LOS CAMAROES Resurrection Los Vol. 1 LP
A reissue of the electrifying final album from Cameroon's legendary Los Camaroes, available on LP for the first time since 1979. Recorded live to two-track at the Mango Bar in Yaoundé, Resurrection Los Vol. 1 was the last collaboration between bandleader Jean Gabari and groundbreaking guitarist Messi Martin. Los Camaroes emerged at the end of the 1960s from the town of Maroua, Cameroon. In the span of only a few years they changed Cameroon's music scene. The band had been led from the beginning by Jean Gabari. But it was Gabari's alchemical collaborations with guitarist Messi Martin that drove the band. Martin, deemed the "King of Bikutsi", had been lured away from the band before by the promise of success and when Los Camaroes were at the peak of their power in 1975, he left them once again. Gabari tried to keep the band going, but his battles with ill health eventually forced him to return to his hometown. By 1978, Los Camaroes were a rapidly fading memory. From out of nowhere, a businessman named Atangana Joseph appeared in northern Cameroon. He tracked down the original members of Los Camaroes and got them back together. Producer Nicolas Mongué and engineer Emmanuel Guyssot were called in from Douala to record what was being billed as a comeback album. Los Camaroes decided to record an album live to two-track in the legendary Mango Bar in the capital city of Yaoundé. The six tracks on the album were performed by a mixture of new recruits and veterans from the original Camaroes lineup including Mpouli "Dodo" Emmanuel and Boloko Michel on guitars, Eyango Claude on organ, the percussion duo of Ndi Bellui and Enama Leon, and vocal contributions from Sala Bekono Joseph and Ngoebang Jean Marie. The album, Resurrection Los Vol. 1, was completed in only a few days. The music that emerged during the Mango Bar sessions was the culmination of a fifteen year musical bond between Gabari and Martin, and what was supposed to be a comeback album ended up being a last testament --- Gabari would die only a few years later and Martin, without his foil, would never find the same level of musical success. 180 gram vinyl; Housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring liner notes with pictures, a story of the band as told by original keyboardist Mbambo "Johnny Cosmos" Simon, and new interviews; Includes a poster.

ROHRER, SAMUEL Range Of Regularity Remixes II 12"
The second EP of Samuel Rohrer's Range Of Regularity album (AMEL 712CD/LP, 2017) presents two more striking reinterpretations. The production specialists on hand for this project include Burnt Friedman and Ricardo Villalobos. Burnt Friedman's dramatic interpretation of "Microcosmoism" pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with Rohrer's continually transforming sound objects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative. This is complemented nicely by Villalobos's remix of "Microcosmoism". It carries the energy level of the first EP (AMEL 716EP) over to a new disk, while heavily experimenting with feelings of emotional ambiguity.

AUBURN LULL Hypha CD
The reclusive midwesterners return from dormancy with nine stunning, elegantly sparse tracks that showcase the band at its most focused, melodic, and mysterious. While distinctly sounding like Auburn Lull, Hypha veers into uncharted territory, delivering surprises at every turn. The hallmark cavernous guitars and vast, slow-motion expanses, though still present, are reigned in, restrained, and paired with a newfound sense of minimalism and a broader palette of sounds, textures, and shapes. While the band have existed for more than 20 years, they've always remained a well-kept secret to the wider indie community. Hypha is a brilliant example of why the band's rich textures and precise compositions are adored by so many. "... discerning ears will find that Auburn Lull's rich tapestry is as dangerously hypnotic and transporting as it is soothing." --Tiny Mix Tapes

Raoul K is known for blending the sounds of real West African instruments and modern electronic club sounds. This time, he takes a new approach. The original mix is produced without the use of any electronic instrument. Just pure African sounds, chopped and melted together into one groovy slice of contemporary club music. This is the first release in a series celebrating the tenth year of Baobab Music. Irfan adds a good measure of energy, setting up some analog synths with Raoul's beats. Kaito delivers a very dreamy remix which loses its kick drum, but not its groove.

AMADOU & MARIAM La Confusion CD
La Confusion is the eighth full-length album from Malian musical duo and Grammy-award nominees Amadou & Mariam. The album includes the hit single "Bofou Safou", which Stereogum calls "the funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk." The term "bofou safou" is a Bambara (Malian national language) nickname given to nonchalant young men who would rather dance than work. Over the span of three decades, Amadou (guitar and vocals) and Mariam (vocals) have developed an international following, recorded eight full-length albums, and toured around the world. Their album Welcome to Mali (BEC 5156468, 2008) was nominated for "Best Contemporary World Music Album" at the 52nd Grammy Awards. On the ensuing tour they supported U2 on their U2 360 Tour, performed at the 2010 World Cup for FIFA's Kick-Off Celebration, and performed alongside a host of major acts. Don't expect a still frame of African music; Stillness has never been part of their repertoire. The road stretches far behind them as Amadou & Mariam march on, bound by an unbreakable chain in their tireless search for new horizons. Creativity and generosity have never ceased to shine through their eight full-length albums. At their core lies a skillful fusion of heritage and cutting-edge music.

SUNNY & THE SUNLINERS Mr. Brown Eyed Soul CD
"When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than soul vocalist and Mexican-American songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. He became a star right out of high school in the late '50s and hasn't looked back in the six decades since. Among countless other honors and notable achievements, Sunny was the first Latino artist to appear on Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand' (in 1963). Songs like 'Put Me In Jail,' 'Talk To Me,' 'Should I Take You Home,' 'My Dream' and 'Smile Now, Cry Later' still bring crowds to their feet throughout the Southwest and California and around the world at 'oldies' and 'lowrider soul' events. And after releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal. This new compilation on Brooklyn's acclaimed Big Crown label is a lovingly curated selection of songs from the years 1966 to 1972. All compositions were originally released on Sunny's Key-Loc label, formed after his national star had been established, so he could have control of his own musical destiny. With Sunny hits -- a mix of originals and some great covers thrown in Mr. Brown Eyed Soul is an excellent celebration of Sunny's amazing body of work, and a perfect introduction for newcomers. Produced in full collaboration and cooperation with Ozuna himself, the packaging includes liner notes by Texas Music scholar and archivist Ramon Hernandez, and features dozens of rare photos provided by Sunny himself."

EL MICHELS AFFAIR Shadowboxin/Iron Maiden 7"
"Following up on the smashing success of El Michels Affair's Return To The 37th Chamber, EMA drops one more 45 for the collectors. The A side is the crushing cover of the Wu classic 'Shadowboxin' off GZA's cinematic masterpiece Liquid Swords. El Michels Affair takes the tune and makes it their own with dancing guitar licks, floating organ notes, and their signature heavy drums. The B side is a treat for the fans, a non-album cut, they cover Ghostface's 'Iron Maiden', the tune that opened up and set the tone for his debut classic Ironman. El Michels smashes this one with a frantic off beat intro that drops into a heavy duty cover of the tune. The inimitable studio prowess of Michels is highlighted all over this track in the nuances and arrangements. Play it loud, and also smoke something and play it in your headphones. Another Big Crown sureshot."

JABU Sleep Heavy CD
Blackest Ever Black presents Sleep Heavy, the debut album of broken-hearted, downtempo R&B/street-soul and supremely atmospheric, introspective electronics from Jabu: a trio comprised of vocalist/lyricists Alex Rendall and Jasmine Butt, and producer Amos Childs. The group was born out of Bristol's Young Echo collective: an ecosystem unto itself which has birthed and nurtured a number of other notable soundsystem-rooted projects and artists to date, including Kahn & Neek, Sam Kidel, Ishan Sound, Ossia, Asda, Chester Giles, and Killing Sound (Childs with Kidel and Vessel). Jabu's previous 7" singles, though arresting, barely hinted at the level of accomplishment and emotional heft that Sleep Heavy delivers. It's a future Bristol classic with a universal resonance, with songs that are highly personal but deeply relatable, and a tripped-out, time-dissolving sound design that both haunts and consoles. It is, first and foremost, a meditation on grief, loss, making sense of separation, and death; but it also looks forward to what might come after the aftermath: healing, acceptance, the chance to begin again. Childs is one of the most gifted producers of his generation and his work here, grounded in hip-hop but floating free, is a thing of sustained wonder: crepuscular, melancholic, subtly psychedelic, and heavily dubwise, but always concise and purposeful. Stitched together from deep-dug and beautifully repurposed samples, it draws on influences from US R&B to Japanese art-pop minimalism -- Mariah to Mariah Carey, if you will -- and a rich seam of underground UK soul, boogie, DIY/post-punk, library music, and lovers rock. There is also of course a distant connection to the Bristol blues of Smith & Mighty and the sultry urban gothic of Protection-era Massive Attack (1994), but Jabu's orchestration of womb-like ambiences, cold synth tones, and brittle beats feel entirely sui generis. They provide the perfect setting for Rendall's wounded, imploring and carefully weighted vocals, which are no less extraordinary: nodding to giants like Teddy Pendergrass and The Temptations in terms of phrasing and front-and-center vulnerability, with something of The Associates' Billy MacKenzie in there too; defeated but defiant. Meanwhile, Jas's heavenly interventions, sometimes leading but more often parsed and layered into tremulous, gossamer abstraction, draw a line between the Catholic choral harmonies of her childhood and the ethereal, oceanic sweep of Cocteau Twins. By its end, Sleep Heavy's world-weariness is intact and scarcely diminished, but some light has been admitted, and is visible from the sea-floor.

AMATEUR CHILDBIRTH Your Afterlife Is Cancelled LP
This is Amateur Childbirth's "Christian Rock" album. The previous LP from Ivan Matthew Hick's solo project, 2013's Pripyat, concerned itself with the blighted belief systems of UFO worshippers. Your Afterlife Is Cancelled expands this compelling solo project's field of enquiry to look at a wider array of "religious anomalies": cults, for want of a better word. Each song is about a different such anomaly. To call Hicks's vision apocalyptic would be to underplay its cruelty. The Bible's rampant sadism pales in comparison. This is a world where faith -- in a god or gods, in astrology, morality, or any meaning whatsoever -- is merely a prelude to punishment. His lyrics are vivid glossaries of pain, abjection and indignity; the songs' protagonists swim in blood, piss, shit, and ejaculate. Eschatology and scatology are indivisible here. Drugs are rampantly abused, albeit to little benefit. There are scalpel-flashes of humor in David's wordplay, rhyming and dour Brisbane diction -- but this offers scant consolation for the songs' embattled subjects, who wait, in vein, for salvation, while crows peck out their eyes, blood pours from their ears, and psoriasis ravages their skin. These words, for all their pessimism and body-horror, are cradled in minimalist, folk-rock arrangements that are quite dazzling in their beauty and grievously earned simplicity: Hicks's monochord strum embellished with subtle violin, synthesizer, and percussion shading. Amateur Childbirth's caustic end-times worldview inevitably prompts comparisons with Current 93, but also a wider (non-)tradition of caustic and disturbed loner psych that includes Simon Finn, Patrik Fitzgerald, Robyn Hitchcock, Peter Jefferies, and Roy Harper. Your Afterlife Is Cancelled is a depressive tour de force from one of the most crushingly eloquent voices in the Australian underground.

F INGERS Awkwardly Blissing Out LP
Recorded in Melbourne and Berlin between 2015-17 by Samuel Karmel, Carla dal Forno and Tarquin Manek, Awkwardly Blissing Out's title is instructive... the spiky eldritch song-spells of F ingers' previous album Hide Before Dinner (BLACKEST 044LP, 2015) have become more dubwise, immersive, and potently psychedelic; Euphoric even, but paranoid and laden with self-doubt. Projecting onto strangers, watching not participating, turning ever inwards. The cosmos explored from behind closed doors, under the bedclothes, alone. Whereas Hide Before Dinner evoked the thrill, and casual cruelty, of unsupervised childhood summers -- a suburban gothic of grazed knees, hide-and-seek, nettle-stings -- Awkwardly Blissing Out is an album of more adult anxieties and metamorphoses. The ghouls in your neighbor's garden are still there, but have come to represent something else, something more mundane and empirically real, but no less terrifying. Struggles with time, distance, isolation, communication, and commitment; your memories have a heaviness now. You can hear aspects of ferric post-punk and hauntological/DIY electronics in Awkwardly Blissing Out's musical make-up... Flying Lizards' Secret Dub Life (1995) or Brigitte Fontaine's Comme À La Radio (1969)... not to mention two generations of Oz/NZ underground experimentation, introspection, and dereliction. Now, more than ever, F ingers' highly evolved, but naturalistic sound-world is difficult to precisely place or unpick: a mildew-y drug-dazed dub-scape, teeming but minimalism, framed by lonesome guitar strums, Manek's supple percussive reverberating basslines, and Karmel's painterly synth washes, over which dal Forno exploits her voice for its pure tonal character -- whether diffracting light across the loping, uncanny techno rhythms of "All Rolled Up" and the waterlogged psych-folk of "Off Silently", or sliced and looped into disorienting patterns of abstract glossolalia on "Time Passes" and the time-dilating nine-minute title track. Awkwardly Blissing Out is a landmark recording from one of the Southern hemisphere's most extraordinary, visionary freak units; a deep and sensuous trip that nonetheless prompts some uncomfortable -- or at any rate, bittersweet -- reflection on what we are, what we were, and what we might have been.

COCKTAIL PARTY EFFECT Battered EP 12"
Eric Baldwin (Cocktail Party Effect) shows off his colors with four diverse, rhythmic, and experimental cuts. "Battered" kicks things off with a glitching set of electronics before dropping into a fidgety rhythmical explosion. "OOYFM" takes things into slightly more typical UK bass music territory, rolling out techno ingredients, a grime-y UK bassline with broken-beat rhythmical dynamics. "Intens" takes a stance that sits somewhere between dancehall and techno, while descending electronic motifs cascade in sympathy. "I Kno3" pulls back on the instant gratification factors but hits out instead with a moody, bass-driven and percussively expressive exit track.

MCPHEE, JOE Sound On Sound: Solo 1968-1973 2CD
2010 release. Sound On Sound is a two CD set of previously unreleased solo recordings by Poughkeepsie, New York multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, dating from 1968 to 1973. The extraordinary tracks document the very early years of McPhee's tenor playing (he was initially a trumpet player, though he was an absolute natural saxophonist) and his omnivorous interest in sound-making devices of all types (from drone organ to Nagoya harp, by way of soprano sax and hand percussion). They present a little-known aspect of his early work, his interest in multi-track recording, here executed on a device known as a Sound On Sound tape machine. When he performed live in concert with the device, he called it his "Survival Unit". McPhee aficionados will particularly enjoy the new-old soul/free jazz classic "Cosmic Love". Featuring McPhee solo on tenor saxophone, toy piano, toy percussion, recorder, soprano saxophone, Space Organ, flute, feedback, kalimba, echoplex, and percussion. Recorded 1968-69 and 1970-73.

MCPHEE QUINTET/ERNIE BOSTIC QUARTET, JOE Live At Vassar 1970 2CD
2010 release. Poughkeepsie, New York multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee organized a great double-bill at Vassar College in 1970, featuring himself and his local underground jazz peers. One disc in the two CD set of previously unreleased music consists of a complete set of music by McPhee's quintet -- wild and deeply soulful free jazz quite close in spirit to McPhee's legendary 1971 debut, Nation Time (CVSD 011CD), with clear connections to Pharoah Sanders. On the other disc, a simmering Hammond B-3 set introduces the Ernie Bostic Quartet and serves as an on-the-ground, in-the-crib soul-jazz foil to McPhee's political and astral explorations. Recorded April 30, 1970. MCPHEE, JOE Glasses CD
2012 release. A reissue of Joe McPhee's Glasses, originally released on Hat Hut Records in 1979. Glasses was recorded in October, 1977, during a highly significant period in McPhee's work, as he was pioneering the transatlantic, collaborative spirit that has helped to define the last three decades of his career. Documented in Tavannes, Switzerland, the set contains sensational tenor work, including the title piece, which finds McPhee ringing out a rhythm on a half-full wine glass, from which he extrapolates a melody on the saxophone, as well as a stunning version of John Coltrane's "Naima". The final 15 minutes are spent in duet with the Swiss percussionist Reto Weber, who was so inspired by McPhee he asked to sit in and did so with his quite extensive battery of drums. This record come from a year-long run during which McPhee recorded and released four very different, extremely wonderful solo records, of which only Tenor has ever been reissued on CD. Along with the 1979 album Variations On A Blue Line / 'Round Midnight (CVSD 007CD), this reissue was produced in collaboration with the seminal Swiss label Hat Hut Records and their chief, Werner X. MCPHEE PO MUSIC, JOE The Loneliest Woman CD
2012 release. In 1981, Joe McPhee culled together one of his greatest bands to record Topology (1981), his classic outing for Hat Hut Records. Featuring an expanded version of Po Music, his ensemble with saxophonist André Jaume, guitarist Raymond Boni, and bassist François Mechali, the group included pianist Irene Schweizer, percussionist Pierre Favre, baritone saxophonist Daniel Bourquin, cellist Michael Overhage, and trombonist Radu Malfatti. One of the tracks left on the cutting room floor was a spectacular take on Ornette Coleman's composition "Lonely Woman", with McPhee on pocket cornet and haunting vocals by Tamia. Thirty one years later, Corbett Vs. Dempsey present The Loneliest Woman, the full, uncut, 13 glorious minutes of music, available on this CD single for the first time ever. Recorded in Boswil, Switzerland on March 25, 1981. Engineered by Peter Pfister; Session organized by Werner X. Uehlinger of Hat Hut Records; Remastered by Joe McPhee and Ted Orr at Sertso Studio, Woodstock, New York. Cover art by Margot Bergman.

VANDERMARK/MATS GUSTAFSSON, KEN Verses CD
2013 release. Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and Chicago saxophonist and clarinetist Ken Vandermark have worked together extensively since the mid-1990s, in groups of their own and as members of the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet. Oddly, they had never performed duo before March 2013, when they squared off at the Corbett Vs. Dempsey gallery. The result was a delirious journey through extended techniques, intimate improvisation, and full-throttle flame-throwing, with an emphasis on the more delicate, sensitive side. The CD presents the entire concert, all six pieces in the order they were performed. A pair of today's master improvisers, at the top of their game, in a free music summit built for two. Recorded at Corbett Vs. Dempsey, Chicago on March 24th, 2013, by David Zuchowski. Mixed by David Zuchowski; Cover image by John Sparagana; Photography by Jim Dempsey."Verses is a paean to instantaneity. Quite surprisingly, this is the first time that longtime confederates Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson have played as a duo. But what comes across from the first note is the utter certitude of their playing. There's never any question that each can make sense of whatever the other plays, and from this security comes the confidence to take some thrilling individual risks." --Bill Meyer, Downbeat (Nov. 2013)

SHORELIGHTS Summer Cottage Soundscapes CD
Shorelights' "Summer Cottage Music" is a project exquisitely emulating an environment to drift and engage in quiet relief, one that is highly-dynamic and seriously sublime. Soundscapes from the keen minds of Rod Modell, Walter Wasacz, and Chris McNamara with obscure field recordings conducted by the late Michael Mantra. Summer Cottage Soundscapes was recorded in the drizzle at Armstrong's Lakeport Resort Campground, Lakeport Michigan, in the spring of 2017. A quadraphonic recording; EQ curves optimized for low-volume playback; Mastered to Tandberg TD20A. Field recordings via Sound Devices 702, Core-Sound High End Binaural Microphones, and Marantz PMD-430 stereo cassette, and Crown SASS Microphone. The sound of sitting on the back-porch, watching Lake Huron during a spring drizzle; strange lights glistening in the trees; the omnipresent pulse of Mother Earth in the countryside. Quiet sonics/energies not experienced in today's busy metropolises. This and a pair of headphones is a ticket to a lakeside camp in a warm spring rain. Sensuous and evocative. A 60-minute sound sphere designed for escapism and exquisitely emulates an environment to drift and engage in quiet relief, one that is highly-dynamic and seriously sublime. VA Trax Test (Excerpts From The Modular Network 1981-1987) 2LP
Trax Test is the first ever survey of Italy's pioneering, visionary, and influential label and mail art collective Trax, which ran from 1981-1987 as a network for the creation of collaborative projects. The collective included a pre-NWW Colin Potter and some of the earliest work from Masami Akita, aka Merzbow, but also had deep connections with the art world; a few Trax members went on to become famous designers and artists -- Ettore Sottsass of hugely influential Memphis Group even guests on vocals on the last track of the compilation. The whole selection here is rare as heck and sorely in-demand by collectors, much of it now making its vinyl premiere some 30-odd years after the fact. With credit due to compilers Vittore Baroni of Trax and Ecstatic's avowed wave fiend, Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving) -- who was also behind the Mutazione (Italian Electronic & New Wave Underground 1980-1988) compilation (2013) -- Trax Test is a portal to the international scene which laid the grassroots for a proliferation of electronic music over the proceeding decades -- a pioneering part of the infrastructure for independent music distribution which could be said to pre-echo the myriad social networks and platforms today. As Frans De Waard astutely points out in the 16-page booklet, there were no "templates" for this thing back then, meaning artists did everything DIY: from cutting, pasting, and Xeroxing their artwork to experimenting with recording techniques and disseminating their work; all resulting in a wonderfully daring and freeform mosaic of ideas which valued the virtues of ostensibly "unfinished" or open-ended work. Traces of disco, cosmic krautrock, jazz, electro-pop, and industrial noise are all tessellated across the compilation's 25 tracks, with a number of artists and the same equipment -- cheap drum machines, synths, FX and tape -- cropping up in various, mutant formations. This set is right up there with the best compilations from Vinyl On Demand, Light Sounds Dark, or Minimal Wave. Features: Cancer, M.A.Phillips, Nausea, Amok, Mecanique Vegetale, Daniele Ciullini, E-Coli, The Cop Killers, Peter Mayer, Rod Summers, Robin Crozier, Capitalist Pig, Biagio D'egidio, Piermario Ciani, Vittore Baroni, Nocturnal Emissions, De Rezke, Ado Scaini, Enrico Piva, Giancarlo Martina, B Sides, Colin Potter, Naif Orchestra, Merzbow (Vacation Of Merzbow Lowest Music & Arts), Monty Cantsin, Die Form, Utopia Production, Spirocheta Pergoli, Nostalgia, Ptose, Ddaa, Zone Verte, and I Nipoti Del Faraone. ABRAMS AND NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY, JOSHUA Simultonality LP
2017 repress. Simultonality is the follow-up to Joshua Abrams's critically acclaimed 2015 album Magnetoception (MTE 063-64LP, 2015). Credited to Joshua Abrams and Natural Information Society (NIS), it is the first recording in the project's nine year, four album history made by a regularly gigging manifestation, rather than a special assembly of friends. Recorded in 2014 and 2015 in single takes by the full ensemble during and after tours of the US and Canada, Simultonality once more affirms the project's unique approach to joining traditional musics, American minimalism, and jazz with the Gnawa ceremonial instrument the guimbri. Stasis, continuity, and repetition, central qualities of Abrams language, defined Magnetoception, listed by many as one of the best records of 2015. These same qualities form the heart of Abrams's music on Simultonality. But where Abrams once said Magnetoception is about "winter and death", Simultonality, in Abrams's words, is an album of "pure motion". Without sounding frenetic it is the most explosive NIS music on record, and without sounding over-determined, it is Abrams's most structured and through-composed music yet. Much of it is also fast, a mass of densely patterned elements swiftly orbiting constantly reconfiguring centers that are variously harmonic and rhythmic, clearly stated or implied. The music is at no time any more disorderly than a colony of bees pollinating a vast garden. Its many moving parts function in mutualistic relationship toward fulfilling Abrams's long stated intention for the project: to help listener's achieve a meditative center and to consciously use music as a gateway to living. Abrams credits William Parker as an inspiration for this intention. The musicians on Simultonality date back to the nascency of NIS. Along with Hamid Drake, Mikel Avery and Frank Rosaly are Abrams first-call drummers for the project. On Simultonality, Avery is in the left channel, Rosaly the right. Astute heads may recognize the rhythm in "Sideways Fall" as Jaki Leibezeit's drum break in Can's "Vitamin C". At Abrams behest, the two drummers divided the beat into separate parts. According to Hamid Drake, the rhythm was popularized, if not originated, by John "Jabo" Starks and Clyde Stubblefield of the J.B.'s. Nearly ten years into its existence, Abrams and the NIS wear their influences with creativity and ease. Long standing NIS members, Ben Boye and Emmett Kelly, were previously together with Abrams, or not, in Bonnie Prince Billy's band, and Abrams and Boye have at different times played in Kelly's band The Cairo Gang. Harmonium player Lisa Alvarado contributes the large format pattern paintings used by NIS at concerts and for its album covers. Personnel: Joshua Abrams - guimbri, bass, small harp, bells; Lisa Alvarado - harmonium, Leslie, percussion; Michael Avery - drums and percussion; Ben Boye - chromatic electric autoharp, piano, Wurlitzer; Ari Brown - tenor saxophone (on "2128½"); Emmett Kelly - electric guitar; Frank Rosaly - drums and percussion, resonator bells. Pressed on premium quality audiophile vinyl by RTI, presented in replica audiophile dust sleeves and heavyweight Stoughton LaserDisc jackets screenprinted by Alan Sherry/Siwa.

Midland provides the 94th instalment of the world's leading dubstep, drum & bass, and electro mix series from London's renowned Fabric nightclub. Midland's rise from avid fan to headlining Room One at Fabric may seem unreal but is actually a testament to an unequivocal vision and simple hard work. Working in kitchens to buy DJ equipment, graveyard radio slots, and relentless gigs during university years gradually gave way to a break with Dillinja's Valve Sound System show in the early 2000s. FabricLive 94 captures a night out, from the moments of adjusting to new surroundings, then to clarity and euphoria, and closing with ambient moments at sunrise. Midland compiled and hosted a show of the respected Radio 1 Essential mix in 2016. To date, he has collaborated with Ramadanman, Pariah, and Bicep on a number of releases. Midland owns and runs two imprints, Graded and Regraded, and recently signing a Gerd Janson and Shan two-tracker to the ReGraded label (REGRD 004EP). UGK Ridin' Dirty 2LP
2017 repress; clear vinyl. "Ridin' Dirty is the third studio album by dirty south legends Bun B and Pimp C -- together known as UGK. It is easily considered one of the greatest southern hip hop albums ever made, but let's drop all the labels this is just pure good rap music, for any region. It's all right there, everything that people have come to expect from Houston rap: candy-painted cars, wood-grained steering wheels, flashy jewelry, late-night odes to lean and weed, passing references to DJ Screw tapes, those warm funk synthesizers that sound like radio oldies. All of Ridin' Dirty feels iconic now -- among other reasons, because so many of its lyrics have since been cribbed by everyone from Slim Thug to Jay Z. There's the laid-back badassery of 'Diamonds and Wood,' the zoned-out celebration of '3 in the Morning,' the ridiculous boasting of 'Fuck My Car.' Everything here is essential. Ridin' Dirty was produced entirely by Pimp C and features start to finish bangers such as 'One Day', 'Murder,' 'Hi Lif,' and of course the title track 'Ridin' Dirty.' Pimp C makes use of perfectly chosen soul, funk, and gospel samples to create a perfect soundscape for he and Bun B to trade verse over. Despite there being no singles or videos released from the album, the set went on to be a pivotal moment in southern hip hop as well as UGK's best-selling and most critically acclaimed release."

DEAD PREZ Lets Get Free 2LP
2017 repress. "dead prez may have been slightly ahead of their time during their golden years, but that is definitely meant as a compliment. Sermonizing Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and the benefits of a healthy and just lifestyle during the height of the Bad Boy / Roc-AFella era of nihilistic excess in the late '90s, they also signed to a major label (Loud / Columbia) despite leaning much more towards the burgeoning indie aesthetics of the day. But this was a good thing -- using major label muscle to wake up righteous hip-hop fans who might have fallen asleep at the wheel. The group itself -- consisting of MCs stic.man and M-1, who produced or co-produced most of the duo's music -- was formed in Tallahassee, Florida in the early 1990s (M-1 originally hailed from Brooklyn). By later that decade, the duo had started making significant waves, having their music heard on the soundtracks to Soul In The Hole and Slam, as well as appearing on albums by Big Pun and The Beatnuts. By 1998, they released their first official single, the serious, stark 'Police State,' on Loud, appropriately brought to the label by Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian. After building a solid rep over the next two years with fiery live performances, in 2000 they unleashed their debut album, Let's Get Free. The album was a welcome return to provocative and often radically political rhetoric that hearkened back to hip-hop forebears including The Coup, Public Enemy and KRS-One (as well as poetic descendants like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets). Let's Get Free was critically acclaimed and benefited from multiple singles, including the infectious, thick analog drive of 'Hip-Hop' (which became the de facto theme song for 'Chappelle's Show'); 'It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop,' with a remix co-produced by a young Kanye West; 'Mind Sex' (with Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets); and the poignant 'I'm An African.' But the singles weren't the only worthy songs, as just about every cut here has deeper meaning than most full albums by their early 2000s peers. Highlights: the thought-provoking, anti-drug album opener 'Wolves'; 'We Want Freedom' (co-produced by frequent collaborator Hedrush); 'They Schools' and 'Propaganda' (co-produced by Lord Jamar, one of five songs he assisted on). All in all, this is one of the more underrated and possibly Top 5 fully-realized political hip-hop albums of all time. If you don't agree with the previous sentence, give Let's Get Free another listen... you might be surprised at how well it has held up over the years."

ROCK & C.L. SMOOTH, PETE Mecca and the Soul Brother 2LP
2017 repress. "The critically acclaimed 1992 full-length debut from Pete Rock & CL Smooth. The album is considered as one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time. Boasting tracks such as the first single, 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)', a dedication to their deceased friend; 'Trouble T-Roy', which went on to become not only their signature hit, but also one of Hip Hop's all-time great songs. The album is propelled forward by Rock's quick, soulful interludes; usually bits of old R&B tunes layered with his signature trumpet and sax loops. Smooth's liquid freestyle delivery pieces together the perfect vocal match that, together, creates a sprawling, nearly 80-minute-long album on which not a single song or interlude is a throwaway or a superfluous piece. Mecca And The Soul Brother has stood the test of time. The release has been named one of the essential recordings of the 90s by Rolling Stone, appears on Ego Trips listing of the Top 25 Hip Hop albums released from 1980-1998, and appeared on The Source's 100 Greatest Rap Albums of all time."

CAVALIER SONG A Deep Well LP
Cavalier Song inscribe modern eulogies to celebrate the terrible beauty of rural dystopias. Their cinematic stares study earthy landscapes and post-industrial wastelands, constructing a range of sonic artworks that meditate on the human condition, stirring memory and desire within definitions of a terrific sublime. The results are a series of lush, yet darkly affective, symphonic abstractions weaving in and around melancholic myths and narratives. Cavalier Song deploy a post-minimalist sensibility, referencing a range of art forms including painting, sculpture, and literature. Musical and poetic influences include Philip Glass, Swans, Ted Hughes, John Coltrane, and King Crimson, each echoing a fascination for melodic repetition, unconventional rhythms and poetic design. Their second album A Deep Well depicts a series of shifting mise-en-scènes -- from Arcadian dysfunction to an omnipresence of troubling signs, unfathomable monoliths, and abandoned fracking sites. The album has an edgier, starker, more intense and urgent feel than their acclaimed debut Blezard (GODUNK 014LP, 2015); the noisier provocations of "Adam's Apple" and "Heathen" vigilantly co-existing with the gentler inventions of landscape, developed in the ambient wanderlusts of "St Christopher" and "Shields". Mysterious, enigmatic choreographies emerge in "Insect Fire Dance", where an oedipal protagonist is confronted with a litany of pagan objects, scattered on an ancient burial ground. "... a touch of The Fall in a brawl with Robert Fripp and the blazing sentinels of King Crimson." --Shindig!

Quite apart from being a breath of fresh air with its flowing and soulful piano elements, the sound design and lush melodious pads will have you absolutely hooked. After creating a very clean master of Attachment, Home Normal label head Ian Hawgood felt there was another layer to be told in the work, with its close recording techniques, dusty piano tones, and overall warmth. NINOS DU BRASIL Vida Eterna LP
Nico Vascellari and Nicolò Fortuni come out to play in the dark on their third and deadliest LP as Ninos Du Brasil, taking their fascinations with ritual musics -- from Brazilian Afro-Latin tribal rhythms to library music and freezing Scandinavian BM -- deep into the festering undergrowth of their shared, exotic aesthetic. Where the cover of their first album for Hospital Productions, Novos Mistérios (HOS 411CD, 2014), depicted a naked man covered by a leopard pelt, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd's oil painting of a screeching Chiroptera in flight on the Vida Eterna jacket makes a strong visual allegory for NDB's finer tuned spatial sensitivities inside, with their churning rhythms now embedded in fathoms of dread space and father shaded in layers of processed vocal chants, both punk, metal, and tribalistic. The big highlight is no doubt the closing cut, "Vagalumes Piralampos", where Arto Lindsay, the legendary founder of DNA, chimes in on a stygian, moonlit jag between the eyes of bossa nova, batacuda, and the sort of esoteric electronics also charted by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement or Cienfuegos. But it only really makes sense after you've expended your energies along with the band thru monstrous techno shakedowns such as "O Veto Chama Seu Nome", the soca-like rush of "Condenado Por Un Idioma Desconhecido", or found yourself lost, without coordinates, in the pitch black breakdown of "No Meio Da Noite" and have been hypnotized by the stalking rhythms and atmospheres of "Em Que O Rio Do Mar Se Toma". The creation of this album, inspired by vampirism, was born from a collaboration between Vascellari and Fortuni with producer Rocco Rampino, whose love of dense textures and low-end bombast masterfully and cleverly couples with the bands explosive percussive charge, resulting in eight tracks that mimic sharp blades scything through a nocturnal jungle. RIYL: Psychedelic Warriors Of Gaia, Female, Vatican Shadow. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Comes in a gatefold jacket.

Lucid Locations winds down paths that explore breakbeat, electro, IDM, and techno. For any listeners wanting to sink their teeth into something far-reaching and familiar at the same time, this is definitely worth checking out. "Barrel Roll" is a perfect entry point, not only because it captures the essence of Second Storey as a project in 2017 (as well as his growth from the excellent Al Tourettes releases), but it also emphasizes the perseverance and poise that Storey carries over from his personal life into the tracks that he creates. Keep on, carry on, and rave until the lights come on.

JASSS Weightless 2LP
Jasss makes her head and body-turning album debut with Weightless, an absorbingly stark and spiky set of industro-dub concerns, riddled with heavy inspiration from African rhythms, jazz and concrète electronics. After a trio of acclaimed 12"s for Berlin's Mannequin and Amir Alexander's Annunaki Cartel since 2016, iDEAL Recordings now give Jasss room to consolidate and expand her grizzled dancefloor structures to a full-length episode that brutally dovetails with Joachim Nordwall's unforgiving but compelling take on contemporary noise and industrial musics. Very much an antecedent of Spanish industrialists, such as Diseño Corbusier, Xeerox/Krishna Goineau, or Mecanica Popular/Randomize, Jasss firmly builds on that heritage with a uniquely pensive balance of percussive suss, synthetic bite, and reverberating spatial dynamics that makes her music heavy-as-sin and deliciously deft with it, patently forgoing industrial music's angry guy glare in favor of far more feminine and Latinate pressure systems. She does so with an aching, puckered patience in the opener, "Every Single Fish In The Pond", escalating from a lone cymbal motif and location recordings to a pulsating darkroom boldness by the end of an incendiary scene-setter, before really getting her fangs in with the clenched but driving EBM torque of "Oral Couture", recalling a spiked Toresch or CTI hovering at the darkroom's entrance. From here on in a dream sequence of events take place, morphing from febrile, hash-induced triplet pirouettes in "Danza" through the martial free jazz/industrial cut-up of "Cotton For Lunch", to a definitive apex of sprung, stepping cyber-goth in "Weightless", with a pause for Alberich-like reflection on "Theo Goes Away", but the voodoo rises once again with the druggy swagger of "Instantaneous Transmission Of Information", and her stoic, blunt-edged mauler, "To Eat With Dirty Hands". It's rare to hear industrial music done with such variation and individual distinction as "Weightless", making it shine in a field so often associated with greyscale and monotone signatures. RIYL: Christoph De Babalon, Klinik, Toresch, Mecanica Popular, CTI. Artwork by Pan Daijing. Master and cut by Matt Colton. Comes in a gatefold jacket; Edition of 600.

EMERY, MATT Empire LP
Matt Emery's music is described by The 405 as "ebbing from soft whispers to an ocean of sound that would calm even the roughest of seas." Their words are apt. Though learned and erudite, Empire, a record that echoes the grandeur and myriad complexities of Greek mythology, is experienced less in musicality but in mood. From the swooping strings of the album's title track to the fluttering piano of "Effervescent", to the intensity of "Orpheus", it is evident that Emery has a heavy heart. There is melancholia, jubilation, tension, beauty, dark ambience, all deftly navigated within its various movements. Emery's profile as a composer has benefited from several placements across cinema and television, accumulating an incredible 30 million views on YouTube for his GoPro online ads. His music was used for the trailer of Anton Chekhov's Seagull play (1895) at Regents Park Open Air Theatre in June and July of 2015. Other placements include trailers for the British Academy's Literature Week in 2015 and 1883 Magazine's "Life Less Ordinary" -- a behind the scenes photo shoot amongst many others. And despite Empire being his debut album, previous self-released singles have received radio play across many of the BBC's music stations, KEXP, and Amazing Radio.

OZKENT, MUSTAFA Genclik Ile Elele LP
2017 repress, black vinyl. "Originally released in Turkey 1973, Özkent's masterpiece (creation) of an all instrumental Turkish Psychedelic Funk album, filled with classic beats and breaks still inspires long time fans and first time listeners. The funky rhythms, hypnotic percussions, and heavy break beats makes this a holy grail amongst DJ's and music fans alike. Only a handful of copies from the original pressing are known to still exist making this reissue a welcome addition to any record collection. The concept is very complicated, futuristic and free from categorization. Traditional folk songs mixed with rock, jazz, blues, funk and psych. Özkent took traditional turkish folk songs and reconstructed them for the new 'hip' generation. It was recorded live in just one day with some of the best studio musicians in Turkey. The band was made up of 2 drummers, 2 guitarists, 2 percussionists, a bassist and a Hammond B3 organist. Özkent created his own unique guitar sound by adding extra frets and a clutch of effect pedals in order to create quarter notes and emulate turkish traditional scales. Mustafa Özkent has since made arrangements for hundreds of other artists in Turkey. But this unique album documents his most revered work. In the more than 40 years since the Mustafa Özkent Ve Orkestras? recorded Gençlik ?le Elele, it seems that the world is still just discovering this gem."

CLARKE, JOHNNY Dread a Dub LP
2017 repress; LP version. Johnny Clarke is one of the great vocalists that ruled the Jamaican dancehall scene from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. While Bob Marley was out conquering the world, Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs and Johnny Clarke were winning the hearts of the Jamaican people. Johnny Clarke's use of the "Flying Cymbal" sound took the island by storm and produced a run of hit singles few could match. Johnny Clarke (b. 1955, Jamaica, West Indies) cut his first record, God Made the Sea and Sun, after winning a local singing contest in the Bull Bay area of Jamaica. Although the single was not a hit, it led to two follow-up tracks for producer Rupie Edwards, "Everyday Wandering" and "Julie" that fared much better, both on the island and overseas in England and Canada. These tracks also brought the singer to the attention of producer Bunny Lee and a working relationship that would go on to produce a prolific catalog of music. Johnny Clarke's dread conscious/love song-style was to grace many hits around this time in 1974. Such tunes as "None Shall Escape the Judgement," "Move Out of Babylon," "Rock With Me Baby," "Enter the Gates With Praise" to name but a few. All new songs added to a host of cover tunes, recommended by Bunny Lee, many taken from the singer John Holt's catalog, that suited Clarke's vocal style. The rhythms were cut at various studios around the Island. Randy's Studio 17, Channel 1, Treasure Isle, Dynamic Sounds and Harry J's, by a group of musicians loosely called the Aggrovators, and some tunes incorporating the "Flying Cymbal" sound again introduced by Bunny Lee, working the hi-hat in fine style. The tracks were then taken to King Tubby's studio where Johnny Clarke's vocals would be voiced. Another phenomenon that was happening in the early 1970s, was the version cuts to vocal tracks. This is when the tunes were cut back to the bass and drums and vocals were dropped in and out in a dubbed style, and reverb and echo and various effects were added to these tracks. The main exponent to this style was King Tubby himself, and as was the fashion at the time, each vocal track would carry a version as its B-side. Producer Bunny Lee led this style working closely with King Tubby and all of his singles from then on would carry a dub cut on its flipside. As Johnny Clarke was one of Bunny's main singers at the time, we would hear a great selection of popular songs getting the dub treatment and in many cases, the single was purchased for its more exciting dub cut. Compiled here are some of the best of these dubs from that time.

KOLSCH 1989 2LP
Double LP version. Includes download code. For Danish native and much-revered producer/performer Rune Reilly Kölsch, Kompakt has proven the perfect home curating his music: with two critically acclaimed albums and a now classic run of solo installments on the Speicher 12" series, he took his techno craftsmanship to new levels, setting it on a melodic, emotive and even autobiographical course -- without losing any of its punch and quirkiness. With his new full-length 1989, Kölsch presents the final chapter of an elegant, anthemic album trilogy that started with an exploration of early childhood memories and influences on 1977 (KOMP 107CD/KOM 276LP, 2013) -- the year of his birth -- and continued on 1983 (KOMP 122CD/KOM 329LP, 2015), a vibrant and picturesque journey sound tracking the year he travelled through Europe aged six. "With 1989, we have arrived in my early teens", Kölsch explains, "a difficult time in my life, where I mostly just remember the greyness of it all." Coinciding with the already challenging need to squeeze past the bottleneck of puberty, it was a time of seething family crisis -- his parents were divorcing: "I would escape that grey world on my skateboard, listen to my Walkman as I explored the city around me. Music became my savior . . . I found a soundtrack to my grey life, and suddenly there was color." It's why you'll find several tracks on the album being named "grey" in different languages, and they all share this distinctly "Kölsch-esque" moment of epic melodies breaking through propulsive techno beats. 1989 marks also Kölsch's intensified deployment of real-life orchestral sounds and the continuation of his extremely fruitful collaboration with Gregor Schwellenbach; after contributing to predecessor album 1983, the Kompakt affiliate, composer, and multi-instrumentalist now conducts the Heritage Orchestra for tracks "Khairo", "Liath" (featuring a violin solo by Kate Robinson), and "Serji", the latter of which Schwellenbach co-wrote and co-produced. The 24-person Heritage Orchestra add the sweeping drama and organic, richly-layered textures that only real strings can produce. Seeing Kölsch's propensity for vocalist cameos on his albums, one shouldn't be surprised to find beautiful cut "In Bottles", which features vocals written and performed by Aurora Aksnes. 1989 delivers on all fronts, engulfing the listener from the outset with its sonic coupling of classical composition and contemporary production -- without sacrificing the impact on the dancefloor.

The new "Hardspace Mix" bolsters up the characteristic vocal and synths for even more frantic effect, but trades in the percussion for Faki's signature assault of claps and hats. These also dominate the stripped-back "Hardspace Tool", which carefully builds momentum only around the sirens and some seriously sizzling low-end rumble. WELLS, ORSON Pneumatics 2LP
Alvin Toffler was overwhelmed. When in the morning of October 4th, 1988 -- it was his 60th birthday -- he was staring into a bowl of cornflakes, he thought that in the surface structure of the yellowish shimmering milk which was making an emulsion with the maple syrup and slowly, but irreversibly, corroding the crunchy crystals on the flakes, he could see through a window into a timeless dimension. Toffler, who at that time had reached the peak of his fames as a future scientist, was sustainably disturbed from his peek into this extra temporary peephole. In none of his books -- Future Shock (1970) had just been released in another edition -- did he ever mention this occurrence. The "flake dimension" as Toffler called it in notes, were later shredded remains a secret of opaque, hard-to-grasp, radiant power. Maybe it's too simple to describe Pneumatics as a creation coming from this cornflake world? Are there any more precise terms or instruments to determine the multi-facetedness and beyond-timeliness of the Pneumatics soundscape? There are still unknown. Pneumatics is, after releases at Innervisions, Die Orakel, and his own label Sound Mirror, the debut album of Orson Wells (as long as you don't count in Jupiter, released on cassette in 2014). Perhaps Wells, known in Frankfurt under his real name Lennard Poschmann and as an employee at the record store Tactile, is only a messenger. Or a psychic. The sound manifesto that he apparently transmits from Toffler's secret dimension tells of a city of upside-down pyramids ("Tianon"), of passes into the land of the five elements ("Multipass"), and dead straight four-to-the-floor lines which appear bended within the spherical dimension ("Geodesic"). These beats are right on the heels of the ones of Interstellar Fugitives (1998); the strings sound like that at any moment a vocal sample edited by Moodyman could warp over through the cornflake wormhole. Pneumatics is the science of all technological applications powered by condensed and often by quite heated air. It is a matter of mechanics, compression, jackhammer, ramblings, high-pressure levels, valves for blowing of steam. Orson Wells's album gets to the point of the post-retro futuristic state and of the dancefloors of the house and techno clubs of this planet. It is like a peek into another dimension, right on the golden cut of space-time geometry.

FOXX AND THE MATHS, JOHN The Machine LP
LP version. Directed by York Theatre Royal's associate director Juliet Forster, Neil Duffield's adaptation of E.M. Forster's chilling short story The Machine Stops (1909) explores humanity's increasingly intricate and complex relationship with technology. The acclaimed production, which opened in 2016 and toured again in 2017, features a specially composed soundtrack by John Foxx And The Maths -- John Foxx and Benge. This forms much of the music on The Machine, although there are new mixes and some extended material as the pair developed stage music into a fully-fledged album. Described as "eerie", "evocative", and "a triumphant score of chest-crushing anxiety" by The Independent and The Guardian in their stage reviews, the music (created entirely on analog synthesizers and drum machines) is some of the finest the pair have created yet. The Machine's rich atmospheres move from the sinister breathing effects that start on "The Ghost In The Machine" through moments of beauty on "The Other Mother" and ARP Odyssey-soloing "Transworld Travelogue" into an ancient, mythic song on "Memory Oxide" where Foxx further investigates a style that he first explored on his own Cathedral Oceans (1997). Elizabeth Bernholz (Gazelle Twin) provides the high, lilting vocals on "Genetic Hymnal" and the album ends -- as does the stage production -- with the elegiac theme of "Orphan Waltz".

ASH RA TEMPEL EXPERIENCE Live In Melbourne LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve; Includes printed inner sleeve. 2015 live recording from the Supersense Festival in Melbourne, previously unreleased, featuring a supergroup of Manuel Göttsching, Ariel Pink, Oren Ambarchi, and Shags Chamberlain playing material from classic Ash Ra Tempel releases, 1972's Schwingungen (MGART 112CD) and 1973's Seven Up (MGART 113CD). Taken from Göttsching on the release: "Out of the blue -- I was invited to perform in Melbourne, Australia. It happened thanks to my dear old friend Mick Glossop, who made the suggestion to Sophia Brous, at the time the curator of a music-festival called 'Supersense' at the Melbourne Arts Centre in summer 2015. In addition to the solo performance I'd planned, Sophia proposed an additional collaboration or session performances with some of the other participating musicians. I had never been very happy in performing 'public sessions'. I've always tried to first look for a conceptual approach, and my wife, Ilona J. Ziok, came up with the idea of performing some Ash Ra Tempel classics. That's when the idea for an 'Experience' was born. I decided that pieces from the second and third Ash Ra Tempel albums Schwingungen and Seven Up would be most appropriate for a group performance with Ariel Pink, Shags Chamberlain, and Oren Ambarchi. We conversed by email, and much to my surprise, they all claimed to be very familiar with this music. . . . We finally met in Melbourne for a relaxed afternoon rehearsal, just two days before the actual concert performance took place. After a technical set-up we went straight into 'Look At Your Sun' and it was as if we had performed it only yesterday. It continued like that with the other tracks. For the first part of Schwingungen I decided for a little variation, so that all four of us were standing around the vibraphone at the beginning, playing it with four/eight hands -- like an imaginary 'Music for Four Musicians' (a bit reminiscent of the early works of Steve Reich). . . . In return, it was only natural to ask Mick Glossop to make a mix of our concert recording, and quite happily he agreed. He has put together a wonderful and subtle mix, perfectly representing the atmosphere of the concert." Includes liner notes by Mick Glossop and Manuel Göttsching and photographs of the rehearsal and live performance.

O'DWYER, AINE Gallarais LP
David Toop, on hearing Áine O'Dwyer's Gallarais and the subsequent conversations between November 2016 and January 2017. "Sleep music, the underworld. Twenty-six letters were sent, not far to travel, from Proust, hypersensitive writer to his upstairs neighbour, Marie Williams -- 'I was rather troubled by noise . . . I was trying to sleep off an attack. But at 8am the tapping on the parquet was so distinct that the Veronal didn't work and I woke with the attack still raging.' Marie Williams played harp, though it was not the harp that dragged Proust from the fumes of a bedroom armed against asthma attacks, cork-lined to smother noise.. . . Proust spoke of an imperceptible breath, 'like the wind breathing into the stem of a reed', mingling with the subdued song of his dying grandmother's breathing, 'swift and light . . . gliding like a skater towards the delicious fluid', the human sighs released at the approach of death . . . 'Who's there?' cries out the old man, stark terror pulled awake at the faintest of noises from pitch black vicinity of an unseen doorway. . . . There is one voice or two, whispers of shaping breath thrown into far obscure and occult recesses of the space as if spirits on the wing whose feathers shriek and keen. They are swans with near-human heads, carrying the lightness of souls, moving between dry land of the living, subterranean rivers of the dead. Sleep music they make, its murmurs written by the method of 'passive writing', a transcribing of tongues unknown to all but the most open of listeners. . . . The space was a cave, a tunnel, a room without windows. A skull without eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, though as Beckett had noticed, the soul turns in this cage as in a lantern, silence 'beating against the walls and being beaten back by them'; the space was a chapel, upturned boat, perhaps the curragh that carried Maildun and his crew to the Isle of Weeping, the Isle of Speaking Birds, the Palace of Solitude. . . . 'Within a house described by Mary Butts, in Ashe of Rings (1998), the bronze note of a clock rings, 'like a body falling bound into deep water'. . . . The body descended into the tunnel, never to return as itself."

SIRIUSMO Enthusiast 2LP
2017 repress; Double LP version. As soon as Mosaik, Siriusmo's debut album, got released in 2010, studio-work for the sophomore album began. Unfortunately, the myth of the difficult second album became a reality and so the album changed its face again and again, got delayed various times, until finally, at the beginning of 2013, Siriusmo was happy with what he had accomplished. After beat works for Snoop Dogg and an album collaboration with Boys Noize, Siriusmo now finally presents Enthusiast, his long-anticipated second album. Enthusiast features 13 songs ranging from neo-disco house tunes, electro-pop, cutting edge hip-hop to UK bass-inspired beat constructs and various electronic listening experiments. Multifaceted and eclectic as always, Siriusmo knows how to satisfy high expectations without compromising his sound. To some, Mosaik felt less like an album and more like a compilation, with its drastic jumps from genre to genre and its wild-style, all-over-the-place attitude. Regardless of which opinion you share, Enthusiast combines the best of both worlds and makes for one of the most compelling offerings from Siriusmo in his more than a decade-long recording career. The album still shows no signs of a one-sided sound, but at the same time, it is a more homogeneous and mature piece of work. Enthusiast definitely bears the hallmarks of what we've come to expect from a great Siriusmo record.

SIRIUSMO Comic CD
Pow, Boom, Splash! You will instantly recognize the rich brush strokes of this musical painter. Monkeytown linchpin Moritz Friedrich, aka Siriusmo, is back with a bang and a pencil. Following up 2013's Enthusiast (MONKEY 033CD/LP), his third full-length recording Comic sounds like its title suggests: colorful, rampant, funny, and hilariously foolish. Siriusmo maintains his very own sound and spot within electronic music, drawing from numerous styles and mashing it all through his personal beat-grinder, constantly understating and exaggerating. He's the innovator that has no such intentions at all. Here's what the master himself has to say about his new work: "Comic feels like dilettante kids drawings roughly sketched with a big marker, like abstract layouts as well as finely carved romantic paintings. 14 songs ripped from the pages of a coloring book to be vividly colored by you!" But don't worry, those pages will fill themselves with life as soon as the mellow and trippy patterns of the opening track set in. There are big and broken beats in "Wrong Password", extremely easygoing rave tunes like "Dagoberta", lots of genuine oddities like "Wixn", and the piano work on "Geilomant" even makes you think of some classic hip-hop track. Comparisons are futile, except for one: From the melodic vintage electro of "Dagoberta" to the sonic assault and whirlwind drum programming of "Bleat", there's a strong link to older Squarepusher records. Just replace the former's jazz and jungle roots with Berlin's musical history, and you get an idea of what Siriusmo is made of. Siriusmo may be the laziest genius around, though he's been all but unproductive since Enthusiast: In 2015 he joined forces with Modeselektor and toured Europe under the banner of Siriusmodeselektor, playing festivals from Glastonbury to Sonar. The same year he produced the debut album of Romano, Köpenick's one-of-a-kind rap phenomenon and close friend of Moritz. He remixed Moderat, collaborated with synth pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, and contributed to Mr. Oizo's latest album (BEC 5156714, 2016), who's also appearing on Comic. So does Romano on standout track "La Bouche", delivering some tasty German phrases. Having been occupied recently with Roman's second album, his fans are very lucky that Moritz found the time to pin down a new Siriusmo album as well. He may not be a man of many words, but possesses a bold and singular musical vision. Also features Dana And Romano and Jan Driver.

GAJEK 17 LP
LP version. This is Gajek. This is 17. Come in, feel free. Don't worry if you see a flute in the sink. Matti Gajek's follow-up to his 2014 debut album Restless Shapes (MONKEY 053CD/LP) opens the floodgates to signals from a future best navigated by ear. Moving through polyphonic pulses, layers of grooves and sounds, zooming in-and-out of ever evolving patterns of concentration and decomposition, the ten tracks of Gajek's 17 are electrifyingly futuristic club music true to the almost five decades old motto of Berlin's Zodiak Free Arts Lab: Total freie Musik ("totally free music"). Paying tribute to electronic pioneers like Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Florian Fricke while staying clear of historical mystification, Gajek revisits the abstract clarity and improvisational audacity of 1970s electronics from a perspective firmly rooted in the digital now -- this is not '71. Today motoric rhythms emerge and elapse from post-digital aural 'scapes, intense and sublime, linking the thermodynamic to the ephemeral. Beyond the echoes of past utopias, 17 discovers present signs for possible tomorrows.

The in-demand duo Chaos In The CBD is back on Mule Musiq with another breath-taking EP. This time the New Zealand natives present different atmospheric spheres. "Comfort Zone" is a slow house burner enlarged with bird sounds, flute melodies, and super warm bass power. "Educate The Hear" marries dub atmospheres and four-to-the-floor grooves, without giving up the hotness that dub music has to offer. "Pressure" is a gentle house track that stays calm while spreading hard to resist dance emotions and brings in funk that shakes the booty. A heartfelt produced EP with three, kind heavy hitters.

Music From Memory return with four tracks drawn from the St. Louis musician Virgil "Vincent" Work Jr.'s cassette debut from 1987, Fast Forward. Following a compilation taken from one of Virgil's collaborative projects, Workdub (MFM 012EP, 2016), this album reflects a more stripped back and raw musical approach. Experimenting with rhythm programming, midi, layering, sequencing, digital effects, and sound synthesis, the Fast Forward sessions grew from a series of late night jams with Vincent's brother Scott. The songs that would form Fast Forward evolved out of improvisation, lending a unique often spatial and searching quality to the tracks.

RIHM, WOLFGANG Spharen CD/SACD
Wolfgang Rihm is doubtless one of the most successful composers of modern times and can meanwhile look back on an enormous oeuvre that can hardly be classified within a single stylistic direction. Until 2008, Andreas Schablas was a member of the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, after which he became deputy solo clarinetist of the Bavarian State Orchestra, where he has been solo clarinetist since 2010. Andreas Schablas has been appointed Professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg starting in October 2017. The oenm . österreichisches ensemble für neue musik has dedicated itself to the performance of contemporary music for over 40 years and has established itself internationally as one of the leading ensembles of its kind. With over 300 world premieres since its founding and regular participation at numerous major festivals, the ensemble residing in Salzburg has meanwhile become indispensable on the world's great concert stages. Rupert Huber has conducted many premieres (works by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, Jani Christou and others); he is the founder of the Jani Christou Institute in Athens. Rupert Huber has received prizes for various CD productions (works by Schumann and Nono, e.g.), and was awarded the German Music Critics' Award. He regularly conducts ensembles for new music and orchestras within the German ARD. As a composer, his main lines of thought concentrate on the immediate effect of music itself, and music as a tangible phenomenon ("contact singing"). Altered sentient states created by music such as ecstasy and trance form part of his performance art. Workshops at various conservatories and other institutions on the subject of "research into the effect of music" remain an important part of his work, as do his intensive investigations into the shaman tradition of Nepal. Performed by oenm . österreichisches ensemble für neue musik: Rupert Huber - conductor Andreas Schablas - clarinet.

DAS KLARINETTENDUO Double Concertos by Atli Ingolfsson, Adriana Holszky and Nikolaus Brass CD
The two clarinetists Beate Zelinsky and David Smeyers have worked together since 1980 as Das Klarinettenduo. Their concerts have taken them throughout Europe as well as North America and Japan. Recordings of their classical and modern repertoire have been made in almost all of Germany's radio houses in addition to many foreign stations throughout the world. David Smeyers is professor for contemporary music at the Academy of Music and Dance in Cologne where he founded and directs ensemble 20.21. The Caput Ensemble was founded in 1987 by young Icelandic musicians. It started as a small chamber group but grew rapidly into a sinfonietta with up to 18 players. Most Icelandic composers have worked with Caput, some of them from the beginning. The Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO) is a shining beacon in German orchestral life approximately 65 years after its founding. The MKO's programs -- inspired, exciting and often surprising -- juxtapose works from the past with music from our own time. The MKO has presented over 70 world premieres ever since the former artistic director Christoph Poppen established its unmistakably dynamic profile during the 1990s. Composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Wolfgang Rihm, Tan Dun, Chaya Czernowin, and Jörg Widmann have written works for the ensemble. In the 2016/2017 season, Clemens Schuldt commenced his position as principal conductor. Arturo Tamayo was born in Madrid and studied at the local school of law. At the same time he took a degree in music at the Real Conservatorio de Música, winning an honorary prize in composition. He works with leading European orchestras, appears at the major international festivals and is much sought-after as a conductor of premieres. All the works on this CD were composed for and dedicated to Beate Zelinsky and David Smeyers, who also performed their world premieres. The CD features works composed by Atli Ingolfsson, Adriana Hölszky, and Nikolaus Brass.

STEFFI World Of The Waking State 2LP
Double LP version. Includes download code. Steffi occupies a unique space in the realm of contemporary electronic music. Although she's a world renowned DJ, it's her work as a producer that has established an impressive, hard-won legacy. Soon after moving to Berlin in 2007, Steffi joined Ostgut Ton. To date she's released five albums, including two solo releases for Ostgut Ton, a co-production with Virginia, another with Analogue Cops as Third Side, and a collaboration as Doms & Deykers on Martyn's 3024 label. She owns and operates four labels: Klakson (with Dexter), Dolly, Dolly Deluxe, and Dolly Dubs. World Of The Waking State is Steffi's third solo album for Ostgut Ton and it's a musical departure for her and the label. Over ten tracks she embarks on entirely new electronic terrain for her productions, marking industrial spaces with superlunary warmth while exercising a refined knowledge of polyphony and arrangement. Subdued melodies interact with each other over implied harmonies and microcosmic drum patterns, luring its listeners into a world that is introverted, bewildering, and gratifying all at once. "Different Entities" opens with shaded harmonies and glitchy signals, while the pulsing "Continuum Of The Mind" develops with cyclical melodies swaying through staccato percussion. On "All Living Things", complex rhythms take the attention over the restrained melody. "The Meaning Of Memory" pairs low-slung, squidgy percussion with overcast melodic interactions and "Schools Of Thought" flickers through uncharted interplanetary spaces. "World Of The Waking State" pushes pulsing basslines and woeful refrains through an industrial void, while "Kokkie" flickers with acid tones over the languid bass drive. "Mental Events" paints a shadowy aura driven with echoing snares, and "Bounces Of Nature" flaunts meditative pads and expertly layered percussion. "Cease To Exist" brings together the mangled percussion and subtle melodies of the album to full effect. On World Of The Waking State, Steffi stretches her wings, having created the album in a period when she was free from the past and more comfortable in her own skin. The shift in her mindset led to a new freedom of exploration, enabling her to write more experimentally and logically. Gone are the classic drum sounds and conspicuous melodies of her previous works. Instead, Steffi's productions unify disparate molecular details to forge a greater whole, reflecting a serious commitment to abstract electronic composition. World Of The Waking State is a confident and mature work of complex rhythms and refined melodies.

DR. DRE Dope Beat: The Roadium Swap Meet Mixes LP
"Before Dr. Dre and DJ Yella produced Straight Out Of Compton, before Greg Mack and the KDAY Traffic Jams radio show and before Ruthless Records went multi-platinum, it was a teenage Dr. Dre (then known as The Master of Mixology) making amazing mixes of early rap tracks on cassette as far back as 1985. These were the days of The Radiotron, the 'Cabbage Patch' dance, and the b-boy inspired hip-hop documentary Breakin' and Enterin'. Produced in bulk on cassette and sold at open air markets across Los Angeles, the Dr. Dre mixtapes were ostensibly 4-track 'mash-ups' of all the newest and dopest records of the time. They had simple photocopied covers but they were raw... and they were incredible. Dre's tapes were sold at swap meets, which were just organized yard sales held in giant parking lots, like The Roadium. However, it was at these swap meets that Dr. Dre first made a name for himself by simply adding another dimension to the new west coast style of hip hop. The greatest thing about these tapes was that there were so many jams crammed onto each side, yet only a small percentage of them were actually listed on the covers. This was the next level of mixing capabilities -- layers upon layers on top of each other that was so technically advanced at the time that it was hard to figure out exactly how Dre created them. The choice of tracks and the passion in which the mixes were created is what made them classic. The Roadium Swap Meet Mixes have an untreated and unprocessed sound that will bring you back to the mid-1980s at a time when hip hop was just getting started."

TANAKA, FUMIYA You Find the Key 3x12"
2017 repress; Triple-12" version. The long awaited full-length Perlon debut of Fumiya Tanaka. "Easily Japan's most talented and knowledgeable techno DJ, Fumiya Tanaka brought the sound of minimal, intense techno to Japan during the early '90s, and introduced thousands of club-goers to the best Detroit and German producers via his club nights around Osaka and Tokyo. Born in Kyoto, Tanaka listened to and played in punk bands as a teen, then entered the dance scene in 1990 via house, techno, and hip-hop. He began DJing soon after, and formed Japan's first electronic dance label, Torema Records, in 1993 for his own stripped-down productions. By 1995, Fumiya Tanaka released his first mix album, I Am Not a DJ, on Torema, which by then had gained major distribution through Sony. Later that year, he set up Untitled Records, who paved the way for more experimental techno via the compilation Abstract Set 1. Soon he was spinning around the world -- often in the company of DJ heroes Jeff Mills, Derrick May, and Dave Clarke -- and not long after, the European techno cognoscenti realized that Tanaka wasn't just one of the best DJs in Japan, but around the world." --AllMusic

WANGEL Reasons LP
LP version. Color vinyl. Following on from their debut album Freedom in 2016, here follows Reasons, Wangel's second full-length. Wangel is a collaboration between Peter Wangel and producer Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt. Their music revolves around Peter's characteristic, low voice and Kaspers spherical sound. The album Reasons is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. Written and performed by Peter Wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi-award winning, temporary Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgård and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. Wangel explains: "The previous releases were about the 'lonely' feelings; the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings I wanted to set free for a long time. The new album is about my life as it is right now; about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. This is a very personal album, but I also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to." Also musically the album is a big step forward for Wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors. Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt explains: "We have moved to new places on this album. The song 'Faith' is, for example, something very new to the Wangel universe. It has this dusty vinyl sound and goes in a 6/8 beat. The song 'Emotion Pill' has a hip-hop feel to it and is inspired by the sounds of Rihanna and JAY-Z. When Peter brought the idea to the table, I was overjoyed. I have always wanted to do a Wangel song with this type of beat."

LAVETTE, BETTYE Tell Me A Lie CD
"A rare classic of 1980s soul music. Soul vocalist Bettye LaVette first caught the eye of the music world with her 2005 album I've Got My Own Hell To Raise, which was wildly acclaimed, and was a 'Best-Of-The-Year' pick for innumerable publications. Despite this, LaVette had already been recording as far back as the age of 16, and her earliest singles date all the way back to the early 1960s. From 1962 to 1978 she was strictly a singles artist, cutting potent and high-energy soul, disco, and neo-funk tracks for Atlantic, Epic, and West End Records among others, before landing at Motown in the 1980s. It was during this time that LaVette recorded her full-length debut, 1982's Tell Me A Lie. The Steve Buckingham-produced album was teeming with Southern soul flair across ten solid tracks of Motown greatness that stood firmly in contrast to the electronic, synth-heavy style that R&B espoused at the time. Tell Me A Lie was only a lukewarm commercial success, in spite of the heavy promotion Motown rolled out, but it was highly acclaimed critically, and is oft heralded as an unsung classic of '80s soul. From her ripping, funk-inflected version of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine', to the proto-Pointer Sisters joint 'I Like It Like That', to the title track, which would later render a Billboard Country Songs hit for Janie Fricke."

VA Running Back Mastermix By Tony Humphries CD
Running Back will mark its fifteenth anniversary with the release of its first label compilation, the Running Back Mastermix. As befitting the celebration of a landmark year in the life of Gerd Janson's widely adored imprint, Janson has invited one of house music's original and greatest proponents of the mastermix, New York City's Tony Humphries, to curate and mix the first edition. The Mastermix is a timely reminder of what has made Running Back endure and remain at the top of many house music fans' favorite label lists for over a decade. Beginning with Todd Terje's blockbuster "Ragysh" and traversing tracks from across the label's history, it includes contributions from long time label regulars, alongside more recent additions and reminders of some of Running Back's best reissues. Label mainstays Tiger & Woods, Matthew Styles, Redshape, and Leon Vynehall all appear, alongside Mr G, Paul Woolford and recent breakthrough artists Shan, Jex, and Roy Camanchero. The choice of Tony Humphries to mix the compilation is a significant one. Having received his break in the early '80s as an understudy for the legendary Shep Pettibone's Kiss FM show, Humphries went on to become one of the defining DJs of house music's formative years with his residency at New Jersey's Club Zanzibar and London's Ministry of Sound. His previous mixes illustrate his continuing ability to bridge dance music's past and present, with prior contributions to Resident Advisor and Fabric's respective series in addition to label compilations for King Street Sounds and West End Records. Tony Humphries on the release: "It's truly an honor to partake in this special anniversary Running Back imprint. Gerd Janson's extraordinary palette of releases are unique -- it was a privilege to be involved with this project." CD version features: Todd Terje, Roy Comanchero, Tiger & Woods, Jex, Precious System, Leon Vynehall, Shan, Redshape, Mr. G, Heaven And Earth, Paul Woolford, and Matthew Styles.

VA Welcome To Paradise (Italian Dream House 89-93) Vol. I 2LP
First part of an expansive two-part retrospective of the Italian dream house sound compiled by Safe Trip label founder Young Marco and Christiaan Macdonald. At the tail end of the 1980s, a new take on deep house began to emerge from Italian studios. Dream house drew inspiration from key US deep house records of the period -- the spacey melodiousness of Larry Heard's productions, and the rich jazziness of tracks originating in New Jersey in particular -- but sounded distinctly different. Its "head-in-the-clouds" feel -- all rich chords, tactile basslines, fluid piano lines, and starry electronics -- made dream house a uniquely Italian proposition. First and foremost, the style echoed the wavy, glassy-eyed positivity of the period more than any other. While music in the UK and the low countries was getting faster and heavier, Italy's dream house producers continued to create music shot through with warmth and colorful musicality until 1993. While few dream house records were made after then, the style's sounds and loose aesthetic influenced subsequent styles such as trance and progressive house. During its peak, dream house -- or, as it was tagged by leading Italian label DFC, "ambient house" (echoing the similarly minded work of UK pioneers such as The Orb and The KLF) -- could be heard blaring from club sound systems across Europe. The style's popularity was fueled, in part at least, by the runaway international success of "Sueño Latino." Welcome To Paradise gathers together some of the finest examples of the style for the first time since the turn of the '90s. It includes a smattering of scene anthems, like Key Tronics Ensemble's peerless "Calypso Of House (Paradise Mix)" and the ambient mix of Last Rhythm's Italo-house classic "Last Rhythm" -- alongside a swathe of hard-to-find, in-demand, and forgotten gems. There are cuts from key players in the movement -- the likes of Don Pablo's Animals and Dreamatic -- plus a string of lesser-known names whose contribution to the evolution of the sound should not be overlooked. Over the course of two double-LP sets, Welcome To Paradise celebrates one of the most evocative and imaginative musical styles of electronic music's golden era. Vol. I artist list: Key Tronics Ensemble, Dreamatic, Night Communication, Agua Re, Deep Choice, High Tide, Don Pablo's Animals, Open Spaces, Jacy, K2, and Last Rhythm.

Afterward, Penn was able to play two audio interpretations of his experience. He was visibly shaken. The first Penn called: 'Spare Bobby.' Immediate action must now be taken in order to control the spread of 4-HO-MET amongst the wider civilian population.

But they had also recently completed a successful "twentieth anniversary" concert tour for their debut LP George Best (1987), and having played that entire album dozens of times live, it was fresh in their minds and under their fingers. So, after they'd wrapped up recording El Rey, David Gedge suggested they lay down a "live" version of George Best in the same studio. After all, the equipment was already set up and the band were on fire. Steve Albini, with whom they were recording, initially wasn't too keen on the idea, but David assured him it would be quick and easy. Albini grudgingly caved. But David was right; it was quick... recorded live, more like an early Beatles LP or a Wedding Present Peel Session than a long drawn-out modern recording with a bunch of overdubs and multi-tracked layering. One could almost imagine that this is the version of George Best that David would have liked to have recorded back in 1987. It is just so well done... as you'd expect, of course, with Albini at the controls. But you can also feel David's 20 years older, self-guiding the new recording with experience and confidence. Everything is bigger... the drums on the original recording were played live, but were done on a "Simmons" electronic drum kit. The combination of Albini's recording and the ultra-talented Graeme Ramsay on "real" drums brings these frantic songs to life. However, the real difference comes out in the way those super-fast, ever-jangly guitars sound... they're warmer, they're rockier, they're more modern. More... Albini! To round everything off with another contemporary twist, multi award-winning mixer/producer Andrew Scheps -- last heard on The Wedding Present's ground-breaking Going, Going... album (SCOPITONE 066CD/LP, 2016) -- enthusiastically agreed to mix the finished recordings, having heard the original LP for the first time in his living room in Los Angeles in 2012, when he was mixing The Wedding Present's eighth studio album in 2012, Valentina (SCOPITONE 037CD).

HUNTEMANN, OLIVER Propaganda 3LP
Triple LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Now with over 20 years of releases behind him, Oliver Huntemann finds himself on the cusp of yet a new era in his career. Propaganda is the fifth proper artist album from the Hamburg-based DJ/producer, and like each of its predecessors, it shows a different side to one of the most consistently rewarding names in techno. Released on his own Senso Sounds label, the album exudes the level of assurance that perhaps only comes with being so active in curating and developing a label that has stood out from the masses since its inception in 2014. With four previous artist albums, about ten mix albums and countless EPs and remixes under his belt, Oliver Huntemann is has been one of the leading figures in the techno and tech-house circuit since the late '90s and admired for his unique style and his fascinating DJ sets. Huntemann's fifth full-length album Propaganda is like its predecessors, another step forward in the career of the producer. Here he takes full advantage of the album format. Tracks like "Taktik", "Poltergeist", "Rotlicht", or "Momentum" set the mood with crisp motorik drum programming and deep pulsating basslines, while tracks like "Malaria" create more of a freaked-out and edgy vibe. But there is also room for atmospheric and ambient, downbeat interludes like "Anonym". As a whole, Propaganda is an impressive, versatile, and multi-layered body of work laid out in a state of the art production. Includes download code with four bonus tracks.

Finally, The Early Years' Sonic Cathedral label mate XAM (aka Matthew Benn from Hookworms) stretches out "Fluxus" into 13 exhilarating minutes of Kraftwerk meets New Order. Includes download code.

GUIRAUD, CHRISTOPHE Hiera Picra Hellebores (Collection 2011-2016) 2CD
Christophe Guiraud uses old instruments such as the Hotteterre flute, the viola da gamba, or the viola bass, and combines them with electronics. Christophe Guiraud, born in Toulouse (south of France) in the mid-seventies, lives between Brussels and Paris. His early works come from alternative rock, free jazz, and harsh noise (he released two records on Angström Records as Tellemake). His more recent pieces mix the beauty of the polyphonies of Ars Nova (XIVè century) and noise. This nonesuch hybridization creates a music easily recognizable, and at the same time harmonious and deeply intense. Christophe Guiraud composes for a few important ensembles and performers, like Ictus, Ensemble 21, Sturm und Klang, Kwartludium, Musiques Nouvelles, Fractales, Stephane Ginsburgh, and Tom Pauwels. Guiraud is regularly invited to festivals Sonar, Le printemps de Septembre, Loop, Nuits du Beau Tas et Ars musica. Performed by: Ictus Ensemble, Catherine Guesde & Nina Garcia, Ensemble Tresse, Ensemble La Grive, André-Marc Delcourt, Ensemble 21, Ryan/Mitchell/Zeitlin/Blunt Quartet, Christophe Guiraud, Ensemble/Collectif Bin°oculaire, and Ensemble Sturm und Klang.

PEOPLE LIKE US Early Radio Works Vol.1 Cassette
Vicki Bennett's People Like Us began life as a three-hour radio show on Brighton's Festival Radio in 1990 called Gobstopper. She went on to release around 20 solo albums based on her radio sound collages, and after a decade working primarily with sound, has increasingly worked with film and images. She has recently produced collage and multi-screen, multi-speaker work, including 2013's touring film and performance piece Notations, a film used as a score for improvising musicians, and Gone, Gone Beyond (2017), a ten-screen, eight-speaker, immersive cinema work for Recombinant Media Lab's Cinechamber. Bennett is also the host of long-running radio show DO or DIY on WFMU. Early Radio Works Vol.1 is a re-compiled re-issue of her early radio collages from the '90s and early 2000s, originally first broadcast on the radio then released on CD and vinyl. The set is an enlightened insight into Vicki's early radio collage work and a perfect addition to the People Like Us work cannon. Side A is a new collage created from People Like Us radio works from between 1992-1999. Originally released on Lowest Common Dominator (1994), Jumble Massive (1996), Beware The Whim Reaper (1996), Lassie House (1997), Thermos Explorer (2000), and A Fistful Of Knuckles (2000). Side B is from Guide To Broadcasting (1994) and Thermos Explorer (2000).

WINTER, TERESA Untitled Death LP
Teresa Winter's LP debut Untitled Death is a hallucinogenic wormhole of sensuously ambiguous pop and electronic experiments primed for the after-after party and altered states of reception. Realized through a mesh of strategies from live, lo-fi tape recordings of synths, samplers, and vocals to nascent experiments with algorithmic software, Untitled Death is both a divine revelation of new aspects to Teresa's sound and an expansion of The Death of Rave's as-yet-unidentified aesthetic. Teresa's zoomed photos of magic mushrooms spattered in popping fluorescent oils which adorn the cover of Untitled Death hint at a more personalized insight and psycho-activity, a proper, lush trippiness. Just like the putative psilocybic experience, Untitled Death naturally comes on in waves of synaestically-heightened sensuality, from strangely libidinous stirrings to utter, eat-your-heart-out euphoria with a spectrum of hard-to-explain and unexpected sensations between. It's hard to recall a more seductive album opener than "Oh", which blossoms from plaintive drum machine and chiming pads to a half- or mis-heard beckon "I really like it/ when you let yourself go/ I really want you inside me/ I want to make you my own", before curdling into bittersweet partials and deliquescent hooks as ear-worming as anything from AFX's classic Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (1992). It's devastating in its simplicity and almost blush-worthy in effect, and is soon enough lopped curtly into the soundtrack-like enchantment of "Untitled Death", which could almost be a cue from some '60 Polish or Czech art-house film, serving to neatly set up the prickling, windswept scene of romantic introspection and dereliction in "Pain Of Outside" -- perhaps Teresa's most accomplished and affective pop turn to date; think Grouper awkwardly blissing out at 9am in the corner of a successful sesh/campsite/free party. From that perfectly damaged side closer, the B side opens to a different sort of spine-freezing beauty and sense of abandonment with plangent, dissonant harmonics describing rugged Yorkshire wolds and coast as much as a radiant lightshow on the back of flickering eyelids. RIYL: Grouper, F Ingers, Leyland Kirby, early AFX, Delia Derbyshire. Master and cut by Matt Colton.

PORTER RICKS Anguilla Electrica 2LP
Repressed; double LP version. First full-length in seventeen years from the Chain Reaction/Force Inc. legends. Ever since their initial singles were released in the mid-1990s and became international calling cards for the Chain Reaction label, the Porter Ricks duo of Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig have represented that crucible point in which techno music leaked into new social environments and became the background music for cutting-edge cultural critique. Their submerged "scuba" sound, presented in dark tone colors and reverberating to infinity, is now instantly identifiable as one of the "soundmarks" of Berlin club culture. Just as importantly, it is still a palpable aftershock of a pre-millenial genre explosion that saw deep dub, shimmering post-rock, abstract hip-hop, and art-damaged noise all drinking from the same well of inspiration. For proof of Porter Ricks's enduring legacy, look no further than the fact that "dub techno" is now a stylistic movement that has expanded far beyond the confines of Berlin and the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction label alliance (where Mellwig's mastering skills also played a starring role). Lurid traces of Porter Ricks's aesthetic can now be found in the work of producers like Andy Stott and Miles Whittaker, showing the potential for the duo's unique "aquatic" techniques to be applied to a variety of different musical contexts. Their new LP on Tresor, Anguilla Electrica, may be their first full-length release in seventeen full years, but it radiates with confidence and with a clarity and intensity rarely seen in a world so over-saturated with communications noise. It's made clear at once that it's a continuation of a sonic ideal rather than a tribute to what has already been achieved: the duo is not idly sitting back while their newer acolytes do their talking for them. This new LP is well worth the wait and is a life-affirming one in an uncertain and perilous time, drowning out daily anxieties like a rush of incoming surf -- yet it is far more invigorating than relaxing. True to the Porter Ricks's tradition, it will be just as exciting hearing this music as it will be to experience what new cultural mutations it leaves in its wake.

NARDINI, NINO Musique Pour Le Futur LP
Limited restock. We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present a reissue of Nino Nardini's e Musique Pour Le Futur, originally released in 1970. An experimental, musique concrete, sci-fi masterpiece, available for the first time since 1970. Originally recorded for Crea Sound Ltd., a sub-label of Louis Delacour's Neuilly imprint, Musique Pour Le Futur finds the French composer, arranger, producer, possible time-traveler, and all around music library legend Nino Nardini experimenting with synthesizers, percussions, prepared piano, echo, and special effects. Fans of electronic oddities, eerie cinematic audio-landscapes, Piero Umiliani, or Bernard Parmegiani, will rejoice at this full-length musical adventure that could very well be the soundtrack for a film in which characters from a '70s Italian horror movie visit a distant (forbidden) planet from a '50s sci-movie. It's bizarre, hypnotizing, slightly spooky, always out-of-this-world, and goddamn brilliant. Nino Nardini, also known as Georges Teperino, had a very fruitful career in library music, much like longtime collaborator Roger Roger. He composed a very large amount of works for French and British libraries which continues to be featured in numerous programs (radio, TV, films) all around the world. His passion for electronic music experimentations began in the late '60s and kept going until the '80s. Housed in a phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark, heavy cardboard sleeve.

TAKADA & MASAHIKO SATOH, MIDORI Lunar Cruise CD

Arguably the best kept secret in Midori Takada's fascinating discography, Lunar Cruise is an under-the-radar masterpiece that captures Takada (on marimba and minimal percussion set-up) and Satoh (on Korg M1 and Yamaha DX7II synths, Ensoniq EPS sampler, and acoustic piano) vibrantly fusing traditional African and Asian percussion with jazz, ambient, and minimalism. The album also features the great Haruomi Hosono (Yellow Magic Orchestra, Happy End) and Kazutoki Umezu (saxophone, clarinet).Sourced from the original studio masters (DATs); New liner notes with a poster inlay.
