NATAN H Atmosphere 12"
Acid Camp Records is rolling through again with the atmospheric and cosmic-oriented tracks of Natan H. "Atmosphere" begins with layers of time signatures working in tandem. The oE-kilter drums grow towards a heavier climax. Techno serialist Conforce provides a remix. Through the use of filters, polyrhythms, and kinetic programming, Conforce lays a blueprint for driving techno. "Remote View Pt. I" is an ambient break, shifting gears to a place both ethereal and planetary. "Remote View Pt. II", again, breaks away from traditional timing by tracing layers of hi-hats, delayed strings, and synths that alternate throughout the arrangement in syncopation.

HANCHI The Fabulous Pain 12"
"Good, bad, love, hate and pleasure, pain, Forever linked go, I dream of pleasure with pain, It never, never came; No one but me to blame." The second vinyl release on Algebra Of Need sees French artist Hanchi with a four track EP of low speed, modernized techno teaming unsteady, tense atmospherics with slow burning percussion and resonant synthetic loops, shadowed by the sentiment of a love letter to the paramours of the past echoed in the poem above.

ACID ELF Ultrasound EP 12"
Michael Avery under his Acid Elf guise, presents four essential tracks from the archives. There's a subdued, hypnotic, and delirious quality to the productions on this EP, ranging from the uneasy delay pulses of "Fetus" to the metallic clamor of "Urban Wasteland", but most importantly they're all injected with a distinctive personality. This is undoubtedly acid music, but it crackles with an energy far removed from the cookie-cutter Chicago knock-off formula. Perennial favorites such as the 606, 707, 808, 909, Jupiter 6, 101, 303, MS-20, and a Dopefer modular are all run through a Space Echo.

DEPARDIEU, GERARD Depardieu Chante Barbara 2LP+CD
Depardieu Chante Barbara is a collaboration between acclaimed French actor Gérard Depardieu and pianist, conductor, and arranger Gérard Daguerre, who came together to record songs originally made famous by their former collaborator, French chanson star Barbara (1930-1997). Depardieu has always proclaimed his devotion to the woman with whom he performed Lily Passion in 1986, and Daguerre was Barbara's musical partner for 17 years until her death. Daguerre wanted to make sure that "the path opened by Barbara continued and the adventure went on." In this spirit, he recorded an instrumental album and played it for Depardieu, who decided to sing two songs: "Nantes" and "A force de," written by his son for Barbara. The pair recorded at Barbara's former home in Précy-sur-Marne, France, and emerged with 14 songs marked by a raw sensitivity and the magical surroundings of that location. Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves.

SUNNY & THE SUNLINERS Should I Take You Home/My Dream 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present this killer two sider reissue from Sunny & The Sunliners. Sunny Ozuna, who formed his band, Sunny & The Sunliners, in the early 60's, is a true legend in the history of not just Chicano music, but American music. Sunny 'Mr. Brown Eyed Soul' Ozuna is highly regarded as one of the architects of the sweet soul sound that has been comped on countless 'Lowrider Oldies' collections, and his music has been pouring out of 1964 Chevy Impalas since, well, 1964. Side A's 'Should I Take You Home' is one of his flagship tunes that embodies everything that makes Sunny's music so appealing. A mid tempo masterpiece that is as cool and swaggy as it is sweet and innocent. Side B finds Sunny covering the Harvey Averne Classic 'My Dream'. It's another perfect example of the distinctive blend of Tejano music and American soul that makes Sunny & The Sunliners so unique. To say we are obsessed with the music of Sunny & The Sunliners would be to put it lightly. We have been working on a proper reissue project focusing on the for their music for a few years now and the full compilation will be out in 2017."

LADY WRAY Underneath My Feet/Guilty 7"
"Following up on the success of Lady Wray's solo debut album queen alone, we are proud to give you another 45 offering, this time showing another side of Nicole. Known worldwide for her early career as a hip hop/r&b singer, then more recently for her more matured soul inspired writing, the a side of this one 'Underneath My Feet' shows just how hard it is to put Lady Wray in a box. If you haven't seen her live show, you may have no idea that she has a healthy bad ass rock and roll side to her, commanding crowds with a raucousness that likens Betty Davis. Underneath my feet is a tough blend of glam rock drums and guitar stabs that Nicole takes to like a fish to water. A self proclaimed voodoo woman, putting a spell on the listener, warning all of her unbridled power."

VINCE, BEN Monuments LP
Sophomore album from minimalist improviser Ben Vince. Monuments comes into an age of global uncertainty, where time and truth refract and mutate, demanding a response. From an axis of improvisation, Vince's saxophone works embrace the contours of more dynamic, emotive landscapes where rich motifs coalesce and feel their way around each other. In a departure from the more rigid looping of his debut The Purge (2016), Monuments explores much more progressive minimalist structures that undulate in-and-out of phase whilst not being afraid to suddenly warp or elevate unexpectedly. With four tracks spanning almost 35 minutes of music, each one is an epic journey into glacial melodies, drones, and velvet-like pitched bass tones, which sound even more lush on heavyweight vinyl. Ben Vince is also an active DJ, performer, and improviser, in demand for solo gigs, supporting the finest experimental acts old and new, including Keiji Haino and Tomaga. He is also known to be involved in live projects with Charles Hayward (This Heat) and NTS-selector and rising-star, Coby Sey. Comes in reverse board card cover with a stamped envelope, an art print and a collectors insert; 180 gram vinyl; Includes a download code.

This was reissued once before over a decade ago, now back again with the original artwork, and pressed from new stampers made from the pristine-condition original mother plates, yielding the identical deep and full Jamaican mastering of the original. A truly unique album that deserves a place in every self-respecting collection of deejay records."

CANNIBALE No Mercy For Love CD
Still unknown in rock territory, French band Cannibale gets its name from its "kind of exotic garage" music whose humid tropical groove is slowly eating up all the stereotypes about Born Bad Records releases. If there's cannibalism to be found in No Mercy For Love, it's in reference to the Caribbean rhythms here-and-there, and to the psychedelic sound from the backwoods that make this first album a peculiar occurrence in the land of strikes and wine drinkers. There's never any silence with Cannibale and, as for the lambs, stick to the village in the middle of nowhere where the band members reside - a hamlet in Normandy with a total population of 300, including the cows. Rather than human flesh, these guys have been feeding on their own impatience. Lead guitarist Manuel and singer Nicolas met in junior high (which is the case for 99% of rock bands so far), but the members of Cannibale have a Frustration type profile - almost all of them are over forty. During the last twenty years, with unbending faith, these guys played in loads of bands that never made it to the top (Amib, De Rien, 7Questions, Kouyaté Neerman, Renza Bo, Blast) and even ended up playing as session musicians alongside Camile Bazbaz or Johnny Halliday. After winning the Inrocks Labs contest with Bow Low, their penultimate band, and releasing two albums with Because, the Norman guys finally decided to create Cannibale in 2016. In theory, considering the beginning of their career, or lack thereof, you couldn't imagine you'd end up hearing the sounds from No Mercy For Love: a surprising mixture of cumbia, African rhythms and garage music. Or, if you will, a kind of missing link between Fela Kuti, The Doors, and The Seeds. A bunch of forty year-olds whose origins are as white as their soul is black. "Releasing the album in our forties, we think it's a laugh. Of course we keep on believing, it's all we do, it's what's keeping us alive."

Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011), is one of the most important representatives of Germany's electronic music avant-garde. He was a member of Tangerine Dream and Kluster, and also released countless solo albums. Pole, the Düsseldorf-native musician Stefan Betke, looks back on a two decade career in abstract electronic club music. With Barbara Preisinger he created Scape Records and his own mastering studio Scape Mastering. The Con-Struct series is based off of Schnitzler's daily excursions through the sonic diversity of his synthesizers. Finding exceptional sounds with great regularity, he preserved them for use in subsequent live performances, amassing a vast sound archive. Jens Strüver, the producer of the Con-Struct series, came up with the idea of "con-structing" new compositions, not remixes, from the archived material. A few words from Pole on his "con-structions": "To be honest, in earlier times I never quite warmed to Conrad Schnitzler's work. Back then, in the middle of the '80s, we were still occupied with traditional band projects... We still asked ourselves the question: 'How can we actually get away from these instruments and structures?' They seemed so outmoded. Then came my first contact with Conrad's productions: a Tangerine Dream album that he co-produced and on which he played violin, synthesizer and typewriter. It wasn't a good start. I didn't much like the album. Nevertheless, something had happened. I made a unilateral decision for the band, brought a TR-808 and a Minimoog to rehearsal and announced: 'We're going electronic.' After that, everything happened all by itself. I found out more about this Schnitzler from Berlin who always impressed me with his complexity, his humorous nature and almost absurd variety. So years later, when I was asked if I would participate in the Con-Struct series, there was no way I could refuse. His influence had since become too important for me. Contrary to the original Con-Struct concept, however, it was my idea to do it half and half: 50 percent sounds from Conrad and 50 percent from me. The collaboration went according to the following rules: I myself use four things - a modified old rhythm machine, two old synthesizers, and my modular system. From Schnitzler come four complex sounds, which are always run through a modular patch. Coincidence should play an important role. Then I sent everything through my mixer - for dubbing. It worked almost automatically. His sounds led and I joined in."

It was recorded during the Udin&Jazz 2008 Festival in Udine, Italy. Both William Parker and Stefano Scodanibbio are composers and improvisers possessing a deep sense of musical poetry, organic inventiveness, and personal style. During his too short lifetime, Stefano Scodanibbio (b. 1956 / d. 2012) was renowned as an interpreter and collaborator with many of the major composers writing for the contrabass (Bussotti, Donatoni, Estrada, Ferneyhough, Frith, Globokar, Xenakis)."

NYTT LAND Fimbulvinter CD
Notably outstanding on the Russian scene and largely compared with the legendary Wardruna, Nytt Land are unique in their devotion to ritual northern music and tradition. Their approach, using genuine native hand-crafted instruments, and true Old Norse, help them to grasp the true spirit of ancient northern music like no one in Eastern Europe has done before. Their music is mostly based on the sources from Poetic Edda, performed in original Old Islandic. Fimbulvinter is enriched with instruments like bagpipes and trembita (Alpine horn), and throat singing, skillfully used to illustrate the occurrence of the forces of chaos; chthonic monsters in the world of men and gods. Fear and powerlessness alongside belief in the coming revival, renewal. All Scandinavian mythology is permeated with fatalism, humbleness to fate. The same mood saturates Fimbulvinter. The first part is dedicated to the creation of the world and people, embodying the warm seasons. The second half to winter, the death of all living things. Nytt Land supported Wardruna on their Russian tour in February of 2017. Features: Uliana Shulepina and Eisenslav (Kroda). CD version comes in a six-panel digipak, featuring all lyrics.

HAWKINS, SCREAMIN' JAY At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins LP
Cornbread Records present a reissue of At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins, originally released in 1958. By far one of the most outrageous performers of the early years of rock, prone to emerging from coffins on stage, with a flaming skull named Henry as his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable. His 1958 debut, At Home, featuring his legendary "I Put A Spell On You," along with surreal hits like "Hong Kong," "Take Me Back To The Boot And Saddle," or his wild-ass reinventions of old standards like "I Love Paris" and "Deep Purple" is a carefully arranged yet gritty, Ray Charles-gone-crazy styled, full band rhythm, and blues masterpiece, filled with enough howls and groans to send chills down your spine. Reissued here on 180 gram vinyl; Includes a download code.

Cornbread Records present a reissue of Maya Angelou's Miss Calypso, originally released in 1956. At age 28, prior to her fame as a poet and author, Maya Angelou (born Marguerite Annie Johnson) was performing modern dance and singing calypso tunes in San Francisco nightclubs. Harry Belafonte had just hit the big time and made calypso a household name, and Angelou followed suit in 1956 with a record of her own, her first and only attempt to hit the big time in the music business. By 1959 she had moved to NYC and joined the Harlem Writers Guild and the rest, as they say, is history. That, however, is not to dismiss this record as merely a footnote in her history, it is in fact a fine piece of exotica, a killer LP of pop calypso that should appeal not only to fans of her writing and lovers of '50s kitsch exotica, but calypso fans in general. Reissued here on 180 gram vinyl; Includes a download code.

English singer-songwriter Tony Sheridan (1940-2013) may be famous for only one thing: performing with The Beatles in their earliest incarnation. Featuring two songs backed by The Beatles ("My Bonnie" and "The Saints"), his 1962 debut LP is a work of classic early-'60s European beat and early rock and roll. Essential for any Beatles collector and any fan of early-'60s Euro-beat. This reissue includes five bonus tracks. 180-gram vinyl. Includes download code.

Recorded at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach, CA, on September 13, 1953, this is a historic recording for many reasons, and one of the earliest meetings of East and West Coast jazz artists. While Miles Davis and Chet Baker need no introduction, Harold Rumsey might. He was a West Coast jazz bassist who, in 1949, formed the Lighthouse All-Stars, a longstanding group that performed at the Hermosa Beach club every Sunday night for nearly a decade. Though he might not be a household name, his group's alumni include Jimmy Giuffre, Shorty Rogers, Max Roach, Bud Shank, Sonny Criss, Hampton Hawes, Shelly Manne, and more. Featuring rousing renditions of "'Round Midnight," "Night In Tunisia," and "At Last," and the killer drum solo from Roach, "Drum Conversation," this is a brilliant window into the 1950s LA scene, and Davis's particular ability to fit into nearly any jazz setting with ease. BEATLES, THE 1962 The Audition Tapes LP
Recorded on January 1, 1962, in London, this is maybe the most famous audition tape in popular music history, an audition that altered the course of music. The Beatles, in their Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Best incarnation, recorded these 12 rollicking covers for the Decca label in just under an hour. They were eventually rejected by the label and went on to sign with EMI subsidiary Parlophone, and the rest, as they say, is history. Had they signed with the label in the winter of 1962, would they have become the band that changed the world? Who knows . . . but what is clear is that this was a great band, even in infancy, and these great rock and roll covers not only show their potential, they're a damn fun listen in their own right. 180-gram vinyl. Includes download code.

ADIGERY, CHARLOTTE 1,681/Senegal Seduction/Le Froid/Celle 12"
Charlotte Adigéry is a friend of DeeWee. She sings in both English and French. This EP was written in collaboration between Charlotte and Bolis Pupul, then produced by the Dewaele brothers (Soulwax/2manydjs) at DeeWee in Ghent. "1,618" arrives somewhere between a futurist song and a cosmic disco sound. It twists and turns. "Senegal Seduction" is a slow melodic ride. "Le Froid" is a percussive vocal dub piece. Charlotte's vocals turned inside then out again. "Celle" is a song addressed to a father and a heartbeat to finish. Sleeve design by Ill Studio, Paris.

"One can't speak of California's famed desert rock movement without mentioning the visionary producer/musician Chris Goss. The so-called Godfather of the Joshua Tree-centered scene, Goss has produced famed and acclaimed albums by groups like Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Kyuss, Screaming Trees, and numerous others. Before he was known as a renowned producer though, he was the singer/guitarist, and only consistent member of one of the most influential-yet-forgotten hard rock groups of all time: Masters of Reality. So many years later, Masters Of Reality's debut still feels like a hard-hitting breath of fresh air in a modern landscape of over-produced rock music. It's in this sense of tribute that Delicious Vinyl presents this re-issue of the acclaimed record. The audio has been re-mastered, and its original 'Blue Garden' artwork has been restored, while Rick Rubin's hard rock production chops shine bright, and blare loudly in equal measure, on highlights like the foot-stomping 'John Brown', the frantic live-staple 'Domino', and proto-stoner pieces like 'Doraldina's Prophecies' and 'Kill The King.' As an additional bonus, this CD set comes bundled with a second disc, featuring their live recording How High The Moon. The album was recorded at the famed LA rock venue The Viper Room, and features a riotous selection of live MoR renditions, as well as an appearance by the late Scott Weiland (formerly of Stone Temple Pilots & Velvet Revolver) duetting with Goss on the track 'Jindalee Jindalie'."

"Space Jam 2017" sees thatmanmonkz team up with New York City's Clyde Phalanx to create a pure psyched up space house outing. "Evolver" is a soulful disco burner reminiscent of Idjut Boys, grooving along with smooth RnB vocals and salacious keys.

PEOPLE LIKE US Abridged Too Far LP
People Like Us is audiovisual collage artist Vicki Bennett, who has been making work available via CD, DVD and vinyl releases, radio broadcasts, performances, gallery exhibits, and online streaming for 25 years. Since 1992, she has developed an immediately recognizable aesthetic repurposing pre-existing footage to craft audio and video collages with an equally dark and witty take on popular culture. She sees sampling and appropriation as folk art sourced from the palette of contemporary media and technology, with the sharing and cross-referencing incumbent to a populist form. BERNSTEIN, ELMER To Kill A Mockingbird LP
Doxy present a reissue of Elmer Bernstein's soundtrack for To Kill A Mockingbird. The film, directed by Robert Mulligan, was originally released in 1962. Between 1951 and 2002, Elmer Bernstein composed over 200 scores for films and TV programs. Among the great film scores he composed from 1955 to 1965 - including 1960's The Magnificent Seven, 1963's The Great Escape (DOC 105LP), and 1956's The Ten Commandments - the one Bernstein picked as his favorite was To Kill A Mockingbird (1962). This has one of the simplest and most delicate film scores ever composed. The opening main title features a delicate waltz tempo mixed with a more expansive theme which beautifully sets the mood for this drama of innocent childhood and racial prejudice. This is a masterpiece of subtle film scoring and one of the greatest from the past sixty years.

COLACI, ENNIO Stereoscope 12"
Stereoscope is Ennio Colaci's debut in Dreiklang's third triangular composition with Tadeo and David Hausdorf remixes. Ennio's "Stereoscope" steers away from Minimono's disco flavored house orientated sounds, bringing a warm palette of textures in the form of soft noise, percs, dubby delayed chords, and a sub kick and bass relationship reminiscent of early dub techno records. Alongside the title track there are two remixes from David Hausdorf and Tadeo. Tadeo roughens "Stereoscope" up and introduces a more techy sound, while David Hausdorf dries up the original, moving the focus to the dub chord.

HOODOO RHYTHM DEVILS Live... Old Waldorf, San Francisco '77 CD
Hoodoo Rhythm Devils, live at the Old Waldorf on May 12th, 1977. Originally signed to Capitol Records in 1971, Hoodoo Rhythm Devil's debut LP, Rack Jobbers Rule went by largely unnoticed, but simultaneously helped in launching the band's live career, which was certainly more successful than their recorded legacy. Capturing a band like HRD live is no mean feat, but their appearance at the Old Waldorf is one that is relatively unmatched in this area. The band was hailed at the time by the Berkeley press as "A local natural resource fueled by bar-be-que sauce." Echoes present the entire KSAN FM broadcast of the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils live from the Old Waldorf, San Francisco 12th May 1977. Originally aired on May 17th, 1977. Etruria Beat label owner Luca Agnelli is back on his own label with two original cuts and two remixes by Abstract Division and Yotam Avni. Original tracks "Metamorphosis" and "Chaos" are very powerful techno tunes, filled with hypnotic looped chords, melodic synth stabs on solid beats, and drops. Dynamic Reflections owner Abstract Division revisited "Metamorphosis" in a very mental trippy way, adding a Dutch raw and dark touch to the title. With recent releases on Innervisions and Stroboscopic Artefact, Yotam Avni transforms "Metamorphosis" into a pumping groovy track that can destroy any dancefloor.

Paul Woolford, aka Special Request, provides a continuous mix for the 91st installment of Fabric's mix series. Following a slightly surreal and cavernous beginning, the classic UK techno of Caustic Window (an alias of Richard D. James - Aphex Twin) opens up proceedings and laying the foundation of the mix. The momentum builds as the ruthless tones of 214's "Frostbite" signify a turn into darker waters. The murky tension sets the scene for the first of six new Special Request tracks, "Redrum". Then, Stefan Vincent's lush emotive "Aquilae" and a voice recording from Cristian Vogel's "Atomic Layers" provide a pause to breathe before the descent into the second half, where the mix travels rapidly through various shades of jungle, drum & bass, and noise, from the dubwise movement of Forest Drive West, to classic Dillinja and beyond with the mix peaking with the furious jungle of "Stairfoot Lane Bunker" and the drum & bass of DJ Trace & Nico. Philippe Baden Powell (son of Brazilian musical legend, Baden Powell de Aquino) is reinventing Brazilian jazz in the lineage of his father's generation. Balancing the classical with the spiritual, the cinematic with the introspective, and sensitivity with a distinctly Brazilian groove, Notes Over Poetry calls upon the inspiration of the many musical and artistic greats Philippe has been surrounded by throughout his life. A nomadic upbringing - moving between Rio, Paris and the coincidently named German city of Baden - Baden, as well as touring internationally alongside his father and brother, provided boundless encounters with inspirational figures. Touring also gave Philippe his first taste of life in the spotlight: recorded when he was just thirteen, a sold-out show alongside his father and brother at Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio De Janeiro, would become the 1996 album Baden Powell & Filhos. Classically Brazilian in its roots, but global in its outlook, Notes Over Poetry sits as comfortably next to Tom Jobim's 1971 album Wave (LR 349LP) as it does to Robert Glasper's Black Radio (2011). "Vamos Donatear" - a track dedicated to the great Joao Donato - is hot, fluid samba-jazz in the vein of the Brazilian legend himself, while the equally groovy "Chica" hosts punchy horn arrangements reminiscent of masterpieces by Arthur Verocai and Eumir Deodato. With lyrics in English, the title track and the satin-soft "State Of Music" lean toward the cooler climate of North American hip hop and Rn'B, while "For You To Know" is a spellbinding syrup of deep-jazz, flaunting Philippe's talent for writing powerfully emotive melody and harmony. To his father, Philippe attributes key characteristics which have enriched and guided him in his professional life. With his father he also shares an innate pull towards collaboration as key to the creative process. Credit is indeed due to the musicians on the album: French jazz drummer André Ceccarelli, who has worked with Aretha Franklin and Michel Legrande; Belgian jazz vocalist David Linx; and Afro-Brazilian percussionist Ruca Rebordão. Parallel to a global revival of jazz as an art-form capable of traversing its once tired image, new generations of music lovers are rediscovering Brazilian music from the '60s onwards. Philippe Baden Powell's music perfectly reflects Brazil's huge contribution to the global jazz landscape, and with Notes Over Poetry, he presents a milestone release in his career as a torchbearer for a new wave of Brazilian artists.

MAZOZMA Heavy Death Head LP
"Michael Turner, famed resident of Louisville/Lexington KY, main cog in the splendid Warmer Milks and valuable presence in many other ensembles, has recently migrated to New England. And we are honored to have him amongst us. As a way of making him feel 'to home,' Feeding Tube has released his most recent slab of insane solo aktion, Heavy Death Hand, as splendidly 'out' an LP as anyone could ask for. Mazozma is a recent nom de musique assumed by Turner, following a passel of albums released under the name Ma Turner. And every one of them we've heard is a pure blitz of sound designed to make your brain feel all soft and runny. The vibe of the music is pure American zonerism -- think of stuff like the Bobby J Records catalog, the Department Store Santas, Willimantic Shrin, and other LPs that seem to exist inside their own personal aesthetic continuum. One gets the feeling that they carry their own very real message, but that it is so deeply coded, so artfully fucked-with, and so weirdly personal that getting to its essence is like trying to play chess with Kaspar Hauser. The music itself is rock-based, but abstract, chittering, and incredibly fascinating. There are lots of people who try to do something new and original with guitar pedals and keyboard toggles and altered vocals, but usually it just ends up sounding like stoner bong-dust. Mazozma's music coheres somehow, venting poison gases with a gentle scent and strange allure. All of Turner's albums are pretty amazing, but this one seems to go further in terms of pure sonic reach. The record more or less defines a very specific type of 'late night music,' one which is favored by people who embrace the aether at just around the time most of us abandon hope and wish only to slip into the arms of Morpheus. As the soundtrack to a waking dream, it almost makes sense." --Byron Coley Edition of 400.

"Salami J.R. (aka Joey Pizza Slice) has returned with a new record. Mr. J.R. (aka Mr. Slice) has maintained his position near the top of the ladder of those who seek to destroy and celebrate pop music in equal measure. . . . Since his whole creative approach is literally singing along with songs he already wrote, this is one of Joey's boldest existential statements yet. Mr. Slice builds his songs slowly, in layers, with melodic focus shifting in and out quickly, and a naif quality recalling many of the bedroom pop genies of the last century." --Byron Coley

"This new duo LP, the first recorded by guitarist Tony Pasquarosa and drummer John Moloney (aka The Meatball Twins), is a masterpiece of lateral drift. Recorded as something like a tribute to the spirit of Farrell 'Little Rock' Sanders (also known as 'The Son' in the saxophonic Holy Trinity, along with Coltrane's 'The Father,' and Ayler's 'The Holy Ghost') there is no music here specifically recalling Sanders's work. But much of it seems to spring from a place that is illuminated by Sanders's artistic freedom, and his utilization of Middle Eastern symbols and motifs both inside his music and as part of his artistic statements. Tony's acoustic guitar playing makes me think of the work of India's great string master, Brij Bhushan Kabra. Raga-like twirls and filigree emerge like puffs of wet smoke, drifting away lazily in the sharp light of a winter's afternoon. And Moloney, who is best known for throwing down thunder with Sunburned, Chelsea Light Moving, Dino Jr, Caught On Tape and other Giants of Thud, matches Tony's mood effortlessly. Sweet light rhythm patterns are not something one often associates with Moloney's music, but his playing here with both percussion and wind show a very different side of his chops. At some points the overall sound recalls one of Sandy Bull's 'Blends' with Billy Higgins, but the music on My Pharaoh, My King is entirely its own trip. And it is a damn good one. Enjoy it with a meatball today!" --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 500.

RYSER, NINA I Hope All Your Dreams Come True LP
"This is the vinylization of the fourth solo album (originally released on cassette by Ramp Local) by Nina Ryser, she of the trio, Palberta. Palberta's releases have all been quite amazing -- ragged bags filled with musical lumps of the finest kind imaginable. Comparisons have been drawn (and quite rightly) between Palberta and units ranging from Kleenex to Aunt Sally to the Raincoats, so anticipation for this new album was kite-high and rising. I Hope All Your Dreams Come True veers from the rockist traits Palberta sometimes displays to a sound far more personal, electronics-spattered and specifically warped, momentarily reminding this listener of individual post-X Ray Spex projects by both Poly Styrene and Lora Logic. The small extra contributions by Gods Wisdom (vocals) and Gabe Adels (clarinet) do little to change the lonerist vibe. It all feels like music that has been bubbling inside a single head, without any plans to have its expressionism filtered through other brain waves. The album is interspersed with three variant and fragmentary covers of The Cradle's 'Abdicate,' recorded by Anina Ivory-Black (also of Palberta), but trying to figure out what these mean is above my pay grade. Suffice to say, they're interesting breaks in the continuity of an alternately smudgy and frantic set of tunes. There is also one track recorded back on 2001 that's like a Throwback Thursday snap for old school Brooklynites. I've listened to this a bunch now, and it's hard to describe exactly what the center of the project is about, but it's certainly chewy and delicious. So what the hell? Dig in!" --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

"In the 15 years since Thurston and I released the first Clarinette LP, Haze (E#60, 2002), Dan Vallor has continued to produce music unabated. Most of it has been released in very limited editions (on CDRs, cassettes, and lathes), but it has been a consistently cool flow of drone accrual and invention from a guy we still sorta think of as pop-oriented. Dan's best known work probably remains his archival activities inside the archives of the late songwriting genius, Scott Miller, although others may know him from his efforts to catalog the output of the NZ lathe underground. Clarinette is a long running solo project that began in the '80s, that went dormant until early in the 21st Century. The music is largely based on electric guitar huzz and hum, but there are plenty of sound events that pop up throughout the record, disturbing and enriching the surface with sproings, rasps, and groons. The pieces on The Now of Then are all fairly reflective, and probably more suitable to stoned drifting than freak dancing, but hey -- it never pays to second guess audience reaction. If you feel the urge to freak, so be it. Clarinette's music definitely twangs the freak register. Who are we to say you should remain seated?" --Byron Coley, 2017

HORSCH, MARVIN Fukushisha 12"
Marvin Horsch debuts on Berlin's Film with an EP of exquisitely produced, cinematic electronica. The Cologne based producer develops a colorful house with three playful compositions that draw as much on jazz and krautrock as more contemporary strains of alternative electronic music. "Omnisession#1" marries a beautifully shifting organ with live drum work before segueing into the glorious softness of "Sun After Rain", a rich synth solo drenched in tape hiss. Closer "Negobebo#2" wraps up the EP - an energetic, looping recording replete with staccato drum-machine strikes and warm, wet verbs carrying a spirited lead across its six minute duration.

2017 repress; originally reissued in 2006. Bearing all the aesthetic watermarks of a private-press country LP, Selda Ba?can's 1976 debut long-player is a stunning work of space-age Anatolian electronic, progressive protest-psych-folk-funk-rock; a delectable hybrid concoction, presented with the utmost authenticity and conviction, which has never been replicated or equaled in the decades since its recording. When Selda first released her long-awaited LP (the first of two confusingly eponymous titles released the same year), she was enduring/enjoying her halcyon time as one of Turkey's most politically outspoken popular folk singers. In the previous decade she had made a household name for herself as a traditional Anadolu protest singer with a spectacular emotive vocal capacity (for idle argument's sake, begging comparison to a Turkish Joan Baez). A figurehead and poetic driving force for a radical generation of politically motivated, creative revolutionaries, she sang raw, stripped-down folk songs with a yearning for political change and a heart-wrenching earnestness. On her debut LP, in a match made in psychedelic heaven, Selda's radical prose fuses with equally radical musical gestures from some of the most lauded musical mavericks, including Anadolu beat combo Mo?ollar (also known to a growing French audience as Les Mogol), popular backing band Dada?lar under the guidance of Anatolian rock stalwart Arif Sa?, and master electronic producer and pioneer Zafer Dilek. The bands were assembled at multiple sessions at Yeni Studios and the über-legendary Studio Elektronik, where the record was finally completed and mastered. Released in 1976 to equal parts critical acclaim and skepticism, the album smashed boundaries both lyrically and musically. It begs comparison to the second LP by post-folk sibling trio 3 Hür-El (GUESS 056LP), who used a balance of electronically treated saz and proto-polyphonic synthesizers to similar effect (exemplified here on tracks such as "Gitme" and "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz"). However, the fact that Selda was one of the few female voices to adopt the use of such cutting-edge techniques puts the LP in a league of its very own. Anatolian progressive rock has since gained popularity among DJs, producers, and record collectors as an unrivalled source for unique sounds rarely found in other genres of international music, and the artists involved in the recording of this LP, all of whom continued to record radical and experimental music, are considered the cream of the crop among Eastern psych aficionados. Includes two bonus tracks from the album sessions.

VA Pomegranates 2LP
2017 repress; originally released in 2009. Pomegranates collects some of the finest Persian pop songs ever recorded. Many are acknowledged classics within Iran and throughout the Iranian Diaspora. Some are obscure. This collection is a trove, ripe for discovery and rediscovery, and worthy of inclusion in the canon of idiosyncratic musical gems from the global south. Most of contemporary Iran's artistic and creative leanings, and its grapples with history and identity, are loosely and mystically conjoined and contested in memory. Iran is marked by the complex interplay of diverse constituencies, philosophies, and influences -- ethnic, religious, political, geopolitical, and historical. As in many other countries, the '60s and '70s were a time of tumult in Iran, bringing growth (via petrodollars) and freedom (under the banner of socioeconomic development) while exacerbating inequalities within the country. The music and voices that blossomed during those decades exemplify the turbulence and excitement of the age. It is worth recognizing these left-out and lost artists individually and as a group when considering the global happenings of '60s/'70s psych, rock, and folk, while exploring their influence and relevance since. This collection endeavors to recontextualize these songs from the realm of reminiscence, nostalgia, and memory into a specific and accessible narrative to share and relate within the universal musical gamut. It is for aficionados, the curious, and collectors alike. The recordings excavated here are highly sexual musings, voluble love songs, simple folk tunes, and subtle works of political protest. Includes performances by Zia, Mohammad Nouri, Mehrpouya, Googoosh, Kourosh Yaghmaei, Parva, Nooshafarin, Soli, Marjan, Sima Bina, Ramesh, and Dariush.

2017 repress. Finders Keepers Records presents Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski's previously unreleased electro/orchestral/experimental score for Andrzej Zulawski's surrealist 1981 horror classic, Possession. These 25 cues were written and recorded exclusively for the 1981 award-winning film starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil, but due to the progressive, stark and modernist nature of the finished film, less than half of them made it on to the actual director's cut - leaving many of the tracks on this package totally unheard outside of Korzynski's studio. The intended Possession score in its entirety marks an important axis in Korzynski's career where his various musical disciplines overlap. In one respect it marks his first forays into to synth-driven electronics and disco drum machines, while other tracks epitomize the well-honed techniques used in previous Zulawski scores, such as Third Part Of The Night (1971) and The Devil (1972), which rely on his inimitable orchestral arrangements and combination of clavinet, Rhodes, piano and electric guitar. This is the first time any of this music has been released outside of the film's original context and is packaged on CD, vinyl and conceptual green compact cassettes housed in miniature clamshell cases reminiscent of the film's original VHS release that briefly adorned UK video shops in the early 1980s (before being banned by over excited censors as one of the unproscecuted "video nasties" in the infamous 1983 tape cull). The important restoration of Korzynski's music aims to shed new light on the seldom manufactured productions of the composer whose vast cinematic catalogue warrants overdue global status alongside other golden era Eastern European composers such as Kryzstof Komeda, Jan Hammer and Zdenek Liska - not to mention the best of the French and Italian soundtrackers, such as Roubaix, Vannier and Nicolai. Duplicated and carefully remastered directly from Korzynski's original master tapes this album boasts the uninhibited studio experiments and retains the pre-cut ambience. Triggered by the 2015 edition of the Labor Sonor Festival "Translating Music" in Berlin, this split album between the Splitter Orchester and Felix Kubin offers two sides of the same coin, sometimes appearing like the rendering of an identikit picture. Taking up side A of the album, the Splitter Orchester remains faithful to its trademark technique of improvised composition. Their sound carries the spirit of artists like Jani Christou, John Cage, Franco Evangelisti, and the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, taking it further to the 21st century and strictly avoiding any scores. Specially built and prepared instruments add to the complexity of sound layers that slowly unfold, filling both an imaginary and physical space. Starting with a short piano loop, "Diagram 1" turns into a darker drone cut by crashing glasses, giving it an almost Hörspiele-like character. "Diagram 2" is a piece about transformation and metamorphosis which starts with airy highest tones that unravel into a sort of chanting before slowly descending downwards, reaching deeper realms of rumbling which culminate in brutal noise. On side B, Felix Kubin reinterprets these tracks, creating a physically closer and blunter atmosphere, which turns the distant dreamlike atmosphere of side A into a state of awakening. His two versions present a more systematic technique, counteracting the subconscious swarm composition of the Orchester. For his take on "Diagram 1", under the title "Lückenschere", he uses a sequenced sample of the piano loop which generates different dynamics, spiraling over sequencer variations. Much rawer and with aspects of minimal music is "Lichtsplitter", a pure electronic blueprint of "Diagram 2", that involves a black and white score drawing turned into sound with an eight-channel light scanner. The Splitter Orchester, founded in 2010, is a Berlin-based collection of internationally respected composer-performers which draws inspiration from many genres, most noticeably contemporary/improvised music. Splitter Orchester originates from the "Echtzeitmusik" scene, which emerged in Berlin in the mid-1990s - a locally based and globally networked experimental music scene and long-term platform for the exchange of artistic ideas.

PEKALA/KORDYLASINSKA Werke Fur Schlagzeug Und Elektroakustische Gerate LP
Werke Für Schlagzeug Und Elektroakustische Geräte ("Works for Percussion and Electro-Acoustic Devices") is the second album of the Polish percussion duo Mi?osz P?kala and Magda Kordylasi?ska. The compositions "Renaissance Gameboy #1" and "#2" (2011) by Felix Kubin were originally written for violin, saxophone, cello, piano, drums, and tape. The new versions arranged by the duo transport his pieces into the world of an extended percussion set, with marimba and vibraphone placed in the center. Additionally, several parts were recorded on tape. "Black Page #1" by Frank Zappa features close-miking recordings of guiro, reco-reco, temple blocks, and everyday objects like cups and computer. The pulse generated by dripping water and unusual percussive sets provide a new, intimate interpretation of Zappa's dynamic music. Minimal music has always had a special place in the hearts of the Polish duo. In "Vermont Counterpoint" (1982) by Steve Reich, they replace the orchestra (including flutes) with vibraphone, glockenspiel, marimba, and dulcimer. By including Reich's composition on this record, P?kala and Kordylasi?ska refer to their own musical roots. Repetitiveness can also be heard in a piece entitled "Smells Like Victory" (2016) commissioned to Thymme Jones, the founder of a band called Cheer Accident. The composition is written for marimba, vibraphone, two Chinese gongs, electronics, and includes choreography. "Modular #1" (2016) by Mi?osz P?kala completes the album. It's based on a rhythmic pattern generated by a modular synthesizer. Ongoing permeation of electronic and acoustic sounds with dynamic narrative creates a fertile ground for the musicians' expression as percussionists and at the same time gives them great pleasure as players. P?kala and Kordylasi?ska on the album: "This album is a next step in exploring the world of percussive instruments. We recorded it mainly out of urge to present our experience as musicians of the twenty first century surrounded by contemporary art." The album comes in a special sleeve with golden hotstamp printing designed by Polish musician and artist Macio Moretti.

A PULSE TRAIN Tactus Tempus LP
Geej Recordings is Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys and Ryan Smith of Caribou/Taraval/Jiaolong. Previously operating solely as the Canadian home for Jessy Lanza and Junior Boys, it is now prepping a number of original releases to startle and delight. First up is Tactus Tempus - a recording of two live performances of a graphic-based score from 1973 by a temporary "synth supergroup" featuring members of Caribou, Floating Points, Hot Chip, Junior Boys, and Simian Mobile Disco. Following shortly in no particular order is a conceptual LP of contemporary Canadian sound art, an EP of hardware based techno tools that hybridize the Canadian tundra and Detroit, in equal measure, and an album of modern healing gong music, recorded in one of the world's most advanced audio research laboratories. Tactus Tempus is a lost, graphic-based, experimental score by prolific composer Frank McCarty. The piece was originally conceived and performed in 1973 by McCarty's group Biome on five EMS Synthi synthesizers. By following a set of simple, yet subjective instructions the piece begins as a sparse moire pattern of bursts and tones before evolving in density and intensity as the players symbiotically interact guided only by the illustrated curve found on the score. This album features two new performances of the score featuring members of Caribou, Floating Points, Hot Chip, Junior Boys, Simian Mobile Disco, and friends. Gathering in a rare moment of collective down time in London in July 2016, spontaneously the group formed to perform the piece at Joe Goddard's basement studio. Each participant used a separate synthesizer or modular synthesizer system, and while the original slides were projected on the wall, the ensemble recorded two versions of the piece, each one recorded live in one take, lasting 15 minutes. One version is tonal, the other one of percussive timbre.

Since their previous album Ultraphoon (GR 2130 CD/LP, 2013), Esplendor Geométrico have performed more frequently than ever and in different countries and festivals (2016 marked their first time in the US and Russia). Meanwhile, a documentary feature film about the group launched in Madrid, Geometría del Esplendor, directed by a renowned Spanish director within the avant-garde cinema, José Ramón da Cruz. The film has just been premiered at the prestigious In-Edit festival in Barcelona, receiving an honorary award. Fluida Mekaniko was recorded during 2016 and contains 12 new tracks that, although they continue the line developed since Pulsión (2009), reference their most harsh and noisy sound of the '90s. Industrial neo-tribalism, where mechanical rhythms hypnotize, like mantras, inducing a trance - it highlights, already a distinctive feature of Esplendor Geometrico, the inclusion of voices and sonorities of African, Arab, and Asian music. CD version comes in a digipak.

MAN FRIDAY Love Honey, Love Heartache 12"
2017 repress. "As classic disco came bounding through the late '70s and into the electronically orientated sounds of the '80s, New York was one of the undisputed frontiers for the latest developments in dance music culture, nightclubs and the art of DJing. At the center of this seminal time for vinyl culture was a store called Vinylmania, set up by Charlie Grappone in the heart of Greenwich Village, Manhattan, just as the culture of 12-inch singles and promo copies was taking hold. From supplying Levan, Tony Humphries and many more with the latest imports to championing the emergence of house music in the mid-'80s, Grappone and his staff played a significant role in New York's own dance music story. Through the '90s and up until closing in 2007, Vinylmania was a store that catered to DJs from across the complex mixture of racial, social and sexual demographics that made up New York and its legendary nightlife. As the NYC Peech Boys came to an end, Man Friday became Larry Levan's newest production project. Fronted by Kofi Morny and Brodie Williams, their debut single 'Love Honey, Love Heartache' was released by Vinyl Mania in 1986 with Larry Levan at the helm of the mix. In the spirit of most dance music borrowing elements from other sources, 'Love Honey' was heavily inspired by another Paradise Garage & Loft classic from 1980 and its remix in 1981 by UK Outfit Funk Masters / TW Funkmasters. A dubbed out track big in the jazz-funk scene in the UK, it became a hit among underground deejays in both NYC & Chicago. No matter what list you look at. 'Love Honey' is always attached to Larry Levan's tenure at the Paradise Garage. All the elements of a garage track are here; dub echoes, synth basslines, percussions that linger, FX - that one can only dream of hearing on a Richard Long System - and an organ, because after all, they say the garage was like going to church."

VA James Brown's Funky People Part 2 LP
"As music fans know, James Brown wasn't just the greatest funk and soul singer the world has ever seen -- he was also a musical visionary and businessman, who surrounded himself with geniuses who made him better and pushed him further. From horn masters Maceo Parker and Pee Wee Ellis to vocalists Lyn Collins and Bobby Byrd, Brown was a musical A & R master, restless and always looking for the next big thing. Most times, that would manifest in the latest James Brown smash under his own name. But not always. His stable of talent was overflowing in the '60s and '70s, and, thankfully, the tape machine in his studio was always rolling. Originally released in 1988, during the era of hip-hop's golden age of sampling, it's no surprise that just about every note heard in this incredible collection has been used on not one but multiple rap classics. Which, at the time, was proof of Brown's (and his crew's) staying power. But we're almost three decades beyond those days now, and it has lost none of its musical potency. Diving deeper into the vaults than the also-incredible Part 1 of the Funky People series, there is not a weak track in the bunch. Moving beyond well-known JBs cuts, things get interesting from the get-go with Bobby Byrd's monumental groover 'I Know You Got Soul.' Hank Ballard and Marva Whitney also enter the fray, leading the way to Myra Barnes' emotional and powerful 'Message From The Soul Sisters (Parts 1 & 2)' and Lyn Collins' slow, smoldering cover of Isaac Hayes' 'Do Your Thing,' Politics even get the funky soul treatment, with Fred Wesley & The JBs' 'You Can Have Watergate But Gimme Some Bucks And I'll Be Straight' and 'I'm Paying Taxes, But What Am I Buying?' And it should not be overlooked that Maceo & The Macks' instrumental workout 'Soul Power '74' even features a proto-sampling snippet from MLK's 'I've Been To The Mountaintop' speech from 1968. This is another amazing collection of James Brown's funky friends, without one second of filler, brought to you as a glorious 2-LP gatefold by your friends at Get On Down."

"Toots & The Maytals' long and storied musical career spans all the way back to the dawn of ska. The group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. In The Dark is the group's second internationally released full length, the follow up to Funky Kingston. Like Funky Kingston, this release is in the pantheon of the greatest reggae albums of all time. Sure, that's not an official list, but you know it when you hear it. In addition to stand out cuts like the James Brown influenced '54-46 Was My Number' that had previously been issued as singles the group recorded all new material at Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston. One of those cuts is perhaps the most unique reggae covers of an American hit record. Reggae already had a storied history of Jamaican artist covering American R&B hits. But Toots & The Maytals went where others hadn't with a cover of John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads.' If you're only familiar with the original, well let's just say Toots Hibbert's beyond soulful vocals may make you forget you ever heard that other version of the song. Reissued in a lovingly re-printed version of the original LP sleeve, Get On Down now presents a superb reissue of a legendary piece of music history."

HELLKVIST, TOBIAS Kaskelot: Reissue + Remixes CD
Kaskelot is one of Tobias Hellkvist's little known releases which first appeared on Home Normal's sub-label Tokyo Droning back in 2011. Being a Japan-exclusive, it was incredibly limited and has long been sold out. After many years of discussing a reissue of Kaskelot, Home Normal decided to expand on the original, and developed a list of remixers to expand on the original pieces which have since been remastered. In Offthesky and Segue, are two dear friends of the label and also the two artists that opened the Tokyo Droning label. Many will know of the work of Chihei Hatakeyama. Other great artists such as Steve Pacheco, Simon Bainton, Porya Hatami, and Chris Herbert also provide remixes. The original EP was a departure for Tobias with a more direct melodic approach. Being improvised and recorded during one late night at Sundlaugin in Reykjavik, Iceland in 2011, Tobias directly recorded piano, vibraphone, pump organ, guitar, pedal steel, loops, and percussion for a more natural and open sound. These original four pieces have been remastered in conjunction with the remixes.

HELLKVIST, TOBIAS Vesterhavet (Extended) CD
Vesterhavet was the first proper full-length album from Swedish electro-acoustic composer Tobias Hellkvist since his two landmark releases on Home Normal - 2010's Evolutions and 2012's Everything Is Connected. Vesterhavet, in many ways, picks up where his last full-length left off almost four years ago. After self-releasing a five track version of the album in March 2016, Home Normal came together with Tobias and decided to provide a physical release of the album. This extended issue of Verterhavet partners the reissue of Kaskelot (HOMEN 076CD) perfectly as it highlights the breadth of his work, from the beautifully direct melodies of Kaskelot, to the massive sounding layers of subtle melody that lie in Vesterhavet.

HAWGOOD, IAN Love Retained CD
Home Normal label head Ian Hawgood describes recording Love Retained: "Love Retained is a series of mostly piano sketches I made which I had intended for collaboration. The recordings are simply tracked to cassette, and contain no editing or mastering, so you know, filled with 'mistakes'. They are pieces I found really enjoyable to make, and I have increasingly enjoyed looping on low levels at night, or when the mind wonders/wanders. They are incomplete and yet it feels right for me to give this to friends, family, and anyone else that this connects to in some way. The incompletion is a beautiful and freeing thing. This release marks my first and last solo release on the label I founded with my friend Ben [Jones] many moons ago, and also marks me fully stepping down from the label after returning for a bit in 2016."

Éternité Retrouvée (2011) was first released as a cassette on Norway's Fossbrenna Creations. Stripped to the bare essentials of drum machine, analog synth, and vocals rendered in acres of sepulchral space, the three-track EP draws listeners into a flawlessly realized sphere of dark influence where minimalist, desiccated harmonies and bony rhythms are embedded against unfathomably bombed out, maximalist backdrops - what most would define as unmistakably gothic.

After Leibniz focused on distorted grime and jungle influenced techno on his last records, he dives into deeper fields with his first EP for Hundert. Over the time Leibniz has obsessively collected Youtube videos that serve him as an audio sample library. Be it a review of a lawnmower or people singing to their pets, every track features bits and pieces of sound taken from these videos. By editing and cutting the original material the sounds get implemented into a new musical context. House and references to contemporary hip hop beats form the skeleton for four hazy out-of-the-ordinary cuts.

TIERSEN, YANN La Valse des Monstres CD
2017 repress of this 2012 remastered reissue; originally released in 1995. With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become sought after as both a solo artist and soundtrack composer. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz, and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen's deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. Tiersen first became popular outside his native France for his score to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 film Amélie, but this was no overnight success; Tiersen had been working for years before the film brought him international acclaim. Tiersen's first album, La Valse des Monstres, includes several pieces composed for short films and plays, and introduces Tiersen's delicate but deeply emotional style featuring intricate arrangements of instruments as varied as toy piano, banjo, harpsichord, melodica, and carillon, as well as piano and guitar.

TIERSEN, YANN Rue Des Cascades CD
Yann Tiersen has sold hundreds of thousands of records worlds wide and even more soundtracks. Since 2009 he has been focused on playing live, with 270 shows spread over three world tours, which touched every continent. Tiersen presents a re-mastered edition of his second album 1996's Rue Des Cascades. With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become a sought-after composer, not only for his soundtrack work, but in his own right. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen's deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. Tiersen became popular outside his native country for his score to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 film Amélie. Born in Brest in Brittany, on June 23, 1970, Tiersen was raised in Rennes and made a name for himself as one of the star pupils at his local conservatory. Tiersen studied violin and piano from the ages of six to fourteen, and eventually trained to be a conductor. However, Tiersen rebelled against his classical training and, inspired by the likes of Joy Division and the Stooges, played guitar with several local post-punk-influenced bands during his later teenage years. At the same time, Tiersen was also composing soundtracks for short films and accompaniment for plays. Several of these pieces ended up on his first album, La Valse des Monstres (IDA 001CD/LP), in 1995 and introduced his delicate but deeply emotional style, and which also featured intricate arrangements incorporating instruments as varied as toy piano, banjo, harpsichord, melodica, and carillon, as well as piano and guitar. If La Valse des Monstres and its follow-up, 1996's Rue Des Cascades, were slow burners, Tiersen's third album, 1998's La Phare (IDA 003CD/LP), met a different fate; its single, "Monochrome," which was sung by French pop star Dominique A., was a radio hit and propelled the album, and Tiersen, to mainstream success in France.

Following 2013's Minuit Dans Tes Bras, Michel Cloup is back with another instalment of his personal history - this time in a duo with the drummer Julien Rufié (Eryn Non Dae). Eleven tracks with the title Ici Et Là-Bas ("Here and Down There") which leaves little doubt as to the album's subject. "I stayed in Rome twice in 2012 for a residency and for a concert at the Villa Medici. It was a year and a half after the death of my mother who was Italian. I was still totally in mourning and really pretty upset. A bunch of memories came back to the surface at a time when I had lost a lot of my bearings. I hadn't finished writing Minuit Dans Tes Bras but I knew I'd found the starting point for the record after that." Over the whole album, Michel explores the many paths his own history has taken and, as is usually the case in his work, uses this to create a universal story which is at the heart of current events. "I realized that what I was going through, this late realization of my dual origins and the way I felt then had a resonance with certain events at the time. So I decided to tell my story in parallel with more general ideas, trying to hook up the personal and the political. The whole thing is a kind of fragmented scenario." The compositions are crystal clear and without embellishments although more arranged and less minimalist than on the two previous albums. The record as a whole sounds more rock in style and more direct particularly because of the playing of Julien Rufié. The songs are relatively short apart from the last two tracks where some Michel's most touching lyrics ever appear. "I wanted to break away from the monolithic side of the first two albums as a duo and move towards something more broken up and varied. Working with Julien gave me a new lease of life, new energy and quicker tempos. Ici Et Là-Bas is a little like my musical identity card and in any case it reflects all my obsessions - rock, French 'chanson', spoken-word, groove, experimentation, psychedelia, power or gentleness. I wanted it to be wild and with no barriers in the spirit of 'Check Your Head' by the Beastie Boys or 'Bubble and Scrape' by Sebadoh."

ZERO San Francisco CD
Ozkär Krapö on Zëro's fifth album San Francisco: "The first demo by Zëro - the reincarnation of Bästard!, a group which had its origins in the Deity Guns (initiators of the French post-rock movement) - is already ten years old and San Francisco is their fifth album. A red album- just like there have been white albums or black albums. A major album in a discography, in the history of a group. The style is the same as can be recognized in all the records but the total break with the past is fascinating. As is the image of the cover which shows three individuals sitting on a long seat with their faces erased, just merged together by the stains on the decrepit wall behind them. It's like a reverse image of the Greek Hydra - or rather of the Cerberus, the three-headed dog and guardian of Hell - with three bodies, three exceptional musicians who blend together and bloom into one sole head, one sound. Zëro now play as a trio and the group has gained in coherency. One after the other, the tracks flow fluidly together as a whole despite the complexity of the arrangements and the multiple cinematographic or musical references, with both sides of the record containing a mix of contained violence and tense atmospheres. All through this 35-minute trip, it is a pleasure to let yourself go taking in the explosive outbursts which have always been part of the group's identity and strike the ear in the same way as a stroboscope pervades the eye. But what is surprising about San Francisco is the tracks which are almost pop (in the best sense of the term, as The Feelies or Wire were immense pop groups) with their dynamic faux laidback nonchalance make you want to jump in the car with the radio on full blast and speed down an ocean road. Finally, cutting up, resolving or enhancing these tracks, the album's unity is above all derived from its passages of contained tension which are both psychedelic and noisy with menacing atmospheres harking back to their last appearances as a trio during readings by Virginie Despentes. Finally, it is perfectly natural that the trip should end in 'San Francisco', the title track of the album - a song which you would like to turn into a locked groove to indefinitely prolong this moment in which all the tension is resolved, stretched out and absorbed in a feeling of serenity and fullness."

GABLE Jolly Trouble CD
GaBLé are back and the great big joyful mess which accompanies the group will leave no-one indifferent. This is a full-on first contact, a total break with the context and almost fascinating - a perfect summary in fact of this absolutely whacked-out new analog pop opus full of the live energy which characterizes the trio onstage. JoLLy TrouBLe is more or less a translation of the French phrase "un beau bordel" and moves on further from the collage, DIY or chaotic rock style GaBLé have been known for in recent years. Following MuRDeD (2013), Gaëlle, Mathieu, and Thomas are back with music which is superbly thought-out, composed, produced and interpreted. These songs have a strong identity which makes them recognizable at first listen but their prime quality is to systematically throw listeners off balance. It's inventive and personal music which only groups of Gablé's calibre can produce. GaBLé also have the advantage of knowing how to put themselves in danger and also of knowing the best people to work with, as around a dozen friends - musicians, backing singers, technicians - were invited to exchange, suggest and talk out ideas for the record. JoLLy TRouBLe is the type of work which is full of humility while remaining both complex and ambitious. Rock, folk, song, jazz and of course electronic glitch or analog, even experimental music, JoLLy TRouBLe is all of these at once. Of course, let's not forget the term "alien" when talking about GaBLé's way of composing and interpreting these highly varied but coherent songs. There are thirteen songs whose subtle arrangements (clarinet, saxophone, flute, marimba, trumpet, machines and synthesizers plus all sorts of backing vocals) nonetheless highlight the combo's immediately attractive side and vocal talents. Here GaBLé are equally at home with sunny, benevolent pop ("On Purpose" and the first single "Tropicool") as with bursts of noise ("How Long"), psychedelic slow burns ("Porti"), punk riffing ("Marvoof") or faux ballads which are crazed but still really touching ("Youngsters", "Thinging"). Yes, JoLLy TRouBLe really is a truly beautiful mess, a truly beautiful record by a truly beautiful group enhanced by a truly beautiful gang of friends. The type of record you don't hear every day. Artwork by Angela Dalinger.

Chapelier Fou, aka Louis Warynski, is well known today for his exemplary discography: three albums - 613 (2010), Invisible (2012), and Deltas (IDA 098LP, 2014), three EPs - Darling, Darling, Darling... (2009), Scandale ! (2009), and Al Abama (2011) - and two 12" of remixes Protest EP (2014) and Fuses (IDA 098-2EP, 2015). Since the very beginning of his career, the French composer's songs always stimulated the imagination of his listeners. Many artists, theater, and movie directors or actors have asked to use his songs or requested commissioned works. "Les Métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia" is in this very specific category of commissioned work by Chapelier Fou. The mini-album Kalia is the very first instalment to be released as a record. In spring 2014, Béatrice Lartigue and Cyril Diagne from French artists' collective Lab212 contacted Chapelier Fou while he was finalizing his third album Deltas. The two invited him to work on a digital art installation project, "Les Métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia" the graphic work of which was entirely generated by code and entered in a DevArt (the famous firm offering databases for developers) contest. The project was then selected by Google to be presented at the "Digital Revolution" exhibition at the famous Barbican Centre of London alongside works from Björk, Will I Am, and Amon Tobin, among others. The nine songs presented on Kalia are striking because of their effectiveness and conciseness (each track is just over two minutes). The writing approach offered here is more radical than Louis's previous work. Each song is based on a simple idea from which the artist extracts its maximum potential to give a stripped down result. This enables listeners to get closer to the seductive inner substance of his work - a unique groove and sense of rhythm, simple and haunting melodies plus the ability to fill the sound space whatever the limits imposed. Above all, Kalia shows brilliantly that Chapelier Fou's music is just not a well-written mix of electronic music with violin. It is the breeding ground for research, experimentation and cohesiveness. It is an inspiration for its creators, for listeners and for the creative people using it in their own work. It is an interaction, a dialogue and perpetual questioning.

Ici d'Ailleurs present a remastered version of Trupa Trupa's third album Headache, originally released in 2015 on CD and cassette via Blue Tapes And X-Ray Records. Trupa Trupa play rock, come from Poland, and consist of four musicians in a guitars-bass-drums-keyboard-vocals line-up. The story of Headache would perhaps have ended there if a certain Sasha Frere-Jones, one of today's most prominent and influential critics, hadn't written in the Los Angeles Times that "one of the best rock bands doing business now is from Gdansk, Poland." While on a trip to Poland, Stéphane Grégoire, label manager and founder of the Ici d'Ailleurs label, first met Trupa Trupa at a concert by another Polish talent, Stefan Wesolowski. The group gave him a copy of Headache which he put straight on his turntable on return to France. He was taken at once and fell straight in love. Soon enough, the reactions were coming in quick. Everyone thought, like Sasha Frere-Jones, that this really is one of the best rock albums of recent years. Trupa Trupa synthesizes what is best in the genre since the early '90s - from Pavement to Slint via The Black Angels - with unstoppable, spontaneous compositions with a real freshness. But it is primarily as an album, a true thoughtful and constructed set of 11 tracks which cannot be separated from each other, that Headache really comes into its own. The third album from a band that nobody saw coming, has been deemed a rare pearl by those who have had the chance to listen. "One of the best rock bands doing business now is from Gdansk, Poland. The lead singer of Trupa Trupa is poet Grzegorz Kwiatkowski, who sings (and speaks, sometimes) in English. The band recalls a less woozy version of Dungen, another band who know their '60s psychedelia but don't sound like thirsty revivalists. Kwiatkowski leans into the conversational loopiness of Syd Barrett and the band flowers behind him. Beauty and intensity get equal space here." --Sasha Frere-Jones, Los Angeles Times "This is incredible work. The result is their first moment of true greatness." --The Quietus "It's 2015, everyone, and did you hear? Bands are back in a big way, and Trupa Trupa is hands-down among the very best of 'em." --Tiny Mix Tapes

Mark Barrott embodies elements of world music and a more poignant mood with Music For Presence: "I noticed the mood change at La Torre, as the post sunset nocturne started to get longer and longer. It made me realize that this was a different kind of music. . . . it was a feeling I was very keen to explore once September finished and I headed back into the studio. A different feeling to the sunset haze of long drawn-out summer days, one inspired by the golden colors of Autumn and the neon cityscapes of Tokyo and Osaka at night."

Shelter is Alan Briand, a young Parisian producer with a strong melodic center producing a sound that pulls on the zouk, the Afro, the Balearic and the ambient palette. Zon Zon Zon is only his fifth release and his first mini-album, following the series on International Feel that delivered material from Len Leise (IFEEL 049LP, 2016), Wolf Muller & Cass. (IFEEL 054LP, 2016), and CFCF (IFEEL 051LP, 2016). International Feel first met Shelter on a trip to Paris a few years back. It sounds like a story from a Nick Hornby novel, but there's a record shop in Paris called L'International Records, run by a guy called Dave, who has a group of young French DJs, producers, and promoters that visit the store, hang out, and buy and listen to music - a story no doubt currently being repeated throughout the world as new generations immerse themselves in the culture. Shelter is a producer who has sucked up all that he has been hearing around him for a number of years and is now producing a quality sound, pulling on the exotic. The seven tracks on this mini-album are taken from an extensive pool of Shelter's melodic magic. Some people lead on the beats, some on the production, but Alan focuses on the melody, with the beat closely tied in as support. "Señor Zalla" starts the album with an Afro vibe, closely followed by the zouk-style of "Zon Zon Zon" and "Port-au-Coeur"'s mellow Balearic tones, as Shelter twists nature's sounds into his own sonic world. "Bucolica", an upbeat wonder of a track, turns to the ambient mantra of "Courant Rouge" and its distant cousin "Courant Bleu", a classic rhythmic Balearic piece with syncopated melody and delayed drums. "La Volière" (the French can make even "bird cage" sound beautiful) brings the album to a close with a smile in the mind's eye. Zon Zon Zon is universal. It could easily have been created in Ibiza or Canada, Australia or Africa. It was in fact recorded at Paris, where Shelter forged beauty through the sounds of nature and uncovers a wisdom in its simplicity. Expect good things from Alan. Here's the first chapter. 180 gram vinyl.

The first a sentimental ballad "Your Eyes Are Dreaming" and a Latin beat tune "Tell Me Darling". His song-writing skills were much in so much demand, and his popularity of such importance, that when Chris Blackwell went to London in 1962 to set up his record company, he took his top balladeer Jackie with him. This would pay dividends when a UK group Blackwell had signed called The Spencer Davis Group went on to release two of Jackie's compositions "Keep On Running" and "Somebody Help Me", which topped the British charts in 1966. With Mister Peaceful, Kingston Sounds have compiled some of Jackie Edwards's finest songs - all cool tunes in different reggae styles but all sung to perfection. CD version includes five bonus tracks.

Repressed. D?WN's, aka Dawn Richard, last album Blackheart (2015) was FACT Magazine's #1 album of the year. It was in the Best Album of 2015 charts by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Vogue, LA Times, Spin, Elle, Noisey and The Guardian, who called it "the most ambitious and revelatory album of 2015." Her first single of 2016, Not Above That (LOC 027EP), has garnered just as much success and she followed it with a series of show-stealing shows at SXSW (at the Pitchfork, Spin, FACT and Hype Hotel showcases). She also collaborated with Kingdom on "Honest", which received Pitchfork's Best New Track. With future collaborations in the works, she looks set to continue breaking down barriers of music, performance and technology. Redemption strikes the perfect balance between future-facing electronic music (with production from Machinedrum and Noisecastle III) and the music of D?WN's New Orleans upbringing, bound together by an untouchable approach to songwriting and flawless vocal range. The final part in a trilogy that started with Goldenheart (2013) and continued with Blackheart, it represents her most focused, complete album yet. Features contributions by Trombone Shorty and PJ Morton.

ASHLEY, ROBERT Atalanta (Acts of God) 2CD
1997 release. Originally released on Lovely Music in 1985. Robert Ashley makes use of the story of Atalanta - a royal princess, discarded by her family, who was raised by the animals to become the fastest-running human, and who was later reclaimed by her father to marry her off for dynastic purposes - to present the character aspects of the "successful suitor". These three aspects of character are presented in the opera as anecdotes about three extraordinary men of our times: Max Ernst (surrealist painter), Willard Reynolds (shaman storyteller), and Bud Powell (composer pianist). The genius of these three men can be taken to represent three aspects of the opera itself: image, narrative and music. In the imaginary setting of Atalanta (Acts of God), one companion (singer) reminds her of her excellence (the "Odalisque" arias); another recommends to her the characteristics of excellence in men (the "Character Reference" arias); and a third amuses her with anecdotes, as if told to her by each of the three men (the "Anecdotes"). Personnel: Robert Ashley - solo voice; with Thomas Buckner, Carla Tato, Jacqueline Humbert - voices; "Blue" Gene Tyranny - keyboards; Paul Shorr - mixing, electronics. Recorded live at the Teatro Olimpico in Rome; Sung in English and Italian.

1999 release. Theme features three works from Alvin Lucier. Music for Piano with Magnetic Strings is a work in which the strings of a piano sound by themselves. Several EBows (small electromagnets used primarily with electric guitars) which would cause the piano strings to vibrate and sound are placed on the strings of the piano. The pianist works from a prose score which describes the process and suggests she freely position and reposition five EBows on the piano strings, creating strands of sounds of varying density and texture. Theme features a poem of John Ashbery's set to music. Lucier didn't want to violate the flow of the words of the poem by fragmentation or any other cut-up method. The stanzas seemed musical enough just as they were and he wanted the audience to hear the poem more or less in its pristine state, so, working intuitively and by ear, he wrote out the poem for four readers in the order it was written, repeating words and phrases, overlapping and superimposing them in various ways. To "set" the poem, he inserted microphones into the mouths of various vessels, including a small milk bottle, a sea shell, a vase and an empty ostrich egg, to pick up the words as they were sounding inside the vessels. Theme is performed by: Sam Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Jacqueline Humbert, and Joan La Barbara. For Music for Gamelan Instruments, Microphones, Amplifiers and Loudspeakers, Lucier wanted to make a work for Javanese gamelan, but was wary of using someone else's music in his own work. It wasn't until he started imagining the bowl-shaped bonangs of the gamelan orchestra more as resonant chambers to be sounded than objects to be struck, that Lucier felt he could make a work for gamelan that he could call his own. During the performance four players place bonangs of various sizes over microphones, creating feedback, the pitch of which is determined by the shape and size of the bowl and the resonant characteristics of the room. Three gender players strike the bars on their metallaphones, searching for the pitches of the feedback strands. Since it is virtually impossible that a strand of feedback will match exactly a pitch on any fixed-pitch instruments, audible beats - bumps of sound which occur as sound waves coincide - occur. The closer the tuning, the slower the beating.

KAILIN Fracture LP
Beneath's Mistry label explores post-club dimensions with Kailin's debut album featuring eight tracks of hazy hooks, engulfing subs, and grimy thizz rent in acres of space. Beneath describes it perfectly as "uplifting whilst also being dread filled..." Much of the appeal of electronic music lies within the listener's ability to divine meaning from abstraction, often according to their own cultural conditioning. Kailin's enigmatic debut album of suggestive, dread-filled atmospheres and elusive, noise-sculpted rhythms, collected on Fracture, is essentially fueled on this notion and perfectly resonates with the aesthetics and ideals conveyed by Beneath's Mistry label. Making up the first LP release on Mistry after seven club-hinging EPs from the likes of Batu (MISTRY 005EP, 2015), Laksa (MISTRY 004EP, 2015), Chevel (MISTRY 003EP, 2014), and Webstarr (MISTRY 002EP, 2014), Kailin's Fracture occupies an introspective middle-distance between perceptions of club and ambient modes of reception by disintegrating dancefloor structures into a near-metaphysical presence with mercurial, vaporizing gestures. Like Schrödinger's cat in a bassbin, it's neither or, and possibly both at the same time, depending on your perception. This paradoxical sense of simultaneous detachment and immersion perhaps stems from the album's production; originally sketched out in a two month haze, then left to steep for much longer, before the collection's nuances and conflicting elements began to reveal themselves in remarkable formations such as the out-of-body-experience electro flex of "Circling" or the midnight quantum jazz dynamics of "Gimp", or a really big highlight in the teetering, polymetric ambient pop of "Respite". No doubt it's a fascinating and quintessential turn for Mistry, one which lives up to the label's name and its roots in the duppie dread effect of UK soundsystem culture, yet never previously revealed by Beneath's imprint in such absorbing and heady style before now. RIYL: Lee Gamble, Arca, Vangelis. Mastered by Matt Colton. Edition of 500.

DARK SKY Kilter/Acaica 12"
The London duo Dark Sky return with two highly effective techno tracks featuring dark and roaring basslines at the center. "Kilter" is a rhythm-driven club anthem, featuring a sweeping bassline that nods to classic Dark Sky. "Acacia" opens with ethereal synth pads before giving way to an onslaught of low-end goodness before slowly revealing building percussion which finally climaxes in all its thumping glory. Dark Sky's first release since Voyages (2015) may in parts seem like quite a functional affair, but it is only a tiny glimpse at what their forthcoming album Othona (MONKEY 074CD/LP) has in store.
PRICE: $28.50
Having already unleashed a considerable amount of collaborative magic with the Planetary Funk: 22 Light Years series of remix EPs (MOTE 046EP, MOTE 047EP, 2016), Luke Slater upped the ante with six full sides worth of material, all of them injecting the spirit of classic Planetary Assault Systems into new sonic organisms. Using motifs from past P.A.S. successes, Luke Slater and his cohorts join here to make something radical and revitalizing: too cohesive for a "compilation album" and with too much autonomy granted to the guest remixers to be a simple "tribute". Three of the tracks in the program are intense and captivating live re-workings from Slater himself, hurtling from the speakers with an apparent minimum of post-production polish and an optimal level of buzzing energy. While this on its own would make for a compelling listen, the album is also laden with contributions from an international assembly of electronic soul controllers (to wit: Marcel Fengler, Psyk, Lucy, Slam, Octave One, Function, and Kamikaze Space Programme). Fengler kicks off the proceedings with an ecstatic and lustrous rework of "Twelve", a melodic sunrise joining a synth pad massage to a locked-in and systematic rhythm. Psyk's own interpretation of the same track preserves the same insistence but applies it to a completely different time and place, driving the listener through a wilderness of coded signals and an ambiguous repetition of the title that sounds like it could be as much a warning as an indicator of progress. KSP's version of "Function 6" gradually builds a cyborg leitmotif from an overdriven martial beat and epileptic machine breakdowns. Sequencing this with Octave One's "Booster" rework is an ideal choice, as the squared-away EBM/electro-funk sequences and flanged hi-hats seem to refer to a different phase in the life cycle of the same machine. Function's "Diesel Drudge," on the other hand, moves from the machine world into a totally oneiric world typified by backwards-masked/time-traveling voices and a thick strobe-lit haze. Lucy's re-envisioning of "Surface Noise" is a no-nonsense tantric exercise in shedding preconceptions and inhibitions. Rounding out the collection is Steve Bicknell's "Raid" version - a breathing mosaic of rhythmic pulses and clattering objects - and Slam's characteristically intense modification of "Temporary Suspension," whose low-end sequences continually bubble and seethe yet never completely boil over. Comes on 180 gram clear vinyl; includes a download card.

When David Greenberger first embarked on what has become a life-long journey, drummer Chris Corsano was not yet five years old! In 1979, after graduating from art school in Boston, Greenberger took the job of activities director at the Duplex Nursing Home, an all-male elder care facility in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and began collecting the stories, poems and music reviews of its aged patients for what became his Duplex Planet project, an undertaking that would eventually encompass nearly 200 issues of a digest-sized magazine, a series of CDs, books, comics, and performance art. Eventually the nursing home closed, but David has remained engaged in what has become the central art form of his life: the "art of conversation." Three decades later, Chris Corsano set in motion the project present here. With guitarist and banjo player Glenn Jones, a longtime friend of both Greenberger and Corsano, the three began recording in Greenberger's living room in upstate New York. In just three days, with no advance preparation, they recorded the 28 tracks that make up An Idea In Everything. Corsano improvised, Jones invented new tunings for his banjo and guitar on the fly, and Greenberger selected and read stories in direct response to the music. Everything was spontaneous and live. Despite the dark and sad feeling of some of the texts (dealing with aging, memory loss, etc.), there is also humor, joy and grit. The resulting is a rollercoaster of emotions, a glittering patchwork of sonic atmospheres and an oral encyclopedia on dozens of subjects. David Greenberger on the release: "When newcomers hear that I have regular conversations and interviews with elderly people, they assume I collect oral history. What that assumption implies is that when one grows old we become solely a repository of our past. From the start, my mission has been to offer a range of characters who are already old, so that we can get to know them as they are in the present, without celebrating or mourning the loss of who they were before." Recorded by Chris Corsano in Greenwich, NY, February 2013; Mixed by Matthew Azevedo and Glenn Jones in Jamaica Plain, MA; Mastered by Matthew Azevedo at Endless Audio, Providence, RI. Illustration by Gwénola Carrère. Co-released with David Greenberger's Pel Pel label.

Todd Terje continues to buck trends and shuck conventions, presenting here two tip-top reworks of an original that remains unreleased at the time of this release. Four Tet's remix picks out a particularly jazzy path to a distant dancefloor dimension, with a surge of spectral arps, swelling sine waves, shuffling percussion, and the sweet syncopation of off-beat piano, before the Text founder unleashes a booming bassline. Prins Thomas's remix evokes vintage R&S, Dutch electro, and Sheffield bass, pairing an infectious breakbeat with full-bodied subs and a particularly X-rated bassline while fluttering keys blur into the nebulous swirl of dopamine-drenched vocals.

" 'Wherein we come upon three visceralists who have been collaborating for years - innumerable instances in a roulette wheel of settings -- finally shacking up in a studio and fashioning a proper trio record. Glory be. Let's listen in-- 'These.' It's a phrase that never gets started, and an apt title for this record, which right off bolts from the barn and burns so brightly it nearly gets away from you by the time you're done twisting your head around looking for whoever it was that left the door open. 'He asked me when I planned to come back. Always, I said.' Nace's guitar mines savage depths, egging on the propulsive swing of Flaherty and Corsano. The results are as beastly as the heart itself. Swing. Bounce. Joust. Jab. Uppercut. Flutter. Wink. Sneer. They all play with anguish and ecstatic rupture -- the frustrating joy of pushing an instrument to its limits, fashioning a necessary and brutal needlepoint. They move with all the otherworldly elegance and mania of moths at a lamp show. The music asks no specific questions, but wrenches open a space for all manner of questions -- this is one of art's most vital functions! It deals in shades, no matter how sharp the apparent angle. Check out the second track on the first side: the solemn bells of Bill's guitar signal not so much a funeral, but a new dawn after a tragedy. Flaherty's saxophone sounds innocent, almost tentative at first, but as Chris' drums chime in, Paul starts to wrench the fabric loose. The track builds into a fierce and alien vista, charting a territory all its own -- a simmering judgement. It becomes hard to talk about. Didn't you ever try to eat your own tail in the midday sun? No? These three, whose veins are coursing straight through with a nuanced emotional lexicon and the smarts to harness it, have given us a record that expands potential with each listen." --Matt Krefting, Holyoke, MA 2017

Trans-Oceanic, the long-anticipated record from Miami's Spam Allstars, is chock-full of tropical electro space-funk spiced with a heady dose of Cuban flavors. The six-piece Spam Allstars have been at the forefront of Miami's culturally blended, highly creative musical scene for twenty years. Formed by the multi-talented Andrew Yeomanson, aka DJ Le Spam, to create electronic descargas (Latin jam sessions), the band's unique sound was incubated in a live setting while in residence in the Cuban-themed nightclub Hoy Como Ayer on Calle Ocho in Miami's Little Havana. Le Spam and his Allstars take their inspiration from the fabled improvisational Cuban jam sessions of the 1950s and '60s, deftly mixing them with funk, dub, electro, rock and hip-hop elements that reflect the city's multi-cultural makeup. Through the course of six albums, international touring, and interesting collaborations with the likes of Phish side project Vida Blue, New World Symphony, and Rumberos de la 8, this cosmically jamming dance ensemble seamlessly combines various traditions and enlightens in ways you won't find anywhere else. Trans-Oceanic offers up a tasty batida (tropical fruit shake) of funk, rumba, charanga (a traditional old-school Cuban dance orchestra with flute and violin lineup), electro beats, fat bass, and bouncy brass that leads to relentless grooving throughout the proceedings. With its unique instrumental combo of organic and electronic, the Spam sound (expanded here to a nine-piece here) manages to weave together seemingly disparate elements into a seamless whole. The party-rocking title opener sets sail into wild synth, tasteful djembe, and a hand-clapping groove with a sweetly melodic front line of horns and flute. "Cosquilla" (Tickle) is a sexy Afro-Cuban rumba-inspired number with humorous Spanish lyrics, kept in place by funk drums and a rock-steady montuno vamp played on Cuban tres guitar buoyed by some deep pulsing synth-bass. "Ruby Carat" is a funk-charanga hybrid aided by a rumba section and gorgeous trumpet, underpinned by the timbales of Tomás Díaz. The centerpiece is the cosmic R&B number "Satellite" where saxophonist A.J. Hill pulls double duty on soulful vocal around the funky synth and fuzzy guitar solo. "Around The Track" is a great slice of Afro-funk with some rock axe to make it bristle with guitar swagger. The violin is back on the electro-soul cut "La Concha", with some countryish guitar stylings just to flip the script a little. Cover artwork by Francesco Lo Castro. Includes download card with a bonus track.

CAT #: PIAS 39291811LP
Repressed; double LP version. Comes in a gatefold sleeve. Pias present a reissue of Sunset Mission, the 2000 album from Germany's doom jazz cult band Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. They are loved by musicians Mike Patton (Faith No More) and Stephen O'Malley (SunnO). For fans of SunnO, OM, Max Richter, Fennesz."The substance we are seeking here lies beyond the bare bones of fact, the when and the where (founded in 1988, Mülheim an der Ruhr) or personnel and instruments. The story is more than the sum of its facts. Mysteries may very well lurk here or there along the way. What keeps the final two founder members going after all this time? Do Morten Gass and Robin Rodenberg have skeletons locked in their closets? How dearly we would we love to know the answer to that one, alas the most beautiful puzzles tend to remain unsolved. Including their debut Gore Motel (1994), Bohren & Der Club Of Gore have amassed an impressive eight long players... Strange as it may seem, there is a uniform consistency to their reception. Whatever the band does, critiques are unfailingly positive, yet repetitious. Consider the arrival of Christoph Clöser in 1997, by way of illustration. When he joined the group, his saxophone replaced the departing Reiner Henseleit's guitar as one of the defining instruments in the band. This was arguably the sharpest break in their sound to this day and a significant marker in terms of the band's reverence for Dutch instrumentalists Gore (the clue is in the name), whose repetitive riffs paved the way for how the guitar would be deployed in a post-everything future... Similarly conspicuous by their absence in the Bohren chronicles are the numerous instruments which they added to the mix. The introduction of choirs at least had a clear visual impact. Since Thorsten Benning left at the end of 2015, the band has continued as a trio, sharing shifts on the drums. A decrease in personnel was conversely accompanied by quantum leaps forward in the group's musical development - or more precisely, minor adjustments triggered major effects. The music of Bohren & Der Club Of Gore opens up remarkable rooms of association, from a warm burrow to a pristine secret lodge, from a dusky woodland tavern to a smoky quayside dive... These sinister crackling songs are invitations to secrete oneself in darkness." --Lars Brinkman.

VA Love, Peace & Poetry - African Psychedelic Music LP
2017 repress; LP version, full color gatefold sleeve. "This is volume eight of the Love, Peace & Poetry series. Many records on this compilation are from South Africa, but it also covers countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. As in the other six volumes of this series the tracks are only taken from rare LP's and some fetches prices over $1500 for an original. The biggest problem with original records from African countries are finding them in good condition. The turntables where very very poor and the hot and humid climate does not preserve records very good. Sometimes termites eaten away complete record covers. In addition earthquakes, sandstorms, floods, wars, revolutions and other heavy influences made it hard to release albums and keep them in good shape since the late 60's. All this makes this compilation very special beside the amazing good music. The Bands: Abstract Truth / A-Cads / Flames / Freedoms Children / McCully Workshop / Third Eye / Those Five / Suck / Otis Waygood Ten Light Claps / Wildebeest / Mack Sigis Porter / Blo / Ofege / Quentin E Klopjaeger / Rikki Ililonga / Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family.

Amsterdam-based Scott Franka's music encompasses influences from dub and dark techno to classic drum-computer and synth-heavy house, taking cues from Detroit, Chicago and the UK. The Gym is his solo debut. "The Gym" starts off with sweet, melancholic chords and 808 hats. You won't be able to keep your head steady. "Toenail" is up next, and its undeniable groove and incredible amalgamation of synths and strings make for an absolute early hours melter. "Sorry" sees Franka knock it out of the ballpark with its heavy breakbeat and UK-style bass. "Street", a mesmerizing groover.

MCCOOK & THE AGGROVATORS, TOMMY King Tubby Meets The Aggrovators At Dub Station CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Tommy McCook & The Aggrovators' King Tubby Meets The Aggrovators At Dub Station, originally released in 1975. Tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook is rightly considered a giant of Jamaican music. Chosen by Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd to be leader of The Skatalites in the early 1960s, he went on to become the chief exponent of rock steady as leader of The Supersonics house band at Treasure Isle. McCook remained a key session player throughout the reggae era, and during the roots reggae heyday of the mid-1970s, his expressive melodies found particularly strong outlet, especially on the music he created for grassroots producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee as a member of The Aggrovators, the studio outfit Lee hand-picked from the cream of Jamaica's musical crop. When enhanced by the adventurous mixing experiments of King Tubby, the engineer that turned dub into an art form, instrumental Aggrovators music became positively ethereal, yielding an exceptional listening experience. On King Tubby Meets The Aggrovators At Dub Station, Tommy McCook blows mean sax and flute over dubs of outstanding tracks by Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell, Linval Thompson, Delroy Wilson, and others greats. CD version comes with six bonus tracks.

VA Raster-Noton Source Book 1 CD/BOOK
The publication Source Book 1 represents the beginning of a comprehensive and authorized review of the past 20 years of the label Raster-Noton. A short introductory preface by Olaf Bender is followed by a keynote interview conducted by Berlin publicist Max Dax that provides an insight into the identity and philosophy of the label heads. The main part of this first Source Book comprises the extensive catalog of all releases and series published between 1996 and 2016. Tabular listings of various formats and products that were distributed or curated by Raster-Noton complete the catalog. A further exclusive part of the publication is the accompanying Archiv 4 CD, which is only available in connection with the book. Raster-Noton's Archiv series was first introduced in December 2003 as a supplement to The Wire magazine and has since been continued in loose sequence with different artists related to the label. Following the idea of the label which defines itself as a platform for its artists, the releases in the catalog part are not presented according to their format, invested effort or meaning, but sorted according to their catalog number and presented on exactly one double page, whereas some series were summarized. As a continuation of this archival revision, further Source Books are planned that will document artist profiles, installations, composition techniques, and sources of inspiration. Source Book 1's modular design allows it to remove, exchange or add pages, which makes it possible to update the content in due time. A cardboard slipcase covers the 400-page, three-kilo book and guarantees a safe stand in the bookshelf. The Source Book 1 comes in an edition of 1000.

Gnoomes, the threesome hailing from Perm, Russia, present Tschak!. It may only be eighteen months since the release of Ngan!, the band's first release for Rocket Recordings (LAUNCH 082CD/LP, 2015), yet the band have already moved on to a sonic landscape still more adventurous and ethereal on Tschak!, not to mention an emotionally resonant approach that's bewitching to witness. Taking in torrents of guitar, noise, and electronic extrapolations, both bliss-fully kosmische and aggressively abrasive, it exists outside of all or any convenient genres, a vivid and singular work by three dreamers-at-heart forced to manifest their vision into a psychic defense to the circumstances surrounding them. Working in splendid isolation, thanks to a studio space provided by their work for a local radio station, the band had time and space for the alchemical process of creating Tschak! entirely on their own terms. Central to this were a collection of Russian synths that they gathered, whose eccentric arpeggios and analog textures form crucial ingredients on songs like "Severokamsk" and the title track, which allows them arrive at a sound that forms a star-crossed and timeless marriage between the experimentation of krautrock and the lineage of Warp Records.

KINGSTON ALL-STARS Presenting Kingston All-Stars CD
Composed of some of the most gifted musicians to ever walk the mean streets of the Jamaican capital, the Kingston All-Stars project is a celebration of the heyday of vintage reggae, taking the form of a contemporary music project that pays homage to the glory days of the music's past. Spearheaded by Canadian producer, engineer, and musician Moss Raxlen, who was also the driving force behind the Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae (2009) feature documentary, the Kingston All-Stars revolve around a robust core of legendary session players. Drumming mastermind Sly Dunbar is of course half of the great rhythm duo, Sly and Robbie; bassist Jackie Jackson joined the Supersonics at the birth of rock steady, was a part of the Beverley's All Stars, and has been a touring member of Toots and the Maytals since the early 1970s. Guitarist Hux Brown was a rhythm player in the All Stars and Toots' band; lead axe man Mikey 'Mao' Chung was in the Now Generation and made an impact in both the Revolutionaries and the Compass Point All Stars. Keyboardist Robbie Lyn was an important session player at Studio One in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and was also part of the In Crowd band. After something of a false start in the mid-60s as a drummer and singer with the Caribbeats, Ansel Collins switched to the keyboards, making an instant splash with "Night Doctor" (one of Sly Dunbar's first recordings), and then reached the UK pop charts through hit recordings like "Double Barrel" and "Monkey Spanner". The Kingston All-Stars project does not end there: the resident drummer of Lee Perry's Black Ark, Mikey 'Boo' Richards also contributed, as has the sax and trombone team of Everton and Everald Gayle. There are kettle drums from Supersad and Calvin, lilting steel pan from Dean Barnett, and guitar and percussion from Roger White and Mossman, as well as Stranger Cole and Trevor McNaughton of the Melodians on backing vocals. The album's guest vocalists include: Cedric Myton of the Congos and his singing sparring partner, RZee Jackson, the original Greenwich Farm Rastaman Prince Allah, and Alana Jonsana. Everything was captured on tape at Mixing Lab studio in Kingston during the winter and spring of 2016, with further overdubbing and mixing overseen by Moss in Montreal. This album is only the beginning for the Kingston All-Stars.

A departure from his earlier work for ABC and Atlantic, this LP features Charles's reworkings of country standards in his inimitable pop-R&B style. In addition to being a damn fine album, it was also a landmark release as it bridged the racial divide between country music and R&B and marked one of the earliest albums on which a black artist had complete control over his own recordings. A truly monumental piece of 20th-century American music history, one that is essential to any collector of R&B or country!

DAVIS QUINTET, MILES Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet LP
Rumble Records present a reissue of The Miles Davis Quintet's Workin', originally released in 1959. The Miles Davis Quintet, in 1956, were maybe the best and most accomplished young group in jazz. And the quartet of albums that they recorded in two days that year, Cookin' (released in 1957), Steamin' (1961), Relaxin' (1958), and this title, Workin' are some of the most famous and timeless jazz recordings in history. They recorded this heavily over the course of two days to satisfy contractual obligations, but you wouldn't know it by hearing the recordings. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones are a seamless and incredibly cohesive group, playing off each other perfectly, and it's somewhat shocking to know that they only existed in this particular incarnation for less than three years. One of the most essential titles in jazz history reissued here on Rumble Records.

The two 10" records belong to Gainsbourg's chansonnier period, and they're far from that style that gave us his late minimalistic pop atmospheres for which he is well known. But they are already a nice take on Gainsbourg's future smoky night club attitude that later helped consolidate his maudit character, that sleazy sexy mother that seems to be encrusted in the grooves of each of his most famous scratchy vinyl of the seventies. Now, Not Also You is a return to exactly that honorable craft and service. Built around an imagined and imaginary curtain lecture from a saint to a sinner and housed in one of Henrik's "most techno" looking robes as of yet, it's a no-brainer, a reaper of a track - without frills but with a Fata Morgana-like rave signal. COSTY, RENE Expectancy: Collected Library Gems From The 70's 2LP
A reputed classical violinist and music teacher on the one hand, a curious jazz cat on the other. A business man and control freak, but an artist and free spirit as well. Still, rather little is known about René Costy. Small wonder: the Belgian musician and composer was in many, if not all, respects a singular man. The lure of international show business was wasted on him and consequently, his name has remained a well-kept secret. But cream always rises to the top. Some twenty years after his passing, his work - finally - goes global. Expectancy: Collected Library Gems From The 70's is a selection out of more than 400 tracks from a virtuoso, a versatile and insatiable artist. It's hard to underestimate the importance of this compilation, which focuses on Costy's library music production from the '70s. RAVJUNK Uppsala Stadshotell Brinner Igen. CD
Uppsala Stadshotell Brinner Igen. is the second album by Rävjunk, Scandinavia's best punk-psych band from Uppsala, Sweden. This second album includes tracks from rare singles and EPs released from 1979-1980, as well as completely unknown tracks picked by Peter Ericson (drums). Shadoks Music and Ericson were working on this album for weeks, and just before the album was done, Peter sadly passed away. This album is in memory of Peter Ericson, the great Swedish drummer and singer from Rävjunk. Uppsala Stadshotell Brinner Igen. is a great selection of songs influenced by the early pre-punk period ala Stooges/MC5, as well as the longer jamming guitar tracks of German kraut and space-rock bands. They also saw the heavy psych movement as a bright star. Several influences are evident, but it's all blended into something unique, as each member brought their own intriguing ingredients into the music. Guitarist Christer Lindahl was a Hendrix freak and singer Sören G. Andersson was deeply involved in the new punk rock movement. Bassist Lars-Eric was very much into Jack Bruce and Cream, while Peter, the drummer, was an avid fan of German bands such as Can and Guru Guru. The first album, originally released in 1977 was titled Uppsala Stadshotell Brinner (SHAD 185LP, 2016), which in Swedish means, "Uppsala City Hotel Is Burning". Uppsala Stadshotell Brinner Igen. is Swedish for "Uppsala City Hotel Is Burning Again". A great album from beginning to end, just as good as the first album for sure. Comes with an eight-page booklet.

Fast forward to 2007, after many years collaborating with artists such as Richard Barbieri, Yukihiro Takahashi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Bernd Friedmann, Steve released his debut, solo album Slope. Steve Jansen's second solo album Tender Extinction (HEADCOUNT 037LP/SJ 001CD, 2016) was an evocative blend of songs and instrumentals. The Extinct Suite is a reinterpretation of the more ambient and orchestral elements of this last album Tender Extinction. Not a remix by any means, some familiar passages are woven together with additional pieces to create a suite of instrumentals lasting over 55 minutes as one single track. Written, performed, produced and mixed by Steve Jansen. PIO, GIUSTO Motore Immobile LP
Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile, originally released in 1979. One of the most striking documents of Italy's minimalist movement, Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile is a masterwork with few equivalents. Produced by Franco Battiato in 1979, at the outset of a long and fruitful period of collaboration between the two composers, and issued by the legendary Cramps Records, its triumphs were met by silence, before falling from view. Emerging on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, Motore Immobile now sits within a reappraisal of a large neglected body of efforts made by the Italian avant-garde during the second half of the 1970s and early '80s. It is singular, but not alone. It resonates within a collective world of shimmering sound, one familiar to fans of Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Luciano Cilio, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Francesco Messina, and Raul Lovisoni. An exercise in elegant restraint - note and resonance held to the most implicit need. Everything between root and embellishment has been stripped away. A sublime organ drone, against interventions of deceptively simple structural complexity - executed by piano, violin, and voice. A sonic sculpture reaching heights which few have touched. A thing of beauty and an album as perfect as they come. The reemergence of Motore Immobile heralds what is unquestionably one of the most important reissues of 2017.

VOSTELL, WOLF De-coll/age Musik LP
Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Wolf Vostell's debut Dé-coll/age Musik, originally released in 1982. A seminal figure in the history of 20th century avant-garde, yet sinfully overlooked, Wolf Vostell unleashed ideas - those running wild through his debut LP Dé-coll/age Musik - which remain a slap to the face, more than half a century after they were set into play. A founding member of fluxus, an early instigator of happenings, an innovator of video art, Vostell was equally one of the most radical and irreverent practitioners in sound that the world has ever known. First released in 1982, Dé-coll/age Musik draws from material dating between the late 1950s and early '80s - the results of Vostell's application of décollage, the near perfect inversion of collage. Rather than gathered and assembled sounds, as with musique concrète, these are the result of subtractions from a former whole - the death of one, giving life to the next. Swelling from the past, Vostell's efforts pull the rug from beneath the common history of structured sound. A singular body with no loyalty, producing shocking results. A grinding confrontation - an intoxicating immersion in sound - as brutal as it is ecstatic - an exercise in joy. Dé-coll/age Musik assembles the essence of a creative spirit which is rarely known. Each work as radical and fresh today as the moment it was made. Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

CAT #: SCR 130CD
The follow-up to Spectres' acclaimed 2015 debut Dying (SCR 090B-LP/090CD), Condition was recorded by Dominic Mitchison and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road in London. It's louder and more abrasive than their debut, but also a real progression. It sounds huge and adds a genuinely innovative and confrontational edge. "There were discussions about experimenting with electronics, but the idea soon petered out when we realized we still wanted to experiment with guitars," reveals singer and guitarist Joe Hatt. As a result tracks such as "End Waltz" have a relentlessly pounding, almost techno structure, in contrast to the kinetosis-inducing dirge of "Dissolve". Elsewhere, the almost restrained (by Spectres' standards) white noise and wordplay of "A Fish Called Wanda" and the sprawling "Colour Me Out" are counterbalanced by brutal assaults such as "Neck" and "Welcoming The Flowers". "On this album we became even less interested in actually playing guitar," explains Hatt, "which meant that we got more into experimenting with the sounds we could get out of them when brutalizing them and letting the feedback do the talking."

COHELMEC ENSEMBLE Hippotigris Zebra Zebra LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Cohelmec Ensemble's Hippotigris Zebra Zebra, originally released in 1971. The Cohelmec Ensemble celebrate, above all, the pleasure of collective music-making. A group without a designated leader, they base their approach on reciprocal listening, but also on a dialogue between written and improvised material, in which all members have an equal responsibility whatever their instrument. This is even demonstrated in their name: COH as in Jean Cohen (saxophones), EL as in Dominique Elbaz (piano) and MEC as in the brothers François and Jean-Louis Méchali (respectively, amongst others, bass and drums), joined for this album by Evan Chandlee, known for his participation in Love Rejoice (1969) by Kenneth Terroade, and accepted, of course, as a full group member. Fitting together like hand in glove, the five musicians build something together, rather than trying to destroy an established order, as was the thing to do at the start of the 1970s, leaving the expression of an openly political agenda to others. In France, there was a tendency to explore an imaginary folklore which allowed certain elements of free jazz to be circumvented without being ignored. Which is why it is reminiscent of, in the melody of "Hippotigris Zebrazebra" when played with collective intensity, the best of American cosmic jazz, while also occasionally hearing McCoy Tyner or even Cecil Taylor under the fingers of Dominique Elbaz, or the vibraphone of Walt Dickerson evoked by Jean-Louis Méchali. Globally, however, their identity is original (even seminal), a fact which was to be confirmed by their next two recordings. For the record, it should be noted that the first album by the Free Jazz Workshop (from Lyon), another French group with a similar approach, would only be published two years later. Licensed from Cohelmec Ensemble. Deluxe reissue with high definition remastered audio; 12-page booklet on 200 gsm art paper. Includes liner notes and rare pictures; Gatefold LP with obi strip; Edition of 700.

CAT #: FFL 020LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Cohelmec Ensemble's Next. The Cohelmec Ensemble celebrate, above all, the pleasure of collective music-making. A group without a designated leader, they base their approach on reciprocal listening and equal responsibilities. This is reflected in their name, created from the first syllables of the founding member's names, which would remain unchanged in spite of the subsequent personnel changes: COH as in Jean Cohen (saxophones), EL as in Dominique Elbaz (piano) and MEC as in the brothers François and Jean-Louis Méchali (respectively, amongst others, bass and drums), Evan Chandlee joined them after they had already been playing together for a while, at the time they recorded their first album, 1971's Hippotigris Zebra Zebra (FFL 019LP). The follow-up (appropriately named Next) saw the original pianist leave, to be replaced by guitarist Joseph Dejean, who had already played with the Full Moon Ensemble, known for having accompanied Archie Shepp at the Antibes Jazz Festival in 1970. In spite of the personnel changes, the understanding and cohesion remain total within Cohelmec. They also maintain their trademark ambitious mix of written and improvised material. From this point of view, Next is even more audacious than its predecessor Hippotigris Zebra Zebra. Relatively brief tracks follow hot on the heels of one another, bolstered by a poly-instrumentality which stands out even more than in the past, giving the album the feel of a contrasting suite. There is a lot going on, leading to evocative atmospheres in which rigor and fantasy go happily hand in hand. Which is enough to say that this album should please fans of a style of free (chamber?) jazz which includes intelligent composed structures, a form in which French musicians have always demonstrated a personal approach, as in the example of Oeil Vision by Jef Gilson in 1964 (OI 012LP). Profoundly original and, it has to be said, seminal. Licensed from Cohelmec Ensemble. Deluxe reissue with high definition remastered audio; 12-page booklet on 200 gsm art paper. Includes liner notes and rare pictures; Gatefold LP with obi strip; Edition of 700.

The concept of collective creation appeared as essential, of which Cohelmec Ensemble was a typical example: in such procedures, individual identities can of course still express themselves but framed within a non-hierarchical common thought process with the emphasis on experimentation. Music making becomes a shared pleasure with an established vocabulary, and is often accompanied by militant left wing activism; which feeds into an ethical form of creation. For their third, and what would turn out to be final album, the Cohelmec Ensemble chose to save for posterity their live performance work, on which their reputation was based. A concert recording was made, notable for the inclusion of trumpeter Jean-François Canape, and the group lost none of its subtlety in moving from studio to stage. On the contrary, the situation galvanized them on to higher energy levels, without leaving behind the typically complex structures, to which were added potent, flowing improvisations, longer than usual, confirming the high standard of free jazz being played in France in the 1970s. This was demonstrated not only by the Cohelmec Ensemble but also, in similar or quite different registers (who cares), by formations such Perception, Dharma Quintet, Free Jazz Workshop, Machi Oul, or Armonicord. Licensed from Cohelmec Ensemble. Deluxe reissue with high definition remastered audio; 12-page booklet on 200 gsm art paper. Includes liner notes and rare pictures; Gatefold double LP with obi strip; Edition of 500.

PARRISH, THEO Parallel Dimensions 2LP
2017 reissue with new artwork. Originally released in 2000. "If you're keen to track down some truly creative house music that sounds like it indeed could be the soundtrack for a parallel dimension, look no further. This is it. That said, Parrish's style of house isn't just abstract for the sake of being abstract. It's actually quite musical and brilliantly crafted." --Jason Birchmeier, AllMusic

KANGDING RAY Hyper Opal Mantis 3LP
Triple LP version. Includes download card. The tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, are central themes in electronic music in general, and techno in particular, as the means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it produced. We're navigating a world of engineered pleasures, big data monitoring of movements and consumption habits, and falsely objective representations of reality, further blurred by a reduced attention span and several opaque layers of cultural interpretation and political manipulation. Manichean simplifications are used to create hate and fear in order to achieve domination and impose limits on freedom, and the irrational belief in endless growth, increasingly disconnected from nature, led to massive environmental destructions and waves of unprecedented extinctions of species. Our primal sensuous perception, vastly more abstract, emotional and sensual, make us feel the world as an ambiguous realm we are part of, but not in control of; a complex network of interacting forces and enigmatic patterns, a matrix of overlapping desires. Rebuilding our bonds with nature, reconnecting with our senses, and spreading love in the process become an essential act of resistance. Hyper Opal Mantis is a triptych on three states of desire, and the first long player of Kangding Ray for Stroboscopic Artefacts. Hyper is the primal, sensual lust, Opal is the emotional catharsis, a blissful desire for love. Mantis, like the insect it refers to, is the destructive, fatal attraction. French-born, Berlin-based composer and producer David Letellier, aka Kangding Ray, uses the combination of slowly swelling melodies and emotionally charged machine sounds to gives way to a sensitive, rhythmic symphony of staggering beauty - a juxtaposition of organic and synthetic, of acoustic instrumentation and digitized beats. His darkly textured techno grooves - a palette of throbbing bass lines, necromantic synths, processed guitar loops, rattling walls of distortion and unorthodox field recordings - accounts for a brooding, futuristic entity that connects him with both experimental and club culture.

It was in June of 1980. Rupert Marnie met spiritual highness Frater loannis and became his apprentice. The Magus told him invaluable things, like controlling his precious bodily fluids and the holistic mastery of others' endocrine glands. The greatest wisdom though reached him on his seventh day, when Frater loannis professed him an ancient ritual that allowed him to meet the Titan UFOhagen, aka CDboy. Rupert stood in awe, immediately losing his newly gained fluid control, and started crafting a piece of music, that would remind mankind that not all is lost, as long as there is almighty Ufohagen. Single-sided.

SIGHA Metabolism 2LP+CD
Token present Metabolism, the sophomore album from Sigha. The album marks James Shaw's third release on the Token label, following his singles Our Father/A Better Way Of Living (TOKEN 056EP, 2015) and Christ Figures/New Puritan (TOKEN 063EP, 2016). Metabolism represents an arrival: the artist offers his definitive statement on a production aesthetic that has been in development over the last few years. Shaw's work as Sigha has always placed the listener at a centrifugal point that invites a clandestine hypnosis rather than an abject hysteria. Cavernous low ends fixed firmly and effectively in a mono space, tether the music to the body, while exquisitely executed white noise patterns and crystalline pads warp and hiss around the stereo environment. This keen ear for distinction within the frequency spectrum acts as the central theme on the album. Metabolism encompasses a power dynamism that departs from the explicitly greyscale finish found on his more conceptual work as Sigha and as A Vision Of Love for Guy Brewer's Avian label. Though elements of Metabolism maintain a driven, corrosive quality, each searing sequence or mordant drum machine hit occupies its own space. On high-energy dancefloor moments and abstract tracks alike, Shaw's approach to distortion is one that sets out with an objective to separate components rather than to bind them. This creates a matrix of aural stimuli that remain heady and inherently propulsive, but are realized in a fashion more akin to high-fidelity sound design than processes traditionally associated with the techno genre. The record possesses a powerful musicality beyond this acute attention to form and structure. In the past, Shaw's productions have often married high-energy drum work with subtly shifting minor keys spread around the sonic periphery. On Metabolism, emotive leads sit squarely and comfortably in the foreground, and build towards rapturous crescendos that are crisp and omnipresent throughout the mix. These careful layers generate the extraordinary tension that has since become a hallmark of the British artist's work. Metabolism is a techno album, but its frame of reference is generous, drawing on the finest facets of the artist's own varied discography and the wider electronic music landscape. Cohesive and modern, Shaw's latest work eschews a handful of riffs on a single idea in favor of a multi-faceted, fully-realized expression of what the genre can be. 180 gram vinyl; Includes CD.

PHASE Submerged Metropolitan 12"
Following his second album Alone in Time? (TOKEN 057CD/LP, 2015) Ø [Phase] continues his ongoing connection to Token with the Submerged Metropolitan EP. The title track enters with Burchett's own brand of unease; the lead is tense and discordant, moving over a bumpy, rolling kick. Brushing off-beat hats rush overhead and play delicately with this unease above the thunder. Ethereal swells and intense rhythmic play introduce "Fallen Columns", which delves into atonality with keys that add a controlled recklessness to the composition. "This Absent Mind" takes on a hypnotic, dubby form with a confidence that belies its complexity.

VA Dreamy Harbor 3x12"
3x12" version. Excerpt from the liner notes for Dreamy Harbor, by Rob Sharp: "When Tresor founder Dimitri Hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in East Berlin on March 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of Berlin's most influential and enduring techno clubs. 'We didn't know what would happen ten months later,' he says. 'We signed a lease for a year. Which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months...' As Tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno - economic neglect and broken industry - were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression. Today, though the boom and bust of globalized capitalism has filled the void that followed the Berlin Wall, and techno has become a worldwide industry, we face a new political chapter, one defined by populism, nationalism and mistrust. Contemporary creatives should take inspiration from Tresor's story, an extraordinary experiment born from improvisation, resourcefulness and social neglect that uplifted the spirits of inner city communities for a quarter-century. This record marks the spirit of those 25 years of creativity, a paean to the psychedelic music of Dimitri's youth. From the signature magnetic soundscapes of Vainqueur to the dark textures of upcoming Beijing producer Shao; from Jon Hassell's slow epicurean volutes, to the ritual auras of Marcelus and Claudia Anderson's contributions; from the dub-infused pioneering programming of Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald, to Mønic's enthralling cadences, it represents some of the old and new names that continually epitomize Tresor's perennial spirit of ingenuity. 'We were space pioneers,' says Dimitri... Berlin is Europe's economic engine, headquarters to global industry and sole traders alike, where Polish, Kurdish and English are as likely to be spoken as German. That range of influences is felt in all areas of life, not least in the city's music."

Beside Trost releasing artists Chris Corsano (projects with Akira Sakata, Massimo Pupillo, Joe McPhee, and Mette Rasmussen, to name a few) and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (The Thing), with this new formation, the label works with the active US cellist and composer Daniel Levin. Daniel Levin is "one of the outstanding cellists working in the vanguard arena" (All About Jazz), "ridiculously fluent, virtually overflowing with ideas" (New York City Jazz Record), and "very much the man to watch" (Penguin Guide to Jazz). No matter what setting he plays in, cellist Daniel Levin occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them. The New York Times on Levin: "Demonstrating an impressive breadth of texture and contrast, the cellist Daniel Levin comes well prepared for a career in jazz's contemporary avant-garde." Elements of European classical music, American jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently in his unique sound. John Sharpe in The New York City Jazz Record: "he invokes all manner of musics with prodigious skill: jazz, classical, improv, noise, vocal chorus. Those with an adventurous streak or interest in the outer reaches of the cello universe will find much to savor." Personnel: Daniel Levin - cello; Ingebrigt Håker Flaten - bass; Chris Corsano - drums.

WEISS, KLAUS Time Signals LP
Trunk Records present a reissue of Klaus Weiss's Time Signals, originally released on Selected Sound in 1978. This hectic mix of dark drums with plugged-in, way-out, funked-up studio gear has been high on library geeks' want-lists for years. Made by Niagara drummer/library overlord Klaus Weiss, and including the monster that is "Survivor", originals are super rare, going for up to $300 if you can ever get near one. Standard black vinyl comes in a varnished bronze sleeve - a replica of the original LP.Jonny Trunk on Time Signals: "It was way back in the mid-1990s when fellow record collector and library music head Gareth Godard (AKA Cherrystones) first played me Selected Sound library LP 67, Time Signals. At the time -- and I think it's still the case -- Gareth was into Klaus Weiss. Weiss was the drummer for Munich supergroup Niagara, he could be found on library LPs we were digging up on the Conroy and Golden Ring labels, and his name would appear across early 1960s jazz LPs from Germany. His drumming sound was mechanical, peculiar, unpredictable and distinctive. But nothing he'd done that I'd heard sounded quite like Time Signals. It was more manic and experimental, and the sounds and slightly offensive rhythms burrowed into my brain almost instantly. It probably took about another three years to recover and find myself a copy, and even then I'd found the sounds completely at odds to anything else I knew about. A few years later Gareth also pointed out to me that this LP was all over Rockin' With Seka, a jet set hardcore movie from 1980 starring Swedish sensation Seka and Big John Holmes. Obviously the sound department on the film got busy with Selected Sound as another cue from the LP Nymphe (1979) is also on the soundtrack. But that is exactly what library music is for; Selected Sound produced these amazing library LPs, all beautifully recorded, sent them out in their shiny bronze sleeves around the world with rough guides to what they might be good for and waited for the royalties to roll in. Time Signals is probably the most desirable LP in the 9000 series catalogue. It sounds like nothing else and there are many high points, certainly something for everyone. And as musical tastes change and develop, Time Signals just seems to move along and fit. What seemed like otherworldly music to me two decades ago now seems like the norm. So here is Time Signals in all its odd glory, offering you a futuristic musical trip like no other."

TIGA Eye Luv U 12"
Tiga is back to tell you what you've always needed to hear with Eye Luv U. Co-produced by one half of Paranoid London, the single harnesses all the pure source energy of what enlightened club-goers describe as their favorite emotion. Scottish talent Jasper James darkens the tone on his remix, which would not be out of place at a classic off-the-grid warehouse rave. Butch's equally great "80's Warehouse Acid Remix" also lays claim to that warehouse, challenging what it means to be "warehouse" in an age when corporations pay people to throw parties in what used to be underground settings.

Victory present a reissue of Pacific, originally released in 1978. Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of the South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations. Pacific is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of so called "vaporware" music. LP includes insert.

Voodoo Down Records returns to the compilation series that started it all: Possible Side Effects. VDR always strive to keep things interesting.

RAWFISHBOYS The White Starline LP
What happens when you bring two born improvisers together in a monastery? It was with this question in mind that the W.E.R.F. label gave carte blanche to the Rawfishboys, a contemporary duo, to spend a week at the 16th-century Abbey of St. Godelieve in Bruges, never previously open to the public, so that they could work on a completely new repertoire. The reed-player Joachim Badenhorst and bassist Brice Soniano distilled no less than 20 new pieces out of their stay in this almost sacral retreat, enough to fill both a CD and an LP. On the LP, The White Starline, spontaneous improvisation alternates with random street recordings and sound collages. All this is then flavored with a spiritual seasoning that creates a connection between the CD and the LP. Those who like Colin Stetson or John Zorn's chamber music can now add this musical masterpiece to their collection. Includes printed inner sleeve and download code.
PRICE: $25.00
One piano, two musicians, four hands - music at the crossroads of minimalism, chamber music, contemporary jazz and improvisation. In their new duo, the jazz pianist Christian Mendoza and classically-trained pianist Heleen Van Haegenborgh explore Bach's oeuvre, starting from Kurtág's transcriptions for four hands. This inspired them to make their own music, a mixture of compositions and improvisation. The result is a meeting of two worlds, a unique symbiosis of age-old music and the constant urge for renewal felt by two present-day improvisers. Copper, their debut album, is released on the W.E.R.F. label, a mark of quality in Belgian jazz since 1993. Includes printed inner sleeve and download code.

VA Watergate Affairs 02 12"
For the sophomore installment of Watergate Records' various artists series Watergate Affairs, the label offer four searing cuts of dancefloor mania. Kicking it off is Ruede Hagelstein's "Flash Balls". At nearly eleven minutes, it's a masterfully crafted tune reminiscent of classic Carl Craig. Adana Twins' "Etah" follows with a lush palette of sonics dispersed over an incredibly infectious groove. Marco Resmann's "Modius" is a contagious groover that delicately balances the ability to fit any time or setting. Tiefschwarz completes the EP with their enchanting symphony "Backyard", whose opulent shimmers and warm low-end administer a superb trip into the ethereal.
