BAD STREAM Bad Stream CD
Having grown up with and on the internet, Martin Steer (1986) has transformed its pull into a concept album that is just as immediate and intangible as the digital world. Bad Stream is guitars and machines vanishing in the spaces between Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails only to reemerge amidst ambient, noise, and drone. Bad Stream, then, is his modus operandi -- a hybrid soundtrack to the feelings of resignation, isolation, and cynicism within neoliberal cyberspace and to that strangely numbing comfort of bodies transmuting into zeros and ones in real time. "I look at my phone even when I play guitar," says Martin Steer, "and that isn't even entirely voluntary. The 2010s really changed my perception of how digital technologies and social media affect me as a musician. Through Bad Stream I want to make sense of this particular kind of anxiety, and to use sensory overstimulation as a way to develop an independent and progressive musical language." The past seven years took Martin and his laptop and guitar from Berlin to Mexico and Nepal and, as a founding member of Frittenbude, into the German charts and to various festival stages. And yet, Bad Stream is a true "Berlin album", out of Friedrichshain, Neukölln, and Kreuzberg and will be released on Martin Steer's own label ANTIME. It was recorded with real drums and programmed beats, with shoegaze guitars, acid baselines, piano, smartphone synths, violins, field recordings from the darknet and his voice, whose hopeless timbre conveys reflections on systems, the future, drugs, people, and his own place. In his ever-expanding A/V live shows and in the music videos, this is supplemented by complex visuals.

FLORA FM Atomic Garden 12"
After moving from Detroit to Seattle, producer Taylor Hawkins suddenly found himself on Flora FM. Previously recording as Community Corporation, Emerald City brought new sounds into Hawkins's repertoire. Seattle's bins, full of UK imports, early '90s ambient techno records, and the IDM that followed, brought judicious breakbeats and top-notch electro sensibilities to his sound. Recorded as single live takes using an MPC to control his drum machines and synthesizers, the Flora FM music flowed quickly from Hawkins. Atomic Garden includes four of the most danceable tracks on his digital debut album, Discovery In The Atomic Garden. Artwork by Patrick Savile.

POOLE, BENNETT WILSON Bennett Wilson Poole CD
Danny Wilson (Danny And The Champions Of The World, Grand Drive), and Robin Bennett (The Dreaming Spires, Goldrush, Saint Etienne) join forces with Tony Poole (Starry Eyed And Laughing), producer extraordinaire, and king of the electric twelve-string Rickenbacker. Their voices, guitars, and songwriting combining to marvelous effect in a collection of songs that began as uplifting acoustic music and grew into something far more wide-ranging and transcendent. Pulling on influences from the '60s pop of The Byrds, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys, through to the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, with dashes of Petty and Springsteen thrown in for good measure, perhaps the most remarkable thing is that what shines through all of this is the quality and originality of the songwriting. The songs deal with wide-ranging issues and personal truths, from the aptly-titled opener "Soon Enough" through the biographical tale of Danny's family in "Wilson General Store", and the politically-charged rallying cry of "Hate Won't Win" to the social commentary of album-closer "Lifeboat (Take a Picture of Yourself)". All three collaborators have had critical acclaim in their own right. Danny Wilson's credentials go back to his days in Grand Drive with brother Julian, and his consistent high-caliber output with his Champions Of The World led them to sweeping the board at the first UK Americana Awards with "Album", "Artist" and "Song" of the year awards richly deserved; Tony Poole's Starry Eyed And Laughing were hailed as "the English Byrds" on the back of their two CBS-released albums in the mid-seventies and he has since built an enviable reputation as producer and engineer; Robin Bennett has been relentlessly turning out timeless songs from his Oxfordshire base in bands from Goldrush to The Dreaming Spires, alongside founding two award-winning festivals (Truck and Wood) and lending his multi-instrumental skills to Saint Etienne. But in Bennett Wilson Poole, the trio seem to have stumbled upon that rarity of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

DORIAS BARACCA Dorias Baracca CD
Dorias Baracca's existence was cut short when lead singer and main songwriter, Buster Svendsen, passed away in the summer of 2011 -- incidentally the same day as the album was completed. This is the first time this material has been released. Swirling, melodic dream-pop wrapped in loud, kaleidoscopic guitars, heavy drums, and ecstatic noise. Bleak but sensuous, visceral but tuneful, brimming with youthful wonder and confusion. Dorias Baracca was formed in Odense, Denmark in 2007. They released an EP on Club AC30 in 2010, a release that received plenty praise: "... Already light years ahead of many peers who've spent entire careers searching for a similar happy medium", wrote Drowned In Sound. It turned out to be the band's only release while in existence. Slowdive never sounded this loud, hard-hitting, and desperate. My Bloody Valentine was never this colorful and psychedelic. Dorias Baracca married the thick haze of guitars to trippy psychedelia, and ultimately had as much in common with American bands such as (early) Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr. as with the more ethereal British bands. This album would be the last thing the band ever recorded, and for various reasons it has remained unreleased since its completion in 2011, until now. Although they were only in their late teens at the time it's a fully formed album: it's the sound of a band with total confidence in what they're doing, superb skills for melody and arrangement, as well as youthful energy.

SCNTST Scenes And Sketches From The Lab 2LP
SCNTST provides the fantastic album Scenes And Sketches From The Lab on Boysnoize Records, three years after his last one, Puffer (BNR 024LP, 2015). Bryan Müller makes classy shadowy techno as Skee Mask on Illian Tape, but as SCNTST he focuses more on expansive and cinematic atmospheres, rich melody, and shifting timbres. As such, Scenes And Sketches From The Lab is a considered and cerebral affair that shows maturity and musicality across all fourteen tracks. It reimagines techno, ambient, bass, IDM, and electronica into new forms that are artful and highly detailed, and as such it works as well in headphones as it no doubt will in the club. Opening up the album is "Dilettante Fonk", four minutes of lithe and celestial breakbeats with heavenly pads that suspend you in a crystal clear blue sky. "Espera" is a weightless mix of stuttering synth riffs and broken rhythmic patterns which work in a manic but beautiful fashion above a cacophony of live sounding drums. The exquisite synth craft continues on tracks like the pixelated "And Don't Dis The Arp" and beguiling experimentation of "08141 PtII". No drums in this album are standard, they all explore a wide range of styles and tempos, pushing the envelope as they go. Some lurch and loop and others bounce about loosely below blissful chords such as on "The Ends From Castle Road". More introverted moments come on "Morf (Tomchord Mix)", the tempo rises with driving techno on "Jomox Plus MFB" then SCNTST shows a playful side on the swaggering "Outline Dub". Acid lines makes an appearance on the brain-melting "Opus Quod Acidum" and after serene hi-fidelity percussive workouts like "'14 Tepéca" things close on the excellently doleful ambiance of "Power Remains". This is an utterly spell-binding album that shows off impeccable studio skills as well as a wealth of fresh ideas.

RUIZ DEL POZO, ARTURO Native Compositions LP
By the end of the 1970s, a new generation of musicians who brought together ancestral and forefront, became visible in Lima as they searched for native sounds and the new tools of technology. Amongst them, we find Arturo Ruiz Del Pozo, composer who studied with Edgar Valcárcel. After studying at the National Conservatory in Lima he traveled to London in 1976 to register himself at the Royal College of Music where he took a master's degree in electronic composition. Ruiz Del Pozo had left Lima with a bag full of Peruvian native instruments with the idea of utilizing them in his future compositions. In London he was taught by Lawrence Casserly, one the prominent figures of Britain's electro acoustic composition; a musician who was fascinated by the interaction of instruments and electronic media way back from the times of his fundamental audiovisual experimentation group Hydra. Ruiz del Pozo utilized a series of concrete music resources learnt from Casserly. Based on sounds that came from native instruments and diverse manipulations to which these sounds were subject of, he obtained textures and sonorities, which, at the same time they invoked rituals, they opened a new field of experimentation; a collage of sounds of Andean reminiscence, echoes and abstractions, which will entrance you an unprecedented sound universe. These recordings were named Native Compositions (Composiciones Nativas) and they were released in a cassette tape format in 1984 by the author himself. More than 30 years later Buh Records rescued these recordings to inaugurate its Essential Sounds (Sonidos Esenciales) collection, dedicated to publishing strange and fascinating artifacts of Peruvian experimental music of this period, in a CD edition (2015), which was quickly sold out. Now the label presents its first release on vinyl.

FLORES, MIGUEL Primitivo LP
Miguel Flores is, alongside musicians such as Arturo Ruiz Del Pozo, Luis David Aguilar, or Manongo Mujica, one of the most important representatives of that period that spans from mid-70s to mid-80s, when experimenting musically in Peru united modern composing techniques of avant-garde music and the search of the sounds of mother land. A drummer turned into a multi instrument player, who began by playing rock from mid '60s on, with groups such as The Loop's, Thee Image, and most pointedly with PAX, iconic hard rock band of the '70s, Miguel Flores tackled Peruvian folk music by 1974 with his group Ave Acustica, which included non-conventional musical techniques into their performances. Those were times when folk music was widely promoted, as a consequence of the policies of Juan Velasco Alvarado's nationalistic policies. The appearance of the Talleres de la Canción Popular, headed by Celso Garrido Lecca, in 1974, was decisive to brood a new generation of folk and new song groups. In this environment, and after leaving PAX, Miguel Flores goes deep into his interests in folk and sound experiments as well as free jazz, his attempts to fuse what was considered could not be fused, being rejected by all sides equally. Upon his return to Lima, after an intense tour to Japan in 1980, Miguel Flores was commissioned by choreographer Luciana Proaño to write the score for her new contemporary performance Mitos Y Mujeres. Miguel Flores called Corina Bartra, Arturo De La Cruz, Manuel Miranda, and Aberlardo Oquendo to play the music which brought together folklore and psychedelia, free jazz, electronics, tribal music and ashaninka chants. A hypnotic sound stretches a bridge between ancient and avant-garde, the spirit of psychedelic rock, free jazz and pure sound experimentation. The studio recording of what was the score for Mitos Y Mujeres was kept away for more than 30 years. Now finally has its first edition on LP. This LP is part of Buh Records' Sounds Essentials Collection, curated by Luis Alvarado.

EL POLEN Cholo LP
Buh Records present for the first time in vinyl format, the reissues of the two first and fundamental albums by El Polen, the legendary Peruvian band formed in the late 1960s by brothers Juan Luis and Raul Pereira. Two records highly sought by collectors round the world due to the majesty of a sound where you find Andean music, folk and psychedelia. 1972's Cholo, presented here, and 1973's Fuera De La Ciudad ("Out of the City") (BR 090LP) are two landmarks in Peruvian music, as they are two works that start a path for fusion between rock and native music in Peru and Latin America. This influential Peruvian band, pioneer of the fusion of Andean music, folk, and psychedelia, is the favorite artist of Devendra Banhart. With Cholo, recorded in 1972, El Polen and rock fusion began their history in Peru. Seven songs emerge: "La Flor" ("The Flower"), "Cholito Pantalon Blanco" ("White Pants Little Cholo"), "Paisajes De Quenas" ("Quena Landscapes"), "Valicha", "Sitting Dreaming", "Tondero", and "Sequencias De Organillo Y Poliphon". The name of the album comes from the film that director Bernardo Batievski shot to honor the life of soccer player Hugo "Cholo" Sotil. "We were the only group that auditioned for the film. Batievski immediately after hearing us said: 'this is the mestizo music I need.' Part of the repertoire we had in those times was included in the record, these were songs we had already played in many concerts and that had matured for more than a year", Juan Luis remembers, 48 years after recording Cholo. For this record the musicians sat on the floor, turned the studio lights off, and recorded "the magic of Cholo" in only three hours. The input by Ayacucho musician Alejandro Vivanco was incredible. Rock roots, symphonic, progressive, psychedelic tints emerge from these songs combined with Peruvian folklore. The Cholo adventure was possible with the participation of Juan Sebastian Montesinos, Ernesto Pinto, Fernando Silva, and Beto Martinez. The present edition in vinyl format has been produced from the master tapes with the authorization and supervision of the band itself. This is the starting point for a series of releases of a new collection of Buh Records dedicated to El Polen.

SEXORES East / West LP
Sexores is one of the most important bands that have emerged in Ecuador and they are one of the biggest references of the electronic dream pop sound in Latin America. East / West by Sexores is a double album that reflects their idea of evolution as a band. On one hand, there are eight synth-pop songs with a very marked aesthetic; on the other, the band got into experimenting with different types of instruments to create environments that go along with a side that they did not want to leave behind. East / West is a perfect balance between an idea of the band that gazed at their shoes and the legacy of a whole generation of music made with synthesizers and futurism. East / West was produced by Daniel Pasquel and co-produced by Sexores.

TYNDALL Reflexionen CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's third album, Reflexionen, originally released in 1982. The third Tyndall album is less experimental than the electronic duo's previous work from 1981 Traumland (BB 287CD/LP). The songs, featuring vocoder vocals, are more clearly structured into verses and choruses, the arrangements more considered. Stylistically, Reflexionen is a mix of synth-pop and electronic krautrock, at times not a million miles away from the early works of Andreas Dorau. More so than on their preceding instrumental albums, Tyndall's Reflexionen held a mirror to the band members' personal situation and the prevalent mood of the period during which they made the record. First of all, the two musicians (Rudolf Langer, Jürgen Krehan) had relocated to West Berlin, an exclave in the GDR. Due to the fact that German military was forbidden by the Allied Powers in West Berlin, neither Krehan nor Langer had to do national service or its alternative, community service. Meanwhile, 1982 was the year when German-speaking pop and rock found its way into the charts alongside old-fashioned Schlager songs. Punk and new wave had done the groundwork a few years earlier, but the music of bands like Fehlfarben, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, or the Doraus Und Die Marinas were now ready to enter the mainstream under the banner of Neue Deutsche Welle. Music with German lyrics was flavor of the season. On a lot of tracks Jürgen Krehan sings in German on Reflexionen as well (using a vocoder). Reflexionen is a less experimental album than its predecessor Traumland. Due in no small measure to the vocoder vocals with verses and choruses, the tracks feel more clearly structured, the arrangements more considered. Bass octave, simple, breezy, dreamy harpsichord melody sprinkles, cheerful, carefree, sometimes enigmatic lyrics. The album closes with a series of eminently listenable instrumentals, which hint at the next stage of musical evolution which would ultimately reach its conclusion on the fourth and final Tyndall album. This reissue marks the first CD issue of Reflexionen.

Having successfully released three albums, the Berlin-based electronic duo Tyndall fell out so badly with one another in 1983 that they ended up splitting the fourth album in two, taking a side each. Jürgen Krehan's half showcases his customarily nimble synth-pop, as well as several pieces influenced by classical music. Rudi Langer launches into celestial revelry on the other side, underpinned here and there by a driving beat. Nevertheless: both sides sound unmistakably like Tyndall. On Durch Die Zeiten Jürgen Krehan used a music computer for the first time, aided by a mysterious musician by the name of Yin Yang from Tokyo, according to the original credits, who apparently contributed computer programs and two tracks entitled "Barock" and "Klassik". Yin Yang may well be a pseudonym Krehan used, also surfacing on the rare and highly-prized cassette Flusswelt released on David Elliott's YHR Tapes label in 1983. As anticipated by the last tracks of the previous album, 1982's Reflexionen (BB 288CD/LP), the pieces here are structurally clearer, more developed, moving in a more classical direction, away from synth-pop. Rudolf Langer opens the B side with a track called "Kambrium". This geological era was ushered in by the "Cambrian explosion". He paints this "big bang" of animal life in almost religious, idyllic, fanciful tones, with roaring sounds and futuristic pitch sweeps. The next track, "Silur", references the Silurian period, characterized by massive tectonic activity which precipitated biological crises. Next up, the jovially marching "Karbon" may be Langer's vision of the indefatigable cycle of luxuriant vegetation as it sought to survive in the carbon deposits of this age. The LP finishes with a track dedicated to the Permian period. In retrospect, a certain conceptual rigor can be attributed to Tyndall's releases. A common thread runs through each album, allowing the tracks to unfold in sequence. On the one hand, the album borrows from classical notions, on the other, Langer's playfully impressionistic works. Durch Die Zeiten was the last record released by the Tyndall duo. Both musicians continued to make music, just not with each other. Rudolf Langer teamed up with Peter Preuß to found LAPRE. Jürgen Krehan released a number of new age albums as Nik Tyndall. This reissue marks the first CD issue of Durch Die Zeiten.

YOUNG, DENNIS Synthesis: Electronic Music 1984-1988 CD
Dennis Young is best known as the percussionist of the New York band Liquid Liquid, which is known for their piece "Cavern" from 1983, which in turn became very well-known because Grandmaster Flash sampled it and used it as the basis for their hit "White Lines". But Young was more than just a member of the band, he produced plenty of his own music, much of it reflecting his passion for analog electronics. He was fascinated by the pioneers of the genre. In 2016 Bureau B released Wave (BB 219CD/LP), a collection of pieces Young had issued on cassettes between 1985-1988. Synthesis, by contrast, features tracks from 1984-1988 which have never been previously released. But let's allow Dennis Young to tell his story himself: "My love for electronic music goes back to the late '70s when I decided to buy my first synthesizer, a rare used vintage Davolisint made in Italy, after seeing Keith Emerson perform live with Emerson Lake Palmer. This led to my discovery of more electronic music artists using synthesizers such as Klaus Schulze, Tim Blake, Larry Fast, Edgar Froese, Brian Eno, and Cluster just to name a few. My musical challenge was then to create my own electronic music using this instrument. After experimenting in the early '80s with live recordings using a reel-to-reel tape machine I purchased my first multi-track recording system in 1984. When Liquid Liquid was on hiatus I was able to devote full time to this music and do professional recordings at my home studio in Edison, New Jersey. I added more synthesizers to include a Korg Mono/Poly, a Korg Poly Six, a Moog Rogue, and later the Korg M1. Every track was put through various delay and reverb units and I added vocal parts and along with guitar where I felt it was needed. Synthesis is the follow up to Wave released on Bureau B in 2016. At the time I used the above mentioned assortment of analog synthesizers to create the music you will hear on this recording. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together."

VANDERMARK/MICHAEL SNOW, KEN Duol CD
Although he is best known as a groundbreaking experimental filmmaker, one of the architects of structural cinema, and visual artist, Michael Snow has been active as a musician since the 1950s. In Greenwich Village of the 1960s, his loft was the site of concerts by Cecil Taylor and other paragons of free jazz, and Snow's film New York Eye And Ear Control featured a soundtrack by Albert Ayler's group and starred its members (ESPDISK 1016CD/LP). A brilliant keyboardist and occasional trumpeter, Snow was a key figure in Toronto's improvised music scene, performing and recording with the ensemble CCMC, and as an improvising pianist he's worked in myriad contexts with many of the world's leading free players. Saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Ken Vandermark first learned about Snow as a film student in Montreal, where the classic work Wavelength (1967) confounded and fascinated him. In 2015, Vandermark and Snow performed together for the first time as a duet, resulting in three astounding long-form improvisations. Snow dug in hard at the piano, with clusters and repeated figures, while Vandermark was explosive on tenor and surgical on clarinet, opting often for the latter. The entire evening's music is released here, an early painting by Snow adorning the cover, and a still from the concert's videotaped footage spanning the gatefold interior. Personnel: Ken Vandermark - reeds; Michael Snow - piano. Recorded on June 20th, 2015 by Ted Phillips at Array Space, Toronto. Edited and mastered by Alex Inglizian with assistance from Ken Vandermark at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago. Painting by Michael Snow, Duol, 1960, oil on canvas, 70.2 x 45.1 inches, Collection of the estate of Signy Eaton.

GUSTAFSSON/JASON ADASIEWICZ, MATS Timeless CD
Discussing this impending studio date, the indefatigable saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and intrepid vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz decided to compose new pieces for one another. The resulting tracks -- which also include a hallucinogenic arrangement of "Timeless", dedicated to its composer, the recently deceased guitarist John Abercrombie -- show a markedly different side of both musicians. Quiet, at times tender, this meeting of like-minded musicians evoked a new kind of tension, not one birthed out of screams and wallops, but instead one marshaling the power of restraint. Gustafsson's work with groups like The Thing and Fire! Orchestra have made him one of the most renowned figures in contemporary energy music, and Adasiewicz's joyous noise in his own bands and with Peter Brötzmann, Rob Mazurek, and many others have likewise earned him top status in the pantheon of today's free musicians. On Timeless, they explore low dynamics, static soundscape, and melodic lyricism, infused with passion and intellect. One track features the wooden-keyed African balafon, coaxing a buoyant response on alto from Gustafsson, while their mutual boyhood love of highly select fusion records provided an unforeseen jumping off point for the whole record. On the cover, a painting by Charline von Heyl; across the interior, a photo portrait of the musicians. Personnel: Mats Gustafsson - alto, tenor and baritone saxophones; Jason Adasiewicz - vibraphone and balafon. Recorded October 1, 2017, by Alex Inglizian at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago.

LONBERG-HOLM AND THE AMPHIBIANS OF THE EVERGLADES FEATURING GUSTAVO MATAMOROS, FRED Bow Hard At The Frog CD
Never one to shy away from unusual projects, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm set out into the mosquito-infested swamps of Florida's Everglades in search of a host of amphibious collaborators. In the night air, he bowed and plucked in conversation with the environment, especially the vocalizing frogs, which seemed to take him on as an exotic member of their own. Impeccably documented by the experienced soundscape artist and field recordist Gustavo Matamoros, working like a perverse herpetologist, Lonberg-Holm may have created a whole new genre of experimental audio: outdoor interspecies improvisation. Other features of the evening ambience are warmly embraced -- a passing car, mysterious water noises, even the incessant mosquitoes. Determining where these swamp sounds end and the maestro's cello begins is perhaps the greatest challenge of all. Not something you can say often: Bow Hard At The Frog is a genuinely unique sonic experience. Personnel: Fred Lonberg-Holm - cello; Amphibians of the Everglades - noises; Gustavo Matamoros - field recordings. Recorded at Everglades National Park the evening of February 02, 2016, as part of the January, 2016, Subtropics Artist Residency at Audiotheque: Fred Lonberg-Holm, resident artist; Gustavo Matamoros, collaborator. Gustavo used Sennheiser microphones in a midside configuration straight into a SoundDevices digital field recorder. As an integral part of his compositional practice, Gustavo Matamoros makes creative audio recordings of South Florida environments for sound diaries, artwork, performances, installations and collaborations with other artists. The title comes from a direction in the score for Iannis Xennakis's Kottos.

LACY, STEVE Stamps 2CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Steve Lacy's Stamps, originally released in 1979 as a double-LP on Hat Hut. Stamps was Steve Lacy's first for the legendary Swiss label, and it remains one of the strongest statements of what he termed the "scratchy seventies". With the classic lineup of Lacy's soprano saxophone, Steve Potts on soprano and alto sax, Irene Aebi on cello (and singing on one track), Kent Carter on bass, and Oliver Johnson on drums, the recording catches the band live, performing Lacy's angular, intervallic compositions, using arrangements that leave the rough patina, rather than buffing things to a smooth shine. This is the first time the important music has been reissued on CD, adding a bonus track, all remastered from the original tapes. The double-disc package sports a facsimile reproduction of the gorgeous artwork by Klaus Baumgärtner, with action photographs from the concerts on the interior. A must for Lacy fans and for anyone interested in creative music.

HARRIS/DON PULLEN 360º EXPERIENCE, BEAVER A Well-Kept Secret CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present the first CD reissue of Beaver Harris and Don Pullen 360º Experience's A Well-Kept Secret, originally released on Shemp Records in 1984. Of all the never-issued-on-CD items in history's dustbin, A Well-Kept Secret is perhaps the most egregious. The beautiful studio recording, made under the watchful ear of überproducer Hal Willner, was first issued on LP in 1985 on Willner's own Shemp label. With its unconventional lineup featuring steel drums, Latin percussion, and French horns, along with the co-leaders' drum-kit and piano, it is among the most wonderful outings of its decade. Pullen was in top form, his inside-outside approach to the keyboard perhaps optimally heard on the exuberant "Double Arc Jake", where the bright melody suddenly breaks into pieces, snapping back into miraculous shape. The band includes Hamiet Bluiett on baritone saxophone and Ricky Ford on tenor saxophone, along with Buster Williams on bass, Francis Hayes on steel pans, and a special brass section led by Sharon Freeman on the 17-minute "Goree". All compositions by Harris and Pullen. Includes original cover design by Ralph Steadman reproduced in all its glory, the CD was remastered from unplayed vinyl, as the tapes were destroyed in a fire. This is one of the classic records of creative music in the '80s, available for the first time in any digital form. Recorded by Vince McGarry at the Power Station, New York, and remixed at Skyline Recording Studio. Mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, New York. Photos by David Gahr.

DUB TAYLOR Caves & Cages 2x12"
An artist as versatile as Alex Krüger is a rare find these days, not only did he release numerous EPs and albums as Tigerskin or Korsakow since the mid-90s, he's also been on the forefront of the dub techno movement since 1999 with outings on classic labels such as Raum...Musik, Force Tracks, and 3B/ United States of Mars. Now ten years after his last album on Opossum Recordings (2008) Alex is back with this well-crafted, genre-bending full-length Caves & Cages. From deep techno cuts through rippling ambient excursions to funky reggae infused live jams with Haushausen this work is yet another milestone in the creative bubble Alex lives in (i.e. his studio). A predominantly analog producer, Alex recorded most sounds for Caves & Cages on his modular synths and vintage gear at Organic Domain during 2017 and early 2018. Throughout the album tension ebbs and flows effortlessly via syncopated subs, analog improvisation, subtle chord stabs, and sustained swells interspersed with textured field and home recordings. The ambient opener "Intra" sets the tone for the album. Rich with alien atmospheres, distant soundscapes, out-of-reach voices, and licks of live instruments dug up from numerous recordings dating back as far as 30 years, even before Alex started his electronic journey. The sojourn ventures deeper from there. Subaquatic dub techno is the mood on "King's Cave", "Helix", and "In Air" only surfacing ever so slightly for moments of clarity where shimmering tops and glistening synth lines shed some light on the steady grooves. The tracks "Future History" and "Transition State CIV" border on deep house territory. A punchy, gruff bass line and shaken percussion on the first adds suspense and energy, while the second quivers slowly with jungle-tainted toms and blips and squelches from machines. Laidback dub reggae is the tempo for "Last First Time" as well as "Ghost Button" and "R.U.G" where Alex is joined by his Berlin studio neighbors Haushausen. Seasoned musicians in their own right they jammed with him on these two tracks, delivering deft performances on drums, bass and guitar and adding yet another, more human dimension to the unfolding release. The feeling peaks becoming almost aerial on "Nervana" and "Self-Similarity", where quicker tempos, glitchy modular patterns dart along while seemingly eternal reverb tails and strings transcend space and time. Caves & Cages is an inter-dimensional hour of sound from the mind of Alex Krüger.

LANDING Bells In New Towns LP
LP version. Connecticut group Landing celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2018 but they show no signs of losing creative momentum. Bells In New Towns, their second album for El Paraiso Records, is arguably their finest, most cohesive effort to date. The group's sound has always been multi-textured, alluding to many different genres at once. There's the heavy oscillating drones and the fuzzy, motoric psychedelia, the lush ambient soundscapes and shimmering, dreamy vibes -- all tied together by that characteristic sense of fluid progression. On this record the ethereal components of their sound are firmly anchored by a tight, steady low-end -- certainly due to the fact that the album was partly recorded by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Elder, Pixies, Sonic Youth). The result is an electric music that speaks to the mind as well as the senses."Groups like Stars of the Lid and E.A.R. have wandered this same misty plane in search of the perfect drone, but Landing incorporates Bardo Pond's jam aesthetic into the journey, imparting a welcome communal feel to their lengthy, meandering compositions." --Pitchfork

Everland present a reissue of the Tutt Band's self-titled album, originally released in 1988. This is the only album from the Tutt Band known to ever be recorded. The ultra-rare and sought-after boogie-funk LP on Spoonful Records out of Phoenix, Arizona was released in 1988, but style-wise it sounds much more like being recorded in 1983 or 1984. It contains ten very solid and good tracks -- both club tunes and slow jams -- that all hit the required spot. There's also some treats for all Roger Troutman and vocoder lovers. Head straight to the ultra-dank tracks "Get It On" and "She's Got It Going". SNOOPY DEAN Wiggle That Thing CD
Everland present a reissue of Snoopy Dean's Wiggle That Thing, originally released in 1977. The late Nathaniel "Snoopy" Dean is one of those many underrated southern soul and blues men who never reached great fame outside their home ground. His legacy is deeply treasured though by hardcore black music followers. In the late sixties he instigated the now very sought-after group Third Guitar who recorded some great sides for the Rojac Records out of New York City. He subsequently became a member of the Deep City Band and started recording under his own name. In the early to mid-seventies Dean made five singles and an album Wiggle That Thing on Henry Stone's Blue Candle imprint which is being reissued here. The album -- originally released in 1977 -- contains a rare combination of deep, southern soul, funk, and blues in such a way that the LP really does not fall straight in neither category. In the '80s Snoopy Dean became a much in demand session musician as a guitarist in Miami and recorded at least two more albums that belong more in the blues and indie soul field. Unfortunately, Snoopy Dean died in 1998 due to complications arising from diabetes. He will always be remembered for his great album Wiggle That Thing.

GUNESH Gunesh (?????) CD
Everland Jazz present a reissue of Gunesh's ????? = Gunesh, originally released in 1980. The Gunesh Ensemble was founded in 1970 in Ashkhabad, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, then part of the Soviet Union. They started out as a vocal group with supporting musicians from Turkmenistan State Radio and TV. Later several young musicians came to play with them and the band's music became much more modern. The group began to play jazz-rock tightly intertwined with traditional Oriental music. With that new musical style, the band participated in some popular festivals around the Soviet Union. They received various awards and became very popular. Gunesh was always in the process of developing and they were one of the first and best local jazz-groups to organically combine the principles of jazz and melodic improvisation. The remarkably beautiful arrangements and polyrhythmic compositions were always further developed thematically. This process was highly praised at the Moscow competition With A Song On Life in 1977 where the ensemble became a prize-winner. The Organizing Committee of the Festival Spring Rhythms in Tbilisi (1980) named members Rishad Shafi the best drummer and Stanislav Morozov the best saxophonist. This album, their very fine first LP, was originally released in 1980 on the Soviet state label Melodyja and contains traditional Central Asian music in jazz-rock arrangements along with the appearance of a Vietnamese singer. The line-up has changed many times. Around 65 musicians have been a member of the group at some point in time.

PASCOAL & GRUPO VICE VERSA, HERMETO Viajando Com O Som: (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) LP
2018 repress; LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Hermeto Pascoal is a true maestro and a cultural icon. He represents the highest level of musical evolution; as a multi-instrumentalist, a composer, and an arranger. Once described by Miles Davis as "the most impressive musician in the world", there is good reason (beyond his Gandalf-like appearance) why he is known as "O Bruxo" ("the Wizard"). For Far Out Recordings' 200th release, the label present a previously unreleased album by Hermeto Pascoal and his Grupo Vice Versa: Viajando Com O Som, the lost '76 Vice Versa Studio Sessions. Recorded in two days in 1976, at Rogério Duprat's Vice Versa Studios in São Paulo, the sessions featured Hermeto's go-to "Paulista" rhythm section: Zé Eduardo Nazario (drums), Zeca Assumpção (bass), and Lelo Nazario (electric piano), as well as saxophonists Mauro Senise, Raul Mascarenhas, and Nivaldo Ornelas, guitarist Toninho Horta, and vocalist Aleuda Chaves. Hermeto decided he would record with this particular group following a show at Teatro Bandeirantes, during which an almost spiritual musical connection amongst the group was realized. The performance lasted for hours, without any breaks, and Hermeto saw the potential for his compositions to reach a "higher level" as the music organically moved from structured compositions to "freer" improvisational works. In the studio, the sound engineer Renato Viola understood that things needed to happen quickly. Almost everything recorded on the first take ended up staying in the final mix. After the mixdown, Lelo Nazario would ask Renato to make him a copy of all the material. Supposedly, the master tape was lost, but Lelo kept his copy in his studio's archives, where it stayed for over forty years. With the tape rescued and restored, this release fills a void in time. Recorded at an especially experimental period in Hermeto's career, it's a compelling insight into the incredible efforts of this group, who created a unique musical language which would have a profound influence on countless artists to come. The 1970s are considered a golden age of Brazilian music, but it's often forgotten how desperately hard it was for artists to get their music past the military dictatorship's censorship efforts. Yet in 1976, despite the often musically radical nature of Hermeto Pascoal's compositions, he was typically productive. The release of Viajando Com O Som re-writes the already remarkable story of one of the world's most supernaturally talented musicians.

BOCK, LOUISE Repetitives in Illocality LP
"Louise Bock is one of the performing names worn by Taralie Peterson of that most excellent duo, Spires That in the Sunset Rise. And the music on Repetitives in Illocality recalls a few aspects of Spires' recent live shows. It's akin to a dreamily aggressive take on the outer fringes of early ECM-style improvisation. A lovely hover between out-chamber-jazz, new music and the unknown tongue. Using cello, sax and treated lap harp, Louise Bock creates surfaces that are sometimes as chopped as ice sculptures made with a chainsaw, and at other moments as smooth as the soft expanse of Brian Eno's forehead. Those passages where the cello takes the lead are the most serious. Some passages, with their mournful sweep, almost sound like the slower parts of Kodály's 'Solo Cello Sonata.' The treated lap harp has resonance qualities not unlike a jaw harp at times, enabled to produce long tone lines, as well as to wobble like a jaw full of loose teeth. When Taralie's voice comes in, it can almost seem like Martin Rev is playing a solo on an old pushbutton phone while Judy Nylon blows clouds of aether into his wig. But the vocals combine with the sweet saw of cello in an entirely different way. Suggesting snippets of not-yet-discovered operettas about life elsewhere. Meanwhile, lap harp and sax appear to exist in a post-progressive universe where early '70s Gong may have actually had some serious moments. And this is some seriously amazing stuff -- solo, duos, trios and quartets drawn from the deep well of Louise Brock's imagination. Defy illocality. Come close and listen." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

JAY & THE GENERAL, TOMMY Florida Songs LP
"Tommy Jay and The General have been kicking around the Columbus scene (and various points on the map of that scene's diaspora) since the days of the True Believers (the ur-group in the history of Columbus underground hubbub). And this newly recorded album shows them to be at the height of their own amazing arc. Florida Songs is only Tommy's third proper LP under his own personal name and it's a killer. Recorded with help from a few old friends, including Nudge Squidfish, Florida Songs is a classic raunchy rock formulation by every known standard. Although the mood and tone shift mightily from song to song, the main thrust of the music here is brain-spattering ROCK of the pre-punk variety. Regardless of the fact these guys basically invented the template for several generations of punk>indie musicians, what they offer here is a survey of the roots of that music. You can hear shards of everything from the emotional bombast of Armand Schaubroeck Steals to Andy Zwerling's folk-rock readymades to the laid-back fury of the Stalk-Forrest Group to spurts of Roky Erickson phrase-howling at its gnarliest and onward and upward. These guys even throw in little production touches worthy of Bob Ezrin's work on Berlin. I shit you not. As anyone who's been lucky enough to catch Tommy's band live recently can tell you, Mr. Jay and cohorts are firing on all cylinders. And if this album is not hailed as a chunk of modern form genius at the apex of high, then all is fucking lost." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 250.

HUNDRED YEAR OLD MAN Breaching CD
Breaching is the debut album from Leeds-based, six-piece, post-metallers Hundred Year Old Man. Hot on the heels of their recent Rei EP (GZH 081EP), Breaching emits the same heaving intensity and unforgiving, wall of sound approach. Dense and billowing riffs are intertwined with field recordings and spoken-word passages to form an unyielding, sprawling piece of work that delivers the bands artistic vision perfectly. The more ambient, drone sections of the record compliment and allow the real songs to take flight. Debut single "Black Fire" is reworked to give the track a new lease of life, whilst the other heavy hitters here; "The Forest", "Long Wall", "Disconnect", and "Ascension" are a continuation of the excellent work found on the Rei EP. Breaching contains masses of atmosphere and is a ferocious and immersive listening experience. An epic, monolithic voyage full of texture, depth, aggression, and emotion. MALONE, KALI Cast Of Mind LP
Kali Malone's sophomore LP Cast of Mind investigates the use of harmony as a force of psychological impact through the exclusive use of the Buchla 200 synthesizer in combination with acoustic woodwind and brass instruments. The record begins as a cascade of battle calls from the wind instruments that shift between triumphant and anguished howls. While the other pieces pull from the septimal harmonic framework of the title track, they extract a more confined palette to depict their sonic identities indicated by the song titles. "Bondage To Formula" weaves synthesis, trombone, and bass clarinet in a delicate pattern, conjuring an ambiguous assimilation of the acoustic and synthetic. Dominated by columns of sawtooth waveforms, "Arched In Hysteria" unravels as a sharp and sober harmony perched on the border of violence, ringing in paranoia amongst a foundation of low beating oscillators. The record concludes in the rapture of "Empty The Belief", swollen with undulating bassoon striving to intonate to the towering stability of machine-generated harmony. 180 gram vinyl.

DISTANT ANIMALS Lines LP
Distant Animals is the artistic output of Daniel Alexander Hignell, a researcher and sound, video, and performance artist from England. He has recorded, written, performed, and researched numerous socially-oriented sound works across Europe, often choosing to work with a diverse range of collaborators, including visual artists, choreographers, theologians, lawyers, and political activists. Drawing upon the works of La Monte Young, Morton Feldman, Eleh, and Mauricio Kagel, Lines employs a highly conceptual approach to its genre, incorporating the notion of the drone as both a compositional method, a spiritual approach, and a participatory tool for engaging its audience. The album contains a pack of four postcards, documenting a land-art intervention undertaken during the creation of the score. Included in each pack is an individually hand-stamped and numbered print, created by artist Layla Tully. 180 gram vinyl.

BLACK RAINBOWS Pandaemonium CD
Black Rainbows are back two years from their last album, Stellar Prophecy (HPS 037CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2016) with a magnificent new full-length comprised of nine tracks for about 45 minutes of music. Pandaemonium has this mix of new wave of stoner-occult riffing a la Black Sabbath, but in a heavier way. Some of the songs remind of Fu Manchu but sound heavier than ever, and then you have one long doom-sludge-stoner suite ("Grindstone"), and a couple of lysergic, dreamy, heavy psych songs that will blow your mind. The album sounds killer and was recorded at Forward Studios, one of Italy's finest recording spaces. Produced by Gabriele Fiori and engineered by Fabio Sforza, with a special focus on the drums, handled for the first time in Black Rainbows by Filippo Ragazzoni. Bass riffing is solid and has a mellow sound, and the wall of fuzz from Fiori's guitars will drive you nuts. Artwork will be, for the third time for the band, from the visionary SoloMacello. This is the sixth studio album for the band, and by far the best one yet. It's the most solid and complete album they have ever recorded.

TROSS The Overview Effect LP
Tross have always had the ability to place the listener in a bubble of introspection and escapism, in the most positive way. The band members themselves rate the joys of discovery and not looking back, two of the leading factors in creating their sound -- no hesitation, no regression -- and this comes clear on their second full-length album, The Overview Effect. Captured on this album is the feeling of true presence created when musicians play together and not for themselves to prove their skills for each other and the listener. No show off -- just boogie! The band focuses more than before on rhythm. Here they have fallen deeper into disco and jungle funk, approaching the nerve of their live appearances clearer than on their previous records, creating dance music for spaced-out kids.

DEDEKIND CUT Tahoe Cassette
Northern California producer Fred Welton Warmsley III's solo work as Dedekind Cut has evolved from fractured industrial design into increasingly subdued and sublime ambient meditations across two years of dedicated activity. His second full-length collection Tahoe -- so named after the mountain lake town he now calls home -- swells with widescreen grandeur, evoking vistas both inner and outer. There are echoes of his earlier, more tempestuous mode in tracks like "MMXIX" and "Spiral" but overall the album skews panoramic and pensive, muted synthetic mists contoured with choral melody, field recordings, and radiant drone. His compositional instincts feel alternately classical, contemporary, and conflicted, befitting an artist whose discography spans divergent labels. Warmsley characterizes Tahoe as a "time peace", sifting through "the past, the present, future, and fantasy". Recorded in New York, Berlin, Cambridge, and Placer County, California. Includes cassette-only exclusive bonus track. Art by Micki Pellerano.

MOTTA PRESENTS, ED Too Slow to Disco Brasil CD
Too Slow to Disco take a dive into an often-overlooked side of Brazilian music: Brazilian soul, funk and AOR. The compiler of this Too Slow to Disco release, a giant of musical endeavor, is the young nephew of Brazil's legendary soul icon Tim Maia, the "Colossus of Rio", as he's known: Ed Motta. At the end of the 1980s, Ed Motta burst upon the music scene as a major singer and one of the writers and producers in the band Conexão Japeri. He's now fifteen albums into a career that hops from genre to genre, perhaps one of the savviest music makers and curators out there. He is a refined practitioner of jazz, funk, soul, AOR, and much else besides, having worked with everyone from Gilles Peterson to Roy Ayers, 4Hero, Seu Jorge, Patrice Rushen, Greg Phillinganes, Bo Diddley, Incognito, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and many other insanely talented musos. In this collector's compilation, you're coming on a kind of expert guided time travel mission -- just picture yourself following Ed's fingers as they trace along the sleeves in his massive library-sized vinyl vault. You'll dart back through over two decades of music making, dancing in one style then the next from soul to funk to AOR, you'll feel the air coming out of the horn section right the way through, and a mixologist's golden touch tying everything together. The artists Ed has play-listed for you include über-obscure figures like Carlos Bivar or Gelson Oliveira & Luiz Ewerling -- both of whose songs here derive from privately pressed albums -- so rare they're not even listed on Discogs! He's also gathered together a real pantheon of Brazilian musical heroes like Rita Lee (who was part of Os Mutantes), Cassiano (one of the founders of Bossa Trio and Os Diagonais), and million sellers like Roupa Nova, lovingly referred to as "the Brazilian Toto". And as ever with the Too Slow to Disco series, the artists might be new to you, but they're always bringing a killer tune. Also features Filó Machado, Sandra De Sá, Altay Veloso, Junior Mendes, Don Beto, Lucia Turnbull, Guilherme Arantes, Biafra, Santa Cruz, Jane Duboc, Carlinhos e Soninha Queiroz, Zeca Do Trombone, Kiko Zambianchi, and Brylho.

PAINKILLER Execution Ground 2LP
Repressed. The seminal 1994 double album Execution Ground, by the original Painkiller with the line-up of Bill Laswell, John Zorn and Mick Harris on vinyl for the first time. When Painkiller started in 1991, their first two albums Guts Of A Virgin (1991) and Buried Secrets (1992) (both released on extreme metal label Earache) were heavy attacks blending grindcore and free jazz that brought together the musical backgrounds of the three protagonists: drummer Mick Harris had just left grindcore legend Napalm Death, John Zorn explored new extremities with his Naked City project while Bill Laswell had as a member of roaring free jazz quartet Last Exit (with Peter Brötzmann, Sonny Sharrock, Ronald Shannon Jackson) proven that he was not only a visionary producer but also an accomplished bassist. But it is their 1994 double album Execution Ground remains the opus magnum of the brilliant trio: Zorn's unmistakable shrieking saxophone, Harris's pounding drums and Laswell's growling sub-bass lines were given heavy mixing desk treatment, resulting in extended tracks that are no less intense than their early works but display the full range of the musicians's skills. Avant-jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient melt into eerie tracks of haunting atmospheres - even more so in the "ambient" versions of the second disc. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M Berlin. Available here as a double 180 gram vinyl. Includes a download code and insert.

AROVANE + PORYA HATAM Organism & Organism_evolution 2CD
Two albums by the Berlin-based electronic musician Arovane and Porya Hatami, one of the main protagonists of the vivid Iranian electronic underground, on a special double CD: experimental, field recording-based ambient sounds with elements of electro-acoustic music and musique-concrète. Since his return from a nine-year long hibernation in 2013, the Berlin-based electronic artist Uwe Zahn, alias Arovane, has been more productive than ever and released a dozen of solo and collaborative albums. Porya Hatami, one of the main protagonists of the vivid Iranian electronic underground, released several albums on labels like Hibernate and introduced himself as a skilled experimental sound artist exploring the balance between electronics and environmental sounds. 2017's Organism was the duo's fourth collaboration. The 19 tracks, created using processed acoustic and electronic sources as well as field recordings, bring together the best of the two musicians: sophisticated electronic music of peaceful, even zen-like atmosphere with experimental twists. The brand-new Organism_evolution, as the title points out, develops further the aesthetics of Organism and reveals influences of musique-concrète and electro-acoustic music that place the tracks in a more experimental field. Using techniques like modular synthesis, granular synthesis, spectral processing, granular, resynthesis and resonator/modal synthesis, Arovane and Hatami used many different layers of processed sounds and field recordings to create depth and complexity -- with every new encounter, the listener will discover new sonic aspects and dive deeper into the multifaceted structures of the masterly sound-designed 23 compositions. Both albums, each a digital-only release originally, are bundled here as a limited edition two-CD in a special gatefold digisleeve. Mastered by Porya Hatami. Original artwork designed by Salah Ebrahimi.

VA Skinhead Hits The Town 1968-1969 CD
The skinhead sound grew from the music that was coming out of Jamaica around 1968 to 1971 and was adopted by the British youth. The music seemed tailor made for their sharp look and natty dress style, a style that was heavily influenced by the Jamaican rude boy look. The skinhead movement started around 1968 and by the following year it became the style fashion of English teenagers. The uniform consisted of boots, braces, and jeans and the upbeat sound of reggae seemed to match the style perfectly. The tempo of the music seemed to be picking up around 1966 to 1968 the rocksteady period, which was when the earlier ska sound slowed down. The sound system dances needed a slower bear to swing the night away to, some say to cater for the extreme heatwave that hit Jamaica around that time. Kingston Sounds have selected a bunch of tunes that would have provided a sound to those heady times, so sit back and enjoy some of the tunes the youths were listening to when the skinheads hit town. Features Derrick Morgan & Owen Grey, The Versatiles, Derrick & Patsy, Bunny Lee Allstars, Stranger Cole & Lester Sterling, Ronald Russell, Derrick Morgan, Lloyd Robinson, Young Freddie, The Termites, Eric Barnett, Dervon & The Tartans, and Max Romeo. TABOR RADOSTI Havamal CD
"Tábor Radosti is a fantastic band from the Czech Republic. Their debut album came out in 2001 as a self-released CDR that is now totally impossible to find. Tábor Radosti have created a very unique sound that includes drone, voice, samples, but also beats and analogue instruments. Their visuals and lyrics are very much centered around occult themes, if you have ever seen them live you will have been stunned. Klanggalerie is now very proud to start a re-issue program for the first two albums. Many of you have probably not heard of them before, but it is time that they gain popularity outside of their home country. The vocals are spoken in Czech - to Western European or American ears there is a certain similarity to early Laibach, they share the same roughness, but Tabor Radosti also include electronic beats which again is reminiscent of present day Laibach. On this re-issue, we bring back the second album Havamal with also updated artwork and some bonus tracks. NB: We at Klanggalerie stumbled across Tabor Radosti at Castle Festival in Moravia and were so impressed by their performance that we signed them immediately."

CRAB, SIMON Demand Full Automation CD
"Simon Crab has a long history in music. He is anti-capitalist, a practicing anarchist and strongly against material acquisition. Many years ago, he offered the complete back catalogue by his former band Bourbonese Qualk as free downloads. Nevertheless, people like product, so the Qualk catalogue will be-reissued physically, and Klanggalerie are happy to release his second solo album on compact disc. Crab considers himself a non-musician, yet is oddly quite good at playing instruments like the guitar, clarinet, gamelan-percussion and especially electronics. In fact, his favourite musical instrument is the computer. Whereas classically trained musicians often assert that there is no artistry in computers, Crab asserts there is no artistry required to play a musical instrument well. Crab's 'music career' spans nearly four decades and continues until this very day. Demand Full Automation presents our society's choice of either liberating the working class through automation, or further subduing them with it. Enter this rich, and meticulously crafted mostly electro-acoustic narrative with some instrumental excursions, that emphasizes more synthetic than natural textures, and on occasion, a sublime melding of the two. Demand Full Automation continues the narrative; ambient-atmospherically pensive some moments, but mostly energetic and upbeat, and relentlessly marching towards progress."

NEXDA Words & Numbers LP
Mannequin Records, Emotional Rescue, and Blowpipe come together to release the music of Dutch post-punk, industrial outsiders Nexda with a collection of music drawn from all their single and EP vinyl releases. Taken from two 12" EPs, a split 7", and a flexi 7", all released in 1982, the music within Word & Numbers captures striking compositions, part of, but in some way removed from their contemporary post-punk bands coming out of the Dutch "Ultra" scene of the time. Developing out of a series of concerts in Amsterdam, Ultra expanded to Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Haarlem, with artists and musicians creating their own work spaces and studios. Driven by the DIY mentality of the punk movement, this uniquely Dutch take on the post-punk ethos embraced avant-garde thinking and experimentation that disseminated in ideas and from that, sound. Coming from Haarlem, Nexda -- consisting of Ivo Schalkx, Karin Hueting, Martienden Nijs -- played music on handmade drums, metal, organ, saxophone, and voice. Releasing a series of cassettes on their and Wim Dekker's (Smalts, Minny Pops) Studio 12 label, the latter's link with Wally Van Middendorp's Plurex label, resulted in the release of Nexda's two EPs -- 246, 121 and 657 (1982) and Second (1982) -0 with artwork of Ivo Schalkx, are included here, both in their entirety. Capturing the band's heavy percussive backdrop, raw, dub baselines contrast with questioning, mainly spoken-word lyrical poetics, saxophone underplay and occasional Pablo-style melodica. The avant nature of the music is apparent and enticing, where experimentalism and artistic expression was sought over commercial success and technique and song form were less important than the process of exploring ideas. The none-descriptive titles match song structures that jettison the traditional verse-chorus-verse; weaving across the eight songs so that they can be heard as one, as much asshort bursts of individual statements. Graphic design rework by Alessandro Adriani. Mastered by Rude 66.

Nothing we'd heard previously coming out of the USA around that time could have quite prepared us for the sound of Lyres. You see, theirs was born of an altogether different mother strain. Yes, there were those groups that were part of the still-burgeoning scene that was beginning to happen, and yes, most other contenders that came our way at that time were also said to be heavily influenced by the wildly intoxicating sounds of the 1960s garage bands; but the majority weren't cut from the same raw and inspiring framework that Lyres were. Not the kind of group who deemed it more important to look like they stepped out of a Rolling Stones photo shoot circa '65, or could be bothered with parading any uniform look such as any of their own heroes, like say Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Kinks, or even The Wailers, presented back in the mid-'60s. Lyres were just gonna let the music do all the talking, and so for them jeans, tee-shirts, leather jackets and a pair of sneakers would do just fine. Producer Rick Harte's Ace Of Hearts label was already known for their attention to detail regarding presentation of sound and artwork, through releases by the likes of Mission Of Burma and Classic Ruins. They also issued a stunning 12" EP of the earlier Lyres, and pre-figured On Fyre with the release of a crackshot double-deck 45 with "Help You Ann" and "I Really Want You Right Now," both stone-cold killer tunes. On Fyre itself is a royal succession of unstoppably great selections, all with inventive use of major/minor chord switches, ear-bending tremolo gear, and/or relentless in-motion rhythmic sequences -- sometimes all at once. Home base for Lyres, nearly always, has been Boston, Massachusetts, where the majority of the group's early personnel had already experienced a pretty strong taste of group life, having played a major part in one of the foremost punk-era outfits the city had earlier thrown up; they were, of course, the legendary DMZ. Both DMZ and Lyres were spearheaded by lead vocalist, organ/piano player and tambourine-basher extraordinaire, Jeff Conolly, whose own individual performances have a direct lineage that can be traced back to the unbridled abandonment displayed by none more so than the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis. That the raw sonic exultation captured throughout On Fyre was unleashed almost 30 years ago now is quite an astonishing, terrifying statistic given that, it's a record that still sounds as fresh, bold, new and exciting as it did back in 1984." --Munster Records

JOHANNSSON, JOHANN The Theory of Everything 2LP
Transparent blue vinyl; 180 gram vinyl; Gatefold sleeve; Edition of 1500 (numbered)."The score for The Theory of Everything is created by the recently deceased (9 February 2018) Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. Jóhannsson's intricate compositions provide a stunning backdrop to the romantic drama about Stephen and Jane Hawking, portrayed in the film by Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables) and Felicity Jones (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). He has composed music for many films including scoring director Denis Villeneuvue's film Prisoners and Josh C. Waller's McCanick. The Theory of Everything is the extraordinary and uplifting story of one of the world's greatest minds, the recently deceased astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, and of two people defying the steepest of odds through love. The film, based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen by Jane Hawking, is directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh (Man on Wire). The film gathered various awards and nominations following its release, ranging from recognition of the film itself to Redmayne and Jones' acting performances, McCarten's screenplay and Jóhann Jóhannsson's score. At the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, Redmayne won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama accolade and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson won for the Best Original Score. Jóhann has released several solo albums and has written commissioned works for contemporary ensembles such as Bang On A Can and Theatre of Voices, collaborating with different artists. Amongst them Barry Adamson; Finnish electro band Pan Sonic, Marc Almond, The Hafler Trio, the nom de musique of English avant garde composer Andrew M. DJ RAPH Sacred Groves CD
DJ Raph is an electronic musician, producer, and DJ from Nairobi, Kenya. He is an outstanding figure in the growing Kenyan underground electronic scene. His debut album Sacred Groves is a rare gem of a record; considered, emotional, and contagious. DJ Raph builds rich, textured electronic music from pan-African ethnographic field recordings. Sacred Groves opens up a timeless musical universe, that is both ancient and futuristic; a deep mélange of modern electronic bass music, African chants, and traditional rhythms. This is essential dance music. It is fundamentally not kitsch or clichéd. What makes DJ Raph's approach unique within the abundant production of African electronic music is a keen interest in the meanings and contexts of the original field recordings. Sacred Groves emerges from weeks of research in the extensive music archive of the Iwalewahaus (Bayreuth). The music, rhythms, and chants which he builds from are not just to expand his sound palette; his work is a considered homage to the traditions which he borrows from. The archive is revered rather not researched. The respect that DJ Raph, a Nairobi-based producer, has for a broad African cultural heritage is deeply visceral and palpable in this music. Long samples allow the field recordings to breathe, to open up an innovative and vital electronic soundscape. Sacred Groves is simultaneously traditional, contemporary, and deeply sacred. All music was produced by Raphael Kariuki in Nairobi, Kenya and Bayreuth, Germany. All ethnographic recordings used on this record are part of the UNESCO World Heritage with friendly support of Klassik Center, Kassel. Additional mixing by Hannes Teichmann. Mastered by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering, Berlin.

BEN, JORGE Tropical LP
Repressed; LP version. "One of Brazil's greatest songwriters, Jorge Ben rarely dwelled on any particular musical style, even the ones he helped create. By the mid 1970s, Ben had already innovated several groundbreaking new twists on the classic samba sound, in the process creating many tunes that became epoch-defining hits for South America's biggest country -- not to mention the world at large. For 1977's Tropical, he made the controversial decision to rework an album's worth of his most beloved songs in the new, disco and funk influenced Afro-Samba style he was exploring at the time. As a result, classics like 'Chove Chuva,' 'Taj Mahal,' and 'Mas Que Nada' get polished updates, alongside deeper rarities like 'Georgia'and 'Jesus de Praga,' making Tropical a sensual, sultry counterpoint to other Jorge Ben collections."

SSLEEPING DESIRESS Ssleeping Desiress LP
2018 repress, in May. While the band has gone through a few lineup changes, Ssleeping Desiress has essentially remained the brainchild of San Francisco-based Gabriel Ramos, who is the sole member on this, the band's debut album. Following the great 2012 A Voice/Sister 7", this album runs along the boundaries between minimal synth, coldwave, and electro with lyrical themes of gentrification, coping with death, artistic drive and confusion, and the ephemeral nature of relationships. Ssleeping Desiress have appeared on numerous new new wave compilations since 2011, but this album takes the project to the next level, kicking off with an echoing voice over repetitive drums and outbursts of synths and guitars before slowly moving toward a more darkwave sound on the second half of the album. Ramos started making solo recordings while living in Portland, Oregon, around 2005. The DIY drive of the city and the live shows that he hosted at his house, often of friends' bands from San Francisco, led to a growing fascination and voracious consumption of music. Ramos recalls, "I can really trace it to the first time Spector Protector played at my house and getting a tape afterwards from one of the two members, Eric Davis. That and being freshly exposed to groups like Suicide and Arthur Russell was very inspirational to begin recording music on my own, though it is something I had done fairly aimlessly since high school. I make an effort and try and change my process as much as I can (usually through collaboration) and vary the instrumentation. I try and incorporate a late '70s punk vibe, a marriage of dub and krautrock repetition and cavernous space. Definitely not always successful but that is what is usually running through my head when I create music for this band." Mastered by Michael Romanowski. Graphic design by Luis Mendoza.

VA Dutch Wave: A History Of Minimal Synth & Wave In The Netherlands LP
The first chapter of Onderstroom digging into the history of Dutch minimal synth and wave. Who needs a big, expensive recording studio with all those fancy high-tech machines that only make your weary head spin when you can do it all by yourself at home in your (teenage) bedroom? Way back in the early eighties all you really needed was an idea, quite a bit of guts and some rudimentary equipment. You could basically do whatever you wanted. The means were limited, yet the sky was unbounded. It was the time of the Cold War nuclear threat, social unrest and mass unemployment but at the same time it was an era of infinite possibilities. The future was just around the corner. A lot of music that was being produced sounded just like that: a brave new world of sound and rhythm. Music was simply put on cheap cassettes, easily duplicated, and swiftly distributed in limited quantities into the big world outside. Tracks recorded in Amsterdam, Arnhem of Heiloo ended up in unimaginable destinations such as Brisbane or Buenos Aires. Prolific international underground scenes were informed of this new wave of Dutch electronic artists by means of word of mouth, fanzines, devoted underground tape traders, and sometimes that tiny bit of luck. As their predecessors of the (in)famous Dutch East-India Company (now cult) acts such as The Actor, Ende Shneafliet, Das Ding, Störung, S.M. Nurse, Nine Circles, Beatnik Love Affair, and Van Kaye + Ignit all explored their own paths. Some went straight into oblivion, others had a brief taste of modest upper-ground success. Mind: the names presented here are but the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Some of these early tapes became much sought-after collectors' items; others gathered dust. The rest, well, is history. Now, decades upon decades later, Onderstroom digs again in history and surfaces with a selection of tracks that illustrate the rich past of electronic Holland. Call it minimal wave, synth-pop, or experimental electronics. Onderstroom call it the real Dutch treat. Features Nine Circles, Beatnik Love Affair, The Actor, Störung, Van Kaye + Ignit, S.M. Nurse, Ende Shneafliet, and Das Ding. Comes in a gatefold sleeve with metallic finishing; 180 gram vinyl.

MOORE, G.T. The Harry J Sessions CD
In 1980 Gerald Moore -- of G.T. Moore And The Reggae Guitars and Heron fame -- was in Kingston, Jamaica working with Lee Perry on the Return Of Pipecock Jackxon LP. Gerald went into Harry J's studio with James Lascelles (Global Village Trucking Company, The Breakfast Band) and Bud Beadle (Ginger Baker & Salt) alongside members of Zap Pow: Don Grant, Cornell Marshall, and Dwight Pinkney. Of the four tracks recorded, only "Utopia" was ever released (on the Black Star Liner label in 1980 and then reissued by Partial Records in 2014). The tapes sat around gathering dust for the best part of 40 years and are now finally unearthed. "Jerusalem", "Working For The Dollar", and "Constant Spring" were mixed directly from the masters by Dougie Wardrop. Also "Utopia" is freshly mixed here. Four cuts followed by their respective dub mixes. CD comes in digipack with vinyl-look CD.

J DILLA Ruff Draft: Dilla's Mix 2CD
"When Ruff Draft saw its initial release in 2003, J Dilla possessed production skills on par with anyone in hip-hop -- technically and creatively. 'At the top of his game,' says longtime friend and collaborator, Karriem Riggins. After years of building while modestly deferring to others of both greater and lesser notoriety, Dilla finally completed the first solo endeavor on his own label, entirely on his own terms. The significance of such an autonomous success often gets overlooked, and partly accounts for why Ruff Draft is one of the lesser-referenced entries in Dilla's oeuvre. 'It's a mysterious little project,' says his mother, Maureen Yancey. 'But out of his entire career, that was the happiest time.' Prior to recording the EP, Dilla found himself at a crossroads. Estranged from his label, MCA, and separated from the mother of his youngest daughter, frustration abounded both personally and professionally. Dilla spent parts of 2002 and 2003 working on an album for MCA that featured his rapping over contributions from other producers with whom he had connected and whose music he respected. At the time, he was known primarily for his beats, yet reviled for his MCing by most anyone not from his hometown of Detroit. The project was to be an intentional freak of the industry. The project would go on to spur his collaborative album with Madlib, Jaylib, and would first showcase the template that he would take to his greatest heights with 2006's Donuts. The Stones Throw reissue of Ruff Draft from 2008 featured remixes of the songs from the album, done without Dilla's involvement. This version of the album takes Dilla's recently discovered mixes of the album and restores his vision for the project. 'Straight from the mothafuckin' cassette,' as he phrased the sound he was going for on the EP's intro. The CD issue is buttressed by unreleased tracks and includes the music from the EP as it was originally released, the alternate version that Dilla had for the project and complete instrumentals. Author Ronnie Reese expands upon his original liner notes to further tell Dilla's story, in a booklet complete with never before published photographs from the Ruff Draft photo session. This CD issue features first Dilla's original sequence of the EP and then presents Dilla's alternate sequence, with tracks unreleased in 2003, as well as instrumentals. Author Ronnie Reese expansively details Dilla's trajectory at this crucial point in his career, in a booklet complete with never before published photographs from the Ruff Draft photo session."

TANAKA, FUMIYA You Find the Key 3x12"
2018 repress; Triple-12" version. The long awaited full-length Perlon debut of Fumiya Tanaka. "Easily Japan's most talented and knowledgeable techno DJ, Fumiya Tanaka brought the sound of minimal, intense techno to Japan during the early '90s, and introduced thousands of club-goers to the best Detroit and German producers via his club nights around Osaka and Tokyo. Born in Kyoto, Tanaka listened to and played in punk bands as a teen, then entered the dance scene in 1990 via house, techno, and hip-hop. He began DJing soon after, and formed Japan's first electronic dance label, Torema Records, in 1993 for his own stripped-down productions. By 1995, Fumiya Tanaka released his first mix album, I Am Not a DJ, on Torema, which by then had gained major distribution through Sony. Later that year, he set up Untitled Records, who paved the way for more experimental techno via the compilation Abstract Set 1. Soon he was spinning around the world -- often in the company of DJ heroes Jeff Mills, Derrick May, and Dave Clarke -- and not long after, the European techno cognoscenti realized that Tanaka wasn't just one of the best DJs in Japan, but around the world." --AllMusic

WILLIAMS, MURPHY She Is My Woman CD
PMG present a reissue of Murphy Williams's She Is My Woman, originally released in 1981. "She Is My Woman is Murphy William's loose, funky and spontaneous call to the dance floor. It's an infectious collection of good-time tunes that the band seem to be enjoying as much as the listener. Williams was a stalwart of the Nigerian music scene, joining Godwin Omabuwa's Cassanova Dandies at 17 before becoming one of the two lead vocalists of The Apostles from Aba. He was famous for his distinctive four-octave voice, a voice that legendary label boss, Godwin Tabansi decided was perfectly suited to the new disco sound that was gripping Nigeria. The title track gets the party started with Felix Liberty providing the good-time guitar riffs, Friday Pozzo on congas and Sonny Enang keeping it light on keyboards. The vibe is tight and bright, breathy a breezy charm into disc-tied versions of Igbo folk songs "Selense" and "Ima Obi O". The undoubted highlight of the album is "Get On Up", a certifiable disco classic that would slay any dancefloor anywhere in the world. It's funky, it's fun and by the time the lyrics implore the listener to get on up and dance their feet have already been convinced by the music. Put it on and it's guaranteed to get any party started." --Peter Moore

LYRICS BORN Later That Day... CD
"A crucial founding member of the Northern Cali-birthed Solesides / Quannum collective -- which included DJ Shadow and Blackalicious, among others -- and one half of the groundbreaking Latyrx duo (with Lateef The Truthspeaker), Lyrics Born opened a lot of ears and minds with his 2003 solo debut, Later That Day... On this very open-minded and chiefly self-produced long player, Lyrics Born and his crew (including Joyo Velarde, on vocals; guitarist Tommy Guerrero and Germany's funk masters Poets of Rhythm) bring it from the funk side, boasting a warm soul stew instead of colder drum machine-based beats and chopped samples. As shown since his earliest days, the incredibly versatile Lyrics Born mixes his flow up depending on the track, from tongue-twistingly fast to conversationally mundane, and concepts are usually at the forefront -- 'Cold Call' is an amusing take on telemarketers, featuring Gift of Gab; 'Before And After' is about friends growing apart; 'Bad Dreams' is a groovy apocalyptic shaker. The infectious 'Callin' Out' rides the party train and 'Stop Complaining' timeshares between funny and serious. 'Do That There' features DJ Cut Chemist with liquid cuts that work around LB's verbal floor routine. And even after all of the other musical fireworks, the album's crescendo most assuredly comes on track eleven, 'The Last Trumpet': operatically dramatic and powerful, with Lyrics Born and Latyrx-mate Lateef trading verses like 'the only action / we can profit from / is movement towards / the positive / progressive thought / that's rooted up / in consciousness' at breakneck pace."

ERIKSEN TRIO WITH ANDY SHEPPARD, ESPEN Perfectly Unhappy LP+CD
LP version, includes CD. Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and released their first album in 2010. Their music relies on highly melodic and lyrical instrumentals and a "less is more" approach and is often credited for its unique voice within today's jazz scene by the international press. The aptly named Perfectly Unhappy features eight new songs by the pianist, all written with this collaboration in mind. These are enchanting and lyrical tunes, often melancholic and uplifting at the same time and will surely speak to followers of both the trio and Sheppard and attract many new ones. With a career spanning over four decades, working together with the likes of George Russell and Gil Evans, Andy Sheppard is truly one of Europe's leading saxophonists. Lately, his main focus has been with his own quartet and the trio with living legends Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, both acts recording for ECM.Andy Sheppard on the recording: "I knew from the first time I heard the trio play that I would fit right in. I loved the melodic sense and vibe and was thrilled when I was invited to guest with the trio in London in 2016. Since then we've had a chance to grow the music with tours in Korea and Norway, before Espen wrote a set of fantastic tunes for the recording session in Oslo. They played themselves and we had a ball recording, everything clicked and in two days we had made a very special album."

SAINT BALLANTINE All Saint's Day CD
Before coming together to form Saint Ballantine, Brooklyn-based duo Andrew Thomas Reid and Brian "Sene" Marc were busy pushing creative boundaries on their own. As one half of Denitia & Sene, Brian notably caught the attention of Rolling Stone with the group's lilting electro-soul and striking style. Andrew, an artist, creative director, producer, and visionary with a penchant for branding, helped to materialize a communal incubator for young artists in Brooklyn called the Clubhouse (aka ClubCasa). The production duo prides itself on blending aspects of various genres in both their musical elements and lyrical content. Dark and meaningful concepts are often encased in intricate downtempo jams, making each Saint Ballantine track worth exploring. Both musicians specialize in mixing numerous influences and shared priorities, but the music is never harsh or restrictive. "Although Saint Ballantine has sharp sonic opinions, it's really accessible to a lot of people and I think that's important," says Reid. He and Marc successfully touch on complex situations as well as lighter universal topics, allowing virtually anyone the chance to connect with the group. Hollis Wear, who previously appeared on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "White Walls" with memorable results, is the lone feature on a cross-cut album of minimal neo-soul, R&B, and indie pop, with millennial takes on folk and psych. All Saint's Day celebrates the moody and ethereal, its layered soundscapes as much a sharp, angular pop record as one that stays poised, watching in the wings as an outsider. The humanized synthetics are sure to catch the ears of fans of The Weeknd, H.E.R., Frank Ocean, Porches, and Børns.

ELECTRONIC MODULAR ORCHESTRA Electronic Modular Orchestra 2LP
Electronic Modular Orchestra: from Neil Young to Stravinsky. Curiosity is the element that allowed the birth of this project. Gabriele Bombardini, Nicola Peruch, Matteo Scaioli, and Max Vicinelli are musicians who have decades of experience in all fields of music. The desire to combine seemingly distant sounds such as the use of old analog synthesizers, a pedal steel that recalls the American folk tradition, and the modular synthesis that leads back to the so-called concrete musical research, was the challenge to face. Freedom of expression, contemporary quotations, improvisation, Stravinsky, Bartok, Reich, psychedelic rock, jazz, all that is musical emotion is taken as a stimulus for this research."Sound is made from the same matter of dreams that, as the sun rises, evaporate and leave a feeling of uncertainty. Just as when in proximity of a secret that will not be completely solved and won't allow you to retrace the succession of emotions that brought you to it. Instead we must learn to hold on to them, cultivate them, be able to understand and recognize them. To trust them. Sound, its colour, the essence of its tone, the vibrations that it leaves in the air. None of these can be described in words: the necessity to physically listen is ineffable. We can write a melody, a rhythm, a harmonically complex structure, an arrangement... But never the colour and taste of sound. In Electronic Modular Orchestra's music you will find certain harmonies, melodies, rhythms, sounds and layerings of every kind. All of these spring from the sound that gives it life and most profound meaning. It is for this reason that listening to this work requires an intimate complicity from the listener to be able to appreciate the essence of the tale that the artists wished to create. Perceiving the 'voice' even before form and other structural and musical elements that we are accustomed to recognize. There is no use to dwell on single tracks. Everyone will find his own personal vision and the road to their own emotions. The influences of this music are numerous: precise and restless geometries, celestial shades, the metaphysical, chaos, energetic sounds, cutting sounds, unpredictability and scrape. Listen to this disk on a good sound system, so not to frustrate the musician's intent. Take the necessary time to listen, and re-listen." --Franco Ranieri

PETERS, MARK Innerland CD
Innerland is the first ever solo album by Engineers co-founder/songwriter and Ulrich Schnauss collaborator, Mark Peters. It was originally released as a low-key limited-edition cassette late in 2017, but it sold out immediately through word of mouth and the backing of BBC Radio 6 Music's Lauren Laverne and Gideon Coe, Uncut magazine, and Caught By The River. It has now been re-landscaped into a larger-scale, eight-track album. A collection of instrumentals, with nods to Brian Eno, Talk Talk, Richard Thompson, Vini Reilly, and Felt's Maurice Deebank, Innerland highlights Mark's incredible musicianship, positioning his guitar rather than his voice as the focal point of the music. It also finds him reconnecting with his youth and rediscovering a sense of place, following a move back home to northwest England in late 2016, with all the songs named after local places and landmarks.

HARRIS AND THE POWERHOUSE FIVE, DAVE Dinner Music For A Pack Of Hungry Cannibals LP
Sonitron Records present a reissue of Dave Harris And The Powerhouse Five's Dinner Music For A Pack Of Hungry Cannibals, originally released in 1961. Recorded in 1958, Dave Harris's only release as a band leader was a magnificent tribute to Raymond Scott, the legendary forerunner of space sound and author of many classics referenced by jazz to pop/rock musicians and engraved in millions of minds through their use in countless cartoons and movies during the years. Harris was a highly considered studio musician and played tenor sax in Scott's legendary Quintette during the late 1930s. During his stance in the Quintette, Harris developed a deep respect for Scott and learned from the master a few compositional techniques: wild changes in rhythm, accelerations in tempo, exotic references, and thundering percussion to name a few. Those wild elements, plus Harris's own skills as band leader and the consummated and playful musicianship of his sidemen, make this album a whirlwind of sensations in which Harris and his quintet glow with energy, joy and sharp craftsmanship while adapting the master's legendary tunes to a modern, hi-fi style. All through the 12 themes that compose the album, Dave Harris And The Powerhouse Five make the listener part of a joyful trip in which Scott's "portraits in music" come back to life filled with a new manic energy, a playful spirit and an undeniable love for Scott's repertoire that doesn't stop the musicians from giving the tunes their own, fun-fueled-spin. Long out of print, it's time for this space-age-gem and it's amazing cover art to be released again. Edition of 300.

SPACEMEN 3 Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To CD
Space Age present a reissue of Spacemen 3's Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To, originally released in 1990. Re-release, digitally re-mastered featuring Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce. The original appearance of Taking Drugs was a bootleg on the legendary/notorious Father Yod imprint in 1990, later supplemented with contemporary outtakes and cuts for the Bomp reissue in 1994 and one further song for the Space Age version in 2000. The original seven tracks, dated January 1986 and the first recordings to feature Pete Bain on bass, are collectively known as the Northampton Demos. Both Sonic and Pierce have been on record as long preferring these takes to the eventual versions that surfaced for the most part on "Sound Of Confusion". Certainly it's a fine set of performances, showing a definite step toward the more familiar sound of the group and away from the rougher takes on 1995's For All The Fucked Up Children Of The World (ORBIT 039CD). "The Sound Of Confusion", aka "Walkin' With Jesus", rips along with fierce energy, Pierce's singing and the rampaging, primitive wail and rumble of the band just wonderful. "Losing Touch With My Mind" takes things to an even higher level, a huge wallop of feedback and beat (Natty Brooker's drumming in particular delivers just what the doctor ordered), Pierce delivering the lines with a flat, cutting drawl. On the slightly lighter tip, "Come Down Easy" is more or less fully in place (aside from singing about it being 1986!), possessing a more upfront but less vocally distinct feel than The Perfect Prescription (1987) take. The tracks that surfaced on the later reissues come from a variety of different sessions, including the original take on "Feel So Good" and a good live version of "Things'll Never Be The Same", one of several cuts featuring Brooker's drumming replacement Rosco.

PABLO'S EYE Spring Break 12"
Pablo's Eye is the science of studio pressure, when engineer becomes artist. Appropriating left and right as well as front and back, Pablo's Eye uses the mixing desk to examine and exhaust the possibilities of moments. Pablo's Eye is a record of that examination and exhaustion, but it is also a record of its own inner space. By means of depth placement, psychoacoustics and spatial fug, Pablo's Eye is experienced in the deeper reaches of the body, bypassing the conscious part of the mind entirely. Pablo's Eye is the turning of recorded music inside out to show its seams. It interrogates a song, stripping down the body of the song to reveal its bones. Pablo's Eye is in the interstices of music, it plugs the gaps, fills the holes. Pablo's Eye seeks out the concealed mechanisms, it is a song's hidden agenda. For this compilation, it was decided to present the softer air-beatings of Pablo's Eye. More than anything, Pablo's Eye is a temporary atmosphere, like a taste or a dream...

SINGER & JEF GILSON, HAL Soul Of Africa LP
Super-Sonic Jazz present a reissue of Hal Singer and Jef Gilson's Soul Of Africa, originally released in 1974. Considered one of the most important Afro-Parisian jazz records of the '70s, Soul Of Africa sees Texas tenor sax giant Hal Singer team up with French pianist Jef Gilson, and his Afrocentric, big jazz band. Originally released in 1974 on legendary French imprint French Le Chant Du Monde, and reissued in 2008 on Dutch imprint Kindred Spirits, Super-Sonic Jazz Records provides yet another opportunity to get ahold of this driving, testament to spiritual, ethno-jazz. Full of rhythmic modal jazz, Soul Of Africa plays off the talents of Singer and Gilson with great panache, all the while supported by the sublime percussive talents of Gilson's finely directed band. During the '60s, Gilson was equal to the likes of Miles Davis, and was responsible for unearthing the talent Henri Texier, one of jazz's unrivaled, brilliant bass players. His music spanned various modes of jazz, and was recognized primarily for his Malagasy works, inspired by his trips to Madagascar. Contemporary music fans will be familiar with his work, after a recent Four Tet project sampled, remixed, and compiled a selection of his work. Hal "Cornbread" Singer who, in his long career, played alongside Duke Ellington, Roy Eldridge, Billie Holiday, and far more, was a Mercury Records' legend whose work with rhythm and blues, and jazz is unparalleled. Originally reissued by Dutchman Kees Heus, aka KC The Funkaholic, on his soulful, and eclectic imprint Kindred Spirits, this is another chance to get ahold of the classic release through his latest adventure, Super-Sonic Jazz. Running a parallel event at Amsterdam's Paradiso club, Super-Sonic Jazz sets out to push the boundaries of music, through bringing together eclectic, and global rhythmic luminaries, with more contemporary, genre-agnostic musical forms. Comes in a heavyweight tip-on sleeve.

PALM UNIT Hommage A Jef Gilson 2LP
Double LP version. Back in the day, French pianist, composer and all-round jazz superstar Jean-François Quiévreux, aka Jef Gilson, was up there alongside the likes of peers John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, and Sun Ra. In a fitting homage to the decades-worth of sublime music, and his sad passing away in 2012, French quarter Palm Unit present a lively, honest tribute, upbeat, and contemporary re-interpretative vision of his legacy. Gilson has been noted for changing the face of bebop with free-jazz and Afro. Along the way, his big band featured the likes of Lloyd Miler, Bill Coleman, Michel Portal, and others. With his own recording studio and label Palm Records, Gilson released music from greats including Byard Lancaster, David S. Ware, François Jeanneau, and more. He also helped embed a more ethno style to the world of jazz, inspired by his visits to Madagascar, which resulted in the famous Malagasy jazz albums. Palm Unit, a wildly eclectic super-group of jazz greats, includes uKanDanZ's saxophonist Lionel Martin, keyboardist Fred Escoffier from Le Sacre du Tympan, drummer Philippe 'Pipon' Garcia whose mostly known from his worth with the Erik Truffaz Quartet, and special guest Del Rabenja -- who played alongside Gilson in Malagasy -- on the Madagascar valiha harp. Palm Unit plays Gilson's repertoire without any a priori, in a totally complex-free manner, reinventing it whilst preserving its original essence. The keyboards sound almost psychedelic (and often not that far from the style of Eddy Louiss on Jef Gilson's '60s albums), the sax scratches, mews, and wails, whilst the drums make the whole thing swing. Even Del Rabenja was surprised to rediscover the songs still sounding so modern, decades after they were created.

WILSON, GREG Credit To the Edit Volume Three CD
Legendary DJ, remixer, and edit exponent Greg Wilson is back with the third instalment of his Credit To the Edit series. Almost a decade on from Volume 2 (2005), Credit To the Edit Volume Three draws on music from the disco and rave eras, adding a seminal hip hop cut, a Balearic favorite, as well a few contemporary tracks from the last ten years. Working with Technics turntables, a Revox reel-to-reel tape machine, and a razor blade, Greg carved out his reputation as a UK pioneer and champion of electro-funk. Whereas, more recently, following his 2003 comeback after a two-decade hiatus, he's gained international renown at the vanguard of a now global re-edits movement. "This album mainly consists of straight up old-style edits, where I've worked with the stereo tracks, extending, re-arranging and sometimes overdubbing. There are also some reworks/remixes where I've had the stems at my disposal and been able to bring into play additional instrumentation, courtesy of remix partner Peza on a couple of the tracks -- 2016's 'Hold On' by Luxxury featuring The Reynolds plus the futuristic '70s disco hit, 'Magic Fly' by Space." Kicking off with DJ Mike Pickering's T-Coy project, the loose-limbed Latinate shuffle "Carino" is very much a cult classic. Greg's instrumental edit of Todd Terje's edit of "Glad To Know You", 37 years on from the Chaz Jankel original, has been a big club and festival favorite, and is made available here for the first time, while Escort make their second Credit To the Edit appearance with Greg's remix of their 2010 release, "Cocaine Blues". The near-pornographic funk classic "Jungle Fever", recorded by Chakachas, a group of Belgian-based studio musicians, is a playful mixture of Latin music, jazz, and European-style exotica and the Fab 5 Freddy & Beside's "Change The Beat" is a hip-hop landmark. His 2009 edit of one of the all-time rave classics, "Is There Anybody Out There?", recorded by Bassheads, is always guaranteed to bring the roof down, whilst he makes a more DJ friendly version of Sheila & B.Devotion's "Spacer", placing the emphasis on the Chic-driven backing. More recent favorites come courtesy of Psychemagik with Navid Izadi on "Mink and Shoes", Red Rack'em, and closer "Getting Away With It", a hidden classic of the Madchester-era recorded in 1989 by Bernard Sumner (New Order) and Johnny Marr (The Smiths) as Electronic (complete with Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant).

ETERNAL CHORD, THE Semper Liber CD
Semper Liber consists of a series of duets featuring Marcus Davidson, Hildur Gudnadottir, Mike Harding, Charles Matthews, Clare M Singer, Maia Urstad, and Anna von Hausswolff and are drawn from recordings made at Spire events since 2009. Mixed by its curator, Mike Harding, at the Völlhaus, and mastered by Mark Van Hoen, this powerful four track collection -- to be played as one piece -- explores the sonics of the mighty organ in all its thundering glory. Warning!: Extremely low frequencies (bass) may cause distortion on headphones/computer speakers! Performed on the 1893 Schlag & Söhne organ at Johanneskirken, Bergen; the 1967 Karl Ludwig Schuke organ at Passionskirche, Berlin; the Peter Bares organ, inaugurated in 2004, at Kunststation St Peter, Cologne; the 1885 "Father" Henry Willis organ at Lincoln Cathedral; the 1877 "Father" Henry Willis organ at Union Chapel, London; the Rieger organ at St. Stephan's Church, Mautern & the 1897 Johnson & Son organ at St. Saviour's Anglican Church, Riga between 2009 and 2016. The four colour plates by the art historian and author Sydney Russell show cave art from four-to-six thousand years ago. Taken in Brazil on one of several expeditions she made around the world, these highly emotional works reveal the sophistication and ageless quality of the imagination of the peoples who were expressing themselves at this time; they have been slow to reveal their beauty to us, having survived all weathers; their acoustic soundtrack unfolds slowly, submersive and involving. Sydney Russell writes: "These photographs were taken in 1976 in Brazil. We eventually obtained minimum radio carbon datings for levels covering the paintings from approximately 3750-2500 BCE. They originate from the rock shelter sites of Sucupira, (Lagoa Santa) and Lapa do Cipo (Santana do Riacho), near Minas Gerais and Quadrillas (Montalvania), Bahia. Please refer to the website for more information." Photography by Sydney Russell. Artwork by Philip Marshall. Mixed at the Völlhaus; Mastered by Mark Van Hoen.

LOS SUPREMOS Atiza Y Ataja LP
"Discos Fuentes featured many great vocalists and composers in the realm of Colombian tropical music during the golden era of the 1960s and 1970s. One of the most talented and perhaps tragic figures of the 1970s salsa and cumbia boom in Colombia associated with Fuentes was Edulfamid Molina Díaz, aka Piper Pimienta, whose life was ended by a bullet from an anonymous assassin in 1998. . . . After coming to the attention of producer José María Fuentes in Medellín in 1970, [El Combo Monterrey ] was boastfully renamed El Gran Combo Los Supremos and signed for a one album deal, recording Atiza Y Ataja ('Push and Pull') in April of 1971. Grounded firmly in the Cuban style of La Sonora Matancera, with a prominent piano and crisp trumpet sound augmented by an additional double sax, Los Supremos were also influenced by the NYC salsa dura and bugalú of Willie Colón, while also managing to include coastal Colombian tropical music like cumbia and currulao, throwing in some improvised descarga jamming as well, making for a varied and hard-edged mix for one of Discos Fuentes' first, and finest, forays into making salsa records. . . . The frenetically paced title opener is a largely improvised descarga guaguancó (jam session in the guaguancó rhythm). . . . The next tunes, a paseaíto (short and fast paseo, akin to a cumbia) and a cumbia proper . . . These are followed by 'El Mico' ('The Monkey'), a great example of Colombian 'salsa dura' . . . The side closes out with another bouncy cumbia with Scoot (Pedro Botina Guevara, aka 'Peter Scoot') on lead vocals and featuring the growling and whinnying equine trumpet of 'Don Fabio' Espinosa. Side two kicks off with the most obvious homage to what was happening at Fania Records in New York City with the cumbelé titled 'Hacha Y Machete'. Next up is the funky Cuban-style guajira (mixed with son montuno) 'Sin Solución', with vocals shared by Pimienta and Scoot . . . That's followed by 'Guaguancó Supremo' in an upbeat descarga style, a party jam that was also popular in the dance halls and radio airwaves of Cali and Buenaventura. . . . The record ends with what is perhaps the most experimental tune in the whole repertoire, mixing funky Latin soul/boogaloo with guaguancó . . . " --Pablo Yglesias, aka DJ Bongohead

PIETROPAOLI WIRE TRIO, ENZO Woodstock Reloaded CD
March 2018: the release of Enzo Pietropaoli's latest album Woodstock Reloaded represents, in a contemporary perspective, some of the most significant pages of the pivotal and epic moment which took place in August 1969 representing the peak of hippie culture, not exclusively related to its musical significance. Woodstock Reloaded wasn't conceived to be a "cover" but an original re-reading, an "update" of the reverberating impact and a reminder of those emotions, animating memories and encompassing the milestones that followed as it approaches through time. This is a tribute to the festival and a narration of the turning points and evolution of musical language from that moment to present day. The iconic artists included represent, according to Pietropaoli, the highlights of those days and the most significant performances, not only in terms of music but also of their impact on the cultural movement, on the clothing, and ideology -- transcending borders. Among these are: Santana, The Who, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly And The Family Stone, and Jimi Hendrix.

POLONIO Bload Stations - Syntax Error LP
Vinilisssimo present a reissue of Polonio's Bload Stations * Syntax Error, originally released in 1987. Eduardo Polonio has been one of the key names of Spanish music since the late 1960s, especially as a pioneer in the field of electroacoustic music. He was a member, with Luis de Pablo and Horacio Vaggione, of Grupo Alea Electrónica Libre (1970-1972), the first Spanish group of live electronic music; and he was one of the main figures of Barcelona's Laboratorio Phonos since 1976. He was also a founding member and president, between 1988 and 1994, of Spain's Electroacoustic Music Association. In 1994 he received the Magisterium award at the Grand Prix International de Musique Électroacoustique in Bourges, France. He is responsible for an absolutely personal body of work, without any kind of stylistic debts, which has often gone beyond the recording tape in order to establish a dialogue with physical space and other artistic creations, as testified by his numerous collaborations with sculptors, video artists, painters, experimental cinema directors, stage designers, and his own work in the field of installation art. Following Vinilissimo's reissue of Polonio's 1984 LP Acaricia la Manana (MRSSS 037LP), the label present (with Geometrik Records) Bload Stations * Syntax Error, his second solo album. It includes ten tracks composed between 1977 and 1985 and recorded at Laboratorio Phonos, Estudiomar, and Laboratorio Alea using the Minimoog, Polymoog, EMS Synthi AKS synthesizers, and the Yamaha CX5MII computer. The tracks were later mixed at the legendary Gabinete de Música Electroacústica de Cuenca. The album was conceived as a sort of suite made up of mainly short music pieces from imaginary places. It begins with a hypnotic drone number, the longest track on the entire album, just over eight minutes of wonderful guitar arpeggios played by Jose Manuel Berenguer. As the album progresses, the dreamy atmospheres and surrounding environments point out the stops of the sound trip crafted by Polonio. Occasionally, the looped passages need no more than two minutes to draw an instant as hypnotic as attractive, and the sensations that the sounds generate wander between restlessness and pleasure. Syntax Error is an astounding work that will give the listener a new perspective of the Spanish musical avant-garde in those years. An essential pieces of Spanish electronic music. MILITO, OSMAR E Deixa O Relogio Andar! LP
Vinilisssimo present the first vinyl reissue of Osmar Milito's debut album, ...E Deixa O Relógio Andar!, originally released on Som Livre in 1971. During the 90s, a walk around London's Camden Market inevitably meant listening to the music with groove that the most popular DJs had made fashionable at the time: soul jazz instrumentals and Brazilian music targeting the club dancefloors. Among all those songs that ended up becoming classics of the scene was the amazing cover version of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" that Osmar Milito had recorded in 1971. This song was probably the main reason that made his LP for Som Livre one of the most sought after Brazilian records by collectors from all over the world. Along with the aforementioned version of Herbie Hancock's song, this first album by piano player and arranger Osmar Milito is full of versions of Brazilian classics, from Marcos Valle to Jorge Ben or Ivan Lins. Fierce samba jazz and bossa all the way through! Note that Milito spent the first years of his career as a member of the backing band of big artists such as Elis Regina, Jorge Ben, Nara Leão... and after two years working with Sergio Mendes in the United States, he returned to Brazil and recorded his first LP. The line-up of performing artists on this album could hardly be more impressive: Quarteto Forma on the vocals, Luis Eça, Marcos Valle, Pascoal Meirelles (an amazing drummer)... and both sides of the record hide a seamless sequence of solid tune after solid tune with similar doses of instrumental and vocal tracks. Just listen to the magnificent "Garra", "Que Bandeira", or "Rita Jeep", or the sweet samba that gives its name to the record, and you will see why this LP should be up there, next to the best works of Arthur Verocai and Marcos Valle. (1962), Two For The Road (1967), Wait Until Dark (1967), Peter Gunn (1967), and of course, 1961's Breakfast At Tiffany's which alone won five Grammys and two Oscars. The Breakfast At Tiffany's soundtrack is probably best remembered for Audrey Hepburn's legendary performance of Mancini's "Moon River" (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), which won an Academy Award for Best Song that year. Though the legendary blues musician Robert Johnson was only known to have recorded twice in his brief lifetime, in 1936 and 1937 in Texas, his output in those two brief days so long ago was both endlessly influential and surprisingly prolific. Beyond the classic sides that were released on 78 rpm at the time, there were numerous unreleased outtakes and alternate recordings that went uncovered for decades after their recording. Collected here are 12 alternate takes including essentials like "Crossroad Blues", "Drunken Hearted Man", "Ramblin' On My Mind", and more. Essential and rare Robert Johnson sides back in print on Wax Love.
