JAWBONES High And Low And Low And High LP
LP version. Jawbones present their concept album High And Low And Low And High. "Jawbones was started by Leonard Kaage, in late 2014, as a result of performing with and for many other bands and projects such as: The Blue Angel Lounge, Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe, Tracy Bryant, and many more. Together with four other like-minded musicians, Jawbones have developed a unique personality and sound that hovers somewhere over the psychedelic scene in the late '60s but brought to a modern perspective. Jawbones have so far supported bands like The Underground Youth, The Warlocks, The Shivas, Holy Wave, and more. Their first single 'Rain' was released September 1st, 2016" --Psychedelic Baby Magazine, Sept 2016.

TEJADA & TIN MAN, JOHN Acid Test 12 12"
LA legend John Tejada and acid innovator Tin Man (Johannes Auvinen) follow their 2016 collaboration, the LA-inspired Acid Test 10, with a 12" inspired by Auvinen's hometown (and Tejada's birthplace), Vienna. Acid Test 12's four songs were mixed down live to two tracks without a DAW or multitracking. The tense drum workout of "Railjet" opens the record before Auvinen sculpts his 303 into near-pizzicato form on "Bim," one of the duo's most memorable tracks. "Danube Nights" blends widescreen acid lines, a pensive lead, and melancholy chords as the drums roll along, tough enough for a heaving floor with a hint of fragility for the headphones.

HELM Rawabet Cassette
Rawabet is a live album from Helm documenting a special performance that took place alongside Maurice Louca in front of a sold-out audience at the Rawabet Theater in Cairo on October 22nd, 2015. This document is also a snapshot of a period of pan-continental touring which took Helm from Egypt to Austria and then to Canada in three days. During these shows, material from his recently released Olympic Mess album (PAN 063CD/LP, 2015) was re-imagined, expanded, and performed alongside new and "other" material, to add an alternative perspective to the original recordings. What ended up being performed in Cairo on October 22nd owed a lot to the energy of the city and the superb recording and mixing job by Khyam Allami. Rawabet can be seen as the definitive live document of Helm to date.

GAILES Seventeen Words LP
"While they've released records on their own, and even collaborated in the past (Orcas), Rafael Anton Irisarri and Benoit Pioulard have never made music quite like they do with Gailes. This is a pure winter doldrums soundtrack, when the stillness after a snowstorm ends elongates into deep contemplation. It's not surprising that Seventeen Words was conceived, composed and recorded as the duo weathered a brutal winter squall, the remains of which can be viewed on the album's artwork. This is bottomless music, minimal in sound yet majestic in presentation. Snow slows, time freezes. This is the world of Gailes, just a fragment of our own writ large for eternity."

TINY HAZARD Greyland CD
"Greyland, Tiny Hazard's debut, is a raw, jagged treasure -- a testament to the group's masterful intuition for pop songs in chaos. This jagged, unpredictable, celestial music is filled with terrestrial pain. The Brooklyn-based five piece, who formed when the group met at The New School, is anchored by the vocals of songwriter Alena Spanger. She recorded the vocals in the solitude of her bedroom, carving out a space that allowed her to explore the nuances of her voice. Her songwriting process began with gibberish and stream-of-consciousness style thoughts sung over melodies, eschewing the clumsiness of real words in favor of tone or timbre. Then she focused on the language, a slow process, to 'try and get it just right.' Trained in opera, Spanger prefers 'voices that are not perfect,' and was moved to explore vocal possibilities when she heard Meredith Monk."

PRINCE Lotus Flow3r/MPLSound (2017 Edition) 2LP/2CD
2017 edition. Originally released in 2009. For more than thirty years, Prince indefatigably attacked the bulwarks which separate funk, rock, pop and hip-hop. This is a deluxe gatefold release composed of two slabs of vinyl (Lotusflow3r and MPLSound, also included on CDs). "On LotusFlow3r Prince has a specific mission: showcasing his long-underrated guitar playing. Whether it's the spare funk of 'Wall of Berlin,' the metal grind of 'Dreamer' or the hazy cover of 'Crimson and Clover,' the music kicks into high gear when Prince starts soloing, delivering one epic face melter after another in a style halfway between David Gilmour's and Eddie Hazel's." --Gavin Edwards (Rolling Stone, 2009)

GUTHRIE, WILL People Pleaser LP
Nantes, France-based drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie presents People Pleaser. Initially rising to prominence in Australia as a drummer in the fields of jazz and improvised music, Guthrie later turned increasingly toward electronics and amplified percussion, developing an idiosyncratic style of electroacoustic performance characterized by shimmering metallic textures, rapid-fire textural transformations, and aggressively high volume. Guthrie has since returned to the drum kit in both solo and collaborative work, pushing at the limits of his formidable technical abilities as a player in the free jazz tradition and working variations on short rhythmic units into an endless flow of non-metered pulse. Although drawing on many aspects of Guthrie's past work, People Pleaser stands alone in his catalog. Working intuitively over a period of three weeks, Guthrie crafted a suite of song-length pieces that combine his drumming with electronics, field recordings, and sampled detritus. Inspired by the rough-and-ready sampling style of producers like the RZA, J Dilla, and Knxwledge, and by the endless possibilities of musique concrète, People Pleaser uses a highly divergent array of sound sources, building pieces from drum and percussion tracks left over from other projects, audio ripped from skate videos, noise electronics, fragments of a police interrogation, and anything else ready to hand. Guthrie's unique rhythmic sensibility is the thread drawing all these elements together, his drum performances propulsively rhythmic yet insistently irregular in a way that sometimes brings to mind the uniquely open rhythmic space carved out by early Weather Report and other classic fusion. Drawing together manifold influences in an entirely sui generis way, People Pleaser is a raw, exciting, and surprisingly accessible peek into the laboratory of a unique sensibility. Designed by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, August 2016.

JOST, CARSTEN Perishable Tactics 2LP
Double LP version. In the midst of a busy year, full of wildly-varied accomplishments, David Lieske (aka Carsten Jost) presents Perishable Tactics, his first full-length album since 2001's You Don't Need A Weatherman To Know Which Way The Wind Blows. Since his last full-length, he's kept busy curating countless releases on Dial, the label he co-runs with Peter "Lawrence" Kersten, which celebrated a 15 year anniversary with an all-encompassing various artists compilation, he has released a gallery-edition album of his black ambient collaboration Misanthrope CA with Robert Kulisek, Deathbridge (DIAL 037LP, 2016), and he launched a new magazine project (also with Kulisek) named after the speed of light (i.e. 299792458m/s). Out of all of the Dial house and techno artists, Carsten Jost has always represented the most precise brand of exquisitely doom-laden house, laced with equally strong doses of melancholy and beauty. On Perishable Tactics, Lieske runs through his distinctively stealthy, low-slung beat-"mospheres", leaning towards a decidedly low-lit and sultry space, but mixed with a fresh, gently arcing feeling of romance and possibly love. Tellingly, he's seen it fit to include 2007's "Love", originally from a 2007 split release with Efdemin. But while "Love" represents a yearning towards a place where love might reside, the remaining tracks seem to represent a place where love actually exists. This feeling is woven into his deep, medium tempo, Detroit-inflected house rhythms, accented with crystalline keys, disembodied voices at times, and gently soaring strings. While anger may be less in the forefront here it is important to notice that these tracks are ripe with the balance of joy and unease inherent in house. There is definitely a newfound languid nature here that feels particularly like a moment shared by two (perhaps many), but the atmosphere still remains decidedly pensive. "Ambush", with its strolling beat, moody, yet sweet chords and chilling atmosphere, which is eventually joined by thunder cracking a safe-distance away. Of course diehard fans will find satisfaction knowing that Lieske's delectable angst hasn't completely abated. The title track takes a disarmingly peaceful setting and rolls a heavy fog over it to herald a sure-to-arrive fate that awaits the listener. But with "Dawn Patrol", the whispering hi-hat and gently clanking rhythm, offset by rolling strings, marries the old and new Carsten Jost most successfully. Dense atmospheres, bookended by tracks by Misanthrope CA, make for a perfectly foreboding, elegant, and deliciously dark album by Carsten Jost.

PARKER & DIZZY GILLESPIE, CHARLIE Bird And Diz LP
Originally released in 1952; reissued on 140-gram clear vinyl. The final collaborative studio recording by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Producer Norman Granz's original liner notes: "Modern jazz has had from the start two main sources whence came most of the ideas. These two founts, as it were, of inspiration and of ideas are Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Indisputably they have enriched the lore of jazz throughout the world. They have taken what people have built before them, refashioned it in many ways, added to it, and have sent the jazz edifice soaring for others to look up to; be inspired by, and, eventually, build upon. Most of the playing of Parker and Gillespie together was in the period 1944-46. At that time Gillespie had a small unit in which Parker was the featured soloist. Shortly after that period, they separated, each to go his own way. This album represents the first get-together, in a sense, of the two since their separation. I took, as an ideal rhythm section, Thelonious Monk, who is a lesser light in modern jazz but, nevertheless, an important one; Curly Russell, an itinerant bassist, in the modern idiom; and Buddy Rich, a very swinging drummer. We made the sides contained in this album at a very happy date; and I think you will agree that Parker and Gillespie are fresher and better than ever before, and axiomatically as they play, so does modern jazz grow."

A widely reported legend of Johnson selling his soul to the Devil in order to gain prowess on the guitar seems likely given the talent the man possessed. SCIENTIST The Untouchable LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Hopeton Overton Brown, aka Scientist, is a true legend. He took dub reggae to a completely different level. Trained and mentored by the late, great, lamented King Tubby, he blew the scene into smithereens with his knowledge, skill and complete understanding of the mixing desk. His new album, The Untouchable, is a really great collaboration with some of the best artists of the international reggae scene: Tippa Irie, Rod Taylor, Sabrina Pallini, Da Real Storm, Dubiterian, Ilhame Paris, Jacin, Kelli Love. Scientist's The Untouchable is a concept of reintroducing rhythms produced by Bunny Lee from the '70s and some rhythms produce by The Scientist from the '80s, by introducing some new school artists alongside the old school to preserve the power of dub reggae music. No matter where you are, this music has the power to cross borders, to soothe your heart and soul and make you feel alive.

VA Oz Waves LP
Efficient Space continue to expose Australia's esoteric musical history with Oz Waves - a collection of '80s DIY recordings, compiled by odd wave anthropologist Steele Bonus. Definitive proof that inhabitants of the Down Underground were links in a global network of creative kooks, Oz Waves connects those who utilized mobile recording rigs and small press releases to create and disseminate misfit synth-punk, tape loop experiments, and inner city pop. Through overseas mail order exchanges, anonymous groups like Zerox Dreamflesh could find place on Belgian compilations, while Chris and Cosey lullabied their son to sleep with Irena Xero and her interdisciplinary art collective Zip. Bonus selects ten survivors from the fertile period (1982-1989), most of which were only issued on cassette in tiny editions of five to one-hundred copies. M Squared affiliates Prod join the extraterrestrial Software Seduction, He Dark Age's minimal wave neglect and the irreverent cut ups of The Horse He's Sick and MK Ultra & the Assassins of Light. The remaining tracks have been sourced from musicians' private archives and are being officially released on Oz Waves for the first time - Andy Rantzen's industrial dub Itch-E & Scratch-E precursor, the buoyant vocal-drone of Ironing Music, and Moral Fibro, Sydney's short lived answer to Weekend and Marine Girls. With detailed track-by-track notes, lines are drawn to Severed Heads, Scattered Order, and other antipodean post-punk royalty. As a DJ, Steele Bonus has gained notoriety via the exquisite selections that form his ongoing mix series Odd Waves. Sydney-born, Amsterdam-based, his graphic design has not only been responsible for sleeves on Efficient Space, but also trusted Amsterdam connoisseurs Music From Memory and Young Marco's Safe Trip. PLEX, MACEO Journey To Solar 2LP
Maceo Plex, aka Eric Estornel, presents Journey To Solar on Ellum Audio. Opening this essential release is "Hang 106", a forceful seven minutes of eerie and cosmic techno that stretches out in all directions as manic melodies rain down from above. "Traktion" is full of ominous drones, crashing percussion and somber pads and makes for a dramatic and driving track that is filled with pain. "Love On Time" picks up the pace with twisted synths roaming free above a motorik kick and icy hi-hats. Following is the slow and spaced-out groove of "The Replicant V1", with fat synths and dark spacecraft sounds circling you as the drums grow ever bigger. "Shoulder Of Orion" then drops into a rickety groove with soulful pads stretching off to the horizon as rough drums march below. "The Replicant V2" is a spacey and dramatic techno effort with widescreen pads and gurgling synths making for a turbulent ride. Proving he has real range, "Motor Rotor" is a deep and driving track that conveys a real sense of motion as it races along an intergalactic highway.

DEGIORGIO'S OFFWORLD, KIRK Two Worlds CD
2001 release. Originally signed to Island Blue, Kirk Degiorgio's new music was deemed too alternative and cutting edge for a major label. Having left Island, Kirk Degiorgio is back with his Offworld project, on Far Out Recordings. In keeping with Far Out's Brazilian roots, Two Worlds features warm Brazilian vibes provided by special guests J.R. Bertrami and Ivan Conte on some tracks. Kirk's earliest musical passions were soul and jazz (renowned for his enormous collection of rare Sun Ra and Blue Note recordings), until a fresh sound started filtering back from Detroit to London. The new cold soul of Detroit techno inspired Kirk to start producing his own music, learning his art, studying old Herbie Hancock records, and recording his first tracks using equipment borrowed from techno legend Derrick May. In the early '90s, he began making music under the name As One. And set up his own (now cult) label, ART, to release it - reasoning that no major label at the time would take him on. ART proved he had an ear for groundbreaking sounds. Mark Pritchard said this of the label: "ART Records produced some of the best ambient techno ever made." The label released future classics by Black Dog, Aphex Twin, and was the first to release Photek, and Carl Craig in the UK. From Kirk's humble DIY beginnings pioneering Detroit techno in Europe, subsequent high profile TV ad soundtracks have given him the financial freedom to take his music to new levels. This unique position puts him sonically at the forefront of experimentation and unlike most artists from his era he has kept his sound fresh. As a producer he is equally able to crossover to the mainstream - his 12" Nairobi was one of Pete Tong's singles of the month - making his name with different shades of deep techno - always soulful, always funky. Hear him relaxing and stretching out on Two Worlds, where techno meets breakbeats, jazz and soul in a warm, club friendly mix.

GRUPO BATUQUE O Tempo Do Samba CD
2005 release. Far Out Recordings are proud to release the fifth album from Grupo Batuque, O Tempo Do Samba. A feel-good album of up-tempo Brazilian rhythms that pays homage to the samba beat, O Tempo Do Samba features ten full-length album tracks, plus eight percussive and vocal edits, hot-on-the-heels of the Tony Allen remixes of the first single from the album, Afro Black. The core of the album was written by Ivan Conti who, as one third of Azymuth and a regular Far Out Recordings contributor, needs no introduction. He was helped by infamous percussionist Cidinho Moreira, who has previously performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon as well as the crème de la crème of Brazilian artists and, who on O Tempo Do Samba, is backed up on percussion by Pirulito, a regular member of Jorge Ben's legendary Banda Ze Pretinho in the '70s. Nico Rezende is a famous Brazilian pianist who had major success in the '80s as did composer, songwriter and saxophonist, Leo Gandelman, who worked on the searing horn arrangements that punctuate the album. The two lead vocalists are Fabiola and Claudemir De Silva. Fabiola was one of the most famous Brazilian samba singers from the '70s to the '90s, whilst newcomer Claudemir is both a poet and Sambista who is just beginning to get recognition for his impressive talents. Featuring seven vocal tracks including the 12" dancefloor monster "Afro Black" and the anthemic closing track "O Tempo", O Tempo Do Samba is undoubtedly Grupo Batuque's most accessible album to date. Whilst previous Grupo Batuque albums have often concentrated on the percussive rhythms, O Tempo Do Samba resets the balance with a set of songs, that, while keeping the percussion to the fore, form an album that will not only appeal to sambistas and percussionists, but anyone who digs the beat from Brazil.

BINARIO Binario CD
2008 release. Far Out Recordings boldly move from their popular Brazilian catalog to the guerrilla sound of Binario's self-titled debut album. The band from Ipanema Beach brings the sound of Rio's underground to Binario with rhythmically rich and sonically expansive tracks full of intrigue and originality. A seven strong gang, Binario have captured their unique mix of psychedelia, guitar fuzz, electronica and tripped out space funk. Recreating the passion of their wild live shows, where the gear is wired to car batteries to blast their illicit grooves to Rio's beaches, Binario's layered sound mixes brooding instrumentals with futuristic freak outs and Portuguese scat vocals. Formed in early 2002 by Lucas Vasconcellos (electric guitar and piano) and Bernardo Palmeira (drums and vocal), the addition of five new members Bruno DiLullo (electric bass), Fabio Lima (electric guitar), alongside Rafael Rocha (drums), Eduardo Manso (electric guitar, piano) and Estevão Casé (synthesizer, piano) has allowed the collective to create an album sounding like nothing you have ever heard - the two drummers creating dense grooves for the swirling guitars and synths to twist around. Binario site Gilberto Gil and Caetano as influences. Their experimental approach and interest in subverting frequency, harmony and groove is behind their love of Radiohead, Tortoise, The Velvet Underground, Can, Kraftwerk, Zappa and Miles Davis. The instrumental opener "Funeral" veers closer to the dark underworld of heavy rock than the sun-drenched bossa beaches of Rio with Zepplin-esque swirling stadium guitars, crashing symbols and metronomic bass lines. "Amor Liquido" sees lead vocalist Lucas Vasconcellos rhythmical rapping to a futuristic soundscape filled with paranoid synth bleeps and bounding guitars. With a truly addictive warped electro hook, "Vamanda" is the feel good track of this debut long-player, which comes crashing to a glorious close. "DDP" is a restless electro improve, complete with trademark-warped guitars. "E Ai Gelara Voltei" closes up with a wall of crunching bass and soaring guitars, suddenly stopping and demanding a repeat from start. As Binario producer David Brinkworth (Harmonic 33) says, "These guys love nothing better than playing, composing and producing music. I can't say I ever heard a cross word spoken between them." Without egos or arguments Binario put down their debut in just five days at Compania Dos Technicos - the old RCA rooms in Copacabana - a studio large enough to set up two drummers, three guitarists, bass and vocals.

Formed in Rio De Janeiro, 1976, Banda Black Rio pioneered the soul-funk movement in Brazil led by renowned saxophonist Oberdan Magalhaes. As global stars of the politically charged Black Rio movement, emerging almost a decade earlier from the Soul Brasileiro genre, BBR brought together Rio's black funk scene to rally against repression, a conservative record industry and white middle class press to mobilize disenchanted black Brazilian youth against the military dictatorship that mirrored the struggles in North America. Banda Black Rio released a string of unforgettable recordings in the late-1970s from 1977 debut album, Maria Fumaça, on Warner Music to 1978's Gafieira Universal on RCA Recordings that is considered one of the all-time great Brazilian jazz-funk records. Their third album, SaciPererê, was also released in 1978 by which point the band had made a lasting impact both in Brazil and abroad. Following the death of original band leader Oberdan Magalhães in 1984, the band stopped recording and performing. With a renaissance in Brazil's black music culture led by a new generation of soul, funk and hip hop artists, BBR finally arrived back with a brand new formation for comeback album Rebirth in 2000, before launching their most ambitious project to date with 2011's Super Nova Samba Funk - the group's sixth studio album produced and led by William Magalhães. Also features: Mano Brown, Aleh, Pyroman, Cesar Camargo Mariano and Don Pixote.

SEXY FI Nunca Te Vi De Boa CD
2012 release. Alongside Brazil's musical traditions exists a vibrant and contemporary musical landscape personified by the sultry yet captivating sound of Sexy Fi. Equal parts indie rock, blues pop and Brazilian soul, Nunca Te Vi De Boa mirrors Brazil's burgeoning role on the world stage. It's a metropolitan soundtrack to global living. From the sweet yet melancholic album's opener "Bermas" to the soaring horn-infused swankiness of "Loro Con Loro", this album glides between moments of discordant angst reminiscent of Sonic Youth and haunting muses of vocal-led pop sensibilities echoing Portishead. Including the stand out track "Keep Cooler" together with a remix by the very talented Born Ruffians (Warp Records), this body of work is a remarkable sophomoric effort defining the indie movement of Latin America. The journey this far is a tale of a musical connection formed in Brazil's capital city while studying at the University of Brasilia. The friendship of vocalist Camilla Zamith and guitarist Praxis would go on to span the Atlantic, with Camilla relocating to London and Praxis taking up residence in Rio de Janeiro, all the while collaborating across the digital expanse resulting in the duo's first album Chora Matisse, released in 2009 under the moniker of Nancy. On the back of these initial efforts the band was formed, appearing at a number of festivals across Brazil, ultimately embarking on a boutique tour in the US, culminating in showcase performances at the hallowed SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Fast forward to 2011 at Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago, under the engineering talents of John McEntire (Tortoise), the band's signature tropical-chic musicality was captured in this full-length offering, Nunca Te Vi De Boa. Art-house indie blues rock meets Brazilian soul.

The White Screen, the kings of trash/glam/rock n' roll, are re-inventing sex and lust in music. The two cousins, Gabriel and Gilbert Broid, are known as extra wild performers, and their shows already have a cult status in Israel with a large following of youngsters coming to every show and dressing as weird and wild as the band - they look almost like a cult of white zombies. They self-produced their debut album with the help of local producers such as Red Axes, Ryskinder, and Ram Orion. Their lyrics are very political and criticize the whole system and leadership in Israel - very not political correct. If you like to get kicked in the stomach with music, take a listen to this album.

MAHATMA X A Mobtown Suite Vol 1 LP
Very occasionally you stumble across a digital album that stops you in your tracks - Mahatma X's A Mobtown Suite Vol 1 is exactly that. Home Assembly put matters right and put this excellent album on vinyl. Mahatma X was formed in 2013, initially as an instrumental beat-tape project by producer MALK in St. Andrews, Scotland. He would later be joined in Philadelphia by Jhana Gumption as live drummer and Jahred as MC. The group mixes live instrumentation with samples to create hip-hop reminiscent of its golden age. 17 instrumental tracks have the flow of a beat-tape, with tracks bleeding into one another, going off at right angles, or colliding bumper-to-bumper. Deep and soulful, phat, jazzy and funky - all delivered with a bucket full of punk attitude. From the Adderley sampling opener "Come Thru" to the flutes and breaks of "Mahatma And The White Devil", flutes (again) and warm, gospel organ of "This Hustle Game", and the spacey synths and deep, dubby bassline of "Worddagawd", you know you're in for an exhilarating ride. But there are also other elements that seem to elevate this record above, what is now, a fairly crowded genre. Notably, there's the languorous, stoned guitar refrain on "We Live In Bawlmer, Baby". And it's there again amongst the snares and samples of "Bright Moments" and the sun-kissed "Mad Poetik". RIYL: Dilla, Madlib, DJ Mitsu, Onra, Stones Throw, Jazzy Sport.

MCMAHON, BRIAN Jaguar Ride: Memoir Of An Electric Eel Book
" 'The Electric Eels have left a serious scar on the face of music like few other originals have so far, a complex yet primitive pulsation of audio animosity shot through the universe right at the exact moment when nobody could comprehend it. Chicago may be the Midwest hub population-wise, but we all know that Ohio was punk's true Mesopotamia, and nothing spells that out more succinctly as the Electric Eels. Founding guitarist Brian McMahon's long-awaited memoir of his wild proto-punk days is finally here, the first-ever book covering the primordial ooze of Cleveland's wiry mutants in all their prickly-detailed glory. Over the course of 300 pages, you can really crawl inside the brain of one of America's finest overlooked musical miscreants, a fascinating glimpse into the vivid details and sickening dreams of one half of the songwriting contribution to the electric eels demented noise. To be so ahead of their time with so little to lose, now just the utterance of their name holds instant reverence with the punk cognoscenti, but that took a while. Once the meat of their recordings was unearthed and had time to circulate, now everyone is tripping over themselves to drool at their feet, and rightfully so. Jaguar Ride: Memoir Of An Electric Eel taps into the once impenetrable inner space of life around this ground-breaking band quite effortlessly. Like the eye of the universe opening up just enough for your weary legs to slip past and dangle in its toxic waters, McMahon leads us through his haziest experiences with incredible recollections of what it felt like to stand at the edge of the cliff of possibilities. The Electric Eels were true originals that streaked across time and space for a very short amount of time in the early-to-mid 1970s, creating nothing short of atonal atrocities glistening with punk promise. Deranged rust belt pop songs blanched in chemical waste and chopped mercilessly with a broken food processor and left for dead, only to be rediscovered when the coast was clear for cultures so noxiously curdled to finally thrive. Now that experience is finally here in book form for you to absorb and indulge, and as the mysteries of the eels go many layers deep, fear not and embody their pioneering spirit, finally in print.' --VictimofTime.com"

TIERSEN, YANN La Valse des Monstres LP
2017 repress; LP version. 2017 repress of this 2012 remastered reissue; originally released in 1995. With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become sought after as both a solo artist and soundtrack composer. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz, and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen's deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. Tiersen first became popular outside his native France for his score to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 film Amélie, but this was no overnight success; Tiersen had been working for years before the film brought him international acclaim. Tiersen's first album, La Valse des Monstres, includes several pieces composed for short films and plays, and introduces Tiersen's delicate but deeply emotional style featuring intricate arrangements of instruments as varied as toy piano, banjo, harpsichord, melodica, and carillon, as well as piano and guitar.

TIERSEN, YANN Rue Des Cascades 2LP
Double LP version. Yann Tiersen has sold hundreds of thousands of records worlds wide and even more soundtracks. Since 2009 he has been focused on playing live, with 270 shows spread over three world tours, which touched every continent. Tiersen presents a re-mastered edition of his second album 1996's Rue Des Cascades. With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become a sought-after composer, not only for his soundtrack work, but in his own right. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen's deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. Tiersen became popular outside his native country for his score to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 film Amélie. Born in Brest in Brittany, on June 23, 1970, Tiersen was raised in Rennes and made a name for himself as one of the star pupils at his local conservatory. Tiersen studied violin and piano from the ages of six to fourteen, and eventually trained to be a conductor. However, Tiersen rebelled against his classical training and, inspired by the likes of Joy Division and the Stooges, played guitar with several local post-punk-influenced bands during his later teenage years. At the same time, Tiersen was also composing soundtracks for short films and accompaniment for plays. Several of these pieces ended up on his first album, La Valse des Monstres (IDA 001CD/LP), in 1995 and introduced his delicate but deeply emotional style, and which also featured intricate arrangements incorporating instruments as varied as toy piano, banjo, harpsichord, melodica, and carillon, as well as piano and guitar. If La Valse des Monstres and its follow-up, 1996's Rue Des Cascades, were slow burners, Tiersen's third album, 1998's La Phare (IDA 003CD/LP), met a different fate; its single, "Monochrome," which was sung by French pop star Dominique A., was a radio hit and propelled the album, and Tiersen, to mainstream success in France.

LES MARQUISES A Night Full Of Collapses LP
LP version. The brilliant songwriter Jean-Sébastien Nouveau invites many musicians to give life to this new opus, Les Marquises' third album A Night Full Of Collapses. The newcomers are Matt Elliott (featured on "Feu Pâle", "The Beguiled", "Following Strangers", and "The Passing"), Agathe Max (Ofield, Farewell Poetry), Olivier Mellano, Christian Quermalet (The Married Monk), Jeff Hallam (Dominique A), Louis Montmasson, and François Clos. They join Jonathan Grancollot (Pan Pan Pan), Souleymane Felicioli, Julien Nouveau, Martin Duru (Immune), and obviously Jean-Sébastien Nouveau, who wrote all the lyrics and music while conducting the whole ensemble. Les Marquises' surprising 2013 Pensée Magique, an experimental pop-oriented album inspired by the cinema of Werner Herzog, Peter Brook, and Jean Rouch. Now Jean-Sébastien is back with A Night Full Of Collapses which, as its title suggests, is an eminently nocturnal record. Cinematic atmospheres are always present but the aforementioned references here give way to the work of David Lynch. The record is reminiscent of Badalamenti's compositions for Twin Peaks or the more recent dark-jazz of Dale Cooper Quartet and The Dictaphones as well as the first records by Bohren & Der Club of Gore. And while on the subject of disturbing and offbeat atmospheres, it is impossible not hear the ghosts of Talk Talk and especially Psychic TV floating here and there. But as always with Les Marquises, these are only first impressions. The influences and inspirations may seem clear at first sight but we soon find they make up a simple background whose sole purpose is to situate an action and provide context. Like the cinema which inspires him so much, Jean-Sébastien is cryptic in his approach and does not wish to clearly reveal his intentions to listeners. On the contrary, he aims to throw listeners off balance without ever attacking them and to lead them to lose themselves in his nocturnal, dreamlike, sometimes peaceful, sometimes unstable universe. A Night Full Of Collapses cultivates a mysterious aura conducive to wandering and reflection. Pensée Magique was both concise and yet abundant, even stifling for some. A Night Full Of Collapses is more grounded in some ways as it leaves aside bursts of pop in favor of a more jazzy framework which conveys its author's benevolent attitude.

CLOUP DUO, MICHEL Ici Et La-Bas 2LP
Double LP version. Following 2013's Minuit Dans Tes Bras, Michel Cloup is back with another instalment of his personal history - this time in a duo with the drummer Julien Rufié (Eryn Non Dae). Eleven tracks with the title Ici Et Là-Bas ("Here and Down There") which leaves little doubt as to the album's subject. "I stayed in Rome twice in 2012 for a residency and for a concert at the Villa Medici. It was a year and a half after the death of my mother who was Italian. I was still totally in mourning and really pretty upset. A bunch of memories came back to the surface at a time when I had lost a lot of my bearings. I hadn't finished writing Minuit Dans Tes Bras but I knew I'd found the starting point for the record after that." Over the whole album, Michel explores the many paths his own history has taken and, as is usually the case in his work, uses this to create a universal story which is at the heart of current events. "I realized that what I was going through, this late realization of my dual origins and the way I felt then had a resonance with certain events at the time. So I decided to tell my story in parallel with more general ideas, trying to hook up the personal and the political. The whole thing is a kind of fragmented scenario." The compositions are crystal clear and without embellishments although more arranged and less minimalist than on the two previous albums. The record as a whole sounds more rock in style and more direct particularly because of the playing of Julien Rufié. The songs are relatively short apart from the last two tracks where some Michel's most touching lyrics ever appear. "I wanted to break away from the monolithic side of the first two albums as a duo and move towards something more broken up and varied. Working with Julien gave me a new lease of life, new energy and quicker tempos. Ici Et Là-Bas is a little like my musical identity card and in any case it reflects all my obsessions - rock, French 'chanson', spoken-word, groove, experimentation, psychedelia, power or gentleness. I wanted it to be wild and with no barriers in the spirit of 'Check Your Head' by the Beastie Boys or 'Bubble and Scrape' by Sebadoh."

ZERO San Francisco LP
LP version. Ozkär Krapö on Zëro's fifth album San Francisco: "The first demo by Zëro - the reincarnation of Bästard!, a group which had its origins in the Deity Guns (initiators of the French post-rock movement) - is already ten years old and San Francisco is their fifth album. A red album- just like there have been white albums or black albums. A major album in a discography, in the history of a group. The style is the same as can be recognized in all the records but the total break with the past is fascinating. As is the image of the cover which shows three individuals sitting on a long seat with their faces erased, just merged together by the stains on the decrepit wall behind them. It's like a reverse image of the Greek Hydra - or rather of the Cerberus, the three-headed dog and guardian of Hell - with three bodies, three exceptional musicians who blend together and bloom into one sole head, one sound. Zëro now play as a trio and the group has gained in coherency. One after the other, the tracks flow fluidly together as a whole despite the complexity of the arrangements and the multiple cinematographic or musical references, with both sides of the record containing a mix of contained violence and tense atmospheres. All through this 35-minute trip, it is a pleasure to let yourself go taking in the explosive outbursts which have always been part of the group's identity and strike the ear in the same way as a stroboscope pervades the eye. But what is surprising about San Francisco is the tracks which are almost pop (in the best sense of the term, as The Feelies or Wire were immense pop groups) with their dynamic faux laidback nonchalance make you want to jump in the car with the radio on full blast and speed down an ocean road. Finally, cutting up, resolving or enhancing these tracks, the album's unity is above all derived from its passages of contained tension which are both psychedelic and noisy with menacing atmospheres harking back to their last appearances as a trio during readings by Virginie Despentes. Finally, it is perfectly natural that the trip should end in 'San Francisco', the title track of the album - a song which you would like to turn into a locked groove to indefinitely prolong this moment in which all the tension is resolved, stretched out and absorbed in a feeling of serenity and fullness."

GABLE Jolly Trouble LP
LP version. GaBLé are back and the great big joyful mess which accompanies the group will leave no-one indifferent. This is a full-on first contact, a total break with the context and almost fascinating - a perfect summary in fact of this absolutely whacked-out new analog pop opus full of the live energy which characterizes the trio onstage. JoLLy TrouBLe is more or less a translation of the French phrase "un beau bordel" and moves on further from the collage, DIY or chaotic rock style GaBLé have been known for in recent years. Following MuRDeD (2013), Gaëlle, Mathieu, and Thomas are back with music which is superbly thought-out, composed, produced and interpreted. These songs have a strong identity which makes them recognizable at first listen but their prime quality is to systematically throw listeners off balance. It's inventive and personal music which only groups of Gablé's calibre can produce. GaBLé also have the advantage of knowing how to put themselves in danger and also of knowing the best people to work with, as around a dozen friends - musicians, backing singers, technicians - were invited to exchange, suggest and talk out ideas for the record. JoLLy TRouBLe is the type of work which is full of humility while remaining both complex and ambitious. Rock, folk, song, jazz and of course electronic glitch or analog, even experimental music, JoLLy TRouBLe is all of these at once. Of course, let's not forget the term "alien" when talking about GaBLé's way of composing and interpreting these highly varied but coherent songs. There are thirteen songs whose subtle arrangements (clarinet, saxophone, flute, marimba, trumpet, machines and synthesizers plus all sorts of backing vocals) nonetheless highlight the combo's immediately attractive side and vocal talents. Here GaBLé are equally at home with sunny, benevolent pop ("On Purpose" and the first single "Tropicool") as with bursts of noise ("How Long"), psychedelic slow burns ("Porti"), punk riffing ("Marvoof") or faux ballads which are crazed but still really touching ("Youngsters", "Thinging"). Yes, JoLLy TRouBLe really is a truly beautiful mess, a truly beautiful record by a truly beautiful group enhanced by a truly beautiful gang of friends. The type of record you don't hear every day. CHAPELIER FOU Kalia LP
LP version. Chapelier Fou, aka Louis Warynski, is well known today for his exemplary discography: three albums - 613 (2010), Invisible (2012), and Deltas (IDA 098LP, 2014), three EPs - Darling, Darling, Darling... (2009), Scandale ! (2009), and Al Abama (2011) - and two 12" of remixes Protest EP (2014) and Fuses (IDA 098-2EP, 2015). Since the very beginning of his career, the French composer's songs always stimulated the imagination of his listeners. Many artists, theater, and movie directors or actors have asked to use his songs or requested commissioned works. "Les Métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia" is in this very specific category of commissioned work by Chapelier Fou. The mini-album Kalia is the very first instalment to be released as a record. In spring 2014, Béatrice Lartigue and Cyril Diagne from French artists' collective Lab212 contacted Chapelier Fou while he was finalizing his third album Deltas. The two invited him to work on a digital art installation project, "Les Métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia" the graphic work of which was entirely generated by code and entered in a DevArt (the famous firm offering databases for developers) contest. The project was then selected by Google to be presented at the "Digital Revolution" exhibition at the famous Barbican Centre of London alongside works from Björk, Will I Am, and Amon Tobin, among others. The nine songs presented on Kalia are striking because of their effectiveness and conciseness (each track is just over two minutes). The writing approach offered here is more radical than Louis's previous work. Each song is based on a simple idea from which the artist extracts its maximum potential to give a stripped down result. This enables listeners to get closer to the seductive inner substance of his work - a unique groove and sense of rhythm, simple and haunting melodies plus the ability to fill the sound space whatever the limits imposed. Above all, Kalia shows brilliantly that Chapelier Fou's music is just not a well-written mix of electronic music with violin. It is the breeding ground for research, experimentation and cohesiveness. It is an inspiration for its creators, for listeners and for the creative people using it in their own work. It is an interaction, a dialogue and perpetual questioning.

WINTER FAMILY South From Here LP
LP version. Winter Family is a duo of Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine who met in Jaffa in 2004. Their dark, saturated and dense music is described as "death swing", "weird wave" or "funeral pop". Their self-titled debut (2007) offered minimal music played by Xavier on pipe organ, harmoniums and piano backing strict spoken-word texts chanted by Ruth. Their second album, Red Sugar (SR 315CD/AV 032LP, 2011) was highly praised by critics. After they toured the world with their theatrical documentary Jerusalem Cast Lead (2011), they moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn. Attracted by New York/West Indian/Caribbean culture of their neighborhood, they started writing a new album. The block parties, community parades, and helicopters are frequent and Winter Family systematically capture all these sounds for their theatrical documentary work, some of them are also found on South From Here. At the end of 2012, Hurricane Sandy drowned all their equipment. They bought an old drum machine and an old synth and discovered sounds that were to make up the final color of South From Here. They began to mix South From Here in a cellar in Jaurès inspired by the sound of the Pierre Carré Orchestra and the reverb sounds at the Foire du Trône city fair. They recorded new parts of the album on tour - in the Guggenheim house in Kobe, Japan and during organ, voice and absinthe night sessions in the German Temple in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. For uncertain reasons, they then settled opposite Banana Beach in Tel Aviv. Ruth's lyrics attempt to translate the blindness into which Israeli society is definitively sinking. They published No World in collaboration with Yochai Matos (2015), released a cassette on the micro label Psychic Mule (2014), and completed South From Here, recording saccharine arrangements inspired by local weddings. The result of this long and painful calypso process is a mixture of pessimism and acceptance they summarize with these words: "Life is Beautiful". On South From Here, Ruth plays machines, drums, beatbox, and sings. Xavier plays old organs, synth, celesta, and piano. Some friends and their daughter join them here and there on the record: Ben McConnell (drums), Fabien Lehalle (bass), Victor Gachet (snare drum), Saralei Klaine (gaming and voice) and the voices of actors from Chekhov's The Seagull by Arthur Nauzyciel (Adèle Haenel, Dominique Reymond, Laurent Poitrenaud, Marie-Sophie Ferdane, etc.)

The story of Headache would perhaps have ended there if a certain Sasha Frere-Jones, one of today's most prominent and influential critics, hadn't written in the Los Angeles Times that "one of the best rock bands doing business now is from Gdansk, Poland." While on a trip to Poland, Stéphane Grégoire, label manager and founder of the Ici d'Ailleurs label, first met Trupa Trupa at a concert by another Polish talent, Stefan Wesolowski. The group gave him a copy of Headache which he put straight on his turntable on return to France. He was taken at once and fell straight in love. Soon enough, the reactions were coming in quick. Everyone thought, like Sasha Frere-Jones, that this really is one of the best rock albums of recent years. Trupa Trupa synthesizes what is best in the genre since the early '90s - from Pavement to Slint via The Black Angels - with unstoppable, spontaneous compositions with a real freshness. But it is primarily as an album, a true thoughtful and constructed set of 11 tracks which cannot be separated from each other, that Headache really comes into its own. The third album from a band that nobody saw coming, has been deemed a rare pearl by those who have had the chance to listen. "One of the best rock bands doing business now is from Gdansk, Poland. The lead singer of Trupa Trupa is poet Grzegorz Kwiatkowski, who sings (and speaks, sometimes) in English. The band recalls a less woozy version of Dungen, another band who know their '60s psychedelia but don't sound like thirsty revivalists. Kwiatkowski leans into the conversational loopiness of Syd Barrett and the band flowers behind him. Beauty and intensity get equal space here." --Sasha Frere-Jones, Los Angeles Times "This is incredible work. The result is their first moment of true greatness." --The Quietus "It's 2015, everyone, and did you hear? Bands are back in a big way, and Trupa Trupa is hands-down among the very best of 'em." --Tiny Mix Tapes

HEINALI Anthem LP
The second physical release for the newly-launched Injazero Records is the solo LP from Kyiv, Ukraine-based sound designer, Heinali, aka Oleg Shpudeiko. Crushing waves of distortion reminiscent of Ben Frost or Oneohtrix Point Never surround radiant sound-design in the mold of Jon Hopkins or Andy Stott. Pulsing, fluttering synth-worlds, like those of Emeralds or Popol Vuh, orbit through a galaxy of texture not unlike Clint Mansell's Moon score (2009). Heinali recently constructed the acclaimed soundtrack to PlayStation's 2016 videogame Bound. Much of his commercial and commissioned work for film, television, and dance (dating back to 2009) evokes the string-orientated subtlety and tenderness of Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richter or film score great Hans Zimmer. "A truly complete work, a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, and like all good stories, it leaves you with a sense of joy, the joy of knowing you have just experienced something unique and beautiful." --A Closer Listen "Achingly, longingly beautiful." --Terrorizer "Its brilliance lies in its authority to get inside your heart and suspend you in awe." --Sea of Tranquility. Comes on 180 gram, red vinyl.

LANDSIDE Uncharted Remixes EP 12"
Landside is the collaboration between Italian producers Hunter/Game and the Icelandic band Kúra. The sound draws as much from the deep vibe and melancholy ambience of Kúra's reflective, dubby moods, as it does from the more insistent groove of Hunter/Game's dancefloor roots. With four releases under their belt and more to follow, Landside are primed to get a remix EP. From the stormy modulated chords of Robert Hood and trickling pads crafted by Etapp Kyle, to the dystopian narratives expressed by Bambounou and Edanticonf, the re-visionings provide additional star-power to what is already a fine, shimmering series.

WALTON Taiko EP 12"
The third release on Madam X's burgeoning imprint comes from Manchester based Walton. The A-side features two fierce and stark club cuts, with "Tension" setting the tone for the murkiness inside. "Taiko" hinges on a groove that bounces and slams its way through the runtime with Mary Ann Hobbs a fan of "the dark, tribal textures". The pace is kept up with two more dense, atmospheric tracks. "Black Hole" employs a heavy set, feverish use of percussion and "Zen" acts as a more cinematic cut, almost like a weightless, demonic lullaby.

GAS Box 10LP BOX/4CD
Limited repress. Wolfgang Voigt is a man of many means and monikers, having engendered a unique take on electronic expressionism across multiple media - from riotous early '90s acid to cyber-folkloristic techno or the abstract drama of his current Rückverzauberung project, Voigt is a pioneering vision to be found on vinyl, canvas or flickering screens. Ranking among the most dense, hypnotic, atmospheric recordings in his oeuvre, the Gas releases have since become internationally recognized classics with a cult following, hailed as "a wondrous high point in the history of electronic music" by Pitchfork and considered "some of the most influential albums of the '90s" by The Guardian. From foggy dub techno to anthemic electronica and loop-based ambient techno, the list of acts, tracks and even genres influenced by the full-lengths and EPs crafted under the Gas umbrella between 1995 and 2000 seems endless, giving these long sold-out original releases even more of a near-mythical quality. Following the much-acclaimed (and out-of-print) retrospective Nah Und Fern from 2008, Kompakt has decided that it's high time for a reissue that features the core Gas albums, originally released by the legendary Mille Plateaux imprint in the '90s, the records that introduced the project's trademark sound between Schönberg and Kraftwerk, Wagner and the bass drum, "an endless march through the underwoods of an imaginary, misty forest and into the disco." Inside this comprehensive anthology, listeners will experience Zauberberg (1997), Königsforst (1998), Pop (2000) and the sought-after Oktember 12 inch (1999), all together available as luxurious ten LP and four CD edition. Box is the most comprehensive version of these releases ever. The vinyl features edits that were previously unavailable on wax - with each album being presented as three LP pressings (instead of the original two LP pressings), for extended playtime and superior sound quality, finally released the way this music was intended to be heard. This highly collectible box set comes with an art-print book featuring newly processed and previously unreleased photography from the Königsforst woods around Cologne, in the style of the legendary, trail-blazing Gas artwork. Box is to be considered as the definitive take on a unique sound cosmos and an extraordinary period of music. An essential outing for every serious fan of electronic music.

MCMULLAN, HAYES Everyday Seem Like Murder Here 2LP
Double LP version. Housed in a gatefold, Stoughton tip-on jacket. "Bluesman. Sharecropper. Church deacon. Civil Rights activist. Hayes McMullan should be a name on every Blues aficionados' short-list and thanks to the preservation fieldwork carried out by one of the genre's greatest researchers some 50 years ago - it might soon be. Born in 1902, Hayes McMullan was discovered by the renowned American roots scholar, collector and documentarian Gayle Dean Wardlow. Wardlow, author of the seminal blues anthology Chasin' That Devil Music - Searching For The Blues, may be most famous for uncovering Robert Johnson's death certificate in 1968, finally revealing clues to the bluesman's mysterious and much disputed demise. Moreover, in his tireless and committed mission to preserve the Blues for future generations, he captured McMullan's raw talent on tape and on paper. Wardlow recorded these sessions, transcribed the songs and now, writes the sleeve-notes for this landmark release. Wardlow and McMullan met by chance on one of the former's record-hunting trips, in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, in 1967. Having introduced himself to McMullan on a hunch, it turned out this unassuming elderly man had not only heard of Wardlow's idol, Charley Patton, but had played alongside him in the 1920s, as part of a brief musical journey that took him from the plantation to the open roads and juke joints of the Depression-era South. Striking up a friendship that was deemed unorthodox in 1960's Mississippi, Wardlow traveled to McMullan's sharecropper's shack and convinced him to play guitar for the first time since he quit the Blues for the Church in the '30s. 'Hayes was playing like no one I had ever heard,' Wardlow writes with amazement. Wardlow visited McMullan on a handful of occasions, always taking his recorder, a guitar and some whiskey with him. It was during these visits that Wardlow captured - with surprising clarity - the songs that make up Everyday Seem Like Murder Here. Hayes McMullan passed away at the age of 84 in 1986, his talent and legacy largely unknown. 'Reflecting now on our brief time together, I marvel at the small glimpse of something much larger I was lucky to have captured,' writes Wardlow. 'The few old snapshots I took, the handful of tunes we recorded, and his brilliant performance of 'Hurry Sundown' captured on film are all that's left of the musical legacy of Hayes McMullan, sharecropper, deacon, and - unbeknownst to so many for so long - reluctant bluesman.' All tracks previously unreleased (except track #3); Remastered from original tapes; Liner notes by blues historians Gayle Dean Wardlow & John Miller."

EPIRO, DONATO Rubisco 12"
Following Fiume Nero (2014), the young Italian composer has moved from the raw primordial chaos that characterized his first work to develop a reflection on how a hypothetical absence of humans and biological life could modify industrialized and civilized spaces. Using field recordings, obscure samples, and FM synthesis, Epiro draws his abstract landscapes as a series of overexposed and imprecise pictures made by concrete and organic architectures, amorphous rhythmic patterns, and repetitive sequences. The result is a record that plays with taut minimal touches, inspired by the work of Egisto Macchi, Angus MacLise, Demdike Stare, and Fis.

MODULATORS, THE Tomorrow's Coming LP
"Formed in 1980, New Jersey's the Modulators are one of the unsung greats of the American power pop scene. Initially the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Joe Riccardello with help from producer/lyricist (and Vintage Vinyl Records owner) Rob Roth, Ricardello released his first single Girl Trouble in 1980 just before bringing on friends Mark Higgins (guitar) and Mark 'Cakes' Westlake (drums) to join the band. As a fully-formed trio, the Modulators began playing out across New Jersey in the early 80's and recorded tracks for two local compilations and the band's second, enduring single She's So Cynical in 1982. Live gigs and songwriting continued, with the band often writing and recording more material than their release schedule could keep up with. Finally in 1984, the band released their first and only LP, Tomorrow's Coming on Roth's Vintage Vinyl Records. Full of timeless gems and quintessential 80's power pop anthems, the record is now regarded as a genre classic by power pop collectors. Tracks like 'Spin Me Around,' 'If You Let Her Go,' and 'Lost Without a Sound' display the Modulators' smart songwriting, catchy hooks, and effortless pop sensibility. Though the band continued to play the tri-state area until 1986 (and every now and then since), Tomorrow's Coming was the Modulator's last vinyl release. Bringing together the band's entire discography with an additional 14 unreleased songs and demo tracks and liner notes from power pop collector Steve Borchardt, Manufactured Recordings is proud to present the definitive release of this power pop classic."

"Smart Remarks began in 1980 with Todd Ellis (guitar, vocals), Chris Gordon (bass), and Ant Barbalace (drums) as an original punk/ power pop trio out of Bordentown, NJ. School friends and co-workers at the local Ocean Spray Cranberry factory, the band was influenced by early power pop bands like Paul Collins' Beat, The Records, The Knack, and especially the Staten Island, NY three-piece Dirty Looks. Smart Remarks recorded their first single Was It Something We Said? in 1982, which spawned the power pop classic 'Mary's Got Her Eye On Me.' Often the opening act for larger bands that came through town (The Replacements, The Ramones, Joan Jett, Haircut 100), the band became the favorite house band at Trenton, NJ's famous City Gardens Night Club. Smart Remarks re-entered the studio in 1984 to record the five track EP Seriously Speaking with new bassist Steve DeStefano, which would become their final recording together. Collecting Smart Remarks' entire discography and including liner notes from Randy 'Now' Ellis, the famed owner of City Gardens, Foreign Fields: 1982- 1984 is a must for fans of classic, catchy US power pop."

DALTON, KAREN Green Rocky Road CD
2017 repress; now at mid-line pricing; originally released in 2008. Another chapter in the ever-evolving story of Karen Dalton. These are home recordings, taped by Joe Loop, as was the acclaimed double live album Cotton Eyed Joe (MEGAUK 015CD, 2007). These recordings were made at Dalton's home in Boulder, Colorado, on a reel-to-reel. It sounds like the album Dalton would have released in 1963 had she been given the opportunity. Here are the first takes of "Ribbon Bow," "Katie Cruel," and "In the Evening," and a more complete document of Dalton's repertoire on banjo. During their first long stay in Colorado, Dalton and her husband Richard Tucker were lucky enough to find in Joe Loop an enlightened club owner who would book them often but who was also a self-taught sound engineer. Joe Loop recorded a couple of Dalton's shows, and would also occasionally bring his reel-to-reel machine to Dalton and Tucker's house on Pine Street so they could record their burgeoning musical ideas. Some jams were recorded with Tucker trying his hand at the saxophone, without the ease he showed on vocals. But Dalton was overwhelmed by the reel-to-reel machine's possibilities and would gladly experiment by herself with overdubs -- something of a portastudio a couple of decades before it became a musician's household commodity. By the grace of Joe Loop's faith, we now have a document of what a 1963 Karen Dalton album would be like.

MASIN/CHARLES HAYWARD, GIGI Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2 CD
"Following the reissue of the entire recorded output of South London-based experimental act This Heat and its successor, Camberwell Now, Modern Classics Recordings holds the lens up to a special split album created by one of the driving forces behind those groups - drummer Charles Hayward - in collaboration with Italian musician Gigi Masin, whose looping, rhythmic, electronic compositions have seen his cult following grow in his four decades as a recording artist. Originally released on Belgium's Sub Rosa label in 1989, Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2 is a split LP on which Masin's eight tracks occupy side A and Charles Hayward's long-form piece (at 21 minutes long), 'Thames Water Authority', occupies side B. Geography may have separated the two artists, who each recorded their pieces in isolation from the other, but there's a commonality to their approach. Previously, Masin had released the inspired 1986 album Wind (BAR 003-015LP), while Hayward's music had long been influenced by the landscape and society of London and the UK. For this album, the label challenged the two musicians to write about the waterways of their respective cities, Venice and London. For Masin, that meant describing the human interactions related to the Italian city's famous landmarks. 'Places, faces, memories... that's what most of the people love to find when they travel to Venice - some kind of magic that's deep in the city,' he writes in the new liner notes accompanying this new re-release. For Hayward, it meant describing the physicality of water, the 'densities and energies' as he puts it, and the politics of it too. Writes Hayward: 'Water was being privatized at the time, the profit margin had been factored in, cost-cutting was implicit, people were being poisoned. Water was a political thing; it still is." Dive in. First time on CD (outside of Japan); Track notes by Gigi Masin and Charles Hayward; Restored and remastered audio; Features the Masin track 'Clouds' as sampled by To Rococo Rot and Björk."

DEMDIKE STARE Wonderland CD
A project that came to life fueled by collector's obsession and a life-long willingness to dive head-first into unknown musical wormholes, Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty have never been defined by a singular musical trajectory. Their opening salvo of releases dabbled with the aesthetic of the occult and provided an alternate, parallax view of the Italian Library records with which they were both obsessed at the time, but as their long running mixtape series and brilliantly curated DDS label attest, their interests extend far outside the crevices of early electronic music and into dance music, dancehall, roots, jungle, techno, industrial, noise and beyond. While 2013's Testpressing series provided an outlet for mostly club-based productions shot from the hip, Wonderland, their first album since 2012's Elemental, has been constructed with a narrative in mind. From the clipped hard-style of the opening "Curzon", through the jaunty dancehall mutations of "Animal Style" and "FullEdge", exotica/house refractions on "Hardnoise", the frankly ridiculous, bass-bin destroying jungle ructions on "Sourcer", or the extended tease of "Overstaying", it's probably the most enjoyable and loose-limbed hour of music in their catalog, or that you'll likely hear in these weird, angst-ridden times. YONKERS, MICHAEL Michael Lee Yonkers LP
An original sealed pressing of Michael Yonkers's Michael Lee Yonkers from 1974. Self-recorded in 1971 and '72, Michael Lee Yonkers has often been referred to as Michael's "country" album. It is many folks' favorite of his early works, and is likely the weirdest. The roughhewn quality of these recordings has caused listeners to make comparisons with other "real people" outsiders like Grudzien and the Holy Modal Rounders, but there are more obvious, well-known comparisons (Townes Van Zandt) that are at least as appropriate. There are clear references to various classic country stylings in these songs, even as Michael's unique distillation of their influence lends a delightfully skewed mischievousness to the proceedings. Released in 1974 and rescued from deep inside Yonks's storage space/weirdo museum.

DO NASCIMENTO, FABIANO Tempo dos Mestres CD
"Tempo dos Mestres (Time of the Masters) is the second album from the tireless, young Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento. It finds its roots in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, passed down through generations of Native Brazilians, and is imbibed by the Afro-Brazilian culture that arose after Portuguese colonization. This blend is not new in Brazil, and is represented musically by great Brazilian musicians both known and celebrated -- the guitarist Baden Powell and catalyst Hermeto Pascoal, both direct influences on Do Nascimento -- and less exposed, like the experimentalist Carioca, one of Do Nascimento's mentors, and the Brazilian psychedelic pioneer Lula Cortes, whose album Paebiru rewrote Brazilian rock's history in 1975. It is the third Brazilian album released on Now-Again, following Seu Jorge and Almaz and Do Nascimento's debut Dança dos Tempos. Do Nascimento's is joined on Tempo dos Mestres by his long time percussionist, Ricardo 'Tiki' Pasillas on trap drums and percussion, and Sam Gendel on saxophone and flute. Vocals are performed by Thalma de Freitas and Carla Hasset. These tracks were recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, straight to 2" analog-tape, and only sparingly mastered to focus on the subtleties of the performances. Do Nascimento's fans include legendary percussionist Airto Moreira, who recorded Dança dos Tempos and can be found playing live with Do Nascimento. 'He's Brazilian but (his mind is) from a place in Brazil that is not common.' Moreira states. 'Fortunately, we still have some musicians who like to play music and who like to touch the instrument and who like that energy!' Do Nascimento takes his music, and his place in Brazil's lineage, seriously, and he often travels the vast country, spending time in the rainforest, living life as it was lived in the distant past, while studying with still living masters as he searches for new directions of the path trod by the geniuses whose influence abounds in contemporary music, but whose names are still unfamiliar. 'Being a musician -- feeling, studying, experiencing, living music -- this comes first, right?' Do Nascimento questions. ' Second, we hope that the depths of knowledge in the music from the masters before us can be shared more, each time, to the younger generations coming.' In Tempo dos Mestres Do Nascimento answers himself with a beautiful entry into the evolving language of timeless Brazilian music."

In Tempo dos Mestres Do Nascimento answers himself with a beautiful entry into the evolving language of timeless Brazilian music."

REV GALEN Rev Galen 10"
2015 release. In the company of Gilles Poizat (guitar, trumpet, voice), Catherine Hershey sings the poems of her grandfather Galen E. Hershey, pastor-farmer in Pontiac, Michigan. The poems come from a collection of poetry written between 1946 and 1976. Features Frédéric Jean on whistle on "Dilemma & Decision". Mixed by Gilles Olivesi; Mastered by Harris Newman; Illustration by Gwénola Carrère. Florian Caschera on the release: "As his name readily admits, this disc of tranquil hallucination (but beware) bursts forth in all its absurd duration around eight poems that fire the Reverend Galen Hershey, grandfather of Catherine Hershey, who sings here, recorded more or less in secret, in his notebooks. They are simple and beautiful poems, which have the simplicity and beauty of poems which are recorded more or less secretly in notebooks. The secret of the notebooks is more or less the simplest and the most beautiful of the secrets... Gilles Poizat, trembling in the reverb of a patient guitar, tells his furtive notes like a string of bones, and pulls a trumpet the kind of subtly diffracted traits that are heard on Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom (1974), whistles as we hide to cry and sing like a baby whale dreaming (or he shouts, like Jad Fair stuck at the top of the slide, it could make you laugh but it's heartbreaking). Catherine Hershey, eyes wide open on what comes out of her mouth and makes of this smoke, gives to her melodies the curve of the most intriguing calves. They are sad and full songs, somewhat veiled, whose hearts overflow everywhere, but with a quiet dawn sure of its dawn legitimacy. As all the music summons another, one will think of the rhymes of Ivor Cutler, the refrain of Pearl in The Night of the Hunter (1955), to the sweetest ballads of Shirley Collins, to some Elizabethan airs as they were already, in another life, made effervescent by Syd Barrett. We will think of it without it hindering us in anything. And then we will not think at all, too busy to look after our blues, these exquisite blues bring our souls the songs which we know will never be forgotten."

GOLDEN FILTER, THE Still // Alone 2LP
Optimo Music present the second full-length from The Golden Filter, Still // Alone. After relocating to London and playing shows around Europe for a year and a half, self-imposed pariahs Penelope Trappes and Stephen Hindman delved into creating a two-sided existential opus by renting out old studio spaces around the UK and using mostly analog '80s instruments, machines, and effects. An album about being in love with pure solitude, Still // Alone is separated into two distinct records. Record one, Still, is a hypnotic meditation for the nightclub. Wavy patterns of sound and light bounce off of Penelope's literary vocal bursts, layered over the ominous deep synths and arpeggiators, held together only by a strict 4/4 beat - the rhythm, ironically forcing the body to move, however internally focused and mindful, still. Record two, Alone, takes the club offline and into the fringes of raw, odd pop. Ever-prominent drum machine beats rule, while love and loss permeate the four atmospheric goth songs. Music for dancing alone. "Behind the cotton wool is hidden a pattern. . . the whole world is a work of art . . . there is no Shakespeare . . . no Beethoven . . . no God; we are the words; we are the music; we are the thing itself." --Virginia Woolf

HEAT EXCHANGE Reminiscence LP
LP version. Formed in Toronto, Canada, in the late '60s, Heat Exchange are known for their three fantastic 45s for the Yorkville label - released in the early '70s - on which they mixed hard rock with psychedelic, heavy progressive and funk-rock sounds. So, it's a major surprise that in 1972, the band recorded more stuff with the intention of releasing an album. But in the end, the album deal fell through and only four of those tracks were released as part of their 45s. Soon after, the band disbanded. Luckily, the band members have kept a copy of the master tape all these years. So, presented here for the first time ever are the complete Heat Exchange studio recordings, including their three 45s plus the previously unreleased recordings they recorded in 1972 for their never-released LP. Fabulous UK-sounding, heavy progressive, and psychedelic hard rock with top-level musicianship, well-constructed songs, powerful vocals, sax, flute, wah-wah, organ, and a solid rhythm section. RIYL: King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Samurai (UK), Web's I Spider (1970), Human Beast, Deep Purple. BARRECA, MARC Aberrant Lens CD
"Marc Barreca's seventh solo album for Palace of Lights extends his work with a broader and deeper palette of synthesized and sampled sound, including sources as diverse as prepared guitars, pianos, Indonesian metallophones and glass harmonica. The music of Aberrant Lens employs long MIDI delays, synced MIDI processing via MAX for Live and extreme warping of disparate looped sound sources driven into entirely new states. The results are new, coherent aural structures: music that questions traditional definitions of ambient and electronic forms. And, to the educated ear, within this search for innovation and experimentation Aberrant Lens reveals many of Barreca's earliest influences. Even when integrated in thoroughly non-retro compositions, the hints of homage to Cluster and the first Fripp & Eno releases inhabit these twelve new settings. Marc Barreca has been creating and performing electronic music since the mid-1970s. His 1980 album, Twilight, was one of the earliest releases on Palace of Lights. His cassette-era album Music Works for Industry is being reissued by the RVNG spin-off Freedom To Spend, and his early cassette work is included in the upcoming VOD box set American Cassette Culture, which also features Marc's early electronic music group Young Scientist. His work is included in the collection of The British Library."

OTTO, ANDI VIA CD
VIA is Andi Otto's fourth solo album, on which he presents his music under his actual name instead of the Springintgut moniker. Hundreds of micro-samples of vocal, instrumental and percussive snippets which Otto found on vintage Indian movie soundtrack LPs, build the atmospheric foundation for the eleven tracks. Embraced by a slow, relaxed and steady kick drum, this buzzing backdrop features a bunch of instruments and musicians. First of all, there are the mesmerizing vocals of MD Pallavi on two tracks. Her South Indian singing style erupts into a virtuosic, percussive solo on both "Bangalore Whispers" and the title track "VIA". Andi Otto and MD Pallavi worked together in a studio in Bangalore during the summer of 2016. Throughout the album, Otto's string instruments - cello, harp and psaltery - are woven into the beat structures or play the themes of the tracks ("Kyoto Pebbles", "Bandini Beach"). In the STEIM studio in Amsterdam, Andi Otto had the chance to record the engineer Sybren Danz with his self-built modular synthesizers as well as a Roland System 100, one of the greatest classics of analog synths ("Everybody Needs A Modular Kraut Session", "Dharti Cash Puke"). VIA introduces an experimental take on the slowed-up dancefloor, which at times reminds of artists like James Pants, Deadbeat or Onra. The grooves are repetitive, but they never dwell in one place for too long. VIA is a journey, an ode to the state of mind of being on the way. There is no better way imaginable to see Andi Otto's experiences of his tours and travels turn into an album. Andi Otto is a producer and musician from Hamburg. He has developed a sensor-extended cello at STEIM since 2008 with which he tours worldwide, especially to Asia. He researches about ways to connect the musician's body and electronic sounds in new ways on stage. However, as a DJ he sticks to the classic turntables and is passionate about vinyl. Andi has written a PhD thesis on the history of sensor-based musical instruments and teaches in universities and art schools in Bern and Berlin.

APPLEHEAD Applehead's Rache LP
The return of Andy Votel's most elusive alter-ego with a new album of delirious and darkened collage pieces brought to you by his own Pre-Cert Home Entertainment label, run alongside longtime spar, Sean Canty (Demdike Stare). Hiding behind "Cowardly Pseudonyms" inspired by the incognito exploits of Jean-Pierre Massiera and a long list of Italian library musicians, Applehead is the twice-removed alter-alter-alter ego project of Dead-Cert, Finders Keepers, Cacophonic, Pre-Cert label boss and designer Andy Votel, aka Anworth Kirk, aka Xian Orphic, aka Tandy Love, aka Tony Deval, aka Neotantrik, and the list goes on. This hang-dried and un-cured collection of low-brow electronics, oblique movie-tones, cold-funk, ready-made poetry and domestic plunderism spans five years since the debut Applehead LP on the Pre-Cert label (2011). Cut and pasted from a pool of overnight rare synth-lends, some obscure foreign-pop fix-ups and a stash of emotive tonal sketches and tape-edits (prepared when touring Milan and Rome with Suzanne Ciani and Northern Italy with the blink-missable Stanza Nera punk-funk project) these multifarious, Crepaxian comic-book compositions have clearly absorbed a strong Italian DIY muse. With respectful nods to Daniela Casa, Raskovich, Frizzi, and AR Luciani, Applehead also combines surrealist shlock with Letterist informed random Roman female spoken word and occasional back-handed salutes to Throbbing Gristle and NWW projects. This self-motivated, naturalistic response to the broad vista that has informed 20 years of Votel's unwaning multi-dis adventures offers an infrequent opportunity to hear his personal problematic-pop and scalpel-happy art in the comfort of his own creative confides complete with square-pegs and sandpaper. Mastered by Matt Colton. Edition of 500.

MIRKO LP1 CD
LP1 is the debut edition from London based artist Mirko Vogel. Recorded across almost three years, the record is a sprawling mass of ambient texture, remote harmony and uneasy pulse. Initially born out of extended periods of intense touring with Cut Copy, the earliest recordings were an antidote to the nature of repetition on the road. In the blur of travel, Mirko found a particular pleasure in an attempt to slow or pause time through sound. Moments of this hazy slowness have lingered and found their way onto this debut edition. Following a re-location from Australian to the UK, LP1 began to take on a more distinct character. Whilst working on a variety of film, television and software projects simultaneously, Mirko found his focus shifting. The nature of the recordings began to bend and blur at their edges. Gradually, through a process of subtle iteration the record's particular shape and color began to take hold. LP1 is ultimately a record that compresses time. Each piece has travelled across many territories under various circumstances. With this has come a particular interiority of place. The sound itself creates a moment in which places the listener far from the exceedingly aggressive pace of change of each day. Mirko Vogel has worked and performed as a musician, engineer and programmer in the audible spectrum for the mid-90s. Born in Hamburg, Germany he immigrated to Australia in the late '80s. At the age of 14, he bought his first analog synthesizer and computer starting an affair that would continue to this day. Mirko's projects have taken him to over 60 countries with a broad spectrum of work and collaborations. Planting his feet over the pacific in the early 2000s with Sekiden to numerous world tours as an engineer and programmer with Cut Copy. Mirko's work as studio engineer for Cut Copy's Aria winning and Grammy-nominated album Zonoscope (2011), as well as their follow-up Free Your Mind (2013), was the beginning to a more reflective and studio based sound focus. In 2012, Mirko relocated to London and began a cynosure approach to his solo work.

KINGSTON ALL-STARS Presenting Kingston All-Stars LP
LP version. Composed of some of the most gifted musicians to ever walk the mean streets of the Jamaican capital, the Kingston All-Stars project is a celebration of the heyday of vintage reggae, taking the form of a contemporary music project that pays homage to the glory days of the music's past. Spearheaded by Canadian producer, engineer, and musician Moss Raxlen, who was also the driving force behind the Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae (2009) feature documentary, the Kingston All-Stars revolve around a robust core of legendary session players. Drumming mastermind Sly Dunbar is of course half of the great rhythm duo, Sly and Robbie; bassist Jackie Jackson joined the Supersonics at the birth of rock steady, was a part of the Beverley's All Stars, and has been a touring member of Toots and the Maytals since the early 1970s. Guitarist Hux Brown was a rhythm player in the All Stars and Toots' band; lead axe man Mikey 'Mao' Chung was in the Now Generation and made an impact in both the Revolutionaries and the Compass Point All Stars. Keyboardist Robbie Lyn was an important session player at Studio One in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and was also part of the In Crowd band. After something of a false start in the mid-60s as a drummer and singer with the Caribbeats, Ansel Collins switched to the keyboards, making an instant splash with "Night Doctor" (one of Sly Dunbar's first recordings), and then reached the UK pop charts through hit recordings like "Double Barrel" and "Monkey Spanner". The Kingston All-Stars project does not end there: the resident drummer of Lee Perry's Black Ark, Mikey 'Boo' Richards also contributed, as has the sax and trombone team of Everton and Everald Gayle. There are kettle drums from Supersad and Calvin, lilting steel pan from Dean Barnett, and guitar and percussion from Roger White and Mossman, as well as Stranger Cole and Trevor McNaughton of the Melodians on backing vocals. The album's guest vocalists include: Cedric Myton of the Congos and his singing sparring partner, RZee Jackson, the original Greenwich Farm Rastaman Prince Allah, and Alana Jonsana. Everything was captured on tape at Mixing Lab studio in Kingston during the winter and spring of 2016, with further overdubbing and mixing overseen by Moss in Montreal. This album is only the beginning for the Kingston All-Stars.

VA The Hired Hands: A Tribute To Bruce Langhorne 2CD
"Compiled by Dylan Golden Aycock, Loren Connors, and Suzanne Langille, The Hired Hands is an homage to one of the greatest and most infamous guitarists alive, Bruce Langhorne. His music has influenced and touched a lot of lives over the years, either through his soundtrack work with Peter Fonda or his studio work in the 1960s as the go-to hired hand for Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Odetta, and many others. Browsing his wikipedia page, one is informed of the volume of work he accomplished throughout the '50s, '60s and '70s. Scissor Tail Editions was lucky enough to release Langhorne's score to Peter Fonda's 1971 anti-western The Hired Hand on vinyl in 2012. Artists were asked to cover or reinterpret a song of their choice from the soundtrack. No rules were made on whether the music should be derivative of a certain song -- if the soundtrack inspired a mood, than the artist could use their intuition. Langhorne has come on hard times in recent years, having suffered a stroke that prevents him from playing the guitar. A large percentage of the profits for this tribute go to Langhorne and his family."

VA Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition Vol. 1 LP+CD
The first volume of Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition gathers traditional music from different areas of the Indonesian archipelago, featuring music from Sulawesi, The Moluccas Islands (Spice Islands), and Central Java. In the first track from Sulawesi ("Gandrung Bulo"), the lead is taken by the percussion made of bamboo drums, later joined by two male voices in the second track. This is traditional entertainment music which is typically played at weddings, feasts, and others special occasions. The last track is an instrumental one featuring the story-telling of an epic ballad. The singer is playing a traditional Indonesian instrument called the sinrili. The track from the Moluccas ("Tjakalele") is a typical warrior dance, and it was recorded in the main city of Maluku Islands. The music from Bali is performed by a chorus of seventy-eight men sitting in circle around the actors, during the representation of the so-called Ketchak (Monkey) Dance, which is still a big attraction for travelers coming to Bali. The selection from Central Java is a traditional piece called Perdjuritan dance ("Perdjuritan"), which is some sort of a soldiers' dance. It is performed by a traditional Javanese orchestra (called Gamelan) which consists of drums, metal rattles and whistles. The last sample is recorded in the capital city of Jakarta and represents an example of the so called Sundanese music, typical of the western region of Java. Another example of traditional old entertainment music to be played during various festivities. Shiok! VA Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition Vol. 2 LP+CD
The second volume of Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition covers music from the vast island of Sumatra (West Indonesia), The Moluccas Islands, and the island of Bali. In the first sample from Sumatra ("Gondang Mula Mula"), recorded near the awesome Lake Toba, is a ceremonial overture played during weddings and special occasions. The band is comprised of four instruments: two "Ketchapis" (sort of a two-string ukulele), one "Serenar" (a wind instrument), and one simple metal spoon tapped against a glass bottle. The second track ("Andung Andung") is music conceived to put people in the right mood for working in the fields, or boating on Lake Toba. Some sort of predecessor, if you will, of the "Ayo kerja" slogan and movement. The third track ("Hasa Hatan") is a coda to all ceremonies in the region, and carries a benediction. The track from Moluccas ("Menari Sawat") is a Muslim traditional dance from the area (menari), while sawat is the name of this type of music. The recording is taken in a small fishing village. The album moves to Bali, where the first track ("Pubradaya") is a sitting dance performed by a local Gamelan orchestra. The following four tracks ("Barong Dance: Preren, Omang, Castel, and Sadewa") are all part of a suite of drums and gamelan music performed for the dance of a Barong, which is a mythical creature represented as half lion and half dog. The last two pieces are typical cremation music played on the tower at the cremation ceremonies in Bali, extremely interesting and unique. Shiok! KUBISCH AND FABRIZIO PLESSI, CHRISTINA Two And Two LP
Song Cycle Records present a reissue of Two And Two, the outcome of the ambitious research developed by Christina Kubisch and Fabrizio Plessi, originally released in 1976. Two And Two was a collaborative effort towards the merging of visual and sound elements into a new form of intermedia. Influenced by the aesthetics of Fluxus, the duo produced a highly complex and articulated performance, involving two camera operators and several video screens, as well as a variety of objects and unconventional instruments - such as an electric vibrator, a Swanee whistle, a ventilator, an electronic metronome, and a water jet on a steel drum. The result is structured into four parts, inspired by the natural elements, in which single instruments lose their different sonic characteristics, becoming inseparable parts of a unique visual/acoustic process. Presented here on 180 gram vinyl.

GOLDMAN, VIVIEN Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982) LP
2017 repress; LP version. There's a myth about music critics according to which they are frustrated wannabe performers. Evidence to the contrary: Vivien Goldman. The London-born, New York-based Goldman is one of the foremost chroniclers of the perfect storm of reggae, punk, hip hop, and Afrobeat, but between 1979 and 1982, she was also a working musician, creating songs that, years later, would be sampled by The Roots and Madlib. These rare girl grooves are now collected for the first time on Resolutionary, covering Goldman's first three musical formations; first as a member of experimental British new wavers The Flying Lizards, next as a solo artist with her single "Launderette" featuring post-punk luminaries, and then as half of the Parisian duo Chantage with Afro-Parisian chanteuse Eve Blouin. Goldman's eclectic musical crew included PiL's John Lydon, Keith Levene, and Bruce Smith; avant-gardists Steve Beresford and David Toop; The Raincoats' Vicky Aspinall; the mighty Robert Wyatt; Zaire's Jerry Malekani; Manu Dibango's guitarist; Viv Albertine, then of Goldman's good friends The Slits; and dubmaster Adrian Sherwood, who produced the majority of these tracks. Goldman sang in a lilting, clear-toned soprano honed during childhood. She began her singing career in the late '70s, doing backup with Neneh Cherry and Ari Up (The Slits) on Sherwood records by reggae artists including Prince Far I. Goldman was grooving to the innovations of dub. The contrast between Goldman's high, lilting tones and the deep rumble of the bass is a hallmark of all her work, giving a haunting frisson of sex and alienation to songs like The Flying Lizards' "The Window." Reggae had been her London soundtrack, but after moving to Paris in the early '80s, she absorbed music from Africa, an interplay audible in exultant Chantage tracks like "It's Only Money," a mix of steelpan, African soukous guitar, and sobbing Romani violin riding ferocious funk. As the 1990s began, Goldman moved to Manhattan and became New York University's "Punk Professor," teaching original courses on punk, Bob Marley, David Bowie, and Fela Kuti. But she never stopped singing and writing songs. Chicks on Speed released a later cut, "7 Days," on their 2006 Girl Monster compilation (COSR 033CD). Her house 12" records with artists including Berlin's Moritz von Oswald are compiled on LPs. Goldman has also co-written tracks with Massive Attack, Coldcut, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Luscious Jackson. Early in 2016, she performed dub readings onstage with Boston's Berklee Marley Ensemble. Her multimedia beat goes on.

FAY Deal LP
Forging an idiosyncratic musical language, told through exotic rhythms and adventurous wordless vocal explorations, Deal is Fay's boldest work yet, moving further away from the pop signifiers of previous exploits. With an articulate minimalism, Deal flexes and shapes these elements to their maximum potential through vast spatial movements that evolve down unexpected paths. Compositional directions diverge through variations on a theme. The album's complex choral arrangements and daring structural ideas demonstrate a deft understanding of music foundation while departing into abstract possibilities outside of these standards. A conversational interplay between drum and voice is at the center, highlighting the human element. A loose, primal urgency guides these compelling and playful electronic compositions that favor intuitive sense perceptions over self-expression. The voice acts as a beacon throughout the record, leading the rhythms and arrangements towards their next move. Deal is music for movement, an active listening experience that feels narrative or visual, building tension and anticipation of where the piece will lead, and what will happen next. The album uses sparseness to its strength, with each note and drum hit sounding more potent and unexpected. Here you'll find soul, exhilaration, guts, humor, freedom, play, human's animalistic nature. With a willingness to embrace the potential for new music, Deal is a brave and different record that will reward listeners.

VA Dreamy Harbor CD
Excerpt from the liner notes for Dreamy Harbor, by Rob Sharp: "When Tresor founder Dimitri Hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in East Berlin on March 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of Berlin's most influential and enduring techno clubs. 'We didn't know what would happen ten months later,' he says. 'We signed a lease for a year. Which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months...' As Tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno - economic neglect and broken industry - were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression. Today, though the boom and bust of globalized capitalism has filled the void that followed the Berlin Wall, and techno has become a worldwide industry, we face a new political chapter, one defined by populism, nationalism and mistrust. Contemporary creatives should take inspiration from Tresor's story, an extraordinary experiment born from improvisation, resourcefulness and social neglect that uplifted the spirits of inner city communities for a quarter-century. This record marks the spirit of those 25 years of creativity, a paean to the psychedelic music of Dimitri's youth. From the signature magnetic soundscapes of Vainqueur to the dark textures of upcoming Beijing producer Shao; from Jon Hassell's slow epicurean volutes, to the ritual auras of Marcelus and Claudia Anderson's contributions; from the dub-infused pioneering programming of Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald, to Mønic's enthralling cadences, it represents some of the old and new names that continually epitomize Tresor's perennial spirit of ingenuity. 'We were space pioneers,' says Dimitri... Berlin is Europe's economic engine, headquarters to global industry and sole traders alike, where Polish, Kurdish and English are as likely to be spoken as German. That range of influences is felt in all areas of life, not least in the city's music." CD version features: Shao, Terrence Dixon, Juan Atkins & Moritz von Oswald, Mønic, TV Victor, Donato Dozzy, Claudia Anderson, Jon Hassell, Marcelus, and Daughter Produkt.

Berlin's True Romance is back on the disco train for their fifteenth release. Label boss Tensnake is at the wheel this time with two irresistible tracks. First in line is the sci-fi infused "Machines", a catchy slow analog burner with deep synthetic bass lines, etheric melodies and floating French vocals - the perfect soundtrack to blissfully cruise the foggy, neon-drenched nights of a dystopian future. "Black As Flies" slings the listener back under the blazing sun. Starting with sultry vocals and a stripped down disco-not-disco vibe, the track morphs into a unique blend of Italo-Zouk madness.

FUNKE, SASCHA IFA 12"
Berlin's Sascha Funke weighs in with a hard-hitting new four-tracker for Tiga's label. "IFA" sounds like the kind of peak-time party power you'd expect in the darker hours of the deepest sets - basic, visceral limb pumping with full disorientation and actual mind-losing. "Robur" rolls out of that space with minimalistic-tribalism, sounding like a mental apocalyptic march. "MZ" opens up with a chord progression that blooms into ecstatic, piano-house - think "oldschool baby', revisited with bittersweet self-awareness. "Barkas" recalls the tones and timbres from In Relationen (2016), reflecting an emotionally placid state - a sound of radiant clarity.

WOE A Spell For The Death Of Man LP
Vendetta Records present a reissue of Woe's A Spell For The Death Of Man, originally released in 2008. Your Last Rites's review of A Spell For The Death Of Man upon its initial release: "Thrusting mightly, like a craggy Nightside Eclipse encrusted in crumbling punk nihilism, this album rarely relents. As the work of a single man, A Spell For The Death Of Man is a nearly-obsessive vision of destruction (as well as its cathartic wake), but is devoid of theatrics and posturing. Xos' screams of vitriol fully embrace the human/animal primalism that condemns our very existence, and his command of the riff is as organic as it is supreme. The ballsy, black-punk sneer that climaxes 'Longing Is All That Will Remain' again spews nothing but honesty, albeit through mouthfuls of strained sinew and shards of bone. The non-stop venom that volcanoes from the core of 'I See No Civilization' is of unmatched potency, instigating volume cranks and neck fractures with ease. Woe takes the 'depressive' tag that has been glued to State-side blackness for the past few years and turns its head on an axis. While the deliberate torture of the closing track, 'Memento Mori' sludges things up (down), it sounds almost anti-climactic when stacked against the rest of this white-hot tome. A Spell For The Death of Man is easily 2008's most criminally over-looked album, and is quite simply the most important black metal release in years -- not by virtue of perfection, but of relevance. A new dawn is upon us. Adjust accordingly."

KA PING, LO Lost Sounds of the Tao: Chinese Masters of the Guqin CD
2017 remastered edition. Discovered on the shelf of the late Teresa Sterne who created the Nonesuch Explorer series, Lost Sounds of the Tao was first published in 2001 and now comes back through new cutting-edge restoration software. Lo Ka Ping, guqin. recorded 1970, 1971. The guqin was Confucius' instrument, used by scholars and nobles for self-purification. Lo was a Taoist priest (1896-1980) who lived in the remote lands of the New Territories behind Hong Kong, recorded by a pupil in 1970. These rare archival tapes were assembled after an extensive hunt in Hong Kong, New York, California and Taiwan." From the liner notes: "A tape ready of four traditional pieces (Side I) and four original pieces (Side II) for ch'in, played by an old master who lives in a country home in the New Territories. There emerged a vibrant expressive art, its first impression the forthright spirituality of a Blind Willie Johnson (yes, some scales have the blue note intonation!) who made his Ming Dynasty qin state and moan out visions, as panoramas of ancient brush paintings danced before my eyes, attaining life in sound, all their varied densities in depicting nature now breathing amidst sonic rainbows unleashed through the qin's harmonics. The scratching of the silk strings as one changes the finger positions is referred to as the instrument's respiration. Lo's non-thematic use of the fundamental tones in the beginning of the first piece were akin to a veena beginning a raga, causing one to wonder if this manner had become embedded in his music from the early visits by Indian Buddhists, who had brought their own instruments to China. What so casually endows Lo's playing with profundity and depth is the philosophy behind the music, entering the sound through the Tao rather than displaying the fruits of a learned craft, for he was completely self-taught and thus freed from any burden of tradition. His performances, compared to most other players, brim with vitality and spirit, like found objects emerging forth into independent existences, unlike the imposed rhythmic regularity and extremely slow tempi the works are often given by scholars. Lo was alive until 1980 (age 84).
