NARK Empty Void EP 12"
Mike Simonetti's 2MR imprint welcome a genuine techno tour de force: Seattle's Nark. On a debut four-track behemoth entitled Empty Void EP, with two originals and two remixes, Nark reveals his full spectrum: from the alien swamp creatures of "Sunrise Climb" via the poisonous 303 of "Acid Night Cap" and the zoning tubular hypnotizer "Carl's K Hole". Octo Octa has us all gliding with her precision percussive twist to "Sunrise Climb". Finally the label boss man Simonetti gets involved in the action with a cosmically minded take on "Carl's K-Hole".

"Rubber" Khoza in 1988, she went solo. Following Khoza's death in the early 1990s, Ndaba never recorded again. Includes Nbada's in-demand tune, "Tomorrow". Mastered by Wouter Brandenberg.

ETCH Altered Roads Vol. 2 12"
Opening with the spacious and weightless drum choppage of "Lost Orbit VIP" looking back to BBC Radiophonic-era synth work. "Phenomena" is a different beast altogether, stripped back to the bare minimum of a claustrophobic sub bass, off-kilter Loefah-meets-J Dilla beat, and the monotonous groan of an unknown entity. "Beggars Belief" is a distant cousin of Etch's 2015 release on Wisdom Teeth "Toxin" (WSDM 003EP), with grimey basslines, swung beats, broken glass, and gushes of warm synth. For "Paging Dr.Octagon", Etch chops up old school breaks in the hardest way possible over looped synths and samples from the Mo Wax classic.

PASIPHAE Siphax EP 12"
To kick-start Artificial Dance's 2018 release program, the label has delved deep into the darkest corners of the Dutch electronic underground. The result is a debut solo EP from another future hero, Hague-based Pasiphae. Siphax EP, her first solo outing, is packed with mutant alien funk (the superb title track), horror-fired dancefloor dystopia (throbbing opener "Tachynons"), and skewed electronic soundscapes ("Vertical Rotation", which sounds like it could have been taken from the soundtrack of an early '80s art-house movie), the six tracks offer a neat summary of Pasiphae's unique musical world.

HUDSON, KEITH Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood LP
2018 repress; LP version. Originally released in 1974 on Mamba, Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood is the most hallowed of all those reggae albums which remain unavailable, and Keith Hudson's key achievement in a career launched when, as a fourteen-year-old, he recorded members of The Skatalites on his "Shades Of Hudson" rhythm. After a series of solid-gold productions for Ken Boothe, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, U-Roy and the rest, this album projects Hudson's removal from Jamaica to London and New York studios and transatlantic audiences, and inaugurates a sequence of albums -- classics like Pick A Dub, Brand, Playing It Cool, Playing It Right -- which show his troubled experimentalism better suited to the LP than the cardinal 7" reggae format. Anchored here by Santa Davis and George Fullwood from the Soul Syndicate -- alongside musicians like Augustus Pablo, Count Ossie and Leroy Sibbles -- Hudson's mood is tormented and dazed, as on titles like "Darkest Night," "My Nocturne" and "Testing My Faith," where he struggles for Black senses of commitment --political, existential, religious -- at its breaking point. Magnificently and deadly serious, hauntingly unique, unmissable and unforgettable.

PETARDS, THE The Petards LP
"After the success of their debut album A Deeper Blue in late 1967, The Petards were unstoppable. 1968 was to be another decisive year. Sigi Loch, then young record company boss in Munich, discovered the band and signed them to his label Liberty. The Schrecksbach band consisting of the brothers Klaus (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Horst Ebert (vocals, guitar, piano), Roger Waldmann (bass, vocals) and Arno Dittrich (drums) was now in prominent company, because Amon Düül II, Krokodil and The Can were also under contract with Sigi Loch. In July, The Petards recorded their first single for Liberty, Pretty Liza b/w Rainbows & Butterflies at the Munich Trixi recording studio, directed by Sigi Loch. A respect success, of course from the pen of the two Ebert brothers. The four musicians had long since become stars in their Hessian homeland, and intensive touring has also made them famous in the rest of Germany. In 1968 alone, The Petards played 270 gigs, including a handful of shows in what was then Czechoslovakia, where the band was enthusiastically received. Their performance in Pilzen was even broadcast live on Czech radio! The band still lived with their roadies in the Ebert family home in Schrecksbach, the band's rural headquarters.Shortly before the CSSR tour in October 1968, the band returned to the Trixi recording studio in Munich to record their second album under the direction of Sigi Loch. The band had already tried out many of the songs live at their countless live shows, so the recording sessions were fast and professional. The Trixi recording studio was already known at that time for its great technical equipment, and the band enjoyed audibly trying out the versatile possibilities of the existing equipment. The Petards was a significant move forward compared to the debut A Deeper Blue, which affected both the songs (of course all written by the Ebert brothers) and the performance in the studio..."

BACAO RHYTHM & STEEL BAND Xxplosive/Burn 7"
"Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band return with another instantly classic 45 guaranteed to be all over DJs set lists. With their sophomore full length coming in September, they treat us to another bomb of a two sider. Side A is a cover of the Dr Dre hit 'XXplosive' done up in proper BRSB fashion, smashing drums and steel pans playing the lead and bass lines. They take this one into new territory by adding synth parts and dubbed out horn lines playing Nate Dogg's infamous vocal hook melodies. Side B takes on one of NYCity's grimiest Hip Hop club anthems, Mobb Deep's 'Burn'. We decided to do this tune and demoed it out long before the unfortunate passing of Prodigy. Unfortunately, he will never get to hear this cover, and that has been one of the nicest things in covering some of these more current Hip Hop tunes. Rest In Peace P. BRSB manages to do it again?..a version equally as raw and punchy as the original. Pans bang out the iconic riff from the original, theremin ushers in the changes, and the low rubble of the synth bass is sure to crush the subwoofers."

FIRES OF ORK, THE The Fires Of Ork 2CD
Biophon present a double reissue of The Fires Of Ork's The Fires Of Ork (1993) and The Fires Of Ork 2 (2000). The Fires Of Ork was a collaboration project between the late Pete Namlook (1960-2012) and Geir Jenssen (aka Biosphere). The only two albums they recorded together are presented in this reissue. From Discogs: "Under the moniker The Fires Of Ork Jenssen and Namlook in 1993 combined their talents. During a two-week session in Frankfurt they composed a magnificent self-titled album, a magnum opus that ranges in tone from soothing to haunting, from dark to playful. The title track (appearing in two versions) was also released on a 12-inch which, just as the album, culled rave reviews everywhere. The name 'The Fires of Ork' is taken from Roy Batty's monologue at the end of the 1982 movie Blade Runner, as sampled on the first album by the duo."More from Discogs: "Pardon my lack of eloquence, suffice it to say this album is utterly fantastic. I've been trying to track it down for literally years and finally succeeded. It's well worth all the effort. It's simply amazing. What can I really say, musically, about the collaboration of two of ambient electronic music's greatest producers? Listening to this album conjures up fantastic mental images, and you won't want the journey to end. I'm sure every person who's listened to this has had their own unique experience with it. I doubt I'll ever get tired of listening to it. The packaging should come with a warning label, Fires Of Ork is addictive and mind-altering."Hyperreal: "The Fires Of Ork was the first collaboration between Pete Namlook and Geir Jenssen (aka Biosphere) and has since risen to legendary status in the ambient electronic scene as the first meeting of these two masters. Their common love for classical music as-well as dark ambient trance resulted in a unique combination of style that you could expect when you mix the essence of their Silence with Biosphere."

Fashion design is a creative task involving the shaping, bending, and breaking of codes. Techno is similar, as one mines the genre's legacy in order to navigate new territory. Creative polymath Virgil Abloh is most widely known for his fashion work, but it's no surprise his track "Orvnge" with Boys Noize is a powerfully executed exercise in the shared practice of finding the memetic, fractal base that forms the skeleton for a myriad of patterns that inevitably follow. "Orvnge" is a club weapon serving as a robust beginning for the further possibilities of their collaboration yet to unfold. Orange vinyl.

The shortest connection between the past and the future leads through the music of Boston 168, the duo of Sergio Pace and Vincenzo Ferramosca. "Cosmic Tribe" translates its idea of universal togetherness into a nerve-wrecking groove punctuated by complex percussion work and a subtly building acid line, while "Drops In Heaven" uses a booming kick drum as base for an emotionally driven exploration of sonic textures. The psychedelic "Straight To Light" nods to nineties pioneers like Emmanuel Top, showcasing Ferramosca and Pace's talent for creating musical depth by ingeniously bringing together a few select elements to greater effect.

MAROON TOWN Freedom Call LP
LP version. Ten brand new tracks from the Brixton-London band Maroon Town, including a collaboration with Basque singer Fermin Muguruza in the track "Hope". Ten razor sharp examples of the band's classic sound: smoking hot trad ska workouts collide with Latin, rap, and soulful reggae influences to fine effect throughout its duration. Maroon Town's music, although categorized sometimes as reggae, is really an innovative blend of get-up-on-your-feet-and-dance music with noticeable elements of ska, rap, jazz, soul, and funk. As it is well known, Maroon Town fuses the spirituality, and cinematic sound of classic ska with contemporary street rap, and a cheeky slice of Latin funk. The eight-piece explosion of ska, rap, and brassy dub has been tearing up audiences around the world for thirty years with number one tracks and extensive radio play around the globe include songs like "Fire", "Pound To The Dollar", "Cumbia Infernal", "Ya Ya Lemme Tell Dem"... Fresh out of college in 1987, emerged the idea between Deuan German and Rajan Datar of forming a band whilst spending a few months in the small village of Walderston high up in the hills of Jamaica. Back in London they managed to get a sound approximating that of ska and managed to get musical master tips from Prince Buster who they met and London legend Gaz Mayall (The Trojans). The name, Maroon Town, defines perfectly the spirit of the band, freedom, and self-reliance. The Maroons were the runaway slave rebels who escaped from the plantations and formed free autonomous communities. The first lineup of the band (1990) featured three men and four women and there was creative magic between them. One day, Rajan in some reception area in a North London building bumps into John Bradbury, the drummer of The Specials (his teenage heroes) and they bonded and Brad went on to produce the band's first single "City Riot" which was a version of Cannonball Adderley's "Jive Samba" which had also been covered by Prince Buster. They pressed up their own 7"s and almost immediately, John Peel was playing it regularly. In a very short space of time Maroon Town started to get a lot of recognition. The inspiring live act has been performing at prestigious venues and festivals all over the continent. They also made history when they were sponsored to the tune of £100,000 by Dr. Martens.

HELDON Third (It's Always Rock 'N' Roll) 2CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's third album Third (It's Always Rock 'N' Roll), originally released on Disjuncta in 1975. Third album from the French space-rock electro combo masterminded by Richard Pinhas. Heldon's darkest work lays another stone in their sonic mosaic: synths, drones, fuzz, and trippy improvisations. There's something wicked happening on Heldon's third album It's Always Rock And Roll. Richard Pinhas's essential attack of searing guitar and space-bound synthesizer didn't change radically after the first two Heldon albums, 1974's Electronique Guerilla (BB 280CD/LP) and 1975's Allez-Teia (BB 281CD/LP). But there's dark energy coursing through this double album, a chilly aura that makes even the quietest pieces shiver with tension. "At this time, I tried to turn Heldon into a darker band," Pinhas admits. "But dark is not negative to me." The darkness of It's Always Rock And Roll is more about exploring what's hidden and overturning convention -- about diving beneath bright surfaces to find something more mysterious. If It's Always Rock And Roll stands up in Heldon's catalog, perhaps it's due to expansion -- both in the sense of big ideas and lengthy durations. Most tracks last over seven minutes, and two are side-covering epics. "I think the length of a track is part of the creation of the track," says Pinhas. "There are imperatives. You can do something very complex with a lot of events in four minutes, and then some other things need to be done very slowly. You have to do the length that it demands." "We recorded this after having met with Philip K. Dick in California for two days," recalls Pinhas. "It was such an event for a 23-year old; he was to me one of the last real prophets. We talked about Jung, we talked about a lot of things. Maybe this encounter gave birth to all of Heldon Third." So the sci-fi master spawned a dark audio creation to rival his own work. Like the Heldon albums that precede it, It's Always Rock And Roll is undoubtedly Pinhas' baby. But its depth-probing sounds earned it a godfather, too. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

HELDON Agneta Nilsson (Heldon IV) CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's fourth album Agneta Nilsson, originally released on Urus Records in 1976. Agneta Nilsson opens with a mind-paralyzing track that proves stillness can have a pulse. "Perspective I" spends ten minutes poring through tectonic layers of heavy sound, piling everything so thick that the song becomes like quicksand for your brain. It's one of the most daunting works in the Heldon catalog, made all the more impressive by how simple it is. It's just sounds put together and turned up. It's the vital alchemy of Richard Pinhas's wizardry, deployed with maximum force. As on other early Heldon albums, the rest of Agneta Nilsson is diverse in a nearly contrarian way. Each track refuses to mimic its predecessor in a way that feels rebellious, like a child running away from home. This is true despite the fact that three of the four pieces are actually chapters of "Perspective", partners in a thematic whole. "Each one is a different point of view on the same field," explains Pinhas. "Different parts, different arrangements, but with a full concept in place." It's not easy to divine that concept in these pieces, but their sibling nature has a subconscious effect. The album-closing "Perspective IV" is one of Pinhas's most unabashedly proto-prog guitar-hero epics, boosted by a technical upgrade. "This was the first album where I had enough money to rent one or two days in a real studio to do the drumming," says Pinhas. "After that we had real budgets for studio time. That all changed with and after Agneta Nilsson -- that was a good turn." Pinhas parlayed Heldon's change of direction into three more adventurous albums in the '70s, and simultaneously spurred himself toward a solo career that continues to prod and probe the sonic universe today, over 40 years since he began. It would be wrong to say this album was the big bang of this singular career; the seeds of were planted years before, and every work Pinhas has been involved with sprouts more sounds and ideas that can grow into their own branches. But Agneta Nilsson is one of the most convincing pieces of evidence that Pinhas is incapable of sitting still. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

WARGIRL Arbolita EP CD
Long Beach, Southern California. Whilst nearby Los Angeles is where dreams are shattered, in Long Beach, people are getting on with their lives. Matt Wignall has been living there for years, runs a studio, seeks out old equipment to repair and prides himself in making it sound better than it ever did before. He produces bands such as Cold War Kids. With them, Wignall has recorded tracks such as "Hang Me Out to Dry" and "Hospital Beds" with a sound that is to die for. So the interesting question is: Why does a musician who has such an understanding of sound and such awesome equipment not have his own band? Now he has got one: Wargirl. "I knew I was capable of recording and writing good music. But the idea of being in some band where there's four guys playing and one of them singing lead just seemed incredibly boring to me," Wignall says. He likes listening to Santana's early records, Afrobeat recordings by Fela Kuti, the psychedelic masterpiece Forever Changes by Love (1967), the '70s psych funk masters War (who happen to also be from Long Beach!), as well as reggae, disco, garage rock, and post-punk. "One day the thought occurred to me that really what I should do was to get to know people and set up a band with them that would combine all of these aspects." So he went out, into town, down to the beach and realized: Actually, I already know all of these people, I just need to ask them. Looking at the band one immediately notices that the make-up of this band also makes a socio-political statement. There are three women and three men, each with colorful biographies, and they are playing music that is from all over the world, yet could only have been invented in California. Wargirl knows that the situation elsewhere in the US is totally different. "That's why we want to take a stand, want to show: There are still people who are different, who are open and not interested in commerce. We're still here!" Wargirl's music doesn't carry clear messages. "First and foremost, the songs should be fun and make you dance," Wignall says. But there is another layer hiding behind this. "It's like The Clash. They could be consumed as a party band-- but also as a source of information for revolutionary thoughts."

C.3.3. (TEST DEPT.) Ballad of Reading Gaol - The Cacophonietta CD
C.3.3. is a personal project from Paul Jamrozy, co-founder of original industrial agitators Test Dept. The work is inspired by the real life experience of Her Majesty's Prison Reading. Tracing the history of the location through to the present current political and social situation, evoking the harsh realities of Victorian and modern-day Britain. Reminiscent of the finest mid-era Test Dept., such as Gododdin (1989) or Pax Britannica (1991), with heavy percussion, strings, and strident vocals. The title C.3.3. is drawn from the cell number where the literary figure Oscar Wilde was incarcerated in Reading Gaol under gross indecency charges. C.3.3. was the pseudonym used for the publication "The Ballad of Reading Gaol", a poem based on the execution of a fellow inmate. This sonic rendition draws upon the writings of Wilde's poem and the horrors of prison life for a condemned man, as a metaphor for the universal predicament of all humankind. Originally released on CDr in 2011. Remastered with two bonus tracks, featuring Test Dept.; Six-panel digipak.

TUNNELS OF AH Charnel Transmissions CD
Tunnels Of Ah is Stephen Ah Burroughs (Head Of David). Charnel Transmissions is the fourth Tunnels Of Ah release and once more the TOAH sound is taken into ever more oblique regions. Inspired by the "chime and gong stations" recordings of the Cold War era, Charnel Transmissions sets out to evoke rather than recreate the alienated spirit(s) of those recordings. With the ritual percussion of Francis P. weaving throughout the album alongside cracked electronics, Charnel Transmissions is a disquieting spiral into an ashen world of "mythostatic psychopomp" where this world is transformed into a charnel ground of gods, ghosts, and jackals. Crumbling drones, splintered bursts of noise, and buried voices make Charnel Transmissions unconventional and non-linear, much like those charnel dwellers who seek out the lowest to attain the highest. For lovers of ceremonial sounds and dark places. Digipak. File next to Coil, Z'ev, Arktau Eos, Head Of David.

The Modern Sound Quintet's leader Rudy 'Two Left' Smith grew up in Port of Spain, Trinidad in the Caribbean and has had an illustrious career as a pannist - having traveled with one of the first steelbands to perform all over Europe which then morphs into a jazz ensemble. He has continued to be a leading jazz pannist performing all over the world and recorded extensively. The Modern Sound Quintet recorded Otinku for EMI Finland. The album mixed originals and covers of both long time jazz standards and recent jazz hits. The title track offers the strongest African element Kofi Ayivor chanting and Rudy Smith trying to give the pans a balafon quality to its sound in that piece. They choose two jazz standards to work through. 'Bye Bye Blackbird' is a song from 1926 sung by crooners like Gene Austin. Didn't take off as a jazz standard until it was recorded in 1956 by Miles Davis. The other song from the 1920s, 'Softly As In A Morning Sunrise' written for an operetta at the time had been picked up by jazz artists from Artie Shaw to Miles Davis, Milt Jackson to John Coltrane and many others."

BOOTHMAN & KYSOFUSION BAND, MICHAEL Can't Stop Dancing 12"
"After his success with the 'Michael Boothman Sound' and 'What You Won't Do For Love', a song Michael had recorded in 1980 with Charmaine Forde he decided to change his musical direction again. Once again, he incorporated Calypso and other Caribbean musical genres in his music. In the early 1980s he rebranded the 'Michael Boothman Sound' as 'Kysofusion Band'. Change and experimenting has been an important part of Michael Boothman's career since the 1960's when he started with his first group The Rockerfellas playing contemporary pop music. During the 1970 revolution in Trinidad and his experiences at the QRC Jazz Workshop The Rockerfellas evolved into Family Tree, a band that experimented with African rhythms, Calypso, Jazz, Funk and Latin music. A few years later The Michael Boothman Sound was born which was a Caribbean Pop/Disco project. The name Kysofusion Band is based on the name of the musical style 'Kaiso', a type of popular music in Trinidad & Tobago that has its roots in West African music and evolved into Calypso music. The band had many different line-ups over the years but the core of the band were Michael Boothman, Wayne Bonnaparte , David Boothman, Barry Howard, David Batiste and Sydney Joseph. In 1985 after a collaboration with Ralph MacDonald and Keith 'Designer' Prescott on Jump With Me, Michael went into Coral studios with Designer again to record Can't Stop Dancing, a Balearic and atmospheric Disco song with Calypso influences. The song got some minor recognition on the radio and in the local clubs in Trinidad & Tobago. Can't Stop Dancing is very sought after among record collectors and has now been picked up by DJs on the international club scene and is the perfect soundtrack for a mellow summer night."

Originally released in 2000 on the now-defunct 75ARK record label, this hip hop concept album was released the same year as the Gorillaz' first 12" and is on a similar plane. Following the release of Deltron 3030, all three members participated in the Gorillaz' self-titled debut album. With Del aka Deltron Zero on vocals, Dan the Automator aka The Cantankerous Captain Aptos on production, and Kid Koala aka Skiznoid the Boy Wonder on turntables, this album takes the listener on a paranoid journey set in a dystopian year 3030 dealing with viruses, the apocalypse, an oppressive government, and a war waged against a huge company called the Corporate Bank of Time that rules the universe, all to the well-crafted and consistent musical backing of the Automator. Appearances by Damon Albarn (The Gorillaz, Blur), Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Money Mark, Paul Barman, Mark Bell (Bjork, production), Sean Lennon, and Mr. Lif compliment Del's vocal style and add the right amount of flavor to this classic period piece."

MOGARD, ABUL Above All Dreams 2LP
Above All Dreams is Abul Mogard's beautifully absorbing new album for Ecstatic -- his first since the Circular Forms (ELP 013LP, 2015) and his popular Works compilation (ELP 020LP, 2016). Counting six original pieces in its 66-minute wingspan, there's no mistaking that Above All Dreams is the most expansive solo release by Mogard to date. Taking into account its intangible divinity and cinematic quality -- the result of no less than three years diligent work -- it is arguably elevated to the level of his master opus; presenting a modular distillation of Mogard's most intoxicating strain of hauntology. Consistent with Mogard's music since the sought-after VCO tapes, c. 2012-2013, the allure to Above All Dreams lies in his ability to evoke and render feelings which are perhaps purposefully avoided in more academic echelons of drone music. Rather than a purist expression of physics through maths and geometry, Mogard voices his soul, improvising on modular synth for hours, days, months, and years in the same way a more conventional "band" develops group intuition. While hands-on, the intuitive evolution of process locates a newfound freedom in his music that implies a recognition of the metaphysical or post-physical, while Mogard explicitly points to influence from the Brazilian music of Tom Zé, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Chico Buarque, whose approach to shape and density, or perceptions of light and delicacy, also go some way to explaining the ephemeral intangibility of Above All Dreams. The results are best considered as the ephemera of non-verbal communications. From the gaseous bloom of "Quiet Dreams" to the opiated depth of "Where Not Even" to the starlit awn of "Upon The Smallish Circulation", and through the B side's keeling, 16 minute+ panoramas of "Above All Dreams" and "The Roof Falls", the power of Abul Mogard's dreams above all transcends sound, feeling, and physics in a truly remarkable way that evades words or concrete notation. RIYL: Alessandro Cortini, early Oneohtrix Point Never, Coil, Brian Eno. Master and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

SEVENTH WAVE Things To Come (Remastered & Expanded Edition) CD
"Released in 1974 by Gull Records, Things To Come was the brainchild of musicians Ken Elliott and Kieran O'connor (previously with the pioneering group Second Hand). The conceptual album was recorded at Chalk Farm Studios in London and was the result of many hours of meticulous overdubbing, with Ken Elliott playing an arsenal of keyboards and utilising the latest synthesiser technology of the day (in addition to providing vocals), whilst Kieran O'Connor played a multitude of percussion. The finished work was truly ground-breaking and in hindsight was very much ahead of its time, proving inspirational to a new generation of musicians. A stunning work of technical complexity, Things To Come was critically acclaimed and led to Seventh Wave becoming a fully-fledged touring band that would include Hugh Banton (of Van Der Graaf Generator) among their ranks. The album has now been re-mastered from the Gull master tapes and includes a bonus track of the single version of 'Metropolis' (previously unreleased on CD). This new edition of Things To Come restores the original album artwork and features an essay by Malcolm Dome and exclusive interviews with Ken Elliott, Hugh Banton and producer Neil Richmond."

VICTOR'S SOUNDNOISEFUNK, FAY Wet Robots CD
Wet Robots is Fay Victor's first album as a leader released on an American label other than her own Greene Street Music, but she is already a star on the New York avant-jazz scene. From Bradley Bambarger's liner notes: "Few vocalists have the sheer boldness -- the outright fearlessness -- of Fay Victor as an improviser. The New York native has long been a creative force on the avant-jazz scene, as a singer, bandleader, composer, arranger, and teacher. She has worked on both sides of the Atlantic with the likes of Misha Mengelberg, Roswell Rudd, and Anthony Braxton, along with recording several distinctive albums as a leader. Reviewing her recent disc Absinthe & Vermouth (2013), NPR declared evocatively that Fay's original songs sound 'as if Joni Mitchell wrote lyrics for a lost Betty Carter prog-rock album -- and it totally works.' Fay has also recorded edgy blues in a duo with guitarist Anders Nilsson, and she is an inspired re-animator of vintage instrumentals as vocal material, in the spirit of Carmen McRae in Monk ; to this end, Fay has performed with her In Praise of Ornette group and with her house-rocking Herbie Nichols Sung band. Now we have on record Fay's SoundNoiseFUNK quartet, featuring Joe Morris, Sam Newsome, and Reggie Nicholson -- each an exceptional maker of music in the moment. Although Fay enjoyed a rapport with each of these players in various combinations, this foursome had never played together as a unit before the single summer day last year when Wet Robots was captured in a Brooklyn studio. If jazz is the sound of surprise, this album startles -- a sonic funhouse of left turns. The band floats in its own space, untethered by a bass. Morris's guitar moves like a snake. Newhouse keens, taps, sighs on the straight horn. Nicholson makes his percussion set-up a skittering, rattling thing. Then there is Fay -- her voice primal and wild, as attuned to unfettered expression as Albert Ayler's tenor."

CURRAN, BUCK Morning Haikus, Afternoon Ragas LP
LP version. On Buck Curran's second solo album, Morning Haikus, Afternoon Ragas, the emphasis switches to acoustic guitar, as compared to his first solo album, Immortal Light (ESPDISK 5014CD/LP, 2016). Side A, all solo acoustic instrumentals, seems to have fallen out of a wormhole emanating from Takoma Records in the 1970s. There's some of that on side B as well, but there are also vocals and other instruments, sometimes overdubbed, and the dedication of "Taurus" to Peter Green, guitarist extraordinaire of the original lineup of Fleetwood Mac (when they were a blues band), hinting at the breadth of Curran's influences. The introduction of other timbres and textures doesn't diminish the intimate, almost meditational mood, though. Co-released by ESP-Disk' and Curran's own Obsolete Recordings. Personnel: Buck Curran - vocals, guitars, harmonium, flute, banjo; Adele Pappalardo - vocals on "Dirt Floor". Mastering by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering.

FATTORUSO, HUGO Hugo Fattoruso Y Barrio Opa CD
Far Out Recordings venture further out to Uruguay to record a new album with fusion legend Hugo Fattoruso. After a twenty-year search for the man behind the cult '70s jazz-funk group Opa, Far Out Recordings present Barrio Opa: a new work from Fattoruso and his team of world-class musicians, including the sensational Candombe drumming of the renowned Silva brothers. Recorded at Sondor Studios, Montevideo, the album is the natural development of the original Opa sound, fusing Afro-Uruguayan rhythms, jazz harmony, and heavy funk attitude, under Hugo's unique musical vision. Hugo Fattoruso went from playing in his family band at street festivals around Uruguay, to fronting Los Shakers: South America's answer to the Beatles. At the end of the '60s Fattoruso was looking to broaden his musical horizons, and in 1969 he moved to New York where he formed Opa and went on to rub shoulders with the likes of Ron Carter and Creed Taylor. Fusing Candombe (traditional rhythm of Uruguay) with rock, jazz, funk, and other Latin American rhythms, Opa created a distinctive Afro-Uruguayan voice within the global jazz vernacular, influencing a generation of musicians throughout the seventies and beyond. During the '80s Fattoruso moved to Brazil, where he continued to work and record with Brazilian artists including Milton Nascimento, with whom he composed the World Music Grammy winning Nascimento album in 1997. Fattoruso also collaborated extensively with Airto Moreia. Recorded at Sondor Studios in Montevideo's iconic Barrio Sur district, the album features some of the world class musicians at the forefront of today's Uruguayan jazz scene, including Hugo's son Francisco Fattoruso on bass, Tato Bolognini on drums, Albana Barrocas on percussion, and Nicolás Ibarburu on electric guitar. The album also features the Candombe drumming of the legendary Silva brothers, Mathías, Guillermo Diaz, and Wellington, who give the album its Afro-Uruguayan identity. In Hugo's own words "this is the sound of Opa today." The stripped back yet equally rip-roaring trio piece "Botijas" is led by Hugo's virtuosic piano playing and hypnotic wordless vocals, and backed by an inventive, heavy grooving fusion of Latin rhythms from Tato Bolognini on drums. The shining moments for the Silva brothers' Tambor playing are "Candombelek" -- a beautifully moody Afro-Uruguyan groove with characterful Rhodes and vocal harmonies -- and "Candombe Alto", a carnivalesque track, awash with soaring synth lead, wah-wah guitar, and pulsating keys.

NOGUCHI, SHUTARO Love Super Terranean LP
"Debut album by a wonderful Louisville-based guitarist/vocalist we happened upon at the 2017 Cropped Out Festival. Mr. Noguchi had recorded with Jim Marlowe on the Equipment Pointed Ankh cassette Sophomore Lounge put out (2016), but who could fucking remember that? Not us, so we were bowled over by the powerfully loud free-psych guitar set Shutaro's band played in the afternoon. FTR Boss Ted inquired of him as to whether he might have some recordings that were along the same lines. He said he did, and here they are. The tracks are partially like what his live set made us expect, but they go a lot of other dang places besides. Here the four long tracks rub against each other like adjacent bands on a PSF psych comp. The lengthiness of the song formatting allows a lot of textural motion in all directions, and the six musicians take full advantage of available latitude. The overall effect is strange and proggy, with Dane Waters' vocal overlays giving the proceedings a shiny surface they might not otherwise maintain. But the sound is wonderfully hybridized. At times its merger of prog, pop, fusionism and complexity make me think of a collision between the Glenn Phillips Band and Todd Rundgren's Utopia with Terje Rypdal sittin' in. I know I'm making it sound like a crazy quilt, and I suppose if sort of is, but only in the sense that it avoids the monochromaticism of so much contemporary music. Shutaro does not grab a single schtick and just shake it until his arm is tired. He mixes up of ballads and thunder (sometimes in a single song) in a way that strikes me as somehow very Japanese. But mostly it just strikes me about the head. In the most pleasant of ways. Take off your helmet and give it a try. You'll never know what hit you." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 250.

COLLIN, JON Water and Rock Music Volume 1 LP
"The fifth LP by English guitarist Jon Collin is also his first U.S. release. Jon first came to our attention when he started the Winebox Press label. This fairly nuts project involved choosing a wooden object (like a wine box or door) from which to create cases (some of them quite complex) for cassettes he released. The size of the edition was determined by the number of the packages he was able to create from the original object, and the label's creations were pretty amazing. Some of his early bands, like Whole Voyald Infinite Light and the Serfs were documented, along with artists like the Hunter Graccus, Chora and Taming Power. Eventually he began to issue solo recordings, and they sounded as brilliant as they looked. This led to occasional U.S. tours, interest from other labels and a worldwide explosion of all things JON COLLIN. Well, that's not all really true. But the basics are. Collin is a wonderful player, incorporating the distention of Loren Connors alongside the blues figures of Jack Rose and the lyrical melodicism of Robbie Basho. He can also throw in blurts that are pure Derek Bailey to throw the punters off, but that's his business. This new album (which will be followed in a few months by Volume 2) is a lovely example of his most evolved beauty-moves, riven with hairs and rivers of discord, but generally dedicated to expanding (rather than collapsing) the head of anyone who will take the time to listen. Make time for it. You will be copiously rewarded." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 250.

"Efsun" is the sound of Idil Mese transforming an understated, somewhat folksy instrumental of Aslan's into a bewitching and subtle musical spell. On "ghost station", layers of meaning and recording slowly unravel, revealing a compelling soundscape.

LOWTHER & A.R.C. SOUNDTRACKS, JODIE The Blow Volume 4 Cassette
Jodie Lowther is a musician, illustrator, and video artist from the UK who mostly records minimal and ethereal songs. In all of her art, she says she is mostly inspired by dreams, surrealism, psychedelia, and horror. A.R.C. Soundtracks is the audio/visual project of K Craig and David Armes based in the north of England. Marrying bleak drones, echoed-out percussion, and FX-heavy spoken-word to disorientating, ritualistic visuals, they make for an unsettling encounter.

E-40 Federal LP
"The development of hip-hop during the 1990s is partially indebted to the styles that were cultivated on the West Coast, more specifically in the state of California. When one thinks of the California hip-hop scene invariably the G-funk of Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, and Los Angeles comes to mind, but to ignore the equally impressive San Francisco bay area scene is a travesty. It was in this environment where Earl Stevens, better known by his stage name E-40, came up in and developed his following. Alongside regional staples such as Too Short, Spice 1, and Ant Banks, E-40 was among the first West Coast rappers to sign with a major label, and scored a Billboard-charting hit record with 1995's In A Major Way. His flamboyant attitude, mixed with a driven, DIY spirit, would lead to further Billboard-charters, as well as collaborations with top-tier names of hip-hop, from California peers like Tupac Shakur, Too Short, and Keak Da Sneak, to underground legends like Tech N9ne, Bun B, and Danny Brown, to modern MCs like 2 Chainz, YG, and Juicy J, to even the company of comedy trio The Lonely Island. While E-40's break into the mainstream came with 1995's In A Major Way, he had recorded on numerous EPs and features, as well as a studio album through his own self-run label Sick Wid It Records. That studio album, 1993's Federal, would also serve as his solo debut, and paint a picture of things to come for the bay area rapper. With it's stark and aggressive sound, over top of beats that sampled classic funk and soul staples like Isaac Hayes, Sly & The Family Stone, and The Ohio Players, Federal put E-40s skills as an MC on full display, as well as promising things in the following years. Not to mention solid guest spots from his fellow Californians B-Legit, Kaveo, Little Bruce, and various others."

RAMMELZEE VS. K ROB Beat Bop 12"
2018 final repress, originally released on RSD 2014. "On split black & white vinyl reissue of ultra-rare 1983 hip-hop masterpiece co-produced & with artwork by the late Jean-Michel Basquiat. The original issue of the 1983 song Beat Bop by lyricists Rammellzee and K-Rob has been heard by many, but held by few. Only a reputed 500 of the song's initial run, on Jean-Michel Basquiat's one-off Tartown Records label, were made with jacket cover art by the infinitely influential graphic artist (and moonlighting musician and producer). They remain one of hip-hop's 'Holy Grail' items, selling north of $1,500 if you can even find one. The audio, which clocked in at over 10 minutes, was issued -- with no picture sleeve -- on Profile Records soon after the Tartown pressings, and went on to influence countless MCs, with its minimal, languishing funk beat (produced by Basquiat) and Rammellzee's and K-Rob's next-level lyricism. The picture sleeve version of the release has never been officially re-issued, and this edition, curated by hip-hop historian Noah Uman, goes the extra mile. It features officially-licensed original artwork from the Basquiat estate and a four-panel folded insert with deep background on the original single's creation, compiled by Andrew "Noz" Nosnitsky -- including interviews with many of the artists involved with its production: Rammellzee, K-Rob, Glenn O'Brien, percussionist Al Diaz, Profile's Cory Robbins and more. Rammellzee left this Earth in 2010 and Basquiat passed away in 1988 -- with this deluxe reissue, their important contributions to the formative years of hip-hop on wax are remembered and celebrated. A must-own for any hip-hop purist."

LEBRON BROTHERS, THE Llegamos/We're Here LP
"The venerable Cotique existed at the juncture where Afro-Caribbean music met the rootsy sounds of soul and R&B that blossomed in the United States during the '60s and '70s. Some of the finest albums in the boogaloo and Latin soul genres were recorded for this label, including sessions by Joe Bataan, Johnny Colón and Larry Harlow. Cotique's product was marked by a refined aesthetic and unerring good taste -- consider Machito's foray into R&B idioms on the Soul Of Machito LP. The label was also wise enough to invest in down-to-earth salsa, recording New York's ultimate barrio orchestra, The Lebrón Brothers. The Lebrón Brothers celebrated their 50th anniversary in the business in 2016. Their career spans five decades of doing things uniquely and uncompromisingly in their way: making funky, gritty, streetwise and relentlessly swinging music that mixed Spanish lyrics, Latin tunes and English-language R&B/soul-oriented numbers. 'Lebrón Brothers are the only other band (besides Willie Colón) to arrive during the boogaloo era and survive long after boogaloo was dead and buried,' comments Ray Rosado, leader of Maña. 'I believe that for these two bands, boogaloo was merely a means to an end.' Originally called Angel Lebrón and his Orchestra in 1965 (co-founded by Puerto Rico-born brothers Angel on bass and José Lebrón on piano,) they changed their name to Lebrón Brothers at the suggestion of George Goldner (1918-1970) when they signed to his Cotique Records label during the peak of the 1966-1969 boogaloo craze. The eldest, Pablo Lebrón, sang Spanish lead vocals with the band until 1981 -- when sadly, he suffered a stroke. Between 1967 and 1982, the band recorded 16 albums for Cotique, during which time brothers Carlos and Frankie joined on bongo and conga, respectively. The multitalented José and Angel wrote and arranged most of the material. Fania Records took over Cotique in the early '70s and drafted star bandleader Larry Harlow to produce one of the band's albums and Johnny Pacheco, the label's co-founder, to produce another three. Reportedly, Fania boss Jerry Masucci (1934-1997) tried to persuade the Lebrón Brothers to replace Pablo with a younger, thinner white lead singer. Proud of their Afro-Boricua heritage, they resisted and were consequently excluded from major industry opportunities. Angel and José eventually took over the reins of production on the band's 14th Cotique release in 1980, and Angel took the producer credit on the remaining two albums for the imprint (Frankie produced a one-off return to Cotique in 1998). 'On all of their recordings, the coro is precise, the swing formidable and the message is both timely and seemingly prescient. That's more than enough to make up for whatever naïveté one might observe in their recordings at first blush,' says John Walsh, trumpeter with the Grammy Award-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra, who began playing with Lebrón Brothers in the mid-'80s. 'And then there's the vibe. When they walk on stage, they made their presence felt: five or six of them, not one under six feet or less than 225 pounds!'"

HARDRIVE Deep Inside 7"
"With the Masters At Work name under contract elsewhere at the Peak of their career, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega had little choice but to work under other names for their Strictly Rhythm projects. Hardrive became popular, largely thanks to the iconic 'Deep Inside' whose vocal hook (from, Barbara Tucker's 'Beautiful People') and bass line helped made the track become one of house music's most memorable hits. 'Sometimes a record just manages to capture and distill the true essence of what this is all about and 'Deep Inside' is one such record, it bears all the hallmarks of golden era Masters At Work, all the signposts of what was happening in NYC's clubs in the early to mid 90's were there within its grooves. You know a record is good when it's still being, quite literally, hammered nearly 25 years later". It's no surprise even Kanye West would sample this classic to make another chart-topping track! HASSELL & BRIAN ENO, JON Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics LP+CD
2018 repress. Gatefold LP version on 180 gram vinyl with CD. Originally released in 1980, Jon Hassell and Brian Eno's collaborative album Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics is a sound document whose ongoing influence seems beyond dispute. Not only is the album a defining moment in the development of what Eno coined as "ambient music" but it also facilitated the introduction of Hassell's "future primitive" trumpet stylings and visionary "Fourth World" musical theories to the broader public. These vectors continue to enrich contemporary audio culture. Eno's ambient strategies are now fixed in the DNA of electronic music and the cross-cultural legacy of Hassell's "Fourth World" concept is apparent not only in the marketplace genre "World Music" but also more persuasively in the accelerating number of digitally-driven, borderless musical fusions we now experience. By the time that Eno and Hassell met, Hassell's experiments with a "Fourth World" musical vocabulary were well underway and in fact it was because of these experiments, particularly Hassell's debut album Vernal Equinox that Brian Eno purposefully sought him out. Within a couple of months of Hassell's performance at The Kitchen the duo entered Celestial Sound in New York City and began work on what would become Fourth World Music Vol. I: Possible Musics. Hassell invited previous collaborators like the Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and the Senegalese drummer Ayibe Dieng to join the sessions. Most of the tracks carry a Hassell/Eno writing credit, though the 20-minute "Charm (Over 'Burundi Cloud')" was a carryover from Hassell's concert repertoire. Hassell has made it clear in several interviews over the years that the album's shared billing was at least partly inaccurate and that Eno's contribution was mainly as a producer. More spiky, angular and steeped in rhythm and exoticism than most of Eno's records and more drone-based, reflective and sonorous than most of Hassell's outings, Possible Musics -- whatever the actual division of labor in sound and concept -- is a seminal highlight in both of their discographies. A meeting of two of the late 20th century's most restless and prescient musicians, the album sounds as beguiling, indeterminate and otherworldly today as it did 34 years ago when it was originally released. The impact of Possible Musics on the contemporary music conversation was almost immediate. Just ten days after it was mastered, Brian Eno and David Byrne convened in Los Angeles to continue experiments inspired in part by Hassell's musical theories. The resultant album would be called My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. All parties involved agree that Ghosts was originally conceived as a trio project that included Hassell but the idea fell apart over disagreements about logistics and musical direction. Hassell still remains bitter about what he considers the projects un-credited appropriation of his musical signatures. From there it was a short jump forward to the chart-topping, Afro-futurism of The Talking Heads Remain in Light, an album that Eno co-produced and Hassell guested on. "Fourth World" strategies have echoed, and can still be heard echoing in the music of Peter Gabriel, Nils Petter Molvaer, Björk, David Sylvian, David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Damon Albarn, DJ Spooky, Jah Wobble, Matmos, 23 Skidoo, Goat, Bill Laswell, Mark Ernestus, Adrian Sherwood, and of course, the ongoing projects of Eno and Hassell themselves. Glitterbeat is proud and honored to re-release and re-introduce this compelling, groundbreaking album.

EDWARDS & ALEXANDER HACKE, DAVID EUGENE Risha CD
Glitterhouse present the first collaboration album from David Eugene Edwards and Alexander Hacke entitled Risha. The two have had a connection since the early days of 16 Horsepower and collaborated on the reunion album American Twilight by Australian indie rock outfit Crime & The City Solution (2013). Finally, they found the time to record this astonishing piece of an album. Hacke on their relationship: "David and I have been admirers of each others work for some time. We first got to play together for The Glasshouse, a movie project initiated by my wife Danielle de Picciotto and during the brief resurrection of Crime & The City Solution all three of us were involved with. Shortly after I worked on Wovenhand's Laughing Stalk album as a mixing engineer (2012). We became close friends during these very diverse collaborations and started talking about creating music together, which would combine electronics with ethnical instruments and overdriven guitars with oriental rhythms and scales." Over the last two decades, Edwards's prolific work in both bands, 16 Hosepower and Wovenhand has influenced and inspired a generation of musicians. Alexander Hacke is primarily known as a longtime member of German industrial music group Einstürzende Neubauten and one of Germany's most influential experimental artists. For Risha, David Eugene Edwards recorded all vocals, guitars, and string instruments; Alexander Hacke played keyboards, bass, drums, and electronics. Together they created an astonishing and hypnotical soundscape and atmosphere on their first full-length album. Risha cannot be described in traditional terms. This sound is a sweeping tapestry of Americana, neo-folk, industrial, ambient, electronic, and Arabic music. Risha -- which means "Feather" in Arabic -- contains ten parts: Beginning with the mystic "Tryptyc" which is followed by the furious beat of "All In The Palm". Hacke and Edwards keep the pace with "The Tell" and its driving industrial rhythm and break it down completely with the fourth track, "Helios". "Kiowa 5" is shaped by fascinating drum patterns and the shamanic vocals of David Eugene Edwards. "Lily" is the song that is inspired most by early Wovenhand, followed by the dark and hypnotic "Parish Chief" with its almost Suicide-like vintage drumbeat, the drone excursion "Akhal", before the memorable "Teach Us To Pray" and the final and epic "Breathtaker". Each one a piece of the puzzle; made to be listened in its entirety.

So turn on your stereo and check out some tunes here. This debut album, originally released in 2014, features the German classic, vintage, retro rock sound of Wedge. BAILEY & JAMIE MUIR, DEREK Dart Drug LP
Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Jamie Muir and Derek Bailey's 1981 duo album, Dart Drug, originally released on Bailey's Incus label. Percussionist Jamie Muir was a member of King Crimson during the recording of Larks' Tongues In Aspic, in 1973. Staying less than a year with Robert Fripp, the Scot had already cut his teeth with another master guitarist, Derek Bailey, as part of the Music Improvisation Company, along with Evan Parker, Hugh Davies and Christine Jeffrey. There's no shortage of great percussionists in the brief history of free improvised music but on the strength of Dart Drug alone Jamie Muir deserves among them. Unlike for example Han Bennink and John Stevens, though, you can't hear echoes of any particular jazz drummer in Muir's playing, even if he has expressed appreciation for Milford Graves. What on earth did Muir's kit consist of? Some instruments are clearly identifiable (bells, gongs, chimes, woodblocks), while others could be anything. Old suitcases thwacked with rolled up newspapers? Tin cans and hubcaps inside a washing machine? Who cares? It sounds terrific, but if you're the kind of person who faints at the sound of nails scraping a blackboard, you might want to nip out and put the kettle on towards the end of the title track. Dart Drug is consistently thrilling, and often amusing, but it's certainly not easy listening. In music we talk about playing with other musicians, whereas in sport you play against another opponent (or with your team against another team). Why not play against in music, too? That's often precisely what happens in improvised music, and Bailey was particularly good at it. How can a humble acoustic guitar hope to compete with Muir in full flight? Sometimes Bailey's content to sit on those open strings, teasing out yet another exquisite Webernian constellation of ringing harmonics and wait for the dust to settle in Muir's junkyard, but elsewhere he sets off into uncharted territory himself. "The way to discover the undiscovered in performing terms is to immediately reject all situations as you identify them (the cloud of unknowing) which is to give music a future," Bailey evidently concurred with this spoken statement by Muir, including it in his book Improvisation (1980). Derek Bailey is no longer with us, of course, and Muir gave up performing music back in 1989; all the more reason for seeking out this magnificent, wild album.

LOS MIRLOS Los Charapas De Oro LP
Infopesa present a reissue of Los Mirlos' Los Charapas De Oro, originally released in 1975. Back in the year 1972, seven young musicians from Moyobamba, a Peruvian city and the capital of the department of San Martin located in the Amazon region of northern Peru, arrived in Lima brandishing an iconic name that would soon become legendary: Los Mirlos. The original members of the band included singer and director Jorge Rodriguez, Gilberto Reátegui on lead guitar and composing duties, Dany Johnston on second guitar, and a rhythm section made up of Manuel Linares on bass guitar, Hugo Jauregi on drums, Carlos Vasquez on percussions, and Wagner Grandez providing backing vocals. By the time of their arrival to Peru's capital, they had distilled an exotic psychedelic flavor and incredible chemistry matched only by their determination to succeed. They quickly caught the eye of the Peruvian Record label Infopesa, which was responsible for the "Cumbia Amazónica" movement that was sweeping the country at the time. By 1973, they were signed by Infopesa and began an iconic and successful career that spawned nine long plays, two compilations, and several singles, all produced by prolific music producer Alberto Maraví. It must be noted that in the midst of these classic releases there was one that became their most popular album, their third album, correctly titled Los Charapas De Oro. "Charapa" is a common nickname Peruvians use to refer to people from the Amazon jungle where it's hotter than most places in the country, and "The Oro", well, it's how they are seen by their audiences: as guys made from gold because of their incredible talent and success! Los Charapas de Oro was released in 1975 winning an instant cult following by serving up irresistible guitar-driven classics such as "Sonido Amazónico", "La Danza del Petrolero", "Cabalgando Con Ella", and "Somos Los Mirlos". This cult classic has stood the test of time and is now being considered as one of the most collectable Latin American records ever produced. Remastered from the original analog tapes at Infopesa's studio by Aldo Montalvo under the direction of Juan Ricardo and Alberto Maraví, who produced and oversaw the original mastering of the record in 1975. Artwork features a reinterpretation of the original cover by well-known Peruvian collage master Yerko Zlatar. Includes Spanish-English liner notes.

VA Spiritual Jazz 2: Europe 2LP
Limited restock. Deluxe gatefold double LP version with color inserts and on 180 gram vinyl. As the '60s progressed, cultural and political revolutions occurred both in the U.S. and in Europe. Jazz was both a victim and a savior, with radical developments in the music occurring on both continents. In the U.S., artists took control of their own musical destiny as small labels broke away from the mainstream, expressing new and creative visions of freedom and peace against a backdrop of civil unrest, repression and war. In '60s Europe, the jazz community forged ahead with a different revolution; that of breaking away from mere emulation of their American counterparts. A distinctive, European jazz sound began to develop that combined traditional music from across Europe and around the world with the creative freedom so abundant in American jazz. Over time, the most forward-thinking creative talents of the post-Coltrane European jazz generation crafted and nurtured sophisticated and multi-faceted styles of jazz that were as radical as they were beautiful, giving modern jazz a characteristically European flavor. The music is a heady mix indeed; stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, festival performances recorded live from the grassy heartlands of central Europe, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and flamenco folk music. This is spiritual jazz, European-style. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes.

Over the course of a decade and a multitude of singles and three full-length albums, the project has morphed -- emanated -- into a collaborative, jazz-influenced, outward-facing globally-inspired collective. 2015's The Light Years Of The Darkness album release was a key turning point and a record that saw Woodmansey work with a stellar cast of contributors featuring amongst others Keiran Hebden, aka Four Tet, and trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah. Born in 1975 and growing up in Sussex, music was part of Nick's life from an early age as his dad Mick ("Woody") Woodmansey was the drummer with Bowie's Spiders From Mars. His father instilled in him a life-long passion in drums, teaching him the basics. Plans to go to art college were shelved after he moved to London in 1991, squatting in Dalston, and ensconsing himself in the London music scene. A few years later Woodmansey took a 12-month gig playing drums on a cruise ship, before returning to the UK and spending the next decade playing on the London scene in various projects whilst raising a family -- it was there he decided to go it alone and so in 2006 Emanative was official. The Earth record encouraged Nick to delve deeper into his spirituality.

For his inaugural EP under new guise Yem Gel, NTS Manchester resident and visual artist Alecs Pierce comes through with a four-track cacophony of sounds for Kick + Clap. From previous experimental outings as Obsidian Pond, Gristed Petunia, and Handi Dogh, he returns with this new project based solely on electronic compositions, giving the multi-instrumentalist artist a chance to further explore his electronic leanings. The Yem Gel moniker seeks to live up to its name's reference to malleable "fictional future plastics" by offering a set of genre-spanning compositions, drawing from multiple influences from ambient, drum 'n' bass, or grime.

RESIDENTS, THE RMX CD
"The Residents are fiddlers. Not fiddle players, just fiddlers. They like to play around and see different ways their songs could sound. They call this RMX. Some say RMX stands for 'remix' but with The Residents, who knows? While the RMX concept is mostly associated with two album projects (The King and Eye RMX and WB:RMX), The Residents had also tinkered with individual songs. These were released as free streaming tracks on the band's official MySpace page (yes, they had one). In 2007 most of these tracks were collected in a compilation simply titled RMX, first made available on iTunes. Never before have this tunes been available on a physical release, so we are now glad to present you RMX as a CD including two previously unreleased rmx's! New cover artwork by Pore Know Graphics."

FOX, HARDY Nachtzug CD
"Hardy Fox used to be composer for The Residents for over four decades. He later released solo albums under the name Charles Bobuck before finally switching to his real name in 2017. After Heart, Nachtzug is his second solo album. In the beginning, this release was intended to become a TOOK release - simply releasing Fox's sketches for The Residents' Ghost Of Hope album. But this idea soon turned out to be not challenging enough, so Hardy started using his original sketches as the basis of an entirely new recording. In the end, The Night Train became such an exciting album that we trashed the TOOK idea and made it a Klang release. It's too precious to be a limited edition, too good to be heard only by a few. The inspiration came from a real train journey, says Fox, towards the end of his time with The Residents: 'It was nothing special. I needed to be in Zürich for a show and caught the last train leaving Vienna. Eight hours of rolling down the shiny tracks. Plenty of time to think. Too much time to think. Nachtzug, the night train, understands beginnings. Nachtzug, the night train, comprehends ends.'"

VIOLENT QUAND ON AIME Violent Quand On Aime LP
Coming from different regions in France, Violent Quand On Aime's members have joined forces to canalize their energies into something truly essential. Far away from hype and expectation they have created their own peculiar world. Expect a certain electronic griminess with hints of '90s hip-hop, postpunk alienation, and an affinity for musique concrète. The overall experience is similar to the excitement one feels when hearing something genuinely original. This mini-album is the follow-up to their very impressive 7" on Le Syndicat Des Scorpions (2017).

With "Drei Millionen Ko?lsch", Voigt continues to establish his savvy "way into sound", which he's pursued by turning genre cliche?s into a defiant mix of the deepness of a lonesome cowboy and his implicit faith in the dancefloor. "Augen Zu" by T.Raumschmiere is one of the most beautiful masterpieces of bass-heavy "Umta Umta" techno. VA Le Pop 9: Au Debut CD
The new Chanson generation, re-modernized and reshaped! A new generation of artists is born to shake up the French pop scene. It isn't without reason that the Le Pop 9 compilation is subtitled Au Début: 16 new French artists, none of which have ever appeared on a Le Pop compilation before, hereby introduce themselves. The modern sound of the current French pop scene allows for its listeners to rediscover the creativity of chanson-pop in all its different facets. The 2018 generation is influenced by electronic sounds and production styles deriving from R&B and hip-hop. The two brains behind Polo & Pan are DJs, Hollydays' singer is a Rihanna fan whilst her partner prefers Amon Tobin and Aphex Twin. Whoever sees the high achieving Angèle on stage will be perplexed by her dance moves -- until one finds out her brother is the famous Belgian rapper Roméo Elvis. And there's more: Ezéchiel Pailhès first appeared in electronic duo Nôze whilst the George Moustaki prize winner Laurie Darmon drifts from chanson into speech song and stands beside a human beatbox performer on stage. La Femme, awarded twice by the Victoire de la musique, showcases their Francophone indie pop with four keyboards on the stage. No trace of guitar rock nostalgia of the old times. And in "Poésies" the singer Chaton's voice is made foreign through autotune effects, so that the song becomes a subtle reminiscence of modern dancehall. In comparison to the cool naturalness of Flavien Berger, arguably the central figure of the new scene, many bands aiming for international success with their average English are made to look like wannabe hipsters. The wealth of ideas hidden behind Ali Danel, who for instance reinterprets a Paul Éluard poem onto an Afro-beat backdrop, seem in line with a contemporary re-appropriation of Gainsbourg's "Percussions" principle -- without making it sound a little out of date. But the special thing about it all is that, in its very essence, the music remains chanson. The language and words define the genre, with voices central to the production and melodies remaining frameworks in which the songs are structured. And so, Le Pop 9: Au Début is simply another piece of evidence of the vitality and vibrancy of a genre that is being constantly renewed musically amidst changing frameworks and thus remaining perpetually fascinating. Also features Pomme, Eddy Crampes, Alexia Gredy, Adrien Soleiman, Achille, and Gérald Kurdian.

YOUNGE PRESENTS, ADRIAN Voices Of Gemma LP
"In the great and ongoing culture war between high and low, raw and refined, the real versus popular, certain territories have been ceded: styles considered mainstream get to be pretty, lovely and optimistic. Styles originating underground are presumed to be gritty, burly and practical. So it's a subversion of a kind, and definitely an intellectual challenge, to bathe a foreboding bass line in a lilt. To make gloomy shine. To trojan horse some heavy feelings in a delicate vocal. Adrian Younge's Voices of Gemma embodies the potential of the hybrid. By just saying no to the borders a label like underground might impose on a creativity like his, he's able to fashion a sound that elbows its way past your defenses, whatever they are. You don't want to hear anything grim today? Had enough of that on the news, thanks? Younge has a couple of angels on hand to waft a hard truth over so that when it hits it feels like a kiss. Sick of the saccharine piped over aisle 4 at Walgreens? Younge's palming you a melody fit for impending doom. Voices of Gemma comes from Younge's refusal to accept the premise. His stance is there in every artist's job description ? the determination to suction up sounds and flavors and phrases from all over the past and present and imagined and documented, and then splice and dissolve what he finds into more possibilities and new ways of seeing, something fresh. On this project his songs are precise, the set ups delivered with a satiny finish and, in the low end, just a hint of louche. His characters are lyrically poised, but when it comes to their emotional lives, as portrayed melodically, it's one cliffhanger after another. Younge's female leads take up residence in their upper register, a fairytale landscape pierced only once by a man's voice. The dreamy, internal feeling singers Brooke deRosa and Rebecca Engelhardt conjure up is tethered to the earth by music that's filmic and deeply intelligent. Here there are easter eggs left in accent notes and fills. Care has has been given to every detail, and the old way of doing a thing (bring in an orchestra, record to tape) is the way its done; it's like listening to a five-star hotel. Voices of Gemma is luxurious, a style that we forgot could be present day, as accustomed as we are to sampled and thrice-removed versions of it. This is high-class signified, a world-class realization."

YOUNGE & ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD, ADRIAN The Midnight Hour CD
"The Midnight Hour is Black excellence: an ode to the cultural sophistication that the Harlem Renaissance established for its people. The Midnight Hour is comprised of Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge, alongside a tight rhythm section and a full orchestra. The album has features from CeeLo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Masha Ambrosius, Bilal, Eryn Allen Kane, Karolina and more. Adrian and Ali began working on this album back in 2013, but put the project aside as they would score the hit Netflix series Marvel's Luke Cage (the two even perform in an episode of the upcoming second season). The Midnight Hour is a soul/jazz/hip hop album which continues the conversations started by yesterday's jazz and funk pioneers; those that created the bedrock of samples for hip hop producers in the 80s/90s. The Midnight Hour is sophisticated hip hop that fans will enjoy, capturing their jazz rhythm section, and a full orchestra, to analog tape. One of the seminal compositions, 'Questions' originally began as an unfinished Midnight Hour demo with Cee-Lo Green. However, Kendrick Lamar heard the track and wanted to sample portions for his GRAMMY-winning album To Pimp a Butterfly (the song ultimately made it to Kendrick's 2016 compilation Untitled Unmastered as 'Untitled 06 | 06.30.2014.'). The full, completed version of 'Questions' is now the lead single on The Midnight Hour. 'So Amazing' is a reimagining of Luther Vandross' 1986 single. Ali and Adrian took Luther's original vocal stems and composed new music, as if they were in the room with Luther originally. This transcendental recording is something that really makes The Midnight Hour special."

SCHULZE, KLAUS Das Wagner Desaster 2CD
"Re-Release of the impressing Klaus Schulze album Das Wagner Desaster - Klaus Schulze talks about Das Wagner Desaster: 'The title of this album, The Wagner Desaster, has its origin in a concert that was given on the occasion of a Nietzsche conference in Rome. Those who know a lot about music history and philosophy know that Friedrich Nietzsche at some point turned again Richard Wagner and gave him a roasting. This was because Wagner had once told him to stop composing music as he wasn't capable of doing it! Nietzsche took this so personally that he was finished with Wagner. For Wagner, who had actually respected Nietzsche, this was very much a real disaster!' This double-CD contains two different mixes of concert recordings from Rome and Paris in 1994. The 'Wild Mixes' are done by Andrè Zenou, who also designed the cover. The Soft-Mixes were by Klaus himself. As bonus track we added the encore from the 1991 Schulze concert in Sevilla."

3 NA MASSA Na Confraria Das Sedutoras LP
3 Na Massa was founded by Rica Amabis with Pupillo and Sucinto Silva (aka Dengue) in Sao Paulo. Pupillo and Dengue play drums and bass while Rica is the magic cook, the producer of the trio. This is also where the band name stems from, 3 Na Massa -- "three in the dough", slang for something that makes your mouth water in expectation of a special treat. And special it is. The idea of 3 Na Massa came from women. Women talking about their amorous experiences with men -- moments, events that marked their life, whether seduction or desires. The songs are inspired by the sensuality of these stories. They can be happy, entertaining as well as spicy and longing like an erotic adventure in an amusement park. Under the influence of Federico Fellini's films and the work of Serge Gainsbourg of the '60s and '70s, the music could easily be the soundtrack of the illustrated stories of Millo Manara. The debut album release, Na Confraria Das Sedutoras originally released on CD in 2008, is the stories (songs) of 12 different women who collaborated with the trio to create this trip through the large emotional world of women. Lending their voice to the songs are some of Brazil's favorites: Céu, Nina Miranda, Thalma De Freitas, Karine Carvalho, and Alice Braga, among others. Rica Amabis is a producer and sound engineer working in music since 1994. In 1999 he released his first record titled Sambadelic, a fusion of Brazilian music and electronic beats. In 2000 Rica founded the studio/production team Instituto in which he and his team produced and composed music for albums such as Nacão Zumbi, Otto, Z'Africa Brasil, film (The Invador, Seja O que Deus Quiser, Arido Movie, Baixio das Bestas, Cao sem dono), amongst many other special projects. Pupillo and Sucinto Silva (Dengue) are members of the very popular fusion rock band Nacao Zumbi. Pupillo is also a partner of the label Candeeiro which includes artists like DJ Dolores, China, and Mundo Livre. He has played on recordings by Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, and others. After ten years since its release in 2008, this amazing album gets its first version in vinyl. Also features Leandra Leal, Karine Carvalho, Geanine Marques, Cyz, Simone Spoladore, Nina Becker, Pitty, and Lurdez Da Luz.

TOURIST KID Crude Tracer LP
Tourist Kid's first release for Melody As Truth, Crude Tracer. Recorded in Perth and Melbourne between 2016 and 2017. Though the idea of movement between two places could be a somewhat romantic afterthought, a more palpable sense of dislocated unease creeps up on the listener throughout the album. On "Discourse II", stutters of digital trash segue seamlessly into a plateau of serene, glassy ambience -- and on "Bacterial", the hiss and sting of rehashed foley seems to dance around a plaintive, oh-so delicate piano solo. These striking contrasts are deftly managed, playing upon notions of digital noise and ambient, while never feeling weighed down by the limits of reference or gesture. Indeed, numerous touchstones to Tourist Kid's earlier work -- and to that of contemporaries -- are synthesized and expanded upon to great detail and atmosphere. Crude Tracer sits in its own adeptly nuanced and assured space. Tourist Kid's production encompasses all manner of tangible and otherworldly sounds as a vehicle to explore something far more intriguing than a simple instrumental fetish -- so much so that the overwhelming sting of blasted detritus or a broken and bent vocal is capable of eliciting such delicate impulses as glistening, heart-wrenching piano chords. It's a unique -- and very special -- kind of beauty that Tourist Kid gracefully achieves with Crude Tracer.

JONSON, MARC 12 In A Room LP+CD
Munster Records present a reissue of Marc Jonson's 12 In A Room, originally released in 1992. Self-recorded and produced, Marc Jonson's second album came out in 1992, two decades after his debut, the psych folk/baroque pop masterpiece Years (MR 379LP). 12 In A Room was another brilliant display of his gift for beautiful pop music, now available on vinyl for the first time. Includes CD."... 'A melody comes into my head 'da-da-dah-da, show me some mer-cy' and I start thinking is that some Motown song from the Sixties? And I go uh-oh, no it isn't, it's mine. I gotta write it down.' So he runs into a candy store and buys a Bic pen and a pad. And then he goes up there to his room, the timeless teen-space where everything stops, where he does his dreaming and his scheming, laughs at yesterday and puts it on tape. From the ELOish opener to the cosmic 'Love Radiates Around', from the Bardo-haunted love ballads to the drowning 'Larry Stein', from the dire conditions of "Cold Weather" to the dire straits of 'Desperate', all the songs on this album were written, recorded and produced in that little 11x14 foot room high above Cornelia Street on a four-track TEAC. It's a little like making your own movie and playing all the parts. Clouds go by -- no clock ticking --night comes down -- guitars strumming -- pulse of the street -- drums smack -- reverb -- mix down to two track -- crash 'till late afternoon -- call up to play it over the phone -- can you hear the words? I'm hungry -- wanna get a bite with me and walk around? But there's a little of the mad scientist, too. 'It's where I get in touch with the thing.' Marc at the controls -- turning all the knobs -- he's everybody in the whole universe and he's blasting off. Head exploding 'till it fits the whole room. Head is room. Room alive! 'A song is a collection of the way a certain period of time feels,' he says. That's where the real weather is, inside." David Dalton

VA Interferencias Vol. 2: Spanish Synth Wave 1980-1989 CD
In the early '80s, futuristic music existed that triumphantly anticipated another musical era for a number of groups that worked on alternative circuits in Spain. Tradition, trajectory and future: these three words sum up a movement that was castrated at birth and sought to bring plurality and nuance to a monolithic cultural scene that was too predictable, commercial and stale. The musical texture of synth pop, experimental electronic music, and the incipient primitivist industrial sound of groups like Esplendor Geométrico or Orfeón Gagarin came up against a lack of social participation that supports a popular and broad-based culture. Both volumes of Interferencias seek to do their bit in the odyssey to disseminate rarities from the Spanish musical heritage dating from the '80s, when the dictatorship was over. In this era, there was a conflict between those who wanted to break with the past and those who preferred designer camouflage. In this second volume of Interferencias the series continues to explore the interest and attraction of the new sounds back then, which were a kind of pressing need for these embryonic gurus of techno pop, who held on tight to their next-generation instruments as if they were symbols of the post-Francoist advance party. These bands appeared in the middle of the transition to democracy, a strange small breakaway movement, but popular with the minorities on the margins of the dominant and official artistic system. This new movement was anointed by one key idea, namely, moving beyond the discrimination surrounding the use of synthesizers in order to recreate emotions. Adopting a modern attitude, they hung out outside major record label circles but keeping an eye on the media, which was already putting their music out there, exemplified by their sporadic appearances on television programs such as Musical Express or La Edad de Oro. Interferencias closes this analytical search for our synthetic and minimalist musical heritage; adopting a respectful, historically accurate, heterodox and undogmatic approach. These sounds embody the perplexity, paradox and confusion of those years, which disconcerted audiences through the use of innovative musical language and discourse and provoked a lack of understanding and enthusiasm in equal measure. Features Muzak, Diagonal, TV Soviética, Orfeón Gagarin, Esplendor Geométrico, Logotipo, Jan, Claustrofobia, De Picnic, Fanzine, Q, Demian, Flash Cero, Flácidos Lunes, Betty Troupe, Manía, Minuit Polonia, Heroica, V Generación, and Programa. JONSON, MARC Years LP
Munster Records present a reissue of Marc Jonson's Years, originally released in 1972. More than four decades after its original release, a minor album by an obscure artist from the Vanguard catalog is finally reissued on vinyl. There are recordings on the Vanguard label by more famous artists than Marc Jonson, and discs that far outsold Years (1972) -- but this collection has stood the test of time. Years is not only a stunning debut, but a harbinger of the promise of a young artist. "Rainy Dues" kicks off Years with a tersely honest statement and proceeds to expound on that with a series of observations and claims about a relationship whose literal nature is nebulous but whose emotional reality is dense. "Mary" is a musical sequel to the opener which treats with wonderful lyrics as well as powerfully evocative singing. "Mother Jane" remains a mystery after 30-plus years, but you don't need to understand it to enjoy it -- the pondering is a prize in itself. Side A ends with "Fly", an existential lament depicting alienation from others and self. Listen for the additional voices coming in near the end of the song on the word "fly" with a simultaneous harp flourish. "A Long Song" is the metaphoric and literal centerpiece of the album, falling precisely at the midway point. It's sweet and tender, with a narrator sure of himself. The brief "Autopsy", with its five lines, sung twice, carries a hefty poignancy with a melancholic tune. "Return To The Relief" is a lyrical and musical adventure. The carnival ride of this song finishes with a musical reference to Jackie DeShannon's 1969 popular single "Put A Little Love in Your Heart". "Munich" is the only song on the album which feels "dated" in any way -- one can hear the influence of "Revolution 9" from The Beatles' White Album (1968). The title could obliquely refer to the hostage taking at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany -- the havoc of that event mirrored by the fragmented song. The final track is "The Tredmill" which features a constrained and dulcet voice singing in front of a muted piano, interpolated with occasional drum. In Years, Marc Jonson deftly inserts brilliant production values to songs already possessing beautiful melodies and poetic lyricism. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

LEGENDARY TIGERMAN, THE Misfit LP
The Legendary Tigerman is all about roots, the essence of things, always keeping it real, gritty and true. From 2001 to 2006 he recorded three records that established him as one of Europe's best kept secrets, playing festivals from Japan to Brazil. In 2009 he released Femina, a record about women with special guests like Asia Argento, Peaches, Lisa Kekaula, Becky Lee, Phoebe Killdeer, Cibelle, Maria de Medeiros... A year later the record was platinum in Portugal and one of the records of the year for newspapers and magazines such as Les Inrockuptibles, Rock & Folk, Telerama, El País, among many others. Sold-out shows, festivals, praise from the press... The secret was out. In 2014, True sees the daylight though the light is much darker, much more complex. It's rock & roll but with orchestras and brass and drums with truth on every corner, shape or sound coming off from this outstanding record. In the words of Lindsay Hutton, "True comprises the type of music that really has been known to save souls." Touring extensively across Europe, Brazil, Mexico, or China, The Legendary Tigerman took on the rock & roll ride full on, no more a one-man-band, now touring as an amazingly powerful trio with drums and baritone sax. The story of The Legendary Tigerman's awaited sixth album, Misfit, starts with a road movie, How To Become Nothing, a three-head project by Paulo Furtado, Rita Lino, and Pedro Maia. In May 2016, the trio landed in LAX to film a psychedelic adventure in the form of a road movie between Los Angeles and Death Valley, about the philosophically disturbed journey of a man searching to become nothing. During two weeks of traveling, Paulo "Tigerman" Furtado spent his days writing the diaries of this imaginary man, acting, while at night, in motel rooms across the California deserts, armed with a Gibson SG, he started writing the songs of Misfit. The album was recorded at Rancho de La Luna, Dave Catching's legendary studio in Joshua Tree, in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Co-produced and mixed in Paris by Johnny Hostile (The Savages, John & Jehn) at Pop Noire Studios.

IN CROWD, THE Am I Glad To See You/Blow Up 7"
"In the second half of 1966, The In Crowd -- singer Keith West, guitarist Steve Howe, bass player John 'Junior' Wood and drummer John 'Twink' Alder -- were undergoing a radical musical transformation, replacing their soul and R&B covers with more innovative original material. . . . The two songs The In Crowd recorded for Blow Up [by Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni] were shelved and remained unissued until the late 1990s. They encapsulate a thrilling moment of metamorphosis as a uniquely gifted group emerged from its mod chrysalis and unfurled its psychedelic wings for the first time." --Mike Stax, Ugly Things

BIBILONI, JOAN El Sur LP
2018 repress; LP version. Staying on the Mediterranean coast for their third release, Music From Memory this time shift their attention to the work of Mallorcan musician Joan Bibiloni. Primarily a guitarist, Bibiloni was creating music at an early age, releasing his first single at the tender age of 15. In his '20s he formed Spanish prog-rock outfits Zebra and Euterpe, where he would meet Pepe Milan, the two of them becoming the bluesy folk duo Milan & Bibiloni. Bibiloni himself would later go on to play with a number of luminary musicians such as Larry Coryell, Daevid Allen and John Cage, to name but a few. In 1982, Bibiloni set up his own label Blau in order to highlight the much-overlooked work of musicians not only on his home island of Mallorca but across the Balearic Islands. In doing so he created a platform not only for local talent but also for his own music to breathe a new life, much influenced by the landscape and life that surrounds the islands. While Bibiloni's first solo releases on his Blau imprint have stronger echoes of the contemporary jazz fusion of the time, it is on the album known as Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila where Bibiloni really began to experiment with new sounds and technologies; fusing tape loops, drum computers and synthesizers. Taking these more electronic-infused works as a departure point for the compilation and drawing on material from across his following five albums, El Sur sets out to highlight Joan Bibiloni's unique ambient fusion and sun-drenched Adriatic beach-boogie.

In Bob Lamb's studio, the four members of The System set out to make a pop record very much driven by the new possibilities of technology and developments within studio recording. With instrumental tracks "Vampirella", sounding almost prophetic of Detroit techno tracks and "Pendy! You're In Some Awful Danger" a vaporous synth excursion and anthemic drum-heavy vocal track "Almost Grown", this 12" also features the unreleased "Find It In Your Eyes".

SCACCO, LORI Desire Loop LP
"I think of myself as a naturalist no matter the palette," says Lori Scacco, the New York multi-instrumentalist, composer, and electronic musician whose album, Desire Loop, is Mysteries Of The Deep's third full-length LP. Natural indeed: Scacco's music effuses warmth, enveloping listeners like a gentle embrace. Her first album, Circles, was released in 2004 on Eastern Developments, an imprint co-founded by Guillermo Scott Herren, aka Prefuse 73. She spent much of the interim period composing music for performance, film, and classical ballet, influences audible throughout Desire Loop. Flush with incandescent scree, bubbly synthesizer, and easy-going dulcet tones, the album's simplicity belies its emotional impact. At times -- "Cosmographia" and "Other Flowers", for instance -- Scacco's songwriting approaches a therapeutic purity that feels nearly virtuous, immaculate. This is by design: she wrote this album as counterpoint to today's destructive political landscape. "I had to create an empathic means of access for myself, and in turn, for the listener, using the core of all that I value as my way into the music," she explains. "I wanted to provide a vehicle for the listener to impart their own emotional experience without imposing my own meaning. I found myself returning to that space over and over again." After listening to Desire Loop, you will too. Full-color jacket, deluxe printed sleeve; 140 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

FRANK HURRICANE Holy Archives Vol. 1 LP
"Numbered, limited edition LP with hand-made covers featuring a very detailed stencil of Frank's face. Compiles some of the best of his early cassette and CDr recordings, including the first known versions of songs he later recorded in a proper studio, and which he typically stretches out into 30-minutes or more live. If you haven't seen him before, you really need to. Frank Hurricane, a.k.a. Hurricanes of Love, is an unstoppable force of nature, a crazy hippy griot, and a personified shit-eating grin all stuffed into one large meatball sub. With multiple albums under his belt via Feeding Tube Records we decided the world needed better access to some of his super rare, early cassette recordings -- which were in editions of 50 or fewer-- dating from when he first set out on the road singing and telling stories and spreading hilarious mayhem (we even hand-made the LP covers to match the spirit of the original homemade cassette art.) This is the first in a planned multi-part series of numbered limited editions of early Hurricanes of Love music. While the "freak folk" label is still accurate, some of these recordings sound a lot more traditional than you might expect? songs that usually get drawn out into 30-minute long tall-tale-ragas are here concise 3-minute fingerpicked haikus, like an Appalachian Bert Jansch, or an acid-inspired Jackson C. Frank. While the sound is sometimes a bit rough (Frank used whatever cheap cassette recorders he had) the music shines through, and will make even casual listeners say 'wow. . . who the hell is this guy?'"

LIGHTMEN, THE Free As You Wanna Be 2CD
"Drummer, bandleader and activist Bubbha Thomas had toured America with R&B revues, served as a session musician for Peacock and Back Beat Records, and played straight ahead jazz with legends before the political and social upheaval of the late 1960s led him to a path first charted by Coltrane. Free As You Wanna Be predates the deep-set, maverick jazz issued by the likes of Tribe and Strata East and is a harbinger of best of the 1970s jazz underground, a collective voice of resistance to the musical and cultural status quo. This is the first time that Free As You Wanna Be has seen reissue, and it is presented in both the issued stereo and previously unissued mono mixes as a double CD. Bubbha and his band's story is told in great detail by Houston music and cultural historian Lance Scott Walker (Houston Rap / Houston Rap Tapes) and Now-Again's Eothen Alapatt, in a booklet that contains unpublished photographs."

MARTYN Voids CD
Martyn releases the new album Voids, his first for Ostgut Ton. Over the course of 2017, Dutch-born, Washington D.C.-based producer Martyn had undergone a metamorphosis -- one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation. Having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, Martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, Detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. However, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to Max Roach's 1979 ensemble percussion album M'Boom. In his own words: "That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It's a project where he works with a slew of top-notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition . . . I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players." Over the next eight months Martyn would go on to write Voids, his first LP for Ostgut Ton and in a few other ways markedly different than previous records; it features no guest appearances or collaborations and at nine tracks, is musically stripped down to the essentials. It's also a highly personal take on forging new paths forward in genres where the Berghain/Panorama Bar resident has long been known for his production wizardry and innovation: post-dubstep and UK garage. Voids is roughly split between these musical foundations, recontextualized with elements of Nyabinghi, drum 'n' bass, and gqom to form snarling, bass-driven hybrids. In contrast to his GL Outtakes (2017), Voids is also an attempt to work through personal trauma and loss, including the passing of close friend and fellow producer Marcus Intalex, aka Trevino, to whom the track "Manchester" is dedicated. The sound of Voids is big and unapologetically rough around the edges. It is music as therapy, drawing on the healing elements of music past, but is far from retrospective. Indeed, Martyn is no stranger to electronic futurism, as his numerous solo productions for Ostgut Ton, Dolly, Hyperdub, Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Warp, and his own 3024 label (with visual collaborator Jeroen Erosie) have shown. On Voids, however, these futuristic sonic qualities coalesce into something darker, more biographical and untethered from expectations.

WIRE Pink Flag CD
"Wire's first three albums need no introduction. They are the three classic albums on which Wire's reputation is based. Moreover, they are the recordings that minted the post-punk form. This was adopted by other bands, but Wire were there first. It has been a number of years since these albums were readily available. The aim with these new vinyl and CD releases is to approximate the original statements as closely as possible, but with remastered audio. The vinyl releases have the same covers and inners as the originals (minus the Harvest logo). The digipack CDs have identical track listings to their vinyl counterparts. These versions should be considered Wire's classic 1970s albums, pure and undiluted. Usually contextualized against a backdrop of two years of the growing cultural importance of punk rock--Wire's debut Pink Flag, released in December 1977 on EMI's progressive label Harvest was in fact was something 'other.' To the keen cultural commentator, the timing and label of its release will register two essential facts about it. Firstly, too late (a year after the Pistol's debut release) to be part of UK punk's first flush and secondly that the band were signaling something beyond punk by their choice of label. Further investigation would reveal twenty-one tracks, some of them clocking in at well under a minute and covering a range of tempi well beyond the buzzsaw rockabilly that had become, even by the second half of 1977, punk's staple."

WIRE Chairs Missing CD
"1978's Chairs Missing represented perhaps the biggest conceptual leap made during this period of Wire and was widely misunderstood at the time yet it remains, to the band and production crew Wire's favorite '70s album. If Pink Flag proposed an almost cut and paste approach to deconstructing rock history, Chairs Missing proposed something more radical, a definite futurism with much less influence from its antecedents. Chairs Missing was at once more stark and more lush than its predecessor and has exerted its own influence on the course of cultural history, having laid down one of the earliest (if not the earliest) blueprints for the genuinely post-punk aesthetic."

WIRE 154 CD
"1979's 154 represented the final tableau in Wire's Harvest released '70s triptych and was the first Wire album to be released to a universal set of five star reviews from the British rock weeklies, thus it represented the point when the British 'pop culture establishment' publicly recognized Wire's primacy. '154 makes 95 percent of the competition look feeble' wrote Nick Kent in the NME, 'Wire are achieving a lot of things other--and more recognized--names have been striving for' wrote Chris Westwood in Record Mirror (a paper that had slagged off Pink Flag). 'The album is a musical tour de force' wrote Jon Savage in Melody Maker. Many said it was the album that Bowie and Eno had failed to make with Lodger (as hinted in the RM review), it was on John Lennon's playlist. Without a doubt, even if record sales did not bear it out, Wire had 'arrived.'"

CRAIG, IAN WILLIAM A Turn Of Breath (Deluxe Edition) 2LP
Recital present a deluxe edition of Ian William Craig's landmark debut album A Turn Of Breath, originally released in 2014. The first Recital album to get exceptional notoriety, here it is in its final form, with an additional LP of unpublished material. Here is the original description Sean McCann wrote four years ago for it's original release: "Recital here presents the premiere LP by vocalist Ian William Craig (b. 1980, Edmonton). Ian, a trained opera singer, delivers an elegant balance between theatrical and ambient sentiments. A Turn Of Breath combines the essence of a choral LP from Angel Records or Deutsche Grammophon with the spontaneity of experimental home-recording. This collection holds twelve works for voice and ¼" tape, recorded from 2011-2013. Voice appears as the sun's light through a vast storm; still obscured by tape malfunctions and manipulations. A system of reel-to-reels is employed, which yields a lovely sort of morphing repetition. Each iteration crumbles as more harmony is placed on top, residual tones spilling off the sides into nothingness. Craig's innate ability to sing beautiful, sorrowful melodies carries each track. The pieces on A Turn Of Breath vary from grand choral meditations to quiet interludes, and even a few impressionistic 'songs' accompanied by faint acoustic guitar. An overarching warmth resonates through each side, making this a very pleasant listen. A suitable compliment to a pot of coffee in the morning or a glass of armagnac in the evening."

WESTBERG, NORMAN After Vacation LP
Norman Westberg is perhaps best recognized for his truly individual approach to guitar with the band Swans. His playing with Swans has influenced a generation of musicians across genres. His particular approaches to that instrument, in creating both harmony and brute force, have challenged and ultimately informed a great many players. His new solo record, After Vacation, is his first full-length to come in the wake of the final Swans outing in its current configuration. More importantly it is also the first record to see Westberg move beyond a more performative mode of single take composition. After Vacation sees Westberg significantly expand his sonic palette. He opens up the tonal and harmonic possibilities of his instrument in unexpected and profoundly beautiful ways. His guitar, as singular source, becomes transformed through a web of outboard processes. He transforms vibrating strings completely, taking singular gesture and reshapes it through webs of delay, reverb, and other treatments. Moreover, he finds a new sense of space and dimension with these recordings. After Vacation has a decidedly more topographic sense. It charts out the dark contours of places unseen but imagined. It traverses a divergent range of places in search of an ever-opening compositional approach. The results are in excess of anything Westberg has created previously. His melodic capacities come to the fore; matching his distinctly personal approach to the textural qualities of his instrument. From Norman: "This is the first recording that was not done in my 'one take; it is what it is' method. For me, this was like jumping into the pool with a blindfold on! Due to this shift, After Vacation is something of a collaborative record with the very capable and caring Lawrence English, acting as producer for the sessions; taking my sounds and weaving them into finished pieces. I listen to them more as stand-alone stories, rather than my usual style of bouncing conversation. The title After Vacation came from the feeling that something was changing. Not that playtime was over, just that last week was fun and all, but now is a good time to move around into something more realized."

MOTORPSYCHO Roadwork Vol. 5: The Fantastic Expedition of Jarmyr, Ryan, Saether & Lo 3LP+2CD
Brand new recordings from Motorpsycho's 2017 European tour. New drummer Tomas Järmyr had only been in the band for three months when The Tower was recorded in March 2017, and it was a re-energized band that spent the following summer learning how to play selections from the vast back catalog and getting ready for the tour ahead. Kristoffer Lo (guitar, keyboards, vocals) was added to the lineup for greater flexibility. This volume follows in the tradition of the others, by focusing on the improvisational and experimental side of the band, taking bigger collective chances than ever before, re-imagining songs, stretching them, turning them inside out, and taking them places they've never been before. Triple-LP; Comes on 180 gram vinyl; Includes two CDs.

FRA LIPPO LIPPI Golden Slumbers: The Very Best Of LP
There are two previous The Best Of Fra Lippo Lippi releases on CD -- 1995 and 2003 (RACD 102CD) -- but this is the first on vinyl. Only having limited playing time on vinyl, Rune Grammofon had to make some tough decisions, but in the end the song selection very much gave itself. The dark horse here is "Stitches and Burns", an overlooked gem of a song from the final studio album Dreams (1990) that didn't make the previous 15-track collection but has in mysterious ways gained new life through organic streaming, with over 20 million YouTube views. Included is also "Angel" featuring the late, great Walter Becker on guitar and production duties.

ETRAN DE L'AIR No. 1 LP
LP version. Based in the Northeast of Niger, Etran De L'Aïr is one of the longest running bands in Agadez. Unknown outside of their hometown, Etran is one of the hardest working bands on the wedding circuit, playing on ramshackle equipment in true DIY aesthetic. The name Etran De L'Aïr translates to "the Stars of the Aïr," the mountainous region of Northern Niger. They are based in the town of Agadez, an urban center renowned for the electric guitar and the Western named "desert blues." In the Sahara, this electric guitar genre is intertwined with social function. It's a lucrative commerce, and gigging bands make their living in weddings, baptisms, and political events. Etran De L'Aïr is one of Agadez's longest playing groups on the circuit. Yet they are also a band that has remained on the fringes, stars of the Agadez working class. Etran De L'Aïr play a style that captures the contemporary sound of Agadez, incorporating vastly different musics into their repertoire. While Tuareg guitar follows a predictable format, Etran breaks convention and throws a third guitar into the mix. The two lead guitars solo on top of one another, in constant dialogue, with a crashing response from the drum. There is a bubbly underwater warble that emerges from reverb and crackly amps. It's electric party music, surf rock, from a place that is all beach. They differentiate themselves from the other wedding bands: "... Our music is based around traditional Takamba... and we listen to a lot of Malian music. Not Tinariwen, but musicians like Ali Farka Touré and Oumou Sangaré." Etran De L'Aïr is not just a musical group, but a family collective. The group was formed in 1995. Agadez was much smaller then, few homes were electrified, and guitars were rare. As new technology found its way to Agadez, they band adapted, amplifying the acoustic guitar with a transducer microphone, acquiring electric guitars, and finding a drum set. As the family grew, so did the band, integrating the younger siblings into the musical group. This is Etran's debut record. They claim to have written over 40 songs, but none of them have been released until now. This session was recorded live in the outskirts of Agadez. The impromptu performance drew the entire neighborhood out of their houses -- eliciting the audible clapping, shouting, and ululation. Hand assembled three-color, old school offset covers; Edition of 1000.

BROMIDE I Woke Up CD
In 2015, London-based Bromide got their electric shoes back on with new bass player Hugo Wilkinson joining long-term collaborators, singer-guitarist Simon Berridge, and drummer Ed Lush. Again, stuffed full of pop delights struggling to reach the three-minute mark -- such as "Two Song Slot", the story of a disastrous open-mic encounter turning into a last-minute victory and "Tale To Tell", a conscience-pricked near perfect example of the Bromide sound written in the studio while recording -- the album also sees the band begin to stretch their wings a bit. "Magic Coins" has an unexpected almost drum and bass inspired rhythm track while title track "I Woke Up" is a six-minute Doorsian odyssey. Elsewhere Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" is given a thorough work out, plus there are contributions from the rhythm section with Lush writing the music for both "I'll Never Learn" and "Always Now", while Wilkinson provides a breath of fresh air in proceedings with the instrumental "Futurist Shore Leave". With I Woke Up, Bromide have firmly fixed the songwriter onto the band and vice-a-versa. As one recent twitter live review summed up "They rock hard but the tunes come first: like Elvis Costello fronting Dinosaur Jr". Ain't gonna argue with that.

"Coordinate" is more reserved, but builds a killer, hypnotic groove with stripped back elements. A rock group led by Bo Anders Persson (after his works with Pärson Sound, Harvester, International Harvester), this was their first of three albums, a definitely more "rockist" continuation of the post-minimalist experiments of the earlier groups, but still with that undefinable Swedish underground feeling. Similar in vibe to the live document on Subliminal Sounds, Gardet 12.6.1970. ROTH, JAN Kleinod CD
Jan Roth's second album Kleinod will be released by Sinnbus. Five years after his gorgeous debut L.O.W. (2013), Roth delivers a real gem in the best sense of the word. Personally valuable, with light patina, various scratches, and one or two significant dents. Loaded with important stories and memories, with dignity and full of love, Kleinod is a band album. The album of a band, however, whose members prefer to leave space for each other. Roth's unobtrusive piano unites the seven other instruments played on the album, but more as an underlying texture in the background. His "all-time-favorite" bass player Alex Binder, and the "amazing" drummer Maximilian Stadtfeld, lend hand to the songs, with their airy playing, helping set the tone for the rest of Roth's album. Finally, Antonia Hausmann and Fritz Moshammer make the music shine even brighter with trombone, clarinet, trumpet, and flugelhorn. While the former were planned from the outset, the latter were just "in town for a few days, having nothing better to do.", having them there was "the magic of chance," says Roth. "These four gems made it very easy for me to play the piano." The album opens largely promising. "Herbst" sets the stage with Roth's signature, gentle and open piano. The piece draws in warm tones, less of a view of a dark winter and more a view that goes back to a long and great summer. "Boicycle" is about a boy who learns to ride a bicycle, just as the helping hand lets go of the handle bars: shaky and overwhelming at first, but alas, a proud conquer of a new freedom upon release.

Originally released in 2013; 2018 repress. Rauelsson (Raúl Pastor Medall) is probably best known for intimate guitar and vocal based songs with releases on Hush and even an appearance on the early sonic pieces album Portland Stories compiled by Heather Woods Broderick (2009). Like a coastal dream impossible to differentiate summer for winter, Vora feels like cold winds slowly warming up. Made in the time Raúl moved from Portland, Oregon back to his native Spain, settling on the east coast, you can hear the influence of the endlessly forcing waves and empty off-season tourist cities left for the remaining few to discover in peace. GRIFTERS, THE So Happy Together LP
Sorcerer Records present a reissue of The Grifters' So Happy Together, originally released in 1992. Memphis's Grifters made some of the finest recordings of Clinton-era America, with a number of albums on labels such as Shangri-La (their second and third LPs) and then Sub Pop for their remaining two albums. Their mixture of Memphis blues/roots influences, classic pop songwriting, and lo-fi aesthetics saw them as one of the shining lights of the '90s indie-rock scene. Here, Sorcerer Records reissue their first full-length LP, So Happy Together, out of circulation for over two decades. Originally released in 1992 on the Chicago indie label, Sonic Noise, which ceased operations not long after the album was released (hence many Grifters fans having never heard this very recording), the Grifters' So Happy Together is an absolute masterpiece of lo-fi slapped-together rock & roll. Less "rootsy" than their subsequent music, it sees the band navigating their way through ten sublimely inventive, non-generic "rock" tracks which beggar comparison. Well, at the time they were compared to the likes of Pavement, Guided By Voices, Trumans Water, et al. and other practitioners of stumbling no-fi sounds, but the Grifters' deft grasp of song dynamics, mixing up quiet balladry with booming guitar explosions inhabiting the same song surely puts them in their own bracket, no? In a review of the album at the time, they were claimed to be the missing link twixt the Wipers and Mission Of Burma (stealing comparisons from others), and 25 years later, such a claim still doesn't seem totally ridiculous. Anyway! The time is ripe for the world to rediscover the sheer genius of the Grifters. The Fat Possum label reissued their second and third albums, and now it's time to hear where it all began. So Happy Together comes fully remastered from the original tapes by Mikey Young. Housed in the original artwork in a heavy 425gm sleeve; Includes an insert featuring exclusive photos from the time and new liner notes from the band's Tripp Lamkins.

UWAIFO, SIR VICTOR Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-76 CD
2008 release. Guitar-Boy Superstar is the first survey of the long career of the legendary Nigerian musician, artist and poet Victor Uwaifo, one of Nigeria's greatest stars -- a long-overdue release that puts Victor Uwaifo next to other Nigerian greats better known in the West. Victor Uwaifo's mission to spread and preserve the cultural heritage of ancient Benin (Modern day Edo State, Nigeria) has seen him work as a commissioner for cultural affairs in his native Edo State, a University lecturer, acclaimed bronze sculptor and poet as well as a highly successful musician. He has been awarded Nigeria's highest cultural tribute -- the order of the Niger, and continues to teach and work today with an energy that has not abated for nearly fifty years. Cutting his musical teeth with Victor Olaiya ("the evil genius of highlife") in the early '60s, he went on to form his own band The Melody Maestros, producing Nigeria's biggest-ever selling record with Joromi in 1965, for which he was awarded Africa's first gold disc. He has continued to produce some of the most popular and engaging music in Nigeria ever since. This album focuses on his early 1970s musical output. Uwaifo invented a unique style of highlife music that he called ekassa -- based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation and just a dash of rock and soul.

Family Atlantica release their eponymous debut album through Soundway Records. At the heart of Family Atlantica are three people from three different continents: London-born Jack Yglesias, producer, multi-instrumentalist and a veteran of The Heliocentrics, his wife Luzmira Zerpa, traditional Venezuelan musician, poet and singer with a magical voice acclaimed by Manu Chao and half Nigerian-half Ghanaian percussionist Kwame "Natural Power" Crentsil. Recorded while living in an abandoned vicarage in East London, the record contains three different generations of Luzmira's family as well as a cast of musicians from the wider Family Atlantic family. One of the guests on the album, legendary Ethiopian-jazz maestro Mulatu Astatke, adds a classic touch on piano to "Escape to the Palenque," soloing in his unmistakable flowing Ethiopian 6/8 style. Also featured on the record are Senegalese Nuru Kane and Afro-Cuban group Yoruba Andabo. Much of the record was recorded by the Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto in their East London studio. In 2008, Luzmira traveled to the Sahara Desert in the south of Algeria to participate in the Fi-sahara Festival. While there, she performed with Manu Chao, who introduced her to the audience as the most beautiful voice to arrive to the desert.

VA Onda De Amor: Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were (1984-94) 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. 16 rare synth cuts from '80s and '90s Brazil, compiled by Brazilian DJ Millos Kaiser. Some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favorites from another country's musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. On Soundway's latest release -- a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, Balearic, and electro from '80s and '90s Brazil -- the tracks are picked by Millos Kaiser, one half of the Brazilian duo Selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country's best dance parties. It's a rare compilation that offers Brazilian music actually picked by a Brazilian. Whilst names such as Ricardo Bomba, Villa Box, Fogo Baiano, Electric Boogies, and Batista Junior may not be household names, they tell an untold, yet rich and important part of musical history in Brazil. The release also covers a decade that has been intentionally forgotten and brushed aside by many in the country. Onda De Amor is a release that is loaded with smooth grooves, bubbling bass, glistening synthesizers, funk-strutting guitar lines, and sheen of production that undeniably marks it of its time. For Kaiser this compilation is about reintroducing music during a period of reappraisal, catching a new wave and hoping contemporary listeners will ride it with him. "The idea is to do justice to these songs. Songs that combine all the right ingredients that should have put them on radio playlists when I was growing up or at least in the cases of more adventurous DJs." Millos Kaiser is a DJ, digger, vinyl junkie/dealer born in Rio de Janeiro and living in São Paulo for the past eight years. He launched the dance party/club night Selvagem with partner Trepanado in 2010, bringing thousands of dancers one Sunday a month to a public square in the heart of São Paulo. RIYL: Music From Memory's Outro Tempo Brazil compilation (MFM 016CD/LP, 2017), Spacetalk compilations, Sabor Do Brasil compilations, Selvagem's Boiler Room set, Mr Bongo's Brazilian compilations. VA The Weekend Starts Here! Vol. 2 10"
The second volume of the The Weekend Starts Here series deals exclusively with the popcorn genre. Popcorn is a style of music and dancing first established in Belgium in the 1970s and 1980s. The style includes a wide variety of mostly American and British recordings of R&B and pop music made between the late 1950s and mid-1960s, often relatively obscure, and characterized by a slow or medium, rather than fast, tempo. The popcorn music scene first developed from dances held at the groove discotheque in Ostend, where mid-tempo soul and ska music played by DJ Freddy Cousaert became popular in the late 1960s. In September 1969, a café, De Oude Hoeve, opened in a converted farm barn at Vrasene near Antwerp, and began holding dance competitions on Sunday afternoons. Soon up to 3,000 people began attending each week, dancing in a "slow swing" style. De Oude Hoeve was later renamed popcorn and the special genre has its name. Later on, the DJs messed up a perfectly fine recipe by adding all kinds of pop tunes as long as the tempo was right. This 10" however features 12 pure popcorn groovers from the "golden era". Features Ann Cole, Jack Costanzo, Milton Trenier, Ray Smith, Nappy Brown, Danny Rivers, Johnny Copeland, Al Perkins & Betty Bibbs, Eugene Jefferson, Chuck Bowers, Clarence Daniels, and Lew Conetta. Edition of 500.

FAFCHAMPS, JEAN-LUC H1KhH2WM (Du Seuil), a Five-letter Sufi Word CD
The third chapter in the Sufi Word's series. Jean-Luc Fafchamps on the release: "The Sufi Letters is a vast project of 28 compositions (for the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet) undertaken in 2000 and still ongoing. I am drawing inspiration from the symbolic charts found in Sufi mysticism. Each Letter is a sonic meditation on the frontiers of conscience and the paradoxes of time. Today's word, 'Du seuil' ('From the threshold'), is the third word to be released by Sub Rosa. It is a journey of sort through grief: stages of conscience, journey through hell, nocturnal anxieties, meditation, resilience. Do not worry too much though, for isn't it from the distance of death that one can shine the best light on life. Isn't all grief also a threshold?" H1KhH2WM (Du Seuil), a Five-letter Sufi Word features Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, Centre Henri Pousseur; conducted by Jean-Paul Dessy. Includes 20-page booklet.Jean-Luc Fafchamps is a pianist and composer. He studied at the Conservatoire in Mons and at Louvain University. A member of the Ictus Ensemble, he has taken part in many concert performances in large ensembles or chamber groups (performances of works by Lindberg, Reich, Aperghis, Mernier, Leroux, Harada, Francesconi, etc.) and in mixed performances, particularly accompanying dance -- multiple performances with Rosas (Anne-Teresa de Keersmaeker -- and theater -- several creations with Aperghis. He has made recordings for Sub Rosa -- with the Bureau des Pianistes and as a soloist -- of works by Bowles, Liszt, Feldman, Dallapiccola, Duchamp, Scelsi, and Berio and has contributed to numerous recordings with the Ictus Ensemble and has accompanied many singers.

ARKBRO, ELLEN For Organ And Brass CD
2018 repress. For Organ And Brass is comprised of two works by the Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro. Both works focus on tuning, intonation, and harmonic modulation. In previous projects, Arkbro composed for early music ensembles, wrote a series of durational pieces utilizing synthetic tones and processed guitars, and, most recently, presented a work lasting 26 days at the Stockholm Concert Hall. For Organ And Brass looks back to Arkbro's studies in just intonation with La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and their disciple Jung Hee Choi in New York, as well as with kindred spirit Marc Sabat in Berlin. The title composition was written for an organ with a specific kind of historical tuning known as meantone temperament. It was only after locating an appropriate instrument -- the Sherer-Orgel dating back to 1624 in St. Stephen's Church in Tangermünde, Northeastern Germany -- that Arkbro set about recording both for organ and brass and its counterpart, Three. "Hidden within the harmonic framework of the Renaissance organ are intervals and chords that bare a close resemblance to those found in the modalities of traditional blues music," explains Arkbro. "The work can be thought of as a very slow and reduced blues music." The work moves gradually through a series of long, sustained tones played by the organ and in parallel by a brass trio comprised of horn, tuba, and trombone. Arkbro's treatment of pitch resembles the tuning strategies of La Monte Young. The brass parts were performed by microtonal brass trio Zinc & Copper, a group whose repertoire has included works by C.C. Hennix and Christian Wolff. In Arkbro's words, "the brass instruments and the organ fall into patterns of interaction in which a new breathing instrument emerges." Three, which follows the 20-minute title work, deploys the same principles of harmonic relativity. In removing the organ from the instrumentation and switching to a different meter, Three acts as an intimate counterpoint to the ritual drone cycles of the title piece. For Organ And Brass was recorded in Tangermünde, Germany in September 2016. The performers were Johan Graden (organ), Elena Kakaliagou (horn), Hilary Jeffery (trombone), and Robin Hayward (tuba). Ellen Arkbro's work has been performed in Brooklyn, Stockholm, Norberg, Bologna, Gothenburg, Berlin, Birmingham, and Malmö, and on Swedish National Radio.

MEGGY Times EP 12"
Mainstay of the Berlin scene, Meggy presents Times Up. "Stay 2Nite" opens with a lush pad over crisp 808 drums and spaced-out echoes, along with Meggy's trademark R&B style vocal. "Times" turns up the house vibes with big open hi-hats and a heavy bass relentlessly driving the groove forwards. Meggy's talent to combine club functionality with emotional song-writing is just as present in "Tyler", with groovy analog goodness and tight drum machines. Meggy's huge hit "Everything" (with Rampa) finds a worthy successor in "Everything Pt. 2". A club track at its core, it's full of feeling and goose-bump-inducing chords.

GORAGUER, ALAIN La Planete Sauvage LP
2018 repress. "Animated sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage (aka Fantastic Planet), winner at Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a bizarre and beautiful film. Towering blue-skinned figures, tiny humanoids in the midst of revolt, and drug-induced Tantric sex transport viewers to a truly magical setting. Composer Alain Goraguer creates an equally hypnotic score from a palette of effects-laden guitars, flutes, Fender Rhodes, and strings. While the lush arrangements are reminiscent of Goraguer's collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1960s, space-age synth flourishes suggest a more psychedelic era. Moody vignettes flow together in tense, slow-paced funk rhythms and Baroque textures. It comes as no surprise that La Planète Sauvage has been cited as an influence on contemporary artists such as French duo Air and American hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib. Gorgeous, interplanetary soundscapes resemble the surreal meeting point between Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds and Broadcast's Future Crayon. This long out-of-print vinyl release features the original soundtrack recording and newly designed artwork. Recommended for fans of Ennio Morricone, Basil Kirchin, and David Axelrod."

The Stars On Their Horsies is not the new Current 93 album, just a lateral peek into her sidereal creek. This 39-minute CD contains only one track. Textually based around two nightmares David Tibet had recently, of which he recorded accounts of as soon as he woke from them in the middle of the night road, The Stars On Their Horsies may be seen as a sideshow peek, or perhaps a gas station carnival, and a slide into October's new Current 93 album.

JUNGLE BROTHERS Straight Out the Jungle 2LP
2018 repress. "De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric, jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tounge Massive started with the Jungle Brothers. Their debut full length Straight Out the Jungle opened up many doors that are walked through by today's artists like Mos Def, Common and even Kanye West. Their taste for jazzy horn samples helped kick-start the entire jazz-rap movement, and their James Brown fixation was one of the first. Plus, the group's groundbreaking collaboration with legendary house producer Todd Terry, 'I'll House You,' paved the way for numerous hip-house hybrids that shot up the dance and pop charts over the next few years and appeared to be a staple on every East Coast Rap Album from '88 until '92. The opening track 'Straight Out the Jungle' samples the classic Bill Withers drum break as the JB's tell you where they are coming from. 'Black Is Black' (featuring a young Q-Tip) and 'Sounds Of The Safari' introduces the pro-black edge, while the sexually subtle classics 'Jimbrowski' and 'I'm Gonna Do You' are funny, clever and timely. Hard, smart, fun, clever and brilliant, Mike G., Africa Baby Bam and Sammy G may not have realized it but they crafted a classic rap album that stands the test of time. Available here on high grade, loud pressed, double vinyl for the first time ever!"

WHITE, BUKKA Parchman Farm LP
"Born Booker T. Washington White, Bukka's trajectory as a blues performer follows a familiar template for his time. Born in Mississippi, maybe in Houston, MS -- maybe in Aberdeen, MS -- maybe in 1902, maybe in 1909 or even 1906 he recorded throughout the 1930s. Bukka even recorded while incarcerated in the Mississippi State Penitentiary aka Parchman Farm. Asked about his time at Parchman White commented 'Well, I mostly played guitar.' During the 1940s and 50s as Blues moved from the Delta to Chicago, from rural to urban, Bukka's career went dormant. And then, like many of his time, his talent was 'rediscovered' in the early 60s, in no small part thanks to a brilliant guitarist in his own right, John Fahey. Performances and all new recordings happened throughout the 60s, building interest in Bukka White's Delta roots. This compilation of White's best early material was first issued in 1969 (1970 in the US), collecting Bukka's 78s recorded for Vocalion and Okeh. His influence on rock performers of that day cannot be understated. He opened for rock bands he'd inspired at venues like The Fillmore, played his instrument in such a fashion that some said it's like he was trying to destroy that guitar, his most famous guitar, a 1933 National Duolian, was even known as 'Hard Rock.' And then there's the fact that his song 'Shake'em On Down' was so influential on Led Zeppelin that they, 'borrowed' from the song for both 'Hats Off To Roy Harper' and 'Custard Pie.' Bukka White was many things, a strong influence on his cousin B.B. King, a cotton picker, a mule driver, a hobo, a player in the old Negro Leagues, a boxer, a preacher, a convict, a factory laborer and, as celebrated here, one of America's blues pioneers."

VA Czech Up! Vol. 2: We'd Be Happy CD
Welcome to the second Vampisoul set of trouvailles from the Supraphon vaults, a series of compilations that the label launched in 2016 under the title Czech Up! (VAMPI 167CD/LP). It's a concept that the label had in mind ever since they began their collaboration with Supraphon over ten years ago, but that wasn't initially possible to accomplish due to -- luckily temporary -- licensing restrictions. In the meantime, just as Supraphon is steadily progressing with revalidating their immense back catalog, the label is now able to move along with them, picking up their cherries as they keep popping up on the notional surface. The Supraphon label was established in the early 1950s in former Czechoslovakia and has been continuously active ever since. While it's always been highly esteemed by music connoisseurs for its excellent classical music releases, Supraphon's pop, rock, and jazz music catalog, although comprising around 60,000 unique tracks, remains for the most part a big unknown to the international audience. Today it also incorporates the complete back catalog of Panton, another Czechoslovak label launched in 1967 that operated independently until the late 1990s. On Czech Up! Vol. 2, Vampisoul again present an array of astounding songs from the otherwise inglorious decade of political and social gloom in Czechoslovakia, a decade that actually started shortly after the invasion of the Warsaw Pact armies in 1968. Here's your chance to meet up with some eccentric fools, wry sarcasm, fountains of cognition, lovers approaching, lovers leaving, faunal fables, bizarre beings, wizardly seasons, ordinary oddities, unearthly gardens, morbid dreams, pretense obedience, melancholy windscapes, wishful thinking, exotic jungles, and eerie ravines. So whether you're hanging loose, shaking a leg, sampling some of this'n'that, or just opening your mind and ears widely, here's 22 more tracks that won't let you down while you're czeching up. Includes detailed liner notes by Lukás Machata. Features Olympic, Hana Ulrychová, Mahagon, Framus Five, Apollobeat, Beatings, Valerie Cizmárová, Gustav Brom Orchestra, The Blue Effect, SHQ, Metronom, Synkopy 61, Jazz Q, Vulkán, George & Beatovens, Flamengo, Eva Pilarová, Flamingo, The Soulmen, Barnodaj, Hana Zagorová, and Karel Cernoch.

GAROTAS SUECAS Futuro Do Preterito LP
On their third album, Futuro Do Pretérito, Garotas Suecas begin a new phase as a four-piece where the four musicians also share the lead vocals: Irina Bertolucci (vocals, keyboards), Tomaz Paoliello (vocals, guitar), Fernando Perdido (vocals, bass), and Nico Paoliello (vocals, drums). The album deals with a wide range of issues, from thorny political matters to sentimental troubles and even tropical fruits. "The songs were developed during 2016 in our new horizontal line-up: four singers, four musicians, four songwriters. We started recording in early 2017, at Freak studio. It's the first time that both the production and the mixing has been done by the band. The records comes completely from within ourselves, it's less referential and more organic. We chose our own formula rather than any established formulas," states Tomaz Paoliello. Futuro De Pretérito features guest musicians such as long-time collaborator percussionist Matheus Prado (Projeto Coisa Fina), saxophonist Filipe Nader (Música de Selvagem, Trupe Chá de Boldo), guitar players Marcelo Vogelaar (Holger), and Marcelo Lemos (Vruumm, Projeto Coisa Fina), and keyboardist Andre Bruni (Mel Azul, Cupin). VA Takin' Care Of Business: Soul, R&B And Garage From The Vaults Of Rampart Records 1963-1971 10x7" BOX
East LA is much more than an area located east of the Los Angeles River. Inhabited almost exclusively by Chicanos with their own way of life, there is not enough space allotted here to explain the East LA culture. Local groups like Thee Midniters, Cannibal & the Headhunters, The Blendells, The Premiers, The Ambertones, and dozens others, provided a soundtrack. In the '60s, East LA garages, where the bands rehearsed, were mined by record companies searching for the new sounds. One of the movers and shakers of this scene was Eddie Davis, who started his Faro label around 1958. Faro issued mostly pop-oriented records, but also Richie Valens-influenced rockers like "So You Want To Rock" by Chick Carlton & The Majestics. Davis formed other labels as well, like Linda and Rampart. Davis's music enterprises really took off in 1964 with three songs that were licensed to larger companies. Takin' Care Of Business consists of tracks from Eddie Davis's family of labels and it is evidence of the wonderful music made with a solid emphasis on the groove. R&B was always very important on the East Side. The included recordings by Sarah James & The Soul Babies, Thee Enchantments, The Majestics, and Sammy Lee are among the finest soul records ever recorded. One of the best R&B records cut for Faro was "Tracy (All I Have Is You)", a Ray Charles-influenced stormer by a young Barry White (his first record) backed by The Atlantics. Also featured herein are some fine party records: Little Ray's "Come Swim With Me", The Atlantics' "Beaver Shot", and The Blendells' "Huggies Bunnies" are among them. They liked to rock on the East Side, and three of the tracks included here -- those by The Romancers, The Premiers, and Sunday Funnies -- have plenty of beat, snarl, and fuzz-toned guitars. No serious East LA compilation of music would be complete without a romantic soul ballad. Dig "One Like Mine" by The Salas Brothers with The Jaguars. Davis continued his operations into the early '70s with Gordo. Many of the songs recorded for this label exuded new-found Chicano pride, such as "Via Tirado" by El Chicano and especially the two included here by Willie G with Six Pak and Two Tons Of Love. Also features: Ron Holden, The Mixtures, The Pagents, The Four Tempos, The Invincibles, and Thee Royal Checkmates. Includes a 16-page illustrated booklet.

AMSTERDAM KLEZMER BAND & SONDORGO Szikra CD
Pinnacles of klezmer and Balkan scenes merge to form single super band; Szikra is a magical collaboration between the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and the Hungarian band, Söndörg?. When playing live the bands merge into a grooving, uplifting supergroup with a totally unique sound. The first concerts were electrifying. Klezmer and Balkan fans are already looking forward to the upcoming tour. "Both bands create and play music with an open mind," says AKB bassist Jasper de Beer. "We're inspired by everything that has common ground with klezmer, Balkan, and gypsy music. Söndörg? has a similar approach, and neither band is limited by tradition. So we have a unique sound." The acquaintance with the Hungarian band was purely a coincidence, Jasper says. "On a summer's day in 2015 I stumbled upon a performance in the Haarlemmerhout. I had never heard of Söndörg?. I had no idea what to expect." It soon dawned on him that he was witnessing something special. "The musicians play on tamburas, Serbian string instruments. They mix tambura with clarinet, kaval, sax, trumpet, accordion, davul, darbuka and occasional singing together. Unbelievable. The band is super tight and they are consummate instrumentalists. You can see and hear that they've been playing together for a long time. They've developed their own style, just like the AKB." The Amsterdam Klezmer Band, which has always been in for new musical adventures, had the idea to work together with Söndörg?. In early 2017 they contacted the Hungarian band, who responded enthusiastically. April 2017 they met in the Netherlands, and got on very well, both musically and personally. Their first musical explorations burst with energy and had an intriguing new sound. Szikra (Hungarian for "spark") was born. Five months later Söndörg? returned to the Netherlands, both bands having prepared new pieces of music. After intensive rehearsals they recorded the studio album Szikra. "It sounds like these two bands have played together for years," says Benjamin of Söndörg?. "When we're together the bands integrate effortlessly, with a unique style and sound," adds Jasper. "The musical chemistry is driving everyone in the band to new creative heights."

MKWAJU ENSEMBLE (MIDORI TAKADA) KI-Motion CD
WRWTFWW Records present the official reissue of legendary album KI-Motion by Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's MKWAJU Ensemble, originally released in 1981. A highly creative and transcendental fusion of marimba, vibraphone, bamboo percussion, and synthesizers, KI-Motion was recorded in 1981 and captures the birth of Midori Takada's exploration of minimalism, African rhythmic tradition, and ambient music. The album takes its conceptual inspiration from the tamarind ("mkwaju" in Swahili), a drought resistant tree notably used to craft some of the first mallets and marimbas but also known for its culinary and medical uses, an essential symbol of life and identity for the Central African grasslands. Drawing from the region's culture and music as well as the crucial notion that rhythms represent the very fabric of life, Midori Takada leads her ensemble into environmental heaven to create one of the highlights of her recording career and an absolute must-have from the golden age of Japanese ambient -- the ideal companion to her majestic opus from 1983, Through The Looking Glass (WRWTFWW 018LP/019CD/019LP). NEGRO, JOEY Backstreet Brit Funk Vol.2 2CD
Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long-forgotten tracks from the last 40 years with the much-anticipated follow up to Backstreet Brit Funk. Volume 2 has been eight years in the making and continues to showcase the best of the genre from the late '70s to early '80s, compiled once again by Joey Negro. Brit funk is perhaps one of the UK's most under-appreciated genres. Emerging in the late '70s and taking influences from jazz, funk, reggae, and pop, by the early '80s it had spread all over the UK. Brit funk was essentially the UK's answer to underground disco. Like disco, the Brit funk scene was significant in reducing racial boundaries in the clubs and raising the profile of black and white musicians who worked together. Back in 2010 Joey Negro complied the first volume of Backstreet Brit Funk. The fact that it's taken eight years for Volume 2 to see the light of day is a testament to the both the obscurity of the records included, and the logistical challenges involved in digitizing what started life as vinyl-only releases. It's incredible how rare some of the records included on Vol.2 are and how diverse the sounds become. Though well over half the album's material comes from the likes of Touchdown, Rick Clarke, and Savanna, which have the classic slapped bass-driven Brit funk sound that many will be familiar with, it also features acts like Mercy Mercy, AD 2000, and Veira Krew who were releasing a little later in the scene's evolution, employing drum machines and resulting in more synth-based records. Paul Bailey Sound and Eastbound Expressway were earlier acts, experimenting with the disco sound, whilst I.C.Q. is a classic early '80s UK jazz dance cut that's never been released beyond the original white/green label.Double CD version (ZEDD 044CD) features Savanna, Rick Clarke, The Antilles, The Hudsons, Paradise, Index, The Oceans, Powerline, Janet Kay, Veira Krew, AD 2000, Mercy Mercy, Touchdown, Caché, Congress, Rare Moods, Kandidate, Paul Bailey Sound, Eastbound Expressway, Proton, Ritual, Cloud, Brazelia, and I.C.Q.. Paul Bailey Sound and Eastbound Expressway were earlier acts, experimenting with the disco sound, whilst I.C.Q. is a classic early '80s UK jazz dance cut that's never been released beyond the original white/green label.Part One (ZEDD 044LP) of two double LPs features Rick Clarke, Savanna, Proton, The Oceans, Kandidate, The Paul Bailey Sound, Janet Kay, Veira Krew, Rare Moods, and Powerline.
