ZOMBIES IN MIAMI Take It Off EP 12"
Zombies In Miami maintain the disco heat with their debut on Mike Simonetti's 2MR. Three tracks and one deep remix by Jackie House. "Take It Off" leads by example: strident, uplifting, and dynamically arranged so a whole new level of feels is unleashed when you least expect it. "New Odisea" takes more of a cosmic approach with its slinking bassline and soaring, yearning chords that weave and wave above it. Fittingly psychedelic, layered, and circuitous, springy riff persistently tickles under waves of evocative atmospheres in "Where Is The Voice Of That Man On Acid".

TENNISCOATS Music Exists Disc 4 LP
Alien Transistor and Tokyo-based label Afterhours release the vinyl-version of Volume 4 of Tenniscoats' masterpiece Music Exists, originally released in 2016. The final piece in this magic quadruple release by the Japanese experimental folk luminaries. Tenniscoats have devoted followers all over the world, but their releases were always hard to find outside of Japan. Except for their album Tokinouta (2011), which saw a very limited run on vinyl, and the seminal Two Sunsets, their collaboration with the Pastels (and a small handful of 7"s), there were never any vinyl-releases, and also the CDs were hard to get for anyone who doesn't speak or read Japanese. So, this is the chance to dive deep into the beautiful, unique world of the Tenniscoats and their opus magnum Music Exists. Fourth in a series of four vinyl-only "discs" by Tenniscoats. In their 20 years carrier the band collaborated with the Pastels, Jad Fair, Norman Blake, and others. Includes double-sided fold-out insert."It may even be their greatest ever music, essential plus" --Monorail Music, Glasgow."Whatever's ailing you, Tokyo's Tenniscoats have got something for that" --Boomkat, Manchester.

ALMA NEGRA Mayola EP 12"
On their Maloya EP, the Basel collective pay tribute to the hypnotic rhythms that were feared both by the Catholic Church and the French government for the musical form's subversive part in the rebellion against colonialism. The release revolves around two contrasting Alma Negra re-workings of Lindigo's "Tany Be". The first takes a classic call-and-response structure in 12/8 and 6/8 rhythms, adding a driving bass line, and guitar licks. The "Dub Mix" concentrates on trance-inducing aspect of Maloya. The B side focuses on "Kabaré" by Christine Salem, one of today's stars of the Maloya scene.

SANCHES, ANTONIO Buli Povo! LP
RSD 2018 release. Analog Africa present a reissue of António Sanches's Buli Povo!, originally released in 1983. Funaná, the most African of music styles from Cabo Verde, had been banned by the Portuguese Rulers. But in 1974, with independence and the birth of the Bulimundo band, everything changed. Their leader, guitarist Katchás, believing it was time for a new approach, decided to dig deep into the ancient rural roots of funaná and modernize it with a full-band electrified setting. The idea gave birth to a whole new chapter in the already rich Cape Verdean musical landscape. A group of equally adventurous and talented young musicians with a renewed sense of pride spread across the cities of Lisbon, Paris, and Rotterdam followed the path and with the help of out of space synthesizers, electric guitar pedals, and all kinds of studio effect created their own renditions of funaná music. One of these musicians was António Sanches who recorded Buli Povo!, the strangest and yet most fascinating funaná recording to emerge from this period. Recorded in Lisbon with the legendary Voz de Cabo Verde in 1983, the album is a synth-drenched journey to the outer limits of Cabo Verdean popular music, which had remained off the musical radar until now. It was only in recent years, as interest in vintage Cabo Verde music started to grow, that rumors began to circulate about the strange brilliance of his synth-driven journey into the heart of funaná. Impossible to find for many years, the sound of Buli Povo! is just as arresting and mesmerizing today as it was on the day it was released. It has just taken us thirty-five years to catch up with António's vision. Deluxe gatefold sleeve.

MORRICONE, ENNIO Autopsy: Original Soundtrack 2LP
RSD 2018 release. "Arrow Records is proud to present the original soundtrack to Armando Crispino's nightmarish giallo thriller, Autopsy (Macchie solari). Previously unpublished on vinyl, this is one of legendary composer Ennio Morricone's most uncompromisingly experimental scores, which largely eschews the lounge jazz sounds often associated with the giallo genre in favour of dissonant improvisations, creepy atmospherics, jarring string arrangements and extraordinary vocalisations by Edda Dell'Orso. This limited marbled orange vinyl edition has been newly mastered from the original analogue tapes by James Plotkin and is presented on 180gram wax, housed inside a 350gsm sleeve. Featuring newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys and accompanying film notes by Lovely Jon."

TALIA, JOE Tint LP
Tint is the first new solo recording from Joe Talia in over a decade. Australian-born but now based in Tokyo, Talia is known to many listeners as a drummer (frequently collaborating both live and in the studio with artists such as Oren Ambarchi and Jim O'Rourke) and as a recording and mixing engineer responsible for dozens of releases across the fields of contemporary experimental music, wayward pop, and jazz. Alongside James Rushford, he is also responsible for one of the most legendary releases in the Kye records catalog, the creaking electronic morass of Manhunter (2013). Lovingly crafted over many months in his tiny Tokyo studio, Tint is an album-length electroacoustic suite that brings together Talia's expertise as percussionist, studio engineer, and performer on analog electronic instruments (primarily modular synth and Revox tape machine). Ranging from minimalist austerity to kosmische lushness, Tint refreshingly refuses the dark and moody sonic palette of much contemporary electroacoustic music in favor of an airy, at times almost weightless sound-world of gliding tones, skittering percussion, and burbling field recordings. Drawing inspiration from Jean-Claude Eloy's epic concrète love letter to Tokyo, Gaku-No-Michi (2010), Talia makes extensive use of his own recordings of his new home, but removes any sense of audio verite, abstracting them into transparent glosses of outdoor ambience or unidentifiable chimes and creaks. Flowing seamlessly between distinct episodes, Tint is compositionally controlled while retaining a sense of played spontaneity, eventually building to a maelstrom of analog synth zaps and tape manipulated percussion that reflects Talia's deep engagement with the relentless yet constantly shifting dynamics of free jazz. Stunning photographs by Joe Talia; Album design by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

DEADBEAT Wax Poetic For This Our Great Resolve CD
On his latest studio album, Scott Monteith, aka Deadbeat, ruminates with hard-earned wisdom and confidence upon the notion of carrying on in the face of worldwide nonsense. Wax Poetic For This Our Great Resolve began with the simple idea of asking friends from across the globe for messages of hope. No musical input was provided beforehand, and each participant was free to interpret the request as they saw fit. Though some of the names involved will be familiar to electronic music listeners (Gudrun Gut, Thomas Fehlmann, Mike Shannon), the common thread linking all of them is their friendship with Monteith and the many hours he has spent enjoying their company over the years. As so often happens when good conversation is shared among good friends, the results are as surprising as they are inspiring, spanning original prose, dialectic word games, and timeless quotations in six languages. Each song on the album was then composed around the content received, and named after the people who did the speaking. Ranging from the overtly political to the tenderly inspirational and many points in between, Wax Poetic For This Our Great Resolve provides verbal expressions of hope as diverse and rich as the experiences of the people who so generously delivered them. Musically the album sees Monteith taking his well-honed sound design abilities and widescreen arrangements to new heights, and exploring a deep interest in traditional analog recording methods to mesmerizing effect. Every sound on the record, whether generated from his tried-and-tested array of software-based tools, or from the enormous collection of guitars, organs, pianos, and percussion instruments found in the Berlin-based studio he now calls home, was recorded via microphone. Even as the very first track slowly fades into existence, it's clear that the smoke filled atmosphere of the place has penetrated the recordings to their very core. Indeed, it is no understatement to suggest that without the physical confines of the magical studio Chez Cherie, and the countless late night conversations and musical contributions of all the other beautiful souls who occupy it (T. Raumschmiere, Ben Laubner, Tilman Hopf, PC Christensen, and of course Cherie herself), this latest Deadbeat album would have been an impossibility. Wax Poetic For This Our Great Resolve is a document of collective action, and the power of community.

FORTI, SIMONE Hippie Gospel Songs 10"
Postmodern artist, dancer, choreographer, and writer Simone Forti originally wrote the Hippie Gospel Songs in 1969/70, around the time of the Woodstock Festival. She explains: "before coming to California where I started working and performing with Charlemagne Palestine and studying Tai Chi at the California Institute of the Arts, I had spent a year in Woodstock, New York, stoned in the woods. Now with Charlemagne at the piano I ran in circles and figure eights." The seven songs on the record were recorded in 2012 during Forti's exhibition Sounding at The Box, Los Angeles. This Box Editions release on 10" blue vinyl features an etching of Forti's Illuminations Drawing (1972) on side B and is accompanied by a 16-page color book with images of the original sheet music scored by artist, musician, and Forti's long-time collaborator Charlemagne Palestine. Bouncing shuffle "Bou Gei" starts with a driving bassline, lively cymbals, sparkling band-passed chords, summing-up Jorge's dedication to nightclubs and nightlife. On "Ruth", suspicious pads lurk behind a funky swinging rhythm spruced up by a continuous surfacing of snare rolls and giggly stabs. "Sensu Dub" explores without hesitation darker textures and resonances, leaving no concessions to leave the dancefloor. "U-Fonk #04.01" dives into sweating hotblooded late-time hours, with a hypnotizing deep-toned coil, soaked of greasy riffs and gloomy fumes.

JEMH CIRCS Untitled Kingdom CD
Black To Comm's Marc Richter returns under his Jemh Circs guise for a second album of sonic abstractions. In contrast to Black To Comm's analog tape- and vinyl-based sound, in Jemh Circs he works with digital sources by primarily sampling modern pop music (and various other oddities) on YouTube (et al.) and sending chunks of it through a variety of arcane transformations and mutations. Using similar esoteric methods as on his 2016 self-titled debut album (CELL 001LP) but with very different results the record deconstructs the hypermodern sound of pop music with a post punk attitude, energy, and primitivism. Richter's combining disparate elements that shouldn't really work together but somehow all the chaos is making strange sense creating a collection of oddly diverging sonic vignettes with a surreal and anarchic spirit. This is music deeply rooted in the present but still difficult to pinpoint to a certain year or style. (Untitled) Kingdom converts a seemingly one-dimensional concept into a complex puzzle of ideas, sounds, and narratives; completely assimilating the original sources and transforming them into novel entities with an unexpected melodic and rhythmic quality.Previous press for Jemh Circs:"The overall effect is quite remarkable. Each track is like a hologram of pop music itself, a tiny part that reflects the whole. You almost feel that you could open them out and re-create entire popular music cultures. We'll be grateful for that when the next solar storm fries all of our hard drives." --Ian Sherred, The Sound Projector"In that way Jemh Circs is a record about process -- not just how Richter loops and distorts and mutates his samples, but how the sounds of pop music create a particular sonic signature, one that gets more interesting the farther they're pulled from their original context." --Marc Masters, The Out Door"Recycling random audio off YouTube, Jemh Circs' process couldn't be less sentimental, but the results turn out to be sneakily emotive." --Philip Sherburne, Pitchfork

Volk layers the track with more prominent harmonies and hypnotic arpeggios, giving it a subtle yet highly effective trance touch.

LONG/DJ SPRINKLES, WILL Purple / Blue 2LP
2018 repress; 2016 release. We live in an era when "change" is a soundbite to sell more of the same old ideas, and "revolution" has more to do with social trends than social change. Will Long's deep house debut on Terre Thaemlitz's Comatonse Recordings examines that pack of lies dubbed "change" from the sweaty dancefloor, sounding the aftermath of failure around attempts at equality in "progressive" societies. Made with a simple setup of rhythm composer percussion, polyphonic synth chords, and rack sampler vocals, these tracks have a minimal rawness that contends we've been wrong the whole time about how far the US -- and the world -- has come. Although they are sonically unlike anything Long has produced as Celer or his other aliases for minimal and ambient experimental audio, they share a stripped-yet-full sound that reacts against overproduction -- within the dance music industry, and societies at large. DJ Sprinkles' overdubbed contributions quite literally and psycho-acoustically resonate that intention, tactfully rending a farther, lush physicality and soulfulness through deftly applied daubs of glutinous sub-bass pressure, airy strings, and subtly shimmering FX, really bringing Long's tracks to life in a whole other dimension; and via disciplined, stripped-down, full-bodied production values that rank as perhaps the deepest productions yet in the Sprinkles' canon. They could be taken as a call for humbleness and meditative efficiency over cliched buildups and preening vanities, perhaps a comment on "deep" house as the equivalent of a fresh tattoo or sweatshop t-shirt slogan. Because, you know, it really does stand for a lot more. Tsuji Aiko has provided illustrations of the activists sampled featured on the front and back covers. Mastered by Terre Thaemlitz, cut by Dubplates & Mastering.

LONG/DJ SPRINKLES, WILL Mint / Clay 2LP
2018 repress; 2016 release. You may still be dazed from the first volume (C 026-1EP), but Will Long and DJ Sprinkles have already cued up their second session, with Mint / Clay landing on Terre Thaemlitz's Comatonse Recordings. The format and aesthetic remains the same as Purple / Blue, namely two raw pieces by Will Long, backed with overdubs by Sprinkles, amounting to the deepest house this side of Larry Heard's nuclear love bunker, all subtly executed and held up as a comparison to the aesthetics and intentions (or, ironically, the excess and lack of) of that sound in relief of current, conceptually-detached takes on the original, queer NYC deep house sound which Sprinkles was instrumental in shaping as a downtown DJ during that formative era. Again, Will Long, who's best known for his experimental ambient work as Celer, proves that it ain't what you've got but what you know and can do with it that matters. "Under-Currents" places sparing samples of T.R.M. Howard -- a mentor of Jesse Jackson and founder of Mississippi's Regional Council of Negro Leadership -- amidst a dream sequence of carbonated hi-hats and lingering chords urged by a plump bass drum, whilst "Get In & Stay In" nods to civil right activist and current Georgia congressional representative John Lewis in a lush haze of crepuscular chromatics and loping swing. DJ Sprinkles goes on to contribute another pair of incredible overdubs, lending Long's minimal elements a richer, fleshlier feel, whether with additional breakbeats, or nimbly lowering the bass and layering up spirited flutes and Rhodes. Quite crucially, the concept never gets in the way of the music, perfectly demonstrating the symbiotic nature of the music and politics in the way they most likely intended, especially for the DJs, dancers, and promoters who act as gatekeepers for this music. Tsuji Aiko has provided illustrations of the activists sampled featured on the front and back covers. Mastered by Terre Thaemlitz, cut by Dubplates & Mastering.

LONG/DJ SPRINKLES, WILL Yellow / Ivory / Rust 3LP
2018 repress; 2016 release. Will Long X DJ Sprinkles' journey to the heart of deep house culminates in the third and final volume in a series of three, offering the broadest yet most subtle, spine-tingling session of the lot, presenting the former's raw and 'floor-ready originals backed by the latter's inimitably sumptuous overdubs. Conceptually rooted in the queer, black politics of NYC's late '80s and early '90s house scene -- where Terre Thaemlitz cut her teeth as DJ Sprinkles -- the series can be viewed as a vital reminder of that scene's original values and sense of social democracy, especially when contrasted with the glut of contemporary, commodified representations of that music which sorely miss the mark, or weren't even aware of the scene's provenance to begin with. Make no mistake, though; this is no lecture or snub at younger producers making deep house. Rather, it is evidence of the original form's latent potential to still generate rare, precious feelings which have been lost or glossed over with subsequent, detached and over-produced translations of its original syntax and intent. "Deep" is the key word here on many levels, from their poignant use of historical samples by civil rights pioneers Bayard Rustin, Jesse Jackson, and Kathleen Cleaver, to the unfiltered innocence of Will Long's productions and Sprinkles' corresponding, pensile overdubs, which make utterly incredible use of the frequency spectrum to reveal acres of space in the upper registers and, on the other hand, an honestly breathtaking application of layered sub-bass tones that are just impossible to describe. This one's a little bit special... Mastered by Terre Thaemlitz, cut by Dubplates & Mastering.

THAEMLITZ/DJ SPRINKLES, TERRE Deproduction EP1 LP
Terre Thaemlitz presents an exclusive vinyl edit of "Names Have Been Changed" taken from the epic Deproduction album (2017), backed with the incredible "House Arrest" mix as DJ Sprinkles. Asking pertinent questions about the hypocritical nature of relations between LGBT agendas and western humanist notions of the nuclear family, Terre's Deproduction sensitively yet unflinchingly broaches topics usually considered taboo by a mainstream who is all too happy to pick and choose parts of radical, fringe culture to fetishize, while swerving the bigger questions proposed by those niches. In the vinyl edit of "Names Have Been Changed", exclusive to this LP, Terre contracts the original, 43-minute blend of strings and unsettling scenes of domestic violence into a 17-minute version, beautifully suspended in the cut at 45rpm in order to best represent the work's unique democracy of frequency -- from the muffled row heard next door, to its hyper-realistic avian chirrups and modestly spare, foregrounded strings. On the B-side's 10-minute "House Arrest" mix Terre's ideas feel even more radical when juxtaposed with a sublime deep house production, placing them in context of what was and still can be a radical artform when done with insight and consideration. The result is one of this decade's most sublime yet unsettling house tracks, bar none. Mastered by Terre Thaemlitz, cut at Dubplates & Mastering.

I was gone for more than six months in Indonesia. At that time, for an Italian, going to Indonesia was like Marco Polo going to China! I found there what I expected to find: in their forests were many bamboo trees with which I created incredible sounds. The bamboo, opened at the middle and laid on the floor, made sounds in 'pitch'. Using the 'diapason' I made a 'scale' out of it! (...) I did not have any problem in scoring this movie. I loved the Indonesian music, but I wrote music that reflected my personality. The music took ten days to write, arrange and conduct, and I am very satisfied with what I did (...)" Edition of 500.

ROTA/ARMANDO TROVAJOLI, NINO Boccaccio '70 LP
Doxy present a reissue of Nino Rota and Armando Trovajoli's soundtrack for the 1962 Italian anthology film, Boccaccio '70. From original liner notes: "Two of Italy's top soundtrack musicians, Nino Rota and Armando Trovajoli, are responsible for the exciting music featured in Boccaccio '70. Rota has been the composer of dozens of famous film soundtracks and his music contributed greatly to Fellini's previous hit films, La Strada (1954), I Vitelloni (1953) and La Dolce Vita (1960). In The Temptation of Dr. Antonio, Rota subtly underlines the obsession for morality which dominates the life of Dr. Antonio, the leading character in the episode . . . and his sensitive musical comment on Visconti's contribution to Boccaccio '70 -- The Job is a unique asset to the great director's work. Armando Trovajoli is the composer of the musical commentary to De Sica's The Raffle. Trovajoli was the first composer to induce Sophia Loren to sing in a film . . . and in The Raffle, Sophia sings again. The strikingly effective underscoring for Boccaccio '70, composed by these two outstanding musicians, is in no small way responsible for the smash box-office success of the film around the world." MIKKEL METAL Just Enough Light LP
Mikkel Metal returns to Copenhagen's Echocord with his new mini-LP Just Enough Light, comprising six originals from the Danish artist. Copenhagen-based producer and DJ Mikkel Metal has been a beacon of light in the Danish electronic music scene and further afield for nearly two decades now, with the dub techno imprint from his hometown, Echocord, being the predominant home for his output, whilst also releasing material on Cologne's Kompakt, Tartelet, Semantica, and Avant Roots, a telling sign of the quality embodied in his work. Here though you'll see Mikkel deliver a mini-album concept in the shape of Just Enough Light and opener "Awake" perfectly sets the tone with emotive, dynamically unfolding atmospherics, tension building bass drones and spiraling dub chords subtly easing us into the project. "Bregnan" then stirs in some classic dub techno tropes with billowing stab sequences, lumpy subs and off-beat hi hats carrying the hypnotic groove for six-and-a-half minutes. "Jech" then strips things back to an almost beatless amalgamation of murky chords and modulating synth whirrs. Opening the flip side of the release is "Include" which embraces a brighter feel via ethereal pad swells, jazz-tinged synth melodies, and bumpy 909 rhythms before "Konkin" edges back into the eerie, brooding aesthetic with bubbling echoes, broken drums, and menacing bass swells at its core. "Restore" then closes the package on a stripped-back vibe, laying focus on an ever- evolving singular dub chord to ebb-and-flow around thunderous subs, kicks, and bright hats.

STERILE HAND Sterile Hand LP
Juan Mendez, aka Silent Servant, finds his ideal EBM vocal foil in Ori Ofir under their Sterile Hand moniker. The duo's first vinyl round for Not Waving's Ecstatic label is a dark and sleazy run of deviant industrial techno and pugilistic EBM cuts made over the last year. Following Silent Servant's killer split 12" with Not Waving and Pye Corner Audio in 2017, and two fierce 12"s with Marcel Dettmann and Phase Fatale in 2018, the L.A.-based artist behind Sandwell District and Jealous God is at the apex of his game right now, combining EBM and techno in faithful but inventive new ways. If there was anything previously missing from Silent Servant's music, it's only become apparent through the seamless and natural incorporation of Ori Ofir's classic-styled but unique vocals. The two L.A.-based artists push each other down tightening alleys of EBM and industrial techno, with Ofir's stark, blunted declamations haunting and highlighting the most fetid corners of Mendez's rolled-steel productions. It's a style that works to cryptic, head-turning effect in the Voigt Kampff-like probe of "Personality Test", then with increasing dancefloor force in the Nitzer Ebb-esquer flow of "The Hunter" and the punishing, gnashing bite of "Security", whereas "Listen For Water" and the creeping figures of "Untitled" explore the esoteric powers and parameters of Sterile Hand in mesmerising psychoactive detail.

JELINEK & COMPUTER SOUP, JAN Improvisations And Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001 LP
Faitiche present the first vinyl issue of Improvisations And Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001, originally released on CD in 2002 on Soup-Disk. Jan Jelinek and the Japanese trio Computer Soup (Satoru Hori - trumpet; Osamu Okubo - toys and electronics; Kei Ikeda - toys and electronics) present eight tracks, all recorded one afternoon in the trio's living room in Tokyo. They are excerpts from a joint group improvisation that subsequently underwent rudimentary editing, on which Jelinek and Computer Soup worked separately. Jelinek met the three musicians at his first concert in Japan in 2001, at Tokyo's Yellow club, where Computer Soup performed as the support act. Delighted by their free improvisation on pocket-sized electronic toys, trumpet, and oscillators, he arranged to meet Hori, Okubo, and Ikeda a few days later for a session at their apartment. The resulting three-hour recording formed the basis for Improvisations And Edits. A few days later, Jelinek returned to Berlin. Over the following months, they separately chose passages from the recording that were then edited and assembled into an album. Formed in Tokyo in 1996 as a quintet (including Shusaku Hariya and Daisuke Oishi), Computer Soup began by performing with acoustic instruments on the streets of Shibuya. Ikeda und Okubo soon switched instruments, and from then on, the group's minimalistic but densely woven sound was defined by electronic toys, oscillators and Satoru Hori's trumpet. Includes download code; Edition of 500.Original reviews of Improvisations And Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001 in 2003:"The mind-blowing first track 'Straight Life' is perhaps the best example of what the album has to offer. Jelinek's trademark smears and washes occupy the midrange, like ghosted images of Joe Zawinul's electric piano floating quietly in the wind. DSP jazz modes are set against a walking bassline (possibly computer generated) and a gently tooted trumpet complete with Harmon mute, a dead ringer for Miles Davis' Prestige-era ballads. The effect is something like a three-dimensional film, with different realities on each layer; images of what jazz was manage to interact with a real-time demonstration of all it could be." --Pitchfork, 2003"Often deliciously dreamy and hazy, Improvisations And Edits is like listening to an exceptional instrumental jazz performance while half-conscious or under some sort of chemical influence. Computerised blips and bleeps, loops and treatments and murky sonic skips curl up around desolate horn notes and scattered instrumental noises that culminate in elegant music." --Exclaim!, 2003

JELINEK, JAN Zwischen LP
Faitiche release a short version of the radio play Zwischen (German for "between"). Devised and produced by Jan Jelinek for German public broadcaster SWR2, Zwischen brings together twelve sound poetry collages using interview answers by public figures. Each collage consists of the brief moments between the spoken words: silences, pauses for breath, and hesitations in which the interviewees utter non-semantic sound particles. These voice collages also control a synthesizer, creating electronic sounds that overlay and merge with the voices to make twelve acoustic structures. We all know the speaker's fate: you falter, you mispronounce, there are breaks, silences, and false starts. This results in delays, a language noise compared by Roland Barthes to the knocks made by a malfunctioning motor. Such gaps can be disconcerting, standing as they do for a failure of the speaker's rhetorical skills. But what happens when they become a constitutive, poetic factor? Zwischen consists of twelve answers to twelve questions. The answers were all recorded in interview situations. From the speech of the interviewees -- all eloquent public figures -- the pauses are extracted and edited together. The result is a series of sound collages of silence. But this silence is deceptive, as it is only meaning that falls silent. What remains audible is an archaic body language: modes of breathing, planning phases, seething word particles in search of sense that can break out into onomatopoeic tumult or drift off into sonorous noise. In a further step, each of the twelve collages controls a modular synthesizer via its amplitude and frequency. Supposedly defective speech acts conduct synthetic sounds and the speakers regain their composure -- not via the spoken word, but through sound. The opening questions in the various interviews are answered by: Alice Schwarzer, John Cage, Hubert Fichte, Slavoj Zizek, Joseph Beuys, Lady Gaga, Ernst Jandl, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Marcel Duchamp, Friederike Mayröcker, Yoko Ono, and Max Ernst. Jelinek extends his thanks to Frank Halbig and SWR2. Includes download code; Edition of 500.

HOOKWORMS Hookworms LP
2018 repress; Long-awaited repress on black-and-white splatter vinyl; Edition of 500. The debut vinyl release of Leeds's Hookworms. The Hookworms 12" features four songs, clocks in at around 27 minutes. The release was previously only available on tape via Sun Araw's Sun Ark label and that sold out in a matter of weeks. Hookworms formed in late 2009 at a time when most of the group's members were also playing together in a snappy punk group. The punk and garage background is important, because it has a lot to do with the energy that makes Hookworms so noticeable. Many groups think they can make good on psych-rock by just wigging out to their own ends, during interminable jam sessions that only come to a halt when someone decides "That's long enough." Most of Hookworms' songs are around the six-minute mark, which isn't long at all, and each one is constantly doing something. The singer and keyboard player delivers his vocals like The Gun Club's Jeffery Lee Pierce on Fire of Love -- frantic and impassioned. The guitars color in and around the lines, informed just as much by Flipper's Ted Falconi as "Sister Ray." Bass grooves lead the way, sage in their wisdom over which path to take. This is tidy stuff, a purposeful and fully conscious journey into the realms of Zoss. PLETNEV Aztec Code/Daywalker 12"
Alex Pletnev joins you as Pletnev for Aztec Code/Daywalker. Inspired by the fat kicks and live bass lines of the big beat era, Pletnev combines a jumping beat with African percussion and a charismatic vocal on "Aztec Code". "Daywalker" is a completely original, synthesized outing. A sleazy lead line charms and slithers upwards between layers of syncopated tabla and a sultry acidic groove. Sound artist Eva Geist joins Fleeting Wax label head Mehmet Aslan to spin "Daywalker". Their hazy rework dubs out some electronic elements, adding contorted sound design, distant vocals, lo-fi samples, and an Italo leaning bass.

YOUNGS, RICHARD Endless Futures LP
RSD 2018 release. Glass Redux release Endless Futures by Richard Youngs. White 180 gram vinyl; Limited edition of 500. Richard Youngs on the record: "Drum machine, bass guitar, electric guitar, voice. Four sounds on four tracks of tape, mixed to computer with minimal embellishment. This LP, released especially for Record Store Day 2018, is something like how I wished I had sounded when I was 12. But, I hadn't the technology, some of it didn't even exist. Nor the ability, I was still learning. Nor the voice, it was yet to break. Endless Futures is a record of two halves, yet of a piece. The sprawling title track that occupies the entirety of the first side contrasts with the short, sharp shocks of songs that comprise the second side. Both are re-imagined punk rock. But, this isn't music of the past. Re-purposing the music of my early adolescence takes me to a new musical zone, one in which the niceties of ornament are discarded in favour of directness. It isn't about being pretty, it is about saying something. With improvised lyrics, the message is of the moment. And, if all points in time are equally real, this eternal present of looking back is our Endless Future.""Imagine Richard Youngs as the junior member of a cabal of prolific and puritanical English musician-mystics, including The Fall's Mark E Smith, Van der Graaf Generator's Peter Hammill, Martin Carthy and The Clangers composer Vernon Elliot, and still his nature will elude you" --Stewart Lee, Sunday Times."iconic figure of the modern UK underground" --The Quietus.

ODEKO Rose Tinted Vision Implant 2LP
Rose Tinted Vision Implant sees the Bath-based producer Odeko creating a cutting edge sonic world inspired by "speculative fiction, time/reality shifting stories and dystopian shit." The entire record is structured around, and expands upon his passion for the "future," underpinning the music via an underlining narrative. Rose Tinted Vision Implant starts with "The User" (aka the listener/protagonist depending on your perspective) of the "Optic.Rose" going through the process of getting an implant is made by a mega corporation. Sonically you're there to observe. It opens with a precursory scan ("Anomaly Detection") and moves onto installation ("OpticRose_0_1_Installation") through to a battery change and a recalibration. From this point, the "presence" begins to take over the implant and the tracks verge into a more cerebral range. Odeko notes: "it's a bit of a satire on corporate brands pushing these great products that everyone is obsessed but that are detrimental to both the world, and how we perceive reality. Our relationship with social media and tech could go down a dangerous path if we lose sight of things. I'm going quite far here for the sake of the concept, but things like VR, AR, the want for body tech, mixed with our desire to be connected, emotionally, digitally, physically, wirelessly could lead us to a world where everyone has implants, or some kind of tech built into them." Sonically Rose Tinted Vision Implant is a record that explores a post-IDM, post-grime, post-ambient, post-glitch, post-retro-house, post-instrumental grime take on electronic music. "Boîte Diabolique" features Tom E. Vercetti.

MACHITO Machito: From Montuno to Cubop 2LP
RSD 2018 release. Machito (Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo) had arguably the most influential big band Latin orchestra of the mambo era in New York, being one of the earliest, largest, and hottest. One of the most important innovations of the orchestra was that they were the first to assemble the essential rhythmic trio of tumbadoras (congas), bongó, and timbales, which became the standard percussion lineup in subsequent Latin bands. In a bold move, Machito founded and named his orchestra The Afro-Cubans in 1940, something that was unprecedented at the time, proudly calling out his heritage long before the Civil Rights movement gained momentum or James Brown would proclaim to be black and proud. The orchestra was also the first truly racially integrated and culturally diverse band in the U.S. Machito has stated that the purpose of expanding the small conjunto into the big band format was a concept that aimed to bring the Latin sound up to the current New York standards of sophistication, professionalism, and excellence that the popular swing dance bands of the time enjoyed, enabling them to play complicated charts and attract plentiful multi-racial audiences to large venues. Progressive jazz-influenced arrangements were provided by his good friend and brother-in-law Mario Bauzá, a clarinetist and trumpeter who had learned about sophisticated jazz composition and swing time from stints with Don Redman, Noble Sissle, Chick Webb, and Cab Calloway. This dynamic union of Machito and Bauzá consequently made them key figures in the Afro-Cuban jazz/Cubop movement that came during the 1940s. What made Machito special as a vocalist was the fact that that he not only sung the "inspiraciones" (improvised sections) and lead, but he would also sing coro (chorus) in the same song. Already in his 30s when he started his big band, Machito's voice had a warm, fun-loving, pleasant sound with an old-school vibrato befitting a Broadway entertainer that by the 1950s was sounding more mature than his competitors. Yet he also was well-versed in Afro-Cuban lingo and jazz vocals and fit his authentic soneos expertly into the complicated jazz riffs and tropical poly-rhythms of the orchestra. Features Cuarteto Caney, Xavier Cugat Orchestra, M. Valdes, Noro Morales Orchestra, and Graciela, and Machito with his various ensembles: Machito's Afro Cuban Salseros, Sus Afro Cubanos, and Afro Cuban Orchestra. Some tracks are presented here on vinyl after many years. Remastered and restored. 300g cardboard.

BASS COMMUNION Bass Communion 2LP
RSD 2018 release. Hidden Art Recordings present a reissue of the debut Bass Communion album as a double-LP for the first time. Steven John Wilson, aka Bass Communion, on the record: "The first Bass Communion album was originally released in April 1998 by Third Stone, the same label later reissuing it under their Hidden Art Recordings imprint. It was compiled from musical experiments made during a period spanning 1994-97, all of which might loosely be termed ambient. Later on I would spend a lot more time on Bass Communion, often refining structures, processing, and sound combinations over a period of months, but at this point I was making each piece of music within only a few hours and rarely revisiting them afterwards. Several DAT tapes with filled in this way, while CDRs of various track listings were made and passed on to friends, record labels, and anyone that I thought might be receptive to the music. When the chance eventually came to release the first official CD, I listened back to the several hours of material I had accumulated by then and selected what I felt were the highlights to make a five-track disc lasting just over an hour. In retrospect it's the long version of 'Drugged' that makes the album worthwhile for me. The other pieces are perhaps less successful, but I learned something from all of them. One thing the album has in common with later Bass Communion music is that hardly any electronic sources are used, the pieces are mostly derived from processing 'real' instruments such as guitar, saxophone, piano, organ, percussion... etc. 'No News Is Good News' was recorded in 2000 in collaboration with virtuoso oud player Naseer Shamma, and originally used a background music for Grant Wakefield's audio documentary album The Fire This Time, issued in 2002. As such it dates from a few years after the rest of BC1, but as it's the only other title to have been issued on Hidden Art, it's been included here as a bonus track." Comes on 180 gram vinyl and in a gatefold sleeve. Remastered and with exclusive liner notes by Steven Wilson. Includes a bonus track not on the CD version and brand-new artwork. Edition of 1000 -- last copies.

Several of his recordings lit up London Is the Place for Me 2 (HJR 016LP, 2006), and Volume Three is devoted to his music, drawing on the 78s he cut in London over ten years from 1949. Nearly all the tracks assembled here come from recordings made for the Melodisc label and originally released as 10" 78 rpm singles. People who bought these records at the time can still recall how it was when the percussion team -- among them Ade Bashorun, Salustiano, Dos Anjos, Manny Myers and "Lati" Pedro -- built their polyrhythms in Ola Dosunmu's kingdom. With the melodic guitars of Brewster and Ambrose coming together behind Campbell's soothing voice, the musicians contrived to paint an evocative, enduring picture of palm wine Lagos nights." --Val Wilmer Features: West African Rhythm Brothers, Nigerian Union Rhythm Group, Ayinda Bakare And His Meranda Orchestra, Nigerian Union Rhythm Group, and West African Rhythm Stars.

MOLELEKWA, MOSES TAIWA Genes And Spirits 2LP
"Genes And Spirits: herald of a new South African jazz. When pianist and composer Moses Taiwa Molelekwa died in February 2001, fans and fellow musicians alike were swept away by grief. He was so young -- not yet 30 -- and had shown such musical promise. Genes And Spirits was his second album, released a year before his death. While the composer's voice and pianist's touch are instantly recognisable from his debut, Finding One's Self, the ideas underlying the music mark a conscious step into the unknown: what he called 'finding a range of rhythmic alternatives,' inspired by the rhythmic complexity he was hearing in both pan-African music and the New Music he had been exploring in Europe; and by the possibilities of electronic club music -- jungle in London, and kwaito in Soweto. Inspired like many of his musical age-mates by the optimism of the post-liberation 1990s in South Africa, Taiwa crafted what he described as ragga with a kalimba groove; Tswana vocals over a programmed drum track; a duet with Chucho Valdez and more, across eleven tracks combining the talents of multiple South African and world musicians, including Valdez, Flora Purim and Cameroonian drummer Brice Wassy. With Genes And Spirits, Molelekwa was stepping into the kind of genre-busting territory we associate today with players such as Robert Glasper, but he was doing it almost a decade earlier: asserting a new jazz identity that was young, popular and African. This re-release also includes one additional track, Wa Mpona, recorded for, but omitted from, the original release. Remastered by Frank Merritt at the Carvery, Genes and Spirits is presented as a deluxe gatefold sleeve including new liner notes by Gwen Ansel."

SMARASON, ORVAR Light Is Liquid LP
LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve; Includes download code. Being a key figure in Iceland's music scene over the past 20 years with his bands múm and FM Belfast among others, the time has come for Örvar Smárason to release his debut solo album. Light Is Liquid is made up of eight precious electronic pop songs that show him both as a gifted songwriter and producer. It's an update of the sound that made múm one of the most revered Nordic acts since the 2000s, but it's also slightly reminiscent of Boards of Canada's pastoral beats or even the transcendental tracks of Arca and Björk. A heap of experience and a sure-footed feeling for style constitutes this record, but at the same time it feels like a young and fresh love affair with music. Besides having released roughly 20 albums with his musical projects, exploring and blurring the borders of electronica, folk, indie rock and ambient, Örvar is a poet and a writer. On Light Is Liquid, maybe more than ever before, this talent translates into his songwriting. Lyrics and song titles oscillate between concrete objects and daydreams, reference dark regions on faraway planets, scientific phenomena and unsolved mysteries. What is light made of, what does it do? If you think about it, you start drifting off to strange and amazing places. Light Is Liquid provides the fitting soundtrack. The songs have been written over the past few years, most of them before Örvar's other recent project started at the beginning of 2016: Together with Sóley and Sin Fang he recorded one song each month in only a few days time, compiling them all into another wonderful album (MORR 150CD/LP, 2018). Sóley also sings backing on a few songs on Light Is Liquid, while Sin Fang mixed the whole album. Other guests include Sillus, whose magical voice accompanies Örvar on three tracks, and JFDR, another Icelandic talent lending her vocals to "Tiny Moon". Their voices are eerie and evocative, wrapping themselves around smoothly futuristic tracks. In "Duality Paradox", a robotic voice is stuttering over heartfelt melodies. There are lots of moments on this record that feel like a kind of android pop music. But then songs like "Flesh & Dreams" assure you that it's all very human after all. Light Is Liquid has all the qualities of a truly enthusiastic debut.

Cinthie's "Hurt me", Hector Couto's "Ciroco", Christian Burkhardt's "Hola", and Luca Donzelli's "Not Ordinary" are made for dancefloor lovers with a smile on their faces and enough energy to dance the whole night.

JONSON, MARC Years LP + 7"
RSD 2018 release. First time vinyl reissue. More than four decades after its original release, a minor album by an obscure artist from the Vanguard catalog is finally reissued on vinyl. There are recordings on the Vanguard label by more famous artists than Marc Jonson, and discs that far outsold Years (1972) -- but this collection has stood the test of time. Years is not only a stunning debut, but a harbinger of the promise of a young artist. "Rainy Dues" kicks off Years with a tersely honest statement and proceeds to expound on that with a series of observations and claims about a relationship whose literal nature is nebulous but whose emotional reality is dense. "Mary" is a musical sequel to the opener which treats with wonderful lyrics as well as powerfully evocative singing. "Mother Jane" remains a mystery after 30-plus years, but you don't need to understand it to enjoy it -- the pondering is a prize in itself. Side A ends with "Fly", an existential lament depicting alienation from others and self. Listen for the additional voices coming in near the end of the song on the word "fly" with a simultaneous harp flourish. "A Long Song" is the metaphoric and literal centerpiece of the album, falling precisely at the midway point. It's sweet and tender, with a narrator sure of himself. The brief "Autopsy", with its five lines, sung twice, carries a hefty poignancy with a melancholic tune. "Return To The Relief" is a lyrical and musical adventure. The carnival ride of this song finishes with a musical reference to Jackie DeShannon's 1969 popular single "Put A Little Love in Your Heart". "Munich" is the only song on the album which feels "dated" in any way -- one can hear the influence of "Revolution 9" from The Beatles' White Album (1968). The title could obliquely refer to the hostage taking at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany -- the havoc of that event mirrored by the fragmented song. The final track is "The Tredmill" which features a constrained and dulcet voice singing in front of a muted piano, interpolated with occasional drum. In Years, Marc Jonson deftly inserts brilliant production values to songs already possessing beautiful melodies and poetic lyricism. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl; Includes 7" with four extra tracks.

FELICE, SIMONE The Projector CD
Simone Felice, the singer-songwriter/record-producer from deep in the Catskills, has announced the release of his new album The Projector, released via New York Pro. Riding the train down from the Catskills to New York City's slam-poetry scene in 1998, a callow "tone-deaf" kid with little musical skills but verse in his heart. Forming a band with his brothers in 2005 and travelling the world. Hitting Number One in the US and UK with one production collaborator (The Lumineers' Cleopatra in 2016), scoring a Mercury Music Prize nomination (Bat For Lashes' The Bride in 2016) with another, striding into another side of 2018 with yet another (the Midlands band Peace). The first single, "The Projector", is spectral, almost skeletal at first, before the man's resonant voice and spartan guitar are joined by shiver some choral vocals from Bat For Lashes' Natasha Khan and haunted folktronica from Four Tet. Felice counts London's genre-surfing experimentalist as both close friend and neighbor. The track is a hallucinatory walk through the backrooms and hallways of modern human paranoia and tech-induced loneliness. Up in the Catskill Mountains, Simone Felice was thinking. Considering the roads he'd taken, and also the roads that had taken him. "I've been down the track", says The Felice Brother turned solo artist, putting it mildly. It was a lot to take in. And as he considered the prospect of a new album, it was a lot to get out, as well. "So often artists are looking to what they're doing next, or are stuck in where they are today," Felice thinks. "Sometimes we forget to honor our history." "It speaks to my journey," he begins. Back in the mid-nineties, cresting out of his teens, he'd read at the Nuyorican Poets Café, a vital scene best exemplified by Saul Williams. Lights down, curtain up, flickering camera on: this is the world of The Projector. It's a handcrafted album of lone guitars echoing in the twilight, nocturnal electronics, and woodsy vocals in which you can hear and feel the grain. Of scenes and moods, shouts and cries and pleas, interweaving narratives lovingly birthed in Simone's native woods, (with longtime recording collaborators David Baron, Pete Hanlon, and James Felice) not far from the Kaaterskill Creek upon which he himself was born.

DJ RAPH Sacred Groves LP
LP version. Includes download code. DJ Raph is an electronic musician, producer, and DJ from Nairobi, Kenya. He is an outstanding figure in the growing Kenyan underground electronic scene. His debut album Sacred Groves is a rare gem of a record; considered, emotional, and contagious. DJ Raph builds rich, textured electronic music from pan-African ethnographic field recordings. Sacred Groves opens up a timeless musical universe, that is both ancient and futuristic; a deep mélange of modern electronic bass music, African chants, and traditional rhythms. This is essential dance music. It is fundamentally not kitsch or clichéd. What makes DJ Raph's approach unique within the abundant production of African electronic music is a keen interest in the meanings and contexts of the original field recordings. Sacred Groves emerges from weeks of research in the extensive music archive of the Iwalewahaus (Bayreuth). The music, rhythms, and chants which he builds from are not just to expand his sound palette; his work is a considered homage to the traditions which he borrows from. The archive is revered rather not researched. The respect that DJ Raph, a Nairobi-based producer, has for a broad African cultural heritage is deeply visceral and palpable in this music. Long samples allow the field recordings to breathe, to open up an innovative and vital electronic soundscape. Sacred Groves is simultaneously traditional, contemporary, and deeply sacred. All music was produced by Raphael Kariuki in Nairobi, Kenya and Bayreuth, Germany. All ethnographic recordings used on this record are part of the UNESCO World Heritage with friendly support of Klassik Center, Kassel. Additional mixing by Hannes Teichmann. Mastered by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering, Berlin.

YAGHMAEI, KOUROSH Back From The Brink 3LP
2018 repress. Twenty-one fully restored tracks from Kourosh's original master tapes presented as a deluxe 6-panel full color gatefold 3LP set. Includes a 24-page full color booklet with an extensive, first-person treatise by Kourosh himself, plus rare photos and ephemera of Iran's '70s rock scene, many never before seen. This vinyl version features 21 tracks from the 30 track double CD version. Subtitled: Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran: 1973-1979. "The only legitimately licensed collection of the godfather of Iranian psychedelic rock, Kourosh Yaghmaei. Known within the Iranian diaspora simply by his first name, Kourosh's recordings were thought lost after Islamic fundamentalists took control of Iran. They weren't: Kourosh had protected them -- along with key ephemera from the '70s. Their collection here bolstered by Kourosh's first person recollections of Iran's '70s rock scene and its death after the Revolution, tells the story of an immensely talented artist's desire to persevere in the face of terrible adversity. Kourosh Yaghmaei and his brothers Kamran and Kambiz were amongst the few inspired Iranian musicians determined to change Tehran's musical landscape in the late '60s and early '70s. The trio, armed with rented, second-hand instruments and records by The Ventures, The Kinks, The Doors, merged Western garage rock, psychedelia and Iranian folkloric music to create a sound unlike anything that came before them."

AXELROD, DAVID Song Of Innocence LP
RSD 2018 release. "David Axelrod delivered one of the great psychedelic albums with 1968's Song Of Innocence, based around the poetry of William Blake. It is considered by many his masterpiece. Song Of Innocence is this weird hybrid that no one, not even Axelrod himself, could ever really describe. The listener is pulled in by his melodies, simplistic at first blush, but colored by odd chord progressions and turn arounds, grounded by the drummer Earl Palmer and Carol Kaye's funk, torn between the juxtaposition of musical elements -- a jazz vibraphone solo here, a fuzz guitar tear here, a nod to the baroque in Don Randi's clavichord comps -- and put at ease, always, by Axe's arrangements, which utilize brass and strings in a way that no 1960s arranger did. It's worth noting that there are really count-on-your-hand examples of anything that might even be compared to Song Of Innocence. Perhaps Arthur Verocai's self-titled and only artist album, issued on the Brasilian Continental label in 1972, or the collaborations between Serge Gainsbourg and Jean Claude Vannier, which found their epitome in 1971's Histoire de Melody Nelson. But even these albums, superb, in any thinking music fan's canon of the best from this era, perhaps in their lives -- and perhaps in line with Song Of Innocence -- are one-offs. Axelrod's Song Of Innocence set in path a series of artist albums on Capitol and other labels and influenced the world countless times over, from The Verve to DJ Shadow to Madlib to J.Dilla. Remastered from the original tapes in a new transfer, with extensive liner notes and unpublished photos."

J DILLA Ruff Draft: Dilla's Mix 2LP
Re-released post-RSD 2018. "When Ruff Draft saw its initial release in 2003, J Dilla possessed production skills on par with anyone in hip-hop -- technically and creatively. 'At the top of his game,' says longtime friend and collaborator, Karriem Riggins. After years of building while modestly deferring to others of both greater and lesser notoriety, Dilla finally completed the first solo endeavor on his own label, entirely on his own terms. The significance of such an autonomous success often gets overlooked, and partly accounts for why Ruff Draft is one of the lesser-referenced entries in Dilla's oeuvre. 'It's a mysterious little project,' says his mother, Maureen Yancey. 'But out of his entire career, that was the happiest time.' Prior to recording the EP, Dilla found himself at a crossroads. Estranged from his label, MCA, and separated from the mother of his youngest daughter, frustration abounded both personally and professionally. Dilla spent parts of 2002 and 2003 working on an album for MCA that featured his rapping over contributions from other producers with whom he had connected and whose music he respected. At the time, he was known primarily for his beats, yet reviled for his MCing by most anyone not from his hometown of Detroit. The project was to be an intentional freak of the industry. The project would go on to spur his collaborative album with Madlib, Jaylib, and would first showcase the template that he would take to his greatest heights with 2006's Donuts. The Stones Throw reissue of Ruff Draft from 2008 featured remixes of the songs from the album, done without Dilla's involvement. This version of the album takes Dilla's recently discovered mixes of the album and restores his vision for the project. 'Straight from the mothafuckin' cassette,' as he phrased the sound he was going for on the EP's intro. It is buttressed by unreleased tracks and is presented in two versions: LP one is the EP as it was originally released; LP 2 is the alternate version that Dilla had for the project. Author Ronnie Reese expands upon his original liner notes to further tell Dilla's story, in a booklet complete with never before published photographs from the Ruff Draft photo session."

BOLI GROUP N.P.D.S. LP
Boli Group is a new ensemble spearheaded by Copenhagen-based composer and producer Asger Hartvig. Responsible for some of the most fearless and intriguing works to come from the city in recent years, Hartvig is as imposing as he is mysterious, and his debut release for Posh Isolation makes no concessions. Hartvig is perhaps best known for his work with the group Synd Og Skam. And though less known, Brynje 1&2 is just as exceptional. Taking both technology and classicism as allegories, each group charts routes in and out of pop music, somehow arriving at an observer's distance to the distinct stylistic choices in the process. The label Visage has published the best of this, and the logic has certainly been carried into Boli Group LP, the latest offering from Hartvig and his distinguished ensemble of Nina Cristante, Holger Hartvig, Thea Thorborg, and Cæcilie Trier. N.P.D.S. is willingly dramatic, though it never plateaus into melancholia. Hartvig pirouettes at the edge with the sorrowful string arrangements and the pristine timbre of the piano, the immediacy of the acoustics always binding the listener tightly to the risk. Pastoral and meditative, the electronics don't tamper with the delicate fabric being woven. They always register as supportive and understated. The synthetic hum, occasionally yielding a doleful melody as it does, manages to imbue a naiveté to this contemporary and subtly idiosyncratic chamber music. The album's secret, barely kept through the minimalism, is its distinct folk noir quality in holding it."Boli Group creating new chamber folklore embracing the playing of instruments, not the played, but that which is playing for the sake of future focus and edit into the very minerals of instrument, intuition, emotion, fragility underlying, the warning, always pulsating acts of drama, wet leaves, asphalt, pan to right, agriculture and electricity poles a container ship, lonely in horizon hoping for a clear thought, but everything existing as conspiracy the sound of a search, uncertain and always asking, for certainty is false, showing sceneries changing permanently and forever narrating, like a panorama of grey clouds, keeping humidity levels high, heating up before the release of water and lightning investigation for folk instruments."

U ROY The Originator LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of U Roy's The Originator, originally released in 1990. Ewart Beckford, aka Daddy U Roy, changed the focus of Jamaican popular music by turning the sound system deejay from an incidental figure that told jokes in between records and made announcements about where the next dance would be held, to a major star whose rhyming toasts were as important as the lyrics for any singer. U Roy's command on the microphone on sets like Dickies Dynamic and Sir George the Atomic paved the way for his influential residency on King Tubby's Hi Fi. Keith Hudson, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Bunny "Striker" Lee were some of the first producers to bring him into the studio, but the breakthrough hits came for Duke Reid in 1970, with Roy toasting over old rock steady rhythms. Work for Prince Tony subsequently brought him international fame through a contract with Virgin, but he continued to record grassroots efforts at home. The Originator gathers some of the greatest tracks U Roy cut for Striker, voiced as usual at King Tubby's studio over hot hits by Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell, Gregory Isaacs, and others; "King Tubby's Skank" celebrates Tubby himself.

LYRICS BORN Later That Day... 2LP
Re-released post-RSD 2018. "A crucial founding member of the Northern Cali-birthed Solesides / Quannum collective -- which included DJ Shadow and Blackalicious, among others -- and one half of the groundbreaking Latyrx duo (with Lateef The Truthspeaker), Lyrics Born opened a lot of ears and minds with his 2003 solo debut, Later That Day... On this very open-minded and chiefly self-produced long player, Lyrics Born and his crew (including Joyo Velarde, on vocals; guitarist Tommy Guerrero and Germany's funk masters Poets of Rhythm) bring it from the funk side, boasting a warm soul stew instead of colder drum machine-based beats and chopped samples. As shown since his earliest days, the incredibly versatile Lyrics Born mixes his flow up depending on the track, from tongue-twistingly fast to conversationally mundane, and concepts are usually at the forefront -- 'Cold Call' is an amusing take on telemarketers, featuring Gift of Gab; 'Before And After' is about friends growing apart; 'Bad Dreams' is a groovy apocalyptic shaker. The infectious 'Callin' Out' rides the party train and 'Stop Complaining' timeshares between funny and serious. 'Do That There' features DJ Cut Chemist with liquid cuts that work around LB's verbal floor routine. And even after all of the other musical fireworks, the album's crescendo most assuredly comes on track eleven, 'The Last Trumpet': operatically dramatic and powerful, with Lyrics Born and Latyrx-mate Lateef trading verses like 'the only action / we can profit from / is movement towards / the positive / progressive thought / that's rooted up / in consciousness' at breakneck pace. Presented for its 15th Anniversary as a 2-LP set, on colored vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket with in-depth liner notes by renowned author and journalist Jeff Chang (who also helped found the Solesides movement in the early '90s), plus a 11"x17" poster of the amazing cover art, this is a perfect way to re-introduce this classic to a new era of fans -- present and future." DAVACHI, SARAH Let Night Come On Bells End The Day LP+CD
Recital present the newest record by Canadian composer Sarah Davachi. Currently working on her PhD in Musicology at UCLA, her trajectory has been unorthodox. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, which, if you've never been there, doesn't really scream "avant-garde" (Calgary is the rodeo capital of the world). It is important and interesting that she chose to study esoteric music; as Sarah could have easily been a cowgirl or a concert pianist had her ingrained love of synthesis and sonic phenomenology not taken the wheel. There are few people that have the diligence and resolve to take their time with music... especially in a live context. Recital label head Sean McCann: "The first time I saw Sarah perform, I presumptuously told her that her music reminded me of my favorite Mirror albums (the exceptional project of Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heemann). Sarah was not familiar with Mirror, so the compliment was initially lost on her. Years back I was in the same situation when a review compared my music to Andrew Chalk, who was unknown to me at the time. So I felt a kinship in our magnetic drift towards unspoken and clustered beauty." Let Night Come On Bells End The Day follows the release of her "sound-wheel" LP All My Circles Run, which examines the isolation of different instruments. Let Night Come On, recorded mainly with a Mellotron and electronic organ, feels like a return to the nest. Burrowed in the studio, Davachi was the only performer on this album. She both splays her compositional architecture and re-contextualizes the essence of her early output. She chiseled careful and shadowed hymns; anchors of emotion. Two pillars of this album are "Mordents", which may hints of her love for progressive rock music -- and "Buhrstone", comparable to a somber funeral march of piano and flutes. These two examine punctuations of early music, gently plucking melodies and movements. The three other compositions are tonal works, blowing slow jets of lapping harmonics. Includes three 9"x9"photo-prints by Davachi; Includes CD; First edition of 600.Sean McCann: "I find it hard to separate 'At Hand' from filmmaker Paul Clipson, who made a melancholic film for this piece of Sarah's. A fitting title for Sarah and Paul's relationship -- frequently working in orbit of each other, meticulous and tactile. I cherish this track as a memory of Paul."

KAGAMI Kagami LP
Kagami is the duo of Jared Blum (Vision Heat, Gigante Sound) and Maxwell August Croy (En, Root Strata). Their eponymous debut, recorded between 2014 and 2017, finds the pair navigating a bracingly wide range of niches with aplomb and precision. Evoking summertime ambience, widescreen electronics, anthemic pop instrumentals, and windswept romantic gestures, Kagami is a charming and dramatic record that at times recalls the soundtrack to some lost title from Nintendo's golden age or perhaps a spiritual successor to the miniatures of Yasuaki Shimizu's Music for Commercials (1987). Original cover art by Brenna Murphy; Layout by Konrad Jandavs. Mastered by Helmut Erler; Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Includes download code.

CHAINES The King LP
The King is a remarkably absorbing collection of abstract torch songs by Cee Haines, aka Chaines, a Manchester-based artist in possession of a starkly singular sonic language, who has collaborated extensively with the London Contemporary Orchestra and had their work performed at The Roundhouse, Union Chapel, Printworks, and Tate Modern. Leading a thematic expansion of Chaines's OST (2015), their second solo release yields a phantasmic and richly evocative soundtrack-esque series of works written over the past three years, including exclusive versions of their commissions by the London Contemporary Orchestra and Union Chapel, all serving to frame an intimate yet beautifully elusive portrait of a unique artist coming into their own. In eight parts, Chaines draws a mercurial line that connects the almost bestial intimacy of purring strings and whispered vocals in "For Your Own Good" to something like Scott Walker-invoking-Fantasia in "Eraserhead", conjuring a mutably surreal and mystic atmosphere that keeps listeners teetering between knife-edge suspense and sublime relief as they scale from delectably detailed avant-garde psychedelia in "Knockturning" to a bout of Grouper-as-spectral-jazz diva styles of Population 5120, and all in a way that makes the exploded hyaline castles in the sky dimensions of Airship seem totally feasible next to the cavernous avant-techno impulses of Carpathia. Never following a linear path, Chaines is as likely to incorporate doom-laced chamber motifs and asymmetric techno rhythms as operatic vocals and microscopic sounds, always with a sensitivity to the metaphysics of space and spirit which coolly sets their work apart. Held up beside Slip's celebrated recent releases, Chaines find themselves amid exemplary, boundary-morphing company, whose diversity finds a common strength in the will to express something of a pathos beyond easy comprehension, yet which can be felt and understood immediately and instinctively by anyone with an open mind and a thirst for the new. Artwork by Chaines. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.

JAHYU Lineage Of The Sun 2LP
JahYu: the Korean word for "freedom", this is an artist whose music is rooted in the notion of freedom, freedom of sound, freedom of expression, freedom from mind, and freedom of the soul. JahYu uses his creative freedom to connect directly with his ancestors and create music that somehow transports the listener through time and space. Oriental flute and string melodies slide effortlessly amongst powerful roots-based dubstep, creating a sound that is unique and full of flavor. This enigmatic Korean-German producer blends both sides of his heritage, the digital steppers that emerged from Europe in the 1990s alongside the traditional oriental music of his mother's homeland, Korea, augmented by a deeper exploration of contemporary bass music. It is said that JahYu's family descend from the same lineage of Go Jumong, the founder of the great Goguryeo Kingdom of the Far East, a people renown for their ancestral worship and unique musical expression. Goguryeo music was even adopted as official court music for the powerful Sui and Tang dynasties of China, many times throughout history these Chinese dynasties were at war with Goguryeo, however, the music of the enemy, Goguryeo, was still able to flourish in China and has been consistently performed across Asia for hundreds of years. Perhaps this explains the majestic qualities of JahYu's music. JahYu's productions provide you with the opportunity to discover ancestral roots through music. Roots music is not a sound, it is a feeling and a feeling that JahYu is able to evoke with profound intensity. "A perfect fusion of meditative Eastern instrumentation with 21st century sound-system vibration." --MixMag

The Mekons' second 7-inch stands as a lasting monument to the punk era. 'Where Were You,' an anthem with chiming guitars, military-style drums and snotty lyrics, may be one of the most epic songs written with just two chords. The angular spasms and up-front bass thump of 'I'll Have To Dance Then (On My Own)' would become tenets for many of the post-punk bands that followed. "In 1977, Eritrean ingénue, celebrity, model, softcore actress and singer Lara Saint Paul journeyed from Italy to Los Angeles, California to record her sixth album, this time with producer/musician/singer Leon Ware at the boards and writing or co-authoring every track. This was a profound departure from her Italian easy listening/pop vocal catalog. With English song titles and an uncredited Quincy Jones assisting on production, session men Ray Parker Jr., Jimmy Gadson, King Errison and Chuck Rainey on guitar, drums, percussion and bass, and backing vocals from the Pointer Sisters, this is classic and sexy disco/funk from the genre's peak period, with Afrobeat flavor bubbling over on the album's single, the haunting 'Voodoo Lady', and a sweaty, breathy undertone throughout. 'Disco-Music Nudo di Classe' was the subtitle on her feature in the May 1979 issue of Italian skin rag Playmen, which also could be used to describe this album. Classy naked disco. First time on CD."

DODSON, VENUS Night Rider CD
"Venus Dodson was part of a loose NYC-based collective in the late 1970's that revolved around Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams, whose track 'Shining' was a Paradise Garage staple and is an acknowledged disco classic. After years of performing and doing backup vocals for artists such as The Kay Gees, Salsoul Orchestra, Phreek, Herbie Mann, and others, Venus Dodson was offered an album deal with RFC Records. The resulting Patrick Adams-produced full length generated a charting single in 'Night Rider', but the album owes much of its greatness to her sophisticated lyric and delivery -- 1979 was a lucrative year for disco, and Venus resisted the pressure to churn out cookie cutter, sexually charged dancefloor fodder and image, possibly hurting her success at the time, but the resulting album holds up as an important record that year. Starting with the cover photo, it is immediately apparent that she's not your standard female diva in a revealing outfit, rather she's dressed in a dignified and exotic wrap, her intense gaze at the camera and unsmiling face running counter to the period's conventional cover art. This was no throwaway listen. The vocal content backed that up, with a distinct absence of sexually suggestive lyrics typical of what disco was known for, leaning more to the R&B and soul of the Moments or The Isleys. First time on CD."

"From the nasty opening keyboard riff on 'Discomotion', to the flawless yacht rock/ballad of 'My Lady' to the rudimentary drum programing on 'Mainline is Sunshine', this album is chock full of perfectly executed disco-funk breaks and segues that belie its West Berlin origin. Not sounding unlike the Whatnauts' or Norman Connors' late 1970's/boogie output at points, or a less-produced Rhythm Heritage for their technical prowess in a relatively raw context. Originally released on CIP Filmproduktions, a label more associated with film than music releases, the band is so tight it sounds as if they'd been culled from some library music session crew. The band's leader L. H. Tempelhagen and singer The Black Magic Lady have fallen into obscurity since this remarkable one-off release. First time on CD."

ROACH, STEVE Dreamtime Return 2LP
"Steve Roach's 1988 double-disc is back in production for the first time in 30 years. Dreamtime Return was inspired by multiple visits to the Australian Outback. The concept behind Dreamtime has secured the album as one of the pivotal works in ambient music today. The tales told over two LPs touch on the earth's origins, and the role humans have to play in it. Inspired by the stories of Australia's first people, Steve Roach used a combination of synthesizers and ancient Aboriginal instruments to create the album's signature sound, most notably the dumbek & the didgeridoo. Dreamtime Return travels through unexpected pathways with slow moving textures, as tones scatter into brilliant arrays and evolve into a mystic long-distance journey. DEAS, CAM Time Exercises LP
Time Exercises is a complex study in amorphous polymetric rhythms by UK artist Cam Deas for The Death of Rave. His first LP composed solely for modular synths and computer, Cam's follow-up to the acclaimed String Studies (ALT 018LP, 2014) marks a headlong tilt from acoustic to electronic spheres with a staggering effect resulting from meticulous research and process. It sounds as advanced as Xenakis or Roland Kayn superstructures, with the rhythmic displacement of Fis or Autechre, and with a grasp of slippery, mind-bending timbral dissonance comparable to Coil and Rashad Becker records. Cam's six Time Exercises form both a bold break with -- and an extension of -- the avant, folk, blues, and outernational traditions that he's worked to deconstruct and fluidly syncretize over the past decade. In the past four years he's stepped away from the guitar as a compositional tool, turning to electronic hardware in a focused effort to consolidate myriad tunings and meters with a precision that had previously eluded him in the acoustic sphere. Severed from the tactility and sentimentality of instrumental inflection, Cam's disembodied music plays out a thrilling dramaturgy and syntax of alien dissonance and disorienting rhythmic resolution. Harmonic shapes as densely widescreen as those in Roland Kayn's Cybernetic Music (1995) roil in unfathomable fever dream space, where massed batteries of synthetic percussion swarm like an orchestra of Cut Hands in viscous formation, and where polychromatic mentasm figures converge like cenobites laying siege to Rashad Becker's utopia. On Time Exercises Cam articulates a synthetic musical language that speaks to the listener in myriad, quantum tongues awaiting to be deciphered by keen ears everywhere. It's an outstanding record for lovers of forward-looking but deeply rooted electronic music. Master and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

XOR GATE Conic Sections LP
XOR Gate is the brainchild of Heinrich Mueller, one half of Drexciya and Dopplereffekt. In linguistic or electronic logic, the XOR Gate designates a device, digital or grammatical, which outputs a value only when two differing inputs are fed into it. This can be summed up with the formula "one or the other but not neither, nor both." A conic section is a shape created as a plane intersects a cone. This can result in different figures such as a circle, an ellipse, a parabola, or a hyperbola. Conic Sections here is composed of eight themes, or shapes, over which waveform and synthesis entirely merge with human emotions. The line is blurred. These eight themes are intertwined, forming one long musical string. The line is forever blurred. Conic Sections was commissioned by ArtCenter South Florida in Miami, for the AN IMAGE exhibit. Comes in silver print sleeve.

PRATES/MIECIO ASKANASY, JOSE Tam... Tam... Tam...! LP
2018 limted repress; LP version. Trunk Records presents the first reissue of Tam... Tam... Tam...!, an incredibly rare Brazilian LP by José Prates and Miecio Askanasy. In August of 2014, London-based DJ and record collector Gilles Peterson, who had been offered an original copy for $4,700, sent out a request for someone to reissue this extraordinary album. Originally issued in a one-time 1958 pressing as part of Askanasy's 1950s touring Braziliana show, Tam... Tam... Tam...! is a landmark in the development of the Brazilian sound that would explode around the world in the decade to follow. It's stunning both as a historical touchstone and as a standalone musical triumph. The solid blueprint of 1960s Brazilian music runs through it; for example, "N?n? Imborô" clearly prefigures Sérgio Mendes's 1966 hit "Mas Que Nada." The infectious rhythms, melodies, and exotic sounds that fill this album are deep, raw, and totally engaging. And the more one listens to Tam... Tam... Tam...! the more one hears its importance and future influence. This reissue comes at a time when, in a world saturated with information, few important things have escaped attention and reappraisal. Finding anything new and genuinely incredible is a rare feat. This is a prime example of amazing, influential music that until now has remained hidden. In producing this reissue, spurred on by Peterson's request, Trunk Records found that no master recordings could be located. The original 1950s label showed no interest in a reissue, but Ed Motta, the renowned artist, producer, and record collector, agreed to transcribe his original copy on his EMT deck and send the files from Brazil to the UK. The sound was not in the best condition, and the original 1950s vinyl pressing has several musical inconsistencies. Trunk Records painstakingly worked toward a suitable sonic balance, making sure to maintain the bright and driving original sound without cleaning it up so much that the life of the music was diminished. Accordingly, the vinyl edition of reissue was pressed with some very slight surface noise -- any more cleaning would interfere with the true wax sound. Vinyl edition includes original full color LP sleeve.

DJAVAN A Voz, O Violao, A Musica De LP
RSD 2018 release. Reissue of Djavan's debut LP, A Voz, O Violão, A Música De Djavan, one of the milestones in Brazilian music from the post-bossa nova years, originally released in 1976. MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) has often been a no-go zone among those inclined to approach Brazilian music only from a crossover perspective. That would explain why this outstanding Djavan's first album is usually overlooked by those who aim to find a pinch of acid guitars, bars of jazz improvisations or funk beats in every Brazilian record they own. A Voz, O Violão, A Música De Djavan should be a mandatory purchase for anyone with the slightest interest in Brazilian music. The beauty of the undoubted classic "Flor De Lis" alone should be encouraging enough to add this gem to any record collection, but the entire album is magnificent. Although some of the arrangements of the album may fall into the jazzier side of things and, yes, there are funky moments here and there, on this LP Djavan showcases acoustic samba music in full effect. Who has yet to hear "Maria Das Mercedes", "Para-Raio", "Muito Obrigado" for the first time will be gladly surprised by the happy and endearing melodies written by the artist and the musical sonority of his lyrics. Djavan is backed here by the magnificent flute of Altamiro Carrilho, one of the most representative "choro" musicians in Brazil, and the subtle keyboard licks played by Edson Frederico, who at the time was often performing with artists such as Maria Creuza, Sonia Santos or Jorge Ben, and had just recorded a solo album one year earlier. Decades after its original release date in 1976, "A voz, o violão, a música de Djavan" remains one of the milestones in Brazilian music from the post-bossa nova years, encompassing a wide range of traditional local sounds next to Djavan's own personal style. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

CASH, JOHNNY Blood, Sweat And Tears LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Johnny Cash's Blood, Sweat And Tears, originally released in 1963. Like many of Johnny Cash's albums from the late '50s and early '60s, Blood, Sweat And Tears is a concept album. This time around, for his 15th long player, The Man in Black sings a suite of songs about the plight of the working man. Featuring The Carter Family on backing vocals and longtime guitarist Luther Perkins, this is a killer album that features two classics he'd later record on the legendary Folsom Prison sessions ("The Legend of John Henry's Hammer" and "Busted"). Another classic from Johnny Cash.

SIMONE, NINA Nina At Newport LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Nina Simone's Nina At Newport, originally released in 1960. When this album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960, Nina Simone had just had her first Top 20 hit with "I Loves You, Porgy", but the "Porgy" found here (written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, most famous for "I Can't Give You Anything But Love") is actually a continuation of Gershwin's original version of the story. Other highlights include "Flo Me La", an African work chant, and "Little Liza Jane", an African American folk song. A truly marvelous live performance from one of the most original voices in 20th century music.

MINGUS, CHARLES Pithecanthropus Erectus LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Charles Mingus's Pithecanthropus Erectus, originally released in 1956. Pithecanthropus Erectus is the Charles Mingus record where he really begins to take hold of his own personal vision of how jazz music could look. After cutting his teeth on the L.A. scene and touring with Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton, Mingus moved to New York, began Debut Records with Max Roach, and entered into the most productive and creative decade of his career. This album is held in the same esteem as Mingus Ah Um (1959) and The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady (1963) among jazz aficionados, and one need listen no further than the ten-minute title track, a tone poem about the rise and fall of man which includes one of the earliest free jazz/improvisation segments put to tape. Absolutely essential jazz from the late great Charles Mingus.

LATEEF, YUSEF Jazz For The Thinker LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Yusef Lateef's Jazz For The Thinker, originally released in 1957. Known for his pioneering and multi-instrumental blend of jazz and Afro-Eastern musical traditions, Yusef Lateef has never been content to use his music to merely entertain but has long strived to encourage his audiences to engage their minds as well as their ears. This approach was evident even on his groundbreaking debut album as leader, the aptly titled, Jazz For The Thinker. Unlike most debut efforts in jazz at the time, this album is made up entirely of Lateef's own original compositions, further proving that this was a man with a vision right from the start. Here Lateef, on tenor sax, is backed by Curtis Fuller on trombone, Hugh Lawson on piano, Ernie Farrow on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums.

GRUSIN, DAVE The Friends Of Eddie Coyle OST LP
OFFICIAL RSD 2018 release. Wewantsounds present the first ever vinyl release of Dave Grusin's cult funky original soundtrack for Peter Yates's superb crime film from 1973, The Friends Of Eddie Coyle. The music composed here is both funky and jazzy and on a par with Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin's best soundtracks of the early '70s. Peter Yates, who had directed Bullitt (1968), knew who to go for when it came to outstanding musicians, and Grusin was certainly one of the best young composers in Hollywood at the time. Grusin would sign another more famous score in 1975 with 3 Days Of The Condor, but the Eddie Coyle soundtrack recorded two years before is even more stunning. It plays like a hypnotic slow-burning suite and is performed by the cream of the LA jazz scene, including John Guerin, Chuck Rainey, Tom Scott, Bud Shank, and percussionist Emil Richards. Amazingly, the score never got released on vinyl when the film first came out in 1973, making this the soundtrack's first edition. Remastered from the original tapes, it includes one bonus alternate take. Includes a new essay by leading UK writer and musician David Toop. Housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, the release features a stunning cover by highly sought-after Alternative Movie Poster illustrator Oliver Barrett. From David Toop's liner notes: "The Friends Of Eddie Coyle may not be Grusin's best known or most celebrated score but, like both book and film, it's a quiet classic." --David Toop

KAWAI, KENJI Ghost In The Shell (Original Soundtrack) LP
2018 repress. We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the ?rst ever official vinyl pressing of the soundtrack for Mamoru Oshii's critically acclaimed and all around legendary science ?ction anime ?lm Ghost In The Shell (1995), adapted from Masamune Shirow's groundbreaking manga series of the same name. The haunting score is composed by Kenji Kawai, one of Japan's most celebrated soundtrack composers alongside Joe Hisaishi and Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose work includes Hideo Nakata's Ring (1998) and Ring 2 (1999), Death Note (2006), Hong Kong ?lms Seven Swords by Tsui Hark (2005) and Ip Man by Wilson Yip (2008), and countless others. Kawai's compositions see ancient harmonies and percussions uncannily mesh with synthesized sounds of the modern world to convey a sumptuous balance between folklore tradition and futuristic outlook. For its iconic main theme "Making Of Cyborg", Kawai had a choir chant a wedding song in ancient Japanese following Bulgarian folk harmonies, setting the standard for a timeless and unparalleled soundtrack that admirably echoes the ?lm's musings on the nature of humanity in a technologically advanced world. Ghost In The Shell is widely considered one of the best anime ?lms of all time and its in?uence has been felt in the work of numerous movie directors, including James Cameron's Avatar (2009), the Wachowskis's The Matrix (1999), and Steven Spielberg's AI: Arti?cial Intelligence (2001). For fans of anime, manga, movie soundtracks, science ?ction, ambient, folklore, Japan, Akira (1988), arti?cial intelligence, Midori Takada. TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass LP
2018 repress; LP version. Comes in a Stoughton "Tip-On" jacket; Includes printed inner sleeves. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes.

K-LONE BB-8/Barbarossa 12"
The young Londoner explores his formative roots in dubstep and grime -- albeit from a startlingly fresh, forward-facing perspective. The tracks loosely recall the off-kilter rhythms of early James Blake and Joe, but their psychedelic melodies have as much in common with the contemporary experiments of Leif, Peverelist, and Duckett. Hotly tipped by dubstep heads Commodo, V.I.V.E.K, and Boofy & Kursk.
