All City Dublin close out 2017 with a four-track EP from producer Colm K. Inspired by a variety of styles and musical sources with one common thread throughout: samples. Two tracks for the dancefloor and two dusty reprises, most of the music found here is a collage of sounds that zig-zags from the soulful thump of "Seeing" to the laid back strain of "Summary".

KALKABA AND THE GOLDEN SOUNDS, HAMAD Hamad Kalkaba and The Golden Sounds 1974-1975 CD
Analog Africa on Hamad Kalkaba and His Golden Sounds 1974-1975: "I remember the day clearly. I was searching for treasures in a record shop in Yaoundé, the Capital city of Cameroon, when suddenly I came across a 7-inch record with a picture of a young man wearing a traditional hat and bearing the marks of several imposing vertical scars on the side of his face, carved when he was just a boy as a reminder of his heritage in the Musgum tribe of the northern part of the country. The record contained two songs -- 'Gandjal Kessoum' and 'Touflé' -- by an artist I had never heard of before named Hamad Kalkaba. Both cuts were raw classics of fuzzed-out bass, pin-sharp horns, built upon the unshakable foundation of Northern Cameroon's mightiest rhythm: the Gandjal. The shop owner finally said to me 'There is another single with a green cover of the same artist, if I am not mistaken'. Over the next six years I searched for that 'green cover' and finally found it in a record collection belonging to an old bar in Parakou in northern Benin. . . . These two records, plus a third simply named 'Nord Cameroon Rhythms' constitute the entire discography of Hamad Kalkaba. Neglected for decades by all but the most devoted collectors of Afro music, Hamad Kalkaba and the Golden Sounds at long last gathers together the body of work of one of Cameroon's forgotten geniuses. But unlike many musicians who emerged from nowhere, recorded a few singles and vanished again, Kalkaba hadn't disappeared. Far from it. He was a distinguished public figure, a retired Colonel in the army of Cameroon, and a former member of Cameroon's Olympic Selection Committee. When we tracked him down he was serving as president of the Confederation of African Athletics. And although Kalkaba's job kept him busy, and he seemed initially dismissive of the music he'd made as a young man, he turned out to be an enthusiastic ally in this project. He arranged interviews, helped fill in the blanks and, when we finally met him in Yaoundé in 2016, provided us with photographs, lyric sheets and notes." CD version comes in eight-panel tray; Includes liner notes and pictures.

HUDSON, KEITH Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood LP
2004 release, restocked. LP version. Originally released in 1974 on Mamba, Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood is the most hallowed of all those reggae albums which remain unavailable, and Keith Hudson's key achievement in a career launched when, as a fourteen-year-old, he recorded members of The Skatalites on his "Shades Of Hudson" rhythm. After a series of solid-gold productions for Ken Boothe, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, U-Roy and the rest, this album projects Hudson's removal from Jamaica to London and New York studios and transatlantic audiences, and inaugurates a sequence of albums -- classics like Pick A Dub, Brand, Playing It Cool, Playing It Right -- which show his troubled experimentalism better suited to the LP than the cardinal 7" reggae format. Anchored here by Santa Davis and George Fullwood from the Soul Syndicate -- alongside musicians like Augustus Pablo, Count Ossie and Leroy Sibbles -- Hudson's mood is tormented and dazed, as on titles like "Darkest Night," "My Nocturne" and "Testing My Faith," where he struggles for Black senses of commitment --political, existential, religious -- at its breaking point. Magnificently and deadly serious, hauntingly unique, unmissable and unforgettable.

REBOTINI, ARNAUD 120 Beats Per Minute (Original Soundtrack) LP
LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve. House music broke through in France in 1987, at the same time when AIDS arrived in the country with the first contamination peak in gay and drug addict circles. In 1989, the founders of advocacy group Act Up-Paris knew that the fight against AIDS and triumphant house music should be joined together. From 1992 to 1995, the period covered by Robin Campillo's 2017 film 120 battements par minute (120 Beats per Minute), house reached its most beautiful plateau though techno was also becoming dominant. 120 Beats per Minute, winner of the Grand Prix at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, captures a moment of coming together through clubbing, a moment when fears are forgotten in the dance with what Act Up called "the chosen family." Flooded with light, this is their activist sanctuary. Arnaud Rebotini, who composed the soundtrack of Campillo's 2013 film Eastern Boys, is a recognized DJ and composer. His soundtrack work is marked by his tasteful love for house and techno. With his score for 120 Beats per Minute, he accompanies and supports the images with a process marked by deep respect, including his remix of Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy." But this soundtrack is not nostalgic -- it's a modern look at what occurred a long time ago, with the same fascination for synthesizers of that era where the analog was so important. The soundtrack is what balances this film and what justifies such a conceptual title: 120 BPM, the natural rhythm of both house and the heart, the music that kept the people from losing hope.

BIOSPHERE Shenzhou 2CD
Biophon present a reissue of Biosphere's Shenzhou, originally released by Touch in 2002. This expanded reissue includes a bonus album The Samphire Tower. Paul Cooper, of Pitchfork, on the album: "Shenzhou, aside from being the name of the Chinese manned-spaceflight vehicles, means 'magic vessel', and I can't imagine a more apt description for Geir Jenssen's latest excursion into ambient deep listening. . . . Jenssen again relies on found sound as source material for Shenzhou, but this time, the found sound is old vinyl recordings of the orchestral works of French Impressionist composer and ambient precursor, Claude Debussy. Jenssen lifts fragments of these scratched records in a similar manner as he did for Cirque's 'Black Lamb Grey Falcon' and 'Iberia Eterea'. The ten tracks (out of the dozen on the album) that follow this model all begin as a barely audible hum, like a small electrical transformer, out of which the dust-dappled loops of Debussy's woodwind, brass, and strings emerge, condense, and fade out into pink noise rustles. Unlike Steve Reich's phase pieces or Brian Eno's Discreet Music, though, Jenssen doesn't set his loops against each other to produce juxtapositions and piquant dissonance; he uses them to describe imagined terrain, at first glance monotonously flat and barren, but on concentration, replete with minute detailing. The overall effect of these pieces is a sense of immensity. The orchestral loops sound distant, abandoned in a vast wilderness, and strenuously battling against Arctic winds. Jenssen sets the listener down in this wilderness as an aloof observer, a witness to the music's futile struggles against entropic forces. The two tracks not derived from Debussy share the same hypnotic aesthetic. The brief interlude 'Bose-Einstein Condension' is a loop of piano chords lolloping in search of coherence, while 'Gravity Assist' is a longer voyage into woofer-quaking low-frequency manipulation, bell-like drones, and contrails of subdued noise. I can't help but feel that these tracks fit awkwardly and break up the conceptual flow of the album. This, however, is a minor quibble given the power of this music. Shenzhou is unquestionably a magic vessel, but one that reveals its enchantment only to those who pay close attention."

TNC6 Sekundenschlaf LP
Sleep-deprived, breakbeat-driven vignettes of unclear authorship, from somewhere west of Lake Lagoda, near the Russia-Finland border. Sekundenschlaf has significant points of correspondence with contemporary European electronic music, as well as the golden age of (early) jungle and ambient techno. But its response to tradition, and to the zeitgeist, is idiosyncratic to say the least -- with an atmosphere and psycho-geography rooted in the tranquility and majesty of Western Russian nature, and the anxiety and distress of the country's post-Soviet working class. Pastoral calm meets dissonance and unease. The music has a loose, improvised feel, but its arrangements are intricate, its melodies iridescent; cascading arpeggios that stir a sense of optimism and renewal, sighing string-pads that evoke the deepest melancholy. Rhythms simultaneously hyped-up and burned-out, collapsing in on themselves as they race to destinations un-known. All bound together with field recordings of eavesdropped conversations, blurred into abstraction, a droning subliminal menace.

BLANCMANGE Unfurnished Rooms LP
LP version. Written and recorded by Neil Arthur and co-produced by Benge (Wrangler, John Foxx & The Maths, and Gazelle Twin co-producer). It's been a fantastically creative period for both of them; the duo released their debut album as a new electronic duo -- Fader's First Light (BLANC 009CD/LP), released in July 2017 -- followed immediately by the final sessions for Unfurnished Rooms. For the new Blancmange record, all the songs were written by Arthur while Benge added percussion and layers of analog synth, with the pair then mixing the record together in the latter's Memetune studios in Cornwall. "Don't Get Me Wrong" features John Grant on piano and backing vocals. "Listening to Blancmange obsessively. Probably the most underrated electronic act of all time." --Moby

MELVINS, THE Eggnog / Lice All 2LP
2017 repress. "This double-LP package combines two of the earliest releases from the often imitated but never duplicated Melvins. Formed in the early-'80s in the scenic wonderland known as Aberdeen, WA, the band took inspiration from Black Flag, Black Sabbath, Venom, Flipper, Stooges and other floggers of high-energy, low-velocity plod. Today, more than 30 years later, they might be more popular than ever. Slow and steady wins the race. Disc one is Eggnog, from 1991. Originally released as a 10-inch, Eggnog is a wild ride into the outer limits of Melvins-dom. The first side cuts loose with three quick blasts. 'Wispy' has the Lorax (Lori Temple Black) on bass and Dale Crover on drums, pounding one note in unison while Buzz Osborne bellows and whispers and turns his guitar on and off. 'Antitoxidote' is a rabid horse galloping off into the desert, with yet more stops and starts and feedback detonations. 'Hog Leg' sounds like a syphillitic Jimmy Swaggert trying to mimic Dio while being backed by a drunken ZZ Top cover band. Side Two features the side-long epic 'Charmicarmicat,' with seasick waves of guitar and slow-motion madness bringing communicable disease and poisonous jellyfish ashore, stinging and infecting the unsuspecting sunbathers before gently washing out to sea again. Disc two is Lice-All, from 1992, previously known as self-titled, and also previously known as something else we're all not gonna talk about, thank you very much. This was their last release before signing their Atlantic deal, and features the introduction of new bass player Joe Preston (previously of Earth, currently of Thrones). It's one long, slow, loud blob of drones, moans and fuzztones. The opening endless power chord shimmer influenced Sleep, Sunn O))), and countless other sludge metal drone freaks for years to come. The LPs have been remastered and are back in print on vinyl for the first time in 15 years. The new gatefold packaging includes never-before-seen vintage photos, as well as the original artwork and insert, all tidied up and ready to meet Mom and Dad. Free download is included."

NAPPY MUSIC MAN Soul-Pop-Disco-Funk-Calypso-Crossover From Trinidad // 1975-1981 CD
"It has been said that Richard 'Nappy' Mayers (1951-1993), the copiously gifted musician, composer, arranger, producer and singer began his earthly sojourn in an era inappropriate for the fullest exploitation of his creative potential. From his teenage years he exhibited an innate impulse to craft melodies that were distinctive and enticing yet reflecting his attraction to the dominant influences of the period particularly American, Jamaican and homeland Trinidad and Tobago. Charismatic and a natural leader, Nappy's enduring passion for creating, performing and producing singularly progressive music so fired initial band members comprising relatives and close friends, that their loyalty and willingness to co-create with him proved key to its extensive popularity. From teenaged music-makers styled 'The Tornadoes,' his group evolved through several personnel shifts into 'Embryo' to enjoy their most productive and successful phase from the early 70's to 1980 as a trailblazing recording and stage performance outfit. Nappy's ever-fertile mind originated a continuous stream of unique creations with lyrical content ranging from his 1975 premier release 'Cash In Calypso/Breakaway' through the 1977 all-time best seller Wanna Make Love To You with sultry frontline songstress Nadie La Fond, down to his bittersweet plea in 1991's Bring Back The Ole Time Days. After he was so unexpectedly taken from us in 1993, it was beyond doubt that Trinidad and Tobago and the world of popular music he too briefly inhabited had lost a phenomenal talent in Richard 'Nappy' Mayers. The main focus of this compilation is layed on Nappy's early recording years with his own band Embryo and on artist such like Nadie La Fond, Felix Ceasar or Colin Lucas." --Dave Elcock

VA Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk 1981 to 1988 2LP
Double LP version. "Following successful disco excavation from the Caribbean to South Africa, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul booked a first class ticket to Narita to bring you the latest release, Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk: 1981 to 1988. This compilation presents 12 of the most memorable and sought-after songs of the era recorded by female artists. The music is a reflection of the unbridled optimism, technological achievement, excess and exuberance of Bubble-era Japan. More than catchy melodies and funky baselines, these are reflections of a time when Japan was the center, and future of the world. The Bubble can be characterized as an endless, extravagant party where personal and corporate wealth soared through the explosion of real estate and stock prices. Scores of young Japanese men and women moved to cities in search of affluence, transforming them into neon wonderlands. Changes in morals, values and gender roles followed suit. Prosperity leads to indulgence, and the taste for nightlife, from flashy restaurants to glitzy discotheques, was unquenchable. A soundtrack to this new, lavish lifestyle was necessary and the latest sound, City Pop (urban pop music for those with urban lifestyles), epitomized these attitudes. While influenced by American R&B and boogie, elements of fusion, YMO style Technopop, and adult-oriented rock (AOR) are front and center. Sung primarily in Japanese (with a word or two of English sprinkled in), City Pop is Japanese music for Japanese people. Producers like Tatsuro Yamashita, Toshiki Kadomatsu, and Haruomi Hosono were quick to embrace the latest studio equipment and technology. Synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7, Roland Juno-60, ARP Quadra, Moog Polymoog and Oberheim OB-8, as well as drum machines like the Linndrum, were prevalent. Digital reverb was applied liberally. Compiled by Eli Cohen (Alliance Upholstery) and Deano Sounds (Cultures of Soul), Tokyo Nights includes tracks by Hitomi Tohyama, Junko Ohashi, Mizuki Koyama, Kaoru Akimoto, Aru Takamura, Mariko Tone, Rie Murakami, RA MU, Kikuchi Momoko and Yumi Seino. Each selection celebrates the unique traits and meticulous production that define the sound. Think sandy beaches and metropolitan skylines; illumination and romance. Embrace the feeling of movement, from a coastal highway stretching towards the horizon or the city sprawling into the future. Turn on the hi-fi and slip into these Tokyo Nights."

TRYAD If Only You Believe In Lovin' LP
Del Val Records present a reissue of Tryad's If Only You Believe In Lovin', originally released in 1971 as a private press. Ultra-deluxe LP reissue on the newly resurrected Del Val label -- obscure but legendary label previously responsible for early editions by The Brigade, The Bachs, Bent Wind, D.R. Hooker, Fifty Foot Hose, etc. Long overdue and much delayed reissue of this 1971 NYC private press few have heard and less have seen. Comparable to the best UK folk-fusion LPs of the era, this is like a Yankee version of Hunter Muskett's great Every Time You Move (1970) with co-ed vocals plus bass/drums/pedal steel/flute/keys accompaniment and East Coast haunted not West Coast hip, though you'll be reminded of a certain revered private from out there that wouldn't exist for another five years: Relatively Clean Rivers. Comes with a four page lyric insert and the cover is what they were made like fifty years ago."Low key but really cool. Hard to believe it's an NYC piece from '72 from a sonic aspect. There's a kind of innocence to overall heft that puts me in mind of very early Bay Area stuff, like the second We Five LP (1967). That same sort of psych-is-hanging-unnamed-in-the-background vibe. The only thing that really places it in the '70s is that pedal steel which has a definite post-Sneaky-Pete feel. Very cool." --Byron Coley

DADAWAH Peace And Love LP
LP version, 2017 repress. Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974. Led by Jamaican Rastafarian singing hand-drummer Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation drums and bass-heavy (with no rhythm guitar; rather, Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed blues). Lloyd Charmers and Federal Studios engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards. At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia. Previously squandered in an incongruous 2-for-1 reissue, now lovingly returned to its original, singular glory at Abbey Road. Pressed on super-fly vinyl and housed in new standard-printed sleeves.

In reflection of the many years of development of the DEMF/Movement festival since its inception coupled with the near 15-year anniversary of these releases (and the first live appearance of DeepChord at DEMF with Mike Schommer), Echospace announce the continuation of their archival edition. Many of these releases -- originally appearing on Octal Records -- took center stage on the walls of the dance room at Record Time (circa 2001) canned by Detroit legend, Mike Huckaby. This release will mark the fourth installment to the coveted series and returns to form with a stone cold classic from the DC Trax vault. The first time ever released on CD, lovingly remastered and assembled by Rod Modell. Great measures, focus, and time were spent to preserve the analog warmth and sonic integrity of the original masters. RADIUS Interpolation Tapes [Restoration One] CD
Hot off the heels of the beautiful Obsolete Machines LP (2017), Radius's cassette demo restoration project returns to form with the Interpolation Tapes series. The original source tapes had aged, warped, and degraded and as a result Echospace have preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed with a vintage Prophet 2000 sampler, Studio 440, and various Linn samplers to add depth and range to the original source material. Echospace have spent nearly an entire year restoring and interpolating over 100 hours of music, processing sound and redesigning the blueprints of this long forgotten project. Every track was originally recorded down to an old Tascam 688, an 8-track cassette recorder that still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards, purchased and abused since 1992. Nearly every component has been replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life. It's been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and re-arranging these masters, regardless of the time passed, there's so much depth in sound design, raw emotions and when considering the limitations of hardware in the era these were recorded, they've truly aged like a fine wine... There's undeniably something in the air, a mystifying energy, long may it live on... Comes in a sleeve with retro matte UV finish.

The world outside resonates metallic. Its activity humming calm harmonics. You are the stasis. Liquefied. Receiving alien signals. Unseen universes translated into sound. Notes bend like light reflected in a curved, hard surface. Muscles form and tie. Limbs from this soup. Pain is not the word for it. This flux. Detach from your body. Listen to it bubble and evolve. Guess your shape. Serene. Yet you'll grow impatient. Anxious to be free as the world vibrates. You have your life to be getting on with after all. How long have you been in here? What will you find when you emerge? Celebrations? Or stamped on like a roach? Will you be wonderful with color and wingspan? Dancing for a mate. You wonder as you wait and change. Change and wait. Would you be content on a diet of dirt? It goes like this. Your thoughts in circles. Dream chasing worry. Worry chasing dream. Waiting to be reborn. Maybe You'll soar. Riding warm swells on summer days. Or will you dwell in the dark? No use for eyes. Only smell. Tasting the air for a sense of direction. Will you find yourself one of a hive? Or will you remain alone? Expanding to crack this shell. Forcing yourself out into the sun. Everything rings different in the light. I am slow in the warmth. A breeze drying my soft skin. Transforming it. Tempering it to steel. Polishing it until it shines. You can't see your face in it. Old friends won`t recognize you. And you won`t recognize them. Remixed, remodeled, restructured. Bold explorers discovering purpose anew. Before all you did was eat. First steps you stumble. Unsure of how many legs you've got. The sun seems to sing her reassurance. Her welcome. Your joints clank and rattle. Like those of a machine. You move stiff and robotic, but swiftly now. Here comes the rain. Heaven cracks back to throw its shower against your armor and you feel invincible, immortal. Impenetrable in the private fortress of this exoskeleton. Shrugging off a god's tears. Blood races. Oxygen pumps. What passes for a heart, this heart, is strong. With no measure of time, you busy yourself with the business of being alive. JAMAL CREATIVE ARTS ENSEMBLE, THE KHAN Drum Dance to the Motherland LP
Eremite presents the definitive vinyl edition of the most legendary private press underground jazz album of the 1970s. There's not another record on the planet that sounds even remotely like vibraphonist Khan Jamal's eccentric, one-of-a-kind masterpiece, Drum Dance to the Motherland. In its improbable fusion of free jazz expressionism, black psychedelia, and full-on dub production techniques, Drum Dance remains a bracingly powerful outsider statement forty-five years after it was recorded live at the Catacombs Club in Philadelphia, 1972. Comparisons to Sun Ra, King Tubby, Phil Cohran and BYG/Actuel merely hint at the cosmic otherness conjured by The Khan Jamal Creative Arts Ensemble and by sound engineer Mario Falana's real-time enhancements. Originally issued by Jamal in 1973 in an edition of three hundred copies on Dogtown records, Drum Dance to the Motherland was effectively a myth until Eremite's 2005 CD reissue (MTE 050CD). Eremite's LP edition has been a long time coming. With the master tapes long vanished, the audio was transferred on the pneumatic Rockport table at Sony Music's 54th street studio from a minty copy of the original LP, manually de-clicked, and remastered on Sony's vintage outboard tube EQs by Ben Young and Andreas K. Myer. The LP is pressed on premium audiophile quality vinyl by RTI from a Kevin Gray lacquer. Alan Sherry at Siwa Studios screenprinted by hand every component of the package: the screenprinted labels and heavyweight Stoughton laserdisc jackets reproduce exactly the artwork of the original Dogtown release. A screenprinted insert with Ed Hazell's detailed telling of Drum Dance's incredible history and eremite's signature retro-audiophile screenprinted dust sleeves are unique to this edition. 999 copies. Personnel: Khan Jamal - vibraphone, marimba, clarinet; Alex Ellison - drums and African percussion; Mario Falana - sound effects; Dwight James - drums, glockenspiel, clarinet; Billy Mills - fender bass, double bass; Monette Sudler - guitar, percussion.

AZYMUTH Azimuth LP
2017 repress. Far Out Recordings present a reissue of the seminal debut album from Azymuth, Azimüth, originally released in 1975. Having never seen a vinyl release outside of Brazil, Azimüth is considered a milestone in Brazilian music. Azymuth -- Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti, and Alex Malheiros, as well as Ariovaldo Contesini -- formed in the late '60s just as Os Mutantes released their debut record (1968). Whilst Mutantes were honing a psychedelic "Amazonian" version of western pop music, Azymuth were creating a futuristic, electric interpretation of US jazz -- also driven by the same rootsy Brazilian "swing" that Mutantes had harnessed. Bertrami was the drive behind Azymuth's sound -- a control freak and musical genius obsessed with the latest technology who wanted to use it to push the boundaries of music in a way that no one else in Brazil had done. His use of keyboards has drawn comparisons between Azymuth's work and Herbie Hancock's early '70s output, yet with its Brazilian swing Azymuth's electric jazz sound is unmistakably their own. Conti is an impulsive and an incredibly energetic drummer. Alex Malheiros, who learned his trade playing from the master of Brazilian swing Ed Lincoln, is one of Brazil's original groove masters. Bertrami rose to fame as an arranger in the mid-60s, and by the late '60s he was arranging for the queen of Brazilian music, Elis Regina. Released in summer 1975, the album was a minor commercial success selling 200,000 copies. Opening track "Linha do Horizonte" -- a sublime piece of melancholic electronic saudade where deep cinematic synths melt into gently strummed acoustic jazz guitar -- was chosen for a TV novella and went on to sell half a million, propelling Azymuth onto the Brazilian music scene. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint -- "Melô Dos Dois Bicudos" sees Azymuth plugging them into the Brazilian national grid for a slice of electrified psyched out samba funk with crashing military drums, shrieking sirens and psych synths. "Brazil" is a lolloping bass led groover with Bertrami's melody giving the track a charming, innocent naivety, and "Caça A Raposa" is a boogie jazz funk groover. Azimüth is the album that kick-started it all for them, the record that was the blueprint and definition of their "samba doido/crazy samba" sound. Comes in a gatefold sleeve; 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500.

BRIGGS, BRIAN Selected Music From The Album Brian Damage 12"
"So who is Brian Briggs? Well, to those who carefully read the production credits on records, his real name is John Holbrook, a well-respected mixer and sound engineer who worked, produced and recorded on Todd Rundgren's Bearsville Records from 1974 to 1980, and prior to that, at IBC studios in London (most notably on The Who's Tommy & Hendrix's Electric Ladyland). Over the years the name of this music industry veteran has been attached to countless recordings, with many of them hitting platinum status. Another piece of trivia also tells us that once upon a time Holbrook worked for EMS, a legendary company that specialized on sound synthesis. So what's exactly going on with this record? At first glance, we could say it's a new wave record (passed through a filter of synths and drum machine-like percussions) touching on different Rock styles in a similar way to Devo. There's rockabilly on his cover of Eddie Cochran's 'Nervous Breakdown', Surf Rock on 'Spy vs. Spy' and even ska-tinted dub on 'Psyclone'. So how did this pastiche of pop styles give us a record that was considered a classic at The Loft in New York City as well as at Italian clubs like Cosmic and Easy Going? The key is on Side 1. 'AEO (Parts I & II)' is basically the chant you'd imagine Nature making through a sequencer. With heavy electronic percussions, analog synth sounds reminiscent of water splashes, and tape echo effects that can easily be mistaken to be the callings of birds and other animals during mating season, 'AEO' has the DNA of every Balearic track to come. While equally giving a nod to the East and mother Africa, it makes sense why this record was popular with impeccable selectors like David Mancuso and Danielle Baldelli. Often bootlegged or found in compilations, we are honored to bring you this minimal classic by Brian Briggs in all its glory including the incredible pop art cover reminiscent of the Bazooka bubble gum packaging which probably also inspired the logo of that notorious Art Gallery on 76 Grand Street, NYC."

CYMBELINE 1965-1971 CD
Previously unreleased DIY homemade psychedelia, teen beat, and fuzz-psych/prog by the amazing Swedish band Cymbeline, recorded from 1965-1971. Tracks like "Third Image" or "Look At The Stars" are an incredible find for anyone into US garage-psych (they wouldn't sound out of place on any Pebbles or Psychedelic Unknowns volume) and others like "Flicka", "Stolta Vingar", or "Mittuppslag" are top-notch, '70s fuzzed-out Scandinavian psych/prog. Formed in the industrial town of Norrköping in the mid '60s, Cymbeline (also known as Motala Ström and W&J) only released a 45 in 1971 before breaking up. But during their existence, the band recorded a lot of stuff, included here for the first time along with their rare 45. Cymbeline was basically two guys, Michael Journath and Anders Weyde, who met in 1965 while they both played in beat bands. They started recording songs at Anders's little home studio with help with some friends, and that's how songs like "Imagination" and "Look At The Stars" -- amazing examples of homemade teen beat -- were born. At the same time, Michael and Anders were feeling a bit tired of playing cover versions with their beat bands, so they decided to start recording more experimental stuff, using armchairs and furniture as percussion, sounds from seagulls and birds, an electric cocktail mixer, and improvising lyrics -- these incredible experiments were recorded as "Images", including the killer garage-psych sounding "Third Image". As the years passed by, the home studio improved and new songs were recorded in a more psych-prog vein, some of them included here. They also played a few live gigs with some help from other local musicians. In 1970, Ulf Ryberg joined the group and soon after a 45 was released containing his song "New York". The flip side was "Sixth Image", originally one of the "Images" but rearranged and re-recorded (1971). In 1971, demos for an LP were recorded at Europafilm Studios in Stockholm. Two fantastic songs are included here and the sound is different from the earlier recordings -- closer to the groups live performances. So, 40 years later, here is the LP that Cymbeline always dreamed of. Remastered sound; Insert with photos and liner notes by band member Michael Journath.

VA Habibi Funk CD
"Habibi Funk is dedicated to re-releasing a style of music that historically never existed as a musical genre. We use the term to describe a certain sound that we like from the countries of the Arab world. The songs we chose were created in places quite far from another and under very different circumstances. Some were written and recorded during war times, others in exile. Despite the differences we think there is a musical connection between them. Essentially, we are interested in the musical endeavors, in which artists from the Arab world mixed local and regional influences with musical interests that came from outside of the region. Even though the name suggests it's all about funk music, our focus is more than just that. Often these influences might be inspired from Western popular music such as soul, pop and rock but it's not limited to that either. Some of our favorite records are best described as Arabic zouk (a genre originating from the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe) like Mallek Mohamed's music, Algerian coladera (a popular musical style from the Cape Verdean islands) or Lebanese AOR, which means the process of musical influences displayed on this compilation was much more versatile than just taking Western music as a blueprint and translating it with a local accent. The compilation features 15 different artists. Some you might already know thru Habibi Funk's releases like Fadoul, Ahmed Malek, Dalton or Al Massrieen, while others are meant as an introduction to artists like Kamal Keila, Sharhabeel Ahmed, Attarazat Addahabia & Mallek Mohamed who will all release full length albums on Habibi Funk in 2018. In today's world there are still many stereotypical conceptions to be found when it comes to the Arab world. Contrary to what a lot of Western narratives and media suggest, the Arab world we got to know through extensive traveling in several countries of North Africa and the Middle East, is a very versatile terrain. A place full of different stories, ideas and beliefs. And we hope that the music we release helps as a tiny, tiny piece of a larger puzzle to establish a diverse, more nuanced yet adequate idea of how musically vibrant this very diverse region once has been and also still is. At the same time we do not want anyone to misunderstand this compilation as a selection of songs to represent Arabic musical history of the 1970s and 1980s. This compilation is nothing more than a very personal curation of songs we like and in no way reflects on what has been popular in a general sense. All tracks on this compilation are directly licensed from the artist or, in the case of artists who are sadly no longer alive, from the artist's family. There are three exceptions: Hamid Al Shaeri's track was licensed from SLAM! and the tracks from Belbao and Attarazat Addahabia were both licensed from Boussiphone. As a European label dealing with non-western artists we try to be aware of the responsibilities that derive within the making, seen from a post-colonial point of view by demanding ourselves not to reproduce exploitative economic patterns. We split all of the profits from our releases equally with the artists without deducting any costs that are not directly related to the release .Our agreements are license deals with limited terms after which the rights fall back to the artist or the artist's families. We think it is important in today's reissue market, where too many shady business transactions happen, to be transparent about our licensing policies." The CD version comes with a 24 page booklet with liner notes, info about all artist and releases.

BAILEY, DEREK Solo Guitar Volume 1 2LP
Honest Jon's Records present Solo Guitar Volume 1, a reissue of Derek Bailey's Solo Guitar release on Incus in 1971, with additional tracks included on previous reissues and a performance at York University in 1972. Kicking off a series of collaborations between Honest Jon's Records and Incus: three double-LPs of the legendary free-improvising guitarist Derek Bailey, solo and in duos with Anthony Braxton (HJR 201LP) and Han Bennink (HJR 202LP), augmenting the original releases with marvelous, previously unissued music. Recorded in 1971, Solo Guitar Volume 1 was Bailey's first solo album. Its cover is an iconic montage of photos taken in the guitar shop where he worked. He and the photographer piled up the instruments whilst the proprietor was at lunch, with Bailey promptly sacked on his return. The LP was issued in two versions over the years -- Incus 2 and 2R -- with different groupings of free improvisations paired with Bailey's performances of notated pieces by his friends Misha Mengelberg, Gavin Bryars, and Willem Breuker. All this music is here, plus a superb solo performance at York University in 1972, a welcome shock at the end of an evening of notated music. It's a striking demonstration of the way Bailey rewrote the language of the guitar with endless inventiveness, intelligence, and wit. As throughout the series, the recordings are newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The records are manufactured by Pallas.

The second release in a series of collaborations between Honest Jon's Records and Incus: three double-LPs of the legendary free-improvising guitarist Derek Bailey, solo (HJR 200LP) and in duos with Anthony Braxton and Han Bennink (HJR 202LP), augmenting the original releases with marvelous, previously unissued music. Recorded in 1974, at the Royal Hotel in Luton, with Braxton playing soprano and alto saxophones, and Bb and contrabass clarinets. Two volumes were planned; only one was issued, till now. This was an early transatlantic meeting between the leading free improvisers. Many of Braxton's signature techniques and ideas were gestated in such sessions. It still brims with inquisitive musical creativity and knockabout jazzbo allusiveness. Newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The tussling vegetables in Mal Dean's cover-sketch somehow befit perfectly this extraordinary duo of Bailey and the great Dutch drummer Han Bennink. Recorded in London in 1972, Incus 9 was their second record (after an Instant Composers Pool in 1969), becoming a blueprint and inspiration for generations of free-improvisers. It is paired here with a brilliant session from the following year, with the same power and friendly combativeness, and oodles of creativity, technique, and humor. It's obvious how much they loved playing together. Newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The records are manufactured by Pallas.

RAINFOREST SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT Papua Land Where Spirits Still Rule LP
Completing the reissue cycle of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement's ambient invocations, Papua Land Where Spirits Still Rule, originally released on four cassettes in 2012, is rendered in this new remaster by Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Ben Frost) and sacrificed to vinyl for the first and last time on Hospital Productions. Slotting alongside five previous vinyl reissues of the original tape editions released over the course of 2017, Papua loops back to the start of the saga, affording a clearer and more immersive way into one of Dominick Fernow's most (oc)cultish projects. The eight-track dosage of Papua generated a wave of speculation as to its shadowy provenance back in 2012. It sounded little like anything else in circulation and left heads genuinely floundering for answers to its riddling track titles and extreme aesthetics; a steeply evocative combination of near-infrasonic sub-bass tones and cold but humid environmental sounds laced with slow, looping, tribal rhythms. It took at least another year before the project was revealed as an outlet for Hospital Productions capo Dominick Fernow, who had been quietly taking the opportunity to explore a sound putatively unfamiliar to his better known projects. Yet, with hindsight, it's now easier to hear RSE as an inverse, endothermic alternative to the raging energies of his Prurient output or the searing, propulsive combustions of Vatican Shadow, for example. In stark contrast to proceeding instalments' increasing track lengths, Papua is comprised of eight relatively concise parts, with each side of vinyl relating to one of the original tapes. The A side seeps into consciousness in frightening style with Paul Corley's remaster now bringing the long, slippery sub-bass descent of "There Are Many Powerful Spirits Living In The Hills And Stones And It Is Not A Good Idea To Disturb Them" to life with uncanny psychoacoustic subtlety, before hypnotic rhythms take possession for the duration and the listener is eventually deposited at the bombed-out ambient ecology of "The Spirit Was Angry And Froze The Bulldozer So It Could Not Move. The Bulldozer Is Still There Today." What occurs between those points defies description in the manner of the strongest psychedelics, and likewise, requires deep immersion for full comprehension. RIYL: Coil, Demdike Stare, Prurient, Brian Eno / Jon Hassell's Fourth World (1980). Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

RAINFOREST SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT Taking Place In The Foyer LP
Taking Place In The Foyer was originally released in a run of just 14 copies on double-tape back in 2012 and is now available on vinyl for the first time as part of the ongoing Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement reissue series. The newly remastered, first and last ever vinyl cut of Taking Place In The Foyer forms the penultimate instalment in Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement's necessary reissue scheme. Originally appearing second in the series, it then served to only heighten the enigma of a project which was, as yet, undisclosed as the work of Dominick Fernow, who's maybe best known for his transgressive Prurient output, and the Muslimgauze-inspired rhythmic reportage of Vatican Shadow, as well as overseeing the ever Hospital Productions imprint. On its original release, each of RSE's hand-duplicated and super limited tape editions were rabidly devoured by Hospital Productions disciples with little or no firm knowledge of the project's provenance, this one included. Understandably they became coveted items for hardcore disciples and new admissions to the label's occult mass alike, often fetching multiples of the original retail price on the second hand market. Taking Place In The Foyer is among the most cherished of the early RSE instalments. Following and diverging his unheimlich path, these four tracks find Fernow broadening his temporal scope and entrenching the spirits farther from home, covering bleaker terrain with the trudging momentum and shuddering conclusion of "Spot A Witch By Changes In The Person's Behavior", whereas "In New Guinea Police Don't Have The Petrol Money To Search For The Witch Murderers" locates him toiling aleatoric at some dank workshop, and the unanswered CB radio crackle of "Bodies Of Suspected Witches Are Dumped In The River Or Buried In Toilet Pits" sets up the petrifying closing scene of "Sorcery Killings". RSE can be taken as a minimal, supernatural-focused adjunct to Vatican Shadow's war commentary, invoking a more abstract, visceral and haptic sound, leaving us stranded in a tropical-rain streaked AR soundscape. RIYL: Coil, Demdike Stare, Prurient, Brian Eno / Jon Hassell's Fourth World (1980). Remastered by Paul Corley; Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

It's time to let the cat out of the bag on this one. The dankly cavernous and unsettling acid maneuvers of Dome circa their first three LPs (though absent vocals) are the nearest antecedent I can summon for the principal thrust of the sound here. So too, there's a ritualistic dimension to this stuff that's also a bit suggestive of something like Vasilisk or The Hybryds, though the arcane initiatory atmosphere here is far more penetrating that anything I've heard either of those two muster. Combine that with a Johan Hedran-like overlay of wafting, heat-warped systemic electronics and you're at least in the general neighborhood, but these are only indicators pointing toward the occult sonic universe that The Mask Of The Imperial Family are enacting..."

With the recent acclaim of BB King and Bobby 'Blue' Bland's joint double album venture Together For The First Time... Live (1974), the addition of another King could only double the impact. The performance at the Memphis Blues Festival, Tennessee on November 8th, 1975, was set to be an explosive encounter between artist and audience, dipping into the darker reaches of their combined catalogues whilst flirting with new material. Bland was still relatively young next to the Kings who were now in their 50s, but the spirit of the blues is a force of nature that never lets up, no matter what age. Includes the full original FM broadcast, professionally remastered, with background liners and rare archival photographs.

Contemporary Italo-disco and foggy rave culture mark Margot's first 12" on Life And Death, Amore a Bordo Pista. Machines breathe on "Amore a Bordo Pista", where throbbing synth-bass meets timeless vocoder, as premiered on DJ Tennis's Essential Mix debut. The afterparty and warehouse meld on the flip, "Salsce", is a mind-bending time-warp somewhere between panic and introspection. Technicolor signee, Dauwd, aces his re-depicton of the title track, hinting at golden-era Chain Reaction, while Kiwi slows down "Salsce", retaining all of its drive, adding further cosmic brushstrokes. VA Duomo Sounds Ltd: Nigerian '80s Disco Music To Move Your Soul CD
In the late '70s, the thrust of mainstream music had changed from the indigenous highlife to a more international funky disco sound. Keyboards and drum machines were the key components of the new sound. The implications on sales was real as names like Bunny Mack, Chris Okotie, Christy Essien, and Jide Obi replaced Osita Osadebe and the Oriental Brothers on the charts. It was in this effervescent climate that Duomo Sounds Ltd was established by Humphrey Aniakor, a business man with no prior investment in the industry. It was simply the in-thing for a young affluent businessman. The name suggested European sophistication, modernity and a little abstraction. D U O M O Sounds, the kids loved it. The first release was Bassey Black's Someone To Love which sold over a 100,000 copies, a big hit at the time. The success of the album attracted several artists the most influential of which was Mike Umoh. He aimed for the pop market with accessible, funky arrangements. However his affinity for funk and disco has made him a reference for collectors worldwide. His LP entitled, Honey, Honey was the label's second release and his most successful album. He also produced the label's 19th release, Bindiga's No More Starvation, an Afro-boogie funk masterpiece. The album in its original format is very sought after by collectors and DJs and changes hands for huge sums. It's been described by many as cosmic funk at its finest. Christy Ogbah's disco soul/highlife records on Duomo are also very highly sought after. This new Livingstone Studio release presents the best of Duomo Sounds Ltd. for the first time. Features Christy Ogbah, Johnny O, Mike Umoh, Bindiga, Bassey Black and The Natty Messiah, Godfrey Odili, and Eunice Mokus Arimoku. Liner notes by Nigerian Music expert Uchenna Ikkone; Includes previously unpublished photos.

THOR & FRIENDS The Subversive Nature Of Kindness LP
LP version. "The Subversive Nature of Kindness is the sophomore effort from Thor & Friends, the avant-chamber ensemble formed by its namesake, polymath percussionist Thor Harris. The album was recorded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, produced by Jeremy Barnes from A Hawk & A Hacksaw and engineered by Barnes and Deerhoof's John Dietrich. It is hoped that the melodic meditations offered up will ease some of the terror of living in these uncertain times. The three primary members of the band are Peggy Ghorbani on marimba, Sarah 'Goat' Gautier on marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, organ, voice, mellotron and piano, and Harris on sundry percussion and wind instruments, including some of his own devising. The band has toured extensively over the past year and have performed live with many guest musicians. All these players have influenced the way the group hears its music and this had a significant impact on this new album. On this recording voice plays a more prominent role with the core trio being joined by several guest singers who provide wordless vocals: Stine Janvin Motland, an opera singer from Oslo, Norway; Michael Gira from Swans; Enrique Soriah, a throat singer from Oregon. It features more fully developed string arrangements by Barnes and Heather Trost. There are also contributions from similarly adventurous musicians including Jhno Delicateer on Armenian Duduk, violin improvisationist Aisha Burn, and Adam Torres, who provides finger-picked guitar. The band draws on classic Minimalist composers including Terry Riley and Steve Reich, but also amalgamates such diverse influences as Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Moondog and The Necks. They embody utopian optimism by rooting their art and operation in both improvisation and the involvement of neighbors and friends in their process, making use of what and who is around at any given moment."

APARICIO MOOG, EMILIO Expansion Galactica CD
Mental Experience present the first ever collected works of Guatemalan electronic experimental musician Emilio Aparicio, collecting five 45s he released from 1969-1971. Aparicio was an, a pioneer in using the Moog synth in Latin America. He released a series of private 45s, recorded at his home studio in collaboration with his patron and producer, the painter Roberto Abularach. It is from 1969-1971, when the recordings included here, were registered. Most of the tracks were written at the country house of Abularach, where Emilio built his own home recording studio and where he spent long periods of seclusion. It is in this house where they also spent weeks experimenting with hallucinogens (LSD and datura) in the company of other artists from the underground arts scene of Guatemala. The fruit of those two years of experimentation were released in less than one month as five volumes of a 45 housed in a generic picture sleeve and titled Música Electrónica ("Electronic Music"). These strange records were given away in exchange of four corks of a local drink called Salvavidas Roja, related to Abularach's family. Most of the 45s were destroyed and recycled and soon after Emilio created another experimental project, La Banda Plástica. Aparicio's music is a fascinating blend of primitive homemade electronics with Latin influences. Imagine "Psyche Rock" era Pierre Henry (1970), Gershon Kingsley, and Bruce Haack meeting Joe Meek at the Guatemalan jungle. Emilio Aparicio passed away on 2012. Remastered sound; Insert with rare photos and liner notes by Ruffy Tnt (Discodelic)."In 2010, I was searching for old records in the city of Quetzaltenango in Guatemala. I found myself in a dusty basement which had been in another time the warehouse of Iximché, a rock-o-la machines distributor. It was an exciting discovery, two big rooms full of old 45s but also dust and rat's dung. Among some incredible finds, I found two strange private 45s which had been released by local drink company. The song titles, 'Brujería' ('Witchcraft') and 'Transmutación del iniciado' ('Transmutation of the initiated') matched perfectly with the abstract psychedelic/electronic instrumental Moog sounds emanating from the grooves. I was fascinated and I knew I had a mission: to discover and tell the world the story behind Emilio Aparicio Moog. After seven years, I finally managed to locate all of his recordings, eight in total." --from the liner notes by Ruffy Tnt (Discodelic)

CALCIUM Calcium LP
Monster Mélodies present the never before released album by Calcium. A legendary French psychedelic rock album, recorded in 1969, of which only two tracks were released at the time. Percussionist Stéphane Vilar played with pianist Jef Gilson and recorded on his 1964 album Oeil Vision (OI 012LP). Musician Graeme Allwright introduced Vilar to Marc'O, then director of the theater school of the American Center Boulevard Raspail. The director, looking for musicians to play rock n' roll in his project Les Idols, hired Vilar along with jazz pianist Patrick Greussay, saxophonist Didier Malherbe (Gong, Clearlight), and guitarist Didier Léon who features on the Barney Wilen's 1972 album Moshi (FFL 015LP). Stéphane then recruited jazz bassist Jacques Zins through Jérôme Savary. Les Idols is where the musicians who baptized The Rollsticks played. It was performed in 1966 and was later adapted for a feature film in 1968, where the same participants were joined by Valérie Lagrange. Stéphane Vilar then decided, together with his brother the painter Christophe, to create his own band which included some of the Rollsticks: Jacques Zins, Patrick Greussay, Didier Léon, drummer Alain Sirguy, and singer Danièle Ciarlet known as Zouzou. Model and muse of the Parisian night scene, Zouzou acted in Eric Rohmer's Afternoon Love (1972). Considered to be the French Marianne Faithfull, she released two 45 EPs orchestrated by Jacques Dutronc. She represents the image of the liberated woman in France in the sixties. The group took the name of Jardin, and soon changed it to Calcium. Thanks to financial support from Sylvina Boissonnas, the group bought instruments and practiced and refined the compositions for a year before recording. Two recording sessions were held at the Davout studios in 1969. Christophe was replaced by guitarist Denys Lable who later recorded on Jean Claude Vannier's L'enfant Assassin Des Mouches (FKR 001X-LP). After the recordings, Michel Taittinger, the heir of the namesake Champagne and television producer, obtained a contract with Pathé for the band. A single was put on the market without any promotion, resulting in poor sales. It's now considered to be one of the rarest singles of French psychedelic rock. Due to the disinterest of the record company, which only wanted put Zouzou's character forward to create a new Janis Joplin, the masters for the album were abandoned on a shelf for forty-eight years. Color vinyl; Includes two inserts; Edition of 1000 (numbered).

MASIN, GIGI Talk to the Sea 2LP
2017 repress. The highly-anticipated second release from the Music From Memory label takes you into the world of Italian musician Gigi Masin. Part of only a small and very much underground music scene in his hometown of Venice, Gigi Masin self-released two modestly pressed LPs, Wind (1986) and Wind Collector (1991), and appeared alongside Charles Hayward for the Sub Rosa compilation LP Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2 (1988). Having met with little commercial success in Italy at the time, Gigi Masin's solo albums remained for the most part totally unknown. His music has though in recent years, and seemingly by pure word of mouth, developed almost something of a cult following. Gigi Masin's uniquely intricate and at times deeply emotive compositions take the listener into a realm of contemplation, a spellbound mind state where time and space appear to dissolve. His sparse and hypnotic often loop-based compositions seem to draw parallels with Detroit techno's earliest beginnings, all at once conjuring those same feelings of both melancholic longing and ecstatic joy. With access to Masin's large body of work, far greater than that of the handful of released recordings, Music From Memory's new compilation covers a period of over 30 years, from the mid-1980s up until recent works. Including 17 compositions, most of which have remained unreleased or unavailable until now, Talk to the Sea aims to shine a light on Gigi Masin's unique and heartfelt talent. This is electronic music from the soul.

ALEXANDER Alexander CD
"Alexander is the solo guitar project of New Haven, CT native David Shapiro (Headroom, Nagual). After spending most of 2016 and 2017 touring behind an on-going series of improvised cassette releases that document the various locations Shapiro has lived, he settled down long enough to offer up a full-length LP of fingerpicking tunes. The nine tracks that make up Alexander are bound together by a melancholy sweetness that evokes a performer's wandering lifestyle and the characters they meet along the way. Sonically tied to the 'American Primitive' school of guitar playing, Shapiro distinguishes himself with an exacting, almost academic focus, manipulating tempo and harmony with a confidence far beyond his young years. Where masters like Fahey and Basho drew from earlier musical lineage, Alexander incorporates a contemporary pool of influence, broadening the fingerstyle palette with patience and self-assuredness. Recorded on a guitar that Shapiro built himself, Alexander is an earnest and substantive debut that gives the listener a window into the player's intimate devotion to his instrument and the language it speaks." --Ian McColm Cover text by Cyd Goodwin. FRIEDMAN, BURNT Anthology 1980-2017 CD
Anthology 1980-2017 is a compilation spanning a period of 37 years featuring Burnt Friedman's releases and edits thereof from vinyl-only labels (Latency, Marionette, Dekmantel, amongst others), plus four hitherto unreleased tracks. This compilation surveys Friedman's music from 1980 to 2017 and covers a broad spectrum of played and programmed rhythmic styles that traverse club music from techno, electro, and dub, but, above all, it traces Friedman's own artistic development; A trajectory that owes a lot to his long-standing collaboration with Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, who died at the age of 79 in 2017. Like Liebezeit, Friedman already explored even and uneven rhythms back in the late 1980s. This selection of 17 tracks documents this pursuit while bringing rough or discarded tracks to light, which did not fit onto any album or were intended for the Nonplace label. The compilation runs the entire gamut of his work on percussion, keyboard, samplers, and toys of all kinds, using various production methods (tape, Atari, MIDI, sampler, hard disk recording, digital audio tape). Studio work (instant-composition, programming, and recording) underwent major technological changes and revolutions in the 1980s and 1990s, but Friedman's distinctive signature style prevails throughout. Surprisingly danceable tracks, interrupted by alien atmospheric periods, defy any genre. "An essential retrospective that shows how Burnt Friedman has been reinventing rhythms for over two decades." --Resident Advisor

GLORIOUS DIN Closely Watched Trains LP
Onderstroom present a reissue of Glorious Din's Closely Watched Trains, originally released in 1987. How a boy from the Sri Lankan jungle formed the greatest post-punk band you've never heard. Fronted by an intense singer with an oblique songbook and a mysterious past, Glorious Din was unlike any other group to emerge from San Francisco's '80s underground. With singer Eric Cope, the chosen persona of a Joy Division-obsessed Sri Lankan boy who travelled halfway around the world to follow his punk dream. The multifaceted nature of the '80s scene -- encompassing everything from three-chord thrash punk to garage-band pop, experimental art rock, and atonal noise -- can seem baffling to outsiders. Glorious Din mesmerizing sound instantly gets under your skin via their non-standard drum patterns, Eastern-sounding guitar melodies, a melodic bass in pole position, and a dissociative singer. The enigmatic group helped total unknowns gain recognition and were the uncommon glue linking Faith No More, the Dead Kennedys, and Michael Franti, as well as R.E.M. and the Cocteau Twins. Glorious Din's appeal was their mysteriousness: a quartet of mismatched musicians not necessarily playing their chosen instruments, with the obscure lyrics of their intense frontman near impossible to decipher. The group imploded after only three years, but their cult appeal has lasted far longer through their two albums and related material. Glorious Din's second album, Closely Watched Trains, had a very different sound from its predecessor. Eric was listening to a lot of Nick Drake, so they mixed the vocals and guitar much louder than the other instruments. Nevertheless, the album showed a growth and maturity on the band's part. Paget plays a metal dobro on some numbers, which adds a sheen of folk to the post-punk proceedings, as heard on the opener "Stilt Walkers". "1651 Map" has Cope seemingly recounting a colonial uprising or an industrial dispute over a sparse rhythm led by Paget's minimal guitar, and early number "Voices Everywhere" is here reprised as a joyous blast, the lyrics speaking of a pending arrival. Paget is well-represented with "Red Dirt", which has fantastic modulated bass from Heeschen, "Circle Star", another freedom track, and the melodious "Blood". Now exactly 30 years later, Closely Watched Trains is still a more than rewarding listen and a vivid document of the times. Cover reconstruction by Jeroen Wille. Includes booklet with interview and liner notes. Remastered by Equus. 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 1000.

MIKAMI/JOHN EDWARDS/ALEX NIELSON, KAN Live at Cafe Oto CD
Japanese bluesman Kan Mikami is nothing less than an unalloyed force of nature; a skin-shredding blast of frozen wind from the poor, rural north of Japan that he calls home. In the late 1960s, like thousands of other Japanese young people Mikami made his way to Tokyo in search of a life different from that of his parents. Since then he has forcefully carved out a space for himself in the culture as a modernist poet, a raging folk singer, an author, an actor, an engaging TV personality, and one of Japan's most uniquely powerful performers. For most of Mikami's career as a singer, he has performed solo; just him and his electric guitar against the world, creating jagged A-minor vamps to drive along the surreal wisdom of his lyrics. But he's equally at home in more demanding improvisational contexts such as those provided here by John Edwards on bass and Alex Nielson on drums. Their dense propulsive textures seem to spur on Mikami, his voice arcing powerfully into fragmented spaces, his guitar darting, colliding, shedding jagged and angular splinters of sound. A pulsing, raging maelstrom of serrated-edged energy. Gruff, rough, honest and very, very real.

Thanks to the work of adventurous in-house producers and sound engineers like Josep Llobell, Joan Barcons and Lauren Postigo, funk, rock, disco and jazz arrangements were incorporated to recordings of folkloric flamenco singers and rumba bands. The result was explosive and the Spanish market was flooded with "gipsy-rock" or "rumba pop" 45s and LPs, some of them highly sought-after today by international DJs looking for exotic beats. The apparition of Spanish female duo Las Grecas with their gipsy-rock sound in the '70s created quite a boom in the Spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy-rock duos. Morena Y Clara were one of them. Launched by bizarre flamenco producer Lauren Postigo, they released a string of 45s and three LPs (highly sought after now) for the Discophon label. They mixed rumba, flamenco, psychedelic rock, funk, and disco music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz-wah-phaser electric guitars, Moog, Hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo. No Llores Mas features their psycho-tronic hits like "No Llores Más", "Dejé De Quererte", "Buscando Alegría", and more. Includes insert with liner notes by Txarly Brown (Achilifunk) and photos.

Includes insert with liner notes by Txarly Brown (Achilifunk) and photos. From Txarly Brown's liner notes: "Dolores Vargas was our wildest performer, our Spanish Tina Turner, Ikettes-era. In my opinion, she was a better dancer and singer than Lola Flores but she never received the same media attention than the famous Lola. Maybe it's better this way. Dolores Vargas is wine for sommeliers and since now, music for connoisseurs."

HACKEDEPICCIOTTO Menetekel CD
HackedePicciotto are Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto. Both are legends of their own making: Danielle de Picciotto moved from New York to Berlin in 1987, to become the lead singer of the band Space Cowboys, co-initiator of the Love Parade, a collaborator of the Ocean Club with Gudrun Gut, and Alexander's partner in crime. Alexander Hacke is an original member and the bass player of Einstürzende Neubauten. The artist couple, romantically married in 2006, has creatively interacted with countless international projects for almost two decades. Their live shows are, to put it mildly, intense. Danielle specializes in unusual instruments such as the hurdy gurdy, the autoharp, and the kemençe besides playing the violin and piano; Alexander is master of the bass, guitar and drums. Together they create beautiful, existentialistic, acoustic soundscapes, which roar and vibrate simultaneously. Menetekel is darker than their last masterpiece Perseverantia (POTOMAK 125171, 2016). The title is another word for "the writing on the wall" and the artist couple is projecting our collective despair of what is happening worldwide momentarily into a monumental symphony of sound. "All Are Welcome" whispers in harmony but very quickly the shadows grow deeper and the mood becomes wilder, the trumpets sound and the fall of "Jericho" is eminent, or is it the exile from Paradise? Danielle and Alexander gave up their home in Berlin in 2010 and have been touring the world ever since trying to find a sanctuary comparable to the artist haven the city used to be in the eighties. But times have changed. The icy winds blowing are everywhere and thousands of homeless souls are wandering the roads, their personal search becoming a universal cry for deliverance. "The great rains have begun" Danielle exclaims on "Prophecy", a whirlwind of oriental and western sounds dancing with each other faster and faster until they are morphed into the minimal "Crossroad". The symbolic and spiritual questions asked supply an unusual depth to the album, giving it a universal and very poignant touch of the human quest. CD version comes in a centerfold digi-pack cover.

BELL WITCH Mirror Reaper 2CD
"With their third full-length album Mirror Reaper, Seattle doom metal duo Bell Witch have created their most enormous and all-encompassing work to date. The band takes their blueprint for minimalistic, mournful, yet massive sound and expands it to a new level, doing the unthinkable in the genre: a continuous 83-minute piece unfolding as a single time-stretching track. Once again engineered and mixed by veteran producer Billy Anderson (who claims this as one of the milestones in his entire producing career) the duo of Dylan Desmond (bass, vocals) and Jesse Shreibman (drums, vocals, organ) push the sound even further beyond their landmark 2015 album, the genre-defining Four Phantoms. With organ adding a new layer, the album also sees honorary member and guest vocalist Erik Moogridge (Aerial Ruin) return once again offering an even more prominent presence with his vocals. On the themes surrounding the concept and lyrics, the band states: 'Our original idea for this record was to write a two-song album titled As Above / So Below. These two songs would have been split into seven movements to correlate with the seven Hermetic principals. The process took a life of its own and upon completion we have one song spanning 83 minutes. It is titled in reference to the axiom 'As Above So Below'. During the writing process we were devastated by the loss of our dear friend and former drummer, Adrian Guerra. Out of love for and in respect to his memory, we reserved an important yet brief section in the song for him that features vocal tracks left over from our previous album. We believe he would be proud of it.'"

CELESTIAL TRAX Nothing Is Real LP
PTP (Purple Tape Pedigree) present the debut album by Celestial Trax (real name Joni Judén) entitled Nothing Is Real, which he describes as a departure not only in sound but also geographically and spiritually from his previous output, having found an increased interest in mysticism and the esoteric. Taking inspiration from a quote by Anton Chekov, "if you want to work on your art, work on your life," Judén aimed for the album to be a true representation of his voice at this time. He felt a need to distance himself from the distractions a creative hub like New York City can often provide, not wanting to become too influenced by the city's current trends, and instead shifted his focus inward to cultivate a more meaningful self-connection: this journey and struggle thus serving as the main inspiration to the writing. In beginning of Nothing Is Real, Judén had reached the point of creative purge, deleting almost all samples, sample packs, and software synths. Fueled by ideas of rebirth and true self-projection, he amassed a library of field recordings from New York City, plus samples from his own cassettes, vinyl, and YouTube search history -- utilizing every sound source he could come across in his studio whilst trying to spend as little time as possible on the computer screen. The result is an album less concerned with achieving a masterful polish and sonic bombast, and instead aims for more organic textures where noise and imperfection reflects the human experience, with recurring themes of existentialism, surrealism and nature permeating throughout.

CAROLAN, DREW Matinee: All Ages On The Bowery Book
"Matinee: All Ages On The Bowery was created during the early 1980s when New York City was embroiled in debt and crime, and as the middle class continued to evaporate, the city confronted one of the most trying periods in its history. Paradoxically, its underground music scene was teeming with vitality like never before. Still staggering from the violent outset and eventual deterioration of punk rock, hundreds of disenfranchised kids living in the city and outlying boroughs began forming their own groups to rail against the everyday trials and prejudices of urban existence. As a result, New York City became a hub for a flourishing hardcore scene; a cultural phenomena that used punk rock as a platform for a politically charged, inherently regional catharsis. Between 1983 and 1985, local photographer Drew Carolan began photographing the patrons of the now infamous hardcore matinees that were going on at the seminal underground music club, CBGB. During the week, Carolan was working as an assistant to legendary portrait photographer Richard Avedon, and on weekends he set up a makeshift studio across the street from CBGB and intercepted kids on their way to the all-ages afternoon shows. The result is a collection of photographs capturing the beauty, vulnerability, and the unbridled energy of youth during the height of the Reagan years. The Bowery at that time was a true melting pot of downtrodden adults, underage hardcore punk kids, and people living on the fringes of society. Now, more that thirty years later, all of that has disappeared and a copacetic, prosperous, and gentrified element has taken its place. While the hardcore punk scene still thrives today, these photographs capture a time and place in history that no longer exists." 146 pages; hard 9.5x9.x5" hard cover with black and white photography.

LES FILLES DE ILLIGHADAD Eghass Malan CD
Future Tuareg music from the female led avant-rock group Les Filles de Illighadad. Mixing traditional percussion with electric guitars, Les Filles brings ancient village folk music into the modern era. Drawing on traditional tende music, the forgotten inspiration of Tuareg guitar, Fatou Seidi Ghali and Les Filles breathe new life into the genre. Hypnotic guitar riffs, driving rhythm, and polyphonic resonant vocals combine to create organic sound, that is both timeless and natural. A wholly original project, from a band that just last year had never left their village. Eghass Malan is their first studio production. Les Filles are all from Illighadad, a secluded commune in central Niger. The sound that defines rural Niger is a music known as "tende". It takes its name from a drum, built from a goat skin stretched across a mortar and pestle. It is a music form dominated by women. In the past years, certain genres of Tuareg music have become popular in the west. International acts of "desert blues" like Tinariwen, Bombino, and Mdou Moctar have become synonymous with the name "Tuareg". But guitar music is a recent creation. In the 1970s young Tuareg men living in exile in Libya and Algeria discovered the guitar. Lacking any female vocalists to perform tende, they began to play the guitar to mimic this sound, replacing water drums with plastic jerrycans and substituting a guitar drone for the vocal call and response. In time, this new guitar sound came to eclipse the tende. If tende is a music that has always been sung by woman, the Tuareg guitar was its gendered counterpart. Fatou Seidi Ghali, lead vocalist and performer of Les Filles is one of the only Tuareg female guitarists in Niger. Sneaking away with her older brother's guitar, she taught herself to play. While Fatou's role as the first female Tuareg guitarist is groundbreaking, it is just as interesting for her musical direction. In a place where gender norms have created two divergent musics, Fatou and Les Filles are reasserting the role of tende in Tuareg guitar. In lieu of the djembe or the drum kit, so popular in contemporary Tuareg rock bands, Les Filles de Illighadad incorporate the traditional drum and the pounding calabash, half buried in water. Recorded on their debut tour in Europe after just a handful of concerts, Eghass Malan maintains a feeling that is spontaneous and inspired.

KOLETZKI, OLIVER Schneeweiss VIII CD
Over the years, Berlin has been cited as Oliver Koletzki's main point of reference and, more importantly, his endless source of inspiration. His albums Grossstadtmarchen (SVT 037CD, 2009) and Grossstadtmarchen 2, released in two parts (SVT 075LP/SVT 080LP, 2012), are whole-hearted tributes of the German capital, as its importance is continuously hinted and charted. Friedrichshain, one of Berlin's vibrant districts, has always held a special place in Oliver's heart. This is where he started out when he first moved to the city, and this is where he lives now. Kreuzberg's wall paintings adorn Stil Vor Talent's cover sleeves and host their headquarters. There are little to no corners in the city that haven't brought a spark of inspiration into the mix. The Schneeweiss compilation series, now at its eighth installment, is built as a form of tribute to all these particles, tied in together into a series of carefully curated tracks. Each compilation stands at the intersection of the musical and cultural surroundings most prominent of their respective times, acting both as a reminder as well as a timeless sound capsule for the years to come. Features: Super Flu, Solomun, Oliver Koletzki, Bloody Shelby, Lazarusman, Rampa, Andhim, Frankey & Sandrino, Fideles, Several Definitions, Goldsun, HOSH, Township Rebellion, &ME, and Harrion.

REICH/PHILIP GLASS, STEVE Four Organs/Phase Patterns LP
2017 repress. "Steve Reich remains one of the most important figures in 20th century music. Though he studied at the prestigious arts institutions Julliard and Mills College, by the mid- 1960s Reich set about dismantling the very orthodoxy that he had been trained in. Forming a new musical language based on repetitive processes, Reich became established as part of the so-called 'Big Four' of New York minimalists (along with La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Philip Glass). Reich's influence can easily be seen today in both the classical world and contemporary pop music. 'Four Organs' is the ultimate minimalist composition. Performed by Reich, Glass, Art Murphy and Steve Chambers, four identical Farfisa organs strike a single chord and gradually lengthen each note to produce polyrhythms between the players. Anchored by Jon Gibson's stoicallysteady pulse on maracas, the piece deconstructs its opening burst to a sustained mass of sound -- stretching the tones to create (in Reich's words) 'slow-motion music.' Inspired by Reich's early training on drums, 'Phase Patterns' treats the keyboards like tuned percussion instruments: a basic rhythm pattern is played in unison and almost imperceptibly increases tempo to move out-of-sync. Each progressive cycle emphasizes unique figures that are not generated by an individual alone, but rather emerge from the communal expression of the group. Originally released on Shandar in 1971, Four Organs / Phase Patterns is one of most highly regarded avant-garde recordings in the past 45 years. This first-time vinyl reissue features cover photography by artist Michael Snow and is recommended for fans of Neu!, Glenn Branca and Tim Hecker."

KIRCHIN, BASIL Worlds Within Worlds LP
"Basil Kirchin was a pioneering British composer who blurred the lines between musical genres. While his career began in the '40s as a professional jazz drummer, in the '60s he started to make field-recordings, painstakingly splicing tapes and slowing-down sounds until the source material would be virtually unrecognizable. Originally released on Island Records in 1974, Worlds Within Worlds juxtaposes Kirchin's various tape manipulations - -amplified insects, animals, engines, glossolalia of children -- with traditional musical instruments to form an organic totality that has the overall effect of otherworldly, ambient soundscapes. As Brian Eno writes in the liner notes on the original release, 'Within the first couple of minutes it became obvious to me that Basil had not only discovered a whole new area of sound, but had exploited it with extreme skill and sensitivity, producing beautiful and evocative music as well. . . . So Basil Kirchin has made a double contribution: he has not only built the instrument, but has written and played the first successful works for it.' Worlds Within Worlds remains a lost classic in sonic abstraction. This first-time reissue is recommended for fans of Broadcast, Aphex Twin and Nurse With Wound."

GIST, THE Holding Pattern CD
As Young Marble Giants imploded, Stuart Moxham started The Gist, a group more theoretical than real. Members included Vivien Goldman, members of This Heat, Swell Maps, Essential Logic, and various Cardiff pals. One song, "Love At First Sight", led to a French hit by Etienne Daho and a shoegaze version by Lush. Three singles and an album, Embrace The Herd (1982), were released and performed well. The Gist was an attempt to create another sonic world, influenced by travel, Eno, and dub. It was perplexing, and years passed before its originality was revered, via a lengthy Mojo piece, and reissues on Rykodisc, Cherry Red, and 1974 Records. After David Byrne reunited Young Marble Giants to play Meltdown, Stuart reemerged. An extensive trawl through miles of recording tape resulted in the discovery of hundreds of recordings of an unusually high standard. The first fruit of this archaeology is Holding Pattern, an unreleased album by The Gist which might have been Stuart's follow-up to Colossal Youth (1980), instead of the strange choice of the more tentative Embrace The Herd. The confidence of these tracks is bolstered by a closer adherence to pop song structure, despite the relentless sense of experimentation found in nearly every track. Had it been released in its time, several of the songs would be regarded as classics today and much of Stuart's history would tell a different tale. There are plenty of surprises; remarkably, it's fresher and more full of brave ideas than anything new you'll hear in 2017.

CRYSTALIZED MOVEMENTS Mind Disaster LP
Limited 2017 LP reissue of the first Cystalized Movements LP, Mind Disaster, in paste-on sleeve replicating the original 1983 edition -- on the original label, Twisted Village. The Crystalized Movements were formed in 1980 by Wayne Rogers and Ed Boyden, two Tolland High School freshmen brought together by a mutual love of no wave and '60s psychedelia. After three years of experimenting (and countless versions of "Gloria"), they decided in early 1983 that it was time to make an LP. They recorded loose duo versions of some of Wayne's songs, and then promptly split up after graduating from high school in June of 1983. Wayne, under the spell of the Plastic Cloud and Randy Holden, then spent the summer piling on mounds of guitar overdubs. The results were issued as Mind Disaster at the end of that year in a bank-breaking edition of 130 (as Twisted Village #1001). After a minor stir in collectors' circles, it was reissued on the UK Psycho label with a new cover in 1984. It was received by the "psychedelic revival" community with universal horror and quickly went out of print. Wayne, meanwhile, added new members to the band and it treaded on as a little-known Connecticut institution until 1992... The years have been kind to Mind Disaster, and its wah-wah and fuzz overload have made it a much sought after LP. After uncountable requests from our adoring public, Twisted Village finally reissue Mind Disaster, with its original cover. It is perhaps the last teenage garage-psych LP to be made in our time.
