a Caribbean mento with a mambo and rhythm'n'blues feel. This piece finds its roots in the late 1940s and demonstrates how far even the predecessors of rock music already got in their development. It is only one out of 26 rare gems. The collection starts with the recognizable, gloomy bluesy tune named "Green Onions" played the Claus Ogermann Orchestra. The Ahbe Casabe portion is where the strange and quirky charm of exotica music captures souls even more. The title track for example is a song from the late '50s written by proto hippie Ehden Ahbez and combines a Latin groove with a vocal melody speaking of dark backstreets in oriental cities. The backing vocal effects here are more than strange somewhere between a deep gnarling and chipmunk-style squeaking while the lead vocals on the other hand are soulful and striking as expected. Kip Tyler's "Shadow Street" leaves the listener somewhere in between the jungle and a haunted oriental café in a town near the desert plains of Egypt. Next to master Ike Turner & His Kings Of Rhythm with his exotic surf instrumental "Katanga" from the first part, good old rock'n'roll pioneer Bill Haley And His Comets should be the most famous contributor to this musical treasure chest. A nice little oddity bonus track is "The Riddle Of The Papawhos" by Danny Staton, based on old spirituals and gospels with a 1950s pop music base. The other bonus track by Elena Madera named "Pu-Chun-Ga", is another outstanding mad Latin tune with wild female vocals. Also features: Artie Barsamin & Orchestra, Prince Conley, Joe Valino, Chance Halladay, The Chiefs, Jimmy Rushing, Sonny Til And The Orioles, Emmet Davis, Classie Ballou, Jack La Forge, Marti Barris, Steve Arlen, Bruce Cloud, Dickie Thompson, Rene Hall And His Band, Machito And His Orchestra, Mamie Perry, Lord Kitchener and Jamie Coe.

SHANGO DANCE BAND Shango Dance Band LP + 7"
LP version. Includes 7". "In the early years of Fela Kuti's career, well before he would define the genre of Afro-beat, and leave an indelible mark on the musical landscape, he was a struggling trumpet player, seeking to redefine the sound of his current group, the art-jazz ensemble Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet. As he moved his group towards the then-popular genre of highlife in 1963, he lost his bassist in the move towards commercial success, but gained the company of Ojo Okeji, who had a sterling reputation both as a bassist and percussionist in groups like Lagos Cool Cats, Rex Williams' Nigerian Artistes, and Western Toppers Highlife Band, a favorite of Kuti's. Okeji impressed Kuti with his deft jazziness on the bass, so he was in on the spot, and the Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet became Koola Lobitos. It was Okeji that introduced Kuti to the famed percussionist Tony Allen, (Who would subsequently join Kuti into his greatest years as an artist) as well as conguero Abayomi 'Easy' Adio. During his time in Koola Lobitos, Okeji not only contributed deeply melodic, and adeptly rhythmic baselines, but brought his own influence from emerging US soul artists like James Brown & The Famous Flames and Wilson Pickett, heavily pushing Koola Lobitos towards a more soulful direction. This push was often resisted by Kuti, who frequently clashed with Okeji. 1968 proved to be a turning point for the group, as the Nigerian Civil War broke out, and many starving musicians turned to the military for work. Okeji and Adio would leave for the army, while Kuti and Allen kept Koola Lobitos going, where it evolved through different names and iterations and grew into the worldwide Afro-beat force that made Kuti an icon during the '70s and '80s. But as Kuti and Allen rose to global recognition, Okeji and Adio would form a new band within the ranks of the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Their emblazoned blue jackets earned them the nickname 'The Blues', but Okeji preferred the name 'Shango' after the Yoruba thunder god. Shango took the fundamentals of Kuti's famous Afro-beat and brought new layers of guitar and horn arrangements, while often invoking supernatural aesthetics, and maintaining a love for the US soul artists that influenced Okeji so much. Because Shango was an army band however, their records were not readily available to anyone outside of the military so their music, including their eponymous 1974 LP, remained relatively unknown even amongst the people of Nigeria. Decades later Comb & Razor is thrilled to present this long-lost Nigerian gem for the first time to a world-wide audience."

As Magna Pia, he introduces his own very personal image of techno - rich, textural and full of detail. Characterized by the kind of programming and nuances that only experienced, musically-trained producers are capable of, it offers a strong narrative throughout - from the low slung melodic churn of opening track "Dhul" to the mutant acid of "Nyx" at its epitaph. Over four tracks with four very different moods, Incantations is a masterclass in hardware only, high-end electronics - weird, melodic, hypnotic, banging.

The grand, ceremonious intro to square-wave grime flip, "Mercurial", is also a highlight, while title-track, "Flight" - a dreamy, washed out, beat-tape cut - again sees Spokes explore new dynamics to his sound. SOLOMUN Selected Remixes 2009-2015 4LP BOX
Four-LP box version. Includes download code. Melodic house pioneer and Diynamic figurehead Solomun presents Selected Remixes 2009 - 2015, a compilation of some of his best-loved remixes from 2009 to 2015. Solomun's Selected Remixes 2009 - 2015 is a great overview of the multiple facets of his unique yet ever evolving production style. Hailing from Hamburg, he founded Diynamic in his hometown back in 2006. His unique style as a producer and DJ means he is widely revered by critics and fans alike, remaining in the top 26 and above in the coveted Resident Advisor top 100 DJs poll for the past five years, as well as hitting #4 in the site's most charted producers of 2011. Comprised of twenty-four tracks. Comes with customizable cover artwork and a pack of crayons, reflecting the "remix" concept. The first half displays Solomun's skill for crafting intelligent yet cross-over-ready reworks of both well-known and underground songs. Amongst these are some of the producer's most iconic tracks to date; the Solomun Vox Mix of Noir & Haze's "Around" , as well as his remix of "Let's Go Back feat. Romanthony" by Kraak & Smaak. His remix of Foals "Late Night" from 2013 also features, which, alongside "Around", has racked up over 30 million views on Youtube. Other offerings range from atmospheric takes on the likes of Lana Del Rey and Roisin Murphy, to the more deep and downbeat remix of Whilk & Misky's "Clap Your Hands". The largely vocal-less remixes on the second half allow Solomun's unique production style to shine through. The dark beats of his remix of Stimming's "Una Pena feat. Paulo Olarte" makes for an attention-grabbing start to the disc, whereas his dub mix of "A Love Bizarre" by So Phat! and Claude VonStroke's "The Clapping Track" shows his funkier side. Older remixes like that of "Magnetic North" by Palm Skin Productions and Marbert Rocel's "Cornflake Boy" prove Solomun's credentials with a traditional jacking house groove, underlined by those same distinctive lush basslines and melodic elements. Tiga & Audion's famous "Let's Go Dancing" draws the compilation to a close, demonstrating Solomun's skill for bringing an entirely new dimension to an already very well-known track. Also features remixes of songs by: Broken Bells, Ron Carroll & Superfunk, Tiefschwarz feat. Mama, Editors, Paul Kalkbrenner, Liu Bei, Luca C & Brigante, Josef Salvat, Edu Imbernon & Los Suruba, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Elekfantz, Tiger Stripes and Gunnar Stiller.

BRINKMANN, THOMAS A 1000 Keys 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. "How many can get a personal sound out of a fucking piano?!" - Lee Konitz. Thomas Brinkmann takes his seductive reductionism to the next level with A 1000 Keys, a harsh meditation on the expressive qualities of digital sound production. In translating the timbre of a grand piano into binary codes, thus rebuilding its corpus with "0 and 1s", Brinkmann subverts the sensual qualities of this proto-romantic instrument in a sardonic way. Replacing the musician with a mathematically precise series of frenetic repetition and intriguingly dissonant difference, the result sounds at times like a violent ride through the brains of Schönberg or Webern, drained in amphetamines, at others like Feldman's ephemeral sketches or Russolo's futurist outburst. Brinkmann's conceptual framework is resonating in the track titles. Using shortcuts of international airports, he refers to non-places that establish their own space-and-time continuum, while lacking individual identity and history. These functional scenarios are sterile passages for anonymous, objectified masses, at the same time there's hardly a better place to grasp the very subjective character of time. A 1000 Keys is a fatal homage to minimalism and a consequent denial of virtuosity and the idea of creative genius. Paraphrasing the romantic idea of human perfection, Brinkmann found a way to create sonic algorithms of tenderness and brutality, establishing dramatic expressiveness in his constructivist analytics. The result is of radical beauty. Dedicated to Conlon Nancarrow.

VANNIER, JEAN-CLAUDE Electro Rapide CD
2011 release. For their 50th release, Finders Keepers Record's label heads Andy Votel, Dom Thomas and Doug Shipton return to their first release L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches by Jean-Claude Vannier released by Finders Keepers in 2005 (BMS 001CD/ FKR 001X-LP), with a long overdue return to Jean-Claude Vannier's vaults! Electro Rapide is a collection of rare and unreleased archive material from the studio archives of legendary French orchestral pop composer Jean-Claude Vannier. Taken from the period before and during his revered creative relationship with Serge Gainsbourg (reaching their halcyon with 1971's Histoire De Melody Nelson) these tracks reveal a rare glimpse of Vannier's self-initiated instrumental projects that were crowbarred between an airtight studio diary as one of France's most in demand arrangers and composers of the post Mai-68 generation. Alongside a handful of his contemporaries and collaborators such as Michel Colombier, Serge Gainsbourg, François de Roubaix, Brigitte Fontaine, Claude Nougaro and Gerard Manset, composer and orchestral arranger Jean-Claude Vannier is globally recognized as one of the key exponents of the Gallic pop cognoscenti to make the significant change from '60s yé-yé to the brooding conceptual pop which defined the following decade. His own masterworks, Histoire De Melody Nelson and L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches (both of which benefited from the poetic prose of Serge Gainsbourg), are two such productions that continue to inspire and challenge popular music as long as five decades since they were first released to moderate audiences in the early 1970s. Electro Rapide is a collection of similarly underexposed instrumental works that combine a mixture of Jean-Claude Vannier's familiar trademark motifs and stylings from his coveted work for idiosyncratic French pop vocalists (such as Fontaine, Nougaro, Leonie and Anna St. Clair) with the seldom heard experimental music for ballets, fashion shows as well as his infamous film music (such as the soundtracks for Cannabis (1970) and La Horse (1970)).

KORZYNSKI, ANDRZEJ Possession LP
2016 repress. Finders Keepers Records presents Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski's previously unreleased electro/orchestral/experimental score for Andrzej Zulawski's surrealist 1981 horror classic, Possession. These 25 cues were written and recorded exclusively for the 1981 award-winning film starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil, but due to the progressive, stark and modernist nature of the finished film, less than half of them made it on to the actual director's cut - leaving many of the tracks on this package totally unheard outside of Korzynski's studio. The intended Possession score in its entirety marks an important axis in Korzynski's career where his various musical disciplines overlap. In one respect it marks his first forays into to synth-driven electronics and disco drum machines, while other tracks epitomize the well-honed techniques used in previous Zulawski scores, such as Third Part Of The Night (1971) and The Devil (1972), which rely on his inimitable orchestral arrangements and combination of clavinet, Rhodes, piano and electric guitar. This is the first time any of this music has been released outside of the film's original context and is packaged on CD, vinyl and conceptual green compact cassettes housed in miniature clamshell cases reminiscent of the film's original VHS release that briefly adorned UK video shops in the early 1980s (before being banned by over excited censors as one of the unproscecuted "video nasties" in the infamous 1983 tape cull). The important restoration of Korzynski's music aims to shed new light on the seldom manufactured productions of the composer whose vast cinematic catalogue warrants overdue global status alongside other golden era Eastern European composers such as Kryzstof Komeda, Jan Hammer and Zdenek Liska - not to mention the best of the French and Italian soundtrackers, such as Roubaix, Vannier and Nicolai. Duplicated and carefully remastered directly from Korzynski's original master tapes this album boasts the uninhibited studio experiments and retains the pre-cut ambience. "Best soundtrack of 2012. 5/5" -- MOJO.

SATO, MASAHIKO Belladonna LP
2016 repress. "There was a time when the strength of a musician's vision transcended all labels; here is a chance to dip into that pool again, and emerge not just refreshed, but alive again with the sense that we all can live in that world again, but most importantly raise the flag for excellence. Fantastic." --Jim O'RourkeAn unholy grail of near-mythical status is finally now available in the form of this first-ever reissue. Masahiko Sato composed this elusive, sensual, psychedelic free jazz score for the stunning 1973 Japanese witchcraft animation Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna) directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Since the mid-2000s, Belladonna of Sadness has risen from the ashes and now shines brighter than ever. Now, on the eve of its third or fourth global DVD release in 2015, fans no longer have to settle for third-generation VHS telecine dubs or stuff their wish-lists into the hands of lucky friends visiting Tokyo. Belladonna has been used as nightclub projections by clued-up VJs and been restored by discerning feminist folk singers and improv bands while influencing illustrators, fashion designers, and other creative types along the way. Original copies of the soundtrack, however, are much less likely to rear their heads, with prices literally doubling each time the original stock copies swap hands among the same Italian dealers at central European record fairs. Italian soundtracks are expensive anyway, but this one, originally released by the Italian Cinevox label in 1975, has extra credentials. Finders Keepers Records and Sato himself agreed that this record should finally be liberated among those who know the magic words. With the decision to keep this album "strictly Sato," a track from the original release has been removed -- the main orchestral love theme by Asei Kobayashi and Mayumi Tachibana -- which in all honesty is very much detached from Sato's psychedelic soundtrack. Kept intact, however, are the songs sung and penned by Sato's wife at the time, Chinatsu Nakayama, including the track titled "TBFS," which only appears on the master tapes and never actually made it onto the theatrical cut of the film (though the theme is briefly alluded to, with different instrumentation, in a cut-scene available on the German DVD release). This reissue project also marks the beginning of a longer intended relationship between Finders Keepers and Masahiko Sato, exploring his recorded work in film music, jazz, and avant-garde composition.

CIANI, SUZANNE Buchla Concerts 1975 LP
Repressed. The lost synth manifesto that could have changed the course of electronic music history by the first lady of modular synth history, Suzanne Ciani. Buchla Concerts 1975 is an archival project that not only redefines musical history but boasts genuine claim to such overused buzzwords as pioneering, maverick, experimental, groundbreaking, and esoteric, while questioning social politics and the evolution of music technology as we've come to understand it. To describe this record as a game-changer is an understatement. This record represents a musical revolution, a scientific benchmark, and a trophy in the cabinet of counterculture creativity. This record is a triumphant yardstick in the synthesizer space race and the untold story of the first woman on the proverbial moon. While pondering the early accolades of this record it's daunting to learn that this record was in fact not a record at all . . . it was a manifesto and a gateway to a new world that somehow never quite opened. In 1975, Suzanne Ciani was a 29-year-old employee of the Buchla modular synthesizer company, San Francisco's neck-and-neck contender with New York's Moog. If the unfamiliar, modernistic, melodic pulses, tones, and harmonics found on this 1975 live presentation/grant application/educational demonstration had been placed in a phonographic context, they would have provided nothing short of an entirely different, feminine take on the experimental records of Morton Subotnick and proved to a small, judgmental audience and jury the true versatility of one of the most radical and idiosyncratic musical instruments of the 20th century. In denouncing her own precocious, polymathematic past in a bid to persuade the world to sing from a new hymn sheet, Suzanne Ciani created a byproduct of never-before-heard music that would render the pigeonholes "ambient" and "futuristic" utterly inadequate. These recordings have not been heard since then. Needless to say, this record, finally commanding the archival format of choice, was not the last "first" that this hugely important composer would gift to society and the future, in a wide range of exciting, evolving creative disciplines in the worlds of synth design, advertising, and film composition. You have found a holy grail of electronic music and a female musical pioneer who was too proactive to take the trophies. You can't write history when you are too busy making it. With fresh ink in the bottomless well, let's start at the beginning. Again. You are invited.

WATERS, MUDDY After The Rain LP
2016 repress. "The second of two electric-blues albums released on Chess Records and Cadet Concept imprint in the late '60s, Muddy Waters' After the Rain has achieved cult-like status amongst blues fans in the years since his death in 1983. After taking a backlash from critics with first attempt at adopting psychedelic influences on Electric Mud, Muddy made adjustments for the follow-up, despite keeping a majority of the same session players. This time, he toned down the psychedelic elements and put them in balance with his classic Chicago blues sound, and the results yield some vintage tracks that glow with fuzzy guitars and bass: 'I Am the Blues,' 'Ramblin' Mind,' 'Bottom of the Sea,' and 'Blues Trouble.' After being out of print for years, Get On Down is proud to present this rare classic from Muddy Waters pulled from the original masters and presented on LP with Japanese-style OBI and double-sided poster."

SHIELD PATTERNS Mirror Breathing LP
LP version. Includes download code. Manchester-based duo Shield Patterns return with Mirror Breathing. Released on band member Richard Knox's own Gizeh Records label, Mirror Breathing follows on from the critically acclaimed debut album Contour Lines (GZH 055CD/LP, 2014) and Violet EP (GZH 060CD, 2015). Where its predecessors took a more stark, electronic and processed approach, Mirror Breathing is an altogether warmer, more cinematic record. The cello of guest collaborator Julia Kent (Antony & The Johnsons, The Leaf Label) introduces a new element and a new energy to the sound, pulling the songs into a more symphonic form. The electronics, drones and field recordings are intricately and painstakingly arranged by the duo, meandering between haunting vocal passages, clarinet swells and delicate synth phrases. The album ebbs and flows through hypnotic beats ("Dusk", "Blue Shutters", "Glow"), ethereal and tender piano-led songs ("Bruises", "Anymore") to more aggressive, heavily experimental, free-jazz elements ("Balance & Scatter"). Continuing the fiercely DIY ethos adopted by both band and label, Mirror Breathing has been written, recorded and produced in its entirety by Claire Brentnall and Knox in their home studio in the Peak District. The record is both personal and universal; an exploration in sound and songwriting. The music Shield Patterns are making is difficult to place into genres or pigeon-holes. Experimental sounds are married to striking, inventive melodies throughout; it's contemporary pop music of sorts with a richly detailed cosmic edge. Some words from Claire about the album: "The album for me is about feeling connected; exploring what it means to be a friend, to be in love, to be an individual, to be part of a collective unconscious. It's about the beauty of imperfection, of making mistakes, and the discoveries that are made by chance as we learn to exist."

WATSON, JOHNNY The Blues Soul Of Johnny (Guitar) Watson LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of the second album by Johnny Watson, The Blues Soul Of Johnny (Guitar) Watson, originally released on Chess in 1963. Johnny was already a well-praised musician in the field of jazz, rhythm & blues and a popular sidekick for early rock'n'roll heroes such as Little Richard when he recorded this beautiful album. Despite the title of the album, it mostly contains a swinging and accessible vocal jazz with an irresistible groove and instrumental passages. Johnny Watson does not even play guitar on this record but gets ballistic on the piano and lays down some striking vocals with his distinctive voice. The overall pace is relaxed and the music has a bit of a retro feeling steadily rooted in the '40s and '50s swing and vocal jazz, but Watson with his mates on drums and bass really pull it off with a fresh and exciting edge. A steaming song like "I'll Remember April" might be an exception - an instrumental with furious piano lines and a nearly Latin beat that recalls a bossa nova dance tune just played in a more hot-blooded style. Even a creamy ballad like "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" has its relevance in the entire musical picture. These two songs show the edges of his style and they present an inspired bandleader and musician anyway. No wonder he reinvented his own style a decade later when funk and soul started to dominate the black music scene. Still the music sounds and feels like the cover of the album shows - a very well dressed and styled young man playing chess alone in front of the fireplace. The album really turns this picture into music - well executed, well produced, perfectly styled but still spirited and passionate. Mr. Watson managed to live in both parallel worlds. The mansions and the backstreets echo his melodies. He was a visionary at each stage of his career. For fans of outstanding 1950s and 1960s vocal jazz.

BUILDERS Beatin Hearts LP
"Bill Direen is a legend of the New Zealand underground. He has written and produced poetry, novels and a slew of recorded material. Weaned on garage bands in the late '60s, Direen started producing seven-inch records in the early '80s, all of them stunners. These releases - Six Impossible Things, Die Bilder, Soloman's Ball and High Thirties Piano - were self-financed and distributed though Flying Nun (and recently reissued by the benevolent Unwucht label). Beatin Hearts is Direen's ultimate, unforgettable debut album, not to mention Flying Nun's first full-length album release. All seventeen tracks are brilliant short pieces of energy, harmony and spite. Anyone with an appreciation for Flying Nun's early recordings can find its genesis here, the dawning of one of the greatest music scenes to ever exist."

STRAWBERRY JAM, THE Jam LP
2015 release. Black vinyl version. The Strawberry Jam is a rather fresh UK band and Jam is their debut from 2007, originally released on CD. The first three songs have a quite earthy feel and go from utterly cool country garage rock hybrids to proto-punkish eruptions, all within the first ten minutes of the record. Initially it's tempting to file this band under garage rock music due to its lovely late '60s feeling. There is a savage lead guitar on the first few songs, making them a great joy to listen to. However, there is much more to discover. "Alice D.", "I Like You The Most" and "Alice D. Reprise" take the turn from the down-to-earth, fuzzed-out US garage rock to a rather British psychedelic pop with a slightly giddy expression. This is the kind of stuff on some early records from the London underground and Canterbury scene. The more laid back and folkish psychedelic sound and the weird humorous pieces stay with the listener for a while until The Strawberry Jam find themselves slipping through a time hole which leads from early 1967 to the summer of 1969. "I Don't Want To Make You Mine" is a straight blues rock stomper with a typical British blues approach similar to bands such as Savoy Brown or Ten Years After. Some more beautiful hippie folk follows in its veins and an epic psychedelic pop tune ends a very colorful and captivating album. It's noticeably a modern day effort since this bandwidth of styles and sounds would have been a bit too far out for an original sixties audience. The closing track "Dragon Seed" is a laid-back epic with ever drifting rhythmic pulsations and a wicked swirl of sounds. A few moments of free-form experiments close this retrospective but joyful album. From The Seeds to MC5 to The Beatles to Tomorrow and Twink, this is a great soundtrack for a summer trip.

NILES, JOHN JACOB The Boone-Tolliver Recordings CD
"In the 1950s, while audio recording was still an astronomically expensive art, limited to the laboratory-like environment of the professional studio, a few forward-thinking artists began to experiment with the idea of home recording. Sun Ra in Chicago and Les Paul in New York made history away from the studios. And deep in Appalachia, folk singer John Jacob Niles recorded a series of EPs in the place where he was most comfortable singing -- his living room. Until now, these recordings have not been reissued on any format, so it is with great pleasure that another artist-run, mom-and-pop label, L.M. Duplication, presents them back to the world. The Boone-Tolliver Recordings contains some of Niles's greatest originals, such as 'Go 'Way from my Window,' as well as traditional Appalachian ballads he found while traveling around Kentucky song collecting. 'The Lass from the Low Country' is a haunting classic where Niles's singular falsetto raises an eerie air to the sorrowful story of two lovers who can't be together due to the difference in social class. 'Little Mattie Groves,' an English song of the 16th century, is one of the centerpieces of the collection, where with quickening pace and tension, Niles takes on the voices of three distinct characters, as well as the narrator. As the story unfolds to a climax of violence, Niles completely loses himself to the narration, like a ghost from the England of 400 years ago come back to haunt the hills and valleys of Appalachia."

UUBBUURRUU/EL NAPOLEON Swamp Ritual LP
2015 release. Swamp Ritual is a beautiful split album by two Canadian based acts, Uubbuurruu and El Napoleon, that have a close connection and a common love for psychedelic sounds and space rock, despite their different turns on the same thing. It is no miracle that Uubbuurruu front man Joey Napoleon is in both acts. While Uubbuurruu have chosen a rather laid-back and melodic pop psych route, just with slightly more edgy guitars, Joey kicks off into a fuzzed-out acid-punk inferno with El Napoleon. Dark and gloomy garage beat with dirty riffs and even dirtier and simmering hot melodies is the lowest common dominator. This will certainly appeal to all those who still live in the yester-year, some 46 years ago, when beat became rock and songs became twisted, uncontrollable freak-outs due to hordes of proto-punks going nuts on topics like the ongoing Vietnam War or sexual liberation. Although Uubbuurruu may have the more freaked-out name, their music consists of straight compositions with very striking melodies that drag the listener onto a colorful trip. El Napoleon on the other hand work with the same kind of firing harmonies and vocal lines but give them an extra buzz with their guitar eruptions that go further than your average '60s garage rock and reaches spheres of rage only MC5 or The Stooges would have dared to touch. Eastern flavored guitar leads enhance the psychedelic mood to its maximum. All this is certainly very well played but it might not appeal to fans of clean digital sounds as the earthy and often dirty production is the icing on the cake. Fans of Baby Woodrose, Spids Nögenhat, early Monster Magnet and oldies like The Seeds, The Third Bardo and tons of English pop psych acts like Tomorrow or Apple will enjoy this split album.

I FENOMENI Un Vuoto Appeso LP
Merlins Nose Records present a reissue of I Fenomeni's Un Vuoto Appeso, originally released in 2013. I Fenomeni formed in 2010 in Italy with the intention to create the dirtiest and most fuzzed-out garage beat ever. Dirty guitar sounds and cheesy Farfisa organ lines on a solid and straightly pushing rhythmical subtraction with some melodic vocals sung in Italian are the ingredients of a joyous and colorful record that feels like a lost gem from the mid 60's. Sound, interplay, melodies and spirit speak of smoky clubs with swirls of colors ornamenting the walls and acid drenched drinks being served by topless waitresses in short skirts. Starting with the early Byrds, moving along to the US underground heroes such as The Seeds, The Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Third Bardo or the later Animals and psyched-out Jefferson Airplane stuff. Despite the rather short length of these acid garage beat tunes, the listener will leave reality for a while. Everything here just grabs the soul and melts it away - memorable melodies, moody riffs and those simmering fuzzed-out lead guitars. This is definitely addictive stuff. Fans of current acid rock like Baby Woodrose will not only dig I Fenomeni, but definitely worship them as well. The language is rather not important in this context as the voice alone is commanding and the message is understood without the language. Beautiful and haunting, a must have for all psyche and garage freaks.

TRIO MANDILI With Love LP
LP version. With Love is the debut album from Trio Mandili, a trio of young ladies from Georgia in the Caucasus area. Being into singing, folk songs, and filming, one day the three girls made a recording of the love song "Apareka" and the video gained them three million views on Youtube. This is pure folk, three ladies singing to the sound of classic Eurasian stringed instruments, such as the panduri and tschonguri, long necked lutes. The all acoustic instrumentation can be considered the soil from which the voices of the three lead singers rise, the instrumental lines going deeper than that of course. It might sound like a miracle that this music gained so much attention in a time of flat-ass, streamline plastic pop, but if you take a closer listen to With Love, it's not hard to realize that it does justice to its title. The melodies sung by the girls grab the heart immediately and then the soul. This is a passionate brand of eastern, Caucasian folk and has an enchanting approach within the melodies. The girls sing with a very determined expression in their performance. Trio Mandili seems to be much more than just a group of young ladies playing music. There is a kind of mystical atmosphere rising from this compilation of simple love songs coming straight from the heart. The spiritual vibe should not be underestimated. The compositions themselves may be rather simple, as it is the fact with most classic folk tunes from any region or century are, but the emotional depth is amazing and the performance is utterly tight. The vocal performances are uniquely impressive.

ELIWAGAR I Volven's Vev LP
Eliwagar is a pagan folk band formed in France in 2006, relocated to Norway after a couple of albums and with a fair amount of releases ever since. I Vølven's Vev is their eleventh full length effort. Expect matured songwriting culminating in anthems of extra-mundane beauty. The main focus lies on haunting yet memorable vocal melodies with an utterly peaceful and joyful atmosphere. Around the mystical atmosphere, Eliwagar weaves a subtle harmony network with a steady hypnotizing drive. Most of the tracks feature bewitched percussion, acoustic guitar, flute and natural sounds like the whispering wind or the waves rolling on the rough Nordic shore. These are backed by the enchanting voice of Brenda Runahild, the front woman behind Eliwagar. The songs drag you into a dreamy state and make you think of druids and heathen ceremonies. This is by far one of the most outstanding gems in the pagan folk genre and on par with great acts such as fellow Norwegians Wardruna (despite Eliwagar being more melodic and dreamy), In Gowan Ring (just with an emphasis on Norwegian folk) or Faun. Eliwagar knows how to create a whole world of mystical sounds that unfold in front the listener's inner eyes and ears. The sound and performance are as brilliant as the compositions themselves. A giant masterpiece of current pagan folk music.

GAUSSIAN CURVE Clouds LP
2016 repress. Music from Memory's fourth release sees the Amsterdam-based label taking an exciting sidestep with the release of Clouds. It's the debut album from Gaussian Curve, a collaboration between Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin, Land of Light's Jonny Nash, and Marco Sterk (also known as Young Marco). The trio came together during a weekend-long recording session in April, 2014, with no preconceived ideas. Developed around improvised jams, the eight tracks on the album are all single-take live recordings. The three musicians succeed in developing a musical language all of their own, with Gigi Masin on Rhodes and piano; Jonny Nash on guitar, melodica, synths, and trumpet; and Marco Sterk on synths, rhythmic structures, and production duties. Recorded in the heart of Amsterdam's red-light district, the album reflects the unusually warm spring and the buzz from the open windows that filled the derelict downtown studio space during that particular weekend. And on the more introverted late-night compositions, the music quietly soars, reflecting the brooding melancholy of an evening in that particular part of the city. Clouds is a simple, heartfelt record of an inspired meeting of unique souls in unique surroundings.

PATERNOSTER Paternoster LP
Reissue of Paternoster's self-titled album, originally released in 1972. Not every kraut album comes from a German band. Brainticket were in fact Swiss with a Belgian mastermind, for example. Paternoster on the other hand, who play an organ-driven solemn progressive rock with a heavy edge, come from Austria and really enlighten the heart of all fans of dark and often morbid rock music. It might be a good idea to overhear the pronunciation and the whole lyrics and take the vocals as another instrument, adding some color to the whole picture. The voices are indeed quite charismatic and memorable as are the compositions. The late 1960s psychedelic scene has surely made an impact on this band, considering the fuzzy lead guitar, creeping rhythms and wicked keyboards often creating a climate of sheer dementia with the mournful voice of the singer on top. The record sounds as if the band was jamming in a giant church hall and therefore has a really gloomy mood. There are quite a few freak-outs to be experienced along the way and in most cases they turn into some epic space trips that recall the greatest early Tangerine Dream and Pink Floyd processions just with a funeral atmosphere. This is a mournful album that sounds tragic before even considering the lyrics center on the average working day of an average man. Could progressive rock get more demented than Van Der Graaf Generator? This is vivid proof. Made by freaks, for freaks.

MCCHURCH SOUNDROOM Delusion LP
Ohrwaschl Records present a reissue of McChurch Soundroom's Delusion, originally released in 1971. The cover of the gatefold sleeve promises sheer darkness and madness - A skull in a bird's nest on the back and a skull covered with candle wax on the front. The rather pastoral folky beginning seems to prove these ominous expectations wrong but the heavy progressive organ driven rock of this German outfit comes close to what the artwork suggests. "Delusion" contains twisted passages with an atmosphere of sheer insanity and heavy rocking outbursts of the classic kind that shakes souls and drags them into a different world. Some classic blues rock parts get thrown in for good measure but the focus on progressive and heavy aspects. "Dream Of A Drummer" proves that the bassist a real maniac as he really smokes it in some of the more loose sections when he and the drummer create flashing rhythms upon which the lead guitarist takes off into other spheres. Being crazy must be of importance here but McChurch Soundroom are sensitive to dynamic as well, keeping the listeners attention when it comes to lengthy instrumental jam parts with duels and dialogues. All-in-all, this is definitely a prototypical '70s heavy progressive outfit and it has the spirit of most UK bands from 1969 to 1971, including vocals with a flawless English pronunciation. Listening beyond the melodies, there are some weird rhythm patterns. Solemn organ parts lead the listener to the darkest and dirtiest backstreet pub before getting struck by powerfully rocking jazz passages. McChurch Soundroom's Delusion takes a trip into the remote areas of urban life, all of it in a quite heavy fashion. For fans of Gravy Train or early Jethro Tull.

ANALOGY The Suite LP
Ohrwaschl Records present a reissue of Analogy's The Suite. German progressive rock band Analogy released its sole classic, Analogy (1972), and even scored a deal for Italy but soon seemed to have faded into obscurity. Nobody really was aware of a recording named The Suite that happened around 1980. It presented the folky side of Analogy, who seemed at least quite creative for a time when electronic pop took over the whole music scene. Analogy went into the opposite direction and reached out for musical realms that have been visited by legendary English acts like Trees, Fairport Convention or Steeleye Span. Dramatic and powerful rock with a progressive edge meets mystical and magical British folk in a way that is reminiscent of an English or Irish band from 1972 rather than a bunch of Germans about to cross the threshold to the '80s. This is handmade and the musicians play with a simmering passion. Two epic compositions were originally part of The Suite but for this reissue, a bonus track has been unearthed from the vaults to add even more value to this gem. Several passages have a theatrical approach and feel like music from a stage play and movie like The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) or records Meat Loaf recorded in the late '70s, but those aspects are only tinges of color in an overwhelming sound picture drawn by this truly progressive band. For everybody who loves the heavier Horslips and epic stuff like Omega, this album develops, passage to passage, and makes this journey into your dreams a worthwhile trip.

DIES IRAE First LP
2015 release. Ohrwaschl Records present a reissue of Dies Irae's First, originally released in 1971. German proto heavy metal and proto doom metal has always been more of an underground genre due to the fact that most bands only reached a regional level in every aspect. Dies Irae are certainly something of an exception to the rule when it comes to the quality. First is heavy and dark with open song structures that leave much room for experimentation. Despite the fact that the simmering fuzz guitar cuts through like a chainsaw, there are still many parts in each song showcasing a fondness for playful jazz-inspired passages where all musicians prove their skills and conjures a gloomy atmosphere. The musicians have a light-footed swing but in other cases, Dies Irae go utterly crazy in a psychedelic freak-out fashion. Trippy moments are abundant on First and come in between the hard-hitting, heavily-grinding doom outbursts. Nobody was even eager to call it doom yet but all the ingredients were there - Think of a jam session with Black Sabbath and Amon Düül II. This album is highly original and deserving of a place among the greatest krautrock albums of all times. The acid is audible and doing its work in a very skillful way. For fans of proto metal from the early '70s, who dig music with a progressive edge and have a fondness for trippy psychedelic rock.

GRAU, DANIEL Disco Fantasy LP
LP version. Oom Dooby Dochas present a reissue of Daniel Grau's Disco Fantasy, originally released in 1979. This 1979 release was the fourth solo effort of Venezuelan composer and musician Daniel Grau. Disco-funk with a Latin melody and rhythm approach surely was the hottest thing among the dancing folks back in the day and the rather futuristic synthesizer arrangements turn these memorable tunes into a spacey and spicy affair. The sound is perfect and the performance equals its package. The compositions are quite long all-in-all, giving it a hypnotic effect on the listener and dancer. The continuing, pulsating groove comes in a repetitive manner creating a floating atmosphere. Disco Fantasy is surely a product of its era and made for disco lovers to dance on through the simmering nights, but unlike most mainstream disco albums this record opens the gate to another dimension touching the senses of everybody in reach when it gets played on the turntable. Next to the similar massive Donna Summer works like "I Feel Love", this is the true essence of disco music - entirely instrumental with an emphasis on synthesizer melodies instead of vocals. Drift away into your disco fantasy.

GRAU, DANIEL El Leon Bailarin LP
LP version. Oom Dooby Dochas present a reissue of Daniel Grau's El Leon Bailarin, originally released in 1980. El Leon Bailarin shows the typical trademarks of its Venezuelan creator Daniel Grau. Spaced-out disco grooves with some nifty female vocals aspirated gently upon the light-footed waves of synthesizer melodies and pulsating rhythms. An exception is the second track "Con En Cielo En Tus Ojos" which is a lush and utterly relaxed floating Latin pop number with a repetitive vocal line breathing an atmosphere of peace. There is definitely more color on this album than expected from listening to the Disco Fantasy (DOO 16001CD/LP, 1979) record which in fact was a strong piece already. Fans of Donna Summer during the late '70s will love the silky, yet vivid feel of the steady pulse the rhythms offer on El Leon Bailarin. This is one of those albums that should have been legendary among the dancing public when it was released - peppered with memorable tunes that work well even decades after its release. Looking beyond the surface, dig this is a real jewel of its genre.

ZUMMO, PETER Dress Code (Don't Look At My Car) LP
Peter Zummo presents Dress Code (Don't Look At My Car) on Optimo Music. Peter Zummo (born 1948) is an American composer and musician. He plays the trombone, valve trombone, euphonium, synthesizer, other electronic instruments, and also sings. He is associated with the post-minimalist and Downtown aesthetics, and he describes his music as "minimalism plus a whole lot more." He's well-known for his work with Arthur Russell."In this project for Optimo, the listener can hear that my musical food pyramid has musicians at top, or maybe they are at the bottom. In any case, they are important. That is why, from track to track, I selected segments in which one player or another is featured in the take. Some may think that we musicians do multiple takes to get the perfect performance, but I like to find the special interactions lurking in each excursion. Different players came forward in each of the takes, which were recorded in the studios Seaside Lounge and Headroom, in Brooklyn, and live in performances at Cube Cinema, in Bristol, UK, as well as in Long Island City and on Staten Island, New York. In order to escape the tyranny of the lyric, I am exploring in this release the possibilities of nonsensical and non-emotional lyrics. These kinds of lyrics bring the singing voices into the mix without an overweening message. The tracks include open-form compositions in which the duration was not specified." -- Peter Zummo, June 2016.

LEIMER, K. Re-enact CD
"Following a few years of back-catalog recovery, K. Leimer has completed work on his first new solo album since The Grey Catalog. These ten new tracks follow an emergent arc, a refinement of the techniques he has used since Permissions. Highly tactile, with an emphasis on subharmonics, Re-enact sketches an antediluvian soundstage of deteriorating fragments scattered among still-recognizable artifacts. This multitude of points-of-collapse in textural, timbre, harmonic and rhythmic relationships, continually folds in on itself to reveal moments of inner coherence and cognition. Embedded throughout with a wealth of digital and analog detail, Re-enact sets a new post-ambient direction for Leimer's work. K. Leimer founded Palace of Lights in 1979. Leimer's early work has recently been reissued by Autumn and RVNG, and his early cassette work is in the critically acclaimed VOD box set American Cassette Culture (VOD 139KL-LP, 2015). Leimer has been actively producing music since the mid-1970s -- his current catalog includes 17 albums plus two collaborative albums with Marc Barreca. Leimer's work is included in the collection of The British Library."

FUNKEES, THE Now I'm A Man LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of The Funkees's Now I'm A Man, originally released in 1976. Has there ever been a band as aptly named as The Funkees? Formed after the Biafran War to raise spirits in the east, they quickly conquered the dance floors of Lagos and in 1973 headed to London, playing at Ronnie Scott's and tearing up the local scene. Now I'm A Man captures the band at the height of their London-era pomp. Africans were making soca, West Indians were playing Afro-funk and discolypso blasted from boom-boxes across West London. The Funkees soaked it all up and delivered it back - funkier, tighter and louder. Bookended by two Santana-esque jams, "I'm A Man" and "303", The Funkees second album delivers slow burning Afro-beat ("Mimbo"), urgent jungle bongo chants ("Salam") and straight-ahead floor-fillers ("Dance With Me"). Little wonder that legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, recorded two sessions with them. The Funkees soon disbanded after this album; Jake Sollo joined Osibisa, Sonny Akpabio and Harry Mosco pursued successful solo careers. Now I'm A Man shows The Funkees as they burned brightly as Nigeria's most talented, inventive and funky band.

FAKROUN, AHMED Ahmed Fakroun LP
LP version. PMG present an anthology of Ahmed Fakroun's work. "Insanely popular across the Maghreb, name-checked in international spy novels and beloved of music adventurers like David Byrne, Libyan superstar Ahmed Fakroun is the most astounding raï-disco-electronica pioneer ever to be heard. His 1983 album, Mots D'Amour (PMG 005CD/LP, 1983) is regarded as a global fusion classic. This self-titled anthology of songs from the late '70s is an altogether mellower affair. The grooves are slower and sweeter and Fakroun's multi-instrumentalist chops on the saz, mandol and darbouka drum really come to the fore. The album includes tracks from two of Ahmed's rarest and most sought-after 7 inches. 'Nysan' has an almost west coast vibe: think Ned Doheny via Benghazi. Balearic-minded collectors will love the haunting flute runs in 'Awedny', produced by Tommy Vance, and 'Njoom Al Leyel'. There's even a touch of lilting reggae on 'Falah' and 'Yu Hussad.' Ahmend Fakroun is the perfect late night, come-down album, especially after a hot and sweaty evening in a raï club, somewhere in North Africa." -- Peter Moore.

KITAJIMA, OSAMU Benzaiten LP
LP version. Psychedelic Sounds International present a reissue of Osamu Kitajima's Benzaiten, originally released in 1976. Benzaiten is world music and ethno sounds with an obvious Japanese origin, meeting progressive rock and psych rock. The result is a captivating piece of melodic and deeply atmospheric music that paints pictures of life in ancient Japan. If Pink Floyd were Japanese, their music might have sounded like this album. The frequency of the arrangements on Benzaiten is reminiscent of what English prog bands created in the early to mid '70s, just with a different ethnical approach. Benzaiten is even a more progressive effort than anything most British bands have ever managed to fabricate and is still utterly natural and vivid concerning the flow of the music. All participating musicians here are professionals and their performances are tight and still passionate. The sound is warm and vivid and the song structures are wide open and welcoming. Electronic elements in the percussion section add some oddity to the whole musical picture. The cool aspect of Benzaiten is the rocking guitar which keeps the whole album together. Must be the Japanese equivalent to German acts like Amon Düül II, Embryo and Guru Guru.

MENSAH & THE TEMPOS, E.T. King of Highlife Anthology 4CD
Restocked; featured on NPR Fresh Air! E.T. Mensah was the first King of Highlife, and although he died in 1996, he's still -- and forever will be -- the King of Highlife, the mainly Ghanaian dance music that he made popular around Africa and beyond in the 1950s and '60s. E.T. (as everyone called him) played a variety of instruments but especially saxophones and the trumpet, composed hundreds of songs and dance tunes, and led the best band on the West African Gold Coast, The Tempos. Modeled on the great American swing bands of the 1930s and '40s, The Tempos blended re-Africanized jazz, Latin music, and calypso with various local dance styles. With their records and tours over the two decades following their recording debut for Decca in 1952, they spread the highlife dance-band sound throughout West Africa (particularly Nigeria, where the young saxophonist Fela Kuti was deeply influenced by E.T. Mensah) and on to the Congo, East Africa, and Southern Africa, everywhere inspiring new dance-band styles. RetroAfric's 4-CD compilation includes all of The Tempos' hits as well as recordings that haven't been available since the days of shellac 78s, all 69 tracks remastered from the best available sources. It is the most comprehensive collection of E.T. Mensah recordings ever released. The 64-page booklet is filled with historical photographs and a biography by John Collins, the Ghana-based record producer and highlife scholar, and the package features specially-commissioned art by Kofi Ankroba.

CHANTLER, JOHN Which Way To Leave? LP
Includes download code. Which Way To Leave? is the latest record by Stockholm based musician John Chantler. The self-reflexive sequencing that tracks the sub-harmonic series in the opening blast of "Falling Forward" positions the record as Chantler's most explicitly melodic. These melodies however do not exist in a mono-dimensional vacuum, rather they co-exist in a meshed framework of dynamic layers of timbre. The record's abrupt cuts, deft variations of density and unexpected diversions are happily explored with head-long dives into ravishing texture and extended stretches of surface stasis. The music draws on a domestic reimagining of the traditions of studio based electronic music/musique concrete and 20th century minimalism and delivers this with brash revitalized energy. Born out of his relocation to Stockholm, following an extended period in London, Which Way To Leave? bares the marks of senses attuned to new environments and spaces. Recorded for the most part at Chantler's home studio, additional material was recorded at Elektronmusikstudion (EMS). It features guest appearances by Carina Thorén (For Barry Ray) and cellist Okkyung Lee. Still Light, Outside his fourth LP released in 2015 is an extended suite that combines passages of stark minimalism centered at the bodily invasive extremes of the pipe organ's register with striking explosions of color; massed chords shot through with heavy distortion and electronics that operate according to their own dream logic. It was described as "strikingly beautiful" by The Guardian. Chantler's three previous LPs were all released on Room40. Even Clean Hands Damage the Work (RM 459LP, 2014) included the first output from his time at EMS. It followed The Luminous Ground - released in 2011 and was included in The Wire magazine's top releases of that year. The Luminous Ground was his first LP release focusing on the modular synthesizer system he first explored as part of the trio LP with Lawrence English and Tujiko Noriko, 2008's U.

GARVARENTZ, GEORGES Panic Button LP
LP version. Skokiaan present a reissue of Georges Garvarentz's Panic Button, originally released in 1964. The mastermind behind this album can be seen as a luminary in the field of movie soundtracks, especially for the '60s and '70s, his career lasting til the early '90s, up to his untimely death. Panic Button is the third album of its kind from Garvarentz, composed for an Italian low budget comedy film, of the same name, released in 1964. The most interesting fact about the movie is the participation of cult actress Jayne Mansfield, who also was part of the inner circle of Anton Lavey in the '60s. The music is a colorful trip through different styles from Italian traditional music to lush orchestral baroque music with most of the tunes being laid down by a well-rehearsed, big band. With big band swing background, Garvarentz explores the more light-footed corners of this genre and the result is a breathtaking joy. The melodies bring images of crowded market places and nifty street restaurants in Italian cities. The performances have the right amount of steam and passion to get the listener dancing and singing along to these sunny harmonies. The pieces themselves are perfectly placed with high energetic moments and gentle parts following each other to sustain the attention of the listener and underline the different scenes of the movie in an ideal way. For fans of old movie scores from the early '60s that make use of big band orchestration, hip-shaking grooves to the tunes and the occasional hushed moods. Panic Button is all about fun and felicity with a deeper feeling accompanying the compositions.

MURRAY, SONNY Sonny's Time Now LP
LP version. Skokiaan present a reissue of Sonny Murray's Sonny's Time Now, originally released in 1965. Only a few months after recording Ghosts (SKOK 001CD, 1965) with Albert Ayler, Sonny Murray released his first album as a leader. Sonny's Time Now is one of the holy grails for collectors and aficionados of free avant garde jazz music from the 1960s. This 2016 vinyl reissue is the first vinyl reissue of the album in 30 years. The last CD reissue was in 1991. Albert Ayler and his Ghosts album from 1965 was already a hard thing to swallow, except for the most adventurous explorers of the furthest corners of the border districts of music. An unconventional view on onomatopoeia is necessary to enter this world and drummer Sonny Murray went another step ahead on Sonny's Time Now. The lengthy piece "Virtue" presents an ever pulsating wall of rhythm that sounds like a wuthering ocean with the horn section going nuts on top. The saxes and trumpets are constantly erupting and it is a challenge for the listener to find the melodies among their output of sound. "Justice", another lengthy piece divided into two parts, continues the quest "Virtue" began. The atmosphere of these free improvisations slowly swallows the listener and the shrieks of the saxophones and trumpets, frees souls from physical bodies. What feels like an impenetrable thicket of sound at first is soon enlightening and a memorable structure within all the chaos. The same year that John Coltrane took the last step away from traditional jazz and music in general, this album was equally as radical but seems to have disappeared within the depths of music history. The most radical piece on this record comes with the shorter "Black Art", a writing by activist and controversial poet Amiri Baraka, aka LeRoy Jones, is underlined with freak-out eruptions from Sonny Murray and his mates. This is the right soundtrack for a cathartic meditation. For a must have for fans of Coltrane. "The Lie" is not featured on the original release.

SHIHAB, SAHIB Sahib's Jazz Party LP
LP version. Skokiaan present a reissue of Sahib Shihab's Sahib's Jazz Party, originally released in 1964. In a time before jazz music went free and avant garde, there were a couple of inspired souls who put an emphasis on extended jams and improvised, yet melodic parts based on a rather repetitive rhythm background. The result in turning away from the rather artistic and complicated bebop was the modal jazz that came up in the second half of the 1950s, lasting as the leading style until the mid to late '60s. Sahib Shihab can be seen as one of the protagonists of modal jazz despite being more of an underground star in the scene and being more popular in Europe than in the USA, from where he originates. He often worked as a member of an ensemble but had a couple of albums out as a bandleader. Sahib's Jazz Party is his third album as a bandleader. Recorded live in its entirety Sahib's Jazz Party features a few highly entertaining announcements by the master himself leaving the impression that Sahib was a bit far out that day. The performance is beautiful and passionate. He plays flute and saxophone backed up by a Danish jazz orchestra even with an electric guitar, in clean mode of course. Especially in the third part of the "Conversation" piece the dialogues between saxophone and trumpet are amazing while in "Charade" Shihab uses his flute to conjure a mind-relaxing atmosphere. The rhythms are all quite hot and whipping. The drummers must be some kind of madmen. Yes, there are two drummers indicated for the "Conversation" long track and the ever pulsating and vibrating rhythm patterns will prove that right. Bass and guitar rather back up everything and fill the gaps with simple notes which add just enough to leave the whole picture feeling full and round. Sahib's Jazz Party holds the same level as the most appreciated works of Miles Davis and John Coltrane during their modal jazz stint. All-in-all, the whole band is steaming and so full of passion, any listener will be electrified without fail.

CLERVAUX & BEATRICE DILLON, RUPERT Studies I-XVII for Samplers and Percussion LP
Repressed. Studies I-XVII for Samplers and Percussion is the debut collaborative LP by Rupert Clervaux and Beatrice Dillon, a minimal but diverse record taking in influences from techno, experimental music, ethnographic music, improvisation, electronic music, and field recordings. This collection of short, intuitive rhythm pieces was made sporadically over a period of ten months in 2013. A shared love of repetitive music is immediately apparent, from the transcontinental axis of electronic music that connects London, Berlin, and Detroit, stretching back to the experimental and minimalist composers of the '60s; Xenakis's Psappha, Reich's Four Organs, and Pierre Schaeffer's Etude Aux Objets all crop up in the preambles and debriefs that bookended recording sessions. Equally important here, though, are Dillon and Clervaux's more personalized respective interests in ethnic and world music (see Dillon's 2014 Folkways II compilation for The Trilogy Tapes) and free jazz and improvisation (see Clervaux's mixing and mastering credits for labels like Treader, OTOroku, Matchless, and Fataka). Add to these some more incidental discussions of, for instance, the Morning Ragas of Bismillah Khan, or 2010s releases by Untold, and you begin to get an idea of the varied listening syllabus behind this record. Recurrent methods naturally took shape; the sampler is used throughout as a digital mirror of the instrument being manually played (notably with the balafons of "I" and the vibraslap of "VIII"), triggered samples and played instruments engage in brashly improvised duets ("VI" and "XII"), and unpredictable, contextual sounds are allowed into the compositions, such as the muffled kick drum from the studio next door, the random squeak of a malfunctioning fire alarm in the hallway ("VII"), or the buzzing resonance of a snare drum at the back of the room ("VIII"). And by seeking to avoid making stylized cribs of any of their many influences, the music has the room to be both serious and, even in its more avant-garde inclinations, humorous at the same time ("X" and "XVI") -- it welcomes physical, emotional, and cerebral responses. Perhaps the only universal rule was the time spent on each Study; anything that didn't immediately work, or seemed to call too strongly for further embellishment, was summarily scrapped. And those that remain appear here in chronological order. Recommended if you like The Durian Brothers, Harmonious Thelonious, Moondog, Konono No.1, Morphosis, Tod Dockstader, Burnt Friedman, Folkways Records, etc. Includes download code.

The music is purely bright and swinging with a joyful mood. Dorothy Ashby is always there upfront while the brass section mostly fills the background with color. Typical for the ancient jazz, there are no vocals on this record but this only adds to the depth and intriguing atmosphere of the music. Ashby starts where Coltrane left the field of real song-oriented albums for his experimental efforts and she really pulls it off. The Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby is haunting but with a rather relaxed approach to this style. For the time it was released, this album was an utterly progressive effort and the pop sensibility of many tracks make it a great joy to spin. Jazz fans will dig it and open minded people who love the music of the '60s will also develop a fondness for this beauty.

WATERS, MUDDY Folk Singer LP
Spellbound Music present a reissue of Muddy Waters's Folk Singer, originally released in 1964. Muddy Waters, real name McKinley Morganfield, is cited as the father of modern Chicago blues, having an influence on folk, jazz, blues, rock'n'roll and even heavy rock, he was a composer of quite a few popular standards. Folk Singer is his forth long player from 1964 and his first and only all acoustic affair. Backed by some big names from the blues community such as Willie Dixon on standing bass and a young Buddy Guy on second acoustic guitar, Waters created an album that was reduced to the bare bones. Every note played on these wooden guitars is so meaningful and vibrant. Even an acoustic version of a song like "Good Morning Little School Girl" rocks the hell out of the speakers. It is a remake of a Sonny Boy Williamson composition and develops from the strongly pronounced guitar play between Mr. Waters and Buddy Guy. His voice comes very much upfront but since he is the commander and preacher man, the storyteller and wizard, this comes as another advantage of this record. There is much room in the sound, so much space in between the instruments where passion and magic flow. The listener can hear how much of an obsession Waters and Guy have for their instruments, while Dixon pulls out the most laid-back bass lines possible, as not to disturb the master and his apprentice in firing smoking hot lead work from their fretboards. Folk Singer is indeed an album that has much more to say than most over amplified rock efforts which came later. Just listen and be enchanted.

COLTRANE, ALICE A Monastic Trio LP
2016 repress. "Born Alice McLeod into a musical Detroit family, Alice Coltrane began playing piano at age seven and later studied with Bud Powell in Paris. Upon returning to the States, she joined vibraphonist Terry Gibbs' group and eventually shared a bill with the John Coltrane Quartet. In 1965 the two wed in Juárez, Mexico, and played alongside one another until her husband's last performance in May, 1967. A Monastic Trio, created in the year following her husband's passing, is Coltrane's first recording as a band leader and features six original compositions. While John's spirit can be felt throughout -- from the song titles ('Ohnedaruth' was his adopted Hindu name) to the personnel (Jimmy Garrison, Rashied Ali, and Pharaoh Sanders were frequent collaborators) -- the album showcases Alice's immense talent for fusing spiritual free-jazz and new-age with classical, Eastern, post-bop and gospel. As the late Amiri Baraka writes, '"I Want to See You" is a monastic piano concerto. With echoes of Europe... it has a solemnity and majesty to it.... Yes, monastic is the word. The piano broods in its earth imagination.'"

COLTRANE, ALICE Universal Consciousness LP
2016 repress. "Originally released on Impulse! in 1971, Universal Consciousness is a major turning point in Alice Coltrane's momentous career. While her previous albums pushed the limits of spiritual free-jazz and featured much of her late husband's band, Universal Consciousness expands the harpist / pianist's compositional palette with organ and strings (working with Ornette Coleman). 'Oh Allah' is the finest example of Coltrane's new direction: tense violins dissolve into sublime organ solos and exquisite brushwork from long-time Mile Davis collaborator Jack DeJohnette. While the title track undulates with a fierce clamor, 'Hare Krishna' showcases Coltrane's uncanny ability for transcendent and slow-paced arrangements. In The Wire's '100 Records That Set the World on Fire,' David Toop writes, '[Universal Consciousness] clearly connects to other dyspeptic jazz traditions -- the organ trio, the soloists with strings -- yet volleys them into outer space, ancient Egypt, the Ganges, the great beyond. The production is astounding, the quality of improvisation is riveting, the string arrangements are apocalyptic rather than saccharine, the balance of turbulence and calm a genuine dialectic that later mystic / exotic post-jazz copped out of pursuing. Her lack of constraint was dimly regarded by adherents of '70s jazz and its masculine orthodoxies, yet Alice deserved better credit for virtuosity, originality, and the sheer will power needed to realized her vision.' This first-time vinyl reissue has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

MONOCHROME SET, THE Cosmonaut LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. At the end of the '70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of "post-punk" bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from '80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. In later years, this praise has continued with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as "timeless", and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continued gaining admirers. The Monochrome Set is black & white, at the same time, with no grey. That's what the name always meant - delivering mirth and melancholy, pleasure and panic, delight and dread, wrapped up in tuneful pop songs with curious lyrics. The band seem to occupy a parallel universe, with a rich panoply of sounds and words, all somehow evocative of something just beyond reach or remembrance - yet the songs have an immediate simplicity and power. Cosmonaut, the band's 13th album, is a perfect example of this exhilarating mix. The title track opens with a Theremin cyber fly buzzing towards your skull before the song hits, launching you into a mirror dimension that is both familiar and alien. The whole album is a trip that starts with a hallucinating cash-till lady, then travels through dream-sets involving cannibalism, disaffected squirrels, strange gods, dying sweethearts, sexual depravity, Alzheimer's, backward evolution, and ends in an operating theatre, amid a sea of medical tentacles. In short, a camping holiday. The trademark Monochrome Set guitar is ever-present, but this time complemented by delightfully busy keyboards, which give an added richness and spice to the album. In just 30 minutes, Cosmonaut catapults the listener into orbit and takes them on a zany, hallucinogenic joyride - not in outer space as it turns out, but in and around the arcane and fantastical recesses of Bid's imagination. Cosmonaut comes with minimal risk of explosion, persistent floatiness and no disappointing space food.

Lurka presents Beater EP. A-side "Beater" brings a meticulous blend of clever sound design and one of the most thunderous kick/snare patterns you'll hear. Seriously tough. "Density" introduces a sea of rippling arps, set to a back drop of deep sub-bass. It is probably Lurka's most melodic and introspective track yet, whilst still keeping his trademark percussion work.

CAMP LO Uptown Saturday Night 2LP
2016 repress; 2010 reissue. "Camp Lo's first record, which did not disappoint. It struck the perfect balance between club tracks and underground bangers for the mixtape crowd. Critically acclaimed and fan approved, this late '90s album must-have was complimented by the incredible cover art illustrated by legendary NYC graffiti artist Dr. Revolt that paid homage to Marvin Gaye's 1976 classic I Want You. It's hard to believe in the time of Puffy's heyday, Camp Lo had developed and delivered a style of hip hop that was not only fresh and creative, but also straight up dope. Flipping intricate rhyme styles over some of Rap's finer beats, the fact that Camp Lo got main stream radio play and love from big time club DJ's is a testament to the essence of what hip hop was once about: raw talent and originality! Remastered from the original tapes and pressed on loud double vinyl."

GALL, FRANCE France Gall LP
Twitchin' Beat Records present a reissue of France Gall's self-titled debut album, originally released in 1964. Gall was the shooting star of French pop in the '60s with tunes like the very famous "Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son" and a comeback hit in the late '80s, "Ella Elle L'a". She was a beautiful girl with brown eyes and blonde hair when she hit the scene aged 17 in 1964, and her rise to fame and stardom happened in an amazing pace. This is France Gall's debut album, released in 1964 along with a couple of Rolling Stones, Hollies and Beatles albums and it could compete with all these heavy weights of that era. France Gall contains a nifty mix of songs that present elements of chanson, soul and heartache ballad, vocal jazz and contemporary pop. "Jazz Á Go-Go" for example is such a rather haunting vocal jazz track with a wicked saxophone solo and on the other hand "Les Rubans Et La Fleur" comes as a beautiful pop/beat song with melodies ranging between happy and thoughtfully folky, as if some chanson and classic English folksong have been mixed up with a playful beat background. "Pense À Moi" owes much to cool jazz hero Dave Brubeck and his 5/4 rhythms and piano block chords of the "Take Five" anthem. A beautiful French pop album that emanates an angelic innocence that pop music had actually lost by that time with plenty of emotional depth to be found here, but Gall's innocence just keeps it all together. Happy songs, dark songs, dramatic melodies - her early works were a bit more serious and cool than later in the '60s when she adopted a full, but tame, chanson pop sound. The melancholic ballad "J'entends Cette Musique" has an utterly sad but hopeful melody. For fans of '60s female fronted pop music stuck in between the more adventurous mid '60s style and '50s heartbreak songs, France Gall's debut is a must have.

UGLY THINGS #42 MAG
"Two fantastic bands take pride of place on the cover this issue. The Yardbirds, one of the most innovative groups of the '60s, are re-examined via a fascinating interview with Paul Samwell-Smith, the band's bass player, musical arranger, and one of their key songwriters. The Weirdos were at the epicenter of the Los Angeles punk scene in the late 1970s, but their story has never been covered before with any depth or detail. We rectify that this issue with an epic feature story loaded with wild and weird photos. Also in the spotlight are London '60s mods The Carnaby and The Game, Syracuse budget rock heroes The Penetrators, Texas garage-punks The Wig, Berkeley power pop icon J.D. Buhl, late '60s Manchester long-hairs Greasy Bear, and frilly-shirted pop-psych purveyors Fortes Mentum. Also, the story of Custom Fidelity Records, a riveting journey behind the scenes of the vanity record pressing industry in its mid-century heyday. Not to forget the latest installment in Cyril Jordan's ongoing Flamin' Groovies saga, and our extensive review sections, the ultimate consumers' guide to all the latest vinyl and CD reissues and rock'n'roll-related books."

AETHENOR Hazel CD
"Hazel is the fifth record from Æthenor, the group of eclectic travelers that includes Stephen O'Malley (SunnO))), KTL), Daniel O'Sullivan (Ulver, This is Not This Heat, Grumbling Fur, etc.), Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver), and Steve Noble (Brötzmann Trio, N.E.W.) Together they bring their considerable pedigrees into play with unexpected and original results. Contradicting expectations of a massive blow-out of sound, everyone plays with remarkable, effective restraint. Atmospheric and layered, this latest release features bits and pieces of identifiable rock-moves peeking out from under a thick blanket of hard-to-identify drift. Based on live recordings made on a lengthy tour of Italy in 2010, Hazel has been extensively edited and supplemented, but without losing the elemental sound of a group playing live together. Though there's plenty of weird ambient sound to be heard, this isn't a sound- effects/'pedalboard' record. Like the previous En Form for Bla, Noble's drums anchor the music with spare and considered playing, sometimes lashing out with abstract punctuation, and other times laying out a Can-like groove. O'Malley's guitar is also restrained, providing a bed for O'Sullivan's constantly morphing Rhodes, synths and electronic effects. Kristoffer Rygg contributes a rousing vocal incantation to 'Ermanna' and peppers the mix with ghostly modular details. Æthenor's catalog continues to be not like anything else out there right now. Sleeve designed by Stephen O'Malley."

CRYSTAL MYSLAJEK Circadia LP
"Captured in the depth of a Minnesota winter in a room equipped with two grand pianos, Crystal Myslajek produced the six track opus that is Circadia. Circadia is a contemplative, intuitive and luminous album of slowly unfurling arrangements for piano, voice, bass, drums and modular synthesizer. Myslajek (formerly of ethereal art-rock trio Brute Heart) is a Minneapolis-based performer and composer. Her compositions blend haunting vocals with minimalist classical piano, punctuated by bowed and plucked double bass, and sparse percussion. The sweeps and tones of a modular synthesizer articulates the colors already present in this modern achievement of musical production. Featuring Liz Draper (double bass), Chris Hepola (percussion and piano), and John Marks (modular synthesizer)."

"When I set out to make a song, I let the textures and rhythms dictate what it should become, rather than pursuing a specific genre or style."
