PESSIMIST Pessimist CD
With his ice-cold debut album, Pessimist delivers a defining work which represents the culmination of nearly a decade of collective research and development in underground drum'n'bass. It is hard to think of any producer, past or present, who has so skillfully and successfully bridged the sonics and sensibilities of d'n'b and techno. In fact, Pessimist makes drum'n'bass work as techno: combining the monotone, infinite-horizon quality of the latter with the rhythmic swerve and soundsystem heft of the former. Cutting edge techno-d'n'b hybrids form the backbone of this, his first LP, but there's more to it than that. Out of its relentlessly noir, paranoid, smoked-out dubscape, emerge fierce, Babylon-shall-fall jungle tear-outs ("Through The Fog"); zoned, acidic rave ("Peter Hitchens"); downtempo breakbeat excursions ("Glued"); sleek and rude "Balaklava"-esque steppers ("Spirals"); and passages of bleak, bombed-out industrial ambience. At times it feels like the missing link between British Murder Boys and Source Direct, or what might have happened if late '90s UK jungle-ists had listened more closely to Chain Reaction. The ruthless minimalism, and the tension which comes of that restraint; the swing and propulsion of the drum programming; the abyssal reverbs and long trails of delay; the deep and body-numbing sub-bass; the uncompromising palette of blacks and blues. Features Loop Faction and Overlook.

MORRICONE, ENNIO L'Alibi LP
Dagored present a reissue of Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for the 1969 film L'Alibi. Written and directed by and starring Vittorio Gassman, Adolfo Celi, and Luciano Lucignani, L'Alibi is a 1969 comedy drama about a trio of friends who reunite after many years apart. The score brims with '60s cool, lots of cheerful tunes, pop arrangements, lounge jazz, and dazzling vocals, all of them featuring that unmistakable Morricone air. It's light music that is highly entertaining, listenable throughout, and full of delightful little touches. "Canzone Della Libertà'" is an unusual piece performed by the legendary Sergio Endrigo and the I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandro Alessandroni, which includes snippets from famous speeches about freedom; its moody, catchy main theme, with an unusual instrumentation and percussive accompaniment style, make a great combination. This marks the first time the complete score has appeared on vinyl. Green vinyl; Edition of 500.

HEINDORF/VICTOR YOUNG, RAY For Whom The Bell Tolls LP
Doxy present a reissue of Ray Heindorf's interpretation of Victor Young's film score for the 1942 film For Whom The Bells Toll. Heindorf's interpretation was released in 1958. Longtime Hollywood music director for Warner Bros., Raymond "Ray" Heindorf is one of the most important and prolific American film score composers; his career brought him eighteen Academy Award nominations and three Oscars. Based on Ernest Hemingway's masterpiece, For Whom The Bell Tolls is the 1958 recording of Victor Young's score for the same film that came out in 1942. The vibrant, dramatic emotionalism of Hemingway's novel is revealed with immense impact in Heindorf's interpretation. The sound of the bell tolling, the violent crescendo of the violins, the deafening roar of war in all its turbulence is a thrilling musical experience; one that does not easily escape the listener. Careful layers of rich acid riffs and precise placement of atmospheric details and fine-tuned textures -- this clearly is the work of a producer on top his game. RAINFOREST SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT Jungle Black Magic And Highlands Green Sorcery LP
Released on vinyl for the time, Jungle Black Magic And Highlands Green Sorcery is the most substantial and disorientating release in the Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement vinyl series yet, clocking in at 40 minutes and deploying some of the most uncomfortably humid productions in Dominick Fernow's arsenal. Jungle Black Magic marks the third in a series of first-time vinyl editions of early RSE material. It was originally released as a double cassette release in 2012 in an edition of 49. Stalking phantom apparitions and infrasonic illusions from the dankest sectors of his imagination, Fernow plays voodoo tricks on charred opener "The Case Of The Male Witch From Goroka" -- a tropical downer underpinned by larger than life sub-bass rumblings and what sound like field recordings of YouTube rainforest nightscapes rendered in abstract, digital form. "The Verdict Handed Down By A Kangaroo Court" furthers trance induction with a more tribal alignment of drums, before "For The Next Three Days There Was An Eerie Silence In The Village" ends the set with a completely bewildering alignment of synthetic sounds designed to play tricks on your senses; somewhere between a dark meditation aid and a reworked soundtrack to Predator (1987) -- the vibe exceptionally heatsick and paranoid. These pieces operate in paradoxical dimensions where the calls of exotic birds convey a denseness that's at odds with acres of negative space. It feels like standing in a deforested land at the edge of thick jungle, the effect is uncannily transportive; your mind constantly grappling with contrasting sensory triggers. How can something this ice cold also convey such suffocating heat? It makes for an incredible, pretty much unique listening experience; like fourth world ambience but in some kind of Lynchian above-the-convenience store dimension. Remastered by Paul Corley; Cut at Dubplates & Mastering. RIYL: Coil, Demdike Stare, Prurient, Brian Eno & Jon Hassell's 1980 album Fourth World (GB 019CD/LP). Edition of 500.

PRURIENT Unknown Rains LP
A vinyl issue of Prurient's Unknown Rains, originally released as a limited edition cassette in 2016. Utterly destructive and heart-wrenching power noise and catharsis from the don gorgon of Hospital Productions, making his first album confession since the release of the stunning Frozen Niagara Falls (2015). Taking almost 40 minutes to spell-out a litany of ills that mark up as classic, pain-saturated Prurient in contrast with the more layered, nuanced narrative and more complex production values of his last album, the set boots-off with the infernal backdraft and flagellating vox of the album's most succinct piece, "Let Your Mind Free (Whip The Corpse)". Sharp blasts of noise distortion conceal a forlorn Fernow vocal, like that classic Lynchian conceit of obscuring dialogue at the most crucial moment, perversely enhancing narrative through obstruction. It's a brilliant, disturbing, opener. Sore chord progressions and those same distanced vox crushed by needling distortion fill the nine minutes of "Before Rain Becomes Snow" with much emotional impact; revealing a sort of disturbed and buried shoegaze appeal that sounds like a Grouper x Prurient recording session from another dimension. However, the album's most captivating track comes with the gaping black-holer, "In The Ruins Of My Brother" -- where the distortion dissipates to the edges, allowing vast blooming bass flares and slithering high registers to wrap around the neck with a spacious, full-spectrum dominance that recalls Prurient's Pleasure Ground (HOS 467LP) classic, before "Red Poppy Laughter" slips back into an opiated sort of naval-gazing noise bliss. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

LEE, BUNNY "STRIKER" Strikes Back: The Sound Of Studio One LP
LP version. The sound of Studio One can be identified by the great singers that it cultivated along the many great songs that these singers released. But as Studio One's dominance was slowly pulled away by the up-and-coming new breed of producers, many of the artists would inevitably end up working for these new camps, and so the songs and singers found a new audience. The reggae sound of the Studio One would make a great combination and the man to pull this was together Bunny Lee. The 1960s in Jamaica was run by two main factions: Coxsone's Studio One and Duke Reid's Treasure Isle. These two leading protagonists saw what some of the other great soundsystem men like "Tom The Great Sebastian" had not taken onboard, that when the tunes they imported began to dry up from the USA, their future lied in producing music, tunes that suited the musical styles that the people of Jamaica still enjoyed. By the late 1960s, this supremacy was being challenged by the up-and-coming new producers on the scene, Lee Perry being one, and the other being "Ghost of the Studios" himself, Bunny Lee. Bunny "Striker" Lee may have inherited the moniker "Striker" from his liking of a particular TV show called The Hitch-Hiker, but it would soon stand also for the considerable hits he would obtain as he was declared producer of the year in Jamaica in 1969, 1970,1971, and 1972. For this release, Kingston Sounds have compiled many of the great hits that Bunny Lee recorded with the singers that had originally cut at the famed Studio One. Bunny Lee's sprinkling of magic over some classic tunes... the sound of Studio One backed up this time Bunny "Striker" Lee's set of star musicians, The Aggravators. Proving you can't keep a good tune down, or a great producer pushing forward... Bunny Lee strikes back... Features: Dennis Brown, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Jackie Edwards, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, John Holt & The Paragons, Dave Baker, Pat Kelly, Cornell Campbell and The Eternals, and Johnny Clarke.

CACTUS Long Island NY 1971 LP
Originally cast as a supergroup, Cactus was the brainchild of Long Island boys Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, two ferociously talented players who had cut their musical teeth in the pioneering heavy psychedelic group Vanilla Fudge with Atlantic in the late '60s. In January 1971, the band performed before a small invited audience in Ultrasonic Studios in their native Long Island and plunged into their past three albums to deliver a blitzkrieg that declared their affection for boogie with an electrifying demeanor. This performance also signaled the closure of a chapter in the Cactus story, with guitarist Jim McCarty and vocalist Rusty Day leaving shortly after, before the remaining band recorded their 1972 fourth album, 'Ot 'N' Sweaty. Captured here is a unique facet of heavy blues rock with the entire WLIR-FM broadcast of this set, digitally remastered, exposing a robust powerhouse performance from a profoundly underrated band. There have been several high profile anniversary reunions for Woodstock 10, 25 and 30 years after this iconic event first took place, but one of the most interesting occurred when many of the original musicians converged on Long Island's Parr Meadows in Brookhaven, New York to celebrate the tenth anniversary. Unlike later events, this was a true reunion for many of the musicians who played the 1969 festival. Johnny Winter was undoubtedly one of the main attractions and festival high points and the combination of Winter with Bobby Torello and Jon Paris makes for immense impact both on the ears and the memory banks. TURRONERO, EL New Hondo LP

There were two labels in Spain during the '70s which were essential to understand the birth of the rumba-flamenco-pop genre: Belter and Discophon. Thanks to the work of adventurous in-house producers and sound engineers like Josep Llobell, Joan Barcons and Lauren Postigo, funk, rock, disco and jazz arrangements were incorporated to recordings of folkloric flamenco singers and rumba bands. The result was explosive and the Spanish market was flooded with "gipsy-rock" or "rumba pop" 45s and LPs, some of them highly sought-after today by international DJs looking for exotic beats. New Hondo is an otherworldly mix of cosmic disco, funk, boogie, and traditional flamenco styles by Spanish "cantaor" El Turronero. FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND Satori LP
2017 repress. Deluxe LP format; 180 gram pressing. Reissue of the second Flower Travellin' Band album, originally issued by Atlantic Records in Japan in 1971. Satori is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass. Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style turned him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more.

Throughout, the sweet falsetto lead of Ted Mills caresses each lyric by Bobby Eli, Allan Felder and Norman Harris to create a mellow mélange of sonic satisfaction. On their second album, the group kept to their winning formula. 'Three Ring Circus' is an apt follow-up to 'Sideshow', while 'Talking to Myself', and 'Maybe Just Maybe' plumb a more pensive and blue side of the group's catalog. CLARKE, JOHNNY Enter Into His Gates With Praise CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Johnny Clarke's Enter Into His Gates With Praise, originally released in 1975. Along with his rival Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. Having grown up next door to a popular sound system on Waltham Park Road in western Kingston, Clarke's early fascination with music led him to hang out at Studio One with Jacob Miller while still at school. He then made the rounds of talent shows with Barry Brown, Sugar Minott, and the Diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist Glen Stair, which remains unreleased. An early effort for Clancy Eccles, "God Made The Sea And Sun", was not promoted properly, though "Everyday Wondering", for Rupie Edwards, impacted in Britain; "Golden Snake" for Stamma Houghton and a cover of Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got A Hold On Me" for Glen Brown were also false starts. The breakthrough finally came in 1975 when Clarke linked with Bunny Lee, who had him voice the Rastafari landmark "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (written by Earl Zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the "flying cymbal" craze. Clarke's resultant debut album, Enter Into His Gates With Praise, mixed hard-hitting Rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the Paragons, Slim Smith, and Delroy Wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage American R&B.

HEY COLOSSUS Happy Birthday LP
Riot Season present a first time vinyl reissue of Hey Colossus's classic album Happy Birthday, originally released in 2008. Happy Birthday was Hey Colossus's fourth album, and it was originally released by Riot Season back in 2008 on CD only. The album marked the beginning of chapter two for the band, it was the first for Riot Season, the first where the wings were spread and the band took flight. Total noise rock, 100% out-there sounds. The band was a five piece at the time and had just completed a tour of Spain that was riddled with ups-and-downs but mainly full of future talk. Having done three albums on their own label, the main topic was what to do next. "You gotta keep moving" is the band's mantra, and it still is to this day. Check the three recent records on Rocket Recordings -- In Black and Gold (LAUNCH 077CD/LP, 2015), Radio Static High (LAUNCH 083CD/LP, 2015), and The Guillotine (LAUNCH 115CD/LP, 2017) -- and compare them to the first records. It was time to move away from conventional song writing and screw with the heads. Happy Birthday was recorded in Dropout, South London. The only label they sent it to was Riot Season, as Mainliner, Shit And Shine, and Circle were doing stuff with them at that time. It was the beginning of the band's noise rock trilogy all on Riot Season -- Happy Birthday (REPOSE 018CD, 2008), Eurogrumble Vol. 1 (2010), and RRR (2011). Now, nine years later, it's finally time for the vinyl version. No tweaks. No new mastering bullshit. Nothing different. Same songs, on a slab of classic black vinyl. Comes in a full color outer sleeve with a black inner sleeve; Comes with download code; Edition of 400.

SKY MUSIC Sky Music: A Tribute To Terje Rypdal CD
Guitarist and composer Terje Rypdal (1947) is probably as close as one gets to a living legend in Norwegian music. He has received a number of awards, including three Norwegian Grammies (Spellemannpris), the last being the honorary award in 2005. Sky Music is a heartfelt celebration of an inspirational artist and truly unique guitarist who hasn't fully received the due credit and recognition he deserves for over 50 years of music making. Initiated by the experimental US guitarist and lifelong Rypdal fan Henry Kaiser, Rune Grammofon put together an all-star band including keyboardist and long-time Rypdal side-kick Ståle Storløkken (Elephant9, Supersilent), bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (Scorch Trio, The Thing), drummer Gard Nilssen (Bushman's Revenge), guitarists Even H. Hermansen (Bushman´s Revenge) and Hedvig Mollestad, Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim (Scorch Trio), and Swedish guitarist Reine Fiske (Dungen). Kaiser also played and produced while Hans Magnus Ryan (Motorpsycho) added bits and pieces and Jim O'Rourke beamed in his exquisite contributions to "Sunrise" from Tokyo. Bill Frisell, Nels Cline, and David Torn delivered their solo interpretations, Cline with the aid of cellist Erik Friedlander.

KEDAMA Live At Sunrise Studios LP
Sommor Records present a reissue of Kedama's Live At Sunrise Studios, originally released in 1976. Swiss heavy-prog/kraut monster, originally released as a private, hand-made edition of 200 copies. Long instrumental/experimental tracks fueled by mellotron, Hammond, MiniMoog, ripping distorted guitar, and heavy drums. Kedama came from St. Gallen in the north-eastern corner of Switzerland, near the Bodensee -- only a few kilometers from Germany and Austria. Their name was inspired by Ketama, Morocco, famous for its cannabis fields. They were amongst the first bands -- possibly the first -- to record at Etienne Conod's legendary Sunrise Studios, using the "kunstkopf" artificial head system. Unfortunately, the lack of experience with this new system resulted in a slightly thin sound on the album. This reissue vastly improves the depth of the recording. Live At Sunrise Studios comprises four long instrumental tracks, two on each side of the LP. This is essential stuff, from the weird psych-funk of "Hwrlnzg" to the sitar-drenched "Improvisations". RIYL: King Crimson, Egg, Fusioon, Supersister, Jonesy, Gentle Giant, Tetragon, Siloah. Newly remastered sound; Includes insert with rare photos and liner notes by Alan Freeman (The Crack In The Cosmic Egg (1971)); Repro of a rare promotional booklet; Includes download card which features seven amazing bonus tracks taken from unreleased studio sessions (1973-77) and the compilation Perspectives (1975); Edition of 550 (numbered).

EL GOODO By Order Of The Moose CD
Welsh psych-pop band El Goodo return with their long awaited third album By Order Of The Moose, on Cian Ciaran's (Super Furry Animals) Strangetown Records. Recorded over the course of eight years in an old derelict cinema in their home village of Resolven, the album is a continuation of where the band left off in 2009 with their previous effort Coyote (2010). Wielding the wide open spaces of spaghetti westerns with the close melodic harmonies of girl groups and the good humor of Nuggets inspired garage rock n' roll, El Goodo takes you on a trip through their fascination with '60s music. Comprised of brothers Elliott (drums, percussion) and Jason Jones (guitar, vocals), Pixy Jones (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Lewie Sewers (guitar), Matthew Young (keyboards), and Andrew Cann (bass), El Goodo (named after a Big Star song) are a band enthralled by the past. They recorded the album on a 16-track with a small collection of faulty equipment, creating a collection of melodic pop songs, embellished with strings, brass, sitars, harmonicas, xylophones, and vocal harmonies (and then seemingly covered it all with dust), that you'd expect to find on some forgotten '60s record that someone has stumbled upon in their attic. Jason, who made the intricate cover illustration, seems to have interpreted the title to be more of a circus, depicting a wild west ringmaster, wild animals, and acrobats. From the first recording in November 2008 with the track "When", the album took eight years to complete. Initially thinking it would only take them a few months, they set out to record at The Music Box in Cardiff. Two years later they decamped back to their village, to the Resolven Miners' Welfare Hall. The first single "It Makes Me Wonder" is their interpretation of a '60s girl group song. The similarly titled opening track "Sit & Wonder" was an attempt to do something like Zager & Evans's "In The Year 2525", but it didn't turn out like that. The lyrics were based on war films like Come And See (1985), Ivan's Childhood (1962), and Red Dawn (1984). "So It Goes" was meant to be like a Marty Robbins cowboy song but ended up being more like a Nuggets track. "Susan And Bill" is a touching tribute to his parents.

"Strobe Light" returns to the more familiar 128bpm tempo that the pair have previously worked with. DJ MANNY Greenlight LP
Greenlight by DJ Manny is the fifth release from Teklife. This ten-track LP is a masterclass in footwork production by one of Teklife's leading figures. Born and raised in Harvey on the south-side of Chicago, DJ Manny has been footworking since the age of ten. The footwork sound has developed in unison with the dance style that accompanies it, and Manny embodies this synergy. DJ Manny is without doubt one of the best dancers on the scene, harnessing control, grace, and power in every movement. So when he steps into the studio, he knows instinctively how to create tracks that make you want to move your feet. Instead of relying on chopped-up samples, DJ Manny is more inclined to pick up the microphone himself, and this gives Greenlight an original and individual personality. On the opening track titled "Way You Move", his flow is soulful and almost verging on melodic. His laid back drawl sounds equally great on club bangers like "Life In This Bitch" and "If U Want It". As a young man, DJ Manny was the protégé of the late great DJ Rashad, and Rashad's influence reverberates through classic-sounding footwork tracks like "Boop Me Down" and "I'll Hurt Ya Baby". Elsewhere on Greenlight, DJ Manny explores different moods to great effect. "Ghost Out" is atmospheric and menacing, with a sparse, minimal rhythm and fearsome low-ends pulsing through siren synths. "Life In This Bitch" is a defiant statement of self-affirmation, and "Zancrash" featuring DJ Taye is uplifting and dreamy, with complex rhythmic patterns evocative of vintage jungle records. DJ Taye makes a significant contribution to this record, collaborating with DJ Manny on five productions, including the title track. A fellow Teklife squad member, Taye is a highly accomplished producer in his own right. Greenlight also features guest appearances from DJ Chap, DJ Lucky, and Sucia.

PLOY Footprints In A Solid Rock (Remixes) 12"
Timedance drops a second instalment of remixes, featuring two interpretations of the Ploy track "Footprints In Solid Rock", taken from 2016's Iron Lungs EP (TIMEDANCE 005EP). Beatrice Dillon contributes first with a sublime, dubbed-out trip. She strips back the percussion of the original and adds a single dreamlike chord -- it's a real zoner. Peder Mannerfelt supplies the flip. The remix takes on a stomping yet minimal form, before dissolving into one of the most wigged-out uber-rave breakdowns, designed for the late night sessions.

BERBERIAN, CATHY Pop Art LP
Cathy Berberian turned toward this repertoire critically, but with love. And even if she maintained a certain dose of ironic distance, she never stooped to parody. It would be a mistake to think she had any similarity to Paolo Poli in La Nemica. She had a repertoire to explore according to the instructions of Proust, and she explored it with the same devotion that she had applied to the music of Berio or Bussotti. In this recital she explores the most varied vocal territories: from traditional songs to Berio and to . . . The Beatles. In addition to compositions by Kurt Weill, William Walton, and herself. In this labyrinthine voice is a release for all vocals lovers.

CRYSTAL MYSLAJEK Circadia LP
2017 repress. "Captured in the depth of a Minnesota winter in a room equipped with two grand pianos, Crystal Myslajek produced the six track opus that is Circadia. Circadia is a contemplative, intuitive and luminous album of slowly unfurling arrangements for piano, voice, bass, drums and modular synthesizer. Myslajek (formerly of ethereal art-rock trio Brute Heart) is a Minneapolis-based performer and composer. Her compositions blend haunting vocals with minimalist classical piano, punctuated by bowed and plucked double bass, and sparse percussion. The sweeps and tones of a modular synthesizer articulates the colors already present in this modern achievement of musical production. Featuring Liz Draper (double bass), Chris Hepola (percussion and piano), and John Marks (modular synthesizer)."

MR. WRONG Babes In Boyland LP
"Guitarist Moff and Drummer Ursula started Mr. Wrong in a spider filled basement in 2015, inspired by femme punk & post-punk bands from the 70's and 80's, and the desire to learn their instruments. Many mix tapes and late-night-listening's later, many of which can be attributed to the discovery of blogs like Gunilla and T.V. Dinner, Mr. Wrong found their raw, confrontational sound. They met their bassist-to-be, Leona, at their first show (a rowdy house-show at their place of origin, Spider Vein) January 2016. Mr. Wrong continued as a 2-piece for about 9 months until realizing that Leona's bass stylings were the missing ingredient in their witches brew. At this point, Moff and Ursula had reached a new level of proficiency due to their dedicated practice schedule and tendency to never-say-never to a show. They recorded their Demo, Distraction, on local friends' cassette label, Cosmonaut Music, which captured the raw energy of their early songs (a blur of fierce 2-minute rants about jobs, witches, shitty dues, and gentrification) in the spring of 2016. The addition of bass that fall opened a door to the post-punk portion of Mr. Wrong's early inspiration, resulting in a wave of new song-writing which relied more heavily on complex rhythms. Babes In Boyland was recorded winter of 2017 at Red Lantern Studios. At the time, they didn't know what those recordings would turn into, they just knew they had to happen. Synchronicity struck at the recording space, leading to the release of their full-length record on Water Wing. Limited to 300 copies."
