VA Desafinado! Spanish Bossa Nova (1963-1975) LP
Mid last century: Commercial music is a machine that generates dances that run each other over in the urge to reach the audiences and mark their place in time and history. A never-ending list of choreographies co-habit: hully gully, madison, rock, limbo, twist, and a long etcetera, until a new dance, bossa nova takes over the dancefloors. Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, or Vinicius de Moraes reach stardom in Brazil with this mix of samba and jazz, but the genre doesn't explode internationally until a few American jazzmen decide to import it. From there it reaches Europe, via France, thanks to Sacha Distel, the first on the continent to record an EP completely dedicated to this phenomenon. It is 1962: Shortly after in Spain, the number of artists including original or adapted tracks in their albums, escalate: Tony Vilaplana, Mina, Duo Dinámico, Latin Combo, Los 4 Brujos, Gina Baró, Grau Carol, Salomé, or Marisol, who popularizes the new trend by recording Marisol rumbo a Río (1963), a blockbuster film partially filmed in Brazil. The maestro Augusto Algueró writes the film's soundtrack. For this compilation, Adarce Records have consciously dug into the archives of three Barcelona based labels like Belter, Discophon, and Olympo to serve Spanish-sung bossa nova songs that have never, inexplicably, been released on vinyl, all songs are recorded during those two (musically speaking) prodigious decades: the twentieth century's '60s and '70s. Features Paula, Salomé, Cocky Mazzetti, Elsa Baeza, La Nueva Generación, Bruno Lomas, Seison Show, Antonio González, Antonio Prieto, Los 3 Sudamericanos, Los Aguacates, Hermanas Benítez, Los Millonarios, and Richard Y Sus Bambucos.

T.E.S.O. Construzione 04 LP
After a period of hibernation, Aperture awakens with a bang and a compelling program in the pipeline. Following their first album released on Aperture at the tail end of 2015 with No.3 Obliate (AP 008LP), the Italian duo T.e.s.o. present their second full-length album Costruzione 04. As the title suggests, the album centers around an underlying theme of construction, inspired by radical architecture, brutalism, and collages from Superstudio. The concept and title evolved from the nature of the album and the process of building up tracks from a number of separate samples, much like the singular elemental materials used to assemble a structure. Alongside their music production, the duo has previously created a multimedia installation that investigated the geometric studies of Le Corbusier in parallel to the musical production of Erik Saite and Matteo Castiglioni continues to create impressive audiovisual installations such as the recent "Freddo Flusso" and "neon(i)", as well as a collaboration with Danilo Randazzo. T.e.s.o. also continue to perform absorbing live sets of their own inimitable range of musical perspective and vision. Intense, visual, and structured, Costruzione 04 again showcases T.e.s.o.'s complex, obscure, and dominant beats and their oblique and sometimes challenging style.

RHYW ARCS-06 12"
Rhyw is Alex Tsiridis, aka one half of Cassegrain. On this, his solo debut for Arcing Seas, his smoldering, alien techno sound manifesto continues to thrive over three unique tracks. The morphing, deconstructed acid of "Unpunishable" -- a molten statement of lusty intent -- strikes first in a heady, hazy pummeling of doom-funk. "Vertisol" pushes crisp and dry snaking percussion through an anechoic chamber; the bass end neatly warming at first then burning hard through your mid-section. An icy cold shot of "Aqua Velva" is the final offering -- a pushing sub-level trip through Rhyw's private domain.

H4L Four Lights EP 12"
From H4L's sci-fi passion, the title track's power structure couldn't be wielded more efficiently: Stomping kick drums and subtle hi-hats build up a foreplay full of suspense. Following a similar approach, "Fesch" employs a bouncy and mantra-like groove and ping-ponging synths. Deep'a & Biri, the Israeli DJ and producer duo from Tel Aviv, offer an interpretation of "Four Lights". The remix redirects the original's energy into more hypnotic realms and creates a moody and dense version. "Disc 2 Dysnomia" finishes the release with an IDM-drenched workout, full of UK bass knowledge, unpolished electro grooves, and swirling synth poetry.

CARTER/WILLIAM PARKER/MATTHEW SHIPP, DANIEL Seraphic Light (Live At Tufts University) CD
"Seraphic Light was recorded live in the performance hall of Tufts University (Boston) in April 2017. These three masters each possess a complete & total devotion to the music. On this very rare trio meeting they manifest a meditative resonance, replete with lyrical exploration, throughout a sublime set. The concert was part of an event entitled 'Art, Race, and Politics in America.' First was a screening of the 1959 documentary film, The Cry of Jazz. The film asserts 'jazz is the Negro's cry of joy and suffering' and 'the Negro is [white America's] conscience...if they have a conscience.' These bold and timely ideas pushed forward the second portion of the program, a discussion / Q&A with Carter, Parker, and Shipp. For 45 free-flowing minutes, these three men spoke truths, told stories, floated ideas, countered assertions, listened to questions, gave advice, told jokes, and laughed together. Having already established an honest and direct bond with the audience, they then seamlessly shifted their discussion to the musical dialogue presented here. While William Parker and Matthew Shipp are each deservedly world-renowned as players-improvisers-composers due to their extensive recording and performance work as leaders, Daniel Carter remains an underground figure on the world stage; even relatively so within New York City where he has been ceaselessly active since the mid-70s. He is a masterful player of deep lyricism and passion; in possession of gorgeous tone across a full range of wind instruments. Seraphic Light showcases Carter on all of these instruments and in a characteristic style in which his melodies prod and ply, concurrently asserting and suggesting. As he has recently entered his 7th decade of non-stop creation, it is hoped that this recording -- in the company of well-esteemed peers -- will go some measure to increase recognition of the gifts he has long offered."

ANMLPLNET Fall Asleep CD
"Nobody is more surprised about having created a full ANMLPLNET album than the group itself: Slothrust leader Leah Wellbaum and drummer / singer Mickey Vershbow. The two met while they were both immersed in the Boston music scene, and then went on to pursue separate musical careers on opposite coasts. Their debut album Fall Asleep truly displays their magnetic musical bond, even while withstanding physical distance and hectic schedules. The band was formed originally on a number of rules, including writing lyrics that are antonymic translations (meaning nouns, adjectives and verbs were replaced with their antonyms) and playing songs straight through as one giant piece, no breaks. The band seeks to create dream-like soundscapes, both epochal in scope and melodic. Their goal is to explore the space between songwriting and improvisation, and the result is an uncontrived melding of their personal styles and technical mastery of their instruments. Wellbaum and Vershbow basically plan, dig, then embark on a fresh road towards rock brilliance."

CONNAN MOCKASIN Forever Dolphin Love LP
2018 repress; now on 180 gram vinyl. LP version of Forever Dolphin Love with bonus download code for the live version. Connan Mockasin has the kind of deliciously off-kilter and gloriously idiosyncratic worldview that rapidly proves addictive. Welcome, folks, to the delightful, slanted and enchanted world of Connan Mockasin. Like David Lynch's willfully surrealist take on American suburbia, or Richard Prince's paintings investigating modern cultural tropes, the New Zealand-born, current London resident Mockasin makes beautiful music which subverts as it compels, challenges as it mesmerizes, startles as it seduces, even drawing fans as diverse as Johnny Marr and Radiohead to Ed Banger chief and ex-Daft Punk manager Pedro Winter into its wide-eyed, childlike exploration into the final frontiers of pop music. It is all too rare, in this current climate of manufactured pop acts, grey, over-produced "alternative" guitar music and press-fuelled mania for the next-big-thing, to hear something truly striking and original, but a strong case can most certainly be made for Connan to be a true pop auteur, taking his rightful place in a proud lineage which includes past mavericks such as Joe Meek and Brian Wilson, right through to current cult heroes like Ariel Pink, Sufjan Stevens and John Maus. Written from start to finish one hot summer, while camped outside his parent's church-like house in a tent, Forever Dolphin Love is an LP which brims with the beauty and solitude of summer evenings, a miasma of psychedelic tangents, jazz interludes and echoing guitars which hum with a distant, haunting resonance. For apart from being one of the most singular musicians we currently have, he is also a brilliant and unusual painter, a gift which will be glimpsed for the first time with this album, which features a collection of wonderfully surreal paintings of dolphins, all bold and beautiful interpretations of the mammal, but evolved into human forms, smiling in gaggles, sometimes wearing clothes, sometimes swathed in pools of lush colors. Connan's talents also include recording, producing and mixing the entire record. It was this brilliantly ingenious approach to invention, and his masterfully unique charm that caught the attention of Erol Alkan, who signed Connan to his label Phantasy and released his first output Please Turn Me Into The Snat.

SHACKS, THE The Shacks (Bonus Tracks) CD
"With the release of the group's all new full-length Haze Big Crown now takes you back to where The Shacks story started with the reissue of the group's self-titled EP which includes 'This Strange Effect' as featured in Apple's global iPhone 8 commercial! When you listen to the Shacks' self-titled debut EP, you might imagine that Shannon Wise and Max Shrager are much older than their respective 18 and 20 years. But when Shannon's whisper-vocals breeze through the speakers, you hear the youthfulness of their sound which then in turn explains the fearlessness of their songwriting. Both vaguely familiar and completely fresh, The Shacks are one of the most interesting NYC bands to surface in a minute. Since the release of their first single, 'Strange Boy,' which they recorded with El Michels Affair, The Shacks have been compared to 90's indie icons like Mazzy Star, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Broadcast. As good as those bands are, you wouldn't find a single one of their records in Max and Shannon's music collection. All these bands are drinking from the same well, just 20 years apart. Highlights from The Shacks EP include a cover of the Ray Davies-penned 'Strange Effect,' which Shannon sings as if it were written for her, giving the song an unnerving edge that's way more interesting than Dave Berry's tepid original. Also included on the EP is 'Orchids,' one of Leon Michels and Max Shrager's first co-productions, recorded at the legendary Diamond Mine studios. 'Orchids' is a truly original piece of music that showcases The Shacks' adventurousness in the studio. 'Left It With the Moon' is a lo-fi lullaby written by Shannon and recorded to 4 track cassette at Max's home studio in Princeton, NJ. And 'Hands In Your Pockets' features the Frightnrs rhythm section laying down a pitch-perfect rocksteady backing track behind Shannon's deadpan delivery a la Jane Birkin." Includes bonus tracks.

CHE-SHIZU A Journey 2LP
Black Editions present the first ever vinyl release of Ché-SHIZU's signature album A Journey, originally issued in 1994 by Tokyo's legendary P.S.F. Records. Ché-SHIZU is one of the most original and mystifying groups to ever emerge from the Tokyo underground. Founded by master improviser Chie Mukai in 1981 the group has been guided by her singular vision for nearly 40 years. Throughout its history Ché-SHIZU has challenged traditional notions of song structure and improvisation. Mukai's signature instrument, the Chinese er-hu, is an ancient two stringed bowed instrument rarely found outside of traditional music. Even within the wildly diverse roster of artists on P.S.F. Records, Ché-SHIZU is a playful and confounding outlier. Early on Mukai became active within the avant-garde movement flowering in Tokyo during the mid-1970s. She studied with renowned Fluxus composer and violinist Takehisa Kosugi, recalling, "that encounter was so huge for me, much more than any one technique. Even in terms of the er-hu, I only started playing it because Kosugi gave it to me." In 1975 she joined his East Bionic Symphonia, a large improvising ensemble featuring students from Tokyo's Bigakko art school. From there she contributed to improvising avant-garde groups including an early version of Marginal Consort and later the Vedda Music Workshop. Her work with Ché-SHIZU however is where her vision most clearly emerged. Ché-SHIZU released its first album I Can't Promise in 1984 on Zero Records, in time the album would become a revered classic. It would be another ten years before another full-length would be released. During that time the group performed extensively with various rotating line ups. In the summer of 1994, Mukai led the group to Studio J in Tokyo to record an album for the P.S.F. label. Released later that year, the album was titled A Journey. Fittingly, it is a sprawling excursion through ethereal dreamscapes, the group confident in its own resplendent joy. Over the album, the group creates a spontaneous, loose form of chamber pop that weaves folk and a light psychedelia into something entirely unique. Pop songs like "Juso Station" intersect with instrumentals such as the title track to create a varied yet coherent improvisational language. Remastered; deluxe double-LP edition cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin and pressed at Pallas Germany. Includes new expansive artwork and lyric translations, housed in a spot gloss heavy gatefold jacket; Includes high resolution digital download.

MAMITRI YULITH EMPRESS YONAGUNISAN Yulith Lilith 2LP
Tom Lax on Mamitri Yulith Empress Yonagunisan's Yulith Lilith: "The world of Mamitori is as beguiling as it is unchartered. Their, just previous to this, live album Mamitori Ulithi Empress Yonaguni San-25/12/20/13 (also on Bruit Direct Disques) fizzled the ears of pine-tops with its staggeringly great execution of outsider ramble gnashing with no wave rumble, creating a sound so unique, scribes stuttered on hiccups of comparison. Trying to 'get it right'. If copies still exist, plonk down some cabbage and see what I mean. So when the check writers at Bruit said they were issuing forth a 2LP of new material, all one could do was wait and wonder. It's the line in the sand many dare not cross. The double LP format, in its purest distillation, exists as the medium to convey realizations of the most sprawling and unconventional design. And by God, if Mamitri Yulith Empress Yonagunisan latest deuce, Yulith Lilith, doesn't ding all the right dongs, then ladies and gentlemen, I will cook your goose. The heart of their sound is beyond words, it's more chaos theory, transmuting inside the eye of a hurricane. Imagine 10,000 blackbirds, perched in the trees above Tompkins Square Park, their shrill natter suffocating the air, while below Arto Lindsay spanges in tap shoes, his voice wavering fugue-like over the birds, while the clicking of his gait keeps a rhythm out of sync-yet completely on point-with the overall scheme. Or if '70s era Faust had become outlaws, exiled themselves deep inside the Hokkaido landscape and for the rest of eternity tooled around Akkeshi Bay on speedboats, lustily consuming wild ales, sustaining themselves solely on plankton and oysters. Mamitri Yulith Empress Yonagunisan are Bushido code Circuit Rider and Yulith Lilith is an unimpeachable masterpiece extolling the marauding valor of a band incapable of succumbing to convention. Housed inside transparent screen-printed sleeves-resembling alien x-rays. It's like the future just opened up. And guess what? It's full of stars. One of my top picks of 2018 by a mile. Not to be missed." Double gatefold album; clear vinyl with a custom made transparent sleeve; two quadri stickers; plastic insert; all hand made in Japan.

CLUSTER Cluster 71 LP
2018 repress; 140-gram LP. Cluster's self-titled debut was originally released by Philips in 1971; this edition is the first reissue to restore the track running order of the original Philips release. Includes liner notes by electronic avant-garde pioneer Asmus Tietchens. In 1998, The Wire listed Cluster's self-titled debut as one of "100 Records That Set The World On Fire (When No One Was Listening)." Very few albums from Germany can lay claim to this honor. Cluster is a monster; it contains a mere three untitled tracks and was quite an ordeal for untrained ears when it was released. Yet the album pointed the way forward like no other electronic opus. Cluster's previous incarnation was a trio called Kluster. A change in direction and musical differences moved Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius to split from the group's third member, Conrad Schnitzler, in 1970. The following year, in addition to playing live, they recorded their first album in publisher Ralf Arnie's Star Musik Studio in Hamburg. Here they first met Conny Plank, who would himself become a legend. They remained close friends until Plank's death in 1987. Early Cluster music was new. New in the sense that it did not continue any tradition, instead laying the foundations for a future tradition. The duo's utter renunciation of conventional harmony and rhythm, embrace of near total aural abstraction, and confident use of noise, rigorous live electronic improvisation, and a positive mindset were all factors in Cluster's innovative trailblazing of 1971. For want of a better category, Cluster was classified rather inappropriately and incorrectly as "cosmic." Few recognized Cluster for what it was -- a synthesis of pop music, stripped of embarrassing glamor, and so-called serious music without intellectual constraints. Moebius and Roedelius took the liberty of raiding both disciplines to perfect their musical concept. A common enough practice today, but akin to a palace revolution in 1971. So it is that three pieces of electronic music meander and pulsate through Cluster, with no beginning and no end. Cluster's music is free and open in all directions. There are sounds, noises, and structures to be heard on this album that would become ingrained in the electronic pop music of the 1980s and 1990s. Cluster had taken the first step into the future.

"God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be is something of a rarity in the Sun Ra catalog -- a cohesive album with none of the stylistic eclecticism and musical chair shifting many of the artist's self-released LPs were known for. Recorded at Variety Studios one day in 1979, the album's five tracks comprise a solid jazz trio set. God Is More Than Love... is the only complete piano-bass-drums studio session in the massive Sun Ra catalog. The album offers an intense set of cosmic vagabond moods, reflecting the telepathy that is the essence of small combo jazz. Other than an overdubbed second piano on 'Days Of Happiness' the five works were spontaneously generated and forever fixed: none of the titles recur in the encyclopedic Ra discography. Originally released on Saturn in several small press runs under the alternate title 'Days Of Happiness' between 1979 and 1981, fully realized artwork was never established and the album never got much circulation, thus it has remained a largely overlooked session in the Ra omniverse. Nearly 40 years later, the record is long overdue for acclaim on its second time around. Newly remastered edition on CD and LP (with tip-on style jackets/ RTI vinyl)"

Hell, they fit more energy and incident into a 4-bar phrase than your average minimal-monkey manages in a career. The bolshy, brutal rhythm and sandpapery coarseness of the sound design around it is matched with a deft sense of spatial arrangement and emphasis -- not since the days of Mark Stewart + The Maffia have barely suppressed violence and and a trippy, dubwise sensibility worked so naturally and effectively together." --FACT, "The Essential... TRICCA, EMMA St Peter LP
LP version. In life and music, Emma Tricca is an explorer. Just as ?Davey Graham set sail for Morocco and ?Vashti Bunyan for the Outer Hebrides in search of their elusive ?muse, Rome-raised singer-songwriter Tricca has journeyed to London, New York, Texas, and further afield to seek the heart of her own music. Tricca's new album St Peter -- created with a cast of supporting artists including global icon ?Judy Collins, ?Sonic Youth's ?Steve Shelley, and Dream Syndicate guitarist Jason Victor -- takes a bracing plunge into the unknown, leaving the folksinger tag far behind with a rolling collection of reverie-inducing raw diamonds. Tricca released her first melancholic masterpiece, 2009's crystalline long-player Minor White on Bird Records (BMS 024CD), an offshoot of Finders Keepers run by husband and wife team ?Jane Weaver and ?Andy Votel. Five years later Tricca released Relic (2014), an album even more poised and precise than its predecessor. A collaboration with longtime friend and guitar wizard Jason McNiff led to 2017's sparkling Southern Star EP (EDDA 043CD/LP), while a song on the soundtrack of Patrick Stewart-starring US indie film Match (2014) raised her profile. Recorded near-live at Echo Canyon West in Hoboken, St Peter draws on crunchy country rock, homespun psychedelia, Morricone soundtracks, New York underground grit, and English folk grandeur to weave a wholly unique and surprising spell. More musical guests soon joined the party -- gruff songwriting hero ?Howe Gelb put in a brief cameo, while Tricca was able to live out a childhood fantasy by inviting ?Judy Collins to appear on the album's penultimate cut, "Solomon Said". The album is so loaded with texture that is almost feels tangible; a rare record that feels precise and pristine in its executions but never sterile or lifeless. Electric guitars fizz away like a controlled electricity, Tricca's guitar playing flows gracefully at the core with her vocals existing in the perfect state between slight rasp and caramel-smoothness. Shelley's drumming and percussion gives a steady heartbeat to the record which is further brought to life by a variety of deft instrumentation, including piano, bass, cello, violin, glockenspiel, and of course the variety of guest backing vocalists. Whilst St Peter's deep-seated roots can perhaps be traced to traditional folk music, its finished existence feels far from such a thing -- its ever-flowing essence skipping through genres, tones, paces and rhythms with a gliding grace.

SURGEON Luminosity Device 2LP
Double LP version. Includes download code. Surgeon's new full-length, Luminosity Device, takes Bardo Thödol -- the Tibetan Book of the Dead -- as a starting point for a rhythmic journey into those interstitial spaces where body, mind, and soul no longer seem like distinct categories. It has the potential to turn anything from a club visit to a train commute into a collision with the otherworldly. Since the 1990s, Anthony Child has been one of the most consistent and pivotal electronic music producers to use that craft as a tool for achieving transcendence. Under his aptly chosen DJing and production alias Surgeon, his technical precision and clarity of creative vision have resulted in a highly influential form of techno-mesmerism documented in exhaustive live sets and incisive studio recordings. His talent for wielding beats and sonic textures as healing technologies and as magical weapons simultaneously, and particularly for excelling in "long-form" treatments, has made him not only a key contributor to the legacies of touchstone labels Tresor and Downwards, but also a prized collaborator (his British Murder Boys duo with Regis has capitalized on both producers' natural intensity to devastating effect). The pure techno idiom has never been his sole method of exploring the vastness of inner space, or of illustrating the interaction of thought and memory with the external environment: the work published under his own name, e.g. the two-volume set Electronic Recordings From Maui Jungle (EMEGO 215CD/LP, EMEGO 230CD/LP), along with newer collaborations like the Transcendence Orchestra with Daniel Bean (EMEGO 246LP), have shown Child to have a masterful knowledge of the intimate qualities of drone and atmospheric sound: the sound-scaping talent utilized in these projects is capable of drawing out acute emotional reactions from a broad spectrum of listeners.

MOGARD, ABUL Circular Forms LP
2018 repress. Abul Mogard presents his debut LP, a suite of four analog synth pieces. Mogard was born in Belgrade, Serbia, and spent most of his life working in a metal factory, only beginning to approach music after his retirement. Following two highly regarded cassette releases on Steve Moore and Anthony Paterra's VCO label and a series of compilations and split releases, Mogard makes a surprising departure on this debut album for Ecstatic Recordings. Circular Forms channels a wealth of soulful modular explorations and shadowy white-noise clouds. The end result is evocative, unsettling, and beguiling modern synth music. There's a real emotive essence to his almost lyrical arrangements that is very much removed from the contemporary modular revival. Composed and recorded in solitude using a limited equipment array of Farfisa organs in conjunction with a self-built modular synthesizer, the album's intoxicating distortions and extreme low frequencies translate into personal space and beautifully restrained impressions. Abul Mogard: "Lately I have been reading and appreciating visual art and paintings and this has informed my work on this album. Compared to my previous albums, this was the first time that I had a clear visual representation of my music, as geometrical forms -- each element of a track suggested a form that intertwined with the other elements."

MOGARD, ABUL Works 2LP
2018 repress. Ecstatic offer a deeply arresting and definitive collection of Works by erstwhile Serbian factory worker-turned-synthesist Abul Mogard; containing selections from two cassettes released in 2012 and 2013 on Steve Moore and Anthony Paterra's VCO Recordings, as well as a cassette only release on Ecstatic, never before available on vinyl. Abul Mogard's relatively unusual path to releasing music is well documented, but bears repeating here. Upon taking retirement from a job at a factory which he held for decades, Mogard craved the mechanical noise and complex harmonics of the industrial workplace, and found that the best way to fulfil that need was through electronic music - using a limited set-up of Farfisa organs, voices, samplers and a self-built modular system to realize a peaceful yet haunting, sweetly coruscating sound that resonates uncommonly with music from Leyland Kirby to Alessandro Cortini, or Fennesz and Tim Hecker. The nine tracks on Works are soused in an emotional richness that's hard to forget once experienced. Broad daubs of distorted bass and naturally glorious harmonic progressions paint panoramas of wide open, grey-scaled skies whilst equally conveying the intimate feel of a person with their nose to the machine, toiling for a sound or feeling that really means something to them, and by turns, us. The fact that Mogard hails from an area hardly well-known for its synth music, and that he's of an age where most people take up gardening or lawn bowls, rather than synth music, only helps to aid the enigma and magic surrounding this remarkable artist and his layered, emotional music. RIYL: Alessandro Cortini, The Caretaker, Fennesz, Tangerine Dream, Brain Eno, Tim Hecker.

MAC ERLAINE, SEAN Music For Empty Ears LP
Seán Mac Erlaine's richly-textured woodwind sound meets an expanded palette on Music For Empty Ears, the Irish musician's breathtaking new album. Having honed his distinctively-shaped soliloquies over his first two solo records, Mac Erlaine's work now bears the mark of collaborations with Norwegian luminaries Jan Bang and Eivind Aarset to reveal a fresh, variegated musical language. The album journeys through a splendor of musical shades: from the gently insistent minimal grooves and hushed invocations of tracks such as "The Melting Song"; to slow pans across dark, saturated vistas on tracks such as "Winter Flat Map"; to a warm, celebratory treatment of the Irish traditional tune "An Buachaill Caol Dubh"; and to moments of visceral, splintered abstraction in "Love The Way They Sing" and "The Alchemist III". Whether it's the elusive vocals of Galway singer Sadhbh Ní Dhálaigh or Mac Erlaine's sublime clarinet melodies that catch you, Music For Empty Ears is an album that reveals more and more with each listen. SPICE 1 Spice 1 LP
"Spice 1 is an undisputed West Coast legend, who first hit the scene after the N.W.A. and -- closer to home -- Too $hort explosion of the late '80s. As history showed, he continued that bloodline with finesse and authority. His nasal flow is menacing and strong, and fans have been consistently captivated by his 'hood tales since his self-titled debut in 1992. If you want thematic range with your MCs, Spice isn't that dude -- he is all about crime tales and the perils of ghetto life. And he attacks that storytelling sweet spot with each new cut. Spice 1 boasted four singles by the time it was all said and done, and breezed to Gold status on the strength of cuts like the catchy 'East Bay Gangster'; the heartfelt tales and truths of 'Welcome To The Ghetto'; and the thick, grooving 'In My Neighborhood.' He even produced the alcohol-themed '187 Proof,' another of the album's singles, and the hands-down cleverest vocal outing on the LP. Sonically, the backdrops on Spice 1 range from plunky, keyboard-bassline funk to deeper, fuzzy '70s samples -- and he sounds strong on top of both. "Break Yourself" is fueled with an electro-funk drive; '1-800 Spice' brings reggae flavor; and 'Peace To My Nine' gets chunkier, with a well-placed P-Funk 'One Nation Under A Groove' sample. Presented here on official retail vinyl for the first time since its initial release 26 years ago, Spice 1's debut holds the test of time and carries the California gangsta flag with pride. Some colors just don't fade."

KNUCKLES, FRANKIE Baby Wants To Ride/Your Love 7"
"By the time the Jungle Brothers rapped about it in 1988, House music had been bumping in NYC clubs for years. Even though the genre would go on to become a global phenomenon, House music had humble beginnings in predominantly gay and black clubs in Chicago. Musically, House music was inspired by the eclectic dance records played by DJs Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy at clubs like 'The Warehouse' and 'Muzik Box'. With a growing club scene, labels like Trax Records and DJ International played a major role in the development of the genre. Founded in 1984, Trax was an important outlet for house music in its early days, releasing many classics including 'No Way Back' by Adonis, Larry Heard's 'Can You Feel It,' and the first so-called house anthem in 1986, 'Move Your Body' by Marshall Jefferson. This latter tune gave a massive boost to house music, extending recognition of the genre outside of Chicago. The story behind the making of these recordings, is quite peculiar. 'Your Love' was written Jamie Principle, young Chicago Native with a strict religious family who grew up listening to the likes of pop, gospel, classic and RnB. A talented musician, Principle could play the clarinet and keyboards as well as drums for his local church. His first major relationship with a lady named Lisa Harris inspired him to write 'Your Love' and experiment with home recordings. Although his demo tape was turned down by every New York label that received it, his tape somehow spread like wildfire throughout the clubs of Chicago. Jamie himself never became aware of its popularity due to his strict upbringing and parental ban from nightclubs. Because of its local popularity, the first commercial release of 'Your Love' was produced by Mark 'Hot Rod' Trollan and pressed as a 12" single on Persona Records in 1986. The final - and ultimately definitive -- version was released the next year on Trax Records produced by Frankie Knuckles."

MR FINGERS Can You Feel It/Washing Machine 7"
"There's a reason why so many of house music's early releases have endured over the decades. The best of them have a quality that defies logic. Early house records like Heard's own 'Washing Machine,' or the 'No Way Back' by Adonis, still have the power to stun listeners and drive clubs wild. They sound alien and beautiful, simultaneously ingrained within us and so unlike everything that followed. And few sound as beautiful, or as alien, as 'Can You Feel It' By 1986, Heard -- who was born and bred in Chicago and been playing in bands as a drummer -- had already proved to the world that he was a master of poignant, enthralling house. The previous year's elegant 'Mystery of Love,' originally released on Alleviated Records, had featured an insistent ascending bassline repeating under a plaintive, swooning analog synth, with a gentle, conga-led rhythm setting the pace. It was soon rerecorded in a slightly more fleshed-out style, this time featuring frequent collaborator Robert Owens on vocals -- 'There's a moment in our lives when we all must try the mystery of love' -- and rereleased on D.J. International. The song helped to set the Larry Heard template: A hollowed-out bass underlies percolating percussion, while a deceptively spare instrumentation lays out a wistful, yearning melody, all blanketed with ethereal ambience. But 'Can You Feel It,' released by Trax Records the next year on an EP that also boasts the equally dreamy 'Washing Machine,' took that mold and refined it into exquisite, crystalline form. As with most house of the era -- the components of 'Can You Feel It' are few. There's a throbbing kick, tuned so loosely as to make it feel like the head's in danger of falling from the drum; cascading hi-hats, shivering and shimmering; a three-chord synth pattern that flirts with melancholy; occasional distant pads and crisp countermelody; and most of all, that angular, acidic low-end. With this track, along with 'Washing Machine,' Heard had perfected his signature bass sound: an alien signal, caving in upon itself, that's simultaneously soothing and a little bit disconcerting. In 1986, it seemed like a beacon from the farthest reaches of the galaxy; even today, it's one of the most identifiable tones in electronic music. Heard himself has claimed to have little distinct memory of making 'Can You Feel It,' saying it was merely the result of fooling around with some newly acquired gear. But apparently, 'Can You Feel It' was first laid down on tape in 1984; the same session yielded a much slower, 110-BPM prototype of 'Mystery of Love.' Roland's Juno-60 polyphonic synthesizer provided the bass and melody, while the drums were courtesy of a TR-909. A friend came up with the song's title; Heard has admitted in interviews that he's not adept at naming his own work. The track ended up in the hands of the influential Chicago DJs of the era -- Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, et al -- and eventually made its way to Trax Records' Vince Lawrence. A few years later, alternate versions of 'Can You Feel It' surfaced; many of these with Vocals Samples that detracted from something that was already graceful and full of feeling. And really, how could anything improve upon the transcendent '86 Trax release, a song that feels like a blissful caress?"

ADONIS No Way Back 7"

This latter tune gave a massive boost to house music, extending recognition of the genre outside of Chicago. Adonis recorded many innovative and influential dance tracks. Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, Adonis was introduced to music at a young age. He played bass guitar with several jazz and funk bands and was eventually introduced to House music by Gary B. After listening to Jesse Saunders' 'On and On'; Adonis felt the drive to make better-produced music than what he had heard and began recording. Despite his formal training and lack of clubbing experience, Adonis made waves on the dancefloor when he recorded several of the best Chicago house singles of the 1980s, including 'No Way Back,' 'Do It Properly' and 'We're Rockin' Down the House.' He was 19 years old when he made the dystopian classic 'No Way Back,' one of Chicago house music's most iconic tracks. 'No Way Back' was a smash hit for the Trax label; according to some estimates, the single sold over 100,000 copies. The lyrics -- 'Release my soul / I've lost control / Too far gone / Ain't no way back' -- seemed to perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being lost in music with no way out. Adonis' cold, minimalist vocal delivery -- no ornamentation, or obvious emotion -- made 'No Way Back' sound effortlessly cool, and utterly terrifying. The stripped-down track, devoid of extraneous flourishes, still sounds ruthlessly modern."

JEFFERSON, MARSHALL The House Music Anthem 7"
"By the time the Jungle Brothers rapped about it in 1988, House music had been bumping in NYC clubs for years. Musically, House music was inspired by the eclectic dance records played by DJs Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy at clubs like 'The Warehouse' and 'Muzik Box'. This latter tune gave a massive boost to house music, extending recognition of the genre outside of Chicago. 'Gotta have House, music, all night long with that House, music, you can't go wrong give me that House, music, set me free lost in House, music, is where I wanna be It's gonna set you free (rock your body)' Part of what made House music so appealing was how democratic it was. Without much recording gear or a studio, anyone could make a song, have their records pressed and played in the same clubs they'd go party. Marshall's story was not that much different but the impact of his early recordings would set the blueprint for many of the artist that came out of Chicago. Jefferson's first tune, recorded in 1986, become the scene's official anthem. In titling it, 'Move Your Body (The House Music Anthem)' it was almost as if Jefferson knew what he was doing. The swing of those opening keys, the deep, anchoring beats and bass and that infectious sing-a-long chorus -- all the key elements for a dance hit were there; more than that, they would be chronicled indisputably as the core building blocks of house. Jefferson culled the song's vocalists -- including lead crooner Curtis McClain -- from his post-office graveyard shift. And, with his lyrics, he helped foment the long tradition of the self-referential track: house music about house music itself. Today we can talk for days about this influential track, however it almost never saw a release. Trax owner Larry Sherman apparently hated the song and had no interest in ever releasing it. Even after Marshall payed for his own pressings, the Trax boss didn't really see any value in that recording. It wasn't until Jefferson handed limited cassettes of the cut to preeminent Chicago DJs Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles that a buzz began to spread as far as Ibiza and London for the Chicago House anthem. The record's unprecedented rise soon changed Sherman's thinking, making it Trax Records' first global hit."

TOURE, SAMBA Wande LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. When Malian singer and guitarist Samba Touré was planning Wande ("The Beloved"), his third Glitterbeat release, he had strong ideas for the way it should sound. But once the sessions were over, he knew he had something entirely different, something even more satisfying: a collection of songs where warmth filled the grooves of every song. "We had a totally different album in mind," Touré admits, "a return to something more traditional, almost acoustic. I think this album is less dark than the previous ones. It has some sad and serious songs, but it sounds more peaceful. All the first takes have been kept." That spark of spontaneity fires across the whole disc. It was recorded quickly, in "about two weeks, only in the afternoons and with breaks on weekend to play in weddings, so it was very relaxed!" Wande is just as direct and powerful as Touré's previous work, but everything moves with a bright, danceable sensibility. Gone are the intense guitar and ngoni duels, replaced with short, incisive guitar solos and a solid, laid-back groove. Only two songs had been written before going into the studio: the title cut, which is a love song to his wife, and "Tribute To Zoumana Tereta", a memorial to the late sokou fiddle player who often collaborated with Touré. Everything else came together almost on the spot, like the rhythmic "Yo Pouhala", composed one afternoon and recorded the next, or "Yerfara", with an impeccable, chunky rhythm guitar riff to make Keith Richards weep with envy. The emphasis throughout is on rhythm, and the tama talking drum that's always been a feature of Touré's music takes a place near the front of the band. "I've always loved tama, for its sounds . . . It's a symbol of call to reunion." Starting out as a guitarist in a soukous band, everything was altered when he became an accompanist to Mali's greatest legend, the late Ali Farka Touré (with whom his mother had performed). Later, as a solo artist, he's become renowned across the globe for his passionate guitar work and fiery singing, one of the masters of his art. But, Touré says, don't call it desert blues. Don't call it African rock. That's lazy. It doesn't need labels like that. Instead, call Wande the unexpected. Call it joyous. Call it the music Samba Touré is making right now.

VA Saz Power LP
"Saz Power features a special sound: the saz, acoustic and electric. This lute instrument is the most commonly used folk instrument in Turkey. It is connected both to Ottoman classical music -- the centuries-old tradition of the wandering bards of A??ks -- and to the psychedelic Anatolian rock of the 1970s. Through archaeological excavations of mounds in Anatolia, the saz can be traced back to an age before the Common Era. And yet the saz is an international as well as a specifically Turkish instrument. It has gained a wider popularity due to its unique sound and its unique history, especially with the renewed interest in Anatolian rock music that has been growing for a decade now, and the new wave of psychedelic music worldwide. This global appeal is reflected on the album by the choice of artists: one half is played by musicians from Turkey, the other by players from Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, and Israel. The concept for this album was conceived by musician Demir Kerem Atay (aka Elektro Haf?z) and developed by the two label directors Cem ?eftalicio?lu and Ercan Demirel. It was to showcase different models of the saz (acoustic, electric) and saz-related instruments (like the buzuq and cümbü?), but also different styles, different ways to play the saz through different countries, to offer a full spectrum of the music that can be produced with it. This concept was immediately embraced by all the musicians asked to participate in the album. Here they could show their love for the instrument -- and indeed they all did so. The arrangements combine the traditional or the electric saz with the diverse sounds and vibrations of psychedelic guitars, basses, organs, synths, drums, and percussion. The tunes are based on different styles of Anatolian folk music or are contemporary compositions written by the artists. As a result, the music belongs partly to a new generation of Turkish folk music and Anatolian rock -- always updating the living tradition of these styles -- and partly to a fresh blend of Anatolian rock with other styles like electronic music or the soundtrack to a psychedelic Western." --Holger LundFeatures MLDVA & Ç?nar Timur, Kaan Bo?nak, Elektro Haf?z, Yasak Helva, Baba Zula, Boogie Balagan, Cem Y?ld?z, Hudna, Derya Y?ld?r?m & Grup ?im?ek, Ozan Ata Canani, Grup Ses, and Duble Salih.

SINFOL & OCTUAL Absolute Infinity EP 12"
Milan-based collective Just This present the Absolute Infinity EP, a joint release from Netherlands-based producers Sinfol and Octual. Featured in this package are two remixes from Gerd Janson prescribing a heavy dose of acid. Title track is a stripped back groove with a looping synth lead that wanders through ricocheting drums. For his first remix Gerd muffles the framework of the original, making room for a floating melody and warm lead, whilst the "Acid Only" version takes the components of the original and throws them into a bath full of acid. "Wire" is a moody dancefloor cut for the after-hours.

On the flip, B side "Polka Dot" is equally as tough, despite the dizzying melodies and gentle tones of the track's opening throws, landing as a crunching melee of textbook Joker sounds. ADAMO GOLAN Exile And The New LP
Fresh on Francis Harris's Kingdoms imprint comes Adamo Golán's seven-track LP, Exile And The New. Golán is the alter ego of British-German artist Laurens A. Schmidt, who has been pursuing a more club-focused techno project, while developing an ever-deeper fascination with experimental music, ambient, and film scores. Drawing influence from his adopted homes Berlin and currently London, the 26-year-old has been uncompromisingly trying to develop his own musical voice. Exile And The New expresses this ongoing pursuit and, being the first full-length and first ever release by Adamo Golán, marks the start of his most personal project to-date. Stretching over seven tracks, it touches upon a diverse set of sceneries, moods, and emotions whilst a distinctive sound design gives the work a subtle framework and guiding thread. "Fis" starts the proceedings, introducing drones and field recordings and enveloping the listener in Golán's distinct sound world. "Just Friends" merges distant snapshots of disembodied vocals with granular sound design and a sense of both space and creeping claustrophobia simultaneously. It's an approach the young producer has mastered -- "Replica" maintains an ambience of the deeply personal and a wider, hazy focus, realized via exquisite melodic fragments against a backdrop of pads and chiming electronics. Title track "Exile And The New" unfolds around another cinematic world scored via a single stringed instrument, static interference, and oceans of space. "Lie To Me" brings a piano refrain to the fore, wrapped in luscious ambience and more fragments of a conversation heard through the rain. "Then Rely On Me" slowly develops out of a haunting atmosphere and finds an uneasy but strangely beautiful flow, before "The Hungry Years" closes out the album as it started -- floating in space. The 26-year-old artist sees the album as a journey that should captivate but never impose itself on the listener. It's a gracious and neighborly invitation to dive in, get lost, and explore its facets and peculiarities. Includes download code.

A HAWK AND A HACKSAW Forest Bathing CD
"Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, is a term that means 'taking in the forest atmosphere.' It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. 'Taking in the forest atmosphere' became the inspiration for A Hawk and A Hacksaw's newest album. Their forest bath of choice is the Valle De Oro National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. This new album features ten original compositions by Heather Trost and Jeremy Barnes. The opening track 'Alexandria' features Barnes on the Persian Santur, an ancient hammer struck dulcimer, and Trost's string and woodwind melodies. The composition evokes the long trader's route between what is now Bulgaria and the wealthy cities of Istanbul and Alexandria. The band has always had a bird's eye view of this part the world -- looking for the connections between places and even eras: a belief in the power of music to reach across borders and unite. The band is based on the idea of collecting music and inspiration through travel. They are not of a place, but their music evokes places along a route. This is not urban music. It's rural: songs of the woods and roads where there are no sidewalks or street lamps to light your way. While the bulk of the music heard on this record is played by Barnes and Trost, they do have some incredible guest performances, namely the clarinet virtouso Cüneyt Sepetçi, from Istanbul, Hungarian cimbalom master Unger Balász, and closer to home, Chicago trumpeter Sam Johnson, Deerhoof's John Dieterich and Noah Martinez, of the band Lone Piñon."

SCHICKERT, GUNTER Labyrinth LP
Günter Schickert, four decades of multi-instrumental cosmic explorations, under Berlin's sky, above genres, and compromises. Marmo present on his seventh album to date, Labyrinth, the first to be released on vinyl format since 1983's Kinder In Der Wildnis. Schickert's Samtvogel (1974), equaled the imaginative leap and sonic power of the early Pink Floyd, Manuel Gottsching's 1975 album Inventions For Electric Guitar (MGART 401CD/901LP) or A.R. & Machines's Die Grüne Reise (1971). Überfällig -- originally released on Sky Records in 1979 and reissue by Bureau B (BB 096CD/LP, 2012) -- little acclaimed, spans a large spectrum of music styles, always through a distinctive and personal aesthetic, that is deeply linked to the one he firstly crafted back in '74, when Schickert pioneered the use of echo effects applied to guitar playing. And now Labyrinth, a record that stands for versatility, where soundscapes or life situations take over. The album is divided into two parts, two different production bulks and periods of Günther Schickert's life. Side A features a selection of tracks recorded in 1996, appearing on the 2012 album HaHeHiHo, released via Pittsburgh based VCO Recordings. The raga-inspired "Morning" opens Labyrinth with exotic charm and bitter-sweet nostalgia. "Sieben" kicks off with the same guitar scales of the previous theme, before the motorized progressions of a Korg MS-20 synth surprisingly storm in. "Ninja Schwert" remains on astral dimensions, it is a struggle of cosmic forces, where the steady ride of a pounding beat gets embraced by different guitar layers and analog electronic filtering. The side closes up with "HaHeHiHo", a slow ballad featuring Schickert on vocals, guitar, bass guitar, and drum machine. Side B contains material produced between 2007 and today. "Tsunami" shows the multi-instrumental and recording abilities of Günter Schickert: a field-recorded storm with mesmerizing powers, a peculiar progressive approach to guitar playing. In contrast, "Oase" muffles the intensity and jumps into a completely different soundscape, where in liaison with the sounds of a rolling drum tom and a desert-like trumpet. Like "HaHeHiHo", "Checking" represents the vocal gem of the B side, in a raw and direct way of songwriting like if Syd Barrett was his invisible helper. "Palaver" assembles different vocal recordings of Schickert into a bizarre free-style conversation. "Morning (Slide)", reprises the opening theme, this time solely performed through the caressing dilated sounds of Günter's slide guitar. Includes printed inner sleeve and download code.

VA Sing And They'll Sing Your Song LP
Megaphone's 20th anniversary compilation, now on vinyl for the first time. The Megaphone record label was founded in 1997 in the wake of concert promoter Ste?phane Bismuth's matchmaking of Liverpool quartet Shack with west-coast legend Love's Arthur Lee, after a 15 year hiatus in the latter's career. Ste?phane went on to produce Michael Head & The Strands's classic 1997 album The Magical World of The Strands (MEGAUK 024CD/LP). In the late '90s he discovered, and released material by, the then little known late folk-blues singer Karen Dalton, now acknowledged by Bob Dylan as his favorite singer in the early '60s Greenwich Village scene, quoted by Adele as her favorite singer, and revered by a large following in the new century's sprawling folk scene. Sing And They'll Sing Your Song features the broad spectrum showcased on the label's releases over twenty years, including "Bahamian Calypso" by Blind Blake, the singer who influenced the first million selling album by a single artist, Harry Belafonte's Calypso, Iraqi Oud, Sicilian young art-rockers, and the first recording endeavor by Julien Barbagallo, a multi-instrumentalist discovered a good seven-hour drive into French countryside, soon bound for fame with Australian band Tame Impala. The title of the compilation is a quote from Alan Price's "Poor People" covered here quite possibly the first time ever. It reflects the number of covers that made their way to the compilation and the label's belief that covers have been discarded too hastily since the '60s, as Karen Dalton's oblivion sadly exemplifies. This compilation comes with a 12-page booklet with unpublished photographs of every artist, including rare shots from the personal archives of Karen Dalton. Features Michael Head & The Strands, Karen Dalton, Simon Dalmais, Silvain Vanot, Lecube, Angil, Antarte, Teppaz & Naz, Blind Blake, and Omar Bashir. Includes a bonus track: a cover of Richard Hawley's "For Your Lover Give Some Time" by Sarah Zeppilli and Hans Ludemann.

CHENEVIER AND SOPHIE JAUSSERAND, GUIGOU A l'Abri Des Micro-Climats LP
Megaphone and Knock Em' Dead present a reissue of Guigou Chenevier and Sophie Jausserand's A l'Abri Des Micro-Climats, originally released on RecRec Music in 1984. Guigou Chenevier was the drummer of Etron Fou Leloublan, a band that was barely like any other. To describe them in words could only take a mind so far to the reality of what they were like -- Eccentric, absurd, whimsical, and distinct are words that come to mind. Every member was a big part of their distinction. Guigou played extremely driven, tight rhythms that cut through previous human rhythmic logic, even though progressive rock was exploring new rhythms for years beforehand. A year before Etron Fou Leloublan's last record, Face Aux Elements Dechaines (1985), Guigou released his second solo album, A l'Abri Des Micro-Climats, or in English, "In the Shelter of Microclimates". A l'Abri Des Micro-Climats is a concept-album based on a series of non-conventional "songs", composed by Guigou Chenevier and his wife Sophie Jausserand. Sophie wrote a big part of the lyrics of this album, sings on some songs (also as a duo with Guigou in "La Maladie des Fourmis"), and she also realized all the sleeve design of the album with the whale. Sophie and Guigou also used two poems by Sophie's father for this project on "Vive l'Anarchie" and "Ecartelage". They also invited some musician friends to add some parts on this record: Guy Sapin on guitar (Guigou played many years together with Guy with different groups like Encore Plus Grande, Octavo, or Barbarie Légère, amongst others), Dominique Grimaud on synths (of Video Aventures; Dominique participated to Guigou's theater and music project Le Diapason du Père Ubu in 1990-93), and Christiane Cohade on bass (of French groups Les I and the female quartet Virgule IV). A lost treasure that will surely captivate and intrigue listeners, now brought back to life. Edition of 300.

FELDMAN, MORTON We, Like Salangan Swallows...: A Choral Gallery of Morton Feldman and Contemporaries CD
"The intense individuality of Morton Feldman's (1926?1987) art and its 'painterly' aspect have tended to push his rich output of works into a zone all of their own, surrounded by a moat of stillness. This recording attempts the reverse process -- to bring his choral works (the previously unrecorded Chorus and Instruments, Voices and Instruments 1, Voices and Instruments 2, and The Swallows of Salangan) into a 'gallery' of other choir compositions of his times. Through the interaction with works of other characters and aspirations, mutual illumination might become a new Feldman experience. Two of the five other works confront Feldman's textless choral singing with words. These, however, carry their own special musical intent. Three early twelve-tone gems [Three Statements] of Will Ogdon (1921?2013) move with Walt Whitman 'into the wordless . . . away from books, away from art,' and reluctantly away from human desire, as embodied in the central poem by Thomas Campion. Robert Carl's (b. 1954) The City brings a transcendentalist layered sound to the mystical reflections of the architect Louis Sullivan, contemplating the natural and the built-human in the lake and city of Chicago. The notion of wordless chorus fans out in varied directions in the other three works. As one of Feldman's closest associates in the New York School, Earle Brown (1926?2002) intrigues us as much for the stark differences from Feldman shown by his abstract choral mobiles (Small Pieces for Large Chorus). The Sound Patterns of Pauline Oliveros (1932?2016) are less abstract than their title might imply -- moving in and out of singing itself into extended vocality, and towards newly-suggested verbal exclamations of a non-semantic kind. Warren Burt (b. 1949), a former student of both Oliveros and Ogdon at the University of California, San Diego, contributes with his Elegy the most recent piece, also the closest to Feldman's simple successions of chorale-like chords. His harmonies, however, acquire their elegiac qualities from chromatic memories and their contradictions, moving along unfamiliar paths."

TENNEY, JAMES Harmonium CD
"Asked whether he would describe his music as 'Sound for the sake of sound,' James Tenney (1934?2006) replied, 'It's sound for the sake of perceptual insight -- some kind of perceptual revelation.' This release aptly demonstrates Tenney's deep exploratory fascination with the nature and potentialities of aural perception. His attraction to these topics was simultaneously intellectual and sensuous, and its musical products at once invite both sustained reflection and the most immediate of corporeal responses. A number of his works feature pitch collections that progressively approach or diverge from the structure of the harmonic series, or that gradually move between its 'harmonically complex' or 'dissonant' upper reaches and its 'harmonically simple' or 'consonant' lower regions. A paradigmatic example is provided by Harmonium #1 (1976). For 12 String (rising) (1971) represents an arrangement for strings of Tenney's classic electroacoustic composition For Ann (rising) (1969), which predated his interest in harmony. It nonetheless shares with much of his subsequent music a ruthless simplification of form and structure that eschews narrative drama in order to highlight the subjective processes and perceptions of the listener. The first movement of Two Koans and a Canon (1982) is entitled "First Koan (a gentler Beast)" and constitutes a variation upon Tenney's earlier Beast (1971) for solo double bass. It is a study in acoustical beating, an alluring rhythmic pulsation audible between tones whose pitches are sufficiently close to each other. The "Second Koan" in turn recalls Tenney's Koan (1971) for solo violin. It exhibits another of his radically reduced formal designs: a steady cross-string tremolo that gradually migrates upwards in register across the strings of the instrument. The brief final "Canon" is the most structurally complex of the movements. Alone of the three it employs a live tape-delay system. From 1975?84, Tenney produced a number of other compositions calling for the use of a tape-delay system in live performance, which he once referred to as 'the poor man's orchestra' for its ability to produce lush textures from few instruments. The most texturally sophisticated of these pieces is Voice(s) (1984), which requires the use of four separate tape machines. The final track, Blues for Annie (1975), offers a glimpse into the breadth of Tenney's personal musical interests. His appreciation for the blues is expressed forthrightly in a literal transcription and arrangement of Jaybird Coleman's 1927 recording of 'No More Good Water 'Cause the Pond is Dry.' "

First in a series of two releases unveiling the previously unissued soundtracks made for the films of Ursula Reuter Christiansen by her partner and collaborator Henning Christiansen. A highly praised recent show at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen highlighted the pertinent themes and ongoing urgency which lies within this bold symbolic work. The exquisite score is one of the key neo-romantic works in Henning's far reaching output. CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING Den Rode Skov LP
Second in a series of two previously unreleased soundtracks Henning Christiansen made for the films made by his partner and collaborator Ursula Reuter Christiansen. Den Røde Skov ("The Red Forest") was Ursula's second film made in 1986. In stark contrast to the exquisite romantic melancolia of their first collaboration, The Executioner (PP 034LP), Den Røde Skov resides as one of the wildest recordings in the entire Christiansen catalog. Aligned more with works like the legendary collaboration with Nam June Paik and Joseph Beuys, Abschiedssymphonie (1988), Den Røde Skov unfolds as a delirious and demonic audio exhibit, at once deeply eccentric and utterly enthralling. Featuring the exceptional sound work of Ernst Kretzer and contributions from Ursula Reuter Christiansen, Addamaria Reuter Christiansen, Bjørnstjerne Reuter Christiansen, Carla Tató, and Werner Durand this is a rich tapestry of sounds, voice, and obtuse atmospheres drifting from the deeply meditative to the outright hysterical. Remastered by Giuseppe Ielasi from the original master tapes sourced from the Henning Christiansen Archive. Comes in a full-color gatefold sleeve incorporating a full-sized eight-page booklet with a selection of striking images from the original film; Red vinyl; Edition of 500.

WIRE Pink Flag 2CD/BOOK
"These are the definitive re-releases. Each album is presented as an 80-page hardback book -- the size of a 7-inch, but obviously much thicker. After a special introduction by Jon Savage, Graham Duff provides insight into each track. These texts include recording details, brand-new interviews with band members, and lyrics. The original album is presented on its own CD, accompanied by discs that feature relevant extra tracks: singles; B-sides; demos; and many previously unreleased songs. All audio has been painstakingly remastered (or, in some cases, mastered for the first time). This stunning set of presentations also includes a range of images from the archive of Annette Green. Wire's official photographer during this period, Green also shot the covers for Pink Flag and Chairs Missing. Promotional and informal imagery -- in colour and black and white -- is featured throughout the books. Most of the photographs have not been seen for 40 years -- and many have never been published anywhere before. Please note: although the three original albums remain available through digital stores and streaming services, the extra tracks from the special editions will not be released digitally. Usually contextualized against a backdrop of two years of the growing cultural importance of punk rock -- Wire's debut Pink Flag, released in December 1977 on EMI's progressive label Harvest was in fact was something 'other.' To the keen cultural commentator, the timing and label of its release will register two essential facts about it. Firstly, too late (a year after the Pistol's debut release) to be part of UK punk's first flush and secondly that the band were signaling something beyond punk by their choice of label. Further investigation would re- veal twenty-one tracks, some of them clocking in at well under a minute and covering a range of tempi well beyond the buzzsaw rockabilly that had become, even by the second half of 1977, punk's staple."

WIRE Chairs Missing 3CD/BOOK
"Presented as an 80-page hardback book -- the size of a 7-inch, but obviously much thicker. If Pink Flag proposed an almost cut and paste approach to deconstructing rock history, Chairs Missing proposed something more radical, a definite futurism with much less influence from its antecedents. Chairs Missing was at once more stark and more lush than its predecessor and has exerted its own influence on the course of cultural history, having laid down one of the earliest (if not the earliest) blueprints for the genuinely post-punk aesthetic."

WIRE 154 3CD/BOOK
"Presented as an 80-page hardback book -- the size of a 7-inch, but obviously much thicker. 1979's 154 represented the final tableau in Wire's Harvest released '70s tripych and was the first Wire album to be released to a universal set of 5 star reviews from the British Rock Weeklies thus it represented the point when the British 'pop culture establishment' publicly recognised Wire's primacy. '154 makes 95 percent of the competition look feeble' wrote Nick Kent in the NME; 'Wire are achieving a lot of things other -- and more recognised -- names have been striving for' wrote Chris Westwood in Record Mirror (a paper that had slagged off Pink Flag); 'The album is a musical Tour de Force' wrote Jon Savage in Melody Maker. Many said it was the album that Bowie & Eno had failed to make with Lodger (as hinted in the RM review), it was on John Lennon's playlist. Without a doubt, even if record sales did not bear it out, Wire had 'arrived.'"

DAVACHI, SARAH Let Night Come On Bells End The Day CD
Recital present the newest record by Canadian composer Sarah Davachi. This CD version includes an extended/complete version of "Hours In The Evening". Currently working on her PhD in Musicology at UCLA, her trajectory has been unorthodox. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, which, if you've never been there, doesn't really scream "avant-garde" (Calgary is the rodeo capital of the world). It is important and interesting that she chose to study esoteric music; as Sarah could have easily been a cowgirl or a concert pianist had her ingrained love of synthesis and sonic phenomenology not taken the wheel. There are few people that have the diligence and resolve to take their time with music... especially in a live context. Recital label head Sean McCann: "The first time I saw Sarah perform, I presumptuously told her that her music reminded me of my favorite Mirror albums (the exceptional project of Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heemann). Sarah was not familiar with Mirror, so the compliment was initially lost on her. Years back I was in the same situation when a review compared my music to Andrew Chalk, who was unknown to me at the time. So I felt a kinship in our magnetic drift towards unspoken and clustered beauty." Let Night Come On Bells End The Day follows the release of her "sound-wheel" LP All My Circles Run, which examines the isolation of different instruments. Let Night Come On, recorded mainly with a Mellotron and electronic organ, feels like a return to the nest. Burrowed in the studio, Davachi was the only performer on this album. She both splays her compositional architecture and re-contextualizes the essence of her early output. She chiseled careful and shadowed hymns; anchors of emotion. Two pillars of this album are "Mordents", which may hints of her love for progressive rock music -- and "Buhrstone", comparable to a somber funeral march of piano and flutes. These two examine punctuations of early music, gently plucking melodies and movements. The three other compositions are tonal works, blowing slow jets of lapping harmonics.Sean McCann: "I find it hard to separate 'At Hand' from filmmaker Paul Clipson, who made a melancholic film for this piece of Sarah's. A fitting title for Sarah and Paul's relationship -- frequently working in orbit of each other, meticulous and tactile. I cherish this track as a memory of Paul."

In Joseph's own words: "In 2003 I went to my first techno party, at Old River Park in Napoli, where Rino Cerrone was playing . . . I'm happy to present three reinterpretations of his tracks all these years later, having become close friends over the years and working together on many projects. He allowed me to choose whichever tracks from his incredible, timeless Rilis discography and here are the results. Two new versions of Rino Cerrone originals, and one of a Gaetano Parisio remix."

VA Brown Acid - The Fourth Trip CD
"If you thought we were getting close to the end of the Brown Acid series with our last Trip, you were dead wrong... we're only just getting rolling. The well of privately released hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal 45s is deep and we are nowhere near tapped out. Most of these records were barely released and never properly distributed so they ain't easy to find, but they're out there if you're willing to dig... and we aren't afraid to get our hands dirty. Hard calluses have formed from handling the shovel and we've sifted through a lot of dirt, but we've dug up another ten tremendous records to share with all the heavy heads out there. This volume brings together eight insanely rare and skull-crushingly heavy 45s as well as two previously unreleased bangers. You may remember the Zekes' jaw dropper 'Box' from the First Trip. If you don't, you better go back and refresh your memory, you stoner. That song rips! And so does this previously unheard recording we legally obtained from the Beverly Hills records vaults. 'Comin Back' is the longest tune we've yet to include on this series and it's a full-on rager! The only surviving copy of this recording came to us on the original 1/4" master tape from Hollywood's long-defunct Demars & Duffy Music. We did our best to preserve the recording and we think you'll appreciate the rawness. There have been numerous groups named Bad Axe over the years, but the one you hear here is the baddest. This five-piece fresh outta high school kicked out this jam (and a few others) in a Chicago studio in 1973 just for the hell of it. As a garage band, they were previously named The Burlington Express and they went on to be known as Bitch, but these dudes hit their stride as Bad Axe and 'Coachman' is their crowning achievement. It went completely unreleased until 2014 when Permanent Records issued it and 'Poor Man, Run' as a limited edition 45 with a killer picture sleeve. It's long out-of-print and only obtainable now on Brown Acid. The rest of the records included on this volume vary in rarity, but at least two of them were virtually unknown until we discovered them. You'll win the lottery before you find copies of all of the original 45s in even the best record stores. Many of the records included in this volume are owned only by the members of the bands and some of the band members don't even have personal copies. That's just how hard these guys hit it back in the day! We're lucky some of these guys are still alive and well enough to give us permission to use their masters. And for that, we thank them. And you, for all your support. Brown Acid is here to stay... as long as you'll have us. Plug in, turn up, and freak out... this is what Rock n' Roll is all about."

VA Brown Acid - The Sixth Trip CD
"Six volumes worth of licensed tracks released in just three years: doing the Dark Lord's work isn't an easy job, but somebody's gotta do it, so here is Brown Acid - The Sixth Trip, with more lined up. The heads just can't get enough obscure hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal from the late'60s and '70s! This time around Riding Easy present ten deep cuts from across the continental USA and one from the neighbors up North. This trip kicks off with an outrageous number from Gold out of San Francisco circa 1970. The band used to open their sets with this over-the-top frantic jammer which is absolutely mind-blowing! Delving deeper into the depths, Canadians continue to prove that they could bang heads with the best of 'em! Heat Exchange from Toronto released the rollicking ripper 'Inferno' on the Yorkville label way back in 1968 and it's still thumping almost fifty years later. Some more examples of the mind-melting tracks on this platter: Missouri isn't a state that brought us a lot of heavy 45s, but there are a handful of outstanding tracks, one of which is the funk-laced anthem 'Give Me Time' by Backwood Memory from Kansas City. Youngstown, Ohio, meanwhile, might have been the Hard Rock Mecca back in the day. Travis is yet another Youngstown group that aimed to get asses out of seats and out in the streets. Truth & Janey had their incredible proto-metal masterpiece 1976 album No Rest For The Wicked; released four years earlier, 'Midnight Horseman' was a 45-only track, included here! Those are just some of the fruits of months worth of record digging and detective work included on this latest installment. This is the stuff that makes life worth living, at least until the next Trip..."

HOWLIN RAIN Howlin Rain LP
"Never before issued on vinyl, Silver Current presents Howlin Rain's self-titled 2006 debut album, originally on CD only on Birdman Records! Formed in 2004 in San Francisco, the band features Ethan Miller (Comets On Fire, Heron Oblivion), John Moloney (shaman leader and percussionist for Boston's Sunburned Hand Of The Man) and Ian Gradek (bassist, iron worker, banjo-picker and world traveler). For a group of musicians who spend most of their time playing napalm-wrecked avant-rock or underground improv, this is an opportunity to downshift and ease into some classic good-time jams -- some yin to the more experimental yang of their better known projects. They draw from the resonance of The Dead, The Allman Brothers, Richard Brautigan, Exuma, Terry Reid, Golden Earring, CSNY (as well as Neil Young and Crazy Horse), Bob Dylan, Blue Cheer, CCR, Simon and Garfunkel, Randy Holden, White Heaven, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Walsh and anyone who's played piano on an album without actually knowing how to. They're equal parts dust, groove, folk, rock, dirt, mercury, earth, beer, watermelon, the Eel River and the great land that surrounds it. Howlin Rain came together with the intention of making a good, old-fashioned, free-wheeling rock album with a bared soul and a body that hangs joy, hysteria and darkness on the same rambling bones. They play unfiltered music in all its grit and all its glory; music to beat the steering wheel of your van to or sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub with your dog on a Saturday night."

ARESKI Un Beau Matin CD
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Areski's Un Beau Matin, originally released in 1970. Only those who read all the credits on record liner notes will know the full details: Areski is of course Brigitte Fontaine's partner in life, but also her creative alter ego, and the composer of the music of most of her songs. Even though it was his wife Brigitte and not him who wrote the lyrics, Areski is a poet in his own right. Furthermore, he is polyvalent: composing, arranging, singing, improvising, playing every possible instrument, and even acting. Areski, to sum up, is the perfect mix of the tradition of Munir Bashir with the European "sophistication" of someone like Jean-Claude Vannier, one foot permanently in Versailles (where he was born) and the maghreb. Areski, is left bank French songs without the stylistic effects, revised and updated through contact with Arab-Andalusian music. He is a Living Theatre style happening with a dose of cosmic free jazz; surrealist poetry viewed through the prism of Kabyle culture... Areski honed his talent observing the stars of traditional chaâbi, testing it out in bars and dives before meeting, during military service, the singer Jacques Higelin with whom he would record his first cult album (1969), and who would present him to his wife-to-be, Brigitte Fontaine. Between 1969 and 1980, with Fontaine, Areski would contribute an essential chapter to French underground music including classics such as Comme à la radio (with the Art Ensemble of Chicago) (1969), Je ne connais pas cet homme (1973), L'Incendie (1973), Le Bonheur (1975), and Vous et nous (1977). For all that, Areski has never really tried to have a career under his own name, in spite of the wonderful Un Beau Matin first published in 1970, and which it is high time to (re)discover. Those already in the know will not be surprised to see, especially, Jean-Charles Capon, author of the inspired L'Univers-solitude (1972), Brigitte Fontaine of course, or Daniel Vallancien, author of a no-less inspired duo with saxophonist Philippe Maté. All contributing to an acerbic poetic universe, concerned but never militant, and open to worldwide influences long before they became a fashion. GROUP BOMBINO Guitars From Agadez (Music of Niger) Vol. 2 CD
Restocked; originally released 2009. Led by the guitar virtuoso Omara Mochtar (Bombino), the group's debut LP -- volume two in the Guitars From Agadez series, represents the latest chapter in the modern sound of the Tuareg revolution. As of 2008, the Tuareg rebellion is in full force again, and Bombino is in exile to parts unknown. Agadez has been cut off from the rest of the country. The only road that connects this legendary city with the rest of the country is littered with land mines and the only escorts are the military. This music and its messages of hope, justice, and desire for validation of the Kel Tamachek way of life ring louder than ever. Group Bombino are gaining mythic status in and around the Tuareg community for their incendiary live performances. Coming from the same scene as Group Inerane and sharing some of the same musicians, Group Bombino showcase both sides of the Tuareg guitar style. The first half of this CD features the "dry guitar" sound, an unplugged selection of songs sung among the dunes, camels and stars of the Tenere desert. The last five tracks demonstrate the electric fury of the full band, a melding of heavy, psychedelic guitar heroics with a raw, garage sound, back beat percussion, all swirling in extended trance rock moves. Recorded live and unfiltered in Agadez and the surrounding desert in early 2007, with the band's equipment powered by generators and an unflinching dedication to the rebellion, Group Bombino's music transcends any influence and ignites the raw passion of its message to the outside world. Includes liner notes by Hisham Mayet with great photos of the musicians.

BATTIATO, FRANCO Clic LP
"On his fourth album, Clic, Franco Battiato moves further out -- into realms of pure and elemental approaches to sound -- to create a seminal work that flows naturally from one musical form to the next. Every second ripples with orbital chords, kosmische textures and schizophrenic string quartets, yet somehow manages the same dramatic pacing and variety as his avant-rock albums Fetus and Pollution. Originally released in 1974 on Bla Bla, Clic features Battiato on VCS3 synthesizer and piano, along with trusted collaborators Gianni Mocchetti on guitar and Gianfranco D'Adda on percussion. While only 'No U Turn' bears the maestro's voice, these seven tracks contain some of his boldest melodies, an underlying thread that runs through the choral arrangements and meditative compositions. Clic's dedication to Karlheinz Stockhausen comes into focus on the final piece, 'Ethika Fon Ethica' -- a rapidfire journey into Italian shortwave radio, interrupted by fleeting fragments of folk music from around the world (sampled from Henry Cowell's celebrated Folkways compilations from the 1950's). It's the perfect ending to Battiato's beautiful and expansive tour of the cosmos, signaling the uncompromising experimentalism that would dominate much of the composer's mid-1970s oeuvre. Superior Viaduct presents the first-time domestic release of Clic. Reproducing the original gatefold jacket and booklet, this reissue is part of an archival series that chronicles Franco Battiato's masterful body of work from 1971 to 1978."

Teranga Beat present composer Kyriakos Sfetsas and his Greek Fusion Orchestra, an artist with a truly multi-faceted body of work. Sfetsas formed GFO in 1976, in order to accomplish an ambition dating back to his 1960s avant-garde period in Paris: to create a piece of work that would expand the boundaries of Greek traditional music. The result is a progressive-jazz fusion masterpiece comprising complex and intriguing compositions, and performed by Athens's best musicians of the day. Sfetsas grew up in the island of Lefkada where he studied classical music from a very young age at the local conservatory. At the same time he was genuinely connected to traditional music and especially to the sound of clarinet, the lead instrument in the region's folk music. From a young age Sfetsas would perform with Gypsy orchestras in local feasts. It was this experience that inspired him to create the GFO after his return from Paris in 1975. Sfetsas founded the orchestra while working at the National Radio, an orchestra comprising mostly members of the Variety Music Orchestra who had a solid background in both classical and traditional music. In that way he was able to realize his ambition, something he could not do in Paris since it was impossible to find musicians trained in both musical cultures. The recordings on Greek Fusion Orchestra Vol. 1, forming only a small part of his overall body of work with GFO, are previously unreleased. The music was recorded stereo on reel tape and with high standards for the time, with the current mastering process highlighting even more the quality of the recordings. The result is truly impressive and pure audiophile album.

WILSON, CLAY Osho EP 12"
Clay Wilson's third release on The Bunker New York is a dance EP that manages to be both restrained and cacophonous. The unreleased track "Osho" is given the remix treatment. While the original version is subtly shifting with a cascade of rhythm at the forefront, the Jasen Loveland remix acidifies the track and adds a punch of darkness. Derek Plaslaiko's "oogly boogly" remix delivers a jangly swing that loosens up Clay's tight production to great effect. rrao's contribution to the mix is a subtle and weird version with a murmuring vocal amping up the surreal abstraction.

STRAFE F.R. The Bird Was Stolen CD
Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, Strafe Für Rebellion, or Strafe F.R., is a long-term collaboration between the artists Bernd Kastner and Siegfried M. Syniuga, which started in 1979. After a long period of hibernation, The Bird Was Stolen marks their return to Touch following four previous releases in the '80s and early '90s. From their early connection with the local scene, centered around the Ratinger Hof in Düsseldorf, Strafe went on to develop a unique and influential form of sound sculpture that pioneered the use of field recordings alongside home-made instruments and the use of the studio as a performance space. A new track, "Virgin", which appeared on the recent Touch Movements CD/book (FOLIO 002CD, 2017), gave an early indication that they are back at the peak of their powers. The Bird Was Stolen presents 14 new compositions that push the signature sound of Strafe F.R. All songs recorded by Strafe F.R. in 2017 at STRAFE Studio, Düsseldorf, Germany. Features vocals by Caterina De Re and Strafe F.R. Artwork and photography by Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Denis Blackham.Strafe F.R. explain the recording:"1. We have a piano that is somehow completely bare-boned as if a butcher had been at work. The piano is lying on its back -- we can climb into its corpse. The piano strings are easy to access and we prepare them with anything that influences a possible recording. Loudspeakers are installed. Inside the piano we play bass and guitar to use the resonance of the strings of the piano. 'Pianosmoke' was recorded in this way.2. Sound sources are often 'accidents'. We were recording with our old Uher Portable Tape Recorder -- all of a sudden the machine developed a strange malfunction: the Uher had problems with its engine. Himmelgeist was born. The recorder began to 'scratch' like a vinyl record, but it was the recorder doing everything itself; we could also manipulate the speed with our hands. This was magnificent. Strange rhythms just happened, the tape recorder did it... We are thankful that we managed to record all of this.3. We often amplify sounds quite loudly, that actually have a very low natural dynamic. This is interesting when recording guitar, piano and the human voice... To reduce the normal recording level by an extreme and amplify the soft, low sounds."

DOG CHOCOLATE Moody Balloon Baby LP
What are Dog Chocolate bothering us with now? What is it? They have a new album called Moody Balloon Baby. Musically it's as frantic and frayed as we've come to expect, loose and whittled to a sharp point, but the knots are visible. Following the album Snack Fans (UTR 077LP, 2016) and Or, a spilt with Ravioli Me Away (UTR 063LP, 2014), this time it's all faster and there are more textures. Textures that come to mind: A plastic broom that has been used to sweep up glowing embers and the bristles have melted; A pink chalk that got stepped on; A green beam from a laser-pen scuttling around on a pebbledash façade; A biro shoved through a custard doughnut; The band are four people; Jonathan hits two drums and a cymbal with force and conviction; Matthew plays his guitar through an array of confounding soundhouses; Robert has no soundhouses but his guitar fingers are deft; Andrew tends to a pocket menagerie of homemade percussion, keyboard, and harmonica. Some of the subjects addressed include: Subconscious inspiration; English nationalism; The post-colonial discomfort surrounding museum displays; The enigma of rocks; Wanting to be tiny and free of responsibilities in the face of the massive world; Environmental concern/internet guilt; Cosmic aligned co-incidences and why to trust them. A recurring theme on Moody Balloon Baby is an investigation of the creative act itself. What does it mean to make things? Does it matter if those things are ignored or forgotten? Why be in a band at all? What are the problems with the genius narrative? Is it ever OK to use animals in your art? In the face of a weird world getting ever weirder what role does art play, if any at all? The jury is out on whether Dog Chocolate is a self-help band or an ideologically foggy protest band, but in just under 25 minutes the band manage to cram in bucket-loads of ideas, mess, confusion, and fun. Now all that is left to be done is to round-off this press release with a perfectly pithy finishing line. 180 gram vinyl; Matte finish, normal board sleeve; Matte lyric insert; Includes download card; Edition of 500.

FUKUI, RYO Scenery LP
LP version. Mastered at half speed. 180 gram vinyl; Stoughton tip-on sleeve. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) presents its first release, the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's highly sought-after masterpiece Scenery, originally released in 1976. Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous, and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence, and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have. The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LTD-LP) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing two live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come. Sourced from the original masters.

FUKUI, RYO Mellow Dream LP
LP version. Mastered at half speed. 180 gram vinyl; Stoughton tip-on sleeve. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) present the official reissue of criminally overlooked Japanese jazz gem Mellow Dream by Hokkaido pianist wunderkind Ryo Fukui, originally released in 1977. Released in conjunction with the its legendary predecessor 1976's Scenery (WRJ 001CD/LTD-LP). Firmly standing on the foundation he laid down with Scenery, Ryo Fukui continues his exploration of modal, bop, and cool jazz sounds with meticulous grace and absolute mastery. As its title suggests, Mellow Dream ventures into slightly mellower, more soulful, and sometimes more contemplative territories (the Bill Evans-reminiscent "Mellow Dream" and "My Foolish Heart") while still packing the commanding punch Fukui's work is loved for, as heard on the amazingly bombastic "Baron Potato Blues" or the gigantic McCoy Tyner/John Coltrane-influenced "Horizon" which sees each member of the trio -- Satoshi Denpo is on bass and Yoshinori Fukui is on drums -- demonstrating their virtuosity for nine exhilarating minutes. With his sophomore album, Ryo Fukui swings from melancholy to vibrant joy with ease, and reminds you that jazz is best served with a pinch of blues, and displays an immensely rare combination of pure talent, unique personal approach and focused discipline. The man undeniably deserves a spot in the pantheon of all-time great jazz pianists. After releasing the outstanding Scenery and Mellow Dream back-to-back, Ryo Fukui worked on developing his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui), and even releasing two live albums. He sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that all jazz lovers should explore. Sourced from the original masters.

UON Untitled LP
Huerco S' West Mineral label follow Pendant's sublime Make Me Know You Sweet album (OUEST 099LP) with uon's wholly absorbing study in Brownian motion and isolation tank ambience. It's the second release from the enigmatic project whose debut 12"s in 2017 was among the year's finest. On this extended player, uon poetically describes three different behaviors of water and its amorphous states through a gently elemental push-and-pull of forces best considered in the vein of Basic Channel, Wolfgang Voigt's Gas, or the shimmering convections of Ross 154. Beautifully elusive but crucially watermarked with a sense of originality in personalized style, "Solaris" opens with the 17-minute title cut -- a seemingly infinite journey through swells of diffracted chords and silty filters, simultaneously connoting sensations of opiated amniotic safety and oceanic infinity. Where the A side feels like floating in a lush mass, the bass-heavy articulation of his B side's "J" may well urge listeners onto the 'floor with the same, inexorable traction of classic Vainqueur records, and in a way smartly reflects uon's mutable DJ style, before the aqueous qualities of his final track "Bus" soothes to a deeper blue state of loved-up introspection which, like "Solaris", could have easily taken up a side to itself. Bliss. Master and lacquer cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.
