LE MILLIPEDE Le Millipede CD
It's a well-known fact that millipedes, though frequently referred to as "thousand leggers," actually have no more than 750 legs, usually way less. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that the band Le Millipede is actually just one guy -- who happens to play a whole lot of different instruments with his own two hands. He goes by the name Mathias Götz. Arranging various layers of piano, xylophone, glockenspiel, Stylophone, Moog, and harmonium, Le Millipede creates minimalist, instrumental pop gems, tracks with an immediate quality that seem rather simple at first listen. In fact, Götz's recordings are somewhat comparable to the work of France-born, Barcelona-based composer Pascal Comelade, known for his use of toy instruments. In both cases, there's a certain childlike quality at work, a disarming naïveté. While Comelade often uses toy piano, Götz is particularly fond of the Casio VL Tone mini-keyboard; and even though most people will associate said instrument with Trio's "Da Da Da" single, Götz actually considers it a nod to artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Arvo Pärt, and Moondog. In order to create the intricate beats of Le Millipede, Götz used a vast range of percussion instruments, including maracas, claves, darbuka, seashells, mbira (thumb piano), davul, zils/finger cymbals, small bells, caxixi, and even mules' teeth, occasionally joined by layers of tom-tom drums, snare, bass drum, and cymbals. Another key element of Le Millipede's sound is certainly the way Götz employs his voice; instead of foregrounding it and focusing on literal messages, he merely adds his vocal layers as yet another instrument. Last but not least, there's the trombone, an instrument that's probably the most obvious hint at Mathias Götz's background; he actually studied jazz trombone and composition (after learning how to build brass instruments as an apprentice). And yet, his musical approach, tastes, and skills are so wide-ranging and eclectic that, apart from recording as Le Millipede, he also plays in bands as diverse as Micha Acher's Alien Ensemble, the Münchner Hochzeitskapelle, the Unterbiberger Hofmusik, and various big bands. Following a 2007 EP with Robert Alonso as RoBErT GoEtZ, Le Millipede is Mathias Götz's full-length debut.

LE MILLIPEDE The Sun Has No Money CD
Alien Ensemble's trombone man Mathias Goetz caused quite a splash when he released his eponymous debut LP under his Le Millipede moniker back in 2015 (N 042CD/LP): The multi-instrumentalist's initial offering was clearly something else, impossible to grasp, a musical vessel that carried an almost cosmic kind of song-craft. Followed by remix album Mirror Mirror (2017), it's now time for album number two: The Sun Has No Money. Following an initial warm-up round sans electricity, this new album soon begins to glow: Goetz doesn't need pedals, he boosts circulation by single-handedly playing tons and tons of different instruments -- it actually feels like thousands, easily. There are various sonic illusions... and yet Le Millipede doesn't hide anything: He's also willing to show the inner workings, the actual recording process and everything else. In short: he goes meta. Some of these melodies appear to be shadows of earlier tunes, dating back to, say, 1898 or even before that, melodies that were first registered in the Tin Pan Alley publishers' offices back in 1912 or 1917. You'll actually get to see this Alley at that point in time. You'll see the ropes, the workings. Suddenly, you can hear the shadows! Okay, so one side of this street is America. The opposite side: Russia. And smack dab in the middle: Europe. All the back-and-forth that occurs between these two poles ultimately depends on the movement of the sun. You'll get to meet Prokofiev's and Scriabin's ghost, among other spirits, reframed and published by Le Millipede's own imaginary label imprint on the historic Tin Pan Alley. Indeed there are moments on this album when Le Millipede seems to be playing Scriabin's clavier a lumieres, when his performance seems to be based on synesthesia, a wild cross-pollination of colors and sounds. In case you didn't know this: In the States, Prokofiev goes by the name Brian Wilson, and Scriabin's also known as Sun Ra -- yet another guy who's usually broke, but gets to spend a lot of time out in the sun. Together, these assorted protagonists ask the people of the Antilles for Mutabor dance-tokens and send postcards to Moondog in Germany, right back into the darkness. Le Millipede controls the very center of this hustle and bustle: going as far as to employ some southern chopped-and-screwed styles, he's 100% current and zeitgeisty!

ENDERS & MICHA ACHER, JOHANNES Brookland Suite LP
Brookland Suite is inspired by Micha Acher's travels to New Orleans and Johannes Enders's admiration for the soundscapes of Gil Evans. The unique instrumentation and the rough sound make Brookland a very special suite for lovers of deep sounds. Johannes Enders is a saxophone player with his own distinguished voice, and a rich international performing experience, covering gigs with artists as diverse as Donald Byrd, Jeff Watts, Roy Hargrove, Vincent Herring, George Cables, Lester Bowie, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. He won a Silver Award at the American MusicFest in San Francisco (1990) and was finalist at the Monk Competition in Washington D.C. (1991) and won the German "Jazz Echo" prize as best sax player. Micha Acher is best known as a founding member of innovative German post-rock band The Notwist. Enders and Acher grew up together in Weilheim, a small town near Munich. Already back in 1992 they played together in the electro/free jazz band Tied & Tickled Trio (with Billy Hart). Now they decided it's time for another collaboration. For Brookland Suite they invited New Orleans based sax player Dan Oestereicher and drummer Howard Curtis from Washington to join them. Color vinyl; silk-screen artwork.

MCMAHON, F.J. Spirit Of The Golden Juice LP
2017 release. "The world that inspired Spirit Of The Golden Juice nearly 50 years ago has moved on. F.J. McMahon moved on with it. Originally pressed in a small quantity and scattered along the California coastline in 1969, F.J. McMahon's first and only album, Spirit Of The Golden Juice, is a spell-binding blend of singer-songwriter emotion and spiraling guitar accompaniment with a raw, adventurous character all its own. Well-chronicled and loved since its rediscovery, Spirit Of The Golden Juice is an album concerned with memory and mystery and the preservation of the two. It's also about the weight of personal experience and how we tow it around with us. F.J.'s simple, personal approach to songwriting allows us the space to fill in our own colors and our own faces. Its themes are there in plain sight, but the questions it asks are sometimes left for us to answer for ourselves."

LOURE Smooth Talk EP 12"
The Apparel Music Limited series presents a four-track EP from Loure. "Smooth Talk" can be certified as a dancefloor banger with solid rhythms, "smooth" synths, and a hint of acid. "Mutual Motion" gives a display of what this Melbournian can do in terms of creating spacey deep harmonies. Saine creates another banging tune with his remix of "Smooth Talk", adding his touch with deep percussions, a substantial compact beat, and a bassline that will carry you away. "Needs" is the right decompression after a journey through sounds: rolling snares, vocal samples chasing each other, and a happy touch.

CHEVALREX Anti Slogan LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Gatefold sleeve with matte finish. Since 2016, Rémy Poncet, aka Chevalrex, sits among the top new French songwriters to watch thanks to Futurisme (BEC 5156452/BEC 5156453, 2016), an intimate sophomore album which he plays all the instruments, and also critically-acclaimed by the press. Wondering how one finds his/her place in today's world while staying true to him/herself, Chevalrex offers his answers in this third album and leaves behind his minimalist compositions to raise his ambitions and push his music into a whole other dimension. Recorded this time with additional musicians and even a whole string orchestra, Anti Slogan compiles ten songs meticulously crafted in which the worlds of Jim O'Rourke, Vincent Delerme, Tindersticks, and Boris Vian collide, showcasing a level of refinement hardly ever heard in the French pop scene.

BIOSPHERE Shenzhou 3LP
2018 repress; triple LP version. Biophon present a reissue of Biosphere's Shenzhou, originally released by Touch in 2002. This expanded reissue includes a bonus album The Samphire Tower. Paul Cooper, of Pitchfork, on the album: "Shenzhou, aside from being the name of the Chinese manned-spaceflight vehicles, means 'magic vessel', and I can't imagine a more apt description for Geir Jenssen's latest excursion into ambient deep listening. . . . Jenssen again relies on found sound as source material for Shenzhou, but this time, the found sound is old vinyl recordings of the orchestral works of French Impressionist composer and ambient precursor, Claude Debussy. Jenssen lifts fragments of these scratched records in a similar manner as he did for Cirque's 'Black Lamb Grey Falcon' and 'Iberia Eterea'. The ten tracks (out of the dozen on the album) that follow this model all begin as a barely audible hum, like a small electrical transformer, out of which the dust-dappled loops of Debussy's woodwind, brass, and strings emerge, condense, and fade out into pink noise rustles. Unlike Steve Reich's phase pieces or Brian Eno's Discreet Music, though, Jenssen doesn't set his loops against each other to produce juxtapositions and piquant dissonance; he uses them to describe imagined terrain, at first glance monotonously flat and barren, but on concentration, replete with minute detailing. The overall effect of these pieces is a sense of immensity. The orchestral loops sound distant, abandoned in a vast wilderness, and strenuously battling against Arctic winds. Jenssen sets the listener down in this wilderness as an aloof observer, a witness to the music's futile struggles against entropic forces. The two tracks not derived from Debussy share the same hypnotic aesthetic. The brief interlude 'Bose-Einstein Condension' is a loop of piano chords lolloping in search of coherence, while 'Gravity Assist' is a longer voyage into woofer-quaking low-frequency manipulation, bell-like drones, and contrails of subdued noise. I can't help but feel that these tracks fit awkwardly and break up the conceptual flow of the album. This, however, is a minor quibble given the power of this music. Shenzhou is unquestionably a magic vessel, but one that reveals its enchantment only to those who pay close attention."

VASSILIU, PIERRE Face B - 1965/1981 CD
Pierre Vassiliu had always been reduced. Few were the real fans, who had explored all angles and taken the measure of the man. Maybe his rhymes weren't that rich, the instrumentation not too lush, the production quite laid-back, and the timbre rather little demanding, but you could be sure the song would be pampered. Because Vassiliu continuously tried to remodel his career, from a chansonnier to a cunning singer, from tender to comical, to a beatnik poet, to an ethno-artist, to a venue manager, to a showman, to a barfly. 1961: Pierre Vassiliu, a horse rider and a war photographer, embarks with his brother Michel (lyricist) in the music business. Their department: comedy. Lucky break, it works. Georges Brassens champions him and writes a few laudatory lines on his first 45 -- Vassiliu is launched. The sassy man sets to putting sweet songs on his singles, such as "Le Manège Désenchanté" on the B-side to Ivanohé in 1965. He also participates in the French-Brazilian adventure of Les Masques, with an album that has become a cult item thirty years later. Within a few weeks, it's in the bag: three 45s are released by Barclay, along with a first LP, Amour Amitié (1970), on which he appears sensitive and very forthcoming with stories about himself. This LP has little success, just like the following singles, including Marie En Provence (1974). No success either for the second album "Attends" (1972), either. He loses Barclay's trust and now only has the right to record singles, on a quest for a hit. Three more 45s and finally comes the supreme misunderstanding: "Qui C'est Celui-Là" (1973). Millions were sold, and the label improvises an album made up of the previous 45s. A dark period follows, during which he finds himself torn between the euphoria of success and its vanity, between the love he gets and the reasons given, between Paris and Provence, between his wife and other women. Marie, too often abandoned and sick of egocentricity, leaves for good; he flees to India, gets lost, reinvents himself and releases a series of three dark, light albums. After the 1980s, that was it. During the 1990s, his music takes a South-American direction. He hardly releases anything until 2003. Pierre Vassiliu dies from Parkinson's disease in 2015. CD version includes 36-page booklet.

GALILEO 7, THE Tear Your Minds Wide Open! LP+CD
"Prior perception is a right 'nause, especially when it comes to The Galileo 7. This Kentish quartet have now been kicking out keen psych-pop nuggets since 2010, over the course of four albums and several 45s, but vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Allan Crockford's illustrious past and parallel present, as bassist with a roll call of the greatest British bands of the past 30+ years -- The Prisoners, The James Taylor Quartet, The Prime Movers, The Solarflares, Graham Day & The Forefathers -- seems to have, weirdly, done 'em no favours. And in an age when peeps of a certain age are going goo-goo googly-eyed over the XTC back catalogue, rediscovering all manner of 60s psych-pop and garage treats, and lionising such modern combos as Thee Oh Sees and Tame Impala, that The Galileo 7 haven't reaped comparable plaudits seems just plain stoopid."

KALKBRENNER, FRITZ Drown CD
Fritz Kalkbrenner's fifth album marks a new chapter. It is the first of his albums not to feature his vocals. Freeing himself from the song approach with which he first made a name for himself, he is now focusing on the pure sound of the house music that he discovered as a young man in the Berlin club scene. With hit singles such as "Get A Life" or "Back Home", Fritz Kalkbrenner has played a part in forming our modern understanding of electronic music today. After Sky And Sand alongside his brother Paul (BPCWL 002EP, 2010) as well as four successful albums, two of which reached the Top 10 of the German album charts, Fritz Kalkbrenner is now heading in a different musical direction. In the spring of 2017, Fritz dusted off his old drum machines and his Jupiter 8 and immersed himself in the sounds that first brought him to electronic music twenty years ago and which were to form the basis for his present album Drown. At the beginning of his career it was about establishing himself through a new approach for Fritz. Now it is about celebrating those sounds and their liberating effect on our consciousness. The focus is electronic music as Fritz Kalkbrenner first got to know it in the German capital's now legendary techno and house clubs as an impressionable young man. The cut, that leaving out the now so familiar baritone voice represents, opens the door to a whole world of electronic music, which is suitable for home listening as well as for the club. There are no confining conventions on these 12 tracks and at times one could also say no restraint. Fritz Kalkbrenner indulges in his fascination for dub techno, in clear and dominant house arrangements and also in anthemic melodies. Fritz underlines this new beginning, which is at the same time a reflection on his own beginnings and his own origins, by choosing not to appear on the album's artwork himself this time. Cover art is the work of Fritz's grandfather, the famous East German painter Fritz Eisel -- its title is "Winterabend (winter evening) in M." and it was created in 1990, when Fritz was nine years old.

GAINES, CHARLES Manifestos 2 CD
Dog W/A Bone present the release of Charles Gaines's Manifestos 2. Charles Gaines is highly regarded as both a leading practitioner of conceptualism and an influential educator at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Gaines is celebrated primarily for his photographs, drawings, and works on paper that investigates systems, cognition, and language. His early experiments examined the roles that systems and rule-based procedures play in the construction of forms, objects, and meaning. In creating Manifestos 2, Charles translated language from four influential speeches or manifestos into musical notation: Malcolm X's last public speech, made in 1965 in Detroit's Ford Auditorium; Peace, Power, Righteousness: An Indigenous Manifesto (1999), by Canadian Mohawk scholar and activist Taiaiake Alfred; Indocumentalismo Manifesto -- an Emerging Socio-Political Ideological Identity (2010), by Raúl Alcaraz and Daniel Carrillo; and the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen, written by French activist and writer Olympe De Gouges in 1791. Establishing a relationship between the structures of language and music, Gaines has used a rule-based system, substituting each letter with its corresponding musical note (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) and treating each letter without an equivalent note as a silent musical rest. The scores were then arranged for multiple instruments by Los Angeles composer and Opera Povera director Sean Griffin. As a result, Manifestos 2 explores the ways in which the emotive properties of music affect the content of the manifestos and their interpretation. For the performance, Griffin conducted a nine-piece ensemble, bringing the scores to life. Composed by Charles Gaines; Arranged and conducted by Sean Griffin/Opera Povera. Manifestos 2 was recorded live at REDCAT Los Angeles, December 9th 2015. Personnel: Jonah Levy - trumpet; Joelle Lamarre - soprano; Richard Valitutto - piano; Alison Bjorkedal - harp; Emily Call - violin; Madeline Falcone - violin; Melinda Rice - viola; Betsy Rettig - cello; Scott Worthington - bass.

LEMER QUINTET, PETER Local Colour LP
ESP-Disk' present a vinyl reissue of Peter Lemer Quintet's Local Colour, originally released in 1968. British pianist Peter Lemer studied with Jaki Byard, Paul Bley, and Bill Dixon. His lengthy and distinguished career has found him in a wide variety of settings. As an avant-garde jazz pianist, he recorded with Spontaneous Music Ensemble; in the jazz fusion realm, he was a member of Gilgamesh and Paraphernalia; as a progressive rock keyboardist, he played with Gong, Baker Gurvitz Army, the Mike Oldfield Group, Seventh Wave, and In Cahoots. Sideman credits include work with Annette Peacock, Harry Beckett, and more. Surprisingly, Local Colour -- his debut recording -- is Lemer's only album as a leader. Recorded in London in 1966, it belongs in the collection of anyone who cares about the British jazz scene, and not only because of Lemer's talents. Everyone in this quintet went on to notable achievements. This was sax great John Surman's recording debut; he is now arguably the premiere British jazz saxophonist. Chances to hear the also scintillating sax sound of the more obscure Nisar Ahmad Khan (AKA George Khan) in a jazz context are much rarer, though near the end of 2017, Emanem released an excellent two-disc compilation of concert recordings, and some may remember his appearance on Robert Wyatt's Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975) and his work with Cream lyricist Pete Brown and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Drummer Jon (then going by John) Hiseman had already established himself on the British jazz scene by co-founding the New Jazz Orchestra in 1964; two years after the Local Colour session he started jazz-rock band Colosseum, and he even collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the musical Cats. Bassist Tony Reeves had had a hit single in 1965 with Sounds Orchestral ("Cast Your Fate to the Wind"); after a brief stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Reeves joined Hiseman in Colosseum; he was also a member of Greenslade and Curved Air. Together, they make a sort of inside/outside jazz that doesn't abandon themes and harmony but is still quite freewheeling when it wants to be. A seminal album of British avant-jazz. Personnel: Nisar Ahmad (George) Khan - tenor saxophone; John Surman - baritone and soprano saxophones , bass clarinet; Peter Lemer - piano; Tony Reeves - bass; Jon Hiseman - drums. YONEZAWA/MASA KAMAGUCHI/KEN KOBAYASHI, MEGUMI Boundary CD
Japanese musicians Megumi Yonezawa, Masa Kamaguchi, and Ken Kobayashi present Boundary. The pianist and drummer live in New York City and often collaborate; the bassist lives in Madrid but comes to New York City twice a year for a month each time. The producer heard them at Manhattan jazz bar Tomi Jazz and immediately booked a session to capture their magic before Masa Kamaguchi left town. Megumi Yonezawa, from Hokkaido, earned multiple awards while studying performance and composition at Berklee, then joined Greg Osby's group on Jason Moran's recommendation and can be heard with him on the Blue Note album Public (2003). Other credits include work with David Liebman, George Garzone, Sam Newsome, and many more. In 2016 the Fresh Sound New Talent label released her debut album, A Result Of The Colors. But none of these credits reflect the freedom with which she plays on Boundary. Kamaguchi, also from Hokkaido, has the most recording credits (upwards of 30) in the trio, ranging from Ahmed Abdullah's Actual Proof (CIMP, 1999) to a series of tribute albums with Vinnie Sperrazza and Jacob Sacks. Inspired to play bass after hearing Jaco Pastorius albums, he studied with Gary Peacock student Yoshio Ikeda, then moved to Boston to attend Berklee, followed by a dozen years in New York City performing and recording with ESP star Sonny Simmons, David Murray, Charles Gayle, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Frank Kimbrough, and even Toots Thielemans. Kobayashi, who put the trio together, hails from Tokyo, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in art criticism and art history from Tama Art University. After moving to New York, he expanded his knowledge at the Drummer's Collective. He can also be heard on Jan (2014) with bassist Jochem van Dijk and Nine Stories (2016) with Takeshi Asai. Recorded at Park West Studios on June 4, 2017 by Jim Clouse. Personnel: Megumi Yonezawa - piano; Masa Kamaguchi - bass; Ken Kobayashi - drums. Cover art by Kiichiro Adachi. Liner notes by Matthew Shipp.

SHANTEL The Bucovina Club Years 2CD
With this open-minded approach, Shantel is the audible side of a different Germany. He is the first to have injected a cosmopolitan sound into the local pop culture. In his case, migration can be heard and danced to. He plays musical treasures from South-Eastern Europe, the Middle East, or the Mediterranean in a new context, making it possible to experience intuitively the culture it originated in. His method is cultural sampling: taking things out of their context and putting them into a new one. Club culture as a concept of permanent development, not as a museum in which to repeat the same, eternally -- like in Berlin, where thousands of tourists wait in front of Berghain so as to be able to experience the predictable. On the 30th anniversary of Club Guerilla (1997), Shantel opens a new chapter on his never-ending tour under the heading: Shantology: 30 Years of Club Guerilla. Part one of the Shantology trilogy appears in the form of The Bucovina Club Years. The albums will be full of unpublished newly recorded and "well hung" material that will impressively highlight the timeless hit quality of his music. A review? No, more a retrospective look forward. This disco partisan likes things exciting, and is always good for surprises. The double-CD has 34 mixes, songs from an exciting era beginning in the late 1990s and extending to 2007. Keep those peepers pealed for the rest of the trilogy. Features Tropkillaz, Haaksman & Haaksman, Mahala Rai Banda, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Goran Bregovic, Jewish Monkeys, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Ian Oliver, Binder, Kriegelstein Boban Markovic Orkestar, Friends Of Boban, Taraf De Haidouks, DJ Click Vs. PASSETO & GUI TAVARES, EDU Noite Que Brincou De Lua LP
Far Out Recordings present the first official vinyl reissue of Edu Passeto and Gui Tavares's Noite Que Brincou De Lua: a super rare and largely unheard masterwork of MPB, originally released in 1981. Disciples of the Clube da Esquina movement, pioneered by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges, Edu and Gui mixed psychedelic folk, jazz, bossa, and rock for an album of soulful, dreamy Brazilian pop, with stunning arrangements and lush vocal harmonies. Having first met performing on the music festival circuits of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, it wasn't long before Edu and Gui struck up a thriving song writing partnership and close friendship. The duo's motivation stemmed from a desire for social and political change, during what turned out to be the final years of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Prior to recording, Edu and Gui had to tread carefully with their lyrics, which had to be submitted to the federal censorship authorities before release. Their first application was rejected after the lyrics were deemed to contain too much direct social criticism. "Profome" (translated "Pro-hunger"), a song characteristically bittersweet in tone, was initially a matter of fact portrayal of the desperately poor social conditions many people in Brazil faced at the time. Back to the drawing board, Edu and Gui, like many persecuted artists from this era had to refine their lyrics to convey their message more subtly. It took the best part of a year to complete the album, with Edu and Gui saving every scent they could spare from gigging and hitchhiking the 100km to each session from their home in Campinas, so that they'd have enough money to pay for studio time in Abertura Studios, São Paulo. Although the album gained a respectable amount of radio play in the years that followed, it's remained in relative obscurity, despite its spellbinding qualities, evident on tracks like "Sabiá Na Palmeira", a sweet Brazilian rare-groove with shades of Leroy Hutson, and the psych-folk tinged "Seguir", which harks to the dreamiest moments of Milton Nascimento and Marcos Valle. Edu and Gui called time on their musical partnership in 1986 when Gui moved to Rio De Janeiro, but they remained close friends until Edu sadly passed away in 2008 after a series of health complications. Remastered from the original ½-inch tapes. 180 gram vinyl.

SILVER DICK Silver Dick LP
"Fantastic debut LP by a Manchester trio who stand at the vanguard of Britain's new new thing. Playing this record, we recall the raw excitement we felt a quarter century ago when bands like Skullflower, A Band, R!!!S!!!, and the Shadow Ring were reinventing the shape of the UK sub-underground. Silver Dick is made up of guitarists Kate Armitage and Martin Greenwood, and drummer Joincey. They've all been involved in other projects (from Inca Eyeball to Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura), but there's a very special jumble to the sound they've found with Silver Dick. Like Mosquitoes, they have a way of shaping basic rock instrumentation to create something extraordinary and strange, really only comparable (in our limited experience) to the early work of the legendary New York band, Mars. The guitars wind outwards in sprawls that suggest melodies rather than outlining them. Kate's vocals have a hypnotized feel, as though they were being done by one of the actresses in Herzog's Heart of Glass (1976). And the percussion manages to sound clatterous while still maintaining the ability to keep things moving forward in a jagged line. The results are a delirious mix, full of secret information, and highlighted by the use of anonymous 'small instruments' of all sorts. If this is the beginning of a revolution, then bring it the fuck on." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

LOS LICHIS & PAKITO BOLINO Savage Lichis Religion: El Ultimo Grito LP
"Unbridled live match-up, recorded in November 2016 in an Oaxacan gallery, pitting Mexico's most brutal art collective (Los Lichis) against the fractured French brain behind le Dernier Cri (Pakito Bolino). Many don't realize it, since Pakito's insane artwork and silkscreened books are so overwhelming, but he's also a guitarist and singer. We're hoping to reissue some of the musical work he did with his band Mug in the near future. But that's not what we're talking about here. Savage Lichis Religion is a wonderful extension of the brilliance they showed on Dog (FTR 229LP, 2016), blending noise, psych, prog, experimental whatsis and all else into a totally batshit free-rock stew. This is a classic of vents-burst aesthetic demolition. It would be easy to sell test pressings as some lost, unreleased piece of the Futura RED series. It's hard for a mere mortal (who wasn't there) to pick out exactly what it is that Pakito adds to the chaos. We're assuming it's the gut-pricking guitar feedback that squeedles up from the depths, but no matter what it is he's doing, all we can say is KEEP DOING IT. Pakito also did the eye-pleasing cover art and insert for the LP. Thanks. And hate to end on a bummer, but we'll dedicate this release to the memory of José Luis Rojas, a long-time member of Los Lichis who died at the end of 2017. Long may his memory burn." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

Kicking things off is Eindhoven's Albert Van Abbe, whose wide-open soundscapes and searching synths evoke an emotional impact that goes far beyond mere tools. Low-key producer SP-X appears on the flipside, ready to get lost deep within layers of hypnotic loops. TOMORROW WE SAIL The Shadows CD
The Shadows is the new album from Leeds-based six-piece Tomorrow We Sail. Building on their debut release For Those Who Caught the Sun in Flight (GZH 049CD, 2014) over the course of three years, this new work combines perfectly the soaring atmospherics, gorgeously intertwined vocal harmonies, and dramatic shifts in tone and dynamics that have come to characterize Tomorrow We Sail's sound. Yet, there is a new sense of urgency here. Very much an album of its time, The Shadows draws upon the same sense of connection to both past and present that defined its precursor but features storytelling that's even more defiant and deeply personal. Like its predecessor, the record features seven songs but from the chiming guitars of opening track "Side By Side", it is clear that the stately pace of For Those Who Caught the Sun in Flight has made way for a far more dynamic and driving energy; perhaps best captured in the righteous anger of "The Ghost Of John Maynard Keynes". Tomorrow We Sail still invoke a keen sense of measured grace in their songwriting -- from the sweeping, elegiac title track, through to the sparse, restrained, yet haunting beauty of "Winifred" and "To Sleep". Urgent, yet assured, The Shadows demands your attention. Personnel: Ella Blake - vocals, guitar, piano, harmonium, harp; Angela Chan - viola, violin, vocals; Matt Clarke - guitar, keyboard, Hammond organ, glockenspiel, vocals; Alistair Hay - drums, percussion; Tim Hay - vocals, guitar, piano; Tom Ilett - bass guitar, vocals.

HOOKWORMS Pearl Mystic CD
Originally released in 2013. For a while now Leeds five-piece Hookworms have been terrorizing headlining bands across northern England and beyond, not through histrionics or gimmick, but through sheer sonic velocity and emotive intent. Often bracketed among the latest wave of psychedelic rock currently appearing in pockets around the UK, this tag is somewhat of a misnomer for a band whose use of repetition and reverb is not to open the third dimension or for some sort of flower-power escapism. Pearl Mystic is an absolutely thunderous statement of intent for Hookworms after a portentous couple of years of live shows and limited releases. The album's themes focus on a deeply personal narrative surrounding a lost relationship and a battle with depression that at its worst brought about, as the group's vocalist MJ puts it "a half-hearted suicide attempt". Thus songs like "Away/Towards" possess a gargantuan build-and-release infectious energy that juxtaposes with a subtext of a bi-polar approach to coping with loss. "Preservation", too, is in keeping with the group's live shows, though deals with existentialism, whilst several Raymond Carver influences are scattered in and among the bold textures of sound. "In Our Time" is perhaps the closest thing to escapism on the album, about a hill MJ would cycle up near Otley in Yorkshire after the end of his relationship, because it possessed his favorite view in the world. "Since We Had Changed" meanwhile is almost mantra-like in its constancy, new percussive elements joining those already on the record, whilst "What We Talk About" returns full circle to the first track's themes of depression, and emerges from mixed field recordings including a backwards taping of a Hare Krishna lecture played down the studio corridor. Certainly the production is lush, erring on the lo-fi side but contrasting that with a sense that every element has been pored over and deeply considered. Indeed, the most impressive thing about Hookworms is that, through this torrent of emotion, through their wild motorik and their thick slabs of noise that threaten to spill over, there's always the sense that they're in control of it all, so committed are they to this catharsis that they refuse to throw any of it to chance. Recorded and produced in MJ's own Suburban Studios.

SAUCEDO, RICK Heaven Was Blue 2LP
2018 repress. First ever legit vinyl reissue of Rick Saucedo's mind-expanding, one-man, multi-tracked private press miracle in sound from 1978. Master tape sound; original artwork; includes insert with interview with Saucedo and detailed liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Got Kinda Lost/Ugly Things). Heaven Was Blue drifts in the same sonic milieu as fellow travelers in '60s square peg joy Darius, Marcus, D.R. Hooker (without the lounge allusions), or late period psych adventurers Michael Angelo and Bobb Trimble -- and his concentration and vision equals or exceeds these international underground heroes. Rick Saucedo is an internationally-known Elvis tribute artist, actor, and singer-songwriter from Chicago. In 1978, after some years of doing his Elvis show, he decided he wanted to have his own identity, and recorded an album with his own songs, influenced by The Beatles and Pink Floyd. All instruments on the album were played by Rick with help from a couple of friends. Songs like "Reality," which was written in a graveyard just after the passing of Mr. Presley, or "In My Mind," which dates back to 1967, written just after Sgt. Pepper had come out, are prime examples of dreamy acid psych with Lennon-esque vocals, lysergic guitars, and studio effects. There's also a couple of fuzz rockers with a strong '50s vibe, and then there's the album centerpiece: the impressive 18-minute "Heaven Was Blue" suite, which Rick envisioned as an "acid trip dream." In words of Patrick Lundborg, "Saucedo pulls it off. Somehow like how you turn the wheels on a kaleidoscope, new melodies, guitar figures and arrangements emerge out of the old ones every three minutes, each sequence more swirling and enchanting that the last, with a sense of progression throughout." This expanded reissue offers a full extra album of bonus tracks: "Oh My God" was the conclusion to "Reality" and "In My Mind," recorded in 1978 but omitted from the original album at the last moment. Previously unreleased on vinyl until now. "Baby in the Sand" and "It Burns Again Today" were written during the Heaven Was Blue sessions but went unrecorded until 1991; they're terrific sitar-drenched melodic psych in the same vein as the original album. Previously unreleased on vinyl until now. And there's also both sides of the post-album single Reality/History Makin' - Country Shakin', which featured different mixes and an alternate mix of "Reality." These tracks were originally released as promo 45s in very limited quantities.

WEDGE Killing Tongue CD
Following the buzz of Wedge's debut (2014), the group now unveils their eagerly awaited follow-up Killing Tongue... and it truly kills. Although also deeply rooted in the rock n' roll of the late '60s and early '70s, this album clearly is a strong progression from its precursor, presenting a multicolored spectrum of sounds and more diverse songwriting. Power trio, untypical arrangements and instruments like electric sitar, clavinet, and harpsichord among others, are accompanying especially some of the new psychedelia soaked tunes. But of course you can expect plenty of good old fuzz guitar and Hammond organ driven material as well. Killing Tongue was recorded and mixed at LowSwing Studios in Berlin by Guy Sternberg and mastered by Brian Lucey at Magic Garden Mastering in California/USA. Killing Tongue is the sophomore album for this Berlin based vintage retro '70s band. RIYL: Led Zeppelin, Wolfmother, Deep Purple, The Raconteurs, Humble Pie, The Black Crowes, Black Sabbath.

Although two pieces (Shepp's workout on piano on the ballad 'Sylvia' and his recitation on 'The Wedding') are departures, the quintet sounds particularly strong on Herbie Nichols' 'The Lady Sings the Blues' and 'Wherever June Bugs Go' while Shepp's ballad statement on 'In a Sentimental Mood' is both reverential and eccentric." -- All Music Guide

"It was my intention to couple, in this album, the poignancy of the blues and the jubilant irreverence of a marching band returning from a funeral. It is my interpretation of a slave and neo-slave experience; rather like the feeling of being subjected to a 'haunt.' But the victims have their ghosts too. SIMPLY SAUCER Cyborgs Revisited 2LP
"Simply Saucer's Cyborgs Revisited is an explosive time capsule from one of the great Canadian cult rock 'n' roll groups. Formed in Hamilton, Ontario, these sci-fried proto-punks created a sound fusing Hawkwind, The Kinks, Pink Fairies, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, and the omnipresent Velvet Underground. Originally recorded from 1974-1975, the album became a critically revered classic when it was finally unearthed in 1989 by Mole Records. Now, In The Red is proud to release the definitive, remastered double album edition featuring new liner notes by band biographer Jesse Locke, unseen images, and the complete live recordings available as a second album for the first time ever. As a means to escape his oppressive experiences while living in a practice space surrounded by biker gangs, singer and fretboard-shredding guitarist Edgar Breau wrote a set of songs filled with dystopian visions of the future, conjuring metalloid thugs, Eva Braun's cyanide love affair, and 'dancing the mutation.' With nimble-fingered bassist Kevin Christoff, clatterwauling drummer Neil DeMerchant, and electronic cosmonaut John 'Ping Romany' LaPlante (Breau's foster brother and answer to Pere Ubu's Allen Ravenstine), his lyrics were launched into a sonic supernova. Their first recording session took place in the basement of brothers Bob and future superstar producer Daniel Lanois and was initially intended as a demo. Naturally, interest was non-existent for the sneering six-song set. It's shocking how anyone could have overlooked 'Bullet Proof Nothing,' an undeniably catchy VU-swiping anthem for the used, abused, and confused. Shelving these sessions, the band ascended into the future with 15-year-old drummer Tony Cutaia. This set off a series of gigs before the band touched down on the roof of a local shopping center! Following their 2006 reformation, Simply Saucer continue to tour and perform to ecstatic fans while being celebrated with a belated wave of releases, reissues, and documentation, including a rarities compilation, Jesse Locke's book Heavy Metalloid Music: The Story of Simply Saucer (Eternal Cavalier Press), and an upcoming 7-inch. At long lost and at the top of this towering stack, In The Red's expanded reissue of Cyborgs Revisited gives the Canadian cult classic the deluxe treatment it so greatly deserves."

SHARK TOYS Labyrinths LP
"Whether you know it or not, Shark Toys are one of the best bands in LA... and they have been for quite some time. I think the Urinals would agree and now they can finally call them labelmates. Their first single came out back in 2009, but Labyrinths is a far more developed record than that or any of their subsequent releases. Gone are most of Danny Clodfelter's former band members, but not because of some Mark E. Smith-type drama. The turnover is more likely due to nearly a decade passing and life happening. That said, this current line-up is by far the strongest. Drummer Emanuel Farias and bass-man Bill Gray (formerly of The Mae Shi, Man's Assassination Man, and a million other Smell bands) are one of the tightest rhythm sections in 21st century post-punk. They allow Clodfelter to do what he does best: thrash and wail all over his Fender six string. His angular guitar attack is well informed (by thousands of obscure punk and post-punk records) and executed (albeit after no more or less than three beers) and Gray and Farias hold it down so effectively, one might make the incorrect assumption that they're playing sober. This album at times reminds one of Weirdo Rippers-era No Age on Tyvek uppers. There's an occasional sax skronk, piano plink-plunk, and the spare synth squiggle here and there, but more often than not it's a batch of four-on-the-floor pogo-friendly numbers that will have even the most jaded message board lurkers rethinking what the Los Angeles underground has to offer. Shark Toys are proof-positive that the local scene is a hell of a lot deeper than the LA River." --Lance Barresi / Permanent Records

BIRCHALL, NAT Cosmic Language CD
Nat Birchall charts new paths toward spiritual communion, connecting jazz with classical Indian influences guided by the wistful flow of the harmonium. Cosmic Language sees the UK-based saxophonist, composer, and arranger return to Jazzman Records with a cross-cultural approach: an exploration of the parallel musical paths of jazz and Indian ragas. Here he takes influence from spiritual jazz forebears such as Alice Coltrane and Yusef Lateef and introduces the Indian harmonium to his band, where it takes the place of the piano. Making new connections to realize his transcendental ambitions, it's a logical next step in making music as spiritual cleanser. The idea for the album was spawned from a one-off performance at a meditation center, the Maharishi Golden Dome in West Lancashire. Seeking to bring a band set-up that was fitting to the quiet-minded setting, Birchall brought the harmonium with him. A small pump organ, it's an instrument he'd been in possession of for many years but hadn't previously used in his music. Building on the spiritual context of that show, and the associations of that instrument, it led naturally to the musical approach undertaken on the album. Both the album and the show which preceded it were recorded with the same tight-knit group of players which have featured on Birchall's previous albums. All members of the group are part of the same like-minded circle of Manchester-oriented jazz musicians. Birchall has always channeled wide-ranging ideas into music that's simple to understand, and this album is no exception. Album opener "Man From Varanasi" is an ode to Bismillah Khan, one of Birchall's heroes of Indian music who hailed from the northern Indian city named in the title. It also sees him taking cues from the Indian raga tradition which, as with most other traditional Indian music, is a foundation which underpinned Khan's music. Crucially, the ragas tap into the idea of music as a means of spiritual release. Birchall sees spiritual experience as an essential part of day-to-day life: instead of brightly-lit, occasional entertainment in lugubrious concert halls, he considers it an everyday, vital source of inspiration. At a moment where jazz-influenced music is undergoing creative renewal and wider appreciation, it's an important perspective that's found resonance elsewhere.

ANT ORANGE Right There 12"
Ant Orange's third 12" for Karaoke Kalk forms something of a trilogy for the label. The title track grows slowly from soft-tickled keys to a full-bodied groove with airy synths and RnB vocals. "Drunk In The Trunk" shifts down a gear, looping another vocal cut over a lazy, stripped-back wah-wah vibe. Experimental jazz skit "Let That Sink In" has a jerky tempo and carries flashes of light. The meditative arpeggios and sparse drums of "Comfort Zone" lead into the dusky "Muscle Beach" before "Rudis Goes Offline" picks up the tempo. "A Frozen Lake" is chilled by name and by nature.

UN DRAME MUSICAL INSTANTANE Rideau! CD
"Rideau! was Un Drame Musical Instantane's second album, originally released in 1980 on the group's own GRRR label. Since its creation in 1976, featuring Jean-Jacques Birgé, Bernard Vitet and Francis Gorgé, the group has decided to promote collective musical creation, co-signing their albums, which they consider as artworks in themselves, or their live shows which they try to renew every time they play. Un Drame borrowed their sources from rock (synthetizer player Birgé and guitarist Gorgé, both authors of the album, Defense de); jazz (trumpeter Vitet who founded the first free jazz band in France, together with Francois Tusques, as well as Michel Portal who played with many American and European jazzmen); classical modern music; as well as movies or world news; they were the first in France to give a new impetus to live music on silent films. Birgé and Gorgé also recorded a duo album that was mentioned on the infamous Nurse With Wound list, Defense De. On Rideau!, you will hear their wild mix of styles, a very original, unclassifiable, inventive music, which drifts from jazz to electronic music and contemporary music. Remastered in 2016 and with a lot of bonus tracks, amongst them the track that appeared on United Dairies' compilation album In Fractured Silence for the first time in its full length!"

RESIDENTS, THE I Murdered Mommy! CD
"The Residents' soundtrack to a never completed CD ROM game. The 1990s saw The Residents release a series of groundbreaking CD-ROMs. Freak Show was followed up by interactive album Gingerbread Man and then role playing game Bad Day On The Midway. All of these stood head and shoulders above the drivel which increasingly clogged the CD-ROM market and all featured Residential music as an integral part. I Murdered Mommy! would have been no exception. Inscape, the company which had released Bad Day, had some reservations with the proposed concept, 'an interactive game based on the fantasy life of an emotionally abused 13 year old boy' but as the previous title had sold well they green lighted the project. Unfortunately, shortly after this the aforementioned mountain of inferior titles plus the limitations of the medium (poor capacity) caused the bottom to drop out of the market and Inscape went with it. Musically, all that was left of IMM! were some 'sketches'. In 2004, The Residents took those sketches, fleshed them out and released them in a very limited edition on CD. This re-issue is the first time these music pieces have been made available again. Remastered for this re-issue."

NON TOXIQUE LOST Enz Rouge CD
"Non Toxique Lost are one of the most important and equally most underrated bands from Berlin's 1980s industrial scene. In the old days, most of their albums came out on cassette only, they have later been collected onto vinyls and CDs. After the tragic loss of long-time member Steffen Schütze last year, NTL are continuing with their unique vision of music. Harsh electronic beats meet Sea Wanton's blunt political lyrics that are screamed over the Industrial sounds. Like all of NTL's releases, this is also a limited edition so don't wait too long with ordering. If you've never heard of them, it's high time to fill this gap in your music knowledge. If you know them, there's a strong chance you'll love them."

ZEA Crimes Against Pop CD
"Zea is the alter ego of Arnold de Boer, singer with Dutch experimental group The Ex. Someone described his music once as: 'Arnold de Boer deploying guitar and sampler for an almighty bout of crazily high energy songs - urgent lyrics over guitar, roughshod beats and grimy bass lines. Joyfully obstinate, wonderfully bonkers.' Breakpop is another term used for the style, and it is a fitting term as Arnold mixes pop tunes with breakbeats and electronics to create a totally unique hybrid of experimental pop music. The project started in 2000 and has released six albums up to date. Crimes Against Pop gives a perfect overview over this music. For us at Klang the idea to work together came up when we (as big fans of The Ex) went to see Zea perform a solo show in Austria. We were blown away by the strength in the simplicity and asked Arnold immediately if he wanted to work with us. Luckily he agreed, and here is Crimes Against Pop. This album was originally planned to become a release on TOOK but we decided it didn't fit the parameters that made such a release, so here it is on Klang."

FRITH & HARDY FOX, FRED A Day Hanging Dead Between Heaven And Earth CD
"Fred Frith and Hardy Fox met very early in both their careers. Frith released his first solo albums on The Residents' Ralph Records. Many years later, their paths crossed again and they decided to record an album together. A few tunes were created, but the project was shelved for ages until the tracks were rediscovered in 2017 and immediately finished by Frith and former Residents composer Fox. 'It began in Big Sur. Fred Frith and I, sitting naked on two small wooden blocks, legs crossed, hands resting on our knees. A small clearing on a rise above the Pacific Ocean, waves pounding a steady beat against the rocks far below. I had arrived at the Zen retreat the previous afternoon and Fred was one of the first people I ran into. I'd met him in more formal situations at Ralph Records, but we had not previously hung out socially. Fred was not big on talking, so we sat in quiet contemplation. But soon I became aware of a humming sound and realized Fred was singing quietly to himself accompanied by the rhythm of the waves. I whispered, 'What are you singing?' He apologized and whispered back that he was making up melodies. My Walkman was a constant companion and asked if it were okay to record him. He said I could. We grew close over the next couple of days, and when I returned to San Francisco I transferred the waves, the birds, and the singing to a multi-track tape machine and made a collage. Next time Fred came through town I played it for him and we speculated on developing the recordings for some kind of Residents/Frith project. I thought it quite good, but not enough material for an album. No additional work took place, and the project was largely forgotten until, years later, I began cataloging my collection for the new company I'd started, Hacienda Bridge. There it was. Walter Robotka at Klanggalerie contacted Fred who was curious to hear it again after all this time. Fred was enthusiastic, and couldn't wait to resume work on the long-lost recordings.'"

GIBSON, KENNETH JAMES In The Fields Of Nothing CD
Seeking the overwhelming vibration of the genuine sound wave and its profound echo on the soul, Kenneth James Gibson has spent his career experimenting under a variety of aliases like as many brushstrokes to an ever polymorphic palette -- successively releasing as [a]pendics.shuffle, Bell Gardens, Reverse Commuter, dubLoner, Kenneth James G., KJ Gibbs, Bal Cath, Eight Frozen Modules, and Premature Wig... the list is long. Near to two years after his first incursion on Kompakt with his third studio album The Evening Falls (KOMPPA 004CD/LP, 2016), Gibson returns with In The Fields Of Nothing, his second full-length delivery for the Cologne-based imprint. A piece of intricate scales and moods, by turn streaming with the quiet flow of a small meandering rill, then suddenly veering off into an oceanic kind of tumult, In The Fields Of Nothing was conceived as a proper film soundtrack with its rhythmic ebb-and-flow and deep sense of immersion, pulling the strings to an imaginary scenario where the uncanny rubs shoulders with a minute care for the immersion and deep emotional involvement of its whole. Like entangling multiple levels of consciousness through a mille-feuille of textures, piano, and strings as well as a flurry of subtly FX-soaked instrumentals, Gibson reflects on his new album -- created and recorded right after The Evening Falls came out -- as hugely inspired by the lushly forested mountain landscapes of his home region, the bewitching Idyllwild, California. With each track being an essential petal in the narrative corolla figured by Gibson, it's a breathing forest of sounds that deploys, bearing the memories of Kenneth's early morning and late night wanderings in the wild, alone and not, with the ancient trees' vital force for main companion. An attempt at capturing a slice of these ephemeral sensations felt when striding along across the San Jacinto mountains, staring at the star-studded dome or gazing into the quiet horizon at dawn, In The Fields Of Nothing eludes the single genre encapsulation, opting for the all-embracing openness of scope as it hops from droney melodic interplays ("Her Flood") and roomy string-laden folk drifts ("Further From Home") through Ligetian webs of sound ("Thirsty Lullaby", "Fields Of Everything") and poignant threnodies ("Unblinded"), onto sorrowful pop ballads ("Far From Home") and lulling ambient scapes ("To Love A Rotting Piano", "Plastic Consequence"). Essential for fans of Stars Of The Lid, Chuck Johnson, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Visible Cloaks.

Fourth release on Last Drop Records, signed by the London-based Stavrogin. Collectors takes a more subdued approach from his debut on Australian label 3BS. "Sixty Acres" is a juddering mass of static textures and penetrative low-end, forcing itself to a crumbled close. Title track "Collectors" is something like the afterglow. Weary and destitute, the track stumbles through heatwave-soaked atmospheres, fragmented voices stuttering like a malfunctioning android. "Are These Actual Miles?" is perhaps the most direct, with its tremors of noise punctuated by a rhythmic pulse. Italian duo Ichinen reducing the track to a warbling, dead-eyed drum workout on their remix.

WATERS, MUDDY Live At Rockpalast 2CD/2DVD
"Muddy Waters had a great ear for talent and accordingly the formation which you will hear on this DVD was one of the very best: The pianist Pinetop, the drummer Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith, the bass player Calvin Jones, the two guitarists Luther 'Guitar Jr.' Johnson and Bob Margolin and the harmonica player Jerry Portnoy. At the Rockpalast recording on December 10, 1978 at Westfalenhalle Dortmund Muddy Waters still was at the height of his creative power, his mighty vocals and his splendid charisma on stage fascinated the audience. Muddy's guitar playing on the Fender Telecaster especially comes into full effect with his typical slow blues solos -- and seldom had Muddy such a hot sound as in this TV recording of the WDR. The song selection of the evening consisted of several of his biggest hits which probably are standard discipline of each evening ('Hoochie Coochie Man', 'Walkin' Thru The Park', a superb version of the macho hymn 'Mannish Boy' and, of course, the immortal 'Got My Mojo Workin''), but also less performed titles like 'Soon Forgotten' by St. Louis Jimmy Oden or 'Country Boy', both atmospheric slow blues with slide. When the Muddy Waters Tribute Band appeared at the Rockpalast Open-Air at the Loreley on June 23, 1996 (bonus content on the second DVD), the pianist Pinetop Perkins could unfortunately not travel due to medical reasons and Jerry Portnoy was replaced by blues harper Carey Bell who had already played in Muddy's band in early 1970. All band members switch with the vocals and in 'Gone To Main Street' The Band's Levon Helm is to be heard as a guest singer. Naturally, the repertoire consists mainly of Muddy Waters classics but also songs of Jimmy Reed, two titles that have become known through Albert King and one original composition of the drummer Willie Smith were on the set list."

RED DIRT Red Dirt II CD
"Whilst researching the re-release of the original Red Dirt album a few years back, we became aware of the existence of a second unreleased Red Dirt album. Then purely by chance earlier this year, we stumbled across a box of master tapes hidden from view in the warehouse, which turned out to contain the missing master tapes. Many of the tracks had got as far as being at the 'rough mix' stage whilst a few were missing the vocal tracks. We decided that the tracks were strong enough to release as they are with merely a clean-up and balance of the sound. This is as close to the second missing album we could get, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed with what you hear. A fine mix of psychedelic folk and blues rock so typical of its period. This previously unreleased Red Dirt album features three bonus tracks by Red Dirt guitarist Steve Howden's subsequent band Jude."

VA Interferencias Vol. 1: Spanish Synth Wave 1980-1989 CD
At the dawn of synth pop, an army of machines was ready to inflict a strange defeat on rock. Traditional music from that era could be set ablaze thanks to the new artistic channels that the democratic transition in Spain had forged. Synth pop settled in the urban centers of major cities across the Iberian Peninsula; a feverish start to one of the few labels that can be claimed as genuinely Spanish: tecno pop. An Iberian version of the minimal synth sound that was all the rage in the late '70s and early '80s, a style which encompassed a range of subgenres, some incredibly dark, minimalist, and almost cybernetic. Initially, there was total mimesis, and key references came from Europe, Japan, and the United States. Records by Cabaret Voltaire, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Residents, or Devo were cherished. But film, poetry, and fashion were also strong influences clearly reflected in the songs of the emerging groups. Many swam the demo tape oceans, without releasing a single record, victims of the record companies' ignorance, although shortly after this rich seam would be exploited to the extent that bands that had only played a couple of times were signed up. This collection seeks to redress the lack of media impact that some of these groups received. These groups released records of the same standard as some foreign releases, even though they lacked technical media and had less musical knowledge. Boundless enthusiasm and energy eventually ushered in the new wave, charged with synthetic rhythms, where guitars took second place to a whole range of synthesizers and drum machines. Many projects scraped by and signed to small labels or set up their own label. Interferencias offers the opportunity to discover tracks that had little impact when they were first released and were then overlooked and even forgotten by most people. The range on this collection is impressive and the songs are evocative and sincere offerings, grounded by kilos of coherence and brimming with infectious melodies and catchy, arithmetic rhythms. Features Todotodo, Oviformia Sci, Última Emoción, WAQ,Justine, Séptimo Sello, Líneas Aéreas, MD, Lavabos Iturriaga, Vocoder, Metal Y Ca, La Mode, Aviador Dro, Kalashnikov, Tomates Eléctricos, Metropakt, El Humano Mecano, Diseño Corbusier, Los Iniciados, and Bola/Banda Electrónica. NILSSON, MOLLY The Travels CD
"The Travels represents a signpost in the continuing journey that is the songs of Berlin-based artist Molly Nilsson. Starting out by hand-dubbing CDRs and forging a singular path in the global pop underground, Nilsson's art has grown to the extent where hers is a precise songwriting devoid of unnecessary flourish. Her songs are perfect silhouettes of feelings everyone shares but that few can articulate with such heart-rending, icy pathos. Journeys offer change -- the possibility of renewal -- and on this album, Nilsson's resonant voice is found curling around a new sense of optimism and wide-eyed discovery that was only alluded to in her previous work. Songs like 'Dear Life' might be spiked with a barbed sense of the dejected, but the presiding feeling is one of optimism, of being in love with life despite a shield of cynicism. 'Dirty Fingers' brings a melancholy recognizable from previous work but with an incessant beat and ecstatic underpinning. In case the listener missed it, 'The Power Ballad' brings an endearing sincerity to proceedings that also offers a tantalizing question: can you be skeptical about love but still be bewitched? On this fifth long-player, Nilsson's perspective is challenged and manipulated by changes in environment and psychological space: like any other traveller the protagonist brings their own set of values and emotional states to new places, coloring them with a wash of subjectivity. Based loosely on Marco Polo's 'Travels' and reading like a map of the protagonist's geographical and inner journey, this album reveals new places and new emotions that are never the same to the beholder."

ORQUESTA EL MACABEO Salsa Macabra LP
Peace & Rhythm present a reissue of Orquesta El Macabeo's Salsa Macabra, originally released in 2010. When Salsa Macabra was first released on an unsuspecting public in Orquesta El Macabeo's home country of Puerto Rico, it generated an aural and intellectual charge of electricity that challenged the status quo of mainstream, romantic, and popular folkloric Puerto Rican music, and flaunted accepted norms of what constituted contemporary high-budget commercial salsa and even "salsa dura" (hard salsa). Independently produced in a small studio in the band's home turf of Trujillo Also, the record's irreverent attitude, indie spirit, and brash playing was a shot across the bow to a market that had grown complacent with "bedroom" and Teflon pop salsa that was the norm in an industry overwhelmed by the success of reggaeton and bachata. The lo-fi Goth aesthetics, sense of irony, and dark humor, as well as social critique that permeate through Salsa Macabra connects them to the DIY, metal, and punk cultures, a musical kinship that at this point has become a cliché when describing Macabeo, even though they first deemed themselves as "rockeros con guille de salseros" on this album (a Puerto Rican slang way of saying they are rocker "wannabe" salsa players). Salsa Macabra's raw "garage salsa" -- all originals -- tells stories of love and heartbreak, of rackets and tricksters, of pride and deception, nightlife and consumerism. To this day the band is known for their uncompromising commitment to the DIY aesthetic and independent business model and with every passing year their audience and reputation grows, mainly because they have managed to hit a nerve, connect to salseros craving that old-school sound and message but also something that speaks to their own contemporary experiences in an unadulterated and honest manner. This then is the album that started it all, with several tunes that have become anthems in the ensuing years. The reason for reissuing the album now is that originally it was not mixed and mastered, and the album came out in an extremely limited pressing, with the wrong artwork. The recording has now been properly mastered, with a quality vinyl pressing, the original artwork restored, an insert that features full credits and lyrics, and new liner notes on the back.

BAYLE, FRANCOIS Tremblements... LP
François Bayle on Tremblement de terre très doux (1978); first performance on March 19, 1979 at the Grand Auditorium of Radio-France, Ina-GRM's Cycle Acousmatique: "The familiar generates the strange. These rolls, these hums, these sudden rushes; this song, these peaceful circlings; these sudden outbursts, these returns to quiescence -- what do they remind us of? This piece's trajectory could also be a representation of the dramatic unfolding of a day -- of a life -- from sunrise ('Climate 1') to night-time ('Landscape 4') via restless encounters, transitions ('Transit 1', '2', and '3') that announce the drama climaxing in 'Landscape 3', before reaching its denouement in "Climate 4"... A whole concrete 'story'. The subterranean properties inherent to listening gently shift our ideas..."François Bayle on Toupie dans le ciel (1979); first performance on January 21, 1980 at the Grand Auditorium of Radio-France, Ina-GRM's Cycle Acousmatique: "A wave is swaying on two minors thirds. This constantly uniform yet constantly varied swaying revolves in a swarm of sharp designs that blink on and off in a layer of growing density and mobility. Distance, speed, pressure, density, temperature, color, intensity, are the 'themes' of the 27 short interconnected cells flowing together though this seemingly unified movement. Occasionally, a breach in the texture reveals skies dotted with little comets. In the center, a slow gliding picks up the distant harmonics of a basic chord. Toward the end, this gliding returns with a fiery burst. Fine lines and whirs are generated from the song of a spinning antique top. To end on a lighter note the title Toupie dans le ciel -- 'Spinning Top in the Sky' reminds us of 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' by The Beatles as well as Lucy, the oldest Australopithecine (three million years), our African grandmother in the Erosphere... The overall title Erosphere alludes to the desire inherent to the listening experience, and to the very primitive cues that sustain the auditory attention and are the basis of all musical pleasure."Cut by CGB at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, June 2017; Digital transfer by Jonathan Fitoussi; Translations by Valérie Vivancos; Layout by Stephen O'Malley; Coordination GRM - Daniel Teruggi and François Bonnet; Executive Production - Peter Rehberg.

ZANESI, CHRISTIAN Grand Bruit/Stop ! l'horizon LP
Christian Zanési on Grand Bruit (1991): "The great mobile sound bodies have an ordinary yet amazing ability to place the listener-traveler within, as if he or she was inside a giant double bass, in this case a train stroked by a double bow: the rails and the air. In 1991, I explored this phenomenon during my daily commute from the studio to my home. I used only a 21 minutes recording and treated it as a single sound object. I then processed and enhanced it as a photographer would have done, immersing it in successive 'baths'. The title I chose for this singular form was Grand Bruit."Christian Zanési on Stop ! l'horizon (1983): "Saturday morning, nine o'clock as I reach the studio. No one here. I only turn on the spotlights as the fluorescent tubes are too noisy. I switch the power on, shut the door, unplug the telephone. I then switch the mixing desk on, which sends an electronic impulse into the amps. The four speakers react individually with a very brief and low hiss. A kind of presence. I haven't listened to anything since the evening before and my ear is refreshed by a night's sleep. I feed the original mix into the master recorder and sit down in the center. Remote control: PLAY With the first sound I close my eyes. The studio instantly vanishes. Another place, a much larger space opens up. I enter it. I have the very distinct feeling that music is merely a 'great noise', chiseled inside with a thousand details. It opens up like a living organism to let my hearing wander across it. A magnetic relation quickly occurs and all the sounds that constitute this great noise draw me towards the East. I accept this direction. Later, much later, I reach a distant point on the horizon which pulls me towards it."Cut by CGB at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, June 2017; Digital transfer by Jonathan Fitoussi; Translations by Valérie Vivancos; Layout by Stephen O'Malley; Coordination GRM - Daniel Teruggi and François Bonnet; Executive Production - Peter Rehberg.

BLEGVAD, PETER Go Figure CD
"After 19 years, Go Figure marks the Peter Blegvad Trio's return to the studio, in supernal form and now a quintet with Karen Mantler and Bob Drake. Peter, John and Chris first met when Henry Cow was touring with Faust, in 1972. Peter was on secondment from his own group Slapp Happy, and in the following year Henry Cow and Slapp Happy merged, making two LPs before they separated again. When John Greaves left Henry Cow in 1976, he joined Peter in New York where they wrote and recorded Kew.Rhone. Peter and John have continued to work together, on-and-off, ever since. After making two solo LPs for the still vaguely experimental Virgin Records, Peter's next LP, Downtime, was made independently by ReR -- and the core players wound up being the Peter Blegvad Trio. Bob Drake first became involved during the second trio recording, Just Woke Up, which he mixed and mastered. Karen joined the trio in 2002 for a festival in Ferrara. Bob's first stage appearance with the band came ten years later, in 2012, at the RIO festival in Carmaux. ELEPHANT9 Greatest Show On Earth CD
It's not often a "jazz" band take the big step from the club scene to a 1300 capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band. Often being named Norway's best live band -- surely quite rare for an instrumental band -- they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles. On Greatest Show On Earth, their fifth studio album, Elephant9 is back to the core trio of their first two albums; Ståle Storløkken, Nikolai Hængsle, and Torstein Lofthus, three of Norway's finest musicians. The Greatest Show On Earth displays some truly astonishing playing and is a more dynamic, structured and focused album with all tracks clocking in around the six-minute mark. It's also very much a trio effort where all members are equal, and not only a vehicle for a soloist. Ståle Storløkken (keyboards) is widely considered the most inventive keyboard player on the Norwegian scene, his playing with bands like Supersilent, Humcrush, Motorpsycho, Terje Rypdal, and countless others being firm testament to this. Nikolai Hængsle (bass) is since long a member of popular rock group Big Bang as well as Ketil Møster's quartet Møster!, Needlepoint, and Band Of Gold. Torstein Lofthus (drums) is probably the most in demand session drummer in Norway.

CHAMPION Snapshot CD
Having first burst into the public consciousness in 2011 with a slew of anthemic UK funky tracks, Champion has been championed by figureheads like Four Tet and has released music on labels as diverse as Hyperdub, OWSLA, and Butterz. Despite being just 27 years old, he's been DJing and playing out since 2003 and, as a direct result of that exposure, his music is heavily influenced by the lineage of the Jamaican sound system culture in London. Elements of dub and reggae blend with dance-hall drum patterns, garage skip, and a particularly grime-influenced independent outlook all throughout Champion's discography. It's that kind of bass-heavy variety and his open-mindedness that has come to define both the output of his own label, Formula Records, and his latest album, Snapshot, which features collaborations with artists as diverse as Flava D, Royal-T, Jammz, and Four Tet. Also features Dread MC, Shantie, Slick Don, BKAT, Miss Fire, and Jammz.

SOUTH CENTRAL CARTEL South Central Cartel LP
LP version. Snow Dog Records present a reissue of South Central Cartel's self-titled debut album, originally released in 1991. Los Angeles's South Central Cartel were pioneers in the West Coast gangsta rap genre, in the same league as Dr. Dre, NWA, Eazy E, Ice Cube, Compton's Most Wanted, Above the Law, Da Lench Mob, Mac Dre, and Kurupt. South Central Cartel (S.C.C.) was one of the first West Coast groups to gain national popularity in the immediate wake of groundbreaking and controversial releases by NWA and Eazy-E, and they're still etched in hip hop's collective memory for pushing the envelope with their unapologetic embrace of gang affiliation, automatic weapons, violent crime, and prison and car culture. South Central Madness is their debut album, originally released on Pump/Quality Records, with subsequent albums released on Def Jam West in a deal between their G.W.K. (Gangsters Wit Knowledge) imprint and the West Coast division of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons's label. Over a now-classic bed of sample sources (Delfonics, The Temptations, Barry White, Funkadelic, more), with lyrical sample drops of their hip-hop contemporaries (MC Breed, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, NWA, Geto Boys, Big Daddy Kane), lyricists Havoc, Havik, Prodeje, and Young Prodeje along with singer L.V. (later featured on Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise") deliver a solid bridge from hip-hop's established East Coast chart-dominating status quo toward the West Coast-centric "G-Funk era", Crips vs. Bloods subtexts and the definition of what it meant to be hard. Videos for the singles U Gotta Deal Wit Dis (Gangsta Luv)/Ya Getz Clowned (1991) and Papa Was A Rolling Stone (1992) feature up-tempo Havoc and Prodeje in black baseball caps, shades, and curls that Eazy-E should have trademarked, riding and further extending the ominous Compton MC legacy. "Ya Getz Clowned" actually samples MC Breed's "Ain't No Future In Yo' Frontin'", released just months before, tightening a food chain of club/radio DJ/producer sample/remix culture that was evolving fast in 1991. An interesting and maybe still unresolved footnote is that an unrelated up-and-coming duo from Queensbridge named Mobb Deep with members Havoc and Prodigy who would release their debut Juvenile Hell in 1993.

MC BREED & DFC MC Breed & DFC CD
Snow Dog Records present a reissue of MC Breed & DFC's debut album, originally released in 1991. An often-overlooked debut by Flint, Michigan MC Eric Breed, leader of DFC (Da Flint Crew, Dope Flint Connection, Da Funk Clan), who went on to collaborate with Tupac, Too Short, George Clinton, Slum Village, Jazzy Pha, Pimp C, Kurupt, The D.O.C., Hurricane (Beastie Boys), Amp Fiddler, Erick Sermon (EPMD), Bootleg (Dayton Family), and Esham. MC Bred & DFC peaked at #142 on the Billboard 200, #38 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #3 on Top Heatseekers, impressive for an independent debut. The single was also a radio hit, getting run from KMEL in San Francisco to New York, leaving listeners hearing Breed's voice for the first time confused, unable to pin down his neutral accent, Flavor Flav's "to the beat, y'all" stabbing intermittently, and the West Coast-flavored beat confusing matters further. The album relies heavily on James Brown samples ("The Grunt", "Make It Funky", "Funky Drummer", "Funky President"), a can't-miss formula with Breed's voice over the beat, but the standout single from the album, "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'", a certified club anthem, is an inspired take on two already-established sample sources ("Funky Worm" and "More Bounce To The Ounce"), but flipping the Zapp tune differently than listeners were accustomed to, providing a bass-heavy, atonal, lazy, and almost non-music backdrop for Breed's lyrics, which in turn ran a line between incisive, funky and a fast drawl, sounding like an edgier Tone Loc, with apparent influence by EPMD or Audio Two. The end result was the first Midwest-originated "hit" rap record, even the sampled artists (Zapp and the Ohio Players) were from Ohio. A surprisingly apt comparison is Cypress Hill's self-titled sample-heavy debut, also released in August 1991, both feature odes to marijuana, utilize a then-emerging "dusted" sample style, feature audible clicks-and-pops on their sample sources, and were the first major crossover successes from their respective regions. And they're both solid albums, start to finish, with minimal guest features (none). Breed died in 2008 from kidney failure, unexpectedly ending his well-respected career at 12 albums, and after having paved the way for other Midwest artists Eminem, Common, Slum Village, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Proof, D12, and others.

BATTRE LYSS Till Den Strang Som Brast An Att Aldrig Spanna En Bage LP
LP version. Sommor Records present the first ever reissue of Bättre Lyss's Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna En Båge, originally released in 1975. Rare Swedish psychedelic hard and progressive rock with powerful guitar/organ and great melodic vocals, featuring ex-Life member Anders Nordh on guitar. The Bättre Lyss project was born during 1973-74, when mutual friends Rolf Hammarlund (vocals, bass) and Christer Palmquist (vocals, acoustic guitars, piano) started to write songs sung in English. Soon after, the lyrics were changed to Swedish and another friend, drummer, and songwritter Rolf Johansson joined in. That's when they decided to record an album. Helped by some talented friends, including three electric guitar players (among them Anders Nordh of Life fame) and a flute/sax player plus an organist, they registered Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna En Båge on a two-track machine at a state-of-the art studio. The result was stunning and was released as a private pressing in 1975. File next to: November, Life, Saga, Bazar, Silberbart. Master tape sound.

VA Gumba Fire: Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa CD
Soundway present Gumba Fire, a new compilation of rare 1980s South African "bubblegum" and boogie. In 1980s Black South Africa, a local form of pop music evolved as the disco boom died down and slowly mutated. It was often ubiquitously described as bubblegum -- usually stripped-down and lo-fi with a predominance of synths, keyboards, and drum-machines and overlaid with the kind of deeply soulful trademark vocals and harmonies that South African music is famous for. Compilers Miles Cleret (Soundway) and DJ Okapi (Afrosynth Records) present a selection of 18 rare, handpicked 1980s cuts that highlight the period that nestles in between the '70s (where American-influenced jazz, funk, and soul bumped shoulders with local mbaqanga) and the '90s when kwaito and eventually house-music ruled the dancefloors of urban South Africa. Alongside French-Caribbean zouk this kind of music has slowly been making its way into the DJ sets of many of the most open-minded selectors around the world. This compilation is in many ways a sister release to the hugely popular compilation of Nigerian boogie and disco that Soundway released in late 2016: Doing It In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco In 1980s Nigeria. The album takes its name from the band Ashiko's track that also features on the compilation. The term is derived from gumba gumba, the term given to the booming speakers of the old spacegram radios that broadcast music into South Africa's townships and villages. "Gumba Fire" later evolved into a phrase that refers to a hot party. Put this record on and feel the heat! Features The Survivals, Stimela, Hot Soul Singers, Zoom, Ashiko, Monwa & Sun, Ntombi Ndaba, The Black Five, Starlight, Zasha, Sabela, Condry Ziqubu, General Peter Maringa, and Ozila.

NAUCKE, BRETT The Mansion LP
Brett Naucke returns to Spectrum Spools with his sophomore LP for Spectrum Spools following the Seed LP (SP 034LP, 2014) as well as a string of exceptional cassette releases on Umor Rex and Hausu Mountain. The Mansion finds Naucke at the peak of his powers with a fresh array of meticulously composed psychotropic tapestries. Themes based on a childhood home, now a distant memory, reveal a mysterious narrative in mind-bending sonic detail. These complex ideas fuse conflicting states of tension and beauty with an organic acumen, each track a piece of the greater whole. The Mansion is a fine mixture of contemporary concrète structure interlaced with tightly crafted melodic arrangement and hi-fidelity electronic exploration. In addition to his stalwart synthesis, Naucke employs additional personnel featuring vocal duties from Natalie Chami (of Goodwill Smith and TALsounds) and viola sounds from Whitney Johnson (of Matchess). Field recording, piano, and other various instrumentations are also carefully implemented adding a new, deeper dimension to the Naucke oeuvre. With his most realized set of compositions yet, The Mansion finds Naucke at the paragon of his conceptual and sonic ethos with a work that's at once deeply meaningful and profound in its auditory breadth. The Mansion was written and recorded in Chicago, IL between January 2015-February 2017. Mastered at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin by CGB, July 2017.

GUTHRIE, ANNE Brass Orchids LP
Snapshots of an abandoned city. Fragments of song drifting out of basements and across alleyways, muffled conversations. Scrutinized, the "music" disappears -- maybe paracusia? Brass Orchids, Anne Guthrie's second full-length album for Students of Decay, is an entrancing collage of new and old sounds drawn from a variety of beguiling sources. Posthumous contributions from the artist's grandfather, a jazz pianist; obsolete media palimpsests (some vanity, some necessity); tap dancing on a peeling floor... An unsettling and strangely beautiful album -- akin to something on the tip of your tongue, which, before you can name it, slips away into forgetting. Includes download code; Edition of 300.Anne Guthrie is an acoustician, composer, and French horn player living in Brooklyn, New York. She studied Music Composition and English at the University of Iowa and Architectural Acoustics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she completed her Ph.D in 2014. Her music combines her knowledge of acoustics and contemporary composition/improvisation. Her electronic music has focused on exploiting the natural acoustic phenomena of unique architectural spaces through minimal processing of field recordings. Her composition has focused on the orchestration of non-musical sounds, speech in particular. Her French horn playing has focused on electronic processing and extended techniques used in improvisatory settings, as a soloist and with Fraufraulein and Delicate Sen, among others. Her acoustics research has focused on the use of ambisonics for stage acoustics.

COLTRANE/ALICE COLTRANE, JOHN Cosmic Music LP
2018 repress. "John Coltrane transformed the inner architecture of jazz, throughout the mid-1950s and 1960s and long after his premature death at age 40 in 1967. No other American musician could be said to be at the spiritual center of the '60s musical universe as Trane influenced Albert Ayler, La Monte Young, Jimi Hendrix and everybody in between. Cosmic Music, originally self-released by Alice Coltrane in 1968 and later issued by Impulse!, features two tracks ('Manifestation' and 'Rev. King') by John Coltrane's legendary final quintet that were recorded in San Francisco on February 2nd, 1966 and two more ('Lord Help Me To Be' and 'The Sun') from Alice Coltrane's very first session as a bandleader, recorded six months after her husband's passing. 'Manifestation' opens with the group already in mid-flight: Trane's fierce tenor leads the way with Pharoah Sanders' blistering sax and Alice's powerful chords hearing his call. On 'Rev. King,' Trane introduces a lyrical theme and then the composition erupts into fiery incantations, while Jimmy Garrison's bass throbs alongside the propulsive, gravity-defying drumming of Rashied Ali. Foreshadowing her majestic debut, A Monastic Trio, 'Lord Help Me To Be' brings Alice's celestial piano playing and inspired improvisations to the foreground with Sanders, Garrison and drummer Ben Riley rumbling in tow. 'The Sun,' a meditative ballad with subtle urgency, perfectly closes the album's contemplative circle. As John Coltrane recites on the final track, 'May there be peace and love and perfection throughout all creation.' "

JIHA, PARK Communion CD
"I don't want to play only traditional music. I want to play my own music... my own stories." --Park JihaOver the last few years a rising tide of new Korean artists have staked a place in the global music conversation. Groups like Jambinai, Black String and Park Jiha's earlier duo ?[su?m] have created exciting soundworlds that deftly combine the instrumentation and complex expression of Korean traditional music with an array of contemporary sounds such as post-rock, doom metal, downtempo jazz, and classical minimalism. While Park Jiha's most recent musical endeavor, her debut solo album Communion, is another decisive step towards a more personal and forward-looking musical vocabulary, it also is deeply rooted in her traditional music education and background. Jiha's main instrument is the piri, a traditional Korean instrument which is like an oboe. She also plays the saenghwang, a traditional instrument similar to a mouth organ and made of bamboo, the yanggeum (hammered dulcimer), and percussion. Park Jiha started her music career by founding the duo ?[su?m] with Jungmin Seo in 2007 -- after she had finished her musical studies. ?[su?m]'s music, composed with an array of traditional instruments and buoyed by unorthodox musical structures, was an immediate and profound influence on the new Korean music scene. The duo released the album Rhythmic Space: A Pause For Breath in 2010, and ?[su?m] 2nd in 2014. But Park Jiha began to hear a much different music -- one that directly interacted with more distant sound traditions and a more eclectic instrumental palette. Putting ?[su?m] on pause for the moment, she started collaborating with John Bell (vibraphone) and Kim Oki (bass clarinet, saxophone) to create Communion, her first solo album. Originally released in Korea in 2016, the album's compositions are sometimes hushed and other times slowly swelling and dynamic. It skillfully unites hypnotic minimalism and experimental strategies with Park Jiha's distinctive mastery of the piri, saenghwang, and yanggeum. "The Longing of the Yawning Divide" is inspired by the solemnity and resonance of a monastery in Leuven, Belgium. "All Souls' Day" constructs harmony and rhythmic lift between an unlikely grouping of instruments: the yanggeum, piri, saxophone, vibraphone, and the jing. The album's opening composition, "Throughout The Night" is a precise and keening dialogue between the piri and the bass clarinet.

CHARLES/ALMA FURY/OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/OTANI YASUHIRO, XAVIER High Tones For Winter Fashion CD
2002 release. High Tones for Winter Fashion is a collaboration CD, a match-up between French and Japanese established improvisers. Xavier Charles: As a clarinetist, bassist, and DIY enthusiast, Xavier Charles played with several noisy, electronica and sonic poetry activists: Frédéric Le Junter, Martin Tétreault, The Ex, Pierre Berthet, Étage 34, Axel Dörner, Jérôme Jeanmart, John Butcher, Jean Pallandre, Marc Pichelin, Chris Cutler, Martine Altenburger, Camel Zekri, Emmanuelle Pellegrini, Michel Doneda, and Frédéric Blondy, among others. Actually, his musical searches include clarinet, prepared bass, and vibrating loudspeakers for a sonic universe somewhere between improved music, noisy rock, and electro-acoustic explorations. Otomo Yoshihide: After eight years spent as Ground Zero's leader, Otomo Yoshihide is now involved in various projects mixing turntables and guitar, known as DJ Tranquillizer, Filament, or Microcosmos. Following the example of Erik M, Martin Tétreault, or Christian Marclay (and even if he admits their influence) but also Pierre Schaeffer, Derek Bailey, and the very first hip-hop DJs, his use of turntables is so incredible that he can't be considered a proper DJ. Almá Fury: Almá Fury sculpta shifting soundscape of electric and electronic noise, letting fantasy guide them, as they mix varied and tangential sonic materiel. Their setup includes: Moog, voice, guitar, cassettes, samples, drum machine, and percussion; sonic experimentation and playful creativity are all-important. Otani Yasuhiro is a Tokyo-based improviser.
