PATRICK AND THE BARITONE SAXOPHONE RETINUE, PAT Sound Advice (2017 Repress) LP
2017 repress of Art Yard's 2015 reissue. Originally released in 1977 by Sun Ra's El Saturn label. Includes printed inner sleeve. As composer, bandleader, and full-time member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Pat Patrick was a visionary musician whose singular contribution to the jazz tradition has not yet been fully recognized. As well as holding down the baritone spot in the Arkestra for 35 years, Patrick played flute and alto, composed in both jazz and popular idioms, and was a widely respected musician, playing with Duke Ellington, Eric Dolphy, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane, with whom he appeared on Africa/Brass (1961). But he is best known for his crucial contributions to key Sun Ra recordings including Angels and Demons at Play (1967), Jazz in Silhouette (1959), and The Nubians of Plutonia (1967), among dozens of others. But as a bandleader, Patrick only released one LP -- the almost mythical Sound Advice, recorded with his Baritone Saxophone Retinue, a unique gathering of baritone saxophone masters including Charles Davis and René McLean. Sound Advice is a deep-hued exploration of this special instrument, a lost masterpiece of Arkestrally-minded Ellingtonia on which higher adepts of the lower cosmic tones are heard in rare conference. Unissued since original release, this unique jazz masterpiece now returns to the limelight. Released in collaboration with the Pat Patrick estate. Remastered and restored sound. Liner notes by scholar and musician Bill Banfield.

Broadrick from industrial-metal act Godflesh (not to mention Jesu), as well as Monolake, Crowhurst, Ramleh, Child Bite, and many others. PRIMITIVE TRUST Fallen Down EP 12"
Fallen Down EP is the second EP from Tee Mango and Will Saul's Primitive Trust project, featuring a remix by Shanti Celeste. The title track weaves percussive shuffles and vocal refrains with glowing synths, whilst colorful melodic layers and resonating vocal stabs armor the choppy live drums of "Day One". Dekmantel regular Shanti Celeste does what she does best with her remix of "Fallen Down" in building a rich, hypnotic groove that steadily develops with intricacy and depth, whilst "Big Tracky Disco Tool" is exactly that. FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS, LEE Coming Home/Precious Love 7"
"As Lee is out on the road spreading the love to crowds across Europe we decided to press up another undeniable two sider off the instant classic Special Night album. Another must have for the DJs... Side A is 'Coming Home', Lee's incredible take on working, how we get through it, and why we do it. He sings to his wife a story a lot of people can relate to, working all day looking forward to coming home to his family. The Expressions provide the perfect feel good backing to this midtempo masterpiece with beautiful horn arrangements, catchy background vocals, and a guitar riff as catchy as the chorus. Side B's 'Precious Love' is the perfect example of the song writing and arranging prowess the producers (Leon Michels & Tommy Brenneck) and the band have honed over the years. Catchy from the intro, this love song keeps the dance floor and holds up next to the classics. Play this for your precious love."

MANEK/MARTINA QUAKE, TARQUIN Locks On Our Doors Not On Our Hearts LP
Locks On Our Doors Not On Our Hearts utilizes EMS VCS3, Oberheim OB-Xa, and ARP 2600, in combination with cheap, contemporary consumer electronics. It is, in all intents and purposes, a short, cautionary story about love. It is also a folk-tale, a science fiction, a suicide note. Unusually for a long-form spoken word piece, it is immediate in its impact, and lasting in its effect. The narrator is damaged and unreliable: Martina Quake's voice, digitally processed into a flat, AI affectless-ness, conveys this all too well. Is this the vernacular poetry of the Uncanny Valley, or is it just that loss makes robots -- numb and listless not-quite-humans -- of us all? Locks revels in the space between the spontaneous and the programmed (what is a poem if not a program?). It's part Tales Of The Unexpected, part Susan Howe, part Ruth Rendell, part HAL (or Holly). Tarquin Manek's music is widescreen but understated... A becalmed landscape populated by distant drones, just-out-of-focus field recordings, and phased, minimalistic, Rhodes-style keys -- a sort of somber, lunar jazz. Just as Quake's words are cumulative in their tragedy, the music grows more agitated and turbulent, at certain points harking back to the smoked-out psycho-acoustics of Manek's 2015 Blackest Ever Black LP, Tarquin Magnet (BLACKEST 047LP, 2015), and his work in F ingers, with Samuel Karmel and Carla dal Forno.

FADER First Light LP
LP version. First Light is the debut album from Fader -- a new band formed by Neil Arthur (Blancmange, Near Future) and Benge, whose work includes his own solo albums, co-productions with Gazelle Twin, and his work with Wrangler and John Foxx And The Maths. The music was recorded and mixed at Benge's MemeTune Studios while Arthur worked on lyrics and vocals in his home studio. The album is full of powerful electronic pop songs -- up-tempo, dark, with flickers of beauty in the sounds and rhythms. Opening with the psychedelic strangeness of "3D Carpets", the album launches with a salvo of exhilarating electronic rock/pop songs including "Check The Power" -- an OCD meltdown with fierce electro surges -- and "I Prefer Solitude", with its brilliantly insistent chorus. From that point, the record buries deeper into melancholy nostalgia; internalized, dead-of-night fears; stream-of-conscious visions of city life and evocative descriptions of lost and lonely figures who find themselves out of time and out of place. The slower tracks such as "Laundrette", "Trip To The Coast", and "Liverpool Brick" are full of longing, with Arthur writing some of the finest lyrics of his career. "Laundrette" is a particularly British spin on the solitary mood of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. The title track is a flow of scrambled epiphanies and mixed-up thoughts while "Way Out" pitches a detached vocal and sense of distance with waves of aggressive, noisily anthemic synths, but then builds through a beautiful keyboard line that makes misery sound oddly inspiring. "Guilt, Doubt And Fear" is a mangled pop song, the catchy hooks snared into a red-eyed, insomniac's voice -- croaky but rich; half-spoken, a damaged croon. By comparison, "Winter Garden" is almost elegant in its minimalist approach, while "Wonderland" is a human drone on the landscape.

MOEBIUS/STORY/LEIDECKER Familiar LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Tim Story on Familiar: "When Jon Leidecker phoned in early 2012 with a proposition, it seemed a little too good to be true. Jon, part of a loose-knit west coast collective of sound artists whose work I much admired, wondered if Dieter Moebius and I might be interested in meeting him in a spectacular Montana mountain studio for a week of recording, no strings attached. Moebius, always up for an adventure, didn't need much convincing either. Converging on tiny Whitefish in September of that year, our little group of five (Moebius's wife Irene, and my wife Maggie couldn't resist either) spent a few marvelous days exploring nearby Glacier National Park before settling down in a motor lodge at the edge of town. The real revelation, we soon realized, was Brett Allen's Snowghost recording studio, perched chalet-style above Whitefish Lake. I'll leave it to others to comment on the music that resulted, but the experience -- old school togetherness and live musical interaction in an era of internet collaboration -- was remarkable. The days blended together, and at the end we left, reluctantly, with a hard drive full of what would become Snowghost Pieces (BB 167CD/LP, 2014) and Familiar. . . . Moebius's passing in 2015 adds a layer of deep bittersweet to memories of the Snowghost sessions, but the opportunity was unforgettable. The sessions were born of improvisations, the music only being discovered in the moment it was sounded. Specific allusions to the natural beauty that surrounded us might seem hard to spot in Familiar -- it contains some of the more restless and abstract music that was recorded that week. But the album's final track 'Vexed' echoes a bit of that strangely epic wilderness, and also perhaps the most perfect balance of the individual musical sensibilities of Jon, Moebius and I. One day sightseeing in the Rockies, along a particularly scenic stretch of road, we pulled over to gawk. While most of us were looking upward at some of the most spectacular vistas on earth, Moebius spotted a pink plastic construction marker half-buried in the gravel. A tawdry, dusty man-made 'flower' in the midst of paradise. Subversive, unexpected, unexplained, and yes, somehow familiar. The photo he snapped became this album's cover, an image discovered by the same curious spirit that led all three of us to the music."

TUSQUES, FRANCOIS Free Jazz LP
Cacophonic present a first time vinyl reissue of a pioneering album of French free jazz, François Tusques's Free Jazz, originally released in 1965. Comprising some of the earliest, uninhibited performances from musicians behind groundbreaking European records and films, Free Jazz captures the birth of an exciting movement that would soon earn its Parisian birthplace as the go-to European spiritual home of improvised and avant-garde music. Spearheaded by pianist and composer François Tusques, this 1965 French album laid the foundations -- alongside Jef Gilson's 1963 album Enfin! (OI 020LP) -- for a unique satellite brand of jazz that would later provide visiting Afro American avant-garde players with a vibrant Parisian platform. With Free Jazz, you not only hear the unique differences within the Gallic approach to the art form (combining masterful somber cinematic changes with aerated free-form percussion and erratic reed and brass), but you also witness the early, lesser savored secret ingredients that would carry France's mainstream pop culture into truly uncharted and unrivalled territories. Best known as the soundtrack composer to the horror-tica films of Jean Rollin, Tusques is joined here by sax and flute player Francois Jeanneau, who later led Triangle, France's leading French language prog-jazz-rock act. Featuring three players from Enfin!, Free Jazz combines the skills of Jeanneau, with clarinet player Michel Portal, and trumpeter Bernard Vitet. In addition to this, Free Jazz also boasts the inclusion of double bass master Bernard "Beb" Guérin, a contributor to Sonny Sharrock's Monkey-Pockie-Boo (1970). It is by no coincidence that this carefully selected ensemble would be enlisted as the backing group for politically driven singer-songwriter Colette Magny (arguably influencing Brigitte Fontaine to adopt The Art Ensemble Of Chicago as her backing band). This album also captures a rare glimpse of percussionist Charles Saudrais in free-form mode after his departure from the Barney Wilen Quartet, resulting in the follow-up record 1970's Le Nouveau Jazz (CACK 014LP) for actor Marcel Mouloudji's privately funded label. This glimpse into a seldom documented underground of a domestic, revolutionary, uncompromised spiritual art-form reveals the other-side of abstracted French music which, alongside musique concrète, protest pop, symphonic rock, and Zeuhl-skool electronic prog, created a homegrown, self-contained music industry that influenced a universe of Gallic magnetic inspiration. Taken from Tusques's master-tape archive. Features two rare original outtakes which did not appear on the original album; Includes a facsimile of the original Tusques-penned booklet.

LEVY, BARRINGTON Poorman Style LP
2017 repress. Some of Barrington Levy's most significant (and enduring) recordings from Channel One Studio, mixed by Scientist. "It's difficult to overstate the transformative effect that Barrington Levy's earliest recordings had on the sound of Jamaican music. In late 1979, Levy's spare, hauntingly arranged early singles completely overtook Jamaican dancehalls and streetside sound clashes. By the time Levy released Poor Man Style in 1982, he was arguably Jamaica's preeminent vocalist. Poor Man Style features a set of punishing rhythms from the crack studio outfit The Roots Radics, with production work from singer?turned?label owner Linval Thompson and former King Tubby protégé Scientist. The title track?a crisply observed sufferers' tale full of tragic notes and indelible details from everyday life?hits particularly hard."

WEB WEB Oracle LP
LP version. Oracle, the first album by the German supergroup Web Web, is very uncut, raw, live, and direct. Their initial idea was to record a spiritual-jazz type of album, with all its imperfection as far as intonation, sound, influences of tunes, just like the big jazz-heroes of the '70s. Web Web's idea was to record a jazz jam session while to found and proclaim being a fictive band, a formation, which did not exist, while telling people, it would be a secret jam session recording of the '70s. But they decided to reveal their real identities: Roberto Di Gioia (piano, synth, percussion), Tony Lakatos (tenor and soprano saxophone), Christian von Kaphengst (upright bass), and Peter Gall (drums). Oracle was recorded in one day, and only first takes were used. Oracle is the first live jazz release on Compost. Roberto Di Gioia has been working with numerous jazz-legends, such as Woody Shaw, Art Farmer, James Moody, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Rouse, Clifford Jordan, Clark Terry, Roy Ayers, Gregory Porter, and many more and from 1990-2008, he was a member Klaus Doldinger's Passport. He started his own group Marsmobil in 2003. Since 2007, he has been working together with Samon Kawamura and Max Herre as KAHEDI. Tony Lakatos originates from the world famous Lakatos-familiy from Budapest, Hungary. His father was a famous violinist, as well as his younger brother Roby. Tony studied at the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest. Since then he played on over 350 jazz albums. Tony was a member of Jasper Van't Hof's Pili Pili. Christian von Kaphengst learned the piano at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz when he was six years old. From 1988 to 1995 he studied upright-bass at the "Musikhochschule" in Cologne. He was touring with his own Jazzquartett "Cafe du Sport" to Pakistan, India, Turkey, and West-Africa. Peter Gall won some important German awards when he was a youngster, like the "Jugend Jazzt". He was touring with the famous Bundesjazzorchester conducted by German jazz legend Peter Herbholzheimer. He studied at the Berlin University Of Fine Arts and at the Jazz Institute Berlin with John Hollenbeck. Produced by Roberto Di Gioia and Michael Reinboth. Oracle was engineered, recorded, and mixed by Jan Krause (Beanfield, Poets Of Rhythm).

VA Doing Our Thing: More Soul From Jamdown 1970-1982 CD
"Artists include Dave Barker, BB Seaton, Junior Byles, Augustus Pablo, Glen Adams, Willie Lindo, Lloyd Charmers, Cedric Brooks, Richard Ace, and more. Sleeve notes from Steve Barrow and Noel Hawks and superb photographs from Dave Hendley. . . . The music makers from Jamaica had always leaned on American, Cuban, and occasionally British, elements in creating their magic and, in doing so, attained their own voice whose worldwide reputation is out of all proportion to its humble beginnings and circumstances. Like the Jamaican people, whose motto is 'out of many, one people', the roots of Jamaican music are embedded deep in the music of elsewhere but as its branches grew they too spread worldwide. The subsequent repercussions have been of serious significance to the music of the past forty years. Its worldwide influence has long overtaken and superseded its origins: the massive sound systems, dub (the 'remix'), Jamaican MCs and deejays (rap). In fact, the whole transmission system of 'dance music' was pioneered in Jamaican dance halls, which are not 'halls' at all since most dances are open air affairs, where as Josie Wales says 'you could skank your life away...'. Accompanied by extensive contextual and historical sleeve notes from Steve Barrow and Noel Hawks and superb photographs from Dave Hendley. This release is respectfully and affectionately dedicated to Dave's memory and his insightful vision."

Going deep into their under-the-counter channels, Dead-Cert have again outdone themselves with this outing, salvaging Science & Technology from total obscurity to reveal an innovator working at the full extent of his avant imagination in a sort of cybernetic symbiosis with his studio-as-instrument. Keening between sounds as much suited to a blood-lusting horror as a psychedelic, drug-fueled thriller or some esoteric sci-fi, he penetrates and opens up vividly magnetizing realms of abstraction that just beg to be explored by listeners who think they've heard it all before. Erring closer to the kind of minimalist negative space and fractured dynamic favored by Belgium's IPEM, or even pre-echoing the atonality of Maurizio Bianchi, for example, as opposed the fluffier lounge tendencies found on many recent reissues from his field, Science & Technology lives up to its title with impressionistic depictions of industry and plugged-in life evocatively animated under titles such as "Fissione Nucleare" and "Biochemica", or accurately modelling processes in the mutant, polymetric patterning of "Germinazione". An album like this is a reminder of the prescient collective and individual genius of the Italian library music scene, especially at a time when the quality levels, in terms of musical intrigue and uniqueness, not just presentation, is being called into question by a swell of inferior, or just plain unnecessary library music relics. As Dead-Cert co-curator Andy Votel explains: "this release is quite unlike the many projects that have recently flooded the reissue market and stands up as one of the truly unobtainable and wholly original records to come from this important era of European studio music by a composer whose reputation is slowly approaching monarchical status."

VA Deep Love 2017 2x12"
The Deep Love compilation has become a way for Dirt Crew Recordings to highlight and welcome new faces to the label. For 2017, more than ever, the label have artists from all over the world, from Japan to Canada and Lithuania to Austria. True to his usual unique blend of many styles, Nachtbraker has delivered typically off-kilter "Cobi Cabani" with crashes and sound design that punctuate a freaky bass and rippling lead. Dropping in for his debut outing on our label, Viennese founder of the Secret Crunch imprint, Roman Rauch brings the filtered disco house. Ripe with fruity percussion and deeply ingrained groove, "Sweet Ears" builds up energy throughout. Lorenz Rhode is an extraordinary artist who's not only active in the house scene but has also created his own big band, the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld. He gets right to it in "On Top", a legit live key and bass jam with funk from a seasoned jazz musician. Toronto's Jesse Futerman teams up with Dan Only. On "Changes", he wanders into coastal-tinged deep house territory. Leipzig's finest M.ono produces "Jamas", a rumbling, samba touched, hip moving jam with powerful horn stabs and jangly percussion bring a true street party feeling. The Icelandic wunderkind Felix Leifur provides an artful mix of glitched, lo-fi breaks, signature Rhodes, dusty hip-hop samples, and scratched jazz cuts that flex into outer-worldly extravaganza on "Record". Ponty Mython offers the super spacious disco sojourn "Who Am I Kidding?" -- classy, deep, sauntering, and aloof. The Nagano based artist Jun Kamoda is back on the label with a crazy mix of influences. On "Whole Lotta Love", arps bounce amongst sweet melodies while crisp drums play with pitchy vocals, it's functional yet left-field house at its finest. A multi-talented creative, he's also painted the wonderful artwork featured on the front of the record's sleeve. Thatmanmonkz goes deep on "Liebestrasse" with a smoky and soulful with a casual clap, glowing Rhodes, and winding lead. Loz Goddard returns with a blissful summer tune, his feel-good mix of disco and house reminiscent of early Groove Armada. Wrapping up is BAL 5000 with one hell of a stomper. The Hungarian producer offers "Under The Influence": Rave stabs intersect a guttural bass and acidic lead on this electro infused house groove, reminiscent of early Warp-ish bleep house. Edition of 500.

The second song comes from the Paris-based, West Cameroon-born singer Tala, produced by desvarieux for Tala's album Mother Africa (1982). SLICK RICK The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick CD/BOOK
"Storytelling has been a part of the hip-hop lexicon since the artform's earliest days. And in all those decades, there has never been a tale weaver like Slick Rick. Even masters who came along in Rick's wake -- ranging from Will Smith to Ghostface Killah and Eminem -- know that even though they blazed their own paths, they never did it better than the Slick one When it comes to Rick and his tales, 1988's 'Children's Story' is perhaps his best, recited to this day by fans and MCs in training as a rite of passage. Just hearing the opening lines begins a sing-along that can quickly fill a room: 'Once upon a time / Not long ago / When people wore pajamas / And lived life slow?.' Get On Down, known for its unique approach to packaging hip-hop classics, has come up with another winner here, presenting the lyrics to this immortal rap tale in never-before-seen form. Rick's lines from the song are re-created in visual form in a 16 page book with a puffy cover -- presented like a legit children's book, thick pages and all. From the little boy who was misled to the tense police chase, to the unsure children hearing the story from their 'uncle Ricky,' this is the most unique way the story has ever been presented. Of course there is music to match -- for this deluxe bundle comes packaged with an accompanying CD of The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, the 1988 Def Jam album that made Rick a worldwide star. Whether you pick this up for yourself or to give to the hip-hop fan on your shopping list who will stare wide-eyed at the unique package, no one will walk away from this one disappointed."

ASTRID & RACHEL GRIMES Through The Sparkle LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500. Through The Sparkle is a collaboration between French ensemble Astrïd and American pianist and composer Rachel Grimes. Rachel Grimes is best known for her chamber music project Rachel's, a hugely influential group formed in 1991 in Louisville, Kentucky, releasing six studio albums between 1995 and 2005. She has also released a string of contemporary classical works in recent years on labels such as Temporary Residence. Astrïd is a collective of four musicians based in Nantes, releasing records on Rune Grammofon and Home Normal. After years of mail and email back and forth over the ocean, from Nantes to Kentucky, Astrïd invited Rachel to come for a residency to make music together and play shows in France. They gathered for a few days, here and there, in 2012 and 2013 to write songs in Cyril and Vanina's home studio in the countryside. The compositions found on Through The Sparkle glow with a unique, connected energy and a pure, instinctive musical understanding. Considered contributions from all sides allow the pieces to unfurl naturally. Each note and phrase feels like it simply couldn't be placed anywhere else in the album. Charming, gentle, and cinematic sounds are found here in abundance. Melodies circle and reveal themselves without force, allowing the listener to focus and explore the depths of what is on offer. Musically, Through The Sparkle is an expansive and evocative album. There is a presence to be felt throughout, from Cyril Secq's emotive tremelo'd guitars of "M5" to the darker, more haunting mood of "The Theme", to the tension in "Mossgrove & Seaweed". Strings and woodwind coalesce around intricate piano and guitar movements creating a wealth of harmony and melancholy. Through The Sparkle is a record of miniature symphonies, of elegant restraint. A gracious and generous offering from a group of musicians at one with each other and at the top of their game. Artwork by SmilingPaperGhosts.

TAMIKREST Chatma LP+CD
Restocked. Gatefold LP version with CD. "Tamikrest" means "crossing" in the language of the Kel Tamashek, a traditionally nomadic Saharan people that are commonly referred to as the Tuaregs. It is an apt name for a band that so successfully merges the values of their timeless culture with the sounds and visions they have encountered on a headlong journey to the concert stages and iPods of the world. Since the band emerged onto the international scene with their debut album Adagh, they have been in constant motion, moving between the Sahara and Europe as though these places were next-door neighbors. All the while, during this same time period, their homeland has suffered increasingly profound and catastrophic events. Originally hailing from Kidal, in the northeast of Mali, as the result of ongoing war, persecution and political collapse, most of the band now lives in exile in Algeria. These last years have been intensely vivid for Tamikrest, defined as they have been by both tragic sadness (families and friends turned refugees, the brutal imposition of Sharia law in their hometown) and collective growth (their musical dreams building one upon another). Their album Chatma, their third, deftly navigates these experiences and fashions them into a fully persuasive and poetic musical document. The album is filled with sober reflection, moral indignation, musical experimentation, cultural celebration and the kick of rock and roll. Chatma is also Tamikrest's first album to be wholly written around a defined theme. In Tamashek, "chatma" means "sisters," and the band has dedicated the album in their own words to: "the courage of the Tuareg women, who have ensured both their children's survival and the morals of their fathers and brothers." Chatma also delivers Tamikrest's most wide-screen and wide-ranging sonic statement to-date. The infectious, sing-along rock stylings of "Imanin bas zihoun," the acoustic seduction of "Adounia tabarat," the Pink Floyd-influenced montage "Assikal" and the lush, melancholy ambiance of the album's finale, "Timtar," all add up to a sustained audio adventure. Echoes of dub, blues, psychedelia, funk and even art-rock are seamlessly woven by Tamikrest into their increasingly individual take on the Tuareg musical tradition. And on an album where the title translates as "sisters," it makes perfect sense that this time around we hear the full emergence of the haunting voice of female vocalist Wonou Walet Sidati in tandem with lead vocalist Ousmane Ag Mossa. A new guitarist, Paul Salvagnac has also joined the band, bringing with him fresh textures and possibilities. Contemporary Tuareg music has produced several unforgettable albums in recent years and Chatma certainly deserves to be ranked with these. But one also gets the sense, when listening to Chatma that there is something uniquely innovative and exploratory about Tamikrest's musical quest and that at last they have stepped into a wide-open space of their own.

SEYMALI, NOURA MINT Tzenni LP
Restocked. 180 gram LP version, housed in a gatefold sleeve. Includes download code. "'Tzenni' in Hassaniya means to circulate, to spin, to turn. It's the name for a whirling dance performed to the music of Moorish griots, often under khaima tents thrown up for street gatherings in the sandy quarters of Nouakchott and out across the wide deserts of Mauritania. Tzenni is an orbit, the movement of the earth around the sun, the daily progression of light and dark, lunar cycles, tides and winds. Tzenni, the dance, comes forth as the cyclical trajectory of a Moorish musical gathering builds to a feverish pitch. Produced and recorded across an appropriately dizzying array of locations and social contexts (New York City, Dakar, Nouakchott), the album Tzenni is a contemporary articulation of Moorish griot music from Mauritania -- an artform that has been evolving and gaining momentum for centuries -- as voiced by Noura Mint Seymali, an artist profoundly steeped in its history and rigorously devoted to its global resonance. Noura Mint Seymali comes from a long line of visionary musicians. Seymali Ould Ahmed Vall, her father, was a scholar-artist instrumental in opening Mauritanian music to the world; devising the first system for Moorish melodic notation, adapting music for the national anthem, and composing works popularized by his wife (Noura's step-mother), the great Dimi Mint Abba. From her precocious beginnings as a teenaged backing vocalist with Dimi Mint Abba, Noura Mint Seymali now drives the legacy forward, re-calibrating Moorish music for our contemporary moment. Her band's arrangements, rigor, and experimental spirit may be understood as a continuation of the tradition of Seymali, Dimi, her grandmother Mounina, and countless others. Together with her husband, heroic guitarist Jeiche Ould Chighaly, who brings the force of yet another powerful branch of Moorish musical lineage, the band on this recording was conceived as a distillation of essential elements, the 'azawan' and the backbeat. The ardine & tidinit (or guitar) together are the 'azawan,' the leading ensemble of Moorish traditional music, while bass & drums, played here by Ousmane Touré and Matthew Tinari, fortify it with genre-transcendent funk and a basic pop urgency. Tzenni re-visits several classics of the Moorish repertoire, but does so within a novel formation, conversant in the pop idiom, and with Noura Mint's practice of aligning music to a given socio-historical and personal moment, it is an essential charge of the iggawen, or griot, and, we believe, of artists everywhere. As we seek to convey another turn in the Mauritanian musical dialectic, Tzenni is ultimately an album about shapeshifting, faith, and stability found through instability." --Matthew Tinari, producer/drummer for Noura Mint Seymali

HASSELL & BRIAN ENO, JON Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics CD
Originally released in 1980, Jon Hassell and Brian Eno's collaborative album Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics is a sound document whose ongoing influence seems beyond dispute. Not only is the album a defining moment in the development of what Eno coined as "ambient music" but it also facilitated the introduction of Hassell's "future primitive" trumpet stylings and visionary "Fourth World" musical theories to the broader public. These vectors continue to enrich contemporary audio culture. Eno's ambient strategies are now fixed in the DNA of electronic music and the cross-cultural legacy of Hassell's "Fourth World" concept is apparent not only in the marketplace genre "World Music" but also more persuasively in the accelerating number of digitally-driven, borderless musical fusions we now experience. By the time that Eno and Hassell met, Hassell's experiments with a "Fourth World" musical vocabulary were well underway and in fact it was because of these experiments, particularly Hassell's debut album Vernal Equinox that Brian Eno purposefully sought him out. Within a couple of months of Hassell's performance at The Kitchen the duo entered Celestial Sound in New York City and began work on what would become Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics. Hassell invited previous collaborators like the Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and the Senegalese drummer Ayibe Dieng to join the sessions. Most of the tracks carry a Hassell/Eno writing credit, though the 20-minute "Charm (Over 'Burundi Cloud')" was a carryover from Hassell's concert repertoire. Hassell has made it clear in several interviews over the years that the album's shared billing was at least partly inaccurate and that Eno's contribution was mainly as a producer. More spiky, angular and steeped in rhythm and exoticism than most of Eno's records and more drone-based, reflective and sonorous than most of Hassell's outings, Possible Musics -- whatever the actual division of labor in sound and concept -- is a seminal highlight in both of their discographies. A meeting of two of the late 20th century's most restless and prescient musicians, the album sounds as beguiling, indeterminate and otherworldly today as it did 34 years ago when it was originally released. The impact of Possible Musics on the contemporary music conversation was almost immediate. Just ten days after it was mastered, Brian Eno and David Byrne convened in Los Angeles to continue experiments inspired in part by Hassell's musical theories. The resultant album would be called My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. All parties involved agree that Ghosts was originally conceived as a trio project that included Hassell but the idea fell apart over disagreements about logistics and musical direction. Hassell still remains bitter about what he considers the projects un-credited appropriation of his musical signatures. From there it was a short jump forward to the chart-topping, Afro-futurism of The Talking Heads Remain in Light, an album that Eno co-produced and Hassell guested on. "Fourth World" strategies have echoed, and can still be heard echoing in the music of Peter Gabriel, Nils Petter Molvaer, Björk, David Sylvian, David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Damon Albarn, DJ Spooky, Jah Wobble, Matmos, 23 Skidoo, Goat, Bill Laswell, Mark Ernestus, Adrian Sherwood, and of course, the ongoing projects of Eno and Hassell themselves. Glitterbeat is proud and honored to re-release and re-introduce this compelling, groundbreaking album.

HANOI MASTERS War Is a Wound, Peace Is a Scar CD
Midline pricing. The first volume in Glitterbeat's Hidden Musics, a series of unmediated field recordings of lesser-known global music traditions. War Is a Wound, Peace Is a Scar is a haunting audio document recorded in the summer of 2014 by Grammy-award winning producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, The Good Ones). The sepia-tinged songs are sung and played live and direct by elderly Vietnamese musicians using half-forgotten traditional instruments. These musicians all have deep, personal connections to the upheavals of the Vietnam War; the recordings' mesmerizing mood navigates the blurred line between raw beauty and sadness. An album of cautious healing and an unforgettable meditation on conflict, resistance, collective memory, and the longing for what has been lost. Brennan recalls the recording process for this remarkable document in the album's liner notes, excerpted here: "We had gone to Hanoi to record veterans from their side. Some were music masters, one of whom had joined the army at age thirteen and whose job it was to sing to the troops to boost morale and provide solace. Another was a former AK-47 issued village leader who had not sung in over forty years, and proved to be the most dead-on vocally. She did not hide or adorn, but quietly revealed muted emotions that a microphone often can detect more easily than face-to-face interaction. Then, immediately afterwards, she withdrew back into a stoic shell... With a whammy-bar technology that dates back to the ninth century, it is fair to say that Vietnamese traditions had a bit of a head start over the headbangers of the 1980s. A startling revelation was a plucked instrument (the k'ni) that is clasped between the teeth as the local dialect... is spoken through the? single string. What sounds like an extraterrestrial instrumental to the uninitiated actually contains coded, poetic lyrics... Let it suffice to say that these artists are a far cry from the lip-synching karaoke show that we saw on the local cable, with groups of teenagers cavorting on a soundstage and mouthing the words to K-pop songs -- air-karaoke, if you will -- that managed to render something pre-fab even less real. These elders carry a haunting, but muted sadness that seems only fully revealed through the music that they valiantly keep alive in the face of industrialization, waning regard and interest, and the rapid homogenization and 'progress' overtaking their homeland."

AFRO-HAITIAN EXPERIMENTAL ORCHESTRA Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra CD
2016 release. Four-and-a-half-thousand miles of cold ocean separate West Africa from Haiti. But music can cover that distance in a heartbeat, crossing the Atlantic to reunite the rhythms and religion of people torn from their homes to be sold into slavery on the Caribbean island. And on its self-titled album, the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra honors those ghosts of the past even as it walks steadfastly and hopefully into the future. Experimental by name, the band was definitely experimental by nature. The concept started with Corinne Micaelli, the director of the French Institute in Haiti. She wanted to bring drummer Tony Allen, the power behind Afrobeat and one of modern music's towering figures, to the island. A performance with Haitian musicians at a major public concert would be perfect. Allen agreed, and Erol Josué, a singer, dancer, voodoo priest, and director of the Haitian National Bureau of Ethnology, helped to recruit local percussionists and singers. They decided, in order for different strands of Haitian music to be represented, that the musicians would be drawn from a cross-section of the country's foremost bands, including Racine Mapou de Azor, RAM (Josué's own band), Yizra'El, and Lakou Mizik (led by Sanba Zao, one of Haiti's leading percussionists and traditional singers). Together, the musicians had just five days to compose and rehearse the set they'd play in the main square of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, and broadcast live throughout the country. "Putting it together was complete chaos," recalls Mark Mulholland, who was drafted in as the Orchestra's guitarist. "Madness. We were all in this tiny room, playing. We had 10 percussionists from all of Haiti's top bands. Then there was Tony, Olaf Hund on keyboards, and Jean-Philippe Dary, an old friend of Tony's, on bass. He became the de facto musical director. The sound was overwhelming. . . . When we played in public after those five days together we just hoped it would work. The gig was a big festival, La Fête de la Musique, and a few bands had been on before us, so everything was running late and we were tense. Then, just before our set, someone set off a tear gas grenade in front of the stage." Eventually, the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra was able to play. They'd hoped to record the event, but technical problems prevented that. And with some of the main players leaving the next morning it seemed that the music would be no more than a fleeting memory. "We still had multi-track recordings from the rehearsals, though," Mulholland continues. "I decided to go through them and see what I could find. I wasn't even thinking of releasing it. I just wanted to preserve what we'd done for posterity. We'd achieved something, created something important. It deserved to be remembered. So we re-recorded all the vocals with Erol Josué, Sanba Zao, and the other singers." The result captures the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra sparking on all cylinders. The music is alive with the sense of spontaneity and adventure, the members supporting and pushing each other, diving headlong into the music and creating something that stands outside geography and genre.

ORKESTA MENDOZA Vamos A Guarachar CD
2016 release. Born in Nogales, AZ, raised in Nogales, Mexico, multi-instrumentalist and band-leader Sergio Mendoza grew up listening to the Mexican regional styles jostling for headspace in a young, music-mad mind -- cumbia mainly, but mambo, rancheras, and mariachi too. The border is always a fierce arena of exchange, both commercial and cultural, and so there was American music too. At one point "rock and roll, the classics," as Mendoza himself deadpans, seemed to win out and he stopped playing those "Latin styles" for a good decade and a half. The return to those sounds was a strong one in 2012's Mambo Mexicano!, co-produced by Mendoza and Joey Burns of Calexico -- a band for which Mendoza has become an increasingly integral touring and recording member. While that record had a studied air, tentative in parts (as befits the renewal of an old love affair), ¡Vamos A Guarachar! is another beast entirely: by turns raucous ("Cumbia Volcadora," featuring Mexican electronic pioneer Camilo Lara), tender ("Misterio," surely Salvador Duran's finest moment with the band so far), and plain serious fun, as in "Contra La Marea" and "Mapache," it also bears a robust electronic edge, a keen pop sensibility, and all the hallmarks of Mendoza's love of '60s rock, with the closing track, "Shadows of the Mind," sure to be included if anyone decides to update the Nuggets collection for the 21st century. This is roundabout way of saying that it appears to have everything, but never too much of anything. Focused, fierce, and beautifully executed by a superbly drilled set of musicians, it is a work that fully matches the band's explosive live performances. Sergio Mendoza: vocals, keyboards, guitars, drums, percussion, programming, horns; Salvador Duran: lead vocals on "Cumbia Volcadora," "Misterio," and "Cumbia Amor De Lejos"; Sean Rogers: bass, lead vocals on "Shadows of the Mind"; Marco Rosano: sax, clarinet, trombone, keyboards, guitar; Raul Marques: backing vocals; Joe Novelli: lap steel.

BABA ZULA XX 2CD
A kaleidoscopic career-spanning compilation from Istanbul's revered psychedelic explorers. Esteemed collaborators include Sly & Robbie, Mad Professor, Dr. Das of Asian Dub Foundation, Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten), and more. Without a doubt one of the planet's great musical adventures. Baba Zula have been a shining beacon since 1996, bringing the West and the Orient together in a glory of Istanbul psychedelia. To celebrate those two decades of existence, XX brings together tracks from across Baba Zula's history, along with a second album of dubs created by artists like Mad Professor, Dr. Das of Asian Dub Foundation, and Dirtmusic. "We wanted to have a compilation that was a little different," explains group founder and electric saz player Osman Murat Ertel. "None of the pieces here are in their original forms. Instead, we picked remixes, re-recordings, collaborations, live tracks, all the possibilities, but none of these have been released before. And it's a mix of recording techniques -- digital, analogue, tape, mp3." Formed by Ertel and Levent Akman in 1996, Baba Zula took Turkish psychedelic pioneers of the 1960s like Mo?ollar as their inspiration and foundation for what they called Istanbul psychedelia, a scene that's since grown up around them. Baba Zula have played all over the world, won awards for their work in film and theater, and had their albums counted among the most prestigious ever released in Turkey. They've also built a global network of like-minded performers, experimental souls in all genres of music, working with people as varied as Turkish opera singer Semiha Berksoy, dub mixer Mad Professor, and Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit. In typically perverse and playful fashion, their biggest "hit" -- "Bir Sana Bir De Bana" ("One For You And One For Me") is here, it's not the original Baba Zula version of the song, but one by Deleyaman featuring a duet between an Armenian man and a French woman. Also included are a pair of previously unreleased live tracks. "Çöl Aslanlari" ("Desert Lions") was mixed by Einstürzende Neubauten's Alexander Hacke, while "Abdülcanbaz" is taken from a performance at the Resistance Festival in Piraeus, Greece, with Ertel's electric saz powering and pushing the group higher and higher over a swell of percussion, electric oud, effects, and vocals. They're long, mesmeric cuts, the pulsing of an ancient Turkish soul in a very modern band.

TAMIKREST Adagh CD
2010 release. The debut album by Tuareg band Tamikrest. "As far as I'm concerned, it's Tinariwen who created the path," declares Ousmane Ag Mossa, frizzy-locked leader of Tamikrest, in a pre-emptive strike against a thousand inevitable questions. "But the way I see it, if younger bands don't come through, then Touareg music will eventually die. They created the path and now it's up to us to walk down it and create the future." Mossa was born in a village called Tinzaouaten, a solitary speck squeezed up against Mali's northeastern border with Algeria. With his constant friend Cheikh Ag Tiglia, Mossa would write songs and perform them at the school shows. He learned the Tamashek guitar style by listening to a particular cassette that Tinariwen's leader, Ibrahim aka Abaraybone, had recorded in Algeria in 1998. In 2002, events once again undermined the tenuous calm and stability in Tinza. The village was home to one of the southern desert's most infamous freedom fighters and warlords, Ibrahim ag Bahanga. For this reason it became a military no-go zone. Mossa's father left to live with his eldest sons in Libya, and both Mossa and Tiglia went south to Kidal, where they would form Tamikrest and develop their style and their fan base among Kidal's younger generation. They knew the Tamashek guitar style intimately, but they were also deeply into rap, metal, Maghrebi pop, and Afro-disco music from Côte d'Ivoire. In late 2007, Tamikrest member Pino contacted Manny Ansar, the director of the now-world-famous Festival in the Desert, and clinched a gig for Tamikrest. The band found the money to transport themselves the 600 miles eastward to Timbuktu. In the silky dunes of Essakane they met Dirtmusic, a group of rock 'n' roll veterans from the USA and Australia. It was one of those meetings fashioned by fate in the workshops of destiny. Chris Eckman of Dirtmusic remembers the meeting thus: "On our first morning in Essakane we woke up hearing music, so we went across the sand to the tent opposite ours and that's where Tamikrest was playing. Chris Brokaw grabbed his dobro and headed over, then Hugo and I eventually did the same and basically for three days we didn't leave." The friendship formed at Essakane grew in the following months and lead to an invitation by Dirtmusic to come to the Malian capital Bamako to make an album, and contribute to Dirtmusic's own oeuvre. After another epic journey of 1,200 miles, by car and bus, Mossa, Mohammedine, and crew entered their first professional studio and Adagh was born.

TAMIKREST Adagh LP
LP version. 180-gram vinyl. They created the path and now it's up to us to walk down it and create the future." DIRTMUSIC BKO CD+DVD
2010 release. "BKO" is the international abbreviation for Bamako Airport in Mali's capital city. It is also the title of second album by Dirtmusic, a group of rock 'n' roll veterans from the USA and Australia, which was recorded at the famous Studio Bogolan in Bamako -- set up by the late Ali Farka Touré. All three members of Dirtmusic have a long-lasting history as musicians and songwriters in various bands: Chris Eckman is the leader of acclaimed US band The Walkabouts, and has also collaborated with Willard Grant Conspiracy and many others. Chris Brokaw has collaborated with Evan Dando and The Lemonheads, Liz Phair, and Thurston Moore. The two Americans are joined by Australian-born Hugo Race, the leader of True Spirit and one of the original members of The Bad Seeds. Eckman and Race were labelmates and in 2006 they got together with Brokaw to form Dirtmusic. Dirtmusic's first album, recorded in 2007 in Eckman's adopted home city of Ljubljana, Slovenia, somehow got into the hands of the booking agent for Mali's annual Festival of the Desert, who invited them to perform. Next to Dirtmusic's tent was that of young Touareg desert blues band Tamikrest. The two bands found themselves jamming together almost non-stop and discovered that their ideas and music fit perfectly. It was clear that this jam somehow had to continue after the festival. So a year later Dirtmusic returned to Mali to record BKO -- with Tamikrest backing them in the studio. During their meeting in the desert they had played The Velvet Underground's legendary "All Tomorrow's Parties" together. When Brokaw struck up the first few chords of the song, Tamikrest just jumped right in without a second thought, as if they'd been listening to The Velvet Underground since the '60s -- which they hadn't. Luckily, they recreated this jam in the studio to include on the album. The natural process continued throughout the recording. For instance, Tamikrest leader Ousmane Ag Mossa spontaneously sings in Tamashek over the groove to "Black Gravity" and a kind of fusion erupts between Dirtmusic and Tamikrest. (While most songs are composed by either Eckman, Race, or Brokaw, "Black Gravity" contains Ousmane's own composition "Imidiwan," meaning "friends," which he gave to his new friends of Dirtmusic to include inside their song "Black Gravity.") Other Malian stars paid visits to the studio: Fadimata Walet Oumar from the famous Touareg group Tartit lends her sublime vocals to "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "Desert Wind." Two master musicians from Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra jam on several abstract pieces, with one of them, "Niger Sundown," included on the album, while guitar legend Lobi Traoré plays on closing track "Bring It Home." The CD comes with a bonus PAL-format, region-free DVD containing a documentary, three music videos, and four bonus songs.

TAMIKREST Toumastin CD
2011 release. Tamikrest follow their 2010 debut, Adagh (GR 703CD/LP), with Toumastin, honing their focus on the rebellious power of rock music in their own special way. Tamikrest are from Kidal, a remote desert town in the northwest of the Sahara, some 1,200 miles north of the capital, Bamako. Tamikrest are substantially younger than the most prominent Tuareg band, Tinariwen, but there is a close resemblance between both bands. Just like Tinariwen, Tamikrest have found a way to translate the pulse of the blues -- the roots of which lie in North Africa -- back to the Tuareg language Tamaschek. They take generators deep into the desert to have electricity for their guitars in search for the perfect synthesis of their traditional ritual drumming with the music of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. Tamikrest's leader, Ousmane Ag Mossa, is quick to admit his influences: "When I was young I listened to a lot of traditional Tuareg music as well as Tinariwen. There was no other music. I started to learn the guitar around that time and it was only in 2000 that I had access to cassettes of Bob Marley and Dire Straits. That changed my musical vision completely and I stopped to classify music. Music is just music, no matter where it comes from. Music is just too big for me to comprehend in its entirety. My goal is to broaden my horizon step by step." Tamikrest are on a trip into the infinite world of music. When the band was founded in 2006 they had a hard time getting exposure in their homeland as it proved to be difficult for music with ancient traditions in a country that is flooded with Western-influenced hip-hop and pop. Things changed abruptly when they played the Festival Au Desert in 2008 and met with the American/Australian band Dirtmusic, made up of Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts), Chris Brokaw (Come), and Hugo Race (Hugo Race & True Spirit). Mossa talks about the fateful meeting: "We jammed in tents, open air in the desert sand and on stage. This has extended my musical knowledge tremendously and from that point on I played my guitar in a different way. Through Dirtmusic we had the chance to work in a professional studio for the first time. There was no way had we would let that opportunity pass, so we travelled the long way from Kidal to Bamako." With their second album, Toumastin, the young Tuareg rebels create their own universe using even brighter colors. The enchanted ancient mystique of the songs captures the ear immediately, but as the music carries on the band bridges the gaps between African blues, hypnotic dub, psychedelic funk, and an almost supernatural kind of desert garage. The guitars are more offensive, the groove deepens, and the Tamaschek chants merge with the meandering guitar riffs like a caravan voyage through ancient times.

TAMIKREST Toumastin LP
Restocked. Up-and-coming Malian band Tamikrest release their second album. Their debut album Adagh generated a buzz throughout the world and was met with enthusiasm from fans and critics alike who agreed that these young musicians are focusing the rebellious power of rock music in their own special way. Tamikrest are from Kidal, a remote desert town in the northwest of the Sahara, some 2,000 kilometers north of the capital, Bamako. The band members are all Tuaregs, a group of people that is spread all over North and some of West Africa, i.e. Niger, Mali, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Libya. In ancient times, the Tuareg were the proud rulers of the Sahara, but their territory was divided in different countries and they had to fight long and hard for independence. Between 1990 and 1995 this fight evolved into a bloody civil war. After the war, many of the rebel fighters traded the Kalashnikovs and hand grenades for guitars and microphones. The band Tinariwen is the most prominent example of the unusual establishment of peace through the spirit of music. But their mission is carried further in their songs. The members of Tamikrest are substantially younger than Tinariwen's and they have not actively fought in the war, but there is a close resemblance between both bands. Just like Tinariwen, Tamikrest have found a way to translate the pulse of the blues -- whose roots lie in North Africa -- back to the Tuareg language, Tamaschek. They take generators deep into the desert to have electricity for their guitars in search for the perfect synthesis of their traditional ritual drumming with the music of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. The guitars are more offensive, the groove deepens and the Tamaschek chants merge with the meandering guitar riffs like a caravan voyage through ancient times. Tamikrest are ready to embrace the future while proudly maintaining the rich tradition of their folk.

CLOSE & JOHN BRENT, DEL How To Speak Hip LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of Del Close and John Brent's How To Speak Hip, originally released in 1961. Attention, this is one of the non-music cult obscurities that came out of nowhere during decades of music history. This 1961 release is a fictional dialogue between a moderator and somebody involved in the late 1950s hipster/beatnik movement in which both discuss the meaning of words and phrases from the youth and "hipster" language of the '50s. It is different to the typical spoken word records where either political or philosophical pamphlets get recited. It is a dialogue, a comedic dialogue with some audience noises faded in, some strange narrations, and examples of how to speak in a 1950s beatnik style. It is an interesting authentic document of its time and certainly a challenge even for those who speak English fairly well. A collectors item for fans and retro hipsters at a time when a vivid counter society was pulsating beyond the idyllic world on the surface. Includes the original "Hip Manual". Includes "beatnik-jazz" bonus tracks by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Lee Morgan, and the Horace Silver Quintet.

MOBLEY SEXTET, HANK Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd And Lee Morgan LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd And Lee Morgan, originally released in 1957. This is an ancient Blue Note rarity recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio in 1956 with legendary bass man Paul Chambers doing the deep notes. First press originals in adequate condition go for about 500 Euros. So what does this sextet featuring trumpeters Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan with tenor saxophone hero Hank Mobley as bandleader and piano madcap Horace Silver backing the rhythm section with his extraordinary chord progressions have to offer? The album is widely labeled as "hard bop" and it shows a great development from the mid-to-late 1940s bebop scene where John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and other now mystical protagonists brought the swinging dance music of the even older big bands to a new level of sophistication and still maintained an earthy and highly spirited atmosphere. Same goes for the hard bop and post-bop scene of the later half of the 1950s from which modal jazz and free jazz emerged within the wink of an eye. All four lengthy compositions on this album are still one step behind the next level, and show a playfully jamming band executing comprehensible harmony lines backed by tricky, yet enthralling grooves that in the end move straight forward despite the rhythm section playing mostly around the pulse. The duels of both trumpets and the tenor sax heat up ones soul as they are aligned with the racy rhythm patterns. The melodies themselves are quite cheerful and cool. When Paul Chambers takes the bow in one passage of the fourth tune "Mobleymania" and scratches some cool lines backed up with an ever-flowing drum pulse, nobody will sit still. All six musicians here are fairly well connected with each other in terms of playing tightly to what the next improvises. Mobley especially burns with every note he plays, and if you bushwhack through to the core which carries the steaming dialogues between trumpets and saxophone, you will find some maniacs building rhythmical patterns par excellence. This album certainly demands many spins before you will be aware of every beautiful detail. Indeed a classic of 1950s jazz aside from the greasy mainstream sound. Let's go wild with Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan. Includes two bonus tracks.

WALDRON WITH JACKIE MCLEAN, JOHN COLTRANE, IDREES SULIEMAN, SAHIB SHIHAB AND BILL HARDMAN, MAL Mal/2 LP
Go! Bop! present a reissue of Mal/2, originally released in 1957. Even half a Mal is more greatness than many people out there could take. Mel Waldron was another 1950s master of hard bop jazz and finds himself in illustrious company on his 1957 debut album. John Coltrane and Sahib Shihab are masters of tenor and alto saxophone and jazz freaks break into a sweat of joy when they hear these names. Coltrane alone could be a reason to fall in love with this record. You can always hear his very original kind of playing of the tenor. No wonder first pressings of this gem go for 250 USD and even more in fine conditions. It might be a lesser known participation of the great John Coltrane with another bandleader, but as he glows permanently on this album, the rest of the musicians do the same. The band goes full throttle when needed, but there are also thought-provoking slow tunes generating an atmosphere of melancholy, like when Waldron makes his piano sing a dark ballad while the drummer barely stands out and just backs up the whole composition with a low-key beat, linked to the equally reluctant bass line. Trumpet and tenor come in play after a while to moan wearily on top of that reduced rhythmical pattern. Dark and smoke-filled bars in a nameless American metropolis are exactly what will be associated with these haunting melodies. And suddenly, the band gains pace and the whole atmosphere becomes more cheerful. The grooves are swinging and good for a dance or two. The leading instruments -- alto sax, tenor sax, and trumpet -- chatter, frolicsome like a bunch of youngsters on a night out in town. These changes of atmosphere are one of the strong points of this record. Another is the overall tight interplay of all instruments. These cats were hard-nosed veterans of the jazz genre taking the 1940s dance club sounds to another level. Bebop turns into hard bop and this album shows the dignity in such a crystal clear way.

LATEEF & DONALD BYRD, YUSEF Byrd Jazz: First Flight At The Motor City Scenes LP
Go! Bop! present Yusef Lateef and Donald Byrd's Byrd Jazz: First Flight At The Motor City Scenes, a reissue originally released in 1956. This record was first released in 1956 as Byrd Jazz with Donald Byrd declared as the band leader, but several versions have been issued over the years. The last reissue was released about three decades ago (1990) and so it seems like it's time for another fresh print of this back-row classic of the 1950s jazz scene. On these recordings, there is floating and grooving hard bop with an ever pulsating rhythm section, dueling tenor sax by Lateef and trumpet by Byrd, plus solo slots for bass, drums, and piano. The leading instruments generate a cheerful atmosphere and make this live album a blissful experience for every lover of the mid '50s hard bop sound. The passion of the musicians grabs the audience immediately and when the melodies pour out of your speakers, you will be captured by this pure essence of jazz as well. Far from later modal and even free jazz monoliths, these catchy tunes are quite easy to follow. The band is tight and this proves to be a great advantage. Every note and every beat of the drums sits in the right place as if they had always been there and just had to be made audible by the band. It is indeed like the sculptor who already sees the glyph within the block of marble and just sets it free. The music plays itself through the instruments. Haunting and relaxed passages, cool melodies put into memorable structures. A classic among the hipsters and beatniks with their goat beards, metal-rimmed glasses, and berets, drinking, tripping, and philosophizing to the sound of this and many other albums that were made from jazz aficionados for their kind.

VA Living Is Hard: West African Music in Britain, 1927-1929 CD
2017 repress; Honest Jon's has prepared a series drawing on some of the earliest recordings in the EMI Hayes Archive -- recovered from more than 150,000 78s -- staggering music from Iraq, Turkey, Caucasia, Lebanon, Iran (including sides made in Old Street, London, in 1909), Egypt and the Belgian Congo. This series opener presents the music of the West African underground of 1920s Britain, recorded at Hayes and released on the Zonophone label (which exported nearly all the records to West Africa). You can hear Caribbean influences here, the promise of highlife there, but Living Is Hard mostly disavows fusion and assimilation. And by contrast with antecedents in the history of black music in Britain -- minstrelsy and spirituals, for example, ragtime and jazz -- these recordings are unhitched from the protocols of a white listenership. These are startling, trenchant, elemental roots -- carrying troubled news home, along with signs of the new African nationalism -- and an enthralling glimpse of other lives, other times. Artists include: Oni Johnson, Isaac Jackson, Ben Simmons, Harry E. Quashie, Douglas Papafio, Prince Zulamkah, The West African Instrumental Quintet, The Ga Quartet, Domingo Justus, James Tucker, John Mugat, Kumasi Trio, James Thomas, Nicholas De Heer, George Williams Aingo and James Brown.

BOBUCK, CHARLES Nineteen-Sixty-Seven CD
"The all-new album by former Residents composer Bobuck. Based on the H. Fox story, 'O-bay Scooplaws and the Summer of Love.' Scooplaws was one of the thousands of bands who pilgrimaged to San Francisco in 1967 with hopes of making it big. O-bay Scooplaws was one of the thousands of bands whose dreams were smashed like a Peter Townsend guitar. 'We planned to leave for California at midnight hoping for lighter traffic and avoidance of the excruciating heat the Southern Route is so famous for. But it was nearing 2:30 and the truck still did not have the drum set loaded. There was a nervousness in the air. Our parents had seen us off hours ago, telling us to be careful, the usual things they say when they finally accept that they no longer have any say in what their children are going to do. I started out in the cab. We listened to the all-night radio stations as we crossed the country. My turn to be in the back came somewhere in Arizona. It didn't go so well for me as I found the isolation and the flapping tarp challenging my mental state. I tried to sleep as best I could. When we arrived in San Francisco we had no real plans other to be a part of what was happening and try to get gigs. The only place we knew about in San Francisco was the Jefferson Airplane house on Fulton Street across from Golden Gate Park. The band members all lived in this huge mansion. It was famous. So we went there. Before we could say more, the man put a finger to his lips to quieten us and then motioned us into the house. We only stayed one night. Their manager found us a flat the next day. I bought a tape recorder and started learning how to use it by setting lyrics of some of my favorite songs from 1967 to new music. I saw it as a way of hearing these lyrics fresh again, of understanding deeper meanings in what was being said. Now it is fifty years later, 2017. Klanggalerie thought it was time to release my old recordings as a way of paying tribute to those golden times.' "

And indeed, the Total class of 2017 exudes a playful abundance few other compilations can match after 15+ years: label veterans and newcomers such as Superpitcher, Weval, Tobias Thomas & Michael Mayer, Chris Klopfer, Jürgen Paape, Voigt & Voigt, Max Scholpp, and Nu U Orchestra provide some of the catchiest material the series has seen to date. Like other Total compilations before it, Total 17 is first and foremost a perfect opportunity to delve into Kompakt's recent back catalog, with the The pièce de résistance, however, is the Total-exclusive content: eight brand new cuts from core Kompakt artists and selected label debutants that will please the collecting connoisseur as well as the ambitious dancefloor activist. Thomas/Mayer's "25" is a charming, bass-happy belter with a distinct Forever Sweet vibe, while Superpitcher teams up with Fantastic Twins for hazy dancefloor ballad "In My Head". Meanwhile, Kompakt's disco king of the hearts Jürgen Paape presents dreamy anthem "Always Disko", manipulating the space-time continuum with reversed vocals and plenty of ballroom glitz. Dutch duo Weval indulge in their expectedly brilliant beatmaking with the slow-burning, emotional "Metazoa", grooving nicely alongside the heartwarming neo-folk house of Chris Klopfer's "Ashamed (Raquet & Stetter Edit)" and Max Scholpp's hypnotic late-night electronica "The Dream". Jörg Burger helms the Nu U Orchestra together with Julienne Dessagne of Saschienne and Fantastic Twins fame, resulting in the flamboyant, guitar-infused pop jam "Ambrosia". And Voigt & Voigt return to their personal brand of psychedelic trance techno minimalism on "Tribute To A Greek God", a fittingly idiosyncratic contribution to the merry band of stand-out tracks collected on Total 17.

VONTIER, INIGO Aluxes 12"
Mexican producer Iñigo Vontier releases his fifth EP, including a remix from Tolouse Low Trax. "Aluxes" opens a channel to occult forces. The EP's title track, with its sparse, unfathomable voices and its bouncing, metered rhythm, is like a serene spell. The facetious "Patito" and its stubborn metallic rhythm brings back Vontier's precious dark disco essence. Detlef Weinrich's, a member of Kreidler, tasks his Tolouse Low Trax side project with remixing "Macaco". His remix is light-years from weekender minimal techno, and closer to Dopplereffekt.

Klaus Schulze about En=Trance: 'En=Trance is a 'pure Schulze' record, I made it all on my own. I have to say I only get other musicians when I notice that the song has something missing. For instance if I feel that the song must have a violin I call (Thomas) Kagermann, and if I need a guitar I would always ask Manuel Göttsching or Michael Lücker. "The first time I heard of Mattes Schwarz, someone called him 'Stecken-Mattes'. Stecken was a defining, if almost secret, Cologne dance music venue of the 2000s and early 2010s, a minuscule basement without curfew and seemingly any other restrictions . . . While he got heavily involved in Cologne's BMX scene of the '90s, he never really stopped, and during the main years of being known as Stecken-Mattes and playing there each Friday night, he coincidently lived in Magazine Record's home base . . . VON DEURNE & THE POLITICS, DIETER Dieter Von Deurne & The Politics LP
LP version. Includes download code. A return to simpler set-ups and times, Antwerp-based musician Dieter Sermeus has started a new chapter in the wake of his acclaimed releases with The Go Find: He is back with a new band called Dieter von Deurne & The Politics, a new formation that sees him revisit and update his indie rocking '90s roots. Harking back to an even earlier band called Orange Black, a project he formed at 15 and which supported bands such as Pavement, Seam, and Stereolab, this self-titled debut is many things at once: a collective reassurance and rocking-off-chest, an ode to wild simplicity and more direct impacts, less irony, and some good old, heart-felt, fuzzy crunch. Inspired by the very bands Sermeus used to open for with Orange Black as well as classics such as Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr., and The Modern Lovers, it's the kind of album that makes you want to immediately hitch a ride to sunnier climes. Far from being merely nostalgic, it's a timeless road trip recorded by a musician who's always been fond of walking. Jump starting the old engine with "Nuclear Love", the soothing, mending, reassuring quality of this release is apparent after that first wild-haired guitar solo. An album "about these weird times we are living in" and "the Trumpness", as the singer puts it, a lot of its essence is hidden in the lyrics of "Channel": "It's a beautiful life/It's a beautiful lie," goes the punch line before the tune explodes into a wild jam session. At their softest and most well-balanced, there's the pop bliss of "Heart-Shaped Stone" and the hypnotic harmonies of "I'm On Trial", only to be washed away by the straight-forward fun of "The Law Of Misunderstanding". Elsewhere, there's organ-based minimalism ("I Guess I Needed You More") and acoustic confessions ("Jupiter's Moon"), sonic book reviews wrapped in mellow life ruminations ("Knausgard'"), explosive guitar-shredding ecstasy with multiple ignition stages ("Too Much"), until closing track "You" rounds off the album with its melancholy pop innocence. Dieter von Deurne & The Politics' debut album arrives from the land of illuminated, orange freeways and, refreshingly, it doesn't even try to be any kind of new black. Instead, it just oozes that longing for transformation. For never-forgotten hooks presented in a new light. In a way, it's 1993 done à la 2017: ain't no better ointment to ease those current ailments anyway.

LALI PUNA Two Windows LP
LP version. Printed inner sleeve; Includes download code. The world has changed rapidly since Lali Puna released Our Inventions in 2010 (MORR 098CD/LP), a fact that is also reflected in the band's fifth album, Two Windows. Written and produced over almost two years, these twelve new songs meet those changes head-on both musically and lyrically. Songwriter and singer Valerie Trebeljahr and long-time band members Christian "Taison" Heiß and Christoph Brandner -- Two Windows is the first album recorded after Markus Acher's departure from the band -- opted for a more dancefloor-friendly sound while not neglecting the pop sentiments rooted in Lali Puna's sound. Taking its cues from a brand of music spearheaded by the likes of Caribou, Ada, or even Mount Kimbie, Two Windows sounds lush and focused, balancing the emotional qualities of Trebeljahr's songwriting with energetic rhythms. A tour in South Korea rekindled Trebeljahr's urge to make music after she had focused her career as a journalist as well as on her family. While she was mostly working on new material with Heiß, Trebeljahr also sought out collaborations: Keith Tenniswood (Two Lone Swordsmen) contributes as Radioactive Man; Dntel, aka Jimmy Tamborello, is featured; harpist and Ghostly International alumna Mary Lattimore and experimental artist Midori Hirano (MimiCof) also appear. While Two Windows is thus partly a collaborative effort, it is first and foremost an album about emancipation and a new beginning for Lali Puna. The album explores topics including personal freedom, the presence of surveillance technologies in our lives, and the progressive gentrification of urban centers. Two Windows is not an explicitly political album however. In fact, much like a window, Trebeljahr's lyrics always allow their listeners to look at things from two sides. While they emphasize problems, they also empathize with those who have to put up with them. Trebeljahr has not come to preach, but wants to forge emotional connections. Musically speaking, the lyrical subtleties are reflected in a well-defined sound that likes to shake things up as well. Gender-flipping an old Kings Of Leon tune to present a great piece of music in an entirely different context? You possibly wouldn't expect that on a Lali Puna record, but as Trebeljahr sings herself in "Wonderland": "Cause all things will change / Cause all things must change". Two Windows, an album about emancipation, presents the Lali Puna sound in a different light than before. Glossy artwork and printed inner sleeve.

SAIZ, SUSO Rainworks 2LP
Following 2016's compilation of archival recordings by Suso Saiz titled Odisea (MFM 009CD/LP), Music From Memory mark their 20th release with an album of new works by the Spanish electronic music pioneer. Recorded in Madrid between January and February 2016, this is Suso Saiz's first release of new music in nearly ten years. Titled Rainworks, this double LP release was originally part of a commission from a Canary Islands water company. The first ideas for the compositions developed from a documentary that Suso had seen suggesting the possibility of water molecules having their own memory. As Suso himself explains, he became fascinated with the possibility of an eternal being, changing its cyclical condition from solid to gaseous state, travelling through and between the Earth and the Sky, as a witness and keeper of the true history of Earth and Mankind. Suso, his son Emil Saiz, and pianist Raph Killhertz set out to explore this metaphysical process of cyclical movement through music in Rainworks. Developing from the original commissioned tracks into a much more elaborate project, the album's process became something of a mystical journey, drawing on aspects of minimalism and modernism. The music is also embedded in textured natural soundscapes and spoken word passages which were recorded and processed by Suso himself. Despite having the immediacy of an improvised piece, Rainworks was in entirely composed by Suso. Whilst on one hand it appears very much as an electronic album there are in fact many acoustic elements to the recording. A resonant piano (a grand piano re-amplified using its resonant box and harp to generate effects) as well as guitars (with simple effects) are played in Suso's inimitable hypnotic way, slowly drawing the listener into a transportive state or lucid dream.

Now-Again Records has enjoyed a long and creative partnership with Munich-based multi-instrumentalist JJ Whitefield, creative force behind the Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers and Karl Hector & The Malcouns. Rodinia, his latest project, is quite different than anything that's come from his oeuvre to date, but follows in the line of the Poets of Rhythm's great Discern/Define, as it reaches back to Krautrock's experimental heyday but pushes its boundaries with a post-hip-hop approach. Rodinia's first album, Drumside/Dreamside, featured two, side-long suites, with synthesizers taking the fore on an overarching ambient approach (featuring over-dubbed reeds, drums and guitar, and self-made Moroccan field recordings introducing the project on its Drumside.) For Ex Anima, Rodinia has incorporated more of the mid-70s approach of Krautrock forebears Neu!, Cluster and Harmonia, with shorter, self-contained songs. The result is winsome and exploratory, respectfully distanced from the past's trappings while celebrating a musical spirit still very much alive and influential. TOLLIVER, KIM Come And Get Me I'm Ready CD
"A classic album from an unsung heroine of soul. Kim Tolliver is a name that has been unfairly lost to the annals of music history. For much of the 1960s she became renowned among R&B music circles for her dramatic, Southern-fried ballads, and emotionally heavy renditions of classic blues and soul songs, as well as for her songwriting prowess, having penned numerous singles for fellow soul singer Margie Joseph. From 1967 all the way to 1981 she cut single after single for Northern Soul treasure trove labels like Castro Records, Rojac Records, Tay-Ster, and many more, but throughout her long and illustrious career only ever recorded two studio full-lengths. Her first studio album, 1971's Passing Clouds (Released under the moniker Kimberley Briggs) passed by with little fanfare, but it was 1973's Come And Get Me I'm Ready that made her a name in deep soul. Though the album was also commercially unsuccessful, it reached great critical acclaim for its complex melodies, solid arrangements, and premium grade soul songwriting from Tolliver, and her then husband Fred Briggs, a fellow singer/songwriter. The album drew heavily from the classic Memphis sound, with big brass, and high-energy balladeering, all made cohesive by Tolliver's commanding vocal presence. Though Tolliver would eventually leave the music business, and eventually succumb to Alzheimer's in 2007, her unsung legacy remains in choice cuts like 'The Other Side Of Town', 'The Way He Used To', and her own take on Gwen McCrae's 'I'm Losing The Feeling'."

TAYLOR, HOLLIS Absolute Bird 2CD
"This is an extraordinary and important work, breathtaking in its apparent simplicity but raised on a lifetime of study, thought and contrariness. All 41 tracks are, in one way or another, built around transcriptions or recordings of the Australian pied butcherbird -- mining every possible variation. Each composition pairs a bird, or other environmental sounds, with one or several instruments: standard, soprano, bass and contrabass recorders, violin, vibraphone, bassoon, viola, flute, cello, bass clarinet, vocal ensemble, bass or string quartet -- all seamlessly linked together. As with Berio's cadenzas, virtuosic and extended techniques are standard, and long stretches of each CD side are programmed for continuous and highly contrasted listening. The featured soloists are all recognized virtuosi. This is an important release because although it's clearly music, and clearly composed, it's also birdsong -- and we're not sure, culturally, whether we think that's music or not. Then there are the categorically non-musical sounds that play a central and continuous role. It's a CD that will attract attention in experimental and contemporary circles precisely because it puts these elements together in a new and provocative way. There's a story here. The recording quality is excellent, the performers, human and otherwise, virtuosic (without making a fuss about it) and the sweep quietly vast. Both CDs come in the inner covers of a very strong and substantial hard-cover book containing 48 full-colour pages of notes, reflections, explanations and photographs."

BRAT, THE Straight Outta East L.A. 2LP
"The Brat was a Chicano punk rock ensemble originating from the barrios of the East Los Angeles, California. Its three core members consisted of lead singer Teresa Covarrubias, lead guitarist Rudy Medina, and alternate lead & rhythm guitar player Sid Medina. From their conception in 1979 to their eventual break-up in 1985, The Brat contributed to the customization and intermeshing of multiple musical and cultural models that culminated in the distinct East Los Angeles, Chicano punk sound. The Brat, a hardworking and politically-conscious band, nurtured the Do-It-Yourself punk scene of East L.A., which was defined by unofficial venues and backyard shows because the wealthier West L.A. circuit controlled the popular market. By the time the famous Club Vex was founded in 1980 - by Los Illegals frontman Willie Herron, who desired an official venue to host East L.A.'s numerous underrated bands, who were mostly Chicano - The Brat had become one of the biggest acts in the area. In late 1980 The Brat was signed as the flagship band of the upstart label of another local punk group, The Plugz' Fatima Records. This collaboration resulted in The Brat's only recorded album, the EP Attitudes, a five-song collection of some of their popular originals featuring Covarrubias' aggressive, yet melodic, punk vocals critiquing social inequality and Rudy Medina's - who was called Rudy Brat - urgent guitar hooks over drums with a reggae feel. The Brat never found breakthrough success and remained an underground East L.A. Chicano act until breaking up in the late '80s. Contains all 5 tracks from the long 'out of print' Attitudes EP, the rest of the songs were performed and recorded during the few years The Brat were together but never released, Most of those recordings were unmixed or were left unfinished until members came back into the studio and finished the songs in recent years."

FORT ROMEAU Emulators 12"
Fort Romeau's second outing for Running Back is another exercise in dancefloor synthesis. Emulators greets with the grey realism of an E-mu II. Purchased first by none other than Stevie Wonder, immortalized in Ferris Bueller's ode to absenteeism, and the original loon sampler, there is nothing this machine cannot do for you -- the same goes for Fort Romeau. His disco-informed, trance-induced tracks that usually end on a high note, are elevated by ambient soundscapes that end with a bang and sugarcoat your warm-up slots, with a bird-heavy bonus beat.

RUIZ, VICTOR Red Lights 12"
Victor Ruiz provides four tracks of uncompromising, precise techno. "Red Lights" is a spacey journey to the heart of the dancefloor - shaped for maximum effect on big room sound-systems. Dutchman Bart Skils a sick "Motor Speedway" mix - somewhere between the krautrock influences of Kraftwerk and the sleek techno of Detroit's second wave. "Nevermind" sees Victor Ruiz do what he does best - exploring track dynamics within a perfectly developed journey. Label boss Oliver Huntemann provides the remix - steeping the track down in his signature sound - deep and streamlined, yet full of emotion.

HUNTEMANN, OLIVER Rotlicht & Poltergeist 12"
Two key tracks from bossman Oliver Huntemann's forthcoming Propaganda album. "Rotlicht" is a precision-honed instrument of techno weaponry -- hard as nails and featuring epic and mind-bending breakdowns. Egyptian DJ and producer Raxon reworks the track into a deep and solid groover with plenty of attitude. "Poltergeist" is a journey into Huntemann's feel for sound design and space in a club context -- seemingly simple before hitting home with shifting, evolving grooves and haunting synth blasts. Russian Maksim Dark adds his own interpretation of "Poltergeist", edging up the darkness a little more and producing a growling, tough techno workout.

SALOMAN, GABRIEL Movement Building Vol. 3 LP
Shelter Press has present the third and final volume of Gabriel Saloman's Movement Building series. For fans of Saloman's post-Yellow Swans work -- an already dense catalog of darkly cinematic compositions mostly conceived as accompaniment to some of Vancouver's edgier contemporary dance companies -- Movement Building Vol. III is not only a much anticipated conclusion to this trilogy, it is the most fully realized album in years. Whereas Movement Building Vol. I (SHELTER 051LP, 2014) and Vol. II (SHELTER 063LP, 2015) acted primarily as documentation of time-based artworks, Movement Building Vol. III offers a more coherent and narratively rich album that will appeal to admirers of Soldier's Requiem (MIA 026CD/LP, 2013). Listeners will recognize the emotive bowed strings, militant percussion, and searing guitar eruptions that evoked memory and trauma in that previous album. Joining this pallet are other familiar Saloman sounds: shoegaze washes of distorted guitar, minimalist piano attacks, melancholic appregiated melodies, and a patina of harsh noise. Added to this is a more 21st century approach to drums and bass, perhaps an effect of his collaborations with producer Michael Red in their dub ambient project Chambers. Saloman's music has never sat comfortably in any genre, sharing with a select cohort of other artists (Stephen O'Malley, Lawrence English, Grouper, Kreng, Tim Hecker, among others) an ambiguous position between "modern classical", "electronic music", and the more outer limits of metal. Movement Building Vol. III doesn't clarify as much as it expands Saloman's oeuvre further into an idiosyncratic musical no-man's land that fails to be faithful to any popular musical trend -- contemporary, retro, or futurist. Movement Building Vol. III's themes are taken from the dance it was composed for, 2015's What Belongs To You, created by long-time collaborator Vanessa Goodman. That work sent its dancers through a physical journey exploring the needs of the body, for shelter, for love, and for self-actualization, roughly aligned to Abraham Maslow's "hierarchy of needs". Though this record was recorded in 2015, Movement Building Vol. III could be the perfect album for the current era of civilizational near-collapse, whether at the hands of maniacal politicians, the slow burn of the Anthropocene, or the constant enclosure of the corporate-driven, social media enabled surveillance state. The collection of these works allows one to see clearly Saloman's techniques and approaches to a relatively limited number of instruments -- guitar, percussion, occasional piano, and tape.

PAUVROS & GABY BIZIEN, JEAN-FRANCOIS No Man's Land LP
Souffle Continu Records present a reissue of Jean-Francois Pauvros and Gaby Bizien's No Man's Land, originally released on Un-Deux-Trois in 1976. Whether it is with the label Palm, or for Un-Deux-Trois, Jef Gilson has produced some of the best albums of French free jazz and improvisation. But that's not all: he also offered perfect recording conditions enabling some of the fresh young talent to emerge, including Daunik Lazro, André Jaume, and Jean-François Pauvros, all three of whom released their first recordings on one of those labels. Recorded by Jean-François Pauvros (guitar, but not only...) alongside Gaby Bizien (drums, percussion, aquatic trombone, marimba, bird calls), and, of course, produced by the audacious Jef Gilson, the appropriately named No Man's Land had virtually no equivalent in France (nor worldwide) when it came out in 1976. Radical, free, primitive, timeless: in the image of the musicians, it is not for nothing that it appears in the famous Nurse With Wound list of major influences concocted in 1979. No label can be placed on this vertiginous sensory adventure: an explosive flow of shrapnel and tearing intensity, full of mystery and life. To be clear, No Man's Land is the key recording of French improvisation. So much so that it is difficult to imagine it coming out of nowhere, the two musicians must surely have been listening to the latest forays of the British Music Improvisation Company and decided to reply in their own way. But not at all! If you believe what the protagonists have to say, these experiments were carried out in secret isolation, and with a total lack of awareness of everything that was going on in the avant-garde of improvised music. Indeed, it was only after the album was published that Jean-François Pauvros and Gaby Bizien learned that there was a movement going on with similar ideas. That tells us something about the level of invention of this album, which comfortably bears comparison to other similar duos such as Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley, Fred Frith and Chris Cutler, John Russell and Roger Turner, or Gary Smith and John Stevens... The Frenchmen were well served by their unbridled variety and poly-instrumentalism. Licensed from Jean-François Pauvros. Obi strip; Reverse printing; Edition of 500.

PAUVROS & GABY BIZIEN, JEAN-FRANCOIS Pays Noir LP
Previously unreleased, the three tracks on Pays Noir come from recording sessions held at the same time as those for the cult album No Man's Land (FFL 026LP), produced by Jef Gilson in 1976, and published on vinyl by Souffle Continu Records in 2017. Singled out at the time of its release by Actuel, Rock & Folk, and Melody Maker, the tabula rasa of No Man's Land is the result of free-flowing experiments born of chance, if the two musicians are to be believed. Indeed, their approach to free improvisation was uninfluenced by those in the know of what was going on in such circles, which makes it even more incredible. To emphasize the point, the saxophonist Evan Parker (already a leader in the field) remarked on the album at the time, surprised by the innovation of the two Frenchmen. Brimming with the same fervor as No Man's Land, mainly on guitar and drums (but once again, not only...), Jean-François Pauvros and Gaby Bizien invent an amazing unbridled chaos of instinctive combinations, which are the fruit of their immense complicity, born of days on end playing together, trying to transform the rebelliousness of rock into free-form sparks unlike anything heard before, and which are often poetic -- ah, that final song! Carried along by the frenzied clatter of Gaby Bizien, Jean-François Pauvros emerges without doubt as one the great French improvising guitarists, alongside Gérard Marais (Dharma Quintet, Stu Martin Trio), Joseph Dejean (Cohelmec Ensemble, The Full Moon Ensemble), Raymond Boni (who, like Pauvros and Bizien, is present on the Nurse With Wound list), Dominique Répécaud, Noël Akchoté, and Jean-Marc Montera. Furthermore, the duo has a crazy intensity heard only on recordings by duos such as Bill Orcutt and Chris Corsano, Arto Lindsay and Paal Nilssen-Love, Thurston Moore and John Moloney, and Mesa Of The Lost Women. A kind of French no wave ahead of its time. Licensed from Jean-François Pauvros. Obi strip; Reverse printing; Edition of 500.

BERROCAL, JAC La Nuit Est Au Courant LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl edition of Jac Berrocal's La Nuit Est Au Courant, originally released on In Situ in 1991. Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" on the radio, Renaissance motets, his grandfather in a Zouave military band, Syrian deserts... Columns of tanks in the streets, the soundtrack to Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped (1956), Juan Manuel Fangio's car, the fall of the Berlin wall: from the first and fantastic Musiq Musik (1973), this is where Jac Berrocal's trumpet comes from -- an indescribable cataclysm to which he constantly returns for inspiration. When he published, at the beginning of the 1990s, La Nuit Est Au Courant, Jac Berrocal had already recorded his famous "Rock'n'Roll Station" and collaborated three times with Nurse With Wound, he figures on their 1979 list as an important avant-garde influence. In Situ, the French label which published this album, produced several other historically important albums in the same year by people like Steve Lacy, François Tusques, Un Drame Musical Instantané, and Daunik Lazro in a duo with Joe McPhee: such were the times. Backed by two bassists (including the jazz critic Francis Marmande) and a drummer, Jacques Thollot (who recorded Jeter La Girafe À La Mer (1971), one of the highlights of the French underground), Jac Berrocal does here what he does best: defy labels and slalom between genres; constructing a strange kaleidoscope of enchanting mish-mash. "What is vulgar... ", he states, "... is to refuse what pleases you". Jac Berrocal refuses nothing and tries everything he can imagine. With the trumpet multiplied here and there by reverb, the nocturnal perambulations for insomniacs of La Nuit Au Courant make it an ambient album with Prague, Sartrouville, Ivry-sur-Seine or East Berlin amongst the backdrops... An album of what Fernando Arrabal called "panic music", an elegant term for "no wave"... Listening to it over and again, it sounds like Don Cherry jamming with David Bowie and Brian Eno in Berlin. There is one thing you should know: Jac Berrocal is an intrepid man. He stands exposed -- and "sullies his soul", on the edge of the precipice. The nights are all-knowing. Licensed from In Situ. Obi strip; Reverse printing; Includes four-page booklet; Edition of 700.

75 DOLLAR BILL Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock CD
CD release of one of 2016's most acclaimed albums, the first release on Glitterbeat's tak:til imprint. 75 Dollar Bill's second full-length crashed onto many of the year's most prestigious best-of lists, including those of The Wire, Uncut, The Village Voice, and more. The NYC-based duo of Rick Brown and Che Chen creates hypnotic, pulsing music that weaves an ecstatic line from raw electric blues, Arabic modes, and entrancing folk minimalism back to the streets of New York. Notes by Rick Brown: "I feel very lucky to have wound up playing in 75 Dollar Bill with Che. I'll take some credit for the early setup, as I pursued the idea of us jamming together for a few years before we actually made some music together. But when it comes to focusing our sound, putting together a good set-list, imagining how to expand the group with guests and designing almost all of the visual/package aspects, Che has taken the lead. Obviously, he is responsible for his own parts and playing and his interest in the Arabic modes of Mauritanian music has marked our sound quite a bit but I have brought some things, too. The plywood crate I play is a big factor, defining, by its positive qualities (a nice warm 'boom' sound) as well as by its simplicity, what we're likely to do in the percussion realm. WMPPRR, this new record, differs quite a bit from the previous one, notably in the rhythmic 'tone.' Wooden Bag (released in 2015 on Other Music Recording Co.) was all forward momentum, stomping and shaking, but the new record explores a long-standing interest of mine: odd and 'compound' meters. In most of my previous musical activities, I've convinced my partners to delve into this, but in 75 Dollar Bill it has just felt natural and I believe Che's modal investigations and melodic/harmonic tendencies enhance (and are enhanced by) this combination. The current record differs from the last in another big way: reinforcements! Over our few years together, Che and I have frequently had friends play with us at some of our gigs. There have been all sorts of permutations of instruments and some great friends/players who don't all appear on this record but here we are lucky to have a bunch of them: Cheryl Kingan (of The Scene Is Now) on baritone and alto saxes, Andrew Lafkas (of Todd Capp's Mystery Train) on contrabass, Karen Waltuch (of Zeke & Karen) on viola, Rolyn Hu (of True Primes) on trumpet and Carey Balch (of Knoxville's Give Thanks) on floor tom. 75 Dollar Bill's plans for the future involve much more playing with these friends and others in bigger and smaller combos -- as well as me and Che stripped back to the core guitar and crate duo. For the present, though, please enjoy Wood/Metal/Plastic/ Pattern/Rhythm/Rock."

DINOSAUR L 24-24 Music 2LP
2017 repress, originally released 2007. "Dinosaur L is an alias donned by Arthur Russell, a man whose contribution to dance music from the late seventies and through the eighties was formidable but only quietly acknowledged. His innovative and left field dance records were way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time. He was a cellist who studied classical and Indian music. As well as his great strides in dance music he was also involved in the New York downtown avant-garde music scene and produced some albums in a more avant-garde/experimental vein as well as trying his own unique approach to pop. He scored several hits on the underground New York dance scene at clubs like The Paradise Garage (Larry Levan was a huge supporter). His biggest tunes, 'Go Bang!' and 'Is It All Over My Face?' were worldwide club hits and are still played today as classics. His records have influenced the scene from his first dance record in 1979 to the present day and his work has been much sampled. Sadly Arthur died in 1992, but his music lives on and his influence is still felt on the dance music scene, his tunes still sound great and are still moving many dancers around the world, so his spirit lives on. Sleeping Bag Records and Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to present Dinosaur L's 24->24 Music for the first time ever on double LP. Includes the original album tracklisting plus rare 12" remixes and edits."

KIRCHIN, BASIL Basil Kirchin Is My Friend: A Trunk Records Sampler LP
An awe-inspiring sampler of the late, great musical polymath's music. From pop punk pop to field recordings, jazz, horror film music, ambient sounds, experimental ideas and all points in between. Many tracks have not been released before. Basil Kirchin was a unique talent. A man brought up as a drummer in the post-war big band era, he soon shunned the sounds of London ballrooms for world travel, marijuana, and spiritual enlightenment. On his return to London in the mid-1960s, he started work on experimental "sound picture music", a direction that led him into horror film music, library music, and eventually, to field recordings. He then developed the idea of slowing down the sounds of bird, insects, animals, autistic children -- anything he recorded in fact -- to reveal the hidden particles of sound that made them up. Mixing this with free jazz improvisation in 1969, he developed a new, peculiar sound that is now known as "ambient". Here, in this unique Trunk Record's sampler, the label offers a fascinating musical glimpse into his world, bringing together work from three decades, plus parts of a long conversation between Jonny Trunk and Basil Kirchin, recorded a few months before Kirchin died. There is unreleased film music, field recordings including autistic children from Schurmatt, music for advertising, the opening of Quantum (JBH 003CD), brilliant mixes of jazz and birds ("Charcoal Sketches"), the newly discovered digital post punk classic "Silicon Chip", plus brilliant and moving homages to his life with Esther, his wife. Together it makes extraordinary listening. All cues mastered and sequenced by Jon Brooks, AKA The Advisory Circle.

On the deeper and more melodious "You Want A Cigarette", Weiss's vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant TB-303 lines, rush-inducing chords, and clattering machine percussion. On "Space Ghetto (Booty)", Weiss offers his own unique take on electro-funk with kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs, and funk-fueled synth-bass. La Fleur puts her stamp on the remix, keeping the riff but adding gravitas with a rhythmic bassline. "GameOvr" is a strong techno track that keeps with Sasha's constant focus on the future. Cassy remixes the title track, delivering a harder-edged driving cut with a heavier kick drum, echoing chords, and hypnotic percussion.
