BEHRMAN, DAVID Music With Memory LP
Alga Marghen introduce Music With Memory, a new record LP by David Behrman focused on his '70s work with new small, inexpensive devices then known as "microcomputers" equipped with "memory" to be used in live performances and installations. Side A presents "Interspecies Smalltalk" with Takehisa Kosugi (violin) and David Behrman (electronics). A wild intertwining of two worlds of resonance, structure, and tonality, decades ahead of its time. Commissioned by John Cage and Merce Cunningham as music for the 1984 Cunningham Company dance titled "Pictures", it was made to be performed by Takehisa Kosugi playing violin in his uniquely personal style. Side B includes "Circling Six", an earlier version of a more extended piece titled "Leapday Night". "Circling Six" had six looping synthesizer phrases which could be played along with by the acoustic instrumentalist, on this recording by Werner Durand on saxophone. "Interspecies Smalltalk" and "Circling Six" were pieces for instrumental performers and a small computer-controlled music system that Behrman assembled during the 1980s. The electronic gear consisted of pitch sensors ("ears" with which it listened to the performing musicians), various music synthesizers (some homemade), a video display, and a personal computer. The pieces were made with computer programs governing interaction between performers and the electronics. The software created situations rather than set pieces. The performers had options rather than instructions, and the exploration of each situation as it unfolded was up to them. Also on side B is a short track titled "All Thumbs" for two electrified mbiras (African instruments of ancient origin also known as thumb pianos, kalimbas, or zanzas). This piece grew out of a collaborative sound and video installation that George Lewis and David Behrman made for the opening of the Paris science museum La Villette in the spring of 1986. The metal tines of the mbiras were linked to sensors and to a computer music system. In this concert version, played together with Fast Forward, the piece was in several sections. All the sounds in "All Thumbs" were electronically generated. Includes liner notes by David Behrman and photos of the performances, as well as original programs of the Music With Memory Festival. Edition of 400.

SUN RA AND HIS INTERGALACTIC MYTH SCIENCE SOLAR ARKESTRA Sleeping Beauty LP
Originally released in 1979; 2017 remastered repress of Art Yard's 2005 reissue. One of the more delicate recordings of Sun Ra's 28-strong Arkestra, Sleeping Beauty drifts in on a cloud of cosmic dust, sounding unlike anything before or after. With drummer Luqman Ali keeping the narcotic funk, but with dreamy solos from other key Arkestra players like John Gilmore, Michael Ray, and Marshall Allen, no Sun Ra collection is complete without this LP. Inspired space-age lullaby music.

SEVERED HEADS Brave New Waves Session: Severed Heads (Blue Vinyl) LP

VA Secao Ritmica: Instrumental Funk From '70s Brazil CD
"Brazil has always had its own brand of musical virtuosity, one that combined a distinctive and innate rhythmic swing with an effortless ability to turn seemingly abstract riffs into ridiculously catchy hooks. In the late '60s and '70s when these talented players in Rio and Sao Paolo turned their focus towards the North American funk scene and bands like Kool & the Gang, the Meters and the JBs, a new element was added to the mix. As the more polished sound exemplified by Quincy Jones and CTI Records took hold, Brazilian musicians fired right back with their own distinct twist on the sound, one that inevitably revolved around a rhythm section laying down grooves that were both the tightest and the most supple imaginable. If that combination seems paradoxical, this collection will make the notion clear. Culled from the times no vocalist was claiming the spotlight, these instrumentals focus firmly on the rhythm section and its funky accompaniment, a journey through the '70s heyday of instrumental funk from Brazil from its rawest roots to refined boogie gems."

ZOV ZOV Fata Morgana LP + 7"
"The industrial project of Oliver Ho and Tommy Gillard at its most subversive and evocative, with two preoccupations threaded throughout: Middle-Eastern percussion, most vivid in the chimes of 'Casting' and the driving doumbek rhythms of 'Burning' and 'The Sands'; and the structural iteration of chaos, underlying a collage of wild left-turns, scornful of repetitive hooks and other musical routines. Early birds bag a 7" by Ho's 'Desert Burials', evoking classic punk/funk hybrids like Cabaret Voltaire."

SHACKS, THE Follow Me/Texas 7"
"Big Crown is proud to present the first single from The Shacks debut album Haze, out worldwide March 30th. Since the release of their self-titled EP in 2016 The Shacks have been collecting fans that are fast becoming as hypnotized as we've been since first hearing Shannon's ethereal voice on top of 'Strange Boy'. Highlights of the year have been opening tours for Chicano Batman, and Khruangbin, as well as 'This Strange Effect' becoming world famous via the Apple iPhone 8 ad campaign. The A side, 'Follow Me', was one of the first songs recorded for Haze almost two years ago. With 'black mirror'-esque lyrics over a hypnotic mid-tempo groove, 'Follow Me' leaves you feeling joyful, calmed, and queasy, all at the same time. The B side 'Texas' is another song from their upcoming album. Recorded in Max Shrager's home studio in Princeton and then finished with Leon Michels at the Diamond Mine in Queens. Texas is a perfect representation of The Shacks signature sound with Shannon's voice balancing out the gritty yet smooth production."

PAUL & THE TALL TREES/MATTISON I Explained It All/Watch Out 7"
"The A side 'I Explained It All' is an early Paul & The Tall Trees recording done in between recording sessions for Our Love In The Light. A haunting number equal parts floaty vocal and crushing drums co-produced by Paul & Leon Michels. From Paul on the session: 'The new year approaching. Saturday we'd have a P&TTT family get together. Write music. It was dark and damp down there. Smokey. Windows the size of shoe boxes. The old 64 Rocket was hot. Pop bought a Rickenbacker.' The B side 'Watch Out' is actually the tune that started the whole thing between Big Crown and 79.5. Years ago Kate Mattison who was then performing as Mattison came to Soul Fire studios to record some of her demos, this is how her music got on our radar. Some years after that Danny Akalepse picked up the 'Watch Out' 45 she had pressed independently in a record shop and fell in love with the tune. When we started Big Crown she was one of the first people we called up to see what she was up to. Her answer was 79.5. 'Watch Out' is a warning to a man who is with the wrong woman set over lush keys and a spacious arrangement."

SHACKS, THE Audrey (Spending All My Time With You)/Fly Fishing 7"
"Before the release of their debut album, we are dropping one more 45 with a newly recorded version of 'Audrey Hepburn,' a tune off their self-titled EP from 2016 and 'Fly Fishing', a B side exclusive to this single. For most of 2017, The Shacks have been honing their skills as a live band playing in and around NYC as well as opening for bands like Chicano Batman and Khurangbin. Some of their studio creations which favor the soft, dream pop side of their repertoire, have been reworked for the live show setting. 'Audrey Hepburn (Spending All My Time)' is an example of that. When we first heard their reworked version at a gig in Brooklyn, we called them the next day and asked them to cut to tape the way they had switched it up for the live set. The result is this catchy single, so strong we had to press a 45 for it. The B Side, 'Fly Fishing' is one of many tracks The Shacks have sitting in the vault. Constantly writing and recording, the group has amassed a huge catalog of music. 'Fly Fishing' starts out with a raucous syncopated intro dropping into a floaty groove The Shacks are known for. It's also their drummer's grandma's favorite song."

SUNNY & THE SUNLINERS Smile Now, Cry Later CD
"When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. Born and raised in San Antonio, where he still resides, Sunny became a star right out of high school in the late '50s and hasn't looked back in the six decades since. After releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal. As a logical next step after Big Crown's excellent (and Sunny-approved) Mr. Brown Eyed Soul compilation from September, the label has started digging into the vaults of Sunny's Key-Loc Records label to unearth some legit soul classics -- which are hard to find even in San Antonio, and clean originals will cost you a pretty penny if you ever luck into one -- and have not been on vinyl since the late '60s. Each has been remastered and includes original album art. First up is Smile Now, Cry Later, a 12-song platter which first hit in 1966. As with most Sunny LPs, this is a mix of soulful originals -- most notably, 'Smile Now, Cry Later' and 'Put Me In Jail' -- and provocative, wide-ranging covers. Cases in point on the tributes side of this great album include the Sam & Dave shouter 'Hold On I'm Comin''; 'Forever,' made famous by both the Marvelettes and Marvin Gaye, and a song that Sunny performs to this day; and the '60s Louis Prima crooner special 'Just A Gigolo.' The band is tight, the sound is honest, the vocals are dusky and deep, and the album is an undeniable soul and Texas music classic, ready to be discovered by a whole new generation of music fans. Dive in and be ready for a permasmile, thanks to that patented Sunny sound."

KALMA, ARIEL French Archives 1977-80 4LP BOX
Another indispensable compendium of the great French experimental artist's musical opera. With this four-LP box set of fully unreleased archival materials, Ariel Kalma ideally retraces the map of his own path and spiritual journey during the '70s. Some of music contained in Sarasvati Planet Ariel, Planet Air, Ascend Descend, and Astral Cathedral are born as sound environments for group therapy sessions that carrying healing, trance, and relaxation. The occult and arcane music of Kalma awakens consciousness, expands chakras, sculpts memory indelibly, appears to encompass all the emotional aspects of the universe, and brings its listeners back to the archetypal moments of creation. What is most impressive is the variety of atmospheric stimuli, the rich source of inspiration and compositional mastery. The solemn, triumphal and liturgical, meditative and ascending tone of celestial chapel organs and harmonium, the darkness of Farfisa and Yamaha PS-30 lunar and spectral sequences, the exotic oriental breath of circular dances transfigured and dissolving by the specular shapes of the Wasp Synth... everything converges to the purity abyssal of eternity sound. The melodic and harmonic phrases of sax always reveal a deep song, while the solar blow of flute gives elegiac moments of Debussyian flavor as bucolic recalls of fauns from Eden's lost. Listeners will be struck by equinoxial and solstitial lights, in perfect balance between flares and shadows, nature and galactic procession. Kalma's sensitive ear is expressionist, almost a possible scenario for astral architectural utopias of visionaries such as Hablik, Taut, Steiner, or Poelzig; it absorbs and re-reads in a personal way some insights of the cosmic psychedelia of the early '70s such as K. Schulze, Heldon, Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh. The music is fully unreleased, with only a few tracks being different versions of previously released tracks.

MONK, THELONIOUS Genius Of Modern Music Vol. 2 10"
2015 reissue from Blue Note Records' 75th Anniversary Vinyl Initiative series. Originally released in 1952. "The second volume in this two-disc series displays Thelonious Monk coming into his own fully as a leader. The program consists almost entirely of original compositions, and in fact it opens with two of his most difficult: 'Four in One' (with its conventional bop intro that leads into a bizarre, repeated five-against-two quintuplet sequence) and the forbiddingly abstract 'Criss Cross.' Get through those and you'll eventually be rewarded with the relatively straightforward, blues-based 'Straight No Chaser' and the sweet ballad 'Ask Me Now,' among other treats. Sidemen include the young trumpeter Kenny Dorham and bassist Al McKibbon, as well as a more clued-in Art Blakey and (replacing Blakey on half of the program) Max Roach. Sahib Shihab's sax tone is more appropriate this time out, and the production quality is somewhat better. This disc, along with Volume 1, belongs in every jazz collection." --Rick Anderson, All Music

MCLEAN, JACKIE Capuchin Swing LP
2015 reissue from Blue Note Records' 75th Anniversary Vinyl Initiative series. "One of Jackie McLean's more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960's Capuchin Swing finds the bebop alto saxophonist in fine form on a mix of covers and originals. While his future fascination with Ornette Coleman's free-form innovations can be sensed in some of the solos here, the majority of the album is in a classic hard bop vein. Like contemporaries Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, and Lee Morgan, though, McLean doesn't just churn out pat jam-session fare, but comes up with consistently provocative charts and solos. Eschewing ballads, McLean focuses on mid- to fast-tempo swingers and blues. Standouts include originals like 'Francisco' and 'Condition Blue' and choice renditions of 'Just for Now' and 'Don't Blame Me.' McLean enlists a sparkling lineup of hard bop stars, including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. Mitchell particularly impresses, matching many of McLean's own inspired flights with his supple and progressive playing. Along with other fine Blue Note titles like Jackie's Bag and Bluesnik, Capuchin Swing makes for a great introduction to McLean's extensive catalog." -- Stephen Cook, All Music

FOREVER PAVOT La Pantoufle LP
LP version. You might know Émile Sornin as the son, the pupil, who saw fathers of his among the pioneers of baroque, progressive, and psychedelic pop; who found big brothers by heart and aesthetics in Aquaserge; the (nearly) solitary creator of the "fine retro-maniac piece of work" (The Drone), Rhapsode, in 2014 (BORNBAD 066CD/LP). After experiences in metal, garage, hip hop, he had spent a lot of time exploring, mixing together, digging, getting to the roots with the seriousness of a young man on a quest for territories to occupy. An insatiable jack-of-all-trades, he directed delirious videos for Dizzee Rascal or Disclosure when he wasn't combing the countryside to discover new instruments -- the movie Le Bon Coin Forever (2016). Here is Émile Sornin the (new) father, the dubbed artist, the one-man-studio fully aware of his essential influences (French '70s movie soundtracks -- Philippe Sarde, François De Roubaix, Francis Lai -- rather than Italian giallo soundtracks, synth pioneers such as Wendy Carlos or Mort Garson, library music à la Camille Sauvage, Claude Vasori, and Roger Roger); the captain of a dense, tight live band. The man called by producer Sebastian to the bedside of -- scoop -- Charlotte Gainsbourg's next album. The man who just gave birth to La Pantoufle. From shore to shore, Émile Sornin incorporated into his music the humor and self-mockery he didn't dare to embrace in the past. He dropped English to explore sideways his mother tongue, the tongue that says "ça lance", "ça m'est égal", and "c'est pas si dégueu". He unleashed his instrumental eloquence -- more obsessive than ever arrangement-wise, more jazz and nervous execution-wise, not balking at any dramatic effect to seize the listener's perceptions. Most importantly, he drew on his own memories and blanks ("La Pantoufle Dans Le Puits", "La Soupe À La Grolle", "Les Groseilles Au Fond Du Jardin") to give rise to suspense, fiction, and interpretations. Built as an imaginary movie in which genres collide from one scene to the next (crime film, romance, comedy, erotica, slasher -- you name it), La Pantoufle draws on childhood joys and terrors, only to reenchant them. This is how Forever Pavot takes on its role as a "Father", laying the foundations for a bright future.

JENSEN INTERCEPTOR & ASSEMBLER CODE 6th Element 12"
6th Element is Jensen Interceptor's newest release with frequent collaborator Assembler Code. "2231" is an evil acid stomper with haunting metallic hits strongly rooted in the likes of Skinny Puppy and early Noise Unit. The title track is both the deepest and most frenzied, with a tension and release arrangement built for the dancefloor. "Runner" is a proper title for a track in which the breakbeat and acid line never stops going and your body can't either. "FM Expander" takes an interesting approach to reductionism, with a Jersey club kick pattern keeping time for sparse, bit-crushed percussion.

Dagored presents a double LP bundle of two first official Piero Umiliani reissues. Africa from Piero Umiliani's M. Zalla moniker, originally released in 1972, and Continente Nero, released under Umiliani's own name in 1975. The double LP bundle contains inserts with liner notes for each release; Edition of 500.From the liner notes for Africa, curated by Stefano Gilardino: ". . . Keep in mind the release year, January 1972, before approaching the matter covered in this precious jewel: the black rhythm of the incredible 'Africa To-Day', the 'fourth world' Jon Hassell-style of 'Green Dawn', the 'exotic' touch à la Martin Denny ('Lonely Village', 'Echos'), the 'Sortilège''s reference to the electronic new wave (really!), the folk influence ('Rite', 'Folk-Tune'). With many years in advance, Umiliani synthesizes in Africa sounds and styles that will make then the fortune of well-celebrated and famous artists. . . ."From the liner notes for Continente Nero, curated by Luca Collepiccolo: ". . . The African continent rebuilt in 'microsolchi' by maestro Umiliani in 1975 is therefore a projection, an image that is influenced strongly by the affairs of overseas colleagues. All those artists from Duke Ellington to the Art Ensemble of Chicago, through Max Roach, who have been fundamental in the genesis of African-American culture . . . Over 40 years since its conception, it is a remarkable, pioneering work, a place of hypotheses and happy intuitions. . . ."

SOLARFLARES, THE Psychedelic Tantrum LP
"Britpop? Monged out berks in kagouls peddling poor rehashes of Rutles tunes and/or a lone JB beat? *blows raspberry* Meanwhile, down in Kent, 'tween 1999 and 2003, much more interesting tuneage was afoot. Former Prisoners/Prime Movers cohorts The SolarFlares had further distilled the myriad pleasures of hard-edged, soulful 60s beat-psych, powerhouse guitar/organ instrumentals, and world class (but never wanky) riffage into a classy package, replete with memorable, groove-heavy tunes with knockout harmonies and that big, bad beat. It's fair to say that messrs Graham Day (guitar, vocals), Allan Crockford (bass, vocals), Wolf Howard (drums, vocals) and, latterly, Parsley (organ, vocals) deserve more acclaim, even from diehard fans of The Prisoners and their many other combos, which is where these three most welcome reissues come in... Psychedelic Tantrum, originally issued by Anglo-German label Twist in 1999, is an invigorating, intoxicating mix of suss and strut, hitting yer lugholes running with the searing 'Mary' and running through the dancefloor-friendly instro 'Apollo Go-Go' to the tripped-out 'Shadow of the Past' and a mighty take on The Misunderstood's 'Find a Hidden Door'. To say it's quite a debut is a bit of an understatement, and as with the rest of their output, it sounds gloriously rich and timeless, like it could have been recorded at any point since late-1966..."

SOLARFLARES, THE That Was Then... And So Is This LP
That Was Then... And So Is This, their sophomore set, came out on Twist in 2000 and features less gloriously distorto production but don't let that fool ya into thinking it's a slouch -- no sir. The album's expanded, richer and more defined (dare I say, cinematic?) sonic palette encompasses kinetic acoustic riffery ('Miles Away'), fuzztastic beaters ('Sucking Out My Insides') and the obvs Gerry Anderson-inspired ('Angel Interceptor') - tis a stone pleasure, indeed!"

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Upheaval LP
LP version. On their third album, Upheaval, Mythic Sunship take their deepest dive yet. Their own brand of wobbly boogie doom reaches new dimension of pure Sabbath-like proportions. Yet there's also a new state of re-fined inner space. Mythic Sunship don't only know how to let it rip and let loose -- they are also masters of knowing when to turn down and zone out. The restless, manic beat of Frederik Denning rides on a dense blanket of fuzz from Rasmus Cleve's bass. This rhythm section flows the ground for epic stoner sagas. Leaving ample space for the fuzzy, shimmering, and downright crushing dual guitar excursions of Emil Thorenfeldt and Kasper Stougaard. Upheaval is the apex of the band's journey so far. Mythic Sunship sounds mature and unified like never before on this set, but also maintaining their raw searching edge. It's a culmination and refinement of their idea: the ethos of free jazz in a doom setting.

FUTURIANS Distorted Living LP
"Clayton Noone (aka CJA) has been cranking oddball noise out of Dunedin since before your mom even heard of the town. The same goes for Beth Dawson (aka Ducklingmonster) and Pat Kraus (aka Kraus), who co-founded this sci-fi-punk-astro-juggernaut back in 2001. They invited Clayton to join right away. Kraus left soon after, to be replaced by Jason Aldridge (aka ISO-12) and Sean Norling (aka Rocko Mandroid), although he still hangs around and his head actually pops up on this very LP. I guess the concept of distorted living has too strong a pull on his brain. Regardless of the fact that Clayton runs several labels, most notably the very long-lived Root Don Lonie for Cash, this appears to be only the second album-length vinyl offering Futurians have thus far done. There have been more than a few amazing cassettes and CDRs and lathes, but this is really only LP #2 (unless I am very confused). Not sure why more labels have not jumped onto the Futurians bandwagon over the last 17 years, but hey, we can't all have the wisdom of Spock. Distorted Living is a flat-out hoseload of cosmic gas from its first grunt 'til its last. Shorthanders will be tempted to describe it as 'Mu Mesons play Hawkwind' or something. And while that is not completely off-base, it only captures certain aspects of the very specially spaced weirdness this band conveys. Knowing their visuals solely from their packaging and YouTube, I can only say that they look like they'd pass for great space hippies on a late period episode of the original Star Trek. And the way they compress the psychedelic thrust of their sonics makes one think this whole album may have been recorded in an air lock. One customer at the store, hearing the test pressing, asked 'Is that lasers?' And while we made fun of him for not knowing that lasers are silent, later, as we listened more, we realized that if some sentient lasers decided to start a band it would probably sound a whole lot like Futurians. Which is the very nature of Distorted Living. Something, which if you are wise, you are about to experience first-hand. Welcome aboard." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

SEARCH, JEROEN Endless Circles EP 12"
After solemnly closing out the SPC-series in 2016, Jeroen Search hands in his second EP of the year for Figure. These tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for, perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers. The A-side features big and beefy beats, their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through. The rugged but undeniable groove of "Steady Pulse" stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. The jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of "Endless Circles" seems like the odd one out, but it unexpectedly merges into an intricate mesh of sounds.

PRODIGY H.N.I.C. 2LP
"When it comes to authentic, ride-or-die hip-hop, few crews have as much resonance as Mobb Deep. Featuring two double-threat MCs who also produced -- Havoc and the sadly-departed Prodigy -- the crew changed the hardcore rap game in 1995 with their sophomore classic The Infamous, and went on to rule the dark corners of hip-hop for the second half of the 90s and well into the 2000s. After multiple Mobb Deep platters in the '90s, Prodigy entered the 2000s as a solo artist with force, rolling over a stomping, piano-freaked backdrop laced by producer The Alchemist, with 'Keep It Thoro.' It has held up over time, proving itself as an anthemic classic that the streets and clubs still respect. Flaunting a smooth-but-menacing flow, Prodigy's no-nonsense lyricism on 'Keep It Thoro' is prototypical modern age brag rap. Countless MCs have followed his flow, from Fabolous to Joey Bada$$. The song is short and sweet, clocking in at just over three minutes. There are no wasted verses, just hardcore rhymes that stay with you. But 'Thoro' was the tip of the iceberg on what proved to be one of the more coveted rap full-lengths of the era. The album boasted other charting singles, including 'Rock Dat Shit' and 'Y.B.E.' (featuring B.G.), but it can be argued that the album's real gems are buried deeper. 'Genesis,' 'What U Rep' (featuring Noreaga) and 'Three' are all sinister yet pensive. 'Wanna Be Thugs' and 'Delt With The Bullshit' are strong and evocative Mobb Deep cuts, featuring production and vocals by Havoc. And alongside other standouts, perhaps the deepest cut of all -- especially in light of Prodigy's way-too-soon passing due to complications from Sickle Cell Anemia -- is 'You Can Never Feel My Pain,' which details the health issues and challenges this talented MC and producer had been facing his whole life. H.N.I.C. was Prodigy's first solo album, but it is perhaps his best. Among fans he will never be forgotten, for his skills, his storytelling and his no-B.S. approach to the art of MCing."

PERRY & THE FULL EXPERIENCE, LEE Disco Devil 12"
"For the new year, your friends at Get On Down bring you a beautiful package of roots reggae weirdness from the almighty Upsetter: Lee 'Scratch' Perry. This 12" single features the song 'Disco Devil,' recorded by the legendary Jamaican mad genius with the group The Full Experience, as a version of Max Romeo's 'Chase the Devil.' But don't jump to conclusions based on the song title -- musically this is as far as you can get from Saturday Night Fever. Thick, reverb-drenched dub/roots reggae laced with Perry's dusted vocals and brilliant work behind the boards are on the menu throughout. This cut is undeniably underrated in Perry's catalog and fans will eat this up, since it has always been hard to find on 7" and 12" for many years now."

DIRTMUSIC Bu Bir Ruya LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Includes download code. "We need music like this to stay sane." --Murat ErtelDirtmusic return for their fifth album, a full-scale collaboration with Turkish-psych visionary Murat Ertel from Baba Zula. Recorded in Istanbul, the album navigates hypnotic rhythms, cinematic atmospheres and dark political realities. The striking figure of Murat Ertel is standing at the door of his home studio, a converted mechanic's garage in a suburb of Istanbul. The Turkish capital is a tense and conflicted place these days, but Baba Zula's leader and saz man is on fine form. Before him stand those current and former musical nomads, Chris Eckman and Hugo Race, guitars in hand. Dirtmusic are about to take on their latest, and perhaps most thrilling form. Originally a straight-talking, mainly acoustic trio mining blues and country for 21st century gold, the band's first happy accident was to stumble upon Tamikrest at the fabled Festival au Désert in Timbuktu in 2008. In the meantime, however, the Islamist takeover of Northern Mali in 2012 had darkened the sound and the songwriting, giving them a tone that continues to resonate through the new record. The opening track, "Bi De Sen Söyle", is a statement of intent, musically and lyrically: shared vocals that mass in urgent call-and-response, the psychedelic grip of Ertel's saz, which barely leaves the record for a second, and percussion from Ümit Adakale that tells you that this is music for clubs and parties as much as for private spaces. It shares this with "The Border Crossing", the prime slice of Pop Group-inflected postpunk-funk that follows it. It's a questing, restless record for the head, but perhaps more so for the body. It broods throughout, as post-punk, Turkish psych, funk, rock and electronics stalk the grooves with widescreen intent -- listen to 'Safety In Numbers', for example, an instant classic that sees Race in imperious form, or "Love Is A Foreign Country", which features a startling appearance by Gaye Su Akyol, a treat for those who loved her Hologram ?mparatorlu?u (GB 040CD/LP, 2016). Personnel: Hugo Race - vocals, guitars, bass, loops, programming; Chris Eckman - vocals, guitars, loops, kalimba; Murat Ertel - vocals, electric saz, divan saz, ba?lama rhythm machine; Ümit Adakale - darbuka, davul, bendir, percussion. Also features Gaye Su Akyol, Brenna Mac Crimmon, and Görkem ?en.

MHYSA Fantasii LP
Mhysa is in possession of a totally compelling voice and production style, both feeding into a sound that's prone to intuitively explore and reassert the limits of R&B, electronica, or modern soul in 2017. She makes a big impression with fantasii, her first album proper following dispatches with NON and a lauded mixtape alongside chukwumaa as SCRAAATCH. Think Klein's freeform R&B structures riddled with Rabit-like production tics, and you're in grasping distance of the fractious but idiosyncratically coherent styles inhabited by this highly intriguing addition to the vanguard of new music from the fertile margins of American music. Against a refreshing general lack of broken glass or gunshot samples, the self-described "Black queer femme cultural producer, sound designer, womanist + Diva" animates swirling, impossibly balanced structures with a tearaway imagination, keening from vaulted, pitch-shifting gospel in "Special Need Intro" to a multi-dimensional, abstract grime cover of Prince in the course of 11 songs. The Klein comparisons are apt, the pair share a unique perception of R&B and church music as a gateway to other, dreamlike dimensions. From the way Mhysa appropriates the ecclesiastic psychedelia of physical church spaces in the reverb-storm of "Glory Be Black" to the rugged ambient inversion of R&B's usual warmth in the six-minute highlight "Bb", or undermining the conventions of club music in the A-grade anti-bangers "Strobe" and "You Not About That Lyfe", she offers a particular example of the contemporary, young, Black, and queer experience. No doubt, fantasii is a vital addition to the canon of boundary pushing and resetting music and politics also espoused by Elysia Crampton, Rabit, ANGEL-HO, or Chino Amobi -- one of 2017's most rewarding albums. RYLANDER, HENRIK Fran En Obestamd Plats I Rummet LP
Originally released on CD in 1998. Like a message in a bottle, carried round by the ocean streams for decades, Henrik Rylander's album Från En Obestämd Plats I Rummet has floated around in the space of Swedish underground music. Höga Nord Rekords pulls the cork and unfolds the message that is a piece of music that was ahead of its time, sounding "now" 20 years after its first release in the late nineties. This album is a well-kept secret even for the most initiated music lovers in Sweden. The music, influenced by Flying Saucer Attack and other reverb/distortion drenched acts from the early nineties, Harmonia, and some of Kraftwerk's earlier works and minimalism, still sounds fresh. Rylander, a member of legendary acts such as Union Carbide Productions and The Skull Defekts, has been pushing the envelope for electronic music, varying between ambient and noise. Rylander's solo works could be described as sophisticated music and Från En Obestämd Plats I Rummet combines the sophisticated sides with his band-oriented works that hold another kind of tension. This record is the first release on the sub label Höga Nord Arkiv on which releases from the past, that haven't got as much attention as they deserve, get re-released in an appropriate context.

MONTI, MARIA Il Bestiario LP
Black vinyl repress. Holidays Records present a reissue of Maria Monti's Il Bestiario, originally released in 1974. Maria Monti's legendary Il Bestiario is a prime example of the avant-garde art-song of the 1970s. Known for her renderings of Italian popular songs, Maria Monti is an Italian singer and actress with a noteworthy career: cabaret singer in the '60s, ambitious avant-garde folk artist in the '70s, and starring in films by directors as such as Sergio Leone -- Fistful Of Dynamite (1971) -- and Bernardo Bertolucci -- 1900 (1976). Il Bestiario is a near perfect emblem of the fascinating territory gained through collaboration. It enlisted the radical poet Aldo Braibanti as its lyricist, features arrangements and synthesizer from Alvin Curran (Musica Elettronica Viva), the baritone saxophone of Roberto Laneri (Prima Materia), as well as the soprano saxophone of jazz legend Steve Lacy. The result is absolutely stunning, musically unique within the respective outputs of its participants' long and noted careers. Unquestionably one of the most beautiful and neglected albums of its decade. Comes with a 16-page booklet with lyrics and translations.

CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING Schafe Statt Geigen / "Verena" Vogelzymphon LP
"I have worked together with sheep before", says Henning Christiansen, introducing the performance he did in front of the Brucknerhaus in Linz in July 1988. But this time he went beyond, building a "Concert-Castle" with hay blocks where thirty sheep could perform music. Another time the animals -- Christiansen's obsession and passion -- become the musical instruments used for his compositions: "Originally most of instrumental sounds derived from animal voices or other sounds of natural phenomena. The violins, for instance: someone found out that stretched intestines, dried bowels, could produce a sound. This has simply been civilized, refined." "Schafe Statt Geigen" ("Sheep Instead of Violins", 1988) and ""Verena" Vogelzymphon" ("Bird Symphony", 1990) first appeared as a small CD edition issued by Galerie Bernd Klüser in 1991. Both works, each one occupying a full side of this LP edition, are an extension of one of Christiansen's long standing conceptual strategies: deploying recordings of animals as stand-ins for musical instruments, sheep and birds respectively. While each work allows these sources to take the natural lead, at times masquerading as field recordings, both feature subtle tonal and electronic interventions by the composer, creating strange and brilliant compositions which shift the terms and subjects of music as they were long understood. "The background, the space where music happens is what I want to put into the foreground." Accompanied by a twenty-page booklet featuring drawings and texts by Henning Christiansen, as well as pictures of the performance by René Block. Edition of 500.

MIGHTY DIAMONDS Leaders Of Black Countries LP
LP version. The Mighty Diamonds are one of the most famous vocal groups to come out of the Jamaican reggae scene. Their perfect harmonies ride over the wholesome and Garveyite influenced lyrics to such great effect that they will always evoke memories of that time and place, but also like all great music, it never seems to date. The Mighty Diamonds consist of Donald 'Tappy' Shaw (lead vocals), Fitzroy 'Bunny' Simpson, and Lloyd 'Judge' Ferguson providing those fantastic harmonies. They began their recording career working with producers Stranger Cole and Rupie Edwards but found their breakthrough success with producer Joseph 'Joe Joe' Hookim at the legendary Channel One Studios recording "Hey Girl" and covering two foreign tunes, namely "Country Living" by The Stylistics and "Stoned Out Of Mind" by The Chi-lites, which suited their vocal styles perfectly. The vocal group also cut tracks with other famous producers of the time Joe Gibbs, Gussie Clarke, and Tappa Zukie of which are a focus on this release on. These tunes work perfectly with harmonies, weaving together and lifting the songs to another level. The group also leave some room for a history lesson in the shape of "Morgan The Pirate" and the thought provoking "Do You Want To Spend Your Time Wasting Time". Waste no more and enjoy this set by one of Jamaica's finest vocal groups. "Pirates (DJ Version)" features Tullo T.

TZUSING Debut CD
One-time only CD printing of Tzusing's breakout debut album, originally released on vinyl in 2017. Featuring all the tracks on the LP, this CD version includes a bonus track, "Catergory III". One of our most sought after L.I.E.S. releases of 2017, and rightfully so. After three stand-out EPs over the last three years for L.I.E.S., Tzusing delivers his debut LP for the label. Here are seven tracks of precisely-crafted electronics, unmistakably taking the artist's signature industrial-fueled sound and opening it up to a new dimension far beyond the typical metal beat clang. Emotional, dark, and powerful, the album title taken literally means "Invincible East" based on a character (a swordsman) in a Jin Yong novel that makes the ultimate sacrifice to attain knowledge and transform. The narrative goes in hand with the artist's observations living and traveling throughout Asia, and provides a haunting soundtrack for a bleak future where few dare to subvert the power structures at hand.

2018 repress. Originally released in 1969, this album is one of the most significant in Brazilian musical history, spearheading the musical Tropicalia revolution lead by Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, not to mention Gal Costa and mutant rockers Os Mutantes. Not only were the artists experimenting with the music, they were also making a very strong political statement that spoke out very harshly against the military regime in Brazil at the time. This album helped land Veloso and Gil a brief stint in jail and eventually in political exile in the UK. Includes bonus CD of the album.

MATERIAL OBJECT Alive01 CD
Material Object, presents his first true (if such a term exists) live performance. True in the sense of being generated instinctively in the moment from resampled chunks of previous output sandwiched between unheard waveforms from a distant future whilst underwritten by voltage controlled rumblings from actual synthesizers than can be seen and touched and wrecked by roadies. Traversing known knowns and unknown knowns from drone to drone. Harvesting new and slightly less new artifacts of the digitaux variety and crash landing in the ghetto of the lysergic jungles visited by G@ng5tas of yesteryear, all for your personal enjoyment. Performed live at the Red Rattler in Sydney, Australia on April 16th, 2017 for the Strange Signals / House of Mince crews, the performance is slightly more than just the insane ejaculations of an unhinged mind, but a true insight into one of the Internet's least popular Twitter accounts.

VA Sounds of Sisso 2LP
Pure Singeli fire from Tanzania's febrile Dar Es Salaam underground, showcasing the punkish sounds of the Sisso Records studio with a belter volley of hi-velocity missiles for Kampala, Uganda's Nyege Nyege Tapes. Hitting frenetic levels of velocity comparable with full on soca or Shangaan electro styles as much as Northern British takes on happy hardcore and Makina, trust there's no messing about with this one. This is a bracing first introduction to the Singeli sound, whose collision of souped-up rhythmic energy and breathless bars should immediately translate far beyond its east African base. Across the 14 tracks of Sounds of Sisso you're familiarized with the sound's core producers -- Bwax, Sisso, Tampa Pana, and Yung Keyz Morento -- and its amazing fast chat MCs -- Dogo Niga (aka Bobani) and Makaveli -- with a totally uncompromising style that can't help but make most other dance music sound a bit pale and limp by comparison. No matter where you're from, this is patently music for raving to, combining punkish, satirical lyrics about the challenges of Tanzania's youth -- from police corruption to dating when you're broke -- with productions that scream get mad get mad in a way that's maybe best associated with hedonistic noise or gabber. However, this is from Dar Es Slaam, and they've got some heavy style down there. From the near cheek-pulling G-force of Bwax and S Kide's "Baba Aminata Natafuta Kiki" to the mental, cut-up intro and rapido attack of "TMK" by Suma, nobody lets the pressure gauge tick below fucking off it, pal, taking in the chipmunked Bollywood chorus and speecore pace of Dogo Niga's "Polisi" and the Shangaan/Soca-like hybrid "Mshamba Wa Kideo" from Mzee Wa Bwax or the Nu Monkey-on-tour styles of "Kimbau Mbau" along with the Nkisi-esque jag of Maseke, Pasopa and Mako's "Roho Inauma". But, there are also some sweeter and hip hop styled freaks, too; check for the warped hip hop knock of "Nammiliki" from Makaveli, or the sugar-rush of Csso's "Shobo" and the hyper colourful soundsystem FX of "Ndugulawama". Also features Dogo Suma Lupozi, Dogo Mudiy, Ganzi Mdudu. Remastered and cut by Matt Colton.

Oceanvs Orientalis drops a similarly exciting re-rub, finding new angles and dimensions to the track "Baris". Tel Aviv's Red Axes turn up the psychedelia for an amazing dissection of "Ayam" -- deep sounds immersed in acidic tones and tight-yet-wonky arrangements. M.E.S.H. Hesaitix LP
Further departing from both the cinematic abstraction of Piteous Gate (PAN 066CD/LP, 2015) and the hectic drums of Damaged Merc (2016), Berlin producer M.E.S.H.'s new full-length, Hesaitix, is marked by its hyper-ornamented rhythms and a sense of pensive, moonlit spaces. The atmosphere has shifted; the radical deconstruction of previous releases has given way to subtler interventions, building new structures in strange territories. Shifting from the meditative to states of manic unease, Hesaitix is an unnerving injection into both the social space of club music and the interior space of digital audio fantasy. "How did I become so stupid? A sound can be both formless and over-rendered, like a boneless but fleshy hand from a life drawing class. What agent could set these broken sounds in motion? A laugh behind an evil curtain. A drummer that's cool and grotesque, a detuned siren. A brushfire under a full moon." Recorded in Berlin and Umbria, Hesaitix sees Janus resident and PAN staple M.E.S.H. firmly engaged in a kind of sonic world building, a place where the unconscious and the alien intersect. Artwork by Michael Guidetti and James Whipple. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

With Sun Dog Trail, Alex merged several inspirations; Firstly, the influence of experimental electronic music, and more specifically a tribute to Bernard Parmegiani. Secondly, the influence of the blues with musicians like John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. The end result is an experience that combines Bazin's usual musical fusions with experimental and blues forms, taking the listener on multiple adventurous journeys. U ROY The Originator CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of U Roy's The Originator, originally released in 1990. Ewart Beckford, aka Daddy U Roy, changed the focus of Jamaican popular music by turning the sound system deejay from an incidental figure that told jokes in between records and made announcements about where the next dance would be held, to a major star whose rhyming toasts were as important as the lyrics for any singer. U Roy's command on the microphone on sets like Dickies Dynamic and Sir George the Atomic paved the way for his influential residency on King Tubby's Hi Fi. Keith Hudson, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Bunny "Striker" Lee were some of the first producers to bring him into the studio, but the breakthrough hits came for Duke Reid in 1970, with Roy toasting over old rock steady rhythms. Work for Prince Tony subsequently brought him international fame through a contract with Virgin, but he continued to record grassroots efforts at home. The Originator gathers some of the greatest tracks U Roy cut for Striker, voiced as usual at King Tubby's studio over hot hits by Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell, Gregory Isaacs, and others; "King Tubby's Skank" celebrates Tubby himself.

Includes a bonus DVD (packaged with exclusive artwork) of Caroline de Bendern's 1971 film à l'intention de Mlle Issoufou à Bilma, documenting this amazing African journey. "In 1970 Barney Wilen assembled a team of filmmakers, technicians, and musicians to travel to Africa for the purpose of recording the music of the native pygmy tribes. Upon returning to Paris two years later, he created Moshi, a dark, eccentric effort fusing avant jazz sensibilities with African rhythms, ambient sound effects, and melodies rooted in American blues traditions. Cut with French and African players including guitarist Pierre Chaze, pianist Michel Graillier, and percussionist Didier Leon, this is music with few precedents or followers, spanning from extraterrestrial dissonance to earthbound, street-legal funk. Wilen pays little heed to conventional structure, assembling tracks like 'Afrika Freak Out' and 'Zombizar' from spare parts of indeterminate origins." --Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

HELDON Un Reve Sans Consequence Speciale LP
Souffle Continu Records present a reissue of Heldon's Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale, originally released on Cobra in 1976. In Heldon, nobody particularly likes liner notes. However, although the group's albums have none, they abound, from the very beginning, with clues and often cryptic references. The name of the group, obviously, comes from a science fiction novel by Norman Spinrad, but perhaps it is less well known that the title of the album Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale is taken from a pirate recording of King Crimson made in 1974, an elegant way to state the possible lineage between guitarist (and synthesizer player) Richard Pinhas and Robert Fripp, his peer in the British band. Likewise, Richard Pinhas values the philosophers Lyotard, Nietzsche, and Deleuze, and the cover of Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale quotes theology specialist Pierre Klossowski, according to whom all creators owe it themselves to provoke a "state of insecurity straying from the oppressive regime of mediocrity". Having been a precursor of the home studio, Richard Pinhas came to the Davout studios to record the fifth Heldon album Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale. He had a special space reserved for him, where there was a Moog 3 which had belonged to Paul McCartney. Intense, violent, bitter, abrasive, uncompromising: the first on-site recording is in keeping with the four predecessors, prefiguring both industrial- and post-rock, showing once again that the early references to "guerrilla electronics" (and to William S. Burroughs) were not in vain. The newcomers to this universe, bassist Didier Batard (Coeur Magique, Triptyque), on one track, and drummer François Auger (heard on the fifth album by Gérard Manset) finally transform Heldon into a fiery power trio for the inspired "MVC II". Without forgetting that the faithful Patrick Gauthier is also on board, as is Jannick Top (Magma), each on one track. Listening to the result it is easy to understand why Merzbow, Wolf Eyes, and Oren Ambarchi, in the 2000s wanted to record with Richard Pinhas. It must also be noted that the often-made comparison between Heldon/Richard Pinhas and King Crimson/Robert Fripp, while still pertinent, if insufficient, as Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale breaks much new ground beyond those horizons. High quality mastering from Richard Pinhas's original masters; Licensed from Richard Pinhas. Obi strip; matte printing. Clear purple vinyl; Edition of 700.

HELDON Heldon . 6 . Interface LP
Souffle Continu Records present a reissue of Heldon's Heldon . 6 . Interface, originally released in 1977. The idea in the mind of Richard Pinhas, the driving force behind Heldon, was to produce music "as cold as a huge block of ice" a vertiginous experience, of course influenced by the King Crimson trilogy, from Larks' Tongues In Aspic (1973) to Red (1974), except that Heldon represents an electrified version, leading to a perfect rapport between thought and emotion, perhaps going even further. It's Only Rock'n'Roll (1975), the appropriately-named third album, is in its own way -- already -- a turning point in Heldon's oeuvre, witness the acid and corrosive "Zind Destruction (Bouillie Blues)". Once the next one was released (Agneta Nilsson, 1976), just after Disjuncta, the first French independent label, had been sold to Urus by Richard Pinhas in order to buy the aforementioned Moog 3 from the Beatles, the music became even more uncompromising. The group delved, like King Crimson, into a kind of trilogy, the middle of which was Interface in 1977, a year after Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale (FFL 034LP) which was, thus, the first part. At this period the group's music, as Gérard N'Guyen wrote in the fanzine Atem, was like "a guided tour through the ruins of a civilisation." In the middle of the punk wave, the universe of Heldon indeed became more threatening and heavy, echoing the novel by Norman Spinrad from which the group took their name, The Iron Dream (1972). This was also the point at which Heldon became a genuine group, centered around Patrick Gauthier (synthesizers), Didier Batard (bass), and François Auger (drums), which allowed Richard Pinhas to focus on the real motivation behind this audacious undertaking. Like its predecessor Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale, and then 1979's Stand By (FFL 036LP) which followed, Interface, the second album of the "trilogy" recorded at studios Davout, represents a sonic culmination, even a climax, its violence coming from the machines and delving into notions of repetition and scansion, prefiguring a lot of the music that was to follow, whether it be electro and industrial or post-rock and noise. It goes without saying: seminal and always innovative! High quality mastering from Richard Pinhas's original masters; Licensed from Richard Pinhas. Obi strip; matte printing. Swamp green vinyl; Edition of 700.

HELDON Stand By LP
Souffle Continu Records present a reissue of Heldon's Stand By, originally released in 1979. Richard Pinhas began by absorbing Jimi Hendrix as an adolescent, leaving that behind at the beginning of the 1970s, after having heard what Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock were doing with synthesizers, and then discovering the seminal duo Fripp and Eno. It was one year on from this epiphany that the first album by Heldon was released (1974). The main idea was to rock and roll on electronic machines. Richard Pinhas was of course playing electric guitar, but was also interested in the A.R.P. and VCS 3, to the point of purchasing the Moog 3 owned by the Beatles. In order to do so, he had to sell of the Disjuncta label -- the first totally independent French label -- he had created in order to release Schizo (1972), Alain Renaud and Heldon. This was the beginning of the 1970s. Heldon had already released four key albums and left their home studio for Davout, beginning a trilogy starting with the sound of 1976's Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale (FFL 034LP), continuing with 1977's Interface (FFL 035LP), and concluding with Stand By. When Stand By was released, the press had already labeled Heldon as the first electric punk group. There is nothing silly in that, Heldon having quickly moved away from the spacey German influences which were not to Richard Pinhas's taste. This can be heard on Stand By, the lynchpin of which is the twenty minutes of sound and fury of "Boléro", something of a high-point from the group which owes much to the sequencers of the "technician" Didier Badez. As on the two previous releases, the ever-faithful Patrick Gauthier, François Auger, and Didier Batard were present. For one track, Klaus Blasquiz sings and highlights the underlying links between Heldon, Magma, and Weidorje, but also a shared past experience in Blues Convention with Richard Pinhas. After two solo albums, East West (1980) and L'Éthique (1982), Richard Pinhas dropped everything, through fear of repeating himself, even selling off some of his equipment, before coming back to center-stage with DWW (1992), following a sabbatical decade centered on philosophy, skiing, and paragliding. Thus, Stand By can be seen as the end of an era for Heldon. High quality mastering from Richard Pinhas's original masters; Licensed from Richard Pinhas. Obi strip; matte printing. Sea blue vinyl; Edition of 700.

HELDON 1976-1979 3LP BOX/7"
1976-1979: four years of intensive creativity for Heldon, following on from them leaving the home-studio on the Île Saint-Louis for Davout also in Paris, where a Moog 3, purchased from the Beatles, was ready in a space reserved for the leader of the group, Richard Pinhas. From here on, a trilogy was created which compares favorably with King Crimson of the period from Larks' Tongues In Aspic (1973) to Red (1974), the French band breaking new ground with the electronics used in their music, and the numerous influences they quote, including Fripp and Eno, Philip K. Dick, and Gilles Deleuze. A totally vertiginous experience, the ensemble consisting of Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale (1976), Interface (1977), and Stand By (1979) can be seen as the sonic climax to Heldon's oeuvre, even its climax, the violence coming from the machines. This Everest of electronic music is completed by a rare single released on RCA at the same period, making this a must-have box set for any self-respecting collector. VA Italia New Wave: Minimal Synth, No Wave, & Post Punk Sounds From The '80s Italian Underground LP
What exactly happened in the Italian underground/post punk scene of the '80s, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps track down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more "national" approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban/suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here's the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation. Features Neon, ?????? (Pankow), Le Masque, N.O.I.A., State Of Art, Jeunesse D'ivoire, Monuments, Rats, Fockewulf 190, Luc Orient, Illogico, 2+2=5, and La Maison.

VA Italia Synthetica 1981-1985 LP+CD
Italia Synthetica 1981-1985 represents the musical mutation that occurred after the post-punk hangover gave way to more frigid emotional shores, in-line with the synth-wave moment that was sweeping Europe and the white cliffs of Albion. This scene flourished in Italy between 1981-1985, and the musicians that came out of it are still revered today (particularly in the US). Robotic rhythms and intuitions that, besides sharing common ground with the electronic movements that had come before, also knew how to fill up the dancefloor. Featuring four previously unreleased tracks by Der Blaue Reiter, along with tracks by Modo, Actor's Studio, and La Maison, as well as the still fresh sounding contributions by true pioneers of the genre Neon and Naif Orchestra. Also features Ein-st-ein, Scortilla, Eurotunes, Oh Oh Art, and 2+2=5 featuring Paolo Mauri. LP includes CD which includes five bonus tracks from the Italia New Wave LP (SPITTLE 031LP). Included CD features Jeunesse D'Ivoire, Fockewulf 190, State Of Art, N.O.I.A., and 2+2=5.

RICHARD SADFACE Sad But True 10"
Richard Sadface was born during a Midsummer's Nightmare on a rooftop in Cologne. He did not become the fiddler on the roof because since his birth he suffered from severe fear of heights. Richard Sadface led a lonely life. Never did he become the dream of someone else. Instead, the thought of him made others turn uncomfortably in their sleep. Never could he claim to be the eyes or the mask of another. The others all looked away. Richard Sadface was a sad man. Richard Sadface by God. Music by Superpitcher.

JAGUWAR Ringthing CD
Jaguwar began life as a trio, formed in Berlin by Oyèmi and Lemmy in 2012. Their drummer Chris signed up in 2014 to complete the current line-up. Thus far they have released two EPs on the US label Prospect Records and have played countless shows in the UK, Denmark, France, Serbia, Germany, and beyond. They have shared the stage with acts like We Were Promised Jetpacks, Japandroids, and The Megaphonic Thrift, resulting in many happy faces and ringing ears. In 2016, they sent a brief e-mail to Tapete Records with music attached, asking to support The Telescopes on tour. Any band keen on supporting The Telescopes was sure to spark the label's curiosity and, before long, the two Jaguwar EPs had become firm favorites at the Tapete office. File under: wall of sound, shoegaze, noise & pop. It is by no means injurious to surmise that My Bloody Valentine have had (and continue to have) some small, yet significant, degree of influence on Jaguwar. In 2017, armed with an impressive array of effect devices, guitars, bass, and amps, backed up by a prodigious supply of coffee and cigarettes, they decamped to the Tritone Studio in the idyllic environs of Hof, Bavaria, to record what would become Ringthing. Typically for the genre, they crafted layer upon sonic layer. No less typically, deadlines were not always adhered to. But it has been well worth the wait: more noise than ever and even more pop. "Noise and detail" is how the band describes their sound. Ringthing is a shimmering, reverberating, crashing monolith of an album. Jaguwar sway from combining saccharine pop with Amphetamine Reptilian noise to sounding like a serendipitous encounter between The Cure and Ride. Prepare to expect the unexpected from their meandering song structures. Successfully unshackled from their paragons, the trio's sui generis sound is destined to be heard all over the world. At thunderous volume!

TIMES, THE This Is London LP+CD
LP version with CD. Tapete present a reissue of The Times' This Is London, originally released in 1983."More than four decades on, with yet another round of punk anniversaries safely behind us, here's a chance to remind ourselves that not everyone believed or indeed peddled the myth of the Year Zero. Maybe that's because they were young enough not to have to prove their youth. A good three years junior to Johnny Rotten and six years to Joe Strummer, Edward Ball had spent his 1960s childhood equally entranced by the Beatles on the radio and Patrick McGoohan playing The Prisoner on TV. And while the promises of a popular culture infused with fresh art school ideas had gone stale by the 1970s, a teenage Ed Ball would recognise the dawning of an independent DIY culture as a chance to rekindle them in a brand new way. To do so he had to bypass the corporate machine, then otherwise busy selling the Year Zero narrative to a gullible media, and set out on an unbeaten path that would soon converge with the leftmost edges of the nascent mod revival. Having formed his first band O-Level in 1976, Ball found a kindred spirit in school friend Daniel Treacy. For a while their bands Television Personalities (fronted by Treacy) and Teenage Filmstars (fronted by Ball) existed in tandem until the latter morphed into The Times. Following a legal dispute around the name of their DIY label Whaam!, obviously monikered after Ray Liechtenstein's 1963 painting as opposed to a certain pop band of the day, Ball launched his band's very own Artpop! imprint. Having released six Times LPs between 1982 and 1986, by the end of the decade Ball reemerged on Alan McGee's Creation Records, delving into electronic psychedelia and supplementing his recording career with a day job as a friendly executive/receptionist at the company's London of office. There he would sit behind a desk in front of one of his own paintings, sometimes speaking dismissively of himself in the third person to unsuspecting visitors. Sometime later, Ball would return to writing observational pop songs destined for the lower reaches of the charts as a fully paid up member of the Mill Hill Self Hate Club. . . . Here is that rarest of things: British guitar pop history without baggage. Because only the best went with The Times back in the early eighties." --Robert Rotifer, Canterbury, 2017

RESTIVE PLAGGONA Silently Hopelessly 2LP
Restive Plaggona release a brand new studio effort -- a full-length album featuring ten original tracks and a remix from Ancestral Voices, with a dark and melancholic twist, as the title of the project might imply. Connected by a commonality of despair, nostalgia and desolation, Restive Plaggona elevated these elements into its maturity. At its core, each track has a soul-stirring significance, and is embalmed by titles that fringes on a political dimension. Opening number "Intimacy Is Violence" does a remarkable job capturing the vibe of the album, serving as a great introduction. The track has a very industrial tone, with a strong cinematic feel to it. The following track, "Rote Zora", follows suit with a more percussive and colorful arrangement, with a more substantial focus on rhythmic patterns. "Cut Off From Modern Society" is a combination of dark atmospheres, lush melodies, and glitchy beats. "Sudden Burst Of Safety" is another excellent track worth mentioning due to its stadium-sized drums and saturated sounds, adding an aggressive feel to the music. All in all, the album is a real sonic journey. Silently Hopelessly marks Restive Plaggona's first LP for Swiss-based record company Thrènes (which takes its name from the Greek word for "funeral lament"), a label dedicated to the release of tenebrous electronica and techno.

Berlin based head of Toy Tonics Kapote is back with three new tracks. He starts with a deep, sample-based 118 bpm house track: "Temptation". Quite similar to the mood of the recent Black Loops or Coeo tracks on Toy Tonics. With the second tune he leaves the usual house 4/4 groves and comes up with a -- 100% sample-free -- jazz house, mid-tempo shaker. Munk plays all the bass and synths on this track. The final track then goes hard into the breakbeat funk corner. The keyboard solo -- a Moog played by Munk again -- is so funked up.

HOLIDAY, BILLIE Billie's Blues LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Billie Holiday's Billie's Blues, originally released as Ladylove in 1962. Though she had been performing professionally since the late 1920s, as a teenager in Harlem during its Renaissance, the immortal Billie Holiday didn't play a single night on the European continent until 1954. It was in that year that the great journalist and musician Leonard Feather and a Swedish promoter organized the Jazz Club U.S.A. tour, named after Feather's wildly popular radio program. Featuring Red Norvo, Sonny Clark, and more, the centerpiece of Jazz Club U.S.A. was, undoubtedly, Lady Day. Recorded at various dates across the tour, Billie's Blues shows Holiday still had it, despite the turmoil, and drug and alcohol abuse, her voice remained strong, a stunning document of one of America's greatest treasures on her first ever tour of Europe. Includes an introduction by Leonard Feather. Reissued here with five bonus tracks.

MEEK, JOE Hits From 304 Holloway Road LP
Though he's been dead for nearly 50 years, Joe Meek remains one of the most fascinating and influential figures in British pop music. A brilliant and prolific producer and songwriter -- despite his inability to either play an instrument or read music -- Meek also happened to be an occultist, paranoiac, suicidal depressive, and, to top it all off, a murderer. Though only 37 at the time of his death Meek left a large body of work rivaled only by his equally inspired/insane competitor across the pond, Phil Spector. This brand new collection on Wax Love brings together 18 of Meek's finest early '60s pop productions back to life on vinyl, the format they were made for. Features performances by John Leyton, Mike Berry & The Outlaws, Geoff Goddard, Neil Christian & The Crusaders, Screaming Lord Sutch, Moontrekkers, Tornados, Danny Rivers, Cliff Bennet & The Rebel Rousers, Michael Cox, Pat Reader, Ian Gregory, Tony Victor, and Carter Lewis & The Southerners.

KING, B.B. Story From My Heart And Soul: The 'Modern' Label Singles 1957-1962 LP
This collection compiles many of the classic '50s and '60s sides that B.B. King recorded for the Los Angeles based label Modern. Mostly recorded in King's home base of Memphis, Tennessee -- some even recorded and produced by Sam Phillips of Sun Records fame -- these sides are some of the most important and classic blues and R&B tracks of the late 1950s and early 1960s. A true workhorse, King was often playing more than 300 concerts a year at this point in his career, and it shows in these performances where a tight band is led by one of the most practiced and technically skilled guitarists of the era. King remains a huge influence on guitarists to this day and these recordings, from nearly 60 years ago, are a perfect example why.

It's hard to imagine, when listening to Cochran's body of work, that one man could record so much classic material in such a brief period of time. Cochran's first solo release came in 1956, and in less than five years he recorded dozens of singles, including seven chart hits in the USA, and a number more in the UK. LOFT Three Settlements Four Ways 12"
Loft debuted on Astral Plane Recordings in 2016 with the Turbulent Dynamics, which featured five stylistically varied slices of experimental, sui generis club music. The EP's center point, "Heffalump", stood out in particular. Three Settlements Four Ways picks up where "Heffalump" left off. Dynamically and structurally, the EP operates miles outside of traditional club territory, eschewing techno's constant, linear structure in favor of unpredictable narratives that rise and falter in a series of dramatic crescendos. Baltimore rhythms and gunshot breaks build to violent peaks before tumbling into thin air, giving way to yearning melodies, romantic synths and pitch bent choirs.
