TWINS That Which Is Not Said CD
That Which Is Not Said is an album about learning to accept oneself within and to accept the reality of all that comes from without. It's an eponymous abstract exposition on navigating the realms of intimacy that the living world inevitably unveils and their equally inevitable fallout, the panic of abandonment and the loss of desire, and dragging oneself back up the hill once the lonely valleys lose their allure. Written and recorded over the course of two years in TWINS' home studio in Atlanta with various synths, samplers, drum machines, and his very own flesh-and-muscle vocals, That Which Is Not Said is the result of countless studio sessions and experiments that were refined and distilled into the songs presented here, rigorously worked out through live performances and repeated critical overhaul. The material was all conceived more or less the same way: a mood or feeling would be channeled through whatever machines were plugged in at the time and eventually a foundation would be developed upon which a loose structure would be improvised. Experimenting and throwing around vocals came next, making up phrases and lyrics on the fly until something clicked and a pathway cleared through the fog and mist. TWINS (the acronym from which the album derives its title, if one's curious about the order of origin) is the mutant machine-pop project of Atlanta producer, label operator, and all-around aesthete-visionary Matt Weiner. Having spent the better part of a decade reveling in a moody murk that intersects seductive synth-pop with Featureless Ghost and grotesque industrial-dance grooves in his own right as TWINS, Weiner has more than proved his sincerely sinister and auspiciously artful finesse of synth-based music. Operating from his home studio, arrayed with various tools of the trade, Weiner tempers his subtle scourges of sound with an unending sense of bold exploration, processing tracks of pulse-heavy aural catharsis. When performing these songs live, he brings an array of hardware to back up his flooring vocal performances, using his entire being to work the audience into a frenzied trance. When not making music as TWINS, Weiner also runs the CGI Records label and co-runs the DKA label. Weiner also performs in the duo Pyramid Club with Chris Daresta and produces music in the studio with Stefan Ringer as SM42 and with the esteemed CH Rom as Wo.

JPATTERSSON Folks & Fanfare CD
It's been around three years since JPattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of dub and techno with PROGaDUB (ACKER 005CD/004LP, 2015). A lot has been happening ever since, and that's very noticeable on his second album, Folks & Fanfare. It still has all the signature elements of JPattersson: There's his dreamy, virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals, there's his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a downbeat rhythm. However, besides his fanfares there's now also many folks, many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. There's a track with Berlin MC Longfingah, as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years. Also features Superpendejos and Timboletti. CD version includes three bonus tracks featuring Discoshaman, Mollono.Bass, and Dreadsquad.

VA African Scream Contest 2 CD
Who knew that some of the most exciting Afro-funk records of all time were actually made in the small West African country of Benin? Once Analog Africa released the first African Scream Contest in 2008 (AACD 063CD/AALP 063LP), the proof was there for all to hear; gut-busting yelps, lethally well-drilled horn sections and irresistibly insistent rhythms added up to a record that took you into its own space. Ten years on, intrepid crate-digger Samy Ben Redjeb unveils a new treasure trove of Vodoun-inspired Afrobeat heavy funk crossover greatness. Right from the laceratingly raw guitar fanfare which kicks off Les Sympathics de Porto Novo's pile-driving opener, it's clear that African Scream Contest 2 is every bit as joyous a voyage of discovery as its predecessor. Ignace De Souza & The Melody Aces' "Asaw Fofor" would've been a killer instrumental but once you've factored in the improbably-rich-to-the-point-of-being-Nat-King-Cole-influenced lead vocal, it's a total revelation. The screaming does not stop there, in fact it's only just beginning. Already familiar to fans of the first African Scream Contest as a mainstay of ruthlessly disciplined military band Les Volcans de la Capitale, Lokonon André vanished in a cloud of dust at Ben Redjeb's behest with a list of names and some petrol money, only to return a few days later having miraculously tracked down every single name he'd been given. The source of this Afrobeat bounty-hunter's impressive people-finding skills -- his training with the KGB -- highlights the tension between encroaching authoritarian politics and fearless expressions of personal creative freedom which is the back-story of so much great African music of the '60s and '70s. Happily, in this instance, Lokonon was tracking the artists down to offer them licensing deals, rather than to arrest them. Samy Ben Redjeb's determination to track this amazing music to its human sources pays huge karmic dividends. Features Stanislas Tohon, Elias Akadiri & Sunny Black´s Band, Picoby Band D´Abomey, Antoine Dougbé, Orch. Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, Black Santiago, Lokonon André et Les Volcans, Sebastien Pynasco and L´Orchestre Black Santiago, Super Borgou de Parakou, Cornaire Salifou Michel et L´Orchestre El Rego & ses Commandos, Gnonnas Pedro and His Dadjes Band, and Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. African Scream Contest 2 includes meticulously researched text and effortlessly fashion-forward photography, supplied by the artists themselves. CD version comes with a 44-page booklet.

Near Future is the collaboration between Blancmange's Neil Arthur and solo electronic artist Bernholz. Files were swapped, sounds, and lyrics re-wired, and Ideal Home is the gloriously minimal result. The album is icy and detached; beautiful and otherworldly; Bernholz's spoken word monolog on "Dawn" sounding like a warning signal from the subconscious, while digitized electronics usher in some of Neil Arthur's most intimate vocals.

SANDWIDI, PIERRE Le Troubadour De La Savane - 1978/1982 CD
A few years before Upper Volta changed its name to Burkina Faso, thanks to Thomas Sankara's dream of a new society, Voltaic music emerged as some kind of true cultural revolution in the wake of the country's independence in 1960. Popular music that sprung up from Burkina Faso owed much to the music from neighboring countries and to the longing for "cultural authenticity" conveyed through Guinean music. The first two decades of independence saw the upcoming of such orchestras and artists, such as Pierre Sandwidi. Nicknamed "the troubadour from the bush", Pierre Sandwidi stands as one of the finest Voltaic artists from the 1970s. He belonged to an unsung elite of Francophone artists such as Francis Bebey, G.G. Vickey, André-Marie Tala, or Mamo Lagbema. His entire released output consists of less than ten 7"s, two LPs, and a bunch of cassettes. Along with his friends Jean-Bernard Samboué, Abdoulaye Cissé, Oger Kaboré, Joseph Salambéré, or Richard Seydou Traoré, he was part of the "vedettes en herbe" movement. Their songs were played on the national radio before being released as a single, recorded live in the studio. In 1970, Pierre Sandwidi traveled across the country, working for the state. He met Bobo-Dioulasso cultural entrepreneur and Volta Jazz boss Idrissa Koné, who offered him to record a few songs for his own imprint, Disques Paysans Noirs. Sandwidi delivered "Lucie", a romantic song in the classic mandingo vein. In 1975, Pierre Sandwidi recorded two more singles at the Maison du Peuple. Using an Akai recorder as a soundboard, he was backed by Super Volta's mighty guitar player Désiré Traoré. In 1976, he recorded three more 45s with L'Harmonie Voltaïque as a backing band. In 1979, while in Abidjan, Pierre Sandwidi recorded his first full length LP with the help of Voltaic Prince Edouard Ouedraogo. He launched his own "callao" dance, as a homage to this Sahelian bird that bounces instead of walking. Confronted with many temptations, Sandwidi sang about his will to stay true to his values, being first and foremost an African. A true callao song, "Mariétou" sounds like genuine French Sahelian pop. After Sankara's fall in 1987, Sandwidi distanced himself from politics, focusing on writing new songs and plays. Twenty years after he died, this compilation stands as a vibrant tribute to one of West Africa's most outstanding and adamant artists. CD digipack includes 16-page booklet.

DATASHOCK Krauter Der Provinz CD
"... Datashock 2018: Eighty fingers playing, but what are they all up to? Are Datashock in command of their instruments or is it the other way around? What we do know -- this is freely improvised music, complete with rattles, rumbles and whistles. Music as a social happening, both in terms of process and outcome, where individual and collective development can thrive -- an ecstatic experience! . . . Imagine gathering eight people under one roof and ushering them into a recording studio -- everybody's busy nowadays (sometimes in precarious situations, but always doing one thing or another, incessantly), this being the age of late capitalism and all that. Anyway, diaries checked and off we go. Next stop: Oetinger Villa, Darmstadt. Kolter has already swept the place clean, DJ Ulf Eyes has brought beer from the waterfront, MC Cobra is dressed in the latest threads from Berlin, McWerner and Cha Cha have everything they didn't forget to bring from Cologne and up the Rhine and -- natch -- El Haze and Biber Bergi line up alongside LL Cool P from Saarbrücken. Pizza delivery number dialed, bottles opened, lights, camera, action. Machines bleep, a violin cries out, a clarinet howls, guitar and bass weave their way around the drums. The spell lasts for several days, then the magic goes back in the box, the recording is done. Everyone heads back to where capitalist realism awaits in fifty shades of gloom. Alas, it was over so quickly! . . . Groups like Datashock are few and far between, more's the pity -- raise your glasses to friendship! -- groups who, in spite of everything, meet up regularly to record free improvisations and then hit the road to share their experiences with an audience. Cornbread Records present a reissue of Marcos Valle's debut album Samba "Demais", originally released in 1963. Marcos Valle's incredible debut established him as one of the premier performers and composers in the emerging Brazilian popular music landscape. Barely out of his Rio high school, where classmates included fellow Brazilian musical legends Edu Lobo and Dori Caymmi, Valle caught the eye of label executives and had a debut record out before his 20th birthday. Though he would later go on to be a massive superstar across his native country and a cult figure throughout the rest of the world, this humble beginning show Valle already had a complete mastery of the samba songwriting form and was already a brilliant performer. An essential Brazilian title. Includes one bonus track. 180 gram vinyl.

BETONKUST & PALMBOMEN II Center Parcs 2LP
Recorded in an aging holiday park during off-season, Center Parcs is the debut LP by Dutch artists Betonkust and Palmbomen II; a conceptual, musical-tristesse full of lo-fi harmony, and fanciful, psychedelic-colored modulations, with an undercurrent of saturated, outsider-house beats, all recorded to tape. With a shared passion for experimental music, and gnarled Dutch electro, the duo has crafted an LP of esoteric-electronic-pop, reflective of the time the two spent holed-up in isolation in Center Parcs. Palmbomen II, aka Kai Hugo, is the electronic-focused, alter-ego of Palmbomen. Existing in his secondary iteration, Palmbomen II gained notoriety for his alternative, warped style, having released two LPs, both receiving critical acclaim. Originally from the Netherlands and now living in Los Angeles, his musical relationship with Betonkust stretches back several years, leading to a unique live, and studio-working symbiosis. Meanwhile Betonkust -- hailing from the westerly Dutch shores -- has been notching up kudos points with his Detroit-like analog sound. Having found their studio-synchronicity, the duo has already notched up a couple of select EP releases, plus a featured track on Dekmantel's ten-year anniversary series. "It's a weird environment, but we like it," Palmbomen II says about Center Parcs, where the album was recorded. Originally built in the '70s, Center Parcs De Eemhof in Zeewolde provides a pseudo-tropical environment for vacationing families, with an aging, ersatz jungle; its faux decor gradually fading to grey. Recorded during the winter, the two Dutch men took-up home in one the park's chalets with select hardware -- predominately synths and drum machines -- and recorded all of their progress to tape. Being the only occupants in the melancholic, somber settings, the duo made an LP that was reflective of the unpretentious surroundings. Everything on Center Parcs was recorded on hardware, in the moment; "real jams" as the guys describe them. No computers. It was through this in-the-present-process that led to the recondite, lo-fi shoegaze record, reflective of their shared influences -- from the likes of I-F. through to Cocteau Twins. Opener "24x33", has a reverberated VHS aesthetic; "De Rust Die Je Zocht' ("The Peace You Were Looking For") sounds like an angelic score to a forgotten family game show; "Nintendo Pantera" a solemn, upbeat Detroit-retro-fitted-vapor ware melody. The album is a follow up to the Center Parcs EP -- the producer's debut cassette release on Canadian label 1080p in 2016.

Sinister Whimsy For The Wretched contains the long out-of-print albums, Sugar Fish Drink (1992) and Large Ladies With Cake In The Oven (1993). Both discs are remastered by Andrew Liles. You will never hear these better. Sugar Fish Drink, "Cod Surrealism", is a distinctly wet aberration on paranoid aesthetics occasionally coordinated by John Balance and Steven Stapleton. For Large Ladies With Cake In The Oven, all tracks were previously released in some form or another. Songs titles have been altered from their original forms on their original releases. "Head Cold" is very close to being the exact song as the Miss Ticker remix of "Cold" from the Thunder Perfect Mind CD reissue and "Steel Dream March Of The Metal Man".

BLACK DOG, THE Post-Truth CD
It's a funny old world, and yet again, The Black Dog have provided the soundtrack. Our fast-approaching dystopia has been envisioned and documented by the band for decades. Now, The Black Dog's two new albums, Post-Truth and Black Daisy Wheel (DUST 055CD/LP), translate their growing horror into some of their most accessible and impactful music, translating our manufactured reality into high-energy dancefloor constructions on Post-Truth, and reflective ambient excursions on Black Daisy Wheel. Long familiar with the tropes and pitfalls of esoteric undergrounds, in both the pre- and post-internet eras, The Black Dog have ventured deep into contemporary conspiratorial cultures with a trenchantly critical eye. In the '80s, conspiracy theories were a tonic for a skeptical mind, a stimulant to agile thinking. Today, they have become the stock in trade of mainstream political influence. The scene has morphed into a rabbit hole where nothing is "really" real, everything is a hoax, and everyone is out to get you. The mindset is beyond paranoid, the discourse so far post-fact that only opinion and assumed identity matter. Arguing against proven science is a part of the entry criteria, and willful pedantry its standard currency. The impact on mental health is corrosive: fear, uncertainty, and doubt multiply and replicate until the most ridiculous theories are invented to explain the most basic things: tarmac, banana skins, duvets. Auto-suggestion is rife, where willing victims drink bleach (MMS) at the behest of YouTube videos, flat-earthers are taken seriously, and the manufactured fearful believe they are being gang-stalked for finding monsters on pixelated screens. The distinction between the real world and the world of an auto-hoaxer is so blurred that reality melts away. You couldn't make it up, even though that is exactly what the conspiratorial fringe (now one sharp corner from the mainstream) always do. As soon as you start engaging with people in the so-called "truth movement", one minute it's painful, but the next can be genuinely funny; these are people who are both on edge and upon the edge of a larger social and political reality that, for worse and for (even) worse, defines our times. Hence these two very different albums. BLACK DOG, THE Black Daisy Wheel CD
It's a funny old world, and yet again, The Black Dog have provided the soundtrack. Our fast-approaching dystopia has been envisioned and documented by the band for decades. Now, The Black Dog's two new albums, Post-Truth (DUST 054CD/LP) and Black Daisy Wheel, translate their growing horror into some of their most accessible and impactful music, translating our manufactured reality into high-energy dancefloor constructions on Post-Truth, and reflective ambient excursions on Black Daisy Wheel. SURGEON Luminosity Device CD
Surgeon's new full-length, Luminosity Device, takes Bardo Thödol -- the Tibetan Book of the Dead -- as a starting point for a rhythmic journey into those interstitial spaces where body, mind, and soul no longer seem like distinct categories. It has the potential to turn anything from a club visit to a train commute into a collision with the otherworldly. Since the 1990s, Anthony Child has been one of the most consistent and pivotal electronic music producers to use that craft as a tool for achieving transcendence. Under his aptly chosen DJing and production alias Surgeon, his technical precision and clarity of creative vision have resulted in a highly influential form of techno-mesmerism documented in exhaustive live sets and incisive studio recordings. His talent for wielding beats and sonic textures as healing technologies and as magical weapons simultaneously, and particularly for excelling in "long-form" treatments, has made him not only a key contributor to the legacies of touchstone labels Tresor and Downwards, but also a prized collaborator (his British Murder Boys duo with Regis has capitalized on both producers' natural intensity to devastating effect). The pure techno idiom has never been his sole method of exploring the vastness of inner space, or of illustrating the interaction of thought and memory with the external environment: the work published under his own name, e.g. the two-volume set Electronic Recordings From Maui Jungle (EMEGO 215CD/LP, EMEGO 230CD/LP), along with newer collaborations like the Transcendence Orchestra with Daniel Bean (EMEGO 246LP), have shown Child to have a masterful knowledge of the intimate qualities of drone and atmospheric sound: the sound-scaping talent utilized in these projects is capable of drawing out acute emotional reactions from a broad spectrum of listeners.

KHAN, SEAN Palmares Fantasy Feat. Hermeto Pascoal LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. For his third album for Far Out Recordings, London-based multi-instrumentalist and one of Europe's finest saxophonists Sean Khan ventures to Rio de Janeiro to collaborate with iconic Brazilian polymath Hermeto Pascoal. Taking its title from the escaped slave settlement "Palmares" in the Northeast of Brazil during the 1600s, Palmares Fantasy is Khan's utopian jazz message for the world, and it features Azymuth drummer Ivan "Mamao" Conti, bassist Paulo Russo, guitarist Jim Mullen, and guest vocals from Brazilian chanteuse Sabrina Malheiros, and Cinematic Orchestra frontwoman Heidi Vogel. Like Hermeto Pascoal, Sean Khan is a self-taught musician. Never able to afford his original dream of studying at Berklee and having been turned away from Guildhall School of Music for being "too raw", he became disillusioned with what he saw as the exclusivity, elitism, and dangerous institutionalization of the jazz world. Yet Sean's love for music and the drive to create never faltered. Hermeto Pascoal, the man Miles Davis once dubbed "the most impressive musician in the world", is a similarly independent artist. by the 17th century settlement of Palmares in Brazil's Alagoas region, which was free from the Portuguese crown's murderous exploitation of South America for a century, Khan notes his fascination with the fact that while made up mostly of escaped African slaves, many deserter conquistadors also joined the settlement. Hearing the deep-grooving title track with this history in mind, the listener is transported to a futuristic musical eden, with Mamao's insatiable 10/8 rhythm back-boning Hermeto's wild improvised vocals, Rhodes, and whistles, while Sean's harmonically brilliant sax and flute add more layers of moody, characterful expression. "Moment of Collapse" is Sean's poetic study on the uncertainties of modern day western civilization, delicately presented by the gorgeous vocals of Heidi Vogel and drenched in lugubrious strings and Alice Coltrane-esque harp. The two covers on the album are of Hermeto's own "Montreux" (on which Hermeto plays solos on a teapot and a pint of water), and an uplifting soulful jazz-funk take on Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges MPB classic "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" featuring the vocals of pioneering nu-bossa voice Sabrina Malheiros. The recording sessions for the album were part of an intensive and hugely productive eight-week excursion to South America for Far Out Recordings boss Joe Davis in the summer of 2016.

NEW PARENTS Transient Response LP
"Debut album by this Turners Falls-based quartet led by Adam Langellotti of Sore Eros and widely hailed for his engineering work. The sound on Transient Response is languid ruralist prog-pop, with help from Gary War, Ma Turner, Shannon & Beverly Ketch, and other Valley travelers. New Parents can be pretty raw live, but the overall vibe here is smoother and distinctly out-of-time. Different segments remind me of everything from Fraser & DeBolt to Brinsley Schwarz to Great Plains and back again. Something about the way the production is layered gives the record a feel quite redolent of the early '70s, but the more you play it, the clearer its contemporary origins become. Amongst the classic rock instrumental touches there are short bursts of weirdness that telegraph a 21st Century post-whatsis aesthetic as clearly as a skunk broadcasts stink. Jenifer Gelineau's violin work is an extremely important part of the tunes on which it appears. Her work here has a texture that binds Adam's voice and words to a point that looks forward and backwards in equal measures. Without it, I feel as though the album would have a certain wobble to it. Her fiddle is the gyroscope at the center of things. The fact that Anthony Pasquarosa did the cover art and Lee Ranaldo provided the insert photo are indicative of the company New Parents keep. Both of these cats are a hard-to-define mix of traditional and modern components. The same is true of Transient Response. And to those bitter orphaned critics who are bound (by law) to call this Dad Rock, I would hasten to correct them. It's Mom and Dad Rock, and if you can't dig that, your chances of ever hooking up with a real family are just about nil." --Byron Coley, 2018

FOOM & FOAM Foom & Foam LP
"Documentation of a rare summit meet by two of New England's stranger musical figurines, recorded at the Whitehaus in Jamaica Plain, MA back in 2012. The piece was created as a sort of dub battle showdown, with FOOM's turntables and Foam's cassettes & doodads all plugged into a 4 track and lit the fuck up. The jams here are languidly-paced, in comparison to a lot of contemporary assemblage, and the instant compositions unfold in way that puts one in mind of classic work by the L.A.F.M.S. Too often these days, music with some of the same experimental approach as is heard on Foom & Foam is either done at breakneck cartoony speed or stretched out endlessly. And while I like a good head-snapping or an excuse-to-nap as much as the next guy, I prefer it when artists doing abstract work allow you the space to ponder their plunder without making you wallow in it. With that in mind, this album unwraps itself like a precious gift for all to enjoy. By using previously recorded sounds as source, the artists eradicate both the ability and the necessity of trying to identify the instruments or objects producing the noise here. These are just sounds, freed from their original sonic context by the initial act of recording, now existing as naught-but-signals, to be interpreted by our brains as they see fit to interpret them. The F&F duo seem to understand this implicitly. And it allows them to manipulate the surface representations of previously-captured events in ways that recall Dennis Duck Goes Disco (1977), Steve Fisk's 448 Deathless Days (1987) and even Orchid Spangiafora's Flee Past's Ape Elf (1979). These confusional classics are all of a piece with the work here. Timeless beauty. All for less than the price of a good over-the-knuckle leather thimble. I'm not sure what you're waiting for, but get over it." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 450.

MAZOZMA Stark Joy LP
"There is something very special about the sound of a bummed-out smart person alone in a room somewhere (studio or not) with just their guitar for solace. Many killer examples of the form exist -- Skip Spence's Oar (1969), Pip Proud's Adrenaline And Richard (1968), Roy Montgomery's 324 E. 13th Street #7 (1999), and so on. All of these records shine with very special darkness. To this list, I submit the new Mazozma LP, Stark Joy. Kentucky ex-pat, Mike Turner has been using this recording handle for a while. We did one previous album with him, Heavy Death Head (FTR 268LP, 2017), and like most of his solo work we've heard, it was a blasted lo-fi ramble through fields of destroyed form. Elegantly crafted, but so utterly fucked-up, it could make you feel dizzy. Stark Joy is a horse of an entirely different color. The music here is song-based, only strange in its detailing, and more straight ahead than any Warmer Milks fan would dare dream. Still, the ineffable Turner genius shines through like a lighthouse in a shitstorm. Recorded on an iPhone, probably nude, Turner's songs here contain a world of folk-longing, played with an all-mid-range approach that broadcasts deep spiritual weariness with the best of them. I could start name-checking the hordes, but I'll spare you. People familiar with Mikey's work will be struck by how straightforward and outright pretty his melodic constructions and guitar figures are. Those who are new to his work will just dig how open the album is. It's the kind of record that gives you a certain amount of comfort if you're wrapped up in your own personal storm. Conversely, if you're feeling good, you can focus on the vaguely upbeat tone that eventually suffuses everything. Having a hard time getting it off the turntable. It's that kind of record. Deeply personal in a certain way, but one which leaves it available to infinite interpretation, depending entirely on the listener. In a word -- interactive. As fuck. Get it today." --Byron Coley, 2018 Co-released with Mystra Records. Edition of 200.

RASMUSSEN/TASHI DORJI, METTE Mette Rasmussen/Tashi Dorji LP
"Mette Rasmussen is a Danish saxophonist, based in Norway, who has been recording with some of our favorite players (Chris Corsano, Alan Silva, Mats Gustafsson, Ace Farren Ford, etc.) She has also formed this duo with Asheville-based guitarist, Tashi Dorji (whose combo, Manas, has had two LPs on Feeding Tube this far: FTR 208LP, 2015 and FTR 330LP, 2017). The duo material for this LP was recorded in Montreal, right around the same time Mette and Tashi recorded a trio set for Trost (with the addition of drummer Tyler Damon). And it's all great stuff. Mette's playing has a raw tonal approach that makes one think of Eric Dolphy at his harshest. Her lines evince much of the same nimbleness as well. The effect is not unlike being hit in the face by a bunch of snakes with wings. Naturally, Tashi is playing electric in order to make himself heard, and the clots of sound he manages to coax out of his amp are worthy of comparison with such form-erupters as Keith Rowe. On the first side, there's a real physicality to the blocks Tashi creates, as well as to the manner which Mette's reed attacks them. It's an incredible sound -- brutal and communicative in equal measures. But as much as this may imply a musical surface akin to that of Borbetomagus, there's a lot more open space here. Especially on the second side, the music is paced to give itself over (now and then) to crenellations that allows in as much light as they emit. This record is a supremely human effort and hopefully the harbinger of much more to come." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 250.

MCCANN, LES Layers LP
"Starting in the late '60s, jazz music started to take an interesting, and very soulful turn. Influenced by the funk of the day -- from James Brown to Sly & The Family Stone -- the art form, generally not considered a funky musical genre, started to stretch out and fit into the times. It was a fertile era, and to reciprocate, funk, soul and groovy rock fans started to discover accomplished, open-minded jazz artists like Les McCann, whose tunes made sense to their ears, even if bebop hadn't grabbed them. This incredible album -- long a favorite of forward-thinking hip-hop producers and DJs -- washes over listeners from the first chords of the incredible album opener, 'Sometimes I Cry,' led by McCann's array of analog synthesizers and backed by an excellent rhythm section (Donald Dean on drums; Ralph McDonald on percussion and Jimmy Rowser on bass). Truth be told, highlights are hard to pick out, but fans never go long without returning to the fuzzed-out funk of 'The Harlem Buck Strut Dance,' 'Let's Play (Til Mom Calls)' and 'It Never Stopped In My Hometown.' These keyboard-drenched grooves sat alongside record stacks brimming with Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye's '70s soul and, of course, Miles Davis' space funk experiments of the era (like Bitches Brew). Whether you're new to Layers or just updating a well-loved and heavily worn-out copy, throw this one on, light one up and lose yourself for an hour-- or even a couple days, if you have the option."

TOURE, SAMBA Wande CD
When Malian singer and guitarist Samba Touré was planning Wande ("The Beloved"), his third Glitterbeat release, he had strong ideas for the way it should sound. But once the sessions were over, he knew he had something entirely different, something even more satisfying: a collection of songs where warmth filled the grooves of every song. "We had a totally different album in mind," Touré admits, "a return to something more traditional, almost acoustic. I think this album is less dark than the previous ones. It has some sad and serious songs, but it sounds more peaceful. All the first takes have been kept." That spark of spontaneity fires across the whole disc. It was recorded quickly, in "about two weeks, only in the afternoons and with breaks on weekend to play in weddings, so it was very relaxed!" Wande is just as direct and powerful as Touré's previous work, but everything moves with a bright, danceable sensibility. Gone are the intense guitar and ngoni duels, replaced with short, incisive guitar solos and a solid, laid-back groove. Only two songs had been written before going into the studio: the title cut, which is a love song to his wife, and "Tribute To Zoumana Tereta", a memorial to the late sokou fiddle player who often collaborated with Touré. Everything else came together almost on the spot, like the rhythmic "Yo Pouhala", composed one afternoon and recorded the next, or "Yerfara", with an impeccable, chunky rhythm guitar riff to make Keith Richards weep with envy. The emphasis throughout is on rhythm, and the tama talking drum that's always been a feature of Touré's music takes a place near the front of the band. "I've always loved tama, for its sounds . . . It's a symbol of call to reunion." Starting out as a guitarist in a soukous band, everything was altered when he became an accompanist to Mali's greatest legend, the late Ali Farka Touré (with whom his mother had performed). Later, as a solo artist, he's become renowned across the globe for his passionate guitar work and fiery singing, one of the masters of his art. But, Touré says, don't call it desert blues. Don't call it African rock. That's lazy. It doesn't need labels like that. Instead, call Wande the unexpected. Call it joyous. Call it the music Samba Touré is making right now.

Glitterhouse present the live recording of a magic night -- the Dutch/Belgian chanteuse Chantal Acda in a duo-setting with Grammy award winning guitarist extraordinaire Bill Frisell. Captured in superb sound quality. Chantal Acda on the recording: "When I wrote the songs of my record, I dreamt to hear Bill's sounds on it. I thought this feeling would go away but it never did. So I decided to contact him to see if he would work with me and put the last pieces of the puzzle together on this record (Bounce Back, 2017). He liked the music so I flew to Seattle to record his wonderful guitar playing on the songs. Meeting him felt like coming home. And this connection was still so fresh in my memory when I arrived back to Belgium. We kept in touch by writing each other and sometimes he drew me funny faces. We were invited to play at the wonderful Jazz Middelheim festival and finally ended up on stage together. In the dressing room we quickly went through the songs but we kept all surprises for the stage. It was a wonderful experience for me. One of the highlights of my musical career. It wasn't meant to be recorded but it was. So listening back to these recordings we thought it would be nice to be able to share this with the people who were there but also the people who missed it and are curious to hear what happened. SENORA Senora LP
Growing Bin Records present the first reissue of Señora's self-titled release, originally released in 1981. A favorite private German jazz funk gem. Spring is in the air and groove is in the heart for Hamburg's most loveable record label. Following the freak beat festival of Wolf Müller and Niklas Wandt's Instrumentalmusik Von Der Mitte Der World comes a release that's been in the pipeline since the organic imprint first took root; the first reissue of the beautiful Señora. Beguiling and brilliant, this private press princess makes you want to dance, dream, and do cartwheels, then breaks your heart when you realize you'll never meet her -- a rare beauty indeed. So it's time to let Basso play cupid and introduce you to the love of your life. Eagle-eyed associates might recognize the sleeve as Basso's everyday avatar, chosen in tribute to his favorite jazz-funk record of all-time. Originally released in limited quantities back in 1981, the self-titled Señora was the sole release from a quartet of German groove maniacs, coming together in one ecstatic union of rhythmic precision, smooth riffing, and melodic mastery. Take opener "Paul" for example; a continent away from the West End, this sublime slice of raw guitar, silken keys, and gliding bass could have made Mel Cheren proud. From there you're taken on a journey through the syncopated slide of the jazzy "My Way, Your Way", the samba sway of the mild and mellow "Easy Going", and the poetic piano of "Pearl", a triumphantly esoteric tone poem to close the A side. "Señora" ups the tempo on the flipside, galloping through tight triplets, fusion guitar, and mind-expanding synth play. "In The Mood For A Walk" brings a strolling bassline and tender tonality, executed with all the ease of the Sunday morning which dawns on the extended and expansive cool, bringing the LP to its final emotional release.

ELEVENTEEN ESTON At The Water LP
Under the tree -- in the cave -- At The Water, there's where you'll find Eleventeen Eston; savoring the shade since his 2014 debut LP Delta Horizon turned the spotlight his way. Taking shelter in the subterranean, the Perth musician has found a sound saturated with entheogenic splendor, growing something gorgeous from the grotesque. Finding a natural home on Hamburg's Growing Bin Records, Eston emerges into the daylight with a dreamy LP, At The Water. The vision quest begins with "C In Sympathy", a freefall into the perverse beauty of the Domus Aurea, brought to life with E2-E4 electronics, chorus pedal shimmer, and muted bass. Leaving the grasslands, you dip a toe in the water with the hypnotic ripples of "2 D'or (Cab Chassis)", a Carl-Craig-goes-new-age number which fuses the electronic and acoustic to perfection. Delicate piano, crystalline synth tones, and tape-saturated emotion lend their cinematic charm to "East Perth Stories (Closing Titles)" before the propulsive bass and soft-focus groove of "The Four Fountains" hits you with the heat haze. Eston takes another tape-y diversion on the sci-fi synth scape "I Remember", while the coastal cool of "Thread & Truth" picks up the wavy white funk baton from Spike. The B side brings more beauty as the drifting and dreamy ambience of "I Float, I Am Free" gives way to the Windham Hill guitar licks, snaking bass, and billowing textures of "A Squall, 1988", offering a welcome echo of the wonder of Wilson Tanner. "Where There Is Rain" sees Eston tune the Ute radio to 96FM Perth, marrying cascading keys, evocative vocal samples, and lush guitar with a solid '80s pop beat, before he slows the pace for "Sand Man" a skewed and stoned bit of beach funk that's perfect for seduction. He then parts ways with the panoramic "Dory On Swan", a serene soundtrack to lapping waves and magic caves.

DETROIT SWINDLE High Life CD
Detroit Swindle present High Life, their second studio album on the duo's own Heist Recordings. The heart of the album was recorded over a three-week period at their Amsterdam studio in March 2017, and the release will coincide with the fifth anniversary of the label. Since forming in 2011, the Dutch duo have carved a unique place for themselves in the scene. Their sound -- which merges references from multiple decades into one smooth aesthetic -- quickly rose to popularity for its careful blend of soul and rhythm, taking cues from their passion for obscure records, with influences ranging from house and funk to Afrobeat and soul. Dynamic live shows and DJ sets afford them a packed touring schedule across the globe, whilst their label Heist Recordings is credited with consistently breaking new artists. High Life explores the intersection of live and electronic music, with much of the improvised material left largely untouched to maintain its organic sensibilities. Detroit Swindle describe the album as an "electronic album with a live approach, combining our love for house, ambient and jazzy harmonics, making it a record interesting for the club, as well as a pleasant album to put on at home." High Life explores stripped back soul and groove driven house over ten glistening productions. Featured on the album are a sun-drenched collaboration with British singer/songwriter Tom Misch and a deep workout with the vocals of trained gospel singer turned house aficionado Seven Davis Jr. on "Flavourism" and Lorenz Rhode who accompanies the duo for their live shows, features on the infectious melodies of "High Life". "Call Of The Wild" incorporates none other than Dutch nine-piece brass band Jungle By Night.

JAVERLING, RICKARD Album 3 LP
Rickard Jäverling, born and raised in Borlänge, Sweden and now living and working in Stockholm, is a wayward and productive musician. Besides releasing material under his own name, Jäverling is/has been part of constellations such as Dödens Dal, Liljor, and Jäverling & von Euler. Album 3 is his third solo album. It breathes psychedelia, dub, Swedish folk, "progg", and continental vintage electronic music. The songs on this album are in a way like a compilation of short stories rather than chapters in a novel. The common factor in this album is Jäverling's exquisitely worked-out melodies and the warm, round production but the songs can, due to the rich storytelling qualities of each one of them, almost be regarded as small albums of their own.

VA London Is The Place For Me 2LP
2018 repress. Subtitled: Trinidadian Calypso In London, 1950-1956. 2011 vinyl repress of what was the 2nd album on the Honest Jon's label, originally released 2002. When the Empire Windrush, an old troop-carrier, arrived at Tilbury on June 21, 1948, and inaugurated modern Caribbean immigration to Britain, it also supplied calypso with its best-known image -- on Pathé newsreel, Lord Kitchener singing his new composition "London Is The Place For Me." Kitch had boarded with Lord Beginner at Kingston docks, Jamaica, on Empire Day, May 24. In London they joined a milieu of fine band musicians familiar with Caribbean musical forms and already represented on numerous recordings crucial to the development of British swing and jazz music. Travelling with their own core audience, the Trinidadian calypsonians brought with them the vocal music of Carnival. Traditionally this ranges from social satire to sexual double-entendre, from voodoo to the most pressing issues of the day, from sporting events to competitive insult. The experiences of Britain's growing Caribbean population were to be fabulously rich in raw material. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

BAILEY/ANTHONY BRAXTON, DEREK Royal 2LP
Repressed. Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey and Anthony Braxton's Royal, expanded to include both intended volumes. Volume 1 was originally released in 1984; the second volume was never issued. The second release in a series of collaborations between Honest Jon's Records and Incus: three double-LPs of the legendary free-improvising guitarist Derek Bailey, solo (HJR 200LP) and in duos with Anthony Braxton and Han Bennink (HJR 202LP), augmenting the original releases with marvelous, previously unissued music. Recorded in 1974, at the Royal Hotel in Luton, with Braxton playing soprano and alto saxophones, and Bb and contrabass clarinets. Two volumes were planned; only one was issued, till now. This was an early transatlantic meeting between the leading free improvisers. Many of Braxton's signature techniques and ideas were gestated in such sessions. It still brims with inquisitive musical creativity and knockabout jazzbo allusiveness. Newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The records are manufactured by Pallas.

BAILEY/HAN BENNINK, DEREK Derek Bailey & Han Bennink 2LP
Repressed. Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey & Han Bennink, originally released in 1972. The third release in a series of collaborations between Honest Jon's Records and Incus: three double-LPs of the legendary free-improvising guitarist Derek Bailey, solo (HJR 200LP) and in duos with Anthony Braxton (HJR 201LP) and Han Bennink, augmenting the original releases with marvelous, previously unissued music. The tussling vegetables in Mal Dean's cover-sketch somehow befit perfectly this extraordinary duo of Bailey and the great Dutch drummer Han Bennink. Recorded in London in 1972, Incus 9 was their second record (after an Instant Composers Pool in 1969), becoming a blueprint and inspiration for generations of free-improvisers. It is paired here with a brilliant session from the following year, with the same power and friendly combativeness, and oodles of creativity, technique, and humor. It's obvious how much they loved playing together. Newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The records are manufactured by Pallas.

AMES SANGLANTES Chindia Tower Impalements 3CD
Triple-CD reissue. Originally released as a triple cassette of only 66 copies. Âmes Sanglantes means "bloody souls". Nowhere else in Âmes Sanglantes' sprawling and massive wild/punk/junk discography has this idea been more focused than on the epic and original Chindia Tower Impalements, as well as on cult tapes like Anti-Anti (1999), Mega Star Barbies, Violation, and the immense and impossible 12-hour-long Crackdown cassette box from Hospital Productions last year. This newly remastered version is the definitive document revealing the cruelty of the Wallachian landscape myths and realities. Dracula vs. Vlad Tepes... Caustic, brittle, and eerie, the six long-duration tracks secure Âmes Sanglantes as one of the most original and overlooked extreme electronic monikers of the '90s North American cassette underground. Distorted but textural where the voices of young androgynous screams mingle together with chirping birds and wolf breath. It's the subtle layering and tape splicing structure beneath the crust that elevates this above the average "noise" recording. You will have to dig and claw past the walls built out of clay bricks, but beyond that is a rich and subtle world of loops equal parts Georges Braque and William Basinski, like collapsing scaffolding melting and crumbling on top of each other. This is rotting electro-acoustic studies where one can see a portrait float to the surface in the rippling and muddy puddles. Shockingly, after nearly 100+ cassette-only release since 1996, this comes forward as the first Âmes Sanglantes compact disc. A true student of the '90s, you'll find a stunning presentation that is equal parts in reference to Cold Meat Industry as well as Japan's Alchemy Records. So open up the old CD changer, light a few candles, and a pour the red wine for an epic that revives the imagination of times lost and losses yet to come. RIYL: William Basinski, Incapacitants, Brighter Death Now, and the early works of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement. Remastered by Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never, Ben Frost, Prurient). Eight-panel, foil block digipack.

Dislocating pop culture, also evident in her monthly residency for NTS in 2017 and mix for FACT. GIFFONI, CARLOS Vain LP
Vain marks the prodigal return of Venezuelan artist Carlos Giffoni to the avant-electronic music scene he was instrumental in shaping with the seminal, hybridiszng No Fun Fest and No Fun Productions label, which was home to debut releases by Oneohtrix Point Never and Noveller, and classics from Haswell and Prurient during the late '00s to early part of the '10s. Carlos's first new release in six years, Vain was drawn from hundreds of hours of improvisations made at Carlos's Malibu studio, the final LP describes a tumultuous narrative in affective abstract swells and pulsating rhythms that trigger curious sensations and emotions ever familiar to his variegated, extreme, yet essentially organic output. Despite not releasing anything for the past six years, Carlos still sounds like he lives and breathes electronic music. Where those "noise" artists who originally played at No Fun Fest and released on his label have arguably carved out major career paths from myriad mutated genres, Carlos's music still feels captivatingly ancient yet advanced and uncannily hypnotic. In a cascade of minimalist Arps and cloud dynamic harmonies, the album's story starts in the vortex of "Vain's Face" and sweeps through the granular flux of "The Desert" to a staggering piece of noise techno dissonance in "Erase The World", which calves away into the curled plunge of "Hands" and the anxious needling of "We Pay The Price". At the mid-way point it turns lusher with the pulsing and coruscating kosmische tang of "Stop Breathing", leading to the metric complexities woven into "Faith And Pain" and the heightened high-register sensitivities of "I Can Change", whose shatterproof hyaline steeples ultimately deliquesce into the shimmering beauty of "Sun Rain". With hazy resolution and ambiguity of effect, the record works its magick in memorable style. Like the best abstract sonics of Peter Rehberg or Keith Fullerton Whitman, an intuitively applied formula of geometry, rhythm, tone, and timbre add up to inexorable effect, rendering the closest possible connection between the machines and the artist's pathos. For synesthetes and attuned listeners, the effect is likely to conceive new colors on the mind's eye and move them to finer states of emotive response. In others words: it's a seriously good listen. Cover painting by Wiley Wallace. Master by Al Carlson; Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

DAGAR, USTAD ZIA MOHIUDDIN Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani CD
"Around ten years ago, deep into a cozy and hazy night following a concert with my sound brothers Daniel O'Sullivan and Kristoffer Rygg in London (as Æthenor), they graciously introduced me to a recording of rudra veena (a kind of noble deeper bass relative to the sitar, in a way) as performed by dhrupad master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Dhrupad, for those who do not know, is a branch of Hindustani classical music said to 'show the raga in its clearest and purest form'. It's pacing concentrates heavily on the slow, contemplative alap section and works with specific microtonal gestures and deep characteristics of resonance . . . In early 2015 I was able to make contact with Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's son Bahauddin and some of his American students/disciples, primarily Jeff Lewis. Over time we developed a friendly and educational exchange, access to a massive archive of recordings and developed these two paired titles for my label . . . I'm proud to be able to reveal these to date unreleased archival recordings of one of the masters of dhrupad, Z. M. Dagar, to the public for the first time. Zia Mohiuddin Dagar was the nineteenth generation in a family tradition known as Dagar gharana, a rich lineage which continued and performed the musical form of dhrupad. Initially, dhrupad was a rigorous, austere, devotional genre that was sung in Hindu temples. But between the 16th and the 18th centuries, it became the preeminent genre in royal courts in North and Central India, and the Dagar gharana developed and continued publicly following the eventual loss of court patronage for dhrupad in the 19th century. The French ethnomusicologist Renaud Brizard covers the story of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's life and teaching (a long story also in Seattle, my hometown!), the Dagar family and gharana, the rudra veena and more topics in an extensive set of liner notes in this release. Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani were recorded in a private house concert in Seattle at the home of the Benegals in March 1986 (the week before the accompanying release, Raga Yaman (SOMA 029CD/LP), was recorded). The Benegals were friends (and Shantha Benegal was also a student) of Dagarsahib who sometimes hosted Hindustani music concerts in their home. It's a rare glimpse of a more intimate, personal and perhaps different kind of performance considering the form of dhrupad." --Stephen O'Malley, March 2018, Paris, France Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

OZKENT, MUSTAFA Genclik Ile Elele LP
2018 repress, black vinyl. "Originally released in Turkey 1973, Özkent's masterpiece (creation) of an all instrumental Turkish Psychedelic Funk album, filled with classic beats and breaks still inspires long time fans and first time listeners. The funky rhythms, hypnotic percussions, and heavy break beats makes this a holy grail amongst DJ's and music fans alike. Only a handful of copies from the original pressing are known to still exist making this reissue a welcome addition to any record collection. The concept is very complicated, futuristic and free from categorization. Traditional folk songs mixed with rock, jazz, blues, funk and psych. Özkent took traditional turkish folk songs and reconstructed them for the new 'hip' generation. It was recorded live in just one day with some of the best studio musicians in Turkey. The band was made up of 2 drummers, 2 guitarists, 2 percussionists, a bassist and a Hammond B3 organist. Özkent created his own unique guitar sound by adding extra frets and a clutch of effect pedals in order to create quarter notes and emulate turkish traditional scales. Mustafa Özkent has since made arrangements for hundreds of other artists in Turkey. But this unique album documents his most revered work. In the more than 40 years since the Mustafa Özkent Ve Orkestras? recorded Gençlik ?le Elele, it seems that the world is still just discovering this gem."

Coleman burst on the scene with his fiery playing and strong compositional statements. This Is Our Music is a brilliant statement of purpose, a youthful declaration of power and innovation, and one of the cornerstones of early American free-jazz. BYRD, DONALD Byrd In Hand LP
Jeanne Dielman present a reissue of Donald Byrd's Byrd In Hand, originally released in 1959. Recorded in 1959 at the legendary Van Gelder Studios in Hackensack, New Jersey, this is considered one of Donald Byrd's finest LPs. The then 27-year-old trumpeter had many LPs under his belt already, but this was his second on Blue Note, where he would stay for decades and release the best music of his career. Byrd had a fruitful run in the late '50s with the great baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams and here they are joined by long-time Thelonious Monk Quartet tenor-man Charlie Rouse, and a great rhythm section. After a rousing take on Sinatra's "Witchcraft" the record features three strong Byrd originals and two compositions from the group's pianist, Walter Davis, Jr. A hard bop classic from one of the strongest players of the era.

PYRAMID Pyramid CD
33 minutes of pure, unadulterated, psychedelic krautrock courtesy of Pyramid, an obscure studio project produced by Toby Robinson, aka The Mad Twiddler. These sessions were recorded circa 1975-76 in Cologne for the underground Pyramid label, which was operated by Toby and his friend Robin Page (the Fluxus artist). During that time, Toby worked as engineer and assistant at various studios in Cologne, including the famous Dieter Dierks studios, where most of the albums from the Ohr/Pilz/Cosmic Courier catalog were registered. Having access to the studios during dead hours, Toby recorded lot of sessions just for fun without any commercial interest, featuring friends and musicians who frequented the studios and the underground art/music scene of Cologne. Some of these sessions were later released as handmade vinyl micro-pressings on his Pyramid label with help from artist Robin Page. Master tape sound. Includes insert with liner notes by Alan Freeman. RIYL: Pink Floyd, Cosmic Jokers, Agitation Free, Ash Ra Tempel, Gila, Porcupine Tree, Amon Düül II. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN Wisteria CD
Dunedin trio Death And The Maiden return with a second album of hypnotic post-punk dream-pop. Wisteria continues the exploration of the dark bounds between love and death, beauty and decay unveiled on the band's debut (2015). Although the BPM of their shadowy sound world may have increased, the new album seems even more somber than its predecessor, with a deeper undertow of anxiety beneath the slow-motion trance pop. The songs on Wisteria are still anchored by Lucinda King's hypnotic basslines, as her vocals deliver lyrics exploring human experience within natural and unnatural worlds, but this time Hope Robertson's delay and reverb-drenched guitars break free, soaring above the decelerated, minimalist techno sounds of Danny Brady's electronic instrumentation and programmed beats, at times hinting at psychedelic surf music exotica. This unusual combination of techno, post-punk, psychedelia and dream-pop makes the new album from Death And The Maiden another beguiling proposition to explore.

Yet there's a playfulness here too, and not just in the title. An electronic duck caller is hacked to produce one track and elsewhere children's Casio keyboards and entry-level MIDI synth modules deliver darkly sophisticated, progressively experimental dream-pop mini-symphonies.

CRAYOLA LECTERN Happy Endings LP
LP version. Happy Endings is an album of extraordinary music, borne of an extravagance of imagination, unfettered by convention or fashion, poised rather sexily in some other dimension beyond the usual parameters. With this in mind, you could call it psychedelic. Death and love crop up a lot on this album, with a sacred/profane, soulful/irreverent, silly yet deadly serious wisdom, which recognizes the universality of its themes, allowing them to gently explode into your ears. Crayola Lectern is reaching out here. It's musick with a "K". A man in great demand by the cognoscenti as your go to musical visionary, Crayola Lectern is Chris Anderson with Alistair Strachan, Jon Poole, Bob Leith, Damo Waters, and Bic Hayes."An absolutely superb new album from one of the UK's most underrated mavericks. Imagine Robert Wyatt, High Llamas, Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Todd Rundgren all in one magnificent human. That's Crayola Lectern. Superb arrangements throughout, and in common with all the above I suppose, a sense of adventure and playfulness is evident throughout. One of my favourites of the year so far" --Simon Raymonde, Bella Union.

There are clearly moments in the London Concert when things that have not precisely happened before emerge from one partner, are caught and supported by the other in a way that, too, is still new 40 some years on, and which prods the initiator to hold and develop a particular line with the clear support of the other." -- Stuart Broomer. DJ LILOCOX Paz & Amor LP
Paz & Amor, or "peace and love", is the solo début of deep, hypnotic Batida grooves by DJ Lilocox. A longtime core member of Lisbon's Príncipe label, Lilocox is one third of the PDDG (Piquenos DJs Do Guetto) crew beside DJs Firmeza and Maboku, and accounts for half of CDM (Casa Da Mãe), also with Maboku. In solo mode Lilocox alloys sensuous atmospheres with rolling percussion in a widely appealing style that resonates with the slickness of the Sonhos & Pesadelos LP (P 020LP) by his near namesake, DJ Lycox, but personalized by more spacious production values and a rugged vision of dancefloor romance and energy. With the CDM project on hold for now, DJ Lilocox presents a more mature sound now characterized by his focus on rhythmelodic cadence and synthetic sensuality. Between the album's lusting highlight in the Ron Trent-esque Afrohouse of "Fronteiras", to the starker, gqom-like tension of "Ritmo & Melodias", Lilocox plays to the 'floor's timeless needs in a ruggedly forward manner, deftly shifting his weight from a pendulous footing of "Vozes Ricas" to the woodblock knocks and drones of "Paz & Amor" and the snake-hipped swinge of "Samba" with the dancer's balance and emotions always a priority. After the scorching début EP from P. Adrix (2018), the first solo DJ Lilocox record perfectly demonstrates his depth and diversity whilst maintaining Príncipe's rarely paralleled and flawless reputation for the freshest, timelessly effective dance music. Edition of 500.

Blessed with the production of skills of today, the eyes of a tailor, and the chemoreceptors of a perfumer, the Klasse Wrecks and Grafiti Tapes man delivers nine tracks that do it all: tribal, trance, breakbeats, house, 303s, bleeps, rave, dubby deepness, and pianos. Like a trip down the 3D-visual-kaleidoscopic-artwork* hole, or a snake charmer without a flute. Intake as a whole, record it to your tape desk, and feel like tuning into on a pirate station in '95. OISEAUX-TEMPETE & THE BUNNY TYLERS The True History Of The Tortoise & The Hare According To Lord Dunsany CD
The Bunny Tylers is a duo from Lebanon whose core consists of two prominent musicians from the Beirut scene: singer-songwriter and guitarist Charbel Haber and multi-instrumentalist and producer Fadi Tabbal. Their first two releases, Glitches & Drones 2013-2016 (RPTD 016CD, 2017) and Chance Meetings (RPTD 020CD/LP, 2018), were released by Lebanese indie label Ruptured. The music of French free-rock collective Oiseaux-Tempête is bred from places in turmoil. Embracing the freedom of improvisation, theirs is a secular music that crosses boundaries and cultures, embodying an intersection where post-rock, jazz, Arabic music, punk, and experimental electronic music find common ground and refuge. Through their elegiac musical constructions, Oiseaux-Tempête hope to bear witness, to create sense and be a part of the world, obstinately refusing the catastrophe. Rather, they seek to grab hold of the present, cradling it and letting it breathe, breaking through to the obscure "now", creating geographic and temporal bridges. The band's recent album, AL-'AN!, was recorded in Beirut in 2016 with a host of local musicians (SR 440CD/LP). Toward the end of their stay in the Lebanese capital, Oiseaux-Tempête played a concert with Charbel Haber and Fadi Tabbal from The Bunny Tylers. MEYERS Struggle Artist LP
Struggle Artist is the new album from Justin C. Meyers, the Minneapolis-based composer, artist, and head of the Sympathy Ltd. label. Meyers is a unique, underappreciated talent in contemporary electronic music. His greatest strengths are twofold: his compositions have a meticulous structural logic, revealing a hermetic and austere formalism; concurrently, his compositions have a deep, introspective narrativity grounded in his lived experience, evoked with a mature clarity. Together, they make Meyers one of the most interesting electronic musicians working with cutting-edge sonics today, unlocking their latent powers of metaphor and figuration. His previous album, 2016's Negative Space (1981-2014), deals with the onset of chronic illness and near-death experience. Its careful, anechoic meditations on the failing body are a resounding achievement, and the album remains a high watermark of acousmatic music in the 21st century. Struggle Artist portrays Meyers's expectations and disappointments arising from making art in his free time. Created initially during lunch breaks and in hospital waiting rooms, and finished after being laid off from his job, it catalogs the despondency of the precarious life. If Negative Space was about the fallible body, Struggle Artist is its violent collision with late capitalism. Meyers's formal language employs the barest of ingredients: scintillating digital synthesis, evacuated field recordings, impossibly crisp transients, and an elegiac harmonic sensibility. On Struggle Artist, he sets up scenarios that anticipate some musical event or flourish, only to renege on them with stark about-faces or resolutions into dissonance. Tracks like "Self Portrait" evoke the trauma of reconfiguring and rewriting one's own identity to (unsuccessfully) appease indifferent funding sources like grants and fellowships, which Meyers wryly calls "Granular Opportunities". Stability is not conceded until the stunning eponymous final sequence, that ambiguously signals either the willed discontinuation or reaffirmation of Meyers' musical career. The impression is not entirely bleak. Meyers's sound design is buoyant and luxurious with its clean edges and lush tonalities, such as in "Draw Distance" or the "Expectations" diptych. This is Meyers's most playful record, albeit always gesturing towards its melancholic narrative. This guarded, dark humor is alluded to in his sleeve art and track titles. In an environment where most record releases don't break even and the artist usually shoulders the financial burden, Struggle Artist explores what the psychological burdens are. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. 140 gram vinyl.

HANSSON, BO Music Inspired By Lord Of The Rings CD
Bo Hansson's Music Inspired By Lord Of The Rings was the first ever release on Silence, initially issued in 1970. This was also the first Bo Hansson solo album, the Swedish legend known to be one of the earliest to place "space music". Produced as a tribute to the Tolkien trilogy, this is stunning instrumental psychedelic music, with plush atmospherics -- Don't Fear The Hobbit! This issue includes a 16-page booklet with the complete Bo Hansson story and is a digitally and analog remastered issue from 2001; the producer Anders Lind says it sounds just as it should and need no further mastering. Performed by: Bo Hansson (organs, guitar, Moog, bass), Rune Carlsson (drums, congas), Gunnar Bergsten (saxophone), Sten Bergman (flute). Lord Of The Rings was released late in the fall of 1970 in Sweden and became an immediate success. Bo himself was in the midst of a very creative period, new melodies were constantly popping up in his head, so when Lord Of The Rings finally got released in other countries there were already three more tracks added compared to the first Swedish issue. In the Progressive Rock Encyclopedia, Bo Hansson is mentioned with reverence and respect. He is the first to play "space music", he is a precursor to the French prog-celebrities Gong and England's Henry Cow, and contemporary style-formers as Genesis and Yes. Bo Hansson is an innovator in the most noble sense of the word. Bo Hansson and his music has been and still is an inspiration to many musicians round the world. Same audio master as the 2002 edition; new cover art with English title.

VA A Totally New Sound LP
Somewhere between electro soul and melodramatic pop. Music focused towards the youth set in some strange dream. Not sugarcoating anything. These late '80s/early '90s recordings are something to truly behold. The Aset Players were a collective founded by a group of individuals deeply involved in community improvement initiatives and the struggle for justice and equality. A project that would link motivated adults with talented young people in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The compilation takes songs from three released projects of Aset, and one semi-unreleased single. Latonya, a spunky 11-year-old kid singing about divorce, love, and dancing is the poster child of Aset. There's three songs from Treo, a trio of high school gals in harmony singing about love and relationships, and one from Whax, the high school boys who were a bit stranger; the silly side of Aset. All are backed by The Aset Players. Housed in a newly-designed jacket with inner sleeve containing info on the label/artists and an interview with the label director, Mba Mbulu.

MUSLIMGAUZE Maroon LP
Separated from both its reputation and its sleeve art, the music of Muslimgauze explores the relationship of visual sensations -- space, color, depth, illusion -- to the listening experience. The music on Maroon is dub-like inspired techno music, laidback with voices appearing randomly in the mix. The thick drums and rich found sounds that densely populate the soundscapes on Maroon give materiality to the warm presence of the synth washes. The music is so layered and textured that it ceases to be aural and exists almost solely in the realm of sight and touch. Devoid of reference to any external reality, Muslimgauze's ambience gets remolded by subjective experience and moved around in the memory. By shifting the quality of perception with the producer's sleight of hand, Bryn Jones (the Mancunian behind Muslimgauze) makes explicit the interiority of the senses. Thus, the fact that our inner life determines our relationship to the world outside becomes the music's unspoken subject. Divorcing Muslimgauze's music from its image is like listening to Take That without seeing Robbie's pelvis or Mark's pouting. This is precisely why the music is so effective. Relocating music's power within the listener instead of as an external force acting upon the listener forces reappraisal and reinterpretation. The muezzin's wailing call to prayer and the shrieks of women mourning the dead conjure up images of a fierce "death-to-the-infidels" fervour in the Western imagination, and are recast as holy prayers for the ultimate, womb-like peace that most ambient music aims to express. The usually easy exoticism of sampled tablas and ouds instead hint at the dread on the road to the water-colored bliss of run-of-the-mill ambient and force the listener to internalize difference and confront the received images of Islam that Muslimgauze detour by such strong powers of suggestion. Handmade thick cardboard cover, sewed, with text gold screen-print. Mixed By John Delf. Originally released on CD in 1995. Limited edition of 500 (numbered).

CARLO Tres 12"
Originally from Malaga, Spain, Carlo brings summer vibes with his Tres EP. "Tres" drops straight into a swift, lightly shuffling drum machine groove, already building its atmosphere with carefully crafted reverbs before the smooth but powerful sub rounds off the low-end. The groove is beefed up more on "B-162", with warm saturation melting the melodic bassline into the low-end of some seriously housed-up beats. Carlo turns up the disco for the final track of the EP, at least as far as the bouncing bass of "Biznaga" goes. The rest is pure house music delight with a pitched-up, goosebump-inducing vocal.

SPACEMEN 3 Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To 2LP
Housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code; includes the "legendary Northampton demos from 1986". "Amidst the swirl that is Spacemen 3's discography, Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To occupies a pivotal position -- one right at the nexus between their garage beginnings and their expansionist future. While much of this material is expanded upon via Sound Of Confusion and The Perfect Prescription, many devotees consider these urgent, minimally treated recordings as the prime document of Spacemen 3 at this stage. Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To casts Spacemen 3 alongside the mid-80s cadre of UK front-line rockers, contributing a distinct variation of high pop shining through layered noisy guitars. Ultimately, this collection serves to exalt the strength of Spacemen 3's songwriting over the atmospherics and production assemblage that would permeate their later efforts. Be it the rave-up rendering of 'The Sound Of Confusion' or the churning take on 'Losing Touch With My Mind', these full band recordings capture the excited and inspirational spark of psychedelia rather than deep-dive ruminations on sonics and space."

SFETSAS, KYRIAKOS Greek Fusion Orchestra Vol. 1 CD
Teranga Beat present composer Kyriakos Sfetsas and his Greek Fusion Orchestra, an artist with a truly multi-faceted body of work. Sfetsas formed GFO in 1976, in order to accomplish an ambition dating back to his 1960s avant-garde period in Paris: to create a piece of work that would expand the boundaries of Greek traditional music. The result is a progressive-jazz fusion masterpiece comprising complex and intriguing compositions, and performed by Athens's best musicians of the day. Sfetsas grew up in the island of Lefkada where he studied classical music from a very young age at the local conservatory. At the same time he was genuinely connected to traditional music and especially to the sound of clarinet, the lead instrument in the region's folk music. From a young age Sfetsas would perform with Gypsy orchestras in local feasts. It was this experience that inspired him to create the GFO after his return from Paris in 1975. Sfetsas founded the orchestra while working at the National Radio, an orchestra comprising mostly members of the Variety Music Orchestra who had a solid background in both classical and traditional music. In that way he was able to realize his ambition, something he could not do in Paris since it was impossible to find musicians trained in both musical cultures. The recordings on Greek Fusion Orchestra Vol. 1, forming only a small part of his overall body of work with GFO, are previously unreleased. The music was recorded stereo on reel tape and with high standards for the time, with the current mastering process highlighting even more the quality of the recordings. The result is truly impressive and pure audiophile album. CD version comes in a digipak; Includes a booklet with photos and liner notes.

KENNEDY, INIGO Strata CD
Inigo Kennedy has released upwards of 100 records since he started in 1996, cementing his esteemed aesthetic and revealing his digital mastery further with each release. This immense discography embraces both the traditional and the ambitious; prevalent fundamentals and established concepts meet discord, clashes in texture and supreme use of space. Kennedy's 2007 record Identify Yourself was Token's first release. Although Kennedy was well-established by this point, that inaugural step taken together, with Token as a newcomer, began the much-needed growth of the label in a period of time when techno music yearned painfully for a refresh. This was the beginning of a close relationship between artist and label that has remained fruitful through the 11 years of Token's existence. Kennedy is now long-recognized as an integral contributor to Token's output; the label is the indisputable natural home for his sixth album, and in turn he continues to play his part in advancing Token's evolving sound with this release. Strata expands conceptually on the idea of planetary layers alluded to in Magma/Mantle, released in February 2018 (TOKEN 079EP). The album progresses through levels of ornate drama, opening with "Clarion Call (Return to Nothing)", a full-length refix of the celebrated introduction from Kennedy's 2015 release of the same name (TOKEN 058EP), showing off the best of his melodic manipulation and creativity in sound design. This delicate grace is cut through spectacularly by the jaggedness of the approaching textures of "Trapezoid", while the elegant and icy beauty of "Stillness Expanded" is impacted by the noisy and epic "Reminiscence", which grand and almost clerical in its resounding majesty. "Shudder" grounds the record in restrained grit and provides functionality, while the opening fanfare of "Breaking Point" advances yet another degree of energy. The record's built-up intensity is broken at its conclusion by the sleepy, acid-tinged "Oblivion" -- one that bumps along with a drowsy breakbeat and invites the mind to wander. With Strata, Kennedy proves once again that his reserves of passion, skill, and potency are far from depleted; that there is yet more to be discovered in the depths of his imagination.

VA Spider-Jazz: KPM Cues Used In The Amazing Animated Series LP
Subtitled: ... That We Are Not Allowed To Mention For Legal Reasons. Rare and brilliant music as used in the late 1960s amazing animated series we are not allowed to mention for legal reasons. And the same music was used in all the NFL clip shoes throughout the '60s and '70s too. Way back in 1967, an animated superhero cartoon was released into the world. It was created by Grantray-Lawrence Animation and was based on a web-spinning, crime fighting blue-and-red dressed character that had originated in 1962, through Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. This amazing series ran on ABC TV in the USA, then Canada, then a few years, it ran in the UK. The series was notoriously low budget. After Series One the company Grantray-Lawrence went bankrupt, so the amazing spider series was taken on by producer Steve Krantz. He brought in new talent, including animation director Ralph Bakshi who later went on to turn a Robert Crumb strip cartoon into the feature Fritz The Cat (1972). Krantz also slashed the already cripplingly small spider budget and brought in the idea of using economic library music. Here, thanks possibly to an independent sync agent production turned to the KPM catalog. This was one of the few really established library catalogs around at the time with a modern edge; it was full of fabulous, modern dramatic music tracks -- often all on the same LP. But more importantly all the tracks were far longer than the one-minute musical cuts that many of the fledgling USA library companies were issuing at the time. Krantz produced two amazing spider series, and both were smothered with KPM music. In fact barely a spider second goes by without music playing in either the background or foreground. For many enthusiasts this really is formative music -- a junior foray into hip swinging crime jazz and esoteric musical grooviness. So, what features on this Spider-Jazz LP? Well it's music from the amazing TV series, but, not music from Series One. No, but it is all from Series Two and Series Three. From looking at archival cue sheets, over 50 tracks from various early KPM 1000 series albums were used across the episodes. It's all distilled down into one exciting and enthralling LP. Features Syd Dale, Johnny Hawksworth, Bill Martin/Phil Coulter, David Lindup, Johnny Pearson, Keith Mansfield, and Alan Hawkshaw.

FUKUI, RYO Scenery CD
We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) presents its first release, the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's highly sought-after masterpiece Scenery, originally released in 1976. Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous, and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence, and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have. The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LTD-LP) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing two live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come. Sourced from the original masters. CD comes in digipack.

FUKUI, RYO Mellow Dream CD
We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) present the official reissue of criminally overlooked Japanese jazz gem Mellow Dream by Hokkaido pianist wunderkind Ryo Fukui, originally released in 1977. Released in conjunction with the its legendary predecessor 1976's Scenery (WRJ 001CD/LTD-LP). Firmly standing on the foundation he laid down with Scenery, Ryo Fukui continues his exploration of modal, bop, and cool jazz sounds with meticulous grace and absolute mastery. As its title suggests, Mellow Dream ventures into slightly mellower, more soulful, and sometimes more contemplative territories (the Bill Evans-reminiscent "Mellow Dream" and "My Foolish Heart") while still packing the commanding punch Fukui's work is loved for, as heard on the amazingly bombastic "Baron Potato Blues" or the gigantic McCoy Tyner/John Coltrane-influenced "Horizon" which sees each member of the trio -- Satoshi Denpo is on bass and Yoshinori Fukui is on drums -- demonstrating their virtuosity for nine exhilarating minutes. With his sophomore album, Ryo Fukui swings from melancholy to vibrant joy with ease, and reminds you that jazz is best served with a pinch of blues, and displays an immensely rare combination of pure talent, unique personal approach and focused discipline. The man undeniably deserves a spot in the pantheon of all-time great jazz pianists. After releasing the outstanding Scenery and Mellow Dream back-to-back, Ryo Fukui worked on developing his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui), and even releasing two live albums. Robin and Simon Lee, aka Faze Action, were championing disco and all its Afro off-shoots back in the mid '90s when it certainly wasn't the latest trend to do so. "By the mid-90s we were heavily into disco. Fueled by radio shows from the likes of Norman Jay as well as conversations with customers in the record store where I worked, who were all super obsessed, we would talk disco for hours," remembers Simon Lee. It was however their Turn The Point (1996) and In The Trees (1996) releases on nuphonic records that shaped the Faze Action sound and played a large part in coining the term nu-disco. Fast forward 20+ years and the brothers are still pushing the modern disco sound with their live sets and studio productions as Faze Action. Alongside their studio work they've always been serious record collectors so their selections for this latest Under The Influence album are reflective of their extensive collecting and digging history. As Simon confirms, "searching for and buying old records helps to keep our musical thirst alive and is a constant source of inspiration for both our DJ sets and our original productions." Here they've included tracks taking in Afro, Italo, soul, funk, disco, with many of the tracks costing hundreds if you were able to find the originals. Included in the booklet are extensive track notes from Faze Action highlighting what they know about these records and, where they are super-rare and obscure, what they don't. As always with Z Records compilations, a lot of time and effort has been spent on creating these masters from the original vinyl, cleaning them up, removing all the clicks and pops resulting in the cleanest sounding copy possible. Features Carol Dionne, Space, Mikki, Starz, Leston Paul, Michele Claire, Galaxy, Midway, Songhoi Band, Stylus, Oscar Perry, and Spats. Double-CD version features Bebe Manga , Saraba, Courtial, Errol Knowles, Delight, Phenix Horns Esquire, Disco Circus, Pilgrim Fathers Orchestra, Don Lurio, Space, and Tony Antoniou.
