EASY A Heartbeat From Eternity LP
LP version. After celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of their classic debut album from 1990 Magic Seed (TURN 053CD/LP), Easy present a new album, A Heartbeat From Eternity. The top Swedish exports enjoyed writing songs again, and with producer Charlie Storm, they began recording once more. Two of the songs are throwbacks to the early nineties from when they began: the Manchester groove of "The Reincarnated" and the thundering "Song To Remember". Satisfied with what they had created they pressed some CDs to give away to friends. On a creative roll they decided to write some music to accompany the poems in Johan Holmlund's poetry collection: Swimming With The Beast. Pop songs -- The catchy joy of "I Can Tell You Why", the shimmering Velvets of "Little Boy", and the Chills-esque "A Picture".

ALMA NEGRA Visions 12"
12 Rhythms, as the name already suggests, is a collection series on the label Alma Negra. Vision demonstrates the important atypical grooves of Brazilian culture. Instruments like the berimbau, used in capoeira or the carnival strong batucada beat, are combined with the mysteries of Brazilian experimental music on "Vision". Hypnotic experimental vocals and dub chords combined with a personal interpretation of the batucada rhythm. "Capoeira" demonstrates a classic capoeira groove, created just for the dancefloor. "Berimbau" is a smooth sailing track with variations of berimbau that create a trance-like vibe when combined with harmonic flutes.

CAMARAO The Imaginary Soundtrack to a Brazilian Western Movie 1964-1974 CD
Camarão, living Patrimony of the state of Pernambuco November 2012: "In 1960 we received an invitation to play in Recife, a wonderful, exciting and dangerous place, often described as a 'social jungle'. The Forró party took place at Caxangá´s neighbourhood theatre, on the first floor; with its high ceilings, wooden floors and balconies, the place was perfect for these kinds of events. When all the windows were wide open, there would be a wonderful breeze during the hot tropical evenings. Since everyone was looking for amusement, the place was packed on weekends. People from all corners of society would arrive nicely dressed, animated and chatting loudly over the sound of clinking glasses. Pernambuco´s Cachaça, considered by many, especially by the locals, to be the best in the country, had started flowing generously and the popular sugar cane-based alcohol lives up to its reputation. We always had a few shots to warm up before performing and by the time the place was packed we were already in a very good mood. Our local cachaça had loosened the bodies and minds of everyone in the room, people started to pair off and twirl around to the sound of forró music, smiling and sliding their feet off the floor -- a reflex picked up from dancing in rural villages to avoid kicking up the dust." CD version includes 28-page booklet with liner notes and pictures.

EULBERG, DOMINIK Roter Gitterling & Tintenfischpilz 12"
Dominik Eulberg's second EP on his label Apus Apus. Not allowing any objection, "Roter Gitterling" strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of the fleshy red cage of the mushroom it takes its name from. A fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. "Tintenfischpilz" is a bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom that evokes, at first glance, the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. All done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

CLARIAN Television Days LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. Canadian DJ/Producer Clarian presents his highly anticipated debut album, Television Days via Australia's Balance Music. Ever enigmatic and distinctive, Clarian, a songwriter and sound engineer from Montreal, first gained notable recognition by the music scene via his former work in synth pop duo Footprintz, releasing several highly-acclaimed singles as well as Escape Yourself (2013), an album project that was co-produced with Ewan Pearson. Since the release of the aforementioned long-player, Clarian has continued his sonic development, maintaining his imaginative semblance channeling this into his own signature recording techniques and collaborations. Clarian has also collaborated and engineered on several warmly received releases with Guy Gerber, Tiga, and recently Felix Da Housecat. Television Days, influenced by a Casio found under the bed of an Airbnb, was created in Berlin during a tumultuous period and follows the tragic adventures of Kevin Jones, a down-and-out television scriptwriter living in west Hollywood who's obsessed with Carl Sagan's Cosmos and believes he's being contacted by ancient astronauts. This characteristically ineffable theme is matched by the album's equally passionate and otherworldly style, with the long, drawn-out synths on opener "Dedication to Sagan" and the retro-inducing soundscape on "Lost Again" offering a fitting example of what's to come over the album's ten tracks. Other highlights include the album's first single "Under the Gun", a track bursting with lush lo-fi synths and percussion, fused with the almost breathless, reverbed vocal performance from Clarian that nods in the direction of '80s synth-pop works of Mute Records. There's also the atmospheric and colorful "Tulum", the hazy synth-driven "Down and Out", the dystopian sounding "Mote of Dust", and the album's closer, "Television Days", a track where Clarian's dreamy vocals blend particularly well with the melancholic percolating beats. Television Days may be quirky, but it's also a rare glimpse into the state of mind and emotions of Clarian, who himself describes it as "a surreal self-examination of fears and mentalities after several nocturnal years of touring and producing music free to experiment and explore strange and fantastic worlds." Taking notes from the school of the tragic celebration, Television Days is a standout and unique record that both showcases an array of ambient sound techniques as it pays tribute to its love affair for new wave. In the words of Kevin Jones, "let's get deep, let's get rocked."

AMM AMMMusic LP
2018 repress! First vinyl reissue of the landmark 1967 debut album by AMM, AMMMusic. Remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Exact replica sleeve by Stephen O'Malley. "Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its recording in 1966, this reissue makes one of the cornerstones of the experimental music tradition available again in its original form, replete with Keith Rowe's beautiful pop art cover and the terse aphorisms by the group that served as its original liner notes. A testament to the interaction between the experimental avant-garde and the countercultural underground, the album was originally released on Elektra, recorded by Jac Holzman (the label's founder, responsible for signing The Doors, Love, and The Stooges) and produced by DNA, a group that included Pink Floyd's first manager, Peter Jenner (the title of Pink Floyd's 'Flaming' is a tribute to AMM's 2018 repress forthcoming, available March/2018...'Later During a Flaming Riviera Sunset'). Formed in 1965 by three players from the emerging British jazz avant-garde -- Keith Rowe and Lou Gare had played with the great progressive big band leader Mike Westbrook and Eddie Prévost played in a post-bop group with Gare -- AMM quickly evolved from a free jazz group into something decidedly more difficult to categorise. By the time these recordings were made, two more members had joined the group: another Westbrook associate, Lawrence Sheaff, and the radical composer Cornelius Cardew. Then at work on his masterpiece of graphic notation Treatise, Cardew brought with him extensive experience of the post-serialist and Cageian currents in contemporary composition. Using a combination of conventional instruments and unconventional methods of sound production (most famously Keith Rowe's prepared tabletop guitar, but also prepared piano and transistor radio), the group performed improvised pieces often running for over two hours and ranging from extended periods of silence to terrifying cacophonies. On AMMMusic, long tones sit next to abrasive thuds, the howl of uncontrolled feedback accompanies Cardew's purposeful piano chords, radios beam in snatches of orchestral music. AMM's clearest break with jazz-based improvisation concerned the idea of individuality. Initially through an engagement with eastern philosophy and mysticism and later though a politicized communitarianism, AMM sought to develop a collective sonic identity in which individual contributions could barely be discerned. In the performances captured on AMMMusic the use of numerous auxiliary instruments and devices, including radios played by three members of the group, contribute to the sensation that the music is composed as a single monolithic object with multiple facets, rather than as an interaction between five distinct voices." --Francis Plagne

JC SATAN Centaur Desire LP
LP version. Printed undersleeve. You can count on the fingers of one hand the bands you've loved up until their fifth album like J.C. Satàn -- almost ten years after falling in love. There are dudes who have "seen them too much", heard them too much, and stopped expecting anything from them anymore. The Satàn crew did not deliver a fifth album just for the hell of it, just to justify their next tour: they got together to seek the rare fuel, the miraculous current able to galvanize our sleeping senses, the electroshock forcing us to revive the urgent impression of being alive. Centaur Desire has something of a new first-time record -- recorded all together (Arthur and Dorian used to handle all instruments themselves), enhanced by an incredibly powerful sonority (gear has piled up over the last years), and filled with a new groove (Romain finally plays his drum parts, and it's fantastic). Never where you'd expect it, Paula's voice adds to the pervading climate of freshness. A formula had to be found, that combines an undeniable talent for composition with devastating live fury. Here it is, and some of this on-stage gold stabilized to get cut on record and reproduced endlessly until reaching our speakers. If the modern-era Nicholas Flamel extracting this yellow metal out of peat was called Josh Homme or Black Rebel Something, the whole world would be murmuring the ecstasy of court's flatterers. At a time when the aforementioned bigwigs are composing a supposedly magnum umpteenth opus that smacks a lot of schlock, J.C. Satàn release something that dashes all of them with the cheerfulness of freaks and the Rabelaisian, farcical mirth of a horny centaur inviting us to Pan's great farandole, in the setting of a Manowar sleeve. "Centaur Desire!" declaims a sonorous voice on the title song, just like one would invoke some demon/leviathan to lay low an army of muddy killer whales by hitting them with burning dildos. Like a superlative life, an explosion of springtime sap accompanying the great universal libidinous rush that seizes us in the cosmic shag or in the mosh pit. No doubt the fact that this fifth album is their best one to date is quite uncommon and leads one to wonder.

ESTARDY, BERNARD Bernard Estardy's Space Oddities 1970-1982 LP
LP version. Printed undersleeve. A master of the mixing board from the late '60s until the '90s, Bernard Estardy was the wizard of French musical recordings. As head of CBE studios, he shaped everything from Gérard Manset's concept albums to Claude François's hit singles, Françoise Hardy's delicate tear-jerkers and Michel Sardou's soul-stirrers. This "giant" had his hand in the whole range of mainstream French music by making his studio a veritable playground for experimentation. His legendary album La Formule du Baron, released in 1969, and the eight LPs of production music he made between 1974 and 1978 for Tele Music are vivid proof. Born Bad Records present Bernard Estardy's Space Oddities 1970-1982, a collection of his work.

2012 release. Charly Records present a reissue of the compilation Epitaph For A Legend, originally released in 1980. Formed in Austin, Texas in 1965, the International Artists label is best known for the 13th Floor Elevators' hit singles and seminal albums, but the label also released a series of ground-breaking records from such highly-regarded artists as The Red Crayola, Lost & Found, and The Golden Dawn. The label's success largely came down to the efforts of Lelan Rogers, brother of the country star Kenny. Under Rogers's guidance the label embraced the revolutionary new psychedelic sound that was emerging from Texas. Epitaph For A Legend is a collection of rarities from the label's catalogue which Rogers put together in 1980 for a double vinyl release. This enhanced deluxe reissue of the album features in its gatefold inner extensive new notes from The Mole, of Shindig Magazine. LAVETTE, BETTYE Nearer To You LP
2013 release. Bettye Lavette's appearance at Barack Obama's inauguration concert in January 2009, singing "A Change Is Gonna Come", introduced her to a global audience of millions who had hitherto been totally unaware of her immense talent and interpretive powers. She now appears regularly on US TV and has had guest slots on Jay Leno, Letterman, and on most other significant American late-night chat shows. She is a true American music legend, although the critical acclaim, awards and accolades deservedly showered upon her in recent years were a long time coming. Although Lavette recorded for a variety of labels from the early '60s onwards, many soul fans regard the material she recorded for Silver Fox and SSS International in Memphis in the late '60s and early '70s as some of her finest. Nearer To You is a collection of all the singer's recordings from these two labels and includes two fine duets with Hank Ballard. This is the first time this collection has been available in two decades; Nearer To You was originally released in 1991.

MARLEY & THE WAILERS, BOB 30 Years Ago - The Classical Edition 2CD
2011 release. Marking the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley's death in May 1981, 30 Years Ago collects highlights from Marley's pre-Island Records recordings. Bob Marley had already established himself as the leading voice of reggae music before his signing to Island Records in 1972 and his rise to international super-stardom. This is evident from these 20 gems from his earlier recordings made with The Wailers, which many reggae authorities consider to be his finest and purest work. Very much roots-based, they are in marked contrast to Marley's later ones for Island, where his sound was tailored towards the lucrative rock market. These remarkable recordings from the late '60s and early '70s remain as testament to Marley's genius as both a songwriter and a singer. Comprising in the main of titles from his sessions with famed producer Lee Perry, the set features several titles which Marley was successfully to return to in later years, such as "Trenchtown Rock", "Lively Up Yourself", and "Natural Mystic". The set also contains several sought-after titles and versions as well as his original recording of "Concrete Jungle", a highlight of his Catch A Fire debut album for Island (1973).

HANGING STARS, THE Songs For Somewhere Else LP
LP version. London-based psych-folk-country quintet The Hanging Stars present their second album Songs For Somewhere Else. Taking cues from both sides of the Atlantic, they mainline the dying embers of the early '70s psychedelic folk and cosmic country scenes, transforming them into an energized new sound for modern times. This album follows on from their critically acclaimed 2016 debut Over the Silvery Lake (CRO 003CD), which received praise from The Times, who described it as; "An album with enough of a hazy, sun-dappled charm to make the capital's dreariest weather bearable", as well as Uncut, who proclaimed that it was; "a promising debut from London's The Hanging Stars, who switch deftly between deliciously sentimental Americana and swaggering psychedelia." Their second album is more varied than its predecessor and sees them expanding into new territories whilst continuing to channel an English wistful ethereality grown from American soil. Tracing their inspiration from Dennis Wilson to Gram Parsons and On The Beach-era Neil Young (1974), they equally draw from early gospel soaked Spiritualized, jangle pop, spaghetti western soundtracks, old bossa nova records, and prohibition-era blues. Joining founding members -- songwriter, singer, and guitarist Richard Olson (The See See, Eighteenth Day of May), Sam Ferman on bass, and Paulie Cobra on drums -- were contributions from now permanent members Patrick Ralla (Alan Tyler Show, Edwyn Collins) on guitars, keys and vocals, and Joe Harvey-White (pedal steel, dobro), bringing new perspectives to the band's work. They had a collective attitude to performances on the album, with additional input from US friends Collin Hegna (Federale, Brian Jonestown Massacre), Miranda Lee Richards (on the emotive duet "How I Got This Way"), and Christof Certik (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Winter Flowers), as well as Alison Cotton on viola (Left Outsides, Eighteenth Day Of May), Luke Barlow (Nought) on flute and Thomas Wake on clarinet. Touching on themes of fear of pain, death and failure, the songs strike a rich emotional chord. From the pensive melancholia of album opener "On A Sweet Summer's Day", to the Big Star-tinged lead single "Honeywater" and the gorgeous instrumental "Djupsjön", inspired by the dense southern Swedish pines of Olson's childhood, the album is a varied delight. With this album, The Hanging Stars usher the next phase of their musical development, with Olson's astute lyrical observations and honeyed vocals at the fore, backed by the band's creative musical arrangements. Recorded at Bark Studios with Brian O'Shaughnessey.

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER Gaining Time 12"
Belfast-producer Space Dimension Controller, aka Jack Hamill, lands his debut release on Dekmantel with the three-track EP Gaining Time. Clocking in at over 35-minutes, the EP phases between cosmic kaleidoscopic house, and serene, epic ambient -- Hamill's Dekmantel debut is closer to that of an album, than your average set of club tracks. "Everything Is Better Now" is a techno-futurist journey both progressive and fluid. "NRG Intersect" is a beautiful 15-minute ambient transmission from outer space, played out with synth chords, across strummed melodies, and a tape deck hitch. "(Still) Returning" takes the ambient coding and minimizes it yet further.

MODERN INSTITUTE, THE Another Exhibition at the Modern Institute LP
Diagonal pull out a zinging art-techno curveball with Another Exhibition at the Modern Institute, the second EP by Glasgow's hottest new prospect, The Modern Institute; an iconoclastic trio of agitators comprising Golden Teacher's Richard McMaster and Laurie Pitt joined some droll, scaly Northern English vocalist, James Stephen Wright, for one of the freshest and vital blends of post-punk, art-school, and techno sensibilities to emerge in recent memory. Aimed as a snark at the middle-class art gaze as much as a slippery engine for the dancefloor, Another Exhibition at the Modern Institute reels six mercurial fusions of scudding, techy rhythms, and sheer electronic contours strewn with drily observant vocals describing hyper-sensual scenarios. It's a sound perhaps purposefully located lightyears away from Golden Teacher's charming retro-vintage styles, and effectively gives that group's rhythmic engine of McMaster and Pitt a space to express their more contemporary concerns. Forming the second blow of a Glasgow-centered 1-2 after Russell Haswell and Sue Tompkins's Respondent EP (DIAG 043LP), The Modern Institute swarm in formation from a white-hot electro-stepper "IV Cheeks" to somewhere darker, almost paranoid by the close of "Dozen Cocktails", taking in a sound like Errorsmith producing for MES in "Limitless Light", or Hecker doing footwork on the new beta anthem "Quicksilver Lips", whilst "Unbreakable Pulse" and the pinging ballistics of "Molton Gold" short circuit the deep-rooted transatlantic connection between Glasgow art punks' afterparties and Detroit ghetto styles with a deadly swagger. RIYL: Chris Carter, DJ Stingray, Toresch, Dale Cornish, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, John Bender, Smersh, LCD Soundsystem. Artwork by Guy Featherstone. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Includes locked grooves. Red vinyl; Edition of 500.

Bonus tracks "My Heart Cries," "Spoonful," "It's a Crying Shame," and "If I Can't Have You" are taken from two 1960 singles featuring doo-wop idol Harvey Fuqua of The Moonglows (best known for their 1954 hit "Sincerely"). Originating in a collaboration between Dubkasm and their long-time friend, Norway-dwelling heavyweight bass guitarist, Bajan Steppa, Enter The Gates is a discomix built on a tuff bassline, skittering drums, and retro synths, and features reflective, courageous lyrics about the enduring power of Black liberation movements and consciousness from Gloucester vocalist Rider Shafique. The B side contains an upfront instrumental cut, followed by a collaboration with a musical titan. Mad Professor's incredible dub flips the original into a propulsive soundsystem killer, retaining the tune's heart and spirit, but driving and percussive where the original is deep and soulful.

DADAWAH Peace And Love LP
LP version, 2018 repress. Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974. Led by Jamaican Rastafarian singing hand-drummer Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation drums and bass-heavy (with no rhythm guitar; rather, Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed blues). Lloyd Charmers and Federal Studios engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards. At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia. Previously squandered in an incongruous 2-for-1 reissue, now lovingly returned to its original, singular glory at Abbey Road. Pressed on super-fly vinyl and housed in new standard-printed sleeves.

POTTER NATALIZIA ZEN Shut Your Eyes On The Way Out LP
After stranding listeners in deep space with Schleißen 4 in 2015, Colin Potter, Alessio Natalizia, and Guido Zen regroup along the percussive vectors of Shut Your Eyes On The Way Out for the Ecstatic label. Three years in the making, taking cues from German synth rock, cosmic disco, abstract EBM, and obscure library sounds, the trio head for seductive new horizons of pulsing rhythms and floating ambient dub tones. The six hands control the mission with masterful skill and sleight of hand, prompting routes for the user rather than signposting the way with cliché. Of course, it's hard to escape some sense of homage or reverence for the original forms, but they do so with such sensitivity to the material and "the journey" that the results simply transcends that heritage, to arrive somewhere, timelessly, out there. In a starfield littered with long-abandoned shuttles and criss-crossed by previously attempted missions, they chart a steady course, slowly melting from cryogenic stasis to map out free-floating space in "Articulated", then holding their course despite the gravitational pull from massive objects in "Rhythm Did Not Change", and under pressure of slow disco G-forces in the pulsing beauty of "Linda", leading to the interception of panicked bleeps in "Chaosmosis". Over on the B side "When Time Stops Moving" the mission becomes very Tarkovsky-esque and surreal, with Zen's lysergic drones really coming into their own, before the upside-down tonal sculpting of "Unsystematic Waves" re-aligns the user's brain functions in preparation for the stunning dynamic proprioception of "Che Osmosi", where the route ahead becomes scrambled in a delirious tangle of nagging arpeggio melodies and pill-belly pulses, emulating pretty much how you'd feel, lost but happy to be zillions of light years from terra firma. RIYL: Eduard Artemiev, Klaus Schulze, Vangelis, John Carpenter. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

BASHO, ROBBIE Live in Forli, Italy 1982 LP
LP version. Robbie Basho (1940-86), who died young after a stroke, never got his due in the culture at large, but steel-string guitar enthusiasts have known for decades that he was one of the greats of "American Primitivism". Technically adept and compositionally imaginative, fusing the music of many cultures into a mesmerizing solo style, he has been an inspiration for many; his music has generated a surge of interest in recent years. This 1982 concert was part of a four-show Italian tour. It took place at the 18th-century Palazzo Gaddi that housed the local music high school and was mostly used for classical concerts, in an intimate space co-organizer Mario Calvitti (whose memories of the events surrounding this concert make up the bulk of the liner notes) says Basho called it "one lovely little room where I could play all night." Only previously released incompletely as a download, this show can now be heard in its full glory. This release is in cooperation with the Official Robbie Basho Archives. No. 2 in the RB-Archives-Live series. Produced by Buck Curran; Co-released with Obsolete Recordings."American musician Robbie Basho (1940-1986) is without doubt one of the greatest pioneers of world guitar music. To this day, his songs and compositions for the acoustic guitar remain wholly unique, contemporary, and otherworldy. Though largely unknown in Italy when he toured there in 1982 (in the company of Italian acoustic guitarist Maurizio Angeletti), the small to medium size audiences who attended his performances were overwhelmingly sympathetic to his musical vision and deeply entranced in the glow of his musical presence. From what is documented on this recording from Forlì, we are given witness to Basho's idiosyncratic spirit and musical artistry. Wielding only a six and twelve-string guitar and his powerful voice, we hear rapturous fingerpicking and singing. As the concert evolves, Basho's spirit rises high above terra firma as he transforms into a wild mythical winged stallion, riding waves of colour and sound ... charging across plains of cosmic light towards the outer regions of space and time." --Buck Curran, September 11, 2017, Bergamo, Italy

JOHANNA, JOHN I'll Be Ready When The Great Day Comes LP
John Johanna's eclectic output uses psychedelia and oriental tonalities, primal gospel blues and folk -- among other ingredients -- to create a body of diverse, yet coherent devotional music. A singer and multi-instrumentalist who works on cassette and reel-to-reel tape at his home in rural Norfolk, and with Kristian Craig Robinson (Capitol K) at Total Refreshment Centre in London, his songs are informed by the mystical cosmology of the Eastern Orthodox Church. I'll Be Ready When The Great Day Comes, his debut vinyl release, draws from a range of John Johanna pieces gathering four remastered tracks which previously appeared on a now sold-out limited cassette tape run, and four new tunes. Leaning in part to the acoustic and dark balladeer aspect of his music, whilst drum machine and blues pieces hint to what's to comes in future. "Bound" is the most personal piece; written with a deceased friend in mind it recalls discussions on Greek mythology of Prometheus. "Rock My Soul" is an adaptation of traditional words from blues gospel lineage. "Knowledge And Power, Nathaniel" is a raga. "I'll Be Ready When The Great Day Comes" has a full live band accompaniment. The words of "World Unknown" come from the 1700's hymn writer and theologian, Isaac Watts. A lot of John Johanna's material takes its cue and shares from a rich tradition of mystical spiritualist music words and motifs. Characteristically appearing live accompanied with a four-track tape deck, his incredible voice and simple raw guitar style always recalls a pure mysticism. He's played sets at End Of The Road Festival and multiple supporting slots with label mates Blue House and Super Best Friends Club, amongst others. Artwork illustration by Chris Bianchi (Le Gun, Bare Bones). A3 250gsm poster print, folded over in clear liner. Edition of 200.

HOOKWORMS Pearl Mystic LP
LP version. Repress; Green and white splatter on clear vinyl. Originally released in 2013. For a while now Leeds five-piece Hookworms have been terrorizing headlining bands across northern England and beyond, not through histrionics or gimmick, but through sheer sonic velocity and emotive intent. Often bracketed among the latest wave of psychedelic rock currently appearing in pockets around the UK, this tag is somewhat of a misnomer for a band whose use of repetition and reverb is not to open the third dimension or for some sort of flower-power escapism. Pearl Mystic is an absolutely thunderous statement of intent for Hookworms after a portentous couple of years of live shows and limited releases. The album's themes focus on a deeply personal narrative surrounding a lost relationship and a battle with depression that at its worst brought about, as the group's vocalist MJ puts it "a half-hearted suicide attempt". Thus songs like "Away/Towards" possess a gargantuan build-and-release infectious energy that juxtaposes with a subtext of a bi-polar approach to coping with loss. "Preservation", too, is in keeping with the group's live shows, though deals with existentialism, whilst several Raymond Carver influences are scattered in and among the bold textures of sound. "In Our Time" is perhaps the closest thing to escapism on the album, about a hill MJ would cycle up near Otley in Yorkshire after the end of his relationship, because it possessed his favorite view in the world. "Since We Had Changed" meanwhile is almost mantra-like in its constancy, new percussive elements joining those already on the record, whilst "What We Talk About" returns full circle to the first track's themes of depression, and emerges from mixed field recordings including a backwards taping of a Hare Krishna lecture played down the studio corridor. Certainly the production is lush, erring on the lo-fi side but contrasting that with a sense that every element has been pored over and deeply considered. Indeed, the most impressive thing about Hookworms is that, through this torrent of emotion, through their wild motorik and their thick slabs of noise that threaten to spill over, there's always the sense that they're in control of it all, so committed are they to this catharsis that they refuse to throw any of it to chance. Recorded and produced in MJ's own Suburban Studios.

TA-RA SunrayZ LP
French artist Ta-Ra has built up quite a following since arriving on the scene with her hit track "Lil Bit". Now clocking up over 1 million views on YouTube, the track set her apart from the crowd and laid the foundation for her self-released TuaregShawty EP in 2014. After a string of shows across Europe and the Far East, Ta-Ra is ready to drop her first vinyl in the form of mini-LP SunrayZ. Collaborating with fellow French producers like NxxxxxS and Myth Syzer, among others, she delivers eight tracks of dreamscape R&B for the heads. Whether it's the Blade Runner-esque "Kawaskai Ninja" evoking luminous, noir-like imagery or the hazy, chill-wave transitions of "Death Ray", Ta-Ra constantly reminds you why so many are hooked on her ethereal sound.

NEBULA To The Center CD
Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Nebula's To The Center, originally released in 1999. Nebula's first non-EP, full-length release, To The Center is another retro-psychedelic heavy rock platter, long on stripped-down riff muscle and surprisingly technically adept guitar jams. The results sometimes meander, which probably isn't of much consequence if this brand of metal is your bag, since this is what you'd expect in this perception-expanding context. What matters more than tightly structured songs are riffs and atmosphere, and both of those are in abundance here. To The Center was released in 1999 on Sub Pop. The album has much more of a progressive/psychedelic sound to it than most of the band's other albums. Produced by Jack Endino and Nebula.; Engineered by Jack Endino and recorded at Hanzsek Audio, Seattle, April 1999. Includes unlisted bonus tracks.

BAILEY, DEREK Lot 74 LP
Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey's Lot 74, originally released by Incus in 1974. Recorded at a private house in West London, the side-long title track is a masterwork: a twenty-two-minute, starkly personal, freely expressive, itchily searching re-casting of orders of rhythm and sound into a new, quicksilver kind of affective and musical polyphony. Never mind the guitarist's championing of "non-idiomatic improvisation", the poet Peter Riley gets the ball rolling in his identification of the various hauntings of Bailey's playing at this time: "mandolins & balalaikas strumming in the distance, George Forby's banjo, Leadbelly's steel 12-string, koto, lute, classical guitar... and others quite outside the field of the plucked string." The five pieces on side two were recorded back home in Hackney around the same time -- with the exception of "Improvisation 104(b)", from the year before (and issued by Incus in its TAPS series of mini reel-to-reel tapes) -- opening with ventriloquized guitar feedback, and taking in some cod banter about colleagues like Mervyn Parker, Siegfried Brotzmann, and Harry Bentink. Crucial.

BAILEY/TRISTAN HONSINGER, DEREK Duo LP
Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey and Tristan Honsinger Duo, originally released by Incus in 1976. Born in Burlington, Vermont, and conservatory-trained in the US, the cellist Tristan Honsinger moved from Montreal to Amsterdam in 1974, quickly linking with Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg and opening a long and fruitful musical relationship with Derek Bailey. Recorded in 1976, Duo displays a performative musical approach already characterized by the lack of inhibition which would later endear him to The Pop Group: he is knockabout, exclamatory, explosively rhythmic; burping Bach and folk melodies with spasmodic lyricism, in amongst the garrulous textures and accents of his scraping, bowing, and plucking, and gibbering like a monkey; throwing out his arms and stamping the floor, grappling with his instrument like an expert clown, always tripping himself up. You can hear Bailey reveling in the company, as he ranges between scrabbling solidarity and an askance skewering of his partner's antics, on prepared (nineteen-string) and standard electric guitars -- and a Waisvisz Crackle-box, for the garbled, quizzical, cross-species natter which closes "The Shadow". Throughout, the spirited interplay between laconic, analytic wit, and guttural, sometimes slapstick physicality is consistently droll, often laugh-out-loud funny; vigorously alert, alive, and gripping.

Dancehall was when the beat slowed down to that classic one-drop style that suited his voice so well. The album includes the title "Boxing" which was a massive hit for Cornell on its initial release in 1982. It also includes a dancehall reworking of "Queen Of The Minstrel" and a fantastic dancehall cut to Bob Marley's "Natty Dread". This was a new chapter in reggae's sound that saw the rhythm slowed down and seemed to add even more emphasis to the songs meanings. A reissue of Cornell's early '80s Boxing set is complete here. GUSGUS Arabian Horse 2LP
2018 repress; gatefold 2LP version. Includes download code. Iceland's GusGus graces Kompakt with a second album, after their enigmatic debut for the label 24/7, which earned the trio much acclaim thanks to its conceptual rigidity and pure glamour. Conceived solely with the help of two precious Doepfer modular systems and Daniel August's all-pervasive vocals, it could easily have been characterized as GusGus' unofficial live album. For Arabian Horse, their seventh studio album, President Bongo, Biggi Veira and Daniel August set up a makeshift studio in a summer cottage in the depths of the lava field. Secluded in silence and beauty, they produced something that really showcases GusGus' versatility and stunning songwriting ability. A vast array of illustrious guest musicians and singers abound on these powerful new songs. Most prominently, this album features the long-awaited return of former band member and gifted vocalist Urður "Earth" Hákonardóttir, who appears on three songs. Högni Elisson of the band Hjaltalin lends his voice to some of the album's most memorable and deepest moments. Samúel Jón Samúelsson contributes the elevating, goosebump-inducing string arrangements and David Thor Jonsson contributes accordion and the banjo. Even an un-named gypsy combo leaves their mark here. Compared to GusGus' stripped-down predecessor for Kompakt, this album is much more in-your-face -- the songs brim with big gestures, enthralling hooks, pop and soul. Take the powerful schaffel anthem "Deep Inside," which makes use of big room chords, a ferocious bass line and a vocal duel, or "Within You," where strings converge with breathtaking vocals and an addictive techno bass kick. GusGus retrace their original influences, creating an album that recalls a forgotten period of early '90s dance pop (think The Beloved), classic house music and urban soul à la Massive Attack. But make no mistake, Arabian Horse does not sound like pure retro in any way. It's deeply rooted in the sound of today, backed by one of the most state-of-the-art quality productions Kompakt has released to date. Still need a tag? Why not: Icelandic hi-tech soul.

DURANTE, MAX The Experiment 2x12"
Max Durante's first LP in a 30-year career, The Experiment, is a new, left-field direction for an artist whose history traces from the birth of techno, through IDM, industrial, and electro. Spread over four sides of vinyl, The Experiment consists of beatless pieces (which reveal another character when slowed to 33RPM), broken-beat techno, and straight-up dancefloor trips. The LP opens with eight minutes of full immersion in the eternally looped beat of "EX-P01". It clears the palette for the diverse yet distinctive, ambient-leaning tracks which make up the first 12". On the C side, Durante's focus is on the dancefloor, with hard-hitting, tense techno tracks made in collaboration with his peers from the early Roman scene, acclaimed duo Retina.it and Fabrizio D'Arcangelo, half of Rephlex act D'Arcangelo. On the final side, "EX-P07" is trademark Durante in the style of Black Light (KYN 001EP, 2015) or his recent records for Sonic Groove, before an ambient outro ends the experiment. The record was mastered by one of Rome's following generation of techno artists, Giuseppe Tillieci aka Neel. 140 gram vinyl.

"Benjamin Kilchhofer is not new to the world of recorded music, yet he doesn't seem to fit into a particular scene or group. Kilchhofer avoids the spotlight; isn't really visible in today's culture of ever changing content and social media. This is where Marionette steps in, to attempt to shed as much light as possible on this unique artist. The Book Room is Kilchhofer's musical diary. His library of emotions. It is an imaginary place shaped by exotic cultures, an escape from modern society, a collage of real and imagined experiences. Influences abstracted from a wide number of musical approaches: the story-telling nature of folklore music, conflicting rhythms of tribal drums, melodies and pads reminiscent of classical minimalism and microtonal experimental music, the freeform approach of early electronic music and krautrock, and, buried deep within the tracks, some hints of dance and club music.""Drawing principally from minimalism, ambient, and krautrock, Swiss producer Benjamin Kilchhofer's latest is a deeply immersive timbral and tactile experience." --Philip Sherburne, Pitchfork

MCNAIR WITH ORNETTE COLEMAN'S SIDEMEN, HAROLD Affectionate Fink CD
Monkey Dog present a reissue of Affectionate Fink from Harold McNair With Ornette Coleman's Sidemen, originally released in 1965. An incredible record from reedman Harold McNair -- one of the key Jamaican jazz players who hit the London scene in the same post-colonial wave as Joe Harriott and Shake Keane -- and a standout of the bunch. Harold's a hell of a talent on both tenor and flute. Although he might be best known for his background work on late '60s Donovan albums, he really soars here as a soloist, working with Ornette Coleman's group which includes members David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums, both of whom swing wonderfully in McNair's company. The album bills Izenzon and Moffett strongly on the cover -- as if they're one of the main attractions -- but what's most compelling is the way that McNair and pianist Alan Branscombe bring the American musicians into their own sort of groove -- a modal, soulful style that's completely sublime -- and which makes the album a killer all the way through. Titles include the original "Affectionate Fink", plus great takes on "I Love You", "O Barquinho", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", and "Here's That Rainy Day" -- all soulful swingers.

Oliver Deutschmann's hard-edged beats, insistent tones, and occasional flash of devious humor make him a natural addition to the Mote Evolver roster. Deutschmann's deft usage of split-second samples on the opening track "Seduced" -- a distant, repeated murmur and a dense acid bassline. The interlude "Apsurt" follows with lofty, faintly ominous synth pads. "Survive", like "Seduced", relies on the repetition of a single reverberating word to set the tone, while the hammering drum patterns fill in the details. "Lost" dispenses with vocalizations completely and lets the steaming mechanical processes take center stage.

ITABASHI, FUMIO Nature LP
Mule Musiq present the first vinyl reissue of Fumio Itabashi's Nature, originally released in 1979. The legendary Japanese jazz pianist's first solo record ever, Nature was recorded at Nippon Columbia's first studio in Tokyo from March 13-15 in the year of its release. It features Itabashi making feverish love with the piano and he shares the studio with the great bass players Hideaki Mochizuki and Koichi Yamazaki, drummers Kenichi Kameyama and Ryojiro Furusawa, soprano saxophonist Yoshio Otomo, and vibraphone wizard Hiroshi Hatsuyama. They all joined him to perform his very own songs, composed by Itabashi himself and produced by Ryonosuke Honmura, who also produced Japanese jazz heroes, like saxophonist Keizo Inoue, during his career. Nature is fresh, propulsive, twitchy, and melodious from the first to the last tone. Sometimes the instrumentalists play a classic solo in an overall deep modal jazz atmosphere that seems to be made for cats that love the good old stars and inventors -- from John Coltrane to Miles Davis, from Thelonious Monk to Art Blakey. Nature also shows how deep Itabashi studied the history of the genre, while keeping his very own vision of jazz alive. The man that made his professional debut as a member of the Sadao Watanabe Quintet in 1971 and who was also a member of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine world tour from 1985-1987, plays the piano in all tempos, from a nervous high-flying quickness to a deep blues-style slow. Besides the traditional jazz flavors, you get a feeling of mind-expanding spiritual jazz, that grand masters like Pharaoh Sanders or Gary Bartz, turned into a sacred music genre. A master-class record in ravishing big city jazz music, adventurous, sometimes meditative, sometimes faster than the speed of light, always grooving with a bright, pure-toned sensibility and deeply soulful melodic imaginations. It extends the jazz history with a fine balance between tradition and innovation. And it stays infectious all the time while sounding surprisingly fresh due to a lot of thrilling musical spontaneity that touches profoundly even though all notes have been written down by Itabashi before he and his combatants entered the studio. And maybe that's the mystery of these timeless five at times epic recordings: all notes written on paper, but each musician had the freedom to dance with them in his very own unique way.

EL SHAZLY, NADAH Ahwar LP
Nawa Recordings present Ahwar, the debut album by Nadah El Shazly. Starting out singing Misfits covers in a local punk band, then moving on to producing her own electronic tracks and making a name for herself in Cairo's underground scene, Nadah El Shazly's backstory is not that unusual. Her debut album on the other hand, is an entirely unexpected story. Two years in the making, Ahwar (Arabic for "marshlands") is an otherworldly record, not unlike an abstract mythological story-tale. Opening with the mangled and filtered vocals of "Afqid Adh-Dhakira (I Lose Memory)", like an alien dream, the drones of a bowed double bass lead the listener into a drum groove that lays the groundwork for El Shazly's sultry and captivating presence. The Arabic prose lingers over interjections of slap-back delayed guitar twangs and an avant-garde arrangement of dissonant winds, horns, and seemingly random drum fills, ending with an eerie soundscape that wouldn't feel out of place in a giallo classic. Composed, written, and produced by El Shazly herself in collaboration with The Dwarfs Of East Agouza's Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi on co-composition and arrangement duties, the album was crafted across two continents, between Canada and Egypt, and features the crème of Montreal's contemporary-classical and improvised music scene, most of whom are members of Shalabi's own Land Of Kush ensemble. In between El Shazly's five original tracks, the listener is treated to an abstract conversion of Sayyid Darwish's classic "Ana 'Ishiqt (I Once Loved)". El Shazly's haunting vocal floats over broken kalimba and harp arpeggios which slowly intertwine with a free, bowed double bass improv to nestle within the breaks between Younes Al-Qadhi's early 20th century verses of love and betrayal. More than that, it is difficult to really describe, but imagine the worlds of Nico, Björk, and Annette Peacock with the Arabic language as their mother tongue, re-approached through acoustic avant-jazz harmony and re-constructed with a dash of Kamilya Jubran's modern styling of Arabic maqam and you may be somewhere close. Recorded and delicately mixed through miles of analog cabling by Thierry Amar and mastered by Harris Newman, the album is adorned with the surrealist artwork of Egyptian artist Marwan El-Gamal and designed with custom typography by Egyptian designer Valerie Arif. Includes booklet featuring the lyrics in Arabic and English.

Berghain resident Somewhen debuts on Ostgut Ton with four-track EP, AFL, offering his own take on distorted techno, combining squelchy, ultra-saturated drums with chromatic basslines, and EBM inflections. "Ryte" thrusts forward at 133 BPM with a sinister Gabi Delgado-like chant, whipping snares and metallic hats. On "Undress" things slow down significantly, while menacing vocals and melodic synths guide the listener through a hypnotic sonic tunnel. "AFL" emerges into rave territory, with modulating synth figures and bass drones made for the floor. On "Kilo" Somewhen reintroduces sinister, staccato vocals, minimalistic melody, and ominous pads. AFL is equal portions thrash and groove.

BURNIS Light My Fire LP
PMG present a reissue of Burnis's Light My Fire, originally released in 1983. "Search the name 'Burnis Moleme' and the returns are sparse. You'll discover that his track 'Where Is The Answer' appeared on Soundway's excellent Nigerian disco compilation, Doin' It In Lagos. And there are a few entries about this PMG reissue of Light My Fire. But other than that, he seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. He's not even a minister of religion, the career path most Nigerian stars from the '80s chose to follow. Thankfully, we still have Light My Fire. Produced by former Funkee Jake Sollo and backed by a hot team of session musos including Friday Pozo, Nkono Teles and Joseph 'Jojo' Kuo, Burnis delivered a slab of slick Afro disco boogie for the ages. 'Boju Boju' and 'Where Is The Answer' would start a party on any dance floor, while the title track would keep you on it until dawn. Burnis had a sensitive side too, showcased on tracks like 'Scott Angel' and 'No Place To Hide'. I suspect Burnis Moleme was simply a casualty of the Nigerian label wars between EMI, Phondisk and Tabansi in the early '80s. Tabansi hoped that Burnis might be the next Kris Okotie, but Felix Liberty took that mantle instead. But that does take away from what Light My Fire is -- a beautifully produced slice of Nigerian disco boogie by a guy who could write catchy songs, sing like a sex god and look good in a shiny purple suit." --Peter Moore

APOSTLES, THE Banko Woman LP
PMG present a reissue of The Apostles' Banko Woman, originally released in 1977. "Heaven sent from Nigeria's tumultuous east, The Apostles have been preaching a particular blend of funky psychedelic soul/rock fusion for over forty years. On Banko Woman they threw a little Afrobeat into the mix, creating an Afro-funk disco bomb that has been energizing dance floors ever since. The title track finds the band at the height of their powers. Stung by the acclaim Felix 'Feladay' Odey got for the searing guitar lead on 'Never Too Late', Walton Arungwa is a man possessed, trading licks with keyboardist Benjamin Nnamdi Davidson and sounding all the world like a Nigerian Carlos Santana. The players in the rhythm section, Henry Asu Tandu, Chicago Nwoha and Harrison Mba, are tight and relentless, keeping their heads so everyone else can lose theirs. Of course, you don't stay successful as long as The Apostles without giving the audience what they want. On Banko Woman, that's a country song for mum and dad ('Mr Too Know') and a couple of earnest, plaintive tracks for emotional challenged chaps to dedicate to their girlfriends ('Yours Sincerely' and 'Friend Today, Enemy Tomorrow'). You also finish on a high. 'Disciple Funk' is almost a religious experience, an eight-minute long instrumental wig that will have you flipping the record back to side one and starting all over again." --Peter Moore

MOKS, JOE Boys And Girls LP
PMG present a reissue of Joe Moks's Boys And Girls, originally released in 1979. "Calling all students of late '70s Nigerian boogie. Class is in and you're about to get schooled by music professor Josephine Mokwunyei, aka Joe Moks. Spotted by legendary producer, Odion Iruoje, and nurtured by his protege, Alex Tony Okoroji, Joe Moks pioneered a wonky, hi-tech style of funk that would become the sound of '80s Nigeria. Her album Boys And Girls is brash, bouncy and fun, decorated by scatty synth lines and propelled by the 'magic hand claps' of Nigerian rhythm legends Steve Black, Goddy Igidigi and Ifi Okwechime. The title track and 'You Look Without Seeing' are spaced-out party starters. 'Closer Than Skin' boasts a super slinky bass line and 'Love Is Gonna Pay' is a slice of Boney M Euro pop. And, just beneath the froth, strong intelligent lyrics demanding respect and equality. 'Being In Love Is Being Involved' was the blueprint of new kind of relationship Nigerian women were looking for. Joe Moks only made one album. She made a few appearances on Victor Uwaifo's TV show before becoming a professor of Music and Theatre Arts at the University of Benin. But forty years on, Boys And Girls remains a lesson in fun and intelligent Nigerian boogie." --Peter Moore

VANESSA AMARA Manos LP
Cut from the same cloth as 2017's double-cassette, Like All Mornings, Vanessa Amara's new album, Manos, trails shorthand piano pieces and wilted strings through magnificent, electro-acoustic sounds, often settling into buzzing, syncopated reveries. Their new album feels hesitant to reveal its parts and is perhaps a document of the limits of what can be revealed, a memorial to its own process as it winds itself in and around its delicately hued landscape. Though beginning with a morose gait, the album quickly turns over. And revealing its softer self, the clarity of the moving string arrangements hang in the air like fine mist. Everything settles against surfaces as the day breaks, opening up the space, though eventually condensing into the unnerving crescendo of the album's final piece. A recurrent, gentle whirring, much like a gramophone's needle, tracks through much of Manos. It carefully steadies the listener into a mode of measuring duration, a meditative self-awareness that deliver's Vanessa Amara's world. Always intricate, and effortlessly tender, Manos is an album as textural as it is melodic, and it is certainly the most exquisite suite of works to have been presented by Vanessa Amara thus far. Vanessa Amara is Birk Gjerlufsen Nielsen and Victor Kjellerup Juhl.

ORCHESTRA OF CONSTANT DISTRESS Distress Test LP
In the field of music or any contemporary cultural terrain, concepts like development dynamics and progression are used as aesthetic judgement. To any musician or composer, the idea of musical build up comes with a crisis, any attempt towards formal pleasure calls for suspicion that this desire is never one's own. In the case of Orchestra Of Constant Distress, this deadlock manifests itself in an impulse of refusal directed against any evolution and the result is the extreme generic and the absolute distress of normative noise and improvisation. Members with such experiences from The Skull Defekts, Union Carbide Productions, Brainbombs, and No Balls are joined in assemblage of catatonic sounds, obstinate riffs, and rigid rhythms. Orchestra Of Constant Distress is: Joachim Nordwall (The Skull Defekts, iDEAL Recordings), Anders Bryngelsson (Brainbombs, No Balls), Henrik Rylander (The Skull Defekts, Union Carbide Productions), and Henrik Andersson. DJ YOGO R12: Contemporary Sounds of Tel Aviv 2LP
Rothschild 12 operated between 2009 and 2017 in the heart of Tel-Aviv, near the bustling intersection of Herzl Street and Rothschild Boulevard. Located on the ground floor of an elegant eclectic-style building which was built by Abraham Fogel exactly 100 years before it opened, Rothschild 12 began as an art gallery and quickly became a popular relaxed café and bar. While its front terrace faced the hustle-and-bustle of the city's main boulevard, in its back room, Rothschild 12 hosted nightly live shows by a variety of established as well as up and coming independent musicians. What started off as improvised jam sessions soon developed into a full program ranging from jazz and rock to world music, hip-hop and electronica. Now that Rothschild 12 is relocating to a new venue on Herzl Street, it is time for a summary -- a snapshot of the musical diversity which filled its walls -- in the form of the compilation you are now holding. This musical summary of Rothschild 12 brings together a modern remix to a pioneering Israeli-Yemenite disco number from the seventies, a bundle of colorful and psychedelic beats, a gentle and well-polished pop tune, a song so frank it hurts that develops into a percussive devil's dance, and three tracks touched by poetry: a modern-electronic rendition to the groundbreaking work of an iconic Tel-Aviv poet; a spoken word piece based on lyrics by a renowned contemporary poet; and an electronic remix to a musician which has become one of the distinguished voices of Tel-Aviv's current younger generation. These gems were selected and combined together by Yotam Goldman, better known around town as DJ Yogo. Born and raised in Tel-Aviv, Yogo spent his childhood replacing school hours with the music shops of Shenkin Street, and from the tender age of 13 began absorbing the sounds of its nightclubs, working as busboy, hanging posters and handing out flyers. For the past 15 years he has been among the city's busiest DJs, and in this compilation, he demonstrates the variety of genres and generations which make the soundtrack of the city so colorful and unique. Features DJ Caress, Shimon Adaf & Herzel Shviro, Rabo & Snob, Jerome C, Einat, Roy Harmon, Ahmed Silan, Assaf Amdursky, Ryskinder, The Models, Mo Rayon, Zohar Wagner, Alek Lee, and Ori & Yehezkel.

TARKOVSKY/EDWARD ARTEMIEV, ANDREY Solaris. Sound And Vision LP BOX
Song Cycle Records present the release of Solaris. Sound And Vision, a collector's edition box set, that includes the soundtrack realized by the great Russian composer Edward Artemiev for Andrey Tarkovsky's masterpiece film Solaris (1972). The box includes the soundtrack in two formats: 180 gram, high-quality virgin vinyl and, for the first time, CD. The release is also accompanied by an exclusive, hardcover photo book with unreleased images of the movie set and essays about music and cinema of the duo Artemiev/Tarkovsky, and the BluRay version of the film, in original language with English subtitles; BluRay region free. The set comes in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies. The collaboration between Tarkovsky and Artemiev started in conjunction with the completion of Solaris when the director was seeking for a film score capable to give back and complete, through the sound, the meaningful images of the film. Back in the day, Artemiev was a member of the legendary Experimental Studio of Electronic Music in Moscow, a place of high experimentation in the field of the electronic music, in the context of which the ANS synthesizer was conceived and employed for the first time for music composition. Invented almost ten years before by Murzin, the ANS was used by Artemiev to create the special sound atmosphere that Tarkovsky was looking for. Artemiev and Tarkovsky's association will also extend to two other undisputed masterpieces of Tarkovsky, Mirror (1975) and Stalker (1979), both forthcoming. A unique artistic joint-venture is that among the duo, in which the musician is seen as a sound organizer, more than a composer, within the process of giving form to a soundscape intertwined completely with the film in its unfolding: always essential and never to be experienced as an accessory element. What emerges here is how and at what degree for Tarkovsky the sound is part of his own existence. Made in collaboration with the Andrey Tarkovsky Institute, Solaris. Sound And Vision is a compelling publication for everyone who wants to dive deep into the Tarkovsky's realm.

VA Highlife On The Move - Selected Nigerian & Ghanaian Recordings From London & Lagos - 1954-66 2CD
2015 release. 38-track compilation from the acclaimed label Soundway. In conjunction with compiler and highlife researcher Dr. Markus Coester, Soundway present a very special release. In many ways this compilation is a prequel of sorts to Soundway's groundbreaking Nigeria & Ghana Special compilations, telling the early story of modern highlife's foundation and formulation. NEON Neon In The Box 4LP BOX
Neon is undoubtedly one of the most influential and enduring bands of the Italian new wave. From the beginning, the band's music was perfectly aligned with continental trends -- integrating the attitude of early post-punk with certain types of electronic music that had timidly begun popping up on the club circuit, and an aesthetic that was a cross between late romanticism and decadentism. Inimitable bands like Neon breathed new life into even the most disagreeable and angular rock n' roll, flirting with war-like dance music, and creating musical scenarios that were unheard of up until that point, placing them in harmony with some of the most talked-about British and German bands of the time, in fact anticipating the advent of EBM. This four-piece vinyl boxed-set contains the following releases: My Blues Is You (1983), Dark Age (1984), Rituals (1985), and Red Light (1986). These are the finest examples of work from one of the '80s Italian scene's finest groups.

GLENN-COPELAND, BEVERLY Beverly Glenn-Copeland LP
Super-Sonic Jazz present a reissue of Beverly Glenn-Copeland's self-titled debut album, originally released on the Canadian GRT imprint in 1970. The debut release by Afro-Canadian singer, songwriter, and cult figure within new age experimental sounds, has been long been sought after. The soulful jazz release, was original recorded in 1970 alongside musicians Dough Bush, Don Thompson, Terry Clark, Lenny Breau, Jeremy Steig, and Ray Charles collaborator Doug Riley, aka Dr. Music. Written when she was 26, the album is a testament to Copeland's stand-out songwriting and earnest, beautiful vocal talents, fitting into the realms of spiritual folk. Born into a musical family in Ottawa, Canada, Beverly Glenn-Copeland studied the classical piano repertoire, after being brought up listening to his father's playing at home. Following his studies, Copeland moved on to songwriting, in order to weave all the different musical cultures he had come to love. He is best known for the 1986 release Keyboard Fantasies, reissued in 2017 by Invisible City, a record described as a mixture of "digital new age and early experimental Detroit techno". Now going by his name Glenn Copeland after gender transitioning, the singer songwriter also made a name for himself writing children's music for TV shows Sesame Street and Mr. Dressup. Referring back to his debut record, Copeland states: "I was a fresh-faced kid of twenty-six when I wrote these songs, only a few years out of the classical music world in which I had been immersed since childhood, performing the European classical song repertoire in concerts both live and for radio broadcast. So I sold my oboe, bought a guitar, and began tuning it in wild and wonderful ways to more easily find the chords I had no idea how to find in the regular tuning. I didn't want to study anymore. I just wanted to write." Comes in a heavyweight tip-on sleeve.

UP HIGH COLLECTIVE Solitude LP
Somewhere between future soul and electronica, you'll find the eclectic, sophisticated, and thoughtfully constructed sounds of audio-visual live bass collective, Up High Collective. The loosely-knit group of Leuven-based musicians and visual artists, all share the same passion for their craft, along with the feel of authenticity and the sound of imperfection. Solitude, released on Tangram Records, combines instrumental hip-hop and forward-thinking electronica. Razor-sharp pieces of future soul, boppin' from the deceptively light and skippy to whirlpool synth lines and hydraulic sub pressure, all trademarked by a signature lick of R&B gloss and sunken subs with ultra-sparse rhythm architecture. With origins in hip-hop and electronic bass music, Up High Collective made a name for themselves with the 7", Blend, released in 2010. The track found its way on to a compilation put together by tastemaker Lefto for Brownswood and in the years that followed, Up High Collective released numerous EPs and founded their own record label, Tangram Records. Their first release on the label, the What?! EP (2012), was followed by an extensive live tour and over the years they have played at parties put on by music broadcasting platforms like Boiler Room and 22tracks in cities like Vienna, Amsterdam and Brussels. This has seen them gain support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Kutmah, Anthony Valadez, Alexander Nut, San Soda, and The Gaslamp Killer. Tangram Records is an independent Belgian-based record label, founded in December 2012. It is curated by Up High Collective and Mophito (Joris Vaes). BOLANDER, KRISTOFFER What Never Was Will Always Be LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. "I dream of cities -- endless cities where I will die alone..."Welcome to the soundtrack for the next Ice Age, home to the last survivors of the global climate catastrophe. The night is pierced by a single voice, ringing as clear as crystal between Kiruna and Trelleborg. It belongs to the Swedish singer-songwriter Kristoffer Bolander, whose second solo album is being released by the Hamburg-based label Tapete. What Never Was Will Always Be offers compelling evidence of his accession to the European elite of alternative songwriters. Moving beyond the typical spectrum of alternative folk as heard on Bolander's 2015 debut I Forgive Nothing (TR 325CD/LP), the sophomore album represents a significant evolution in sound. The wonderfully delicate, high-pitched voice of the Swedish singer is framed beautifully by his excellent band, at times quietly focused, at others ramping up distorted guitars and visceral drums. But what really makes the atmosphere of What Never Was Will Always Be unique is the introduction of electronic elements. From gentle synth pads, reminiscent of Brian Eno soundscapes, to dry, pulsating electro drums, with flashes of arpeggios. The songs range from the epic über-hit "Cities" to danceable synth pop numbers like "Animals" and classic folk tunes such as "True Romance" which features Kristoffer Bolander's voice accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. The album is a panoply of small worlds, every song occupying its own sonic dimension, produced to perfection. Add in Bolander's unique lyrical qualities and an extraordinary mood develops, his words falling like mantras from the future, with tales of lost cities and life-changing romances. The new components gently shift the music away from the tried and trusted folk album biotope into a forward-looking electro folk pop sphere. Kristoffer Bolander took care of all the arrangements by himself and Daniel Johansson, renowned for his work with the likes of Grammy winner Tommy Black, was on production duties. Together, the pair created a distinctive sound for each individual song. Bolander and Johansson's meticulous attention to detail shines through the array of instrumentation so masterfully deployed on the record, perfectly complemented by Bolander's expressive voice. What Never Was Will Always Be is a fresh, contemporary folk pop album, tempting the listener to dance, to dream, to cry. RIYL: Cigarettes After Sex, Brandon Flowers.

ROBERTSON, JOANNE The Lighter CD
2008 release. "It's hard to describe exactly how Joanne's songs function. In certain ways they bear a similarity to folk music. Empirically, they fulfill most of that genre's requirements, but they actually hew to none of its conventions. The lyrics, the structures, the rhythms all breathe with a unique quality that feels born of a free improvisational impulse rarely associated with folk music. The surface of this music is so casual it almost defies you to get close enough to really see it, really try to comprehend it. But the closer you listen, the weirder and deeper everything becomes. Transparent and opaque at the same moment, The Lighter represents a brilliant set of songs, made even more luminous by David Cunningham's production touch. Dig it." --Byron Coley, 2007

TRANSLLUSION The Opening of the Cerebral Gate 3LP
2018 repress; 3LP version. In between the re-releases of the two legendary Drexciya albums released on Tresor in '99 and '01, the Berlin techno institute is proud to re-present Transllusion's The Opening of the Cerebral Gate. For the ?rst time, music fans will be able to experience the whole journey on vinyl. The 3LP package includes the vinyl version of the album as it was originally released plus a bonus 12" featuring "Look Within," "Unordinary Realities," and "Do You Want to Get Down (Vocal De Void)" -- for the ?rst time available on wax. Produced by the late James Marcel Stinson and released in 2001 via Supremat, a short-lived sub-label Tresor dedicated to a more abstract and experimental electro sound, The Opening of the Cerebral Gate was conceived as the second part of the so-called Drexciyan Storms -- a whopping stack of seven albums by the Detroit pair released under different monikers within a single year (the Tresor album Harnessed the Storm being the ?rst). This phase marks a groundbreaking time for the duo, their cosmos breaking wide open, right at the dawn of a new technological era in electronic music production. All this is deeply re?ected in Transllusion's ?rst album. Thematically, The Opening of the Cerebral Gate saw Stinson shift away from the grand narrative of the Drexciyan saga, instead exploring a sub-plot of esoteric concepts revolving around internal, mental and psychedelic tropes. Musically, it presents the electro genius at the height of his game. The album is chock full of hypercharged arpeggios and driving pulse patterns, Morse-like tones and chord stabs, huge, uber-booming tympanic kicks and grainy snares, (see openers "Transmission of Life" and "War of the Clones"). On the other end of the stylistic spectrum it features sweeter tones and moments of sheer, staggering beauty ("Dimensional Glide" or the CD's centerpieces "Look Within" and "Unordinary Realities"). In between, all kinds of alien electro funk shadings are to be found, every single track so well-executed, making it impossible to pick a highlight.

SANDERS, DIJF Java LP
Belgian musician Dijf Sanders pens and produces soundtracks for distant, far-flung places that brood with exotica, psychedelia, jazz, and electronica. His new album Java is a psychedelic and modern search for the sounds of the homonymous Indonesian island. Armed with a set of field recorders, Dijf traveled to every urban and rural corner of Indonesia in the spring of 2017. As a contemporary incarnation of ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, he collected an impressive repertory of recordings, commissioned by the Europalia Arts Festival and KAAP Creative Compass. "Kacapi", "Kendang", "Angklung", "Calung", or "Gamelan" are not the names of indigenous tropical diseases by the way, but those of local instruments that Dijf encountered on his adventurous musical quest. For two weeks the American expert ethnographer Palmer Keen stood by Dijf through his total immersion into the island's colorful culture and rich, ceremonial traditions. On his return to Belgium, Dijf headed straight back into the studio with the gathered material and invited some of his musical soulmates to put the icing on the cake. It is no coincidence that the three guests -- Nathan Daems, Filip Vandebril, and Simon Segers -- are all part of Black Flower, a band that famously flirts with oriental sounds. From hours and hours of field recordings, Dijf distilled ten psychedelic pieces which ride on waves of ecstasy and trance, and bridge the gap between two worlds. Tribal rhythms and warm melodies are fused to a seamless and beautiful musical work in utopia. The Brugge-born, Gentbrugge-based musician is one of those great Flemish talents. In the past, he earned his stripes with Teddiedrum and The Violent Husbands and has produced bands like Kenji Minogue and Blackie & The Oohoos. He has also released music under his own name including the critically acclaimed album Moonlit Planetarium (2016). Welcome to Dijf Sanders's wonderful journey into future exotica. THOT Now's The Only Time I Know 7"
This one is a special one, as it pictures the cover THOT made for "Now's The Only Time I Know" by the mighty Fever Ray. While it is close to the original, this cover reveals also a whole new perspective to Fever Ray's classic with a hectic and noisy feel, mixed in heavy and flashy colors. Side B is revealing a new interpretation of THOT's song "VLTAVA" remixed by Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe, White Horse, Revelator) who spans the song with a fierce and menacing touch.
