MINDS&MACHINES Silenced / Nothing 12"
Hailing from Germany as two definitive individuals -- minds&machines exemplify the hybrid human/electronic chorale. "The rules are, there are no rules" -- a perfect embodiment of the minds&machines ethos and that of the new generation of electronic music producers. Primarily drawing on influences of garage, electronica, and restless ambient, the German duo's music encapsulates that moment of human loneliness but gratitude at 3am on a wet, urban street. Silenced / Nothing, has hints of garage, electronica, and ambient, all very much remaining on a divergent route.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Methodrone 2LP
2019 repress. Released on 180 gram black vinyl. Deluxe gatefold with printed inner sleeves. 2007 release -- originally released in 1995. Redolent with the spirit of such high priests of effects and delay as Loop, Spaceman 3, and My Bloody Valentine, not to mention a fair dollop of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Methodrone clearly is the sum of its influences. Thankfully, BJM does a very solid job with them throughout the album's course of over 70 minutes.

CLAIM, THE Boomy Tella CD
A Turntable Friend Records present a re-mastered re-release of the second classic album by The Claim, Boomy Tella, originally released on Kevin Pearce's legendary Esurient Communications in 1988. The Claim from Cliffe, Kent were one of the key players in the then thriving "Medway Scene" alongside The Prisoners, Billy Childish, and The Dentists. This second album received glowing reviews at the time including Bob Stanley's 8/10 review in the NME alongside numerous plays by John Peel. If you want to hear where early Blur got their sound from, look no further. The Claim's guitarist David Arnold also played on early Jasmine Minks releases. Liner notes by David Arnold. Remastered using the original ¼-inch tapes. CD version comes in a six-panel package and features four unreleased demo tracks from 1988/1990.

MATTIMATTI Tomrum CD
Mattimatti is two Mattis living in different countries -- Sweden (Malmö) and Germany (Berlin). They travel around the world playing music whilst asking themselves, "who are we?". The answer seems to change just as their surroundings do, but the music stays with them and so does their friendship. It is cliché that it's hard to put a label on music; to say it has almost become a cliché itself. But the whole meaning of music is to listen to it and create one's own world. To create one's own world one needs space, space that is not interrupted by either style or defining categories. Mattimatti is an attempt to step into that space, creating music built solely on improvisation. Tomrum is an invitation to places not yet known, where rhythmic, suggestive and meditative soundscapes meet the present moment. As friends and musicians Mattimatti welcome the unexpected, living in a world full of confusion when it comes to identity. They are trying to stay connected; it is a constant task. They met on the streets of Berlin in spring 2013 while playing on the streets. After they played for the first time together, there was no question that they could travel a musical journey together from that day. Mattimatti was initiated; on their quest they began playing improvised tunes on sitar and hanging on the street while traveling through Sweden and Germany. This lead them to be invited to numerous festivals all over Europe while constantly developing their music and sound. Since then their set has added new instruments such as a drum kit, African harps, sitar, guitar, harmonica, clarinet, and vocals, extending the sound with a space echo. The long, intimate tunes that created here have an original structure and sound. There is a certain present resting in the music which is hard to describe but easy to experience. Their live concerts have been dubbed mythical, hypnotic, magic and epic -- traveling is the biggest influence on their music. Mattimatti are now both based in Berlin and Malmo and work together with the contemporary circus, dance, and music group Kollektiv Knaster.

VA Malam Minggu: A Saturday Night in Sunda LP
Akuphone resumes its reissue operations with its latest compilation, Malam Minggu: A Saturday Night In Sunda. This release brings us once again to Southeast Asia, with a stopover in the Indonesian archipelago -- to the region of Sunda in western Java. As its name suggests, this collection immerses us in the vibes of Sundanese nights at the turn of the 1980s. During the post-independence climate of the 1960s, Presidents Sukarno and Suharto encouraged artists to renew and innovate traditional Indonesian art forms in an attempt to limit and control the spread of Western music -- which was banned from broadcasting in 1961. This policy saw a revival of traditional musical styles like gamelan degung, and the emergence of Indonesian singing genres: jaipong and pop sunda. Recorded between 1978 and 1985, this unique and surprising selection presents some of the most popular artists of the time, such as Nano S. and Tati Saleh. It is richly documented by Southeast Asian music specialist Edouard Degay Delpeuch. Also features: Group Gentra Madya, Tati Saleh & Marriza Group, and Mang Memed Group.

TAMAYUGE Baba Yaga LP
After Ko Shin Moon, The Dwarfs Of East Agouza, and Praed, Akuphone continues its sonic exploration of freaky electronic music with Tamayuge. A blend of experimental music, creepiness, melancholia, and kitschy tones, this surprising collaboration releases its first album, Baba Yaga. At the head of the group are Maya Kuroki and Tamara Filyavich, a Japanese and a Ukrainian now based in Montreal. Kuroki's phantasmagoric vocals and dreamy guitar added to Filyavich's team of electronic ghosts fresh out of her nightmares is an invitation to a strange ritual, between tormented performance and feminist ceremony. Like Baba Yaga, an ambivalent character of Slavic mythology, this music is both part of Japanese and Ukrainian cultures, bringing scary and exciting shivers to an enigmatic imagination. The mysterious and unsettling Tamayuge's universe is somewhere between Phew, Laurie Anderson, and The Residents.

ODD NOSDAM Mirrors LP
Acclaimed abstract hip-hop producer and cofounder of Anticon Records, Odd Nosdam, presets Mirrors, a new LP via Alien Transistor. Composed entirely of found sounds, most of them sourced from rare and private press vinyl, Mirrors' instrumental beats and sound collages pulse with a sense of exploration and rediscovery that has been Nosdam's calling card since the turn of this past century. Its every track presents a treasure trove of unique aural gems, each nestled in atmospheric textures that swirl like a cloud of dust just blown off of some once-overlooked heirloom. Designed specifically for vinyl, the record's A and B sides play out like a pair of cohesive psychedelic dreams. Yet even a skilled psychoanalyst would struggle to categorize these reveries as either pure seraphic bliss or full-on nightmare. By sneaking strategic bursts of beauty into Mirrors' more sinister beats ("Mirrors I") and by lacing its largely angelic compositions with foreboding tones ("The Burn"), Odd Nosdam has crafted a record that is not only engrossingly nuanced, but that captures a highly specified, often hypnogogic, mental state with breathtaking accuracy: cognitive dissonance. The sensation of experiencing an emotion that runs in direct opposition to one's circumstantial narrative -- a sense of melancholy when things are ostensibly fine, a smile as the world seems to crumble -- may once have been predominately the stuff of dreams. But in our current age of ebullient social media facades, and at a sociopolitical moment when joy feels like an aberrant blip in an up-scrolling sea of horror, Mirrors provides an unsettlingly apt soundtrack to the waking experience of the modern era. Oneiric interpretations aside, at its core Mirrors is simply a stunning and dynamic beat tape. As he has for two decades -- whether in crafting instrumentals for avant-rap legends cLOUDDEAD and art-rapper Serengeti, sound tracking skate videos for Element Skateboards, or adding to his prolific catalog of solo recordings -- Odd Nosdam uses his special knack for marrying monolithic, lumbering drum arrangements with novel melodic flourishes to create a breed of experimental hip-hop music entirely his own. An evocative record that seamlessly blends transcendence with menace, Mirrors is a captivating addition to the producer's body of work and one that will continue to leave listeners awed by his creativity, versatility, and his singular vision. ALIS Papercuts LP
Alis has spent over a decade exploring the intricacies of performance-oriented club music, releasing on labels like Don't Be Afraid and Planet Mu, and becoming a staple in the Berlin and London scenes. Papercuts is her Astral Plane Recordings debut, comprised of five lush, intimate tracks that are both entirely removed from a dance floor context, yet deeply preoccupied with groove and movement. Honed at her Sunday System nights at London's Rye Wax, Alis' interdisciplinary practice comes to the fore on Papercuts with vocals extending far beyond their linguistical potential into a broader, more textural realm. Songs like "Status" and "BCC: me" walk the line of sonority and dissonance, nearing the precipice of abstraction without falling into the abyss. "Papercuts" and "Water" on the other hand offer a more concise narrative vision, proffering a version of hook writing that fluctuates between meditative and commanding.

KAZIMIRA & DAGMAR GERTOT, DARJA Death Of The Bull CD
Aurora Borealis present Death Of The Bull by Darja Kazimira and Dagmar Gertot. Over the years, Aurora Borealis have released some truly strange and genre-defying albums. Death Of The Bull is undoubtedly their most unusual, complex, and challenging release to date. Taking pagan fertility rites as a starting point, Darja Kazimira and Dagmar Gertot have constructed a narrative that witnesses the collapse of the natural order and the end of an age. The breadth and scope of the work is mind-blowing and the results are quite unlike anything you're like to have heard before. Darja Kazimira (Latvia) and Dagmar Gertot (Russia) are engaged in experimental art practices based on the research of various funeral and initiation rituals of the peoples of the world, with emphasis on the territory of the Balkans and ancient Greece. With a solid foundation of musical and classical archaeology, religious studies, mythology, philosophy, and thanatology, they have sought to create an entirely new ritualized imaginal space. Through improvisation and glossolalia, a new mythic realm is born. They explain: "For us, music is an opportunity to articulate a myth, to make tangible imaginary space, to deform the environment through sound, shifting its stable temporal and local criteria." With a mix of various ethnic vocal traditions, extreme and academic vocal practices, and a radical approach to traditional notions of folk music in its truest sense, Death Of The Bull is undoubtedly highly demanding of the listener. While many albums can be termed immersive, the mythic-space and otherworldliness of Death Of The Bull holds the listener to it's rough hide and drags them into the underworld. Six-panel CD digifile.

London's Crows are the latest signing to Balley Records (IDLES, Heavy Lungs, Lice) and deliver their long-awaited debut album, Silver Tongues. The album's thrilling first single "Chain Of Being", was recently Lamacq's Livener on 6 Music, and is a real statement: a widescreen slice of post-punk that combines heaviness and brooding melody in equal measures. Joe Talbot said the following of his decision to sign Crows to his Balley Records label: "I saw them play at the Louisiana in Bristol a few years ago and both the performance and the quality of their songs blew me away. Everything about them excites me; when I heard they were looking to release an album, I had no choice but to chase them. It's a dream to work with them."

OSSIA Devil's Dance 2LP
Heavy-weather, beyond-good-and-evil sound system poetics, channeling raw and rootical techno, isolationist abstraction, and dub at its most turbulent and raw-nerved and space-time-warping. New worlds ahead... Equal parts tuff, tail-thrashing dancehall pressure -- see "Hell Dub" -- and art-of-darkness ambience and introspection, culminating in the slow-burning, third-eye-opening 23-minute dream weapon, "Vertigo". Part of the Young Echo crew, Ossia embodies the best tradition of Bristol underground music in that he doesn't pay much mind to tradition, just does his own thing. Yes, Devil's Dance shares DNA with those sullen masterpieces that will always be associated with the city, from blunted '90s street-soul/hip-hop to sub-loaded dubstep -- but like his forebears Ossia is ultimately a mongrel breed, drawing from his own, very contemporary and idiosyncratic well of influences: grime, jazz, steppers, dub, post-punk, and industrial abrasion, concrète minimalism... Devil's Dance could easily be not just a forbidding, but a suffocating proposition. But even at its most angst-ridden it feels lithe and aerodynamic, its darker impulses both intensified, and offset, by a pure soundboy's delight in detail and color and higher dancefloor mechanics. The music pulses with energy, a fever to communicate... and Raki Singh (violin), Jasmine (vocals), and Ollie Moore (saxophone) add vivid flesh-tone to the punishing, plasmic electronics. The record was mixed at an infamous, subterranean Bristolian recording studio, using an arsenal of spring and plate reverbs, modded pedals, tape-delays, and compressors: systems of black magic crucial to the album's intense presence and physicality and carefully modulated dread. In the end, what you're witnessing, and experiencing vicariously, is a purging, an exorcism: find the devil, dance with the devil... and then chase, chase, chase him out of the earth.

AMACHER, MARYANNE Petra CD
Maryanne Amacher (1938-2009) was a composer of large-scale fixed-duration sound installations and a highly original thinker in the areas of perception, sound spatialization, creative intelligence, and aural architecture. She is frequently cited as a pioneer of what has come to be called "sound art", although her thought and creative practice consistently challenge key assumptions about the capacities and limitations of the genre. Amacher's work anticipates some of the most important developments in network culture, media arts, acoustic ecology, and sound studies, yet due to its expansive interdisciplinary nature, it has rarely been documented. Following two CDs for Tzadik and her inclusion in the monumental collection OHM: The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music (1948-1980), this publication of Amacher's 1991 piece Petra marks her first commercially available instrumental work. Petra was originally commissioned for the ICSM World Music Days in Boswil, Switzerland. Written for two pianos, the piece is a unique example of Amacher's late work, a direct extension of her working methodologies for electronic composition taken into an acoustic realm that alludes to the music of Giacinto Scelsi and Galina Ustvolskaya. Petra is a sweeping, durational work based on both Amacher's impressions of the church at Boswil and science-fiction writer Greg Bear's short story of the same name, in which gargoyles come to life and breed with humans in a post-apocalyptic Notre Dame. This solemn interpretation of Petra was recorded at its 2017 American premiere at New York's St. Peter's Episcopal Church with pianists Marianne Schroeder, who originally performed the piece alongside Amacher in 1991, and Stefan Tcherepnin, who performed it alongside Schroeder in 2012 at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. Weighing tranquilizing passages of glacially-paced serenity against stretches of dilapidated, jagged dissonance, the recording illuminates a crucial node in the constellation of Amacher's enigmatic oeuvre. Artistic director of the Giacinto Scelsi Festival in Basel, Marianne Schroeder is a Swiss composer and pianist specializing in the interpretation of New Music. She has collaborated with and premiered work by John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Dieter Schnebel, Anthony Braxton, Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros and Giacinto Scelsi, with whom she studied. She is currently a professor at Hochschule der Künste Bern. Stefan Tcherepnin is an American electronic music performer, contemporary artist, and composer in fourth generation, continuing the family heritage of his great-grandfather Nicholas, grandfather Alexander, and father Ivan Tcherepnin.

ENSEMBLE KLEM/JAIME OLIVER LA ROSA Anexo3 LP
Buh Records presents Anexo3, the debut album by Jaime Oliver La Rosa (Peru) and Ensemble KLEM (Spain). Anexo3 was composed in 2017-2018 over residencies in Bilbao, Lima, and Santiago de Chile, through elaborated processes of sound design, experimentation, improvisation, recording, and reflection. Often processed beyond recognition, violin, flutes, and saxophones along güiros, motors, and an aluminum plates system, struck and induced into resonance through feedback processes controlled by microphones, transducers, and computer software and joined by Oliver's MANO computer-based instrument. The sonic world of Anexo3 ranges from metallic sonorities of the instruments and the industrialized cities we work in, the feedback systems we inhabit, and soundscapes of imaginary nature. A forty-minute structured improvisation, Anexo3 is partially notated with traditional music notation, graphic notation, text indications, and inscriptions on the instruments themselves. The work is also heavily encoded in a software that shapes the ensemble's sound and the set of actions the musicians must make to control the temporal evolution of the piece. Jaime Oliver is one of the most important creators of instruments for electroacoustic music performances, and has received several international awards.

CHOCOLATE Peru's Master Percussionist LP
Julio "Chocolate" Algendones is one of the essential percussionists in the great tradition of Afro-Peruvian music. Peru's Master Percussionist collects recordings made in 1990 in Las Vegas, during a trip that the artist made as a member of Peruvian jazz group Perujazz. The album was produced by the Englishman J. Blue Sheppard and released in 1991 by the New York-based label Lyrichord. It also includes a track originally recorded and published in Lima, in 1984. This reissue on Buh Records presents the material in remastered form and, for the first time ever, in a vinyl edition. Peru's Master Percussionist combines festejo rhythms, of Afro-Peruvian origin, with the polyrhythms of the Santeria rituals of Haiti and Cuba. Using congas, kalimbas, seeds, and cajon, Chocolate embarks on a journey towards the original Yoruba sounds, of African roots. The cajon (a percussion instrument representative of Afro-Peruvian culture) is incorporated into the hypnotic, trance-inducing rhythmic repetitions that Chocolate generates. In the end, Perujazz makes an appearance with a discharge of avant-garde jazz, in a culminating moment, to close a creative and exceptional circle, which at the same time is the perfect summary of a career that led Chocolate to move in the heart of Afro-Peruvian culture and on the edges of the avant-garde jazz. This album is a masterpiece that presents Chocolate in the fullness of his virtues as a master percussionist, as a musician who transcended all classification, who inspired many and whose creative impulse has found its place in an area where Afro-Peruvian culture, Santeria, and the avant-garde converge. Peru's Master Percussionist inaugurates the series of Perspectives on Afro-Peruvian Music. The Collection which will reveal some of the best-kept secrets of black rhythms of Peru. VA Grabar Y Coagular: A History of Audio Pieces by Peruvian Artists (1972-2018) LP
Buh Records present Grabar Y Coagular: A History Of Audio Pieces By Peruvian Artists (1972-2018), the first collection that explores the relationship between recording art and conceptual pieces. With a range that goes from experimentation in sound poetry to radio art, eccentric compositions that evoke the Fluxus's spirit, appropriationism, and more. In Peru, the visual arts and sound creation have, in the last years, taken a common path: visual artists have begun to produce sound creations, experimental musicians have begun to move into the visual arts circuit... A sound art movement has turned visual and audible. Grabar Y Coagular brings together for the first time the pioneering works of Jorge Eduardo Eielson (audio-paintings) and Francisco Mariotti (computer poetry), as well as works by Luz María Bedoya, Elena Tejada-Herrera, José Luis Martinat, Eliana Otta, Paola Torres Núñez Del Prado, Maya Watanabe, Alberto Casari (and PPPP), Daniel Jacoby, Gilda Mantilla Y Raimond Chaves, Los Parafusos, Nicolas Lamas, and Juan Diego Tobalina. Grabar Y Coagular ("Record and Coagulate"), curated by Luis Alvarado, is a much awaited and needed release, a collection of audio pieces produced by Peruvian artists which defines a scope of creation where sound is the matter and form in which information becomes present.

TELLAVISION Add Land CD
" 'You can't walk on water/ but you can swim in it/ the coast is clear/ add land from here': A slow, slightly erratic pulse ripples underneath Tellavision's voice as she sings -- evoking the fears which paralyze us, the fears which inspire us. Magnetic fields crackle over a sharply contoured yet dimly lit beat on Add Land, the new Tellavision album. It doesn't take much for her voice to shine . . . Add Land, the fourth Tellavision album, is a rigorous exercise in musical reduction, reaching new levels of intricacy and virtuosity which prove to be warmer and more touching than ever. For a decade, Tellavision has been one of our most exciting sonic inventors, carving out her own inimitable style through her previous three albums, two EPs, and countless tracks. New music abstractions echo against a backdrop of old krautrock mechanical motorik rhythms, allied to the physically gripping immediacy of techno and noise . . .Add Land marks a departure, a shift, a move towards a new horizon, 'the coast is clear/ add land from here'. Tellavision has severed those connections which increasingly felt like constraints to her -- the close link to machines, for example, the way her voice became entangled in electronic sounds. Now, her vocals occupy a clear space in the foreground, whilst she still chooses to add her own choral voice on some songs. The difference is that these choirs no longer blur her subjectivity, instead they serve to magnify or multiply it. No matter the flutters, shivers and doubts in the shadows, there is a new strength in evidence here, a new steadfastness in her music: Add Land is an upbeat, optimistic work, meeting the world head on. Fear may be a leitmotif on Add Land, but the spotlight is directed more towards the love which enables us to overcome our fears: our love for each other, for ourselves . . . Once again, Tellavision has written and recorded all of the songs herself. She was joined on production by Thies Mynther, better known to us as one half of the Phantom/Ghost duo, who met Tellavision through one of her more recent theatrical works . . . Tellavision has never sounded so immediate, so confident, so very much in the moment. This is her finest album to date: 'Drop utopia/ drop dystopia/ it's all here.' GOW, PETE Here There's No Sirens CD
Clubhouse Records release Here There's No Sirens, the debut solo album from Case Hardin front man Pete Gow. Long regarded as one of the UK's finest songwriters, Gow delivers an album rich in songwriting prowess and full of evocative imagery. A storyteller at heart, Gow conjures up a modern-day classic that entwines itself around your heart whilst penetrating the soul, underlining his reputation whilst stretching the band confines into new pastures. Awash with strings and piano, Here There's No Sirens is undoubtedly Gow's boldest endeavor. The album was produced by Joe Bennett (Bennett Wilson Poole) at Farm Music Studios in Oxfordshire. Pete: "I asked Joe to make this sound unlike any record I had previously made, so listeners can be assured they are hearing something uniquely different. Joe was the perfect foil... he politely appeared to tolerate that ridiculous mandate." Case Hardin are one of the UK's most loved Americana bands and have played festivals such as C2C, Truck, Maverick, and Wood. Their last album Colours Simple (2015) was described as a "rock masterclass" by Q Magazine, an "album lovers album" by Mojo whilst No Depression relished its "ambitious, headstrong and no holds barred" approach.

NEW BLOCKADERS, THE Live At Sonic City CD/DVD
Live At Sonic City includes an audio/visual document of The New Blockader's last ever live performance which took place at the Thurston Moore-curated Sonic City festival in Kortrijk, Belgium in 2017. Fans of noise music will need no introduction to the work of TNB. Ron Lessard, of legendary US Noise label RRRecords, once stated, "I'd give the nod to TNB as being the first truly devoted noise artists." TNB served as a major influence on legendary noise pioneers such as Merzbow and their influence on the current crop of popular crossover noise artists, such as Wolf Eyes, is immeasurable. TNB's performance at Sonic City can best be described as a noise symphony: metal-bashing and grinding, hammering, eviscerating microphone feedback, torrents of glorious mangle and harsh electronics all skillfully blended with a collage of manifold sounds and dynamics. Far from being a typical noise show, TNB's performance (if it can be described as such) contained elements of absurdist theater and performance art, although, TNB would likely loathe to be described as such. A magnificent display of the art of noise, TNB as defiant as ever in their total rejection of everything. "For optimal enjoyment we recommend that this DVD be viewed with no sound." Six-panel digipak. DVD is PAL format, region free.

DE SARAM/BENOIT DELBECQ, MANDHIRA Spinneret CD
Mandhira de Saram and Benoît Delbecq met in 2016 in Paris and soon discovered that they loved playing together. They recorded Spinneret a year later, over a day of quiet and meditative composing, at curious distance from the animated playing they are both usually drawn to in their own projects. With a natural flair for exploring the possibilities of their instruments, they weave together a delicate tapestry of sound and texture, which hangs as though stretched and suspended in the air. Spinneret evokes something of a folk-tale, as these two internationally acclaimed players tell of a unique sonic landscape: vast, subtle, and timeless. SETE, BOLA Aqui Esta O Bola Sete... LP
Cornbread Records presents a reissue of Bola Sete's debut, Aqui Esta O Bola Sete, originally released in 1957. The Brazilian-born master guitarist Bola Sete (literally translated to "seven ball" and a snooker reference) originally studied music at the conservatory of Rio while playing in his own jazz sextet and small samba combos. Sete spent time in Italy and also absorbed jazz influences as he was an avid fan of Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt. It was these influences, along with the local samba and bossa nova flavor he was absorbing on a daily basis in Brazil that form the foundation of his sound. Aqui Esta O Bola Sete combines those influences beautifully in a perfect jazz samba setting, showcasing a fully-formed artist who had been a professional musician for years before releasing this album. Sete counted among his admirers and fans such disparate legends as Dizzy Gillespie and John Fahey, and one listen to this masterful debut will tell you why. 180 gram vinyl.

VALENTE & THE COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA, CATERINA 86 2LP
A very clear recommendation for all music lovers, especially for the fans of the big band sound with full dynamic range. Originally released in 1986, here's the double-LP edition from 2016. Recorded at the legendary Criteria Studio, Miami, Florida with additional recordings and final mix at Arco Studios, Munich. Caterina Valente (born January 14, 1931 in Paris, France) is a French-born, Italian multilingual singer, guitarist, dancer, and actress. COLDHARBOURSTORES Vesta CD
From out of the wilderness comes Vesta, the third full length album from Coldharbourstores, conceived entirely by the established line up of Lucy Castro, David Read, Michael McCabe, and Liam Greany. The band were determined to shorten the gap between albums after their critically acclaimed second album Wilderness (RAPT 077CD/LP, 2017) had taken 14 years to release, following the band's debut More Than The Other, in 2002. What transpired is essentially a love album - universal, personal, eternal - keeping the flame alive no matter what. Vesta was recorded and produced, once again, by Bark Psychosis legend Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker, Silver Apples, These New Puritans, and British Sea Power), with long-time design collaborator Martin Andersen (AndersenM, Lush, The Breeders, 4AD/V23, JK Rowling's Pottermore) again translating the music into a stunning new sleeve design. Two singles have been taken from the album: "Disenchantment" and "Castle", which have accompanying remixes from Silver Apples, Fuxa, and L-Shape. Jonathan Pound (Throwing Muses, Micah P. Hinson), together with a performance by Tania and Kentaro of the Tarinainanika Theatre Unit of Japan, has directed the video for lead single "Disenchantment".

ABRAMS AND NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY, JOSHUA Mandatory Reality 2CD
Mandatory Reality, the new album by Joshua Abrams and Natural Information Society, is here. Setting aside (for the moment) the electric instrumentation of Simultonality (GB 048CD/MTE 068LP, 2017) and Magnetoception (MTE 063-64LP, 2015), Joshua Abrams conceived Mandatory Reality for an eight-piece acoustic manifestation of NIS, consisting of himself on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet. A double album, Mandatory Reality is comprised largely of two performances, both Joshua Abrams compositions, 24- and 40-minutes in length. While new to the band's records, long duration pieces are familiar to those who've heard Joshua Abram and NIS in concert in recent years, where elaboration on a single composition for an hour or more is not unusual. Gradual tempos dominate Mandatory Reality. Recorded two months before the 2017 solar eclipse, Mandatory Reality is the sound of Joshua Abrams and NIS taking its time. Merging methodical compositions with sonically voluptuous orchestration, Abrams heightens the immersive and hypnotic qualities Abram and NIS music is known for, taking the band and the listener deep into a collective meditative space. A grand realization of long-form psychedelic music, Mandatory Reality is a dispatch from a sound world that is increasingly unique to itself. All performances on Mandatory Reality are full takes recorded live to tape by the full ensemble, magnificently captured by Greg Norman at electrical audio, Chicago -- the first true "audiophile" recording of Joshua Abrams and NIS. Mastered by Helge Sten at Audio Virus, Oslo. Cover painting by Lisa Alvarado. Jackets, retro-audiophile sleeves and record labels hand-screen printed by Alan Sherry at Siwa Studios, Northern New Mexico.

PACASSONI GROUP, MARCO Frank & Ruth CD
Pierre Ruiz on the release: "I cannot exactly remember when the idea of this album was born in my mind. What I am sure of is that I always wanted to complete such a project, which was to realize the dream of a vibraphone and marimba tribute to the music of my favorite musician composer, Frank Zappa. I met Marco Pacassoni about six years ago. I called him because we were looking for a vibraphonist for a tour with the artist Bungaro. We immediately developed a real friendship and when I told him about my idea and my fascination with Ruth Underwood, explaining that for me the best Zappa albums were the ones on which she played . . . When Marco decided to really go for it (about two years ago), his first statement was that it was impossible not to include 'Peaches En Regalia' and 'The Black Page' on the album . . . From the beginning, when we first spoke of possible musicians, it was very clear to Marco that he needed to invite Lorenzo De Angeli and Enzo Bocciero to this project. Both talented musicians, and members of his quartet, I agreed that they would perfectly fit. Marco and I both wanted a guitarist -- and since is a very courageous decision for a tribute to Zappa -- I was convinced that Alberto Lombardi, with whom I had worked on another album, was equally technically and artistically perfect for such a project. I discovered Gregory Hutchinson when he was playing drums with Joshua Redman in 2000. Since then, he'd been for me one of my top-of-mind drummers . . . Marco also wanted to pay tribute to Ruth. That's why he wrote 'For Ruth' . . . The Zappa Songbook represents more than half of the music that he published. It would have been illogical not to include at least a couple of songs. Alberto is actually an accomplished singer, having recorded two albums. 'The Idiot Bastard Son' is one of his favorites, and this selection was met with much enthusiasm by Marco because we'd had this particular tune on our shortlist. I also had in mind to feature Petra Magoni on this album. She is one of my favorite Italian voices, and in my opinion, Petra's tone is perfect for Zappa music."

LP version. Sleaford Mods are one of the most important, politically charged and thought-provoking duos currently making their mark on the UK music scene and beyond. They are now poised to release their fifth studio album entitled Eton Alive. The new album, which features 12 new tracks from the prolific artists, was recorded in Nottingham. The record will be the first release on Jason and Andrew's newly formed label Extreme Eating and their first album since parting ways with Rough Trade Records."Eton Alive speaks for itself really. Here we are once again in the middle of another elitist plan being digested slowly as we wait to be turned into faeces once more. Some already are, some are dead and the rest of us erode in the belly of prehistoric ideology which depending on our abilities and willingness, assigns to each of us varying levels of comfort that range from horrible to reasonably acceptable, based on contribution. So after the digestive system of the Nobles rejects our inedible bones we exit the Arse of Rule, we fall into the toilet again and at the mercy of whatever policies are holding order in the shit pipe of this tatty civilisation. It is here our flesh regenerates as we rattle into another form, ready, and ripe for order". --Jason Williamson on Eton Alive

ELKHORN Sun Cycle LP
"Two mind-bending slabs of acoustic and electric guitars, wandering into corners of acid-logic only accessible to bravest explorers. Elkhorn is a duo -- Jesse Sheppard and Drew Gardner -- from NYC. Their earlier records (Elkhorn on Beyond Is Beyond, The Black River on Debacle) would have blown us away, even if we didn't know Jesse from his work as a film-maker (he directed the Glenn Jones/Jack Rose doc, The Things That We Used to Do) and organizer (he put together the 1,000 Incarnations of the Rose festival). Elkhorn's music, which we had suspected might be in a fairly traditional American Primitive vein, was anything but. And these two LPs (released individually, but recorded more or less simultaneously) explore a whole warren of new style caverns. Sun Cycle was recorded at Jason Meagher's Black Dirt Studio and is closer to their pure duo sound (although guitarist Willie Lane and percussionist Ryan Jewell are along for the ride). There are elements of the American Primitive thread present, but these touch mostly on the outer reaches of the form, like Gene Estibou & Jean-Claude Pickens' Intensifications, or the crazy distentions of MV and PG Six. Layers of pluck and soar and light percussion mix at the upper edge of the cosmic barrier, and Sun Cycle is, to our ears, Elkhorn's most adventurous and fully realized album yet. On Elk Jam (FTR 425CD-LP), Willie Lane and Ryan Jewell function more as members of a psychedelic folk-rock quartet, and the troupe takes things even deeper in a Bay Area-styled trip zone. Recalling the classic ruminations of Mountain Bus, the full four man Elkhorn is exactly what the doctor prescribed for a generation of sack-butts who imagine John Mayer's pudgy phallus-riffs have shit to do with transcendental psych exploration. Elkhorn are the true sonic dealio. Instrumental music doesn't get much better than this. As Capt. Beefheart once said, 'If you got ears/You gotta listen!' We couldn't agree more." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 300; Black/clear vinyl pressing.

IFRIQIYYA ELECTRIQUE Laylet El Booree CD
Fusing the rhythms and invocations of the ancient Saharan Banga ritual with an electrical storm of contemporary sonics, Ifriqiyya Electrique's second album both grips and awakens. In Tunisian, Banga means "huge volume" and one cannot think of a more apt description of Laylet El Booree than that: Maximalist and relentless; Blood, sweat, and trance. Several years ago, two of the musicians who make up the five-piece Ifriqiyya Electrique -- Gianna Greco and François R. Cambuzat -- ventured to the Djerid desert of Tunisia to investigate and confront the religious ritual of the Banga, a ritual of legendary intensity indigenous to the region. The musical duo's background is in the underground post-punk scene of continental Europe, as members of Putan Club and as collaborators with the venerable Lydia Lunch. But they are also voracious travelers and seekers of global sonics that are at least partially hidden from the western gaze. In 2017, Ifriqiyya Electrique released their debut album Rûwâhîne (GB 046CD/LP), an album which deftly brought together the hypnotic chants and metallic hand percussion of traditional Banga music with brutalist electronics and sheer rock volume. Three members of the Banga community -- Tarek Sultan, Yahia Chouchen, and Youssef Ghazala -- joined forces with Gianna and Francois not only on this acclaimed album, but also onstage throughout the eighteen months of touring that followed the record's release. It quickly became clear that the Banga had not been pointlessly retooled for western consumption, but rather through the deep commitment of the five Ifriqiyya Electrique musicians -- it had been transformed into something contemporary and unexpected. Ifriqiyya Electrique cryptically call this transformation a "post-industrial ritual" and the actual experience of hearing this music certainly echoes this moniker. The title of the second album Laylet El Booree translates as the "Night Of The Madness". It refers to the last part of the annual gathering of the adorcist ritual from the Banga of Tozeur -- it is the night when the spirits actually take possession of the bodies. With the band now joined by new member Fatma Chebbi (on vocals and tchektchekas hand percussion) one senses that the musical and cultural conversation is even deeper this time around. In fact, it doesn't feel like a speculative conversation at all, but rather something fully formed and undeniable. An emergent ritual in itself.

AHTI, MARJA Vegetal Negatives LP
Vegetal Negatives is a game of sonic mutations, mimicry, inversions, and association inspired by a text called "On pataphotograms", by the French writer René Daumal -- a quasi-metaphysical essay that toys with breaking the conceived separateness of natural forms through poetic imagination. Marja Ahti (b. 1981) is a Swedish-born artist living and working in Turku, Finland. She has been an active part of the Finnish experimental music scene for more than ten years, performing with Ahti & Ahti and under the moniker Tsembla. Now arriving at her debut LP under her own name, Ahti explores a new formal language and sonic palette that ventures far from the path of her earlier work. The four electroacoustic compositions on the album combine and arrange field recordings, electronic feedback, Buchla and ARP synthesizers, bowl gong and harmonium, textures of detailed acoustic sound, and sustained tones with gentle microtonal beating into a precise musical narrative. She juxtaposes recordings of rooms and empty vessels, natural and artificial climates, spontaneous and staged events. Ahti draws upon Annea Lockwood's ideas about associative movements between sounds based on shared characteristics and sonic energy. The sounds hover between abstraction and the deeply familiar, moving into a realm of poetic metaphor where they are set in relation to each other, fleetingly mirroring or shadow-dancing. Acoustic environments mutate into synthetically derived shadow forms.

PILGRIM, THE Walking Into The Forest LP
LP version. Gabriele Fiori -- already frontman of Rome-based outfits Black Rainbows and Killer Boogie and a key figure in Europe's heavy underground as the head of the Heavy Psych Sounds label and booking agency -- was not exactly lacking for things to do. And yet, a couple years back, The Pilgrim started to nebulously take shape as an idea for a solo-project, something different than the hard-driving psychedelia and garage heavy rock for which he'd already been so revered. It wasn't until January 2018 that he really got to putting songs together, but the end result on Walking Into The Forest is a space-folk release with a personality unto itself. Songs like opener "Peace Of Mind" evoke some of Fiori's more rocking side, while "Sunset In The Desert" feels like an ode to the acoustic album Kyuss never made, and side B, which starts with the Hawkwind cover "Brainstorm" and ends with the moody strum of "Suite #2" -- originally from Void Generator's 2004 debut EP; when Fiori was in the band -- a cosmic drift and textures that nonetheless remain accessible and organic thanks to their acoustic foundation. "The main point in common with Black Rainbows is the diversity of the songs," Fiori explains. "You have mind-dreams like 'Dragonfly' or 'Sailor,' or the more folk rock 'Peace Of Mind,' passing through space with 'The Time You Wait' and the melodic-melancholic 'When I Call Your Name.'" In completing the arrangements, Fiori turned to Black Rainbows drummer Filippo Ragazzoni, and as he says, "Songs came out so spontaneously and easy. I always played acoustic guitar and wanted to push further on this path. The songwriting, rehearsing and recording approach was so different from usual Rainbows or Boogie style, both to me and Filippo for drums, because all the instruments needed to be played smoothly, softly." With Walking Into The Forest, Fiori evokes a sound that is both classic and fresh, melodically rich and creatively constructed. It is a new outlet for Fiori that demands spiritual as well as auditory engagement, and an all-things-permissible sonic context that one can only hope The Pilgrim continues to explore. PILGRIM, THE Walking Into The Forest (Yellow & Red Marbled Vinyl) LP
LP version. Limited edition yellow and red marbled vinyl. HIGH REEPER Higher Reeper CD
High Reeper is back with their second release Higher Reeper and they aren't fucking around. The sound and smell of leather, weed, and death now has a hint of Campari and cocaine to color all eight tracks. With the addition of their new drummer Justin Di Pinto, High Reeper has managed to focus their sound and expand it at the same time. The record is darker and heavier than their first offering, High Reeper (HPS 072CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2018) with guitars that crush like a tank and lyrics that paint a picture of the world nearing its end. While the sound of Higher Reeper is more focused, at the same time it manages to be more complex and varied. With tracks ranging from ones as heavy as the album opener, "Eternal Leviathan", to the ethereal ballad "Apocalypse Hymn", this album takes one all the way to hell and leaves one there to rot. Higher Reeper was again produced, engineered and mixed by bass player Shane Trimble at TTR studios and Delwood Sound and mastered by Mike Tarsia. Solomacello created the incredible cover that captures the mood of the record while giving a nod to classic heavy metal.

LITTLE VILLAINS Philthy Lies CD
The Little Villains' debut album Philthy Lies is a half hour slice of rock-n-roll dream cake! Somehow as if heaven sent a rare treat, one can experience the exceptional and ferocious talent of the late Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor one more time! Yes, the very same Taylor that provided the pioneering backbeats to all the albums as a member of the classic lineup of the iconic rock group Motörhead. Coupled with the solid hook-led songwriting and guitar craft from Mr. James A Childs who also fronts the desert rock band Avon, and the youthful thrashing energetic bass guitarist Owen Street of the Welsh sludge duo Vails, this makes for a killer combination. The band's rapport is evident throughout the record; their relaxed and candid approach and repartee is well-captured. Like a nomad scene from the Mad Max: Road Warrior (1981) movie, cars fully laden with instrumental weaponry speed across the desert. Tracks were laid for the album at Unit A Studios in Palm Springs, California in February 2007. Philthy Lies was produced and engineered on two-inch tape by Childs with Unit A's owner Robbie Waldman assisting the session. Recently, James has carefully carved the record's sound to maximum justice from the original tapes from mix to master, and it is some of his best work to date. Philthy Lies is a testament to Taylor's professionalism and is proof that he was still every bit the rock and roll giant, even 15 years after his departure from Motörhead.

BJORK, BRANT Jacoozzi LP
LP version. Brant Bjork on Jacoozzi: "Back in December of 2010, I went into a house in Joshua Tree California to record another solo record. About four days into the sessions, I decided to abandon the eight songs I was working on, told my long-time friend and engineer, Tony Mason, to start rolling tape and I proceeded to play drums in my natural improv style. After multiple drum track performances were captured, I then started layering guitars, bass, and percussion in the same improvisational spirit. I essentially decided to 'jam' by myself for the rest of my scheduled sessions. When the recording session had finally come to an end, I put the eight unfinished tracks on the 'shelf' as well as my 'solo jam session' tracks. I was much more content with the 'jam' tracks as it was a creative release that was needed at that time. I decided to call the collective tracks, Jacoozzi. At the time, it reminded me of the feeling of my first solo recording sessions for my first solo release, Jalamanta... only more 'free'. At that time in 2010, I had no formal plans to release any of the music from those sessions... Jacoozzi included."

BJORK, BRANT Keep Your Cool LP
LP version. Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Brant Bjork's Keep Your Cool, originally released in 2003. Keep Your Coolmarks itself as easily one of Brant Bjork's most accessible and catchiest album. A direct continuation of the raw, straight-to-the-point rocker that was the Brant Bjork and The Operators record (2002), it also brings back some of the more relaxed, levitating aura of Jalamanta (1999) resulting into a best-of-both worlds scenario. Starting out with funky guitar rhythms and congas "Hey, Monkey Boy" is a short and entertaining opener that sets up the stage to the other tracks. The songwriting for the most part is as about simple as it can get, with mid-paced, often blues/funk influenced riffs leading them, accompanied with Bjork's relaxed, swagger-filled vocals. But don't mistake this for laziness because these are well-written and effective riffs that are delivered with crystal clear precision. Thus, with songs "Johnny Called" or "Gonna Make The Scene", Brant proves that you don't have to go for ten+ minute long, abstract feedback-driven jamming to deliver good stoner rock. A good head-banger, a soulful ballad, a relaxing, acoustic guitar piece: Keep Your Cool has all of them. Not to mention sweet guitar licks, a beefy production and a great, positive vibe that oozes from the '70s and weed (especially in the Cream-like "I Miss My Chick"). With eight songs and 33 minutes it's short, sweet, delivers the punch and keeps up its replay value high. Keep Your Cool is like every Brant Bjork record: The honest sound and music of a dude that you would want to hang out and party with.

OREYEON Ode To Oblivion CD
Oreyeon's sophomore album, Ode To Oblivion comes after two years of experimental sessions in their little studio recording nestled between the sea and the mountains in the northwest of Italy. This new full-length combines all band members' musical influences and takes shape leaving behind and going beyond the rules that mostly describe the classical stoner rock genre. From the first track, a strong sense of nothingness blends into a long unsettling travel through a microcosm full of colors while black shapes lead the traveler into a spiral of nihilistic lyrics, title tracks and monolithic riffs all at the same time. A pinch of the '90s vocals legacy gives this full length a gloominess that crowns a long period of rehearsals playing and jamming over all sorts of musical borders. The album has a start and an ending; along with what's in the middle, it all seems to be connected by a long line of heavy-psych-stoner rifts that evokes the feeling of listening to the mighty Blues For The Red Sun (1992) from desert legends Kyuss. It sounds like a long suite that never ends; the vocal structures and harmonization are more complex, and melodically richer while the music tends towards a heavier path, taking cues from way different kinds of genres and band references.

BODZIN, STEPHAN Powers of Ten 3x12"
2019 repress; Pressed on 180-gram vinyl; includes download code. German techno mainstay Stephan Bodzin unleashes his full-length musical vision on the world in the form of Powers of Ten, providing another great insight into the melodically rich mind of this modern great. Bodzin says, "Powers of Ten has been with me all my life and is named after a book that has been my background hiss, its confusing truth is my only real faith and its infinity shows me its finiteness. The album is about harmonies, melodies, rhythms. It is an homage to Bob Moog, full of techno beats and sounds and space and party and ecstasy and dancing and listening, and crying and feeling. It is a journey, a philosophy of life, a view of the world, a vague perception. It is my wife, my children, my family, my friends, my passion, my enemy, my greatest fulfillment, my fear, my deepest peace, my power, all my love." As such, this album is hugely personal and is filled with cerebral messages and well-thought-out concepts. All this shines through and makes the listening experience all the more engaging from start to finish. Kicking off with the spine-tingling chords and louche beats of "Singularity," cuts like "Lila" then continue to confirm that Stephan Bodzin has a classical understanding of melody that is way above average. "Blue Giant," "Wir," and "Ix" all manage to be uplifting and thoughtful while simultaneously driven and groovy, and "Birth" comes on with a hymnal high note, long-tailed pads, and subtly shifting beats. The ghostly grooves of "Zulu" mark the majestic midpoint of the album, which then continues to seduce with spiritual synths and more beautiful melodies on cuts like "Odyssee" as well as the album's standout title-track. Unfolding coherently and in soothing fashion, this album once again proves that few producers in the modern world have a knack for melody and an ear for sonic ingenuity quite like Stephan Bodzin.

VA Angkor Pop! LP
"Angkor Pop! is an exotic and ambitious compilation project showcasing the very best of Cambodia's new wave of East/West fusion groups -- an homage that marks several astonishing milestones in rock n'roll history: the 50th anniversary of The Stooges, the 40th anniversary of the seminal Iggy Pop/David Bowie albums 'The Idiot' and 'Lust for Life,' and, not least, the occasion of Iggy Pop's 70th Birthday! The best of Cambodia's music scene -- acts like The Cambodian Space Project, Doch Chkae, Kampot Playboys, Professor Kinski with Miss Sarawan and Jessica Lisha Srin, Bokor Mountain Magic Band, Phnom Skor just to name a few -- each covering selections from Iggy Pop's astonishing back catalogue -- with the full blessing of the man himself, who seemed (and seems) rather chuffed with this tribute coming from far flung Cambodia. Read the full story inside the LP, penned by one of the masterminds behind the project, Julien Poulson of Cambodian Space Project, and starring the other mastermind behind the project, CSP guitarist Jason Shaw. Storms of Biblical proportions! Theft by cat burglars of the hard drive which contained all the recordings! Sleuthing and shady back alley deals on the mean streets of Phnom Penh! Soaring fever and emergency surgery! High drama, frame-ups, tension, crimes and misdemeanors, intervention and ultimately redemption: it all conjures up a single revered name, that of one lone lupine man at the pinnacle of the rock mountain -- Iggy Pop!"

LAUGHING EYE Laughing Eye LP
Rooted in Swedish psychedelic folk music, Hanna Östergren (Hills, Träd Gräs och Stenar) takes a creative new grip on the genre. Under the name of Laughing Eye, Östergren creates spiritual Nordic raga, or nature music that stems back to prehistoric ages. Höga Nord Rekords now releases her debut album. Laughing Eye is more than just music, this is a distillate of ancient superstition, fear, euphoria, and nature romanticism. The sound edges on the upper tree line and in the closing track, "Agnetero / Huset", Östergren takes a step off the mountain top, into space where the flute melodies float weightless to the outer rim of our solar system. Laughing Eye is deep, warm and embracing sounds for cold urbanized souls, a buzz or a murmur from the far past, translated to music that can interpreted.

2019 repress; limited clear vinyl. Negative Fascination is the first official full-length album from Silent Servant. Juan Mendez has achieved international acclaim as a DJ and is one of the founding producers of the infamous and highly-influential Sandwell District label. Long-time followers will feel the effects of a die cast over a decade of precision and dedication to underground minimalist electronic music. Mendez blends his previously-stated interpretations of early post-punk, filtered through the monolithic works of Basic Channel with his own progressively nihilistic vision of industrial music. He utilizes a relentless and uncompromising mastery of hard-as-nails sequencer techno combined with dystopian atmospherics filling the void. Negative Fascination bridges disparate factions on ideological grounds, regardless of sound in the age of mutation. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Air Studios, London.

ALBERICH Quantized Angel LP
LP version. Includes large format poster. Few contemporary industrial acts are spoken of in such highly reverential terms as Alberich, the solo project of underground super-producer Kris Lapke. While Lapke himself may best be known for his production and mastering work, both for such diverse sounding acts like Prurient, Nothing, and the Haxan Cloak to his audio restoration work for COUM Transmissions and Shizuka, Alberich has achieved a cult on par with many of the legends he works with; Lapke's diverse contributions as a producer are recognizable for the perfect balance of maximalist and minimalist electronics that Alberich has relentlessly authored. Since Alberich's 2010 masterful and highly collectable two-and-a-half hour NATO-Uniformen album (HOS 421LP), he has become a powerful force of modern industrial music. With only a series of limited tape and split releases, fans have been waiting with bated breath for a true follow-up album. Quantized Angel is Alberich's first full-length album in almost a decade. In the intervening years between albums, Alberich has grown more nuanced, creating atmosphere and tension on par with Silent Servant's classic Negative Fascination LP (2012) in regards to production and attention to detail. The results create a newly polished but no less intense vision of modern industrial music. Over the course of the album's eight tracks, Alberich demonstrates a vision of ruthless existential electronics, a sound both commanding yet questioning in introspective spirit. Features exclusive track contributed to Berghain 09 2x12" mixed by Vatican Shadow on Ostgut Ton.

FOFANA, LAMIN Brancusi Sculpting Beyonce LP
Lamin Fofana is an electronic producer and artist. His instrumental electronic music contrasts the reality of our world with what's beyond and explores questions of movement, migration, alienation, and belonging. He is from Sierra Leone, lived in Guinea, United States, and currently located in Berlin. "Fofana, who was born and raised in Sierra Leone and Guinea, runs the Sci-Fi & Fantasy label -- home to, among other things, Lotic's first releases. His own work is part of a dialogue between techno, as it's broadly understood, and more abstracted forms. With the Another World EP, he attempts to link techno back to the real world, to bridge aesthetics with socio-economics, with ocean currents, with stale bread and dirty water. It's right there in the subtitle of the third track: '(Realist Mix)'." --Pitchfork "Fofana paired techno beats and nebulous pads to create instrumentals that seek to contrast the reality of our world with what's beyond." --The FaderLamin Fofana on Brancusi Sculpting Beyonce: "In the face of devastating violence, how are you responding? I think deeply about the moment we're in and am searching for a response that's not blatant or overt, but more-so inviting the listener to contemplate their own mindset. The music here is an expression, my response to surviving these traumatic, unpredictable times. Most of the new sounds came out of the experience of living in Berlin and traveling around Europe. 'Brâncu?i sculpting Beyoncé in gold lamé' is a line from Mike Ladd's song 'Blonde Negress' from the album Negrophilia (2005). The album was inspired by Petrine Archer-Straw's book of the same name (with the subtitle 'Avant-Garde Paris and Black Culture in the 1920s'). The book explores the Paris art world's embrace of black American and African culture -- and its co-option of black art and culture, which played heavily into Art Deco, Cubism, jazz, etc. I read the book some years back, but I love how Mike Ladd warps it, drawing a long line between Beyonce and Brancusi, whose 'Sleeping Muse' was inspired by African masks."

PHRESOUL The Word Was Made Phresh LP
The Word Was Made Phresh is the name of Phresoul's album on Hyperjazz Records. Seven instrumental tracks, tight and essential, which bring into sharp focus the talent and versatility of one of recent years' most interesting groups in the jazz, hip-hop, and alternative-rock scenes. The new project by the trio, which is one third English and two thirds Italian, formed by Charlie Stacey (piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizer), David Paulis (double-bass), and Enrico Truzzi (drums), dismantles jazz's traditional rules, absorbs influences and contemporary sounds, and portrays with lucid irony the contradictions and conflicts of our times. This record comes two years after their debut Metempsychosis (2016), and solidifies Phresoul's sound, where noise-rock improvisations coexist with neo-psychedelia, abstract hip-hop, and space-jazz. Just like in "Monitor Lizard", a syncopated piece which introduces you with immediacy to an energetic jazz interference, able to capture a single moment, moving as rapidly as a reptile, never in straight lines. The melancholy beats of "Institutional Violence" punctuate the piano's melody, which slowly transforms into synth and the futuristic slow-funk of "Sphere Alliance", anticipating the accelerated beginnings and pauses of "Lithium", an undoubtedly hip-hop jazz 3.0 track. The liquid atmospheres and irregular drumming of "Hipster Antichrist" brings to a close with amused hysteria this rhythmic ellipsis which looks at the West with melancholy and little confidence ("Trump-Pence"). The tension built by the continuous changes in rhythm is released in the torrential "Blended Family", in which Stacey's keys progressively conquer space between the noise-guitar and the powerful and irregular beats of drum'n'bass, for an epilogue to a fresh and original record that is inspired equally in its inception and its execution.

BURR AND CHARLES CURTIS, ANTHONY Chamber Music: Alvin Lucier & Morton Feldman CD
Anthony Burr and Charles Curtis present a collection of curated compositions from Alvin Lucier and Morton Feldman. Two Lucier pieces, "August Moon" and "Trio For Clarinet, Cello & Tuba" are presented here for the first time. Liner notes are excerpted from a lecture on Morton Feldman given by Alvin Lucier. A selection from Alvin Lucier's liner notes: "For Feldman, dynamics serve an acoustical function. When he mitigates a piano attack he reduces that spike of noise that's at the onset of every piano sound leaving only the sinusoidal pure after-sound. It's as if he invented electronic music with the piano.""Lucier manages to hear a layer of acoustical physics in Feldman's music that perhaps no one else would hear. He's hearing something in Feldman that is actually coming from his own musical world; in a way, hearing his own music in Feldman's, and drawing inspiration from that."

LUCIER, ALVIN Orpheus Variations CD
Orpheus Variations is a new composition by Alvin Lucier for solo cello and seven wind instruments. It is based on a particular sonority from the first movement of Igor Stravinsky's ballet score, Orpheus; a sonority that has haunted Lucier for decades. Orpheus Variations is one of eight large-scale compositions made expressly for Charles Curtis by Alvin Lucier in the last 15 years. This performance was conducted by Petr Kotik, with Charles Curtis playing solo cello alongside members of the SEM Ensemble."Lucier speaks first of a sonority, and only then of a chord. He discusses the chord, its notes and their disposition, but what haunts him is a 'particular sonority.' A sonority is the product of physical action on physical materials: the instruments, the registers in which they are activated, the breath of the musicians, the waveforms thus produced, their merging and interfering, and finally the moment and place of these actions. An energy field, certain to vanish completely once the musicians put down their instruments. However concrete and real the actions and materials, the sonority they produce is a phantom."

WAGNER, VANESSA Inland 2LP
Double LP version. Includes a bonus track: Philip Glass's "Etude n°5". Inland is Vanessa Wagner's continuation of the exploration of the minimalist composers register to complete the solo continuum of the Statea released in 2016 with the Mexican producer Murcof. Inland highlights a set of pieces, mostly rare or unavailable to date (Moondog, Nico Muhly, William Susman, Bryce Dessner, Gavin Bryars...) and some other well known (Philip Glass, Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman) that Vanessa Wagner performs with her classic pianist background and velvet sound. The title of the album refers to John Cage's Imaginary Landscape (1939), one of the first works to use electronic devices. Making more with less, the album turns long harmonies into multicolored prisms, miniature detailed embroidery, sighs and breaths, syncopated or restrained chants. The choice of works and their sequencing was dreamed up as a sort of storytelling. Between familiar melodies and unknown rarities, the pianist dug deep to find previously unreleased pieces. Within the cornucopia of Wagner's career, Inland stands as a hitherto unknown intimate and dream-like space. The album is both the fruit of her maturity and a new temporality that she is now exploring -- a secret conversation between her spirituality and the deep connection she maintains with nature, the elements, and living matter. The Inland journey begins with the vision of iconoclastic Moondog, who claudicates over a modest ritornello, and continues with French composer Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch's "Louella", like a volatile caress. On the way, you come across familiar figures like Philip Glass, and rediscover Michael Nyman's "The Heart Asks Pleasure First", as Wagner's fingers transfigure the cult piece, rendering it with delicate sensuality. At the origin of the source, German composer Hans Otte plays entrancing magic tricks with the fluids that spring henceforth; on the horizon, the inescapable Meredith Monk draws you into her hypnotic circles; elsewhere, Bryce Dessner is takes you on a dream-filled odyssey with characters who guide you to boundless territories, and William Susman breaks down boundaries under the harmonic mists and mute rhythms of "Quiet Rhythms". At the end, you find a blank canvas of quiet nature, a clearing in which Latvian composer Peteris Vasks invites you to listen to the suspended silences. When the album is over, the spirit of Inland continues to stir inside the listener's mind, in hazy reverie, clouds of nostalgia emanate from Vanessa Wagner's piano.

HARMONIOUS THELONIOUS International Dance Record 2 12"
Stefan Schwander, aka Harmonious Thelonious, presents four expansions of his latest album International Dance Record. Two new tunes, as well as two remixes each from Tolouse Low Trax and Wolf Müller. The new tunes, condensations of the 2016 album: the waist-deep sway "Blinky" and the pumping "Shark Dance". A Walkman set too loud, ghetto-blaster too quiet, crosstalks in the bazaar, sun-bleached fabrics shimming in the Mediterranean wind. Tolouse Low Trax's "Rivera" remix drags on a hoarse scratch, relentlessly spurring on in the rhythm of approach. Wolf Mueller's remix of "RFS (Vol. 3)" does not detour, and takes no prisoners.

WALTON Murdah 12"
The Manchester producer exemplifies his range of sound with four weighty and moody tracks heavily focused on the dancefloor. Elements of dubstep run through the EP, especially on the title track with its floor-shaking bass rumbles, accompanied by skitterings of percussion and warped cries of "murder". In line with Kaizen's ethos, the rest of EP fuses elements of techno and grime to devastating effect, layered with spacey atmospherics and off-kilter rhythms. With love already shown by Pinch and Loefah, there's no doubt Walton's destructive club cuts will be getting plenty of minutes in the dance.

FORNO, CARLA DAL So Much Better 7"
Carla dal Forno launches her own label, Kallista Records, with her first original single in over a year, So Much Better. The widespread success of her debut album You Know What It's Like (BLACKEST 015CD/LP, 2016) and The Garden EP (BLACKEST 068EP, 2017) has seen dal Forno spearhead the latter years of the Blackest Ever Black vanguard. Now the London-based Australian artist turns her attention to releasing original work on her own label, Kallista Records. This two-track 7-inch record begins a bold year for dal Forno, who takes her lone kosmische misanthropy onto fertile new ground. The A-side single, "So Much Better", sees dal Forno step out from the shadows of emotional ambiguity into the vulnerable territory of anecdotal song-writing. Lyrics that echo the irrational passions of love scorned, in truth reveal a self-assured artist confessing to resentment which propels her. Here is dal Forno chiding herself in the mirror while excoriating an old infatuate with a vocal timbre that sits among the giants: the lilting power of Alison Statton, the mystic shamanism of Una Baines, and the post-punk cabaret of Vivien Goldman. The sparse production on both sides springs from the soft-pedalled cassette of covers, Top of the Pops, which dal Forno self-released last year (CARLA 001CS, 2018). Though the raw, dubbed-out vision takes a back seat on "So Much Better", overshadowed by dal Forno's fork-tongued lyrics, it is heightened on "Fever Walk" with acoustic drum racks ricocheting off fizzing drones, pastoral synth textures and meandering melody in the way of Broadcast, Flying Lizards, and Portishead. But the illusion of wide-open spaces belies an oppressive, hysteria-inducing humidity swelling from the studio vision of her past instrumentals like "Dragon's Breath" and "Italian Cinema". And with a nod to her old band, F ingers, dal Forno's voice-as-instrument hacks like a machete through her endless jungle of anxiety. This two track 7-inch, the object of a new existence, reflects dal Forno's life in London working at Low Company record store and her monthly radio show on NTS. All in with the history and tradition of British post-punk and independent music, she strides boldly into the abyss. So much better is yet to come...

ALIZADEH, SABA Scattered Memories LP
On his debut album Scattered Memories, the composer, musician, and true master on the Iranian spike fiddle kamancheh Saba Alizadeh blends his instrumental virtuosity with spherical electronics, samples of Persian music instruments and field recordings from his hometown Tehran. Born in Tehran in 1983 as son of the world-renowned tar and setar virtuoso Hossein Alizadeh, Saba Alizadeh studied the Iranian spike fiddle with Saeed Farajpoury and Keyhan Kalhor, plus photography and later experimental sound art with Mark Trayle at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. His musical activities that lead him all around the globe for performances (amongst others, at Carnegie Hall) branch into two different areas: on the one side Alizadeh is a highly-reputed virtuoso on his traditional instrument, on the other he likes to approach music from a more experimental/technological aspect in his electronic/electro-acoustic pieces. This not being enough, he founded Noise Works in 2014, a platform and label for organizing experimental concerts and for the transfer of knowledge of music technologies among young Iranian musicians which makes him a central figure at the forefront of the current, very vivid Persian music scene that gained a lot of attention through artists like Siavash Amini, Porya Hatami, and of course Sote who included a track by Alizadeh on the compilation Girih: Iranian Sound Artists (2018) that he had curated. In 2018, Alizadeh self-released his debut Scattered Memories on CD in Iran which now, in a reworked version, sees its deserved worldwide release on vinyl. Over the course of ten tracks, Alizadeh melts his two musical worlds into one: tradition meets modernism, eastern sounds meet western production, folklore meets contemporary electronics. An album that will appeal to an open-minded "world music" audience as well as fans of current streams like ambient or drone in its most subtle forms. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

LABRECQUE/BARAKAT Terminal Desert LP
Paul LaBrecque (Sunburned Hand Of The Man) and Ghazi Barakat (Pharoah Chromium) present two epic cosmic, dystopian tracks where guitars, synths, and traditional instruments blend into an anarchic sound system. After excessive years in rock bands like The Golden Showers or his solo project Boy From Brazil, time had come for the German-Palestinian artist Ghazi Barakat to develop a new aesthetic -- the birth of his alias Pharoah Chromium where Barakat creates "meta-music for meta-people in a meta-world", or in other words: a mutated blend of post-krautrock, psychedelicism, free jazz, ancient rituals, science fiction, and electronics. So far, the Berlin-based sonic performer released a couple of solo albums on labels like Grautag or Tapeworm and a triple LP with krautrock legend Günter Schickert. For his latest output he decided to simply use his civilian name Barakat, as does Paul Labrecque who contributes guitar and synthesizer to the two side-long tracks. "Jajouka Pipe Dream" is a clear reference to the Master Musicians Of Jajouka, with lots of flutes and percussion, a very rhythmical, ritualistic track, while "Planet R-101" turns out a space-y trip with elements of krautrock and kosmische musik/Berliner schule. What may sound contradictory on paper functions perfectly on LP: freeform/free-floating music, absorbing and integrating a wide range of influences and inspirations, sounds and styles -- and highly psychedelic! Artwork and photography by Nicolas Moulin. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Personnel: Ghazi Barakat - guembri, Moog synthesizer, beats, rauschpfeife; Paul LaBrecque - guitar, synthesizer. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

VA The Dreads At King Tubby's CD
Rastafarianism came to prominence in the late 1960s/1970s and had a huge influence on the musical culture in Jamaica. The sentiments of the songs reflected the struggles of life, as reggae music always did but now with an added spiritual/conscious element to the lyrics. By the mid-1970s most, if not all the top-flight singers were following the doctrine and growing their har to dreadlocks. Everything was truly "Dread". At the heart of this musical explosion was again Bunny "Striker" Lee a man who was always at the heart of the action and many times in his career ahead of the musical game. As Bunny Lee's stable of singers were at this time nearly all Rasta's and with the worldwide acceptance of Bob Marley, in especially the foreign territories, this musical style was the way forward for reggae music in the mid-1970s. The visual focal point of this new turn in reggae music would be a call to all things "Dread". Add to the mix Bunny Lee's close working relationship with studio wizard King Tubby, again not a Rasta himself, but someone who could sonically bring what was needed to the table and enable the whole musical chemistry to fall into place. Heavy rhythms were created to match the heavy and serious lyrics and "Versions Galore" as they say were coming out fast and furious. We have compiled a set of conscious tunes that not only match the "Dread" criteria, but also are just great tunes. The great Jacob Miller's "Zion Gates", Cornell Campbell's "Two Faced Rasta", Horace Andy's "It's Gonna Be Dread" alongside Linval Thompson's "Never Conquer Jah". Two timeless cuts from the The Abyssinians get a fresh outing by two great singers, firstly Don Carlos's cut to "Satta Massaganna" and the prince of reggae himself, Dennis Brown works "Declaration of Rights" in fine style. Johnny Clarke's "Man Like Me" and "Dem Say Rasta" still sounds as fresh today as when they were first laid down and Wayne Jarrett's "Live On Jah" and Frankie Jones's "Satta And Praise Jah" add to this great selection. All great "Dread" tunes that were cut or voiced at King Tubby's giving them that extra shine. So if you are Rasta or not this is a great set of tunes to make you move and also like all of the best things in life, makes you think... Also features Bonnie Davis. GOLDMANN, STEFAN Tacit Script CD
Tacit Script builds its own network of interdependent grids in which sound objects move and thrive along multiple dimensions. All frequencies fall into custom scales, developed individually for each track and generated by bending the standard chromatic system. Most electronically produced music operates with a 1V per octave tuning which is divided into 12 equally spaced steps, equivalent to the piano keyboard. Stefan Goldmann skews or stretches this variable in order to achieve different microtonal spacings, wider or narrower, thus eliminating the octave -- commonly a fixture in most music. Intervals might thus be at 75 or 110 or 138% of their "regular" ratio. Melodic objects then traverse these unfamiliar spectral structures, singing electric songs with alien voices. Divergent metric layers drift apart, only to be pulled back together at critical points. Clearly pulsed elements hammer out persistent patterns, yet complex polymetric friction persists over long stretches of time. Alternating continuous sweeps and abrupt shifts through wavetables define the highly synthetic, yet organically developing timbres of Tacit Script. Relentless repetition is the force which yields coherent composite shapes in this setting. The results are emphatically in the realm of techno -- what is being pushed forward are the interrelations of its constituent layers. The music in this album is derived from works originally commissioned for the five-hour music theater work ALIF, as premiered at Berlin's MaerzMusik Festival of 2016. Revised from 2017 to 2019 for the album format, the works herein are an excellent representation of Stefan Goldmann's ongoing investigation of the wider potentials of techno.

CARE OF THE COW Dogs' Ears Are Stupid CD
Mental Experience presents a reissue of Care Of The Cow's Dogs' Ears Are Stupid, originally released only on cassette in 1983. The album is a fascinating blend of psychedelic folk, minimal electronics and post-punk weirdness. Acid fuzz guitar, incredible vocal harmonies, drum machines, and analogue synths make it one of Chicago's best kept secrets, with a history that goes back to 1974. A trio formed by Victor Sanders, X Baczewska, and Sher Doruff, they had a very unique and eclectic sound, experimental yet very melodic, mixing psychedelic folk-rock with art-rock and DIY/post-punk. Their influences were very diverse: The Beatles, Fripp, Eno, Joni Mitchell, Carla Bley, Pauline Oliveros, and Eric Dolphy. Care Of The Cow debuted in 1975 with a 10" followed by their first album in 1981. By 1983, the band was adding drum machines and synths to their sound, highlighted by Victor's amazing guitar playing and X and Sher's perfectly blended vocal harmonies, resulting in Dogs' Ears Are Stupid, released only as a tiny cassette edition in 1983. For the Mental Experience, this is a lost gem from the '80s underground which really deserved a reissue. Here it is, done in collaboration with Steve Krakow of Plastic Crimewave/Galactic Zoo fame. Remastered from the master tapes, includes insert with liner notes Krakow and photos.

VA Soothing Songs For Babies (Berceuses Du Monde) CD
Mental Groove Records and Musée D'ethnographie De Genève present Soothing Songs For Babies (Berceuses Du Monde), curated by Madeleine Leclair, head of the MEG's department of Ethnomusicology, and Olivier Ducret of WRWTFWW Records and We Release Jazz. An inspiring collection of carefully chosen lullabies from all over the world, that will please both young parents and their children, as well as (world) music enthusiats looking for a peaceful and captivating listening. Lullabies exist in almost every culture in the world. While they relate to the world of childhood, they also evoke the privileged relationship established through music between an adult and an infant. The lullabies presented here were recorded at different times and come from eighteen countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and America. They share certain musical characteristics that can be identified from one piece to another: simple melodies, a sequence of short patterns repeated several times in succession, an overall melodic contour following a descending line. All the lullabies presented here come from records published with a copy kept in the Archives Internationales De Musique Populaire (AIMP) of the MEG. For fans of labels like Ocora, Smithsonian Folkways Records, Buda Music, Nonesuch, and traditional forms of music, ambient, (ethno)musicology, and children. CD comes in a digipack; Includes insert with liner notes in French and English.

DANCE SYSTEM Wind 'Em Up 12"
Brighton's James Connolly has left an indelible mark as L-Vis 1990, and as his alias Dance System. Following a five-year hiatus, Connolly returns as Dance System. On the title track, Dance System is playfully calling out for other DJs to wind up the crowd with the unexpected UK garage breaks. "Heeez Baaad" takes a single hypnotic loop and pushes it to its absolute limit. On "That That Sh**", the off-kilter horn loop is unsettling, but driven along by the low-end tom groove. "Body" closes out with an uplifting piano chord, before dropping you into minimal bassline and drum groove.

Active for roughly four years at the end of the sixties, Angel Pavement released just two singles in their lifetime -- 'Baby You've Gotta Stay' b/w 'Green Mello Hill' in October 1969, followed by 'Tell Me What I've Got To Do' b/w 'When Will I See June Again' in January 1970. Despite numerous high-quality recordings being made at Morgan Studios in Willesden, north-west London, the group failed to obtain a release for their intended album, Socialising With Angel Pavement. Here we reconstruct that LP -- initially slated to appear in August 1970 -- for the first time."

ELLICIST Point Defects CD
Creating a composition means making decisions. During times in which you virtually have all sounds that have ever been recorded at your availability, composers must choose between infinite possibilities. The duo Ellicist does not perceive this contemporary ocean of possibilities as too much choice, they are swimming in it. Ellicist are weaving thick textures from the most diverse tones and rhythms. Their tracks are placing synthetic buzzing, the croaking of frogs, low frequency billowing and humming, flutes, the droning of flies, and the whole spectrum of the digital creation of sound next to one another. This intensity of sensations is not supposed to overstrain the listener, it invites them to follow a process. This music does not have a strict structure; instead, it is breathing openness at every moment. Ellicist are incessantly oscillating between abstraction and elements of pop music. Melodies are being hinted at, and sounds are being piled up, at times tirelessly. Fragments of etheric choirs or field recordings are unfolding their associative power. The melodious Ink is a track full of touching intimacy and is in constant motion until it eventually pauses to create a silent ocean of sound. "Passage People" is permeated by a groove of throbbing synths. The tapestries of sound of "Ponds & Graves", on the other hand, are creating the foundation for expressive percussions. "Ihnen Steg" is almost a dub track. During the opener Hennepin and its follower "Lilei" sounds of palpable corporeity are being combined with ones that are hardly tangible. Point Defects has an incredible spatiality. At one point you might believe that you are able to precisely localize the sounds in an imaginary system of coordinates. And then the whole systemization crumbles. It is an astonishing production: you can almost taste the sounds. Ellicist are Thomas Chousos and Florian Zimmer. Chousos studied composition in Greece before moving to Berlin, where he is working as a producer and sound engineer under the moniker Tadklimp. Florian Zimmer has been playing with several groups; Besides Ellicist he is a member of Saroos and Driftmachine.

APPLE AND THE THREE ORANGES Free and Easy: The Complete Works 1970-1975 2LP
2019 repress; 2LP version. "Contains a 16-page booklet with full annotation, extensive liner notes, and never-before-published photos. This 2-LP set comes sleeved in a lovingly reproduced version of the cover photo. Edward 'Apple' Nelson is best known for the small clutch of 45s he released under the Apple and The Three Oranges name on local Los Angeles labels in the 1970s. His run with Sagittarius contains six unimpeachable soul and funk numbers released under the Apple and The Three Oranges banner and one issued under his own name, Ed. (sic) Nelson. These songs, and his prior recordings, are ripe for a historical reappraisal. Monday's manic rant relegated 'What Goes Around Comes Around' to the funk freak show, but Nelson's introductory 12 bars contain some of the most unique funk drumming ever cut to lacquer. The low fidelity of every Apple and The Three Oranges single was never a problem for the low-riding Eastside Angelenos, who lionized tracks such as 'True Love Will Never Die,' but their muddy quality cast Nelson outside of the canon in which troubled soul singers like Bobby Womack have held court for decades. Nelson's master tapes -- lost in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina -- will never surface to right this wrong. And the records themselves are rare: the 'Love Brings Out the Best of You,' 'Curse Upon the World' and 'I'll Give You a Ring (When I Come, If I Come)' singles are amongst the most sought after and expensive Los Angeles soul and funk records to ever list at auction. Thus, we are privileged to present Nelson's complete works in our Free and Easy anthology. Nearly forty years after he gave up on his recording career, we're left with little more than Nelson's explosive music and his straight-shooting stories of his life's arc. Comes with a 56 page booklet housed in a deluxe 'O-Card' reproduction of the original cover art."

Reissue of the debut self-released album by North London based One Eyed Wayne. A downbeat, drizzle ecked post-Sleaford Mods portrait of the UK in 2016 graphically brought to life. One Eyed Wayne is: Stephen Donoghue - guitars, vocals; Dean Leggett - drums, vocals; Pat Joslin - guitars; Donald Adams - bass."As society continues to teeter on the brink of total decay. They grasp the nettle of 'contemporary issues' by providing a cutting and breathless commentary on the minutiae of 21st century life. Sharing some ground with Art Brut and the Libertines, they look also for inspiration further back with the incomparable Ian Dury. On Attack Of The Luxury Flats, they take us on a whistle-stop tour of Broken Britain littered with aspirational ad breaks that are designed to make you feel inadequate without the fastest car/broadband/loan, nightmare night-life scenarios and local amenities so run down they eventually are demolished and replaced with high-money yielding ads. The package also includes unreleased John Peel session tracks and an Edward Barton cover recorded for a compilation tribute album. The band reformed in 2014 playing a handful of festival dates and low-key headline shows in Manchester and London. With core members Mark Hoyle (vocals/guitar), Cathy Brooks (bass) and former guitarist Chris Bridgett (guitar), Dub Sex will be playing more dates in 2019. CD digipack includes 24-page booklet."Dub Sex, one of my very favourites" --John Peel, BBC Radio 1, 1988."Dub Sex's music is a stark but galvanising post-punk surge -- reverberant drums and cheese-wire guitar plus a what-it-says-on-the-tin dub-edge to the bass. But it's Hoyle's voice that dominates the recordings -- a hugely expressive thing without obvious parallel" --Roy Wilkinson, Mojo, 2014.

ONE OF HOURS When You Hear The Music, It's Yours CD
One Of Hours' When You Hear The Music, It's Yours is cool, late '60s US-Pepperish psychedelia with inventive arrangements, fuzz guitars, and studio effects. Recorded in 1967-68 but shelved at the time, the group is famous for their "Psychedelic Illusion" 45. US garage-psych band One Of Hours formed in Lexington, KY, in 1966. After adding guitar player Bob Willcutt to their line-up, they released their second 45, "Feel the Pain"/"Psychedelic Illusion", in 1967. Work then began on an album of a complete but varied musical experience called When You Hear The Music, It's Yours. Fueled by the creative force of band member Shawn Foreman (a true visionary who would create the cult electro/disco project Transistor-Jet in the '80s), the group (now called Dandelion Wine) entered Chetwyd Studios where they, in true psychedelic mode, experimented and used unusual techniques like backwards recording, paper under piano strings, singing through a comb, interconnecting Fuzz boxes, etc. The finished master tape containing 12 songs with titles like "Two Heads For 35 Cents", "Sweet Dragonfly" or "Incense C-19X" was sent to the Liberty label with the promise of an album contract for 1968, but the deal never came through and the master tape was destroyed in a warehouse fire. Luckily, Willcutt kept a first generation copy of the master with perfect sound which is presented here. Includes insert with liner notes and photos.

AMNESIA SCANNER & BILL KOULIGAS Lexachast LP
Lexachast is an ongoing collaborative work by Amnesia Scanner, Bill Kouligas, and Harm van den Dorpel. Initially birthed as a joint, improvised performance between Amnesia Scanner and Kouligas at the ICA, London in 2015, it was later recreated and extended with visual artist van den Dorpel into a 15-minute online-only audiovisual work -- known simply as Lexachast. Since then, it has expanded into a live show that has been performed at Transmediale, CTM Festival, Unsound Krakow & Adelaide, Next, and LEV Festival and during Paris Fashion Week in collaboration with the brand Ottolinger. Now to be released on PAN, is a new document of Lexachast in its current, full-grown form. Whilst broadly inspired by the experience derived from and exposure to algorithmic patterns as generated by visual artist Harm van den Dorpel's specially-devised program, the work is a sonic reference to the fallouts of avant-EDM and cyberdrone. This in turn is simultaneously mirrored by the perturbing visuals, created by a unique algorithm that sources and blends various filtered imagery from DeviantArt and Flickr in real time -- with a bias towards the NSFW, extreme banality, and ornamental melancholia. The results were a perfect fit for the deliberate intention of non-intent, an anti-video of sorts, which ended up as a defining element for the project. Artwork created with Harm van den Dorpel's ever-evolving, image-sourcing algorithm. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

FARINAS & VIENTO SOLAR, IVAN Bloomer Plastico LP+CD
Guitarist and vocalist Iván Fariñas de Armas is the "grandfather" of Cuban rock n' roll. Yes, you heard right, Cuban rock n' roll has an "abuelo" -- maybe you didn't know there even was such a thing as "el rock cubano" -- but there is, and even if he's not a household name, Iván Fariñas should be, as he's extremely talented and is arguably the oldest still practicing rockero from behind The Mango Curtain since he started in the 1950s. He claims to have written and recorded the first Cuban blues-rock tune in English -- over 40 years ago. Fariñas founded his current group Viento Solar ("Solar Wind") in 1975 and was not able to record his music officially until the late 1990s. Though his recordings are known somewhat in Europe and South America, his official physical releases are not distributed beyond Cuba and he remains undiscovered in the United States. Now for the first time outside of Cuba, Ivan's intriguing life story and a selection of recordings of his long-lived band Viento Solar will finally be made available for the world to enjoy, thanks to Peace & Rhythm and Feeding Tube Records. Bloomer Plástico collects rare versions of some of Fariñas best compositions, recordings unheard outside Cuba that come from several "maketas" ("maquetas" or "demos") that pre-date his official studio productions and were recorded on reel-to-reel tape from 1996-2001, though some of the songs were originally composed in the '60s and '70s when rock was largely an underground phenomenon on the island. The collection ranges from metallic heavy rock with a punky edge to blues-rock, with a sprinkling of psychedelic and even some distinctly Cuban touches. Includes CD and full liner notes, rare photos, and lyrics.

LIMBOOS, THE Baia CD
Is good music good for anything? Well, you are supposed to connect to it. Make you dance. Feel happy, sad, fearless, in love, jealous and righteous and so much more. And hit you like five coffees in the morning and a few shots of cognac at night. The Limboos just perfected the recipe on their new album, Baia. The Limboos do what they wanna do. They know what they like and they know what you like even though that might be two different things. They work in their own rhythm and it's proven you can move to that rhythm. Everybody lost a few bucks at the end of the night but nobody cares. Everybody woke up a little tired and achy and didn't feel like going to work. But they did and did it even harder the next three times that week. Lucky you caught them on a Monday night. With Baia, their third album in five years, The Limboos will transport you, without asking, to a sweet and viscous spiritual ceremony that crosses paths between Chicago from Santiago de Cuba. This new one again produced by Mike Mariconda and with 100% of their own songs you get eleven new lessons in class and sweaty elegance. Check the single "Where Did She Go?" and see. You'll just dance and maybe fall down from exhaustion and make you do things you swore you would never do. Ignoring this rotten postmodern world, they don't try to transport you to when the times were better. They are just making better times- show by show, record by record. So you got lucky and found something you can listen to in the car, the bar, the barn, at work and even on public transport. But if you choose the last one beware for pickpockets, it's worth more than the cash you are carrying. The Limboos are: Roi Fontoira - vocals, guitar; Sergio Alarcón - organ, guitar, percussion, backing vocals; Daniela Kennedy - drums, backing vocals; Santiago Sacristán - double bass, backing vocals; Dani Niño - baritone sax.

2019 restock; Gatefold LP version. Technically his second LP after a collection of singles, this benchmark record from 1974 taught Istanbul's musicians and pop fans how to put Turkish folk songs from the 17th century together with meaty, thundering guitar solos. With a crack bass player by his side (Ahmet Güvenç from Bunalim and Baris Manco's Kurtalan Ekspres) and an electrified ba?lama in his hands, Erkin Koray lets his gloomy baritone voice float over wiry double-reed melodies, bulging riffs, and hammer-ons that go on for-friggin'-ever. 40 WATT BANANA, THE Peeled LP
The 40 Watt Banana, formed in 1968, was a unique band in New Zealand, the only group that ventured into the esoteric realm of Indo-Afro psychedelic music. Peeled includes their sought-after 45 from 1971 (the sitar-psych-dancer "Nirvana") plus previously unreleased recordings full of sitar, tabla, sarod, tanpura, trumpet, recorder, effects, and tape echo. Formed by Kevin Clark and Dave Parsons, initially as a jazz combo playing in restaurants, they soon incorporated elements of Indian and African music to their sound, after some soul searching and spiritual experiences. The result was an atmospheric, spacey, improvised sound. In 1971, they released their only 45 for the HMV label. It featured a great sitar-psych track, "Nirvana", similar to other psychedelic jazz-pop-funk experiments from the time such as "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set. ARTHUR Woof Woof LP
Woof Woof has existed somewhere for a long time, throbbing underneath the surface and masquerading as anything other than the pure energy it is, waiting to be extracted and molded into a form that can be consumed by everyone. With Woof Woof, Arthur beams pure-pop-liminality straight into the world, full of contradictions and twists, confusion and magic. This is an album that thrives in the in-betweens it creates then slips itself into. Decisions that may seem off-kilter or strange to other artists seem effortless to Arthur, pulled from another world, a world hidden to the average listener, hidden maybe for good reason. Woof Woof leaves you wondering from what dimension Arthur crossed over and how you can get there as soon as possible. There is a valley between sound and music that Woof Woof fills in with objects seemingly grabbed at random, from voicemails to dog barks, an uneasy path is created to bridge the divide. There is a maze in Arthur's debut LP and he doesn't care if you make it out in one piece.

Good Morning Peckham directs Henry Wu's loose and lazy sensibility towards a newly streamlined house sound. Equally adept on the keyboard as he is on the MPC, on Good Morning Peckham, he also gives you further insight into his mind of Wu as he takes to the mic -- toasting along to the soon-to-be-classic "Croydon Depot". MOTORPSYCHO The Crucible CD
2019 marks 30 years since Motorpsycho's humble beginnings in Trondheim. Both visually and musically, The Crucible starts where The Tower (2017) ended, but it soon takes on its own hue, and it is clear that it cannot be called a "sequel" as such: this is very much a step further out than anywhere the band ventured on The Tower. While it is broader lyrically speaking, it is even sharper focused musically and, if possible, even more idiosyncratic and insular than ever: unarguably a Motorpsycho album. There aren't many traditional song structures or pop format platitudes on display, and there is indeed hardly any respect paid to any trad rock song conventions on the whole album, but that's not really what one listens to Motorpsycho for anyway, is it? From the most Neanderthal of rock riffs to the most rhythmically oblique polytonal solo sections they've ever recorded, this album musically seems to sum up the extremes of the band's current interests and concerns. The Crucible was recorded at Monnow Valley Studios in Wales in August 2018 by Hans Magnus Ryan (guitars, vocals), Bent Sæther (bass, vocals, sundry), and Tomas Järmyr (drums), with co-producers Andrew Scheps and Deathprod. Scheps mixed the band's last two live recordings -- A Boxful of Demons and Roadwork Vol. 5 (MPLP 302LP) -- and in that process, made himself a logical choice to record the next studio album.

TIGER & WOODS A.O.D. CD
Unshrouded in mystery: what once started as an anonymous underground project with stamped white labels and a clever take on sampling, has since then unfolded to be one of the longest-running and most successful teams in current dance music. Nurtured by the sounds of the past and blessed with the techniques of today, the music of Tiger & Woods always kept evolving in and around the tropes of disco, house, and boogie. Classic dance music, if you will. Celebrating their tenth anniversary in 2019, Marco Passarani and Valerio Delphi managed to arrive at album number three. A.O.D. is a pun on A.O.R. (adult oriented rock) and a play on their own sound. Defying the restricting rules electronic music record shop crates, it's a departure and an arrival at the same time. Inspired by the faded buildings and images of discotheques on the Italian countryside, the romantic start and bittersweet endings of summer, beach life, and the excitement of traveling through the landscape to get to aforementioned temples of dance and subsequently the morning after. Except for the 100% sample-free "1:00 am", everything on A.O.D. is based on a quiver of cleared samples from the Roman institution that is Claudio Donato and his Full Time and Goodymusic emporium. In Tiger & Woods' hometown Rome, the often very electronic and futuristic sound of Italo disco had a different twist; much more boogie-based and influenced by the song-writing styles of New York City's dance scene, it played in a league of its own. Tiger & Woods use these materials to take them apart, out of context and into contrasting areas. Molding something completely new, one gets fooled to recognize Sade songs that aren't, pop music instrumentals, and a reprise of memories that never existed. A ride through one's brain in a convertible with an Italian FM radio station playing in the background. Or to use less stiff poetry: a chill-out album you can dance to or a dance album you can chill out to. Adult oriented dance. Digipak; includes booklet.

BLACK FLOWER Future Flora LP
LP version. With a hybrid jazz based on African grooves, Ethio-oriental melodies and psychedelic dub this Belgian five-piece creates an atmosphere where ancient and modern sounds fuse into a powerful, hypnotic, and groovy sensation. Receiving critical acclaim for their second album Artifacts (SDBANU 002CD/LP, 2017), the Belgian quintet are pleased to announce the release of their much-anticipated third album entitled Future Flora. Piloted by saxophonist/flutist/composer Nathan Daems (Ragini Trio, Dijf Sanders, Echoes of Zoo), the input of notorious musicians, drummer Simon Segers (MDC III, De Beren Gieren, Stadt), cornet player Jon Birdsong (dEUS, Beck, Calexico), keyboardist Wouter Haest (Voodoo Boogie), and bassist Filip Vandebril (Lady Linn, The Valerie Solanas) leads to the specific universe that only Black Flower is able to create. Where debut album Abyssinia Afterlife (2014) and Artifacts bathed in an atmosphere of psychedelics, mythical figures, ancient sounds, and modern cultures, Future Flora refers to the power of plants and their importance for the future. Future Flora is a metaphor for the importance of feeding and watering powerful and revolutionary ideas and initiatives that can save our world. Black Flower's musical cross-pollination of sounds and rhythms remain on Future Flora, but there is still room for a more Western touch with Romanian and Maloya (Réunion) influences. Daems developed his own arrangements where Western, Oriental, and Ethiopian scales and chords are fused together to create a real mix of traditional instrumentation and modern electrical vibrations. The strong underlying groove is omnipresent, but the room for psychedelics, folklore, and experimentation grows. Songs like "Hora de Aksum" combine modern western rhythms with doses of Balkan eccentricities while "Future Flora" takes you on a psych-delicious, 21th century, Ethio-dub-jazz trip with echoes of Mulatu Astatke and Fela Kuti.

HOUBEN, EVA-MARIA Erwartung 1 und 2 LP
Second Editions present Erwartung 1 und 2 by Eva-Maria Houben. Eva-Maria Houben's music has somehow always been about perspective. These two new pieces, one for piano and one for organ, are once again prime examples. The title is borrowed from Arnold Schönberg's one-act monodrama Erwartung Op.17, in which a woman wanders through the night in search of her (dead) lover. According to Schönberg, his work aims "to represent in slow motion everything that occurs during a single second of maximum spiritual excitement, stretching it out to half an hour". And this, in a certain way, is very descriptive of Houben's calm, patient recordings as well. As she disassembles a piercing twelve-tone chord of the said Schönberg piece, rendering it unrecognizable and making it fully her own. Changing the perspective. Once for piano, and once for pipe organ. Her respective protagonists. Includes download code. Edition of 300.

PETERS, MARK New Routes Out Of Innerland LP
LP version. Green vinyl. Former Engineers songwriter Mark Peters pays a final visit to his debut solo album Innerland (SCR 094CD/LP, 2018) with the release of New Routes Out Of Innerland, a collection of reworkings. Innerland was one of 2018's most surprising sleeper successes. An intentionally low-key album of windswept instrumentals inspired by Mark's move back to his native northwest, it gave musical nods to Eno, Talk Talk, Vini Reilly, and Richard Thompson, and first appeared as a limited-edition cassette before being expanded to vinyl and CD editions in April of 2018. Something about its beautiful simplicity struck a chord and slowly but surely. This new version, however, is completely different. It finds Mark looking outwards, away from the bleak, post-industrial landscapes of Wigan, and inviting eight different artists from around the world to interpret and translate the instrumentals of Innerland into their own musical and geographical languages. German sound artist Andi Otto takes "Twenty Bridges" and turns it into a weird world music groove, the cello recalling Arthur Russell, the rhythm Holger Czukay circa Movies (1979); Polish composer Olga Wojciechowska sprinkles stardust all over "Mann Island", morphing it into a slice of febrile, filmic techno; former Disappears and now FACS frontman Brian Case wrangles "Windy Arbour" into a dark, dystopian drone; as previously heard last year on a limited edition lathe-cut 7" single, Ulrich Schnauss subtly re-frames "May Mill" as elegiac electronica, the kind of oddity that could have graced a Tears For Fears B-side circa Songs From The Big Chair (1985); Moon Gangs, aka Will Young from BEAK>, climbs "Gabriel's Ladder" and finds some delicate drone'n'bass; American producer and DJ Odd Nosdam takes his experience of working with Boards Of Canada and turns "Shaley Brow" into a sinister tape collage, entirely in keeping with the murky history of the locale; E Ruscha V, the erstwhile Medicine guitarist also known as Secret Circuit, converts "Cabin Hill" into Balearic Blue Nile; finally, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma lights up "Ashurst's Beacon" as an inferno of deliciously distorted shoegaze. All eight are so disparate and yet they hang together perfectly, resulting in an exciting musical journey to somewhere completely new.

CAPON, JEAN-CHARLES L'Univers-Solitude LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Jean-Charles Capon's L'Univers-Solitude, originally released in 1972. The cello, although considered a minority instrument in the history of jazz and improvisation, has carved itself a niche, both in the USA (Fred Katz, Calo Scott, Abdul Wadud, Diedre Murray, Peggy Lee) and in Europe (Tristan Honsinger, Maarten Altena, Denis Van Hecke, Ernst Reijseger). Alongside Didier Petit, Jean-Charles Capon is one of the French virtuosi on the instrument, and he began playing professionally at the beginning of the '60s before creating the Baroque Jazz Trio. His name was rapidly linked to different cult groups for who he became the guest star (Confluence, Perception, Speed Limit), but also with many more or less well-known (free) jazz musicians including David S. Ware with whom he recorded the impeccable duo From Silence To Music (1978), Philippe Maté, Michel Roques, André Jaume, or Joe McPhee (as part of Po Music). Jef Gilson helped get his career under way (they recorded together as far back as 1968) before Pierre Barouh, boss of Saravah records with who Jean-Charles Capon played alongside Brigitte Fontaine and Areski, offered him the opportunity to record his first album: L'Univers-Solitude. In the company of Swiss percussionist Pierre Favre, Jean-Charles Capon demonstrated, in all registers, a level of invention way beyond a traditional rhythmic and melodic background, with the fluid phrasing a perfect complement to his extended range. It is not for nothing that Jean-Charles Capon admires Duke Ellington, John Lewis, and Gabriel Fauré, as can be heard on his later highly personal versions of "Mood Indigo", "Django", and "Après Un Rêve". As for Pierre Favre, he is not there just to make up the numbers: his timbral research and combinations of complex rhythms offer the French cellist wonderful interaction throughout this remarkable album which had finally been given a dignified rerelease. The fluidity of the phrasing, timbral research, complex rhythmic combinations and rare sense of improvisation make this one of the best modern jazz recordings on the Saravah label in the 1970s. Licensed from Saravah. Gatefold sleeve; Obi strip; Edition of 500.

ROQUES, MICHEL Chorus LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first every vinyl reissue of Michel Roques's Chorus, originally released in 1972. Although his albums are full of the same qualities as those of many other star saxophonists/flutists playing spiritual jazz, Frenchman Michel Roques is often classed as a "supporting artist" or a "musicians' musician", forever in the background, and often left out of the reference books. Adding to this lack of recognition is the fact that Michel Roques was seriously under-recorded: five albums as leader in a career of almost twenty years does not amount to much! Thankfully, in 1972, Pierre Barouh, boss of Saravah, records made up for the injustice by offering him the opportunity to record Chorus in studio, providing a continuity with the equally brilliant Safari made four years earlier (1969). An ambitious work, Chorus owes much to the unusual "augmented" rhythm section, the inner structure of which is none other than that used in the Parisian trio of pianist Mal Waldron at the end of the 1960s: namely Patrice Caratini on bass (completed by the cello of the amazing Jean-Charles Capon) and Franco Manzecchi on drums (seconded by the percussion of Humberto Canto). Another notable singularity is that Michel Roques had the excellent idea of excluding the piano, traditionally employed in this kind of context. This didn't prevent Chorus from being played on French TV in 1973 with a piano replacing the cello, and a different voice reciting the beat-style poems of Nicole Roques, that of actor Jacques Degor, occasional collaborator with Jef Gilson, but far less convincing than Bachir Touré, wisely chosen for this recording for his style inherited from Afro-American preachers and capable of holding his own with the wild improvisations. In its own way, Chorus is one of the key albums mixing free jazz and spoken word "à la française". It is also a militant concept album which has lost nothing of its political force. Licensed from Saravah. Gatefold sleeve; obi strip; Edition of 500.

GRUP SES AND ETHNIQUE PUNCH Deli Divan LP
In 2018, Sucata Tapes welcomed Grup Ses with Program 01 (SUC 012CS, 2018), a mystically-mixed soundtrack of far-out new age and film soundtracks from Turkey circa 1986. A new set of Turkish delights were prepared for this year's release. Deli Divan is a two-part record with incredibly crafted beats that tell a different story depending on which version one choses. The A side captivates with its voracity; hi-tech and fierce beats drop with the sharp voice and flow of Ethnique Punch, delivering 14 (yes, f-o-u-r-t-e-e-n) short and punchy tracks. The diggin' liveliness of Grup Ses is well present in the samples used, manufacturing beats that serve well the fast paced and nocturnal voice of Ethnique Punch. The first part of Deli Divan is pretty much a straight story, but a good one. But then comes the surprise, the other side. The same fourteen tracks without voice, just the beats. And here, Deli Divan tells a completely different story. It loses the urgency, darkness and robustness of the A side, especially because the beats float in limbo without a voice. But that limbo reveals the straightforwardness of the beats created by Grup Ses for this record. There's a hidden narrative here; without the voice the short tracks connect like an outer world radio broadcast. But there's no narrator, just time-traveling beats that interlink past, present and future, synthesizing complex ideas in short bursts of one or two minutes.

MAGAZZINI CRIMINALI Crollo Nervoso LP+CD
Spittle Records present a reissue of Magazzini Criminali's Crollo Nervoso, originally released in 1980 on black or white vinyl by Italian Records. Magazzini Criminali can be considered one of the most important experiences in Italian post-avant-garde theatre of the '70s and the '80s. Back in 1980 the group gave birth to one their widely acclaimed and most representative works. Crollo Nervoso was a real post-modern opera, a complex and multi-layered work based on the transfer between different art languages and aesthetics. A deep mixture of avant rock, Burroughs's cut up, science fiction, body art, glamor, and a hint of porno. On stage actors move obsessively and creating some highly repetitive sequences that show a clear "rock" approach. Musically, you are in front of a great hybrid where electronics, tribal funk, ambient, and blues interact with actors excited voices and "stolen" fragments from the musical works of Eno, Fripp, Jon Hassell, Miles Davis, and others. More than a pre-plunderphonics kind of work, Crollo Nervoso is a definitive re-invention of the soundtrack concept in relation with text and drama. Crollo Nervoso stands as a unique sound-art object that finally sees the light again in all its multi-sensory eclecticism.

LA 1919 Ars srA LP+CD
Spittle Records present a definitive reissue of the long out-of-print first album from Italian experimental-rock band LA 1919, Ars srA, originally released in 1987 by ADN, the Italian Recommended Records branch. Ars srA was an early example of a long-distance collaboration album as result of a virtuosic exchange of tapes between the Milan-based duo and the legendary American guitarist Henry Kaiser and Canadian maverick sound artist John Oswald. The resulting music sounds like a perfect blend of '70s art-rock elements and '80s electronics. An eclectic mix of "Frith"-oriented guitars, cold synthetic sounds, and programmed drum machine beats. Some sort of sonic no-man's land where elements from the post-rock in opposition aesthetic meet the experimental side of new wave. The album includes a declared tribute to the Frith-Laswell-Maher seminal coalition, via a metronomic version of "Killing Time", the title track from Massacre's first album from 1981 (SPITTLE 067LP). The LP comes with updated graphics and contents including unpublished pictures and various memorabilia; Includes CD with extra tracks.

Munich quintet Fazer release their second album, Nadi. Moving freely between composition and improvisation, the band's spacious, organic sound pitches lyrical melodies from guitar and trumpet over double-drummer polyrhythmic grooves and dub-like basslines. The album title Nadi references a term rooted in traditional Indian medicine. Nadis are channels that connect points of intensity within the body. This reflects the band's feeling while playing of moving as one body. Contrary to the creation of Mara, both the writing and recording sessions for Nadi were completed in relatively short periods of time.

While working on his next full-length album, Remix Tales sees the Berlin-based artist, DJ and label owner Oliver Koletzki look back onto an impressive career and a plethora of styles and moods, best exemplified by this diverse set he's been crafting for prolific friends and outstanding musicians for close to a decade. For Remix Tales, Oliver has now complied his personal favorites, with some previously unreleased, high-impact material forming the icing on the cake. Stylistically, Remix Tales exemplifies Oliver's chameleon-like approach in the studio, as dynamics shift from organic dreaminess to high-octane club-fare, all held together by the trademark musicality that shines through every single Koletzki production. While recent remix highlights such as Monolink's "Swallow" or Giorgia Angiuli's "Nothing to Lose" rub shoulders with classics like HVOB's "Dogs" and Cassius' "Toop Toop", it's the inclusion of Oliver's previously unreleased 2017 rework of Howling's "We Stole The Night", as well as the freshly remixed Koletzki & Schwind track "Camps Bay", that add unexpected and particularly precious twists and turns to this rollercoaster of an anthology. PROPER ORNAMENTS, THE 6 Lenins CD
6 Lenins, the third album release from The Proper Ornaments, sees the band master their seemingly effortless but finely-wrought sound as their songwriting prowess refuses to plateau. Fresh from an US tour in autumn 2018, the London jangle pop group led by James Hoare (also of Ultimate Painting/Veronica Falls) and Max Claps (Toy) went into James' home studio in Finsbury Park, London and made their finest recordings to date on a newly-installed 16 track Studer machine -- joined by Danny Nellis (Charles Howl) on bass and Bobby Syme (Wesley Gonzalez) on drums. Having escaped deep, twisting tunnels of illness, divorce and drug abuse to release their second record in January 2017, it's unsurprising they sound sunnier this time around. What their supremely melodic work suggests is a nonchalance or naivety but is in fact an expensively-bought slice of coherence and clarity within a constantly shifting backdrop to their lives and landscapes. The band exists as an unassuming and resilient organism in a fiercely competitive, trashed environmental niche. Throughout their years of hard-edged music industry Darwinism, they've shown longevity and growth scuttling from the wreckage of their previous guitar bands to become one united organism. "We started writing new songs in the summer. I was in bed recovering from hepatitis and very broken and tired so couldn't do anything else apart from playing guitar," says Max, "and the songs slowly started to appear. In August we realized we had five new songs each and free time, so we decided to record them. The actual recording only took two weeks and it was considerably easier than our previous recordings." The speed with which 6 Lenins was made suggests the two songwriters managed to keep a keen focus on what they wanted to achieve, further finessing the balance of conflict and collaboration that lends their sweet, succinct tunes their nervous energy; this is well-crafted songwriting and controlled sonics despite a zealous analog sensibility. The opener "Apologies", sets out stridently and the mood and momentum, even as one weaves through some more somber moments, never dips before soaring with the Velvets-y propeller riff of live favorite "In the Garden" to end the record.

Zachary Paul's debut album for Touch, A Meditation On Discord, compiles two live recordings from 2018 and a short film score, showcasing his expressive range and unique playing style. Both live recordings -- "Premonition" and "Slow Ascent" -- were fully improvised on his violin ("The Duke," 1878), with a minimal assortment of pedals (Earthquaker Afterneath, Diamond Memory Lane Jr, and Boss RC-30) and looped vocals. Mastered by Simon Scott at SPS Mastering; artwork and photography by Jon Wozencroft. Edition of 500."'Premonition' (October 12, 2018) was recorded on the first day of Desert Daze music festival. For this performance I tuned my violin in open G (G-D-G-D) for the very first time. The afternoon was warm and bright, but storm clouds, yet to be seen at the time of this recording, loomed on the horizon.* My improvisation began in the present moment, reflecting the vibrations of the sun. Once locked in with these higher frequencies, the instrument took control and painted the evening. This performance was both a premonition of night and an astral projection towards the clouds crawling towards the festival grounds, catalyzed by an instrument resonating with the frequencies of the earth. 'Slow Ascent' (February 23, 2018) was recorded at Human Resources, Los Angeles, for an event celebrating the release of Yann Novak's second album. This performance was an inverted guided group meditation. In front of my biggest audience to date, I was extremely anxious. Rather than letting my nerves lead the way**, I fed off of the energies of the audience, letting their patience, calm and warmth guide the instrument. 'A Person With Feelings' is a score for a short abstract film to be released in 2019. A modern trance film, the piece follows a young actor's internal journey. The soundscape reflects the arc of the film and showcases the textural range of my instrument." --Zachary Paul*Later that night, the headline act was forced to leave the stage and the festival was shut down after intense lightning and rain storms.**My anxiety, manifesting as physical tremors in my arm, can be heard in the jagged bow stroke that opens the piece.

ZIOR Zior LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Zior's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. British blues-rock quartet Zior had their roots in the bourgeoning R&B scene that arose during the late 1960s in the southeast coastal city of Southend; they built a strong reputation in live performance, opting for "happenings" in the style of Hawkwind and Pink Floyd that went beyond mere musical events. By the time they recorded their self-titled debut album, issued on Larry Page's short-lived Nepentha label in 1971, they were clearly influenced by the emergent hard rock/heavy metal scene of the West Midlands, drawing from Black Sabbath's discordant riffs and occult influences, along with shrill vocal attacks in Led Zeppelin mode; there were shades of Steppenwolf and the odd Doors-sounding keyboard riff as well -- and the Black Sabbath link was heightened by an album design from Keith McMillan, who was responsible for Black Sabbath's debut cover too (1970). The resultant Zior is a varied ride through different kinds of rock terrain, from blues rock to hard rock and on to whimsical psychedelia and prog-rock, making it hard to classify. Though this debut LP should have heralded a bright beginning, misfortune seemed to dog the band from the start; other recordings were released under the name Monument, the band members listed under aliases, and a second album, Every Inch A Man, was issued in Germany after Zior's breakup in 1973 without the band's knowledge or permission. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

APPLE An Apple A Day... PIC. DISC
Trading Places present a reissue of Apple's An Apple A Day..., originally released in 1969. British psychedelic band Apple was formed in the industrial powerhouse of Cardiff, north Wales, in 1968 by guitarist Robbo Ingram and bassist Jeff Harrad. Joined by drummer Dave Brassington, keyboardist Charlie Barber, and singer Dennis Regan, their debut single "Thank U Very Much" (1968), arranged by session guitarist Big Jim Sullivan, sparked the interest of Larry Page, who signed them to his Page One label to cut the debut album An Apple A Day... with producer Caleb Quaye (the son of the multi-instrumentalist Cab Quaye and older brother of future singer Finley Quaye). Unfortunately, Apple's mixture of pop, psychedelia and heavy blues was probably a bit too ahead of its time; the album sold poorly on release and the group probably would have been totally forgotten, if not for belated critical acclaim, especially for Harrad's haunting "The Otherside". With rare originals incredibly hard-to-find, regularly selling for thousands of pounds, this reissue is long overdue. 180 gram, picture vinyl.

SANDY COAST Shipwreck LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Sandy Coast's Shipwreck, originally released in 1969. Pioneering Dutch quartet Sandy Coast formed in the town of Voorburg, near Den Haag, in 1961. Early work found release on a series of singles on the Delta label during the mid-1960s. referencing an American pop-rock sound, framed by choral harmonies; soon, the evolving close harmony of songs like "We'll Meet Again" saw them edging towards the realm of the Moody Blues, while "Milk And Tranquilers" was based more strongly on a rhythm-and-blues framework. Moving to the Relax label in 1967, they began issuing spacious psychedelic songs such as "Capital Punishment", and their debut album From The Workshop (1968) was thoroughly in psychedelia mode. Larry Page issued sophomore album Shipwreck in 1969, the disc is an early concept album focusing on a lengthy suite that recounted a doomed voyage, captained by one Derrick Holmes in 1779. Much of the rest of the album recalls the spacey sounds of King Crimson, but there is also raw blues, psychedelic pop-rock, and an individual reading of Paul McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby". 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

THOMAS, IRMA In Between Tears LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Irma Thomas's In Between Tears, originally released in 1973. Known as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans", Irma Thomas was born Irma Lee in the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, in 1941. After singing in the local Baptist church, she auditioned for Specialty Records on the cusp of her teens; working as a waitress, she occasionally sang with blues veteran Tommy Ridgley, who helped broker a record deal with the short-lived independent, Ron Records, for her debut single, "Don't Mess With My Man" released when she was only 18 years old, which reached the number 22 position on the Billboard chars. The singer's tumultuous private life sometimes disrupted her career; by the age of 19 she had four children and had already been married twice, the last name of her second ex-husband becoming her permanent stage name. In 1961 she signed with the Minit label, where she worked closely with gifted arranger Allen Toussaint, and when the Hollywood-based Imperial took over Minit and then became part of Liberty Records, her profile increased dramatically; "Wish Somebody Would Care" was an outstanding chart-topper that led to her debut album and her scorned original, "Time Is On My Side", inspired an enduring hit interpretation by the Rolling Stones. Sophomore album Take A Look surfaced on Imperial in 1966, but unfortunately, subsequent work for Chess was far less successful. After signing to the Canyon label in 1970, Thomas cut a couple of singles in Macon, Georgia, with Jerry Williams Junior, a singer and producer from Portsmouth, Virginia that issued gritty, lewd funk under the alias Swamp Dogg; though the singles sold well in the south, they were largely overlooked elsewhere. Nevertheless, Williams brought Thomas to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to record the album that would eventually surface as In Between Tears, but the collapse of Canyon delayed its release until 1973, when Williams issued it on his Fungus label. This long-awaited vinyl reissue comes complete with four bonus tracks. 180 gram vinyl.

PAGE ORCHESTRA, THE LARRY Kinky Music LP
Trading Places present a reissue of The Larry Page Orchestra's Kinky Music, originally released in 1965. Aspiring Welsh pop singer Leonard Davies became Larry Page in the mid-1950s, when Columbia Records issued his material on 78s and 45s, including a cover of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day"; he also played banjo in the Crane River Jazz Band. Known as "Larry Page the Teenage Rage", he toured Britain with Cliff Richards and regularly appeared on national television. Shifting to a management and record production role in the early 1960s, he struck gold in 1964 upon signing a management contract with a band called The Ravens, who he re-named The Kinks, which swiftly became one of the most popular acts of the day. Noting that Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham had formed his own orchestra to cut orchestrated versions of Stones hits, Page put together the Larry Page Orchestra for debut disc, Kinky Music, which similarly reconfigured the Kinks' work. A pleasant romp through first-phase Kinks classics, it is also noteworthy as an early showcase for future Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page. 180 gram vinyl.

BATAAN, JOE Call My Name LP
2019 repress. "This whole project grew out of a song called 'Cycles Of You', which I had written around 2000-2001 with the guitarist and bassist of my band at the time, Easy. The chord progression and vocal melody really reminded me of Joe Bataan, and it occurred to me that it wouldn't be impossible to get him into the studio to do a guest vocal if we ever recorded it. I had met Bataan a few years before at Nuyorican Poets Cafe in my neighborhood. Around this time Bataan was playing out again, so I went to the show to see him and find out if he'd be interested in doing some vocals with us. He was agreeable, so we decided to turn it into a Joe Bataan session and do 'Cycles Of You'. When I got the opportunity from Vampisoul to do a full album, I was hoping Bataan and I could write some songs together, but our schedules proved tough to coordinate. I figured the best way to go about it was to do most of the work and just have him come sing on it. The rhythm section was a band called TransLove Airways that I formed in 2002. To this core group I added pieces from a few other local bands: The Middle Initials, who are a great Temptations/Main Ingredient-style vocal group, and members of an incredible Latin band called Grupo Latin Vibe, who were responsible for almost all the percussion and the vibraphone solo on 'I'm The Fool Pt. 2'. There was also some fine trombone playing by Aaron Johnson of Antibalas and great flute work by Neal Sugarman and my cousin Sonny. Preparing for Call My Name, I listened to a lot of different records from the mid to late '70s. It has now been over ten years since the completion of this record, and so much has changed. The Call My Name sessions took place when Daptone had just moved to Bushwick, its now-famous current location. Gabe Roth was my first call whenever I had any recording to do. He was yet to become the legendary figure at the center of the Daptone/Truth & Soul universe. He was just a humble guy with an incredible talent and an impeccable ear who made authentic sounding records with inexpensive analog gear." -- Daniel Collás, producer of Call My Name

WHOMADEWHO Watergate 26 CD
The dynamic trio from Copenhagen, whose music blurs the lines between countless genres, steps up to deliver the next installment in Watergate's mix series. Jeep Kjellberg, Tomas Barford, and Tomas Høffding, better known as WhoMadeWho, have spent the last decade cleverly and expertly traversing an array of genres blending facets spanning from club to rock music. Applying elements of pop, indie, techno, disco, punk, and funk and anything they can imagine, the outfit sets themselves apart from other club music yet, all the while they maintain an underground sensibility making WhoMadeWho the perfect candidate to take the driver seat for Watergate 26. The mix is quintessential WhoMadeWho as they slickly weave their way through a plethora of sounds without missing a beat. From the onset, deep and lush grooves coalesce with moody atmospherics on tracks like Öona Dahl & Dance Spirit's "Break The Stillness" and WhoMadeWho's rework of Magit Cacoon & Lonya's "Shma IL" before slowly edging the intensity up into Artbat's standout edit of WhoMadeWho's "Montserrat" and WhoMadeWho's remix of Concret & Tyu's "BlueBlackYellowGreen" where genres lines begin to blur. As the mix progresses the drama unfolds. Tim Engelhardt's "Under Armour" and Ruede Hagelstein & Justin Evans's "Love Over Pyramids" provide the ideal measure of psychedelia preluding an insanely slick transition into cinematic breakbeats on fellow Copenhagen cohort Kenton Slash Demon's "Arp 8" setting the stage for one of many highlights of the mix; Artbat's "Closer" featuring WhoMadeWho. Moving into the latter half of the 87 minutes the trio dive into headier territories showing their affinity emotive moments with Otto B's "Willy" and their own remix of Alex Schaufel's "The Day Of Rebirth" which cleverly melts into sultry smooth, mesmerizing cuts like dOP's "Radiowaves" and WhoMadeWho & Ruede Hagelstein's exquisite cover of Björk's "Violently Happy" creating a gorgeous entrance for the finale. With a stunning crescendo Speaking Minds & Amarcord's "Blue Days" is a valiantly emotional and epic moment that is only surpassed by the stunning and timeless WhoMadeWho's absolute future classic "Smile" bookending a grand closure to a truly sincere and masterful musical journey. Also features Chaim & Jenia Tarsol, Mathias Schober, Concret & Tyu, Stereocalypse, Clarian, Echonomist, and Otto B.

LA YEGROS Suelta CD
La Yegros is a native of Buenos Aires, and her parents are from Misiones, a province in the North East that draws its language from between Brazil and Paraguay. In this enclave, the porous borders of which lets foreign rhythms seep in, people play and dance to chamamé (a mixture of polka and Guarani music), carnavalito, and sways their hips to Columbian cumbia. These genres, bearing the hues of the Andean folklores, have then been put through the mill of Jamaican dancehall and electronic productions, thus composing a cocktail which recipe only La Yegros holds the rights. Thus, having grown up in the suburbs of a cosmopolitan city, imbued with the rural traditions of the country, and based today between France and Argentina, La Yegros does not cheat with her identity, which is as composite as her music is. This sincerity can be found in the songs in Suelta, most of which she has written both the lyrics and the music to, drawing her inspiration from considerations that are in turn intimate and social, exalting the role of women: "Tenemos Voz" ("We Have A Voice"), she sings with the British MC Soom T. La Yegros frees her high-tension temperament throughout the whole of Suelta, all the more so since the album presents original colors, while continuing its exploration of Northern folklores.
