DJRUM Mountains EP Pt. 1 12"
Repress. Originally released in August 2011. Resident Advisor on the 12", giving it a 4/5: "Djrum displays his dexterity via the EP's three-part title track, which crafts the same palette of samples, strings and gentle timbers into very different sonic terrains. 'Pt. 1' undulates along a steady 4/4 heartbeat that becomes slowly choked with chimes."

DJRUM Mountains EP Pt. 2 12"
Repress. Originally released in August 2011. Resident Advisor on the 12", giving it a 4/5: "Djrum displays his dexterity via the EP's three-part title track, which crafts the same palette of samples, strings and gentle timbers into very different sonic terrains. . . . "Pt. 2 & 3" is flexed over fluctuating tempos before lapsing into an aching reprise. Yet it's the floor-tapered "Turiya" that is the standout here, transforming all of Mountains' subtleties and dub techno cool into a warm and dusty swinger."

VA Nasi Hostia: Experimental Studio Bratislava Series 3 LP+CD
This series of electro acoustic music and musique concrète was started in 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Experimental Studio Bratislava, Exs. Series 1 (4MG 007LP, 2015) introduced its listeners to Iná Hudba and other music from the first generation of Slovak avant-garde composers recorded in the Exs, mostly with self-built electronic equipment behind the Iron Curtain. Series 2 (4MG 009LP, 2016) provided a platform for Nova Generacia, the new generation of Slovak composers using Western equipment -- now integrated in the "five year plan" to purchase in the West... -- and influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, and Pietro Grossi, among others. Series 3, titled Nasi Hostia, casts the recordings of visiting composers at the Exs, like György Ligeti, Lothar Voigtländer, Liviu Dandara, etc. The backbone to these unusual, landmark recordings were the highly esteemed Annual International Seminars on New Music in Smolenice, Slovakia. The first seminar, held in 1968, was and attended by Karlheinz Stockhausen -- playing his "Hymnen" for the first time abroad -- for the Slovak composers an ear-opener and a learning process on how "to make" this kind of "music"... In the following years new music personalities, like Ligeti, Mauricio Kagel, Lutoslawski, Gorecki, Sofia Gubajdulina, etc. attended the Smolenice Seminars. Unfortunately the partial opening of the Iron Curtain and the general cultural upsurge of the 1960s were frozen by tanks in 1968. Neo-Stalinistic "normalization" of the early 1970s violently pushed this -- and not only this -- creative branch beyond the borders of permitted cultural activities. This album offers the world premiere of: "Poème Symphonique for 100 Metronomes" by György Ligeti, performed and recorded in Smolenice Seminars, 1968 -- approved by the composer! Of particular interest is a student of Stockhausen and Ligeti: Romanian Liviu Dandara, with his outstanding electro acoustic composition "Affectus Memoria" that shows his artistic development after his studies in Darmstadt. The famous East German composer Lothar Voigtländer is presented here with his never released "Meditation Sur Le Temps", the almost forgotten Czech composer has here his "comeback" with the extraordinary "Speleofonie" -- just to name a few East European composers to discover from the analog past of the '70s. The seven recordings all date from 1968-1982, and also features compositions by: Milan Slavický, Georg Katzer, Lothar Voigtlaender, Zoltán Pongrácz, and Alois Pi?os. Includes CD with each track presented at full-length; Edition of 500 (numbered).

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Their Satanic Majesties Second Request 2LP
2017 repress, black vinyl. Gatefold 180 gram double vinyl version. Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Take It from the Man 2LP
2017 repress, black vinyl. Originally released on CD in 1996, now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's own record label. Released on 180 gram vinyl. The Brian Jonestown Massacre's obsession with the Rolling Stones continues unabated on the brilliant Take It from the Man!; where the group resurrected psychedelic-era excesses on the previous Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, here they jump further back in time to the Stones' mid-'60s period, with even more superlative results. From the opening "Vacuum Boots" onward, Take It from the Man! is gritty, swaggering R&B-influenced rock, delivered with remarkable assurance and attitude; singer Anton Newcombe is half-madman and half-shaman, and he commands each delirious moment with absolute mastery, emerging not so much a disciple of Mick Jagger but as a serious threat to the throne.

PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE Arpeggiated Bosendorfer + Falsetto Voice LP
In 1974, Ileana Sonnabend commissioned Charlemagne Palestine to create a limited edition, double LP in conjunction with a performance to celebrate the opening of her new Soho gallery at 420 West Broadway. Charlemagne made several recording attempts, first at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where they had a Bösendorfer Imperial Piano in their theater. He recorded "Bösendorfer + Voice", "Voice Piece" as well as some Bösendorfer tests, with Mayo Thompson as producer and Kurt Munkacsi as sound engineer. These ecstatic Swarthmore recordings, recorded late at night in the big empty theater space, represented the original elements on which Charlemagne Palestine later created the piano pieces for Four Manifestations on Six Elements (ALGAMARS 004LP, MAGNE 008LP). For more than 40 years since these recordings were made, Palestine never went back to listen to them, but recently on re-listening to these Swarthmore recordings with Alga Marghen, he found several blissful, arpeggiated piano and falsetto voice studies which he feels now deserve to be heard. Included in the Alga Marghen VocSon series, this LP of two previously unreleased 1974 recordings finally see the light of day. Edition of 405.

ANDROMEDA MEGA EXPRESS ORCHESTRA Vula CD
Berlin's Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra returns with its fourth album Vula. Having celebrated their ten-year anniversary with a stunning series of concerts in 2016, the 18-piece's new full-length showcases a stronger focus on harmony and melody -- and yet AMEO sound no less explosive or unpredictable than before. It arrives gently, with shimmering lights, soft winds, sashaying melodies, and of course, the isotherms and isotheres function just as they should: All of a sudden, lighting strikes amid the concord of instruments, unforeseen energies erupt and upset the rhythmic scenery. Making a combined effort to create sheltering patches of harmony within the unfolding drama, leader Daniel Glatzel and his 18-piece "working band" set out to harness album number four: Vula. Another musical tour de force that connects too many dots, decades, traditions and genres to mention, Vula is quite a different beast compared to its live predecessor or the orchestra's last studio effort Bum Bum (N 029CD/LP, 2012): There's bigger, bolder strokes, and the compositions are linked by recurring motifs and harmonies, which is why the new album sounds like one entity: It is one hour-long adventure that needs to be listened to in full. The title Vula, taken from the Tumbuka language (spoken in the northern region of Malawi), indeed translates to tempest or thunderstorm. Ranging from softly trickling melodies courtesy of older masters ("Lakta Mata Ha") and hazy interludes, the mood, vibe, and pace change faster than cloud formations come flying across the screens nowadays (e.g. "Qwetoipntv Vjadfklvjieop" with its arrangement a` la H. Lachenmann). Head-nod bliss, motion picture soundtrack vibes, and even J.B. licks aren't mutually exclusive in these compositions, as AMEO showcase with "J Schleia", a track that nods both to Dilla/Grandmaster Flash and to Bach-era counterpoint techniques. Elsewhere, a pounding surf-rock beat metamorphoses over the course of 14 minutes ("In The Light Of Turmoil"), only to see them return to patches that are surprisingly catchy and calm. The final applause turns out just as thunderous though, after the album ends with the vibrant and throbbing "Papaya Flyers IX Epsylon", a live recording that already foreshadows the group's later collaboration with Hermeto Pascoal. The entire process, from writing to intricate post-production, took almost five years.

PRAYER Seeing 12"
An artist dedicated to pushing the boundaries between the classical and electronic worlds, Prayer is a producer and composer who has impressed both ends of the spectrum. After dropping Lost (2017), aimed at giving classical music a more accessible angle, Prayer's Seeing is a darker, club-orientated four-tracker. In his words: "Seeing again explores relationships between two different areas of music; pushing for the diversification of classical music. Although more aggressive and instant than my previous work, it still fully compositional in its nature. The aim was to contrast harmony with brash rhythm, balancing perceived elegance and the abrasive."

TELAIO MAGNETICO Live 75 LP
Black Sweat Records present an expanded reissue of Telaio Magnetico's Live 75, including unreleased tracks from the super group's only tour in 1975. Telaio Magnetico was composed of Franco Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Juri Camisasca, Mino Di Martino, Roberto Mazza, and Terra Di Benedetto. In the mid '70s, the Italian underground scene seemed to mature an existential priority of yearning toward a new psychological universe, with a firm idea to colonize an uncharted space of a necessary and infinite path of spiritual redemption. In this context, the short experience of Telaio Magnetico was born from the confluence of the Battiato's experimental efforts, in works such as Sulle Corde Di Aries (1973), Clic (1974), and M.elle Le "Gladiator" (1975), and the Albergo Intergalattico Spaziale's new esoteric electronics. A mosaic of metamorphic sounds and frequencies of unfamiliar constellations, the music of Telaio is an imaginary trimurti of "energy-cosmos-mind". Synths and Lowrey organs draw sidereal labyrinths and landscapes, scanned to infinity by a harmonic percussions arsenal. Whispering and radical improved vocals are lost as delusional fugues in centrifugal vortices and, at the same time, seem to offer a compendium of religious chants which evoke Tibetan choruses, Indian pujas or the Gregorian tradition. Reemerging sometimes as Sufi cadences and relaxations, or pastoral-tribal elements on which the chamber carpet of oboe blows like Arabs, Egyptians, or Moroccans pifferos. That traced is not only a galactic river, but also a Mediterranean circumnavigation: a unique creative moment that, in addition to the references with the German kosmische music and British space-rock, seems to be perfumed by the influence of Gurdjieffian mystic and even had roots in the minimalist drones of Terry Riley and La Monte Young, also drawing parallels to the contemporary research of authors such as Alvin Curran and the following explorations of Futuro Antico.

DSR LINES Spoel 2LP
Black Sweat Records present a vinyl issue of DSR Lines' Spoel, which appeared only on cassette in 2014. This new double LP edition features three unreleased tracks. David Edren's organic minimal electronics are never majestic or magniloquent (like Schulze or Froese), and never neurotic or aggressive for that matter. It is a soft music, delineating echoes of sacred geometry in the emotional balance between oscillations, frequency modulations, and rhythmic pulsations. Diamonds, mineral combinations, emerald luminescence, hydrogen cascades, and stratospheric colors, like on Jupiter and Saturn... a dance of asteroids and meteorites in orbit, and satellites of silent harmonies. But Spoel is not just a departure to the unknown space. It's more of an attempt to create a miniature description of another macrobiotic life of "unfolding planets," which is first interior, then exterior. A refined touch with an array of analog instruments creates small sketches of cellular symphony, like in an anatomical trip of hidden micro-bodies, listening to blood streams, vibrational motions of Prana, muscle strings, or air passages. The general tone has little in common with the "oriental void", but there is an evident desire for quiet as a prelude to the Satori. All this makes Spoel a great micro-tonal investigation work and connects Edren with great visionaries such as Micheal Hoenig, JD Emmanuel, or Tonto's Expanding Head Band.

FONEMI Cosmopolis 12"
Fonemi present Cosmopolis, a work inspired by Don DeLillo's novel Cosmopolis (2003), a book that tells of a modern odyssey along the streets of a great metropolis. "Cosmopolis": a tribal and primitive dance, a propitiatory rite that has been handed down unchanged over the centuries. "Fiori Carnivore": what you do not expect, the flower, a symbol of delicacy and sensitivity that turns into an inexorable predator. "Verso Casa": the return from a long journey, the lights that illuminate the asphalt and the distant flashes of unidentified cities. "Tra Le Rovine": an ancient song, a prayer that exorcises a universal omen.

BOOKA SHADE Loneliest Boy/Just Like Tonight 12"
The third and final single from Booka Shade's Galvany Street album with Craig Walker (BFMB 033CD/LP/DLX-CD) is rather special and contains undoubtedly the most obvious pop hit of the album. "Loneliest Boy" is often described as Pet Shop Boys meets Booka Shade. The previously unreleased single and extended versions are quite different from the album version. One highlights the pop qualities and gets straight to the point, the other keeps the dancefloor in mind. The previously unreleased "Just Like Tonight" could compete with the best moments of New Order. It is easily one of Booka Shade's catchiest tunes.

NAUMAN, BRUCE Soundtrack From First Violin Film LP
Blume present a reissue of Bruce Nauman's Soundtrack From First Violin Film, originally released in 1969. Since the mid-1960s, Nauman has laid the groundwork -- in thought, context, practice, and materiality -- for nearly every fine-artist that has followed in his wake. Even those who do not directly draw on the ground he gained, must contended with a world in his image. Initially issued by Tanglewood Press in 1969 -- a component of the art multiples edition 7 Objects/69 (also including David Bradshaw, Eva Hesse, Stephen Kaltenbach, Alan Saret, Richard Serra, and Keith Sonnier) -- Soundtrack From First Violin Film is a crucial element in Nauman's diverse the canon of contributions; It bridges the emerging practices of performance, video, and sound. Blume's release -- along with the Die Schachtel's 2016 reissue (DSART 013LP) -- marks the first time this seminal work has been available to a broader audience, making it a historic event. Soundtrack From First Violin Film, while resembling music, is one of the earliest gestures of sound art as it has come to be understood. It falls within Nauman's larger body of solitary actions and performances. In 1968, the artist moved briefly to New York, occupying Jasper Johns's then vacant studio in the Hamptons, beginning to build the body of work for his first solo show at Leo Castelli Gallery, documenting them in what became the very first works of video art. Within the larger body of effort, emerged a series of works featuring him playing the violin. It is from this world, that the LP Soundtrack From First Violin Film, with its disembodied sounds, grew. Nauman's violin works, as they exist in the world, are only distant cousins of performance and compositions. They are objects, doubling the signifiers of music and the body back upon themselves. Rather seeking entirely new and liberated sonic realms, they employ conceptual practice, instrument, and rhythm to strike direct confrontation. They could be understood as a conceptual inversion of recordings by John Cage or of musique concrète. Rather than seeking to utilize non-instrumental sources to create music, Nauman used instrumental sounds and references to make something which is not music at all, highlighting the dimensional possibilities of meaning, and the elasticity of language. Comes in full-color cover with printed inner sleeve housing a Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve; Includes an original insert that functions as Obi; Yellow-colored vinyl; Edition of 300.

BUTCHER, JOHN Resonant Spaces LP
Blume present the first vinyl issue of John Butcher's Resonant Spaces, originally released on CD in 2008. More than a half century into its development, free improvisation remains nearly impossible to define. Of course there are concrete definitions, canons, and well-trod paths -- familiar idioms, structures, relationships, textures, and tones, but by its very nature -- something free, when practiced with faith, it is elusive, constantly shifting, and reforming in the hands of those who call the art form their own. Of the improvisers emerging from the remarkable European contexts over the last four decades, few demand the respect, or have plumbed the depths of the English saxophonist John Butcher. An entirely singular voice, since appearing on the scene during the late 1970s and early '80s, Butcher has continuously defied and shattered standing presumptions of his form. Exemplifying this, there may be no better example than a series of solo performances recorded on a lonely tour of remote areas of Scotland with Akio Susuki during 2006. Entitled Resonant Spaces, the album stands as one of his most ambitious, radical, and revelatory bodies of work. Across the '80s and '90s, he performed with the lion's share of Britain's leading lights: Derek Bailey, Phil Minton, John Russell, Phil Durrant, Steve Beresford, and countless others. It was during this period that he began to develop the trajectories for which he is often most recognized: solo performances, capitalizing on resonance, overtone, and space. Resonant Spaces is the fruit born of decades of work; a rare product of artistry, seeming to have simply appeared -- an organic disembodied form. Astounding on nearly every count -- miles from the social unrest from which this idiom was born -- an uncharted meditative realm -- a towering body of creativity and tone. Recorded in the wilds of Scotland against Neolithic standing stones, within an emptied oil storage tank, and caves, like all free improvisations, Resonant Spaces is a conversation, but one unlike others before. Where musicians working in ensembles and groups, shift, adapt, and respond to those with whom they share the stage, Butcher's conversation is with the unexpected responses of a given space and the returned transmogrified body of his creative self. A shimmering world of resonance, ambience, structure, and craft. Comes in full-color cover with printed inner sleeve housing a Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve; Includes original insert that functions as Obi; Blue-colored vinyl; Edition of 250.

CARDOPUSHER New Cult Fear 2LP
Venezuela born, Barcelona based Cardopusher's career goes back over 12 years -- the proverbial 10,000 hours to master a skill long fulfilled. New Cult Fear, on Boysnoize Records, proves it through disciplined, focused craftsmanship. It's the type of no-frills production that deceives the amateur listener with its simplicity, while the seasoned listener knows that the simpler the elements, the harder it is to make a track that moves the dancefloor. Moving dancefloors it does, although there are few smiles to be had. This is music for dark rooms, for Nitzer Ebb's famous pairing of "muscle and hate". This is being electrocuted by a broken TB-303 -- only you find the feeling erotic, your exclamations recorded on a haunted reel-to-reel. And it's never sounded so good. The 11 tracks of the LP sit squarely in "the zone", that time in the club when time itself has stopped, when mind turns off and body takes control. Menacing acid lines, jacking bass, and harsh, reductionist production build the backbone to fragmented Latin percussion and vocals (including a feature by Miami's Cuban/German Otto Von Shirach), which nod to Cardopusher's South American roots and lend a sense of exoticism to its otherwise Detroit rooted aesthetic. This sense of geographic and temporal disconnection/reconnection permeates the LP; this is Detroit techno and Chicago acid, broken, fragmented, sent through antiquated and illegal P2P networks to Venezuela, burnt to CDr and snail-mailed to a Barcelona basement rave, recorded live, then blasted wide open in fractal bits over a global electronic network and reassembled here-and-now in a darkly crystalline execution. As the title New Cult Fear suggests, this is less the stuff of dreams and more-so of a paranoid nightmare. But let your body take control, and nightmares never sounded so good.

CHERRY, DON Music, Wisdom, Love 1969 LP
Repressed. Reaching a near-mythical status amongst fans of free jazz's most worldly intrepid explorer, these seldom heard Paris soundtrack sessions known as Music, Wisdom, Love have evaded collectors' grasps and confused historians for exactly 50 years. Instigated in Paris in 1967 and filmed during Don Cherry's downtime on a visit to the Chat qui Pêche nightclub in March 1967, where he played with Karl Berger, Henri Texier, and Jacques Thollot, the bulk of this cinematic portrait was filmed on the streets of Paris under the direction of creative all-rounders Jean-Noël Delamarre and Nathalie Perrey, who, as their careers bloomed, would become pivotal figures in underground French cinema - straddling La Nouvelle Vague, adult entertainment, and cinema fantastique in what can only be described as speedball cinema. As the supportive creative family that primarily played home to French vampire/horrortica director Jean Rollin, both Nathalie and Jean-Noël, his brother Jean-Philippe Delamarre and a small team of other fans of oblique media would be responsible for a vibrant micro-culture that awkwardly flourished on the outskirts on the Parisian new wave - combining comic book culture, Lettrism, sexual liberation, psychedelic rock, graphic design, and, with this record as prime example, free jazz and avant-garde music. What previously might have been regarded as an unlikely coupling, with the benefit of half a century of archival hindsight, this release documents the essential cosmic collision of two fantastic planets. Available here for the first time ever and licensed from producer and director Jean-Noël Delamarre himself.

SIREN Lulu 12"
Devi Mambouka gives voice to Lulu in the song and inhabits the heroine's indifference to bourgeois convention with graceful and sensual defiance. The lyrics herald transformations and builds on the ideas of Siren's previous songs. In the barren context of contemporary dance music, which seems indifferent to the ideas of art and philosophy, Siren draws inspiration from lyricists like David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, and writers like John Ashbery and William Burroughs. Lulu's sleek production and affecting rhythms evoke a journey taken, nocturnal and urgent. Includes a remix by Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi. Cover art by Erik Foss.

HOOKER, JOHN LEE The Country Blues Of John Lee Hooker LP
Cornbread Records present a reissue of The Country Blues Of John Lee Hooker, originally released in 1959. By 1959 the folk revival was nearly in full swing, pushed forward by the likes of Pete Seeger, and it was in fact the first year of the Newport Folk Festival. In that light, John Lee Hooker took a break from his Chicago electric blues recording career and returned to his country blues roots with an acoustic blues LP that featured the stripped-down sound of just Hooker and his acoustic guitar. Essential acoustic blues. Reissued here on 180 gram LP; Includes download code.

BRUGNOLINI, SANDRO Gli Arcangeli LP
Dagored present the first vinyl reissue of Sandro Brugnolini's Gli Arcangeli, originally released in 1964. Italian composer and alto sax player Alessandro Brugnolini -- composer behind 1970's Overground (CNPL 801LP) and L'Uomo Dagli Occhiali A Specchio (1975) -- launched his career playing in the super jazz band inspired by Miles Davis, The Modern Jazz Gang. Later, he became very prolific as a composer and performer under his own name, as well as under pseudonyms (such as Narassa). One of the first pure jazz soundtracks for film belongs to him: it was 1963 and the movie was Enzo Battaglia's Gli Arcangeli. Featuring the legendary American singer Helen Merrill, here it is, one of the all-time rarest Italian jazz LPs. Includes two bonus tracks. Color vinyl; Edition of 500.

GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA Azioni/Reazioni 1967-1969 (Deluxe Box Set) 5LP BOX/4CD/DVD
Deluxe box set version. Includes five LPs, four CDs, DVD, a large poster, and book; Comes in a handmade wooden boxset with rubber and felt motif; One-time pressing of 100. The year 2007 saw one of the most remarkable findings in the long treasure-hunting history of Die Schachtel: the complete set of recordings of the early manifestation (1967-1969) of one of the most legendary improv group of all time, the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Rescued by the private archives of Walter Branchi, one of the original founding members -- alongside Franco Evangelisti, Ennio Morricone, Ivan Vandor, Roland Kayn, Egisto Macchi, Mario Bertoncini, and John Heineman -- the tapes were then restored in their entirety. Only a part of them were published in a CD-only boxset in an edition of 500, titled Azioni 1967-1969, which also featured a DVD with the original film Nuova Consonanza shot by Theo Gallher during the rehearsal and concert that the group held on March 19th and 20th, 1967, at the Galleria d'arte Moderna in Rome. Spanning from free-jazz to total abstract noise to wild electronic sounds, their music was -- and remains -- one of the most dynamic, original, and uncompromising expression of a period defined by intense experimentation and musical bravery, anticipating experiments to come in years following. Or, to put it simple, "They were utterly unique," as per the words that John Zorn, who expressively wrote for this edition. To mark the ten-year anniversary of its original release, Die Schachtel present Azioni/Reazioni 1967-1969, the complete cycle of improvisations -- which includes thirteen additional, never before published pieces -- taken from the original tapes. Remastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.Available in three versions. All versions include a 64-page, sewn-bound, LP-size book in English and Italian, complete with essays, memories shared by the group, a new article by Valentina Bertolani exploring in detail the techniques of the group, a chronology, a collection of original reviews by Maurizio Farina, and a set of unpublished black-and-white photos of the group playing in Venice's Teatro Della Fenice in 1968, taken from the archives of the Venice Biennale. All versions also include a DVD (PAL 5.1 audio - region free) with the original film Nuova Consonanza shot by Theo Gallher.

Part 1 has an earthy, worldly feel to it. From the Swahili sung harmonies on Mim Suleiman's "Pole Pole", to the Afro influences of Swiss collective Alma Negra's "Onga", both tracks work raw percussion with just enough swing. Istanbul's Kerem Akdag provides the jazz-tinted, deep roller "Getdownsoclose", making use of lush pads and rushing snares. Maryland's James Tillman closes with soulful vocals on "Wander", which sit gracefully over transcendental keys and compellingly loose drumming.

Lady Blacktronika offers a timeless, tripped-out house classic with "Can We Still Be Friends?". SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE Transmissions 4LP BOX
A four-record anthology of Soundwalk Collective. Hertzian frequencies, radio interceptions, fragments of voices, singing sands, shortwave transmissions, archival recordings, vanished worlds, chaotic harmonies, daunting moments of confusion, an audible entropy, elation, and an endless search for beauty into chaos. The box set gathers four previously unreleased studio compositions by the New York and Berlin-based group of artists-musicians: Ulysses Syndrome, Medea, Empty Quarter, and Bessarabia, and a booklet including "Black-Winged Night", an essay by musician and writer David Toop, and a conversation between Soundwalk Collective and Dischi Fantom founder, Massimo Torrigiani. The four compositions -- mastered by Stefan Betke -- are the result of extensive journeys and field recordings in the Mediterranean basin, the Black Sea, the Rub' al Khali Desert, and the region around Odessa, once known as Bessarabia. An international genre-bending group of artists-musicians with studios in New York City and Berlin, the three members of Soundwalk Collective (Stephan Crasneanscki, Simone Merli, and Kamran Sadeghi) bound in Manhattan to produce concept albums, sound installations, and live performances, often in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and writers. Selected tracks from Transmissions are being broadcast internationally as part of Every Time A Ear Di Soun, the radio program of documenta14, curated by Adam Szymiczyk. The program includes a headphone installation in the Press and Information Centre in Kassel, designed by Aristide Antonas, and in the ASFA Library in Athens. An excerpt from the included essay by David Toop: "I hear this displacement of refrains. I am not fixed within signs but adrift within signals. Like a bat or a dolphin, I hear scanned frequencies otherwise inaudible to my human limitations and these voices and tones captured from the aether seem to me to?be our equivalent of those voices of gods who spoke 'words that flew'; music asserts its regional and cultural affiliations and yet at the same time it drifts unmoored?in the ocean of sound." Graphic design by Fabrizio Radaelli; Photography by Stephan Crasneanscki; Printed and assembled in Italy by Grafiche Antiga. Record pressing: Optimal Media, Germany; Mastering by Stefan Betke at ~Scape Mastering, Berlin; 160 gram vinyl; Edition of 300.

REGIS Gymnastics (21st Anniversary Edition) 2LP
For the 21st anniversary of Regis's pivotal debut album, the Brum techno overlord has remade the scene of the crime from original stems and salvaged 8-track tapes. The unyielding results effectively present a doctored version of his seminal -- some may say game-changing -- record, featuring new studio versions and unreleased sequences. It's basically a stronger, fitter version of his most prized LP, loaded with sounds as brutally functional as the city which birthed them. Originally recorded in September 1996 in Room 406, Digbeth, Birmingham aka Scorn's studio -- sandwiched between Tony De Vit and Broadcast's recording spaces -- Regis used one drum machine, one synth, and one FX unit to nail home a back-to-basics approach to techno; one inspired as much by the direct immediacy of Chicago house as the febrile DJ sets of Jeff Mills, but also drawing a crucial "X factor" from his background as a bit of a hooligan, with form in a number of post-industrial, EBM, and punk units. When Gymnastics first hit the 'floor, it was considered shocking anathema to the swell of manicured, proggy arrangements which were by then dominating the spotlight of British dance in clubs and the media. It was loopy, stripped-to-the-bone, and shark-eyed, always moving forward and without the faintest recourse to melody or harmony -- simply reveling in the gnashing tension and swerve of raw, clattering drum machines, and monophonic synth jabs. Big Beat or trance it fucking well wasn't. 21 years later its lip-biting force is now felt stronger than ever. From the grumbling refusal of "We Said No" and the austere wall-banger "Allies" that boot off the album, through the 16th note nag of "Translation" to the rictus jag of "Sand" and the metallic bite of "The Black Freighter", this is timeless, primal dance music that still causes friction wherever it's deployed. James Brown is dead. Long live Regis. New reworked artwork (original featured the Twin Towers photographed in 1996). Remastered and cut by Matt Colton.

MALHEIROS, SABRINA Clareia LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Having made her mark on Brazil's rich musical legacy with three best-selling albums to date, Rio's original nu-bossa queen returns with a tour de force of golden-era Brazilian soul music. From the spiritual swing of the early pioneers of modern samba, to the dizzying hedonism of Brazil's eighties disco/boogie craze, Clareia is a life-affirming journey through the rich and varied sounds of Sabrina Malheiros. For her most up-lifting and danceable album to date, Sabrina has (as always) enlisted her father Alex Malheiros -- bassist of samba jazz-funk legends Azymuth -- and visionary London based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom), son of Incognito's Bluey. With her debut album Equilibria (2005), Sabrina arrived on a wave of instant acclaim. Sabrina's innovative nu-bossa sound would continue on her sophomore album 2008's New Morning (FARO 131CD), declared the "best album of summer 2008" by Evening Standard, before 2011's Dreaming (FARO 161CD/LP). Six years on, Sabrina returns with Clareia. "It means to clear, light, brighten or illuminate, which, after seeing Brazil and the rest of the world go through some very difficult times, is exactly what the writing of this album brought to my life." Packed out with high-octane swinging samba-soul, like the title-track and "Salve O Mar", the album also features some bottom-heavy Brazilian boogie cuts, like rejoicing album opener "Celebrar" which harks back to some of Marcos Valle's cult '80s disco output, and "Sol Ceu E Mar", a Tania Maria-esque future classic of scorching Latin-funk. Mellower moments are found in "Em Paz", on which Sabrina's beguiling harmonies find an anchor in the rhythmic acoustic guitar of Ze Carlos', who Sabrina heralds as being "the best guitarist I have ever worked with". Azymuth's keyboardist Kiko Continentino's deft Rhodes, piano, organ, and synth playing, add ever more textures of distinctly Brazilian brilliance throughout, while tropical brass and flute arrangements on cool bossa-jazz movers "Vai Maria" and "Sandore", come from Brazilian saxophone legend Leo Gandleman, a man who has worked with everyone from Gal Costa to Gilberto Gil. The rhythm section combines Daniel Maunick's seamless drum programming and the organic polyrhythms of Brazilian percussion legend Jakare, all punctuated by Alex Malheiros's inimitable (occasionally slapped) jazz-funk bass, giving the album its irresistibly danceable pulse. Clareia is an inter-generational masterclass of Brazil's soulful spectrum, led by a pioneering voice of today's scene on the very top of her game.

He studied art in Milan, before becoming involved in experimental music and since 2002 he's been in collaboration with a wide range of artists, currently residing in Berlin, Germany. His new album Ore is released on the new UK record label Float which was founded by Sofia Ilyas, who was previously the label manager at Erased Tapes Records. The new label exists parallel to Float PR, the London based agency dedicated to the promotion of unique artists and projects, and Andrea Belfi is the first signing. Titled Ore, the album places the drums as its centerpiece, while textures are embellished and mutated through electronic manipulations and dark, eerie sonic details. Over the years, Belfi has built a sound-world that artfully combines a modest drum set-up with an equally concise electronics component. He has searched long to produce and refine the acoustic timbres of his music, but has now reached a certain point of fulfilment, courtesy of his Saari drum-kit from Finland. Melded seamlessly with the acoustic elements are a Nord modular and sampler. On Ore, Belfi attains a masterful synthesis of these two sonic realms. Belfi has gained a reputation for his energetic and charismatic performances, both as a solo musician and within numerous collaborations. 2016 saw him tour with Nonkeen, the German three-piece band headed by Nils Frahm. Belfi became an instant highlight following a sold-out gig at London's Barbican Centre, lighting the stage with an impressive and explosive drum solo that became one of the most memorable moments from the evening. "When I started the record I really wanted to find something very direct. I was looking for something very raw, something sonically and acoustically complex. The title Ore actually was suggested by my wife. I had to look up the meaning and loved the concept -- something raw that you can extract, and the refinement into a precious material. It's a very simple metaphor but there's a lot there, you can just put that word out and you don't have to explain too much. You give an input to the listener, and just leave it to the imagination." BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS Ghetto Music: The Blueprint Of Hip Hop LP
"Amongst hip-hop fans, Boogie Down Productions' first two albums -- Criminal Minded (1987) and By All Means Necessary (1988) -- both loom very large. And for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. That being said, too many people sleep on BDP's third LP, Ghetto Music. Released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the group's first two. As on By All Means Necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and DJ Scott LaRock, KRS-One pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. Musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his 'Edutainment' syllabus. Lyrically there was never a question about KRS' power, and on Ghetto Music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. Clear cases in point are two of the album's singles, 'You Must Learn' and 'Why Is That?' but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece 'Who Protects Us From You' (still sadly relevant in 2017), 'Ghetto Music' and 'World Peace.' Still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era."

WESLEY & THE J.B.'S, FRED Breakin' Bread LP
2017 repress. "'So many times we refuse to go back and break bread with our parents, relatives and old friends... Times are tough, the economy is rough, everybody's tryin' to make a dollar. Sometimes you get away from yourself. Won't you go back and break bread, while we still have some to break?' So implored James Brown, Fred Wesley and even album engineer Bob Both, on the back cover liners of the 1974 soul classic Breakin' Bread. Times were indeed tough for everyday folks in the waning days of the Nixon era. Escape-ism was needed. Humanity sometimes seemed to be in short supply. But James Brown and his assembled People Records roster were always there to take soul music fans away from their everyday trials and tribulations, even while occasionally funking up negative situations (for instance, 'Rockin' Funky Watergate,' one of the centerpieces of this album). The heavy grooves laid down by trombonist and bandleader Fred Wesley, saxophonist and arranger St. Clair Pinckney and Fred's assembled 'New J.B.'s' were, almost literally, comfort for the ears. 1974 saw a vortex of superfunk coming out of James Brown's People Records stable, and this platter wasn't even the only J.B.'s album that year (see also: Damn Right, I Am Somebody, also reissued by Get On Down). But it is one that added to the powerful musical and social legacy of that crew. It's an air-tight, eight course meal, with most platters clocking in at four delicious minutes each. Breakin' Bread is a truly memorable funk stew, with warm, call-and-response vocals, complicated-but-laidback soul, and an important message ? alluded to in the back cover plea. 'I Wanna Get Down,' 'Rice 'N' Ribs' and 'Funky Music Is My Style' all feature intricate, infectious grooves. In fact, there isn't much time to catch your breath on Breakin' Bread, and that's a beautiful thing. Reissued on LP with a sumptuous, five-color, 22" x 22" poster of the cover art, all wrapped in a Stoughton Tip-On jacket and thick polybag, there is never a bad time to revisit this classic (maybe replacing your worn-out original copy). Or, just as importantly, let it blow your mind for the first time."

TOOTS & THE MAYTALS In The Dark LP
Repressed. "Toots & The Maytals' long and storied musical career spans all the way back to the dawn of ska. The group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. In The Dark is the group's second internationally released full length, the follow up to Funky Kingston. Like Funky Kingston, this release is in the pantheon of the greatest reggae albums of all time. Sure, that's not an official list, but you know it when you hear it. In addition to stand out cuts like the James Brown influenced '54-46 Was My Number' that had previously been issued as singles the group recorded all new material at Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston. One of those cuts is perhaps the most unique reggae covers of an American hit record. Reggae already had a storied history of Jamaican artist covering American R&B hits. But Toots & The Maytals went where others hadn't with a cover of John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads.' If you're only familiar with the original, well let's just say Toots Hibbert's beyond soulful vocals may make you forget you ever heard that other version of the song. Reissued in a lovingly re-printed version of the original LP sleeve, Get On Down now presents a superb reissue of a legendary piece of music history."

Recorded before their first album came out (1967), this record features three primeval versions of tunes from their debut record and eight goodies, standards and originals, that were not featured on any official studio and live recording up to 1970's Workingman's Dead. This recording brings you right there, on a magic night in November 1966, when psychedelic rock was still something fresh and exciting and the emerging hippie movement had not exploded yet. That came half a year later with the invasion of Haight-Ashbury. But these recordings are not only of historical importance, their musical value is amazing. The band smokes on stage throughout the performance. The sound is muggy for sure, but each instrument comes through as it should and the simmering duels of guitar and organ make your head swirl. This album will certainly make the young generation of '60s music aficionados go crazy. A new beautiful cover artwork and great overall sound quality restoration make this album a joyful experience. And be sure that something like this 17+ minute version of "In The Midnight Hour" will have rarely hit your turntable. The overall atmosphere is just haunting. Even their official Live/Dead album (1969) doesn't reach this intensity. The release is reminiscent of early Doors or Iron Butterfly live recordings. A band at it's prime with the world to gain and nothing to lose.

CENTURIONS, THE Bullwinkle Part II: Surfers' Pajama Party Recorded Live On The U.C.L.A. Campus LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of The Centurions's Surfers' Pajama Party Recorded Live On The U.C.L.A. Campus, originally released in 1963. Few acts have a cult reputation such as The Centurians, or The Centurions as they were originally called. In 1967, they changed their name to The Centurians for legal reasons. The main point of interest though is this set of killer tunes. Original pressings fetch prices of $200, and due to their appearance in Pulp Fiction (1994), this band has gained a cult following of younger people who have kept their legacy alive, even bringing them to reunite for a second career. The Centurians are definitely a Californian band. But they seem to come from the darker, windier, and dirtier part of the beach, where only overly tattooed bikers get their willing victims laid and the rough sea craves for the lives of daring surf maniacs. The music is surf rock'n'roll, but it's different to most of the fluffy good time party bands. The bass guitar plays a mean line with all the tunes to give 'em a bent-out-of-shape spine, at which the beats of the drum, the desperately howling saxophone, and the gloomy twangy guitar, get tightened with rusty wire. The performance presented here is excellent. The musicians belong to the best of their genre. The atmosphere is just utterly mysterious, dark, and dusty, and the steaming hot melodies and the fuzzed-out bass and saxophone lines will have you grasping for air. The most popular tracks here are the ones that appeared on Pulp Fiction, "Bullwinkle Pt. II" and "Comanche", which is a famous tune from back in the day (the Pulp Fiction OST features a ravaging version by The Revels). The whole record has this desperate expression, a hunger for life, and a love young fellows from the darker side of town had back then, and still have. A long overdue proper reissue of a long-lost classic. Includes six bonus tracks.

SAKAMOTO, KYU Sukiyaki And Other Japanese Hits LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of Kyu Sakamoto's Sukiyaki And Other Japanese Hits, originally released in 1962. If you are curious how Japanese pop music sounded in the early '60s, here is one of the most popular examples. This reissue will hopefully intrigue fans of abundantly orchestrated '60s pop to listen to Kyu Sakamoto, who sadly perished in an aircraft accident in 1985, one of the biggest events of its kind in flight history. What do you hear from this very young but already experienced man? Mysterious, soulful songs with big orchestral arrangements, tunes that show elements of Latin music, such as bossa nova, typically elegant doo wop, and pop ballads of the day with heartwarming melodies, some exotic tunes that draw influence from what western people might consider Japanese music, real or fictional. The most popular tune that became a worldwide hit is "Sukiyaki", which later received great success with the German language version by The Blue Diamonds, a Dutch band of Indonesian origin. Sakamoto did not spare any style popular in the '50s up to the early '60s. You'll hear elements of chanson among many others. The whole album is relaxed and beautiful, and is executed with a friendly expression. The orchestra, the big band, whoever accompanies Kyu Sakamoto, dresses all the compositions with passionate and pliable garment of absolute elegance. This album definitely is certainly joyous. The use of Japanese language, which might appeal to native speakers and those with a fondness for exotic aspects, makes this record even more outstanding. It's a colorful and memorable effort.

Squadra Omega teams up again revealing itself in the shape of a trio composed of -- exactly as for the session which gave birth to Il Serpente Nel Cielo (2015) -- OmegaFrank (drums), OmegaG8 (bass, electronics), and OmegaMatt (guitar, organ, sax, electronics). An improvised session recorded live by Matt Bordin at Outside Inside Studio, where the Squadra goes nervously free -- constantly suspended and harmonically non resolved -- following a trail of skilled atonal jazz rock guitar tunes leading to moments of dazed electronics. Definitely not an easy-listening album, wonderfully rendered. For fans of early ECM records. Masterful cut made by Daniel Krieger at SST in Frankfurt. Edition of 250.

VA Lagos All Routes 2LP
2017 repress; originally released in 2005. Honest Jon's presents the second of two compilations (Lagos Chop Up (HJR 015LP) being the first) focusing on music from the Nigerian city of Lagos circa the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s (considered to be the golden age of African popular music). With many African nations fighting for (or gaining) independence, locally produced modern music was seen as a powerful expression of new national identity. Bands either modernized folk, classical, or traditional African genres, or Africanized foreign genres such as R&B and funk. From West Africa came '60s highlife, which then influenced Fela Kuti's Afro-funk of the '70s, while from the traditional Yoruba religion came juju, fuji, waka, and apala tracks, all of which are included here. Includes tracks by Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey & His Inter-Reformers Band, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Travellers Lodge Atomic 8, Sagbeni Aragbada, Super Negro Bantous, Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson, Ambali Adedeji, Chief Umobaurie and His Group, Mike Ejeagha, Kollington Ayinla, The Harbours Band, Haruna Ishola, Dr Victor Olaiya, and Sir Patrick Idahosa.

ALLEN, TONY Lagos No Shaking 2LP
2017 repress. Honest Jon's Records reissues this 2006 classic from Afrobeat co-creator and master drummer Tony Allen. The much-lauded Lagos No Shaking pays tribute to the powerful sounds and rhythms of Allen's homeland of Lagos, Nigeria, marking a return to the classic percussive stylings which harken back to his seminal contribution to Fela Kuti's Africa 70 and Egypt 80. This is the real thing -- raw and uncut, recorded in Lagos over ten nights with a 20-piece band, including the finest musicians in the city, not least deep horn-blasting from Lekan Animashaun (Baba Ani) and Show Boy from the killer Fela line-ups, and the palm-wine veteran Fatai Rolling Dollar, who adds his throaty, commanding tones and throbbing agidigbo thumb piano to four tracks. There are the R&B sensibilities of Yinka Davies and Omololu Ogunleye; and Muritala Adisa adds touches of ewe, a form of spoken praise-singing rooted in ancient Yoruba tradition. But the key element is, of course, Allen's powerful, yet magnificently relaxed drumming, which keeps everything in perpetual rocking motion, tempering the hard funk edges of classic Afrobeat with earthier Lagosian flavors. Indeed, while the album's observations on Lagos life are aptly tough and sardonic, this is a warmer, more down-home, perhaps more humane album than anything Fela ever produced. Afro-funk, stone-classic dance music in six-minute chunks.

ACTRESS Splazsh 2LP
2017 repress; 2LP version with embossed printing on cover. This is the eagerly?awaited second album by Werk Discs founder and controller Darren Cunningham. Splazsh is an adventurous, ultra-modern, thoroughly British affair, rummaging about in the inner lives of house and techno, and brilliantly elaborating the accomplishments of his debut, Hazyville (WERK 005CD). Determinedly off?the?map and resistant to pigeonholing, Cunningham is an enigmatic and playful figure, citing Francis Bacon and Monet as inspirations alongside Theo Parrish, Anthony "Shake" Shakir, Daft Punk, "binary codes and numeral systems," and The Avengers. He's a hard man to pin down -- somehow a key player in the post?dubstep diaspora and yet not there at all -- but everything comes across in his shape?shifting, richly-textured music. The South Londoner's acclaimed debut lived up to its name: a series of dream-like sketches and ideas. For Splazsh, the fog has lifted, the sounds are less submerged than before, but still sticky and close -- a signature combination of exuberance and introversion, luminescence and puzzlement. Unconstrained by the formal clichés of the dance music he loves, Actress' melodies and arrangements are enthralled by their own genies. Worlds of disturbance and melancholy revolve giddyingly inside the insidious funk of tracks like "Get Ohn" and "Lost." A range of musical influences is redrawn, from speed-garage to grime, with none crowned king. There is a reflectiveness -- the ambient drift of "Futureproofing," the radiophonic judder of "Supreme Cunnilingus" -- in amongst the industrial, synth?wave flavors of "Casanova," and the stirring, stately "Maze." Actress has quickly and justly become one of the most respected names in the UK's new dance music underground. His own label, Werk Discs, has proven itself one of the most formidable and taste?making UK independents of recent times, bringing the world extraordinary albums from Zomby, Lukid, Lone and Actress himself. In love with the mysteries of groove and repetition, Splazsh is both a culmination and a new beginning for Actress -- a substantial and eccentric work from a brave and coolly individual artist.

VON OSWALD TRIO, MORITZ Sounding Lines 2LP
2017 repress. Gatefold double LP version. The Moritz Von Oswald Trio opens a new chapter. There's a new configuration to the project, with Tony Allen joining original members Moritz von Oswald and Max Loderbauer. Allen, the legendary drummer who's amassed a formidable catalog both as a solo artist and as part of Fela Kuti's band, has taken over percussion duties from Vladislav Delay. Together, von Oswald, Loderbauer, and Allen form something close to a dream team, two masters of the electronic sphere meeting an afrobeat pioneer. Allen had already established a rapport with the group before they entered the studio to record Sounding Lines -- he's been touring with von Oswald and Loderbauer for more than a year, playing live shows around the world. There has been an evolution on each new Moritz Von Oswald Trio record, and Sounding Lines is no different. The album, which was mixed by Ricardo Villalobos, maintains the project's trajectory -- a fearless exploration of dub techno, classical music, and jazz -- but the prevailing mood feels looser and more organic than ever before. Allen's imperious percussive work sits tantalizingly in the mix. His drums meet the electronics of von Oswald and Loderbauer in a way that renders the project in new, vivid colors. There are 4/4 tracks, beatless interludes, and complex jazz structures, with propulsive recordings ("3") coexisting alongside more languid moments ("1"). Sometimes Allen provides flourishes of drums (notably on "4") while at other times spectral synths come to the fore (as on "5"). Von Oswald, a masterful composer and arranger with a deep understanding of space, paints the crevices of each composition on Sounding Lines with rich detail. Individually, von Oswald, Loderbauer, and Allen are formidable and hugely influential musicians. As a trio, they've conjured something remarkable. Tony Allen, drums; Max Loderbauer, synthesizers; Moritz von Oswald, percussion sequencing, synthesizers, additional electronics. Artwork by Marc Brandenburg.

2017 limited repress. Stephen O'Malley deploys the second in a trio of documents of his improvisational prowess following his crushing Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs, which was brought forward in tribute to the November 2015 Paris attacks and released in December 2015. The minimalist electric guitar mantra Dread Live was performed at Studio Helmbreker in Haarlem, Netherlands, on September 6, 2013, and recorded by Mathijs Ton, with technical support by the great Tos Nieuwenhuizen, using a hypercardioid ribbon mic with immaculate '70s valve amp backline. The set was programmed as part of the opening of the Dread -- Fear in the age of technological acceleration exhibition at De Hallen Haarlem, curated by Juha van't Zelfde. It renders 40 minutes of Sunn O)))'s O'Malley at his most depressive and heavy and is something akin to a slow-motion baptism by waves of tarry, blackened harmonic distortion, holding the listener under its sinking pressure. O'MALLEY, STEPHEN End Ground LP
Limited 2017 repress. End Ground forms the 3rd and final installment in a series of records documenting the solo prowess of Sunn 0)))'s Stephen O'Malley released on Sweden's iDEAL Recordings. It was performed on electric guitar thru Sunn model T amps, and captured on zoom H4 at Centre Cultural Suisse, Bad Bonn Carte Blanche, Paris, France, on October 18th, 2013. In solo mode, stripped of his usual accomplices and collaborators, O'Malley is no less than an elemental force. His durational meditations absorb and consume with steady-handed wave after wave of charred, sustained, and sub-harmonized chords casting the mesmerizing minimalist practice of La Monte Young into the physicality of Black Sabbath's original, heavy metal die. The A-side/first half of this 45 minute performance features O'Malley tentatively coaxing out languorous riffs which turn the air around him to a pensive, vibrating mush. As the 2nd half dawns he begins to deliver more crushing blows, drawing out and subsiding the chords with a patented, gut-wrenching and vivifying power that transcends rock, avant-garde, minimalism -- all of that -- to awaken dormant senses not usually experienced with other musics or concise temporality. As with many of the most affective heavy drone recordings by Sunn 0))), among others, a modicum of patience is required in order to attain the right state for reception, but once your mind and body are malleable, the impact is deliciously visceral, primal and whelming. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Individually hand-numbered edition of 700 copies.

O'MALLEY, STEPHEN Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs 2LP
Stephen O'Malley on Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs upon its initial release in December 2015: "On 8 January 2015, the day following the Charlie Hebdo murders in Paris (the city I have called home for the last eight years), I started a week-long tour of Norway. During this jaunt I faced the toxic reality daily of the horrible blossoming events intermittently via television. . . . The Trondheim concert on 9 January (depicted here) happened on a particularly intense day in this timeline... and was personally a true example of the purging power of immersion in music. Through a web of emotions resolving distance, disintegration, the intense power of the moment and the brutal fundamentalist, cultural and psychological aspects behind. . . Like most of us I have also sometimes fallen for the constant baiting toward anger, outrage, paranoia and fear in the daily life, often but not always misdirected, but it is not debilitating by any means. It's clear that as an experimental guitar player I have absolutely no political power (or even ability to articulate in those forms) but it's important to take the opportunity to say 'fuck you' in these situations. To the fascist and fundamentalist movements. To the absurding of the worst sides of monotheistic belief systems. And not only the perpetrators behind these events but also on other sides including the reactive and opportunistic. Those with most to gain are the underlying authoritarians in our own societies who have opportunities to implement and increase their control even further for their gains. The 'security' changes we face in fact may also result in yet further increase in the loss of liberty and freedom. The reactions aimed toward increased separation of cultures, xenophobia, nationalism, and especially racism are highly regrettable. I hope these recordings offer a small sense of solace in the time, even for the few hundred who hear them. . . . For the concert on this record we had a massive backline with beautiful vintage Hiwatt amplifiers, and two PAs (including a Funktion One) in the small venue Blæst, the night hosted by Nymusikk. . . . This record is actually the third part of a trilogy of live solo guitar records we intended to be released on iDEAL during spring 2016." Mastered and cut by Matt Colton; Edition of 700 (hand-numbered).

H. TICAL Impact: Synthesized Sound And Music LP
Intervallo present a reissue of H. Tical's, aka Armando Sciascia, Impact: Synthesized Sound And Music, originally released in 1971. From the very first second, Impact: Synthesized Sound And Music is a difficult, icy release, embracing many cornerstones of what would become known as industrial music. These 16 sonic experiments are totally devoted to VCS3 synthesizers, which are the main architects of whirling escapes, white noise, and sonic landscapes in the mood of early Warp releases. Impact: Synthesized Sound And Music was originally released via Armando Sciascia's Vedette label in 1971, under the alias H. Tical. It's a really peculiar library music album, filled with incredibly contemporary sounds and atmospheres. Unlike Distortions by Blue Phantom (1971), whose super groovy and almost hard-prog tracks are all credited to H. Tical, this is a totally different sonic planet - and it's difficult to figure out what kind of images could be paired with such an extreme experiment, which is a one-of-a-kind effort in Sciascia's more traditional career as a composer. Moreover, the musical delirium is enhanced by the usual beauty of the titles, such as "Colluvium", "Metastasis", "Trigonos", "Intercosmic", "Rubidio", or "Laser", mixing Latin and English. This is a wonderful, alienating album made of "static" music, totally estranged from the idea of movement. A true desert island album, or better said, an abandoned planet album. Edition of 400.

VA La Natura E L'Uomo LP
Intervallo present a reissue of La Natura E L'Uomo, originally released in 1973. Intervallo's third reissue in the incredible series of nature-themed libraries originally released in the first half of the '70s by Cardium, Chic, Nereide, Musical, Rhombus, Spring, and Weekend labels. Real hardcore collector items which gave birth to a small cult during the last four decades. La Natura E L'Uomo, (Italian for "nature and mankind"), first came out in 1973; despite being part of the same series as Biologia Marina (1973) and Ittiologia (1973) (part of Intervallo's reissue series), it is actually a different affair, in which the avant-garde urge partly leaves room for sweeter, acoustic atmospheres. But there are also amazing examples of ambient experimentations such as "Protozoi" or "Venus", both featured in two versions. The main characters of this release are pretty much the same ones we met in the other volumes: Alessandro Alessandroni, Franco Tamponi, and Amedeo Tommasi. La Natura E L'Uomo also introduces two new names: Marco Di Marco, author of the tracks with a more definite easy listening mood, is a pianist and a jazz composer from Bologna, while the alias Kema hides Alessandroni's wife, the amazingly talented Giulia De Muittis, who was an equally formidable force. She and her husband are responsible for the most enticing tracks of the album: "Bassa Marea", "Pescatori", and "Venus". Edition of 400.

With cinematographic soundscapes, thick bass lines, tangible percussion, eerie keys, and charming vocals, this synergetic masterpiece treads the boundaries between jazz, Gameboy sounds, chanson, psychedelic desert, soul, minimal, seventies pop, dub, electronic, and classical music with a hint of a John Carpenter-esque style to boot. Rooted in the past but spanning to the future, Jeff Özdemir & Friends Vol. 2 refuses to be pigeon-holed into any one decade or genre, transcending these categories without destroying them. Through deep experimentation, Turkish-born multi-instrumentalist Özdemir and his circle of friends have managed to create their own unique sound whilst remaining changeable and varied. Much like the collaborators of the project itself, each song has its own personality drawing from the various corners of the musical universe and joining together to create a new world. The tracks oscillate between Özdemir's solo-work, to dual collaborations, to group projects and include names such as F.S. Blumm, Andrew Pekler, Halloumi Express, Sonja Polligkeit, Benjamin Wild, and Dizzy from Rotation. Drawing from their creators diverse backgrounds, the songs incorporate multi-cultural, multi-linguistic elements including French, Japanese, Turkish and Portuguese. Despite its wide scope, this album and its catchy, lingering melodies is both cerebral and accessible. Jeff Özdemir & Friends Vol. 2 gives you an insight into Özdemir's world which he centers around his record store, 33rpm Store, in the heart of Berlin Kreuzberg. It is through this hub that he and his friends join together to discuss, listen to and, of course, make music. LP version. Delroy Wilson, the original "Cool Operator", was also known to many as "Teacher". A title given to him as he unselfishly taught the up-and-coming singers, including Dennis Brown, the art and delivery of singing technique. Delroy's rich tone to his voice added a depth to any song that he chose to sing. Delroy Wilson (b.1948 Kingston, Jamaica) began his musical career at the school that was Coxsone Dodd's studio One label. After a brief stop in 1969, which saw Delroy working for producer Sonia Pottinger's Tip Top label, he was producing such hits including "It Hurts" and "Put Yourself In My Place". The 1970s saw Delroy Wilson's arrival at Bunny "Striker" Lee's door and what would result in a winning formula, scoring hit after hit. It is from this great period in Delroy's career that Kingston Sounds have compiled this selection of killer tunes, cut with the drum and bass rhythm kings themselves, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Such classics as "Who Care", "Can I Change Your Mind", "Get Ready", "You Must Believe Me", and the timeless title track to this collection, "Here Comes The Heartaches". GAS Narkopop 3LP+CD
Limited repress; Triple LP version. Includes CD. Comes with a 24-page booklet in a hardcover book. In the body of work of Cologne artist Wolfgang Voigt - who, like few others, has informed, shaped and influenced the world of electronic music with countless different projects since the early 1990s - Gas stands out in particular, a saturnine sound cosmos based on heavily condensed classic sequences. Even after nearly 20 years, the sound of Gas doesn't seem to have lost any of its luster, as shown by the commanding success of Kompakt's fall 2016 re-release of the essential back catalogue as a box set (KOM 370LP). The overwhelming feedback from a loyal international fan community and worldwide media outlets attests once again to the sheer timelessness of Gas. Which is why it will feel like hardly a day has passed since the release of the last official album Pop nearly two decades ago in 2000, when Wolfgang Voigt resumes this specific creative path with the upcoming new full-length Narkopop. Even in the here and now, the unmistakable vibe of Gas immediately hits home, taking the listener on an otherworldly journey with the very first sounds, drawing them into an impervious sonic thicket, down to the depths of rapture and reverie. From wafts of dense symphonic mist emerges a floating and whirling feeling of weightlessness, before the listener steps into an eerily beautiful forest of fantasy, pulled in by the allure of a narcotic bass drum. While earlier Gas tracks were often based on the hypnotic effects of looping techniques, the ten new pieces on Narkopop unfold their magic in a more entwined manner, sometimes with the sonic might of an entire philharmonic orchestra, at times subtle and fragile. A main characteristic of Voigt's oeuvre, the coalescence of seemingly contradictory stylistic aspects such as harmonious and atonal, concrete and abstract, light and heavy, near and far is also a decisive feature of Narkopop. In accordance with the transgressive spirit of his collective work, Voigt carries the aesthetic conceptions of his music over to the realm of the visual. Based on his abstract forest pictures, the Gas artwork addresses Voigt's artistic affinity to romanticism and the forest as a place of yearning. For the first time, a closer look at the cover of Narkopop reveals signs of architectural fragments which hint at another, maybe parallel world behind Voigt's forest. Truth is the prettiest illusion.

KUBIKOV, ANTON Whatness LP
LP version. While the last Kompakt offering from legendary Russian synthesists SCSI-9 dates back to 2008, when the duo released their album Easy As Down (KOMP 068CD), co-founder and techno/house virtuoso Anton Kubikov kept himself busy cultivating his own label Pro-Tez Records and establishing a career as solo artist with a clear penchant for dub-infused soundscapes and ambient music. Whatness is Kubikov's first solo full-length under his proper name. Weaving airy and iridescent sonic tapestry, Whatness takes up where his excellent contributions to Kompakt's Pop Ambient compilations left off. Anton Kubikov's special ear for ambience and tonal spaces was always an integral part of SCSI-9's musical DNA, alternating between tight dance workouts and vast melodic range. But it's as a solo artist that he truly started to explore these spaces, following mysterious sonic trails into foggy, reverb-heavy territory. Kubikov's contributions to the several installments of Kompakt's Pop Ambient compilation series announced the arrival of a promising new project, a promise more than satisfied with the immersive sound bath of first solo outing Whatness. Going from the richly layered electronic drones of "Liquid Mirror" or "Entrance" to the lush ambient dub of "Other The Sea" and "Kurt's Forest", or the minimalist, evocative piano of "Oktober" and "Pia", the album covers a lot of stylistic ground, but remains committed to its overall aesthetic of misty mountains and serene valleys. With the endearing "April", a true Pop Ambient classic from the 2016 compilation (KOMP 128CD/KOM 345LP) makes a welcome return, priming the canvas for the subtle bass throb of "North" and its charming synth bell orchestra. Masterfully refining and extending his sonic pallet on Whatness, Anton Kubikov can claim his spot among the very best of today's ambient composers.

Settling in Portland, Oregon they formed Wimeanacas Band which translates to Castle In The Sky. This is their second album, originally released on cassette in 1987. An amazing album of Cambodian celebration music, Wimeanacas played weddings, new year parties and community events during their 10 year existence. For this record, the band recorded all original numbers and had grown to a 10 piece ensemble."

Maybe Tomorrow are back with a release from Colin La Plante, aka The Mole, aka half owner of this imprint. Spicy noodles are something Colin thinks everyone can love. Nothing too outlandish from The Mole, but the path he chose with the title and crowd favorite "Gelb Grun Blau" definitely has these tracks leaning towards the center of a DJ sets. Spiraling kick drums with a fine blend of digital synths, analog synths, drum machines, and the occasional sample. Vape-house anyone? "Back In The Studio Game" is a beatless one, created just for the sunrises.

ANT TRIP CEREMONY 24 Hours LP
Merlins Nose Records present a reissue of Ant Trip Ceremony's 24 Hours, originally released in 1968. Some albums exist with the knowledge that the band is about to break up, and with that in mind, the members attempt to capture at least a tiny bit of the magic they once created at rehearsals and concerts. These kinds of albums are way more personal, like a picture book of memories, than albums made for the commercial market. 24 Hours by Ant Trip Ceremony is one of those albums, recorded by a bunch of high school students soon to part ways after their exams. It is nearly impossible to get a hold of an original since it was pressed in an edition of 300. Fans of late 1960s jammy, psychedelic rock and dreamy folk tunes will go crazy for this collection of songs. Among them you'll find cover versions of Eric Andersen, a well-known singer/songwriter of the day, Allen Toussaint, a famous songwriter, producer, and soul musician, Billy Roberts, who wrote the ultimate rock classic "Hey Joe", as well as a couple of contributions of people close to the band, next to a handful of originals. The band had a quite unique expression while their overall style fitted well into their era. Some more or less intense but never really heavy rock songs, some mellow tunes that make your spirit drift away into gardens of delight painted in surrealistic colors. Fans of Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, The Charlatans, and other similar heroes and legends of the late '60s west coast scene will dig this primitive version of the super stars. The songs here are all incredible and definitely made to last a lifetime. A lost crown jewel of '60s music.

ROLLINS, SONNY Saxophone Colossus DVD
"Tenor saxophone master Sonny Rollins has long been hailed as one of the most important artists in jazz history, and still, today, he is viewed as the greatest living jazz improviser. In 1986, filmmaker Robert Mugge produced Saxophone Colossus, a feature-length portrait of Rollins, named after one of his most celebrated albums. The project began in May of that year when Mugge and a small crew accompanied Sonny and Lucille Rollins to Tokyo, Japan where the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra premiered his Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra with Heikki Sarmanto of Finland conducting and Rollins himself soloing throughout. The next big shoot was in August, when Mugge and a larger crew filmed Rollins and his ensemble performing at sculpted rock quarry Opus 40 in Saugerties, New York. The most surprising part of the latter concert was that, midway through his performance, Rollins leaped from a 6-foot cliff, fell to his back on the ground and, in spite of suffering a broken heel, continued to play his saxophone. Rounding out the production were interviews with Rollins in Japan, with Heikki Sarmanto in Japan, with Rollins and his wife Lucille in New York City, and with jazz critics Ira Gitler, Gary Giddins, and Francis Davis, also in New York City. A soundtrack album, G-Man, released by Fantasy Records, was named by Village Voice music critic Robert Christgau as the best album of 1987, whether jazz or rock, and the fourth best album of the decade. For MVD Visual's new release of Saxophone Colossus on both Blu-ray and DVD, the film has been given 4K remastering, and an updated commentary by Mugge is included as a bonus feature."

14 ICED BEARS 14 Iced Bears 2LP
Optic Nerve present an expanded reissue of 14 Iced Bears' self-titled album, originally released in 1988. This reissue includes the full original album and all 12 tracks from their first three EPs. The 14 Iced Bears were formed within a vibrant indie scene in Brighton in 1985 by Robert Sekula and drummer Nick Emery, with a punky, DIY pop ethic that held melody as key and technical expertise as less of an issue. They wrote catchy pop songs and recorded with a ramshackle charm that reflected their passion for sixties garage and psychedelia. Inspired by bands like The Byrds and The Velvet Underground, this set them apart from their C86 (1986) contemporaries. They were spotted at their first gig by ex-Television Personalities bassist Mark Flunder, who decided that he wanted to put out a 14 Iced Bears single on the fledgling Frank Records. Inside was released in late 1986. Upon hearing it, legendary BBC 1 Radio 1 DJ John Peel booked them in for a session. His enthusiasm was evident. He made it one of his sessions of the year and praised each track in turn after playing it. "Balloon Song" was featured in the session and the single version which fronted the bands second single, The Importance of Being Frank EP (1987) further consolidated their following. The band toured England and Europe and the press was ecstatic. The late '80s revival of classic guitar-based pop was kind to the Bears, and Sekula's talent at penning catchy, twisted melodies earned them a coveted spot as one of the best of the lot. A third single sealed the deal, the raucous Come Get Me on the seminal indie label Sarah Records (1988). The band went on the release their self-titled debut album in 1988; it was a masterpiece of psychedelic pop that turned a lot of heads with its ambition and skilled songcraft. The album betrayed the influence of sixties psychedelia on the group and became a hit on US college radio. Limited edition double LP, pressed on color vinyl; Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves.

"40000 L" uses gargling synth patterns and howling horns to dramatic effect; "Bei Nacht H (178)" contrasts the kick with a harsh, tinny drumbeat and menacing melody pad, creating a nightmarish vibe. "Backmask N" offers heavily alienated vocal samples alongside rave-reminiscing synth stabs and staggered hi-hat percussion. "Derange" closes with grainy drone echoes and throbbing, sizzling synth pulses.

PABLO, AUGUSTUS Augustus Pablo At King Tubbys LP
Repressed; LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Augustus Pablo's Augustus Pablo At King Tubbys, originally released in 2005. The visionary musician and record producer Augustus Pablo made some of the most unique and individual recordings in the history of reggae. As with his friend and mentor, Jackie Mittoo, the man born Horace Swaby was of mixed Indian and African heritage, and although his middle-class background might have pointed him in a very different direction, the lure of Jamaica's sound system culture captured him at a young age, particularly after debilitating health problems saw him drop out of school. He began recording as a session keyboardist as the '60s gave way to the '70s, but everything changed when a school-friend introduced him to the melodica, a small plastic keyboard operated by a mouthpiece, which he used on seminal recordings for producer Herman Chin-Loy, credited to Augustus Pablo on the release. During the early 1970s, Pablo crafted melodica instrumentals for all of the leading reggae producers, scoring "best instrumental" for "Java" in 1973, and launching the Rockers label to showcase self-produced work at the same time. This multi-faceted compilation, first issued on Bunny Lee's Attack label in 2005, compiles memorable melodica interpretations of some of Lee's greatest productions, recorded over dub cuts of immortal numbers such as Cornell Campbell's "Queen Of The Minstrel" and John Holt's "My Desire".

CAMPBELL, CORNELL Dance In A Greenwich Farm LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Cornell Campbell's Dance In A Greenwich Farm, originally released in 1975. As noted on another release -- see Ropin' (RR 307CD/LP) -- Cornell Campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any Jamaican singer, and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. He began his career for Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd in 1956, when rhythm and blues held sway in Jamaica, and later cut some ska songs for King Edwards. He then passed through the Sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at Treasure Isle, before returning to Studio One with the Eternals, scoring huge hits such as "Stars" and "Queen Of The Minstrel" as the '60s gave way to the '70s. His greatest phase of popularity was then brokered by hit-making producer Bunny Lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the '80s. The 1975 album Dance In A Greenwich Farm was first issued on the Grounation label in the UK. Along with a reworking of "Stars", retitled "The Sun", a reworking of "Queen Of The Minstrel", as "Girl Of My Dreams", and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album also has the boastful "Conquering Gorgon" and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the Gaylads' "No Good Girl", a version of the Heptones' "Why Did You Leave Me" and a killer cut of the Uniques' "Watch This Sound" (based on "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield).

PATRICIA Several Shades Of The Same Color Part 2 LP
This grouping of audio recordings is for aural use only. Any emotional content perceived herein is borne of its listener, and is in no way intended by its author. Any sounds resembling speech are not intended to convey meaning. Several Shades Of The Same Color is Patricia's first album for Spectral Sound -- produced in conjunction with his own label Active Cultures. Solo project of Max Ravitz who is also in Inhalants (with Jahiliyya Fields), Masks (with Arp), Patreke (with Terekke), and Pulpo (with Bookworms), among many other projects. Tips for listeners: consider the moment in which you exist; pay attention to how these sounds evoke physiological (rather than cognitive) responses. Listeners may find themselves deriving immense physical pleasure from exposure to these sounds. Inability to achieve such pleasure is likely attributable to over-analysis of the aforementioned audio content -- or to improper amplification. Each of Shades' three LPs features suites of tracks that, considered alone, comprise their own distinct, unique worlds. Part 2's "The Electric Eye is Upon Me" swirls endlessly, while "Shiba Inu Dub" is cut for the floor and coy as its namesake. Any emotional associations incurred while listening come at the listener's discretion. Furthermore, the identity of the author and/or their passions regarding the recordings herein shall bear no weight on the listener's experience. This body of work is not intended to generate ideas; rather, its goal is to produce physical sensations in the listener. Taken altogether, Several Shades Of The Same Color is kaleidoscopic, a multi-faceted techno trip. Listen in full, or listen in part. And if you consider only one of these intermittent listening notes, make it this one: Don't think; just hear. Comes in a two-panel jacket with a reverse finish; Artwork by Molly Smith.

Calypso in the Caribbean includes a range of genres, including: the benna genre of Antiguan and Barbudan music; mento, a style of Jamaican folk music that greatly influenced ska and reggae; ska, the precursor to rocksteady and reggae; spouge, a style of Barbadian popular music; cadence-lypso, which mixed calypso with the cadence rampa of Haiti and Dominican traditional music; and soca music, a style of kaiso/calypso, with influences from cadence-lypso, soul, funk, and Indian musical instruments. From the liner notes: "CALYPSO, the infectious rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean area originated in Trinidad. It is really the musical expression of the Afro- West-Indian population. There are various explanations for the origin of the word 'Calypso', but it is most likely that it stems from the African word 'Kaiso', which means BRAVO. The lyrics (in a dialectic English) and the melody are usually made up at the spur of the moment. The words very often have a double meaning. The topic is sex, but frequently deals with current events of social and political happenings. The rhythms are enticing and therefore popular for dancing." GARSON, MORT Mother Earth's Plantasia LP
Repressed. The Great Thunder present a reissue of Mort Garson's Mother Earth's Plantasia, originally released in 1976. Garson is well known as one of the pioneers of electronic music in the late '60s and some may have heard of his contributions to quite a few pop hits back in the day when he wrote and conducted orchestral arrangements for a few popular artists. During the second half of the 1960s, Mort Garson and his sidekicks Paul Beaver and Jacques Wilson among others, discovered the newly invented synthesizer courtesy of Robert Moog and made it an integral part of the future pop music even before Wendy Carlos released Switched On Bach in 1968. Plantasia was recorded and released a few years past Garson's monumental works: The Zodiac's Cosmic Sounds (1967), The Wozard Of Iz's An Electronic Odyssey (1968), and Lucifer's Black Mass (1971). Plantasia, originally released in 1976, has been labeled "warm earth music for plants . . . and the people who love them." So you as the listener can imagine that this is a rather bright affair, far from the dark and seething atmosphere of the earlier electronic pieces. A shining diversity of stylistic devices used as the foundation for dreamy and colorful compositions, which works like a soundtrack for a non-existent movie. The warm, yet haunting Moog melodies can still create a rather sinister vibe in their most playful and surreal moments, similar to what you would expect from a mid-seventies horror flicks from Italy. It is a feeling that, despite everything seeming peaceful and relaxed on the surface, something utterly dire is about to rise up. These are certainly just a few passages and when Mort Garson and his mates move on from lush orchestral soul arrangements to something white men always consider to be tribal music of the North American natives, you will drift with them from one scene of your inner mind movie to the next. At this point in the seventies, the technical requirements had already been a bit better with new inventions such as electronic percussion which gets used here and there, conjuring memories of records by German electronic pioneers from the same era, such as Cluster, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream. And despite the twinkle-toed harmonies and big arrangements, which point at the big band music and orchestral pop Garson originated from, the whole work is futuristic and intriguing.

DJ STINGRAY Kern Vol. 4 CD
To feel the future is to feel the fall into time. For the fourth instalment in Tresor's Kern mix series, DJ Stingray (Urban Tribe/Drexciya) presents a device for decoding time in all directions, a sonic prism that refracts our senses into auxiliary components of a total future-rush. With a far-reaching selection that has been worked into his own unique form, DJ Stingray wraps the listener's vertigo around a gritty pneumatic bump with high-velocity swing. His mixing style, prepared for hostile engagements as it is, throttles techno into counter-gravity forces. Wading through a specialized cross-section of Detroit's own dancefloor contagions as well as the contaminated feedback signals from across the global aqua plains, the mix can be summed up in just one word: hectic. Raw, caustic, synthetic rhythm-code pumps frenzy itself through a cascading geothermal fog. Never giving away the cryptographic keys, DJ Stingray works you harder than your heart, adapting your biology to a fractal timeline of viscous systems. Discovery, or uncovering, has to do with what already exists actually or virtually; it is therefore certain to happen sooner or later with enough sweat in the club. And as Kern Vol. 4 attests to, DJ Stingray has the access codes and the stealth sense to make a place of a space, and to let it fall into time. The sanctity of ballet as elite aristocratic high art has always been a thinly-veiled facade for blatant eroticism, where women are interchangeable pieces of scenery arranged in colonnades for the pleasure of the male gaze. The Lilac Fairy herself was originally choreographed by Imperial Master Marius Petipa for his unskilled but beautiful daughter Marie as a mime part, but has been modified over the past century to become one of the most taxing characters in the female dancer's repertoire... The Lilac Fairy is a ricochet between fabrication and obliteration, degradation and ritualized exaltation... Only within the noise does she ascend, within the inimitable walls of The Rita that choke every frequency, devour all and drown all, shatter every object. Everything is reduced to geometry, a cello attempts to accompany and is pulverized. Within the abstraction of harsh noise, The Rita simultaneously brings to life and annihilates the total fetish object, and in this performance of gestures she is elevated to the realm of non-objectivity, the Black Square of Malevich, Vessel and Void - pure. Listeners would be wise to note that Sam McKinlay has transcended the trope of the romanticized cult of genius surrounding solitary harsh noise, and The Rita is now half-woman, with the integral presence of Arlie Doyle as both the embodiment of the objectified form/performative feminine and collaborator in the sonic deconstruction of her own body. Additionally, The Lilac Fairy utilizes the contributions of several skilled craftspeople and musicians, with the tutu constructed by Katherine Hotmer and fittings to Doyle's body performed by Rachel Hayward, Luke Tandy's assiduous recording of the process of construction, and cello accompaniment by Leila Bordeuil. The sound that has made McKinlay a modern master of harsh noise remains intact, but the expansive critical and collaborative scope of The Lilac Fairy makes it a hallmark in the oeuvre of The Rita." --Kristin Hayter

EDWIGE Edwige LP
The intrinsic fandom tendency toward Eurotrash actress Edwige Fenech has possibly been one of the most encompassing examples of "obsession" translating into layers of pummeling abrasive sound, especially in the building block heyday of the heavier OVMN and Incapacitants inspired style of international contemporary, early '00s, harsh noise artists. Edwige Fenech - just the name sends the educated into a whirlwind of her cinematic stylizations, objectification, and glorious portrayal and generator of mandates for various Eurotrash genres: The inconceivable layered work with Rosalba Neri in The Seducers (1969); The awe inspiring bobbed haircut and mannerisms of Gently Before She Dies (1972); The sex worker apparel and curly blonde wig from Taxi Girl (1977); The slicked and pinned back hair and nylon worship of Dr. Jekyl Likes Them Hot (1979); The crew cut haircut and bare feet glimpses from Strip Nude For Your Killer (1975); The '70s wavy, curly hair and the stockings during the sultry couch scenes from Lover Boy (1975); The courtesan role intense leg worship and playful mannerisms of Giovannona Long Thigh (1973); The sun-tanning and fetish exercise programs of Vices In The Family (1975) acting alongside Susan Scott; The medieval maiden and mistress aesthetic of Ubalda All Naked And Warm (1972). Not unlike the pornography and the extreme lifestyle fascination of the '90s Americanoise, the interests continued to be deconstructed and melded into harsh noise as the conscious and studious harsh noise artists of the '00s continued to study the European cult film and its objectified actresses and fetish driven aspects. The experience is cumulative the more you watch, collect, and study the various genres that Edwige Fenech was featured in and that inspired the cumulative and layered aspects of the harsh noise project Edwige with the original line-up of Keith (Mania), Sam McKinlay (The Rita), and Dan Johansson (Sewer Election), and later Nolan Throop (Kakerlak) filling in for Keith on a 2008 American tour. Between the sets on the 2008 tour from The Rita, Sewer Election, Kakerlak, and Dog Holocaust, the '90s rough American style, harsh noise worship was palpable. It's only natural that a tape was generated as exemplary from the tour days of 2008. Comes on 140 gram vinyl; Comes in a deluxe silver silkscreen on black cardboard sleeve; Includes a black and white poster; Edition of 199 (hand-numbered).

DEAD BODY LOVE/ATRAX MORGUE Dead Body Love/Atrax Morgue LP
"It feels like I've been writing about Dead Body Love for as long as I have been recording harsh noise. What else can be said? I can't express enough how much of an influence Italian harsh noise has had on my own personal works, but It also lets me and several peers investigate the techniques and styles of the 1990s harsh noise and the atmosphere that was created expressed from different regions of the world. The more I listen and revisit the material of '90s Japanese harsh noise, the '80s UK power electronics, and the celebrated rougher tendencies of '90s Americanoise, the Italian material and different projects flare up that dictate a powerful 'Coles Notes' of harsh noise and how it can be deconstructed and eventually materialized into vivisected lines and layers of crumbling, throbbing, cracking and creaking sound. I always trail back to Mauthausen Orchestra and its insurmountable importance to abrasive sound and its developments, especially in sub sect harsh noise genres of the 2010s... Then you take the obsessions and the lines of moving sound and have them expressed by something like the fanatical Atrax Morgue. Fearsome concentration and jarring meditation on lines of warbling and predatory analog synth work portray something invariably real about the obsession acted out from the Italian project Atrax Morgue. A different display of penetrative and studied sound seethes from Atrax Morgue as now the listener and 'fan' of Italian industrial and harsh noise is confronted with another genre defining sound that pits throbbing and rough synth against haunting and manic vocalizations, disturbing the listener with its undeniable dedicated concentration. The resulting split tape with material from Dead Body Love and Atrax Morgue isn't as black and white as one might think. Dead Body Love makes use of dark and rough early industrial-like lines and meld into the eventual crushing forces that he is known for. In the vein of Atrax Morgue, samples are also manipulated and drawn out for the listener reminding us of his more delay heavy work. Atrax Morgue's material works with DBL's material almost seamlessly via further haunting and throbbing dark material, slowly churning and deconstructing into his own distinct sound of heavily concentrated focus and mania for singular sounds and how they can repeat, move and create total atmosphere." --Sam McKinlay.

REICH & ENSEMBLE MODERN & SYNERGY VOCALS, STEVE Music For 18 Musicians: Tokyo Opera City, Tokyo, Japan, May 21st, 2008 LP
A stunning version of Steve Reich's masterpiece of musical minimalism Music For 18 Musicians (1974-1976), performed live at Tokyo Opera House in 2008 by Ensemble Modern and Synergy Vocals, featuring the composer as guest performer. LP housed in a deluxe die cut jacket with printed insert. In the 1960s, with Terry Riley and Philip Glass, Reich gave pulse back to experimental music. He discovered the tape-based techniques of looping and phasing, using recordings of fragments of speech, and then molecules of musical material." (...) When Steve Reich released Music For 18 Musicians (ECM, 1978), it was a consolidation and major leap forward in the pulse-based music that the minimalist progenitor had been exploring on earlier compositions including 'Four Organs' (1969), a piece that relied on nothing more than a six-note chord, yet was a near flat-out sonic assault. 18 Musicians was an altogether more complex and sophisticated work, with a broader textural palette based largely on tuned percussion -- piano, vibraphone, marimba and xylophone -- but also working with maracas, voice, strings, and clarinets to create a sweeping, hour-plus long suite that was hypnotic, melodic, and eminently accessible. With the mathematical precision by which its eleven sections and wrapping 'Pulses' develop, it's a demanding suite to play (...)" --John Kelman, All About Jazz, 2008
