EVERGREEN Overseas CD
The French trio Evergreen (previously We Are Evergreen) grew up listening to pop music from the US and the UK. Yet, like many of the most influential artists of today's French pop scene (Fishbach, Halo Maud, etc.), they value both French and English to deliver their message. This new album Overseas was recorded with Ash Workman (François & The Atlas Mountains, Metronomy, and Christine And The Queens), and sees the band use a warm sound loaded with synthesizers, drawing influences from the likes of Django Django, AIR, and Metronomy to craft percussive electro-pop songs.

CANNELL & ANDRE BOSMAN, LAURA Reckonings CD
Reckonings is the debut album from experimental violinists Laura Cannell and André Bosman. 12th century melodies mingle with the drone of long sleeping Saxons, evoking medieval cultures on distant planets. Spontaneous composition and excursions to a medieval church capture their playing with no planning or shaping of the music beforehand, keeping the music vital and direct. Never in the building for more than half-an-hour, Reckonings is made up of visits through the seasons with wind rattling, sun burning, and snow melting.

PERRY, LEE 'SCRATCH' Game Of The Throne EP 12"
New and unreleased tracks recorded at Mad Professor's Ariwa Studio in South London. "This Is The Upsetter" sees Lee chanting and philosophizing over a rollicking bass, underpinned by understated guitar and perfectly placed hats, and continues to the straight up dub, "Lion Share Dub". And on the flipside is the title track, "Game Of The Throne", with brass section and backing vocals belting out soul fire, with Lee offering his words to Selassie.

MIGHTY MAYTONES, THE Showcase Album: Tune In And Rock LP
2018 repress of these undated 1970s recordings, repro of the original Pioneer International version. "The Maytones is still one of those highly regarded names in the history of reggae music and upon listening to what they recorded in the golden era it's easy to see why. Pearl after pearl, the group delivered the goods time and time again. A word like 'timeless' is truly a cliché in describing the sweet two-male harmony sounds of this group, but it fits perfectly when talking of The Maytones work from that period and many other constellations of their ilk. Vernon Buckley and harmony singer Gladstone Grant started what was to become a very successful career as a harmony group back home in May Pen, a town in the parish of Clarendon, and The Maytones was just one of many excellent duos from Jamaica that sprung from the early reggae era, with the difference that they stayed on top for a longer time than most competitors at the time."

THOMPSON, LINVAL Cool Down LP
2018 repress. Channel One recordings from 1974-6. With Robbie Shakespeare, "Chinner" Smith, Tony Chin, Ossie Hibbert, Agustus Pablo, Tommy McCook, etc. "Bunny Lee's 'flying cymbal' production dominates the session and consequently the listener might recognize several of these cuts from dub compilations on Blood & Fire. Generally speaking, though, this is not a dub record. Only the last song on each side is followed by a dub version. These are straight-ahead rockers with no frills and, depending on the pressing, rather muddy production. It is also worth mentioning that 'Money Money' and 'Blood Gonna Run,' among others, find Robbie Shakespeare at his slippery and infectious best. Serious basslines throughout." -- AMG.

RIMBAUD, PENNY Oh Magick Kingdom CD
Originally released in a tiny self-financed run of just 60 CDs in 2011, Cold Spring Records gives Oh Magick Kingdom, the impossible-to-find release by Penny Rimbaud (Crass), the wider attention it deserves. 27 minutes of dark jazz, industrial, bursts of repetitive noise rock and foreboding classical cello, with the initial music laid down by New York duo Japanther, and organically interwoven with the punk poetry of Penny and other Shakespearean "voices". The lyrical subject centers on broken relationships and the conflicts which can exist between love and desire. All elements were recorded at the legendary Dial House in Essex. Comes in a digisleeve.

COIL + ZOS KIA + MARC ALMOND How To Destroy Angels CD
Cold Spring Records present the complete recording of A Slow Fade To Total Transparency. Recorded on August 24th, 1983 at the Air Gallery in London, UK. Personnel for the performance: John Balance (Coil), John Gosling (Zos Kia), Marc Almond (Soft Cell), and live mix by Peter Christopherson (Coil, Throbbing Gristle). Features: "How To Destroy Angels", the complete 23-minute piece; "How To Destroy Angels (Zos Kia Remix)", a nine-minute, unheard remix by John Gosling; and "Baptism Of Fire", an unreleased recording of Zos Kia/Coil at Recession Studios, London, England on October 12, 1983. Liner notes by Michel Faber (Under The Skin (2000), The Crimson Petal And The White). All audio, previously unreleased, has been remastered from the original tapes and is exclusive to this release.Michel Faber: "Imagine how out-of-step with the dominant culture Coil were when they unveiled themselves in the Air Gallery to perform A Slow Fade To Total Transparency. Subtitled: How To Destroy Angels, the music -- a backing track prepared by John Balance, John Gosling and Peter Christopherson -- bears only scant resemblance to the How To Destroy Angels 12" that Coil would release as their debut vinyl the following year. Instead of the meditative ritual gongs of the 12", what we hear here is a restless, queasy melange of industrial noise, its eerie whistles the perfect backdrop for Marc Almond as he recites a bitter tirade against an ex-lover."

VA Amarcord Nino Rota CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Amarcord Nino Rota, a tribute album assembled by producer Hal Willner, originally released by Hannibal Records in 1981. If you think you know how to put a mix-tape together, take a lesson from Hal Willner, the absolute master. In 1981, Willner produced a landmark record of interpretations of music written by Nino Rota for the films of Federico Fellini. With ten tracks and as many different lineups, this record set the template for a series of brilliant tributes that Willner has made over the ensuing 35 years, covering the songbooks of Monk, Mingus, Weill, and Disney, with a mind-expanding range of performers from Eugene Chadbourne to Chuck D to Diamanda Galas to Peter Frampton. On Amarcord Nino Rota, Willner drew together an equally dazzling spectrum of musicians, compiling them into a perfect program that explores Rota's wonderful, sly, sexy oeuvre from contrasting and complementary perspectives. Pianist Jaki Byard sets the stage with the title track and ends things with "La Strada", and in his first appearance on record, guitarist Bill Frisell contributes a haunting solo acoustic version of "Juliet Of The Spirits". Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, who lived in Rome early in his international years, offers a take on Rota's "Roma" and vibraphonist Dave Samuels provides interludes and transitions in a couple of spots. On the other end of the size bracket, Muhal Richard Abrams arranges and conducts his band as part of "La Dolce Vita Suite", which ends with a rock group featuring Debbie Harry singing a wordless waltz. The Carla Bley Band presents a daunting, suitably hilarious version of "8 ½", with Gary Windo's ballistic tenor saxophone, a David Amram Quintet with Sharon Freeman on French horn plays "Satyricon", and in a surprise appearance, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis plays alongside his brother Branford, tenor saxophonist George Adams, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Wilbert Fletcher, in William Fischer's arrangement of a medley of Rota chestnuts. Long out-of-print on LP and only released on CD for a hot minute in the early nineties, Amarcord Nino Rota is a certifiable classic.

CIPRIANI, STELVIO Rage Fuoco Incrociato CD
Digitmovies present the first CD issue of Stelvio Cipriani's complete original soundtrack for the 1984 film Rage Fuoco Incrociato ("A Man Called Rage"), aka Fuego Cruzado. In 1984 Cinevox Records released this orchestral/electronic score on LP with only twelve tracks. In addition to the stereo master tape assembled for the original album, Digitmovies discovered almost 13 minutes of previously unreleased material in mono that bringing the CD's total time over 45 minutes. For the composer, this soundtrack marks a very important moment in the lives of cinema and soundtracks fans: an unforgettable first encounter with maestro Cipriani which took place in the summer of 1984 (thanks to composer and friend Marco Werba) just as he was recording and mixing music for this film. Stelvio Cipriani composed a score where the orchestra performs an epic main theme with a holy atmosphere and frequent pop rhythms which accompany Rage's heroic endeavors through a place where fiendish traps and deadly dangers are always lurking. The author alternates solemn pieces with suspenseful pieces, and pieces of pure action typical of the '80s. One remarkable finding was the long version of "Esplorazione Della Base" ("Exploration Of The Base") with well over seven-and-a-half minutes two-and-a-half minutes on the LP take. This CD will be added to the discography of the legendary Stelvio Cipriani (which has expanded in recent years thanks to fantastic discoveries and rediscoveries in various archives), one of the most prolific composers of film music from the '60s to today.

PICCIONI, PIERO Sono Un Fenomeno Paranormale 2CD
Digitmovies release for the first time a double-CD with Piero Piccioni's original soundtrack for the 1985 comedy film Sono Un Fenomeno Paranormale ("Babasciò", or "I'm an ESP"). Piero Piccioni composed one of his most brilliant soundtracks for this film. He uses sentimental and elegant themes to accompany the protagonist on his journey from Italy to India, including numerous pieces using sitar and tablas. On this soundtrack, Edda Dell'Orso with her crystal voice is the exceptional guest star we can hear on numerous tracks. Originally, General Music had released an LP containing sixteen tracks in stereo. For this double album (totaling over two hours) Digitmovies have included over an hour and a half of new material with film versions and alternate takes which we discovered in addition to the original master which had been assembled for the album. This album proves the artistic greatness of Piero Piccioni once again, not only for the huge amount of material recorded (most of which was not used in the film), but also the high quality of the scores, which are reprised in different versions and with different instruments. Edition of 300.

PEGURI, GINO Il Corsaro Nero CD
Digitmovies present Gino Peguri's original soundtrack for the 1971 film Il Corsaro Nero ("Blackie the Pirate"). Blackie the Pirate is a fictional character created by the Italian writer Emilio Salgari. The character has appeared in various films throughout the years. The composer Gino Peguri -- author of soundtracks for movies like Bloody Pit of Horror (1965), Seven Magnificent Pistols, A Woman on Fire, Psychopath (1968), Code Name, Red Roses (1968) -- wrote an orchestral score for Blackie the Pirate which was released in 1971 on a rare LP from RCA and a rare single Cormorano. For the CD reissue, Digitmovies found the stereo master tapes from the original album and the complete master tapes from the original recording sessions which include both stereo and mono mixes. In addition to the 12 stereo tracks on the album, the label has added nine alternate tracks in stereo and five alternate tracks in mono. This original soundtrack is dominated by the fun pop-sounding song in the opening credits called "Orza Qui Poggia Lì", performed by Paolo Ferrara and accompanied by the chorus of Nora Orlandi.

Digitmovies present Riz Ortolani's complete original soundtrack for the 1972 spaghetti western Una Ragione Per Vivere E Una Per Morire ("A Reason to Live, A Reason to Die"). Riz Ortolani composed one of his best scores during his long career with this one, an epic symphonic score where a heroic main theme played by horns and orchestra follows the group of courageous men to their deaths. At the time this original soundtrack was recorded no LP or EP singles were released, but one melody was included as the first track on the B side of a rare Japanese album on the soundtrack for the 1973 movie The Amazones (aka "Le Guerriere Dal Seno Nudo"). DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO Orzowei Il Figlio Della Savana CD
Digitmovies present the complete edition of the original soundtrack for the Italian cult TV series Orzowei composed by the prolific brothers Guido and Maurizio De Angelis for the first time in full stereo. Based on the novel Orzowei written by Alberto Manzi and issued in 1955, the story was adapted into 13 episodes of an international TV hit series which was produced in 1976 by Italian and German companies. It was directed by the French filmmaker Yves Allégret and starred Peter Marshall as Isa Orzowei, the British star Stanley Baker, Doris Kunstmann, Vincenzo Crocitti, and Bonne Lubega. This TV program was broadcasted in Italy in early 1977 and presented again with version especially re-edited for cinema theaters called Orzowei - Il Figlio Della Savana ("Orzowei - Son of the Savannah"). Isa, a white child abandoned in the forest of South Africa, is found and raised like a son by an old great warrior and by an old woman, both of them belonging to the Swazi people, an ethnic grouping of the Bantu tribe. Only one single was issued: RCA BB 6054, a very big international record hit. Taken from the stereo master tapes which have been well preserved in the RCA archives. Concerning Orzowei besides the 45 rpm single versions "Orzowei" and "Le Notti Di Orzowei", there are also alternate takes of the famous theme song like a different mix, the instrumental version, an evocative version with an echoed solo flute, the very cool karaoke version, an alternate take of "Le Notti Di Orzowei" without flute (all the original material discovered on the master tapes). Digitmovies discovered on another master tape three extra alternate takes. An OST of the '70s Italian TV cult.

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO La Tigre E Ancora Viva: Sandokan Alla Riscossa! CD
Digitmovies present the Guido and Maurizio De Angelis's original motion picture soundtrack for the movie La Tigre È Ancora Viva: Sandokan Alla Riscossa! ("The Tiger Is Still Alive: Sandokan To The Rescue"). At the time of release, a 45rpm single was issued (RCA BB 6135) featuring two tracks, for this LP Digitmovies have used the stereo master tapes found in the RCA vaults. After a slow and solemn strings introduction of the "Sandokan Theme", the new main theme is presented, for big orchestra and of epic flavor, called "Ritorno A Mompracem". This theme is reprised with several variations: with mandola and strings, slow and mystic, with flute, mandola, and bells, and in vocal version. The score is also enriched with very rhythmic action music, and of ethnic flavor. The Sandokan theme is reprised with an atonal way with reverberated harps. Although a digital restoration occurred some audio anomalies (pre-existing on the original sources) remain. Mompracem villagers are scared and left hungry by the ferocious Sultan Abdullah, a sovereign cowardly and cruel, serving the British. Jamilah, a young woman, returns to Mompracem to call the old "tigers" to battle, but is hunted by the sultan's guards and is about to be killed, but she was saved by the Greek adventurer Teotokris. The latter decides to help her, making a long journey to India in search of Sandokan, taking shelter there to convince him to resume his fight against the British.

ABENI, MAURIZIO Rabbia Furiosa CD
Digitmovies present the original motion picture soundtrack by Maurizio Abeni for the movie, directed by Sergio Stivaletti, Rabbia Furiosa, on CD. Fabio has just served eight months in prison for a crime he did not commit, in place of Claudio, a friend of his; former boxer, a delinquent of small caliber that aspires to become the boss of the Mandrione (peripheral roman district). Claudio manages various trafficking trades and also runs dog fights. Whenever his dogs are injured, he turns to his friend Fabio who, clandestinely in the back room of his dog wash, takes care of small surgical procedures and medications. The friendship between Fabio and Claudio is very ambiguous, almost sick. Claudio has a bipolar personality that sometimes leads him to act with extreme malice in comparison to Fabio that seems to suffer without reacting. All of this lasts a long time, until one day that Fabio, unable to bear it anymore, will decide to carry out his terrible revenge...

CIPRIANI, STELVIO Poliziotto Sprint CD
Digitmovies present the first issue of Stelvio Cipriani's complete by original soundtrack for the 1977 film Poliziotto Sprint ("Convoy Busters"). Originally, C.A.M. had released a single with two tracks, "Speed Machine" and "Crazy Town". But thanks to the stereo master tapes from the recording session, Digitmovies had the opportunity to assemble a release with the entire fabulous original soundtrack. Stelvio Cipriani managed to describe the character of Agent Palma perfectly through music. Palma is a true "stuntman" in his fight against crime and Cipriani composed a cheerful score which also gives a sense of urban reality with its tangled jungle full of dangers. The rhythms and the typical sound of the Moog synthesizer of the late seventies create the right atmosphere, which is a pleasure for the listener who dives back in time and can imagine the daring exploits of the protagonist. Cipriani also manages to lighten up the serious battle between the good cop and the criminal with a sweet love theme introduced and then developed throughout the film. The city life with its chaotic traffic and hectic pace are emphasized by a long piece of large wind orchestra jazz and blues called "Crazy Town" (which was on the B side of the single) and is also found in its short version. This original soundtrack is a great addition to the archive devoted to the film music by legendary Stelvio Cipriani.

PERRY & SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM, LEE "SCRATCH" Super Ape Returns To Conquer LP+CD
2018 repress. 41 years later, Lee "Scratch" Perry uses today's sound system to revisit his classic Black Ark album that defined Jamaican dub music, reincarnating the magic for the sound system generation. Big question about it: "How do you improve on a masterpiece?" Lee "Scratch" Perry defined dub music with his seminal 1976 Super Ape album, and he returns with New York City's Subatomic Sound System to conquer again, definitively reincarnating the magic of his Black Ark studio in Jamaica, heavy on Ethiopian horns and percussion, while reinvigorating it with the 21st century booming bass and beats that capture the energy of their innovative live electronic show. Largely known as the mentor to Bob Marley, Perry's influence has transcended reggae. Since 2010, he has toured with NYC's Subatomic Sound System, his go-to band for recreating his Black Ark studio sound live on stage, in new exciting ways as a one-of-a-kind hybrid of beat heavy electronics and live musicians, including original Black Ark studio percussionist Larry McDonald. Subatomic Sound System has been pushing the envelope of electronic music in combination with reggae since their inception in 1999. In dub, Lee "Scratch" Perry is a star at organizing and remixing the music with drum and bass in the forefront and tweaking knobs and faders, adding effects like a jazz improvisation. In the 1970s, the idea of a producer as a star, rather than a singer or musician, seemed crazy, but looking across the world of star DJ producers, he is rightly acknowledged as a visionary as well. There are many stories to be told, but this album follows on the mission of the tour which has the goal of reaching out to old fans and new fans. As sound system culture continues to expand globally with reggae and beyond, these are DJ-friendly heavyweight versions of Scratch material that makes sense in the 21st century. "Scratch" started his music career as a dancer so he loves to get a party started even at 81. The album shows that Scratch was 40 years ahead of his time with Super Ape, and that at 81, he's more relevant to youth culture than ever. The original "Burning Man", "Scratch" was called "the Salvador Dali of music" by Keith Richards and Bounty Killer hailed him as "the greatest Jamaican artist of all time". Features: Jahdan Blakkamoore, Screechy Dan, and Ari Up of The Slits. Includes CD.

RADIUS Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 2/3] CD
Echospace continues their series of Radius's Interpolation Tapes with Restoration 2/3. Hot on the heels of 2018's Obsolete Machines [Stage Two], Radius's cassette demo restoration project returns to form with the Interpolation Tapes series. The original source tapes had aged, warped, and degraded and as a result the present release has preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed with a vintage Prophet 2000 sampler, studio 440 and various Linn samplers to add depth and range to the original source material. Echospace have spent nearly an entire year restoring and interpolating over 100 hours of music, processing sound and redesigning the blueprints of this long-forgotten project. Every track was originally recorded down to an old Tascam 688, an eight-track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and these tracks to our ears still sounds quite impressive, even by modern standards. Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 2/3] is the second part, following Interpolation Tapes [Restoration One] (RDS 002CD, 2017) in a series of three releases featuring unreleased material culled from the vault of the long out of print Radius project, an ageless analog tapestry of sound. This release features eight tracks revisited and restored from analog cassette tapes with recordings conducted from 1994-2001 with nothing but analog/digital hardware. The original source tapes had aged, warped and degraded and as a result Echospace has preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed them into an entirely new sonic spectrum. It's been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and re-arranging these masters. Regardless of the time passed, there's so much depth and organic movement that the music nearly breathes in slow motion. When considering the limitations of hardware in the era these were recorded, they've truly aged like a fine wine.

Restored and redesigned from analog cassette tapes with recordings conducted from 1994-2001 recorded exclusively with analog/digital hardware, the original source tapes had aged, warped and degraded and as a result Echospace has preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed them into an entirely new sonic spectrum. BLEY TRIO, PAUL Closer CD
Restocked. When Oscar Peterson moved from Montreal to New York in 1949, the 17-year-old Paul Bley took over his residency at the Alberta Lounge on Oscar's recommendation; in his twenties, he played with Charlie Parker. Bley started incorporating maverick pianist Lennie Tristano's approach to improvisation and collaborating with Charles Mingus, and in 1958 in Los Angeles Bley famously put together a band with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. His move into free improvisation in the groundbreaking Jimmy Giuffre 3 brought him acclaim. After moving to New York, he was one of the performers at the Cellar Cafe in Bill Dixon's "October Revolution in Jazz" four-day festival, which led to Bley being one of the co-founders shortly thereafter of the Jazz Composers Guild. It was in the midst of that fabled month that Bley recorded his first LP for ESP-Disk' (sixth overall to that point), Barrage. Bley returned to the studio for his second ESP-Disk' LP a bit less than two months later. Closer finds Bley again heavily featuring then-wife Carla's compositions; she's credited on seven of the ten tracks, including two also heard on Barrage, "Batterie" and "And Now the Queen." They sound quite different on this quieter trio date, and the performances are more concise (no track breaks the 3:30 mark). Paul included one of his own tunes, "Figfoot," as well as Ornette Coleman's "Crossroads" and future wife Annette Peacock's "Cartoon." Closer features the distinctive pianism we've come to associate with Bley in one of its earliest recorded manifestations. The other players are fellow Jimmy Giuffre 3 member Steve Swallow and, in his recording debut, Barry Altschul.

DEAD GIRL'S PARTY The Things I've Lost LP
"Recorded in fits and starts, while the artists worked on their moontans amidst strong waters, the sole release by Dead Girl's Party was originally issued on cassette by the Entr'acte label. Since that tape now goes for a ben-and-a-half, we realized it was time to make a vinyl document of these young jazz immortals. Scott 'Pfennig' Foust (XX Committee, IFCO, Tart and the founding philosopher of the Anti-Natural movement) and Matt 'Ha'Penny' Krefting (Son of Earth, Believers, Duck, MK Unit, etc.) decided to do this stuff because they were hanging out a bunch, and 2009 seemed like a 'down' year to them. What better to inflate its core than a totally-inscrutable duo, dedicated to creating noise-pop with no clear precedent? The three tracks on the first side run from the Francis Bebey-like 'The First Pill,' through 'I'm a Tick Tock Bomb' (basically a distillation of every good move the Fall made in the '90s), onto the Apocalypse-as-a-carnival-midway-game of 'Spin the Wheel!' It's what I sort of thought the Sleaford Mods might sound like when I first heard about them (boy, was that a disappointment). Just a weird, sometimes wordy collection of electronics and mood and barely suppressed outrage. The two tracks on the flip are sort of a post-Apocalypse song suite about pirates in a submarine who have to get rid of a lot of ballast, although they know they're gonna die anyway. And wasn't life grand? To which we say, 'yeah!' Impossible to categorize or to get off the stereo, The Things I've Lost is a monster for the ages. Listen in the light. Listen in the dark. Just listen." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 300; Includes download code.

FAUN & A PAN FLUTE 2014-2016 2LP
"Although their name suggests they're Nijinsky-obsessed acid folk wanderers, nothing could be farther from the truth. 2014-2016 is the second album by this Atlanta-based nontet, and it presents a wide swathe of styles and contrasting textures that are wildly eclectic but never very acid-folky. The name stems from the fact that when the band began, some seven years ago, their line-up often changed and they tended to use a different band name every time they played a show. Faun & A Pan Flute somehow got used for a couple of shows and it stuck, not least because it's a fairly ridiculous piece of misdirection. The music on this 2LP set, recorded during the period encapsulated by the album's title, are a wonderful expansion on the music heard on their eponymous debut LP. The sounds are complex and fully composed instrumental pieces that mix elements of jazz, prog and post-rock shimmer with equal assurance. Hard to imagine keeping such a large ensemble together these days, considering the financial privations of the underground, but they manage to pull it off, and even make it seem easy. The music on this album shifts between genres with lazy ease. Some of it sounds like Italian soundtrack action by one of the '60s masters, other parts recall everything from Waka/Jawaka-era Zappa to Steve Reich's late '70s ensembles to the Nels Cline Singers to some of Keith Tippetts' larger bands. Crazy stuff, but all totally great, and all of it eventually sounding like nothing other than Faun and A Pan Flute. If you got ears, you gotta listen." --Byron Coley, 2018

A-SUN AMISSA Ceremony In The Stillness LP
LP version. Includes download code. Silkscreened, hand-numbered sleeves designed at SmilingPaperGhosts. Ceremony In The Stillness is the new album from A-Sun Amissa on Gizeh Records and Consouling Sounds. For their fourth album, A-Sun Amissa plunge deeper than before. Guitars come to the fore, and heavy, distorted chords are present from the off, complemented by desolate ambient passages of sound. The claustrophobic atmospheres remain but combine with a new density and sonic experimentation to present a huge leap forward in structure and composition. Ceremony In The Stillness hints at themes from the previous three outings while pushing the project into new territories. The intricate nuances and lulling melodies from Desperate In Her Heavy Sleep (GZH 037CD, 2012) reappear while the billowing guitars of You Stood Up for Victory, We Stood Up for Less (GZH 044LP, 2013) are referenced throughout. In comparison to The Gatherer (2017), there is a firmer direction here as the album weaves through elements of doom, dark ambient, and post-rock, placing its unique mark firmly into the ears of the listener. A-Sun Amissa is the project of Gizeh founder Richard Knox (The Rustle of the Stars, Shield Patterns, and Glissando). Knox takes a central role here, but we see several collaborators contributing to the record. As album opener "The Black Path" unfurls, the cello of Jo Quail creeps through the thick wall of guitar to offer a moment of calm before the song comes to life with the introduction of drums from Archelon's TJ Fairfax. Alongside a dense and hypnotically repetitive riff, it's A-Sun Amissa's heaviest moment to date as the song collapses under its own weight to leave a crumbling and uneasy passage of cello and guitar drone. Intertwining guitars take center stage on the "With Wearied Eyes" as the atmosphere harks back to the band's earlier work. "The Skulk", meanwhile, evokes The Gatherer as David McLean's saxophone unravels around the ondes Martenot of Christine Ott. The record then takes a turn as "No Perception of Light"'s soporific opening gives way to a mesmerizing beat which develops into a wall of crunching guitars and electronics before "Remembrancer" closes with chiming guitars and bowed strings before evolving into a haunting orchestral outro that concludes the record. It's clear that Knox is comfortable being on the outside looking in, and in expanding A-Sun Amissa's sonic palette, it only adds to the intrigue of what comes next.

YAWNING MAN The Revolt Against Tired Noises CD
The aural experience of Yawning Man summarizes as an intense yet graceful kaleidoscope of polyphonic musical textures; dramatic and flowing, dark, intense and emotional. 2018 finds the band releasing their most musically exciting recording to date with their sixth full-length album, The Revolt Against Tired Noises on the Italian label, Heavy Psych Sounds. The songs on this release are an emotional and visceral expression of pure melodic darkness and beauty. The album was recorded at Gato Trail Studios in Joshua Tree, CA and produced and engineered by friend and long-time collaborator, Mathias Schneeberger (Mark Lanegan, Greg Dulli, SUNN O))), Earth, The Obsessed). The eight songs offered here are the results of a conscious focus on the poetry in melody, finding new sounds and melodic passages that conjure visuals and express emotion and movement. Six of the eight songs are in the instrumental tradition the band is mostly know for; however, two tracks feature the rare appearance of a vocalist (bassist Mario Lalli) alongside Gary Arce's dream-weaving guitar work. One of these tracks of notable mention is the song "Catamaran", a Yawning Man song made popular by the legendary influential desert rock band Kyuss on their 1995 album And the Circus Leaves Town. The song was never released by Yawning Man, however the Kyuss cover of the song proved to be a favorite among Kyuss fans, spreading the word about Yawning Man's unique music. Yawning Man will finally release this classic, properly recorded, for the first time in their 30 years. The Revolt Against Tired Noises is just that, a statement of a unique creative chemistry that's always changing and evolving.

ALLEN, TONY Ole 12"
2018 repress, originally released 2007. After Mark Ernestus' mix of "Moyege" in this series, now his Basic Channel/Rhythm And Sound partner comes to the control tower. Mortiz von Oswald's deep Berlin steppers discloses dubwise traces of our original Lagos recording -- the percussion of Yinka Ogunye, the singing of '50s palmwine legend Rolling Dollar, Oscar Olimbi's guitar lick -- in with his own Oberheim voicings, additional drumming and cool-and-deadly rhythm track. It's a tough, masterly dance record in fine Rhythm And Sound style -- which during its ten-and-a-half minutes seems to ponder time elapsed and journeys undertaken. Like a stepping razor, but t-u-m-p-i-n. This "Reggae Land" version is the take-no-prisoners, pared-down dub of Wareika Hill Sounds ' rootical rework of "Ise Nla." Magnificent trombone and percussion; expert, classical JA mixing. Brings to mind those great dubs of Glen Brown's "Black Man Stand Up Pan Foot."

Wild baglama improvisation and mystical male-unison singing, atop the propulsive mass of a Berlin half-stepper, with turbulent detours into dub, radiophonics, and psychedelia. "Kime Ne" means "so what," "what's it got to do with you." The song adapts verses from the seventeenth-century poet Kul Nesîmî, wistfully invoking the Melami strain of Sufism as a touchstone of humility and tolerance in dark times. "Insanlar" means "humankind"... "The Human Beings." RV's mixes are expert, taut and hard-grooving. "2" is the more agitated and dubwise. Side D is etched with Katharina Immekus's lovely artwork.

VON OSWALD TRIO, MORITZ Horizontal Structures 2LP
2018 repress; Gatefold 2LP version. This is the third album by The Moritz von Oswald Trio, comprised of members Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound), Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric), and Sasu Ripatti (Vladislav Delay, Luomo). This time, the album is enriched and expanded by guitar contributions from Paul St. Hilaire (also known as Tikiman), and double bass courtesy of Marc Muellbauer (via ECM). Horizontal Structures is palpably a more open, more expressive album than the previous studio recording, Vertical Ascent. There is more contrast, more light and shade. St. Hilaire and Muellbauer add fresh drama and swing to the intimate tonal and rhythmic interactions of the core grouping. The coherence of the five-piece is remarkable; the boundary between acoustic and electronic undone. The group's evolution is firmly signaled in the opener, "Structure 1." There's a lush, romantic quality to the playing and arrangement that has not been heard before: the guitar licks have a bluesy lilt, the bass imparts melody as well as physical presence, the synth sequences are more painterly, looser somehow, and Ripatti's percussion roams feelingly. "Structure 2" is like '70s spy-flick jazz or groove-heavy Krautrock stripped to its barest essence, Loderbauer and von Oswald's electronics glistening in a sticky cobweb of reverb and delay. The languidly stepping "Structure 3" faintly recalls von Oswald's work with Mark Ernestus as Rhythm & Sound, with St. Hilaire's chords hanging thick above bone-dry drum machine drift. Lastly, "Structure 4," the track structurally closest to techno, is pervaded by a sense of mischief, with Muellbauer's strings -- plucked, bowed, scraped -- coming to the fore. For all its complexity, this is also a very playful album, and the Trio's increased confidence and empathy as improvisers allow them to indulge flights of percussive fancy, sudden about-turns, and vectors into the unknown. Horizontal Structures sounds, above all else, free.

The Marquis of Hawkes adheres to a specific sound palette whilst still displaying eclecticism across its eight tracks. Opening with the beat-less droning ambience of "Beton Theme", the album takes in a variety of themes from across the house music spectrum, from the deep and dubby meditation of "Instrument Of Thought" to the body-jerking rhythms and retro bass stabs of "Tough Love", the introspective mood of "The Matrix", to the soulful New Jersey styled house grooves with a contemporary twist of "Sunset", building through the optimistic joyousness of "Hope In Our Hearts" before closing with Lidell's heartfelt and passionate emotional overload on "We Should Be Free". First emerging in 2012, after being sought out by Glasgow label Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and having previously been heavily involved with the free festival sound-system culture, the London born artist's iconic sound has taken shape with the influence of music from cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New York alongside the UK's underground house scene. What two great producers other than Lee Perry and Bunny Lee would be best suited for a Dub Soundclash? Both producers were integral at the birth of dub music and would share many rhythms and sessions -- their musical paths would cross all through their careers. It was in fact Bunny Lee's rhythm that provided the back drop to Lee Perry's "Shocks Of Mighty" cut. Jobs were passed from one to the other, Bunny Lee taking over Lee Perry's position at WIRL Records. Yes, two producers whose paths always seemed to cross as it does with this release. Jamaican Recordings have selected some of Lee Perry's rhythms, the first half of this set, against some Bunny Lee rhythm on the second half. You can hear the distinctive sound of Lee Perry's Black Ark studio with his echoplex giving his trademark whirling sound against Bunny Lee's rhythms cut at many different studios. EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Live At Rockpalast CD/DVD
"When the band Einstürzende Neubauten was being founded in 1980 there were hardly any others that could have been compared to them. Instead of playing conventional instruments, the band used tools and other objects of daily use to create atonal industrial collages predicting a near downfall (Kollaps). They started with a destructive and nihilistic basic attitude that corresponded to the zeitgeist of post-punk in the early 80's; however, the realization could not be any more radical than this: percussionist F.M. Einheit maltreating the stage with a power drill, mastermind and singer Blixa Bargeld playing the guitar with an electric shaver. If there existed any parallels, then to 'musique concrete' at best. But very soon, nearly unnoticed by their steadily growing community of fans, the picture refined: at an early stage, Blixa Bargeld rejected already comparisons to the British oil barrel beating epigones of Test Department or SPK and during an interview I had with him in 1985, he wondered why the parallels to a group like Ton Steine Scherben could be neglected carelessly. Indeed, the Neubauten managed to escape pure industrial clichés very fast by their individuality, sophistication and above all, their lyrical substance. Even without blaring metal, on albums like Die Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. and 5 auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala the Neubauten were able to produce gloomy, filgrane and spheric soundscapes ('Armenia', 'Kein Bestandteil sein'). The Rockpalast concert at the Philipshalle in Düsseldorf combines in a unique and compact way all the songs that were relevant and had shaped the band's style (according to the criteria formulated by Bargeld) to this date. The interaction of the line-up which at that time featured Blixa Bargeld, Alexander Hacke, N.U. Unruh, F.M. Einheit and Mark Chung has hardly been captured as perfect and so to the point as in this film document."

TAKADA & LAFAWNDAH, MIDORI Le Renard Bleu LP
Le Renard Bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between Lafawndah and composer Midori Takada, and filmmakers Partel Oliva, takes a cross-generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. As transmitted by Takada, the fox appears in both ancient Senegalese and Japanese folktales as the trickster archetype. Above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature. Renard Bleu marks the first new music released by Takada in nearly twenty years. Her first solo record, 1983's Through The Looking Glass (WRWTFWW 018LP, 019CD/LP), has been rediscovered and heralded as a lost classic; the influence of her percussion trio, the MKWAJU Ensemble, continues to permeate and inspire a new generation. Takada has performed in numerous film score orchestras, including the ensemble for Akira Kurasawa's Dreams (1990), coincidentally a key influence on Renard Bleu. In the ensuing years, Takada has worked closely with theater group the Suzuki Company of Toga on productions of Electra and King Lear, an experience, she says, that allowed her to pursue "a unity of music, body and space." Equally, it is Lafawndah's freedom of tone, decentralized maps of ancient and modern music cultures, and alloying of devotional intensity with modern songcraft casts her as a distinct relative of Midori Takada's. One can trace the influence of artists such as Meredith Monk, Carlos Sara, and Andy Kaufman as much as musical antecedents AR Rahmann, Missy Elliott, or Geinoh Yamashirogumi. It is in a mutual commitment to this unity that Lafawndah, Takada, and Partel Oliva find fertile aesthetic common ground. The music of Renard Bleu originated in Takada's preoccupation with the legend of the fox; after constructing a vivid instrumental composition dramatizing the spirit animal's journeys through waterphone, bells, marimba, and various forms of drums, Lafawndah responded -- in her inimitable mix of fairytale and undertow -- with melodies and lyrics capturing a dialogue between her and the fox himself. Eventually, the duo met in Tokyo for a week of communing with the material at Avaco Creative Studios, where new elements were composed on site. Created in partnership with KENZO and premiered today via their channels, it was Partel Oliva who imagined a contemporary cinematic frame for the myth of the fox to reappear, creating a hybrid of choreography and narrative around Takada and Lafawndah's performance of their joint composition (also titled Le Renard Bleu). 20+ minute project/track.

BROWN, BARRY Vibes Of Barry Brown CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Vibes Of Barry Brown, originally released in 1981. Barry Brown is one of the enigmatic roots reggae vocalists that rose up from the sound system circuit and talent shows of western Kingston, which has always formed the bedrock of Jamaican popular music. Horace Andy was an obvious vocal influence, but Brown's phrasing was distinctly different, his slurring interjections leaning towards the dancehall style of the future. During the late 1970s, tons of material by the singer surfaced from recording sessions for producers such as Bunny Lee, Sugar Minott, Carlton Patterson, and the Hookim Brothers at Channel One, and by 1980, Brown was also issuing finely-crafted self-produced work. Vibes Of Barry Brown, an album of deep roots reggae, surfaced in limited quantity in 1981 via Sonic Sounds' Gorgon imprint, the sub-label reserved for producers that lacked an established label of their own, and although production is not specifically credited, the album is likely self-produced work, since Brown is credited as sole songwriter, just as he was on the self-produced Cool Pon Your Corner LP from 1980. The albums are stylistically similar too, with Brown singing over hard roots rhythms, most likely laid at Channel One with the core of the Roots Radics, and voiced and mixed at King Tubby's.

SCHMIDT, DANIEL In My Arms, Many Flowers LP
2018 repress, originally released in 2016. Recital present the first album of American Gamelan composer Daniel Schmidt (b. 1942). Schmidt, who emerged in the Bay Area music scene in the 1970s, wove the threads of traditional Eastern Gamelan music together with American minimalism (repetitive music). Schmidt was (and is still) a prime figure in the development of American Gamelan music -- studying and collaborating with Lou Harrison, Jody Diamond, and Paul Dresher. He currently is a teacher at Mills College, teaching instrument building. The recordings on Flowers date from 1978-1982, selected directly from Schmidt's personal cassette archive. It holds two studio tracks, along with two live performances. The first track, "Dawn" (commissioned by composer John Adams), employs an early digital sampler provided by Pauline Oliveros. It holds the sound of a string quartet. The nature of this piece is breathtaking, an ocean of strings pulsing beneath the gliding bells of the gamelan -- such a lovely interplay. Furthermore, the title track, "Flowers", features the addition of a rebab, a traditional bowed instrument, which reels through the piece, netted and taught. The final two works are strictly gamelan compositions. "Ghosts" is a dynamic piece; rife with dexterous euphoria, it well displays the skillset of the percussionists heard on the LP. The closing work, "Faint Impressions", is a somber elegy. Demonstrating the fragility and grace possible with the gamelan; sounding almost as an evening piano sonata. In My Arms, Many Flowers is a unique document from an under-represented movement of American new music. An account of the curious beauty and woven emotions hidden within resonating pieces of metal.

Rhythm Section look to Poland once more for two of the most uplifting tracks of the year. Earth Trax (The Phantom, Ptaki) and newcomer Newborn Junior pull two absolute classics out of the bag here that do what they say on the tin. Both "Sax Track" and "Flute Track" center around ecstatic MIDI melodies on (you guessed it) saxophone and flute! Falling somewhere between the late-night deep house excursions of Ron Trent (circa "Morning Factory" era) and more recent retro-leaning breakbeat driven output from the Pender Street Steppers et al, the Sax & Flute EP is a masterclass in sustain-release.

String Theory's Modularity is an exciting fusion of jazz and house, clear from the get-go opener "Dirty High". Next up is "Mr. Tiger", full of jazzy synths that oscillate on either side of steady beats, before eventually giving way to catchy little piano riffs. AG KAEDY, AHMED Orion Congregation CD
Orion Congregation is a live recording that perfectly captures the palpable raw excitement of a particularly memorable evening, the concluding date of a series of packed concerts which took place in various venues around Berlin in June 2017. Led by Ahmed Ag Kaedy's entrancing guitar licks, which seamlessly merge blues and rock with the traditional "Assouf"-style of his homeland, the pace soon quickens as the band pick up the gauntlet. The double-drummer, double-keyboard line-up produces a genuine Sensurround sound, enhanced by depth charge levels of bass action, blasts of saxophone fury, and storm clouds of electronic whooshes, sending the listener on a sonic rollercoaster with the controls set to the furthest constellation, with the volcanic drumming of Mahalmadane Traoré acting as rocket fuel. The audience hollers and whistles that crop up from time to time are an accurate reflection of the electric atmosphere that pervaded at every gig. Ahmed Ag Kaedy, who is featured in the documentary film Mali Blues (2016), founded the band Amanar de Kidal in 2005 (two records on Sahel Sounds) and worked with Fatoumata Diawara and Samba Touré. Kidal is a small town in North-East Mali which despite its size and relative isolation, has been the focal point for uprisings of Kel Tamasheq rebels against the Malian government for several decades. Ahmed Ag Kaedy's conscious lyrics stress the importance of education and development in a country plunged in deep turmoil. When the extremists took over his hometown, the suppression of music was one of the main points in their agenda. After being threatened with having his fingers cut off if he ever dared to play the guitar again, Ahmed Ag Kaedy decided to move to Bamako, where he still lives. Orion Congregation (or in Tamasheq, "Amanar Assafou", as it stands on the cover in the Tifinagh script) features a floating line-up revolving around Ahmed Ag Kaedy and drummer Mahalmadane Traoré from Amanar, and key members of two bands representing two generations and contrasting approaches to trans-continental fusion. Keyboard and duff player Michael Wehmeyer has been a member of the legendary German band Embryo since 1977, and the remaining musicians, saxophonist, flutist, and synthesizer player Johannes Schleiermacher, and keyboard player Jörg Hochapfel (both members of Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra), drummer Bernd Oezsevim (who, along with Schleiermacher, plays in Gunter Hampel's Trio), and bassist Kalle Enkelmann (Julia Kadel Trio). Recorded live at BLO-Ateliers, Berlin, June 28, 2017.

TRADEN (TRAD, GRAS OCH STENAR) Traden 2LP
Double LP version. A brand-new studio album from Träden ("The Trees"), formerly known as Träd, Gräs och Stenar ("Trees Grass and Stones") in different incarnations, but often just called Träden for short. Through long, crescendoing improvisations, Träden has found their own unique path in the music world for decades, creating a music with room for everyone. Many younger musicians and friends of minimalist, experimental music have been inspired and followed, astonished that a bunch of Swedish hippies made the planet's most hypnotic, moss-fragrant psychedelic trance rock. Today, Träden consists of Hanna Östergren (Hills), Sigge Krantz (Archimedes Badkar), Reine Fiske (Dungen, The Amazing), and originator Jakob Sjöholm. Nisse Törnquist (Amason) also plays on three of the songs. In this latest, celebrated edition, the band has played for sold-out houses all over Sweden and other parts of the globe. "When we decided to record and release a new album it's the people who are now in the group that plays on it. We have become a band again in the way that we can once again get out and gig more regularly. The name change is a way of freeing ourselves from the old band and its idiom, thus opening our minds to let the music find new ways, simply giving us more artistic freedom," explains Jakob Sjöholm. The new album was recorded at Träden's countryside music workshop and in good old TGS tradition, much of the material emerged by jamming. Then there are some songs that demanded some toil and despair. It has been a process where everyone in the band has been deeply involved throughout the course of work, in all stages of the production; from the first musical notes to the last choice of colors and images for the album sleeve. The music on the new album makes one to let go and be swept along in a soaring, endearing ecstasy, and be thrown into a wild but safe forest. Even though the band constellation has changed successively, the majestic roar continues. Sometimes the loudness is lifted out to the big, eccentric carpentry and chopped down to a nice "tree porridge". Or on contemplatively growing songs, where the guitars' winding and whirling calls to the very highest air bearings. Many fans describe Träden's rough-cut music in almost spiritual terms. Träden answers with some mighty songs where the band reaches the mind-expanding oscillation that seems to only occur in their music.

WOODWARD AND THE WINTER ORPHANS, DAVEY Davey Woodward And The Winter Orphans CD
Davey Woodward has been a prolific songwriter with his bands The Brilliant Corners and The Experimental Pop Band. An indie pop legend to some, obscure outsider to most. He approaches his fourth decade making alternative music with the same enthusiasm and single mindedness as he did in the first. Having recently finished recording with Karen, Davey had an idea that he wanted to record an album of songs quickly with people he had never worked with before. Davey knew the songs had to sound effortless, in many ways go back to a time when artists like Bowie would go into the studio without finished songs or someone like Dylan would work the song out while the tape was rolling. He did not want the songs to sound labored. The Winter Orphans were born. Julian (guitar) had not been in a studio for over a decade. Steve (drums) was playing in a million other bands but found time. Steve knew Mark who was a guitarist. Davey said well he can play bass and piano then! Davey played them the songs -- the lyrics were unfinished and the chords changed many times over the five rehearsals they had prior to the recording, which took place over a long weekend in July 2017. The band said they liked the songs. They told Davey the songs sounded very personal, were they? They said it reminded them of English folk, Courtney Barnett, the Velvets, The Band and Johnny Cash. With those kinds of references, it's no surprise that this record takes you back to a time when albums were a collection of songs that transported you to another place. Where you would be lost in someone else's world for half an hour. The words and music swirling around in your head for days on end. Feeling a connection with the artist. That's a special moment that is increasingly difficult to capture in the fast-forward world we now live in. A culture where actually listening to an album of songs in one go is a rare thing. So you need to make time, sit down, relax, and listen to this debut album. It won't disappoint. Davey Woodward And The Winter Orphans enjoyed recording this album so much that they plan to record another one.

DOWNPILOT This Is The Sound LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. This Is The Sound starts with no fuss, frills, or preamble. The first line of the opening track, "Your Supply", drops in right in on the first downbeat and ends with a sentiment about as resigned and unapologetic as can be: "This is the sound of everywhere." It dissolves on a wave of swirling feedback and gorgeous kerrangs, and what comes into focus is a kind of manifesto against the smugness that has led to our current state of affairs. This sets the tone for a bold piece of work by a seasoned and accomplished artist. While Paul Hiraga's latest (and sixth) Downpilot album at times may nod to the understated psychedelia of 2015's Radio Ghost (TR 319CD/LP) or the intimate melancholia of 2011's New Great Lakes (TR 221CD/LP), this latest collection is edgier and much more immediate. The second track slams straight into "Historian", a wry commentary on western civilization that harks back to the 19th century through a '70s rocker lens. Probably Downpilot's most varied collection of songs to date, this album reaches one of its peaks with "High And Guided", an unequivocal kiss-off diatribe with forlorn, spaghetti western guitar motifs, restrained vocal wails, and aggravated violin textures, hinting at a barely (but beautifully) concealed rage. There's a lot of raw emotion on this record, but it's presented with such craft and expertise that the effect is quietly transcendent. The intimacy of "Thievers" is signature Downpilot, with understated keyboard lines and eloquent evocations of nature, but it's only on closer inspection that the song reveals itself as a ghostly prayer to Hiraga's mother. Where the album starts on a strident note, it ends on a philosophical one with "Finistère", providing the hope of redemption by leaving everything behind in search of a greater meaning. Over the years, Hiraga has become a highly skilled engineer and has recorded and mixed this album single-handedly, with early support from long time collaborators Terry de Castro (Wedding Present), Mike Musburger (Posies), and original member Jeff Brown. There's just so much to listen to on this record, and whether it's the expertly-woven and unconventional violin contributions of Melinda Rice or Anne Marie Ruljancich's (Walkabouts) duet-style vocals on "At The Window" and "St. Clair", everything has its own, exquisite place.

SPIKE & DEBBIE Always Sunshine, Always Rain CD
From 1980 through 1995, Spike was in several Cardiff combos -- Table Table, The Gist, Bomb And Dagger, and The Pepper Trees -- which shared one thing, the startlingly original singer named Debbie Pritchard. Debbie's oddly innocent vocal style is reminiscent of The Marine Girls (another band with a Young Marble Giants connection!) yet with the feminist impulse of The Raincoats and a rhythmic sensibility rooted in South American and African musical styles. As a body of work, it's gloriously unique, and had they had any budget, promotion and an actual label behind them, well . . . this wouldn't need to be explained to you now, would it? Always Sunshine, Always Rain collects twenty recordings they made in three different bands and during loose recording sessions. Eighteen have never seen meaningful release, and the two that have -- "No Real Place", from a 7" single, and "Strike", from a miner's benefit compilation, likely never found their way past Cardiff city borders. "Seaport Town" was later revisited by Alison Statton and Spike, and "Assured Energy" appeared on The Gist's archival album Holding Pattern (PICI 009CD/LP, 2017) in vastly different form. Always Sunshine, Always Rain is organized in roughly chronological order, with tracks from Table Table, Bomb And Dagger, and The Pepper Trees. Includes a booklet of lyrics and a timeline of Spike and Debbie's musical activities. Edition of 500.

TANO TRIO FEAT. LEO GENOVESE Close but Far CD
Via Veneto Jazz presents Close but Far by the Tano Trio featuring Leo Genovese. How do traditions travel among space and time? What defines the collective consciousness of a culture? How do elements that are so far away in reality, become so close in different dimensions? This record is the product of the union of a shared language that exists in two cultures that are geographically far away from each other and living under different contexts, but at the same they are so close. Daniele Germani (saxophone) and Stefano Battaglia (bass) are two musicians from Italy, joined by Leo Genovese (piano) and Juan Chiavassa (drums) from Argentina. Leo and Juan come from Italian families in Argentina. One could argue that Argentina's mother country is Spain, but the culture there is very much influenced by the Italian immigration movements of the past two centuries. So when the two Italians and the two Argentines met in New York, they found out that they actually shared a language beyond both the spoken word and music; they felt like brothers. Close but Far is a story about immigration, about the people who take the chance and leave things behind only to become nomads in search of new experiences and new sounds. These four musicians, who come from similar backgrounds in different parts of the world, gathered in New York City to record this album, and the chemistry among all the elements that come into play make this a unique musical experience. Personnel: Leo Genovese - piano; Daniele Germani - alto saxophone; Stefano Battaglia - bass; Juan Chiavassa - drums.

Schicksal is the alias of Rudi Huybrechts, one of Belgium's most adventurous electro and body beat artists, active since the '80s. 365 Days compiles his best work since 1982 until now. 36 years of experiment, changing gear from analog to digital and back, without ever changing his Leitmotiv: creating the perfect sounding body beat. After a few tracks were released on the famous Underground Wave compilation albums on Walhalla Records, now finally a full album by this fascinating artist, a mix of early and more recent work. An album worth discovering.

ROSS, LESLIE Drop By Drop, Suddenly 2CD
XI Records releases Drop By Drop, Suddenly, a two-CD set of eleven compositions for bassoon composed and performed by Leslie Ross. Ross is not only an internationally renowned instrument builder but is also an uncompromising creative musician. The first disc starts with a series of short seed pieces that play primarily with the timbral and microtonal differences highlighted between tone-holes, forming a layered effect while playing with only one fingering, single note or multiphonic. They range from the strictly tonal or modal pitch-centered to a thicker atonal and dissonant collection of frequencies. Pieces progress to longer complex ones by the second disc, some of which have as minimal material as the shorter ones, but make more extensive use of live multi-track recordings and frequency filters to further bring out changes in frequencies or accentuate specific multiphonics. The electronics used were created explicitly for each composition using the computer-based program MAX/MSP. Save for the unconventional 15 microphones of the "prepared bassoon", these recordings include pieces with no sound processing whatsoever, as well as pieces that do involve sound processing and multi-tracking. Importantly, however, any processing is made in real time, not post-recording. All recordings are single-take recordings where four speaker channels along with room microphones have been mixed down to stereo. Key clicks occasionally get picked up in a loop recording to return sometimes processed, sometimes not, while in circular breathing a multiphonic might drop out before sounding again. What might sound like clicks or occasional drop outs on some pieces are not overlooked mastering faults but the result of this live processing, presenting these pieces as they would be in performance. With a formal background in classical music and early performance practice, Leslie Ross took a plunge into the free improvisation scene of downtown New York in the mid 1980's and has immersed herself in experimental music ever since. Her connected, parallel, work as a baroque bassoon builder also opened up concurrently into explorations of invented instruments and sound installations. She has presented solo programs, both acoustic and electro-acoustic throughout Europe and the US over the past three decades. In the mid 2000's she returned her music focus to a detailed exploration, analysis and understanding of bassoon multiphonics. It is through this exploration of multiphonics and the subtle changes made when playing with resonance keys that brought her to the music presented on Drop By Drop, Suddenly.
