BULKHEAD Aft Pleasure CD
Bulkhead present their debut album -- Aft Pressure -- on 2MR Records. In 2015, during the coldest Toronto winter on record, two old friends -- Pop District and Patrik Benjamin -- locked themselves away in the studio to experiment with a medley of hardware. Both solo artists in their own right, they had overseen their own projects prior, but had never considered how a collaboration might sound. Exploring the polarity of extreme cold and immersive warmth with a distinctly analog feel, the duo carved themselves an aesthetic. And so Bulkhead was born. Using a raw, organic palette they repudiate formal structure and polish, opting instead for a freeform blend of unhindered mechanical techno and fuzzy ambience -- "slambient", if you will. Debuting in 2016, their Worker's Kampf cassette album on LA imprint Far Away Tapes sold out quickly, warranting another release on 2MR featuring highlights of the cassette on 12". Continuing with the purveyance of abstract arrangements and machine wizardry, their forthcoming album -- Aft Pressure -- is a striking exploration of the intersection between frenzied techno and harmonic warmth. Fragments of techno and EBM mutate without strict guidance, rebuilding themselves into new forms with stunning physical qualities. Whilst many of the tracks might file under dance music, the DIY spirit of the album transcends a nightclub, occupying a peculiar space between the uncensored grit of the post-punk scene and some melancholic form of ambient minimalism. Angular percussion slices its way through dizzying synth leads whilst serene harmonies wander on their own accord. Darting melodies are made all the more powerful by their harsh timbre as drum-less excursions provide a cinematic backdrop. Aft Pressure is a statement of intent, blurring the parameters of dance music culture with equal doses of insanity and serenity. At the same time, it's also a hell of a lot of fun...

FIT OF BODY Black Box No Cops CD
Ryan Parks is a mixed-media artist, music producer/performer, and CEO/founder of critically robust cassette tape label, Harsh Riddims. He was born in College Park, GA and grew up skating all around Atlanta, soaking up the dense kaleidoscopic cultural ooze found both in and outside the perimeter of Atlanta. Aside from his visual practice, which usually takes shape as mixed media (Jacob Lawrence/Matisse inspired maybe) collage, he has been releasing music as Fit Of Body for seven years. Fit Of Body crafts soulful house ballads that draw on freestyle, bell hooks, old school Detroit techno, jazz, and southern rap passed through a no wave paradigm. Fit Of Body has previously released work on CGI, DKA, Ransom Note, and his own label, Harsh Riddims. Black Box No Cops is Fit Of Body's debut 2MR release, named for Atlanta hallowed skate grounds, Black Box. Ryan on Black Box: "Black Box, or Black Blocks (I grew saying the latter) is on the corner of Baker and Piedmont in downtown Atlanta. I spend a lot of time skating there. Sometimes there are other people skating there, sometimes not. I prefer it when there are other people at the blocks. Black Box is a cop free zone, you cannot be kicked out."

ROOM IN THE WOOD, THE The Room In The Wood CD
The Room In The Wood is the latest project by Paul Cavanagh and Dave Jackson. Over the past year, they have written over 30 new songs. Eleven of these appear on their forthcoming self-titled album. This batch of songs combine Jackson's lyrical storytelling with Cavanagh's exquisite guitar-stylings and make for a diverse collection that blends post-punk pop, gritty blues-folk, and velvety ballads, variously influenced by Russian fairy tales, Francis Bacon, dead oceans, swimming pool bridges, and unanswered prayers. The Room In The Wood was recorded with Steve Powell (Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band) at his Liverpool Arc studio and features (Mark Lanegan/Dave Gahan) drummer, Colin George Lamont, and drummer Jake Woodward. This is the first time Dave and Paul have worked together since their Liverpool post-punk band, The Room, split in 1985. Singer/lyricist Jackson has been writing and recording since his teens in bands such as 051, The Room, Benny Profane, Dust, Dead Cowboys, under his own name with former Shack guitarist John Head, and as Dave Jackson & The Cathedral Mountaineers. He has recorded and released ten albums with these various incarnations and, during the eighties, notched up seven John Peel sessions with The Room and Benny Profane, as well as appearing on the Whistle Test, Janice Long, and Saturday Night Live. Guitarist Paul Cavanagh has played with Chinese Religion, The Balcony, Ludus, The Room, Top, It's Immaterial, Gloss, and Moongoose, and has performed as a solo instrumentalist as Cabin In The Woods and as one of Mike Badger's Shady Trio. Paul also worked with former Room drummer Alan Wills at Deltasonic Records. CD version includes one bonus track, "Vermillion Sands".

KRAJENSKI, LUTZ Plays Hits Agogo CD
As Agogo Records celebrated its ten years anniversary in 2017, it's about time for an appraisal. Agogo Records' anniversary release is, similar to their back catalog: multi-faceted and iridescent. It's a body of work created by an exceptionally gifted jazz arranger and talented keyboarder, an analog compendium of digitally-crafted Agogo Records classics and a new and oftentimes radical re-interpretation of groovy, electronic club music that has been released via the imprint throughout the past decade. Agogo-mastermind Ralf Zitzmann commissioned arranger and piano player Lutz Krajenski, who has worked with artists like Roger Cicero, Tom Jones, and Manfred Krug in the past, to re-interpret and revisit ten classic tunes from the labels back catalog for this album. Not knowing to which places this journey would lead to Krajenski started to work on tunes originally written by Mo' Horizons, Mop Mop, Da Lata, or The Juju Orchestra and re-arranged them in a way that they obtained a new feel, a new meaning as well as a radically new sound when they were recorded with the help of various guest musicians stemming from Krajenski's inner circle of friends, as well as the singer Alana Alexander. Hailing from New York City, Alana Alexander was raised on a very distinct diet of music from an early age onwards and especially inspired by the sound of gospel choirs as her father used to be one of the most renowned preachers in the Bronx area. She's performed at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem alongside greats like Eric Benet, Faith Evans, Keiko Lee, and Angie Stone and has worked as a songwriter for the eight-time, Grammy winner, Jay Newland. From Ralf Zitzmann's perspective Krajenski left a very distinct mark on the album's sound and therefore the final outcome is way more than just an anniversary album. For Krajenski it seems like the original tunes sound more like remixes of his own reworks although the albums approach is a contrary one. This vital paradigm shift is what turns Lutz Krajenski Plays Hits Agogo into a future classic, an album that seems to become more exciting, detailed and fascinated with every listening session, weighing in an additional gem named "Us" -- an original song written by Krajenski and Alexander perfectly complementing the cover versions and reworks. Also features originals by The Hi-Fly Orchestra, The Soul Session, Una Mas Trio, and Sola Rosa.

LINEAR JOHN Double Parade CD
Is this still pop music? The new album by the Finnish multi-instrumentalist Linear John presents popular music in a new light. With Double Parade, Markus Holkko, aka Linear John, seamlessly ties in on his first album. The pop-jazz potpourri is mysteriously undefinable; a characterization of all relaxed moody situations one can only imagine. Is this still pop? Yes, because the album is absolutely suitable for the masses -- or maybe not, because it can't be put in a specific box. Sometimes it sounds just like John Coltrane, sometimes just like Kraftwerk. While one is still feeling the Latin-vibes à la Antônio Carlos Jobim, the next track surprises with a horn solo in the style of Richard Wagner. But despite this diversity, it is not an arbitrary sequence of tributes: the Finn understands how to create his songs harmoniously and melodically so forcefully that you inevitably start to feel the groove. Whenever the listener threatens to lean back into a state of in- attention, they are reactivated by new, surprising harmonic or rhythmic changes. The clever arrangements, all written by Linear John himself, offer a coherent listening experience and yet are unpredictable and somehow refreshingly different. Double Parade can't be squeezed into a corset. Clear stylistic classification, proven musical means, and established structures are skillfully expanded here, while the music is equally fascinating to experts and laymen. This is precisely why the record, a refreshing road trip through the colorful landscape of existing jazz and pop flows, is a welcome contrast to the always equal format music.

The unknown DJ then shifts to a more sensual mode with A2, where funky guitar shades and smooth chords blend with the intimate vocals. B1 is a track guided by weaving jazzy rhythms dialoguing hectically with samba and some jungle environmental recordings. B2 blesses you with some more classic vibes with a sharp string's melody and a rich bassline.

DEBUSSY/MARIUS-FRANCOIS GAILLARD, CLAUDE Debussy's Traces 2CD
Arbiter has uncovered unknown performances by musicians who reached Claude Debussy's inner life more so than those accepted as his emblematic interpreters. Marius-François Gaillard played Debussy's piano music from memory, starting in 1920 when he was twenty, receiving praise from Mme. Debussy. Each work explores an enigma that reveals itself through its individuality. Mieczyslaw Horszowski heard the composer play and brings his experience into pieces that he performed by him for over eighty years. Irén Marik played the composer throughout her entire life and had been close to Bartók, who often performed Debussy's music. Marie-Thérèse Fourneau, a lost master, takes a late work to an unprecedented height. Our restoration of Debussy himself at the piano with Mary Garden capture 1904 sounds that have finally become audible. Gailliard's Debussy recordings include early works, Suite Bergamasque, Pour le Piano, Estampes, nine Préludes, and others. Marik plays two Préludes and En Blanc et Noir. Horszowski is heard in Children's Corner Suite and Fourneau in a late Étude. Irén Marik and John Ranck also perform En blanc et noir. Most of the recordings are published for the first time and Gaillard's Debussy receives its first restoration from original shellac discs.

LICE It All Worked Out Great (Vol.1) CD
Bristol's Lice are the first signing to Balley Records -- the label run by IDLES' Joe Talbot. Drawing influence from an abrasive clutch of early post-punk groups such as The Fall, Psychic TV, Pere Ubu, and PIL, Lice's lyrics deal with subjects such as xenophobia and misogyny through first-person monologues and short-stories (designed to confront listeners with their own hateful impulses and biases). Originally released as two limited-edition CD EPs, this "early years" collection features the songs that have comprised their live set from 2016 to 2018, having been honed, changed, and finally completed. "unmissable: Lice play rockabilly hysteria at an unsustainable pace that collapses deliciously into swampy exhaustion." --The Guardian CD version includes four bonus tracks.

METRONOMY The English Riviera LP
2018 repress. Metronomy present their third album The English Riviera. The follow up to 2008's critically-acclaimed Nights Out, The English Riviera is a sonic progression of epic proportions and affirms Metronomy front man and producer, Joseph Mount, as a rare British talent. Since Nights Out, the band have swollen to a four-piece with new members Anna Prior on drums, Gbenga Adelekan on bass, original member Oscar Cash on keys/sax, and Joe himself on vocals, keys and guitar. This expansion of personnel is reflective of a new record that is mapped by vast soundscapes, incredible depth and warmth, and big pop hooks. Part love letter to the area of Devon coast Mount grew up in and part concept album about his own semi-fictionalized vision of The English Riviera, the tone for the album is set by the opening sounds of seagulls, distant waves and a Music Hall string quartet. However, any notion of whimsy is swiftly dispelled, as the seismic bass line of "We Broke Free" shudders and ushers in waves of layered guitars and synths. Having produced and remixed everyone from Roots Manuva to Kate Nash an album from Nicola Roberts, this is the first Metronomy album that Mount has taken out of his bedroom and recorded in a proper studio. The results are telling. Characterized throughout with a sense of warmth and richness, The English Riviera is in parts reminiscent of seminal 1970s West Coast studio albums from the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles, but due to Mount's studio wizardry, the record sounds vibrant and entirely of its time. Few other albums will so successfully transcend such a plethora of influences and ideas and form such a coherent body of work.

PLAGNE & CRYS COLE, FRANCIS Two Words LP
Two Words is the debut release from the duo of Canadian sound artist crys cole and Australian songwriter Francis Plagne. Building on a series of experimental live performances in which the pair toyed with possible common languages for their seemingly unrelated approaches to music, the LP's two sides present a single piece that brings together abstract texture and slow-motion song in a sonic space where genre cedes to the logic of dreams. The piece begins with a long, nearly static sequence built primarily from rubbed surfaces, using movement in the stereo field and changing mic placements to create a unified but unstable sonic environment that mimics wind, water, and breath, opening an impossible space between nature and artifice. This artificial outdoors ultimately makes room for Plagne's electric organ, which sounds a series of melancholic chords to accompany a wandering Wyatt-esque keyboard line as cole's intimate contact mic textures sizzle and pop in the foreground. From here the piece makes a surprise detour into song, as the majority of the second side finds Plagne intoning a series of obtuse two-word phrases (from a text by Berlin-based poet Marty Hiatt) to an austere organ accompaniment. Working closely with engineer and producer Joe Talia, cole and Plagne extend the studio-as-an-instrument tradition of Teo Macero and This Heat, introducing subtle yet unexpected production shifts that lead the listener from the initial austerity of the organ and voice to an oneiric space of asynchronized vocal doubles, creaking textures, and distant whistling, ultimately arriving at something like an imagined meeting of Organum and Arthur Russell. Packaged in a suitably mysterious sleeve featuring a lush work by Australian painter Anne Wallace on the front and text by Hiatt on the back, Two Words is both comforting and strange, a disorienting blend of seemingly discrepant elements. Sleeve design by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

VA Cocoon Compilation R 6LP BOX+CD
6x12" version; Comes on exclusive fluorescent vinyl which glow in the dark and create a "magical" effect while played in club; Includes CD; Edition of 500. Cocoon presents R! Few other DJs embody the ability to "think outside the box" like Frankfurt's honorary citizen and Cocoon head Sven Väth, whether he's dropping Sade's version of "Why Can't We Live Together" to close out the night or ushering in Monday morning with The Bangles' "Just Another Manic Monday". Of course Sven and Cocoon are also synonymous with techno, nevertheless, it's worth looking back over the last few years of Cocoon's output to realize strict style guidelines and exaggerated pigeonholing no longer apply. It's especially true for the compilation series, which having now reached the letter R, impressively shows the arc the Frankfurt label's output continues to span. From soft and melodic with a lot of depth to highly functional and extremely crisp -- there's a creative range on offer that very few labels can boast. Sven Väth: "I listen to and play everything that I like and that touches me. I always pack a genre-spanning record bag, I'm particularly interested in those special tracks." The current compilation, R, not only continues this idea, it is a prime example of the label's philosophy. The illustrious circle of artists on the latest compilation is peppered with such prominent names as Isoleé, Lusine, Pig&Dan, Inigo Kennedy, Ambivalent & Alden Tyrell, ROD, and Mano Le Tough. Label representative and Frankfurt original Ingo Boss is once again on board and with contributions from International Anything, John Heckle, Cristi Cons, and Eduardo De La Calle, promising new faces from further afield are also represented. Of course, all this doesn't say much about the actual content, but that's exactly what it's about. Known vs. unknown, origins, discography etc., it's not important on this collection. Cocoon delivers what the label stands for and what it does best: promoting new artists, bringing celebrity names on board and above all, not building any musical walls either on or off the dancefloor. With releases like this, it's clear to us that the journey is ongoing and the wheel will continue to spin.

VAINIO & VIGROUX Ignis LP
Mika Vainio and Franck Vigroux's brutal yet filigree electronics hauntingly come to light in Ignis, which finally discloses the further, etheric results of recording sessions that made up their Peau Froide, Léger Soleil album in 2014, their celebrated previous collaboration for Cosmo Rhythmatic (COSMO 003CD/LP). Posthumously issued following Mika's untimely death in 2017, Ignis taps into the pair's mutual respect for unsound and proprioceptive allusion, operating at liminal levels of tonal and spatial perception in a six-track LP that leaves the project with a sense of unresolved tension. Since Mika Vainio's seminal Pan Sonic group with Ilpo Väisänen ceased service in 2009, Mika found one of his sharpest foils in French multi-instrumentalist Franck Vigroux. They embarked on a lengthy creative process, articulated through studio and live performances, resulting in the powerful Peau Froide, Léger Soleil album and stacks of further recordings planned for a second release. The end results of their efforts are collected on Ignis, a set of six parts paying tribute to a mutual fascination with what lies at and beyond the threshold of sonic comprehension. Where their previous effort traded in a mix of colossal, pendulous industrial funk and abyss-baiting doom, this follow-up fully embraces the void in all its glorious mystery. From a trail of icy bleeps, "Brume" lures you into cathedral-like ice cave dimensions with breathtaking cinematic effect, before the antechamber of "Ne Te Retourne Pas" highlights those supposed dimensions with streaks of phosphorescing light to much more paranoid, imposing degrees, before calving off into the mechanical jaws of "Luxure". Deep in the beast's mouth, Vigroux bleats a forlorn vocoder message on "Un Peu Après Le Soleil", and their "Luceat Lux" gives rise to their most extreme, dynamic frequency massages, for "Feux" to wrap up the trip in a barbed wire bouquet of ravishing distortion.

BENINI, ANDREA Drumphilia Vol. 1 CD
"... a journey inspired by early African electronic music and modern beats ..."Andrea Benini's Drumphilia Volume 1 is a rhythmic experiment that sits on the fault line between traditional instrumentation and analog electronics. The project is a response to Benini's many years spent working with, learning about, and listening to African and Caribbean percussion. Traditional rhythmic influences are combined with analog drum machines and drum synths to create a hybrid sound that continues in the tradition of artists like Francis Bebey. There are no traditional harmonic instruments on the recordings -- the aim was to create melody and texture using only carefully tuned percussion instruments, whether organic or electronic. Basslines were created by blending drum synth tones with the acoustic marimbula, a traditional Caribbean instrument that was often used in place of a bass guitar. Melodies were created with everything from log drums and thumb pianos to early Soviet drum modules and the trailblazing Pearl Syncussion SY-1. Various time signatures and textures are used across the album to produce melody out of rhythm -- hypnotic, evolving tracks that celebrate and highlight the importance of rhythm in modern music. All the sessions were recorded at the Mop Mop Studio in Berlin between September and December of 2016. Written, performed, arranged and produced by Andrea Benini. Mixed by Andrea Benini and Andrea Scardovi at Duna Studio (RA) Italy. Andrea Benini - electronic drums, analog drum machines, drum synthesizers, bass synthesizers, syncussion, percussions, log drum, marimbula, kalimba, sansula; Danilo Mineo - Jew's harp; Max Castlunger - balafon, kalimba, percussions. Instruments featured include: Log drum, marimbula, kalimba, sansula, krabebs, Pearl Syncussion SY-1, Vermona DRM1, MFB Tanzbär, MFB Tanzmaus RMIF Elsita, assorted drum machines, and talkboxes. BRUXAS Sirocco 12"
Sirocco is the second EP by Bruxas, the psychedelic, beat-driven house group consisting of Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskovic, featuring Jungle By Night's percussionist Tienson Smeets. "Sirocco" washes over with dreamy, tribal, synth-wave, flowing and ebbing in mixed colors of a psychedelic haze. Remixed for some secret island hideaway orchestrated by DJ Harvey, "Sirocco (Club Version)" builds on the resplendent melodies and driving percussion of the original. "Hermes" meanwhile drives along at a casual 100bpm, with a cumbia-styled Casio line, and a jaunty Latin-groove. "Maria's Holiday" has another up-beat, Casio-styled groove, with bongo-beat rumblings and a disco rhythm.

CIPRIANI, STELVIO Quelli Della Calibro 38/L'ispettore Anticrimine CD
Digitmovies is releasing for the first time on CD Stelvio Cipriani's original soundtrack for the 1976 crime drama Colt 38 Special Squad (original title Quelli Della Calibro 38), combined with the re-release of the original soundtrack from the TV series L'ispettore Anticrimine. After forty years, the OST from Colt 38 Special Squad has been dug out and released on CD. Apart from the two songs with music by Stelvio Cipriani and lyrics by Hal Shaper, (performed by Grace Jones on the original single from Cinevox), not one single note from the score had ever been released because the master tapes had been lost for a long time. Thanks to M° Cipriani had a copy of the stereo master in good condition in his archives. The music of Cipriani alternates rhythmic passages, which play as background music to the ruthless search scenes, with a recurring romantic melody where Franco De Gemini's harmonica chimes in. In addition to the six minutes of the two songs on the single, Digitmovies recovered about seventeen more precious minutes of background music. L'ispettore Anticrimine sees police commissioner Vanni of Turin trying to catch Marseilles, the crime lord who killed his wife. Intensifying violence caused by criminals convinces the chief commissioner to form a special team of four motorcycle agents armed with unlicensed Colt 38 revolvers and headed up by Vanni. In 1993, Cinevox Records released a CD with twenty-one selections from L'ispettore Anticrimine in stereo. Stelvio Cipriani wrote a main score with a similar style to the previous films in the series The Police ..., but this time he also reprised pieces from the exciting sea battle in Tentacles. Action themes alternate with a serene love motif, with a theme for the inspector's mother ("Mother's Theme"), and with suspenseful atmospheres of soft and rare beauty. In order to fit everything on one CD, three tracks -- two repetitions of the main score and the "Crime" piece, a piece that was specially replayed by Tony Esposito after the original recording session.

2018 repress. Remastered, expanded gatefold double LP version (briefly available as a single LP in 2001 and o/p for 10 years now). Contains "Ohne Sonne" and "47 Blues," previously only available on the Japanese CD versions, as well as a new, extended version of "Happy Audio," exclusive to this release. Endless Summer, originally released in 2001 by Mego, was a breakthrough album for Christian Fennesz -- the album which brought his name and music towards the first steps of mainstream recognition. Following on from the more experimental Hotel Paral.lel (EMEGO 016CD) and the Beach Boys-homaged Plays single, Endless Summer brought the guitars more to the front, the electronics shimmered more, and the melodies shined more brightly. It went on to become a classic of its time, topping many end-of-year polls. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, September 2010.

HOT PEPPER Spanglish Movement CD
Espacial Discos present the first ever, legit vinyl reissue of Hot Pepper's Spanglish Movement, originally released in 1978. This obscure cosmic disco/Balearic/Afro gem from Mexico, originally released as a private pressing in 1978. Hot Pepper was a studio project created by Mexican drummer/producer/arranger Jesús Muñoz "Tilico" who decided to record an album in a disco-funk vein, helped by some of his friends who were top session musicians. Spanglish Movement was the result, written and produced by "Tilico", released in 1978 as a tiny private edition housed in a fabulous Afro cover. Being "Tilico," a giant drummer who appeared on countless recordings and accompanied famous figures like Paul Mauriat and Carl Tjader among many others, you can expect here lots of heavy drums, congas, and percussion, surrounded by crazy space synths, male-female vocals, Latin horns, Afro touches, and occasional fuzz guitar. Four superb long tracks including the cosmic underground club classic, "Ritual Song". Includes insert with liner notes and rare photos.

BANG! BROS. Hard Rocks Vol. 21 LP
"Unlike the last Bang! Bros. record we did (12/12/12, FTR 170LP), this one's frilly style was not dictated so much by a date as by time. According the jacket's notations, it was recorded in less than an hour in October, 2016. What? You might cry. What kind of a goddamn record can be recorded in under an hour? We'd like to point out that such live classics as Metallic K.O. (1976) and Mars Live at Artists Space (2011) were recorded inside those temporal parameters. Futhermore, we should point out that Bang! Bros. are a duo who live by the rules of real time interaction. They do not attempt to step in the same river twice. Theirs is a journey that leads only in one direction -- ever outward! The pair of musicians who are the Bang! Bros. (Mark Johnson and ARKM Foam) make a huge effort to always assure their attempts to manipulate electronic splint-chutes of all manners are observable as live events (observed either by eye, nose and ear, or ear alone). In the case of recordings, we are asked to accept the word of these gentlemen that their output is of the living variety, but they have never given us reason to doubt them, so why should we start now? The music on Hard Rocks Vol. 21 (only a few other volumes of which I have had actual access to) is the brilliant, spaced and sprongy, fast edit head wrench we have come to expect of the Bros. It delivers what I'd dare say is a full month's worth of confusion in just over thirty minutes. In this sense, it will be an incredible time-saver for many of us. Let's just get all that confusion jammed in, then we can do some chores! One can only hope that the cartoon on the back of the jacket -- in which Sam Gas Can suggests the Bang! Bros. will go and live in the jungle and forget to eat -- is just his idea of a sick joke. I mean I dunno about you, but if I had to spread my confusion out over the whole month, I'd be well and truly fucked." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 200.

VAN DEN DOBBELSTEEN, JAN Kringloop/New Adventures LP
Feeding Tube Records present the first US LP by Dutch experimental artist Jan van den Dobbelsteen. Jan has been releasing music, non-music and kinda-music on his Cosmic Volume label since 1978. Often these works are connected to visual exhibits or installations, but they also work as standalone sound events. Feeding Tube Records had been tracking Jan's work for a good long while, but it was only after Phil Milstein told them he was friends of Jan and his partner, Danielle Lemaire, that their wheels began to spin--They had sponsored Milstein's show-and-tell song-poem trip to the Low Countries. Introductions were made, and here are the most excellent results. Because van den Dobbelsteen's conceptual palette is so wide, Feeding Tube Records approached this project without preconceptions or suggestions. What he came up with was a set of wild pieces for bells of all sorts. The effect is something like a shoebox version of Charlemagne Palestine's work with carillons, perhaps crossed with one of those records documenting the sounds of mechanical toys. When pressed for a few words, Jan described it thusly: "Constructing a music machine inspired from musical automata, self-playing instruments. Music boxes, barrel and street-organs, automatic mechanical pneumatic organs. Self-playing ensemble of bells. electromechanical random clicking and tinkle. No virtuosity or individual genius. Automated musical bells generates the sounds and motion in the performance and produce richly-textured sounds and jingle while there is no need for a composer or performer. rinkelen jingle tinkle jangle chink clang clank klingelen jingle tinkle tingelen tinkle jingle rammelen rattle jingle strum jangle sputter clash kletteren clatter clang clank patter rattle jingle gerinkel tinkle jingle clank jangle chink clang klinkklank jingle clink chink tinkle jangle ding a ling ring ding ping chime tintinnabulation clink chink tinkle ring ding ping ringing chime jingle bell toll peal rumble grumble carillion." MO KOLOURS Inner Symbols LP
Anglo-Mauritian producer, singer, and percussionist Joseph Deenmamode, aka Mo Kolours, releases Inner Symbols, his third solo album. You won't find many producers quoting Plato -- Inner Symbols takes its cue from the philosopher's words "Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, charm and gaiety to life and everything'". Influences are many and all, ranging from colonization and African diaspora to Korean shamanism, Doug Hammond to Junior Byles. Mo Kolours on the release: "Inner Symbols is a musical path that begins within, and reveals itself outwardly, only to return to the inner. Themes are; introspection, truth, history, family, mental nature of reality, recognizing positivity, greed, honesty, unity, love, ignorance, lust, and of-course drums!" The entire album was created on an Electro-Harmonix looper using samples and live instrumentation and a Roland drum machine. Similarly, his energetic, improvised live show sees tracks layered up from loops of voice, percussion, and drum machine before skewing in new directions. It's a thrilling approach which has taken him to clubs and festival stages from Brighton to Brisbane, as well as to the BBC's hallowed Maida Vale studios at the invitation of Gilles Peterson. Raised on the traditional Sega music of his father's Indian Ocean homeland alongside records by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson, Mo Kolours adds hip hop, dub, soul, and other electronic styles to his individual sound. His approach could find him placed alongside Madlib or The Gaslamp Killer but he would be equally happy in the company of James Blake, Erykah Badu, Theo Parrish, or Moodymann. Along with Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Jeen Bassa, Henry Wu, Al Dobson Jr, and Tenderlonious; he's helped forge in the 22a co-operative that The FADER calls "a kaleidoscopic patchwork of hip-hop, house, and groove investigations bound by one thread: a timeless belief in rhythm as a universal language."

SUN ARAW Guarda In Alto OST CD
Cameron Stallones, aka Sun Araw, is the quintessential contemporary cosmic courier. Emerging from the fumes of an ancient Egyptian civilization and now settled in one of the meccas of the American lysergic experience, Austin, Texas, he boasts an endless discography and collaborations with luminaries of the caliber of Laraaji (a solo new age traveler discovered by Brian Eno) and the legendary Rastafarian group, Congos. For the soundtrack of the feature film Guarda In Alto (2017), directed by Fulvio Risuleo -- the daring story of a baker who has access to a parallel universe on the roofs of the city -- Sun Araw looks towards the possible horizons. Bypassing psych and electronic glitch, Sun Araw jets through a double album that seems to refer to the golden age of computer music as well as to the inventions of the Lovely Music roster -- the legendary New York label specializing in minimalism and 20th century avant-garde -- and to a certain immeasurably psychotic dub aesthetic. A disk composed of many micro-cells, which marries the adventure to the "edge of heaven" of the protagonist, reiterating that dreamy feeling that the protagonist has accustomed us to for several years now.

KEILA, KAMAL Muslims And Christians CD
"Songs about the unity of Sudan, peace between Muslims and Christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from Arabic sounds, American funk as well as neighboring Ethiopia. Kamal Keila was among the first artist we met in Sudan during our two trips to Khartoum and Omdurman last year. He is one of the key figures of the Sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in Sudan from the mid-1960s until the Islamist revolution in the late 1980s. When we meet Kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. Each tape included five tracks. One with English lyrics and another with Arabic ones. Musically you can hear the influence of neighboring Ethiopia much more than on other Sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to Fela and American funk and soul. His lyrics, at least when he sings in English which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. A brave statement in the political climate of Sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of Sudan, peace between Muslims and Christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called 'Shmasha'. A note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of August 1992. Both sessions stand as a hearable testament how Kamal Keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. BAKER, RANDOLPH Getting Next To You LP
Originally recorded at Jim Morris and Rick Miller's Tampa-based Morrisound Studios, Getting Next To You features a mixture of both local Florida talent plus jazz superstar Nat Adderley and bassist John Lamb at their finest. Originally pressed in a run of just 1,000 copies, with limited distribution, the album has long been sought-after by both collectors and DJs alike, acknowledged as a true disco masterpiece. Here, in collaboration with Randolph Baker, Kalita Records offer the four in-demand tracks from the album: "Getting Next To You", "Jazzmen", "Callin' Me", and "Party Life". The former is an in-demand horn and chant-filled disco masterpiece, which, as Randolph explains, concerns unity and "everyone on the same level... in other words, everyone just loving life". It is arguably the song that Randolph is most well-known for in the disco and funk scene and perfect for the modern discerning dancefloor. "Jazzmen" is an instrumental track with prominent trumpet and saxophone solos working with funky basslines to produce a truly great jazz-funk groove. "Callin' Me" is a soulful disco number featuring the lead vocals of Laurie Erickson and is "about being on the road and ensuring loved ones that you will always come back home no matter what. It was like a promise to ensure loved ones they didn't have to worry". Lastly, "Party Life" is a joyous disco track with a strong funk bassline and horns. Here, with access to the 24-track master tapes Kalita Records include the original version plus an unreleased instrumental take, allowing the listener to focus on the infectious bassline and make it even more ready for the modern dancefloor.

INDEX Originals Vol. 1 (1967-68) LP
"All of the original compositions from the band's two self-released holy grails of psychedelia (the Black Album and the Red Album, from 1967-68) combined into one collection -- all newly transferred from the original tapes! Most of you have no doubt heard of records that have been touted as 'mind blowing', 'fuzz monsters', or 'lost/undiscovered classics'. The raves rarely turn out to be justified. That's certainly not the case with the music of Index -- if anything, the raves underplay the essence of the band's music, which is seething with cavernous reverb, snaky guitar lines, and downer lyrics. It is fantastically minimalist, starkly atmospheric, and sprinkled with ferocious guitar work. In the mid 1960's, Detroit Michigan was a thriving industrial city. But the great ethnic diversity in the inner city was a brewing powder keg of civil unrest. This, coupled with a disillusioned population struggling to make some sense of a questionable war in the rice paddies of Viet Nam, set an uneasy and troubling tempo for the future. Still, there were pockets of communities in the Detroit area where things were good and economic life was vibrant. The Grosse Pointes were such communities. It was on the outskirts of this political and racially tense era, in those affluent suburbs just outside Detroit, that Index was formed. The music of Index has been lauded by (and bootlegged by) music heads for decades, and with good reason: it is unexpected, atmospheric, and 'home-made' in the best of all possible ways. The band has a druggie sound, with songs full of feedback and fuzzy guitars, hazy guitar riffs and loud pushy rhythms. And in there amongst the echoing canyons of sound you'll find some snotty post-punk attitude wrapped up in all that trippy velvet fuzz. It's a wonderful bleak sound, droning and murky and introspective -- the atonal side of late 1960's rock that would leave the most lasting impression on those who would eventually become punk, post-punk and indie rock... you know, artists like Joy Division or the Fall or Felt to name three out of a thousand. Includes a 4-panel color insert, written by Index drummer Jim Valice, detailing the band's rock and roll adventures, replete with rare photos."

BADEN, ASGER Zarniqa LP
From Breaking Bad to Danish films and albums, Asger Baden is a productive composer and has created music for countless films, television productions, and series. He has worked with directors such as Christoffer Boe, Nicolaj Arcel, and Martin De Thurah, and his music is featured well known productions like Breaking Bad, The Wolfpack, and VICE on HBO. Zarniqa was recorded with a 40-piece major symphony orchestra in Prague. On the album, Asger Baden chases music's untouched essence. Asger Baden is a composer and producer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. On Zarniqa, the first album in his own name, Baden creates 16 cinematic, timeless compositions with a dramatic and dense expression ranging from melancholy to an etheric ease. The main part of the album is recorded with a 40-piece symphony orchestra in the majestic Rudolfinum Dvo?ák Concert Hall in Prague. In stark contrast to the orchestra are the piano pieces, recorded solo by Asger Baden in Copenhagen. The contrast between the grand symphonic sound and the intimate piano pieces defines the album.

LUCIER, ALVIN Music On A Long Thin Wire CD
Repressed; 1992 release. First released on Lovely Music in 1980. A 50-foot length of taut wire passes through the poles of a large magnet and is driven by an oscillator; the vibrations of the wire are miked at either end, amplified, and broadcast in stereo. The thin wire is set vibrating four times at four different frequencies; what results is not the low drone one might expect from a long, vibrating wire, but a complexity of evocative, ethereal chords. Music On A Long Thin Wire is a classic example of Alvin Lucier's investigations into the physics of sound and the sonic properties of natural processes.

LOPKIN, STEPHEN Clyde Built 2x12"
Scottish producer Stephen Lopkin is back on M>O>S Recordings with a great double pack of that gleaming sound. Having released two EPs on the label since 2014, Stephen Lopkin now steps up to M>O>S with a 2x12" release entitled Clyde Built, recorded in his home town Thornliebank. The Scottish artist has been making prickly house and techno for almost a decade. His style is serene and slick, and across the ten tracks here he manages to conjure tracks that work in the club but that come with plenty of cerebral qualities. He never made it a secret that he takes a lot of influence from early Detroit techno, even several track titles pay direct homage to his musical heroes like Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, and also the track "New Euro Politique" is made in memory of the late UK producer Matt Cogger, aka Neuropolitique. "Welcome To Nowhere" kicks thing off with languid house grooves and jittery percussion, "Matrix 1000" is awash with swirling pads and astral grooves and "New Euro Politique" is a blizzard of kicks, panning percussion, and arpeggiated synths that glows bright. There are darker, driving cuts like "Fridays At Pure", trippy offerings like the title track and more thoughtful and pensive jams such as "Qinosen". The final three tracks are busy, electrifying pieces that fire every synapse with their sci-fi fx, crisp drums, and cinematic atmospheres. The whole album is wrapped up in majestic synth work and every track reveals more layers with each listen. Offering a sublimely complex house and techno sound, these tracks look back to go forwards and do so with a real timelessness.

MEISE, MICHAELA Ich Bin Griechin LP
Martin Hossbach on the release: "When Michaela Meise performed at West Germany at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg on March 20, 2015, accompanying herself on the accordion, I was perplexed. I knew her first album from 2010, which was about hymns (Preis Dem Todesüberwinder, originally released on Clouds Hill), but what she was playing weren't spiritual songs?! I wanted to put this music out on my label: the songs sounded sad, aloof and wistful but also proud, determined and unerring. The album title 'I Am Greek' (Ich Bin Griechin) is a tribute to Melina Mercouri's album Je Suis Grecque!, which was released in 1971 when Mercouri was deprived of citizenship by the Greek military junta. Mercouri lived -- like Mikis Theodorakis and many other cultural workers -- in exile. Meise's album is dedicated to the chanson scene of post-war Europe, whose songs were popularly folksy, but also political. Some talk about the experience of war, the Shoah and labor migration. Michaela Meise has translated the Greek, French, and Romanian songs into German (with the help of Aliki Marini and Carmen Gheorghe) so that the lyrics are understandable to a German audience, a gesture that was also common in the European chanson scene. More than half of the songs are by Mikis Theodorakis. He knows the translations and new recordings, gave his blessing and just noted a wrong tone... The other pieces on the album are by the French artists Barbara and George Moustaki and the German musician Alexandra. There is also a Romanian folk song. The album was recorded by Michaela Meise together with members of the group Isolation Berlin as well as the guest singers Carmen Gheorge and Dirk von Lowtzow (Tocotronic). The producer was David Specht (Isolation Berlin). Michaela Meise and me both have intimate relations with Greece -- Michaela has innumerable holiday memories with parents and brother, I have a friend who lives in Athens and whom I have been visiting regularly for about ten years now. This friend, the graphic designer Vasilis Marmatakis, styled Meise's album using an impressive, scary photograph taken in May 1985 during the occupation of Polytechnio Athens. Together, we opted for an elaborate packaging made by a bookbinder, a so-called Japanese tip-on-gatefold cover. The packaging reminds us of the records that were made in Greece for export and taken by German tourists as a souvenir back home."

BEHARIE AND TEDDY RANKIN-PARKER, MICHAEL A Heart From Your Shadow LP
LP version. Michael Beharie (New York) and Teddy Rankin-Parker (Chicago) first met while attending Oberlin College. Since graduating, Beharie and Rankin-Parker each veered into markedly different avenues. In addition to a consistent output of solo releases on NYC-label Astro Nautico, Beharie also recently joined up with the ever-confounding New York ensemble Zs, recently performed on albums by Laurel Halo, Greg Fox, and Colin Self and is a regular composer for dance and film. Rankin-Parker became an in-demand cellist for his prowess in the work of improvisation, avant-garde music, and the more exploratory realms of indie pop, lending his talents to a wide array of bands and collaborators, such as Primus, Iron & Wine, Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros, Glen Hansard, Father John Misty, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Chicago Sinfonietta, and Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble. But after a decade of geographic distance, the duo came together to write and record its collaborative debut, A Heart From Your Shadow. Rather than jump into stream-of-conscious improvisation, Beharie and Rankin-Parker chose to focus the album's themes via intricately composed pieces. The end result could be described as protest music, brimming with intense energy, harrowing anxiety, and steadfast optimism. All of this finished with a few hired hands: produced by Michael Beharie, mixed carefully by Jim O'Rourke and mastered by James Plotkin. "Intro" sets the grim scene and issues the album's M.O. A doom symphony of urban anxiety, the song shows the expansive efforts this duo is able to accomplish. "Gully" offers muted mayhem that's highly synchronized and militantly percussive. It's an anguished two-step of hope and hopelessness. The hyper-repetitive patterns almost hypnotize you into a zoned-out stupor. "Icon" is a psych-freak out of sorts, but the bombast is counter-balanced by intermittent breaks of ambient compositions. There's a deeper layer still, shown in "Smooth Face", equal parts meditatively uplifting and unsettlingly dissonant. Inner and outer anxieties resonate with actual police sirens in a swirl of tonal turmoil. "Fake Money" is a relatively laid-back drift down a river littered with musique concrète, rustic drones, and effects pedal. "Roses" veers into backlit kosmische anthems. Midway through the track, things drop out completely into an open, fog-covered scene cloudy with keyboard-vocal tones. Closer "Petaluma" offers a sweet and sincere coda, chasing a fleeting moment of spontaneous beauty. The orchestration chaos and permeated distortion of A Heart From Your Shadow is largely about healing, not fear.

VA Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe 1980-1991 2LP
Repressed. Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe 1980-1991 is the second multiple artist compilation on Music From Memory. It's compiled by record connoisseur Raphael Top-Secret and label man Jamie Tiller. The compilation brings together twenty-one tracks from across the continent; exploring the more unusual and unexpected sides of pop music produced during that period. Drawing material from cult experimental artists such as Steve Beresford, Brenda Ray, and Bill Nelson alongside one-off independent musical projects rescued from the fringes, Uneven Paths focuses on a selection of tracks that go beyond the confines of mainstream pop music but which also transcend expectations of much of the "experimental" music of the time. This is music with one foot in the avant-garde and another foot firmly rooted within the sensibilities of pop; where jazz musicians detour into synth-pop, punk bands break into boogie jams, and student doctors jam out on odd melodies with synthesizers and drum machines during their night shifts. Features Nightfall In Camp, Stroer Duo Howard Fine, Tony Hymas, Violet Eves, Miko & Mubare, Piscine Et Charles, John Makin & Friends, Nonobstant, Wolfgang Klingler, Thomas Heimes, Hans-Christian Mittag, Sound On Sound, Pete Brandt's Method, Lost Gringos, Vanakos, Brenda And The Beachballs, Patrick Forgas, Xavier Jouvelet, Lou Blic, Steve Beresford, Bill Nelson's Orchestra Arcana, Harte 10, and Monica Rypma.

WOLFF, CHRISTIAN 2 Orchestra Pieces CD
"This recording is the first ever devoted to the orchestral music of Christian Wolff (b. 1934) and thus documents a little-known aspect of his wide-ranging work. John, David (1998) introduces in its second part a prominent role for solo percussionist, playing a wide range of pitched and non-pitched instruments, including marimba, glockenspiel, a variety of drums, wood and metal instruments and other sources, the exact choice left to the performer. Rhapsody (2009), in contrast, uses instruments of the traditional Western orchestra without percussion, divided into three separate ensembles and reordered into unusual combinations and relationships, both within and between the groups. In his essay On Charles Ives (1990) Wolff remarks that in the mid-1970s he had a sudden sense of his own work as 'an odd sort of mix of Ives and Satie.' He refers to Ives's 'readiness to draw upon whatever sources are useful'; the tendency to include altered versions of popular music and hymn tunes is a feature they have in common. The unlikely conjunction of Ives and Satie may provide a clue to such disparities as are evident in these orchestral pieces: Sections reminiscent of the density and complexity of Ives, of the simplicity and directness of Satie, and of the transparency of Webern, are juxtaposed without any need to mediate or explain how they are connected. The music is continually surprising, exhilarating, and challenging; it resists easy categorisation. Sometimes engagingly direct and transparent, at other times bewilderingly complex and profuse, it invites listeners to be alert to new kinds of musical experience, to suspend judgement based on more familiar models. There is a sense of immediacy that deliberately avoids any suggestion of a general plan or underlying theoretical principle; the controlling idea of a 'grand narrative' such as is associated with composers of the European avant-garde is explicitly rejected in favour of a variety of ad hoc procedures."

VA Girls In The Garage Volumes 1-6 6CD BOX
The original groundbreaking and iconic compilation series, Girls In The Garage, is now restored and brought back to life in a deluxe six-disc set with expansive liners and rare archival photos. The sound has also been upgraded with fully remastered audio. Prior to Joan Jett, Patti Smith, Courtney Love and other era-defining women in rock, there were the girls in the garage. Like their male counterparts had discovered, being in a band was not only cool and alluring, it was sexual and ultimately political, but without the statement. The garage band was a medium that enabled their voices to be heard, and these girls weren't going to be kept in the kitchen. Like Pebbles did for the boys, Girls In The Garage captures the raw essence of those juvenile dreams played out through guitars, drums, mics and amplifiers. Prevailing gender roles would be tested as rock'n'roll became someone else's domain: the girls'. Features Denise & Co, The Puppets, The Models, The Chymes, The Bittersweets, The Interpreters, The ID, The Glass Opening, The Belles, Luv'd Ones, Kim And Grim, Lydia Marcelle, The Continental Co-Ets, The Beatle-Ettes, Cathy Rich, Althea & The Memories, The Blue Orchids, The Girls, The Ladybugs, The Bootles, The Termintes, Kathy Lynn & The Playboys, The Virginia Wolves, The Sanshers, The Whyte Boots, Lyn & The Invaders, The Daughters Of Eve, The Mam Cats, The Chimes Of Freedom, The Starlets, Laurie, Heartbeats, Patti's Groove, The Liverbirds, The Plommons, Mandy & The Girlfriends, Jean & The Statesiders, The Tone Benders, Las Dilly Sisters, Jacqueline Taieb, Ace Of Cups, The Southern Belles, Bonnie Jo Mason, The Cake, Kathy Clarke, Minnie & The Kneebones, The Supergirls, Kay Bell & The Tuffs, Feebeez, Jean Robinson, The Rums & Coke, The Sham-Ettes, The Debs, Society's Children, The Gto's, The Majorettes, The Bermudas, The Occasionals, Bente Lind & The Lunicks, The Pussycats, Jeff/The Atlantics, The What Four, Linda Gayle, Stacy's 5th, Mavricks, Tammy & The Sounds, Beatle Maids, Angel & The Devines, The Electric Lollipop, Zuma, Kari Lynn, Pat Downey & The Vistas, Dori Peyton, Cupons, Ellaine & The Shandells, Crazy Girls, Jonna Gault, Mille Rogers, Karin Krogh & The Public Enemies, Tacey Robbins, Donna Loren, Fatimas, Karen Verros, Roberta Wolfson, and Venus Flytrap.

Detroit Love present the inaugural release on their newly founded eponymous imprint -- a collaborative venture from Planet E and !K7 which aims to capture the essence of Carl Craig's superb event series of the same name. Detroit Love Vol. 1, mixed by Stacey Pullen, is a sixteen-track journey that exemplifies the diversity of the city, as well as the essence of the parties, championing both lesser known artists and familiar faces into a 74-minute mix. As a long-time resident of the party and native of the city itself, Stacey Pullen was the natural choice to launch the label. Since emerging as part of the "second wave" of Detroit techno, his heartfelt and unpredictable sets have sustained him a packed touring schedule the year round. With acclaimed mixes on Fabric (FABRIC 027CD, 2004), 20:20 Vision (2009), and Balance Music (BAL 016CD, 20015), his experimental mixing style and encyclopedic music knowledge cement his status as a true innovator in the scene. Combining artists new and old, local and international, the first mix of the series is a heady voyage into the Detroit spirit. Stacey adds: "I wanted to showcase the versatility of music from Detroit, whether it be a Detroit label or Detroit artist, the connection is there for you to grasp." His track selection predominantly represents Detroit, but also details its influence on European aesthetics, bridging the transatlantic gap. Die Regierung had a huge influence on Germany's most famous independent Hamburger Schule band, Tocotronic, but they never hit it big. Includes one bonus track, "Sprechen". Edition of 500.

LOCUST FUDGE Oscillation LP+CD
On Oscillation, Locust Fudge grab the roots of what later was to be called indie rock, turn them upside-down, and combine them with sometimes unusual and surprising elements to rewrite its history in the most organic way and beam it into the future. In 2015, Berlin-based musicians Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider) and Christopher Uhe (Krite) started recording an album together. Alongside drummer Chikara Aoshima, they kicked off something like a roots project: songs, written over the last couple of years, are tracked live as a trio. Out of infrequent sessions emerges the first Locust Fudge album in 20 years. The songs, written over a long period of time, fed by doubt and hope, by absurdity and dissolution on micro and macro levels -- personal, social, ethical -- meet the status quo with Locust Fudge-esque clear messages to the assholes of the world to "get your ticket ..." and piss off ("Light & Grace"), re-activate Dylan Thomas's often used plea "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night", examine the relationship of reason and emotion on "Oscillation", and insist on staying true to the event of love in "No Defense". In a genuine dialectical manner an album takes shape, with Schneider and Krite's symbiotic play taking up the classic work of Locust Fudge, but emerging in new forms, thus becoming something like their second debut after more than 25 years of the band's existence. It features guest appearances by friends, comrades, and colleagues, like Chris Brokaw (Come, Codeine, etc.), Lucio Capece (Vladislav Delay Quartet, etc.), Julia Wilton (Pop Tarts, Das Bierbeben), Gwendolyn Tägert (Mondo Fumatore, Half Girl), Michael Mühlhaus (Blumfeld, Die Türen), Ulrich Krieger (Lou Reed, Metal Machine Trio), J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Wolfgang Seidel (Ton Steine Scherben, Conrad Schnitzler), Werner "Zappi" Diermaier (Faust), Günter Schickert (Ziguri). and others. The album was recorded and mixed at Schneider's ZONE, a studio where he regularly produces acts like Faust, Mutter, Golden Diskó Ship, Chris Imler, Ziguri, and others. Includes CD.

VULGAR BOATMEN You And Your Sister LP
Play Loud! Productions present a reissue of the Vulgar Boatmen's You And Your Sister, originally released in 1989. In the early 1990s, the Vulgar Boatmen's first two albums, You And Your Sister and 1992's Please Panic (PL 080LP), garnered accolades from virtually every major music publication in the country, despite being barely available on the tiny Record Collect and Safehouse labels. The group's unique working arrangement (two distinct lineups, located 800 miles apart, fronted separately by songwriters Robert Ray and Dale Lawrence) received a lot of attention -- but so did their style, a melodic hypno-R&B, compared to everyone from Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers to the Feelies and the Velvet Underground. The band toured extensively in the US and Europe. Their songs were heard on both college and commercial radio -- especially "Drive Somewhere", a surprise hit on Chicago's WXRT. In the 1992 on Option Magazine Readers Poll, Please Panic placed fifth in the Best New Album category. In 1995, critic Bill Wyman called You And Your Sister the best record of the last ten years. The following year, his colleague at Salon.com, Charles Taylor, named Please Panic his all-time favorite album. In 1995, the Boatmen made their major label debut with Opposite Sex (PL 081LP), released in Europe on Blanco Y Negro/EastWest. It too received glowing reviews from the British press, but label politics at Elektra kept the album from ever getting a stateside release. In 2003, No Nostalgia issued Wide Awake, a 21-track anthology chronicling the band's career. Partly re-mixed and re-mastered. Includes liner notes by Bill Wyman, accompanied by photographs. "Crash Boat Party" is his collaboration with percussionist Hector "Tempo" Alomar. VA Scotch Bonnet Presents: Puffer's Choice Vol. II CD
Following the success of 2016's Puffer's Choice Vol. I (SCOB 007CD/LP), the label arm of Glasgow's Mungo's Hi-Fi has selected more cream cuts from their globe-trotting link-ups celebrating sound system culture. The album starts with Bim Sherman. "Lightning And Thunder" is a Mungo's remix of a vocal supplied by Adrian Sherwood. French collective Subactive's aquatic dub imagining of "Follow Me" by UK garage/grime project Wolves, featuring the voice of Bo* Johnson. Supercat straddles Chief Rockas's update of the classic Gunshot riddim for a reprise of Don Dada's 1982 hit "Dance Inna New York". The vibes then travel bang up-to-date with a sparse Mungo's fix of ethereal singer-songwriter Nem's 2017 eco-breakout "Purest Force". Jamaican chanter Isha Bel is given a belly-battering bass blend by Aquarius. General Jah Mikey, channeling Burning Spear for his own "Ites, Green & Gold", rides a deft digital riff by bald-head New Zealand-based super-producer Naram. Danny T & Tradesman build an industrial-strength base for anti-violence lament "Up Deh": a rare vocal outing from Iration Steppas' Mark Iration. Then it's time for Poland's Dreadsquad to ease the pressure with swinging one-drop vibraphone instrumental "Space". JA meets "Glasgae" for "Feel Good", an uplifting collaboration between Jamaican singer Skari and Scottish producer Escape Roots. Earl 16, wraps his pipes around Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", helmed hauntingly by Capitol 1212. Scotch Bonnet's own Thomas Stalawa gets everyone marching to a beat inspired by Steely & Clevie's "Dem Bow", as dangerous Spanish emcee Ponchita Peligros demands all in attendance "Run The Calypso". The album ends with a request from un-categorizable Israeli collective Trillion featuring General G that puffers choose wisely -- via anti-cigarette missive "No Nicotine".

LAURIE & OLLY Ample Profanity LP
Shits are not given by Laurie Tompkins and Oliver Coates on Ample Profanity; a let-it-all-out session of deviant, punkish avant-classical composition hallucinated and expectorated by two prodigious talents. An ideally off-center and brazenly wigged-out follow-up to aces from Chaines (SLP 037LP), Yeah You, and Ashley Paul (SLP 044LP) already released by Slip -- the label Laurie runs with friends between London and Newcastle. Laurie supposes and composes on keys, tapes, and samples, and Oliver does his part on cello and FX. They both sing, if your definition stretches that far. What is agreeable, though, is that Ample Profanity is a steaming pile of madness quite unlike anything else in circulation right now. Still feral from his cultishly acclaimed Heat, War, Sweat, Law album (2016), Laurie is matched by a usually more collected Coates, who, while often hardly distinguishable from the maelstrom, certainly doesn't impede the lunacy, and seems to encourage it, grasping the opportunity to freak out properly adjunct to his solo work and collaborations with Mica Levi. Kicking off with "Sniffin' Samgh", a possessed study in primal vocals and lurching, yelpy strings, the session turns variously thru quieter, asymmetric ideas in "Peejayargh" to cough up its spicy noise guts in RP Beal, before they settle into a call-and-response of quizzical sighs and plucks on "Lime Rugis" and set about hacking up a wickedly dissonant tussle between no wave guitars, intercepted phone calls, and edge-of-sanity blasts into the void with "Charterhouse Vinci". It's maybe not what you might expect from a former winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award 2011, and a graduate of the RNCM, or maybe it is. Either way, Ample Profanity is beautiful, funny, and fucked up in equally satisfying measures. RIYL: Jandek, Mica Levi, Yeah You.

CHRISTOPHERSON, PETER "SLEAZY" The Art Of Mirrors: Homage to Derek Jarman CD
"'Would you be able to stand in for me in Paris, for a tribute to Derek? - Of course! Besides, I think Gen is participating there with Thee Majesty. - Yes, absolutely. They're going to do a new performance of In The Shadow Of The Sun. - Different from the one we did as TG?! - Exactly. And I was going to create a new piece myself, different from the one Derek had commissioned me to write for The Art Of Mirrors. But something came up at the last minute and it would be a shame to miss this opportunity to pay tribute to him, which is why I'm calling you now. I assume that Derek would have been very pleased that one of us did it. - Alright, but what's the deadline? - You've got one month to get ready!' This is more or less how Simon Fisher Turner and Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson made plans one morning in July 2004 -- on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Derek Jarman's death -- in order to mount one of the greatest tributes the Étrange Festival has ever presented. Beyond his talents as a film maker, painter and botanist, Derek Jarman was an artist who seized in the best way the very essence of mutations unleashed by a whole generation, at the dawn of the 70's. As a privileged observer of the incredible deflagration brought about by the punk movement, the industrial music and gay liberation, he leaves behind him a fascinating and deeply moving work, in which the members of Throbbing Gristle, among others, took part. Unreleased before, this new work composed for several short movies is finally released. The ultimate gift from such a talented composer, and of whom there is still so much more to discover."

Swedish shoegaze trio Echo Ladies release their debut album Pink Noise which comes just a few months after their self-titled EP (SCR 134EP, 2018), which got the attention of BBC Radio 6 Music, Radio X, Beats 1, The Line Of Best Fit, and Clash, to name but a few, and sold out immediately upon release. The album mixes A Place To Bury Strangers-style total sonic annihilation with skewed synth-pop and the band cite the Cocteau Twins and The Jesus And Mary Chain as the main musical influences, but there's also a nod to The Cure's Disintegration (1989) and even Saint Etienne. Lyrically, it's all about teen angst, which explains their perfect mixture of melancholy, euphoria, anger, and tenderness. A sense of emotional confusion that is echoed by the title.

VA Tumbele! Biguine, Afro & Latin Sounds CD
...From The French Caribbean, 1963-74. 2009 release. Often overlooked in the English-speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and soaring clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the 1960s. This album showcases the vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the '60s and '70s -- a scene that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the '80s. Uptown bands like Ensemble La Perfecta and Les Loups Noirs combine heavy rhythms and psychedelic effects in an inimitable style -- check out the crazed "Jet Biguine" for a better idea. The deep and introspective sounds of Monsieur Dolor and Guadeloupean hero Robert Loison show the deep African roots of the music -- songs born out of the plantations, with an insistent rhythm and mournful vocals that are unique to these islands. Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal, and the French Caribbean for many years, this collection redresses the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and Guadeloupe -- missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the Caribbean. CD includes a 24-page booklet with detailed historical notes and rare photos. Features Barel Coppet et Mister Lof, Les Loups Noirs D'Haïti, Abel Zénon, Raphaël Zachille, Robert Mavounsy Quartet, L'Orchestre Jeunesse de Paul-Emile Haliar, Orchestre Combo Zombi et Michel Yéyé, Les Kings, Claude Rolcin et Le West Indian Combo, Anzala, Dolor, Vélo, Les Léopards, Ensemble La Perfecta, Le Ry-co Jazz, Lola Martin, Les Aiglons de Basse Terre, Les Gentlemens, L'Ensemble Abricot, Francisco, Monsieur Dolor et Les Guitar Boys, and Robert Loison.

VA Onda De Amor: Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were (1984-94) CD
16 rare synth cuts from '80s and '90s Brazil, compiled by Brazilian DJ Millos Kaiser. Some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favorites from another country's musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. On Soundway's latest release -- a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, Balearic, and electro from '80s and '90s Brazil -- the tracks are picked by Millos Kaiser, one half of the Brazilian duo Selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country's best dance parties. It's a rare compilation that offers Brazilian music actually picked by a Brazilian. Whilst names such as Ricardo Bomba, Villa Box, Fogo Baiano, Electric Boogies, and Batista Junior may not be household names, they tell an untold, yet rich and important part of musical history in Brazil. The release also covers a decade that has been intentionally forgotten and brushed aside by many in the country. Onda De Amor is a release that is loaded with smooth grooves, bubbling bass, glistening synthesizers, funk-strutting guitar lines, and sheen of production that undeniably marks it of its time. For Kaiser this compilation is about reintroducing music during a period of reappraisal, catching a new wave and hoping contemporary listeners will ride it with him. "The idea is to do justice to these songs. Songs that combine all the right ingredients that should have put them on radio playlists when I was growing up or at least in the cases of more adventurous DJs." Millos Kaiser is a DJ, digger, vinyl junkie/dealer born in Rio de Janeiro and living in São Paulo for the past eight years. He launched the dance party/club night Selvagem with partner Trepanado in 2010, bringing thousands of dancers one Sunday a month to a public square in the heart of São Paulo. RIYL: Music From Memory's Outro Tempo Brazil compilation (MFM 016CD/LP, 2017), Spacetalk compilations, Sabor Do Brasil compilations, Selvagem's Boiler Room set, Mr Bongo's Brazilian compilations. Features Ricardo Bomba, Vânia Bastos, Rosana Mendes & Grupo Veneno, Grupo Controle Digital, Villa Box, Batista Junior, Dado Brazzawilly, Anacy Arcanjo, Fogo Baiano, Dodô Da Bahia & As Virgens De Porto Seguro, Via Negromonte, Electric Boogies, Os Abelhudos, Nanda Rossi, André Melo, and Região Abissal. VA The Beat from Badsville Vol. 4: Even More Trash Classics from Lux & Ivy's Vinyl Mountain CD
Brought up on the radio shows of the legendary rock n' roll DJs, the moondogging Alan Freed, Mad Daddy and, later, the ghostly Ghoulardi, it was hardly surprising that The Cramps' Lux Interior and Poison Ivy began trawling the thrift stores for juvenile delinquent tunes, lip curling bad boy rock n' roll, strange exotica, bizarre novelty 45s, dysfunctional doo wop, psychedelic weirdness, and instrumentals made by madmen. In America in the 1950s and 1960s there seemed to be small town versions of such vinyl madness everywhere that, by the 1970s were remaindered and to the majority of people unwanted. To the fledgling Cramps this was nothing short of heaven. The duo filled their house with novelty memorabilia, schlock horror furniture, and a record collection to die for. Lux eventually gravitated to his own Purple Knif Radio show and the Cramps delivered their versions of some of the stuff they'd found. The duo name-checked many a 45 along the way and seeking them out and sampling their eccentricities is nothing short of mind-blowing. This 24-track collection positively effervesces with eccentricity. Again the release is divided into four themes: The Rock`n´Rollers, New Dance Trend, Instrumentals, and The Mad Daddies. Every track pirouettes dangerously and at times haphazardly around the expected. These are songs for strange times by what can definitely be considered strange people. Gems and nuggets that sparkle even more bright in today's manufactured music maelstrom. The population of Badsville welcomes you aboard. Includes tracks by Gary Link & the Rock-a-Fellas, Buddy Starr & the Starliners, The Saints, Jamie Coe, Bo Toliver & His Timers, Dossie Thunderbird Terry, The Vocaleers, Celestine, Young Jessie, Creel Sisters, The Phaetons, Burt Keyes with Teddy McRae & His Orchestra, The Downbeats, The Stereos, The Ramblers, The Storms, The Renegades, Nightmares (Jimmie Maddin Orchestra), Don Johnston, Jivin' Gene and the Jokers, Freddy Montell, Terry Corin and Her Boyfriends, and Mr. Undertaker.

KOLETZKI, OLIVER Schneeweiss IX CD
Over the years, Berlin has been cited as Oliver Koletzki's main point of reference and, more importantly, his endless source of inspiration. His albums Grossstadtmarchen (SVT 037CD, 2009) and Grossstadtmarchen 2, released in two parts (SVT 075LP/SVT 080LP, 2012), are whole-hearted tributes of the German capital, as its importance is continuously hinted and charted. Friedrichshain, one of Berlin's vibrant districts, has always held a special place in Oliver's heart. This is where he started out when he first moved to the city, and this is where he lives now. Kreuzberg's wall paintings adorn Stil Vor Talent's cover sleeves and host their headquarters. There are little to no corners in the city that haven't brought a spark of inspiration into the mix. The Schneeweiss compilation series, now at its eighth installment, is built as a form of tribute to all these particles, tied in together into a series of carefully curated tracks. Each compilation stands at the intersection of the musical and cultural surroundings most prominent of their respective times, acting both as a reminder as well as a timeless sound capsule for the years to come. Schneeweiss IX features: Monolink, Oliver Koletzki, Midas 104, Andhim, Högni, Eagles & Butterflies, Daniel Rateuke, Oliver Koletzki & Niko Schwind, Super Flu, Sam Shure, Giorgia Angiuli & Lake Avalon, Moonwalk, Martin Waslewski, and Stimming & Lambert.

VA Midnight In Tokyo Vol. 2 2LP
Double LP version. Midnight In Tokyo Vol. 2, the second installment to the compilation series that rounds up hidden gems by Japanese artists that's perfect for listening at night in Tokyo, is here. This time the collection brings together some tasty electric jazz fusion from the '80s, compiled by Dubby, the man behind the online record store Ondas. The compilation begins with "Hikobae", a dark and slow cosmic jazz by saxophonist Genji Sawai, followed by "Danza Lucumi", an odd Caribbean-style jam by Today's Latin Project, a band fronted by Tadaaki Misago of Tokyo Cuban Boys, with arrangements by Yasuaki Shimizu. "On The Coast" is a soulful and mellow vocal track arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto, from guitarist Shigeru Suzuki's album White Heat (1979), and fusion boogie cut "In The Hot City" is by Air Suspension Club Band, which was a one-off project by a mysterious artist. The melancholic soul jazz number "So Long America" is the title track from the album Yasunori Soryo, along with Jim Rocks, released in '82, following a stint in America with the band Brown Rice. "Twisty" is a tropical reggae tune from the album Samba Kathy, an underrated classic by Jugando which was released on Trash, a sublabel of one of Japan's finest jazz labels, Trio. "Samarkand" is an electric Latin jazz jam that sounds like something Miles Davis and Santana could have played on, performed by a Latin funk band from Fussa. "Imagery" is a primal African fusion track by Katsutoshi Morizono With Bird's Eye View, Morizono was a member of the prog rock band Yoninbayashi. "Windmill" is the most acoustic sounding tune on this compilation, a breezy Brazilian affair with a Hermeto Pascoal feel. "Mystery Of Asian Port" is by the band Parachute, which consisted of Japanese fusion giants like Akira Inoue, Tatsuo Hayashi, and Masaki Matsubara. The cosmic jazz record sounds like something Daniele Baldelli would play in his sets. "Bay Sky Provincetown 1977" is a classic Japanese fusion tune by guitarist Yuji Toriyama. The set also features the mellow but danceable "Heatwave" by keyboardist Keiichi Oku, featuring a female vocalist (which some have identified as Rie Ida), and last but not least, closing out the 13-track compilation is "Day Dream At The Bob's Beach", a wonderful urban fusion with a beautiful vibraphone melody, from the Japanese fusion classic album that was a one-off project by studio musicians, Safari. Also features Kingkong Paradise, Om, and Safari.

OISEAUX-TEMPETE Tarab CD
Tarab (in literary Arabic: euphoria, secular exaltation, ecstasy), Oiseaux-Tempête's sixth release on Sub Rosa, is the result of live recordings captured during the AL-'AN! (SR 440CD/LP, 2017) tour. In a handful of improvised albums circumnavigating the troubled waters of the contemporary Mediterranean -- Greece with the eponymous Oiseaux-Tempête (SR 381CD/LP, 2013), Turkey and Sicily for Ütopiya? (SR 396CD/LP, 2015), and Lebanon with AL-'AN! -- the collective Oiseaux-Tempête has stretched its electric arc over musical genres and borders, imposing itself in a river of tours and releases like a wild UFO within the hexagonal indie scene. It is little surprise that following the remix album -- Re-Works (SR 387LP, 2014) -- and collection of B sides -- Unworks & Rarities 2012-15 (SR 424CD/LP, 2016) -- Oiseaux-Tempête unveils, by way of a new opus, an album entirely recorded in concert. Tarab is the result of live recordings captured during the AL-'AN! tour which led the group, after a preliminary residency at l'Autre Canal in Nancy, to cross Europe and into Canada, performing at Le Guess Who? in Utrecht, opening for Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart in Montreal and Toronto, following Jerusalem In My Heart through France then from Brussels to Berlin, and closing at the Irtijal festival in Beirut. Tarab is a meeting of the Parisian founding members Frédéric D. Oberland and Stéphane Pigneul, electronic sound wizard Mondkopf, G.W.Sok (The Ex), Sylvain Joasson (Mendelson), videographers As Human Pattern, and the Lebanese musicians Charbel Haber, Abed Kobeissy, and Ali El Hout (Two Or The Dragon). The studio pieces are stretched, deconstructed, and rearranged here while new works from the road -- poems "Grasse Matinée" by Jacques Prévert and "Tuesday And The Weather Is Clear" by Mahmoud Darwish -- find unique musical settings. It is in symbiosis, in the fever and visceral experimentation, that the musicians seek rapture. Arranged in a semicircle, they invoke the elements and attempt the catharsis, inviting the spectator to spiral with them, entwined in the sonic explosions, finding beauty and peace in the spaces of improvisation and elaboration. Marrying free-rock, organic electronics, traditional instruments, and unbridled electricity, Tarab, far beyond the vibrant testimony, is a generous invitation to experience, to meditate, and to share. CD version comes in an eight-page digipack.

MUGWUMP Drape CD
Belgian DJ and producer Mugwump performs an about-face with a new sound and live show and unveils the first extract of his second album Drape. It's first extract, "No Trepidation", is a fast-paced postpunk/electronic hybrid and a punch in the face of conformity, formatting, and self-censorship. Borrowing his name from a character from William Burroughs's famed novel Naked Lunch (1959), Mugwump is an elusive presence, a reputation preceded by infamous DJ residencies at Belgian clubs and a long-standing recording relation with Cologne's Kompakt Records, ongoing DJ support from Andrew Weatherall, as well as a large catalog of electronic "disco-techno" records, released on leading labels R&S, Gigolo, Cocoon, Endless Flight, Eskimo, Permanent Vacation, or International Feel. Mugwump is also well-known for running the Leftorium club night in Brussels where like-minded DJ guests such as Ivan Smagghe, Andrew Weatherall, Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo, Optimo, Prins Thomas, Sascha Funke, Gerd Janson, Ata, or Roman Flügel share decks. Drape is the follow-up to 2015's debut studio album Unspell, which boasted many guest vocalists, garnered media plaudits across the board internationally, and was supported with live appearances at Benelux, French, UK, and Dutch festivals and venues. Taking it further and morphing into a full live band with new members, Mugwump released the Metempsycho EP in November 2016 on which Geoffroy made his singing debut. Drape is the result of nine months locked up with musicians Stephane Fedele (bass), Thomas Stadnicki (guitars), Lukas Melville (drums) and a series of live shows in Belgium. It fuses the electronic with an occasionally heavy-rock feel and outstanding lyrics, all topped off with a French-Belgian-tinged vocal and lyrical topicality. Music-wise it spans a breadth of influences from the Interzone between post-punk, indie pop, psych, and noise while Geoffroy Mugwump lays down conscious, parlando-style, lyrics over nine songs "soundtracking our torments in the age of laissez-faire and aestheticisation".

RATLIFF AND BLACK MAGIC, K.S. Fear of the Night LP
Subliminal Sounds present a first time reissue of K.S. Ratliff And Black Magic's Fear Of The Night, originally released in 1982. A rare and unique teenage psych garage private press album. Here's the inside word from the pioneering record collector and front man of New York's Endless Boogie, Paul Major: "The first time I heard this record I had to vigorously punch myself in the face to make sure I wasn't dreaming it up. It's real. K.S. Ratliff comes on like a blast from a lost world, a maverick small town flash from high school kids in some alternate Kentucky utterly isolated from any scene and untainted by even the slightest stink of music biz disease. Real people. This music has the direct and real emotional honesty of Kenneth Higney crossed with the ominous sci-fi atmosphere of Marcus, boiled down to the essentials, merging a psyched-up garage sense of teen discovery with music so uncontrived it naturally delivers hook after hook. Brilliant songs like 'Brainstorms', 'Fear Of The Night', and 'Invasion' are right to the point. No pretense or distance seems to exist between the singer's mind and what is crashing into your ears. The vocals redefine the concept of talent and the no frills fuzz guitar/organ action has an uncanny mysterious quality like something hiding in plain sight. You can dig it straight up but if you turn your mind a little to the left or right you can climb right into another dimension. It's like your seemingly ordinary next door neighbor has been hiding a flying saucer in his basement and you just found out about it. Real people private pressing records come in many flavors but the best ones have some unifying elements. They sound like nothing else even if some of the moves they make convey a bent sense of the familiar. They emerged from a nurturing isolation and remained unknown until the right ears stumbled across a copy. The person and the music are inseparable, fortifying each other into a zone where ordinary musical standards become irrelevant as an indicator of quality. In 2018 the once constant flow of unique and important vintage discoveries has slowed to a trickle. K.S. Ratliff and Black Magic is an extra tasty killer that I file in the 'I can't believe a record like this actually exists' section." Edition of 500.

KANO Runes LP
Subliminal Sounds present the first ever vinyl release Kano's Runes, originally released in 1986. A unique, dark and sparse, tribal, minimal synth, drone, trance, new age recording from the mysterious Kano. Previously only issued as an obscure cassette back in 1986 which is now much sought after. Runes is much darker and brooding compared to its new age peers of the era. Drums, metallophone, synths, and more leads you on a deep inwards trip via damp, cold and foggy caves to the ancients. Runes are reminders of our ancient future. They reveal messages of wisdom that are held deep within our hearts and consciousness. Runes remind you of the forgotten past, opening your minds into the Universal Mind. Archetypal runic symbols appear throughout the earth as relics of many ancient cultures including Hindu and Native American, but their primary origin as tools of divination is most often given as Nordic and Germanic. Their true source is perhaps, too ancient and arcane to ever know with historical certainty. The music of Runes is of such power and beauty, that it can be effective for inducing states of consciousness that allow deep meditation, channeling and trance. Runes is an extraordinary musical experience. Kano, who described it as "a trance musician from Colorado" on the original release, was Don Campbell in real life and the Runes cassette was eventually issued under his name too. Born in 1946 in San Antonio, Texas, Don Campbell spent his high school years in Europe, studying classical music with the legendary Nadia Boulanger and Jean Casadesus at the Fountainebleu Conservatory in France. A graduate of the University of North Texas, he began his professional career as a music critic and teacher for seven years at St. Mary's International School in Tokyo. Campbell's interest in sound, healing and education have taken him to over forty countries through the years. He has researched and documented the role and uses of music in therapeutic settings, psychology, and imagery applications, educational programs and the contemporary and indigenous spiritual traditions. In 1988, Campbell founded the Institute of Music, Health and Education, serving as its director until 1995. He is also the author of 23 books, some of which have been translated in to 24 languages. Additionally, he served as Acoustic and Musical Director of Aesthetics Audio Systems, an innovative company that provides quality music to healthcare facilities, until his passing. Edition of 1000.

LOVE, SIMON Sincerely, S. Love x CD
If you're thinking of buying just one magnificent pop disc in 2018, you need look no further: Tapete present Simon Love's Sincerely, S. Love x. Sincerely, S. Love x (the kiss is meant to be pronounced) is Simon's sophomore solo album (his 2015 debut It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time was released on the brilliant, now sadly defunct Fortuna Pop label) and it features at least ten hits. Proper pop hits, with ELO harmonies, Spectoresque production, strings, and trumpets, the whole shebang. All recorded over the last two years in London, England. Big city pop! Listening to Sincerely, S. Love x conjures up images of the Run DMC/Aerosmith video for "Walk This Way", except in Love's case, the 1910 Fruitgum Company would be rehearsing on one side of the wall and The Left Banke on the other. When the wall between the two bands comes tumbling down, Elton John might pop in to see what all the fuss is about. He happens to see a white grand piano standing there and joins in the fun. Then they crack open a few bottles of Cola and listen to The Rutles or Stiff Records 7"s. And seeing as they are all there in the same place, they record a few songs together. The result: the album you now see before you. More or less. "Maybe it sounds rather corny, but love really is a big part of this album," Simon Love admits. "'God Bless The Dick Who Let You Go' was a wedding gift for my wife, for instance ... I'm such a cheapskate!" Homemade presents are the loveliest presents of all. And to be fair, with a name like Love, why shouldn't the most delectable of feelings take center stage? Love is in abundance on Simon's new album: two tunes for his beloved ("God Bless The Dick Who Let You Go", "I Fucking Love You"), one for himself ("The Ballad Of Simon Love") and one for Joey Ramone ("Joey Ramone"). A song about the Beach Boys villain who shares his last name would not be out of place either. One for the next album perhaps. Other topics covered on this set: an unsightly tattoo ("Why´d You Get That Tattoo Girl?"), tennis ("Tennis Fan"), and a letter written by the five-year-old Stephen Timothy West to Blue Peter presenter John Noakes ("Stephen Timothy West"). The album is also characterized by a liberal dose of swearwords: Fuck, fucking, dick, dicking (and there's a shit in there too). This should, if nothing else, finally lend an air of street credibility to Tapete Records.

MAESTRO Monkey Business CD
It's been 30 minutes now or so that the Franco-Scottish trio Maestro have been on stage depicting all the shades of mourning times, waves of reconciliation, reassurance, and anger. Their second album, Monkey Business, is an attempt to understand why these things happen over and over. Why can love be so cold-hearted and why does the harmony between two people run dry? An ever-recurring question, when and why do these cracks happen? When do two humans become strangers all of a sudden? Since no one has found an answer yet, do we have to scream and create music and words? No, well, not everyone should. But there's no doubt this band can and wants to. So you are here staring at Maestro and by the end of the show there's a dance that seems to have been present from the beginning. Still following? Suddenly all the rage makes sense because good old England has invented an angry idea that is called pop. Maestro navigate through the oddest extremes of pop with a punk deviance. From off-kilter Arabic synth riffs ("Should I"), to an unexpected perverted quirky trap ("Dirty Bitch"). It's not surprising the Scottish man is in charge of the words and singing -- even if Scotland was about to leave this old England... They are cooking a similar soup, but this is not the same old cup of tea folks... Maestro are sucking the blood of a vivid European vein, shamelessly classical but at the same time redefining conventional structures (like on the baroque song "Skyman" and its detached whisperings, "...shit happens...") Within the experimental sophisticated arrangements lie some of the sweetest melodies ("Sweet Talk", "K.I.M"), and a lonesome spine-tickling moment thanks to the climatic waltz "Yes Today". Maestro are direct, sharp, and acidic, barbaric and virtuoso, their music is ultimately enlightened by a magical combination of electronic textures present within their driven, pure, and provocative music. But their deconstructed sound never loses its harmonic motive. Here and there broken hymns appear and peel themselves out of 30 years of club history. It feels like there is a certain necessity for mass hysteria in this music.

OZMOTIC Elusive Balance CD
Ozmotic is a multidisciplinary artistic project, deeply fascinated by the dynamics of contemporary society, by architecture, cities, and vast uncontaminated spaces. Ozmotic creates world sounds characterized by an intense tonal variety and a refined rhythmic research. The interaction between electronic music and digital visual art in real time is an essential trait of Ozmotic's aesthetic. Having previously collaborated with Fennesz, Murcof, Bretschnider, and Senking, Elusive Balance is their third album, following AirEffect in 2015, and Liquid Times in 2016 (both for FolkWisdom). Ozmotic now release their debut album for Touch, Elusive Balance. Elusive Balance explores the relationship between humans and nature, as well as the search for balance between these two great entities. The theme of equilibrium and its precariousness, and its natural tendency to achieve relative stability connects all living things. Equilibrium is also a junction point and evolutionary engine -- unstable and elusive, ready to deteriorate and to start a new reaction mechanism bringing organisms to a new harmony. "Beauty is a rare and fleeting thing; it often corresponds to those phases where we can grasp that unstable equilibrium which exists between us and the world at large." Musically the album seeks resolution of sound contrasts, in a continuous search for an emotional component that gives simultaneously a feeling of tension and stillness. There is a duality between the "organic" components (represented by soprano sax and percussion) and their interaction with machines and computers. In Elusive Balance, Ozmotic investigate the essence of their sound to expand its emotional and compositional potential. Each track contains a search for a synthesis between sound elements apparently distant from each other, but in reality, they create a new balance -- as poetic as it is musical. The album's seven tracks draw a sonic flow in which the melodic aspects are countered by glitches and angular sounds, and the ambient passages are subjected to heavy rains of rhythm, leaving space for dreamlike moments.

VITAL IDLES Left Hand CD
Playing their first shows in Glasgow in 2015 during a summer that never threatened to show up, Vital Idles' origins are closely tied with a tireless underground culture, a culture that informs the band's refusal to take it easy. Matthew Walkerdine, Nick Lynch, and Andy Monaghan are responsible for Glasgow DIY publishing institution Good Press while guitarist Ruari MacLeann's pedigree stretches back to breakneck-indie-pop group Golden Grrrls and the Rose McDowall band. Following two self-released demos (2015) and a sold-out debut 7" (2016), Vital Idles arrive on Upset The Rhythm with Left Hand, a bare manifesto layered with meaning and non-meaning. With their debut album Vital Idles have stripped away all extraneous ornamentation to sculpt an incredibly life-like, vibrant pop music completely détourned and re-thought. For a conglomerate of art outsiders and aesthetes, Vital Idles are primitive, whimsically brutal. Sculpting a skeleton from a body already lean, there's a thrilling minimalism that runs through every beat and strum, a sparseness that feeds Jessica Higgins's surreal, oblique vocal delivery all the nourishment it needs. Following practice room and bigger-budget recordings with Glasgow engineer Monaghan, Vital Idles took complete control of their debut album, with Edwin Stevens (aka, Irma Vep) providing an outside perspective on the hermetically sealed group's music. Engineered by Stevens and MacLean, Left Hand crackles with a raw, punk approach to writing warped pop songs that don't just talk of disorder but often actively demonstrate it. Higgins manages to create dialogues that she narrates both parts of, dada-ist songs that seem obfuscated by layers of meaning that, when taken on their own terms as evocative mini-worlds, reveal themselves to be pieces that have an internal melancholy and logic. Like Gertrude Stein growing up on Dunedin pop groups, peel away the deliberate awkwardness and Left Hand reveals itself to be a book of complex, literary short stories at pleasing odds with the wired, no-frills melodic thud MacLean, Lynch, and Walkerdine serve. At times a perilous journey into the unknown and at others an immensely enjoyable foray into form deconstruction, lyricist Higgins repeatedly builds narratives out of mis-hearings, peons to doing things wrong, sideways-glances at conventional narrative. The delivery tightrope-walks between deadpan epithets and a Smiths-ian pop singing which gives many of the lyrics bite, pathos, and a surprising amount of surrealistic positivity.

CHERRY, DON Home Boy, Sister Out CD
Don Cherry's downtown Paris funk masterwork Home Boy, Sister Out, produced in 1985 by Ramuntcho Matta and originally released by Barclay in France only, finally gets a worldwide release on Wewantsounds. Featuring French post-punk muse Elli Medeiros, avant-garde poet Brion Gysin, and cult Senegalese drummer Abdoulaye Prosper Niang (Xalam), this is a unique soundbite of Paris in the early '80s at its coolest when funk, jazz, and new wave were mingling with sounds from Africa, Jamaica, and Latin America. Recorded at the legendary Studio Caroline in Paris, a hotbed for the African diaspora in Paris the '80s, and produced by cult French-Chilean musician and producer Ramuntcho Matta (his father is painter Roberto Matta and half-brother is cult New York artist Gordon Matta-Clark), Home Boy, Sister Out is one of Don Cherry's funkiest albums. Coming back from New York where Matta had immersed himself in the downtown scene working with the likes of Peter Gordon, Arto Lindsay, The Talking Heads, Meredith Monk, and Laurie Anderson, he crossed path with the American trumpet player in Paris by chance. It was love at first sight and together they had the idea of an album where Cherry would not only play but also sing. Accompanied by a first class cast of musicians from the Paris scene, they recorded Home Boy, Sister Out in Spring 1985. Very little known outside of France, where it has achieved cult status in some circles, the album embodies the spirit of the "Sono Mondiale", the multi-ethnic sound of '80s Paris, pioneered by Radio Nova and Celluloid Records. Featuring legendary Senegalese drummer, Abdoulaye Prosper Niang (Xalam), Negrito Trasante, Elli Medeiros, Jannick Top, and Don Cherry on various instruments plus vocals, the album is a fascinating mix of Downtown New York funk, jazz, new wave, reggae, and African music. The release also includes a handful of bonus tracks taken from Ramuntcho Matta's vaults including the cult 1983 single "Kick" featuring legendary multi-artist Brion Gysin who's influenced such artists as David Bowie, Keith Haring, John Zorn, Brian Jones, Genesis P-Orridge, among others. A fascinating album. Newly remastered. Includes five bonus tracks. Double LP version comes in a gatefold sleeve and features a new essay by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation).

2018 repress; 1998 release. Voted one of 1998's top 15 Records of the Year in Modern Composition by the writers and critics of The Wire, Trilogie de la Mort is a work in three parts for anolog Arp synthesizer. The first third of the work, Kyema, is inspired by The Tibetan Book of the Dead and invokes the six intermediate states that constitute the existential continuity of the being. Kailasha, the second chapter, is structured on an imaginary pilgrimage around Mt. Kailash, one of the most sacred mountains in the Himalayas. Koumé makes up the last part of the trilogy and emphasizes the transcendence of death.
