DIXON, BILL Odyssey 6CD BOX
2001 release. Odyssey is the definitive compendium of solo trumpet music by Bill Dixon, as compiled by the artist. Dixon (1925-2010) was known primarily for his small and large ensemble masterpieces of the decades between Intents and Purposes (1967) and Tapestries (2009). While he appeared infrequently in solo performances, he was continually evolving in studio through these years a remarkably nuanced and powerful solo music -- especially during the mid-1970s, as a counterpart to daily work with student orchestras on large ensemble pieces. Small offerings of these solo gems were published relatively obscurely in the early 1980s in Italy, and a larger batch were hand selected by the composer for a two-LP collection in 1985. In 2000, Dixon gathered into Odyssey the entirety of his oeuvre for solo trumpet, adding more than two hours of further solo pieces, and a small number of additional duet recordings. The tracks were selected and sequenced by Mr. Dixon, who curated the entire project for release on his own label, Archive Edition. Veteran engineer Kevin Reeves (Capitol, Universal; Grammy-nominated for Revenant (2015) work) mastered from original tapes exclusively, deriving unprecedented clarity on these exquisite recordings. The set spans five CDs of trumpet solos and one full disc of Dixon's enigmatic spoken commentary for the project. Two printed folios are also in the box: In one are further emphatic annotations by Dixon ensemble veterans Stephen Horenstein and Jason Zappa, and historian Ben Young; and the Dixon interview with journalist Graham Taylor-Lock. A second full-color folio Works on Paper reproduces 13 of Dixon's stunning ink and acrylic visual creations, mostly from the late 1990s, and unpublished prior to this set. Recordings span 1970-92, made primarily in Dixon's studio In Bennington, Vermont, with earlier examples from New York, and a later solo performance from Israel. Also included are Dixon's only released works for solo piano, the full set of "Relay" duets for his own piano and trumpet, an excerpt of the 1971 magnum opus "Summerdance", featuring drummers Laurence Cook and David Moss, and one preferred example of the duets with keyboardist Leslie Winston. Odyssey was released in 2001 -- assembled on the highest artistic level, according to Bill Dixon's production standards. It also has been subject to DIY distribution since that time, so in many ways this 2018 re-launch will be a first hearing for many.

SUN RA AND HIS INTERGALACTIC MYTH SCIENCE SOLAR ARKESTRA On Jupiter (2018 Repress) LP
2018 repress. Originally released in 1979. A mixture of live recording and studio post-production, On Jupiter sounds unique to any other album Sun Ra made. The Arkestra reflects a disco pulse right back on itself and delivers one of the most cohesive albums of their career. The title track is a masterpiece of gentle atonal harmony, while "UFO" pushes along at a cracking disco-like pace with fierce brass and spacey dub effects. This is a timeless Ra classic.

MADBEN Frequence(s) CD
Since his emergence in 2010, Madben's melodic, Detroit-inspired techno evolved, with various releases on Caduceus, Astropolis Records, Off Recordings, Inflyte, and Bedrock. Nowadays, the Paris-based artist remains a key figure in France's new generation of techno producers, with an upcoming debut LP on Astropolis Records. Swinging from atmospheric sounds to techno, Madben produces an alchemy of rave anthems, hardware material and groovy, emotional music. With support from France's favorite Laurent Garnier, Manu Le Malin, and Rebekah Warrior, Fréquence(s) unveils his skillful, mature universe. The opening track "Space Bubbles" carries a cinematic, ethereal touch designed for dancefloor, from dusk till dawn. "Mouvement Circulaire" sets out a slow hypnotic rhythm, leading to "Narcotica" and its warm melodies. "MG's Groove", produced with master Laurent Garnier uncovers Madben's house moves, percussive beats, and distorted synths. "Reminiscence" and "Stripes" wink at Madben's earlier melodic techno imprints, while "Don't Lose The Beat" uses old school vocal as the LP's boiling point. Modern techno vision is underlined with tracks such as "Tom & Tom" and "The Struggle", both waving between UK inspirations, aerial sounds, and Ben's original signature. Featuring Manu Le Malin and Rebekah Warrior, "Grief, Dance To Death" stands out from the rest, swaying betwixt French vocals and rave spirit, whereas the album's last piece, "Lunar Park", ends the journey with a gripping ethereal melody.

CHAO, MANU Clandestino 2LP+CD
2018 repress. Originally released in 1998. Gatefold double LP with a CD copy of the album. "The first solo album released by the former frontman of Mano Negra, Clandestino is an enchanting trip through Latin-flavored worldbeat rock, reliant on a potpourri of musical styles from traditional Latin and salsa to dub to rock 'n' roll to French pop to experimental rock to techno... Just about every track has odd sampled bits from what sound like pirate radio-station broadcasts (a possible link to the title). There are so many great ideas on this record that it's difficult to digest in one listen, but multiple plays reveal the great depth of Manu Chao's artistry." --All Music Guide

SHACKS, THE Haze LP
LP version. "Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming one of the year's big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, Haze, solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz. When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistry lies at the heart of Haze, a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band's debut. Produced together by Shrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who's played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, and countless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager's basement and Michels' Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed 'the Shangri La of Soul.' Haze opens with the title track, which is, appropriately enough, the first song Shrager and Wise ever wrote together. It's a spare, smoky tune that shimmers and sparkles as it shifts in and out of focus, and it's an ideal gateway into the immersive world of The Shacks. On the breezy 'Follow Me,' they channel the infectious charm of a 60's girl group, while the soulful 'My Name Is' grooves its way through a mesmerizing take on 70's funk. Much like a dream, the songs often merge the familiar and the unfamiliar, constructing their own psychedelic reality full of beauty and yearning, all fueled by Wise's breathy vocals and the unmistakable electricity of a wildly creative band truly inhabiting their music. 'Birds' makes brilliant use of Daptone drum hero Homer Steinwess's impeccable feel behind the kit, while the 50's ballad-meets-baroque pop of 'Cryin'' tips its cap to Roy Orbison and John Lennon as Shrager takes over lead vocals, and the soulful shuffle of 'Texas' belies a dark and violent undercurrent ripped from the headlines. Through it all permeates an unshakable sense that this is a group performing just for you. 'Nobody' finds the Shacks re-interpreting Phil Spector's Wagnerian approach to rock & roll, complete with sweeping strings and darkly innocent lyrics. The 13 songs featured on Haze plays out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty. In the short time that they've been together, The Shacks have already made an impressive mark. Their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies' 'This Strange Effect' soundtracked a global iPhone commercial, one which actually stars Wise herself, and their self-titled EP earned the band dates with St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Chicano Batman, and their Big Crown Records labelmates Lee Fields & The Expressions."

CHAPMAN, MICHAEL Live VPRO 1971 CD
For a self-confessed "journeyman" musician who has spent most of his 50-year career on the road live, Michael Chapman albums are curiously rare items and it's even harder to find one his earlier years. This one, recorded by Dutch "hippie" station "VPRO" in May 1971 is the earliest known live recording so far discovered of Michael Chapman after he started releasing records on the legendary Harvest label in 1969. This period is for Chapman fans of the classic period. A beautiful clear, warm and intimate recording of Chapman duetting with long-time collaborator Rick Kemp on electric bass of which documents material from all three albums in a free-flowing improv-inflected style. It is with this free-flowing vibe in mind that Blast First Petite have included the complete 90-minute concert via a download code so listeners can experience the whole set. Chapman sounds in a confident, gentle, and relaxed mood. The audience is initially tentative, possibly unfamiliar with Chapman's work but they gradually warm up to his complex, dexterous, "not folk" playing. The recordings make for a fascinating snapshot of the time, with a loose and open approach that offers a rare chance for guitar buffs to eavesdrop between songs on some those bespoke Chapman guitar tunings.

JC SATAN Centaur Desire CD
You can count on the fingers of one hand the bands you've loved up until their fifth album like J.C. Satàn -- almost ten years after falling in love. There are dudes who have "seen them too much", heard them too much, and stopped expecting anything from them anymore. The Satàn crew did not deliver a fifth album just for the hell of it, just to justify their next tour: they got together to seek the rare fuel, the miraculous current able to galvanize our sleeping senses, the electroshock forcing us to revive the urgent impression of being alive. Centaur Desire has something of a new first-time record -- recorded all together (Arthur and Dorian used to handle all instruments themselves), enhanced by an incredibly powerful sonority (gear has piled up over the last years), and filled with a new groove (Romain finally plays his drum parts, and it's fantastic). Never where you'd expect it, Paula's voice adds to the pervading climate of freshness. A formula had to be found, that combines an undeniable talent for composition with devastating live fury. Here it is, and some of this on-stage gold stabilized to get cut on record and reproduced endlessly until reaching our speakers. If the modern-era Nicholas Flamel extracting this yellow metal out of peat was called Josh Homme or Black Rebel Something, the whole world would be murmuring the ecstasy of court's flatterers. At a time when the aforementioned bigwigs are composing a supposedly magnum umpteenth opus that smacks a lot of schlock, J.C. Satàn release something that dashes all of them with the cheerfulness of freaks and the Rabelaisian, farcical mirth of a horny centaur inviting us to Pan's great farandole, in the setting of a Manowar sleeve. "Centaur Desire!" declaims a sonorous voice on the title song, just like one would invoke some demon/leviathan to lay low an army of muddy killer whales by hitting them with burning dildos. Like a superlative life, an explosion of springtime sap accompanying the great universal libidinous rush that seizes us in the cosmic shag or in the mosh pit. No doubt the fact that this fifth album is their best one to date is quite uncommon and leads one to wonder.

ESTARDY, BERNARD Bernard Estardy's Space Oddities 1970-1982 CD
A master of the mixing board from the late '60s until the '90s, Bernard Estardy was the wizard of French musical recordings. As head of CBE studios, he shaped everything from Gérard Manset's concept albums to Claude François's hit singles, Françoise Hardy's delicate tear-jerkers and Michel Sardou's soul-stirrers. This "giant" had his hand in the whole range of mainstream French music by making his studio a veritable playground for experimentation. His legendary album La Formule du Baron, released in 1969, and the eight LPs of production music he made between 1974 and 1978 for Tele Music are vivid proof. Born Bad Records present Bernard Estardy's Space Oddities 1970-1982, a collection of his work. CD version includes a 16-page booklet with text in English and French. DIE WILDE JAGD Uhrwald Orange CD
The Uhrwald ("Clockwood") -- a place of dreams and sounds, with its own sense of time. Channeled into his band Die Wilde Jagd, Sebastian Lee Philipp's obsession for this place unleashes a uniquely spellbinding project of minimalist, tenebrous intensity. Recorded in the studio which lends its name to the sophomore album, Uhrwald Orange weaves a dense, atmospheric web of drama, romance, ecstasy, and melancholy. Die Wilde Jagd released their debut album in 2015 (BB 203CD/LP) when Philipp teamed up with producer Ralf Beck (Nalin & Kane, Unit 4). Beck excused himself from "daily business" shortly afterwards, but he retains an important influence on the new LP: Not only did he co-produce and mix the tracks (joined by Australian producer Kris Baha in the final mixdown process), but his collection of vintage analog synthesizers, drum computers, and studio equipment gives Die Wilde Jagd's music its unique, dexterously crafted character. Philipp locked himself in Beck's Uhrwald Orange studio for nights on end to transfer sonic interpretations of his world of images to tape: a nocturnal flight into the subconscious, into a strange world ("Fremde Welt") where ghostly creatures reside -- acid horses, bat boys, 2000 elephants ("Säuregäule", "Flederboy", "2000 Elefanten"). Flemish artist Frans Snyder (1579-1657) provides inspiration with his painting "Animals of the Night" as does the 14th-century collection of songs "Llibre Vermell de Montserrat". Philipp's repetitive electronic sequences include Mediterranean mandolins, psychedelic bass/guitar loops, Georgian choirs, and rattling North African krakebs. Medieval church music mixes with European folklore and improvised jams on this aural journey through the Orient and Occident -- from dark Nordic woods to the Eastern dawn. Philipp offers an insight into his hermetic world of ideas on eight tracks, enriched by sounds of nature captured on a trip through Portugal. Uhrwald Orange is, of course, also Philipp's ode to the recording studio itself, to the analog gear and the ubiquitous EMT Plate reverb. This is where he could realize the sound he imagined, all within Beck's own framework of compressors, preamps and signal paths. Philipp on his work in the studio: "I want to make the equipment in the studio sing, build a world of sound in which every tone, every effect has its own voice. . . . Every element can be found amongst the dwellers and natural forces of the 'Clockwood Orange'."

TRYAD If Only You Believe In Lovin' LP
Restocked, new lower price. Del Val Records present a reissue of Tryad's If Only You Believe In Lovin', originally released in 1971 as a private press. Ultra-deluxe LP reissue on the newly resurrected Del Val label -- obscure but legendary label previously responsible for early editions by The Brigade, The Bachs, Bent Wind, D.R. Hooker, Fifty Foot Hose, etc. Long overdue and much delayed reissue of this 1971 NYC private press few have heard and less have seen. Comparable to the best UK folk-fusion LPs of the era, this is like a Yankee version of Hunter Muskett's great Every Time You Move (1970) with co-ed vocals plus bass/drums/pedal steel/flute/keys accompaniment and East Coast haunted not West Coast hip, though you'll be reminded of a certain revered private from out there that wouldn't exist for another five years: Relatively Clean Rivers. Comes with a four page lyric insert and the cover is what they were made like fifty years ago."Low key but really cool. Hard to believe it's an NYC piece from '72 from a sonic aspect. There's a kind of innocence to overall heft that puts me in mind of very early Bay Area stuff, like the second We Five LP (1967). That same sort of psych-is-hanging-unnamed-in-the-background vibe. The only thing that really places it in the '70s is that pedal steel which has a definite post-Sneaky-Pete feel. Very cool." --Byron Coley

EMERALD WEB/SAM MCLOUGHLIN & ALISON COOPER Garden Of Mirrors / Supernatural Lancashire Volume Two LP
2013 release. Warehouse find. The ongoing Disposable Music library subscription series is a series which pools some of the best emotive, comprehensive, previously unavailable instrumental music from the unmarked archives of experimental artists within the expanding Finders Keepers family and presents it as a series of limited uniformed archival vinyl discs. With unlimited entry to the archives belonging to names like Ciani, Spoerri, Rollin, Epple, Korzynski, and Massey, Disposable Music have taken the best in unadulterated, underexposed and unattached mood music and given these homeless compositions a place, purpose and time to thrive. The archive of Kat Epple in Miami is a well-preserved timeline that documents early analog experimental synth modules and the development of Silicon Valley music technology into the 1980s and beyond. It also includes a wealth of music produced and manufactured with her partner, synthesis, and flautist Bob Stohl. The Garden Of Mirrors is a collection of music made for ethereal planetarium performances and a series of laser shows which earned the duo of Kat and Bob the collective moniker of Emerald Web. These multi-purpose recordings remastered from rare tapes typify the duo's unique ambient sound that would win them a firm fixture in the hearts of a generation of new age devotees and proto-techno enthusiasts who operated and survived outside the parameters of the major music industry that dominated the era. Distributed by mail, during concerts, or in health food and book stores the privately pressed instrumental music of Emerald Web would also make its way in the films of astronomer Carl Sagan and other natural history educational programs. Here you will find a span of sythesizer soundscapes ranging from keyboards, Lyricon wind synths, modular synths, digital sequencers, and organic percussion. Following one of the most requested titles on the first Disposable Music collection Sam Mcloughlin and Alison Cooper's Supernatural Lancashire 2 brings a wide selection of self-made acoustic and electronic instruments to their Northern rehearsal room to blend semi-improvised melody and syncopated mechanical folk -- evoking sonic images of bygone rural industry, religious corruption, hallucinogenic medicines, scenes from classic pastoral UK horror films and cautionary European fakelore. Composing the type of instrumental music that simply does not exist outside of a theatrical or cinematic brief the self-initiated and tightly twisted music of Supernatural Lancashire comes from a genuine creative place which is rarely explored with such beguiling results within the oft blinkered parameters of modern handmade music.

SPOERRI/MASSONIX, BRUNO Hommage Au Fromage / Hollingsville LP
Hommage Au Frommage is perhaps one of the best titles to have ever been in a dusty box of a quarter inch tape reel. However, without a crumb of irony the music that appears on this session also ranks highly in Finders Keepers list of archival triumphs. An early '70s conceptual jazz pop album combining dulcimers, harps, a Jew's harp and what sounds like a tap dancer instantly earns itself its own protective niche shared only by certain vintage recordings by Vladimir Cosma and The Roundtable -- but when accentuated by a heavy weight back beat and the added information that it was commissioned by the national Swiss Cheese Consortium this record commands further inspection and repeat listens. Starting with all the traits of a moody Morricone or Bruno Nicolai giallo soundtrack and breaking into a healthy cross section of modal jazz, tape manipulation, electronic grinds, Brazilian accordion, and (dare it be said) b-boy break beats, Hommage Au Frommage by Swiss electronic jazz pioneer Bruno Spoerri is a record quite unlike anything else. The music found on Graham Massey's Hollingsville record was originally created for a twelve-part radio series on Resonance 104.4 FM. The series, Hollingsville, was conceived and presented by writer Ken Hollings and would focus each week on a different aspect of man's historical relationship with technology. Informal discussions with a series of specially invited guests were accompanied by custom-built theme tunes by Massey, His approach was intentionally leaning toward the Bakelite and hot valve nostalgia of some forgotten Expo or World's Fair. The resulting Hollingsville soundtrack exercises Massey's authentic knowledge of original analog machines in their rawest form and triumphantly draws comparisons with the likes of Henk Badings, Oscar Sala, and Kid Balton from the pre-synth era of electric keyboards and tape manipulation. "Neptune" features Seaming To.

Jelinek might as well have sampled a horn player's hissing intake of breath - it would have been 'jazz' enough for his purposes." --The Wire"It's a perfect inversion of conventional music, a sonic negative. Everything that would typically be foreground is moved back or pushed off the screen altogether, and the flecks of sonic debris that would normally be covered by other sounds are left to carry the melody and rhythm." --Pitchfork"All you need to know is that these onomatopoeic non-specific songs . . . are warm, paradisiacal creations." --NME"Listen carefully and you'll hear textures slowly unfolding and mutating. Instead, Jelinek chooses to explore the visual effect moiré - two shifting patterns creating an implied third dimension - in the audio realm." --Alternative Press"The title acts as explanation for the studio technique that provided the basis for this album, snippets of other people's arrangements deconstructed through a sampler into loops and then splashed onto an audio canvas." --ATM"Jelinek's sound evolved out of his dislike for (and inability to play) keyboards." --RPM"Jelinek has abstracted his sources beyond recognition, looping his millisecond samples into flickering patterns of sonic moiré laid atop a dub techno framework. . . . Presuming you've not fallen asleep of course." --iDJ"At times, it's all a bit dripping tap Japanese water torture; so sedentary it drowns in its own motionlessness" --DJ"Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records is a genuine modern classic whose re-release is anything but a cynical mortgage repayment exercise. Consider this a second chance, then pretend you had it all along." --Boomkat

GAINSBOURG & JEAN-CLAUDE VANNIER, SERGE Les Chemins De Katmandou LP
2018 repress. After decades in the making, Finders Keepers present the first-ever pressing of Serge Gainsbourg's most elusive and coveted soundtrack studio recordings, co-written, arranged, and orchestrated by the genius Jean-Claude Vannier (the arranger behind 1971's Histoire De Melody Nelson) during what many consider to be the dynamic duo's most definitive creative period. Believed to have been lost in a studio fire by Gainsbourg enthusiasts for over forty years (a myth that also shrouds Morricone's lost Danger Diabolik soundtrack), the misplaced master-tapes for the drug-fueled/Mai 68 cash-in/road-movie Les Chemins De Katmandou (1969) have been widely considered the final audio jigsaw piece in an immaculate discography/filmography, thus earning this soundtrack bona fide holy grail status amongst the most avid disc detectives. Featuring the original crack team of Paris based players now recognized as French library music royalty, this album epitomizes the inimitable musical direction and expert psychedelic pop musicianship that graced classic Gainsbourg/Vannier soundtracks like La Horse (1970), Cannabis (1970), and Sex Shop (1972), the sound that laid the stylistic, future-proof foundations for subsequent decades of forward-thinking Gallic funk mastery. Comprising Vannier's signature recipe of thick plucked bass lines, close-mic'd drums, biting clavinet, and Eastern influenced strings and percussion (and a sprinkling of subtle traditional French instrumentation) the soundtrack to Les Chemins De Katmandou ("The Road To Katmandu", or "The Pleasure Pit") captures Vannier and Gainsbourg in the first year of their creative partnership capturing their unique embryonic energy. The music on this record contains the full extent of the music found on the newly discovered studio tapes. It has since been preserved through the "baking" process, re-emulsified, transferred, remastered, and recompiled and sequenced in accordance with the original screenplay in close collaboration with Finders Keepers and inaugural artist, Jean-Claude Vannier.

HANNETT & STEVE HOPKINS, MARTIN All Sorts Of Heroes 7"
From the shrapnel of the unlikely collision point where Mancunian post-punk royalty collides with sci-fi cinema and art house animation, this obscurity shines a new light on the Northern DIY era providing disc detectives with a whole new punk funk perspective. Recorded in 1976 by Invisible Girls' Steve Hopkins and Martin Hannett for a stop-motion animation called All Sorts Of Heroes, this hard-edged funk instrumental theme reveals another side to this versatile production team joining the hidden dots between Hannett's own discoid experiments with ESG, Gyro, A Certain Ratio, and the mythical Afro Express recordings from the same year.

MAP 71 Gloriosa CD
Brighton's Map 71 are a duo comprised of Andy Pyne (percussion, electronics) and Lisa Jayne (words, voice). Together they have been working away at an approach that draws from post-punk, improvisation, electronics, and other such realms of music to create a refreshing environment where reflection, wry observations, the abstract, and immersion can develop. They have existed for a few years now and had several releases out both on their own Foolproof Projects imprint and via a couple of other labels. Gloriosa itself is a reissue of a very limited cassette album released by Fourth Dimension Records in 2017 but included here are six bonus tracks previously issued on a CDr and cassette album. Map 71's songs aren't really songs. They dispense with melody and the verse/chorus structure for an intentional disconnect between Lisa Jayne's delivery and Andy Pyne's beats. Lisa Jayne doesn't have to shout or accentuate her proclamations, observations and confessions; it's the rhythms that provide movement here. It's not always poetry either. And while the electronics revel in comparisons with the proto-electronic sound of Suicide and the rhythms of Z'ev, they're just as likely to co-opt the electro beats of techno.

SONIDO GALLO NEGRO Mambo Cosmico CD
Hailing from Mexico City, Sonido Gallo Negro's exhilarating third album, Mambo Cósmico, continues their exploration into the psychedelic richness and rhythmic pulse of Amazonian cumbia while at the same reaching for new sounds and textures -- such as mambo, cha cha, porro and danzon. Filled with frenetic, red-hot identities, and sonorities, Mambo Cósmico galvanizes the international reputation Sonido Gallo Negro has earned through their powerful concerts and their earlier records -- Cumbia Salvaje (2011) and Sendero Místico (GB 015CD/LP, 2014). Mambo Cósmico is a sonic collage that is not only musical, but also cultural and historical. This combo of nine musicians, seek out a new and unexpected musical cosmos that goes beyond their well-honed Mexican and Latin American influences. Their navigational charts point towards an additional synchronicity of sound and imagination with the Middle East, the Hispanic old world, and Africa, as embedded within the Americas. Of the eleven tracks included on Mambo Cósmico, nine are group originals, "Tolú" by Lucho Bermúdez and "¿Quién Será?" by Pablo Beltrán Ruiz being the only cover versions. Also, for the first time some of these pieces include vocals and group choruses. HIS NAME IS ALIVE Black Wings 2LP
"His Name Is Alive archive of lost vocals, shadowy choirs, fuzzed upside down, prog melodies flipped & reversed in a 2xLP. Black Wings was originally designed as a collection of outtakes, demos and experiments, combining beautifully layered acapella vocal harmonies with heavy fuzz riffs and sci-fi soundtrack synths, and was included in the Patterns of Light limited edition super set (2016) but quickly grew in stature and attracted attention as a fundamentally unique stand-alone release. Black Wings is 30-song cosmic double album housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and collages an insane variety of styles including psychedelic rock, new age meditation, medieval choral, and the protometal prog of early Rush and Hawkwind, while lyrically covering heavily researched creation myths, visionary theology, particle physics, dragons and some feelings about the fundamental forces of nature and witchcraft. Black Wings is His Name is Alive's 101th release since their first cassette in 1986. HNIA spent 13 years recording for the legendary British label 4AD and in that time sold 100,000+ records, toured the world, received gold and platinum records for soundtracking Tom Cruise's nervous breakdown in the movie Jerry Maguire and collaborated on two short films with famed animators the Quay Brothers. Described variously by the press as 'Absolutely beautiful' (CMJ), 'A silver thread out of the labyrinth' (NME), 'Moody, ethereal' (Trouser Press), 'Lo-fi freakouts' (XL8R) and 'Haunted, wholly out of time or context' (Plan B), His Name Is Alive continues to mystify with its longstanding tradition of bedroom dream pop experimentation."

NEBULA Let It Burn CD
Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Nebula's Let It Burn, originally released in 1998. Eddie Glass and Ruben Romano (ex-Fu Manchu) have put together one of the most sonically aural music obliterations ever put down on tape. Along with Queens of the Stone Age and Eternal Elysium, Nebula were one of the most pleasant surprises in the stoner rock movement. To call them another stoner rock band is an injustice to their versatility and dynamism. Nebula experiments with different types of sounds, including the raga piece "Raga In The Bloodshot Pyramid". Arguably one of the best white-played ragas, besides the Northwood Improvisers' phenomenal Star Garden, the song offers a refreshing change from the average fuzz-infested rock tune. The guitars are brash, loud, covered in mud, and loaded with crotch-kickin' feedback. The interplay of the drums and bass and the extended guitar jam on the aptly titled "Sonic Titan" is one of several highlights on Let It Burn. There is no dead weight here. This is especially true of the bonus tracks, which include the rawest, most brilliant song on the album, "Devil's Liquid". If you are a fan of the genre, or just Fu Manchu, then put down your bong and Black Sabbath vinyl long enough to go out and find yourself this masterpiece. The first six songs were recorded at Rancho de la Luna, Joshua Tree, CA May 1997, engineered by Fred Drake and mastered by John Golden. The last two were recorded at LoHo Studios, New York, NY June 1998, engineered by Joe Hogan and mastered by Dave Shirk at Sonorous Mastering, Tempe, AZ.

AVON Dave's Dungeon LP
LP version. Dave's Dungeon boldly follows Avon's first LP Mad Marco (2016) with a marked progression, rawness, defiance and it certainly packs a punch. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by James Childs, the group is on fire. "Yello" kicks off the album clearly showing the band's roots in punk rock delivered with an "in your face" clarity. Meanwhile "Terraformations" settles you into a machine like "robot rock" ride, immediately providing the listener with classic Hernandez drums and Childs's distinctive guitar style bound with solid bass riffing from Pasarell that tells a story of human conquest. Next in line is more "in your face" punk rock about personal memories gigging at the "Red Barn" that is a famous venue in the California desert. "Hero With A Gun" shows the band's diversity with dreamy instrumentation, melody, and production conjuring thoughts of California on the big screen. "Mace Face" is a "secret agent" style Avon standard that delightfully punches its way through to your heart. "P51" shreds with a guitar harmonics style similar to Maiden's Killers (1981), giving an apt description of the classic American fighter aircraft. Kicking back in the desert with "Space Native" and realizing how big and lost one can feel, only to snap right back to reality with "On Fire" agreeing to disagree in a nod to some schoolboy led heroes. "Dungeon Dave" relates to the album's title and is about a very special place for the band members on tour in Europe close to Eutopia. The album comes to a close with just three words "Was Ist Los?" performed with their unmistakable space rock style that will surely be a classic Avon "mantra", simply meaning "what is wrong?"

HIGH REEPER High Reeper CD
Formed in 2016, High Reeper is made up of Zach Thomas, Napz Mosley, Andrew Price, Pat Daly, and Shane Trimble. Originally started as just a studio band, it rapidly became apparent that these songs were meant to be heard live and loud. The band made their debut in the Philly/DE stoner rock scene in early 2017 with success which was followed up by the recording of their self-titled debut in May of the same year. With a sound deeply rooted in modern stoner rock while still giving a nod to the earliest Sabbath records, High Reeper's first offering is driven by pounding rhythms, thick guitars, and soaring, screeching vocals. High Reeper's self-titled debut is an unapologetic punch to the face for fans of early '70s proto-metal. The sound and smell of leather, weed, boozing, gambling, and death permeate the record from start to finish. Nine tracks that run from up-tempo straight ahead rock, to slowed-down, heavy, early doom. With a rhythm section throwing down grooves that are deeper than the darkest abyss and guitars big enough to put a hole in your chest, the record's finale hits just as hard as its opening track. Vocals soar above the guitars with laser-like precision, and also deliver a direct hit to your soul. Produced, engineered, and mixed by bass player Shane Trimble at TTR studios in Philadelphia and at his home studio Delwood sound in Delaware. The production is laced with old school elements while still maintaining the focus of a modern release. Recorded in the fall of 2017, High Reeper is meant to be played loud and to be played often.

VA Son Cubano NYC: Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972-82 2LP
2018 repress. "Almost all of the Afro-Cuban music in this compilation fell under the new marketing category 'salsa' (up till then it would have been simply called Latin music), and its cradle was New York City, where the tradition flourished amidst the constant mix of ethnicities and so many styles of music. It was inevitable that Afro-Cuban music would proliferate in new genres reflecting its new home. Afro-Cuban jazz was born in New York City, through the amalgamating creativity of musicians like Chano Pozo, Machito, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie. ... The recordings on Son Cubano NYC were made over the decade beginning 1972, for the new Salsoul and SAR labels and their sisters Mericana and Guajiro. For the trumpeter Chocolate, the music has 'broader harmonies and touches of jazz phrasing, but never leaves the raices and cinquillo... Cuban music is natural -- its essence is its raices [roots]'. For the singer Henry Fiol, 'New York salsa is a hybrid. When Cuban music moved to New York it added another flavour.' Latin music was exploding in the City. You could hear deejays like Polito Vega playing on the radio at any time of day; you could go dancing any night of the week, throughout the boros, at clubs like Corsos, Casablanca, Bronx Casino, Ochentas, Club Cabrojena, Carlos Ortiz' Tropicana, Hunts Point Palace. And yet -- held back because of the unmistakable Cuban personality of its music -- 'the success of SAR was due mainly to word of mouth', as co-founder Sergio Bofill recalls. ... This was still the period of the Cold War -- when Eddie Palmieri was accused of 'communist salsa' for his song 'Mozambique' (which isn't even salsa) -- and the radio stations did their bit to suppress Cuban culture. Within a few years -- by the mid-80s -- New York salsa was becoming stagnant: 'boring and monotonous', in the words of historian Max Salazar; for Charlie Palmieri, 'Europeanized' in its disavowal of improvisation. The music-making on this album was dismissed as old-fashioned. Actually -- in the glory of its long, flowing, rootsy forms, in the irresistible spell it casts on dancers everywhere -- it is timeless." Includes tracks by Rey Roig y su Sensacion, Charlie Rodriguez y su Conjunto, Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, Henry Fiol, Lita Branda, Roberto Torres, Los Jimanguas, Fernando Lavoy y los Soneros, and Angelo y su Conjunto Modelo.

DOLLARD, DEKE TOM Na You LP
Mind-blowing Afro soul music from Ivory Coast, served up by Deke Tom Dollard, an obscure artist who only recorded two albums in 1979 and 1981, but also created an original funky fusion with the Bété language. A selection of four amazing tracks recorded in Abidjan on two different records label called War Records and As Records. The music here is a mixture of funk with heavy basslines, traditional percussions, funky guitar riffs, nice horns section, and lyrics in Beté. The song "Demonde" is inspired by harmonies of the famous "Dance To The Drummer Beat" by Herman Kelly. Those two rare records were found by Afrobrazilero, aka Djamel Hammadi, and never appeared on the vinyl market. It's almost impossible to get information about this singer and composer, or the musicians involved in the recording sessions. Most of the recording sessions were lost by the labels Hot Casa licensed the tracks with here. Unique! A must have for all the Afro funk lovers. Remastered by The Carvery.

NEWAXEYES Black Fax LP
Seattle experimentalists Newaxeyes play with tension and contradictions. Merging dark electronics, crystalline guitar melodies, pummeling beats, and samples to refract the volatility, paranoia, and catharsis of the post-Information Age, the band spins carefully orchestrated and recklessly warped instrumentals into something entirely their own. Their debut album, Black Fax, recorded live to tape over the course of two days and produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Wolves In The Throne Room), is a testament to the band's genre-agnostic approach to music. A quartet of skilled multi-instrumentalists, Jordan Rundle (bass/synths/sampler), Bret Gardín (electronic drums/synths), Tyler Coray (guitar/sampler), and William Hayes (guitar/synths), draw inspiration from a wide variety of places and seamlessly merge them into songs that are as abrasive as they are cinematic. Opening song "False Flag" samples vocals from dozens of conspiracy theory videos, unrecognizable as they are seamlessly woven through soaring guitars and a glitchy drum machine. "Aleph Null" is an example of the way the band is adept at mixing textures, moods, and instruments to create something that nods at the band's eclectic list of references while being simultaneously unique. Parts of "Dennis" could easily be used as a thumping beat-driven background to a hip-hop song while others are downright ambient, blending post-rock sensibilities and a strumming guitar line. "At Blood's" serves as a slow meditation between the punching percussion that drives the rest of the album. With guest vocals from composer/vocalist Hanna Benn recorded in a cavernous gutted stairwell and distorted over a droning synthesizer, there's a hint at the dynamic abilities the band is able to pull from. Since forming in 2013, Newaxeyes has pursued a diverse range of projects within and beyond a traditional band structure. Versatile performers with backgrounds in modern composition, sound design, film, and visual art, their wide-angle vision has encompassed various multimedia projects, art collaborations, and large-scale works. Guitarist William Hayes recently played on Jóhann Jóhannson's score to Panos Cosmatos' ("Beyond the Black Rainbow"), Nicolas Cage-starring film Mandy (2018), the latest Myrkur album Mareridt (2017), toured as live keyboardist of Wolves In The Throne Room. Bret Gardín contributed electronic drums to post-punk pioneers Sort Sol's Stor Langsom Stjerne (2017). If Black Fax is anything to go by, Newaxeyes is sure to carve out something all their own in the coming years.

SINCLAIR, JOHN Beatnik Youth 2CD
Detroit's iconic "White Panther" introduces himself as "a beatnik, dope fiend, poet provocateur, race traitor and renegade. Living from hand to mouth and euro to euro, sleeping on the couches and extra beds of my friends. A man without a country and a post office box in New Orleans for a permanent address." Reciting his beat poetry in a sub-baritone growl, John Sinclair waxes lyrical about John Lennon, Thelonious Monk, Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs, and issues a libertarian's charter on "Ain't Nobody's Business". 13 songs produced by Youth, ranging from raucous rock 'n' roll to psychedelic jazz and abstract soundscapes. Throughout, Sinclair's voice functions as an anchor, taking on an American social landscape bursting with civil unrest and self-reinvention as Youth's modernist production swirls around him. Immortalized by John Lennon's 1972 song that bears his name, Sinclair is an iconic figure of '60s counterculture, famous for, among other things, having co-founded the White Panther Party and for managing Detroit's legendary leftist proto-punk outfit MC5.

SATARI/NICKY FEATURING SATARI Smile/Nobody To Love 12"
Synth heavy South African disco boogie from the mid-80s. First issued near the end of the synth-pop era, this release takes the B-sides off the mysterious group Satari's first two singles recorded at Johannesburg's legendary Satbel and Ovation Studio. Their first release was a new take on a song they had recorded for their hit EP. On the B side was a steady 4/4 beat with fat bass synth and the quick funky keyboard licks of Don Laka. For their second release they used a tactic common amongst producers ten years prior during the reign of the 7" single.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Jetsun Mila 2CD
2018 repress. Originally released on Lovely Music in 1987. Jetsun Mila is inspired by the life of Milarepa, a great yogi and poet of Tibet who lived in the 11th century. The story of his life as told to his closest disciple, Rechungpa, represents one of the most famous works within Tibetan culture. The Mila Kabum, or Namthar, has been translated into several Western languages, including English and French. Eliane Radigue's 84-minute musical evocation of Milarepa's life is in nine sections, with prelude, which correspond to major periods of the life of this famous yogi. The sections flow from one to the other without breaks, one giving birth naturally to the next. Performed (Arp synthesizer) and recorded digitally by Eliane Radigue. Other Music's Michael Klausman review of the work: "Jetsun Mila eschews text in favor of a purely electronic treating of his storied life via nine passages that slowly and seamlessly flow into one another. Radigue is one of the most perceptually disorienting composers I've ever heard, her exploration of inaudible subharmonics and overtones has a way of physically changing the landscape of the room her music inhabits, and it becomes difficult to sort out what the reality is between what you're perceiving and actually hearing. Jetsun Mila is deeply meditative, with some passages conjuring the random patterns of bells blowing in the stark mountains and valleys of Tibet, while others have the sustained power and near violence of Tibetan ritual horns. Her genius is that she achieves those effects through allusion rather than mimicry, trusting in the listener's ability to pursue the truth just as Milarepa did with his inscrutable words of wisdom."

SMITH, CRAIG Love is Our Existence LP
LP version. Tip-on gatefold sleeve; Includes liner notes; Edition of 500. Craig Smith was an extraordinarily gifted songwriter and musician who seemed poised for a successful career in the 1960s music business until his life was derailed by drugs and schizophrenia. In 1969 clean-cut, charismatic Craig Smith became Maitreya Kali, a dark, disturbed psychedelic Messiah figure with a black widow spider tattooed on his third eye. He laid out his strange vision on a self-released double-album Apache/Inca (1972), which would become a sought-after artifact of the psychedelic era. Success came easily for Craig Smith. In 1963, right out of high school he became a cast member of the popular Andy Williams TV show as one of the Good Time Singers, a wholesome folk ensemble that recorded for Capitol Records. Next he landed one of the lead parts in a new TV show, The Happeners, about a Greenwich Village folk group. But when the TV pilot was not picked up, he set out on his own musical path with the folk-rock duo Chris & Craig and then the more psychedelic Penny Arkade, produced and managed by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. Throughout this period Smith was constantly writing songs, some of which were recorded by other artists, including the Monkees ("Salesman"), Andy Williams ("Holly", "Christmas Holiday"), the Robbs ("Rapid Transit"), and Glen Campbell ("Country Girl"). But soon afterwards, his life took a dark, terrifying turn. Turning to LSD and Eastern mysticism he journeyed through Asia along the hippie trail where he was brutally attacked, raped, and left for dead. He was never the same again. As Maitreya Kali, he self-released the now legendary Apache and Inca albums in 1972 before disappearing into the shadows. He spent much of the 1970s in prison or in mental institutions before eventually drifting into homelessness on the streets of Hollywood. He died in his sleeping bag in North Hollywood Park in March 2012. Craig's older brother Gary contacted Stax with a trove of unreleased music. The best of those songs are presented on Love Is Our Existence. Professionally recorded in Los Angeles studios between 1966 and 1971, these previously unheard songs reveal a singer and songwriter of breathtaking depth and talent. Remastered from acetate discs and master tapes.

DE LEON De Leon LP
"Gamelan and capoeira in dub. The collective behind this doesn't like to talk much but their music is beautifully conversational. De Leon is the most organic and percussive of their shifting identities, developed on their Aught project in small-run, clear-shell cassette tape releases over the last few years. They've appreciated a cult interest for their takes on outernational rhythm, field recording, and the tension and relief on the knife-edge of dance music; all delivered with an impressive commitment to anonymity and clarity of vision through cut-and-dried aesthetic minimalism. These six pieces of music seem formed from wood, metal, air. Dramatic, balletic flourishes and tightly woven interlocking patterns are embedded in slowly changing and 'live' atmospheres. The shadow of a hand over the mixing desk makes gradual adjustments to alter the pressure and dimension of the space. Lean, organic, percussive, warmly engaging. A cracker. Bim."

PEDRINHO Aleluia LP
Mar & Sol's first release is a reissue of the Aleluia LP from the Cabo Verde singer Pedrinho. At the time, late '70s, this LP was one of the biggest successes from Cabo Verde music. Singer Pedrinho moved to Lisbon when he was 18 years old, and recorded this album, the first one of his career. Aleluia was produced on the same street where Mar & Sol is based nowadays, in Rua de S.Bento, Lisbon, Portugal. This street was also where Pedrinho come to live when he arrived in Portugal, like the majority of the musicians and emigrants from the old African Portuguese colonies move at that time, to try a new luck. A big community grew here and these artists got the opportunity to record their own traditional music by the hands of local labels. Now is the time for Mar & Sol to give a new life to all this music, this is the first of many reissues that are coming to start the series of the label.

WILD HAVANA Wild Havana LP
Mental Experience present a reissue of Wild Havana's self-titled album, originally released in 1977. Obscure Dutch private pressing of laid-back instrumental psychedelic/progressive sounds with jazz-funk-groove and abstract/experimental/Latin-indigenous touches. Stoned homemade atmosphere with treated/distorted electric and acoustic guitars, flute, electric piano, primitive drum machines/homemade electronics... Much in the vein of the experimental-underground scene of France and Germany during the early '70s but actually recorded and released in Holland. Wild Havana was the project of guitar player Johan Smith, helped by his brother Cor on flute. Influenced by artists like Zappa and Herbie Hancock, Johan recorded the Wild Havana album at his home studio on a 4-track, using effect devices developed by himself, like a modified proto-drum machine taken from a Hammond organ. He also used effects like phase shifter, chorus, etc. and experimented with putting wool on the guitar strings and electric effects on the mandolin. The result sounded like nothing else at the time. Buried for many years, we're excited to bring to life this unique album. RIYL: Herbie Hancock, Richard Pinhas, Christian Boule, Orexis... Insert with liner notes by band member Johan Smit. MOUVEMENTS Mouvements LP
LP version. Includes insert with liner notes; Includes digital download code which includes previously unreleased bonus tracks; Housed in a silver-mirrored sleeve. Mental Experience present the first ever reissue of Mouvements, originally released in 1973. An impossible to find artifact from the Swiss underground avant-garde scene of Geneva, originally released as a private boxset limited to 150 copies in 1973, only sold at art galleries. A unique, instrumental mix of free-jazz, classical, psych-rock, folk, improv, kraut, funk, and musique-concrete with tape effects. In the late 60s, musician/guitar player Christian Oestreicher, "a savage in the era of twist and free jazz", met artist and painter Richard Reimann, famous for his optical art, at the Aurora art gallery in Geneva. Fueled by the artistic creativity from this underground scene, where jazz and rock musicians rubbed shoulders with artists, poets, and painters, Christian ideated the Mouvements project, enrolling his friend Richard to create the artwork. Christian was a trained guitar player with diverse influences: Ornette Coleman, Chuck Berry, Zappa, Soft Machine. He envisioned Mouvements as a concept album and he asked some of his musician friends from the jazz/rock scene to join in for the recordings: among them, Jean-François Boillat (of Boillat-Thérace), Blaise Català, Jerry Chardonnens. The album sessions took place at an occupied mansion during 1972, using three Revox machines. The musicians played standing in a circle and there was lot of room for improvisation. Tape effects and a small portable synth were also used. The result was released in 1973 as a hand-numbered, deluxe boxset limited to 150 copies, including a series of Richard Reimann's lithographies and inserts. For this, the first ever reissue, Mental Experience have created a new, more affordable edition with new artwork, including an insert with liner notes and previously unreleased photos. Highly recommended if you're into avant-garde psychedelia, free-jazz, free-rock, psych-funk, kraut. Think Staff Carpenborg, Zappa, Soft Machine, Bo Hansson, The Feed-Back, Mahogany Brain, Semool, Pierre Schaeffer, the BYG and Futura labels. Master tape sound; Includes insert with liner notes and rare photos; Includes digital download code which includes previously unreleased bonus tracks, including: "Largo Pour Trompettes", "Mouvement Pour Guitare B1", "Mouvement Pour Guitare B2", and "Hard-Rock Ouverture (Take 2)".

JENSEN, CLARICE For This From That Will Be Filled CD
For this from that will be filled is the debut album by Clarice Jensen, artistic director of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME). The album explores the variable differences between acoustic and electronic sound as well as depiction of the simulated and the unconscious. It was originally conceived as a collaboration between Jensen and the artist Jonathan Turner as an audio-visual work, but is here presented in it's pure audible form. Building on a long and romantic tradition of solo cello repertoire, Jensen expands and confuses the familiar sound of the cello through the use of effects pedals, multi-tracking, and tape loops recorded at variable speeds, presented in works she has written for herself as well as a piece she conceived together with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. Also featured is Michael Harrison's "Cello Constellations" for multi-tracked cello and sine tones, written for Jensen, which meditates on long, sustaining tones. With For This From That Will Be Filled, Jensen has made an incredibly strong first album that feels like a surreal and futuristic journey through an alternate timeline. CD version comes in an initial edition of 300; Digipak.

SONAE I Started Wearing Black LP
"Haunting, spooks, ghosts and apparitions are an almost constant presence on I Started Wearing Black, the second album by the Cologne-based artist Sonae (pronounced "so-nah"). . . . I would like to rehabilitate hauntology and use it properly to characterize I Started Wearing Black, because the term is rarely as compelling to describe music as is the case here. The most recent other example could be Asiatisch by Fatma Al Qadiri (2014), but with a completely different frame of reference. [This music] rustles, crackles, ruffles, crunches, rattles, scrapes, sometimes a beat emerges from the constant noise, sometimes an obscure voice mumbles incomprehensibly, sometimes a melancholy piano figure is prevented by this noise from coming too much to the foreground. It definitely is eerie . . . In British pop-jargon, eerie first occurred to me more often when referring to particularly leftfield, spooky and... well... ghostly dub, a bass-heavy, echoing noise, from Augustus Pablo to Creation Rebel to Burial. . . . Sonae is not a kind of neo-romantic veiling with a tendency for escapist nebula. It is more a noise of latency. The noise signals a latent -- not necessarily acute -- threat, a latent uneasiness about... yes... about what? About a 'System Immanent Value Defect'? That's the name of a track on I Started Wearing Black where something that sounds like a French Horn (or a foghorn?) battles for attention through or against the background noise. . . . In the title track, after 184 seconds of rattling and hissing, a beat is unleashed, like an arrow released from a spanned bow, a beatific relief, if there is such a thing. 'White Trash Rouge Noir' first meanders along spookily, then after 144 seconds it transforms itself into a distant cousin of Einstürzende Neubauten 's 'Yü-Gung', but there is no Big Male Ego to be fed here . . . Furthermore, I Started Wearing Black was finished long before the black dresses were worn at the Golden Globes as a sign of protest against sexual violence. . . . The political dimension of gaining weight, feeling ugly and therefore dressing in black in I Started Wearing Black lurks within the noise and never becomes explicit and only rarely manifest -- or a manifesto." --Klaus Walter "Dream Sequence" features Gregor Schwellenbach. Black-on-black cover print; Includes download code.

MIRT Rite of Passage LP
LP version. Rite of Passage is a continuation of and opposition to the last album made by Mirt, Heading South. Like its predecessor, it is a kind of modern soundtrack for some non-existent trash movie. The title is taken from an episode of Miami Vice. Some voices are taken from old zombie movies. It sounds like a joke, but right now there is a significant change going on in Mirt's music and it really is a kind of rite of passage for him. There aren't that many rich, multilayered textures, there is less of a chaotic background, but more hypnotic, repetitive sequences. His music has become more minimalistic and dark, and rhythms once hidden are now distinguishable. However, you can still feel the strange, cinematic atmosphere of Mirt's previous recordings. Each track was made in just one take using modular synth, without any further mixing or overdubbing. Tomek Mirt: musician, graphic artist and designer. Works solo and in collaborations. He is part of XAOC Devices, a small boutique company developing modular synths. Mirt has released nine solo albums (for MonotypeRec, Nefryt, Foxglove/Digitalis, Backwards and Cat|Sun).

VA Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe 1980-1991 2LP
Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe 1980-1991 is the second multiple artist compilation on Music From Memory. It's compiled by record connoisseur Raphael Top-Secret and label man Jamie Tiller. The compilation brings together twenty-one tracks from across the continent; exploring the more unusual and unexpected sides of pop music produced during that period. Drawing material from cult experimental artists such as Steve Beresford, Brenda Ray, and Bill Nelson alongside one-off independent musical projects rescued from the fringes, Uneven Paths focuses on a selection of tracks that go beyond the confines of mainstream pop music but which also transcend expectations of much of the "experimental" music of the time. This is music with one foot in the avant-garde and another foot firmly rooted within the sensibilities of pop; where jazz musicians detour into synth-pop, punk bands break into boogie jams, and student doctors jam out on odd melodies with synthesizers and drum machines during their night shifts. Features Nightfall In Camp, Stroer Duo Howard Fine, Tony Hymas, Violet Eves, Miko & Mubare, Piscine Et Charles, John Makin & Friends, Nonobstant, Wolfgang Klingler, Thomas Heimes, Hans-Christian Mittag, Sound On Sound, Pete Brandt's Method, Lost Gringos, Vanakos, Brenda And The Beachballs, Patrick Forgas, Xavier Jouvelet, Lou Blic, Steve Beresford, Bill Nelson's Orchestra Arcana, Harte 10, and Monica Rypma.

No. welcomes Canadian France Jobin to the label. The Montreal based artist release her ninth album on No., Intrication. With Intrication, she grapples with some truly cosmic concepts involving Quantum Entanglement (go on, Google it) amongst other truly magical ideas which physics tend to invent these days. Musically the release can be described as "microsound ambient" but we think it's much larger than that. It is at once comprised of microscopic sonic particles yet combines that with the warmth we know and love from the "ambient" cosmos. Whilst the sub atomic particles of noise bounce around your mind, the total work weaves a warm blanket of audio enjoyment on both the micro and macroscopic levels revealing a world at once both too tiny to comprehend and too large to grasp. Presented here as No. 916 for your scientific scrutiny.

NSI. (NON STANDARD INSTITUT) 5863 CD
"A decade has passed since Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer, aka Non Standard Institute (NSI.), released their enigmatic collection of 'non-standards' (2007). Playing with mystery is the name of the game here as well. The new CD, entitled with the code 5863, is the result of collecting creative moments over years and stringing together twenty short pieces that jointly amount to almost an hour of playtime. Meditative, reflective, introspective, but also occasionally exhilarated... All these descriptions come to mind. But there's more to the story line which emerges in patient increments as the album unfolds. Music comes mostly in the form of sparse but evocative piano improvisations, layering personal expression and subtle references anchored within the depth of the musicians' experience. As the cryptic title suggests, the scope of examined experience can be symbolized through dates or years. But what counts for much more here is the sonic narrative itself with all its openness to interpretation. Some of these concise tracks can swiftly transport the listener to iconic harmonies of other musical contexts as they seamlessly relink the piano avant-gardism of Erik Satie with echoes of modern psychedelia and futuristic soundtracks. As a whole, however, the minimal instrumentalism of NSI. is as much about the notes and emotions that punctuate the electronic soundscapes generated by Tobias's unerring use of studio as it is about the space created between them. This method brings to mind the Japanese concept of 'Ma' which emphasizes the fundamental meaning of interval or space for any structure. It is the in-between that matters. The non-being. The non-standard." --Dominik Bartmanski, Berlin, February 2018

AERA The Sound Path CD
Born in the high north of Germany and now a Berlin resident, Ralf Schmidt, aka Aera, first appeared on the electronic music map when he established his own Aleph Music label back in 2010. With only a handful of releases, Aera was able to lay out his very own musically topography on the cutting edges between house, psychedelia, and breakbeats. This colorful mix culminated on his debut album Offseason Traveller in 2013 (ALEPH 001CD/LP), resonating the past forty years of electronic music, which brought him the attention of a wider audience as well as fellow DJs and producers. So it was a logical consequence that his talent also attracted other labels and lead to widely praised releases on Innervisions, Maeve, or John Talabot's Hivern Discs. With these, Aera's sound bloomed further into bubbly acid and trancey territories and his fine reputation as a singular producer, travelling DJ, and remixer flourished. With The Sound Path Aera continues his musical travels on Permanent Vacation. His second album is the most coherent and definitely most personal work to date. Here, he has perfected his sound even further -- adding nuances from the meadows of new age, kraut cliffs, and high-flying kites of ambient. Complete with the cinematic and natural qualities of Ralf's music, it will draw you in deeply through a great variety of landscapes before your inner eye. However, you'll never lose track, because this path is beautifully illuminated. CD version comes in a jewel case and includes an eight-page booklet.

CLEMENTI, ROBERTO Avesys EP 12"
Pets Recordings start 2017 with a techno maestro: Roberto Clementi. It begins with "Avesys": its dubby warmth, rippling rhythmic elements, and patient percussive builds, don't just mark the perfect tone and timbre of an on-point take off set, but also trigger the whole full-spectrum, deep space EP concept. "Voschod" follows with a one-way trip into space, exploring the lesser-told half of the '60s space race and the Russian's second wave spacecraft trips. "Landing A Man" spins the listener into gravity-free stasis with a historic homage to Kennedy's ambition to land a man on the moon.

BEYAZ KELEBEKLER Koln Session 1976 LP
Famous for their matching, colorful suits and always-happy smiles, Beyaz Kelebekler ("White Butterflies") were a mixed-gender Turkish band very popular during the '70s. They released one album plus numerous 45s in Turkey and other countries like Holland and Italy. In 1976 during the last day of their European tour, just after one gig in Cologne, Beyaz Kelebekler visited a studio of a friend which was still in construction. They decided to record a few songs, just for fun and for testing the new studio equipment. It was a very basic, one-take recording, using an eight-channel mixer, a few mics, and a reel-to-reel tape machine. The result was an amazing example of Anatolian psych-funk, featuring wah-fuzz guitar, flute, heavy drums, joyous male/female vocals... Unreleased until now, Pharaway Sounds present the first ever release of these surprising recordings, rescued from the only surviving cassette tape. Includes color insert with photos.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Silence Is Sexy CD
2018 repress. Reissue of Einstürzende Neubauten's Silence Is Sexy, originally released in 2000 from singer Blixa Bargeld and his band partners (N.U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit and Rudolf Moser). A concept of "conceptlessness" was created at that time from a spontaneous idea (many thought it was an April Fool's joke when Einstürzende Neubauten first stood on the stage at Berlin's "Moon" on April 1, 1980; now over 30 years ago), from which the "brilliant dilettantes" developed their own strategy against social and musical architecture using metal pipes, feathers and machines. Blixa Bargeld constructed metaphor-laden poetry around which unique worlds of sound were built up from objects of the most varied origins. The band discovered sounds beyond the pain barrier, the beauty of dissonance and the aesthetics of the scrapyard. They are regarded as the most important engines in the development of new musical strategies. Hardly another German band has characterized the musical landscape as lastingly as Einstürzende Neubauten. Their influence on the music world was and is as great as their timeless character. Silence Is Sexy finally receives a long-awaited reissue on the band's own label Potomak. The element of surprise was and continues to be routine for Einstürzende Neubauten. On Silence Is Sexy they masterfully celebrate the unexpected in the exploration of silence. It is a wonderful album in the classical Neubauten sense; lyrical and melancholy. It's a musical coming-of-age from metal-defying scrap iron sound to constructed melodiousness, with a familiar rhythmic undertow -- playful, arrogant, poetic, subversive, dandified and mature. From its first release in 2000 (marking the 20-year existence of the band) to date, it has doubtlessly remained the group's most complex work and the most fascinating in its evolution. It shows the Neubauten universe from both a known, emotionally moving side, as well as one that is deliberately constructive. It clearly breathes the inimitably rough Neubauten handwriting, while Blixa's voice cuts through intellectual and cryptic texts. It is carried by metal sounds, from which individual instruments can almost no longer be extracted -- and by silence. Ultimately, nearly inaudible tones or laughter in the right place can seem more destructive than the most enduring rage. This is an album that won't be ignored; a unique appearance in the history of German rock music.

DRUMM, KEVIN Inexplicable Hours CD
Inexplicable Hours is the sequel of the successful six-CD boxset Elapsed Time, also released by Sonoris in 2017 (SNS 013CD). The material on the first LP of Inexplicable Hours documents a new direction in his music, with some of his last electroacoustic experimentations with audio generators, field recordings, and various electronic devices. The material on the second LP explores the same ambient/drone territories as the boxset, but there is less static and it is more complex than it appears on the first listen. And as always with recent Kevin Drumm's music there's a sense of majesty, of mystery and a melancholic beauty that is uniquely his own. Some words about the boxset are also appropriate for this record: "Despite Drumm's noisy reputation, his music can be overwhelmingly sensual even at its loudest, providing a form of minimalism replete with a delicate, melancholic motion. How wildly divergent emotions rise, hover, and fall using so little is a mystery that only Kevin Drumm can provide." Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi. CD version comes in cardboard cover.Acclaim for Elapsed Time (2017):"The vast array of styles and works to be had here makes it an engaging challenge, one that can differ widely from disc to disc, but never lacks the cohesion and touch of a master craftsman and composer working at the top of his game." --Brainwashed"These pieces, despite their length, are like perfect miniatures, timeless puzzles that you try and unravel through close listening. And their sense of place, of home, of sanctuary, feels more important than ever right now." --The Wire

MANN, CHICO Manifest Tone: The Best of Volumes 1-3 CD
The Manifest Tone journey began in 2004. During breaks from touring with Antibalas, New York City-born Chico Mann began crafting a more personal sound in his basement studio. A hybrid beast of culture and tone where Fela Kuti and Willie Colon meets Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, Afrika Bambaata, and Kraftwerk, it lives in a landscape shaped by Africa, Cuba, New York, and Miami. These unique experimentations led to the release of Manifest Tone Volume 1 in 2006 and eventually morphed into Volumes 2 and 3 that were finished in 2008 and 2010 respectively. What sounds on paper like a meeting of styles past in reality emerges sounding incredibly fresh and original -- a unique style Chico Mann has dubbed "Afro-Freestyle". This album represents the choicest cuts from Chico Mann's Manifest Tone, Volumes 1-3, that until now were only available digitally.

SUSSO Keira LP
2016 release. On Keira, Susso, aka bassist/producer Huw Bennett, creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the Mandinka people, recorded during a recent trip to Gambia. Initially travelling with the aim of gaining perspective as a musician and to discover a new world of music first hand, Huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artists, mostly belonging to the celebrated Suso and Kuyateh griot families. The tracks are composed entirely from original source material, field recordings, and Huw's talents as a multi-instrumentalist; performing tuned percussion from the region including the Mandinka balafon, kutiringding drum, as well as drawing on his skill as a professional upright/electric bassist. The music produced has a contemporary electronic sound, whilst still paying homage to a traditional Gambian aesthetic. Keira (meaning "peace") guides the listener through Huw's journey up the River Gambia, being welcomed into remote dusty villages, where your people are the most important thing in life.

The album has been produced in collaboration with Sam Jones from SoundThread, whose recent works with Orlando Julius and remixes for Mugwisa International and Sarabi have been rapturously received. The tracks remain profoundly "gogo" with traditional instruments and singing, but are infused with an organic electronic aesthetic. HIDDEN EMPIRE Mind Palace 2LP
Bridging instrumental tact with melodic mysticism, live act and DJ duo Hidden Empire present their debut album Mind Palace, the fruit of their labor of one whirlwind year. On Stil Vor Talent they find a welcome home, having already gained traction with several releases on the label as well as other renowned imprints such as Suara and Filth On Acid. Ranging from downtempo electronica to iterative techno with groovy house incursions, the diversity of the genres explored across the 12 tracks mirror the Cologne-based artists' own sonorous influences as well as their diverse musical sympathies. Fluid, atmospheric tracks set a consistently lush vibe overall, from the esoteric kick-off track "Journey Into Self" to subtle warm-up tools like the oriental-instilled "Hummus" and "Fafnir", or the couple's first vocal collaboration "Pure". Fellow Cologne singer Inga Nelke brings a touch of sensuality with her soft vocal chops atop a broken beat-infused melody accented with gripping piano chords. But it's in club tracks that the album abounds, found often in antithetical pairings, whether it's the marriage of a Moog bassline and warm Caribbean rhythms in "Limbo In Detroit" or the juxtaposition of analog and digital rhythms on "In The Woods", created using Sylvan Recordings as percussion. It's the title track "Mind Palace", however, that reaches the apex of antipolar combinations, displaying a breakbeat-heavy lead doused in exotic vocals perched onto a steady bassline, underlining the artists' knack for innovative rhythms. A nod to the classic heydays of acid comes in the shape of "Acid Flashback", centered around a massive synth hook courtesy of the iconic Roland 303, a tinge slightly present on the spiraling fierce cut "Asmoday", albeit a fraction more subtle. Energy is one of the key traits of the album, as Branko and Niklas conceive a copious amount of hard-hitting tracks that amplify and engage towards the second half of the record. "Black Beauty" oozes stamina from the get-go, its relentless groove guiding a subdued bassline and minimal elements towards the peak point. With "Natural Takeover", a tech powerhouse with a tenacious lead and ominous vocals, the album reaches its darkest corner of the "Mind Palace" universe. All in all, the artists showcase a plethora of straightforward tracks with heterogeneous sound aesthetics, where a closer listen can only reveal further and more elaborate depths. BOLANDER, KRISTOFFER What Never Was Will Always Be CD
"I dream of cities -- endless cities where I will die alone..."Welcome to the soundtrack for the next Ice Age, home to the last survivors of the global climate catastrophe. The night is pierced by a single voice, ringing as clear as crystal between Kiruna and Trelleborg. It belongs to the Swedish singer-songwriter Kristoffer Bolander, whose second solo album is being released by the Hamburg-based label Tapete. What Never Was Will Always Be offers compelling evidence of his accession to the European elite of alternative songwriters. Moving beyond the typical spectrum of alternative folk as heard on Bolander's 2015 debut I Forgive Nothing (TR 325CD/LP), the sophomore album represents a significant evolution in sound. The wonderfully delicate, high-pitched voice of the Swedish singer is framed beautifully by his excellent band, at times quietly focused, at others ramping up distorted guitars and visceral drums. But what really makes the atmosphere of What Never Was Will Always Be unique is the introduction of electronic elements. From gentle synth pads, reminiscent of Brian Eno soundscapes, to dry, pulsating electro drums, with flashes of arpeggios. The songs range from the epic über-hit "Cities" to danceable synth pop numbers like "Animals" and classic folk tunes such as "True Romance" which features Kristoffer Bolander's voice accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. The album is a panoply of small worlds, every song occupying its own sonic dimension, produced to perfection. Add in Bolander's unique lyrical qualities and an extraordinary mood develops, his words falling like mantras from the future, with tales of lost cities and life-changing romances. The new components gently shift the music away from the tried and trusted folk album biotope into a forward-looking electro folk pop sphere. Kristoffer Bolander took care of all the arrangements by himself and Daniel Johansson, renowned for his work with the likes of Grammy winner Tommy Black, was on production duties. Together, the pair created a distinctive sound for each individual song. Bolander and Johansson's meticulous attention to detail shines through the array of instrumentation so masterfully deployed on the record, perfectly complemented by Bolander's expressive voice. What Never Was Will Always Be is a fresh, contemporary folk pop album, tempting the listener to dance, to dream, to cry. RIYL: Cigarettes After Sex, Brandon Flowers.

The group would soon be signed to Parlophone and the rest, as they say, is history. This is part two of two historical live recordings from a two-LP set originally released as Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg, Germany; 1962 in 1977. The first part was released as A Taste Of Honey by Wax Love in 2017 (WLV 82006LP). These recordings capture the band just before they rocketed to stardom. A truly important piece of Beatle history.

SATO, HIROSHI Orient CD
Wewantsounds present a reissue and the first international release of Hiroshi Sato's ultra-rare synth masterpiece, Orient, originally released in 1979 on Kitty Records in Japan only. This highly sought-after album is a superb breezy mix of Japanese synth-pop with a subtle touch of mid-70s Herbie Hancock-style funk and AOR. Originally released in 1979, at a fruitful time when Hiroshi Sato, Haruomi Hosono, and Shigeru Suzuki were fresh from playing in the group Tin Pan Alley and Haruomi Hosono had just formed Yellow Magic Orchestra, Orient is a unique balance of various styles. It has become one of the most sought-after Japanese LPs on the global Balearic scene and is now exchanging hands for astronomical prices. The album includes such cult tracks as "Son Go Kuw" and "Do-Jo" popular on the international DJ scene. It features the best Japanese musicians at the time, including Shigeru Suzuki on guitar, Haruomi Hosono on bass, Pecker on percussion, and Sato himself on keyboards and synthesizers. The album also features on Gilles Peterson's "Significant Album" List. Fully remastered from the original Kitty Records tapes by Universal Japan. Includes original four-page color insert, including English translations of the original liner notes by leading Japanese journalist Yasufumi Amatatsu, plus the full track-by-track musician line up. "Breezy Balearic synth pop with a Nippon twist" --The Vinyl Factory.

JONNY L Piper 12"
Jonny L's classic gets the re-whisk from a solid set of UK bassheads. At the tail-end of 2017, XL Recordings reissued Jonny L's seminal D&B album Sawtooth on vinyl for the first time (1997). After showcasing this 20-year-old classic, XL Recordings release a 12" containing remixes of the most iconic track from the LP, "Piper". With efforts from Peverelist, Overmono, Powell, and Zomby, these remixes go some way towards showing the influence Jonny L's music still has on a wide range of contemporary electronic artists.

YOUNG ECHO Young Echo 2LP
"Spread across two 180g discs, spanning 24 cuts and served in a gatefold sleeve designed by members and affiliates, the Young Echo LP is a capsule intended for cementation through time. It's been almost five years since their last album. As a group, extended radio submissions, prolonged studio sessions and notorious club nights make up the cogs of time. Over the course of these years, the network has grown continually, both as one, and with singular, multi-directional paths from each of the 11 artists that make up the Young Echo collective, counting Jabu, Vessel, Kahn, Neek, Ishan Sound, Ossia, Manonmars, Bogues, Rider Shafique, Chester Giles and Jasmine towards the crew, with projects such as Bandulu, FuckPunk, O$VMV$M, Gorgon Sound and ASDA adding to the table in their individual ways. However, this record aims not to be judged on any single producer or vocalist. It is most effective as a whole, simply titled Young Echo. Of course each of the artists has an important part to play, but it is very much about the act of balance, accepting individualism to form a greater whole. A good example is the welcome addition of new energy coming from Jasmine (1/3 of Jabu) who injects endless space with her vocals, perfectly answered by the cool-killin' wordplay of Manonmars -- who makes his long awaited debut here -- sharing stage with the immediate poetry of ASDA's very own Chester Giles, along the mighty sound of Rider Shafique, and Bogues' versatile style that can flit between rap & song within seconds. Five very different vocalists that could've tried to find a compromise, but instead choose to connect in different ways, finding their niche in the equal range of rhythms and sounds that sprawl in this shared space, the juxtaposition. Detuned soundsystem stylings, love songs swaying in hacked up ambience, skeletal dancehall, microphone technique, dread electronics, outsider pop, this record manifests the outcome of the shapeshifting anarchy which rears its head when no one idea can rule, embracing the diversities when one path must be made up of many."
