APHEX TWIN Richard D. James Album LP
2017 repress; 2012 release. "In a career full of brilliant, groundbreaking music, the Richard D. James Album remains Aphex Twin's drill 'n' bass masterpiece. It was James's fourth and most widely popular full-length to date upon its original 1996 release, and reinvented the artist as a commanding influence on like-minded groups such as Radiohead who were tiring of the guitar / bass / drums format. Moving even further away from his ambient and acid house beginnings, the album matches James's trademark fragile, slow-moving melodies with harsh, quick breakbeats. When it was released, fellow electronic artists such as Orbital and Underworld had just begun to filter moderate amounts of drum 'n' bass in their work, but the Richard D. James Album was more extreme than virtually all jungle at the time. Autobiographical in nature, it employs electronic sounds, pulsating rhythms and non-musical samples to convey the author's feelings on childhood innocence, evidenced in tracks like 'To Cure a Weakling Child,' 'Boy/Girl Song' and 'Cornish Acid' (a nod to his Cornish background and upbringing)."

LAVEY, ANTON SZANDOR The Devil Speaks (& Plays) LP
Known to the world as the founder of the Church of Satan and author, among other cult esoteric texts, of the Satanic Bible (1969), Anton Szandor LaVey was also a skilled musician with a taste for weird, creepy and old-timey sounding tunes. Presented in this compilation are six of his best recordings and the first ever recording of a satanic mass conducted by the very high priest himself in 1968. A compendium of the words and music of one of the most singular and demonized (and rightfully so) characters pop-culture has ever seen. Let yourself go with the suave and eerie sounds of the satanic empire and hail the dark lord! Edition of 300.

QINAWI, METQAL Metqal Qinawi LP
Metq?l Quen?w?, born in 1929 (Luxor, Egypt), also known as Met'qal, Metaqal Kinawi Metaqal, Metaqal Rebab Ensemble, Metkaal Kenawe or Awlad Metq?l, developed an intense artistic career based on rescuing folk traditions from southern Egypt. Recovering the traditions of the Said, the southern region around Luxor, Qena, and Asyut, Metq?l was brought up on the customs of the Fellahin (agricultural laborers who passed on the age-old traditions of Egypt), which were disseminated across the nation by the rebab, an instrument of Bedouin origin, a type of violin, made out of coconut shell, wood, animal skin, with two or three strings and played with a horse hair bow. The themes he evokes are pastoral and rural visions and love, and his compositions, written from the age of nine onwards, were received with enthusiasm, enabling him to move to Cairo where he was met with great success and was in constant demand to play at celebrations, such as weddings. His many recordings, disseminated and rescued in the '70s and '80s on multiple cassettes, made Metq?l into a key reference in Egyptian music and took him to perform in Paris, where he was not only celebrated by the Egyptian community, but also acclaimed by the cultural press. His work is as prolific as the number of offspring he had - he had 25 children from nine different marriages. Now, Akenaton presents this legend to the west, leaving the spirit of the Said ready for listeners to swing their hips on the dancefloor. Edition of 500.

BUSINESS, THE Keep The Faith LP
Beat Generation present a reissue of The Business's Keep The Faith, originally released in 1994. The Business were formed in South London when the '70s were ending. Together with bands such as Angelic Upstairs, Blitz or 4 Skins, they helped to redefine the punk sound that the seminal bands had created. With more aggressive lyrics and music, influenced by the first American hardcore bands, they become the second wave of punk with more anger than their predecessors. In the '80s they were active and also split up multiple times until 1994 when the band recorded Keep The Faith. 13 hymns of street punk with lyrics about football, alcohol, drunken nights out and others dedicated to Maradona or Kurt Cobain. So put your boots on, open a big beer bottle and sing along with The Business. Official reissue on 180 gram vinyl. Replica from cover and insert. Edition of 500.

SUE, SELAH Selah Sue LP
2017 repress. Selah Sue is a young Belgian musician and songwriter who ignores her fate, and pours her anxieties into her songs and her guitar. She turns her doubts into soul, funk and reggae melodies, trying hard to be worthy of her idols, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Bob Marley. After posting home recordings of her tracks on Myspace, thousands of fans responded and she attracted the attention of Because Music. This debut album features guest appearances from Meshell Ndegeocello and Cee-Lo Green. This ambitious debut is a smart melting pot of electric rock, organic hip-hop and soul-funk, shifting from poignant ballads to wilder styles. Like Janelle Monae, M.I.A. or Aloe Blacc, Selah Sue belongs to a new generation for whom music has no boundaries. Produced by Farhot (Nneka) and Patrice. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE Godbear LP
Limited repress. "The first vinyl release of Charlemagne Palestine's Godbear, a 1987 solo piano recording originally scheduled to sit alongside Sonic Youth and Swans in the catalogue of Glenn Branca's Neutral Records but eventually released on CD by the Dutch Barooni label in 1998. Although Palestine has worked in an enormous variety of media, his long form performances for solo piano are perhaps his most acclaimed works. Palestine immersed himself in the study of overtones throughout the 1960s, working first with carillons and then with electronic synthesis, searching for the 'golden sound'. Beginning in the early 1970s he continued his exploration of the complexities hidden within seemingly simple tones and intervals on the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, the 'Rolls Royce' of pianos. With the piano's sustain pedal constantly depressed, Palestine hammers out rapidly repeated notes, allowing a complex cloud of overtones to rise above the percussive texture of the struck keys. Initially working with simple intervals such as octaves and fifths, Palestine gradually expanded the harmonic range of his piano performances over the years, while still retaining their ecstatically single-minded nature. Revisiting his signature piano style in 1987 after several years focusing on visual art, Godbear presents three distinct variations that demonstrate the development of his piano music after the classic recordings of the early 1970s. Occupying the entire first side, 'The Lower Depths' stages a slow descent from the piano's mid-range to the Bösendorfer's cavernous additional low octave, building into a thundering swarm of booming overtones. Breaking entirely with the stereotype of clinical minimalism, Palestine's journey to the depths embraces passages of darkly romantic melody before slowly ascending to its starting point. The version of 'Strumming Music' performed here condenses the developmental arc of the piece into eleven minutes, fanning out from a single octave to a complex harmonic wash that calls to mind Palestine's enthusiasm for Debussy and Ravel. 'Timbral Assault' is like an evil twin of 'Strumming Music,' transforming its insistency and harmonic complexity into aggressive intensity and creeping dissonance, foreshadowing Palestine's later collaborations with Christoph Heemann. A classic release, and one that, because of the variety of approaches surveyed within, serves as an ideal introduction to Palestine's ecstatic and mysterious sound world" --Francis Plagne. Remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve designed by Stephen O'Malley.

LA FEMME Psycho Tropical Berlin 2LP
2017 repress. French indie-rock band La Femme is a conundrum -- an episodic band with various faces. La Femme was born during the X years in Biarritz, France, when Sasha and Marlon started composing music on their guitars and recording it onto Garage Band. Together they ride surfboards, pianos and synthesizers as they explore various styles from '60s yé-yé French pop to California surf music. Marlon moved to Paris, and there he met Sam, who played bass. Together, they formed SOS Mademoiselle along with Olivier Peynot, and played vintage French rock, as Sasha was practicing his scales in reverb surf band Les Redoutables. Sasha then joined his friends in Paris, where they discovered French cold wave and synth pop, Marie et les Garçons being one of their favorites. They polished a style that could be described as one of the following: surf-wave, bizarre-wave, strange-wave, weird-witch-wave, silly mental-wave or psycho-tropical Berlin. Joined in 2010 by drummer Noé and female singer Clémence. La Femme formed its first live roster in a few days and took shape that same year with its first anthem, "Sur la planche," a song that was made to be hummed and whistled while riding a surfboard. Later on, La Femme released their second EP, Paris 2012. Soon joined by fancy rhythm drummer Nunez Ritter von Merguez aka La Sauterelle and singer Clara Luciani, as well as a whole roster of female singers, they now present their debut album Psycho Tropical Berlin where rock, pop, rococo Bauhaus, as well as influences from Kraftwerk and Elli & Jacno conjoin just to please you. CANNIBALE No Mercy For Love LP
LP version. Still unknown in rock territory, French band Cannibale gets its name from its "kind of exotic garage" music whose humid tropical groove is slowly eating up all the stereotypes about Born Bad Records releases. If there's cannibalism to be found in No Mercy For Love, it's in reference to the Caribbean rhythms here-and-there, and to the psychedelic sound from the backwoods that make this first album a peculiar occurrence in the land of strikes and wine drinkers. There's never any silence with Cannibale and, as for the lambs, stick to the village in the middle of nowhere where the band members reside - a hamlet in Normandy with a total population of 300, including the cows. Rather than human flesh, these guys have been feeding on their own impatience. Lead guitarist Manuel and singer Nicolas met in junior high (which is the case for 99% of rock bands so far), but the members of Cannibale have a Frustration type profile - almost all of them are over forty. During the last twenty years, with unbending faith, these guys played in loads of bands that never made it to the top (Amib, De Rien, 7Questions, Kouyaté Neerman, Renza Bo, Blast) and even ended up playing as session musicians alongside Camile Bazbaz or Johnny Halliday. After winning the Inrocks Labs contest with Bow Low, their penultimate band, and releasing two albums with Because, the Norman guys finally decided to create Cannibale in 2016. In theory, considering the beginning of their career, or lack thereof, you couldn't imagine you'd end up hearing the sounds from No Mercy For Love: a surprising mixture of cumbia, African rhythms and garage music. Or, if you will, a kind of missing link between Fela Kuti, The Doors, and The Seeds. A bunch of forty year-olds whose origins are as white as their soul is black. "Releasing the album in our forties, we think it's a laugh. Of course we keep on believing, it's all we do, it's what's keeping us alive."

BROTZMANN/VAN HOVE/BENNINK PLUS ALBERT MANGELSDORFF Elements LP
Peter Brötzmann: tenor saxophone; Fred Van Hove: piano; Han Bennink: drums, voice; Albert Mangelsdorff: trombone. Recorded during the Free Music Market, August 27 and 28, 1971, in Berlin. Designed by Peter Brötzmann. Part of the legendary "Berlin Trilogy" originally released by FMP in 1971 (FMP 0030). 180-gram vinyl. One-time pressing of 500. First standalone reissue."What reveals itself in the über energetics on display here is the ability of one quartet to take so much for granted and yet express so much in the process. Van Hove, for instance, shuns all conventions in his approach to the piano: he quotes Liszt and Schubert as well as Ellington and Peterson then wipes all of them out with his elbows as if erasing a chalkboard. His 'Florence Nightingale' is a perfect example. Texturally, he creates diversions from the fury while never disengaging from it. Brötzmann and Mangelsdorff are out and out challenging each other to see who can destroy their instruments first, and Han Bennick is the most proactive percussionist in jazz history. His use of anything and everything while simultaneously playing a trap kit that creates time is astonishing. Elsewhere, on Brötzmann's 'Elements,' African percussion and slow, long opened tonal drones by Mangelsdorff create a backdrop for the other two to explore without rushing in. Brötzmann enters almost tenderly, looking for a room to exit out of, but engaging himself in the microtonalities created by the rhythm section. Van Hove's long augmented chords create a mode for not opening but splintering that exit and Brötzmann ushers the band through in a hurry heading for the outer reaches of the possible. . . . one of the best documents of the period on any continent." --Thom Jurek, AllMusic, 1991

BROTZMANN/VAN HOVE/BENNINK PLUS ALBERT MANGELSDORFF Couscouss de la Mauresque LP
Peter Brötzmann: tenor saxophone; Fred Van Hove: piano; Han Bennink: drums, voice; Albert Mangelsdorff: trombone. Recorded during the Free Music Market, August 27 and 28, 1971, in Berlin. Designed by Peter Brötzmann. Part of the legendary "Berlin Trilogy" originally released by FMP in 1971 (FMP 0040). 180-gram vinyl. One-time pressing of 500. First standalone reissue."Brötzmann's regular trio was joined by the trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff, one of the most respected German jazz musicians, who has managed to keep abreast of musical developments for more than a decade. Those who remember him only for those fine early-sixties albums (like Tension, on German CBS) will be in for a shock, because he's updated his playing all the way. On 'Couscouss De La Mauresque', for instance, his tonal distortions rival those of Paul Rutherford, as he backs Brötzmann's wailing with a rip-snorting obligato. He has the advantage of being a virtuous technician, so that some of his wilder flights are truly breathtaking. . . . Mangelsdorff's technique doesn't hinder his fire, either, and he's well able to stand up to the rest of this very hairy band. Van Hove and Bennink obviously know each other inside out by now, and you'll hear few more exciting passages of music than their interlude during the trombonist's solo on 'Couscouss'. Bennink is getting further into textures every day, and on this album makes great play with his steel-drum and many unidentifiable implements, thus giving the music a great deal of variety. If you wanted to buy just one of these records, it would be very hard to choose because the level is so high throughout." --Richard Williams, Melody Maker, February 5, 1972

BROTZMANN/VAN HOVE/BENNINK PLUS ALBERT MANGELSDORFF The End LP
Peter Brötzmann: tenor saxophone; Fred Van Hove: piano; Han Bennink: drums, voice; Albert Mangelsdorff: trombone. Recorded during the Free Music Market, August 27 and 28, 1971, in Berlin. Designed by Peter Brötzmann. Part of the legendary "Berlin Trilogy" originally released by FMP in 1971 (FMP 0050). 180-gram vinyl. One-time pressing of 500. First standalone reissue."The great thing about this trilogy/set is how naturally everything flows. . . . each subdividing of the group, each solo excursion, feels smooth and logical, as though the player(s) in question had nodded to the others as if to say 'Gimme a minute here, I've got an idea,' and received assent in response. There's all the ferocity any free jazz diehard could ask for, but it never goes on so long that it becomes schtick, and it's always countered by passages that are genuinely beautiful in the most conventional, you-could-play-this-for-your-mom sense. Even without Mangelsdorff, Brötzmann, Van Hove and Bennink were a remarkably empathetic and attuned team, and when he joined them (and these records document their second and third times playing together, ever), everyone's game was raised." --Phil Freeman, Burning Ambulance, 2013

KARIJORD, REBEKKA Mother Tongue LP
LP version. Largely written following the traumatic arrival, three months early, of her first baby, Rebekka Karijord's Mother Tongue is comprised of eleven extraordinary songs tracking her experience with uncommon honesty and unshrinking courage. Like a collection of short stories, Mother Tongue chronicles the events surrounding her pregnancy and the agony of nearly losing her daughter, but it's much more than an album about childbirth. Mother Tongue is about instinct, about belonging, and about finding one's own emotional language. "I never know what my records are about until they're almost done," Karijord admits in a typical display of candor. "It´s like a subconscious collecting process, shooting arrows into the dark and then getting out there to see where they have landed. This time, however, it was a bit different." The album was recorded in Hawaii, Stockholm, and Oslo during 2015-2016, and produced, arranged, and edited by Karijord with help from Elias Krantz as technician, co-producer and mixer. Other contributors include Mariam Wallentin (Wildbirds & Peacedrums), Linnea Olsson, and Nina Kinert (vocals), Jacob Snavely (bass and electronics), Christopher Cantillo (drums), Joe Williamson (upright bass), and regular contributor Anders Scherp (drums & tuned percussion).

ASHBY, DOROTHY Soft Winds / The Swinging Harp Of Dorothy Ashby LP
Doxy present a reissue of Dorothy Ashby's Soft Winds / The Swinging Harp Of Dorothy Ashby, originally released in 1961. From the original liner notes: "Dorothy Ashby may not be the first jazz harpist (Caspar Reardon) or the first female jazz harpist (Adele Girard), but her good feeling for time and ability to construct melodic, guitar-like lines, mark her as the most accomplished modern jazz harpist (...) Accompanying her was another Detroit girl, Terry Pollard. Terry's main instrument is the piano and she is one of the best in the country, bar none. She is also a pretty fair country vibraharpist and in this set, Miss Pollard plays vibes exclusively. With them is still another Detroiter, Herman Wright, who like Miss Pollard has worked with Terry Gibbs and Yusef Lateef, and who also served as Miss Ashby's regular bassist. (...) Completing the quartet is Jimmy Cobb, drummer for the Miles Davis group. During the proceedings, Cobb travels between brushes and sticks without upsetting the equilibrium of this essentially quiet set. There is wide range of material presented here, from blues like Benny Goodman's title number, 'Soft Winds', and Miss Ashby's 'With Strings Attached', to movie themes such as 'Laura', 'Wild Is the Wind', and 'The Guns Of Navarone'. Then there are works by such superior writers of standards as Kurt Weill ('My Ship'); Gershwin ('The Man I Love' and 'Love Is Here To Stay')" Edition of 500.

HOLIDAY, BILLIE Billie's Best 2LP
Doxy present a reissue of Billie's Best, a selection drawn from Billie Holiday's recordings of the mid-1950s, originally released in 1992. Holiday's voice possessed a unique presence, a sound that seems lit up by a resilient vitality. Producer Norman Granz set Holiday among the small jazz combos that suited her talents best, groups that included some of the finest soloists of her generation, such as trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonists Benny Carter and Ben Webster. Granz also supplied ideal rhythm sections, with pianist Jimmy Rowles and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel making appearances here. There's more room to stretch out than was available on the early Columbia and Commodore recordings, and the results are relaxed and profound treatments of some great songs.

LEDRUT, JEAN The Trial LP
Doxy present a reissue of Jean Ledrut's soundtrack for The Trial, originally released in 1962. In 1962, Orson Welles brought what he called his greatest film, The Trial, to the big screen. Filmed in a beautiful black and white, written by Welles and with the incredible performance of Anthony Perkins, Romy Schneider, and Jeanne Moreau. The Trial captures very well the Kafkaesque feeling of the novel. The film is a paranoid nightmare, interrupted here and there by moments of typical Welles humor. One of the elements that contributes to the atmosphere of the film is the soundtrack of Jean Ledrut that makes use of both original atmospheric parts and adaptations from Tomaso Albinoni (Adagio in G minor). There are also some jazzy tracks (played by the great jazz pianist as well as composer Martial Solal) that fit beautifully. Edition of 500.

VA Off The Shelf CD
2002 release. Far Out Recordings celebrate ten years in the business with Off The Shelf, a collection of classic, deleted and rare tracks from the 12" vaults of Far Out Recordings and sister label Solaria. Off The Shelf kicks off with the sublime "Khameleon" from Difusion (aka DJ Venom) who also contributes the flute-driven broken beat cut "Second Future" and is a man held in high regard by the likes of LTJ Bukem and Peter Kruder. The classic Big Bang swinging jazz tune "Colours" was massive with Gilles Peterson alongside Da Lata's highly-sought after "Ponteio". Flytronix's unreleased jazz-shuffler "Elevator" gets a debut airing whilst 4 Hero drop their massive summer 2000 hit "Smile" under their Natures Plan guise. Mark Pritchard pops up twice, once under his Troubleman alias with his now deleted Afro-assault "Strike Hard", and later under his own name with his seminal jazz-tech-step remix of Azymuth's "Carambola". One of the original Brazilian drum n' bass cuts from 1996 - Roni Size's legendary remix of Azymuth's "Faca Del Conte" - also gets a welcome rewind. Far Out Recordings was created in 1992 by renowned Brazilian music aficionado Joe Davis. Since then it has released classic albums from established Brazilian artists such as Joyce and Marcos Valle as well as killer 12"s from contemporary global talent such as 4 Hero, Da Lata and Big Bang. Joe explains the ethos of Far Out: "We wanted to create a sound for both Brazilians and club goers from all corners of the globe. We aren't really interested in keeping the sound underground, we want it to be accessible and immediate for a mass appeal without trying to make pop or commercial music." In 10 years Joe Davis has gone from hunting treasures in dusty old record stores across Brazil, to running a successful record label dedicated to all angles of Brazilian music, from jazz, to electronica. Solaria records was born in 1998 as a label dedicated to independent electronic music aimed at the dancefloor - future disco music and jazz inspired electronica. Also features: Democustico, Salidor and Banzo.

JOYCE & BANDA MALUCA Just A Little Bit Crazy CD
2003 release. Far Out Recordings present Just A Little Bit Crazy from legendary Brazilian singer, composer and guitarist Joyce. A fusion of bossa nova, samba, rare Brazilian rhythms and European jazz (courtesy of guest Scandinavian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft), Just A Little Bit Crazy sees Joyce once again pushing both herself and Brazilian music to its limits. During the 1960s, Joyce, alongside the tropicalists, infused conservative Brazilian music with the spirit of '60s counter-culture, creating bossa nova with a feminist edge that gave Brazilian women the voice they had longed for. Jumping to 2004, Joyce wants to make music that's "gender-free". Now focused on widening her musical influences rather than tackling gender issues, Just A Little Bit Crazy is Joyce's most experimental album to date. Joyce explains the vibe: "I wanted to try something different, different grooves, different subjects, and different sounds. I spoke as a woman for more than three decades - now I want to be more involved in the musical aspects of my craft and rather than write about my own feelings talk about the world around me. I also wanted to have the band interacting all the time, to create an album of real live, organic music." Alongside Joyce and Bugge Wesseltoft are: Tutty Moreno (drums), Robertinho Silva (percussion), Teco Cardoso (flutes, sax), Nailor Proveta (clarinet, sax) and producer Rodolfo Stroeter (bass). The classic sambas and bossa novas that Joyce is known for are present, but with the Banda Maluca in tow, Joyce is at her most innovative and playful adding wonderful new twists to her classic style. "Of course, samba is a must in my music, but on this album I also wanted to incorporate other less well known Brazilian styles, for example, 'Chuvisco' is based on a 'xote', a rhythm from the northeast, and 'For Hall' is a mix of 'maracatu' and 'forro'; North eastern Brazilian dances."

TROUBLEMAN The First Phase CD
2005 release. Far Out Recordings present The First Phase by Troubleman aka Mark Pritchard. A collection of new exclusives, hard-to-find remixes and early tracks, The First Phase shows the development of Mark's inimitable Troubleman style. It's not hard to see why his effortless blend of hip-hop, funk, soul, drum 'n' bass, electro, easy listening, reggae and Detroit techno has won him fans as diverse as Kenny Dope, Carl Craig, Jazzy Jeff, Seiji, Zed Bias and Gilles Peterson. The First Phase gathers together four new exclusive tracks produced by Mark since Time Out Of Mind was released (FARO 085CD, 2004), plus six formative, early Troubleman cuts and Mark Pritchard remixes, previously only ever released on limited 12" runs, now available here for the first time together on CD. Originally intended to be opposite sides of a funk-reggae 7", "The First Phase" and "Intergalactic You, Intergalactic Me" show Mark's love for all things dub. Detroit techno has always been an influence for Mark and is apparent on the next exclusive, the full on motor city banger "The Switch". The final exclusive cut is "The Otherness", a slice of deep twisted breaks with a Global Communications vibe. The Troubleman project was born sometime around '98, following the two now legendary remixes Mark completed of Azymuth tracks for Far Out Recordings: "Carambola" (1998) and "Pieces Of Ipanema" (1999), both of which are featured here. These, alongside his remix of Stereo's "Stereo People" were formative in encapsulating the Troubleman dancefloor sound that is loved by both house and broken beat heads. Despite being five years old these mixes still rough the dancefloor as well as any current big tune. Alongside Tom Middleton, Mark was the other half of Global Communication and The Jedi Knights and fans of those seminal '90s electronic acts will be delighted by "The Messenger" where Mark incorporates Detroit techno sounds and textures with electro breaks and two-step rumblings, and "Lullaby" which sounds like the "Godfather" James Brown getting down in Detroit.

ADOLFO, BRAZIL & BRAZUKA, ANTONIO Destiny CD
2007 release. Far Out Recordings keep the '70s vibes flowing with Destiny, the new CD from legendary Brazilian composer Antonio Adolfo. Fans of classic female bossa nova in the vein of Sergio Mendes and Quarteto Em Cy will go crazy for Destiny as it features the dulcet tones of not one, but, two girls from Ipanema, Antonio's daughters Carol and Luisa. Their crystal-clear, tone-perfect voices float perfectly over Antonio's late '60s and '70s inspired Brazilian grooves that combine influences from jazz, classic Brazilian '60s pop, Tropicalia, easy-scoring and funk. In the late '60s and '70s, Antonio was known as the master of funky-Brazilian breaks and beats. Destiny is filled to the brim with choppy wah-wah guitars and slick bossa breaks that the Beastie Boys would give their right arms for. When you learn the pedigree of the musicians involved this should come as no surprise: from the mighty Azymuth comes drummer Ivan Conti and bassist Alex Malheiros, from Grupo Batuque the percussive powerhouse Dom Chacal and Ze Carlos are present and even the one-and-only Arthur Verocai is here with a wonderful string arrangement. Adolfo is probably best known outside of Brazil for his work as Antonio Adolfo & Brazuca, under which name he delivered a series of sought-after albums at the end of the 1960s and the start of the 1970s. In the stakes of Brazilian music, Antonio's sound and style is up there with Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle. Destiny is the anticipated follow up to Ao Vivo Live (2007), a CD Antonio Adolfo recorded with his daughter Carol Saboya, and which was voted "Best Brazilian CD of 2007, recorded and released in the United States", by the Brazilian International Press Association. Antonio talks about Destiny: "Everything was recorded with myself playing a Fender Rhodes piano and I am proud to say that the two female voices are my daughters Luisa and Carol, who sing as if one, with the timbre of Carioca girls. I am so pleased to record this album now in the 21st century with the wonderful studio technology we now have. I always believed it was my 'destiny' to record this album."

MALHEIROS, SABRINA New Morning CD
2008 release. Following her best-selling debut album Equilibria (2005), singer-songwriter Sabrina Malheiros returns with New Morning, an album of 21st century bossa-soul that mixes bossa, samba, disco and house together to create a sophisticated and sublime album. New Morning is what Sabrina Malheiros describes as a "more organic" follow up to the critically acclaimed Equilibria. Armed with a strong caliber of musicians, Sabrina Malheiros embarked on a rite of passage that resulted in an album that can only be described as a masterpiece. Sabrina Malheiros is a highly accomplished young musician who has a musical heritage that is deeply rooted in Brazilian musical history. As the daughter of Alex Malheiros, the bassist from the legendary Azymuth, Sabrina is clearly under no illusion as to the influence this had in her musical journey. New Morning features an all-star Brazilian team including: Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti, Zé Carlos, Idriss Boudrioua and Paulinho Braga as well as legendary Brazilian arranger and composer Arthur Verocai. The album was produced by Daniel Maunick, who also produced Sabrina's previous album, yet the production on this album shows Maunick's evolution into a highly versatile and skillful producer. With '70s inspired sweeping samba-soul songs nestled in between boogie-tinged jazz, house rhythms and funky cinematic-bossa breaks and featuring the unmistakable vocals of Sabrina, New Morning sees Rio's original nu-bossa star recreate the honesty of her debut but with a new sense of maturity and sophistication. The album erupts with the bubbling bossa samba hybrid "Brisa Mar" with lyrics co-written by her father Alex Malheiros which were inspired by the sea. This track alongside "Sintonia" reflects the powerful partnership of Sabrina's writing abilities combined with the grand string arrangements of the renowned Arthur Verocai resulting in songs that would sit comfortably in any classic film score. "Connexão" is an offering of cool, sexy rhythmic house featuring the prominent afro-samba guitar playing of Ze Carlos evoking the swing of Jorge Ben. This song defines how well the partnership between the duo works in unison to make an innovative sound and also acts as a nod to the electronic touches of her previous album, Equilibria. "It's Too Late" is a great bossa nova rendition of the Carol King classic. New Morning, as the name suggests, acts as fresh beginning for Sabrina. Classic Brazilian songwriting combined with the contemporary production.

An Italian-Spanish connection is always a good thing. The sort of sensual and Mediterranean emotions that Carlo and Black Loops can deliver, is a skill that has been taken far on this new EP. The dichotomy can prove difficult to square sometimes, particularly when the guys have different paths in their sound. But the mix is rich here. The Intermission EP is a packed full of soul samples, warm pads, and great solid beats wrapped up as a soulful declaration. Their massive love for music really shines through on this EP.

Since 2007, the band have released three full-length albums, coupled with split releases with bands such as White Hills, Naam, and Farflung, and finally 2013's highly acclaimed Holy Moon EP (HPS 012EP). They have also been regulars on stages across the world having now performed over 300 gigs. CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time LP
2017 repress. Everywhere At The End of Time is the first in a series of six albums by The Caretaker, aka James Leyland Kirby, slowly cataloguing the stages of early onset dementia. Each album will reveal new points of progression, loss and disintegration, progressively falling further and further towards the abyss of complete memory loss and nothingness. Viewing dementia as a series of stages can be a useful way to understand the illness, but it is important to realize that this only provides a rough guide to the progress of the condition. Drawing on a recorded history of 20 years of recollected memories, this is one final journey and study into recreating the progression of dementia through sound. As the first in the series - and despite its typically frayed loop construction, this volume is the most lucid - subsequent instalments will continue to move into faded obscurity and material erosion. Mastered and cut by Andreas Lupo Lubich. Artwork by Ivan Seal.

MONDKOPF They Fall, But You Don't LP
LP version. New from In Paradisum, the home of Low Jack and December, They Fall, But You Don't is the most straight-forward and cohesive Mondkopf album to date due to his switch to analog synthesizers. They Fall was been recorded live in his room in Paris in the sadly memorable month of November 2016. The record has something familiar with Mondkopf's previous output with the raw textures and half-light atmospheres, but the rest is a radical change for him. The synth pads of They Fall are neither retro nor futuristic. In addition to Paul's fragile vocals, they exhale a distinct feeling of just being there. The tracks follow their own path by being focused and vital. They Fall, But You Don't is the singular manifesto of a relationship to electronic music that leaves out the ideas of innovation and genre and more resembles the language of a new folk music; deeply evocative, powerful and free.

ORB, THE COW / Chill Out, World! LP
2017 repress; LP version. 180 gram vinyl. The Orb, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann, have become known for their genre-bending curiosity and surprising sonic detours, exploring experimental soundscapes as well as club-friendly beats. COW / Chill Out, World! is a masterful ambient album that branches out in many directions, but unmistakably sounds like The Orb. In contrast to their much-acclaimed previous full-length Moonbuilding 2703 AD (KOMP 124CD/KOM 330LP, 2015), which took years to prepare and fine-tune, COW / Chill Out, World! was produced over the course of only five sessions in six months, directly following the like-minded Alpine EP (KOM 339EP, 2016). Paterson on recording the album: "It got so spontaneous that a track like '9 Elms Over River Eno (Channel 9)' consisted only of material collected at North Carolina's Moogfest in May - second-hand records from local stores, field recordings, live samples from gigs that we liked, and of course an excursion to the Eno River, which actually exists. This geographic intimacy and the spontaneity are among the top reasons why we love this album so much." Fehlmann sees the duo's relentless gigging schedule as a formative influence on the new album: "the countless performances we've played in the last years have brought us closer as a musical unit. The spice of our concerts is improvisation - a fertile process that we've brought to the studio, where we operate with very simple rules of engagement and go wherever the flow takes us." It's an approach that one might expect from traditional acoustic instrumentation, not necessarily an electronic set-up. Once more, The Orb's trademark playfulness is on full display on COW / Chill Out, World! and it doesn't limit itself to the multi-layered sampling and psychedelic sound composites. It's not so much an obscure trope coming full circle as a perfect example for The Orb's multi-timbre approach to sound and meaning - a compelling, immersive journey to diverse places and impressions. Each track title is a conceptual work in its own right, playing with multiple references, some of which remain highly personal and mysterious. But the greatest feat of The Orb's latest outing might just be how all this semantic doodling never gets in the way of the actual listening, at all times directly relating the artists's sonic vitality and cheerful nosiness.

OPUS ALFA Opus Alfa LP
Little Butterfly Records present the first full reissue of Opus Alfa's self-titled album, originally released by Discos De La Planta in 1972. Opus Alfa was a blues-rock band that was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1970. It developed a new and overly unique presentation where the band experimented with electric blues-rock and other genres, either in the merger with the Río de la Plata's tango or a "baroque" acoustic experience where instrumentals incorporated with violins, flutes, acoustic guitars, and the bandurria. Despite economic constraints and being immersed in an adverse context for avant-garde rock, Opus Alfa were also characterized by a high degree of professionalism and a striking energy for self-promoting their work, making musical appearances in dozens of underground bars, discos, concerts, and festivals throughout the year 1971. This album was recorded in only two days and practically in the first take, which shows the potential of the band. The different tracks combine a harmonious sample of the experiments musical genres with a striking alternation in the instrumentals. This is the first full reissued version (with never-before-seen photos), is truly worth knowing, and does justice to the band's hard work, despite the time elapsed. The strange cover is the original, with two eggs on a black background, a message which for many meant the recognition of a band with a lot of temperament. Comes as 140 gram vinyl; Edition of 200.

DIAS DE BLUES Dias De Blues LP
Little Butterfly Records present a reissue of Dias De Blues' self-titled album, originally released by Discos De La Planta in 1973. Dias De Blues (Montevideo, Uruguay) was formed in 1972 by Jorge Barral (bass), Daniel Bertolone (guitar), and Jorge Graf (drums). They developed a blues and heavy rock proposal that was characterized by virtuosity of the musicians and blunt rhythmic base, mixed with the unusual strength, energy and aggressiveness. With all these elements they performed extensive improvisations. The lyrics that incorporated a plain, direct and politically incorrect language, were sung by Barral and Bertolone with rage and a clearly Uruguayan diction, though with certain John Mayall-style influence. Disenchantment with established society was part of the band's philosophy. For them, the name of the band, Dias De Blues meant "fucked up days", times of crisis, days of economic and cultural alienation, not just a reference to a musical style. BARRAL, JORGE FLACO Chau LP
Little Butterfly Records present Jorge Flaco Barral's lost album Chau. Esteban Leivas talks about the album: "Chau, Flaco's 'lost' album, was an urgent idea that, somehow, Hamlet and I put into his tight list of things to do and unresolved emotions stemming from his sudden decision to go to Europe in 1972. We considered that Jorge 'Flaco' Barral, one of the most charismatic and different artists of the emerging movement of rock, blues and related Montevideano of the early seventies, had to leave a personal, personal legacy, beyond his previous collective works with Opus Alfa and Days Of Blues (Dias De Blues). We knew many of his songs were hidden, except couple of them had appeared publicly in few occasions. Most of the songs show very personal subtlety and lyrical sensitivity that the Flaco had already demonstrated with his previous groups. It was about Flaco recording the songs that he wanted to leave the way he considered to be right. In the end, what remained was a unique document of a different and original artist, an unfinished product that lacked time but what is a reflection of the urgencies we all lived in those days."

ASHLEY, ROBERT Your Money My Life Goodbye CD
1998 release. An opera commissioned by Bayerisher Rundfunk Munich's Hörspiel und Medienkunst department about an internationally renowned swindler, who almost took down the European and American banking system. Featuring the voices of Robert Ashley, Sam Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Jackie Humbert, and Joan La Barbara. Recorded and mixed by Tom Hamilton. Robert Ashley on the piece: "Your Money My Life Goodbye is one of forty-nine vocal-ensemble pieces of various lengths (from ten minutes to ninety minutes or more) that can be used in many kinds of combinations to make an opera for stage, for radio or for television. Any of the combinations go under the title of the 'opera,' The Immortality Songs. When any of the pieces are performed separately, as in Your Money My Life Goodbye for Bayerischer Rundfunk, they take their individual titles. I have finished seven of the compositions. It looks like a lifetime of work. Hence, the title. In all of the forty-nine compositions some aspect of the musical structure (or many aspects of the musical structure) derive directly from the English language of the libretto. This process of derivation can be secretive and arcane (the music based, for instance, on grammatical structures or on the probability of the recurrence of certain syllables) or, as in Your Money My Life Goodbye, open and obvious. I think that the open and obvious approach - in this case, matching the syllables of the English (and the German) to the rhythm of the title-line, and matching the voice choices to the occurrence of the 'characters' in the text - is a good solution to the 'light-hearted' nature of the text. The story is simple. A woman responds to an invitation to attend a high-school reunion by sending her son, because she is incapacitated for some unknown reason. In describing her son, we get the idea that he is a high-level 'intelligence agent' (a spy). A sort of James Bond character. The woman writes that her son's wife will not attend the reunion, because she is recently dead, either from suicide or murder. The son's wife is described in great detail from various newspaper articles. She was an internationally renowned swindler, who almost took down the European and American banking system. She was a successful entrepreneur. Your Money My Life Goodbye doesn't take this seriously at all. Everybody is crazy."

ASHLEY, ROBERT Dust 2CD
2000 release. Dust is an opera by Robert Ashley and Yukihiro Yoshihara (video direction) whose imaginary setting is a street corner anywhere in the world, where those who live on the fringes of society gather to talk, to each other and to themselves, about life-changing events, missed opportunities, memory, loss, and regret. Five "street people" recount the memories and experiences of one of their group, a man who has lost his legs in some unnamed war. As part of the experience of losing his legs, he began a conversation with God, under the influence of the morphine he was given to ease his pain. Now he wishes that the conversation, which was interrupted when the morphine wore off, could be continued so that he could get the "secret word" that would stop all wars and suffering. ASHLEY, ROBERT Celestial Excursions 2CD
2005 release. Following the ground-breaking work, Dust (LCD 1006CD), godfather of experimental opera Robert Ashley returns with Celestial Excursions. Ashley's endeavor explores remarkably uncharted territory -- the kind of language that is common among "old" people who talk all the time or not at all, to anyone passing by or to themselves. The opera premiered at the Hebbel Theater in Berlin, before coming to The Kitchen for its U.S. premiere in April 2003. Celestial Excursions delves into the wild intermingling of reminiscence, regret, love, nightmare, old sayings, and songs on the radio -- all seemingly to no purpose, except for the operatic end of relentless speed and precision in ensemble singing and the possible stage magic inherent in illusion, hallucination, and a physically changed state of the senses. The opera's originality lies in a use of a new vocal technique Ashley has built over the last 20 years, which enables several stories to be heard at the same time. In an intricate vocal system, a principal voice is "chased" by other voices whose parts rotate in sequence in a given order. The result of this technique creates a complex jungle of voices, delivered with an extraordinary rhythmic intensity rarely heard in ensemble singing. As for all of Ashley's latest works, the orchestra music of Celestial Excursions was composed in the computer-synthesizer studio. All the voices and the orchestra (on multi-track tape or on disc) are processed again during the concert in order to match the sound of the opera to the performance space. And for this CD release, Ashley went back to the studio with live recordings to rework the piece, extending the orchestra in the final act. Personnel: Sam Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Jacqueline Humbert, Joan La Barbara, Robert Ashley - singers; Joan Jonas - choreography; Robert Ashley and Tom Hamilton - electronic orchestra; Tom Hamilton - mixing and live electronics; "Blue" Gene Tyranny - piano; David Moodey - lighting design; Cas Boumans - technical coordination/sound system engineer; Melanie Lipka - stage manager. ASHLEY, ROBERT Foreign Experiences CD
2006 release. Foreign Experiences was commissioned by Performing Artservices, Inc. (1993) with funds from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust. The opera was premiered by the Robert Ashley Ensemble at the Festival d'Avignon in 1994. This realization is a duet version by Sam Ashley and Jacqueline Humbert. The pre-recorded voices of the Ashley ensemble are the background chorus. Robert Ashley's Now Eleanor's Idea is a quartet of short operas based on the notion of a sequence of events seen from four, different points of view. At the same time, each opera is an allegory, like Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (1678), for an individual's self-realization within the context of a major religion found in the United States. Improvement takes its imagery and plot from Judaism, Foreign Experiences from Pentecostal Evangelism, eL/Aficionado (LCD 1004CD) from Corporate Mysticism, and Now Eleanor's Idea (LCD 1009CD) from (Spanish) Catholicism. The inspiration for these works came specifically from four sources: the work of the historian, Frances A. Yates (1900-1983), whose specialty of interests included the influence of Kabbalistic mysticism on the birth of modernism and scientific philosophy in Italy in the 16th century (as a result of the expulsion of Jews from Spain during the Inquisition); the writings of Carlos Castaneda (and the arguments about him as a writer and about the intentions of his work); Low Rider Magazine, the fan-cult magazine of the Low Rider movement in the Southwestern United States; and finally, corporate vocabulary, what it sounds like and how it is used in popular publications, like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, or Fortune Magazine.

ASHLEY, ROBERT Now Eleanor's Idea 2CD
2007 release. Now Eleanor's Idea was made possible by grants from The Rockefeller Foundation (1984 and 1993), the National Endowment for the Arts' Opera Musical Theater Program (1985) and InterArts Program (1992). ASHLEY, ROBERT Concrete 2CD
2008 release. Concrete follows from Robert Ashley's preoccupation in two previous operas with the kind of speech that has not been explored in opera -- in Dust (LCD 1006CD), the speech of the homeless; in Celestial Excursions (LCD 1007CD), the speech of people living together in a home for old people. The three operas are not a "trilogy" in any sense, but they all come from this preoccupation with or fascination with special kinds of speech and special kinds of states of mind. "The characters I'm interested in," Ashley explains, "are marginal, because everybody is marginal compared to the stereotypes. I am interested in their profoundly good qualities, and I'm not interested at all in evil. The characters in my work are as bizarre and unreal as the characters in William Faulkner. They just happen to be ordinary people who are spiritually divine." Though in Concrete, it is not made explicit in any way, the libretto might be considered to be the "musings" of an old man alone. He thinks about strange questions and even as the questions are asked they are answered in various forms of sarcasm, indifference, questions about the questions and explanations. In other words, he is talking to himself. The opera takes the form of five "discussions" about matters he wonders about: Why do people keep secrets about themselves? Why do the buildings in the city all line up perfectly (vertically) when the surface of the planet is round? Why is it that so many things that people do as recreation are played counter-clockwise? What has happened to the many women friends ("lovers") he has had and "left behind" and why were they left behind? And, finally, the fact that he has recently seen a "flying carpet" (in his bedroom.) The five "internal" discussions alternate with four reminiscences about people the old man has worked with and loved. The reminiscences are short and detailed biographies of seemingly ordinary people who in the past did extraordinary things -- sometimes criminal, sometimes just brave in an unusual way -- but will never be recognized for what they did. The singers in the opera are not "characters" in any traditional way. They take part in the very fast "discussions" sections as voices in the old man's musings. Then each of the singers is given one of the "biographies" as a solo aria.

LUCIER, ALVIN Music On A Long Thin Wire CD
1992 release. First released on Lovely Music in 1980. A 50-foot length of taut wire passes through the poles of a large magnet and is driven by an oscillator; the vibrations of the wire are miked at either end, amplified, and broadcast in stereo. The thin wire is set vibrating four times at four different frequencies; what results is not the low drone one might expect from a long, vibrating wire, but a complexity of evocative, ethereal chords. Music On A Long Thin Wire is a classic example of Alvin Lucier's investigations into the physics of sound and the sonic properties of natural processes.

TWENTY SIXTY SIX AND THEN Reflections On The Future 2CD
"In May 1972, Twenty Sixty Six And Then met first time and decided to found a band. Day and night they rehearsed and filed on their sound in their residence in Mannheim. Another journalist at that time: 'Dominating in their music is a dynamic, which is regulatory in the developing harmonies in the complex structured arrangements. When the musicians sometimes get lost in old hard rock stereotypes they kept enough distance to the sounds, to prove their intents with detailed inserted alienation.' In a short way: the rediscovery of a Krautrock origin from the 'Mannheim'-rock scene in the early 70ties. Twenty Sixty Six And Then were the singer Geff Harrison (the only member from the UK), Veit Marvos on organ, Steve Robinson played the second organ, Gagey Mrozeck guitar, Dieter Bauer on bass and Konstantin Heinrich Bommarius on drums. The CD contains the bonus tracks, originally released on the rare and strictly limited double-vinyl-edition re-released in 2002."

SHED The Final Experiment 2LP
Double LP version. Under the moniker Shed, René Pawlowitz has published three highly ambitious albums in which he defines his work more and more as his own way of musical narration; The Final Experiment is definitely the temporary highlight of this evolution. It establishes Shed conclusively as one of the most interesting and substantial active electronic music artists. It carries a vibe that links Shed to other boundary breaking artists, such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brian Eno, and Carsten Nicolai. However, Shed has found a way to develop a highly individual way of communicating electronic music that is self-sufficient. The Last Experiment is a mostly homogeneous piece of work, a meditation where the stylistic confusion seems less important than the musical statement that it represents.

LIANG, LEI Luminous CD
"The result of a rich confluence of many different cultural threads, a vivid and open imagination, and a rigorous intellect, Lei Liang's (b. 1972) music has a dimensionality to it that's quite remarkable. Of course acoustic, often luxuriantly so, it somehow also evokes tactility, it sounds like something that could be touched; it evokes shape and color, it sounds like something that could be seen. There are still other layers of significance, especially language and the drama of narrative action, its great sonic variety possibly conjuring character and scene, emotions and ideas different for each performer and listener. Through myriad avenues of potential perception, Liang's music reaches out and embraces its audience, its intricacies and complexities part and parcel of its naturalness and its direct but highly nuanced communicative voice. These five compositions represent further explorations of his long-standing research into traditional Asian arts and music and their incorporation into a contemporary music aesthetic. Verge Quartet (2013) is the latest example of Liang's extensive study of Mongolian music. Trans (2013), written for virtuoso percussionist Steven Schick, incorporates audience participation by having them play more than a hundred pairs of rocks, creating a sonic 'cloud' that can be interpreted as rain or other natural sounds. The moon is following us (2015) (for solo piano) represents the composer's effort to search for a new harmonic language, based on spectral analysis of a Chinese folk song. Liang imagines the composition as a journey through the spectral landscapes hidden within a voice. Inkscape (2014) (for percussion quartet and piano), one of several works in which Liang engages with the idea of Chinese traditional mark-making, either that of calligraphy or painting, is an exploration of the relationship between sound and Chinese ink paintings. In this piece, the piano functions as the 'brush,' and the percussion quartet as the 'ink.' Luminous (2014) is a concerto written specifically for the innovative bass improviser Mark Dresser. The composer writes, 'The instrument's rich spectra embody 'voices' that encompass extreme opposites -- lightness and darkness, angels and ghosts, paradise and inferno -- unified by a singular vibrating body."

BYRON, MICHAEL The Celebration CD
"Michael Byron (b. 1953) has long been committed to writing virtuosic instrumental music of contrapuntal complexity and perpetual variation, but with The Celebration (2013), a song cycle for baritone and piano quintet, he ventured into unfamiliar territory: He had not previously composed for voice, the primary vehicle for articulating the wonder of the human condition. Consisting of four songs (words by Anne Tardos) and two instrumental interludes, The Celebration explores the ambiguity, the disorientation, and ultimately the joyful paradox of formulating an identity in a world of constant change. Like most of Byron's work, the composition is built on a carefully designed structure that ensures the constant and measured transformation of musical elements. Just as Byron creates a new context for Tardos's poetry, so does the presence of the poetic voice transform Byron's music. The instrumental lines, for example, assume an intensely lyrical guise as they anticipate, echo, mirror, and contrast the vocal line. Also, the contrapuntal and rhythmic complexity -- a hallmark of Byron's style -- seems here to have emerged from a fragmented chorale of simple melodies that have been enriched by increasingly rhapsodic ornamentation, all of which has been meticulously notated. The unexpected divergence and convergence of the vocal and instrumental lines produce what Byron calls 'inevitable synchronicities,' that mysterious circumstance of individual voices immersed in eternal dialogue. With The Celebration, Byron and Tardos provide a rich opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the divine counterpoint between voice and instruments, poetry and music, individual and humanity."

"One of Brazil's greatest songwriters, Jorge Ben rarely dwelled on any particular musical style, even the ones he helped create. By the mid 1970s, Ben had already innovated several groundbreaking new twists on the classic samba sound, in the process creating many tunes that became epoch-defining hits for South America's biggest country -- not to mention the world at large. For 1977's Tropical, he made the controversial decision to rework an album's worth of his most beloved songs in the new, disco and funk influenced Afro-Samba style he was exploring at the time. SANDERS, ED Yiddish Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side 10"
2015 release. Yiddish-Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side by Ed Sanders (b. 1939), founder of the mythical Fugs in 1964 and also a writer, publisher, activist, etc., is an epic piece of almost 18 minutes in length, a vocal setting of a dense and reasoned text that runs to eight typed pages, 1400 words, 8500 characters. First issued on cassette in 1991 by the label Hyperaction P.C.C., the piece recalls an almost fifty-year history of Jewish militancy in New York by poetic means - combining historical scholarship, emotion and clarity, the echoes of the past found in the present: of the pogroms and escape from Eastern Europe in the 1880s up to the death of Meyer London, the Socialist member of Congress, in 1926 (not overlooking exile, the crossing of the Atlantic, arrival at Ellis Island, back-breaking work in the sweatshops, the creation of political parties and trade unions, the outbreak of the First World War - the rupture in the narrative caused by this is marked here by the passage from the A-side to the B-side of the record). This is a literary project that is simultaneously ambitious and highly personal and which cannot help but recall America: A History In Verse (nine volumes published between 1998-2008), which has occupied Ed Sanders for almost 15 years and which, over more than 3000 pages, recounts in verse the history - both poetic and political - of the United States. For this recording of Yiddish-Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side, Ed Sanders accompanies himself on a "pulse lyre", a small, finger-operated synthesizer which he invented himself in order to accompany the declamation of his texts in the manner of the acoustic lyre used by the ancient poets (Sanders studied Greek at university). Yiddish-Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side is a text (and a recording) of dual resonance, animated by the fits and starts of history as well as the rhythm of the writing (and reading) of Ed Sanders. This reissue was re-recorded in mono in 2006; Mastered by Harris Newman (Grey Market Mastering, Montréal 2014); Illustrations by Gwénola Carrère; Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

GREENBERGER/GLENN JONES/CHRIS CORSANO, DAVID An Idea In Everything 2x10"
2016 release. When David Greenberger first embarked on what has become a life-long journey, drummer Chris Corsano was not yet five years old! In 1979, after graduating from art school in Boston, Greenberger took the job of activities director at the Duplex Nursing Home, an all-male elder care facility in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and began collecting the stories, poems and music reviews of its aged patients for what became his Duplex Planet project, an undertaking that would eventually encompass nearly 200 issues of a digest-sized magazine, a series of CDs, books, comics, and performance art. Eventually the nursing home closed, but David has remained engaged in what has become the central art form of his life: the "art of conversation." Three decades later, Chris Corsano set in motion the project present here. With guitarist and banjo player Glenn Jones, a longtime friend of both Greenberger and Corsano, the three began recording in Greenberger's living room in upstate New York. In just three days, with no advance preparation, they recorded the 28 tracks that make up An Idea In Everything. Corsano improvised, Jones invented new tunings for his banjo and guitar on the fly, and Greenberger selected and read stories in direct response to the music. Everything was spontaneous and live. Despite the dark and sad feeling of some of the texts (dealing with aging, memory loss, etc.), there is also humor, joy and grit. The resulting is a rollercoaster of emotions, a glittering patchwork of sonic atmospheres and an oral encyclopedia on dozens of subjects. David Greenberger on the release: "When newcomers hear that I have regular conversations and interviews with elderly people, they assume I collect oral history. What that assumption implies is that when one grows old we become solely a repository of our past. From the start, my mission has been to offer a range of characters who are already old, so that we can get to know them as they are in the present, without celebrating or mourning the loss of who they were before." Recorded by Chris Corsano in Greenwich, NY, February 2013; Mixed by Matthew Azevedo and Glenn Jones in Jamaica Plain, MA; Mastered by Matthew Azevedo at Endless Audio, Providence, RI. Illustration by Gwénola Carrère.

BOULANGER & MAAM-LI MERATI, LEONORE La Maison d'Amour 2x10"
2016 release. Léonore Boulanger and Maam-Li Merati met each other in Paris in 2011 at a concert of Azerbaijani master-musician Alim Qasimov and his daughter Ferghana Qasimova. Maam-Li Merati is an Iranian musician that was born in Kermanshah, near the Iraqi border. In addition to having a doctorate in Musicology, he has worked with artists such as Iranian singer Shahram Nazeri and French novelist Luis Bunuel's screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (for a project devoted to 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi). Shortly after their meeting, Maam-Li Merati started to teach the art of Persian classical music to Léonore Boulanger, a young French musician that released three albums on the multi-faceted label Le Saule. During the spring of 2015, they recorded some first lyrical odes, some dastg?hs for two voices, and traditional string instruments that would later become the sides A and C of La Maison d'Amour. Later, Matthieu Ferrandez, church organist and researcher in electronic music, joined the two for sides B and D, weaving a cosmic lace with the sighs of harmonium and acoustic organs. Also features Jean-Daniel Botta on bendir and n'goni. Recorded in 2015 at Studio Abermarle (Bourgogne) by Jean-Daniel Botta; Mixed by Cyril Harrison; Mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering; Illustration by Gwénola Carrère.

Opus 67 Strategygetarts A Symphony, Hommage Á Richard Demarco is a previously unissued recording by Henning Christiansen from 1971. In 1970, the Richard Demarco Gallery in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf organized the exhibition, Strategy: Get Arts. This celebration of art from Düsseldorf was held at the Edinburgh College of Art during the Edinburgh International Festival. The title of the exhibition was a palindrome created by André Thomkins and featured works by Joseph Beuys, Claus Böhmler, George Brecht, Henning Christiansen, Robert Filliou, Dorothy Iannone, Mauricio Kagel, and Dieter Roth amongst others. Opus 67 Strategygetarts A Symphony, Hommage Á Richard Demarco was sent to Richard Demarco as a gift following the exhibition. Having returned to Denmark, Christiansen, along with sound technician Peter Sakse, created Strategygetarts, a sound collage incorporating field recordings from urban spaces, supermarkets, a boxing game, etc. The sole "musical" element is a piano motif which repeatedly punctuates the recordings. The first side moves forwards, the flip back. A reverse groove will set you straight. Opus 67 Strategygetarts A Symphony, Hommage Á Richard Demarco comes in a high-gloss sleeve, featuring two original artworks by Henning Christiansen; Edition of 500.

"If a dividing line could be drawn between the eras of gritty funk and groovy disco, it would probably fall precisely at 1975 -- making this compilation, originally released that year, a perfect snapshot of the moment up-tempo, danceable funk was cleaning itself up for the nightclub. Tracks like Lillian Hale's -erce 'Don't Boom Boom,' Brother Soul's breakbeat classic 'Cookies' and the rare groove nugget 'Bim Sala Bim' by Hudson County all retain the tough edge of the early '70s sound but earned a reputation as crowd favorites in the burgeoning discotheques that would rule the latter half of the decade. This newly expanded edition augments the original tracklist by adding seven compatible tracks, including choice cuts from the Gap Band's early days and stepper's gems from Tasha Thomas and Sound Experience." POREST The Parallel Broadcasts/Radio Between the Lines (and Before the EU) Cassette
Porest unveils original music and recordings from the covert sector of his archives. Culled from shortwave and FM broadcasts, these selections are said to be intercepted via "prepared radio" - one finely tuned to receive what is known in certain circles as parallel broadcasting. Content explores the trauma of emerging global consciousness, acute cultural antipology, and the urgent placement of democratic music today. Recorded in January and February of 2016, with contributions from Paul Staufenbiel (Aavikko) and Michael Darr. Features radio dramas, brutal sound collage, pop music interludes, and a shocking exposé on CIA punk group: Down With Culture. Originally created for Optimized! (on WFMU), which featured three days of programming curated by Vicki Bennett (People Like Us), comprising ten hours of new and exclusive recordings, radio and video by 26 participants. Side B features Porest's early radio archaeological release: Radio Between the Lines (and Before the EU) recorded and assembled 1997-1999. Full-length cassette comes pressed on a baby blue cassette in a full-color sleeve.

KINGSTON ALL-STARS Presenting Kingston All-Stars (Silkscreened) LP
Limited LP version. Comes in a silkscreened sleeve; Edition of 300. Composed of some of the most gifted musicians to ever walk the mean streets of the Jamaican capital, the Kingston All-Stars project is a celebration of the heyday of vintage reggae, taking the form of a contemporary music project that pays homage to the glory days of the music's past. Spearheaded by Canadian producer, engineer, and musician Moss Raxlen, who was also the driving force behind the Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae (2009) feature documentary, the Kingston All-Stars revolve around a robust core of legendary session players. Drumming mastermind Sly Dunbar is of course half of the great rhythm duo, Sly and Robbie; bassist Jackie Jackson joined the Supersonics at the birth of rock steady, was a part of the Beverley's All Stars, and has been a touring member of Toots and the Maytals since the early 1970s. Guitarist Hux Brown was a rhythm player in the All Stars and Toots' band; lead axe man Mikey 'Mao' Chung was in the Now Generation and made an impact in both the Revolutionaries and the Compass Point All Stars. Keyboardist Robbie Lyn was an important session player at Studio One in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and was also part of the In Crowd band. After something of a false start in the mid-60s as a drummer and singer with the Caribbeats, Ansel Collins switched to the keyboards, making an instant splash with "Night Doctor" (one of Sly Dunbar's first recordings), and then reached the UK pop charts through hit recordings like "Double Barrel" and "Monkey Spanner". The Kingston All-Stars project does not end there: the resident drummer of Lee Perry's Black Ark, Mikey 'Boo' Richards also contributed, as has the sax and trombone team of Everton and Everald Gayle. There are kettle drums from Supersad and Calvin, lilting steel pan from Dean Barnett, and guitar and percussion from Roger White and Mossman, as well as Stranger Cole and Trevor McNaughton of the Melodians on backing vocals. The album's guest vocalists include: Cedric Myton of the Congos and his singing sparring partner, RZee Jackson, the original Greenwich Farm Rastaman Prince Allah, and Alana Jonsana. Everything was captured on tape at Mixing Lab studio in Kingston during the winter and spring of 2016, with further overdubbing and mixing overseen by Moss in Montreal. This album is only the beginning for the Kingston All-Stars.

J CHOIRBOY Full Effect 12"
J Choirboy returns with bombastic breakbeats and raucous rave chords for your earholes. It's once more time to don the boiler suit and your rose-tinted Lennon frames, bask in the smell of Vicks VapoRub, and pour over the Polaroid albums of yesteryear. A colossal bass drum with a healthy slathering of reverb lays the foundation in "Full Effect"; the interlaced hardcore stab sets a melancholy tone. In "Lights Down", J Choirboy explores the somber and reflective modes of the hoover synth. Subtle plaintive chords offset the characteristic rumbling bass drum and syncopated cadences of the breakbeats.

WILEN, BARNEY Moshi 2LP/DVD
Deluxe remastered reissue of Barney Wilen's 1972 album Moshi, featuring additional artwork and a 20-page booklet of rare pictures, sheet music, and the original liner notes. Includes a bonus DVD (packaged with exclusive artwork) of Caroline de Bendern's 1971 film à l'intention de Mlle Issoufou à Bilma, documenting this amazing African journey. Limited edition of 1000. "In 1970 Barney Wilen assembled a team of filmmakers, technicians, and musicians to travel to Africa for the purpose of recording the music of the native pygmy tribes. Upon returning to Paris two years later, he created Moshi, a dark, eccentric effort fusing avant jazz sensibilities with African rhythms, ambient sound effects, and melodies rooted in American blues traditions. Cut with French and African players including guitarist Pierre Chaze, pianist Michel Graillier, and percussionist Didier Leon, this is music with few precedents or followers, spanning from extraterrestrial dissonance to earthbound, street-legal funk. Wilen pays little heed to conventional structure, assembling tracks like 'Afrika Freak Out' and 'Zombizar' from spare parts of indeterminate origins." --Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Icy strings and a trippy spoken are introduced before "Kora Buta" follows with warm, swooning sample work. The distant, meandering thumb pianos and rainy textures of "Sleeper" color the track's fuzzy drums while a Legowelt-esque pad glides overhead. DAVACHI, SARAH All My Circles Run CD
"All My Circles Run is the third full-length release by Montreal-based electro-acoustic composer Sarah Davachi and her second outing for Students of Decay. In a move which may surprise followers of her previous output, the five compositions on this record eschew synthesizer entirely, each focusing on a different instrument, including strings, voice, organ and piano. What remains consistent, however, is her striking attention to detail and a commitment to tonal possibilities that characterize all of her work. The sinewy 'For Strings' opens the album, with keening overtones stretching out in all directions to form a massive, slow-moving, radiant sound. 'For Voice' charts an even more celestial course, as wordless vocals ebb and flow to awe-inspiring effect. The stunning, melancholic 'For Piano' closes the record and is a high watermark in Davachi's oeuvre, with plaintive piano figures nestled atop a shimmering string drone to create a rich, reverent atmosphere. All My Circles Run is a step forward from an exciting artist whose compositional and aesthetic tendencies steer her steadfastly toward both the subjunctive and the sublime."

VA Choubi Choubi! Folk & Pop Sounds from Iraq Vol. 2 2LP
Restocked. In 2005, Sublime Frequencies released Choubi Choubi: Folk and Pop Sounds from Iraq, and in the ensuing years it has become one of the most beloved and venerable titles in their catalog. Now almost 10 years later, this highly-anticipated second volume is finally here. Compiler and producer Mark Gergis has once again put forth a revelatory and poignant collection of Iraq's national folk music. What has happened to Iraq since the 2003 U.S. invasion and eventual occupation? Endless death, destruction and chaos, the complete take-down of a functional and sovereign secular government (regardless of your opinion on that government), puppet installations, contrived sectarian divisions, the wholesale looting of culture, rampant opportunism, and apparently no lessons learned -- all at the Iraqi people's expense. Naturally, music has continued to be produced in Iraq -- however, since 2003, musicians and artists have been consistently targeted and attacked by extremists, who have also bombed music shops and forced the closing of venues and music halls. The musical style most prominently focused on in this volume is the infamous Iraqi choubi, (pronounced choe-bee), with its distinct driving rhythm that feature fiddles, double-reed instruments, bass, keyboards, and oud over its signature beat. Choubi is Iraq's version of the regionally popular dabke, another celebratory Levantine folkloric style of rhythm and line dance. What really defines the Iraqi choubi sound are the crisp, rapid-fire machine-gun style percussive rhythms set atop the main beat. To the uninitiated, they sound almost electronic. Sometimes they are, but more often this is the work of the khishba -- a unique hand-drum of nomadic origin (aka the zanbour -- Arabic for wasp), which appears across the board in many styles of Iraqi music today, with extensions of it also heard in Syrian and Kuwaiti music. Among other styles featured in this volume are Iraq's legendary brand of mawal -- an ornamental vocal improvisation that sets the tone of a song, regardless of the style, and the outstanding Iraqi hecha, with its lumbering and determined rhythm pulsing beneath sad, antagonized vocals -- as heard on tracks A4 and B2. The tracks on this collection were produced during the Saddam era -- between the 1980s and early-2000s. An important goal within the Iraqi Baathist agenda was to promote its brand of secularism, which saw the establishment of cultural centers, and a fostering of the arts. Music was more encouraged, albeit more institutionalized than ever -- particularly folkloric and heritage music such as choubi. In an Iraqi army comprised of seven divisions, Saddam referred to singers as the eighth. Still, unless a rare level of stardom has been achieved, being a singer or musician isn't usually encouraged or viewed as a respectable lifestyle in much of the Arab world. It's often those deemed social outsiders that tend to find their niche in music -- particularly the "party music" heard on this collection. Among them are the Rom Gypsy Iraqis (known as Kawliya in Arabic). A number of female singers wear masks and adopt pseudonyms to protect their identities, as some are runaways or prostitutes making ends meet in the seedy nightclub scene. Occasionally, they end up with successful recording careers. Sajida Obeid, who has appeared on both volumes of Choubi Choubi! is an example of a talented Kawliya singer from the nightclub scene of the 1980s who rose to choubi infamy in Baghdad. Choubi inevitably invokes tawdry connotations within Iraqi society (cheap nightclubs for the lower classes, outcast gypsies and singing prostitutes), but in fact, many calibers of Iraqi singers and ensembles have recorded and performed the music. Unofficially, choubi can be called the national dance of Iraq. Though some may deny this claim (mostly due to its reputation and stigma), at most Iraqi weddings you'll find people from all walks flaunting their best choubi moves. Iraqi music has always had a way of transcending religious groups and ethnicity, collectively shared between Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians and myriad other Iraqi minorities. In 2013 sadly, this diversity and unity within Iraq is increasingly fragmented, but traditions continue throughout the internationally displaced diaspora. Limited edition 2LP set in a heavy gatefold jacket with beautiful artwork and liner notes by Mark Gergis.

Our structures of communication, exploration, and discovery are mediated by technological shifts and we exist in simultaneity between our physical environment and emerging cyberspaces with a blended perception of embodiment and orientation within both - sirens reverberating through station tunnels, fluctuating harmonics of subway engines, echoing tannoy systems, piercing screams of electromagnetic fields. The sonic material of this album is composed exclusively of field-recordings captured in transit through Kyoto, Tokyo, and Berlin, in addition to electromagnetic field recordings captured in Glasgow and Edinburgh. CONRAD WITH FAUST, TONY Outside The Dream Syndicate LP
2017 repress; LP version. "Violinist, composer and filmmaker Tony Conrad started his career in New York in the early 1960s. As a member of the Theater of Eternal Music (a.k.a. the Dream Syndicate) alongside John Cale, La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela and Angus MacLise, he participated in now-legendary and often legendarily loud drone performances with many pieces having no beginning and no end. During a fateful trip to Germany in 1972, Conrad met with avant-rock visionaries Faust and made the very first record to bear his name. Outside The Dream Syndicate, originally released in Europe only in 1973, is a stunning debut. Two side-long tracks -- 'The Side Of Man And Womankind' and 'The Side Of The Machine' -- show just how far Conrad had moved beyond his minimalist peers. Werner Diermaier's repetitive drum beat and Jean-Hervé Peron's stripped-down bassline conjure a tense, ascetic groove, while Conrad's seamless violin, initially so controlled, reveals a surprising adaptability. The music shifts almost on a subliminal level, pushing and pulling to the drone's internal pulse. It is hard to imagine Conrad's trajectory from downtown Manhattan to a farmhouse in the German countryside that ultimately resulted in Outside The Dream Syndicate, yet no other record captures -- so completely and instantly -- the intersection of avant-garde and rock forms. Outside The Dream Syndicate remains ahead of and bracingly outside of its time. This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release have been carefully been carefully mastered from the original master tapes and include liner notes by musician Jim O'Rourke and author Branden W. Joseph."

PLANNING FOR BURIAL Below The House CD
"In late 2014, Planning For Burial's Thom Wasluck left the red house in New Jersey he'd called home for the last decade to return to his childhood bedroom in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Back in the house where he grew up, Wasluck found himself cut off from the familiarities of the previous decade as he put himself to work in the family trade. The monotony of routine quickly set in; work, home, and alcohol day after day became the norm. The childhood room that had given birth to his primordial four-track recordings was now a place of emptiness. These conditions set the stage for Planning For Burial's third full-length, Below the House. In terms of genre, Planning For Burial is often simply characterized as 'gloom,' which can be seen as a blend of slowcore, shoegaze, doom, '90s alt rock and drone, and this album offers nine sullen and frequently heavy songs that brim with nostalgia and suburban ennui. It is a return to form of sorts to his beloved first album, 2010's Leaving -- an introverted work characterized by its heavy dynamics and personal obsessions. Since the beginning, Planning For Burial has been a solo endeavor. Wasluck has been recording music himself and touring extensively as a one-man band, playing hundreds of shows in DIY spaces and nightclubs, where he has shared the stage with acts like Deafheaven, King Woman and Chelsea Wolfe. Both incredibly loud and intimate, Planning For Burial plays with an unrivaled passion and funereal grace that is equally at home in basements and large venues."

2015 release. Cherrystones pulls together the sympathetic sounds of the psychedelic ghetto. London's best kept secret, Cherrystones has been on the underground scene for a while. People kinda speak of his grooved-out genius in hushed whispers. You might remember when he closed down the final night of ATP after a decade long residency? Cherrystone explains his work: "...As long as it makes people move on the floor, I'm into it. I've been running a rescue home for the culturally starved and ignored - a sonic soup kitchen within a philanthropic playground. That's the vibe." On Critical Mass, Cherrystones tunes the listener in to fourteen groups, separated by locale but united by a restless urge to create on their own terms. From Rizzo's nihilistic Moogie-boogie to a pre-teen Chandra's isolated no-wave. Through Dojoji's downtown-via-Lagos inspired punk-funk and Fote's dark, industrial groove, Critical Mass presents a snapshot of an international underground enthralled with the possibility of the new. Cherrystones on the release: "This compilation was put together through records I was enjoying at that time - loose chips, fragmented discoveries, random punts and the true excitement from that hit of 'What the fuck is that?!' It is an exercise in the good and the rad - solid jams from all corners of the world. A veritable platter to switch on the uninitiated or those who hear and feel the truth - it is not an exercise in rarity to make people feel alienated. HOST, THE Esalen Lectures LP
2015 release. Inspired by think tanks and floatation tanks, psychological research, 2012 mythology, 1960s social planning, stoned apes, elite transhumanism, and the counter-culture, The Host's Esalen Lectures is an imaginary trip to a NorCal psychedelic retreat. Use the sounds to enter into a program of theory and practice, to accompany inward voyages, and for sunset induction rituals. And when the colored dust settles, and the weird dreams have eased off, maybe your neural re-programming has just started? Drawing from a wide source of tranced-out musical legacies, the Esalen Lectures is pitched somewhere between Ash Ra Tempel and Steve Hillage at their most freeform, and more underground new age artists like JD Emmanuel and Ariel Kalma. The Host use sweeping synthesizer patterns and subtle field recordings to create dramatic arcs across the record, and spiraling guitar squalls meet blissed-out, motionless womb lullabies and digitally-enhanced nocturnes to tell a weird story of induction, hypnosis, and psychic disturbance.

DOCUMENTA Drone Pop #1 LP
2015 release. Drone Pop #1 is the second album by cosmic drone-pop septet Documenta. Recorded over four days at Start Together Studios Belfast by Ben McAuley and the band, it also features additional production from David Holmes on "Love As A Ghost". Influenced by the English guitar minimalism emanating from 1980s Rugby, the darkness and light of Detroit's hit factory, and the German Kosmische set's concrète groove - Documenta present a true psychedelia through repetition, melody, and rhythm. A patient year-long process of experimentation and mixing - where the group added "washing machines, aircraft and the sound of Saturday night" - encouraged a fuller overall feel and a marked sonic progression. Documenta on the release: "We experimented at home quite a bit before returning to the studio so we got to stretch our imagination. We're constantly learning as a band and this seemed like the next musical step." Soul music in outer space. Comes on a colored LP.

MAYA Synthezoid Heartbreak/Distant Visions 7"
2016 release. A reissue of a single by Maya - two tracks of timeless, heartfelt, psychedelic outsider music from Cincinnati Ohio from 1975. "Synthezoid Heartbreak" is a "Fuck You!" to those who want you to join the real estate game and turn in your misfired envelope pedals for a suit. The pro-alien sad dirge of "Distant Visions" is a reflective-afternoon delay lurker makes you wonder what happened after the fade out to "Visions". Maybe the homemade air siren blew out the studio? Remastered with additional insert featuring lyrics and notes from Burk Skyhorse Price (Maya) and Cherrystones.

GROSS NET Quantitative Easing LP
2016 release. Gross Net present their debut album Quantitative Easing through Touch Sensitive Records. Initially a guitar/bass/drum-machine duo of Philip Quinn (Girls Names) and Christian Donaghey (Autumns), Gross Net was conceived as an output for ideas alternative to their other groups. After the release of their first cassette EP on Art For Blind Records and Donaghey's subsequent departure to concentrate fully on Autumns, Quinn took up the Gross Net mantle solo. Released via his own Austerity Drive Records imprint earlier this year came Outstanding Debt, a collection of re-commissioned tracks from aborted releases. Beautiful boys, ghosts, exorcisms, resurrections, sex, mental disorder, the boredom that comes with being "dole-scum"; Gross Net now singularly stalks the lineage of electronic body music. Utilizing analog synthesizers, sequencers, virtual studio technology, a slew of effects, voice, and some electric guitar, Gross Net channels everything from Throbbing Gristle's "Tesco Disco", to the fear and futurism of the European cold wave, through amyl-nitrate powered strobe-lit dancefloors and empty, decaying industrial halls. Quinn on the release: "I'm keen to leave mistakes in, or what people may perceive as mistakes. I also try to do things in as few takes as possible, not only for the sake of my own interest but to bring some human aspect back in amongst all the electronics. You're hearing performances, moments in time recorded, not something that's been pieced together from numerous attempts. . . . I want to do something different. I see so much homogeneity in music and in general these days that I want to stand apart, show that there's another way or at least hold a mirror up to what's going on. . . . I'm also keen to use themes which reflect the times we're living in, certainly the darkest days I've seen in my lifetime. Sometimes I feel like I'm just constantly wading through a cultural and political cesspit." Pairing dark and brutal rhythms with existential and world-weary themes, Gross Net is the sound of the post-Brexit dystopia of now, the antidote to the endless whitewash of indie groups in their matching Topshop outfits, and a riposte to the messianic false prophets pontificating a financial ruse as a grand truth.

CAPONE-N-NOREAGA The War Report 2LP
2017 repress. "When Queens natives Capone-N-Noreaga dropped their 1997 debut album The War Report, hip hop was in the middle of a transition period. A new crop of MC's were coming in, many of the benchmark artist of the late '80s and early '90s were starting to fall off and labels focused their efforts on getting artist on mainstream radio ushered in by the 'Jiggy Era.' For Capone-N-Noreaga this commercial shift was not an option, they represented what just a few years earlier their Queens brethren Mobb Deep displayed on their second coming The Infamous LP. To make the Queens connection even deeper, the mastermind behind The War Report was QB Legend Tragedy Khadafi who discovered and molded the duo into the flagship artists for his newly christened 25 to Life Records. In many ways Tragedy was the unofficial thirrd member of the group as he appears on more than half the album. The War Report represented a new era of street science and gritty New York beats, tracks like 'Illegal Life,' 'Stick You,' and 'T.O.N.Y' all became anthems that summer, making this one of the greatest debut albums in hip hop history according to Complex Magazine."

PORTER RICKS Shadow Boat EP 12"
2017 repress. Following a seventeen year hiatus since the release of Symbiotics (1999), Porter Ricks, the duo of sound artist Thomas Köner and music producer Andy Mellwig, return with Shadow Boat EP. In their silence, Köner has been working extensively as a sound designer and artist - exhibiting at the Centre Georges Pompidou, The Louvre and more. Mellwig has collaborated with Kevin Shields, Pete Kember and Gehrard Behles. Shadow Boat EP is deeply nuanced in its perception of space, using complex layers to add depth, detail, and density to non-formulaic techno compositions - buoyant dub, hazy ambience, and colorful sound design.

BNJMN Body Reflections Pt.1 12"
BNJMN's four-track Body Reflections Pt.1 12" captures a uniquely subdued mood of ambient dance music while integrating seamlessly into Tresor's penchant for restrained and dub-inflected techno. Each track introduces symmetry and rhythm in the form of organic percussion. "Overskies" and "Enceladus" are more lethargic and ethereal, both blanketed with discordant melodies and arcing synth lines. "Hadal Zone" is more dance-oriented, with a sophisticated interplay of percussive elements looping over plaintive vocals and soft harmonies. "Syzygy" brings the EP to a techno-focused close with driving kicks, oscillating synths, and repeating minor chords.

MOORE, DUDLEY Bedazzled - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP + CD + 7"
A legendary soundtrack to a legendary film. Originally written by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore for the cult British movie Bedazzled (1967). A sublime musical mixture of pop, jazz, psyche and stupidity, this rare score sadly became the victim of terrible bootlegs in the late '90s, when classic 1960s scores became very much in demand to the easy/jet-set/soundtrack in-crowd. First pressings have always been very hard to find. This is the first legal repress. It comes with the first ever repress of Peter Cook And Dudley Moore Cordially Invite You To Hell, an LP that was given out at the premier consisting of Cook And Moore's improvised radio spots for the film, presented here on CD. This limited edition includes a 7" with alternate mixes of "Bedazzled" and "Love Me". All cues mastered and sequenced by Jon Brooks, AKA The Advisory Circle.

EXPRESSWAY YO-YO DIETING Undone Harmony Following LP
Undone Harmony Following is the latest offering from Oregon's Pat Maher, a noise veteran whose career has taken him in a variety of different directions, from the pitch-black drone of his work as Indignant Senility to the fractured house of Diamond Catalog. This time he reprises the Yo-Yo Dieting project (last seen on 2010's exemplary Bubblethug) to once again plumb the depths of screwed and chopped rap, diving into haunted crevices and dissolving his collection of tapes and battered CDs and emerging with a truly confounding full-length. Maher's skill is in retaining the unmistakable sound of hip-hop while pushing and pulling it into narcotic, ear-destroying directions. Think a tenth generation copy of a DJ Screw tape piped through a broken overdrive pedal or Lil Ugly Mane blasted through a blown speaker system from a car a few blocks down the street. Tracks don't so much start and finish as they do bubble up from an oily swamp of tape hiss, reverb and delay, with beats and bass undulating beneath half-heard vocals and jagged bursts of white noise. It's not an easy listen, but it's about as vital as it gets. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 500.

HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND Sharpener 2LP
After the phenomenal success of 2016's critically-acclaimed Sharpener, which hit number 3 in the iTunes jazz charts and number 14 in the Independent Album charts, Hackney Colliery Band present a double vinyl version of the album, featuring three bonus dancefloor-friendly tracks. On the back of two hugely successful albums and almost constant touring, HCB's third album Sharpener shows the band on more confident form than ever, with powerful new electronic elements and a dancefloor sensibility adding to the jazz, rock and soul for which they are known. Building on the strength of their critically-acclaimed original writing, Sharpener has a powerful set of originals at its core, alongside a trio of leftfield covers in the shape of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box", Kwabs's "Wrong Or Right", and Three Trapped Tigers' "Cramm". With the addition of three covers, this vinyl release resounds with the humor, musicianship, and charm which HCB are known for. "Heroes", a bouncy tribute to the late David Bowie, "Rolling In The Deep" was commissioned as part of the band's 45 minute set at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and "Give It Up", as heard on the 2016 Ambrosia Deluxe custard advertisement. Album opener "Jump Then Run" echoes the sound of the legendary Moondog, while "Gather Your Wits" is a roof-raising rumble of brass and rebellious behavior. "Wrong Or Right", a soulful version of London soul star Kwabs's great tune, comes to life with juicy menace before "The Morning", an uplifting and anthemic arrangement, builds into joyous hedonism. "When You Know" gives space to the band's superb jazz chops, while album title track "Sharpener" is a big, bold, brassy, and utterly mesmerizing affair. It's perhaps the band's outstanding arrangements which sets them apart. From the intricacies of "Timelapse" to the introspection of "Reawake", from the punky rock groove of "It's Normally Bigger" (based on a true story) to the rave jazz of "Bread And Circuses", the arrangements throughout showcase writers Steve Pretty, Olly Blackman, and Luke Christie's contrasting styles and ability to switch from screaming energy to moody introspection, from cutting-edge jazz to dancefloor rave, proving that Hackney Colliery Band is not just another party brass band blowing through the usual pop covers. Double LP comes on heavyweight vinyl, one red, one blue; Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

GAYE, MARVIN What's Going On LP
2017 repress; 2014 reissue. Originally released in 1971. "What's Going On is not only Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, it's the most important and passionate record to come out of soul music, delivered by one of its finest voices, a man finally free to speak his mind and so move from R&B sex symbol to true recording artist. With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, 'What's Going On.' When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Confirmed by its tremendous commercial success in January 1971, he recorded the rest of the album over ten days in March, and Motown released it in late May. Besides cementing Marvin Gaye as one of the most important artists in pop music, What's Going On was far and away the best full-length to issue from the singles-dominated Motown factory, and arguably the best soul album of all time." --John Bush, AllMusic

MORRICONE, ENNIO The Thing LP
"Waxwork Records is thrilled to present the deluxe soundtrack re-issue to 1982's sci-fi horror classic, John Carpenter's The Thing. Composed by the legendary Ennio Morricone, the soundtrack to The Thing is a landmark musical composition that is cold, dark, minimal, and effective. Considered to be John Carpenter's directorial masterpiece, The Thing is praised as one of the greatest films of its genre by both fans and critics. Starring Kurt Russel and A. Wilford Brimley, The Thing follows a team of researchers in Antarctica as they are infiltrated by a parasitic extraterrestrial life form that assimilates other organisms and then imitates them. The classic soundtrack composed by Ennio Morricone effectively captures the cold, isolated tone of the story and film, and marks one of the few John Carpenter directed films that Carpenter did not score himself. Waxwork Records worked for two years to ensure that such a highly anticipated and sought after vinyl soundtrack re-issue would meet and exceed expectations of the biggest fan of John Carpenter and his sci-fi / horror tour de force that is The Thing. Features include the complete Ennio Morricone soundtrack re-mastered from the original master tapes, 180 gram white-snow colored vinyl, all new artwork by Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative, deluxe heavyweight packaging including satin coated old-style gatefold jackets with UV spot-gloss, and an an 11" x 22" poster."

ANDREWS & THE YAWNS, JOHN Bad Posture LP
"Throughout years of traveling, John Andrews has documented his life with his home recordings. His first record, Bit By The Fang, found him living in the amish country of Lancaster, PA. On his latest record, Bad Posture, he waves farewell to Pennsylvania and greets the wooded hills of Barrington, NH. These songs were written slowly and quietly throughout the winter, usually late at night next to the wood stove. It was recorded in Andrews' barn with the doors ajar, welcoming the springtime -- inviting the outside noises in. You can hear the crickets chirping and the occasional truck driving by. The songs themselves lend their hand like slow backwoods Beatles demos covered in a thin blanket of tape hiss. Andrews' band, The Yawns, has been crystallized with staples from the New England freak scene: Rachel Neveu and Lukas Goudreault (MMOSS / Soft Eyes) and Joey Schneider. The album was mixed with headphones at the foot of Emma Critchett's grave, who lived in the Yawns' house during the 1800s. The record is an ode to her and all who have lived there. It paints a picture of living in the 'free-country' on the precipice of a rapidly changing political climate."

NEGRO & SEAN P, JOEY The Soul Of Disco Volume One 2LP
Disco-nut producer Joey Negro and fellow crafty crate-digger Sean P presented the first of their great Soul Of Disco albums (ZEDD 007CD) in 2005, rammed to the rafters with classic, rare, hard to find gems from the era that brought us fantastic music and sparkly platforms. Now, more than ten years later, the album finally sees a gatefold double vinyl release featuring ten of the best tracks from volume one of the series. These rare and highly sought after tracks 12 inches would likely be very expensive, if someone would be lucky enough to find them in the first place. This collection spans from 1976-82, with an R&B slant and more song-based material. It is intended to show that there were a few more sides (many more to come, of course) to one of the last century's biggest musical phenomena. In a compilation brimming over with accessible earthiness, rawness and downright soulfulness, Joey and Sean continue their mission to help us understand how disco's influence is still shaping music 30 years after it broke into the mainstream. Features: Tenderness, The Disco Fox, Jesse G, Velvet Hammer, Zebra, Sandi Havens, Sargeant & Malone, Milton Hamilton, The Sparkles and Natural Order.

NEGRO, JOEY Electro: A Personal Selection of Electro Classics 2CD
Joey Negro presents a snapshot of the edgier, robotic sounds of the emerging early '80s electro scene. From stone-cold classics such as Hashim's "Al Naafiysh (The Soul)", Tyrone Brunson's "The Smurf" and Key-Matic's "Breakin' In Space", to revered party anthem's such as Aleem's "Release Yourself (Dub)", Two Sisters' "High Noon (Part 2)" and Dwayne Omarr's "This Party's Jam Packed", to electro-oddities like Paul Hardcastle's "Rain Forest" and The Packman's "I'm The Packman", Electro is a genuine labor of love and a timely reminder of the raw drum machine sounds that were soon to define the beginning of the house and techno scenes. The album features sleeves notes written by early electro pioneer and DJ Greg Wilson who states: "during the early-mid '80s, electro-funk became the dominant force on the UK's black music scene. With the previous era's jazz-funk movement running out of steam the way was clear for this new technological direction to sweep out the old and announce a new wave of dance music with a distinctive futuristic edge." Dave Lee (Joey Negro) may be associated with disco, funk and boogie more than electro, but the truth is, he is a music fan first and foremost. Back in the early '80s, Dave was fanatical about this futuristic new style of dance music called electro. Although at the time this new sound remained very divisive within the soul and jazz-funk scenes, he liked both Lonnie Liston Smith and Man Parrish. As Dave recalls in his own album sleeve notes: "I can see why the soul boys hated electro as it lacked the soaring vocals, intricate orchestration and polished organic production of jazz funk. Unfortunately for the purists by the mid '80s, all dance music had become more electronic with the likes of Roland introducing powerful drum machines and affordable synthesizers, not to mention the onset of early samplers. Many straight-up soul boogie records got electro-fied." This album presents some of Joey Negro's favorites, plus a few lesser-known and collectable cuts. CD version features the above mentioned and: Dynamix II, Too Tough Tee, Newcleus, The Russell Brothers, Midnight Star, G-Force, Ronnie Gee & Captain Cee, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Imperial Brothers, Divine Sounds, The Beat Box Boys, Kosmic Light Force, High Fidelity Three, X-Ray Vision.
