SPACE ART Trip In The Center Head LP+CD
Because Music present a reissue of Space Art's Trip In The Center Head, originally released in 1978. Space Art, the duo of Roger Rizzitelli and Dominique Perrier, is a legendary group that is considered a great pioneer of French electronic music. Perrier, having collaborated with Michel Fugain and Il Etait Une Fois, is one of legend Jean-Michel Jarre's closest collaborators. Dominique discovered the very first synthesizer ARP (Odyssey) which he was taken with so much that he created his own band, Space Art, aside his good friend drummer Rizitelli. This curious band endorsed tight and opaque costumes of decontamination which covered their bodies and masked their faces. In 1977, "Onyx", recorded in Studio Ferber mixed by René Hameline, became a very successful single. Issued from the album Space Art (BEC 5156240), the single sold over three million copies worldwide. Two albums shortly followed, in 1979, Trip To The Center Head then in 1980, Play Back (BEC 5156239). Space Art is behind the massive hits: "Onyx", "Give Me Love", "Love In C Minor" and more. Space Art's legacy is the true "techno trance". A keyboard virtuoso, Perrier worked on all of Jarre's albums from Rendez-Vous (1986) to Oxygène 7- 1 (1997) and still tours with him around the world. Space Art toured with Jarre in China in the early '80s. Alongside Jean-Michel Jarre and Cerrone, Space Art are considered one of the pioneers of electro music. One of three Space Art LP reissues, along with Play Back and Space Art, all cut from the long-awaited 2010 digital remasters and presented for the first time on vinyl. Considering the success of the Cosmic Machine compilations, French proto-electro is being revisited by fans of electronic music and being given well-deserved attention. Comes in printed cardboard sleeve with CD included.

FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS, LEE Special Night CD
"There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn't fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is in fact a living legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term 'retro-soul' when talking about Mr. Fields. You don't have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era they've only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. Special Night is a masterclass in soul music past and present. 'I feel that every human being's purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do,' says Lee Fields. 'And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out music and keeping making better records.' Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering. Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. 'When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I'm talking to my lady -- literally, expressing the way I feel,' says Lee Fields. 'You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I'm recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life.' For one example, he cites the song 'Work to Do,' which tells the story of 'a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing.' On 'Make This World', Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. 'The world was designed to last indefinitely,' says Fields. 'We're the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I'm hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through.' As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the boundaries 'Never Be Another You' from the first note doesn't sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A low tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of 2017. Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it."

UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS Units And Measurements 2LP
Units And Measurements is the collaborative project of Christopher Hreno, Mathew Jonson and Colin de la Plante. The project sees these long times friends and veteran producers exploring the limits of hardware based improvisation and deep synthesis and effects programing. Documenting a single epic 24 hour session at Jonson's mothership studio in Berlin, this first release sees the trio exploring some of the headiest ambient and tunneling hypnotic techno to be found in any of their admittedly vast individual back catalogs. This release is without question a portrait of three masters of their craft at work, and quite unlike anything else. Beautifully packaged in deluxe gatefold design with artwork by Uruguayan artist Alejandro Garcia.

THEOREME L'appel Du Midi A Midi Pile LP
Bruit Direct Disques continues down the path of no-fucks-given with yet another ace from a deck already heaping with bewildering gems. In much the same way as Pier Paolo Pasolini's film Theoreme (1968) once fizzled the corneas of the prim, Theoreme, the artist, is here to singe ears on this blistering solo debut. Laying down all the instrumentation and vocals herself, Theoreme posits that spectres of the past continue to resonate in the contemporaneous milieu of the underground. This isn't some Erik Von Daniken Chariots Of The Gods bullshit - it's the fucking truth. Deep inside the angular ingenuity of this chef d'oeuvre are subtle sonic vectors, analogous to Gutura, SIC and the corrosive side of the German label Zickzack; Channeled or not, the adage remains, "Great minds think alike". It's not definite that the French invented propositional logic, but they sure do guzzle it down. And Theoreme's right there - two-fisted, bellied up and ready for guzzling. You want a cold war? Well son, here it is. Have at it.

SILVER APPLES The Garden LP
LP version. Dubs of Silver Apple's third album, which had been mysteriously unaccounted for, were found in a cardboard box in drummer Danny Taylor's attic. The remarkable reunion of the original duo of Simeon Coxe and Taylor hadn't been planned. After 27 years apart, they were reunited when a disc jockey at New Jersey's legendary WFMU radio station received a phone call from Taylor for the station's pledge drive. Taylor had been out of the music business for years, and his call put the pieces in place for Simeon to forge a renewed excitement for the Silver Apples's earliest recordings. The recordings included seven complete songs from 1969 and seven drum instrumentals by Taylor in 1968. Taylor's 1968 drumming demos were blended with Coxe's 1998 "Noodle" efforts.

LUCIANI, RICCARDO A. Inchiesta Sul Mondo 2LP
Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Riccardo A. Luciani's Inchiesta Sul Mondo, originally released in 1976. Inchiesta Sul Mondo is a double experimental concept album, mainly electronic, based on topical problems of the period in which it was released, the mid-70s. The two records have two different arguments: Stati D'animo ("States On Mind") and Diagnosi Ecologica ("Ecological Diagnosis"). Maestro Luciani is a well-known artist in the library music scene. His very personal style is the result of musical studies from a childhood that allowed him to achieve a diploma in composition, choral music, choral conducting and more. The avant-garde and contemporary classical approach links him to artists like Egisto Macchi. Another point of contact between the two is the label that produced this double album, Ayna, which Macchi was a partner in. The album comes in a heavy cardboard gatefold cover with an original photo of the maestro inside.

LUCIANI, MARIA TERESA Free Jazz LP
Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Maria Teresa Luciani's Free Jazz. Originally pressed in 1972 in Italy by Le Monde, a label which has in its catalog only six titles released in few copies for radio and TV, Free Jazz is an insanely rare library music masterpiece. Absolutely the hottest, weirdest, psych-jazz album of the era. Maria Teresa Luciani is the sister of Maestro Riccardo A. Luciani. The only known members of the session are the great Gino Marinacci on flute, here on his most obscure recording session, and Riccardo A. Luciani on all piano, Fender Rhodes and treated keyboard delays. The whole album is outstanding, with various moods and atmospheres - from the groovy fuzz distortions of "Logaritmo In Do", the funky drums and jazzy psychedelia of "Free Flute In Beat", the modal cum spiritual jazz of "Playing For Fun", the frantic rhythms of "Traffico Caotico" and "Crazy Morning", the amazing hard bop on "Fotogrammi", the experimental jazz on "Walking In The Night" and "Free Jazz" to the beautiful "Free Flute" theme. Outrageous drum skills, electric piano played with a wah-wah pedal, studio effects, echo delays and psychedelic themes. All covers of this reissue are unique and unrepeatable with orange and black splashes of paint. Copies are numbered and include a download code.

JUNKFOOD & ENRICO GABRIELLI Italian Masters LP
Enrico Gabrielli and the members of Junkfood have crossed several times in the past in a variety of contexts and collaborations, but never have the two entities been found under the same roof. The occasion is revealed thanks to the Festival HalloBigallo in 2014, dedicated to Piero Umiliani, inviting both to perform with the prayer to include some readings in personnel key from the repertoire of the Maestro. After that pleasant experience, Junkfood and Gabrielli agreed to meet at the Vacuum Studio of Bruno Germano in Bologna. Italian Masters is dedicated to the figures of some of the greatest Italian composers of film scores. The result exceeds expectations: the beautiful music of Umiliani, Morricone and Trovajoli are distorted and filtered by the sensitivity of the five, while maintaining their unmistakable identity. What is most striking is the incredible consistency throughout despite the different authorship of the compositions and wide range of situations and solutions the musicians themselves bring into the music. The quintet succeed in the difficult task of standing comparison to models and simultaneously developing their own poetic and independent sound, making Italian Masters a real gem not only for the fanatics of film music, but for newbies calling to those ones shores lured by the sirens of Gabrielli and Junkfood. Personnel: Enrico Gabrielli - saxophone, bass clarinet, flute; Paolo Raineri - trumpet, flugelhorn, effects; Michelangelo Vanni - electric guitar, effects; Simone Calderoni - electric bass, effects; Simone Cavina - drums, effects. "C'eravamo Tanto Amati Da" features Edda Dell'Orso. Limited numbered edition of 300 on multicolored vinyl.

BACALOV, LUIS ENRIQUEZ L'amica LP
Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Luis Enriquez Bacalov's soundtrack for L'amica, originally released in 1969. L'amica is an intriguing Alberto Lattuada film starring Lisa Gastoni (portrayed in the cover photo of the LP), Gabriele Ferzetti, Elsa Martinelli, Ray Lovelock, Jean Sorel and Frank Wolff. The music is by one of the greatest pianists, composers, conductors and arrangers in the world of soundtracks, the Argentine naturalized Italian, Luis Enríquez Bacalov. Bacalov has authored music for countless high-level films including La Seduzione (1973) Quién Sabe? (1966), Django (1966), Roma Bene (1971) and Milano Calibro 9 (1972). He also won an Oscar for The Postman (1995). The soundtrack of L'amica from the title track highlights the excellent piano technique and the jazz vein of the maestro mixed with exotic and erotic atmospheres characterized by extraordinary orchestration, harp, congas and the typical persuasive vocalism of those years (all by the great Nora Orlandi). It's followed by "Rio, Zona Sul", refined samba-jazz on a massive percussive tapestry. "'Round Nassau" offers an elegant and dreamy atmosphere in Les Baxter's style adding flute and female wordless vocals. "Swingin' Easy In Tanganyika" is another extraordinary jazzy piano and drums with flute melody sideways. The side is closed by a previously unpublished version of the theme that was not included on the original Fonit Cetra LP. The B-side rearranges the themes in a more melancholy and symphonic style without renouncing jazz as in the gem "Episodio In 3/4". The ballad "The Bitter Truth" is sung by Fiorenza Mormile in English. Recorded at Italian RCA studios with engineer Sergio Marcotulli. Includes two bonus tracks not on the original release.

CIPRIANI, STELVIO Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto LP
Cinedelic Records present Stelvio Cipriani's soundtrack for Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto (1977). "A tough, funky '70s instrumental score that perfectly fits the insane violence of this seldom-seen Lee Van Cleef hitman film! Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto ('The Perfect Killer') is one of the wildest and sleaziest Euro-crime movies ever made; it ultimately was made with Lee Van Cleef as the star and featuring such sexualized violence as a female getting shot in her nether regions, a straight-razor fight with trans women and some rapes that make you feel more uneasy than do most. But no rundown of the 'stars' of this film could be complete without mentioning Stelvio Cipriani's funk score. Mind you, the '70s was already a funky decade of music, just as the Euro-crime genre was already a violent and sexual movement of cinema. But both Cipriani's score and the film pushed together to find new extremes of funkiness and raunchiness. Normally if someone hears playing '70s instrumental funk says, 'What is this? It sounds like porno music!' well, that's grounds for departing from his or her presence, perhaps not to return. It's terribly limited thinking to associate all instrumental funk from the decade with smut movies. And yet, I must confess there's a certain sleaziness (and I use that word lovingly) in Cipriani's Maledetto title track that perfectly evokes the on-screen tawdriness to come. The wah guitar. The prominent electric bass. The slithering, laid-back horns. It's an ingenious groove and yet dripping with sleaze. And even though there's a laconic mid-tempo quality to the title theme, there's also something that drives it steadily forward. And that perfectly captures the doggedness and determination of Van Cleef's hitman character, who constantly pushes forward in his quest, even after he's been betrayed by his former partner, his new criminal organization and his woman. (In fact, it was Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto that crystalized in my mind how well the Euro-crime genre worked when operating within these 'one man against the world' stories.) In any case, let all nerdy trivia questions fade away as you get lost in some magnificent, sleazy funk by maestro Cipriani. And we'll 'see you in Hell, kitten.' " --Mike Malloy, excerpts from the liner notes. Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

Cubiculo Records got in touch with Osbert Maddo (aka The Bionic Singer) in 2015 to voice a "Smuggel Riddim" by Casio Love. Maddo instantly fell in love with it and agreed to work with Cubiculo and Casio Love to make his comeback tune. After sending vocals, Maddo was asking for the final mix every day as he was feeling the tune a lot and he wanted to start pushing it on the US. Osbert passed away the day before Cubiculo sent him the final mix. This is a tribute to the great singer and also his ever last recording.

MILKSHAKES, THE Talking 'Bout... Milkshakes! LP
Damaged Goods present an LP reissue of the classic beat album by The Milkshakes, Talking 'Bout... Milkshakes!, originally released in 1981. The Milkshakes were mainly Mickey Hampshire (guitar/Vox), Billy Childish (guitar/Vox), Bruce Brand (drums) and Russ Wilkins (bass). When punk group The Pop Rivets broke up in 1980, Billy Childish joined forces with Mickey Hampshire, who was a Pop Rivets roadie. The two began writing songs together and the group released their first LP, Talking 'Bout... Milkshakes! in 1981. With Childish and Hampshire sharing guitar and vocal duties, Bruce Brand on drums, and Bertie on bass (later replaced by Russ Wilkins then John Agnew), the Milkshakes's sound was a primitive blend of British beat groups, like the early Kinks at their toughest, and hard-rocking American guitar instrumentalists, like Link Wray. This sound came to be known as the "Medway Sound" and the core members have been playing a variation on it throughout their whole careers.

EVOL Right Frankfurt 12"
The incessant brain bogglers Evol present the nerve-gnawing acid pointillism of Right Frankfurt. Equivalent to an intravenous dose of acidic synthesis, Right Frankfurt nods to one of techno's most efficient power centers with a PCP-on-Modafinil-strength reduction and concentration of early industrial techno tropes with their skull-cracking beats. If you appreciate the lissome fluidity of a strong acid or synth lead, you will relish the piece's tumultuous, microtonal variations, see-sawing up/down and around the frequency scale in highly visual knots that are perhaps best experienced in synch with the strobes of their live show.

Double LP version. After the major and still ongoing success of his previous albums Fatty Folders (DIAL 023CD/LP, 2011) and Happiness is Happening (DIAL 031CD/LP, 2014), Roman Flügel is back with his third full-length album on Dial Records. All The Right Noises includes adventures into contemporary house/techno music, his finest ambient works, and unique broken pieces. An intense mixture of incredible warmth, weird fluffiness and highest uplift, written in his very own musical language - barely another artist, active since the early nineties, sounds as fresh and surprising as Roman Flügel. From the very first chord of "Fantasy", a dream becomes reality, followed by the wonderfully seducing "The Mighty Suns", a masterpiece of its own. Here the journey starts getting slightly provoking with the techy "Dead Idols". "Nameless Lake" and "Planet Zorg" are excessive hymns to start a rave night out. With "Warm And Dewy", "Dust" and "All The Right Noises", Roman Flügel proves his love for eternal madness. The closing tune "Live Tends To Come And Go" is another warm ambient tune in Roman Flügel perfection.

On side A, Grebenstein harnesses the starkly detached vocals of Seefried in a slow demonstration of detached cold wave, with a narrative arc that encompasses intimate confession and paranoid internal impulses. The more texturally rich and aesthetically subdued side B features Joscha Bauer and starts with the swelling drone discord of "Grauer03". "Grauer04" sounds like Cut Hands slowed down by 1000%, inverting the aesthetic to a far more impending sort of stygian doom. RIYL: HTRK, Raime, Fever Ray.

SAWYER, ANGELA Croaks LP
"One of the highlights of early Devo live shows was a song Booji Boy sang called, 'The Words Get Stuck in My Throat.' It was kind of a sappy tune, about little hidden microphones and View-Masters and shit, but it made a huge impression on Angela Sawyer when, still in swaddling clothes, she heard it on a bootleg tape recorded it at Max's Kansas City. She would sit in front of the family Walkman all day and play that song over and over again. It became, what she calls, 'the theme song of my youth.' In the years between that epiphany and this LP, Ms. Sawyer has worn many bonnets. She has been in 'bands' like Preggy Peggy & The Lazy Babymakers, Duck That, Exusamwa, and Negative One. She has run a bizarro-world CDR label (Being Weird Isn't Enough). She has championed crazy music for many zines, sites like Perfect Sound Forever, and as a writer of liner notes. She ran the legendary Weirdo Record Store out of a Harvard Square bomb site. And throughout this she has maintained a bad attitude and propensity for ear-damage that always makes her the first person strange foreigners think of when they want someone to play with. She has made her presence felt as a supremely subterranean force on the New England landscape. Anyway, back to the LP at hand. As a result of Angela wondering about what might happen if words actually got stuck in your throat, she began doing sound poetry vocal exercises designed to answer this age old question. Endless hours of such stuff were recorded and studied, with the final determination being that words can't really get stuck. They always come out eventually. And when they do, they're either croaks or they're honks. In order to show the difference between these two schools of sound, Sawyer assembled this album from hundreds of hours of recordings. And we think you'll agree the results are both startling and revelatory. Science, dear friends, marches on." --Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 300. For fans of Weirdo Records, Negative One, Duck That.

TIME ATTENDANT & HOWLROUND The Blow Volume 2 Cassette
Front And Follow present the second volume in The Blow project. The Blow project brings two artists together to formulate a collaborative release of their own making. Each artist has a side of audio (approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length) to do whatever they want. The two artists are encouraged to work together on the release, but the length and depth of this collaboration is completely up to them and agreed on a release-by-release basis. Artwork for the series is by letterpress artist David Armes of Red Plate Press. Time Attendant, aka Paul Snowdon, is an experimental musician and artist based in London with releases on Exotik Pylon, More Than Human Records, A Year In The Country and Atrocious Symphonies. His Tournaments EP was described as "medieval acid" and his Bloodhounds album as "folk poetry". In an age where one can create all manner of electronic music with a simple swipe of a mouse, Howlround, the duo of Chris Weaver and Robin The Fog, prove not only how much fun is to be had in making things complicated again, but conversely just how little effort is sometimes needed to create a genuinely uncanny and beguiling sound-world, with four albums to date earning them comparisons to the work of William Basinski, Philip Jeck and even the sculptures of Rachel Whiteread.

EASTMAN, JULIUS Femenine CD
Repressed. This recording is the première release of Julius Eastman's Femenine, for chamber ensemble. It is Femenine's only known recording, documenting a 1974 performance by the S.E.M. Ensemble (with the composer on piano) that has lain unheard for decades. The music of Julius Eastman (1940-1990) is enjoying an ongoing period of rediscovery. Known best in the past for his work with figures like Peter Maxwell Davies, Arthur Russell, and Meredith Monk, today his own formidable compositions continue to draw increasing admiration. Joyous, insistent, and immersive, Femenine bathes the listener in surges of tonal color from intertwining winds, piano, violin, pitched percussion, synthesizer, and -- uniquely -- the composer's own invention of mechanized sleigh bells, which provide the 72-minute piece with its characteristic pulse. Illuminating sleeve notes are provided by composer and author Mary Jane Leach, who is co-editor of Gay Guerrilla, a 2015 collection of essays on Eastman's life and music. Recorded by Steve Cellum -- co-producer of Arthur Russell's World of Echo -- and mastered by Denis Blackham. CD in slim card package with insert. "Eastman's stated aim with Femenine was to please listeners, saying of the piece that 'the end sounds like the angels opening up heaven . . . should we say euphoria?' " --Mary Jane Leach

MONTGOMERY, ROY R: Tropic Of Anodyne LP
"It's been over a decade since Roy Montgomery's last album, and R M H Q is a hell of a return. R: Tropic of Anodyne highlights Montgomery's baritone lamentations on every track. It sets the blueprint for all of R M H Q while displaying Montgomery's talent for brevity. His self-reflective lyrics remain personal, even answering the Rolling Stones's classic 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' with the sobering 'You Always Get What You Deserve.' Montgomery was in his rock band period in the eighties, when the dark, minimalist post-punk of The Pin Group lead into the gloriously open-ended freedoms of Dadamah. After a quiet spell, he returned in the late nineties, producing towering spires of guitar lines that exposed fragility between the strums. With his solo releases and in collaboration with Flying Saucer Attack, Bardo Pond (Hash Jar Tempo), and Chris Heaphy (Dissolve), his focus shifted from the truth-mining of rock music to epic celestialism. His ambitious yet humble tracks outstrip their origins, and Montgomery toured the world sitting cross-legged on the floor, playing twenty-plus-minute compositions. A long period of silence followed, marked only with a split album with Grouper (who lists Montgomery as a primary influence), involvement in Torlesse Super Group, and a couple thematic variations serving as soundtracks for films. Instead, he focused on his personal and professional commitments. Unfortunately, two horrific events preceded his return: the Christchurch earthquakes of 2011 condemned Montgomery's entire neighborhood save for his home, stripping his street of a community; and, as a volunteer firefighter, he saw first-hand the destruction and loss of life in the city center. Additionally, since 2014, illness in the family has dominated his life. Self-expression once again demanded an outlet. R M H Q is four albums conceived and recorded over a very short period, each of them carrying a distinct focus and mood."

FATSO JETSON Idle Hands (Blue Vinyl) LP
LP version. Blue vinyl. Californian desert rock progenitors Fatso Jetson present their first proper full-length since 2010, Idle Hands. Their last release, 2010's Archaic Volumes, answered the go-anywhere-at-any-time intensity of earlier records like 1995's Stinky Little Gods and 1997's Power Of Three with a refined sense of groove, always bringing in a sense of experimentalism to their foundation of heavy, punk-infused rock. Since that album came out, Fatso Jetson have hardly been idle. They've toured Europe multiple times over, including with Yawning Man, in which Fatso honcho Mario Lalli also plays, and released splits with Yawning Man, and one with Farflung that marked their first collaboration with Heavy Psych Sounds. Mario Lalli says this about the new album: "This record represents one of the toughest years in my life. To be honest, I barely got it done. It's a very important record because I'm in a way coming out of a long troubled period in my life, and with lots of love and help from my friends and family I got to a place where I could get back to music and express some of this stuff. The band spent three days at Rancho de la Luna with Mathias Schneeberger recording and co-producing and writing on some pretty rough ideas. Dino, my son, wrote a lot of the heavier, more angular, intense music, and I was coming from a more melodic, dark vibe... seemed to all come together. Larry and Tony both wrote music on the album and one of my life-saving buddies, Sean Wheeler, collaborated on two songs I'm very proud of. Also was awesome having my daughter, Olive Lalli, singing on half the tracks. The title of the album is straightforward and the record, the contrary action, to faith without works is dead. We are stoked to do the record with Gabriele [Fiori] from Heavy Psych Sounds. He's been so supportive of us for years now, a good friend. That's how this should be."

VA The New Generation Of Turkish Psychedelic Vol. I LP
If there is one place on earth that has somewhat cradled, hosted or influenced almost each and everything that later formed what we call today as global culture, it is Anatolia. If there is one community that has been (and is still being) shaped with almost every kind of cultural, economic, social, and emotional contrast in the world, it is Turkish people. And if there is one musical genre that can freely embody and disembody each and every thought and feeling that has ever come to man, it is psychedelic music. Turkey has an extremely colorful musical background that is influenced by many different cultures. Below its dull surface covered with commercial productions, the freer depths of Turkey's musical ocean is still vibrant and exuberant with countless young groups pushing the limits of sound and rhythm. Anatolian rock was one of the most authentic and distinctive contributors of the first global psychedelic upheaval in late '60s and early '70s - and it still echoes in the works of Turkish modern rock bands. Indeed, modern Turkish psychedelia is something that is fully connected to the roots of a natively global sense of expression, which can be easily discriminated from other national products such as American garage bands, German krautrock and British psychedelia. The uniqueness of Turkish psychedelia is hidden in the historical and geographical exposure of its musical psyche. Comprised of previously unpublished psychedelic songs by modern Turkish bands, The New Generation Of Turkish Psychedelic Volume I is the first compilation album released by Ironhand Records. The album opens with the aggressive rhythm and raw melodic bass lines of "Profesyonel" by Yarimada, which is the only song with lyrics on the album. The second title, "Lala's Song" by Irtifakaybediyoruz! is a rage of melancholy amidst wisdom and despair. The third title, "Floodgate" by Help! The Captain Threw Up is a moody yet fluent piece that carries influences of psychedelia and post-rock. "Azim", the punchy, clear-cut last title on A side, is performed by Balina from Izmir, a hearty band in love with dark riffs and sorrowful psychedelic sounds. "Ran" by Milankundura, takes the listener to a thought-provoking trip over a cloud of jazzy sounds. And the closing piece, Lopenstraat's 15-minute epic "Hike", is a nerve-shredding adventure in a dusky forest of acoustic and electric sounds.

BOWERY ELECTRIC Beat 2LP
"The second album from New York City's Bowery Electric was released in late 1996, less than 15 months after their self-titled debut, but it found them having traveled light years musically in the interim, the group having seemingly decided to see how far they could take the guitar/bass/drums/vocal setup into the atmosphere. Every aspect of their approach had been refined and focused: squalling, distorted guitars had been transformed into hazy, sensual sheets; the live drums transmuted to sampled rhythms more in debt to the blossoming down-tempo sound of the day; bass lines reduced to their most basic diagrams; vocals submerged to become one with the narcotized fog of the instruments; even the lyrics were reduced to a few minimal lines used sparingly so as not to overshadow the dynamic. Beat is a lush and dense mantra of shadowy percussion, barely-there vocals and immersive drones that envelops the listener in an opiated blanket of sound. The second in a trio of albums released by the core duo of Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener, Beat is without doubt their definitive artistic statement. Coming 20 years to the day of its original release, this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl in almost two decades, and the first ever U.S. vinyl release."

Three years in the making, The Microcosm: Visionary Music Of Continental Europe, 1970-1986 is the first major overview of key works from cosmically-taped in artists needing little introduction -- Vangelis, Ash Ra Tempel, and Popol Vuh -- and unknown masterpieces by criminally overlooked heroes like Bernard Xolotl, Robert Julian Horky and Enno Velthuys. Whereas I Am The Center called for a reconsideration of an entire maligned genre, The Microcosm requests nothing more than an open mind to consider this ambient, new age, neuzeit, prog, krautrock, cosmic, holistic stuff, whatever one calls it -- as a pulsating movement unto itself, a mirror refracting the American new age scene in unexpected, electrifying ways, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt the universality of the timeless quest to express 'the Ineffable' through music. Drawing from major label budgets and homemade cassette distributed circumstances alike, The Microcosm demonstrates a depth of peace profound to behold, and clearly expands the boundaries. Lovingly conceived and lavishly presented by producer Douglas Mcgowan (Yoga Records) and liner notes contributor Jason Patrick Woodbury (Pitchfork, Aquarium Drunkard), The Microcosm features stunning cover paintings by Étienne Trouvelot, and labels by Finnish savant Aleksanda Ionowa. In depth liner notes by Douglas Mcgowan and Jason Patrick Woodbury. Extraordinary cover art by astronomer/entomologist Étienne Trouvelot. Remastered audio, including a previously unreleased track and several others previously cassette only."

SHAGGS, THE Philosophy Of The World LP
Limited repress; LP version. "In 1968, three sisters from Fremont, New Hampshire strapped on their instruments and declared themselves The Shaggs. At that moment begun a peculiar tale that would last far beyond the group's five-year run. Dot, Betty and Helen (and occasionally Rachel, the fourth sister) played in the group on the insistence of their father, Austin Wiggin Jr., who was convinced they were going to be big. Years earlier, Austin's mother gave him a palm reading, predicting that her son would marry a strawberry blonde woman, that he would have two sons after his mother died, and that his daughters would form a popular music outfit. The first two became reality, so Austin was certain the third would follow suit. With pure confidence and his mother's bold prediction, Austin decided that his daughters would forgo attending the local high school in favor of home schooling interspersed with a strict regiment of instrumental and vocal practice, along with jumping jacks and sit-ups. Soon after The Shaggs would enter Fleetwood Recording studios in Revere, Massachusetts to record their sole album, Philosophy Of The World, a collection of garage rock tunes that balanced charm and discordance in equal measure. Austin would spend most of his savings not only on the session but also on the manufacturing costs to press up 1,000 copies of the album (900 of which mysteriously vanished upon completion). Throughout Philosophy Of The World simple truths are revealed through the pen of sister Dot, the songwriter of the band. The rich people want what the poor people got, just as the poor people want what the rich people got. Your parents love you. There is happiness in nearness and sadness in the farness. The album failed to fulfill Austin's expectations of rock stardom, though the group remained together until their father's death, performing frequently at the Fremont town hall and a local nursing home, no further albums were released. That might have been the end of it, until rock band NRBQ discovered a copy at a Massachusetts radio station and re-released it in 1980. Rolling Stone's reviewer at the time described it as 'the most stunningly awful wonderful record I've heard in ages'. Nearly 50 years later, the album ranks among the most polarizing LPs of all time. Some said it was the worst thing ever made. Others felt it was one of the great long players of the 20th century. Frank Zappa famously dubbed the band 'better than The Beatles', while Kurt Cobain placed the album at #5 on his list of Top 50 favorite albums. Original copies of the album fetch for $10,000. Decades later and one could argue that maybe Austin was right all along. We're all here, still enthralled by the purity of The Shaggs. Liner notes by legendary musician, writer and compiler, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith, Nuggets). Book features unseen photos and ephemera. Artwork restored and expanded to a gatefold jacket. Newly remastered."

AMOR & JOHN CONVERTINO, NAIM The Western Suite And Siesta Songs CD
"The Western Suite and Siesta Songs, the first release by newly formed duo Naïm Amor & John Convertino, is the perfect soundtrack to a drive through the desert Southwest. The thin, straight line of the road, unending to the horizon; dark, distant rainclouds hovering far ahead and above; the feel of the heat on the asphalt; and most of all the space... Space and time have come together here to create an environment unequaled elsewhere in elegance and beauty. This duo have created a classic record matching those desert roads and views of Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas. John Convertino recorded the initial tracks in a big room, alone, direct to four track, managing with very simple equipment to capture piano, accordion, and incredible analog drum sounds. Those master cassette tapes were mailed to Amor, who added arrangements and his signature guitar style. Each musician needed each other to finish these works -- Amor's brittle electric guitar stabs, lyrical acoustic guitar playing, and cirrus cloud lap steel combine with the hovering space echoes and rattlesnake hiss / thunderous boom of Convertino's drums to create an epic sequence of themes and variations. These compositions conjure up not only vivid scenes and vistas, but also characters, and moments in lives. The Western Suite And Siesta Songs is a masterpiece of Southwestern music, an album that could be the soundtrack to the best Western film since Once Upon a Time in the West."

Other tracks feature Vladimir Martynov. From the original liner notes: "The record is made on the basis of a kaleidoscope: it is interspersed with pieces of various styles, genres and eras. For example, with these pieces, the authors wanted to show a variety of ways to use a synthesizer, starting with the direct simulation of now or once existing instruments, to the establishment of new not yet known sound systems. Modern Silence present a reissue of Musical Offering, originally released in 1990. Features works by Oleg Buloshkin, Sofia Gubaidulina, Edward Artemiev, Edison Denisov and Alfred Schnittke. From the original liner notes: "(...) Please, try to imagine a score sounding by itself without a conductor, an orchestra even without musical instruments. This magic is possible by using the musical synthesizer, ANS. ANS is an instrument with which a composer can not only create but even draw his music without notes and orchestra. A Soviet scientist Evgeny Murzin spent about 20 years creating this apparatus which can join together three processes: music creation, recording and performing. All these processes are rather complicated. You can see the twinkling of different lamps, the rotation of grooved discs made of glass - notes are cut on a glass disc covered with a special layer; The drawings on the glass are 'sounding notes'. To listen to the drawn picture you should press the button and a wonderful transformation will begin. Murzin dedicated his apparatus to Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, that's why he called it ANS. Scriabin, the creator of the 'Poem of Ecstasy', used in his works a highly chromatic, new type of harmonic style designed to express his beliefs, views and wishes. Soviet music lovers already know some recordings made on ANS from the films Into Space, Solaris (1972), Mirror (1975), Siberiade (1979) and others. Works of well-known Soviet composers E. Artemiev, O. Buloshkin, E. Denisov, S. Gubaidulina, A. Schnittke featured on this LP were recorded at the Electronic Music Studio (...)"

EASTMAN, JULIUS Unjust Malaise 3CD
Restocked. "This three-disc set marks the first appearance on disc of the music of the African-American composer Julius Eastman (1940-1990), who died fourteen years ago under unexplained circumstances and whose musical legacy was thought lost. This comprehensive and definitive document, which comprises almost all of Eastman's signature works, will undoubtedly be a revelation for those who have thus far been unable to hear his work. In his book American Music in the Twentieth Century, composer/author Kyle Gann briefly sums up Eastman's work and its importance: 'Born in New York, he graduated from the Curtis Institute in composition and was discovered by Lukas Foss, who conducted his music, including Stay On It (1973), one of the first works to introduce pop tonal progressions and free improvisation in an art context... Applying minimalism's additive process to the building of sections, he developed a composing technique he called 'organic music,' a cumulatively overlapping process in which each section of a work contains, simultaneously, all the sections which preceded it. The pieces he wrote in this style often had intentionally provocative titles intended to reinterpret the minorities Eastman belonged to in a positive light: for example, Evil Nigger, Crazy Nigger, and Gay Guerrilla (all circa 1980). These three pieces, all scored for multiple pianos, build up immense emotive power through the incessant repetition of rhythmic figures.' Eastman was an energizing underground figure, one whose forms are clear, whose methods were powerful and persuasive, and whose thinking was supremely musical. His works show different routes minimalism might have taken, and perhaps some of those will now be followed up. This set of discs is a bold beginning to restoring to history the works of one of the most important members of the first post-minimalist generation."

JOHNSTON, BEN String Quartets Nos. 6, 7, & 8 CD
"A fourteen-year odyssey comes to a close with the eagerly-anticipated release of the final volume of Ben Johnston's string quartets. The ten string quartets of Ben Johnston, written between 1951 and 1995, constitute no less than an attempt to revolutionize the medium. Only the first limits itself to conventional tuning. The others, climaxing in the astonishing Seventh Quartet of 1984, add in further microtones from the harmonic series to the point that the music seems to float in a free pitch space, unmoored from the grid of the common twelve-pitch scale. In a way, this is a return to an older conception of string quartet practice, since players used to (and often still do) intuitively adjust their tuning for maximum sonority while listening to each other's intonation. The completion of the cycle, supervised throughout by the composer himself, is a historic achievement that will undoubtedly stand as the definitive document of these works, among the landmark quartet cycles of 20th-century music. The Seventh and Eighth Quartets are receiving their world-premiere recordings. The former has a reputation as the most difficult quartet ever written and the Kepler Quartet has met the challenge with enviable aplomb, as they have throughout the cycle, affording listeners a chance to finally hear these difficult but highly rewarding works. Johnston's brief, poignant Rumi setting, Quietness, with the composer himself as vocalist, rounds out the recording, a fitting denouement to -- in the words of composer/author Kyle Gann -- 'possibly the most ambitious string quartet project in history.'"

CHILDS, BARNEY Heaven To Clear When Day Did Close CD
"Barney Childs (1926-2000) is perhaps best known for his innovative scores that weave indeterminacy and improvisation with traditional musical structures and notations. Eclectic in nature, Childs's compositions freely explored diverse avenues of musical thought and drew inspiration from many sources, including traditional western concert music (especially that of such composers as Hindemith, Ives, Ruggles, and Copland), the open form works of John Cage, and jazz of all periods and styles. Childs's compositions usually have wonderfully idiosyncratic aspects to them, rather than following the dictates of either a system or an established style. He said that 'to make music I make choices, as we all do, but I'm unable to presume that music must prove a doctrine, and I cannot accept music merely as process made audible. I choose what will happen simply because it seems to be the right thing to have happen, and in no other way.' Thus, the pieces cannot be easily analyzed, and in fact, he dismisses the idea that the value of a work can be or should be determined by whether or not the resulting work is capable of a brilliant analysis. His pieces consciously play with the listener's expectations, constantly balancing the familiar with the unexpected, so that the listener is 'anticipating what is about to happen: the future is defined and qualified, as far as we can define it, by expectation and anticipation, and this is continually being fulfilled or surprised.' This is exactly what makes a Childs piece work: the interplay between what is expected and what is not. This recording is a tribute to Childs by some of his close friends, performed and produced as a labor of love."

CARL, ROBERT The Geography Of Loss CD
"Imagine, if you will, a busy, furiously humming beehive, and, within it, a calm, meditative bee. The image comes from only one work on this disc, and yet it seems curiously apropos to so much of Robert Carl's (b. 1954) music. There is a still center in his music, even at its modernist rowdiest. In his music dissonance and rhythmic complexity do not connote anxiety, fear, violence, but rather the overflow of the exuberant noise that springs up from the ground of life. His music embraces extremes of simplicity and complexity, which in his vision interpenetrate each other. Symphony No. 4 (2008), one of his best and most ambitious works, is a score often dense with polyrhythms and dissonant counterpoint. Its subtitle is The Ladder, and the ladder in this case is the harmonic series, the series of overtones that arises naturally as you move your finger along a piano or guitar string while playing it. Two pieces on this disc were born from the sense of loss following the deaths of both of Carl's parents, in quick succession. The less obvious one is the Chamber Concerto for Guitar, subtitled The Calm Bee in the Busy Hive (2009?10). The ten-member ensemble includes a second guitar, and both guitars are tuned to a scordatura that facilitates a harmonic series on E: E-G#-D-F#-Bb-F. The other is The Geography of Loss (2010), whose form is an alternation of choral and instrumental movements with the chorus and instruments together in two movements and a baritone solo and soprano solo, respectively, in each of those movements. Written considerably earlier than the other works on this disc, The World Turned Upside Down (2000) is somewhat in a different idiom, but Carl considers it a turning point in his output, and its coda the initiation of the harmonic-series practice. Overall, this group of pieces leads us through an enormous diversity of idioms, and Carl has never been one to cultivate a single well-defined style and stick to it. Yet if one listens with an ear for his procedure of shifting from one harmonic series to another, the underlying unity is perceptible, and the disc as a whole gives us a striking picture of one of the most remarkable of early 21st-century composers."

ROVA::ORKESTROVA No Favorites! (for Lawrence "Butch" Morris) CD
"No Favorites pays homage to one of the most original creators in improvised music, Lawrence 'Butch' Morris (1947-2013), inventor of Conduction, a method for organizing large-ensemble improvisation that he took to the world. The program represents a working relationship that Rova began with Morris in 1988 and also reflects parallel working processes reaching back to the mid-1970s. Rova do more than simply pay tribute. The quartet's members build on their own work in structured improvisation, incorporate other methods of organization -- from graphic scores to conventional notation -- and expand their palette from the saxophone quartet to include a string quartet and an electric power trio. Extending the possibilities of large-ensemble improvisation, the combined groups create music of both depth and an ever changing surface, the fruit of both intense commitment and a highly creative, heterodox methodology. Like previous Rova expansions, it achieves complex music that both requires and rewards active listening. Each of the three extended pieces here includes a high degree of improvisation while embodying different compositional principles, the first and third (Nothing Stopped / But a Future and Contours of the Glass Head) employing conduction, the second graphic notation and simultaneity."

GIBSON, JON Relative Calm CD
"Jon Gibson (b. 1940) is one of the less frequently mentioned pioneering composers of minimal music and is probably best known as a founding member of the Philip Glass Ensemble. Gibson also holds the unique distinction of having performed with Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and La Monte Young (as a member of the Theatre of Eternal Music), in addition to Glass, the four composers widely regarded as the founding fathers of minimal music. Gibson also has a track record of composing for modern and post-modern dance and Relative Calm (1981) is the fruit of one of his numerous collaborations with well-known choreographers, in this case Lucinda Childs, who commissioned the work. The rediscovery of Relative Calm, one of Gibson's major works, is cause for rejoicing among aficionados of minimalist music."

JOHNNY! Only Love 7"
"Introducing: Johnny! - Ghanaian Afro-rock from German producer/composer JJ Whitefield and an international cast of top shelf musicians. Whitefield, who in the early '90s revived the gritty, analog funk sounds of the '60s and '70s with his Poets Of Rhythm, has been working with Now-Again Records for almost a decade, releasing a flock of acclaimed projects with Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Whitefield Brothers, Rodinia and the Original Raw Soul anthology. He first started exploring African rhythms with the Whitefield Brothers in the late '90s, continuing in the '00s with Karl Hector & The Malcouns. He's been instrumental in launching Ghanaian Afro beat/funk legend Ebo Taylor´s international career, decades after the maestro recorded the landmark albums that have inspired thousands. Whitefield recorded two new studio albums with Taylor and toured in his band between 2009 and 2013, where he met Taylor's son Henry and percussionist/singer Eric Owusu. The trio now front the Johnny! band and find inspiration not only in Ghana's hypnotic grooves, but also the full frontal fuzz guitar assault heard on the legion of '70s Zambian Zam-rock albums recently reissued by Now-Again. Indeed, Whitefield credits his tours with Zam-rock godfathers Rikki Ililonga and Witch's Jagari Chanda as instrumental in creating the Johnny!'s sonic backdrop. The band is rounded out by Turkish drummer Bernd Oezsevim (Woima Collective, Rodinia) and Indonesian bassist/multi-instrumentalist Tomi Simatupang (Whitefield Brothers). This is dance rock at the core with the possibilities to stretch out and go into psychedelic realms."

C.A.M.P.O.S. Miracles & Criminals 2LP
What if Brian Wilson, Arthur Lee, Elliott Smith, Ralf Hütter, Eliades Ochoa, Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone went on a vision quest to Peru and brought a 4-track with them? What if they hung out and jammed with Los Wembler's De Iquitos at an itinerant circus in the jungle, bumped into Alejandro Jodorowsky in the midst of filming a lost epic in the Temple of The Sun at Machu Picchu, and were abducted (along with their tapes) by a sexy alien piloting a glowing UFO? Curious? Then come with C.A.M.P.O.S. on an audio journey to find out what that could sound like. C.A.M.P.O.S. is the new project from multi-talented multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Joshua Camp, aka Juan Campos (Chicha Libre, One Ring Zero, Litvakus as well as sideman for Los Crema Paraiso and others). C.A.M.P.O.S. stands for: Cumbias And More Psychedelic Original Sounds; but you have to sit down and listen to these two records in their entirety to grasp its meaning fully. From lo-fi experiments to lush soundscapes, field recordings to dancefloor ditties, stories of love and war, slavery, revelation, redemption, temptation, ruin, rebirth, and through it all, the healing power of music seen through the steamy lens of magic-realism. A mutual friend, pianist Marlysse Simmons (Bio Ritmo, Miramar), encouraged Peace & Rhythm to inquire with Mr. Camp about a cache of unreleased recordings in his archives. Amazingly, these tracks were tunes that had been shelved or left on the cutting room floor from past years. Recordings that either never got finished, came from other incomplete projects, were rejected demos for previous albums, or were slated for an upcoming but never recorded release. Once Joshua realized how excited Peace & Rhythm was by this pool of unreleased music, he tweaked and tinkered with some, fleshed out others that were mostly bare bones, revamped others that he had always wanted to get to but had not really had the validation, right context, or time to complete. A refugee group of orphaned, discarded and under-fed recordings, seen for what they could be: an imaginary travelogue, an accidental concept album of psychedelic tropical Americana. Join him in his magical tropidelic world of Miracles & Criminals. "Sounds like a lost night in the Amazon with a Moog, drum machine and leather jacket. Psychedelic, playful and authentic." --Will "Quantic" Holland.

THORSTEINSSON Academy Of Heroes 2LP
Thorsteinssøn is the Iceland-born-Denmark-bred Gunnar Thor Viggosson, better known as one half of 76 79 with Tommy Vicari Jnr and boss man at Comfortable Records and Vanity - Although now he can be called the man behind the first Pets album of 2016. Deliciously cosmic and cheerily schizophrenic, Academy Of Heroes is inspired by a brilliant creative project Thorsteinssøn practiced during his years living in Amsterdam: Solar Industry Radio - A project that would begin with a made up artist or band name in styles ranging from cosmic funk, Scandinavian disco to noise collages of the galaxies. A joyously backwards project that inspired a rich rainbow of styles, the content was then represented 24/7 online, collaged with strange jingles and sci-fi snippets. Returning to those creations, Thorsteinssøn and Pets have weaved together a full album that cherry picks from his thunderous proliferation: from the strutting west coast deep house of "1976" to the introverted electro boogie of "N:M:T:F:R" by way of the poignant chords of "Untitled Disco Six", the wry acid wriggles of "Channel DISQ" and the Trans Am twinkles of "Beneath A Steel Sky". This collection of 14 tracks act as an immersive, timeless collage. A smorgasbord of synthetic exploration, rich in sci-fi, space and robotic sympathy, pieced together with the same spirit of his cult radio transmissions. It works just as well on the cans as it does in the dance.

James Ginzburg (Bleed Turquoise) of Emptyset, summons the soul and amplifies it with cathartic synth stabs in unison with martial percussive bursts. Africaine 808's Dirk Leyers (Format01) mechanizes the chaos in to a rhythmic spell. Ketev carries the listener off into the great unknown with his amniotic drones and hypnotic inward movements.

SOFT KILL Choke CD
"Portland's Soft Kill began in 2010 by releasing An Open Door, one of the most highly regarded post-punk albums of the last ten years. Founding member Tobias Sinclair (ex-Blessure Grave) joins Conrad Vollmer (Warm Hands) on guitar, drummer Maximillion Avalon (Chromatics, Antioch Arrow, Get Hustle, Atriarch) and Owen Glendower on synths for their fourth album Choke, an eight song suite. This follows on the heels of 2015's Heresy, which was much more claustrophobic and oppressive than their debut. Rooted in influences such as the Chameleons, Wire and The Sound, this latest album pulls delicately from foundational elements of the Cocteau Twins and Spaceman 3. It places the listener deeply under water, gasping for breath and beyond hope with tracks like 'On The Inside,' featuring the vocals of legendary Mark Burgess of the Chameleons. Drawing from the first wave of post punk, the songs slip seamlessly into the cascading and ethereal elements of early shoegaze. Soft Kill has discovered a depth of invention and creativity with their latest, vast and engaging in scope, invoking an enduring and melancholic bliss. Filled with warm, lush guitars, it teems with melodic songs, generating urgency and vitality, elevating all that is potent in post punk. A culmination of years perfecting a unique sound, Choke places itself firmly in the canon."

Agathe Max, who hails originally from Lyon, is a classically-trained violinist with a varied back catalog of studio and live work. From spectral ambience to stately soundscapes. Max is adept at summoning dream states and drama alike. Her emotive and engaging work has found admirers at a number of UK festivals. Gareth Turner maintains a busy schedule performing and recording with Rocket Recordings trio Anthroprophh, bass/drums duo Big Naturals and his solo double-bass project Salope. Despite both of these artists's multi-faceted artistic lives, their partnership was both a natural progression and reflective of their intuitive chemistry. PREHN QUARTET, TOM Axiom LP
It will always be difficult to pinpoint where free jazz started, but it´s reasonable to say it was shaped and cultivated in New York in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor were important players, as was Ornette Coleman. Axiom has significant historical importance by being what is quite possibly the first European free jazz record, even if it was not released at the time. Recorded in Copenhagen in October 1963, it should have been Tom Prehn Quartet's debut album for the Sonet label. But by the time the test pressings arrived - a couple of months later - the music already sounded old to them and Sonet subsequently pulled the plug. This, in itself, is quite remarkable, knowing that they were so far ahead of their time. A few sleeves and labels had been printed but only two complete copies survived, making it one of the rarest jazz albums ever. Axiom is expressive, full frontal free jazz of the highest order, and to think it was created by Danish musicians, most of them barely into their twenties, in 1963, is frankly mind-boggling. On the other hand, Scandinavian audiences, especially in Denmark and Sweden, had already welcomed controversial musicians like Ayler and Taylor with open arms. They also imposed a serious impact on many local jazz musicians, the Swedish sax phenomenon Bengt "Frippe" Nordstrøm even recorded Albert Ayler, in Sweden, with Swedish musicians, for his Bird Notes label as early as in 1962 , three years before his first ESP record. Elsewhere in Europe pioneers like UK´s Spontaneous Music Ensemble would debut on record in 1966, while Germany´s Peter Brötzmann would release his first record the year after. First vinyl release. Previously released as a CD by Corbett vs. Dempsey ?in 2015. Painstaking re-creation of original sleeve by Kim Hiorthøy.

VIDA, BEN Damaged Particulates LP
Ben Vida's Damaged Particulates LP represents the conclusion of one body of work, Damaged Particulates, and the beginnings of a new long form project titled Reducing The Tempo To Zero. The version of Damaged Particulates (2012-2016) included in this LP is the final iteration of a piece that Vida has been developing for close to four years. It first materialized as a number of individual synthesizer studies under the title "Damaged Parts". These studies became the source material for an early version of DPs, taking shape as a commissioned work for the Unsound Festival. For the commission the piece coalesced as a single, through-composed live sound installation that utilized tactile sub bass speakers which interfaced directly with the audiences bodies. In this form, Damaged Particulates was presented at festivals, galleries and museums including versions at Experimental Intermedia, New York, Cricoteka Museum, Kraków, Poland and Leap Gallery, Berlin. It has since been presented in live performance at Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, Bologna and Electrónica en Abril, Madrid and as a multichannel defusion at the Akousma Festival, Montreal. Reducing The Tempo To Zero (2016 - ???) is the first recorded dispatch of Vida's new long form composition. This excerpt demonstrates a short instrumental passage taken from a work that, in its full duration, clocks in at close to five hours. Live performances featuring a four member vocal ensemble have been presented at Lampo, Chicago and at The Kitchen, NYC. This mutable composition will be reconfigured once again in late 2016, this time scored for choir and electronics, to be staged in Italy and Belgium. Reducing The Tempo To Zero represents Vida's return to the durational drone based forms that he first experimented with in the mid-90s with his group Town And Country. In performance, RTTTZ continues his exploration of phonetic based text scores. This method of scoring was used in his project Slipping Control which debuted at Audio Visual Arts Gallery, NYC with an LP version was also released by Shelter Press in 2014 (SHELTER 038LP), and creates a continuous thread between his work as a composer and his developing career as an artist. Vida has expanded his compositional process into a number of mediums, acting to blur any delineation between disciplines and practices. 140 gram vinyl, uncoated sleeve & inner sleeve. Artwork by Katy Fischer. Design by Bartolomé Sanson. Mastered and cut by Helmut Erler at D+M.

CZARFACE A Fistful Of Peril CD
"Czarface (Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck & 7L & Esoteric) are back! Fresh off the heels of their collaboration with Marvel Comics, the trio continues to combine music and art with their latest release A Fistful Of Peril. The back story of this album begins in the summer while Deck and Esoteric were in the studio recording some new Czarface material. During this time Marvel Comics had reached out to Czarface wanting some music to soundtrack their Black Panther web series, promoting their breakout comic of the same name. This Marvel meeting spawned the lead track 'All in Together Now' and served as the primary inspiration for a fleshed-out album that nobody saw coming. The group camped out in the studio playing beats, talking comics, video games, and pop culture....what came about was A Fistful Of Peril. Starting the album off with the ARP keyboard odyssey of 'Electric Level 1' is like entering the vortex of color and light in Kubrick's 2001. The aptly titled 'Two In The Chest' showcases Deck & Eso's ability to deliver punchlines and pop culture references with ease over an exceptional bass and guitar combo. 'Czar Wars' has the two sparring back and forth bringing that 'X-Men/Danger Room' mentality that Deck often to refers to when in Czar-mode. Psycho Les of The Beatnuts steps in on 'Dust' while 'Lizard City' introduces 'Czarface Pajamas'. Yes you read that correctly. The off-kilter 'Steranko' has Meyhem Lauren and Rast join forces with Czarface as they weave their way through a mind-bending array of varying beats. Other features on the album are Conway on 'Machine, Man & Monster' and AOTP's Blacastan on 'Tarantulas'. Another one of the album's highlights is 'Dare Iz A Darkseid' which, along with 'Talk That Talk', is the perfect balance of wit and humor that make up the core of Czarface."

SKUDGE Balancing Point LP
Skudge present Balancing Point. When the duo Skudge started out in late 2009 with their first release on Alphahouse, followed by a string of underground hits on their own label Skudge Records, little did they know that they would be in the forefront of the Stockholm sound of the dawning 2010s. Complex rhythmic textures, combined with an echoing audial lightness, sub intense quick basslines and swirling percussion is considered their trademark. This updated take on the techno and house crossover was soon appreciated and caught the attention of a full spectrum of artists. 2010 alone saw six releases from the Skudge hub; Culminating in 2011 with the release of Phantom (SKUDGE 001CD/LP), the full length album release on the home imprint, followed by the sub labels that releases other artists as well. Five years from that era, Skudge has reshaped into the solo work from one of the original artists. This change of production and artistry launches into the crates with the release of Balancing Point. Skudge's sound has shifted into a new territory. The entire A-side of Balancing Point acts as the beginning of this grooving whirlpool of a record: quick and immense. The UK influences that were formed in the '90s are infused through the B-side, ending off in an almost orchestral piece. The delicate subtleness of Balancing Point showcases a familiar coming-of-light type of style that leave the listener sure of the future. "Polar" features Samo DJ. Edition of 500.

XAM DUO XAM Duo 2LP
Double LP version. XAM Duo is the new outfit formed by Matthew Benn of Hookworms and Christopher Duffin of Deadwall. This self-titled release is six tracks of improvised ambient beauty - both meditative and peaceful, it is astral jazz with an experimental kosmische undercurrent; modular synths meet saxophones; Cluster meets Terry Riley; Laurie Spiegel meets Pharoah Sanders. XAM Duo is a warm, immersive record that rewards repeat listens. XAM was originally Matthew's solo project. He recorded a number of tracks at home between Hookworms albums in 2014 which were released in 2015 as the Tone Systems EP on Deep Distance. Christopher says he approaches each song as a "mini-soundtrack to an imaginary film" and reveals that, while he was practicing at home, he played along to clips of There Will Be Blood (2007), Mulholland Drive (2001) and Synecdoche, New York (2008) to get the requisite atmosphere. "I appreciate that improvised music isn't for everyone, but it's something I love doing," Matthew concludes. "And, more often than not, Chris and I create something beautiful together."

TIGER & WOODS On The Green Again 2x12"
Gatefold 2x12" version. The second studio album for Tiger & Woods not only marks a desired return to a specific format, but is also a huge leap forward in their area of expertise. Their brand of fun and functional dance music gets broadened by influences from electronica, Italo disco and up-tempo house, while keeping a groove that is distinctly linked to what some people refer to as boogie. After travelling the world from left-to-right and from top-to-bottom with a live-set to boot and skillful DJ sets that resemble that genre melting approach, On The Green Again is the result of spending valuable studio time at the "Tiger's Lair" - a carefully-built new work place that plays its own part in the creative process for the prolific production team responsible for starting T&W Records. Honing a craft that is rooted in edit culture as an ethos, but has since long left that bumpy road dependable on samples and their clearance, Tiger & Woods make On The Green Again work as an album that defies the difficulty usually attached to such ventures. Ten brand-new tracks make up the course between peak-time prime cuts similar to "RockMeLoveMe" or "Come And Get My Lovin" and an almost heart-aching track like "Endless Affair". Mixed with bits and pieces in-between and neatly placed between a classic intro and outro segment, these tracks are a testament to that aforementioned wider scope. To put it in a nutshell, On The Green Again is not concerned with leaving a comfort zone, but with making the listener comfortable no matter which zone they are in.

UnicaZürn is Stephen Thrower and David Knight. ?megapavilion consists of three improvisations played, recorded, and edited by UnicaZürn specifically for this release across one weekend in March 2015 in Battersea, London. Instrumentation included ARP Solina String Ensemble, EMS Synthi AKS, electric guitar, and two iPads. Here's Joe Banks, writing about the group for The Quietus: "UnicaZürn is an ongoing collaboration between David Knight and Stephen Thrower, two musicians with some serious avant rock credentials -- Knight was a key member of Shock Headed Peters and songwriting partner to the divine Danielle Dax, while Thrower was with Coil for eight years and is also one half of Cyclobe. The music they make together using a variety of vintage keys and reed instruments is a viscerally organic strain of proto-ambient, strongly influenced by the pre-sequencer Tangerine Dream of Zeit and Atem. We're firmly in drone territory here, but a long way away from throwing a few synth loops into GarageBand and hoping for the best."

FELL, MARK Focal Music #3, #4, #5a, #5b Cassette
Mark Fell on Focal Music: "This series of works on this cassette began in 2011 when I attended a workshop/residency program led by the British sound artist, composer and performer Jan Hendrickse. During a workshop session I played a pattern generating system via headphones to a drummer, Patrik Jarlestam, who played a single snare drum. The basic premise of the work was that the performer should follow the pattern as accurately as possible, and to see what happened at the moments when the pattern changed - i.e. to foreground the performer's attempts to follow the pattern and their ability to cope with the subtle yet unusual changes. The pattern itself consists of a single percussive sound. The timing of the sound is determined by a list of five values ranging from one to 11 that represent timing intervals... Although the patterns are relatively simple, and as a listener one can assimilate their form quite easily, it can be quite difficult to play along to them especially at those moments of change. So the piece can be thought of as a kind of intervention into the musical training and embedded musical vocabularies that the performer brings to the work. The point of the piece is not a perfect recital, but the difficulties that the performer encounters and the musical moments that these difficulties produce. Unfortunately I believe there is no recording of Jarlestam's first performance of this piece - 'Focal Music #1'. The piece was performed a second time by Okkyung Lee during her residency at Cafe Oto, London 2015. 'Focal Music #3' was performed with Laura Cannell at Baltic 39 (Newcastle, 2015) for Broken Telephone, an event which formed part of Peter J. Evans's exhibition Across Islands, Divides. 'Focal Music #4' was performed with Aby Vulliamy at The Leeds Library (Leeds, 2015). 'Focal Music #5a' and 'Focal Music #5b' were recorded with Sandro Mussida at Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (Karlsruhe, 2016) in the Kubus studio. The piece, performed on piano, takes two forms: the first based upon a six note pitch set of which any two notes are played at the same time; the second is formed of five discreet layers each with a single note. These were played in isolation following the same guide pattern and then later overlaid to form a single pseudo chord." Tracks mastered for this release by Phil Julian; Edition of 150.

BITING TONGUES Still On Hawaiian Time Cassette
Biting Tongues were formed in 1978 to improvise a soundtrack to the screening of a 16mm experimental film of the same name at Tony Wilson's original Factory Club in Manchester. A core membership was soon established that was to last until 1984: Howard Walmsley - sax; Ken Hollings - texts; Eddie Sherwood - drums; Colin Seddon - bass; and Graham Massey - guitar and noise. Their performances, an unpredictable "post-punk avant-funk" mix of spoken word, percussion, random tapes, films and free-form soloing, were mostly confined at this time to clubs in Manchester and London. The release of their first three albums Don't Heal (1981), Live It (1981) and Libreville (1984) widened their audience, and Biting Tongues found themselves performing more in theatres, arts venues and galleries. Still On Hawaiian Time captures two Biting Tongues performances from this later period. The Library Theatre in the center of Manchester was a large seated venue with an even larger stage, meaning that the group members could spread out more and incorporate additional percussion, tapes and electronic devices. It also shows Biting Tongues cutting up and rearranging themes from different recordings - the performance also anticipates their work on Feverhouse: their full-length experimental feature film released in 1984 by Factory Records's video offshoot IKON The improved facilities available in a theatre venue, including greater space, better acoustics and more time for a sound check, meant that Biting Tongues could concentrate on the performance, producing some of their most aggressive and demanding work. During the early 1980s, Biting Tongues excelled as a live band, always seeking to challenge both themselves and their audiences. These two recordings are fascinating documents that convey some of the immediacy and commitment of their performances - something that can still be felt in these old tapes some thirty years after they were first recorded. Personnel: "Library Theatre, Manchester 16.6.1983": Colin Seddon - bass guitar, drums, percussion; Eddie Sherwood - drums; Ken Hollings - voice, clarinet, percussion, tapes; Graham Massey - guitar, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, drums, Astroban, iguarglaphon, voice, percussion; Howard Walmsley- tenor and soprano sax, glockenspiel, percussion, voice; Barry Seddon - pick-axe handle. "Riverside Studios, London 5.6.1982": Colin Seddon - bass guitar; Eddie Sherwood - drums; Ken Hollings - vocals, Hohner Pianet, percussion; Graham Massey - guitar, clarinet, reed cornet, trumpet, iguarglaphon, Morello loop, diary, percussion; Howard Walmsley - tenor sax, voice, percussion, Hohner Pianet. INSHA Dysplazia LP
Classically-trained Boston producer Kaan Erbay, under the name Insha, explores the push-and-pull of tension and relief with his debut album Dysplazia, a record that drags familiar sounds into shadowy, wayward new places. Punctuated by barely-audible vocal samples, the album takes cues from artists such as Burial and Arca, stripping rhythms from their usual context and burying them beneath swathes of noise and abstract sound. As a founder of Boston's DRAW collective, Erbay has developed his ear DJing countless parties and settling on a sound that straddles usual divides. On Dysplazia he takes influence from R&B, video game and film music and British dance music and manages to fuse these disparate sounds into a beguiling, melancholy collage. Pounding beats crash and crumble as fizzy neon synths flourish and fade rapidly and voices chatter and scream. Erbay subverts these tropes with the hand of a DJ but exhibits a rare vulnerability. It's this restraint twinned with his compositional skill that makes Dysplazia so crucial - anything but a bundle of dance tracks, it's a widescreen, narrative experience that needs to be absorbed in its entirety. RIYL: Arca, Burial, Actress, Rabits. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 500.

BELL, RENICK Empty Lake EP 12"
The angular, abstract funk of Renick Bell's Empty Lake EP is perhaps exactly what you might expect from a pioneer of algoraves - a forward-looking union of live coding and rave music. With Empty Lake EP, Bell skillfully teases out a tangle of post techno pulses, shards of catty ballroom house, hardcore kuduro and footwork patterns. From the recoiling swang of "Trying To Control The Four Winds" to the Patten-like melt of "The Well" and the fluctuating states of "Surface Waters Flow Together", there's a level of detail here that will baffle your sense of meter and tone.
