NOTWIST, THE The Messier Objects 2LP
2018 repress. When The Notwist returned with their acclaimed seventh studio album Close to the Glass in early 2014, many were enchanted by the epic instrumental track "Lineri." It was the only instrumental track featured on that album, but according to Markus Acher, the band's vocalist, instrumental works had an important role in the album. Indeed, while the band's members pursued solo projects between 2008's The Devil, You + Me and 2014's Close to the Glass, The Notwist also composed instrumental works for several theater productions and radio plays, some of which are compiled here as The Messier Objects. The collection obviously brings to mind the ghosts of library music and '70s soundtracks, but can also be heard as a summary of the band's ever-evolving musical cosmos. The 17 featured pieces range from sample-based electronic collages to the buoyant post-rock of "Das Spiel ist aus." Whether the band is experimenting with modular synthesizers, analog percussion, or even horn sections ("Object 11"), there remains a constant flow of gentle grooves that makes this open-minded collection more than just a companion piece to Close to the Glass. The double LP edition is presented in a screen-printed cover, features an etching on side D, includes a download code.

HEMKA Familiar 12"
After her well received 707 Collision EP on Balans Records earlier in 2018 (BALANS 023EP), the Parisian DJ and producer Hemka returns on the Dutch imprint with Familiar, presenting four stomping, big-room techno cuts. "Familiar #1" sets the tone of the EP with its fast-paced twisted rhythms, followed by yet another fierce track perfectly suited for dark warehouse raves. On the B-side "Familiar #3" rolls forward and things get trippier while its steady cycling groove remains warm and soulful. "Familiar #4" shuts things down in a more seductive, playful mood adding a little Detroit hypnotism into the mix.

MAROON TOWN Freedom Call CD
Ten brand new tracks from the Brixton-London band Maroon Town, including a collaboration with Basque singer Fermin Muguruza in the track "Hope". Ten razor sharp examples of the band's classic sound: smoking hot trad ska workouts collide with Latin, rap, and soulful reggae influences to fine effect throughout its duration. Maroon Town's music, although categorized sometimes as reggae, is really an innovative blend of get-up-on-your-feet-and-dance music with noticeable elements of ska, rap, jazz, soul, and funk. As it is well known, Maroon Town fuses the spirituality, and cinematic sound of classic ska with contemporary street rap, and a cheeky slice of Latin funk. The eight-piece explosion of ska, rap, and brassy dub has been tearing up audiences around the world for thirty years with number one tracks and extensive radio play around the globe include songs like "Fire", "Pound To The Dollar", "Cumbia Infernal", "Ya Ya Lemme Tell Dem"... Fresh out of college in 1987, emerged the idea between Deuan German and Rajan Datar of forming a band whilst spending a few months in the small village of Walderston high up in the hills of Jamaica. Back in London they managed to get a sound approximating that of ska and managed to get musical master tips from Prince Buster who they met and London legend Gaz Mayall (The Trojans). The name, Maroon Town, defines perfectly the spirit of the band, freedom, and self-reliance. The Maroons were the runaway slave rebels who escaped from the plantations and formed free autonomous communities. The first lineup of the band (1990) featured three men and four women and there was creative magic between them. One day, Rajan in some reception area in a North London building bumps into John Bradbury, the drummer of The Specials (his teenage heroes) and they bonded and Brad went on to produce the band's first single "City Riot" which was a version of Cannonball Adderley's "Jive Samba" which had also been covered by Prince Buster. They pressed up their own 7"s and almost immediately, John Peel was playing it regularly. In a very short space of time Maroon Town started to get a lot of recognition. The inspiring live act has been performing at prestigious venues and festivals all over the continent. They also made history when they were sponsored to the tune of £100,000 by Dr. Martens.

CLUSTER Konzerte 1972/1977 LP+CD
2018 repress; LP version with CD. The two authorized recordings presented on Konzerte 1972/1977 vividly conjure up the atmosphere, perhaps even the magic, of a Cluster performance back in the day. One took place in 1977 during a science fiction festival in Metz (France). The other dates back to an earlier show in Hamburg's Fabrik venue. Cluster played three gigs in the city in 1971/1972, including the one partially included on 1972's Cluster II (LR 335LP). Cluster shows routinely lasted six hours or more, luring both the band and the audience into a state of intoxication, no doubt acutely enhanced by the intake of certain substances. The buzzwords of the moment were: psychedelic, magical, ritualistic, corresponding more or less to the Dionysian hedonism which pervades certain styles of contemporary music culture today. It is worth noting this context as useful background when listening to the live recordings presented here. In the beginning, Cluster's music was rough, brutal, and spontaneous, created with the most rudimentary tools. Unlike many of their colleagues in this pioneering age, Cluster did not use any synthesizers, sequencers, or high-end amps. But this proved to be their strength, rather than a disadvantage. Roedelius and Moebius played in the truest sense of the word, untroubled by mechanical processes. They used their machines but were not dependent on them. Intuition was the dominant force, the risk of potential failure was readily understood to be as much a part of their vibrant art as success. Perfection had become a concept associated with convention. Indeed, anyone who was lucky enough to witness Cluster play in the 1970s will testify that things sometimes went badly wrong. But mostly they did not, and then the real magic was tangible. A utopian, previously undiscovered world of sound was created in the presence of the beholder. The sound quality of these two documents is average. A successful performance was considered more important than a perfect recording thereof. As listeners, this should be accepted today. Konzerte 1972/1977 provides a short journey into the nascent heart of Cluster's creative universe, just after the big bang.

FALL, THE Levitate (Expanded Edition) 3LP
Triple LP version. Limited Edition. "Levitate is the Fall's 19th album originally released in 1997 on Artful Records. It has been out of print for a number of years now and is much sought after by fans. It's the last album to feature two long-time Fall members, drummer Karl Burns and bass player Steve Hanley (whose playing was once described by Smith as the defining element of the group's music). The album was initially going to be produced by Keir Stewart and Simon Spencer (who previously collaborated with Smith under the moniker D.O.S.E. on the 1995 single 'Plug Myself In'). Most of the recordings took place at Edwyn Collins' studio in West Hampstead. However, Stewart and Spencer soon fell out with Smith over payments and left after a week, taking most of the tapes with them. The only tracks from these sessions to make the album were '4½ Inch' (allegedly edited out of samples of a rehearsal recording), 'Spencer', later re-dubbed by Smith as 'Spencer Must Die', and 'The Quartet of Doc Shanley'. This re-issue has been re-mastered by long term Fall engineer Andy Pearce and features new sleeve notes by Daryl Easlea."

SPARE SNARE Sounds LP
Spare Snare, from Dundee, Scotland, celebrated 25 years of releasing records by asking Steve Albini if he would be up for co-hosting a Scottish Engineers' Workshop with the band, and recording Spare Snare for the rest of that week. A resounding "YES" was returned and funding was secured from Creative Scotland to host the workshop and record the album. The band chose to record ten classic Snare tracks from the catalog that have evolved with playing live, or tracks that would suit Albini's sound. These Albini recordings have become one of the highlights for the band, sitting nicely next to their four John Peel sessions. Mastered and cut with the word "audiophile" in mind: Recorded on two-inch tape, and mixed on to half-inch tape by Albini, the album was then mastered and cut by mastering legend Pete Norman. Pressed at Optimal in Germany. Brown reverse card sleeve; Includes one color print. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

KING TUBBY Dub From The Roots LP
2018 repress. "There are very few individuals who command the respect of dub aficionados greater than 'The Dubmaster' himself, King Tubby. On Tubby's venerable 1974 release Dub from the Roots, he introduces us to the 'Shalom Dub', a method of mixing flying cymbals with horns in what he describes as 'going in and out in a dub way'. Borrowing from the forty fives of Johnny Clarke, Jackie Edwards, Cornell Campbell, John Holt, and Horace Andy, King Tubby takes the listener on a journey through a vast array of different emotions, rhythms and soundscapes. One of the standout cuts, 'Iyahta' explores Tubby's use of deep electric basslines to evoke a melodic calmness in the listener, while 'Mine Field' and 'Hijack the Barber' bring you back with the cavernous echoes of stabbing guitars, horns, and cymbals. Though previously released by different labels on a variety of dusty pressings and formats, Clocktower's reissue of Dub From The Roots is the definitive edition of this 'Dubmaster' classic, featuring audio mastered from the original analog tapes."

VA Cocoon Compilation R CD
Cocoon presents R! Few other DJs embody the ability to "think outside the box" like Frankfurt's honorary citizen and Cocoon head Sven Väth, whether he's dropping Sade's version of "Why Can't We Live Together" to close out the night or ushering in Monday morning with The Bangles' "Just Another Manic Monday". Of course Sven and Cocoon are also synonymous with techno, nevertheless, it's worth looking back over the last few years of Cocoon's output to realize strict style guidelines and exaggerated pigeonholing no longer apply. It's especially true for the compilation series, which having now reached the letter R, impressively shows the arc the Frankfurt label's output continues to span. From soft and melodic with a lot of depth to highly functional and extremely crisp -- there's a creative range on offer that very few labels can boast. Sven Väth: "I listen to and play everything that I like and that touches me. I always pack a genre-spanning record bag, I'm particularly interested in those special tracks." The current compilation, R, not only continues this idea, it is a prime example of the label's philosophy. The illustrious circle of artists on the latest compilation is peppered with such prominent names as Isoleé, Lusine, Pig&Dan, Inigo Kennedy, Ambivalent & Alden Tyrell, ROD, and Mano Le Tough. Label representative and Frankfurt original Ingo Boss is once again on board and with contributions from International Anything, John Heckle, Cristi Cons, and Eduardo De La Calle, promising new faces from further afield are also represented. Of course, all this doesn't say much about the actual content, but that's exactly what it's about. Known vs. unknown, origins, discography etc., it's not important on this collection. Cocoon delivers what the label stands for and what it does best: promoting new artists, bringing celebrity names on board and above all, not building any musical walls either on or off the dancefloor. With releases like this, it's clear to us that the journey is ongoing and the wheel will continue to spin.

CORRUPTED Felicific Algorithim LP
Repressed! Corrupted is a mysterious Japanese doom metal band, formed in 1994. Immensely down-tuned guitar and crushingly slow bass are shrouded under deep layers of feedback. They are rightly hailed as one of the heaviest and darkest doom metal bands of all time. This record isn't your standard doom fare. The title-less tracks are to be played at either standard vinyl speed. Therefore, and at the band's request, no samples or download code. PICCIONI, PIERO Le Streghe CD
Digitmovies present Piero Piccioni's complete original soundtrack in mono and in full stereo for the episodes "La Strega Bruciata Viva" ("The Witch Scorched Alive") by Luchino Visconti and "Una Sera Come Le Altre" ("A Night Like Any Other") by Vittorio De Sica for the 1967 movie Le Streghe (aka The Witches) produced by Dino de Laurentiis. The film, which was released on February 22, 1967, is divided into five episodes starring the fascinating Diva Silvana Mangano. The Mauro Bolognini and Franco Rossi episodes have virtually no music -- except very brief fragments of atonal strings (possibly library music) in the Rossi episode and just a reprise of the "main theme" written by Piero Piccioni for the Visconti episode at the end of the Bolognini episode. This CD focuses only on the music of Piero Piccioni for this film. The tapes were kept in the private archives of Piccioni and they have been found with the big help of Jason Piccioni, the son of the composer. Two ¼ reel tapes, one in stereo and one in mono, which have been preserved until today in very good conditions. For "The Witch Scorched Alive" Piero Piccioni wrote a refined dancefloor theme, a shake for piano, organ, drums, guitars and brass, which we might call "The Witches Shake", reprised with different instrumentations and which is the background dance of Gloria in the hotel lounge room. This dancefloor music is alternated with a romantic, rarefied, and haunting love theme that, without doubt, is one of the most beautiful love themes of the whole career of Piero Piccioni: a jazzy, slow, suspended, almost sacred theme for harp, vibraphone, guitar, celesta, flute, and bass. The score was brilliantly conducted by Bruno Nicolai and Piero Piccioni himself. Please note also that in this soundtrack and almost in all his soundtracks, Piccioni performs solo piano and organ. CD version includes two bonus tracks, for historical and artistic purposes: the very rare mono version of the shake theme as featured in the opening titles -- with some sound effect found in the mono master tape of the final film music/effects mix -- and a long stereo suite re-recorded by Piccioni.

ANDY AND MARCIA GRIFFITHS, BOB Young Gifted and Black / Pied Piper CD
"Prior to uniting on disc towards the close of the sixties, Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths had enjoyed successful solo careers in their native Jamaica, both having previously scored significant hits for Studio One Records. Soon after joining Harry Johnson's stable of artists, the duo made the British pop charts with a joyous reggae version of Nina Simone's 'To Be Young, Gifted And Black', which peaked at number five in the spring of 1970. The following summer, the pair returned to the UK Pop charts when their self-produced version of the Crispian St. Peters' pop hit, 'Pied Piper' made it to number 11, but by the mid-1970s both singers had returned to their successful solo careers, with Marcia also becoming a third of Bob Marley's all-female backing band, the I-Threes. This long overdue set comprises the popular duo's two Trojan albums from the early 1970s, including the two best-selling title tracks plus a host of superior early reggae sides, including the rare Jamaican mix of 'Young Gifted & Black'."

I think it's because they're such good foils for one another; whatever brought them together brought together talents that are exceptional contrasts and complements -- in background, style, and in emotion. AYLER TRIO, ALBERT Spiritual Unity CD
2018 repress; expanded reissue. Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people's eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February '64, in New York, but this was the first album on which neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP's first jazz recording. Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler's sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody. Meanwhile, under and around the leader's unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments. This 50th Anniversary Expanded Edition includes as a bonus the track briefly substituted for "Spirits" on an early vinyl edition. It is the same tune known as "Vibrations" on the album of that title on Arista/Freedom (aka Ghosts when issued on Debut) and as "[tune Q]2" on the Revenant box set Holy Ghost. This is the first time both "Spirits" and "Vibrations" have been on an ESP edition of Spiritual Unity.

LAVELLE & REGGIE SYLVESTER, MATT Retrograde CD
Matt Lavelle (trumpet, flugelhorn, alto clarinet) and Reggie Sylvester (drums), New York avant-jazz veterans and longtime cohorts in the Bern Nix Quartet, perform in duo here on Retrograde, their debut on ESP-Disk'. Visiting destinations overlooked on John Coltrane's tour of the solar system, they craft their own space suite of earthier delights. This album was recorded live at Andrea Wolper's WhyNot Experiment? series. Matt and Reggie played two sets; the second set, with Bern Nix in the audience, is what you hear on this album, which is dedicated to the late Mr. Nix. This is the sixth album as a leader from Matt Lavelle (b. 1970), and his first on ESP-Disk'. He has studied with Ornette Coleman and swing-era veteran Hildred Humphries, has worked with William Parker, Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, Jemeel Moondoc, Mat Maneri, Matana Roberts, Rashid Bakr, and folk/improv ensemble Stars Like Fleas. He collaborated with ESP fave Giuseppi Logan on the latter's 2010 comeback and worked extensively with Sabir Mateen. Currently, Lavelle leads a variety of groups, most notably The 12 Houses, an all-star avant big band. Drummer Reggie Sylvester (b. 1957) was a member of the early Black Rock Coalition of the mid-1980s and played with the BRC Orchestra and its instrumental offshoot Trio From Beyond, he opened for Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Ginger Baker's Middle Passage Band (album produced by Bill Laswell) (2016), and Raging Slab at Wetlands. In 1995, he recorded with experimental guitarist/vibist/bassist Paul Steven Ray, producing a three-song EP produced by John Snyder. In 2001, Sylvester joined metal/hard rock trio Rock Diesel, which recorded the independent CD Feedback. In April 2012, he became a member of the Bern Nix Quartet, playing all their shows until Nix's death in 2017 and on their 2013 album Negative Capability. Sylvester currently co-leads avant-pop/folk group the Human Hearts Trio with Lindsey Wilson and bassist Michael Trotman, a band that sometimes includes Daniel Carter. Sylvester was commissioned by Patricia Nicholson Parker to compose and perform I Know Your Face with Wilson, Carter, Nix, and bassist Francois Grillot at the Arts for Art festival Justice Is Compassion. Sylvester has also performed with Charles Gayle, Jemeel Moondoc, James Brandon Lewis, Ava Mendoza, J.D. Parran, Ann Waldman, and Charles Waters. James McLean, original sound man at the Knitting Factory, recorded and carefully engineered a full sound as good as that of a studio album.

METABOLISMUS/MONO PAUSE Don't Low Up To The Amped Buenaes LP
"Split LP by a couple of bands who have more tricks up their collective sleeves than most outfits you could name. Metabolismus are a musical collective from near Stuttgart Germany, who have been actively corrupting the minds of everyone around them since the 1980s. The number of players on any given session, as well as the style of music that will be generated, is almost infinitely mutable. About all you can count on is that it will be intriguingly fried. Mono Pause began as a duo in River Falls, Wisconsin in the early '90s, before relocating to the Bay Area. They also create ethnic forgeries under the name Neung Phak, but that's of no matter here. Like their German brethren, Mono Pause has no fixed line-up or output style. Their records are generally fluxed as hell, and we're all the better for it. Not sure exactly how this split LP came into being, but when we heard such a thing existed we agreed to release it faster than your mom will drop a red-hot potato. Typically, the record sounded nothing like what we expected. Which is the best kind of surprise. Metabolismus's side begins with deeply freaked, rotating guitar figures that connect it historically to the German progressive sub-underground. From there it skates off into Neue Deutsche Welle turf, eventually loafing around with people-on-the-street-who-talk-with-balloons, and go all over the park in search of snacks. By the time they start doing a flipped-out Gainsbourg/Bardot-style cover of 'I Know You Rider' you'll be talking with balloons as well. Mono Pause's side ranges from German-tongued Egypto-spaghetti-pop readymades to subterranean secret agent theme songs played on mock-Theremin to blips of pure Residential form-hunch and beyond. The width of their skitterage is surpassed only by its elegant weirdness. Parts make me recall a never-released Der Plan record I once heard in a dream. Hooray!" --Byron Coley, 2018 RTI Vinyl; Edition of 500.

EMPOOL DOES Do Did Done LP
"Finally, what the world has been eagerly anticipating for the last four decades -- an LP by EMPOOL! Empool was a whacked-out, Detroit-based prog-noise combo (usually a trio or quartet), that would eventually merge into the rock-band-era Destroy All Monsters. Guitarist Laurence Miller was a constant throughout. Organist Andre Cynkin was generally on hand as well. Laurence's brothers, Ben and Roger, showed up now and then, as did pianist Rick Scott. Empool only played three live shows, but they recorded everything, and their use of pre-recorded tapes as a live sound source may have informed Roger's decision to do the same when he formed Mission of Burma. The tracks on this album were recorded between December 1976 and September 1977, and they're pretty amazing. Structurally, the stuff is far away from No Wave, but it has a lot of the same rough structural textures and jumbled sonics, although there's also crazy tape noise (some of it resembling gushing synth sequencing) and stun guitar stirred into the mix. The fact that it's mostly instrumental gives things a certain prog/experimental thrust that feels a bit parallel to the bands on the Random Radar label, but it runs wildly against the grain of anything else you'd hear in that era. With an insert containing Laurence's memories of the project, and album art guaranteed to lull prog heads into submission, Empool's DOES do did done is a magnificent head scratcher. Can be filed neatly between Sproton Layer and Destroy All Monsters." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300.

ARN & MARGARET UNKNOWN, ERIC Paranza Corta LP
"For his second Feeding Tube LP, following the superb solo outing Orphic Resonance (FTR 281LP, 2017), Eric Arn has chosen to team up with the Austrian shapeshifter Margaret Unknown (aka Max Bogner), for a set of acoustic guitar duets. Eric's history is well known via solo work, duets with Tom Carter, and hard psych playing from his pre-Vienna days with both Primordial Undermind and Crystalized Movements. We knew Margaret mostly for his work with (In) The Abyssity of the Grounds, who backed Linda Sharrock on her massive Gods 3LP set (which should be a fixture in every home). Recorded live at the mo.ë space in Vienna, Paranza Corta (Italian for a Sicilian style knife fight) is far less of a combat situation than a deeply explored intersection of stringed logic. Without being able to tell who plays what (and although the tracks are named after various bladed weapons), the music here is a fight, in the sense that the opening scene of West Side Story is a fight. While choreographed only on a subliminal level, these two guys allow each other a lot of space to change directions, and almost seem to be working in tandem, so immediate are their reflexive actions. The heft of the interplay here recalls some of the nylon string collaborations Eugene Chadbourne did back in the Parachute days, although he wasn't big on guitar duets (at least on record). The playing here offers the same brilliant mix of organically achieved weirdness that can begin as a gentle outside motion, and then grow to devilish proportions without ever going too far. If there even is such a thing. If there is (and I acknowledge the possibility), the music on Paranza Corta does not go there. It's a brilliant tapestry of gesture, reaction and recontextualization. Of course, as I write those words, I begin to realize that maybe it is more like a knife fight than I'd thought. We should really ask Russ Tamblyn what he thinks." --Byron Coley, 2018

JONES (MATT JONES), MB MB Jones by MB Jones LP
"Matt 'MB' Jones has long been kicking back and forth between the Valley and Asia. His recordings with Jee Jee Band have reflected this duality. And this new 'solo' album, recorded mostly in his original backyard with a cast of local hottentots (Conrad Capistran, Tim Sheldon, John Moloney, etc.) continues this vibe, while changing it in many subtle ways. The K-Pop readymades of the Jee Jee Band's Glass Fish LP (EM 1138CD/LP) have continued to drift out of Matt's repertoire. This remodeling began on Jee Jee's Holy Yolk LP (FTR 304, 2017), and by this point the hints are still there if you know where to look for them, but they no longer jump out at you. Matt's basic constructions are still often electronic pop at their base, but the details that get piled on top of that now require a wide closet of costumery. From the multi-tracked vocal glistens of '$200,000 Ticket to Space' (with neo-gamelanic tone highlighting) through to the jaw-harp-riven dolor of 'Going Swimming in the Morning,' the only real common thread the mood of dislocation Jones bakes into many of his lyrics. It's never easy keeping one foot in reality (so-called) while extending your other foot into the vacuum of space, but it's forward trajectory Matt seems to have managed. Perhaps this is why he and Mike Watt have struck up a friendship (the two recently cut a lathe 7"). Just as Watt attempts to codify his personal history, while the statis of the world constantly slides past him on his endless tours, Jones seems bent on writing twin histories of his peregrinations -- one with each hand, while everything spins around his head. It's an epic quest. And one to which you should pay sweet attention." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 250.

ABER, SHLOMI Whistler 12"
Shlomi Aber continues to explore different avenues of his multi-faceted sound with Whistler. Setting the pace is driving opening track "Whistler", the producer showcasing his ability to craft something big but undoubtedly refined. He then lets old school drums cruise along gentle sways of washed-out ambience. Back with more techno on the B side, this time in true Figure-style: lean, sharp, and utterly effective "Penetrate The System" leaves its mark and comes complete with an extended, separate intro. Staying atmospheric to the end, Aber chooses to step out in half-time, taking cues from dubstep.

JFK Weapon Design LP
The very latest from Ramleh's Anthony Di Franco, whose long-running solo JFK project has been dedicated to the kind of concrete-mixed rhythmic pummel countless others would almost kill for since the cassette network culture of the 1980s. It's an immersive sound that, naturally, shares a little common ground with Ramleh yet emphasizes the monstrous chasms that can be drawn from a sturdy combo of bass-churn and galvanized beats. Whilst the labyrinthine textures beamed in from steelworks remain very much suggestive of a charred psychedelia twisted way beyond any stupid hippie dream, JFK's work remains hewn with a distinctive edge at once uncompromising and agile enough to pull you in without the slightest hint of a protest. Music perfect for the age always hinted at when younger by pessimistic sci-fi films that we sometimes appear to be living in... Eight devastating tracks mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy, London.

Through the walls you can hear the thumping of a full-on beer-soaked, high-energy rock show. Swirling psychedelic tones breaking into blistering riffs, and the relentless chugging and smashing as Duel deals one sonically punishing blow after another. You can feel the intoxicated energy of the crowd, and the band's unpolished swagger as they pay no mind to the microphones set up all around them recording the show. CULTURE Cumbolo LP
2018 repress, originally released 1979. . "As roots reggae harmony groups go, Culture has always been a bit unique. Wholly dominated by the mystical and strangely charismatic lead singer and songwriter Joseph Hill, Culture has always dealt in simple (some would say simplistic) and yet absurdly catchy melodies, astringent harmonies and lyrics of the very dreadest character -- very few love songs, very few party songs, just lots and lots of dire warnings issued to Babylon and its fellow travellers. Although the band is most commonly praised for its work with producer Joe Gibbs (most notably the stone classic Two Sevens Clash album), many the tracks Culture recorded under the supervision of Sonia Pottinger are every bit as good, and Cumbolo includes ten of the best of those. Just about every song here counts as a highlight, but 'Natty Never Get Weary,' 'Poor Jah People,' and a charming adaptation of 'This Train' are all particularly good. And the backup is provided by a shifting contingent of Jamaica's studio aristocracy that includes Sly & Robbie, Ansel Collins, and 'Deadly' Headley Bennett, among other luminaries. Highly recommended." --Rick Anderson, AllMusic

PARIAH Here From Where We Are CD
Arthur Cayzer was a relative late-comer to dance music. He grew up in various hardcore and punk bands before moving to London and being swept away by dubstep. After just six months messing around making his own stuff on Logic, Pitchfork coverage piqued the interest of the legendary R&S, and over the next two years he released three EPs with the Belgian label. Each one showed subtle evolution and further established Pariah on the international scene. Since then, Arthur has continued to DJ round the world and play live with Blawan as Karenn. Musically, though, he's been adrift. With countless unfinished projects cluttering his hard drive, he felt he'd pressured himself into making the music people expected, rather than music that was an honest reflection of himself. It was only by taking a step back to analyze this music that has always resonated with him -- and where, how, when, and in what context it did -- that gave him a renewed confidence in his work. After one track was finished, an album of coherent pieces naturally followed. Here From Where We Are is inspired by a series of very personal reflections, responses, and reactions -- Pariah is keen for people to process it in their own way, free from interference. Opening with the transcendental "Log Jam" which spills into the huge, empty, and plaintive "Pith", the artist distills his experiences into an album of nine moving, multi-layered tracks, where peculiar textures combine with rich harmonies and absorbing melodies into a heady mix of abstracted environments, formally structured songs, and sound collages. Cut and mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy. Manufactured at Optimal Media, Germany.

DAGAR, USTAD ZIA MOHIUDDIN Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani 2LP
Repressed! Double LP version. "Around ten years ago, deep into a cozy and hazy night following a concert with my sound brothers Daniel O'Sullivan and Kristoffer Rygg in London (as Æthenor), they graciously introduced me to a recording of rudra veena (a kind of noble deeper bass relative to the sitar, in a way) as performed by dhrupad master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Dhrupad, for those who do not know, is a branch of Hindustani classical music said to 'show the raga in its clearest and purest form'. It's pacing concentrates heavily on the slow, contemplative alap section and works with specific microtonal gestures and deep characteristics of resonance . . . In early 2015 I was able to make contact with Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's son Bahauddin and some of his American students/disciples, primarily Jeff Lewis. Over time we developed a friendly and educational exchange, access to a massive archive of recordings and developed these two paired titles for my label . . . I'm proud to be able to reveal these to date unreleased archival recordings of one of the masters of dhrupad, Z. M. Dagar, to the public for the first time. Zia Mohiuddin Dagar was the nineteenth generation in a family tradition known as Dagar gharana, a rich lineage which continued and performed the musical form of dhrupad. Initially, dhrupad was a rigorous, austere, devotional genre that was sung in Hindu temples. But between the 16th and the 18th centuries, it became the preeminent genre in royal courts in North and Central India, and the Dagar gharana developed and continued publicly following the eventual loss of court patronage for dhrupad in the 19th century. The French ethnomusicologist Renaud Brizard covers the story of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's life and teaching (a long story also in Seattle, my hometown!), the Dagar family and gharana, the rudra veena and more topics in an extensive set of liner notes in this release. Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani were recorded in a private house concert in Seattle at the home of the Benegals in March 1986 (the week before the accompanying release, Raga Yaman (SOMA 029CD/LP), was recorded). The Benegals were friends (and Shantha Benegal was also a student) of Dagarsahib who sometimes hosted Hindustani music concerts in their home. It's a rare glimpse of a more intimate, personal and perhaps different kind of performance considering the form of dhrupad." --Stephen O'Malley, March 2018, Paris, France Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

Belgium's Amelie Lens launches her own label: Lenske. The first release by Farrago, Risin', comes packing high velocity punches, including a collaboration with Amelie Lens and a remix from Kobosil. "The Riddler" is the first to puncture. The title track, "Risin'", will only be released as the Kobosil remix, a titanium tour of auditory horrors, which also borrows from the EP's other tracks. Lens's signature sultry vocal samples on "Jealousy" draw the contours of a jaw-grinding banger, while "Hidden Power" rounds out the release with a blaring dancefloor siren encased in exquisitely unpredictable arrangement.

ODYSSEE OF NOISES Firedance 12"
Taking on a true trance classic and a personal favorite of his, Len Faki takes you back to the golden era of big melodies and early raves, sharing two very distinct interpretations of "Firedance" by Odyssee Of Noises, the prolific production outfit helmed by Ralf Hildenbeutel. Side A keeps with the emotive theme of the original's "Sunrise" version, tweaking only slightly to cater for the needs of today's dancers. Reshaping the classic to match modern productions for it to be mixed with current bangers, Faki packs the tune's anthemic appeal into a propulsive ride down memory lane.

BRUN, NICO Casual Affair 12"
This record comes with a version for every time and mood of a club night: "Jo Pariotas Cut" of the original mix is the ideal warm-up tune. Flowing on a synth line that calls Mike Huckaby's Waldorf to mind, it is sweet and driving at the same time. The "Original Mix" by LOVEiT's own Nico Brun might be called "Casual Affair", but it comes rolling on a phat wonky Rhodes that brings the groove. The "JK & LDS Reduction" is punchy, minimal, and dubby. Finally, the "A.S.S. Amnesia Returns Mix" is something else entirely.

The title track "Light Up Your Spliff" has broken into the commercial world and has been used by many leading companies for their commercials, most recently by Supreme, known worldwide known for skating and clothing. PHEW Light Sleep LP
2017 release, last copies available. "Propulsive rhythms from early drum machines, whirring electronics and dreamlike vocals make for a jaw-dropping late-career masterpiece from legendary Japanese musician Phew, recorded solo at Phew's home in Tokyo. Phew's career began in the late 1970s as lead singer of Osaka punk group Aunt Sally (whose only full-length was released by Vanity Records in 1979). Ryuichi Sakamoto produced her first solo release in 1980, a two-song single, and in 1981 Pass Records released her debut album, a bonafide classic recorded with original Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit at Conny Plank's studio in Germany. She's forged a singular path over the past thirty-plus years, collaborating with folks from DAF, Einstürzende Neubauten, Boredoms, Anton Fier, Bill Laswell and more. It's borderline sacrilegious to compare an artist as unique as Phew with anyone else, but for those unfamiliar with her work, Light Sleep might be described as a more animated Nico singing (in Japanese) for early Suicide. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D+M, Berlin. Full color jackets and inserts. Edition of 500."

ZEBRA is as naturalistic as it is alien, disrupting outdated boundaries between musical traditions, hierarchies and genre politics. Using forward-looking production techniques and an idiosyncratic instrumental palette -- analog synthesizers, double bass, Fender Rhodes, electronic and acoustic drums, flute, vintage harmonizers and tape delay -- Georgopoulos proposes a vast, shimmering prospect, floralizing an array of styles and smiles -- Fourth World tremors, vibey cosmic jazz, 80s Japanese production, floating kosmische drum atmospherics. Emphasizing 'points of connectivity' in a time when reactive and fractious isolationism threaten in divisive ways, ZEBRA is the sound of interaction. ZEBRA seeks something beyond definition of singularity perspective and division. It is constructive instead of flippant: ecstatic instead of wallowing; clear-eyed instead of opiated, romantic instead of cynical. HAAR, SAM Euso 2LP
Sam Haar is best known as being one half of musical hardware loving duo Blondes with Zach Steinman. Euso is an intense exploration of sounds, textures, and feelings, with field recordings laid over coarse soundscapes. Haar's compositions are woven patchwork-like from the fabric of the sounds that he uses. There is a real feeling that his music is alive, due to the fluidity of his compositions and how the tracks mutate. The album opener "Paradiso" offers colorful synthetics alongside running water and bold sounds. "Hal (The Slip)" features urgent percussion and hypnotic bass sounds, whilst "Gold Coast" sees vibrant synths do battle over emotive strings. "Radial" splits sounds and reforms textures in an ever-changing manner and "Stabilis" snatches lost dialogue over machinery type misshapen beats and poised synths. "Awatsa" is bathed in watery synthetics and is lifted higher by combo of strings and punched beats, as "Hive" offers wonderful synth-based confusion. "Plegadas" rounds off the album with eerie strings, ghosted vocal forms, and enveloping synths.

GANN, KYLE Custer and Sitting Bull CD
"Kyle Gann, voice & electronics, sampling keyboard; Kenneth Patchen, voice; Martha Herr, voice. This recording features three works by Kyle Gann (b. 1955): Custer and Sitting Bull, Scenario, and So Many Little Dyings, from the decade 1994 to 2004. Those familiar with Gann's music will recognize a commitment to just intonation (alternate tunings), paired with a deployment of unexpected meters, often set to frequently shifting tempos. But here we also encounter another side of Gann, a composer preoccupied with texts, the inherent rhythms found within the spoken word, and the dramatic potential of these texts (including poems, interviews, stories, speeches, and even one psychic transmission). A musical reflection on the historic encounter between Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the Lakota leader Sitting Bull, Custer and Sitting Bull (1995-99), presented here in an updated version, is an example of a 'pocket opera,' a kind of one-person opera that blossomed in the unfunded spaces of downtown Manhattan. From 1999 to 2007 Gann performed it live himself, narrating the drama using various historical texts set to a MIDI keyboard accompaniment tuned to just intonation (ranging from 20 to 31-note-to-the-octave scales). While it takes the form of reimagined American history, Custer is perhaps most centrally about the value of sustained, repeated listening. Indeed, Gann's use of just intonation not only rewards but arguably requires many hearings to access certain subtleties. The title of So Many Little Dyings (1994) is taken from the Kenneth Patchen poem 'And What with the Blunders' (from First Will & Testament, 1939). The entire work originates from the pitch and rhythm of Patchen's spoken voice, which Gann sampled and transcribed from a recorded recitation of the poem. Listening to it, however, one might not perceive this borrowing immediately, as the work begins with the sound of a microtonal toy piano imitating the rhythms and contours of Patchen's voice. Very slowly, over the course of the 7-minute work, the piano's melody is taken over by a recording of Patchen's sampled voice. Scenario, for soprano and virtual orchestra, was written between 2003-2004 but wasn't performed live until 2012. The text is taken from a 1932 S. J. Perelman story of the same name, which consists of a non-stop, breathless collage of filmic clichés. On the page, Perelman's text continues for pages without paragraph break and includes dialogue excerpts, Hollywood rumors, and behind-the-scenes film directions. In Gann's setting of it, what he calls 'a surrealist collage opera, the musical analog of an animated cartoon, for theatrical soprano and virtual orchestra,' each collaged portion is set in a corresponding style and character, so the soprano must alternate rapidly between each affect and singing style throughout the 17-minute work."

KHALAB Black Noise 2084 CD
Khalab has summoned a futuristic Afro-centric soundscape by weaving a poly-phonic tapestry of future bass, jazz, and field recordings. The LP's title track tells hard truths from the mind of spoken word artist Tenesha The Wordsmith. Along with her words the LP's title has been augmented with a date marking the arrival of an emancipated future. Black Noise 2084 casts aside the worn and surface level cliché of black music being soul music. Khalab guides you to the beginning of a journey, the journey of rhythms and he takes you within earshot of the voices and spirits that carried them. Soul gained over eons of terror and forced transportation, soul driving survival against systematic oppression, wholesale against a people. Khalab looks to the noise, the messages, the spirits, and evokes the light of Black Noise 2084 out of darkness. From dystopian roots, the beat marabout Khalab has led his assembly of messengers to invoke this myth of cathartic liberation. Black Noise 2084 features the voices of musical voyagers seeking new pathways: Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd, Tamar "The Collocutor" Osborn, the master Gabin Dabire, Tenesha The Wordsmith, Tommaso Cappellato, Prince Buju, and Clap! Clap! Within the tapestry of Khalab's Black Noise 2084 the myth moves through its cycle of life, initiations and ceremonies with a cast of unnamed messengers. Khalab was invited to work with field recordings from the archives of the Royal Museum for Central Africa of Bruxelles. The museum's recordings made for a post-colonial world, hold ethnographic and historical insights into the cultures of the region over the last 500 years. The Museum is far from the horrors that Belgian King, Leopold II unleashed during his colonial reign, however it is a dark legacy that is far from absolved. Black Noise 2084 opens a portal where displaced rhythms, chants, screams, and dreams collide with quaking bass, a vortex of shattering synths, jazz rains and emotion all amalgamate. Empires for millennia thrived across the African continent and Empires are being willed to rise. 2084 a time when rhythms have shed the cargo of their haunted odyssey. The myth of Black Noise 2084 is a new dawn where the ghosts of Leopold and all his kind are finally excised. Atonement in hearing the truths carried across the ages, carried in noise, Black Noise.

LEIMER, K. Threnody CD
"Threnody by K. Leimer is a music of disorientation, error and loss. Free of any particular sense of continuity or structure, Threnody dwells in an absent-minded and forgetful state, inhabiting an aftermath of events too disorienting to be completely comprehended. Highly atmospheric, the music draws from influences as diverse as Arve Henriksen, David Sylvian, Taylor Deupree and Biosphere. Shattered phrases emerge among shrouded details in a state of sustained incompleteness. In a departure for Leimer, this music is highly improvised, mostly studio-generated in real-time. 'I approached the work by repeatedly abandoning it and, at some later time, after pursuing some other task, after days or weeks of new outrages, wandered back and tried to once more pick up the threads.' Threnody is music tuned to a fractured time. K. Leimer founded Palace of Lights in 1979. Leimer's work has also been issued by Autumn, First Terrace, Les Giants, Origin Peoples and RVNG and his cassette work is included in the critically acclaimed VOD box set American Cassette Culture. Leimer has been actively producing music since the mid 1970s -- his current catalog includes eighteen solo albums plus collaborative albums with Savant and Marc Barreca. His work is included in the collection of The British Library."

M.A.K.U. SOUNDSYSTEM 5 Fuegos 12"
MAKU Soundsystem's fifth release 5 Fuegos finds the Brooklyn-based, self-proclaimed "immigrant beat" band with a fresh new stripped down sound of five players: bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and vocals. Appropriately, the emphasis is on the beat, and while the brass section and keyboards are now gone, the principle vocalists Liliana Conde (who plays electronic percussion as well) and bassist Juan Ospina are still leading the charge with their stirringly emotional voices out front. And as on their last Peace & Rhythm release The Mix, the dynamic pair of Liliana and Juan are supported by guitarist Camilo Rodríguez, Andrés Jiménez on drum kit, and master percussionist Moris Cañate on tambor alegre (folkloric Colombian hand drum) with all three sharing backing vocals. 5 Fuegos means "Five Fires" and is named for the five members of the band as well as the five songs on the record. The EP features five smoking psychedelic tunes full of originality, hot rocking Afro-funk and deep Colombian roots, each one energized by a burning inner light. This limited edition record also contains two bonus instrumental versions to inspire MCs and remixers. Yellow/splatter/black vinyl with download card.

"1978's Chairs Missing represented perhaps the biggest conceptual leap made during this period of Wire and was widely misunderstood at the time yet it remains, to the band and production crew Wire's favorite '70s album. If Pink Flag proposed an almost cut and paste approach to deconstructing rock history, Chairs Missing proposed something more radical, a definite futurism with much less influence from its antecedents. Chairs Missing was at once more stark and more lush than its predecessor and has exerted its own influence on the course of cultural history, having laid down one of the earliest (if not the earliest) blueprints for the genuinely post-punk aesthetic."

WIRE 154 LP
LP version. "1979's 154 represented the final tableau in Wire's Harvest released '70s triptych and was the first Wire album to be released to a universal set of five star reviews from the British rock weeklies, thus it represented the point when the British 'pop culture establishment' publicly recognized Wire's primacy. '154 makes 95 percent of the competition look feeble' wrote Nick Kent in the NME, 'Wire are achieving a lot of things other--and more recognized--names have been striving for' wrote Chris Westwood in Record Mirror (a paper that had slagged off Pink Flag). 'The album is a musical tour de force' wrote Jon Savage in Melody Maker. Many said it was the album that Bowie and Eno had failed to make with Lodger (as hinted in the RM review), it was on John Lennon's playlist. Without a doubt, even if record sales did not bear it out, Wire had 'arrived.'"

SEV DAH Proletarijat 006 12"
The woman featured on the cover of this sixth Proletarijat release is the nurse Milja Marin. This was a household portrait in Partisan circles, called Kozarcanka, "woman from Kozara". After the war, Milja said she had very little to smile about, nor did she want to carry a rifle. But she did it anyway. Our struggle thus demands. With this release, Sev Dah continues to celebrate those who dedicated their lives fighting fascism. Two old-school techno beasts as a nod to those who came before us, finishing with a futuristic space-traveler on the B side.

SODDELL, THEMBI Love Songs CD/BOOK
The music of Australian artist Thembi Soddell resides in a zone of unrelenting darkness and physical affect. Working at the nexus of raw emotion, sound design, and musique concrete, she creates sound worlds that are effortlessly dense and abyss-like. In her performances, she explores sonic environments which swallow the audience. By utilizing intense sound pressure and varying dynamics she creates profoundly unsettling, but fulfilling, experiences for her audiences. Love Songs, her latest work, is easily the clearest articulation of her methodologies. A work of extreme dynamics and intensities, the record is one of the most fierce, sonic expressions to be delivered from an Australian artist in recent years. "The title Love Songs," Thembi explains, "is a little dark humor on my behalf. As the compositional process evolved the work became a meditation on the lived experience of insidious forms of abuse within supposedly loving relationships, in connection to certain forms of mental illness. These experiences are ones of extremes and emotional intensities; the tensions between horror, beauty, rage, desire, confusion, love, and perceptual annihilation. Also, a good deal of the source material for the album is voice. I asked Alice Hui-Sheng Chang to vocalize perceptual collapse, which I sampled and manipulated into expressions of these themes. So, these are my love songs." Published alongside an extensive book, outlining more literal readings of her ideas of sonic affect, contemporary relationships and the nature of becoming, Soddell's Love Songs is an utterly personal and compelling listen. It's equal parts horror, anxiety, relief and exhilaration, often in the same instant. A truly remarkable rendering of sound that extends the possibilities for how we are embraced and engulfed by the acoustics we encounter. Thembi Soddell (b. Australia 1980) is a sound artist and electroacoustic composer with an interest in psychology, perception, subjectivity, and affect in relation to intense encounters with sound. Her distinct approach to composition exploits dynamic extremes, creating volatile, evocative sound experiences with a disquieting edge. She creates works for recording, installation and performance -- including multiple CD releases, presentations at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and City Gallery Wellington, and two European tours in a duo with cellist Anthea Caddy.

GAMA & LUIS FERNANDES, JOANA At The Still Point Of The Turning World CD
Joana Gama and Luís Fernandes's new offering At The Still Point Of The Turning World, borrows its title from T. S. Eliot's poem "Burnt Norton". It is a record of restless motion, lilting and pulsing with a sense of gentle determination. Born out of a period of mutual loss, the works carry a bittersweet sentiment. Bitter in the sense of loss; sweet in the sense of lingering memory and influences recognized of those departed. It is also a record that, like the poem from which it takes its title, mediates on the nature of time and the way music must be explored as temporal art. The very nature of the compositions, their meaning and structural qualities unfold across the record with a particular and measured temporal gesture. This sense of measure is the result of musicians involved, guided by Gama and Fernandes, working for and against one another within each of the tracks. Pieces such as "Neither Flesh Nor Fleshless" and "Lucid Stillness" capture this essence. The sharp attack of their rhythmic spines, create macro environments within which instruments float into and out of focus. Rather than simply acting as anchor points for the pieces, these markers become buoyant amidst atmospheric layers of strings, percussion, and horns. The music swells and breaths. Commissioned by Câmara Municipal de Guimarães and A Oficina / Westway Lab Festival in 2017, At The Still Point Of The Turning World is the most considered output from this duo to date. Informed by a shared interest in the timbral connections between piano and electronics, these pieces extend outward from Gama and Fernandes and in combination with Orquestra de Guimarães and arrangements from José Alberto Gomes, they create a charged collection of minimalist inspired sound fields. The album was mixed and produced by Lawrence English at Negative Space in late 2017. In 2012, Joana Gama and Luís Fernandes met during the 100Cage show in Lisbon, Portugal. Having not cross paths beforehand, the two immediately felt a kinship born of a mutual interest in experimental music traditions. They began collaborating immediately and in 2014, the pair released work as QUEST, which was widely acclaimed in their home country. The duo has made the soundtrack for a number of prizewinners short-films. On this recording they laid out the groundwork for what was to come of their partnership.

NAKAMURA, TOSHIMARU Re-Verbed (No-Input Mixing Board 9) CD
Re-Verbed (No-Input Mixing Board 9) is the latest edition from Tokyo-based artist Toshimaru Nakamura. The "No-Input Mixing Board" is a unique instrument pioneered by Nakamura. As its name suggests, it is a mixing console within which external no input exists. The instrument is fueled only by its own feedback. Initially used by Nakamura as a more tonal instrument, creating incredibly high frequency outputs, over time the mixing board has become decidedly more rhythmic and harmonic. It is this sonic territory that is the focus of this edition. Re-Verbed (No-Input Mixing Board 9) is by far one of Nakmura's most musical recordings. The board's tonality is front-and-center; low pulses and cavernous pulses fizzle and murmur with a subtle but frenetic energy. Drifting into decidedly dub-oriented directions, Nakamura allows the instrument to breathe; specifically he finds new dimensions to the ways interference can be brought into harmony within the pieces. While the instrument might suggest a sense of indeterminacy, Nakamura's intimate relationship with it means he can maintain an unerring sense of control over it. Re-Verbed (No-Input Mixing Board 9) is evidence of his intense capacity to create profound work with this most unusual of devices. A conjuring of something truly unique from literally nothing. Toshimaru Nakamura's instrument is the no-input mixing board, which describes a way of using a standard mixing board as an electronic music instrument, producing sound without any external audio input. The use of the mixing board in this manner is not only innovative in the sounds it can create but, more importantly, in the approach this method of working with the mixer demands. The unpredictability of the instrument requires an attitude of obedience and resignation to the system and the sounds it produces, bringing a high level of indeterminacy and surprise to the music. Nakamura pioneered this approach to the use of the mixing board in the mid-1990s and has since then appeared on over one hundred audio publications, including nine solo CDs. From 1998 to 2003 Nakamura and Tetuzi Akiyama ran the concert series Improvisation Series at Bar Aoyama and then later the Meeting at Off Site series of concerts. Both these concert series were crucially important in exposing a new manner to improvised music (referred to as Electro Acoustic Improvisation) to the Japanese public and to foreign musicians visiting Japan, making Tokyo one of the global hotspots for this new approach to music.

The Bonaparte's trio was born after the split of two bands, Kan Ji Zai founded by Pat Griffiths from 23 Skidoo, Ruben Azca, and Baroque Bordello. According to Giri, the boss of the Gibus, the punk public usually became agitated sitting very attentively at the Kan Ji Zai gig on October 4th, 1983. In 1984 after their first record the EP Today, the drummer Prad and the bass player Pix from Baroque Bordello founded together, along with Ruben Azca from Kan Ji Zai, the band The Bonaparte's, initially to be ephemeral for a gig that should have been unique at the Opéra Night programmed by La Sébale with three tracks: "Battle Of Iena", "Waterloo's Front", and "Shiny Light" played in one single sequence. The trio was extended with a guest saxophone player Lazslo. The audience didn't expect such a band and was very surprised, encouraging the band to go on. And that's what they did, two of the members of Baroque Bordello were asked to leave the band and Pat Griffiths joined them. The Bonaparte's were born. Shiny Battles was created a first mini-album in the Studio Garage in 1985. This mini-LP is a marvel as it associates the pure tradition of the French coldwave bands adoring the bass with high-level British artistic quality influenced by the best of the post-punk scene: The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees -- The audio reissue by Rotorelief proposes the mini-album Shiny Battles with six unreleased bonus tracks. Micro-formed sound pools of cold extrusion collide with voltage-controlled pulsations, tape-echoed modulations, and eruptive sound-deformations. Electrostatic charge (caused by compressed configurations of mechanical rhythms in "Kontaktmechanik") has been combined with sonic lubrications of processed accelerators in "Umspulung". "Abrasion Métallique" contains all the acoustic trademarks by Conrad Schnitzler: excessive experiments with dissonant portamentos of the EMS-Synthi A and Korg MS20, overlaid by metallic pressure drag of the modified rhythm-machine. NURSE WITH WOUND Homotopy To Marie 2LP
Rotorelief present a reissue of Homotopy To Marie. the fifth album by Nurse With Wound, originally released in 1982. Music and sleeve created by Steven Stapleton. The album is "a step on from the Dadaist rock of Merzbild Schwet, with much use of tape manipulation and classical avant-garde techniques". The album, which combines tape edits with resonating gong tones and disembodied children's voices to create a sonic collage, is far removed from the harsh improvisations of the group's early albums. The title of the brief closing track derives from a passage from "Les Chants de Maldoror" (1869), a surreal poetic novel written by Le Comte de Lautréamont. This appropriation of a phrase from Maldoror is shared in common with the title of Nurse With Wound's debut album, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979); both phrases appear in Lautréamont's work. The album was first issued on Stapleton's own United Dairies label on vinyl, cassette, and later in remastered compact disc including an extra track "Astral Dustbin Dirge". This masterpiece reissue is the official full, double album from the original recording sessions. The four tracks from the original LP are accompanied by additional recordings from the same period. This second, double album masterpiece in the "silver collection" of Nurse With Wound albums, is a technically better, crystal clear performance, in comparison to the original 1982 cut. A composer, improviser, and collaborator who has shared stages with Matmos, Julia Holter, Forest Swords, Steve Gunn, OM, Deradoorian, and many others, a world traveler and artist in residence, his third, self-titled album, is an expression of his life in music and a reflection of life in his home city of Brisbane. Primarily developed in a Brisbane bedroom, home to a banjo, acoustic guitar, and synthesizer; the album is lilting, elegant and delicate -- the sound of joy and imagination. There's a wide-eyed sense of positivity and discovery throughout. Tuttle's music meanders, swings, and sometimes soars like birds across a radiant sunset. Each note feels alive, with harmonics stretching out to meet the neighboring notes, much as the Brisbane River winds and the eucalypts and palm trees of Tuttle's home suburb of New Farm intersect with a constant vibrant hum of humanity. Andrew Tuttle's body of work maintains both a sharp creative focus and a wide-eyed spirit of exploration. Like time-lapse photography, it unfolds its colors and textures with an astonishing gracefulness and wonderment. Born of reflection rather than of nostalgia, Tuttle's third album and his performed works are the sound of re-discovering one's local natural and urban environments -- and the importance of embracing love, family, and friendship in a turbulent world. Tuttle's first two solo albums Slowcation (2015) and Fantasy League (RMSG 015CD, 2016) heavily played on an inherent tension between Tuttle's primary musical interests of acoustic instrumentation and digital synthesis. On his third, eponymous album, Tuttle has brought these worlds closer together -- sparse decayed banjo and fragile guitar motifs are at one with shimmering filtered delays and bubbling electronics. For this third album, a fortnight residency at Stockholm's EMS Elektronmusikstudion and collaborations with Charlie Parr (electric guitar), Dina Maccabee (viola), Chris Rainier (prepared guitar), and Joel Saunders (trumpet) were an initial creative impetus, however these seemingly disparate explorations have manifested themselves into Tuttle's most cohesive work to date. The final album, a result of several careful revisions, reflects Tuttle's belief in this work as a major personal and creative statement. In Andrew Tuttle's world, folk and bluegrass rituals, ragas, and drones cozy up to electronic technology like they've known each other their whole lives. Tuttle dwells in a between world of ambient and folk genre that feels like a community all of its own.

I REFUSE IT! Cronache Del Videotopo 2LP
Spittle Records present a reissue of the I Refuse It! compilation Cronache Del Videotopo, originally released on CD in 2005. Long awaited re-issue for one of the most influential and controversial post-punk combos of the "Granducato era". After more than three decades, I Refuse It! are still quite a great thing. Rock n' roll's later reaching of higher peaks of brutality finally made acceptable what once was considered noise and chaos and now make them appear just a bit less subversive, but their impact is still strongly felt. So, collecting and publishing their complete output in one album is definitely an historical act. Differently from Cronache Del Videotopo, the CD published in 2005 by the glorious Wide Records, the present double LP includes also their great version of "Atto Di Forza N. 10" from I Ragazzi Del Sole, a real gem from the '60s Italian beat repertoire. They were certainly a bit too far out for a large part of the aficionados of "classic punk" but deserved attention, at least for those who began to be tired of the old stereotypes. It's no coincidence that in a review of the Permanent Scar/Sfregio Permanente cassette (1983) in the magazine Il Mucchio Selvaggio their style was described as "experimental hardcore" and "a sort of Meat Puppets oriented sound". Finally, between 1982 and 1983, Italian punk got its spot on the international map. In fact, even if there were already some Italian punk bands, it was not before the emergence of the hardcore movement that you could really start talking about a real Italian scene. Needless to add that this was not just a simple musical issue, back in the day, for many, hardcore punk was mainly an attitude and a way of life. In Tuscany, the whole scene became known under the acronym of GDCH (Granducato Hardcore) and I Refuse It! (together with CCM, Wardogs, Putrid Fever, Traumatic, Juggernaut, and others) became one of its most significant bands. Because of their varied and multiple inspirations and tendency to experiment, it's hard to consider I Refuse It! as simply a hardcore band. This double-LP collection compiles their complete recorded output for the first time and is an essential piece of Italian punk history.

BUTLER, SERENA We Want Neither Clean Hands Nor Beautiful Souls 12"
Serena Butler returns with We Want Neither Clean Hands Nor Beautiful Souls, a four-track recording of Butler's personal juncture with the Queerverse and his engagement in queer politics. "If Nature Is Unjust, Change Nature" is a shadowy crescendo of whispered rhythms and minimal-synth leitmotivs. "Globular Hymen" is the club supernova of the lot; an interstellar blizzard of layered arpeggios. "Science Is Not An Expression But A Suspension Of Gender" lays on the feel of afterlife, a dubbed-out lullaby between lo-fi drums and subtle interference patterns of noise. "And With Sexism Came Disparity" unleashes a vocal swarm of declaration and rebellion.

"Tarkomania Dub" takes the listener one circle deeper into the groove-filled anxiety, flickering between a set of industrial sounds, the guttural voice of Takovsky's writer, and warm, moody synth. "Tarkomania Acapella" is a summation of these elements with an emphasis on the "Stalker" monologue.

VA Midnight In Tokyo Vol. 2 CD
Midnight In Tokyo Vol. 2, the second installment to the compilation series that rounds up hidden gems by Japanese artists that's perfect for listening at night in Tokyo, is here. This time the collection brings together some tasty electric jazz fusion from the '80s, compiled by Dubby, the man behind the online record store Ondas. The compilation begins with "Hikobae", a dark and slow cosmic jazz by saxophonist Genji Sawai, followed by "Danza Lucumi", an odd Caribbean-style jam by Today's Latin Project, a band fronted by Tadaaki Misago of Tokyo Cuban Boys, with arrangements by Yasuaki Shimizu. "On The Coast" is a soulful and mellow vocal track arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto, from guitarist Shigeru Suzuki's album White Heat (1979), and fusion boogie cut "In The Hot City" is by Air Suspension Club Band, which was a one-off project by a mysterious artist. The melancholic soul jazz number "So Long America" is the title track from the album Yasunori Soryo, along with Jim Rocks, released in '82, following a stint in America with the band Brown Rice. "Twisty" is a tropical reggae tune from the album Samba Kathy, an underrated classic by Jugando which was released on Trash, a sublabel of one of Japan's finest jazz labels, Trio. "Samarkand" is an electric Latin jazz jam that sounds like something Miles Davis and Santana could have played on, performed by a Latin funk band from Fussa. "Imagery" is a primal African fusion track by Katsutoshi Morizono With Bird's Eye View, Morizono was a member of the prog rock band Yoninbayashi. "Windmill" is the most acoustic sounding tune on this compilation, a breezy Brazilian affair with a Hermeto Pascoal feel. "Mystery Of Asian Port" is by the band Parachute, which consisted of Japanese fusion giants like Akira Inoue, Tatsuo Hayashi, and Masaki Matsubara. The cosmic jazz record sounds like something Daniele Baldelli would play in his sets. "Bay Sky Provincetown 1977" is a classic Japanese fusion tune by guitarist Yuji Toriyama. The set also features the mellow but danceable "Heatwave" by keyboardist Keiichi Oku, featuring a female vocalist (which some have identified as Rie Ida), and last but not least, closing out the 13-track compilation is "Day Dream At The Bob's Beach", a wonderful urban fusion with a beautiful vibraphone melody, from the Japanese fusion classic album that was a one-off project by studio musicians, Safari. Also features Kingkong Paradise, Om, and Safari.

PAGE AND HIS PARADISE MUSIC, PAUL Pacific Paradise 2LP
Double LP version. Comes in thick, magazine-style format. 32-page booklet. Paul Page -- poet, pagan, and playboy of Polynesian pop and Hapa Haole exotica. The music on this unusual exotic album, takes you right to the ocean's edge, mingles you with jungle drums and animals, the booming surf, seagulls, and ocean liners in a coral kaleidoscope of sounds. This is the real deal authentic tiki bar soundtrack. Paul Page and his Paradise Music entertained in Polynesian themed restaurants all over Southern California from the late '30s to the mid-60s, then all the way out to the Kona Coast during the late '60s and early '70s. The whole time, he kept leaving behind these little independent albums, recorded specifically for the purpose of selling them to the people coming to his small venue shows... which, when you think about it, is basically what all the most-worthy bands to dig do these days, outside the doting eye of the lame record industry. Dude was so ahead of his time! Paul Page was a singer, piano player, bandleader, writer/composer, radio, and TV host, artist of oils, professional basketball player, and much more. He published many albums during the 1950s-60s and wrote hundreds of songs. His story has never previously been told and his original recordings are very rare, in fact some of them are completely unknown and undocumented, and much sought after by collectors. Paul Page is really the only one to mix actual, authentic Hawaiian music and other Polynesian and Pacific Ocean influences, with the nomadic feel of the seafaring Anglo working sailor man with a sense of American pop sophistication, based in jazz-age. It is his cheerful insistence to employ every known cliché from the Polynesian pop dictionary that makes his stylings so charming to today's tiki lounger. Subliminal Sounds now brings you the full Paul Page saga on this comprehensive compilation. Includes a 32-page booklet with in-depth liner notes by author and pop historian Domenic Priore, with a foreword by author and urban archeologist Sven Kirsten.

COLTRANE, ALICE Lord Of Lords LP
"Originally released in 1972, Lord Of Lords was Alice Coltrane's final album for Impulse! and the last installment in her awe-inspiring trilogy that also included Universal Consciousness and World Galaxy. While all three records featured strings alongside a jazz ensemble, Lords Of Lords stood apart from its predecessors due to the sheer size of the orchestra (12 violins, 6 violas and 7 cellos, arranged and conducted by Coltrane herself) and its refined, blissful performances -- shining a vital light on the devotional path that she would follow for the rest of her career. On the first two pieces, 'Andromeda's Suffering' and 'Sri Rama Ohnedaruth' (titled after the spiritual name for her late husband), Alice's dazzling piano and harp blend perfectly with the blanket of strings, while the haunting rhythm section of Charlie Haden and Ben Riley and a magnificent, droning electric organ emerge immaculately on the title track and closer 'Going Home.' Coltrane's musical vision is bold in its imagination and cosmic in scope, yet remains intensely personal and immediate. Lord Of Lords points inward as much as to the beyond, recalling her classical roots and recasting Eastern modes to radically invert the American avant-garde and spiritual jazz traditions. This first-time vinyl reissue has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

SPACEMEN 3 For All The Fucked-up Children Of This World We Give You Spacemen 3 LP
"In 1984, Spacemen 3 made their first-ever recording session and sold a few cassettes at now-legendary, incendiary gigs. Growing out of the dual guitar attack of Jason Pierce and Pete Kember, the band's three-piece line up with Natty Brooker on drums offered a liturgical take on '60s psychedelia, bare-knuckle blues and stunning feedback. This early glimpse into the Spacemen 3 cosmos -- crafted by and for all the fucked-up children of this world -- captures the band's unorthodox approach to rock 'n' roll with nuance and power. While the raw atavism of 'Things'll Never Be The Same' and 'Walkin' With Jesus' would be scaled back considerably on later recordings, the one-chord propulsion of 'T.V. Catastrophe' and hardwired stomping of 'Fixing To Die' draw from a primitive force that served as the impetus for the group's formation. For All The Fucked-Up Children remains the perfect introduction to Spacemen 3. Not only do these demos reveal the auspicious beginnings of two teenagers born on the same day in Rugby, England, but also compelling clues that point toward the exploration and eventual refining of their signature sound."

NICHOLS & THE SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, ROGER Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends CD
Tapete Records presents a reissue of Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends, a 1968 album by Roger Nichols. Nichols wrote some of the biggest hits of the 20th century and his songs were recorded by such illustrious names as Frank Sinatra, The Carpenters, The Monkees, and many more. Before he made a name for himself as a songwriter, he recorded a disc of his own for the ultra-hip A&M label in 1968, the legendary Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends album. The friends in the title were siblings Melinda and Murray MacLeod, joined by a veritable who's who of the Californian music scene. Alas, not even the presence of sound engineer Bruce Botnick, fresh from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds production (1966), Van Dyke Parks and A&M in-house producer Tommy LiPuma could rescue the album from its fate as a flop. The sales figures may have been disappointing, but Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends ultimately attained classic status as a lost masterpiece of Californian pop, earning its rightful place in discerning record collections alongside Pet Sounds, Forever Changes (1967), and Head (1968). Possibly the most important LP of the soft-pop/sunshine-pop era has been reissued on more than one occasion over the years, yet has been unavailable in recent times, unless you are willing to part with vast sums of money on typical online platforms. CD version includes three bonus tracks.

WE ARE MUFFY The Charcoal Pool CD
From somewhere wild and strange in Cornwall come the idiosyncratic acoustic sounds of We Are Muffy, the happy alliance of Nick Duffy (The Lilac Time, Bait) and Angeline Morrison (The Mighty Sceptres, The Ambassadors of Sorrow). With influences including the Incredible String Band, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Sam Cooke, Max Romeo, and Shirley & Dolly Collins weaving through their music, We Are Muffy spin poetic narratives of remembered and imagined pasts. Their distinctive strain of folk music combines vocal harmonies with unexpected instrumentation (lyre, music box, cutlery, bottle tops, broken china), in amongst the expected (autoharp, banjo, double bass). It all began when Nick asked Angeline to provide some guest vocals on his Simulacra Two album (2016), a collection of unorthodox covers. Whilst lively debate ensued on the themes of folk song and cover versions, it soon emerged that they shared a common homeland: Birmingham. In scenes reminiscent of the industrial heyday of this city they began to turn out song upon song depicting the peculiarities of growing up there. "Frosted Candy" is a love song to the delights of color, of texture, and the delicious mysteries of the adult world that reveal themselves upon discovery of the makeup counter at the local chemist. A joyful song that captures the uncertain balance between appearance and identity, outward poise and inward angst performing an intricate dance in a miniature bildungsroman. "Milk Bar" depicts everyday life on the furthest reaches of the 56 bus route, back when Spaghetti Junction was still being built, somewhere just over the horizon. When you were just as likely to go to Elmdon Airport as the Beaufort cinema if you were a teenager looking for light entertainment. Recorded in Nick's garden studio -- once a suburban double garage, now inaccessible by motor vehicle due to encroaching foliage -- The Charcoal Pool is replete with the sounds of the neighborhood. Crows, robins, and seagulls all put in an appearance, as does the rain on the skylights and the trains on the adjacent branch line. You may have already heard We Are Muffy on BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing, and BBC Radios 2 & 3.

SNOW, WAYNE Freedom TV LP
2017 release. After two incredible EPs, Wayne Snow -- the Nigerian-born, Berlin-based vocalist and songwriter -- presents his debut album on Tartelet Records. Freedom TV is the natural sequel to the Max Graef-produced tasters Red Runner (2014) and Rosie (2015); a project marinated in Afro-Caribbean, soulful grooves and topped by Wayne's effortless falsetto acrobatics. As the title suggests, Freedom TV is an album with themes of liberty, struggle, and creative identity pumping through its veins. Within ten tracks, Snow fluently meanders between musical styles: from low-tempo soothers, like album opener "Cooler" and "Fall", to the syncopated bruk of "The Rhythm" and cosmic funk escapades found on "Nothing Wrong". Production comes from three varied and solid sources. The tag-team between Snow and fellow Berliner, Max Graef -- which started on Graef's 2014 debut Rivers Of The Red Planet (TARTALB 003LP) -- is in full effect. The result is six tracks ("Cooler", "Still In The Shell", "Drunk", "Red Runner", "Rosie", and "Fall") anchored by Graef's now-signature brew of warm-to-the-touch boom-bap, soul, jazz, and house. Elsewhere, trips to see the French capital and Neue Grafik yielded three stormers: "The Rhythm", "Freedom RIP", and "Nothing But The Best". Naples-formed, Berlin-based duo Nu Guinea also lend a hand on "Nothing Wrong", an up-tempo jam which will receive remix treatment from Francis Inferno Orchestra as well as the pair themselves. The works of criminally overlooked, Zimbabwean guerilla fighter-poet, Freedom Nyamubaya (?1958-2015), bind everything together. It's her verses, which occupy the end of soul-searching, Peven Everett-esque joint "Freedom RIP" and provide a regular referential touchpoint. More than anything, Freedom TV is the soundtrack for anyone seeking a wholesome exploration of groove. Smooth and contagiously danceable at points, Wayne Snow has arrived in album territory with an assured cool.

HOLMES, DAVID Mosaic - Music From The HBO Limited Series LP
LP version. Red vinyl. Initially released as an interactive app in which the viewer directed the narrative -- Mosaic is a six-part HBO series conceived and directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Sharon Stone. Mosaic is a twisting tale of passion, intrigue, and deception focusing on the disappearance of a high-profile resident of picturesque Summit, Utah and the four-year effort by law- enforcement and civilians to discover the truth behind the crime. With that in mind, David Holmes's original soundtrack for Mosaic weaves as intriguing a tale. Recorded between Belfast and Los Angeles by Holmes, the album features a modern-day wrecking crew of musicians. Echoes of Ennio Morricone abound alongside the influence of avant-garde pioneers and Holmes's current soundtrack contemporaries in a selection of deep listening tracks. To quote Mark Kermode, Mosaic outlines Holmes's expertise at "ratcheting up the tension" with strings, horns, and synthesizers swelling throughout. As this tension peaks there is inevitable release -- in rhythmic and harmonic tracks such as "What I Want Is The Red Room" and Badalamenti-esque lounge eeriness in the likes of "Four Years Later" -- guiding the 20 cues presented on this release into a cohesive, full, and nuanced album that reveals subtle and rewarding intricacies on each repeated listen. Mosaic once again outlines Holmes as a modern master of the original soundtrack.

Keeno18 first two releases on Ultramajic were strange, fuzzy, and dizzy. Los Green has Keeno18 juiced on acid and cold-pressed in his own style: buttoned up. "Inquiry" is dripping acid over a straight beat, hypnotic and appreciating of the subtle. "Dances With Leaves" is the greenest of all four tracks.

BENOIT B Vague A L'ame EP 12"
Banileue Records boss Benoit B lands on Wisdom Teeth with four dazzling new-age steppers. The record follows on the Japonaiserie EP (2017). On Vague À L'âme, the melodic ideas developed on Japonaiserie are set to work against broken beats and UK-leaning rhythms. The EP is bookended by a pair of euphoric broken-beat rollers: first, the melodic bleeps and weighted kicks of the title track; and to close, the scuzzy pads and glissando synths of "Kimono". Sat between them are two lean, smoky half-steppers: the record's vocal centerpiece, "Gyvenimo T?km?" (featuring Dália), and "Ice Valley", an intergalactic slow jam.
