LEVENT LeVent CD
LeVent are Maryna Russo (bass), Heike Rädeker (bass VI/vox), and Frankie Neumeier (drums). Berlin based trio LeVent got stoned, forgot to replace their guitarist, and then kept his name anyway. Formed in August 2015, the band has kept their shit together enough to have shared the stage with a bunch of talents including Kadavar, The Underground Youth, and Die Nerven, to name a few. They also self-released a four-track EP on cassette in 2016. LeVent is their debut album, released on A Recordings. Like a drunken driver, LeVent swerves up over the curb, drives straight through the garage, and totals their ride somewhere out in a goat farm. Bleating at its most danceable, they carry listeners far away to get lost in nice nonsense, stuck in heavy forgetting, and transfixed on what was, leaving you thirsty for more. Heike, from the band, says, "When someone comes up to you after a concert saying 'I'm going to make you a record' you are stoked for the moment, but you don´t reckon it will happen..." Half a year later Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre called LeVent in to his Cobra Studio in Berlin. Teaming up with studio engineer Andrea Wright from Parr Street Studios Liverpool, the red button got pushed. After what was a super pleasant experience of recording and mixing, they are now ready to present LeVent.

PAYNE, MAGGI Crystal LP
Aguirre Records present a reissue of Maggi Payne's challenging electronic album Crystal, originally released in 1986. Maggi Payne is an American composer, flutist, video artist, and co-director of the Center for Contemporary Music, Mills College where she teaches recording engineering, composition, and electronic music. Her work involves electroacoustic, instrumental, and vocal works along with works involving visuals, including dancers outfitted with electroluminescent wire and videos she creates using images ranging from nature to the abstract. She has composed music for dance, theatre, and video. Crystal was first released in 1986 on the Lovely Music label. Home to experimental musicians such as Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Pauline Oliveros, and Alvin Lucier. On Crystal, flute, spoken voice, sonifications, and synthesizers are processed to create dense and massive structures. Maggi Payne's musical imagination is vivid: she is interested in the surreal, the inward, the micro, and the accumulation of physical and psychological tension. Periods of silence gently evolve into flowing drones of complex resonances. Oozing drones evolve into dense and powerful peaks of short duration. The compositions and sounds on Crystal have incredible depth, a profound logic and, though not "pretty", an irresistible beauty. 180 gram vinyl; Remastered and cut at 45rpm by Rashad Becker; Gatefold sleeve with liner notes by the artist; Artwork by Atelier Brenda.Maggi Payne on Crystal: "I create immersive environments, inviting listeners/participants to enter the sound and be carried with it, experiencing it from the inside out in intimate detail. The sounds are almost tactile, visible, tangible. A narrative of the imagination exists, allowing each person experiencing the work to thread their own paths through their mind's imagination and their body's physical engagement. Each sound slowly unfolds, revealing intricacies and complexity. Each grows and evolves like crystals forming under the microscope. . . . I visualize the sound as originating from, for instance, a point source below where one is standing, then it swirls outward and upward in an ever-expanding spiral until it disappears high over the listener's head, morphing as it travels. Spatialization is not imposed when mixing, but is instead created in the original recording by increasing the amplitude of the sound on one track then decreasing its amplitude as the identical frequency is matched on the next track while it is increasing its amplitude, dovetailing the tracks across the space. Using extensive multi-tracking, the spatialization is retained, architecting and sculpting the aural space so that multiple perspectives and trajectories coexist."

ANDROMEDA MEGA EXPRESS ORCHESTRA Vula 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Includes download code. Berlin's Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra returns with its fourth album Vula. Having celebrated their ten-year anniversary with a stunning series of concerts in 2016, the 18-piece's new full-length showcases a stronger focus on harmony and melody -- and yet AMEO sound no less explosive or unpredictable than before. It arrives gently, with shimmering lights, soft winds, sashaying melodies, and of course, the isotherms and isotheres function just as they should: All of a sudden, lighting strikes amid the concord of instruments, unforeseen energies erupt and upset the rhythmic scenery. Making a combined effort to create sheltering patches of harmony within the unfolding drama, leader Daniel Glatzel and his 18-piece "working band" set out to harness album number four: Vula. Another musical tour de force that connects too many dots, decades, traditions and genres to mention, Vula is quite a different beast compared to its live predecessor or the orchestra's last studio effort Bum Bum (N 029CD/LP, 2012): There's bigger, bolder strokes, and the compositions are linked by recurring motifs and harmonies, which is why the new album sounds like one entity: It is one hour-long adventure that needs to be listened to in full. The title Vula, taken from the Tumbuka language (spoken in the northern region of Malawi), indeed translates to tempest or thunderstorm. Ranging from softly trickling melodies courtesy of older masters ("Lakta Mata Ha") and hazy interludes, the mood, vibe, and pace change faster than cloud formations come flying across the screens nowadays (e.g. "Qwetoipntv Vjadfklvjieop" with its arrangement a` la H. Lachenmann). Head-nod bliss, motion picture soundtrack vibes, and even J.B. licks aren't mutually exclusive in these compositions, as AMEO showcase with "J Schleia", a track that nods both to Dilla/Grandmaster Flash and to Bach-era counterpoint techniques. Elsewhere, a pounding surf-rock beat metamorphoses over the course of 14 minutes ("In The Light Of Turmoil"), only to see them return to patches that are surprisingly catchy and calm. The final applause turns out just as thunderous though, after the album ends with the vibrant and throbbing "Papaya Flyers IX Epsylon", a live recording that already foreshadows the group's later collaboration with Hermeto Pascoal. The entire process, from writing to intricate post-production, took almost five years.

VA Pop Makossa: The Invasive Dance Beat of Cameroon 1976-1984 CD
The Pop Makossa adventure started in 2009, when Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb first travelled to Cameroon to make an initial assessment of the country's musical situation. He returned with enough tracks for an explosive compilation highlighting the period when funk and disco sounds began to infiltrate the makossa style popular throughout Cameroon. From the very beginning, there were several mysteries hanging over Pop Makossa. It was not until DJ and music producer Déni Shain was dispatched to Cameroon to finalize the project, license the songs, scan photographs, and interview the artists that some of the biggest question marks began to disappear. His journey from the port city of Douala to the capital of Yaoundé brought him in contact with the lives and stories of many of the musicians who had shaped the sound of Cameroon's dance music in its most fertile decade. The beat that holds everything together has its origins in the rhythms of the Sawa people: ambassey, bolobo, assiko and essewé, a traditional funeral dance. But it wasn't until these rhythms arrived in the cities of Cameroon and collided with merengue, high-life, Congolese rumba, and, later, funk and disco, that modern makossa was born. Makossa managed to unify the whole of Cameroon, and it was successful in part because it was so adaptable. Some of the greatest makossa hits incorporated the electrifying guitars and tight grooves of funk, while others were laced with cosmic flourishes made possible by the advent of the synthesizer. However much came down to the bass; and from the rubbery hustle underpinning Mystic Djim's "Yaoundé Girls" to the luminous liquid disco lines which propel Pasteur Lappé's "Sekele Movement", Pop Makossa demonstrates why Cameroonian bass players are some of the most revered in the world. "Pop Makossa Invasion", an obscure tune recorded for Radio Buea makes its debut here and joins the pantheon of extraordinary songs that plugged Cameroon's makossa style into the modern world. Also features: Dream Stars, Mystic Djim & The Spirits, Bill Loko, Eko, Olinga Gaston, Emmanuel Kahe et Jeanette Kemogne, Nkodo Si-Tony, Bernard Ntone, Pat' Ndoye, and Clément Djimogne. CD version includes a 44-page booklet.

VA Afro-Beat Airways 2LP
2017 repress; Deluxe gatefold 2LP version, featuring 2 extra tracks not included on the CD. Includes a poster and full-color innersleeves replicating the complete notes from the CD version. Organ-driven Afro-beat, cosmic Afro-funk and raw, psychedelic boogie -- just some of the flavors to be found on this highly danceable compilation by Samy Ben Redjeb, founder of Analog Africa. No effort has been spared! To document these irresistible tracks and the music scene from the '70s, Samy crisscrossed the lengths of Ghana and Togo in search of the producers and artists -- or their relatives. In the process, he recorded a dozen interviews, scanned 90 pictures and transferred 120 master tapes. Afro-Beat Airways showcases an amazing diversity of local rhythms spiced with Afro-American funk, soul and jazz. Samy Ben Redjeb, in his own words: "While some light has been cast on the Ghanaian music scene of the 1970s, Togolese music is relatively obscure and badly documented. However, we are working on this! In fact, we've already made a start, with our previous Analog Africa compilation African Scream Contest which showcased 3 Togolese artists. Afro-Beat Airways presents two more -- Orchestre Abass and Cos-Ber-Zam. While the first band developed into one of the country's best, to such an extent that none other than Fela Kuti once offered them a contract to play at his Afro-Spot night club (which later became The Shrine), the second artist was a one-hit wonder. "Né Noya" was a monster hit in Togo, but it is to-date the only release by this obscure artist. The reason why I decided to include these Togolese tracks on this compilation is that they were all recorded in Ghana and thus they worked well in the mix." These tracks have been hiding for 30 years, and, as you will hear, these are modern African sounds created to stand the test of time. Afro-Beat Airways is like a time capsule, and promises to take you on a fascinating musical journey through West Africa's vintage Afro sounds.

TCHAIKOVSKY & OTHERS Russian Visionaries: From Glinka To The Firebird 2CD
You can't step into a concert hall without something from Russia being programmed. Yet in 1850, Russia barely had one major composer and handful of pianists, but within sixty years, their music scene dominated the world's concert halls. Who and how did this happen? Arbiter probes the problematic Russian psyche, starting with the writer Andrei Bely's agonizing over whether they are Europeans or from somewhere else, concluding they are Mongols at heart. The attractive music from Germany and France led Tchaikovsky to model himself after Mozart and rely on his colorful talents in melody, sound, and rhythm with the idea of showing that a Russian like him could take on any Westerner. Unlike his quest for approval, there arose a group of composers who studied and discussed folklore, fairy tales, myths, Central Asian traditions, and did all they could to shun the West. Known as the Mighty Five, they gave birth to Stravinsky, Scriabin, the path of representing their Old Believers, Mongol warlords, sects that practiced castration, and a movement in art and literature resulting in symbolism and seeking to transform all of humanity through occult and spiritual phenomena. Arbiter bring to light the image-conscious Igor Stravinsky gripped in an ecstasy as he conducts the work of his mentor Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov comes to life, bringing him back to his own twenty-third year when he was still Rimsky's pupil and how his unexpected death cast him adrift and led to masterpieces shortly thereafter. Arbiter's latest expedition follows pioneers who sought to either imitate Western music or excavate native Pagan, mythic, and Central Asian sources. Performances by Konstantin Igumnov reveal a musician who straddled Tchaikovsky's westbound forays with the visionary mysticism of his peer Scriabin. When the American composer arrived with his radical dissonant music, the Moscow musical agencies prohibited his performances and led to Igumnov defying the regime by arranging private hearings that created a furor for Cowell's new music, as Russia was becoming culturally isolated under Stalin. Performances include lost recordings by Erica Morini, Georg Szell, Alfred Hoehn, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Issay Dobrowen, Albert Coates, Michael Zadora, Konstantin Igumnov, Alexander Kamensky, Oskar Fried, Igor Stravinsky, Vassily Sapellnikoff, and Vladimir Sofronitsky. Features compositions by Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Prokofiev, Glinka-Balakirev, Musorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, Chopin, and Scriabin. Arbiter's sound restorations bring light and depth to recordings discovered within the last few years and made in the 1920s.

QUAESCHNING & SCHNAUSS Synthwaves LP
LP version. Synthwaves pays homage to the masters of the past, yet it feels fresh and enchanting. Crisp, interlocking patterns are modulated and mutated with mathematical precision into eight pieces of pristine, post-kosmische sounds to float away to. During two intense weeks in Berlin, Thorsten Quaeschning and Ulrich Schnauss locked themselves in a studio full of vintage synthesizers, analog sequencers, and drum machines, and the result is a gorgeous set of purely electronic music. As with the finest Tangerine Dream soundtracks, it's the kind of music that paints vivid pictures on the canvas of the listeners mind: synth plucks hang in the air like glaring neon in metropolitan dusk and zero-gravity pads hover like ghostly morning mist traveling over empty coastlines. Poly-rhythmic patterns are allowed to build -- slowly but steadily -- bar after bar, until synth-Satori is reached.

PERFORMING FERRET BAND Performing Ferret Band LP
Alehop! and Beat Generation present a reissue of Performing Ferret Band's self-titled album, originally released in 1981. Hailing from Maidstone (Kent), Performing Ferret Band got together in 1978 and with their amateur take on music, they wrote a small but great chapter of the emergence born out of punk, when the proliferation of small labels and self-releases invaded the record shops and created a scene which developed one of the golden and most creative periods of music, despite the participants' technical limitations. Later based in Manchester and inspired by comedians such as Monty Python and musicians like Captain Beefheart, The Velvet Underground, or The Fall, the Ferrets developed a personal style very close to Television Personalities, Swell Maps, or The Desperate Bicycles, all bands of questionable virtuosity. That didn't stop the Ferrets from releasing two cassettes, a 7", and an LP during their short life until 1982. Their only LP, originally released in 1981 on the band's own Pig Production label as a 300-copies pressing, is reissued here in a limited edition. It's a compendium of absurdity, genius, humor, and that naive spirit which makes humanity more believable. Includes an insert with the band's story, photos, and memorabilia; Edition of 500.

CAMILLE Ilo Veyou 2LP+CD
Double LP version. Includes CD. Camille's fourth studio album Ilo Veyou, originally released in 2011. Includes "Allez Allez Allez", "L'étourderie", and "Tout Dit"."Recorded in a string of unusual locations including three church chapels and Noirlac Abbey, a 12th century Cistercian building located deep in the heart of the central French countryside, Gallic pop maverick Camille's fourth album, Ilo Veyou, reflects the low-key surroundings of its inception with a sound which playfully toys with the notions of silence and space. Indeed, it's possible to hear a pin drop on the majority of its 15 tracks, particularly on the Björk-esque, a cappella closer 'Tout Dit,' which sometimes bravely waits five seconds in-between each of Camille's whispered words; the highly atmospheric, Middle Eastern-tinged 'Le Berger,' which sees her adopt a Bollywood-style vocal alongside a simple oud arrangement, and the bilingual, hushed melodies of 'Pleasure,' which are accompanied solely by some echo-laden, muted percussion. While this sparse approach could have turned into a gimmick in lesser hands, Camille's flair for invention ensures the album never turns into a one-trick pony." --Jon O'Brien, AllMusic

FADER First Light CD
First Light is the debut album from Fader -- a new band formed by Neil Arthur (Blancmange, Near Future) and Benge, whose work includes his own solo albums, co-productions with Gazelle Twin, and his work with Wrangler and John Foxx And The Maths. The music was recorded and mixed at Benge's MemeTune Studios while Arthur worked on lyrics and vocals in his home studio. The album is full of powerful electronic pop songs -- up-tempo, dark, with flickers of beauty in the sounds and rhythms. Opening with the psychedelic strangeness of "3D Carpets", the album launches with a salvo of exhilarating electronic rock/pop songs including "Check The Power" -- an OCD meltdown with fierce electro surges -- and "I Prefer Solitude", with its brilliantly insistent chorus. From that point, the record buries deeper into melancholy nostalgia; internalized, dead-of-night fears; stream-of-conscious visions of city life and evocative descriptions of lost and lonely figures who find themselves out of time and out of place. The slower tracks such as "Laundrette", "Trip To The Coast", and "Liverpool Brick" are full of longing, with Arthur writing some of the finest lyrics of his career. "Laundrette" is a particularly British spin on the solitary mood of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. The title track is a flow of scrambled epiphanies and mixed-up thoughts while "Way Out" pitches a detached vocal and sense of distance with waves of aggressive, noisily anthemic synths, but then builds through a beautiful keyboard line that makes misery sound oddly inspiring. "Guilt, Doubt And Fear" is a mangled pop song, the catchy hooks snared into a red-eyed, insomniac's voice -- croaky but rich; half-spoken, a damaged croon. By comparison, "Winter Garden" is almost elegant in its minimalist approach, while "Wonderland" is a human drone on the landscape.

VA Bingo! French Punk Exploitation 1978-1981 CD
The real, great rock'n'roll swindle? You'd better search Belgium, and more specifically somewhere near Lou Deprijck and Yvan Lacomblez, two born-and-bred "Brusselians". If their names don't ring a bell at first glance, you've most likely already wiggled to their interplanetary hit "Ça Plane Pour Moi": A moronic song by a crappy singer... The prank swept through the world and within a few months, no less than one million 45s were sold just in France. It spawned mass-produced cover versions, becoming a universal punk anthem. Of course, such a cash cow would arouse envy and create quite a few vocations among our fellow countrymen. The song's trademark derision was about to bridge the missing link between original punk -- too violent, too dirty -- and the general public eager to enjoy a little Saturday-night pogo. Humor became the magic bullet to conquer a frightened audience. The formula had already proved successful. Remember the arrival of rock'n'roll in France (1957) through Boris Vian, Henri Salvador, and Michel Legrand. Their famous, jokey "Rock and Roll-Mops" already laid the foundations for the same equation: joke + rock'n'roll + derision = success. The big labels tried to produce punk bands in France -- Polydor signed the Stinky Toys and the Guilty Razors -- but only to result in huge commercial failures. But in the face of Mr. Bertrand's huge success, those big labels thought they understood how it worked. Music publishers and majors all wanted a punk hit. A&R executives brought all of their seasoned producers, composers, and lyricists into the stampede: eccentric arrangements, daft and stereotyped lyrics -- one-upmanship was the rule. An unprecedented bunch of punk-novelty records followed. Even André Verchuren had his own unbridled accordion cover version of "Ça Plane Pour Moi". Sure, most of these punk hoaxes are real lousy, real shitty but one must admit that some numbers stand out of the crowd. While they didn't reach the success of "Ça Plane Pour Moi", some, here and there, were really inspired and even more creative than the songs they hijacked and mimicked. Features: Piero, Soda Fraise, Stéfan, Geiger, Too Much, Gérard Bôle Du Chaumont, Sublime Deluxe, Bulldozer, Les Marylènes, Gisor, Anatole Frantz, Fatsy Wataire, and Plastichke. CD version comes with a 24-page booklet.

DER PLAN Unkapitulierbar CD
Moritz R®, Kurt Dahlke aka Pyrolator, and Frank Fenstermacher have met in the studio after 25 years and recorded a new album. One can claim that Der Plan was one of the most powerful German bands during the time of musical departure at the beginning of the 1980s. Der Plan was always more than a band: a kind of three-headed Renaissance man, for whom visual art was just as important as music. The Ata Tak label, founded by the three members, was one of the first continental European indie labels and released albums by DAF, Andreas Dorau, Holger Hiller, and Element Of Crime. Reichelt designed covers for Depeche Mode and decisively initiated the tiki/lounge revival at the beginning of the 1990s. Fenstermacher played on the legendary Monarchie Und Alltag by Fehlfarben (1980) and released a number of solo albums. Kurt Dahlke has remained active as a producer and programmer, most recently for Edgar Froese. Der Plan was not merely a cerebral band concept, but they were pop in the best sense: playful, fearless, and curious, they always wanted to "work with the current state of technology and express ourselves," says Dahlke. And if the current state of technology wasn't sufficient, they simply plugged in the soldering iron. The Geri Reig principle, conceived by Der Plan (BB 104CD/LP), was an invented term that anticipated the idea of the "Geniale Dillettanten". The title of the album translates to "Uncapitulable!" and signalizes both continuity and unbrokenness. That's hardly a given when three musicians have gone their own separate ways for a quarter of a century. As is often the case, an external occasion provided the spark for the idea of a comeback: as the birthday band at Andreas Dorau's 50th. So the band collected sketches, fragments, and ideas that had accumulated over the years and produced Unkapitulierbar in three weeks at Pyrolator's Ata Tak Studio Berlin. "This time the music was created on the basis of ideas and lyrics. Earlier, we often played improvised sessions and later added lyrics to it. One could say that in the meantime we have become something like songwriters," explains Reichelt. And "Der Plan 2017 is no longer so angular and swings better." But the music still sounds psychedelic: mild and sunny, as in "Es Heisst Die Sonne", "Come Fly With Me", or "Was Kostet Der Austritt", or dark and eerie on "Ich Kann Die Stille Hören" and "Gesicht Ohne Buch". There is a kind of electronic shanty -- "Wie Der Wind Weht" -- and a pop song with "Lass Die Katze Stehn". On "Man Leidet Herrlich" -- and not for the first time -- reggae and dub references are apparent. Unkapitulierbar is a melodic, electronic, brightly colored kaleidoscope of an album.

VA Cocoon Compilation Q 6LP BOX+CD
Six LP box set. Includes CD. Cocoon Recordings presents Q, the new edition of one of the longest running techno compilation series worldwide. With a broad bandwidth ranging from "futuristic-deconstructive" compositions such as "Da Dang" by Alex & Digby and "Fragile" by Carlos Nilmmns and featuring Genoveva, the many contributions to Q fancy almost anachronistic acid and trance influences. The vocal parts and the arrangement of "All I Can (About You)" by Baba Stiltz appear like electronic singer songwriting, slightly similar to Pepe Bradock productions and their Dada aesthetic. In contrast to this, "Anno Domini" by Kamran Sadeghi follows the sound approach of early Maurizio/Basic Channel records and reminds the listener that modern techno does not always have to be impulsive and kicking. Harmonies and melodies of all kinds, and the almost dreamy and playful sound arrangements are something like the common element on Q. For example, "Ode To Be" by Sebastian Mullaert works like a decent sunriser that marks the end of a long night. Harald Björk takes it a few steps further in the harmony corner. His song "Spring" is on the edge to an ambient/chill-out song and unfolds a great hypnotic effect. "Tom's Heimweh" by Acid Pauli and the demanding "Sequence In D" by Fort Romeau follow into a similar direction, however both pieces are built on slightly more solid beats despite their melodic basic mood. Metallically cool, but equally sexy and bass-heavy at the same time, US legend John Tejada's "Blitzar" throws crazy designed sounds at the listener. "Pulse Train" by Söllscher & Siech, on the other hand, follows a more traditional techno approach with a strong beat and bass foundation and cool, building acid lines. The "vapor-spacey" string sounds, reminiscent of Detroit techno, complete the tracks. Johannes Volk's "Luminance" is a bit more consistent in an almost old-school acid manner and appears to be something like the most clubby track of the album. "If I'd Care More" by Rico Puestel is something like the "all-embracing track" on Q; Puestel unites in his contribution the different approaches and lines of the other pieces and delivers the secret title track of the compilation. Dry and kicking beats, dreamy melody parts, but also hypnotic basslines and lots of crazy sounds in the arrangement. Exactly like the overall vibe of Q this one is not "futuristic" or "old school", it is simply timeless.

DITMAS, BRUCE Visioni Sconvolgenti 10"
With roots in the early developments of modular synthesis and free jazz and revered amongst the most discerning collectors of international jazz, electronic music, and American avant-garde, the experimental drummer known as Bruce Ditmas occupies a firm branch on contemporary experimental music's family tree. As the one time romantic partner (and artistic collaborator) of sound poet Joan La Barbara (later to be Miss Morton Subotnik) and the stand-out session drummer for both Robert Mason's mutant synth Stardrive project and Gil Evan's legendary Jimi Hendrix tribute band, Ditmas is best savored as the first recorded solo artist to utilize Robert Moog's lesser-known Moog Drum controller -- an instrument which over the course of two 1977 independent LPs (Aeray Dust and Yellow) would become synonymous with his blooming reputation. Raised in Miami, nurtured in New York City, and willingly exploited internationally, Bruce's public life as a child prodigy-cum-world jazz crusader (drawing similarities with the likes of France's Jacques Thollot) has seen him spread his select discography over many imprints, including Joan La Barbara's own Wizard Label, Enja, and ECM -- socializing with sound designers like Suzanne Ciani and collaborating on projects penned by Annette Peacock, Paul Bley, and his long running collaborator Enrico Rava. Spending the last thirty years travelling between America and Italy as a full-time jazz musician whilst working with inter-communal music initiatives, film directors, and theater groups, Bruce has retained the same maverick passion and macabre creative influences channeling brutalism, futurism, science fiction, and psychological horror through his percussive mantra and avant-garde approach to instrument manipulation and recontextualization. The selected titles on Visioni Sconvolgenti are extracted from various recordings made over the last three decades, comprising field recording techniques and percussive manipulation resulting in gritty tonal soundscapes and angular sonic sculptures, while drawing theoretical comparisons with European proto-industrial units like Germany's Faust, Swiss electronic jazz pioneer Bruno Spoerri, Czech sonic illustrator Milan Grygar, and sprawling generation of Parisian musique concrète informed anti-melodic luminaries. Reflecting a lifelong career in active melodic drum exploration and vivid existential sound design, Visioni Sconvolgenti provides an alternative, darker, meditative, glimpse into the work of a proactive composer at his non-conformist best in the uninhibited confides of his own home analog studio. Artwork by Andy Votel. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering; Edition of 500.

UP-TIGHT Up-Tight LP
2017 repress. Up-Tight are a three-piece psych group based in Hamamatsu, Japan with a history dating back to 1992 has released around 10 records. Up-Tight's current line-up (2016) is original members T. Aoki (vocal & guitar) T. Ogata (bass) and T. Shirahata (drums). The ghosts of The Velvet Underground, Les Rallizes Dénudés and Amon Düül loom large over their personal feedback song-destruction universe. This LP is the first re-issue of their original CD-R-only release in Japan in 1999 in a very limited edition of 100 copies. It has been remastered in Berlin from original recordings and presented here in an edition of 300. Here is what David Keenan (Wire magazine) thought about this first CD-R released in 1999 : "Up-Tight are a noxious young trio from south Tokyo, all acolytes of the legendary Japanese psych group Les Rallizes Dénudés, who augment their sound with crushing, Sabbath-styled dynamics, earsplitting acid leads and beautiful Velvets-inspired ballads... Song structures are mostly kept loose, allowing for lots of noisy improvisation. Generally the album is anchored by heavy riffs. Just when you thought you'd got to grips with Tokyo's paradigm destroying psych scene, this one hits like a sucker punch." All songs are five to ten minutes long, varying from very melodic ballads to psychedelic journeys. The album ends with an epic track, "??", which is an 18 minutes tour-de-force, that takes you to another dimension as if the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" would have a child with Acid Mothers Temple, while listening to Amon Düül under codeine. Up-Tight are from the generation that emerged with the madness of the Tokyo '90s and the P.S.F Records scene. Close to Acid Mothers Temple (the two bands recorded an album together), Up-Tight has a unique sound and is one of the most important underground reference in the Japan psychedelic scene.

PRAED Fabrication Of Silver Dreams LP
Founded by Lebanese visual artist and musician Raed Yassin and Swiss musician Paed Conca in 2006, Praed is a band whose music can be described as a mixture of Arabic popular music, free jazz, and electronics. Over the years, the duo has collaborated with renowned musicians from across the globe. Praed explore the terrain of shaabi (Arabic popular music) and its interconnectedness with other hypnotic music genres. Through their research and thanks to numerous concerts in various Egyptian cities, Conca and Yassin discovered a strong cultural connection between shaabi sounds and the mouled music played in religious trance ceremonies. The hypnotizing psychedelic effect embedded in this genre incited Praed to explore other popular music from around the world that also employs forms of sonic delirium -- free jazz, space jazz, and psychedelic rock, among others -- and incorporate these in their own musical concoctions. This is the duo's fourth album. File under: dabke, shaabi, Arabic, free jazz. RIYL: Rizan Said, Omar Souleyman.

FOX, TERRY 552 Steps Through 11 Pairs Of Strings 2LP
When Terry Fox went from San Francisco to Europe in 1972, he discovered the great pavement labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral. It consists of 11 concentric rings with 552 steps and 34 turns leading to the center. The discovery of the labyrinth became a revelation to him: He saw it as a metaphor for his own life, the numbers of rings and turns corresponding to cycles of health and sickness he had undergone. Thus, he decided to base all of his works until 1978 on the labyrinth. These include two major sound works, one of which -- The Labyrinth Scored For The Purrs Of 11 Cats -- was later released on cassette (1989) and LP (2009), while the other has remained unreleased so far. 552 Steps Through 11 Pairs Of Strings was a performance made in Fox's loft in San Francisco on August 14, 1976, starting at 10pm and lasting four-and-a-half hours. He stretched 11 pairs of piano wires of 11 different thicknesses across the floor and attached them to turnbuckles at each end, which he then hooked to eye-screws in the wooden floor. Each of the piano wire pairs were passed over a wooden bridge at both ends. over a wooden bridge at both ends. He played this instrument with a soft mallet in one hand and a score in the other. The score was a 34-foot string tied with 552 knots. Each knot represented a step in the labyrinth with the 34 turns indicated by either a piece of wire in a knot (a move to the next longer pair of wires) or a rubber band around a knot (a move to the next shorter pair). The audience was in the dark loft of the floor below. Alan Scarritt describes the performance in the liner notes: "We were all mesmerized by the beauty of the piece and lost in its grace. Around midnight a light rain began to fall outside the windows completing the piece's perfection. He played for another two hours or so. It also happened to be my birthday. It was the best birthday I ever had." This double LP includes four selections from the performance. Comes in a gatefold sleeve with a reproduction of the score, a photograph and a drawing of the instrument, and the invitation card to the performance; Texts by Terry Fox and Alan Scarritt; Edition of 300.

PANHUYSEN, PAUL Twenty-Three Carillon Sudokus (Number Made Visible - Number Made Audible) LP
Carillon Sudokus is the sonic counterpart to Oog & Oor (Eye & Ear), the last work that Dutch sound and visual artist Paul Panhuysen (1934-2015) realized. Oog & Oor was a design made with his daughter Sappho Panhuysen for a temporary installation in the lighted column of the Rietveld bus shelter next to the town hall of Eindhoven. It is a further development from Eight Double Sudokus, a series of large-scale prints exhibited at Museum De Pont in Tilburg in 2012. Both designs were created using sudoku puzzles and comprise various shapes of different colors whose structure was derived from the number sequences present in individual sudokus. Panhuysen used number systems such as magic squares, the Fibonacci series and the golden ratio in much of his art because he felt that instead of limiting his artistic freedom, such systems allowed him to make new discoveries and realize works that transcended his own imagination. René van Peer describes the composition in the liner notes: "A system is evidently at work behind the order of colours and shapes in these prints. On the other hand it is far from obvious what the underlying order actually is. Coloured bands and arcs converge in a rhythmic play of lines. Some originate from the same point, joining to form a right angle or part of a circle. Others touch only at the point or remain loose ends in a wave of motion. The orderliness of the structure and the erratic behaviour of the straight and curved lines strive for predominance in the series." These principles can also be applied to pitch and musical phrases. For Eight Double Sudokus, Panhuysen composed eight pieces for piano that were heard during the exhibition. For Oog & Oor, he envisioned music for the carillon, a bell tower on the roof of the Eindhoven town hall. The original idea was to generate 365 sudoku-based pieces, one for each day of the year that the installation was to be shown. In the end, around 50 pieces were realized in collaboration with town carillonneur Rosemarie Seuntiëns. Side A of this LP contains 11 pieces played live by Seuntiëns on the ceremonial ending of Oog & Oor on August 28, 2015. Side B features 12 pieces played mechanically by the carillon. Comes in full-color gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeve; Liner notes by René van Peer; Edition of 300.

XORDOX Neospection LP
LP version. Editions Mego present the first release of a brand new project from JG Thirlwell. Recorded at Self Immolation studios in Brooklyn. This is Xordox. Xordox orbits a universe inhabited by darkness, wit, mystery adventure, and experimentation. The cinematic quality that exudes from Thirlwell's bent being presents itself in Neospection; Unlike Thirlwell's other works, this is predominantly a synthesizer record, including recording sessions from his residency at the legendary EMS studios in Stockholm, employing Buchla and Serge synthesizers. Sarah Lipstate (aka Noveller) plays her super-processed soundscape guitar on three of the tracks on the album, and additional mixing took place at Lazer Sound studios with Al Carlson (who works extensively with Oneohtrix Point Never). Xordox. Diamond circulating swells; Sequenced stealth sci-fi; Malleable membrane matters; Wild fabric electronic; Heart eaten beat; Fruits of fear and exhilaration. Neospection is neon noir. Neospection is ere 4 yor. Xordox arrives as unexpected and remote as any alien encounter but security lies in the cosmic drama and dark shadows that seep throughout Thirlwell's soul. In this, 2017 the listener once again enters the mind and world of one man who refuses to play along with anyone's game but the idiosyncratic one of his own devising. BARAKA & THE RED MICROPHONE, AMINA Amina Baraka & The Red Microphone CD
Amina Baraka speaks truth and spits fire when she reads her poetry. She is a warm and friendly person, but keeps a metal shovel by her front door in case of trespassers. She is a devoted Communist. She is vast, she contains multitudes. After decades in the shadow of her late husband, poet and playwright Amiri Baraka, Amina is about to raise her profile in the company of The Red Microphone, four musicians who are fellow fighters in the struggle for equality for all. Not that she hasn't been getting her poetry published all those years, but, generally, poets who add music to the mix can transcend category boundaries and reach more listeners. And this is some powerful music, inside/outside jazz, created in the moment, but occasionally building on a composition by group member Rocco John Iacovone, the cadences of Baraka's words intertwining with the rhythms of the music to become more than the sum of its parts. All words by Amina Baraka. All music collectively improvised by The Red Microphone except: the music of "Timestep", written as "Travelin' Thru" by Rocco John Iacovone, with quote of "L'Internationale" by Pierre Degeyter; the music of "The Spirit of Billy Bang", written by Laurie Towers; the music of "The Things I Love", written as "Blue Nights" by Rocco John Iacovone; the music of "Talking Drum", written by John Pietaro.Personnel: Amina Baraka - words, lead vocals; The Red Microphone is: Ras Moshe Burnett - tenor saxophone, flute, percussion; Rocco John Iacovone - curved soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, piano; John Pietaro - musical direction, drums, percussion; Laurie Towers - bass guitar.

NOMADE ORQUESTRA Entremundos CD
Nomade Orquestra return from the stratosphere via Brazil with their second offering: Entremundos ("Between Worlds"). Gazing outward through a kaleidoscope from the heart of Sao Paulo's jazz scene, the collective consciousness of the ten-man orquestra has dreamt up an adventurous amalgam of earth's most far reaching musical cultures. Recorded at Red Bull Studios, Sao Paulo, Entremundos is like a cosmic musical playground where Ethio-jazz, Indian classical, and Oriental sounds dance around Afro-Brazilian roots rhythms and Northern hemisphere jazz, funk, soul, library music, and hip-hop influences. The sheer vastness of the album is astounding, Nomade Orquestra have quite literally conquered the world in sound. Nomade Orquestra are some of the most accomplished musicians in their city. They're also avid record collectors, citing the coming-together of their expansive musical knowledges as key to their unique sound. Album opener "Jardim De Zaira" -- a tribute to the neighborhood on the outskirts of the famous ABC region, where the band meet and rehearse -- hosts a playful unison of vibraphone, guitar, horns, and keyboards reminiscent of Stereolab's funkiest late '90s output. "Felag Mengu" lies somewhere between the groovy, brooding Ethio-jazz of Mulatu Astatke and Tinariwen's hazy desert rock, and "Olho Do Tempo" is another enchanting incarnation of the band's impossible to define brand of global roots music. The album's wildest moment comes from the roaring off-road, big-band joy-ride "Rinoceronte Blues" with hillbilly harmonica, soulful organ stabs, and soaring horn arrangements, further highlighting the depths of Nomade Orquestra's endless span of influences. With Gilles Peterson singing their praise and rave reviews from the likes of Wax Poetics, Record Collector, and Songlines, Nomade Orquestra's self-titled debut album (FARO 189CD/LP, 2015) launched them from their humble beginnings to international recognition. They also embarked on their first tour outside of Brazil. CD version comes in a jewel case.

ARIAN Arian 2LP
Favorite Recordings present an official reissue of Arian, a rare and underrated disco album originally released in 1981 by PGP RTB. Arian Kerliu was born in the small town of Debar, Macedonia. Arian's first recordings for a local radio stations were at the age of 14, appearing in almost every music festival in Ex-Yugoslavia. When he was 19, Arian came to New York City, working different jobs and studying music. His first music engagements were in various clubs throughout the city, playing guitar and singing. He then met with James Benjamin-Fish, well known bass-guitar player, with whom he formed the band Arian & Funky Family, mainly performing in the best clubs of NYC at that time. Together, they came to an idea to record an album of their own. After traveling throughout the US, they got to know each other very well, and had connected with some of the best musicians at that time. Sinclair Acey arranged three songs and Hubert Eaves wrote the song "Still Together", a beautiful ballad written in honor of his wife. By that time, Hubert had gained two Grammy awards for Stephanie Mills's albums. Kornelius Cambell also wrote and composed two songs of the album, which Sinclair Acey arranged. The album also contains a great cover of "Can't Say Goodbye" by Bobby Caldwell, a song that Arian and James had interpreted almost every night when touring. And all of this was completed with the background vocals of Tawatha Agee (Mtume), Shevill Alexander, and Sybil Thomas (Raw Silk). Arian & Funky Family band was then invited in Yugoslavia for a European tour, including James, Kornelius, and Stacey, but also others great musicians such as William "Spaceman" Patterson, Zane Mark, Steve Kroon, Trevor Gale, Alex Foster, or Reggie Marks, not forgetting Flame Braithwaite and Meli'sa Morgan on background vocals. Having the material of the four songs ready and finalized, the PGP RTB label from Belgrade offered to release them on an album, with the idea of also adapting the songs with lyrics from the famous Croatian musician and writer Mario Mihaljevic. Favorite brings this brilliant LP back to life. In order to ensure the best sound quality, the original track list has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all DJs and music collectors.

SUNNY, AL Time To Decide LP
Favorite Recordings present Time To Decide, the first album by Al Sunny. Al Sunny is a young composer emerging from the French soul music scene. Soon after learning the guitar, he started composing and became involved in numerous projects and collaborations. Al has been influenced by pop, rock, and electronic music, always with a foundation in the "Black" and "Soul" sound. During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. The will to establish himself on a solo project became stronger and stronger. He quickly discovered deep inside himself the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Through his guitar, he gives birth to the majority of his compositions and always seeks to bring the melody of his songs to the forefront. During his studies he met several musicians, including Florian Pellissier, then professor at the conservatory and a confirmed pianist who worked on various projects such as Guts, Anthony Joseph, Florian Pellissier Quintet, and Shola Adissa. Thanks to Florian, Al Sunny met Pascal Rioux, founder and A&R of Favorite Recordings. Immediately seduced and impressed by his talent and the various demos that he listened to, Pascal invited the young musician to collaborate and produce an album with Favorite Recordings. Together they agreed on a musical direction that looks towards the west coast movement of the '70s and '80s. This direction includes influences like Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, and Ned Doheny, of whom Al Sunny covers the classic "Get It Up For Love" on the album. With Time To Decide, Al Sunny shows the listener the premise of his music style, infused with blue-eyed-soul, pop, and folk. Written and composed by himself, it's in close collaboration with Florian Pellissier that his songs came to life. Under the guidance of Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings, the production of this album ensures a sound and a final result worthy of the best classics of the genre.

SOUL SUGAR Chase The Light LP
LP version. Hailing from the hills of Montmartre, Paris, the man behind Soul Sugar, Guillaume "Gee" Metenier, is regarded as one of Europe's most prolific keyboard players. His passion for the Hammond B3 has led him to study under the guidance of legendary jazz master Dr. Lonnie Smith. The heavily vintage sound is no coincidence, as other classic keyboards like the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, or Minimoog round out his studio arsenal. His influences include a vast heritage of soul and jazz greats such as Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Booker T, Art Neville, or reggae legends Jackie Mittoo and Augustus Pablo. "Gee" was an integral part of electronic outfit, Seven Dub, which gained certain notoriety in the emerging French scene in the late '90s, releasing a number of singles and albums as well as remixes for artists such as Femi Kuti, King Tubby vs. Horace Andy, and Sly & Robbie, to name a few. As a musician, Guillaume has collaborated with the likes of The Last Poets, Alain Bashung, Kid Loco, Grant Phabao, Gizelle Smith, The Mighty Mocambos, Blundetto, and many more. He also released a handful of notable singles as Soul Sugar, such as "Ritual", "East Of The River Nile", and "Why Can't We Live Together", and an album called Nothing But The Truth (2009). The latest outing from Soul Sugar, Chase The Light, is a fusion of roots reggae, psychedelic soul, and funk grooves, showcasing heavy instrumentals and powerful songs. Recorded in France and Kingston, Jamaica with Yvo Abadi on drums, drummer dubmaster Jahno, and guitarist extraordinaire Thomas Naim, with vocals by Courtney John, who's falsetto stylings and lyrical poetry features on two tracks (one including a special appearance by Dr. Lonnie Smith) and Leonardo Carmichael, over a heavy riddim revision of the classic "Why Can't We Live Together". The analog production delivers solidly, taking no prisoners and keeping the groove alive, the whole collection of tracks simply rocks... BARRABAS Wild Safari/Woman 12"
"When there's rhythm people will move, and moving people was the fate for these two songs from Spanish Supergroup Barrabas. Originally released in 1972 on RCA Spain, 'Wild Safari' and 'Woman' would become underground hits among New York City disc jockeys at time when Discotheques preceded disco music. Over the years It has been well documented that the music from the Iberian Rockers and in particular their song 'Woman' found a home in both Nicky Siano's Gallery and in David Mancuso's Legendary Loft around 1973. Curiously but perhaps not surprising, a few years later 'Woman' would also become a breaker's anthem in a nascent hip-hop scene, where having obscure or 'ultimate' breaks would separate a Grandmaster from the rest of the flock. The story behind Barrabas is quite peculiar as well. With members from various Latin countries (Cuba, Philipines, Portugal and Spain), the band led by Fernando Arbex were accidental pioneers in a sense, blending Latin, African, and American influences into a package destined to move people across the globe. With a successful debut album, Barrabas was one of the first international groups to leave its mark on the disco circuit with these two hit singles. 'Woman' and 'Wild Safari' charted well in various countries across Europe and the Americas, including the USA and Canada. Although the group never followed up the success of their first LP, the legacy of tracks like 'Woman' and 'Wild Safari' is treasured by the DJs who have studied the histories of clubs like the Paradise Garage and The Loft. It's really not surprising to find a decade later in the 80s, 'High Energy' and 'Freestyle' covers of 'Woman' or the groove sampled into a House Music beat even to this day. There was indeed something about that Woman. Recently, HBO's show Vinyl paid homage to 'Wild Safari' in a scene that more than symbolically depicted the birth of the disco era as we would come to know it."

GENIUS/GZA Liquid Swords 2LP
2017 black vinyl repress. "According to legend, when the Wu-Tang Clan formed like Voltron on their debut album in 1993, GZA happened to be the head--an appropriate place for a man also called 'The Genius.' Yet at the time few could have predicted that his 1995 masterpiece Liquid Swords would be considered 'one of the most substantial lyrical journeys in hip-hop history' (Chicago Tribune). At the peak of his powers as a producer, Wu-Tang mastermind RZA crafted the album's distinctive soundtrack at his basement studio in Staten Island; a haunting landscape of dusty samples, sharp snares and menacing urban gloom, with frequent interludes of dialogue from the classic Samurai flick Shogun Assassin. Cerebral, strategic and precise with his words, GZA crystallizes a range of influences--from chess to kung-fu films to mob flicks and Eastern philosophy--into sharply delivered rhymes. The album features appearances by the entire Wu-Tang Clan, and includes the auspicious debut of Killah Priest on 'B.I.B.L.E.' Acknowledged as one of the '100 Best Rap Albums' (The Source) and 'Top 100 Records of the 1990s' (Pitchfork.com), Get On Down is proud to present Liquid Swords as it was intended to be experienced, on double vinyl with audio remastered from the original source tapes and the original iconic cover artwork from DC Comics artist Denys Cowan." Think musicians of the stature of Eddie Palmieri, Mongo Santamaría, Noro Morales, Francisco Aguabella, Cal Tjader, or Machito. "Mamey Colorao", a well-known composition by Peruchin Justíz, is the album title of third volume from the Afro-Cuban Roots Of Boogaloo compilation series by Grosso! Recordings, performed by Tito Puente and later covered on a more electric version by Ocho. Side A opens out a variety of more traditional Cuban numbers such as "No Tiene Telaraña" by José Curbelo's Orquesta, "El Baile Suavito", a heavy duty tune performed by Orquesta Aragón, and a very well-known cha-cha-chá "Rico Vacilón" written by Rosendo Ruíz Quevedo on the inimitable voice of Machito & his Afrocubans. "Garbage Man's Chachachá (La Basura)" by La Playa Sextet highlights an electric guitar sound that anticipates the fusion of the traditional and the new sounds that would lead into the 'Boogaloo' and 'Salsa'. A couple of montunos round off the A side, "Quimbombó" from Félix Chappotín Orchestra with the legendary Miguelito Cuní and "Bolita" with a double entendre of Bimbi and his Trío Oriental. Noro Morales opens the B side with "Vitamina", a traditional mambo followed by "Palo Mayombe", a pachanga rhythm with the distinctive Afro-sound of Mongo Santamaria. An exquisite version of "El Gavilán" is performed by Eddie Palmieri on piano with an outstanding brass section that would years later identify the Fania All Stars' sound. The last three tracks bring about a turning point on the concept of the album: "Wachi Wara" by Dizzy Gillespie in a Latin jazz vein performed by the always modern and elegant Cal Tjader, a version of "Titoro", by Tito Puente, with a Brazilian vibe at times interpreted by vibraphonist Bobby Montez and concluding, Francisco Aguabella with "Shirley's Guaguanco", a jazzy tune with a traditional guaguancó rhythm and sound on the congas and bongo with a final coro reminiscent of the very Cuban "rumba de solar".

AMINI, SIAVASH Tar CD
Continuing his experiments combining elements of drone and modern classical music, Tehran based composer Siavash Amini's fourth solo album Tar explores the fragile tensions between an individual and a collective subconscious. Making its starting point the expression of these feelings in dreams and nightmares of each individual, Tar translates the images, feelings, and textures into sound. After a series of noisier and less melodic albums, Tar catches the active listener with a subtle tension created by oscillating sounds somewhere between discomfort and transcendence. Even if some parts of Tar are quite disturbing, the record never becomes simply dark. "Amini provides a satisfying mix of modern classical composition, ambient noise, granular synthesis and musique concrète with a hint of muscularity below its serene surface." --The Guardian

FOUK With Lasers EP 12"
Fouk are back on Heist Recordings with their With Lasers EP. Their new taste for grit and the heavier side of funk is most evident on the opener "F3000", where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush synth stabs. "With Lasers" is a classic Fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with, well, lasers. "See You On The Other Side" carefully blends guitar licks, Rhodes-y chords, and vocal chops into a lovely groove. Swedish synth nerds Mount Liberation Unlimited ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy Pepe Bradock-goes-Balearic track.

JOY ORBISON Off Seaso/Fuerza 12"
" 'Off Season' is the more immediate weapon. At first brush it's a fairly straight, breaks-infused drum track, although a few small but crucial details set it apart. At one point the track's rhythm is suddenly scrambled, knocking dancers off their balance, while an ominous synth lines ghosts in for the track's main break, which brings things to near-silence before returning with the intensity of the best hardcore records. 'Fuerza' is subtler and made me think of Olof Dreijer's work as Oni Ayhun. That's mainly because of the track's distinctive lead synth, which, with its phased stomp, also brings to mind Levon Vincent" --Resident Advisor.

REBOLLEDO Mondo Re-Alterado 2CD
Following 2016's much-acclaimed solo album Mondo Alterado (HIPPIE 008CD/LP), original Pachanga Boy and Hippie Dance mentor Rebolledo returns to the limelight with the jam-packed Mondo Re-Alterado, tapping into his vast and varied network of friends and fellow soundsmiths. Artists such as Superpitcher, DJ Tennis, Maceo Plex, Red Axes, Fango, or Fantastic Twins deliver stunning takes on Rebolledo's unique signature sound, creating a full suite of exclusive remixes, cover versions, and reinterpretations. From the super-energetic club rumblings of Maceo Plex's "Discótico Pléxico" to DJ Tennis's dreamy "Pimiento Drive Version" of "A Numb Gas To The Future" or Fantastic Twins' party bomb "Fantastic Pow Pow", the journey through Mondo Re-Alterado is full of twists and turns -- a world where an epic, cinematic soundscape such as Superpicher's "Rainboy Super Space" sits comfortably alongside the claustrophobic, punishing banger that Fango sculpted from stand-out cut "Pow Pow". Meanwhile, Red Axes turn the casual narrative of "Life Is Strange, Life Is Hard, Life Is Great" into a bouncing workout -- a great companion piece to "WANT", Danny Daze and Shokh's propulsive, jagged dub version of "Fears Come True". Other highlights include Jörg Burger aka The Black Frame with the lush "Black Rainbow Woman", Paulor's country rock extravaganza "Discótico Desértico" and not one, but two excellent contributions from former Italians Do It Better honcho Mike Simonetti. It's a magical, surprising ride that finds beauty in contrasts -- while staying tuned to Rebolledo's spirit of adventure and powerful sense of style.

KIRBY, LEYLAND Memories Live Longer Than Dreams 2LP
2017 repress; Originally released in 2009. The third of the three 2LP editions in James Leyland Kirby's When We Parted My Heart Wanted To Die series. The synthetic luster of Memories Live Longer Than Dreams already appeared cracked and damaged the first time around, and in 2017 its phosphorescent glow remains a beacon of shelter for contemplation and secluded mind-drift, offering a surreal, nostalgic night-light to the gloomy and confused world it diagnosed and predicted nearly ten years ago. Written during James Leyland Kirby's forlorn purgatorial years spent in Berlin during the period which shaped the modern world as we know it -- a time when global financial institutions collapsed, YouTube's all-encompassing archive was beginning to spill over, and Facebook and Twitter were starting to enmesh the entire planet -- this final instalment finds Kirby channeling osmotically absorbed visions of the future, as spelt out by Vangelis, Lynch and Badalamenti, Eno, and Kirby's own The Caretaker alter ego, into a waking dream sequence of quietly anguished sound poems for the contemporary echo chamber, relinquishing a traversal of the hive mind's private fears and shared nightmares rendered in ghostly scrolls of synth noise and sweepingly emotive cinematic gestures. It effectively diagnoses a sort of cultural malaise that was perhaps embryonic in 2009, as the golden age of dance/pop form and optimism which resulted in radical acts such as V/Vm and the Ccru was now left shimmering in the rearview, with the momentous energy of its accumulated, independent scenes being diffused into institutions or calcifying into hyper commercialism, leaving little or no room for ambiguity, irony or subversively socialist thought within its increasingly binary wake; a wake which has now bifurcated into extreme left and right-leaning politics with a gulf of misunderstanding in between. Keening and reeling away his own thoughts on the matter in that inter-zone of negative space, Kirby draws on ever tightening coils of cultural feedback loops and the infidelity of memory to parse, process, and secrete a slow, plasmic ooze of melancholic musical form that perhaps best represents the feelings of our age; of our shared future occluded by an inglorious or illusive past that promised much, yet never paid up.

FIELDHEAD We've All Been Swimming LP
Previous Fieldhead releases have seen Paul Elam take a detached view from the hillsides of West Yorkshire and Western Canada, but with We've All Been Swimming, the subject matter is closer and more immediate. Tensely wound synths lead throughout We've All Been Swimming, shifting from the breathless momentum of the opening track through to pulses reminiscent of Colin Stetson on "Ton". The unique violin playing of Elaine Reynolds glides sparingly across the record, tempering the constantly shifting arpeggios and accentuating the human elements within the record's machine-like core. The haze found on previous releases still hangs, but now it's the haze of a crowded street or the last train home. We've All Been Swimming is a concise and inspired attempt to reduce electronica down to the things that matter. Edition of 250.

VA La Torre Ibiza Volumen Dos CD
Hostal La Torre gives no credence to the celebrity culture that exists elsewhere in Ibiza. Once through its doors, the sun is the only star, as La Torre strives to protect the intimacy and magic that Ibiza was built upon. 2016 saw La Torre launch the first edition of their compilation (HLTR 001CD/LP), which went on to be named one of Resident Advisor's top five mixes of 2016. La Torre Ibiza Volumen Dos is compiled by Mark Barrott and Pete Gooding, both integral to La Torre's musical identity and the wider Balearic scene. Pete Gooding holds over three decades of experience as a DJ, including over twenty years sound tracking sunset at the notorious Cafe Mambo in Ibiza, while Mark Barrott has become the face of Balearic, featured in the Guardian, Pitchfork, NPR, and The Fader for his sublime productions and forward thinking International Feel label. The mix includes obscure and much coveted material from the likes of old veterans Vangelis and John Barry, through to a new generation of musical eccentrics such as Lord Of The Isles, Tornado Wallace, and La Torre's own Mark Barrott with an exclusive track. It skirts the outer peripheries of oddities to reimagine what is considered du jour, resulting in a charmed and esteemed choice of music that reflects the audience of La Torre -- a cosmopolitan, original, and radical set from all walks of life. Gooding and Barrott on the release: "Our hope is that even if you haven't yet visited us at La Torre, this collection of music will help you on this journey and if you have shared the majesty of the sunset with us, we hope it will transport you back to that glorious moment when the stillness and feeling of connectedness is so joyous it's almost overwhelming." Tucked away in a secluded spot on the west coast of the island, Hostel La Torre reinvents the Balearic spirit pioneered by Alfredo Fiorito at Amnesia and José Padilla at Café del Mar in the early '80s, carving the footprints of a new and inspiring avant-garde scene in Ibiza's next chapter. Also features: Dip In The Pool, Ishi Vu, Oumou Sangaré, Fuga Ronto, The Durutti Column, Marvin Franklin, True Underground Sound Of Rome, (Don't Ask), Pitto, Dario Domingues & Tupac Amaru, Blue Gas, and Eric Serra.

VA Too Slow to Disco 3 CD
How Do You Are? Recordings present Too Slow to Disco 3, another incredible collection of songs that gleam with the high definition gloss of big-studio, bigger-budget production. TSTD 3 is another excursion into those late 1970s west coast delusions of grandeur, but in the company of songs that are also brimming over with soul, wit, and passion. Killer tunes, penned and played by virtuosic instrumentalists, backroom gals and guys who were often also Grammy-winners in their own right. All the elements that have made Too Slow to Disco volumes one (HDYARE 001CD/LP, 2014) and two (HDYARE 002CD/LP, 2015), and The Ladies of edition (HDYARE 003CD/LP, 2016), so beloved are back for another round of near-danceable lushness. This smooth wave continues to ripple round today's music world too: Think of Thundercat's single with Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald (2017), or even The XX's sample of the Alessi Brothers' "Do You Feel It" (featured on TSTD 1) on "Say Something Loving" (2016). DJ Supermarkt has somehow prized open another box of obscure gems, selected and sequenced to bring out the mood of the era. Lyrically the focus remains on slightly difficult love affairs backed by grooves gentle enough to mix cocktails to. There's an accidental pop hit crossover from none-more-fusion jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour along with a dab of Christian funk from Archie Cavanaugh and his troupe. There's even a bizarrely funky and commercial sounding Grateful Dead laying down the chart-bothering beat of "Shakedown Street". Elsewhere Steely Dan's go-to sax man, Cornelius Bumpus makes an appearance with some angular funk (with his quartet), while Larry Carlton turns up the guitar-drenched white soul on "Where Did You Come From?". And the compilation goes beyond LA this time. The first non-English sung TSTD track comes in the shape of legendary Canadian songwriter Dwight Druick's slice of Montreal disco-funk. Then there's the groovesome Stars 'N' Bars from Sweden, and two acts from the UK, Vapour Trails and Billy Mernit. Also features: Bob Welch, Pratt & McClain, David Gates, Weldon Irvine, The Markley Band, Vapour Trails, The Fifth Avenue Band, Mark Capanni, Archie James Cavanaugh, Rob Mehl, and Jeremy Spencer Band. WESOLOWSKI, STEFAN Rite Of The End CD
A panoramic "wide screen" music which sounds like the missing link between the grandeur of Richard Wagner and the orchestral work of someone like Nick Cave. This is the ambition underlying Rite Of The End by the Polish composer Stefan Weso?owski, the second album to be released at Ici D'ailleurs following Kompleta in 2015 (MTS 004CD/LP). The album derives from an order from Stéphane Grégoire, boss of Ici D'ailleurs, who asked Weso?owski to write the music for a photo exhibition by Francis Meslet. The Rite Of The End by the composer's own admission ended up nothing like what had been initially ordered. Weso?owski shuffles the cards and mixes influences such as Prokofiev, Gregorian chants, Steve Reich or even Michael Mann. Rite Of The End is in fact actually quite close to Max Richter's classical surprises, a composer with whom Stefan Weso?owski shares a taste for elevation, and takes its religious source in Stefan Weso?owski's own childhood. He was born in 1985, in Poland, in the late Cold War era and is the son of a "spiritual and uncompromising" man who guided to the path of the beauty of the gesture. After having followed the same path as his two elder brothers and studied classical music, very early on he had a revelation thanks to a friend who was a Dominican monk. "We were teenagers," recounts Stefan, "and this friend asked me to write him liturgical songs. That's how it all started." As Weso?owski grew up, he lost his religious faith and transposed it into a growing belief, into what is called "beautiful music". A music which permits transcendence, contemplation, wonderment, because it is, in itself, the only means for man to extricate himself from his animal condition. Weso?owski also admits to a part of his musical education coming from the Beatles and the Stranglers, so it's understandable that the rituals here are those that push us every day to prostrate ourselves in front of two loud-speakers, regardless of the name of the gods. The six slow ceremonies of Rite Of The End are attractive through their praise of slowness and appreciation of the beautiful. This music is certainly classical in its foundations but is not when you listen to it. Americans would use the word unconventional. A term that fits Weso?owski perfectly, as he is punk to the very tip of his violin bow.

KIRK, RICHARD H. Dasein 2LP
Double LP version. Clear vinyl. Dasein is Richard H. Kirk's first solo album since 2011. Recorded, produced, and written by the founding member of Cabaret Voltaire himself, the album was constructed at Western Works, Sheffield, over a three-year period. Work began with recording on midi and analog synthesizers before guitar and vocals -- his first use of vocals in ten years -- were added. Kirk explains, "A lot of time was spent on post-production, editing and then living with the material and I think it benefited from stepping back and then revisiting after doing other things." Although it's not an overtly political album, it's hard not to hear a reaction to recent years' world events in the overwhelming urgency of "Nuclear Cloud", "20 Block Lockdown", or "New Lucifer / The Truth Is Bad". When questioned Kirk admits, "It's not really a political album, but over recent years -- during the recording -- all manner of horror show events have cropped up and now we seem to be in a rerun of the Cold War with Russia back as the Bogeyman." The album's title, Dasein (a German word meaning "being there" or "presence", often translated into English as "existence"), is a fundamental concept in existentialism. Kirk explains "culture succumbs to nostalgia in much the same way that an individual looks back wistfully to adolescence or childhood -- the nostalgia is partly for a time when he or she wasn't nostalgic, just lived purely in the now." In 2014, during the recording period, Kirk started performing live again with Cabaret Voltaire, so the two projects coexisted in tandem. Although Kirk's varied projects have always existed separate to one another, says Kirk, "in the past some solo works served as a blueprint for what I did later with Cabaret Voltaire."

HOMEWRECKERS Machinekiss LP
Kalakuta Soul Records present the Homewreckers' new full-length album, Machinekiss. The Ruhr valley-raised trio has been heavily involved in the underground dance music scene for many years and the soulfulness of their output is unquestioned. Now, Machinekiss might come as their masterpiece. Recorded over the course of three years, the album's nine tracks evolved out of a long, in-depth investigation of blues and funk recordings from 1910 to 1980. As the sole sonic sources, the musicians -- Johannes Ehmann, Gregor Pottmeier, and Krischan Wesenberg -- use their own music collections, making the work a reflection of their personal and collaborative history and backgrounds. Micro particles of guitar chords, organ sounds, and drum elements reappear in new contexts and are fused with contemporary synthesizer and bass motifs. The results are deep, rhythmic, complex, and eccentric, leading the listener into the melancholic, more obscure sides of urban life. The Homewreckers have previously released on Thee Blak Label/Radikal Fear (Chicago), Groove Attack Productions (Cologne), Unique Records (Düsseldorf), and Circus Company (Paris). Featured artists: Johannes Ehmann - bass, digging, sampling, arrangement, slicing; Gregor Pottmeier - organs, reeds, fractured sampling, dequantization; Krischan Wesenberg - drums, engineering, shaping, balancing. KOHN Kreis Plon CD
Almost 20 years ago, Jürgen De Blonde debuted on Kraak with the nowadays unfindable and almost visionary album 1 (1998). It was the starting point for a vital and wondrous exploration that lead him over paths of glitch, idm, shoe gaze, hypnagogic pop, improvised music, straight forward synth music, field recordings, and kraut... In the middle of this ungraspable adventure through contemporary electronic music, Köhn stands as a genuine artist that stayed true to the curious spirit of the DIY knob twiddling and boggling boy he once was. Kraak present his seventh album on the label, Kreis Plön, which documents and envisions 20 years of exploring. It's an album that is about a fusion of the past and the future, of separation and reconfiguration, of mourning and rejoicing, of noise and peace. Kreis Plön is about geolocation. It's about probable fiction and looking for bits of different puzzles that fit together. It's an exercise in linear and perpendicular coherence devoid of any objective logic. In the middle of the album an artist is envisioning his place in the now, questioning how or when he got there, as he links memories to imaginary places, and real places, to imaginary histories. Kreis Plön stands as such a masterpiece that bluntly envisions the future of electronic music. Mastered by Karel De Backer; Recorded and produced by Jürgen De Blonde; Artwork and design by Ruttens-Wille.

LUCKY+LOVE Lucky+Love LP
LP version. White vinyl. Los Angeles-based duo Lucky+Love present their self-titled debut album. These eight electrified tracks were written when bandmates Loren Luck (drums, synths) and April Love (vocals, keyboards, guitar) were living next to a noisy construction site in Glendale, California. Here, they successfully incorporate synth-heavy bass with polyphonic harmonies and crystalline vocals, propelling the music into trance-inducing territory. Inspired by artists such as New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Depeche Mode, Washed Out, Tycho, and Cocteau Twins, their sound falls beautifully into an everyman's land between electro rock, dream pop, electronica, and synth gaze. This music has, in the words of Loren Luck, "lots of LFO, riveting arpeggiations, simultaneous solos via spacey square waves, with April's smoky vocals." Lucky+Love is an electronic music record, but comes from a more traditional place, where OMD or Kraftwerk came from -- one of an unsampled, unprogrammed live recording originally at 192kHz/24-bit quality. "Musically, as much attention was paid sonically to the organic moog instruments as April's voice, and we offered the analog synths space in the songs to breathe to their true dynamic potential," says Loren Luck. This album came to light through recordings at Eagle Rock's Cave Studio with Josiah Mazzaschi, sessions with sound editor Morgen Stary, and comp-ny Studio, with Grammy winner Be Hussey (Guides). Lucky+Love currently write and record in their music studio in Echo Park, California. The video for the lead single "Digging In The Earth" was directed and edited by cinematographer and animator Steve Barron.

SOARES, ELZA End Of The World Remixes CD
Elza Soares returns with new remixes of tracks from her acclaimed The Woman At The End Of The World album (MAIS 031CD/LP, 2016). Mixing rock 'n roll, free-jazz, noise, and electronics, The Woman At The End Of The World was ripe for remixing and Mais Um Discos reached out to producers in London, Lisbon, New York, and Elza's hometown of Rio de Janeiro to create an album where the new school of cutting edge Lusophone producers -- and two legends from New York and London -- take Elza's music into new dimensions. From London there was only one man to go to for a remix -- DJ, broadcaster, label owner, and Elza's biggest fan, Gilles Peterson. Teaming up with Simbad they turn "Pra Fuder" into a percussive monster. Gilles on his contribution: "I played the album cut all 2016 and so needed a new version for this summer! An honor to work once again with my queen of grimy samba." SOARES, ELZA End Of The World Remixes LP
LP version. An honor to work once again with my queen of grimy samba." Representing the future sound of Lisbon are Principe Discos, DJ Marfox adds his rapid-fire future-Afro-Lisbon polyrhythms to "Maria Da Vila Matilde", and Nidia Minaj turns "Pra Fuder" into a dark and moody warehouse rattler. "The debut LP of this collaborator with Rhodri Davies and Chris Watson, evoking the knockabout, visionary, English humour of Jeff Keen and Bruce Lacy, spiked here with massive, steaming dollops of contemporary political outrage and disgust. 'Sounds are slurpy, runny, fizzy, spongy, hard as rock,' says the label, 'recalling long improvisational sets, floor-sucking dubwise psychedelia, plunderphonics and tight GRM-era electronic sound design.' Released to coincide with BD's summer-long exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in east London, nodding to everyone from Busby Berkeley to Max Ernst. TECHNO BERT Neue Dimensionen 12"
Originally released in 1990 on Doremix Records, Techno Bert was the studio project of Robert Passera and Stefano Cundari. "Neue Dimensionen" was developed on Siouxsie & The Banshees' well-known guitar riff in "Happy House", in a techno crescendo, where the duo enjoyed inserting as many samples as possible, stopping only when the sampler's memory was full. The vocal sample comes from "Herrmann Hiess Er" by Nina Hagen, cutting and pasting vocal fragments all around the track. Even without big sales numbers and without any radio passage, the song survived by virtue of a subtly underground connotation. Edition of 500.

KENNY AND THE KASUALS The Impact Sound Of The Kenny And The Kasuals LP
A reissue of The Impact Sound Of The Kenny And The Kasuals, originally released in 1966. Kenny And The Kasuals were an American, Dallas garage rock band founded in 1962, whose records are considered "among the most collectable LPs of the '60s". The band was formed at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, Texas, by Kenny Daniel, and was managed by Mark Lee, who later opened Dallas punk club, The Hot Klub. In 1966, their self-released single Journey To Tyme garnered some national radio airplay, including the number one spot in both Buffalo, New York, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it reached the top ten on the Dallas station KLIF. Prior to recording Journey To Tyme, the band had released an album titled The Impact Sound Of Kenny And The Kasuals Live At The Studio Club, although it was neither live nor recorded at the Studio Club. Only 500 copies of this album were originally pressed, and nearly half of those were destroyed by the Texas summer heat, but the remaining copies have become some of the most sought after vinyl records of the 1960s. Replica edition; Edition of 500.

GLOTMAN & MATS ERLANDSSON, YAIR ELAZAR Negative Chambers LP
This collaborative project between Mats Erlandsson and Yair Elazar Glotman draws on their respective musical backgrounds to create an imaginary, dislocated "folk" music for the current dark ages. The composers transform traditional instruments through current production techniques, forcing the instruments to lose any connection to historical or national contexts and focuses on local sounds. Negative Chambers feels completely timeless in its quiet minimalism, and it's made up of an array of instrumentation, such as gimbri, violin, karkaba, miniature cymbals, cello, harmonium, steel string acoustic guitar, zither, transistor radio, Tibetan singing bowl, amplified plate, and piano frame, partly led by a slow, almost spiritual contrabass. There is some incredibly detailed and wide sound design encompassing the pieces, from the pictorial stillness of "Orchid Sedation" to the unnerving mass of dissonant strings on "Ceramic Relic". Glotman and Erlandsson are masters in creating a sound filled with solitude, anxiety, and intrigue. Recorded both independently and in very close correspondence between Stockholm and Berlin, Negative Chambers is a dialog between the two composers, and manages to be both a meditative reflection on the past, while also presenting a surreal and detailed piece of contemporary music. Includes download code; Edition of 500.

LAKE PEOPLE Phase Transition CD
Framed by two spoken word samples and wrapped in house and techno emotions, that know about electro and '90s electronica too, the second album by the Leipzig and Berlin based producer Martin Enke, aka Lake People, moves in a fresh way. This time he shifts towards a focus on the essentials of electronic club music: sounds and groove, rough and playful interweaved with the aesthetic particles of techno. With his Point EP, released on the Berlin based imprint Krakatau Records in late 2012 (KKT 006EP), his creative life as a producer for melancholic driven club tunes took off. Several top notch DJs played the tune "Point In Time", Lake People started to tour world-wide with his mesmerizing live set and produced countless remixes for colleagues from all around the globe. In 2015, he finally released his first album Purposely Uncertain Field on the Munich based label Permanent Vacation (PERMVAC 136CD/LP) and delivered eleven tracks at the interface of techno, ambient, experimental, and electronic, that bewitch with hymnal chords, yearningly melodies, detailed production, elaborate sound design, and an overall introspective, emotive feeling. Now, just shortly after releasing Break The Pattern on the Dresden based imprint Uncanny Valley (2017), Lake People drops Phase Transition, a new album consisting of ten haunting tracks full of dance suspense. He recorded all the tracks between 2016 and early 2017 on various vintage analog synthesizers, UAD, and other creative interfaces. To find out if his latest pure slamming tracks work deep, he tried them out during his live shows in order to catch some new ideas directly from the dancefloor. Later he refitted the tested material so that all ten tunes dance together as a compact album, which at times sounds melancholic and vulnerable, but comes around at large in a more self-assured guise. You also experience in any tone, rhythmic twist, or melody that his latest music came naturally out of the soul of a producer, who constantly is doing music, at home or on the road. During this continual work flow, he created sparser, direct kicking spheres that still bring some drama to the party. A fine, moody, don't-stop-grooving record that follows a heartfelt syuzhet, which is full of temperament and devotion, partly Larry Heard-ish and straight like a bullet, carrying the audience from joy and whimsy, to melancholy and sugared desolation.

She recorded her first two singles for Ember Records in 1966 and 1967, featuring songs by songwriter and producer Tommy Scott. They are exquisite pop compositions with subtle arrangements, and Twiggy's voice is immediately captivating. The four tracks came out as an EP in France, which has inspired this reissue.

Belgian post punk band O Veux issue more than 40 tracks over two self-titled, archival, double vinyl compilations via Softspot Music (US) and OnderStroom Records (BE). The OnderStroom compilation, presented here, features unreleased and live recordings from 1981-1982, never before released on vinyl. The Softspot release features O Veux's complete studio recordings from 1982-1986, with additional unreleased tracks. The Flemish region of Belgium is known for its punk, post punk, and cold wave music in the 1980s, and yet a trove of bands like AA, The Cultural Decay, and Kebab came up in Flanders and self-released small runs of their own music. Another one of these un-famous bands was O Veux. In the early '80s, four unemployed guys from Hasselt, Belgium sought out raw, progressive music in order to escape the boredom of their daily lives. Heavily influenced by the Hasselt music scene, a breeding ground for left-of-center groups, the guys decided to form their own band. Despite the fact that none of them could actually play an instrument, they were committed to the fundamental belief that anyone could play if they so desired. So Rudi Reners, Marc Vandezande, Valentin Smeyers, and Ivo Geurts bought the cheapest instruments they could find and started O Veux. For fans of Mars, DNA, The Cultural Decay, and De Brassers. TRANQUIL EYES Fact & Fiction LP
OnderStroom present the second Tranquil Eyes album Fact & Fiction, delivering poignant and exciting synth-wave songs, drenched in an eternal '80s feel, well-crafted and complete. Tranquil Eyes is a Dutch minimal synth band formed in 1982. Lex Grauwen and Paul Oosterbaan had worked together for about eight years before they formed Tranquil Eyes. They decided to turn their back to stage performances and started experimenting with home-taping. Using an array of electronics, they recorded a great amount of songs and made a fine selection on Walks, their first and only release (1985). After digging into the archives, with a lot of restoring, recording and re-mastering, there's Fact & Fiction. The album is an extension of Walks, both in genre and in spirit. Comprising a selection of lost tracks, compilation-only releases, unreleased songs, and even two newly recorded songs, Fact & Fiction gives a great view on the band's musical abilities and influences over the years. FRA LIPPO LIPPI In Silence LP
OnderStroom present Fra Lippo Lippi's In Silence, originally released in 1981. Fra Lippo Lippi was a gothic post-punk band founded in Nesodden, Norway in 1978. Band members included Rune Kristoffersen (guitar, bass, keyboards, piano) Per Oystein Sorensen (vocals, synthesizer, keyboards), and Morten Sjoberg (drums, keyboards). Their sound was heavily influenced by bands such as Joy Division and The Cure. In 1981, the band recorded and released In Silence, a hard to grasp, dark album with ominous basslines, death-march percussion, pensive keyboards, and sinister, indecipherable vocals. The band had installed a semi-professional four-track recording studio in a small basement. The recording of the album started in June 1981 and it took four months to complete. Rune Kristoffersen on the record: "It took a long time. Our compositions were based on the drums and the bass, which we colored with guitars, voices, and keyboards. The sound was completely natural, both concrete and abstract." It's difficult to hear the vocals; it's as if it was mixed far behind the instruments. It's nearly impossible to understand the lyrics. In that sense, it is not unlike producer Martin Hannett's work for Factory Records in the UK. Rune Kristoffersen continues, "It is made quite conscious: put the voices far back to create a mood music. I also look at In Silence in a certain connection to what Brian Eno did with his ambient music." In 1998, Rune started releasing experimental music on his very own label called Rune Grammofon, where he has highlighted many experimental Norwegian acts such as Arne Nordheim, Supersilent, and Motorpsycho. Remastered by Equus; Layout by Jeroen Wille; Edition of 500."In Silence has a more unrefined sound and should have any fan of Joy Division wishing they'd heard of this band sooner. If I were to review Closer or Unknown Pleasures today, they'd obviously receive 5/5. Therefore, since Fra Lippo Lippi is so strangely similar, and In Silence is almost like having a new Joy Division/New Order album, I'd be hard pressed to give it a anything less than a near perfect score. Find out for yourself what you've missed out on for the past twenty years. Wow!" --Tiny Mix Tapes

ORCUTT, BILL Bill Orcutt CD
For those not following Bill Orcutt's drift into increasingly ear-friendly orbits in his recent live sets, Bill Orcutt -- his first solo electric studio album -- shocks with its space and sensitivity. On this eponymous record, Orcutt mines the expansiveness and sustain possible on the electric guitar, letting notes spin out and decay at the edge of feedback. His pachinko-parlor pacing, marked by unraveling clockspring accelerandos crashing into unexpectedly suspended tones, is still in evidence. But here, his developing melodicism maps a near-contemplative mental realm, orbiting St. Joan-era Loren Connors more than the cascading treble clatter of his duo LPs with Chris Corsano and others. From the first notes of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman", there's a lucidity and slow-burning lyricism that make Orcutt's plunges into barbed-wire fingerpicking all the more striking. While no one's about to mistake Orcutt for Jim Hall, you could probably play this for your jazzbo friends (should you be unlucky enough to have them) without raising any eyebrows. Orcutt's track selection mirrors his obsession with American popular song in its most banal manifestations, as radically reimagined via acoustic guitar on a variety of releases, including 2013's exhaustive Twenty Five Songs 7" box set, and the Editions Mego album A History of Every One (EMEGO 173CD/LP, 2013). Many of the songs from those two releases are here -- but stretched into new arrangements that explore the upper regions of the guitar neck (hitherto unexplorable on his shakily-intonated acoustic Kay), and lighting up new corners of each arrangement with a sensitivity born from years of reinterpretation. The result is a languid, freeform drift through Orcutt's internal cosmos into galaxies unknown to their original interpreters -- and occasionally, Orcutt himself. Most striking is "White Christmas", its careening low-register melodies crashing into complex chords that transcend Orcutt's primitive four-string fretboard. Orcutt's original compositions are equally striking. One of them -- "The World Without Me" -- is unique to this album, and notable for its trebly flurry of Clapton-esque 12th-fret drizzle. "O Platitudes!" by contrast, spins ever-faster in the cadence of a hand-cranked music box, before grinding to a near halt, its higher-key electricity standing in for the moaning vocalizations on Orcutt's acoustic rendition as heard on his 2014 VDSQ LP. With its deep-space beauty, harmonic complexity, and dark dissonance, Bill Orcutt is a stunning landmark in Orcutt's form-destroying trajectory.

DAMIEN DUBROVNIK Great Many Arrows LP
Great Many Arrows is the sixth studio album from Damien Dubrovnik, the Danish duo of Loke Rahbek and Christian Stadsgaard. It is also the 200th release on their Posh Isolation label, marking eight years for both the label and project. The label's inception came with Damien Dubrovnik's debut album, and since then the two have been inseparable. Without Damien Dubrovnik there would most likely have been no Posh Isolation, and vice versa. Great Many Arrows is undoubtedly a high point in the varied discographies of both Rahbek and Stadsgaard. It is the most realized Damien Dubrovnik recording to date, and a standout in Posh Isolation's troves. As a record, Great Many Arrows manages to translate the intensity of the duo's often unrestrained live shows in to carefully crafted studio productions. Unlike the pair's earlier and largely electronic recordings, the compositions on Great Many Arrows set organs, cellos, violas, wind, and other acoustic instruments against the backdrop of an electronic landscape. The new toolset is as apparent on the surface as it is in the enclosed detail, taking the project further from its noise roots than it has ever been. This is not to say that Rahbek and Stadsgaard have traded ferocity for formal constraint. It is rather the opposite. While Great Many Arrows is certainly the pair's most "musical" work to date, its veneer of accessibility might also make it their most terrifying. The strength of the recording lies in the interaction between the melodic, acoustic instrumentation and the bulldozing electronics. Moments of beauty and light are transfigured into utter chaos and rage, the mesmerizing change an expression of the equal and opposite form's natural sway as it beckons and slips between its own passing. Great Many Arrows takes its name from a historic archery competition in Kyoto, Japan, in which archers would shoot as many arrows as possible for a 24-hour period. On April 26, 1686, Wasa Daihachiro from Kish? successfully shot 8,133 out of 13,053 arrows, averaging 544 arrows an hour, or nine arrows a minute, becoming the record holder.

KING TUBBY AND THE AGGROVATORS Shalom Dub CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of King Tubby And The Aggrovators' Shalom Dub, originally released in 1975. The house band of Bunny "Striker" Lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of Jamaica's most prominent and musically expressive session players. The shifting core line-up spun off from the Soul Syndicate and thus typically featured Earl "Chinna" Smith and Tony Chin on guitar and Bernard "Touter" Harvey on organ. Carlton "Santa" was the main drummer, but Carlton Barrett of the Wailers band and "Benbow" Creary were sometimes featured. Most crucially, on bass, Aston "Family Man" Barrett shifted to Fully Fullwood (and occasionally, Earl "Bagga" Walker), until Robbie Shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. The band was responsible for the popular "flying cymbal" style that took Jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975. Its excellent cuts of Cornell Campbell and Johnnie Clarke material mixed at King Tubby's studio are a must for all serious fans of dub. CD version includes two bonus tracks.

The first side voyeuristically and objectively documents Gabi's external experiences and habitats; in this instance, a conversation heard while riding public transportation. The second side of this record turns back in on the artist herself with an associative monologue, in which an understanding of her own artwork is examined. It is fair and honest and walks through the whole house leaving windows open. There is a small piece of film which separates, seemingly, Gabi's daily life and her artwork. It is quite inspiring. Understanding this can instill the same mysterious allure into your own trials and leisures. Losoncy is a part of Good Area with Allen Mozek. Comes with artist's bumper sticker; Edition of 300.

CONNORS, LOREN Evangeline LP
Recital present the first-time vinyl issue of Loren Connors's Evangeline, originally released as a limited CD in 1998. Evangeline finds Connors working in a narrative structure. This album trails the story of Evangeline, the heroine of an epic-poem written in 1847. Loren's guitar tone follows the weary landscapes and mournful souls of the characters. Thematically, Evangeline falls in line with the other romantic Connors LPs Recital has published, Airs (2015) and Lullaby (2016), though with a defining arc in direction. Parallel guitar preludes begin this collection, leading to distant ballads in spheres of reverb. Suzanne Langille softly singing on the first track sets this album as a child's fable. As longing, clouded in dreams of loss and devotion. Includes an 8.5"x11" insert: a story written by Suzanne Langille based on the epic poem, Evangeline; Includes restored audio and new artwork by Loren Connors; Remastered for vinyl by Sean McCann; Edition of 500.

LORA-TOTINO, ARRIGO Out Of Page LP
A collection of recordings by the Italian sound and concrete poet Arrigo Lora-Totino (1928-2016). His place in the history and development of poetical intermedia is undisputed. Out Of Page holds fourteen voice-based tape works made from the years 1968 to 2000. While there is some use of cut-up tape manipulation, the artistry truly lies in his performance of the sound plays. Multi-tracking is utilized and Arrigo's nebulous voice paintings splat and click and glide. His bold expression is inspiring to me: it leads by example in encouraging the pulling of oneself further into their art. Sean McCann on the record: "I was staying at a hotel in San Francisco when I awoke in a sunfilled room to an email from Giovanni Fontana telling me that Arrigo had passed away. I was saddened by the departure of such a creative man, yet proud to be working with and perpetuating his legacy." Includes 16-page pamphlet with score excerpts, artwork, and program notes written by Totino, and an essay written by Giovanni Fontana; Restored and mastered by Sean McCann; Edition of 310.

HIGGINS, DICK Poems And Metapoems LP
Recital present a reissue of Dick Higgins's Poems And Metapoems, originally released on cassette by New Wilderness Audiographics in 1982. Label head Sean McCann on the reissue: "Since the beginning of Recital, I have been trying to publish the work of Dick Higgins. He is a chief figure in my artistic world, a hero of mine. And now, with the assistance of Charlie Morrow, it has finally happened. The first vinyl album ever published of Higgins! Many know Dick Higgins as the father of intermedia, a key player in the birth of fluxus, and the owner/operator of the fabulous Something Else Press. His own poetry is what stirred me. Namely, his book Foew & Ombwhnw (1969), which contains one of my favorite of his works, 'Moments in the Lives of Great Women,' along with other lovely poems (some included on this LP). This recording is of Dick himself reading his own poetry. Poems And Metapoems begins with a voice/tape manipulation piece from 1962, while the rest of the collection employs only language manipulation. Alike a cantor, each word is delivered perfectly with strong warmth. His ability to relay pattern-based poems into sonics is impressive. This album was recorded in 1982, and contains the reading of poems written between 1958-1980. Originally published as a cassette tape by New Wilderness Audiographics, which is nearly impossible to find now. The audio has been remastered and cleaned up for this edition. Dick lived large and was a busybody. All the faucets were running within him, handles broken off. Always pulling to mesh painfulness with playfulness, heart-warmth with heartbreak, comedy with tragedy etc. It is this plurality that Higgins encourages us to spark and flourish." Includes a 16-page pamphlet of notes and poetry by Higgins and an essay on both Higgins and New Wilderness Audiographics by Charlie Morrow; Edition of 470.

TRILION Ain't No Future With No Past LP
At the borders of rub-a-dub dancehall and experimental electronica you'll find the music of Trilion. This ram-shackle raggamuffin Israeli collective mutated from a collaboration between acid rock band 3421, the Easy Rider emcees, and Ranking Levy from My Lord sound system. Their debut album Ain't No Future With No Past is a seamless fusion of sparse dubscapes, saw-toothed psychedelia, and raw dancehall vibes. Trilion productions bubble through a myriad of unusual moods from blissful to threatening. By contrast the lyrics courtesy of Levy, General G, Yuta B, Mentor Irie, Guma Ranks, and the exquisitely exuberant Miss Red, are feisty and down to earth. Describing themselves as a "musical Caesar salad", Trilion's music, like their line-up, is in a constant state of flux. Splicing the strut-and-thrust of a sound system party with disruptive digital dystopia, Ain't No Future With No Past is reminder that everything is connected -- and music opens the mind...

JOHNSON, RAGNAR Ethiopian Urban And Tribal Music: Mindanoo Mistiru/Gold From Wax 2CD
Sub Rosa present a reissue of volume one (Mindanoo Mistiru) and two (Gold From Wax) of Ethiopian Urban And Tribal Music, both originally released as two distinct LPs on Lyrichord in 1972. Mindanoo Mistiru and Gold From Wax were recorded by Ragnar Johnson. Ethiopia contains many diverse peoples and many styles of music. It was still an empire in July and August of 1971 when these recordings were made. Over 70 languages and 200 dialects are spoken in Ethiopia. In much of the music, lyrics are more important than instrumentation, and the transmission is oral. The urban musicians, the bagana, and Mary Armeede, were recorded in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian urban musicians come from many parts of the country and are familiar with, and adapt to, styles of regions other than their own. The Afar divination chants and flutes were recorded in the Danakil desert. The Anuak toum and Nuer harp, lament and dance were recorded near the Sudan border. The Konso dance and the Gidole Fila flute dance were recorded near the Kenya border. Mindanoo Mistiru means "What is the Unknown?". Gold From Wax refers to the two layers of meaning in Amharic poetry. File under: Le Coeur du Monde. Double CD version comes in a six-panel digipack; Includes booklet.

DUVELLE AND HISHAM MAYET, CHARLES The Photographs of Charles Duvelle: Disques Ocora and Collection Prophet 2CD/BOOK
Disques Ocora, a French label dedicated to capturing and publishing the sounds of folkloric culture from around the world, is held in the highest possible regard in the realms of professional and amateur ethnomusicology. Instigated in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer, the founder of musique concrète, Disques Ocora's sterling reputation is largely built on composer and musicologist Charles Duvelle's pioneering field recordings, as well as his now-iconic photographs and graphic design. Charles Duvelle's work is indisputably one of the most important contributions to the human understanding of the rich biodiversity of our planet's music and language. In 1977, his field recordings from Benin were selected by Carl Sagan for inclusion on the Voyager Golden Records, which were carried into outer space by the Voyager spacecraft to stand as an example of humanity's highest musical expressions for the universe's unknown listeners. Sublime Frequencies' most ambitious project to date, this 296-page fine-art photography book comprises an exhaustive collection of Charles Duvelle's field photography from 1959 to 1978 (188 black-and-white and 58 color photographs), demonstrating that this master musicologist had an equally unerring eye for photography; Includes a photo index listing the details of each photograph. It also contains an exhaustive interview with Charles Duvelle by Hisham Mayet, detailing the history of the label and offering Duvelle's unique insights into the discipline of field recording (French and English facing text). The package includes two full-length CDs of archival recordings (some of which have never been published) selected, compiled, and fully annotated by Duvelle himself. Most of the tracks on CD one (Africa) are complete versions of truncated tracks from OOP Ocora LPs. CD two, which includes performances by Sohan Lal, Kheo Oudon, and Madurai Ramaswami Gautam, is focused on material from Asia (music from India and Laos), with two long tracks that have never been released (a third track is a complete unedited version). The material focuses on the five regions surveyed during his time with Ocora: West Africa, Central Africa, Indian Ocean, Pacific Islands, and SouthEast Asia. It includes "Disques Ocora / Charles Duvelle Discography, 1959-1974", a complete overview illustrated with 94 full-color album thumbnails, "The Prophet Collection, 1999-2004" a discography of Duvelle's post-Ocora label illustrated with 41 full-color album thumbnails, "Eastern Music in Black Africa", a 17-page report prepared by Charles Duvelle at the request of UNESCO (February 1970), and a review of the Ocora catalogues (1964-1973). In a tribute to Disques Ocora's exquisite design sensibility, the book is printed on 170 gsm Lumisilk matte art paper and bound in grey buckram with gold foil stamping on the cover and spine. The front cover includes a tipped-on glossy photograph by Charles Duvelle. Hardcover book; 10"x10"; 296 pages; 4.5 lbs. Produced and edited by Hisham Mayet.

EREK, CEVDET Davul CD
Ahead of his representing Turkey at 2017's Venice Biennale, Subtext presents Istanbul-based Cevdet Erek's first full-length album Davul. The title refers to the instrument performed by Erek, a large drum with many names, common from Eastern Europe to the Middle East, known variably as a daouli (Greek), tapan (Macedonian), dahol (Kurdish), or tabl (Arabic), to cite a few. Erek plays the drum with his own unusual method, utilizing a large soft mallet alongside various smaller implements to beat and distort the skin of the drum, tuned lower than normal, taking advantage of being able to walk around the studio or installation spaces with the instrument. Erek acquired the drum from a Roma musician, and proceeded to play it in private for years where he developed this new textural approach, integrating the instrument into his A Room of Rhythms installation piece at Istanbul Biennial in 2015. Comprising extracts culled from hours of solo drum improvisations recorded over two days in Berlin, Davul features no editing or overdubbing. At times Erek describes "playing to get the negative and aggressive away from inside of me, hoping that I could do the same for the other people surrounding me." He refers to a shamanic history of healing rituals -- although the davul is most commonly used for weddings, dances, and celebrations. "Of course the aesthetics of dark electronics and noise that I've been exposed to for decades informs the overall feel as well," adds Erek. Over seven improvised pieces, Erek conjures a massive variety of uncharacteristic sounds and colors from the drum, from deep scrapes and grinds to heavy rubs and drones, creating complex rhythms. Experimentation with rhythm, meter, and silence has always been at the core of what Erek does -- from his work as a conceptual artist, presenting work at the likes of dOCUMENTA, to decades as the drummer in Turkish experimental rock band Nekropsi -- but Davul is his purest statement-of-intent to date; a raw and hypnotic exploration of flow and dynamics. Cevdet Erek was born in Istanbul in 1974, where he would initially study Architecture. Originally formed in 1989, Erek has also been the longtime drummer with Turkish experimental music stalwarts, Nekropsi. Erek has also worked on sound and music for film, most recently contributing original music and sound design to Emin Alper's 2015 film Frenzy (SUB 017LP, 2016).

TELESCOPES, THE As Light Return LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Evolving oscillations of guitar feedback screech and howl through thick layers of distortion. Overtones shift and drift and combine on a carpet of white noise. In the eye of the storm, the voice of Stephen Lawrie remains calm, almost detached. He intones a low, trance-like chant. The vocal is buried deep in the mix, the lyrics just barely discernible. "My specific intention is always to create a listening experience reaching beyond the realm of natural vision. I see duality and multiple meaning everywhere, this is reflected in the way my inspiration is formed, of impressions released in such a way where the meaning is subjective to the listener." The Telescopes are back with their ninth album, As Light Return. Founded by Lawrie in 1987, the band has been through various phases and a long list of different members and associates. This time he is joined once again by members of the band St Deluxe, tracking the album at the esteemed Riverside Music Complex in Glasgow. The only constant member of The Telescopes, however, is Stephen Lawrie himself. The variable constellation has become part of the concept. As Light Return is The Telescopes' second album for the Hamburg label Tapete Records, following the release of Hidden Fields in 2015 (TR 318CD/LP). The new album maintains the balance of its predecessor, setting a parallel course between song-based noise structures and freeform impressionism, while containing some of The Telescopes' most crucial listening so far. "Every record I make is different from any others I have made so there is no control to measure against except to say that The Telescopes house has many rooms and, like the previous album, this album takes a peek inside every room rather than remaining in one. Yet despite having an uplifting album title, the subject matter on these recordings is a lot darker than on Hidden Fields." Tracks like "You Can't Reach What You Hunger", "Hand Full Of Ashes" as well as the album's similarly titled 14-minute closer "Handful Of Ashes" seem to contain an innate wisdom for the listener to decipher. After thirty years of pursuing his singular artistic vision, Stephen Lawrie is more focused than ever. These songs pay no heed to conventionalities. This music has an implicit power. The listener is free to enter a vast sonic universe and determine a personal set of coordinates.

TABAKIN, JON Jon Tabakin CD
Tapete present the first reissue of Jon Tabakin's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. After spending his teen years in local bands, Tabakin had a motorcycle accident at the age of 19. This experience turned his attention inward, focusing on musical composition and poetry, rather than performing. After graduating, he wanted to sell the songs he had written during that time, which would become his sole record. He bought a Teac 4-track and laid down keys, guitar, and vocals himself, in his apartment. The rhythm section was added on later in the studio, with Tabakin overdubbing the bass. The record was pressed up under the banner of Larrow Records and sold a few copies locally, but ultimately went nowhere. Disheartened by the lack of interest, Tabakin switched his focus from pop writing to more classically-influenced piano improvisations. Tapes of these recordings ended up with RCA, who thought he was ready to "break-out" -- but his reluctance to tour as an improvisational pianist nixed the deal. After this second opportunity petered out, he all but turned his back on music and went on to graduate studies, eventually becoming a psychoanalyst. Tabakin's self-titled effort is one of the best kept secrets of pop music. Now a highly-coveted collector's album, the songs sit together and mesh so perfectly, despite each track having its own distinct personality. It's an ode to pop music, all-encompassing and intensely personal at the same time. Some internet comments about Jon Tabakin: "I can't tell you how happy I am to own this LP. It's fantastic lo-fi, very authentic Todd Rundgren inspired pop. His voice isn't perfect, but that's fine, his passion is infectious. This is not a record filled with radio ready pop songs but it's a grower; it has a slow burn. It's a perfect expression of one guy's musical enthusiasm." "Incredible and super obscuro homemade 70s outsider folk rock singer songwriter. Hard to classify, especially because the instrumentation varies from song to song. There's a strong Brian Wilson west coast 60s sunshine pop recluse undercurrent throughout, with the strange addition of prominent 70s progressive keyboard/organ moves on several tracks. This guy obviously spent many hours orchestrating this material, and there's plenty here to keep things interesting for repeated listens." CD version comes in an edition of 500.

ZEBRA HUNT In Phrases LP
2015 was a busy year for Seattle's Zebra Hunt. Drummer Mitch Leffler, bassist Erik Bennett, and singer/guitarist Robert Mercer released their debut album City Sighs on Tenorio Cotobade (2015), and supported it with shows in the US Pacific Northwest. Its marriage of the chiming pop legacy of the '80s Flying Nun catalog and the crystal-like beauty of the Paisley Underground scene was praised worldwide, and the album would be included in several "Best of 2015" lists. In June of that year, Zebra Hunt traveled to Spain for a whole week of brilliant shows which gained them many new Spanish fans. That tour also brought the addition of Aaron Sheedy to the line-up as guitarist and keyboard player. Apart from presenting their debut album, the shows served to write and test new material while the band got used to their new dynamic. The four-piece went into the studio in 2016 to record their new album In Phrases with legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino, renowned for his work with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, and many others. Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Total Control), who has worked on several of the band's favorite records of recent years, has mastered the twelve new tracks. Marrying the energy and dynamism of their live shows with pop songs that sparkle and shine, on their second album, Zebra Hunt have delivered a collection of twelve tunes with melodic and lyrical confidence. Whether in gentle, minor-key mode on "Lonely Summer" or firing on all cylinders on the insistent and propulsive "What I Want" and Farfisa-fueled "Follow", the band thrums as much as it jangles, pulsing rhythms anchoring and framing guitars slowly unspooling silvery lines or attacking with a frantic strum. Setting scenes with a knack for lyrical evocation of times and places long gone, Zebra Hunt will leave you alternately sighing and swinging to the beat.

PORTER RICKS Anguilla Electrica CD
First full-length in seventeen years from the Chain Reaction/Force Inc. legends. Ever since their initial singles were released in the mid-1990s and became international calling cards for the Chain Reaction label, the Porter Ricks duo of Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig have represented that crucible point in which techno music leaked into new social environments and became the background music for cutting-edge cultural critique. Their submerged "scuba" sound, presented in dark tone colors and reverberating to infinity, is now instantly identifiable as one of the "soundmarks" of Berlin club culture. Just as importantly, it is still a palpable aftershock of a pre-millenial genre explosion that saw deep dub, shimmering post-rock, abstract hip-hop, and art-damaged noise all drinking from the same well of inspiration. For proof of Porter Ricks's enduring legacy, look no further than the fact that "dub techno" is now a stylistic movement that has expanded far beyond the confines of Berlin and the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction label alliance (where Mellwig's mastering skills also played a starring role). Lurid traces of Porter Ricks's aesthetic can now be found in the work of producers like Andy Stott and Miles Whittaker, showing the potential for the duo's unique "aquatic" techniques to be applied to a variety of different musical contexts. Their new LP on Tresor, Anguilla Electrica, may be their first full-length release in seventeen full years, but it radiates with confidence and with a clarity and intensity rarely seen in a world so over-saturated with communications noise. It's made clear at once that it's a continuation of a sonic ideal rather than a tribute to what has already been achieved: the duo is not idly sitting back while their newer acolytes do their talking for them. This new LP is well worth the wait and is a life-affirming one in an uncertain and perilous time, drowning out daily anxieties like a rush of incoming surf -- yet it is far more invigorating than relaxing. True to the Porter Ricks's tradition, it will be just as exciting hearing this music as it will be to experience what new cultural mutations it leaves in its wake.

VA Strictly Britxotica! Palais Pop And Locarno Latin LP
Another superb adventure in the Britxotica! series, looking into rare and amazing exotic British recordings. For this exciting installment, Trunk waltzes to the British ballrooms for charismatic cha cha chas, magical mambos, and a whole set of floor-filling fun! Britxotica! (pronounced "Britzotica") neatly describes an odd and yet undocumented pre-Beatles British musical scene where famed UK composers, as well as unknown singers and bandleaders, threw convention on holiday and went wild. Put together by Jonny Trunk with DJ/tastemaker and smashing nightclub legend Martin Green, these groundbreaking compilations shine new light on lost and forgotten corners of British culture and sound. For Strictly Britxotica! Palais Pop And Locarno Latin, part four of Trunk's planned Britxotica! series, they head to the now defunct British ballrooms for a set of dynamic and often extraordinary dance numbers -- charming cha cha chas (including "Cha Cha Pop Pop"), lively Latin, and some fabulously freaky foot tappers, including a classic version of "Cerveza". Composers and artists include ballroom band legends such as Edmundo Ros, Ted Heath, and Stanley Black, but Trunk have also found work by lost geniuses such as John Graven and John Warren who are very much worthy of reappraisal. In short, this is another crazy and charismatic compilation of British music so obscure and rare that only Trunk Records could find and package it so superbly, and with such effortless and comedic style. Also features: Boyer And Ravel, Joe Loss, Johnston Brothers, Tony Scott, Tony Crombie, John Warren Orchestra, Martinas And His Music, Phil Tate, Dave Lee, John Graven Quintet, Don Carlos, Chaquito, Jack Parnell, Eddie Calvert, and Victor Silvester. FRUKO Y SUS TESOS Tesura LP
"Though the modern style of New York Latin music known as salsa penetrated South America during the mid to late 1960s, and Colombia had its share of bands and recordings influenced by this new strain of Cuban-influenced urban Latin dance music, it wasn't until Medellín's Fruko Y Sus Tesos first hit the scene in the early 1970s that the genre began to really take off in a home-grown, domestic form. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, band-leader/bassist/producer Julio Ernesto Estrada (aka Fruko) would develop and tweak his own take on this sound, the arrangements becoming more complex and original over time. In 1968, Fruko personally experienced the burgeoning salsa scene on a tour with Los Corraleros de Majagual when they went to Caracas and New York, inspiring him to form the Tesos (local slang for tough guys who know it all and are on top of their game, bestowed upon the band by Fruko's lead trumpeter, Jorge Gaviria) in 1969. Tesura (from 1970) is Fruko Y Sus Tesos' debut record. It displays a diamond-in-the-rough simplicity born of the street, flaunting an uncompromising macho menace that is compelling in its focus and elemental integrity, heavily influenced by Willie Colón's gangster posturing in New York. As Fruko has said, when Tesura was first released Colombians were convinced it was in fact recorded by a Nuyorican group, so thoroughly did it break with previous Colombian tastes, which until then had been mostly for bambuco, tango, ranchera or cumbia. . . . From the severely separated audio channeling to the uncompromising rhythmic approach and ubiquitous sharp trumpet stabs in the style of Ricardo Ray and Ray Barretto, Tesura more than lives up to its title (slang for 'toughness'). Fruko is right out front, his giant electric bass positioned in the center. The emphasis is on allowing the musicians to flex their muscles and strut their stuff, with many purely instrumental sections in a descarga (jam session) style echoing the freedoms being explored by the previously mentioned New York heavyweights Ray, Colón and Barretto, as well as Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow, Louie Ramírez and Johnny Pacheco. . . . The vocalist for this record is Humberto 'Huango' Muriel (shown on the cover with the cigar and attack dog), who had been in Sexteto Miramar." --Pablo Yglesias, aka DJ Bongohead This first ever reissue is presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

LAZA Y SUS PELAYEROS, PEDRO Rito Esclavo LP
"In 1952 [Pedro Laza Gutiérrez] founded the Sonora Pelayera, which in 1958 became known as Pedro Laza Y Sus Pelayeros when, under the supervision of Antonio Fuentes of Discos Fuentes, Laza was contracted to back Puerto Rican bohemian crooner Daniel Santos for the hit album Candela (1976). . . . Laza had fallen in love with the big band sound of swing jazz and the mambo of Pérez Prado, Benny Moré, Machito and Tito Puente . . . Laza also drew from Colombia's own brass band traditions, of which San Pelayo is a famous exponent, especially with brass band arrangements of coastal genres like cumbia, fandango and porro. . . . Rito Esclavo was an early Discos Fuentes stereo LP album and Laza's eighth as leader of Los Pelayeros, being released to great success in 1961. Listening to the album evokes a bygone era of nattily dressed dancers swaying and sashaying across a hotel patio floor to the big band sounds of velvety saxophones, thrilling trumpets and tumbling drums under tall palm trees lit by moonlight as the sea laps the sand in the distance. Questionable cheesecake bondage album cover art aside, the record itself is distinguished by high quality engineering (a hallmark of Discos Fuentes engineer José María Fuentes) that still holds up more than half a century later, with bright and deceptively intricate interlocking brass featuring a distinctive reed section, rolling tropical percussion and a wide variety of Caribbean rhythms from both Colombia (cumbia, porro, paseaíto, fandango) and Cuba (cha-cha-chá, mambo). There are only two vocal numbers, the previously mentioned 'La Mafafa' (also a hit for La Sonora Cordobesa) and the minor-key exotica title song 'Rito Esclavo' (Slave Rite) sung by Mario Gareña, which is among one of the more dramatic cumbia hits of the 'golden era' Discos Fuentes catalog. Of the instrumentals, all are top notch but some especially stand out: 'Señora Santana' has an infectious melody, while 'Lindo Magdalena', named after the Río Magdalena, a river that snakes through a region that is one of the cradles of Colombian folkloric music, is a classic cumbia that effortlessly blends urban big band instrumentation and authentic sounding indigenous percussion." --Pablo Yglesias (DJ Bongohead) Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

MEZA Y SU COMBO GIGANTE, LISANDRO Salsita Mami LP
"Lisandro Meza (born in 1939) is one of Colombia's most talented all around musical giants, still going strong today. Equally adept at playing musical instruments (accordion, piano, guitar, bass, gaita) as he is at composition and singing, Meza has recorded just about every type of Colombian genre as well as his own decidedly Colombian versions of salsa, Afrobeat, funk and disco . . . In 1961 Meza joined Los Corraleros de Majagual under the leadership of Manuel Cervantes . . . Perhaps taking a page from bandleaders like Benny Moré, Cortijo and Kako, Meza decided to name this new band his Combo Gigante -- indicating a compact unit but with a big sound, inspired by Cuban, Puerto Rican, and New York orchestras of the time. Meza's outfit was augmented by two additional vocalists, Lucho Gómez and Lucho Peñate, who had a good feel for the New York sound. Unlike many budding salsa bands at the time, for the first record Salsita Mami (released 14 September 1970), Meza's arrangements put the saxophone out front on several songs. The band also features the tambourine, a major addition to New York Latin music during the boogaloo craze, with plenty of space for the piano, timbales, and brass to stretch out on the largely improvised montunos. If one listens to Fruko Y Sus Tesos from this same time period, a similar uncompromisingly hard sound is apparent, especially with the bass and prominent cowbell, as well as swaggering, ominous melodies and a certain odd funkiness inspired by the coastal rhythms of the indigenous cumbia and porro. . . . There are no Meza originals here, but the cover tunes are inspiringly done: check out the fiery version of Joey Pastrana's 'Cha Ca Boom' or the fun 'A Romper El Coco' -- called 'El Coco' here, made famous originally by Benny Moré with Pérez Prado; plus there's 'Soy Dichoso', which was a smash for Tommy Olivencia and Chamaco Ramírez in 1967, a version of Milton Zapata's 'Milton's Jala Jala' (called 'Arrebata' here) and the Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera anthem from 1961 'Sabroso Guaguancó'; not to mention 'Cuca La Loca' -- a hit for Willie Rosario and his vocalist Adalberto Santiago in 1968." --Pablo Yglesias (DJ Bongohead) Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

DE VITO, MARIA PIA Core [Coracao] CD
Core [Coração], the new album from Maria Pia De Vito, was recorded between Rome and Paris. It is a record that is very much felt, and it is intensely transcultural; the title clearly indicates a work of the heart, whose candle was lit by Maria Pia's encounter with the Brazilian composer and guitarist Guinda, and the following poetic meeting with Chico Buarque, who is featured on two pieces of the record, "Todo Sentiment" and "O Meu Guri" (the second a duet in Neapolitan). A translation paper, from Portuguese to Neapolitan, was created side-by-side with the authors, in particular with Chico, in order to preserve and keep intact the beauty, poetry, and musicality of the original texts made in the Neapolitan language. In this metamorphic vision, just like a deep dive into the Brazilian songwriting world, Neapolitan dances meet the Brazilian ones, the visionary samba of Tom Zè meets a Tammurriata and together frame the Chico Buarque masterpiece "Construção"; "Agua E Vinho" by Egberto Gismonti blends to "Voce Voce", a wonderful example of the great Neapolitan melodic tradition. Along with Maria Pia, there are great musicians and long-time companions, instrument virtuosos with a deep sense of interplay; bearers of intimacy and feeling which only the common and long-staging of stages allows: Welsh pianist Huw Warren, who has recorded two albums, Dialektos (2008) and 'O Pata Pata (2011),- with Maria Pia. The virtuoso clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi, with his classical and jazz style, has been linked for many years to Brazilian music and culture; The Brazilian guitarist Roberto Taufic, author of many arrangements and a musician of extraordinary sensibility; Roberto Rossi, a peculiarly creative and unconventional percussionist.

VALLE, MARCOS Vontade De Rever Voce LP
Restocked, originally released for RSD 2017 release. Marcos Valle is one of the few artists you cannot miss if you have the slightest interest in Brazilian music. Whether your taste is focused on bossa jazz, samba, psych folk or soul, Valle has surely recorded a great album for you. By the late '60s he had already put out enough quality records to secure a place within the top Brazilian songwriters of all time, but his career luckily did not stop there and he continued releasing amazing music over the following decades. He settled in Los Angeles in the mid-70s, tired of living under Brazil's military dictatorship, and started to collaborate with such talented artists as Leon Ware or Chicago. Vontade De Rever Você, released in 1981, is his first album after moving back to Brazil and shows all the music influences received during his US years, especially boogie, soul and funk, featuring stellar collaborators: Sivuca, Chicago's Peter Cetera, Robson Jorge, and even Azymuth's José Roberto Bertrami on the Rhodes. The opening track, "A Paraíba Não É Chicago", is Marcos Valle's own take on Leon Ware's "Baby Don't Stop Me", making clear that what he accomplished while in LA would now make its way into Brazil. This is an essential album for lovers of boogie. Listen to the irresistible groove of "Pecados De Amor" (Valle's own composition although previously recorded by Cristina Camargo) or "Velhos Surfistas Querendo Voar" and you will soon realize that this album is one of the most solid efforts in his entire discography. Even when the pace is kept mid-tempo, as on the closing tune "Não Pode Ser Qualquer Mulher", Valle's songs manage to shake the dancefloor with his very well achieved mix of Brazilian sounds and funky rhythms. This first ever vinyl reissue is presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

Watergate Records welcome back two of Hamburg's finest, Adana Twins, last seen on the label's latest various artists compilation (WG 037EP). "Ortus" takes a much more "up-beat" approach with dreamy arpeggios and shimmering atmospherics laid over a pulsing bassline. Sultry vocals and lush aural artifacts launch sensations to uncharted new heights on "Relentless" which features Jeppe Kjellberg. Andre Lodemann creates his revision of "Relentless".

VA Disco 2.0: Fever's Risin' Again CD
From Paris to Melbourne, Berlin or Athens, a new blend of '70s inspired disco sound is currently taking the dancefloors by storm with artists like Monika, L'Impératrice, or Leon X Leon creating a stir on the international scene. Paying their dues to the pure form of disco, these new artists, far from mimicking the clichés, are adding an unmistakable millennium twist to the genre. This is Disco 2.0. It's all down to a few men in New York with a love for Philly Soul and hypnotic grooves. In the early '70s, they defined the club culture from scratch: DJs David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, Larry Levan, and Frankie Knuckles, label bosses Mel Sheren and Neil Bogart, and remixer extraordinaire, Tom Moulton, were instrumental in shaping a new sound that changed music forever and paved the way for house music and its many sub-genres decades later. Today, a new scene is shaping up, updating the classic sound of disco. Young artists like Marvin & Guy in Italy, L'Imperatrice and Leon X Leon in France, or Monika in Athens and the US are producing a fresh blend of disco-inspired music which is neither a copy of the past glory, nor totally in line of the popular nu-disco genre that has flourished primarily in Northern Europe. The Wewantsounds crew has carefully selected here the cream of this new disco wave with the coolest tracks around and added a little nod to the heydays in the form of a rare 1976 instrumental by Sounds Of Inner City from the cult West End Records label and mixed by the legendary Tom Moulton. This tasteful selection will give you a fresh insight into the disco rebirth, pouring into the mix a huge dose of sensuality, rhythms and an irresistible craving for love. That's Disco 2.0! Features: L'Impératrice, Bon Voyage Organisation, Marvin & Guy, Monika, Juan MacLean, Joakim, Todd Terje, No Zu, Sounds Of Inner City, Leon X Leon, Tensnake, Tiger & Woods, Bufiman, and S3A.

MARLEY & THE WAILERS, BOB Lively Up Yourself: Roots Of A Revolution (1967-1971) CD
A superbly crafted Bob Marley set, compiled and annotated by French journalist Vincent Tarrière, chronicles the story behind this legendary article "The Wild Side of Paradise" published by Rolling Stone Magazine in 1973. Features a handpicked selection of Bob Marley's best songs, recorded at his creative peak, during the late '60s and early '70s, when he was working with producers Bunny Lee, Leslie Kong, and Lee Perry. 1973 was a turning point for Jamaican music. Perry Henzell's highly-acclaimed film The Harder They Come had come out the year before and Bob Marley had just signed with Island Records and was about to take the world by storm. In July 1973, Rolling Stone Magazine published "The Wild Side of Paradise", a major story about Jamaica and its vibrant musical scene written by Michael Thomas with striking photos by Arthur Gorson. The pair had travelled to the island to soak up the atmosphere and immerse themselves in the local music scene. There they met a 28 year old Marley who was about to tour Europe. "The Wild Side of Paradise" was a bold move for the magazine. Jamaican music was essentially unknown in the western world up to that point. "Revolution was in the air and, ten years into independence, Jamaica was on fire," remembers Gorson. Through connections with Island Records' Chris Blackwell, Thomas and Gorson managed to spend time with Marley and a series of iconic photos of the artist was taken by Gorson, one of which is on the cover of this album. "Wild Side" was the first major feature focusing on Jamaican music and would help put reggae on the international map. The article was also the seed of Thomas's book Babylon On A Thin Wire in collaboration with Adrian Boot (1976). In 1973, Bob Marley was indeed no newcomer on the Jamaican scene. He'd been active since the early '60s and had recorded some of his most creative output accompanied by his group, The Wailers. The music is fresh and undiluted, catchy and inspired, and shows Marley's genius at crafting beautiful melodies. The set features several of his early classics such as "Duppy Conqueror" and "Caution", as well as lesser-known gems such as "Wisdom" and "Long Long Winter", and songs that would find a second life on his Island albums, such as "Trench Town Rock" or "Concrete Jungle".

VA Inner Peace: Rare Spiritual Funk And Jazz Gems - The Supreme Sound Of Producer Bob Shad CD
Wewantsounds are back with a superb selection of spiritual jazz and funk grooves from legendary producer Bob Shad's Mainstream Records catalogue. Bob Shad was one of the greatest music producers of the 20th century, having worked with all the music giants, from Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to Sarah Vaughan, Lightnin' Hopkins, The Platters, and Janis Joplin to name just a few. "Bobby Shad was a legend in our family" says his grandson Judd Apatow who, together with his sister Mia, looks after Shad's back catalogue, Mainstream Records. Like his peers, jazz producers Creed Taylor and Bob Thiele, Shad went independent in the '60s, and by the early '70s, he was producing a string of superb albums mixing spiritual jazz with funk and soul. These albums are now being rediscovered by new generation of soul and jazz lovers hooked on the music of Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings. Recorded between 1971 and '73, the Fender-Rhodes-drenched tracks on Inner Peace showcase Shad's unique deep jazz sound. They feature such revered musicians as Harold Land, Roy Haynes, and Frank Foster, together with a younger generation of talented musicians led by Buddy Terry, Dave Hubbard, and LaMont Johnson. Here they are accompanied by the cream of '70s jazz session musicians including Bernard Purdie, Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson, James Mtume, Stanley Clarke, and Cecil Bridgewater. The Mainstream catalogue has been sampled by a long list of revered DJs and hip hop producers over the years. Roy Haynes's "Senyah" was sampled by De La Soul on "Pony Ride" and Shelly Manne's short outro "Infinity" forms the unmissable backbone of Jeru The Damaja's all-time hip hop classic, "Come Clean". A fitting tribute to the supreme sound of producer Bob Shad. Wewantsounds will start a reissue program of original Mainstream albums with bonus material and rare photos from the vaults. Also features: Charles Williams, Hadley Caliman, Pete Yellin, and Sonny Red.

NEGRO, JOEY Produced With Love 2CD
Produced With Love is an extraordinary album from UK legend Joey Negro: a buoyant, life-affirming, disco-inspired album. It's hard to find enough superlatives to describe just how influential and prolific Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, has been over the last three decades. One of music's major proponents of soulful, disco-tinged, vocal records, and without question instrumental music, is its development and popularization. No-one treats a loop, groove, or hook with as much care and attention as Joey Negro. Throughout his career, disco has been a key ingredient to his sound, and alongside the likes of Nile Rodgers, Daft Punk, Jamiroquai, and Dimitri From Paris, he's one of the few artists to have been keeping the disco fire burning. Produced With Love is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released, and the first for more than 20 years. And as the electronic music scene threatens to be overrun with bland and forgettable productions, Produced With Love proves that dance music with character still exists. And rather than rely on sampling older records, the overwhelming majority of music is newly recorded. Album opener "Prove That You're Feeling Me", featuring Diane Charlemagne, is without question one of the catchiest and most urgent disco recordings produced in the last decade. Evoking the great Nile Rogers and Chic at their funkiest, it trips along on an exquisite bassline with orchestral strings and Charlemagne's vocal lending the record a truly timeless quality. Joey Negro explains: "Unfortunately, between starting and finishing the project, the supremely talented Diane Charlemagne, the singer/songwriter who I co-wrote many songs with over last ten years, very sadly passed away. We had a great working relationship, which was both fun and honest. Most of my final collaborations with Diane, 'Overnight Sensation', 'Prove That You're Feeling Me' and the partly re-written remake of 'Must Be The Music' are on this album." R&B and house music mainstay Linda Clifford narrates on "Won't Let Go", a deep house cut that celebrates musical escapism, whilst "It's More Fun To Compute" -- an unlikely cover -- is a fully orchestrated disco rework of Dusseldorf's finest. Further highlights include an utterly transformed "Must Be The Music", whilst things get both dubby and jazzy on the Arthur Russell-evoking "Distorting Space Time". Also features: Sacha Williamson, Lifford, Angela Johnson, Horse Meat Disco, The Fatback Band, Melba Moore, The O'Jays, Alex Mills, Julian Crampton, Peven Everett, and Gwen Guthrie.
