HEARTLESS Impulse Model 12"
The first release from Heartless on Steve Bicknell's 6dimensions. Acid-tinged techno lives throughout the EP. Hazy modular sequences, sizzling precision crushed atop of a constant kick drum creating an organic aesthetic. Impulse Model exudes human emotion, the EP's emotional depth lies beneath its techno construct within coarse and bruised production which gives the release a confidently imperfect aura. The production process for Heartless is a "way of absorbing things that have happened and completely escaping from them." Ultimately, Heartless has composed an EP that condones escapism whilst the listener stays firmly rooted in their emotional state.

BICKNELL, STEVE Awakening The Past - 1 12"
Steve Bicknell's Awakening The Past features three tracks from Why? + For Whom?, originally released in 1996. "Physical Life" opens with a rawness that is carried through the EP. With tape hiss underpinning the track, Bicknell's signature bass grumbles hold together hi-hats which progressively filter in-and-out over the course of the track. "Natural Vibrations" boasts an erratic and high-pitched 303 sequence that shows a bit of experimentalism. "Fearing The Minds Fears" paints a tense atmosphere. lashings of motorik modular synth are added with little fuss. Finally, "Conscious Awakening" drives the EP to a close with dizzying pace.

LIPINSKI, ALEX Alex LP
LP version. 180 gram colored vinyl. Alex Lipinski's caressing sympathy, full-throated resentment, and the raw rockabilly excitement of earliest Elvis have grabbed unwary listeners from the West Country to Krakow, Berlin and New York, since he first left Somerset to become a crucial habitué of Soho's legendary, lost 12-Bar Club. He has followed in the footsteps of his hero Dylan to write in the Chelsea Hotel, and sung Elvis songs in the home of an admiring Liam Gallagher, who responded with a roaring "Acquiesce". With older brother and fellow musician Adam Lipinski by his side at Newcombe's residential studio in Berlin, Alex basically took six hours. "Anton put a lot of time and energy in. I recorded with an old guitar, because he wanted to capture the effortless, timeless '60s records that he had in his mind. We had initially planned to be in the studio for three or four nights. The first evening we rattled though the songs, a take or two of each and in those six hours everything clicked. By midnight we were done. We ended the evening by going to a great bar called 8mm. Anton set up a gig there the following night and played old folk records, then we played a live set. We added small overdubs on the record later. But the album captures the character of the songs live with no frills. The slight imperfections add to the feel. Anton taught me about perfect mistakes." Lipinski's life has been one of wanderlust. His sister lived in Krakow for many years, where Lipinski visited regularly, and "felt right at home". "The Jewish Quarter where King Jan Olbracht put the Jews to live, before their liquidization in the war, is very haunted. Candlelit bars, dimly lit, with jazz music and Jewish music playing, in buildings that are really old." Moving to London, he wandered down "the street where the Kinks and Stones used to rehearse, bars where Lennon and McCartney used to drink, and Dylan played." Winning the MBF Songwriting award in 2008 helped him tour New York state and Pennsylvania, trailing yet more rock ghosts as he explored Harlem, and stayed at the Chelsea Hotel. He's currently back in Weston, Bristol's bohemia gives him city life, alongside regular trips to Brooklyn, and Manchester.

ALVARIUS B. With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven - Vol. 2 A Mark Twain August LP
Alvarius B. on With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven - Vol. 2 A Mark Twain August: "This is Volume Two of my new three LP set, and it's called A Mark Twain August. Now don't go asking me what the fuck that title means but I will say that it may be my favorite of the three. My 'fans', all 133 of them, are pretty smart. I used to think only 67 people mattered on earth, now it could be far less, but it's beginning to trouble me how I've actually accumulated 133 fans. So if you're not a moron, I don't mind if you buy this record. I made more copies than I have fans so I need to expand on the audience a bit but I don't want fucking idiots buying my albums. A brand new car loses value the moment you drive it home, but my records will always go up in value (like my Dodge Ram Van which tripled in value when I drove it off the lot) so this is also an investment opportunity. If you were to walk slowly on a hot bed of coals you may discover that Don McLean never actually drove his Chevy to the levy and that the singer-songwriter is dead, just like all the poets. What do contemporary poets and the entire Indonesian population have in common? Most of you cannot name even one of them. Homo Sapiens now love to complain and act as if they know how the world works by 'expressing' themselves on their social media networks -- that's become the new poetry. And I think there are only nine people writing songs today that I respect, I'd have to check to make sure. And the Thinking Fellars were a great band -- I could name a dozen more from the past 30 years that I'd call contemporaries, but that's about it. . . . And I almost forgot to mention that Mark Twain's old banjo appears on this record. Oh and this is better than that Wolf King of LA album by Papa John Phillips, for all those who got mesmerized by it 30 years after it came out. There's only three or four good tracks on that and A Mark Twain August has six great tracks on it, at least. One-time pressing; Includes printed inner sleeve with lyrics and credits.

ALVARIUS B. With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven - Vol. 3 Heathen Folklore LP
Alvarius B. on With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven - Vol. 3 Heathen Folklore: "Serial killing was one of history's greatest art forms. Now it's becoming almost impossible to get a skull-drilling startup off the ground unless you murder for the corporations or governments where you have highly organized protection from any enforceable law but at the expense of sacrificing all the glory for the anonymity required to maintain employment. So, unfortunately, the days of any zit topography random commoner being able to string together a few killings to hit the big time before being caught has almost come to an end. Sad. This record, the third and final volume of my new three-LP set called Heathen Folklore, could serve as somewhat of a manual of inspiration on how one could start such a career, as risky and unpopular as it is. It gets much more fucked-up than the previous two LPs, and sometimes I think it's the best one due to that aspect. I'd have to give it one more listen but I also think this is the LP with coded messages that could trigger an unsuspecting listener to start his/her career in extreme behavior. But killing isn't everything you know. There are many more ways to express yourself and reach the top of the charts these days. In fact, I saw Burt Bacharach three weeks ago gripping a huge fucking machete while chasing modern dance music architects off his champion ship and into deep water where they hopefully became shark bait. And to set the record straight, Jimi Hendrix did not fake his death and become Morgan Freeman nor was Hunter S. Thompson directing snuff films. But most of that other weird shit you hear about these days is probably true. And I'm working on a film called 'Being Alvarius B.' where all of you loser fucks crawl into my brain and see yourselves from my perspective and then commit collective suicide because you finally realize I was right all along. And I am. Can't wait to make more albums so I can write these album descriptions. Cocksuckers." One-time pressing; Includes printed inner sleeve with lyrics and credits.

ALVARIUS B. With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven 2CD
Alvarius B. on the two-CD version of With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven: "This is my brand new 35 song, two-CD set which is also being released via three single LPs. If you really want to know more about the music, search for the LP version descriptions online (I'm sure they were copy/pasted across many websites) where you'll discover a treasure of valuable assessments contained within. This two-CD edition is primarily being made available to facilitate 41 of my 133 'fans' who will be thrilled that it comes out on Compact Disc -- and at an affordable price in comparison to what buying all three LPs would cost. I think I pressed at least 172 copies of this two-CD so there is room for another 39 'fans' to climb aboard my champion ship. I keep hearing that many of the CDs you've acquired in the past don't work anymore. CDs are supposed to rot, scratch and die after a few years and have therefore become a flawed medium. Sounds more like a pragmatic description of humanity to me. But I have thousands of CDs. Some are commercially manufactured discs and the rest are CDRs and every single one of them works. Yep, I hired a bearded guy from New Hampshire to check them all and many are 10, 15, or 20 years old. But my mother always told me I was blessed. Or perhaps I have a magic CD player? But people used to say the same about cassettes and now tapes are the cat's fuckin meow. In fact, I know a record store owner who recently sold an entire car full of cassettes. So don't bring your CDs when you jump aboard Julijonas Urbonas' suicide roller coaster (which hopefully gets built soon in order to facilitate plenty of you imbeciles) -- leave them behind for others to enjoy. Getting back to my new album, go find my sampler on YouTube if you want to know what it sounds like. It's better than your new album, that's for sure. Maybe I'll have to do a cassette version of this record in the future so that I can write another one of these fuckin' promotional sheets." Two-CD version comes in a digipak and collects all 35 tracks on the three LP volumes; Includes a 24-page booklet with artwork and with all lyrics and credits.

FRANCE Occitanie LP
Aguirre Records present the first vinyl edition of France's Occitanie, originally released in 2009. Savage pulsating drone-rock from France, the trio of Jeremie Sauvage on electric bass, Mathieu Tilly on drums, and Yann Gourdon on amplified hurdy-gurdy. They play one note/one rhythm, producing energetic performances reminiscent of the early collaborations between Faust and Tony Conrad. Creatively recycled influences result in intense shows with pounding overtones and repetitive pulsing rhythms. Loud, straight, and trance-inducing. On Occitanie, in the mass of sound, the rhythmic repetition and the elongated drones. The hurdy-gurdy forces you deeper, highlighting points of microtonal flux, cracking open the single note, the nodding rhythm, to imply the presence of every note, every sound, inside it. The insensible evolution lurks in a corner of noise and finally imposes itself slowly on careful listening. The band members of France perform in various other projects: Tanz Mein Herz, Toad and Jérico, all are member of the collective La Novià, an organization based in Haute-Loire which brings together professional musicians and acts as a place for reflection and experimentation around traditional and or experimental music. In 2009, France was invited to play in Pau, a city far south-west of France, next to Spain, by the people running Pagans Musica, a like-minded traditional-oriented group of people, also bent on educational issues concerning the local music and dialect: Occitan and on fusing traditional musics and rock related sounds and instruments. They had set up a show for France and their band Artus and originally wanted to have Acid Mothers Temple join the bill. The Japanese band had done versions of songs coming from their village, but weren't touring near France so instead they invited Duo Ancelin-Rouzier as the third act, a band both Artus and France were also very fond of. Pagans had everything set-up for the concert to be recorded and as France had plenty of time for sound-check, they went on to record the Pau album (2011) in the afternoon, taking a thirty seconds pause in the middle of the session so as to mark both sides of the vinyl. Occitanie is a recording of the live set later that night, with no cut and a longer, more savage performance. Artwork by Standard In-Fi Visuals. Recorded live by Tòmas Baudoin and Yannick Prévost; Mastering by Kris Delacourt. High-glossy sleeve; Edition of 500.

With hard-to-define instruments, Varkenshond creates ritual and tribal madness in the vein of early Silvester Afang and Zero Kama. FIFTY FOOT HOSE Cauldron LP
Aguirre Records present the first official vinyl reissue of Fifty Foot Hose's Cauldron, originally released on Limelight in 1967. Cauldron is the legendary psychedelic jazzy rock and electronic album by Californian band Fifty Foot Hose. Fifty Foot Hose formed in San Francisco in 1967. Like few other acts of their time, they consciously tried to combine the contemporary sounds of rock with electronic instruments and avant-garde compositional ideas. They were one of the most radical groups of the psychedelic era, and their experimentalism still has the power to shock and surprise even now. What set them apart were the pioneering experiments in electronic music, like the band they are often compared to, The United States of America. Incorporating Theremin, siren, audio generators, and other various electronic effects, as Cork Marcheschi, the band's original bass player, had developed an acute interest in the dadaist/futurist experiments of composers like John Cage and Edgar Varese. David and Nancy Blossom brought both psychedelic and jazz influences to the band. Cauldron, their only album, was released in December 1967, including "Fantasy", "Red The Sign Post", and "God Bless The Child", a Billie Holiday cover. Their sound experiments differentiated them from their contemporaries and most audiences didn't quite know what to make of them. Fifty Foot Hose's music leans more towards White Noise, Silver Apples, and especially United States of America, rather than to flower power movement. After only one album, the proto-cyber psych outfit passed as quickly as they came. Their only mention would be a name-check in Ralph J. Gleason's 1969 book, The Jefferson Airplane And The San Francisco Sound, published over a year after their demise. Ralph J. Gleason wrote: "I don't know if they're immature or premature." History has proven them to be the latter. Today, the original album is very collectable and considered a touchstone of avant-garde rock music. Cork Marcheschi on the record: "The concept was to expand what contemporary popular music was. I thought the avant-garde could have had a home with this new group of listeners but they turned out to be pretty conservative -- intellectually. Drugs were fine -- sex was fine -- stop the wars was good but when challenged with abstract art., they reacted like conservative people look at a Jackson Pollock painting." Cover reconstruction by Jeroen Wille. Remastered by Equus. Includes replica of the original insert. 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 1000.

ACID JESUS Flashbacks 1992-1998 2CD
Following the title of the classic Ecstasy Club record (1988) -- be it a direct influence or merely a coincidence -- Acid Jesus was the first of many collaborations between Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke. Situated in Germany's then blistering techno scene and especially a mirror of Frankfurt at the time, the early recordings on Flashbacks are also a feedback loop to what was happening in the UK and the USA before and at that very time. With many definitions and interpretations of techno already in place, and while its triumphal procession slowly geared itself into exhaustion, Flügel and Wuttke succeeded with their own, unique take on it, that owed as much to Underground Resistance and The Belleville Three as it did to Sven Väth and Andrew Weatherall. Depicting the booster detonation of what was to become the holy label trinity of Playhouse, Klang, and Ongaku, this is a collection of tracks and experiments in sound that won't sound dated, yet classic, mesmerizing and eternal.Double CD version includes 21 classic tracks and two previously unreleased tracks; the first CD includes the Klang released debut album from 1993, which collected a string of tracks written and produced between December '92 and July '93, while the second CD gathers the later stage of Acid Jesus with a selection of music from the Fear (1994), Radiation (1994), and Interstate (1997) EPs; Double CD version includes booklet.

VA Fundamentum 2LP
Atmophile Electronics, a new Berlin based label focuses on atmospheric side of techno, launches with a compilation called Fundamentum. Made up by eight tracks on double-vinyl, Fundamentum brings together the most contemporary techno-talents. All tracks are exclusive to this release. The first dronish intro track is from the two label founders Naty Seres and Ankurbln: rough in the sound, it's slowly building up to mellow harmonies; followed by a suiting and melodic drifting song of Sofus Forsberg who is looking back to decades and multiple albums of IDM music creations. The B side of the first record starts with a track from Polar Inertia which displays what the French producers are known for: an extremely detailed arrangement and their trademark, unique sound design. Next is a solo track by Ankurbln. Both experimental and spacious, it shows a slight tendency towards house and minimal music in the sound image, but keeping atmospheric weirdness at heart. The second record is opened by no other than Matrixxman, with a groovy beat full of harmonic spaces, showing the versatility that he is known for. Takaaki Itoh follows with a track that focuses on groove and danceability without losing the connection to trippiness. Coming to the D side of the release, the listener gets pulled into the heavily modulated drones and powerful kicks of the techno legend Mike Parker, doing what he does best. The closing track is from Alderson Disk, a Berlin based producer who has a long history of west-coast bass music production with another alias, presenting a refreshing blend of techno and bass music vibes, full of groove changes and curious drum patterns.

CHEN & ROBBIE LEE, CHE The Spectrum Does LP
On The Spectrum Does, New York avant-rock musicians Che Chen and Robbie Lee create three earthy and slow-moving pieces, informed as much by various global folk traditions as they are by 20th century composition and improvisation. Their "anything goes" approach to improvising leads to a sonic document that sounds raw, intense, and freshly exciting. A wild and shambolic brew that sounds like nothing else. Che Chen is musician and visual artist currently best known for his work with percussionist Rick Brown as 75 Dollar Bill. In the mid-2000s, he formed this duo with composer and producer Robbie Lee, who at the time played with people like Baby Dee and Neil Hagerty. Their most concentrated period of activity is bookended by a first LP they self-released in 2008 called Begin, And Continue! and this record, The Spectrum Does, which contains music recorded several years later. On The Spectrum Does, both tackle a range of unconventional instruments like bass recorders, Renaissance clarinet, glissando flute, tarogato, electrified violin, ultraslow recorders, and custom modified tape machines. While their first LP documented their earliest, mostly acoustic improvisations, The Spectrum Does captures Che and Robbie after five or so years of meeting two or three times a week and multiple tours around the country (a couple of times as a part of Jozef van Wissem's band Heresy Of The Free Spirit). By now what was pulsing out of their little overdriven tube amps was even more electrified and warped. Sounds of unknown origin seem to bubble up to the surface, met by completely unique approaches to wind and string instruments. Much boundary pushing improvised music gets described as "outer limits" but on The Spectrum Does, it seems much more right to say they explore the "inner limits". It is deep listening music, but not minimalist; complex but not virtuosic. Dissonances intermingle with folk harmonies and rhythms. As with all of the music this duo made together, there's a sort of shambolic-shamanic sensibility to it, but without a motive or explicit purpose. To be filed close to Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Pelt, and The Dead C. Personnel: Robbie Lee - flute, tarogato, melodica, great bass recorder, electronics, percussion; Che Chen - violin, harmonium, bass recorder, tape machine, electronics, percussion. Cover painting by Che Chen; Typography by Jeroen Wille. Recorded and mixed by Robbie Lee; Mastered by Jack Allett. Edition of 300.

ALLETT, JACK The Object Isn't There LP
With The Object Isn't There, UK guitar player and producer Jack Allett has made a deeply personal masterpiece based around cyclical guitar parts and electronic percussion. Playing like a half-remembered fever dream with an aesthetic that is ragged, hypnotic, and spacey, its two side-long pieces touch on minimalism, kraut-infused dub, and euphoric dancefloor optimism. As comfortable being played after Manuel Göttsching's album E2-E4 (MGART 424CD) as right before a Terekke lo-fi house anthem, it is laced with the melancholy of an early morning post-rave comedown. Yet for all the references and name-checking, it's a record that is hard to compare to anything else, past or present. This record is about - insofar as instrumental music need be about anything - hallucinations. The title The Object Isn't There serves as a concise definition, derived from the quote "A hallucination is a strictly sensational form of consciousness, as good and true a sensation as if there were a real object there. The object happens to be not there, that is all." (William James, The Principles Of Psychology, 1890) Having experienced constant tinnitus -- a form of auditory hallucination -- for the last 13 years, Jack has long questioned the distinction of something experienced as being either there or not-there. Even if, strictly speaking, a hallucination is something that's not there, if the reality of how it affects day-to-day existence is undeniable then to any extent that matters, it is there. But The Object Isn't There is no tale of woe, nor simply a response to this one condition, and tinnitus need not be considered only as distressing or distracting. Allett sees it merely as one example of many things in life that cross this uncertain terrain. Allett explains: "There are obvious parallels here with the notion of active listening. There is room for emotion too, particularly an overwhelming, all-consuming emotion. Essentially the music here is concerned with being overwhelmed by a sensation, never really being sure to what extent you are conjuring it up yourself, to what extent it exists independently of you, but ultimately deciding that it doesn't much matter; the sensation itself was undeniable." The Object Isn't There was written, recorded, and mixed in Camberwell and Camden, London, UK (2012-2016). Artwork by Graham Lambkin; Design by Jeroen Wille. Mastered by Jack Allett. Edition of 300.

HONG KONG DONG Kala Kala LP
Hong Kong Dong is a quizzical synth-electronic band from Ghent formed by three distinct minds. Together they evoke a very peculiar and twisted sound. One of the gang members is Bolis Pupul who has released two EPs on Soulwax's DeeWee label. He is the band's synth guru and singer with a unique and delicate voice that flows like a horny tai chi master. He's also involved with other bands like The Germans, Charlotte Adigéry, and Wwwater. Sister Sarah Yu is the furious female singer and illustrator artist who brings with her the playful vibe of a child tossing around a Play-Doh microphone. The man behind the tweaked beats and guitars is Geoffrey Burton, the maestro guitar player/producer who prefers to make his guitar sound like a synth or a cracking bird. He's been around for some time now, earning his place in bands as Arno, Daan, Alain Bashung, Sophie Hunger, and Misia.

BRAME & HAMO Trants EP 12"
Brame & Hamo take full control with their debut release on their fresh, personal imprint. "Trants" is awash in a retro-futurist haze, flavors of early bleep techno, dusty drums, and outright trance flavors provide the ingredients for a euphoria-inducing trip. Things get much tougher throughout "Hurt You", which begins with an immediate strike of chunky percussion, jacking Chi-town rhythms, and a menacing organ line. "Clarence" lives up to its "Smooth Mix" subtitle, as a lounging piano line gently gives way to vibrant sax and a soothing female vocal sample, while still maintaining an irresistible groove.

TIHISTA, KEVIN Modern Standard CD
2013 release. In 2012, Kevin Tihista re-emerged after a seven-year hiatus with the widely acclaimed On This Dark Street. At the time Kevin had put aside some of his more upbeat songs that he had written for a later date. An album called Modern Standard was originally planned (and much delayed) to be the official follow-up to the hugely acclaimed Wake Up Captain (2004) and the equally well received Home Demons Vol 1 that swiftly followed in 2005. Broken Horse present Modern Standard which sees Kevin returning with his most optimistic and accessible set of songs since his 2001 debut Don't Breathe A Word. Not that Kevin himself necessarily agrees with this assessment: "I don't think I'd ever be accused of being too optimistic. Maybe less dire? There are a few songs on the new record that do have a glimpse of hope in them though. 'The City', 'Happy People Shut Your Mouths', and 'On My Way' would be those few. For the most part, I don't let my songs get too sunny. I have Slayer and Morrissey to thank for that. I would agree that compared to On This Dark Street, Modern Standard has more pop elements to it. I'd say 'The City' pretty much makes up for every doom and gloom song I've ever written. It gave me a cavity when I wrote it." With On This Dark Street under his belt, Kevin and his label Broken Horse planned a much more positive record that played to his strengths and reinforced his reputation as one of America's finest songwriters. Modern Standard is a stunning showcase of Tihista's songwriting talents. It's an embarrassment of riches, with one great song after another, and it's not hard to imagine that each one could be a listener's favorite.

DOUGLAS, CHARLES Statecraft (Expanded Edition) 2CD
Broken Horse present an expanded reissue of Charles Douglas's Statecraft, originally released in 2004. Charles Douglas wandered out of a Manhattan recording studio where he was putting the finishing touches on what was to become his final album, Statecraft. Featuring Joey Santiago of the Pixies on lead guitars, and recorded by Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. producer Wharton Tiers, the album was intended as a huge step forward for this iconoclastic indie rocker, who had started out as a teenager in Dayton, Ohio. His previous studio album, The Lives of Charles Douglas (1999), had been a raw Ramones-meets-VU-meets-Jonathan Richman blast of energy, featuring Maureen Tucker on drums and production. Statecraft was meant as a much more fleshed-out affair, featuring offbeat horns and strings alongside the guitar assault of Douglas and Santiago's unmistakable signature sound. Statecraft went on to gather praise from the likes of David Bowie (who sent a fan letter) and John Waters. From the sleeve notes: "David Bowie's letter arrived in a large white envelope that looked like some sort of bizarre wedding invitation. My girlfriend got it from the mailbox. To my surprise, when we opened it, there was a letter from Bowie inside saying that he loved Statecraft, and that I must keep up the good work, and make more music for him to enjoy." Statecraft brims with skewed, gritty pop tunes, and it suggests that Charles Douglas was at the culmination of his demented artistic powers. But unfortunately Douglas, unhappy with the protracted recording process and concerned about relapsing into the substance abuse, left New York City, abandoned the sessions, and moved to North Carolina, turning down a major label record deal in the process. Wharton Tiers ended up mixing and sequencing sixteen of the songs, and overseeing the initial release of Statecraft. Despite the initial acclaim, the album quickly drifted into obscurity. After Broken Horse reissued The Lives of Charles Douglas (2010), as well as a retrospective called Not Your Kind of Music (2012), the label learned that Douglas had recorded over thirty-five songs in the studio for Statecraft, and initially planned to make a double album. Many of the songs that were recorded and discarded are hidden gems: Pavement-esque pop, stripped-down rock, and giddy weirdness. This reissue collects all of the studio tracks from the sessions, adding nineteen rare and unreleased songs. Includes a 28-page booklet of liner notes written by Charles Douglas.

Samples of tribal singers add a distinct human element, entrancing you with their organic vibrations. "Makha Poetry" is a more experimental workout with a variety of warped and twisted effects spluttering and wobbling away at its foundation. The jaunty yet slightly eerie low-end gives this track a naughty allure.

SABAT, MARC Les Duresses LP
2014 release. Les Duresses emerges through a prism of speculative intonation. Marc Sabat uncovers an opening of tonal possibilities that he roots in an unfinished composition for solo violin by Morton Feldman. From its enigmatic notation and the conceptual tendencies expressed by Feldman, Sabat determines that the fragment is written in an alternate tonal space. Throughout Les Duresses, this space is given shape and consideration. Sabat draws on a sound world, not from Feldman, but like Feldman, that invites listeners to absorb themselves in longer durations where patterns can unfold. It comes from an imaginary American folk music, full of meandering, drifting, and at times, exuberance.

LA BAND DEL BRASILIANO Vol. 2 CD
The Tuscany big band La Band Del Brasiliano is back for their second studio album, Vol. 2, following Vol. 1 released in 2013. The band draw on the retro tradition of Italian easy listening, funk, and sexy comedy, presenting a set rich in sung songs and with a large number of original tracks compared to Vol. 1, as well as with the contribution of bows, percussions, and a complete brass section. In Vol. 2, you can locate three lines: One that develops the soul beat of the band, shamelessly retro in the musical and textual approach: mostly captured in straightforward songs, like "Impossibile", "Hey Ragazzo", and "Preparati Bambina", are a blend of rock n' roll and raw soul, with the two voices of Serena Altavilla (Solki, Mariposa, Calibro 35) and Davide Arnetoli. The other is a romantic soul, tied to passion and jealousy, that is expressed best in the almost noir atmosphere of the triptych "Un'ora In Più", "Il Tema Della Gelosia", and "Anna - La Domenica". But even in "La Verità" the story of emancipation and freedom is present, with musical veins from spy story. The third line is funk and eroticism, as in "Ti Voglio", the favorite Italian disco song of the band which anticipates the release of the album as a whole -- the sulfur "Eclisse Twist" from Antonioni's masterpiece, "Giovani Di Nulla" and "92° Minuto", conceived as imaginary characters of TV programs.

JACKSON, WANDA There's A Party Goin' On LP
Cornbread Records present a reissue of Wanda Jackson's There's A Party Goin' On, originally released in 1959. The first female singer of the early rock and roll era, Wanda was encouraged to try rock and roll by Elvis Presley himself. It was 1955 when Wanda met Elvis during the "Ozark Jubilee", a country tour through the south. She didn't think she had the voice for it, but he disagreed. He even recommended some songs for her. At first she was reluctant, but she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records and decided to give it a try. During the next few years, Wanda produced numerous examples of raw, prototypical rock & roll. The most distinctive aspect was her voice. She developed a wild, growling sound that at times sounds possessed or strangely alien, capable of going from sweet innocence to hellcat at the push of a button. Originally released in 1959 during the "Queen of Rockabilly"'s prime at Capitol Records, There's A Party Goin' On features a solid collection of songs in tune with the title track, as well as covers of a handful of early rock hits such as "Tweedlee Dee" and "Kansas City". The set is highlighted by the staggering guitar playing of Roy Clark as exemplified on the standout cut "Hard Headed Woman". Includes two bonus tracks. Reissued here on 180 gram vinyl; Includes download card.

AWANTO 3 Gargamel 2LP
Amsterdam's cult producer and DJ Steven van Hulle, aka Awanto 3, likes his samples vibrant, his drums wobbly, and his synths sweaty as a Detroit summer breeze. The MPC wizard returns to Dekmantel delivering his second, full-length album. Gargamel is arguably his most compelling piece of work. Spread over the course of nine tracks, van Hulle shows he's capable of serving up many different styles and genres in his ever-expanding arsenal. The Rednose Distrikt affiliate kicks things off with his friend and co-producer Darling. "Azrael" builds over shuffling, infectious rhythms, a cluster of vocal stabs and heartfelt keys. "This Is When We Met", "Why Don't You", and "Gargamelancholia" on the other hand, are aggressive, batty-jackin' peak-time tracks embracing classic acid aesthetics, while "Positive Negative" is a stretched-out house jam incorporating the tussle of wonky boogie and tribal bumps. Van Hulle drops the tempo on "Hooli Goose", taking slow release hypnosis turns while making a marching band sound cool. The dry drum machines, melted bass and schizo sounds of "Ride The Dragon" will appeal to the freaks, and the dreamy "Happy Bird" is a tripped-out set of ambient and lo-fi themes. Last but not least, Dexter enters the stage to do what he does best with "Thick": show who's the boss of the 808 with a straight-up electro essential.

PARASOLE, ANTHONY Infrared Vision 2LP
Anthony Parasole's music fits the bill for cutting-edge electronic music. Infrared Vision is a display of his love for polyrhythmic drum patterns, post-club sketches, twisted dancefloor gems, and classy, big room-ready tunes. A few words from Parasole: "When I started to conceptualize my album I had a few end goals. I wanted to string my own style through Infrared Vision, so it would be familiar to the people who like my music. In tandem, I strived to produce a fresh voice sonically and experimented with a few new production techniques. I also grabbed ideas outside of techno and house, because I didn't want to be influenced by anything new. I was listening to a lot of jazz, hip-hop, Nine Inch Nails, and Prince for example." Parasole took his time to write, produce, and record Infrared Vision, dividing the process into three steps. He explains, "First I wrote the album in words, pinning down ideas and track concepts on a notepad. Subsequently I transferred my ideas to my gear. Due to a heavy tour schedule I sometimes brought gear with me on the road, to continue my sketch process on the hardware. I then recorded it at home and at Phil Moffa's studio in New York. When the music was fully finished the album morphed to its final version. Phil Moffa laid down the final mixdown at Butcha Sound Studios, while Marco Spaventi handled the mastering."

DETTMANN, MARCEL Selectors 003 2LP
Following celebrated compilations from Motor City Drum Ensemble (SLCTRS 001CD/LP, 2016) and Young Marco (SLCTRS 002CD, 2017), Dekmantel's Selectors series now continues with an edition curated by Marcel Dettmann. Although he's now known as one of the world's most celebrated techno artists, even Marcel Dettmann had to start somewhere. Long before he ever held court at Berghain (or its predecessor, Ostgut), he was just another young boy in Eastern Germany, one whose earliest encounters with capitalism involved spending every penny he could scrape together down at the local record shop. In those days, it wasn't techno that got him excited, but new wave, post-punk, industrial, and EBM acts like Front 242 and Depeche Mode. "It's music from my childhood," says Dettmann. "It's still relevant and still inspires me." That inspiration can be heard across this edition of the Selectors series, as Dettmann has put together what he describes as a "pre-techno compilation". Much like the previous Selectors editions, the compilation is not a mix CD, but a collection of tracks hand-picked by Dettmann from his own vinyl archives. Freshly remastered -- and occasionally reworked or re-edited by Dettmann himself -- the songs here are undoubtedly vintage gems, but they also represent a very personal journey into Dettmann's past. "It was a great opportunity to dig deeper into my own musical outlook," he explains. "The tracks come from a time before Marcel Dettmann became a DJ." Simply put, the songs here are some of the building blocks upon which he's built an incredibly storied career, and now he'd like to entrust them to future generations. Features: Front 242, The Force Dimension, Executive Slacks, Martin Dupont, A Thunder Orchestra, Twice A Man, Cabaret Voltaire, Kaa Antilope, Clan Of Xymox, Ministry, and Fad Gadget.

LITTLE AXE London Blues CD
"The future of blue note... !" Twenty-three years ago, this quotation foretold a great career for Little Axe, aka Skip McDonald. The musician had already had a taste of fame with the Sugarhill Gang backing band / Tommy Boy Cooperations and their hip-hop masterpieces, writing music history along the way. Then he rolled out Little Axe and gave the blues a new, groovy face. Releases on legendary labels like Okeh Records, Realworld, On-U Sound, and majors like Sony, BMG, Warner, etc. followed. On-U Sound label mastermind Adrian Sherwood has always given Skip a platform to present his entrancing blend of blues, gospel, Cajun, dub, and trip hop: pioneering and authentic at the same time. His sound takes the essence and sound samples from blues legends such as Howlin' Wolf, Leadbelly, and Son House and distils them to create musical visions that are both penetrating and highly hypnotic. Little Axe has released seven albums to date; London Blues is his eighth official album. Old mates, like Mark Stewart (Pop Group, Maffia), Doug Wimbish (bass player for Living Colour), Keith LeBlanc (drummer), Perry Melius (drummer for African Head Charge) have provided assistance -- and JebLoy Nichols collaborated on writing. London Blues sticks tenaciously to tradition -- to the blues -- but at the same time is infused with a plethora of musical lingos. The new album is packed with songs that glitter and shine with strokes of production genius and imaginative arrangements. On London Blues, Skip McDonald's creative team is even more sophisticated and innovative than on the predecessor albums. Amazing instrumentals ("Be Thankful"), a touch of gospel ("Deep River"), splashes of trip hop with blues harp ("Next Week Thursday"), and Delta blues meets dub ("When I Rise") -- the album meticulously follows a trail between Chicago and London, blending all the stepping stones to form a smooth, irresistible pathway. CD version includes seven bonus tracks.

AND Social Decay 3LP
Although there are hundreds of newer electronic music acts who wield heaviness and saturated sound as their primary weapons, AnD keeps finding bold new ways to separate themselves from the rank and file. The production duo of Andrew and Dimitri -- conduits for the industrial music legacy of Manchester -- excel at showing that aesthetic extremity does not have to equal monotony. Social Decay is simultaneously one of their most overwhelming and most innovative efforts. This visceral new release comes from the same hazardous, blasted terrain that informs the work of kindred spirits like Kerridge, Oake, and Justin Broadrick's many projects. Whereas AnD's previous album Cosmic Microwave Background (EDLX 038CD/LP) utilized the duo's intensity to pay homage to the enormity of the universe and the incomprehensibly violent processes involved in its creation, Social Decay takes things back to earth and right down to a "street view" more gritty and contentious than what Google Maps often reveals. Beginning with a feedback-drenched, shuddering premonition of things to come ("First Element"), each successive side of the album presents a new level of intensity, itself brought about by increasing levels of tempo and compositional coherence. The first suite of tracks, including "Corrupted Structures" and "Anarchic Rhapsody", is pure industrial music comprised of multi-layered noise collage, venomous and half-comprehensible whisperings, and rhythm structures that compel listeners to maintain an obedient posture rather than to ecstatically hit the dancefloor. Without completely abandoning this atmosphere, the next four or five tracks flirt more heavily with hip-hop inflected beats and an unmistakable sense of hyper-urban vigilance. Window-rattling tracks such as "Pandemonium" come across like urban audio camouflage meant to defend its users against surveillance by shadowy and invasive entities, while "Screaming Voices" adds infectious EBM sequences to the mix. Just as it seems like the duo is settling in to a groove, the mutant drum-and-bass rhythm and cinematic bombast of "Resisting Authority" strikes with explosive high-tempo energy. "Taking Control" and "Kepler" provide the effective aftershocks to this number, while "Disturbed Reality" closes out the album in an unexpected sense. While many would rely on a reflective, ambient "outro" to help fade listeners back into reality, AnD just keep continuing to deliver the crunching beats and looped warning cries, maybe hinting at the fact that reality is not far removed at all from this record's representation of it.

METRO AREA Metro Area 3LP
In the late nineties, the budding producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani bonded over their shared love of slower tempos and '70s and '80s New York City club culture. Obsessed with record digging and the sounds they heard on late-night "club classics" radio shows -- and turned off by current releases they saw as artlessly "updating" sublime disco by sampling, filtering, and subjugating them with huge kick drums -- the duo set out to discover how their favorite old 12" records were made. They naturally gravitated towards extended dubs of songs -- full of strange mistakes and echoing backing tracks -- instead of the better-known vocal versions. Lacking the big budgets and gear that made so many of their favorite classic records come together, they were forced to take a guerrilla approach. They reprogrammed their techno-oriented arsenal of secondhand synths and samplers, using novel digital recording technology to capture live instrumentation and prioritized mood over hooks, and the resulting music was just wrong enough to sound unlike anything else being released at the time. After just four underground 12" releases, the duo -- now well-known as Metro Area -- released their first and only album, Metro Area, in the fall of 2002. BROOM, MARK King EP 12"
Following One Sound/Myth EP (EPM 016EP, 2017), King EP is the second in a trilogy of EPs for EPM Music by Mark Broom. "King" is intensely addictive, with its tough, tracky groove, stomping bassline, and woven disco sample. "77" and "LX" continue the theme but with a deeper quality. The former is a dizzying number that could have come out of the windy city, but with a few touches of UK flavor, while the latter is a looped stomper, with a piano refrain and compact beats. Gary Beck offers a stripped-back remix of "King" that cuts away from the disco.

BREWSTER, BILL Tribal Rites 3CD
Tribal Rites is a musical autobiography of sorts from one of dance music's most dedicated historians, Bill Brewster. The compilation takes its listeners on a personal journey through Bill's 36-year long involvement in the music industry. Whether running DMC's New York offices or labels including Twisted UK and Forensic, being one of Fabric's original residents, or writing (with Frank Broughton) probably the definitive overview of DJ culture, Bill's fingerprints can be found all over dance music's past few decades. Tribal Rites isn't just a "House & Disco Greatest Hits", it's the soundtrack to a life spent at the coalface of record collecting, of early mornings at car boot sales, and late nights logged onto Discogs. Split into three sections, the compilation begins in the post-punk period, and explores the influence of dub on bands like Urang Otan, General Strike, and The Raincoats. The second section takes you into that mish-mash of sounds and styles best described as "Balearic" where the likes of Bobbie Gentry and Final Edition can happily co-exist and a country and western cover of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" seems obvious. The final section showcases what a broad church house music is, accommodating the spiritual yearnings of Mother Tongue and the precision tooled productions of Basic Channel's Maurizio. Tribal Rites is a vital reminder that there's a lot more to DJing than downloading the latest Beatport chart and waving your hands in the air. Presented as a triple CD set (ESK 508743) or over two double LP sets (ESK 508718 and ESK 508719).Triple CD version features: Agape, Brent Dowe & The Gaytones, Apatchi Band, General Strike, Gaffa, Urang Otan, Surprize, Deborah & The Puerto Ricans, P!off?, The Raincoats, Ruts DC, Motion, Peter Accident, Reggae Clinic 65, Jeff Duff, Bobbie Gentry, Latin Breed, Banzai, Freddi & Henchi, Aax Donnell & Eric Malone, The General, Final Edition, Sweet Potato Pie, Little Reuben, General Crook, Bill Brewster, Curtis Green, Nashville Rhythm Section, Dooley Silverspoon,Floyd Beck, Ströer, Mother Tongue, B. McCarthy & Rasoul, Love From San Francisco, Larry Heard, Swayzak, Clifton King, Aural, Fabrice, Chicken Lips, Ivan Iacobucci, Swag, Maurizio, Silverlining, and Kate-Olivia Martinez.

DAST Haradon 12"
Etruria Beat's prodigy Dast is back with a four-track EP named Haradon. The main title starts with an energetic modular sound arpeggiated, joined by a magic groove. The remix from Kevin De Vries confirms his sound stated with "Eternity", released on Drumcode in 2016. The second original track "Ixor" is a maximum expression of the Roland 909 with a power house melody. The Pig & Dan remix is characterized by a voice that makes the track super hypnotic and explosive.

PASCOAL & GRUPO VICE VERSA, HERMETO Viajando Com O Som: (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) CD
Hermeto Pascoal is a true maestro and a cultural icon. He represents the highest level of musical evolution; as a multi-instrumentalist, a composer, and an arranger. Once described by Miles Davis as "the most impressive musician in the world", there is good reason (beyond his Gandalf-like appearance) why he is known as "O Bruxo" ("the Wizard"). For Far Out Recordings' 200th release, the label present a previously unreleased album by Hermeto Pascoal and his Grupo Vice Versa: Viajando Com O Som, the lost '76 Vice Versa Studio Sessions. Recorded in two days in 1976, at Rogério Duprat's Vice Versa Studios in São Paulo, the sessions featured Hermeto's go-to "Paulista" rhythm section: Zé Eduardo Nazario (drums), Zeca Assumpção (bass), and Lelo Nazario (electric piano), as well as saxophonists Mauro Senise, Raul Mascarenhas, and Nivaldo Ornelas, guitarist Toninho Horta, and vocalist Aleuda Chaves. Hermeto decided he would record with this particular group following a show at Teatro Bandeirantes, during which an almost spiritual musical connection amongst the group was realized. The performance lasted for hours, without any breaks, and Hermeto saw the potential for his compositions to reach a "higher level" as the music organically moved from structured compositions to "freer" improvisational works. In the studio, the sound engineer Renato Viola understood that things needed to happen quickly. Almost everything recorded on the first take ended up staying in the final mix. After the mixdown, Lelo Nazario would ask Renato to make him a copy of all the material. Supposedly, the master tape was lost, but Lelo kept his copy in his studio's archives, where it stayed for over forty years. With the tape rescued and restored, this release fills a void in time. Recorded at an especially experimental period in Hermeto's career, it's a compelling insight into the incredible efforts of this group, who created a unique musical language which would have a profound influence on countless artists to come. The 1970s are considered a golden age of Brazilian music, but it's often forgotten how desperately hard it was for artists to get their music past the military dictatorship's censorship efforts. Yet in 1976, despite the often musically radical nature of Hermeto Pascoal's compositions, he was typically productive. The release of Viajando Com O Som re-writes the already remarkable story of one of the world's most supernaturally talented musicians.

MALHEIROS, SABRINA Clareia Remixes 12"
Three major players from the now multi-generational broken-beat scene: Henry Wu, Dego (2000Black), and IG Culture have assembled for an irresistible bruk-samba trip. Brazilian rhythms have always been foundational influences on the broken-beat and future jazz movements, and this EP continues to explore these connections. The joyful samba-soul in the title track of Sabrina Malheiros's latest album (FARO 199CD/LP, 2017) features the bass and keys of Brazilian jazz-funk legends Azymuth, and is inspired by the quest for clarity. This EP beautifully ruptures the "clarity" in style, each crafting the breezy Brazilian beats into their own distinct brand of future-thinking club-funk.

FAVORY, JEAN-BAPTISTE Things Under: Organic Compositions for Guitars and Electronics LP
"Because we are heathens, we first heard about J-B Favory when we reissued Los Lichis' incredible 2LP set, Dog (FTR 229LP, 2016). Favory was the one non-Mexican member of the ensemble, traveling once a year (or so) to collude with the insane artists of Los Lichis. Had we been less dim, we would have known Favory was an avant composer of note, having served as an assistant to Luc Ferrari and Gavin Bryars, before setting off on his own musique concrete path. He is also the co-host of the longest-running experimental music radio show, Epsilonia (on the anarchist Radio Libertaire), and a guy whose recordings are well loved by fanciers of the avant. That said, Favory has never had a solo LP (despite a number of CDs), so when he sent us some of his new work, we jumped on it. Things Under is one of the most mesmerizing blends of guitar and electronics we've heard in years. Favory's approach to strings ranges from the idyllic to something very much like the Machine Guitars (1982) of Remko Scha. The way he collages these sounds into electronics is spectacular. Often, in similarly intended projects, there's a friction in the shift between guitar and electronics. The elements can feel like worlds apart. But not here. Like some of Manuel Göttsching's best solo recordings, the two sonic globes meet without colliding. Their molecules and atoms just slip into and through each other. It's a total gas. And often difficult to figure out whether a specific sonic event is generated by guitar or electronics. Been listening to this for days and it still sounds a great and mysterious as it did when I first threw it on. A stone keeper." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

CHIK WHITE Stranger Calls To Land: Cassette Selections 2010-2017 LP
"Over the past few years, we started hearing solo jaw harp cassettes by a Canadian musician who called himself Chik White. Some of them were straight-forward somewhat-folky blasts of righteousness, others used studio effects to emphasize the psychedelic qualities of the instrument (or so it seemed), and others were nature-based explorations of the jaw harp's drone possibilities. Heard individually they were striking, but listened to as a group, they went way beyond that. We got in touch with Chik (the soubriquet for Darcy Spidle when he's playing in this format) and suggested doing an LP that would provide a thorough overview of the work he's done thus far. He sent tapes of material that had been out previously, as well as a bunch of never-before-heard work, and we dove straight in. Stranger Calls To Land is the quite amazing result. The jaw harp is such an ancient, basic and humanistic instrument it has a strangely organic quality no matter how it's played. But many of Chik White's sessions take this essential element in extreme directions. This is particularly true for the two tracks we lifted from Raft Recordings From Economy (Notice Recordings MC, 2017), which was taped while floating on a homemade raft-cum-instrument in the Bay of Fundy. The sound, the concept, the whole gestalt of this project defy logic so utterly we've found it impossible to not be swept along by the waves, the wind and the weirdness of the entire process. While operating in Spidle mode, Darcy played in punk bands, ran the Divorce record label and founded the annual OBEY Convention up in Halifax. But we like to think his heart belongs to Chik White. There is, after all, something ineffable about a man and a jaw harp. If you don't agree after giving this LP a spin, we will eat a shoe. And that's not something we ever plan to do." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 250.

REBOOT Are You Loosing My Mind 12"
Reboot takes another slice from his recent album Alive (2015) out for a walk. This time it's "Are You Loosing My Mind". First we're treated to the vinyl version - a stripped down tech house beat sprinkled with a vocal hymn and plenty of groove. Then Ricardo Villalobos takes over with two distinct versions. With "Hauswiedermischung", Villalobos creates a kind of chaos in which the track lives without losing the groove. Ricardo's twenty-four minute "Loosing My Miles" remix is where he really loosens the grip on the track and lets it wander in and out of coherence.

Giant Records' tenth release is from New York born Adam Collins (Omni Am). "Day 2 Day" builds and snakes itself into a bottom bass-heavy house jam -- Chicago-style keys mold the snare and hats into an infectious workout. The next cut is from Carl Finlow as Random Factor. The track swells nicely with warm atmospheric pads and sprinkles of emotive keys, with an electro style hook. LA based producer Mieka Du Franx strips the original down to the bare essentials and gives it a tuff minimal feel. Echo Of Glory takes the track on an acid-tinged workout.

TRAORE, LOBI Rainy Season Blues CD
2010 release. Lobi Traoré (1961-2010) was a true African original, a guitarist of profound depth and originality, a singer and songwriter with universal appeal, and a performer who became part of the very fabric of Bamako, one of the world's most musical cities. Not long before he died -- suddenly and unexpectedly in June, 2010 -- Traoré recorded an unprecedented solo CD, featuring just him and his guitar, in a single session with no overdubs. Rainy Season Blues turns out to be Traoré's final statement. It captures the pure essence of his artistry in full flower. From his earliest days in Mali, Traoré was an avid rock and blues fan who listened to players from John Lee Hooker to AC/DC's Angus Young. In Bamako, Traoré held a lifelong tenure in the city's late-night bars and clubs -- Bar Bozo, Makelekele, The Djembe, Espace Academie, and others. When his first cassette, Bambara Blues, appeared in 1989, things began to take off. Traoré had mixed feelings about the "blues" tag. "I listened to a lot of blues," he said, "Especially John Lee Hooker. Maybe I was inspired by that. Maybe the blues was inspired by Africa. Maybe the resemblance is just a coincidence. But listen, for me the music I play comes from me, from my place." Traoré would go on to release three CDs with the Cobalt label: Bamako (1994), Segou (1996), and Duga (1999). But there was a schism in Traoré's musical persona during these years. His international releases presented a toned-down, acoustic side of his music, while his club dates in Bamako became ever more wild, raw, and raucous. Subsequent CD releases like The Lobi Traore Group (Honest Jon's, 2005) did capture the more unbridled, rocking side of Traoré's chameleon musical persona. But all of it is Traoré, an artist with many faces. He sought to dignify a profession that many Africans still view as dubious. The fruit of that attitude and Traoré's rich and varied experiences are abundantly evident on Rainy Season Blues. In his final years, Traoré was driven to record and to demonstrate how he had grown as a musician. Producer and guitarist Chris Eckman had returned to Bamako to record the Tuareg desert rock band Tamikrest, but Traoré more or less demanded a hearing. When it became clear that a full-band recording would not be possible right away, Traoré turned up with just his guitar, and recorded this remarkable set of ten songs, new and old. The session offers a magnificently lucid record of Traoré's core talent. His playing has never sounded cleaner, fresher, or more nuanced. No guitarist alive phrases the way Traoré does, and to hear him unaccompanied like this is a treat not found on any of his other nine albums. Traoré's voice shows all its colors, from a soothing half-whisper to a world-weary growl to keening melodicism.

BEN ZABO Ben Zabo CD
2012 release. The debut of Ben Zabo's Afrobeat band from Bamako, Mali, a work full of funky and gritty tunes, wonderful musicianship, and songs of peace and hope. Ben Zabo is a testament to the lesser-known culture of the Bwa people; it is the first international release of a Malian of Bo descendant with all songs in the Bo language and rhythms. Born into nobility in 1979 in the Segou region of Mali, Ben Zabo (real name Arouna Moussa Coulibaly) chose music as a career because of his passion but against the wishes of his parents, who wanted him to pursue a career as a pharmacist. Notes by producer Chris Eckman: "Much of the Malian music that has been released on European and American labels in the last few years shares one thing: it is mostly down-tempo and reflective. The kora majesty of Toumani Diabaté, the Songhi blues of the late Ali Farka Touré, the singer-songwriter tropes of Rokia Traoré and the dusted, acoustic meditations of Tinariwen (on their most recent album) are a demonstration of this point. Even the later albums of the once exuberant Salif Keita have grown more melancholy and ethereal. The music of Ben Zabo is a clear break from this quietude. His music is a string of firecrackers igniting on the dance floor of a midnight party. It is a music that has been perfected in the loud, sweaty, open-air clubs that line the outskirts of Bamako, places where the competition to get heard is fierce, and the chances of moving upward and outward are next to none. When I first came across Ben's music it seemed unlike any contemporary Malian music that I had heard. Its direct physicality, its polyrhythmic complexity and its raw but focused energy set it apart. But as I dug more into Mali's musical past, I realised there are antecedents for the music Ben and his band create. In the 70's and 80's, like in much of Africa, musicians in Mali were creating a powerful, and at times edgy musical fusion that brought together traditional rhythms and chants with the urban (and often western) sounds of the fast growing cities. . . . With the release of Ben Zabo's self-titled album an older tradition is renewed and an uncharted path begins."

MOTHER ENGINE Hangar CD
The third album of the German psychedelic/prog rock band Mother Engine is a real unique piece of music, which, on one hand, used to be a concept album to show the evolution of the "Mother Engine" in their fictive story of the spaceship of the same name and its crew, and on the other, as the evolution of the musicians themselves in songwriting and DIY recording and production processes to really get inside of the implementation of their imagination. The album Hangar was made in a very ornate and passionate process that took a lot of time and a lot of energy, but represents the sound and the intention really well. Since the band got a lot of reactions over their last two albums, that differed from "really good and clean sound", to "good, but live much better energy", they decided to take care of recordings themselves. The offer to record in a lovely place in the woods of our home region (Vogtland), with their good friend and experienced sound technician Marco Naumann (Colour Haze, My Sleeping Karma, Up in Smoke) came nearly at the same time as they decided to record the new material for their third album, so it seemed like some kind of fortune to fulfill.

NULL + VOID Cryosleep CD
After releasing records and touring with his synthesizer-driven Kap10Kurt outfit, the Swiss-born New Yorker focused on working in the studio with a long list of major acts like The Kills and Moby, while also writing several original songs together with Dave Gahan for the latest two Depeche Mode albums. But now Kurt Uenala re-emerges as a solo artist under the name Null + Void, with his debut full-length Cryosleep and displays the full range of his outstanding abilities. Swiss-born New York based Kurt Uenala first made his name in 2003, debuting as Kap10Kurt on the essential compilation The Sound Of Young New York (2003). His song "Die Sleeping" was an early classic of dreamy, club-ready synth pop, and it caught the attention of fans and artists around the world. It eventually landed him a gig recording with Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan, not to mention a long list of major acts such as Moby and The Kills. Cryosleep is an album of contrasts and tension, where darkness is pierced by blinding light, and where moody new wave bleeds into stark electronics. In one moment, joyful memories give way to isolation and regret, and in the next, Cryosleep explores the catharsis of crowded dancefloors. Throughout the record, Uenala matches his dynamic production with incredible vocalists -- from Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan and the inimitable Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum), to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Big Pink, and Sharin Foo (The Raveonettes). Null + Void's take on dark pop meshes with his love for Detroit electro, poignant synth melodies, and cold atmospheres. Includes three tracks available via the download code: "Blank Stare", "Where I Wait (feat. Dave Gahan) (Radio Edit)", and "Where I Wait (feat. Dave Gahan) (Aristokrasia Version)".

As such, the artwork for the album reflects that and was made by stitching both artists' faces together, creating one persona from two individuals. As DJs, the pair have played everywhere from Timewarp to Awakenings Festival. They also own their own club, Charles Bronson, in their native Halle, Germany, and have released remixes and original material on top labels like Kompakt, Minus, and John Digweed's Bedrock. The title of this impressive album reflects the journey the duo had throughout the writing process. It was one that took a long time and went from initially being about writing an album of listening music, to evolve into being much more about music for the club and for many different dancefloors. "From our perspective, when it comes to music, a very important parameter is authenticity," they say. "In our case it means we're playing dance music in clubs and at festivals the whole year round. And even though it would have been interesting to produce a 'listening album' it wasn't the right time for that; which is why ultimately we chose to produce a club album. After all, the club has always been the space that has shaped us the most. It's a space that enables us to develop, test, and improve our music on a constant basis!" The album kicks off with squelchy synths and intoxicating vocal coos before getting deeper and more stripped back, with a moody atmosphere pervading the supple grooves. Things get more melodic and subtly uplifting as the album progresses and tracks range from spooky to emotive to scintillating, with original ethereal vocals making a number of appearances. Each track offers something different in terms of mood and style, yet the whole album plays out like a perfect journey with all the necessary highs and lows required. At the same time, the pair's exquisite synth work and knack for well programmed drums always shine through and prove they are slicker than average studio wizards.

VON OSWALD & ORDO SAKHNA, MORITZ Moritz Von Oswald & Ordo Sakhna CD
A kind of intimate scrapbook of the startling collaboration between the techno maestro Moritz Von Oswald, and this long-standing musical collective based in Bishkek devoted to the roots music of Kyrgyzstan, Ordo Sakhna. Loose-leaved but balanced, lucid, and intimate, it sets out from stunning a cappella and virtuosic komuz and kylak, mouth harp and traditional percussion: not field, but expert studio recordings, using marvelous vintage microphones, made over several days in Berlin. Further, a few of these are deftly treated by Moritz, using Reichian de-synced double-tracking, and discreet effects. Also includes two ten-minute dubs: a deadly, signature Berlin steppers, plus its version; and an echoing, mystical drum session, recorded live on stage in Bishkek. CYCLIST, THE Sapa Inca Delirium 2LP
Having offered a taster of things to come back in September 2016 with the Pressing Matters single (HYPE 054EP), The Cyclist returns to Hypercolour with a brand new, full-length album, Sapa Inca Delirium. And as the title suggests, Sapa Inca Delirium leans heavily on South American mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that the eleven-track album paints so well across its various tempos and rhythms. From the tropical burst of mood setting opener, "Go Back" to the steamy and pacey percussive flow of "Inhale/Exhale", which features regular collaborator Tanaya Harper on vocals, The Cyclist's fourth long-player is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. "Antiexist", with its down-tempo rolling snare fills and ethereal Gregorian chanting segues effortlessly into "A Blind Girl Drinks Ayawaska", a suitably discordant and hallucinogenic skit that ensures the album flows into the more rhythmic cuts like "Skateboarding In The Jungle" and "Mirrors" (the second album cut to feature Harper on vocals). Even the traditional jazzier vibes of "When We All Break Down" featuring Joni are kept rugged and boisterous, with heavyweight bending bass, choppy breakbeats, and FX'd ambience amongst the smooth jazzy chords and sweet vocal delivery. Sapa Inca Delirium is one of those albums that will reward on repeat listen, such is the diversity of style on show here, and the detailed and wide-eyed curiosity offered up across the long player's fifty three minutes. Double LP comes in a full picture, spined jacket on reverse board; Includes download code.

PHARAOHS In Oeland LP
From their base in Los Angeles, intrepid musical voyagers Pharaohs have imagined a place far from the city for their first stand-alone release on International Feel. "While we were working on this record I was reading a book Crossings by surfer journalist Michael Kew," says Pharaohs co-founder Sam Cooper. "A lot of the music was inspired by his travels in the South Pacific, his imagery, the way he talked about places and how there were still undiscovered places in the world. I was immersing myself in this tropical island world. I guess this is my idea of what I'd want to hear if I was out there." Filled with irregular rhythms played on peculiar percussion, with shades of Eno's work with Jon Hassell, guitar lines and muted saxophone drift in and out of focus, while exotic sounding synthesizers carry much of the melody. Sam met fellow Pharaohs co-founder Ale Cohen in Amoeba Music and the pair, who each play guitar and synth, started jamming in 2007/08. Two more members were added. Diego Herrera, who also records as Suzanne Kraft, was an original member and although his relocation now prevents him from joining the regular jams, some of his playing can be heard on this album, notably its first track "Muddy Middle Of Nowhere". Fourth member, Casey Butler, aka Stellar Rahim, studied composition at CalArts where his mentor and teacher was renowned avant-garde and free jazz trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith. He is also a member of the CalArts Gamelan Orchestra. Originally conceived by Test Pressing's Paul Byrne, International Feel's mini-album series has established itself in a space somewhere between worldbeat, Balearic, and library music. Following releases in the series by Len Leise (IFEEL 049LP, 2015), CFCF (IFEEL 051LP, 2016), Shelter (IFEEL 061LP, 2017), Wolf Muller & Cass (IFEEL 054LP, 2016), In Oeland offers a mature and heady mix of diverse influences that displays the furthest extents of Pharaohs' musical adventuring to date. Sit back, listen and join them for the ride. In Oeland is the fifth release in International Feel's mini-album series. 180 gram vinyl.

VA Rude Boy Scorchers CD
The rude boy moniker has its roots firmly set in the downtown districts of Kingston, Jamaica. Alongside the regular ska/rocksteady sounds coming out of the sound systems, there was an undercurrent theme to some songs that spoke of the struggles of the youth, of their confrontation, arrests, and run-ins with the establishment. Some of these songs praised the rude boys for their stance and style while other songs were more in contempt with the rude boys' attitudes, comings, goings, and violent behavior. For this release, Kingston Sounds have put together a set of tunes that the Jamaican rude boys would have been listening to at the sound systems on the lawns and street corners. The compilation not only includes the more obvious rude boy tunes like "Gunmen Coming To Town", "Dreader Than Dread", and "Moon Hop", but also some of the tunes that made the sound systems rock well into the night. Features Derrick Morgan, Lloydie & The Lovebites, Phyllis Wilson, Delroy Wilson, Rico Rodriguez, Honey Boy Martin, The Heptones, Justin Hinds, Lester Sterling, John Holt, The Ethiopians, and Pat Kelly. CD version includes four bonus tracks featuring Lester Sterling, Derrick Morgan, Roy Shirley, and Slim Smith.

NOCTURNAL EMISSIONS Nocturnal Emissions CD
Led by Nigel Ayers, Nocturnal Emissions was one of the first bands to use tape cutting, avant-garde art, and underground video works to create a stage experience that was cultivated by like-minded artists like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The band moved on to using samplers and electronic noise in their early '80s work, creating a twisted funk sound that would go on to influence everyone from Foetus to Negativland. They still utilized their former tricks, upping the ante with extremist performance art and more professional video displays. The group avoided signing to a major label, instead focusing on releasing their own music more effectively. They followed this path into the '90s when they started www.earthlydelights.co.uk, an incredibly detailed website that promotes their various ideologies -- they are strongly against the British monarchy and believe that citizens should have unlimited access to space travel -- and constant release schedule. The band has released countless tapes and CDs of their material, and continues to unleash their noise through their website. Nocturnal Emissions is a compilation of classic tracks from the early to mid '80s. Track selection by Alessandro Adriani. Graphic artwork by Simon Crab. Audio mastering by Rude 66.

BAILEY, MARCO Temper CD
By maintaining a consistently high-quality output that does not merely ride the wave of current trends, multi-faceted producer Marco Bailey has managed to survive through decades of mercilessly shifting adjustments to popular taste in dance music. From his beginnings in the late '80s spinning eclectic sets comprised of everything from punk to old school hip-hop, to his present interest in pure unadulterated techno, the Belgium-based DJ and producer has won over audiences with his keen knowledge of how to squeeze the greatest physical and emotional impact out of a few well-placed elements, along with his instinct for seeking out the most innovative and resilient kindred spirits. These combined talents have led to his formation of several different labels: MB Electronics in 2001, the "limited edition" label MBR in 2013, and lastly the new Materia label, which started in 2016. His similarly named event series, Materia, has also been a truly worldwide "state of the art" summit for advanced techno artists. This full-length by Marco Bailey, stretches back to his mid-90s period as a trance producer, with gracefully arcing and anthemic affairs composed of individual tracks that follow that same blueprint. Temper marks his fifth full-length album overall, and Bailey claims it to be the best overall representation of his sound. With seventeen tracks comprising almost an hour-and-a-half of music, he has ample room to stretch out and to give listeners an excellent portable version of his potent live show. Of course, an epic running time alone is not the marker of a great audio experience, but an epic running time in which one loses track of time completely is -- Bailey accomplishes this feat by never rushing the payoff; by organically building up each track until listeners are fully immersed in his alternate universe. This skill can be heard on banging, sweat-saturated tracks like "Ash", "Genetix", and "Hasai," but also on comparatively gentle pieces like "Klauth" (which straddles the line between disciplined electro and something more dreamlike and weightless), or the blissed-out "Suoh", which feels like a fresh snowfall in audio form. Low-key cuts like "Rex", driven by echo FX and other windswept sounds, form natural counterparts to busier tracks like "Ruth", with its spring-loaded sequencer attacks, or "Reboot That Device", which is ingeniously driven by a psychedelic organ. Minimalist vocals are occasionally injected into the mix -- "The Darkness" -- to impart a subtle message of constant, ongoing expansion. "In The Darkness" features Tim Baker.

'At that time I was trying to learn as a big band jazz drummer, and when I met Don Cherry, I said, forget it. We played another kind of music. Indian music, Turkish music, Bulgarian, Chinese, you know... All kinds of music.' 'Every musician,' Dyani said later, 'should realize and acknowledge that folk music is the backbone of every music.' IN TIME Inside Your Mind LP
Homespun psych-punk-garage-pop from 1985. Over a decade ago, Steve Krakow, aka Plastic Crimewave, found a cassette by a mysterious '80s band called In Time at a Chicago thrift shop. When he returned home and listened to it, he was amazed: "I had flashes of the TV Personalities (one of my fave 'DIY; bands), early 'paisley underground' like Three O'Clock (maybe when they were the Salvation Army), wobbly but illuminated '60s folk-garage like Faine Jade, and even first wave UK punk like Subway Sect or yes, thee Pistols. There were even jagged post-punk moves ala the Swell Maps or Scrotum Poles, outrageous phasing, trumpet, and something lacking so deeply in bands today... PERSONALITY." Obsessed with it, Steve tracked down one of the band members in Pennsylvania and found out that there was more unreleased stuff. So here's the first ever In Time vinyl LP, including most of the songs from their ultra-rare cassette plus previously unreleased tracks. Like Steve says: "self-depreciating jangle-pop, furious power-chorded decrees, full-tilt psychedelia, experimental texture pieces--and actual tunes that will burrow into one's skull for weeks." This is Gajek. This is 17. Come in, feel free. Don't worry if you see a flute in the sink. Matti Gajek's follow-up to his 2014 debut album Restless Shapes (MONKEY 053CD/LP) opens the floodgates to signals from a future best navigated by ear. Moving through polyphonic pulses, layers of grooves and sounds, zooming in-and-out of ever evolving patterns of concentration and decomposition, the ten tracks of Gajek's 17 are electrifyingly futuristic club music true to the almost five decades old motto of Berlin's Zodiak Free Arts Lab: Total freie Musik ("totally free music"). Paying tribute to electronic pioneers like Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Florian Fricke while staying clear of historical mystification, Gajek revisits the abstract clarity and improvisational audacity of 1970s electronics from a perspective firmly rooted in the digital now -- this is not '71. Today motoric rhythms emerge and elapse from post-digital aural 'scapes, intense and sublime, linking the thermodynamic to the ephemeral. Beyond the echoes of past utopias, 17 discovers present signs for possible tomorrows.

SOFA SURFERS 20 CD
The celebration of 20 years of Sofa Surfers presents a selection of new songs and fresh connections, with old companions for all crucial reworks including features by Dälek, Oddateee, Jeb Loy Nicols, and Junior Delgado. In 1997, Transit kicked off a musical journey for the Sofa Surfers that has brought them to the wildest corners of the audio galaxy. Outside, in the year 1997, Dolly the clone sheep and Hale-Bopp the comet were causing an uproar. Meanwhile, the band were tucked away in the studio, tinkering on their very own vision of a dark, cinematic groove. With resounding success: Dorfmeister's remix of the song "Sofa Rockers" catapulted the troupe onto the playlists of a host of international DJs in a flash. And that was just the beginning. Release parties, tours, and remixes were to follow, not to mention numerous movie soundtracks. Large festivals and countless clubs were played in over 25 countries. A retrospective? Not really. Now, the band lean back, open a bottle of champagne, and let a thousand past stories and experiences flow by. 20 years of band history -- now that's a reason to celebrate. But the Sofa Surfers want something more than just a celebration for their anniversary. Instead of a simple "Best of", they've cooked up a very special idea. One could see 20 as a rework and a step forward. A lot has changed; the music business also has different rules than 20 years ago. There are enough reasons for the Sofa Surfers to freshen up the connections with their old companions and deliver a musical oeuvre with a sharp eye for the present and the future. It's not like the songs on 20 weren't still clearly the Sofa Surfers. These new versions, however, are definitely different -- and their various collaborators over the last decades even came together to completely re-record their charismatic vocals. Tighter, without compromise, and crisp are attributes that spontaneously come to mind. In addition to classics and reworks, there are also totally new songs, leading the way in previously unsuspected directions. 20 is clearly not just for diehard fans and companions, it will also captivate new listeners. Features Oddateee, Junior Delgado, Dälek & Dev1, Issi Honi, MC Santana & Rox, and Jeb Loy Nichols. Artwork by transmedia artist Brigitte Kowanz. CD version comes in a digipak.

SEQUOYAH TIGER Parabolabandit CD
Sequoyah Tiger is the brainchild of Leila Gharib, songwriter and singer with a constantly shapeshifting voice from Verona, Italy. Following 2016's Ta-Ta-Ta-Time EP (MORR 144EP), Sequoyah Tiger's debut album Parabolabandit expands Leila's distinct musical language, dragging her listeners deep into her dark, twisted, and sparkling fantasy. While exploring the limits and hubs of pop traditions, weird sound studies, and vocal experiments, she comes up with bewilderingly beautiful songs in which vintage rock n' roll and present-day avant pop happily clash with electronic and acoustic elements, jagged beats and subtle rhythms, otherworldly shouts and confessional words. "Parabolabandit is a graft between two words that emerged during the writing process of the songs", she explains. "Inside this imaginary word I found roots, trunk and leaves of the entire album." The concepts triggered by this neologism inspired not only new music, but also videos, artworks, and future live performances, for which Leila will share the stage with dancer Sonia Brunelli. Since Leila has always been involved with collaborative projects like the performance art duo Barokthegreat or the indie rock outfit Bikini The Cat, Parabolabandit presented a chance to handle the whole process on her own, from writing to mixing. The album was recorded in Leila's basement studio "Vampa Club", where she follows a kind of trial-and-error approach, discovering new possibilities by solving problems. Every input is welcome: acoustic drums mixed with drum machines, processed guitars and synthesizers, field recordings and animal calls. But "singing is the main point and the cause for this project", Leila stresses. From the intimate crooning of album opener "Another World Around Me" to the Chipmunk outro of "Brilliant One", Leila passes through a wide array of vocal effects, tuning her voice to the mood of the songs. Although she shut out external influences, you can still hear echoing Joe Meek. The harmonies of The Everly Brothers shine through in songs like "Sissi", and "Where Am I?" has the sentimental air of a Ronettes classic. Still, you get dragged into the present again and again: The synth arpeggios of "Punta Otok" confirm that Leila shares the DIY-pop attitude of Visions-era Grimes (2011), while "Brother Brother" inhabits the same weird world as Panda Bear. From beginning to end, Parabolabandit is a unique and sincere sketch of modern pop music, full of enthusiasm and inventiveness. "Brother/Brother" features Black Fanfare.

On the remixes are Barcelona's Marc Piñol and Ulrich Schnauss. Ulrich's remix reimagines the beats in an early '90s lo-fi shoegaze version of the opening track, while Marc's remix is a floor magical journey covered by bright vocals and rich atmosphere.

TSA Home Of The Green Wave LP
Obscure record, unknown supply chain. David Tibet/C93 is a big fan and has referenced Simon Finn's Pass The Distance as a comparison. Described by a blogger on the internet as:"A voice that will send a chill down your spine, music that will put you instantly under its spell, lyrics that are by turns cryptic, religious, personal, humorous, disturbing and pleading. Since the late 1990s a mysterious artist has been quietly releasing some of the greatest works of modern downer-folk-psych under a variety of assumed names..." --http://rojvi.blogspot.com"We are very pleased to share this recent private press out of Chicago by a shadowy figure who has been working anonymously for damn near two decades. His records trace the outline of a truth never fully revealed. Past releases include Terry Rojvi, Jim Collins Music Performed by the High Mass, Tommy Roundtree Jungle Blood and many equally mysterious LPs, 45s and lathe cuts. Much more detailed info and complete discography on the fansite Rabbit Run Down the Hole of a Skull. Due to the artist's bizarre distribution methods (packages with no return address, Goodwill dumps, etc), copies of previous titles have changed hands right off the bat for over $100, but we have managed to unearth enough of this new one to let them loose for non-collector prices."

The rhythm track is tight yet remains loose and funky, while the pads and synths dip into just the right amount of acid. "The Teaze" treads similar ground -- arpeggiated pulses lead the arrangement, while a Chicago-influenced groove brings a shuffle to proceedings -- the joy in the track is evident.

MITTOO, JACKIE The Keyboard King LP
Repressed; LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Jackie Mittoo's The Keyboard King, originally released in 1976. Jackie Mittoo's contribution to reggae music is immeasurable. Of mixed Indian and African-Jamaican heritage, the man born Donat Roy Mittoo was a gifted musician that played piano in The Skatalites at the age of 16. He was a very important part of reggae's evolution, having been a crucial member of the Studio One house band from its very foundation, being employed as the main keyboardist and musical arranger for an extended period, working closely there with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and countless other important figures, as well as relegating Leroy Sibbles to the bass. Although Mittoo migrated to Canada in the late 1960s, he frequently returned to Jamaica to record, maintaining his Studio One connection, and also issuing a sublime series of albums for Bunny Lee in the mid-1970s. The Keyboard King was first issued on Third World in 1976, and features Mr. Mittoo's delightful organ workouts, completely reconfiguring hits by John Holt, Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell, and Bunny & Skully, among others.

BROWN, BARRY Step It Up Youthman LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Barry Brown's Step It Up Youthman, originally released in 1979. Roots reggae vocalist Barry Brown had a very distinctive singing style. His most obvious role model was the fragile tenor of Horace Andy, but Brown gave his delivery further distinctiveness with a range of wordless slurs, some of which were doubtless inspired by the creatures of the animal kingdom. As with his friend and fellow west Kingston resident, Johnny Clarke, Brown got his start in the many talent shows that were regularly held in the downtown Kingston area, and also got early experience on west Kingston sound systems such as Tape Tone, which gave rise to Barrington Levy, Triston Palmer, Sammy Dread, and Rod Taylor among others; Taylor and Brown even had a short-lived duo called The Aliens for a time. Such was his widespread popularity that several different producers all claimed to have been the first to capture his voice on tape, but it is undeniable that Bunny Lee was the first to bring Brown to prominence through the outstanding 1978 hit, "Step It Up Youthman", an optimistic meditation on the merits of self-determination, which led to this popular debut album of the same name; as with Johnny Clarke's 1975 album Enter Into His Gates With Praise (RR 318CD/LP), Step It Up Youthman mixed hard-hitting songs of Rastafari devotion with well-executed cover tunes.

BELIEF DEFECT Decadent Yet Depraved CD
Decadent Yet Depraved, the debut album by Belief Defect, finds shelter and complicity in Raster as a home and label. Familiar with the underground music scene and how its skeptical nature can also be an obstacle to overcome, Belief Defect abandon any claim or credit in an attempt to transcend the limits authorship imposes, avoid the boundaries, or expectations, earned or self-imposed, and find the clearest, most direct path to their music for themselves and the listener. At the core of the album is the music that inspired them, the conclusion of countless recordings listened to in their formative years that ultimately result in a life-long devotion to electronic music: from dancefloor to primal anger and self-annihilating noise, to transcendental, ambient escapism, and intense self-reflexive sonic layering. The result is a soundtrack for this apocalyptic time, an uncompromising reflection on the state of mankind and its uncertain future -- underscored by a sense of religious and secular demise referenced in track titles, samples, and soundscapes scattered throughout the album. Yet, more than a political statement Decadent Yet Depraved is an introspective journey, turning each listener into a spiritual soul-seeker staring into the abyss, reaching for some kind of cathartic truthfulness. Sculpture, prosthetics, and photography by Sarah Sitken.

MARIAM THE BELIEVER Love Everything CD
In addition to her solo work as Mariam The Believer, Mariam Wallentin is one half of vocal-and-drum-duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums with husband Andreas Werliin. She is also a founding member and composer in Fire! Orchestra. The follow up to 2013's debut album - the critically acclaimed 'Blood Donation' released on Moshi Moshi ? 'Love Everything' is written, produced and self-released on Mariam Wallentin's own label Repeat Until Death.. Equipped with her courageously uncompromising approach to music-making Wallentin started Mariam the Believer to focus her expression into a pop project. In total 15 musicians collaborated on the album, resulting in songs that twist and turn evolving organically with each contribution. From vocalist virtuoso Sofia Jernberg to drone experimentalist Oren Ambarchi and free form jazz star Mats Gustavsson, it's an eclectic roll call, yet despite that Love Everything is at its very core, a collection of pure pop melodies. On 'Love Everything', she lets melodies lead the way ? the piano flowing with harmonies that emphasise Wallentin's powerful and at times raw, honest voice. The songs are ripe, ready to be eaten, before metamorphosing into new structures and an unexpected richness. Power ballads are interrupted by a change of rhythms. En-chanting vocals turn into pulsating R'n'B, new opportunities are lurking behind every corner. In Wallentin's lyricism, the heart is a muscle pumping blood. Approaching spiritual subjects rooted in the human body and nature, she pulls esoteric themes into a con-text and reaches dizzying heights.

KINK Playground CD
Say what you wanna say, but you have to give Strahil Velchev this: the man's a powerhouse. Recording and playing live under the KiNK alias, he went on to become one of finest purveyors of funk in techno and house. What it is, by definition, ain't exactly clear. And that is the beauty of it. KiNK's music is unifying in the best possible way. Channeling the spirit and feeling of a time where it didn't really matter who the faces behind the music were, KiNK plays with the elements of genres and sub-genres as if the future of it all is still wide-open. At the same time it could be accused of retro-fetishism, as much as the Pope himself is infallible. The pure need to recreate moments, feelings, and experience -- rather than carbon copies of existing designs -- was what started KiNK's production work. Hailing from Bulgaria, it was nearly impossible to get your hands on all the records and music that fed into a system of raves, clubs, and record shops that seemed far away from Sofia, and financially it might as well have meant another galaxy. Wanting to DJ without having access to the tracks that spun the carousel meant that you had to create them yourselves. So, here we go with a private bootlegger gone public mastermind and one of the loudest voices in house, techno, and beyond. From KiNK's early productions with Neville Watson to his smash-hit for Ovum, a cerebral album for Macro Recordings (MACROM 038CD/LP, 2014), tons of remixes and tracks and his mind-bending live act, Playground seems to take all that into a blender. Simultaneously a sound-summary, the harvest of a field of ideas, and the exhibition of an artist in his prime, it also works as a sort of KiNK dictionary: avant-garde soundscapes stand next to boisterous bangers, classic club tracks and peak time emotions find their idiosyncratic and contemplative counterparts -- all of it coming down like a torrent in a drought.

VA 10 Years Of SCI+TEC 3LP
A decade deep into its ongoing investigations, documenting and pushing the sonic frisson and fusion between science and technology, SCI+TEC remain at the very forefront of electronic music. Its feet firmly on the dancefloor, its spirit deep inside the machines, its sights set on the future: Dubfire's label has continuously forged its own deep furrow and has been doing so from day one. With breakthrough Dubfire releases such as Roadkill (2007) and I Feel Speed (2007), SCI+TEC has managed to create a whole new framework for 21st century techno. All the while SCI+TEC has consistently championed and encouraged new and unsung talent from around the world, amplifying legions of rising names; Davide Squillace, Paul Ritch, SHADED, Simi, Delete, Harvard Bass, Joop Junior, and countless more include SCI+TEC releases in their rich histories. This precision balance of stark sonic signature, technical ideology, and nurturing new ideas and talent has led to SCI+TEC's perpetual momentum into every house and techno DJ's playlists and sets for the last ten years. Be it the label's penchant for deep, undulating subby grooves or its passion for warehouse-razing thunder-powered techno, the SCI+TEC sound covers every corner of the floor and every chapter of the night; as proved by the label's many world tours. And proved once again by this fittingly stacked anniversary album. Ten tracks to celebrate ten years from ten of the label's most exciting artists, every track brings home the SCI+TEC message: The breath-taking atmospheres of Alex Mine's album scene-setter "In The Name Of What"; Wigbert's detailed drum momentum on "Multiclock"; the soulful allure of Carlo Lio's "Because Of You"; the hazy slow-burning groove smolders of Hector & David Gtronic's "Saki"; Raul Facio's subversion of Dubfire's early rising turbine tension on "Malo"; the eerie juxtaposition of acidic icicles and groaning elephantine bass on Rosper's "Revenge"; SHADED's alien up-pitched funk on "Crayzy"; the soaring synths and cosmic undertones of Johnny Trika's "One Rainy Wish" and the pulverizing kickdrum funk of Mr. Bizz's "Blue Velvet"; not to mention the deep, hypnotic swing of Dubfire's restrained and dubbed-out house groove "Swerve". Each track an odyssey in itself, they complement and tessellate to reveal a much wider vision of the past, present, and, most importantly, the future. Consistently rooted but constantly rising; this album isn't celebrating the last ten years of SCI+TEC, it's setting you up for the next ten years to come.

DE BEREN GIEREN Dug Out Skyscrapers LP
In the space between expectation and surprise, you will find Dutch-Belgian acoustic-electronic piano trio De Beren Gieren ("The Bear Vultures"), providing robust evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass, and drums. Based on the compositions of pianist Fulco Ottervanger, the trio use the power of improvisation on the quest for a new form and create a multi-layered, kaleidoscopic work of art. De Beren Gieren has been hailed as one of the hottest acts on the Belgian jazz scene and Dug Out Skyscrapers marks the band's fourth studio album. Raw energy, impressionist melodies, and complex structures are generated via piano, bass, and drums provoking polyrhythmic soundscapes with unexpected twists and sudden turns. With Dug Out Skyscrapers, the trio trace back the essence of what characterizes their sound. An electro-acoustic approach weaves a spherical world of sound with added dynamism, humor, and more than a touch of melancholy, projecting its listeners forward into the future. De Beren Gieren hold the unique ability to change mood suddenly in a way that constantly holds the listener's attention. BRZZVLL Waiho LP
Belgian fusion band BRZZVLL (pronounced "Brazzaville") present their seventh studio album, Waiho. Founded by Vincent Brijs in Antwerp in 2006, the seven piece interfuse improvised dance music with jazz-fusion, Afro funk, and rare groove. It is freaky, it is trippy and it follows no rules. Belgium has quite a tradition for jazz and funk infused left-field grooves from Marc Moulin's ingenious Placebo, to library funksters Les Chakakas or El Chicles, to the much sampled JJ Band. BRZZVLL follows in a similar tradition. Initially re-working arrangements from jazz greats Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, Freddie Hubbard, and Archie Shepp, BRZZVLL eventually began to construct their own forms of free jazz in an attempt to return jazz to its primitive roots based around collective improvisation. Waiho is BRZZVLL at its best: excellent psychedelic jazz-funk in which the band's solid, characteristic sound comes forward. After two inspirational collaborations with poets and 'Nuff Said brothers Anthony Joseph ("Engines") and Amir Sulaiman ("First Let's Dance"), BRZZVLL play the instrumental card. With Waiho, the band express their current cry for solidarity within music as well as their daily lives. Nowadays, music is too often used as an individual consumption product. The band centralize the group experience, both in the creation process and in the interaction with the audience when performing live, by being "in the moment" and lifting the music to a higher level, as one. This way, BRZZVLL go back to the roots of jazz and funk. The non-native electronics and dub effects on the album encourage this heightened mood. The addition of a second drummer provokes an extra percussive layering and virtuosity. The compositions, inspired by surrealism, absurdism, and mysticism, still leave room for improvisation and the collective creation of sound. Get carried away by contagious rhythms and immerse yourself in this delirious trip to a world beyond ours. Picking up numerous plaudits for their contribution to jazz back in Belgium, the band have performed extensively in their home country and have shared the stage with the likes of The Neville Brothers, Young Blood Brass Band, Marcus Miller, and Alice Russell. Includes download card.

SAUVAGE, TOMOKO Musique Hydromantique CD
Musique Hydromantique is the second solo album by Tomoko Sauvage archiving many years of her performance-based practice on the waterbowls -- the natural synthesizer of her invention, composed with porcelain bowls filled with water and amplified via hydrophones (underwater microphones). While her first album Ombrophilia (2009) was studio-recorded/composed work, Musique Hydromantique is about experimentation and improvisation with the environment -- acoustics affected by the architecture, temperature, humidity, and the human presence. For more than ten years, Sauvage has been investigating the sound and visual properties of water in different states, as well as those of ceramics, combined with electronics. Water drops, waves, and bubbles are some of the elements she has been playing with to generate the fluid timbre. Since around 2010, hydrophonic feedback has been an obsession -- an acoustic phenomenon that requires fine tuning depending on the amount of water, a subtle volume control, and interaction with the acoustic space. "Calligraphy" was recorded in a genuine echo chamber, with about ten second reverbs, situated in a former textile factory. Like an endless exercise to draw perfect curves and forms floating in the air, the subaquatic feedback frequencies are pitch-bended with the mass of water sculpted by a hand changing its quantity. "Fortune Biscuit" is about the singing bubbles emitted from the pieces of "biscuit" (porous terra-cotta). Depending on the texture of the surface, each biscuit makes different sound. "Clepsydra" (meaning "water clock") features Sauvage's classical technique, a random percussion with dripping water. Sauvage tunes the waterbowls by adding and removing water, making flowing glissando, to find the balance point in ever-changing tonalities. Just as the flow of water is subject to a number of variables such as temperature and pressure, water clocks mark a time that is shifting and relative. However, slowness dominates throughout the album as a result of favoring the full resonance of the instrument. Hydromancy is a method of divination by means of water. Unpredictable bubbles and water ripples become oracles. Evaporation and acoustic space constantly play a chance operation. All the tracks were live-recorded without electronic effects or editing. Recorded during night or very early in the morning, and the whole album is to be listened to during that period of a day. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. CD version comes in a digipak; Edition of 1000.

Pushing his eighth year of releasing records, Andréasson has accomplished the task of creating a debut album that seems to tie together the sound of his previous EPs. Andréasson's sound is in line with a more outsider approach, but with a dancefloor focus, a sound that he has been pushing since the beginning. This approach shines through at the most on the tracks such as "Mc35I# Rushup", "Stay", and "Dreams" as these specific tracks shows Andréasson's more accomplished style. In between, the album keeps a perfect concept throughout. Taking breathers with its interludes and in general "shorter" tracks that hints of an ambient-leaning urge to express himself, he never loses focus. A masterful debut album from an artist to keep your eye on.

RAINCOATS, THE Extended Play 10"
"It seemed for a while in the wake of Pistols/Clash hysteria that post-punk Blighty might just change the face of popular culture. And no small thanks to some females who didn't care to be written off: The Slits, Kleenex and most enduringly, the Raincoats. Their brief career included a few LPs on Rough Trade, but the band fell prey to inner turmoil by the turn of the decade. That was way before their biggest fan, a semi-famous guy named Kurt Cobain began singing their story to every journalist in the land. Soon enough Steve Shelley was behind the drums in a revamped version of the band. With this new lineup, Extended Play came to be, a preface to their triumphant 1994 reunion album on the DGC label. Somehow, the Raincoats' old records have gotten better since they were made. Invited to open for Nirvana on their 1994 tour, the decade-gone Raincoats reformed, with original members Gina Birch (bass/vocals) and Ana da Silva (guitar/vocals) joined by new violinist Anne Wood and guest drummer Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Cobain's suicide ended those plans, but the band went on a triumphant American tour anyway. A John Peel session from April 1994 (two new songs, 'No One's Little Girl' from Moving and 'Shouting Out Loud' from Odyshape) was released on Shelley's label as Extended Play. The noisy avant-continental 'Don't Be Mean' (unveiled on the EP) take slipperier turns through the band's past.' --Douglas Wolk/Ira Robbins"

WORLD OF POOH The Land Of Thirst LP
"During their three-year existence in the mid-'80s 'San Francisco's World Of Pooh manifested all kinds of reverent beauty-moves ... interwoven with darker mutterings and visual clews that seemed designed to confound and obfuscate. It wasn't until much later that ... listeners ... would discover how bipolar the band's actual wobble was ... The music of World Of Pooh is some of the definitive American underground pop bastardization created in the latter half of the Twentieth century ... [M]aybe [the vocal and instrumental glisten] isn't quite as pleasant as you'd originally thought. Indeed, their whole gestalt is pretty goddamn twisted..., in such an empathetic and human way that it can't but help draw you in... Because their ending was as rife with public commotion as their birth had been with the private variety, it always seemed highly unlikely that the exquisitely balanced songs ... would ever reappear in graspable form. But time is a universal salve. And we should be glad of it. Because hearing this music, using ears that have been bored stupid by endless gushes of null-minded pap, it is possible, finally, perhaps, to appreciate the indelicate tension and unholy stylistic alliances that made World of Pooh so special..." --Byron Coley

Currently championed by a range of soundsystems and DJs from across the bass music spectrum, from Roots veterans Channel One Soundsystem and the legendary Jah Shaka Soundsystem, to UK steppers pioneers Iration Steppas and dubstep household names such as V.I.V.E.K, Caspa, and Rusko."As the son and nephew of pioneering UK nu roots dub duo Alpha & Omega -- bassist Christine Woodbridge and keyboard player John Sprosen -- Ben Alpha Steppa grew up surrounded by sound system and dubplate culture, starting in his mother's womb at Channel One and Jah Shaka shows. In his music the competing influences of nature and nurture cannot be separated. He has grown to become one of the most prolific and inventive dub producers around, absorbing worldwide inputs into his productions without dilution of their constituent parts, most notably with his recent Trigram series. On this set collaborating artists are from Russia, Senegal, Nigeria, Jamaica, Suriname and Brazil, but the true test of all reggae/dub productions is when they stand alone in the mix, here with the horn driven march of 'Concrete Meditation'. Alpha Steppa places himself in the same league as Aswad's 'Warrior Charge' and comes out proud." --Steve Barker, Wire Magazine

FRUSCIANTE, JOHN Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt 2LP
"Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt is the first solo record by John Frusciante. Between 1990 and 1992 the guitarist made a series of 4-track recordings, which at the time were not intended for commercial release. After leaving the band Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, Frusciante was encouraged by friends to release the material that he wrote in his spare time during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik sessions. Originally released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in 1994, Niandra LaDes is a mystifying work of tortured beauty. Frusciante plays various acoustic and electric guitars, experimenting with layers of vocals, piano and reverse tape effects. Channeling the ghosts of Syd Barrett and Skip Spence, his lyrics are at once utterly personal and willfully opaque. Frusciante's rapidfire, angular playing shows how key he was in the Chili Peppers' evolution away from their funk-rock roots. His cover of 'Big Takeover' perfectly deconstructs the Bad Brains original with laid-back tempo, twelve-string guitar and a fierce handle on melody. The album's second part -- thirteen untitled tracks that Frusciante defines as one complete piece, 'Usually Just A T-Shirt' -- contains several instrumentals featuring his signature guitar style. Sparse phrasing, delicate counterpoint and ethereal textures recall Neu/Harmonia's Michael Rother or The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly. On the front cover, Frusciante appears in 1920s drag -- a nod to Marcel Duchamp's alter-ego Rrose Sélavy -- which comes from Toni Oswald's film Desert in the Shape. This first-time vinyl release has been carefully remastered and approved by the artist. The double LP set is packaged with old style tip-on gatefold jacket and printed inner sleeves."

CARR, MARTIN New Shapes Of Life CD
Martin Carr on New Shapes Of Life: "New Shapes Of Life is the third album I've made under my own name and my second for Tapete Records. I had spent much of 2015 in my studio trying to write songs for pop stars, getting nowhere and feeling useless, when David Bowie died. I abandoned my writing and immersed myself in his records, films and biographies. I did nothing else for weeks. . . . I started completely from scratch, writing and recording, often at the same time, in my home studio in Cardiff. . . . Lyrics were written first, unusual for me, but because they were the driving force of the songs, they had to be right. I concentrated on what I wanted to say rather than trying to find rhymes and scansion. . . . There was no sonic template in mind, though I was listening to a lot of soul music -- Philly, Northern, Motown -- along with the Bowie stuff. I wanted to change the way I sang, I didn't really want to play anything, most of the music is stuff I sampled and fucked with and then played it back in on a keyboard. . . . I worked on ten songs but in the end, only finished eight before the spell was broken. . . . I became paranoid and anxious. I was talking to myself and waving my arms around until I finally broke down and told my family and called the doctor. . . . I tried going back to it but I could never find the same space. I then spent six months looking for someone to mix it. In the winter of 2017 I recorded a new single, 'Gold Lift,' inspired by the photograph of Donald Trump and Nigel Farage taken the day after the U.S. presidential election. I asked Greg Haver, a Cardiff producer and friend now living in New Zealand, to help me with the mix for that. He tidied it up, replaced my electronic drums with his own playing, and then sent it back over for Clint Murphy -- a New Zealander now living in the U.K. -- to do a proper mix. This worked out so well that I decided to follow the same process for New Shapes Of Life."

STREET SECTS Rat Jacket 12"
"'We all have a price tag, we all sell each other out.' In 2016 Street Sects arrived with the intensity and volume of a gunshot. Their debut album End Position was a merciless, post-industrial declaration of suicidal intent. Now, the Austin, TX duo returns with a 12-inch titled Rat Jacket. It is not exactly a follow-up; rather, it represents a brief step to the side, an intentional detour. Still maintaining their sample-based foundation, the songs here experiment with melody and organic instrumentation. The record deals with loyalty, trust, betrayal, paranoia, and the sadness and regret that comes with the acceptance of our own selfish nature. If End Position was a bullet to the head, then Rat Jacket is a knife in the back. Street Sects formed in 2013 after vocalist Leo Ashline emerged from the fog of a thirteen-year battle with addiction and began collaborating with friend and multi-instrumentalist Shaun Ringsmuth. Disgusted with life but eager for catharsis, the duo embraced the experimental attitude and disillusionment of early industrial music pioneers, eschewing traditional rock music instrumentation and arrangement in favor of modern sampling technology and harsh electronics. Together they released a series of singles and honed their fierce and confrontational live performance before releasing their debut on The Flenser."

ANTIGONE Ostinato 12"
After Time Enough At Last (TOKEN 068EP, 2016), Antigone returns with Ostinato. The record is thematically accurate, adhering to its title's suggestion. The tracks play with layering techniques, gradually building a spectrum of sound around their respective persistent motifs. Antigone shifts these insistent base elements, allowing them the foreground before masking within a blend of processed and organic-sounding details. "Ostinato 1" is mild and disconcerting with strings that seem unnatural in their high pitch. "Ostinato 2" is more traditionally dramatic, the space filled with keys that follow the theme, building to an ostentatious crescendo reminiscent of the roots of trance.

Darko Esser returns with two powerful, finely-crafted techno pieces on Eighth Trip, his first release since 2015. "Untitled #15" drives forward with sullen aggression; eerie morphing synths gaining strength and swaying atop aggravated deep-hitting drums, all constantly meandering in space and energy. "Untitled #16" is forged with less aggression, but just as much tension; a morose cowbell sounds, offset from a moody drum pattern that beats beneath an extra-terrestrial synth, creeping, and probing, throughout the whole piece. Altogether Eighth Trip is yet another rich-sounding release from a champion of the darker, deeper realms of techno.

INTERGALACTIC LOVERS Exhale LP
It's almost trite to point out that Intergalactic Lovers have been on a journey, but -- in literally every sense -- they have. The Belgian band have traveled a long way, departing the dilapidated former factory building they use as a base to release two crisply superb albums and play shows in every corner of Europe and beyond. Exhale, however, raises the bar once more. It's the sound of a band resolutely coming into their own. Clipped indie-rock in the vein of Interpol, The Cure, or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it's punchy and concise, yet also incredibly open. "Every album we've always moved up a step because as you're older you evolve and what happens in your world changes," explains singer Lara Chedraoui. "We're friends, we're family, and the farther you travel it inspires you to write different things as well." Recorded in two English studios -- The Chairworks in Leeds and Vale Studios in Worcestershire -- Exhale was steered by Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters, Patti Smith) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Florence & The Machine, Arcade Fire, Muse). "I was pretty intimidated at first," Lara explains. "Gil works with so many bands and we were this little band from Flanders trying to prove to him that we're even bigger than any name he's ever worked with." "The studio is one of the most confrontational places to be because you can hear every note and that can make you insecure in a way," Lara reveals. "We wanted more from this record." And they've certainly succeeded. Exhale sounds like PJ Harvey at her most seductive, and Feist at her most barbed. "Talk! Talk!" feels like Blondie's cynical cousin, "Ego Wars" is a rousing depiction of a faltering relationship, while "Fears" is an anthem that feels almost tailor-made for arenas. "Between The Lines" is a fantastic example of what to expect: barbed songwriting with a personal touch, it's everything Intergalactic Lovers have promised to do, condensed into three minutes of biting, emphatic, coruscating music. "It's what goes on in my head and it has to come out," explains Lara Chedraoui. "It's that or I beat up people. So I decided I'm going to write songs -- it's cathartic because it helps me get rid of anger or sorrow." Comes in gatefold sleeve with lyrics insert; Includes download card.
