METRO SKIM Actualising Possibilities 12"
Metro Skim returns to 6dimensions with Actualising Possibilities. On the surface, Actualising Possibilities presents itself as a lucid and dark collection of minimal-techno but when asked about the release Metro Skim's objectives demonstrate something entirely different. On the track "Monotony", Metro Skim becomes a bastion for mindfulness through a techno lens, finding positivity through something that might initially seem disconcerting. Actualising Possibilities drives forward at an unrelenting pace with the use of the Roland 909 that was more sparsely used on the producers debut.

AUGUST, DAVID DCXXXIX A.C. 2LP
A proudly nonconformist and multifaceted electronic artist, David August went on hiatus for a year. Taking time to reflect and discover unknown paths in both, musically and personally, August connected to his Italian roots, drawing inspiration from its history, rich culture, and diverse landscape. The result is a new language of sound and space that until now has remained hidden inside of him. Ready to come back, August emerges with a new label, 99CHANTS, a finite project limited to 99 releases. Offering an openminded platform for a diverse range of artists, the label aims to contribute to culture and society in a positive way. The first release comes from August himself. Ambient in form, DCXXXIX A.C. marks the first step that will lead to a bigger picture. David in his own words: "A couple years ago, I found myself in jam sessions, naively messing around with sound; no rhythm, no structure. Not considering any borders, trying to 'think' about music, as subconsciously as possible. It's been a vein in me ever since, which I developed and explored quietly in my personal space, slowly realizing that half of me somehow existed in this realm; so-called ambient music. During these years, a relevant amount of drafts came together. While working on my main project last year, I decided to present this other side of me in an own independent way, to initialize a path that would be continued. I founded a new label, 99CHANTS, a dream I wish I could have realized earlier. . . . Everything relies on these two things, in my opinion. The record is 60 minutes in length and contains 24 tracks, which I see as being all linked together, forming a single, extended breath. As my most recent work pulls inspiration from my Italian provenience, so does this album. I go back in time, finding myself surrounded by the nature and old spirits of an ancient commune, in the middle of the country. Relating to the details of a land, it's a soundtrack to a time and space unknown. Generally speaking, the tracks took shape rather quickly, trying to believe in the moment of what a first intuition could have of value, or maybe not. All music came together in Berlin, Iceland, above the Atlantic and in a small Mediterranean town. Connecting the dots, the story leads to where the next begins." Gatefold sleeve.

The group of Paul Stewart, Keith Girdler, Cath Close, Ian Gardner, and James Neville are Sarah Records royalty alongside The Field Mice, Heavenly, The Wake, and The Orchids, and this is the final recording from arguably the most beautiful, afflicted band of '90s indie-pop and DIY. POOLE, BENNETT WILSON Bennett Wilson Poole LP
LP version. Danny Wilson (Danny And The Champions Of The World, Grand Drive), and Robin Bennett (The Dreaming Spires, Goldrush, Saint Etienne) join forces with Tony Poole (Starry Eyed And Laughing), producer extraordinaire, and king of the electric twelve-string Rickenbacker. Their voices, guitars, and songwriting combining to marvelous effect in a collection of songs that began as uplifting acoustic music and grew into something far more wide-ranging and transcendent. Pulling on influences from the '60s pop of The Byrds, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys, through to the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, with dashes of Petty and Springsteen thrown in for good measure, perhaps the most remarkable thing is that what shines through all of this is the quality and originality of the songwriting. The songs deal with wide-ranging issues and personal truths, from the aptly-titled opener "Soon Enough" through the biographical tale of Danny's family in "Wilson General Store", and the politically-charged rallying cry of "Hate Won't Win" to the social commentary of album-closer "Lifeboat (Take a Picture of Yourself)". All three collaborators have had critical acclaim in their own right. Danny Wilson's credentials go back to his days in Grand Drive with brother Julian, and his consistent high-caliber output with his Champions Of The World led them to sweeping the board at the first UK Americana Awards with "Album", "Artist" and "Song" of the year awards richly deserved; Tony Poole's Starry Eyed And Laughing were hailed as "the English Byrds" on the back of their two CBS-released albums in the mid-seventies and he has since built an enviable reputation as producer and engineer; Robin Bennett has been relentlessly turning out timeless songs from his Oxfordshire base in bands from Goldrush to The Dreaming Spires, alongside founding two award-winning festivals (Truck and Wood) and lending his multi-instrumental skills to Saint Etienne. But in Bennett Wilson Poole, the trio seem to have stumbled upon that rarity of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

DORIAS BARACCA Dorias Baracca LP
LP version. Dorias Baracca's existence was cut short when lead singer and main songwriter, Buster Svendsen, passed away in the summer of 2011 -- incidentally the same day as the album was completed. This is the first time this material has been released. Swirling, melodic dream-pop wrapped in loud, kaleidoscopic guitars, heavy drums, and ecstatic noise. Bleak but sensuous, visceral but tuneful, brimming with youthful wonder and confusion. Dorias Baracca was formed in Odense, Denmark in 2007. They released an EP on Club AC30 in 2010, a release that received plenty praise: "... Already light years ahead of many peers who've spent entire careers searching for a similar happy medium", wrote Drowned In Sound. It turned out to be the band's only release while in existence. Slowdive never sounded this loud, hard-hitting, and desperate. My Bloody Valentine was never this colorful and psychedelic. Dorias Baracca married the thick haze of guitars to trippy psychedelia, and ultimately had as much in common with American bands such as (early) Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr. as with the more ethereal British bands. This album would be the last thing the band ever recorded, and for various reasons it has remained unreleased since its completion in 2011, until now. Although they were only in their late teens at the time it's a fully formed album: it's the sound of a band with total confidence in what they're doing, superb skills for melody and arrangement, as well as youthful energy.

BONG ODYSSEY Gareth Liddiard & Rui Pereira - Recordings 1993-98 2LP
What was before The Drones and even before The Gutterville Splendour Six? This! Gareth Liddiard and Rui Pereira seeding the seed of noise and distortion in the period 1994-1998 in this Bong Odyssey project which recorded this never before released, brutal album of what is 100% The Drones' sound. Gatefold sleeve; Edition of 500.Gareth Liddiard on the record: "Bong Odyssey is a bunch of stuff Rui and myself recorded in the mid-nineties after we left high school. We were total music nerds into stuff like Suicide, Hüsker Dü, Psychic TV, Merzbow, Big Black, lots of free jazz, Stravinsky and all sorts of weird shit. We lived in Perth which meant we didn't have many friends into the same stuff so we just worked at our jobs then came home and smoked weed, took acid and everything else, drank booze and messed around on our tape machines. We had a ton of music gear like synths, Hammond organs, drum machines, lots of weird effects units. None of that shit was cool then so we could afford to own it. We weren't playing many gigs. We'd done the crazy fast and heavy punk thing and we're moving away from that, as you can tell. We basically jammed and recorded songs at night with no intention of doing anything other than blowing our own minds. Our neighbours hated us and we were always being evicted. I have no idea what people will make of this stuff 'cause it is super weird and fucked up. This is before the Gutterville Splendour Six and right at the beginning of The Drones. When we moved to Melbourne in 2000 to do The Drones thing we sold all of our shit and wound up with guitars only. So naturally we became a guitar band. But between 1993 and 1997 or 1998 we did everything in almost complete isolation without anyone else's input on all sorts of instruments. Western Australia was so out of touch with the rest of the world and we were so out of step with Western Australia that we just disappeared up our own arses. Bong Odyssey is crazy music for crazy music's sake. Pure and simple."

ABER, SHLOMI Linear Equation 2LP
Shlomi Aber presents his third album Linear Equations. The ten-tracker double-LP closes the ten-year celebration of Be As One and follows his 2010 album Chicago Days, Detroit Nights on Ovum Recordings (OVM 9010CD/EP). Through carefully crafted EPs on NonPlus, Figure, Be As One, and more recently Odd Even and Drumcode Ltd, Shlomi's sound has continued to evolve and refine with his Linear Equation album. The album opens up with "Interior", setting the tone for an introspective journey that will take you from the dub-infused techno of "Echo Mission" and "Fractions" to the acidic trip of "Midnight Spooks" and "Mod3333". Hypnotic techno on "Eimeon" and "Fall Into Wonder" flirts with broken beats on "Installer" and climax with the floating percussions and anthemic pads of "State Of Sorrow". Gatefold sleeve.

PURE HELL Noise Addiction LP
2018 repress. Beat Generation presents a reissue of Pure Hell sole full-length album, recorded in 1978 but not released until 2006. In 1974, on the streets of Philadelphia, a band unlike any other was formed. They called themselves Pretty Poison. They had a sound so ahead of its time that the music industry was not yet ready for it. They coupled the punk sound of the New York bands of the time with a harder, faster heavy metal edge unheard before. Their unique sound was a result of Kenny Gordon's berserk choreography and Preston Morris's needling guitar riffs, while Steel and Spider added synchronized barrage with no nonsense execution to the arsenal. Inspired by the famous fuel-altered dragster, they changed their name to Pure Hell in 1975. Soon after, they moved to New York City where they played with bands like the New York Dolls, Sid Vicious, Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, The Dead Boys, The Stimulators, Richard Hell, The Germs, The Nuns, The Cramps and more. In 1978 Pure Hell headlined a tour of the UK, with bands like the UK Subs, Wilko Johnson, Vermilion & the Aces and more opening for them. While in the UK, their only original record was released. It was a single released by their manager Curtis Knight on his label, Golden Sphinx Records. The songs on the single were "These Boots Were Made for Walking" and "No Rules." The single charted in the top 40 charts in the UK. During the same year, a full length album was recorded but was never released. It did not surface again for 28 years.

SUNNY & THE SUNLINERS Little Brown Eyed Soul LP
"When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. Born and raised in San Antonio, where he still resides, Sunny became a star right out of high school in the late '50s and hasn't looked back in the six decades since. After releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal. As a logical next step after Big Crown's excellent (and Sunny-approved) Mr. Brown Eyed Soul compilation from September, the label has started digging into the vaults of Sunny's Key-Loc Records label to unearth some legit soul classics -- which are hard to find even in San Antonio, and clean originals will cost you a pretty penny if you ever luck into one. The album has been remastered and includes original album art. The band is tight, the sound is honest, the vocals are dusky and deep, and the album is an undeniable soul and Texas music classic, ready to be discovered by a whole new generation of music fans. Dive in and be ready for a permasmile, thanks to that patented Sunny sound."

CAMISASCA, JURI Evoluzione Interiore CD
Four long and vaporous unreleased tracks that document the Juri Camisasca's first mystical afflatus, bringing to light the moments of "collective meditation" of some events in 1978, including the recordings drawn from the exhibition "L'evoluzione interiore dell'Uomo", which took place at the Villa Reale in Monza. After his participation in the Telaio Magnetico project in 1975, and in parallel to his contribution in works like Franco Battiato's Juke Box (1978) and Lino Capra Vaccina's Antico Adagio (1978), and in Raul Lovisoni and Francesco Messina's Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo (1979), a more general syntony of Camisasca for different aspects of Eastern philosophies seemed to conceive his first personal form of music as a "celestial ocean" in which to break the eternal divine love. The mantra nature of deep drones of a natural reverberated harmonium literally introduce you to another level of consciousness; harmonic chants of dhrupad inspiration expanding the ethereal voice in the transcendental plot of all, while Roberto Mazza's oboe intervenes to paint this perfect osmotic sound echoing motifs of ancient medieval saltarello. For Camisasca, "the vibration of sound is something primordial which contains the mystery of creation"; and in this sense "the musician is a medium through which the Nature is expressed". This makes Evoluzione Interiore an intense minimalist work where singing generates a universal and archetypical spiral of purity and candor that suggests the Pandit Pran Nath's lesson as well as dialogues in concept with the mutability flux of seminal works as Terry Riley's Persian Surgery Dervishes (1972), Peter Michael Hamel's The Voice of Silence (1973) and Nada (1977), or with research on the overtones as that of Roberto Laneri's Prima Materia. DEUTER Princess Of Dawn / Soundtrack LP
Private press library recordings of the early '70s. Together with Florian Fricke and Peter Michael Hamel, Deuter is certainly mainly responsible for the fruitful encounters between European sensibility and Eastern aesthetics in the German music of the 1970s. Soundtrack was originally produced by Kuckuck in 1973 not for an official and public release, but as a "library" recording to be used for films, TV, and radio. As a library recording. it respects the canonical and typological structure of the genre with 26 short sonic fragments, sequences imagined and conceived like fulminating illuminations. There's still a solid electronic vocation that, however, has put aside the most disruptive effluvia of D (1971) of pure "kraut" ancestry. In fact, the album is more like an ideal passing bridge between some ritual instances of the previous Aum (1972) and the following successful phase of Deuter during the period when he stays in the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh's ashram in Poona realizing, in parallel to a renewed inner life, masterpieces like Celebration (1976), Haleakala (1978), Ecstasy (1979), and Silence Is The Answer (1981). Musically speaking, Soundtrack presents itself as a heterogeneous work with nocturnal, cinematic, galactic and atmospheric-environmental implications. Electronics remains the predominant factor but can vary from mantra drones of more ceremonial and meditative "space-relax" tones of some tracks ("Triad", "Deep Sea", "Gothic Velvet", or "Evening") to the most amused formulations of pulsating analog synths that in the hands of Deuter become "toy-equipment" to modulate and explore ("Desert Rock", "Synth Effect", "Flea Dance", or "Laser"). There is no lack of acoustic moments more ethnically inspired with Arabian and Indian ("Reed", "Arabia") or devotionally solar themes ("Tom Bombaddils Dance"), evoking an air of diffuse peace then completely conquered in the beloved India.

ABATE, MAURIZIO Standing Waters LP
With Standing Waters Maurizio Abate recovers the discourse started with Loneliness Desire And Revenge (BS 027LP, 2016) but with a different narrative sensitivity. The symbolic air that you breathe suggests a personal and universal experience in which thoughts and perceptions remain as enveloped in an eternal cosmic wheel. It's a condition that flows sincerely into an emphatic introspection and identification between the stasis of an inner soul and the flowing vitality of stagnant aquatic landscapes. In this direction the music of Abate always condenses multiple ranges of different emotional spectra evoked by profound naturalistic references. The airy openings of the strings, the distant whispers of the harmonica, cascades of phrasings calmer or more torrential can lead into the magnificent climax of nostalgia. The string arrangement for violin and cello by Lucia Gasti introduces in a dimension of idyll, in elegiac passages of touching poetry almost of chamber music but at the same time wet by the pastoral and bucolic moods of autumn landscapes; they are paintings imbued with different flavors and colors that recall the light and the candor of the Venetian tones or the moving paintings full of meaning. In the darkest and saddest moments, the open chords are like suspensions of unresolved questions and torments, but the cathartic finale with a free and minimalist piano prelude to possible future glares, almost alludes to the idea that even where there's stasis the sun can still shine the hope for the new on the clearing of the pond. There remains the feeling with that stylistic "freedom of expression", dear to the visionaries Fahey and Basho, but there is also a clear interpretation of the expressive possibility of the lead guitar, absolutely lyrical and contemporary for refinement of the crystalline sound, which places this work in parallel with the basic acoustic tests of others great like Jim O'Rourke, Jack Rose, or James Blackshaw.

ICE BATHS Ice Baths LP
Self-titled debut from Ice Baths. London-based Ice Baths take influence from cult heroes such as Swell Maps, Television Personalities, Devo, US Maple -- all restless energy and angled aggression. Lyrically there is a bleakness and darkness, though the band prefer the listener to reach their own conclusions as to lyrical themes. "They centre on feelings or imagery that can be dreary, dark, difficult and abstract. We deliberately pass the buck to the listener to pick out certain moods or feelings," explains the band, which consists of Alex Ives, Thomas Cleall, Ed Shellard, and Jack Davis. The production process was not simple nor was it smooth. The band had a very clear idea of how they wanted the record to sound and that included a long, pain-staking period where ideas were scrapped and reworked. "It was an absolute challenge, we were very picky about how to get the sound we wanted. It led us to mixing the record ourselves. We wanted the record unpolished and raw, hissy, trebly, bitty and a bit uncouth," says Alex. To achieve the desired effect, the album was recorded on a selection of different Tascam tape machines -- a move to retain the grittiness of early demos as well as the spike their live shows are known for. Ice Baths have been on the London circuit for a short while now, they're a notoriously tight live band but now they are ready to take the next step. 140 gram vinyl; Includes two art prints, lyric sheet, and download code. Recommended to fans of Swell Maps, Wire, Devo, Women, Faux Fur, Unblonde, Cold Pumas, Viet Cong, Pavement.

Following are two killer cuts: "Répulsion", where the main riff has a jaunty, arpeggiated rhythm and "Timeline's Wrong", a heads-down acid roller with vocal stabs and an absorbing atmosphere. TYNDALL Reflexionen LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's third album, Reflexionen, originally released in 1982. The third Tyndall album is less experimental than the electronic duo's previous work from 1981 Traumland (BB 287CD/LP). The songs, featuring vocoder vocals, are more clearly structured into verses and choruses, the arrangements more considered. Stylistically, Reflexionen is a mix of synth-pop and electronic krautrock, at times not a million miles away from the early works of Andreas Dorau. More so than on their preceding instrumental albums, Tyndall's Reflexionen held a mirror to the band members' personal situation and the prevalent mood of the period during which they made the record. First of all, the two musicians (Rudolf Langer, Jürgen Krehan) had relocated to West Berlin, an exclave in the GDR. Due to the fact that German military was forbidden by the Allied Powers in West Berlin, neither Krehan nor Langer had to do national service or its alternative, community service. Meanwhile, 1982 was the year when German-speaking pop and rock found its way into the charts alongside old-fashioned Schlager songs. Punk and new wave had done the groundwork a few years earlier, but the music of bands like Fehlfarben, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, or the Doraus Und Die Marinas were now ready to enter the mainstream under the banner of Neue Deutsche Welle. Music with German lyrics was flavor of the season. On a lot of tracks Jürgen Krehan sings in German on Reflexionen as well (using a vocoder). Reflexionen is a less experimental album than its predecessor Traumland. Due in no small measure to the vocoder vocals with verses and choruses, the tracks feel more clearly structured, the arrangements more considered. Bass octave, simple, breezy, dreamy harpsichord melody sprinkles, cheerful, carefree, sometimes enigmatic lyrics. The album closes with a series of eminently listenable instrumentals, which hint at the next stage of musical evolution which would ultimately reach its conclusion on the fourth and final Tyndall album.

TYNDALL Durch Die Zeiten LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's Durch Die Zeiten, originally released in 1983. Having successfully released three albums, the Berlin-based electronic duo Tyndall fell out so badly with one another in 1983 that they ended up splitting the fourth album in two, taking a side each. Jürgen Krehan's half showcases his customarily nimble synth-pop, as well as several pieces influenced by classical music. Rudi Langer launches into celestial revelry on the other side, underpinned here and there by a driving beat. Nevertheless: both sides sound unmistakably like Tyndall. On Durch Die Zeiten Jürgen Krehan used a music computer for the first time, aided by a mysterious musician by the name of Yin Yang from Tokyo, according to the original credits, who apparently contributed computer programs and two tracks entitled "Barock" and "Klassik". Yin Yang may well be a pseudonym Krehan used, also surfacing on the rare and highly-prized cassette Flusswelt released on David Elliott's YHR Tapes label in 1983. As anticipated by the last tracks of the previous album, 1982's Reflexionen (BB 288CD/LP), the pieces here are structurally clearer, more developed, moving in a more classical direction, away from synth-pop. Rudolf Langer opens the B side with a track called "Kambrium". This geological era was ushered in by the "Cambrian explosion". He paints this "big bang" of animal life in almost religious, idyllic, fanciful tones, with roaring sounds and futuristic pitch sweeps. The next track, "Silur", references the Silurian period, characterized by massive tectonic activity which precipitated biological crises. Next up, the jovially marching "Karbon" may be Langer's vision of the indefatigable cycle of luxuriant vegetation as it sought to survive in the carbon deposits of this age. The LP finishes with a track dedicated to the Permian period. In retrospect, a certain conceptual rigor can be attributed to Tyndall's releases. A common thread runs through each album, allowing the tracks to unfold in sequence. On the one hand, the album borrows from classical notions, on the other, Langer's playfully impressionistic works. Durch Die Zeiten was the last record released by the Tyndall duo. Both musicians continued to make music, just not with each other. Rudolf Langer teamed up with Peter Preuß to found LAPRE. Jürgen Krehan released a number of new age albums as Nik Tyndall. This reissue marks the first CD issue of Durch Die Zeiten.

EFDEMIN Naif CD
Efdemin, aka Phillip Sollmann, returns with a striking hybrid concept that merges the album format with the "continuous DJ mix" format, presenting completely new material in a seamless manner. This CD-mix, named Naïf, officially reinstates his label of the same name and is a sprawling tour of inner space featuring 19 distinct tracks from fellow producers (e.g. Margaret Dygas, Steve Bicknell, Jeroen Search, Pom Pom, Marco Shuttle, or Gunnar Haslam) along with an additional ten that feature Efdemin himself (either as soloist or collaborator). Naïf consists of completely unreleased/never-before-heard material from both himself and valued collaborators, all of which will eventually manifest as EP releases: two will be available on Curle Recordings, with an additional five on his own Naïf label. All of the individual contributions are combined here in a painstaking assembly process that took an entire year to complete, and the result is that the album flows with an almost paradoxical effortlessness from one style to the next. Besides the strong collection of tracks from well-known and undiscovered producers alike, it's Efdemin's own contributions that stand out. This becomes evident once the album opens with spectral, distant bells and homemade modular synth sounds leading into more unreleased Efdemin pieces, "Watte" and "Sirius", whose deep dub resonance will completely grab your attention. Later in the mix is electroacoustic textures of "Laveline", a collaboration with Konrad Sprenger. The standout composition on Naïf is Efdemin's infectious microtonal techno "Move Your Head" where Sollmann's voice hovers over distorted 808 patterns and immersive justly-tuned synth pads, pointing the way towards the formative, trailblazing influences that pre-dated techno: Silver Apples, This Heat and the drone aesthetic of Tony Conrad. A supporting cast of favorites turn in everything from blinding energy (Steve Bicknell's "Running Man"), to unrestrained ecstasy courtesy of Inland/Ed Davenport, to the overdriven lockstep groove of Cassegrain's Rhyw. Naïf is a release that will take several listens to fully explore, with each successive listen unearthing a new discovery. Also features Autolyse, Gürtler, WaWuWe, Kuf, Staffan Linzatti, DIN, Cassegrain, Pharaoh, Savas Pascalidis, Patrik Skoog Jinge, tobias., Nihad Tule, Aubrey, and Simone Gatto. Four-panel digipak; Includes download card.

STAMOU, TASOS Musique Con Crete LP
Starting with an artist residency Tasos Stamou visited the Greek island over the course of three summers, collecting field recordings, performing with local musicians, producing electronic compositions and gathering old records and tapes of traditional music of the region. The project resulted in the assembling of a unique sound collage which reflects his personal experience as a music visitor to this part of the Mediterranean. Tasos Stamou is an electroacoustic music composer, performer, alternative music technologist, and tutor. During a decade of sound performances and recordings Tasos Stamou developed a unique style of live electroacoustic composition. Long and continuous pieces are created live using a "portable electroacoustic music studio". His gear consists of acoustic (prepared strings, reeds, objects) and electronic instruments (handmade electronics, modular synthesizer systems soft synths). Based on sustained tonal textures and free improvised instrumental solos, his live compositions create a particular and unique atmosphere of ritual noise. Artwork by Tasos Stamou. Mastered by Rashad Becker. Edition of 300.

KEN, SUGAI Tele-n-Tech-Da LP
Japanese artist Sugai Ken presents a kaleidoscopic radio play inspired by the traditional Japanese art of Mingei. In Sugai Ken's own words: "In recent years I have been researching old Japanese culture and customs in order to deepen my musical production. I am still excited to find that there are many untouched roots yet to be discovered which only motivates me to pursuit my research further. As I dig deeper, I'm always struck with the general idea that 'everything has its own ground', otherwise known as rigid ideas and concepts. Indeed, it is important to have a clear ground to explore things from. Especially as our times are overloaded with too much information, things which are spoon fed to us will always be short lived, so for me it becomes a case of those rigid ideas becoming less flexible. One of the many benefits of computer music is being able to separate it from history/traditions and allowing you to simply enjoy mixing sounds and concepts, regardless of its original meaning. By being free from 'having to' make sense we can make creation much more enjoyable. When I made this album I put my priority in freedom, rather than being stuck with those rigid ideas and concepts. This way I could really enjoy and get deep into the 'mixology' of it all. Like my other works, Japanese is always a fundamental motif and I envision it like an imaginary radio drama by adding spontaneous dialogs throughout. I will be happy if listeners pay attention to these (and other) details and enjoy listening to my work." Artwork by Evan Crankshaw. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker. Edition of 500.

VA 25 YRS Distillery 2LP
25 years of Distillery. That's a memory-laden, even historical event for underground and club culture. Or let's just say, culture in general. Getting into detail about the impact, this club had for the last quarter-century, would fill a couple pages, so let's just state the obvious real quick: Distillery has witnessed and co-determined socio-cultural change and progress in its past. Be it in its hometown Leipzig, basically building up the city's infrastructure for club culture over the years. Or be it on national or international scale. It carries a legacy of being one of the longest-serving and one of the most influential clubs in Germany. At the same time, it's focus always lies ahead, sensing trends, running a booking that intersects the big players with the up and coming of an underground electronic music scene. With the same spirit that supported DJ/producers on their way to international careers, it brings up new talent. It is this spirit in particular that now finally led into the idea of mirroring the club's philosophy within the agenda of a record label. And as catalogue number one, unfolding a whole new chapter in Tille history, this anniversary compilation right here already nails what Distillery Records will be about. A conjunction of familiar faces and newcomers. A playground for residents, affiliates, and just great artists that the label likes. You'll find "Thursday Noon", the opening synth-driven house-banger of young blood Napoleon Dynamite next to deep and spaced-out techno courtesy of Tille-resident Chris Manura. Lars Christian Müller's atmospheric trip "No Future" next to Leipzig-scene-honcho Filburt who hands in a stomping and steaming cut, tinged by electro-references. You'll find a joint venture by Daniel Stefanik and Mathias Kaden that progresses from Detroit leanings into an affectionate piano finale, bass heavy breaks by Monkey Maffia, acid-grounded dub techno by genre-heavy weight Joel Mull, a rather odd take on techno by Georg Bigalke, and the record's mightiest bounce in form of Héctor Oak's take-no-prisoners-approach to move a crowd as the conclusion of this compilation. A compilation that's evidently curated with an all-killer-no-filler-agenda and the overall sensible approach to manifest the unique Distillery vibe on two plates of vinyl. Includes download code with three digital-only bonus tracks from Matthias Tanzmann, Thomas Stieler, and Sven Tasnadi.

LITTLE BOY BLUES, THE In The Woodland Of Weir CD
Early Dawn present a reissue of The Little Boy Blues' In The Woodland Of Weir, originally released in 1968. The late '60s seem like a lake of great music releases without a bottom. Whenever you think there is no way to go deeper into the mists of obscurity, you stumble over another crown jewel from the inner sanctum of garage rock, acid pop, and power psychedelia. The Little Boy Blues emerged from the simmering Chicago scene of the mid-to-late '60s where the contemporary beat fused with elements of soul, jazz, blues, and funk, tinged with dreamy harmonies of the most colorful kind to become acid and garage rock -- sometimes both at the same time. You could literally experience the development of fuzz pedals in rock music spinning those old records including "In The Woodland Of Weir". The sawing opening chords of "Cathedral" make sure you know what you are about to listen to. The buzzing heavy guitars raise dirt hand in hand with a sluggish beat before a pastoral organ melody divides the tune into half and after that the seething maelstrom of heaviness overruns you once again. There is more than just this dirty caveman blues rock; "Seed Of Love" is a slow psychedelic pop tune with some wild and explosive fuzzed-out lead guitar, wickedly insane flute kicking in from time to time and a bone-grinding organ to contrast the thought provoking vocal melody and the dreamy atmosphere. "The Great Train Robbery" hits you straight in the face as a brutal proto punk anthem, an aggressive, furious rock eruption with a rather monotonous vocal line. And "Mr. Tripp Wouldn't Listen" with some sweet string section on a carpet of utterly distorted rhythm guitars, howling and scrunching, spiced with desperate vocals that thrill you down to your bones. Hard garage rock for all freaks into US heroes such as The Seeds, The Count Five, The Third Bardo, and The Music Machine or English cult acts like The Troggs, The Who, and The Yardbirds, with some great outstanding songs on its score. Includes nine bonus tracks.

MANSON, CHARLES Sings LP
2018 repress. ESP-Disk present a reissue of Charles Manson's Sings, originally released as Lie: The Love and Terror Cult in 1970. Charles Manson visited New York City in the early '60s with his guitar and his songs in a vain search for recognition. Later, he had better luck in Beverly Hills, where famous musicians let him use their studio to produce this album. He has vocal backup from the women of the "family". During a stay in a San Francisco prison, he met a fellow inmate and gave him the album to release. While Manson was being tried and convicted of participation in his notorious murder spree, the government attempted to discredit the hippie movement by citing him as an example, hoping to stem the rising tide of anger among the population over the war in Vietnam. This album has achieved cult status among connoisseurs of '60s folk-rock. Personnel: Charles Manson - lead vocals, rhythm guitar, tympani; Bobby Beausoleil - electric guitar; Paul Watkins - French horn; Catherine Shore - violin; Dianne Lake - recorder; Steve Grogan - electric bass; Mary Brunner - flute, vocals on "People Say I'm No Good"; Nancy Pittman - vocals on "Arkansas"; Sandra Good, Catherine Share, Lynette Fromme, Nancy Pittman and Cho-Cho - backup vocals. TUTT BAND Tutt Band LP
LP version. Everland present a reissue of the Tutt Band's self-titled album, originally released in 1988. This is the only album from the Tutt Band known to ever be recorded. The ultra-rare and sought-after boogie-funk LP on Spoonful Records out of Phoenix, Arizona was released in 1988, but style-wise it sounds much more like being recorded in 1983 or 1984. It contains ten very solid and good tracks -- both club tunes and slow jams -- that all hit the required spot. There's also some treats for all Roger Troutman and vocoder lovers. Head straight to the ultra-dank tracks "Get It On" and "She's Got It Going". In retrospect the Tutt Band has been one of the little known but essential groups whom created the funky and beat-heavy, new jack swing sound that dominated American R&B from the mid-eighties and early nineties.

SNOOPY DEAN Wiggle That Thing LP
LP version. Everland present a reissue of Snoopy Dean's Wiggle That Thing, originally released in 1977. The late Nathaniel "Snoopy" Dean is one of those many underrated southern soul and blues men who never reached great fame outside their home ground. His legacy is deeply treasured though by hardcore black music followers. In the late sixties he instigated the now very sought-after group Third Guitar who recorded some great sides for the Rojac Records out of New York City. He subsequently became a member of the Deep City Band and started recording under his own name. In the early to mid-seventies Dean made five singles and an album Wiggle That Thing on Henry Stone's Blue Candle imprint which is being reissued here. The album -- originally released in 1977 -- contains a rare combination of deep, southern soul, funk, and blues in such a way that the LP really does not fall straight in neither category. In the '80s Snoopy Dean became a much in demand session musician as a guitarist in Miami and recorded at least two more albums that belong more in the blues and indie soul field. Unfortunately, Snoopy Dean died in 1998 due to complications arising from diabetes. He will always be remembered for his great album Wiggle That Thing.

GUNESH Gunesh (?????) LP
LP version. Everland Jazz present a reissue of Gunesh's ????? = Gunesh, originally released in 1980. The Gunesh Ensemble was founded in 1970 in Ashkhabad, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, then part of the Soviet Union. They started out as a vocal group with supporting musicians from Turkmenistan State Radio and TV. Later several young musicians came to play with them and the band's music became much more modern. The group began to play jazz-rock tightly intertwined with traditional Oriental music. With that new musical style, the band participated in some popular festivals around the Soviet Union. They received various awards and became very popular. Gunesh was always in the process of developing and they were one of the first and best local jazz-groups to organically combine the principles of jazz and melodic improvisation. The remarkably beautiful arrangements and polyrhythmic compositions were always further developed thematically. This process was highly praised at the Moscow competition With A Song On Life in 1977 where the ensemble became a prize-winner. The Organizing Committee of the Festival Spring Rhythms in Tbilisi (1980) named members Rishad Shafi the best drummer and Stanislav Morozov the best saxophonist. This album, their very fine first LP, was originally released in 1980 on the Soviet state label Melodyja and contains traditional Central Asian music in jazz-rock arrangements along with the appearance of a Vietnamese singer. The line-up has changed many times. Around 65 musicians have been a member of the group at some point in time.

AZYMUTH Azimuth LP
2018 repress. Far Out Recordings present a reissue of the seminal debut album from Azymuth, Azimüth, originally released in 1975. Having never seen a vinyl release outside of Brazil, Azimüth is considered a milestone in Brazilian music. Azymuth -- Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti, and Alex Malheiros, as well as Ariovaldo Contesini -- formed in the late '60s just as Os Mutantes released their debut record (1968). Whilst Mutantes were honing a psychedelic "Amazonian" version of western pop music, Azymuth were creating a futuristic, electric interpretation of US jazz -- also driven by the same rootsy Brazilian "swing" that Mutantes had harnessed. Bertrami was the drive behind Azymuth's sound -- a control freak and musical genius obsessed with the latest technology who wanted to use it to push the boundaries of music in a way that no one else in Brazil had done. His use of keyboards has drawn comparisons between Azymuth's work and Herbie Hancock's early '70s output, yet with its Brazilian swing Azymuth's electric jazz sound is unmistakably their own. Conti is an impulsive and an incredibly energetic drummer. Alex Malheiros, who learned his trade playing from the master of Brazilian swing Ed Lincoln, is one of Brazil's original groove masters. Bertrami rose to fame as an arranger in the mid-60s, and by the late '60s he was arranging for the queen of Brazilian music, Elis Regina. Released in summer 1975, the album was a minor commercial success selling 200,000 copies. Opening track "Linha do Horizonte" -- a sublime piece of melancholic electronic saudade where deep cinematic synths melt into gently strummed acoustic jazz guitar -- was chosen for a TV novella and went on to sell half a million, propelling Azymuth onto the Brazilian music scene. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint -- "Melô Dos Dois Bicudos" sees Azymuth plugging them into the Brazilian national grid for a slice of electrified psyched out samba funk with crashing military drums, shrieking sirens and psych synths. "Brazil" is a lolloping bass led groover with Bertrami's melody giving the track a charming, innocent naivety, and "Caça A Raposa" is a boogie jazz funk groover. Azimüth is the album that kick-started it all for them, the record that was the blueprint and definition of their "samba doido/crazy samba" sound. Comes in a gatefold sleeve; 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500.

WEEPING BONG BAND Weeping Bong Band LP
"Sub-underground super-groups are not common. This is less a function of the concept's oxymoronic nature than of the fiercely independent stance of musicians toiling in this area. By definition, they are doing what they do simply because they love it. It can be quite difficult to distract them from their main focus long enough to get them to do anything else. Weeping Bong Band is a lovely exception that proves this rule. Three members -- Clark Griffin, Wednesday Knudsen and PG Six -- are in the current line-up of Pigeons. One, Anthony Pasquarosa, has his own host of solo projects (Crystaline Roses, Gluebag, Burnt Envelope, etc.). And a final 'ghost member', Beverly Ketch, is half of the duo Viewer. Together, however, theirs is a rural psych engine that weeps as gently as a spring rain. This is high-provenance instrumental hippie spew from the apex of the Pioneer Valley. There's plenty of burbling psych guitar, laced with overtones that will make you conjure up visions of dark stoned nights. It is definitely music made in the day when marijuana had passed its medical-use-only status in the Commonwealth. Which is not to infer this music is unimbued with its own mystical curing properties, especially when played at mind-bending volume. Allow yourself to be bathed in the tears of the bong. Their sweet flow will wash away all traces of your sins." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 500.

DORA & SOPHIE COOPER, DELPHINE Divine Ekstasys LP
"First vinyl evidence of the dizzying, ongoing collaboration between France's Delphine Dora and West Yorkshire's Sophie Cooper. Delphine's piano, organ, vocals and extended improvisation techniques have been documented in various places, and always serve up oceanic slabs of pure aural mystery. Comparisons have been made to Charlemagne Palestine, Marian Zazeela and other experimentalists, although Ms. Dora has long maintained her compositions are structurally rooted in folk music. Suffice to say the results are usually otherworldly and stunning. Cooper's guitar, electronics, vocals and trombone have caused similar reactions (I am especially fond of her recent Globokar-like 'bone-investigations). And the pair's collusions (of which there have been several) are always eagerly anticipated. The main themes of the two sides of the LP are 'Invisible Gesture' and 'Sublime Gesture.' The 'Invisible' seems to involve more entwined vocals and a certain space-oid twinkle to the keys. There are also occasional flare-ups that recall Third Ear Band's music for Macbeth or some unknown collaboration between Comus and Paul Rutherford. The 'Sublime' adds heavier drone action to the process, as well as insertion of noise and classical 'events' to interact with the ghost vocals. It is a truly delirious spin." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

GOODARZI, OMEED Zoltar Hid All the Locks / Minnows LP
"Debut vinyl by the guitarist of Donkey No No presents two different sides of this mysterious maestro. 'Zoltar Hid All the Locks' is a full on studio quintet session where Jeremy Latch (formerly of the Grudges) played clarinet, Adam Langellotti (ex-Grudges, Sore Eros, etc.) played percussion and ran the board, Matt Robidoux (ex-Speedy Ortiz, Curse Purse, etc.) played guitar and drum box, and Jen Gelineau (Donkey No No, Egg Eggs, etc.) handled the fiddle. The sound on this ranges from Donkey No No's woodsy smoke house charm to segments that really channel early, just post-Barrett Floyd without doing any apery. The 'Minnows' side is all Omeed, doing solos tunesterism then taking on the brute fascism of Dumbledonny Trump the way only an American with a Middle Eastern background can. The side opens with Omeed working in an ur-American tradition (somewhere between Buck Owens' 'Act Naturally' and Paul Newman's version of 'Plastic Jesus' from Cool Hand Luke). From there, reality starts to get sliced, like shifting shards from the brain of Philip K Dick. Songs, constructions, faux-Sinatra homages and flat-out collages bend through each other in unexpected ways, culminating in sequential tape assemblages that says FUCK YOU TRUMP as loudly as anything I've yet heard. Jump on the Omeed train. Your children will be proud you did." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

HOLLOW DECK All The Roots LP
"Second album by Western Mass's most exciting live band is now in hand, and it's a swirling web of dooziness. Recorded by Ted Lee at Fayre Lawn, the team of Mia Friedman and Andy Allen have created a masterpiece of strange familiarities. Using a large array of instruments -- banjo, gourd banjo, fiddle, guitar, tenor sax, clarinet, flute, drum machine, etc. -- the duo easily transcends any real or imaginary boundaries of what's possible to do with just four hands. The results are as amazing as they are hard to categorize. Listening to the album for the umpteenth time, brings to mind a wide variety of things: an album I have of a high school production of Lerner & Lowe's Brigadoon (1954); Virgil Thomson's 1954 recording of Four Saints in Three Acts, his collaboration with Gertrude Stein; Kronos Quartet's cover of Harry Partch's 'Barstow' from Howl U.S.A. (1996); Big Blood's recent work with Elliot Schwartz (2016); etcetera. There is an air of mid-20th century avant-garde romanticism hanging like a veil over this project. It probably has something to do with the concept of creating a bridge between vernacular culture and experimental performance (even if that performance is unconsciously wrought), but I'm too damn tuckered to get to the bottom of it right now. Suffice to say, All The Roots is a mighty devil of a record. It fulfills the promise of Hollow Deck's live show. And that is saying a pant-load and a half." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

MITCHELL, NICOLE Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds 2LP
2018 repress. Double LP version. "Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds is Nicole Mitchell's second album for Chicago-based FPE Records. Recorded in May of 2015 at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, it features her longtime collaborators Renee Baker (violin), Tomeka Reid (cello, banjo), Alex Wing (electric guitar, oud) and Jovia Armstrong (percussion), along with new members Tatsu Aoki (bass, shamisen, taiko) and Kojiro Umezaki (shakuhachi). Also in the mix is Chicago artist, scholar and poet Avery R Young, who brings her lyrics to life with visceral humanity. Composer and flutist Nicole Mitchell, once hailed by Chicago Reader music critic Peter Margasak as the 'greatest living flutist in jazz', continues the work begun when jazz visionary Sun Ra and his Arkestra first touched down on Planet Earth and told humanity that space (outer and inner) is indeed the place. As with contemporary Afrofuturist pioneers like cosmic jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, post-everything beat maker Flying Lotus, R&B cyborg Janelle Monáe and dystopian noise-rappers Death Grips, she uses Afrofuturism as a platform to launch her own, unique vision. Her vast sound often encompasses contemporary classical, globally oriented fusion, gospel, spoken word, funk-inspired groove research and even brittle shards of avant-rock. Mandorla Awakening II collides dualities such as acoustic vs electric, country vs urban, simple vs complex, while also sounding through intercultural dialogue between Black, European and Pan-Asian improvisational languages. The outcome is a creative music suite that blurs musical styles into recognizable fragments that weave a unique sound fabric, where human emotion and the struggles of today swim."

PSYCHOLOGICAL STRATEGY BOARD Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows LP
Debut album by Psychological Strategy Board -- the soundtrack to director Richard Kovitch's 2017 film about the incredible, untold story of the British artist Penny Slinger and the traumatic events that led to the creation of her masterpiece, the 1977 photo-romance, An Exorcism. Paul Snowdon (Time Attendant) and Maybury played, recorded, and manipulated live performances (using synths, electronic boxes, and laptop) to create unique, often unsettling soundscapes inspired by the work of Slinger. Penny Slinger embraced her generation's quest for personal and sexual liberation, and channeled these desires into her ground-breaking collage, films, and sculptures. So powerful was her vision that 45 years later her work is still influencing contemporary artists. Richard Kovitch's film documents Penny Slinger's life during this intense period of creativity and considers the relevance of her work to subsequent generations. From the grey suburbs of Surrey, via the Kings Road art scene of Swinging London, all the way to the galleries of Los Angeles, New York, and Tokyo, and detailing her extraordinary collaborations with the cult filmmakers Peter Whitehead, Jack Bond, and Jane Arden, this is a portrait of an artist expressing herself so definitively, fresh insight is gained into the 1960s counter-culture and art's power to liberate is celebrated.

Their deep funk and hard-as-nails beats and overall production put them in a perfect position to make an impression with fans, no matter where those fans were. The group boasted a triple threat of MCs -- E-Swift (who also produced), Tash and J-Ro -- and they packed a strong punch with their 1993 debut, 21 & Over. It will surprise no one from names of the group and the album, but drinking takes up a lot of time here, including classic tracks -- which doubled as album singles -- like the rolling, ultra-funky 'Make Room' and the hilarious 'Only When I'm Drunk,' the latter fueled by the classic block-party break 'Seven Minutes Of Funk.' One lesser-known element of the group's debut was the introduction of the now mythical producer and MC Madlib, who produced the dusty 'Mary Jane' and the ridiculously funky, churning 'Turn Tha Party Out' (under the name The Loot Pack, with DJ Romes). Both tracks are dope as hell, and perfectly fit the group's sound, showing that they also had an ear for up-and-coming talent. An interesting old-school angle on the album is that several tracks feature LA legend King Tee on production and vocals ('Last Call'; 'Soda Pop' and 'Bullshit'). Tee was an early supporter of the trio who helped to oversee the album for Loud Records after they appeared on his banging 1992 single 'Got It Bad Y'all.' There's not a bum track in the bunch here, and younger rap fans just getting hip to them will undoubtedly be asking where the Alkaholiks have been all their lives."

OTT, CHRISTINE Tabu CD
Just a few months after the release of her highly acclaimed album, Only Silence Remains (GZH 066CD/LP, 2016), Christine Ott proposed a new album to Gizeh Records for its Dark Peak Series. Tabu is an original, live soundtrack, composed in 2012 for the movie of the same name by F.W. Murnau and Robert Flaherty and a performance that she's playing regularly as a cine?-concert throughout France and Europe. The magic, the beauty, and the incredible light of the movie associated to its astonishing modernity have contributed to the choice of the composer. Christine has been shattered and very moved by the movie, the story of an impossible love on Bora-Bora island, between Matahi, a young pearl diver, and Reri, a young woman promised to the gods. The circumstances of the death of Murnau, prematurely died in a car accident before the film premiere, emphasizes the mystery around this movie. More than a cine?-concert, Ott's creation is a black pearl, as is Murnau's ultimate movie. Ott's creation alternates avant-garde tracks with ondes Martenot and modern-classic piano pieces, sometimes light and delicate, sometimes dark and fune real . This cinematographic journey is ending with the original version of "Tempe?te", composed for the last scene of the movie, a stunning piece that Ott re-worked for Only Silence Remains. With Tabu, Christine Ott combines her passion for images and cinema to musical composition, creating new sound territories along the way. After lots of experiments down different paths, and collaborations with the likes of Yann Tiersen, Radiohead, Tindersticks, Syd Matters, and Foudre!, Ott here releases her taste for a kind of minimalistic chamber music. Initial pressing CD released via Gizeh Records in 2016."Christine Ott is giving us, with this new album, her first inspiration to the screen -- spontaneous and sometimes fragile. There is indeed a secret link which joins together Reri, daughter of the water, to Christine, sister of the ondes Martenot. In these pure moments when Ott's piano becomes a waterfall, a river, an ocean. In these heartbreaking moments when the composer, without ever over-playing manages to simply let go, thanks to a very mysterious and fascinating instrument, the tears that the audience may not always dare to have." --Thierry Me?ranger, Les Cahiers du Cine?ma

LARAAJI Ambient 3: Day of Radiance LP+CD
2018 repress; LP version. 180-gram vinyl. Gatefold sleeve. Includes CD. 2015 remastered reissue. Includes lengthy interview with Laraaji. Laraaji's glistening 1980 debut Ambient 3: Day of Radiance has from the beginning been considered an outlier. Though widely celebrated at that the time of its original release (as the third installment in Brian Eno's emerging ambient music series), the album also brought with it an aura of mystification. Where did it fit in? An uncharted synthesis of resonating zither textures, interlocking hammered rhythms, and 3-D sound treatments (courtesy of Eno), Day of Radiance seemed to push open many doors at once, ambient music being only one of them. Though there are certainly aspects of the album that find sonic common ground with other Eno-related "ambient" projects (on the tracks "Meditation #1" and "Meditation #2" in particular), the album is not easily boxed into a singular genre. Day of Radiance also mines the ethereal spiritualism of late-'70s new age music (of which Laraaji is considered a pioneer), the harmonic and rhythmic repetitions of American minimalists Terry Riley and Steve Reich, and traditional global sounds from India and Java (particularly gamelan music). And while Laraaji never explicitly embraced the "Fourth World" theories of fellow visionary and Eno collaborator Jon Hassell, Day of Radiance echoes a kindred exploratory exoticism. In the late '70s Brian Eno had relocated to New York City from London and had begun a period of fertile intersections with musicians in his adopted home. Laraaji recounts how he and Eno first crossed paths: "I was playing [zither] in Washington Square Park and I usually play with my eyes closed because I get into meditative trance states that way, and opening my eyes and collecting my little financial reward from that evening, there was a note, on notebook paper -- it looked like it had been ripped from somebody's expensive notebook -- there was a note that says 'Dear sir, kindly excuse this impromptu piece of message, I was wondering if you would be interested in talking about participating in a recording project I am doing, signed: Brian Eno.'" The album was completed in two sessions; the first one produced the faster, pulsing "Dance" compositions (on the A-side) and the second session yielded something closer to Eno's own ambient constructs -- slow zither washes and waves with more pronounced sound enhancements (on the B-side). While the album is deceptively simple in its construction, closer listening reveals its extraordinary depth of field and its polymath influences.

SAZ'ISO At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me: The Joys and Sorrows of Southern Albanian Song CD
Repressed. "Why not give yourself a break from the unending cavalcade of modern high-speed insanity, and rest up with this album of deep soul from Southern Albania." --Ry CooderBrazilian samba, Bosnian Sevdah, New Orleans jazz, Cuban son -- and Albanian Saze! The turn of the last century saw mass migrations to the world's cities with rural people bringing their music with them, adapting their traditions to new circumstances and modern instruments. Of all these great musical forms, the mesmerizing arabesques, joyful dances, and heart-breaking laments of Saze are among the least recorded, and they remain largely unknown outside Albania. At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me: The Joys and Sorrows of Southern Albanian Song is the debut of Saz'iso, a group of virtuoso musicians and legendary singers assembled by veteran producer Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, ¡Cubanismo!, Songhai) and his co-producers, Edit Pula and Andrea Goertler. The album was recorded live, with no overdubs, by Grammy-winning engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Ali Farka Touré, Orchestra Baobab) over three days of October 2016 at the Akademia e Filmit dhe Multimedias Marubi in Tirana, Albania. The music of Southern Albania is iso-polyphonic, which means that it combines at least two melodic vocal lines, a lead (marrës, the "taker") and a second (prerës, the "cutter"), with a multi-voiced drone or iso. When manufactured "tempered" instruments arrived in the region in the late 19th century, Saze ensembles were born; clarinets and violins took on the roles of the lead and second voices while lutes carried the iso. As Vasil S. Tole, Albania's leading expert on iso-polyphony -- and an inspiring advisor to this project -- puts it: "Saze remains to this day the musical language of the cities of Southern Albania, where East and West embraced when European instruments collided with the magic of a cappella iso-polyphony, and where life and death still coexist in a sound that is truly unique." Donika Pecallari: voice; Adrianna Thanou: voice; Robert Tralo: voice; Aurel Qirjo: violin and voice; Telando Feto: clarinet; Agron Murat: llautë (lute); Agron Nasi: dajre (frame drum); Pëllumb Meta: fyell (flute) and voice.

CARETAKER, THE Persistent Repetition Of Phrases CD
2018 repress. Having already been chosen as one of The Wire magazine's top 10 albums of 2008, as well as featuring on numerous "end-of year" charts, The Caretaker's highly-acclaimed Persistent Repetition Of Phrases is finally made available on CD again -- this time on The Caretaker's own History Always Favours The Winners label. James Kirby's work as The Caretaker has always dealt with the suggestion of haunted memory and the obscuring of temporal motion, and this album makes that more explicit than ever, with titles that reference amnesia, Alzheimer's, past life regression and other such memory misfires and short circuits. Musically, this album might be compared to Philip Jeck's manipulated vinyl tracts, featuring similarly oceanic swells of crackle and dust, with faded pianos or big band sounds wafting wraith-like across the mix. After conjuring the sinister atmospherics of The Shining with his debut album Selected Memories From The Haunted Ballroom, The Caretaker has been chasing this idea of sound leaving its indelible mark on a space and time, so consequently these creepy, semi-dissolved musical passages sound no more tangible than shadows, and the album for the most part comes across as some sort of séance held via wax cylinder.

CARETAKER, THE Patience (After Sebald) CD
2018 repress. James Leyland Kirby returns in 2012 with his long-in-the-making soundtrack to Grant Gee's film about W.G. Sebald. Patience (After Sebald) is a multi-layered film essay on landscape, art, history, life and loss by the acclaimed documentary film-maker Grant Gee. It is an exploration of the work and influence of German writer W.G. Sebald (1944-2001), told via a long walk through coastal East Anglia tracking his most famous book The Rings Of Saturn (1995). The book mixes history, travelogue, memoir, meditation, fiction and images to explore the personal, public and often overlooked histories of Suffolk. In 2009, Grant approached The Caretaker to work on a soundtrack for this work and he sourced out-of-copyright Franz Schubert works from 1927 including the famous work "Winterreise." The soundtrack has been pieced together using snippets and fragments of this source material. The CD album artwork features another specially-commissioned painting by Ivan Seal, and comes in a gatefold digifile sleeve. Mastered and cut at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering.

CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 4 2LP
The Caretaker slips beyond recognition in the first "post awareness" stage of Everywhere At The End Of Time. The ability to recall singular memories gives way to confusions and horror. It's the beginning of an eventual process where all memories begin to become more fluid through entanglements, repetition, and rupture. Though the metaphoric device of worn-down ballroom 78s and Jack Nicholson's descent into madness in The Shining (1980), The Caretaker connotes the transitory cognitive breakdown of moderate into severe late stage dementia. Memories of the good times are recollected in glitching pyknoleptic flashes as the music struggles to follow consistent lines of thought, instead fluctuating between a fractured mosaic of ideas and elusive emotive gestures, but still occasionally able to gather coherent thoughts. In aesthetic, the sieve-like mind state of Stage 4 vacillates a serene sort of psychedelia with utterly paranoid and petrifying mental subsidence. Smudged traces of sublimated musical hall memories give way to shocking tracts of atonality and discord with runaway rhythmic logic, perpetually tumbling farther into states of mind perhaps best compared with K-Hole-like dimensions or the babble of after-hours psychonautic journeys. The concision of previous stages is here replaced with wandering, side-long tracts. Three of those are titled "Post Awareness Confusions" and correspondingly explore and reflect agitated, irritable mindsets as they navigate an ephemeral, confusing complexity of structures. The other piece is called "Temporary Bliss State" and starkly contrasts the other parts in a coherently lush traverse of ambient crackle and glittering melody... Artwork by Ivan Seal. Mastered and cut by Lupo. Double-LP comes in gatefold sleeve.

VA Spiritual Jazz 5: The World 2LP
2018 repress. Double LP version, housed in a thick, embossed gatefold sleeve. Subtitle: Esoteric, Modal and Deep Jazz from Around the World, 1961-79. Until it was swept aside by the pop explosion of the 1960s, jazz was the most popular modern sound on earth. From the New World and the Caribbean to Africa, across the Soviet Bloc and the British Empire to the Far East, jazz music was embraced, adopted, played and enjoyed. Having examined spiritual jazz as it was expressed in the U.S., and followed its messengers and influences in Europe, this fifth installment of Jazzman's Spiritual Jazz series presents jazz from the rest of the world: a collection of jazz messages hailing from the four corners of the world that are united in their diverse treatment of the jazz idiom. Jazz might have been the music of America, but in its beginnings it was not a purely American creation. The long story of its development stretches across the Atlantic, from Africa to the crucibles of slavery in the Caribbean and the Americas, both North and South. It was a music that ultimately emerged from the varied and resilient cultural achievements of Africans brought to the New World in bondage, and who brought with them a multiplicity of musical traditions. Evolution and development continued and, like a dandelion dispersing its airborne seeds via the wind, the sounds of jazz were carried around the world on the airwaves, record sales and by travelling musicians. In whichever continent the form took root, the individual, ethnic and cultural circumstances of the musicians decided the flavors and nuances of the jazz they created. This volume of Spiritual Jazz presents some of the rarest and most extraordinary global jazz recordings. Jazzman have covered some of the wider world's best known yet still underexposed jazz scenes -- places such as Argentina and South Africa, as well as some of the world's most obscure. There are recordings here made for major labels, and recordings issued privately. Very few of them have seen any release outside of their country of origin prior to this collection. But all of them speak of a period when jazz was a global musical lingua franca, spoken with ease by musicians who headed out into the night to produce their own distinctly local translations. This is esoteric jazz, modal jazz, spiritual jazz -- as played by musicians from around the world. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes. Comprehensive liner notes with added individual notes on each track and original stories direct from the musicians involved.

NATIONAL JAZZ TRIO OF SCOTLAND, THE Standards Vol. IV CD
On their latest album, Standards Vol. IV, the National Jazz Trio Of Scotland continue their engagement with classic and outsider pop traditions, subtly building on their characteristic blend of beguiling melodies and spare arrangements. There is even, dare we say it, a hint of jazz. Oblique visions of jazz aside, the album's most striking development is its focus on a single lead vocalist in Kate Sudgen, who has an understated approach with a real emotional pull. This is the first in a proposed series of albums to feature one singer from the NJTOS, with Gerard Black and Aby Vulliamy to follow. In 2012, Wells won the inaugural Scottish Album Of The Year award for Everything's Getting Older (2011), a collaboration with Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat. In 2011 he released Lemondale, recorded with Japan-based musicians, including Jim O'Rourke and Saya of Tenniscoats. Four years later, he assembled a stellar cast of musicians including Annette Peacock and Yo La Tengo for Nursery Rhymes, an exploration of the darker side of children's songs. Wells's penchant for détournement and bittersweet irony crops up throughout Standards Vol. IV. Take "Tinnitus Lullaby", where Sudgen softly sings over the melancholy twinkling of a music box like synth. "Anticipated Sentence" makes a wry reference to the Sinatra standard "I've Got The World On A String", a song Wells dislikes intensely. In Wells's song. Kohler's cheerful refrain of "What a world, what a life!" is twisted into something altogether darker, with the string around the protagonist's finger becoming a noose around their neck. "Move" is a vivid portrait of depression, where the protagonist spends all day in bed, listening to the sounds of helicopters buzzing overhead. Yet Wells animates the song with bossa nova guitar and clave rhythms, creating an effect that is, depending how you read it, ironic or uplifting. In addition to the ten Wells originals and a new version of the Aidan Moffat collaboration "Far From You", Standards Vol. IV features a cover of Richard Youngs's "Summer's Edge" from the latter's 2005 masterpiece Summer Wanderer. Wells has known Youngs since the 1990s, when they worked together with Future Pilot AKA. The National Jazz Trio's version taps into the uncanny pastoralism of the original, with Sudgen's clear reading of the melody set against Wells's glistening keyboard samples. Standards Vol. IV is an album characterized by its gorgeous blend of sophistication and vulnerability.

SEARCH PARTY, THE Montgomery Chapel LP

Having left Wisconsin to join a burgeoning West Coast religious scene, Freund made his way to San Francisco in 1968 to lay down this sole effort with some of his students. The result is a spooky trip that's equal parts acid-soaked mind expansion and God. Laced with haunting vocals and dreamlike passages, sinister farfisa, blasts of fuzz guitar, and downer lyrics, Montgomery Chapel is psychedelic music at its most evocative and thanks to its depth and sense of anxiety, most truly spiritual. The ominous nine-minute drifter 'So Many Things Have Got Me Down,' for example, tackles the difficulties of an unfulfilled married life, depression and spiritual apathy, all while riding a stripped down, grooving beat. If you can imagine a lo-fi United States of America/Jefferson Airplane hybrid, you have an idea of how cool this band sounds. Only 600 copies were pressed and issued on the custom Century label; they've become holy grails of collectors. MOUVEMENTS Mouvements CD
Mental Experience present the first ever reissue of Mouvements, originally released in 1973. An impossible to find artifact from the Swiss underground avant-garde scene of Geneva, originally released as a private boxset limited to 150 copies in 1973, only sold at art galleries. A unique, instrumental mix of free-jazz, classical, psych-rock, folk, improv, kraut, funk, and musique-concrete with tape effects. In the late 60s, musician/guitar player Christian Oestreicher, "a savage in the era of twist and free jazz", met artist and painter Richard Reimann, famous for his optical art, at the Aurora art gallery in Geneva. Fueled by the artistic creativity from this underground scene, where jazz and rock musicians rubbed shoulders with artists, poets, and painters, Christian ideated the Mouvements project, enrolling his friend Richard to create the artwork. Christian was a trained guitar player with diverse influences: Ornette Coleman, Chuck Berry, Zappa, Soft Machine. He envisioned Mouvements as a concept album and he asked some of his musician friends from the jazz/rock scene to join in for the recordings: among them, Jean-François Boillat (of Boillat-Thérace), Blaise Català, Jerry Chardonnens. The album sessions took place at an occupied mansion during 1972, using three Revox machines. The musicians played standing in a circle and there was lot of room for improvisation. Tape effects and a small portable synth were also used. The result was released in 1973 as a hand-numbered, deluxe boxset limited to 150 copies, including a series of Richard Reimann's lithographies and inserts. For this, the first ever reissue, Mental Experience have created a new, more affordable edition with new artwork, including an insert with liner notes and previously unreleased photos. RIBA, PAU Taxista! 7"
Reissue. Originally released in 1967. Pau Riba : "I must have been seventeen, eighteen. I was at the peak of adolescence, and I had found out that, besides pop and rock, there was folk music and that, intimately linked to folk, there was this thing called protest song. I had also found out that, even without trying, my manner of expression was prone to surrealism. I don't think -- or remember -- the process being as conscious and thoughtful as what I'm describing now, but I guess that, in the back of my mind, my ideas must have taken shape in a similar manner."

JOHN'S CHILDREN Desdemona EP 7"
"Marc Bolan was only a member of John's Children for a few short months, but the experience would have an indelible impact on the future trajectory of his music. . . . The group's first single for Track would be a Bolan composition, 'Desdemona'. . . . The next single, 'Midsummer Night's Scene', was scheduled for release in July but was cancelled at the last minute. . . . Bolan departed [...] but John's Children recorded one more of his songs, 'Mustang Ford', which they repurposed as 'Go-Go Girl' . . ." --Mike Stax, Ugly Things

ANSWER CODE REQUEST Gens CD
Answer Code Request returns with his sophomore album Gens on Ostgut Ton, entering darker but equally bass-heavy territory. Answer Code Request's 2014 debut Code (OSTGUT 031CD/017LP, 2014) was an exciting moment for electronic music in Berlin. As a hybrid gesture, the album's spirit recalled an especially fruitful era in the German capital from the mid-90s to early 2000s, when dub and pad-driven Detroit techno cross-pollinated with Berlin's industrial aesthetic to create one of the city's most exciting musical chapters. Today the musical vision offered by Berghain resident Answer Code Request, real name Patrick Gra?ser, has proved far-sighted. While at first glance electronic music in 2018 seems increasingly balkanized, borders between genres have once again become fuzzier. Now, on his follow up album Gens, Gra?ser looks beyond the bass euphoria of Code toward darker horizons and a desolate atmosphere befitting of current global circumstances. In a sense, Gens (Latin for "tribe" or "lineage") reverses the notion of the hardcore continuum as proposed by music journalist Simon Reynolds; embedded in a tradition of US and continental European techno, Gra?ser seeks its disruption through hardcore outgrowths, from ambient jungle to later variations of British bass music and IDM. On Gens, the unsettling atmosphere is established early on with the fading rave opener of the album's synonymous title track, and continues through the scrambled military communications and post dubstep rhythms of "Sphera". From there, sci-fi pads, heavy phasing, and alien syncopation lead explorative third track "Ab Intus" out into space. A glimmer of otherworldly positivity arrives with the warm, distorted breakbeats and interwoven synth melodies of album standout "knbn2", while Gra?ser melds jungle and techno, "Amen", and 4/4 kicks, on his most dancefloor-oriented "Cicadae". Beatless moments of ambient melancholy lay a foundation for the second half of album, where soon the faster, more hectic stereo delays, broken rhythms, and heavy bassweight of "Audax" and "Tu" shift the focus back and forth between double and half-time. The hyper-distorted bassline, synthesized ember crackling, and contemplative melody of heavy album closer "An Unattainable Distance" provides perhaps the most otherworldly moment on Gens. Here, Gra?ser's massive sound trudges away from the dancefloor with a slow, resounding kick drum, pounding off in the distance and into an electronic abyss. On Gens, Gra?ser continues to offer an alternative, bass-heavy, and groove-based path forward for techno -- one that both challenges listeners and leads them through a sonic narrative.

AERA The Sound Path 2LP
Double LP version. Includes download code. Born in the high north of Germany and now a Berlin resident, Ralf Schmidt, aka Aera, first appeared on the electronic music map when he established his own Aleph Music label back in 2010. With only a handful of releases, Aera was able to lay out his very own musically topography on the cutting edges between house, psychedelia, and breakbeats. This colorful mix culminated on his debut album Offseason Traveller in 2013 (ALEPH 001CD/LP), resonating the past forty years of electronic music, which brought him the attention of a wider audience as well as fellow DJs and producers. So it was a logical consequence that his talent also attracted other labels and lead to widely praised releases on Innervisions, Maeve, or John Talabot's Hivern Discs. With these, Aera's sound bloomed further into bubbly acid and trancey territories and his fine reputation as a singular producer, travelling DJ, and remixer flourished. With The Sound Path Aera continues his musical travels on Permanent Vacation. His second album is the most coherent and definitely most personal work to date. Here, he has perfected his sound even further -- adding nuances from the meadows of new age, kraut cliffs, and high-flying kites of ambient. Complete with the cinematic and natural qualities of Ralf's music, it will draw you in deeply through a great variety of landscapes before your inner eye. However, you'll never lose track, because this path is beautifully illuminated.

CONNAN MOCKASIN Caramel LP
2018 repress, now on 180 gram vinyl; the second solo album by New Zealand psychedelic pop musician Connan Mockasin, originally released in 2013. "Taking his talents for strangeness and mood-making in a very different direction, Connan Mockasin's second solo album is a far cry from the whimsical psych pop he made with the Mockasins, and pretty far removed from his acclaimed 2010 album, Forever Dolphin Love. Yet Caramel does take musical and thematic inspiration from that album's poignantly woozy title track, which Erol Alkan reworked into an indie club hit. . . . the album overflows with sweetly sensual, acid rock-meets-R&B songs and guitars so languid they seem to stretch and drip." --AllMusic

WILLIAMS, MURPHY She Is My Woman LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Murphy Williams's She Is My Woman, originally released in 1981. "She Is My Woman is Murphy William's loose, funky and spontaneous call to the dance floor. It's an infectious collection of good-time tunes that the band seem to be enjoying as much as the listener. Williams was a stalwart of the Nigerian music scene, joining Godwin Omabuwa's Cassanova Dandies at 17 before becoming one of the two lead vocalists of The Apostles from Aba. He was famous for his distinctive four-octave voice, a voice that legendary label boss, Godwin Tabansi decided was perfectly suited to the new disco sound that was gripping Nigeria. The title track gets the party started with Felix Liberty providing the good-time guitar riffs, Friday Pozzo on congas and Sonny Enang keeping it light on keyboards. The vibe is tight and bright, breathy a breezy charm into disc-tied versions of Igbo folk songs "Selense" and "Ima Obi O". The undoubted highlight of the album is "Get On Up", a certifiable disco classic that would slay any dancefloor anywhere in the world. It's funky, it's fun and by the time the lyrics implore the listener to get on up and dance their feet have already been convinced by the music. Put it on and it's guaranteed to get any party started." --Peter Moore

ARIKON The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling LP
Arikon is a solo project of Berlin-based drummer and producer, Arik Hayut -- half of doom-tech duo Gainstage with Pierce Warnecke. Loyal to the sonic concepts of Gainstage, Arikon presents The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling, a solo enterprise into deepest "drum & drone". Hypnotizing distorted polyrhythms puncture through shards of fragmented melodies, producing potent mixtures of desperate tin can banging, a panoramic sonic scope, and the bleakest of sound system nightmares. Across the album, Arikon deploys an arsenal of samples plus electronic, acoustic, and self-constructed percussion instruments, constructing eight powerful productions that manage to embody both brute force and delicate decay. Formerly active in Tel Aviv's leftfield experimental scene during the '90s, Hayut made Berlin his permanent home for working on his own projects while composing and performing music for off-theater and contemporary dance. In 2004, a severe health crisis initially threw Hayut into crisis, slowing down his activity to a standstill. However, the precarious process of his fortunate recovery contributed to Hayut involving himself more deeply with concepts of time, death, and decay. Inspired by the decadent still life paintings of the Flemish Baroque, the cover artwork for The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling comprises a bowl of decomposing fruit. Like the music, its aim is to illustrate the beauty and perfection of the decay process, whilst also referring to the west's hyper-capitalistic, technology-centric culture. The songs are inspired by the "beasts of holiness" -- mythological monsters that appear in the Hebrew bible and the Jewish apocrypha (non-canonical scriptures). There's the punching of bassy thuds out of an oceanic ambient swell throughout "Tanin Gadol", named after the ancient water monster of Babylonian times. The dense net of fumbling scrapes and amp-busting hits of noise on "Nahash Akalaton" similarly refer to a titular sea-snake monster, its tendrils lashing out of the speakers aggressively. These demons symbolize a force of evil equal in power, yet in direct opposition to the monotheistic deity of their time. They were therefore neither acknowledged nor canonized in much dominant scripture. Arikon invokes these demons across The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling, setting them loose across these gnarled noisy chambers of pummeling percussion and cracked sampled detritus.

Eilbacher performs solo and also with Matmos, as well as in bands including Horse Lords and SEF III. Max explains: "These recordings originated with a system created on my computer that played abstract samples of a piano. I discovered the system worked better using only a select few of the many piano sounds I had recorded and intended to use. I found it also worked well with no piano at all. Instead, I employed white noise, a solid tone, and wavefolders. Randomly generated patterns control the sequencing, routings and various sound parameters in the system. I created rules for my system based off of my crude understanding of Bertrand Russell's Paradox theory that then modulates those patterns" Pro-dubbed, smoky clear cassettes featuring double-sided, hand silk-screened covers designed by Ren Schofield (Container). HEY COLOSSUS RRR 2LP
RRR was Hey Colossus's seventh album, originally released back in 2011 by Riot Season on CD and a ridiculously limited LP. The band had a weekend booked in at The Dropout Studio, Camberwell, in the winter of 2010. They were going to do "some recording". The Friday of the weekend the six-piece played a show at The Windmill in Brixton. The show was a typical (of the time) debauched affair, in the post-show glow the band asked Jon (Notorious Hi-Fi Killers) and Leon (Shit And Shine) to come down to the session the following day: Bring guitars, what can go wrong? By noon they hadn't shown up so they got called: Where are you? Neither believed the offer to be true, by 1 PM they showed up with guitar and synth in tow. An hour later RRR was being recorded by the now eight-piece band, lights down, volume up. Over 48 hours it was done. This reissue comes in a 350gsm printed sleeve wide-spined sleeve; Includes insert and download code; No repress; limited edition of 400.The legendary Peter Kemp, had this to say: "The record starts off with slow guitars and screaming ghostly voices like from a horror film, this first track ends with some talking and then goes into the next song which sounds like they are swinging the guitars around their heads and banging them on the floor....there are dark voices screaming ARRRRRRRRGGGHHHHH ARRRRRRRRRGGGGHHH ....The next song does sound a bit more Spanish as it starts with a guitar which sounds like a Spanish church bell and a deep voice which sounds like somebody praying and another voice which sounds like somebody dying....The closing song is faster and has talking in it and what sounds like a priest in the background and then lots of loud guitars come in - it is a good way to finish the record. Overall I think this was very good record by a brilliant band and I would give it ten out of ten."

Running Back welcomes Andreas Grosser for the start of the label's non-dancefloor series Running Back Incantations. Think Tornado Wallace's Lonely Planet (RB 009CD/LP, 2017) or Suzanne Kraft's Missum (RB 046LP, 2014) who both would have been good and early contenders for a series like this, and you are half way there. Andres Grosser though, was "there" and that way before. Probably best-known for his 1987 collaboration Babel with Klaus Schulze (1987), Grosser is a bit of a dark horse in the universe whose big bang was krautrock and that went on to be called cosmic, space music or simply new age. A native East-Berliner, Grosser crossed the Wall in 1981 and next to studying piano, his day job was to advise, sell, maintain, and invent electronic music instruments. Naturally, Grosser had a good connection to and support from local Berlin musicians and groups, while working at night in his own studio and in those of others. Fast forward 37 years and Andreas is now one the world's leading microphone technicians specializing in German and Austrian vintage types. Venite Visum is an anthology of recordings made between 1976 and 1980. Released in 1981 on UK's York House Recordings as a cassette-only release, it features some of the most out-there, hypnotic, and still state-of-the art space music known to man. For the first time transferred onto vinyl and compact disc, it was perhaps best described by one reviewer at the time as; "powerfully relentless, repetitive themes which are constantly embellished and subjected to variations in tone colour and instrumentations. The music surges, coming in waves that approach and recede, but with each surge the waves seem to be higher up the shore." Now carefully transferred from an archived tape, remastered, and compiled here, it features the previously unreleased and no less mesmerizing "The Quantum Jump". This is the debut album by K-S.H.E (Kami-Sakunobe House Explosion), a project from internationally-celebrated producer, label owner and DJ, Terre Thaemlitz, first released exclusively in Japan on Terre's private label Comatonse Recordings in 2006. Routes Not Roots combines Terre Thaemlitz's notorious "fag-jazz" sound with the classic New York deep house and cross-over dancefloor sensibility of DJ Sprinkles' Deeperama series. The results are spacious, bass-heavy, epic dance mixes filled with dark humor and harsh realities. As people have come to expect of Thaemlitz releases, Routes Not Roots mixes a wide range of social themes such as identity vs. immigrant status; community vs. tranny-on-tranny violence; authenticity vs. cultural decontextualization; openly gay African-American club imagery vs. gay sex on the Down-Low; innocence vs. childhood fantasies of violence; and more. From HIV drug trials to tranny and women's unemployment rates to sexually amorphous Japanese cross-dressers posing as high school girls, K-S.H.E doesn't miss a beat. This album contains 12 amazing cuts and is clearly one of the best house albums, ever. "Today's dancefloors are wakes in remembrance of a mythological era of openness that never was. PAUL, ASHLEY Lost In Shadows LP
Singular avant-garde voice Ashley Paul commits a bewitching debut to Slip with Lost In Shadows; a tender yet discordant suite inspired by her new role as mother to a young child. Few would call Ashley's music "easy", but it is also heavily rewarding in its own, uncompromising way and now finds its audience on the acclaimed Slip imprint amid a roster of boundary-morphing composers including Chaines, Mica Levi & Oliver Coates, Yeah You, and Laurie Tompkins. Recorded over three weeks at FUGA in Zaragoza, Spain and premiered at Counterflows 2017, on Lost In Shadows the multi-instrumentalist plays guitar, sax, clarinet, voice, and percussion. In a mark of distance traveled since her last album, however, she draws on recent collaborations and work with pre-eminent composers such as Rashad Becker, Lucy Railton, and Rhys Chatham to also delegate roles to a new ensemble of players on tuba, baritone sax, cello and percussion, who serve to render the dynamics of her music with stronger attention to bass rhythms and intricate, iridescent dissonance. The expanded personnel lend new flesh to Ashley's work, hinging around her tremulous vocals and bringing her ideas to life in 11 parts that hold to a perceptive knife edge between lullaby-like and restlessly tooth-achy: mixing the off-key filigree of her vocals at asymmetric tonal angles to the instrumentals -- a solution of jazz, chamber music, modern composition, and folk craft expressing a complexity of ideas that may well have fallen apart if handled by composers unable to hold their nerve quite as well as Ashley. As with all her works, a sense of intuitive, instinctive alchemy is at the core of Lost In Shadows, as Ashley's jarring tonal juxtapositions and her own elusive vocals act out a metaphor for the challenge of nurturing new relationships in testing circumstances, an experience she describes as "many hours spent awake at night in a dream like state of half consciousness, darkness and solitude; an overwhelming feeling of loneliness and exhaustion made light by a profound new love." Ultimately, the results are cranky as much as delirious, uncannily relaying a state of mind and sensations which will only ever be felt by some of its potential listeners yet offers myriad possibilities for interpretation to all. It has now been re-landscaped into a larger-scale, eight-track album. A collection of instrumentals, with nods to Brian Eno, Talk Talk, Richard Thompson, Vini Reilly, and Felt's Maurice Deebank, Innerland highlights Mark's incredible musicianship, positioning his guitar rather than his voice as the focal point of the music. Soundway Records present 24 Hours in a Disco 1978-1982, seven cuts of relentless disco grooves from the sublimely gifted Kiki Gyan. Hailed as Africa's answer to Stevie Wonder, Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist Kiki Gyan was a musical wunderkind, who, by 1975 had risen from the lowly status of high school dropout to being ranked eighth in a poll of the greatest keyboardists in the world (occupying the rarefied air of the top 10 with heavyweights like Steve Winwood, Billy Preston, and Stevie Wonder) as well as becoming an in-demand session player in the top recording studios of London -- all before his 21st birthday. Out on his own, he produced a series of highly ambitious disco records aimed at positioning him as an international star, but weighed down by the excesses of the era, Gyan saw his meteoric rise matched by an equally swift fall back into obscurity. Loved dearly by his contemporaries and sorely missed since his death in 2005, the story of the life of Kofi Kwarko "Kiki" Gyan is one often told with warning by his friends to the new generation of aspiring Ghanaian pop-stars. Soundway Records now collects the best of Gyan's work as a frontman and solo artist, featuring an array of electrifying disco grooves that still sound contemporary (and in some cases futuristic) decades after their initial release. Accompanied by detailed liner notes written by Uchenna Ikonne. Tracks recorded by Kiki Gyan and Gyan's bands K.G. Band and The Twins.

Eiji Kawamura is a highly respected arranger who has worked on projects by major recording artists like Kyoko Koizumi and Hideaki Tokunaga, and Atlas's third member Toshiro Imaizumi is a skilled studio musician who's also worked on major projects. The album opens with the soothing sounds of ocean waves that turn into the melancholic fusion number that is "Mediterranean Breeze", setting the Balearic mood for the whole album. "Simpatia" is an album highlight with a euphoric feel that could be Tokyo's answer to the sounds of Ibiza -- an obscure Japanese gem. "After Brunch With You" is a sunny samba fusion with a playful, bright piano melody, followed by "Summer Breeze", an electric fusion jam that sounds like Holger Czukay wrote it. A track that was so ahead of its time, it wouldn't be surprising if International Feel picked it up and released it as is. Breezy mellow tune "Never Come Into Your Eyes" is reminiscent of the sentimental feeling one gets around summer's end. Another album highlight, "Indige", is one of Japan's most unique dance tracks of the time, an electric disco stomper that sound like it could've been produced by Todd Terje. "Breeze For Siesta" features Toshiro Imaizumi's beautiful piano paying, a relaxing song that wouldn't sound out of place on ECM. "Love Beach" blends prog influences with fusion in a way only Hiroyuki Namba can do. The album ends with "Madrigl", a magical song with dramatic and melancholic moments, full of quintessentially Japanese sense of beauty.

M.A.L. My Sixteen Little Planets CD
40 years later the mythic album is available!Lies of omission and appropriations. The story of a magnetic tape that contained a trade secret. Four decades after My Sixteen Little Planets's release (on OHR, 1975), Inventions For Electric Guitar, the solo debut by Ash Ra Temple guitarist Manuel Göttsching, is now a classic, an undisputed worldwide reference. Inventions was made using only an electric guitar and a simple four-track tape recorder. Inventions was the challenge, and so was its impact. Göttsching recorded it in July-August 1974 in Berlin, after a sudden technical revelation. The original LP sleeve had the following printed on its back: Manuel Göttsching (guitars only). Manuel played his guitar and used a 4 track TEAC A3340, Revox A77 for echoes, wah-wah pedal, volume pedal, Sola Sound Fuzz, Schaller Rotosound, and Hawaiian steel bar. The reaction was unanimous: this was a significant innovation, in terms of both technique and creativity. However, there are little-known facts to this case. In early 1974, Göttsching's label received a tape sent by M.A.L. -- same design, same configuration, almost the same tracks. This is known by only a handful of experimental musicians from the Charleroi area. M.A.L., aka Daniel Malempré, is the actual inventor of this technique which Göttsching reproduced a few months later. Given the above, it's suggested that you listen to both albums. As doubts are removed, the truth sets in, forty years later. Here's hoping that this will ease the deep disgust that made M.A.L. leave his guitar untouched for so long. All music by M.A.L. on Fender Stratocaster 1964 with a wah-wah Cry Baby. Recorded and mixed at home between 1972-1976 on a reel-to-reel recorder, Sony TC-630.

SECOND WOMAN Instant/Apart 12"
Second Woman is the collaborative project featuring Turk Dietrich of Belong and Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv. The concept of Second Woman began with the idea of taking tropes from footwork, dub, house, and techno, and twisting these ideas into something kaleidoscopically liberated from the grid. Second Woman tweak the perception of time and space within the audio field into something ASMR-inducing and ultimately satisfying to listen to. With Apart/Instant, Second Woman present their signature sound as well as a new, more measured dimension to their work.

FLUXION Ripple Effect CD
Fluxion's Ripple Effect is the film score for a non-existing motion picture. This nine-track album is the result of experimentation and the combination of the producer's two most cherished art forms: electronic music and score music. Ironically the two worlds rarely seem to meet, despite the fact that score music has adopted a looser form in order to better adapt to film accompaniment, bringing it closer to electronic music which attempts to contradict form or shed it altogether. Fluxion felt the need to bring these two musical forms into dialogue with each other, lending structure to electronic and deconstructing score music to create a malleable and expressive hybrid. The album's production took two years from its original conception for the subliminal story to unfold into the completed product. Fluxion wanted to say as much as possible through the music, leaving the visuals as a blank canvas for the listener to create their own story. In the end, the goal is to give each member of the audience a unique audiovisual experience based on their own perception and interpretation.

LAGHONIA Etcétera LP
2018 repress. In 1970, after four fantastic singles under the name New Juggler Sound, the Peruvian band formed by Saúl Cornejo (guitar), David Levene (lead guitar), Ernesto Samamé (bass), Carlos Salom (organ), and Manuel Cornejo (drums) changed their name to Laghonia and recorded their debut LP Glue for the Mag label. It was an album influenced by the British rock of the era, to which they added fiery guitars full of fuzz and wah-wah, the omnipresent and hypnotic Hammond organ sound, and Latin American percussion and rhythms. A perfect mix of the British beat melodies of the mid-'60s, Jimi Hendrix's intense rock, Cream's heavy blues, and Santana's Latin rock. Laghonia returned to the studio in 1971 to record their second LP for Mag. Packaged in a clearly psychedelic gatefold sleeve designed by the band's drummer, Manuel Cornejo, Etcétera shares all the elements of the first LP, though on this occasion, the compositions, while keeping their immediacy and featuring strong melodies and choruses, have a more complex structure, ranging from psychedelia to progressive rock through superb, dark King Crimson-esque passages and shining moments of pastoral folk. Sure to be cherished by lovers of Latin American rock, pop, and psychedelia as practiced by such other similar classic bands as Traffic Sound, We All Together, Black Sugar, and Telegraph Avenue. This reissue is presented in a replica of the original gatefold sleeve.

MAIA, TIM Tim Maia (1977) LP
2018 repress. Vinilisssimo present the first vinyl reissue of Tim Maia's 1977 self-titled album. Tim Maia was born in 1942 in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and started his musical career at an early age, along with close friends such as Roberto Carlos or Jorge Ben. Carlos would eventually help him to get a deal for his first single at CBS. During the '70s, Maia started to incorporate soul and funk elements into his style. After a two-year period involvement in the Cultura Racional in Brazil, Maia's funky style was still at its best when he released this album in 1977. It was his first and only recording for Som Livre, the legendary label that became extremely popular due to the many soap operas soundtracks in its extensive catalog. This self-titled LP deserves to be shortlisted among Maia's top records. It features killer tunes like the anthemic "É Necessário", undoubtedly one of the best songs in his career, and also boogie gems such as "Verão Carioca" or "Venha Dormir Em Casa" that show obvious influences by some of the biggest American soul artists of the time. It also contains intimate vocal delights as in the lovely smooth tune "Música Para Betinha" or even straight funky instrumentals like "Flores Belas". The string arrangements, wah-wah guitars, horns, deep vocals make this recording a milestone in the so-called "Black Movement" in Rio, where artists like Toni Tornado, Banda Black Rio and Maia himself were bringing in the funky sounds of America and mixing them with local rhythms like samba. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
