EASY A Heartbeat From Eternity CD
After celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of their classic debut album from 1990 Magic Seed (TURN 053CD/LP), Easy present a new album, A Heartbeat From Eternity. The top Swedish exports enjoyed writing songs again, and with producer Charlie Storm, they began recording once more. Two of the songs are throwbacks to the early nineties from when they began: the Manchester groove of "The Reincarnated" and the thundering "Song To Remember". Satisfied with what they had created they pressed some CDs to give away to friends. On a creative roll they decided to write some music to accompany the poems in Johan Holmlund's poetry collection: Swimming With The Beast. Pop songs -- The catchy joy of "I Can Tell You Why", the shimmering Velvets of "Little Boy", and the Chills-esque "A Picture".

PTTRNS Material Und Geschichte LP
What potential does popular music, with its notorious obsession with the past, hold for the imagination of future communities? And how can, in a most general sense, pop help us think about this? In other words: What are the domains and possibilities of "political" art today? These questions, as questions about the time and temporality of the political, are at the core of PTTRNS' new album Material Und Geschichte, produced with Andreas Spechtl (of Ja, Panik, among others) in a long Berlin summer in 2017. Over the course of 47 minutes, the album submits, lyrically and conceptually, the outline of a pervasive futurity. On the record's eight tracks, this futurity figures in three ways: First, as the time of the performance -- a time of the present that becomes indistinguishable from the future. This time of the event is marked in the physicality that has featured prominently on the band's last efforts and has always made for their famously infectious live appearances: the jam-like, funky quality of their sound. Secondly, time is introduced as a time of repetition: an excessive time that itself comes from the future and, in its exceeding the material present, folds it back to its origin. This repetition, presented with equal attention to form and expressivity, invokes a tradition that has, somewhat unfortunately, been identified as "krautrock". Thirdly, time features on Material Und Geschichte as a technological counter-time, or "Contretemps", as registered in a song title: This is the time of the producers' intervention, the dub, which opens up in the record's most free moments and, calling attention to the materiality of the record itself, marks the temporal suspension of the listener that always also is a possibility for action. Lyrically, the collective that is PTTRNS speaks in a communal voice. Connecting to their previous work, which focused on the possibilities of individual instances of sense-making, Material Und Geschichte frames these instances as ways of relating, as the presents of a future solidarity. This is mirrored in the production values of the record, which, as is usual for the band, is a communal effort. The record boasts a cast of notable collaborators in Rabea Erradi (Die Heiterkeit, Sleep) on saxophone, Sonja Deffner (Jason & Theodor, Die Heiterkeit) on clarinet and vocals, and Andreas Spechtl on vocals and guitar; the artwork is designed by Our Polite Society. Includes download code.

REGLER Regel #9 (Blues) LP
Subtitled: Blues For Western Civilization (For Audience And Tape). Regel #9 (Blues) is the latest release from the power duo Regler. On their previous two records on At War With False Noise, Regler have tackled harsh noise and heavy metal. Regler doing the blues? What the fuck is that gonna sound like? Well, it doesn't sound like Howlin' Wolf, that's for sure. But then, Anders Bryngelsson and Mattin are less about representing a sound and more about getting to the bottom of a genre, usually by taking it apart, or getting to the fulcrum of the style... or in this case, aggressively smashing the shit out of it until it surrenders. On one long track over two sides of an LP, Regler haven't produced a deconstruction of the blues, but rather a horrid bastardization of the blues: playing an open riff and caveman drum beat over and over... and over... and over... and over again, post-produced with samples representing the multitude of fucked-up things going on in the world in 2017. It's nearly an hour of unrelentingly bleak vibes. Is that not what the blues, in essence, is all about? The blues is -- at root -- reality, and this is what's shown bare here. Is it more horrible to hear a seemingly endless, turgid cacophony of guitar and drums with little variation or finesse, or to hear the death, pain, and suffering that is casually present at six o'clock every night with your egg and chips? Well, this record unsubtly asks that question. The sound of the record is massive, and has been mastered beautifully to vinyl. Utterly heavy and taking no prisoners, it's like the first track on From Enslavement To Obliteration by Napalm Death (1988) just kept going for the whole album. This isn't for the casual listener, but if you're a casual listener, of anything, you either a.) won't be reading about a new Regler record, and b.) won't be on this website. Unjoy! Edition of 120.

CHEVALREX Anti Slogan CD
Since 2016, Rémy Poncet, aka Chevalrex, sits among the top new French songwriters to watch thanks to Futurisme (BEC 5156452/BEC 5156453, 2016), an intimate sophomore album which he plays all the instruments, and also critically-acclaimed by the press. Wondering how one finds his/her place in today's world while staying true to him/herself, Chevalrex offers his answers in this third album and leaves behind his minimalist compositions to raise his ambitions and push his music into a whole other dimension. Recorded this time with additional musicians and even a whole string orchestra, Anti Slogan compiles ten songs meticulously crafted in which the worlds of Jim O'Rourke, Vincent Delerme, Tindersticks, and Boris Vian collide, showcasing a level of refinement hardly ever heard in the French pop scene. BIOSPHERE The Hilvarenbeek Recordings CD
Biophon present a remastered edition of Biosphere's The Hilvarenbeek Recordings, originally released in 2016.Review from A Strangely Isolated Place: "'As The Sun Kissed The Horizon' is one of my favorite Biosphere tracks. It's a recording of (what to me sounds like) the empty fields after a bustling summer's day, as the sun slowly sets and people leave for home. It reminds me of my summer's youth, and every time I listen, I picture myself in that exact field, the same field I spent my summers playing football in, hanging with friends and generally enjoying my childhood. Music has the power to reinvigorate lost memories and despite me never hearing this until years later, this track brings back memories every time Biosphere's The Hilvarenbeek Recordings capture a similar emotional response. Across the eight pieces, we're treated to a similar summer's day in 'tSchop. Biosphere is known for his field recordings, but they are sometimes lost amongst his more electronic productions, or in some instances, slightly too focused on extremely obscure sounds. This album is the perfect middle-ground and defines the Biosphere I enjoy the most. A subtle mixture of beautiful ambient formed from some of nature's finest textures -- sounds that have the power to transport you from your own relatable experiences."

HELDON Electronique Guerilla (Heldon I) CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's debut album Electronique Guerilla, originally released on Disjuncta in 1974. In 1973, 22-year old Richard Pinhas was well on his way to becoming a full-time philosopher. He had almost finished his PhD and begun teaching at the University of Paris. But he also had a hobby: writing music and recording it himself. When he submitted a few tracks to British label E.G. (home of King Crimson and Roxy Music), the imprint was interested, but Pinhas was frustrated to find out he'd have to wait a year for them to release anything. So Pinhas put out his first album on his own label, Disjuncta. He called the project Heldon (from a location in Norman Spinrad's 1972 sci-fi novel The Iron Dream). It might have been the first self-released rock record in France. "Or at least the first one that worked," says Pinhas. "It was like a musical and political event in France. Musical because there were few artists using synthesizers here, or even in the world. And political because we tried to say that the big companies make everything bad and their records are too expensive." Most of Electronique Guerilla was made by Pinhas alone, but "Ouais, Marchais, Mieux Qu'en 68" featured five collaborators, including one of his mentors, Gilles Deleuze. Over winding guitars and pointed percussion, the French philosopher reads lyrics taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Voyager and His Shadow" (1880). Despite being self-released -- with Pinhas himself delivering some stock directly to record stores -- Electronique Guerilla quickly sold over 19,000 copies. That convinced Pinhas he should make and release more music by himself -- but he would have little time for philosophy. "I had to make a decision, because at that point in France, you couldn't do two jobs," he remembers. "So I made this very bad choice to be a rock 'n' roll musician." It's a choice he's stuck to for four decades, and the fiery Electronique Guerilla provided a potent spark. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

HELDON Allez-Teia (Heldon II) CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's second album Allez-Teia, originally released on Disjuncta in 1975. Before making his own music in the early '70s, Richard Pinhas was a King Crimson fan. The British group has buzzed in Pinhas's mind for decades, but their greatest impact came early. When he first saw them play, Pinhas was struck by music played during intermission. "When I saw (King Crimson guitarist) Robert Fripp and Brian Eno perform in Paris later, I realized that the intermission music was their work," Pinhas said. "I didn't know that when I first heard it, but I was very impressed by it. It was the most important influence on Heldon." That influence is clear on Allez- Teia, originally released in 1975 on Pinhas's own Disjuncta label. "In The Wake Of King Fripp" is a soaring mix of string-like electronics and smeared guitar, a reference both to the guitarist and King Crimson's second album In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970). The meditative "Omar Diop Blondin", in which free tones float above a repetitive guitar figure, is dedicated to Fripp and Eno. A strong influence also comes from The Soft Machine's Robert Wyatt, who was slated to record some tracks with Pinhas for Allez-Teia until the expense of his travel from London to Paris proved prohibitive. Yet Allez-Teia -- the title a nod to the ancient Greek term for philosophical truth, "aletheia" -- is hardly a tribute album. The pieces Pinhas crafts with partner Georges Grunblatt -- guitar, Mellotron, ARP synths -- are beatific on the surface but infused with undercurrents of tension. Over four decades after he made Allez-Teia, Pinhas's admiration for King Crimson remains profound. He actually met Fripp in 1974, and the two still stay in touch. "We have a great friendship; he has been very helpful," says Pinhas. "Fripp has always been my Hendrix." Some artists might balk at admitting such strong influence over their own work, but for Pinhas it's all about respect. "In the academic world in France, you list your sources," says Pinhas, who received a PhD in philosophy before launching his music career. "So I thought it was good to say, 'Yes, we are influenced by this, and we are proud of it, and people have to know it.' The work of King Crimson at that time was very important. It's not a secret." 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

STATION 17 Blick CD
Station 17 present their tenth album Blick. From the liner notes by Julian Bätz: "If their preceding album Alles Für Alle (2014) represented the band's first pure pop creation, Blick is a triple backwards somersault in style. This will come as no surprise to anybody who has followed their progress over the past 30 years, crossing musical boundaries as they go. Experimentation is in the DNA of the band founded by musicians with and without disabilities. For the Blick recording sessions, they decided to shake off the dust of the town and the modern world, ensconcing themselves in the Watt'n Sound Studio on the North Sea. Three weeks in the summery seclusion of this coastal idyll enabled the band to cast off the pop restraints of their previous album and enter the realms of free improvisation. No predetermined structures, no preconceived lyrics, the music should exist in the moment, live in the present -- not even a basic key was set as a point of reference. Thanks to this creative freedom, Blick developed into a work which, on the one hand, relates to some of the greatest exponents of krautrock like Popol Vuh and, on the other, is a more relaxed, warmer, less vocals-focused cousin of Die Entstehung Der Nacht (2009) by the Goldenen Zitronen. Allusions to the legends of experimental, improvisation-friendly electro-krautrockers are quite reasonable, given the roll call of collaborators featured on this album. Step forward Andreas Dorau, Jean-Hervé Péron and Zappi Diermaier of faUSt, Andreas Spechtl (Ja, Panik), Pyrolator, Grosskopf Kranemann, Datashock, Günter Schickert and none other than Ulrich Schnauss, now a member of German electronic powerhouse Tangerine Dream. Emulating the modus operandi of the aforementioned, Blick documents the immediate, unfiltered and unalloyed interaction between the Station 17 musicians. The spectrum of this 'dialogue' is extended through the musical guests -- and captured sonically by Dirk Dresselhaus alias Schneider TM in the engineering room. . . . Once you have opened yourself up to the positive magic of the nine tracks on Blick, you are sure to discover the honest power lurking in the music of Station 17."

DIE WILDE JAGD Uhrwald Orange 2LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. The Uhrwald ("Clockwood") -- a place of dreams and sounds, with its own sense of time. Channeled into his band Die Wilde Jagd, Sebastian Lee Philipp's obsession for this place unleashes a uniquely spellbinding project of minimalist, tenebrous intensity. Recorded in the studio which lends its name to the sophomore album, Uhrwald Orange weaves a dense, atmospheric web of drama, romance, ecstasy, and melancholy. Die Wilde Jagd released their debut album in 2015 (BB 203CD/LP) when Philipp teamed up with producer Ralf Beck (Nalin & Kane, Unit 4). Beck excused himself from "daily business" shortly afterwards, but he retains an important influence on the new LP: Not only did he co-produce and mix the tracks (joined by Australian producer Kris Baha in the final mixdown process), but his collection of vintage analog synthesizers, drum computers, and studio equipment gives Die Wilde Jagd's music its unique, dexterously crafted character. Philipp locked himself in Beck's Uhrwald Orange studio for nights on end to transfer sonic interpretations of his world of images to tape: a nocturnal flight into the subconscious, into a strange world ("Fremde Welt") where ghostly creatures reside -- acid horses, bat boys, 2000 elephants ("Säuregäule", "Flederboy", "2000 Elefanten"). Flemish artist Frans Snyder (1579-1657) provides inspiration with his painting "Animals of the Night" as does the 14th-century collection of songs "Llibre Vermell de Montserrat". Philipp's repetitive electronic sequences include Mediterranean mandolins, psychedelic bass/guitar loops, Georgian choirs, and rattling North African krakebs. Medieval church music mixes with European folklore and improvised jams on this aural journey through the Orient and Occident -- from dark Nordic woods to the Eastern dawn. Philipp offers an insight into his hermetic world of ideas on eight tracks, enriched by sounds of nature captured on a trip through Portugal. Uhrwald Orange is, of course, also Philipp's ode to the recording studio itself, to the analog gear and the ubiquitous EMT Plate reverb. This is where he could realize the sound he imagined, all within Beck's own framework of compressors, preamps and signal paths. Philipp on his work in the studio: "I want to make the equipment in the studio sing, build a world of sound in which every tone, every effect has its own voice. . . . Every element can be found amongst the dwellers and natural forces of the 'Clockwood Orange'."

VA Musique Experimentale LP
Cacophonic present a reissue of Musique Expérimentale, originally released in 1962. Further concrète explorations from the second generation of forward-thinking sonic auteurs that would push the boundaries of experimental music known collectively as the Groupe de Recherches Musicales, founded by Pierre Schaeffer. Having found a job in 1936 at Radiodiffusion Française (later Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française, or RTF) as an engineer, Schaeffer developed a newly found interest in music and with the blessing of his superiors made the most of his access to the Radiodiffusion Française studios. In 1942 Schaeffer and influential theater director, producer, and actor Jacques Copeau founded the Studio d'Essai (renamed Club d'Essai in 1946) as part of RTF in order to experiment with radiophonic techniques. Drawing on the works of French filmmaker, critic, and novelist Jean Epstein, Schaeffer would occupy his time with the manner in which sound recordings "revealed what was hidden in the act of basic acoustic listening" and in 1948 formally set about his research in earnest. With word of his theories and experiments spreading, Schaeffer was able to press the RTF management to further finance and in doing so expand his research. He recruited a previous collaborator for help, the young classically-trained composer Pierre Henry. By adding sound engineer Jacques Poullin as well, Schaeffer was able to complete a powerhouse, which he renamed the Groupe de Musique Concrète. In 1951, RTF handed the trio the keys to one of the earliest purpose-build electroacoustic studios (the other being the WDR Studio in Germany), furnishing it with state of the art bespoke equipment such as a Morphophone (designed by Poullin; capable of tape loop-delay) and a Phonogène (designed by Poullin; a multi-headed tape instrument). As Schaeffer's notoriety grew and Pierre Henry pursued other projects, RTF underwent a different direction. In 1957, following a particularly prolonged absence on RTF duties, Schaeffer returned unhappy with the direction the group had taken and tabled an idea to revitalize both their approach as well as personnel. As a result, Henry and several other key members left the group the following year leaving Schaeffer to lay the foundations in 1958 for a new collective called Groupe de Recherches Musicales, and recruited new members including Iannis Xenakis, Henri Sauguet, Luc Ferrari, and Michel Philippot. Features works by François-Bernard Mâche, Romuald Vandelle, Michel Philippot, Luc Ferrari, and André Boucourechliev. Remastered; Includes original liners notes translated here for the first time.

Laolu & Raoul K's excellent debut EP for Compost Records is an amalgamation of state of the art house music, African rhythm, and sound textures being topped by the deep and spiritual vocals of Ahmed Sosso. With Sene Kela (2014), the duo easily bridged the gap between their African roots and modern house, between deepness and rave appeal. With "Djougou Yah", Laolu and Raoul K are picking up this vibe again but turning the wheel even further. With its punchy kick drum, stripped-back percussion work, striking synth arpeggios, and an epic breakdown, "Perc Mix" has got a perfect peak-time appeal.

HAWKINS, SCREAMIN' JAY At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins CD
Copacetic present a reissue of At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins, originally released in 1958. By far one of the most outrageous performers of the early years of rock, prone to emerging from coffins on stage, with a flaming skull named Henry as his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable. His 1958 debut, At Home, featuring his legendary "I Put A Spell On You," along with surreal hits like "Hong Kong," "Take Me Back To The Boot And Saddle," or his wild-ass reinventions of old standards like "I Love Paris" and "Deep Purple" is a carefully arranged yet gritty, Ray Charles-gone-crazy styled, full band rhythm, and blues masterpiece, filled with enough howls and groans to send chills down your spine. Includes 13 bonus tracks, including several alternate takes.

VA Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk 1981 to 1988 2LP
Repressed again; double LP version. "Following successful disco excavation from the Caribbean to South Africa, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul booked a first class ticket to Narita to bring you the latest release, Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk: 1981 to 1988. This compilation presents 12 of the most memorable and sought-after songs of the era recorded by female artists. The music is a reflection of the unbridled optimism, technological achievement, excess and exuberance of Bubble-era Japan. More than catchy melodies and funky baselines, these are reflections of a time when Japan was the center, and future of the world. The Bubble can be characterized as an endless, extravagant party where personal and corporate wealth soared through the explosion of real estate and stock prices. Scores of young Japanese men and women moved to cities in search of affluence, transforming them into neon wonderlands. Changes in morals, values and gender roles followed suit. Prosperity leads to indulgence, and the taste for nightlife, from flashy restaurants to glitzy discotheques, was unquenchable. A soundtrack to this new, lavish lifestyle was necessary and the latest sound, City Pop (urban pop music for those with urban lifestyles), epitomized these attitudes. While influenced by American R&B and boogie, elements of fusion, YMO style Technopop, and adult-oriented rock (AOR) are front and center. Sung primarily in Japanese (with a word or two of English sprinkled in), City Pop is Japanese music for Japanese people. Producers like Tatsuro Yamashita, Toshiki Kadomatsu, and Haruomi Hosono were quick to embrace the latest studio equipment and technology. Synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7, Roland Juno-60, ARP Quadra, Moog Polymoog and Oberheim OB-8, as well as drum machines like the Linndrum, were prevalent. Digital reverb was applied liberally. Compiled by Eli Cohen (Alliance Upholstery) and Deano Sounds (Cultures of Soul), Tokyo Nights includes tracks by Hitomi Tohyama, Junko Ohashi, Mizuki Koyama, Kaoru Akimoto, Aru Takamura, Mariko Tone, Rie Murakami, RA MU, Kikuchi Momoko and Yumi Seino. Each selection celebrates the unique traits and meticulous production that define the sound. Think sandy beaches and metropolitan skylines; illumination and romance. Embrace the feeling of movement, from a coastal highway stretching towards the horizon or the city sprawling into the future. Turn on the hi-fi and slip into these Tokyo Nights."

ABYSS X Pleasures Of The Bull 12"
Taking its title from a Minoan legend that deals with rage, greed and destruction, the latest release from Abyss X expands and reconstructs conceptions of aural space and time. Pleasures Of The Bull finds the multi-disciplinary artist and producer flirting with the sounds of hard jazz while mystifying the parameters of experimental music. Intoxicating, ambient textures mesh with Abyss X's own expressive vocals, as well as the sounds of the traditional Cretan lyra, played by Maria Skoula. Prog rock guitar lines twist stolidly beneath warped vocal samples, and the timbre of the bowed lyra permeates the atmosphere.

ATOBE, SHINICHI Butterfly Effect 2LP
2018 limited repress. Shinichi Atobe has managed to stay off the grid since he made an appearance on Basic Channel's Chain Reaction imprint back in 2001. He delivered the second-to-last 12" on the label and then disappeared without a trace, leaving behind a solitary record that's been selling for crazy money and a trail of speculation that has led some people to wonder whether the project was in fact the work of someone on the Basic Channel payroll. That killer Chain Reaction 12" has also been a longtime favorite of Demdike Stare, who have been trying to follow the trail and make contact with Atobe for some time, whoever he turned out to be. A lead from the Basic Channel office turned up an address in Japan and -- unbelievably -- an album full of archival and new material. Demdike painstakingly assembled and compiled the material for this debut album. And what a weird and brilliant album it is -- deploying a slow-churn opener that sounds like a syrupy Actress track, before working through a brilliantly sharp and tactile nine-minute piano house roller that sounds like DJ Sprinkles, then diving headlong into a heady, Vainqueur-inspired drone-world. It's a confounding album, full of odd little signatures that give the whole thing a timeless feeling completely detached from the zeitgeist, like a sound bubble from another era. This is only the second album release on Demdike Stare's DDS imprint, following the release of Nate Young's Regression Vol. 3 (Other Days) (DDS 007LP) in 2013. Who knows what they might turn up next? Mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

BLUME, FELIX Death In Haiti: Funeral Brass Bands & Sounds from Port Au Prince LP
15 dead, 15 funerals, 16 funeral processions, one procession with no dead, five churches, one cemetery, onewake. 15 hours of recorded sounds are condensed into a vivid sound portrait depicting the way funerals and burials are lived in Haiti. Recorded in Port au Prince by sound artist Félix Blume in early December 2016, this plunges the listener into a world of pain, loss, and solemn celebration as each funeral comprises its own live jazz band as well as a plethora of characters like the joker ("le blaguer") who cracks jokes and tales about the recently deceased. A beautiful document of a thriving tradition, a counterpart or updated version of those famous dirge jazz records such as the New Orleans Eureka Brass Band on Folkways. Félix Blume is a sound artist and sound engineer. His personal work is based on field-recordings and uses sound as a raw source, in sound pieces, radio plays, videos, actions, and installations. Another unique document of Kink Gong's, aka Laurent Jeanneau, collection of surreal soundscapes of augmented field recordings, this time turning into his love/hate relationship with China into a mesmerizing soundscape of unclassifiable music. Jeanneau on Dian L: "Before becoming Kink Gong I had different names, one of my projects, designed by cultural circumstances in China at the beginning of the 21st century, was Dian Long ('electric dragon' in Chinese). I landed in Shanghai in 2000 in order to make music and recordings of whatever. Faced with the cruel tendency of modern China to reject tradition and embrace full on bling-bling culture, my option was to attack this music industry commercial flavor by destroying it. I had in my bag a faithful portable CD player who knew how to turn syrup into crystal. Later, reaching Yunnan in 2001, I discovered the reality away from the bling-bling of eastern towns and did a realistic soundscape of it."

Herman de Vries on the record: "At the summer party on the occasion of my soon-to-be 80th birthday, many friends came. As it said on the invitation: 'the Eschenau Chaos Band will play.' while the party was going on, people asked me when that band would be playing, and I replied: 'Now! You are that band', and I randomly handed out all of these instruments. Hartmut Geerken was clued in and had brought some as well -- Sun Ra's sun harp among others. I started with a Moroccan hand drum, bendir, and off it went. unpracticed."Herman de Vries, born 1931 in Alkmaar, is a Dutch visual artist who has been living in Eschenau in the Steigerwald region (Franconia, Germany) since 1970. Having started out as an Art Informel painter in the 1950s, his interests shifted in the ensuing years, and in the 1970s, he became focused on found objects from nature and their artistic-philosophical qualities and implications. He has made paintings, collages, texts, sculptures, installations, among other art, and has dealt with plants, earth, and other parts of nature from botanical, medical, historical, as well as psychedelic viewpoints. GILBERT, BRUCE Ex Nihilo LP
Editions Mego's 250th release continues its ongoing legacy of cross-pollinating and perverting various threads of radical 20th century music whilst concocting and propelling further ideas into the nebulous region where we all currently reside. With Ex Nihilo, Editions Mego resumes its enduring relationship with long-term collaborator and stalwart representative of the label's aesthetic with a new release from London's most charming deviant occupant, Bruce Gilbert (formerly of Wire, Dome, etc.) Gilbert's peculiar approach to sound over four decades has seen him engage with a wide variety of practice and performance always hovering amongst the grey area between his mind and the surrounding architecture. Ex Nihilo is another significant entry into Gilbert's outer sound-book. Inhabiting a murky zone between interference and trauma, Ex Nihilo is a daring and dark audio ride through a contemporary ketamine haze, one which haunts identifiable parameters whilst remaining too oblique to be truly quantified. "Change And Not" teases discomfort, "Black Mirrors" embraces disorder, "Nomad" skirts the unsettling. Whilst never quite resolving its own logic, Ex Nihilo invites the casual listener to privy a devastating peculiar and somewhat paranoid fantasy (reality?). Another effortless Gilbert classic. Design: David Coppenhall; front image/concept: Bruce Gilbert. Mastered by Russell Haswell. Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates and Mastering, Berlin.

THOLLEM/DUROCHE/STJAMES TRIO Live In Our Time CD
Through the wood, sinew, skins, metal, and fingers, one hears the years of experiential exploration, responsive nuances, and overwhelming power in the trio's joyfully intense playing. They cover a lot of territory in this recording, conjuring epochs and eras, terrains and cultures. This is improvised music composed spontaneously out of the breadth of experiences. André Stjames is a cornerstone of the rich, thriving Pacific Northwest jazz scene and works regularly with his own ensemble, Mel Brown, The Kin Trio, Gordon Lee, Renato Caranto, and many others. Over the last three decades, Stjames has worked with Sonny Rollins, the Harold Land-Blue Mitchell Quintet, Andrew Hill Trio and large bands, Bobby Hutcherson, Charlie Rouse, Pharoah Sanders, and more. Stjames's strong sense of lyricism, buoyancy, and surging momentum, as well as a deep respect for both tradition and innovation, have taken him to both ends of the jazz spectrum -- from torch songs and two-beat to bop and beyond. Tim DuRoche works regularly with the collective ensemble Battle Hymns & Gardens and The Kin Trio, and has logged extensive time with an array of US and European avant-garde jazz innovators, including Dominic Duval, Burton Greene, Matana Roberts, Paul Plimley, Lisle Ellis, Wally Shoup, Gust Burns, Bert Wilson, and Urs Leimgruber, among others. Tim is the host of "The New Thing", a weekly radio jazz radio show on KMHD 89.1 FM, and is the author of the book Occasional Jazz Conjectures (2011). Thollem's spent his life skirting and erasing the edges of boundaries musically, culturally, geographically. His work is ever-changing, evolving and responding to the times and his experiences, both as a soloist and in collaboration with hundreds of artists across idioms and disciplines including William Parker, Susie Ibarra, Nels Cline, Amy Denio, Faruq Z. Bey, Michael Wimberly, John Butcher, Gino Robair, Pauline Oliveros, and Hafez Modirzadeh, among many, many others. "He inhabits a world uniquely his own, rhythmically, harmonically and formally." --Terry Riley This is Thollem's third appearance on ESP-Disk', following The Naked Future's Gigantomachia (ESPDISK 4053CD, 2009) and TSIGOTI's Private Poverty Speaks To The People Of The Party (ESPDISK 4057CD, 2009). CURRAN, BUCK Morning Haikus, Afternoon Ragas CD
On Buck Curran's second solo album, Morning Haikus, Afternoon Ragas, the emphasis switches to acoustic guitar, as compared to his first solo album, Immortal Light (ESPDISK 5014CD/LP, 2016). Side A, all solo acoustic instrumentals, seems to have fallen out of a wormhole emanating from Takoma Records in the 1970s. There's some of that on side B as well, but there are also vocals and other instruments, sometimes overdubbed, and the dedication of "Taurus" to Peter Green, guitarist extraordinaire of the original lineup of Fleetwood Mac (when they were a blues band), hinting at the breadth of Curran's influences. The introduction of other timbres and textures doesn't diminish the intimate, almost meditational mood, though. Co-released by ESP-Disk' and Curran's own Obsolete Recordings. Personnel: Buck Curran - vocals, guitars, harmonium, flute, banjo; Adele Pappalardo - vocals on "Dirt Floor"; Nicolò Melocchi - Bansuri flute on "Bhairavi Rovelli". Mastering by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering. CD version includes five additional tracks. "Crucible" is an archival recording made in the Summer of 2000, showing the development of Curran's musical style."Guitar tones linger and reverberate with a mystical translucence" --Dusted."Curran's music invokes swarming natural forces, looking for the borderline between the real and the sublime and, maybe, the supernatural." --Jesse Jarnow, Relix

EX, THE 27 Passports CD
"The Ex released their previous regular studio album as a four-piece (Catch My Shoe) in 2010. While that might seem like a long stretch, their schedule since then tells you another story. The band also released a second album with Ethiopian legend Getatchew Mekuria, and another one with Brass Unbound, featuring several of their friends from the realm of free improvisation. On top of that, there were also a few 7-inches, several phenomenal birthday festivals and a lavish photo book that was published as a tribute to the late Getatchew Mekuria in 2016. But now there's new music, with the unmistakable 'Ex energy.' The three-pronged guitar approach is still as exciting as ever, with the guitars of Andy Moor, Terrie Hessels and Arnold de Boer creating tense, interlocking webs of connections and drummer Katherina Bornefeld pushing the band with dancing, hypnotic patterns. There are some remnants of their African adventures, but most of all, this is a return to the power of The Ex as a unit that effortlessly juggles noisy / disjointed guitar parts, trance-like grooves, defiant chanting and a relentless, infectious drive. Colorful and fierce at the same time, 27 Passports once again expands their horizon and enriches their sound, while remaining true to the core of their philosophy: forward in all directions!" --Guy Peters

CURRITUCK CO. Sleepwalks in the Garden of the Deadroom LP
"Finally, in 2018, the full and correct version of Currituck Co.'s fourth album is made public. The operating handle of guitarist Kevin Barker, one of the best players to emerge from the Mid-Atlantic völk underground of the early oughts, Currituck Co. cut five albums between 2000 and 2005, all of which are gorgeous. The original CD version of Sleepwalks, however, released by Track & Field in 2004, was shorn of couple of tracks and featured re-recorded vocals Kevin always thought were a bit naff. This came up in conversation with Kevin a while back, and we offered to right a grievous wrong. The result is this beauty, which has a few extra instruments (like cello by Fern Knight), but is mostly just Kevin on acoustic, electric and vocals. There's always been a Jansch-ian vibe to Kevin's work, which is made explicit here by a great cover of Bert's 'Silly Woman.' More often it's Kevin's guitar picking that sounds haunted by Jansch, with cleanly complex melodies and slippery string shifts. But the way he blends shards of electric amp squeal into the background is uniquely his own. There might be some parallels to certain moments in Ben Chasny's work, but Kevin's genteel vocals have a lost '72 Americana thing going on that is thoroughly great. One friend of mine complains his voice is 'too sweet,' but this ignores the dark leavening of the instrumental inventions. Kevin may remain best known for his work as a sideman with Vetiver, Antony & the Johnsons, Joanna Newsom and so on, but we will always place our bets with Currituck Co. The hot smoke of this album should show you why." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

WET TUNA Livin' The Die LP
"Utterly boo-licious debut slab by this new duo, made up of Matt 'MV' Valentine and Pat 'P.G. Six' Gubler, who have been in cahoots since the near-forgotten days of Memphis Luxure. The pair (mostly known for guitar-aktion) create a full band's worth of jams using percussion and keys and all-else. The results make for one of the more mind-melting platters to've hit the Valley in a good while. Like many of the best sides this pair has been associated with, the music on Livin' The Die is an elegant balance of ramble and spear. The songs' formats are as loose as Earl Butz's shoes but each of them is lanced with guitar sounds as tight as his legendary fist. Around these spumes of electric menace you'll find rings of crazy space burble, vocals so deeply layered they sound like something happening in the back of Daevid Allen's brain. But large swathes of the album are rurally expansive, as befits the mountainside on which it was recorded. Pods of guitar-pedal-whomp slowly surface in the middle of whirling sea of harmonica slurps, juice harp bwongs and vocals as dreamy as they are lost. Roll a bone or be one. The choice, as always, is yours." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 500.

PERRY, JORDAN Jordan Perry LP
"Much needed reissue of the extremely limited 2017 debut LP by Virginia guitarist, Jordan Perry. We were turned on to it when Chris Guttmacher at Blue Bag Records in Cambridge told Kassie Richardson of Good Cry (who did the initial 100 pressing) to send us a copy. He thought we might be into it, and halfway into one spin we knew he was right. There have been several fat boatloads of acoustic guitar players floating across our turntable the past few years. And to be honest, we've dug the majority of them. Seems like there must be a lot of good stuff in the water, or something. Despite this, a preponderance of the players we've enjoyed have definitely been in the American Primitive mode. Lots of swift modal aktion with a folk/blues base, invaded by various foreign agents. Jordan Perry's approach to his guitar is quite different. Although there are some basic völk sonorities in his playing, Mr. Perry's brunt combines these with more avant garde note selections and compositional gambits, as well as a string attack with classical qualities. While there's a gentleness to the melodies at which he eventually arrives, Perry's journey crosses prickly patches of tone clusters, and has a circular logic that defies pop logic. A few passages recall moments on All Is Ablaze, our recent album with experimental player Julia Reidy (FTR 338LP), while some of the open strumming has a beautifully languid quality verging on mid period William Ackerman. All of which makes this a record very deserving of much personal headspace. Give Jordan Perry some room and you'll be very glad you did. We promise." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

VA Cronica Tecnica 2LP
During the eighties, in Spain, tons of electronic music cassettes appeared, often unipersonal, where the artist himself became the editor and distributor of his works. It was DIY at its purest. The appearance of the multitrack recorder and cassette duplicators helped the emergence of this soon international underground movement. The first cassettes published in Spain, framed within the electronic music, came from pioneers such as Esplendor Geométrico, La Otra Cara De Un Jardín, and el Internado (the first project of fame Francisco López). Shortly after, artists and labels appeared throughout the Spanish geography, such as Ortega y Cassette and Laboratorio de Música Desconocida, both in Barcelona, Auxilio de Cientos (Granada), Consumo del Miedo (Jaén), Necronomicón (Puertollano), STI (Zaragoza), and others. The underground electronic scene in Madrid during the eighties was agglutinated largely around cassette seals such as Toracic Tapes (directed by Miguel A. Ruiz), I.E.P. (founded by musician Luis Mesa), Proceso Uvegraf (Juan Teruel), and EGK (the sublabel for cassettes of Discos Esplendor Geométrico). Cronica Técnica is a compilation of themes from this scene recorded between 1981 and 1991, most of which were originally published on cassette, and which focused mainly on industrial, noise, and experimental music. Followers of the industrial music and the experimental underground of the seventies and eighties (Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Esplendor Geométrico, Maurizio Bianchi, SPK, Asmus Tietchens, etc.) will appreciate and be surprised with this selection for its quality, especially thinking that this music has been kept hidden since then. The selection was made by Andrés Noarbe, manager and editor of Esplendor Geométrico since its founding in 1980 and director of the pioneer label in publishing electronic music in Spain: Discos E.G. (now Geometrik Records). He lived this movement of cassette labels in Spain in the first row from the beginning, and met most of its protagonists. Cronica Técnica is edited by Geometrik Records in collaboration with Munster Records, and is the second volume of the Spanish Underground Cassette Movement series after the first one: Fungus Cerebri (GR 2139LP, 2016), dedicated entirely to Esplendor Geométrico. Cronica Técnica features Orfeon Gagarin, Uvegraf, Funeral Souvenir, Miguel A. Ruiz, Técnica Material, La Otra Cara De Un Jardín, and Luis Mesa. Includes an eight-page, A4 booklet with information, images, photos, and two exclusive texts, in Spanish and English, by Francisco Felipe (La Otra Cara De Un Jardín) and Andrés Noarbe; Edition of 500.

JB'S, THE Hustle With Speed LP
"Get On Down proudly presents another top-notch vinyl reissue, from their long-running series of collaborations with James Brown's famed 70s funk label People Records. As the 1970s wore on, the classic funk sounds that had defined James Brown's backing band, The J.B.'s, gave way to the rise of disco music. Fred Wesley and his collective of musicians couldn't resist the chance to make their mark, releasing Hustle With Speed in 1975, with Charles Bobbit and Don Love producing, and the godfather himself, James Brown co-writing and providing arrangements. Hustle With Speed didn't cross over like the band had hoped it would, but it was nonetheless remarkable album, featuring The J.B.'s signature funky style married with disco to exciting effect. All the while there's still plenty to be had for the funk die-hard, from the brass blow-out jam 'Here We Come, Here We Go, Here We Are', to the trombone-heavy 'All Aboard The Funky Soul Train', to the powerhouse opening salvo that is '(It's Not The Express) It's The JBs Monaurail'. Songs from Hustle With Speed would take on lives of their own decades after the album's release, through sampled appearances in tracks by Jay-Z, Nas, Eric B. & Rakim, Ultramagnetic MCs, EPMD, and many more."

DR. OCTAGON Blue Flowers - Shaped Picture Disc PIC. DISC
"With the celebrated return of Dr. Octagon (Dan the Automator, Kool Keith and DJ QBert) in 2017 -- including their first-ever live performances -- fans are sure to keep gobbling up the space weirdness that first surfaced more than 20 years ago. Get On Down presents a unique picture disc, featuring the original Octagon album artwork by the legendary artist Pushead. The infamous doctor's head and lower torso reach above and below the actual 45rpm playing surface, as if trying to escape their two-dimensional status. On the A-side is a brand-new Dr. Octagon song, 'Octagon Octagon,' which picks up where the original energy left off. It's a dark and grooving glimpse into Keith's rubberband mind, jumping abstractly from line to line, chock full of equal parts charisma and dementia. On the flip is the song for which the group is most well-known, 'Blue Flowers.' The version presented here is the amazing 'Prince Paul's So Beautiful' remix, which first appeared on a Mo Wax 12" in the UK in late 1996. It was the first meeting of the two great production minds from different eras -- Dan the Automator and Prince Paul would go on to collaborate many more times over the next decade, most notably as the group Handsome Boy Modeling School. This is another great trophy for any self-respecting Kool Keith and Dan The Automator fan, combining the old and the new in triumphant fashion."

BROSHUDA Jemi LP
On his first release for Milan's Haunter Records, Berlin-based producer Broshuda generates simple yet complex emotional vignettes. Evading all definitions, he makes use of an array of tools and techniques akin to those of classic dub and contemporary sound design on obscure/random equipment, drawing from a limited pool of sound sources while paying a lot of attention to detail in the construction of sound. His post-rave power ambient poems coalesce with a pronounced melodic element, giving the release a profoundly introspective and earthy character, blurring and masquerading different layers of sound into new forms and shapes. "Goscha" features Vuptes.

NEBULA Dos EPs CD
Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Nebula's compilation album Dos EPs, originally released in 2002. Nebula is one of those bands that would have fit perfectly on a concert bill with Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, or the Stooges circa 1973. The power trio of Eddie Glass (vocals, guitars), Ruben Romano (drums), and Mark Abshire (bass) has quietly fused a somewhat modernized, but highly distinctive '70s hard rock sound all its own. Dos EPs combines the very limited Sun Creature EP (1999) and the Meteor City split (1998) with three additional songs that groove on raunchy guitar hooks, opaque slacker vocals, and bleed-heavy drumming. Of the unreleased material, "Long Day" pegs an infectious hard-luck guitar swagger against a catchy slippery rhythm, while "Rocket" and "Bardo Airways" scream in a straightforward attack that would make any old-school AC/DC or Judas Priest fan proud. Also sounding retro-fresh are previously released rockers "Full Throttle", "Fall Of Icarus", and "Rollin' My Way To Freedom", which all intertwine nicely together. "Smokin' Woman" is truly a signature piece that blisters in a fog of heavy fuzzed-out mid-song riffage. Despite the presence of occasional lyrical fluff, it's the shredding musical jams that should satisfy desert rock listeners, making Dos EPs essential for Nebula collections. Dos EPs was released in 2002 on Meteor City. The songs were engineered by Jack Endino and Joe Hogan. Includes unlisted bonus tracks.

OLIVERI, NICK N.O. Hits At All Vol. 4 CD
Nick Steven Oliveri (born October 21, 1971) is an American musician from Palm Desert, California. He plays bass guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and is a vocalist. He is most widely known as a bassist with Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Dwarves, and has also performed with the reunited Kyuss under the names Kyuss Lives! and Vista Chino. As a bandleader, his main project is Mondo Generator, a punk/metal hybrid that he formed in 1997. Born in Los Angeles, Oliveri began his career in 1987 with John Garcia, Brant Bjork, Josh Homme, and Chris Cockrell under the name Katzenjammer. In early 1989, after Oliveri's departure to play in other bands, the band would change its name to Sons of Kyuss, later shortening the name to Kyuss. He later rejoined the band, playing on the albums Wretch (1991) and Blues for the Red Sun (1992). Oliveri would leave Kyuss again in early 1992, shortly after his father died in a car accident. Following his departure from Kyuss he joined The Dwarves as an on-again, off-again bassist under the moniker Rex Everything. However he is perhaps best known as a member of Queens of the Stone Age from 1998 to 2004. Oliveri is also a solo artist and frequent contributor to his friends' albums and tours, including Winnebago Deal, Mark Lanegan Band, Masters of Reality, Turbonegro, Moistboyz aka Dickie Moist and the O.T.C., and The Knives. In the past he has been involved with The Desert Sessions Vol. 4 (1998) and Vol. 6 (1999). Oliveri is known for playing bare chested and sometimes naked at gigs. He was arrested in Brazil, after performing nude on stage at the Rock in Rio festival in Rio de Janeiro. He is one half of the acoustic duo The Uncontrollable, with The Dwarves frontman Blag Dahlia. Oliveri on the record: "Now for the first time, all these songs and bands I've recorded with over the past 25 years are together and available to you to trip out on." Vol. 4 features The Uncontrollable, Biblical Proof Of UFOs, Death Acoustic, Loading Data, The Dwarves, He Who Can Not Be Named, Rattlin' Bones, and Jennifer Finch's Brats On The Beat featuring the Gabba Gabba Heys.

AVON Dave's Dungeon CD
Dave's Dungeon boldly follows Avon's first LP Mad Marco (2016) with a marked progression, rawness, defiance and it certainly packs a punch. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by James Childs, the group is on fire. "Yello" kicks off the album clearly showing the band's roots in punk rock delivered with an "in your face" clarity. Meanwhile "Terraformations" settles you into a machine like "robot rock" ride, immediately providing the listener with classic Hernandez drums and Childs's distinctive guitar style bound with solid bass riffing from Pasarell that tells a story of human conquest. Next in line is more "in your face" punk rock about personal memories gigging at the "Red Barn" that is a famous venue in the California desert. "Hero With A Gun" shows the band's diversity with dreamy instrumentation, melody, and production conjuring thoughts of California on the big screen. "Mace Face" is a "secret agent" style Avon standard that delightfully punches its way through to your heart. "P51" shreds with a guitar harmonics style similar to Maiden's Killers (1981), giving an apt description of the classic American fighter aircraft. Kicking back in the desert with "Space Native" and realizing how big and lost one can feel, only to snap right back to reality with "On Fire" agreeing to disagree in a nod to some schoolboy led heroes. "Dungeon Dave" relates to the album's title and is about a very special place for the band members on tour in Europe close to Eutopia. The album comes to a close with just three words "Was Ist Los?" performed with their unmistakable space rock style that will surely be a classic Avon "mantra", simply meaning "what is wrong?"

BELLENS, JACOB Trail Of Intuition CD
With his new album Trail Of Intuition Danish singer and songwriter Jacob Bellens once again is shimmering somewhere in-between electronically influenced songwriting and synth-pop music, using his characteristic voice to reflect on his life's journey. The Copenhagen-based musician has released numerous songs and albums with his previous bands, I Got You On Tape and Murder, with side projects, and features as well as a solo artist. Trail Of Intuition is his fourth solo album and the second one that's internationally signed with HFN. Bellens wrote all the songs for Trail Of Intuition on his computer, with the final production made mostly by Rune Borup and Lars Iversen (The Asteroids Galaxy Tour). Trail Of Intuition is a collection of snapshots of the whole range of feelings for which Bellens digs into the pool of his own experiences. With a significant focus on pop music, an electronic synth twist, and catchy song structures, Trail Of Intuition feels both, bright and melancholic, in many ways. The opener "Sunrise In East" combines warm piano sounds with a semi-psychedelic fantasy and references both personal memories as well as thoughts about nuclear war and druggy, sleeping bees. The rather upbeat single "Renegade" deals with the experience of loss as well as the fear of losing a loved one again, but it also draws on youthful aspirations. Driven by a groovy electronic bass, it has an optimistic and hopeful vibe although lyrically it's one of the darker songs on the album. While "All The Songs" and "Sound Of Laughter" are in many ways merely classical love songs, "Brick By Brick" revolves around the love for the process of making and creating music one day after another. "Friday" is about longing to be somewhere else, dreaming about packing your bags and taking off. "One Of A Kind", creates a darkish but groovy atmosphere, with sluggish piano tones and strings by Ida Marie Arendt and Kirstine Elise Pedersen adding a bit of drama and trumpet (Mikkel Grevsen) offering a festive moment. With Trail of Intuition, Bellen's heads out for the fourth time to tell his story wrapped in catchy pop tunes full of playful oddity to steal the hearts of his (soon-to-be) fans all over the world. CD version comes in a digipack.

SKIN CRIME Ghosts I Have Been CD
Ghosts I Have Been is the first album from the supreme atmospheric noise band Skin Crime since their colossal 20-CD box set collection on Hospital Productions in 2015. Anyone who attended the Hospital Productions 20 Years Festival in New York City and saw Skin Crime perform their first live show in nearly 15 years will understand the deep masterful balance of tension, texture, and dynamism that has been the signature since the early '90s of this cult and collectible project. A defining characteristic is the fact that Skin Crime is a band with multiple members which brings live space and intricacy to a genre otherwise isolated to the confines of stagnation. Ghosts I Have Been exhibits the usual mix of concrete sounds with raw electric noise slowly and seamlessly building into crescendo. Unlike the early obsession with various forms of butchery, Ghosts I Have Been shows the darker more austere side of the subject matter of decay, small rural towns, an antique shop with an uncanny selection of dusty old books of stories you might rather not know about, or an old library which seems eager to open its doors to readers but reluctant to open them. GEOGRAPHY OF HELL Hiroshima 1945/Nagasaki 1945 2LP
After a series of cassette-only releases detailing the major natural and manmade disasters of the world, Geography Of Hell, a mysterious collective with an international cast of members completes their debut and arguably most immersive work yet, Hiroshima 1945/Nagaskai 1945. While their refusal to answer questions or make their identities known, the dedication to familiar subjects presented without explanation makes this band and their debut live performance in New York City in the fall of 2017 (as one of the highlights of the Hospital 20 Years Festival). Members were concealed behind bizarre homemade masks while frantic and mesmerizing multi-screen videos played of drawings and footage pre- and post-atomic attacks on Japan. This tragic and controversial moment is explored on two LPs ranging from insane martial loops to the most distant rumblings and shore breeze. Hailing in reverse order, the intensity and rhythmic sequencing on this LP defines expectations by slowly reducing and eliminating its compositions as the album closes with sub ambience. The anticipated vinyl release following the collectible and scarce nature of a series of tape releases, Hiroshima 1945/Nagaskai 1945 is the master work of one of most true contemporary industrial collectives, in that it is a group effort with accreditation or compromise. It easily fits into cinematic compositions as well as contemporary avant-garde electronics and even the nether regions of neoclassical punk. Prepared and mastered for vinyl by Kris Lapke (Alberich). Hospital Productions present a vinyl reissue of Merzbow's Noisembryo, originally released on CD by The Releasing Eskimo in 1994. Noisembryo is a holy grail, not only of Merzbow's obsessive discography, but of the entire '90s noise movement. You've heard the stories surrounding the infamy of this release, but beyond that stands the depth and wild energy that Noisembryo encapsulates over two decades later. High-speed loops, roving automotive bass, and cacophonic drum machines gel together with the surprising inclusion of a sound rarely heard within Merzbow's many years... Masami Akita's own voice. Akita's surrealism of the past stands prominently relevant to this day. PRURIENT/HANGED MANS ORGASM Unknowns LP
Originally released as a bonus cassette to Prurient's Rainbow Mirror (HOS 597LP, 2017), Unknowns appears here on vinyl as two side-long collaborative tracks from Dominick Fernow, joined by longtime producer Kris Lapke (Alberich), with Patrick O'Neal (Skin Crime). Hanged Mans Orgasm was the earliest project from O'Neal starting in the late '80s and early '90s that could be a rural American counterpart to England's Nurse With Wound middle period. Consisting of unrecognizable, discomforting electric acoustic noises mixed with radiation noise, Prurient fills the void with sub-bass electronics and a caustic reading of the Rainbow Mirror short story written in collaboration with Scott Bryan Wilson. A vocal counterpart to the otherwise instrumental Rainbow Mirror album. The B side is a reworking of field recordings and woodland screams recording in Rhode Island and reworked in New York City around the time O'Neal and Fernow first met. Housed in a deluxe sleeve with manual artwork by visual artist Adam Marnie, whose works have been featured previously on Prurient's epic Frozen Niagara Falls (2015). CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING Satie I Hoj So LP
The Institute for Danish Sound Archeology and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark present a reissue of the most enigmatic and rare of Danish artist and composer Henning Christiansen's albums Satie I Høj Sø. Originally released in 1977, the album collects five central works from Christiansen's neo-romantic period in the 1970s. This completely overlooked and virtually unheard period in Henning Christiansen's oeuvre contains perhaps his most fascinating and beautiful works. For ten years, from 1969-79, Christiansen turned his back to the art scene and made a very unorthodox artistic decision: To leave behind "art for arts sake", fluxus, and the concretist art music, that he had invented in the 1960s. Instead he created a music that was a positive vision for the future. A music that would make it "sing" inside the listeners -- and by changing them would change the world. A convinced communist, Christiansen created wonderful joyous waltzes and dancing melodies that set to bring about a revolution -- both an inner and an outer revolution -- by believing in the good in the world and by having hope for a bright future. Now, with the re-release of Satie I Høj Sø the music can make it sing inside us again. "Art should be such, that the People believe in themselves" --Henning Christiansen, journal entry, 1971. Carefully remastered from the original master tapes; 180 gram vinyl; High gloss cover; Henning Christiansen's own program notes for the music in both Danish and English -- 16-page booklet with never-before-seen pictures and a new in-depth article about Christiansen's works from the 1970s in Danish and English.

As I plan to focus Graded on my own Midland solo work for the foreseeable future, and with ReGraded occupying a different aesthetic plane altogether, the logical step was to start a new label that could help introduce this music to a wider audience."

GILLESPIE QUARTET, DIZZY At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 2CD
Recorded March 23rd, 1978 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie - trumpet & vocal; Rodney Jones - guitar; Benjamin Brown - bass; Mickey Roker - drums; and special guest Leo Wright - alto saxophone."Considering the current developments on the market for Presidents of the United States one should probably remind the public, that even this strange bird -- John Birks Gillespie from Cheraw, South Carolina, born in October 1917, nicknamed 'Dizzy' since the start of his professional career and thus declared a bit crazy -- once wanted to become President of the United States. Seriously? Most probably not. But back in 1964, the year after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in a country marked by traumatised resignation also in view of Lyndon B. Johnson, Kennedy's deputy who had taken over the top job, there was a small-scale but inventive campaign: 'Vote Dizzy!' . . . In March 1978, fourteen years on from this political super-joke, Dizzy's quartet was back in Hamburg. Of course they also stopped by at Onkel Pö. By then the musician was 60 years old and had reached cult-status long before. The previous years he had toured from festival to festival together with the squad of impresario Norman Granz. On one of the recordings made at Montreux on the shore of Lake Geneva, the star trumpeter fought a 'battle' with the upcoming star Jon Faddis, who was at least technically already his equal. Those were years in which the quirky master, who had initiated a be-bop-fashion trend with his small beard and beret in his early years, aimed at new goals and strategies. The quartet performing at Onkel Pö was exemplary for this new orientation. Dizzy was on tour with a rather small team: the solos were divided between him and the only 22-year-old guitarist Rodney Jones; the equally youthful Ben Brown was the man on the electric bass. However, when it came to drummer Mickey Roker, Dizzy relied on his own, the bebop-tradition. In the second part of the Pö-concert Dizzy invited the saxophonist Leo Wright onto the stage. . . . [Wright] was -- together with Phil Woods -- one of Charlie Parker's legitimate heirs and since 1959 Dizzy's permanent quintet-partner for two years..." --Michael Laages

The audience can always be sensed (and heard) on the recordings made at Pö; and when a perfect entertainer such as Johnny Watson, born 1935 in Houston, Texas, occupied the stage, the Hamburg audience did play along accordingly, very much not highly reserved... probably the loud enthusiasm of one of the most important characters of Onkel Pö is clearly audible on the recording of the concert performed in early December 1976. . . . Johnny 'Guitar' Watson passed away on 17 May 1996 in Yokohama, Japan. He died in a way every truly passionate musician might hope for: he suffered from a lethal cardiac arrest 'live in concert' and "on stage". Twenty years earlier, on the evening documented on the current recording of the Watsonian Institute, Onkel Pö vibrated and pulsated; not only because of the powerful acoustics of the location but also thanks to the vibrant performance Watson managed to create anew for every show together with his well-arranged 'working band', strong even in the brass section. The concert took place shortly after the release of Watson's album Ain't That A Bitch (1976), which earned him a top spot among the performers of the then still relatively recent and stout funk-sound movement; and of course, Watson did perform tracks from that album in Hamburg. However, you can feel that he was not only performing his 'I am here to present my new album'-routine; Watson was quite aware that he was playing in front of a well-informed and demanding audience. A public, that wanted to be conquered and convinced. Whoever was willing to adhere to these rules had a good chance to succeed at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall." --Michael Laages

COLLINS & THE ICEBREAKERS, ALBERT At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1980 2CD
Recorded December 1st, 1980 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany. Personnel: Albert Collins - guitar, vocals; A. C. Reed - tenor sax, vocals; Jackson Marvin - guitar; Johnny B. Gayden - bass; Casey Jones - drums, vocals."... Already the music made by the young Collins, born 1932 in Leona/Texas, was praised to be especially 'cool'; and of course, when he performed on the tiny stage of Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall on Eppendorfer Lehmweg in Hamburg, he was joined by his band called The Icebreakers. Naturally, on this winter evening no cold barrier needed to be overcome, certainly not in the overcrowded Pö, where most probably (as so often) tropical temperatures will have prevailed. . . . His name adorned the star line-up at the Montreux Jazz Festival and at the Paleo-Festival in Nyon, just around the corner on Lake Geneva. It was also in Nyon that his terminal illness first broke out. The recording from Onkel Pö really covers the entire concert; including the 20-minutes long opening of the Icebreakers, led by saxophonist A.C. Reed and percussionist Casey Jones (both of them also sing) -- only as of 'Listen here' is Albert Collins master of the house, scat-singing and playing the guitar in parallel runs. At the very end he performs his popular circus act, the instrument "talking' with two different voices... The first part of the concert ends after about one hour and the second part starts again with four intro-pieces, especially to feature saxophonist A.C. Reed and again featuring, as at the very beginning of the evening, classics such as 'Stand By Me', before Mister Collins himself takes over once more (with 'Mustang Sally'). By the way, always at the moment of the first sounds from Collins, unexpected shifts of harmony occur -- maybe the master on the 'Telecaster' has tuned it 'open' with the capo tasto again: this was one of his trademarks at the onset of his career. A very independent and original blues-master can be experienced once more on this recording. The exceptionally atmospheric Onkel Pö with its passionate Hamburg audience turns the encounter, even after three decades, into a true event -- into \'showtime'..." --Michael Laages

JONES JAZZ MACHINE, ELVIN At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1981 2CD
Recorded September 22nd, 1981 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany. Personnel: Elvin Jones - drums; Carter Jefferson - saxophone; Dwayne Armstrong - saxophone; Fumio Karashima - piano; Marvin Horne - guitar; Andy McCloud - bass."... Elvin Ray Jones was born in Pontiac in 1927 as the youngest of ten children and brother of pianist Hank and trumpeter Thad Jones. In 1981 his formative years were long gone -- about one and a half decades earlier the percussionist had left the quartet of charismatic saxophonist John Coltrane, after having been part of it for five years; Elvin Jones was involved in milestone-productions such as A Love Supreme (1965). Already during and especially after his time with Coltrane, the percussionist enriched various modern jazz ensembles; for instance, he attended the German jazz festival at Frankfurt in 1978 as a member of the European-American formation Concert Jazz Band of the Swiss pianist, arranger and composer George Gruntz. Elvin Jones called his own ensemble Jazz Machine; the name was not due to a somewhat mechanical and cold sound of the drums -- on the contrary. The orchestration of this 'machine' was rather unconventional -- Jones had invited two tenor-saxophonists, Carter Jefferson (who passed away already in the mid-90s) and Dwayne Armstrong; also in this way he cemented the staggering sound of the group. Opposite of the bugles performed, surprisingly enough, the guitarist Marvin Horne; and with the Japanese pianist Fumio Karashima the Jones-'Machine' had at its command a particularly non-mechanical melodist, especially when it concerned the ballads; in this case 'In A Sentimental Mood' and 'My One And Only Love'. Karashima also added a noteworthy dosage of far-east melodics and harmony to the concert. Together with Karashima and the well-tried bassist Andy McCloud, Elvin Jones had recorded a trio-LP just previously to the European tour documented here. The material for the recording from Onkel Pö feeds on concise themes and motives from all established sources of the hard bop era; often and readily the blues elements prevail. Right in the middle of it all Elvin Jones proves his mastery again and again -- even after more than three decades (and long after Elvin Jones passing away in 2004) his performance remains an object-lesson, or better: an audio-lesson for everybody, who is looking for orientation and guidance through the history of the emancipation of the drums in jazz; until today." --Michael Laages

HUBBARD QUINTET, FREDDIE At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 CD
Recorded October 30, 1979 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Freddie Hubbard - trumpet, flugelhorn; Hadley Caliman - saxophone, flute; Billy Childs - piano; Larry Klein - bass; Carl Burnett - drums."When Freddie Hubbard came to Hamburg to get on the tiny stage of Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, he was right at the centre of the world of jazz, probably more than ever before or after in his career -- together with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams the trumpet player had set-up the quintet 'V.S.O.P.' three years earlier; as the other four people of the group had previously formed the legendary second quintet of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard could be considered to be his direct successor. . . . The concert in Hamburg with his own quintet was exemplary for the artistic standard Hubbard set in those days almost four decades ago. Together with the 'V.S.O.P.'-legend, this was basically the prologue to the evening at Onkel Pö; Furthermore, at that time the album The Love Connection (1979) had just been released and its title song also starts off the live recording made by the NDR broadcasting station on location at Lehmweg in Hamburg-Eppendorf. Hubbard's band adopted some aspects of Blakey's 'Messengers'-strategy: appearing on stage together with the young up-and-coming saxophonist Hadley Caliman (who sometimes also played the flute), the then 23-year-old bassist Larry Klein -- who would later develop into a surprisingly versatile artist [...] and with the drummer Carl Burnett. Above all, the pianist Billy Childs performed brilliantly that evening at Onkel Pö -- he was only 22 years old. Apropos, also the exceptional singer Leon Thomas was on stage in Hamburg that day. . . . Freddie Hubbard's career suffered a severe setback in 1993; or to be more precise: not a setback but a split with dramatic consequences. His lips could not cope with the high pressure of playing the trumpet any longer. It took Hubbard several years to heal and regenerate (his lips as well as himself!). These were very difficult times for him. Basically, he had to completely reinvent himself as a musician -- and he started (as he sometimes had already done in the past) to perform on the softer, more gentle sounding flugelhorn, an instrument which is less physically demanding on the lips." --Michael Laages

SHAW QUINTET, WOODY At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1982 CD
Recorded January 13, 1982 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Woody Shaw - trumpet. flugelhorn; Steve Turre - trombone; Mulgrew Miller - piano; Stafford James - bass; Tony Reedus - drums. Double-LP version includes bonus track "Diane"."It is a positive sensation and pure joy to be reminded of an extraordinary and very special musician by this current release -- as Woody Shaw disappeared from the personal jazz-universe of way too many people after his early and tragic death in May 1989. Unjustly of course -- Shaw represents a position in the recent history of the jazz trumpet, which hardly ever before nor after was painted so clearly, so precisely and with so much energy: as the quivering and delicate virtuosity of a coeval, who has absorbed virtually all earlier traditions -- modernity and awareness for history as the spirit of jazz. Furthermore, Woody Shaw was at the zenith of his personal development as an artist at the time of the performance at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall on 13 January 1982; just imagine what he might have achieved had he lived longer than for just seven more years... He was accompanied by a sensational group of musicians. All of them subsequently made news as artists in their own right: the drummer Tony Reedus as well as the bassist Stafford James, the pianist Mulgrew Miller and especially the young trombonist Steve Turre, who alongside Lester Bowie became the new young voice of the jazz-trombone shortly afterwards and who gave orientation to a whole generation. Band leader Woody might have guessed it, when he (unlike many other band leaders in this CD series Live aus dem Onkel Pö) introduced the members of his band right after the opening song: modest, friendly and appealing as always. Woody Shaw was a true master of his trade; People like him are missed in this business, which is usually characterised by hubris, not the spirit of humanity. . . . His music -- as documented here in this recording of a very intensive concert, as they could be experienced at Onkel Pö, besides the passion-driven, delirious performances by entertainers such as Dizzy Gillespie or blues-fireworks by the likes of Albert Collins -- is a huge and important heritage of contemporary jazz. GRIFFIN-EDDIE "LOCKJAW" DAVIS QUINTET, JOHNNY At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1975 2CD
Recorded August 8, 1975 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Johnny Griffin - saxophone; Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - saxophone; Tete Montoliu - piano; Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen - bass; Art Taylor - drums."... One of the most fascinating chapters in jazz history has been written by the 'Americans in Europe' -- masters of jazz from the homeland of this genre of music, who for different reasons did not feel at ease in their fatherland, the USA; most of the time there were just not enough jobs and even less appreciation for their work. The latent racism also played a role and some wanted to protest against the hubris of their home country, which wanted to police the world and again and again stumbled into armed conflicts. Furthermore, already in the 50s some big bands disintegrated while being on tour in the 'Old World' -- and Paris, London, Stockholm or Copenhagen -- in some rarer cases also Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt -- became a new home for high-profile jazz stars. The first recording under his own name was released in 1956 and four years later he was together with 'Lockjaw'-Davis in a rather successful and popular band. In this respect the concert in Hamburg fifteen years later was also a sort of revival. When Davis starts off the second part of the NDR-recording with the master-standard 'I Can't Started', followed by 'Stompin' At The Savoy' with Griffin and Davis alternating, then it becomes clear what these two musicians appreciated in each other: the partnership in the creative rivalry and cooperation of their voices. Pleasantly and with a lot of air Davis filled the room with sound, crisp and robust was Griffin's reaction. Together they were almost unbeatable. Furthermore, the Pö-concert was a typical Griffin-evening. 'Little Giant' (as the community called him) was never really interested in a clear structure -- the pure energy of exuberant storytelling was his element. With one small motive (e.g. 'Funky Fluke' towards the finale) he could easily fill one side of an LP; he always had something more to tell. This was in a way the motto of these seemingly never-ending story: always give more, always find more." --Michael Laages

PHILLIPS, ESTHER At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 2CD
Recorded November 11, 1978 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Esther Phillips - vocals; Henry Cain - piano; Wes Blackman - guitar; Bill Upchurch - bass; James Levi - drums."The voice of this singer seemed to originate in another world. Perhaps it was at home in some wild jungle ... Esther Phillips went stalking in it with her recorder and collected sounds. Every one of them she also tried out herself -- the growling and purring of large and small wildcats, the buzzing and chirping and screeching of numerous birds high up in the treetops, the dark and pulsating breath of a predatory animal behind the next turn of the road. However, this jungle was in fact a metropolis, New York for example -- and therefore this spectacularly exceptional singer introduced herself as a 'native New Yorker' on 11 November 1978 at a magical concert at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall in Hamburg, the legendary hot spot, which once again turned into a seething cauldron of emotions. Back in those days this was almost always the case, when the dense concert schedule invoked the abysses and primal grounds of blues . . . She was rediscovered in the disco-sound era: with 'What A Difference A Day Makes', a song which had previously been an inherent part of the repertoire of Dinah Washington, an artist much admired by Esther. Of course, the song was also performed in Hamburg at Onkel Pö, just before the end of the concert. The time to look back and recall had by then already started long ago -- Esther Phillips once again returned to the world of soul, blues and pop. It was certainly obvious to a jazz audience how intensively everything was connected and entwined in the power of this voice, to which nothing seemed impossible. Esther Phillips had survived in the jungle of the metropolis. The concert at Onkel Pö, which was recorded by NDR and featured powerful accompanists and a highly enthusiastic audience proved, that she was still able to evocate the ghosts. Once again she managed to completely enchant her audience that evening in Hamburg in November of 1978. Some weeks later Esther Phillips turned 43. However, time was running out for her -- she did not make it to 50. She passed away on 7 August 1984." --Michael Laages

GILLESPIE QUARTET, DIZZY At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 3LP
Triple LP version.

With one small motive (e.g. 'Funky Fluke' towards the finale) he could easily fill one side of an LP; he always had something more to tell. This was in a way the motto of these seemingly never-ending story: always give more, always find more." --Michael Laages

PHILLIPS, ESTHER At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl.

VA Spiritual Jazz 8: Japan Parts One & Two 2CD
Jazzman Record's latest examination of esoteric, modal, and progressive jazz of the 20th century has taken them to Japan. The liberating force of jazz has been created and felt all around the world, but few nations on earth embraced the jazz message with the passion and intensity of Japan. From the dawn of the jazz age to the present day, Japanese audiences have been renowned tastemakers, enthusiasts, and champions of the music -- in the 1980s, Japan was the biggest per capita market in the world for jazz records, and it has even been said that Japanese jazz fans kept the jazz record industry alive through the lean years of the 1970s, when the music fell from commercial favor in the land of its birth. But while the jazz aficionados of Japan are celebrated as sophisticated fans and consumers of the music, comparatively little is known outside Japan of the remarkable and abundant music produced by generations of Japanese jazz musicians. Numerous Japanese jazzers have found enormous success on the international stage -- Toshiko Akiyoshi, Sadao Watanabe, Teramasu Hino, and many others are household names among jazz listeners all over the world, and with good reason. But if such global figures are put aside, the stunning heritage of Japanese jazz remains poorly understood outside Japan. As a result, the work of many celebrated Japanese jazzmen has remained largely unknown to international audiences, and the extraordinary scope and depth of Japanese jazz has not been widely recognized. Compiled for the Spiritual Jazz series in collaboration with the celebrated collector and DJ Yusuke Ogawa (Deep Jazz Reality, Tokyo), this set aims to correct that omission by uncovering the uniquely deep sound of esoteric, modal and progressive jazz from Japan -- music of the heart, soul, and Japanese spirit.Part One features: Mitsuaki Kanno, Tadao Hayashi, Minoru Muraoka, Takeo Moriyama, Koichi Matsukaze, Sadao Watanabe & Charlie Mariano, Shungo Sawada, New Direction For The Arts. Part Two features: Four Units, Tohru Aizawa, Keitaro Miho, Tee & Company, Takeo Moriyama, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Yoshio Ikeda.

NATIONAL JAZZ TRIO OF SCOTLAND, THE Standards Vol. IV LP
LP version. Includes download code. On their latest album, Standards Vol. IV, the National Jazz Trio Of Scotland continue their engagement with classic and outsider pop traditions, subtly building on their characteristic blend of beguiling melodies and spare arrangements. There is even, dare we say it, a hint of jazz. Oblique visions of jazz aside, the album's most striking development is its focus on a single lead vocalist in Kate Sudgen, who has an understated approach with a real emotional pull. This is the first in a proposed series of albums to feature one singer from the NJTOS, with Gerard Black and Aby Vulliamy to follow. In 2012, Wells won the inaugural Scottish Album Of The Year award for Everything's Getting Older (2011), a collaboration with Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat. In 2011 he released Lemondale, recorded with Japan-based musicians, including Jim O'Rourke and Saya of Tenniscoats. Four years later, he assembled a stellar cast of musicians including Annette Peacock and Yo La Tengo for Nursery Rhymes, an exploration of the darker side of children's songs. Wells's penchant for détournement and bittersweet irony crops up throughout Standards Vol. IV. Take "Tinnitus Lullaby", where Sudgen softly sings over the melancholy twinkling of a music box like synth. "Anticipated Sentence" makes a wry reference to the Sinatra standard "I've Got The World On A String", a song Wells dislikes intensely. In Wells's song. Kohler's cheerful refrain of "What a world, what a life!" is twisted into something altogether darker, with the string around the protagonist's finger becoming a noose around their neck. "Move" is a vivid portrait of depression, where the protagonist spends all day in bed, listening to the sounds of helicopters buzzing overhead. Yet Wells animates the song with bossa nova guitar and clave rhythms, creating an effect that is, depending how you read it, ironic or uplifting. In addition to the ten Wells originals and a new version of the Aidan Moffat collaboration "Far From You", Standards Vol. IV features a cover of Richard Youngs's "Summer's Edge" from the latter's 2005 masterpiece Summer Wanderer. Wells has known Youngs since the 1990s, when they worked together with Future Pilot AKA. The National Jazz Trio's version taps into the uncanny pastoralism of the original, with Sudgen's clear reading of the melody set against Wells's glistening keyboard samples. Standards Vol. IV is an album characterized by its gorgeous blend of sophistication and vulnerability.

CAMPBELL, CORNELL Boxing CD
Kingston Sounds present a reissue of Cornell Campbell's Boxing, originally released in 1982. What we have here is one of Cornell Campbell's great dancehall, early '80s set of songs. Dancehall was when the beat slowed down to that classic one-drop style that suited his voice so well. The album includes the title "Boxing" which was a massive hit for Cornell on its initial release in 1982. It also includes a dancehall reworking of "Queen Of The Minstrel" and a fantastic dancehall cut to Bob Marley's "Natty Dread". This was a new chapter in reggae's sound that saw the rhythm slowed down and seemed to add even more emphasis to the songs meanings. A reissue of Cornell's early '80s Boxing set is complete here. CD version includes four bonus tracks, a few more Cornell classics from the same period. Be sure to play it in full -- Cornell Campbell at his finest.

BRAINTICKET Psychonaut LP+CD
2018 repress. Lilith present a reissue of Brainticket's Psychonaut, originally released in 1972. Psychonaut, by the Swiss-based Brainticket, is early seventies space rock at its finest. While the band's debut album, 1971's Cottonwoodhill (LR 313LP), was a heavily acid-laden affair dominated by droning organ, disturbing vocals, and a collection of cacophonic sound effects (causing it to carry a warning label and be banned in several countries), for their second effort, band-founder Joël Vandroogenbroeck brought in a completely new line-up and changed the band's sound dramatically. While Psychonaut still takes listeners into the realm of altered consciousness -- making heavy use of a droning Hammond, sitar, tablas, etc. -- this time the vocals are more melodic and the music itself is more song-oriented. This is by far Brainticket's most accessible album and perhaps their most timeless. Fully remastered from the original master tapes. Includes CD.

BRAINTICKET Cottonwoodhill LP+CD
2018 repress. Lilith present a reissue of Brainticket's Cottonwoodhill, originally released in 1971. Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most far-out albums of all time was made by this Swiss band -- no small feat, given the competition! Brainticket's 1971 debut, Cottonwoodhill, begins normally enough with two fine psychedelic/krautrock-influenced tracks, but the remainder of the album plays like an acid trip with a soundtrack, dominated by Joël Vandroogenbroeck's endless droning organ, a variety of musique concrète-type sound effects, and vocalist Dawn Muir's trippy vocals. The album, banned in several countries, even came with this self-imposed warning: "After Listening to this Record, your friends may not know you anymore. Only listen to this once a day, or your brain might be destroyed!" Gatefold sleeve; Includes CD.

DUNGEN & WOODS Myths 003 12"
"With 2018's Marfa Myths festival slated to take place in the idyllic namesake backdrop of far West Texas, Mexican Summer once more reveals the fruits of the previous festival's recording residency. For the third Marfa Myths release, we're proud to present seven all-new songs written and recorded by Stockholm's psychedelic masters Dungen and adventurous Brooklyn indie-folk pioneers Woods. As the Marfa Myths record series progresses, the spirit of the collaborations between the artists chosen -- one a member of the Mexican Summer family, the other for which we share deep admiration -- deepens as well. In the case of Dungen and Woods, the two bands were tourmates in the summer of 2009, traversing America and bonding with one another in the process. The familiarity with one another's music and personalities was already well in place, but the eight years that passed between the tour and the making of this record reveal that nothing was lost in the interim. That this is the most music assembled for a Marfa Myths release to date is telling of a rare and special connection between Dungen and Woods, reignited by the circumstances of the occasion. Dungen's Gustav Ejstes and Reine Fiske, and Woods' Jeremy Earl and Jarvis Taveniere were provided the freedom to acclimate themselves to the unique frequencies of the Marfa experience without distraction. Marfa Myths 003 showcases a seamless merging of two bands following the same track to different locations throughout their career, as if they'd been playing together for decades, an exhilarating and buoyant example of how shared experiences can foster truly wonderful music."

JENSEN, CLARICE For This From That Will Be Filled LP
LP version. Metallic color artwork. Includes eight-page 12x12" booklet and download code; Edition of 500. For this from that will be filled is the debut album by Clarice Jensen, artistic director of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME). The album explores the variable differences between acoustic and electronic sound as well as depiction of the simulated and the unconscious. It was originally conceived as a collaboration between Jensen and the artist Jonathan Turner as an audio-visual work, but is here presented in it's pure audible form. Building on a long and romantic tradition of solo cello repertoire, Jensen expands and confuses the familiar sound of the cello through the use of effects pedals, multi-tracking, and tape loops recorded at variable speeds, presented in works she has written for herself as well as a piece she conceived together with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. Also featured is Michael Harrison's "Cello Constellations" for multi-tracked cello and sine tones, written for Jensen, which meditates on long, sustaining tones. With For This From That Will Be Filled, Jensen has made an incredibly strong first album that feels like a surreal and futuristic journey through an alternate timeline.

Arriving like the mysterious fully formed monoliths in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is Hand That Heals/Hand That Bites Warsaw, Poland-based artist Aleksandra Grünholz aka We Will Fail. Despite the fact this isn't her debut (that was 2014's Verstorung (MONO 074CD)), this double-barreled shotgun of an album rings with the boldest sense of arrival one could possibly imagine. With a unique sound that is neither electronic, noise, nor experimental but a unique off-cut of the three assembled into a style all her own, Grünholz's sound runs parallel to artists like Scott Walker, Autechre, Pharmakon, Daphne Oram, Pan Sonic, Grouper, Laurel Halo, Demdike Stare, Vessel, and beyond. Both dark and anxious, the seven Hand That Bites tracks are deeply rhythmic, pulsing, energetic, and brimming with the intensity of an artist who has clearly arrived at an important place. As Grünholz notes, "This part is ruder, more brutal, stronger, but at the same time more basic. The pulse, the harshness and the anxiety were really important to me. I know that some sounds are even dull. I left some parts dirty, raw. I wanted to show the strength that can seduce and mesmerize at the same time." The rhythms here have some associations with techno and club music, but for the artist this is music for listening rather than dancing. Like the work of Emptyset and other sonic explorers, techno elements embedded are merely part of the construction -- a sound reaching beyond any kind of norm. The companion eight tracks, an alternative version of the same story according to Grünholz, make up the Hand That Heals segment of the album. These tracks are lighter in touch, focused on atmosphere and experiments yet equally compelling and unique.

VA Interferencias Vol. 1: Spanish Synth Wave 1980-1989 2LP
Double LP version. At the dawn of synth pop, an army of machines was ready to inflict a strange defeat on rock. Traditional music from that era could be set ablaze thanks to the new artistic channels that the democratic transition in Spain had forged. Synth pop settled in the urban centers of major cities across the Iberian Peninsula; a feverish start to one of the few labels that can be claimed as genuinely Spanish: tecno pop. An Iberian version of the minimal synth sound that was all the rage in the late '70s and early '80s, a style which encompassed a range of subgenres, some incredibly dark, minimalist, and almost cybernetic. Initially, there was total mimesis, and key references came from Europe, Japan, and the United States. Records by Cabaret Voltaire, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Residents, or Devo were cherished. But film, poetry, and fashion were also strong influences clearly reflected in the songs of the emerging groups. Many swam the demo tape oceans, without releasing a single record, victims of the record companies' ignorance, although shortly after this rich seam would be exploited to the extent that bands that had only played a couple of times were signed up. This collection seeks to redress the lack of media impact that some of these groups received. These groups released records of the same standard as some foreign releases, even though they lacked technical media and had less musical knowledge. Boundless enthusiasm and energy eventually ushered in the new wave, charged with synthetic rhythms, where guitars took second place to a whole range of synthesizers and drum machines. Many projects scraped by and signed to small labels or set up their own label. Interferencias offers the opportunity to discover tracks that had little impact when they were first released and were then overlooked and even forgotten by most people. The range on this collection is impressive and the songs are evocative and sincere offerings, grounded by kilos of coherence and brimming with infectious melodies and catchy, arithmetic rhythms. Features Todotodo, Oviformia Sci, Última Emoción, WAQ,Justine, Séptimo Sello, Líneas Aéreas, MD, Lavabos Iturriaga, Vocoder, Metal Y Ca, La Mode, Aviador Dro, Kalashnikov, Tomates Eléctricos, Metropakt, El Humano Mecano, Diseño Corbusier, Los Iniciados, and Bola/Banda Electrónica. DRUMS OFF CHAOS Centre 12"
Six-track mini-album from Drums Off Chaos, a project centered around Jaki Liebezeit All tracks on their second EP revolve around a vacant space in the middle. A center that is filled with nothing. The focus is on abstract, grooving drum music. Rhythms are reduced to their elementary nucleus to such an extent that they can be perceived as clearly singular but also as universal. And something emerges that follows universal laws such as gravity, ergonomics and acoustics. The album centers on rhythms that are based on simple numerical relationships allowing their richness to unfurl from within.

BOULANGER & MAAM-LI MERATI, LEONORE La Maison d'Amour CD
Léonore Boulanger and Maam-Li Merati met each other in Paris in 2011 at a concert of Azerbaijani master-musician Alim Qasimov and his daughter Ferghana Qasimova. Maam-Li Merati is an Iranian musician that was born in Kermanshah, near the Iraqi border. In addition to having a doctorate in Musicology, he has worked with artists such as Iranian singer Shahram Nazeri and French novelist Luis Bunuel's screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (for a project devoted to 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi). Shortly after their meeting, Maam-Li Merati started to teach the art of Persian classical music to Léonore Boulanger, a young French musician that released three albums on the multi-faceted label Le Saule. During the spring of 2015, they recorded some first lyrical odes, some dastg?hs for two voices, and traditional string instruments that would later become the "Dastgah-e Nava", "Dastgah-e Shur" "Avaz-e Abu Ata", and "Avaz-e Bayat-e Tork" portions of La Maison d'Amour. Later, Matthieu Ferrandez, church organist and researcher in electronic music, joined the "Dastgah-e Mahur", "Avaz-e Bayat-e Esfahan", and "Dastgah-e Homayun" pieces, weaving a cosmic lace with the sighs of harmonium and acoustic organs"You, you traded me for nothing Me, I still choose that I wouldn't trade a single hair yours for the entire world" --Saadi Shirazi (13th century).

WANKELMUT Wankelmoods Vol. 3 CD
Following the much-loved second volume (POESIE 014CD, 2014), Wankelmut is back with the third edition of his Wankelmoods compilation series. It is a fine window into his unique musical mind which packs lots of moods and grooves into its standout 24 tracks. This self-proclaimed "minimal electronica imp with a knack for rock remixes" hails from Berlin. He's played all over Europe, clocked up a few chart hits such as "My Head Is A Jungle", and now this latest mix finds him in fine form. It includes two of his own recent hits released on Modernsoul/Fine, in the form "I Keep Calling" (Club Mix) with Björn Dixgård -- the lead singer of the Mando Diao -- and "Almost Mine", featuring Charlotte OC and remixed by Mat.Joe, both of which are standouts in the compilation. The mix kicks off with the emotive but driving deep house of Wayward's "Orissa", which is awash with celestial synths and heavenly vocals. Then the drums pick up with cuts from Worthy, a remix from Defected's star man Franky Rizardo, and one from Return Of The Jaded which is all clipped drums and silvery percussion. UK talent Huxley then appears remixing Santé's track featuring Stereo MC's and brings big drums, warm bass, and twisted vocals that settle you into a heads-down groove. Esteemed artists like Gerd Janson and Shan, Tube & Berger, and Wankelmut himself offer twists and turns through pounding house, piano-laced jams, and big vocal anthems. An infectious and loopy brand of tech house defines the absorbing mid-section, as Wankelmut continues to serve up smooth, coherent mixes that always bring something new with each new addition but never disrupt the overall flow of the mix. Touchstones of the scene like Nick Curly, Hot Since 82, and Kölsch keep you on your toes, before the final part of the mix takes thing back down to moody territory that is perfect for the late-night hours with tracks from the likes of Sasha and Djuma Soundsystem and Westerby. This is an ambitious mix that manages to maintain energy levels while proving perfectly unpredictable as it unfolds. Also features Whitesquare, Nils Hoffmann, Forrest, Björn Dixgard, Illyus, Barrientos, Emanuel Satie, George Vala, Kato Change, Riot Stereo, SURAJ, Floyd Lavine, Pablo Fierro, Zoo Brazil, Mendo, Animal Trainer, Joe Goddard, Solee, Martin Landsky, Reboot, Andre Lodemann, Adriatique, BehrEllips, Crazy White Boy, Poliça, and Hammer.

SPACE AFRIKA Somewhere Decent To Live LP
Ambient duo Space Afrika offer a bird's-eye view of the city center at night with Somewhere Decent To Live; their keenly anticipated first album on Sferic -- the Manchester-based label they run in conjunction with Will Boyd. Taking gaseous form as a series of dark blue hues and electromagnetic sub-bass impulses, the vibe inside is delectably elusive. Unlike their previous transmissions on Where To Now? and Köln's LL.M., the pair's dancefloor urges are dissolved in favor of suggestively mutable ambient frameworks this time, leaving the kicks in the club whilst they appear to float overhead like the dead kid embarking his Bardo in Gaspar Noé's Enter The Void (2010). Unshackled from dancefloor needs, but still inspired and feeding off its spirit and romance, the pair respectfully acknowledge the undercurrents of jungle, dubstep, ambient techno, and deep house which feed into their home city's late-night economy, dowsing their tributaries back to dub and rendering the findings in a quiet, modestly lush ambient haze with a flawlessly anesthetizing effect. In firm but gentle style they feel out eight interlinked headspaces, drifting like spectral flaneurs from the Diversions-like opener "uwëm/creation" to intercept telepathic thoughts from Teutonic friends in the percolated subs and drizzly ambient clag of "sd/tl", before arriving at the most arresting moment in their catalog thus far with the masterfully widescreen yet immersive "bly" and its sublimely smeared timbral thizz. The second half of the record subsequently describes a more inward journey from wistful loops in "u+00B1" to the sylvan two-step of "gwabh" and "curve", featuring Echium, ultimately culminating in the echo chamber melt of "dred". RIYL: Jan Jelinek, Huerco S, Detroit Escalator Company, The Connection Machine. Master and lacquer cut by Pole at Scape Mastering.

SOUTH CENTRAL CARTEL South Central Cartel CD
Snow Dog Records present a reissue of South Central Cartel's self-titled debut album, originally released in 1991. Los Angeles's South Central Cartel were pioneers in the West Coast gangsta rap genre, in the same league as Dr. Dre, NWA, Eazy E, Ice Cube, Compton's Most Wanted, Above the Law, Da Lench Mob, Mac Dre, and Kurupt. South Central Cartel (S.C.C.) was one of the first West Coast groups to gain national popularity in the immediate wake of groundbreaking and controversial releases by NWA and Eazy-E, and they're still etched in hip hop's collective memory for pushing the envelope with their unapologetic embrace of gang affiliation, automatic weapons, violent crime, and prison and car culture. South Central Madness is their debut album, originally released on Pump/Quality Records, with subsequent albums released on Def Jam West in a deal between their G.W.K. (Gangsters Wit Knowledge) imprint and the West Coast division of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons's label. Over a now-classic bed of sample sources (Delfonics, The Temptations, Barry White, Funkadelic, more), with lyrical sample drops of their hip-hop contemporaries (MC Breed, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, NWA, Geto Boys, Big Daddy Kane), lyricists Havoc, Havik, Prodeje, and Young Prodeje along with singer L.V. (later featured on Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise") deliver a solid bridge from hip-hop's established East Coast chart-dominating status quo toward the West Coast-centric "G-Funk era", Crips vs. Bloods subtexts and the definition of what it meant to be hard. Videos for the singles U Gotta Deal Wit Dis (Gangsta Luv)/Ya Getz Clowned (1991) and Papa Was A Rolling Stone (1992) feature up-tempo Havoc and Prodeje in black baseball caps, shades, and curls that Eazy-E should have trademarked, riding and further extending the ominous Compton MC legacy. "Ya Getz Clowned" actually samples MC Breed's "Ain't No Future In Yo' Frontin'", released just months before, tightening a food chain of club/radio DJ/producer sample/remix culture that was evolving fast in 1991. An interesting and maybe still unresolved footnote is that an unrelated up-and-coming duo from Queensbridge named Mobb Deep with members Havoc and Prodigy who would release their debut Juvenile Hell in 1993.

BATTRE LYSS Till Den Strang Som Brast An Att Aldrig Spanna En Bage CD
Sommor Records present the first ever reissue of Bättre Lyss's Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna En Båge, originally released in 1975. Rare Swedish psychedelic hard and progressive rock with powerful guitar/organ and great melodic vocals, featuring ex-Life member Anders Nordh on guitar. The Bättre Lyss project was born during 1973-74, when mutual friends Rolf Hammarlund (vocals, bass) and Christer Palmquist (vocals, acoustic guitars, piano) started to write songs sung in English. Soon after, the lyrics were changed to Swedish and another friend, drummer, and songwritter Rolf Johansson joined in. That's when they decided to record an album. Helped by some talented friends, including three electric guitar players (among them Anders Nordh of Life fame) and a flute/sax player plus an organist, they registered Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna En Båge on a two-track machine at a state-of-the art studio. The result was stunning and was released as a private pressing in 1975. File next to: November, Life, Saga, Bazar, Silberbart. Master tape sound.

SKODVIN & RAUELSSON, ERIK K A Score for Darling LP
A Score for Darling is both the soundtrack for the Danish film Darling (2017) as well as a collection of outtakes from it. Raúl Pastor Medall (Rauelsson) and Erik K Skodvin (Svarte Greiner and half of Deaf Center) were paired together to work on the accompanying music after the director, Birgitte Stærmose wanted to try a new direction. Both together and individually they have created a highly affecting collection of pieces to a film that is not afraid of pushing the emotional content to the max, centered around the story of a dancer. This is also the first time either of them have made a full-length soundtrack, making it their debut on the big screen. The music and instrumentation heard on the album is brimming with dynamics and diversity, featuring violin by Christoph Berg, cello by Anne Müller as well as a mass of other sounds like church organs, synths, guitar amp violation, electro-acoustic sounds, piano, and more, all layered together into 15 beautiful and devastating fragments of mood. The final piece of the album "Breathe" -- featuring Otto A Totland on piano and Katinka Fogh Vindelev (We Like We) on voice -- can be seen as their own lamenting end title to a longer period of work with this album, finally finished. DRUMM, KEVIN Inexplicable Hours 2LP+CD
Double LP version. Six-panel, double gatefold sleeve; Includes CD. Inexplicable Hours is the sequel of the successful six-CD boxset Elapsed Time, also released by Sonoris in 2017 (SNS 013CD). The material on the first LP of Inexplicable Hours documents a new direction in his music, with some of his last electroacoustic experimentations with audio generators, field recordings, and various electronic devices. The material on the second LP explores the same ambient/drone territories as the boxset, but there is less static and it is more complex than it appears on the first listen. And as always with recent Kevin Drumm's music there's a sense of majesty, of mystery and a melancholic beauty that is uniquely his own. Some words about the boxset are also appropriate for this record: "Despite Drumm's noisy reputation, his music can be overwhelmingly sensual even at its loudest, providing a form of minimalism replete with a delicate, melancholic motion. How wildly divergent emotions rise, hover, and fall using so little is a mystery that only Kevin Drumm can provide." Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi. CD version comes in cardboard cover.Acclaim for Elapsed Time (2017):"The vast array of styles and works to be had here makes it an engaging challenge, one that can differ widely from disc to disc, but never lacks the cohesion and touch of a master craftsman and composer working at the top of his game." --Brainwashed"These pieces, despite their length, are like perfect miniatures, timeless puzzles that you try and unravel through close listening. And their sense of place, of home, of sanctuary, feels more important than ever right now." --The Wire

DHARMA QUINTET Mr Robinson LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Dharma Quintet's Mr Robinson, originally released in 1970. In an interview with Jazz Magazine in the early 1970s, Dharma, as a collective voice, outlined their method: "we try to reach, within free jazz, the same sort of rhythmic cohesion as in bop, a cohesion based not exactly on tempo, but something which feels like tempo. A kind of underlying pulse." Evidence of these ideas can be heard immediately on listening to Mr Robinson, the first album by the Dharma Quintet, for whom community living seemed obvious, in order to add to the aforementioned cohesion. Through this, the group members played together on a daily basis, trying out things which were worked on day in, day out. They also listened to a lot of records, with of course a preference for free jazz, but not forgetting Miles Davis in his electric period, notably for the keyboards of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. To which should be added esthetical-political concerns based on a refusal of hierarchy, and a desire to escape from a restrictive academic approach... It was within this framework that Jef Sicard and Gérard Coppéré (saxophones, flute, bass clarinet), Patricio Villarroel (electric and acoustic piano), Michel Gladieux (bass), and Jacques Mahieux (drums) formed the first version of a collective united by structured intentions. The result is a beneficial cohesion, and moments of great beauty born of a collective excitement and giving rise to ambiances which seemed almost possessed. The use of modes could seem to link Mr Robinson to the spiritual jazz of the past but that is without taking into account the fact that the benevolent spirit of Eric Dolphy seems to watch over this album. In France, a similar desire for cohesion could be found in the Cohelmec Ensemble, who had parallel preoccupations, to the point where their bassist, François Méchali, ended up by joining Dharma. As a quintet, with however some personnel changes, Dharma recorded three albums (one as a trio, under the name of Dharma Trio), which are all of fundamental importance (Dharma also accompanied the songs of Jean-Marie Vivier and Colette Magny). Individually, the members would record with musicians passing through (notably Anthony Ortega, Dave Burrell) and participated in other key groups including Machi Oul and Full Moon Ensemble. DHARMA TRIO Snoopy's Time LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Dharma Trio's Snoopy's Time, originally released in 1970. Dharma as they were simply known, at the time when they were still playing, englobed all the incarnations of the group, trio, quartet (essentially as a live band), and quintet built around the stable core of pianist and bassist Patricio Villarroel and Michel Gladieux. Snoopy's Time is their second album, concentrated on the rhythm section including the ever-faithful Jacques Mahieux on drums, and recorded three months after Mr Robinson (FFL 038LP), the first album, made as a quintet including Jef Sicard and Gérard Coppéré, both at the time saxophonists with Claude Delcloo's Full Moon Ensemble. It is the most classic album in their discography, marked by the influence on Patricio Villarroel of the electric explorations of Miles Davis's pianists from 1968, that is to say Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, and Keith Jarrett. Indeed, the use of echo, reverb and saturation by Patricio Villarroel is similar to that of his famous counterparts. It would be a year later in France, but with a sound all his own, that Siegfried Kessler would undertake similar experiments playing with Perception, a group similar in spirit to Dharma. Specialists may also evoke Paul Bley, notably on Scorpio (1973) and Sweet Earth Flying (1974), or even Richard Beirach with Dave Liebman on Drum Ode (1975), but these albums came out a few years after the innovative Snoopy's Time, surprisingly released in 1970. Even amongst all the instrumental funky music of the time, it is rare to find such a communicative energy, magnified all the more by the subtle use of effects and an innate sense of groove. DHARMA QUINTET End Starting LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Dharma Quintet's End Starting, originally released in 1971. For Gérard Marais, guitarist with Dharma (the quintet), from this third album -- in fact he replaced Gérard Coppéré, one of the two saxophonists present on the first album (FFL 038LP, 1970) -- Albert Ayler's instruction to play your own music was the detonator. This did not fall on deaf ears, and was particularly appropriate as it would have been difficult, even for a musician attracted to free jazz, to make something of his own from the esthetic and political direction taken by Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, or Sun Ra. What could be summarized as ethnic differences. The quest was to find one's own music, whatever the more or less apparent roots. For, at the beginning of the 1970s, Gérard Marais and his comrades in the Dharma Quintet were overwhelmed by electric period Miles Davis. Not the band with Pete Cosey, which was still gestating, but the one fascinated by electronic keyboards and the famous Fender Rhodes which added so much to the atmosphere of In A Silent Way (1969). From the beginning of Dharma, but without ever copying anyone, Patricio Villarroel played the role of Chick Corea with Miles Davis. While Gérard Marais, whose fulgurate playing added another dynamic to the group, was at the level of John McLaughlin, or Sonny Sharrock at the same period. Another important soloist, alto saxophonist Jeff Sicard was as inventive as Byard Lancaster, Noah Howard, Gary Bartz, Marion Brown, or Sonny Simmons. Questioned by a critic, years after the group split, Gérard Marais insisted on it being an idea born of the seventies, which seemed the only creative way to enable written music and improvisation to coexist. This was a philosophy that he would continue to develop within Michel Portal's group, on Splendid Yzlment (1972), but also in a great duo with Joseph Dejean (of Full Moon Ensemble), and yet again in a trio led by drummer Stu Martin, with two guitars the other being Claude Barthélemy. The Dharma Quintet, made their mark, appearing under the letter "D", between Dedalus and Dies Irae, on the list of major influences created in 1979 by Nurse With Wound. Licensed from Dharma. Obi strip; 12-page booklet; Edition of 700.

DHARMA Archipel LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Dharma's Archipel, originally released in 1973. "Do your own music!" was Albert Ayler's advice, received loud and clear in France. Cohelmec Ensemble, Workshop de Lyon, and the Dharma Quintet, three groups close in spirit, which would each illustrate, in their own way, a local principle: to get some distance from American free jazz. As far as Dharma is concerned, the community-based approach was put in place to escape from any academism. This may draw comparisons with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, but they were also influenced by Gong. The events of May '68 were fresh, and protest was still in the air: no leadership structure was possible, and personnel could change with each recording (on Archipel, a new drummer makes an appearance; however, there is no recorded trace of the group with Jean Querlier and François Méchali). Like its predecessor End Starting (FFL 040LP), Archipel is a constructed album, mixing free rock and European free jazz in a series of collective explosions based on abrupt and contrasting improvisations. For much of the time, piano, guitar, and saxophone intertwine over intense rhythms, with everything and anything being electrified. Retrospectively, such remarkable timbral combinations, evoking sometimes the freer passages of Cinemascope by Joachim Kühn with Toto Blanke (1974), make the demise of Dharma in 1974, even more regrettable. Their modernity has nothing to envy of the later advances of Paul Bley with guitar (Pat Metheny, John Scofield), or of OM on 1977's Rautionaha, Patricio Villarroel's electric piano adding a nonetheless surprisingly singular touch to Dharma. This is without mentioning a kind of incisive violence when things sped up, which was unique to the Dharma Quintet, or a sound as dense as that of On The Corner by Miles Davis (1972), or Stark Reality, John Abercrombie's group from around the same period. Who else could seem approximately close to the Dharma Quintet at the same time... Emergency, a quintet which had played and recorded in France. Masabumi Kikuchi in Japan also deserves a mention. Along with the Cohelmec Ensemble, the Workshop de Lyon, the Full Moon Ensemble, Perception, Armonicord, or the Michel Portal Unit, the Dharma Quintet stand out as one of the most important examples of free jazz as it was played in France at the beginning of the 1970s. Licensed from Dharma. Obi strip; 12-page booklet; Edition of 700.

VA Dusty Ballroom Vol. 1: In Dust We Trust LP
Aloha dear Aficionado -- welcome to Dusty Ballroom! It was in late 2008 in the heart of Berlin when the three passionate record lovers and partners in crime -- Der Staubfinger, Elmo Lewis, and Ilo Pan -- decided to launch a new series of vinyl-only club shindigs. Their aim was to break with the usual one-style-all-night-long-fixation that was served at most other vintage dances around at the time. Their ears were spread and minds wide-open for a vast variety of what they call the roots of their musical culture. Together they went on an ongoing trip -- traveling back in time, digging deeper on the most dusty and faraway vinylistic shores, exploring heaps of lost treasures, black pearls, and entertaining flotsam -- always looking for the perfect beat to hop with. Ever since blending styles ranging from 1920s Charleston, '30s swing and jazz though '40s jump blues, '50s rockabilly, mambo, cha cha, Cumbia, or calypso to '60s surf, big beat, ska, rocksteady, soul, mod, garage, psychedelia, early '70s funk, Afrobeat, boogaloo, Bollywood, and the whole world of mystic exotica they were eager to please a growing crowd of crazy cats, joyful jivers, and dirty dancers. Magic moves, consenting smiles, and some strange liqueur was what they got in return. Almost ten years have passed now and they still can't stop celebrating that steamy vinyl bounce once a month at the hottest venues in town -- often supported by the most far-out vintage live bands of our time... Enjoy this wild aural selection of many different styles that should work perfectly for both -- your booty shaking needs as well as your listening pleasures! 17 tracks recorded between 1966-1962. Features Enid Mosier & Her Trinidad Steel Band, The Olympics, Bill Black's Combo, Dorothy Collins, Jonah Jones, Gene & Eunice, Sil Austin, The Isley Brothers, The Shirelles, The Duals, Fatso & Flaire, Ruth Brown, Robert Parker, The Soupy Sales Show, Irene Lopez with Rio Gregory & His Band, Jamaica Johnny And His Milagro Boys, and Barbara George.

SHAKARCHI & STRANEUS Steal Chickens From Men And The Future From God CD
Shakarchi & Stranéus inhabit a secret place in the universe of music, one existing at the intersection of Scandinavian poplands, Hisingen forest raves, and outer-national placelessness. Faik Shakarchi and Daniel Stranéus famously started making beats together in the Gothenburg tapas-joint coat check where they both worked as clerks. Their now ten-year-old friendship is the story of legends, their sparse vinyl output the secret love of deep house 12" enthusiasts round the globe -- the warm, vibrant sounds found on those records are a stark contrast to the stripped-down effectiveness of their marathon DJ sets, frequently heard within the more nefarious examples of GBG nightlife. The duo has also been a part of Studio Barnhus since the very beginning, first letting the label into their strange and cozy world with the Dödskallar Och Korallrev EP in 2010, effectively turning what was then a one-release operation into a record label. The distinctive sound of that early material (described by one Discogs commenter as "enlightened, naive future dub for children") has been expanded upon and further defined on their debut album Steal Chickens From Men And The Future From God, its 12 cuts lovingly selected from a plethora of works floating in-and-out of makeshift studios from Storgatan to Gamlestan over the last seven years. The record took its final form at Nacksving, same place where recent albums from Talaboman and Kornél Kovács were sonically perfected in cahoots with mix engineer Matt Karmil. The label and the artists wish to thank Statens kulturråd for their endless patience during the creation of this masterpiece.

SNAD Home Away From House 12"
Chicago artist Snad, aka Shyam Anand, presents his debut EP for Suol. The title track, "Home Away From House", drops a softly stabby, hypnotic sequence on top of an elegantly subtle drum machine groove and synth bass. Things build up patiently with luscious delayed chords and rising strings. "Cut!!!" involves clever drum programming and cool reverbs in perfect harmony with a melodic bass riff and a silky, modulating analog lead. "Deep Looking" has a solid groove -- syncopated toms and claps join forces with a fast hi-hat pattern to provide plenty of momentum for this dreamily floating acid house number.

PIN GROUP Go To Town 12"
2018 repress. "New Zealand's Pin Group emerged out of the early '80s Christchurch scene and, with just two stunning singles and one brilliant five-song EP, have become an archetype for nearly all indie bands ever since. Ambivalence was not only The Pin Group's hypnotic debut, but also the very first release on Flying Nun. While guitarist Roy Montgomery, bassist Ross Humphries and drummer Peter Stapleton build off each other's jittery riffs, Montgomery's uncanny baritone pierces the torrential clangor. Conjuring both Wire's Chairs Missing and VU's White Light/White Heat, the band captures a truly unique sound -- evocative, yet austere. Wasting little time, The Pin Group released Coat in November 1981, merely two months after their first single. On the title track, Humphries' distant vocals call out as tense rhythms gradually push listeners over the edge. B-side track 'Jim' could easily have been recorded in Manchester circa 1979, but remains a master class in NZ post-punk atmospherics, menacing from start to finish. The Pin Group went back into the studio in January 1982 to record their third and final classic release. Featuring an expanded five-piece lineup with Mary Heney on guitar/vocals and Peter Fryer on viola, Go To Town is a work of taut perfection. Showcasing the band's dramatic chiaroscuro textures and arresting lyrics, 'Long Night' and 'When I Tell You' make staggeringly clear how much sonic ground The Pin Group covered in their unfortunately short tenure. These first-time standalone reissues, featuring Ronnie van Hout's original sleeve designs, are pressed on limited edition color vinyl. Now is the time to discover again the monochrome magnetism of this unparalleled and legendary band." Liner notes by Liz Harris. First-time reissue from legendary New Zealand band.

SPACEMEN 3 Dreamweapon 2LP
"August 1988, Spacemen 3 embark on one of the strangest events in the band's already strange history. Billed as 'An Evening Of Contemporary Sitar Music' (although consciously omitting the sitar), the group would play in the foyer of Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford, Middlesex to a largely unsuspecting and unsympathetic audience waiting to take their seats for Wim Wenders' film Wings Of Desire. Spacemen 3's proceeding set, forty-five minutes of repetitive drone-like guitar riffs, could be seen as the 'Sweet Sister Ray' of '80s Britain. Their signature sound is at once recognizable and disorienting -- pointing as much to the hypnotic minimalism of La Monte Young as to a future shoegaze constituency. On this double LP reissue, Dreamweapon is augmented by studio sessions and rehearsal tapes from 1987 that would lead up to the recording of Spacemen 3's classic Playing With Fire album. 'Spacemen Jam,' featuring Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce on dual guitar, is a side-long mediation on delicate textures and psychedelic effects. Includes download card and new insert with liner notes by Will Carruthers."

CORSANO & MICK FLOWER DUO, CHRIS The Radiant Mirror CD
2007 release. Chris Corsano plays drums in a duo with Mick Flower on shahi baaja (a Japanese electric dulcimer/auto-harp). The result is one of the most mesmerizing, auto-propelled outfits around, mixing Eastern mystic vibes with bottom end power. Recorded in Paris, 2006 after just less than a year of doing shows together following Chris's move to the UK. It was recorded in a live setting and thus documents their live sets and is the only available recording. Chris Corsano has gained a well-earned reputation as one of the hardest-working drummers around. Equally at home with intense kinetic explosions of energy and concentrated near-silence, he effortlessly flows from one idea to the next, always sympatico with his fellow musicians. He has recorded and gigged with, among others, Paul Flaherty, Thurston Moore, Jessica Rylan, Jim O'Rourke, Nels Cline, Jandek, Greg Kelly, Daniel Carter, Six Organs of Admittance, Evan Parker, amongst others. Mick is the founding member of the British avant-garde collective Vibracathedral Orchestra, one of the most seminal UK acts in the free music scene pioneering an approach that has influenced a tribe of other outsiders.

NO BABIES Someone To Watch Over Me LP
Someone to Watch Over Me follows on from the No Babies' debut LP of 2011 and its successive fleet of empowering/imploding 7"s and EPs. Victoria M. Ruiz (of Downtown Boys) provides backup vocals on "The Weight" and "Internalized", whilst "Hazia" features a quote from Ursula K. Le Guin's The Farthest Shore (1972). 180 gram, blue/red marbled vinyl; Reverse board sleeve; Includes lyric insert and download card; Edition of 500."Oakland, CA's No Babies return with their second LP, another furiously ecstatic exploration of the overlapping margins of punk, hardcore, and no wave. The pieces we've come to expect are all here: Jasmine Watson's invectives against capitalism, binaries, police; Ricky Martyr's inimitable and always surprising stop-start guitar; horns of all stripes breaking through the noise (Misha Poleschuck on tenor sax, clarinet); a nimble and powerful jazz-influenced rhythm section (Laura DeVeber on bass, Sean Nieves on drums). Their particular brand of composed/improvised noise/music has never been chaos at all (they've always known exactly what they're doing), and this time around the band seems more at one than ever, aided by the crispness and brightness of Jack Shirley's able production. These are walls of sound, something like a runaway train, or a writhing sea serpent, and we are along for the ride. This is music that feels necessary. These are songs that sound vital to survival. We must play them or we will explode. We must play them in order to explode. California in 2018 is a place that feels difficult to survive in. Our friends and neighbors are murdered by the state and its negligence; our homes could crumble or be stolen from us at a moment's notice; capital is bearing down in new and even more unimaginably cruel ways. The land itself is telling us that we shouldn't be here: fire, mudslides, earthquakes. Someone to Watch Over Me is a reminder of the twin powers of sorrow and strength, noise and melody, anger and joy. 'Joy/ Joy/ Joy/ Joy/ Joy/ Joy/ Joy/ Joy' Watson screams at the end of the album-closing titular song. Joy may be the only way out of this fresh hell -- No Babies make joyful noise and for that we should all be grateful." --Grace Ambrose

LOS CHICOS MALOS Los Chicos Malos LP
Vampisoul present the first reissue of Los Chicos Malos' self-titled album, originally released in 1980. Remastered sound from original tapes. Presented in facsimile artwork; 180 gram vinyl."Los Chicos Malos was a short-lived Colombian 'super group' of sorts from Cartagena with acclaimed pianist and composer Víctor M 'El Nene' del Real as orchestra director and arranger. Vocals were shared by John Jairo Murillo and Víctor Meléndez, both known for their work with The Latin Brothers, a popular Discos Fuentes band that El Nene had collaborated with previously as well. The three also worked with Víctor del Real's close childhood friend Joe Arroyo and his orchestra La Verdad during the 1980s, while El Nene had written and arranged for Michi Sarmiento in the 1970s and Adolfo Echeverría in the early '80s, later going on to found El Nene y Sus Traviesos in the 1990s. . . . The sole Los Chicos Malos long-playing album was produced by the legendary Mario Rincón and released in March 1980. The record features a range of tropical dancefloor bangers that include fan favorites like 'Los Chicos En Salsa' and 'Con Gusto Y Con Gana' plus the killer cut 'Pobre Soy Yo' with a smoking piano solo by El Nene. Four earlier Chicos Malos recordings came out on a various artists compilation, Guerra De Ritmos, on the Fuentes subsidiary imprint De Lujo. These tracks are equally impressive but were a lot less polished, being produced by pianist Roberto de la Barrera and featuring a different singer, 'El Guachi' Meléndez, while El Nene played electric piano for the recording date. The style heard on the later Los Chicos Malos long play was not much different than The Latin Brothers in that it deployed an irresistible mix of uncompromisingly hard salsa and cumbia infused with infectiously happy melodies punctuated by a distinctive double-trombone attack inspired by the Nuyorican street sound of Willie Colón. The record also aimed its sights at the Venezuelan market with the tune 'Viajera' and the costeño home crowd with the two merengue colombianas 'La Carestía' and 'Ritmo Con La Punta Del Pie' plus the cumbelé 'El Hombre Aquel' and the cumbia anthem 'Cumbia Y mechones'. . . . Just as uncompromisingly hard sounding as Fruko y sus Tesos and The Latin Brothers' recorded output, it is stuffed with lots of mid-tempo numbers propelled by a stripped down sound." KANNIBAL KOMIX Kannibal Komix LP
Vinilisssimo present a reissue of Kannibal Komix's self-titled release. Changing the original artwork of an album in certain territories was common practice back in the day, but using different band names in different countries is definitely something else. Die Anderen may or may not ring the bell, what about Kannibal Komix or Apocalypse? Well, they are exactly the same artists. They got together in the north of Germany after meeting in a talent show called Beat-Band-Ball in 1966. Jürgen Drews met the members of Chimes Of Freedom, the winning band, and simply asked to join them as lead guitarist. Not long after, the manager renamed the group as Die Anderen and sent them to the recording studio with the great Giorgio Moroder, Ariola's in-house producer at the time, and a whole album was made. This was obviously much earlier than Moroder's Munich Sound days, so there are no traces of Italo disco gimmicks here but good portions of fuzzy guitars instead... In fact, the anthemic Kannibal Komix song "Neurotic Reaction", produced by Moroder in these sessions, deserves to be included on a garage compilation next to classics like "Try It" by The Standells... Maybe this explains why they were spotted at Hamburg's Star Club and picked by some American managers to sign a deal with Colossus Records. Their almost perfect vocal harmonies and soft psych tunes spiced with a pinch of fierce guitars made the band sound very interesting for the US market but the group needed a new name: Kannibal Komix (or Apocalypse in other territories). A second album followed but nothing really happened despite rising high expectations, and the band split by the end of 1969, almost at the same time that their second album hit the shops worldwide. While "Neurotic Reaction" would be a perfect choice for a European "nuggets" compilation, there is much more to this album than just that standout track. "Cosy Rosy" leans towards prog sounds while keeping some solid pop elements that recall the best of the British Invasion, "Elenor" is an almost perfect match between orchestral arrangements and the dramatic voice of band leader Jürgen Drews, resulting in a three minute psych-pop delight... The remaining nine tracks are further top quality examples of classic late '60s sounds, from tender moments to raw energy, always imaginatively arranged and performed. Presented in facsimile gatefold sleeve and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

LOS YETIS Los Yetis LP
Vinilisssimo present the first reissue of Los Yetis' self-titled album, originally released in 1966. Although many people would only think of tropical genres when discussing Colombian music or Discos Fuentes, there is much more to it than that. In the mid-60s, following the massive success of Los Teen Tops, Los Apson, or Los Rockin' Devils in the Latin world, Los Yetis were signed to Discos Fuentes as part of the bunch of new bands included on their 14 Impactos Juveniles compilation (1966), as an attempt to reach a new audience very much interested in the rock n' roll sounds imported from the States. A great promotional effort resulted in a huge success for the release and Los Yetis were soon invited to record their own debut album, this self-titled LP. As the opening track of the album starts to play, you can imagine the Colombian youth dancing with excitement to this new rock n' roll music as hard as they would dance to local rhythms. No wonder that Los Yetis' take on the Little Anthony & The Imperials hit "Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop" is at least as effective on the dancefloor as the original. Most of the album is devoted to thrilling cover versions (Beatles, Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, Los Brincos...), but as you approach the last grooves of the record, the wild guitars and raw vocals of "Ya No Te Aguanto Más" set the party on fire. That irresistible garage beat track is not only the standout song but also the only original by Los Yetis on the entire album. However, another local band, Los Ampex, has to be credited for playing the instruments on these recordings, as brothers Juancho and Iván Darío López and Juan Nicolás Estela, the original members, were rather a vocal trio than a skilled band. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

CINDY LEE Act Of Tenderness LP
"Cindy Lee is the diva alter-ego of singer/guitarist/drag queen Patrick Flegel, the one-time captain of heralded Canadian experimental guitar pop act, Women. In Flegel's working on/as Cindy Lee exclusively over recent years, their songwriting makes a move toward high atmospherics, often achieving a mysterious sweetness rooted equally in beauty and ache. As Cindy Lee's first long-form statement, Act Of Tenderness makes use of antipodal themes to create a living sound: static with grace, distortion and sugar, all masterfully arranged with crooked nods toward pop classicism. The layered vocal on 'Power And Possession' creates a palpable haunt, bringing historical girl-group lament to choir-esque heights. The feedback shriek and industrial grind of 'Bonsai Garden' provides near-operatic damage, yet never stumbles into the irrevocably grave. These snowy pieces give the album a decidedly cinematic feel, albeit one bent more towards Eraserhead. Originally released in a scant private edition in 2015, Superior Viaduct's imprint W.25TH is pleased to give Act Of Tenderness its deserving wide release."
