MOLLONO.BASS & AVA ASANTE Birds Flying High CD
In our fast moving times, five years of sharing a musical path is a remarkable way, and a good moment, to celebrate. Mollono.Bass and Ava Asante celebrate with their first joint album: Birds Flying High. By combining the catchiness of their solid grooves with a touching violin and a breathtaking voice, they create a magical journey - a journey that takes you along endless roads from lively African villages to mystic Asian dreams. While Part One of their vinyl double brought pleasure to the festival world in the summer of 2016 already (3000GRAD 035EP), the silence of the following winter gave them more precious time in the studio to melt all their musical feelings into a second vinyl. This CD combines the new mixes with the Part One. Lay back and relax or move your feet in passion.

BADINGS/DICK RAAIJMAKERS, HENK Evolutions, Contrasts & Electronic Music LP
Aurora Rising present a reissue of Henk Badings and Dick Raaijmakers's Evolutions, Contrasts & Electronic Music, originally released in 1958 under the title Electronic Music and released again in 1968 as Evolution & Contrasts. The 1968 release Evolution & Contrasts contains the same recordings as the 1958 Electronic Music album. Henk Badings and Dick Raaijmakers were composers, arrangers, conductors, and pioneers in the field of electronic music. They created electronic soundscapes with a rather creepy atmosphere. This stuff is different to the '50s avant-garde classics and the more pop-oriented electronic albums of the same period. Badings's "Capriccio For Violin And Two Sound Tracks" can be seen as a strange dialogue with sloping melodies between the violin and unidentifiable electronic devices that gives you goosebumps. It has a rather picturesque approach and could be used for early horror flicks as accompanying music for the horrifying scenes. The amazing fact is that this music still sounds fresh and exciting even nearly six decades after its initial release. "Genese", on the other hand, is a lengthy composition of chirping, bubbling, and droning sounds, swelling and ebbing away in regular intervals. Cosmic music of the highest order. Some sections also feel like an intergalactic information transfer signal of unknown origin. All-in-all a very spooky and haunting affair. It's interesting how electronic music already went back in the late '50s while most people consider the late '60s and early '70s as the heydays for electronic experiments and cosmic sounds. Well, this reissue allows listeners to experience the pioneers of this genre, and they really do it well. Raaijmakers even had a hand in writing groovy dance compositions when collaborating with Tom Dissevelt. He used the pseudonym Kid Baltan on these occasions. Anyway, this is quite a different thing. This is dark and utterly strange. "Contrasts" by Raaijmakers is a mixture between funny swirling sounds that make you think of a quick tempered discussion between little androids and menacing drones in the back that soon gets interrupted by single blows and hisses with frightening howls far in the back. This is definitely an album for true enthusiasts of strange electronic sounds who even consider early Tangerine Dream as fluffy pop music. Includes five bonus tracks.

CHILTON, ALEX Dusted In Memphis (And Elsewhere) 2LP
Limited repress. First time re-issue of the legendary Alex Chilton album Dusted In Memphis, originally released in 1980. For many, this is Alex's finest. Includes a second bonus album full of unreleased material; covers, alternate versions, fantastic demos, and infamous complete KUT radio session. All culled from the period between 1975 and 1980, a troubled - but prolific and brilliant - time for Chilton. This is deconstructed rock n roll, perfect pop songs perversely pureed, punkabilly before the term was coined, chaotic, trashy, beautiful. Allegedly, the only copy of these recordings that anyone associated with was lost in the house fire that claimed Alex Chilton's mother's life. If this is true, and the masters have been lost, it is truly a great, great shame as these are possibly the best post-Big Star recordings of Alex's long solo career. This quite legendary bootleg bridges the gap between Sister Lovers (1978) and Like Flies On Sherbert (1979). It contains the Elektra demos with some songs that might be regarded amongst Big Star's finest if they would have found a proper release. This is a great shame as it is an excellent document of where Alex was at during this stage of his career (he wooed the critics during his time in NY, but not the major labels). File between: Skip Spence's Oar (1969), Panther Burns's Behind The Magnolia Curtain (1981), Neil Young's Tonight's the Night (1975) and early Cramps.

DIEZ ENA, JAVIER Theremonial LP
Magnetic field, two antennas, twisted hands searching those hidden notes in the ether. Javier Diez Ena's Theremonial is a record with only theremin sounds, but it is not a theremin solo album. It's not a soloist piece, it's a kaleidoscopic range of sounds. Once you listen, you will discover rhythms, melodies, basslines, textures, harmonies, noises -- Yes, believe it or not, all that sonic magma comes exclusively from a theremin. No sampler was used in this record, every sound has been played with the instrument, sometimes in its natural spooky way, sometimes filtered through a weird variety of effect pedals. There are theremins playing the role of the bass drum, or snare, or bass, even theremins turning into guitar chords, shakers -- maybe this could be the first record where the theremin assumes all the musical roles usually related to a band. The theremin and its truly hard tuning sounds just as it was formerly recorded. Two strong flavors stand out in the potion: darkness and exotism. On the dark side you'll find songs like "Luna Hiena", run by an ultra-bass trembling sound, like the siren of a ghost cruise ship crossing the sea through a foggy night, an up-tempo version "Luna De Hiel", the klezmer noir feeling of "Cracovia Afterdark" or "Berlin Ghost Opera", the collision of two Berliner spheres apparently opposed like opera and industrial music, Neubauten style. "Ruidos De Ultramar-Ultramarumori" could be the sound of a theremin combo formed by Kurt Weill, Tom Waits, and The Young Gods. On the sunny side, the influence of exotica music can be detected: the sound of "Hanalei Dawn" moves the listener to a gorgeous dawn at Hanalei beach (Kauai-Hawaii). "Sunny García" pays tribute to that great Hawaiian surf champion, whose not so sunny temperament took him to fight other surfers in the sea for the perfect wave. "Waikiki Spleen" recreates the strange melancholy of a tiki addict in his first trip to Honolulu. "Roll Li Ning Roll", built from some harmonized loops and an eastern flavored melody, is a tribute to popular '80s Chinese gymnast Li Ning, with loops and loops without risk of dizziness. "Noche De Fiesta En Urano" is a bizarre cosmic trip, the background was recorded in one take, the odd impression is the result of divide and pass the theremin sound through an old Moog Taurus II synthesizer and some parallel delays.

COMELADE, PASCAL Le Rocanrolorama Abrege CD
Le Rocanrolorama Abrégé is a clear perspective on Pascal Comelade's musical universe; it can be considered an ultimate "best of" and a radical introduction to this chaotic and uncompromising instrumental music. Rocanrolorama Abrégé (abbreviated "rockandrolorama", in English) is the short version of the complete works and reworks of Pascal Comelade, published at the end of 2016 as a six-CD box set, in a limited edition of 1000, numbered and signed copies (BEC 5156515). Pascal Comelade made this album as if it was a new and separate album, with tracks that he considers to best represent his work, from 1993 to 2016, according to the principle applied with the Rocanrolorama box set: songs in their original form, alternative versions, reworks, additions. Le Rocanrolorama Abrégé was conceived with the double LP format in mind: four sides with six tracks each, which you can listen to in the right order, from start to finish, according to a logical, thought-out progression for each side (slow tempo, medium tempo, orchestrations, electricity, etc.), paying tribute to the concept behind the collection rhythm and blues formidable. CD version comes in a soft-pack with three panels.

DEMANDS, THE Say It Again/Let Me Be Myself 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present the reissue of this 45 from The Demands. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, The Demands were originally called The Fabulous Furys in college and switched to The Demands in May of 1969 to play a string of gigs in South Carolina for the summer. They cut the tunes for this single in 1973 with legendary North Texas engineer Phil York, originally pressed on Clem Records, original copies of this Northern Soul burner change hands for upwards of 600 bucks in good condition. The Demands had a moment of on screen fame in '73 appearing in the Blaxploitation film Fox Style as the house band at an outdoor fashion show. Band leader/founder Melvin Clemmons passed his bass duties to his brother around '79 so he could run his own nightclub and The Demands kept gigging until around '89 when they disbanded. Side A 'Say It Again' is an up Northern Soul number equal parts hi energy and good vibes. A sure shot for the soul parties, and a very welcome opportunity to put this obscure tune into collections. Side B's 'Let Me Be Myself' is a smash of a ballad really showcasing a different side of the groups writing and performing abilities. The sweet soul folks are in for a treat on this one, sure to make it to all the low rider enthusiasts mixes."

BERROCAL/DAVID FENECH/VINCENT EPPLAY, JAC Why 7"
Jac Berrocal, David Fenech, and Vincent Epplay return with their first record since 2015's Antigravity (BLACKEST 011CD/LP). The title track is a louche but volatile art-rock panther-stalk... a cracked jazz ode on street hassle, pitched somewhere between Vince Taylor-in-exile and PiL's Metal Box (1979)... Berrocal on vocals, a slurring stream-of-consciousness that becomes a yowl of despair; drums loose and dub-delayed; Fenech's jagged guitar phrasing, and Epplay's electronics set to flay. "Ice Exposure" situates Bef's mournful, muted trumpet in the eerie deep-freeze ambience that characterized Antigravity, and "Alienor En Aout" coaxes a gloomy poetry from affectless cold war radio broadcasts.

BOOKA SHADE Galvany Street CD
Galvany Street is the start of a new chapter in the history of Berlin-based duo Booka Shade. Long before Booka Shade became one of the most successful international dance music acts of the last ten years, Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger formed a new wave pop band in the early '90s, signed a record deal in 1992 and released two albums under the name Planet Claire. Galvany Street marks the return to their pop roots in collaboration with former Archive singer Craig Walker and a few additional guests like Urdur (GusGus), Australian Yates, and Daniel Spencer from London. Craig Walker on recording with Booka Shade: "As a singer, it's a real pleasure to work with Booka Shade as the music they presented to me was so rich and full of melody. The rhythms and melody are always top level and make the job of writing top lines and lyrics a very enjoyable one. I really love the combination of all our influences -- '80s synth pop, '90s Manchester and right up to more current stuff like The Weeknd -- it's all in there and it makes for a very interesting sound." Mark Plati, known for his production and mixing with David Bowie, The Cure, Prince, and many others, worked on "Digging A Hole", "Eyes Open", and "All Falls Down". Fritz Hilpert, mix engineer and electronic musician, a friend of Booka Shade, got involved with the final mix for "All Falls Down". If you think you know exactly what to expect from Booka Shade, Galvany Street will prove you wrong. You might find the occasional up-tempo beat here and there, but there are hardly any references to any Booka Shade music of the past. 2016's Movements 10, the ten-year anniversary of their milestone album, was the ultimate closure of a chapter, in which everything had been said and done in the realms of a trademark tech house and electro house sound, the project had invented and made popular across the globe. One of the strongest points of Galvany Street is the fact, that many of these songs instantly create a feeling of familiarity, grab you, build an emotional connection, and feel like songs that have been with you for years. Standard CD version comes in a jewel case.

ANDRIESSEN, JURRIAAN The Awakening Dream CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Jurriaan Andriessen's The Awakening Dream, originally released in 1977. Jurriaan Andriessen (1925-1996) was a Dutch composer. Although he was actually at home in classical music, he recorded three synthesizer albums in the late 1970s, the first of which, The Awakening Dream, is an outstanding excursion into experimental ambient and minimal music. Andriessen himself, 52 years of age at the time, called it a "trance symphony". The music - perhaps surprisingly for a contemporary classical composer - is less in the tradition of his peers such as Pierre Boulez or Karlheinz Stockhausen and more in tune with the electronic sounds of the '70s emanating from Berlin, Düsseldorf, or Forst, the likes of Cluster, early Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream, in places echoing Conrad Schnitzler. Andriessen was familiar with the work of these artists, but was probably more influenced by minimalist composers like Philip Glass or synthesizer pioneer Walter Carlos whom he admired. The entire album is played on a Minimoog Model D, a Fender Rhodes piano, a Hohner Clavinet, and a Philicorda organ. It was recorded sound on sound, before the 8-track machine entered the studio, using two Revox A77 tape recorders. Andriessen studied in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and in the USA with Serge Koussevitsky and Aaron Copland. Back in Holland he worked for radio, television and theatre. His compositions for state ceremonies such as the coronation of Queen Beatrix and the annual "Opening of Parliament" won him acclaim and he also wrote the music for the Oscar winning film The Assault (1986). Andriessen started to experiment with synthesizers on new compositions in the early 1970s. In 1973, he wrote music for Georg Büchner's play Leonce And Lena and performed it on the ARP 2500 synthesizer. Andriessen was more interested in the challenge of creating new, previously unheard sounds than he was in imitating existing instruments. He strived to invent a novel, unique musical universe. Later he worked mainly with a Minimoog Model D, experimenting and recording in the Dream Studio, the home studio he built with his sons Gijs and Nils in The Hague. As a composer, Jurriaan was always ahead of his time. He loved research and enjoyed using uncommon or newly invented instruments in his compositions, often in unconventional formations. His last work, Jeux Des Vents, appeared in 1996. He died later the same year in The Hague.

FAUST Fresh Air CD
Faust's new album Fresh Air differs in several respects from its predecessor, Just Us (BB 182CD/LP, 2014). The recordings were made at Jean-Hervé Péron's rehearsal studio in Schiphorst in northern Germany, hypnotic pieces with the kind of noisemaking the band is known for. For the new album, Péron and Werner "Zappi" Diermaier were looking for communication with musician friends and the audience. The tracks were recorded in changing ensembles at changing locations in the USA (during a tour in 2016). In these community recordings, with friendly support from Péron's database of field recordings, a strongly shaded noise music emerged which extends its feelers to the remotest corners of the here and now. Droning, swinging, lusting for freedom, here and there holding out quite stoically as machine-room blues. On board are the freely fabulous Barbara Manning in a live lecture, Jürgen Engler (Die Krupps) in overdub, and Ysanne Spevack as a wonderful wave-maker on the viola. The seven and a half minute title track begins with the poem by a French school friend of Péron (translated and recited in Polish) and ends in an industrial sound inferno. The singer cries for "Fresh Air" as if it is being taken away from him. Jean-Hervé Péron offers a political reading: "Can you breathe calmly here, or are we being poisoned?" "Engajouez Vous!" Péron presents this franco-Faustian artificial word to the audience and rewrites the Marseillaise for the here and now in the track "Chlorophyl". And finally, Zappi has his mini-dada performance with "Schnobs" and "Bia": a small dialect-based text piece, which starts with chlorophyl, goes over the meadow past the cow and lands with the farmer who drinks a beer and schnapps and suddenly sees two cows. The story of the band can tell that tale nicely. As Krautrockers, Faust had a worldwide career. On their first three albums in the early 1970s, they inhabited the vast field from improvisation to bricolage to rock'n'roll with the ease of rogues and the determination of declared sonic renegades. One can still feel the breathing of this music in current Faust pieces, in the stone-age thudding of "Fish", which Faust anticipated in 1972 on "Mamie Is Blue". "We let the music play through us," says Jean-Hervé Péron. Jean-Hervé Péron has a little tip for us: Listen to the fish.

SHANGO DANCE BAND Shango Dance Band LP
LP version; 2nd pressing w/o 7". "In the early years of Fela Kuti's career, well before he would define the genre of Afro-beat, and leave an indelible mark on the musical landscape, he was a struggling trumpet player, seeking to redefine the sound of his current group, the art-jazz ensemble Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet. As he moved his group towards the then-popular genre of highlife in 1963, he lost his bassist in the move towards commercial success, but gained the company of Ojo Okeji, who had a sterling reputation both as a bassist and percussionist in groups like Lagos Cool Cats, Rex Williams' Nigerian Artistes, and Western Toppers Highlife Band, a favorite of Kuti's. Okeji impressed Kuti with his deft jazziness on the bass, so he was in on the spot, and the Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet became Koola Lobitos. It was Okeji that introduced Kuti to the famed percussionist Tony Allen, (Who would subsequently join Kuti into his greatest years as an artist) as well as conguero Abayomi 'Easy' Adio. During his time in Koola Lobitos, Okeji not only contributed deeply melodic, and adeptly rhythmic baselines, but brought his own influence from emerging US soul artists like James Brown & The Famous Flames and Wilson Pickett, heavily pushing Koola Lobitos towards a more soulful direction. This push was often resisted by Kuti, who frequently clashed with Okeji. 1968 proved to be a turning point for the group, as the Nigerian Civil War broke out, and many starving musicians turned to the military for work. Okeji and Adio would leave for the army, while Kuti and Allen kept Koola Lobitos going, where it evolved through different names and iterations and grew into the worldwide Afro-beat force that made Kuti an icon during the '70s and '80s. But as Kuti and Allen rose to global recognition, Okeji and Adio would form a new band within the ranks of the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Their emblazoned blue jackets earned them the nickname 'The Blues', but Okeji preferred the name 'Shango' after the Yoruba thunder god. Shango took the fundamentals of Kuti's famous Afro-beat and brought new layers of guitar and horn arrangements, while often invoking supernatural aesthetics, and maintaining a love for the US soul artists that influenced Okeji so much. Because Shango was an army band however, their records were not readily available to anyone outside of the military so their music, including their eponymous 1974 LP, remained relatively unknown even amongst the people of Nigeria. Decades later Comb & Razor is thrilled to present this long-lost Nigerian gem for the first time to a world-wide audience."

ROACH, MAX We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite LP
Cornbread Records present a reissue of Max Roach's We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, originally released in 1960. Max Roach's 1960 masterwork We Insist! is a suite based on the Civil Rights Movement, and involves variations on the theme of the struggle for African Americans to achieve equality in the United States, a struggle that is still all too relevant. Roach began composing with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. in 1959, with the initial intention of having the suite performed in 1963, on the 100th anniversary of The Emancipation Proclamation. Featuring the wonderful Abbey Lincoln on vocals, as well as Booker Little, Julian Priester, Coleman Hawkins, Olatunji, and more, We Insist! is a truly stunning album, one that knows no equal from that time or since. DAVIS, MILES Conception LP
Following the 1949 and 1950 recordings compiled on Birth Of The Cool (RUM 2011122LP), which created the sub-genre of cool jazz, Miles Davis had already moved onto the next thing, because that's what an innovator does. By 1951 he was recording hard bop of the highest order on a variety of formats, including 10" and 7". This LP compiles a number of those recordings, and the fact that the entire record was recorded on one day, October 5, 1951, would be surprising if it weren't the one and only Miles Davis. Featuring Art Blakey; Sonny Rollins; Walter Bishop, Jr.; Tommy Potter; and Jackie McLean in his very first recording session, this is classic '50s Miles Davis. 180-gram vinyl. Includes download code.

MINGUS/MAX ROACH/ERIC DOLPHY/ROY ELDRIDGE/JO JONES, CHARLES Newport Rebels LP
Cornbread Records present a reissue of Newport Rebels, originally released in 1960. Led by Charles Mingus and Max Roach, this 1960 recording was made, in some regard, in protest. Growing increasingly annoyed by the booking policy of the Newport Jazz Festival, which he found to be too conservative and lacking in foresight, Mingus formed this group with such future leaning artists as Eric Dolphy and Max Roach, and the vocalist Abbey Lincoln. Recorded over only two sessions at New York's Nola Penthouse Studios, this Newport Rebels group put together a fine piece of post-bop that, despite its rather bitter beginnings, deserves to be more well known. Though the recording was his label's attempt at reaching a larger audience, this is in no way watered down; Thelonious Monk takes his unique interpretive approach to tracks from the likes of the Gershwins and Rodgers & Hart. With the help of a crack rhythm section of Art Blakey and Oscar Pettiford, this is one of Monk's early career highlights and a truly unique piece of '50s piano trio jazz. DER BLAUE REITER Epitaph 1980-1983 LP
Epitaph 1980-1983 is the compilation of all recordings by Der Blaue Reiter released for the first time ever, freshly mixed and mastered with all their original analog glory. In January 1983, Stefano Tirone and Stefano Mazzola had the chance to record most of the tracks that they had played as Der Blaue Reiter since their beginnings in 1980 and throughout 1981. They used a TEAC 4-track reel tape recorder and as four-track reels all songs remained unmixed and forgotten for many years. In 2012 and 2013 two of their songs, "Through Glasses" and "Lights Off", were featured in two Italian wave compilations but both songs were mixed, including some additional production elements, hence they didn't keep their full, raw originality. Incredibly, that has been all the Der Blaue Reite material that has ever been put out. Between 2014 and 2015, Stefano Tirone finally decided to mix all the surviving tracks from the original analog tape reels, but maintaining the primary sound and elements without additions or overdubs. Only one song, the instrumental "Tears Of Joy", whose tape was unfortunately damaged, had to be re-recorded but all the original instruments and amplifiers, surprisingly well-kept for all these years, were used again to make it sound exactly the same as the initial recording. The songs on Epitaph 1980-1983 are an amazing, historical document of what could be considered one of the first cold wave bands from Italy. Even though they have sadly remained virtually unknown, probably because of not having released anything until this decade, they were true pioneers. Drum machine, synths, bass, guitar, deep vocals to give aural shape to melancholy, together with heartfelt lyrics. The essence of what is now tagged as cold wave. Housed in a matte finish sleeve; Includes printed inner sleeve with pictures and lyrics; Includes download code; Edition of 265 (hand-numbered).

MOORE, RUDY RAY The Turning Point CD
"Throughout the 1970s, Rudy Ray Moore made his name as one of the most uniquely explicit, anti-establishment underground comedians working. With his profane, controversial material, and frequently taboo stories surrounding his famed pimp character Dolemite, Moore commanded a cult-fanbase throughout the decade, remained a star of blaxploitation films of the era, and was a strong influence on rap stars such as Snoop Dogg, Big Daddy Kane, and 2 Live Crew. His party records were considered too vulgar to be displayed in record shops, but word of mouth made his albums the stuff of legends. Though Rudy Ray Moore was widely known for his provocative stand-up, less is known about his musical side. Though he found success as a comedian he had always wanted to be a famous singer, and deeply loved to perform music. (His stand-up shows regularly featured a backing band, providing his monologues a backdrop of jazz and R&B music.) In 1972, as his comedy career was booming with cult-popularity, Moore released The Turning Point, and fans were treated to the raunchy raconteur's previously unheard croon. The album features smooth R&B renditions of songs by Curtis Mayfield, The Impressions, The Platters, and other favorites of the comedian, even featuring two originals written by Moore himself. The music on The Turning Point could easily stand toe-to-toe with the smooth, silky 70s soul of greats like Isaac Hayes or Lou Rawls. Over 35 years later, Dolemite Records, with a dedication to bringing Rudy Ray Moore's legacy to a modern audience, now brings you this compact disc reissue, complete with retrospective liner notes from Rudy's former manager Donald Randell."

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Land Between Rivers CD
On their second album on El Paraiso Records, Copenhagen quartet Mythic Sunship drive even thicker grooves into their niche of extended cave-man fuzz voyages. Mythic Sunship cut a sharp edge into their ten-plus minute sagas, often churning out tracks with seemingly endless amounts of energy. It's all here: wild bursts of fuzzy and echo-perplexed guitars, thick Geezery basslines, and a galloping myriad of drums. What Mythic Sunship deliver in raw, untamed energy, is kept in place by their deeply grounded tone. Land Between Rivers was captured in a wooden cabin in the north of Sealand, Denmark, where the band secluded themselves, making their release as akin to earthy doom as to sprawled-out krautrock - the Götterdämmerung of Scandinavian heavy psych. Causa Sui's Jonas Munk took on mixing duties, amplifying the earth tone and adding his sense of space and depth to the recording.

AYLER, ALBERT Prophecy LP
ESP-Disk present a reissue of Albert Ayler's Prophecy, originally released in 1975. Recorded in concert at the Cellar Cafe, NYC, June 14, 1964. Three weeks before this trio recorded ESP-Disk's first jazz album, the epochal Spiritual Unity (ESPDISK 1002CD/LP), it was captured "live" by Canadian poet Paul Haines, who also recorded the New York Eye and Ear Control soundtrack (ESPDISK 1016CD/LP). This is one of the most influential groups in jazz history, a coming together of like-minded innovators who would be considered crucial influences by succeeding generations, so there is no question of the immense value of this material. Yoked, in the CD era, to the one-sided 1965 LP Bells (ESPDISK 4076CD), made with a different band in a very different style a year later, it is perhaps best appreciated on its own. TOXIC: MAT WALERIAN/MATTHEW SHIPP/WILLIAM PARKER This Is Beautiful Because We Are Beautiful People CD
Recorded December 15, 2015 in Brooklyn, New York. This is Polish multi-instrumentalist Mat Walerian's third CD, all for ESP and all with Matthew Shipp. Walerian's first album (ESPDISK 5007CD, 2015) was the last new release approved by ESP-Disk's founder Bernard Stollman. This Is Beautiful Because We Are Beautiful People takes its title from something William Parker said during the recording session; it is also Parker's first time back in the studio for ESP since his first released appearance on record in 1973, appearing on Frank Lowe's 1973 album Black Beings (ESPDISK 3013CD) - an album of outtakes from the same session was released in 2011, The Loweski (ESPDISK 4066CD). TIBBWABP is also noteworthy as Shipp's recorded debut on organ. Shipp says of Walerian, "Mat approaches his instruments in a non-traditional way. He is a conceptualist and has a different personality on each instrument." VA Brazilian Love Affair 4 CD
2003 release. Far Out Recordings present volume four of Brazilian Love Affair, the world's leading Brazilian music series compiled by the UK's premier Brazilian DJ and aficionado Joe Davis. Joe talks about the record: "Brazilian Love Affair is a good synopsis of all the styles and current trends of Brazilian music and therefore Far Out Recordings's roster. On volume four you've got the classic, contemporary sounds of Brazil from Far Out Recording artists Marcos Valle ('Escape'), Joyce ('Todos Os Santos') and Azymuth ('Papa' and 'Rede De Espera') as well as the more electronic dance side that we release on 12 inches such as Democustico ('A Sereia'), 4 Hero Presents Natures Plan ('Without Words') and Osunlade's remix of Grupo Batuque. I think that Brazilian music makes excellent chill out music too because it's very melancholic - it has complex chord structures and harmonies bursting with soul and melody." Brazilian Love Affair 4 also includes forgotten gems unearthed by Joe on his last trip to Brazil and cuts from Patricia Marx, Max De Castro and Jairzinho Oliveira all signed to hot Brazilian urban label Trauma. Joe's "Brazilian love affair" began in the mid-80s. Whilst everyone around him was getting down to the sounds of acid jazz, Joe was immersed in Brazilian bossa novas, batucadas and sambas. As a young London DJ he introduced Brazilian music into London's burgeoning jazz dance scene - getting DJs such as Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova hooked on Brazilian music. Joe's tastes eventually out grew those of the record stores and he made his first trip to Brazil in 1986 when he was just 17. He progressed from being an avid collector to a record seller, traveling throughout Brazil and buying up peoples collections until he knew all the major players in Brazil's music scene. In 1992, Joe decided it was time to start making and releasing music too and set up Far Out Recordings. Ten years and 75 releases later, Far Out Recordings is one of the most influential labels in world music. Brazilian Love Affair 4 also features: Joao Parahyba, Orlann Divo, Paulo Moura, Ed Motta, Mamond and Vera Cruz.

Ole Ola features explosive Brazilian football songs and slamming remixes, plus crowd recordings from Brazil's largest stadium, as well as classic football commentary. Ole Ola is for both fans of football and Brazilian/world music. Recorded in Rio during the carnival, Ole Ola is a celebration of football and samba and features some of Brazil's finest percussionists on one album: Dom Um Romao, Ivan Conti (Azymuth), Wilson Das Neves (The Ipanemas), Dom Chacal, Cidinho Moreira and members of Imperio Serrano, Rio's most traditional samba school. The vibe is full-on batucadas, funky swinging sambas, traditional football songs plus slamming electronic remixes from Da Lata, Osunlade, Fauna Flash and Zero dB, which all captures the spirit of Brazilian football. To complete the experience and capture the excitement of the stadium, live recordings from inside Rio De Janerio's Maracarna Stadium and Sao Paulo's Morumbi Stadium are included, mixed in with snatches of classic radio commentary. Ole Ola evokes the passion and madness that any football fan has for the game with new versions of classic Brazilian football songs including the theme tune for the Brazilian equivalent of "Match of the Day" ? "Na Cadencia do Samba". Ole Ola combines the most slamming tracks from two previous Grupo Batuque albums Samba De Futebol and Rhythmix to create 71 minutes of non-stop percussive football madness. Featuring recordings made inside the Maracana Stadium in Rio featuring the torcida ("supporters group") of the football team Flamengo. ZEEP Nina Miranda & Chris Franck Present Zeep CD
2007 release. Far Out Recordings present the debut album from Zeep, the new band from Nina Miranda and Chris Franck. Nina and Chris were involved in two of the biggest selling and critically acclaimed Brazilian-influenced acts of the past decade - Smoke City and Da Lata. Imagine Led Zeppelin, The Meters, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles jamming in Brazil with Tropicalistas such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes - where rock 'n' roll, funk and classic pop get spiced up with a little samba magic - and you're on the Zeep trail. From cosmopolitan London to inspirational Brazil, Zeep bring you an album inspired by the attitude of the '70s, when music was live, urgent, right-on, scruffy, funky and folksy. The songs were mostly dreamt up in their home in North London from jam sessions over the last few years and Chris feels that being partners in life, as well as music, has influenced the vibe: "On this album, Nina and I have just been true to ourselves, we are a family and this has influenced how we make music. The band is made up of our close friends, people we've known for years who are like family to us, and I think this is why the sound and the vibe is so good." Alongside Nina on vocals and Chris on guitars are some of Brazil's finest musicians: Mauro Berman (Marcelo D2, Democustico), Marcelo Jeneci Da Silva (Vanessa Da Mata, Chico Cesar) and Marcalzinho (Joao Bosco, Pat Metheney). UK based Italian drummer Davide Giovannini (Marcos Valle, Steve Winwood) came along on the trip with them and back in Blighty they recorded the second half of the album with Mike Lindup (Level 42, Da Lata) on keys, Tristan Banks on drums (Terry Callier, Dave Valentin) plus Diabel Cissokho with guest vocals and Momadou Sarr on djembe. The album also features the voice of UK jazz and TV legend Kenny Lynch and the sax of the superb Jason Yarde (Hugh Masekela, Roy Ayers, Hermeto Pascoal). Whilst Zeep was mainly dreamt up in London, the beat of Brazil gives the music it's swing, as electric guitars, funky drumming and samba percussion all combine with shouts, whispers and random bursts of 'collective conscience' to produce one of the freshest albums in a long time.

MAKO SICA Invocation LP
"Pretty sure this amazing Chicago trio was first introduced to us when Jim McCardle insisted we buy one of their albums at a record fair in the Windy City. Not sure which one it was, but it blew us away. Surprisingly, over the damn-near-a-decade since they started recording, Mako Sica has managed to keep itself well out of the limelight. Even though their first LP, Mayday At Strobe (2009), was released by one of Chicago's pre-eminent vanguard labels -- Permanent -- it was not easy to locate people who have grooved to the band's Sun City Girls meet Blood Quartet vibe. Eventually, however, we tracked them down and found out they had new material waiting to go. They sent the files for Invocation and we were ready to squirt vinyl in a New York Minute. The wordless (if not vocal-less) parabola Makos Sica's music follows is an unending wonder -- a blend of tones that cross many overt rockist spheres while maintaining textural similarities to outfits like the Bitchin Bajas or Joshua Abrams' Natural Information Society, with a taste of the surfist proclivities of such bands as early Savage Republic. The material on this LP is cooked hard and deep in its own juices. There are moments you'd swear you're listening to Northern African guitar tropes, but then Make Sica's sound breaks open into waves of psychedelia unimagined in that scene. There are simmers of tone that feel Germanic in the most basic of ways. But these usually end up erupting in ways that absolutely negate form specificity. In fact, the more I listen to this, the more purely tripped-the-fuck-out it sounds. Amazing shit. Ignore at your own peril." --Byron Coley Edition of 300.

2017 repress. "The first act signed to The Neptunes' newly formed Star Trak label was a Virginia based duo known as the Clipse. The first single 'Grindin'' impacted the streets with its bare boned but infectious drum beat in the same way that 'Sucker MC's' did almost 20 years earlier. These brothers - Pusha T and Malice combined with The Neptunes groundbreaking production sent a clear message to the rap world ? 'we are not the same' (as rapped by Malice on his opening verse on 'Cot' Dam'). Clipse brings an authentic Virginia sound into the game and created a movement, with not only their darkly layered raps but The Neptunes as well. Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo were able to combine their cyberpunk production with just the right group to create a street masterpiece. Following in the footsteps of such rap criminologists as Kool G Rap, Nas, Jay-Z, and Mobb Deep, the Clipse offer the Virginia hustler's viewpoint with clever, hard-hitting lyrics that is sprinkled throughout the entire album."

DEAD PREZ Lets Get Free 2LP
2017 repress. "dead prez may have been slightly ahead of their time during their golden years, but that is definitely meant as a compliment. Sermonizing Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and the benefits of a healthy and just lifestyle during the height of the Bad Boy / Roc-AFella era of nihilistic excess in the late '90s, they also signed to a major label (Loud / Columbia) despite leaning much more towards the burgeoning indie aesthetics of the day. But this was a good thing -- using major label muscle to wake up righteous hip-hop fans who might have fallen asleep at the wheel. The group itself -- consisting of MCs stic.man and M-1, who produced or co-produced most of the duo's music -- was formed in Tallahassee, Florida in the early 1990s (M-1 originally hailed from Brooklyn). By later that decade, the duo had started making significant waves, having their music heard on the soundtracks to Soul In The Hole and Slam, as well as appearing on albums by Big Pun and The Beatnuts. By 1998, they released their first official single, the serious, stark 'Police State,' on Loud, appropriately brought to the label by Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian. After building a solid rep over the next two years with fiery live performances, in 2000 they unleashed their debut album, Let's Get Free. The album was a welcome return to provocative and often radically political rhetoric that hearkened back to hip-hop forebears including The Coup, Public Enemy and KRS-One (as well as poetic descendants like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets). Let's Get Free was critically acclaimed and benefited from multiple singles, including the infectious, thick analog drive of 'Hip-Hop' (which became the de facto theme song for 'Chappelle's Show'); 'It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop,' with a remix co-produced by a young Kanye West; 'Mind Sex' (with Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets); and the poignant 'I'm An African.' But the singles weren't the only worthy songs, as just about every cut here has deeper meaning than most full albums by their early 2000s peers. Highlights: the thought-provoking, anti-drug album opener 'Wolves'; 'We Want Freedom' (co-produced by frequent collaborator Hedrush); 'They Schools' and 'Propaganda' (co-produced by Lord Jamar, one of five songs he assisted on). All in all, this is one of the more underrated and possibly Top 5 fully-realized political hip-hop albums of all time. If you don't agree with the previous sentence, give Let's Get Free another listen... you might be surprised at how well it has held up over the years."

RUN-DMC Tougher Than Leather LP
"Too many people sleep on Tougher Than Leather, Run-DMC's fourth album. But hear us out as we plead the case for this amazing LP. By 1988 there was a lot more competition in the rap game -- Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T and many more had given Hollis, Queens' prodigal sons lots of competition. But Joe, Darryl and Jay were still at the top of their game, and hip-hop fans should never let this classic -- chiefly produced by their Queens neighbor, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Davy D[MX] -- get lost in their crates. For starters, the album's first single, 'Run's House' b/w 'Beats To The Rhyme' is arguably the most powerful one-two punch of the trio's career, showing contenders to the rap throne that they could still destroy a beat, tag-teaming with power at any speed. Not to be lost in the shuffle, fans were also reminded on both sides that Jam-Master Jay remained one of the world's best DJs, flexing the pinnacle of what would be called 'turntablism' a decade later. Both songs show a musical telepathy between all three that has rarely been equaled. The second single, 'Mary, Mary,' driven by an infectious Monkees sample, took a different approach, shrewdly ensuring that pop fans who jumped on the Raising Hell bandwagon had something to chew on. But, like 'Walk This Way,' the song wasn't just bubblegum -- there was an edge to it, and the lyrical gymnastics were very real. It wasn't selling out, it was allowing fans to buy in. 'Papa Crazy,' driven in concept and by a sample from the Temptations' 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone,' followed a similar pop-leaning path. Overall, the lyrical content on the album was a step up from the group's first three LPs. It's easy to infer, looking back, that they were feeling the heat from their younger competitors in the rap game. The genre was changing fast, and they were up to the challenge. On cuts like 'Radio Station' they bring substance to the grooves, by attacking Black Radio for its continual denigration of rap. 'Tougher Than Leather' reminds the world that they were still the Kings of Rock, with hard guitars to drive the point home. And 'They Call Us Run-DMC' and 'Soul To Rock And Roll' both bring things back to their early days, with sure-fire park jam rhymes and killer cuts. Tougher Than Leather, which went platinum up against a lot of competition, perfectly bookends the '80s output of one of the decade's most important groups. It encompasses the full range of the trio's capabilities, and reminds us that Run-DMC should never be forgotten as both pioneers and party-rockers. And so, we say, long live Joe, Darryl and Jay!"

DILATED PEOPLES The Platform 2LP
"On the West Coast, gangsta rap held sway in hip-hop as the 21st century began. The alternative and conscious rap music of the early-to-mid-90s had all but faded into the underground. The scene was set for a comeback, perhaps as a backlash to the perceived violence and misogyny of gangsta rap's content. Leading the resurgence of alternative hip-hop were groups like Jurassic 5, and recent signees to Capitol Records; a West coast trio that had been building steam underground since the early 90s called Dilated Peoples. Anticipation was high for the release of the debut album from Evidence, Rakaa, and DJ Babu. (Of the influential turntablist collective Beat Junkies.) When The Platform arrived in May of 2000 it was met with critical and underground acclaim, as well as affording Dilated Peoples their first Billboard chartings. It featured a back-to-basics sound with a heavy debt to the old-school hip-hop ethos, the kind of sound that harkened back to the early days of legends like De La Soul & A Tribe Called Quest. Hits like 'No Retreat' and 'The Platform' were bolstered by Evidence & Rakaa's subtle, abstract wit, and swift, adroit wordplay, while DJ Babu provided production chops and dexterous scratches. On The Platform the trio were joined by the likes of B-Real, Tha Alkoholiks, Everlast, Planet Asia, and many more providing guest vocals, while boasting guest production from The Alchemist & Kut Masta Kurt, among others. Since its 2000 release this influential record, which heralded the return of alternative hip-hop, has never seen a vinyl reissue. With that, Get On Down-always on top of giving the greatest hip-hop albums their due-is proud to present this re-release of The Platform. The rhymes are still fresh, the production is still pristine, and the album is now back on vinyl for the first time in 17 years."

BAKER & KAREN WILLEMS, AIDAN Nonland LP
Recorded in a single session at Berlin's Golden Retriever Studios on June 18, 2016, Nonland combines atmospheric, looping guitar with textural, polyrhythmic percussion. Having played together live only once previously, these sessions were entirely spontaneous and improvisational, intuitive and expressive. Aidan Baker is a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist using the electric guitar as his primary instrument. Using prepared and alternate methods of playing the guitar, along with various electronic effects, Baker creates music which generally falls within the ambient/experimental genre but draws on influences from rock, electronic, classical, and jazz. A highly prolific artist, Baker has released numerous recorded works, both solo and with various group projects, like Nadja, B/B/S/, and Caudal, on such independent labels as Gizeh Records, Pleasence Records, Important Records, Alien8 Recordings, and his own imprint, Broken Spine Productions. Baker is also the author of several books of poetry. A regular live performer, Baker has toured extensively around the world, including appearances at such international festivals as FIMAV, SXSW, Incubate, Unsound, and Mutek, among others. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Baker currently resides in Berlin, Germany. Karen Willems is a Belgium drummer who has performed with o.a, Zita Swoon Group, Jan Swerts, Novastar, Pascal Deweze. Currently, she is leader of the group Inwolves and regularly collaborates with Aidan Baker, Eric Thielemans, Dirk Serries, BARST, and Jean De Lacoste. DONATO & SEU TRIO, JOAO Muito A Vontade LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of Joao Donato & Seu Trio's Muito À Vontade, originally released in 1962. Joao Donato is a legend of Brazilian jazz and Latin music and this is his legendary debut album. The well-skilled performance speaks of a great routine each musician has, but there is so much fire and hunger to be found within the compositions. The listener will experience rather relaxed slow jazz tunes with an obvious bossa nova groove and a leading piano that takes off from the backing rhythm of drums and standing bass. On the other hand, there are tunes with wicked piano staccato lines and a powerful rhythmic drive that is rooted in Latin music, but shoots forward on a ray of energy. The tunes are well composed and have a memorable structure that distinguishes them from the beginning free jazz hype back in the day. Joao Donato and his mates in the trio were jazzy boys, but they were also songwriters. Catchy melodies were as important as a great and skillful performance. The combination of both sides of jazz, and the crossover with Latin sounds, makes Muito À Vontade a special album, with other greats to follow. Muito À Vontade stands out as a landmark. If you feel that it is time for an equally relaxed, but exciting jazz record to enchant you, here you go. A sweet reissue of a classic from the early '60s. Joao Donato and his trio play it rather smoothly but their passion hits you automatically after a short while listening. Even the slower tunes offer twists and turns that leave you feeling amazed.

PICCHIO DAL POZZO Picchio Dal Pozzo LP
2011 release. Goodfellas present a reissue of Picchio Dal Pozzo's self-titled album, originally released in 1976. Picchio Dal Pozzo can be considered as the definitive "Canterbury"-inspired band coming from Italy's 1970 progressive rock scene. Their 1976 debut album shows an incredibly rich sound tapestry, made out of some peculiar ingredients. Oblique tunes and liquid harmonies, airy flutes, crispy horns, loads of electric piano and fuzz bass, drops of jazz, pop romanticism, waves of minimalism and deep pataphysical vocals and lyrics. The whole album develops through a sequence of highly composed material and wide open sound forms. A deep journey through a multi-layered soundscape with echoes of Hatfield & The North, Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt and Zappa. Picchio Dal Pozzo's first work was out on Grog Records and subsequently reissued only in Japan (Grog Records was an independent label known for releasing the work of Italian underground pop groups of the seventies such as Corte Dei Miracoli, Latte e Miele and Celeste). 180 gram vinyl. "One of the most original, impressive and highly respected of all the experimental groups to have come out of Italy in the 1970s" --Chris Cutler.

TOLLWUT (BOCHUM) Seuchen LP
One hell of an obscure release for fans of leftist German street punk. A compilation featuring one of the most iconic underground acts Germany saw in the 1980s, Tollwut (Bochum). Punk rock in its original form and spirit: border songwriting with lots of ska rhythms among furious riffs. Seuchen compiles the rare 1981 Seuchen 7" EP, the even more rare 1983 MC cassette album, and the more sophisticated 1983 recordings. It makes one think of a way more raw, nihilistic, and aggressive Ideal, Fehlfarben, and Ton Steine Scherben, and might appeal to fans of the more wicked Neue Deutsche Welle underground as well. In the end, all of these bands are rooted in a similar background they share with Tollwut ("rabies"). Interchanging male and female vocals add much diversity to these tracks. When it gets to the four tracks from the classic 7" EP, ferocious underground punk rock are placed in between more tracks from the 1983 tape. It works fairly well with this splitting of the original single tracks and illustrates how a full-length album released back in the day might have sounded. Tollwut have a good feeling for great punk rock anthems that stick to your mind and deliver a brilliant rabid performance. They could have become a hard hitter on the scene back then! Fans of German punk music of the '80s should definitely give this a go.

SONIC DAWN, THE Into The Long Night LP
LP version. Into The Long Night is the second album by The Sonic Dawn, one of the most remarkable bands to come out of the new psychedelic wave in Denmark. Just a few seconds into this album, you will realize that you are in for a mind altering experience. "It's a trip! By taking the listeners to places they didn't expect to go, we hope to make them aware -- that they'll stop up and think about life for a minute. Awareness is the first step to change in the world," says guitarist and vocalist Emil Bureau. To achieve the dramatic changes of mood and feeling that The Sonic Dawn excel at, they mix a wide range of styles, from jazzy sitar pop to heavy acid rock. A pleasant-sounding, analog production makes the album easy to approach, not to water it down, but rather to pull the unsuspecting listener into the deep. The songs were written by day and recorded at night, during a month of complete isolation in a remote house by The North Sea. The track list can be interpreted as a trip through the night, into a new dawn. Close your eyes and see it: Go through the hill country with its long yellow grass, to the beach where the setting sun dances on the cold waves. Slide into the darkest hours, alone with your thoughts and doubts. Suddenly come the first blue rays, separating past from present, before a golden dawn is born and everything takes its right shape, perhaps for the very first time. Into The Long Night was made in collaboration with some of Scandinavia's most regarded personnel. It features Swedish Hammond legend Erik "Errka" Petersson on keys and Morten Grønvad on vibraphone and percussion, which adds to its soundtrack-like qualities. Mixed in The Village Recording with jazz producer Thomas Vang (Oscar Peterson, Randy Brecker, etc.). Mastered in Svenska Grammofonstudion with Hans Olsson Brookes (Graveyard, Blues Pills, José González, etc.). Fans of psychedelic rock, neo-psych, freak beat, and classic rock will surely enjoy this record.

CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 2 LP
The second of six albums issued under the title Everywhere At The End Of Time, The Caretaker's fictional first person account of life with early onset dementia, takes a more wistful tack as our protagonist gradually realizes that all is not well and begins to rummage deeper into the recesses of his memory, masking emotions of grief, loss, fear, and uncertainty by deeper dwelling in the recesses of a decaying mind. As The Caretaker's short term memory functions begin to more rapidly erode, the loop-based punctuation of previous installments begin to subtly unravel, leading his mind to drift off and ponder fuller segments of tea dance strings and horns which appear uncannily more inviting, seductive, and now even more tangible than the abbreviated reels of earlier editions. Loop points wilt away in autumnal greys and russet rustles as new information becomes more difficult to process, back pedaling down memory lane toward an opaque smudge of half-forgotten/remembered spaces, places and un/familiar faces which provide more comfort and clarity than the world around him. It feels strange to recommend undergoing this experience, albeit in such an impressionistic and detached manner, but it somehow feels like a conversely enlightening one for these strange, disingenuous and unpredictable end times that we inhabit right now. Artwork by Ivan Seal. Mastered and cut by Lupo.

ROMBOY, MARC Voyage De La Planete CD
Marc Romboy presents his upcoming album Voyage De La Planète, his first solo full-length production in over eight years. Released on his newly launched Hyperharmonic label, Voyage De La Plantète signifies an exciting new chapter for Marc as he experiments with his sound, pushing the boundaries between classical and electronic music to create both an emotional and atmospheric experience. "Jules Verne", named after the French science fiction writer, combines echoing arpeggios and a subtle woodwind harmony to create a cosmic soundscape. "Atome De Danse", "Symphonie Oblique", and "La Machine Du Temps" use elegant strings to further enhance an unearthly effect, title track "Voyage De La Planète" mixes the two mediums together with fluttering synths and somber strings before "La Lune Et L'étolie" builds introduces the bustling sound of the piano to create an upbeat melody. Whilst there is a strong classical influence, there are tracks on the album that reference Marc's electronic background. This can be heard in "L'Univers Étrange", which has an ambient sound, whilst pitched-down chords take "L'Universe Parallèle" to a dark and moody space. "Phénix" is a bass-driven track, layered with crashing synths, taking the journey to a high before the celestial experience draws to a close on an uplifting note with "Nocturne", a laid-back soothing track that exudes optimism and wonderment. Inspired by a concert with the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra where he performed Claude Debussy's works in a contemporary way, Voyage De La Planète signifies the start of a new chapter for Marc Romboy. Voyage De La Planète combines the strange, fascinating sounds of electronic music with the sublime beauty of classical music to create an extraordinary sonic experience for the listener. NECKS, THE Unfold 2LP
Repressed. Ideologic Organ present Unfold, brand-new recordings from The Necks, the legendary Australian trio who excel in bypassing musical cliche whilst exploring and extending the practices embedded within improvisation, jazz, post rock, ambient, minimal, and textural, "sound based" music. The latest document from this long-running ensemble presents itself as a double LP, with four side-length tracks. A deliberate absence of numbered sides hands a substantial swatch of participation over to the listener, allowing her to navigate his own path through the soundscape at hand. The shorter length of the vinyl format, far from being a constraint upon the members of the ensemble, instead offers them a more compact horizon to contemplate, wherein the distance travelled is recalibrated to more immediate and dynamic textural concerns. The immediacy of "Rise" confirms this new path, as the mournful tones of Lloyd Swanton's bass swirl around Chris Abrahams's crystalline piano motif, with Tony Buck's percussion steering proceedings into enlightening free-jazz territories. "Blue Mountain" cuts a swathe through the sonic undergrowth, with soul organ, rattling percussion, whistles, and loping sound-waves all vying for the foreground. "Overhear" retains a sublime melancholic aura as the percussion and keyboards simultaneously embrace and fall apart, whilst "Timepiece" skips along as a gentle gesture of further possibilities. Exactly how The Necks conjure their particular magic - as deceptively simple as it seems - whilst always moving forward, is anyone's guess, but Unfold proves yet again that rules and schools are to be broken and re-formed into patterns and frameworks unlike those already known. Adrift is the beautiful debut album from UK composer-pianist Steve Gibbs. Passages of soft microsound comparable to Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's duet albums or Mika Vainio merging with lusher cinema-scapes akin to Clint Mansell and Max Richter. Even after nearly 20 years, the sound of Gas doesn't seem to have lost any of its luster, as shown by the commanding success of Kompakt's fall 2016 re-release of the essential back catalogue as a box set (KOM 370LP). The overwhelming feedback from a loyal international fan community and worldwide media outlets attests once again to the sheer timelessness of Gas. Which is why it will feel like hardly a day has passed since the release of the last official album Pop nearly two decades ago in 2000, when Wolfgang Voigt resumes this specific creative path with the upcoming new full-length Narkopop. Even in the here and now, the unmistakable vibe of Gas immediately hits home, taking the listener on an otherworldly journey with the very first sounds, drawing them into an impervious sonic thicket, down to the depths of rapture and reverie. From wafts of dense symphonic mist emerges a floating and whirling feeling of weightlessness, before the listener steps into an eerily beautiful forest of fantasy, pulled in by the allure of a narcotic bass drum. While earlier Gas tracks were often based on the hypnotic effects of looping techniques, the ten new pieces on Narkopop unfold their magic in a more entwined manner, sometimes with the sonic might of an entire philharmonic orchestra, at times subtle and fragile. A main characteristic of Voigt's oeuvre, the coalescence of seemingly contradictory stylistic aspects such as harmonious and atonal, concrete and abstract, light and heavy, near and far is also a decisive feature of Narkopop. In accordance with the transgressive spirit of his collective work, Voigt carries the aesthetic conceptions of his music over to the realm of the visual. Based on his abstract forest pictures, the Gas artwork addresses Voigt's artistic affinity to romanticism and the forest as a place of yearning. For the first time, a closer look at the cover of Narkopop reveals signs of architectural fragments which hint at another, maybe parallel world behind Voigt's forest. Truth is the prettiest illusion.

BAHLU, KALI Cosmic Remembrance LP
Merlins Nose Records present the first official reissue of Kali Bahlu's Cosmic Remembrance, originally released in 1967. In 1967, Kali Bahlu felt that it was time to "simply speak the truth as it comes to me from the other side". She believes that we're all tapped in a cosmic game, and her overall adorably wisdom folly, that she preserved into her old days, could lead to the assumption that she's been the grandmother of characters like Luna Lovegood. Cosmic Rememberance features four narrations performed by Kali with a bright and sometimes piercing voice in which she unveils her visions to the listener. What awaits isn't exactly the typical flower pop with colorful harmonies; this is an entirely different affair. She speaks, screams, laughs, and sings with that lovely lunatic expression in her voice on a base of droning music that is a combination of classic Indian raga with sitar, table, and a few other eruptive sound creating instruments a really mystifying atmosphere. The music and narrations drag you into a colorful world of strange plants and creatures. They tell you enchanted stories of leprechauns, fairies, witches, Lemurian kings, angels, and "the Northwind [that] got stoned of marijuana...". This reissue includes two bonus tracks and extended linernotes; Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

FRY, MARK Dreaming With Alice CD
Merlins Nose Records present a reissue of Mark Fry's Dreaming With Alice, originally released in 1972. Dreaming With Alice was already an obscurity by the time of its release. Recorded by a 19 year old Mark Fry for an Italian sub label of RCA, it presented a beautifully naive kind of psychedelic folk similar to what the Incredible String Band laid down at the same time just a bit more straight forwarded. Young Mark enchants his listeners with dreamy vocal melodies of utter beauty which create an outmost peaceful atmosphere. The picturesque tunes take the listener on a trip out to the English countryside, on a gentle and warm spring morning, and into a fairytale world. You might get lost within this colorful dream and not be willing to return to grey reality anymore, but this music burns as the flame of love within your heart. The direction, despite all psychedelic elements, is definitely determined by British folk music of the '60s and '70s. One charmingly odd aspect of the album is that the title track has been split up over the whole album as short sections flanking the longer tunes. Mark Fry plays his acid folk from the bottom of his soul without thinking about satisfying the demands of the mainstream audience. Dreaming With Alice is intriguing, keen, and absolutely one of a kind, with a mood changing from rainy days to sunny mornings out in the meadows. Original copies in good condition go for about 1600 Euros, so a reissue is welcome among fans of totally psyched-out music, with mostly acoustic instrumentation and vocals. A must have for all fans of acid folk from the late '60s to the early '70s era. RIYL: Perry Leopold, Incredible String Band, Steeleye Span, Woods Band, Pentangle.

TAIEB, JACQUELINE Jacqueline Taieb: Her 1967 Debut Album LP
Merlins Nose Records present a reissue of Jacqueline Taieb's debut album, originally released in 1967. This 1967 yé-yé debut album is as scarce as gold dust, fetching high prices among collectors if they find a copy in good condition. Tunisian-born Jacqueline did fairly well with her music over the past 50 years and here we witness her more than adequate start into the world of chanson and pop. Her intense brand of fiery, late '60s beat, refined with tinges of garage rock, can be considered as an ear candy for '60s aficionados. Some rather lightweight tunes twang around you like flock of colorful butterflies and could easily have been a great success for the one or another star of the American West coast pop scene. Melancholic ballads straddle into this checkered round dance and seize your heart. The waking call happens instantly with a well-placed gruff beat tune, which you would not expect from such a tender young woman. In the next moment, a passionate French chanson drags you back to the opposite side. From well-behaved to cheeky and even charming. Due to very memorable and substantial compositions, this jewel of late '60s pop music is a classic. RIYL: Rolling Stones, The Shocking Blue. Edition of 1000.

SOLEY Endless Summer CD
Sóley is back with her third solo album, Endless Summer. Written over the period of one year together with her long-time friend and collaborator Albert Finnbogason, the new full-length sees the acclaimed musician from Iceland explore the more optimistic, sun-drenched corners of her songwriting. Sóley's latest offering is the warmth beneath the snow at the end of winter, the seeds waiting to grow as spring whispers to us. From the heavy organs, synths, and minor keys of her last album Ask the Deep (MORR 138CD/LP, 2015), Endless Summer emerges with a kind of hopeful sweetness, and feels even more vulnerable. "The idea for the album came pretty randomly one night in beginning of January 2016 when I woke up in the middle of the night and wrote a note to myself: 'Write about hope and spring'," she says about the album's general direction. "So I painted my studio in yellow and purple, bought a grand piano, sat down and started playing, singing and writing." And Endless Summer delivers just that, opening with the song "Úa" (named after her young daughter) that washes over the listener like a hopeful dream. It's based on an adventurous acoustic arrangement reminiscent of Joanna Newsom or Agnes Obel, which sets the tone for what is to follow in its wake. Throughout the new album, Sóley's arrangements for a small orchestra give Endless Summer a colorful touch: Take, for example, the track "Never Cry Moon", in which the sound of clarinet, trombone, and cello beautifully engulf Sóley's repetitive piano playing. Comprised of eight songs, Endless Summer is an album that's grounded in fertile wisdom. Not just an ethereal dream of love and light, but a subtle, accumulative wisdom. One might say that one of Sóley's signature is the childlike wonder in her lyrics, and Endless Summer delivers the same wonder, but with a kind of reverence for it, for she's no longer a wanderer in a nightmare, but an enchanted lover of mystery. Endless Summer is like the Icelandic summer, a liminal, endless turning, a shift of consciousness, an endless awakening of continual brightness not without the acknowledgement of winter; it is the eruption from which the rebirth of light emerges.

MATTIN Songbook #6 LP
"Butthole Surfers meets Run The Jewels" --Dean Roberts. Yes, there is rock, but it's so deformed that not even no wave could help you make sense out of it. Imagine if a bunch of viruses filled with fake news and contemporary nastiness would go straight to the core of no wave, punk, and rock's integrity: authenticity. Not to say that the Butthole Surfers were the most authentic band in the world or that this record matches the production of El-P, but instead here you have some of the most exciting musicians in Berlin coming together for the first time, interpreting some lyrics from Mattin, dealing with our fucked up times and the search for overcoming them. To say that there is no authenticity is not to fall into the postmodern relativism that has been a debilitating force in the struggle against the new wave of neo fascism. In fact, the latter also claim their own authenticity: race realism. Not surprisingly, authenticity was also at the core of Heidegger, which somehow connects National Socialism and its French deconstructionist critics. Even if this record for some might sound like deconstructed rock through electronic noise and improv, it is also doing something else, like building a Frankenstein monster in the form of a rock-as-zombie-avatar: as if Lou Reed would haunt us from the other side, connecting the motherboards of our devices to our brains, giving us all electroshocks for not being able to stop this fascism-as-the-new-punk regime, while he shouts at us: they got the traction on danger and you need to take it back! Features Farahnaz Hatam, Pan Daijing, Colin Hacklander, Werner Dafeldecker, and Dean Roberts.

SLUM VILLAGE Vol. 0 LP
"The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable, and his work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and many more has long been cemented in the annals of hip-hop history. It was during his time as a member of seminal Detroit group Slum Village however that ranks as among his greatest. His work with rappers Baatin and T3 would be a strong influence upon modern rappers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and earn widespread critical praise, and comparisons to other legendary groups like A Tribe Called Quest. In speaking retrospectively on their most famous album Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1, The Roots' drummer Questlove has said of the release that it 'single-handedly birthed neo-soul.' J Dilla has been gone for over 10 years now, and Slum Village has moved on from their time with the legendary beatsmith, recruiting new members along the way. Despite this, new Dilla compositions are still being discovered, and his legacy continues to be shared and celebrated with a modern hip-hop audience. Ne'Astra Music Group now presents a new compilation of rare Dilla material: Vol. 0. Ten tracks featuring the classic Slum Village lineup of Dilla on vocals and production, with Baatin & T3 also on the mic, collected by modern SV member Young RJ from unreleased material and demos recorded between 1994 and 1997. The knowledgeable hip-hop head may recognize key tracks from the circulated EPHCY Sessions, while others have never seen the light of day. A piece of hip-hop history that would have otherwise wallowed in obscurity, until now."

VITALE & BRIAN BAUMBUSCH, WAYNE Mikrokosma CD
"Brian Baumbusch (b. 1987) is a composer/performer based in Northern California working at the nexus between contemporary American and contemporary Indonesian music. Wayne Vitale (b. 1956) is a composer and educator who has long been inspired by the music of Bali, Indonesia. He has studied and collaborated with many of Bali's finest musicians and ensembles. Mikrokosma (2014-15) is an exploration in sound and light of the 'microcosms' of Bali-Hindu cosmology, where the universe is reflected and re-created in all its parts. The underlying concepts of the piece, revealed in form, proportions, meters (every movement is partially or entirely in 11), colors, sequence, and symmetry, are a direct interpretation of the pengider buana, the 'turning of the universe.' This graphic, spatial conception appears in a 19th-century Balinese treatise on cosmology called the Prakempa. It may appear esoteric to outsiders, but the graphic is known to most gamelan musicians, every priest, and a good number of others in Bali. It informs not only religious practice, but day-to-day practical matters such as the layout of a home. The pengider buana associates the 11 directions (N, E, S, W; the points in between, plus up, down, and center) with colors, gods, Sanskrit letters -- and tones of the gamelan. Music, by Balinese reckoning, is part of the basic structure of the universe. In this way, the piece is divided into 11 movements, which are reflective of one another; the first six movements were written alternately between Baumbusch and Vitale, and the later five movements are reinterpretations by Baumbusch and Vitale of each other's pieces composed in the first half. The work is a cross-cultural endeavor. Mikrokosma utilizes musical techniques and concepts that fuse or juxtapose Balinese and Western new-music traditions, particularly American minimalist music and its many offshoots. One of these fusions takes place in the realm of timbre and tuning. The instruments were conceived, constructed, and tuned by Baumbusch. Although he started from a Balinese conception in shaping the basic scale, recent research on the inharmonic partials (overtones) of metal keys and gong chimes informed the fine tuning process, yielding a unique scale and sonic world."

KING, JOHN Free Palestine CD
"Even before you've heard a single note of Free Palestine by the composer and instrumentalist John King (b. 1953), the work may well have made an impact for its title alone: a seeming reference to one of the more daunting, divisive sociopolitical conditions in modern global history. For King -- who became politically active during his late teenage years in Minneapolis during the Vietnam War era, participating in labor actions and protests, and later wrote music inspired by the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa -- the question of Palestine has been an issue of particular interest. It follows, then, that Free Palestine, a unified sequence of relatively brief string quartet pieces composed from May 2013 to August 2014, is to some extent politically motivated. Crucially, though, the work -- wholly instrumental and essentially abstract in nature -- does not convey a specific agenda. It is neither overt protest, nor a rallying cry. Instead, what Free Palestine ultimately represents is a kind of personal idealism, expressed in the action of a North American composer in the twenty-first century negotiating a new personal relationship with traditional Arabic music: experimenting with melodic modes (maqam'at) and rhythmic cycles (iqa'at), and transforming those elements for conventional Western instruments -- personalizing the music, in a very real sense, in order to embed it within his own cultural milieu. The work's lesson is not a blunt statement urging some particular form of action, but rather a simple acknowledgement of the invisible strands binding us in common humanity and intrinsic dignity, couched in a musical idiom invented not just to accommodate that commonality but to celebrate it."

VA Function Underground: The Black & Brown American Rock Sound 1969-1974 CD
"The CD includes a 24-page booklet with extensive notes on an overlooked and important portion of rock n' roll's history. Nearly everyone in the world can rattle off the great African-American musical forms. Jazz, blues, R&B, soul, hip-hop, house, gospel. One influential genre is always left off of the list: a folk music known as rock n' roll. Rock n' roll was a term originally coined to market the white-friendly version of a genre that already existed; prior to 1965, the line between rock n' roll and R&B was thin: Ike Turner recorded and released 'Rocket '88' ' in 1951 and, while its Chess Records release reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart, it is regarded by many as the first rock n' roll record. The Great Divide between R&B and rock n' roll came after the Beatles and the British Invasion decimated the Top 40 chart in 1964. Simultaneously, R&B entered a new phase, soon to be labeled 'soul,' which upped the music's gospel quotient and turned its frantic twang. So somewhere in the mid to late-1960s, rock n' roll became perceived as something for the Caucasian kids. When Jimi Hendrix and Arthur Lee made the scene, they were said to be black musicians entering into a white world. While that couldn't be farther from the truth, that false dichotomy has existed in America's popular conscious ever since, to the point where the idea of a black rock musician is on the level with the idea of a black cowboy. In the mid-1960s, funk replaced soul as the rhythm that was going to move the world. We know all its progenitor - James Brown, The Meters, Kool & The Gang - and their innovations: the syncopated, 4/4 dance between the bass and drums, horns repurposed as percussion, chicken-scratch and wah-wah guitar. We can trace where they came from. But there is one crucial funk influence that no one seems to want to acknowledge -- a devil-may-care attitude we can attribute to rock n' roll. It's not a stretch to say that funk is the African-American answer to psychedelia and hard rock rolled into one. The idea of 'progressivism' that took over rock music after psychedelia's heyday in the late 1960s belatedly spilled over to funk. In the early 1970s, as the underground/psychedelic fire burnt out in the white rock world, it roared to a blaze in the black musical community. Nearly every American city with a large black population boasted self-contained funk bands that didn't consider themselves simply revues or backup groups, but rather fully-operational ensembles. In these bands, everything from composing, arranging, record production and distribution, was handled in house by band members. These are the bands whose music comprises this anthology, and while they're all different, they're unique in one way: they kept their ears open for new developments in funk and rock music. This anthology presents earnest questions as to why we know so little about these bands and the movement of which they were a part. While we don't anticipate that we'll ever find a definitive answer as to what these ensembles' true goals were, then, we do know that they took their charges seriously. And they knew they were onto something different, something that, though only they and their immediate kin might recognize it, was more interesting than the status quo. Function Underground shines light on an important and overlooked part of rock n' roll's history and talented ensembles that toiled in the shadows, derided by their peers 'Do you realize that Hendrix was dead before most black people in America knew he was a black man?' Ebony Rhythm Band drummer Matthew Watson questions rhetorically. 'We was scorned. In that era, everybody else in the black community was wearing three-piece suits, processes and Afro wigs and that shit. We was the first guys to wear bell bottoms. The first guys to wear big hats. We were off into a whole other thing.' "

KITAJIMA, OSAMU Masterless Samurai LP
Oom Dooby Dochas present a reissue of Osamu Kitajima's Masterless Samurai, originally released in 1980. A more world music and definitely a more progressive fusion rock approach is what defines Masterless Samurai, the second album by Japanese prog warrior Osamu Kitajima. On Masterless Samurai, he takes his vision of merging Japan's traditional music with progressive rock and jazz music of the west even one step further than he did with his previous albums. Excessive flute lines of Eastern origin, funky intricate grooves, and fiery synthesizer eruptions are the basic ingredients for most of these impressive instrumentals. The fusion elements are strong in this sound and all the exotic elements from Japanese classic music pull each song far out of the mass of similar acts emerging in the late '70s. Leave behind the Pink Floyd comparison and go for the Canterbury jazz-rock scene, with Caravan and Soft Machine as leading figures, and Osamu Kitajima definitely fits in between these giants due to his creative vision of a progressive world rock music. Don't take the rock elements as utterly physical heaviness; the album rocks but in a more delicate way. The sparkling lines of the electric piano can tell where this record goes. And even a rather gentle tune, like the instrumental ballad "Floating Garden", shows a wicked and progressive edge with expressive sax runs and cool twists and turns, despite the all-in-all relaxed atmosphere.

KENNEDY, SOPHIA Sophia Kennedy CD
DJ Koze introduces Sophia Kennedy - the self-titled, stunning debut album by 26 year old wonderwoman Sophia Kennedy. Elegant, melancholic, sometimes menacing, with smoldering piano melodies, desolately whistling organs, and a jaunty jaw's harp loop; kissed by the golden Californian sun, or shrouded in gloomy, dreary fog: Sophia Kennedy is currently the most versatile composer in German pop music - not to mention the greatest singer. Her self-titled debut album reveals her as a dramatic romanticist and distanced diseuse, as a deft lyricist and master of melody. In her eleven songs, she travels from doo-wop to dubstep, from classic crooning to breathless R'n'B, from Frank Sinatra to Beyoncé. Her talent for songwriting is deeply rooted in history, yet it seeks nothing but the present: both historically versed and timelessly beautiful at the same time. All tracks have been produced by Sophia Kennedy and Mense Reents (who is known as being a member of Die Vögel, Egoexpress, Die Goldenen Zitronen). CD version comes in high profile pocket pac design.

"Mono no aware", "the pathos of things", also translates as "an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera". A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present. LIMBOOS, THE Limbootica! CD
Something unusual and unpredictable always seems to happen right under our very noses. And on such a rare occasion you could brag about colliding with a group as magnificent as The Limboos. They are unusual because you usually cannot hear a current R&B band with so much musical talent and, in turn, sound different from all the rest. And unpredictable because their knowledge and devotion to the greats of the genre is reflected in all of their songs, all originals written by them. Inside them is a special secret gift that combines rhythm and elegance to the nth degree. The Limboos emerged out of nowhere in 2013. Within a few weeks, they recorded a single, took the road and have not stopped gyrating and motorvating. The band has been tightening up their "Exotic Rhythm & Blues" with a series of unforgettable shows. Their first album Space Mambo (PENN 005CD/LP, 2014) caught everyone by surprise, and their songs and live shows engulfed all audiences, adding fans beyond the rock and roll circuit. In this second album, Limbootica!, the band continues its journey to the heart of the rhythm, a journey to the center of the best roots music, investigating and growing at every turn of the road. To this masterful rhythm and blues formula with Latin influences, here they add a few shots of gospel and swing ("No Troubles", "I Don't Buy It" or the hypnotic "Been Whole A Lot Time"), a clever mix of tropical and soul ("Lies"), and their underived tribute to the Brazilian bossa, the exquisite "Blue Dream". They channel Cuba in "Crazy Rumba" and have you stumbling down the crawfish stinking streets of New Orleans, exhaling rum while hugging a streetlight on "Calypso Drunk". The magnificent songs and the incontestable musical style of these twenty-somethings, with scathing production of Mike Mariconda for the final knock-out punch. A more realized document and executed with even more conviction than in the previous disc, incorporating new instruments and extending the horizon of each subject with arrangements you just don't see nowadays. Get it before it gets you. The Limboos are: Roi Fontoira - vocals, guitar; Sergio Alarcón - organ, guitar, percussion, backing vocals; Daniela Kennedy - drums, backing vocals; Santiago Sacristán - double bass, electric bass, backing vocals; Dani Niño - baritone sax.

To prove it, he captured the entire creative process of Chasing Goosebumps and streamed it using Facebook Live from the DJ Jazzy Jeff fan page, allowing millions of music lovers to witness this unprecedented approach to making music. Chasing Goosebumps exemplifies the sincerity and soul-bearing emotion that only comes from unhindered creativity. Not genre-specific, the album is an eclectic, yet cohesive, mix of soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, pop and samba. From the melodies to the lyrics, Chasing Goosebumps is moving and provocative, tackling topics like social injustice, relationships, love and the music industry. Vocalist Glenn Lewis serves as the perfect vessel for these stories of frustration, anger, hate, inspiration, love and hope. His distinctly familiar voice navigates the range of topics and music styles with effortless delivery. Chasing Goosebumps is musically as diverse as the artists who brought it to life, The PLAYlist. More than a supergroup, The PLAYlist is a movement that promotes authenticity in music and empowers artists to remain true to their craft. For The PLAYlist, Chasing Goosebumps is reassurance that real, meaningful music is not a lost art. Chasing Goosebumps is not the end of an era. It's just the beginning. Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

BETA YAMA GROUP, THE Free Love CD
PMG present a reissue of The Beta Yama Group's Free Love, originally released in 1980. "It's hard to get a handle on Nigerian musicians Nash Dodoo, Charlie Cuul and Jonas Caulley. In 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the BML Chapels. And in the same year, calling themselves the Beta Yama Group, they put out Free Love, a belated love letter to San Francisco's Summer of Love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. Free Love is a small slice of Haight-Ashbury transported to the Polygram Studios in Lagos. 'Te Revoir' is Mamas & Papas jamming with Sergeant Pepper's Beatles. 'Free Love' offers a respectful nod towards Je T'aime-era Serge Gainsbourg. Sure, 'Revolution' gets hard and funky and 'Rain' flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. Insanely rare - and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone - Free Love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. What more could you want from an album?" --Peter Moore

GYAN, KIKI Feelin' Alright CD
PMG present a reissue of Kiki Gyan's Feelin' Alright, originally released in 1983. "Kiki Gyan's star didn't burn long, but it burned bright. Drafted into the Afro funk super group, Osibisa, at 15, he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world by 21. 'Life was good, man,' he told journalist Kweku Sakyi-Addo. 'Too good!'. In 1983 he dived head first into the New York party scene. He took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record Feelin' Alright, his third and final solo album. All the Kiki Gyan trademark elements are present and correct. The album is a unique blend of highlife music with electronic funk and disco. 'Rosemary' follows the formula most closely and was a hit across Nigeria and Ghana. But on 'Give It To Me', 'Love To Love You' and the title track, you'll hear a slicker, boogie-influenced sound that has made Feelin' Alright one of his most sought-after albums. Kiki Gyan would never hit such heights again. His addictions eventually took hold and he died aged 47, destitute and alone. Feelin' Alright remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation." --Peter Moore

IGIETTEMO, TONY Hot Like Fire CD
PMG present a reissue of Tony Igiettemo's Hot Like Fire, originally released in 1980. "Leaning against a wall, his shirt unbuttoned to his navel and cradling a tumbler of something strong and sophisticated, Tony Igiettemo looks every bit the smooth talking '80s gent. When you put Hot Like Fire on the turntable and drop the needle, however, it is immediately clear that Smooth Tony is also a little bit freaky. Sirens, slap bass, squelchy synths and a titchy high hat that just won't give up, Hot Like Fire is a cosmic call from a dancefloor on the far side of the universe. Produced by John Malife - the go-to man in Nigeria when you wanted your funk freaky - it's driven by a heavy low end that compels you to move. 'Baby You Can Do It' is Boney M's 'Daddy Cool' via a sweaty Nigerian dancefloor. 'I Feel So Good' has a Kool & The Gang vibe, albeit with a freaky, warbling synth. And 'Hot Like Fire' is a strange reggae/funk fusion, fueled by the righteous herb. 'We Are One' and 'Africa Must Unite', meanwhile, are post-disco, reggae-tinged calls for African Unity. 'Rock Your Baby' is the album's most relentless dancefloor banger and sums up its ethos best. Clap your hands everybody and get down on it. Tony Igiettomo is here to make your body move." --Peter Moore

DORGU, EMMA Roverman CD
PMG present a reissue of Emma Dorgu's Roverman, originally released in 1979. "In 1979, Emma Dorgu decided it was time to act. He'd torn up the Lagos live scene with The Thermometers and conquered the airwaves with the single, 'World People'. But there were injustices afoot, not just in Nigeria, but in South Africa and Zimbabwe and across the continent as well, and he felt that something needed to be done. Roverman was his politicized call to action. Blackman Akeeb Kareem lent him the instruments and let him rehearse in his sitting room. Dorgu sets his stall out early in the reggae-tinged 'Free My People' calling for freedom for South Africa, freedom for Zimbabwe, indeed, freedom for all. Thankfully political injustice hadn't rid Emma completely of his urge to get on down. The New York ghetto funk of 'Roverman' and 'Loving' and the straight-head boogie of 'Afro Fever' leaven the message with a funky beat and an irresistible pull towards the dancefloor. On Roverman, Emma Dorgu has achieved that rarest of feats, an album that challenges your mind while it speaks to your feet. Protest music has never sounded so funky." --Peter Moore

OYEWOLE, EJI Me & You CD
PMG present a reissue of Eji Oyewole's Me & You, originally released in 1985. "A bona-fide Nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, and Bob Marley, Eji Oyewole combined African highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. His first album, Charity Begins At Home (1978) was an angry tirade against corruption in Nigeria. Me & You is his 'relationship' album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees Eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious 'Cameleon' featured on the cover. Eji's flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. Instead, on 'Me & You' and 'I'm a Dancer' it is a playful line of seduction. On the wonky and woozy 'Eniafelamo' his sax is a post-coital salutation. Even the one political track, 'Long Live Nigeria', is a loved up call for peace, progress, and trust. Chilled, assured and dexterous, Me & You is a sophisticated showcase of Eji Oyewole's chops. 'This is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,' he declares on the cover. BLACK, STEVE Happy Birthday To 'U' CD
PMG present a reissue of Steve Black's Happy Birthday To 'U', originally released in 1983. "How do you follow up a stone-cold Afro funk classic like 1979's Village Boogie (PMG 007CD/LP)? Simple. Gather together some of the hottest players in Nigeria, take them down to the Phonodisk studios in Ijebu Igbo and let them loose on a bunch dancefloor fillers you spent the last four years 'road testing' in Kaduna. And don't forget to get Lady Franka and Mariam Pledge in on backing vocals. Those girls know how to fire up a party. It helps, of course, if you're Steve 'Dudu' Black. Steve had a God-given knack for writing combustible dance tunes and the contacts in the industry to get the likes of Willy Nfor, Willy Roy, and Felix Lebarty to make them explode. From the opening track, 'Osasuima', the heat never stops. On 'No Stopping Me Now' and 'Ololufe/ Stay The Night', it's almost too hot to handle. Polished in a studio in London while Musical Youth recorded 'Pass The Dutchie' (1982) in the next room, Happy Birthday To 'U' is the gift that keeps on giving - an irresistible blend of highlife, Afro beat, and Afro funk that is guaranteed to start a party on any dance floor." --Peter Moore

MONITE, STEVE Only You CD
PMG present a reissue of Steve Monite's Only You, originally released in 1984. "Steve Monite's album, Only You, is a prime slab of Nigerian boogie. It's sinewy, compact and sexy, a little bit of disco mixed with a big dose of funk. Loose and groovy, it's a sonic seduction from another dimension. With legendary producer Tony Okoroji at the desk, and influential musician and sound engineer, Nkono Teles, creating magic on the synth, the title track is raw and melodic, dark and sweet at the same time. Steve sings about putting out a fire, but the music, and Stella Monye's sultry backing vocals, stoke it with aural gasoline. You've never heard a song less likely to lower the temperature and let cooler heads prevail. While never quite reaching the heights of 'Only You', 'Welcome My Love', and 'Things Fall Apart' keep the groove going, the later with a distinctly Latin swing. A couple of extended 'Disco Jams' and an obligatory, romantic ballad ('I Had A Dream') round out the record. In all honesty, however, it is 'Only You' that you'll keep going back to. It's a killer track, an Afro boogie classic that would hold its own on any dancefloor in the world, whether in the '80s or today." --Peter Moore

LEBARTY, FELIX Girls For Sale CD
PMG present a reissue of Felix Lebarty's Girls For Sale, originally released in 1979. "Before he was Nigeria's self-proclaimed Mr Lover Boy, Felix Lebarty was an upcoming musician in the country's Edo-Delta region. His big brother, Aigbe, was a legendary highlife bandleader, but Felix paid his dues playing guitar with Thony Shorby Nwenyi and the Collection of Stars, along with fellow 'star' Mighty Flames bassist, Willy Nfor. Perversely, Girls For Sale was released after Lover Boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in Nigerian music history. It is a collection of tracks Lebarty made early in his career, when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less practiced. In 'Come True', Lebarty actually admits to a girl that he hasn't got any money. He begs a girl to love him in 'Love Me Kiss Me' and pleads with a rival to give him a break in 'Don't Take My Girl'. He even takes a dig at Aigbe, his more successful sibling, in 'Mr Big Brother'. It's hardly what you'd expect from the disco god behind Lover Boy, who went on to have 19 children with seven different women. To me, that's what makes Girls For Sale worth checking out. It's gritty, lo-fi, and melodic, like The Apostles with a subtle a nod towards the Jackson Five, sung with endearing insecurity. What's not to like about that?" --Peter Moore

ENANG, SONY Don't Stop That Music CD
PMG present a reissue of Sony Enang's Don't Stop That Music. "In the early 1980s, Nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. With the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like Lemmy Jackson, Jake Sollo, Tony Okoroji, and Nkono Teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. Such was the fate of Sony Enang with Don't Stop That Music. Sony was no ordinary musician. As keyboard player and vocalist with The Founders, he'd record some of the most seminal albums to come out of Eastern Nigeria. But his album is best known for being produced by Jake Sollo, and featuring the song, 'Discolypso', that came to represent Sollo's very particular sound. Not that Sony Enang should be too concerned. Don't Stop That Music is at turns cosmopolitan, sexy, hip, romantic, glamorous and witty. It's got sophisticated dancefloor fillers ('Don't Stop That Music' and 'Where Were You?'), chirpy, good-time boogie ('Hold On' and 'You Are The One') and a bit of calypso-reggae sunshine to boot ('Life'). In short, it's the sound of a confident and prosperous Nigeria. A sound as sophisticated as anywhere else in the world, but with a unique energy all of its own." --Peter Moore

ARIGO & HIS KONASTONE MAJESTY, ROBO Sexy Thing CD
PMG present a reissue of Robo Arigo & His Konastone Majesty's Sexy Thing, originally released in 1982. "Robo Arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from Nigeria's Ogun State. A founding member of Pogo Ltd, he played bass, guitar, and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on Sexy Thing too. One listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it's pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo's heart lay. Especially when he gets to slap it. The slapping starts early on 'Konastone Ponk', a dippy, funky track where Robo implores that if his music 'touches your soul, get up and dance.' The interplay between bass and guitar is magic - it's clear that Eno Louis is Nile Rodgers to Robo's Rick James, with a bit of Prince and Parliament thrown in for good measure. The funk feels dark and dangerous on 'Girls Reservation' and gets seriously slinky on 'Sexy Thing'. I can't over emphasis what a truly great album this is. The sound is clean and the production is stripped back and funky, a sound Robo would finesse as a producer with his Robbosoneex Music Company in Benin. Listen to the audacious cover of 'Get Up Stand Up', and tell me that you're not convinced that very Bob Marley song needs a slap bass break in the middle. You need this record in your life." --Peter Moore

2017 repress; 2002 release. LP version. This is the third album by Einstürzende Neubauten, also known as Halber Mensch, originally released in 1985. The album opens with the startlingly oppressive, almost fully a cappella title track, with contrapuntal, atonal, en masse chanting. The album progresses to include quite a repertoire of electronically-generated sounds, finding the band developing their mishmash of industrial experimentation matched by terrifying clangs, stomps, and of course, the theatrical, poetic vocal delivery of Blixa Bargeld. An incredibly aggressive album, with insistent, pounding rhythms and razors on metal, and Bargeld's voice dominating your dreams for a month after listening.

GONSALVES QUARTET, PAUL Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick LP
Spellbound Music present a reissue of Paul Gonsalves Quartet's Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick, originally released in 1964. 1964 seemed to be a great year for jazz music, in general, and this special piece from a quartet, led by the great tenor saxophonist and long-time member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Paul Gonsalves, confirms this once more in an astonishing way. Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick is a typical instrumental post-bop album, not on the verge of progressive and free jazz, filled to the max with memorable, yet steaming compositions. Gonsalves nails it as a saxophone player and his backing crew -- consisting of piano, stand-up bass, and drums -- joins in to create a stream of sound that drags your soul away when you put the needle in the groove. The playing feels easy with sweet, but rather melancholic melody lines from piano and sax. It seems like they were singing love songs to each other while the rhythm section laid down the beat for both lead instruments dance to. The swinging sleaziness of a few passages heats up your blood to a simmering level; it's as if you were swallowed into a scene of Jack Kerouac's On The Road (1957), where a sax player goes wild in a small and dusty club somewhere on the West Coast. Paul Gonsalves and his guys take their listener onto a journey due with very expressive and strong melodies. This should have been a shining crown jewel of jazz where swing benignly turns into bop. The new and often more radical streams within the genre just oppressed this development and Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick, whose title was inspired by the name of Mr. Gonsalves's regular heroin dealer, became an underground classic for those who like to dig deeper into a genre to discover the real treasures. This is pure magic put into music.

ELLIS (THE NITTY GRITTY GIRL), SHIRLEY The Name Game LP
Spellbound Music present a reissue of Shirley Ellis's (The Nitty Gritty Girl) The Name Game, originally released in 1965. A mid 1960s rock n' soul smasher, Shirley Ellis and her songwriting team went for a colorful album here, combining hard hitting rock n' roll with a slightly softened garage flavor and lush soulful pop. It presents smooth, yet striking vocal melodies on nearly ecstatic rhythmic patterns. Dance songs are thrown in for the good measure, putting an emphasis on the groove that shake and rattle your funky bones. Shirley Ellis knows how to put words together and sing them in a way that fuels the rhythmic fire. The Name Game will certainly appeal to soul aficionados, but it goes deeper and further, melting down the borders to beat and rock n' roll. Despite the singer's age, this album feels fresh and youthful, which is owed to her timelessly elegant voice that shows class and style, even in the naughty moments. A fantastic gem for certain and a must have for fans of black '60s pop, soul, and rock n' roll.

KOLETZKI, OLIVER The Arc Of Tension 2LP
Double LP version. On his sixth album, The Arc Of Tension, the Berlin based DJ, label owner, and producer Oliver Koletzki yet again presents his remarkable vision of contemporary electronic music, while also assuming the role of a storyteller. The Arc Of Tension speaks to its listener as a singular, self-contained work, which communicates by way of its natural flow and arc of suspense. The latter is mirrored not only in the multifarious narrative of the actual album, but can also be understood as evidence for its creator's long musical history. While Koletzki focused on a diverse range of vocal collaborations on his previous long players, he now moves on to a different form of storytelling, rooted in the quiet confidence of a veteran musician, as well as the hectic lifestyle of a globally in demand DJ. The Arc Of Tension is a psychonautic journey through the various continents of Oliver's consciousness. The quiet chirps and warbles, which initially unfold on the opener "A Tribe Called Kotori", thus act as a loose associative bridge to Der Mückenschwarm, Oliver's big breakthrough hit of 2005. The first minutes of the album leave no room for doubt -- the listener is immediately locked into and captivated by an autobiographical world of sound. The dreamy, exotic timbres of the downbeat tracks "By My Side", "Tankwa Town", and "Byron Bay" are penetrating, but in a subtle yet purposeful manner. But soon the tension tightens and organic sounds, one-by-one, evolve towards a sterner, electronic cadence. The bittersweet neon synths of "Spiritual But Not Religious" pave the way for the complex rhythm of "A Star Called Akasha", an early highlight carried by melancholic cellos and contemplative piano chords. The ultimate turning point follows with "Through The Darkness". Here, at the album's center, Koletzki starts continuously upping the tempo and leads the way with his very own, melodic interpretation of today's techno Zeitgeist, exemplifying that a fusion of delicate musicality and sheer force leads to impressively ecstatic results. You fully take off into space, weightlessly propelled by the ambient drones of "The Day We Leave Earth". Ultimately, what lingers is the feeling that The Arc Of Tension is a deep glance into the innermost being of an outstanding artist.

LES FRERES MEGRI Mahmoud, Hassan Et Younes LP
A reissue of Les Frères Mégri's Mahmoud, Hassan Et Younes, originally released in 1974. Les Frères Mégri was a Moroccan rock band formed in Oujda, Morocco in the late 1960s. The band consisted of four members: the three brothers, Hassan, Mahmoud, and Younès, and their sister Jalila Mégri. Before the creation of the band, the Megri brothers were popular session musicians, composers, and producers in Morocco, starting in the late '50s. In the early '70s, Hassan and Mahmoud released four singles as Les Frères Mégri: El Harib/Heya Essamra, Galouli Ensaha/Kellemtini, Sebar/Ououd Ou Chouk in 1971 and Sabar/Chaaltiha Nar in 1972. This LP, their second album simply titled Younes Hassan Mahmoud and a collaboration between all three brothers, was released in 1974. They re-recorded some of the singles tracks with Younes and the result is one of the finest examples of the early '70s progressive, psych, folk sounds coming from North Africa and beyond. This is an album that stands as a high point for the genre globally. A baroque folk approach that demonstrates utterly mesmerizing results, psychedelic, electric guitars, sitars, bongos, swirling multi-tracked vocals that sound like prime era Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Trees, and the first two Pink Floyd albums -- It is of that pedigree. A holy grail LP that has been near impossible to locate for over 40 years. Beautifully remastered, it's presented here in its first ever reissue. Edition of 500.

GIBSON, JON Two Solo Pieces LP
"For his second album, Two Solo Pieces, Jon Gibson forgoes the dense, multi-layered timbres of Visitations in favor of simple textures and tone. While Two Solo Pieces serves up further evidence of Gibson's centrality to American minimalism -- witness its inclusion in Alan Licht's famed Minimal Top Ten list -- this profoundly intimate record also reveals the beauty of enclosed spaces and infinite harmonic vistas. As its unadorned title suggests, Two Solo Pieces consists of a pair of side-long tracks featuring the composer alone. While 'Cycles,' an iridescent improvisation on organ, achieves a downright eerie sense of expansiveness, Gibson's captivating alto flute on 'Untitled' draws the listener inside the instrument itself. The photo on the album's back cover -- a seated Gibson surrounded by cascading rows of organ pipes and the vaulted ceiling in Manhattan's Peace Church -- offers a striking visual complement to these gorgeous recordings. Originally released in 1977 on Philip Glass' Chatham Square imprint, this first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Anthony Moore, Roberto Cacciapaglia and Terry Riley."

DREYBLATT AND THE ORCHESTRA OF EXCITED STRINGS, ARNOLD Propellors In Love LP
"Arnold Dreyblatt has been called 'the most rock 'n' roll of all the composers to emerge from New York's downtown scene in the 1970s.' Dreyblatt founded The Orchestra Of Excited Strings in 1979, harnessing unusual tuning intervals to an exuberant performance style. Propellers In Love, the Orchestra's second album -- originally released in 1986 on the Stasch imprint, in conjunction with the contemporary art space Künstlerhaus Bethanien -- develops Dreyblatt's rhythmically exacting exploration of the glittering resonances and overtones generated by an ensemble of uniquely-altered stringed instruments and drums. On Propellers In Love, simple song titles -- 'Odd & Even,' 'Harmonics,' 'Bowing' -- belie intricate harmonic structures. Dreyblatt's modified instruments -- a contrabass and miniature piano fitted with piano wire along with violin, all tuned in just intonation -- undergo the Orchestra's rapid, staccato attacks. Sparkling timbres dance above interlocking rhythmic patterns moored by sparse yet propulsive percussion ('Pedal Tone Dance' and the title track). Throughout, the Orchestra's perpetual motion achieves a tremulous and exquisite density. Thirty years since its initial release, Propellers In Love remains a peerless work of second-generation American minimalism. This first-time domestic release is recommended for fans of Glenn Branca, Ellen Fullman and Charlemagne Palestine."

JANSCH, BERT Birthday Blues LP
"Bert Jansch's freewheeling fifth album, Birthday Blues, occupies a unique place in his solo discography. Released in 1969, the same year Basket of Light propelled Pentangle into the UK pop charts, Birthday Blues almost sounds like a Pentangle LP missing John Renbourn and Jacqui McShee. Backed-up by bandmates Danny Thompson and Terry Cox, Jansch neither holds back his characteristic moodiness nor takes himself too seriously. What's more, Jansch is in love. Heather Rosemary Sewell isn't just the inspiration for one of the song titles; she also designed the cover, whose Hans Feurer front photo shows Bert holding the couple's puppy. With just enough of a Donovanesque pop sense, Pentangle producer Shel Talmy keeps the overall feel of these recordings fresh, warm and immediate. As its playfully ambivalent title suggests, Birthday Blues reveals an artist fully comfortable in his own skin. Blues and folk influences are woven together into songs at once directly personal, yet generously light and free. The most 'pop' of Jansch's '60s solo recordings and perhaps one of his most underrated, Birthday Blues is a deep and rewarding family affair at the height of his musical powers. This vinyl release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes and features liner notes by Richie Unterberger."

MILSTEIN & ARTHUR BALSAM, NATHAN Bach - Beethoven LP
Nathan Milstein was born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1904. A virtuosic violinist, Milstein made his US debut in 1929 with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He later settled in New York City and became an American citizen. On the first side here is his wonderful interpretation of Bach's Ciaccona. Using the general architecture of Ferdinand David's arrangement of the piece from the 19th century, Milstein reaches a peak in the second major part, in an exciting and frenzied progression, that shows impressive control of bow speed and vibrato. An emotional and impressive player and interpreter, Milstein's performance of Bach's Ciaccona, Partita in D minor for solo violin presented here is one of the finest performances of his long and storied career. On the B side, Milstein is joined by the noted pianist Arthur Balsam for a recital of Beethoven's Spring: Violin Sonata No. 5 in F maj. Milstein's playing speaks volumes, resulting in a wonderful recital. Though he may not be a household name, Milstein is a hero who deserves a place in the annals of classical music history.

I MUSICI Corelli - Bonporti - Telemann - Vivaldi LP
I Musici, founded in 1952, followed in the path of the Virtuosi di Roma. Felix Ayo, their first violin, had been the pupil of Remy Principe, concertmaster of I Virtuosi. I Musici were a sort of young Virtuosi di Roma, cadets of sorts. At least this is how they were seen by the public, who adopted them the way mascots are adopted. I Musici later went their own way, at least in part, and took on Bach and Handel, Mozart (some splendid recordings of divertimentos and serenades), Haydn and Rossini, 20th century composers (Britten, Bucchi, Hindemith, Martin, Roussel), and even the late 19th century with the Little Suite Op. l by Carl Nielsen. They were a string group open to a wide-ranging repertory rather than an ambassador of Italian music. But in the concert presented here, I Musici were still the cadets of I Virtuosi di Roma and offered a program composed entirely of 18th century music that culminated in Vivaldi. Typical of those years was the inclusion of a pre-classical composer -- or Rococo, if you like -- in a Baroque context. The works performed were written by Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Antonio Bonporti, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Antonio Vivaldi. Features violinists Franco Tamponi, Felix Ayo, Annamaria Cotogni, and Franco Tamponi, and violaist Cino Ghedin.

GARSON, MORT Mother Earth's Plantasia LP
The Great Thunder present a reissue of Mort Garson's Mother Earth's Plantasia, originally released in 1976. Garson is well known as one of the pioneers of electronic music in the late '60s and some may have heard of his contributions to quite a few pop hits back in the day when he wrote and conducted orchestral arrangements for a few popular artists. During the second half of the 1960s, Mort Garson and his sidekicks Paul Beaver and Jacques Wilson among others, discovered the newly invented synthesizer courtesy of Robert Moog and made it an integral part of the future pop music even before Wendy Carlos released Switched On Bach in 1968. Plantasia was recorded and released a few years past Garson's monumental works: The Zodiac's Cosmic Sounds (1967), The Wozard Of Iz's An Electronic Odyssey (1968), and Lucifer's Black Mass (1971). Plantasia, originally released in 1976, has been labeled "warm earth music for plants . . . and the people who love them." So you as the listener can imagine that this is a rather bright affair, far from the dark and seething atmosphere of the earlier electronic pieces. A shining diversity of stylistic devices used as the foundation for dreamy and colorful compositions, which works like a soundtrack for a non-existent movie. The warm, yet haunting Moog melodies can still create a rather sinister vibe in their most playful and surreal moments, similar to what you would expect from a mid-seventies horror flicks from Italy. It is a feeling that, despite everything seeming peaceful and relaxed on the surface, something utterly dire is about to rise up. These are certainly just a few passages and when Mort Garson and his mates move on from lush orchestral soul arrangements to something white men always consider to be tribal music of the North American natives, you will drift with them from one scene of your inner mind movie to the next. At this point in the seventies, the technical requirements had already been a bit better with new inventions such as electronic percussion which gets used here and there, conjuring memories of records by German electronic pioneers from the same era, such as Cluster, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream. And despite the twinkle-toed harmonies and big arrangements, which point at the big band music and orchestral pop Garson originated from, the whole work is futuristic and intriguing.

CLARA MONDSHINE Luna Africana LP
The Great Thunder present a reissue of Clara Mondshine's Luna Africana, originally released in 1981. Clara Mondshine was a musical project of the late radio director, journalist, and composer Walter Bachauer, who worked for RIAS Berlin in the '70s and '80s. Mr. Bachauer was also involved as musician in projects with electronic artist Peter Michael Hamel and the krautrock act Between in the '70s. With Clara Mondshine, he was able to score three albums before his untimely passing in 1989. Luna Africana, from 1981, was the first, and it fits exactly into that era, when the sluggish grinding of the early epic "cosmic music" had finally completely vanished and a new peppy drive could be felt with the spacious soundscapes of electronic music. Still rather lo-fi, with primitive machine grooves and swirling waves of analog synthesizers to which some hypnotic drones were tastefully added, this music has learned a lot from the grand masters of the '70s, and especially the so called "motorik" style of krautish electronics with rather simple melodic patterns and a very rhythmical approach. The music on Luna Africae is quite imaginative and picturesque, and the trip it takes you on leads you through a dark galaxy where only the starlight guides your vessel. Certainly a must have for fans of Eno/Harmonia collaborations, Cluster's Zuckerzeit (LR 333LP) and other similar "motorik" electronic albums. It also has a Kraftwerk feel, just without the vocals of course. This long hidden secret gem is unveiled for your stellar listening pleasure. Beware of the depths of outer space.

YAMASUKI Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki LP
The Great Thunder present a reissue of Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki, originally released in 1971. The weirdest exploito-pop attempting to fuse western popular music with folkloristic elements of different origins came from the '60s and early-to-mid-70s. Among tons of more or less entertaining releases a few diamonds could be found and Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki, the brainchild of French composers Jean Kluger and Daniel Vangarde, is definitely a stand out production in this field. As you may have noticed, this album deals with Yamasuki, some fictional Japanese person about whom Kluger and Vangarde have created a musical concept story with a black-belt judo-master doing all the battle shouts and a female choir, the so called Yamasuki Singers taking the lead vocal duties. All in Japanese of course, with a strange grammar. At least it sounds Japanese, that is all what matters. The music itself is a simmering mixture of typical bloomy pop music of the late '60s with a psychedelic edge, elements of funk in the rhythm department, and some fuzzed-out acid rock tunes thrown in for the good measure. The Eastern flavor might just be an illusion due to the language, but all-in-all, Yamasuki is a beautiful western pop art vision of Japanese music. In fact it sounds and feels like many contemporary bands and projects that combined colorful power pop with a heavier guitar sound and regional peculiarities, which resulted in a simmering sound cocktail with fresh and exciting melodies. Fans of rich melody patterns will get their minds blown by this album. When Latin-based funk and samba rhythms flow beneath a lush vocal arrangement as witnessed in "Okawa", you will certainly jump of joy and dance through your living room like a maniac. Yamasuki is made to abduct you from reality and lead you into some exotic dreams. Well produced, well executed, and with a very original concept.

Whether it's the slow-burn immensity of opener "SW", the monolithic, doom-laden expanses of "Malz", or the spellbinding surge of "17. October", Atheos showcases a dark melodic complexity. DEL THA FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN I Wish My Brother George Was Here 2LP
2017 repress. "In the early '90s hip hop took a turn and gangsta-style rap dominated, making waves off the West Coast that rattled throughout the world. The East Coast's dominance was descending despite the success and positivity of Native Tongues acts like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, who favored thought-provoking humor and cleverness over gangsta rap's grittiness and grim outlook. It was in this landscape that Oakland, CA's Del the Funky Homosapien emerged in 1991, with his debut release I Wish My Brother George Was Here. Cribbing equally from the East Coast's irreverence and wit, and the West Coast's P-Funk inspired production, (the album was produced by Del's cousin Ice Cube) Del's debut has rightly been heralded as a benchmark album for underground hip hop. I Wish My Brother George Was Here not only produced the underground classics 'Dr. Bombay' and 'Mistadobalina' (#9 on the 1992 Hot Rap Tracks Charts), but also set the scene for the success of the other less gangsta West Coast artists like The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and of course Del's compatriots in Souls of Mischief. Above all else, Del is credited with injecting some much needed light-heartedness at a moment when it was truly needed. Traffic Entertainment now presents I Wish My Brother George Was Here as a special double LP reissue, featuring the original artwork, and all of The Funky Homosapien's witty and innovative rhymes intact."

SAVAGES, THE Live'n Wild LP
Twitchin' Beat Records present a reissue of The Savages' Live'n Wild, originally released in 1966. 1965 and 1966 were the years when the underground exploded and the first influences of psychedelia were showing up in the music of hardly remembered cult bands, such as The Savages originating from the Bermuda islands. Alongside three 7" singles, the band only released one full-length in 1966, Live'n Wild, recorded live at the Hub, a nightclub part of the Princess Hotel in Hamilton, Bermuda. The sound quality is awesome and the band's interactions with the audience offer quite a few entertaining announcements. The set features a collection of great tunes, three of which are covers. Live'n Wild, all in all, is absolutely rare. It is hard to find any original copy at all. But this reissue brings back the original album to all garage beat lovers. The strangest point here is the song "He's A Man", a cover version of Icelandic '60s rockers Thor's Hammer, with lyrics in English written by The Savages. "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" by The Animals was quite an obvious choice for a young garage band to include in their live set. The third cover version on this album is a more powerful rendition of The Drifters' "On Broadway". Nice choices, but the icing on the cake is the self-penned tunes, presenting a band that was up on the same level as most of the more popular garage beat heroes of the day, and with "The World Ain't Round, It's Square", The Savages had written one of the most wicked proto punk orgies of their era. It became a cult tune, proving to be one of the reasons the band survived in the memory of at least a few die-hards over the decades. It still sounds fresh and furious. The great "Quiet Town" is an early psychedelic pop tune. The overall mood of this record is certainly joyful, but you can feel the teenage angst and anger of these youngsters steaming from every note of their songs. If they got hold of a fuzzbox, their guitars would have been utterly distorted. Even with no distortion, they provide enough dirt here to make Live'n Wild an ultimate experience in 1960s garage rock on par with The Seeds, The Music Machine, or The Sorrows.

RAT COLUMNS Candle Power CD
Rat Columns is the mutable musical project of David West, an artist as prolific as he is diverse in his output. West is the driving force behind the groups Rank/Xerox, Liberation, and Lace Curtain, he was also a member of Total Control, and most recently debuted a solo album proper. Whether its forward-facing punk or turning his hand to crafting sleek prisms of pop, West's credentials check out. Rat Columns is no exception, always central to his vision and returned to many times since its inception in Perth almost a decade ago. A third album, entitled Candle Power, was recorded in Guildford, Western Australia, with the Perth crew of West, Amber Gempton, Louis Hooper, and Chris Cobilis, Candle Power sees the band's universe of chiming guitar pop explode into new worlds of color and shade. Candle Power tunnels further than ever before down the pop mainline, cutting in with moments of soul, disco, and experimental plots. West is a magpie-like musician, unafraid to assemble songs from a motley collection of influences and ideas. He weaves songs together with a deft hand and an acute grasp for the memorable yet momentary. A drumroll sputters to life kicking off the album with first track "Someone Else's Dream", a bittersweet remonstrance underscored by West and Gempton's shared vocals, vivid keyboards, guitar jangle, and a resolute beat. On "Time's No Vessel" West laments against a dreamy guitar refrain that's pure Johnny Marr. "Blinded By The Shadow" marks an about turn for the album, seeing the record start to flex its motorik muscles with a sequenced bassline and rock-solid drumbeat. "Is This Really What You're Like?" takes on a similar focused shuffle only with a more minimal demeanor. Whilst, "Candle Power II" takes the disco to the other side of the tracks with its shimmering synths, violin drones, and uniform beat. "Northern Soul" chases its own heartbeat through lush, sweeping synths and hushed refrains. "Dream Tonight" concludes the album with its propulsive drum machine, searching keyboard lines, and effusive bassline. It's a tour de force of pristine pop akin to New Order in its ability to capture this mercurial feeling, to listen through the music. Candle Power as an album is enamored with the fleeting, the difference between letting go and moving on.

FEATURE Banishing Ritual LP
Liv Willars (guitar) and Jen Calleja (drums) met while living in Brighton via Richard Phoenix of Sauna Youth -- a band Jen would join soon after -- and pretty much immediately promised to start a band with each other when they had both fulfilled plans to move to London. They performed as a duo for nearly two years before Heather Perkins (of Slowcoaches) joined on bass after she moved from Nottingham to London in 2014. Initially inspired by the addictive quality of the motoric Cold Pumas and jagged doom of Vision Fortune alongside the otherworldly radio pop of Ariel Pink, Feature's first release was a four-track demo recorded by Richard Phoenix and released on Lindsay Corstorphine's (also of Sauna Youth) tape label Cazenove Tapes. This was followed by The Culture Of The Copy EP released by Sheffield label Tye Die Tapes (2014). Self-described as melodic-punk and drone-pop, on their debut album Banishing Ritual, they strike from bare, menacing punk to harmonious post-punk to blisteringly fast garage-pop to ponderous instrumentals, showing not only their overlapping music tastes, but also how the band has gained broad influences over the years, representative of the diversity of the UK DIY scene from Joey Fourr to Good Throb. Calleja's lyrics are sparse narratives: a love song for a twin consumed in the womb, the stalking of a doppelganger, a rallying cry against the lack of belief in women's ability to be artists, a tongue-in-cheek look at jealousy and bitter competitiveness. Though Calleja provides a leading vocal throughout, all three members sing on most songs to create unmatchable and unexpected vocal harmonies, plus friend and fellow London DIY musician Joey Fourr provides his immense vocal range on two tracks. The band has always been vocal and present on issues regarding women in the DIY scene and wrote/co-wrote a number of essays on themes including sexism in music journalism, musical influence, non-musician roles bodied by women in the music industry, and the representation of women on mainstream versus DIY bills, which was published by Pitchfork.

FRUKO A La Memoria Del Muerto LP
"A La Memoria Del Muerto is Fruko Y Sus Tesos's second album, released in 1972, and features exclusively the soaring and soulful vocals of Cali native Edulfamid Molina Díaz, aka 'Píper Pimienta', Fruko's previous vocalist Humberto 'Huango' González having left after the first album Tesura (1970). The record is a mix of spirited cover versions and authentically Nuyorican-sounding originals with a Colombian twist. . . . Produced and engineered by Fruko's uncle Mario "Pachanga" Rincón, the album has an uncompromisingly stark, hard sound that is appealing to today's collectors of 'salsa brava' just as it was impactful on the Colombian scene when it was made at the beginning of the 1970s. Unlike the first Tesos album, with a two trumpet line-up and fairly simple arrangements, this more mature recording added another trumpet and two trombones for a more robust brass attack. Additionally, instead of basic salsa, there are many different rhythms - guaguancó, bomba, plena, oriza, bolero, cha-cha-chá, descarga and Latin soul. Though Fruko's sound at this stage wore its New York, Havana and San Juan sources on its sleeve - Willie Colón, Javier Vázquez, Richie Ray -, at the same time the album has a uniquely Colombian approach to these influences with the bounciness of coastal music like cumbia being felt throughout. The title song is a 'guaguan-plena' version of Dominica Y Su Conjunto's original 'Acuyuye' hit of the same name from a decade earlier. Following that is Fruko's take on Cuban pianist Javier Vazquez's driving salsa dura anthem 'Mi Verdadero Son'. . . . The side finishes out with more cover versions: the double-entendre 'La Fruta Bomba' by Cuban trovador Maximiliano "Bimbi" Sánchez Y Su Trío Oriental and the fiery rumba gitana 'Achilipu'. . . . Side B kicks off with one of Fruko's favorite Afro-Cuban artists, the conguero and Santería singer Silvestre Méndez, with 'A Bailar Oriza'. After a wild descarga (jam session) track, we are treated to a fun pair of cover tunes: Johnny Zamot's 'Bomba Africana' and the old Afro-centric chestnut by folkloric Cuban rumbero Alberto Zayas, 'Baho Kende'. . . . The record finishes off with another Fruko original written with his Discos Fuentes colleague Isaac Villanueva. . . . This reissue features as a bonus the Latin soul track 'Tihuanaco' (a cover of Peruvian pianist Alfredito Linares), which appeared on the US edition of the LP." --Pablo Yglesias, aka DJ Bongohead

COMBO LOS YOGAS Canabrava LP
"Combo Los Yogas was a short-lived early Colombian salsa band from Medellín directed and arranged by Aníbal José Ángel Echeverri, the famous antioqueño keyboardist known as Aníbal Ángel or simply Anán. Anán studied arranging and composition at the famed Manhattan School of Music in New York, had many of his own songs become hits over the years, founded the raspa gallega band Los Teen-Agers in 1958, and recorded with Discos Fuentes starting in 1965, so he was already an established musician on the scene by the time he founded this oddly named combo. With the influence of New York's burgeoning young Latin scene being absorbed by certain sectors of the youth in South America at the end of the 1960s, Aníbal Ángel must have felt the urge to join the fray, so in 1968 he founded Los Yogas to explore this new phenomenon from the north. Employing Barranquilla native Johnny Moré as his lead vocalist and a full combo with trumpet, trombone, congas and timbales, Los Yogas recorded a fantastic collection of cover tunes in the guaguancó, son, guajira, descarga and cha-cha-chá rhythms. The sound here is very raw and hard, something that makes this obscure Discos Fuentes record a sought after collector's item. Taking their cue from the New York scene, Los Yogas cover Larry Harlow's arrangement of 'Coco May May' and 'Bajándote' from Orquesta Harlow's 1967 album of the same name, as well as a fabulous version of Puerto Rican singer/songwriter Chivirico Davila's 'Montuno Pa' Caridad' from Joe Cotto's classic early 1960s album El Magnífico. Sprinkled throughout are heavy versions of Cheo Marquetti's son cubano classics 'Que No Muera El Son', 'Caramelo A Kilo', and 'Apriétala En El Rincón', all tunes heavily influential on Fania co-founder and musical director Johnny Pacheco. Venezuelan sax player and New York transplant Juan 'Johnny' Sedes's composition 'Aquí Y Allá' . . . became a hit in Colombia for Los Yogas when they covered it, as did the title tune 'Cañabrava' by Mexican composer Paco Chanona and the album's sultry closer, the guajira descarga 'Oye Mira' (originally done in 1965 by Pete Rodríguez Y Su Conjunto La Magnífica). Despite being a record with no originals, Cañabrava holds up magnificently due to the inherent quality and execution of its repertoire, providing a wonderful snapshot of the influences and early development of the genre of salsa in 1960s Colombia." --Pablo Yglesias, aka DJ Bongohead

MAYPOLE Maypole LP
Vinilisssimo present Maypole's self-titled debut, originally released in 1971. You have probably heard this story before: a great album gets released by the time the label folds and the few copies distributed end up in the dollar bins. Then, a few decades later, some connoisseurs realize what a great record that album was and it becomes collectable and sought after overnight. This is exactly what happened in 1971 when Demian Bell and Paul Welsh saw their debut album as Maypole released on Colossus at the worst possible time... The band was formed in Baltimore, Maryland in late 1969 and they named it Maypole, as in the Nathaniel Hawthorne story, as a symbol of freethinking they also aimed to represent. Their sound has been compared to bands like Cream, Iron Butterfly, or Led Zeppelin, and the similarities between Demian Bell's guitar skills and Hendrix playing have also been remarked upon. The bluesy hard psych vibes on their only US single Show Me That Way/Johnny (1971) certainly back those comparisons. Strong melodies and some nice group harmonies are the other magical ingredients that help making this album an amazing piece of hard rock music. Maypole soon gained media attention and a promo tour followed, including live appearances on national TV shows, the problem was they had no company behind their album. The band relocated to Holland and continued playing gigs with moderate success. Lifestyle excesses resulted in numerous personnel changes until the band finally dismantled in 1972, though several members briefly continued performing as The Flying Circus. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

"Escuela De Calor" is a classic Spanish pop cover. This is a co-production by Vinilos Enlace Funk and Sweet Records.

CINDY LEE Malenkost LP
"Cindy Lee is the brainchild of singer/guitarist Patrick Flegel. While some may know Flegel from his time spent in Canadian experimental indie band Women, Cindy Lee has spent the past four years crafting songs that push and pull in opposing directions -- from tales of tragedy laced with haywire distortion to moments of breathtaking beauty. On Malenkost, Flegel combines everything that makes Cindy Lee so essential: heart-wrenching romantic pleas, rough shards of noise and twilit ballads. Featuring the lo-fi pop single 'A Message From The Aching Sky,' Malenkost sounds like Deerhunter playing The Supremes or vice versa. Superior Viaduct's imprint W.25TH presents the first of many Cindy Lee releases. Spectral and timeless, the music of Cindy Lee is hauntingly familiar yet of another plane, a magical collision of Brill Building hooks and uncompromising No Wave. 'Cindy Lee is intensely dark and cathartic, an eerie fever dream of fleeting, utterly heartbreaking classic girl-group melodies . . . one of the best things we have heard all year.' --Gorilla Vs. TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass (Limited Audiophile Edition) 2x12"
Limited repress; 2x12" version. Comes in a gatefold Stoughton "Tip-On" jacket. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes.
