VA The Test Of Time 2CD
The return of A Turntable Friend Records starts with an opulent 40-track retrospective compilation of their heydays in the 1990s. Peers of Sarah Records and Slumberland Records, but far from copying their style, ATF Records always had their own musical identity allowing for a roster as diverse as Boyracer (with Even As We Speak), Secret Shine, The Claim, The Ropers, Hellfire Sermons, and Lorelei. The Test Of Time is a feast of highlights from the long-deleted back catalog, plus eight unreleased tracks from the period. Many of the original 7"s and 12"s are highly sought-after collector items and several tracks appear. Indie guitar pop of the best variety delivered by bands from the UK, USA, Australia, and Japan. This compilation is a fundraiser for the William Wates Memorial Trust in the UK with all profits being donated. Features: Bomb Pops, The Claim, Love Parade, Hope, Lorelei, Boyracer, My Favourite, Vinegar Blossom, Hulaboy, Tea, Hope, Decemberists Of Liverpool, Hula Hoop, The Apple Moths, Feverfew, Sugar Plant, The Gravy Train, Juniper, Tree Fort Angst, Hellfire Sermons, Antiseptic Beauty, Eva Luna, Secret Shine, Remember Fun, Even As We Speak, and The Rileys. TEA Everybody's Happy Sometimes 2LP
LP version. Orange vinyl; Gatefold sleeve; Includes download code; Edition of 300. Everybody's Happy Sometimes is the 15-track debut album by Tea from the Isle Of Man. Originally planned for release in 1999, it's now finally unleashed onto the world of indie pop. Guitar propelled pop, laced with electronica, like a blend of The Field Mice and The Beloved. Tea consists of guitarist/composer Phil Reynolds (of former John Peel favorites Colon) and singer Pete Buttery. Their initial release, a 10" EP released in 1996 on A Turntable Friend Records, and the following CD EP Breathing in 1999, led to a bunch of radio play and popularity with the fanzine scene community. This release is a fundraiser for the Stop Hate UK charity to which all profits will be donated.

KINK GONG Tibetan Buddhism Trip CD
Psalmody, small bells, big cymbals, gongs and drums -- this puzzling collage of Tibetan Buddhist rites recordings is hypnotizing. It opens the way to the state of trance. The slight electronic arrangement reminds the listener that reality is not so far. The two twenty-minute tracks instantly convey an unknown and fascinating universe. Mantra chanting accelerates, horns become more insistent and a mystical atmosphere arises. With Tibetan Buddhism Trip, Akuphone starts to explore ritual and ceremonial music, here with a subtle mix of field recordings and electronic handlings. Over the years King Gong, aka Laurent Jeanneau, has specialized in the recording of ethnic minorities, particularly from South East Asia. He has recorded over 160 albums and his work is now largely well-known around the globe. An impressive collection allows him to manipulate, assemble, and reconstruct his field recordings in order to create new sound landscapes. Recorded in Tibet and Yunnan (China) between 2006 and 2013. Recomposed in Berlin in 2016. Includes unseen pictures.

BOMBER JACKETS, THE Kudos To The Bomber Jackets LP
Following on from The Lister, The Bomber Jackets' debut for Alter (ALT 014LP, 2013), Kudos To The Bomber Jackets has a restlessness that takes broader strokes. It finds and holds a register of meandering hope by setting the perverted detail of domestic minutiae against an acutely self-conscious melancholy that cynically daydreams its way into an awkward middle-ground between profundity and platitude. At times they give it a bit of a desaturated garage bump, other times there's the throb of marching mono-synth wave. "Deranged Sauce Mum" comes off as a chopped and screwed hardcore, though with Russell Walker's vocals, it's less gurning glee and more furrowed brow. There are very many disparate elements across Kudos To The Bomber Jackets that come to give the new album a kind of uneasy grace, which is perhaps the group's singular force, the unchaining of an ingenious familiarity that's dizzyingly bizarre and equally bleak. Lyrically and musically the album contains the traces of many surfaces, both interior and exterior. Its dream-like qualities are formed through a kind of musical frottage, always preserving the trace of the hand, arriving at its surreal heights through fidgety non-sequiturs of an aesthetically acerbic persuasion. In this way, it never quite replicates anything that you feel to be present in its parts.

GORBACHEV & THE NAKED MAN, PHILIPP I Don't Give A Snare LP
"... It is making my blood boil. Man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff" reads the email from Butthole Surfers producer, Paul Leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut Philipp Gorbachev & The Naked Man album. Philipp Gorbachev, the Russian musician and DJ, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of Moscow in years. In 2014, he released his debut album Silver Album (COMEME 005CD/LP), but when invited to perform a live Boiler Room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. The resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat, but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting basslines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats, jumping around and leading charge on the songs along with Gorbachev's Damo Suzuki-like vocals. Taking that experiment into the studio, I Don't Give A Snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces, and alters tones frequently. The opening 'Goodman' explodes with intense rhythms and heavy, spiraling riffs that at times recall Sabbath, but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. Whilst Gorbachev cites a range of influences from Beck to Blind Willie Johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. Gorbachev on the record: "The main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. I want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor." Comes on 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

VA Disque La Raye: 60's French West-Indies Boo-Boo-Galoo CD
In 1966, a new pulse spread like wildfire on the sidewalks of Spanish Harlem and local radio waves. Like no music genre ever before, boogaloo brought together African Americans and Latinos. As the ultimate musical syncretism of popular genres in the Barrio, boogaloo is often described as "the first Nuyorican music". A revolutionary hurricane was then blowing on Amerika: in the trail of the Black Panthers and the Young Lords Organization, minorities were gathering in the streets to reclaim their rights from the establishment. Boogaloo was the soundtrack of a social revolution overtaking the country, before it got overshadowed by salsa. Boogaloo's energy seduced young people from different backgrounds, well beyond the borders of the USA, and especially in the Caribbean cradle land. From Fort-de-France to Pointe-à-Pitre, old biguines and mazurkas from West Indian orchestras strong of a bloodline of virtuosos, from father-to-son, became outdated by those modern beats. On Fred Aucagos's "Ti Man'zelle", there's a subtle mix of imports from the mainland, the USA, and the neighboring islands. Musicians dabbled with boogaloo, coming up with rather unorthodox interpretations. This is precisely what gives this compilation its singularity. It incorporates influences from the African continent thanks to the Rico Jazz (an adaptation of "Si Tu Bois Beaucoup" of the Congolese rumba orchestra O.K. Jazz). It rubs elbows with the "Jerk Vidé" of a David Martial before he turned in a doudouiste cliché. With the cheeky humor of the Guyanese Dany Play ("Mais Tu Sais"), the perkiness of Joby Valente ("Disk La Rayé" with Camille Soprann on sax), the listener (re)discovers classics published on two historic Guadeloupean labels: Aux Ondes of producer Raymond Célini, and Disque Debs, whose boss Henri Debs can be heard on "Ou Pas Z'ami En Moins". "Ou Qué Di Moin" from Monsieur X is a Creole funk pamphlet, neither Latin, nor festive, and not strictly boogaloo for that matter. The Nuyorican rhythm is a tiny fraction of what the West Indies orchestras were playing, as they often incorporated biguine and Haitian kopi elements. Assisted by Jean-Baptiste Guillot, Julien Achard spent over three years compiling this best of the Creole boogaloo. Also features: Maurice Alcindor, Gabby Siarras, Les Bois Sirop, Le Ry-Co Jazz, and Les Vickings. CD version comes in a digipak with a 16-page booklet with liner notes in English and French.

GROSSKOPF & EBERHARD KRANEMANN, HARALD Krautwerk CD
Harald Grosskopf played drums on the early Klaus Schulze albums and recorded thirteen albums with Ash Ra Tempel. His solo works, 1980's Synthesist (BB 158CD/LP) and 1986's Oceanheart (BB 157CD/LP), are outstanding releases of the German electronic music scene. Eberhard Kranemann studied music at the Dortmund Conservatory and art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He co-founded the electronic bands Kraftwerk, NEU!, Pissoff, and released albums under the pseudonym Fritz Müller. Harald Grosskopf and Eberhard Kranemann transmit cosmic sonic visions of today, tomorrow, and beyond in one of the most exciting collaborations in recent years. Krautwerk -- German efficiency, original, sensational, and mind-melting man-machine transcending art, the philosophy of unbounded sonic colors and resistance thinking. For the first time ever, Harald Grosskopf and Eberhard Kranemann transmit their cosmic sonic visions of today, tomorrow, and beyond. The Germans are great inventors. They gave us the automobile in 1886, Adidas in the 1920s, and then Krautrock in 1970s. The golden children of the genre, Harald Grosskopf and Eberhard Kranemann, have united to celebrate the genre's reign as Krautwerk. Originating from the German cities Berlin and Düsseldorf, krautrock dominated the musical field from 1969-1975. Its influential force impacted rock and techno. Lose yourself in the trippiness of Krautwerk's psychedelic soundscapes and celebrate a movement that changed music as we know it. Kranemann and Grosskopf did not know each other until they met for the first time in 2016 on a festival where they both performed their solo projects. They decided to merge the different sounds of the Düsseldorf and Berlin schools of electronic music together, resulting in energetic, contemporary new sounds.

Esmark, named after a glacier at Spitzbergen that debouches into the Ymer Bay, is a collaboration between the sound architect Nikolai von Sallwitz (Taprikk Sweezee, Karachi Files) and the experimental artist Alsen Rau (Scheich In China, On+Brr). Both have worked on various experimental and performative projects together since 2001. Alsen Rau is also known as one half of the German Duo On+Brr. He recently released under the name Scheich In China and he is one of the founders and curators of the Hamburg-based club Kraniche, which gained attention as an experimental art and music place in Hamburg. He's curated exhibitions, performances, and readings. Nikolai von Sallwitz, known as vocalist and producer Taprikk Sweezee, has composed music and sound design for film, theater, and a various number of art and pop projects, and he has collaborated with visual artists such like Chris Hoffmann, Andreas Nicholas Fischer, and Robert Seidel who crafted a real time performed video piece for one of the tracks. In late 2016, in Scandinavian solitude, quite a number of tracks were recorded by Esmark and some of the work is presented here over two parallel albums named M?ra I and M?ra II (BB 273CD/LP), released on Bureau B. Esmark's musical setup is mainly build analog. Instruments like drum computers and synth boxes have been connected in constantly changing chains of FX and filters. Some were recorded on tape and fed back into the compositions. Track names are partly reflections of bio-geography and cartography of the place where the material was recorded. The dark and hidden polyphony of their debuts, M?ra I and M?ra II, sound like a dystopic science fiction movie, and it is a fundamental ground element and origin on which these haunting minimal compositions are based on.

DIAGNOS Diagnos LP
Diagnos was founded by Stockholm based artists Marcus Harrling and Per Nyström who have long-time backgrounds in the Swedish independent music scene, working with The Concretes, Monster, Mackaper, and Sons Of Cyrus, amongst others. Harrling first approached Nyström with the idea of Diagnos as a project to develop soundtracks to Super 8 travel films he had shot. The two then began to improvise further, with film and literature inspirations in the foreground and their music. The result is an emotive record, varying between instrumental and vocal numbers, poetic, drone-y, and folky. Diagnos ranges anywhere from early Sonic Youth in texture and delivery, to '70s Swedish prog in the vein of Arbete Och Fritid. Other times, you'll be hypnotized by the minimalist worlds inspired by Terry Riley and Philip Glass, as repetition and monotony are key elements in their music, being employed through loops of guitar, keyboard, and vintage drum machines.

GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA Azioni/Reazioni 1967-1969 4CD/DVD BOX
The year 2007 saw one of the most remarkable findings in the long treasure-hunting history of Die Schachtel: the complete set of recordings of the early manifestation (1967-1969) of one of the most legendary improv group of all time, the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Rescued by the private archives of Walter Branchi, one of the original founding members -- alongside Franco Evangelisti, Ennio Morricone, Ivan Vandor, Roland Kayn, Egisto Macchi, Mario Bertoncini, and John Heineman -- the tapes were then restored in their entirety. Only a part of them were published in a CD-only boxset in an edition of 500, titled Azioni 1967-1969, which also featured a DVD with the original film Nuova Consonanza shot by Theo Gallher during the rehearsal and concert that the group held on March 19th and 20th, 1967, at the Galleria d'arte Moderna in Rome. Spanning from free-jazz to total abstract noise to wild electronic sounds, their music was -- and remains -- one of the most dynamic, original, and uncompromising expression of a period defined by intense experimentation and musical bravery, anticipating experiments to come in years following. Or, to put it simple, "They were utterly unique," as per the words that John Zorn, who expressively wrote for this edition. To mark the ten-year anniversary of its original release, Die Schachtel present Azioni/Reazioni 1967-1969, the complete cycle of improvisations -- which includes thirteen additional, never before published pieces -- taken from the original tapes. Remastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.Available in three versions. All versions include a 64-page, sewn-bound, LP-size book in English and Italian, complete with essays, memories shared by the group, a new article by Valentina Bertolani exploring in detail the techniques of the group, a chronology, a collection of original reviews by Maurizio Farina, and a set of unpublished black-and-white photos of the group playing in Venice's Teatro Della Fenice in 1968, taken from the archives of the Venice Biennale. All versions also include a DVD (PAL 5.1 audio - region free) with the original film Nuova Consonanza shot by Theo Gallher. CD version includes four CDs, DVD, and book -- edition of 300

The Revenge takes the time to provide an "in yer face" four-tracker of proper club tracks. "Grit" attends to easy-going disco grooves, with plenty of shake and soul it's overflowing with good-mood energy. "Never Learn" offers a glimpse of the darker end of The Revenge's spectrum: subby toms rumble, tweaked-out synths bleep, and slide-and-delayed key stabs shift the party into smoke-hazed, underground rave mode. "Krokodille" brings that bass n' electro gritty booming sound! The acidic lead wraps around sturdy drums.

ASTRAL TV Chrystal Shores LP
Astral TV is a new project from Causa Sui synth- and electronics-wiz Rasmus Rasmussen and fellow inner-space traveler Keith Canisius. On Chrystal Shores, they create fluctuating aural landscapes, ranging from subtle and earthy, to celestial and downright paranormal. Inspired in part by classic synth-scores, vintage European "kosmische", and modern drone, the duo has created the soundtrack for a heady, sonic trip. Like with the best new age music, these sounds can provide solace and regenerative energies in the listener, but ultimately the moods the duo creates are too open and ambiguous to be neatly categorized. The bright analog synths and delicate Stratocaster notes occasionally conjures images of rushing water, slowly passing cumulus and weightless, orbiting satellites. But there are more mysterious undercurrents in this music as well, periodically pulling it into peculiar, hypnagogic realms where ghostly digital presences awake. Chrystal Shores is awash in layers of tonal perfection, and while it constantly evolves, there's a unified feel to each of its gorgeous vinyl sides.

HEATH BROTHERS, THE Marchin' On! LP
Everland Jazz present a reissue of The Heath Brothers' Marchin' On!, originally released in 1976. "This obscure and difficult to find LP is the Heath Brothers' debut album and is considered to be their best. Marchin' On! is unquestionably a masterpiece and is a much sought-after album. With its wealth of riffs, it is much appreciated by samplers and has been sampled by various contemporary artists. It was originally released in 1976 on Strata-East, a label at the time co-owned by Stanley Cowell. The album flows fluidly, meticulously in a warm rich blend with the four part 'Smilin' Billy Suite' being a tour de force on its own. All suites have the same anchor in melody but each branches out to its own distinctive song varying from relaxed to light to dramatic and upbeat. The Heath Brothers was formed in 1975 by brothers Jimmy, Percy, Albert Heath and the much celebrated pianist Stanley Cowell in Philadelphia. The band continued later on with the brothers and alternate new members, with at one point the very talented 'Mtume' who is Jimmy Heath's son, joining." --Rachel Kinoti Licensed by Strata-East Recordings.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Izipho Zam (My Gifts) LP
Everland Jazz present a reissue of Pharoah Sanders's Izipho Zam (My Gifts), originally released in 1973. "Popular and increasingly in demand, Izipho Zam (My Gifts) falls into the 'rare' category among record collectors and is a gift to fans of master Pharoah Sanders. This demand is partially galvanized by the fact that 'Prince Of Peace' has become an inspirational mine to hip hop artists and is much loved by samplers. Izipho Zam is Pharoah Sander's third album, initially recorded in January 1969, it was originally released on the Strata-East label in 1973. On Izipho Zam, Sanders and his band take you on a journey into another world providing an amazing experience! Passionate, intense and free, Sanders saxophone especially, is exquisite, pouring out its soul telling a story of its own. Hailed by peers as the best tenor saxophonist in the world, Pharoah Sanders is a legend in jazz music. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of free jazz and is the mentor of jazz giant, saxophonist Robert Stewart. Born in 1940 into a musical family as Farell Sanders in Arkansas, he first played the clarinet before switching to tenor saxophone in high school. After high school, he moved to California to study music and art. In 1961, Sanders moved to New York where he often played gigs with a number of free jazz dignitaries including Billy Higgins, Sun Ra and Don Cherry. His name 'Pharoah' was given to him by Sun Ra, who was his bandleader then. It was during one of these gigs that he met John Coltrane who became his mentor. While playing with Coltrane, Sanders inevitably rose to prominence due to his very distinctive tenor saxophone sound." --Rachel Kinoti Licensed by Strata-East Recordings.

"I'd put one track in place and instead of searching through existing music to find the track to follow it, I'd just make an entirely new one. The tracks on here pull from very diverse ends of the spectrum of music that I like and make." Packaged in bespoke slipcase containing die-embossed tin.

MALHEIROS, SABRINA Clareia CD
Having made her mark on Brazil's rich musical legacy with three best-selling albums to date, Rio's original nu-bossa queen returns with a tour de force of golden-era Brazilian soul music. From the spiritual swing of the early pioneers of modern samba, to the dizzying hedonism of Brazil's eighties disco/boogie craze, Clareia is a life-affirming journey through the rich and varied sounds of Sabrina Malheiros. For her most up-lifting and danceable album to date, Sabrina has (as always) enlisted her father Alex Malheiros -- bassist of samba jazz-funk legends Azymuth -- and visionary London based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom), son of Incognito's Bluey. With her debut album Equilibria (2005), Sabrina arrived on a wave of instant acclaim. Sabrina's innovative nu-bossa sound would continue on her sophomore album 2008's New Morning (FARO 131CD), declared the "best album of summer 2008" by Evening Standard, before 2011's Dreaming (FARO 161CD/LP). Six years on, Sabrina returns with Clareia. "It means to clear, light, brighten or illuminate, which, after seeing Brazil and the rest of the world go through some very difficult times, is exactly what the writing of this album brought to my life." Packed out with high-octane swinging samba-soul, like the title-track and "Salve O Mar", the album also features some bottom-heavy Brazilian boogie cuts, like rejoicing album opener "Celebrar" which harks back to some of Marcos Valle's cult '80s disco output, and "Sol Ceu E Mar", a Tania Maria-esque future classic of scorching Latin-funk. Mellower moments are found in "Em Paz", on which Sabrina's beguiling harmonies find an anchor in the rhythmic acoustic guitar of Ze Carlos', who Sabrina heralds as being "the best guitarist I have ever worked with". Azymuth's keyboardist Kiko Continentino's deft Rhodes, piano, organ, and synth playing, add ever more textures of distinctly Brazilian brilliance throughout, while tropical brass and flute arrangements on cool bossa-jazz movers "Vai Maria" and "Sandore", come from Brazilian saxophone legend Leo Gandleman, a man who has worked with everyone from Gal Costa to Gilberto Gil. The rhythm section combines Daniel Maunick's seamless drum programming and the organic polyrhythms of Brazilian percussion legend Jakare, all punctuated by Alex Malheiros's inimitable (occasionally slapped) jazz-funk bass, giving the album its irresistibly danceable pulse. Clareia is an inter-generational masterclass of Brazil's soulful spectrum, led by a pioneering voice of today's scene on the very top of her game.

WILSON & THE BLIND DATES, GARY Live At CBGB LP
"Recorded on a trip to the East Coast in August 1979, this album documents Gary Wilson's semi-triumphant return to his home base. Raised in Endicott NY, Gary moved out to San Diego after recording a series of records that would eventually create his legend. We have been fortunate enough to reissue three of these albums: 1974's Another Galaxy by the Gary Wilson Trio (FTR 232LP); 1977's You Think You Really Know Me (FTR 236LP); and the 2003 comp Forgotten Lovers (FTR 065LP); as well as adding a newly discovered abstraction to the early Wilson canon: Music for Piano (FTR 192LP). In August 1979, You Think... was the primary record for which Gary was known, and about half the material here is drawn from that masterpiece. The rest of the songs are in a similar mode -- prog-damaged lounge music powered by deep obsessions and ass-wide hooks, presented amidst truly bizarre stage elements. What's extra weird about this set is how rockin' the Blind Dates make the stuff sound. The band, although San Diego-based, was actually a bunch of NY State-expats Gary had played with before, whose westward drift has proceeded his own. And CBGB was one of the few clubs at which Wilson's music had been welcome from '77 on, so it really was a homecoming. Recorded through the board, the sonics are great, the music is mesmerizing . . . At the end of side two, someone intones, 'Blind Dates rule.' And if you don't agree by that point, you are a goddamn square. Be gone." --Byron Coley, 2017

SEX TIDE Possession Sessions LP
"Third record, following a pair of amazing 12" near-LPs, by this Columbus howitzer. On their debut, Flash Fuck (A Wicked Company, 2013), they were a trio, but they subsequently dropped a guitarist. By the time they cut Vernacular Splatter (Superdreamer, 2015), they has found their true shape as a duo. With Aurelie on drums and vox, and Chris Corbin on guitar, they had pared their shit down to a tight-packed near-perfect two-person howl. For Possession Sessions they have retained that format, although legendary producer Mike Rep can't keep from making his guitar a deep deep part of the mix. And by hooking their braying sonic mule to Rep's stark, chopped production aesthetics, Sex Tide've created a sound that is naught but balling. All the shards that were present in their work earlier -- Gibson Bros., Cramps, Dead Moon, Pussy Galore, Churchmice, etc. -- have been compacted into a rough spew of concrete garbage rock that will have your ass spinning in its own special grave. Only quibble is that I'm not sure how much I've managed to wallow in the specifics of each song yet, since the whole thing flows wobbling and seamless, like a lost record by a band you wished had existed. Grubbiness of this particular style always initially seems like it should be roll-off-a-log easy. The chords are so basic, the thumping so primitive, the voices so devoted to unknown tongues, you'd imagine any monkey could do something similar. But man, it ain't easy. You can listen to a couple hundred records in this vein and maybe they'll all sound pretty good ('cause the style is so perfectly suited to R&R barbarians), but it's rare to hear anyone do it as well as this. Sex Tide's first couple of records are dazzlers, but this one goes way beyond that. And I'm betting it will stand up as an unparalleled booze party soundtrack for many years to come. So buy two. You're definitely gonna fuck up your first copy." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

ABER, SHLOMI Under Two Worlds 12"
Shlomi Aber's first outing for Figure sees the now Barcelona-based artist drawing on his many influences to deliver a tastefully rounded three-tracker. "Under Two Worlds" grooves subtly along a funky acid riff, while anthemic synths longingly recall bygone moments of grandeur. Paced only at half-time and drenched in dubby reverb, the weighing beats of "Rumbles" engage with delicately shaped sounds for some seriously spaced-out head nods. "Matrix" is a tightly woven mesh of machinery insides, which Aber nevertheless manages to channel into a fairly straight- forward kinetic energy.

On "The City That Drowned", there's bliss, sun, warmth, heat -- all painted bright with skyrocketing masterful synths over very neat and dry bass. Laid back and somehow dreamy, the whole EP catches you by the ear and lingers on, but then there's so much dedicated kick and an almost ecstatic groove in each track. "Never" and "Through The Valley" add on to where the title song just left and give this three-track EP so much perfectly arranged strength.

SOUL SUGAR Chase The Light CD
Hailing from the hills of Montmartre, Paris, the man behind Soul Sugar, Guillaume "Gee" Metenier, is regarded as one of Europe's most prolific keyboard players. His passion for the Hammond B3 has led him to study under the guidance of legendary jazz master Dr. Lonnie Smith. The heavily vintage sound is no coincidence, as other classic keyboards like the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, or Minimoog round out his studio arsenal. His influences include a vast heritage of soul and jazz greats such as Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Booker T, Art Neville, or reggae legends Jackie Mittoo and Augustus Pablo. "Gee" was an integral part of electronic outfit, Seven Dub, which gained certain notoriety in the emerging French scene in the late '90s, releasing a number of singles and albums as well as remixes for artists such as Femi Kuti, King Tubby vs. Horace Andy, and Sly & Robbie, to name a few. As a musician, Guillaume has collaborated with the likes of The Last Poets, Alain Bashung, Kid Loco, Grant Phabao, Gizelle Smith, The Mighty Mocambos, Blundetto, and many more. He also released a handful of notable singles as Soul Sugar, such as "Ritual", "East Of The River Nile", and "Why Can't We Live Together", and an album called Nothing But The Truth (2009). The latest outing from Soul Sugar, Chase The Light, is a fusion of roots reggae, psychedelic soul, and funk grooves, showcasing heavy instrumentals and powerful songs. Recorded in France and Kingston, Jamaica with Yvo Abadi on drums, drummer dubmaster Jahno, and guitarist extraordinaire Thomas Naim, with vocals by Courtney John, who's falsetto stylings and lyrical poetry features on two tracks (one including a special appearance by Dr. Lonnie Smith) and Leonardo Carmichael, over a heavy riddim revision of the classic "Why Can't We Live Together". The analog production delivers solidly, taking no prisoners and keeping the groove alive, the whole collection of tracks simply rocks... Chase The Light brings together a bombastic blend of timeless sounds, highest level of cool for impeccable taste. CD version comes with bonus dub versions of all the tracks.

GREENSPAN AND TARAVAL Greenspan And Taraval LP
A strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label Brain records, part Hyperdub techno haze and synth wormholes, with spectacular sound design that has banged at Berghain and sound-tracked winter night drives. Jeremy Greenspan is known mainly for his work with Junior Boys and Jessy Lanza. Taraval is a longtime touring member of Caribou, but both have released several 12" and EPs of electronic exploration over the past few years. Inspired by synthesizer minimalists like JD Emmanuel, Cluster, and John Carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences, but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. The idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of Pearson Sound or Actress. The cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the Hamilton, Ontario area where the album was recorded. Each of the five tracks were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. The recording was done completely off-the-floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact. As this release might appeal to synthesizer hobbyists and enthusiasts, it seemed appropriate to compile a list of the instruments used in the original recordings: ARP Odyssey, Pioneer Toraiz SP-16, Eurorack Modular System, Roland JX8P, DSI Tempest, Simmons SDS-8, Roland SH101, Roland Jupiter 6 Yamaha CS50, Oberheim OB-XA.

Orlando is a producer who places emotion at the heart of his output. "My work explores themes of landscape and environment and a constant longing for the unobtainable," he explains. The Tide That Moves Me EP functions around these core threads, with the hopeful, new-age pop of the title-track, the soft, melody-rich dancehall of "Cyaa Done" featuring new-school Jamaican vocalist Nemesis, and the glistening, wistful electronica of "The Smoke Descends". The shimmering "Sensory Deprivation Tank" is a track that comes alive with sporadic drum bursts, giving the EP mettle for the dance.

His first ever solo release presents him at his best - two orchestral pieces as a definite manifesto of monumental monochromatic environments, both in Bakla's favorite diptych form. KAUDERS In Another Land Pt. 1 LP
Kauders on In Another Land Pt. 1 "In Another Land Pt. I is the first part of a planned trilogy. It is more or less electronic music, generated through long processes of editing and sampling. It's experimental in terms of that its shape and its meaning were not planned, were unclear during its creation and still now are not evident, but somehow hard to reveal. It is based on a strict concept, which could be very well explained, but the composer decided not to do. Instead of that, it is full of hints. It's not a riddle, it's just an invitation to listen closely and carefully. And an invitation to think, to reflect, or to imagine if you might hear something which is worth doing so. Probably this music heralds nothing." One-sided LP.

Double LP version. Edition of 500. Helmut on Our Walls: "After only three short years, my second album Our Walls is out. It comes clad in vinyl, polycarbonate, bits, and bytes and I'm very happy and relieved to finally let go of this one. The cores of its ten/eleven (CD/2LP) tracks were developed on a loop pedal at home. Lyrics spun here and there. Almost all of them are trying to extract levels of meaning from an ever-changing knot of emotions. They take their time -- ranging between three-minutes-forty to thirteen-minutes-fifty-seven -- to clinically isolate, examine, and name the elementary building blocks constituting the knot. Our Walls is about the ups-and-downs of your everyday-mercilessly-hopeless love relationship, about staying mild when things get rough, fabulous metaphors, childish self-defense mechanisms, the burning space in between words and our very personal walls that have so far always kept us safe." Double LP version includes an extra track featuring Camera.

VA Sprigs Of Time: 78s From The EMI Archive 2LP
2017 repress. Originally released in 2008. This is the third in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring the earliest 78s held in the EMI Hayes Archive. Honest Jon's spent two years delving through more than 150,000 78 records in the temperature-controlled steel vaults of EMI's Archive in Hayes, Middlesex. An eccentric survey of the Hayes shelves, Sprigs Of Time is a thirty track compilation featuring material recorded between 1903 and 1957, everywhere from England (Percy Grainger's recording of the title song, sung by Joseph Taylor in 1908) to Japan (the bewilderingly beautiful "Seigaiha", by the Japanese Imperial Palace Band, five years earlier). Organ rolls from Georgia run alongside Tamils impersonating motorized transport, and rumba from Beirut; '40s fado sits next to the songs of Bengali beggars. As with the other Hayes releases, all tracks have been restored at Abbey Road and are beautifully presented here with extensive contemporary photographs. There are recognizable names (Joseph Taylor, the incomparable Fairuz, Mighty Sparrow and an uncredited Rubén González, singing lead vocals on "Rumba Negra") and extraordinary oddities (Vengopal Chari's rather unfunny "Laughing" and the peculiarly affecting hand bells of "Gas All Clear"). Taken out of the library and put back on the turntable, every track here is remarkable; every one worth the saving. Also features: G.U. Hsu, Gamelan Gong, Rizeli Kemenceci Sadik, Ochieng Wa Odinga, Sacasas, Jean Mpia, Jonuzi Me Shoket, Fernando Vilches & Ramon Montoya, Cliff Edwards, Benodini Dassi, Imperial Palace Band, Mr. Ero, Fatma Ben Meddah, Noubar Bey & Party, Ben Simmons, Cantonese Opera, Sam Mayo, Fernando Farinha, Gopal Chunder Singh Roy, Fatma El Chameya Sudaneya, Surat Band (Mr. Razak's), Si Said Ben Ahmed, Malijo & Party, Sexteto Habanero, and A.R.P.. WILSON, DELROY Here Come The Heartaches CD
Delroy Wilson, the original "Cool Operator", was also known to many as "Teacher". A title given to him as he unselfishly taught the up-and-coming singers, including Dennis Brown, the art and delivery of singing technique. Delroy's rich tone to his voice added a depth to any song that he chose to sing. Delroy Wilson (b.1948 Kingston, Jamaica) began his musical career at the school that was Coxsone Dodd's studio One label. After a brief stop in 1969, which saw Delroy working for producer Sonia Pottinger's Tip Top label, he was producing such hits including "It Hurts" and "Put Yourself In My Place". The 1970s saw Delroy Wilson's arrival at Bunny "Striker" Lee's door and what would result in a winning formula, scoring hit after hit. It is from this great period in Delroy's career that Kingston Sounds have compiled this selection of killer tunes, cut with the drum and bass rhythm kings themselves, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Such classics as "Who Care", "Can I Change Your Mind", "Get Ready", "You Must Believe Me", and the timeless title track to this collection, "Here Come The Heartaches". An album of great tracks cut with "The Hitmaker from Jamaica", Bunny Lee and his team. A match made in heaven. CD version includes four bonus tracks.

Drug Dilling EP offers first new material from The/Das on the label since 2013's Outfashioned (LAD 010EP). Fabian Fenk and Philipp Koller's latest EP is the result of playful and pure studio sessions, during which they aimed to capture the often-overlooked club-friendly side of their project. The breakbeats of "Top Vibes" come as a welcomed surprise, while "Holy Rollers" pairs wobbling synth pads with a vocal cameo by DJ Tennis. The standout title-track recalls hazy after-party moments. Detroit stalwart DJ Bone delivers a focused reinterpretation, backing expertly-sampled organ takes and flanged vocal lines in an enticing bed of Afro-Cuban rhythms.

BEACH BULLIES, THE We Rule The Universe CD
"From 1975 -1979, things were going well for James A. Smith, musically speaking. He was writing prolifically, getting encouragement from his contemporaries -- namely, his friend Robyn Hitchcock of The Soft Boys -- and his band, The Containers, had recorded some promising demos and were playing regular live gigs. But, by January of 1980, The Containers disbanded suddenly, and James was on his own. 'Sod it!' he thought, and, rather than waste time lamenting the situation, he plotted a new course as a solo artist. Armed only with his guitar, a drum machine and his flatmate's girlfriend, Jill Fricker, to sing backup vocals, James forged ahead with his new project: The Beach Bullies. The Beach Bullies somehow manage to sound simultaneously classic and exceptionally ahead of their time. Fans of kindred spirits from the same era, such as The Television Personalities, Young Marble Giants, and yes, The Soft Boys, will find much to admire in The Beach Bullies. On the other hand, their alternating vocals, stripped-down aesthetic and minimal arrangements will also appeal to fans of artists who would emerge much later, such as The Vaselines, The Pastels, Shop Assistants and Small Factory. In their brief time together, The Beach Bullies recorded one full-length LP, We Rule The Universe, on Musclebound Records in 1980, along with a series of demos, and some rough mixes intended for a follow-up release that never came to fruition. These comprehensive additional recordings are all available as digital downloads with purchase of this LP. Original copies of the LP sell for more than $40 on the second-hand market, and the bonus tracks have never been released previously. The LP insert also includes previously unreleased photos of James and Jill from the time of the recordings, along with witty liner notes from James himself, giving the full scoop on how this unique record came to be in the first place. Available again for the first time since 1981 on vinyl and for the first time ever on CD."

CONTAINERS, THE Self-Contained LP
"It's difficult to miss James A Smith, he's about 6'7" for one thing. His music is packed with hooks and one-liners that are hard to forget. Thirty-eight years after the songs on this album were recorded, they are being released into a world that is finally ready to receive them. When he moved to London in 1977, you would often see James at the Marquee club, especially if Wire were playing, or at the Roundhouse for Elvis Costello, Split Enz, or the Buzzcocks. A couple of years later you might have caught him on stage during The Containers brief period of gigging. He was back in 1980, solo mostly, but called The Beach Bullies; maybe you saw him at the Hope & Anchor... or even supporting an early incarnation of the Thompson Twins. Like so many keen young musicians, he really worked at it. He tried longer and harder than many, but the breaks didn't come, apart from one solitary flirtation with vinyl. The 1980 release, We Rule The Universe, by The Beach Bullies, delightfully augmented by singer Jill Fricker, was released thanks to Armageddon Records. His astringent wit-inflected songs were stripped back to their minimal core. A simple drum machine, an electric guitar, no frills -- not even any bass! It picked up a couple of encouraging reviews, found a tiny audience of fans, and then went to sleep for a long, long time. It wasn't always like that. The Containers had played many of the same songs, but their versions had the swagger of a gang instead of pared down charm, along with distinctive dual male/female lead vocals, a full rhythm section, and the encouragement (and even participation) of Robyn Hitchcock in his full Soft Boys majesty. They had the good fortune to record the demos that make up the bulk of this album at Spaceward Studios, in the center of Cambridge, an innovative sixteen track that hosted Gary Numan, the Raincoats, and the Soft Boys at around the same time. What came out of the sessions was greater than the sum of the parts, on both their visits to the Victoria Street basement. For several decades the tapes either were missing or on unplayable formats, but a couple of years ago copies of the sessions showed up on cassettes carefully preserved by bass player Adrian 'Hots' Foster. A quick scrub up, and one session was on YouTube. The boss of Captured Tracks heard the session, and very soon James A Smith's musical renaissance, and recognition for The Containers' and The Beach Bullies was on its way!"

STEELE QUARTET, COLIN Diving For Pearls: Jazz Interpretations Of The Pearlfishers Songbook CD
Marina Records present one of their most unusual and best releases yet: The music of The Pearlfishers, one of Marina's most beloved acts, gets the royal jazz treatment, with exciting new arrangements by the Colin Steele Quartet. Continuing a great jazz tradition -- like Miles Davis with Porgy & Bess (1958) and Chet Baker with Plays The Best Of Lerner & Loewe (1959) -- Diving For Pearls is dedicated to the work of one composer, David Scott of The Pearlfishers. Colin Steele from Edinburgh, one of UK's leading jazz trumpeters, adds his very own sound and interpretations to Scott's songs and transports them into a brand new musical territory. Steele has a long association with The Pearlfishers since he appeared as a studio musician on many of their albums. Steele: "I'd played on many sessions with The Pearlfishers before, and have a similar taste in music with David Scott, with our shared love of Burt Bacharach, Beatles and Beach Boys. I was impressed by the depth of the beautiful melodies and could immediately hear my own voice playing these melodies -- specifically using the 'Miles Davis sound' of the Harmon mute." The album kick starts with the joyous blast of "The Bluebells" -- originally appearing on The Pearlfishers' album Up With The Larks (MA 069CD, 2007). Colin Steele makes it swing and rise just beautifully. His warm, melodic playing and tone is also a perfect match for the wonderful "Everything Works Out", one of Scott's most enduring songs. "The Vampires Of Camelon" rides on a great piano riff reminiscent of Vince Guaraldi -- brilliantly played by Dave Milligan, Steele's long-time collaborator, who also arranged the album. "Ice Race" -- from the Pearlfishers' seasonal album A Sunflower At Christmas (MA 063CD/LP, 2006) -- gets propelled to new heights by the powerhouse drumming of Alyn Cosker. "Gone In The Winter" is a superb showcase for the exceptional deep-toned, warm double-bass playing of Calum Gourlay. The piano intro of "The Umbrellas Of Shibuya" quite fittingly recalls the stripped-down beauty of Ryuichi Sakamoto. And then Steele breezes in with the fantastic melody and his imaginative playing. The album comes to a perfect close with the blissful coda "Swan Dreams", originally from Sky Meadows (2003). Diving For Pearls was recorded in just one day -- like many of the greatest jazz albums -- at Scotland's famous Castlesound Studios. Masterfully engineered by Stuart Hamilton.

KUNIYUKI Newwave Project CD
In February 2015, Japanese producer and sound designer Kuniyuki Takahashi, sometimes known as Koss, released the EP Newwave Project #2 (MUSIQ 183EP), a record that tapped some roots of his musical education: new wave, German electro punk from bands like Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, EBM from acts like Front 242, as well as industrial music, all styles Kuniyuki claims are his "favorite music". Nearly two years after his first Newwave Project EP, he drops an album that is leaning towards his musical love from the past. Compared to his former work, which was rooted in worlds of classic, jazz, house, ambient, and electronic song-writing, his new tunes are full of melodic drifts and rhythmical shifts. As usual, all is loaded with tones and rhythms straight from the heart that filter and modulate human emotions without losing their natural source. To get a sound that is fresh but still leaning to the '80s, he used some old synthesizers, like Roland Jupiter 8, Juno 60, Korg MS 20, and an old tape echo machine, but he also used newer instruments, like the Roland AIRA. His modular synthesizers talk too. Sampled voices, and other alienated sound sources of unknown origin, inject otherworldly atmospheres into his new tunes. It is also evident that he is a fine instrumentalist, as Kuniyuki also plays piano, percussion, and flute on the album, if he felt their warm sound was needed for his freely grooving tracks. Some dance in house or techno outfits; other slam like a mix of funk and EBM. Tunes like "Puzzle" or "Body Signal" are twisted treasures that bemuse deeply. In-between, you hear the echoes of cosmic spheres, the darkness of the Cold War days, and some bewitching tribal jungle vibes; A new, moving, unorthodox, yet catchy side of Kuniyuki Takahashi. It is not totally novel to him, as he already released some industrial, EBM, and electronic with the project DRP. But for his listeners that know him for detailed house, jazz, and classic, or even his collaborations, the Newwave Project sheds a light on a different artistic side of Takahashi. It is diversified, with many rhythmical and atmospheric turns, but stays stirring and compelling throughout. A true new wave, formed, played in, and envisioned, with a view on the past that was filtered through the now while feeling the future. Cover art by Swiss artist Augustin Rebetez.

RUSH, JANA Pariah CD
Back with the heat, Chicago native DJ Jana Rush kicks off Objects Limited's 2017 releases with her debut album Pariah. Jana Rush received attention for her mind-bending drum acrobatics on 2016's MPC 7635 EP, also released by Objects Limited. Jana started DJing aged just 13, releasing her first record on Dance Mania back in 1996, but having a hiatus from music between 2000-2013. With Pariah, she has created an album rooted in Chicago's footwork sound, but with a myriad of influences, such as jungle, acid, soul, jazz, and house, developing her sound on from MPC 7635. Pariah kicks off with "Midline Shift" whose breathy, clipped erotic vocals intertwine with a pulsing bass and dry 808 rims, creating a shimmering robotic effect. Moving on, the frantic "Beat Maze" confuses the mind with white noise rushes and interlocking snares. Changing the scene, "Divine" is sweetly soporific and charming, a beautiful, almost eerie track. The pace picks right back up with "??? ??", whose warbling jazz clarinets cut into a juke bounce. The stripped back beats of "Break It" give one room to breathe before the croaking bass and distorted acid of "No Fuks Given". "Old Skool" is exactly what you'd expect, its sample syncopated around a feverish rhythm throughout. Both "Rapid Fire" and "Acid Tech 2" are bangers, hitting you deep in that sweet spot. Jana brings it back down with "CPU"'s computer noises and sub-bass hits. "Chill Mode" gives time for reflection after all that fire, but it's no ambient track?there's still that Chi-Town vibe. Pariah finishes with "Frenetic Snare" whose Amen breaks will have Brits thinking of jungle, but it's a different beast altogether.

THOMAS, PAT The Elephant Clock of Al Jazari LP
Recorded live at OTO in May 2015, The Elephant Clock Of Al Jazari comprises four typically genre-defying and sonically dexterous pieces from one of the UK's best pianists. Pat Thomas began playing piano at the age of eight. He studied classical music and reggae was an early interest. Thomas was inspired to take up jazz after seeing legendary pianist Oscar Peterson on television. By 1979, Thomas was performing seriously as an improviser. In 1980, he became a member of Oxford-based group Ghosts with Pete McPhail and Matt Lewis. He has worked with Mike Cooper, Jimmy Carl Black, Thurston Moore, Mats Gustafsson, Evan Parker, Alan Silva, John Zorn, and more. Pat Thomas received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers in 2014. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi. Edition of 500.In Thomas's own words: "The title for this album, was inspired by the incredible automatic water clock invented by Badi' al-Zaman ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari. Al Jazari refers to the fact he was born in Al Jazira which lies between the Tigris and the Euphrates in what is now Northern Iraq. Badi al Zaman means prodigy of the age. He is known by historians of technology as the father of modern robotics. The Elephant Clock at seven meters high is a testament to his engineering genius, it utilizes Greek water raising technology, combined with an Indian elephant, Egyptian phoenix, Arabian figures, Persian carpet and Chinese Dragons celebrating the diversity of cultures in the world. This and other marvels of engineering can be found in his Book of the Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices translated by Donald Hill (Pakistan Hijra Council). Over 50 devices are mentioned. Amongst them the first analog computer, his remarkable Castle Clock, however, the debt the world owes this Muslim genius is found in his remarkable water raising devices, particularly water raising device number '4' where for the first time a crank connecting rod system is used. The crank is considered to be the most important single mechanical device after the wheel, by 1206 this is found fully developed in Jazari`s machines predating Francesco di Giorgio Martini by three centuries. 'For Al Haytham' is dedicated to the great polymath genius who wrote the great book on vision, the first person to give us a true understanding of how we see. 'Lubb' is an Arabic word meaning innermost consciousness whilst to conclude proceedings 'Done' is loosely based on a well-known standard."

FOUNDARS 15 Co-Operation LP
PMG present a reissue of Foundars 15's Co-Operation, originally released in 1977. "After years of gigging around the east Nigerian music scene, Foundars 15 finally hit the jackpot when they recruited legendary bass player, Marshall Udo. Charismatic and confident, Udo immediately energized the band, bringing a new funky and psychedelic vibe as well as a bunch of songs he'd workshopped with the Funkees. The tone of the album is set early. Nek Adirika's searing guitar lick announces 'We Are On The Move', a track that is both funky and determined. 'Co-Operation' is a horn-driven slab of ghetto funk. 'Cool And Good (For Loving)' is a psychedelic wig-out. 'Work To Success' could well be the new-look Foundars 15 manifesto set to music. While Marshall Udo was undoubtedly the catalyst, Co-Operation is very much a group effort. Udo, Sony Enang, Nek Adirika and Ike Peters each provide songs and the musicianship of each player is impeccable. Every track is super-tight and sophisticated. This is the sound of a band that means business. It's also why Co-Operation is widely regarded as one of the great Afro-funk rock albums of all time." --Peter Moore

GOLDFINGER DOE & B.M.S. Let's Dance Together LP
PMG present a reissue of Goldfinger Doe & B.M.S.'s Let's Dance Together, originally released in 1979. "William Onyeabor wasn't the only Nigerian experimenting with synthesizers in the '70s and '80s. Goldfinger Doe was twiddling knobs too, no more so than on Let's Dance Together -- a prime slab of cosmic Afro boogie funk, recorded with legendary percussionist, Mike Umoh (aka B.M.S.) Goldfinger met Umoh playing with Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies. Bass player Bashiru Musa, was a fellow Groovie too, and when the three hit the studio to record Let's Dance Together, the groove was already tight and hot. The title track, 'Let's Dance Together', is an urgent boogie monster, peppered with cosmic synths. 'Funky Africa' is an irresistible floor-filler, driven by the 'funk in the black soil and the soul in the air.' 'Jah Help Us' is a reggae-tinged reworking of the Lord's Prayer, with added squelchy synth. 'B.M.S. Bowl'? It's just an excuse for Umoh to show off his preposterous percussive skills. Goldfinger's extraordinary synth skills are always front and center. They transform 'Jane', providing a humorous commentary in an otherwise straightforward romantic lament, and propel the funkier tracks to become the heartbeat of the album. Let's Dance Together is an Afro funk space ship, fueled up and ready to take off." --Peter Moore

OFFIA, DANNY Funk With Me LP
PMG present a reissue of Danny Offia's Funk With Me, originally released in 1981. "Danny Offia's Funk With Me is a prime slab of Nigerian boogie. Sinewy and urbane, it's the soundtrack of Lagos in the early eighties. The city was awash with oil money, clubs were booming and every night was a party night -- the perfect place for a man with a great voice, a white suit and seductively-clutched packet of B&H Golds. Funk With Me was recorded in London with a crack team of session musicians. Drummer Blair Cunningham was from Memphis and had played with Robert Johnson. Sax player Ray Carless was regarded as the London jazz scene's best-kept secret. Engineer Duncan Bridgeman would go on to work with Duran Duran. Danny Offia brought the songs and the Lagos attitude. 'Funk With Me' is a certified party starter. '10 Years In Love' and 'Weak For You' are sophisticated groovers. 'Sat,Nite (Is A Party Nite)' is guaranteed to get any girl on the dancefloor, while 'Don't Make Me Cry' is smooth enough take her home. Funk With Me is Lagos in an album -- cosmopolitan, sexy and witty with an energy and spirit, all of its own." --Peter Moore

He then passed through the Sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at Treasure Isle, before returning to Studio One with the Eternals, scoring huge hits such as "Stars" and "Queen Of The Minstrel" as the '60s gave way to the '70s. His greatest phase of popularity was then brokered by hit-making producer Bunny Lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the '80s. The 1975 album Dance In A Greenwich Farm was first issued on the Grounation label in the UK. Along with a reworking of "Stars", retitled "The Sun", a reworking of "Queen Of The Minstrel", as "Girl Of My Dreams", and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album also has the boastful "Conquering Gorgon" and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the Gaylads' "No Good Girl", a version of the Heptones' "Why Did You Leave Me" and a killer cut of the Uniques' "Watch This Sound" (based on "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield).

INNER Black Label 12"
Based in Tampere, Finland, Inner finally gets a well-deserved first international release. "Pain" sets the atmosphere as an ice cold blend of futurist RnB and grime with a golden era Timbaland sensibility. "Crystal Ember" furthers this development with equal doses of south London grime melodics and feminine pressure. "Closa" presents a thoroughly warped flex where staccato subs make your eyeballs vibrate as ice-y staccato synths double up. Certified emotional banger "Roll Out" continues the staccato rhythmics as square-wave melodics and hums are accompanied by long detuned grime bass streaks.

ARAGORN Night Is Burning LP
There are few bands who can claim to have built their reputation on one single, but such is the situation for Aragorn, formed in Chesire in 1978. They were one of the first acts to sign to Neat Records as the new wave of British heavy metal erupted. But fate conspired to ensure that they only ever released one single, the killer Black Ice/Noonday (1981), which has definitely become something of a cult 45 among aficionados of the genre. Here it is, along with 12 tracks taken from a then unreleased album from 1982-83. A must for anyone into obscure, '70s styled hard-rock, and early metal. RIYL: New wave of British heavy metal, Angel Witch, Motörhead, Witchfynde, Black Sabbath. Remastered sound; Insert with liner notes and photos.

LOMBARD, CLAUDE Chante LP
LP version. Sommor Records present the first reissue of Claude Lombard's Chante, originally released in 1969. Presented in the original French edition gatefold artwork. Produced by Roland Kluger (Chakachas, Free Pop Electronic Concept), arranged by Willy Albymoor and recorded at the legendary Madeleine Studios in Brussels. Insert with liner notes by pop connoisseur Don Sicalíptico. RIYL: Stereolab, Broadcast, White Noise, Delia Derbyshire, Astrud Gilberto, Roger Webb Sound."If you know the 1968 Eurovision song, or the TV kids cartoons tunes which Claude Lombard sang, it will be hard to believe what's happening there... Beautiful pop songs sung in French by this Belgian maverick (who worked with Luciano Berio) swirling upon wonderful '60s abstract-expressionism orchestrations: chimes and ondes Martenots among lovely dream basslines and organ drifting, with a dreamy use of echoes, reverbs and sometimes electronics. There are incredibly beautiful songs here, and probably one of the unique examples of French songs with really gorgeous, untypical sound work, closer to some UK and US proto-psychedelic orchestration in pop world. It was by the time a complete commercial flop... A shame of course considering the quality of compositions offered here by Claude Lombard herself, who have no shame to feel if one compares the elegance of her work to an inspired and electronic version of Michel Legrand... Any serious fan of Broadcast or Stereolab will fall in love forever with this true secret gem, to say the least... And no need to mention the kaleidoscopic design of the cover, mesmerizing and perfectly illustrating the content. Masterpiece here? Hell yes! And you can forget about the cartoon tunes of your lazy childhood..." --Emmanuel Holterbach

T.A.C. Symphonie Industrielle CD
In 1985, Andrea Azzali and Simon Balestrazzi remained the only members of Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata (T.A.C.). They decided to reconfigure their work around tape manipulation. The two were recording in a studio in Florence and in an intense week, they realized Symphonie Industrielle. With the emergence of this new formation, however, T.A.C. dedicated itself to new projects and live performances, and the album was actually abandoned. Miraculously, the tapes have been recovered, and the result has been restored. Symphonie Industrielle is a splendid piece of concrete music and the most obvious representation of the endless musical search of T.A.C. A pearl that was about to be lost, and finally found again.

Improvisation takes over... free and uncontrollable sounds that tell of an ensemble that was years ahead in European experimental music. PLASTIC FLOWERS Demo 1982-83 CD
Venice 1982, from the ashes of the unstable and ramshackle group Vixinex, Plastic Flowers was born. The band was formed by Torcy, Karl Diane, and Del Frate. The three crystallized a better defined project, more akin to the new Europeanist electronic sound, avoiding the magmatic punk rock played by their previous group without any technical skill. It was thanks to the availability of the new Del Frate instrumentation that PF had a chance to experiment within new musical universes (the studio was equipped with electric pianos and the latest synthesizers, compressors, filters and various delays, drum machines as well as a four-track reel-to-reel recording system). The complex activity of cutting and stitching together during the recording sessions, the over-dubbing of multiple vocals and the massive number of keyboards tracks, precluded the group from any live activity. Due to these actual technical difficulties, the impossibility of performing any concerts, they preferred the studio: a "working desk" without a stage or audience. The trio remained in the shadows. Only two demo tapes bear testimony of their two years of activity: Some Products (1983) and Un Cabaret Folatre (1983).

END, THE Tears In My Eyes (1983-1985) CD
Spittle Records present a compilation titled Tears In My Eyes (1983-1985) focusing on the Italian band The End. "The name was simple and maybe not so original, but very appropriate for a band active in provincial Italy of the early '80s. A band playing British post-punk inspired songs with English lyrics and a focus on man's existential crisis. Nothing to do with gothic or dark as we used to call it in Italy, in fact even if the boys (all under 20 at the time they got together in 1983) liked dressing in black and playing dark atmospheric music, they had little in common with the kind of morbid imagination so typical in the genre. Let's say they were more into Joy Division than Bauhaus, more Factory than 4AD, and definitely more Hacienda than Batcave. The band didn't last long though, just little more than two years, a short but intense period characterized by continuous changes within a total of nine different members (a process aided by the compulsory military service of the time). Thanks to the group's meticulous documentation activity, such kind of works in progress are now summarized in this record that after 30 years from their break up, comes to fix the lack of a proper discography. The band's complete time frame is fully represented by these 70 minutes of unearthed material. In fact if we exclude the four track demo, most of this CD consists of very private and never heard before recordings. I'm very sure that after listening to this music, post-punk aficionados around the world will approve of the group, and this comprehensive document." --Federico Guglielmi, April 2017

From the liner notes: "CALYPSO, the infectious rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean area originated in Trinidad. It is really the musical expression of the Afro- West-Indian population. There are various explanations for the origin of the word 'Calypso', but it is most likely that it stems from the African word 'Kaiso', which means BRAVO. The lyrics (in a dialectic English) and the melody are usually made up at the spur of the moment. The words very often have a double meaning. The topic is sex, but frequently deals with current events of social and political happenings. The rhythms are enticing and therefore popular for dancing." KOLETZKI, OLIVER Grossstadtmarchen LP
Stil Vor Talent present the first vinyl issue of Oliver Koletzki's most successful album Großstadtmärchen, originally released in 2009. With Großstadtmärchen, the Berlin-based techno and house producer created a musically compact album, working together with many different singers: Established artists like Mieze Katz from the German electro-pop outfit MIA., the hot German pop-rock-singer Axel Bosse, indie band Kate Mosh as well as newcomers such as Fran, Pyur, and Juli Holz. The result are ten songs that easily fluctuate between catchy pop tracks, modern house grooves, and '80s synthesizer pop, yet it still maintains Koletzki's very own sound dynamic. Großstadtmärchen, which translates as "The Tale Of The Big City" starts off with "This Is Leisure". Famous pop singer Mieze Katz has put down her sexy voice on a guitar-based song pattern that functions as an ideal introduction into the craziness of the big city tales. Juli Holz's softly whispering voice sings about the dilemmas of love in the big city on "Zuckerwatte", a very fine electro-pop tune. Oliver Koletzki and Axel Bosse board an underground train that takes them around the Berlin U-Bahn system and back. Axel Bosse adds his melancholic voice to this groovy pop anthem and sings about the poetic magic of public transport, while the sounds of the trains lay on top. Of course, Koletzki added some purely instrumental tracks on his album, too: "Kusskompatibel" and "Warschauer Straße" are a journey back to Oliver's first years in Berlin and his love for house music. "Kleines Zwischenspiel" also celebrates the energetic sound of electronic music. Then there is another great shine of bright light with the pop track "Hypnotized" that is already making airwaves on German radio. It features the newcomer singer Fran that turns this track into a wonderful electronic love story -- a catchy pop anthem about the first dance, the first kiss and that special moment when the night turns into day. "Headshaped Box" encapsulates what indie-tronic sounds like in the year 2009: symphonic, melodic and simply unique. On "These Habits" the just seventeen-year-old singer Pyur makes her debut. This down-beat trip hop-groove is a wonderful hit for late summer. Oliver Koletzki remixes "Nimm Mich Mit" by the electronic boy-band Die Raketen. Großstadtmärchen is the logical consequence from two decades of intense musical production. It's a mature, yet still playful pop album that manages to combine many different influences into one harmonious oeuvre. Includes download code.

DE JAER, BAUDOUIN Lucy / Back To Normal 2CD
This double CD release brings together two founding pieces from Baudouin de Jaer: the first volcanic concert of Back To Normal in 1991, and the first concerto of Baudouin de Jaer, "Lucy", performed in 1993. Back To Normal was a collective of visual artists, musicians, and non-musicians. "Lucy" is played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège. In 1993, Baudouin de Jaer wrote his first concerto for violin and orchestra. "Lucy" was premiered by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège under the direction of Georges-Elie Octors. Equipped with two dictaphones, Jaer steps in the dreams of half-sleeps and awakenings. Nestled in a cutting of 15 sections, the recorded ideas then slips the whole in a telescopic sound structure that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège propels the evening of the first in space time. Coordinated by Baudouin de Jaer, the movement Back To Normal (born in Liège, Belgium) gathered, between 1991 and 1996, a dozen artists, painters, sculptors, ironworkers, and some musicians of the Royal Conservatory of Liège. Everyone transmitted their knowledge to others, composed their pieces and directed them. Touring France, Poland, and Switzerland, 80 people participated. The recording here features: Pierre-Etienne Fourré, Slavek Kwi, Jean-Yves Evrard, Eric Sleichim, Yves Kimplaire, Patrick Tillie, Collective Composition, and Eric Sleichim. Baudouin de Jaer studied composition with Philippe Boesmans, Henri Pousseur, and Frederic Rzewski, and at McGill University (Montréal) with Bruce Mather. His works have performed by the following ensembles: Synonymes, Besides, Arditti, Quadro, Stream, Ear Unit, Musiques Nouvelles, Orchestre de Mulhouse, National Korean Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, Timf Seoul Ensemble, Korean Project, Ensemble 21, Ensemble 88. In 2010, he resolved the enigmatic music system of Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli and released a CD called The Heavenly Ladder on Sub Rosa (SR 312CD). In 2010, Baudouin de Jaer was awarded a prize from the National Gugak Center for his gayageum compositions (SR 373CD, 2013). Comes in a six-panel digipak; Includes 20-page booklet.

ZWARTJES Tapes 1 LP
Tapes 1 represents the first ever sound recordings to be released from the archive of cult Dutch film director Frans Zwartjes. The sound is unlike anything you may have heard -- dream-like, disjointed, disturbing, peculiar, sexy, unexpected, and totally unique. Frans Zwartjes is famous for his art-house films. A Dutch underground auteur, his prolific output dates from 1968. A unique talent, Zwartjes produced, directed, and edited his own films (his last work was in 1991), but more importantly he created and improvised the soundtracks too. Zwartjes is still alive today and his large body of work is only now being recognized by a wider, more international crowd, with screenings at the NFT and other important art-house cinemas across the world. The recordings on Tapes 1 were mixed directly from the Zwartjes soundtrack tape archive. They were assembled directly and in real time by Zwartjes archivist Stanley Schtinter and were originally issued in 2014 on cassette, in an edition of 50. Don't bother trying to find one of them. The music, sound, and speech have been put together as two long, seamless sequences; they are dreamlike, unsettling, peculiar, plugged-in, prescient, and unlike any other soundtrack. STONE, CARL Electronic Music From The Seventies And Eighties 3LP
"This 3LP set contains a selection of seven early works by American composer Carl Stone, all previously unpublished except for 'Shing Kee,' which appeared on the 1992 New Albion CD release, Mom's. Notorious, formerly elusive recordings like 'Sukothai,' 'Shibucho,' and 'Dong Il Jang' exemplify how Stone masterfully guided his art through the transition period when New Music exited the loft scene of the 1970s for a stab at commercial presence in the 1980s, satisfying both impulses by fusing his compositional ambition with systems of live performance that were simultaneously pop savvy, commercial suicide, and technologically and aesthetically forward thinking. His live performance practice, documented here in a carefully restored archival recording of 'Kuk Il Kwan' at The Kitchen in 1981, has merged seamlessly with today's computer-driven methods. The earliest works of this collection, 'LIM' and 'Chao Praya,' realized on the Buchla 200, date to the early 1970s while Stone was a student of James Tenney and Morton Subotnick at CalArts, a rare glimpse of Stone working with purely electronic source material. Liner notes by Carl Stone, Jonathan Gold, Richard Gehr, and Marc Weidenbaum accompany on a gatefold sleeve. Download card is included with a digital-only bonus track, 'Unthaitled' from 1978. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker. 'Of the serious composers to come out of 1980s California, Carl Stone is the one who has always performed in nightclubs as well as concert halls, for spiky-haired punks as well as the Ph.D-and-ponytail set -- his brand of electro-acoustic bricolage was probably better known among jazz musicians than it was to the blue-haired Monday Evening Concerts crowd.' --Jonathan Gold, from the liner notes."

PEGA MONSTRO Casa De Cima LP
LP version. Comes in a reverse board sleeve; Includes lyric insert and download card. Pega Monstro is the Lisbon, Portugal sister duo of Julia Reis (drums) and Maria Reis (guitar). They share the same birthday but are not twins, and they have always lived in Lisbon, Portugal. Maria and Julia resolved became a duo in 2010, focusing on their intuitive sense of harmony and expressionistic dream-punk sound. They return to Upset The Rhythm, following Alfarroba (UTR 072CD/LP, 2015), with their third album entitled Casa De Cima, which translates as "Upper House". On the first song "Ó Miguel", Pega Monstro shown that they have grown in confidence and vision, they sound compelling and assured and let the song unfold in its own leisure. The stunning "Partir A Loiça" follows with its stammering rhythms and soaring, swirling vocals. The song's title, literally "break all the dishes", is a saying in Portugal meaning to shake things up and exceed expectations. Pega Monstro constantly reach for something beyond plain comprehension, stretching songs to their limits before collapsing them back into new, more interesting forms. The Portuguese poet and writer Fernando Pessoa had a similar mutable approach to his work. Pega Monstro recite one of Pessoa's poems called "O Moinho De Café" during the third act of their epic, yet romantic track "Cachupa". The track is a good example of how natural and spontaneous Pega Monstro can sound. The second half of the album starts over with the enthusiastic track "Pouca Terra", all racing chords and clouds of cymbal, building to a beautiful textural density and ecstatic finale. Pega Monstro nurture their songs, letting them follow tangents, take risks, or even fall over. There's a sense of sisterly oneness and provision apparent in their music allowing Pega Monstro to sound instinctual, yet awash with ideas. "Fado Da Estrela Do Ouro" and "Sensação" are decidedly delicate in manner, drawing on themes of equal restlessness and wistfulness. "Sensação" even concludes with the sisters singing the traditional Portuguese folk air "At the door of the holy souls, God knocks every hour". Finally, "Odemira" draws Casa De Cima to a close in triumphant style. Drums and guitar chase each other feverishly, galloping ever faster before breaking into calmer clearings of hushed vocal reverie and serene falsetto. Casa De Cima was recorded through September 2016 by Leonardo Bindilatti.

DUCKETT Gannets For Guano EP 12"
Freerotation resident Duckett lands on Facta and K-LONE's Wisdom Teeth label with a new four-tracker. Duckett's malfunctioning rhythms and spoon-bent melodies occupy that sweet spot between order and chaos that the label has always done its best to occupy. More so than ever, Gannets For Guano EP sees Duckett exploring far-out territories. The melodies are psychedelic; the rhythms are disjointed and swinging -- but always keeping just the right side of chaotic.
