Clear, 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500. Something Else is the first full-length offering from The Brian Jonestown Massacre in 2018. A self-titled full-length album is to follow in the fall of 2018. This is the 17th full-length release from the band, and the style is less experimental and returns to the traditional sound of the band. In 2017 the band did a brief tour of the US and Mexico City to support the band's 2017 album release, Don't Get Lost (AUK 040CD/LP), a relatively quiet year for the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

LODERBAUER, MAX Brightbird Remixes 12"
Max Loderbauer lends his unique interpretive skills to the master recordings for the Brightbird album (AMAC 715CD, 2018) by João Paulo Esteves Da Silva, Mário Franco, and Samuel Rohrer. With "Trusting Heart/Cosmos", Loderbauer builds up a tactile tension between rhythmic certainty and sharp-angled, de-tuned, and occasionally scrambled instrumentation. For "Noontide", Loderbauer switches to a more focused and streamlined idiom with an uncanny ease, riding along steady waves of sequencer patterning and silvery, resonant shiverings. Reverberating, holographic piano again provides the tonal center here, and the notes ring with a forward-thinking optimism not far removed from classics of the krautrock era.

DIE KRUPPS Volle Kraft Voraus LP
"Die Krupps' second album, released in 1982, is one of those long-lost gems which, had the band not become industrial-metal gods, would probably be better known worldwide as a proto-EBM masterpiece. That the record includes both 'Wahre Arbeit, wahrer Lohn' and 'Goldfinger' is enough proof of its stake as a precursor to the sounds of bands like Nitzer Ebb, who's demo came out the year after, but with such a wide-ranging experimental, industrial, and heavy metal history, it's easy to forget just exactly how deep Die Krupps' roots go. Despite its iconic and influential status, Volle Kraft Voraus has never been reissued on vinyl since its first pressing by Warner in 1982. The first CD version hit in the '90s and a deluxe 2CD reissue came out 10 years ago, but the all-important vinyl reissue never saw the light of day, until, of course, now. Artoffact Records presents a wonderful reissue edition of Volle Kraft Voraus, on both black or collector's pink vinyl, with remastered audio and restored cover art."

PARKER, WILLIAM Voices Fall From The Sky 3CD BOX
"Currently deep into his 5th exceptionally active decade as an essential jazz artist, William Parker needs no introduction. However, one of the intrinsic aspects of his oeuvre that bears repeated mention is the vast range thereof. From era-defining statements of free music to soul-jazz organ quartet; from his seamless incorporation of indigenous folk forms to his exhilarating work for jazz orchestra; from the joyous accessibility of his Quartet to his nuanced scoring for dance and film. And this new work! A treasure box abounding with gems, Voices Fall From The Sky is an expansive 3CD Box Set comprising three distinct and complementary albums whose focus is on the voice: the singers, 17 of whom are featured herein -&- the songs, all composed (and produced) by William Parker. Half of the material are brand new recordings and half are Parker-curated selections of previously released material either long unavailable or presented in new form. Accompaniment on these 34 pieces ranges as widely as the voices, from duet to large ensemble. A multitude of approaches are employed: art song to operatic, pop sensibilities to gospel, heart-stopping ballads to dance numbers, silence to exuberance. The lyrical content expresses love of nature and its vital importance to a whole life, compassion, anti-oppression, anti-violence of any kind, praise of the creative spirit, and, Love. These themes are foundational in all of Parker's work; the forefront spotlight through a multitude of expressive voices makes them that much more salient. Album/CD1 features all-new work predominately recorded & mixed during December 2017 and January 2018. Featured singers: Timna Comedi - Morley Shanti Kamen - Amirtha Kidambi - Kyoko Kitamura - Bernardo Palombo - Omar Payano - Jean Carla Rodea - Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez - Fay Victor - Andrea Wolper. Accompanists: Karen Borca - Angelo Branford - Rob Brown - Gerald Cleaver - Jean Cook - Jason Kao Hwang - Masahiko Kono - William Parker - Dave Sewelson - Heru Shabaka-Ra - Steve Swell - Dario Acosta Teich - Eri Yamamoto. Album/CD2 is comprised of duets and focuses on three singers with whom Parker has had decades-long creative relationships with. Vintage recordings with Ellen Christi and Lisa Sokolov from the early 1990s which have been unavailable for far too long are here re-contextualized together with more recent work with Leena Conquest. Accompanists: Yuko Fujiyama - Cooper-Moore - William Parker - Eri Yamamoto. Album/CD3 presents the voice within large ensemble and features new iterations of previously released work together with a brand-new suite/recording entitled 'The Blinking of the Ear', performed by mezzo-soprano opera singer AnnMarie Sandy. The previously released work features the singers Ernie Odoom, Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay and Leena Conquest. Accompaniment is by four very different versions of the William Parker Orchestra, and his Double Quartet. The one exception is the brand-new suite, which features Eri Yamamoto: piano and Leonid Galaganov: drums, although how they and AnnMarie Sandy fill the silence is practically orchestral."

THEE LAKESIDERS Si Me Faltaras Tu/Parachute 7"
"Thee Lakesiders are a duo out of Los Angeles comprised of Marie and Necalli who we were introduced to by our friend El Oms. He thought it would be great to get them out here to NY and into the studio with El Michels. Turns out, he was very right. They spent two days in The Diamond Mine with The Shacks as their backing band and Leon producing and writing with them and cut three songs. Two of which are here on this nice two sider of a 45. Side A 'Si Me Faltaras Tu' is worked up into something of a Latin Psych number, it's a cover of Los Terricolas's tune they cut in 1973 redone with some more muscle. Ben's driving beat and Max's guitar work set the stage for Marie to showcase the powerful side of her voice. Side B 'Parachute' finds them in one of their favorite styles, a dreamy ballad that floats over guitar chanks, brush hits, and vibraphone rolls. This time Marie shows us a different side of her range, her beautiful and lush vocals ride perfectly in the pocket making for a gorgeous b side that can ride right alongside the oldies."

SUNNY & THE SUNLINERS The One Who's Hurting You Is/Should I Take You Home (Original Version) 7"
"Another stone classic 45 from the legendary Sunny & the Sunliners. Following up on the compilation project and full-length reissues we have done, we keep on pressing up some must-haves from his amazing catalog of music. Diehard fans will love to see this one. The A Side is 'The One Who's Hurting Is You' which was never on an album and the original 45 is pretty tough to find, and pretty expensive when you do, to put it mildly... A killer tune that starts out with Rudy Palacios signature guitar riff, dropping into the haunting back ground vocals and met with Sunny's lead riding the line between gruff and sweet. Sunny lays down the law and tells it as fact, 'there's one thing that's for certain, I won't be doing the hurting. The one who's hurting is you...' The B Side, another non album cut, and one of the hardest 45s from Sunny to come across, is the original recording of 'Should I Take You Home'. Originally released on Sunny's Key-Loc label, this is the first version, later in life they remixed it to license it to another label making it brighter and more punchy. This is the lo-fi, the gritty, the original mix, one we are sure fans are going to be happy to finally get a copy of. Another killer two-sider, another Big Crown Sureshot."

EL MICHELS AFFAIR Unathi/Zaharila 7"
"El Michels Affair returns with a new 45 that is simultaneously a new direction and the signature sound he is known for. This time EMA dips their toes into the world of Bollywood Funk and recruits Piya Malik of 79.5 for vocal duties. He has crafted yet another two sider of heavy duty shit. It also comes in a gorgeous picture sleeve courtesy of Chicago's Deadly Prey gallery. From the start of side A, 'Unathi' reels the listener in and keeps them through a journey of psychedelic arrangements, unexpected detours, and relentless rhythm. El Michels again showing the performance and production prowess that has spawned not only bands, but also some independent record labels. Lyrically, 'Unathi' is a song about progress, a vociferous call to arms urging people to come together and work collectively to achieve it. Side B, 'Zaharila', is cinematic, dynamic, and an almost visual number as if it were the score to a film that's never existed. Bent guitar notes and blaring horn stabs ride the peaks and valleys of this epic tale about poisonous whispers that destroy a beautiful love affair. Starting slow and calm with Piya's ethereal melodies floating atop, the song eventually becomes poisoned, panicked, and frantic by the final note."

BEBEY, FRANCIS African Electronic Music 1975-1982 2LP
2018 repress; Double LP version. Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey is truly one of a kind. He entered the music scene with his African compositions for classical guitar. He gave recitals while pursuing a career in journalism and then as an international civil servant. The same creative impulse also led him to write pop songs, some of which (based on novels he had written) became big hits in Africa and in the French-speaking world. But few people know that in the '70s, Francis Bebey delved into electronic music. The first electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines offered him new possibilities of totally controlling his compositions. He embraced the technique of "sound on sound" recording (recording several tracks, sequentially juxtaposed on the same tape). This new stage in his musical career included the production of several records (Savannah Georgia, New Track, Haiti), rarities both for their creative explorations as well as their manifestations on vinyl. This was a particularly rich period for him, as he tested the limitless possibilities of the medium, and made use of surprising and novel instruments. Incredible sounds -- in the literal sense of the word -- would soon appear on the planet Bebey. Full-color printed innersleeves with notes in English and French.

HELDON Third (It's Always Rock 'N' Roll) 2LP
Double LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's third album Third (It's Always Rock 'N' Roll), originally released on Disjuncta in 1975. Third album from the French space-rock electro combo masterminded by Richard Pinhas. Heldon's darkest work lays another stone in their sonic mosaic: synths, drones, fuzz, and trippy improvisations. There's something wicked happening on Heldon's third album It's Always Rock And Roll. Richard Pinhas's essential attack of searing guitar and space-bound synthesizer didn't change radically after the first two Heldon albums, 1974's Electronique Guerilla (BB 280CD/LP) and 1975's Allez-Teia (BB 281CD/LP). But there's dark energy coursing through this double album, a chilly aura that makes even the quietest pieces shiver with tension. "At this time, I tried to turn Heldon into a darker band," Pinhas admits. "But dark is not negative to me." The darkness of It's Always Rock And Roll is more about exploring what's hidden and overturning convention -- about diving beneath bright surfaces to find something more mysterious. If It's Always Rock And Roll stands up in Heldon's catalog, perhaps it's due to expansion -- both in the sense of big ideas and lengthy durations. Most tracks last over seven minutes, and two are side-covering epics. "I think the length of a track is part of the creation of the track," says Pinhas. "There are imperatives. You can do something very complex with a lot of events in four minutes, and then some other things need to be done very slowly. You have to do the length that it demands." "We recorded this after having met with Philip K. Dick in California for two days," recalls Pinhas. "It was such an event for a 23-year old; he was to me one of the last real prophets. We talked about Jung, we talked about a lot of things. Maybe this encounter gave birth to all of Heldon Third." So the sci-fi master spawned a dark audio creation to rival his own work. Like the Heldon albums that precede it, It's Always Rock And Roll is undoubtedly Pinhas' baby. But its depth-probing sounds earned it a godfather, too. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

HELDON Agneta Nilsson (Heldon IV) LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's fourth album Agneta Nilsson, originally released on Urus Records in 1976. Agneta Nilsson opens with a mind-paralyzing track that proves stillness can have a pulse. "Perspective I" spends ten minutes poring through tectonic layers of heavy sound, piling everything so thick that the song becomes like quicksand for your brain. It's one of the most daunting works in the Heldon catalog, made all the more impressive by how simple it is. It's just sounds put together and turned up. It's the vital alchemy of Richard Pinhas's wizardry, deployed with maximum force. As on other early Heldon albums, the rest of Agneta Nilsson is diverse in a nearly contrarian way. Each track refuses to mimic its predecessor in a way that feels rebellious, like a child running away from home. This is true despite the fact that three of the four pieces are actually chapters of "Perspective", partners in a thematic whole. "Each one is a different point of view on the same field," explains Pinhas. "Different parts, different arrangements, but with a full concept in place." It's not easy to divine that concept in these pieces, but their sibling nature has a subconscious effect. The album-closing "Perspective IV" is one of Pinhas's most unabashedly proto-prog guitar-hero epics, boosted by a technical upgrade. "This was the first album where I had enough money to rent one or two days in a real studio to do the drumming," says Pinhas. "After that we had real budgets for studio time. That all changed with and after Agneta Nilsson -- that was a good turn." Pinhas parlayed Heldon's change of direction into three more adventurous albums in the '70s, and simultaneously spurred himself toward a solo career that continues to prod and probe the sonic universe today, over 40 years since he began. It would be wrong to say this album was the big bang of this singular career; the seeds of were planted years before, and every work Pinhas has been involved with sprouts more sounds and ideas that can grow into their own branches. But Agneta Nilsson is one of the most convincing pieces of evidence that Pinhas is incapable of sitting still. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

FALL, THE Levitate (Expanded Edition) 2CD
"Levitate is the Fall's 19th album originally released in 1997 on Artful Records. It has been out of print for a number of years now and is much sought after by fans. It's the last album to feature two long-time Fall members, drummer Karl Burns and bass player Steve Hanley (whose playing was once described by Smith as the defining element of the group's music). The album was initially going to be produced by Keir Stewart and Simon Spencer (who previously collaborated with Smith under the moniker D.O.S.E. on the 1995 single 'Plug Myself In'). Most of the recordings took place at Edwyn Collins' studio in West Hampstead. However, Stewart and Spencer soon fell out with Smith over payments and left after a week, taking most of the tapes with them. The only tracks from these sessions to make the album were '4½ Inch' (allegedly edited out of samples of a rehearsal recording), 'Spencer', later re-dubbed by Smith as 'Spencer Must Die', and 'The Quartet of Doc Shanley'. This re-issue has been re-mastered by long term Fall engineer Andy Pearce and features new sleeve notes by Daryl Easlea."

"Canto" is more driving, with crisp drums and synth stabs all getting you into a groove. "Forte" drops into techno mood with powerful kicks and busy snares then "Complet" re-sets with two minutes of blissful flute lead ambience that is utterly calming. TRICCA, EMMA St Peter CD
In life and music, Emma Tricca is an explorer. Just as ?Davey Graham set sail for Morocco and ?Vashti Bunyan for the Outer Hebrides in search of their elusive ?muse, Rome-raised singer-songwriter Tricca has journeyed to London, New York, Texas, and further afield to seek the heart of her own music. Tricca's new album St Peter -- created with a cast of supporting artists including global icon ?Judy Collins, ?Sonic Youth's ?Steve Shelley, and Dream Syndicate guitarist Jason Victor -- takes a bracing plunge into the unknown, leaving the folksinger tag far behind with a rolling collection of reverie-inducing raw diamonds. Tricca released her first melancholic masterpiece, 2009's crystalline long-player Minor White on Bird Records (BMS 024CD), an offshoot of Finders Keepers run by husband and wife team ?Jane Weaver and ?Andy Votel. Five years later Tricca released Relic (2014), an album even more poised and precise than its predecessor. A collaboration with longtime friend and guitar wizard Jason McNiff led to 2017's sparkling Southern Star EP (EDDA 043CD/LP), while a song on the soundtrack of Patrick Stewart-starring US indie film Match (2014) raised her profile. Recorded near-live at Echo Canyon West in Hoboken, St Peter draws on crunchy country rock, homespun psychedelia, Morricone soundtracks, New York underground grit, and English folk grandeur to weave a wholly unique and surprising spell. More musical guests soon joined the party -- gruff songwriting hero ?Howe Gelb put in a brief cameo, while Tricca was able to live out a childhood fantasy by inviting ?Judy Collins to appear on the album's penultimate cut, "Solomon Said". The album is so loaded with texture that is almost feels tangible; a rare record that feels precise and pristine in its executions but never sterile or lifeless. Electric guitars fizz away like a controlled electricity, Tricca's guitar playing flows gracefully at the core with her vocals existing in the perfect state between slight rasp and caramel-smoothness. Shelley's drumming and percussion gives a steady heartbeat to the record which is further brought to life by a variety of deft instrumentation, including piano, bass, cello, violin, glockenspiel, and of course the variety of guest backing vocalists. Whilst St Peter's deep-seated roots can perhaps be traced to traditional folk music, its finished existence feels far from such a thing -- its ever-flowing essence skipping through genres, tones, paces and rhythms with a gliding grace.

APPLESCAL Harmony EP 12"
Atomnation label-head Applescal crafts out three tracks, all coming from one single studio jam. "Harmony One" is a dubby and bass heavy track with a subtle vocal sample. It steadily builds up towards a more energetic part with synth stabs, heavy snares, and atmospheric pads. "Harmony Two", previously part of an Atomnation sampler, it built around an arpeggio that playfully progresses and intensifies towards the break, where a raw synth is layered on top for the climax. With hard-hitting synth stabs and a rolling bassline "Harmony Three" sets itself apart as the heavier hitter of the three.

DJ RICHARD Dies Irae Xerox CD
Following 2017's Path Of Ruin (DIAL 074EP), DJ Richard returns to Dial with his much-anticipated sophomore LP, Dies Iræ Xerox. Undoubtedly one of the most distinctive and fully-formed electronic producers in recent memory, DJ Richard imprinted the sound of a bubbling US underground with his label, White Material, founded in 2012 alongside Young Male. His first solo LP for Dial, 2015's Grind (DIAL 033CD/LP), found DJ Richard delicately establishing a discipline between his East Coast noise heritage and a physical, emotive tradition of house music, mastered during an extended stay in Berlin. Now firmly settled once more in his hometown of Providence, Dies Iræ Xerox is a personal and uncompromising journey that finds the Rhode Island native in reflective form. In part adapting its title from the Latin hymn "Dies irae", otherwise known as "Day of Wrath", Dies Iræ Xerox melds the physical and psychological aspects of DJ Richard's production ethos in sharper, more widescreen vision than before; the oceanic swells of ambience yet more powerful, and the rigid basslines sharper still. With the chaos of the Berlin club scene an increasingly distant memory, the album is enriched with a contemplative, even brittle tone, as informed by film soundtracks and literature as the pulse of city living. On Dies Iræ Xerox, the artist finds the space to write "the records I really want to play", and each suggests a template for genuine dancefloor transcendence, beginning with the electrifying "Vanguard". The sludgy yet sophisticated crawl of "Tunnel Stalker" sets the tone for the menacing yet somehow melancholy EBM of "In Broad Daylight", while the record draws to a breathless close with the affecting, drum machine lethargy of "Gate Of Roses". Drawing little distinction between his more physically rousing material and searching soundscapes, Dies Iræ Xerox instead finds a passage of catharsis throughout both. "Dissolving World", the album's breathtaking centerpiece, is a choral feature hypnotically overwhelmed by walls of electronic feedback, forging a dramatic link between old ways and new. On the bold and near-beatless "Ancestral Helm" and "Final Mercy", DJ Richard seems to grant both music and raw emotion the ability to simply float in the air, brilliantly, poignantly unresolved. If Grind, inspired by the weathered coastlines of Rhode Island, was a record concerning "the border between civilization and the ocean", then Dies Iræ Xerox is an unapologetic follow-up concerning that between macabre obsessions and fear of death.

DJ RICHARD Dies Irae Xerox 2LP
Double LP version. "This production is a collaborative effort of Jakarta-based DIVISI62 and DISK (Berlin). It features 4 tracks by the constituents of DIVISI62. All artworks were delivered by DIVISI62, the covers were silkscreen-printed in Bandung, Indonesia and the inner sleeves are stamped in Berlin. The approach to rhythm and dramaturgy on all tracks is rather unique and original - and so are the samples used. DIVISI62 draws from the rich musical heritage of Indonesia in terms of rhythm and sound yet the producers are heavily influenced by global club culture and bass-music. This combination adds up for the most intriguing listening experience: Strange virtual spaces mixing with all-too-real ones, creating a hyperreal spatial feel in which musical structures unfold in a highly unpredictable and deeply entrancing way!"

KERRIDGE, SAMUEL The I Is Nothing 12"
In pursuit of hardcore techno ballistics and mutant metal alloys, The I Is Nothing marks five years of Samuel Kerridge releases on Regis' Downwards. Serpentine stinger "Silent Notes" is a roiling combo of EBM drums and divebombing Reese bass, while "Fascination Sustain" strips down to a scudding sort of electro-techno IDM pressure recalling Oberman Knocks or Bitstream's Adapta gear. Isis frontman Aaron Turner infects "Propagates Of Desire" with masochistic lyrics buried deep in Kerridge's matrix of recoiling EBM kicks and Stuka synth drones, then "Actuality Repeats" stretches out in a hollowed sphere of 150bpm electro and spectral gloom.

Legendary ethnomusicologist and field-recording pioneer, Hugh Tracey founded the International Library of African Music (ILAM) in 1954. Today, ILAM preserves thousands of historical recordings and has become the greatest repository of African music in the world. ULLMANN, JAKOB Muntzers Stern, Solo II 2CD
From the liner notes by Hans-Peter Schulz; Translation by Peter Gebert: "... SOLO II: Solo II is part of a group of works with the title Buch der Stille 1 ('Book of Silence 1'). This is a series of solo pieces for flute/oboe da cacchia (solo I), trombone/bassoon (solo II), organ (solo III), low string instrument (solo IV), and piano (solo V), all of which were developed from the same compositional idea; the series is a generalisation of disappearing musics, itself a composition for three winds, two strings and two pianos written between 1989 and 1991. The individual solo-compositions can be performed separately, as well as in all combinations simultaneously. After Jakob Ullman had met John Cage in person on the occasion of a Cage festival organised by the Deutschlandfunk in 1990, this encounter developed into a lengthy and intensive exchange of ideas which had considerable impact on the compositional process that Ullmann was concerned with at the time, specifically of soli I, II and III, finished in 1992. The pieces can therefore be rightly considered as a reflection and result of this exchange of ideas . . . MÜNTZERS STERN (MÜNTZER'S STAR): Between 2014 and 2016 Jakob Ullmann composed the orchestral work steine, feuer, sterne ('stones, fire, stars'). . . . One section among these is the section for a solo bassoon, which may be performed independently under the title 'Müntzers stern'. Thomas Müntzer, born around 1490, was a keen supporter of the Lutheran Reformation. . . . After the battle near Frankenhausen, Müntzer was captured, tortured and eventually beheaded. As a priest, he strove for the renewal of divine service and translated liturgical texts and hymns from Latin to German even before Luther. The title Müntzers stern refers to the Advent hymn Gott heil'ger Schöpfer aller Stern, a translation of the medieval hymn conditor alme siderum done by Müntzer as part of this work. Ullmann spread the melody of the hymn over the total duration of the composition in a very prolonged manner. In the course of this process, the six different tone pitches of the hymn, which are heard either being sung or as an emphasised partial within the bassoon's spectrum, are supplemented by another six tones, played ordinario on the bassoon, those still missing in the twelve-tone space, until the chromatic scale is completely filled in ..."

COMUS First Utterance (Remastered Edition) CD
"Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered and expanded edition of the legendary album First Utterance by Comus. Released in February 1971 on Pye Records' progressive rock label Dawn, First Utterance was a darkly stunning masterpiece by Comus, a group who arguably defy being classified in any genre. Too dark, loud and eccentric to be folk, but too unconventional to be classified as a rock band, the influence of Comus' work extended far beyond their short life. Mikael Akerfeldt of Swedish band Opeth was so enamored with the band that he named Opeth's 1998 album My Arms, Your Hearse from the lyrics of the Comus song 'Drip, Drip'. Featuring a line-up of Glen Goring (6-string Acoustic Guitar, 12 string Acoustic Guitar, Slide & Electric Guitar, Hand Drums & Vocals), Andy Hellaby (Bass), Colin Pearson (Violin & Viola), Roger Wooton (Acoustic Guitar, Lead Vocals) Rob Young (Flute, Oboe & Hand Drums) and Bobbie Watson (Vocals, Percussion), Comus were regular performers at David Bowie's Arts Lab in Beckenham, Kent in 1969. Earning a reputation on the UK college and university live music circuit, Comus signed to Dawn Records in 1970, releasing the album First Utterance and the 'Diana' maxi single in 1971 before falling apart. Their 1971 album later attained a significant cult following and is regarded as one of the most interesting and influential releases on the Dawn label. This expanded and re-mastered reissue includes four bonus tracks taken from the 'Diana' maxi-single, along with the song 'All the Colours of Darkness', recorded during the First Utterance sessions. The booklet restores the original album artwork and features an essay by Malcolm Dome and interviews with band members."

SLEAFORD MODS Bunch Of Kunst Documentary: A Film About Sleaford Mods By Christine Franz / Live At SO36 CD+DVD
Thanks to their sweary rants about modern England, Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have been called "The world's greatest rock 'n' roll band" by Iggy Pop and "the soundtrack to post-Brexit Britain" by the Guardian. Jason Williamson, a former chicken factory worker and father of two, his band mate, beatmaker Andrew Fearn, and their manager Steve Underwood, avant-garde bedroom label owner and former bus driver, have won over fans with their brutally honest lyrics and DIY ethos. Following them on their two-year journey from Sherwood to chart success, award-winning music documentary Bunch Of Kunst tells the story of three guys taking on the music business on their own terms. "This documentary film is the perfect antidote to those sexy, racy, rock'n'roll yawns most bands hide behind. We are indeed, a Bunch Of Kunst." --Jason Williamson, Sleaford Mods. The CD was recorded at SO36 Berlin on June 19th, and features the complete unedited performance, originally released in an edited form as a vinyl LP on Harbinger Sound (HARBUSA 001LP, 2016). Subtitles options on the DVD -- English, Deutsch, Espanol, Francais. NTSC format, region free.

AZAMBUJA & CIA Azambuja & Cia LP
Far Out Recordings present a reissue of Azambuja & Cia's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. In 1975, the prolific and multi-talented Brazilian comedians Chico Anysio and Arnaud Rodrigues recorded an album based on the protagonist of one of their most celebrated TV series. Sporting a dodgy moustache and an equally troubling haircut, Carioca conman Paulo Maurício Azambuja (played by Anysio) would flog his own mother's leg if he could, and his ever-ridiculous scams are inevitably always destined to fail. This soundtrack/musical reimagining of the series combines jazz-funk with samba soul and MPB, with the help of cult Brazilian trio Azymuth, keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami, who arranged the album alongside renowned conductor and composer Jose Menezes, elevates the groovy odd-ball sound to another dimension, with his set up including Fender Rhodes, Arp Strings, Arp Omni, Clavinet, and Hammond organ. Remaining Azymuth members Ivan Conti (drums) and Alex Malheiros (bass) provide the signature Azymuth foundation, and saxophone prodigy Victor Assis Brasil and legendary multi-instrumentalist producer Durval Ferreira also feature. As well as its distinctly comedic character, what makes the music so special is the coming together of traditional samba roots, and Azymuth's ahead-of-its-time psychedelic funk influence. Each side ends with a comedy monolog, complete with live audience laughter, but before that you get seven tracks of weird and wonderfully emotive Brazilian groove music. 180 gram vinyl.

BAIANO & OS NOVOS CAETANOS Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos LP
Far Out Recordings present a reissue of Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos's self-titled album, originally released in 1974. Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos was a band formed by prolific and multi-talented Brazilian comedians Chico Anysio and Arnaud Rodrigues. Satirizing Brazil's tropicalia movement in the 1970s, the duo took a friendly crack at the likes of Caetano Veloso and psychedelic rockers Novos Baianos, with their righteous tropicalista alter-egos "Baiano" and "Paulinho Boca de Profeta" poetically denouncing the dictatorship while simultaneously mocking those who took themselves too seriously. Jazz funk legends Azymuth play backing band with keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami also responsible for the arrangements on the album. Azymuth's free and funky psych sounds combine with accordion, harmonica, brass, and plenty of rural Brazilian rhythms, for a hugely varied album drawing on MPB, funk, and soulful samba rock. The album also features Orlandivo who co-wrote many of the songs, and renowned multi-instrumentalist and producer Durval Ferreira. 180 gram vinyl.

ABRAMS, JOSHUA Excavations 1 LP
"The Chicago-based string genius Joshua Abrams first talked to us about the idea of this album a while back. It took a couple of years to get together, but in a way, it's cool that it's being released in 2018 -- the 50th anniversary of the recording of the first free bass solo LP, Barre Phillips' Journal Violone. Issued by Opus One in the U.S., Music Man in the UK (as Unaccompanied Barre), and Futura in France (as Basse Barre), Phillips' groundbreaking album was a gorgeous and gritty exploration of textures that are usually bound deep inside the creative flow of unit improvisation. Hearing these sonorities explored, at length, without extraneous gabble was revelatory, but not easy to replicate. I could only think of a dozen other LPs of the stuff that have been done in the intervening years (CDs don't count)*. But Abrams is undaunted by such shit. Anyone who has seen him play or listened to him on record knows he has an aggressively wide palette and a fearless drive to explore new regions of sound. The tones on Excavations 1 have a much gnarlier feel than many of the tones Joshua explores inside group dynamics. Almost more like some of the bassists associated with avant garde composition (Bertram Turetzky, Fernando Grillo, etc.), Abrams' work here is about pushing against accepted precepts of melody and rhythm, freeing the bass from its accepted role, and allowing it to scream for real." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 500.* 1974, Alan Silva - Inner Song (Center of the World); 1974, Harry Miller - Children at Play (Ogun); 1975, Kent Carter - Beauvais Cathedral (Emanem); 1976, Henri Texier - Amir (Eurodisc); 1976 - Fernando Grillo - Fluvine (Cramps); 1977, Henry Texier - Varech (Eurodisc); 1978, Dave Holland - Emerald Tears (ECM); 1978, Brother Malachi Favors - Magoustos Natural & Spiritual (AECO); 1980, Roberto Miguel Miranda - The Creator's Musician (Nimbus West); 1985, Joëlle Léandre - ?Sincerely (Plainisphare); 1986, Miroslav Vitous - Emergence (ECM); 1988, Klaus Koch - Basse Partout (Creative Works).

PAPA LORD GOD The Sheik Of Downfall Creek LP
"Debut LP by Brisbane's brilliant Greg Hilleard, who we first heard when he was part of the incredible Lost Domain. The Sheik is a solo album that makes us think of a summit between the Gibson Bros and Parachute-era Eugene Chadbourne (or something equally far-fetched). Pretty amazing by any yardstick. Anyway, Greg had a few words he wanted to share." --Byron Coley, 2018Here they are: Celebrating 200 years of rock n roll. Former "leader" of Brisbane's premier room-clearers Strontium Dog (apologies to PORK), whose one and only record is terrible beyond belief (all surviving members agree). Shortly after the timely demise of SD, Gregory was asked to sit in with the Invisible Empire -- Brisbane (possibly Australia)'s, number one improv juke jumpers. John Henry decided being named after a dodgy pope was not very RnR and promptly renamed him Papa Lord God (apologies to the deceased). Evidence of the first meeting of minds is on the sadly unavailable Jeezly Fishcakes cassette. The Grubbage album was also recorded around this time. At some point one of the other more urbane members suggested that being named after the KKK (smash the invisible empire) wasn't maybe the best idea for impressing foreign investors and the name was changed to the Lost Domain. For 20 glorious years we free rocked the bars and verandahs of Brisbane to little or no response. Then Dave died. The guru, teacher, leader and philosopher (pre-war RnR division) was no more. This didn't sit well with Papa. Working in a gang made for light lifting and, being naturally work-shy, a solo thing wasn't really on the cards. Depression, madness and homelessness ensued. A period of semi-Calvinist sobriety followed (not recommended). Slowly muscles were stretched and strings were bent. A strong urge to avoid "tuneage" meant there would be no "writing". Freedom was the score and sound the means. Here is the first evidence for the prosecution/defense: Acoustic tracks recorded mostly first thing in the morning, in bed (Hello Furry Lewis!). Electric guitars recorded at the SweatLodge. Freedom yelps from the creek. Wordless protest. Dig in...

BIG BLOOD Operate Spaceship Earth Properly CD
"Our last Big Blood release was the idiosyncratic Ant Farm, Colleen and Caleb's collaboration with the late composer Elliott Schwartz, which presented music designed for a museum installation. With Operate Spaceship Earth Properly, Big Blood return to the vast universe of strangeness they explore inside their own skin. Now fully incorporating the vocals and guitar of their daughter Quinnisa (previously a 'secret weapon' unveiled mostly at live shows, as the Dictators once did with Handsome Dick Manitoba), Big Blood sound nutsier and wilder than ever. Spaceship Earth is a massively psychedelic investigation of science fiction, science fact and the mythic spot where they reconcile. Specifically referring to the work of writers such as Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin and Buckminster Fuller, the music mixes the thunder of riff-thuggery with vocals beamed in from planet Comus and beat-slaps equally indebted to the Purple Revolutionary and the Neue Deutsche Welle. The combination is head-spinning and gloriously original but will be immediately identifiable as Big Blood by anyone who knows the band's music. COLON, WILLIE Wanted By The FBI: The Big Break - La Gran Fuga LP
"The Big Break is a masterpiece of Latin music, the kind of formidable artistic statement that established the Fania label as a cultural icon -- going beyond the parameters of a company specializing in crowd pleasing dance music. Needless to say, this is still a great party album, filled with dance friendly classics such as 'Barrunto' and 'Abuelita'. At the same time, it crystallizes the Colón/Lavoé aesthetic that the duo had been developing on previous albums (The Big Break was Colón's sixth release on the Fania label.) This session is a roller coaster of intensity -- a symphony of contrasting flavors, colors and feelings. Perhaps the one moment that best encapsulates the transcendental qualities of this collection is the bridge of 'Panameña' -- the moment when the tune stops on its tracks, Lavoé introduces la salsa de Puerto Rico, el aguinaldo (Puerto Rico's own salsa, the aguinaldo) and all hell breaks loose thanks to Colón's roaring trombone and the spidery piano lines courtesy of the maestro Profesor Joe Torres. The resulting effect is nothing less of apocalyptic. Of the many brilliant LP covers that graphic designer Izzy Sanabria designed for Fania, The Big Break may be the most notorious one. The art capitalized on Colón's 'Malo' image (he was initially called El Malo because the older musicians thought he was a poor trombone player, not a bad kid -- Willie then decided to use the gangster archetype as a gimmick.) This time, Sanabria flew with the idea and devised a cover that replicated a Wanted by the FBI poster. Using the project's limited budget to his advantage, the designer included a cheap photo of Colón and random fingerprints to create a realistic looking poster. After its release, the company was contacted by the real FBI, which requested that the 'Wanted by FBI' text be removed from the cover. Listening to these eight, timeless tracks decades after their original release, the music compels you to ask: how could two young men in their '20 have so much to say? How did they manage to record an album of such depth and beauty? It may be advisable to stop pondering such heady issues and enjoy the music instead."

AMMAR 808 Maghreb United CD
Deep TR-808 bass meets pan-Maghreb beats, timeless voices, and futurist visions. AMMAR 808 was the sonic mastermind behind the Tunisian sensation: Bargou 08. On his debut release, Maghreb United, featuring the singers Mehdi Nassouli (Morocco), Sofiane Saidi (Algeria), and Cheb Hassen Tej (Tunisia), he connects the two to offer a radical, electronic reinvention of ancient North African music. AMMAR 808 started the project in 2017, after working with the lauded Bargou 08, searching for something to link the sense of what has been with what will be. "I'm trying to weave threads from folklore and mythology into futurism. And I'm not necessarily projecting a positive image; from all we can see, things aren't going in the right direction. What I hope is that it will raise an alarm." Yet there's also plenty of hope here. With singers from Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, songs from the Targ, Gnawa, and Raï histories, and a TR-808 alongside a distorted gumbri (Nassouli), gasba flute, and zokra bagpipes (Lassaed Bougalmi), this is an album that reaches out to encompass the entire Maghreb area of North Africa. "In the past the Maghreb was one huge region, yet very diverse within its borders. But today, the world keeps every person separated. The album isn't so much about a united Maghrebi region, but how we can connect while observing our differences -- our differences are also our connection -- and using them to unify as humans." The choice of songs was also very deliberate for AMMAR 808, with nine of the ten cuts taken from the deep tradition. The idea for Maghreb United (which is also the name for the album's performing group) has long been burning in AMMAR 808, but it burst into flame after the musician and producer met all the singers on his regular trips in the region, before returning home to start building the tracks. The deep, rumbling growl of the gumbri, the dry, airy tenderness of the gasba, and the softly slithering zokra give a powerful North African root to the music, a thread that spins back through centuries. And the singers burn with fire and grace and passion.

The deep, rumbling growl of the gumbri, the dry, airy tenderness of the gasba, and the softly slithering zokra give a powerful North African root to the music, a thread that spins back through centuries. And the singers burn with fire and grace and passion.

ESTARDY, BERNARD Fragments D'une Empreinte Magnetique LP
After a series of mythic reissues, (Pole, Marie Et Les Garçons, etc.) Gonzaï Records confronts a French production legend: Bernard Estardy. The album Fragments D'une Empreinte Magnétique is a collection of 12 originals, rare and collectable songs, composed and recorded by the producer between 1966 and the year of his passing, 2006. If you don't know him by his real name, you might know him under the nickname: "The Giant". Whether you're aware of it or not you've certainly heard his music, leaving behind him over 1,500 songs, some of which have made history. Bernard Estardy started by playing in Parisian jazz clubs as a young pianist backing great acts such as Bill Coleman or Nancy Sinatra. After becoming an expert on the keys, his next adventure was playing the organ for Nino Ferrer and creating the riffs which are known today as classics. You've guessed it, behind the songs "Mirza" or "Les Cornichons"; it's Bernard. Nino Ferrer being like a volcano, always on the edge about to blow, Estardy co-founded the CBE Studio in 1969 -- one of Paris's legendary studios. There, the most popular songs and albums of the French repertoire were recorded from François Hardy's "Comment Te Dire Adieu" to Manset's "La Mort d'Orion", even Bert Jansch or Lee Hazlewood visited the studio. CBE has been the home of many great acts from Johnny Hallyday to Serge Gainsbourg, and one way or the another, the very man behind the mixing desk is responsible for more than 400 million record sales all over the world. Impressive, right? As a tinkerer of tunes for many others, he forgot to sell his own talent. He secretly recorded two albums and made more than a hundred instrumentals, all of which were kept in storage for years. Until now. His style? A mix of post-jerk, library music and cosmic disco. Fragments D'une Empreinte Magnétique reveals the story of his mysterious life: a collection of originals songs, some of them forgotten, but they all have the The Giant's signature sound.

JASSS Weightless 2LP
2018 repress. Jasss makes her head and body-turning album debut with Weightless, an absorbingly stark and spiky set of industro-dub concerns, riddled with heavy inspiration from African rhythms, jazz and concrète electronics. After a trio of acclaimed 12"s for Berlin's Mannequin and Amir Alexander's Annunaki Cartel since 2016, iDEAL Recordings now give Jasss room to consolidate and expand her grizzled dancefloor structures to a full-length episode that brutally dovetails with Joachim Nordwall's unforgiving but compelling take on contemporary noise and industrial musics. Very much an antecedent of Spanish industrialists, such as Diseño Corbusier, Xeerox/Krishna Goineau, or Mecanica Popular/Randomize, Jasss firmly builds on that heritage with a uniquely pensive balance of percussive suss, synthetic bite, and reverberating spatial dynamics that makes her music heavy-as-sin and deliciously deft with it, patently forgoing industrial music's angry guy glare in favor of far more feminine and Latinate pressure systems. She does so with an aching, puckered patience in the opener, "Every Single Fish In The Pond", escalating from a lone cymbal motif and location recordings to a pulsating darkroom boldness by the end of an incendiary scene-setter, before really getting her fangs in with the clenched but driving EBM torque of "Oral Couture", recalling a spiked Toresch or CTI hovering at the darkroom's entrance. From here on in a dream sequence of events take place, morphing from febrile, hash-induced triplet pirouettes in "Danza" through the martial free jazz/industrial cut-up of "Cotton For Lunch", to a definitive apex of sprung, stepping cyber-goth in "Weightless", with a pause for Alberich-like reflection on "Theo Goes Away", but the voodoo rises once again with the druggy swagger of "Instantaneous Transmission Of Information", and her stoic, blunt-edged mauler, "To Eat With Dirty Hands". It's rare to hear industrial music done with such variation and individual distinction as "Weightless", making it shine in a field so often associated with greyscale and monotone signatures. RIYL: Christoph De Babalon, Klinik, Toresch, Mecanica Popular, CTI. Artwork by Pan Daijing. Master and cut by Matt Colton. Comes in a gatefold jacket; Edition of 600.

BYRNE, NADINE Dreaming Remembering LP
Ectoplasm Girls' Nadine Byrne lures listeners into woozy mental states on Dreaming Remembering, her soundtrack to a short film of the same name, providing a solo follow-up to A Different Gesture: Collected Soundtracks 2011-2012 (2014), and her first outing since Ectoplasm Girls' New Feeling Come (2016), which were both issued by Joachim Nordwall's ever-adventurous iDEAL Recordings. One of three Stockholm-based Byrne sisters along with Tanya, her partner in Ectoplasm Girls, and Ambra, who has recently provided EG's live visuals, Nadine Byrne operates at the intersection of intuitive sonic and visual arts. Where Ectoplasm Girls tend to a bewitched sort of industrial experimentation, Nadine's personal work is defined in terms of its relative, mutable electronic sleight of hand, with vocals handled by the mysterious Sarah Kim. As the title connotes, Dreaming Remembering is about intimate reflection and the space between awareness and uncertainty of recollection. In that noumenal gooch, Nadine works an incredible freeform, uncluttered sound best resembling the illusive nature of dreams and their elusive memory. In her mind and out of her machines, they feel out a spectrum ranging from mirage-like vignettes like "Atlas" through to curdled proto-techno buzzes and grubby drone intonations with wickedly possessed vocals. Extracted from the visuals, they patently work well as a dissociated body of work in their own right, with a cumulative effect that mesmerizes and unsettles throughout the album, bringing you out at the other end in a way that feels like you've just walked out of a darkened cinema into dusk, with the strange effect of the preceding visuals and a story you can't untangle still lingering like a pleasurably strange mental fug that's hard to shake or decipher. Singular sound and vision somewhere between Laurie Anderson, James Ferraro, and Ryan Trecartin. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 500.

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS A Place to Bury Strangers LP
2018 repress; Pressed on glow-in-the-dark vinyl. Big Bill's Blues Vinyl version of the A Place To Bury Strangers' break-out self-titled release, originally released on CD in 2007. A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called "the loudest band in New York." This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully-cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately loud volume. While there are obvious reference points: Pornography-era Cure, early Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and pre-1990s Jesus And Mary Chain, the sound is all their own. On its original release, A Place to Bury Strangers was named "Best New Music" by Pitchfork, who awarded the album an 8.4 rating.

WEEED This LP
Weeed's debut for Important Records, titled This, has an expansive musical vision and an astonishingly mature sound from a young band. Despite their relatively young ages Weeed has been together for ten years -- a fact made apparent by the fluidity and unity of their sound. Labels such as stoner/psych/jam/alt/krautrock fall short as the band draws from a deeper pool of inspiration including gnawa, traditional folk, jazz, minimalist orchestras, overtone singing, and much more. This is the product of both a desire to make such influences more apparent as well as a desire to explore the boundaries of the members' abilities to connect with each other; to become, in essence, one mind. Though the skeleton of the album was written during practices, the dynamics and fullness of each song were often reconnoitered and spawned through the improvisations which occurred during live settings and tours. The idea was discovery through the act of being present, and This was the result. Sonically, This is an outgrowth of their last release, Meta (2017), which saw the band beginning to experiment with ambient and vocal looping, flutes, synthesizers. Those explorations are present here, as is the notable (and permanent) addition of a second drummer, which is defined through the mixtures of tight syncopations and pulsing polyrhythms present in these songs. Recorded and produced at Bear Creek studio in Woodinville, WA, This marks a shift in sound that will only lead to further exploration into new musical territory."These guys have a chemistry that allows them to oscillate between highly structured rock songs and psychedelic free-form jams without and inhibitions." --More Fuzz"The search for Seattle's freakiest psych-rock band may be over." --Dave Segal, The Stranger

CLARKE, JOHNNY Don't Stay Out Late CD
Kingston Sounds present a reissue of Johnny Clarke's Don't Stay Out Late, originally released in 1977. Johnny Clarke stands tall as one of the great vocalists that ruled the Jamaican reggae scene from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s dancehall period. This re-issue of his Don't Stay Out Late set shows his versatility to sing any song that was put in front of him and make it his own. Under producer Bunny "Striker" Lee's guidance, Mr. Clarke produced a run of singles and albums few could match. Johnny Clarke (b 1955, Jamaica, West Indies) cut his first record "God Made The Sea And Sun" after winning a local singing contest in the Bull Bay area of Jamaica. Although the single was not a hit, it led to two follow up tracks for producer Rupie Edwards, "Everyday Wandering" and "Julie" that fared much better, both on the island and overseas in England and Canada. These tracks also brought the singer to the attention of producer Bunny Lee and a working relationship that would go on to produce a prolific catalog of music. Johnny Clarke's Dread Conscious/Love Song style were to grace many hits around this time in 1974. There were such tunes as "None Shall Escape The Judgement", "Move Out Of Babylon", "Rock With Me Baby", "Enter The Gates With Praise" to name but a few. All new songs added to a host of cover tunes, recommended by Bunny Lee, many taken from singer John Holt's catalog, that suited Clarke's vocal style. The rhythms were cut at various studios around the Island. Randy's Studio 17, Channel I, Treasure Isle, Dynamic Sounds, and Harry J's by a group of musicians loosely called The Aggravators and voiced King Tubby's studio. All great tracks backed by great rhythms, cut by Johnny Clarke with a voice that few could equal. CD version includes four bonus tracks.

HULA Murmur CD
"Hula were founded in Sheffield in 1981. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fish and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They Must Be Russians, Clock DVA, The Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt, Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) and Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko), and after the replacement of Alan Fish by Nort (both drummed for the Cabs), Hula recorded the impressive album Murmur. Ingredients like cut ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals were blended together into a unique white funky sound. Murmur was the band's second album and came out on Red Rhino in 1984. This was also the time of Hula's great singles -- 'Fever Car', 'Get the Habit' and 'Walk on Stalks of Shattered Glass' were all released around that time. They are all added to the album as bonus tracks here making this CD about twice as long as the original vinyl album. Remastered by Attrition's Martin Bowes and the band's own Nort. BORATTO, GUI Pentagram 2LP
Double LP version. Gui Boratto's breakthrough full-length debut Chromophobia was released in 2007 (KOMP 056CD/KOM 152LP). As to what its title suggests, he shook up the techno game with a contrast of lushly colored minimal grooves and melody. Four albums in and countless EPs and remixes under his belt, the Brazilian producer's unique savoir-faire in carving out a functional album out of diversely routed singles and features is back at it on his fifth studio album, Pentagram. Here Gui Boratto lays down a nuanced 12-track narrative that reinvigorates his signature sound into a refreshingly different perspective that feels all too familiar -- including the return of "Beautiful Life" vocalist (and Gui Boratto's wife) Luciana Villanova on the single "Overload". Through his signature kaleidoscopic approach, Boratto delivers an album built as a far-reaching hub-and-spoke system, broadly inclusive as can be. From the opening cut, "The Walker" -- hot on the trail of Tears For Fears Elemental (1993), one of Boratto's "favourite 80's bands" -- to the hi-NRG euphoria of "Forgotten" and its pounding tech alter ego "Forgive Me". "I was going into two different directions", Boratto says; "the typical 'indie- electronic-rock' Boratto kind of production like 'It's Majik' or 'Like You' and a much more techno approach." The Brazilian producer further embraces the pop-friendly essence of his past work on tracks like "The Phoenix", featuring vocalist Nathan Berger, and "Overload", both melding acidulous synth lines with laser-precise breaks, vox hooks and drops calibrated for extended radio and club use, although sieved through his distinctive rainbow-hued musical prism. For the symbolists out there, the album's pared-down closer "618" duration accidentally happens to equate the proportions of the said pentagram. "Coincidence?" Boratto questions, and capsulizes, "not so ufanista and supporter of Brazilian neo-concretism, but I guess the Brazilian sculptor Lygia Clark also inspired me a lot. Not the meaning of her sculptures, but the shape of the hinge of most of her work." Whereas "Spur" (a field-tested 808 and 909-heavy "purist track") and "Alcazar" are sheer smooth-edged four-to-the-floor epics, the album also shares its lot of startling moments, such as with the John Barry-esque "Scene 2" and its refined string-laden buildup; or with "Hallucination" (feat B.T.), and the further James Holden-ish title-track "Pentagram". Pentagram, in its entirety, is alive and definitely just as manifold and hopeful as its architectonics are the stuff of science and dreams all at once.

VA Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s Vol. 2 CD
Mayway Records' treasure trove filled with Belgian gold nuggets is far from empty. Volume 2 comes just six months after the initial launch of the label's compilation series (MAYWAY 002CD/LP, 2017). Part one of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s was a smash hit. The label chalked up rave reviews both at home and abroad, and even famous Dutch writer Nico Dijkshoorn sung praises for the album in a column. Of course, all the accolades were just another impetus to outdo ourselves with Volume 2. Whereas Volume 1 was a blend of many different genres -- from heavy guitars across Brit and synth pop to hard electro beat, mellow soul, and cabaret -- the second installment will have the feel of a genuine album, albeit without abandoning the treasure hunt vibe that characterizes the series. Several big names were gracious enough to contribute to this sophomore release such as Dead Man Ray, Mauro Pawlowski & The Grooms, Vive La Fête, and Lunascape (with ex-Hooverphonic singer Kyoko Baertsoen). Simi Nah, Paper Fox, and the Walloons Of Piano Club -- with Melanie De Biasio's twin sister Catherine on the mic -- serve up sublime electro pop, whereas Barbie Bangkok, De Bossen, Black Shark, Basics, and Party At Vanzetti's (the band of Bart Vanneste, aka Freddy Devadder) cater to guitar and edgy (garage) rock enthusiasts. Also included are squeaky clean pop songs by Sugar Kane and Red Elmo, pining indie pop gems by The Germans and Confuse The Cat, laid back, night-clubby jazz pop by Stuffed Babies On Wheels, and a majestic "Air-meets-Moby" instrumental by Delavega. The only Dutch-speaking song on the record is the exquisite avant-garde track "Ten Dans" by De Legende, a project by Elvis Peeters (ex-Arome Di Amore), who has meanwhile made a name for himself as a writer. And finally the fantastic cult single "Constant (Raving)" by the mysterious Sue Daniels, is the kind of song that perfectly captures the essence and the raison d'être of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s. Like Volume 1, this second installment of the series boasts a unique design and detailed liner notes. Once again the label were lucky enough to snare a renowned photographer: Frieke Janssens. Also features Sunday Afternoon Soundsystem, Sue Daniels, and Stuffed Babies On Wheels. CD version comes in a three-panel digipak; Includes liner notes.

MF DOOM Operation: Doomsday (Fondle 'Em Cover) (Black Vinyl) 2LP
2018 repress. "Back again on vinyl where it belongs, MF Doom's 1999 classic Operation: Doomsday is now presented on a premium grade LP, with audio re-mastered from the original Fondle'Em Records release, and a poster of the album cover art! Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF Doom hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF Doom and the rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, 'Rhymes Like Dimes,' Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct.' 'Who You Think I Am?' features Doom's crew M.onster I.sland C.zars, while on '?' he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on 'Tick, Tick...' where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial rap universe, Operation: Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy."

FOXX, JOHN Metamatic (Deluxe) 3CD
An expanded reissue of John Foxx's Metamatic, originally released in 1980. The original ten-track album was remastered from analog tapes back in 2014, along with various B sides. A few tapes full of instrumental music from the session were also set aside for remastering but these revealed further discoveries, including alternative mixes and the song "Miss Machinery" -- a mutant, electro-punk twist on Foxx B side, "20th Century". Meanwhile John Foxx assembled his notebooks from the period which included lists of possible track titles that have now been used for the unreleased material on this album. Some of the notes were also scanned for the artwork, along with previously unseen photos as well as rare drawings and illustrations by the artist. Jonathan Barnbrook (regular Foxx collaborator and Bowie's Blackstar designer) worked on the new reissue design as the project grew to 49 tracks across three CDs. This includes the 15 instrumentals on the third CD, which collectively sound like a lost electronic soundtrack with echoes of Quatermass, BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, and the dark DIY electronics of Thomas Leer and Robert Rental. Features Previously unreleased tracks; every B side, outtake, and unreleased track has been taken from the best possible source and (re)mastered over the last four years. Triple-CD in clamshell box; Includes six art cards and 40-page booklet with previously unseen photos and rare drawings and illustrations by John Foxx; 2014 remaster of Metamatic album from analog tapes.

SLUM VILLAGE The Lost Scrolls 2: Slum Village Edition LP
"An underground classic in every sense of the term, Slum Village's 1998 production Fantastic, Vol. 2 was a breath of fresh air for hip-hop heads when it finally hit shelves in 2000, earning heavy acclaim and artistic clout for the trio of T3, Baatin, and the late production legend J Dilla. Fantastic, Vol. 2 featured vibes and lyrics harkening back to the classic sounds of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, smooth and infectious production that would go on to set a blueprint for the 00's arrival of neo soul, and top-shelf guest appearances from Q-Tip, D'Angelo, Busta Rhymes, and many more. Now, upon the 20th anniversary of the album's completion, Ne'Astra Media Group is proud to bring a whole new collection of long lost tracks from the Fantastic, Vol. 2 sessions to you. Produced between 1996 and 1999, The Lost Scrolls Vol. 2 (Slum Village Edition) features 11 unreleased demos and remixes featuring the classic Slum Village lineup. AXELROD, DAVID Song Of Innocence CD
"Audiophile reissue, transferred directly from Axelrod's original EQ'ed master tapes at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster. Axelrod's debut, and a '60s masterpiece. Celebrated as psychedelic, the birth of jazz-fusion, the harbinger of hip-hop, Song of Innocence is a hybrid that no one, not even Axelrod himself, could describe. Grounded by Wrecking Crew vets Earl Palmer and Carol Kaye's funk, torn between the juxtaposition of musical elements, put at ease, Axelrod's sweeping arrangements, which utilize brass and strings in a way that no one of his era did. It's both violent and sublime. This is the first Now-Again issue in a series of reissues centered around Axelrod's Capitol Trilogy -- Song of Innocence, Songs of Experience and Earth Rot -- which will see release through 2018. CRAYOLA LECTERN Happy Endings CD
Happy Endings is an album of extraordinary music, borne of an extravagance of imagination, unfettered by convention or fashion, poised rather sexily in some other dimension beyond the usual parameters. With this in mind, you could call it psychedelic. Death and love crop up a lot on this album, with a sacred/profane, soulful/irreverent, silly yet deadly serious wisdom, which recognizes the universality of its themes, allowing them to gently explode into your ears. Crayola Lectern is reaching out here. It's musick with a "K". A man in great demand by the cognoscenti as your go to musical visionary, Crayola Lectern is Chris Anderson with Alistair Strachan, Jon Poole, Bob Leith, Damo Waters, and Bic Hayes."An absolutely superb new album from one of the UK's most underrated mavericks. Imagine Robert Wyatt, High Llamas, Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Todd Rundgren all in one magnificent human. That's Crayola Lectern. Superb arrangements throughout, and in common with all the above I suppose, a sense of adventure and playfulness is evident throughout. One of my favourites of the year so far" --Simon Raymonde, Bella Union.

MARTYN Voids 2LP
Double LP version. Martyn releases the new album Voids, his first for Ostgut Ton. Over the course of 2017, Dutch-born, Washington D.C.-based producer Martyn had undergone a metamorphosis -- one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation. Having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, Martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, Detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. However, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to Max Roach's 1979 ensemble percussion album M'Boom. In his own words: "That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It's a project where he works with a slew of top-notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition . . . I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players." Over the next eight months Martyn would go on to write Voids, his first LP for Ostgut Ton and in a few other ways markedly different than previous records; it features no guest appearances or collaborations and at nine tracks, is musically stripped down to the essentials. It's also a highly personal take on forging new paths forward in genres where the Berghain/Panorama Bar resident has long been known for his production wizardry and innovation: post-dubstep and UK garage. Voids is roughly split between these musical foundations, recontextualized with elements of Nyabinghi, drum 'n' bass, and gqom to form snarling, bass-driven hybrids. In contrast to his GL Outtakes (2017), Voids is also an attempt to work through personal trauma and loss, including the passing of close friend and fellow producer Marcus Intalex, aka Trevino, to whom the track "Manchester" is dedicated. The sound of Voids is big and unapologetically rough around the edges. It is music as therapy, drawing on the healing elements of music past, but is far from retrospective. Indeed, Martyn is no stranger to electronic futurism, as his numerous solo productions for Ostgut Ton, Dolly, Hyperdub, Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Warp, and his own 3024 label (with visual collaborator Jeroen Erosie) have shown. On Voids, however, these futuristic sonic qualities coalesce into something darker, more biographical and untethered from expectations.

J DILLA Ruff Draft: Dilla's Mix Cassette
"When Ruff Draft saw its initial release in 2003, J Dilla possessed production skills on par with anyone in hip-hop -- technically and creatively. 'At the top of his game,' says longtime friend and collaborator, Karriem Riggins. After years of building while modestly deferring to others of both greater and lesser notoriety, Dilla finally completed the first solo endeavor on his own label, entirely on his own terms. The significance of such an autonomous success often gets overlooked, and partly accounts for why Ruff Draft is one of the lesser-referenced entries in Dilla's oeuvre. 'It's a mysterious little project,' says his mother, Maureen Yancey. 'But out of his entire career, that was the happiest time.' Prior to recording the EP, Dilla found himself at a crossroads. Estranged from his label, MCA, and separated from the mother of his youngest daughter, frustration abounded both personally and professionally. Dilla spent parts of 2002 and 2003 working on an album for MCA that featured his rapping over contributions from other producers with whom he had connected and whose music he respected. At the time, he was known primarily for his beats, yet reviled for his MCing by most anyone not from his hometown of Detroit. The project was to be an intentional freak of the industry. The project would go on to spur his collaborative album with Madlib, Jaylib, and would first showcase the template that he would take to his greatest heights with 2006's Donuts. The Stones Throw reissue of Ruff Draft from 2008 featured remixes of the songs from the album, done without Dilla's involvement. This version of the album takes Dilla's recently discovered mixes of the album and restores his vision for the project. 'Straight from the mothafuckin' cassette,' as he phrased the sound he was going for on the EP's intro."

TETRACK Trouble LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Tetrack's Trouble, originally released in 1983. Roots harmony trio Tetrack formed in the Mountain View area of east Kingston in the early 1970s, borrowing the name from a local sound system (which had taken the moniker in reference to the Tetrarchy established by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the third century). Although Paul Mangaroo was the primary lead singer, Carlton Hines wrote most of their material and was the real figurehead of the group; Hines and Dave Harvey were typically employed as backing vocalists, but each also sang lead. A mutual friend introduced them to the visionary producer Augustus Pablo, leading to impressive debut recordings at Lee Perry's Black Ark and the stunning debut LP, Let's Get Started (1978). Despite the album's widespread acclaim, the lack of ready finance and slow pace at Pablo's Rockers stable led the group to shift base to Gussie Clarke's Music Works in 1983, with Hines also being employed as a songwriter for other artists there. The resultant album Trouble was cut for Gussie with Sly And Robbie, the engineer Soljie, and a range of other stellar players, including guitarist Willie Lindo, the material issued in extended "disco mix" format, to make the most of its captivating rhythms; British and Japanese editions complimented its initial Jamaican release.

COP TEARS Thirteen Harmonies (Cage, 1986) CD
Recital label head Sean McCann on the release: "I have been a fan of Derek Baron's music for only a small amount of time. But I appreciate how he and his cohorts blend technical talent and technical knowledge with abstract ideas and abstract approaches. Cop Tears is made up of Derek Baron, Cameron Kapoor, and Andrew Wilhite. This album is a four-track recording of the group playing one of my favorite John Cage pieces, Thirteen Harmonies. It was originally published in a tiny edition of 40 CDrs by Derek's own Reading Group label. I thought it was beautiful enough to see the light of day again. I even got the John Cage Trust to sign off on the release! As regal as bored as humble as confused."Here is what the group wrote on the album: "Thirteen Harmonies is a selection from John Cage's 44 Harmonies From Apartment House 1776, written for the American bicentennial, which itself is a selection of pieces in the colonial and early American choral canon. Arranged for double bass, electric guitar, and flute, from the arrangement for keyboard and violin, from the original four-part chorale, Thirteen Harmonies is an arrangement of a reduction of an arrangement of a reduction. The choral composers whose works were the material for Cage's Apartment House were considered the avant-garde of choral music of the 18th century, and their music became the seed of Sacred Harp music, a radical lay tradition of the rural American south. John Cage composed the harmonies by way of erasure of the Protestant chorales and set them in an 'apartment house' among other American voices: Native American ritual music, slave spirituals, and Sephardic incantations. What binds the lay experimentalism of William Billings and his contemporaries (all white American men) to the 'multiplicity of centers' of the Apartment House of John Cage (a white American man) is the destruction of a privileged musical space, the making-permeable of the division between the music of the piece and the sound of the people coming together to make the music of the piece. A positive destabilizing from within. Thirteen Harmonies was recorded live on two consecutive mornings in 2016 to a faulty four-track on bled-through tape in Cameron's apartment house in Queens, New York."

OPEN CORNER Empty Pool To No One CD
Here, Asha Sheshadri and Christian Mirande record together as Open Corner. Vocal accounts of mundane suburbia and human despondency by Asha, under a woven forest of pops and cracks and creaks courtesy of Christian. In a way the texts are reminiscent of Robert Ashley's "Au Pair" pieces -- from the second Atalanta CD (LCD 3303CD) -- overrun by the swamp of a broken dishwasher and a leaking wine fridge. Emotionally and sonically claustrophobic. A unique take on voice and sound: in-between an audiobook and a sound-map. Exhausted and hungover, the frequencies and intense proximity really fit the digital CD format. Here is your chance to revitalize the ? Records weapon of choice... First edition of 200.

ARTIS Caecilia 12"
Four ear-pleasing transmissions from Safe Trip associate, Artis. The ethereal, dreamy, arpeggio-driven throb of "Panthera Pardus", with its poignant tone and undulating lead lines, is meant as a warning. The same could be said of "Cetacea", where melancholic synthesizer sounds and meandering electronics gently wind their way around hybrid electronic/acoustic percussion. "Giganthopithecus" is a composition littered with frequent increases in percussive intensity and a mind-altering melodic refrain. The colorful melodic fluidity, futurist new age construction, and layered wooden drum hits of "Delphinae" are deeply affective.

BUSH, GLYN BIGGA Sunken Foal Stories LP
Glyn Bigga Bush has been producing electronic and sample-based music since the early '90s when he formed Rockers Hi-Fi, going on to release numerous albums. Since the turn of the century he has produced and DJ'd as BiggaBush as well as various side projects such as Lightning Head, the Dandelion Set, and the Magic Drum Orchestral. Bigga's latest project Sunken Foal Stories represents a departure from much of his other work in that it is not primarily based on beats. Instead, his working method was to go with fascinating samples, accidental juxtapositions, and irregular loops -- inspired by pioneers of sound such as Faust and the audio experiments of Julian House, as well as early stereo test records, soundtracks, and library music. The 21 concise tracks of Sunken Foal Stories link into two 15-minute segments on the LP. Bush explores the random elements created by overlaying disparate samples, where chimes of baroque psychedelia clash with ascending classical strings, or a haunting Eastern European folk song is looped into an eternal cadence of longing. Various voices float over the speakers, lost poets, disturbing therapists, dreaming vampires, chuckling cabaret singers. Sourced almost entirely from charity shops and car boot sales, the source material speaks of a forgotten yet relatively recent period, when stereo was something new and exciting, when home entertainment first came into its own and suburban homes thrilled to the exotic sounds of home organs, primitive beatboxes, LPs bought in unusual holiday destinations and "glamorous" soundtracks. The result is a journey into a familiar yet strange world of sound, as witnessed by these early reactions: "A genre spanning melting pot that touches on intimate and thought-provoking aspects of record sampling."; "Cut up collaged sonic curios '50s noir sketches '70s medieval electro modal pulp detective finds covert sound lab break-in beatnik folding time minimalist go-go half imagined torch songs."; "21st century cultural decay meets Alice In Wonderland."; "... like a journey to a place and time long gone, a place of love and harmony. It will put you back in touch with the art of storytelling via beautiful soundscapes and melodies."; "Spirits of instruments and sounds come across and alive throughout the entire album reminding you why you fell in love with music."; "A disconcerto, soundtracking the hive-mind's motion picture dreamtime." "Nosferatu's cocktail party."

WITTHUSER & WESTRUPP Der Jesuspilz - Live! LP
"Bernd Witthuser and Walter Westrupp have been active in the German folk scene since the 1960s. After Witthuser had co-organized the Essener Songtage (feat. The Mothers of Invention, Amon Düül, Guru Guru etc.) in 1968, the two musicians joined forces in June 1969 to a folk duo with psychedelic impact. (The duo can be counted on the very popular genre of acid folk then, where bands such like The Incredible String Band, Fresh Maggots, Syd Barrett and Tea & Symphony belonged to). First they called themselves W & W's Pop Cabaret, in 1970 they changed their name to Witthuser & Westrupp. The duo existed from 1969 to 1973, lived and worked together and also worked in sessions by Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser at this time, which appeared on several albums under the band name Cosmic Jokers. The third and most successful LP Der Jesuspilz - Musik vom Evangelium was produced in August 1971 in the wake of the Jesus movement. It was based on the book The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by John Marco Allegro. The basic idea for this LP was to reinterpret the Bible. Thus, the 'Brosel' (engl. crumb) was declared the essence of life, and Jesus addresses his disciples as 'boys'. Biblical texts were musically translated and interpreted by Witthuser & Westrupp. The world premiere of 'Der Jesuspilz' took place on 25.11.1971 in the apostle church in Essen. The media response was huge, so that the duo then appeared in over a hundred churches in Germany and at German television. The songs on this album were recorded at the public rehearsal in the JZ (Youth Center) Essen a few days before the first church performance. A true historical sound document! Unfortunately, Bernd Witthüser could not live the release of this record, he died in August 2017!"

BALDAN, BEBO Vapor Frames 86/91 LP
Soave present a reissue of Bebo Baldan's Vapor Frames 86/91, originally released in 1991. The alchemist Bebo Baldan, accompanied by Steve James on violin and sarod (as well as on instruments of various geographical extractions) mixes, in a personal way, sounds from a bevy of different cultures -- from Mediterranean and Indian, to South American -- with synths, samples, and loops. The result is a boundless music that carries you, riding soft waves and bobbing between Balearic ambient, jazz, and electronic, on islands that have been quietly, yet carefully cultivated; peaceful, fascinating, and reflective -- places where time appears to dissolve. Vapor Frames 86/91 was originally released for Venetian Divergo -- a non-profit label, which after the Baldan album, also released The Wind Collector by Gigi Masin and Alessandro Monti a few months later (1991). This reissue includes two added bonus tracks from the same sessions, both at the end of each side. The result is a stunning auditory atmosphere that relaxes the spirit in the same vein as a reiki treatment.

ABATE/RICCARDO SINIGAGLIA, MAURIZIO Dialoghi Nel Vuoto LP
When No Pussyfooting was released in 1973 by two great pioneers like Eno and Fripp, that first whisper of their artistic association surprised many critics and fans. Yet, that kind of minimalist ambient sonority carried out by the two appeared in the ear like something absolutely new and innovative. Although nowadays we might be more accustomed to creative operations of this type, we are still fascinated, while listening, by the still possible achievement of relevant moments of musical epiphany, however distant we might be from that first eminent combination between keyboards and guitar which concerned electronic experimentation. Something similar occurred in this new collaboration between Riccardo Sinigaglia and Maurizio Abate; two generations in comparison, whose research developments unfold in the handful of different conceptions and experiences. Their music does not own a pre-defined structure; it receives its ultimate reason from the progressive and continuous metamorphosis of sound. It's all the result of spontaneous sessions, during which a predisposition towards an active trance procedure, sustained by complementary flashes of lucidity, prevails. The dominant atmosphere is entirely oneiric, perpetually doubtful, still not linked to the passive remote unconscious: it's rather reminiscent of lucid dreams, of phosphenes, of eidetic visualizations that belong to Tibetan tradition.

VA Panama! 2: Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical & Calypso Funk On The Isthmus 1967-77 2LP
2018 repress. Soundway present the second volume in their Panama! series, showcasing the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Panama is one of the world's great crossroads -- a bridge between North and South America, and home to the great canal that links the Caribbean and the Pacific. After soaking up the varied influences of Panama's diverse population, the dancefloors and bars spat out a heady mix that took in the raw vallenato of neighboring Colombia, the soul and funk of America, the calypso of Trinidad and the son and rumba of Cuba, all combined and re-styled in a uniquely Panamanian fashion, making Panama a central spoke in the wheel of Caribbean music. Writer and compiler Roberto Ernesto Gyemant travelled throughout the country in search of elusive records and reclusive musicians, tracking down hopeful tips and half-remembered names and addresses. Two years of digging through dusty warehouses and old radio stations in search of crackly records and dusty photos led to an exhaustive look at the musical culture of this fascinating country. If you think salsa is the sum total of Latin American music, then think again -- the hot sound of Panamanian musica tipica and calypso Español throws everything into the mix for a non-stop journey through Afro rhythms, carnival sounds, tipica soul, and cumbia madness. Listen to the heavy tamborito rhythm of Los Silvertones and you'll hear where the instantly-recognizable, syncopated beat of modern-day reggaeton was born. Check the countrified re-versioning of Willie Colon's classic "La Murga De Panama" -- a perfect riposte to those that think Latin music begins and ends with Shakira. Listen to "La Escoba" by Alfredo Y Su Salsa Montañera and see that the currently in-vogue sound of cumbia owes as much to Panama as it does Colombia. Also features Papi Brandao Y Su Conjunto Aires Tableno, Maximo Rodriguez Y Sus Estrellas Panameñas, Papi Brandao Y Sus Ejecutivos, Skorpio, Los Superiores, Idamerica Ruiz Con Osvaldo Ayalla Y Sus Conjunto, Los Revolucionarios (Soul Revolution), The Duncan Brothers, The Soul Fantastics, The Exciters, Meñique El Panameño Con Bush Y Los Magnificos, Camilo Azuquita, Los Papacitos, Sir Jablonsky, Lord Cobra Y Los Hnos. SOTE Persian Electronic Music Volume 2 / Sacred Horror In Design LP
Sote aims to devise an idealized fusion of the musical heritage and tradition of Iran with the forward-thinking vision which has propelled his storied career producing techno, hardcore, and computer music for labels like Warp, Ge-stell, Morphine, and Repitch. Now living in Tehran, his music has frequently grappled with the strict cultural restrictions imposed in his country over the past few decades, finding a space and setting to nurture new developments in experimental sound and performance. Working with Arash Bolouri, who plays the santour (Persian hammered dulcimer), and Behrouz Pashaei on the long-necked, four-string setar, Sote frames and responds to their traditional artistry. On occasions he directly manipulates the music emanating from their ancient instruments, cultivating, and thickening up a surreal and beautiful tonality plucked from their strings with a series of processing techniques, but mostly each track is a peaceful arrangement and partnership, Sote electro-acoustically augmenting their movements within his own cybernetic framework. Unusual color and complex microtonality found in the classical music of Iran. Blurts of noise, sour tones, and a vaguely technoid or dub-wise impression expose the inner rhythm and counterpoint embedded in this strummed music. Emotional, mathematical and polyrhythmic principles underpinning Persian music, the record reveals a dramatic blend of acoustic Persian instrumentation and contemporary electronics. Artwork by Ala Ebtekar.

Double LP version. Red/white vinyl; Includes four-page insert and download code which includes a bonus track featuring Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, "Through The Speech Of Stars".Tarab (in literary Arabic: euphoria, secular exaltation, ecstasy), Oiseaux-Tempête's sixth release on Sub Rosa, is the result of live recordings captured during the AL-'AN! (SR 440CD/LP, 2017) tour. In a handful of improvised albums circumnavigating the troubled waters of the contemporary Mediterranean -- Greece with the eponymous Oiseaux-Tempête (SR 381CD/LP, 2013), Turkey and Sicily for Ütopiya? (SR 396CD/LP, 2015), and Lebanon with AL-'AN! -- the collective Oiseaux-Tempête has stretched its electric arc over musical genres and borders, imposing itself in a river of tours and releases like a wild UFO within the hexagonal indie scene. It is little surprise that following the remix album -- Re-Works (SR 387LP, 2014) -- and collection of B sides -- Unworks & Rarities 2012-15 (SR 424CD/LP, 2016) -- Oiseaux-Tempête unveils, by way of a new opus, an album entirely recorded in concert. Tarab is the result of live recordings captured during the AL-'AN! tour which led the group, after a preliminary residency at l'Autre Canal in Nancy, to cross Europe and into Canada, performing at Le Guess Who? in Utrecht, opening for Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart in Montreal and Toronto, following Jerusalem In My Heart through France then from Brussels to Berlin, and closing at the Irtijal festival in Beirut. Tarab is a meeting of the Parisian founding members Frédéric D. Oberland and Stéphane Pigneul, electronic sound wizard Mondkopf, G.W.Sok (The Ex), Sylvain Joasson (Mendelson), videographers As Human Pattern, and the Lebanese musicians Charbel Haber, Abed Kobeissy, and Ali El Hout (Two Or The Dragon). The studio pieces are stretched, deconstructed, and rearranged here while new works from the road -- poems "Grasse Matinée" by Jacques Prévert and "Tuesday And The Weather Is Clear" by Mahmoud Darwish -- find unique musical settings. It is in symbiosis, in the fever and visceral experimentation, that the musicians seek rapture. Arranged in a semicircle, they invoke the elements and attempt the catharsis, inviting the spectator to spiral with them, entwined in the sonic explosions, finding beauty and peace in the spaces of improvisation and elaboration. Marrying free-rock, organic electronics, traditional instruments, and unbridled electricity, Tarab, far beyond the vibrant testimony, is a generous invitation to experience, to meditate, and to share.

PSEUDOCODE Next One's Called LP
Next One's Called could be seen as the missing link between Slaughter in a Tiny Place (SR 298CD/LP, 2010) and 1982's Europa (SR 372LP) -- the third and final LP report from Pseudocode. All songs here are previously unreleased; Recorded and mixed between 1980 and 1981. Pseudocode were a Belgian electronic improvised music band, active from 1980 to 1982. Featuring Xavier Ess (Thrills), Guy-Marc Hinant, and Alain Neffe (Insane Music, Bene Geserit), the material on Next One's Called sees Pseudocode in a kind of free form minimal electronique concrete mood. There's even the odd suggestion of a pop tune here and there, maybe even some danceable beats; if you've got one leg shorter than the other. While Xavier S. contributes most of the lyrics and vocals, Guy-Marc Hinant plays the core melody often on guitar or electric piano. Neffe's contributions are particularly noteworthy throughout, as he weaves together the bulk of the sonic cloth through overdubbing and mixing -- one of his parts is remotely virtuosic (hence his self-identification as a non-musician), but they are always unexpected and perfect in and of themselves, emotionally and sonically, and in that sense, they are deeply musical. LASWELL/NICHOLAS JAMES BULLEN, BILL Bass Terror LP
Sub Rosa present the first LP issue of Bass Terror from Bill Laswell and Nicholas James Bullen, originally released as a CD in Sub Rosa's Subsonic series in 1995. Bass Terror Tetragrammaton" is the dark side of Bill Laswell at the peak of his art in 1995 -- he goes into a black trance. The piece is not from a collaboration, it was designed alone, in his studio in Brooklyn. "Bass Terror Tetragrammaton" is also to be linked to an alchemical process. "Nocturnal Crawl" is a totally hypnotic piece, the first that Nik Bullen designed outside of Napalm Death and Scorn. The two pieces answer each other strangely, like two sides of the same hidden anxiety. The concept of the Subsonic series was the confrontation of electric guitars as the tutelary instrument, but here and this time only, it came out of bassists confronting each other. KRAFT, KONRAD Arctica CD
Tal present the first reissue of Konrad Kraft's Arctica, originally released on cassette on SDV Tonträger in 1987 in a handmade edition of about 50 copies. Pioneering production from the Düsseldorf mid '80s electronic underground world. Transferred for the first ever time from the original cassette to vinyl and CD. Konrad Kraft (Detlef Funder) is one of the still overlooked producers of Düsseldorf's fertile electronic music scene. Reduced to its essential musical elements, Arctica certainly contains some of the most uncategorizable and bewildering pieces of mid-eighties electronic music. Set between the areas of post punk and early techno, the album undulates between analog as well as digital instrumentation. After Konrad Kraft's appearance on the enthusiastically received compilation Sammlung: Elektronische Kassettenmusik, Dusseldorf 1982-1989 (BB 236CD/LP, 2017). Cassettes were the medium of choice for self-produced recordings at the time. At the time of the Arctica sessions, the newly set up SDV studio consisted of a Tascam 38, an eight-track tape recorder, and only a handful of synthesizers such as a Roland JX3P and a Korg Monopoly. The style of Konrad Kraft's productions displayed (ever since and up until today), a strong adherence to an idea of continual self-creation and a quality of wanting to be responsible for one's own identity. Even three decades after its recording, Arctica still evokes images of an expedition into an edgy cold place which has strange wonders, polar lights, structures of ice and innumerable worlds and creatures in store. Konrad Kraft (who today runs Paraschall mastering studios): "In the early '70s I got a transistor radio as a gift and immediately fell in love with the shortwaves. So many different sounds that was truly fascinating. I can imagine that nowadays as music is endlessly compressed to fit into mobile phones and as music on the radio sounds dreadfully the same, there might be a renewed interest by a young generation in discovering electronic sounds. I can listen to Arctica much better now than when it originally came out, because there is a distance which allows me to approach the recordings on a more neutral plane . . . Arctica seems to sound even more contemporary today than it did in 1987." First CD issue. CD version includes 16-page booklet; Edition of 300.

BROONZY, BIG BILL Big Bill's Blues LP
"Born Lee Bradley Conley, the revered blues musician Big Bill Broonzy first picked up performing at the early age of 10, playing a violin made from a cigar box. He switched from fiddle to guitar in the 1920s, after returning from a two-year World War Two service in Europe, and immediately leaving his home in Arkansas for Chicago, sensing opportunity. From there, Broonzy immediately set to work establishing himself, performing at various parties and social gatherings. Throughout the late 20s and into the 1930s, Broonzy's fortunes gradually increased as word spread of his talents. During this time he recorded numerous singles for classic blues labels like Paramount, Gennett, Champion, and Vocalion, and began to regularly perform in Chicago's South Side venues. Broonzy was one of the few classic bluesmen to record with a full band, but he particularly defined himself from his peers through the remarkable range and power to his singing voice, which served him well as blues started to give way to the earliest incarnations of R&B music. Big Bill Broonzy also set himself apart from his contemporaries into the 1940s. Many of the progenitor bluesmen of the time had given up music during the Great Depression, but Broonzy persisted, and continued to evolve his sound beyond traditional country blues. During this time, Broonzy would record one of his best-known singles, 'Key To The Highway', (a blues standard which would also be covered by Little Walter, Eric Clapton, and the Rolling Stones) and set the stage for a new wave of blues performers, and later rock and rollers, by being among the first of his genre to introduce electric instrumentation into his act. The 1950s were a banner year for traditional folk and country blues, where renewed interest in the styles led to new audiences in England and America. As numerous classic bluesmen began to come out of retirement to perform, Broonzy was already several steps ahead, having found success as part of a touring folk revue, and was featured alongside legendary folk singers such as Pete Seeger and Brownie McGhee. He continued to perform across folk and jazz clubs earning critical praise and standing ovations up to his death in 1958, having left behind an indelible blues legacy that inspired a wealth of legends, from Muddy Waters to Eric Clapton to Jerry Garcia."

SPRING HEEL JACK AND WADADA LEO SMITH Hackney Road LP
"Electronic duo Spring Heel Jack return with a collaboration with the legendary American trumpeter and Pulitzer Prize nominee Wadada Leo Smith. Wadada was born in the Mississippi Delta and became immersed in the music of the great blues masters as a young musician. He then moved to Chicago and became an early member of the AACM alongside the likes of Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Malachi Favors and Roscoe Mitchell. Recorded last year in London, this LP sees Smith's authoritative trumpet joined by Steve Noble's drums and Pat Thomas' piano, to make a stunning piece of aural theatre in six acts."

MONOLOC/JONAS LANDWEHR STYX 12"
In a Greek mythology, the river STYX is the connection to the underworld, but also one of the few river goddesses. According to the myth, the river STYX represents the border between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. This EP defines the Stygian sound with its mystic and underworldly tone. For Monoloc it was clear that he wanted to publish Jonas Landwehr's music on Unterland Records. Jonas Landwehr delivers three melancholic dub techno productions, influenced by his stay in the Taiwanese capital Taipeh. Monoloc continues to determine the Stygian sound with three further productions.

SCHOOL DAMAGE Sings... Four Songs About One Cat 7"
Melbourne/Geelong quartet School Damage began as a bedroom recording project for Carolyn Hawkins (Chook Race, Parsnip) and Jake Robertson (Ausmuteants, Frowning Clouds, etc). They released a cassette for Moontown Records in 2013, then were joined by Jeff Raty and Dani "Damage" Hakim. Taking cues from outfits such as The Vaselines, The Particles, and Young Marble Giants, School Damage's sound is defined by wobbly keyboards, weaving bass lines, and lyrics focused on the vagaries of modern life. With this release, School Damage tell the tale of an independently-minded feline that they share their life with called Lumpy (also known as Scump).

AMSTERDAM KLEZMER BAND & SONDORGO Szikra 2LP
Double LP version. Pinnacles of klezmer and Balkan scenes merge to form single super band; Szikra is a magical collaboration between the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and the Hungarian band, Söndörg?. When playing live the bands merge into a grooving, uplifting supergroup with a totally unique sound. The first concerts were electrifying. Klezmer and Balkan fans are already looking forward to the upcoming tour. "Both bands create and play music with an open mind," says AKB bassist Jasper de Beer. "We're inspired by everything that has common ground with klezmer, Balkan, and gypsy music. Söndörg? has a similar approach, and neither band is limited by tradition. So we have a unique sound." The acquaintance with the Hungarian band was purely a coincidence, Jasper says. "On a summer's day in 2015 I stumbled upon a performance in the Haarlemmerhout. I had never heard of Söndörg?. I had no idea what to expect." It soon dawned on him that he was witnessing something special. "The musicians play on tamburas, Serbian string instruments. They mix tambura with clarinet, kaval, sax, trumpet, accordion, davul, darbuka and occasional singing together. Unbelievable. The band is super tight and they are consummate instrumentalists. You can see and hear that they've been playing together for a long time. They've developed their own style, just like the AKB." The Amsterdam Klezmer Band, which has always been in for new musical adventures, had the idea to work together with Söndörg?. In early 2017 they contacted the Hungarian band, who responded enthusiastically. April 2017 they met in the Netherlands, and got on very well, both musically and personally. Their first musical explorations burst with energy and had an intriguing new sound. Szikra (Hungarian for "spark") was born. Five months later Söndörg? returned to the Netherlands, both bands having prepared new pieces of music. After intensive rehearsals they recorded the studio album Szikra. "It sounds like these two bands have played together for years," says Benjamin of Söndörg?. "When we're together the bands integrate effortlessly, with a unique style and sound," adds Jasper. "The musical chemistry is driving everyone in the band to new creative heights."

DYLAN, BOB Live At The Gaslight, NYC, September 6th, 1961 LP
Live At The Gaslight, NYC, September 6th, 1961 is a historic performance in many regards; it is one of the first known live recordings of the great Robert Zimmerman and, more importantly, the first known live recording to feature original songs ("Man On The Street", "Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues", and "Song To Woody"). Known amongst collectors as "The First Gaslight Tape", the sound quality on these recordings is fantastic, and it holds up as one of the best early Bob Dylan live recordings in both sound quality and performance.

CASH, JOHNNY Louisiana Hayride Recordings LP
The late, great Johnny Cash made appearances on the legendary radio and TV show broadcast out of Shreveport, LA in 1955, 1959, 1962, and 1963. Louisiana Hayride Recordings collects recordings from all of those performances. Though you know and love his studio hits, Cash was often at his best in front of a live audience and his performances here leave no doubt about that. With stunning performances from his Tennessee Two, the loose, humorous vibe of these recordings highlight Cash's best side. Absolutely essential.

BROONZY, BIG BILL Who's Sorry Now LP
Big Bill Broonzy experienced more in his 55 years on this planet than most. Before his recording career began in Chicago in the 1920s he had already been married, worked as a sharecropper, a Pullman porter, a cook, and served for two years in World War I. After cutting some of the most legendary blues 78s in the '20s and '30s, despite some success, Broonzy still had to work odd jobs through most of the '40s to survive and by the time the folk revival and Pete Seeger found him, he only had a few years left. This collection documents those final years, from 1951 to 1958, where Broonzy was touring Europe and finally receiving some of the worldwide acclaim he had long deserved. Though these recordings come at the end of his life, his guitar skill is honed and his voice like a fine aged whiskey. Another incredible collection of American blues from Wax Love.

HOPKINS, LIGHTNIN' Rockin' At Herald LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Lightnin' Hopkins's Rockin' At Herald, originally released as Lightnin' And The Blues in 1960. Recorded in Houston in 1954 and released on the New York Herald label, these classic recordings of Hopkins feature him on amplified guitar with bass and drums. These are not the folk-blues many associate with Hopkins, these are raw and glorious R&B-tinged blues recordings way more for the juke joints than the folk festivals. Lightnin' Hopkins is one of the most crucial blues musicians in history, and these are his most rocking and raucous sides ever!

BABA STILTZ Showtime 12"
"This EP is a collection of songs that were recorded during the past couple of years," says Baba Stiltz. "They all represent things I've been going through, just day to day stuff; travelling, DJing, meeting people, being alone a lot, falling in love, parties, hang overs etc." Swedish-born 24-year-old Baba Stiltz has been steadily releasing his idiosyncratic take on dance music. Opening the EP with jazz inflected slow-jam "Showtime" and peaking with "Maze", the kind of summer floor-filler Baba is such a natural at crafting-his range is fully on show for Showtime.

BATU Rebuilt EP 12"
Omar McCutcheon, operating under his Batu alias, has been on the frontline of Bristol's innovative electronic music scene since 2013. In 2015 he founded his record label Timedance. Batu's Rebuilt EP marks his third release in just over a year. Batu pushing his sound forward in every way possible, creating his most uniquely slippery sounding tracks to date. "I wanted to try and challenge myself a bit for this EP. Every track represents a different phase of experimentation -- and also different tempos, I wanted to push my processes further than I ever have done."
