ANDERSON, JOEY The Vase 12"
New Jersey house mystic Joey Anderson returns to Avenue 66 after inaugurating the Acid Test imprint in 2013 with the modern psych-dance masterpiece Above The Cherry Moon. Here, Anderson's "If One Cares, They Act Different" works with a lead that could score an unsettling '80s horror flick before eventually introducing Anderson's signature quicksilver synths and abstract, jacking drum patterns. "Peace There" takes the listener far out with square-wave basslines and raspy hats. On "The Vase," Anderson reins things in, but even his bittersweet, relatively straight-head deep house tracks present an odd paradox.

LIMINANAS, THE Garden Of Love (Andrew Weatherall Remix) 12"
Following Malamore (2016), French duo The Limiñanas have trusted London DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall to remix "Garden Of Love" featuring Peter Hook. "When we released Je Ne Suis Pas Très Drogue in 2009, Andrew played it in his radio show in London. Then Bernie Fabre contacted me because Andrew wanted us to play in his festival De La City A La Cité in Carcassone. When we worked with Peter Hook, the idea of a maxi with one or two remixes made sense." -- Lionel Limiñana.

VA Cosmic Machine The Sequel: A Voyage Across French Cosmic & Electronic Avantgarde (70s-80s) (Standard Gatefold) 2LP+CD
This sequel to the acclaimed Cosmic Machine compilation released in 2013 is another fantastic journey through time and space. At the time musicians were trying to capture the sounds of meteorites entering the terrestrial atmosphere thanks to machines developed by NASA engineers, a new generation of analog synthesizers enabled electronic music composers to take over the charts. It seemed the machines were definitely made to serve a radical avant-garde, and many years later, we're glad to be able to listen with this perspective, and most of all -- to dance to it. While moving your feet to Cosmic Machine The Sequel, you might identify Francis Lay, recognized as one of the best music composers in France, as well as Rosebud, who had the audacity to remix the main theme from the movie More, created by Pink Floyd. You'll also find "Les Soucoupes Volantes Vertes" from Heldon, the band led by electronic music visionary Richard Pinhas. Pascal Comelade, a friend of his, and worthy heir of the American minimalism also appears on this record, with a cold electronic sound called "Mouvement Décomposé d'Un Coup de Marteau." Arpadys, for their part, make an appearance with a more tribal and spatial track that will make you turn the volume up. Christophe's "Harp Odyssey," a track influenced by his collaborations with electronic master Jean-Michel Jarre. The father of electroacoustic music, Pierre Schaeffer used to head the Group of Musical Researches, a real musical laboratory in which both artists have worked together, trying to experiment with new sounds. Finally, the legendary "Pop Corn" instrumental from Anarchic System will bring some nice memories to the surface. Each and every one of the artists present on this compilation has dreamt of getting his one-way ticket to the moon. Some of them have managed to tread upon the land of our satellite, but one thing is for sure: all have participated in the spatial conquest on board of the Cosmic Machine. You have the right to get on it. Also includes tracks by Stereo, Queen Samantha, Nicolas Peyrac, Roger Roger, Video Liszt, Pierre Porte, Grand Prix, The Peppers, Joel Fajerman & Jan Yrssen, Moon Birds, Araxis, Georges Rodi, and Michel Magne.

CURRAN, ALVIN Natural History LP
Black Truffle present the first-ever vinyl issue of Alvin Curran's Natural History, originally released on cassette by Edition Giannozzo Berlin in 1983. A founding member of the radical electronic improvising group Musica Elettronica Viva, since the early 1970s Curran has developed an idiosyncratic body of solo work that occupies a unique position in the post-Cageian experimental tradition. Singularly undogmatic, Curran's work takes the Cageian experience as the starting point for a radical openness to all forms of music and sound. Refusing to abstract music from its human functions, his work draws on existing musical genres, cutting-edge electronics and environmental recordings to craft compositions that mimic the hazy texture of everyday life, moving from the abstract to the referential, from the observational to the emotive, from the structured to the random. As he reflects in the liner notes written especially for this edition: "This infinite stream of sound became my life and my music all at once". Curran's other classic solo works of the 1970s and 1980s, such as Songs and Views of the Magnetic Garden (1975) and Canti Illuminati (1982) are elaborate collages that combine keyboard and voice improvisation and composition with field-recorded environments. Natural History consists entirely of field recordings from Curran's archive, arranged as a series of "still lifes", sometimes layered, but without any additional processing. Sounds recorded over the course of nearly twenty years, at Curran's home in Rome or while traveling: constructions sites, insects, children's toys, a piano being tuned, foghorns, familiar to admirers of Curran masterful Maritime Rites (2004), lovemaking, a singing neighbor. It is, as Curran says, an attempt to "put the sound of the entire world on a cassette tape". Heard against the backdrop of the increasing prevalence of field recordings in contemporary music over the last few years, Natural History is like a refreshing breeze, suffused with the joy of discovery. Gatefold sleeve with liner notes and photos by Alvin Curran and design by Stephen O'Malley. Vinyl cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates.

SANO Los Muchachos EP 12"
Los Muchachos from Sano of Colombia is both tropical and industrial. The title track is an underground jam of pure dark soul (or also deep punk) from a parallel world. Its melancholia though is not romantic and introspective but rhythmical and inevitable. "La Grúa" is the sound of the moving crane outside Sano's flat, like an endless scream of a dying beast. Featuring DJH, it is darkly distorted and built on a fat beat that swings elegantly like the smooth walk of a big cat. Toulouse Low Trax's "Interview Remix" is slow and hypnotic, creating a much darker evolving atmosphere.

LIMINANAS, THE The Woods/The Inventor 7"
Two brand new and exclusive tracks by The Limiñanas. Getting their start in October of 2009, The Limiñanas are the brainchild of Lio and Marie Limiñana. Beginning as a home studio project the duo spent much time flipping through John Barry and Ennio Morricone LPs and books on Victorian era architecture, watching Noir films, and basking in the sun of Southern France seeking inspiration. It's been noted that there are traces of Serge Gainsbourg, Beck, Stereolab, gospel, guitar fuzz freak-outs, and Nuggets-era stompers in the Limiñanas music. All of which may be true, but Limiñanas's sound is irreverent and singular.

MOORE, RUDY RAY Dolemite For President LP
"You might think that a certain bad-hair-having, shit-talking presidential candidate is obnoxious, but there's one man who would definitely be more dangerous in the White House: Dolemite. Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to reissue this hilarious and downright filthy album to celebrate the mud-slinging we'll all be experiencing this fall. And, of course, to remind the world of Rudy Ray Moore's unique comedic genius. Originally released in 1972 in the middle of the disaster now known as the Nixon Years, the album is filled to the brim with Moore's bawdy but debatably insightful takes on politics, sex and American society, funneled through the lens of his most famous persona, Dolemite. As it warns on the cover: 'Rated XXX: For Adults Only.' And they aren't kidding. The album's lengthy first cut, 'Campaign Speech,' is worth the price of admission alone. Ranting for ten minutes straight, Moore lets it all hang out, with every bit of profanity he can muster. It's certainly interesting to hear some of his words more than four decades later. 'I'm not promising you a chicken in every pot,' he bellows, in his trademark raspy scowl. 'I'm not promising you a God-damn thing. If I am elected, I promise to legalize prostitution, marijuana, stealing, and every other motherfuckin' thing you want to do.' Making fun of Nixon, George McGovern and Spiro Agnew, he continues, 'We're still waiting for that 40 acres and that motherfucking mule.' Towards the end, he brings forth a metaphor that, interestingly, would come true in the year of Moore's passing, 2008: 'The next thing I'ma do, I'm gonna move on my first act. I'm gonna get me 2,000 raggedy-ass painters, and paint the motherfucking White House black!' The rest of the album's 13 songs are equally loud, offensive, funny and even -- when the audience isn't expecting it -- serious. With a live soul group grooving behind him and a live audience yelling support along the way, he gives his fans what they want on cuts like 'Dance Of The Freaks,' 'Long Island Duck,' 'Farting Contest' and 'Chester & Mr. Dillon.' Released on black vinyl with its eye-catching original front and back artwork, it's a great way to relive the comedic bravery and brashness of a truly unique man, Rudy Ray Moore."

MY DISCO Regis & Lustmord Remixes 12"
Unfeasibly tight Aussie post-punk trio, My Disco take a proper pasting from Regis and Lustmord in remixes of "Our Decade" and "1991" from the Severe (2015) LP. Severe was issued to underground acclaim, providing a shocking reminder of the trio's minimalist tension and vitality. Taking on "Our Decade", Regis masterfully eviscerates the original's drawling gothic vox in favor of white hot sheets of processed, coruscating guitar whilst the groove is brought right up front. Lustmord's take on "1991" is a gravely greyscale and super-wide overhaul perfused with curdled vocals and stark drums, like something out of a Scott Walker storyboard.

NOT WAVING Redacted LP
With the first vinyl edition of Not Waving's absorbingly raw sophomore solo LP Redacted (2013), Alessio Natalizia reminds fans of his nascent psychedelic side in light of his lucid, "schizo" deviations on the Animals album for Diagonal (DIAG 025CD/LP, 2016). While there's a mutual sense of technoid momentum to both albums, Redacted is a far gauzier, free-form and sensual beast; one richly steeped in proto/post-club atmospheres and allowing his imagination to run away with itself. Conceptually, Redacted pursues the "classified" themes of his remote viewing-inspired Umwelt LP (2013) into even murkier departments, drawing subtle parallels between the cold war atmospheres that birthed original post punk, industrial and proto-techno, and the current pallor of socio-political unrest. Omitting the original tape's expansive closer for the sake of a single LP cut, this vinyl version plays out like an alternative soundtrack to scenes in the overgrown, radioactive zones of Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979), using an anachronistic palette of analog machinery to emphasize a sense of fluid, shimmering motion and out-of-place-and-timelessness that genuinely goes straight to the head with trippy effect. Swampy, slow techno horror themes vacillate with decayed pastoral panoramas and windows of synthetic optimism, both lush and disquietingly needling, using dissonance and sweeps of hazy noise to ultimately spell out a foreboding but dreamlike sort of electronic subterfuge and suspense that resonates with the nostalgic Stranger Things (2016) score as much as Leyland Kirby's Intrigue & Stuff series. Redacted was originally issued in edition of 100 gold tapes in 2013. Newly remastered for vinyl by Matt Colton at Alchemy. RIYL: Pye Corner Audio, John Carpenter, Edward Artemiev. Edition of 500.

JUSTICE Cross 2LP
2016 repress. Justice's highly-acclaimed debut album from 2007. French-only vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve. Retreating to their underground post-nuclear shelter/studio, French duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay worked on their first album as if their lives depended on it. The result is a mind-fuck of an album that proves that Justice's unique talent is to be found where least expected. Take for example "Let There Be Light" and its strident, angry electro, driven by a jabbing bassline; "D.A.N.C.E," a pure piece of vicious house sung innocently by a choir of children; "Newjack," a funky parody of the opulent times of the French Touch; "Phantom," taking over where "Waters Of Nazareth" left off to drift towards "Phantom Pt. II" and its head-swirling disco violins; "Valentine," an erotic, melancholic nursery rhyme, like a tribute to Vladimir Cosma and "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy," a pure electro-funk track where the sexy Uffie plays more than ever the cheeky Lolita. Justice have thrown established rules out the window (the notion of good and bad taste, the thin line between underground and pop music, the pigeon hole labeling between rock and electro, etc.) with a fantastic talent for synthesizing and mixing their influences with total candor, be it the cosmic disco of Larry Levan or Vladimir Cosma's panty-wetting romantics, Camel's prog rock or the anxious theme of Goblin for Dario Argento, to the flashy funk of the Brothers Johnson or "ABC" by the Jackson 5. Cross isn't a collection of random dancefloor singles. Cross is for listening at home or in clubs. Cross is a link between pop at its purest and experimental music. Cross brings together hardcore elements and cheese. Cross makes the Goths link arms with the rave kids. A generational manifest, ideally positioned on the side of the dancefloor, Cross, insolent with youth, is a testimony that the French electro scene is healthier than ever.

PHONPHIBUN, PHAIRIN Lam Klom Thung: Essential Phairin Phonphibun CD
Something special happens when a talented, versatile singer teams up with a visionary, attentive, and focused producer. This remarkable collection is the cream of such a collaboration, featuring vocalist Phairin Phonphibun and her late-'70s and early-'80s work with Thai studio legend Surin Paksiri. These ten songs showcase Phonphibun's mastery of a range of Isan musical styles, always skilled, always singular, and always soulful. Her spirit-lifting, authentic molam voice is honored here by the work of the still-active production genius Paksiri, who realizes that as wonderful as a beautiful voice is, when that voice is set, gem-like, in a fitting and inspiring musical environment, the results are timeless. (N.B. "Mo" is an artist and "lam" is a kind of performance art in which the artist tells a story using tonal inflections. In other words, the term "molam" refers to both the singer and art form. Molam pieces are not, strictly speaking, "songs.") All of these songs were originally released as 7" records on Paksiri's own label, before the cassette era devolved, for lesser talents, into a production line of sound-alikes. Every song has a thoughtful, unique arrangement, with a style and sensibility that separates them from other molam and luk thung of every era. In this sense, Paksiri can be ranked along with renowned auteur producers of the Western musical world, with his attention to detail and keen musical sense evident on every track, retaining an undeniable Thai essence while introducing disco, soul, and rock elements. A highlight here is the title-tune, one of Phomphibun's signature songs, featured in the 1978 film Mon Rak Menam Mun; it so impressed Thai show-biz big boss Waiphot Phetsuphan that he asked Paksiri to produce his own cover version. Selection, liner notes, and cover art by Soi 48. Includes 20-page booklet with English liner notes and lyrics.

FROM SCRATCH Five Rhythm Works CD
Beginning in 1974 and based in New Zealand, the sound-performance group From Scratch used an evolving array of percussion instruments -- including found and repurposed objects as well as custom-made percussion instruments -- to create a distinctive rhythmic music, texturally rich and tonally sumptuous. The music has a sophisticated, fluid, and intelligent polyrhythmic drive and prominently features pitched percussion, using microtunings and just intonation in tightly structured pieces that evolve and mutate around intricately interlocking melodic and rhythmic elements. Given their Pacific identity, one can find similarities with a number of Asian Pacific musics; their music will appeal to open-eared listeners interested in such musics, and it will also intrigue admirers of the early work of Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Formed by Phil Dadson upon his return to New Zealand following his late-'60s involvement in the UK with Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra, Auckland's From Scratch embraced an egalitarian ethic, focusing on cooperation, integration, and the union of opposites. These principles are clearly heard in the music here, with all the players interlocking and with the music exploring and exploding the polarities of melody/rhythm, local/global, group/individual, minimal/maximal. These four tracks, ranging from 1974 to 1982, are propulsive and yet serene; percussive and yet sweetly tonal; and toe-tappingly alert, forming an immersive and distinctive soundworld. All tracks here are newly remastered from the original master tapes; "Passage" was the group's first recording and is previously unissued. Includes 20-page booklet containing English liner notes by Andrew Clifford and rare photos.

ALVARO Mums Milk Not Powder LP
"First vinyl reissue of the second LP released by Alavaro Pena originally released in 1979 following the runaway success of his debut album, Drinkin My Own Sperm (FTR 174LP, 1977). Although recorded in Germany, Alvaro again employed his regular drummer, Antonio Narvaez, with a few assists on the second side from Hilde Schneider, Alvaro's then-wife. The first side was recorded by a German engineer, Olaf Dung, who carried his rig around with him in his briefcase. How this exactly worked is unclear, but the music is great and includes some of Alvaro's most classically catchy tunes. Lili Dwight is a long-time fan of 'Honey,' which she often sings aloud at apiary gatherings. Ted Lee does the same when crashing La Leche League outings to the strains of 'Mums Milk Not Powder.' And so on. Alvaro's second album is just the sort of thing you'll be happy to use for a personal soundtrack, regardless of your politics or trajectory. Apparently, however, Alvaro and Mr. Dung had a falling out before the album's second side was completed, which meant there are some ad hoc compositions added to finish out the record. Primary among these are 'Brown Loaf,' something of a baking tutorial conducted whilst Drinkin My Own Sperm plays on a nearby radio, and 'Washindishes,' which is one of the few tracks to ever document extended nose flute improvisations." -- Byron Coley, 2016. "Alvaro rides again." -- Sounds, London, 1980. "A fabulous collection of musicals and unmusicals, includes a recipe." -- Time Out, London, 1980. Another classic piece of the mysterious puzzle that is Alvaro. Miss it at your own extreme personal peril. Edition of 400.

MX-80 SOUND So Funny LP
"Depending on how you count, So Funny is either the ninth or tenth album, MX-80 Sound has released. Regardless, it's their first LP since the classic Crowd Control back in 1981, and it's a pretty goddamn amazing spin. The core of the band -- Bruce Anderson, Dale Sophiea and Rich Stim -- has been more or less stable for the better part of the last four decades, despite the fact they've never had any real commercial success. They've all pursued various different paths during that time, but they've also continued the bizarre communal creation process that began back in Bloomington Indiana in 1974, and was codified once they relocated to the Bay Area in the late '70s. Bruce's guitar lines may have 'matured' a bit, drawing back a tad from the savage blunderbuss angularity that drove MX's early work. Similarly, Rich's vocals and lyrics may have tamped down some of the relentless wise-ass pith of their first few records. But Dale's bass still pushes its persistent prog program, with melodic and rhythmic highlighting that recalls Oréjon's work on Clear Spot (1972). Meanwhile, new drummer, Nico Sophiea has a lovely way of playing straight rock fills, and guitarist Jim Hrabetin (who'd already played on some MX related sessions) adds nice density and edge. Old drummer Mark Weinstein even turns up to do vocals on 'No Nukes,' which is one of the songs on here so immediately identifiable as MX-80 Sound that it's wild. The way the band balances riff progression, vocal miniaturization and avant rock textural sound remains as unique and beautiful as ever. Meaning, So Funny is yet another excellent MX-80 Sound album. In 2016, how fucking cool is that?" -- Byron Coley, 2016.

MARS Mars Archives Volume Two: 11000 Volts to Tunnel LP
"The second amazing volume (of three), compiled by Mark Cunningham after culling every known live tape of Mars, documents the band in its first fully-matured form. Recorded at CBGB and Max's in the early months of 1978, this captures the sound of Mars around the time their first single, '3E/11000 Volts,' was released by the French Rebel label (a precursor of ZE). They're still playing their early songs, and working out the material that would be on No New York (LR 102CD/LP). Two of the tracks ('Cairo' and 'RTMT') were never released in any form back in the day, and the whole album surges along like one of the weirdest rock rides anybody has ever imagined. There are still small tendrils of the more formal approach Mars took in their earliest days, but the function of the material is on its way to becoming utterly alien. Even though I saw the band around this time, the incredible strangeness of their approach is astonishing. Words fail me. No one else has ever created anything quite like the wall of sound they managed. On the second side, as an added bonus, the audience source tape is full of hooting and hollering by people like Lydia Lunch, Bradley Field, Kristian Hoffman, and various other reprobates with whom they were sharing rehearsal space at the time. Package looks great, too. Grainy, just the way it should be. Has an insert with brief notes by Mark, a couple of pics and handwritten lyrics that read better than I'd ever imagined them to be. Essential stuff." -- Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 500.

BLOOD QUARTET Deep Red LP
"Debut LP, following a cassette, by Mark Cunningham's latest unit, Blood Quartet. Based in Barcelona, the mostly-instrumental band plays insanely great avant garde rock music, with Mark's electro-Miles trumpet spread across the top like brass icing. Cunningham has been based in Spain for many years now, and his groups there (Raeo, Bestia Ferida, etc.) have been excellent, but Blood Quartet seems like the apex of a musical quest he started with Don King, following the dissolution of his legendary NYC band, Mars. The music they play has a similar cinematic scope to the material Mark composed for his 1997 solo album, Blood River Dusk (FTR 098LP). But where that album created an ominous soundtrack for living, Blood Quartet makes an explosive syncretic fusion. Angular no wave guitar lines weave through bass-heavy rhythms, and Mark's trumpet achieves something akin to what Chet Baker might have done if he'd flipped out and gotten into the French acid scene in '68. Light, strangely wound tones that really don't sound like anyone else I can name. Candid Coll's post-tongue vocals, and the synth work by both Kike Bela and Lluis Rueda completely flesh everything out in a spectacular way. The music on Deep Red starts off sounding subtle, but it grows in power with every spin, and will eventually suck you down into its magnificent vortex. Bitchen." -- Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 500.

NEGATIVE ONE -1 7"
Thirteen tracks of skink-voiced post-core burl from the sloppiest pits of Boston's Fuck-Curtis scene. Angela Sawyer handles vocals as though she's imagining herself as a squirrel in the grips of a cartoon bear. Bugs & Rats's brilliant guitarist, Shawnie Brando, pulls lightning repeat-o riffs out of his pocket. Bassist Sam Potrykus and drummer Nick Neuburg set their dials to pummel, and motor away. The lyrics (as printed on an enclosed sheet) are like an insane parody of hardcore, and the music eventually achieves a kind of rumble that is very difficult to ignore.

UBX127's Constant Permutation Part 2 picks up where Part 1 left off, providing another batch of deadly club weapons. The beat-less "Explorations" sends out eerie signals deep into outer space. The ricocheting and arpeggiated synths of "Felt" would aptly soundtrack the decent of alien attack ships on our planet. "Örnsberg" seems to echo with the cries of long lost souls that have been trapped eternally inside its icy caverns. "Cyclic Soundscape" is a masterclass in immersive sound design, a constant ebb and flow of layers.

MONADH Muara LP
Everyone's looking for inner peace of some kind - even warmongers. As most intelligent people know, music is one of the most effective ways to achieve that blessed, blissed state. Muara, the debut album by Seattle producer Monadh (Jake Muir) offers yet more crucial aid in the war on stress. Muara (Javanese for "estuary") is an ambient album in the purest, chillest meaning of the term. Its seven tracks are awash in aquatic signifiers and textures? each one is a rejuvenating dip in healing, icy waters. This doesn't mean Muara should be filed in new age sections of record shops (not that there's anything wrong with that). Rather, what the album most resembles is the ambient output of artists like Biosphere, Loscil and The Sight Below - musicians who uncannily make the listener warm to cold tones. "The way I make music is really stream of consciousness," Muir says. "My friend calls it 'slow improv.' I happened to be watching a lot of older Japanese cinema, especially samurai stuff, from the '50s to the '70s while making the album." Natural habitats also played a significant role. Muir notes, "My favorite music is informed by mood and place." This deep into the 21st century, it's not easy to create ambient music that sounds vital and untainted by hackneyed tropes. Monadh succeeds in this difficult task, through a combination of his field recordings from the Pacific Northwest and meticulously chosen samples mostly lifted and pitch-shifted from library records of a pastoral and romantic bent. He also cites Andrew Pekler's Sentimental Favourites (2011) and Biosphere's Shenzhou (2011) as inspirations. Right from the first track, "Ammophilia," the listener can feel tensions dissolve as Monadh coaxes a gentle whirlpool of dark blue drones with an undertow of poignant melody swirled into the mix with utmost subtlety. "Calanque" seems to be emerging from a fathomless cave, like a palliative gas, a calming ether. It's the chillest of chillout cuts, inducing a peace beyond peace. And so it goes throughout Muara, with slight variations in intensities and moods, but overall maintaining a watery tonal float on which listeners can glide into mentally stimulating relaxation. By the time the final track "Convection" surfaces, the listener feels perfectly centered. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Artwork by Chloe Harris. 180 gram vinyl. Reverse board jacket. Includes download code.

VA Holger Bundle #3 3x12"
Holger Bundle #3 features three EPs from the label in a tote bag with a screen-printed logo - grey on grey. From Vai's hazy ambient/electronica Son of Idaia (HOLGER 008EP, 2015) to Simon12345 & The Lazer Twins's wild combination of fuzzy techno-not-techno with quiet zero-gravity moments Cheveux Propres, Cheveux Gras (HOLGER 009EP, 2016), rounded out by Chino's remarkably club-friendly acid/electro Hiss (HOLGER 010EP, 2016). Holger slowly seems to make its way back into dance territory, without losing its lust for experimentation. This series of EPs can be seen as a transitional one, also in a visual sense, introducing a new style of artwork by Lukas Mehling. Taking cues from previous works, Mehling also develops a more futuristic and loose line of design.

VATICAN SHADOW Media In The Service Of Terror LP
Dominick Fernow laces up his Vatican Shadow boots for the project's first set of drills since 2014 and one of its finest ever transmissions, trampling in the wake of his fierce new Prurient record, Unknown Rains (2016), for Hospital Productions. Reflecting on a world much unchanged, even intensified since his last dispatch, Media In The Service Of Terror works classic Vatican Shadow signatures, measured with increased momentum and propulsive energy, divided into seven parts and imbued with that dramatic melodic arrangements that works beyond the club. Stepping farther away from the floor, he's in scowling, contemplative form with "Ziad Jarrah Studied Mathematics" and at his best when working between spheres, as with the industrial reggaeton roil of "Take Vows" in both its versions, and particularly the pensile atmosphere of "Interrogation Mosaic". One of the best Vatican Shadow drops, bar none. Originally released as a limited cassette in June of 2016, this is Media In The Service Of Terror's first vinyl edition. Features new artwork. "Police & Snitch" is somewhere between EBM and disco, driven by a hypnotic, groovy analog bassline with warm percussion sounds. "Canopy" follows a slowly ascending groove, as synths and wavy hooks further the track into deep tech territory. Myles Sergé remixes "Reject", stripping down its embellishing elements and shifting focus towards the bassline. MADLIB Medicine Show: The Brick 13CD Box
"Madlib Medicine Show is a music series the producer began in late 2009 as the official launch of his label Madlib Invazion. The original idea was simple: 12 releases, one per month, alternating between original works and mixtapes spanning different genres. It took a little longer than planned to hit number 12 -- so a bonus, No. 13 was added to the mix. Now that the individual CD offerings are increasingly hard to locate, the Madlib Invazion crew has decide to collect the entire series into a single release. We call this collection Medicine Show: The Brick. With The Brick, you get it all: Medicine Show No. 1: Before The Verdict - hip hop vocal album feat. Guilty Simpson; Medicine Show No. 2: Flight To Brazil - 80 minutes of Brazilian psych, folk and jazz; Medicine Show No. 3: Beat Konducta In Africa - hip hop beats inspired by and based on obscure & independent African vinyl gems; Medicine Show No. 4: 420 Chalice All-Stars - all Jamaican sounds, 80 minutes, complete with Los Angeles medicinal marijuana guide; Medicine Show No. 5: History Of The Loop Digga - Madlib's early years, 1990-2000, from beat cassettes produced for local rap crew Crate Digga's Palace; Medicine Show No. 6: The Brain Wreck Show - psych-prog-avante- freak-out-funk rock; Medicine Show No. 7: High Jazz - all new Madlib productions from his collective of jazz groups and musicians known as Yesterdays Universe; Medicine Show No. 8: Advanced Jazz - a jazz music course with no grades, lecturer or tests - just a room of dusty jazz vinyl and Madlib at the turntable; Medicine Show No. 9: Channel 85 Presents Nittyville - hip-hop album feat. Frank Nitt; Medicine Show No. 10: Black Soul - the Disco era, 80 mins, mixed by Madlib; Medicine Show No. 11: Low Budget High Fi - hip hop of dirty demos produced by Madlib, with Oh No, Karriem Riggins, MED, Strong Arm Steady, AG, Guilty Simpson, J. Rocc and Jaylib; Medicine Show No. 12: Raw Medicine (Madlib Remixes) - part mixtape, part beat tape, featuring a host of un-suspecting collaborators that run the gamut from thugs, street poets, star emcees and underdogs - 60 minute with 30+ tracks; and of course Medicine Show No. 13: Black Tape - the bonus Medicine Show and sequel to #12. GRAVEOLA Camaleao Borboleta CD
Graveola's third album Camaleão Borboleta is fired with socially conscious lyrics concerning the power of the internet, native Brazilian-Indian struggles and issues around marijuana legalization. Graveola's unique brand of alt-pop sees tropicalia, samba, "rock Brasileira" and Brazilian folk rhythms cannibalize international genres to create strange hybrids they've labelled "psychedelic maracatu", "shamanic funaná", "weird salsa", "schizo-rock-fake-reggae" and "melancholic internet love ballad" - all examples of Graveola's "carnival cannibalism" approach to making music. Oddball arrangements recall Os Mutantes in their prime with naïve melodies, a hazy sensibility and Brazilian folk rhythms giving their music a distinctly Brazilian take on indie that ranks them as torchbearers of the new alt-tropical movement in South America, alongside acts such as Meridian Brothers and Juana Molina. The band has been heavily involved in recent "occupations" of government buildings against what they consider a coup in Brazil. Album opener "Maquinário" is a "psychedelic maracatu" (a rhythm from the north of Brazil) and a song about personal transformation where airplanes ask butterflies for the wind that makes them fly and vice versa. "Índio Maracanã" is a "shamanic funaná" (a Cape Verdean rhythm) inspired by the native Brazilian Indians who occupied the former native Indian museum in Rio in 2014 to try and prevent it being demolished in the lead-up to the World Cup. The group are joined by Samuel Rosa (Skank) on "Talismã", where the narrator lists various symbols that he encounters on a journey to personal freedom. "Tempero Segredo" is José Luis Braga's "tribute to all the herbs that increase levels of awareness". José also wrote "Sem Sentido" which features a mix of rhythms popular from the north of Brazil such as frevo and bolero and talks about the enabling power the internet offers people. "Aurora", "Costi" and "Back in Bahia" were written by Brina. She describes "Aurora" as "a sexy-Latin arrocha (Bahian rhythm) that's a love letter to the Spanish sea with a chorus in 12/8" and "Costi" as "a tribute to my Spanish cousin's 90 year old socialist and feminist grandmother". With a nod to the Gilberto Gil, "Back in Bahia" is, according to Luiza, a "collapsed bossa" that features polyrhythms from the Argentinian music style chacarera. Recorded in the band's hometown of Belo Horizonte under guidance from legendary Brazilian producer Chico Neves (Céu, Lenine) the six-piece have deliver their most electric, compelling work to date, a decade since their formation.

GOTTSCHING, MANUEL E2-E4 (35th Anniversary Edition) CD
In celebration of the 2016 35th anniversary of the December 12, 1981, recording of Manuel Göttsching's legendary E2-E4, one of electronic music's most influential recordings, Göttsching's MG.ART label presents an official reissue, carefully overseen by the master himself. Includes six-page booklet with notes and pictures."As the story is sometimes told, Göttsching stopped in the studio for a couple of hours in 1981 and invented techno. E2-E4 is the most compelling argument that techno came from Germany-- more so than any single Kraftwerk album, anyway. The sleeve credits the former Ash Ra Tempel leader with 'guitar and electronics', but few could stretch that meager toolkit like Göttsching. Over a heavenly two-chord synth vamp and simple sequenced drum and bass, Göttsching played his guitar like a percussion instrument, creating music that defines the word 'hypnotic' over the sixty minutes ... A key piece in the electronic music puzzle that's been name-checked, reworked and expanded upon countless times." --Mark Richardson, Pitchfork

YONKERS, MICHAEL Fun Pack 4LP
After recording the album Micro-Miniature Love at Dove Studios in the fall of 1967, Michael Yonkers retreated to his tiny basement studio. Utilizing only a couple of tube-type reel-to-reel recorders, Yonkers used methods he describes as primitive forms of "sound on sound" or "sound with sound" to get multi-channel effects. In 1974, after taking out a loan and having his basement tapes mastered at Sound 80 in Minneapolis, Yonkers made the bold move of simultaneously releasing four separate LPs of music from four previous years of recording: Grimwood, Michael Lee Yonkers, Goodby Sunball and Borders Of My Mind (with Jim Woehrle). These records are now legendary. Reissues have appeared on Sub Pop, Drag City, Nero's Neptune, and S-S Records. The very first batch of these four LPs came back from the manufacturer with covers that had paste-on slicks which were cut in a slightly uneven fashion. Almost all of the shrink was ripped from the jackets. This provided enough irritation to cause Michael to demand the pressing plant re-do them all. He had a second pressing done, with shrink-wrapped new jackets containing new records. These records are long gone. But here's where it gets interesting. Michael kept around 100 or so of the least-off center jackets (with records, sans torn shrink) of all four titles and placed one of each in manilla envelopes. The intention was that they be sold as a set, sent out as promotional packages or simply given to friends. Michael even created a special paper bookmark (each individually initialed by hand and decorated with five Xeroxed photos of Michael) plus a separate 7" x 4" blowup insert of the Michael Yonkers logo to go with the sets. But with an additional 2000 new LP's to sell - and no distribution - a little less than half of these "fun packs" were dispensed with. The majority of these original sets ended up forgotten in Michael's various storage spaces for over 40 years. They were recently found... and here they are. In essence, these are the true original pressings. When they're gone, they're gone. (Note: many of the original manilla envelopes are a little ragged from being shuffled around over the many years, but the original contents and extras are as good as new.)

LEMAIRE, CHRISTOPHE Can't You Hear Me? 2LP
Double LP version. Download card included. "Globetrotter of parallel subcontinents and digger of rare, forgotten records, Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt tracks sounds from the dawn of time to the four corners of the world. On the other side of the globe, French designer Christophe Lemaire stays forward thinking and audacious in his choices: far from our deified present, he cultivates a love of timeless designs and mixed influences; a passion for iconoclastic music hidden in the dark corners of a global cultural industry. This extraordinary openness has been at the heart of their friendship since 2007. This second anthology celebrates their impressionist vision and explores garage rock from the 1970s, voicing the struggles of independence in Zambia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Can't You Hear Me comes from a track by charismatic Zamrock icon Paul Ngozi, a Lemaire favorite. Ngozi's title track sets the tone for a drastic selection of seventeen songs with rebellious undertones, riddled by an infectious groove, the forsaken writing about a forgotten chapter in the history of music. Ngozi, WITCH, Chrissy Zebby Tembo, Amanaz, Wells Fargo, Eye Q and the Funkees represent a generation fighting for their freedom, armed with fuzz guitars, symbolic objects of a new movement. They played in Fela's kingly shadow, were influenced by Hendrix's psychedelic solos, Jefferson Airplane's penetrating chords and Cream's repetitive melodies. The music of their colonial oppressors they reassembled and reinterpreted with pure energy, without nod to hymn or flag. A halo of cosmic design and pure lines, the cover for the anthology by Sanghon Kim transports us in this whirling odyssey in space and time while composer/producer Pilooski concludes the album with an edit of Witch's 'No Time,' an expression of the critical need to open up to new perspectives, new imaginations and to keep unearthing riches of our universal heritage. 'Through these tracks we can feel the communicative energy, this pure vitality, not only of Africa , but of youth and hope,' Lemaire states. 'And I find it quite universal and timeless. It is not about music as an industry, or as product, but music as a craft. And one can immediately recognized when music is created with heart and soul.'"

CYKLE Cykle LP
Out-Sider present a reissue of Cykle's self-titled album, originally released in 1969. Top-notch US garage/psychedelic album from 1969 with Vox organ, fuzzy guitars, snotty vocals and impressive songwriting and recording quality. Featuring all-time acid-punk classics such as "It's Her" and "Walkout Of My Mind". Cykle formed in 1968, North Carolina, when gifted musician and songwriter Jimmy Sossamon (previously in famous local band The Young Ones) heard a local group, the Glory Cykle. He was so impressed that he approached them about becoming their manager. The band - guitarists Ralph Stevens and Jeff Hardin, bassist Grady Pope, organist Rick Wilson, and drummer/vocalist Ken Allen - practiced at the studio Sossamon had built in his parent's garage, and by the end of the year, Sossamon took up the drummer's seat to free up Allen as lead vocalist. The band's name was shortened to Cykle and in early 1969 they began recording an album consisting entirely of Sossamon originals. The resultant eponymous LP was released later that year as a private pressing of 500 copies on the bands own Label Records. But despite the 1969 release date, Cykle sounds straight from the 1966/67 garage-punk-psychedelic book. Master tape sound. Includes and insert with detailed liner notes. LP version comes housed in an old-school style tip-on sleeve. "When the most popular garage bands of the day were moving further and further away from the genre's 'less is more' production ideal, Cykle offered a raw, authentic take on what garage rock was meant to sound like." -- Psychedelized.

D/P/I Composer 12"
LP version. D/P/I (Alex Gray) is a musician, DJ and visual artist from USA; he has made music under the alias of Deep Magic and as a part of various Sun Araw Trios, Duos and Quartets. Now, most of the time, he plays drums, guitar, or saxophone at home for his other half & two cats. Here he presents Composer. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D+M."Composer is an album of rhythms that, once started, eventually completed themselves without much input from the composer. The character of a rhythm can develop very simply/unconsciously with just a slightly different part of the hand hitting a drum, or the wrist getting tired, causing trembling and stuttering that further magnifies the rhythmic stability of the pattern and/or player. With electronics, it's different physically, as you are not 'hitting' anything, but the link to the subconscious/unconscious, remains analogous. Every adjustment to a single sound/pattern can reveal complexities that were not apparent when the sound/pattern started. A natural flow begins, similar to the development of complex accents via 'human error' of using an ordinary djembe or conga: as the composer begins to be entranced by the sound/pattern, with a midi-mapped set of physical knobs, controlling complex processes/effects - each effect/process assumes its own character for that, almost quantum-like, layer of improvisation - layer by layer, until the simple layers of sound/patterns have naturally developed into compositions that reflect the seeming-instability, excitement, and sadness in time, here referred to as a fixed, unmoving element in the 'universe', that our human software is intrinsically dependent on to interpret these rhythms and the rest of the material world. This album was fun, exciting and unpredictable until the day it was 'finished'. I hope this album encourages people to think for themselves. This isn't a 'techno', 'experimental', 'abstract', 'dance', 'IDM', or any 'genre' of album. I hope you know what I mean. I hope that music hasn't lost the quality of inter-being 'beyond categorization'. I also hope that, to a small extent, this album can act as a beacon of creativity for future generations, who are currently being completely saturated by marketing content for products and media that will do nothing but confuse and distract them." -- Alex Gray, July 2016.

GOLDMAN, VIVIEN Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982) LP
Repressed; LP version. There's a myth about music critics according to which they are frustrated wannabe performers. Evidence to the contrary: Vivien Goldman. The London-born, New York-based Goldman is one of the foremost chroniclers of the perfect storm of reggae, punk, hip hop, and Afrobeat, but between 1979 and 1982, she was also a working musician, creating songs that, years later, would be sampled by The Roots and Madlib. These rare girl grooves are now collected for the first time on Resolutionary, covering Goldman's first three musical formations; first as a member of experimental British new wavers The Flying Lizards, next as a solo artist with her single "Launderette" featuring post-punk luminaries, and then as half of the Parisian duo Chantage with Afro-Parisian chanteuse Eve Blouin. Goldman's eclectic musical crew included PiL's John Lydon, Keith Levene, and Bruce Smith; avant-gardists Steve Beresford and David Toop; The Raincoats' Vicky Aspinall; the mighty Robert Wyatt; Zaire's Jerry Malekani; Manu Dibango's guitarist; Viv Albertine, then of Goldman's good friends The Slits; and dubmaster Adrian Sherwood, who produced the majority of these tracks. Goldman sang in a lilting, clear-toned soprano honed during childhood. She began her singing career in the late '70s, doing backup with Neneh Cherry and Ari Up (The Slits) on Sherwood records by reggae artists including Prince Far I. Goldman was grooving to the innovations of dub. The contrast between Goldman's high, lilting tones and the deep rumble of the bass is a hallmark of all her work, giving a haunting frisson of sex and alienation to songs like The Flying Lizards' "The Window." Reggae had been her London soundtrack, but after moving to Paris in the early '80s, she absorbed music from Africa, an interplay audible in exultant Chantage tracks like "It's Only Money," a mix of steelpan, African soukous guitar, and sobbing Romani violin riding ferocious funk. As the 1990s began, Goldman moved to Manhattan and became New York University's "Punk Professor," teaching original courses on punk, Bob Marley, David Bowie, and Fela Kuti. But she never stopped singing and writing songs. Chicks on Speed released a later cut, "7 Days," on their 2006 Girl Monster compilation (COSR 033CD). Her house 12" records with artists including Berlin's Moritz von Oswald are compiled on LPs. Goldman has also co-written tracks with Massive Attack, Coldcut, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Luscious Jackson. Early in 2016, she performed dub readings onstage with Boston's Berklee Marley Ensemble. Her multimedia beat goes on.

S OLBRICHT ZZM EP 12"
Budapest scene lynchpin, S. Olbricht delivers a quartet of chiming ambient techno and woozy house tracks with ZZM EP. ZZM EP rolls deep into those lip-smacking, thizzing ends of the night with a key subtlety and firm-but-light touch. These tracks rank among S. Olbricht's most seductive and hypnagogic. From the Terence Dixon-like harmonic suspension systems of "137x3brk" and the ruddier rumble and flickering rim shots embedded in the chasmic "Ktyring" to the glowing chord filaments laced into the 110bpm slug, "J UC". The gracefully tilted techno elevation "F10a1" could easily be mistaken as the work of label boss Lee Gamble.

SHALABI/ALAN BISHOP & SAM SHALABI, SAM Mother Of All Sinners (Puppet On A String) LP
Unrock's Saraswati Series is mostly string orientated, zigzagging between the lines where underground and high-art performance overlap. Out jumps the first part of their actively anti-Western sub-series: Mother Of All Sinners, a part of the "Puppet on a String" twin albums. Osama Shalabi, a born Egyptian (best known for his work with Shalabi Effect & Land Of Kush), is an expert playing the oud. He's a traveler between the Eastern and Western worlds and long-time contributor to the Montreal scene. Sam - who spent the last few years home in Cairo - breathes his own sense of space and time through the epic "Tamara", an 18 minute long melodic, delightful improvisation. The other story, "Faith Of Our Fathers", starts in Agouza, Cairo, where Sam Shalabi and Alan Bishop spent some time jamming. They'd run free, lose form, find intensity, and wound up creating a contemporary version of oriental psychedelic free form. A mind-blowing, wild, never mellow Cairo night, now documented here. It's getting intense: A north-African sand storm. Mother Of All Sinners will be released as a one-time limited run pressing on 140 gram vinyl. It has an extra heavy deluxe cover and a solid printed inlay.
