LAVEY, ANTON SZANDOR The Devil Speaks (& Plays) LP
Limited 2018 repress. Known to the world as the founder of the Church of Satan and author, among other cult esoteric texts, of the Satanic Bible (1969), Anton Szandor LaVey was also a skilled musician with a taste for weird, creepy and old-timey sounding tunes. Presented in this compilation are six of his best recordings and the first ever recording of a satanic mass conducted by the very high priest himself in 1968. A compendium of the words and music of one of the most singular and demonized (and rightfully so) characters pop-culture has ever seen. Let yourself go with the suave and eerie sounds of the satanic empire and hail the dark lord!

VA Naino! Spanish Gipsy Soul Funk Disco, 1974-1984 LP
Naino! Spanish Gipsy Soul Funk Disco, 1974-1984 is a compilation dedicated to the fusion of black music and gipsy music created during the last century in Spain. Adarce Records mainly focus on a breakthrough movement that was started by "rumberos" and "flamencos" by mixing soul, funk, and disco, reaching its maximum splendor in the late seventies. By mixing these genres, all unashamedly executed, musicians were able to explore new sounds and discover links between these two well-known musical traditions, so distant and yet so close. For this compilation, Adarce Records have chosen fourteen of the best songs, all recorded during those times and released between 1974 and 1984. The Spanish interest in soul goes back to the sixties and, fundamentally began with the arrival of Motown and Atlantic records. Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Bee Gees, Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Boney M., Earth Wind & Fire, and many more were released in the 1970s. Enlightened by this music, a group of "flamencos" and "rumberos" started to perform soul, funk and disco in their own way, creating a genuine and unrepeatable musical phenomenon. The aim with this compilation is to illustrate this journey from "calé" music to black music. To do so, Adarce Records have selected tracks released by Belter, DB Belter, Discophon, and Olympo, showing the different stems of this amazing phenomenon. With this fusion, you get danceable music that culminates the passage from tablao to the club. This is evidenced by the fact that several of the songs in this compilation were previously selected for albums like Flamenco Discoteque Vol.2 (Olympo, 1975) or Rumba Pop Discoteca (Belter, 1977). 13 of the 14 tracks on this compilation were released between 1974 and 1980. Features Marian Conde, Juan Bautista, Los Maravilla, Dolores Vargas, Paca Y Manuela, Chele, Lola Flores, Perlita De Huelva, Morena Y Clara, Trigal, Las Deblas, Rumba Tres, Tobago, and Chipén. Remastered from the original tapes (Revox). Liner notes by Oriol Farràs.

SALM Salm: Gaelic Psalms from the Hebrides of Scotland, Volume One LP
The recordings of Gaelic Psalm singing presented in Salm: Gaelic Psalms from the Hebrides of Scotland are among the best ever captured. They document a living tradition, a form of religious singing from the Hebrides in Scotland, which is still practiced in Lewis. In Gaelic psalm singing, a precentor leads, and from here voices follow, moving together in great swells like the murmurations of birds. These recordings of Gaelic Psalm singing were originally made over two evenings in the Back Free Church on the Isle of Lewis in October 2003. The singing was spontaneous and totally unrehearsed. The recordings are now presented on vinyl for the first time by Arc Light Editions. This is music that is transcendent and together, about the individual and the earth, movingly spiritual with or without belief. The sound comes in great waves, swells of sound that break and roll around the space. The texture relies on the individuals: this is group singing where the individual is preserved, elevated, but together. A precentor leads off with the first lines of a psalm, and the congregation follows, some faster than others, and each one remains discernible. In his notes to the original release, Calum Martin writes that the form, called precenting (where one person puts out the line and the congregation responds) while not exclusive to Gaelic free church traditions, is in Lewis particularly influenced by the pibroch style of free ornamentation. It's through this, he says, that the distinctive emotional swell of sound emerges. The sound relies on the congregation's individual responses to the melody and the individual precentor's leading. The musical term is free heterophony. Arc Light Editions has worked directly with DR Macdonald at the Bethesda Hospice and Calum Martin on this release. A portion of the profits from this release go directly to Bethesda Hospice, in accordance with the original release. Comes in a kraftliner sleeve printed in white litho; Artwork by Jennifer Lucy Allan.

RACE & THE TRUE SPIRIT, HUGO Spiritual Thirst LP
Spiritual Thirst, the magnificent album from Hugo Race & The True Spirit, is finally released on vinyl here, originally released only in Europe 1993 on CD. Spiritual Thirst was at the peak of Hugo Race's period delivering the rawest blues sound. The sound of this album is like mixing The Beasts Of Bourbon's Black Milk (1980) with Rowland S. Howard's Teenage Snuff Film (1999). Raw, bluesy, swampy, and brutal. For those who follow the music of Hugo Race, it is a must. For those who don't know it yet, there is no better door to enter into his music. Released on limited edition in order to make justice to this wonderful record, it has been remastered by Hugo Race himself. 150 gram vinyl; Edition of 500.

KUDO, TORI Gala-Kei 2LP+CD
Three levels of sound, based on an inspiration by Kudo Tori, with material added from the voicemail of Hashizaka Ai and her family, from a Maher Shalal Hash Baz 30th anniversary show in Shinjuku. Hashizaka's sounds are full of the highly entropic sadness of northern Wakayama and Maher at Shinjuku sounds like they were a little angry. Kudo says that he picked up a sense of blankness and kindness from these fragments. Something like the feeling you get at an out-of-the-way bookstore that has a nice collection of books, or at a small cheap bar that has fried organ meat, or a bakery, or taking a long trip, or when you're extremely busy with cooking, cleaning, housework, and child care, or other real experiences that make life worth living. PINHAS, RICHARD Rhizosphere CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Richard Pinhas's Rhizosphere, originally released in 1977. Richard Pinhas is one of the most important French electronic space rock musicians. Following five albums with his band Heldon, he released his first solo record in 1977. Backed by Heldon's congenial drummer François Auger but no longer bound by the group dynamic, he explores his freshly purchased Moog modular system in search of new sounds. It marked a departure into new realms. "We don't need new technique: everybody has a technique. We need new sounds. Trying to find new sounds is difficult." Finding new sounds is the task Pinhas set for himself on Rhizosphere. Not long before, he had acquired a Moog modular synthesizer, then settled into his home studio and began a committed relationship with his new instrument. Rhizosphere wasn't his first solo recording with the Moog -- Chronolyse was made a year earlier and released in 1978 -- but it was the first to be released. On four of its five tracks, Rhizosphere presents just the 25-year-old Pinhas and his synth alone together, a melding of man and machine that gradually becomes an expansive, outward-bound journey. Pinhas's simple approach spawned a galaxy of diverse sounds and ideas. Each track on Rhizosphere inhabits its own mini-universe sonically and emotionally. The range of moods traversed is stunning. The only other human being on Rhizosphere is drummer François Auger, who accompanies Pinhas on the title track. The escalating arc of its 18-minute run plays like a moonbound rocket-trip, with pulsing synth and roaming percussion made all the more otherworldly by the decision to filter Auger's cymbals through an AKS modular synthesizer. In science, the word "rhizosphere" means the layer of soil that surrounds and is altered by the roots of a plant. Using it as an album title suggests music as a kind of Möbius strip, creating its own nourishment, feeding off of its own discoveries in order to find more. But for Pinhas the choice was philosophically-inspired: he adopted it from a book about arithmetic by his academic mentor Gilles Deleuze. "It's about no gods, no sentimental things," he explains. "It means everything is the same until an event appears on a planet ... maybe music." Music as an emerging phenomenon, puncturing the surface of what's come before: Richard Pinhas certainly found what he was looking for on Rhizosphere. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

GERMAN ARMY More Bitter Fruit LP
South Californian dons of occult electronics, German Army return to Discrepant with their first solo vinyl LP outing for the label after an inaugural tape back in 2015 and a split collaboration with Old Komm in 2016 (CREP 033LP). Taking the events described in the 1982 book More Bitter Fruit, the CIA coup in Guatemala in 1954, the duo eloquently translates this textbook case of bullying relationship between the United States and the Third World. Using some US government documents and interviews with former CIA agents, they go deep in the Guatemala jungle through their trademark use of guitars and electronics drenched in echo and reverb of times past. Another mysterious entry from the shady San Bernadino duo, showing their interest and research in poorly documented history of the 21st century. Edition of 300."German Army could end up winning an Oscar for soundtracking a particularly dark war film or dying in the gutter when none of us are looking. Let's hope they keep delivering the heroin highs, and lows, we've come so accustomed to nodding off to." --Tiny Mix Tapes

DENGUE DENGUE DENGUE! Son De Los Diablos LP
A core influence in modern Peruvian music and culture today, Afro-Peruvian styles also continue to inform the music of Dengue Dengue Dengue. This inspiration is especially prominent on the title track "Son De Los Diablos", which incorporates traditional instruments such as the cajita, but also on "Buscando", where the duo recorded with members of the Ballumbrosio family -- the prominent lineage of musicians and dancers widely regarded as leading ambassadors of Afro-Peruvian music, dance, and culture. As the band explains, the song was "a big step forward", as it was the first time the duo recorded every rhythmic element with live musicians, giving the track "the flow and cadence only live musicians can achieve", as well as a vocal sample from one of Peru's biggest stars, Lucha Reyes. The release continues with final tracks "Flootz" and "Cobre", through which Dengue Dengue Dengue further explore their own unique blend of entrancing South American and African rhythms and melodies.

KEAREY & PAUL WIGENS, IAN Golden Section LP
Ian Kearey (Shirley Collins, Oyster Band, Blue Aeroplanes) and Paul Wigens (Blurt, Grand Drive, Dave Perry Trio) recorded Golden Section on a half-track in 2005 at Bristol's legendary Cube Cinema hours before the duo's one-and-only performance. It was released a limited run of only 20 CDs. Gerard Langley (Blue Aeroplanes) originally had the idea of putting together a "Sandy Bull / John Fahey" improvised guitar and drum duo and years later the result is the six essential tracks that is the Golden Section LP. Ian Kearey, who last year produced and played on Shirley Collins's Lodestar album (2016), played the six "Fahey"-influenced improvisations on a 1934 Regal Model 27 12-string resonator and a 1967 John Bailey hanjimer which, alongside the incredible jazz drums of Paul Wigens, delivers an intoxicating mix of American primitive, English folk, and early British experimental jazz.

ASSIS BRASIL, VICTOR Esperanto LP
Far Out Recordings present a second album from Victor Assis Brasil from the treasure trove of the Quartin Records catalog, Esperanto, originally released in 1976. Over the course of the 1960s, Roberto Quartin released more than 20 albums in Brazil on his label Forma. Selling the rights of Forma to Polygram in 1969, Quartin struck out for pastures new at the dawn of the 1970s with the launch of his self-titled label. Significant works and high-water marks for Brazilian music overall followed in that decade's first year. These singular gems in Brazilian music, difficult to categorize, yet compellingly beautiful, have for too long gone unheard. Gifted his first saxophone by his aunt at the age of fourteen, only four years later the determined young musician, Victor Assis Brasil recorded his debut album, with a second to follow only a year later. The prodigious young carioca was subsequently granted a place to study at Berklee College of Music, where he played alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Chick Corea, and Ron Carter. It was also during this period he recorded Esperanto and 1970's Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim (FARO 195LP) with Roberto Quartin, upon returning to Brazil in the summer of 1970. Recorded in the same sessions as the Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim album, Esperanto consists of five deep jazz cuts: original compositions except for a heavy-swinging Latin-jazz cover of Jimmy Heath's "Ginger Bread Boy", alongside more moments of wild frenetic jazz, like "Quarenta Graus A Sombra", amongst more melancholic, but no less captivating compositions like "Marilia" and "Ao Amigo Quartin". Esperanto's influences span both American continents, finding a meeting point for Latin jazz and North American post-bop, with Roberto Quartin's perfectionist approach to sound elevating the already incandescent music to divine new heights. The band consists of some mercurial greats of Brazilian music: Dom Salvador (bass), Edison Machado (drums), Helio Delmiro (guitar), and Edson Lobo (Bass). Victor Assis Brasil passed away aged just thirty-five, due to a rare circulatory disease, but by this point his status was already cemented as one of the most talented musicians in Brazil's history. Victor Assis Brasil passed away aged just thirty-five, due to a rare circulatory disease, but by this point he was already considered one of the most talented musicians in Brazil's history. Features a track previously unreleased on vinyl, "Children". Remastered from the original 2" tapes. 180 gram vinyl.

Taking a similar approach to that of his recent remix of Azymuth's Fênix (FARO 194CD/LP), Ron Trent takes "RAW" into harder territory, giving it an extra coat of slick, stripping back and tightening the original before adding his own layers of kaleidoscopic synth-lines and pad progressions.

MENTAL BEND One Step LP
LP version. Mental Bend captures the magic of the moment when sundown leads to the adventures of night in their dreamy soundtracks. If you close your eyes, you can see blurry pictures passing in slow motion, accompanied by their atmospheric songs. One Step is the Berlin-based indietronica duo's visually vivid debut album, released on Fenou. Sissip (vocals, synth, bass) and Hendrik Havekost (beats, production) know how to trust their instincts, crafting their hypnotic signature sound, somewhere in between electronica, ambient, and dream pop. Before founding the band in 2013, the two were already shaping their skills in all kinds of different formations and styles of music. As soon as they got together, they had a viral mini hit with their song "Take My Hand". The band's first long-player One Step is all about important experiences and decisions, small as well as big steps, all a part of making progress. In the past year while touring in Tokyo, Sissip and Havekost met Dapayk & Padberg, alias of Eva Padberg and Mo's Ferry co-founder Niklas Worgt, who were immediately impacted by Mental Bend's individual sound. Inspired by artists like Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack, Radiohead, and The XX, Mental Bend invent their very own soundscapes. Spheric loops, trippy downtempo beats, and indulging chords make for massive walls of sound, interweaved by fragile and melancholic vocals from another world. Sometimes creepy and dark, sometimes ethereal and surreal. It all results into an almost impossible to grasp mix of organic and electronic elements, mirrored by the band's name; Mental Bend aren't shy of making sudden turns in their tracks, bending their ideas into unpredictable creative sculptures and walk on unexpected paths, always challenging their listeners to really listen. One Step is their creation of a world of sound for the imaginary citizens of Metropolis. A sound matured and perfected on two tours through Germany, as well as at shows at the Berlin Berghain-Kantine, the C/O Pop Festival and the renowned Jetztmusik Festival in Mannheim. The influence on One Step doesn't stop in Berlin and Tokyo. The foundation is actually laid in New York City, where the duo wrote the title track in 2015. This inspirational atmosphere of the title track comes up elsewhere, like the restless "Walking", the claustrophobic "Invisible", the hypnotic love song "Madly In Love", or the contemplative pop song "Counting Stars".

CLOUD ONE Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By 12"
"A true holy grail from the Cloud One catalog, 'Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By' is the third of a string of titles on Golden Flamingo produced by the P&P duo of Patrick Adams and Peter Brown and featuring vocals from 'Guardian Angel' singer Margot Williams. Similar to previous Cloud One's productions, this record had all the elements of a Patrick Adams classic, but with vocal arrangements that foreshadowed the work he would do with Inner Life and Jocelyn Brown at Salsoul. Perhaps not so much of a concidence then that Margot Williams would provide backing vocals on Inner Life's second and final album. Even though it was originally released in 1981, 'Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By' is still championed by high-profile deejays today. Over the years, it's been notably sampled in Basement Jaxx's Romeo and covered by Todd Terje and Prins Thomas in 'Reinbagan' as a dub-disco cut. Available for the first time since its original release, our only piece of advice is to don't let this classic pass you by."

The main criterion was to pick tracks that sounded adequate for today's DJs to play at a gig, or were sufficiently interesting (or enough of a surprise to fans of the later version) to merit inclusion. The other measuring stick was that they needed to come from the old-school, before the more modern era (from 1962 on) and all of its recording innovations and marketing strategies... for now, listen to these dozen gems and then go back to their more familiar cousins from recent times and compare and contrast, and we're sure you'll be enlightened and entertained." Nyma's XYXX described: "We enter this world on horses and trampolines. It starts off so good, but what happens in between? We are marked before we get here. Divided once we reach here. Recollecting the stars across the spectrum is our joining. We combine to achieve our shining. XYXX is our union, magic animals in the blending, creatures in the cloaking while we work on a larger making. Something larger than one man or one woman, we are beings beyond the binary where the stars across the spectrum are shining. Look what you brought out. Look at you between the breathing. In our forgetting is the freedom. In our forgetting is the dancing. Let's meet there. I know you. I got you. Let's be loosely bound infinity, sink into the pause shamelessly. We enter this world on horses and trampolines. Gallop into the vanishing point collectively. Let's hang in the air for as long as we can, achingly. Take the scissors to our clothes, unwrap the sheaths, to see the light under the cloaking. Our boundaries are boundless." All music written and produced by Nima Chatrsimab and Genevieve Marentette. "Horses Of Imagination" features Amine Bendriouich.

TOLOUSE LOW TRAX Mask Talk LP
2018 repress; LP version. Includes one vinyl-only track, "Aseko On," and a download voucher for the entire CD. This is the debut full-length release by Düsseldorf's Detlef Weinrich aka Tolouse Low Trax. Mask Talk a distillation of the sounds of the night, possessing a musical intensity that bodes well for a different kind of dancefloor. Cool, atmospheric new wave sharpness, and a cushioned beat rate between 107 and 116 bpm call out a mechanical functionality that doesn't bow to any contemporary doctrine. This is urban music, and a true club album, harkening big city lights in Africa with chilly neon sounds from Düsseldorf. As a member of Kreidler, Weinrich has contributed to a group's cosmic vibes. Now, with his solo project, he demonstrates that an MPC and a small synthesizer ensemble are enough to bring alive futuristic dance music in the here and now. Bedroom-recorded under tense creative circumstances, the 10 tracks invoke, mostly instrumentally, an eerie atmosphere that would fit in perfectly with an early John Carpenter movie. With plenty delay on the bass figures, compact analog effects, percussive dabs and a rough blend of layers, Weinrich has, without any digital support, created quivering drum machine music, whose danceability he was able to test regularly as a resident DJ and co-owner of a Düsseldorf club/ bar. These tracks breathe the hypnotic power of his DJ sets, where he arranges diverse rhythms between Krautrock, cosmic, electronic and acid. They are also reminiscent of analog-electronic pioneers such as Cluster or Peter Baumann. Also, 1980s avant-gardists Cabaret Voltaire and Zazou Bikaye have left their mark, without Tolouse Low Trax explicitly referring to them. Mask Talk is a dark, urban solanum, full of reverb, whose melodies are never prankish, but whose minimal nonchalance is sure to help not only the dark creatures through the night.

KNOWLEDGE Hail Dread LP
LP version. Kingston Sounds present a reissue of Knowledge's debut album Hail Dread, originally released in 1978. The group Knowledge and Tapper Zukie's stories are intertwined through their location in the Rema area of Kingston. Tapper Zukie took the band under his wing and helped get this classic album Hail Dread a worldwide release back in 1979. When it first hit the record shelves, Knowledge's lineup included Anthony Doyley, Delroy Folding, Earl MacFarlane, Mike Smith, Michael Samuels, and later Paul Freeman. The group's debut release was Make Faith (1978) with Tapper Zukie introducing the band as his protégés, beginning a winning formula. The band released many of their early singles on Tapper's Stars imprint, and they were produced by Tapper himself. This culminated in Tapper getting the band a deal with a major label A&M making Knowledge the first reggae band to be signed to the label. A&M were keen to work with Tapper as an artist and producer. They even motioned Tapper to be backed by one of their other signed bands, The Police, for a UK tour. Tapper thought that being backed by a band named after such an establishment would not be a wise idea and declined the offer. But the connection did lead up to one of Jamaica's great vocal groups getting their debut album, again produced by Tapper Zukie and released on this major label. Sadly the relationship was short lived and the album Hail Dread would be their only release on A&M. Hail Dread is one of roots reggae's classic '70s releases and shows the group and their producer at the height of their powers. Proof is in the listening.

STIMMING X LAMBERT Exodus LP
Stimming and Lambert present Exodus, their debut as a duo, released on the new Berlin based Kryptox. Stimming is one of the main names in German advanced techno. He first appeared to the public with cooperations with David August and Solomun on Diynamic records. Later he created orchestral techno works and he is now one of the leading names in his genre. Lambert is one of the rising stars of German neo-classical music, often called the "pianoman with the mask". After three albums -- some recorded with a little help from Nils Frahm -- he is selling out venues all over Europe. Together Stimming and Lambert create a new approach to postmodern, romantic, and kraut-y electronica mixed with classical piano elements. TAZARTES/PAWEL ROMANCZUK/ANDRZEJ ZALESKI, GHEDALIA Carp's Head LP+CD
2016 release. The newest record produced by the group of three -- Ghédalia Tazartès, Pawel Romanczuk, and Andrzej Zaleski -- is the result of only a few meet-ups and a shared passion for music that shapes their perspective. The long play was recorded at the Rogalów Analogowy studio in the eastern part of Poland. It's worth noting that the space and surrounding countryside did not influence the sound itself as the record drifts away from the traditions of chamber music. The musicians, together as well as separately, avoid any mainstream influences. Thus, the acoustic record is peaceful, spiritual, and presents a wide variety of notions and emotions. The diversified vocal articulation and tone of Tazartès intertwines well with Zaleski's percussive play and Romanczuk's multi-instrumental skills. The rhythmic pulsation is constantly taking new directions, eventually turning into noise at some point. The voice, somehow dramatic, traps the listeners and sends them on a journey through non-existent quasi-stories. An elusive romantic magician personified by a carp-headed cat. French cult artist Ghédalia Tazartès is an uncompromising character who defies categorization. He recorded alone a dozen of albums, calling his way of working "Impromuz" for lack of a better term. Before the years 2000s, his public appearances remained exceptional events. Romanczuk is a founder of the Polish artistic group Male Instrumenty with whom he recorded ten albums. He composed several film soundtracks and collaborated with significant theater houses. His music collaboration with Andrzej Zaleski and Ghedalia Tazartes started back in 2014; however, he was familiar with their music for quite a time. Andrzej Zaleski -- musician, filmmaker, and curator -- has collaborated with: Ghédalia Tazartès, Aspec(t), Joe Giardullo, Eugene Chadbourne, Charles Hayward, John Hegre, Tatsuya Yoshida, Pavel Fajt, Sylvie Courvoisier, Vinz Vonlanthen, Male Instrumenty, Johannes Bergmark, and many others. He also played in bands like: Multicide, Mitch and Mitch, and 3 Metry, Za Siódma Góra. LP includes CD; CD includes the bonus track "Wolves And Birds Part 2". Edition of 300.

ETANT DONNES WITH MICHAEL GIRA Offenbarung Und Untergang CD
Munster Records present a reissue of this 1999 collaboration between Etant Donnés (Eric and Marc Hurtado) and Michael Gira (Swans), featuring Mark Cunningham (Mars) and Saba Komossa (Delkom). The album is based upon the text "Offenbarung und Untergang" ("Revelation and Demise"), written by the Austrian expressionist poet Georg Trakl in 1914. Trakl served as pharmacist on the front of World War I and was overcome by drug addiction when confronted with the overwhelming suffering he witnessed. In early November of 1914 at the age of 27 he took his own life via cocaine overdose at the military hospital in Krakow. The Hurtado brothers create a fittingly eerie, somber, and desolate soundscape as backdrop to Michael Gira's reading and singing (in German) of Trakl's equally somber poetic text. The music is filled with drones, noise, rumblings, bits of percussion, Gira's deep and entrancing voice, Komossa's sensual interventions, and Cunningham's martial trumpet. From the opening moments, the listener is dealing with mysterious and menacing musical textures and the voice of Michael Gira that is slow, strange, nonchalant, sounding as under the influence of powerful narcotics. Offenbarung Und Untergang is one of those unique and strong records which makes you feel not completely the same before and after listening to it. The musical atmosphere and the hypnotic power of the voices make this album an intense, exciting, and dark experience, as strange as unreal.

LATYRX The Album: 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition 2LP
"20 years after its initial release, the Bay Area uber-classic Latyrx: The Album -- lyricists Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker, with production from DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born -- still stands as a seminal recording. It has gone on to resonate with successive generations of listeners, and influence countless artists. Recorded over a two-year period, it was the first full-length release from the legendary Solesides collective, and encapsulates a highly creative and influential time in hip-hop, frequently dubbed 'The Golden Age'. Over the course of the original release's 42 minutes, not only can you hear Lyrics Born and Lateef literally growing into themselves as artists, but you can also hear the germination of the Solesides sound, first given birth at California's UC Davis in the early '90s, driven by brothers-in-beats-and-rhymes Blackalicious and DJ Shadow. Partially by design, and partially out of necessity, Latyrx -- and the Solesides crew as a whole -- became trailblazers. Lyrics Born remembers (in this set's lengthy liner notes), 'We really wanted to explore. New styles, new subject matter, new textures, new vocabulary. It came down to even wanting to do words in the English language that you had never heard in a rap song before. It was all about pushing.' This deluxe, double-LP issue of Latyrx: The Album is a must for longtime fans and newly-initiated listeners alike, with in-depth liner notes by veteran Bay Area journalist Eric Arnold (including input from Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker) and packaged in a gatefold format."

FIRE! The Hands LP
LP version. Very much a tight knit unit with three equal players, Fire! has been likened to powerful guitar led trios such as Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but with Johan Berthling's heavy, doom-laden basslines being such a typical identifier, you can't help but think of Black Sabbath's debut album (1970) when it comes to hypnotic impact. The Hands is the trio's sixth album and it once again displays a totally uncompromising and intriguing mix of (mostly) heavy, dark, and intensely burning music whether one decides to call it jazz or rock. The album closes on a quiet and reflective note with the appropriately titled "I Guard Her To Rest. Declaring Silence." And you might say it's easily their best so far. Personnel: Mats Gustafsson - tenor, baritone and bass saxophones, live electronics; Johan Berthling - electric and double bass; Andreas Werliin - drums, percussion and feedback.

"Roll The Dice" flexes on a melodic tip that'll have itself ear-wormed straight into your brain on first listen. Deft, supple drum programming and a constantly morphing arrangement keep the tune rolling tuff until the last second. On the back of it is "Cane Sword", the A side's even rowdier cousin. Where "Roll The Dice" allows its melody to run the show, "Cane Sword" favors smacks and punches from the rhythm and bass sections. The emphasis on the sub-line is more apparent, and pulses in the vein of a Bandulu gang track -- no surprise considering Boofy's allegiances.

MAXIMUM JOY I Can't Stand It Here On Quiet Nights: Singles 1981-82 2x12"
2018 repress. Silent Street is the new collaborative label from Chris Farrell (Idle Hands) and Kiran Sande (Blackest Ever Black). For their first release, they present a compilation of singles by one of their shared musical lodestars: Bristol's extraordinary Maximum Joy. Formed in 1980, by 18 year-old vocalist Janine Rainforth alongside Tony Wrafter, a trumpeter/saxophonist previously affiliated with Glaxo Babies. Wrafter's former accomplices, Charlie Llewellin (drums) and Dan Catsis (bass), completed the original line-up, alongside erstwhile Pop Group guitarist John Waddington. With a youthful confidence and energy that leaps out at you even now, they took their diverse influences -- punk, modern jazz, disco, dub, funk, soul, Afro-beat, and chansons -- and distilled them into some of the greatest, most intoxicating pop music ever made. Together they carved out a story which today stands as a sumptuous feast for anyone interested in the roots and evolution of "the Bristol sound". There are links, back and forth, with The Slits and Dennis Bovell, On-U Sound through to the Wild Bunch, Massive Attack, Smith & Mighty, and Tricky's "Aftermath". Thirty-five years on, it's impossible not to be blown away by their combination of instrumental virtuosity and DIY pluck, and by their fearless application of disorientating dub FX. In terms of open-minded, progressive, and life-affirming music made in the post-punk era, little else comes close. This first ever official reissue of Maximum Joy material is centered around the trio of singles the band released on Y Records in 1981-1982. Their first, "Stretch", became an anthem on the New York club underground, a cult staple at Danceteria and on late-night radio. This compilation gives pride of place to their first B side, "Silent Street/Silent Dub": a languid tribute to long summer nights in St Pauls. Llewellin's mesmerizing one-drop kit and Catsis's outrageously heavy bassline anchor the track, allowing Rainforth's exquisite vocal and Wrafter's trumpet to soar within the expressionistic dub mix. In both subject matter and execution, it is the definitive Bristol tune. "White And Green Place (Extraterrestrial Mix)", "In The Air", and wistful instrumental "Simmer Til Done" also feature; the non-Y bonus is the 12" version of "Do It Today", Maximum Joy's contribution to the Fontana compilation Touchdown (1982). Sleeve notes by Janine Rainforth, Tony Wrafter, and Kevin Pearce.

GUTHRIE, ANNE Codiaeum Variegatum LP
2014 release. "Based in Brooklyn, Anne Guthrie is a professional acoustician, composer and sound artist whose work combines a highly technical knowledge of natural reverb, field recording and extended microphone techniques with live and processed instrumentation, including French horn, violoncello and contrabass. Her music explores the play of dichotomies: cacophony / beauty, accidental / intentional, unhinged / refined, traditional / outsider. Codiaeum Variegatum is Guthrie's debut full-length proper, following out-of-print short-run releases on labels such as Engraved Glass and Copy For Your Records, as well as the recently released and critically lauded Sinter, a collaboration with Richard Kamerman issued by Erstwhile Records' sub-label ErstAEU. The album's six compositions showcase Guthrie's acumen as a composer of rich and diverse sonic phenomena. From the keeling strings which open 'Branching Low and Spreading,' she guides the listener through dense yet highly structured thickets of sound, juxtaposing astute room / field recordings with classical instrumentation, both dry and processed. On 'Unlike More Slender and Graceful,' filtered French horn plumes are wed to cavernous, watery field recordings to forge beautiful yet bleak vistas, motifs to be revisited in a more hopeful light later on. Ultimately, Guthrie's work occupies a heady middle ground somewhere between the enchantment of the everyday manifested by artists such as Graham Lambkin and Vanessa Rossetto and the high-minded electroacoustic investigations of her fellow Erstwhile alumni."

MONOCHROME SET, THE 1979-1985: Complete Recordings 6LP+6CD BOX
6LP boxset edition. Includes CD versions of each album; Edition of 700. Emerging at the end of punk era, The Monochrome Set's estrangement from society came from a more arty angle. This boxset is the full account of their frantically productive early period, the perfect document of an under-appreciated chapter of British pop history. Though widely unknown, they are one of the most influential British bands of the last 40 years, with the early Morrissey and Marr, Blur's Graham Coxon, and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos among their admirers. Though Ganesh Seshadri, aka Bid, never went to college, The Monochrome Set are often seen as an archetypal art school band. In 1979 they released a string of snappy, now highly collectible singles on Rough Trade, followed by early masterpieces Strange Boutique (1980) and Love Zombies (1980). In 1982 they released their third LP Eligible Bachelors on Cherry Red Records. Their major label effort The Lost Weekend (1985) contained their biggest hit "Jacob's Ladder"."... the early Monochrome Set sound betrayed a fondness of Lou Reed and American psychedelia, and though they shared their generation's sense of estrangement, they certainly weren't part of the punk revolution. . . . [the Hornsey School of Art] was where lead guitarist Tom Hardy, later to be known as Lester Square, studied with a certain Stuart Goddard aka Adam Ant . . . The Monochrome Set's lack of breakthrough success is usually attributed to their inability to churn out the hits, but in hindsight their now highly collectible first four seven inches for the Rough Trade label, united here on one disc with all the singles from the early eighties period, prove that they started out as bona fide masters of pop's ultimate format. Released in February 1980, their first album Strange Boutique, featuring the band's percussion-heavy theme song and the Johnny Marr-anticipating 'Love Goes Down The Drain', caught the Monochrome Set in full flight, quickly followed by the equally taut, funny and adventurously dynamic Love Zombies. 1982 saw them move to Cherry Red Records on their third LP Eligible Bachelors, with the catchy lead single "The Jet Set Junta" promptly banned because of its non-existent connection to the Falklands War. . . . After a financially disastrous American tour, the band were resigned to taking the major label shilling with The Lost Weekend (1985), scoring their biggest airplay hit with 'Jacob's Ladder'..." --Robert Rotifer, Canterbury 2017

ASTOR, PETE One For The Ghost LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. "The master of less is more" --The Guardian.Pete Astor on the record: "Time passes. Life happens. People arrive and people leave. Songs celebrate, songs grieve, look at yesterday and smile towards tomorrow; and everywhere, ghosts. One evening, when I was enjoying my favourite red wine, I decided to pour an extra glass for people and times past. Soon it became a tradition, the name of a song and then an album: One For The Ghost."This is a record born through time; seasoned and erudite Indie auteur, ex leader of Creation Records' favorites The Loft and The Weather Prophets, Pete Astor brings together strands and tributaries in his work over the years, mining timeless guitar pop to frame wry lyrical insights and melodic hooks, making music for today, with a true line from the past and an eye to the future. Having released Spilt Milk in 2016 to an overwhelmingly positive response, Astor continues the musical spirit of that album with James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, Proper Ornaments, Veronica Falls) remaining a mainstay on guitar. He is now joined by The Wave Pictures' rhythm section of Franic Rozycki on bass and Jonny Helm on drums; Pam Berry of Withered Hand and Black Tambourine contributes vocals. One For The Ghost's rainy day psychedelia maintains Astor's engagement with relevant and contemporary worlds; from the mordant wit of the title track ("It's the wallpaper or me you know/one of us has got to go/ said Oscar Wilde/ and then he died"), to the London-based outsider ache of "Walker" ("Walking the town, joining the future to the past/ the line from Arnold Circus all the way to Marble Arch"), via the ageless love song of "Water Tower" and its paean to rural modernism ("Meet me by the water tower/ it's my favorite concrete flower"). Bruised, but very much alive, Astor and One For The Ghost face the future with a wry smile and hungry heart.

STROPPIES, THE The Stroppies LP
2018 yellow vinyl repress. The Stroppies self-titled debut. Originally released as a cassette in 2017 on the Hobbies Galore label. Starting out as a recording project between Angus Lord, Claudia Serfaty, and Stephanie Hughes, the germ of what would eventually become The Stroppies was formed around a kitchen table in Melbourne's inner west, early in 2016. The initial idea was to create open-ended music, collaged quickly and haphazardly together on a Tascam 4-track Portastudio that drew on stream-of-consciousness creativity and a DIY attitude a la Guided By Voices and The Great Unwashed. The desire to move beyond the pre-programmed drum patterns available on their Casio keyboard led to the addition of Rory Heane on drums and a more conventional band dynamic. In Late 2016, Alex Macfarlane recorded the band in their lounge room direct to 4-track, capturing seven songs that would become their 2017 self-titled cassette tape debut. The songs were bounced back-and-forth from tape machine to computer to tape machine to computer again. In keeping with the bands initial aesthetic, dubs were laid over a four month period incrementally on different devices as members had babies, explored intercontinental love affairs, and set up homes together. Since the release of the tape, Adam Hewwit has joined the group on third guitar as they settle down into exploring the new band dynamic and focus on their next recording project. The Stroppies is composed of members of many Melbourne and UK bands (Claudia is originally from London) including Dick Diver, Primetime, Possible Humans, White Walls, Boomgates, The Stevens, and See/Saw, to name a few. They make modest, idiosyncratic pop songs that reward with repeated listening.\

"Like a few other notable sophomore records from hip-hop acts (De La Soul Is Dead, The Low End Theory), Jurassic 5's Power In Numbers is darker than their first full-length; not as fresh and exuberant, but much more mature and intelligent.... Displaying a focus and intensity basically unseen in rap music during the past decade, the group practically bursts with message tracks; the skeletal first single 'Freedom' finds Chali 2na and Akil delving into the concept as it relates to everything from Third World poverty to the American penitentiary system. 'Remember His Name' and 'Thin Line' (the latter with Nelly Furtado) are dark tales of urban passions, and they're a step forward in that it's not just the raps that are intricate, but the storytelling also requires a few listens to understand. The group still has plenty of time for a few old-school anthems like 'What's Golden' and 'A Day at the Races,' with Big Daddy Kane bringing his alliterative ammo to the track. And the instrumental jam 'Acetate Prophets' shows DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist refining their skill for merging turntablism and excellent productions. Perhaps the best statement of Jurassic 5's purpose comes from the group itself, on 'If You Only Knew': 'What we do is try to give you what you ain't used to.'" --John Bush, All Music

GREEN CHILD, THE The Green Child LP
The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 in when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child. With such a choice name, it's no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven's calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o'-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions. "Traveler" opens the album all redolent, beat-minded, and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a "solitary man" lost to "green oblivion". Similarly, "Her Majesty II" glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst "Bertha" slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space. The Green Child is adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realize and build to their potential. Tracks like "Walking Distance", featuring Al Montfort on saxophone, and "New Years Eve" are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band's cover of "Marie Elene", by Keith Pearson, and closing track "Destroyer" are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don't want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower?

I MARC 4 Nelson Psychout: Original Italian Library Music From The Vaults Of Nelson Records CD
Italian library music expert Alessandro Casella on Nelson Psychout: "Welcome to the second release of Vampisoul's Psychout series. In this album we dig into the record library of Nelson Records, founded in 1970 by the musicians Maurizio Majorana, Antonello Vannucchi and Roberto Podio after establishing the recording studio Telecinesound, right where the New Italian Library Sound was created. This is the sound that many collectors, musicians, record producers and film directors still like, look for, rediscover and re-use for their work. The New Italian Library Sound has the signature of I Marc 4, a quartet that recorded 20 albums from 1970 to 1980 but who also collaborated with the great masters of Italian soundtracks of the '60s and '70s, especially with Armando Trovajoli, bringing their own style into this new sound, mixing jazz, pop, rock and psychedelic music. Maurizio Majorana on bass, Antonello Vannucchi on Hammond organ and piano, and Roberto Podio on drums, were the backbone of the quartet, but the real soul was the guitarist Carlo Pes. Although Pes played with the RAI (Italy's public broadcaster) orchestra together with his three colleagues, he did so as an external musician. He was a virtuoso guitar player with international experience who wrote music for the pop singers of the great RCA Italy label. His biggest hits were 'Il Mondo', sung by Jimmy Fontana, and 'Che Sarà' by José Feliciano. Thanks to their recording visits to Telecinesound, these four musicians were an experienced and very inspired studio band. Through their rhythmic experimentation they created a warm sound, sweet, most of the time sour-sweet, inspired by pop music of the period, filtered by their great technical execution. Their jazz roots did the rest to create the New Italian Library Sound. Any derivation of the pysch-groove genre is explored in this album. Despite having collaborated with the great artists of pop music, it is only in I Marc 4's own records that we have the chance to hear a guitar so rough, aggressive and sometimes disturbing, as was required by the composers of the time. Enjoy the Psychout world of I Marc 4." CD version includes two additional tracks.

ULTHA/PARAMNESIA Split LP
A split release between two black metal bands held in very high esteem: Paramnesia from France and Ultha from Germany. Paramnesia offer up a 20-minute track named "VI" -- epic black metal, forged around a core of frozen might, and expanded with progressive, atmospheric, and melodic components. Paramnesia's blistering delivery is ramped up in intensity by the needle-thin screams of their singer. Around these slices of venom, entire architectures of emotive blackness spring up and die down at the whim of their creators. Sometimes the band will craft these structures from blasting extremity, while at others the pace slows and time is taken to explore different atmospheric avenues. Effective and extremely enjoyable. Ultha's contribution to this split -- "The Seventh Sorrow", 18 minutes in length -- shows Ultha have lost none of their talent for highly-engaging music. "The Seventh Sorrow" is atmospheric and fiery, with gripping melodies and dark mood both present in abundance. With equally abundant bleak melancholy and in-depth emotive content, as well as crazily infectious guitar parts, this song demonstrates firmly that the quality of the material on album Converging Sins (2016) wasn't a one off.

DAY OF PHOENIX Wide Open N-Way LP
Vinilisssimo present a reissue of Day Of Phoenix's debut Wide Open N-Way, originally released in 1970. Forming a rock band in Denmark in 1968 meant that albums such as Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow (1967) or Love's Forever Changes (1967), along with the work of other US west coast bands, would most likely be a strong inspiration. Not just due to the many boundaries questioned by all these amazing records at that time, but also because of the dreams of golden sunsets in acid California that were evoked through most of this great music, which looked understandably attractive to the eyes of any young Scandinavian. Ole Prehn on guitars, Erik Stedt on piano and bass, Henrik Friis on drums, Karsten Lyng on lead guitar, and Hans Lauridsen on vocals formed Day Of Phoenix that year under the influence of the "Endless Summer", but they were also very skilled musicians looking forward to challenging the traditional three-minute song length. Wide Open N-Way is their 1970 debut album, produced by Tony Reeves (bassist in Colosseum). The band delivers an epic collection of melancholic songs (three of the five tracks on the LP clock in at past ten minutes) with extended instrumental sections that at some point seem to explore the paths of free-jazz. Nevertheless, this is not a chaotic piece of music, but a very well balanced, structured, and harmonious recording of loose psychedelic and progressive rock at its best. Day Of Phoenix fell apart after Erik Stedt died unexpectedly and an uninspired follow-up album brought about the band's dismantling. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

JEAN PAUL "EL TROGLODITA" Vudu LP
Vinilisssimo present a reissue of Jean Paul "El Troglodita"'s Vudú, originally released in 1973. Enrique Tellería (aka Jean Paul) was nicknamed "El Troglodita" (The Caveman) due to his wild performances in his native Peru. Screams, extreme body shaking and, quite often, stage destruction were part of his energetic show. During the mid-to-late '60s, as his reputation as a singer increased, he took part in a few local recordings and recorded a full LP of moderate success. This would soon lead him to further opportunities in other countries such as Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama, or Mexico. Vudú was his second LP, recorded in 1972 and released on Discos MAG. The first guitar chords of the opening track, with plenty of wah wah and fuzz effects, anticipate the vibe of the entire album: hard psych meets Latin funk. However, throughout the whole record Jean Paul's singing masterfully gravitates between mellow soul moments and extremely energetic doses of wildness... In fact, the seamless brass arrangements on this album bring memories of sophisticated US soul records. The members of the amazing band Laghonia play on this album as backing musicians, resulting in a masterpiece of unorthodox Latin psych at its best. There are no fillers here, almost every track could be a serious contender for making its way onto a 45, but the standout song "Everything Is Gonna Change" alone would justify the need of having this album in any record collection. The very accomplished take on the Pop Tops original "Any Time" is also worth a mention, and so is the amazing Latin soul number "Te Amo Más", but the whole album is very solid from start to finish, and one of Peru's finest ever. Jean Paul's career would last a few more years until the mid-1970s, when his popularity started to slowly vanish. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

PENDANT Make Me Know You Sweet 2LP
The artist sometimes known as Huerco S. ushers a phase shift of sound to the shoegazing harmonic gauze of Make Me Know You Sweet, his immersive debut proper as Pendant. In this horizontal mode, Brian Leeds relays abstract stories from a headspace beyond the dance, placing his interests in the Romantic landscapes of JMW Turner, Robert Ashley's avant-garde enigmas, and Indigenous North American philosophy at the service of a more expressive, oneiric sound that sub/consciously avoids the trap falls of "chillout" ambient cliché. Across seven amorphous, texturally detailed tracks he establishes far reaching coordinates for both Pendant and the West Mineral Ltd. label, which aims to release everything except the commonly accepted, traditional forms of late 20th/early 21st century dance music, while also representing the work of his inner circle of friends, producers, artists. In that that sense there's a definite feeling of "no place like home" to his new work, but that home appears altered, much in the same way The Caretaker/Leyland Kirby deals with themes of memory and nostalgia. It's best described as mid-ground music, as opposed to the putative background purpose of ambient styles, or the upfront physicality of dance music. Rather, the sound billows and unfurls with a paradoxically static chaos, occupying and lurking a space between the eyes and ears in a way that's not necessarily comforting, and feels to question the nature and relevance of ubiquitous pastoral, new age tropes in the modern era of uncertainty and disingenuity. The results ponder an impressionistic, romantically ambiguous simulacrum of real life worries and anxiety, feeling at once dense and impending yet without center. From the keening, 11-minute swell of "VVQ-SSJ" at the album's prow, to the similar scope of its closer, Pendant presents an absorbing vessel for introspection, modulating the listener's depth perception and moderating our intimacy with an elemental push and pull between the curdling, bittersweet froth of "BBN-UWZ", the dusky obfuscation of "IBX-BZC" and, in the supremely evocative play of phosphorescing light and seductive darkness in the mottled depths of "KVL-LWQ", which also benefits from additional production by Pontiac Streator. Make Me Know You Sweet taps into a latent, esoteric vein of American spirituality that's always been there, yet is only divined by those who remain open-minded to its effect. Master and lacquer cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 700.

COHEN-SOLAL, ROBERT Les Shadoks LP + 7"
LP version. Comes as a limited edition 12" + 7" vinyl album; High glossy gatefold; Includes an exclusive Shadok drawing by Robert Cohen-Solal. WRWTFWW Records announce the release of the complete soundtrack of cult French animated TV series Les Shadoks (1968-1974) by Robert Cohen-Solal, available for the first time ever in its entirety. It's the right in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jacques Rouxel and René Borg's legendary television cartoon. Electro-acoustic pioneer and eminent member of the illustrious GRM (Groupe de recherches musicales, the French equivalent of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop), Robert Cohen-Solal has explored music and sound alongside luminaries such as Bernard Parmegiani, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, and Iannis Xenakis, and is responsible for numerous projects in the field of applied music, soundtracks (documentaries, shorts etc.), and experimental recordings. His work on Les Shadoks is simply extraordinary -- a fascinating and bizarre collage of wacky electro pop (à la Jean-Jacques Perrey), drones, musique concrète, classical, and dadaist sound experiments seamlessly mixed into a cohesive and cinematic listening experience. The ideal soundtrack for what will remain one of the weirdest animated TV series ever created. A true literary, cultural, and philosophical phenomenon in France, Les Shadoks caused a sensation while airing between 1968 and 1974. Its unique combination of Alfred Jarry-style surrealism, off-centered British humor, and US comic strip inspiration, all brought to life by illustrated bird-like creatures (reminiscent of Paul Klee's La machine à gazouiller, or Twittering Machine), left a lasting mark, making the term "Shadok" an oft-used satirical expression to describe policies and attitudes considered to be absurd.
