EMMANUEL, JD Rain Forest Music LP
Aguirre Records present a reissue of the 1981 debut album by new age pioneer JD Emmanuel, Rain Forest Music. Texan musician JD Emmanuel's career story is, in a way, a story about how the passion of fans can make a difference and about a gifted musician whose music may have been lost to the ages. The tale begins in 2005 when Douglas Mcgowan stumbled on several dusty boxes of two JD Emmanuel vinyl albums -- several hundred of them, all still sealed -- at a discount book and record store in North Dallas, Texas. Mcgowan purchased 50 copies and took them back to the west coast. This discovery set in motion a chain of events that led to a series of reissues and Emmanuel's return to recording and performing in 2010. The majority of JD Emmanuel's studio recordings date from the 1980s, when new age music in America was still an indie scene. Whether you call his albums new age or not, the meditative vibe, spiritual underpinnings and self-releasing are all hallmarks of the genre. Yet his cyclic, organ-based music is different from most of his contemporaries of that era. Back in 1970, he was deeply impressed by his first taste of classical minimalism when he heard American minimalist composers Terry Riley and Steve Reich. He was also attracted to the improvisations of modern jazz and long-form rock jams. Minimalism and improvisation, then, became the foundations of his art, and the evocation of trance-like states his goal. In 1980, with his newly acquired Crumar Traveler-1 organ, analog synths, guitar, and various effects, he began building a body of warm, melodic, usually stripped-back ambient trance with a unique mystical vibe. On Rain Forest Music he builds gentle, short cycles of notes into floating clouds of sound, mostly improvising around single chords. The "minimalism" in his music lies not in repetitive patterns that barely change -- the extreme end of classical minimalism -- but more in the spare arrangements. There's also an open, loving optimism to the melodies that has obvious appeal to new age listeners. The album cover is from an original water color created for the LP in 1981 by Houston artist, Molly Khan. 180 gram vinyl; Printed inner sleeve; Remastered by Rashad Becker; Lacquer cut by Rashad Becker; Cover reconstruction by Jeroen Wille; Edition of 1000.

DELTAWERK Passages 4x12"
Deltawerk is the Amsterdam based project of Pascal Terstappen, aka Applescal, and Polynation member Hessel Stuut. Together they present their debut full-length album Passages through Atomnation. Applescal has, to date, released on labels including Ghostly International and Traum Schallplatten, while the efforts for his own label Atomnation have seen him welcome music from the likes of Gidge, Weval, David Douglas, and Sau Poler, amongst others. Voted at a very respectable third place for XLR8R's coveted "Best New Act" in 2015, Hessel Stuut is a member of Polynation and has significant experience not only playing live music, but as a producer, visual artist, and designer too. Together, they form Deltawerk, a dynamically electronic duo whom, when united, create human and lucid music, which feels as much at home in an underground rave as it does in an open-air live performance. While there is a faint echo of artistic collision, the album undoubtedly provides an eerie sense of unity for both Pascal and Hessel's own discographies, conserving the warm subculture of analog and modular instrumentation. Features remixes by Marvin & Guy and Audiojack. Comes in deluxe outer-sleeve with four printed inner-sleeves; Edition of 150.

MORGAN, NEAL Sketchbook: March 2015 - March 2016 Cassette
Comprised of songs, vignettes, and arrangement experiments, Sketchbook: March 2015 - March 2016 presents selected studio recordings made by drummer Neal Morgan. It is his fourth solo record, and includes, for the first time, music composed using instruments other than drums and voices. Half of the songs were composed as "music intended to score imagined scenes" in response to the story of the Rajneeshpuram settlement near Antelope, Oregon in the mid-1980s. About the scoring work, Neal wrote: "On March 11, 2015, I tagged along with filmmakers Chapman and Maclain Way to see the former Rajneeshpuram site. The brothers told me about much of their research during that visit and showed me some archival footage. Particular visuals stuck with me: the desert landscape; the different hues of the red robes; the shining Rolls Royces out in the desert; the eyes and smile of the guru Bhagwan; red robes with rifles; the formerly homeless men expressing hopes and thanks for community and rebirth. Dreams of acceptance, family, utopia, safety, and then also fear and pain. . . . At its core, drumming, like scoring for moving image and story, is about creating and managing tension. I made many sketches responding to the elements that haunted me -- things that perhaps had happened or been felt or thought of by children or adults there. Situations, colors, visuals. The music in turn created new stories, new sights, and new tensions. It was like making music to score -- and simultaneously to create and direct -- imagined scenes of an imagined film." Morgan is perhaps best known for his work with two of the finest songwriters of his generation, Joanna Newsom and Bill Callahan. He first accompanied Newsom in 2006, when he arranged drums and percussion for the live performance of her classic second album Ys (2006) and began performing as a part of her touring band. He arranged and performed all of the drums and percussion on Newsom's triple album Have One On Me (2010) and on three of the songs from Divers (2015). He began playing with Callahan as a duo in 2009 and arranged and performed drums and percussion on Apocalypse (2011). Screen printed in Portland at The Make House; Hand-painted by Morgan in Berkeley. Includes a fold-out insert designed by the artist and a download code; Edition of 100.

DON'T DJ Gammellan 12"
2017 repress. "Florian Meyer back on BH, with ten minutes of gamelan psychedelia, subtly and tensely minimalist as Terrence Dixon at his best. On the flip, Dresvn takes more of a beeline to Detroit, fuelled by submerged classics like UR's Coinochime ? cosmic, but deadly and unsettling. ('Gammel' means 'junk', in German. Maybe Magellan the explorer permeates that title, too, going round in circles in the East Indies, giddy and gammy below decks, amidst his trophy exotica)."

FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS, LEE Special Night Instrumentals LP
"The instrumental version of the instant classic Special Night by Lee Fields & The Expressions. Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering. Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. 'When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I'm talking to my lady -- literally, expressing the way I feel.' says Lee Fields. 'You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I'm recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life.' For one example, he cites the song 'Work to Do,' which tells the story of 'a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing.' On 'Make This World,' Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. 'The world was designed to last indefinitely,' says Fields. 'We're the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I'm hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through.' As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the boundaries 'Never Be Another You' from the first note doesn't sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A low tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of 2017. Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it.' --Danny Akalepse"

ALLIEN, ELLEN Nost CD
Ellen Allien's seventh solo album Nost, which comes from nostalgia, is the quintessential sound of Berlin. It has a sensibility which can only be found in the depths of the city's darkest underground clubs. The album begins with an expert lesson in hypnosis with "Mind Journey"; a warped vocal lures you into its creepy world, while a persistent beat, narcotic bassline, and spine-tingling eerie top-end builds an intense, immersive vibe. "Innocence" channels the loose atmosphere of a Berlin dancefloor, with its insistent energy conjuring up images of a clandestine warehouse soiree. "Jack My Ass" is a whirring, utterly captivating dancefloor treat with tension building rises in energy, built to create moments of pure exhilaration; techno from the 23rd Century, built by a modern-day master. "Call Me" sees Ellen inject sexy vibes but keeps it strictly jackin'; Berlin's unmistakable vibe is blended with the classic sound of Chicago. "Electric Eye" follows with its emotive riff, again transmitting a lucid, hypnotic rhythm. Ellen demonstrates her expertise in warping vocals, and combines it with deadly techno elements. "mma" is a snarling beast of a track with dramatic strings creating a hair-raising atmosphere and a mesmerizing riff. "Physical" is a message from future inhabitants of our universe -- the beats are crisp and powerful, while a symphony of analog effects cascade through the background. All the while a vocal clip appears once in a while, saying "Physical" -- adding a strange human element to proceedings. The penultimate track is "Stormy Memories", which opens with an extended, emotive intro, slowly building into a brooding acid-tinged workout with that classic 303 sound bubbling away in the low-end. Closing out this masterful selection is "Erdmond", a delicate, hazy soundscape that feels like the "morning after the night before", the sun blazing into your room through a gap in the curtain, a variety of electronic critters chirping and calling to one another and your head slowly shedding the layers of fuzz to reveal memories of last night. Like in all of her albums, Ellen uses her vocals like an instrument through alienation in many different ways. Nost is a homage to the feeling of nostalgia, that Ellen knows just too good, and that happens quite often to her, when she plays her DJ sets: This incredible, warm feeling, when she drops one of the old classic records, that she loves, and the people start smiling.

CANTU/RIVAL, D'MARC Omega Red 12"
D'Marc Cantu's second release on Drone is an introspective, emotive piece of electro. With its deep pads, "Omega Red" provides the soundtrack to a trek through the snowy wastes, never letting up and calling through the night. In contrast, under his Rival alias, Cantu delivers "Sustain", a ferocious track with monotonous drum lines that slowly takes you into the night. Rival has, since its inception, been about exploring the limitations of a single, one-take session. Taking the principles of a live set and applying them with gear that would ordinarily be left in the studio adds an uncertainty and urgency.

MINA Sentah 12"
One of the UK's most promising new producers is back after the release of her 2016 single Kabala, confirming FACT's expectations when they named her one of the "10 Club Producers to Watch in 2016". Inspired by her travels in Ghana, where she met and recorded with stand-out local MCs and producers Bryte, Gafacci, and Cratus, as well as the more tropical side of the UK music scene where she found Peruvian vocalist Nané and Italian producer Lorenzo BITW, Sentah is Mina's love letter to Afrobeats, dancehall, UK funk, and all kinds of syncopated rhythms. If Kabala's sunny melodies and compelling rhythms were any indication of the sheer potential of this up-and-coming producer, Sentah is here to confirm Mina's place on top of the global club music food chain, as she teams up with a host of collaborators from around the world to shape her musical vision. From the energizing beats and Spanish vocals of "Boing", featuring Nané, to the lively rhythm of the marimba-heavy title track "Sentah", the slinky hypnotizing melodies of "Ringtone Riddim", the dancefloor-focused energy of "Circles", and the slowed-down Caribbean flex of "Only", on Sentah, Mina leads the listener on a vibrant journey.

Following on from the very robust debut of his own label Failsafe (FAS 001EP), Juxta Position deviates back to the more melancholic aesthetic with which he initially made his mark back in 2013 on Mistress Recordings. Drawing palpable influence from ambient electronica like Boards Of Canada, he then reframes the aesthetic, with the help of rhythmic anchoring, on the 12 minute opening opus "Eureka". However, not to disappoint lovers of the slightly harder, more up-tempo, electronic beat, the flip then dishes up two significantly more pressurized techno pieces, the former "Made In Belgrade" more linear, the latter, "Reimagined", more flamboyant.

SUPERPITCHER The Golden Ravedays 6 LP
Musically and emotionally, Superpitcher's third full-length studio album, The Golden Ravedays, is a one sound autobiography that exhibits the skill, feeling, and style that the artist has honed over a period of twenty years, musically, and forty-plus-years, emotionally. And full-length it is: The Golden Ravedays is an epic album of 24 tracks stretching over 12 respective chapter albums, released on Hippie Dance sequentially during a one-year period. The sixth piece of The Golden Ravedays puzzle introduces two further tracks of the sound adventure that Superpitcher is taking his listeners on. Side A features "Protest Song". If music is a way of transporting us to other places, "Protest Song" takes its listeners to a desolate, scary, and loveless environment, a burnt-down, burnt-out place where the flesh of its former inhabitants is smoldering, void of goodwill and kindness, in a cloud of toxic and greedy smoke. It's all Kafka and Orwell and suffering -- the most twisted and eerie track so far in The Golden Ravedays saga. What is undeniably clear is an acute sense of regret and loss -- a warning that it could have been avoided, had we only listened to our hearts and protested. In the same vein, on Side B is "Resistance". Produced after the Paris attacks of 2015, Superpitcher outdid himself with this strong message of resistance. Where "Protest Song" paints a picture of under-worldly doom, the techno beat and insistent refrain of "Resistance" sweeps the listener to the surface of the muck of hatred and intolerance we've politically been dumped in. A voice that seems like a trapped animal is calling out. What is it trying to say? Is it crying out for help? Is that animal all of us? "Resistance" represents hope and encouragement and could be the perfect marching track to any demonstration against negative forces. Much needed in this age of bigotry where it seems like time has leaped backwards to a darker side of history. As for the dancefloor -- "Resistance" is irresistible!

Born in 1943 in Ikole-Ekiti in Ondo State, Nigeria, Orlando Julius Ekemode (Orlando was really a nickname, taken from the Nigerian actor, Orlando Martins) started in music at an early age, becoming the school drummer and learning flute, bugle, and other instruments at St Peters Anglican School in Ikole-Ekiti. A Nigerian musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he is credited as one of the first musicians to fuse US R&B into traditional highlife music, creating his own influential Afrobeat sound during the mid-60s. From his time playing in the USA during the 1970s onwards, he is credited with bringing African music to a broader audience and famously co-composed the song "Going Back To My Roots" with Lamont Dozier. In 1978, Orlando Julius Ekemode decided to produce this amazing session, originally recorded between Maryland and West Virginia, and released in limited quantity in Nigeria by the obscure label Jungle Records. Six stunning monster Afro funk tracks, recorded by eight musicians based in Oakland. Fully licensed with the artist and remastered by Carvery. Essential!

Although called Aquarius Dub, the tracks that make up this album were cut at Dynamic Sounds, Harry J's and Randy's Studio 17. It was not long after this release that Herman opened the first ever twenty-four track studio Aquarius Studios. LE TOUGH, MANO Arganol 'N' All 12"
Mano Le Tough releases his second 12" on Maeve, the label he co-founded with Baikal and The Drifter in 2012. "Big Words From The Small Mouth" arrives with quite the clatter. Searing synth jams scatter over a brooding kick/sub bass combo. The sharp crisp percussion drives the track forward, while various bleets, squeals, and swells give the track a raw rave vibe. "Arganol" is a trippy affair. Touching nine minutes long, the narrative unravels through woozy melodies and melancholic cameos, culminating in a burst of movement and energy perfect for the wee hours of a dancefloor.

MAGAS Explanatory Denial 12"
"Magas's limited-to-200 4-track spring 2017 12" EP Explanatory Denial opens A1 with 'Shipping Container', a rough, minimal stomper, offering plenty of bounce, but no padding or instructions. A2's 'New Dawn' opens the door to a brightly-lit and concrete alternate reality. B1's 'Sky Castles' keeps bodies moving while synthesized strings whisper false reassurances of easy days and high pay. The closer, 'Indelible Mark' is an atmospheric lo-fi Casio and Rhodes lounge-funk spy groover that smells of Holiday Inn wood-paneling, dripping with Benson & Hedges Ultra-lite 100s. Deploying a variety of primitive electronic techniques, Explanatory Denial is a testament to the power of diligent synth-hunting and decades of basement refinement. Explanatory Denial is the 7th record by Chicago-based electronic producer Jim Magas under his longtime Magas moniker. In the '90s, he fronted unconventional 'no wave'-ish bands Couch and Lake Of Dracula. In the early 2000s, he recorded for material for Ersatz Audio and did a few remixes. In the Twenty-teens, he focused on instrumental productions for his own Midwich imprint and composing music for director Asia Argento's 2014 film, Misunderstood. In early 2017, Magas premiered new material during a U.S. tour in support of band Joan of Arc. Explanatory Denial is the first entry into Midwich Red, a series of no-frills, minimally-packaged, club-friendly, limited edition 12"s."

MUKQS 11,666,666,666,666,666,666 LP
"Maxwell Allison records improvised loop-based electronic music under the name Mukqs. 11,666,666,666,666,666,666, his first LP with Chicago imprint Midwich Productions, documents a session of intertwined synth melodies and technoid beat arrangements recorded live and presented without overdubs. Previous tape releases compiling live takes of textured noise and deranged sample manipulation using cassette tapes as sound sources appeared on labels like Phinery, Apothecary Compositions, and Hausu Mountain (co-run by Allison himself and Doug Kaplan). Allison and Kaplan perform with Natalie Chami in Chicago free music trio Good Willsmith, whose abstracted electronic rock jams and space drone ritual performances aim for a state of overloaded chaos. On 11,666,666,666,666,666, Allison sheds the randomized and abrasive aspects of past free-for-all jams and latches into an elastic pulse of syncopated basslines and complex percussion patterns pumped from a minimal hardware rig of drum machine and sampler. The LP evokes the subaquatic atmospheres and evolving analog arrangements of Drexciya, the recursive melodic ecstasy of Terry Riley, and the cyborg tonal juxtapositions of Oneohtrix Point Never. Mukqs's arrangements pit the insistence of a rigid grid against a system of arrhythmic synth samples that intersect with a loose logic all their own. Brittle vocal and flute preset tones clash with chordal clouds of sustain and swelling drones, as a network of hi-hat and snare patterns click a path through the center of the mix. Allison's thick bass bursts dominate the stereo spread, animating grooves and harmonizing in distortion with a web of crisp triangle wave arpeggios. His session stretches from the loping electro thump and siren synth walls of 'The Tulpoid Serpent' into the zen bongos and syrupy pads of 'Neo-Venezia.' 'Frog Work' hits a stride of major-key bliss when xylophone cascades blend with sitar tones over a 4/4 stomp, as if soundtracking a Studio Ghibli-core movie of Allison's own invention. 'Hashimoto-Appelbaum Syndrome' closes the LP with a palette of juxtaposed textures painted in kinetic rhythms: compounded organ lines mingle with vocaloid chirps and a lattice of pitch-shifted cymbals, as a chopped and screwed flute melody holds down the low end with faux-upright bass. If Mukqs's strict adherence to a live take/no overdubs recording regimen betrays a mentality closer to the noise underground, 11,666,666,666,666,666,666 elevates his stubborn practice to new heights of analog synth arrangement and cosmic density."

DECA Mass LP
Deca (Federico De Caroli), composer and musician graduated in piano for over 30 years, is a protagonist of the Italian electronic and experimental scene, approaching other fields such as theater, multimedia, and television. A great summoner of dream suggestions, he started with the lessons of cosmic school, arriving at a personal alchemy of tradition and innovation, clutching the paradigms of artificial sound on the natural one. He began playing in 1975, and in 1983 he bought his first synthesizer, starting a long process of creative evolution, playing in parallel bands that are inspired by the British new wave, with such bands as Joy Division, The Cure, and Killing Joke, and studying the dynamics of synthetic sound. In 1985, he began his solo record productions career based on linear sequencer plots and minimal compositions that refer to already famous authors of electronic music, like Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, and Vangelis, and the so-called kosmische music of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. Mass was produced in 1987/1988 with a Roland synthesizer and it was only distributed on cassette in limited edition. It is a more rhythmic album than his other works of the time, and ranks as the third of his discography, after the very collected Alkaid (1986) and Synthetic Lips (1987). It is a dark and minimalist electro-wave album comprised of states of strongly dark and distressed moods. The cover art, as for all his albums, was created by Deca.

CRISTIANI, GIOVANNI Alpha Percussion LP
Mondo Groove present a reissue of Giovanni Cristiani's Alpha Percussion, originally released in 1985. Alpha Percussion is a cult groovy ambient album of acoustic percussion, pleasant to listen to and full of samples and breaks known very well by DJs and artists like Danny Brown, who used a sample of "Fragments Of Crystal" in "Really Doe", a song off his album Atrocity Exhibition (2016). Giovanni Cristiani is one of the most prepared and complete Italian percussionists. Born in Rome in 1952, he graduated in percussion at a young age and began playing professionally in Italy and abroad. In 1979, after years of activity at the side of the most popular jazz musicians, he constituted the Music Workshop A.D.E.L., playing drums and developing percussion courses. Penta Flowers, a Beat Records Company sub-label and publisher, asked him to make a solo percussion library music album in full artistic freedom that was pressed in limited edition for insiders; so was born Alpha Percussion, a gem now finally accessible, all thanks to the Mondo Groove label.

GARLAND, PETER The Birthday Party CD
"On first hearing, the piano music of Peter Garland (b. 1952) creates a feeling of dislocation, then astonishment: It is so very different from the contemporary concert music we are familiar with. The composer's intent, his emotional directness is immediate -- despite the unusual sound world and different sense of time that these pieces exhibit. The three pieces on this CD, 'The Birthday Party' (2014), 'Blessingway' (2011-12) and 'Amulet' (After Roberto Bolaño) for 4 pianos (2010), are quite different in nature from much of Garland's previous writing for piano, more lyrical than dramatic in feeling. The Birthday Party in particular is the work of an artist looking back -- pensive, even nostalgic, open to musical associations. The Birthday Party is explicitly a study in both memory and loss; in Garland's own words it is not just a 'toast' to Aki Takahashi, the dedicatee, on her birthday, but also to '. . . those who are still with us [and to] our friends and loved ones who are no longer alive.' Blessingway takes its title from a Navajo ceremony, but its use here must be seen as reflecting a purely personal association of some kind for Garland rather than any literary or musical connection to the ceremony in the piece. . . . 'Amulet' was written for Aki Takahashi. She herself consecutively recorded all four parts before they were mixed down. Garland's original concept, explained in his introduction to the piece, was '. . . that these are not four separate pianos; but rather they form one big piano, the sum of their parts.' "

MEDIUM MEDIUM The Glitterhouse 2LP + 12"
Expanded reissue of Medium Medium's debut album, The Glitterhouse, originally released on Cherry Red in October 1981. Formed at the end of 1978, Medium Medium's self-described "extreme dance music" had reviewers scrambling to draw comparisons with the band's contemporaries and find a label for its post punk sound. Medium Medium's solid dance rhythms and chaotic, chiming guitar were superficially reminiscent of the Gang Of Four and Talking Heads, but Rees's tangential sax playing and Graham's tape and keyboard interjections from the front-of-house mixing desk, took Medium Medium in another direction. "Free-blown dubbed-up white funk" was how Max Bell described the sound in England's New Musical Express (NME). "At the forefront of the post punk funk movement," raved Cashbox. The U.S. Billboard magazine opined that this was "post punk and post disco dance music." After the initial release of The Glitterhouse, In Sound International magazine Dave Henderson wrote prophetically, "It could be one of the most important records of the type to emerge this year and will doubtlessly be revered as a classic after the group have long since departed." This reissue also features the "Hungry, So Angry" single version which was produced by Adrian Sherwood at Berry Street Studio in London. Also included is a selection of tracks from Cherry Red's 2001 Hungry, So Angry retrospective compilation album, the B-side of the band's debut single on Apt (1979), and a previously unreleased demo version of a song from the 1982 Sound-Products EP, Splendid Isolation. It includes a bonus EP featuring previously unreleased tracks from the 2008 Village recording session. All of the various lineups of Medium Medium are represented. "Probe 3" is more acidic outing - although never resorting to the iconic 303, the track is a lysergic journey into dubbed out tech-house. "Groundlevel" is a driving, loopy groover that uses ludin's feel for atmosphere and tension to the max.

MAELSTROM Her Empty Eyes 2x12"
RAAR present the first full-length album from label co-founder Maelstrom, entitled Her Empty Eyes. Both an evolution of the producer's rich history and an intellectual departure from its predecessors, Her Empty Eyes is a work that is uncanny, challenging, and meditative. Continuing upon the cross-media mission of RAAR, the LP is the outline of a sonic novel. Maelstrom describes: "During the last 12 months, my music started to become the soundtrack of an imaginary novel taking place between 1936 and 1939 in Spain. The novel depicts the life of Marina, a news photographer covering the war during these four years, meeting John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway at 'Hotel Florida' in Madrid, George Orwell and Buenaventura Durruti on the frontline, or anonymous volunteers of the International Brigades in Barcelona. We follow her investigating the death of Jose Robles, a Spanish intellectual who was allegedly killed by members of the soviet secret police lead by Alexander Orlov, also believed to be responsible for the torture and death of Andres Nin, leader of the POUM, during Barcelona's 'May Days' of 1937. While looking into the murder, Marina keeps on covering the war for international magazines, travelling with the Lincoln Brigade during the Battle Of Jarama or with Spanish civilians fleeing Malaga by the road as bombs fall and planes strafe the ground with machine-gun fire. . . . The album's title refers to our heroine's untimely demise, and the evidence of what was captured in her empty eyes, burned forever into the film in her precious Leica." Maelstrom explains the recording process: "My recording method has drastically changed since I started experimenting with Milton H. Erickson's self-hypnosis techniques about a year ago. I went from overthinking every part of the recording process multiple times over, resulting in dozens of versions of each of my tracks, to a state where thinking wasn't part of the equation anymore. Self-hypnosis is quite impossible to describe -- more than anything, it's a way to fully exist in the present. After a few weeks of experimentation, it became possible for me to record tracks in one take, without feeling any urge to refine or rework them. I would switch on the studio, work on a sound palette, and then press play and record, every day." Rather than focusing on club bangers, Maelstrom depicts a future of techno that is intellectual, historical, spiritual, and emotional.

ATKINSON, FELICIA Hand In Hand CD
Félicia Atkinson's new full-length album, Hand In Hand follows the highly-acclaimed A Readymade Ceremony (SHELTER 055CD/LP, 2015), and her collaboration with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Comme Un Seul Narcisse (SHELTER 070LP, 2016). Composed over 2016 at EMS and at home in Brittany, Hand In Hand could be considered as the most ambitious body of work recorded by the French musician and artist. Strident modular sounds tear apart minimal beats and drones; Fictional stories told by a voice slowly become reality. Hand In Hand is meant to be a moment of common thinking and listening, in its diversity and abstraction. In the same way a sci-fi novel by Philip K. Dick or a sculpture by Guy Mees can be perceived: trivial, sensitive, and mysterious at the same time. "I'm Following You" is a bleached romantic ballad for Fender Rhodes that could be the ending title of a martian love story, whereas "Visnaga" praises the resources of a desert plant through asmr voices, field recordings, and evasive chords. "A House A Dance A Poem" is a feminist hymn composed as a pyramidal structure, referring, at the same time, to the A-frame houses, the yoga position of the triangle, the first letter of the Roman alphabet, and the feminine sex. In the closing song, "No Fear But Anticipation", Atkinson offers an open-hearted plea about the existentialist necessity of finding desire even when the times seem too dark to think about it. A telepathic and non-scholastic anthem for Don Delillo, Joan Didion, and Jean Paul Sartre. The final Buchla sounds that close the record seem to deliver an unspeakable message that only birds and aliens could transcript. The echo of the '80s sci-fi anxious aethetics resonates with today's transparency of digital sounds in the whole record. The cohabitation of simple midi textures and historical Serge and Buchla signals are convoked and confronted together by a voice. The human instrument appears here as the epicenter of the recordings, giving the other instruments a gravitational point. Joan La Barbara, Robert Ashley, or Delia Derbyshire are the main influences of Atkinson in their own way of inviting fiction and abstraction as the essential materials of composition. For Hand In Hand, Félicia Atkinson used different sources for the lyrics and scores of her tracks: house plant instruction books, old issues of Desert Magazine, architecture manuals, JG Ballard and K. Dick's books, as well as her own poetry.

TABAKIN, JON Jon Tabakin LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. 180 gram vinyl. Edition of 500. Tapete present the first reissue of Jon Tabakin's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. After spending his teen years in local bands, Tabakin had a motorcycle accident at the age of 19. This experience turned his attention inward, focusing on musical composition and poetry, rather than performing. After graduating, he wanted to sell the songs he had written during that time, which would become his sole record. He bought a Teac 4-track and laid down keys, guitar, and vocals himself, in his apartment. The rhythm section was added on later in the studio, with Tabakin overdubbing the bass. The record was pressed up under the banner of Larrow Records and sold a few copies locally, but ultimately went nowhere. Disheartened by the lack of interest, Tabakin switched his focus from pop writing to more classically-influenced piano improvisations. Tapes of these recordings ended up with RCA, who thought he was ready to "break-out" -- but his reluctance to tour as an improvisational pianist nixed the deal. After this second opportunity petered out, he all but turned his back on music and went on to graduate studies, eventually becoming a psychoanalyst. Tabakin's self-titled effort is one of the best kept secrets of pop music. Now a highly-coveted collector's album, the songs sit together and mesh so perfectly, despite each track having its own distinct personality. It's an ode to pop music, all-encompassing and intensely personal at the same time. Some internet comments about Jon Tabakin: "I can't tell you how happy I am to own this LP. It's fantastic lo-fi, very authentic Todd Rundgren inspired pop. His voice isn't perfect, but that's fine, his passion is infectious. This is not a record filled with radio ready pop songs but it's a grower; it has a slow burn. It's a perfect expression of one guy's musical enthusiasm." "Incredible and super obscuro homemade 70s outsider folk rock singer songwriter. Hard to classify, especially because the instrumentation varies from song to song. There's a strong Brian Wilson west coast 60s sunshine pop recluse undercurrent throughout, with the strange addition of prominent 70s progressive keyboard/organ moves on several tracks. This guy obviously spent many hours orchestrating this material, and there's plenty here to keep things interesting for repeated listens."

HELM World In Action 12"
"Recorded across East London, South-East Kent and Snaresbrook Crown Court during what is described as 'the UK media's attempt at divining integrity from the orchestrated turbulence of Brexit', with the record setting out to 'juggle the documentation of this particular moment with the desire to discern motivation from despair'. World In Action takes in field recordings, woodwind freakouts and percussion from Valentina Magaletti amongst other elements." --The Quietus

KAPOTE The Body Move 12"
Kapote returns with another deep funk house EP on Toy Tonics. Slap bass, Wurlitzer jazz pianos, old school house drum machines, nasty talks. This three-tracker continues the vibe of his last single "The Nose" (TOYT 060EP, 2016). This is slow grooving dance music without stress. Jazz funk inspired mid- tempo house with live played bass, keyboards, and lot of warm harmonies. In fact, Kapote used to play keyboards and bass in jazz bands before getting absorbed by dance music culture. He is a big fan of late '60s hard bop jazz, as well as '70s jazz funk and disco.

AVATISM I Was Warned About People Like Us 12"
After a three-year hiatus from his Avatism moniker, Thomas Feriero, one half of CW/A and owner of Parachute records, returns with an EP for his home label Vakant. A rough yet refined release, unassuming in its effort, Thomas channels both his previous solo work and his CW/A project into a tightly wound package with four solid cuts. Various influences converge yet a straight line is etched for all to follow. These are up-front, hard-working tracks. Body music with an undercurrent of breakbeat.

WOE Hope Attrition CD
US black metal legion, Woe release their long-awaited full-length Hope Attrition, their first since 2014. Featuring founding guitarist and vocalist Chris Grigg alongside a monster lineup of longtime contributing bassist Grzesiek Czapla, guitarist Matt Mewton, and drummer Lev Weinstein, Hope Attrition is a dark, mournful work that draws from their darkest black metal influences, while drawing out dormant death metal undertones, bolstered by the crushing production of renowned engineer Stephen DeAcutis (Evoken, Dim Mak). "Hope Attrition is the result of the most intense writing and demoing process since the first album," says Grigg of the record's manifestation. "The long break from playing and performing gave me the opportunity to approach Woe with a renewed energy and perspective. The world itself provided the ultimate motivation and pushed us darker, heavier, more oppressive, resulting in the strongest work in our catalog. We are particularly proud to be working with Vendetta on this release, as they are a partner who shares our dedication to our art." Artwork by Justin Miller who has handled artwork for all of Woe's past releases. Additionally, the band's logo has been reimagined by legendary logo artist Equitant.

HEXER Cosmic Doom Ritual LP
LP version. Three tracks and 34-minutes of cosmic doom metal was just what the doctor ordered. Hexer's surprisingly tactful use of melody, nuance, and feel, drifts beneath cataclysmic slabs of sludge and doom, creating an intriguing sonic landscape that retains the listener's interest for the majority of the album. Hexer is a four-piece outfit from Germany, combining doom and black metal with oriental tunes, repetitive riffs, drone, and atmospheric soundscapes. Their debut album Cosmic Doom Ritual, tells the story of a cosmic journey through deepest blackness, being devoured by a giant sea creature and the discovery of a surreal place, mixing mythological elements with sci-fi. Low-tuned strings and heavy sub-bass, provided by an analog synth, create a meditative yet ominous atmosphere. Hexer is a band that oozes atmosphere and immersion. Long live cosmic doom. CATZ 'N DOGZ Watergate 22 EP #1 12"
Flying high after their successful Watergate 22 compilation (WG 022CD, 2017), Catz N' Dogz return to deliver eight exclusive tracks from their mix via two EPs. #1 commences with "Fire Burning When We Are", a tune that sees them flying solo -- a journey that lands somewhere between Carl Craig and Henrik Schwarz. "Afterglow" follows suit with an attitude infused vocal from Shaun J. Wright. Prosumer reworks "Fire Burning When We Are" and creates a massive tune with the signature Prosumer touch. Sebo K turns in a jackin' remake of "Afterglow", keeping everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

VA Watergate 22 EP #2 12"
EP #2 kicks things off with a bang. First up is Catz 'N Dogz and Yotam Avni's "Blakkat", a high pace burner. The duo return with the "Bright Version" of "Afterglow" pushing an intense, glitter filled ride to its limits. "O.A. Peas", from heavy-hitters Eats Everything and Lord Leopard, takes a trip down memory lane with a heavily sample-based, feel good tune. Rounding out the EP is a final collaboration between Catz 'N Dogz and Reno Wurzbacher with "To Ma People" and it's by far the smoothest and most laid back tune of the bundle.

MAINETTI, STEFANO Zombi 3 Soundtrack (Special Version/Green Vinyl) LP
Green-inferno vinyl version. Special DJ Blue Heart version, with included skits/interludes from the movie. Heavy cardboard Stoughton Tip-On jacket; Green Japanese Sanguelia 2 VHS obi; 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 400. We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records unleash the complete uncut soundtrack for Lucio Fulci and Bruno Mattei's 1988 cult zombie-ploitation gem Zombi 3 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters 2, aka Sanguelia 2) for the first time ever on vinyl, available on two different collector's edition vinyl, the "Classic Version" and the "Special Version". This future deluxe edition OOP classic is packed with menacing synths, ghoulish melodies, and contaminated anthems, remastered directly from the rare original reels of maestro Stefano Mainetti. Zombi 3 is the (unrelated) sequel to Zombi 2 (1979), itself an unofficial sequel to George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead (1978). This marvel of the VHS-era finds a group of super scientists working on a very secret biological weapon called Death One which mutates and kills living humans... and re-animates the dead. Feared by critics and beloved by vintage exploitation fanatics, Zombi 3 has all the charms of the glory days of Italian B-horror, including a fantastic soundtrack. Underrated composer and conductor Stefano Mainetti has done soundtracks for Italian sleaze masters Joe D'Amato and Bruno Mattei, but also for Weekend at Bernie's (1989) and First Blood (1982) director Ted Kotcheff, and Russell Mulcahy of Razorback (1984) and Highlander (1986) fame. His resume includes 1988's badass actioner Strike Commando 2 (aka Trappola Diabolica), exploitation horror flick from 1988 Ratman (aka Quella Villa In Fondo Al Parco), and 1995's The Shooter (aka Hidden Assassin) with the manly superstar Dolph Lundgren. Much like his Italian peers Fabio Frizzi, Claudio Simonetti, or Stelvio Cipriani, Stefano Mainetti can do it all: haunting synths à la John Carpenter, jazzy atmospheres, classical orchestrations, erotic funk, decadent FM rock, and the list goes on. His eclectic abilities and flair for '80s cinematic moods are well represented in Zombi 3: The Soundtrack.

JAAR, NICOLAS A Time For Us/Mi Mujer 12"
2017 repress. Dreamt up while living at the Marcy, Wolf + Lamb's infamous fake hotel, Nicolas Jaar presents two slow and enveloping productions, adding a new dimension to his signature sound. The track's tempo slides down the scale at its peak and sensual spoken passages ooze through the gaps. "Time For Us" moves away from formulaic club music and inspires with its dynamic approach. Seth Troxler has laced it with admiration and the record was even unleashed at Burning Man.
