BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Sun Ship 10"
"The Sun Ship" brings the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 40 years. The B-side, "Playtime," is exclusive to this release and was recorded in March 2016 in Berlin. The one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective is frontman Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe, who is joined on "Playtime" by Ryan Van Kriedt (slide guitar) and Dan Alliare (drums). Engineered by Anton Newcombe, Andrea Wright, and Ryan Van Kriedt. Produced by Anton Newcombe. Mastered by Shane "The Cutter" McEnhill at Finyl Tweek. Available on honey-colored vinyl. PSYCHIC TV Alienist LP
Angry Love Productions proudly announces the release of Alienist by Psychic TV. Alienist is the follow-up to 2014's highly acclaimed Snakes (OTTT 030LP) which in part, explored Genesis Breyer P-Orridge's foray into African Voudoun culture. Alienist in part explores drummer and Psychic TV's co-producer Edley ODowd's fascination of Psychic TV's longtime reinterpretation of contemporary rock classics. This time tackling "Jump Into The Fire" by the late Harry Nilsson as well as Genesis' teenage favorite "How Does It Feel To Feel" by '60s British psychedelic rockers The Creation. Original tracks include the haunting yet emotional "Looking For You" - an epic journey in which Genesis lets Lucifer himself know that his "time is over". A delightful fusion of dance grooves harking back to Psychic TV's acid house days and the band's current love of heavy psychedelic rock.

KIESLOWSKI/ZBIGNIEW PREISNER, KRZYSZTOF Three Colors: Blue LP+CD
Repressed. Zbigniew Preisner is a self-educated Polish film score composer who first won renown for his collaborations with influential Polish director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieslowski. As part of its reissue series focusing on Preisner's work with Kieslowski, Because Music presents a reissue of Preisner's score for Kieslowski's Three Colors: Blue (1993), the first film in Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy (BEC 5156047), preceding White (BEC 5156049) and Red (BEC 5156050). The trilogy is themed on the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity; according to Kieslowski, the subject of Blue is liberty, specifically emotional liberty, rather than its social or political meaning. Blue stars Benoît Régent and Juliette Binoche, and received universal acclaim upon its release. Preisner's soundtrack is performed by the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Silesian Philharmonic choir, and includes pieces credited to fictional composer Van den Budenmayer. Zbigniew Preisner has also worked with Jean Becker (on Élisa (1995), winner of the 1996 César Award for Best Music), Thomas Vinterberg (It's All About Love (2003)), and Claude Miller (Un secret (2007)). Repressed. Zbigniew Preisner is a self-educated Polish film score composer who first won renown for his collaborations with influential Polish director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieslowski. As part of its reissue series focusing on Preisner's work with Kieslowski, Because Music presents a reissue of Preisner's score for Kieslowski's Three Colors: White (1994), the second film in Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy (BEC 5156047), following Blue (BEC 5156048) and preceding Red (BEC 5156050). White stars Zbigniew Zamachowski and Julie Delpy, and has been interpreted as an anti-comedy, in parallel with Blue (1993) as an anti-tragedy and Red (1994) an anti-romance. Preisner's soundtrack is performed by the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Silesian Philharmonic choir. Zbigniew Preisner has also worked with Jean Becker (on Élisa (1995), winner of the 1996 César Award for Best Music), Thomas Vinterberg (It's All About Love (2003)), and Claude Miller (Un secret (2007)). PRINCE Lotus Flow3r 2LP/2CD
2016 repress. Originally released in 2009. For more than thirty years, Prince indefatigably attacked the bulwarks which separate funk, rock, pop and hip-hop. This is a deluxe gatefold release composed of two slabs of vinyl (Lotusflow3r and MPLSound also included on CDs) as well as a poster. "On LotusFlow3r Prince has a specific mission: showcasing his long-underrated guitar playing. Whether it's the spare funk of 'Wall of Berlin,' the metal grind of 'Dreamer' or the hazy cover of 'Crimson and Clover,' the music kicks into high gear when Prince starts soloing, delivering one epic face melter after another in a style halfway between David Gilmour's and Eddie Hazel's." EOMAC Bedouin Trax 2LP
"'Bedouin sent me samples of music from the Arab and Islamic worlds to use as source material for an EP. I was so inspired by the material I wrote over thirty tracks. My intention was to be true to its sonic qualities and resonances, but bring it stylistically into my own world of contemporary electronic music. I approached this in the spirit of cultural exchange, conscious of my privileges as a white western male able to work in this way -- only scratching the surface of another culture -- and wary of the implications of this kind of appropriation. But this was a project born of love and deep respect for the source material, the traditions, the religions, the art and the music of this part of the world. Bedouin Trax reflects all this. Unity. Togetherness. Exploring the darkness and light in humanity to find our similarities, to find a way to connect with all people, from all different cultures and backgrounds. Salem from Bedouin said that some of the Sufi songs he had sent were songs about love -- 'towards an entity of oneness'. This phrase informed the entire project.'"

"Dan Davies aka Ossia is a mainstay of the Bristol scene. He runs labels like Fuck Punk, No Corner and Peng Sound, and he's a member of Young Echo. His Blackest Ever Black debut triumphantly grafted the industrial experimentalism of Richard H Kirk onto West Country bass culture. This, his second Berceuse Heroique, goes deepest yet; pithier but more widescreen, with fresh touches of jungle and bashment to its dread spirituality. The dubs in particular are a bleak treat. Spiffily presented 180g vinyl, with a natty poster designed by Alex Digard, from the Tape Echo crew."

LADY WRAY Queen Alone CD
"Virginia-born singer/songwriter Nicole Wray has everything you'd want in a singer: an infectious Jackson-5-family-member flare, a range like Aretha's, and a church upbringing that's brought a pure, healing texture to her voice. But the struggle she's been through has made her more than a singer. Nicole Wray is an artist. When talking about Queen Alone, her first solo album in some time, Nicole explains, 'It's a reflection of my soul. It's who I am today.' And aptly so. Released on Brooklyn's Big Crown Records, Nicole is writing and singing songs about her life. And yet to even start to know her soul, you have to go back to the beginning. Growing up in Portsmouth was tough at times for Nicole. However, at the age of fifteen, life opened up quickly when Missy Elliot paid a visit to Nicole's family home to audition her on the spot. Missy was there on the rumored strength and quality of her voice. Instantly blowing her away, she signed and left with Missy that night. Two years later, at age 17, she had a hit gold single off a solid debut album (Make It Hot). Suddenly she was part of a team that included late '90s R&B and rap royalty: Missy, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Playa, Timbaland and Magoo. She made it, and fast. However, as rapidly as she achieved success, Nicole then found herself needing to re-make it. By late 2001, her time with Missy and company had run its course. They amicably parted ways and Nicole, once on top of the R&B world, was unsure of what was next. It was a very low, but important, point in her life. While her passion and talent propelled her forward?friends disappeared and her purpose seemed unclear. While neck-deep in this struggle, Damon Dash and Roc-A-Fella Records called. They signed an album deal and by 2004, in what was starting to be a pattern, just as things were looking up Roc-A-Fella suddenly (famously) split. Once again, industry factors beyond her control took charge. Like a recurring dream, Nicole found herself in a familiar situation. Having just been in the spotlight, and then again back living the 'real life'. In 2013, Nicole paired up with London vocalist Terri Walker and released the album Lady. Once again, Nicole was tested. Terri parted ways with the group to pursue her own projects shortly after the album's release - despite rave reviews and upcoming travel dates. Fast forward to now - the transformation from singer-for-hire to pure artist is evident in this new full-length solo release, Queen Alone. The record was written and recorded in 10 days at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios, in Queens NY with Leon Michels and Tom Brenneck handling production. Nicole says she is 'Singing out loud now - singing from the stomach.' Back in 1998 she was coached how to sing, and told to stay in a pocket that never let her show her range, power, and passion. Today, after stutter-stepping in and out of the industry, there is a new soul and substance to her songs?all of it from her life. 'They Don't Hang Around', tells the story of her post Roc-A-Fella days, 'Guilty', is about her brother's incarceration, 'Make Me Over' tells the relatable story of being broke with expensive taste, and 'Let It Go', a perfect way to end the record, is about the simple act of letting go and moving on. Almost echoing her new record, Nicole says, 'You have to go through something for it to be real.' She has been living with one foot in fame and the other in real life. The result is clear: she's feeling something real in her music again. And it's hard for us as listeners not to follow suit."

BACAO RHYTHM & STEEL BAND P.I.M.P./Police In Helicopter 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's smashing cover of 'P.I.M.P.' on our imprint. Following up on the smashing success of their debut album 55 and a string of essential 45s, we are the third label to press this staple tune. Three labels, three times, three different B sides. Back in 2008 BRSB released its smashing cover of 50 Cent's 'P.I.M.P.' which was long thought to be the original sample for the tune. The Mocambo pressing already hard to come by and fetching top dollar on the internet has become an underground classic. BRSB treat the tune to their signature smashing drums and bass heavy production, taking the original loop and turning it into a full composition. Brass and steel pan parts putting it somewhere between reggae, steel funk, and the Superfly soundtrack. Side B is the proper reggae offering from BRSB, a cover of the legendary John Holt's classic 'Police In Helicopter'. Another must have two sider, another Big Crown sure shot."

FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS, LEE Special Night 7"
"Class is in session and all the young-ins out there shaking a tail feather and playing dress up are about to be schooled by the ageless, timeless, and always present, Mr. Lee Fields. Special Night is the latest offering from a man whose career has spanned 50 years and as Oliver Wang of NPR once said, 'In a curious case of musical evolution, the older Fields becomes, the closer he gets to perfecting the sound of soul that he grew up with as a young man'. Special Night is no exception. An epic six minute jam split into parts one and two on the 7", Special Night is a story of love and loneliness told from the perspective of a man with extreme life experience and deep wisdom. The tune is the perfect storm of production duties handled by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck alongside the inimitable musicianship of The Expressions, and recorded at the legendary Diamond Mine, Special Night is in the humble opinion of the Big Crown team, one of the greatest pieces of soul music Lee has put to record thus far."

WALLWORK & NICO LINDSAY Facts 12"
Wallwork and London grime emcee, Nico Lindsay, deliver Facts. Wallwork and Tsvi's "Facts" sees the pair turn a stripped-back, minimalist hand to a beat that Lindsay takes on with a relaxed, near-horizontal flow. With neither afraid to deviate from grime's more familiar 140bpm template, their collision of styles is not only refreshing - it's fully vindicated. On "Fyah", Wallwork, assisted by Nan Kolè, leans more toward UK funky, with the beat patterns softer and the percussion less harsh, instead driven by a fierce, chugging groove and twisted, wonky bass notes that Lindsay again navigates.

VA Black Solidarity Presents: Dance Inna Delamare Avenue CD
Black Solidarity Presents: Dance Inna Delamare Avenue is a compilation based on Ossie Thomas's Black Solidarity label. During the '80s dancehall era a number of record producers claimed to be the real authentic sound of downtown Kingston but Ossie Thomas's Black Solidarity label, operating out of Delamare Avenue in the heart of the ghetto, was the real deal. Ossie: "This was the start of the '70s when the political rivalry got heated between JLP and the PNP and the shots start fire... I said to myself if you're going die you're going die... from that me not scared of Kingston." This album provides an insightful glimpse into life in these unforgiving Kingston neighborhoods, describing not only the poverty and desperation but also how at times, styles, fashions and the cathartic joys of music and the dancehall could transform this harsh environment into one of joyous celebration. Features: U Roy, Linval Thompson, Triston Palma, Robert Ffrench, 3t 1f, Little Kirk, Al Campbell, Early B, Jolly Stewart, Lover Boy, Phillip Frazer, Sassafras, Sammy Dread. CD version features tracks from: Tony Chin, Frankie Paul and Little John.

Their tracks are earnest and powerful; equal parts emotional and brutal; cinematic and functional. Bells and monkeys bend around tuned percussion and future-shock electronics. A spirit and charm all their own radiates through their tracks, marking them out as one of the most exciting artists of the Gqom movement. Limber, finely-taut and combustible - this music is fully deserving of your time and attention."

EL'BLASZCZYK ROCK BAND HIMSELF The Quirky Lost Tapes 1993-1995 LP
LP version. The cobbled music and strange pieces from the unpublished majority of The Quirky Lost Tapes 1993-1995 are as bizarre as the genesis of El'Blaszczyk Rock Band Himself. Recorded on tape, at times featuring his ten year old little sister, the irresistible charm of El'Blaszczyk's pieces reveal a delicious bawdiness that is reminiscent of the universe of Jean Yanne, Les Charlots or Boby Lapointe. This is vaguely rhythmic garage music. El'Blaszczyk explores such topics as illness, the French resistance during WWII and medicine in general - all adding to the uniqueness of it all. More than a joke, these pieces are subtle and accomplished, but something suggests that these recordings are also their first plays. In parallel to his schooling at the Beaux Arts, El'Blaszczyk was a student of Christian Eloy, the eminent composer of concrete music and head of the electroacoustic creation of class at the National Conservatory of Bordeaux. No doubt a magneto-phage animal, being a student of Eloy's and his time at the academy reinforced his electro-artisanal approach to music. This period of study and intense creativity allowed him to explore a new path to infinite perspectives, but the academic expectations were ultimately codified - productions for the "less displaced" were received with great caution. The academy allowed him access to a usually difficult to mobilize instrumentation by an amateur: Grand piano, Hammond organ, orchestral percussion, drums, synths and VCS3 Moog 55. The sound database has also served as much to his compositions of concrete and electronic music as it did to his pop productions. Individual schedules provision of the studio is often very late - nightlife in working time was perfectly suited to the more diverse sides. Most of the time, El'Blaszczyk proceeded himself to his own sound recordings. A good disciple of his elder's electro acousticians, he tracked his sounds, its unwavering Nagra shoulder.

Since the release of their debut album, Psycho Tropical Berlin (BORNBAD 051LP, 2013), their rise has only gained momentum with fans including directors Jacques Audiard and Romain Gavras to legends Jean Michel Jarre and Hedi Slimane. Returning with a more psychedelic sound and guest vocalists that slice through the starkest of electro beats, Mystère sees La Femme celebrating their wonderful city. From the chattering tête-à-tête heard on "Conversations Nocturnes" to the throbbing disco beat of "SSD", a direct reference to the pulsing nightlife hotspot and multi-cultural district Strasbourg Saint Denis where the band is based. Mystère's true intrigue however, lies in La Femme's enigmatic questioning of falling in and out of love. A compendium of short stories describing loves and losses, each song breaks down language barriers through an inventive and astute knack for melody. The elation of a passionate encounter is captured on the ricocheting electronics of "Tatiana", the melancholic acoustic guitar echoes in "Le Vide Est Ton Nouveau Prenom" and the sorrow of a war-torn couple in "Psyzook". Whether delicate or drenched in dirty disco, the impact of Clémence, Marlon and Sacha's gothic mantras mixed with the guest vocal talent of Clara Luciani, Jane Peynot, Naomi Greene, Mathilde Marlière, Angela Hureau, Battista Acquaviva and Sarah Ben Abdallah is perhaps where La Femme's true meaning can be found. Sacha on his band's all-inclusive philosophy: "We don't like the idea of having a leader or a chief: everyone brings to the band what they can and want." Recorded between a castle in Brittany and a Paris basement before being finished up with Sonny Diperri (Animal Collective) in LA, Mystère once again sees backgrounds blurred and worlds collide. The band's chic retro-futurist surf-pop sound possesses the same dose of glamorous punk stomp as before, but this time around it's layered with an elegant fusion of influences from Ennio Morricone, Marie Et Les Garcons's disco-rock touch and the lysergic romanticism of The Velvet Underground. Through increased use of strings and further exploration of sound, Mystère also incorporates the band's new love of oriental sounds, Turkish disco, Tuareg blues, medieval psychedelia to mainstays Brian Eno and Pink Floyd.

BUNDT, MICHAEL Electri City CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Michael Bundt's Electri City, originally released in 1980. Having played his way through the 1970s in various rock combos (Medusa, Nine Days' Wonder), Michael Bundt embarked on a solo career in the latter part of the decade, releasing three albums which saw him explore the vast potential of electronic music. Delightfully varied and typical of his willingness to experiment, his music orbits around krautrock, Berlin School electronica, space-futurism and synth pop. Electri City, his last album, was created in Bundt's own studio using a PPG synthesizer and a Teac four-track tape recorder. He worked on the mixes with a Revox tape machine, cutting and splicing by hand. Whereas he had enlisted guest musicians on the predecessor Neon (1979), this time around he did everything himself, except for two tracks which featured keyboarder Steve Robison (Reiner Geyer) who had played with Bundt in the krautrock band Nine Days' Wonder. The resulting LP is replete with experimental electronic music, psychedelic in places. Music which leaves the Krautrock of Neon far behind. Electri City is like a science fiction story: inquisitive, playful, energetic, willing to take the fantastic on board. Step sequencer miniatures flow easily through the music as it conjures up electrifying escapades of synth FX and distorted field recording fragments, laced with melodies heavy on portamento - all coming together in a complex, expressive musical structure that would not be out of place in a Captain Future film. Michael Bundt dedicated Electri City to the fictitious character Kilgore Trout who was created by the author Kurt Vonnegut. Trout appears in a number of Vonnegut's novels, usually described as an unsuccessful science fiction writer whose stories at best make it into pulp fiction comic books or the pages of men's magazines. Synthesizer music at that time was generally considered suspect, purportedly trivial, in contrast to the pure playing techniques so freely exhibited in progressive rock. Perhaps Bundt felt that this mirrored the fate of Trout's eminently readable works, Vonnegut's intradiegetic stories. But Michael Bundt was not going on the defensive with Electri City having already offered proof enough of his virtuosity. Michael Bundt cast aside his instruments and stepped away from krautrock, purposefully striving for a purely synthetic analog sound.

VA Katanga! Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 1 & 2 CD
Katanga! Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 1 & 2 combines the first two volumes from the Exotic Blues & Rhythm compilation series named Katanga! (2013) and Ahbe Casabe! (2013) with two additional bonus tracks (CD only). This album is a colorful garden of delights consisting of R'n'B and rock'n'roll based songs from the 1940s to the early 1960s that all have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation. Eddie Cole & Three Peppers with their hypnotizing groover "Police" for example present a Caribbean mento with a mambo and rhythm'n'blues feel. This piece finds its roots in the late 1940s and demonstrates how far even the predecessors of rock music already got in their development. It is only one out of 26 rare gems. The collection starts with the recognizable, gloomy bluesy tune named "Green Onions" played the Claus Ogermann Orchestra. The Ahbe Casabe portion is where the strange and quirky charm of exotica music captures souls even more. The title track for example is a song from the late '50s written by proto hippie Ehden Ahbez and combines a Latin groove with a vocal melody speaking of dark backstreets in oriental cities. The backing vocal effects here are more than strange somewhere between a deep gnarling and chipmunk-style squeaking while the lead vocals on the other hand are soulful and striking as expected. Kip Tyler's "Shadow Street" leaves the listener somewhere in between the jungle and a haunted oriental café in a town near the desert plains of Egypt. Next to master Ike Turner & His Kings Of Rhythm with his exotic surf instrumental "Katanga" from the first part, good old rock'n'roll pioneer Bill Haley And His Comets should be the most famous contributor to this musical treasure chest. A nice little oddity bonus track is "The Riddle Of The Papawhos" by Danny Staton, based on old spirituals and gospels with a 1950s pop music base. The other bonus track by Elena Madera named "Pu-Chun-Ga", is another outstanding mad Latin tune with wild female vocals. Also features: Artie Barsamin & Orchestra, Prince Conley, Joe Valino, Chance Halladay, The Chiefs, Jimmy Rushing, Sonny Til And The Orioles, Emmet Davis, Classie Ballou, Jack La Forge, Marti Barris, Steve Arlen, Bruce Cloud, Dickie Thompson, Rene Hall And His Band, Machito And His Orchestra, Mamie Perry, Lord Kitchener and Jamie Coe.

CANNANES, THE A Love Affair With Nature PIC. DISC
Chapter Music present a reissue of A Love Affair With Nature, the 1989 second album by Australian DIY icons, The Cannanes. This reissue comes as a picture disc with new liner notes, an extensive PDF booklet and a full 13 digital bonus tracks from early singles and unreleased sessions. First formed in Sydney in the mid '80s, The Cannanes are one of the most celebrated underground bands of the Antipodes, with a book, a documentary and even a pair of limited edition Converse sneakers devoted to them. Over their 30 year career they have amassed 11 albums and innumerable singles on labels all around the world. They have toured the US, UK, Mexico, Japan and Europe repeatedly. A Love Affair With Nature holds a special place in The Cannanes's canon. After a series of early lineup shuffles, the band condensed into their classic core trio - drummer David Nichols, guitarist Stephen O'Neil and heartbreaking vocalist Fran Gibson. Each contributes songs that veer between insightful and absurd, conveying a 20-something inner-city existence that feels simultaneously fleeting and universal. Initially self-released on colored vinyl by the band, Love Affair was subsequently licensed by Chicago label Feel Good All Over, with a CD version a few years later on another classic Chicago imprint, Ajax Records. The Cannanes began touring the US and UK regularly, becoming one of Kurt Cobain's favorite bands (as mentioned in his diaries) and had further releases on quintessentially '90s labels such as K Records, Harriet and Little Teddy. Chapter released a split single in 1996 and their album Living The Dream in 2000, before signing back on for 2013's Howling At All Hours (CH 103CD/LP), their first album in more than a decade. Out of print and unavailable since the mid '90s, A Love Affair With Nature is the idiosyncratic Australian classic you always knew you would love, but had never been able to track down.

BALL & JON SAVAGE, DAVE Photosynthesis CD
Dave Ball (Soft Cell, The Grid) and Jon Savage present Photosynthesis. They explain how Photosynthesis developed: "We started composing some quasi pop/classical pieces that gradually morphed and evolved into one, hour-long piece. Via digital recording and processing of vintage analog sound sources (i.e. mini Moog, Sequential Circuits, Prophet 5 synthesizers etc.) the piece gradually took shape. The title Photosynthesis was re-appropriated from the botanical process. Sitting in the garden surrounded by trees and plants on a sunny day, the idea of organisms using sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water became an inspiration to us. This idea, juxtaposed with mankind's destruction of the planet through pollution and war gave us the inspiration to compose this soundscape." Comes in a beautiful six-panel digipak, cloaked in exquisite flora art.

VA Boogie Breakdown: South African Synth Disco 1980-1984 CD
"True to form, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul is set to release a compilation of obscure disco from a far-flung corner of the world. After forays into India and Brazil, they now turn their attention to South Africa. South Africa is home to a dizzying variety of musical genres and traditions, including some that look directly to American sounds for inspiration. In the late '70s and early '80s, many of the country's best young musicians were guided by funk. All over the world, disco was growing harder and more electronic, with new synthesizers entering the market every month. The southern tip of Africa was no exception. Global music industry geo-politics, however, aided by the country's pariah status and a UN-sanctioned cultural boycott, prevented the vast majority of this music from ever being heard outside the country, nor ever being released on CD or digitally. Until now. Compiled by Cultures Of Soul head honcho Deano Sounds in collaboration with Johannesburg-based DJ Okapi from the Afro-synth blog and record store, Boogie Breakdown serves up two tracks apiece from six seminal acts from the era - Harari, The Cannibals, Neville Nash, Benjamin Ball, Don Laka and Al Etto - to offer a glimpse into this long-forgotten era in African music history. A period of true innovation and new possibilities - as well as isolation and political instability - the early '80s in South Africa saw the emergence of numerous talented, innovative artists, whose efforts soon gave rise to the big-selling 'bubblegum' sound of the mid-80s. As the decade wore on, this sound shed its American roots and took on more local influences, becoming ever more electronic and less funky, to become the kwaito of the '90s and ultimately the house music of today. It all started with the arrival of synthesizers and the creativity of producers and artists featured on this compilation - pioneers of a new sound before it became established and marketable - global in its appeal, yet rooted in Africa."

TRICCA MCNIFF Southern Star CD
Emma Tricca and Jason McNiff present the mini album, Southern Star. Tricca and McNiff first met each other a number of years ago in the 12 Bar Club, a venue that they both played at and frequented looking for like-minded souls. Brought together by their mutual appreciation of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, (Jason knew Bert and Emma knew John) they forged a friendship and made plans to one day record together. Their solo careers blossomed, Tricca "carving folk's new golden era" with her two delicate records for Finders Keepers and McNiff releasing six albums of highly regarded singer/songwriter material. But the roots run deep with Tricca and McNiff and the friendship and intention remained, and their recording plans were finally realized in the summer of 2015. Fortune found them with time on their hands and after a summer of rehearsal in a farm house in rural Italy and engineer/producer Tommaso Colliva of Calibro 35 suddenly free from duties with Muse, they got to fulfil this career long ambition and Southern Star was born. The songs feature the pair sharing vocals on each other's material, three songs written by both Tricca and McNiff, and highlight a yearning for travel and the emotions that are stirred by distant shores. The only kids in town who were listening to Bert and John and finger-picking on their guitars in those distant days of the 12 Bar deliver a consummate and engrossing listening experience where one travels with them on a southbound train, taking in stops in New York, the Hills of Rome and Paris in rain, the long way. As Tricca sings on McNiff's song, "Hills of Rome", "I come down on my bike to the market place, got petrol in my blood and wind in my face, my God I seem to be winning this race, got no one to chase to now..."

Triple LP version. White vinyl. Comes with printed inner sleeves and includes a download code. DIY: A simple idea, rooted in the wish to change the predominant principles and to do something in one's own way. For 10 years now, Diynamic - the artist collective surrounding label father Solomun - acts true to this calling. Since 2006, it's all been about releasing, partying, thinking ahead and doing it yourself. Born in the heart of Hamburg's St. Pauli neighborhood, it is now home in virtually every corner of the world. The beginning of the adventure dates back even further, to the year 2003, when the clique around Solomun introduced their DIY party series in Hamburg. 2006 saw the founding of the music label Diynamic, followed by the opening of infamous EGO club in Hamburg's red light district, St. Pauli. in 2009. This was soon succeeded by festivals on multiple continents, worldwide Diynamic showcases and several successful residencies on Ibiza. How do you commemorate such a special anniversary? The year 2016 already saw the novel 10-Years-Diynamic parties in multiple metropolises around the globe - so now it's time for some music. The 10 Years Diynamic compilation is a collection of 13 unreleased original productions by Solomun (feat. Liu Bei), Adriatique, H.O.S.H., Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Stimming, Karmon, NTFO, Thyladomid, Ost & Kjex, Magdalena, Johannes Brecht, Undercatt and Lehar. DADAWAH Peace And Love LP
LP version, 2016 repress. Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974. Led by Jamaican Rastafarian singing hand-drummer Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation drums and bass-heavy (with no rhythm guitar; rather, Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed blues). Lloyd Charmers and Federal Studios engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards. At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia. Previously squandered in an incongruous 2-for-1 reissue, now lovingly returned to its original, singular glory at Abbey Road. Pressed on super-fly vinyl and housed in new standard-printed sleeves.

ESSEL, HANS Saitensack LP
2013 release. Saitensack is the first-ever release for Darmstadt-based composer Hans Essel who has been active in improvised music and Grundlagenmusik (foundational music) for more than 20 years. The album showcases his project Saitensack (string-bag) in which he develops new ways of playing the violin and viola. Comparisons could be drawn to other experimental violinists like Tony Conrad and Takehisa Kosugi but Hans Essel uses a far more stripped-down approach: The instruments are neither modified nor amplified. Strings are not pressed by fingers but rather damped. Only through bowing, they are excited to complex free vibrations, sometimes harsh and noisy, at other times reminiscent of uilleann pipes with cracking and breaking like in yodeling. Saitensack focuses on the origin of tones out of the noise, zooming into the very character of string instruments. Saitensack is pure violin - the essence of violin playing. Side A features an overtone-rich performance from 1994. Side B has a harsher 1999 recording: 24 minutes of pure violin noise bliss. Edition of 500. Includes printed inner sleeve featuring a Saitensack discussion transcript.

PANHUYSEN, PAUL Pendulum Change Ringing LP
2014 release. First vinyl LP edition by Dutch sound and visual artist Paul Panhuysen since 1986. In terms of sound art, Paul Panhuysen is well-known for his long string installations, yet he has produced a vast amount of other sound installations using different materials and sound sources ranging from various instruments to animals such as birds. This LP contains a recording of the installation "Pendulum Change Ringing", displayed at Pand Koloniale Waren in Hasselt (Belgium) in 2012. The installation consists of twelve engraved Turkish metal platters, each mounted onto a black plastic bin, and placed in a 20-meter long row. The rim of each platter is hit by a metal pendulum operated by a tiny electromotor. Each hit causes the platter to resonate with a rich sound texture full of dissonant overtones. During the recording, the twelve pendulums are activated one after the other. The paces at which they swing differ due to their rods having different lengths. This causes interlocking rhythmic patterns to emerge that become more complex with each step and never stay the same. Hits aggregate into clusters, then thin out again. The sound is not chaotic, yet its regularity is hard to comprehend. "You might call 'Pendulum Change Ringing' a typical Paul Panhuysen piece: it works according to a system, quite a simple one in fact, but its effect surpasses that apparent simplicity by far." - René van Peer. Edition of 300. Full-color sleeve with photos of the installation and liner notes by René van Peer. Black poly-lined inner sleeve.

ZELLER, HANS RUDOLPH Hans Rudolf Zeller LP
2014 release. Hans Rudolf Zeller (b. 1934 in Berlin) is best-known for being a music theorist, essayist and writer on contemporary music. His essays on Dieter Schnebel, Iannis Xenakis, micro-tonality etc., often published in the German journal Musik-Konzepte, are deemed being among the best ever written on new music. Apart from that, he has since the 1960s maintained his own artistic work, most of which has not been published or only seen the light of day in private micro-editions. Zeller's work often involves combining multiple dimensions (texts, vocals, visual projections) into one cinematological literature. This LP edition is an attempt at collecting various elements of Zeller's work. All recordings have been made between 2006 and 2016, yet many of the underlying concepts date back to the 1960s or 1970s. Contained are two scriptophonies (works combining writing and vocals, with the notion of writing being extended in ways not unlike those Carlfriedrich Claus and Gerhard Rühm have shown), two vocal improvisations, one piece of Tesa sounds (sounds produced by adhesive tape), and one piece for horn. The full-color sleeve and inner sleeve show Tesa pictures made between 1961 and 1970, and one collage from 2010. There is one insert with detailed liner notes by Zeller in German and English, and another insert showing a relic of a scriptophony. Edition of 300.

MACIUNAS ENSEMBLE 1976 LP
2015 release. The Maciunas Ensemble was founded in 1968 by Dutch musicians and sound artists Paul Panhuysen, Remko Scha and Jan van Riet. It has existed ever since, though having gone through a number of membership changes until today. The group's intention was to realize the piece "Music for Everyman" by Fluxus initiator George Maciunas which they interpreted as allowing boundless freedom in the sounds being produced. The group met at a regular basis, usually improvising on a number of instruments that were at hand. Every session was recorded. Before playing, they listened to the recording of the previous session and discussed it. No rehearsing or fine-tuning of pre-conceived material took place. To the view of Paul Panhuysen, their method of making music is closely linked with the oral tradition of folk music. This LP edition features two pieces, both recorded on December 19, 1976, and never released before on any format. Here, the group comprised Paul Panhuysen, Remko Scha, Jan van Riet, Leon van Noorden and Hans Schuurman. "This music is literally polyphonic - a composition of multiple voices. The members of the ensemble do not engage in virtuoso playing. Although each may go down his individual path, no one attempts to outdo the others in exuberant soloing. Their approach to improvisation bears none of the hallmarks of jazz. It is a group effort. They operate as a band in the anthropological sense: a small, mobile, and fluid social formation without clear-cut leadership." (from the liner notes by René van Peer) Edition of 250.

RIEHN, RAINER Chants de Maldoror 2LP
Rainer Riehn (1941-2015) was a German musicologist, conductor and composer of avant-garde music. He is best known for being the long-time partner and collaborator of Heinz-Klaus Metzger with whom he published the journal Musik-Konzepte between 1977 and 2003, devoted to the musical avant-garde of all eras. Together, they also founded the Ensemble Musica Negativa in 1969, committed to radical music by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Dieter Schnebel, for which Riehn served as the conductor and organizer. Nevertheless, his own small but impressive compositional oeuvre of chamber and electronic music remained mostly unpublished. Between 1965 and 1971, Riehn was a student with Gottfried Michael Koenig at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht where he realized a number of electronic pieces of which only one, "Chants de Maldoror", was released on Deutsche Grammophon in 1970. This edition for the first time collects all surviving pieces he made during this period. Included are two versions of "Chants de Maldoror", one side-long piece in a similar vein, and two shorter conceptual pieces. The double LP is presented in a gatefold sleeve with a 4-sided insert, reproducing an essay by Riehn on his way of composing ("Art and Feces") and an extensive interview about his time in Utrecht. All texts are printed in German and English. Edition of 300.

DUBACH & MARIO VAN HORRIK, PETRA Waves 2x12"
Petra Dubach and Mario van Horrik have been working together as an artistic duo in Eindhoven since 1983. Originally, they combined dance and music in concerts, performances and theater pieces, Dubach being a dancer and van Horrik making music. Mario van Horrik is also a long-time member of the Maciunas Ensemble alongside Paul Panhuysen et al. Dubach's and van Horrik's starting point was the notion that movement and sound are essentially the same: If there is no movement (vibration), nothing can be heard; if there is no sound, nothing moves. Over the years, the boundaries between movement and sound in their work became more and more blurred while they worked out their root idea in every thinkable form, ranging from installations and site-specific works to performances and concerts. In 2010, they started their ongoing research project Waves which involves producing movement feedback using shakers, a kind of loudspeakers that reproduce sound frequencies as vibrations, attached to long strings. Over the years, they have made numerous installations and concerts based upon this concept and have experimented with all sorts of objects incorporated into the basic Waves setup, including Chinese lanterns, hooks, loose strings etc. This edition gathers four recordings of different Waves installations, all made in Dubach's and van Horrik's private studio in Eindhoven. It is presented as a double 12 inch set (45 rpm) with a full-color gatefold sleeve and liner notes by Milos Vojt?chovský. Edition of 300.

CUNI & WERNER DURAND, AMELIA Diasporagas LP
Amelia Cuni was born in Milan and has lived in India for more than ten years where she studied dhrupad singing with various renowned masters. Werner Durand has been performing his own music for saxophones, Iranian ney and self-made wind instruments since the late '70s. He started building his own wind instruments from plexi-glass, PVC and metal tubes in the early '80s and has performed in various groups including The Thirteenth Tribe and Armchair Traveller. Since the '90s, Cuni and Durand have been performing together as a duo as well as in collaborations such as Tonaliens and Born Of Six. Diasporagas, sub-titled "Ancient Trends and New Traditions in Indo-European Music", summarizes their various musical projects in which her Indian raga singing meets his minimalist and experimental approach. In all of their collaborations, they have been creating unique forms and expanding the palette of their sound worlds while keeping the essence of raga music, justifying the use of the term in its original meaning. The title is meant to be understood as a statement to provoke reflections on our ideas of cultural identity vs. globalization, and tradition vs. experimentation. A central Diasporagas work is "Hiss (Mastered Noise)" for dhrupad singing, invented wind instruments, Indian percussion and samples of historical recordings by Indian singers. It is partly based on their earlier work "Gramophone Saraswati" which involved replicas of Luigi Russolo's intonarumori instead of the Indian recordings. This LP includes "Hiss (Mastered Noise)" and two other pieces entitled "Aqua Shiva" and "Agana Song". Comes in a full-color sleeve with a printed inner sleeve reproducing the score of "Hiss (Mastered Noise)". Edition of 300.

BRINKMANN, THOMAS A 1000 Keys CD
"How many can get a personal sound out of a fucking piano?!" - Lee Konitz. Thomas Brinkmann takes his seductive reductionism to the next level with A 1000 Keys, a harsh meditation on the expressive qualities of digital sound production. In translating the timbre of a grand piano into binary codes, thus rebuilding its corpus with "0 and 1s", Brinkmann subverts the sensual qualities of this proto-romantic instrument in a sardonic way. Replacing the musician with a mathematically precise series of frenetic repetition and intriguingly dissonant difference, the result sounds at times like a violent ride through the brains of Schönberg or Webern, drained in amphetamines, at others like Feldman's ephemeral sketches or Russolo's futurist outburst. Brinkmann's conceptual framework is resonating in the track titles. Using shortcuts of international airports, he refers to non-places that establish their own space-and-time continuum, while lacking individual identity and history. These functional scenarios are sterile passages for anonymous, objectified masses, at the same time there's hardly a better place to grasp the very subjective character of time. A 1000 Keys is a fatal homage to minimalism and a consequent denial of virtuosity and the idea of creative genius. Paraphrasing the romantic idea of human perfection, Brinkmann found a way to create sonic algorithms of tenderness and brutality, establishing dramatic expressiveness in his constructivist analytics. The result is of radical beauty. Dedicated to Conlon Nancarrow.

DAX J Illusions Of Power 12"
Dax J's Illusions Of Power is a militant, yet atmospherical dancefloor assault. In "Reign Of Terror", "Harry The Hatchet", "Zulu Nation" and "The Quest", Dax J flexes sinewy techno muscle in his rave-inciting idiom where the new and the old-school collide. Then in the angst-ridden "Cartagena Square" (built around field recordings from Cartagena in South America) and dreamy breakbeats of "Breaking Visions", Illusions of Power present two very different diversions from the dance. In one there is light and a sense of relief; in the other, shadowy omens of the world are massing.

VOLANS, KEVIN Violin:Piano CD
2015 release. An album of chamber music by South Africa-born composer Kevin Volans, Violin:Piano features luminous, absorbing performances from violinist Waldo Alexander and pianist Jill Richards. Violin:Piano features premiere recordings of three major duos from 2009 - "Violin:Piano", "Etude 9" for piano and electronics, and "Viola:Piano" - as well as the violin solo "Passi Leggieri", originally composed for Norwegian hardanger fiddle in 2003. Sensitively performed by two experienced interpreters of Volans's music, this music is all about the contour of the moment. From its first sumptuous gesture, each piece absorbs completely, promising an adventure of luminous beauty. "Collaboration with Kronos Quartet boosted the public profile of Kevin Volans. That level of exposure doesn't suit a composer who is too flexible to be locked into expectations. On this absorbing release violinist Waldo Alexander and pianist Jill Richards interpret relatively new pieces." -- The Wire, December 2015.

FUJITA & JAN JELINEK, MASAYOSHI Schaum CD
Faitiche presents the release of Schaum by Masayoshi Fujita & Jan Jelinek. Since their debut Bird, Lake, Objects (FAITICHE 003CD, 2010), they have played improvised concerts around the world. Japanese vibraphonist Masayoshi Fujita prepares his instrument with various percussion elements as well as metal objects and toys, while Jan Jelinek layers loops made using small-scale electronic devices. Schaum (German for froth or foam) is the duo's second album. Jelinek writing to Fujita about the album: "Dear Masayoshi Fujita, many thanks for the audio files. Your additional vibraphone recordings go wonderfully with the material we have already. Preparing the vibraphone with more percussion instruments was the right decision. Combined with my tightly woven synthesizer and sample loops, the result is a fragmented sense of space. I have taken the liberty of manipulating certain recordings. While listening through our improvisations, I noticed a tendency towards atmospheric sounds. I am almost tempted to call them tropical. This has strengthened my resolve to work with dense background textures - among others, I'm using material produced in connection with my radio pieces 'Kennen Sie Otahiti?' (2012) and 'Dialoge zur Anthropologie' (2013): artificial field recordings, jungle and rain forest settings that do not hide their staged, fictional character. As you know, I have long been obsessed with the tropics. This obsession involves a mental image of a specific quality of landscape: deliriously extravagant unstructuredness, hostile to life but also excessively productive. I am fascinated by the idea of installing clear minimalist forms amid such luxuriant tropical growth. Perhaps my image of the city of Brasilia is a good example. Corresponding to this, I would like to expand our liner notes to include a quotation from Robert Müller's novel Tropics, an expressionist travelogue published in Germany in 1915. It goes without saying that this work cannot be wholeheartedly embraced: its imperialistic fantasies of omnipotence and its 'master race' posturing, characteristic of that time and place, are, of course, intolerable. Tropics is fascinating as a nervous jungle phantasm that openly indulges in exoticism at the same time as deconstructing it. In this way, the main character's adventure becomes a journey into the subjective. It resembles a feverish inner delirium, exposing exoticism as a simulated, utopian perspective. What it boils down to is insubstantial, nothing but foam and froth. With best regards, Jan Jelinek" Comes in hard-cover book-style packaging.

SONIC YOUTH Confusion Is Sex CD
"Originally slated to be a seven-inch single to follow up their self-titled debut, Sonic Youth's Confusion Is Sex blossomed into the band's first album: a brain-bludgeoning, completely fried endeavor of dissonance and disarray, a perfect soundtrack for running from a chain-wielding gang near the SIN Club. This was the sound of 1983 New York City: nothing like London where punks were starting to scrub their faces and sounds to get on Top of the Pops, and nothing like the jangly roots of college radio rock starting to formulate in Athens, Georgia. It sounded like no one else on Earth, for that matter. The raw, Wharton Tiers 8-track production is dark, the Kim Gordon-scrawled cover figure art of Thurston Moore is dark, Lee Renaldo 's back cover photo-collage and Catherine Ceresole's crumpled-xeroxed images that adorned the inside are dark. VA La Torre Volumen Uno 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Gatefold jacket. No matter the season or the nationality, every day on Ibiza, tribute is paid to Carthaginian deity Tanit at sunset. The warrior goddess of dance, fertility, creation and destruction lords over the Balearic island, as she has for centuries. Phoenicians, Assyrians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Arabs, and even the Norwegians have conquered the island since ancient times and every summer that history plays out, a similar array of nationalities descending on the island anew. Yet the soul of Ibiza remains intact. Every sunset still ushers in her arrival; that singular, sacred time on the island, taking on the feel of a pagan ritual, a shift in consciousness - the end of the beginning. For those who make the pilgrimage looking for this transformative experience, it requires little more than venturing away from the Vegas-like lights of San Antonio towards such sublimity. Tucked away on the west coast of the island, Hostel La Torre beckons with its beauty and "vista spectacular", encompassing the essence of that authentic Balearic spirit, as pioneered by Alfredo Fiorito at Amnesia and José Padilla at Café del Mar in the early '80s. But this is not an exercise in nostalgia, rather a journey that seeks to reframe Balearic music in the present moment by embracing that "anything goes" spirit via the avant-garde of Finis Africae's "Managua", rare classics like the Arabic pop funk of Ahmed Fakroun's "Nisyan" and Cameroonian poetry of Francis Bebey's "Forest Nativity", with the proto ambient house of Spooky's "Orange Coloured Liquid" and modern productions like Dominique Dumont's "Comme Ça", Andras's "Gold Coast" and Mark Barrott's "Deep Water". Balearic in its truest form is all these things and much more, it's cosmopolitan and countercultural, international yet wholly specific to a singular place on Earth. It lights upon and encapsulates all the evocative beauty of Ibiza, the sounds themselves matching the color palette of the island. The red dirt hills and the white sands, the pink blooms of almond trees and the electric blue of the water surrounding Es Vedrà, the raw beauty of Ibiza is all here. At its root, Balearic music is always experiential. Also features: Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Cantoma, Barry Forgie, Il Guardiano Del Fa Ro, Tri Atma Und Gyan, Planet Funk, Gryningen Frün Andra and Hatchback.

VAUDOU GAME Kidayu LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve. When recording Kidayu, the album from Vaudou Game, Peter Solo immersed his Lyon companions in the flourishing Afro-beat rhythms of the 1970s along with traditional song. Marked at times by James Brown-style shouts, Kidayu pairs voodoo harmonies with funk and blues. Born in Aného-Glidji, Togo, the birthplace of the Guin tribe and a major site of the Voodoo culture, Peter Solo was raised with this tradition's values of respect for all forms of life and the environment. At an early age, he made a makeshift guitar, and his music propelled him into the spotlight. Mastering traditional percussion instruments, his desire to discover the world and to carry his practice forward led him to England, where he became immersed in gospel music and then to France, where he calls home today. The idea of integrating the haunting voodoo lines, sung in honor of the divinities, into energetic '70s Afro-funk, is, in Solo's mind, an obvious extension of the analogy he found between this voodoo tradition and trance inducers such as the soul, funk, and rhythm 'n blues of James Brown and Otis Redding. Solo had a vision of codifying the musical scales that are found in sacred songs of Beninese and Togolese vodun music. Entirely produced, recorded, mixed and mastered using vintage material and instruments produced in the '70s, old cassette tapes were the "grigris" (or lucky charms) which proved most effective to ward off digital corruption of their music and allow them to thrive as a tight-knit group. "Kidayu" means "sharing" in Kabye, the language spoken in northern Togo, and sharing, is the philosophy of Vaudou Game. In songs like "Natural Vaudou", "Chérie Nye" and "La vie c'est bon", the unbeatable trance rhythm inherited from James Brown and Fela Kuti are evident. Across Kidayu, Vaudou Game sound like the big bands from the golden age of Ethiopian dance music but it's in songs like "La dette", "Revolution" and "Elle décide" where they show their greatest inspiration - James Brown. In using the original form of ecstatic voodoo rituals, he decorates his songs with guitars, keyboards, bass, rhythms and counter rhythms, and a steaming pair of brass. On Kidayu, Solo is joined by: Vicente Fritis - keyboards/backing vocals; Jerôme Bartolome - saxophone/percussions/backing vocals; Guilhem Parguel - trombone/percussions/backing vocals; Simon Bacroix - bass/backing vocals; Hafid Zouaoui - drums; Stephane Pauze - sound engineer.

TRENTEMOLLER Fixion 2LP
Double LP version in standard sleeve; includes download code. In My Room presents Fixion, the fourth full-length offering from Anders Trentemøller. With Fixion, Anders has crafted a logical successor to 2013's Lost (IMR 014CD/LP), a record that in many ways managed to truly capture the visceral live experience of Trentemøller as a full band. In much the same manner that Lost built on from the somber cinematic classic that was Into The Great Wide Yonder (IMR 002CD/LP, 2010), Fixion has embraced the Danish artist's trademark melancholy and matured it into something uniquely atmospheric and darkly romantic. Rather than attempting to completely reinvent himself, Anders has used his latest outing as an opportunity to highlight certain granular aspects of his signature sound and refine them into a much more organic -- and at times perhaps more song-driven -- body of work. It's a record that on first listen may seem less detailed but, with Trentemøller, one should never be fooled by initial impressions. It's the kind of record that will over time repeatedly unlock new intricacies and offer the listener an opportunity to understand the work differently upon each listen. The album succeeds in traversing a swathe of influences and unassuming genres -- yet all the while holding true to Trentemøller's unique and sometimes challenging vernacular. From cascading minimalist synth-scapes to driving electro-punk, each and every track on Fixion is bound together with a contemplative melodic complexity. Vocals on "River In Me" and "Complicated" are by Jehnny Beth, singer of the UK band Savages, whose 2016 album Adore Life was mixed by Trentemøller. Marie Fisker, a mainstay of the Trentemøller live constellation, has also been a long-time studio collaborator of Anders and her four songs on Fixion mark their third musical partnership. Lisbet Fritze also features as a vocalist on "Where The Shadows Fall." Guest musicians include Jeppe Brix (Howl Baby Howl) on guitar, Lisbet Fritze on bass and guitar, and Jakob Høyer on drums and toms; all other instruments were played by Anders Trentemøller. The album was mastered by Grammy-nominee Emily Lazar at The Lodge (David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, Goldfrapp, Moby, Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, The Velvet Underground).

"As one-third of The Gories, singer/guitarist Danny Kroha cemented himself in rock history for his contributions to a groundbreaking and influential band. In between the Gories' 1992 breakup and their soft return in 2009, Kroha fronted Danny & the Darleans (amongst other projects), centering around his feral howls and masterful guitar clanging. Bug Out, their sophomore album, refines some of the savage bombast of the Gories while ditching almost all of the glam camp of Kroha's other long-running act, the Demolition Doll Rods. Backed by fireball drummer Richie Wohlfeil (Detroit Cobras, Mother Whale, Saturday Looks Good to Me, and many others) and bassist Colleen Burke (once keyboardist for Chicago art-punks We Regazzi), they're something of a party band. The tunes are often lighthearted, fun, and rowdy, but there is also an undercurrent of science fiction dread. The record is a virtual reality labyrinth in which the listener wanders around sleepwalking, constantly opening new doors and sliding between tableaux vivants. The poetic vocals by Hassan, alternately in Arabic and English, is an absent guide that takes the listener to ethereal micro-cosmoses. Dubby baselines, a cold drum computer, analog electronics and subtle tape collages come together in an intriguing and wondrous web of unravelling side plots. Yaqaza is a magic realist frame narrative. The side roles are performed by Sicilian salt miners, Bolaji Badejo (actor of the "alien" in Alien (1979)) or Cheba Nouria (an Algerian pop star).

FORMA Physicalist CD
"Physicalist is the third album from New York City synthesis trio Forma. Since their acclaimed self-titled debut in 2011, Forma have been perfecting a distinctive style of improvised kosmische and minimalism that blends swirling arpeggios, ambient soundscapes, and driving motorik beats. Physicalist is a sprawling, double LP journey featuring new member and multi-instrumentalist John Also Bennett. The first Forma album to include acoustic instrumentation, Physicalist owes more to American composers like Harold Budd or Terry Riley than Klaus Schulze and other Krautrock visionaries. The album was recorded during marathon sessions at Brooklyn's Gary's Electric studio, and is packaged in a gatefold jacket with original artwork by Robert Beatty and a liner notes essay by writer and critic Michael Barron. Physicalist was mastered by Bob Weston. Formed in 2010 by Mark Dwinell in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Forma released their first two full-length LPs on John Elliot's influential Editions Mego imprint, Spectrum Spools. Physicalist is the first full-length statement from the new lineup, which also includes founding member and percussionist George Bennett. The double LP contains two distinct halves; the first consisting of rhythmic compositions derived from the trio's formidable array of modular and vintage synthesizers, and the second breaking from the grid with ambient, free-flowing experiments on piano, flute and acoustic percussion. The album marks a departure from Cool Haptics, the group's techno-leaning 2014 EP on The Bunker New York. Physicalist takes its title from physicalism, the philosophical belief that all phenomena in the universe are created entirely from physical interactions. Using a synthesizer as its foundation, kosmische music turns algorithms into art by investigating infinite possibilities within a set of physical parameters. The electronic composer Laurie Spiegel once suggested that a looped algorithmic sequence could go on forever, and as long as humans were able to interact with it, it would never cease to interest us. This is the bedrock of improvisation, and it is from this vantage point that Forma have created Physicalist, an American kosmische music in which a boundless voyage gives way to a structured environment -- a programmed jazz with the grid as guidepost. 'We're not interested in providing an escapism for people,' says member Mark Dwinell, 'We want to instead connect with people through a vigilantly monitored present. To us, that real moment, shed of any fancy, is just as divine.'"

NUEL Unveiled 12"
Repress. In stamped paper sleeves, this time; and cheaper. "A stone scorcher of an EP to put alongside his classic Aquaplanos with Donato Dozzy, from nearly ten years ago. Four contrasting, deeply atmospheric stages in longing -- swingeing and propulsive to blissed-out and bittersweet. Terse but charged; hypnotic, never bludgeoning; soulful and warmly crafted, never mechanical. Says Nuel -- 'Unveiled consists of live recordings made on the same great day: 03/10/2015. The inspiration comes from a woman, the record is my reaction to something she unveiled. The record is about really strong feelings, relationships and mental projections... a sexy record for me. After that recording session I found these tracks so appealing that I decided to keep them in that form, a document of that day.' . . . Another killer from the redoubtable Latency."

SHAGGS, THE Philosophy Of The World CD
"In 1968, three sisters from Fremont, New Hampshire strapped on their instruments and declared themselves The Shaggs. At that moment begun a peculiar tale that would last far beyond the group's five-year run. Dot, Betty and Helen (and occasionally Rachel, the fourth sister) played in the group on the insistence of their father, Austin Wiggin Jr., who was convinced they were going to be big. Years earlier, Austin's mother gave him a palm reading, predicting that her son would marry a strawberry blonde woman, that he would have two sons after his mother died, and that his daughters would form a popular music outfit. The first two became reality, so Austin was certain the third would follow suit. With pure confidence and his mother's bold prediction, Austin decided that his daughters would forgo attending the local high school in favor of home schooling interspersed with a strict regiment of instrumental and vocal practice, along with jumping jacks and sit-ups. Soon after The Shaggs would enter Fleetwood Recording studios in Revere, Massachusetts to record their sole album, Philosophy Of The World, a collection of garage rock tunes that balanced charm and discordance in equal measure. Austin would spend most of his savings not only on the session but also on the manufacturing costs to press up 1,000 copies of the album (900 of which mysteriously vanished upon completion). Throughout Philosophy Of The World simple truths are revealed through the pen of sister Dot, the songwriter of the band. The rich people want what the poor people got, just as the poor people want what the rich people got. Your parents love you. There is happiness in nearness and sadness in the farness. The album failed to fulfill Austin's expectations of rock stardom, though the group remained together until their father's death, performing frequently at the Fremont town hall and a local nursing home, no further albums were released. That might have been the end of it, until rock band NRBQ discovered a copy at a Massachusetts radio station and re-released it in 1980. Rolling Stone's reviewer at the time described it as 'the most stunningly awful wonderful record I've heard in ages'. Nearly 50 years later, the album ranks among the most polarizing LPs of all time. Some said it was the worst thing ever made. Others felt it was one of the great long players of the 20th century. Frank Zappa famously dubbed the band 'better than The Beatles', while Kurt Cobain placed the album at #5 on his list of Top 50 favorite albums. Original copies of the album fetch for $10,000. Decades later and one could argue that maybe Austin was right all along. We're all here, still enthralled by the purity of The Shaggs. Liner notes by legendary musician, writer and compiler, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith, Nuggets). Book features unseen photos and ephemera. Artwork restored and expanded to a gatefold jacket. Newly remastered."

2016 repress. Originally released in 1969, this album is one of the most significant in Brazilian musical history, spearheading the musical Tropicalia revolution lead by Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, not to mention Gal Costa and mutant rockers Os Mutantes. Not only were the artists experimenting with the music, they were also making a very strong political statement that spoke out very harshly against the military regime in Brazil at the time. This album helped land Veloso and Gil a brief stint in jail and eventually in political exile in the UK. Includes bonus CD of the album.

CHRISTENSEN, MATT Honeymoons LP
LP version. Includes download code. Limited edition of 500. Matt Christensen, the singer and guitarist of atmospheric masterminds Zelienople, presents his solo album, Honeymoons. His most recent solo endeavor however embodies a song writer deeply involved with his own vision of sound, resulting in an accomplishment strong enough to stand on its own. Matt delivers a longing and emotional outreach through Honeymoons's six delicate songs and immersing into them provides a feeling of understanding and affiliation that turns solitude into a state of awareness and insight. The sparse instrumentation of broad guitar/effects and incisive drum machine adds immediacy to this recording and the airy arrangements keep the perfect balance between song structure, free-form playfulness and silence. Accompanied by Matt's echoing voice and personal lyrics, his recipe is being formed and dilated into an experience that requires devotion to be fully perceived and appreciated. "I'm See Through" may be the protagonist's self-perception but by guiding his compositions through foggy, pliant tone constellations he leaves us in doubt that Matt's output could ever be considered transparent. Honeymoons, his first album for Miasmah, is a perfect reminder of how interfering contradictions can make the most interesting installations. The confrontation of organic guitar movements, stirring poetry and patterns of beat arrangements create fascinating tension: Honeymoons's full scale won't unfold instantly but you will be captivated right away. The listener is allowed a deeply moving glance into a contemplative musician's mind by witnessing an outstanding statement for imparting the feeling of companionship.

G.H. Housebound Demigod 2LP
From the disputed border somewhere between Lancashire and Yorkshire, G.H. (Gary Howell) claims a no man's land where he is free to decimate distinctions between black metal and concrète techno by drawing upon an elusive, metaphysical force that's exclusively common to music rooted in that region; from Muslimgauze and Autechre thru Shackleton and Demdike Stare. The inarguably mongrel Housebound Demigod is G.H.'s debut solo album, following the Ground EP (2011) and his involvement with the hexed Pendle Coven project and HATE, alongside Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, respectively, between 2003-2009. It sounds like nothing out there; the result of countless hours at the grindstone, using sound as tonal therapy and a purely expressive sculptural material to best render the feel of his bleak but extraordinarily beautiful surroundings, with all the rugged texture and captivating aesthetic of some ancient cave graffiti. The album unfolds as a treacherous topography of boggy drones, entrenched sub-bass and deforested, windswept feedback, strewn with the charred remains of black metal in opener "Screaming Demon Pickups" and the hollow-eyed stare down of "Angels And Doormen", or prone to bury the senses with unpredictable slow techno mudslides in "Mickey Cosmos" or the subsidence of "Packhorse". He often underlines that physicality with a drily ambiguous wit; check the bitterly clipped narrative on "Yorkshire Fog", or, equally, when he puts all his weight behind the stylus-troubling, bestial shudder of "Devils Bit Scabious", and you can't shake the feeling that he's gurning like an evil loon behind the rotten torque of the album's titular parting shot. While ostensibly monotone and overcast, the devil is found in the album's subtleties of timing and mixing detail; riddled with phantasms that lurk and lash out from the crevices of its granite slabs and pitch black ravines, all placed at oblique angles in his surreally folded, labyrinthine and unheimlich sound-field. Recorded with a DR550, a battered Charvel guitar and assorted guitar pedals. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy, pressed at Pallas. RIYL: Nurse With Wound, Stephen O'Malley, Autechre, David Lynch, Shackleton.

VA Musique Concrete LP
Le Groupe de Recherches Musicales (The Group of Musical Research) of the O.R.T.F. (Office of the French Radio-Television) is known in the world principally as the promoter of an original technique of realization as well as reflection: Musique concrète. For more than fifty years, Le Groupe de Recherches Musicales has founded its experience, its methods of research and particular techniques, upon a confrontation between the musical act, reflection upon its elements, experimentation on sound sources, and the electro-acoustical means. Grouped around Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle, composers and researchers try to give new direction to musical activity through the conjugated action of a program of "Fundamental Research" on the languages of music (concrete, electronic, but also instrumental and oriental) and a program of "Expression", resulting in original compositions as well as essays for the ballet, theater, cinema, or television. In this LP, there are some great examples of the incredible production of many of the most celebrated composers of the movement: Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bernard Parmegiani, Ernst Krenek, Luc Ferrari and Ivo Malec along with Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle.

SIN FANG Spaceland CD
Leaving the rooted flora behind, Sin Fang, project of Sindri Már Sigfússon, glides into uncharted territory with his fourth full-length entitled Spaceland - a collection of electrified tunes that pack a soft punch. It's his idiosyncratic take on future R&B, one that doesn't mince matters and features various guests including Jónsi, Sóley, Pascal Pinon's Jófríður Ákadóttir and Farao. Spaceland is a deeply personal and 100% contemporary take on electronic pop. Recorded between L.A. and Reykjavík, it's an album that feels like diary entries spelled out like Billboard news headlines. But it's also a self-therapy made strangely infectious thanks to entirely new production means: Dark lyrics over electrified euphoria, personal confessions set to sizzling hi-hats and heavy bass action. "I wrote most of the lyrics after I started having panic attacks," he explains, adding that the album title actually refers to the headspace he was in during that period when he felt like he "was dying all the time". Mostly written on the piano, entirely self-recorded and self-produced (with support from Jónsi & Alex), Sin Fang thus ventures further into the direction he took with his new project Gangly. The same kind of push-and-pull, the same R&B-paced phrasings, a similar kind of juxtaposition is at work in "Not Ready For Your Love", a line Sindri repeats over and over, all sweet-voiced surrender set to uplifting arrangements and synthetic fields of bliss. "Lost Girl" oscillates between minimalism and experimentalism, magma-paced introspection and sonic sunlight that belies the darkness. Former Seabear band-mate Sóley is at his side for another slice of epic (anti migraine) pop ("Never Let Me Go"), while Norwegian singer Farao is another female sidekick in the land of loops and swathes: Drawing a face in the melting snow for "Please Don't", he picks up the pace with a hubbub of voices over a glacier-like arrangement. Towards the end, there's more playful beats ("Branches"), more open space ("Snowblind"), and finally, a homecoming of sorts: Slow moving album closer "Down" feat JFDR (that's Jófríður Ákadóttir) sounds like rays of hope rediscovered. Drifting too far away from the sun, it can get mighty cold out (and in) there, gloomy and cold, and yet that free-floating state of zero gravity can also lead to entirely new places.

ERNESTUS' NDAGGA RHYTHM FORCE, MARK Yermande LP
LP version. Five years in, with two acclaimed albums and dozens of international performances, Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force announces Yermande, a new phase for this Dakar?Berlin collaboration. "This time around I was better able to specify what I wanted right from the initial recording sessions in Dakar," says Ernestus, "... I took more freedom in reducing and editing audio tracks, changing MIDI data, replacing synth sounds and introducing electronic drum samples." Rather than submitting to the routine, discrete gradations of recording, producing and mixing, the music is tangibly permeated with deadly intent from the start. Lethally it plays a clipped, percussive venom and thumping bass against the soaring, open-throated spirituality of Mbene Seck's singing. The drumming is unpredictable, exclamatory, zinging with life. Likewise the production: intuitive and fresh but utterly attentive, limber but hefty. Six chunks of nextlevel mbalax - funky as anything. "Lamb Ji" is traditional wrestling, the most popular sport in Senegal, always introduced by hours of drumming, gris-gris magic and dancing (led by the fighters themselves). Born into the Momori griot clan in Tivaouane, Mbene moved to Pikine on the outskirts of Dakar, where Ndongo Lo was first to invite her to sing at lamb events. Here she pays homage to all the popular fighters of recent times. Evoking the ancient legacy of the griots, "Walo Walo" is also the name of the sabar rhythm underlying this track, which features Ibou Mbaye's percussive synthwork, Mangone Ndiaye Dieng's kit-drumming, and Bada Seck's jolts of lower-pitched thiol drum. "Simb" ("Lion") refers to traditional drumming and dancing events, at which a cavorting "faux lion" frightens the audience members. "Jigeen" means "Woman": "Man should know every woman is your mother. Cherish a woman. Respect a woman's dignity. Look after the people who were there when you had nothing." A tribute to the Baye Fall leader, "Ndiguel" is the most traditional cut, showcasing Assane Ndoye Cisse's insinuating guitar lines, Laye Lo's super?elasticated snare?drumming, and Bada Seck playing the khine drums associated with the Baye Fall. "Yermande" takes a former associate to task: "Stop prompting the witchdoctor to curse us. Leave people alone and let them go their own way. Take yours; leave ours to us" Like "Lamb Ji" and "Simb", featuring all four sabar players: Bada Seck, Serigne Mamoune Seck, Abou Salla Seck and Alioune Seck.

CAGE, JOHN Darmstadt Aural Documents - Box 2 CD
Repressed. "Late summer, 1958. For the first time the American composer John Cage attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. As so often in those years, he was accompanied by the pianist David Tudor, and together they gave the European premieres of his Music for Two Pianos, Winter Music and Variations I. John Cage's first appearance in Darmstadt, in 1958, was a red-letter event in the history of music (his second and last appearance there would not take place until 1990, two years before his death). With his three lectures in particular he cracked open the little world of contemporary music, sowing the seeds for a rich, burgeoning, heterogeneous landscape of sound with many different concepts of what music is and can be. The 'Communication' lecture of 1958 is, by the way, the only one of Cage's three Darmstadt lectures that exists in the archive of the Darmstadt International Institute of Music in the form of an audio document, minus the opening minutes. There is no way of knowing today why the other two lectures, 'Changes' and 'Indeterminacy,' were not tape-recorded, or whether the recordings later disappeared." Performed by John Cage, voice and piano; David Tudor, piano.

Terje powers out a pair of dance floor reboots, in disco and dub form. Bobby Spice rearranges the original into a limber funk freestyle complete with cocktail sipping crowd sounds, balloon rubbing bassoons and seesawing organs. Bjorn Torske takes the reins, pulling the original apart and reassembling it into a sunset spectacular awash with croaking guiro, tropical bird calls and spaced-out slap bass.

ONE TRACK BRAIN Private Sky EP 12"
One Track Brain delivers Private Sky EP. "Private Sky" is inspired by the artist Calder. Eerie sounds (derived from samples of oil vessels) evoke his moving sculptures, while the industrial groove mimics the artist's at work in his atelier. "Temple" sucks the listener in like quicksand. The chords come up like a thick mist. "Hoo Too" is structured around a heavily effected "whistle solo" which sounds like the rain forest after a heavy rainfall. "Charm" features a lead again made by whistling and sound processing - a party in the micro-cosmos. Artwork by 88888 is inspired by Calder's moving structures.

EXCITEMENTS, THE Breaking The Rule CD
When notorious workaholics of rhythm The Excitements finally ended the two-year, 200-show international tour that followed the 2013 release of their second album, Sometimes Too Much Ain't Enough (PENN 004CD/LP), they immediately threw their road-sharpened repertoire into the studio to record their finest album to date, Breaking The Rule. This third album confirms that the big combo from Barcelona can do whatever they please -- caress you, kick you in the stomach, or both. The steamroller rhythm section pounds under searing guitars and roaring horns while vocalist Koko claws at their hypnotic gyrations with wild abandon. Breaking The Rule offers high-voltage rhythm-and-soul floor-shakers and lease-breakers ("Everything Is Better Since You've Gone," "Fire," "Hold On Together"), ripping, spear-hurling R&B numbers ("Chicken Pickin'," "Did I Let You Down"), heartbreaking mid-tempo ballads ("Breaking The Rule," "Take It Back"), and a pair of rhythmic postcards: a tribute to the noisy streets of New Orleans ("The Mojo Train") and restless nights in a Havana boarding house ("Four Loves"). Inside this explosive cocktail of sonic chaos, a strange, sweet harmony prevails through each and every groove. And as always, it's all wrapped up, signed, sealed, and delivered with the elegantly filthy production of Mike Mariconda.

FUNKEES, THE Now I'm A Man CD
PMG present a reissue of The Funkees's Now I'm A Man, originally released in 1976. Has there ever been a band as aptly named as The Funkees? Formed after the Biafran War to raise spirits in the east, they quickly conquered the dance floors of Lagos and in 1973 headed to London, playing at Ronnie Scott's and tearing up the local scene. Now I'm A Man captures the band at the height of their London-era pomp. Africans were making soca, West Indians were playing Afro-funk and discolypso blasted from boom-boxes across West London. The Funkees soaked it all up and delivered it back - funkier, tighter and louder. Bookended by two Santana-esque jams, "I'm A Man" and "303", The Funkees second album delivers slow burning Afro-beat ("Mimbo"), urgent jungle bongo chants ("Salam") and straight-ahead floor-fillers ("Dance With Me"). Little wonder that legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, recorded two sessions with them. The Funkees soon disbanded after this album; Jake Sollo joined Osibisa, Sonny Akpabio and Harry Mosco pursued successful solo careers. Now I'm A Man shows The Funkees as they burned brightly as Nigeria's most talented, inventive and funky band.

KITAJIMA, OSAMU Benzaiten CD
Psychedelic Sounds International present a reissue of Osamu Kitajima's Benzaiten, originally released in 1976. Benzaiten is world music and ethno sounds with an obvious Japanese origin, meeting progressive rock and psych rock. The result is a captivating piece of melodic and deeply atmospheric music that paints pictures of life in ancient Japan. If Pink Floyd were Japanese, their music might have sounded like this album. The frequency of the arrangements on Benzaiten is reminiscent of what English prog bands created in the early to mid '70s, just with a different ethnical approach. Benzaiten is even a more progressive effort than anything most British bands have ever managed to fabricate and is still utterly natural and vivid concerning the flow of the music. All participating musicians here are professionals and their performances are tight and still passionate. The sound is warm and vivid and the song structures are wide open and welcoming. Electronic elements in the percussion section add some oddity to the whole musical picture. The cool aspect of Benzaiten is the rocking guitar which keeps the whole album together. Must be the Japanese equivalent to German acts like Amon Düül II, Embryo and Guru Guru.

Drawing pop influence from The Beatles but filtered through a crunchy, guitar heavy prog sound that is indebted to Procol Harum, Yes, Genesis, and Camel, and of course, the Brazilian heroes Os Mutantes. WEDDING PRESENT, THE Going, Going... CD+DVD
Going, Going..., the ninth studio album from UK indie darlings The Wedding Present, tells the story of a road trip across the USA, revealed across a collection of twenty "linked" songs, each with an accompanying short film. As David Gedge points out, work began soon after the 2012 album Valentina (SCOPITONE 037CD), "I'd already decided by then that I didn't want to make the next release just 'another album' and so I came up with the idea of twenty 'interconnected' pieces of music. In the summer 2014, I traveled across the USA with photographer Jessica McMillan and we made some atmospheric short films to accompany the tracks. Since then it's been a case of progressing through the music, trying all sorts of ideas, seeing how they work set against the visuals." Uncharacteristically, the album opens with four hauntingly beautiful instrumental songs, including the cinematic "Sprague" and the captivating "Marblehead". Going, Going... then takes a head-long dash through tracks such as "Two Bridges", "Birdsnest", "Kill Devil Hills" and "Broken Bow", all perfectly executed in classic Wedding Present fashion; a jangle of clanging guitars, a squeal of feedback and a rush of adrenaline. With "Little Silver", "Bear", "Lead" and "Rachel" he proves yet again that he is a virtuoso when it comes to the bittersweet love song; his knack for a simple turn of phrase perfectly articulating the banalities and ecstasies of a relationship. Whilst they are the undoubted masters of frenetic indie-pop, The Wedding Present re-route momentarily on "Emporia" and "Wales" before ultimately immersing the listener in an epic album finale with "Santa Monica". Throughout this enchanting album, ambient soundscapes and orchestral pop arrangements jostle for position with layers of feedback drenched guitars, pummeling drums and a truly massive bass sound as the band plays some of the heaviest material they have ever recorded. The films that accompany each track are a mesmerizing collection of moving photographs. The rippling water in "Marblehead" delicately draws us into the melody while "Two Bridges" takes us onto a Manhattan street corner and exudes New York City in the summertime. The feeling of a road trip is present throughout with the rivers and lakes of the mid-west and the deserts of the south-west before the album ends with the sun setting over the Santa Monica mountains. CD version includes a DVD.

MILLS, SIMON Sunset Hours Vol. 3 CD
Simon Mills compiles the third installment of the Sunset Hours series, a collection of compilation albums inspired by the breathtaking views from Marini's On 57 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The series began when Ibiza legend Jose Padilla was asked to compile a compilation after he travelled to Malaysia and played at the venue. As the highest rooftop bar in Malaysia, the venue offers outstanding views over the city from its location close to the world famous Petronas Towers. In 2015, the second volume was overseen by a partnership of Chris Coco & Afterlife. Sunset Hours Vol. 3 has been put together by Simon Mills, who is famously one half of the wonky electronic duo Bent. The album consists of 14 hand selected tracks that capture the mood and atmosphere of the Sunset over the Malaysian capital perfectly. After opening with the excellent "I Can Breathe" by Dekoi Simon treats the listener to one of his own productions, this time in his Napoleon guise, with the exclusive track "Interstellar Joyride" that helps set the mood with quirky synth runs and a warm analog bass line. There's a track from Robi Insinna's alter ego project Manhead and "Dreaming Of Love" from Chris Coco before Farbror Resonde Mac's "Tinden's Tand" gives a flavor of the Balearics islands. Swedish based HNNY is also included with the excellent "Cheer Up My Brother". Other highlights include the timeless "What About This Love (Dub Version)" from the super talented Mr Fingers aka house music legend Larry Heard, a new Simon Mills remix of Jose Padilla & Chris Zippel's "Akamundo", another exclusive track "Meeting Point", the outstanding Yam Who? remix of Julian Sanza's "Sunset" before closing with a track from Bent's Ariels (2004), "Exercise 4". AYLER QUARTET, ALBERT Ghosts CD
Skokiaan presents a reissue of Albert Ayler Quartet's Ghosts, originally released in 1965. Ghosts, by free jazz master Albert Ayler and his quartet, is a classic. Ghosts is some of the most intriguing and wicked music ever experienced. Ayler and his mates, Don Cherry on trumpet, Sonny Murray on drums and Gary Peacock on bass guitar, are definitely on par with the other free jazz gods like John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. From a pop music perspective, this may be only screeching and overblown saxes and some non-structured fiddling on drums and bass, so that it's far different than the average mainstream. But if the listener has a fondness for soundscapes, improvisations and music that creates more of an atmosphere rather than fluffy melodies, this is a great record. From time to time, Ayler and his band start with straight melody lines and soon let it all run free before partly returning to recognizable and memorable melodies. On the title track, Ayler plays some sweet and swinging sax harmonies while drums and bass still rumble and blast completely improvised lines in the back. The composition named "Vibrations" is another of these outbursts of insanity. Ayler and Cherry duel each other for the most free and twisted player. Murray pounds the kettles and cymbals like a maniac and Peacock joins in on standing bass. Ghosts is an ongoing rumbling and definitely strange. Free jazz fanatics will surely love Ghosts. For fans of Coltrane and Coleman, this is a must have.

MURRAY, SONNY Sonny's Time Now CD
Skokiaan present a reissue of Sonny Murray's Sonny's Time Now, originally released in 1965. Only a few months after recording Ghosts (SKOK 001CD, 1965) with Albert Ayler, Sonny Murray released his first album as a leader. Sonny's Time Now is one of the holy grails for collectors and aficionados of free avant garde jazz music from the 1960s. This 2016 vinyl reissue is the first vinyl reissue of the album in 30 years. The last CD reissue was in 1991. Albert Ayler and his Ghosts album from 1965 was already a hard thing to swallow, except for the most adventurous explorers of the furthest corners of the border districts of music. An unconventional view on onomatopoeia is necessary to enter this world and drummer Sonny Murray went another step ahead on Sonny's Time Now. The lengthy piece "Virtue" presents an ever pulsating wall of rhythm that sounds like a wuthering ocean with the horn section going nuts on top. The saxes and trumpets are constantly erupting and it is a challenge for the listener to find the melodies among their output of sound. "Justice", another lengthy piece divided into two parts, continues the quest "Virtue" began. The atmosphere of these free improvisations slowly swallows the listener and the shrieks of the saxophones and trumpets, frees souls from physical bodies. What feels like an impenetrable thicket of sound at first is soon enlightening and a memorable structure within all the chaos. The same year that John Coltrane took the last step away from traditional jazz and music in general, this album was equally as radical but seems to have disappeared within the depths of music history. The most radical piece on this record comes with the shorter "Black Art", a writing by activist and controversial poet Amiri Baraka, aka LeRoy Jones, is underlined with freak-out eruptions from Sonny Murray and his mates. This is the right soundtrack for a cathartic meditation. For a must have for fans of Coltrane. "The Lie" is not featured on the original release.

ASHBY, DOROTHY The Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby CD
Spellbound Music present a reissue of Dorothy Ashby's sixth album, The Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby, originally released in 1965. Ashby was a Detroit born jazz harpist who passed away in her early 50s in 1986. She left a rich legacy of music with The Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby being one of her milestones. The music is purely bright and swinging with a joyful mood. Dorothy Ashby is always there upfront while the brass section mostly fills the background with color. Typical for the ancient jazz, there are no vocals on this record but this only adds to the depth and intriguing atmosphere of the music. Ashby starts where Coltrane left the field of real song-oriented albums for his experimental efforts and she really pulls it off. The Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby is haunting but with a rather relaxed approach to this style. For the time it was released, this album was an utterly progressive effort and the pop sensibility of many tracks make it a great joy to spin. Jazz fans will dig it and open minded people who love the music of the '60s will also develop a fondness for this beauty.

CAGE, JOHN Early Electronic and Tape Music CD
Repressed. "I believe the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard." --John Cage, 1937."Although John Cage occasionally worked in large, sophisticated studios -- for example, when he composed 'Fontana Mix' in 1958 -- his approach to electronic and tape music was often uncomplicated, makeshift, and pragmatic, employing simple tabletop devices: tape machines, phonograph cartridges, contact microphones, record players, portable radios, etc. He developed a soundworld that was utterly new, radical and demanding. It heralded the age of the loudspeaker, mass communication and Marshall McLuhan's 'global village.' The hiss, crackle and hum of electronic circuits, and the disembodied sounds, snatched by radio from the ether, spoke of the 20th century. Langham Research Centre works within the tradition firmly established by Cage, using resources that would have been available to him. For the realization of Cartridge Music, moving iron phonograph pickups were sourced and restored. These have a knurled screw designed to hold a steel phonograph needle and, in the piece, other objects are inserted and amplified: pieces of wire, toothpicks, paperclips, etc. The realization of 'Fontana Mix' includes the individual mono tracks from Cage's original tapes created in 1958. These are played using open-reel tape machines. These practices ensure we work within the limitations that Cage experienced and enable us to get close to the soundworld he inhabited." --Robert Worby, Langham Research Centre

RADIONICS RADIO An Album Of Musical Radionic Thought Frequencies CD
Daniel Wilson's Radionics Radio project draws upon the fringe-science of radionics, with its invisible forces and psychic resonances, to spawn electroacoustic and electronic compositions employing very alternative tuning systems. Radionics's idea that thoughts can be represented as frequencies is vigorously explored on An Album Of Musical Radionic Thought Frequencies through microtonal compositions which range from mutating drones to electronic sambas, with nods to Raymond Scott and Daphne Oram along the way. In 1962, Oxford's Delawarr Laboratories built their groundbreaking multi-oscillator instrument comprising multiple electronic tone generators. The multi-oscillator was the summation of all Delawarr Laboratories's acoustical research into radionics. It was a strange instrument far ahead of its time. In a process best described as "dowsing with oscillators," the unorthodox device was employed intuitively to select clusters of frequencies that embodied thoughts, ailments or concepts. The Laboratory submitted an application to broadcast the resulting thought-frequency tones over the radio, but were denied a broadcasting license. In 2014, Resonance FM's Sound and Music Embedded Composer in Residence Daniel Wilson launched Radionics Radio. Through an online app replicating Delawarr's multi-oscillator, users submitted their own thoughts and frequencies for radio broadcast. Along with a dozen original works, an exclusive 1968 tape recording of the original multi-oscillator is also featured on this CD. Daniel Wilson, who records under the alias Meadow House and performs in electroacoustic quartet Oscillatorial Binnage, has long been interested in composing with found physical objects and working within the restrictive tunings offered by those objects. Radionics Radio is an extension of this: the submitted thought-frequencies are themselves "found objects", each with their own unique harmonic worlds. All sounds heard in the Radionics Radio compositions are strictly derived only from the respective submitted thought-frequencies. This is an album unlike any other, and, if radionic theory is to be believed, one that contains more than the sum of its parts.

FALL, THE Slates 10"
"If The Fall truly is a cult band, then Slates both benefits from and reinforces such shrouded obsessions. In presenting these six particular songs as a 10" EP, the inherent and attractive difficulty of The Fall's sound is made physical, framing the urgency of their singles from this period alongside lengthy rumblings normally restricted to long players. The tumbling and phased 'Middle Mass' begins on an incredible high note, segueing into the snake-charm hypnotism of 'An Older Lover Etc.' 'Slates, Slags, Etc.' is built on stretched VU-inspired riffing, complete with ace feedback bleed that doubtlessly went on long after fade-out. Ultimately, it's the piercing chimes of guitar and marching drum grind of 'Prole Art Threat' that elevates Slates beyond oddity. Truly one of Mark E. Smith's finest, busiest and most enigmatic performances, equally matched by a band at the peak of their powers. Superior Viaduct's edition is the first time that Slates has been available on vinyl domestically since its initial release in 1981. Liner notes by Brian Turner."

MONOCHROME SET, THE Cosmonaut CD
At the end of the '70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of "post-punk" bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from '80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. In later years, this praise has continued with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as "timeless", and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continued gaining admirers. The Monochrome Set is black & white, at the same time, with no grey. That's what the name always meant - delivering mirth and melancholy, pleasure and panic, delight and dread, wrapped up in tuneful pop songs with curious lyrics. The band seem to occupy a parallel universe, with a rich panoply of sounds and words, all somehow evocative of something just beyond reach or remembrance - yet the songs have an immediate simplicity and power. Cosmonaut, the band's 13th album, is a perfect example of this exhilarating mix. The title track opens with a Theremin cyber fly buzzing towards your skull before the song hits, launching you into a mirror dimension that is both familiar and alien. The whole album is a trip that starts with a hallucinating cash-till lady, then travels through dream-sets involving cannibalism, disaffected squirrels, strange gods, dying sweethearts, sexual depravity, Alzheimer's, backward evolution, and ends in an operating theatre, amid a sea of medical tentacles. In short, a camping holiday. The trademark Monochrome Set guitar is ever-present, but this time complemented by delightfully busy keyboards, which give an added richness and spice to the album. In just 30 minutes, Cosmonaut catapults the listener into orbit and takes them on a zany, hallucinogenic joyride - not in outer space as it turns out, but in and around the arcane and fantastical recesses of Bid's imagination. Cosmonaut comes with minimal risk of explosion, persistent floatiness and no disappointing space food.

ACCIDENT DU TRAVAIL Tres Precieux Sang LP
Repressed. "Terrific record! Eight charged, intimate meditations by Julie Normal and Olivier Demeaux, playing a rickety ondes Martenot and an old church harmonium. Gripping, detailed, stately improvisation -- a bit like the ùrlars in classical bagpipe music -- which nervily mixes the sternly doom-laden with precarious, other-worldly wonderment. (The ondes Martenot is an amazing twentieth-century instrument -- beloved by Messiaen, for example, and Varese. The theme-song of Star Trek is a vocal forgery of its sound. 'J'aime cette fragilité qui côtoie la capacité de te décoller le tympan sur certaines fréquences inopinément,' says Julie. 'Je tiens une bombe dans les mains. J'aime son instabilité, son humanité.') Wood, breath, blood, eggshells... on the night of a purple moon. Very warmly recommended."

REZZETT Doyce 12"
"Rezzett mark the fifth full frontal outing on TTT with Doyce, a slow burner tech cruncher that comes backed with one of the rare dreamlike yavas mixes on the flip. Despite coming littered with all the trademark Rezzett flashes of sound, fizzing raw atmospherics and broken jungle oil drums, Doyce shows off a more melancholic side to the unit than previously heard before. Doyce is fizzy in strength but slows the tempo slowed down to a hearbeat pulse. On the reverse they follow the Zootie sheen with another yavas mix, removing the beats and letting the hazy glow of the backdrop carry the vibe through till morning." --Bleep

MULERO, OSCAR Hyperbolic Paths EP 12"
Oscar Mulero, a one-man techno institution, is back with Hyperbolic Paths EP, another solo four track contribution that feels like classic Mulero. "Hyperbolic Paths" is simultaneously deep and bleepy, accented by hi-hats in syncopation. The tom-heavy "Suborbital Trajectories" carries a serious groove, layered with lively melodic elements and an occasional unexpected statement cymbal crash. A haunting and hypnotic number, "Inclination" swells and increases in intensity, rolling on after its breakdown with a playful kick-clap interaction. "Eccentricity" is a spacious, dubby closing track with reverb-soaked ornamental splashes.

DERBYSHIRE AND ELSA STANSFIELD, DELIA Circle Of Light LP
A highly important previously unreleased soundtrack for Circle Of Life, created in 1972 by musician Delia Derbyshire and artist Elsa Stansfield. The soundtrack is a mix of concrete ideas, sound design, tape manipulation, natural environmental sounds and birdsong. The recording was originally commissioned by director, producer and art collector Anthony Roland for his 1972 film about the slides of radical stills photographer Pamela Bone. The film has been rarely seen and the soundtrack has never been released until now. This is the longest known work by Delia Derbyshire - either alone or in association with anyone else - and has been licensed by Trunk Records exclusively worldwide from the Anthony Roland archive/collection. Mastered by Jon Brooks, AKA The Advisory Circle. Full color single LP sleeve. Single LP on standard black wax.

ADAMS, RONDELL Threshold To Madness 12"
Threshold To Madness is a jacking EP from Rondell Adams, a musician/selector from Gary, Indiana. The son of Jackson 5's first producer, Rondell's club ready material follows the best of Chicago underground vibes like Gherkin Jerks, Marcus Mixx and Trax Records. In the dizzy off-key "The Wizard Of Move" the seasoned producer flexes his tom-tom muscle whereas the city chords of "Megaplexxx" and the flange flight of "Take Off" will push the crowd into dance move frenzy. Rondell Adams - the colorful new sound of Ultramajic.

ROSE, JACK Raag Manifestos LP
Gatefold sleeve. Includes download code. "Part of a collaboration with Jack Rose's estate and Three Lobed Records to restore all of his LPs to print, VHF presents new vinyl editions of the celebrated guitarist's first three solo albums, newly cut by John Golden Mastering from the original source material. Originally issued on LP by Eclipse Records between 2002-04, these releases chart an eclectic, more experimental approach left behind as his technique and compositions became more refined and deliberate on later works like Kensington Blues. Originally compiled from a variety of sources as a limited-edition CD to sell on tour in 2004 (released by VHF, later released on vinyl by Eclipse), Raag Manifestos presents much of Rose's rawest and most experimental music, cutting across various acoustic styles, but with a much more jagged and aggressive attack than later music. "Black Pearls from the River" and "Hart Crane's Old Boyfriends" are dense, serious assaults on the 12-string, with the intensity of the latter enhanced by Ian Nagoski's roaring electronic backdrop. With subtle tabla accompaniment by Eric Carbonara, "Crossing The Great Waters" is another epic modal journey in the style of Pelt's "Road To Catawba" and Rose's own "Red Horse." The traditional "Blessed Be the Name of the Lord" finishes off the LP on a calming note."

ROSE, JACK Red Horse, White Mule LP
Includes download code. "Part of a collaboration with Jack Rose's estate and Three Lobed Records to restore all of his LPs to print, VHF presents new vinyl editions of the celebrated guitarist's first three solo albums, newly cut by John Golden Mastering from the original source material. Originally issued on LP by Eclipse Records between 2002-04, these releases chart an eclectic, more experimental approach left behind as his technique and compositions became more refined and deliberate on later works like Kensington Blues. Rose's 2002 solo debut Red Horse, White Mule was a bit of an outlier in the underground gestalt at the time, coming just before the wave of releases from the new generation of Takoma- / Fahey-inspired players. Strictly a solo affair, Red Horse balances the epic, side-long raga of "Red Horse" against a second side of shorter pieces, including the ragged slide style of "The Colonel's Blues." The compositions and performances incorporate the new and the classic with a rough-hewn charm."

ROSE, JACK Opium Musick LP
Includes download code. "Part of a collaboration with Jack Rose's estate and Three Lobed Records to restore all of his LPs to print, VHF presents new vinyl editions of the celebrated guitarist's first three solo albums, newly cut by John Golden Mastering from the original source material. Originally issued on LP by Eclipse Records between 2002-04, these releases chart an eclectic, more experimental approach left behind as his technique and compositions became more refined and deliberate on later works like Kensington Blues. Recorded and originally released in 2003, Opium Musick is an eclectic collection with pieces for 12-string (the percussive and dark "Black Pearls"), 6-string, and lap guitar. The lovely raga-ish "Yaman Blues" features Mike Gangloff (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers) on tanpura, and echoes the extended modal work on Pelt's contemporaneous Pearls From The River. The near-ragtime of "Linden Ave Stomp" showcases Glenn Jones on his vintage Gibson in a jumping duet with Rose's lap steel. "Linden Ave" charted a path that Rose would determinedly pursue -- short ragtime and old-time influenced pieces (originals and classics), with all phrasing worked out to a perfectionist standard. The lovely "Mountaintop Lamento" was memorably used in Catherine Pancake's film about coal mining in Appalachia, Black Diamonds: Mountaintop Removal and the Fight for Coalfield Justice."

BROWN, DENNIS The Crown Prince CD
"The Crown Prince is the follow-up to Beautiful Morning, Dennis Brown's first album for the World Records label. Although some of the titles may sound familiar from other artists' hits -- 'Candy Girl' and 'Cheri Amour' included -- none of the tracks are actually covers. Instead, this set is comprised mostly of new numbers alongside a few old songs, beautifully re-recorded."
