BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Methodrone 2LP
2018 repress. Released on 180 gram black vinyl. Deluxe gatefold with printed inner sleeves. 2007 release -- originally released in 1995. Redolent with the spirit of such high priests of effects and delay as Loop, Spaceman 3, and My Bloody Valentine, not to mention a fair dollop of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Methodrone clearly is the sum of its influences. Thankfully, BJM does a very solid job with them throughout the album's course of over 70 minutes.

Plus vocal performances by Eliza Karmasalo (in Finnish). This album brings the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound mixed with Eastern influences and brings it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 40 years.

THROWER, STEPHEN Trouser Bar LP
Side one features the pounding disco soundtrack to Trouser Bar (2016), composed, recorded and produced by musician and writer Stephen Thrower. The film was directed by gay porn legend Kristen Bjorn, produced by esteemed author and screenwriter David McGillivray, and written by 'A Gentleman'. Side two features Thrower's music commissioned by the BFI for two silent films by Peter De Rome: Encounter (1971) and The Fire Island Kids (1971). In contrast to the disco fever of Side one, these tracks reside upon the stranger shores of Thrower's work with Cyclobe and UnicaZürn. Thrower first gained attention in the 1980s, as a member of Coil. He formed Cyclobe in 1998 with his long-term partner Ossian Brown and also works with David Knight as UnicaZürn."Thrower scores a pulsating and hypnotic disco suite, comprised of shifting moods that span an epic 20 minutes -- imagine the more inspired moments in the music of Bobby O, Cerrone or Patrick Cowley. To accompany, Thrower has programmed new commissions for two silent films by the 'grandfather of gay porn', Peter De Rome. These tracks, in contrast to the A-side, share the same haunting and experimental tropes as his work in Cyclobe and Coil. Essential." --Jonathan Burnip, DJ Mag

MUSHAPATA Saba-Saba Fighting 12"
A fantastic mixture of brakka, reggae, and Afrobeat. Mushapata, a boxing champion, stepped out of the ring but kept fighting with music, lyrics, and his band, Saba-Saba Fighting. His first self-produced recordings reveal a rough mix of lo-fi reggae, Afrobeat rhythms accompanied by a brass section close to free jazz. The nonchalant sounding voices of Mushapata and Tshayi complete this explosive cocktail and carry in Swahili language. the pan-African ideas of Lumumba, and other great figures of African-American struggles. Recorded between 1980 and 1984. Includes liner notes in English, French, and Japanese.

ANGELO, MICHAEL Michael Angelo LP
"Unlike many self-created obscurities rescued from the margins, Michael Angelo (aka The Guinn Album) isn't the effort of some fanatical, ponderous bedroom wiz delivered with passion in lo-fi, but a fully-fledged pro-studio recording executed by multi-instrumentalist and full-time session man in mid-to-late '70s Kansas City, MO, Michael Angelo Nigro. An enigmatical exemplar of subterranean overachievers, Michael created the album as a labor of economy during studio off-hours when he was given free reign, and since its discovery by fringe-searchers it has been christened a heavy-hitter in the pantheon of 'out-of-time' treasures. Self-produced and nearly fully self-created (with drums handled by Frank Gautieri), Michael Angelo is a staggering, hook-filled, inner space hi-fi snapshot of dreamy folk-rock, Anglophile-pop and light psychedelia, filled with contemplative, arresting lyrical imagery and carries little to ally it to its time (spare some shimmering keyboards). Sprouting in the mid-50s, Michael's head was first turned by Joe Meek-produced 'Telstar' by the Tornados in 1962, and later listened closely when the Beatles put the whole world on its ear. Gifted his first guitar by a doting aunt at age 11, soon the prodigy gained six-string proficiency, began his first furtive attempts at songwriting, and taught himself to play bass, harmonica, and piano over the next few years. The typically teenage pursuit of fronting his own high school band followed, Norwegian Wood, and several other short-lived combos followed. Next, via an ad in a Kansas City newspaper, he happened upon the opportunity of studio work at age 20. During the next few years at Liberty Recording -- where Michael Angelo was recorded in 1976 -- and Big-K (where it was mixed in 1977) he worked steadily, and the eponymously titled debut LP was released on the Big-K subsidiary Guinn Records in 1977. With its strummy, jangly folk-rock guitar, incendiary lead lines, big, resonant piano chords and plaintive tinkling, Michael Angelo isn't just a collection of songs, but a fully-conceived, cohesive, album-length statement, which stands toe-to-toe with other 'out-of-time' heroes like Anonymous, Rick Saucedo and Bobb Trimble. There's denseness to Michael's lyrics formed by an active imagination, tapping into abstracts, the unseen, astral and spiritual ideas, fantastical and sci-fi perspectives, character studies, and the other side of life."

CREATION REBEL/NEW AGE STEPPERS Threat to Creation LP
2014 release. "This 1981 collaboration between two acts on Adrian Sherwood's nascent On-U Sound label captures, like few other records of the day, the dubbed-out pressure of living in Thatcherite London, pounded flat by class warfare and left to fend for itself. Threat to Creation channels raw earth blues through pounding rhythms and left-field sonic anachronisms, and reclaims dub reggae as a music defined by struggle. Sherwood's touch created invisible links between dub and punk rock, fostered through guest appearances by Ari Up (The Slits) and Keith Levene (Public Image Ltd.). Anthology is pleased to present the first-ever U.S. edition of this crucial work."

FOLSOM, ROBERT LESTER Ode To A Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975 LP
"Rock and pop music are, by all accounts, as unfair as life itself. Imagine spending the prime years of one's life, slowly honing one's skills as a guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and fledgling producer/engineer, only to have the developed fruits of your labor passed over by industry, radio, even those who you may have connected with earlier. Such was the fate of Music And Dreams, a wonderful, privately-issued album released by Robert Lester Folsom in 1976 that's very special to us here at Anthology Recordings, and an all-new collection of his home recordings, entitled Ode To A Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975. Robert Lester Folsom's story isn't all that uncommon in the parlance of his era. Too young to be drafted, he spent the '60s growing up in Adel, Georgia, a small town nearer to Valdosta and Florida's northern border than anything resembling rock & roll, obsessing over his guitar as his craft and skills grew. Convincing a friend to go in on a Sears reel-to-reel tape recorder, which he'd eventually buy out, Folsom caught the recording bug, traveling all around the area with his mobile unit, capturing sound to tapes for hire, and mastering the art of multitracking, which would become essential to his own material. With a number of friends home from college here and there, Folsom would write and record a wealth of material, eventually self-releasing an 8-track tape of his strongest selections, which makes up the backbone of Ode To A Rainy Day -- the first time these songs have been heard in decades. The polish you'll find on Music And Dreams is missing from the tracks on Ode, and if that's how you need to swing, so be it. Ostensibly more homemade, if not entirely 'outsider' -- a tag usually reserved for musicians that exhibit some manner of concern to the outside world rather than their lack of suitability for the music industry, neither of which fits Folsom's character or material -- Ode showcases both impeccable songwriting across light folk, downer pop, front porch rock and woodshed country tropes, combined with ingenious arrangements and technical skills across primitive recording equipment."

MADBEN Frequence(s) 3x12"
3x12" version. Includes download code. Since his emergence in 2010, Madben's melodic, Detroit-inspired techno evolved, with various releases on Caduceus, Astropolis Records, Off Recordings, Inflyte, and Bedrock. Nowadays, the Paris-based artist remains a key figure in France's new generation of techno producers, with an upcoming debut LP on Astropolis Records. Swinging from atmospheric sounds to techno, Madben produces an alchemy of rave anthems, hardware material and groovy, emotional music. With support from France's favorite Laurent Garnier, Manu Le Malin, and Rebekah Warrior, Fréquence(s) unveils his skillful, mature universe. The opening track "Space Bubbles" carries a cinematic, ethereal touch designed for dancefloor, from dusk till dawn. "Mouvement Circulaire" sets out a slow hypnotic rhythm, leading to "Narcotica" and its warm melodies. "MG's Groove", produced with master Laurent Garnier uncovers Madben's house moves, percussive beats, and distorted synths. "Reminiscence" and "Stripes" wink at Madben's earlier melodic techno imprints, while "Don't Lose The Beat" uses old school vocal as the LP's boiling point. Modern techno vision is underlined with tracks such as "Tom & Tom" and "The Struggle", both waving between UK inspirations, aerial sounds, and Ben's original signature. Featuring Manu Le Malin and Rebekah Warrior, "Grief, Dance To Death" stands out from the rest, swaying betwixt French vocals and rave spirit, whereas the album's last piece, "Lunar Park", ends the journey with a gripping ethereal melody.

SHACKS, THE Haze CD
"Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming one of the year's big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, Haze, solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz. When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistry lies at the heart of Haze, a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band's debut. Produced together by Shrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who's played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, and countless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager's basement and Michels' Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed 'the Shangri La of Soul.' Haze opens with the title track, which is, appropriately enough, the first song Shrager and Wise ever wrote together. It's a spare, smoky tune that shimmers and sparkles as it shifts in and out of focus, and it's an ideal gateway into the immersive world of The Shacks. On the breezy 'Follow Me,' they channel the infectious charm of a 60's girl group, while the soulful 'My Name Is' grooves its way through a mesmerizing take on 70's funk. Much like a dream, the songs often merge the familiar and the unfamiliar, constructing their own psychedelic reality full of beauty and yearning, all fueled by Wise's breathy vocals and the unmistakable electricity of a wildly creative band truly inhabiting their music. 'Birds' makes brilliant use of Daptone drum hero Homer Steinwess's impeccable feel behind the kit, while the 50's ballad-meets-baroque pop of 'Cryin'' tips its cap to Roy Orbison and John Lennon as Shrager takes over lead vocals, and the soulful shuffle of 'Texas' belies a dark and violent undercurrent ripped from the headlines. Through it all permeates an unshakable sense that this is a group performing just for you. 'Nobody' finds the Shacks re-interpreting Phil Spector's Wagnerian approach to rock & roll, complete with sweeping strings and darkly innocent lyrics. The 13 songs featured on Haze plays out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty. In the short time that they've been together, The Shacks have already made an impressive mark. Their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies' 'This Strange Effect' soundtracked a global iPhone commercial, one which actually stars Wise herself, and their self-titled EP earned the band dates with St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Chicano Batman, and their Big Crown Records labelmates Lee Fields & The Expressions." Features a second bonus CD with the shacks self-titled EP, selections previously issued only on 7" vinyl and complete instrumentals from Haze.

WORKSHOP DE LYON 50th Anniversary 6CD BOX
The Workshop De Lyon (previously known as Free Jazz Workshop from 1967 to 1975) is one of the first French free jazz bands. They never stopped playing in 50 years. This boxset is a reissue of their seven LPs (from 1973 to 1997) plus a long out-of-print CD and some live bonus tracks from 1979 and 2010. After some changes of musicians at the very beginning of the band, they released their first album in 1973 with Jean Méreu (trumpet), Maurice Merle (sax), Patrick Vollat (piano), Jean Bolcato (bass), and Christian Rollet (drums). After the first album Jean Méreu left the band and the young Louis Sclavis joined the band. On the third album the pianist left which left the band as a quartet to this today. Louis Sclavis left the band after 14 years to be replaced by Jean-Paul Autin in 1988. The death of Maurice Merle in 2003 almost marked the end of the band. Jean Aussanaire replaced him quickly and has stayed in the band since. Workshop De Lyon played thousands of gigs all over the world: Brazil, Syria, Egypt, USA, and all over Europe. They have their very peculiar sound and tunes, you might call "ARFI soud", named after the musical collective they started in 1977 in Lyon including bands like Marvelous Band and La Marmite Infernale.

CHADBOURNE WITH STEVE BERESFORD & ALEX WARD, EUGENE Pleasures of the Horror LP
Bisou Records asked Eugene Chadbourne to do an album for children and he proposed an album about horror movies and monsters. Some references are obvious, like "The Thing", "Blacky Lagoony", etc., and some are about strange characters, like "Vampire Tiger Girl", and some are covers (Sam And The Shams, Shockabilly). It's probably the best recorded album of Eugene Chadbourne. Eugene met Steve Beresford and Alex Ward in London at Eastcote Studios, where Adele, Duran Duran, Aswad, Tindersticks, and Depeche Mode recorded). They used a good part of the instruments available there: grand piano, wood organ, many amps, loads of keyboards. Steve Beresford is famous for his solo recording The Bath Of Surprise (1980). He was part of The Melody Four (with Lol Coxhill and Tony Coe) and released records on labels like Emanem, nato, and Tzadik. Alex Ward was 14 when Derek Bailey started to play with him, as a duo, and in a trio with Steve Noble. He is a great musician who can improvise on the clarinet as well as create noise on electric guitar.

VA Tokyo Flashback 2LP
Repressed! Black Editions present the first ever vinyl edition of Tokyo Flashback, the legendary 1991 compilation that defined the Tokyo psychedelic movement and first brought it to the outside world. Tokyo Flashback is one of the most iconic compilations in the history of underground music. Originally released by Japan's P.S.F. Records, Tokyo Flashback defined the breathtakingly unique and previously obscured musical movement that had been developing in Japan since the late 1970s. The compilation features some of the earliest released recordings by Keiji Haino, High Rise, Masaki Batoh's Ghost, White Heaven, Fushitsusha, Kousokuya, and Marble Sheep. It captures the excitement and energy of a Tokyo awash in Technicolor and deep blacks; the music echoing krautrock, psychedelic freak-outs, garage, and no wave. At the same time it reveals astonishing, totally idiosyncratic expansions of rock music. In time, Tokyo Flashback expanded to a synonymous nine volume series that, over the following two decades, unveiled Japan's ever evolving soundscapes to the rest of the world. Tokyo Flashback is a defining statement of late 20th century Japanese psychedelic music and an essential primer to the world of P.S.F. All tracks are exclusive, this edition features the first time translation of the original liner notes. Black Editions' deluxe edition is entirely re-mastered and marks the first release of Tokyo Flashback outside of Japan and it's first ever vinyl issue. Also features Verzerk. Newly created artwork and design expanding on the original by Rob Carmichael at SEEN Sudio; Housed in custom printed deluxe Stoughton gatefold jacket and slipcase, including full color printed inner sleeves and inserts with soft touch and spot UV gloss finishes; Remastered and cut by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound; Pressed to high quality vinyl at RTI.

AMBARCHI, OREN Grapes From The Estate 2LP
Black Truffle make Oren Ambarchi's Grapes From The Estate available once more on vinyl. Originally released on CD on Touch in 2004 (TO 061CD) and reissued on Southern Lord as a limited double-LP in 2006 during Ambarchi's tenure as a member of Sunn O))), Grapes From The Estate was a landmark release for Ambarchi, seeing him expand his sonic palette beyond the clipped, bass-heavy electric guitar tones he was known for at that point. Incorporating subtle layers of strings, keyboards, percussion over a bedrock of his signature guitar tones, in retrospect this album can be seen as the beginning of a broadening and evolution in Ambarchi's work that would lead to his acclaimed, densely layered epics for Editions Mego, Quixotism (EMEGO 202CD/LP, 2014) and Hubris (EMEGO 227CD/LP, 2016). Beginning with the shuddering pure tones of opener "Corkscrew", which looks back to previous guitar-only releases such as Suspension (TO 033.18CD, 2001), the album's next two pieces show a progressive broadening of the instrumental palette and a corresponding move away from textural abstraction and sustained tones towards more traditional notions of musicality. This reached its high point on the album's third piece, the fifteen-minute long "Remedios The Beauty", where guitars, both acoustic and electric, strings, piano, and bells build from a murmur to an interlocking web of repeating melodic patterns over gently swinging brushed snare and cymbals. The epic closer, "Stars Aligned, Webs Spun", returns you to a space populated only by the electric guitar, but unlike everything Ambarchi had produced up until this point in his career, the piece has a liquid, psychedelic edge that looks forward to the shimmering harmonics of his more recent work. As Brendan Walls wrote at the time of the original release, this is "another outpouring of personal, intimate and enduring music from Oren Ambarchi". Original artwork and design by Jon Wozencroft. Redesigned by Stephen O'Malley. Remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Gatefold sleeve.

PAUL, LESTON Let's Party Tonight 12"
"12 Inch, 45RPM EP -- packaged in disco sleeve! Being totally infected in the mid-seventies by the new possibilities analog synthesizers were offering in sound and studio production, Leston Paul became the pioneer in electronic music production in the early eighties in Trinidad. Leston Paul is one of the most in-demand music producers and arrangers in the Carribeans. It is said that he has worked as a producer on more than twenty-thousand recordings. In 1983 Leston Paul felt the time was right to record his debut album, The Arrival which was done at K.H. Studios in Port of Spain. His obsession with synthesizers led to a heavy use of electronic instruments like an Oberheim synth, a Roland bass machine, a Roland drum machine and a Simmons Digital Clap Machine on this record. Most of the instruments were played by Leston himself. On vocals he used well known singers like Charmaine Forde, Nadie La Fond, Carl & Carol Jacobs, Joanne Wilson and Peter Britto. Due to lack of proper distribution sales weren't very good. This circumstance makes this record very rare today and sought after. Leston was introduced to Kool & The Gang's background vocalist Barbara Hernandez by his friend Jeff Medina. Leston had started to write and record 'All Nite Tonight' in Trinidad and brought the song to New York. At the Millford Plaza Hotel Hernandez and Paul finalized the song and decided to re-record the track at the Sound Lab Studio. Kool & The Gang were playing a gig the same day of the recording session in New York and Leston managed to get them into the studio to record the horn section. Barabara Hernandez took Leston to Kool & The Gang's home studio in New Jersey and was very impressed by the sound quality they were able to produce and decided to adopt this model in Trinidad."

EQUIKNOXX Bird Sound Power 2LP
2018 repress. Equiknoxx is one of the hottest, most innovative dancehall squads from Jamaica. Bird Sound Power is their debut collective show of strength, packing twelve avant, crooked riddims by core members Gavsborg and Time Cow, plus Bobby Blackbird and Kofi Knoxx, with vocals by Kemikal, Shanique Marie and J.O.E. (R.I.P). The set was parsed and pieced together by Jon K & Demdike Stare, and now thanks to link ups via Swing Ting's Balraj Samrai, it is issued on Demdike's DDS imprint, replete with Jon K's sleeve design. Easily identified by the squawking bird idents peppering their cuts, Equiknoxx productions have been big in the dance since Gavin Blair, aka Gavsborg, produced Busy Signal's billboard hit "Step Out" in 2005, followed by key instrumentals for Beenie Man, Aidonia, Masicka and T.O.K. - with many released on 7" through their Equiknoxx Musiq label, and some of which, such as Aidonia's "Negative", are included in this set. Bird Sound Power arguably marks up the most striking riddim album from Jamaica in 2016, weighted with the potential to open up perceptions of current dancehall thanks to the mad character and broad reference points of its producers, encompassing King Jammy's foundational digi-dub and Dave Kelly's Mad House sound as much as rugged New York hip-hop and the wigged-out, feminine pressure of Virginia Beach's Timbaland or The Neptunes. The oldest tune inside dates to 2009, but the rest are relatively recent dancehall mutations, including a number of exclusives produced in the last 12 months. Each one represents Equiknoxx's unique aspects, such as Jordan Chung's, aka Time Cow, brilliantly bizarre, layered arrangements of film samples, sawn-off hooks and digi-tight beats, whilst also a result of as their distinguished family vibe, Bird Sound Power exists in a paradox, contemporary but classic, and with as much potential to turn new heads onto current Jamaican sounds as Mowax's Now Thing set back in 2001. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. All on vinyl for the first time ever.

EQUIKNOXX Colon Man 2LP
2018 repress. Colón Man is the debut album proper by visionary Jamaican dancehall artists Gavin Blair (Gavsborg) and Jordan Chung (Time Cow) plus their extended crew, aka Equiknoxx -- once again for Demdike Stare's label. Where their widely acclaimed Bird Sound Power (DDS 020CD/LP) primer compilation, issued on DDS in 2016, brought the rest of the world up to speed with the music produced between late '00s and 2015, their first album now brings a 2020 sound into sharp, technoid focus through a baker's dozen steely, heat-seeking riddims galvanized with clinical electronics and a Midas Touch approach to sampling. The record's title, Cólon Man refers to a Jamaican tale (and song) about a mysterious character, whom, like Marcus Garvey, was one of over 100,000 Jamaicans who returned from working in Cólon on completion of the Panama Canal. In context of the album, Gavsborg and Timecow take the story as a metaphorical foundational for a roots and future sound, acknowledging the vital groundwork of previous generations of producers, whilst soundly contextualizing their mutant new advancements of Jamaican dancehall. Recorded between December 2016 and June 2017, the results of Colón Man form a stark, stripped down and conceptually blinding record. In tone and texture, the duo favor far colder, more abstract sounds, crucially lit up with sparingly used samples that lend the record its dissonant, harmonic color and bittersweet hooks, stylishly feeding forward their playfully weird sense of humor into a rugged, nutty, and even noisily imagineered set. Bookended by the gauzy, Detroit-compatible synth looks and acid hall grind of "Kareece Put Some Some Thread In A Zip Lock", and the mesh of Motor City sleekness with Far Eastern strings on "Waterfalls In Ocho Rios", they distill and diversify their bonds in myriad ways across the album. There's a killer dancehall/trap hybrid in the percolate chorales and man trills of "Plantain Porridge", along with the secretive dub-into-dancehall transfusion of Addis Pablo's melodica in the belly rolling "Melodica Badness", while "Ceremonial Eating Dog" and the hyaline designs of "We Miss You Little Joe" -- a tribute to their pal Alty Nunes -- are arguably the most forward Jamaican riddims you'll hear in 2017, and "Enter A Raffle... Win A Falafel" uncannily recalls the clockwork mechanics of Haruomi Hosono's "Alternative 3", from his S-F-X LP (1984). Curated by Jon K and Demdike Stare. RIYL: Lenky, Haruomi Hosono, Errorsmith. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

PHONO GHOSTS Solar Dream Reel 2LP
Phono Ghosts (alias of producer Neil Scrivin, also behind Meatbingo) returns with his long-awaited second album released via brand new imprint Fonolith. Building upon the cassette-raiding, micro-sampling methodology and varied sound landscape of 2013's Chrome Position on Skam Records, Solar Dream Reel is a journey through summery funk, mangled radio jingles, evocative atmospheres, and anthemic edit-stomp, all filtered via the shimmery analog lens of the compact cassette. A sonic exploration of that borderland between the waking world and sleep -- a place everyone has been to but few remember -- Phono Ghosts comes back to reality with a selection of vivid Polaroids and cassette memories from his visits to the hypnagogic hinterland of the collective unconscious and presents these pure distilled documents for you on four beautiful sides of vinyl. Something may have come back with him...

FAHRLAND Mixtape Vol. 1 LP
LP version. Includes download code. To those familiar with the output of Cologne-based imprint Firm from back in the early '00s, the name of Geiger, alias Nass, shall undoubtedly ring a bell. Herald of a hedonistic mélange of funk-soaked electro pop and guitar-riddled synth music, sitting somewhere close to acts like Ween and Junior Boys, Alexander Geiger is about to break an eight-year hiatus with the drop of his debut album under the newly-founded moniker of Fahrland. A release that both encompasses a healthy dose of the discoid tropes from the Firm era but also aspires to split with a segment of it, geared towards exploring further undisclosed fringes of his shape-shifting sound universe, Mixtape Vol.1 is the fruit of a decisive move from the sleepless Berlin to the peaceful countryside landscapes of Fahrland -- a lushly forested area near Potsdam which you'll have understood played an essential role in Geiger's longed-for return. Versatile and inclusive, the album sweeps a polyamorous gamut of styles and tempos like an answer to the virtual prisons that inhibit us on a daily basis, straying away from normative standards and classic full-length calibration as a result. Instead weaving a singular narrative course, clear from all type of shackles and chains, Geiger navigates on sight, reflecting on notions as wide and universal as freedom, friendship and love across a multiversal patchwork of sounds and feels. From the languid sexy vibe of "Beggin", "Plastic People" and "Yesterday" -- all three featuring the sensual whispers of multi-talented vocalist and artist MZ Sunday Luv, through the heavily vocodered, chip-implemented groove of "I AM ROBOT" -- reminiscent of Telex and Space Art, Balearic jazz and rap shine of "Sky So High", smoky lounge ambience of "L AND H" onto broader ambient-friendly spans such as "Suspension", "Windshield Gently Wipers", and the smooth, sun-basking closer "Get Down", each track holds a fragile cocooned world at its heart.

Rising Bolivian duo Animal Print serve up the aptly named Badalamenti-esque roller "The Last Night Of Laura Palmer" which recalls the bizarro ambiences of Twin Peaks all the while following a rather straightforward, frontally club-ready sense of style.

PLASTIC CLOUD Plastic Cloud LP

This is a record with few equals, full of foreboding melodies and lovely hippie harmonies, as well as some of the most superb and trippiest, Eastern sounding fuzz guitar ever recorded. There is no point singling out a specific track, they are all excellent -- one is equally as good as the next. Take for example the album centerpiece, the ten-and-a-half-minute 'You Don't Care,' an insane piece of social commentary that features terrific back-of-the-mix fuzz guitar as an elusive focal point to its extended pounding-drum laden instrumental breaks; with a great chorus and a plaintive melody in the verse, it doesn't overstay its welcome, winding its way to a final freak out. BONGA Angola 72 LP
"The masterpiece of legendary Angolan singer Bonga Angola 72, finally re-edited in vinyl LP with their original sleeves. José Adelino Barcelo de Carvalho was born in Kipiri in 1953. When he was still a child, his family moved to a district in the north of the city of Luanda. Formerly a fortress built in 1576, the capital of Angola was still a Portuguese colony at the time. In his youth, before José changed his colonial name to the more Angolan Bonga Kuenda, he lived in the city's poorer quarters, called musseques -- meaning 'built with sand' in Kimbundu, one of the country's main languages. In the mid Fifties, Africa was beginning to rebel against colonial domination. Seventy years after the Berlin Conference, where the European powers divided up the continent between them, liberation movements were gathering momentum. Both peaceful negotiations and armed resistance heralded the end of colonization and the independence of different nations that followed in the next decade. Under the dictator Salazar, Portugal was one of the more intractable colonial powers. It decided to try and crush the green shoots of independence in Angola, where there were frequent rural revolts -- especially in the northern bush. In the musseques surrounding Luanda, there was much talk of armed struggle against the colonial troops. A climate of general unrest reigned in Ilha de Cabo, Barrio Operario and Sambizanga, where the Caribbean filmmaker Sara Maldoror shot one of the finest records of decolonization ever made. In the white districts, European administrators went about their everyday business with a few asimilados -- privileged Angolans who had embraced the culture, language and religion of the colonists. But in the suburbs, poets, novelists and artists led the resistance movement. They studied the history of their country and were inspired by stories of their ancestor N'Gola Kiluanje, King of N'Dongo, who fought the Portuguese army for many years back in the sixteenth century."

SCHULZE, KLAUS Virtual Outback CD
"Re-release of the high acclaimed album Virtual Outback (originally released 2000 as part of the strictly limited and long exhausted five-CD-boxset Contemporary Works II). Virtual Outback was just one single track: the elegiac 65 minute 'The Theme: The Rhodes Elegy', one of the most favourite of many Schulze fans. The bonus track is from a filling work for the Chinese mass rally 'China Millenium' on the occasion of the turn of millennium 2000/2001. After Klaus' delivery the Chinese government said: 'NO - WAY'! First Klaus used the old Mao song, divided by cutting and transposing, and second he used an ethnic sample from Mongolia. That wasn't possible too, due to the fact that Mongolians are a minority in China. The Chinese government stated: either you respect all minorities or no one. Another pearl from the huge Schulze cosmos."

SCHULZE, KLAUS Wahnfried: Trance Appeal CD
"Re-release of Schulze's Wahnfried project where he collaborated with a lot of different artists. On Trance Appeal (originally released 1996) it was Jörg Schaaf who did the computer programming and played keyboards. Klaus Schulze sensed techno in the '90s as a quite logical progress in electronic music; it was this magic 'Techno Trance Appeal' that fascinated him. Trance Appeal was the album to come before Are You Sequenced? (also in 1996). Klaus followed his influences but stayed 100% Schulze. He created wonderful trance aesthetics, never losing the Klaus Schulze feel we love so much. The bonustrack 'Marooned' stems from a later recording session, also with Jörg Schaaf."

SMITH, CRAIG Love is Our Existence LP
LP version. Tip-on gatefold sleeve; Includes liner notes; Edition of 500. Craig Smith was an extraordinarily gifted songwriter and musician who seemed poised for a successful career in the 1960s music business until his life was derailed by drugs and schizophrenia. In 1969 clean-cut, charismatic Craig Smith became Maitreya Kali, a dark, disturbed psychedelic Messiah figure with a black widow spider tattooed on his third eye. He laid out his strange vision on a self-released double-album Apache/Inca (1972), which would become a sought-after artifact of the psychedelic era. Success came easily for Craig Smith. In 1963, right out of high school he became a cast member of the popular Andy Williams TV show as one of the Good Time Singers, a wholesome folk ensemble that recorded for Capitol Records. Next he landed one of the lead parts in a new TV show, The Happeners, about a Greenwich Village folk group. But when the TV pilot was not picked up, he set out on his own musical path with the folk-rock duo Chris & Craig and then the more psychedelic Penny Arkade, produced and managed by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. Throughout this period Smith was constantly writing songs, some of which were recorded by other artists, including the Monkees ("Salesman"), Andy Williams ("Holly", "Christmas Holiday"), the Robbs ("Rapid Transit"), and Glen Campbell ("Country Girl"). But soon afterwards, his life took a dark, terrifying turn. Turning to LSD and Eastern mysticism he journeyed through Asia along the hippie trail where he was brutally attacked, raped, and left for dead. He was never the same again. As Maitreya Kali, he self-released the now legendary Apache and Inca albums in 1972 before disappearing into the shadows. He spent much of the 1970s in prison or in mental institutions before eventually drifting into homelessness on the streets of Hollywood. He died in his sleeping bag in North Hollywood Park in March 2012. Craig's older brother Gary contacted Stax with a trove of unreleased music. The best of those songs are presented on Love Is Our Existence. Professionally recorded in Los Angeles studios between 1966 and 1971, these previously unheard songs reveal a singer and songwriter of breathtaking depth and talent. Remastered from acetate discs and master tapes.

OKKRE Epica LP
Okkre (Uge Pañeda) is producer of the Spanish duo LCC, who have released two albums on Editions Mego. This is the soundtrack to a very special performance named Épica. Directed by Aimar Pérez Galí, it was premiered at Sonar 2017. Épica brings clubbing culture inside the theater, to deliver a highly energetic performance, joining bodies, sound and voices of historic and political dissidence. The music of the soundtrack has been adapted for its release on vinyl. The piece begins with the rhythmic movement of beats, which provides a structured backdrop. They are complemented by a swirling bassline. Overlaid percussions of differing styles come in-and-out. Harsh almost metallic synths enter after a few minutes, which also have the sensation of breathing. Later on, powerful synths battle sturdy cymbal assisted percussion. In the latter stages, everything gets even more intense techno feel and the A Side ends with dense dark synths. While the other side gently mixes a melodic bassline that moves like the wind with intertwined chorus and voices, which appeal to the spirit of the artistic work, evoking space for feeling and touching. At the same time, insistent beats offer a club feeling. Scary yet empowering strings create a hypnotic atmosphere alongside falling keys and vocal impressions.

STEVE BUG & LANGENBERG Paradise Sold 2LP
The irresistible pairing of Steve Bug and Langenberg present Paradise Sold, a full vinyl album of exquisitely crafted house music on Bug's own Poker Flat Recordings. The album is a masterclass in house music production and came to life as a true collaborative work. "It feels great to work with Max and I don't know why we didn't get to work together earlier," says Steve Bug. "It feels very natural to be in the studio together and our two worlds match easily. I think I speak for the both of us when I say that by combining forces, we came up with tunes we wouldn't have created on our own." The album is centered around hardware heavy production made with a blend of legendary and aesthetic synthesizers like the Juno 60 and 106, Studio Electronics Omega 8, or the classic Roland TB 303 and mixed by legendary mixing engineer Hannes Bieger, who mixed tracks for producers like Dixon, Ame, Ben Klock, Stephan Bodzin, Ellen Allien, DJ Tennis, and many more. Neither Steve Bug nor Langenberg needs much introduction due to the sizeable contributions both have made in building the European house and techno scene as we know it. Bug's relentless commitment to quality -- both in his own work and in the many producers he has championed -- has made him one of electronic music's most revered artists and curators.

BLACKSEA NAO MAYA Calor No Frio 12"
2015 release. Kolt, Noronha, and Perigoso return to Príncipe with a whole EP. Blacksea Nao Maya (BNM) are based to the south of Lisbon, across the river Tejo. The crew started as a family affair with Kolt and his uncle DJ Joker around 2008. Noronha (Kolt's brother) and Perigoso joined a year later. While Joker since then pursued other avenues in life, all three remaining members committed themselves to the game they had chosen when still dancing to the deejays they admired: be the best deejays and producers they could be. The record opens with "Batidongoo", an earlier track by Kolt and Noronha. Tense, spanking percussion and electronic tones, sounds like slower funaná crossed with the rudiments of kuduro; we think this one opens new ground; Next up, DJ Perigoso drops "Macobayou", a fast, futuristic batida track with plenty of drums to hang on to (or lose yourself to); "Assabakuse" keeps the pace and adds emotion in the form of clipped guitar, the actual ruler of melody in here. It becomes irresistible in no time; Side B begins by spreading pure love. "We Send This" does sound like a gift to us listeners. Closer to house in tempo, this one reflects classic African music, sure, but also a synthetic, modern type of R&B sound in its layers of ambience. Short, direct, beautiful; "Perseguição" (translates as "Chase") soundtracks a run through the jungle, over fallen trees, branches, around big rocks and in sight of wild animals. What a ride; "Comandante Em Chefe" has an undulating melodic hook occupying the whole duration of the song. Again, like slowed-down funaná accordion and it rises clearly above the usual complex percussive layers. It later gains even more artificial tones and echoes. Alien rumba for ballroom dance matinées.

MixMag listed Chapa Quente as their 2016 April Dubstep/Grime Album Of The Month, giving it a 9/10 rating."Lead single '2685' is a euphoric interweaving of 1990's techno, dangerously speeding flute melodies and an artillery of drums firing like automatic weapons. Needless to say, it's unique." --The Wire"Few songs feel more like being catapulted through the air at tremendous velocity." --Pitchfork on "2685""Yet this is the miracle of Marfox. His ability to shift time and space is unsurpassed. We knew he was one to watch in 2011, yet now it's 2016 and I wouldn't dare my eyes or ears away for a minute. But it's his uptempo cuts like 'Cobra Preta' that make Marfox such a vital artist, one whose potential has only begun to be revealed." --Vinyl Me, Please"Chapa Quente might be modestly sized, but it's a very satisfying piece of work. 2016 release. DJ Nervoso's self-titled release on Príncipe."It's incredible how Nervoso and many of his compatriots seem to be able to make challenging fascinating and unexpected dance music from the simplest of ingredients." --Cyclic Defrost"He's barely bothered to process his hits, there's a minimum happening at any point, and somehow the result is hard, knocking dance music that could wake the dead. If you're getting sick of fussy production and tracks built from tricks more than ideas, Nervoso is the antidote." --The Ransom Note"Much of batida's appeal is its hyped energy, but some of the deepest grooves here draw from the slower, sexier pace of tarraxinha. It's inspiring to hear how a keen sense of syncopation can do so much with so little." --Resident Advisor"Much of the album operates in this modular style of propulsive, lucid minimalism. Nervoso generates drama by varnishing and stripping layers of syncopation and texture from his tracks, revealing works that have been sheared to the bone, sinew and rhythm replacing melody and flesh. These are virulent, mutant dance tracks." --Tiny Mix Tapes

NIAGARA Sao Joao Baptista LP
2016 release. Niagara started 2016 firmly committed to their own Ascender label, having released a first 12" late in 2015. A string of stellar CDRs guaranteed their relevant (and private) output became available outside their studio. The consistency is such that it was no effort selecting four additional tracks to assemble a third EP on Príncipe. Opener "Asa" is strong on keys, suggests a cool jazz walkabout where the machines and other instruments seem to be jamming together without interference. This broadens the horizon of whoever thought they are a house band; As countless other dance tracks, "IV" is built around a steady kickdrum, supporting a succession of vibes hitting left and right, obeying only the illogical architecture of Niagara's sonic world; "Amarelo" is the longest track in the set. Very physical and expansive beats, a funky guitar groove, deep bass tones and it ends just like that. A cascading drum machine holds its own, then comes a wandering flute and passing waves as jets in the sky. Trippy and brilliant, "Laranja" changes coordinates and points to a fresh destination."The trio's house music remains deeply eccentric, though, its sonorities bright and its rhythms ramshackle. Their third EP for the label, São João Baptista, a scrawl of clapped-out drums and spidery guitars, highlights their idiosyncrasies. Sonically, the trio have found new ways to make the analogue and the electronic sit well together; stylistically, their mutant-funk tendencies are given freer rein." --Resident Advisor

VA Firma Do Txiga 3x7"
2017 release. Txiga means something like "come close" and that takes you to the heart of the matter. Although especially apparent in the tarraxo style they are so connected to, the expression reveals unbounded enthusiasm for music, taken from the roots up, wherever the feeling projects it to. And so Príncipe felt this crew had to come across in a special way. Three seven" records, one for each of the main producers represent three branches of the same tree. Features K30, DJ NinOo, and Puto Anderson.

DJ LYCOX Sonhos & Pesadelos LP
2017 release. It is now possible to see a big picture. This means there is a timeline with enough years and developments since this sound emerged on its own. Lycox is of course part of a newer generation that keeps adding to the transmission, but he is already inspiring a younger set of producers. Sonhos & Pesadelos helps materialize a multiverse of bold, shiny chrome architecture, staying true to the original kuduro backbone while Lycox organizes new forms, song structures and even artificial life. If you can't call it "raw" it's only because this is mental space translated into sound. The physicality of the music is but one element in Lycox's ambitious take on dance music, although we should really say pop music, such is the melodic and harmonic forces at work. "Solteiro" could be just an ambient beauty but the abnormally long four-minute mark reveals layers of masterful song crafting well outside what some might still be tempted to classify as "ethnic". Not a classic seaside romance. Features PuTo NeLo, Puto WilsoN, and MIX-BwÉ."His ear for odd melodies suits his bright palette, which maintains pop intrigue while remaining unconventional, intriguing and occasionally confusing." --Resident Advisor"He might have the sharpest ear for melody of all the Príncipe crew, too, often prioritising catchy tunes over complex drumwork, but that doesn't mean it's not tough - the midsection is full of heavy bass and drums, peaking with 'Quarteto Fantástico', a track as bug-eyed and disorienting anything we've heard from DJ Marfox or DJ Nigga Fox." --The Wire"'Solteiro' is an uncharacteristically gentle and pulsating tune that feels -- more than anything -- romantic in its rhythm. Truth be told, it's quite beautiful. And it follows lots and lots and lots of heretofore phenomenal music from the label." --Tiny Mix Tapes

MORROW, CHARLIE Toot! Too LP
Recital present the first vinyl LP by composer/event-maker Charlie Morrow. Toot! Too culls performance recordings from 1970 to 2014. It focuses on his "Wave Music" series, which are compositions based around swarms of like-instruments; i.e. sixty clarinets, conch choruses, and army of drums and bugle horns, etc. The 1978 piece, "100 Musicians With Lights", was performed at dusk in Central Park. One hundred players (brass, reeds, percussion) congregate and march in spiral formations, playing their instrument with penlights attached to them. The piece dissipates and ends as each player marches through the park to their respective homes. The sound is fascinating; a tape recording made by an audience member swirling and dancing through the performance. Charlie is an organizer: one of instruments, with the pieces that landed on this LP and dozens more; one of events, through decades of public solstice celebrations across the world; one of publications, including New Wilderness Audiographics and EAR Magazine; and, one of friendships as Charlie has kindly introduced me to many fascinating players in this quirky game of ours. He views networking as an art form, always connecting friends with other friends, building a larger web for everyone to dance throughout. Label owner Sean McCann on the release: "In working on this LP over the past years, Charlie Morrow and I have become close. It has been a joy to have him in my life. At the age of 73, he is determined and creative and as positive as ever. Each time we speak, new projects arise -- like a mysterious soup boiling up fresh aromas. One of my favorite memories with Charlie was us staying up 'til the wee small hours of the morning drinking a bottle of sweet potato shochu, me listening to him tell funny and poignant remembrances. I am happy to share these lovely recordings, just a pinky toe in his artistic footprint, but wow, such a gorgeous toe!" Includes 20-page, 8.5x11" color booklet with scores, writings, and photographs; Includes download coupon; Edition of 500.

SMALLPEOPLE Salty Days 2LP
2018 repress. Gatefold 2LP version. "It would be a waltz to call Salty Days just a treaty of deep house. But it is much more than just that. The co-owners of Hamburg's most gentle record store and label Smallville -- Just von Ahlefeld and Julius Steinhoff aka Smallpeople -- wouldn't be the romanticists they are, if it were that simple. The debut album from Smallpeople not only honors and delves into a sound that already peaked some 15 years ago, it also hones and elevates it, without ever falling into the Reynoldsmania trap or being old gold retold. And this is all oh-so-clear from the very start: the fine flutes of 'When It's There' go straight to your heart and they do so without any self-mockery or hipster smiles as much as the gasping 303-sounds, chirping birds and healing DX-like bass sounds a few tracks later do. 'Salty Days' -- an allusion not to grim times, but to a certain member's adoration for the crystalline mineral -- is blessed with a coherence and tradition that isn't leaden and a feeling that is pure. Like a distillate of U.S. innovations and the European backfire on it, Smallpeople tell their personal love story and jump to their own conclusions. 'Move With Your Vision' and 'Black Ice' both concentrate the form and content of this album: house music that knows its roots, past and classicism, but is made with the minds and means of today. In the '90s there was the saying that it's impossible to create an album consisting of house music and house music only (those dreary downbeat experiments still haunt us to this day). Salty Days is an ideal that belies that statement." --Gerd Janson

Mastertape sound, including an insert with photos and extensive liner-notes by Richard Allen. "... A pure, simple, thought-provoking, frightening and uplifting collection, it evoked timeless themes of environmental concern, spiritual surrender, natural wonderment, doubt and love all woven into a sparse yet entirely original acoustic folk sound." --Richard Allen (Freak Emporium)

IRUOJE, ODION Down To Earth LP
2016 release. The only self-titled LP released by Nigeria's number-one producer of the 1970s and early '80s, "Sound President" Odion Iruoje. Originally produced on his own label Odion Ltd and released in 1983, this over-looked and obscure LP was originally only ever distributed in small numbers back in the early 1980s. Iruoje is credited as being the man who signed Fela Kuti to EMI Nigeria and produced all of Fela's revolutionary early material from 1970-73. He also signed and produced most of the great body of Nigerian material on the EMI label including BLO, Mono-Mono, Tunji Oyelana (who adds vocals on this LP), Ofege, Geraldo Pino, Sonny Okosuns, and many more. Part disco, part Nigerian rap, Afro-funk, and Juju, it's a unique and at times eccentric blend of Nigerian music that certainly deserves another look after all these years.

SKENET Morsning LP
Skenet stands for the renewal of the genre folk rock and takes it to places it's never been! This is the long-awaited follow-up to their much-acclaimed debut album of stellar new electric instrumental folk rock, Allting rullar (SUBL 105CD/104LP, 2015). On their new album Morsning, Skenet establish their sound and reputation as one of Sweden's premier folk rock band and offers a unique mix of dirty riffs and Swedish fiddler traditions -- on the border between tradition and innovation. A folk psychedelic Led Zeppelin meets the legacy of Swedish fiddle culture -- in the gray zone between a pat on the cheek and a knock-out. With the help of the celebrated producer Mikael Herrström (Thåström, Popsicle, Weeping Willows, Ane Brun, etc.) behind the mixer desk, Morsning takes you closer to the raw, energetic sound that became Skenet's signum. Most of the songs on Morsning are written by the siblings Staffan and Lena Jonsson, who are both legitimate "Riks-spelmän" (National Swedish Fiddlers). Staffan and Lena have also performed as special guest musicians with many musical constellations including Dungen, for example. Since the release of the previous album, Skenet has been touring all over Scandinavia and Europe Sweden, including performances at some of the largest folk music festivals in Europe. They will tour even more around this new release. If you dig progressive psych and folk rock, this is definitely for you. Edition of 500.A few words from Skenet: "Every mile in the tour bus has given us a chance to write and play much more together. The Morsning album is the result of what we want to say more than anything else right now! We are hugely proud!"

Sascha Borchardt (aka Monoloc) will start a label, Unterland, with Storyline EP. The label will serve as a vehicle through which the German producer takes a step away from the club environment by presenting experimental, minimalist, and atmospheric sonic interpretations. The collaborative EP by Monoloc and Beauty Of Inconsequenz contains eight tracks that are based heavily on field recordings; the sound is dark and deeply atmospheric with dubstep influences. While distanced somewhat from the 4/4 format, the tracks are cerebral and hypnotic.
